Arnold Schwarzenegger motivates with more than gym talks. If one thing the actor has proven apart from his built is his ability to motivate people to do greater things. That does not mean he has not faced losses, criticism, or challenges, but at 75 years old, his consistency and positivity have led him to star in two shows. Add to it his smart presence on social media while having a busy schedule.

Celebrities using social media are not new, and the Austrian actively tries to spread good content and vibes through it. But he recently took to the chance to even acknowledge naysayers with a straightforward message for them.

Right from the Terminator days to his newsletter, Schwarzenegger has kept himself updated with technology. In that process, the actor made sure that negativity still kept its distance from him and others. He recently took to Twitter to reveal this week’s PumpClub activity, which is to remove negativity from life. He said, “I asked my team to give you a hand and use the block button” if his presence made haters feel negative. Showing his class and experience, the entertainer wants both fans and foes to see the good things in life and move on.

The proud conservative actor reads through both the good and bad comments but remains indifferent to them. Having immigrated from another country, the actor crossed many hurdles to get where he is now. People doubted his ability to immigrate, become a bodybuilder, star in the movies, win elections, and continues to work past his prime age. With the same passion as his haters, he proved them all wrong.

The unstoppable force even spread messages of positivity and fitness during the pandemic while following rules. He not only survived it but is more active than ever in personal and professional aspects.

Eva Maria Daniels, producer of independent features “Reality,” “What Maisie Knew” and “Joe Bell,” died on June 30 in London, after battling cancer. She was 43.

Throughout her career, Daniels maintained longstanding partnerships with producer Riva Marker and A24, worked as a producer for The Mill and Company 3 and served as a consultant for the Icelandic Film Fund.

“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” wrote director Börkur Sigthorsson on Facebook.

Most recently, Daniels executive produced the Berlin Film Festival selection and Max feature, “Reality,” which stars Sydney Sweeney and was directed by Tina Satter.

“Eva was hyper intelligent and had a gift for seeking out and supporting artists. She collected friends and art in every country she lived and imbued her friends and colleagues with confidence to trust their creative ambitions,” Marker, who worked with Daniels on “Reality,” said in a statement. “Her passing is a devastating loss to the industry. My friend Eva was kind and formidable and fun. She was an integral producer on all our collaborations and I’ll miss her dearly.”

Daniels began producing in 2009 with a credit on the TV series “P.O.V.” Soon after, she executive produced “The Romantics,” then, in 2012, both “What Maisie Knew” and “Goats.” “What Maisie Knew” was a modern adaptation of Henry James’ 1897 novel starring Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan and Alexander Skarsgard and played at the Toronto Film Festival.

She then served as executive producer on two films starring Richard Gere, both Oren Moverman features: “Time Out of Mind,” and “The Dinner,” in 2014 and 2017, respectively. She then worked with Mark Wahlberg on the 2020 feature, “Joe Bell.” She also served as producer on “Hold the Dark” in 2018 and served as the executive producer on the John Hawkes and Logan Lerman-led indie “End of Sentence” in 2019.

Daniels was born in Reykjavik on July 5, 1979, and attended the University of Iceland and eventually added a degree in film production from KBH Film & Fotoskole in 2003.

She is survived by her husband, Moritz Diller, and her 5-year-old son, Henry.

Despite being an unmitigated success and launching a slew of Marvel Disney+ Series, WandaVision was never renewed for a second season.

As Marvel continues to expand the MCU, the studio has focused on creating new properties on streaming and shied away from continuing more established stories

Photo:©Marvel Studios 2021.

In fact, outside of Loki, and the animated series “What If?…” Marvel has chosen not to renew any of their Disney+ series beyond a first season.

Debra Jo Rupp On Coven of Chaos

In a recent interview with Berkshire Magazine, however, WandaVision star Debra Jo Rupp revealed that Agatha: Coven of Chaos would be something akin to a second season of WandaVision.

Comparing the show to American Horror Story, Rupp noted that the series was a continuation, but also a “Whole new kind of thing”.

“It’s the second season of ‘WandaVision’ for Marvel. It’s very much like ‘American Horror Story,’ where each season is a whole new kind of a thing. I was shocked when they called me. Vecause I really thought that would be it, and I was fine with that. But when they called, I got so excited because it’s a character I never get to play. She’s gonna be great fun.”

While Rupp admitted that she was thrilled to return to the MCU, she would not reveal much else.

“I cannot tell you. I am terrified of these people. They are the most secretive people on the face of the Earth. You are forbidden to talk about anything. I’m afraid they would come arrest me.”

Continuing WandaVision’s Story

While Rupp will not divulge what audiances are in for when Coven of Chaos finally lands on Disney+, she did admit that she will be playing the same character she portrayed in WandaVision.

“This I can tell you: I am basically the same person that I was in ‘Wandavision,’ Mrs. Hart. But in a different kind of a thing. We’ve shot in LA, and I’m packing now as we speak, to go to Atlanta for two months to continue shooting” she said.

Smallville star Allison Mack was released early from prison following her involvement in the NXIVM sex cult. Mack played Chloe Sullivan in Smallville, the Superman prequel series starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent that went on for ten seasons. Seven years after the show ended, the actress would be arrested due to her connection with the NXIVM sex cult, with Mack later being sentenced to serve three years in prison after pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website, Mack was released from the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, last Monday, July 3. Mack’s release is a surprise, as the actress was sentenced back in 2021 to serve three years in prison for her involvement in the NXIVM sex cult. According to PEOPLE, Mack was released early thanks to the First Step Act (FSA) — a law that allows federal inmates to receive up to 54 days of “good conduct” credit for every year of their sentence. Inmates such as Mack can also be released up to 12 months early by completing the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Residential Drug Abuse Program.

Allison Mack’s NXIVM Trial History Explained

In 2018, the FBI arrested a number of people — including Mack — involved in the NXIVM sex cult. The group functioned under the leadership of Keith Raniere, who started the sex cult under the guise of a self-help group for women. That was not at all the true goal of NXIVM, with the group exploiting the women who would join it, as Raniere manipulated some of the members into becoming his sex slaves. Mack was arrested due to her role in recruiting women to join NXIVM, helping Raniere — who was sentenced to 120 years in prison — exploit them.

Initially pleading not guilty after her arrest in April 2018, the Smallville actress would change her stance in the following year. In April 2019, Mack pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and one count of racketeering. Mack admitted to having recruited women to join NXIVM, with the group’s secret sex cult DOS — “Dominus Obsequious Sororium” (Lord/Master of the Obedient Female Companions) — ruining the lives of many. Mack expressed regret over her actions, stating that she had joined NXIVM “to find a purpose” and saw now that she was wrong, saying, “I must take full responsibility for my conduct and that’s why I am pleading guilty today.”

The actress was facing up to 20 years for each charge, but Mack was sentenced in June 2021 to serve three years in prison for her involvement in the NXIVM sex cult. Ahead of her sentencing, Mack issued a letter to the court that apologized to NXIVM’s victims. That letter, along with the actress having pleaded guilty, her show of remorse, and her cooperation during the trial, likely played a role in Mack receiving a lighter sentence. Now, after her early release from prison, the Smallville actress can make amends and start to move on from “the biggest mistake and regret of [her] life,” as she described in her letter.

A camera operator for the YES Network was struck in the head by an errant throw Wednesday night in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was halted for ten minutes as he was wheeled away on a stretcher for medical attention.

Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson attempted to complete a double play when his throw sailed over the head of first baseman Ryan O’Hearn. It instead struck the camera operator Pete Stendel along the first base line.

Stendel clutched his head and fell to the ground.

The cameraman gave a peace sign to the crowd, which gave him an ovation as he was driven off.

July is home to some of the biggest shopping events of the entire year, meaning the temptation to overspend is real. But thanks to the best Prime Day deals under $100, you can still score major Amazon clothing sales, vacuum deals, pet toys and treats on pretty much everything under the sun without going overboard. Who doesn’t love a healthy dose of moderation?

First, some housekeeping: Amazon Prime Day 2023 takes place from July 11 and 12 and will include tens of thousands of discounts exclusively for Amazon Prime members. (Some unofficial deals will also be available for non-members, but you’ll get free two-day shipping and access to much better sales if you sign up. Plus, you can score a free 30-day trial right now.) Although the mega-sale is still on the horizon, under-$100 deals are already hitting the virtual shelves like delicious amuse-bouches before the main course.

Of course, plenty of Amazon bestsellers that were already less than $100 (like bed sheets, leggings, and bike shorts) are going even lower this Prime Day. However, the most exciting discounts might just be on products that were, until this week, much more expensive than a Benjamin: Coffee makers, professional blenders, wireless headphones, cute purses, and wedding guest dresses are all in the mix. Nothing beats a brag-worthy discount, after all.

While the lowest markdowns are still dropping as we write this—we’re keeping our eyes peeled for discounts on big-ticket items from Sony, Samsung, and Apple—these Prime Day deals are still very much worth your time. (We’re also expecting tons of markdowns on Amazon devices, including Kindles, Amazon Echo smart speakers, and Fire TV Sticks.) To help you get started on your haul, we rounded up the best Prime Day deals under $100, including top-shelf personal care items, getaway-ready sunglasses, and Bluetooth speakers, below. Hope everyone had a happy 4th of July yesterday. Mine was a bit up and down. Why? Because the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest toyed with my emotions. For 2 hrs it was on a weather delay. And then there were legitimate Twitter accounts saying it was canceled – until it wasn’t. Which was great. Thank you. My day was made. Granted, the extra waiting didn’t seem to help as I can’t remember the last time Joey Chestnut ate as little as 62 hot dogs, but he still beat the 2nd place guy by double digits. Chestnut might be our greatest American hero at this point. He’s won 8 in a row, and 16 of the last 17 championships, which is just absurd. And it doesn’t look like he’s stopping anytime soon considering no one ever really comes close to him. Do all the sudden you lose the ability to shove that much down your gullet? Is this something you can teach your body or is it something you’re just born with? Is professional eating a sport? Is Joey Chestnut one of the greatest athletes of our generation? All those questions are discussed on today’s Daily Roundup if you’re interested. Not to mention, running down the close to 70 other eating world records that Joey Chestnut has. If you’re unaware, listen on an empty stomach. You might hurl if you don’t.

In discussing the New Orleans episode 5 this season, I wanted to look back at past season in regards to the episode before hometowns to see how the date breakdown went. This is season 20 of the “Bachelorette.” I think we can all agree the last 4 seasons have veered off the normal track of how the episodes have laid out because in 3 of those 4 seasons (Clare/Tayshia’s, Katie’s, & Michelle’s), the leads didn’t even travel to the guys’ hometowns because of COVID. Then last season was the wonky 2 Bachelorette season with Rachel & Gabby, so they weren’t gonna have 6 guys each in the episode before hometowns.

But in the in the 4 seasons previous (seasons 12-15), in the episode before hometowns:

-There was exactly 6 guys left
-There was no rose ceremony and roses were given out on the dates
-There were three 1-on-1 dates and a 3 person group date

Which is what I reported happened this season. In case you forgot, here was the breakdown of the three 1-on-1’s and the 3 person group date in each of those seasons:

Hannah Brown – Jed, Tyler, Mike Johnson (sent home on date). Group – Pilot Pete, Luke P, and Garrett. Luke P and Pilot Pete get roses.
Becca – Colton, Garrett, and Blake (all got roses). Group – Wills, Jason and Leo. Jason got the rose.
Rachel – Bryan, Dean and Peter (all got roses). Group – Matt, Adam and Eric. Eric got the rose.
JoJo – Alex (sent home on date), Jordan, Luke. Group – Chase, Robby, and James. Chase and Robby with roses. Thank God.

I really do wish I could share why I reported there’s three 1-on-1’s in New Orleans, but I don’t out sources. You know that. I think if you saw my proof however, you’d realize why I’m reporting it. And yes, it is possible to know there was a third 1-on-1 in New Orleans without knowing who was on it, which I don’t. It’ll all be confirmed in a couple weeks.

Here’s the screen time for Episode #2 for Charity’s guys according to @Bachelordata

What I’m really waiting for is for Suzana to update the IG follower count. Man, those thinking that just by showing up on this show you’re guaranteed hundreds of thousands of followers, you’re sorely mistaken. None of her final 4 guys are even at 15k followers yet. Granted, we’re only 2 episodes in, but if you compare it to past seasons, they aren’t even in the same stratosphere of where they should be. It’s crazy how little Instagram matters now in Bachelor Nation. Better find a new way to supplement your income, boys. Because this ain’t it.

Colleen Ballinger, who is known for her messily lipsticked YouTube character Miranda Sings, is being criticized for an old video in which she appears to be in blackface while performing Beyoncé’s hit “Single Ladies.”

British social media influencer Paige Christie shared the Miranda Sings clip to Twitter with the caption, “I’m gonna need someone to explain the black on her face….”

Meanwhile, the clip, which was uploaded to YouTube five years ago, is still up on Miranda Sings, although it is unlisted. Comments are still enabled and include YouTubers telling her, “Bestie you’ll need a guitar for this apology,” and, “Girl you’re going to need a whole band for this apology,” referring to the ukulele ditty she created about allegations of inappropriate behavior with young fans.

That song included the lyrics, “I’m sorry I’m not gonna take that route / of admitting to lies and rumors that you made up for clout,” and “the only thing I’ve ever groomed is my two Persian cats / I’m not a groomer, just a loser.”

The singer, who is from Tacoma, Washington, apologized in 2020 for a video in which she and a friend pretended be Latina. “It is not funny, and it is completely hurtful,” she said in a follow-up video. “I am so ashamed and embarrassed that I ever thought this was OK. I was a sheltered teenager who was stupid and ignorant and clearly extremely culturally insensitive… Racial stereotypes are not funny, they’re not a joke, and they should never be joked about.”

She was also recently accused of racist behavior on the set of her Netflix series “Haters Back Off!” by a former assistant. The comedy series, which also costarred “The Office” alum Angela Kinsey, ran from 2016 to 2017.

TheWrap has reached out to Ballinger’s reps for comment.

In May, Portland singer-songwriter Anna Tivel played NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, performing songs from her 2022 album Outsiders supported only by drums and keyboards. She strips back her music even further on the forthcoming Outsiders (Live in a Living Room), re-recording the whole full-length virtually front to back on just her acoustic guitar, accompanied by fellow guitarist Jon Neufeld. Tivel’s folk fingerpicking and soft, compelling voice are reminiscent of Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker, and her songwriting—full of tragic figures and folks down on their luck—brings to mind Elliott Smith.

Like the work of those artists, closing track “The Bell” is marked by its mixture of stark clarity and empathetic warmth. “Lit up like a firecracker, you’ve been burning out for years,” she sings, probing the source of distress: “How’d the world get so confusing, how’d the ache inside your chest/Go from something beautiful to something dangerous?” In just a few resonant details, she sketches a moving portrait of a person who just can’t keep it together anymore—despite, or maybe because of, the fierceness of their passion. Calamity lies just around the corner: “I guess the rain is coming, and it’ll rain like hell,” she warns, “But nothing ever changes ’til you ring the bell.” That chorus offers an image of desperate hope—a promise of salvation delivered with unusual tenderness.

Social media video marketing refers to the use of video content on social media platforms to promote a brand, product, or service.

With billions of active users, social media has become an essential tool for businesses to reach their target audience and create a strong online presence.

Video is an incredibly powerful marketing tool, with 96% of marketers saying that video is a crucial part of their marketing strategy.

This is according to a 2023 survey report by Wyzowl.

Image via Wyzowl

Thanks to platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, video content has become more accessible and easier to produce.

Social media video marketing offers an extremely effective way for businesses to:

  • Showcase their products and services to a wider audience
  • Boost engagement
  • Drive sales

We give you 5 reasons why you should use social media video marketing for your business.

5 Reasons Why Social Media Video Marketing is Essential for Your Business

Social media video marketing is gaining popularity day by day.

According to the aforementioned Wyzowl report, 71% of marketers created social media videos in 2022.

Image via Wyzowl

Why?

First, videos are easy to consume and allow you to convey your message in an interactive and engaging way.

Videos can showcase products or services, provide behind-the-scenes glimpses, or educate viewers on a topic related to the business

Here are more reasons why social media video marketing is important and should be part of your marketing strategy in 2023.

1. High Engagement Rates

Videos on social media have higher engagement rates compared to any other type of content.

They are more visually appealing than images or text alone, which means that videos are more likely to grab the attention of users scrolling through their feeds.

Social media videos have the ability to tell stories and convey emotions that resonate with your audience.

This emotional connection can lead to increased engagement, as users are more likely to like, share, or comment on videos they feel a personal connection to.

The good news is that AI-text-video-generators can easily convert text into a video, saving you time and effort while creating engaging video content for social media.

The need to automate the video creation process is one of the key drivers for the popularity of these text-to-video generators. It’s no surprise the text-to-video AI market is expected to be worth $0.9 billion by 2027.

Image via Markets and Markets

Lack of time to create videos, therefore, shouldn’t be an excuse not to utilize social media video marketing to attract and retain your audience.

2. Builds Brand Awareness

Social media video marketing allows brands to showcase their products, services, and values to a broader audience. This helps them establish their brand image and increase brand awareness.

According to the results of a survey by HubSpot and PlayPlay, 87% of marketers feel that video is extremely effective at creating brand awareness.

Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have powerful algorithms that can help your videos get discovered by people who may be interested in your brand, even if they haven’t heard of you before.

In addition, using relevant hashtags, keywords, captions, and engaging visuals, can increase the chances of your videos being seen by your target audience.

You may use tools like Semrush to find out trending keywords and hashtags. Here is a sample hashtag report from Semrush.

Image via Semrush

Read this Semrush review post on Attrock to determine if it is the right tool for your business.

3. Greater Reach

Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube have billions of active users.

Image via Shopify

Social media video marketing along with social video advertising can, therefore, help you reach a wider audience by leveraging the popularity of these platforms.

As we’ve mentioned earlier, social media platforms use algorithms to suggest content to users based on their interests, behavior, and engagement.

As your video gains more views, likes, comments, and shares, it signals to the algorithm that your content is relevant and valuable to a particular audience.

Your video is then recommended to new users who may be interested in your content, which widens your reach further and increases traffic to your site.

We recommend that you use a powerful form maker to capture qualified leads from the social traffic generated.

4. Boosts Conversion Rates

Videos have been shown to have a significant impact on the conversion rates.

The Wyzowl survey report we mentioned earlier showed that 87% of marketers have experienced an increase in sales as a result of video marketing.

Image via Wyzowl

Social media video marketing can increase conversion rates by capturing the attention of potential customers and engaging them with interesting and relevant content that builds their trust.

When viewers engage with your social media videos by watching, liking, commenting, or sharing, it can increase your reach and visibility to a wider audience. This, in turn, can generate more traffic to your website or social media pages, leading to more conversions.

You can also increase the chances of converting your social traffic to sales by adding Google reviews to your website as social proof.

Reviews from other customers can be a powerful tool for building trust and credibility with potential customers.

5. Humanizes Brands

Social media video marketing can help create a personal connection between your company and your audience.

By showcasing your personality, values, and the people behind the brand through social media videos, you can provide a more emotional and engaging experience for your viewers.

The better the experience you create for your customers, the higher the chances of turning them into brand ambassadors. For this reason, engaging in social media video marketing can also support your ambassador marketing efforts.

Conclusion

Social media continues to evolve and video content on social media is becoming more popular with each passing day.

So, investing in social media video marketing is no longer an option but a necessity for businesses these days.

With its potential to increase brand awareness, engage audiences, drive conversions, and improve customer relationships, it’s time to implement a social media video marketing strategy for your business.

A trailer for the Stranger Things stage play promises fans will not only get to return to The Upside Down soon, but might get some clues into what’s ahead in season five.

The minute-long trailer for Stranger Things: The First Shadow was posted to the show’s social media on Wednesday, and featured a series of clips presented on a static-y analog TV. “The beginning of the Stranger Things story might hold the key to what is next…” the trailer teases. Beyond images of the popular Netflix series’ cast and scenes from seasons’ past, the TV features eight buttons, a clock with spiders spilling out can be seen on the screen and a red-lit stage is also featured.

The trailer marks the second look at the show — expected to open later this year on the West End at the Phoenix Theatre — following a shorter, but just as cryptic, teaser in March. The show was initially announced in July 2022, with Trefry, Daldry and Friedman attached.

The play is set in Hawkins during 1959 in what is described as “a regular town with regular worries.” Among its residents are a young Jim Hopper whose car won’t start; Bob Newby, whose sister won’t take his radio show seriously; and Joyce Maldonado, a girl who just wants to graduate and get out of this town. But when a new student named Henry Creel arrives, he and his family discover that a fresh start isn’t easy as the shadows of the past prove they have a long reach.

“We are beyond excited about Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Collaborating with the brilliant Stephen Daldry has been nothing short of inspiring, and Kate Trefry has written a play that is at turns surprising, scary and heartfelt,” the Duffer brothers said in a previous statement. “You will meet endearing new characters, as well as very familiar ones, on a journey into the past that sets the groundwork for the future of Stranger Things. We’re dying to tell you more about the story but won’t — it’s more fun to discover it for yourself. Can’t wait to see you nerds in London.”

The show is written by Kate Trefry, a co-executive producer and writer on the series co-created by Matt and Ross Duffer. The play is from an original story by the Duffer brothers, as well as Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes) and Trefry. Awarding winning director Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Billy Elliot) will helm the production, with co-direction by Justin Martin.

The creative team includes set designer Miriam Buether; costume designer Brigitte Reiffenstuel; lighting designer Jon Clark; sound designer Paul Arditti; illusions designers Jamie Harrison and Chris Fisher; video design by 59 Productions; movement direction from Coral Messam; wigs, hair and makeup design by Campbell Young Associates; with casting by Charlotte Sutton CDG. International casting consultancy by Jim Carnahan is also on board, as is technical directer Gary Beestone for Gary Beestone Associates.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow serves as Netflix’s first foray into live theater. Sonia Friedman Productions are mounting the play, with executive producer Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps serving as associate producer.

Eva Maria Daniels, the Icelandic producer who most recently executive-produced the Sydney Sweeney project “Reality,” has died. She was 43.

Daniels’ friend, filmmaker Börkur Sigthorsson, posted on Facebook that she “passed away last week in London after a long battle with cancer.” She was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic but by 2021 was opening up about her experience and noting that she was now cancer-free and happy to spend more time with her young child.

“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” Sigthorsson wrote on Facebook.

As a producer, Daniels worked on projects like “Hold the Dark,” Jeremy Saulnier’s thriller set in Alaska and starring Jeffrey Wright and Alexander Skarsgård (you can watch it on Netflix); “Joe Bell,” a based-on-a-true-story drama directed by future “King Richard” filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green and starring Mark Wahlberg; and a pair of movies directed by Oren Moverman and starring Richard Gere – 2014’s “Time Out of Mind” and 2017 “The Dinner.” She also executive produced “What Maisie Knew,” a drama from “The Deep End” filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegel starring Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan and Skarsgård, that was based on Henry James’ 1897 novel of the same name.

“Reality,” her most recent project, was co-written and directed by Tina Satter and based on her play “Is This a Room.” It is based on an FBI transcript taken during an interview with Reality Winner, a former NSA translator who leaked sensitive government documents and who was sentenced to 63 months in prison. Sweeney plays Winner in the film, now on Max.

In 2021 Daniels had opened up an art gallery in Switzerland called Diller Daniels that was designed to highlight the work of Icelandic artists and was speaking openly about her cancer diagnosis, with a sunny outlook on the future.

Survivors include her husband, Moritz Diller, and young son, Henry.

Nelly made serious bank recently after reportedly selling off part of his profitable catalogue for a whopping $50 million.

The hit-making rapper sold 50 percent of his music in exchange for the payout, sources close to him told TMZ.

Nelly (born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.) reportedly sold the rights to the private equity firm HarbourView Equity Partners.

The 48-year-old musician joins the likes of numerous iconic stars who have sold their full or partial catalogues in recent years in exchange for quick payouts, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, David Bowie and four out of five members of Fleetwood Mac.

Unlike some artists who have completely cashed out, the reported deal will still allow Nelly to profit from the other half of his catalogue.

Making bank: Nelly, 48, has sold 50 percent of his publishing rights to HarbourView Equity Partners for $50 million, sources told TMZ; seen in November 2022 in NYC

However, it is unclear if HarbourView Equity Partners now owns half of his songs, or if the firm will be getting 50 percent of the profits from his entire catalogue.

After scoring a major label deal in the late 1990s, Nelly broke out in the year 2000 with his hit debut single Country Grammar (Hot S***), which led his debut album, also titled Country Grammar.

The song was a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and it launched a string of hit releases from the album, which topped the Billboard 200 album charts.

His 2002 follow-up Nellyville was nearly as successful, and it spawned the perennially popular track Hot in Herre, which has become the rapper’s trademark song, thanks to its catchy hook and lush production by the Neptunes.

That album also featured the chart-topping duet Dilemma, which featured Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, and the top 10 hit Air Force Ones.

Over his multi-decade career, Nelly has also scored three Grammy Awards, and is one of the best-selling rappers of all time.

But even though he’s cashing in on his most successful period, the hitmaker isn’t putting music behind him.

Instead, he’s pushing forward with the upcoming release of Heartland 2, a sequel to 2021’s Heartland, which saw him fusing country music with his brand of Midwestern rap.

That LP featured collaborations with major country artists including Florida Georgia Line, Darius Rucker, Jimmie Allen and Kane Brown, among others.

It topped out on the Billboard 200 chart at number 45.

One of the biggest catalogue sales to date belongs to Bob Dylan, who sold the publishing rights to more than 600 songs to Universal music in 2020.

Although the amount the songs sold for was not disclosed, it has been estimated to be anywhere from over $200 million to more than $300 million.

Then, in 2022, Dylan sold his master recordings to Sony Music Entertainment for an estimated $150–200 million.

Neil Young followed Dylan’s example in 2021 by selling 50 percent of his publishing rights to the Hipgnosis Songs Fund in exchange for $150 million.

Several members of Fleetwood Mac have also gotten on the catalogue sales train, with Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and Christine McVie all selling a significant number of songs for undisclosed sums.

Even dead artists have seen their catalogues sold off due to business decisions made by their estates.

The estate of David Bowie, who died of cancer in early 2016, sold his publishing rights to Warner Chappell Music in early 2022 for reportedly more than $250 million, according to Variety.

In 2021, David Crosby — who died in January of this year — sold his catalogue to Irving Azoff’s Iconic Artists Group.

More recently, the estate of the prolific experimental guitarist and composer Frank Zappa sold his publishing rights and his archives, which regularly pump out new posthumous releases, to Universal Music Group for an estimated $25–30 million, according to Billboard. Zappa died in 1993 of cancer.

Meanwhile, Paul McCartney, who famously had the rights to his Beatles songs snapped up from under him by his former friend Michael Jackson, who outbid McCartney when he tried to regain the rights in 1985.

On a 2021 episode of BBC Radio 4’s The Price Of Song, McCartney said he was ‘not keen to sell’ his solo songs after clawing back some of his Beatles recordings over the years.

Robert Downey Jr may be making a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

There is speculation that Robert Downey Jr may be making a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically in the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World. T

There are rumors that Robert Downey Jr might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly in the new movie Captain America: Brave New World. This news has caused a lot of excitement online, especially after reports of him being spotted on the set. Anthony Mackie, who stars alongside Harrison Ford, has been shooting for the fourth Captain America film for some time now, and the movie is expected to feature familiar characters from the franchise.

That apart, author Nawar Shora shared a sneak peek from the film’s sets in Washington, D.C., including a detailed description of his conversation with a security guard involved in the project, fueling further excitement about Downey Jr’s return as Iron Man.

During the interaction, a spoiler emerged regarding RDJ’s potential return as his superhero character. The post mentioned that Robert was spotted driving supercars around the White House. Interestingly, this update coincides with reports of RDJ actively filming for his ‘Dream Cars’ project, which premiered some time ago.

Although Brave New World takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, it remains uncertain whether it will include a flashback scene. There has been considerable speculation surrounding RDJ’s comeback to the MCU. However, despite previous reports hinting at his return, fans are still eagerly awaiting the superstar’s appearance on the silver screen.

While Iron Man’s character met his demise in Endgame, and other MCU characters have passed on their mantles to new actors, there has been no confirmation regarding another actor assuming the role of Iron Man.

Marvel Studios has evolved a lot over the years in regards to its women, both in front of and behind the camera, but has killed off too many of its original female heroes.

What started as a franchise with rumored infamous rules about the permitted roles of women (namely, no female leads and no female villains) and no female directors in sight has turned into one with women at the forefront of many projects – like Black Widow, WandaVision and Hawkeye.

That being said, there’s one thing some Marvel fans have taken notice of that’s not-so-great in terms of the studio’s optics when it comes to its female characters. The early years of the MCU had relatively few of them, but the ones that were present made an impact on audiences and some quickly became fan favorites.

Nowadays there are exponentially more female leads in the franchise, but many still view those from the MCU’s first several years with a certain reverence. That’s why it’s so disappointing that virtually all of the major ones have been killed off, a statistic that has been added to with the recent premiere of Secret Invasion.

1.) Peggy Carter

Marvel

Peggy Carter’s first MCU appearance is in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, a time when women in the MCU were permitted to be little more than love interests (or in the case of Black Widow, a femme fatale type). Basically, they were there to be “eye candy” and revolve around the male characters.

While Peggy does fall under the category of “love interest to the male lead”, it’s clear from the get-go she has more to offer than this. Much like Steve Rogers, the film’s story also sees her working to prove herself in a world that easily dismisses her, and she is shown taking part in some of the action alongside him.

In later projects, she had plenty of adventures and achievements of her own in the time between The First Avenger and when the main action of the MCU picks up, including the founding of SHIELD. Peggy was even the first female MCU character to get a project of her own in the television series Agent Carter, though this was an ABC production and not a Marvel Studios one.

After being shown to be dealing with memory loss in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Peggy passes away offscreen in Captain America: Civil War. This could technically be considered fridging (a sexist trope that sees female characters killed to motivate the male protagonist) since her death is the catalyst for Steve’s actions in the movie and not to serve an arc of her own.

However, this isn’t one that most fans would bat an eye at as Peggy is shown to have been very old at the time and having lived a long, happy life. But In the context of how many other early MCU women have been killed off since then it’s hard not to include it on the list.

2.) Gamora

Gamora, Zoe Saldana, Marvel Studios logo
Marvel

Gamora first appeared in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and while she can be considered the deuteragonist of the movie, she is still a love interest to the protagonist, Peter Quill, is the only female member of the Guardians in the movie, and her stoic, no-nonsense personality falls in line with those of most of the other MCU ladies up to that point.

The sequel (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) strengthens the arc Gamora has with her sister Nebula, which continues into Avengers: Infinity War when she agrees to show their adoptive father Thanos the location of the Soul Stone in order to spare Nebula from being tortured by him.

This is where Gamora ends up meeting her unfortunate end. When Red Skull reveals that sacrificing what one loves most is the only way to obtain the Soul Stone, Thanos throws Gamora off the Vormir cliff to her death.

While it can be argued that this is Gamora sacrificing herself for her sister, its real purpose in the story is to contribute to Peter’s arc as well as reveal more about Thanos as a character, which is what makes this another example of a woman being fridged in the MCU. She notably was also considered to possibly be killed off in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 before it was decided that she would meet her end in Infinity War.

Gamora, or at least a version of her, does come back in Avengers: Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and doesn’t die again, thankfully, but she’s also not quite the same character who was killed off in Infinity War and her death is still disappointing for many Marvel fans.

3.) Black Widow

Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson
Marvel

Black Widow was the first female superhero in the MCU. After a tough upbringing being trained to be an assassin in the infamous Red Room, she made friends with Clint Barton and the two of them eventually joined the roster of the original six Avengers shortly after her first on-screen appearance in 2010’s Iron Man 2.

By Avengers: Endgame, Natasha Romanoff sees the team as her family and is still especially close with Clint. That’s why when the duo is sent to Vormir circa 2014 to obtain the Soul Stone, both are more than willing to throw themselves off the cliff to their deaths so as to spare the other person.

Ultimately, Natasha is the one to succeed in her sacrifice, giving Hawkeye the Soul Stone which eventually leads to a major victory for the Avengers at the end of the movie.

Unlike the previously mentioned deaths, Natasha’s death is not an example of fridging because it serves her own arc; even after all her heroic actions over the years, she feels she has still not wiped out the “red in her ledger” and she believes sacrificing herself will help with that in addition to saving her dearest friend and those who Thanos snapped away in Infinity War.

Still, killing off both the first female Guardian of the Galaxy and the first female Avenger in back-to-back movies, in the same manner, is an eyebrow-raising decision, to put it mildly.

4.) Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff, Elizabeth Olsen, Marvel Studios
Marvel

Compared to the previous women on this list, Scarlet Witch has a complicated history within the MCU. After appearing in a credits scene of 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, she started out as a villain, helping Ultron take down the Avengers in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but ended up switching sides and joining the team by the film’s end. She then gets in trouble with the public after accidentally causing harm to innocent civilians in Captain America: Civil War.

By the end of Avengers: Endgame Wanda is incredibly lonely, having lost both her brother and lover – the latter by her own hand, only for it not to matter anyway – and no longer part of the disbanded Avengers team.

Her actions from this point on are dubious at best, as she kidnaps and enslaves a town to enact her personal life fantasies in WandaVision, then gets corrupted by the Darkhold between the end of that show and the start of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, causing her to attempt to steal the life and children of her Variant from an alternate dimension.

At the end of the movie, she is crushed by rocks and seemingly killed (even though many believe her to have simply used her magic to disappear). Even though this one is debatable as to whether or not the character actually died, it’s clear the filmmakers wanted the audience to believe her to be dead, so it counts for the list.

Wanda’s behavior during the Multiverse Saga has caused plenty of controversy in regard to the portrayal of women and specifically mental health, but her supposed death is indicative of another large problem the MCU has with its women in general.

5.) Maria Hill

Maria Hill, Cobie Smulders, Marvel
Marvel

Maria Hill is by far the least prominent character on this list, but it is her death that reignited the conversation surrounding just how many of the MCU’s foundational female figures have been killed off from the franchise.

She started as a SHIELD agent in 2012’s The Avengers, and while she wasn’t a member of the titular team, her presence as a woman working to help them was welcome at a time the MCU was quite male-dominated.

From there, Maria popped up from time to time but never had a role as prominent as she did in The Avengers until over a decade later in Secret Invasion. Many fans were excited to hopefully learn more about the character and perhaps even see her have an arc of her own for once, but those dreams were dashed when she was murdered by a Skrull posing as Nick Fury at the end of the series premiere.

And any hopes that she was simply a Skrull herself all but disappeared when the credits listed actor Cobie Smulders as a “Special Guest Star”, implying Episode 1 would be her only appearance in the series.

This is a classic case of fridging, as Maria’s only role in the series was to warn Fury about potential trouble ahead and subsequently be proven right by being killed a little later on. Her death serves as a catalyst for Fury’s personal investment in the conflict and doesn’t serve an arc for herself at all.

Maria Hill being the “last woman standing” of sorts in regards to the early MCU makes her death all the more difficult to swallow, and shows that even though the MCU has made many strides in its female representation, it still has some blind spots.

Ubisoft has announced that the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage will include a mode called History of Baghdad. This, as Ubisoft says, is an effort to bring “players closer to history.” The mode will be available for free when the game launches this fall.

History of Baghdad offers historically accurate articles that players can read after discovering specific sites throughout the game, serving as a reward for exploration. These articles cover five topics including economy, belief and daily life, government, art and science, and court life.

Now Playing: Assassin’s Creed Mirage: Story Trailer | Ubisoft Forward

The Assassin’s Creed games are known for their educational features, such as the Discovery Tour featured in Origins. This mode strips away all combat and gameplay, allowing players to focus on learning about ancient Egypt, instead. In earlier entries, players could read entries in a database, rather than exploring via a separate mode. It seems Ubisoft is taking a similar approach with Mirage.

Players can expect to read about many topics, from Baghdadi exports, to bazaars, and even camels as part of the History of Baghdad mode.

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be a return to the gameplay style of the earlier games. Instead of featuring a massive open world and RPG elements, Mirage will be much more linear and will double down on stealth and parkour.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage launches for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 12, 2023.

Films Boutique will handle international sales on Filipino master Lav Díaz’s “Essential Truths of The Lake,” one of the highest-profile titles in the just announced main International Competition at this year’s Locarno Festival.

The Berlin and Lyon-based production-sales company’s fifth collaboration with Diaz following, among others, Venice Golden Bear Winner “The Woman Who Left” and Berlin Silver Bear Winner “Lullaby To A Sorrowful Mystery,” “Essential Truths of The Lake” marks a prequel to Diaz’s ‘When The Waves Are Gone’ that premiered out of competition at Venice last year.

It reprises the character of the ethically conflicted police lieutenant Hermes Papauran, one of the best investigators of the Philippines. When asked what drives a man to search for the truth, Papauran says dejectedly that maybe he just wants to keep inflicting pain on himself.

Faced with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody murders and brazen lies, he continues his struggle to find resolution to a 15-year-old case around a volcanic ash laden landscape and an impenetrable lake. It has become a cross he can barely carry but keeps lugging anyway.

Written as well as directed by Diaz and world premiere at Locarno, “Essential Truths of The Lake” stars John Loyd, Hazel Orencio, Shaina Magdayao, Bart Guingona, and Agot Isidro.

A Philippines, France, Portugal, Singapore, Italy, Switzerland, and U.K. production, “Essential Truths of The Lake” is produced by Epic Media, Films Boutique and Rosa Filmes in co-production with Arte, Bord Cadre Films and Sovereign Films. Bianca Balbuena, Bradley Liew, Jean-Christophe Simon and Joaquim Sapinho serve as delegate producers.

“We are very happy to continue our collaboration with Lav Diaz, Bianca Balbuena, Bradley Liew and Joaquim Sapinho on this new epic film by Lav,” said Simon, Films Boutique CEO.

“Lav is one of the greatest filmmakers of our time, always pushing the limits of the cinematic experience with a strong political message. We are very excited and looking forward to sharing the film with the Locarno Audience for what will be a special experience for sure,” he added.

The film was shot with a mix of digital and 16mm, with Diaz shooting part of it in the fire belt in villages covered with ashes right after one of the last eruption.

Films Boutique is also selling “La Morsure” (“Bitten”), the feature debut of Romain de Saint-Blanquat, which world premieres in Locarno’s Cineasti di Presente.

Starring Léonie Dahan-Lamort, Lilith Grasmug, Cyril Metzger, Maxim Rohart and Fred Blin, it is produced by Marc-Benoit Créancier at France’s Easy Tiger Films, behind “Divines” (Houda Benyamina, “Les Magnetiques” (Vincent Cardonna), and “Divertimento” (Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar).

Set in 1967 at Mardi Gras, it turns on Françoise, a 17 year-old boarder at a sm all girls  catholic high school. Convinced that she has only one night left before her death, she sneaks out with her friend Delphine to attend a costume party and live this night  as if it was her last.

“We fell in love with ‘La Morsure’ and the work of Romain. ‘La Morsure’ is a love letter to exploitation/genre cinema by masters Jess Franco and Dario Argento while connecting the dots with the French Nouvelle Vague that took place during the same years,” said Simon.

He added: “The film gives a powerful glimpse of the spirit of ’68 – right before the sexual and political revolution –  through the eyes of two young girls who want to live their life today and can’t wait for tomorrow. It is an exciting debut that should seduce festivals programmers and please distributors looking for new voices and elevated genre cinema.”

On-the-rise French distribution company KMBO, whose releases sold over two million admissions in 2022, will handle theatrical distribution in France.

Broadcasting from the edge of Tornado Alley,

[This story focuses on The Bear season two, episode three “Sundae” but contains some full season spoilers.]

Midway through its second season, The Bear loads the viewer up with an abundance of high-profile actors: Jamie Lee Curtis, Bob Odenkirk and John Mulaney, to name just three. And while the bone-chilling holiday episode (titled “Fishes,” as in “feast of the seven”) rightly warrants more attention than you can throw a fork at, it’s certainly not the season’s first offering featuring familiar faces.

On that front, look no further than three episodes earlier: “Sundae,” The Bear season two’s veritable love letter to the Chicago food scene, from director Joanna Calo, who is also co-showrunner and executive producer. Sure, every episode of The Bear is a love letter to the Chicago food scene. But “Sundae” is the cherry on top of the… well, you know.

Much of the episode centers on Ayo Edebiri’s Sydney Adamu, chef de cuisine at the developing The Bear, as she tours a diverse array of the Windy City’s finest restaurants for inspiration. Over the course of her journey, Syd eats at several real Chicago restaurants — some of them institutions, some of them up-and-comers and one of them fictionalized for the show.

“It was this very cool project of figuring out, ‘Who speaks for Chicago?’” Calo tells The Hollywood Reporter, speaking in her capacity as the episode’s director. “There are so many places we didn’t get to go to, obviously, but we tried to cover all of our bases of what it’s like to eat and be inspired in Chicago.”

In crafting the episode, Calo and company utilized the real restaurant locations and real restauranteurs in speaking roles (such as One Off Hospitality’s Donnie Madia) to not only build on the Hulu drama’s hard-earned authentic portrayal of life as a food professional, but also to honor the city that’s as much a part of The Bear cast as Syd, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and the rest. Below, THR speaks with Calo about directing the episode and how Sydney’s “Sundae” came together.

How did the world’s awareness of The Bear impact the work done on season two?

From the very beginning, as soon as we understood how people felt about the first season, I said, “Well, no one’s going to like the second season because once you have an idea of what you want for the second season, we can’t make all those people happy, so let’s just do whatever we want because we’re going to fail no matter what.” Releasing ourselves from the fear or trying to guess is probably what ultimately helped it feel, even though very different from the first season, really similar to the first season, in that it had an energy that’s all its own.

Part of the energy is leaving the kitchen, and seeing more of everyone’s lives, with episode three as a big example: Sydney’s culinary tour of Chicago. Please tell me Ayo Edebiri didn’t have to eat all of this food in a single day.

Not one day, but she ate a lot and I’m so proud of her (laughs.) It wasn’t easy, but she was always down. It was [shot in about] three days. Because of the way the schedule worked out, we really had to knock out the location work, so she ate a lot of really good food. Luckily, it was really delicious! But it was way too much food.

How did you choose which restaurants to feature in the episode? Does it start with the creative, or the practical realities of where you’re allowed to film?

We were incredibly lucky in that we were able to go where we wanted for the most part. People opened their kitchens to us. And so it really became less about the creative and more about, what are these iconic Chicago places and what are the up-and-coming Chicago places? And that ended up being this really special collaboration of Donnie Madia, who is this amazing figure in Chicago, and in all of the culinary world. People are inspired by [his restaurant] Avec, and the design and menu of Avec. And so starting with Donnie, that also connected us to [the restaurant] Publican. And the writers of the episode went ahead to Chicago before we landed there and spoke to [Publican chef Rob Levitt] and heard some of his stories, and then we wrote them into the script. And then we went and got the real Rob to tell us the story, which is sort of a weird ouroboros. We knew that if we could just get in there and get him talking, we could capture something special. We wanted the audience to have the same experience we were getting to have. Then Kasama was always high on our list because we ate there constantly during the first season. The food that Kasama is doing is special and part of this new wave of Chicago food. The apartment I stayed in for the first season just happened to be literally around the corner, so we ate there every day. We realized it was one of the greatest restaurants in America.

How do these restaurant choices map onto Sydney as a character and what she’s looking to puzzle out for her own ambitions?

Once we realized that we were going to be able to go to all these locations, we started thinking about the menu for The Bear [the restaurant]. Chefs are inspired all the time and it doesn’t end up making it onto the menu. But if we’re trying to tell this really specific story about creativity and how it connects to the project she’s working on, we really wanted to draw a throughline from her ribs dish last season to some dish she would be pitching to make it onto the menu of The Bear. And that’s why we started circling around this ravioli idea. We know we’re getting beef from Publican, and that Avec has an amazing spare ribs and hummus [dish]. Lao Peng You has all of these dumplings that are so good. And then we have the fake French restaurant, Verdana, which we actually shot at Giant, where they have this amazing crepe. We were attempting to tell a story about creative inspiration for an idea and how it can come from all these places, and that Sydney would want to eat all of these different foods and combine them.

[Culinary producer Courtney Storer] said, “This is what she would do.” It’s like a day off for her, which we turned into this need for creative juice. But this was very much originally conceived as “Sydney’s Day Out.” You go to the market, taste the spaces, buy things, eat things. It was interesting to us, that this is commonplace for chefs.

What went into filming at the actual locations?

Jason Sterman and Brian McGinn [from Netflix’s Chef’s Table] came and produced with me. Brian also did some of the B-unit capturing of the kitchens. So we could be doing scenes but then he’s setting up for just beautiful food and beautiful kitchen movements. I will say, we happened to shoot in incredibly kind kitchens. That doesn’t mean they weren’t being extra kind because we were there, but I think Donnie really lives by creed of hospitality and about taking care of the family that is in his restaurant. That that’s part of why we wanted to talk to Rob; even though Publican I think has a similar ethos, he had had some really good horror stories as well about shitty partners and bad behavior and failures, and those are his true stories and we were able to get him to tell those stories on camera and then use them to amp up Sydney’s fear of both her own failure and her fear about her partnership with Carmy.

How about turning these restauranteurs into actors, essentially?

That was fascinating. Again, I had Brian and Jason with me, and this is what they do, so they gave me some good advice. But the truth is, you just have to try to make people feel as comfortable as you can. It’s hard, though. Some people naturally can do it. Claire, one of the GMs at Avec, was a star. She could just completely be herself on camera. There were some other people where it was a little harder for them, and we just tried to give them as much time as we could. The actors on The Bear are so fucking good and charismatic, that we wanted to make sure we showed the very best side of these real people. What I tried to do was give those people who were less comfortable as much time as I could, and surprise them with prompts or say, “I loved that part, say that part again.”

Are you able to compartmentalize The Bear right now while pencils are down for the writers strike, and work can’t move forward on season three?

I really am, and [creator Chris Storer] is too. Taking a break isn’t the worst thing in the world. I hope we can resolve things, especially after such a strong showing from all the writers. It would be wonderful to end this in a powerful way. The writers really deserve to feel like a powerful force to be reckoned with.

Swiss actor, director and photographer Vincent Perez (The Crow: City of Angels, Queen of the Damned, Cyrano de Bergerac) is screening his latest, The Edge of the Blade, a period piece about dueling and honor, in the Horizons section of the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

His fourth feature as a director is set in Paris in 1887, when duels were still common despite being prohibited by law. It premiered at the Munich film festival just a day before screening at the big cinema event in the Czech spa town. Perez also wrote the screenplay with his wife, French actress and screenwriter Karine Silla Perez.

The Edge of the Blade focuses on Clément Lacaze (portrayed by Roschdy Zem), a sword master and teacher at a fencing school whose nephew gets challenged to a duel by the more experienced Colonel Berchère (played by Perez himself). Meanwhile, feminist Marie-Rose Astié de Valsayre (Doria Tillier) fights for women’s rights and social change.

Perez talked to The Hollywood Reporter about why he decided to make a movie about swordplay, how his research saw him dive deep into the history of dueling, the connections between his historical film and modern life and how he approached the dual roles of director and actor.

Why did you want to explore the topic of duels more deeply, and why now?

I’ve always felt that there is a movie missing about that matter, especially in France, because dueling was really part of everyday life for centuries — since the Middle Ages — and it stuck around until the Second World War. And I had that dream to make a film about it. But it took me years to find the right window, and then I kind of forgot about it. Then a friend of mine, Jean Dujardin (The Artist), told me: “Vincent, I have a duel in the film that I’m doing with (Roman) Polanski (in An Officer and A Spy). You should make a film about the duels.” So he reopened that Pandora’s box. And I went back home and started to do research.

I found these incredible documents, a kind of agenda of duels between 1881 and 1889, a list of all the duels that were happening during those years. And it was incredible. It’s like one duel every day. And it shows the reasons why and the people involved and the witnesses’ names, most of it was handwritten. I saw that a name that was coming back all the time: Tavernier, the character played by Guillaume Gallienne in the film. I found out that this Tavernier was very well known at the time for his knowledge of duels, how to organize a duel. So he wrote a book called The Art of the Duel. Everything was in it: all the protocols, how to prepare yourself for a duel, what to eat, what to put on your legs when they are sore, how to choose a good witness, what qualities he has to have, and then 100 ways of training and 100 ways of having a duel with the sword, 100 ways of fighting with pistols because there are 100 ways, and the saber, which was for the military. So I discovered that world. There are no stories in the book, there are no characters in it. But the protocol was very precise.

From there, I started to read the press from that time, I started to look at the stories about duels and I discovered many, many, many. And slowly the characters came about quite naturally. Then I read about the sword masters. They were like the Marvel superheroes at the time. They were like heroes and people were looking at them like that, because they were courageous and had great strength and power.

How about your strong female character, Marie-Rose Astié de Valsayre?

Through my research in the press, I discovered Mary-Rose. She really existed, and I discovered that she was involved in duels and that she created the first female fencing league and that she had someone who was destroying her reputation through Le Petit Journal, a very famous newspaper at the time. He (portrayed in the movie by Damien Bonnard) was always making fun of her, destroying her reputation, saying to everyone in the press that she was crazy and all this. And I was like: oh my god this is so incredible. And then I discovered that she provoked him and challenged him many times to duels and that he refused. So I slowly built up the story with my wife.

It’s a historical film, but during your introduction of it here in Karlovy Vary, you hinted that there are parallels to our time...

When you make a period film, or if you make a film, it has to resonate with our life, today’s life. There are so many topics in the story that resonate. Like the idea of your reputation, or defending your reputation or your dignity. What is the most feared thing in social media? It is to have your reputation destroyed. So this is still there today.

Now, I guess, what we could say is that instead of going into duels with swords, now you hire lawyers, but it’s the same idea. And then once the duel is done, then the problem was solved. And today with the lawyer it’s supposed to be the same thing. So there was some resonance, which I thought was very interesting.

I also wanted to explore that male world, very male-ish and misogynistic. And to confront that there is a woman that really existed at the time and was confronting that world. In fact, she’s the incarnation of modernity in the film.

She seems to have been way ahead of her time.

She was. Even the feminists of that time didn’t like her, because they thought she was crazy to ask for the right to vote, to ask for equal salary, and that she was saying that women should be able to wear pants, which was forbidden at the time. And she wanted to defend her honor, but women at the time couldn’t define their honor, because they didn’t have any honor. Their honor was in the hands of the husband, once they were married, or the brother when they weren’t married.

She was really very modern. She was a composer and writing in the press, and she wanted the right to be a free woman. I’m more drawn to her freedom than her feminist side. That’s what I wanted to portray in the film.

The film industry has often faced criticism for misogyny and sexism. Do you feel there’s been progress in that and in the way women get portrayed and treated?

Obviously, there is a change. I think it’s a good thing, and you have wonderful female directors that I admire, and you see more and more. It’s great.

But I didn’t want to do a feminist film. The idea was really a movie about a very specific time, which is fascinating. I think it’s also an entertaining film. It’s always been important for me to be able to have fun watching the film and feel things, like danger. And I feel that there’s some kind of catharsis at the end of the film, you feel that you went through all those fights, and something is released in you as an audience.

The Edge of the Blade includes various forms of duels, with épées, pistols and sabres on horseback, and in various locations. Which one was the most difficult to film?

They were all very difficult because I wanted them to be realistic. So the actors worked for months in order to get ready, and I needed to go back into training myself because I’m also acting in the film and I did like a lot of duels in cinema. That’s why I made this film — I have done more than 30 duels in films, and some of them are quite well-known duels. So I had that passion for that exercise and just wanted to go a bit further with it because I felt that there was a movie missing about that topic. But the most difficult duel, to tell the truth, was the last one with horses.

Is it difficult to direct yourself?

Well, I took the advice of one of the masters, Patrice Chéreau, who directed me in the film about Queen Margot. He said: “You shouldn’t double yourself. You have to be the same.” That’s what I did. When I went in front of the camera, I was also directing in a certain way.

What can we see from you next? I heard there was a project about Bolero in which your fans may get to see you?

As an actor, yes, with (writer and director) Anne Fontaine. It’s done, and I think it’s going to be a very beautiful film about the making of Bolero by Ravel. And I have something else shooting this summer. So I’m active as an actor but I’m also preparing my next film. It’s too early, but I have a project that I’m working on with Jeremy Thomas, the wonderful British producer, and some other stuff. I love the process of writing. I love waking up and going straight into writing. That is really my favorite moment.

MF Doom’s widow, Jasmine Dumile, has raised concerns about her late husband’s hospital care at an inquest into his death at Wakefield Coroner’s Court, local outlet LeedsLive reports. Doom, who was born Dumile Daniel Thompson in the United Kingdom and moved back to England with his family in 2010, died in Leeds in October 2020 after a severe reaction to a blood pressure medication. He was diagnosed with angioedema, a rare and sudden form of swelling that inhibited his breathing. Medics kept him on a respirator until his death, aged 49, on October 31.

Before his death, MF Doom seemed fit and well but had a number of health conditions including kidney disease, Jasmine Dumile told the inquest. After two doses of a new blood pressure medication, he went to an emergency room with breathing problems and swelling of the throat and tongue. He stayed in what Jasmine Dumile portrayed as a substandard hospital room with a bed and an old metal desk. “I don’t want to say it was an old storage room,” she told the inquest, but “it wasn’t set up.” Medics in the courtroom said it was one of several rooms attached to the emergency department. Doom died during the United Kingdom’s second wave of COVID-19 fatalities, though it is unclear whether bed shortages affected his treatment.

During his stay, Doom’s health suddenly deteriorated, the inquest heard. On October 21, struggling to breathe, he tried to get off his hospital trolley, collapsed, and went into respiratory arrest. Jasmine Dumile’s legal representatives questioned the frequency of welfare check-ups and, in one instance, a two-hour delay in giving medication for his throat swelling. During another sudden downturn, his help buzzer had been placed out of reach, the inquest heard. Jasmine Dumile said, at one point, she received a distress call from her husband and had to call the hospital to inform nurses herself. Due to pandemic restrictions, she was barred from in-person visits until staff turned off the respirator on the day of his death.

The hospital trust said it carried out a “serious incident investigation” after MF Doom’s death and subsequently recommended updates to the hospital’s management of patients with angioedema. The inquest is ongoing.

George Kane’s End-of-the-world clown comedy Apocalypse Clown will be released in cinemas across the UK through Vertigo Releasing on 1st September.

This Irish horror, Apocalypse Clown, tells the tale of a troupe of failed clowns and an ambitious reporter who embark on a chaotic adventure of self-discovery after a mysterious solar event plunges the world into anarchy.

Send In The Clowns – Directed by George Kane – Photo by Ruth Medjber

“…ruthlessly devoted to making audiences laugh.”

“As a fan,” says Director George Kane, “I miss the days of the out-there, joke-packed big-screen comedy and Apocalypse Clown is ruthlessly devoted to making audiences laugh. It’s blessed with a wonderful cast who fully committed to bringing these loveably twisted weirdos to life, and it demands to be seen with a crowd. It’s unhinged, unpredictable, and if it’s not the greatest dystopian Irish clown comedy ever made, it’s definitely Top 5…”

Directed by BAFTA-nominated George Kane (Crashing, Disney’s Wedding Season), Apocalypse Clown was written by Shane O’Brien, James Walmsley, and Demian Fox from the multi-award-winning Irish comedy outfit Dead Cat Bounce.

The film features hilarious performances from David Earl (Brian & Charles, After Life), Natalie Palamides (Nate — A One Man Show), Amy De Bhrún (The Bachelor Weekend), Fionn Foley (Dublin Oldschool), Tadhg Murphy (Brassic) and Ivan Kaye (Gunpowder Milkshake).

A gym instructor from Bristol who was filmed carving his initials into the 2,000-year-old Colosseum has written a letter of apology, claiming he ‘didn’t know it was an old monument’.

Shameless Ivan Dimitrov, 27, was caught red-handed as he scratched his name and that of his girlfriend Hayley Bracey, 33, into a wall at the famous tourist site.

The couple were on the first leg of a three-week European holiday while their house was being renovated, and he was filmed by an outraged American tourist who posted footage online that went viral.

In what officials have described as a ‘surreal’ letter to the mayor of Rome, police and the authorities at the Colosseum, Dimitrov has now apologised for what he did, revealing his ignorance in the process.

He wrote: ‘Aware of the seriousness of the committed act, with these lines, I wish to address my most heartfelt and honest apologies to the Italians and to the whole world for the damage caused to an asset which, in fact, is the heritage of all humanity.

According to the English-speaking man who recorded the footage, the incident happened on June 23

Ivan Dimitrov (pictured), 27, said he only learned of the ‘antiquity’ of the Colosseum after he was caught red-handed carving his and his girlfriend’s names into the monument’s wall

‘I admit with profound embarrassment that only after what regretfully happened did I learn of the antiquity of the monument.

‘The council with dedication, care and sacrifice guards the inestimable historical and artistic value of the Colosseum.’

But one official at Rome city council said: ‘What nonsense and what a surreal letter. What level of education does this man have not to know the significance of the Colosseum?

‘It’s just an attempt to pacify – and if he was so concerned why take almost two weeks to write? Why didn’t he apologise sooner? He must have known what he did as it was all over the world’s media.

‘We intend to pursue this through the judicial system along with the authorities at the Colosseum and hope to see an appropriate punishment when it comes to court.’

He faces a possible fine of up to 15,000 euros and could be jailed for between two and five years when the case comes to court, probably next year. However, he will not be extradited and does not have to attend.

His lawyer Alessandro Maria Tirelli said: ‘I suggested he wrote to the authorities to express his sincere regret for what he did and offer his apologies.

‘He thought he could get away with what he did in Italy, even knowing full well that if caught in England where he lives he would have been severely punished.

‘On the basis of the letter and the words within it we hope to reach a satisfactory conclusion with the Rome prosecutor which will limit the fine and punishment.’

Bulgarian born Dimitrov and his sports nutritionist girlfriend are thought to be back in Bristol.

A passer-by filmed the tourist as he carved the names into the stone walls of the 1,937-year-old building using a set of keys.

Dimitrov can be seen scratching ‘Ivan + Hayley 23’ into one of the bricks on June 23.

In the video, the English-speaking man filming the footage said to the other: 'Are you serious man? That is f***ed up man. Stupid a******e'

Other users were quick to comment, sharing their outrage and speculating that 'Hayley' was the man's girlfriend

The video was shared on Reddit with the caption: ‘A******e tourist carves name in Colosseum in Rome’.

In the video, the English-speaking man filming the footage says: ‘Are you serious, man? That is f***ed up, man. Stupid a******e.’

Reddit users called on the poster to send the video to police so the vandal could be arrested.

In a statement at the time, Italy’s Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, said: ‘I consider it very serious, unworthy and a sign of great incivility that a tourist defaces one of the most famous places in the world, a historical heritage such as the Colosseum, to engrave the name of his fiancée.

‘I hope that whoever made this gesture at the Flavian Amphitheatre will be identified and sanctioned according to our laws.’

Alfonsina Russo, director of the Colosseum, told MailOnline at the time: ‘The Carabinieri police are now tracking down this man and we will see if we can get him.

‘When you get uneducated people at the Colosseum this kind of hooliganism happens and I hope there are no copycats.’

A spokesperson for the Carabinieri paramilitary police in Rome added: ‘We have been informed of this incident and are looking to identity the culprit and when he is caught, he will be punished.’

This is not the first time tourists have been fined for vandalising what is believed to be the world’s largest amphitheatre.

In 2020, an Irish tourist was arrested for allegedly carving his initials into the Colosseum.

The Carabinieri said a 32-year-old man was caught by the Colosseum’s private security and was immediately reported to officers.

The man’s two initials, about 2in high, were said to have been carved with a metal point on a pillar of the first floor in September 2020.

The unnamed man was accused of damaging a historical and artistic landmark.

Fines start at £1,750, while a custodial sentence could be as long as one year in prison.

Archaeologist Federica Rinaldi, who is responsible for the ancient Roman amphitheater, said people who carve their initials into the monument want to ‘appropriate’ it.

She added: ‘The Colosseum, like any monument that represents the history of all of us, must be preserved and handed over to future generations.’

The Colosseum, which is considered to be one of the seven wonders of the modern world, is a World Heritage Site, along with 54 other Italian sites that comprise the city’s historic centre.

In January 2017, the Colosseum was vandalised with black spray paint. The name ‘Balto’ and the word ‘Morte’ (death) were sprayed onto the pillar overnight.

Two Brazilian men who attempted to climb over a gate into the Colosseum on the same day were apprehended by the authorities when they fell 13ft, with one fracturing his hip bone.

CCTV was studied to see if they were responsible for the the graffiti.

Francesco Prosperetti, special superintendent for the Colosseum, said: ‘We worry that this could become a game and people could start competing over it.’

Before they were spotted, the women, 21 and 25, were able to carve a J and an N into a brick wall on the first floor of the west side of the Colosseum.

After carving the 8in-high letters, the women posed together for a selfie.

The women, just two of six million tourists that flock to the Colosseum every year, used a coin to engrave the letters, La Stampa reported.

They are said to have broken away from their tour group – but other tourists saw what had happened and alerted security.

Police charged the women with ‘aggravated damage on building of historical and artistic interest’, according to  La Repubblica.

After they were caught, the women apologised to Piazza Dante police and Captain Lorenzo Iacobone.

They said: ‘We apologise for what we did. We regret it but we did not imagine it was something so serious. We’ll remember for a lifetime.’

According to The Guardian, the section damaged dates back to the 1800s – a key period of restoration.

A spokesman for the Special Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritage of Rome is quoted as saying: ‘It’s not an original wall but it’s nevertheless antique.’

In 2014, a Russian tourist was fined £17,000 for carving the letter ‘K’ into a section of brickwork.

Construction on the Colosseum began sometime between 70 and 72CE and it seated around 50,000 spectators.

They came to watch gladiators in combat with each other and dangerous animals, including lions.

Other tourists have caused chaos in Rome, like in 2018 when two British tourists stripped and posed for photos in a fountain at one of Rome‘s most famous monuments.

One of the Britons can be seen removing his underwear as the two men frolicked in the water at the foot of Altare della Patria in the Italian capital.

Others filmed as the men laughed and jokingly flexed their muscles in front of bemused tourists.

Their antics were captured on camera by a tour guide at the landmark – a monument to war dead that was originally built in honour of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of the unified Italy.

In the footage, two men – reported as being British by local media – are seen posing for photos in the fountain wearing only their briefs.

Several people position themselves by the wall, dipping their feet into the water and taking photos.

One of the men then pulls his underwear down and hides his genitals between his legs to pose naked for photos. Numerous visitors walk past the Britons as they continued to misbehave.

The footage caused outrage on social media. One Italian wrote online: ‘English sons of b*****s, always playing up and attention-seeking.’

Local media said at the time that this was yet another assault on Italy’s heritage.

Earlier this year, Mark Austin, the vice president of data science at AT&T, noticed that some of the company’s developers had started using the ChatGPT chatbot at work. When the developers got stuck, they asked ChatGPT to explain, fix or hone their code.

It seemed to be a game-changer, Mr. Austin said. But since ChatGPT is a publicly available tool, he wondered if it was secure for businesses to use.

So in January, AT&T tried a product from Microsoft called Azure OpenAI Services that lets businesses build their own A.I.-powered chatbots. AT&T used it to create a proprietary A.I. assistant, Ask AT&T, which helps its developers automate their coding process. AT&T’s customer service representatives also began using the chatbot to help summarize their calls, among other tasks.

“Once they realize what it can do, they love it,” Mr. Austin said. Forms that once took hours to complete needed only two minutes with Ask AT&T so employees could focus on more complicated tasks, he said, and developers who used the chatbot increased their productivity by 20 to 50 percent.

AT&T is one of many businesses eager to find ways to tap the power of generative artificial intelligence, the technology that powers chatbots and that has gripped Silicon Valley with excitement in recent months. Generative A.I. can produce its own text, photos and video in response to prompts, capabilities that can help automate tasks such as taking meeting minutes and cut down on paperwork.

To meet this new demand, tech companies are racing to introduce products for businesses that incorporate generative A.I. Over the past three months, Amazon, Box and Cisco have unveiled plans for generative A.I.-powered products that produce code, analyze documents and summarize meetings. Salesforce also recently rolled out generative A.I. products used in sales, marketing and its Slack messaging service, while Oracle announced a new A.I. feature for human resources teams.

These companies are also investing more in A.I. development. In May, Oracle and Salesforce Ventures, the venture capital arm of Salesforce, invested in Cohere, a Toronto start-up focused on generative A.I. for business use. Oracle is also reselling Cohere’s technology.

“I think this is a complete breakthrough in enterprise software,” Aaron Levie, chief executive of Box, said of generative A.I. He called it “this incredibly exciting opportunity where, for the first time ever, you can actually start to understand what’s inside of your data in a way that wasn’t possible before.”

Many of these tech companies are following Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. In January, Microsoft made Azure OpenAI Service available to customers, who can then access OpenAI’s technology to build their own versions of ChatGPT. As of May, the service had 4,500 customers, said John Montgomery, a Microsoft corporate vice president.

For the most part, tech companies are now rolling out four kinds of generative A.I. products for businesses: features and services that generate code for software engineers, create new content such as sales emails and product descriptions for marketing teams, search company data to answer employee questions, and summarize meeting notes and lengthy documents.

“It is going to be a tool that is used by people to accomplish what they are already doing,” said Bern Elliot, a vice president and analyst at the I.T. research and consulting firm Gartner.

But using generative A.I. in workplaces has risks. Chatbots can produce inaccuracies and misinformation, provide inappropriate responses and leak data. A.I. remains largely unregulated.

In response to these issues, tech companies have taken some steps. To prevent data leakage and to enhance security, some have engineered generative A.I. products so they do not keep a customer’s data.

When Salesforce last month introduced AI Cloud, a service with nine generative A.I.-powered products for businesses, the company included a “trust layer” to help mask sensitive corporate information to stop leaks and promised that what users typed into these products would not be used to retrain the underlying A.I. model.

Similarly, Oracle said that customer data would be kept in a secure environment while training its A.I. model and added that it would not be able to see the information.

Salesforce offers AI Cloud starting at $360,000 annually, with the cost rising depending on the amount of usage. Microsoft charges for Azure OpenAI Service based on the version of OpenAI technology that a customer chooses, as well as the amount of usage.

For now, generative A.I. is used mainly in workplace scenarios that carry low risks — instead of highly regulated industries — with a human in the loop, said Beena Ammanath, the executive director of the Deloitte A.I. Institute, a research center of the consulting firm. A recent Gartner survey of 43 companies found that over half the respondents have no internal policy on generative A.I.

“It is not just about being able to use these new tools efficiently, but it is also about preparing your work force for the new kinds of work that might evolve,” Ms. Ammanath said. “There is going to be new skills needed.”

Panasonic Connect, part of the Japanese electronics company Panasonic, began using Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service to make its own chatbot in February. Today, its employees ask the chatbot 5,000 questions a day about everything from drafting emails to writing code.

While Panasonic Connect had expected its engineers to be the main users of the chatbot, other departments — such as legal, accounting and quality assurance — also turned to it to help summarize legal documents, brainstorm solutions to improve product quality and other tasks, said Judah Reynolds, Panasonic Connect’s marketing and communications chief.

“Everyone started using it in ways that we didn’t even foresee ourselves,” he said. “So people are really taking advantage of it.”

EXCLUSIVE: Italian-Senegalese social media personality Khaby Lame is the world’s most followed TikToker, with 161.3 million followers.

This puts him way ahead of U.S. influencers Charli D’Amelio and Bella Poarch who are currently in second and third position with 151 million and 92.6 million followers each.

Lame’s star has been rising since spring 2021 on the back of his silent TikTok vignettes making fun of life-hack videos, or capturing the absurdities of life and, more recently, his comic on-pitch interactions with soccer stars such as Ronaldinho.

Deadline caught up with the 23-year-old star at the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily after he flew down from Rome to world premiere autobiographical short I Am Khabane, skipping sleep having just wrapped jury duty on Italia’s Got Talent overnight.

Lame first gained traction on the back of a 40-second 2021 video in which he unpeeled a banana, made in response to a video of a banana skin being intricately sliced off with a chef’s clever knife.

At the end of his demonstration, Lame holds out his hand palm up and shrugs in what has now become his trademark gesture.

“This person really complicated his life and I wanted to find a way to make it a bit easier,” he explained.

The social media star believes the silent aspect of his work is the bedrock of his success until now.

“The fact it’s not spoken, makes it a universal language. Every kid, every person around the world can see the video and get a laugh, simply by watching the images,” he said.

Lame originally threw himself into making TikTok content after being laid off from his factory job in the early days of the Covid pandemic.

His rags-to-riches tale is reminiscent of the journeys of the original silent movie stars Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, although Lame says he has not taken inspiration from their work.

“I’m trying to be myself. These are legends, who have made their own story. Every person is a person in their own way, with their own dreams and I just want to be Khaby Lame,” he said.

Short film I Am Khabane explores Lame’s early life, his TikTok beginnings and also follows his trip to L.A. to attend this year’s Oscars.

Co-written and directed with friend and collaborator Adriano Spadaro, I Am Khabane marks a departure for Lame as his first longer-format, scripted film and also because he speaks, and mainly in English.

“Over the course of a few minutes we told an entire life until now… it means a lot to me,” he said. “Some things can be conveyed without words, but I wanted to tell my story and I couldn’t do that only with gestures,” he said.

Having moved to Italy when he was just one year old with his Senegalese parents, Lame grew up in a social housing complex in the town of Chivasso, on the edge of the northern industrial city of Turin.

He recalls his childhood with fondness even though he struggled at school due to dyslexia and dyscalculia, with his parents sending him to a Quranic school in Dakar for a time.

Lame says he has always considered himself to be Italian even if he was only officially granted nationality in August 2022, on the back of his success.

Today, alongside his TikTok following and Italia’s Got Talent jury role, Lame has another 80 million Instagram followers as well as a multi-year partnership deal with fashion brand Hugo Boss and a raft of other media tie-ins.

Lame’s life story and message of never giving up on dreams has also spurred his popularity among youngsters at home, with teenage fans staking out a press conference in Taormina in the hope of connecting with the star.

He regards the short work as a next step in his long-term goal to make films.

“I want to make films. This is my main objective. I’ve wanted to make movies since I was a child,” he said. “To convey emotions through my acting and getting people to believe in something.”

Lame is aiming high after his trip to the Oscars where admits to being overwhelmed by being in the same room as so many “myths.”

“I was like wow, one day I want to be on the stage at the Oscars,” he said.

Quizzed on Hollywood inspirations, Lame points to Will Smith and his 2006 film The Pursuit of Happyness.

“That film teaches a lesson about perseverance in the face of adversity, and it helped me a lot,” said Lame.

Shakira has one word for you: “no.” The pop star, who is rumored to have denied Tom Cruise’s romantic advances this summer, attended the Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2023/2024 show as part of Paris Fashion Week on Wednesday, July 5, wearing a top that could be a rather loud message to the Mission: Impossible star himself Or her ex. Or men in general. Or me! Who knows.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer wore a white, midi-length belted trench coat with the word “NO” sewn onto the bodice in oversize, three-dimensional letters. The coat has gold zipper trim that creates a graphic look.

Shakira styled the statement piece with gold strappy heels, brown aviator sunglasses, and a gold handbag. She wore her hair down in a sleek and straight style with a middle part. For makeup, she went for a classic minimal summer look with a matte pink lip.

“NO” -Shakira, 2023

Rumors that Cruise was interested in pursuing Shakira romantically circled in May after the two were seen hanging out at Formula 1 in Miami. “He is extremely interested in pursuing her,” a source told Page Six. A report in Heat Magazine alleged that Cruise was “absolutely mesmerized” by Shakira, who was “begging” him to stop flirting with her. US Weekly later reported that Shakira had seen the dating rumors, and thought they were funny. “Shakira has seen the online rumors that Tom has been courting her—and how fans are chiming in with their opinions—but she thinks it’s hilarious because it’s just not true,” the source said. “She had a fun time when they chatted, but that’s as far as things have gone.” Shakira separated from her partner of ten years, Gerard Piqué, in 2022.

Back to more important, real things: Camila Cabello was also at the Viktor & Rolf show, and was seated next to Shakira in the front row. Cabello wore a black mini dress made of multiple lace fabrics with extremely puffy sleeves, as is the Viktor & Rolf way. A seating arrangement coincidence, or a hint at a possible collab? Shakira has one word for you: “no.”

If you weren’t a teenager in 1984, it might be hard to understand this, but here goes: There are Gen X-ers who remember where they were the first time they saw the video for the Wham! clap-along pop anthem “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”

In it, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, the heartthrob frontmen of Wham!, wear big smiles and beachy short shorts as they perform their infectious bop — titled after a note Ridgeley had once left on his family’s refrigerator — for a small crowd of adoring fans. There were fingerless gloves, neon face paint, white “Choose Life” T-shirts that had nothing to do with abortion: It was a new-wave dance party for cool kids who thought Mötley Crüe sucked.

Ridgeley, who turned 60 in January, remembers making it as great fun.

“It was our first video with an audience,” he said during a recent video interview from his home in London. “The atmosphere was really quite excitable and exciting.”

Ridgeley and his bandmate are the subject of “Wham!,” a new documentary that premieres on Wednesday on Netflix. Directed by Chris Smith, it charts the British group’s climb to pop stardom, beginning with its ferocious appearance on the music show “Top of the Pops” in 1982, through the global success that followed the albums “Fantastic” (1983) and “Make It Big” (1984), and finishing with the 1986 farewell concert in London.

The film, which is itself directed like a power-pop video, explains how the duo’s modern mix of disco, funk, pop and soul, in songs like “Young Guns (Go for It),” “Careless Whisper” and “Freedom,” helped make Wham! one of the biggest pop groups of the late 20th century, even though it lasted just four years. Unlike bands that split over artistic or personal disagreements, Wham! didn’t have a rise and fall. “It was just a rise and they called it a day,” Smith said.

They didn’t break up either, said Ridgeley, but rather “brought Wham! to a close in a manner of our own choosing.”

Fans might be disappointed to learn that in the documentary Ridgeley is heard but not seen as he appears today: debonair and patrician, with silver hair and a still-cheeky smile. Smith said it would have thrown the film’s mythic aspirations off balance if Ridgeley were on camera but not Michael, who died seven years ago at 53.

After Wham!, Ridgeley told me, he and Michael were “no longer living in each other’s pockets” as they had done since they were kids. But their bond was fixed.

If Ridgeley is tired of being known mostly for his friendship with Michael, he didn’t show it. He brightened when chatting about Michael, whose loss left Ridgeley feeling “like the sky had fallen in,” as he said in 2017. But he didn’t seem into talking much about his life now, other than to say he enjoyed cycling.

The documentary includes archival media coverage and tons of concert footage, including scenes of groundbreaking shows in 1985, when Wham! became the first Western pop group to perform in China.

But it’s Ridgeley’s mother who supplied the most personal treasures. Since her son’s grade-school days making music with Michael, she kept about 50 meticulously organized scrapbooks stuffed with photos, reviews and other ephemera. They include snapshots from the mid-1970s when Ridgeley first got to know Michael as Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, the son of a Cypriot father and a British mother.

Ridgeley was also the son of an immigrant father — his dad was Egyptian — and a British mother, and he hit it off immediately with the boy he called Yog, a nickname he used often in our interview. The scrapbooks paint a vivid portrait of boys who loved Queen and “Saturday Night Fever” and desired to make music a career.

“The only thing I ever wanted to do from the age of 14 was to be in a band, write songs and perform,” Ridgeley said with a 14-year-old’s enthusiasm in his voice, adding that fame and celebrity “were never a motivating factor for either of us.”

Ridgeley said he and Michael knew Wham! would have a finite life span because Michael’s songwriting began “developing and evolving in a way and at a speed” that Wham! couldn’t accommodate. In November, Michael will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Since Wham!’s heyday, Ridgeley has battled the perception that he’s famous only because he was in a duo with a more talented artist. The documentary makes a case in his favor though, tracing how Ridgeley, a guitarist, collaborated with the composer and performer Michael.

Still, Ridgeley acknowledged that his musicianship wasn’t in the same league as Michael’s, “one of the finest, if not the finest, singing voices of his generation,” he said, sounding like a proud brother.

When Michael came out to him after they filmed the video for “Club Tropicana” (1983), 15 years before he did so publicly, Ridgeley said he supported him with love and a shrug. Michael was more freaked out by how his father might react than how the public would, Ridgeley said; had Michael come out during the Wham! years, Ridgeley said he and fans would have had his back.

“I didn’t think it was going to affect our success, and in the long term it probably wouldn’t,” he said. “It would have been difficult for a while for him, there’s no doubt about that. It would have required management by us all. But after the initial sensationalism, it’s on the table isn’t it?”

After Wham!, Ridgeley released a 1990 solo album that flatlined and he did a short stint as a Formula 3 driver, but he has otherwise stayed out of the limelight. The British tabloids have kept breathless tabs on his love life — including his 25-year relationship with Keren Woodward, a former member of another ’80s pop group, Bananarama — much as they did when they gave him the Wham!-era nickname Randy Andy.

Ridgeley didn’t pursue fame further because being in Wham! gave him “everything he wanted,” said Shirlie Kemp, a friend from school and a Wham! backup singer. Not just professionally.

“I don’t think I ever met anyone else who was on par with George the way Andrew was, intellectually and with a sense of humor,” said Kemp, whose husband is Martin Kemp of the ’80s band Spandau Ballet. “It was the best relationship I’d ever seen George have with anyone.”

Ridgeley said “few stones remain unturned” as he’s worked the past five years on projects that are all-things-Wham! In 2019, he published a memoir, “Wham! George Michael & Me,” and had a cameo that year in the romantic-comedy “Last Christmas,” which was inspired by the group’s eponymous chart-topping holiday single. Later this month comes “Echoes From the Edge of Heaven,” a Wham! singles collection.

He still seems to be in awe of what he and his best friend made together.

“I could never quite really get that we had achieved the same kind of success as the artists that we revered like gods when we were growing up,” he said. “We were playing Wembley Stadium, the same place Elton John played. You can say, ‘I am the same.’ But in your own mind, you’re never the same.”

Miles Morales’ take on the Prowler was highlighted in a previously unreleased scene from Sony Pictures’ latest hit, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Verse 2‘s crazy twist ending left fans shocked as Shameik Moore’s Spider-Man/Mile Morales found himself face to face with a Multiversal Variant of himself – one who became the Prowler in his universe with no web-slinger to protect that world.

And while this moment was one of nearly a dozen huge spoilers that drove this sequel to be one of the most successful films of the year, it sets the stage for fans to learn about an entirely new version of somebody already known and loved.

Prowler Miles Shines in Spider-Verse 2 Concept Video

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse director Kemp Powers shared a previously unreleased 74-second animation test exploring Miles G. Morales’ journey towards becoming the Prowler on Earth-42.

Sony Pictures

Powers explained that this sequence would have shown Miles going through training with the original Prowler, his uncle Aaron Davis, before the events of Spider-Verse 2:

“A 2020 movement test of Miles G. (boards by the amazing Wynton Redmond and Spencer Wan and anim by Nick Kondo) explores how he would’ve been trained by his Uncle Aaron (the original Prowler) before the events of the film. We called the character ‘Wiles’ back then.”

Will Prowler’s Origins Be Shown in Spider-Verse 3?

While this sequence most likely won’t be shown in this exact form in 2024’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, fans can certainly expect to see this new version of the Prowler get a more in-depth origin story told.

Kemp Powers has already teased that this new take on Miles Morales is “such an exciting character” and that it takes “such a visual departure” from everything that’s been seen in the first two Spider-Verse movies thus far:

“It was such an exciting character, it was actually hard for us to keep it a secret. Oh, man, the design is so different, it’s such a visual departure. And to explore how Miles might have developed if he were in a different world where he didn’t have his father, he was mentored by his uncle, what kind of kid would he be? For people who see Miles G. Morales at the end, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. There’s a lot to learn about that character. It’s a very, very interesting character.”

There were even a few rejected designs for the Prowler that didn’t make it to the final cut of Spider-Verse 2‘s final scene, although Sony is now working hard to develop the next steps in this character’s journey.

WB has announced its latest venture into the realm of audio dramas with The Flash: Escape The Midnight Circus, coming exclusively to Apple Podcasts this month.

This scripted audio drama will star Max Greenfield (New Girl) as Barry Allen/The Flash, in a six-part podcast exclusively on Apple Podcasts.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment describes the podcast as a “companion piece” to the film currently in theaters, though it’s unclear if that means it’s in the same canon of the film or not.

The first two parts will be released on Monday, July 10th, with the remaining episodes dropping weekly on Mondays. The studio says the series will be exclusive to Apple Podcasts “for a limited time” before branching out to other podcast platforms.

Check out the trailer and the full synopsis below:

Barry Allen is at the height of his powers and fame, firmly ensconced as Central City’s favorite Super Hero – but when being The Flash forces him to let Iris down one time too many, she decides to call it quits. Undeterred, Barry figures he can use the Speed Force to go back in time and set things right. But something goes wrong, Barry tumbles into a new dimension, finding himself in a small bedroom with Captain Cold, his powers gone. Cold tells Barry that he’s an unwitting participant in a televised tournament, THE MIDNIGHT CIRCUS, which pits humans, superheroes and rogues against one another in life-or-death games of chance. Survive the competition and Barry earns his freedom, recreate the conditions of his original transformation, and return to his own timeline. But to do so, he’ll have to rely solely on his wits. And if that wasn’t hard enough, he soon finds himself facing his toughest opponent yet: Iris West.

Genshin Impact is raising their fisticuffs alright, because not only did they release drip marketing of the characters that will be featured in 4.0, but they also decided to divulge and confirm a majority of the Fontaine cast in their latest video, “The Final Feast.” This short artistic preview is where we get to see many of Fontaine’s characters in their natural habitats along being in motion with crumbs of lore being sprinkled throughout. Not only that, but they decided to reveal the final canon appearance of Arlecchino, “The Knave” of the Harbingers.

Breaking Down the Overture Teaser and Characters in Genshin Impact’s, “The Final Feast”

This Overture Teaser drops a lot of characters we’ll be seeing in the Fontaine story, all over the place from the Magician’s show to the Court so please refer to the gallery of images to get a sense of who we’re working with. Right from the get-go, we got Freminet falling through a vast and open space of water before seemingly drowning, transitioning to Lynette and Lyney putting on a mock performance.

Our next set of characters is Charlotte and Taylor Swift–I mean, Navia practicing grabbing attractive photos for what we can presume is the magician’s show since Navia is attempting to get an image of her flying with the umbrella. Though I don’t think she meant to fly off that far… Afterward, we switch to Wriothesley being served some tea from a tiny little girl, Sigewinne, who tries to serve him something swimming in strange ingredients. Guess not everyone can be Diona and make killer drinks from junk.

We then see two intimidating figures, one of which is the judge of Fontaine, Neuvillette, and a guard of sorts, Clorinde. Who shoots the screen and attacks Taylor Swift–sorry, Navia. Right as she explodes into a bunch of confetti, we are then presented with the conclusion of Lyney’s and Lynette’s performance only to be applauded by Arlecchino who tosses the two only to reveal they are cardboard. Last we see, Furina and Neuvillette in a large, empty but golden courtroom with a giant scale evenly balanced in the midst of the room.

Exploring the Themes of “The Final Feast” Overture Teaser and What to Expect From Fontaine

A big theme we see throughout this teaser is that not everything is as it seems. What we see might not actually be the truth and going into Fontaine, while it may look like a pristine area, we have seen hints that there are some rather run-down areas just beneath the surface. What we may have is another utopia vs the dystopia it is sucking dry to fill its needs.

We are likely to see a lot of what is beautiful and wholesome, clean and magical while trying to uncover the truth behind the corrupt government and courtroom that falls to the whim of a frivolous Judge or Archon. Arlecchino’s role may either to be deceive the court through their magician’s show or hint that the control of Fontaine is already in her control and we, as the Traveler, are falling into her trap.

What may seem beautiful, clean, and magical on the outside may be hiding something deceptively built on the backs of other people, squashing down a part of society to see another thrive. And I’m not optimistic, I do believe we are going to jail. They even had the bars on the window during Neuvillette’s and Clorinde’s appearance so they will probably be the ones to decide that and see us jailed.

These are all theories, however, because I am way too excited for the release of Fontaine to hide my thought process. I look forward to our new cast of characters, they are quite beautiful and inspired as well as our newest Harbinger’s debut. However, terrifying it may come to be…

Genshin Impact is raising their fisticuffs alright,

The landscape of the entertainment industry is constantly evolving, and with it has come a new generation of actors who are challenging norms, pushing boundaries and demanding more authentic and inclusive representation onscreen. On June 20 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, SAGindie Executive Director Darrien Gipson moderated a Film Independent roundtable with seven up-and-coming performers currently reshaping how we see ourselves in film and TV: Annie Gonzalez, Isis King, Lionel Boyce, Sue Ann Pien, Lukita Maxwell, Young Mazino and Josie Totah.

The group was celebrated together as Film Independent’s 2023 New Wave Actors honorees—performers who have emerged in the industry and continue to deliver stellar performances and carve out new space for representation in popular media. Watch the full panel below and keep reading for more highlights from the conversation…

Gipson began by asking, “If you’re a creative BIPOC person today, do you have to be an activist too?” Annie Gonzalez (Flamin’ Hot, Gente-fied) immediately answered: “Being a brown person on screen is a radical act,” making activism a necessary part of her journey. Meanwhile, Isis King (With Love, When They See Us) acknowledged the exhaustion that comes with being a longtime advocate for trans rights. Breaking away from tragic narratives is crucial, she said, as transgender people deserve representation that reflects the full scope of their lives. “You shouldn’t have to do [that],” she said, “I should be able to live, share my story, share my art.”

Sue Ann Pien (As We See It) shared what it’s like to be on the autism spectrum and the bravery it takes to be out—and outspoken—about it. “Is this a bad thing to be out about? Because that was also a fear,” she explained. “There’s a lot of stigma [around autism] to be so forward and outspoken about something… And then there’s another sense of Well, why is there no differences on TV? Why do people who look like me not understand that they are autistic?” Pien emphasized the need for more creative diversity and highlighted the significance of having individuals from marginalized communities in positions of power within the industry. “If anyone is going to speak the truth, why not us?” added Gipson.

“Not everyone in the room is going to have the same truth, so you can’t just speak to just one,” said Gipson, directing the conversation back to Gonzalez. “I loved the dynamic of your show and the family unit. You’ve dealt with issues, but that wasn’t [at the core of the show].” Gonzalez agreed, adding that it was a result of having people who are the face of the story also telling the story to add to the authenticity of the world. “The more we have brown writers, trans writers, Asian director etc. at the top, the easier it is for all of us to do our job,” she said.

Gipson turned to Lionel Boyce, commenting about his gentle touch on The Bear, asking how he developed his character for the FX hit. Boyce said he went to study as an intern at a couple of fine dining restaurants to help him further his understanding of the milieu. “It was a bakery and I would talk to the bakers—it’s where [cooks] go to retire from kitchen. It’s the intensity and urgency of working in the kitchen without the chaos and mayhem of cursing each other out. So I think realizing that, it allowed me to say, Okay, this character’s kind of living in his own space in this world. Every time you step over here it feels like an exhale, instead of adding to the chaos,” he said. Gipson then asked Boyce if he’d picked up any baking skills. “I had to so I looked like I knew what I was doing!” he laughed.

Gipson praised King for her  portrayal of Sol Perez on Amazon’s With Love. Appreciative, King began to discuss the process it took for us to see the character onscreen. “I want to go back to getting the role, you know, being a trans person. I’ve never seen the character description [of a trans person] be that they are heart of the family, warm, kind, hardworking—all of these things that I feel like I am. For a trans person, especially a Black or Brown trans person, that’s not ever the description. So to see that and to kind of know that the character is grounded in the heart that I feel like I already have, that’s not ever anything I ever see.” Gloria Calderón Kellett, the showrunner of With Love, was present at this conversation. King praised Kellett for knowing queer writers were necessary to create a fuller story. “Gloria knew that it was important to have queer writers. One of the writers is nonbinary and they help write the character, which goes back to everything everyone said. To pick up some of the little nuances of the trans person was so important.”

“How did you go about expressing to industry when you transitioned?” Gipson asked Glee alum Josie Totah. “How did you go about [it] and what made what could have made it easier?” Totah responded: “I just got into this industry like a lot of kids do, by it being just something that’s a fun thing to do and activity that obviously comes with a lot of privilege, to be able to have family that are willing to support that activity and you know move me to LA when I booked my first show and I was, like, 10-years-old. And then it became like a job, which I didn’t really realize. But I kept booking like these roles and then I sort of found myself like cornering this market of like, the little gay boy.”

Totah explained that having the industry forcing this “little gay boy” narrative onto her at this was difficult to navigate. She spoke about the damaging effect of the industry in rewriting the identities of people who are ever-evolving and therefore can not always fit into the same box. “How am I expected to live my truth with that incongruence and that cognitive dissonance that existed for several years? And I think when my show on NBC got canceled, that I’d done in high school, I was obviously devastated. But I was also sort of relieved. I describe it as like the water sort of boiling over and that was the opportunity for me to finally step into my truth.”

These revelations continued through the night. Young Mazino, who can be seen in Netflix’s Beef, shared his transition from music to acting and how it differed from what he was used to; “I think for music, it’s developed into something that’s more private for me. It’s something I do to individually express any feeling or emotion or energy. But for acting, it’s something more to be shared. It’s a very collaborative experience, especially in film,” he said. Even through the exhaustion of press and being on set, he finds gratitude for where he is in his life and newfound career path. “I think I’m blessed to be here. Acting has always been like a spirit or entity—I think she’s this divine, feminine spirit that seems to just carry me through all kinds of situations throughout my life, whether or not I was aware she was watching over me.”

“Obviously, Jason Segal is the lead character of Apple+’s Shrinking, but if he’s the earth, you’re the sun in that show,” said Gipson to Lukita Maxwell. Gipson continues to talk about how every relationship on the show revolves around Maxwell’s character. She asked how Maxwell was able to relate to each member of the high-profile ensemble cast.

“I was really fortunate to work with this insane ensemble that have these beautiful, vibrant careers and I just felt like every day on set was a lesson and I learned so much. It’s Jason Siegel and Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams. The first day on set, I feel like I came on to set with a blind confidence. I kind of dissociated from the fact that I was doing the show,” Maxwell said. “But then Jason and Krista and Harrison Ford are there, and I got so nervous before starting my first scene. I’d met Jason a couple of times before, so I felt a little bit more comfortable. Everybody left the room on the first day and it was just me and Jason. I turned to him and I was like, dude, I’m so anxious. He made me sit down and he said, hey kid, you don’t have anything to prove here. Your only job is to work hard and focus on the work. Having that little nugget of advice going into this crazy ensemble was my anchor.” Finding this anchor helped Maxwell ground herself into her character, making her even more charming and lovable.

Gipson ended the evening by asking each member of the panel what would they’d like to see being created content-wise, as well as what they’d want the creators of said content to understand. “I say this with the most groundedness,” said Gonzalez, “I’m so good at what I do in so many different facets. I sing, I dance, I act. And for so long, so many people would tell me, I don’t know where to put you because you’re a little Mexican girl from East LA. But my talent can’t be boxed into that. It’s not an accent. It’s not the way we do our makeup, even though that’s important. I would love to exist in a rom-com that’s not [explicitly labeled] a Latinx project.”

Boyce chimed in by urging the industry to greenlight more unfamiliar, weirdly specific stories. “When you hire those people to make something, they’re going to hire people outside of the six same people. I’m looking for something interesting.” King went on to reiterate that the trans community is not a monolith, and that every trans person has different experiences. “We transition different. We have different perspectives.” She added one more thing: “And also book me, that’s the main thing. Like, book me. That’s what I want them to know.”

Insidious started off as a subversive domestic horror that spawned James Wan’s second horror franchise after the success of Saw. The original movie interrogated the idea of haunted house horrors and instead drew on whether it is the family in the house responsible for the hauntings rather than the house itself. Following the success of the first two movies, directed by Wan, the franchise expanded with two prequels.

Five years after the fourth movie, the franchise’s fifth installment Insidious: The Red Door will be released this week, revisiting the Lambert family, ten years after the events of the first movie. Thirteen years of a franchise is hard to keep track of, so here’s a rundown of what you’ve forgotten, missed, or never got around to watching.

Warning, dear reader, for there are spoilers aplenty ahead.

Insidious (2010)

The movie begins with the Lambert family—Josh (Patrick Wilson), Renai (Rose Byrne), and their three children, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), Foster (Andrew Astor), and Calli—moving into their new house. While exploring the attic of their new house, Dalton falls from a ladder. Josh and Renai find him uninjured, but Dalton doesn’t wake up the next morning. At the hospital, doctors confirm he is in a coma. However, they can’t explain why. Fast forward three months and Dalton, still comatose, returns home. His return initiates horrific events, culminating in Renai being attacked by a demonic entity. Thinking there’s something wrong with the house, they move.

But the new house doesn’t stop the demons. When Josh’s mother Lorraine (Barbara Hershey) visits, she witnesses an apparition pointing its claws at Dalton. Lorraine confirms that Josh had a similar experience when he was a child and recommends calling psychic Elise Rainer (icon Lin Shaye). Elise arrives with her assistants Specs (Leigh Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson) who confirm there are dark entities in the Lambert house. Elise reveals Dalton is an astral projector and has gotten himself lost in The Further, a dark realm filled with tortured souls of the dead. Basically, it’s a place not meant for the living. Taking advantage of Dalton being lost, these tortured souls try to harness his vessel for the chance to live again.

Elise insists they need to go to The Further to find Dalton. Lorraine and Elise reveal to Josh how he has the same ability as Dalton, which was suppressed by Elise after the entity of ‘the bride in black’ would not leave him alone. Josh agrees to unlock his childhood memories and ability to find Dalton. In the Further, he’s able to find Dalton, but he’s chained up by the demon ‘with fire on his face’.

They manage to get away but other dead entities swarm their home, slowing Josh and Dalton’s return. When they finally return to their bodies, the entities fade and all seems well, but when no one else is around, Elise sees that the ‘bride in black’ has taken over Josh’s body. Realising Elise’s discovery ‘the bride in black’ kills Elise.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

The sequel takes us back to 1986 when Lorraine is concerned about her son after noticing a veiled entity following him whenever she takes his photo. Elise Rainer is called in to help on the recommendation of Carl (Steve Coulter), another paranormal investigator.

Returning to the present, the movie directly follows the events of Chapter 1. After being investigated by the police following Elise’s death, the Lamberts stay at Josh’s childhood home. Renai suspects the entities are still present inside Josh. Lorraine also suspects the entities have not completely left the Lamberts and seeks out help in Specs and Tucker.

Specs and Tucker call in Carl to summon Elise for answers, they discern the answer to Elise’s murder lies in a hospital where Lorraine used to work. There, in the ICU, it’s determined that ‘the bride in black’ who has taken over Josh’s body and killed Elise is Parker Crane. Then they learn they have not been communicating with Elise, but the mother of Parker Crane who has been manifesting in the Lambert house.

At the Lambert house, entities return to mess with Renai, including Crane’s mother. Lorraine takes Renai from the house so Carl, Specs, and Tucker can investigate Josh. The entity attacks Carl, who ends up in the Further with the real Josh. To find answers, the pair seek out Elise in the Further. After finding her, they learn Parker Crane’s mother is responsible for his vengeful haunting, so they destroy his mother’s ghost and Crane along with her.

Carl and Josh end up in young Josh’s world trying to find his way back to the living. Carl and Josh escape the Further with Dalton’s help leading them home. In a bid to keep the entities away from them, Carl removes Josh and Dalton’s ability to astral project. Specs and Tucker are guided by Elise as they help people others bothered by the paranormal.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

The first of the franchise’s two prequels, Insidious: Chapter 3 follows the story of Quinn Brenner, who seeks the help of Elise Rainier to communicate with her deceased mother. Her previous attempts to communicate with the dead, however, caused her to unintentionally contact a malevolent spirit who proceeds to haunt her.

After the entity causes her to be hit by a car and breaks both of her legs, the effects of the haunting worsen. The entity attacks her relentlessly, and once Quinn’s father concedes something is happening, he seeks out Elise for help. Reluctant, Elise agrees to help Quinn, but warns how she has grown fearful of her ability, as a veiled woman from the Further (the same one who stalked Josh) intent on killing her.

In an attempt to figure out who is contacting Quinn, they perform a séance and discover it is the entity of a man ‘who can’t breathe’, contacting Quinn, not her mother. But while inside the further, the veiled woman comes for Elise, leading her to panic and say she can no longer help. At a loss, Quinn’s brother suggests they call in web series paranormal investigators, Specs and Tucker. The haunting escalates, with the entity using Quinn’s physical body as a vessel to enter the living world and attack them. The entity tries to force Quinn to kill herself, but her father restrains her in time.

Elise returns after being haunted herself by the ‘man who can’t breathe’, and although Tucker and Spec claim this haunting is out of their league, Elise insists they stay to help. Performing another séance to delve into the Further, Elise manages to find Quinn, and with the help of Quinn’s mother, they destroy the evil entity. Quinn returns to her body.

Insidious: The Last Key

In the second prequel before Insidious, we learn of Elise’s childhood, and how her family handled her abilities. When Elise’s brother is afraid of the things Elise sees, he uses a whistle to call her mother. After claiming to have seen a ghost, Elise’s father punishes her by locking her in a dark room. She escapes with the help of a demon who has keys for nails, and the demon then kills her mother.

Back in the present, Elise receives a call from someone needing help to combat entities at her childhood home. Arriving at the house with Specs and Tucker, the owner, Ted Garza shows them the room where most of the encounters have happened. It is Elise’s childhood bedroom which has hardly changed. When she investigates the room alone, she encounters a ghost she had seen as a child.

The next day, she sees her brother, Christian, and her nieces, Imogen and Melissa for the first time since she left. Back at the house, an entity has taken her brother’s old whistle and leads her to a room where a young woman had been chained up and kidnapped by Ted Garza. Garza is killed and his victim is freed.

After learning the whistle he lost as a child is still at the house, Christian and his daughters search for it. An entity lures Melissa into the basement where she is attacked by the demon with keys for nails. Elise has a vision of her niece being attacked and rushes to the house, in time to get Melissa to the hospital. However, Elise claims Melissa’s soul is trapped in the Further.

Elise discovers suitcases filled with bones and clothes. She discovers that, like Garza, her father had kidnapped and killed many women in the basement over the years. That includes the ghost from her childhood (who was actually alive when Elise first saw her). While searching the suitcases, the key demon appears and drags Elise into the Further.

Imogen goes into the Further to find her. A ghost of one of the victims leads Imogen to a red door. Beyond it, there is a hallway of cells, filled with people and souls kept by the demon with keys for nails. Imogen finds Elise just as the demon has encouraged her to take vengeance on her father. Elise stops, refusing to feed the demon with more hatred. The demon attacks Melissa and Imogen. Imogen tosses Elise Christian’s whistle, she blows it and the ghost of Elise’s mother comes and fights off the demon, freeing them all. They all return safely from the Further.

The next night, Elise dreams of Dalton, and receives the phone call from Lorraine, which leads the franchise back to the original movie.

The four movies have been leading up to the final installment in Insidious: The Red Door which arrives exclusively in theaters on July 7. We’ve been waiting for all the answers about the red doors for a long time, so maybe we’ll get all the answers back with the Lamberts.

Insidious started off as a subversive domestic

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’s Eastern Promises industry strand has unveiled the winners of it’s project showcases, which took place at the fest from July 2-4.

This year’s edition presented 27 film projects that were screened across the festival’s three established programs: Works in Progress, Works in Development – Feature Launch, and First Cut+, competing for awards with a total value of 115,000 EUR.

In the Works in Progress sidebar, the post-production development prize went to filmmaker Klára Tasovská for her feature I Am Not Everything I Want to Be. The pic is produced by Lukáš Kokeš. The award consists of post-production services in UPP and Soundsquare.

Discussing the pic, the jury, featuring Esra Demirkiran, Festival Coordinator, TRT Sinema, Petr Tichý, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Barrandov Studio, Oscar Alonso, Festival Manager, Latido Films, Nadia Ben Rachid, Film Editor, and Agustina Chiarino, Producer, Bocacha Films, said the project was “exciting” and “all the story elements from the past resonate today and can definitely inspire everyone.”

The Works in Development award went to Egle Vertelyte for the feature Tasty (Lithuania, Estonia). The pic was produced by Lukas Trimonis. A cash prize of 5,000 EUR, sponsored by TRT Sinema, will be awarded to the project.

The jury said of the project: “For conveying in a culinary comedy a critical approach to today’s world, which praises the exaggerated packaging in daily life and social media, and presenting true friendship as the most delicious dish.”

Bikechess (Kazakhstan, France, Norway), directed by Assel Aushakimova and produced by Antoine Simkine, Almagul Tleukhanova, and Christian Fredrik Martin won the Works in Progress Karlovy Vary IFF Award. The project will receive a cash prize of 5,000 EUR, sponsored by Barrandov Studio.

The Works in Development Award — Feature Length, sponsored by MIDPOINT, Barrandov Studio, and KVIFF, was awarded to Flight from Kabul (Slovakia), directed and written by Sahraa Karimi and produced by Wanda Adamík Hrycová. The filmmakers will be handed 10,000 EUR cash prize for further development.

Discussing the pic, the jury, featuring Danijel Hočevar, Producer at Vertigo, Producer Mentor at MIDPOINT Feature Launch, Joseph Fahim, Film Critic, Programmer, Lecturer, Simone Baumann, Producer, Managing Director of German Films, said the film had a “bold vision, political audaciousness, and enterprising storytelling.”

“The Works in Development Award goes to a project that explores a people and place seldom seen on screen; ones that have been let down by Western politicians who stood idle as the powers of darkness ventured to ravage it in front of the apathetic, complacent eyes of the world,” the jury said.

In the same section, the Connecting Cottbus Award was won by Excavators (Cyprus), directed and written by Argyro Nicolaou and produced by Constantinos Nikiforou and Minos Papas. The project will be granted the opportunity to pitch at Connecting Cottbus, the East-West co-production market during the Film Festival Cottbus.

Allen Sunshine (Canada, USA), directed by Harley Chamandy and produced by Chantal Chamandy, picked up the First Cut+ award. The filmmakers will receive a 5,000 EUR cash prize from TRT Sinema. The Rotterdam Lab Award was picked up by Tomáš Pertold, producer of the film God Break Down the Door (Czech Republic). As part of the award, Pertold will participate in the Rotterdam Lab professional training program for producers, which takes place during the International Film Festival Rotterdam

Class won’t be in session for much longer on Netflix’s Sex Education.

The series will end with Season 4, which is set for September 21, the streamer announced on Wednesday.

In a teaser for the new season, which was also released on Wednesday, Asa Butterfield’s Otis Milburn doesn’t appear to be any more eloquent with his words than he was when he began his journey as a sex therapist at Moordale Secondary.

“Thinking about sex comes very naturally, because I learned everything I know about sex from my mom,” he tells a crowd of college students, much to their horror.

Watch the full teaser above.

Back for Season 4 alongside Butterfield are Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Dua Saleh, Alistair Petrie, Samantha Spiro, Jim Howick, Rakhee Thakrar and Daniel Ings.

The news of the final season is not a complete shocker, considering several of the main cast members had already publicly expressed that they wouldn’t be returning for a potential Season 5. In February, Mackey told the RadioTimes that she’d “said goodbye to Maeve” after previously revealing that she would be taking a step back in Season 4 and her character would reportedly not be as prevalent.

Gatwa, who also co-stars with Mackey in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and is set to become the new lead on Doctor Who, recently wrapped filming his character of Eric.

Season 4 of Sex Education also saw a major cast shakeup with multiple actors exiting the series which include Rakhee Thakrar, Tanya Reynolds, Patricia Allison and Simone Ashley.

“On July 1st (our 7 year anniversary of our first date) we welcomed Barry Bruce Trainor into the world,” she wrote alongside the series of snaps, which also featured the former Spy Kids star cradling baby Barry, as well as a number of adorable solo Barry snaps and one of Trainor in her hospital bed throwing up a peace sign.

“He was a big boy at 8lbs 7oz…and sideways (transverse), but we had an amazing, successful c-section, and I finally got my skin to skin time!,” she added. “Thank you to all of the incredible doctors and nurses who took such great care of u.” Baby Bary joins the couple’s two-year-old son, Riley.

The exciting news was celebrated by a number of fellow stars, including fellow mother of two Mandy Moore, who commented, “Go Mama!! And welcome to the party, Barry!! What a lucky dude!!,” while Paris Hilton — who welcomed her first child earlier this year — added “Congratulations sis! So happy for you!”

Actresses Ashley Benson and Chrissy Metz also offered their congratulations, as did Pentatonix’s Scott Hoying and JoJo Siwa’s mom, Jessalyn.

Back in April the couple revealed the baby’s sex on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the same place where they disclosed the sex of their first born two years earlier.

Telecom and media firm Quebecor said on Wednesday it will pull its ads from Facebook and Instagram, following Meta Platforms’ decision to stop access to news on both the social media platforms in Canada over a law requiring payments to local news publishers.

The “Online News Act,” or House of Commons bill C-18, introduced in April last year laid out rules to force companies such as Meta and Alphabet-owned Google to negotiate commercial deals and pay news publishers for their content.

Google and Meta previously said they would block access to news articles in Canada if the legislation is passed.

Canada’s media industry has called for tighter regulation of internet giants to allow news businesses to recoup financial losses suffered in the years that Facebook and Google gained a greater share of the online advertising market.

Cybersecurity giant Kaspersky has identified nearly three dozen Google Chrome extensions carrying a malicious payload, which collectively have amassed around 87 million downloads, including one which accounted for nine million downloads alone.

The company’s research stems from the discovery of the PDF Toolbox extension, which loaded arbitrary code on all pages viewed by the user. Further analyses revealed a total of 34 malicious extensions, all marketed as serving different purposes.

While the browser extensions have since been removed from the Chrome Web Store, Kaspersky is quick to point out that they will still be available on users’ devices, urging them to check the list of dodgy extensions and remove any malicious ones.

Malicious Chrome extensions

Kaspersky commended Google for removing the malicious extensions upon notification from the researcher responsible for the discovery and a paper by another “team of experts,” but criticizes the company for not acting on customer reviews.

Many complained of URLs which would mysteriously redirect to adware sites, and in fact, a number of the extensions had already been reported as suspicious by users. TechRadar Pro has asked Google to confirm why user feedback went unnoticed.

The following Chrome extensions should be removed, according to Kaspersky’s instructions.

  • Autoskip for Youtube
  • Soundboost
  • Crystal Adblock
  • Brisk VPN
  • Clipboard Helper
  • Maxi Refresher
  • Quick Translation
  • Easyview Reader view

More broadly, Kaspersky challenges browser plugins which typically require full access to view and change data on all sites. As such, they can track users, compromise credentials and payment information, and embed ads.

The cybersecurity firm’s advice, then, is to avoid downloading extensions where possible. It says: “the fewer – the safer.” Users should also remove plugins that they no longer need, and make good use of endpoint protection software wherever possible.

Twitter has addressed recent changes to the platform that for some users impacted their ability to view tweets.

Twitter said on Tuesday the moves were in an effort to “ensure the authenticity of our user base.” According to reports, the social-media platform limited views for unverified accounts to 600 tweets and also required an account to view any Twitter content, among other changes.

“We must take extreme measures to remove spam and bots from our platform,” Twitter said in a statement. “That’s why we temporarily limited usage so we could detect and eliminate bots and other bad actors that are harming the platform. Any advance notice on these actions would have allowed bad actors to alter their behavior to evade detection.”

Some users saw “rate limited exceeded” on their feed when they reached the view limit. That followed the inability to view tweets at all without creating or logging into an account.

“Currently, the restrictions affect a small percentage of people using the platform, and we will provide an update when the work is complete,” Twitter’s statement said. “As it relates to our customers, effects on advertising have been minimal. While this work will never be done, we’re all deeply committed to making Twitter a better place for everyone. At times, even for a brief moment, you must slow down to speed up. We appreciate your patience.”

New Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino linked to the memorandum, saying “you need to make big moves to keep strengthening the platform,” while a Twitter Business account similarly promoted the statement.

“Over the past few days, we’ve taken action to keep making Twitter a great place for everyone. And we want you to know why,” the Twitter Business account said.
