DISTRIBUTION

BFI Distribution has acquired Joanna Hogg’s gothic ghost story “The Eternal Daughter,” starring Tilda Swinton in a dual role, for theatrical release in the U.K. and Ireland and will release in cinemas this fall. In the film, an artist and her elderly mother confront long-buried secrets when they return to a former family home, now a hotel haunted by its mysterious past.

The film had its world premiere at Venice in 2022 and also screened at the London and Toronto festivals. Alongside its wider distribution, it will also screen at London’s BFI Southbank as part of a complete Hogg retrospective season, which will run alongside a program of films that have influenced her work.  The film is the BFI’s second acquisition from A24, following “God’s Creatures” earlier this year.

Executive produced by Martin Scorsese and Rose Garnett and coproduced by Eimhear McMahon, the film is produced by Hogg alongside Ed Guiney, Emma Norton and Andrew Lowe. It is an Element Pictures production with the support of A24, BBC Film, JWH Films and Sikelia Productions.

APPOINTMENTS

ITV Studios label MultiStory Media has promoted Simone Haywood to creative director, MultiStory London, reporting into chief creative officer Ana de Moraes. Haywood has delivered some of the label’s biggest new programs, including “Scared of the Dark” for Channel 4, BBC Three’s “Project Icon” (coproduced with ITV America) and “Big Flower Fight” for Netflix, as well as overseeing “Come Dine With Me” for Channel 4. Haywood will build on the label’s output alongside Ceri Aston, creative director, MultiStory North.

Jon Cahn, whose credits include “SAS: Who Dares Wins” and “Married at First Sight,” is joining the entertainment team as executive producer. Zinia Scroggs, who previously series produced BBC Three’s “Glow Up,” is joining as series editor. Both executives will report into Haywood.

BRAND VALUATION

The latest Indian celebrity brand valuation study from global consulting firm Kroll has seen Bollywood star Ranveer Singh leapfrog cricket icon Virat Kohli as the most valued brand in the country with a brand value of $181.7 million, $23.4 million higher than 2021. After four years at the top, Kohli now occupies the second position with a brand value of $176.9 million, while Bollywood star Akshay Kumar retained the third position with a brand value of $153.6 million. Fellow Bollywood stars Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone are fourth position and fifth respectively with $102.9 million and $82.9 million.

Aviral Jain, managing director, valuation advisory services, Kroll, told Variety: “Ranveer Singh’s meteoric rise in brand valuation reflects his ability to constantly reinvent himself and stay relevant in a highly competitive industry. He has a diverse and extensive endorsement portfolio, ranging from sportswear to beauty brands, and his association with high-profile events such as the FIFA World Cup 2022 has further strengthened his global appeal. His creative energy and unique style have resonated with audiences, making him a powerful force in the celebrity brand world. We look forward to seeing how brand Ranveer continues to evolve in the future.”

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Gotham Knights season 1, episode 2, “Scene of the Crime.”The origin of Batman has been changed in a big way in Gotham Knights. The new superhero series has deviated from the comic book DC Universe in some major ways, starting with the series opening with the death of Batman and most of the usual supporting cast not existing on this particular Earth. The latest change goes one step further, tying Batman’s life and death to one of his most infamous enemies.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Batman has perhaps the most famous and most frequently replicated origin story of any superhero. The death of Bruce Wayne’s parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, at the hands of a random mugger has been recreated in multiple films and television series. As a result, there are few that are aware of Batman as a character yet ignorant of how Bruce Wayne was inspired to wage war on crime. However, Gotham Knights challenges the idea that the Waynes died as the result of a botched robbery, suggesting a conspiracy that arranged for Thomas and Martha Wayne to be assassinated.

How Gotham Knights’ Batman Origin Is Different

The action of Gotham Knights episode 2, “Scene of the Crime,” sees Bruce Wayne’s adopted son Turner Hayes breaking into his father’s office at Wayne Tower with the assistance of the Robin of this Earth, Carrie Kelley. They hoped to find some clue as to who killed Batman among his most recent journals and case studies, which Carrie knew he kept locked in a hidden vault. They were surprised to discover that Bruce had apparently been rereading his first journal, where he discussed his investigation into his parents’ murder at the hands of a random robber named Joe Chill and how Chill was a hired gun working for The Court of Owls.

The young Batman believed that his parent’s death was not the result of a random crime, writing, “Joe Chill may have pulled the trigger, but he didn’t orchestrate the murder. The Court of Owls did.” This, coupled with Bruce Wayne being discovered clutching a coin with the Court of Owl’s emblem, suggested that he had begun exploring the connection between the death of his parents and the Court of Owls right before his death. However, the journal did not reveal any proof of Batman’s theory and concluded with the note that “despite my efforts, I found no evidence they ever existed.”

Gotham Knights’ Batman Origin Change Has Precedent In The Comics

The Court of Owls surrounding Batman.

The idea that the Waynes’ deaths were arranged by the Court of Owls harkens back to their introduction in the Batman comics by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, where a young Bruce Wayne researched rumors of the secret society, hoping to find a connection. He never found any proof in the core DC Universe reality of Earth-0. However, the Batman/Spawn crossover miniseries, which is believed to be set on another Earth, confirmed the Court of Owls were behind the deaths of Batman’s parents.

The conceit that the Waynes’ murder at Joe Chill’s hands was no random mugging was also explored in other stories. The idea that Joe Chill was a hitman was also utilized in the 2016 Batman: The Telltale Series video game. By contrast, the 1995 Batman novel The Ultimate Evil suggested that the Waynes were killed because of sociologist Martha Wayne’s investigation into a human trafficking syndicate. In the case of Gotham Knights, it remains to be seen if the Court of Owls is truly responsible for the deaths of Bruce Wayne and his parents or if they are just taking advantage of the chaos their deaths brought to Gotham City.

Gotham Knights airs Tuesdays on The CW.

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Gotham

A previously cancelled Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED game is no longer cancelled and is actually releasing next week on March 23. If this sequence of events sounds odd, it’s because it is. It’s not often a game is cancelled and then resurrected. What’s even less common is for a game/port to release roughly four years after being cancelled. That’s a meaty stretch of time, but it’s coming to an end.

The game in question is called Song of Memories, which is currently only available on PS4 and PC. It debuted back in 2017, via the PS4, but only in Japan. Then in 2018 it got a worldwide release, but only via PC. And then in 2019, it came west, via the PS4, and the plan was for this release to be accompanied by a debut on Nintendo Switch. However, a month before its release, the Switch version was canned over “development complications.” And this was the end of the timeline for the game, or so fans thought. Today, it was announced that the Switch version is back on and coming March 23. It will cost $28.99 when it releases and be available only via the Nintendo eShop.

“A story of love and crisis. A dramatic visual novel where your choices determine the ending of the story. In a grand and mysterious world woven together by beautiful graphics and an emotional story, you become the protagonist and forge your own destiny,” reads an official blurb about the game.”

The game’s description continues, going into story details: “The protagonist, who is unaware of the discovery of an unknown virus in the world, enjoys a happy school life with six beautiful girls. Little did they know that it would become a time that would never return… In the first half of the story, the common route is filled with event scenes that can be called the epitome of gal games! They spend their time enjoying events like the pool event and date event. There are more than 100 common events alone!”

Despite having been revealed to privately hate Donald Trump “passionately,” Tucker Carlson remains, publicly, one of Trump’s biggest media allies. So it comes as no surprise that the star of Fox News’ primetime lineup is very, very opposed to the idea of Donald Trump being arrested.

But on Tuesday Carlson had a highly idiosyncratic hope for how Trump might be saved from legal accountability: Help from President Joe Biden.

Now as a reminder, on Saturday, as part of a larger ALL CAPS rant on his Twitter clone, Truth Social, about various things that make him angry, Trump claimed that we would likely be arrested on Tuesday (today). Supposedly as part of the New York investigation into the hush money payments he made to former porn actress Stormy Daniels, using campaign funds.

Now you may have noticed Trump wasn’t arrested. The Manhattan District Attorney has made no public statement — though reports suggest Trump won’t actually be arraigned until next week (if at all).

Nevertheless, Carlson is very, very concerned about the possibility Trump could be arrested, and that brings us to his weird idea that Joe Biden might save him. Here’s what he said on Tuesday’s episode of “Tucker Carlson Tonight”:

“If this happens” — meaning, Trump’s arrest — “America will never be the same. You’ve gotta hope that for the sake of the country, the Biden White House, which will be running against Trump, will put the country above partisanship and stop this. That Merrick Garland at DOJ will issue a very public statement saying that this is wrong which it is. And therefore preserve for our grandchildren our justice system. As a fact this doesn’t seem to be happening.”

Weird that Carlson would want Joe Biden to bail Trump out of the legal trouble Trump brought on himself by using campaign funds to pay his former mistress hush money — since Trump incited the deadly Jan. 6 riot in an attempt to prevent Joe Biden from being certified as president. But hey, it’s his show, he can apparently say whatever he wants. Which is probably why the New York Times once described “Tucker Carlson Tonight” as “what may be the most racist show in the history of cable news.”

“Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong recently announced that the fourth season of HBO’s zeitgeisty drama will be its last. It’s appropriate, then, that the new season — which starts airing Sunday, March 26 — focuses like never before on the title topic: Who will succeed Brian Cox’s monstrous patriarch Logan Roy as head of the Waystar/Royco media empire?

In the first quartet of episodes provided to reviewers, a tone of serious business emerges over the sometimes goofy, ever-morphing equations of loyalty, favoritism and backstabbing that have been so wickedly entertaining since the drama series’ 2018 premiere. Though that formula hadn’t run out of morality melting steam, one did wonder how many more combinations could be made from it before the template got tiresome.

A more serious sense of finality does the trick. Along with, maybe, hints of decency on the parts of some Roys. Which is not to say Logan has dropped his “F— everything, all the time” attitude or speech patterns. Or that his children, especially addled rebel Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and provocative perv Roman (Kieran Culkin), aren’t still taking the toilet mouths they inherited to hilariously lacerating extents. Now far more their own pop culture figures than the Murdoch-lites they were initially conceived as, the Roys all seem a bit more reflective than we thought they could be, perhaps as a byproduct of all the crap they’ve put themselves and each other through.

Of course, any newfound sincerity could be fake, as has happened many times in the past. But anything that makes Strong’s extreme method acting, so good for portraying Ken’s delusional ditziness for three seasons, settle into a compelling naturalism is welcome, whether the character’s being honest or not. Cox may still consider Strong’s acting style “f—ing annoying,” but Kendall isn’t as irritating as he used to be.

Though she’s still the closest thing to this ice-blooded show’s heart, Siobhan (Sarah Snook) hurls penetrating verbal darts as well as her brothers. Especially at her husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) — when, that is, she’s not in palpable despair over the corporate climbing weasel’s latest betrayal. With her volatile immediacy, Snook remains the series’ most versatile actor.

At the end of last season, Tom warned Logan about his childrens’ scheme to block Waystar’s sale to Alexander Skarsgård’s Swedish tech mogul Lukas Matsson. True to his nature, Logan made moves, cutting the siblings out of the company altogether. Season 4 opens with Kendall, Roman and Shiv courting investors for a rival media startup called The Hundred, which Ken describes as “Substack meets MasterClass meets The Economist meets The New Yorker” with typical misapplied grandiosity.

Despite such silliness, along with ongoing internecine sniping and distrust, the threesome acts with newfound purpose and even a Roy variant of respect toward each other. Waystar’s sale to Matsson’s GoJo is 48 hours away and the Kids (or as Logan now calls them, the Rats) have signed their resignation forms. There’s a businesslike sobriety, if not great financial judgment, to the Kids’ efforts to get back at Dad while they all wait to get their share of GoJo money.

A risky gambit puts the sheer mastery of both acting ensemble and behind-the-lens team on full, extended display. In an early episode, Strong, Snook and Culkin deliver their deepest, most empathetic performances of the entire series. Complex, often contradictory feelings lead to grace notes and behaviors we never believed these characters were capable of displaying, while each remains true to their fundamental natures.

There are also pragmatic but nonetheless humanizing portrayals from the Waystar executive players: Peter Friedman (vice-chairman Frank Vernon), J. Smith-Cameron (general counsel Gerri Kellman, who has no time for Roman’s special needs so far), David Rasche (CFO Karl Muller) Dagmara Domińczyk and Fisher Stevens (P.R. pros Karolina Novotney and Hugo Baker).

It all settles into a superb array of the show’s signature strengths: Machiavellian plotting, comic rationalizing and withering put-downs. The whole gang is at their calculating best, with a survivalist urgency to the business and emotional stakes at hand.

The season could continue in several directions. If somehow Logan has engineered his greatest power play of all, can Armstrong and company pull it off without the show’s entire audience feeling screwed over? That might at least approximate something a Roy would do, but now that the younger ones have revealed some tenderness and maturity, would it be more satisfying to make those qualities the source of anyone’s final triumph or downfall? Will Matsson turn out to be more like Elon Musk or Peter Thiel?
As always, one of the few things we can be certain about regarding “Succession” is we’ll be watching anxiously until the bitter end.

“Succession” Season 4 premieres Sunday, March 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT on HBO Max.

Jeff Garlin’s abrupt exit from The Goldbergs may have come as a surprise to us — but not to one of his former co-stars.

Wendi McLendon-Covey, who stars on the ABC sitcom as mom Beverly, now says of Garlin’s departure: “That was a long time coming.” She addressed the controversy in a Sirius XM interview with Andy Cohen on Tuesday, adding that when Garlin did leave the show, “it was like, ‘OK, OK, someone’s finally listening to us.’”

McLendon-Covey later nodded and agreed when Cohen speculated that Garlin’s exit was a culmination of many complaints against him, but she then asked if they could not talk about it any further, noting that she’s “exhausted by that topic and the PTSD of it all… I just feel like the less people know about that, the better. No one benefits from knowing anything.”

Garlin, who played Beverly’s husband Murray Goldberg, left the show in December 2021 following a human resources investigation stemming from several complaints about the comedian’s on-set behavior. In subsequent Season 9 episodes, pre-recorded dialogue and a body double were employed for Murray, with Garlin’s face superimposed in post-production. In September’s Season 10 premiere, it was revealed that Murray had passed away, although it was not specified how he had died.

First premiering back in 2013, The Goldbergs will wrap up its run with a series finale on Wednesday, May 3. Loosely based on the life of creator Adam F. Goldberg, the series currently stars McLendon-Covey (as Beverly), Sean Giambrone (as Adam), Troy Gentile (as Barry), Hayley Orrantia (as Erica) and Sam Lerner (as Erica’s husband Geoff).

Dr. Eric Burnett, a physician who was on the frontlines of the pandemic in New York City, describes the impact Dr. Anthony Fauci has had on him throughout his medical career and the importance of combating COVID-19 misinformation.

As an internist, diagnosing conditions can be a process with staggeringly differential possibilities, based on a combination of workups, examinations and patient interviews. For many of us, a worn-out copy of “Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine” is always on hand.  Harrison’s is sort of the Bible for internists, a staple on any doctor’s bookshelf. For years, I scribbled my diagnostic notes while looking at a certain name on the book’s cover: FAUCI.

One evening as an attending physician, my admissions were all patients in respiratory distress, diagnosed with viral pneumonia from the novel respiratory virus SARS-CoV-2. My aged copy of Harrison’s had no treatment algorithm for this new disease, COVID-19. It was daunting and unsettling to be on the frontlines of a pandemic, battling a new disease with little information. As the sun rose over Washington Heights, I signed out my patients to the oncoming day team and returned home, sat down and turned on the TV before trying to fall asleep. After an emotionally and physically draining shift, I was comforted to see a familiar name flash on the TV as I watched the news. Dr. Fauci would be leading the president’s coronavirus task force.

Of course, it came as no surprise to me that Dr. Fauci would help lead this country through the worst pandemic we’ve seen in the last 100 years. He’s worked through several presidential administrations, both Republican and Democrat, aided with other disease outbreaks such as HIV/AIDS and Ebola, not to mention was one of the co-authors of a book that had been my companion throughout medical school and residency. He is a pillar in the medical community.

The spring of 2020 in New York City was a dark and frightening time; it was easy to feel adrift as a physician treating a new disease in the epicenter of a global pandemic. My entire life and clinical practice were turned upside down in an instant. The hospital wards were filling up with critically ill patients. I didn’t know when or if the dam was going to break, I didn’t know when the deluge would subside. There were so many unknown factors and the ground was shifting beneath my feet on a near-constant basis, but Dr. Fauci served as an anchor in that sea of uncertainty, grounding me at a time when there was so much I didn’t know. His level-headed response amidst a calamitous and politically polarized environment was inspiring and encouraged me to keep going.

10 photos exploring the many facets of Dr. Anthony Fauci

The initial wave of the pandemic ultimately did subside in New York City. The volume of patients began to decrease and I was afforded some much-needed breathing room, time to reflect on just how impactful the previous months had been on me as a person and as a physician. The calm was short-lived, however, as I quickly began to notice an alarming rise in the amount of disinformation surrounding the pandemic on social media. Scrolling through Twitter and TikTok, I saw inaccurate posts stating:

“Masks do nothing to reduce the spread of COVID, there’s no purpose in wearing them.”
“COVID is a Chinese hoax to make the president look bad!”
“Doctors are lying about COVID deaths, it’s nothing more than the flu!”
“Hospitals are intentionally putting patients on ventilators to make more money and to make the pandemic look worse than it is.”

Hearing these outright falsehoods was obviously distressing having just lived through one of the most difficult experiences in my medical career. I felt galvanized to take to social media and use my experience as a physician on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic to dispel these inaccurate and potentially harmful talking points. I quickly realized that the polarized nature of the pandemic made dispelling misinformation a precarious effort. I was doxed and attacked online, called a liar, a shill and a murderer. I learned that speaking up for public health efforts could garner some very harsh responses from certain people.

While watching the evening news, I witnessed similar attacks directed towards members of the coronavirus task force, especially Dr. Fauci. Attacks came from all angles, so much so that he needed to have a security detail for both him and his family. I recall watching an interview with Dr. Fauci discussing the harassment and attacks, and what stuck with me was that he remained confident in his convictions and his dedication to public health. His stoic nature, even in the face of threats against his physical safety, inspired me to continue combating disinformation, for it was the right thing to do.

Dr. Fauci has been a constant presence in the medical community for the last several decades. Whether it was through his assistance with epidemics and novel disease outbreaks, providing the country with calm and level headed response in a time of incredible uncertainty, or helping a busy internal medicine resident on his night float rotation work through differential diagnoses, he was always there. We are still fighting our way out of this pandemic, but I know with the help of people like Dr. Fauci, we will come out stronger and more resolved on the other side.

The sports-focused streaming virtual multichannel video provider(vMVPD) FuboTV is rebranding itself.

The company will now be called Fubo (no more “TV”), and is launching a new marketing and branding effort to help it grow market share in an increasingly competitive environment.

The company will launch the new campaign, with the tagline “If Sports Fans Built a Streaming Service,” this week, with the new corporate brand replacing its existing assets over the coming months. NBA star Kevin Garnett and NFL veteran Mark Sanchez have been tapped to lead the campaign.

“FuboTV has grown in size and scope, with multiple brands under our global umbrella, since we launched our core cable TV replacement product in 2015,” said David Gandler, co-founder and CEO of Fubo, in a statement. “Alongside our continued growth, our consumers have affectionately shortened our name to Fubo and we feel that name represents the premium media brand we are today. We’re building on this momentum with an updated visual identity and new ad campaign, created in partnership with Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, to continue to drive profitable growth as we head into baseball season.”

The new campaign is being produced by Maximum Effort, the production and marketing company founded by actor and producer Ryan Reynolds.

Maximum Effort last year inked a first-look unscripted development deal with Fubo that will see the company producing content and launching a “Maximum Effort Network” for the streaming service. Maximum Effort also received equity in the company as part of the deal. According to a Fubo securities filing, Maximum Effort received 2 million shares of Fubo stock in connection to the deal, and will receive $10 million worth of shares at each of the first and second anniversaries of the deal.

“The reason Maximum Effort believes in Fubo is it’s the one product that captures the best of cable and the best of streaming, while having the very meaningful differentiator of live sports,” added Reynolds. “While cable fights cord-cutters and streaming services fight the cash content war, Fubo is building an experience and suite of services that can win.”

Fubo added 323,000 net subscribers in 2022, more than any traditional cable provider. It now has a total of 1.44 million subs. However, it is also operating in a competitive marketplace, with Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV battling for streaming multichannel subs. Hulu with Live TV has 4.5 million subscribers, while YouTube TV has more than 5 million.

Reynolds, meanwhile, has proven himself adept at helping to brand companies in a variety of industries. His Aviation Gin brand sold to Diageo for more than $600 million in 2020, and last week Mint Mobile, the wireless company for which he was a minority owner, sold to T-Mobile for more than $1.4 billion.

“Renfield” has not yet debuted but star Nicolas Cage is already thinking about the chance to revisit it one day. After receiving the Variety Legend & Groundbreaker Award at Miami Film Festival earlier this month, the actor opened up about how he’d like to explore the bloodsucker even deeper.

“This is the perfect amount of time for Dracula in this movie. But I wouldn’t mind exploring how did Dracula become Dracula? How did you become that guy? I want to take the time to portray that, to see how he got there,” Cage explained during the panel when asked about a role he’d like to revisit. “To me, Dracula was always [about] love and exile. He’s unrequited love, and ultimately, if you don’t get love back, you’re gonna go bad. I want to look at that.”

“Renfield,” directed by Chris McKay, is an “entirely different version” of Dracula. Led by Nicolas Hoult, Cage’s supporting character is a narcissistic boss.

“They’re selling it like the boss from hell. This is about a toxic relationship between Renfield and Dracula. Usually when you see Renfield in the movies, he’s portrayed in a sort of a grotesque manner. Nick is a very charming, handsome, elegant, funny and witty actor. So this is a unique take,” Cage explained.

Oscar-nominated Christian Tinsley worked as the makeup artist on the film, and is someone Cage can’t help but extend great gratitude to.

“I had the ceramic teeth in my mouth the whole time. I was trying to speak with some some level of eloquence when it’s hard to form any words at all, but I had a lot of help — a great costume department, great makeup artists. We all sort of powwowed and coalesced this character together,” he said. “I looked at some what’s been done before and done well and sort of cherry picked what I liked about the Dracula’s that have worked. Then, I tried to break through that and find something new to do with what I learned.”

“Renfield” has its world premiere on March 30 at the Overlook Film Festival before being released in theaters April 14.

Whenever the Iranian regime feels threatened by public protest its reflex is to go after two groups: demonstrators, most assuredly, but also artists – especially filmmakers.

When protests surged in six provinces in May last year over rising food prices, the government promptly banged on the doors of two documentary filmmakers, Mina Keshavarz and Firouzeh Khosrovani, and arrested them. For good measure, law enforcement agents reportedly harassed numerous other filmmakers, seizing their communications equipment.

The May unrest appears mild compared to the uproar triggered in September 2022 by the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman arrested for allegedly not wearing her hijab in accordance with law. Security forces have attacked and killed an unknown number of demonstrators in the course of months of protests. The government also responded with an immediate clamp down on leading figures in Iranian cinema, detaining or imprisoning Jafar Panahi, Mohammad Rasulof, and Mostafa al-Ahmad. In January, 81-year-old director Masoud Kimiai reportedly was prevented from traveling from Iran to the Rotterdam Film Festival to show his latest work.

“Iranian cinema has had always a great voice and was always transporting to a wider audience,” noted Iranian-born film producer and curator Afsun Moshiry during a conversation with Deadline at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen. “This is, of course, why this wants to be controlled by a regime that wants actually to be controlling everything.” She says Iranian authorities fret over “how they are represented…  what kind of critique of society is within the film.”

Moshiry came to CPH:DOX with the legendary German filmmaker Wim Wenders to unveil a program of six nonfiction shorts made by Iranian directors, some based in Iran and others working in exile. The Wim Wenders Foundation sponsored the project, titled A Sense of Place. All six of the films resulted from a close collaboration between Wim Wenders, filmmaker Hella Wenders (Wim Wenders’ niece) and the six Iranian directors: Mohammadreza Farzad (Hollow), Shirin Barghnavard (Density of Emptiness), Azin Faizabadi (Shadowless – In Transit), Pooya Abassian (Mal Tourné), Afsaneh Salari (Great Are the Eyes of a Dead Father), and Mina Keshavarz (Phobos).

Keshavarz, as noted above, was among the directors arrested last year. Wenders expounded on why cinema is perceived as such a threat by an authoritarian regime like Iran’s.

“The idea of change is immanent to filmmaking, I think, and to movies,” Wenders told Deadline. “Only utterly commercial films present a world that should stay the way it is. Only the most commercial filmmaking is not promoting the idea of change. Any independent filmmaking… as such, is promoting change. And that of course is dangerous for any regime that doesn’t really like change.” He noted that such independent filmmaking “doesn’t have to be explicitly political; actually it’s better if it doesn’t, because then the idea of change works much better.”

Wenders cited an example from his own career, the Oscar-nominated Buena Vista Social Club, the 1999 documentary about aging musicians in Cuba.

“They had only one demand to me,” Wenders said of the musicians, “that they wouldn’t have to make a political statement, because they made it clear to me they lived there [in Cuba], they had chosen to live there, they wanted to die there. So many [other] musicians had gone to Mexico, Spain, Florida, whatever. And these guys were there. And they said… ‘We’d like to do everything for this movie, but it would be good for us if you don’t get our position into danger.’ So, we just didn’t do that. The film still promotes a lot of ideas about change and it gives an image of a society and you don’t really have to have people issue a call to arms in order to be a political film.”

Wenders said that’s true of some of the six films chosen for A Sense of Place.

“I think some of the films of our series — like Shirin [Barghnavard’s] film about the density of places, it’s a very political film,” he observed. “It’s a very political film, but probably under the radar of the danger zones that the regime sees.”

Moshiry, the curator, grew up mostly in Germany but has spent considerable time in Iran, as recently as 2020. She described the current situation in Iran, amidst the crackdown on protests, as “quite hard. And we hope that we are actually in the middle of a revolution that will bring change, bring freedom for women, for children, for men. And I think that now, right now, it’s very emotional for us. It’s like very hard to also see the images from outside.”

She added she feels solidarity with the whole of the Iranian people. “We try to support everyone in the country. And we want also to do our utmost for the filmmakers and artists. They really need much support these days, in every sense.”

A Sense of Place drew upon the talents of many creatives based in Iran, Moshiry said, with the desire of helping as many people in the film industry as possible.

“We have an Iranian producer… The DoPs and the editors were all Iranians. We did, as much as the filmmakers wished, their post productions with their trusted people in Iran,” she said. “We did the graphic design, the ‘corporate identity’ as you would say, of the project in Iran… We did the website in both languages to also incorporate the Iranian audience into the project. So, these were little things that we thought about.”

Moshiry continued, “We actually now hope that maybe it’ll not take so much time when we can also go with Wim and Hella back to Iran and, hopefully, start a new era.”

Batman: Caped Crusader is getting a 2 season order at Amazon! HBO Max passed on the animated show from J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves and Bruce Timm. It was feared dead in the water, but now Amazon has stepped up to the plate and has ordered 2 seasons! This is great news for fans of Batman The Animated Series. Bruce Timm was the mind behind the cult hit show. It may not be a direct sequel, but it can be seen as a spiritual successor. Add to that mix J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, its hard to believe HBO would pass and no secret why Amazon would jump at the chance to showcase the show on their platform.

With the rash of  of shows be canceled and pulled by Warner Bros, it’s nothing short of a miracle. This is a glimmer of good news coming from Warner Bros in the pre- James Gunn DC landscape. With two seasons guaranteed, the show will have time to develop characters and dig into story telling. That should improve the chances of further seasons.

Obviously we don’t have a release date, but at least this project will see the light of day. These days that is a definite plus, we just hope it doesn’t take to long to get made and that it is worth the wait and drama.

Caped Crusader has been announced for a while and was mentioned during Fan Dome so the buzz has been there for a while. Also of note is that famed comics scribe Ed Brubaker is also Executive producing. The level of talent involved in this show has a lot of us here at Dccomicsnews.com excited. Will it live up to the hype? Right now I’d say the chances are pretty good that it will! Stay tuned!

Riot officers were dispatched to the violet carpet yesterday in Lille as nationwide protests against pension reforms hit Series Mania.

The protestors fighting against President Emmanuel Macron’s plans for reform were pushed back and order soon restored. However, unrest was seen by witnesses elsewhere in the historic city throughout the evening.

Deadline heard sirens and saw multiple police vans and ambulances heading to incidents and we’ve seen pictures on delegates’ phones of street fires and riot police clashing with protestors.

By late evening, the roads were quiet again as the protests died down.

Civil unrest has sparked across France over plans to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 and Lille was unable to escape. The reforms were passed without a vote in parliament, igniting protests in cities such as Paris, Marseille and Lyon.

A general strike has been planned for Thursday (March 23), leaving many Series Mania delegates nervously looking at Thursday train timetables as the Forum comes to a close. Those travelling to Paris or other cities for flights could be impacted, according to national railway SNCF.

Eurostar is reporting several trains have been cancelled and more information can be found on its website. The nationwide action will “involve disruption across multiple sectors, including national rail services and it will have an impact on the availability of some of our crew,” according to the intra-national railway line.

Rubbish has also been piling up as refuse collectors join the strikes.

However, the unexpected unrest hasn’t dampened Series Mania delegates’ spirits, with the annual Federation Studios party well attended and other events busy and buzzy. Many stars such as Desperate Housewives actress Marcia Cross were in town, as the Forum got underway.

Meanwhile, the winner of the Co-Pro Pitching Session was unveiled.

Six-part Ukraine/Poland war thriller Unspoken was named the recipient of a €50,000 ($54,000) check after being selected by a jury led by President Caroline Hollick, the Head of Drama at UK network Channel 4.

Unspoken comes from Dmytro Sukhanovfrom Toy Cinema and Natalia Libet from 2Brave Productions in Ukraine and Anna Rożalska from Match&Spark in Poland. Zhanna Ozirna and Filip Syczyński are there writers.

Also on the jury were Michele Zatta, Commissioning Editor for Italy’s RAI; Françoise Guyonnet, Executive Managing Director TV Series at StudioCanal; Jarmo Lampela, Head of Drama at Finland’s YLE; and Lindsey Martin, the UK-based VP, Development and Co-Productions at CBS Studios International

“The winning project united the judges unanimously with the raw, emotional intensity of the storytelling. The powerful, relatable tale of a father prepared to go to any lengths to save his family was a bold and original take on the most urgent subject matter of our time,” said Hollick.

Series Mania began on Match 17 and runs until March 24.

Movies from the U.S., India, South Korea, Senegal, Italy, and more make up an impressive list of Scorsese’s favorite films, including “A Trip to the Moon,” “Pearl,” “Diary of a Country Priest,” and more.

(Clockwise from bottom left): “8½,” “The Shining,” “Vertigo,” and “Midsommar”

AP/Warner Bros/A24/Everett

“The clouds lifted” for cinema’s future recently. At least that was how Martin Scorsese felt after he saw “TÁR,” on which he lavished praise at the New York Film Critics Circle awards dinner in early January 2023.

That kind of praise means a lot. Scorsese is not just one of the greatest filmmakers of all time: he’s one of its greatest cinephiles. In recent years, he’s become known for the movies — or, as he might say of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “theme parks” — he doesn’t enjoy. But the Oscar-winning director’s favorite films are as wide-ranging in genre, year of release, and national origin as you might imagine, from Ti West’s “Pearl” to the horror flicks of Val Lewton and the works of Senegalese master Djibril Diop Mambety.

Of course, Scorsese has also been an unflagging champion of film preservation and discovery, helping to restore many films through his Film Foundation and World Cinema Project. He’s also talked at length about his personal favorites in his documentaries “A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies” (which it must be noted, has supplied a great deal of the films below), “My Voyage to Italy,” and “Letter to Elia.” You can screen many of these titles for free on the Film Foundation’s website.

Scorsese’s knowledge of film history suffuses his filmmaking as well. Many have noted how Joe Pesci’s Tommy DeVito shooting into the camera at the end of “Goodfellas” is a nod to the final shot of “The Great Train Robbery.” Meanwhile the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring “Shutter Island” throws back to film noir, and even something like “The Wolf of Wall Street,” with its heady mixture of depravity and moralism, seems inflected by his love of Cecil B. DeMille. There’s even “Hugo”: a historical fiction adaptation anchored in the transcendent, turn-of-the-century silent short “A Trip to the Moon” from Georges Méliès.

What’s up next from Scorsese? Based on David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction book of the same name, “Killers of the Flower Moon” explores a string of murders in 1920s Oklahoma, involving the Osage Nation and an oil tycoon played by DiCaprio. Having first worked together on “Gangs of New York,” Scorsese is reuniting with the actor for the first time since their 2015 short “The Audition.” “Killers of the Flower Moon” is expected in 2023.

Below is an incomplete collection of 58 of Scorsese’s favorite movies, listed in no particular order. It was compiled from years of interviews with the director, as well as clear cinematic references from Scorsese’s filmography and most recently his ballot for the 2022 Sight & Sound poll.

With editorial contributions from Zack Sharf.

Movies from the U.S., India, South Korea,

“All of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill,” Daniel Kwan said.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” Oscar winners The Daniels don’t have time to combat the commentary that they’ve been “sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’” after signing it was announced they had signed on to direct Disney+ “Star Wars” series “The Skeleton Crew.”

The series will star Jude Law and centers on a group of kids from a planet who get lost in the larger “Star Wars” galaxy. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” director Jon Watts, the showrunner of the series, confirmed it’s a “Stranger Things”-type adventure series about the adolescents trying to find their way home.

Academy Award winners Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert responded to fan backlash over their move to Disney.

“Lol, all of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill. These headlines are always misleading,” Kwan shared on Instagram Stories. “Don’t worry. We aren’t working on a whole series, we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode a while ago (before ‘EEAAO’ even came out). We love Jon, love ‘Star Wars,’ love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!) so it was an easy yes.”

Kwan added, “I’m excited for you all to see it. Our next film will be an original Daniels project so you can stop worrying (and stop bothering me about it).”

The Daniels shot the “Skeleton Crew” episode last year prior to sweeping the 2023 Oscars. The duo won Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” with stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis winning respective acting awards.

The Daniels told IndieWire’s Eric Kohn at the 2022 SXSW during the premiere of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” that the directing duo turned down working with Marvel on the Disney+ series “Loki” and instead pursued their own independent multiverse film.

“There were meetings with Marvel about ‘Loki’ that we didn’t even take,” Scheinert said.

Co-director Kwan added, “We were trying to make our own multiverse movie. No, the meeting was set, and we went, but by the time we went we said we probably weren’t going to do it. We were trying to shoot our own movie at the same time.”

Few past contenders returning leaves room for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series to include more “Yellowjackets” stars, and even Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”).

We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2023 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, with an edited presentation of the ceremonies to be broadcast on FXX at a later date. Finally, the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Monday, September 18, and air live on FOX at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

Though it has not yet been confirmed, common sense would dictate putting “The White Lotus” star Jennifer Coolidge in the lead category for her work on Season 2, given how it’s her character’s continued storyline specifically that made the TV Academy for the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series-winning show to switch categories.

After she was unceremoniously cut off from finishing her acceptance speech for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series at last year’s Emmys, the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards allowed Coolidge to basically become the main character of their telecasts. She is in great standing to pull off the rare feat of winning an Emmy for the same role, but in a completely different category (“Orange is the New Black” star Uzo Aduba is the most recent example that comes to mind, having won in both a Comedy and a Drama category).

Coolidge’s primary competition would be Melanie Lynskey of the buzzy Showtime series “Yellowjackets.” The New Zealand-born star already has a Critics Choice Award under her belt and was assumed to have been the actress who came the closest to winning over “Euphoria” star Zendaya last year. With many female-led ensembles sitting out this particular Emmy year, Lynskey’s “Yellowjackets” teammates Tawny Cypress and Juliette Lewis stand a decent chance of joining her in receiving nominations for their work on Season 2.

Going back to Zendaya’s historic second Emmy win last year, her achievement opens the door for fellow young actors like “House of the Dragon” star Emma D’Arcy and “The Last of Us” star Bella Ramsey to be embraced by the TV Academy. More seasoned actresses like Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”), Helen Mirren (“1923”), and Christine Baranski in her final season of “The Good Fight” stand a fighting chance of making it in as well.

Then, of course, are former Emmy nominees like Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Betty Gilpin (“Mrs. Davis”) who the TV Academy continually have their eye on, and “The Handmaid’s Tale” star Elisabeth Moss, the only contender to have already won an Emmy for her current role.

Current Contenders (In Alphabetical Order):
Christine Baranski, “The Good Fight” (Paramount+)
Jennifer Coolidge, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
Morfydd Clark, “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” (Amazon Prime Video)
Tawny Cypress, “Yellowjackets” (Showtime)
Emma D’Ary, “House of the Dragon” (HBO)
Betty Gilpin, “Mrs. Davis” (Peacock)
Sharon Horgan, “Bad Sisters” (Apple TV+)
Juliette Lewis, “Yellowjackets” (Showtime)
Melanie Lynskey, “Yellowjackets” (Showtime)
Helen Mirren, “1923” (Paramount+)
Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu)
Bella Ramsey, “The Last of Us” (HBO)
Keri Russell, “The Diplomat” (Netflix)
Imelda Staunton, “The Crown” (Netflix)
Hilary Swank, “Alaska Daily” (ABC)

More Drama Category Predictions:
Outstanding Drama Series
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

To see IndieWire’s full set of predictions for the 75th Emmy Awards click here.

Last Year’s Winner: Zendaya, “Euphoria”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: There are no possible streaks here in the traditional sense. It’s been a decade since an actress won this award in back-to-back years, and with “Euphoria” not coming back anytime soon, that will not change this year. That all said, Imelda Staunton does have a shot at becoming the third actress to win the Emmy for playing Queen Elizabeth II on “The Crown.” Her predecessors won for their second seasons in the role though, not their first.
Notable Ineligible Series: Britt Lower, “Severance” (Season 2 was not eligible); Zendaya, “Euphoria” (Season 3 was not eligible); Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, “The Morning Show” (Season 3 was not eligible); Millie Bobby Brown, “Stranger Things” (Season 5 was not eligible); Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh, “Killing Eve” (ended); Laura Linney, “Ozark” (ended); Mandy Moore, “This is Us” (ended)

Los Angeles non-profit The Film Collaborative has boarded Swedish director Tove Pils’ debut feature “Labor,” which is competing in the Nordic:Dox section at the Copenhagen Intl. Documentary Film Festival, CPH:DOX.

The film follows Hanna, who leaves her family and girlfriend behind in her small Swedish hometown and travels to San Francisco to explore her sexuality in the city’s vibrant queer scene. She soon meets Chloe, a professional dominatrix, and Cyd, a trans man who works as an escort for gay men. Together with her new friends, she embarks on a journey that takes her further and further away from her life in Sweden.

“Labor” was shot over more than a decade, and one of the reasons it took them so long to put the film together was their concern for the protagonists’ anonymity and the effect it might have on their lives, Pils explains to Variety.

“The way people reacted to me even using the word sex work here in Sweden made me doubt why I was making the film, and if anyone would even be able to listen to what my friends in the film had to say or take in this world that I wanted to portray,” she says.

They were keen to offer a better understanding of their protagonists’ choices, and for them not to be perceived as victims, but as workers with agency over their own lives.

“It felt very violent when people, for example, would say that all sex workers are being raped. I didn’t want my friends in the film to have to deal with that – the violence of someone else defining when you are being raped or not.”

After taking a break in the filmmaking and enrolling at the Academy of Art and Design in Gothenburg, Pils came to realize the answer was in the question: Hanna would not appear in the film, but her voice-over would weave together the interviews with the protagonists.

“I realized that it made so much sense to create the whole form of the film around [the topic of anonymity] since the question of being open or not was so present in the work with the film and is very present for most sex workers that I have met,” Pils says.

“Hanna could be more open than she was in the interviews, and the voice-over also allowed the audience to be ‘inside’ her thoughts, travel with her to the queer community in San Francisco, and follow her whole emotional journey.”

The result is an intimate doc where Pils’ ever-present camera takes viewers on an emotional ride that challenges common perceptions of sex and sex work with sensitivity and respect.

“Labor” is competing in the Nordic:Dox section at CPH:DOX

For The Film Collaborative co-executive director Jeffrey Winter, it was a perfect match: “We are known globally for our dedication to cutting-edge queer film portraying oft misunderstood and further marginalized LGBT subcultures, so ‘Labor’ fits our mission and our passion perfectly.”

Recent titles boarded by The Film Collaborative include 2023 Oscar nominee “All That Breathes” and 2022 Sundance winners “Framing Agnes” and “I Didn’t See You There.”

“Labor” is produced by Melissa Lindgren for Swedish production company Story AB in co-production with Kristina Börjeson and Jenny Luukkonen for Film i Väst, with support from the Swedish Film Institute.

The film had its world premiere at Gothenburg Film Festival in competition for the Dragon Award, and had its international premiere at CPH:DOX on March 21. The festival runs in Copenhagen from March 15 through March 26.

Footage has emerged of Ukrainian troops using remote-controlled ‘kamikaze’ cars packed with explosives to obliterate Russian tanks.

Fighting is mainly centred around the easternmost regions of Ukraine, where the city of Bakhmut has been locked in intense conflict.

Some Ukrainian soldiers on the frontlines are now using explosive-packed remote-controlled cars, also known as unmanned ground vehicles, to hit Russian targets, according to a video shared on social media over the weekend.

The video, first posted as part of a YouTube documentary about the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, appears to show Ukrainian soldiers prepare a remote-controlled vehicle for battle before sending it off.

The soldiers are then seen controlling the vehicle’s movement on a phone, so that it explodes near what appears to be a Russian tank.

Video from the documentary was posted over the weekend on Twitter, where it has gained more than 400,000 views.

‘Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade is using kamikaze UGVs packed with explosives on Russian positions,’ tweeted Rob Lee, a Foreign Policy Research Institute senior fellow.

The use of these UGVs was also covered by the pro-Russian Telegram channel Reports of the militia of Novorossiya ZOV, which argued that the weapons ‘can be dangerous for armored vehicles, dugouts and personnel’.

More information about the extent of the use of the remote-controlled vehicles, including how many Ukraine holds and how often soldiers are using this type of weapon, has not been released by the Ukrainian military.

The Third Separate Assault Brigade was formed last year from the Azov Regiment. Its soldiers have been fighting in the battle to take Bakhmut, where attritional warfare has seen soldiers fighting in trenches.

Russia has also used UGVs throughout the war, including their ‘Marker’ vehicles, four of which were send to eastern Ukraine in January.

Ukraine said on Tuesday that Russian cruises missiles were destroyed in a blast on the Crimean peninsula that was annexed by Moscow in 2014, but denied responsibility for the ‘mysterious’ incident.

‘An explosion in the town of Dzhankoi in the north of temporarily occupied Crimea destroyed Russian Kalibr-NK cruise missiles as they were being transported by rail,’ Ukrainian military intelligence said in a statement on social media.

Russian investigators had earlier said that air defence systems repelled a drone attack at Dzhankoi and that debris from the incident damaged a shop and home and left one person injured.

‘The targets of all downed drones were civilian objects,’ the Investigative Committee added in its statement.

Dzhankoi is a logistics hub on the border between Russian-controlled Crimea and southern Ukraine, which came under control of Russian forces after they invaded in February last year.

Oleg Kryuchkov, an advisor to the Russian-installed head of Crimea, said the attack was apparently ‘revenge’ for the annexation, several days after Moscow celebrated the ninth anniversary of the region’s takeover.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Crimea over the weekend, marking his first trip to the peninsula since he sent troops to Ukraine on February 24 last year.

For the past two seasons, The Goldbergs has been led by now-widowed Beverly Goldberg (Wendi McLendon-Covey). During an interview on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live Tuesday, the Bravo star asked McLendon-Covey how she feels about Beverly being a widow following the exit of fellow series star Jeff Garlin, whose character, Beverly’s husband Murray, was killed off.

“That was a long time coming, and that it finally happened it was like, ‘Okay, okay. Finally, someone is listening to us,’” she said.

Over a 12-month period, The Goldbergs had to navigate through the loss of two cast members, George Segal, who died, and Garlin, who exited following HR investigations. Segal’s character, Pops, also passed away on the show.

“We had lost George Segal in real like, and then to have to go through another loss on a sitcom, you can’t keep asking your audience to mourn people… That’s not why they tune in,” McLendon-Covey said.

Cohen brought the conversation back to Garlin’s exit, getting McLendon-Covey to confirm that it was the result of a long period of people complaining before she asked to change the subject.

“If we cannot talk about that would be great. I’m exhausted-by that topic and the PTSD of it all,” she said and later added, “I feel like the less people know about that, the better. No one, no one benefits from knowing anything.”

The Goldbergs is now in its 10th and final season, with the series finale set for May 3. Meanwhile, McLendon-Covey was recently tapped to lead another single-camera broadcast comedy, NBC pilot St. Denis Medical.

It is often easy to forget that GPU stands for Graphics Processing Unit, but in yesterday’s busy GTC 2023 (GPU Technology Conference) sessions, Nvidia announced no less than four new processors (the company’s own word) as it looks to cement its position as the AI hardware champion with barely any competition in sight.

The extraordinary success of ChatGPT has helped shape the narrative, boosting demand for bigger, better, larger, more powerful inference computing platforms.

“The number of applications for generative AI is infinite, limited only by human imagination. Arming developers with the most powerful and flexible inference computing platform will accelerate the creation of new services that will improve our lives in ways not yet imaginable.” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

Because Nvidia has a much smaller set of customers to service, it can deliver fine tuned products for specific tasks. The new L4 for AI video is 120x more powerful at video performance than CPUs while the L40 for image generation is 7x better at inference for Stable Diffusion than the previous generation.

The H100 NVL has been built to tackle massive LLM (Large Language Model) deployments with a whopping 94GB of memory, helping it deliver 12x faster inference performance on the already-obsolete ChatGPT3 (and compared to the previous A100 generation). Last on the list is the Nvidia Grace Hopper superchip for recommendation models that brings Nvidia’s Arm based CPU and GPU closer and is expected later this year.

What about Intel and AMD?

For 40 years, the CPU (Central Processing Unit) has been at the core of computing but we’re witnessing – live – a leadership coup. Nvidia single handedly tilted the balance of power; Intel has been the biggest loser with its share price halved since last year while AMD continues to play second fiddle in the land of GPU (less so when it comes to CPU).

The CPU was always in the danger of being supplanted due to its generic nature; it is a jack of all trade after all. The GPU (and other more exotic processing units) leveraged their ability to bring hardware and software closer (through Nvidia’s API CUDA for example) to excel in specialized workloads.

Nvidia’s long lasting impact is illustrated by a new service called cuLitho (short for computational lithography) where it collaborated with ASML, TSMC and Synopsys to help design and manufacture the next generation of chips, regardless of whether its CPU, GPU, NAND or any other silicon-based product. Here we have GPUs accelerating the development of the next generation of GPUs with Nvidia predicting a performance improvement of 40x compared to CPU.

With a market capitalization of almost $640 billion, Nvidia is worth more than Qualcomm ($137bn), Intel ($117bn), AMD ($153bn) and Arm (est. $50bn) put together. With Nvidia having seemingly built an insurmountable lead in AI hardware, all odds are off as to who will be second best.

Do they sell murder implements in the gift registry?

Looks like we’re going to find out, because Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short showed some behind the scenes pictures of themselves dressed in wedding attire on the season three set of “Only Murders in the Building.”

Is there a wedding on the horizon? It’s unknown at this point, but the photos they posted suggested someone — Mabel, maybe? — is getting married in the building. Martin posted the picture Twitter and showed him arm locked with Gomez. “Guess what just happened!” he said.

A few minutes later, Martin posted another picture on Twitter. This time, it’s Gomez and Short standing next to each other in wedding attire with the caption “Turns out this happened, too.”

Gomez went to Instagram to post herself in the wedding dress as she wore big white boots and holding up a Coca-Cola in her hand. Her caption was just as cryptic, writing “I have no caption. Just a regular day at work.”

It’s a tantalizing new detail about Season 3, especially since details have been carefully meted out. , it was announced Meryl Streep is joining the cast — delightful, even if we don’t know what role she’s playing.

Nevertheless, the pictures Gomez, Martin, and Short are the first big visuals that hint at the actual story. Now if they could just let us know when Season 3 actually comes out?

A while ago, the 25-year-old did an advertising campaign for Bai water. And probably drinking a lot of water is the reason behind the actress’s gorgeous skin. However, being an actress, Sweeney is under constant pressure to look good all the time, as stars get captured a lot. Hence, recently she shared five essential things she uses on a daily basis and cannot live without.

5 essential products that help Sydney Sweeney get ready anywhere, anytime?

The White Lotus star recently did a “Five in Five” episode with Elle in which she revealed her five essentials. Fans will be surprised to know that the Spokane native might have become a superstar, but she is a regular person and does not use extremely fancy products. Moreover, being the woman of her word that she is, the Euphoria star ensures that she uses the products she endorses.

1. Moisturizer

First things first, a moisturizer is essential for the actress as she has a combination of skin that inclines more on the dry side. Hence, she constantly needs moisturizer, and Laneige’s hyaluronic cream moisturizer helps hydrate her skin. Sydney Sweeney revealed that she uses it both during the day and the night and is also the brand’s endorser.

2. Eye Mask

Whenever the actress travels or goes to the set, she puts on the 111 Skin Celestial Black Diamond Eyemask. The 25-year-old told that she puts these eyepatches every time she is on a flight and does not take them down until they transform to a paper texture from being in the form of jelly.

3. Aloe Vera Gel

This is something that Sweeney carries with her without missing. She called it her savior and revealed that aloe heels her rashes faster than anything, hence she carries a travel-size pack of it every time with her.

5. Perfume

Last but not the least, the Sharp Objects star loves to wear perfume and uses the My Way edition of Armani fragrances, which she also endorses. She mentioned that the perfume makes her nostalgic for her childhood and hence one of the reasons why she wears it all the time.

Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna’s popularity multiplied after their film Pushpa. (Photos: Instagram)

The top five South Indian celebrities with the largest social media following are Tamannaah Bhatia, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, and Mahesh Babu.

Pushpa stars Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna have backed the spot in the top 25 most valuable celebrities in India, according to the 2022 Celebrity Brand Valuation Report by Kroll. Allu Arjun’s brand value is $31.4 million (more than Rs 259 crore), which places him 20th on the list, while Rashmika Mandanna ranks 25th with a brand value of $25.3 million (approx. Rs 209 crore). This achievement has led to an increase in the overall brand value of top stars from South India.

According to Aviral Jain, the Managing Director of Valuation Advisory Services at Kroll, Allu Arjun has ten brands in 2022, but his fees for endorsements are not as high as those charged by top Bollywood celebrities. On the other hand, “Rashmika Mandanna has a larger portfolio of 20 brands, but her endorsement fees are similar to those of emerging Bollywood celebrities,” Jain revealed.

Jain also noted that the brand value of non-Bollywood celebrities has doubled over the last five years, causing the overall brand value of Bollywood stars to decrease from 81.7 per cent in 2016 to 67.6 per cent in 2022. Meanwhile, the brand value of sports stars has increased from 18.3 per cent in 2016 to 28.9 per cent in 2022.

As per Jain, the share of South Indian celebrities in the overall brand value is likely to increase in the future. He predicts that “A-list brands are considering multiple celebrity associations with traditional celebrities and regional superstars, and brands that primarily target the South Indian market are working with South Indian stars.” With the help of their ongoing success in the film business, more South Indian celebrities would be able to broaden their appeal to a national audience as a result.

Apart from that, the top five South Indian celebrities with the largest social media following are Tamannaah Bhatia, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, and Mahesh Babu, who have 53.5 million, 52.5 million, 48.1 million, 47.1 million, and 37.3 million followers, respectively, across Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms.

South Indian cinema has emerged as a prominent force, strengthening its presence across the country. Films produced in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam languages from South India have gained immense popularity not just in the traditional Southern Indian states, but also in other parts of India and international markets.

Meanwhile, Allu Arjun will next be seen in Sukumar’s directorial film Pushpa: The Rule alongside Rashmika Mandanna in the lead. The project is currently in its production stage and its makers have not revealed much details about the film.

Nick Lachey’s temper has landed him in hot water.

After a heated run-in with a female paparazzo last year, singer-turned-TV personality Nick Lachey has been ordered to attend anger management classes and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings as a condition of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office’s pre-filing diversion program.

The case report obtained by the Daily Mail shows the “This I Swear” singer initially faced charges of assault and battery against photographer Jody Santos in March 2022.

According to Santos, Lachey did not receive any formal punishment until she relentlessly pursued the Beverly Hills Police Department and accused them of giving the singer preferential treatment.

“Finally they called me back and said, ‘No, he’s not getting preferential treatment’ and explained that they have a program with the courts where they don’t let misdemeanors just walk,” she told the Daily Mail in an interview published Tuesday.

The D.A.’s office told The Times that Lachey has not been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery, but will instead complete anger management classes and attend 12-step meetings. If he completes those successfully, criminal charges will not be filed.

“A personal apology was declined, then a written apology was declined,” Santos continued in the Tuesday interview. “No one from his team has reached out and asked, ‘Are you OK?’

“He’s had plenty of time to apologize, but instead he just figured I would go away,” she said. “What he did was wrong. Attempting to bust his fist through my car window when all I was doing was taking photographs of him. He should have been thanking me for the free publicity.”

The altercation happened about a year ago in Beverly Hills as Lachey and his wife and “Love Is Blind” co-host, Vanessa Lachey, were leaving Mastro’s Steakhouse. Santos was sitting in her car across the street, snapping photos of the celebrity couple.

The photographer told the Daily Mail that Lachey punched her car window repeatedly and she feared he would break through the glass.

“In all my years of photographing celebrities, no one has ever tried to hit me,” Santos said.

Videos that captured part of the incident show Lachey angrily approaching Santos and reaching through her window and into her car, seemingly trying to snatch her camera or phone. Photos also show Lachey repeatedly flipping off Santos.

“He has to complete [anger management and AA] within a reasonable time, which is like a year or so,” Santos said.

“If he fails to do so, they will move forward to prosecute him with noncompliance and he will get arrested.”

The “Masked Singer” Season 5 winner tweeted about the incident the day after it happened, saying that he and his wife were being harassed.

He also tweeted that he was not violent, although the Beverly Hills Police Department seems to have disagreed.

In a shocking twist of events, longtime Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso has left the company.

While the reasons for her exit are still unclear, inside sources say that she left the company on Friday.

Joining Marvel Studios

Victoria Alonso joined Marvel Studios in 2006 at the behest of her friend, Louis D’Esposito, who was working on the first Iron Man film with Jon Favreau.

Although initially brought on as a VFX producer, Alonso took on a bigger role during the film’s production. She eventually received co-producer credit.

Iron Man Simulator

For the rest of Marvel’s Phase 1 films, Alonso held the title of chief of visual effects and post-production,. In 2012, she was named Executive Vice President and Chief of Production and Post-Production at Marvel Studios. Beginning with 2012’s The Avengers, Alonso received Executive Producer credit on all of Marvel’s releases.

Leader in the Industry

While working at Marvel, Alonso formed something of a triumvirate with President Keven Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito.

While D’Esposito focused largely on talent and pre-production, Victoria oversaw the physical and post-production. Kevin Feige, on the other hand, continued to craft the studio’s master plan.

In this role, Alonso thrived and helped launch Marvel Studios from relative obscurity to pop culture behemoth. Fan favorite characters such as Captain America, Thor, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man all shined on the big screen thanks to Alonso’s vision.

In 2021, Marvel began to expand their horizons into animation. At this time,  Alonso was given the title of President of Physical, Post Production, Visual Effects, and Animation.

Turmoil With VFX Artists

Although Alonso had continued to be highly respected inside the entertainment industry, as Marvel ramped up its release schedule, VFX artists began to air their complaints.

Victoria Alonso

After a slew of criticism surrounding the VFX and CGI work on recent releases such as Thor: Love and Thunder and She-Hulk, things finally hit a breaking point.

In January 2023, Vulture reported that VFX artists were being pushed to the brink by Marvel, and many artists shared that they experienced emotional breakdowns over the stress. Within that report also came the revelation that Alonso kept a blacklist of employees who failed to hit scene quotas or left a project early.

“The main one that everyone’s quite scared of is Victoria Alonso. She is known in the industry as a kingmaker. If she likes you, you are going to get work and move up in the industry. If you have pissed her off in any way, you’re going to get frozen out,” a former Marvel VFX employee said.

A Rocky End To A Great Career

With Marvel Studios facing increased pressure from Disney CEO Bob Iger to “push for profit,” an estranged relationship with the VFX community was not a good look.

While the reasons for Alonso’s departure remain unclear, the studio’s reputation among animators and recent struggles with critics and fans alike was certainly a problem.

Recently, Marvel Studios was accused of rushing post-production VFX work on Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, which made have led to subpar effects.

In the end, however, despite a tumultuous couple of years, Victoria Alonso will be remembered as one of the luminaries of the superhero movie genre. Her work at Marvel Studios has not only launched an international brand, but it changed the shape of cinema as we know it.

In a shocking twist

The conflicts around DC Studios do not stop. Despite the fact that several months have passed since the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-CEOs of the new division of Warner Bros. Discovery in charge of everything related to the comics company, and that they have already revealed part of the plan to the new DCU, questions about its management persist. This time, in a way more personal matter.

This article contains spoilers for Shazam! Fury of the GodsIn the most recent production of the franchise, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, one of the post-credit scenes includes Jennifer Holland, Gunn’s wife, who plays Emilia Harcourt in the spin-off of The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker. Because of this appearance, followers of the director have accused him of nepotism. As is his custom, James came out to defend himself:

“The only DC movie I’ve ever cast my wife in was The Suicide Squad. I had nothing to do with the casting of any other movie – anything else was shot a year or so ago while I was deep in Vol 3. But I know some of you are deeply in need of reasons to hate.”

The sequel to Shazam! was announced and made way before Gunn was named DC Studios CEO, so there’s no real relation between the events of the David F. Sandberg movie and his vision for the DCU, at least for now. But he clarified that many characters from previous projects would still continue in the franchise, some from stories like Peacemaker.

David Ayer Defends James Gunn

The director of the first Suicide Squad, David Ayer, is another of those who is always present on social media to debate or respond to his fans. In the midst of the controversy over Gunn’s wife, the director came out in defense of his co-worker:

“There are those who are committed to taking cheap shots from the Grassy Knoll. The high road of positivity and creation will always win. Right now you have the hardest job in Hollywood. And you’ll make it look easy and a little fun too.”

Like Zack Snyder with Justice League, Ayer has his version of the 2016 film that hasn’t seen the light of day, and both he and the fans hope to get it out. At the moment, it seems difficult, but the director began saying weeks ago that he had spoken with Gunn about that possibility, and he was hopeful.

LG is once again expanding its UltraGear line of gaming monitors with a new model. Before you ask: No, the company’s latest is not a . But it is interesting for a few reasons. LG is marketing the as a fast ultrawide with class-leading HDR capabilities.

The monitor features a 49-inch VA panel with a 32:9 aspect ratio, 5,120 by 1,440 resolution, 98.5 percent DCI-P3 coverage and an aggressive 1000R curve. It also features a 240Hz refresh rate, a claimed 1ms pixel response time and AMD FreeSync Premium. To top it all off, LG says the 49GR85DC-B is DisplayHDR 1000 certified, suggesting the panel is capable of peaking at an eye-searing 1000 nits of brightness and features some amount of local dimming.

At first glance, it’s a spec list that should make the 49GR85DC-B a homerun for ultrawide gaming fans, but there are a few things to note that may not make it as appealing as it seems. First, there’s the price. LG is asking $1,300 for the 49GR85DC-B. In 2023, that’s a lot for an LCD. Additionally, in my experience, VA panels are never as fast as manufacturers say they are, so don’t be surprised if LG’s latest doesn’t live up to the 1ms response time the company has listed. It’s also worth mentioning few games support 32:9 resolutions.

The 49GR85DC-B is available to preorder starting today through LG’s website. If you decide to jump on this one early, the company will send you a complimentary . That’s a $200 mouse mat that doubles as a USB hub and features RGB lighting.

Of all the sweatpants we have (or intended to) sweat in, the Lululemon City Sweat jogger consistently ranks among our favorites. That hard-earned pedigree largely stems from the brand’s authority in the space; there’s a reason Lululemon’s slick workout gear is ubiquitous in gyms (and—deep sigh—offices) across the country, and though the Canadian company isn’t the first place we’d turn to stock up on 9-to-5 staples, its activewear remains a perennial standout.

Plenty of that authority boils down to function—the City Sweat joggers are crafted from cozy-as-hell French terry, with just enough stretch in the mix—but Lululemon deserves some shine for its emphasis on form too. Its sweats are dependably sleek, cut tapered and slightly cropped, and they always come equipped with the type of nifty specs that lesser brands tend to ignore completely. In this case, that mean a duo of side pockets, naturally, but also a discreet zippered back pocket large enough to store your wallet, keys, and half-eaten Clif bar. They make for excellent lazy Sunday attire, sure, but they also don’t look half bad when you need to hightail it to the corner store and can’t quite muster the energy to change into jeans.

Here’s the catch: We’re not the only ones who think so. The City Sweat joggers are one of Lululemon’s most popular silhouettes, which means the brand has little reason to put them on sale. Except right now they are, in some cases for a whopping half off. They come in a handful of muted jewel tones, but for our money, your best bet is the shade of red the brand calls mulled wine, which is available in a near-full run of sizes for 70 bucks. (Plus free shipping!)

Will you be the only person in your neighborhood/group chat/neighborhood group chat who owns a pair? More than 400 glowing reviews say…probably not. But the Lululemon City Sweat jogger helped turn the upstart yoga brand into a multi-billion-dollar athleisure juggernaut, and if you’ve always been curious to give its hero product a try, you’d be hard-pressed to find it at a better price. And you can shop the rest of the sale items here.

Kourtney Kardashian’s wedding style is the gift that keeps on giving. The 41-year-old famously got hitched to Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker in May 2022 and celebrated the union in multiple ceremonies. The couple eloped in Las Vegas in April, but there was no official certificate until their May celebration in Santa Barbara, California. A week after their first ceremony, they married each other (legally) all over again in Portofino, Italy. With multiple weddings comes multiple looks, and Kourtney Kardashian did not disappoint.

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

On March 20 the Poosh founder posted never-before-seen pictures of her wedding looks. One slide featured the concept art for her all-black corset and lace look, designed and signed by Dolce & Gabbana. The corset minidress, thigh-high sheer tights, and elbow-length gloves are all lace, adding a softness to the dark color palette. Kardashian walked down the aisle wearing an all-white replica of the same outfit.

Other snapshots in the post include a vase of roses alongside black pumps, two pairs of white heels matching a lace veil, and another mirror selfie of Kardashian’s all-white bride moment. The final picture revealed several sheets of concept art for Kardashian’s big day, including the immaculate floor-length veil that she modeled after hubby Travis Barker’s head tattoo of the Virgin Mary (he also has a tattoo of her eyes on his thigh).

That was quite fun and quite entertaining.

On The Rookie: Feds Season 1 Episode 18, a surprise during a simple breakfast meeting between two new friends put Simone and the team in the middle of a family quarrel that could very much have had international implications.

Simone, Laura, and Brendon dealt with the issues that could arise from the job and affect their personal lives.

For Simone, it was the fact the job was demanding, both physically and mentally.

Reality had to be suspended for entertainment’s sake for most of Rookie: Feds Season 1 by ignoring that Simone was advanced in age. Being so close to fifty years old is no minor feat and does affect someone.

A fifty-year-old does not have the same energy and sharpness as a twenty-year-old.

It might sound ageist, but that is a fact. The level to which this can affect their ability to do their job should be the only consideration, and Simone can do it quite well. Her age is not solely a liability because it affords her the advantage of lived experience, and a person learns a thing or two during that time.

Simone always knew that her age might come up occasionally, and it won’t be used to praise her.

And when it did, she became guarded and defensive to the point she nearly crossed a line with her training agent.

Naomi: You got your co-workers thinking you’re a black superhero. You’re fifty years old …
Simone: … forty-eight, thank you.
Naomi: … and you’re doing too much. Aren’t you tired?

Her constant overperformance was an important conversation, and having Naomi, who was the absolute best at discussing such issues, was great.

Not pairing them together romantically just because they are two Queer women in the same orbit was a great decision by the writers. Having a friend who makes one feel comfortable enough to talk about issues without feeling like they are being judged cannot be overstated.

It is even an added advantage if they can introduce to you a hobby such as knitting.

Brendon’s sobriety was important to him, just like it is to every alcoholic in recovery. He made a good decision coming clean about it to Antoinette sooner in their relationship because it would have been tough to explain where he went in the middle of the night after receiving a call from another woman.

Alcoholism is a disease that society didn’t understand much of and thus treated like a vice. It takes a lot to unlearn years of shame; even if someone knows they have nothing to be ashamed of, it is hard to reconcile logic and emotion.

Brendon looked uncomfortable when he learned that Antoinette had spoken to Simone about his sponsor’s fall.

Apart from alcoholism being the topic of the conversation, it also had another layer because that was his sponsor. Sponsors pull people from some of the darkest places, and they develop meaningful bonds around their efforts to stay sober.

You know … Randy’s my guy. He saved my life. Told me what to do. At ten years sober, if he can go out, what chance do I have?

Brendon

The depth of the relationship between an alcoholic and their sponsor has been explored on 9-1-1, especially on 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 12, when something horrible happens to Bobby’s sponsor.

And look, someone can weaponize another person’s alcoholism, especially in relationships, to maintain control.

Despite his previous apprehension, Brendon understood that Antoinette came from a place of care and concern, so he didn’t punish her. It was a great distinction that needed to be made that many people don’t usually get.

It might become a problem later if she fixates on it or uses it against him, but they both seem to be handling it well.

He was also placed in a position where he might have drunk, but how he handled himself was impressive.

Even with his fans who were drunk and fantasizing about him in the nude, it must have taken a lot of will not to sneak a sip.

Laura is one to blaze through situations, especially when on the job, and she usually can handle herself. However, being ambushed in Viktor’s office reminded her of the real danger they face every day.

It made her grapple with her mortality, and she handled it by shutting down. That was the wrong way to approach it.

Garza: It’s been four months since Simone and Brendon have joined this team, and I wanna commend you both for getting them this far.
Carter: I appreciate that, man. Considering I had a tougher assignment with Simone.
Laura: Excuse me! I’ve been turning a former tv star … meat puppet, into a solid agent. My job is way tougher.
Carter: At least actors can take instructions. Do you know how hard I’ve had to work to break a wild horse, especially one that keeps reminding you she’s Black beauty?

The case they worked on was inconsistent, with one minute seemingly a matter of life and death and the next being reduced to a family squabble.

The twists in the cases are usually great because they always seem to elevate the stakes, but this one was not it.

The episode teased epic international politics, but it was reduced to a classic tale of a boy who could never see himself as a man in front of daddy because daddy doesn’t respect him enough.

The team has had some pretty epic cases; this one was easily forgettable.

Extra thoughts

  • The exchange between Laura and Carter about whose rookie was the hardest to train was very funny. It was heartwarming to see Carter back down and let her have the win after he noticed that she was feeling down.

Carter: How about this: they are both (Simone and Brendon) equal pain in the ass.
Laura: I just think it’s fourteen more months left to go.

  • Has Matt finally warmed up to the idea of dating again?

  • The “being famous in Belarus” bit could have been better if they had used Brazil instead. Have you seen Brazillian fans on the internet?

“Seeing Red” was genuinely a fun episode that made up for its lack of extended action scenes with some great lessons and jokes.

What did you think? Was this fun or what?

Might Brendon’s sobriety affect his relationship?

That was quite fun and quite entertaining. On The

Al Franken used his trademark brand of humor Tuesday on “The Daily Show” to shed light on a starkly sobering development for global warming after the United Nations released a report stating the problem was more urgent than previously thought.

Franken, the former actor and screenwriter, “Saturday Night Live” star and U.S. Senator from Minnesota, called the situation “the story today that makes all the other stories kind of pointless.”

“According to the U.N, we’re all going to die,” Franken deadpanned.

“The Daily Show” then rolled clips of newscasts covering the report earlier Tuesday, with CNN calling it “a dire warning about the state of the planet” and ABC’s “Good Morning America” breaking down the facts of the matter, including that “every country in the world has to reduce emissions at warp speed to try to curb the warming of our planet.”

“Wow, that’s awful,” responded Franken, in his second day as guest host of the Comedy Central show. “But I guess a shoutout to my baby boomers — feels like we got the last chopper out of Saigon, doesn’t it. And that’s a reference we baby boomers understand.”

The joke is of course in reference to the final U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973 after a decade of war.

“Now, part of the problem is, the U.N.’s expectations of collective action,” Franken said. “It’s just easy to sherk our part when everybody has to chip in. So the solution here is to call out people individually.

“The next U.N. report shouldn’t say, ‘We all must lower our emissions.’ It should say, ‘Gary stop driving your car so much. You don’t need to visit your wife’s grave every day. She’s not keeping track.”

Al Franken used his trademark brand of

The lightning bolt boys are finally fighting.

In yet another sign that this era of the DC cinematic entertainment should’ve ended in 2013, Zachary Levi has seemingly confirmed that Dwayne Johnson nixed Levi’s Black Adam cameo and denied access to Black Adam characters for the latest Shazam. Black Adam can’t be seen fighting a jokey goofball like his canonical nemesis Shazam because, as we’ve noted, it’s the Rock’s dream to punch Superman in the face.

Perhaps the most important (only important?) post-credit sequence in superhero movie history, Black Adam ends with, what else, a phone call from Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) before Henry Cavill’s Superman flies in from the void of space to tell Johnson’s Black Adam, “We should talk.”

However, this was not the original plan. Honestly, it doesn’t seem like much of a plan, outside of a hail Mary to push the WBD brass into giving the Rock a bigger slice of the DC pie. And as we all know, the Rock loves pie. Per The Wrap, initially, Black Adam was to feature a post-credits scene where The Justice Society recruits Shazam. That certainly would’ve made more sense, considering Shazam wears the same shirt as Black Adam, is canonically linked to the character, and was opening a $100 million superhero movie only a few months later. But instead, Black Adam tried to force Hollywood’s hand into letting Johnson punch Superman.

Nevertheless, as he continues his Shazam! Fury Of The Gods apology tour, Levi seemingly confirmed Johnson’s duplicity in this. Responding to an Instagram story that details Johnson’s vetoing Levi’s cameo, the Shazam star commented, “The truth will set you free.”

“The Wrap confirms that in Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, the Justice Society from Black Adam were recruiting Shazam in the post credits,” the post reads. “The Rock denied access and [Shazam! director] David F. Sandberg had to make a last minute decision to add Emilia and John. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson attempted to restructure the DCEU, centering him and Henry Cavill’s Superman. The Rock didn’t allow Zachary Levi to cameo in a post-credit for Black Adam.

To use The Wrap’s verbiage, Johnson further “kneecapped” Shazam! Fury Of The Gods by refusing access to Black Adam characters for the movie. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director David F. Sandberg, using his most diplomatic voice possible, explained how the Fury Of The Gods post-credits scene came together.

So there were supposed to be characters from [Black Adam’s] Justice Society, but that fell apart three days before we were going to roll cameras. I was really upset because we had built that abandoned gas station set, and we could only shoot that scene in that little piece of forest. I was like, “This is so boring. We need something here.” So the art department built that whole gas station and brought in some old cars and things. They made it look really nice with very few resources, and so I was like, “We have this set and we have the time, so we have to shoot something here.”

So, Peter Safran, who produced this movie and Peacemaker, made some calls, and thankfully, Jen Holland and Steve Agee were able to come by on very short notice. I mean, the scene makes a little less sense with them. It’s like, “Why are they recruiting for Justice Society?” but you can kind of see it as they’re working for Amanda Waller [Viola Davis].

The more time passes, the more that Black Adam post-credit scene reveals itself as the most consequential since Samuel L. Jackson uttered the words “Avengers initiative.” It’s certainly more interesting than hearing fellow theatergoers grumble, “Who’s that,” “What are they from again,” and “I have to watch a TV show, too?”

There are several types of stories that are well-suited for low budget films. By choosing a story that is well-suited for a low budget film, you can focus on strong performances and storytelling rather than relying on expensive special effects or elaborate sets. It’s something I deal with on my weekend masterclass: Lo-To-No Budget Filmmaking

There are several types of stories that are well-suited for low budget films. Here are a few that I track. Im sure you will have your own examples that you can put into the comments box below.

1.Character-driven stories:

These types of stories focus on the development and relationships of the characters rather than relying on big action scenes or special effects. They can be set in a limited number of locations and are often driven by dialogue.

Here are a few examples of character-driven stories:

“Lost in Translation” (2003):

This movie follows the relationship between two characters, Bob (played by Bill Murray) and Charlotte (played by Scarlett Johansson), who meet while staying at the same hotel in Tokyo. The movie explores their emotional and existential struggles as they navigate their way through a foreign city and culture.

“Boyhood” (2014):

This movie follows the life of a boy named Mason (played by Ellar Coltrane) as he grows up over the course of 12 years. The movie explores the challenges and joys of growing up, as well as the complexities of family relationships.

“Moonlight” (2016):

This movie tells the story of a young black man named Chiron (played by Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes) as he grows up in Miami and struggles with his sexuality and his relationship with his mother. “The Florida Project” (2017):

This movie tells the story of a young girl named Moonee (played by Brooklynn Prince) and her mother Halley (played by Bria Vinaite), who live in a motel near Disney World in Florida. The movie explores the challenges and joys of childhood, as well as the struggles of poverty and the American Dream.

2.Small-scale dramas:

These types of stories typically focus on a small group of characters and their personal struggles. They often take place in one or two locations and rely on strong performances from the actors.”Manchester by the Sea” (2016): This movie follows the story of Lee Chandler (played by Casey Affleck), a janitor in Boston who returns to his hometown after his brother dies and becomes the legal guardian of his teenage nephew. The movie explores themes of grief, family, and personal responsibility.

“The Wrestler” (2008):

This movie tells the story of Randy “The Ram” Robinson (played by Mickey Rourke), a retired professional wrestler who tries to revive his career while also reconnecting with his estranged daughter. The movie explores the struggles of aging and the price of fame.

“Blue Valentine” (2010)

This movie follows the tumultuous relationship between a couple, Dean (played by Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (played by Michelle Williams), over the course of several years. The movie explores themes of love, marriage, and the complexities of relationships.

3. Coming-of-age stories:

These types of stories can be set in a variety of locations and often focus on the personal growth and development of a young protagonist. They don’t typically require expensive sets or special effects and can be filmed on a relatively low budget.

“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (2012):

https://youtu.be/n5rh7O4IDc0

This movie follows the story of Charlie (played by Logan Lerman), an introverted high school freshman who struggles with depression and forms a close bond with his new friends, Sam (played by Emma Watson) and Patrick (played by Ezra Miller).

 “Lady Bird” (2017):

This movie follows the story of Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (played by Saoirse Ronan), a high school senior in Sacramento, California, who dreams of leaving her hometown and attending college on the East Coast.

“The Breakfast Club” (1985):

https://youtu.be/BSXBvor47Zs

This movie tells the story of five high school students from different social groups who spend a Saturday in detention together and ultimately form unexpected bonds with each other.

Mystery or thriller stories:

These types of stories can be set in a limited number of locations and rely on tension and suspense rather than special effects or action scenes. They can be filmed on a low budget with creative camera angles and lighting.

Here are some examples of low budget thrillers:

“The Invitation” (2015):

This movie follows the story of a man named Will (played by Logan Marshall-Green) who attends a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife and her new husband, only to realize that something sinister is going on.

“Coherence” (2013):

This movie tells the story of a group of friends who gather for a dinner party, only to experience a series of strange and increasingly frightening events that threaten to unravel their relationships and their sense of reality.

“Creep” (2014):

This movie follows the story of a videographer named Aaron (played by Patrick Brice) who takes a job filming a strange man named Josef (played by Mark Duplass), only to realize that Josef is not what he seems.

“Hush” (2016):

This movie tells the story of a deaf writer named Maddie (played by Kate Siegel) who must fight for her life when a masked killer appears outside her isolated home.

“Green Room” (2015):

This movie follows the story of a punk rock band who find themselves trapped in a remote venue after witnessing a murder committed by a group of neo-Nazis. The movie is full of tension and suspense as the band members try to survive against all odds.

These movies demonstrate that a low budget does not necessarily limit the creativity or effectiveness of a thriller, and that a great story can be told without the need for extravagant production values or big-name actors.

Here are some examples of low budget mystery or thriller stories:

“The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (2017):

This movie follows the story of a surgeon (played by Colin Farrell) who befriends a teenage boy, only to realize that the boy’s intentions may not be entirely innocent. The movie is full of tension and suspense as the surgeon’s life and family are threatened.

“The Guilty” (2018):

This movie tells the story of a police officer (played by Jakob Cedergren) who receives a distressing phone call from a kidnapped woman, and must race against time to save her. The movie is shot almost entirely inside a single room, and relies heavily on the tension and drama of the phone call to create suspense.

“Blue Ruin” (2013):

This movie follows the story of a man named Dwight (played by Macon Blair) who seeks revenge on the man who killed his parents, only to find himself in over his head. The movie is a tense and gritty thriller that explores themes of violence, revenge, and redemption.

“The Invitation” (2015):

This movie tells the story of a dinner party that takes a dark and twisted turn, as old secrets and hidden agendas come to light. The movie is shot almost entirely inside a single house, and relies heavily on the tension and suspense of the characters’ interactions to create a sense of dread.

“Cheap Thrills” (2013):

https://youtu.be/I0e0PH70Nig

This movie follows the story of two friends who are offered money by a wealthy couple to perform increasingly dangerous and degrading stunts. The movie is a dark and twisted thriller that explores themes of desperation, greed, and moral compromise.

These movies demonstrate that a low budget can actually enhance the creativity and ingenuity of a mystery or thriller, forcing filmmakers to rely on storytelling and suspense rather than expensive special effects or elaborate sets.

Romantic comedies can make great low budget film stories :

These types of stories often take place in a limited number of locations and rely on the chemistry between the lead actors. They don’t typically require expensive sets or special effects and can be filmed on a relatively low budget.

Here are some examples of low budget romantic comedies:

“Before Sunrise” (1995):

This movie follows the story of two strangers, Jesse (played by Ethan Hawke) and Celine (played by Julie Delpy), who meet on a train in Europe and spend a romantic night exploring Vienna together. The movie is shot in real-time and relies heavily on the chemistry between the two lead actors to create a sense of romance and intimacy.

“Ingrid Goes West” (2017):

This movie tells the story of a young woman named Ingrid (played by Aubrey Plaza) who becomes obsessed with a social media influencer named Taylor (played by Elizabeth Olsen), and moves to Los Angeles to try to befriend her. The movie is a dark comedy that explores themes of social media, identity, and obsession, while also featuring a sweet and unexpected romance.

“The Big Sick” (2017):

This movie follows the story of a Pakistani-American comedian named Kumail (played by Kumail Nanjiani) and a white woman named Emily (played by Zoe Kazan) who fall in love, only to have their relationship tested by cultural differences and a medical crisis. The movie is based on the true story of Nanjiani’s own courtship with his wife, and features a heartfelt and honest portrayal of modern love.

“The One I Love” (2014):

This movie tells the story of a couple (played by Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss) who go on a weekend retreat to try to save their marriage, only to encounter some unexpected and surreal twists. The movie is a quirky and inventive take on the romantic comedy genre, featuring strong performances and a surprising story.

“500 Days of Summer” (2009):

This movie follows the story of a young man named Tom (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls in love with a woman named Summer (played by Zooey Deschanel), only to discover that she does not believe in love. The movie is a bittersweet and unconventional romantic comedy that explores the highs and lows of modern relationships.

FADE OUT

These movies demonstrate that a low budget does not limit the creativity or appeal of a romantic comedy, and that great stories can be told with simple settings, strong performances, and a focus on character and emotion.

The challenge is simple:

Choose a genre. Examine a commercially successful film in the genre that appeals to you. And learn!

There are several types of stories that

British Columbia is facing an acute shortage of property managers as a growing number of people make their homes in strata properties.

More than 1.5 million people are estimated to live in B.C.’s 30,000 strata properties.

But finding people to manage those properties is getting increasingly difficult, according B.C.’s Condominium Home Owners Association (CHOA).

“We could easily use 200 or 300 managers in the industry tomorrow and it probably wouldn’t fill the gaps,” CHOA executive director Tony Gioventu told Global News.

“It is getting dire, and it’s not just B.C., it’s across the country.”

In British Columbia, strata property managers must be licensed, a process that involves passing an exam and a criminal record check.

But the process doesn’t end there. Because the job is so complex, licensees still need another six months to a year of training and supervision before they’re prepared to manage on their own, according to those inside the industry.

Along with the basics of building operations and maintenance, mangers must also be familiar with a stack of regulations and legislation, including the B.C. Strata Act, the Residential Tenancy Act, the B.C. Human Rights Code, strata bylaws and B.C.’s civil resolution tribunal.

“We can’t just go out to the street and say hey, you look like a great strata manager and start them tomorrow. What we need to do is have more people licensed,” Chris Churchill, president of FirstService Residential said.

“Once they’re licensed, they still can’t manage properties. They still need at least six months to a year actively managing either in a mentorship or a training program … and what that does is allow someone to properly manage properties in a full capacity.”

Churchill said the industry is already operating at about 50 per cent capacity. Making matters worse, about half of the province’s current crop of strata managers are baby boomers who are within five years of retirement, he said.

On top of that, managers are dealing with new complications like the province’s move to allow rental in most strata properties, all while the size of buildings increases.

Those larger buildings mean mangers who could traditionally take on a portfolio of up to a dozen smaller properties are limited to handling four or five.

The result is a growing number of strata corporations who simply don’t have a manager, leaving the job in the hands of their strata council or volunteers.

“What ends up happening is you have improper maintenance, deferred maintenance, the buildings simply aren’t being upkept the way they should be, because they don’t have that voice of experience helping them out,” he said.

Both Churchill and Gioventu say the industry needs help with recruitment and training if the problem is to be solved.

“We need the help to be able to attract people to this industry so that all of these beautiful buildings going up can have proper representation,” Churchill said.

“We also need help with education. The buildings going up are much more complex, so we need help to get new strata managers up and going … and lastly we need training grants.”

Gioventu said he’d like to see a program added to one of B.C.’s technical colleges that educates and trains strata property managers before they take their licensing exam, so that they’re job ready day one.

“We need to find a way of capturing graduates whoa re coming out of high school and are looking for a career choice,” he said. “This is really a great career, but it needs to be well supported.”

B.C. Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon was not available for an interview on the topic.

In a statement, B.C.’s Ministry of Housing said the shortage of managers existed prior to the province’s changes around strata rental restrictions, but said it was monitoring the new regulations implementation and their effects.

It’s the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off reunion we didn’t know we needed. The stars of the classic 1986 film, Alan Ruck and Matthew Broderick, who played Cameron Frye and Ferris Bueller, respectively, posed for some fun snapshots at Monday’s Season 4 premiere of Succession. In the photo booth pics, which were shared by HBO and can be seen below, the goofy pals laughed and smiled as they posed together, with Alan being a jokester in the last photo as he leaned his head on Matthew’s shoulder and pet him.

Alan, 66, plays Connor Roy in Succession, which is wrapping up an uber-successful run on HBO Max with its fourth season. The premiere took place at New York City’s Lincoln Center and allowed Alan’s co-star  Sarah Snook to announce her pregnancy. Matthew, 61, isn’t in the series but decided to show up and support his longtime pal. Perhaps, Alan will arrive at the premiere of Matthew’s upcoming film with Jennifer Lawrence, No Hard Feelings, when it premieres later this year.

The dynamic duo has been the best of friends even before starring as besties on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in the ’80s. Before that, they costarred in a Broadway production of Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues. Luckily for fans, and the two friends, there may be a chance for them to reunite outside the photobooth and back on the big screen.

In 2020, the Spin City star proposed a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spinoff.  “There are always little rumors, and different writers will come up to [me] at parties or awards shows and say, ‘I’ve got a great idea, and then you never hear anything more about it,’” he confessed on People TV’s Couch Surfing. “Back in the day, John Hughes talked to Matthew briefly about maybe having Ferris go to college. I always thought they should wait until Matthew and I are in our 70s. Cameron’s in a nursing home, and Ferris comes and breaks him out!”

Last year, Variety confirmed that Paramount Pictures is creating a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spinoff that follows the two valets who took Cameron’s dad’s vehicle for a joyride. However, neither Alan nor Matthew is involved. Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg — the filmmakers behind Cobra Kai — will be producing.

Andrea Reeb, the New Mexico state representative who recently stepped down as special prosecutor on the upcoming “Rust” criminal trial against Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, wrote in emails sent to the Santa Fe district attorney last fall and acquired by The New York Times that she believed working on the case could help her electoral campaign.

Reeb was selected by DA Mary Carmack-Altwies last June to handle criminal charges related to the accidental death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin, the actor-producer who was holding the gun that fired and killed Hutchins, and Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for “Rust,” both face charges of involuntary manslaughter that, if convicted, could come with an 18-month prison sentence.

At the time, Reeb was also running as a Republican for a seat in the New Mexico House of Representatives in the November midterm elections. New emails, which were acquired by the New York Times via a request under the state’s Inspection of Public Records Act, showed that Reeb told Carmack-Altwies when she was hired that she understood the DA’s decision not to inform the press about her appointment.

“At some point though,” Reeb wrote, “I’d at least like to get out there that I am assisting you … as it might help in my campaign lol.”

Reeb, who was running in a solid GOP-controlled district, easily won her election and was part of the team that brought the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed while striking a plea deal with “Rust” assistant director David Halls.

But Reeb’s position as prosecutor was challenged by Baldwin’s attorneys, who argued that her double role as elected legislator and special prosecutor was a violation of New Mexico’s state constitution as she was holding power in two different legislative branches. Reeb was also criticized by legal experts for her decision to bring an “enhancement charge” against Baldwin, which could have raised his prison sentence if convicted to five years but which was based in state law that was passed after Hutchins’ death occurred.

The enhancement charge was dropped, and this past week Reeb announced that she would step down from the case, saying that she believed her presence was becoming too much of a distraction as pre-trial hearings continued.

“I will not allow questions about my serving as a legislator and prosecutor to cloud the real issue at hand,” Reeb said in a statement announcing her departure from the case.

In a statement to the Times, Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney Jason Bowles said that the uncovered emails show a “troubling picture of a prosecution that worried less about the law and facts than they did about wanting the limelight for personal political purposes.”

TheWrap has reached out to the New Mexico DA’s office for comment.

LUCKY HANK

Section: TV Premieres

Director: Peter Farrelly

Logline: Lucky Hank is a mid-life crisis tale set at Railton College, told in the first person by William Henry Devereaux, Jr. (Bob Odenkirk), the unlikely chairman of the English department in a badly underfunded college in a working-class American town.

Panelists: Bob Odenkirk, Mireille Enos, Paul Lieberstein, and Mark Johnson

Premiered: March 11, 2023

Key Quote: Odenkirk: “We can expect in the first season of Lucky Hank on AMC, to begin to see Hank fall apart—hilariously. When I did Fargo, I was asking why that was such a great part. And it’s because that character had a little bit of self-awareness and he was trying to hide it and cover it up until he couldn’t anymore. There’s something great about that journey where a character you meet is funny or in this case, he’s kind of a crabby, funny guy, and you start to become aware that he’s emotionally falling apart—and the character is also aware of it. He feels as if his world is coming unmoored and he’s sympathetic.”

Johnson: “It’s a free adaptation of Richard Russo’s book Straight Man, who I’ve known for some time. He’s not precious about the book at all. He said, ‘Take the character and do whatever you want with him.’ I know Bob had a conversation with him early on and they talked about Hank.”

The Deadline Studio at SXSW runs March 10-13, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup sit down with Deadline’s festival team to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Austin, Texas.

Amanda Bynes was seen having a night out in Hollywood on St Patrick’s Day on Friday – less than two days before she was placed on a psychiatric hold.

The troubled actress, 36, was hospitalized after she was seen walking near downtown Los Angeles early on Sunday morning without any clothes on – she was later placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold.

Exclusive DailyMail.com video shows the She’s The Man star clad in a black tee with a bone design, paired with joggers and sneakers as she walks with a friend on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, March 17.

The actress appears coherent as she chats with her friend on the night out, recorded less than two days before she would be found wandering naked and alone in the midst of a ‘psychotic episode’ and hours before she canceled a scheduled public appearance on Saturday.

The star was also captured on a fan’s TikTok, which was captioned: ‘Happy shes getting the help she needs. she was sweet, gave her some money and talked. sometime ppl just need sb to talk to. ‘

In the clip, the fan says ‘I saw her walking and had to say what’s up?’ as Amanda says: ‘What’s up.’

Bynes’ former fiancé Paul Michael claims she had gone ‘off her meds’ before she was put on a psychiatric hold.

Paul, who has been in an on-off relationship with Amanda since they broke off their engagement last July before getting back together a month later, told Page Six: ‘She got off her meds, and she’s still off her meds… She’s wild.’

Paul added he and Amanda are ‘friends now’, after it was reported they had been living together in LA.

Amanda previously accused Paul on her Instagram of not ‘taking his medications,’ relapsing with ‘crack cocaine’ and watching ‘mom-and-son porn’ before she ‘kicked him out’ of her house.

He added: ‘(Amanda) tried to kick me out, but I left to get my own place.

I moved home and established boundaries.’

Paul also insisted Amanda ‘lied’ about her previous drug use and pornography accusations against him, claiming she ’embarrassed’ him in order ‘to keep the attention off her.’

He said: ‘She acted to shame me away,’ adding Amanda ‘lied and cheated and had too many flings the entire time’ they were together.

Bynes and Michael famously got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2020, mere months after staying at the same sober living facility.

On Sunday Bynes is said to have waved a car down, telling a driver she was ‘coming down from a psychotic episode’ before she called 911.

Bynes was taken to a police station where a mental health team placed her on a 5150 psychiatric hold.

A 5150 is a legal action from the CA Welfare and Institutions Code. It allows a qualified officer or clinician to confine someone against their will for 72 hours which can be extended. During this time, the person will be fully assessed for their mental health status.

Bynes is currently hospitalized and will likely receive care for several days. She is not believed to have been hurt during the incident.

DailyMail.com contacted Bynes’ representative for comment.

This comes after the actress pulled out of  reuniting with the rest of the All That cast at ’90s Con on Saturday, citing an ‘unknown illness’, according to That’s 4 Entertainment.

At the last minute, the actress, who previously expressed her eagerness to reconnect with her former Nickelodeon castmates at the event, had to cancel.

Her attendance at the highly-anticipated reunion, alongside Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Danny Tamberelli and Lori Beth Denberg, would have marked her first public appearance since the end of her eight-year conservatorship in March 2022.

She has yet to publicly address the health concern that prevented her from going, but just two months ago, she told People that she was ‘really excited to reunite with’ her ‘cast mates and meet the fans’ 23 years after the original show ended.

The performer starred on the sketch comedy show from 1996 to 2000 alongside  Mitchell, 44, Tamberelli, 40, and Denberg, 46.

All That was created by Brian Robbins and Mike Tollin and originally aired on Nickelodeon from April 16, 1994, to October 22, 2005, lasting ten seasons.

The series, which was billed as ‘SNL for kids’ boasted short comedy sketches and musical guests.

In 2019 a revival of the series with original cast member Kenan Thompson serving as executive producer and Mitchell rejoining the cast was confirmed, with the 11th season airing in June of that year.

The last episode of the series aired on December 17, 2020, after production was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It launched Bynes into her noughties romcom era, before the embattled star stepped away from acting.

Sources close to the star have told TMZ that she an Michael are only dating after calling off their engagement over the summer.

Rumors of their latest reunion first arose earlier in October of 2022 when the Nickelodeon star shared a mysterious image of herself holding hands with Paul Michael – who could be recognized by his distinctive tattoos – on her Instagram Story.

The cozy photo came nearly two months after news first broke that the pair had ended their two-year engagement.

The subtle hint of Amanda’s photo featured Paul’s tattooed grip holding on to her heavily manicured hand.

Neither appeared to be wearing any rings on their hands following news on July 8 that they had ended their engagement ‘sometime in 2021.’

‘They are still together as a couple,’ an insider stressed to ET at the time of their supposed split. ‘They are still in a committed relationship and take their relationship seriously.’

On April 28, the Easy A alum called 911 on the healthcare worker during a dispute over him relapsing. She accused him of vandalizing his mother’s home, looking at MILF porn, and being off his meds.

Aside from Amanda’s busy love life, the star has also reportedly been developing a ‘fragrance line’ as she pursues another degree at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising after earning her associate’s degree there in 2019.

In March of 2022, Bynes was freed of her nine-year legal conservatorship controlled by her mother Lynn.

Amanda’s conservatorship began in 2013 when she was involuntarily committed to a Pasadena psychiatric treatment facility following a public meltdown involving a string of bizarre run-ins with the law dating back to 2012.

Bynes’ offenses were two hit-and-runs and a DUI in 2012, as well as a 2013 arrest for throwing a bong out of a window of the 36th floor of her Manhattan apartment.

Bynes’ parents Lynn and Rick are reportedly not planning to put her back in a conservatorship despite her purported mental health woes.

However her family is said to have taken note of the fact that she realized she was unwell and sought treatment herself, reports TMZ.

Amanda Bynes was seen having a night

A trip to Paris should be on everyone’s bucket list, even John Wick. The Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre — what better way to refresh your soul, even as you kick everyone else’s bucket?

The un-retired assassin does indeed dive into the City of Lights in the inventive and thrilling “John Wick: Chapter 4” a sequel which elevates and expands the franchise. The fourth installment is more stylish, more elegant and more bonkers — kind of like Paris itself.

When we last saw Wick, he was half dead in the gutter after being shot and tumbling several stories off the Hotel Continental in New York. He was on the blacklist with a $14 million price on his head. (Inflation has even hit this franchise: The bounty swells to $40 million by the end of part four.)

Wick, as always played with monosyllabic and brooding intensity by Keanu Reeves, leaves his customary trail of death, but there’s a shift here. So often the prey in the previous movies, Wick is on the offense in the fourth, taking his demands directly to The High Table, the group of shadowy crime lords that keep order.

This time, the Table’s sadistic frontman is a dandy called the Marquis, played with coiled menace by Bill Skarsgård, who spouts things like: “Second chances are the refuge of men who fail.” But he’s a secret coward, so feel free to boo loudly.

The nine-fingered Wick wants to end his nightmare, naturally, by killing everyone. His too-cool frenemy, Ian McShane’s Winston, challenges him to think differently: “Have you learned nothing?” he asks the man who, to be honest, he shot in the last movie. “You’ll run out of bullets before they run out of heads.”

Returning writer Shay Hatten, along with co-writer Michael Finch, have come up with a possible solution for Wick: Win an old-fashioned duel with the Marquis. Win and be free, lose and be buried.

#JohnWick4 – Only in theatres and Imax March 24. Starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins and Ian McShane.

Not so fast, of course. Along the way, Wick must somehow handle the blind martial arts master Caine, played by Donnie Yen, bringing humor and verve to a fighter who is tasked with either slaying his one-time friend or have his daughter killed.

There’s also Killa, a jumbo-sized card shark played by martial arts star Scott Adkins, and The Tracker, a very talented bounty hunter played by Shamier Anderson. Don’t forget a swarm of Paris-based amateur bounty-hunters and armored ninjas who seem as plentiful as the city’s baguettes.

All the touches you expect from a Wick flick are here — a cool dog, hand-to-hand combat amid glass display cases, candles and Christian iconography, galloping horses, the screech of metal swords and a new way to hurt someone, in this case, a single playing card. We visit Germany, Japan and end in France, even going to a disused subway platform.

Returning director Chad Stahelski loves combining neon with gloom and now has the budget to rent out space in the Louvre. Of the 14 action sequences — yes, 14 — a few are truly mind-blowing, like a fight in the middle of the traffic circle around the Arc de Triomphe and a drone capturing a complicated set piece in a building involving what is being called a dragon’s breath shotgun. Repeating that last bit: dragon’s breath shotgun.

If there was a bit of a slog through would-be assassins in “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum” — you know, shoot, stab, repeat — there is none here. One sequence on a set of outdoor stairs in Paris is almost riotously funny as knives and guns blast away, while the filmmakers add water and fire to a nightclub rave scene that puts clueless dancers next to axe-throwing murderers.

A shout-out to costume designer Paco Delgado, who has outfitted the baddie gunmen in light-colored three-piece suits and combat boots, and the executive baddies in fitted elegance with extravagant cravat-style ties. One of the film’s saddest parts is saying goodbye to Lance Reddick, who played Continental Hotel concierge Charon and died on the eve of the movie’s debut.

How does this all end? Actually, on something of a deflating note. Earlier in the film, Wick’s Japan-based friend Shimazu — played awesomely by Hiroyuki Sanada — had asked a question that eternally hangs over this franchise: “Have you given any thought to how this ends?”

This chapter ends in death, of course. But that’s also how it lives.

“John Wick: Chapter 4,” a Lionsgate release that hits theaters Friday, is rated R for “pervasive strong violence and some language.” Running time: 169 minutes.
