Nominations voting is from January 11-16, 2024, with official Oscar nominations announced January 23, 2024. Final voting is February 22-27, 2024. And finally, the 96th Oscars telecast will be broadcast on Sunday, March 10 and air live on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT. We update predictions through awards season, so keep checking IndieWire for all our 2024 Oscar picks.

The State of the Race

The major fall festivals have flooded us with new Best Actor contenders in particular, and have even served as a second wind for certain stars’ ongoing campaigns. Still, the candidates that seem to remain locks are holdovers, including “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Leonardo DiCaprio and “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy, both of whom did not participate in Telluride, Venice, Toronto, etc.

As one of the last actual movie stars we have, DiCaprio’s chances of an Oscar nomination seem the most strike-proof. Though the Martin Scorsese film has not premiered to a wider audience yet, choosing to use this year’s Cannes Film Festival as its only launchpad, buzz for it has still carried. Yet with “Oppenheimer,” now the most successful biopic of all time (unadjusted), surpassing “Bohemian Rhapsody,” there is still a question of if Murphy can keep the momentum going for himself while not actually being able to campaign during the ongoing SAG strike.

Despite all his success both critically and commercially, director Christopher Nolan has never had one of his leads be nominated for Best Actor. This being Murphy’s breakout lead role, and the character J. Robert Oppenheimer himself being colder and less showy than some of the other lauded lead actor performances, there will still be a lot of effort needed to push the Irish thespian into frontrunner status.

Coming out of TIFF, Jeffrey Wright-starrer “American Fiction” and Paul Giamatti-starrer “The Holdovers” going No. 1 and 2 for the prestigious People’s Choice Award confirm both actors as viable Oscar contenders. The stage and screen veterans enter awards season with similar narratives, both finding a meaty, crowd-pleasing lead actor role right as their premium cable shows have come to an end.

Though he has been unable to promote his work in Netflix’s “Rustin,” star Colman Domingo was still able to hold court at TIFF with another project “Sing Sing,” which had a SAG waiver and was just acquired by A24. Even more than Murphy, his portrayal of Civil Rights leader Bayard Rustin scratches the tour de force biopic performance itch Oscar voters usually have when considering Best Actor candidates. Gael García Bernal’s performance in “Cassandro” similarly is building that kind of profile.

Lastly, while Academy members wait for Venice premieres like “Maestro,” “The Killer,” and “Ferrari” to play stateside, giving their stars a bit of a second wind on the Best Actor campaign front, there are people like “Perfect Days” star Kôji Yakusho and “The Taste of Things” star Benoît Magime that are starting to benefit from their films being in the Best International Feature conversation.

Contenders are listed in alphabetical order, below. No actor will be deemed a frontrunner until we have seen the film.

Frontrunners:
Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”)
Colman Domingo (“Rustin”)
Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”)

“John Wick” producer Basil Iwanyk told Collider that Keanu Reeves begged the team behind the long-running action franchise to kill him off at the end of “John Wick: Chapter 4.” It was par for the course for Reeves, who is so physically drained after filming each “John Wick” installment that he rarely is motivated to return for more. In this case, the producers once again did not entirely listen to their star.

“After the second, third, and fourth movie, making these films is so exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally,” Iwanyk said. “By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him. The guy is just a shell of himself because he just goes off and goes for it. He was like, ‘I wanna be definitively killed at the end of this movie.’”

“We were like, ‘You know, we’ll leave a 10% little opening,” Iwanyk teased.

“John Wick 4” ended with John’s presumable death after competing in a duel to free himself from the High Table. John gets shot in the third round of the duel and seemingly dies on the steps of the Basilica of Sacré Coeur while seeing a vision of his late wife, Helen. The film then cuts to a a final scene of Winston (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) visiting John’s gravestone.

In an interview with Empire magazine earlier this year, director Chad Stahelski revealed for the first time that a more concrete ending to the action tentpole was filmed and tested. In this version of the film, there was no question that John Wick survived the events of the duel.

“We had a different ending,” Stahelski said. “[The theatrical ending] was the ending Keanu and I wanted, but we shot a different ending. We shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So it was very clear that he was still alive. The audiences we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending.”

The ambiguous ending of “John Wick 4” has led many to wonder if Reeves will return for a fifth “John Wick” movie. A “John Wick 5” now seems like more of a possibility given that John’s survival at the end of “Chapter 4” appears to be a sure thing.

“I don’t know, I guess I’m going to have to lean on ‘never say never,’” Reeves told Entertainment Weekly after “Chapter 4” released about making another sequel. “I mean, I wouldn’t do a ‘John Wick’ film without [director] Chad Stahelski. We’d have to see what that looked like. For me, it feels really right that John Wick finds peace.”

“John Wick 4” is available to stream on Hulu with Starz add-on.

The Quantum Leap project has been kept well under wraps … until now.

NBC shared the official trailer for Quantum Leap Season 2 on Monday, and it teases Ben filling in someone about his time-traveling job.

In the new footage, Ben tells Hannah (played by The 100’s Eliza Taylor) all about it.

As previously reported, Taylor is one of two new series regulars this season, so we’re inclined to believe Ben and Hannah will be spending a lot of time together.

Peter Gadiot is the other new addition as US Army Officer Tom Westfall.

The exciting new footage teases leaps to Egypt in 1961, the Los Angeles Riots in 1992 Koreatown, a UFO investigation in 1949 New Mexico, witch trials in 1692 Massachusetts, and more.

If you watch Quantum Leap online, you know the leaps keep the show fresh because they offer new locations and time periods for the characters.

It’s always interesting when the characters get a new sandbox to play in, so we can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon for everyone.

The second season of the hit reboot is set to premiere Wednesday, October 4, at 8/7c, where it will lead into the final episodes of Magnum P.I.

Melissa Roxburgh (Manifest) has been tapped to appear alongside Francois Arnaud (Midnight Texas), Aaron Abrams (Hannibal, Blindspot), and P.J. Byrne (The Boys, Shazam! Fury of the Gods)/

“It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished,” the logline for the continuation teases.

“Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.”

Raymond Lee leads the cast, which also includes Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanrisa Lee.

Whoopi Goldberg is defending Hasan Minhaj, who has ignited a fierce debate after admitting to embellishing stories in his stand-up routines over the years.

“That’s what we do,” Goldberg said on “The View” about the role of the comedian (via Entertainment Weekly). “That’s what we do, we tell stories and we embellish them.”

“If you’re gonna hold a comic to the point where you’re gonna check up on stories, you have to understand, a lot of it is not the exact thing that happened because why would we tell exactly what happened? It ain’t that interesting,” she also said, adding later, “There’s information that we will give you as comics that will have grains of truth, but don’t take it to the bank. That’s our job, a seed of truth. Sometimes truth and sometimes total BS.”

In a story published by The New Yorker on Sept. 15, Minhaj admitted that several stories he has told in stand-up routines over the years were embellished. One such story involved an anthrax scare his family faced. In his 2022 Netflix comedy special “The King’s Jester,” Minhaj said his daughter came into direct contact with a white powder and had to go to the hospital to make sure it wasn’t anthrax. The comedian admitted that part of the story was not true, although he did have an anthrax scare that his daughter was present in the room for.

In a statement on the matter to Variety, Minhaj said, “All my standup stories are based on events that happened to me. Yes, I was rejected from going to prom because of my race. Yes, a letter with powder was sent to my apartment that almost harmed my daughter. Yes, I had an interaction with law enforcement during the war on terror. Yes, I had varicocele repair surgery so we could get pregnant. Yes, I roasted Jared Kushner to his face.”

“I use the tools of standup comedy—hyperbole, changing names and locations, and compressing timelines to tell entertaining stories. That’s inherent to the art form,” he added. “You wouldn’t go to a Haunted House and say ‘Why are these people lying to me?’—The point is the ride. Standup is the same.”

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! The original Danish title for Nikolaj Arcel’s The Promised Land is the Danish Bastarden or “The Bastard.” It’s a fitting title in that the director’s second feature with the renowned Mads Mikkelsen is quite a brutal experience. It is a film that stares headlong at heavy topics such as born rank and man’s contest with nature. However, none of this should suggest that the English title has lost something. On rather rare occasions, the Biblically allusive title reveals another side of the film—the bending of one’s will toward destiny. With this most primordial of themes, Arcel has constructed a piece of cinema that is not just arresting but wholly resplendent.

The Promised Land follows Ludvig von Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen), the bastard son of a maid and a nobleman who has overcome his low rank to become a successful army captain. Desiring to seize a noble title himself, the self-possessed Kahlen commits to establishing a settlement in the wild heath—an expanse of desolate wilderness. However, he soon runs afoul of Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), a wealthy landowner who refuses to share land or profit.

There is a noticeable vein of the mid-century adventure running throughout The Promised Land in both tone and aesthetics. The film is shaped in the visual mold of bygone epics, such as 1956’s The Searchers and 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia—the latter being a direct influence for Arcel. Wide lens cinematography is used in almost every scene, rendering Denmark’s rugged heath in cruel, captivating frames that bleed with foreboding. This makes the wilderness itself a type of omniscience, always present and always observing.

“Desiring to seize a noble title himself, the self-possessed Kahlen commits to establishing a settlement in the wild heath…”

As could be anticipated, Mikkelsen turns in a powerful performance as Ludvig von Kahlen, a man so stoically committed to his goal that his very presence on-screen seems to ignite the ire of the ever-present heath. However, the supporting character Ana Barbara (Amanda Collin) is of comparable force here, acting as a woman equally as unflinching but also palpably feminine in a time of tremendous hardship. The two are rounded out by the splendidly maniacal Frederik de Schinkel, played by an effervescent Bennebjerg, who teeters on the edge of cartoonish exaggeration but skillfully maintains believability throughout the film.

However, it is in the orchestration of these characters that Arcel finds his greatest success. Though seemingly straightforward, the plot continually offers organic story turns that allow the entire cast to play wonderfully off of the singular Mikkelsen. In these surprise moments, the film feels most like an adventure—generating moments of genuine depravity but also earnestness in its purest forms.

The only setback is a slightly off-kilter third act that too quickly and too tidily ties up loose ends. And yet, this misstep is buffered by a well-hewn narrative context that maintains the film’s emotional tone without ever veering into oversentimentality. Indeed, Arcel and Mikkelsen have struck a deeply human chord with The Promised Land. It is a tale of undoubted savagery but also one of hope in all its divine illumination.

The Promised Land screened at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! The

The ‘freshman flu’ is likely to hit students in the coming weeks as cold season approaches.

Thousands of students started congregating on the University of Saskatchewan campus just a few short weeks ago, meaning germs and sickness are bound to spread like wildfire.

Ishita Mann, president of the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union (USSU) said that students should stay home when they are sick and communicate their needs to their professors.

“Conversations with professors and department heads can solve a lot of confusion that students might have about their options,” Mann said.

Mann said that there is the possibility of having exams rescheduled or deferred and being offered extensions for assignments and quizzes.

The August CRISP report showed positive COVID-19 lab tests decreased, as well as influenza.

No cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) were reported.

“Prioritize your health and well-being and stay at home,” Mann said. “Chances are, your professor might be recording classes.”

She said if you must go to campus when you have a cold, wear a mask.

“If you miss a class or two, it is not the end of the world and you have solutions that are available.”

She said the campus is full of tutoring options and learning communities that can make it easy to catch up on missed assignments and lectures.

“Use your peers and make connections when you are coming to class. Rely on people you connect with on a daily basis.”

Mann said that students can always stop in at the USSU and access resources through the academic vice president.

“She can be a bridge between students and professors and others in leadership positions. I understand there is sometimes a hesitancy that young individuals have when it comes to approaching people in positions of power.”

The University of Saskatchewan’s sick policy said students should stay home if they feel ill.

“Anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, should consider taking a rapid antigen COVID-19 test,” read the university’s sick policy. “Rapid tests are available to USask students, staff and faculty at the USSU desk.

“If you are sick, stay home. You must be feeling better before returning to campus.”

Google’s Nest Hub Max will soon be terminating support for both Google Meet and Zoom as the company continues to axe features on the display.

This news comes from a user on the Google Home subreddit stating they have received messages informing them that they won’t be able to make calls via Google Meet “by the end of September.” More specifically, September 28, according to 9To5Google. Zoom, on the other hand, will live just a bit longer.

A Zoom support page explains it will go offline on the Nest Hub as of September 30. The post makes the point the app will ultimately stop working on the device and “no further updates will be made available.” You won’t even be able to install Zoom or sign-in on the Nest Hub Max after that date. It’s going dark for good.

When asked by 9To5Google why they’re doing this, a Google spokesperson claims the company wants to shift focus on making Google Assistant “more helpful” as it plans on implementing “generative AI capabilities”. Because of this shift, “some underutilized features” have to be cut in order to make room.

Totally cutoff

As you can imagine, people online are none too pleased with this decision. A user on the subreddit says this effectively turns the Nest Hub Max into a “giant paperweight”.

Zoom arrived on the Nest Hub Max during the COVID-19 pandemic as an easy way to initiate and join group video calls without another external device. Plus, it gave the smart home display an extra level of utility, allowing it to be integrated into a remote work setup. People flocked to the smart home display because of its usability, but now, one of its purposes for existing is leaving.

You could argue Zoom is being dropped because the company doesn’t want third-party competition on its hardware. Fair enough, but that doesn’t explain why first-party services like Google Meet are being dropped. Maybe it was ignored by the user base. Assuming this is the case, we can’t help but wonder what else will get the ax. This past June, on-device games were removed. At this rate, the Nest Hub Max may become an island, completely cut off from the rest of Google’s ecosystem.

Uncertain future

It’s unknown if the smart display is even capable of making video calls anymore. A set of instructions on how to use Google Duo on the Hub Max is still live on the Nest Help website. However, if you recall, Duo merged into Google Meet last year so it probably won’t work. We asked Google to clarify if the device can still make video calls, and, if so, how will that work? This story will be updated at a later time.

After seeing this change, you are probably thinking of getting a replacement for your Nest Hub Max. We recommend checking out TechRadar’s list of the best smart displays for 2023 if you want some suggestions.

Leslie Jones is the latest comedian to bring her life story to the page.

In “Leslie F*cking Jones,” out Sept. 19, the Emmy-nominated comedian and “Saturday Night Live” alum writes about her journey to Hollywood — from her childhood in the South and her early stand-up days to the craziest behind-the-scenes antics on “Ghostbusters,” “Supermaket Sweep” and “The Daily Show.” The cover of the book features a black-and-white childhood photo of Jones flashing a wide grin at the camera and holding a wired microphone, foreshadowing her future career.

“Now, I’m gonna be honest: Some of the details might be vague because a bitch is fifty-five and she’s smoked a ton of weed. But while bits might be a touch hazy, I can promise you the underlying truth is REAL,” Jones writes in the introduction.

Much of the early part of the book is centered around the abuse and trauma that Jones endured as a child. She recounts being assaulted at the age of two by one of her babysitters, an incident she’s unsure was ever made apparent to her parents.

“Man I wish I could go back and fight that guy — that little girl couldn’t protect herself,” Jones writes.

While she believes part of her “light was dimmed” after the assault, she’s also convinced that she only made it out okay because of the constant encouragement she received from her parents, both of whom died in the early 2000s from heart-related issues. As detailed in the book, Jones’ mom would sign her up for extracurricular activities to help boost her confidence, while her dad was her biggest cheerleader.

“That’s why I never quit,” Jones told People in an interview about her forthcoming memoir. “There were days where I was just crying and worrying, but the thought always came to my head, ‘Okay, what can I do.’ Dad said, ‘Become undeniable.’”

BTS star Suga will begin his mandatory military service in South Korea, and it seems the group’s dedicated ARMY fan base may need to give him some space.

Bighit Music, the group’s label, said announced in a news release Monday that Suga — the second eldest BTS member — will begin his “required service” on Friday. The label said “there will not be any official events” marking the start of his enlistment or his first day at training camp.

“We kindly ask fans to refrain from visiting SUGA at his workplace during the period of his service,” the statement continued. Fans have previously gathered at military bases to see off BTS members.

Bighit added: “Please convey your warm regards and encouragement in your hearts only.”

Last month, Bighit announced that Suga, 30, took steps to terminate his enlistment postponement.

South Korean law requires all able-bodied men to complete about 18 months of military service between the ages of 18 and 35. The seven BTS members range in age from 25 to 30. Bighit Music announced in October 2022 that BTS members would be joining the army.

“BIGHIT MUSIC has focused to the milestone moment when it would be possible to respect the needs of the country and for these healthy young men to serve with their countrymen, and that’s now,” the label said in an October statement.

To help the BTS stars carry out their mandatory service, Bighit also said that the musicians will take a break from group work and pursue solo endeavors. BTS will reunite in 2025, Bighit said in October.

Suga, born Min Yoon-gi, is the third BTS artist to fulfill his military commitment. In December 2022, the eldest BTS member, Jin, became the first to begin his enlistment.

According to the Associated Press, Jin and then-new conscripts took part in five weeks of basic military training at the base, including rifle shooting, grenade throwing and marching practices.

J-Hope, 29, began his service in April.

With multiple BTS members now in the South Korean military, Bighit urged devoted fans to keep an eye out for “unauthorized tours or package products that illegally use the artist’s intellectual property” and said it would take “appropriate measures” against such efforts.

“We ask for your continued love and support for SUGA until he completes his service and returns,” the statement concluded. “Our company will also strive to provide all the support he needs during this time.”

Times staff writer Jonah Valdez contributed to this report.

Summary

  • DC movies, both within and outside of the DCEU, have had numerous controversial moments that divided fans, reflecting the franchise’s history of making divisive choices.
  • From Batman killing the Joker in the 1989 film to Superman reversing time in the 1978 movie, these moments have sparked debates among fans about their alignment with comic book canon and character portrayals.
  • Even universally beloved films like Batman Returns have featured controversial scenes, such as Selina Kyle being revived by cats, that were deemed too campy and disconnected from DC Comics.

Across the DC Universe, many DC movies have featured controversial moments that divided fans, and some received particularly strong reactions. It is widely known that DC’s shared universe grew to be quite controversial over the years, which becomes clear especially when rewatching the DCEU movies. Director Zack Snyder’s distinct vision for some of DC’s most iconic characters ended up creating loyal supporters and ardent critics, with many other DCEU movies not directed by Snyder, such as Wonder Woman 1984 and Suicide Squad, also featuring moments that divided DC fans.

While the DCEU’s controversial status is fresh on fans’ minds, the shared DC movie universe is far from the first time DC movie moments have divided fans. Both on the live-action and animation sides, DC movies have managed to make some quite controversial choices over the years. While divisive moments are generally associated with movies that underperformed or received great criticism, even universally beloved DC movies have contributed to this negative trend. Here are 10 DC movie moments that divided fans the most, both in the DCEU or not.

10 Joker Scares Gary But Lets Him Go

2019’s Joker has some intense scenes, but one of them really divided fans. Despite Gary being his friend, having never made fun of Arthur, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker taunted the character before ultimately allowing him to leave his apartment after Arthur had killed their co-worker in front of Gary. Having witnessed Arthur brutally stabbing Randall to death, Gary slowly makes his way toward the door after the Joker says he won’t harm him, only for Arthur to scare Gary when he walks by him before opening the door for Gary. After such a brutal murder, the Joker scaring Gary for laughs is cruel and goes against Arthur’s “hero” view of himself.

9 Bat-Credit Card Reveal

batman forever credit card

1997’s Batman & Robin was so controversial that it ended up taking Batman away from the big screen until director Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale teamed up to bring the Dark Knight back in 2005’s Batman Begins. Among its several heavily debated scenes is the reveal of the infamous Bat-Credit Card that George Clooney’s Bruce Wayne uses when he needs access to funds while in action as Batman. The scene proved quite divisive, with some thinking it fits in with director Joel Schumacher’s brand of humor, while others think it makes Batman too much of a joke.

8 Selina Kyle Is Revived By Cats

Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman

While Batman Returns is highly regarded as one of the best live-action Batman movies, the film does possess a very controversial moment. Michelle Pfeiffer’s Selina Kyle falls to what appears to be certain death after being pushed by Max Shreck. However, Selina is weirdly brought back to life after several stray cats converge on her body, walking all over her, licking her, and gnawing at her fingers. Without explanation, Selina’s eyes roll back, and she wakes up to become Catwoman. The moment is very campy and has no source in DC Comics.

7 Batman Kills The Joker

Batman confronts the Joker in Batman 1989

Michael Keaton’s Batman ends up killing Jack Nicholson’s Joker in 1989’s Batman. As the Joker is escaping by holding onto a helicopter’s ladder, Batman fires his grappling hook to attach Joker’s leg to a nearby gargoyle, which eventually falls and sends the Joker toward his death. In the comics, Batman has a pretty defined no-kill rule, which live-action movies have had a hard time depicting. Keaton’s Batman not only breaks the Dark Knight’s cardinal rule but also does so by murdering the hero’s biggest foe, which doesn’t sit well with many fans, just like the movie’s reveal that the Joker killed Bruce’s parents.

6 Batman Killing & Branding

BvS Ben Affleck as Batman

Ben Affleck’s Batman was the latest movie version of the Dark Knight not to adhere to Batman’s no-kill rule from the comics. The DCEU’s Batman kills many people, with his debut movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, showing how brutal that version of the character is. Right at the start of the film, Batman is revealed to brand criminals, with the movie’s later warehouse scene and other moments showing that Affleck’s Bruce Wayne has a high kill count in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, making the movie quite controversial over its depiction of Batman.

5 Jonathan Kent Tells Clark Not To Save Him

Jonathan Kent in Man of Steel stopping Clark from saving lives

2013’s Man of Steel started the DCEU with a few controversial moments. Kevin Costner’s depiction of Jonathan Kent fell short of other versions of the character. Costner’s Pa Kent was far from the warm and caring versions of Jonathan Kent shown in Smallville and the comics, with the character seemingly hinting that a young Clark should have let a bus with his classmates drown in order to protect his secret. That builds up to Jonathan telling Clark not to save him from a hurricane so that his son’s secret isn’t revealed to the world, a choice that Superman would be unlikely to stand by in most other adaptations.

4 Batman & Batgirl Get Intimate

Batgirl and Batman sex scene in Killing Joke movie

The animated Batman: The Killing Joke is one of DC’s most controversial movies, as it didn’t simply adapt one of Batman’s most iconic stories ever but also added an unnecessary subplot that made no sense. In the animated film, Batman and Batgirl have sex, which never happened in the story the movie is based on and is weird to see given Barbara Gordon is often linked romantically to Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne’s first Robin, in most media. The moment was jarring and caused many fans to be disappointed, which is a shame, as the rest of the movie is a great adaptation of the iconic comic book story.

3 Superman Reverses Time By Flying Around The Earth

Superman reverses time by flying around the Earth

1978’s Superman is held to this day as the best Superman movie, with Christopher Reeve’s acting in the film still being recognized as the gold standard for the character. However, the film also presented one of the most divisive DC movie moments. Superman‘s controversial time travel scene, where the Man of Steel flies so fast that he makes Earth spin backward to reverse time, launched many debates among fans. While some think the scene is one of Superman’s biggest displays of power in live-action, others question how spinning the Earth backward could actually turn back time and if Superman should even be allowed to do that.

2 Superman Killing Zod

Superman killing Zod in Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill’s Superman killing Michael Shannon’s General Zod kicked off the DCEU with what would be one of the biggest controversies in DC history. Superman is known for being the best among the heroes, with his love for humanity and sense of justice making killing anyone a no-go for the hero. However, Man of Steel made Cavill’s Superman cross that line in his DCEU debut. The moment in incredibly divisive, as there are fans that believe Superman had no other way to defeat Zod and others who think Snyder should have had Superman banish Zod to the Phantom Zone instead of killing him.

1 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s “Martha” Scene

Batman v Superman Dawn Of Justice Martha Scene

Finally, the DCEU’s most controversial moment and the most divisive DC movie moment has to be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s “Martha” scene. Batman decides not to kill Superman after spending most of the movie trying to do that just because Superman reveals to Bruce that his mother’s name is also Martha, just like Batman, which is anticlimactic. The moment makes more sense in the movie’s Ultimate Edition, as Snyder gets to flesh out what leads to Superman saying that; however, the theatrical version of the moment stands out as one of the moments that led to that iteration of the live-action DC Universe never taking off with fans.

Starfield’s release has made a lot of waves across the gaming industry. Still, some Bethesda fans can’t help but wonder about the upcoming release of The Elder Scrolls VI, the game that was announced at the same time as Starfield. Unfortunately, some fans might have to wait a bit longer as it turns out that recent documentation related to the game has revealed that the game won’t be out for a few more years.

New documents regarding Microsoft’s approach following key acquisitions since 2018 (Discovered by The Sixth Axis) have revealed that The Elder Scrolls VI is expected to be released by 2026 or later. Another tidbit of information worth highlighting is that the game will not feature a multiplayer component or have any release on PlayStation consoles.

Another document from the FTC case with Microsoft has additional confirmation showing that the game has no plans to be released on PlayStation. This was highlighted by Stephen Totilo from Axios.

Unfortunately, updates regarding Elder Scrolls VI will remain sparse for the following year as Microsoft and Bethesda continue working on the project. Still, at least this documentation provides a somewhat accurate window about when the game is expected to be released and when it will once again return to the news cycle with more prominence.

Just a reminder that tomorrow, September 18, is the Regular Deadline to submit your 2023 features and episodic projects to the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The extended Member Deadline is Tuesday, October 3. See you in Santa Monica!

Well, look at you. The independent filmmaker, your project completed. Sitting there utterly dazed, short of breath, atop of a pile of warm DCPs—a ticker tape Elder’s scroll of SVOD rental receipts choking your ankles like a low coastal fog. You ask yourself: What the hell just happened? And: How did we pull that off? And possibly: What’s next? Well, just when you thought your obligations as a steward of cinema were nearing the finish line, there’s still a long and winding road to travel paved with awards season gold, glass and bronze.

Basically that’s our fancy way of saying SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 2024 FiLM iNDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS ARE STILL OPEN. And of course, the Spirit Awards Ceremony is our largest annual fundraising gala, which support our year-round efforts to champion and support diverse, inclusive and innovative voices in visual storytelling.

It bears repeating: you can submit your film or groundbreaking series, get nominated for a Spirit Award and win. So to encourage this line of virtuous thought, we thought it’d be fun to look back at five of our favorite Spirit Awards moments from the 2023 ceremony earlier this year—and hey, maybe next year your speech will be here instead…

REID DAVENPORT ON A ROLL

Why We Love It: Doc director Reid Davenport’s first-person chronicle of life as a wheelchair-bound artist is contextualized via a historical exploration of the seeming invisibility of the disabled class throughout modern society. His heartfelt and enthusiastic speech upon receiving 2023’s Truer Than Fiction Award brought the house down, after which rolled back down to the Spirit Award floor at took his rightful place at the winners’ table.

WOMAN TALKING

Why We Love It: Each year the Spirit Awards’ Robert Altman Award recognizes an exemplary ensemble cast. Who else would you give such an award to in Q1 of 2023 than writer/director Sarah Polley and the performers who brought her arresting, often dreamlike and proudly feminist drama Women Talking to intense, starkly rendered life. Co-awardees included Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Frances McDormand, Ben Wishaw and others.

IF THE HSU FITS

Why We Love It: When the Spirit Awards (always on the vanguard of such things) moved to genderless acting categories last year, an additional BEST BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE acting category was added—or possibly reintroduced, depending how bit of a deep-dive Indie Spirit Awards history buff you are. And no one “broke through” like Everything Everywhere All At Once‘s Jobu, who crashed through walls, tables and alternative dimensions as the Best Feature winner’s complex and ultimately redeemed antagonist.

MESS REHEARSAL

Why We Love It: The Rehearsal creator and overall comedy weirdo supergenius Nathan Fielder is not generally known for his effusive affect. So for him, the mildest bit of awkward gratitude expressed at the HBO show’s win for Best New Non-Scripted Docuseries practically counts as Roberto Benigni jumping over rows of Oscar seating. He noted that he met Fi President Josh Welsh backstage, and that the catering was pretty good, and then everyone laughed hysterically. That’s it!

JOSH LAUNCHES #AD30

Why We Love It: Speaking of Mr. Welsh, the Film Independent majordomo claimed some stage time on behalf of the Spirit Awards’ parent organization to thank its supporters, new and continuing, for helping sustain a nurturing and creative environment. The speech also launched the start of Fi’s year-long celebration of the 30-year anniversary of its Artist Development programs, whose alumni list boasts some of Hollywood’s best, brightest and most well-decorated.

The Spirit Awards will be held on March 25, 2024. Film Independent promotes unique independent voices by helping filmmakers create and advance new work. To become a Member of Film Independent, just click here.

PETA—the animal rights group known for it’s headline-grabbing stunts—has been crashing fashion shows to protest the use of animal fur since 1991 (enjoy their rather grainy timeline of interrupted shows here). But while earlier activists carried aggressive signs and looked like, well, normal not-model people, the group’s 2023 tactics are much better. This year, they’re sending sign-carrying women, who are built and styled like models, down the runways to display their message, not confront anyone…and the girls can walk.

At New York Fashion Week, a blonde infiltrated the Coach show to hold up a “Leather Kills” sign, but was dragged away by security. It’s unclear from the video if she or they initiated the struggle, but it did seem like a rather forceful move to stop someone who was, actually, not even interrupting the other models! (PS – What happened to the woman in the body paint?)

But in London, things went a lot smoother. Another PETA activist crashed another venue—this time Burberry for show—and an experienced security guy, perhaps chastened by the kerfuffle at Coach, expertly hooked his arm around her waist and steered her out of the area without causing a scene.

Back on 1997’s “Dammit,” Blink-182 postulated that growing up meant realizing all your closest friends were gone. Now, almost three decades and a new drummer later, the band really has grown up. But through all the genuinely devastating trials they’ve faced over the years, the trio seems to finally understand what growing up actually means: bringing your closest friends back together to do what you all do best.

This comes via an emotional, nearly 4-minute-long album announcement video posted by the band today. The record, titled One More Time…, is set for an October 20 release. It also marks the trio’s first album with the classic Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Travis Barker lineup in almost a decade.

blink-182 – ONE MORE TIME…

“What you need to understand about Blink-182 is that we didn’t come out of, like, joyous homes,” DeLonge explains in an intro to the video. “So Blink was always a way to force the happiness in the room.” As the rest of the video unfolds, all three members explain to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe just how much they’ve needed to regain that sense of joy in recent years. Travis Barker survived a near-fatal plane crash that killed four other passengers. Mark Hoppus survived stage 4 lymphoma. Tom DeLonge survived… quitting the band for a little while to become an alien researcher, but it sounds like that was pretty emotional for him too.

Gone are the innuendos and crass humor of Blink announcements of yore. “On the album, ‘One More Time’ is kind of written, like, why does it take these catastrophes… for our band to get back together?” asks Barker while a snippet of the leading single (out this Thursday) plays. “When it’s the three of us on stage, I feel unstoppable,” Hoppus adds, noting that the “healing” of “this band and this music and this record” causes him to cry on stage every night.

“Coming out with these words ‘One More Time,’ it’s like, this is the last time we’re gonna fuck this up,” DeLonge says in conclusion.

Here’s the full track list for One More Time…, which Lowe hails as “the best album [the band] has ever made”:

Yes, fine, the title of the movie should have been Theatre Camp, and not Theater Camp. But if you can overlook that transgression and watch this mockumentary about a performance arts summer camp—which is now streaming free on Hulu—you’ll be treated to the funniest comedy of the year. Written by Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman, Ben Platt, and Noah Galvin, and co-directed by Gordon and Lieberman, Theater Camp is Christopher Guest meets Wet Hot American Summer. Everyone in the cast—Gordon, Platt, Galvin, Jimmy Tatro, Patti Harrison, Ayo Edebiri, and more—brings their A-game. The script is full of razor-sharp one-liners, and clearly benefitted from having all four writers on set for improv and punch-ups. It’s a hysterical evisceration of former “theater kids” that will hit particularly hard for anyone who spent the majority of their high school experience in the drama room.

Whoopi Goldberg is standing by fellow comedian Hasan Minhaj after the former “Patriot Act” star admitted to embellishing elements of his autobiographical stand-up sets.

“That’s what we do,” the “View” cohost Goldberg said on the daytime talk show (via Entertainment Weekly). “That’s what we do, we tell stories, and we embellish them.”

She continued, “If you’re going to hold a comic to the point where you’re going to check up on stories, you have to understand, a lot of it is not the exact thing that happened because why would we tell exactly what happened? It’s not that interesting. There’s information that we will give you as comics that will have grains of truth, but don’t take it to the bank. That’s our job, a seed of truth: sometimes truth and sometimes total B.S.”

Minhaj recently told The New Yorker that his onstage storytelling is “grounded in truth” but is not factually correct. Minhaj confirmed that his comments over being allegedly assaulted by a police officer and revealing his young daughter was hospitalized after an anthrax terrorism scare did not occur.

“No, I don’t think I’m manipulating [the audience],” Minhaj said. “I think they are coming for the emotional rollercoaster ride…To the people that are, like, ‘Yo, that is way too crazy to happen,’ I don’t care because yes, fuck yes — that’s the point.”

After the article was released and subsequently went viral, Minhaj representatives issued a statement to IndieWire: “All my standup stories are based on events that happened to me. Yes, I was rejected from going to prom because of my race. Yes, a letter with powder was sent to my apartment that almost harmed my daughter. Yes, I had an interaction with law enforcement during the war on terror. Yes, I had varicocele repair surgery so we could get pregnant. Yes, I roasted Jared Kushner to his face. I use the tools of standup comedy — hyperbole, changing names and locations, and compressing timelines to tell entertaining stories. That’s inherent to the art form. You wouldn’t go to a Haunted House and say ‘Why are these people lying to me?’ — The point is the ride. Standup is the same.”

In November 1974, a young Jerry Brown stepped onto a stage in a three-piece pinstriped suit to deliver the most important speech of his career.

He had just won California’s gubernatorial election, a pivotal moment in the state’s political history. Ronald Reagan had been the state’s governor for eight years, but when he declined to run for a third term, Democrats had an opportunity to wrest control from Republicans. The Democratic candidate was Jerry Brown, while the Republican candidate was Houston I. Flournoy (whose name, chiseled jaw and neatly parted hair almost made him the picture-perfect conservative). Throughout the campaign, Brown repeatedly warned voters that if Flournoy won, it would mean “four more years of Reaganism.” Flournoy retorted that Brown was inexperienced and that his political success rested on the famous name of his father, Pat Brown, a twice-elected California governor. But, when the votes were counted that November night, Brown was crowned the victor. “I’ve been looking at the returns. I’ve been watching television, watching the wire services, and it’s pretty obvious to me that you’ve got a Democratic governor in 1975,” he told the applauding gathering. “Now, you see, some people think I got here because of my father. It’s actually because of my mother.” His mother, standing beside him that night, beamed with pride.

Brown was an unusual figure in American politics. Although he grew up in one of California’s most powerful political families, he only ever observed power from the corridors and had no early ambitions to work in politics. Instead, Brown spent four years studying damnation and salvation at a Jesuit seminary, intending to become a Catholic priest. When he realized that priesthood wasn’t for him, he enrolled at UC Berkeley, where he studied Classics and frequented the cafes where Allen Ginsberg penned “Howl.” It was only after graduating from Yale Law School and, once again, realizing that this career was not for him that he sought something else. After overhearing his father and politician Jesse Unruh discussing who should run for governor in 1963, he felt invigorated. “I found that very exciting,” he explained. “There was a vitality, an intensity.”

This was the beginning of Brown’s political life.

Portrait of Jerry Brown, by Richard Avedon, March 20, 1976, National Portrait Gallery

Brown was elected California Secretary of State in 1971 and governor four years later (in a poetic move, succeeding Reagan, who had defeated his father eight years earlier). He ran on the promise of bringing a “new spirit” to government, and he delivered. His Cabinet was largely made up of younger people in their 30s and 40s who gave fresh perspectives on how to handle California’s challenges. He also eschewed many of the benefits that came with his position. Instead of residing in the freshly built 20,000-square-foot governor’s mansion in Carmichael, he chose a modest $275-per-month apartment in downtown Sacramento, closer to his office. Rather than being chauffeured in a limo, like his predecessors, he drove a powder blue Plymouth Satellite. Following a morning meeting, his Chief of Staff, Gray Davis, suggested that the 10-inch hole in the rug beside the governor’s desk be repaired since it was “unseemly.” Brown replied: “That hole will save the state at least $500 million because legislators cannot come down and pound on my desk demanding lots of money for their pet programs while looking at a hole in my rug!”

Despite his frugality and progressive ideals, Brown dressed in clothes that today would mark him as a corporate lobbyist. He frequently wore 6×2 double-breasted suits with jetted pockets, spearpoint collars, and conservatively patterned neckties. He wore his ties with a four-in-hand knot—rather than the more common half-Windsor—which historically signaled a more privileged upbringing. When Richard Avedon shot his portrait in 1976, Brown donned a double-breasted blazer with pagoda shoulders, patched pockets, and peak lapels so wide they almost grazed his shoulder joints. His necktie that day was adorned with an equestrian motif—buckled belts and bridle reins were strewn across the silk, like the diagonal rep stripes on private club neckwear. The ensemble screamed, “MONEY!”

Brown’s clothes were unusual for another reason. Since the end of the Second World War, the coat-and-tie has been dying a slow, anguished death. In his book “Rebel Style,” Bruce Boyer framed the era’s culture wars in clothing terms. Establishment types wore the suit; anti-establishment types took to white T-shirts, blue jeans and black motorcycle jackets (a look that Marlon Brando turned into a rebel pose after his appearance in the 1953 film “The Wild One”). By the early 1970s, when Brown was elected, the suit had never been viewed with more suspicion. Civil unrest, the Watergate scandal, and frustrations over the Vietnam War contributed to a great distrust in traditional institutions. Yet, here was this young, 36-year-old Democrat from California championing progressive ideals—labor and environmental protections, diversity and inclusion, and warning people about the limits of economic growth—while dressed in three-piece pinstriped suits and double-breasted blazers. Boyer said that even the most dandyish politicians at the time, such as Texas’s senator John Tower, “wouldn’t have ventured that far.”

His off-duty outfits were just as considered. Brown wore white flare-leg jeans with dress shirts and Adidas sneakers, or casual button-up shirts with preppy brushed Shetland knits slung across his shoulders. He avoided the dreaded term “clotheshorse” but certainly knew how to dress himself.

Brown’s dashing style and progressive principles elevated him to rockstar status. He dated Linda Ronstadt and socialized with Jackson Browne and The Eagles. His meteoric climb to stardom and a string of political triumphs fueled his ambitions. He ran to be the Democratic nominee for President in 1976 but lost to Jimmy Carter. After his loss, Brown returned to California to serve another term as governor, and then briefly retired in 1982, only to return as Oakland mayor in 1999.

Even during those transitional years, he maintained his sense of style, wearing white turtlenecks under his black-and-white checkered flannel shirts, which he teamed with black jeans. In 2011, he was elected again as California’s Governor, serving a third and fourth term before fully retiring in 2019.

Brown was one of the state’s three best-dressed governors, along with Ronald Reagan and Gavin Newsom. Stylistically, he was unique in that he occupied that brief moment when a progressive politician could get away with wearing pinstripes and brass buttons during the last gasps of tailored clothing. Nowadays, he dresses much simpler, opting for comfortable casualwear and rarely updating his wardrobe. In an interview with Alta, his wife, Anne Gust Brown, revealed a bit about his current dress habits:

“He gets mad at me if I buy him a new sweater,” she said. “He’s like, ‘Ah, oh, I already have a sweater.’ The same with suits. It’s like, ‘I have a suit.’ I’m like, ‘I know, honey, but you wear the same one literally every day.’ He hates things. He’s not into possessions at all. He really just does not like to get things, either. He can live on almost nothing. He’s had the same pair of running shoes for 25 years—and I’m not kidding.”

Perhaps Brown is returning to his seminary roots.

Architect Russell Henderson took his TikTok followers on a chilling tour around the construction.

He explained how criminals stripped the entire skyscraper, including the elevators, who also charged residents for their stay.

“Drug dealing and prostitution thrived behind its grey walls,” Russell said.

“Of course there was no maintenance for the building so people threw their trash in the middle and even suicidal people through them selves over.

How abandoned skyscraper became world’s tallest SLUM ruled by ex-con hardman

The architect also painted the horrifying yet real picture of bodies and trash piling up to 14 floors in the 55-storey building.

Ponte City was built in the 1970s and houses 482 apartments and it remains the tallest residential skyscraper in South Africa.

The name Ponte means “bridge” in Latin, and was specifically named like that to symbolise the bridge between heaven and earth, Russell explained.

These can be two-bed, three-bed or studio flats.

The building’s cylinder shape is due to local regulations at the time, which required kitchens and bathrooms to have windows for light and ventilation.

The rather odd open void in the middle descends down to uneven natural rock.

“Architects designed an open centre void which allowed light and ventilation into both sides of the apartments,” he said.

Situated in Hillbrow, the desirable apartment building once sat right in the middle of a vibrant multicultural area full of coffee shops and bookstores.

“When the building opened in 1975, Ponte City was considered a prestigious and luxury place to live with apartments for the wealthy because of the breath-taking views across the centre of Johannesburg,” Russell explained.

“But after the Soweto uprising the market took a downturn.

“By the 1980s crime rate soared at the tower and the surrounding neighbourhood.

“The wealthy people living inside Ponte Tower began to move elsewhere in the city.

“Drugs, poverty, prostitution, gun crime and urban degradation were rife.

“Gang activity had caused the crime rate to soar in Ponte Tower’s neighbourhood.”

The building was now transformed and houses hundreds of modern and affordable apartments.

Communal areas for the building includes the capacity of over 50 shops, restaurants and banking facilities.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday publicly pressed tech billionaire Elon Musk to condemn antisemitism and find a way to combat it on his social media platform X as the pair met at a Tesla factory in Fremont, Calif.

“I hope you can find within the confines of the First Amendment the ability to stop not only antisemitism, or roll it back as best you can, but any collective hatred of the people that antisemitism represents,” Netanyahu urged Musk in the meeting, which was live-streamed on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. He added, “I encourage you to find the balance. It’s a tough one.”

While the meeting was largely cordial, Musk repeatedly declined Netanyahu’s call to forcefully denounce anti-Jewish hatred, which research shows has spiked on the platform since Musk bought it nearly a year ago. Musk has restored accounts previously banned for hate speech and has repeatedly criticized a prominent Jewish human rights organization, stoking a recent wave of antisemitic attacks.

Musk told Netanyahu that, while he’s personally against antisemitism, “free speech does at times mean that someone you don’t like is saying something you don’t like. If you don’t have that, then it’s not free speech.” He did not address his own role in promoting it.

The meeting came as each leader looks to the other to help fend off escalating criticism. The pair had said their meeting was intended to discuss artificial intelligence, but the conversation quickly veered to antisemitism and also touched on Iran as well as protests in both Israel and the United States against Netanyahu’s government.

Protesters who followed Netanyahu’s motorcade from the San Jose airport to the factory 17 miles north planned to continue protesting in San Francisco’s Union Square. Sunday night, Netanyahu critics projected “Welcome to Alcatraz Bibi” on the wall of the prison that is one of San Francisco’s most iconic landmarks.

For Netanyahu, the meeting with one of the world’s most prominent tech entrepreneurs comes amid outcry that his controversial push to overhaul Israel’s judiciary risks scaring off international investors and the tech community that has given Israel its reputation as a “start-up nation.” In remarks made in Israel before his departure for California, Netanyahu called Musk “the current leader of the most dramatic development in the new age and perhaps in general,” apparently referring to AI, and said he will “work toward encouraging him to invest in Israel in the coming years.”

For Musk, a personal visit from Netanyahu offered a chance to counter allegations of antisemitism after a series of tweets in which he blamed the Anti-Defamation League for trying to destroy X and threatened a lawsuit against the nonprofit. Research has found that antisemitic speech has risen dramatically on the platform since Musk acquired it last fall, and ADL leaders have said Musk’s recent criticism of the organization has further stoked hate online and off.

But on Monday, Musk twice passed up Netanyahu’s requests for a forceful, specific condemnation of antisemitism, pivoting instead to the importance of free speech and combating bots on X.

“Generally, I mean, I’m sort of against attacking any group,” Musk said. “You know, it doesn’t matter who it is.”

He went on, “I’m in favor of that which furthers civilization and which ultimately leads us to become a spacefaring civilization, where we understand the nature of the universe. So we can’t do that if there’s a lot of infighting and, you know, hatred and negativity. So, you know, obviously I’m against antisemitism. I’m against anti, really, anything that promotes hate and conflict.”

When Musk shifted to the importance of allowing free speech, Netanyahu politely pushed back.

“It doesn’t stop you from coming out, as you have, as I do in every possible form, and condemn antisemitism,” Netanyahu said. “The condemnation is quite separate from the question of access.”

Musk spoke instead about X’s newly announced plan to offer a lower pricing tier for its paid subscription service, which he described as “the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,” including those that amplify hateful content.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, said in a statement, “We appreciate PM Netanyahu for raising concerns about the proliferation of antisemitism on X/Twitter during his conversation with Elon Musk. We hope that Mr. Musk takes PM Netanyahu’s concerns seriously so that X/Twitter can become a safer and more welcome place for all.”

It is not the first time Musk and Netanyahu have spoken amid controversy over Musk’s dalliances with antisemitic tropes. This summer, Netanyahu smoothed things over in a conversation with Musk after the X owner compared the Jewish financier George Soros, a frequent target of antisemitic conspiracy theories, to the Jewish X-Men villain Magneto. Netanyahu’s government minister tasked with fighting antisemitism made a of point of saying that Musk’s comments were not antisemitic, despite widespread outcry in Israel. The two spoke about AI at the time, according to reports.

Netanyahu’s traveled to the United States for the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly, where he is expected to speak on Thursday. The visit to California was a late addition to Netanyahu’s itinerary.

Early in Monday’s meeting, the two found common ground in their concern over the potential for artificial “superintelligence,” which Netanyahu warned could lead to “the destruction of democracy” and Musk mused could end with robots controlling humanity.

Following the exchanges over antisemitism, Musk brought up the protests against Netanyahu’s government and noted the presence of protesters outside.

“I probably got the most amount of pushback at Tesla about this interview as anything I’ve ever done,” Musk said, adding, “I think it’s primarily the judicial reform question.”

Netanyahu defended his commitment to democracy, saying “Israel will always be a democratic country” and arguing that its judiciary had grown too powerful. His government’s move to diminish the influence of Israel’s Supreme Court has sparked months of nationwide demonstrations, arguably the greatest domestic crisis in the country’s 75-year history.

Musk suggested they return to the topic of AI. Following their one-on-one interview, the pair held an “AI safety roundtable” that included OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman and MIT physicist Max Tegmark, who has warned of the existential risks he believes AI poses.

Bachelor in Paradise standouts Michael Allio and Danielle Maltby have split up after finding love on the beach during the most recent season of the ABC dating series.

Allio, who was first introduced to Bachelor franchise viewers while competing on Katie Thurston’s The Bachelorette season that aired in 2020, was a guest on Monday’s episode of the Trading Secrets podcast. During the appearance, he told host Jason Tartick that the couple had parted ways.

“It’s still incredibly fresh,” Allio said. “I guess I’ll just come out with it: We’re not together anymore. It’s not what we planned. We both threw a lot into this relationship, and it’s really awful when it doesn’t work out.”

He continued, “When you realize that love is there, but you’re not necessarily compatible, you mourn the loss not of just that person and that friend in your life, but also the future that you had envisioned. And it’s to no fault of hers — she poured everything into this. I just have so much admiration.”

Allio added that the pair is “still working through some things and trying to stay close. Last couple months have been really tough.”

For her part, Maltby has not publicly commented on the relationship status and whether they have broken up.

Allio and Maltby developed their romance during the eighth season of Bachelor in Paradise that aired its finale in November. The pair bonded over having experienced tragedy, as Allio’s wife, Laura, passed away from cancer in 2019, and he is raising their son, James; Maltby’s fiancé died by suicide in 2011.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter following the season eight finale, the couple explained why they weren’t in a rush to get engaged.

“We don’t necessarily feel the pressure of timelines that maybe the audience imposes or the show has in place,” Allio said at the time. “We will 100 percent march to our own drum, and I think that’s what works best for us. So it’s all of those little moments that we now get to share together and begin building memories as a couple, which I can’t wait for.”

Sherri Shepherd attempts to clear any confusion regarding The “Sherri” show’s return amid the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in her Season 2 return on Monday.

The actress and comedian opened the show addressing the controversy, telling viewers that the talk show is not in violation of the guild’s strike rules by returning despite other shows like “The Talk” and “The Drew Barrymore Show” going on pause shortly after announcing their returns. Jennifer Hudson’s talk show has also been placed on hold after previously announcing a Sept. 18 return.

“This summer you all may have seen your favorite actors and Hollywood stars have been on the picket lines with the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. There has been so much confusion about who can work and who can’t work. Well, I’m a SAG-AFTRA actress and I actually marched with some of my colleagues while in Los Angeles recently,” the actress shared.

She continued: “But here’s the thing, talk shows in general fall under a different union contract code, so we’re allowed to come back unless you’re a WGA show. The ‘Sherri’ show is not a WGA show and we have never employed WGA writers, so us coming back to work isn’t crossing the picket line.”

As it stands, “Sherri” is the only daytime talk show to come back aside from “The Tamron Hall Show” and “Live with Kelly and Mark” — both of which, are also not WGA shows. SAG-AFTRA members are allowed to work on talk shows as they’re covered by the Network TV Code. “The View,” which is a WGA is currently still airing and has been picketed by the guild.

“As a comic, my comedic take on the headlines is my voice. I write the jokes. I’m the writer …Producers help me shape my words. That’s why we don’t have WGA writers at ‘Sherri,’” Shepherd explained. “My heart is breaking for all of the people that can’t work right now and I hope our industry can get this strike resolved soon.”

“I stand in solidarity with my union,” shepherd says, addressing several of the union’s issues in contention right now including residuals and A.I.

“Residuals during times that I was not working kept the lights on. My residual payments helped me care for Jeffrey when he was born at 25 weeks. So good residual payments are important to actors,” she shared. “And the big sticking point is Artificial Intelligence – which could replace working actors from working. And it couldl replace writers. I’m here to tell you, A.I. can’t replace all of this sass.”

Summary

  • Gal Gadot has confirmed that she will be returning as Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman 3, which is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU.
  • Despite the mixed reception of Wonder Woman 1984, Gadot’s portrayal of Diana Prince has been highly praised throughout the franchise.
  • Additionally, there are plans for a TV series based on the Amazons’ mythology, potentially serving as a prequel to Gadot’s Wonder Woman films, and the possibility of Gadot voicing the character in animated content.

Gal Gadot is definitely coming back as to play Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 3 as a part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. Earlier this month, the actress confirmed that a third movie of her adventures as the famous Amazon was in development, and now she offers more details about her future as the popular hero.

Even when Wonder Woman 1984 was not so well received as the first movie starring Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins, there’s no doubt that the actress’ version of Diana Prince has been one of the most celebrated aspects of the franchise since she first appeared in Batman v Superman, so when David Zaslav announced a reboot of their universe based on DC characters, many fans were shocked by the thought of Gadot not playing the character anymore.

Fortunately, it seems like she won’t be sharing the same fortune as Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman. In a recent interview with Flaunt, Gadot offered further details on her future as Wonder Woman while describing the meeting she had with Gunn and Safran about her role in the franchise:

“I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran. They told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell.”

Wonder Woman from 2017 was one of the biggest hits for the DCU, which was recently dethroned as the highest-grossing film exclusively directed by a woman by Barbie, another major blockbuster from Warner Bros. Pictures.

Gal Gadot Could Return as Wonder Woman Before the Third Film

Warner Bros.

Of course the actress announcement of a third movie being in development doesn’t mean that it’ll be one of the next projects within the new DCU, but she could return as Wonder Woman sooner than expected. As a part of the list of the first productions announced for the first phase of the new franchise, titled Gods & Monsters, Gunn confirmed that a tv series based on the mythology of the Amazons was coming to Max.

The show will be set on Themyscira, and although it may take place before the birth of Diana, the events narrated on the plot could lead to that moment, connecting with the next movie or even with the first Wonder Woman film, working as a prequel to Gadot’s adventures as the hero.

And that’s not all. Earlier this year, Gunn revealed that he was interested in developing new animated content related to Wonder Woman. And as DC Studios co-CEO has already confirmed, any actor that plays a part in the new franchise in the animated format will reprise that same role in live-action, which means if an animated movie or series center on Wonder Woman gets made as part of the new canon, Gadot will play the part even if it’s just to lend her voice.

Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York Monday, Ashley Judd delivered a passionate speech about the need to end male sexual violence and the consequences she has faced for speaking up, including the loss of work.

“Male sexual violence is the up with which we will not put, and, for me, it’s just the hill on which I’m willing to die,” Judd said. “I’ve seen too much agony, too many shattered souls, and too many women controlled and held back as farmers, as civil servants, as contributors to their community because they couldn’t plan and space the births of their children because when they introduce family planning they get beaten, or used for household labor and fetching water and cooking and cleaning while their sons eat more than they do.”

Judd, who is global goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund, has been outspoken about the issue of sexual violence against women and went on the record as one of Harvey Weinstein’s named accusers in The New York Times exposé in 2017. She began her speech Monday by listing several acts of sexual violence that she said had experienced starting at the age of 7, and then broadened the issue to examples she’s seen across the world and locally, including how the porn industry has normalized violent behavior against women, such as choking.

“And still, some say boys will be boys, but we say here today that we love them and they will be held accountable for their actions, their attitudes, their sins of omission. And frankly, I’m fed up with the emphasis being on building resilience in girls and women because we’ve gotta look upstream and see from whence this need for resilience comes,” Judd said.

The actress added that she has been labeled as a “man hater” and lost jobs for speaking out against sexual violence, most notably after reading a spoken word poem at the Women’s March in Washington D.C. that quoted President Trump’s infamous comments on female anatomy.

“Now it seems like you’re with me, but I kind of assumed this is the part where I’ve lost everybody and the media calls me a man hater and of course, my social media goes bananas with rape and death threats. I’m used to that,” Judd said. “This will be what it will be because we’re here to tell the truth. This is telling truth to patriarchy. Just like when I lost a big job after the Women’s March. I quoted the president. He said it, he got elected. I quoted him, I got fired and lost income that would’ve changed my life.”

Still, Judd said she had hope that there is a solution for “ending male entitlement to female bodies,” starting with a change in the ecosystems that keep women from having equal access to schooling and other opportunities, as well as more grassroots organizations supporting female political candidates and men coming forward and speaking up about it the need for change. She also listed an example of meeting a young, Syrian refuge who was a victim of rape and spoke out about her experience.

“So join her and me in telling the truth about male sexual violence. Tell it in your workplaces. Tell it on the streets. Tell it in public transportation. Tell it in your bedrooms,” she said.

The Real Housewives of Orange County star Shannon Beador was arrested and taken into custody over the weekend on charges of drunk driving and a misdemeanor hit-and-run, according to the arrest report obtained by ET.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning, shortly after 1 a.m. P.T., when Newport Beach police officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run incident involving Beador. She was subsequently arrested and booked on these charges, only to be released shortly thereafter.

TMZ was the first to report on Beador’s arrest.

In response to the incident, Beador’s attorney, Michael Fell, tells ET, “I spent quite a bit of time with Shannon yesterday. She is extremely apologetic and remorseful. We will be awaiting the official information on this case as it becomes available, and Shannon is prepared to accept full responsibility for her actions.”

A spokesperson for the Newport Beach Police Department told NBC News that they could not provide details regarding the specific circumstances of the case, including whether there were any injuries involved in the hit-and-run incident.

ET has reached out to Bravo.

The incident brings to mind a recent storyline featured on RHOC, in which Beador and her fellow castmate, Gina Kirschenheiter, engaged in a heated dispute revolving around Beador’s claim that she had prevented Kirschenheiter’s children from being sent to Child Protective Services following Kirschenheiter’s 2019 arrest for a DUI.

At the time, Beador had denied making such a claim. However, during an episode of the reality TV show, a flashback aired that seemingly contradicted her denial, revealing the conversation in which she had made the statement.

Movies about movies tend to be as sentimental as Cinema Paradiso, the all-time tearjerker in the genre, or as caustic as the recent Babylon. But Lone Scherfig finds a fine balance between love of movies and the harsh wider world in The Movie Teller, a beautifully made coming-of-age film about Maria Margarita, who acts out the Hollywood movies she has seen at the local cinema in her small mining town. Set in the Chilean desert in the late 1960s and early ’70s, the drama benefits greatly from the sure hand and clear eye Scherfig has brought to her best films, other period pieces including An Education (2009) and Their Finest (2016). All that can’t quite make up for the rocky screenplay, though.

The story is adapted from the Chilean writer Hernan Rivera Letelier’s 2009 novel. The first version of the screenplay was tackled years ago by the Brazilian director Walter Salles, and more recently reworked by the Spanish writer-directors Isabel Coixet and Rafa Russo. The film has the cobbled-together feel of a literary adaptation that is too pared-down at the start and overstuffed toward the end.

The Movie Teller

The Bottom Line

A sweet but minor addition to the movies-about-movies genre.

Venue: Toronto International Film Festival (Special Presentations)
Cast: Daniel Bruhl, Berenice Bejo, Antonio de la Torre, Sara Becker, Alondra Valenzuela
Director: Lone Scherfig
Writers: Isabel Coixet, Rafa Russo, Walter Salles

1 hour 56 minutes

We follow Maria Margarita as she grows from a girl, played by Alondra Valenzuela in a dynamic performance, to a young woman, played by Sara Becker, who makes her affecting. Becker’s opening voiceover, used sparingly, says, “I grew up in the driest place on Earth,” the Atacama Desert, site of a town for workers in the saltpeter mine. Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) plays her mother, Maria Magnolia, straining against the limits of her life as the mother of four and wife of a miner, Medardo (a solid Antonio de la Torre). In the smaller role of Hauser, the German manager of the mining company, Daniel Bruhl doesn’t have much more to do than give knowing, sympathetic looks, but he does that effectively. With its Danish director and international mix of writers and cast, the Spanish-language film is a virtual United Nations, but that part at least works seamlessly.

True to her lucid, no-frills style, Scherfig often keeps the camera on a face in the middle of the screen, holding just long enough for us to see what no one says: Maria Magnolia’s desperation, the haggard Medardo’s awareness of it. We observe what their young daughter might see without completely comprehending: the way Hauser brushes her mother’s hand.

The one bright spot in this family’s life is the cinema. On Sunday afternoon, they dress in their best and go to see Paths of Glory, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence or Some Like It Hot.  We see very brief glimpses of these movies along with the inevitable shots of the audience looking rapt, which Scherfig thankfully keeps to a minimum.

When Medardo loses the use of his legs in a mining accident, the family can’t afford more than one movie ticket, and in turn each of the children is sent to watch and tell the film to the others. In episodes that briefly add a comic tone, one brother can’t finish telling Breakfast at Tiffany’s because “Who can understand women?” When another tells about the lovers parting on a railway platform in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg it turns into a detailed description of the train.

But Maria Margarita is a natural, acting out films with dramatic flair. One day she is Jack Lemmon in The Apartment, the next she is Spartacus (well, who isn’t?). The specific movies are never the point. The soothing, magical escape they offer is. Bracingly, The Movie Teller recognizes that illusion can’t last.

The film was shot in the actual Atacama Desert, and Daniel Aranyo’s cinematography brings clear, cool light to the dusty landscape and beige palette. That look is punctuated by the bright pastels of Maria Magnolia’s wardrobe, a sign that she doesn’t belong in this drab life, and soon she runs off for good.

The story takes a leap in time and begins racing through events. Becker takes over the role, and the adult is now a vibrant, cheerful woman who works as a cleaner and also earns money telling movies to the town, and for individual clients. From then on the film shortchanges too many tragic turns, including a traumatic incident that Maria Margarita signals has happened by acting out Johnny Belinda.

The film is set during a turbulent period in Chile, and the slightest political undercurrent runs through most of it, including a brief scene of workers trying to organize against the capitalist mine owners. Those scenes don’t amount to much. But very near the end, it is 1970 and suddenly we hear news reports that the socialist Salvador Allende has been elected president, swiftly followed three years later by Augusto Pinochet’s military coup, events that result in violence and the closing of the mine. Despite a few scenes of Maria Margarita’s brother’s political activism, the news lands abruptly, like an intrusion of the real world on the hermetic town.

That isn’t necessarily a wrong-headed choice; the social changes might have hit the characters in just that blind-siding way. But like too many other dramatic plot turns here, it lands too jarringly to be convincing. Graceful but slight, in the end The Movie Teller tries to do too much and accomplishes too little to fulfill its big ambitions.

Ariana Grande and husband Dalton Gomez are making their split official, and have both filed for divorce, ET can confirm.

TMZ was first to report that Grande’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, filed first on Monday, with Gomez immediately following suit with his response. The outlet also reports that the couple had a prenup, and worked everything out prior to filing — they have been ironing out the details in the two months since a source confirmed their split after two years of marriage to ET in July.

A source told ET at the time, “Ariana and Dalton tried to make things work, but ultimately they were just not a good fit. Dalton has been very private and low-key about their relationship with his work colleagues and hasn’t been talking a lot about their split.”

Another source noted, “Ariana and Dalton’s friends have always been concerned by their whirlwind romance and felt their relationship would ultimately be short-lived. Their relationship has been rocky at different points, and they’ve had trouble making time for each other with scheduling issues.”

A third source also emphasized the toll that the couple’s work schedules took on the relationship, saying, “Ariana and Dalton have had issues for a while and tried working through them but couldn’t. Ariana has been filming Wicked overseas and working a lot. The couple ultimately decided to end things.”

Following her separation from Gomez, Grande has begun dating her Wicked co-star, Ethan Slater. Slater filed for divorce from his wife, Lilly Jay, in July, one week after news about his relationship with Grande went public.

“Ethan is trying to be as amicable as possible with Lilly as he navigates his next steps. He wants to be the best dad he can be, regardless of the current circumstances,” a source told ET in August of the Broadway star, who shares a son with his estranged wife. “He is taking things day by day and trying to keep his private life private, out of respect for everyone involved.”

As for Grande, the source said that she was “trying to give Ethan some space as he figures everything out,” but noted that “their relationship is still progressing.”

“Maxine’s Baby,” the upcoming documentary about Tyler Perry’s life and career, will make its world premiere at this year’s AFI Fest.

The Amazon Studios and Bekele Films documentary, directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, will debut on Friday, Oct. 27 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as one of the festival’s centerpiece screenings.

“Tyler Perry is a creative force of nature – a multi-hyphenate who forged his own path to seismic impact in the world of storytelling while also inspiring the next generation to follow in his footsteps,” stated AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale announcing the film’s selection. “’Maxine’s Baby’ is an epic celebration of a modern maverick, and it is AFI’s honor to shine a proper light upon Mr. Perry and the film at AFI Fest.”

Last month, Variety exclusively announced that the documentary, which was nearly a decade in the making, was heading to Amazon. The film aims present a “tender, intimate portrait” of the billionaire writer, actor, filmmaker, studio head and media mogul, with its title as a nod to Perry’s late mother Willie Maxine Perry, who died in 2009.

“We are honored to premiere ‘Maxine’s Baby’ at AFI Fest. Working on this film for the past decade has been a life-changing journey for the both of us,” stated Bekele and Ortiz. “Getting intimately acquainted with the man behind the icon while witnessing the transformative impact of Mr. Perry’s work within various communities has been truly awe-inspiring.”

The filmmakers continued: “We hope this film is more than a road to success story, but rather, a meditation on healing, unconditional love and an inspiration to audiences.”

In addition to directing the film, Bekele produced the project under her Bekele Films banner alongside Jasmine K. White and Asante White. Following its AFI Fest debut, “Maxine’s Baby” will begin streaming on Prime Video on Nov. 17.

A man has received charges related to a number of crimes that took place all on Saturday night in both Surrey, B.C., and Delta.

Surrey RCMP said around 10:38 p.m., officers responded to a call that a man had broken into a home on 125 Street and assaulted a person inside.

The suspect then fled the home in a vehicle, police said.

Responding Mounties then searched the area when they arrived, and found that the suspect had smashed into several parked vehicles as they left.

Around 20 minutes later, police said the suspect vehicle then was involved in a number of crashes in Delta, along Ladner Trunk Road. A vehicle flipped as a result of a crash and three occupants were transported to hospital with one suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Yellowstone made some noise with its broadcast debut on CBS.

The premiere episode aired on Sunday to 6.56M viewers, making it the top entertainment program of the week, according to fast nationals from Nielsen. It’s also the largest audience for a scripted series on the broadcast networks since the season finale of NCIS in late May.

While Taylor Sheridan’s drama series already had quite the following, this audience is significantly higher than when the first episode debuted on Paramount Network in 2018. At the time, the episode scored about 2.8M viewers, marking a 132% increase in viewers on CBS.

These are early numbers, and this post will be updated when the final data is in. However, CBS is estimating that the audience will increase to around 6.82M viewers when out-of-home viewing is included.

The episode also scored an early 0.9 rating among adults 25-54, which CBS predicts will jump to a 1.0 after OOH viewing.

Yellowstone is the headline of CBS’ fall lineup  which has been impacted by both the writers strike and actors strike, replacing The Equalizer at 9 p.m. CBS reports that the Yellowstone debut was up 11% versus the premiere night for The Equalizer and East New York last year (excluding OOH viewing).

The series was led in by 60 Minutes, which also had a successful night airing an interview with Colorado head coach Deion Sanders. The episode averaged 11.37M viewers, which is up 19% versus the 60 Minutes premiere last year.

CBS estimates that the 60 Minutes audience will grow to over 12M viewers when OOH viewing is accounted for. If so, it’ll be the largest audience for the show since November 2021.

This makes sense, considering Sanders’ overhauled Colorado team has hit the ground running in their first three regular season games. The first two games of the season broke records for Fox, and the contentious matchup with Colorado State on Saturday — which saw Colorado come out victorious at the end of double overtime — is likely to score big numbers as well.

Get ready to assemble! A new Lego Marvel moving is coming to Disney+ on Oct. 27.

Marvel tweeted out the news on Monday morning, alongside a teaser poster for the film showing red Lego blocks being constructed into the Avengers’ “A.” Marvel hasn’t yet released further details such as the film’s storyline or cast.

The upcoming special is the latest in a long-running string of Lego Marvel animated shorts, which started in 2013 with the 5-episode TV series “Lego Marvel Superheroes: Maximum Overload.” Since then, they’ve only released standalone 20-minute animated shorts: 2015’s ‘”Avengers Ressembled,” 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and 2018’s “Black Panther – Trouble in Wakanda.”

“Code Red” was first teased at Lego’s booth at SDCC, where they displayed the film poster in person.

While “Code Red” is likely to be another 20-minute short, it will at least hold die-hard Marvel fans over until the highly anticipated “The Marvels,” which sees Brie Larson reprise her role as Carole Danvers, in November. Also coming up this year in the Marvel Universe is “Loki” Season 2, out Oct. 6, and “What If…?” Season 2, “Echo” and “X-Men ’97” all due in early 2024.

In the meantime, all of the previous Marvel Lego shorts are currently available to stream on Prime Video. If you aren’t a Prime member, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial here.

At its Max streaming event earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed a new era is coming for Harry Potter fans. The company announced a TV series based on all seven books about the boy wizard written by J.K. Rowling. See below for the most current answers to the most important questions about the project.

What is the Harry Potter TV series about?

“This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content about the project, which he also assured fans would be “a faithful adaptation.”

Early reports had each season of the series focusing on one book in the Harry Potter book series, which consists of seven novels, but Bloys said the project would run for “10 consecutive years,” which would seem to defy the 1 season, 1 book assertion. For those who say Fantastic Beasts could be leveraged to provide 10 seasons over 10 years, WBD brass said specifically during the announcement that FB will not be a part of the series.

Whatever the case, Bloys promised that, as the company embarks on its new Harry Potter adventure, “We do so with the full care and craft of this franchise.”

When will the Harry Potter series be released?

The series is expected to be on air in 2025/26, and given that Warner Bros. Discovery has embarked on a high-profile revamp of its streaming service, even changing its name from HBO Max to just Max, it’s a pretty good bet the company wants Harry Potter casting his spell on users of the platform ASAP. Ditto J.K. Rowling, whose production company posted a 74% drop in profits last year.

At a Goldman Sachs conference this week, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made pointed out the need for more Hogwarts magic explicitly. Ignoring the Harry-less Fantastic Beasts films, the CEO insisted the boy wizard presents a huge opportunity, claiming that the IP has been “underused” of late.

“We haven’t done anything with Harry Potter for more than a decade,” he said, before going on to note that when one examines the performance of Warner Bros. over the last 20 years without accounting for it’s big three — Potter, Lord of the Rings and DC — the company’s performance is “relatively flat.”

Zaslav called that type of big-ticket IP “one of the big differentiators of this company.” And he seems to be counting on it to make a big difference.

“When you put those franchises in, it’s the best-performing studio in the world. We need to deploy our best capital, and we need to do it with the best creative people in the world,” he said.

How to watch the series

It will, of course, be on Max once the series is ready. The service has three price tiers: Max Ad Light, which goes for $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and allows two concurrent streams; Max Ad Free will be priced at $15.99 a month, or $149.99 a year, and will also allow two concurrent streams; and Max Ultimate Ad Free which costs $19.99 a month, or $199.99 a year, and allows access to four concurrent streams.

In addition, WBD’s other current epic literary adaptation, House of the Dragon, is available not only on the company’s streaming service, but also to cable subscribers on HBO. The Potter series will follow suit, according to execs. So if you have HBO via your cable provider, you’re all set.

If you’re in Canada, WBD has struck a multi-year licensing agreement with Crave for the likes of Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, the DC Universe and HBO content.

Which actors are starring in the series? Are any of the original Harry Potter stars returning?

There will be new actors playing the series’ main characters, but it’s unlikely anyone has been cast yet. In fact, Max’s search earlier this year was centered on finding a showrunner.

“We have been trying to be very close to the vest,” said Bloys. “We haven’t gone out to agencies. We have our own internal process where we’ve been thinking about people but we have not wanted to go out into the world. Now that the news is out there…we’ll start going out to the business.”

As for a return of any of the film franchise’s stars — like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson or Rupert Grint — never say never. It would certainly be a PR boost for the series and, while new actors will be cast in the primary roles, there are always flashforwards or the currently en vogue multiverse plot ploy that could create space for more familiar faces in the series.

But Daniel Radcliffe has said he is fine with sitting on the sidelines.

“My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere,” Radcliffe told ComicBook.com. “So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way. But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.”

Another longtime Potter player who likely won’t be involved is David Yates, who directed the last four movies, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) and Deathly Hallows Part One and Two (2010 and 2011). In addition, Yates took on the Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts trilogy. He says there has been no conversation about his involvement with the series. And it sounds like he’s ok with that.

“Huge affection and a lovely group of people I worked with,” Yates told Deadline. “But we haven’t had a conversation since we finished it.”

“It’s been about ‘Let’s just park it, and be done for a while,’” he said of the Potter franchise.

“Never say never, I would say, but I’m excited about moving on,” he said.

Will J.K. Rowling be involved in the new Harry Potter TV series?

Yes. A deal for J.K. Rowling’s involvement in the series had been the biggest hurdle in its path to the screen: The author has creative control over any exploitation of her work. That agreement has now been finalized.

Rowling and longtime confederates Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts are exec producing. David Heyman, who developed the films, was talks to do the same. Rowling’s Brontë Film and TV is producing with Warner Bros. Television. Brontë Film and TV was founded by Rowling and her literary agent, Neil Blair, in 2012.

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” said Rowling in a statement.

Since Warners launched its streaming service, there’s always been a goal to exploit Warners’ biggest franchise for streaming. Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav, taking the reigns after the merger last year, met with Rowling several times in the UK. He’s even spoken up in support of the author, who has been involved in an ongoing controversy over her comments on transgender issues. Asked about the streaming event about those controversies, Bloys demurred.

“No, I don’t think this is the forum [to discuss that],” he said. “That’s a very online conversation, very nuanced and complicated and not something we’re going to get into.”

“Our priority is what’s on the screen,” Bloys continued. “Obviously, the Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive and about love and self-acceptance. That’s our priority — what’s on screen.”

As for how close the author will be to the series, Bloys said, “[Rowling] will be involved. She’s an executive producer on the show. Her insights are going to be helpful on that.”

He was clear, however, that WBD wasn’t entirely dependent on Rowling for the project.

“The TV show is new and we’re excited about that. But, remember, we’ve been in the Potter business for 20 years. This is not a new decision for us, we’re very comfortable being in the Potter business.”

How much will the series cost to produce?

“You know we make shows at this scale with House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones,” said Bloys. “I imagine will be that scale or higher. The shorter answer is whatever it takes to make a quality show.”

Per Deadline reporting, House of the Dragon cost nearly $200 million and was the subject of HBO’s biggest marketing campaign ever, valued at over $100M in media spend (that’s a combo of ad spot value and hard cash shelled out). So fans can expect a similar outlay for the Potter series “or higher,” according to HBO/Max boss Bloys.

Will there be other Harry Potter-related projects?

“We’re free to do anything we want,” Zaslav said, before hedging a bit. “Some areas we need to do with J.K., other areas we have the full ability to go forward. This is a full deployment on Max of Harry Potter. We can still develop other properties.”

It’s unclear where those boundaries lie, but it is clear that Warner Bros. Discovery would like more Potter. Since he took control of the merged company, Zaslav has stressed multiple times his focus on franchises, with mining the Harry Potter IP identified as a top priority.

How long has this been in the works?

Max and its then-parent company WarnerMedia started exploring a potential Harry Potter TV series a couple of years ago. At the time, Warner Bros. appointed Kids, Young Adult and Classics president Tom Ascheim to manage the Wizarding World and Potter franchises, which include theme parks, tours and the $9.1 billion-grossing theatrical library that spans the Harry Potter and spinoff Fantastic Beasts titles. Under that setup, Ascheim became WarnerMedia’s senior rep in its relationship with Rowling and her representatives, and exploratory conversations for a Max series got underway.

After the Discovery acquisition was completed a year ago, that unit was disbanded and Ascheim exited the company. However, the importance of the Harry Potter IP has only grown post-merger.

Zaslav spoke about his family’s own personal connection to the series.

“My wife and I, we read (the Harry Potter books) to each of our three kids,” said Zaslav, going off script at the Max announcement. “It’s really moving, for ten consecutive years, people will see Harry Potter on HBO; I mean it’s really something.”

First things first, we have to know, why Neighbours? How did that come about and what drew you to the project?

Mischa: Well, this new series is very different, it’s not the long-running Neighbours that was on for 40 years. Honestly, they’ve approached me in the past, but now that the series is rebooting, it just felt like the right time. I liked the role of Reece Sinclair when I read it; it felt like something I could sink my teeth into and play. It was just a nice opportunity to go and do this arc for the couple of months that I was out there in Australia. They were very nice to me!

Awesome! Can you tell us a little bit about your character Reece?

Mischa: Well, she comes from the wealthy Sinclair family and is supposedly in Australia as a representative for her father’s businesses. However, you soon find out she also has an ulterior motive for being there. She’s the eldest child, a hard worker, but she’s distracted easily, especially by love. She soon meets somebody when she gets to Ramsay Street that sort of takes her for a ride for a minute.

Sounds intriguing, can’t wait to find out more! So, shall we play a little game of Confirm or Deny?

Mischa: Sure, let’s do it!

  • R2-D2’s true combat abilities are revealed, highlighting his status as a formidable warrior in the galaxy.
  • The Scourge uncloaks R2-D2’s latent ferocity, challenging preconceived notions about the bond between R2-D2 and C-3PO.
  • R2-D2’s silent valor and military prowess have been instrumental in altering the galaxy’s course, making him a beacon of hope and resilience.

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Star Wars: Dark Droids #2

The Star Wars saga embarks on yet another thrilling revelation, redefining the mettle of one of its seemingly understated heroes – R2-D2. Often perceived as a beacon of heartwarming robotic camaraderie, this diminutive astromech is on the verge of being acknowledged as a force not to be underestimated. In a recent gripping installment of Marvel’s Dark Droids series, aficionados of the epic tale are greeted with an affirmation that the stature of R2-D2 extends beyond the affable droid that graced our screens for decades; he is, undeniably, a formidable warrior whose prowess could eclipse the might of many in the galaxy.

With the release of Star Wars: Dark Droids #2, crafted meticulously by the seasoned hands of Charles Soule, Luke Ross, Alex Sinclair, and Travis Lanham, readers traverse a sinister plot woven by the malevolent Scourge. This nefarious entity, insistent on engulfing mechanical life in the galaxy, uncloaks an aspect of R2-D2 that perhaps only his golden counterpart, C-3PO, could fathom as per Screen Rant.

Marvel Comics

In a spine-chilling turn of events, C-3PO is ensnared by the Scourge, unleashing a turbulent voyage that challenges our preconceived notions about the bonds and strengths that exist between these two cherished droids. It is through this malicious entity, masked as Threepio, that we witness a raw acknowledgment of Artoo’s latent ferocity. A chilling declaration, “I need to be careful…This one is a warrior,” lays bare the underbelly of a legacy that transcends mere robotic servitude. R2-D2 emerges as a sentinel of undeterred valor, a battle-hardened veteran whose narrative has quietly embroidered itself into the very fabric of the galactic struggles depicted throughout the Skywalker Saga.

The Silent Valor of R2-D2: A Legacy of Resilience and Unmatched Courage

The chronicles of R2-D2 reverberate with tales of undying loyalty and unmatched courage. This diminutive dynamo has not only orchestrated critical moments that have altered the galaxy’s course but has proven himself as a seasoned veteran of warfare, standing resolute beside luminaries like Anakin Skywalker during the gruesome Clone Wars, and later, championing the Rebel Alliance’s cause with Luke Skywalker. An unsung hero, whose feats have perennially teetered between the realms of victory and defeat, Artoo’s military prowess and agility have afforded the galaxy moments of respite and triumph in the face of insurmountable odds.

As the Scourge scurries to eliminate what it perceives as a significant threat, it unwittingly elevates R2-D2’s status to a warrior whose reputation rivals that of legendary figures like Yoda or Luke Skywalker. While the enigmatic droid has often filled the role of a lovable sidekick, bringing moments of levity and companionship to an otherwise brutal galactic warfare, it stands to reason that his contribution spans beyond the effervescent chirps and comedic interludes.

Artoo’s odyssey has been one of silent valor, a beacon of resilience that has unfailingly lit the path for the franchise’s celebrated heroes. In a galaxy fraught with dangers lurking at every corner, the recent revelation posits R2-D2 as a bastion of hope, a relentless warrior whose depth of character is only now beginning to unfurl in its full, formidable glory.

Thus, as the pages of Star Wars: Dark Droids #2 unfurl, we stand at the cusp of a revolutionary shift, a moment where the veils are lifted, and the true magnitude of R2-D2’s prowess becomes an undisputed testament to his legacy. A legacy that affirms that in the vast cosmos of Star Wars, even the smallest beings can cast the most colossal shadows.

It didn’t take long to learn Panos Panay’s new home. The industry veteran, instrumental in developing Windows 11 and the Microsoft Surface line of 2-in-1s and laptops, has reportedly been hired by Amazon, according to Bloomberg. Microsoft’s former chief product officer will lead Amazon’s division responsible for Alexa and Echo smart devices.

Panay will replace Dave Limp, the Amazon executive previously in charge of Alexa and Echo, who announced his retirement last month. Panay’s move from one Seattle-based tech giant to another will have him overseeing a division hit by layoffs last year. Ironically, Amazon and Microsoft each have fall hardware events scheduled this week.

Microsoft brought on Panay in 2004 as a group program manager. He oversaw the development of Surface devices during their formative years, where he became an event mainstay with his passionate and detailed product launch keynotes. He was promoted in 2018 to chief product officer before landing his last Microsoft position as executive vice president in 2021. Panay said he “decided to turn the page and write the next chapter.” Yusuf Mehdi will replace him as Microsoft’s head of Windows and Surface teams.

We reached out to Amazon for comment and confirmation, and we’ll update this article when we hear something.

2023 Best Canadian Feature Film Award, Amplify Voices Awards, Short Cuts Awards, Changemaker Award, People’s Choice Awards, along with FIPRESCI and NETPAC film jury awards, close the Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival® ― which concluded last evening with the Closing Night screening of Thom Zimny’s Sly at the Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre and Roy Thomson Hall ―  has announced its award recipients for the 48th edition of the Festival.

“We’re grateful to all the audience members, artists, industry professionals, and supporters who graced Toronto’s cinemas, red carpets, meeting spaces, and streets,” said Cameron Bailey, TIFF CEO. “As we recognize award winners today, we thank everyone who contributed to this glorious, collective gift.”

“From the most revered veterans to the freshest new voices, this year’s Festival played host to the diverse range of filmmakers Toronto is known for,” said Anita Lee, TIFF Chief Programming Officer. “And Toronto’s filmgoers turned up in huge numbers to be a part of the celebration. We’re grateful to our film jurors for their invaluable contributions, for championing emerging talent, and for enriching the film community with their expertise and passion.”

SHORT CUTS AWARDS

Short Cuts Awards are for Best Film, Best Canadian Film, and the Share Her Journey Award for best film by a woman. Each winning film will receive a bursary of $10,000 CAD. The winners of the three awards are:

Short Cuts Award for Best Film: Electra, dir. Daria Kashcheeva
Jury’s statement: “Singular and accomplished, this sickly sweet nightmare of a film packs a mighty final punch. Visceral and infinitely textured, it leads us down a contorted rabbit hole with thematic and visual prowess. With great pleasure, the jury presents the Short Cuts Award for Best Short Film to Electra, directed by Daria Kashcheeva. Electra resonates with under-the-skin discomfort long after the film is over.”

Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Film: Motherland, dir. Jasmin Mozaffari
Jury’s statement: “Displaying great mastery of craft, this incredibly ambitious film excels in its direction, performances, sound, and picture, with every frame exhibiting love and intention. The jury is pleased to present the Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Short Film to Motherland directed by Jasmin Mozaffari. The film left us with one word collectively: wow.”

Share Her Journey Award: Shé (Snake), dir. Renee Zhan
Jury’s statement: “For this film’s incredibly original and surreal creativity, which is matched with beautiful acting, the jury is thrilled to give the Short Cuts Share Her Journey Award to Renee Zhan for Shé (Snake). It’s not common to be bewitched by grotesque creatures in a film, but here they captured the hearts of the audience thanks to their humour and charm.”

Honourable Mention: Gaby’s Hills, dir. Zoé Pelchat
Jury’s statement: “Featuring an ensemble cast with incredible organic chemistry, Gaby’s Hills delivered a moving portrayal of a girl in puberty returning home to find her womanhood reflected back to her in the community. Carefully crafted with layered themes, the jury is delighted to present an honourable mention for the Short Cuts Share Her Journey Award to Gaby’s Hills, directed by Zoé Pelchat.”

The 2023 jurors for the Short Cuts Awards are Aisha Jamal, Araya Mengesha, and Shasha Nakhai.

NETPAC AWARD

The 2023 NETPAC jury members include: Sung Moon, Haolun Shu, and Lalita Krishna.

TIFF is delighted to announce that the 2023 NETPAC Jury has selected Jayant Digambar Somalkar’s A Match as this year’s NETPAC winner.

The 2023 NETPAC jury released the following statement: “First, the jury would like to express how impressed they were by the strong films in this category, which covered a range of social issues using diverse artistic styles. The jury gives an honourable mention to Mimang, where director Kim Taeyang created a lyrical tale through visuals of a changing city that perfectly captured the longing of its protagonists. The NETPAC award was instituted to promote Asian cinema and to bring international attention to independent and non-mainstream films focusing on the discovery of new talent. The jury commends the courage of this year’s winner, a first time feature director, for taking a risk and delivering a story that is enlightening and entertaining. The director worked with a cast of non-actors that not only resulted in a stellar performance, but achieved a level of authenticity needed to drive home the social message. An immersive portrayal of life in an Indian village, highlighting its oppressive patriarchal customs, the NETPAC award this year goes to A Match by Jayant Digambar Somalkar.”

FIPRESCI PRIZE

The 2023 FIPRESCI jury members include: Cem Altinsaray, Elijah Baron, Jindřiška Bláhová, Diego Faraone,
and Jenni Zylka.

The jury is delighted to announce Seagrass, dir. Meredith Hama-Brown, as this year’s FIPRESCI winner.

The 2023 FIPRESCI jury released the following statement: “A married couple in crisis seems willing to give what is usually the last resource to save its bond: couples therapy, while they’re having a vacation at the Pacific coast together with their two daughters. Their contact with other couples is an inevitable temptation and a fire test. Meanwhile, their daughters confront the world, their fears, puberty — and the ghosts of unresolved conflicts of their parents. This intimate, endearing, and wonderfully framed first feature film by young Canadian actor and director Meredith Hama-Brown skillfully deals with subjects like masculinity, family taboos, motherhood, and structural anti-Asian racism. Hama-Brown carefully stages her convincing actors, especially the young ones, and even gives life to a tender relationship between a little girl and a ball.
We are happy to honour the film Seagrass with the International Critics Prize (FIPRESCI Prize) at TIFF 2023.”

AMPLIFY VOICES AWARDS PRESENTED BY CANADA GOOSE

This year, Canada Goose will again present the Amplify Voices Awards to under-represented filmmakers in Canada. Feature films in Official Selection by Canadian BIPOC filmmakers are eligible for the Best Feature and Best First Feature Award. The Amplify Voices Award will also celebrate a Canadian BIPOC trailblazer, recognizing a producer who has made significant contributions to the Canadian film landscape. The three winners will receive a cash prize of $10,000 each, made possible by Canada Goose.

The three Amplify Voices Awards presented by Canada Goose winners are:

Amplify Voices Award – Best BIPOC Canadian Feature: Kanaval, dir. Henri Pardo
Jury’s statement: “There has never been a Canadian film that captures both magical realism and post-colonial trauma in such a beautiful, poetic, and convincing way. Seamless in the way the story has been weaved together, this film refuses to follow a linear storyline, understanding intimately how the past and future always exist in the present, and lifting centuries-old legacies into the cinema. Centered around the powerful and awe-inducing performance of newcomer Rayan Dieudonné, this film is an honest ode to the immigrant experience. The jury celebrates Kanaval and the singular cinematic talent of Henri Pardo.”

Amplify Voices Award for Best BIPOC Canadian First Feature Award: Tautuktavuk (What We See), dirs. Carol Kunnuk, Lucy Tulugarjuk
Jury’s statement: “Through powerful self-representation, this story honours rituals that have been and rituals that are made anew, reflecting a rare purity in its filmmaking approach. The makers of this film powerfully capture truth in its most unadorned form, turning the camera inward to both look at and listen to themselves and their community, placing trust in and honouring the authenticity of their voices. The jury celebrates the co-directors of Tautuktavuk, Carol Kunnuk and Lucy Tulugarjuk, for their work in powerfully navigating difficult and necessary conversations from a place of unapologetic ownership and unwavering communal care.”

The 2023 jurors for the Amplify Voices Awards presented by Canada Goose are V.T. Nayani, Nisha Pahuja, and Ricardo Acosta.

The Amplify Voices Award also celebrates a Canadian BIPOC Trailblazer, recognizing a producer who has made significant contributions to the Canadian film landscape.

The 2023 Amplify Voices Trailblazer Award was presented to Damon D’Oliveira, producer.

Damon is a veteran producer responsible for bringing to screen some of Canada’s most critically and commercially successful films and television (Brother, Rude, The Grizzlies, The Book of Negroes, and Wildhood). An early champion of diversity, equity, and inclusion both in front and behind the camera, Damon’s career has focused on producing content that centered underrepresented, racialized, and 2SLGBTQ+ voices. His latest film, Brother, directed by Clement Virgo, had its World Premiere at TIFF 2022 to strong critical acclaim and has been invited to a number of additional festivals including the Busan Film Festival, Sao Paulo Film Festival, and in Competition at the BFI London, Gothenburg, and Tromsø Film Festivals.

BEST CANADIAN FEATURE FILM AWARD

The 2023 Best Canadian Feature jury members include: V.T. Nayani, Susan Maggi, and Ricardo Acosta. TIFF is delighted to announce that the 2023 Jury has selected Solo, dir. Sophie Dupuis as this year’s Best Canadian Feature Film.

Jury’s statement: “Sophie Dupuis’s Solo is a specifically intimate and deeply affecting film, full of palpable care and honesty. Whatever your entry point to this film, there is a place for you as part of a larger story and conversation, which is more critical than ever. This coming-of-age narrative is ultimately a film about family, both blood and chosen, and the complications and beauties of both. And it is a story of love, in all of its iterations, of how it can both fail us and set us free.”

BEST CANADIAN FEATURE FILM AWARD HONORABLE MENTION: Kanaval, dir. Henri Pardo
Jury’s statement: “There has never been a Canadian film that captures both magical realism and post-colonial trauma through the singular lens of a young child, in such a beautiful, poetic, and convincing way. The jury is pleased to award an Honorable Mention to Henri Pardo’s Kanaval.”

CHANGEMAKER AWARD

The Changemaker Award is presented to a Festival film that explores issues relevant to young people and is focused on themes of social change and youth empowerment. The award embraces the power in young people seeing their communities represented on screen and celebrates the next generation of storytellers and changemakers in cinema. The winning film comes with a $10,000 CAD prize, and is selected by TIFF’s Next Wave Committee, a group of young film lovers who recognize cinema’s power to transform the world.

The 2023 jurors for the Changemaker Award are members of TIFF’s Next Wave Committee: Maggie Kane, Linc Guo, Serena Hao, Roni Harel Haber, Ray Wu, Naiya Forrester, Maya Al-Arami, Sara Rana, Daniel Leplae, Tara Sidhu, Tafadzwa Mangwiro, and Elizabeth Albrecht.

The 2023 Changemaker Award is presented to We Grown Now, dir. Minhal Baig.

Minhal Baig offered this statement: “Thank you so much to the Next Wave Committee in recognizing We Grown Now for the Changemaker Award. When I first began interviewing former Cabrini-Green residents years ago, I was deeply moved and surprised by the experiences they shared with me. They spoke both of the challenges and joys of life in a public housing project. It was essential in making the film that we embrace that reality and present the high rises through the lens of children who called it home. Though the high rises have long since been demolished, Cabrini-Green remains an indelible part of the history of Chicago and public housing in America, and I hope the film sparks meaningful cultural conversation. I am beyond honoured that the Next Wave Committee has recognized the film and the importance of its social issues.”

TIFF’s Next Wave Committee provided this statement: “We Grown Now offers a compelling depiction of family and friendship within the backdrop of Chicago’s public housing project, Cabrini-Green. Frequently shadowed by the stereotypes of drugs, violence, and crime, this film strives to break the mold. Minhal dedicated a significant amount of time to connect with former residents of the now-demolished homes to learn their stories. The result is a profound and significant story of boyhood innocence and hope, and the struggle two young friends face as they grapple with the possibility of saying goodbye to each other. We were able to connect with this film because we saw friends and family in it, the struggles they face everyday, and the parts of their lives we may never personally know. We believe in the self-discovery and power that comes from seeing your community represented in film. We know how dedicated Minhal is to tell stories that matter and that mean something to those they are about, and we hope that this award will aid her in her journey forward.”

PLATFORM AWARD

The Platform Award is an award of $20,000 CAD given to the best film in the programme, selected by an in-person international jury. This year’s jury members are: Barry Jenkins, Nadine Labaki, and Anthony Shim.

The 2023 Platform Award is awarded to: Dear Jassi, dir. Tarsem Singh Dhandwar.

The Platform Jury released this statement: “Dear Jassi was a unanimous choice for this year’s Platform Award for its honest and poignant portrayal of a subject matter that still affects large portions of individuals forced to live under the inhumanity of bitter caste systems throughout the globe. The film has the perfect blend of craft, purpose, and faith in its audience, creating a world that is both richly cinematic and steadfastly realistic. The young leads, Yugam Sood and Pavia Sidhu, are by turns breathtaking and, in performances that pull no punches, heartbreaking. Altogether an emphatic work by director Tarsem Singh Dhandwar and his many wonderful collaborators; a film that would be worthy of accolades in any section and which we enthusiastically welcome into the pantheon of winners in this Platform section.”

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

For the 47th year, the People’s Choice Awards distinguish the audience’s top title at the Festival as voted by the viewing public. All films in TIFF’s Official Selection were eligible.

The TIFF 2023 People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award winner is Dicks: The Musical dir. Larry Charles.
The first runner-up is Kill dir. Nikhil Nagesh Bhat.
The second runner-up is Hell of a Summer dirs. Finn Wolfhard, Billy Bryk.

2023 Best Canadian Feature Film Award,

EXCLUSIVE: Top entertainment lawyer Craig Emanuel is leaving the Century City-based firm Paul Hastings where he has been a partner and global chair of the Entertainment and Media division. After practicing as an attorney for more than 42 years, Emanuel is retiring from legal practice to focus on working as an advisor to his longtime client, Ryan Murphy, and his Ryan Murphy Productions.

Murphy has been a client of Emanuel’s for his entire Hollywood career; Emanuel signed the then-aspiring writer in 1996, before he had sold his first script, “Why Can’t I Be Audrey Hepburn?,” to Steven Spielberg, and before he launched a hugely successful TV career with his first series, the 1999 Popular.

Emanuel’s clients will remain at Paul Hastings and move forward with Erik Hyman, current co-chair of the firm’s Entertainment and Media division, who has worked with Emanuel for more than 25 years.

In addition to Murphy, Emanuel’s clients have included Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, writer Tony Gilroy, Mandalay Pictures and MSG Entertainment.

Murphy and Emanuel have developed a close relationship over the years.

“He was one of the very first, if not the first, people to believe I could be something,” Murphy said in a Variety profile of Emanuel earlier this year. “His belief in me and what I could accomplish has always been very moving and important.”

Emanuel was by Murphy’s side as his career took off with a string of hits, including Nip/Tuck, Glee, the American Horror Story franchise and its many offshoots as well as the popular 9-1-1 procedurals. Emanuel’s arrival as advisor comes ahead of a major change for Murphy who is expected to set up shop at Disney after the WGA strike in another mega deal for his Ryan Murphy Productions which had been based at Netflix and will continue to produce followups to recent hits Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher.

Aussie Emanuel started his Hollywood career at the then-newly open West Coast office of Nigel Sinclair’s Sinclair Tenenbaum. He went on to spend 20 years as partner at Loeb & Loeb. He then moved to Paul Hastings where he has been for the past five and a half years.

However, in the same Variety profile, Emanuel admitted that there was a moment about seven years ago when he pondered departing the legal arena “for something else.”

There have been a handful of other instances of a top showrunner and their longtime representative evolving their professional relationship, most notably top lit agent Bob Broder leaving ICM in 2012 to run the company of Chuck Lorre.

Drake and Halle Berry aren’t on good terms right now—that is, if rumors can be believed. The two appear to be feuding over the rapper’s decision to use an old photograph of the Catwoman star getting slimed at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards as the cover art for his new single, “Slime You Out.” Drake, for his part, hasn’t addressed the rumored beef yet. And it feels strange to witness the two develop bad blood in real time when Drake’s admiration for the actor has been so well-documented over the years. But Berry clearly isn’t happy about the situation and she’s not holding back about how she feels on Instagram.

Here’s how it all started.

Drake is a longtime fan of Berry.

Drake’s love for Berry previously went so deep that he name-checked the actor on the verse he wrote for “Versace (Remix),” the 2013 collaboration he did with Migos. “Take a famous girl out where there’s no paparazzi/I’m tryna give Halle Berry a baby and no one can stop me,” the Grammy winner can be heard rapping on the track.

In 2019, Drake took his public thirst a step further by wearing a leather jacket featuring an airbrushed portrait of Jinx Johnson, Berry’s character from the James Bond film Die Another Day.

Less than a month later, Berry repped the rapper by sporting a shirt emblazoned with the lyrics “Here for a good time not a long time” on Instagram. “Wayy up I feel blessed,” she captioned the post, alluding to Drake’s song “Blessings.”

Drake dropped the single on Friday.

On September 15, Drake dropped “Slime You Out,” the lead single from his forthcoming album, For All the Dogs. The track features SZA and both artists promoted the new project by sharing the cover art on their respective Instagram accounts. The cover art in question is an 11-year-old photo of Halle Berry getting slimed at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. The original image from the awards show is pictured below.

Christopher Polk/KCA2012/Getty Images

Berry responded with a post (and several comments) of her own.

Shortly after the song’s release, Berry shared an Instagram post with the words “Sometimes you have to be the bigger guy… even if you’re a woman!” printed on a solid pink background. Initially, Berry didn’t mention the rapper by name. But when a follower asked for her thoughts on the Drake situation in the comments, she didn’t hesitate to spill the tea.

Drake and Halle Berry aren't on good

A lot has been made of Prince Harry’s broken relationship with his father King Charles III and the rest of the royal family, particularly in the past year with his tell-all memoir Spare and his and his wife’s Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan. But the fact remains that Meghan Markle also remains estranged from her father and his side of the family. Thomas Markle has been begging his daughter for years to let him back in her life, and he recently issued another plea to let him meet his grandchildren before he dies, calling the Sussexes’ actions against him and the king “cruel.”

Just before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married  in 2018, Thomas Markle was accused of staging photos for paparazzi, causing a rift in their relationship that has yet to be repaired. Now he wants to “put the past behind” them, he told Good Morning Britain in what the anchors said was possibly his final interview, as he begged to be allowed to meet 4-year-old Archie and 2-year-old Lilibet. Thomas said:

I’m very upset … because this is a cruel thing to do to a grandparent. Not just me, to the king in England as well. Denied the right to see a grandchild.

As Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher reverse their decisions to return to their talk shows, Sherri Shepherd is gearing up for her return.

Sherri premiered its second season today, Monday September 18 and Shepherd addressed the writers and actors strikes on her first show back.

Shepherd pointed out the difference between her show and others: it has never employed any WGA writers.

“This summer you all may have seen your favorite actors and Hollywood stars have been on the picket lines with the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. There has been so much confusion about who can work and who can’t work. Well, I’m a SAG-AFTRA actress and I actually marched with some of my colleagues while in Los Angeles recently. That’s me with Viola Davis, Niecy Nash,” she said. “But here’s the thing, talk shows in general fall under a different union contract code, so we’re allowed to come back unless you’re a WGA show. The Sherri show is not a WGA show and we have never employed WGA writers, so us coming back to work isn’t crossing the picket line.”

She highlighted that she writes the jokes on her show and it is her “comedic take on the headlines”.

Shepherd empathized with those writers and actors striking. “My heart is breaking for all of the people that can’t work right now and I hope our industry can get this strike resolved soon,” she added. “I stand in solidarity with my union. One of the things that we’re fighting for is better residuals. … residuals during times that I was not working kept the lights on. My residual payments helped me care for Jeffrey when he was born at 25 weeks. So good residual payments are important to actors.”

The host also highlighted the issue of artificial intelligence. “The big sticking point is artificial intelligence – which could replace working actors from working. And it could replace writers. I’m here to tell you, AI can’t replace all of this sass.”

The show comes from Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury and is anchored by Fox Television Stations as well as stations belonging to Cox, Hearst, Sinclair, Nexstar and others. It took the place of The Wendy Williams Show and is filmed before a live studio audience in New York’s Chelsea Studios.

As Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher reverse

If there’s one artist who is having a great year, it’s Kelsea Ballerini. The pop-country crooner has been all over the news in 2023 and rightfully so.

Despite her messy divorce and being hit by a flying object at her concert, Ballerini is frankly living her dream. Given that she had previously been on tour with the Jonas Brothers, she’s already living my dream.

That’s why I’m so excited to spotlight one of her recent interviews and this time, it was with The Messenger. Ballerini talked openly in the interview and gave her insights and feelings about a lot of different topics.

If you’re a Kelsea Ballerini fan, then you’ll enjoy some of these tidbits shared in this interview so let’s break it down.

Kelsea Ballerini spills the tea in an interview with The Messenger!

Let’s start with the biggest tea first and that’s Kelsea Ballerini’s relationship with Chase Stokes amidst the fallout of her messy divorce. If you’re not caught up, Ballerini was married to Morgan Evans, and the two divorced in 2022 which resulted in songs written about each other and Kelsea’s wildly successful EP. Since then, she’s moved on with Chase Stokes and the two are adorable.

In her interview, she talked about sharing a video with her bestie before going out with Stokes for the first time. While she did get some backlash from people, the video was fun and shared the nerves of going out with someone new and it made sense. Her quote sums it all up: “I posted it because I feel like that was the next part of the story that I got to share on the re-release of the album.” I mean how can you be mad at that?!

Another recent development for Ballerini is that she’s now the first celebrity ambassador for the Original Donut Shop coffee. In her interview, she talked about how it makes her feel connected to her grandmother and how she was an early coffee drinker: “My parents didn’t let me drink coffee yet, [but] my grandma did. She would make me a cup of coffee…But it felt so special because it was this memory that I had with her, and it was our little thing.” I feel like all of us can relate to that as we usually have a special memory associated with someone.

That’s just a look at part one of the two-part interview the Messenger did with Kelsea Ballerini as she tackled something very important in the second part. She talked about people throwing objects at performers. I’m sure all of us recall when she was hit with a bracelet recently while Bebe Rexha was hit with a cell phone. Most recently, Nick Jonas was hit by a bracelet while performing with his brothers on The Tour.

Frankly, it’s getting out of control and Ballerini spoke about that: “I think either the fan wants the artist’s attention or there’s a trend happening that’s getting a lot of pickup and [going viral] and a person, I wouldn’t say a fan, a person that’s in the crowd wants that. Either way, not safe.” All in all, I have to agree with KB as I feel like there is nothing fun or smart about doing this yet it keeps happening.

Either way, I enjoy Kelsea Ballerini and I’m happy I was able to spotlight this interview because she talked very openly and candidly. She seems like such a genuine person and I’d love to sit down and have a cup of coffee with her. I’d like to thank The Messenger for reaching out to me and putting this on my radar

What do you think of this two-part interview with Kelsea Ballerini? Were you surprised by anything you learned? Let us know in the comments!

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! Ezra is a kid with autism, and his parents, Max and Jenna (played by real-life couple Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne), struggle to raise him separately since they have very different ideas about what Ezra needs. Jenna is in a new relationship, but Max is a struggling comedian who now lives with his father, Stan (Robert De Niro). When Ezra gets expelled from school, the couple can’t agree about what to do. Max is influenced by his father, Stan, who is very old-school and doesn’t believe in catering to Ezra’s needs by putting him in a special school and giving him medication. When Max gets a big break — being booked on Jimmy Kimmel Live! — he continues his string of bad decisions by deciding to kidnap Ezra and take him on a cross-country road trip to the taping so that Ezra won’t have to be medicated.

Even before I saw Ezra, I took it as a good indication that the film had a pretty good script since it was able to attract a star-studded cast, including Robert De Niro, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson, and Whoopi Goldberg.  My assumption was correct — the script by Tony Spiridakis about parents struggling to raise a kid with autism, based partly on his real-life experiences, is outstanding. It is a comedy with plenty of drama to raise the stakes. Much of the humor derives from outrageous situations, yet they are grounded in believable decisions a slightly misguided parent would make. Each major character feels fully realized and is nuanced enough that there aren’t any clear heroes or villains — just a bunch of people doing their best in a complicated world.

“…deciding to kidnap Ezra and take him on a cross-country road trip…”

But a script is one thing, and execution is another. I’m happy to say that Ezra delivers on all fronts — a top-tier script, outstanding direction by Tony Goldwyn, and a great cast led by a standout performance from William Fitzgerald, who plays Ezra. Spiridakis had been giving his friend actor/director Tony Goldwyn drafts of it for years, but when Goldwyn saw the latest version, he knew he had to direct it. If you’ve seen Oppenheimer, Tony Goldwyn plays Gordon Gray, the politician running the hearing on revoking Oppenheimer’s security clearance. He’s been directing for some time, mostly TV, but based on the strength of Ezra, I have a feeling his stock as a director is about to rise in Hollywood.

Perhaps the greatest joy of Ezra is the stellar performance of William Fitzgerald as the titular kid. He is on the autism spectrum himself, and he absolutely nails a believable performance as a kid who can infuriate a parent in one second and melt their heart in another. It takes a lot to go toe to toe with Robert De Niro, but Fitzgerald makes it look like he’s been acting for years. The kid also has great comedic timing. He’s great at the deadpan comeback, and he even gets to tell some jokes of his own. Even with everything else going for it, this film either fails or succeeds based on the title character’s performance, and William Fitzgerald knocked it out of the park. As with any child acting performance, director Tony Goldwyn also deserves a share of the credit for handling the role with sensitivity and getting exactly what was needed.

Bobby Cannavale is also outstanding as Ezra’s dad, Max. He’s believable as a stand-up comedian and as a father who is his own worst enemy. His decisions are often questionable, but Cannavale infuses the character with such passion that we believe they are at least coming from his heart. The scenes between Cannavale and Rainn Wilson, who plays a friend whose house they hide out at, are particularly funny and charming. And the scenes between Cannavale and Vera Farmiga, who plays another old friend, are equally captivating, showing a genuine warmth. There’s a depth to the character of Max that could easily have been missed in a film without a script and lead actor of this caliber.

Ezra had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and it received two standing ovations, one at the end of the film and another when William Fitzgerald, who played Ezra, was introduced. It has already generated a lot of buzz, so I’m sure there will be a bidding war between distributors.

Ezra screened at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
