Visa / Mastercard От 1 до 3 часов Отсутствует
Skrill, Neteller

Visa / MasterCard

“The Debut” ended London Film Festival on a high note Sunday night as director Jesse Eisenberg and star Julianne Moore gushed over each other to a packed audience at the Royal Festival Hall.

“I mean, this movie stars my favorite person, Julianne Moore,” Eisenberg began as the duo came onstage to introduce the musical comedy. “But ironically, strangely, it’s the story of my life.”

Written and directed by Eisenberg, “The Debut” stars Moore as Mona Friedman, a shy New Jersey housewife who auditions for a part in her local theater’s production of a fictional musical called “Nosy Neighbors.” After she’s cast in the supporting role of Miss Danielle, Friedman’s life begins to unravel as she becomes more consumed with playing the part and falls under the spell of director Jerry Blankenbuehler (Paul Giamatti).

Eisenberg said he started doing community theater when he was “7 years old and miserable,” and it changed his life forever. “I wanted to write about that experience in my life, but I could only picture Julianne, to the point where I was writing it and she was inspiring me,” he added. “It’s the most thrilling experience to watch her and edit her for two years.”

Moore, wearing a chic black gown, returned the praise. She called “The Debut” an “incredible gift” and said it’s “one of the best scripts I’ve ever read in my entire life.”

“It was such an honor to receive it and such a thrill to go to work every day and to get to do this incredible part with these tremendous actors,” she said, adding of Eisenberg: “He’s a beautiful writer, exemplary director and just a great talent.”

In response, Eisenberg quipped: “I just want to note that the only time I’m called beautiful, it’s about writing.”

Sadly, Eisenberg said that Giamatti could not attend the U.K. premiere as he has COVID-19. “I wish he could be here. He is the greatest guy and you would love to hear him talk,” he said. “Paul’s been my favorite actor since I’m young, Julianne’s been my favorite actress since I’m young.”

Alongside Moore and Giamatti, “The Debut” also stars Eisenberg, Halle Bailey, Colton Ryan and Bonnie Milligan as actors in the musical. Bernadette Peters, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy and Havana Rose Liu round out the cast.

Of acting with his childhood heroes, Eisenberg said it was “the thrill of a lifetime” but also “very strange.”

“I was spending so much time enthralled with them, and then it was like Michael Jordan said, ‘Here, you take the ball!’ And I’m like, ‘What is this thing?’ So it was so distracting to me. I hope to never act alongside them again,” he joked. “I was my worst self.”

“The Debut” premiered at Telluride Film Festival last month, where it earned rave reviews and Oscar buzz for leading lady Moore. In Variety‘s review, chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote: “‘The Debut,’ a small-town-theater comedy rooted in big ideas, is a funny and dizzying mind-bender. It’s like ‘Waiting for Guffman’ made by the Coen brothers at their most rivetingly unhinged.”

“The Debut” is set to hit theaters on Dec. 11 via A24.

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1Written by G. Willow WilsonArt

The Star Trek franchise has a very long history. It started in the 1960s with Star Trek: The Original Series, was revived with a series of movies that ran for decades, and returned to TV in the 1980s with Star Trek: The Next Generation. The last decade has been one of the busiest periods in Star Trek history, with TV shows like Star Trek: Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and Starfleet Academy all blasting off.

At the moment, only Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are still running, and both of those shows will end after their upcoming seasons. But one big-name actor has a new idea. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James McAvoy told host Josh Horowitz about how he once pitched an idea for a Star Trek limited series that almost got made.

The show was called Mutiny On the Stargazer, and it would have explored the early career of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, famously played by Patrick Stewart for seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, not to mention four movies and three seasons of Star Trek: Picard. “That was a whole idea I had I pitched to the Star Trek people as well, and we nearly did it,” McAvoy said. “I’ve got a whole story about an early Picard.”

I had this whole story of a young Picard that I love. I pitched, it was like a one-off standalone season…when he took over as captain of the Stargazer and what actually happened, and the secret he’s been holding his entire career. I just pitched it to them, talking to them, and they were into it, but we had logistical issues that meant we couldn’t do it. But I love that story that I just go to bed and think about it at night.

James McAvoy as Professor X in X-Men: Apocalypse 20th Century Fox

It sounds like this limited series would have drawn on the Star Trek: Stargazer book series by author Michael Jan Friedman, published between 2002 and 2004.

If James McAvoy ever did play a younger version of Jean-Luc Picard, it would be a case of history repeating. McAvoy played a younger version of Professor Charles Xavier in a series of X-Men movies between 2011 and 2019, after Patrick Stewart played the older version of the character starting in X-Men (2000). “All I really want to do in my career is play young versions of Patrick [Stewart],” McAvoy joked.

It’s likely that McAvoy pitched this idea years ago. If Paramount were to make Mutiny On the Stargazer now, McAvoy would be 47 years old, the same age that Patrick Stewart was during the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. So the idea of him playing a younger version of Jean-Luc Picard might be difficult to sell.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will return for its second and final season in March 2027. In the meantime, Patrick Stewart will return as the older version of Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026.

Ghostwire: Tokyo has joined GOG’s Preservation Program, and its GOG version removes Bethesda.NET integration while promising future stability patches as operating systems change, PC Gamer reports.

What the GOG release changes

The change is specific to the GOG release: Bethesda.NET will no longer be integrated, though the game will still provide extra goodies on its first launch. GOG also says it will address stability problems that emerge over time as operating systems evolve, giving the preservation label a practical purpose beyond the launcher difference.

Gameplay from Ghostwire: Tokyo – Image: Ghostwire: Tokyo / Steam

The release does not mark Denuvo’s removal. The anti-tamper software had already been taken out shortly after it was added, so that change predates the GOG version. Ghostwire: Tokyo, Tango Gameworks’ neon-lit action-adventure, originally launched in 2022.

The other identifiable addition is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Game of the Year Edition Deluxe. Its inclusion puts another Bethesda-era RPG under the program’s preservation banner; the game also remains a focus for players exploring new Oblivion mods.

Why the preservation label matters

Ghostwire had attracted more than six million players, according to PC Gamer, which scored the game 72 in a review by contributor Imogen Mellor. Future compatibility support could matter as the hardware and software environment around a 2022 release changes.

Tango Gameworks’ future has also shifted: the studio’s planned closure following Xbox’s move was countered by its acquisition by PUBG owner Krafton, PC Gamer reported. Ghostwire still appears to be published by Bethesda Softworks, so removing Bethesda.NET integration from the GOG version does not mean the game has left that publisher’s orbit.

A separate launcher option for PC players

Players looking specifically to avoid Bethesda.NET integration can opt for the GOG version; the announcement does not establish that other versions have changed. GOG’s ongoing commitment is to patch stability issues as they arise, with no specific future patch schedule provided.

Ghostwire: Tokyo has joined GOG’s Preservation Program,

Jesse Eisenberg has said he was frozen out of studio movies after winning a Razzie for Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

The Razzies — short for Golden Raspberry Awards — are a tongue-in-cheek ceremony that “honor” the supposedly worst films of the year. They are traditionally handed out the night before the Oscars.

Eisenberg, who played arch villain Lex Luther opposite Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, was allocated a worst supporting actor Razzie for his part in the 2016 superhero flick.

Although supposedly lighthearted, the “award” damaged his acting career, Eisenberg admitted during a screen talk Sunday as part of the BFI London Film Festival, causing him to step back from acting and instead lean in to writing and directing. (Eisenberg’s latest directorial effort, “The Debut” starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, is closing LFF Sunday night).

“Listen, a lot of it just came from fear,” he said of his career pivot. “I couldn’t get into movie studio parts anymore because I had won a Raspberry Award from [being in the] ‘Batman’ movie … and I saw the trajectory.”

“If you’re an actor, you’re constantly panicked about ‘Am I on an upslope or a downslope?’” he explained. “Because there’s no plateau. Acting is just this unstable, awful industry where you are either on the treadmill and you’re doing okay and you’re running up or you are yesterday’s news and it’s awful. And if you’re a paranoid person like me, you see it way in advance.”

“So I was like, I’ve got to direct movies. That’s why I started writing them, just to kind of keep my career afloat, really.”

“Batman v Superman,” which opened globally with an impressive $424.1 million box office, took home four Razzies overall, including for worst screenplay, worst sequel and worst screen combo for Cavill and Affleck. Eisenberg has previously said the film’s “poor” reception damaged his career.

At the BFI talk, the actor said his takeaway from the experience was that he shouldn’t star in any more superhero films. “The industry tells you what they want from you,” Eisenberg said. “The industry did not want me to be in a superhero movie, and if you’re smart and self-aware, you learn that quickly. And you know, it’s the unsuccessful actor that goes ‘No, I want to be in more of those.’ It’s not going to happen and they don’t want you there and they wouldn’t have given you a Raspberry Award if they wanted you there. That’s an award for bad acting. And so the industry tells you what it wants and if you want a career in the arts you have to follow the things that you’re being told are liked.”

One role the industry did want to see him reprise was that of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, given Eisenberg was nominated for a best actor Oscar for playing the tech titan in 2010’s “The Social Network,” penned by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher.

Despite that, the actor has been adamant he did not want to return in the recently-released follow-up “The Social Reckoning,” which Sorkin both wrote and directed. He didn’t expand on that decision during his LFF talk, other than to say the “companion movie,” as it has been dubbed, “is quite different.”

He was more open about working with Kieran Culkin in Eisenberg’s sophomore directorial effort “A Real Pain,” which was released in 2024. The movie scored Eisenberg a nod for best screenplay and Culkin a best supporting actor win at last year’s Oscars, but the film could have turned out very differently.

“We didn’t know if Kieran was ever going to show up to Poland,” Eisenberg revealed. “Emma Stone is producing the movie. She personally took him on the plane to Poland [where it was shooting] because we didn’t know if he was going to show up. She sent me a video of him going through customs, saying ‘We are here!’ and then he still was late.”

And Culkin, who’d recently come off HBO’s mega-hit “Succession,” was adamant he wanted Eisenberg to use a similar “spontaneous” shooting style, which had not been part of the plan. “We’re like, what’s best for the movie?” the actor/director recalled as he tried to work out what to do. “And I guess what’s best for the movie is probably following this live wire around because that’s the engine of the movie anyway. If he had a small part, you’d be like, ‘We just have to tell this guy to shut up,’ you know? But he’s the lead… So it was a real learning curve.”

Jesse Eisenberg has said he was frozen

In Norm: The Tale Of Norm Macdonald, director Judd Apatow lovingly identifies and helps to explain the moment that, for many, wound up defining the former Saturday Night Live comedian’s career. A thoughtful and affectionate tribute for the late cult favorite, Norm presents Macdonald’s firing from SNL as the key to understanding his relationship with his audience. Apatow makes his case using a wealth of archival quotes from Macdonald, including his guest appearances on late-night talk shows and Macdonald’s own video podcast series Norm Macdonald Live.

In these sometimes candid and often puckishly misleading clips, Macdonald struggles to redefine himself after he was fired by NBC executive Don Ohlmeyer in 1997 for relentlessly joking that ex-football player O.J. Simpson murdered his wife and her friend Ron Goldman as the anchor of SNL‘s Weekend Update. Over the film, we also get a clearer understanding of Macdonald’s style of humor, which treated listeners like unwitting accessories, whether he was delivering a rambling shaggy-dog routine, like his now-signature moth joke, or an interminably anti-climactic speech, as in his appearance on Bob Saget’s Comedy Central Roast episode.

In Norm, Macdonald says that he preferred to define himself as a stand-up comedian rather than by his four years on SNL. At the same time, his earliest and arguably most formative successes on that show evince the same qualities that made him a great stand-up, like his deadpan delivery and rope-a-dope comic timing. Apatow’s observant and detailed collage suggests that Macdonald’s unruly and confrontational style of humor treated both his colleagues and his audience like they were essential parts of his act. Macdonald was also king of understated overkill and vicious running jokes, so it’s no surprise that many fans associate him with his persistent jabs at Sylvester Stallone’s brutally uncharismatic brother Frank as well as his ongoing and, in hindsight, reckless cracks about Simpson’s guilt.

Then again, that kind of smartass risk-taking was always part of Macdonald’s act, as Apatow successfully argues. Several fellow comedians praise Macdonald for being “disciplined” and refusing to chase what they consider to be easy laughs. Conan O’Brien even paraphrases his own wingman Andy Richter when he says that Macdonald “doesn’t care in a way that frightens me.” That seeming fearlessness is also what drew SNL writer Jim Downey to Macdonald in the first place and convinced Downey that Macdonald would be a perfect fit to host Weekend Update.

But what really made Macdonald’s O.J. jokes uniquely his, as well as the way that he subsequently drew attention to his firing by Ohlmeyer, was a matter of style. Macdonald was playfully elusive and sometimes combatively impersonal, so it’s unsurprising that he relished in pushing the envelope of bad taste well past acceptable limits with jokes about Simpson’s apparent guilt. Macdonald even continued joking about Simpson’s guilt after his acquittal, quipping dryly on Weekend Update that murder is now legal in the state of California. Downey says that SNL creator Lorne Michaels used to object to these jokes on behalf of both Ohlmeyer and Simpson. Those complaints obviously didn’t stop Macdonald and, in fact, seemed to energize him.

Apatow also points out how quick Macdonald’s colleagues were to defend him after Ohlmeyer let him go. In an excerpted clip from The Late Show, Macdonald told David Letterman that his main point of contact with Ohlmeyer was a phone conversation where Ohlmeyer bluntly told Macdonald that he didn’t think he was funny. Letterman also perfectly complements Macdonald’s tone when he says, in a mock aside, that, “Ohlmeyer, who, between you and me, is an idiot.” Between you and me and the millions of viewers at home, of course.

Apatow suggests that his prickly subject was more in control of these post-firing interviews than he let on. He pointedly quotes Macdonald, from an interview with Larry King, where the comedian hastily notes that, “I said nothing against Don Ohlmeyer after being fired. Not one thing.” In the next clip, Apatow shows Macdonald ostensibly defending Ohlmeyer as a “troubled man” by suggesting that the media mogul had a reputation for being a heavy drinker and a sex pest.

Eventually, Ohlmeyer’s name became synonymous with Macdonald’s firing, to the point where, as Apatow reminds us, the Hollywood Reporter obituary for Ohlmeyer ran a subheadline that claimed the NBC West Coast president was “also known for firing Norm Macdonald from ‘SNL.’” The stickiness of that association isn’t surprising, given how frequently Macdonald not only named and shamed Ohlmeyer, but also paraphrased his ex-boss’ snide remark about Macdonald being unfunny. Apatow suggests that this calculated repetition was always part of Macdonald’s act when, in an early scene, Macdonald recalls his own father’s habit of repeating a joke to a captive audience, just because it would land twice as hard the second time around. This same spirit made audiences feel like they were in on the bit whenever Macdonald endlessly repeated running gags, like when he told interviewer after interviewer that he was a deeply closeted gay man, but would never admit to it.

But this approach, Apatow argues, also stems from something deeper. Apatow quotes Macdonald in an early scene about his addiction to sports gambling, particularly the invigorating moment between placing a bet and seeing its result. In voiceover, Macdonald reads from his own novel, Based On A True Story: Not A Memoir: “It is when the dice are in the air, and as long as they are there, time stops. As long as the red dice are in the air, the gambler has hope. And hope is a wonderful thing to be addicted to.” This indirectly explains why Macdonald couldn’t help making an O.J. Simpson joke in 1998 when he was invited to host the ESPY Awards.

Macdonald couldn’t have known the response he’d get from Heisman-winning football player Charles Woodson when he joked that Woodson’s prize is something that “they can never take away from you. Unless you kill your wife and a waiter, in which case…” Apatow includes a reaction shot of a mortified Woodson, which remains funny for the same reason that, in a successive montage, O’Brien’s helpless laughter at Macdonald’s button-pushing jokes is a key part of Macdonald’s bits. Macdonald turned his anxious listeners into essential proofs of his patience-testing humor.

In the wake of his firing, Macdonald enjoyed moments of mainstream resurgence, including star vehicles like cult comedy Dirty Work and his short-lived sitcom The Norm Show, but all the bridge-burning led Macdonald to what he jokingly referred to as a major demotion in stature: hosting a podcast. But Macdonald also joked about this indignity, like with a running bit about losing the sponsorship of the ManGrate brand of cast-iron grills, whose products Macdonald couldn’t stop himself from laughing at.

Macdonald continued to thrive even with a notably reduced audience, and Apatow exhibits a keen understanding as to why. He points out how Macdonald treated anyone who either interviewed or was interviewed by him like a comic foil. That was always a calculated gamble, but it often paid off in the unfiltered responses he got from seasoned talk show hosts, who he treated like straight men in an unrehearsed comedy duo. Macdonald seemed most at ease on talk shows because his ingratiating and knowing hosts often gave him license to play the kind of pseudo-naïve troublemaker that his fans came to idolize.

Unfortunately, it became harder to appreciate Macdonald’s bulldozer fearlessness when he committed the same blithe sin of favoritism that Ohlmeyer did when he fired Macdonald. It’s one thing to condemn Ohlmeyer for protecting his buddy Simpson and another to insist that “we should be more forgiving” about Macdonald’s pals Roseanne Barr and Louis C.K. To his credit, Apatow doesn’t ignore that wrongheaded episode, nor Macdonald’s series of self-mortifying, backpedaling apologies, many of which only make him look more lost and confounded by public backlash. It’s all the more mortifying to see the comic in this state after he spent so much time singling out Ohlmeyer for defending his own infamous friend.

In this sense, Norm both does and doesn’t satisfy as an apology for Macdonald. Apatow seems to agree with Macdonald’s pleas for tolerance when he shows Macdonald asking Barr about her mental health struggles. And Apatow also predictably takes more time to highlight what Ohlmeyer did in service of Simpson, like how Ohlmeyer continued to punish Macdonald even after his firing by refusing to pay for newspaper ads to promote Dirty Work. Macdonald isn’t held to such high standards; for example, there’s nothing in Norm about Macdonald’s other MeToo apologia, like his comments about Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick.

On the other hand, Norm convincingly presents Macdonald as a comedian whose biggest misstep was not caring enough about who he made fun of, or how he ingratiated himself to his audience. Some mistakenly assumed that Macdonald’s “Weekend Update” persona was his style, based on his frequently critical tone and propensity for flirting with provocative subjects. But as Apatow points out, Macdonald didn’t want to be known for being mean. He says as much in an excerpted conversation with O’Brien, revealing that he regrets making fun of the 1997 Carrot Top vehicle Chairman Of The Board: “I never got into comedy to hurt anyone’s feelings.”

In this case—when Macdonald breaks Carrot Top’s co-star Courtney Thorne-Smith while on the same episode of O’Brien’s show—the subject of Macdonald’s jokes at least gets to agree that the context of Macdonald’s humor does make a difference. These jokes were obviously his characteristic way of turning Thorne-Smith into his unwitting, but clearly game comedy partner. Apatow also shows Carrot Top saying, on a podcast interview, that he didn’t take it personally since “we’re comics” and also “it was a fucking joke, and it was funny.” Norm effectively argues that, in order to fully appreciate or simply understand Macdonald’s sensibility, you have to appreciate that even his most pointed and critical jokes were all in good fun.

Maybe that’s why Macdonald preferred to be known as a stand-up than for his time on SNL, since that became the ultimate proof that he could still bust up anybody, in any room. After all, when you’re a stand-up, the response you get is immediate, so when the response is good and you’re on a roll, you don’t have to wonder if you’re funny or not. That said, by focusing so much on how Macdonald’s style implicitly relied on his rapport with his audience, Apatow also inadvertently relates why Macdonald will likely always be most fondly remembered for what might have been if he had let up on Simpson. But then, that just wouldn’t have been a very Norm Macdonald thing to do.

Apple TV’s British import Small Prophets is already one of the best-reviewed series of the year on both sides of the pond, and one of the best examples of the powerful ways that magical realism can be used to tell compelling stories onscreen. The six-episode first season is a deeply human story of grief, loss, and searching for answers that follows a store clerk still looking for a girlfriend who’s been missing for seven years. While this might sound like the plot of any one of a dozen or so popular procedurals, Small Prophets is very determinedly not that show.

Instead, the series sees hardware clerk Michael (Pearce Quigley) turn to medieval alchemy for answers, attempting to grow the small, truth-telling spirits known as homunculi in his garden shed. A weird and wonderful tale that introduces something that feels an awful lot like magic to its otherwise fairly straightforward world, it uses the supernatural to tell a larger, human story about the dangers of a life half lived. But it’s hardly alone when it comes to using elements of the mystical or uncanny to explore familiar stories in new ways.

Apple TV is streaming new episodes of Small Prophets through November 4, but if you’re looking for more series that use elements of magical realism, we’ve put together a guide for you.

Cast: Diego Vásquez, Marco Antonio González Ospina, Marleyda Soto, Susana Morales Cañas, Édgar Vittorino, Claudio Cataño, Loren Sofía, Akima, Nicole Montenegro Sánchez, Janer Villarreal, Carla Baratta, Estefanía Piñeres, Emmanuel Restrepo, and Sebastián Osorio.

Gabriel García Márquez’s novel One Hundred Years Of Solitude is one of the foundational texts of magical realism as a literary genre, a unique blend of romance, history, war, family, superstition, and faith, told across seven generations of the Buendía clan in the fictional village of Macondo. Long considered one of the great unfilmable stories, it’s probably not surprising that Netflix’s 16-part Spanish-language adaptation isn’t always particularly faithful to its source material. (The novel contains surprisingly little dialogue, for example.) But it gets its wild, untamable spirit exactly right. Full of weird, striking, and, yes, magical imagery, it brings the idealistic rise and fall of a family, a city, and perhaps even humanity itself to vivid, haunting life. Is it a bit more challenging than the average TV show? Probably, thanks to its dense plot and sprawling cast of characters who all seem to share one of about four names. But its wild and occasionally incomprehensible journey is still one well worth taking.

Cast: Nick Stahl, Clancy Brown, Clea Duvall, Adrienne Barbeau, Tim DeKay, Michael J. Anderson, Amy Madigan, and Patrick Bauchau

A sprawling, wildly ambitious tale of good, evil, wonder, madness, and virtually everything in between, HBO’s Carnivale was like very little else on the network—or anywhere else—when it premiered in 2003. Set during the 1930s in the middle of the Dust Bowl, the series follows a traveling circus led by an unseen, godlike figure known only as Management, and mixes the gritty realities of day-to-day living with the sweeping scope of the supernatural and uncanny. Packed with occult symbolism, religious iconography, shared dreamscapes, prophecies, and miracles, it’s a show that’s beautiful to look at and which defies easy description as it wrestles with cosmic questions of destiny and fate through all too flawed and human avatars. Sadly canceled after just two seasons, the show ends on a massive cliffhanger. Yet, it’s still absolutely worth the watch.

Wonderfalls

Cast: Caroline Dhavernas, Lee Pace, Katie Finneran, Tyron Leitso, William Sadler, Diana Scarwid, and Tracie Thoms

Number of seasons: One

Many series have unceremoniously ended before they could find their audience, but the sudden and abrupt conclusion of Bryan Fuller’s Wonderfalls was particularly egregious. Canceled after just four episodes aired, the aggressively whimsical comedy-drama is one of the best shows that far too many people have never even heard of, let alone seen. Wonderfalls follows the story of Jayne, a cynical, twenty-something slacker working at a gift shop in Niagara Falls whose life is turned upside down when various inanimate objects start talking to her. (Well, provided they have a mouth, of course.) From a wax lion and a brass monkey to a cow-shaped creamer and a fish mounted on a restaurant wall, they all start telling her to do things and won’t leave her alone until she follows their instructions. But, perhaps surprisingly, this isn’t a story of madness, and all their instructions are meant to help those in need. It is through their well-meaning bullying that Jayne slowly begins to reintegrate herself into her larger community.

The House Of The Spirits

Cast: Alfonso Herrera, Dolores Fonzi, Nicole Wallace, Rochi Hernández, Sara Becker, Fernanda Castillo, Juan Pablo Raba, Aline Küppenheim, Eduard Fernández, Maribel Verdú,  Antonia Zegers, Nicolás Contreras, and Néstor Cantillana

Number of seasons: One

Prime Video’s take on The House Of The Spirits—another foundational text of magical realism that’s often mentioned alongside Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years Of Solitude as the best the genre has to offer—isn’t the first adaptation of Isabel Allende’s classic. But it’s the far superior one. The 1993 film’s star-studded group of weirdly miscast Anglo actors and truncated runtime didn’t do the novel’s complex, nuanced story any favors. But Prime Video’s eight-part Spanish version finally gives it the prestige treatment it deserves.

Featuring lush visuals of sweeping landscapes and colorfully designed interiors, The House Of The Spirits follows multiple generations of the Trueba family in an unnamed Latin American country that bears multiple unsubtle parallels to early 20th-century Chile and incorporates allegorized elements from Allende’s own life. A cross-generational saga that features clairvoyance, telekinesis, ghosts, and precognition alongside everyday themes of justice, fate, and betrayal, it deftly blends the mystical with the mundane (and occasionally terrifying) world of human politics and ambition. Though it makes some fairly major changes to its source material (one member of the Trueba clan is excised from this adaptation entirely!), it’s still thematically on point.

The Underground Railroad

Cast: Thuso Mbedu, Chase W. Dillon, Joel Edgerton, Fred Hechinger,  Peter Mullan, Mychal-Bella Bowman, Sheila Atim, Aaron Pierre, William Jackson Harper

Number of seasons: One

Barry Jenkins’ limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2016 novel is unlike any Civil War series you’ve ever seen before. Reimagining the 19th-century covert network of secret routes and safehouses that helped enslaved Black people escape north as a literal railroad powered by subterranean steam engines, the result is something that’s both unbelievably magical and uncomfortably hyperrealistic. The series follows an orphaned slave named Cora (Mbedu) who flees an antebellum Georgia plantation only to find a series of increasingly dark horrors on the road to her eventual freedom. Her journey through a variety of distinctly awful slave states—South Carolina, for example, secretly practices eugenics, while North Carolina essentially attempts to exterminate every Black person in its borders—is harrowing stuff, but the story is ultimately a bittersweet study in resilience that refuses to let us look away from the trauma of our past. (Maybe don’t binge this one though.)

Pushing Daisies

Cast: Lee Pace, Anna Friel, Chi McBride, Kristin Chenoweth, Ellen Green, Swoosie Kurtz, and Jim Dale

Number of seasons: Two

Bryan Fuller’s work tends to be flavored with various degrees of magical realism (see also: Wonderfalls, above), but his whimsical, fairy-tale-tinged series Pushing Daisies is probably the best example of this trend in his work. It follows the story of a pie maker (Pace) with the ability to bring dead things back to life with a single touch, who uses his powers to help solve crimes by simply asking murder victims who killed them. (This ability comes with some stringent rules, most notably that a second touch kills the resurrected again, but leaving a reanimated person alive for longer than a minute causes someone nearby to die. A life for a life, after all.)

The show’s quirky small-town aesthetic, vibrant color palette, and fairytale-style narrator are a few of the series’ unique elements that are seamlessly woven into the fabric of its larger universe, and its seemingly macabre framing hides a surprisingly warm and rich celebration of life.

Dollface

Cast: Kat Dennings, Brenda Song, Shay Mitchell, and Esther Povitsky

Number of seasons: Two

A more lighthearted pick than some of the other entries on this list, Dollface stars Kat Dennings as Jules, a thirtysomething trying to get over a bad breakup only to realize how much of her life was built around her ex-boyfriend. As she relearns how to reconnect with the world—more specifically, with the female friends she’s ignored for the sake of a man—her anxiety and loneliness manifest themselves physically, in the form of dream sequences, imaginary game shows, and other visual gags, many of which often include a recurring guide with the face of a cat that essentially serves as Jules’s subconscious. (Over the course of the show’s two seasons, this avatar appears as everything from a bus driver to a therapist.) It’s a remarkably clever way to explore the complicated layers of Jules’ psyche, and the series has some smart things to say about modern dating, socializing, and female friendship.

Schmigadoon!

Cast: Cecily Strong, Keegan-Michael Key, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Jane Krakowski, Aaron Tveit, Tituss Burgess, Fred Armisen, Ann Harada, Patrick Page, and Martin Short

Number of seasons: Two, plus a Broadway musical

In the strictest sense, Apple TV’s Schmigadoon! is more meta fantasy than magical realism, if we want to be technical about it. But if you enjoy stories that freely mix the mundane and the fantastic to a delightfully compelling end, there’s hardly a more entertaining example than this quirky relationship drama that sees a couple work out their problems through copious application of spontaneous song. A love letter to musical theater, its storied history, and the various Broadway alums who pop up throughout its two seasons, Schmigadoon! creates a bright, colorful world built on the familiar framework established by Brigadoon and Chicago, which it then uses to interrogate familiar, modern-day problems. Self-aware enough to acknowledge its own artifice and yet fully committed to taking its premise seriously, it’s a series that probably shouldn’t work at all, but does.

“La Bola Negra,” a sprawling historical epic that is viewed as a major Oscar contender, opened in limited release this weekend. The film‘s grosses were strong, with “La Bola Negra” earning $277,500 from just four venues in New York and Los Angeles, for a per-screen average of $69,375. It’s the second-highest per-screen average for a Non-English language film of all time. But more importantly the film also makes history, becoming the first Netflix release to ever publicly disclose box office grosses.

That marks a shift in strategy for the streamer, which has released films in theaters exclusively for several weeks to qualify for Oscars, but has been dodgy about the money they’re actually making. It briefly pulled back the curtain on the results for “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” but never officially. But it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day for Netflix, which will start to report box office results like the rest of its studio and streaming brethren.

So get ready for headlines about how David Fincher’s “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,’ Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,” Taika Waititi’s animated feature “Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory,” Peter Berg’s “The Mosquito Bowl,” and Danny Boyle’s “Ink” fare when they open in theaters. All will have theatrical windows of roughly a month or more, which will give them access to more screens. But will Netflix enjoy the scrutiny? Apple sure seemed to hate it, discovering it was great to report box office when you had the goods (“F1”) and not so hot when you did not (“Fly Me to the Moon,” “Argylle”).

But Netflix has bigger problems at the moment. Its stock is in a rut and it has just enacted a punishing wave of layoffs, pink-slipping 1,000 employees and jettisoning Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria in favor of Fox and Disney vet Peter Rice. Will an embrace of traditional theatrical releases provide Netflix with an invaluable new source of revenue or will Wall Street treat box office grosses as another metric to pummel Ted Sarandos with when it finds them lacking?

So far, Netflix seems happy with the results. The streamer noted that “La Bola Negra’s” look at gay history appealed to younger audiences, the same ones driving the box office rebound. To that end, 51% of its opening weekend crowd was under the age of 35, with ticket buyers between 25 to 34 making up the largest age group at 39%.

“La Bola Negra,” which Netflix picked up at Cannes for around $5 million, may be important in another key way. Awards voters seem to be embracing it and there’s a chance that it could overcome “The Odyssey” to land Netflix the Best Picture Oscar it has long coveted. That kind of validation would be worth a lot more than whatever the historical epic earns at the box office.

Singer’s four-song set at star-studded event also featured “Blank Space,” “Love Story,” and “I Knew It, I Knew You”

Taylor Swift performed “The Fate of Ophelia” live for the first time Saturday at the star-studded Academy Museum Gala.

Conan O’Brien introduced Swift prior to her four-song set, calling her “John, Paul, George, and Ringo all in one” before she and her band launched in “Blank Space.” Following that, Swift told the audience that they were about to witness the debut performance of a Life of a Showgirl track.

“This song, which we are playing for the very first time for you beautiful people, this is called ‘The Fate of Ophelia,’” Swift told the crowd.

Swift then performed her Toy Story 5 contribution “I Knew It, I Knew You” before ending her gala performance with “Love Story.”

“Taylor is an extraordinary talent whose work resonates around the world,” Academy Museum Director Amy Homma said in a statement when Swift’s gala performance was announced earlier this month. “We are thrilled to welcome her to this year’s gala and look forward to her performance to close a wonderful evening of honoring three extraordinary filmmakers and supporting the Academy Museum’s mission to celebrate and preserve cinema.”

Trending Stories

Swift is an avowed film fan and is reportedly working on feature-length directorial debut. (The movie was announced in 2022, but still no word yet on when it might go into production or see release.) But her decision to play the Academy Museum’s annual gala also comes at an important moment: Right before the start of Oscars voting season.

Since the end of the Eras Tour in December 2024, Swift has only performed live a handful of times, usually in similarly celebrity-filled settings: Prior to her Academy Museum performance, Swift played at both Grammys- and Emmys-related events back in August. Before that, she debuted “I Knew It, I Knew You” at the Toy Story 5 premiere in Los Angeles.

NEWPORT BEACH FILM FESTIVAL 2026 REVIEW! It’s 2010, and Iran’s government does something almost too strange to believe: it bans the mullet. Yes, that mullet. Shervin (Bobby Naderi) is an ordinary guy who happens to love his hair, and overnight, his hair makes him a criminal. He’s not a rebel or an activist. He’s just a man who likes his hair in a certain style.

As the crackdown spreads, Shervin becomes a marked man. Across town, Siavash (Ali Saam) and his enforcers are roaming the streets, rounding up men, and chopping off their mullets on the spot in a public spectacle… the horror.

Roya (Shabnam Tolouei) stands in a dim room wearing a black headscarf in The Last Mullet.

“It’s 2010, and Iran’s government does something almost too strange to believe: it bans the mullet.”

When Shervin is spotted by the hair patrol, he bobs and weaves through the city streets—but it isn’t long before there’s banging at the door, and his poor mother is caught between a rock and a hard place.

Believe it or not, The Last Mullet is based on real events: in 2010, the Iranian regime banned so-called “Western hairstyles,” including mullets, mohawks, and ponytails. Filmmaker Hoj Jomehri, whose family fled Iran in the 1980s, found the funny in the absurdity and committed it to film.

The Last Mullet plays out as a satire with an Indiana Jones–style street chase. As Shervin, Bobby Naderi does what he needs to do to sell this absurd story, and he nails it. The ending between the mother and son is quite poignant too. I love a short film that uses humor in a serious way to make its point.

The Last Mullet screened at the 2026 Newport Beach Film Festival.

By Helen Liang Special to Global News Posted October

Netflix‘s Spanish drama La Bola Negra debuted to $277.5k on four screens – these numbers coming directly from the giant streamer Sunday in its first ever official box office grosses.

The TIFF audience award-winner saw $108.3k Friday and $84.6k on Saturday leading into a strong three-day per screen average of $69.4k for the company’s inaugural report.

The film, based on an unfinished play of the same name by Federico García Lorca, launched at the Paris Theater and Angelika in New York, and AMC Century City and Burbank in LA. Netflix is giving the festival favorite a 45-day theatrical window in a new era of box office reporting overseen by global theatrical distribution head Spencer Klein. It will expand in NY/LA and add major markets over the next few weeks ahead of a wider break 11/6.

House records, as per Netflix, reflect the highest opening gross for a non-English language film at the Angelika, The Paris and AMC Century City (excluding dubbed anime) and, more broadly, the second-highest per-screen average for a non-English language film of all time. And the highest per-screen average ever for a Spanish film.

Buzz for the film began at its Cannes world premiere where helmers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi shared Best Director for the R-rated, era-spanning story that went on to beguile the festival circuit. Spain’s Oscar entry for Best International Feature follows the interconnected lives of three gay men.

Netflix gave the film a full theatrical marketing campaign including out-of-home, social, standees, trailers and community screenings, along with bespoke elements. A poetry salon hosted by John Cameron Mitchell and modeled on Lorca’s secret 1930s intellectual gatherings, brought filmmakers and cast together to honor Lorca’s lasting influence on queer art and culture ahead of the NYC premiere last Thursday at NewFest. Marketing will be key for and upcoming titles as the company seeks to draw moviegoers into seats.

The streamer release Guitarricadelafuente’s single from the film, ‘La Nieve,’ (The Snow) on Sept. 18. The musician made his acting debut in the film, which also stars Milo Quifes and Carlos González., with Glenn Close and Penélope Cruz.

Reactions from in-theater audience exit surveys were strong with 96% rating La Bola Negra Excellent or Very Good (80% Excellent), and 87% giving it a Definite Recommend. The film skewed male (66%) and young, with 51% under 35 and 25 to 34 year-olds the largest age group at 39%.

It’s Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh with critics at 87%.

Upcoming Netflix releases set for wider theatrical release and significant windows include The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth by David Fincher; Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew; animated feature Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory: by Taika Waititi; The Mosquito Bowl by Peter Berg and Danny Boyle’s Ink.

The Chargers vs Chiefs has the potential to deliver the shock of Week 6, with Los Angeles at 0-5 in the midst of the single worst run of Jim Harbaugh’s career, and Kansas City undefeated at 4-0 and coming off a bye. It’s the Bolts, however, who’ve had the better of this all-AFC West rivalry of late. They did the double over KC last season.

A repeat at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday would be nothing short of a seismic upset, with the Chargers seemingly incapable of getting over the line, even when they were 17-10 up in the fourth quarter of their clash with Broncos last week and on a fourth-and-1 at their own 41-yard line.

If you’re settling in for some streaming this week, there’s a decent chance you’re looking for something spooky as October breezes by (or swelters on, depending on where you live) toward Halloween. Fortunately, this week’s new Hulu releases bring a pair of 2025 horror debuts, so you’re covered on that front. And if you’re not a horror person at all, you can look ahead and start getting ready for one of the year’s biggest releases with the entire “Hunger Games” franchise now available to watch on Hulu.

The “Hunger Games” Franchise

If you want to get caught up before “Sunrise on the Reaping” hits theaters, now’s the time, and the good news for Hulu subscribers is that all five “Hunger Games” movies arrived on the platform on Oct. 14. From the original 2012 film to the 2023 Snow-centric prequel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the “Hunger Games” franchise has remained consistently great — ok, except for 2014’s “Mockingjay – Part 1,” a casualty of the unfortunate decision to split the final book into two parts when the first half of that book is famously a bleak slog.

That aside, these films are a fantastic adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ generational YA series, each installment finding a new path to examine warfare and propaganda while delivering unforgettable characters and one knockout ensemble cast after the next. “Sunrise” hits theaters on Nov. 17, so start your re-watch (or re-read if you’re going all in) now.

Companion

Surprising though it may be, given the current technological revolutions reshaping society, there aren’t that many robot horror movies — and even fewer that are actually good. “Companion,” however, delivers, and it does so with a classic sci-fi approach: making humanity the horror, not their creation.

“Yellowjackets” breakout Sophie Thatcher leads alongside “The Boys” star Jack Quaid as a couple whose remote weekend getaway goes violently wrong when an attack provokes one of the guests to realize they’re an android built to be a romantic companion. Which is definitely not what they want to be, nor what they intend to remain, no matter what it takes to get their freedom. None of the twists and turns here are too surprising, especially if you ever saw a trailer for it, but boy does it deliver an entertaining action-horror romp.

Wolf Man
Universal

Wolf Man

A bit more on the dreary side of movie monsters, we’ve got “Wolf Man.” The 2025 film isn’t on the level of director Leigh Whannell’s best and never reaches the heights of his “The Invisible Man” reimagining, but he’s a savvy horror filmmaker, which means there are certainly moments werewolf enthusiasts will appreciate.

“East of Eden’s” Christopher Abbott stars alongside “Ozark” Emmy winner Julia Garner as two parents trying to protect their family from a supernatural threat without becoming the monster they fear. It’s not your typical werewolf movie, slower and more pensive than you might be expecting, and unfortunately, those character beats are among its weaker elements, but it brings the brutality when it comes to the body horror of transformation.

“You Can See Everything” accomplished a true box office feat, becoming the rare must-see documentary on the big screen.

Director Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s much-hyped look at Elizabeth Holmes has generated a massive $15 million from just 855 theaters. Those ticket sales were enough for second place behind another newcomer, Paramount’s video game adaptation “Street Fighter,” which opened to $30 million from 3,575 venues. Heading into the weekend, “You Can See Everything” was aiming for $7 million to $8 million, which would have been remarkable for a documentary, especially one that doesn’t involve music or capture a wildly popular concert. Not to mention, this one runs at nearly three hours and wasn’t on anyone’s radar until two months ago.

After a surprise world premiere at Telluride Film Festival, “You Can See Everything” became a word-of-mouth sensation, bolstered by some of the best reviews of the year. A24, which produced the movie in secret over three years for roughly $7 million, reported more than 2,000 sold-out screenings as audiences rushed to theaters to avoid spoilers on the stranger-than-fiction story about the Theranos founder before she began an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors. Around 70% of opening weekend crowds were under 35 years old, and they liked what they saw onscreen. According to exit polls, 90% of ticket buyers would “definitely recommend” the film and 80% said it was “even better than expected.” Those reactions signal a long theatrical life for the movie, which is expanding nationwide in the weeks to come.

“This is a giant weekend for the genre,” says analyst David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. “Documentaries rarely receive a wide release — there’s only one every other year — and they average $3 million over their first three days.”

This year has been an exception with two major docs, the other being Amazon MGM’s “Melania,” a $40-million-budgeted glimpse at first lady Melania Trump. That film opened to $7.1 million from 1,778 theaters — at the time registering as the biggest opening for a non-music or concert doc in over a decade — and ended its run with $16.3 million. (“You Can See Everything” carries a budget in the single digits and will be much more profitable than “Melania.)

Among its opening weekend bona fides, “You Can See Everything” secured the largest debut for any film playing on under 1,000 screens since 2006’s “Borat,” which ignited to $26 million from 837 theaters (not adjusted for inflation). And it’s the biggest opening for a documentary in over 20 years, since 2004’s seminal “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which premiered to $24 million from 868 theaters (not adjusted for inflation). Ticket sales for “You Can See Everything” are notable, not just for a documentary, but any arthouse release these days. By comparison, A24’s box office hit “The Drama,” anchored by two of Hollywood’s biggest stars in Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, opened earlier this year to $14.3 million from 3,087 theaters.

“Street Fighter” collected another $20.1 million overseas for a decent global start of $51.1 million. Critics and audiences were lukewarm on the video game reboot, which landed a “B-” grade on CinemaScore exit polls and a 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Kitao Sakurai and starring Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji, “Street Fighter” follows two estranged fighters who are recruited to enter a tournament that forces them to face off against each other.

Legendary and video game developer Capcom co-financed “Street Fighter” for $82 million, with Paramount only on the hook for distribution. The long-gestating film was originally set at Sony as part of Legendary’s pact with the studio and moved to Paramount once the initial deal expired. It’s the third movie based on the Capcom video game series following 1994’s box office winner “Street Fighter,” starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and 2009’s misfire “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.”

“Whalefall” and “Sense and Sensibility,” two other newcomers, launched in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Disney and 20th Century’s “Whalefall,” a survival thriller starring Austin Abrams as a scuba diver who is swallowed by a sperm whale, missed expectations with $8 million from 3,065 locations. The movie also floundered at the international box office with $9.5 million from 51 territories for a global total of $17.5 million. Reception were mixed, with audiences bestowing a “B” grade on CinemaScore and critics’ reviews averaging a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. “Whalefall” cost $60 million and requires substantial staying power, since theater owners keep about half of ticket sales.

“Sense and Sensibility,” the latest remake of Jane Austen’s classic, opened to $7.2 million from 2,545 screens. The well-reviewed movie has earned $11 million internationally, bringing its worldwide tally to $18.5 million. Led by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles, the Focus Features film carries a $25 million budget and doesn’t have as high a hurdle to get out of the red.

Neither were able to outperform Universal’s horror film “Other Mommy,” which claimed the No. 3 spot with $8.3 million in its second weekend of release. Despite a painful 70% decline from its debut, “Other Mommy” is already a hit with $44.8 million domestically and $78.7 million globally against a modest $18 million budget.

Among specialty releases, Netflix’s generation-spanning drama “La Bola Negra” collected $277,500 from four theaters in Los Angeles and New York — averaging $69,375 per location. Those returns stand as the second-highest screen average ever for a non-English language film behind 2019’s “Parasite,” which captured $393,216 from three theaters — averaging $131,072 per location. For a more recent comparison, Neon’s multilingual legal thriller “Fjord” debuted last weekend to $124,000 from four theaters — translating to $31,000 per location.

This weekend is notable because it’s the first time Netflix has ever reported box office grosses. The streamer plans to keep “La Bola Negra” in theaters for 45 days, a traditional window in post-pandemic times, before the film’s Netflix release on Dec. 2. Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis, “La Bola Negra” was embraced at Cannes Film Festival with a 16-minute standing ovation and won Toronto Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award, which has become an Oscar precursor.

News movies bollywood Tiger Shroff Shot At In Mumbai’s Juhu, 3 Bike-Borne Suspects On The Run

Last Updated:

Actor Tiger Shroff was safe and had not sustained any gunshot injuries, police said.

Tiger Shroff’s driver and an autorickshaw driver were reportedly injured in the incident.

Tiger Shroff’s driver and an autorickshaw driver were reportedly injured in the incident.

Actor Tiger Shroff was allegedly targeted in a firing incident in Mumbai’s Juhu after three unidentified men arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at Pushpa Park.

While initial reports suggested that Shroff and two others had been injured, Mumbai Police later clarified that the actor was safe and had not sustained any gunshot injuries. Shroff’s driver and an autorickshaw driver were reportedly injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, a social media post purportedly by gangster Anil Pandit has surfaced, allegedly claiming responsibility for the firing on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke with Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharati to enquire about the firing incident and directed him to launch an investigation and take strict action against those responsible. As many as 15 teams have been formed to nab the accused.

Oppn Slams Fadnavis Govt Over Law And Order

The incident also triggered a political row, with Congress leader Sachin Sawant questioning the state of law and order in Mumbai and accusing the Maharashtra government of failing to curb criminal activity.

Reacting to the incident, Sawant wrote on X, “The news of a shooting at actor Tiger Shroff’s car is utterly shocking. What’s exactly going on in Mumbai? The murder of Baba Siddique, a shooting at Salman Khan’s house, threats to numerous actors and producers… Law and order in Mumbai has gone completely haywire.”

He further alleged that the city was witnessing a breakdown of law and order, saying, “It’s not just a lack of law and order; it’s as if utter chaos has taken hold. The Chief Minister has proven to be a total failure!”

Comparing the situation in Maharashtra with Bihar, Sawant added, “We’d reached the point of saying ‘Maharashtra has become Bihar’; but now, we’ve come to the stage where we’re saying ‘even Bihar is better.’ Strongest condemnation of the government that’s pushing Mumbai into the clutches of criminals!”

Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad said the incident once again raises serious questions about the deteriorating law and order situation in Mumbai.

“Gunfire outside Salman Khan’s residence, the tragic killing of Baba Siddique, and shots fired outside Rohit Shetty’s home… If even prominent politicians and actors are not safe, what hope is there for the common man?” she said.

Gaikwad also argued that Maharashtra needs a dedicated Home Minister, saying Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is burdened with too many portfolios and an excessive workload.

“Maharashtra needs a dedicated, independent Home Minister—someone truly capable and formidable. I reiterate: grant the police their independence, allow them to perform their duties, and put an end to the political pressure exerted on them by the Home Department,” she added.

Maurisio “Mauri” Tapia, the frontman of the popular SoCal indie rock act Los Retros, has been charged with four felony counts of unlawful acts with a child under the age of 10.

Tapia, a 26-year-old Moorpark resident was arrested on Oct. 8 and booked with bail set at $3 million. He was charged in Ventura County Superior Court on Monday, according to court records, and did not enter a plea.

The charges come with additional special allegations, around the victim’s vulnerability and that Tapia abused a trustworthy position. His next court date is Thursday.

Los Retros became an influential act in a wave of Latino bands drawing from vintage Mexican balladeers, American oldies and modern indie rock. Tapia played the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this year, and singles like “Someone to Spend Time With” and “Amtrak” have millions of streams and monthly listeners.

The project was a prominent act on Stones Throw Records, which had initially booked Los Retros to co-headline its 30th anniversary festival.

In a statement posted to social media, Stones Throw said that “Yesterday we learned of extremely serious and disturbing allegations against Mauri Tapia, professionally known as Los Retros. We had previously announced the cancellation of his scheduled performance at Stones Throw 30 before we were aware of these circumstances. In light of this information, we are taking steps to disassociate ourselves from Tapia and his work. We take these allegations extremely seriously and will continue to assess the situation as more information becomes available.”

Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, is gradually being retconned by Marvel Studios after its failure to replicate the first film’s box office success. The studio will take its first major step in that direction with Avengers: Doomsday, the December 18 blockbuster that pits the MCU’s biggest heroes against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Among the hero factions are the Fox universe’s X-Men, including Kelsey Grammer’s Hank McCoy. Beast, it turns out, will play an integral role in Marvel’s decision to distance itself from The Marvels.

Marvel Studios has just given fans their clearest look yet at Beast in Avengers: Doomsday, and the blue-furred mutant looks nothing like the version from The Marvels‘ post-credits scene. A new Hot Toys collectible figure shows Grammer’s character bare-chested, wearing dark blue pants with yellow trim and a yellow belt with the X-Men logo on the buckle.

This take on Beast looks far more feral and aggressive than the gentle, lab-coated version who appeared in Brie Larson’s sequel. That movie ended with Monica Rambeau sacrificing herself to seal a tear in space-time after she, Carol Danvers, and Kamala Khan defeated the villainous Dar-Benn. The stinger revealed that her sacrifice had transported her to an alternate universe, one where her mother, Maria Rambeau, was alive and operating as a hero named Binary in a red and white costume.

Monica woke in a hospital bed as Grammer’s Beast appeared at her bedside in a lab coat and glasses. The scene electrified fans, since it tied the Fox X-Men to MCU continuity and even featured music cues from X2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Naturally, it was assumed to be a direct pipeline into Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel, it seems, has different plans.

The studio has been hinting at the Beast redesign for a while, well before the Hot Toys figure. The first promotional mural, designed by former Marvel Studios director of visual development Andy Park, showed that Beast would go completely bare-chested for the first time in his live-action history. A Hasbro Marvel Legends figure later gave fans an even better look at the redesign.

It is entirely possible that the Beast spotlighted in Doomsday‘s marketing hails from a different universe than the one in The Marvels. The re-release of Avengers: Endgame, titled Avengers: Endgame Encore, included a TVA post-credits scene showing the Fox X-Men universe, designated Earth-10005, on the brink of an incursion with the mysterious Earth-1127. In that scene, Mobius, Ouroboros, and Casey watch the two worlds collide, with Ouroboros saying, “The multiverse is collapsing.” The Russo Brothers have called it “the most profound thing that’s ever happened to the MCU.”

If Doomsday‘s Beast comes from a world in constant war, fighting for survival, a more aggressive and feral design makes sense. The Beast from The Marvels, by contrast, had a much calmer demeanor, suggesting he belongs to a separate universe altogether. This signals Marvel’s first step in distancing itself from that movie, which was poorly received by general audiences.

Teyonah Parris, Brie Larson, and Iman Vellani, the three leads of The Marvels, have all been left out of Avengers: Doomsday, which only reinforces the sense that Marvel is quietly retconning that post-credits scene. Resolving it properly would require Parris to appear in Doomsday in some capacity, but it has become increasingly obvious that she does not factor into the film at all. Using a different Beast diminishes the significance of The Marvels‘ post-credits scene.

The Marvels’ Historic Box Office Flop Changed the MCU’s Plans

Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel was a resounding success, pulling in over $1.1 billion during its 2019 theatrical run. Marvel Studios decided to give the character a sequel with a more ambitious storyline. Five years later, The Marvels arrived with Larson back as the lead, surrounded by exciting new heroes. Marvel was confident in the movie, given how the first performed, and it staked its biggest X-Men reveal to date on the post-credits scene, believing fans would flock to theaters for the follow-up.

The film instead became a historic flop, opening domestically to just $46.1 million, the worst debut in MCU history. And the worst was yet to come. In its second weekend, ticket sales cratered by 78%, the biggest second-weekend drop the franchise had ever seen, as brutal word of mouth took its toll. The movie ended its run with $84.5 million domestically and $206 million worldwide, falling short of its reported $220 million budget and landing deep in loss territory.

It became the lowest-grossing MCU movie of all time, the first in franchise history to fall short of $100 million domestically, and Disney eventually stopped reporting its grosses altogether. The message from audiences was unmistakable.

Avengers: Doomsday is Marvel’s most ambitious project yet, and tethering a film of that scale to the franchise’s biggest-ever failure risks rubbing off on the crossover event and reminding audiences of the Multiverse Saga’s missteps. So even though The Marvels delivered one of the saga’s most important post-credits scenes, Marvel appears intent on distancing Doomsday from it as much as possible. Hence the new Beast.

Last year, Nicolas Cage was said to be in talks to star in True Detective season five. It seemed like the perfect combination of performer and IP. But while good things don’t always happen in Hollywood, Cage (basically) revealed at this month’s New York Comic Con he had officially agreed to star on the popular HBO detective series. Now we know he has. And we know who will work this season’s case with him. It’s more good Hollywood news. Antonio Banderas will partner with Cage to solve the series’ next spooky mystery.

El Deseo

True Detective has found its latest cop duo. Antonio Banderas is the latest big-time name to sign on to the show. The news (which we first heard at Deadline) also gives us some insight into what we can expect. Cage will play Henry Logan while Banderas will play Rai Garcia in a story set in Jamaica Bay, New York. That will make the Empire State the fifth different one to serve as the primary setting for the show. However, that does not mean there won’t be connections between this new detective pairing and previous installments. The show’s fifth season will come from showrunner Issa López, who also helmed the critically-acclaimed fourth season, True Detective: Night Country. That season, despite taking place in Alaska, had direct connection to the first installment which took place in Louisiana.

Production on the new installment is expected to begin next year in 2027. In addition to her showrunner responsibilities, López will also write, director, and executive produce. Cage, Banderas, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Cary Joji Fukunaga, and show creator Nic Pizzolatto will join her as executive producers.

Every season of True Detective has the legendary first year to live up to, and while it hasn’t always done that, tapping Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas as your stars will give season five a chance of doing exactly that.

Konami’s games business president has downplayed generative AI’s likely impact on the business, arguing that “people and creators” matter more to game development.

Hideki Hayakawa, the president of Konami Digital Entertainment, made the comments in the company’s new business report, which summarises its strategies across various fields of entertainment.

Notably, the digital segment (translated by Automaton) covers the Metal Gear and Silent Hill publisher’s outlook on the potential impact of generative AI on the games industry.

Hayakawa argues that although the general consensus is that generative AI will significantly lower the entry barrier to game development, he believes this won’t bring significant change to the market environment, because “entry barriers have already been lowered by the advancements of generic game engines and the spread of UGC (user generated content).”

He added: “Even if AI use does lead to improvements in production efficiency, I believe that the most important factors in producing entertaining and innovative video games are people and creators.”

The games boss went on to argue that the human dynamic between development teams is what leads to new ideas and kinds of gameplay. “That kind of chemical reaction is not something that can be easily replaced,” he said.

Conversely, Hayakawa said he views technological advancements as a significant opportunity for creating new kinds of experiences.

“Even when it comes to epoch-making technological innovations, Konami provides systematic support so that creators can get a grasp of new technologies, properly assess the risks they may bring, and safely apply them to game development.”

After a quiet period a number of years back, when it mainly focused on eFootball and retro compilations, Konami has returned to triple-A game development in a big way, with new entries and remakes in the Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and Castlevania series.

The publisher enjoyed great critical and commercial success with the Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill F, and Silent Hill: Townfall, and wants to make Silent Hill an annual franchise, according to franchise producer Motoi Okamoto, who told GamesRadar in August that, “our aim is to, hopefully, have an annual release of new games.”

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse marks the return of the vampire-slaying series and is being handled by Evil Empire (The Rogue Prince of Persia) and Motion Twin (Dead Cells).
