Security Guard Says He Gave Ex-Housekeeper 5-Figure Sum
… After Alleged Dog Attack

In many disaster movies, there is that moment when the scientist reluctantly stands before politicians and five-star generals, and gives a technical spiel about the brewing crisis. The men usually scowl and demand that he simplify his statements. Then, the expert takes a breath — but really this is for us, the audience — and explains in plain and sober terms: Cataclysm is on its way.

“Pressure,” directed by Anthony Maras, is like dragging out that kind of stakes-setting scene to a full-length film, then sapping it of its drama. That’s because in this case, the promised disaster — the assumed arrival of which any tension is predicated upon — never comes. The potential catastrophe? The possibility of intense, stormy conditions that would sabotage the Allies’ D-Day operation during World War II.

Of course, the broader stakes are real, but the premise here amounts to an overdramatized tidbit of trivia. There are many staid films that rely on the backdrop of our bloodiest war to prop up a dull story, but “Pressure” pushes the bounds, focusing on, in all that human chaos, the dueling weather reports of two meteorologists. The fate of the world rests on the outcome of D-Day, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) tells the chief meteorologist, James Stagg (Andrew Scott). And so, the general declares: “I need a forecast.”

Of the weather on the day of the invasion, that is. Drama here is found in calls to gather data on salinity levels and upper and lower air, and to send off weather balloons in the sky. There’s also the crudely contrived danger befalling Stagg’s pregnant wife (Tamsin Topolski), who’s off in a hospital that is bombed while he’s stuck in the war rooms. But the main conflict is between Stagg and his fellow meteorologist, Irving Krick (Chris Messina), each offering a different prediction of weather conditions (Stagg: stormy, Krick: sunny) and putting Eisenhower in a tight spot. Postponing the invasion would likely thwart the Allies’ surprise attack.

As the general and the meteorologists go around in circles about data and dates, it all amounts to an empty idea masquerading as a prestige war film that a sturdy cast can’t save. Fraser, though, is a glaring miscast. General Eisenhower, or any leader whose decision constitutes the tension of the entire film, requires a certain gravitas that is, for better or worse, not in Fraser’s tool kit. The actor is defined by a goofball sensitivity that can be touching when used properly; here, those qualities translate mostly to cartoonish blustering for a general with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

But Fraser’s performance partly reads as silly because the entire drama around him is. It’s strange to find yourself briefly comforted, when the invasion eventually arrives, by the spectacle of war and bloodshed, if only because an actual conflict is occurring. It’s the standard stuff of war movies, as men charge the beaches of Normandy, but at least we’ve moved on from the weather reports.

Ezek a platformok gyakran egyszerűbb felülettel, klasszikus játékválasztékkal és olyan bónuszokkal vonzzák a visszatérő játékosokat, akik a modern, csillogó felületek helyett a múlt egyszerűségét kedvelik.

Malta Gaming Authority) adhatja a szükséges engedélyt.

A “Know Your Customer” (KYC) folyamat célja, hogy megakadályozza a pénzmosást és a csalásokat.

A régi kaszinók gyakran kedveznek a bankkártyás kifizetéseknek, mivel ezek a legkevesebb adminisztratív ellenőrzést igénylik.

A régi online kaszinók gyakran hangsúlyozzák a felelős játék lehetőségét.

“Afterpiece,” a Hong Kong drama produced by Derek Yee and directed by debut filmmaker Keane T.K. Wong, will world premiere as the opening film of the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, which runs June 12-21.

The film centers on Owen, a once-celebrated stage director who has spent more than a decade in creative paralysis. When his former lover returns under the pretense of old affection and his wife edges toward betrayal, Owen resolves to write, direct, and star in a new production of his own. During an open casting call for the female lead, he grows increasingly drawn to Hannah, an untrained newcomer, and begins to lose his grip on the line separating theatre from reality.

The cast includes Stephen Fung, Chrissie Chau, Myolie Wu, and Angela Yuen. Fung portrays the film’s male protagonist – a creator pushed to the edge by desperation and obsession – while Chau and Wu play his wife and former lover respectively. Yuen, cast as the untrained newcomer who upends the protagonist’s world, provides the catalyst that drives the film toward its conclusion.

“Afterpiece” emerged from Hong Kong’s Directors’ Succession Scheme, a government-funded initiative that pairs veteran filmmakers with emerging directors to support the renewal of Hong Kong cinema across generations. Under the scheme, Yee took on a producer-mentor role, bringing decades of on-set experience to Wong, who previously contributed to productions including “I Am Somebody,” “Sword Master,” and “In Search of Lost Time.”

The 28th SIFF is guided by the China Film Administration and hosted by China Media Group alongside the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.

As Spider-Man: Brand New Day looms on the horizon, more and more merchandise has begun to flood the market before its impending July 31 release. But ever since Lego’s infamous Mandarin tank for Iron Man 3, Marvel fans have learned that not all merchandise accurately reflects their movies. Not even Spider-Man: No Way Home escaped this, showing a battle in Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum that never remotely happened.

It doesn’t mean these absent scenes or inaccurate character designs come from nowhere. Since manufacturing this merchandise takes time and has to be ready before the movie is released, companies often base their designs and ideas on early concept art. For an already verifiable example from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the toy design of Scorpion’s suit and tail is drastically different from the ones seen in the trailers.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

But recently, a new action figure listed on Amazon has some fans buzzing about the possibility of Spider-Man gaining new abilities through his organic webbing, with the toy showing the superhero wearing a giant web punching glove. More specifically, it reminded comic book fans of Spider-Man’s most underrated and forgotten ability: web constructs.

Spider-Man using web constructs in the early comics in a variety of ways.
Amazing Spider-Man Annual (1964) #1

In early comics, Spider-Man could use his webbing in all sorts of ways. Not only could he create solid objects like shields or clubs, but he could even form a parachute from the versatile fluid. However, as the book became more grounded, Spider-Man used his webbing like this less and less, sticking to webslinging or creating spider-webs as nets.

As for its potential appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it’d make sense with the emergence of Peter Parker’s new organic webbing, which appears to have enhanced his powers. Fans even saw Spider-Man waking up from a cocoon of webbing in the first trailer, so forming a fist made of webbing isn’t totally out of the realm of possibility.

Why Merch Still Doesn’t Reflect Reality

One has to keep in mind again that merchandise, especially based on upcoming Marvel movies, isn’t always reflective of the final product. Given past merchandise from the previous movies, the same is likely true of this latest Brand New Day toy.

Action figures from Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Spider-Man: Far From Home

Looking back at Spider-Man: Far From Home merchandise, there was one toy almost identical to this Brand New Day action figure with Spider-Man using his webbing to form a similar giant fist. Not to mention another figure with Peter armed with a shield made of webs, just like the Silver Age comics. Sadly, neither appeared in Far From Home, and it’s looking the same for Brand New Day.

It’s possible that, in pre-production, Marvel Studios attempted to integrate this ability into the movies countless times with no success, only to have them cut before production. It could also be laziness on the toymaker’s part, reusing ideas from past figures to save on cost and production. Whatever the reason, the prospects of Brand New Day adapting this power aren’t good.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

However, one detail might suggest otherwise: Peter’s new backpack. While this Brand New Day toy sports a fist made of webs, it also gives Spider-Man a backpack made of them, making it more of an oddly specific accessory. One that he’s never had in any previous toy for these movies, but something Peter has commonly used in even the later comics.

If Peter’s new organic webbing is a one-time thing, Brand New Day could be the last real chance for Marvel Studios to go all out in giving Peter Parker boundless ways to use his webs like the classic comics.

Have you ever wondered what middle age was like? Maybe you’re deep in the throes of it already, watching The Four Seasons and laughing heartily while nodding your head at the relatable moments. The Tina Fey-created series is back for its second season, and it’s just as endearing as ever. Though the friend group is reeling from the sudden death of their longtime friend Nick (Steve Carell), the seasons continue to turn, and life goes on.

In Season 1, the dynamic shifted as Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver) vacationed with her friends and soon-to-be ex-husband, along with his new and much younger girlfriend. In Season 2, it’s arguably even weirder with Nick gone and Ginny (Erika Henningsen) still hovering, first pregnant, then with a child. It’s an awkward situation to navigate, so can you blame Anne for being unbearable at times?

While Anne was dealing with the breakdown of her marriage, Jack (Will Forte) and Kate (Fey) were trying to keep their spark going as empty nesters, and Danny (Colman Domingo) and Claude (Marco Calvani) were navigating the complicated nature of an open marriage. What became apparent with every couple is that it’s possible to feel lonely even when you’re not technically alone.

Like the first season and the 1981 movie of the same name on which the show is based, the episodes in Season 2 take us through four vacations, two episodes per vacation, each during a specific season. From reinvention to major life decisions, midlife crises, and changing relationships, you feel like you’re part of this group of 50-something friends by the end, or at least you wish you were.

This season is heartwarming, funny, and entertaining throughout. It’s about journeys of personal discovery, and the hilarious blunders that happen during their time away, trying to break up the monotony of daily life. What I especially love about the show and the group of friends is that every moment feels like one that will come up 20 years from now, while these characters sit in a retirement home, regaling tales that begin with, “Remember that time when… [insert crazy vacation event here].”

Jack showing friends a carving knife in a box as Kate looks on in The Four Seasons. Netflix

The long-time friend group is starting from scratch, in a way; Nick’s journey to self-discovery is no longer at the center of the plot now that he’s gone. But the tone, like Season 1, continues to be both humorous and enlightening, sharp and witty, while also sad and hopeful. Each member of the group grows and shifts, all fueled in some way by their grief as well as reflections on their lives, questions about their futures, and realization of their own mortality. That’s especially complicated for Anne, who is navigating starting over after closing in on a comfortably stagnant chapter of her life.

The ensemble cast is, once again, perfect together, and the wholesome friendship between Kate and Danny is a standout. Jack, a perfect role for Forte, is the goofy glue and moral center, his sweetness so rooted in honesty that his childlike behavior at times is endearing versus immature.

Then, there’s Claude and his never-ending patience for Danny’s quirks and flakiness, and Danny’s self-indulgent aura that only ever seems to melt away when he’s with Kate. Anne is at least trying to let loose. While she’s supposed to represent a strong, independent woman starting over, she continues to give off lonely cat lady vibes.

Kate and Danny on the beach laughing in The Four Seasons. Netflix

The Four Seasons isn’t the first to explore the concept of changing lives and friendship dynamics as you get older. Movies like Grown Ups and shows like Friends From College have already done it, but this show offers a welcome mix of maturity and playfulness. While comedic, it explores the sometimes painful issues couples face during the midpoints of their lives in a way that’s raw, real, and relatable. The message it drives home, however, is that solid friendships can help you get through anything.

Whether you’re in your 50s or your 30s, you can’t help but envy this group, and I don’t just mean because they have jobs that allow them to duck away for a week four times a year. It’s because they still take the time to plan these vacations, no matter what life throws at them. The beauty of the show is in the insistence on keeping this tradition going.

The welcome humor supplied by a series of unfortunate events on every trip lightens the otherwise somber mood at times. This season, those involve everything from a lockdown and nachos to a carriage ride in Italy gone wrong. But it’s the moments of raw honesty, sitting on a deck with a glass of wine, chatting with an old friend, that reveal so much.

The friends at a table looking back stunned in The Four Seasons. Netflix

What The Four Seasons sets out to remind us is that even as you age, even if your life seems to be in a good place, challenges can pop up when you least expect them. Divorce, children, empty nesting, and career stagnation all come into play.

Ginny is a refreshing reminder of the beauty of starting adult life, but her existence and Nick’s death are also wake-up calls to what the others might have missed, failed to accomplish (or might still have the chance to do), or wish they had done differently. “Every decision feels like I’m trying to stick the landing on my entire f*cking life,” Danny says in one of the most relatable quotes on the show, perhaps ever on television.

Danny laughing with Anne who has her head on his shoulder in The Four Seasons. Netflix

The underlying message is that deep friendships feed the soul, even if they frustrate it sometimes, too. It’s lovely to see friends lean on one another in meaningful ways through the most complicated life changes.

The Four Seasons is a love letter to honest friendships, the one constant in life through the day-to-day grind. Making the time to get together even once a season is a needed reset because sometimes, your friends are the calm amidst the chaos. There’s value in making memories with friends who aren’t only here for a season or a reason, but for a lifetime.

Diablo 4 is celebrating three years of demon slaying with increased XP rewards, the return of the game’s March of the Goblins event, and daily free cosmetics, but players won’t have long to take advantage of them.

From June 2-9, players will enjoy the Mother’s Blessing XP buff, granting increased multiplicative XP in both the game’s seasonal and Eternal realms. That will also be the same day the game’s March of the Goblins event returns, heralding increased treasure goblin sightings and a reputation board that can be progressed by slaying them for even more rewards.

It’s a nice way to supercharge the back half of Diablo 4’s current season, as players need increasingly more gold and XP to max out their characters in the endgame. But developer Blizzard is sweetening the deal even further with five days of free premium cosmetics that can be claimed from the Diablo 4 in-game shop. Below is the full schedule.

  • June 1: Blood Raven’s Talon (One-handed Sword)
  • June 2: King Kanai’s Last Stand (Shield)
  • June 3: Nangari Wounder (Dagger)
  • June 4: Overlord’s Odium (Two-handed Axe)
  • June 5: Flamefinger’s Claws (Glaive)

Diablo 4’s second expansion, Lord of Hatred, released in April, making it the first game in Blizzard’s long-running ARPG franchise to receive more than a single expansion. Lord of Hatred brought major changes to Diablo 4’s endgame with the addition of War Plans, reimagined itemization with the addition of the Horadric Cube, overhauled class skill trees, a revamped difficulty system, and two new classes, the Paladin and Warlock.

The result is an expansion that in many ways makes Diablo 4 feel like an entirely new game, even if Blizzard has admitted its constant changes make the game “hard for players to keep up with.”

The meta of Diablo 4 continues to shift in the weeks following Lord of Hatred’s launch, with a seemingly inconspicuous bug fix resulting in a new way to make players basically immortal. Meanwhile, the discovery of Mythic Unique Charms has upended what a “perfect” build looks like for those lucky enough to be able to find one.

If you’ve worked on enough screenplays, you know how insane it can be to describe someone walking across a room for the umpeenth time.

It can cross your eyes and make you feel like you’re at your wits’ end.

Well, I get it, I’ve been there.

Screenwriting is a visual medium where real estate is at an absolute premium. You want to say things short and sweet, but you also want to be evocative of a tone or a mood.

When you use generic, mundane verbs, you miss a golden opportunity to reveal character, establish a feeling, and dictate the pacing of your film right from the page.

So today, I want to go over some ways to get past that in your writing by using action verbs to replace more mundane words you use all the time.

Let’s dive in.

1. Instead of “Walks” or “Goes”

When I do my last polish, I go through my whole script and look for the word “walks.” Then I try to assess if there’s a better way to say someone crosses the room.

This is my final check before I send it out.

As you know, in a script, movement is never just about getting from Point A to Point B. How a character moves tells the audience everything we need to know about their confidence, their emotional weight, or their motives before they even open their mouth.

It’s a great opportunity to show and not to tell.

Here are some options for you for common moods.

  • To show hesitation or fear: Creeps, tiptoes, edges, skulks, falters.
  • To show anger or purpose: Strides, marches, stalks, storms, barges.
  • To show exhaustion or defeat: Trudges, shuffles, drags, plods, slumps.
  • To show arrogance or confidence: Struts, saunters, glides, sweeps.

The Difference on the Page:

  • Mundane: Tom walks into his boss’s office. (We have no idea what Tom is feeling.)
  • Cinematic: Tom slinks into his boss’s office. (We instantly know Tom is guilty, scared, or defeated.)

2. Instead of “Looks” or “Sees”

Again, this is another common word where you can probably do better in some of your seasons, especially in the first ten pages.

You want your characters to interact with their environment dynamically.

So why not try…

  • Intense or aggressive focus: Glares, rivets, locks eyes, bores into, scrutinizes.
  • Fearful or secretive sight: Peers, glances, darts, scans, sneaks a look.
  • Admiration or lost in thought: Gazes, drinks in, drinks down, drinks up, drinks in, marvels, drinks in.
  • Casual or unfocused sight: Glimpses, notes, catches, sweeps.

The Difference on the Page:

  • Mundane: Elena looks at the mysterious envelope on the desk.
  • Cinematic: Elena’s eyes lock onto the mysterious envelope on the desk.

3. Instead of “Takes” or “Gets”

I’m just going through all the greatest hits of words you probably use on every page in every scene, so you hear what I’m saying. It doesn’t mean you need to change all of them; it means you should be selective.

How a character physically handles objects reveals their relationship to that object and their current state of mind.

We love actors doing thignsl ike putting away dishes or tossing a baseball against a wall.

Think about integrating action here.

  • Aggressive or desperate actions: Snatches, yanks, claws, seizes, plucks.
  • Gentle or cautious actions: Cradles, retrieves, lifts, slips, coaxes.
  • Careless or rushed actions: Grabs, scoops, scoops up, scoops away, yanks, chucks.

4. Instead of “Sits” or “Stands”

How are you getting up and down out of your chair? It’s different if it’s a Lazyzee Boy versus the electric chair!

Posture changes are micro-beats in a script. They punctuate a conversation. Don’t let them be dead weight.

  • Sitting with emotion: Collapses, drops, sinks, perches, slouches, nests.
  • Standing with emotion: Towers, rises, springs, uncoils, hovers.

The Golden Rule: Avoid “The Thesaurus Trap”

I know the temptation is to look for giant words to show people how smart you are, but you have to avoid that trap.

Upgrading your verbs is crucial, but there is a dangerous line between evocative screenwriting and pretentious prose.

You don’t want to make the reader grab a dictionary while they flip pages.

If a director can’t easily instruct an actor how to perform the verb, or a cinematographer can’t easily capture it, pick a simpler word.

Keep your choices sharp, punchy, and instantly visual.

Summing It All Up

These are easy tricks to make your writing more cinematic and to help your words pop off the page. Spicing this stuff up will not only open the reader’s imagination, but your own imagination, too.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

Dandruff is one skin issue many of us are quick to self-diagnose. Not just because the symptoms seem obvious, but because we’re frequently hit with marketing for the latest, greatest treatment options, so the condition is generally top of mind. Itchy scalp keeping you up at night? Must be dandruff! Little white spots on the shoulders of your sweater? Add dandruff shampoo to the shopping list! We’re less likely to stop and consider whether the root cause of those flakes might be scalp psoriasis, which can look similar but be more stubborn and difficult to treat.

While both conditions involve itchiness and flakes, their causes differ. Psoriasis is a chronic condition characterized by an overactive immune response that leads to excessive skin cell growth, creating thick patches called plaques. These can become severely itchy or even painful, and often require prescription treatments. Dandruff, on the other hand, arises from an overgrowth of a yeast called malassezia that’s commonly found on the scalp. It can usually be managed effectively with over-the-counter remedies and often resolves on its own after middle age.

Despite these key differences, the two scalp conditions can look and feel similar at times. “Even for a dermatologist, it can occasionally be difficult to tell the difference between scalp psoriasis and dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis,” says Shira Wieder, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care in New York City. “In fact, there is even an overlap category we call sebopsoriasis.” That said, there are a few distinguishing characteristics that you can look for.

First, assess whether dryness and flaking are widespread across the scalp or confined to specific areas. “Generally, with dandruff, the borders of the flaking areas are poorly defined and the flakes diffusely scattered, while in psoriasis the plaques are well demarcated,” Dr. Wieder says. Another factor to note is the color and texture of the flakes themselves; dandruff tends to be yellowish-white, fine, and greasy, while psoriasis produces flakes that are silvery-white, thick, and dry.

If parts of your scalp look highly inflamed, that’s another sign that you may be dealing with psoriasis. Psoriasis plaques usually appear red or pink against lighter skin or brown, purple, or gray against darker skin. On the other hand, with dandruff, color changes of the skin are less common, Dr. Wieder notes. Temporary hair loss can also be a sign of psoriasis.

Another consideration is whether you’ve experienced similar skin symptoms beyond your scalp, since both psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis may crop up in multiple locations. “We can often look to other areas of the body to help make the diagnosis,” Dr. Wieder says. “Seborrheic dermatitis can often also be found in sebaceous gland–rich areas, including the hairline, sides of the nose, within and above the eyebrows, and behind the ears. Psoriasis plaques, [on the other hand], are often found on the elbows, knees, the cleft of the buttocks, and nails.”

Finally, if dandruff shampoos have not done much to ease the itching and flaking, that could be a clue that you actually have psoriasis—with an important caveat. “I find that people often don’t use dandruff shampoos correctly,” Dr. Wieder says. “They need to be left on the scalp at least five minutes to have an effect before rinsing off. So when I’m assessing a patient who [thinks they have] dandruff that’s not responding to the over-the-counter topicals, the first question I ask is how they use them.” She also suggests trying a couple of different active ingredients. For example, some shampoos contain selenium sulfide or pyrithione zinc to treat yeast overgrowth, while others contain ketoconazole. “If dandruff shampoo has never helped despite being used properly—or has helped only minimally—that’s a good time to see a dermatologist to make sure there isn’t something else going on, like scalp psoriasis,” she says.

This post contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of “The Testaments.” Proceed accordingly.

That prison matron who lets Aunt Lydia in to see Becka in “The Testaments” Season 1 finale? She’s got the keys to far more than just the teen’s cell.

The white-haired woman dressed in black and wearing gloves is author Margaret Atwood, who wrote the novels “The Handmaid’s Tale” and its sequel, “The Testaments,” both of which serve as source material for the Hulu series of the same names.

Atwood appears briefly in Episode 10, titled “Secateurs,” when Lydia visits Becka, who has been detained after murdering her father. “Don’t agitate her,” Atwood’s character warns the Aunt. (Read a full recap here.)

“It was such an incredible experience working with the woman who gave us the space to create this TV show, and to work alongside her was also incredible,” says Mattea Conforti, who plays Becka. “It was the day on set where I had to be mentally insane in a prison, so I wanted to really communicate to Margaret, exactly what was Becka going through at this time, and what had she envisioned for Becka’s character at this point?”

Conforti adds that Atwood in character “was so strong, and she was scary!” but between takes, “She was so sweet.”

The Testaments was Margaret Atwood’s second cameo in Gilead

The episode marks Atwood’s second on-screen appearance in Gilead: The first came in “The Handmaid’s Tale” series premiere, in which she played an Aunt who hit Elisabeth Moss’ June at the Red Center.

Or, as showrunner Bruce Miller remembers it while chatting with TVLine: “She smacks Lizzie upside the head.” Miller says that Atwood is a very welcome visitor to the show’s Toronto soundstages, and that she observed filming on a few occasions before shooting her scene.

“The women in the cast who are huge Margaret Atwood fans grew up on Margaret Atwood, and they were on fire the day that she came. They were just vibrating,” he recalls. “We made sure she had a cool costume. She has as much fun as you can imagine Margaret Atwood having. She pretends to be so mean, but it’s just delightful.”

Did you notice Atwood in the finale? Have you heard what Moss had to say about June’s latest “Testaments” appearance? Got predictions for Season 2? Let us know in the comments!

While hot new bombshells will soon be entering the villa for Season 8, negativity won’t be, as “Love Island USA” reminded viewers to play nice online.

Ahead of Season 8’s June 2 premiere, the social channels for “Love Island USA” issued a reminder to viewers, in which they encouraged fans to “keep it kind,” as well as “positive.”

“The Villa runs on good vibes, and so does this community,” the message posted to Instagram read. “We love seeing your reactions, opinions and debates, but everyone deserves to feel safe and respected.”

The statement continued: “This is a space for fun, not negativity – so keep it kind, keep it positive and remember: this is LOVE island!”

This isn’t the first time the show, which is a spinoff of the British “Love Island” and hosted by Ariana Madix, has had to remind its viewers to cool it with the negativity on social media.

In fact, last June, “Love Island USA” released a similar message to fans, writing on X at the time, “We appreciate the fans, the passion for the series and the amazing group of Islanders who are sharing their summer with us. Please just remember they’re real people — so let’s be kind and spread the love!”

Despite the reminder, plenty of “Love Island USA” fans chimed in with some cheeky responses on Wednesday, with one fan commenting, “Let’s vote for who gets canceled first.” Another wrote, “The disclaimer before releasing the cast tells me all I need to know.” A third noted, “This post seems performative af.”

Though some fans co-signed the message, with one responding, “I promise we will be good…”

“Love Island USA” Season 8 premieres June 2 at 9:00 p.m. ET on Peacock.

David Henderson, a poet who rose to prominence with the pathbreaking Black Arts Movement in the 1960s and went on to write a best-selling biography of Jimi Hendrix that changed the way many interpreted Hendrix’s life, music and untimely end, died on May 14 in Lincoln Park, N.J. He was 83.

His death, at a nursing home, was caused by complications of dementia, his daughter, Najuma Henderson, said.

In 1962, the Harlem-born Mr. Henderson was a central figure in the founding of the Society of Umbra, a pioneering Black literary collective based in the East Village section of Manhattan. Like Calvin Hernton, Tom Dent, Lorenzo Thomas, Askia Touré, Steve Cannon and others associated with the group, he sought to forge a new, distinctly Black aesthetic sensibility, unmoored from white Western artistic ideals.

“We were shut out of the discourse,” Mr. Henderson recalled of the era in a 2009 interview with Africultures, a French news and culture website. “That exclusion is what Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Robert Hayden, James Baldwin, were fighting.”

Umbra became a foundation for the broader Black Arts Movement, which emerged in the mid-1960s, spearheaded by fiery writers like LeRoi Jones (later Amiri Baraka), Lawrence Neal and Mr. Touré, and which also included figures from the visual arts, theater, dance and music.

“We were the revolutionaries,” Ishmael Reed, the celebrated poet, playwright and provocateur, said in an interview. No longer, Mr. Reed added, did Black writers find it necessary to follow the narrative conventions of an Ernest Hemingway or Henry James.

“We broke with that,” he said. “We went to folklore, and to the street.”

Mr. Henderson’s “experiential montages,” as Kirkus Reviews described his work, channeled both the hope and rage of the civil rights era, drawing from Black oral traditions and the rhythms of rock ’n’ roll, Motown and jazz.

As he wrote in the title poem of his 1970 collection “De Mayor of Harlem”:

silent natives screaming
thru western guns swords axes
tall tenor saxophones
blaring black trumpet
pages of swords.

Mr. Henderson was born on Sept. 19, 1942, the elder of two sons of Raymond Henderson, a chief petty officer in the Coast Guard, and Myrtle (Brown) Henderson, a telephone operator.

As a teenager, he left home and moved downtown to the East Village to pursue poetry. “This was the early 1960s,” Mr. Henderson later recalled. “Change was happening before our eyes, but I’m not certain I saw it.”

He began mingling with New York’s Black creative scene, including jazz artists like the saxophonist Archie Shepp, the pianist Cecil Taylor and the surrealist band leader Sun Ra, with whom he would later collaborate.

In the early 1970s, he was hired to teach at the University of California, Berkeley, the first of several academic positions he held over the years. With him was his wife, Barbara T. Christian, who went on to become a professor of African American studies at Berkeley and a prominent authority on contemporary American literary feminism.

His marriage to Ms. Christian ended in divorce in 2000, after a 20-year separation. In addition to his daughter, with Ms. Christian, Mr. Henderson is survived by a son, Imetai Henderson, from another relationship, and four grandchildren.

Soon after arriving in California, Mr. Henderson embarked on a five-year journey to complete a book on Hendrix, who died in London on Sept. 18, 1970, at 27.

Mr. Henderson was far from a music journalist, but had written about a 1968 Hendrix concert for the rock magazine Crawdaddy.

“I had gotten to know Hendrix a little bit in the clubs in Manhattan, hanging out,” Mr. Henderson once recalled in a video interview, “and I told him I was going to write something about him.”

His friendship with Hendrix helped open doors, spurring many who had been close to the guitar legend to open up, including his father, Al Hendrix. Mr. Henderson also gained access to Hendrix’s personal diaries, private correspondence and home recordings.

“Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child of the Aquarian Age” was published in 1978. (It was later expanded and retitled “’Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky: Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child.”)

The first major biography of Hendrix, the book was, according to the rock writer Greil Marcus, “surely the most serious attempt yet to make sense of the life of a Sixties icon.”

Mr. Reed once described it as “part thriller and part lament for some tragic lives who enlivened an exciting decade.”

The book stood out among rock biographies for its New Journalism-style narrative approach, which included flowery poetic passages and — to the chagrin of some critics — recreated inner monologues and other devices reminiscent of fiction.

Most striking, however, were its conclusions about Hendrix’s death. The book fiercely disputed the widely accepted account, first advanced by his girlfriend Monika Dannemann and later repeated in biographies, like Charles R. Cross’s acclaimed “Room Full of Mirrors” (2005), that Hendrix had taken a large number of powerful sleeping pills at her hotel and choked on his own vomit.

“As a result,” Mr. Henderson wrote, “millions of people all over the world thought that Hendrix had died the typical rock star death: drug overdose amid fame, blondes, opulence, sex.”

Based on unearthed legal documents, along with interviews with hospital and ambulance attendants and others present during those final days, Mr. Henderson concluded that Hendrix “did not die of a drug overdose. He was drowned.”

The updated version of the book posited that Hendrix had been suffocated with an “impossible” amount of red wine — to the point that it was matted on his clothes and hair and flowing out of his nose and mouth, even after his death, despite his relatively low blood-alcohol content.

And, Mr. Henderson wrote, various shadowy forces had motives to harm Hendrix, including organized crime and federal agencies seeking to do damage to the far-left counterculture.

To fans, particularly white ones, Hendrix was long seen as a towering figure of the psychedelic era who, with his ur-hippie persona and starring role at Woodstock, transcended race.

That was false, Mr. Henderson argued. To him, Hendrix was a distinctly Black artist whose music was deeply grounded in the blues and honed on the Southern chitlin circuit, a network of venues that catered to Black performers in segregated cities.

Far from being colorblind, as many white rock writers portrayed him, Hendrix came to embrace Black power every bit as much as flower power — to the point that his growing support for the Black Panthers had put him in the cross hairs of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Jimi Hendrix was a classic Black ghetto ‘smoothie,’” Mr. Henderson wrote, “whose genius was electric guitar. He achieved an unmatched virtuoso style and became a musician’s musician, a player’s player, and a priest of the new age in Afro-American ceremonial music.”

David Henderson, a poet who rose to

Do you think a film investor would know what a drop shot was? Filmmakers understand – but an investor wants to know about IRRn and MOIC.
and filmmakers are going ‘wha…?” Every filmmaker should understand IRR and MOIC when talking to investors.

Why?
Because this is how investors decide whether your film is a good investment or not.

Let me explain

MOIC stands for Multiple on Invested Capital. In simple terms, it measures how much money comes back compared to what went in.

ie: If an investor puts in £100,000 and gets £100,000 back, the MOIC is 1.0. Nobody lost money, but nobody made money either.
If that same £100,000 returns £200,000, the MOIC is 2.0. The investor doubled their money.

Simple enough.

But there is another metric investors care about just as much, sometimes more: IRR.

IRR stands for Internal Rate of Return. What it really means is this:
How long does it take to get the money back?

  • A week?
  • A year?
  • A decade?

Investors think in timelines. The faster money returns, the faster it can be reinvested into the next project.

I asked Dean Goldberg how he explains IRR and MOIC to people who struggle with financial jargon. His answer was brilliant.

“Most people don’t get it. I’ve tried for years to explain it.
So forget the abbreviations and think about it the way your grandfather on that amish mennonite farm would have understood it.”

IRR and MOIC Explained Like a Farmer

It’s true. I grew up on a Mennonite farm outside Toronto. so, let me try and explain  investment like farming.

MOIC is the total harvest.

IRR is how quickly the crop grows and how many times you can plant and harvest in the same period.

TRUTH: A fast-growing crop with a smaller harvest can often be more valuable than a giant crop that takes years to mature.

MOIC = Total Yield

A farmer asks:
“How many sacks of grain did I get from the seeds I planted?”

That is MOIC.
It does not care how long the crop took to grow. It only cares about the final pile of grain.

IRR = Speed of the Crop Cycle

Now the farmer asks:
“How quickly did the crop grow, and how many times can I replant during the year?”

That is IRR.
A crop that grows in three months may allow four harvests a year.
Another crop might take two years to mature.

Even if the slow crop produces more grain overall, the faster crop may be the better business.

Three Farmer Examples

1. Fast Crop vs Slow Crop

  • Crop A grows in three months and produces 2 tonnes.
  • Crop B grows in two years and produces 4 tonnes.
  • Crop B has the larger total yield.
  • Crop A produces more yield per year.

Many farmers would choose Crop A because it keeps the farm moving and generates cash flow faster.

2. Potatoes vs Walnut Trees

Potatoes produce a decent harvest every season.

Walnut trees may eventually produce enormous value, but you could wait ten years before seeing meaningful returns.

Same land. Same effort. Different speed of return.

3. Renting Out a Field

A farmer rents a field for £1,000.

Option A pays back next month.

Option B pays back over three years.

Same amount of money.

But the faster payment allows the farmer to reinvest sooner.

That is IRR.

One Sentence Summary for Farmers

  • MOIC is how big the harvest is.
  • IRR is how quickly you can harvest and replant.

Investors care about both, but speed often matters more.

Now let’s translate this into filmmaking.

MOIC = Total Revenue

This is the total amount your film eventually earns.

Imagine you make a microbudget feature for £100,000.

Option A

The film earns £300,000 over ten years.

Option B

The film earns £200,000 in six months.

Option A has the bigger total return.

Option B is often the better investment because the money comes back quickly, allowing you to finance your next film.

That is the key difference.

IRR = How Fast You Recoup

Independent filmmakers live and die by recoupment speed.

Fast recoupment means:

  • investors get paid back
  • you can raise money for the next film
  • momentum continues
  • your career keeps moving

Slow recoupment can stall your career for years, even if the final number looks impressive on paper.

Three Filmmaker Examples

1. Festival Sale vs Slow Drip

Your film premieres at Raindance Film Festival.`A streamer offers £150,000 immediately.
Another distributor offers the same amount spread over eight years.
Same total revenue.

Very different outcome.

The fast sale allows you to make the next film immediately.

2. Crowdfunding vs Backend Points

You raise £20,000 through crowdfunding in two weeks and begin shooting immediately.
Or someone promises £20,000 in backend points that may or may not arrive years later.

Same theoretical value
Completely different practical value.

3. MG Upfront vs Long Recoup Waterfall

A sales agent offers a £50,000 minimum guarantee on signing.
Another offers £50,000 only after marketing costs, expenses, overhead, and recoupment.

Same number on paper.

One arrives now.
The other may arrive when your hair has turned grey.

How Studios Think

Major studios do not think film by film.
They think in slates, franchises, and cash flow cycles.

For studios:

  • fast returns are gold
  • slow returns slow down the entire slate
  • money must come back quickly to finance the next project

Studios care about velocity, not just total revenue.
Independent filmmakers often focus only on how much money a film eventually earns.

But if indie filmmakers start thinking a little more like investors, they negotiate smarter, structure deals better, and protect their careers.

The Real Lesson

A film is not just art. It is also a financial engine.

The question is not only:
“How much money will this film make?”

The better question is:
“How quickly will the money come back?”

Because speed keeps careers alive.

One Sentence Summary for Filmmakers

MOIC is the total return.

IRR is how quickly the return arrives.

And in independent filmmaking, speed often matters more than size

The free fare zone in downtown Calgary will remain in place for now, after city council voted to defer a decision on its future until next year.

After a lengthy debate Tuesday evening, city council voted 9-6 in favour of a heavily amended recommendation to defer deciding on whether to keep or remove the free fare zone until a discussion on Calgary Transit’s updated fare strategy in early 2027.

Councillors Rob Ward, DJ Kelly, Myke Atkinson, Raj Dhaliwal, Harrison Clark, and Mayor Jeromy Farkas voted against the move.

“My preference on the free fare zone would’ve been to make a decision one way or another either to keep it or to scrap it,” Farkas told reporters Wednesday. “I think the uncertainty is going to be a big issue for us.”

It comes after city administration recommended ending the free fare zone after Calgary Transit conducted a review of the zone late last year.

The free fare zone, which runs the length of 7 Avenue in the downtown core, has allowed for riders to use the CTrain free of charge since 1981.

Transit advocates said they’re glad the service will remain in place for now, but remain concerned the zone will still be eliminated after the deferral.

“It does feel like this council is a little bit indecisive about how we’re going to manage our transit service,” said Alex Williams with the Calgary Transit Riders group.

According to city administration, the recommendation to scrap the free fare zone was driven by the need to “improve safety for customers.”

The move was expected to generate an additional $5 million in fare revenue per year, which transit officials said could be reinvested into furthering improvements in transit safety.

“The majority of social disorder on the CTrain starts down at the free fare zone,” said Ward 6 Coun. John Pantazopoulos. “The right approach is get the data, consolidate it into the fare strategy, and then we can decide what we want to do with the free fare zone.”

The elimination of the zone would give transit peace officers the lawful authority to remove disruptive riders, address loitering and intervene before issues escalate, a city report into the issue said.

Williams said he is “not buying” the argument that scrapping the free fare zone would improve safety.

“It’s not going to make the safety issue go overnight,” he said. “It’s going to be an excuse to harass and bother people who might literally just be walking on the sidewalk.”

According to Andrew Doudican with the Calgary Downtown Association, the free fare zone isn’t a “catalyst for social disorder” in the downtown core.

“It does experience symptoms of what exists in our downtown core, we do have safety issues we need to address,” he told Global News. “I think that’s being addressed currently by Mayor Farkas to introduce a downtown police station.”

That motion, co-signed by several councillors, was given the green light by city council Tuesday.

City administration will now work with the Calgary Police Service to conduct a feasibility study on bringing back a police station to the downtown core, as well as review options for facilities in the core, including city-owned or city-leased properties “suitable for adaptive reuse, new construction, and public/private partnership models.”

Farkas told reporters Wednesday he didn’t believe the station would be the “silver bullet” to solving downtown safety issues.

“It’s not the be all and end all,” he said. “But this is one way we can have a more visible presence on a 24/7 basis.”

Story continues below advertisement

Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan said the service is open to discussions with the City of Calgary on a downtown station, after the previous station in the core was removed in 2017.

However, the Calgary Police Commission warned a downtown station and its resourcing would require additional funding from city council, which isn’t currently in the police service’s request for the upcoming four-year budget.

Primetime is drawing attention after the release of its first teaser trailer, which features Robert Pattinson portraying journalist Chris Hansen during the height of To Catch a Predator. The upcoming A24 film takes inspiration from the controversial NBC series that became a pop culture sensation in the 2000s. As anticipation builds around Pattinson’s latest transformation, many fans are wondering when Primetime will be released and whether the movie will eventually be available to stream.

Find out more below.

Who Is Chris Hansen?

Hansen is an investigative journalist and television host best known for NBC’s To Catch a Predator, the controversial mid-2000s hidden-camera series that confronted adults accused of attempting to meet minors for sex. The show originally aired as part of Dateline NBC between 2004 and 2007 and became a major pop culture phenomenon because of Hansen’s now-iconic confrontations.

Even years after To Catch a Predator ended, Hansen has remained active in true-crime television and online investigations. He currently hosts Takedown with Chris Hansen, a streaming series focused on online predator stings, and recently released the 2026 special Dangerous Games: Investigating Roblox, which explored child safety concerns tied to gaming platforms.

In Primetime, Pattinson portrays Hansen during the height of the show’s popularity as he attempts to “make television history,” according to the film’s official synopsis.

When Does the Primetime Movie Come Out?

Primetime is currently scheduled for a fall 2026 theatrical release through A24, though an exact premiere date has not been officially announced yet. Multiple reports have pointed to a September 2026 rollout.

How Can I Watch Primetime?

Right now, A24 plans to release Primetime exclusively in theaters first. The film is expected to play in major U.S. theater chains once it premieres later in 2026.

Can I Stream the Primetime Movie?

Not yet. Since Primetime has not been released, there is currently no confirmed streaming date or platform for the film.

However, because A24 has existing output deals with HBO and Max for many of its releases, fans expect the movie could eventually stream on Max after its theatrical run, though that has not been officially confirmed.

ABC News led the 47th annual News Emmys with eight wins, including the top prize for outstanding live news program — the fourth consecutive victory for “ABC World News Tonight With David Muir.” But coming on strong was a Disney sibling: Nat Geo, which won seven News Emmys thanks to “Trafficked With Mariana van Zeller,” which won all of those prizes for the channel.

“Trafficked” led all series with those seven wins, followed by Al Jazeera International’s “Fault Lines,” which won three. Also having a good night was CNN, which landed four News Emmys, including outstanding recorded news program for “The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.”

As for “Trafficked,” the wins are bittersweet, as the show has now ended its run. But its bevy of wins included episodes including “Brides for Sale,” “Black Market Love,” “Scam City,” “Shark Hunters,” “Underground Street Racing” and “The Tranq Dope Underground.”

And among firsts, ABC News Live landed three of ABC News’ eight wins — the most ever for the streaming news channel. Also during the evening, Scott Pelley accepted “60 Minutes” and CBS News’s trophy for Outstanding Hard News Report: Short Form for “The War in Gaza,” and applauded his former “60 Minutes” colleague Sharyn Alfonsi. ABC’s Debra OConnell presented this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award to ABC’s chief Global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz.

The News & Documentary Emmys were divided between news, hosted by comedian and CNN’s “Have I Got News For You” host Amber Ruffin on Wednesday, May 27, while fellow “Have I Got News For You” star Michael Ian Black is set to host the documentary categories on Thursday, May 28.

Presenters at the News Emmys included Lisa Abramowicz (Bloomberg), Jason Bellini (Scripps News), Jim Cantore (Weather Channel), Linsey Davis (ABC News), Jeremy Diamond (CNN), Johnny Harris (YouTube), Vanessa Hauc (Noticias Telemundo), Hallie Jackson (NBC News), Areva Martin (CNN, PBS), Camilo Montoya-Galvez (CBS News), Bill Owens (“60 Minutes”), Scott Pelley (CBS News), Jen Psaki (MS Now), Jorge Ramos (YouTube), Maria Rozman (Spectrum Noticias) and Natasha Zouves (NewsNation).

This repped the second night of a three-evening Emmypalooza at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York. Ruffin’s and Black’s “Have I Got News For You” colleague Roy Wood Jr. hosted the Sports Emmys on Tuesday.

This year’s News & Documentary Emmys nominees came from from more than 2000 submissions, with eligible programs that that originally premiered sometime during 2025. More than 900 peer professionals chose the nominees.

Among Wednesday’s highlights: Student journalist Santiago Campos, a senior from Washington, D.C.’s District of Columbia International School, wowed the News Emmys crowd on Wednesday night by calling out changes at CBS News as he accepted this year’s Mike Wallace Memorial Scholarship — named after the legendary CBS journo.

“When the revolutionary generation put pen to parchment 250 years ago, they chose to align themselves to a vision of public freedom reinforced a decade later by the First Amendment. Generations of writers, publishers and broadcasters have rightly joined together to push back ever since,” said NATAS president/CEO Adam Sharp. “Journalists are torchbearers for the public right to know and to speak.”

ABC News led the 47th annual News

Wednesday stars Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta-Jones hosted a special FYC event at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery recently, and yes, the vibe was mysterious and spooky. On the Go with Deadline was there to speak with the stars and the creative team behind Season 2, which also included creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, composer Chris Bacon, music supervisors Jen Malone and Nicole Weisberg, as well as VFX supervisor Tom Turnbull.

“It was really interesting,” Ortega, who plays the titular Wednesday, said about Season 2 of the Netflix series going darker in tone. “I felt like, because we had already established the character in the world in the first season, in Season 2, you get to play and explore a little bit more.”

Gough teased that’s a theme that will continue in future seasons.

“Every season, she probably gets a little darker. In Season 2, [Wednesday] understood Nevermore, but then when she came back and was popular, that was something she didn’t like.”

Darkness aside, Millar discussed how expanding on the characters who play Wednesday’s family, specifically Zeta-Jones’ role as mom Morticia, was integral to Season 2’s story.

“The mother-daughter relationship is central to the show. Al and I both have daughters and see the day-to-day mother-daughter relationship, and how it can be fraught and traumatic,” Millar shared. “So it was ripped from the headlines of our own lives, and we loved the chemistry between Jenna and Catherine, which was so strong.”

Zeta-Jones was happy to explore the character of Morticia beyond the basics that were covered in Season 1, while the world and characters were being established.

“Morticia Addams is such an iconic image visually, and we didn’t want to deviate and go away from that at all,” Zeta-Jones said. “But we certainly wanted to find out more about who Morticia Addams is and the growing contentious relationship she has with her daughter and how caring she is as the matriarch of the family. Then having those moments with Jenna, where we get to sword fight and take our verbal play into a physical… it was just great. It was a lot of fun.”

One of the biggest moments from Season 2 was the introduction of Lady Gaga as Rosaline Rotwood. Not only did she play a character on the series, but she also recorded an original song that played during the ball in episode 6.

“It was a great experience. She and her team were so professional, and things went so much smoother than you might imagine they would,” said Weisberg.

Added Ortega, “I mean, how lucky are we? She’s so special and so sweet. You could feel the aftereffect of her being on set. It was so cute watching crew members, who you see every day, suddenly wearing a dress shirt, or when there is a walkway suddenly leading to the set. We’re all walking the walkway, and we’re like, ‘OK, this is the Lady Gaga treatment.’”

ABC News and National Geographic are among

Being a twin myself, this was always one of my favorite movies growing up. Identical twins Annie and Hallie, who were separated at birth due to their parents’ divorce, meet at a summer camp and ultimately discover they are twin sisters living opposite lives on opposite sides of the world. Through a lot of scheming, they decide to swap lives: Annie goes to live with her all-American dad she’s never met, and Hallie lives with her rich British designer mother she’s never met, in a plan to get their parents back together.

Magyar casino online – Praktikus útmutató 2025‑ig

Miért érdemes a magyar casino online piacot választani?

A magyar játékosok egyre inkább a digitális kaszinók felé fordulnak, mert gyorsabb a regisztráció, szélesebb a játékválaszték, és a nyeremények gyakran azonnal kifizethetők. A legfontosabb szempont a megfelelő licenc megléte: a legtöbb megbízható oldal a Malta Gaming Authority vagy a UK Gambling Commission jóváhagyásával működik, ami azt jelenti, hogy szigorú felügyelet alatt áll a pénzügyi folyamatok és a játékfairness.

Ezen felül a magyar casino online szolgáltatók gyakran helyi nyelvű ügyfélszolgálatot, forgalomkorlátozás nélküli banki átutalásokat és a magyar forintban való fizetést kínálják.

A legtöbb magyar online kaszinó egyszerű, négy lépéses regisztrációt kínál: e‑mail cím, jelszó, személyes adatok (név, születési dátum) és a KYC (Know Your Customer) ellenőrzés.

A bónuszok a magyar casino online világ legvonzóbb elemei.

A kifizetéseknél a gyorsaság kulcsfontosságú. A „instant payouts” (azonnali kifizetések) általában a bankkártyák és az e‑pénztárcák esetében 15‑30 percet vesznek igénybe, míg a hagyományos banki átutalás akár 2‑3 munkanapot is igénybe vehet. A táblázatban összefoglaltuk a legnépszerűbb magyar casino online platformok kifizetési sebességét.

Kaszinó Üdvözlő bónusz Minimum befizetés Kifizetési sebesség Licenc
CasinoMax 200 % + 100 ingyenes pörgetés 10 000 Ft 15 perc (e‑pénztárca) Malta Gaming Authority
BetKing 100 % 50 000 Ft 5 000 Ft 30 perc (bankkártya) UKGC
LuckySpin 150 % 30 000 Ft + 50 pörgetés 8 000 Ft 2‑3 nap (banki átutalás) Curacao eGaming

Mobil és asztali élmény – App, web, live casino

A magyar játékosok körében egyre népszerűbb a mobilra optimalizált kaszinó élmény.

A felelős játék kulcsfontosságú minden magyar casino online szolgáltatásnál.

  • Hogyan tudom korlátozni a játékidőmet? A felhasználói fiók beállításainál beállíthatsz napi vagy heti limitet, vagy akár önkizárást is kérhetsz.
  • Biztonságos-e a mobil app?

Összegzés – Mit vegyél figyelembe a választásnál?

Miért érdemes a magyar casino online piacot

Reading Lidia Rauch’s Apartheid’s Granddaughter reminded me that history doesn’t stop when laws are rewritten.

It lingers in families, in systems, and in the way we see one another. That is why the title feels so charged: it points to what we inherit not only from relatives, but from the country itself — the stories we are told, and the silences we are taught to keep.

I think of how surnames, accents, or even the schools we attend carry traces of the past. They are not neutral; they are shaped by what came before.

Shadows in Everyday Life

What struck me most is how apartheid is not treated as a closed chapter. It is still present in the unequal spaces we move through every day. We see it in education, in housing, in access to opportunity and in the assumptions people make before they have even heard someone speak.

Racism today is often quieter than the old laws, but it still shapes how people are treated, who is believed, who is watched, and who is expected to prove they belong. A child from a township school may have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously, while a family’s address still determines whether doors open or close.

Divided Perspectives

I kept thinking about how differently people experience this reality. Some want apartheid to remain something we only discuss in history class. Others live with its effects every day. That difference in perception is important. It shapes how people talk about fairness, race, privilege and responsibility. It also reveals how easy it can be for some to look away when injustice no longer touches them directly.

I think of workplace debates where one person insists “we’ve moved on,” while another quietly carries the weight of being overlooked or doubted.

Generational Weight

The image of a granddaughter carries emotional force. She is close to the story, but not the origin of it. Younger generations inherit privilege, pain, or both — and that tension gives the idea its depth. A student born after 1994 may still inherit the benefits of generational wealth, or the scars of generational exclusion.

That layered inheritance is what makes the metaphor so resonant.

Global Mirrors

I also found myself thinking about the world beyond South Africa. Across the globe, people are still wrestling with inherited injustice. In the United States, debates about race, policing, voting rights and what children are allowed to learn continue to expose deep divisions. In Europe, arguments about migration and belonging often reveal who is welcomed and who is treated as an outsider. Even in countries that pride themselves on equality, the contradiction between professed values and resisted change is striking.

Subtle Patterns of Bias

What gives this reflection its strength is the way it helps us notice the everyday forms of bias that people often excuse. Racism is not always loud. Sometimes it appears in who is trusted, who is followed, who gets called articulate, who is assumed to be competent and whose pain is taken seriously.

It shows up in language, in habits and in the stories, people tell themselves about fairness. These are small signals, but together they form a pattern that continues to shape lives.

Carrying the Past Forward

For me, the book is important because it asks us to think about what we inherit and what we choose to do with it. It reminds us that history is not only something behind us. It is something we continue to carry forward in memory, in behaviour and in structure.

That is why the title stays with me. It is not only about looking back. It is about asking what kind of future we are building from the past we have received.

15-Second summary

OpenCTI is a powerful threat intelligence platform that turns threat data into a connected knowledge graph. The better your inputs, the sharper your intelligence. Feedly’s AI-curated intelligence gives OpenCTI a high-signal source of threats, vulnerabilities, and TTPs mapped to your priority intelligence requirements, so analysts spend their time on analysis rather than collection.

With Feedly Threat Intelligence connected to OpenCTI, you can:

  • Automatically populate your knowledge graph with relevant, structured intelligence from thousands of open-source channels.
  • Start investigations with rich context; every entity is enriched with threat actors, TTPs, malware, CVEs, IoCs, and their relationships.

If you’ve invested in OpenCTI, Feedly Threat Intelligence helps you turn it into a knowledge graph that’s ready for work.

A knowledge graph is only as good as what flows into it

OpenCTI gives CTI teams a powerful foundation for organizing, correlating, and operationalizing threat intelligence. But the platform doesn’t collect intelligence on its own. To get the most out of it, teams need a reliable way to feed it with high-quality, relevant data, consistently and at scale.

Most teams rely on IoC-heavy commercial feeds that deliver volume without narrative context, leaving threat actor profiles thin and TTP coverage patchy. Analysts make up the difference manually: reading blogs, pulling reports, and copying data into the platform. Collection consumes hours that should be going toward analysis.

The result is a team spending more time on data management to feed the knowledge graph, than actual analysis.

Feedly Threat Intelligence automates the collection layer. It continuously monitors thousands of open-source channels and uses AI to extract, structure, and deliver intelligence directly into OpenCTI, so your knowledge graph reflects the current threat landscape without requiring your analysts to build it manually.

Use AI Feeds to focus on what’s actually relevant

Not all open-source intelligence is relevant to your organization. Feedly’s AI Feeds solve the signal-to-noise problem before anything reaches OpenCTI.

AI Feeds are continuously updated streams of intelligence from over 10,000 open sources, filtered to your organization’s specific threat profile: the threat actors targeting your sector, the malware families relevant to your tech stack, and the vulnerabilities that matter to your infrastructure.

You can organize AI Feeds or ****Folders by intel requirements, and the connector continuously pulls from those curated streams. What flows into OpenCTI is curated intelligence scoped to what your team is actually tracking.

Feedly AI Models and the Threat Graph extract and enrich threat data

Feedly’s AI Models automatically identify key entities within each article: IoCs (IPs, domains, hashes, URLs, email addresses, and registry keys), CVEs, malware families, threat actors, TTPs, cyberattacks, etc.

The Threat Graph maps the relationships between extracted entities: which threat actor is using which malware, which CVE is being exploited in which campaign, which TTPs are associated with which intrusion set. These relationships are built from the source reporting itself, preserving the analytical context that makes intelligence meaningful.

By the time intelligence leaves Feedly, it’s no longer unstructured text. It’s a set of connected entities with documented relationships, ready to enrich your knowledge graph rather than just add to it.

Structured for OpenCTI: STIX 2.1 out of the box

OpenCTI is built natively on the STIX 2.1 standard, and so is Feedly’s output.

Every piece of intelligence the connector delivers is formatted as a STIX 2.1 bundle: threat actors, malware, TTPs, indicators, vulnerabilities, and the relationships between them are all expressed as proper STIX objects. They map directly to OpenCTI’s data model without transformation or cleanup on your end.

This means the intelligence that lands in your knowledge graph is immediately usable, correctly typed, correctly linked, and ready for analysts to pivot on.

Setting up the integration

Connecting Feedly to OpenCTI takes about 15 minutes.

What you’ll need:

  • Feedly for Threat Intelligence subscription (with API access)
  • OpenCTI 6.x or later
  • Your Feedly API token
  • Docker or a standard OpenCTI connector deployment environment

Steps:

  1. Deploy the connector. Pull the Feedly connector from the OpenCTI connectors repository (https://github.com/OpenCTI-Platform/connectors/tree/master/external-import/feedly) and deploy it using Docker alongside your OpenCTI instance.
  2. Configure your credentials. Add your Feedly API token and OpenCTI API URL to the connector’s environment configuration.
  3. Select your Feedly streams. Specify which Feedly Boards or Folders you want the connector to pull from. This is where your AI Feeds configuration determines what flows into OpenCTI.
  4. Set your ingestion interval. Configure how frequently the connector checks for new intelligence. Hourly is a common starting point for active threat tracking.
  5. Verify the connection. Once running, the connector will begin importing Feedly reports into OpenCTI as structured STIX 2.1 objects. Check the OpenCTI Data > Ingestion panel to confirm intelligence is flowing.

What it looks like in OpenCTI

Once the connector is running, Feedly intelligence appears in OpenCTI as fully structured reports, each one linked to the entities Feedly extracted, with relationships already mapped in the knowledge graph.

Analysts can pivot directly from a Feedly report to the threat actor profile, explore related malware or campaigns, and correlate Feedly-sourced indicators against internal data, all within OpenCTI’s graph interface, without re-entering a single data point.

Conclusion

Feedly Threat Intelligence and OpenCTI are built for each other: one collects and structures intelligence from the open web, the other organizes and operationalizes it. Together, they replace a slow, manual collection process with a continuous, automated intelligence pipeline, from open-source data to a knowledge graph to analyst action.

If you’ve built an OpenCTI deployment and want to keep it current without burning analyst hours on collection, Feedly is the intelligence source that makes it work.

No escaping inflation right now, somehow an even worse time for consumers than the already bad times of recent years. Shit is way too expensive and it seems like prices won’t go down any time soon. And this goes for everything, from staples like groceries and gasoline, to luxuries like technology and entertainment. But even at a time when price hikes are commonplace, what Valve has just done is unprecedented. They’re raising the price on their proprietary Steam Deck handheld gaming system by an exorbitant amount. Like, legitimately a “f**k you” amount.

Valve

As we saw in a BlueSky post by Wario 64, Valve’s prices for the Steam Deck have gone up close to 50%.

Valve has raised Steam Deck prices in the US

• 1TB OLED $649 -> $949
• 512GB OLED $549 -> $789

still out of stock

store.steampowered.com/steamdeck

Now, $650 for a handheld was already pretty damned expensive. Nintendo’s Switch 2 is only $499.99, for example. But, given the robustness of Steam as a gaming platform and a digital storefront, it’s somewhat understandable. But going up by $300?! Nearly a thousand dollars for a gaming system when nobody in America can afford to drive places is truly criminal.

Valve is clearly trying to keep pace with Sony. Earlier this year, PlayStation announced the prices of its PS5 console would increase. The PS5 Pro went up to $899.99, which is crazy expensive. However, that’s a full console with 4K capabilities. The Steam Deck is still just a handheld. A very good handheld, but not in the ballpark of a PlayStation 5. Valve also announced its own console a while back, but no date or price for that have materialized, owing to costs of everything. So is raising the price of Steam Deck just a way to subsidize the Steam Machine?

The prices and technical specs for Steam Deck.
Valve

It’s a rough time in the gaming world for everyone, but it’s an especially bad time for people trying to get into playing games. Video games are a bigger industry than movies but with a much, much higher cost of entry. With thousand-dollar consoles and AAA games heading steadily toward $100 per game, this century’s definitive artform looks to also be its most exclusive.

After years of fan requests, Donkey Kong 64 is the latest game to be added to Switch Online’s catalogue of Nintendo 64 games.

Rare‘s 3D platformer will be added to Nintendo Classics on June 4, bringing the total number of N64 games available to the service to 43 in the West and 45 overall (Custom Robo and Custom Robo V2 are Japan-only).

Released by Rare in November 1999, Donkey Kong 64 is an open world 3D platformer which uses the same game engine as the Banjo-Kazooie games.

The game has Donkey Kong rescuing his friends from King K Rool – after which they too become playable – and was notorious for the sheer number of collectibles it boasted.

It’s also home to the first appearance of the DK Rap, the Grant Kirkhope-composed song that plays during the game’s intro and has become something of a fan favourite.

Donkey Kong 64 was never released on the Wii’s Virtual Console service, but did make it to the Wii U Virtual Console in 2015. Because Wii U sales were low, however, for a large number of Switch owners this will be their first chance to legally play the game since its original N64 release 27 years ago.

Fans have been hoping for the addition of Donkey Kong 64 for some time, and those hopes were amplified last July when a blurred section of a Nintendo Switch Online trailer appeared to show the box art for Donkey Kong 64, Forsaken 64, Glover and Super Smash Bros.

While Forsaken 64 was then added to the service – lending more credibility to the claims – Glover and Super Smash Bros have still yet to appear.

The addition of Donkey Kong 64 will mark the first new Nintendo 64 game to arrive on the service this year. Last year, a total of five N64 games were added – Ridge Racer 64, Killer Instinct Gold, Forsaken 64, Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble.

NES, SNES, Game Boy and Game Boy Colour games are available as part of the standard Switch Online subscription, which costs £3.49/€3.99/$3.99 for a one-month membership, £6.99/€7.99/$7.99 for a three-month membership, and £17.99/€19.99/$19.99 for a 12-month membership.

Switch Online’s Expansion Pack add-on, which is needed to play Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Sega Mega Drive / Genesis games, costs $49.99 / £34.99 / €39.99 per year.
