The Cannes Film Festival has added Jean-Bernard Marlin’s Marseille second feature Salem to its Un Certain Regard line-up devoted to new cinematic voices.

The Marseille gangland-set fantasy follows a former gang member who believes his daughter is the only one who can save his community from an apocalyptic curse uttered by a rival gang member in his dying breath.

Salem is Marlin’s second feature after the gritty romance Shéhérazade which debuted in Cannes Critics’ Week in 2018.

Also set against the backdrop of Marseille, the film won best first film in France’s 2019 César awards as well as most promising Actress and Actor for its big screen debutants Kenza Fortas and Dylan Robert.

The film is co-produced by Bruno Nahon’s Unité and Vatos Locos Productions, Marlin’s company with Romain Daubeach and Marine Bergère, with international sales handled by Goodfellas.

The Un Certain Regard section now features 20 titles in total, eight of them first films. Just 19 of the titles will be in the running for the main prize, with French director Alex Lutz’s Une Nuit closing the section Out Of Competition.

Cannes slipped in the addition of the new title into a press release announcing the jury for the section, which will be presided over by Cannes regular, actor John C. Reilly.

The Cannes Film Festival runs May 15 to 27.

Check out the first footage from Denis Villeneuve’s sequel ahead of the full trailer release on Wednesday, May 3.

Paul Atreides’ rise among the Fremen is upon us.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first teaser for “Dune: Part Two” ahead of the official trailer release set for Wednesday, May 3. Watch below.

The film will open in theaters on November 3, 2023, tracking Paul’s (Timothée Chalamet) ascension among the Fremen and the resulting rebellion against Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken), as Paul seeks revenge for the murder of his father while trying to bring peace to Arrakis.

Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem are all set to reprise their roles from their first film, with some new faces joining the cast. Along with Walken, they include Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, Souheila Yacoub, and Tim Blake Nelson.

At CinemaCon, director Denis Villeneuve said that “‘Part Two’ is more action-packed, epic war movie, much more bulk, much more dance.” This time, the entire film was shot with IMAX cameras. Only about 40 percent of “Part One” filmed with IMAX cameras.

The Warner Bros./Legendary Entertainment film will skip the Venice Film Festival this summer, where “Part One” premiered in 2021, as Villeneuve and his team wrap up its ambitious special effects. And as the film’s CinemaCon presentation revealed, many of those effects are practical, including Chalamet’s ride on one of Arrakis’ giant sandworms.

Jon Spaihts and Denis Villeneuve once again co-write the script, with Oscar nominees Pugh as “political chess player” Princess Irulan Corrino and Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, “an Olympic sword master crossed with a psychotic serial killer.”

A recent curtain raiser for the film in Vanity Fair revealed that Chalamet and Zendaya had very little time each day to film their romance scenes: only about an hour at sunset to capture the natural light.

“There’s kind of, like, a ticking timer,” Zendaya told the outlet. “You kind of feel like, ‘Okay, we got here, but we have maybe an hour to get this.’ So we revisited a bit every day, and over a few days, that gives us a few hours. Every time we revisited it, we kind of got to sleep on it and think about it, and come up with a new set of ideas.”

Look out for the full trailer on IndieWire tomorrow.

The second season of Shadow and Bone finally came to Netflix in March 2023, and viewers couldn’t get enough of Alina Stark, the Darkling, and the Crows. The magical world came to be thanks to Leigh Bardugo’s books of the same name. The cast and the creator of the show continue to tease fans of the stories that they would like to tell along with a spin-off with our favorite band of thieves.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 has brought the Grishaverse to a stand-still as fans everywhere are waiting for a Season 3 announcement. However, there are plenty of fantasy shows that can keep someone occupied until then. The diversity of the cast in Shadow and Bone was one of the main reasons why so many people fell in love with the show — in addition, of course, to all the magic, knife fights, and flying ships. The fantasy genre has many shows that break through the stereotypical plot lines and characters like Shadow and Bone. Here are nine show suggestions that even Kaz Brekker would tip his hat to.

9 The Outpost

The CW

The Outpost streamed on The CW, and fans of Shadow and Bone will really be able to get into this show if they loved the mystery behind the Fold. Talon is the lone survivor of a race called “Blackbloods.” Her entire village was destroyed many years ago by violent mercenaries. Talon makes her way to a lawless fortress on the end of civilization called the Outpost, where she tracks down those who killed her family. On her journey, Talon discovers that she has mysterious powers that she needs to learn how to use in order to save herself and the world from a religious dictator.

8 Half-Bad: The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself

Half Bad: The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself on Netflix.
Netflix

The new Netflix series was not able to get renewed, but Half Bad: The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself was an extremely gory and intense story about witches at war. The United Business Journal says the show is based on the book series of the same name by Sally Green, and follows Nathan, the son of a Fairborn witch and a Blood witch. His fate is to become evil just like his father, which is why decides to leave.

Half Bad really gets into the choice between good and evil when violence can come from both sides. Plus, there is plenty of gore and romance to keep viewers watching, especially if they just finished the latest season of Shadow and Bone.

7 Lockwood & Co.

Lockwood & Co. is another Netflix original based on a book series created by Jonathan Stroud. The show is set in a parallel universe in Britain, where ghosts are real and only children can see them. Lucy Carlyle is one of those gifted teenage ghost-hunters, who finds herself on the run after her best friend gets killed on a job. She heads to London and starts working for a startup business with two boys. Lockwood & Co. is a spooky good time that does the book series justice, and gives Shadow and Bone viewers the magic they are looking for.

6 Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time cast
Disney-ABC Domestic Television

Any and all Disney fairy tales come to life in ABC’s Once Upon a Time. Storybrooke, Maine is filled with princes, princesses, fairies, and many more magical creatures that come straight out of story book. TV Tropes details how Emma Swan is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, but does not remember until she makes it to town because of the son she gave up. Her son tells her that the town he grew up in is filled with fairytale characters, but they don’t remember who they are since their minds have been wiped by the Evil Queen. Once Upon a Time gave viewers a diverse cast with strong female leads that ran for seven seasons, and that fans of Shadow and Bone will appreciate watching.

5 The Magicians

The Magicians
NBCUniversal Television Distribution

The Magicians is the perfect amount of magic and mystery with an adult tone for fans of Shadow and Bone. The show aired on Syfy and followed a group of students at a magical school. Quentin and Julia are best friends and completely inseparable — until they are torn from one another. The Magicians has a packed cast filled with diverse storylines that tend to gear towards darker themes during the five seasons that it ran for.

However, there is war being fought between demons and half-angel/half-humans called Shadowhunters. Fighting alongside Jace, Alec, and Isabelle, Clary quickly finds herself in the middle of the war and must master her abilities to save both worlds. Shadowhunters and Shadow and Bone are built on the backbone of a young girl trying to save the world.

3 The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Time brings elements of the real-world to build its universe, according to Entertainment Weekly. The show follows Moiraine, who’s in an all-women organization that’s on the hunt for the Dragon Reborn. The Prime Video original is based on the book series of the same name, and gives Shadow and Bone fans a new dangerous journey to get completely enthralled in. The villain of the show will even remind viewers of the Darkling, and has plenty of in-fighting and mystery that one might even forget this isn’t Shadow and Bone.

2 Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Nick and Sabrina
Netflix

The Archie comics brings Netflix another hit series with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Sabrina Spellman is a half-human/half-witch that has to come to terms with her dark family heritage all while trying to attend high school like a normal teenager. Sabrina is a force to be reckoned with and does everything she can to pave her own path while trying to outsmart some powerful beings. She may not always do the right thing, and at times can be selfish, but she needs to learn quickly from her mistakes if she wants to save her family and friends. Shadow and Bone fans will enjoy watching Sabrina as a badass witch beating the bad guys through each season of the show.

1 His Dark Materials

His Dark Materials
HBO
BBC

His Dark Materials is an HBO Max original based on Philip Pullman’s books. The show really delves into the idea of multiple realities with the primary storyline being set in a world where humans have companions named daemons. Lyra is the main character of the show and discovers that she is the only one who is able to read the coveted compass without years of studying it. Her ability will change the realities as they know them and destroy political machines that are beyond her control. His Dark Materials is an experience, but fans of Shadow and Bone can see how Lyra and Alina are a lot alike as characters.

The second season of Shadow and

Refresh for updates: Tony Award nominees were celebrating today, with the stars, producers and creative teams of Parade, Kimberly Akimbo, Shucked and The Piano Lesson among those reacting to their nominations.

“I am beyond excited to be nominated this year, and I’m deeply honored to be recognized for this role especially,” said Ben Platt, nominated in the Best Leading Actor/Musical category for his performance in Parade. “As a lifelong lover of musical theatre, this show has always had a special place in my heart. And as a Jew, giving a voice to Leo Frank’s story and bringing him to life each night is so wonderfully meaningful. It’s incredibly special to be included among such talented actors and friends and I’m feeling so grateful and so proud of my entire company.”

“This morning was absolutely incredible,” said Casey Nicholaw, nominated for both his direction and choreography for the musical Some Like It Hot. “It’s the first time I got to experience hearing the nominations with one of my casts instead of at home. And to add to it, we were performing on the Today Show and we couldn’t make any noise – so there were just real tears and fake clapping! And then when we were done with the segment, there was so much screaming and camaraderie. I will never forget it. Childhood dreams come true.”

Corey Hawkins, Leading Actor/Play, Topdog/Underdog: “A huge honor to be nominated again in this category, this year alongside my brother Yahya! I had the privilege of embodying a character in Lincoln that will live with me and with countless others forever. One of the most challenging and rewarding roles I’ve ever taken on. Suzan-Lori Parks wrote a masterful symphony, Topdog/Underdog. All we had to do was play the music under the skilled leadership of our conductor, Kenny Leon. It is an homage to black men, to the unseen, to the underdogs. Grateful for the journey and to the audiences we got to share each night with on the boards. Big ups to the Topdog team!”

Stephen McKinley Henderson, Leading Actor/Play, Between Riverside and Crazy: I am grateful to be part of a wonderful journey with Stephen Adley Guirgis and Austin Pendelton. It takes an ensemble for an actor to get a nomination. I’ve been surrounded by a family of actors and a village of stage managers and crews. from beginning to end. To be nominated in this exceptional Broadway season is a tremendous joy.

Kevin Del Aguila, Featured Actor/Musical, Some Like It Hot: “My jaw hit the floor and it’s been there ever since! I was cheering and hugging, flooded with gratitude and love, and then I had to quickly run off to a dental appointment. Now I’m spending the rest of the day sporting a giant, sparklingly bright smile.”

Jodie Comer, Lead Actress/Play, Prima Facie: “I love getting to play the role of Tessa in Prima Facie, so to receive this Tony Award nomination for my Broadway debut is beyond my wildest dreams. Broadway audiences have been so welcoming to me, so it has truly been an amazing experience. I am grateful to get to speak Suzie Miller’s words in her vital and urgent play, and for director Justin Martin, who guided me every step of the way.”

Jessica Chastain, Leading Actress/Play, A Doll’s House: “If I could tell that girl who yearly recorded the Tony Awards on her VHS that this would happen, it would have blown my world open. To tell her she’d be living in New York, performing in A Doll’s House, and nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress… It is a dream come true. Thank you so much to The Wing and the Tony Awards for recognizing our play. Thank you, The Jamie Lloyd Company, Ambassador Theatre Group, Wessex Grove, Hudson Theatre, Gavin Kalin Productions and 101 for believing in us. Everyday I get to say Amy Herzog’s words and act with the most incredible group of artists. Jamie Lloyd, none of this would have happened without you. Love you very much.”

Sean Hayes, Leading Actor/Play, Good Night, Oscar: “Thank you to The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing for this incredibly humbling nomination…I am honored to be included in such esteemed company. I am forever grateful to Doug Wright and Lisa Peterson for giving me the opportunity, and the stage, to bring Oscar Levant to life alongside a brilliant cast, crew and producers who work tirelessly to make this show so special. It is a privilege to portray someone so complex; someone who is both hilarious and heartbreaking and I am truly grateful and thankful for this beautiful acknowledgement.”

Arian Moayed, Featured Actor/Play, A Doll’s House: “I don’t have enough words to describe how honored and excited I am. The only joy greater than this Tony nomination is sharing it with Jessica, Jamie, Amy and the incredible company of A Doll’s House.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Leading Actor/Play, Topdog Underdog: “I was introduced to you at 20 years old. You taught me that there was a place in the theater if I were daring enough to take up space. You were confirmation that I belonged. Today, 16 years later, as I wake up to news of a Tony Award Nomination for the role I’ve dreamt about for so long, you continue to be the gift that keeps on giving. I’m grateful to Suzan-Lori Parks, to my Director Kenny Leon, the entire creative team including our producers, and especially my brother on the boards, Corey Hawkins. Congratulations to my fellow nominees. It’s a pleasure to be amongst great company.”

Samuel L. Jackson, Best Featured Actor/Play, The Piano Lesson: “It’s a thrill to be nominated – this honor is particularly special having been under the direction of LaTanya and getting to continue August Wilson’s legacy on Broadway after first performing The Piano Lesson on stage at the Yale Repertory Theater 35 years ago. Thank you to the members of the American Theater Wing & Broadway League. Congratulations to all of the nominees.”

Bonnie Milligan, nominated for her Featured performance in Kimberly Akimbo, said, “I am absolutely blown away by this nomination. Growing up in a double wide trailer in the Midwest, dreaming of Broadway seemed so far away. To be embraced by the Broadway community, means the world to me. My ‘great adventure’ with Kimberly Akimbo has been one of the most beautiful of my life, and I feel so lucky to be in this gorgeous show, with these gorgeous people.”

Jordan E. Cooper, Playwright/Featured Actor/Play, Ain’t No Mo: “What a morning! I got to watch the nominations in Texas with my parents in the same living room that I used to do plays in as a kid. Ain’t No Mo’ may not have had a long life on Broadway but it sure did have an impactful one. The work matters. I’m so incredibly grateful to the American Theater Wing, Lee Daniels, my incredible director, cast and crew along with everyone who championed this bold play all over the country.”

Annaleigh Ashford, Leading Actress/Musical, Sweeney Todd: “Thank you American Theatre Wing! It is an honor to be nominated alongside these talented women. I am deeply proud to be part of a show that has long inspired so many people to become artists and continues to do so today. Steve Sondheim was masterful at ensuring that the female counterpoint in his shows was equal and he was authentically interested in telling the whole, full story of all humans. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be telling his story with this magical cast, crew, and creative team. Congratulations to you all.”

Miriam Silverman, Featured Actress/Play, Lorraine Hansberry’s The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window: “I was dropping off my four year old at preschool this morning when the nominations started being read. I was nervous but felt like it was such a long shot, I kept telling myself to chill. I got home in time to watch the category read live, and fell into my husbands arms in disbelief.

“I’m utterly floored and blown away. This is a dream come true. I’ve been with this play and this character since we did it in Chicago at the Goodman in 2016. This production, and everyone involved have been so incredible. The last few months have been simultaneously the hardest of my life and the more glorious. I’m so grateful for this acknowledgment, and so grateful to get to bask in Lorraine’s genius every night.

“Now I’m on my way to teach my students at NYU. Last week they insisted I was going to be nominated… I said no way… I would buy them all donuts if I got nominated…. So I’m on my way to buy a bunch of donuts.”

Kevin Cahoon, Featured Actor/Musical, Shucked: “I did my first Broadway show 29 years ago and this honor had never come my way. Today, I received a Tony Nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and the feeling is unlike anything I could have ever imagined. I am so filled with gratitude and thanks for everyone who has believed in me and invested in me and sacrificed for me and hustled for me. However, to stand alongside the incredible company of Shucked at The Nederlander Theatre 8 times a week is is the greatest gift of all. This 9 year labor of love that is Shucked affects audiences in a way that I have never experienced and I can’t wait to get back to that theater tonight and watch in awe as that show works its magic.”

Robert Horn, Book/Musical, Shucked: “I could not be more thrilled and excited for our 9 nominations. Shucked is a show about community and family, a show that leads with laughter and heart, and what better tonic for a post pandemic world! Personally, I am honored to be in such distinguished company, in such a vibrant season, and after 10 years of working on this, it’s a lesson in perseverance! Congrats to my Shucked family, and thank you to the nominators, The Broadway League and The American Theater Wing for this great honor!”

Greg Nobile, Sue Wagner, and John Johnson (producers), Best Play Revival, The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window: “More than anyone, this Best Revival of a Play nomination belongs to Lorraine Hansberry, who generously chose to share her remarkable talent, wisdom, and worldview with this brilliant-but-little-known play. We are all the lucky beneficiaries of her largesse, and we hope we’ve done her proud. This nomination is also a tribute to everyone who took part in the herculean effort to move The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window to Broadway over an incredibly short period of time.”

Martyna Majok (playwright), Best Play, Cost of Living: “I am beaming with joy for this incredible honor. It means the world for this story and these beautiful artists to be recognized by our community that I feel so grateful to be a part of every day. Cost of Living is about hoping for miracles and searching for a home in others, and that’s what this gift feels like to me right now.“

Helen Park, Best Original Score, KPOP: “After dedicating eight years of my life to working on KPOP and dreaming of sharing my music with the world, I am honored and humbled to be included in such an esteemed group. The recognition of my work through this nomination is a testament to the tireless efforts of my incredible creative team and cast who joined me in pushing boundaries and bringing a never-before-seen performance to the Broadway stage. Their hard work and dedication have truly paid off, and I am thrilled to share this moment with them. I am at a loss for words, and deeply grateful for this recognition.”

Max Vernon, Best Original Score , KPOP: “I’m thrilled to be nominated and also feel like I just drank ten coffees! KPOP‘s run was cut short, but it’s so wonderful and moving to know that our score lives on. This month it will be nine years since our first workshop at Ars Nova. What a wild journey! I wish I could tell the five year old me who wanted to be Cosette in Les Miz about this.”

Sophia Choi and Clint Ramos, Best Costume Design/Musical, KPOP: “Happy AAPI Heritage Month! Thank you and we are so proud of our show. We dedicate this honor to the entire company of KPOP! “

Brian Moreland (producer), Best Play Revival, The Piano Lesson: “We were honored to be selected by Constanza Romero Wilson to lead this new production for our generation. We are here because of LaTanya Richardson Jackson’s singular vision and are gratified that Mr. Wilson’s work is living on. On behalf of Kandi Burruss, Todd Tucker, Tom Kirdahy, Sonia Friedman and our co-producers, and especially August Wilson, we give thanks.”

Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker (producers), Best Play Revival, The Piano Lesson: “Every bit of this experience of being producers on August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson has been a dream come true. Starting with Constanza Romero Wilson giving her blessing for us to bring Mr. Wilson’s great work back to Broadway. On day one of seeing our amazing cast and phenomenal director Latanya Richardson Jackson in rehearsals, we knew this show was special and that we were making August Wilson proud. We are so grateful for this nomination! Thank you!”

LaTanya Richardson Jackson (director), Best Play Revival, The Piano Lesson: “This glorious recognition of August Wilson’s beautiful work , The Piano Lesson, amplifies his legacy and supports it as a living representation of our culture. It honors August and I am overjoyed.”

Colton Ryan, Leading Actor/Musical, New York, New York: “The act of coming together to create is my love language, and the theater has been my lifelong sordid love affair. After two years of being told we are essentially non-essential, the biggest honor is just being able to do it at all. And to do it with such extraordinary company (especially my friend and singular talent, Anna Uzele), I figured I couldn’t get any luckier. But whaddaya know? To John Kander, thank you for dedicating your life to this art form. My life is infinitely fuller because of it.”

J. Harrison Ghee, Lead Actor/Musical, Some Like It Hot: “I’m thrilled! It has been a fantastic journey to portray Jerry/Daphne, and I’ve been overwhelmed — in a good way — to see how audiences have received these characters. I’m thankful to every member of this production for creating such an affirming space where I get to show the complexity of this human and go on a beautiful ride every time the curtains go up. I’m grateful to the committee for recognizing this work. It’s a moment I will cherish forever.”

Suzan-Lori Parks (playwright), Best Play Revival, Topdog/Underdog: “I am thrilled and deeply honored to have my work embraced and recognized! And I’m also so happy for Corey and Yahya! Our Topdog revival was a joyous team effort, with Kenny Leon leading the way! I’m doing my happy dance!”

Shane McAnally, Best Score, Shucked: “When we started this show a decade ago, just getting to Broadway seemed like a dream too big to dream, so to be recognized by the Tony’s is truly beyond my wildest.”

Brandy Clark, Best Score, Shucked: “The first musical I ever saw was Oklahoma and I fell in love. It’s been a lifelong love affair for me and musical theater, but I never dreamed I’d be a part of the musical theater/Broadway world. Shucked has made dreams I never dreamed come true.”

Alex Newell, Feature Actor/Musical, Shucked: “To be nominated alongside such talented individuals is a tremendous honor. I grew up dreaming of singing my heart out on a Broadway stage, and to not only accomplish that, but also receive a nomination for it? It is beyond a dream come true. This is a surreal moment for me and I’m feeling deeply grateful and happy.”

Jack O’Brien, Best Direction/Musical, Shucked: “As someone whose first nomination dates to 1977, which was Porgy & Bess, you can imagine how proud and thrilled I am to be included in this raft of ravishing young talent. We had one of the great collective community experiences I have ever known and that must have been evident from the amount of joy every night in our theater. Since, for me, it can’t be called a competition, because our work is all so varied and different. This is the best gift I could have asked for.”

David Lindsay-Abaire, Book/Musical, Kimberly Akimbo: “I’m completely over the moon that Kimberly Akimbo has gotten so much love from the Tony nominators. It’s an amazing season on Broadway and I’m thrilled that our scrappy musical has been so embraced and recognized. I’m beyond proud of our director and actors and orchestrator, and I’m especially happy to share a nomination with my co-creator and partner in crime Jeanine Tesori.”

Jeanine Tesori, Score/Musical, Kimberly Akimbo: “My pulse is still going bop bop bop bop from hearing our names called. Kimberly Akimbo was written from the deepest place in my heart all the way to my funny bone. Honored and thrilled.”

Brian d’Arcy James, Lead Actor/Musical, Into The Woods: “I’m so grateful to have gotten a chance to interpret and give life to such a special character from the hearts and minds of Steven Sondheim and James Lapine. It’s a task not to be taken lightly and so to receive this honor of a nomination in this way is extraordinary. Congratulations to all the other nominees as well.”

Max Webster, Direction/Play, Life of Pi: “It’s been such a privilege and honour to present Life of Pi on Broadway, and I’m so thrilled we have received this recognition. It feels like an important story of survival and hope to be telling right now, and I am thrilled audiences have responded with such wonderful warmth open heartedness to our show.”

Matthew López & Amber Ruffin, Book/Musical, Some Like It Hot: “We are thrilled to be nominated alongside so many from our Some Like It Hot family. Our show has always been to us about the power of the community to uplift individuals. That it has been received by audiences and by the Tony nominators with that same spirit makes this all feel full circle. We hope these nominations help bring the show and its message of self-acceptance and self-fulfillment to an even wider audience than before.”

Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman, Score/Musical, Some Like It Hot: “We love our show, we love our collaborators, we love our cast. We are thrilled and honored to be the most nominated musical of the season. In fact, we are joyous and celebrating… eight shows a week at the Shubert Theatre!”

Victoria Clark, Lead Actress/Musical, Kimberly Akimbo: “It is a thrill to be nominated for a Tony this season among such outstanding actors who are also phenomenal human beings. I’m proud of our industry, for the strength of this season across all categories of stage work, after the devastation of Covid and everything we lost- from jobs, to creative expression, to community and collaboration. To be back in the rehearsal room and onstage building this iconic show has been the ride of a lifetime for me. I’m so delighted for Kimberly Akimbo and for all the artists who were nominated from our little show village who work with such craft and delicacy to create this incredible world and these indelible characters that make our musical so unique and life-changing. I feel incredibly humbled, blessed, and over the moon.”

Michael Arden, Director/Musical, Parade: “Overwhelmed to be included in such incredible company. To be at the helm of both Parade and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol this Broadway season has been the honor of my career thus far. I am indebted to all the artists who came together to make both these singular productions possible.”

Bradley King, Lighting Design/Play, Fat Ham: “Wow wow wow wow wow! My heart is so full this morning. It is a tremendous honor to have been nominated alongside so many wonderful friends and collaborators, and I want to give a special shout out to the whole Fat Ham design team of Dominique, Maruti, and Mikaal, with whom I am absolutely sharing this honor. Joy is at the heart of Jame’s beautiful play, and joyous is the perfect word to capture my reaction!”

Jonathan Deans, Sound Design/Play, Ain’t No Mo’: “With much thanks. The Producers and Management supported Taylor and I to join together allowing us to shape the invisible with Stevie and Jordan, reflecting on the stunning performances with an amazing collaboration from everyone. “

Taylor J Williams, Sound Design/Play, Ain’t No Mo’: “I’m still floored that I was invited into the vortex of this show. Jonathan’s collaboration, along with the amazing work of so many people at the Belasco, have made this a dream experience. The honor of a nomination this morning is a (very big) cherry on top of it all!”

Jordan Donica, Featured Actor/Musical, Camelot: “Words simply cannot describe the differing and constant emotions that I am feeling. I am a wee bit sleepy, a lot bit energized, and just at peace with whatever has been and whatever will be. It is an honor to be nominated along such incredible talents and, more importantly, incredible people. Thank you for the recognition and thank you to Lincoln Center Theater and the beautiful cast and crew of Camelot. No one gets to where they are alone. Thank you to everyone on Team Jordan and thank you to my entire family for the never-ending love, support, and guidance. ‘Every day is a gift’ (Kathy Schutte).”

Tim Hatley, Scenic Design and Costume Design, Life of Pi: “I am absolutely thrilled to be included in this year’s nominations. The scenic builders, costume makers, and all of our wonderful crews in the Broadway theatre community have been so welcoming to me. The design for Life of Pi is a very special piece of creativity, so it’s simply wonderful to have nominations!”

Jamie Lloyd, Direction/Play, A Doll’s House: “Working with Jessica Chastain, Arian Moayed, Amy Herzog and the entire company of A Doll’s House has been one of the greatest experiences of my career. It was a privilege to create this new production of Ibsen’s masterpiece for Broadway audiences with a team of exceptional artists. We are honored and grateful to be recognised with these Tony nominations.”

Brandon Uranowitz, Featured Actor/Play, Leopoldstadt: “I’m just floored and overwhelmed with gratitude. This play means more to me than I could ever articulate and to be recognized in this way is the honor of a lifetime. But, I have to say, Leopoldstadt is an ensemble piece in the truest sense of the word and my work cannot exist without the 37 extraordinary other actors on stage with me each night. I share this with them.”

Colman Domingo (producer), Best Play, Fat Ham: “I am beyond thrilled today as a Tony nominated producer on James Ijames exquisite Pulitzer Prize winning play, Fat Ham. To champion this Black playwright from the Public Theater/NBT production to Broadway is very meaningful to me. No Black playwright has won the Tony Award for Best Play since 1987. This is a master work, that I hope goes all the way because I truly believe that this is the daring, bold and light filled work that needs to brighten and add more color to the great white way.”

Scott Pask, Scenic Design/Musical, Shucked and Some Like It Hot: “I couldn’t be more stunned, or more thrilled about the nominations for my work on Shucked and Some Like it Hot! To be recognized for both of these incredible productions – well, the enormity of it all is still sinking in. I have been a part of these very special shows long before the pandemic began, so to have the designs accomplished, and then realized during such a precarious time in the world, and especially within our live arts community, makes this recognition all the more special and significant.”

Jordan Roth (producer) Revival/Musical, Into the Woods: “Into the Woods has always been the show that holds our hand through so many moments in life. To have so many of our Into the Woods family recognized today is one more moment that makes it worth the journeying.”

Lear DeBessonet, Direction/Musical, Into The Woods: “My heart bursts with gratitude for the recognition of our work on Into the Woods. I always thought of this show as a great expression of love and humanity, and I am so honored that our intention was embraced with this incredible generosity.”

Sara Bareilles, Leading Actress/Musical, Into the Woods: “I’m absolutely reeling. My heart is so full with love for the show- and for what this story meant to all of us onstage, backstage, as well as in the audience. I am beyond honored for this acknowledgement and I reserve the right to spontaneously start screaming with joy at any point today.”

Julia Lester, Featured Actress/Musical, Into the Woods: “I’m a theatre kid from a theatre family. The Tony’s are our Super Bowl. Every year when they roll around, we gather together to cheer on the nominees. Hearing my name in the mix this year was …. well, I’ll never find the right words to describe what this feels like. I am so insanely grateful to the American Theatre Wing and the Tony Nominating Committee for recognizing not only my performance, but also our entire show with so many nominations. The first Broadway show I ever saw was at the St. James Theatre and to have my Broadway debut on that same stage was so surreal and full circle. Thank you to the entire Broadway community for being so welcoming to me and Little Red.”

Michael Yeargan, jointly nominated with 59 Productions, Scenic Design/Musical, Camelot: “It’s a thrill to be nominated, but more-so for the collaboration with Ben Pearcy and 59 Productions, the extraordinary company and the brilliant Camelot production team at Lincoln Center Theatre – it just doesn’t get any better!”

Lorna Courtney, Leading Actress/Musical, & Juliet: “It feels amazing to be honored and recognized in this way, and for this show, it means everything. Congratulations to my fellow nominees, they are all incredibly talented. And thank you so much to the Tonys. To be a young Black woman, from Queens, New York, this is truly a dream come true!”

Jennifer Weber, Choreography, KPOP and & Juliet: “When I was a kid, I used to watch the Tony Awards, tape the performances and teach myself the choreography. To be a part of this community is an incredible honor and it is beyond my wildest dreams to have my work recognized alongside legends such as Nicholaw, Stroman and Hoggett. So much heart went into both of these productions and I’m so proud of everyone that contributed to bringing these two unique stories to the Broadway stage!”

John Shivers, Sound Design/Musical, Shucked: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been nominated for my work on Shucked. It has been an extremely rewarding production to be a part of. I can’t say enough about the incredibly talented creative team, cast, orchestra and crew. I am so happy our work was collectively recognized with the Best Musical nomination.”

Jason Howland, Orchestrations, Shucked: “I am thrilled to be nominated for my work as an orchestrator on Shucked! Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark’s songs are fantastic, and the combination of working with them and Jack O’Brien, Robert Horn and Sarah O’Gleby has been an absolute joy. You can feel that joy coming back to us every night in spades from the audiences who are laughing and cheering 8 times a week at the Nederlander theater. I am so proud of this team, our producer Mike Bosner, and this cast! Get Shucked!”

Emilio Sosa, Costume Design, Ain’t No Mo’, and Good Night, Oscar: “I’m completely floored by this amazing acknowledgement by my peers. I truly love what I do and hope to continue to add to the fabric of inclusion and diversity in our community. Go Theater!!!!”

Scott Lehrer and Alex Neumann, Sound Design/Musical, Into the Woods: “We’re so pleased to have been nominated for this incandescent production working with such a great creative team. We especially thank our collaborator Music Director Rob Berman and his whole music department.”

May Day 2023 has nevertheless brought with it a palpable sense of Spring reverie and renewal—not least of all in movie theaters and on streaming platforms. The freshly-launched Writers Strike (necessary and overdue) will no doubt result in some crinkling of the garden hose of fresh content, but that’s for future content consumers to worry about. Where You Can Watch: Theaters

Director: Nicole Holofcener

Cast: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tobias Menzies, Michaela Watkins, Arian Moayed

Speaking out. Princess Anne voiced her opinion on the idea of a “slimmed-down” monarchy ahead of her brother King Charles III‘s coronation.

Royal experts have long claimed that the king, 74, intends to take on more responsibilities as the new monarch — as will his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, and his eldest son and heir apparent, Prince William, and William’s wife, Princess Kate. A more streamlined Firm would also be cost efficient as it would cut down on royal costs and save taxpayers money.

Several days before Charles’ coronation, Anne, 72, gave a rare interview with Canadian public broadcaster CBC and revealed she is not in favor of the idea of a “slimmed-down” monarchy.

“Well, I think the ‘slimmed-down’ [comment] was said in a day when there were a few more people around … [to] make that seem like a justifiable comment,” the princess explained. “It doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing, I would say. I’m not quite sure what else we can do.”

Charles’ younger son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, famously made headlines in 2020 when they stepped down from their posts as senior royals. The Sussexes further cemented their separation from the royal family — with whom they have been at odds for years — as they moved from the U.K. to the U.S. to raise their children in California. The Archewell cofounders share son Prince Archie, 3, and daughter Lilibet, 23 months.

In March 2022, six months before Queen Elizabeth II‘s death, royal expert Jonathan Sacerdoti exclusively told Us Weekly that Charles “will make some changes” as monarch, noting, “It’s always been rumored that he wants to slim down the working royals at the core of the family.”

Sacerdoti explained that Charles will “formalize the slimming down” so that it doesn’t just seem like the “result of circumstances.”

Charles and Camilla, 75, will formally be crowned king and queen, respectively, as they celebrate their coronation on Saturday, May 6. The Prince and Princess of Wales — along with their three children: Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 — will all be on hand to mark the historical occasion, as will Prince Harry, 38. Meghan, for her part, will stay home in California with Archie and Lilibet as Charles’ youngest grandson celebrates his 4th birthday.

While Charles was disappointed that the Duchess of Sussex, 41, is not able to attend the ceremony — the ruler was “hoping the coronation would be a chance to better connect and maintain healing between them,” a source exclusively told Us last month — he is happy his youngest son will be there.

Prince William Role in King Charles III's Coronation Revealed 2

“King Charles is sad Meghan cannot attend but is thrilled [Prince] Harry will be in attendance,” a second insider shared.

A third source noted, “As much as Meghan appreciates the invite to the coronation, she wouldn’t miss her son’s birthday for the world. Despite being the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan is a mom first.”

Snap took the wraps off new advertising initiatives at its 2023 NewFronts presentation for marketers in New York — including revealing a new test of sponsored links in My AI, which can deliver ads based on a user’s conversation with the chatbot.

The company, which averaged 383 million daily active users in Q1, last month announced the rollout of the artificial intelligence-powered My AI chatbot to all Snapchat users. While it’s still early days, Snap says My AI has the potential to deliver more relevant content and experiences across the app — and execs told NewFronts attendees the company is experimenting with sponsored links in My AI.

In addition, Snap announced First Story, a new takeover offering that lets advertisers reserve the first video ad that Snapchat users see between their Friend Stories, with a U.S. potential daily reach of more than 50 million users. According to the company, Warner Bros. has booked the first global First Story takeover campaign for “The Flash,” set to hit theaters June 16.

The company also said it is now selling ads in Spotlight — the app’s user-generated content section — to all advertisers globally, and it has launched the Snap Star Collab Studio in the U.S., designed to make it easier for brands and creators to work together on sponsored deals.

On the partnerships front, the company announced a deal with NBCUniversal that will bring custom content to Snapchat from the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games. The content will include daily Snapchat Stories at the Olympics and Paralympics, as well as AR Lenses in the Snapchat Camera and content from a roster of Snap Stars on the ground in Paris. Snap also said it will present exclusive content for this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup across Snapchat’s Stories, Spotlight and Camera.

“Snapchat is all about real relationships, and where over 750 million people come every month to build connections and have fun with friends, families and their favorite creators,” said Rob Wilk, Snap’s president of Americas, who joined the company from Microsoft last month. “We’re thrilled to share at NewFronts how those real relationships drive real influence for brands as we announce new innovations and features across Stories, Spotlight, Creators, My AI and more.”

Snapchat’s My AI experience can suggest relevant AR Lenses, recommend places from the Snap Map and, coming soon for Snapchat+ subscribers, will respond to Snaps with unique generative images. During the NewFronts 2023 presentation, the company shared an early look at how it’s exploring more ways to enhance My AI; for example, surfacing mobile video powered by conversational intent.

Snap has conduced early testing of sponsored links in My AI but didn’t identify partners it has been working with. To determine if a My AI conversation is eligible for an ad, Snap runs safety checks to detect abuse, policy violations and content sensitivity.

The company provided some examples of how the sponsored My AI links work. If a Snapchatter is talking about a video game with the bot, they may receive a sponsored link for a similar game from a retailer. Or, if you’re having a conversation with My AI about what to have for dinner, you may receive a link sponsored by a local restaurant or a food delivery app.

Meanwhile, the ads that Snap is selling for Spotlight will initially be served as automatic placements interspersed within UGC content. Advertisers can manage their placements within Spotlight via Snapchat Ads Manager. According to the company, more than 350 million Snapchat users watch Spotlight content each month and in Q1, total time spent watching Spotlight content rose 170% year-over-year.

The Snap Star Creator Collab is touted as a turnkey service available in the U.S. for brands to partner with Snap Stars (Snapchat’s top creators and public figures). The Collab Studio will offer managed service production from four initial production partners: Studio71, Beeline by Brat TV, Influential and Whalar. Over the course of 2023, Snap says it plans to roll out additional tools that will improve the ways brands and creators collaborate on Snapchat.

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinksi went after Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley for criticizing President Joe Biden’s age last week.

“The former South Carolina governor said Biden is likely to die in office if he is reelected,” Brzezinksi summarized. “Who does this? I’m sorry, it just seems really untoward.”

The “Morning Joe” team compared the criteria for Haley’s long-called for “competency tests” for older politicians — specifically those over the age of 75 — with the age of former president Donald Trump, who is also over 75.

Haley went for Biden’s age of 80 in an interview with Fox News.

“He announced that he’s running again in 2024, and I think that we can all be very clear and say with a matter of fact that if you vote for Joe Biden you really are counting on a President Harris,” she said. “Because the idea that he would make it until 86 years old is not something that I think is likely.”

“I wish Joe Biden the best of health, but it’s only sensible to consider the reality of an already slipping president serveing through his mid-80s,” Haley added.

Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates told NBC News, “As you know, we don’t directly respond to campaigns from here. But honestly, I forgot she was running.”

Brzezinski and company also dissected the Republican strategy to shape a vote for Biden into a vote for Kamala Harris because “Joe Biden is hard to hate.”

“They’ve struggled, the hardcore extremists, to have a message that’s anti Joe Biden and nasty enough to really resonate,” Elise Jordan said. “And so they know that Kamala Harris isn’t as popular as Joe Biden also and she’s unpopular. among Republican primary voters.”

Biden announced his campaign for re-election last week. The “Morning Joe” guests pointed out that Trump is only three years younger than Biden.

A story about choice, independence, and action in the face of uncertainty, Kitchen Brigade is so much more than a film about cooking. And if you simply came to watch people cook, no worries, there’s certainly no shortage in that department either. This eccentric culinary adventure made me put down my notebook long enough to truly savor every aspect of its ninety-minute runtime, and rest assured, it doesn’t disappoint. Directed by French filmmaker Louis-Julien Petit and written by Petit, Liza Benguigui, and Sophie Bensadoun, the film doesn’t explain much beyond its opening premise.

Disgruntled and unsure, sous-chef Cathy Marie (played beautifully by Audrey Lamy) leaves her job at a gourmet restaurant to pursue her dreams of becoming a head chef. In that pursuit, she finds work at a local migrant shelter to discover her passion for cooking is only equaled by a desire to help others. Run by Lorenzo Cardi (François Cluzet) and Sabine (Chantal Neuwirth), the shelter looks to protect young, downtrodden men from being deported out of the country on account of their citizenship. Standard fair, all things considered.

Dropped into the action, we move through the events much like life itself, sporadically and without warning. Yet from sets to costumes to color, each element of Kitchen Brigade works in tandem, like the tenets of a great dish, to deliver one hell of a cinematic experience. Fleshed-out characters and believable relationships make this story sing, while conversational dialogue grounds the film in a realism sorely missed from other titles of the same genre. Cathy slowly begins to enjoy her work, and by teaching the migrant youth to cook, she irreversibly changes their (along with hers) lives in the process.

“…finds work at a local migrant shelter to discover her passion for cooking is only equaled by a desire to help others.”

As a visual journey, the film goes beyond talking heads to use the medium of film for its intended purpose: motion pictures. It’s beautiful. As a lesson in empathy, this movie communicates a long-standing fact of life: make the best of what you have. Fear and rejection are all a part of the journey, and overcoming them happens as much as it does without.

Where it stumbles comes by way of the ending. A few of the initial set-ups and struggles are denied a conclusion, satisfying or not. In a way, though, that could be seen as the point the film is trying so desperately to make. Life is messy, it happens whether we like it or not, and all we can do is hold on for the ride.

Kitchen Brigade tells us to take risks, be brave, and cook like hell along the way. That is if you can cook. If not, just get someone to do it for you and focus on the life stuff instead.

A story about choice, independence, and action

According to the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 press release, Miley Cyrus’ Mainframe from Guardians 2 has been recast in the upcoming film.

The pop star lent her talent to the disembodied voice that played from a helmet back in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but did not return for the 2023 movie; the reason why appears to be unknown.

According to the official press release for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Miley Cryus’ MCU character Mainframe, who Cyrus voiced in Guardians 2’s post-credits in an uncredited role, will now be played by Loki‘s Tara Strong in Vol. 3.

Marvel Studios

Tara Strong, a veteran voice actress who has played dozens of popular animated characters like The Fairly OddParents’ Timmy Turner and Loki’s Miss Minutes, will presumably have at least a somewhat bigger role in Vol. 3 than Cyrus had in Vol. 2, considering the singer’s entire role was limited to one line in response to Stallone’s Stakar: “I miss you guys so much!”

The Ravager Team
Marvel Studios

Mainframe appeared as part of Yondu’s team of Ravagers, led by Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar Ogord, in the second post-credits sequence of Vol. 2. The star-studded team also featured Michelle Yeoh as Aleta Ogord and Ving Rhames as Charlie-27.

Cyrus’ acting career is more closely associated with television than movies thanks to her time as Hannah Montana with Disney Channel, although she did have starring roles in 2009’s Hannah Montana: The Movie and 2010’s The Last Song, both of which were box office hits.

Mainframe
Marvel Studios

While audiences don’t see her face, Mainframe sports a high-pitched, almost customer-service-esque voice, matching the goofiness of the Guardians‘ corner of the MCU.

In the comics, Mainframe — who is male on the page — is an original member of the Guardians of the Galaxy team and was powerful enough to control an entire planet.

Tara Strong Double-Cast In the MCU

With Strong’s previous announcement of being in the movie in a non-Miss Minutes role, fans inevitably were left with questions about people playing multiple roles in the vast MCU.

However, this is not only not a first for the MCU, but not the only double-cast in this movie. Linda Cardellini has played Laura Barton — Hawkeye’s wife — and is playing Lylla the Otter in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Eternals‘ Gemma Chan has appeared in the aforementioned film and in Captain Marvel as an entirely different character, and Martin Starr has appeared as different characters in The Incredible Hulk and the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on Friday, May 5.

Abigail Breslin is one of those stars that used to be everywhere. Following her breakout role in Little Miss Sunshine, which earned her an Academy Award nomination, she became the go-to Hollywood child star and in just three years appeared in six movies. Since growing up she has taken on an interesting selection of roles from science fiction films like Enders Game to dramas like August: Osage County.

She will next be seen as the lead in Miranda’s Victim, a crime drama based on the real kidnapping of Patricia “Trish” Weir by Ernesto Miranda and exploring the origins of the Miranda warning. At just 27, Breslin has had an impressive career filled with iconic movies. Here are Abigail Breslin’s best performances, ranked.

7 Definitely, Maybe

Universal Pictures

Definitely, Maybe was one of the first high-profile projects Breslin booked after Little Miss Sunshine. The film sees her play Maya Hayes, a young girl whose father (Ryan Reynolds) helps her understand his and her mother’s impending divorce by explaining his romantic history and letting her guess which of the women in his story is her mother.

Related: These Are Movies With Great Performances By Young Actors

While Breslin is only present in the framing device of the story, much of the movie rests on her portrayal as a young girl invested in her father’s story. Definitely, Maybe is a charming romantic comedy with a great cast, and shows why Breslin was such an in-demand star.

6 Signs

Signs
Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

While Breslin is most famous for her role in Little Miss Sunshine, four years prior she played the role of Bo Hess in M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs. This was Breslin’s first movie role at just six years old, and she delivers an incredible performance for somebody so young. Her character is instrumental to the plot, as her inability to finish a glass of water and leave them around the house is the ultimate key to defeating the aliens in the end.

5 Kit Kittredge: An American Girl

kit kittredge
Warner Bros. Pictures

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl was a high-profile project, being adapted from the popular American Girl line of toys and books, with Breslin stepping into the role of Kit Kittredge. Released in 2008, Breslin was only twelve when the movie came out, but she was already the headlining star in her own film. She has to carry the production on her shoulders, and for someone so young does it with ease. Kit Kittredge: An American Girl may not have lit the box office on fire, but it is an entertaining wholesome kids’ film with an entertaining mystery.

4 Zombieland

Zombieland
Sony Pictures Releasing

Breslin was one of the most in-demand child actors following her Academy Award nomination in Little Miss Sunshine, but one of her most high-profile projects afterward was 2009’s Zombieland. Breslin plays Little Rock, a sweet 12-year-old who sadly had to grow up quickly in a world filled with zombies. She is the younger sister of Emma Stone’s Wichita, and her best interactions are with Woody Harrelson’s Tallahassee.

Breslin later reprised her role in Zombieland: Double Tap. She was the only member of the cast to have an Oscar nomination when the first movie opened in 2009, but by 2019, her co-star Jessie Eisenberg had been nominated for Best Actor for The Social Network while Emma Stone won Best Actress for La La Land and Woody Harrelson had won the Best Supporting Acting Oscar for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. Zombieland: Doubletap’s marketing played this up highlighting how the cast of this zombie horror comedy was filled with Academy Award nominees and winners.

3 Maggie

Zombieland and Zombieland: Double Tap aren’t the only zombie movies Breslin has been a part of. She also starred in Maggie, a post-apocalyptic horror drama where Breslin plays the titular Maggie. She has been bitten by a zombie and has only a matter of weeks before she is consumed by the infection. She spends the last moments with her family, particularly her father, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Related: End of Days or Maggie: Which Arnold Schwarzenegger Horror Movie is Better?

Most of the attention of Maggie was given to Schwarzenegger as it was outside the actor’s typical action movie roles, but Breslin is certainly not to be overshadowed. The two have incredible chemistry as father and daughter. The depiction of the zombie virus as a slow process digs into some psychological horror of how it transforms a person and how others see you. Breslin is incredible in the role, and while it might not be her most well-known movie, it is one of her best performances.

2 Scream Queens

Scream Queens
Fox

Breslin played the role of Libby Putney, more commonly known as Chanel #5 on the hit television series Scream Queens. She was a member of the social clique known as The Chanels led by Emma Roberts’ Chanel Oberlin. Despite being the right-hand woman, Chanel #5 is often mistreated by the rest of her friends, and Breslin plays the part to great comedic effect. She perfectly captures the put-upon, ditzy, well-intentioned individual that often gets criticized basket case very well. She is funny, sympathetic, and a real top mark in Breslin’s impressive career.

1 Little Miss Sunshine

Abigail Breslin as Olive in Little Miss Sunshine
Fox Searchlight Pictures

While Breslin had been in movies before Little Miss Sunshine, this was the film that put her on the map. Breslin plays Olive Hoover, the youngest member of a dysfunctional family who is a beauty pageant contestant. Breslin was only six years old when she was first cast, and by the time the movie hit theaters, she was ten years old.

Her performance is iconic, and she holds her own with talented co-stars like Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Alan Arkin, Steve Carrell, and Paul Dano. Breslin was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making her the fourth-youngest actress to be nominated in that category. Despite not winning the award, Breslin’s performance is iconic after all these years and led the way to a highly successful career.

Ford is restarting sales of the Mustang Mach E for this year, and your patience has paid off if you missed your chance the first time around. The crossover SUV’s starting price has dropped $3,000 to $42,995 (before a $3,750 federal tax credit) for an RWD Standard Range trim, with a matching price cut for its $45,995 AWD counterpart. They’re also more capable vehicles — all Standard Range variants use lithium iron phosphate batteries that extend their range to 250 miles (RWD) or 226 miles (AWD) while adding 45HP. They now take a more reasonable 33 minutes to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent on a DC fast charger, and they’re more likely to reach maximum capacity through AC charging at home.

The hardware for BlueCruise hands-free highway driving is now standard. You’ll still have to pay to unlock it, but you now get a 90-day trial that lets you activate if and when you’re ready. You can still pay for three years (now $2,100 instead of $1,900) if you’re already sold on the concept. BlueCruise 1.2 adds turn signal-activated lane changes and repositioning that keeps you away from semis and other vehicles that might intrude into your lane.

Higher-end models also have their share of price cuts. The Premium Standard Range models are dropping by $4,000 to reach $46,995 for an RWD configuration and $49,995 for AWD. Buy a California Route 1 AWD Extended Range and you’ll pay $56,995, or $1,000 less. And if you insist on the most powerful model, the GT is down $4,000 to $59,995.

Crucially, there’s a better chance you’ll get a vehicle in the first place. Ford is scaling up Mustang Mach-E production for the second half of the year to help meet demand. The automaker doesn’t say when you can expect to receive a new order, but you may not have to rush to purchase like you did before.

The price cuts come just months after Ford slashed Mustang Mach-E prices up to $5,900, and reflect “lower costs” on Ford’s end. The brand previously said the switch to lithium iron phosphate batteries would help it make 600,000 EVs per year by the end of 2023 by expanding capacity, lowering production costs and reducing the need for shortage-prone resources like nickel.

Ford is also under pressure to drop prices, mind you. Tesla has cut prices multiple times in 2023, and the Model 3 now starts at $40,240. A cheaper, upgraded Mustang Mach-E could keep customers interested, even if it doesn’t get the full $7,500 tax credit that applies to Tesla’s sedan.

Fully generated video is now accessible to the public via Runway Gen-2. Here’s what it can do.

Paul Trillo is no stranger to AI. You might have already seen his work, where he uses generated images, AI-supported rotoscoping, and live-action plates to generate some amazing artistic results.

But AI is speeding ahead in leaps and bounds. Runway Gen-2 is now open to the public in beta, and Trillo was quick to make use of these new tools. Here’s his latest film that is completely AI-generated using this new tech:

Putting Together the Pieces

While Instagram is filled with unique AI-generated compositions, most of them are just that: prompt-generated content. For Trillo, the approach to using AI isn’t a blunt hammer but a super sharp scalpel or a paintbrush (if you want to keep with the artistic theme).

“Gen-2 is the strangest experience I’ve had creating video,” Trillo said. “And I’ve created a lot of strange stuff. It’s a bit like shaking a magic eight ball until you get the answer you’re looking for.”

Trillo’s previously made a short film for GoFundMe using AI. Then, his approach was the same as now but with much more power behind his generated assets.

“The prompting structure works entirely differently, too,” Trillo said. “This [last film] was created by generated images, essentially storyboards, in the open-source version of Stable Diffusion called Automatic1111. I would write a bit of the story and ideas for visuals, generate some images, and then feed that text and imagery into Gen-2.”

Here are some of the stills that Trillo used as storyboard frames. It still blows my mind that none of this is real, but in fact, completely generated by an AI and simple text prompts.

Is the uncanny valley disapearing? Credit: Paul Trillo

“[Runway] Gen 2 breaks down all the elements that are in the reference image and then cross-references it with the text prompt and does its best to amalgamate and reconstruct it into a moving 4-second clip,” Trillo continued to explain. “The results vary, so you have to weed through a lot and continually refine the prompting until you get what you want. You can also use negative prompting to remove unwanted aspects like anatomically incorrect people or blurry faces.”

This whole process took quite a bit of time too. Think of stop motion, but each of your frames generates from reference material that was created using AI-generated images.

“I generated over 400 short clips and edited it down into this short,” Trillo said. “Because you have infinite options and things could always be better, it becomes a bit of a rabbit hole, and you have to pull yourself out at a certain point, or you’ll tinker forever.”

The Goal Was About Finding Limitations

Trillo is a part filmmaker, part tinkerer. For him, creating this project wasn’t just about making a short but about testing how far AI has come and how far it still has to go.

“What I was looking to do with this piece is to take advantage of the aesthetic limitations of the AI,” Trillo explained. “The surreal and often uncanny nature of Gen-2 would be difficult to recreate with cameras or traditional animation. These otherworldly attributes lend themselves to dreams, memories, and alternate realities. I think Gen-2 is the closest to a snapshot of a dream that I have ever seen.”

We happen to agree. It’s eerie how realistic some of the most recent AI generated has become. While some may be scared of the implications this could have, Trillo has a different approach.

A still from 'Thank You For Not Answering'

‘Thank You For Not Answering’Credit: Paul Trillo

“This idea originally spawned out of a previous idea I had for a short before all these AI tools. It felt appropriate to use Gen-2 to reconstruct someone’s memory of the world they lived in because that’s sort of what the AI is doing,” Trillo said. “I’m more interested in exploring what makes these tools different than trying to recreate a Hollywood blockbuster on the cheap.”

If you’d like to check out more of Paul Trillo’s projects and AI experiments, check out his Instagram. For updates on how Runway is evolving its tech, keep an eye on Runway Research.

But what do you think? Is Trillo’s approach to using AI making you want to use it on your next project? Are you worried about these new tools?

Met Gala 2023, a.k.a. fashion’s biggest night out, is finally here. But even though we’re constantly refreshing our feeds to see what our favorite celebs are wearing on the iconic Met steps, it should be noted that we’re equally excited to see all the hair and makeup looks too. There’s no denying that glam can make or break a look—but luckily, this year’s attendees seem to have enlisted the best skin care experts and makeup artists to ace the red carpet.

The biggest makeup trends of the night—which took place on Monday, May 1—are no surprise. Minimalist and clean girl makeup ruled the red carpet, with stars opting for flawless skin and pink cherub cheeks and lips. Celebs like Jennie Kim, Maya Hawke, and Ashley Graham gave us a master class in soft glam and made the case for less is more. Meanwhile, the rockstar girlfriend aesthetic proved alive and well with stars like Adut Akech, Kerry Washington, and Emma Chamberlain wearing heavy kohl-lined eyes, black eyeshadow, and lipsticks that would make Jenny Humphrey proud.

Without the staff of writers at “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” the show would be called “The Late Show with a guy rambling about ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and boats for an hour,” host Stephen Colbert joked Monday as he expressed support for the Writers Guild of America ahead of its strike.

In preparation for the news — which ultimately came down late Monday with the WGA strike moving forward — the late night host then took a moment to predict some upcoming headlines and debut jokes that will likely land in the coming weeks.

The staff prepared news stories “that we’re pretty sure could happen in the next couple of weeks,” Colbert said, before giving a proposed update on the legal battle between Disney and Florida governor Ron DeSantis.

“In Florida, Disney has prevailed in his first amendment lawsuit against Ron DeSantis,” the host said. “As part of the settlement, DeSantis performed three months of community service poop-scooping after Sully from ‘Monsters, Inc.’”

At the White House, Colbert said, “Joe Biden has officially announced he’s running for reelection in 2024. Yes, I know why he already did that. But he keeps doing it. And that’s one of the reasons why people are so worried.”

The host also took a shot at former president Donald Trump. “Adding to his list of legal troubles, the former president has been indicted for using child labor at Mar-a-Lago, but in his defense it’s nearly impossible to find anyone willing to play with Eric,” he joked.

Colbert also took a shot at the industry. “In the world of entertainment, the Barbie movie has broken box office records thanks to a steamy, full frontal scene where you can see all of Ken’s smooth lump.”

In support of the WGA strike, Colbert joked that it “means that writers might have to do something totally against their nature. Go outside.”

Noting that he’s a member of WGA, Colbert displayed a photo gallery where he joined two dozen writers from his show. “They’re so important to our show,” he said.

“This negotiation impacts our whole staff,” he continued. “of course, who worked so hard to bring you this show every night which is why everybody including myself hopes both sides reach a deal. But I also think that the writers demands are not unreasonable. I’m a member of the Guild. I support collective bargaining this nation owes so much to unions.”

2023 Tony Predictions:
Best Actor in a Play

Marc J. Franklin

Weekly Commentary: The race for lead actor in a play has so many strong contenders it’s tough to nail down. Both Corey Hawkins and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II won raves for “Topdog/Underdog,” but Hawkins seems most likely to get a nod. Wendell Pierce (“Death of a Salesman”) is poised to be recognized for creating a Willy Loman seen through new eyes, and the well-liked Stephen McKinley Henderson’s performance as the central character in “Between Riverside and Crazy” was so naturally authentic he made it look easy. Marcel Spears is giving a similarly genuine and appealing performance as a contemporary Hamlet in “Fat Ham.”

Oscar Isaac also wows in “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” — but then, so did John David Washington in “The Piano Lesson.” “Life of Pi” star Hiran Abeysekera has an Oliver in his back pocket, and Sean Hayes both transforms as an actor in “Good Night, Oscar” and also shows off his impressive chops as a piano player.

Any of these actors could reasonably grab a spot in the race.

Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot has died, his longtime publicist, Victoria Lord, told CBC News. Lightfoot was 84 years old.

Lightfoot, a giant of Canadian music and prolific songwriter, contributed heavily to the folk scene in the 1960s and ’70s. One of his biggest hits was the 1976 single “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” In 2003, he received the Companion of the Order of Canada—the highest honor the country bestows upon civilians. He had a wide range of admirers within the music scene, including Neil Young and Tom Cochrane, and Lightfoot also had his songs covered by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley.

Born in Orillia, Ontario, in 1938, Lightfoot began performing in his grade school years. He learned piano as a preteen and taught himself to play guitar in high school. He moved to California to study jazz composition in college, but grew homesick and returned home to Toronto shortly thereafter. In 1960, he joined Swinging Eight, a vocal group that often appeared on the TV series Country Hoedown. He also formed the short-lived duo the Two Tones with Terry Whalen. Lightfoot’s songwriting shifted after he heard Bob Dylan in the early ’60s. Inspired by his poetic lyrics, Lightfoot started to compose more personal songs, eventually catching the ear of manager Albert Grossman, who went on to sign him.

Folk groups like Peter, Paul and Mary and country artists like Marty Robbins were among those who recorded some of Lightfoot’s earlier songwriting efforts like “Early Morning Rain,” “For Lovin’ Me,” and “Ribbons of Darkness.” Based on his early success, he released his debut album, Lightfoot!, in 1966 and followed it with three more studio LPs for United Artists. In 1976, he released his popular Summertime Dream LP, which contained the single “Wreck.”

Lightfoot often kept a capo on the second fret of his guitar to stay within his vocal range, pushing himself to get creative with the songs he could write within that key. Most of his collaborators and studio session musicians were happy to adjust, too, much to his bewilderment. “I could never come to terms with the fact that I would have to walk into a recording studio and tell a guitar player to get ready to play in the key of F# or the key of B. I was embarrassed about that,” he told American Songwriter in 2008. “I once had to ask Vassar Clements if he could please tune his fiddle down a half tone so I could play a song in E flat. And he just did it! He just tuned ’er down and away we went.”

Toronto’s Hot Docs film festival has decided that Canadian media producer Bonnie Thompson will be the recipient of this year’s prestigious Don Haig Award. Thompson is the producer behind Cam Christiansen’s “Echo of Everything,” a feature length documentary exploring the power of music, which will have its world premiere at Hot Docs’ 30th-anniversary festival, on now until May 7.

The Don Haig Award is presented to an outstanding Canadian independent producer with a feature-length film at the festival, with the recipient being selected by a jury of independent filmmakers. The award recognizes creative vision and entrepreneurship, as reflected in the recipient’s body of work, as well as a track record of mentoring emerging Canadian filmmakers. Thompson will be presented with a $5,000 cash prize, courtesy of the Don Haig Foundation.

Thompson said: “As a producer, it’s been a privilege to experience incredibly diverse worlds and communities and help bring these stories to screens for audiences. It’s especially meaningful to have worked again with filmmaker Cam Christiansen, who has created a striking documentary of stunning images and emotional power in ‘Echo of Everything.’”

Bonnie Thompson

Thompson produces independently with her company Dreaming Bird Productions. She worked with the Northwest Studio of the National Film Board of Canada – producing from 2001 to 2018 – on documentary, animation and interactive projects. She has “a commitment to productions that have strong social issue components, push boundaries in both form and content, and which give voice to under-represented communities,” according to the festival.

Her productions have received numerous awards and nominations, including Gary Burns and Jim Brown’s “Radiant City,” winner of the best feature documentary at the 2008 Genie Awards; Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis’ animated short “Wildlife,” nominated for a 2012 Academy Award; the interactive documentary “Bear 71,” directed by Leanne Allison and Jeremy Mendes, winner of a 2013 Webby Award, the 2012 FWD Site of the Year Award, and the 2012 CSA Award for best web program; Alethea Arnaquq-Baril’s feature documentary “Angry Inuk,” winner of the 2016 Hot Docs audience award, best documentary award at imagineNATIVE, and Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award; PBS NOVA’s “Transplanting Hope, directed by Niobe Thompson, nominated for an Emmy; and Tasha Hubbard’s “nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up,” the opening night film and winner of best Canadian documentary at Hot Docs in 2019, and winner of the 2020 CSA best feature length documentary.

Thompson is currently producing Wendy Hill Tout’s “Insanity,” and executive producing Tasha Hubbard’s “Singing Back the Buffalo.” She is a board member of the Alberta Media Producer’s Industry Association, from which she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

The award will be presented at the Hot Docs Awards presentation on May 6 at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

Toronto’s Hot Docs film festival has decided

WASHINGTON — Widespread loneliness in the U.S. poses health risks as deadly as smoking a dozen cigarettes daily, costing the health industry billions of dollars annually, the U.S. surgeon general said Tuesday in declaring the latest public health epidemic.

About half of U.S. adults say they’ve experienced loneliness, Dr. Vivek Murthy said in a report from his office.

“We now know that loneliness is a common feeling that many people experience. It’s like hunger or thirst. It’s a feeling the body sends us when something we need for survival is missing,” Murthy told The Associated Press in an interview. “Millions of people in America are struggling in the shadows, and that’s not right. That’s why I issued this advisory to pull back the curtain on a struggle that too many people are experiencing.”

The declaration is intended to raise awareness around loneliness but won’t unlock federal funding or programming devoted to combatting the issue.

Research shows that Americans, who have become less engaged with worship houses, community organizations and even their own family members in recent decades, have steadily reported an increase in feelings of loneliness. The number of single households has also doubled over the last 60 years.

But the crisis deeply worsened when COVID-19 spread, prompting schools and workplaces to shut their doors and sending millions of Americans to isolate at home away from relatives or friends.

Read More: How To Make Friends As an Adult

People culled their friend groups during the coronavirus pandemic and reduced time spent with those friends, the surgeon general’s report finds. Americans spent about 20 minutes a day in person with friends in 2020, down from 60 minutes daily nearly two decades earlier.

The loneliness epidemic is hitting young people, ages 15 to 24, especially hard. The age group reported a 70% drop in time spent with friends during the same period.

Loneliness increases the risk of premature death by nearly 30%, with the report revealing that those with poor social relationships also had a greater risk of stroke and heart disease. Isolation also elevates a person’s likelihood for experiencing depression, anxiety and dementia.

The surgeon general is calling on workplaces, schools, technology companies, community organizations, parents and other people to make changes that will boost the country’s connectedness. He advises people to join community groups and put down their phones when they’re catching up with friends; employers to think carefully about their remote work policies; and health systems to provide training for doctors to recognize the health risks of loneliness.

Technology has rapidly exacerbated the loneliness problem, with one study cited in the report finding that people who used social media for two hours or more daily were more than twice as likely to report feeling socially isolated than those who were on such apps for less than 30 minutes a day.

Murthy said social media is driving the increase in loneliness in particular. His report suggests that technology companies roll out protections for children especially around their social media behavior.

“There’s really no substitute for in-person interaction,” Murthy said. “As we shifted to use technology more and more for our communication, we lost out on a lot of that in-person interaction. How do we design technology that strengthens our relationships as opposed to weaken them?”

Conan O’Brien is launching a new effort in the streaming wars, partnering with Samsung to launch Conan O’Brien TV, a free ad-supported streaming channel (also called “FAST”) that will be exclusive to devices from the Korean tech giant.

Conan O’Brien TV will debut in June on Samsung TV Plus, and will be comprised of over 100 hours of programming pulled from O’Brien’s late night shows on NBC and TBS, including interviews, sketches and other comedy bits. As with other similar channels, the content will run as a linear feed, broken up into 30 minute compilations.

O’Brien’s FAST channel will be exclusive to Samsung, at least for now, giving its ad-supported platforms a unique offering in a crowded marketplace. Samsung is hosting its newfront presentation to advertisers Tuesday morning in New York.

The company already hosts FAST channels from Kevin Hart’s LOL! Network and other content providers.

“We are thrilled to expand the reach of the show in partnership with one of the best brands in the world,” said Jeff Ross, O’Brien’s executive producer, in a statement. “Samsung TV Plus is the ideal home for Conan’s first FAST channel, given the scale and credibility of the service within the FAST sector. It allows us to instantly share some of the best moments of the show with our loyal fans and to reach new ones.”

O’Brien ended his late night run at TBS in 2021, though he said at the time he would develop a format for HBO Max, which has not yet materialized in final form.

he subsequently leaned into his Team Coco audio business, selling that to SiriusXM for $150 million last year, and launching his own channel there.

Here’s your first look at Gran Turismo, the big-screen, live-action adaptation of the popular racing video game from Sony and PlayStation Productions.

The pic stars David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou.

Plot is based on the true story of British racing driver Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo gamer whose skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race-car driver.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp with a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, the film is produced by Doug Belgrad, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Dana Brunetti. Executive producers are Kazunori Yamauchi, Herman Hulst, Hall, and Matthew Hirsch.

Sony previously shared footage from the pic at Cinemacon last week. Harbour and Bloom also came to the stage to introduce the first look, with Harbour quipping that his first reaction on being asked to join the project was: “How are you guys going to make a movie out of a racing game?… There’s no story in the game. That’s when Neill told me about Jann Mardenborough and his incredible true story.”

The trailer features Harbour’s racing coach character as skeptical that gamers could ever be real race car drivers, telling Bloom’s Nissan exec, “Your kids are scrawny little gamers.” As training progresses, so does Jann, but he’s warned, “If you miss a line on the game, you reset. If you miss it on the track, you could die.”

Salman Khan and Sunny Leone

A video of Salman Khan evading a question about Sunny Leone is going viral.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was seen swiftly dodging a question about ‘sexy’ Sunny Leone in a video that has now gone viral. The video, taken at a launch of a bike, surfaced on Instagram and has fans talking. In the video, a journalist was heard asking Salman if he would take Sunny Leone on a bike ride but Salman averted the question by ‘confusing’ Sunny Leone with Parineeti Chopra.

“Salman aapki bike ka colour blue hai, isey mujhe Sunny Leone ki saree ka colour yaad aa gaya,” the journalist said, referring to a video in which Salman helped Sunny drape a blue saree. “Bike bhi sexy, Sunny bhi sexy toh kya ek ride par le jayenge?” To which the actor replied, “Parineeti kaha sexy hai woh toh sweet hai.” And he ignored the question. Back in 2014, Salman had taught Sunny how to drape a saree during the Star Guild Award show. The duo shared funny moments on the stage.

Fans rushed to the comment section and shared their thoughts about the video. One of the fans wrote, “Bhai ke kaan sirf utna he sunte hai jitni zaroorat hai.” Another wrote, “Parineeti be like – maine kya bigad hai.”

This week, 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike. Since talks with Hollywood studios began March 20, the two sides have failed to reach an accord on a new three-year film TV contract to replace one that expired Monday.

A long strike could have a ripple effect on not only film and television production but also the Southern California economy. The impact is also likely to be felt in Georgia, New York, New Mexico and other production hubs nationwide. Without writers, scripted television shows will struggle to continue filming and live late-night shows will stop immediately.

Here is a primer on what to know about the union’s first strike in 15 years.

How did we get here?

The roots of the current labor conflict were planted during the previous writers strike in 2007-08, the first big clash over so-called new media. The rapid growth of Netflix and other online platforms since then has dramatically changed how entertainment is consumed, and how writers are paid for creating that entertainment.

Even as streaming content has boomed, however, writers argue that the new models have streadily eroded their pay and the ability to earn a living in Hollywood.

There were early signs of tensions.

WGA leaders have been signaling for some time that this bargaining cycle would be tough because, they say, so many guild members are working at minimum pay levels.

In an interview with The Times in 2021, WGA President Meredith Stiehm described the situation as a financial emergency.

“It’s sort of like a turning point, the way it was in 2007 with the internet,” Stiehm said.

Less than a week before negotiations began with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on March 20, WGA leaders warned of an “existential” threat to writers.

They presented to the studios a package of demands — from boosting minimum pay levels to higher streaming residuals — valued at nearly $600 million.

By early April, the WGA said the progress in talks was not sufficient, and it called for members to vote in favor of a strike authorization. The WGA strike authorization was granted by an historic margin — 98% to 2% — (among 9,218 ballots cast.)

Writers returned to the bargaining table on April 14. Still, by the midnight Pacific time deadline on May 1, there was no deal to be had.

So what are the main sticking points for writers?

In short, writers argue that their pay hasn’t kept up with the rapid pace of technological change.

They say they are working for shorter periods of time and having to find several gigs a year to make ends meet. Typically, broadcast networks would order about 20 episodes for shows that would be worked on over 10 months. But in recent years, studios have more often focused on streaming short-order series with eight to 10 episodes.

In particular, writers have complained that residuals —the royalties they collect when the shows they create are re-aired — are much lower in the age of streaming than they were when working for broadcast networks, when successful shows would run for years in syndication.

Another sticking point is the growing use of of mini-rooms, where small groups of writers lay out the foundation of a series before it goes into production and are often paid near minimum levels.

Half of series writers now earn scale (the minimum episodic or weekly rate) versus 33% during the 2013-14 season, according to a recent WGA survey. Median screenwriter pay hasn’t risen since 2018 and, adjusted for inflation, has fallen 14% in the last five years. And the median weekly pay for writer-producers declined 23% over the last decade when adjusting for inflation, the union said.

What are the rules for writers during the strike?

The WGA released a long list of instructions to members last month about what work they can or cannot do. Film, TV, animation and fiction podcasts will be affected.

During a strike, a WGA member or their agent cannot meet with or negotiate with the studios and may not write or sell or option material, according to rules sent to members viewed by The Times.

Additionally, a writer can’t revise existing work, start a new project or deliver work to a struck company, whether they work from home or an office. Writers can’t even discuss work with studios, and they must save a digital date-stamped copy of all un-produced literary material within 24 hours of when the strike begins.

Even writer-producers or writer-directors are heavily limited in the work they can do during production and post-production as showrunners. For example, they can’t make cuts for time, make minor changes to dialogue or even change stage directions.

Although the WGA can’t stop members from doing purely production work, they are encouraging members not to do any such work in a show of support. During the 2007-08 strike, many showrunners refused to do any work for struck companies, according to the WGA.

Who is on strike?

So far, only the 11,500 member of the WGA are on strike, but that could change pending the outcome of other potentially contentious negotiations.

SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America have contracts that run through June 30, meaning their members cannot legally join in any job walkout until after the contracts expire.

However, the Teamsters have already said they will joint WGA members on the picket lines. The 6,500 members of Local 399 include drivers and transport dispatchers, location managers and casting directors.

“Teamsters local 399, as well as the rest of Teamster locals across the country, within the motion picture industry, are in full support of WGA’s fight,” Lindsay Dougherty, secretary general of Hollywood Teamsters Local 399 told The Times. “We will definitely be honoring the picket lines.”

SAG-AFTRA, the DGA and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, which represents crews, also issued statements expressing strong support for the WGA, although the DGA told its members last month that under their current contract, employers could replace them if they choose not to work.

The solidarity stands in contrast to previous cycles of bargaining, when other guilds sometimes sparred with the WGA over strategy, and it may strengthen the writers’ leverage in negotiations.

How long will this strike last?

No one knows, but history suggests it won’t be over quickly.

The longest WGA strike was in 1988 and lasted 153 days. The last WGA strike, in 2007-08, lasted 100 days.

The contract and terms that the two sides have to renegotiate — such as sorting through byzantine residual calculations across a range of work and distribution platforms — is complex and time-consuming.

Macro conditions do not point to a quick resolution. It’s not clear how willing studios will be to cut a deal at a time when many entertainment companies such as Walt Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are being roiled by cutbacks and layoffs as Wall Street investors pressure them to increase the profitability of their streaming platforms.

Some studios may even view a walkout as an opportune time to scrap unprofitable writer deals through so-called force-majeure clauses in contracts.

A walkout could last weeks or months, depending on how negotiations play out with other Hollywood unions.

AMPTP has to start negotiations with the DGA on May 10, followed by SAG-AFTRA, which is scheduled to begin bargaining a month later.

We’ve known since Disney’s Investor Day presentation in December 2020 that the House of Mouse has big plans for the Alien franchise as a streaming series for FX. The studio even tapped Fargo’s Noah Hawley to develop it. But since then, we’ve heard very little about this show. Our latest development is a big one, though. According to Deadline, the Alien series has recently cast Sydney Chandler as one of its leads. However, nothing more is known about the role at this time.

Warner Bros.

While speaking to Esquire about his novel Anthem, Hawley spilled a little more tea about the series. And he gave fans of the Xenomorph some things to ponder. Here’s what Hawley had to say about his Alien TV series:

“It’s set on Earth of the future. At this moment, I describe that as Edison versus Westinghouse versus Tesla. Someone’s going to monopolize electricity. We just don’t know which one it is. In the movies, we have this Weyland-Yutani Corporation, which is clearly also developing artificial intelligence. But what if there are other companies trying to look at immortality in a different way? With cyborg enhancements or transhuman downloads? Which of those technologies is going to win? It’s ultimately a classic science fiction question: does humanity deserve to survive?”

So as we guessed before, the Weyland-Yutani Corp., otherwise known simply as “the Company,” are likely the new Alien series’ “Big Bads.” But we’re still unclear about a lot of things. For starters, how will all this tie into the ongoing Xenomorph saga? After all, they call this show Alien, not “Android.” So we’re going to have to see the acid-blooded bad boys at some point. Otherwise, it will disappoint a great deal of very disappointed fans out there. Another big question is when does the Alien TV series happen with respect to the movies?

Prometheus takes place in 2089, while Alien: Covenant takes place in 2104. The original Alien takes place exactly 100 years from now, in 2122. The events of Aliens occur some 57 years later in 2179, with Alien Resurrection finishing things a whopping two hundred years later. And Weyland-Yutani exists in all these eras. So the new series could fall anywhere in the timeline. But now we know a little bit more about that. FX Chief John Landgraf shared an update on the Alien series at the TCA winter panel for the network.

He said, “Alien takes place before Ripley. It’s the first story that takes place in the Alien franchise on Earth. So, it takes place on our planet. Right near the end of this century, we’re in — so 70-odd years from now. Ripley won’t be a part of it or any of the other characters of Alien other than the alien itself.” That’s right folks, no Sigourney Weaver. We’re sad, on the one hand, but excited for more specificity on the other.

Really though, all we want is one good chestburster scene. Is that too much to ask? The Alien series is now officially in preproduction.

We’ve known since Disney’s Investor

The first theatrical trailer for the Gran Turismo movie has been released.

The film, which is set to release in August, is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, who won the GT Academy esports tournament in 2011 and is now a professional racer competing in the Japanese Super GT series.

Archie Madekwe (Midsommar) will play Mardenborough in the movie, which also stars Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Djimon Hounsou and Geri Horner.

You can see the trailer below:

Gran Turismo – official trailer

The Gran Turismo movie is directed by Neill Blomkamp (Demonic, Chappie, Elysium, District 9) from a script written by Jason Hall (American Sniper) and Zach Baylin (King Richard).

It retells the story of Mardenborough’s journey as he takes on the GT Academy contest, which was run by Nissan and Sony between 2008 and 2016, and gave winners a place in Nissan’s Driver Development Programme.

PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan are among the film’s producers, while Gran Turismo creator and Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi is serving as an executive producer.

As of November 2022, the Gran Turismo series had sold 90 million units since the release of the first game in 1997.

“This result is something that could not be accomplished by ourselves alone,” Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi said on the PlayStation Blog.

“Behind that 90 million figure, there are all the people of the media who conveyed the allure of Gran Turismo to their readers.

“There are the people of PlayStation who sold GT for us around the world with passion, and there is the incredible amount of support from the retailers who interfaced with our users. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all of them for their support.

“And above all else, I can’t ever thank enough the GT users and people of the GT community who have played our new titles, which at times could be said to have been very experimental.”
