Matt Damon revealed he is in the early stages of research in a documentary project tackling the war in Ukraine at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday.

The Jason Bourne actor and producer was at the festival as one of the producers on Kiss The Future.

The documentary revisits the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s through the prism of U2’s solidarity with the city’s besieged citizens as well as its underground music scene. Watch the first trailer here.

Asked at the press conference whether he could see himself getting involved in a documentary on the war in Ukraine, in the vein of Sean Penn’s Superpower, Damon revealed he was researching a potential project.

The actor-producer said he had not had direct exchanges with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy but had met his wife Olena Zelenska at the U.N. Assembly last year.

“I think a lot of wonderful films are being made about it now. I’m sure there will be many, many more going forward. We don’t have anything on right now… although we actually do have somebody over there researching one but it’s in its early stages.

Damon boarded Kiss The Future under the banner of his former joint company with Ben Affleck, Pearl Street Films, having been approached by Yugoslavia-born Canadian, San Francisco-based director Nenad Cicin-Sain at the development stage.

He said he had been “intuitively” drawn to the project in the same way he selects roles as an actor. He said he had been “a sounding board” at the editing stage.

“Nenad is very humble, but it was a very, very personal story for him and to listen to him talk about it, it was really impossible for us not to want to be involved,” Damon explained.

Cicin-Sain said he had been drawn to the story of the U2 concert as a way to re-explore what had happened in Sarajevo after seeing a “re-flaring” of nationalism in the region in recent years.

An obstacle to the idea was that very little footage exists of the event. Cicin-Sain, who had worked with Damon and Affleck on other projects, knew Damon was friends with Bono and thought he might be able to help facilitate access.

Damon emphasized that Cicin-Sain along with screenwriter Bill S. Carter, producer Sarah Anthony at Los Angeles-based Good Wolves Productions, Pearl Street EVP Drew Vinton and editor Eric Burton had been the real drivers of the final film.

“It was a very hard production for the people who were day to day on it, Sarah, Eric, for all these people who like grinding and grinding in the edit. For me, I would get these cuts. Each cut I would watch was better than the last cut and it just kept getting better and better. It was exactly what he [Nenad] said he was going to do,” recalled Damon.

“We would get on the phone and talk for an hour or two. Really, he was using me as a sounding board at that point. It’s like, you get so close to a movie. Terrence Malick could call it ‘getting snowblind’ where you’re just you’re so deep in the edit, it’s very hard to see what you’re at.”

Damon said he was open to getting behind other documentaries but that they had to be projects he really believed in.

“This one just kind of came to me. It was a real blessing. It just it’s an incredible story… that these incredible people opened up and let us help tell it and were open with us, and these interviews that were just amazing. Their willingness and their vulnerability. That’s really what this was about,” he said.

“Our interests are in making things like this, but there’s not an overarching strategy… as we see these great stories we’ll do our best to facilitate the people who can tell them really, really well.”

Bono, who features prominently in the film has been confirmed for the red carpet on Sunday evening but did not participate in the press conference.

In the Alex Gibney documentary “Boom! Boom: The World vs. Boris Becker,” the then-active tennis player recalls a 1980s conversation with a tabloid newspaper editor who told him that only three subjects were guaranteed to get the German public’s attention: Adolf Hitler, German reunification and Boris Becker.

Released from prison in the U.K. in December, Becker turned up in person in Berlin on Sunday to attend a press conference. Once again he dominated the court. Quotable, self-deprecating and larger than life, Becker maintained the candor that was characteristic of the multiple interviews he gave to filmmaker Alex Gibney — himself a tennis player and Becker admirer.

“I’m a huge fan. I watched him during his tennis playing days and listened to his commentary on the BBC,” said Gibney. “The talent that Boris has, unlike many great athletes, is his ability as a storyteller. My opportunity to tell the story and [Becker’s] ability as a storyteller to tell his own story, that was hugely exciting to me.”

The film, presented at Berlin is already feature-length, but is the first part of a two-episode work that stops when Becker is at the height of his playing career. It ends abruptly, explaining that the seeds of Becker’s self-destruction have all been identified in the previous 100 minutes and the star’s trajectory is downhill from then on. It will air on Apple TV+.

At Sunday’s event — just as in the remarkable interviews he gave Gibney for “Boom! Boom!” — Becker was neither shy, nor evasive.

“I’m the last person to complain about my life. I’m 55 years old and I’m very proud of the things that I’ve done. But I’ve made mistakes,” Becker said. “It is very difficult to win Wimbledon at age 17. You have to be a bit crazy. Borderline. Crossing the line. Doing things that nobody has done before in order to achieve something nobody has achieved before. To have that mindset and live a normal lifestyle is almost impossible. And when the going gets tough I usually get better, I’m not afraid of a tie break, I’m not afraid of a final. But in real life that is a problem sometimes.

“I’ve paid a heavy price for some of the things I did in my past. Today I’m a bit better for it. Hopefully a bit smarter. Maybe a bit more humble.”

The film’s first series of interviews were conducted in 2019 when Gibney toured Wimbledon with Becker and gave the filmmaker a grand tour. “The pandemic intervened. We began to edit,” said Gibney.
The second interview was just two days before Boris was sentenced and taken to prison in 2022 over charges relating to his 2017 bankruptcy case. Becker is shown red-eyed, but still as hard-hitting as his famous serve.

“It was a very powerful and emotional interview. It caused me to reconsider the structure and essential elements of the film. Documentary is like a fiction film except you write the script at the end instead of the beginning,” Gibney shot.

“[It was] a time when I really didn’t know what the rest of my life would look like,” Becker volleyed.

Asked by a reporter to name his favorite movies, Becker named Sean Penn, Jack Nicolson, James Dean and Marlon Brando, actors rather than titles. “They are all a bit rebellious. I like them,” Becker said with a twinkle. “My life seems like a movie sometimes. Only it is real.”

Gibney kept the rally going. “We wanted to take [the story] out of the genteel world of the tennis club and put it in the dusty world of the gunslinger. So we used some of Ennio Morricone’s scores from Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns to give it that mano a mano vibe.”

Becker remains tabloid fodder — headlines on Sunday had his ex-wife calling him a “devil” — but the star was as cool as a Wimbledon cucumber sandwich. “It feels great to be free and at peace with myself. We all have to try to be our better selves.”

The series is a co-production between John Battsek’s Ventureland and Gibney’s Jigsaw Prods., from Lorton Entertainment.

Milo Ventimiglia in The Company You Keep;

SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! When you’re at the end of your rope and life has shoved you into the corner, the only people you can count on is family. One such story is Sean McEwen’s thriller, American Outlaws, based on the true 2012 story of the Dougherty Gang.

The Dougherty Gang is made up of older brother Dylan (Emory Cohen) and his twin siblings Lee Grace (India Eisley) and Ryan (Sam Strike). Ryan finds himself in serious trouble. His girlfriend is about to have a baby, and he’s about to return to prison for a parole violation. Now add Dylan, who has a go-nowhere life, and former stripper and drug addict Lee Grace. Dylan proposes that the three siblings just “go.” Just leave the country and head south to Costa Rica.

With a little convincing and a strong sibling bond, Lee Grace and Ryan agreed. The plan is to slip out of their hometown of Lacoochee, Florida, and make their way to the Mexico border. Dylan draws up several rules for this plan to work, like staying by the car, doing as he says without question, and finally, drawing no attention. Ryan blows that last one within hours as the cops are chasing our heroes for speeding so much for slipping out of town.

In need of money, the Dougherties rob a bank with Lee Grace toting an AK 47. Though they get away with it, the authorities have been alerted and slowly catching up to them. They then take to small-time larceny by robbing an elderly couple and a family on a camping trip. Dylan assures them they’ll make it to the border.

American Outlaws is a low-budget indie film that looks like a big-budget Hollywood feature. However, writer/director Sean McEwen knows how to shoot an action thriller from close-up camera angles on his cast and that rust-colored daytime temperature film that makes everything look like it was shot during magic hours. These close-up shots elevate the action sequences during the car chases and shoot-outs…again that’s how it’s done on the cheap, and it looks incredible.

“Dylan proposes that the three siblings just ‘go.’ Just leave the country and head south to Costa Rica.”

Another star is the story. Based on Kathy Dobie’s GQ article, “The Whole True Story of the Dougherty Gang,” American Outlaws paints an incredibly sympathetic portrait of a family that wants to rise above their hopeless situation as a lower-middle-class family eaten up by the recession of the 2010s. They want to escape in hopes of a better life away from the United States. None of them wants to hurt anyone…they just want to go.

INDIE FILMMAKERS TAKE NOTE: One device that director McEwen employs is interweaving the narrative with actual news reports about the Dougherties from local and national news channels. This trick effectively adds immediate context as the story rolls along and plays well in the “where are they now” end credits.

To pull off this story, McEwen casts his Dougherty family in Emory Cohen, India Eisley, and Sam Strike. Heck, they even look like siblings. The cast nails down a specific dynamic to this family perfectly. The three are young, immature adults who act more out of desperation than malice. They are also incredibly flawed but brilliantly developed characters making one wrong decision after the other while wanting their true kind nature to come out yet forced to turn to their violent nature to escape. We have the makings of true anti-heroes. I couldn’t help but root for their escape while praying they wouldn’t pull that trigger, sealing their fate.

I should probably address the “inspired by real events.” I never read Dobie’s article, nor did I have any knowledge of this story until now. My guess is with McEwen’s slick action-thriller vibe to American Outlaws that, a lot of liberties were taken facts-wise. Except for the actual news reports, it feels like a Hollywood thriller. I still debate over whether there should be a line between cinematic storytelling and docudrama. Debating aside, American Outlaws is a helluva thriller, and I suppose that’s what counts in the end…it’s a fun movie.

Ultimately, I highly recommend Sean McEwen’s sophomore feature film, American Outlaws. It’s clear he’s a fan of action movies, and American Outlaws looks like a big Hollywood film…done on the cheap. From the pace to its swagger to its tone, McEwen is an action director in the making. However, his most incredible feat is making up care about and feel sympathy for his criminal protagonists to the point that I was rooting against the cops until the very end.

SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW!

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” star Evangeline Lilly is speaking up about her stance on mandated COVID vaccinations, telling Esquire that the backlash she received after attending an anti-vax rally in Washington D.C. in January 2022 was something she fully expected.

Back in 2022, Lilly revealed on Instagram that she was among the protesters at a rally in Washington opposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates. The post included black-and-white pictures taken at what appeared to be the same rally where Robert F. Kennedy Jr. compared vaccine mandates to the Holocaust.

At the time she remembered thinking, “’I know the beast that I’m attacking. I know that I have a little pebble and there’s this f–ing Goliath giant. If I shoot this pebble, it’s going to wake the giant.’”

In the new interview, Lilly explained her intentions behind attending the rally and to make it known that she was there.

“I just wanted people out there who were struggling because they were under severe pressure to do something they didn’t want to do to know that they weren’t alone, to know that there were people who actually felt they had a right to say no,” she said.

Lilly said she had already gotten a taste of the controversy she would face from another social media post she’d made two years earlier.

In March 2020, at the height of lockdowns and quarantines, she shared a picture of herself after taking her children to gymnastics with the caption, “#businessasusual.”

“I didn’t expect anyone to pay attention to it, because no one ever pays attention to what I post,” she explained.

“I ended up having enough people say to me, ‘Well, there’s a lot of people who are dying right now, and it might have been really insensitive to what they’re going through,’ and that resonated for me,” prompting her to post an apology 10 days later.

“Ant-Man: Quantumania” premieres in theaters this weekend. You can read TheWrap’s interview with Lilly here.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have been named the best theatrical-film directors of 2022 by the Directors Guild of America, which presented its 75th annual DGA Awards on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.

The two directors, who go by the name The Daniels, won for the freewheeling “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” topping Steven Spielberg for “The Fabelmans,” Martin McDonagh for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Todd Field for “Tar” and Joseph Kosinski for “Top Gun: Maverick.” They are only the third directing team to win the DGA Award, after the Coen brothers for “No Country for Old Men” and Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for “West Side Story.”

Spielberg, who is both the most-nominated and winningest film director in DGA history with 13 nominations and three wins, was the sentimental favorite going into the show, but “Everything Everywhere” has proven to be a surprisingly potent awards contender. The DGA win gives the Daniels’ real momentum going into next weekend’s Producers Guild Awards. A victory there would make their film an even stronger Oscar frontrunner despite its seemingly divisive nature with older voters.

In the DGA’s theatrical feature film category, the guild’s winner has gone on to win the Best Director Oscar 66 times in the previous 74 years. Four of those mismatches have come in this century, most recently with “1917” director Sam Mendes, who won the DGA Award in 2020 but lost the Oscar to Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite.”

All of this year’s DGA nominees also have Oscar nominations for directing except Kosinski, who was replaced on the Academy’s slate by Ruben Ostlund for “Triangle of Sadness.”

The award for documentary director went to Sara Dosa for “Fire of Love,” which the first-time feature director prize, which has been named after the late director Michael Apted, went to Charlotte Wells for “Aftersun.”

Sam Levinson won the award for Drama Series for “Euphoria” over episodes of “Ozark,” “Better Call Saul” and “Severance,” while the Comedy Series award went to Bill Hader for “Barry” over episodes of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Wednesday,” “The White Lotus” and “The Bear.”

In the Movies for Television and Limited Series category, Helen Shaver won for “Station Eleven” in a field that also included “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Inventing Anna” and another episode of “Station Eleven.”

Other television winners included “Saturday Night Live,” “Running Wild With Bear Grylls,” Best Foot Forward” and the 75th Tony Awards.

Special achievement awards went to Mark Hansson (Frank Capra Achievement Award), Valdez Flagg (Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award) and Robert A. Fishman (Lifetime Achievement Award in Television).

Judd Apatow hosted the ceremony, which took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and came in at a relatively brisk three hours. It was brisk, at least, for the notoriously long-winded DGA, which benefited from fact that several winners and nominees, including Martin McDonagh, Charlotte Wells and Bill Hader weren’t present to give speeches. (McDonagh and Wells were no doubt in or en route to London, where they’re nominees at Sunday’s BAFTA awards.)

Gulabo Sitabo

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Ayushmann Khurrana, Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala

Director: Shoojit Sircar

A crabby landlord, a defiant tenant, a crumbling mansion. Shoojit Sircar’s new film Gulabo Sitabo, set in the old city of Lucknow, puts the ordinariness of everyday life at the center of its story. The film is a tragi-comedy about two men who essentially want the same thing – the security and permanence of owning their homes – yet they fail to empathize with each other’s situation.

Named after a street puppet show that’s especially popular in Uttar Pradesh, in which two female glove puppets bicker incessantly, the film stars Amitabh Bachchan as the perpetually grouchy Mirza who has little patience with the five families that pay a pittance as rent to live in his large but dilapidated haveli. The bulk of his scorn is reserved for Baankey Rastogi (Ayushmann Khurrana), a cocky fellow whose family has been squatting for nearly 70 years, unwilling to increase the rent or vacate the premises.

There are many laughs to be had at Mirza and Baankey’s clashes, both of whom are cash-strapped and frustrated. Mirza steals Baankey’s lightbulbs and sells them for odd change; Baankey tricks him into digging under the house for gold. The older man, in particular, is driven by greed. He’s not an especially likeable character, and remarkably Bachchan never makes a play for your sympathy. As if to offset his hurtful taunting, his unending pettiness, and his strictly selfish interest in his ageing wife, we get a moment in which Mirza says: “Beintehaa mohabbat karte hain iss haveli se.” On some level, that’s all writer Juhi Chaturvedi gives us to negotiate how we feel about him.

Shoojit and cameraman Avik Mukopadhyay create a lived-in world that feels entirely authentic. This is not a travel-brochure version of Lucknow; and the haveli in question, Fatima Mahal, is so poorly maintained it’s no surprise a brick wall caves in from a single kick. This texture goes a long way in giving us a sense of the people who live here – desperately poor, and in fact desperate. Some, like Mirza’s wife Begum (played by Farrukh Jafar) who inherited the home from her family, have chosen to cut off for the most part. Others like Guddo, the oldest of Baankey’s three sisters (played by an excellent Srishti Shrivastava) make all manner of efforts to find a better life.

The laidback narrative gathers some urgency with the arrival of Vijay Raaz’s character Gyanesh Shukla, an officer in the archeological research centre who becomes obsessed with proving that the 100-year-old haveli is heritage property and ought to be sealed. There is also Brijendra Kala as Christopher Clarke, a lawyer who specializes in property-related matters like evictions and transfer of ownership. Both actors are in terrific form.

The problem with the film is that although the characters have depth and personality, the pace is so meditative, and the plot so sparse that it’s hard to become invested in what’s going on with these folks. Not a lot happens until the end in Gulabo Sitabo, making its two-hour running time a test of your patience. In Shoojit’s last film October, the pace was crucial to the experience of the film, which was about friends and family waiting around helplessly for a young girl to pull out of a coma.

Buried somewhere under the laughs in this film is a feeling of unmistakable sadness about the greed and the desperation that poverty can breed. But it’s weighed down by a frankly inert screenplay that never succeeds in making you truly care for its protagonists. It’s as if there’s a distance between us and them.

Which is a shame because there is a lot to appreciate in Gulabo Sitabo, chief among them Amitabh Bachchan’s winning portrayal of Mirza. Hunched over, dressed in filthy kurtas and too-short pyjamas, sporting a Santa beard and a potato-sized nose, Bachchan vanishes into the part. Mirza is single-minded to the point of being unscrupulous and the actor never holds back. Ayushmann sportingly lets his co-star do the heavy lifting, while nicely bringing out Baankey’s tough-on-the-outside-but-vulnerable-on-the-inside personality.

The film also comes with the subtle but admirable message of communal harmony, and the not-so-subtle but equally important evidence of just how the poor are frequently exploited.

Gulabo Sitabo is most enjoyable when Bachchan eats up the scenery lobbing insults as Mirza. He is the best thing in a sadly disappointing film.

I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five.

Comparisons between Superman: Legacy and the Cavill’s Superman will be inevitable, but one character can set the Superman reboot apart from the DCEU.

Superman: Legacy, DC Studios’ upcoming Superman movie reboot, is bound to be compared with the DCEU’s Superman series – but one character can set this new franchise apart from the previous one. The first DC Studios project announced by James Gunn, Superman: Legacy is set to premiere on July 11, 2025, bringing a new actor as the Man of Steel. Superman: Legacy won’t have any connections to Henry Cavill’s version of the character, and it will kick off the new DC Universe.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

By the time Superman: Legacy hit theaters, Henry Cavill’s final appearance as the Man of Steel during Black Adam’s post-credits scene will have been almost three years ago. Still, Cavill was the movie version of Superman for almost a decade, starting his run in the Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel (2013) and reprising his role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Black Adam. Therefore, comparisons between James Gunn’s Superman reboot and the Snyderverse’s Man of Steel are going to be inevitable.

James Gunn’s Superman Reboot Needs Jimmy Olsen

Jimmy Olsen from a DC comic.

Superman: Legacy can set itself apart from the Snyderverse’s Superman by incorporating a key Superman character that the DCEU overlooked – Jimmy Olsen. One of Clark Kent’s best friends in the comics, James Olsen is as important to Superman’s mythos as Lois Lane or the Daily Planet, yet he was never given too much attention on the big screen. Jimmy Olsen is often associated with the more lighthearted, sometimes comedic side of Superman’s lore, which poses a challenge when it comes to adapting the Man of Steel as a more grounded, serious character. That said, Jimmy Olsen can work perfectly fine in a Superman movie.

Given that Superman: Legacy will follow a younger Superman at an early stage of his career, the DCU Superman reboot is the perfect opportunity to incorporate the iconic photographer. According to James Gunn, Clark Kent will be working at the Daily Planet in Superman: Legacy, meaning that Superman’s supporting set of characters could include Jimmy Olsen. The DCEU adapted several Superman-related characters and storylines, including but not limited to General Zod’s invasion and the death of Superman at the hands of Doomsday. As such, Superman: Legacy and the new DC Universe as a whole must focus on different sides of the Superman lore.

Why Zack Snyder Didn’t Use Jimmy Olsen In The DCEU

Batman v Superman's Jimmy Olsen and Superman

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition introduces a character who goes by James Olsen right at the beginning of the film. That character, however, was not actually James Olsen – he was a CIA agent who used the Daily Planet’s credentials to perform an undercover mission. Still, just the fact that Lois Lane did not know the real Jimmy Olsen of this universe confirmed that Snyder had no plans of using the character as Clark and Lois’ friend at the Daily Planet. During a fan screening of Batman v Superman, Snyder explained that the Jimmy Olsen namedrop was just a way to tease a larger DC world.

The Snyderverse’s plan for Superman was very much a Justice League story involving Darkseid, Apokolips, and time travel. In other words, there would probably not be much time to follow Clark Kent at Metropolis working at the Daily Planet after the first Justice League film as the story would ask more for Superman than for Clark. In addition, Man of Steel tried to redefine Superman for a new generation and introduced new story beats like Lois Lane finding out that Clark Kent was from another planet before they were even friends. It remains to be seen how Superman: Legacy will differ from the previous franchise.

Are we still going to be going to the theater in ten years?

I try to go to the movies every week. For me, it’s like church. It’s a place where I can find myself and center myself. Whether I love what I see or not, it matters to me, and I’m pretty worried about what theaters will do over the next ten years.

Theatrical distribution and exhibition is changing faster than ever before. And movies are changing with it.

The way we consume movies is transforming, and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this shift. Studios have had to rethink how they distribute movies to audiences and whether or not some titles are worth bringing to the big screen.

That scares me.

We’re seeing more movies released on streaming services, and theaters are facing an uncertain future.

So what does the future of theatrical distribution look like?

Let’s dive in.

What’s The Future of Cinema and Theatrical Distribution?

Look, I’m not some genius prognosticator. Most of these ideas are based on articles I’ve read or just conversations with people inside the industry. The future of cinema is likely to be shaped by several factors.

The first one I think matters most is the increased use of streaming services.

The rise of streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ has already had a significant impact on the film industry, and this trend is likely to continue. As more people opt to watch movies from the comfort of their own homes, the traditional movie theater experience may become less popular.

We saw AMC talk about raising prices on different seats, and people immediately responded with the desire to just watch new releases at home.

As an avid VUDU user, I see that more and more titles are coming out to rent at home almost as soon as they hit theaters.

This is changing why people go to the theater. Do they want to see a small family drama there? Or just big titles?

Theaters in the Web 3.0 Era

Another huge factor for the future of theatrical is technology.

Advancements in technology like virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3D will likely change the way movies are made and experienced. Filmmakers may experiment with new ways of storytelling and immersion, which could lead to more interactive and immersive movie experiences.

We have 3D movies like Avatar, which changed the way we experience theaters. Immersive tech, like Occulus, seems like things that may expand how we feel at home, but they could be employed by theaters to make the movie-going experience more fun.

There’s even a push to make screens larger, which is something you definitely could not achieve at home.

Hollywood has slowly started to take notice that diversity and inclusion will bring more people out of their homes to support different titles.

As audiences demand greater diversity and representation in film, we may see more movies made by and for underrepresented groups. This could lead to a greater variety of stories being told and a more inclusive film industry overall. And it could lead to a big box office for those movies.

The Biggest Hurdles for the Future of Theatrical Distribution for Movies?

Of course, to sustain theatrical distribution and exhibition, there will be many hurdles along the way. Hollywood is competing with streaming services for our time. You need time to go to the movies. It’s not as convenient as watching anything at home.

There’s also the problem of piracy, which was much bigger during the DVD sales boom of the early 2000s, but still has a place now when it comes to leaking newer releases.

But, I think the largest hurdle is the rising cost of what it takes to make a movie.

The cost of producing and marketing movies is increasing, making it more difficult for smaller films to secure theatrical distribution. Additionally, the cost of movie tickets is rising, which could discourage some people from going to the theater.

These rising costs keep both audiences away and relegate theatrical movies to ones that have a big enough budget to showcase themselves.

This is also resulting in shorter theatrical windows.

With some studios releasing movies on streaming services and in theaters simultaneously, the traditional theatrical window for movies is shrinking. This could impact the revenue that theaters can generate from ticket sales.

Again, that impacts what movies are made and what studios deem to put in theaters.

Finally, as much as I hate to admit it, I am getting older. While my generation goes to the theater, we’re seeing younger generations preferring to watch things at home or even on their phones.

This changing consumer behavior has thrown a wrench into planning for the theatrical future.

Audience behavior is evolving, and people are consuming media in different ways than they have in the past. For example, younger generations are more likely to stream content and less likely to go to the theater. This shift in behavior could impact the future of theatrical distribution for movies.

Overall, the theatrical distribution of movies faces several challenges, but there are also opportunities for innovation and adaptation in response to changing consumer behavior and technological advancements.

What Will the Movies Look Like in the Future?

Okay, it’s time to make some big swings at what we could see movies becoming. I don’t think this is an overnight move, but I bet in the next ten years we’re going to see much more of this stuff.

It’s going to be shaped by a combination of technology, changing audience behavior, and industry trends.

Firstly, I would be on more hybrid releases.

When COVID hit, studios released movies both in theaters and on streaming services simultaneously. While some were up in arms over it, I think we saw a lot of the future in this strategy. This trend may continue, with studios offering viewers the choice to watch movies in theaters or at home.

We’re also going to need theaters to act more like the revered institutions they are and find ways to make themselves special.

We should have premium amenities, high-quality food and beverage offerings, as well as interactive and immersive technology like virtual reality and augmented reality. Anything to make going to the movies stay special and different than home.

Diversity and representation to ensure all audiences are served. We will continue to need more movies being made by and for underrepresented groups, which could broaden the appeal of cinema.

As well as options for every age group too.

Summing It All Up

Overall, the future of cinema and theatrical distribution is likely to be shaped by a combination of these and other factors. The industry will need to be innovative and adaptable to meet the changing needs and preferences of audiences.

If we want to keep our houses of worship, we’re going to have to bend a bit and change how they’re set up and run.

I’m hoping to go to the theater every week until I die, and I’m hoping that experience is around long after I’m gone.

Let me know your thoughts and predictions in the comments.

Are we still going to be

Nicolas Cage is set to star in the upcoming survival action-thriller Arcadian, which now has a first-look image that teases some of the excitement and characters in the upcoming movie.

Arcadian, which is now currently in post-production after wrapping filming in Ireland, Arcadian is one of many Nicolas Cage movies currently on the slate. While Arcadian has no official release date just yet and is still in the editing phase, one can imagine it may be released at some point in 2023. Currently, this year at least has Cage in the western The Old Way and playing Count Dracula in the promising looking Renfield.

As per the official plot synopsis: “In a post-apocalyptic and sparsely populated world, Paul (Cage) and his twin teenage sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins), have managed to claw out an existence yet they live in constant fear. Until, confronted by imminent danger, they must execute a desperate plan to survive.” Martell may be best known for playing Bill in 2017’s It and its sequel, while Jenkins appeared in 2016’s A Family Man–not to be confused with the Cage-starring The Family Man (2000).

Arcadian is directed by Ben Brewer, who served as a visual effects artist for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Brewer made his directorial debut with 2016’s The Trust, which starred both Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood. Our own Chris Bumbray gave it a respectable 7/10, saying it was “a modest film but a well-crafted one with some good production design…If nothing else, The Trust proves Cage is as engaged as he ever was and seems ripe for a comeback.” This seems promising for Arcadian, which was relatively below the radar until the recently released image. Arcadian, which is written by Michael Nilon, was formerly known as Sand and Stones.

In addition to Arcadian and other aforementioned titles, Cage also has psychological thriller Sympathy for the Devil and horror flick Longlegs on the docket.

Nicolas Cage has a lot of projects lined up, so where does Arcadian rank in your most anticipated Cage movies? Let us know in the comments section below!

Though Marvel fans may best know Evangeline Lilly for her role as Hope van Dyne/The Wasp, the actress auditioned for another iconic superhero before the Ant-Man movies.

While speaking with EW, Lilly reflected on a Wonder Woman audition she did with director Joss Whedon.

“I think my impression, coming away from it, was I had no desire and he could tell,” Lilly explained. “It didn’t appeal and there was nothing about the meeting that like, jazzed me or made me think like, ‘Oh, I’ve gotta do this.’ Nothing clicked. Nothing felt good. I am way too authentic for my own good. I mean, it’s not good. If I am not impressed, you’ll know. And maybe you shouldn’t know sometimes.”

The actress also noted that Whedon may have taken some offense, but that she wasn’t bothered.

“I was okay with that. I was okay with burning bridges. I was okay with not having everyone in Hollywood wanna work with me,” Lilly stated. “I just always had to do what felt right for me. And honestly I wasn’t into superhero movies and that’s the main reason why, in both of these instances, I just kind of felt like I don’t know what I get out of this.”

Wonder Woman would eventually be played by Gal Gadot in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, two solo Wonder Woman films, Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Whether Gadot will reprise the role in further movies or cameos is currently unknown. Wonder Woman was originally set to cameo in The Flash, though there are reports that said cameo has been cut.

Skrillex has surprised fans with another new album, just a day after releasing his Quest for Fire.

The EDM-pop superstar previously revealed that a follow-up LP, dubbed Don’t Get Too Close, was on the way, and during Skrillex’s performance Saturday at New York’s Madison Square Garden, he informed the crowd that the album is out right now; the MSG gig also featured specially made “bootleg CDs” of the new album, which won’t be available anywhere else.

Like Quest for Fire, Don’t Get Too Close is a star-studded affair, comprising recent collaborations and new recordings. This time around, Skrillex has enlisted Kid Cudi (“Summer Time”), Chief Keef, Yung Lean, PinkPantheress & Trippie Redd (“Way Back“), Bibi Bourelly and, on two songs, Bladee, who features on the previously released single “Real Spring”:

Don’t Get Too Close also boasts the 2021 single “Don’t Go” featuring Justin Bieber and Don Toliver, as well as the title track, which showcases Skrillex (a.k.a. Sonny Moore) singing for the first time in eight years.

Quest for Fire marked Skrillex’s first official album since 2014’s Recess; this time around, fans didn’t even need to wait 48 hours for a follow-up. “Listening to Quest for Fire, though, shows how Skrillex has continuously expanded his sonic palette through his productions, remixes, and other work, particularly when it comes to finding beats,” Rolling Stone wrote in its review of the album. “Like the mosh pits and dance floors that have thrilled to his music over the years, Skrillex knows that perpetual motion is crucial.”

British fighters have described the ‘honour’ of battling in Ukraine despite the daily threat of death in a tell-all film about life on the front line.

The soldiers, comprising former servicemen and those with no prior military experience, admitted friends described them as ‘crazy’ for joining the legions of international volunteers who answered the call to defend Ukrainian territories following Vladimir Putin‘s invasion a year ago.

Civilian James Dee disclosed how he shot dead a Russian soldier at close range during a tense stand-off in the key city of Kharkiv, seconds after the Russian killed fellow British volunteer Craig Mackintosh, a landscape gardener from Thetford, in Norfolk.

Mr Dee said: ‘He [the Russian] dropped to the floor, goes to raise his gun, so I shot him six times.

‘I heard behind me: ”Craig’s dead”.

‘After that fire fight I looked down and I cried. Not because I was scared. But seeing it up close and personal, you’re having a laugh with someone and life’s just gone within the click of the fingers.’

The testimony, which includes candid mobile phone footage from soldiers in action, features in a joint investigation by the BBC’s Our World series and Newsnight, produced and presented by Emma Vardy.

In another excerpt, a British Army veteran nicknamed Rambo described how he was itching to return to the Ukrainian front line, despite being repeatedly shot at and severely injured by Russian troops.

Shareef Amin, who is currently undergoing reconstructive surgery at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital, said he originally felt compelled to ‘step up to the plate’ and join the war effort, as he wanted to be ‘true to myself as a human being’.

He said: ‘There is nothing else in this world I want more than to be there with my boys.

‘If it means that much to you, then you’re not going to start something you ain’t going to finish. It’s an honour.

‘I’d do it all again now.

‘It’s not that we love killing or bloodshed, it’s that in those situations humanity really does shine through.’

Last night Scotland Yard said it was investigating 100 referrals of alleged war crimes relating to the conflict on behalf of the International Criminal Court.

Head of counter-terror policing Matt Jukes said the referrals had mostly come from individuals who had fled to Britain following the invasion, or from their friends and family members.

Evidence is being collated to help support future prosecutions.

It came as Western officials admitted there was no end in sight of the war, amid fears Putin is planning a spring offensive on Ukraine from the air, despite Russian casualties reported to number in excess of 1,000 a day.

A source said: ‘I think they still hope they can outlast Ukraine’s determination to defend themselves and that they can outlast international unity.

‘They are prepared to sacrifice their young and the future of their country in order to reap this devastation on Ukraine and seek to exert the control they are seeking to exert.’

The source said they hoped Ukrainian success on the battlefield – boosted by Nato plans to increase the delivery of anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine – would cause the Kremlin to call a halt to its offensive, but admitted it was optimistic rather than realistic.

They said: ‘At the moment I think they [Russia] think they can continue. They don’t admit [the number of] deaths, so they are making it as hard as they can for anyone to have estimates.

‘We think they are in trouble, but how much trouble and when that bites, I think it’s impossible to say at the moment. I don’t see an early end.’

But they added: ‘They [Russia] have lost a lot of people. Fundamentally, it’s still not going well, it’s not going to plan.’

Earlier, the president of Belarus – Russia’s greatest Western ally – confirmed he would again allow his country to be a staging post for the Kremlin to dispatch further troops into Ukraine.

Alexander Lukashenko told the BBC he was ‘ready to provide territory’, and even send his own soldiers into battle in extreme circumstances.

He said: ‘I am also ready to wage war, alongside the Russians, from the territory of Belarus.

‘But only if someone – even a single soldier – enters our territory from Ukraine with weapons to kill my people.’

Next week sees several significant dates in the Russian calendar, including Putin’s annual address to the nation, the patriotic Defender of the Fatherland day, and, a week today, the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.

Last year, Apple TV+ had a zeitgeist hit with “Severance,” a show that leveraged a high-polish gleam and an eerily out-of-time aesthetic to tell a story of people who were ultimately strangers to themselves. The streamer could be said to be attempting the same feat twice with “Hello Tomorrow!,” set in a 1950s idea of the future and centering an affably empty salesman played by Billy Crudup. Here, though, the ideas are unrewarding enough that the worked-over look of the show grows tiresome, as though it’s covering for a lack in the series’ writing.

Created by Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen, “Hello Tomorrow!” features Crudup in something like the mode for which he won an Emmy as “The Morning Show’s” devious executive. Here, he plays Jack, a wheel-spinning operator who is selling timeshares on the moon. His customers are people who, as in our collective memory of our nation’s midcentury past, have a fixation on the possibilities space offers but who, unlike ‘50s Americans,— see getting there as feasible. Joey, the young man Jack takes under his wing (Nicholas Podany), is an ungifted salesman at first. But he makes an emotional impression upon Jack, who is concealing that he is Joey’s father.

An ace grifter disguising hidden wellsprings of feeling gives Crudup plenty to play, and it’s unsurprising that he does it well. “What is life,” he asks a colleague played by Haneefah Wood, “without a dream to make it go down easy?,” and Jack’s urgency and desperation almost convince you that a line this written came into the character’s mind. But the big twists of “Hello Tomorrow!” are ones the viewer will likely see coming, and the show’s games with the double helix of its aesthetic — leaning back in time in order to find ways to depict technologies that haven’t arrived yet — come to feel aggressively tropey. “Succession’s” Dagmara Dominczyk, for instance, makes a very welcome appearance; she’s a performer whom the audience trusts can do any number of things. But as written, her character feels like a rote gloss on the classic femme fatale; Dominczyk elevates the role, but she shouldn’t have to work so hard.

Apple, a streamer with no shortage of money, makes “Hello Tomorrow!” look fabulous, chockablock with old-school Americana and “Jetsons” tech. Here, the tailfinned cars levitate. But the volume of things being thrown at the screen don’t hold our interest as strongly as would one really good visual idea, just as the constellation of lies Jack tells grow unwieldy not just for the character but for us in the audience, too. This is a show burbling with things it wants to show us on a craft level, but an uncertainty about the main thing: What is it really trying to say? The answer seems, ultimately, to be an exploration of a challenging guy for whom work is more rewarding than family life. And 10 episodes is a long way to travel through time to end up in a place that retro, that familiar.

“Hello Tomorrow!” premieres its first three episodes on Apple TV+ on Friday, February 17, with new episodes to follow weekly.

Last year, Apple TV+ had a zeitgeist

Here is Elon Musk’s latest cash-generating idea for Twitter, or at least an attempt to incrementally reduce operating expenses: Next month, the service will restrict access to the simplest form of two-factor authentication — which provides a second layer of security to confirm a user’s login credentials — to Twitter Blue subscribers.

Twitter on Friday announced that as of March 20, 2023, only Twitter Blue subscribers will be able to use text messaging as their two-factor authentication method to verify their username and password when they log in to a new device. Non-subscribers will still be able to enable two-factor authentication (or 2FA in tech lingo) using either an authentication app like Google Authenticator or a physical security key.

If you have text messaging enabled for two-factor authentication on Twitter, and you’re not paying for Twitter Blue, Twitter says on March 20 it will disable the security feature on your account (unless you have switched to another form of 2FA).

Note that Twitter doesn’t require anyone to use two-factor authentication, but it recommends the security step in order to make it harder for someone to hack into your account.

Why the change? Officially, Twitter says it is restricting the text-based two-factor authentication because it has been “abused” by “bad actors” — in other words, it’s somewhat easier to hack than other methods. How restricting text-message 2FA to only paying customers will improve security isn’t exactly clear.

“While historically a popular form of 2FA, unfortunately we have seen phone-number based 2FA be used — and abused — by bad actors,” Twitter said in an article on its support site. (The new help article is dated Feb. 15, while Twitter publicly announced the change on Friday, Feb. 17.)

But Twitter also is in desperate need of revenue, after Musk assumed $12.5 billion in debt to swing the $44 billion takeover of the social network. Note also that Twitter incurs some cost for sending out 2FA verifications via SMS, which may be another reason it’s moving the feature behind a paywall.

Verifying a Twitter account via SMS text message is the easiest way to use 2FA with the app, since it doesn’t require anything beyond the phone you already have. Setting up 2FA through an authentication app or security key requires you to jump through a few more hoops; Twitter details how to do this on its support site at this link.

Twitter Blue, which includes a blue verified check-mark and will soon be the only way to get the badge, costs $8 per month if purchased via the web and $11 per month on iOS or Android. The company relaunched the program in December with new safeguards designed to prevent impersonators, after Twitter’s first attempt to launch blue check-marks for anyone who subscribed results in widespread confusion. Other perks of Twitter Blue include the ability to edit a tweet within a 30-minute window after they’ve been posted, and prioritization of a subscriber’s replies to tweets that they interact with.

In another initiative aimed at boosting revenue, Twitter plans to start charging companies to maintain the gold check-mark verification badges the company introduced in December, which replaced the blue check-marks for businesses. According to early reports, Twitter will charge $1,000 per month, plus an additional $50 monthly for each affiliated sub-account, for the gold check-mark status.

Here is Elon Musk’s latest cash-generating idea

EXCLUSIVE: We have your first look at Superpower, the documentary directed by Sean Penn and Aaron Kaufman that has become one of the most eagerly-awaited premieres at the Berlin Film Festival.

In the clip, a handheld camera follows Penn as he weaves through underground passageways within Ukraine’s presidential palace, on his way to an extraordinary tête-à-tête with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. As the film explores, Penn had arrived in Ukraine in November 2021 in hopes of making a cinematic profile of the country’s dynamic but untested leader, little realizing he would get a first-hand view of one of the most explosive events of this century. His proposed interview with Zelenskyy kept getting pushed back week after week, but finally a date was chosen: February 24, 2022.

As it turned out, that would be the very day Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his brutal invasion of Ukraine. Instead of canceling the interview, Zelenskyy met with Penn in an unadorned subterranean room, discussing his country’s urgent need for support to repel the unprovoked Russian aggression. Penn would go on to have several more conversations with the Ukrainian president in the succeeding months, coming away deeply impressed with Zelenskyy’s leadership in a defining moment of crisis, both for Ukraine and for democratic ideals everywhere.

Superpower premieres tonight in the Berlinale Special Gala section. Fifth Season and Vice Studios are behind the film, an acquisition title at the festival. Fifth Season and CAA are handling worldwide sales.

“When directors Sean Penn and Aaron Kaufman began filming Superpower in late 2021, a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin was a looming, if seemingly distant, threat,” reads a synopsis of the film. “Penn and Kaufman traveled to Ukraine to learn more about Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the actor and comedian who played an unlikely presidential candidate on television before becoming the actual President of Ukraine – at that point known primarily to Americans for rebuffing attempts at coercion in the 2019 Trump-Ukraine scandal that resulted in the [first] impeachment and subsequent acquittal of President Donald Trump.”

The synopsis continues, “But on February 24, 2022, while Penn and Kaufman were filming in Kyiv, Putin’s invasion took the world by storm. As explosions rocked the city, they became inadvertent front-row witnesses to this historic ‘David and Goliath’ struggle. Penn conducted the first of multiple interviews with Zelenskyy on the night of the invasion, and deeply affected by what he witnessed in Kyiv and during the film team’s journey to the border, became an unofficial ambassador for Ukraine and its unlikely leader [Zelenskyy].”

Superpower is directed by Penn and Kaufman and produced by Billy Smith, Segei Bespalov, Danny Gabai, and Lauren Terp.

Aamir Khan made a rare appearance at a recent party on Saturday. The actor even posed for the paparazzi.

Aamir Khan returned to the spotlight on Saturday night while attending a party in Mumbai. The actor, who has been sporting a salt-and-pepper look for a while now, ditches the greys and beard and cleaned up well for the party. Aamir Khan, along with a host of other celebs, attended the Netflix networking party. The actor was snapped by the paparazzi posing with Ramesh Taurani.

The Laal Singh Chaddha star wore a bright-red shirt and black pants and paired them with black specs and black boots. Aamir also sported a smile for the camera. Taking to the comments section of a paparazzo post featuring Aamir’s pictures, fans welcomed him back to the spotlight.

“Aamir Sahab the great (fire emoji),” a comment read. “A lot happened with Aamir Bhai!” another added. “Aamir Khan looks nice (heart eye emojis),” a third comment read. Several others spammed the comment section with heart emojis.

Aamir Khan announced his break from acting last year, citing that he wants to spend some time with his family. Walking down the red carpet of Salaam Venky’s premiere in December, Aamir Khan made it clear that he would not feature in any projects for at least a year. He stated, “I am not doing anything. From the last many years, I have been working continuously so right now I want to spend some time with my family. Paani foundation ka bhi kaam chal rha hai, aur bhi thoda kaam chal rha hai, so I will come back to acting after an year. You can see me in this small role.”

The actor was last seen in Laal Singh Chaddha, co-starring Kareena Kapoor. The film was an adaptation of Tom Hanks’ Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump. The film was praised by critics but was hit by boycott calls against the film. The movie was streamed on Netflix sooner than the team had planned and several first-time viewers praised the film on Twitter.

Johnny Knoxville got a little too candid in a recent interview and might have unwittingly revealed that “The White Lotus” is headed to Japan.

The “Jackass” star sat down with Vulture to discuss the cancellation of his Hulu comedy series, “Reboot,” but the conversation drifted to the upcoming season of HBO’s hit series “The White Lotus” (as conversations tend to do). And Knoxville slipped up.

“Mike White is a very close friend of mine,” Knoxville told Vulture of the show’s creator. “He and I had been in Tokyo together. I think that’s where the next … oh, I’m not giving anything away.”

He stopped himself before adding, “I might call him again as soon as this is over.”

The first season of the Emmy Award-winning anthology series took place at a fictitious luxury resort chain — the White Lotus — and was set in Hawaii, where the overarching theme was wealth and excess. In Season 2, viewers met an entirely new set of vacationers (aside from fan favorite Jennifer Coolidge) in Sicily, where sex is at the forefront of everyone’s mind.

For the next season, White hinted in an HBO Max featurette that the show might be set in Asia. “It would be a kind of satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality,” he said. “And it feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.”

He also played around with the idea of taking “The White Lotus” to another continent.

“We just turned in our last episode to the network yesterday, so it’s hard to think about the next race,” he told Deadline in October. “But if we did, I think it’d be fun to maybe go to a whole different continent. You know, we did Europe, and maybe Asia, something crazy like that, that would be fun.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, one of the most anticipated movies of the year has made its mark. With the world cherishing the legacy left behind by the late Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is one of the best Marvel movies yet. From the cinematography to the soundtrack, the Marvel film features many strong-willed, powerful, dynamic women who are dedicated to protecting Wakanda and its people. Let’s dive into how Wakanda Forever has given rise to the women who will be shaping the future of the MCU.

Shuri grieves her brother’s passing in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (credit: Marvel)

Shuri:

Powerfully taking on the role of a sister-in-grief, Shuri, played by Letita Wright, was the definition of strength throughout this movie. As the new queen, and soon, new Black Panther, Shuri had to deal with the loss of both her brother and mother while defending the country of Wakanda from Namor and the Talocan. Choosing to be noble like her brother, Shuri in the end decides that she will not take revenge on Namor, but rather make a peaceful deal with him so that both Wakandans and the Talocan can coexist.

“In the comics, he’s equally as complex and often finds himself, in turns, allied with or fighting against the traditional do-gooder teams like the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.” writes TIME. With Namor plotting at the end of the film, I’m sure we’ll get to see the new Black Panther in action soon.

Okoye and Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Tensions flare between Okoye and Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (credit: Marvel)

Queen Ramonda:

“Have I not given everything?” questions Queen Ramonda, in the first glimpse we get of Wakanda after King T’challa is gone. As the Queen of the most powerful nation of the world sends chills down our spines, we later watch as she is killed by Namor. After Shuri takes over the crown and becomes the Black Panther, we see a conversation between her and M’Baku about whether or not she will continue her mother’s plans and ideas for the country. Though Queen Ramonda has died, her legacy still lives on within Shuri, and that is evident throughout the rest of the film.

Riri Williams:

19-year-old genius Riri Williams (aka Ironheart) had several Ironman parallels throughout the film. One being that she built an iron-man like suit, which she used when her, Shuri, and Okoye had to escape from cops attempting to raid her warehouse. The film showed a scene where she went above normal-level oxygen altitude, and showed her suit freezing, her falling, and then quickly as she approached the water, she rose back up. This was almost exactly like what happened with Tony Stark in the first Iron Man. Riri and Shuri later work together to make another Heart-Shaped-Herb, giving Shuri the strength and agility of the Black Panther.

“Ironheart has, at times, been part of the Young Avengers team. A much-anticipated (but yet to be announced) Young Avengers project could include her, alongside Ms. Marvel, Wanda Maximoff’s twins Speed and Wiccan, and America Chavez from Doctor Strange, among others” says TIME Magazine. I can’t wait to see Riri’s story in the upcoming Disney+ show, Ironheart.

Shuri Wakanda Forever
Nakia searches for Shuri in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (credit: Marvel)

Nakia:

A war spy, “Nakia is the secret weapon in Wakanda’s chest, bringing all the intel that is essential to protect them from the outer world. In the absence of the love of her life, the only thing driving her forward is the love of her country” (WION). After about a fourth of the movie, we see Queen Ramonda go to Nakia for help to find Shuri after she had been kidnapped by Namor. Nakia finds Shuri, and finally returns back to Wakanda to help fight the Talocan. At the end of the film, we see a very emotional and powerful moment: Shuri meeting her son, T’Challa, whose father was King T’Challa.

Presumably screenwriters Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole introduced little T’Challa for a reason. Will some bad guy try to expose his identity, threatening the future of Wakanda? Will he return to his homeland and begin to learn how to rule the country? If so, we can expect Nakia to be there fighting for Wakanda, herself, and her son.

Okoye:

As the general of the most powerful group of warriors of Wakanda, the Dora Milaje, Okoye has always fearlessly fought to protect Wakanda. After “losing” Shuri to Namor, Queen Ramonda removed Okoye as a general of the Dora Milaje, however that did not stop Okoye from fighting. Later during the final battle between the Wakandans and the Talocan, Okoye, along with Nakia, led the Dora Milaje and other Wakandan soldiers, fighting for the safety of Wakanda and the Black Panther. I cannot wait to see what else is in store for Okoye in the MCU.

I am itching to see what these powerful women do next in the Marvel Universe!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,

The future looks bright for latest Marvel release Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.  The film is expected to bring in a domestic debut of $100-$120 million at the box office. This includes a Friday opening day of $46 million in America at over 4,300 figures.

As The Hollywood Reporter tells us, the third Ant-Man film is also doing well overseas earning $52.6 million through Friday.  If this trend continues, the film is expected to be 30% ahead of the last film in the Ant-Man franchise.

For comparison, the first Ant-Man film brought in $57.2 million domestically over its three day weekend release.  It would however go on to hear $519.3 million globally.  The sequel debuted at $75.8 in North American and would go on to earn $622.7 million worldwide.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is doing well despite a lukewarm response from audiences and critics.  Currently on Rotten Tomatoes, the film only has a 48% approval rating with critics.  It fares slightly better with audiences at 84%.  Quantumania also has a “B” Cinemascore.

Quantumania marks the return of director Peyton Reed along with stars Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp.)  Other cast members include Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonathan Majors, Kathryn Newton, Bill Murray, Katy O’Brian, William Jackson Harper, James Cutler and David Dastmalchian.

Review: Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special (2023)

[Editor’s Note: This review may contain spoilers]

Directed by: Cecilia Aranovich & Jennifer Coyle

Written by: Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker & Dean Lorey

Starring: Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, James Adomian, and others

Reviewed by: Ryan Rodrigues

Summary

To celebrate their first ever Valentine’s Day, Harley Quinn strives to plan the greatest, most romantic night ever for herself and Poison Ivy.  Heroes and villains of Gotham City and beyond also take part in the celebration of love, the aims to achieve the most gushiest, mushiest and most romantic day of the year, in the new Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special.

Positives

If you’re a fan of the hit TV Series, which has now completed its third season, then you’ll enjoy this “Special”, which has a sense of logical flow from the events of the latest season. It is quite possibly one of the most vulgar and outrageous story-lines to ever come from DC animations. As per the title, it follows mainly Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) on their Valentine’s date, where utter chaos and extreme humour follow suite. If you’re not familiar with the TV series, Harley and her band of friends often make many fourth wall breaks, and this is no different. I’ve tried best to avoid any major plot spoilers.

Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special

Though, if I did want to break it up, the 44-minute episode features three main groups, Harley & Ivy, Clayface, and Bane. Clayface’s (Alan Tudyk) story follows him preparing for a date with a new match from a dating app (even against Ivy’s remarks that it might be a catfish), and Bane (James Adomian) who randomly happens to stumble across a date whilst being in the city alone.

The craziness of the adventure begins when Harley purchases a spell from Etrigan the Demon to impress Ivy in the bedroom. The unfortunate side effects of the spell are realized when Ivy releases her pheromones into the Gotham skyline. This causes the people and animals of the city to not hold back their inhibitions (to put terms politely). Meanwhile, Clayface is on a journey of self-discovery and self-love. Bane is faced with a self conscious issue and visits Etrigan to get some help with a certain something being disproportionate with the size of his body. Unfortunately for Bane, this has hilarious side effects when mixed with Ivy’s pheromones.

Valentine’s Day Highlights

A personal highlight throughout the episode was the various super couples giving testimonials about their romances: Superman and Lois Lane, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Killer Croc and Enchantress, Aquaman and Mera, Darkseid and Kimberly Guilfoyle (random, but also funny).

If you’re a big Brett Goldstein fan, he has quite the important part to play in the overall plot.

Superman and Lois in the Harley Quinn Valentine’s Day Special

Negatives

No real negatives for this animated special, other than it being pretty much the length of a double episode, so it is much shorter than many other DC animated films. The themes and tone of the special, in particular, are very mature, and definitely wouldn’t be recommended to younger audiences.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy kiss in the Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special

Verdict

The story is a great and I enjoyed the small jokes within the Valentine’s Day themes of love and romance. Bane’s predicament is utterly hilarious and tied in nicely with the larger story about Harley trying to impress Ivy. The plot holds nothing back and features strong adult themes and references. However, this stays true to the genre and the audience that the series has focused on within the first three seasons. It’s lots of fun and worth the watch for any fans of the series.

Score: 4/5

219 Review: Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s

The 2011 DC Universe animated movie All-Star Superman is coming back for a 4K Ultra HD release this April, and will include some great special features.

Check out the press release below.

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN

BRUCE TIMM & DWAYNE MCDUFFIE’S DC ANIMATED MASTERPIECE COMES TO 4K ULTRA HDTM

FOR THE FIRST TIME ON APRIL 18, 2023

BURBANK, CA (February 15, 2023) – One of the Man of Steel’s most personal tales in DC history – from the mind of comics icon Grant Morrison, and produced under the expert oversight of animation legends Bruce Timm and Dwayne McDuffie – All-Star Superman will be available to own on 4K Ultra HD for the very first time on April 18, 2023 from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment.

Grant Morrison’s beloved, Eisner Award-winning vision of Superman’s heroic final days on Earth is brought to exquisite, animated life in All-Star Superman. The film begins as the Man of Steel rescues an ill-fated mission to the Sun (sabotaged by Lex Luthor) but, in the process, is oversaturated by radiation – which accelerates his cell degeneration. Sensing even he will be unable to cheat death, Superman ventures into new realms – finally revealing his secret to Lois, confronting Lex Luthor’s perspective of humanity, and attempting to ensure Earth’s safety before his own impending end with one final, selfless act.

Twelve years after its initial release, All-Star Superman holds a “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  The film was the 10th in the ongoing series of DC Universe Movies and DC Animated Movies that now number more than 50 films across 17 years.

The star-studded voice cast is headed by James Denton (Good Witch, Desperate Housewives), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, Good Girls) and Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) as Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively. Other noteworthy cast members are seven-time Emmy Award winner Ed Asner (Up, Elf, The Mary Tyler Moore Show) as Perry White, Golden Globe winner Frances Conroy (American Horror Story, Joker, Six Feet Under) as Ma Kent, Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds, Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise) as Jimmy Olsen and Linda Cardellini (Avengers: Endgame, Dead to Me, ER) as Nasty.

Rounding out the impressive cast are Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy), Steve Blum (Star Wars: Rebels, Cowboy Bebop, Naruto), Catherine Cavadini (Elvis, Soul, The Powerpuff Girls), Finola Hughes (General Hospital, Staying Alive), Alexis Denisof (Guardians of the Galaxy, Angel), Obba Babatunde (S.W.A.T., That Thing You Do!), John DiMaggio (Futurama, Interview with the Vampire), Chris Cox (Family Guy), Robin Atkin Downes (The Strain, Batman: The Long Halloween), Kevin Michael Richardson (Mortal Kombat, The Simpsons), Fred Tatasciore (Star Trek: Lower Decks, American Dad!) and Michael Gough (Overwatch, Batman: Arkham Origins).

All-Star Superman is executive produced by animation guru Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) and directed by Sam Liu (Batman: The Killing Joke, The Death and Return of Superman) from a script by acclaimed animation/comics writer Dwayne McDuffie (Static Shock, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited).

McDuffie, an incomparable force in the comics and animation realm, was a co-founder of Milestone Media, the industry’s most successful minority-owned-and-operated comic company. His creations are headlined by Static Shock, for which he won a Humanitas Prize in 2003, and he served as producer in helping guide the beloved Justice League/Justice League Unlimited animated series. McDuffie passed away in 2011 at the age of 49.

All-Star Superman will be available to purchase April 18, 2023 on 4K Ultra HD both online and in-store at major retailers.

SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE:

The Art of the All-star Adaptation (New Featurette) – Go behind the scenes and inside the process of screenwriting, character designing and scoring the animated adaptation of the quintessential Superman comic series, All-Star Superman. This fascinating featurette includes insight from executive producer Bruce Timm, director Sam Liu, character designer Dusty Abell and composer Christopher Drake.

An All-Star Salute to the Silver Age Superman (New Featurette) – Explore DC’s historical inspirations in Grant Morrison’s love letter to the wildly fantastic Silver Age of Superman in comics.

Superman Now (Featurette) – In a moment of inspiration, Grant Morrison was provided an opportunity to revamp the Man of Steel into something modern, something more relevant for today’s audience. This is the story of All-Star Superman – where it all started, and what it came to be.

224 The 2011 DC Universe animated movie All-Star

James Gunn has narrowed down a list of some characters who fans can expect to see in the DCU in the not too distant future.

Fans have been speculating for weeks about who could join the new DCU as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reboot of the franchise. Thanks to a new poll, Gunn has now teased five characters that will be making an appearance, and it is five out of ten possible candidates.

Although many projects are still to be revealed for the DCU, even those announced have still to see any real details being shared about what or who to expect from them. However, Gunn recently responded to a poll showing the ten DC characters that fans want to see make an appearance and seemed to confirm that five of those on the list will be turning up somewhere in the franchise.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The list of ten is made up of Nightwing, Martian Manhunter, Lobo, Brainiac, Deathstroke, Red Hood, Zatanna, The Court of Owls, Mister Freeze, and John Constantine. In his story, Gunn shared an image of the list compiled by IGN with the comment,”Will 5 of 10 do?”

Who Will Be the Five-Fan Favorites Coming to the DCU?

DC Slate
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Slate of Films

Naturally, some of the names on the list of ten immediately stand out as being the most likely to be part of Gunn’s five. Jason Momoa has made no secret that he is a huge fan of Lobo, and that Gunn has “made him really happy” recently after a meeting. Seemingly this is as close to a confirmation of Lobo being one of the five as we can expect right now. Of the others, a number of these characters are already either set to appear in DC projects or have recently been used. Keanu Reeves is returning as John Constantine. Joe Manganiello appeared as Deathstroke in Zack Snyder’s universe. The same can be said of Martian Manhunter, who was played by Harry Lennix. Mister Freeze infamously was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 90s Batman & Robin and appeared in the Gotham TV series. The Court of Owls has been hinted to have a role to play in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe.

All in all, this doesn’t mean that those characters won’t be appearing in some form, but following Gunn’s desire to include some more obscure characters in his DCU, then the like of Zatanna and Brainiac could well be part of the plan. Of course, we also know that we can pretty much guarantee to see either Dick Grayson or Jason Todd, or both, turning up somewhere alongside the new Batman.

While there is still a long way to go before Gunn shares any meaningful details about the majority of the recently announced slate, there is plenty in this post for fans to debate, and it is another sign that Gunn is happy to give away some idea of what is coming in the future. While there are more pressing matters of the casting of the new Superman and Batman to be considered ahead of the arrival of secondary characters, the idea of some lesser-known characters getting their chance to shine on screen is certainly more appealing than seeing some over-used characters being rehashed once again.

James Gunn has narrowed down a list

With reports teasing how old the new replacement for Superman will be in the DC Universe (DCU), DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn clarified his comments on what fans should expect.

Superman has been a hot topic in recent weeks following Gunn’s long-awaited announcement revealing the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate that will kick off the new DCU in 2025. The first movie in that group is Superman: Legacy, which will introduce Henry Cavill‘s replacement in the role after the fan-favorite actor’s exit from the DCU at the end of 2022.

Shortly after the announcement regarding Superman’s new solo film, a report indicated that Gunn and company were looking for an actor in his mid-20s to portray Clark Kent, with the character being approximately 25 years old in the new DCU.

This would make for a much younger Superman than fans have seen in recent years, as Cavill’s Clark Kent was 33 years old when he first became a hero in 2013’s Man of Steel.

James Gunn Addresses New Superman Age Claim

DC

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn took to Twitter to set the record straight on what his plans are for Superman in the new DC Universe, specifically touching on the character’s age.

After The Hollywood Reporter shared that Superman would be about 25 years old in the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie, Gunn clarified the news and compared it to what Batman’s age will be.

He noted that people are speculating between 25 and 30, but he confirmed that he would only be “younger than in his forties” and that he “might be” a little younger than Batman:

“Yeah but people are speculating about both ages. All I ever said was Superman was younger than in his forties and Batman MIGHT be a couple years older than Superman.”

Responding to another fan who repeated the number 25 for Superman’s age, Gunn made it clear that this was never officially stated:

“Nope! It keeps getting repeated but I never said that.”

How Old Will Superman Actually Be in the DCU?

While Gunn makes it clear that he never specified Superman’s age in the new story, he didn’t flat-out deny that Superman would be that age either.

The DC Studios leader is always careful with exactly how he words his messages to fans, even when he’s not blatantly shutting down some kind of bogus rumor.

There’s no telling what exact age Superman will be in the new DCU, although Gunn confirmed that it will explore his origins as he learns to navigate his life as a Kryptonian and as a citizen of Earth.

While he’s explained that the All-Star Superman comic run will help inspire this story, he’ll certainly be young enough where he can carry the new franchise for the better part of a decade, if not longer.

Casting won’t begin for this role until after the script for Superman: Legacy is complete, which might not be for some time considering how far out the release date is.

But as fans wait for more news about the movie as a whole, casting will remain a hot topic as the anticipation builds to see who the next Last Son of Krypton will be.

Superman: Legacy will debut in theaters on July 11, 2025.

As with PiP modes on other platforms, WhatsApp will minimize your video call when you look at a different app, allowing you to multitask while still seeing the person you’re chatting with over the service. If you can’t access PiP immediately, Meta notes the feature, and other enhancements introduced with WhatsApp’s latest update, will roll out “over the coming weeks.”

Speaking of other features, WhatsApp 23.3.77 also allows you to add captions to documents you send over the app. Additionally, Meta has tweaked group chat settings, allowing you to add longer subjects and descriptions to better describe what your chat groups are all about. Avalanche Software currently has no plans to release DLC expansions for Hogwarts Legacy, it’s claimed.

Speaking during IGN Fan Fest, game director Alan Tew claimed that the game’s development team was so absorbed by preparing for its release, that it hasn’t yet considered post-release content.

“We’ve been really heads down bringing [Hogwarts Legacy] to life,” he said, “so at the moment, there are no current plans for DLC.”

Hogwarts Legacy was released earlier this month and has already received a post-launch patch on all platforms. The game also has additional content in the form of an exclusive PlayStation quest, which is only available to players on PS5.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that Hogwarts Legacy enjoyed the biggest European launch outside of the FIFA and Call of Duty series since October 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2.

Hogwarts Legacy’s first-week digital sales in Europe were 56% higher than Elden Ring’s, according to GamesIndustry.biz head Chris Dring.

Hogwarts Legacy was released amid significant controversy surrounding book author JK Rowling’s publicly-stated views on transgender rights.

The game is the subject of a boycott due to public comments from Rowling perceived by many to be transphobic (for a full breakdown of the situation, we recommend this article by Glamour).
