Emergency rooms in northeast Ontario bending but not breaking

Over the July long weekend, more than 20 emergency rooms across the province were forced to close, as a surge in visits clashed with already overburdened and understaffed facilities.

The long weekend closures, which hit southern and rural northwestern hospitals particularly hard, are just the latest alarm bell in an ongoing staffing crisis that has health-care workers calling for assistance.

Late last month, Nickel Belt MPP and NDP health critic France Gelinas criticized the provincial government for allegedly withholding $1.8 billion for health care as part of a mid-year budget cut for 2021-22.

The cuts were revealed in a report released by the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario on July 19, as multiple emergency departments across the province temporarily shut down due to staff shortages.

During a virtual press conference on Wednesday, Gelinas reiterated her concerns that EDs are struggling to stay afloat.

“People have to wait 38 hours — people who are sick enough to be admitted into our hospital,” she said. “The doctors don’t want them to go back home; they need to be admitted. And they will sit in a waiting room, in our hospital ER for 38 hours before being admitted. That’s like six meals, a sleep, over a day and a half, and you are sick enough to be admitted into our hospital.”

On Thursday, Ontario’s health minister directed regulatory colleges for nurses and doctors to develop plans to more quickly register internationally educated professionals, a move nursing groups and critics say falls short of the premier’s promise to do everything in his power to address an emergency room staffing crisis.

Sylvia Jones sent directives Thursday to the College of Nurses of Ontario and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario directing them to make every effort to register those nurses and doctors “as expeditiously as possible” so they can practice in the province and provide reports in two weeks on how they will accomplish that.

The minister also directed the nursing college to develop supports for the internationally trained nurses — for example, to bring their skills to Ontario standards — to allow them to practice “in a timely way.”

Ford won’t commit to repeal wage cap to address ER nurse staffing shortages

Hospitals have been under strain in the province in recent weeks, with some emergency rooms forced to close for hours or days at a time due to staff shortages. More temporary closures are expected this weekend in Clinton, Ont., and St. Mary’s, Ont.

Nursing groups, hospital executives, other health-care professionals and advocates have said that burnout after being on the COVID-19 front lines for more than two years and not being properly compensated have caused people to leave the profession in droves.

Cathryn Hoy, president of the Ontario Nurses’ Association, said the system will benefit from more internationally trained nurses, but she wants to see the report from the college before assessing whether this particular directive will help.

As well, she said that the news of the directive alone does not amount to Premier Doug Ford doing everything in his power to address the staffing crisis, as he promised at a news conference Wednesday.

“This still goes hand in hand with Bill 124,” Hoy said, referencing legislation passed in 2019 that capped wage increases for public sector workers at one per cent for three years.

“You’re going to bring all these internationally trained nurses in, which yes is going to help because they’re nurses, but at the end of the day, who is going to support them and orientate them and mentor them, because there are not enough nurses to do the work that we need in Ontario? So we need to get the retired nurses back and the only way you’re going to get that is if you repeal Bill 124.”

Ford indicated Wednesday that he would not be repealing the wage restraint legislation or increasing a $5,000 retention bonus for nurses. He also noted that the provisions of the legislation expire and won’t apply to the next contract negotiations for nurses.

Staffing crunch hits several Ontario hospitals hard, nurses union raises concerns

So far in northeastern Ontario, emergency rooms have avoided any catastrophic incidents. None of the emergency rooms in the region has yet reported any closures.

But with staffing concerns ongoing, the situation remains precarious, and patients are growing increasingly frustrated.

At Health Sciences North, long waits in the emergency department have become a cause for concern for patients who have experienced the issue in the understaffed and overflowing hospital.

In an emailed response to a request for comment, spokesperson Jessica Lopatka said it currently takes most patients almost nine hours between ED triage to a decision to admit or discharge.

In most cases, patients have to wait nearly four hours before being assessed by a physician.

Though the time between triage and admission to an inpatient bed has improved, Lopatka said there has been a minor increase in the time it takes to be assessed by a physician since 2019.

While HSN’s wait times remain below provincial averages (4.5 hours from triage to physician assessment and 14 hours from triage to admission/discharge decision), staff shortages are still exacerbating the problem.

“HSN has been experiencing significant staffing challenges across our organization particularly over the last two months in acute, emergency and critical care areas,” Lopatka said in a statement, citing retirement rates, people choosing alternative employment options, and a limited number of graduates to recruit as some of the reasons for the shortage.

In June and July, HSN’s ED averaged 205 visitors each day, consistent with numbers seen before the pandemic, with a surge space in place to manage peak patient volumes.

Lopatka said the proportion of patients who are sicker or present with higher complexity cases has gone up.

“Despite these circumstances, HSN has never closed the Emergency Department or come close to doing so,” she said. “At times, it has been necessary to operate at less than the full complement of staff, and we are thankful to all of our healthcare workers who continue to work overtime and take extra shifts to provide the best possible care under these difficult conditions.”

St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Elliot Lake is facing a similar challenge. CEO Jeremy Stevenson outlined those concerns in an article for The Elliot Lake Standard two weeks ago.

Story continues below advertisement

According to Stevenson, the emergency department has narrowly avoided closure on numerous occasions.

“While emergency department closure is something we have yet to experience, we are not immune to the situations other rural hospitals have experienced and continue to prepare for the possibility,” Stevenson wrote. “We are working hard for you every day in an effort to keep our ED open despite the challenges, and we appreciate the ongoing support of our community to stand behind our hospital and our team.”

Short-staffing in the ED has had a ripple effect within the community. Physicians who typically work outside of the hospital have been stepping in to provide the support necessary to keep the facility running. As a result, some patients have had appointments with their doctors in their community offices cancelled.

“Without their willingness to provide this support, there have been many occasions on which our emergency department would have had to close to emergency care,” said Stevenson.

Stevenson wrote that patients only use the ED for true emergencies, and seek alternate non-urgent care from their family physician to prevent unnecessary surges.

At other hospitals across the region, the situation is less clear.

In a response to a request for comment, a spokesperson for the Espanola Regional Hospital and Health Centre said it was not taking media requests regarding hospital operations.

Story continues below advertisement

According to its website, the Espanola hospital’s emergency department operates 24 hours a day and services around 15,000 people each year. It also mentions that treatment in the ED may take several hours if the patient needs testing, if the physician needs to consult a specialist, or if a more critical patient comes in.

While staffing information wasn’t provided, a number of job openings are listed on the hospital’s website and social media, including for a part-time emergency and acute care ward clerk. It is also hiring registered nurses and registered practical nurses, as well as personal support workers.

Similarly, the Manitoulin Health Centre, which operates two sites in Little Current and Mindemoya, declined to provide information about its ED.

“We are very proud of our team for their continued dedication to provide quality health care services to the community,” said spokesperson Kelly Timmermans in an emailed response. “We continue to be very busy in the emergency department with our local residents and an influx of seasonal/tourist visitors.”

The MHC is in the process of renovating and expanding the Mindemoya Emergency Department, a project that has experienced significant delays due to pandemic-related supply chain issues. In May, the organization announced that the completion date of the project was being pushed once again, from July to September.

Story continues below advertisement

According to the MHC website, Mindemoya emergency room handles 49 per cent of the 9,500 patients who visit its EDs. In July and August last year, it said ED visits had jumped three per cent. The expansion project will increase the size of the ED by 1,700 square feet and provide more working space for staff, as well as privacy for patients.

Livestream, Schedule, Lineup – Deadline

Television content is booming. According to Nielsen’s most recent State of Play report, between February 2021 and February 2022 more than three-quarters of a million TV shows can now be watched on streaming and traditional television platforms. That makes the feat of capturing an Emmy nomination all the more impressive, and each of these nominated programs participating in today’s Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees award season event deserve their accolades.

The livestreamed presentation begins today at 8 a.m. PT.

This year, we have 31 shows from 16 networks and streamers joining us to discuss their creations and what it took to bring them to the screen. Again, Emmy history is being made: Netflix’s Squid Game marks the first non-English-language series to secure a Best Drama nomination. Will it follow in Parasite’s footsteps from the 2020 Oscars and secure a win?

We’ve got multiple panels that really exemplify the breadth of small screen entertainment that’s up for offer this year from musical parody Schmigadoon! to Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, to Jemaine Clement’s vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows to Jean Smart-starrer Hacks.

The Limited Series category is especially exciting. While the competition only has the benefit of five awards in their category, as opposed to eight each in Best Drama and Best Comedy, the quality is clear to see from the nominations. Of that group, HBO’s The White Lotus and Hulu’s Dopesick, The Dropout and Pam & Tommy join us on the stage.

There are, of course, a host of returning series that continue to shine throughout the awards season with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Stranger Things and Ted Lasso all making appearances at this year’s event, while in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, we’ve got you covered with nominees like Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

This season also marks the signoff of a number of series, with those earning nominations in their final seasons including AMC’s Better Call Saul, also in this year’s Contenders lineup. It’s always sad to see some of our favorite TV shows say goodbye, but new series have jumped into awards contention, such as Showtime’s Yellowjackets and Apple TV+’s Severance, with new characters and mysteries to unfold in seasons to come.

Lizzo scored her first Emmy nomination this year with her competition reality series Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. The global superstar, who serves as host and exec producer on the Amazon series, is here to tell you all about the show which sees a group of plus-size dancers battling it out for spots as backup dancers.

So sit back, relax and enjoy yet another wonderful day of our Contenders Television: The Nominees, which you can follow along all day with panel coverage on Deadline.com and on our social channels via #DeadlineContenders. On Monday, we will launch the streaming site curating the full panel videos.

Google TV rumor points to 50 live channels coming soon

It looks as though Google TV is going to follow the path trodden by Plex and others by introducing live TV: a list of 50 free, ad-supported television channels has been discovered in the Android TV launcher app for Android devices.

The dutiful code digging was done by 9to5Google (opens in new tab), and refers to “50 channels of live TV without the need to subscribe, sign-up, or download” that users can enjoy.  These channels will apparently cover “news, sports, movies, and shows”.

Google TV already integrates neatly with several live TV apps, including Pluto TV, Philo, and (of course) YouTube TV. However, it seems the update would make these channels available without the need to install any additional apps.

Channel hopping

Some of the channels listed in the code include ABC News Live, America’s Test Kitchen, ChiveTV, Hallmark Movies & More, Nature Vision, NBC News Now, Power Nation, Toon Goggles, USA Today and World Poker Tour.

It’s a reasonably impressive list, even if it doesn’t match up to the likes of Samsung TV Plus – which has more than 200 live channels available for free. As yet there’s no indication of when the addition of these channels on Google TV might be made official, and so far Google hasn’t said anything about them.

Of course TV platforms is just one of many areas where the big tech giants – Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung – are going head to head against each other, and Google will be keen to get any kind of advantage it can.

Analysis: what’s Google TV again?

If you’re confused about what Google TV is, we don’t blame you. The platform/interface/app made its debut on the Chromecast with Google TV in 2020, and has since been making its way out to various other devices as well.

It started life as a revamped interface for Android TV, and is heavily based on Android TV: you get a more modern look, better search integration across multiple apps, and extra features like a watchlist. By the end of this year, Google is looking to update as many devices as possible from Android TV to Google TV.

At the same time, the Google Play Movies & TV app has been replaced by Google TV on smartphones and tablets. This new app is similar to Google TV on televisions and streaming dongles, only it’s running as an app on top of Android rather than a full operating system on a different device.

Wherever you experience Google TV, you can buy and rent digital content, access all your streaming apps, and make use of Google Assistant. You can think of it as a direct competitor to the Apple TV app (not the Apple TV 4K streaming box).

Pete Davidson, Kim Kardashian Breakup Rumors Prompt Kanye Jokes

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson have broken up after nine Instagram-perfect months together – or so E! News sources say – and social media had a field day Friday making pretty much the same joke about Kanye West rushing to his ex-wife’s side faster than you can say “Ye.”

According to E!, the lovebirds have decided to just be friends because of their busy schedules and Kardashian being a West coaster and Davidson an East coast kinda guy “made it really difficult to maintain a relationship.” Davidson has spent a large chunk of the summer in Australia filming “Wizards!” while Kardashian has remained in Los Angeles, raising her four children with West.

Reps for Kardashian and Davidson didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

But don’t rush to assume the Pete-Kim breakup means she’s getting back together with Yeezy. “The divorce is moving ahead with Kanye,” another insider shares with E! News. “They are happily co-parenting.”

Social media went berserk over the news, with one person tweeting, “Kanye outside Kim Kardashian house after Pete Davidson left her,” with a clip from “Regular Show,” (which was, in turn inspired by the iconic “take me back” boombox scene in “Say Anything”).

Others joked that if Kanye isn’t outside Kardashian’s house right now, he’s probably out there celebrating like he just won the Super Bowl. The rapper’s public pleas on social media for Kardashian to come back to him and his not-so-veiled death threats against Davidson actually got him temporarily banned from Instagram earlier this year.

Dominique Jackson suggested that Davidson has been left crying like Will in “Stranger Things” over his unrequited love for Mike. Another person tweeted that Davidson must regret getting that tattoo to pay homage to Kardashian’s four kids, while his tattoo removal guy “just put a down payment on another boat.”

O

Or was the whole relationship simply a sociological study conducted by Columbia University, another person wondered?

“Aurora’s Sunrise”:   a Genocide documentary with animation, was the sensation and the discovery of the 2022 Golden Apricot film festival in Yerevan.  More than a genocide tale, it is one of the long suppression and eventual resurrection of the life and testimony of an indomitable genocide survivor, Aurora Mardiganian (a.k.a Arshaluys Mardigian) ,  who lived to retell her tale at age 83, when an Armenian American scholar from Zoryan Institute tracked her down after her tale was supressed and neglected for over half a century.

With her immediate family all murdered by the Turks, then pressed into slavery by the Kurds, Aurora was finally liberated and shipped  to the States via Norway in the end of 1917.
At a time when “The Armenian question” was still hot news her dreadful story was picked up by Hollywood and exploited as a film in which she herself appeared.  For this purpose she agreed to  have her name changed from the original Armenian Arshaluys to the direct English equivalent, “Aurora”.  However, the strain of reliving her horrible experiences soon became too much for the 18 year old and she ended up in a convent, her role in the money making film taken over by an actress. Once the subject was no longer profitable the film, as well as Aurora’s entire story was dropped like a hot potato and allowed to lapse into obscurity.

Perhaps a better name for the current film would be “Aurora’s Resurrection”.
In live footage scenes from  that interview Aurora, now 83, states that the true horrors of Turkish brutality have never been shown before — we then see a shot of women empaled on stakes and left to die in an open field — the stakes  still  protruding from swollen bellies.

Even for Hollywood’s silent film, the scene was so horiffic, that they changed it to crucifixion of women,
What really sets this film apart is the ingenious use of hyper-realistic animation — based on direct tracing over old photographs — giving these images a new life as if they had been taken just now, not a hundred years ago — giving the entire film a striking impact of immediate actuality.
Inestimable credit  for this must  be extended to art director Tigran Arakelyan, who coordinated the work of -many artists and animators, both from Armenia and Lithuania (the film is co-production between Armenia, Germany and Lithuania)  to achieve the dazzling final effect. Aurora’s Sunrise, regardless of any prizes it may win along the way, will surely go down as a new landmark in Armenian cinema.

By orchestrating and directing this masterpiece of documentary art, Inna Sahakyan has carved out a permanent place for herself in the history of Armenian cinema.

Aurora’s  Sunrise is still working on its North American festival premiere. If It attracts the wider attention there that it so richly deserved it may well go down as an international landmark of  innovative documentary cinema in general as well.

‘Memory Box’ Review: Tender Lebanese Drama Unearths a Mother’s Past

A daughter uncovers her mother’s wartime scrapbooks in this mixed-media dance of memory set between present-day Montreal and 1980s Beirut.

Though it feels like the phrase “generational trauma” is everywhere these days, it’s only in the past decade that growing mental health awareness has made such terms ubiquitous. Though scientists have long studied the ways inherited trauma can actually alter our DNA, only recently have epigenetics filtered into everyday usage. But artists do not need science to tell them what they feel in their bones, and film is a powerful tool to illustrate the ephemeral memories one stores in the body.

Set between present-day Montreal and 1980s Beirut, “Memory Box” actualizes a treasure trove of unprocessed trauma in the form of a mysterious box of letters, scrapbooks, and tapes. When a curious daughter discovers a vast archive of her mother’s distant past, she begins to understand the difficult woman who raised her in new ways. As cassette recordings fade into voice memos, the work of filmmakers Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige blends old and new in a lyrical mixed-media dance of memory. Blurring the lines between past and present, “Memory Box” floats in and out of two parallel stories, never quite allowing either one to take hold. As the focus shifts from daughter to mother, the audience is caught in the middle. Much like memory itself, the threads never fully coalesce until the very end.

We meet idealistic young Alex (Paloma Vauthier) while carefully wrapping grape leaves with her Teta (Clémence Sabbagh), a stoic grandmother who wishes Alex’s Arabic were better and gently scolds her for wasting water. As they anxiously await Maia’s (Rim Turki) arrival for Christmas dinner during a blizzard, a mysterious box appears from a kindly postman. Labeled with a mysterious woman’s name, Teta insists on hiding the box from Alex’s mother, saying “The past drives your mom crazy.” Later that night, Alex sends a pensive voice memo to a friend, describing the loneliness of their three-person holiday with a poetic lilt: “We eat with the dead and ghosts.”

When Maia discovers the box, unleashing a torrent of emotion that leaves Alex resolutely intrigued. After her mother sweeps the contents of the box — scrapbooks, photos, journals, and cassette tapes — back under the proverbial rug on a shelf in the basement, Maia sneaks the materials up to her room and begins unpacking her mother’s hidden past.

She is instantly enthralled by the beautiful old photos of her young mother, excitedly remarking to her friend how much they look alike. She discovers letters written to a friend she’s never heard of, and the story of a young romance with a man named Raja. She is shocked to learn her mother wanted to be a photographer, and her collection of photos shows the promise of a young artist exploring her creativity for the first time.

As Alex reads the letters aloud, the photos skip into a kind of stop-motion animation, bringing the stories on the page to life. “With Raja, I feel alive again,” the young Maia writes. “He gets me away from the sadness reigning at home. As more of the story unfolds, it appears Teta did not approve of Maia’s choice and controlled her every move as the violence in Beirut escalated. “Mom’s killing me. Her fear rules us,” she writes.

The abstract images morph into longer scenes, though rarely with any dialogue, instead relying on the narration of Maia’s journals to tell the story. The filmmakers remain committed to their mixed-media memory collage, even as the complexity of the story grows beyond the borders of a photograph. As Alex longs to connect with her mother, so does the audience. As long as Maia avoids telling Alex about her past, the central characters argue and dodge each other, only truly connecting by the film’s end. It’s a fitting representation of the distance between them, but it makes for a less-than-satisfying drama.

The conclusion, which sees Maia return to Beirut with Alex in tow, is quite moving, despite having little dialogue. As Maia reunites with her old friends, now middle-aged and greying, the group dances to Blondie’s “One Way or Another” with the same wild abandon they had as teenagers. It’s in these moments of images mirroring each other that “Memory Box” work best, as the past echoes its song into a hopefully brighter future.

Grade: B

“Memory Box” is now playing at New York’s Film Forum.

20 Questions Podcast—Jennifer Coolidge’s ‘White Lotus’ Season 3 Dream – Deadline

Welcome to 20 Questions on Deadline, our new interview podcast with a twist. Every week I’ll be asking onscreen stars a set of quirky questions designed to dig into their best advice, biggest fears and fondest memories.

For this first episode, I sat down with Emmy nominee Jennifer Coolidge. Hot from the Sicilian set of The White Lotus Season 2, she’s already raring to go for a third go-round and reveals a very special co-star she’d like to join that cast.

Having loved the experience of making Season 2’s “incredible story”, Coolidge expects the audience reaction to be very positive. “It would probably be impossible to not like it,” she says.

We also get into how the show’s creator Mike White based her character Tanya McQuoid on Jennifer herself, but how secretly she’d much rather be like her iconic American Pie role, Stifler’s mom.

Plus, she reveals how to pull off a truly successful ‘bend and snap’ move.

Listen to the podcast above and subscribe and listen to 20 Questions: On Deadline on Spotify and on Apple podcasts.

A version of this interview will also appear in print in our AwardsLine magazine and at Deadline.com from August 10th.

Mike Lang Dead: Renowned Pianist Was 80

Mike Lang, one of the preeminent pianists in Hollywood history, died of lung cancer Friday morning at his home in Studio City. He was 80.

Lang played piano (or organ, harpsichord or celeste) on an estimated 2,000 film and TV scores dating back to the mid-1960s, including scores by virtually every great film composer of the past 50 years: John Williams (“Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Catch Me If You Can”), Jerry Goldsmith (“Gremlins,” “The Russia House”), John Barry (“Body Heat,” “The Specialist”), Henry Mancini (“10”), Alex North (“The Shoes of the Fisherman”), Elmer Bernstein (“The Rainmaker”), Miklós Rózsa (“Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid”) and many others.

Composer Lalo Schifrin (“Mission: Impossible”) was among Lang’s earliest champions in Hollywood, adding Lang’s piano to what eventually became the Grammy-winning Paul Horn album “Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts” in 1965. Lang played piano for Schifrin on dozens of subsequent albums and film scores including the Oscar-nominated “The Competition” and “The Sting II.”

Lang also played for composers including James Newton Howard (“Glengarry Glen Ross,” “Lady in the Water”), Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin”), Marc Shaiman (“City Slickers”), John Debney (“Dreamer”), Hans Zimmer (“As Good As It Gets,” “Pearl Harbor”), Randy Newman (“Toy Story,” “Secretariat”), Danny Elfman (“Batman Returns”), Bill Conti (“The Right Stuff”) and Clint Eastwood (“The Bridges of Madison County”), among others.

Composer Howard, also a pianist, told Variety: “Mike was a dear friend, colleague and teacher, gifted with monumental talent. Anyone who knew him would agree there was never a more gracious, humble and brilliant musician – a musician’s musician.”

Ralph Grierson, a fellow studio pianist, recalled the late ’60s-early ’70s era “when there was a plethora of new keyboard instruments, sometimes a new one every week. Hollywood being Hollywood, everyone wanted the latest, hippest sound. Mike and I used to joke about it being ‘earn while you learn’ because we would arrive at the studio, find an instrument we had never seen before, and be expected to perform immediately. As a player, he was one of the best; more importantly, he was a great musician. I’m honored to have been Mike’s colleague and friend.”

Lang’s hundreds of TV credits as keyboardist ranged from “The Waltons” and “Kung Fu” in the 1970s to such later shows as “Amazing Stories,” “The Simpsons,” “Frasier,” “Penny Dreadful,” “Family Guy,” “American Dad” and “The Orville.”

Interviewed last year for the “Legacy of John Williams” podcast, Lang reflected on his process: “The music itself tells me how to relate to it. I have a sound in my head. I play as an improviser, even if I’m playing Beethoven. I’m hearing the music as if it’s in Beethoven’s head. When I get it to match, so that the real sound comes out of the piano and it matches [what’s in] my head, the piano disappears. It’s a facilitator for me. The last thing I think about is, ‘I am a pianist.’ I try to make the music breathe, be vocal and expressive, and to that end the piano loses its identity.”

Lang was conversant in every conceivable musical idiom and genre, a versatility that kept him in demand for pop and jazz albums as well. He played for Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie Nelson, Dionne Warwick, John Denver, Lionel Ritchie, Leonard Cohen, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Vince Gill, NSYNC, Diana Krall, John Lennon, the Commodores, Peggy Lee, Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand and Frank Zappa.

He was born Michael Herbert Lang on Dec. 10, 1941, in Los Angeles (but changed his name, many years later, to Michael Anthony Lang), the son of Jennings Lang, an agent who later became a producer of such Universal films as “Earthquake” and “Airport 1975.”

Mike Lang began piano lessons at age 4 1/2 and eventually studied music with L.A. composers Leonard Stein and George Tremblay, studio pianist Pearl Kaufman, and Schifrin. He graduated with a music degree from the University of Michigan in 1963.

In addition to his studio work, Lang often played jazz clubs in the L.A. area including Donte’s, Shelly’s Manne Hole, the Baked Potato and other venues. He later produced albums for his stepmother, singer-actress Monica Lewis and, in 1994, issued his first solo album on the Varèse Sarabande label, a collection of Henry Mancini songs he arranged and performed titled “Days of Wine and Roses.”

Lang turned composer briefly, for Robert Forster’s 1986 film “Hollywood Harry,” and over the years penned songs for such jazz notables as Stan Getz, Bob James, Lee Ritenour, Herb Alpert, Tom Scott and Dave Grusin. He also debuted jazz piano concerti by Byron Olson and Brad Dechter.

In July 2019 he played a sold-out Piano Spheres concert at the Colburn School’s Zipper Hall that earned a rave from the L.A. Times: “one of L.A.’s great known unknowns, a pianist and composer who doesn’t often get the spotlight… Lang reminds us of the seldom recognized but significant intersection between contemporary music and Hollywood… the revelation here was hearing our city’s musical identity in a single voice.”

Survivors include his partner, Deborah Pearl; former spouse Karen Lang; son Dave Lang, also a musician; a brother, producer-director Rocky Lang, and grandson Sunny.

Ukraine’s Children Bear Burdens of War: Photos

A late-July morning, and the sounds of the summer camp were the sounds of summer camps everywhere as children raced from activity to activity.

But the Midgard Forest Camp is in Kyiv, in wartime Ukraine, and when the air was pierced by a warning siren, the children knew what to do, abandoning their jump ropes and tennis games and dashing for safety.

It is a routine as familiar as lunch.

War has brought a new reality to Ukrainians, but some things still hold true, and as the weather warmed, some parents were faced with the perennial question: What should we do with the kids this summer?

With children isolated and deprived of social contact — some driven by fierce combat to flee their homes — schools and camps began springing into action to offer programs.

Parents considering sending their children to the Forest Camp, which is run by the Midgard School, may once have asked about counselor-camper ratios or art programs, but on Feb. 24, when Russian forces surged across the border into Ukraine, all of that changed.

“My first question to the school was whether they have a shelter,” recalled Nataliia Ostapchuk as she dropped off her 6-year-old son, Viacheslav Ivatin, one recent morning.

Yes, it does, and when the siren went off the other morning, that is where the campers headed.

The children spent about an hour in the basement shelter, and for the most part, they took it in stride.

The shelter covers about 5,000 square feet, and given the frequency with which the children must go there — at least once a day — the school has equipped it well. Beyond the tables and chairs, there are toys, table games, television screens. There is also an air-supply system, toilets, showers and Wi-Fi.

“I don’t feel like I’m in a shelter,” said Polina Salii, 11, whose family fled the fighting in Pokrovsk, a town in the east.

Our Coverage of the Russia-Ukraine War

Back in Pokrovsk, her family would race down to a basement repurposed as a shelter, with canned food, porridge and liter bottles of water.

“When there was shelling in the distance,” Polina recalled, “we spent the whole night there.”

The campers soon seemed to forget their basement surroundings, content to spend time with their electronic devices as their parents were sent text messages of reassurance. But when the siren wound down, the children responded joyfully, climbing the stairs to resume their day.

At least, until the next siren goes off.

The Midgard School opened in 2017, and as in past years, when summer came, it transformed into a camp.

But this is not like any other year.

This summer, the camp offers a 50 percent discount for the children of Ukrainian military members, many of whom are deployed on the front lines far to the east. About a third of the campers are from internally displaced families, who attend at no cost. And the campers no longer go on day trips off campus. They need to stay close to the shelter, in case the siren sounds.

Many of the families of internally displaced campers arrived with little more than they could carry. The school has also provided housing for three families that fled the fighting in the east. They are living in what is ordinarily the kindergarten building.

Five years ago, when her son was born, Maryna Serhienko decided that Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, could use a family development center. So she founded one. She called it Uniclub, and it offered community members a kindergarten, a summer camp and a gym where mothers could bring their children.

Like the Forest Camp, Uniclub recast itself after Ukraine was invaded.

“When the war started, we organized a shelter,” said Ivan Zubkov, Maryna’s husband, who helps her manage the center. “Families with their children — and even pets — were living in the shelter room.”

Public kindergartens are not open this summer in much of Ukraine, but Uniclub has 25 children in its kindergarten and 12 in its camp.

It has also offered services for children displaced from Mariupol, the eastern city that was brutally besieged by Russian forces. Uniclub provides clothes for those who need them, along with discounts and tuition waivers.

Some families have landed at Uniclub to escape fighting elsewhere in Ukraine — if only as a way station.

Many have moved on and, with no prospect of a cease-fire in sight, some have left Ukraine altogether. Their pets were another story.

“Now we have a lot of guinea pigs, birds and even a turtle that we are taking care of,” Mr. Zubkov said.

It might once have seemed an unfathomable summer activity, but Ukraine itself has become unfathomable, and so a program to teach children how to reduce the risk from mines suddenly does not look so odd.

The class is put on by Soloma Cats, a charitable foundation that works with specialists from the State Emergency Service and the National Police. Over the course of a week, in five districts of Kyiv, children and their parents are offered safety lessons about mines and unexploded ordnance.

Though Russian forces pulled back from Kyiv after early efforts to take the capital failed, areas around it were occupied, and when the invaders withdrew, repositioning themselves for an assault on the east, there were reports of mines and booby-traps left behind.

“Today, more than 100,000 square kilometers of the territory in Ukraine is mine-contaminated,” the charity says. “Children and adults all need to know how to react if they find a dangerous object.”

The war has taken a heavy toll on the children of Ukraine.

Many have been uprooted from communities turned into killing fields. Many have lost family members to the fighting. And many have themselves been killed.

This past week, the Ukrainian authorities announced that since the beginning of the Russian invasion, at least 358 children had died and 693 children had been injured.

Not many children remain on Ukraine’s front lines. Most have been taken out of harm’s way, to centers for internally displaced people or out of the country.

But some parents have been reluctant to leave, or to allow their children to do so. And so camp or any summer program all remains at most a distant dream. The goal is simple survival.

“I know it’s not safe here,” said one mother, Viktoriia Kalashnikova, who stood near her 13-year-old daughter, Dariia, in a courtyard of Marinka, in the east, as the town came under fire. “But where to go? Where to stay? Who will take us? Who will pay?”

Even those who make it out of the fighting can find every day an ordeal of uncertainty.

In Kyiv, Ihor Lekhov and his wife, Nonna, recounted fleeing Mariupol with their parents and their three children. With Mariupol now in Russian hands and their old home partly destroyed, the family has been living in the capital since March.

But they have found welcome in Kyiv — and even a summer program for their children. Uniclub took the two older boys in at no charge.

“In the camp, there are sport and team games,” said Maksym Lekhov, 12. “I like to walk and play outside most of all, but also I like to join group classes.”

Still, there is something he would like even more.

“I want the war to end,” Maksym said. “And I want us back home.”

Jeffrey Gettleman and Oleksandra Mykolyshyn contributed reporting,

After Leaving ‘House Of Cards,’ Kevin Spacey Will Pay The Producers $31 Million

After being removed from the Netflix series House of Cards due to claims of sexual harassment on the set, Kevin Spacey will pay the producers a sizable settlement.

Kevin Spacey, a 63-year-old actor, was ordered on Thursday by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mel Red Rekana to pay $29.5 million in damages as well as an extra $1.5 million in legal costs.

Related story

After repeated accusations of sexual assault, the House of Cards producers cut off their ties with Spacey in 2017.

After learning that Spacey was blatantly preying on children, including a series assistant producer, the group opened an investigation.

After breaking the company’s sexual harassment policy, Spacey was subsequently told to make up the money to the studio in 2020.

Related story

At the time, Media Rights Capital asserted that Spacey had cost them millions in lost revenue because of his inappropriate behavior, which led to the show’s cancellation and a five-episode reduction in the sixth season of House of Cards.

Later, Spacey’s attorneys submitted a protest urging the court to reject the request. The opposition claimed in a statement that despite Spacey taking part in the culture that predominated on the set, which was full of sexual innuendos, jokes, and benign pranks, “he never harassed anyone.”

Spacey actually stopped when he heard that his actions had made someone feel unwelcome or unwelcome in any other way.

After Netflix informed the petitioners that Spacey could not and would not be involved in Season 6, the lawyers said, “as the Court of Arbitration agreed, the episode decrease was a predetermined conclusion.”

However, the judge disregarded the fact that Netflix was not even aware of the conduct he deemed to be a breach of contract at the time this decision was made.

In other words, the damages suffered by the plaintiffs could not be linked to the breaches identified by the court since they had already occurred by the time the violations were discovered.

Maher Roasts Kyrsten Sinema for Holding up Climate Bill to Appease Hedge Funders (Video)

In his monologue on Friday’s episode of “Real Time,” Bill Maher was thrilled by the news that, at least at the moment, it looks like the Democrats are going to pass a fairly robust bill to combat climate change.

But he took some time to mock contrarian Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema for holding the bill up in order to squeeze concessions that benefit wealthy hedge fund managers.

For those in need of a catch up, on Friday Sinema ended her latest narcissistic parading by announcing she’s agreed to support the bill. Her sticking point had been a part of the bill that would have made minor changes to the so-called “carried interest loophole,” a tax law quirk that allows executives at private equity firms and hedge funds to pay lower taxes than their employees. She supports the loophole and demanded that provision be removed from the bill.

Interestingly, Sinema has made no public statements explaining her demand. Nevertheless, Democrats agreed to strike the provision and so she says she’ll support the bill. Of course, she’s broken her promises multiple times, but for now at least it appears she won’t do anything further to damage the bill.

Now back to Maher, who kicked off his monologue saying “Biden got COVID, again, and had the best week of his presidency. I don’t know if this is related but today Kamala Harris was seen rubbing herself with a coughing monkey.”

Maher riffed on Biden’s declaration that Monkeypox is a public health emergency, joking, “I’ve had it with viruses, I really have. First I couldn’t have unprotected gay sex. Then I couldn’t eat at a Chinese wet market. Now I can’t play in waste water? F— this.”

Then he resumed talking about the political news. “Jobs, way up. I mean, like crazy up. We’ve gotten all the jobs back from the pandemic, unemployment is 3.5%, gas prices way down, and he got his big climate bill today,” Maher said.

“Kristin? Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona, you familiar with her?” Maher continued. “She joined up. it’s good to see the Democrats can be bipartisan with themselves.”

“She was holding this up for something called the carried interest loophole. This is very important to her. They gave it up,” Maher said. “It’s something only hedge fund managers care about. Do you care about this? She looked around Scottsdale and said ‘it’s about time someone stood up for the wealthy.’”

How Demand for the HBO Max-Discovery+ Combo Will Stack Up in the Streaming Wars | Charts

“This is a tax loophole that only involves hedge fund managers. You know, I’ve seen many campaign ads in my life. Firemen. Farmers. You know, welders. A kid pulling a dog in a wagon. It’s rarely hedge fund managers, I’ve never seen one with a guy, ‘it’s morning in America and I’ve been up all night, snorting blow off a hooker’s ass,” Maher added.

Maher also had a pretty good joke about Republican opposition to the climate bill: “This is the big climate bill, not one Republican voted for it. It’s gonna be 50 plus the Vice President passing this thing. You know, environment? They’re just not into it. If there was just some way to get the Earth pregnant.”

Ron Howard Video Interview For ‘Thirteen Lives’ – Behind The Lens – Deadline

Deadline

As a director Ron Howard is no stranger to big screen stories of true life heroes and risky undertakings. From Apollo 13 to Backdraft and countless other film and tv projects the Oscar and Emmy winning filmmaker is back with two unique new ventures, both dealing with real life disasters and the human spirit in horrendous situations that demonstrates compassion and courage, showing the best of us, not the worst.  Both certainly also have inspiring messages about the importance of volunteerism and concern for our fellow human beings in a Trumpian era that has divided people. Thirteen Lives which is a theatrical telling of the famous Thai Cave Rescue of 13 boys in 2018, and the documentary We Feed People which focuses on the Herculean efforts of chef Jose Andres to marshall forces and provide food and support in numerous tragic disasters, are both examples of shining a light on the everyday heroes among us.

Howard visits me for the latest episode of my Deadline video series, Behind The Lens in which we talk about how now is the right time for these two important films to hopefully help bring us together, rather than apart.  Thirteen Lives began a limited run in theatres last week and today starts streaming globally on Amazon’s Prime Video. We Feed People has been nominated for an Emmy as Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Special and is running on Disney +.   Howard and I talk about all aspects of both, the challenges inherent in making them, why he is just as excited these days to be a Documentary filmmaker as he is on the narrative side of movies, what having both of these largely seen via streamers means to him in this day and age, plus so much more.

2022 EMMYS PREDICTIONS:
OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

AWARDS PREDICTION COMMENTARY:

“Euphoria” is the second most nominated drama series with 16, with the HBO show seeing a significant increase from its single-digit tally for the first season. With Zendaya looking like the front-runner in lead actress drama, the show dominated the social media and “watercooler” conversations when it aired, which could lead to multiple surprise wins, including other acting possibilities such as Sydney Sweeney, Martha Kelly and Colman Domingo. However, if there’s an HBO show to top the category, that looks to be “Succession” (for the moment).

Speaking of “Succession,” domination is an understatement when referring to the HBO drama winner of 2020. With 25 mentions, it’s the most nominated series of the year across all categories, including three directing and 14 acting noms, a record for any series in Emmy history. With Critics Choice and SAG wins under its belt, it’s the front-runner and could be unstoppable (unless others are seeking an alternative).

Making history as the first non-English language series ever to be nominated, Netflix’s bloody spectacle “Squid Game” maxed out in all its possible nominations, capping at 14 for its kickoff season. The streamer is the reigning champ in this race, after sweeping in 2021 with “The Crown.” They look to extend that history-making presence with the most watched program in Netflix history.

Wrapping its fourth season and the second most watched series in the history of Netflix, “Stranger Things” landed a respectable 13 nominations, the second most since its Emmy debut. While it’s likely to pick up plenty of the Creative Arts categories such as music supervision and visual effects, with no writing, directing or acting noms, it may prove too difficult to nab the big one.

Showtime’s first drama nominee since “Homeland” in 2016, the first season of the mystery series “Yellowjackets” picked up seven noms including directing and two integral writing nominations. With actress Melanie Lynskey emerging as a dark horse to win lead drama actress, major wins tend to spill into other categories, including drama series. However, it’s the least nominated drama contender in the mix, and may not have the fuel to get it off the “Emmy Island.”

Fourteen nominations for the inaugural season of “Severance,” the Apple TV+ dystopian drama had a respectable showing with names in the acting, directing and writing categories. As the first drama nominee for the streamer, and after a vibrant presence at San Diego Comic-Con, it could manage to duplicate the success of “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2017 and win the big prize. Phase two campaigning will be key.

The final season of “Ozark” nabbed a respectable 13 nominations, adding to its overall tally of 45 in its entirety. The crime drama ended had a satisfying conclusion, and with many of its actors contending to win their respective categories – Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner and Tom Pelphrey – it could be an acting branch favorite for the Netflix series.

AMC’s “Breaking Bad” prequel has received an Emmy nom for each of its seasons. With the second half of the final season airing during voting, TV Academy members may feel inclined to check it off, along with its actors Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn, who are both in the mix. However, seven nominations in total may be too few to clear some of the louder contenders in the mix, with nearly four times as many noms.

Manoj Bajpayee, Gajraj Rao Most Engaging in Adaptation of Master’s Stories

Ray

Directors: Srijit Mukherjee (Forget Me Not, Bahrupiya), Abhishek Chaubey (Hungama Kyon Hain Barapa), Vasan Bala (Spotlight)

Cast: Ali Fazal, Shruthy Menon, Shweta Basu Prasad (Forget Me Not); Kay Kay Menon (Bahrupiya) ; Manoj Bajpayee, Gajaraj Rao (Hungama Kyon Hain Barpa); Harshvarrdhan Kapoor, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Radhika Madan (Spotlight).

It is never easy to bring a novel or short story to life through images. There have been exceptions though, like Satyajit Ray and Adoor Gopalakrishnan among a few others. Both Ray and Adoor did justice and more to adaptations.

Ray himself was a brilliant writer, and four of his short stories have been filmed as a four-episode anthology titled, Ray, and is now streaming on Netflix. Handled by three directors, the work leaves room for improvement in its structuring, scripting and editing. A few of the performances do stand out.

Ali Fazal is interesting as Ipsit in Srijit Mukherji’s Forget Me Not. As a dashing, debonair and extremely intelligent corporate partner who arrogantly prides himself as one whose memory never fails, he runs into a personal and professional disaster that is orchestrated by one he trusts. One evening, he meets a woman at a bar who tells him that they have had a sexual fling in a hotel close to the Ajanta Caves. Ipsit cannot seem to remember that at all, despite the woman minutely detailing the encounter. This segment loses its clarity towards the end, and Shweta Basu Prasad as Ipsit’s secretary, Maggie, is trifle too wooden.

The other episode by Mukherji, Bahrupiya, has Kay Kay Menon playing a movie makeup artist, who uses his skills to destroy his adversaries, but soon reaches a point of utter helplessness. Menon is not bad as Indrashish, trying to change his appearance by using different kinds of prosthetics. But is not prepared for the tragic consequences.

Abhishek Chaubey’s Hungama Kyon Hai Barpa tackles a very distressing condition, kleptomania. Shot almost entirely inside a first-class airconditioned coupe (I could not believe that A/C coaches are so swanky), this part is the most engaging. Manoj Bajpayee’s Musafir Ali is shocked to see Baig (Gajraj Rao), also travelling with him.

A kleptomaniac, Ali remembers that he had stolen a classy dress watch from Baig ten years ago. Baig does not seem to remember the incident, and the twist at the end is just superb. Chaubey’s episode has been handled with a lot of care, and Bajpayee is an excellent performer with a range that is amazing. I remember him as a cowering homosexual in Aligarh, as a wily young man who tries to break the system in Satyagraha, as psychological wreck trapped inside a room in Gali Guleiyan and as a ruthless Chambal dacoit in Sonchiriya. Rao is also great as one who pretends with marvelous alacrity.

Vasan Bala talks about religion vs cinema in Spotlight, and is markedly different from Ray’s Ghanshatru, a magnificent take on religion vs not entertainment but science. Adapted from Henrik Ibsen’s Play, An Enemy of the People, Ray’s work had the late Soumitra Chatterjee essaying a medical doctor who tries hard to convince villagers that the temple prasad is responsible for the outbreak of an epidemic. Spotlight focusses on the life of a film star, Vikram (Harshvarrdhan Kapoor), who gets angry when he realises that the sadhvi, Divya Didi (Radhika Madan), draws a much bigger crowd in the hotel where he is staying than he could ever hope for.

The climax is engaging and lays bare what Didi really is. Chandan Roy Sanyal as Vikram’s agent, Robby, actually overshadows the rest of the cast. The actor may well be the one reason to watch Spotlight.

19 Times TV Shows Brought Back Old Storylines

The Umbrella Academy finally remembered that Diego used to be a vigilante, but it took them two years.

TV shows tend to forget things from past seasons, leading to dropped storylines and unanswered questions that can be really frustrating.

But every once in a while, they randomly pick back up a storyline from seasons before, or make a nod to a disappeared character that tells us they didn’t actually forget. Sometimes, it’s just a little reference to the storyline, and sometimes, they fully pick it back up.

Here are 19 times TV shows finally seemed to remember old storylines, and either picked them back up, gave them some resolution, or just provided a cute nod to them:

1.

Remember how Diego started out The Umbrella Academy as a vigilante? He was a much more serious character, and it seemed like this would be a major plot point, but then it was just sort of…dropped.

But not to worry! Because the show finally remembered the moment in the middle of Season 3, when Diego briefly mentions his past to Allison.

2.

You probably want to forget, but I’m sure we all remember El’s sister Kali from that one Stranger Things episode everyone hates.

The writers smartly chose not to revisit the plot-line, but Kali did get a blink-and-you-miss-it reference two seasons after she appeared, when Henry briefly mentions a time when El and Eight (Kali) were growing up together:

3.

Another character that essentially vanished into thin air was Seven from Married… with Children. He was introduced in Season 7, but then a few episodes later, it was like he’d never even existed.

Until a brief moment in Season 8, when you can see his face on the back of a milk carton. To me, this example is less cute than wildly creepy. It’s truly one of the weirdest TV mysteries ever.

4.

Another character to essentially disappear was Rachel on One Tree Hill. After becoming a series regular in Season 4, it was weird not to have her in Season 5. She did come back for a few episodes, during which Brooke vowed to help her with her drug addiction. But then she stole money from Brooke for drugs and left.

And that was all we saw of her for two seasons!!! This was super frustrating because not only was she a main character, but it seemed extremely unlikely Brooke wouldn’t try harder to look for her after fighting so hard for her. She literally isn’t even mentioned for years. When she does come back, she apologizes to Brooke, but then that’s basically all we see of the Brooke/Rachel friendship that was so huge in Season 4.

5.

Sometimes, it’s relationships that disappear. Like Cordelia and Wes, who had a thing on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But when Wes showed up on Angel, becoming a series regular with Cordy, there was basically no reference to this fact. For seasons.

Until finally, Cordy and Wes are talking about his feelings for Fred, and Cordy finally brings up the fact that they once almost had a relationship. In Season 3, four years after their relationship first aired.

6.

Another relationship that seemed to disappear was Caroline and Nick’s relationship on New Girl. They get back together at the end of Season 1 and plan to move in together.

Jess doesn’t think Nick should go, and tries to stop him, but Nick decides to do it anyways…until he shows up at the end of the episode, making it clear he’s changed his mind. Except there’s literally no mention of what happened between him and Caroline.

Until two seasons later, when Caroline randomly shows back up and asks Nick why he left. As the show liked to bring back exes, I suppose this wasn’t surprising, but it was weird Caroline went so long before being mentioned.

7.

This one was more of a fun reference to an old storyline, but I always thought it was weird that after Shelby and Winston broke up on New Girl, she was literally never mentioned again — especially since the show did bring back a lot of other exes.

But in rewatching the show, I noticed she actually did get a quick reference in the same “Exes” episode when Caroline comes back.

8.

Remember how Elena started out The Vampire Diaries always writing in her diary? Hence the name of the show? And then that just sort of…stopped?

Six years later, the writers seemed to remember their show was called The Vampire Diaries. In Season 7, they finally decided to bring diaries back, and have Caroline keep a journal so Elena knew what she’d missed when she woke up.

And Caroline did! For an episode. Then…it was quickly dropped again.

9.

Another TVD storyline that was quickly glossed over was Damon compelling Caroline into a sexual relationship with him/basically being his blood bag. Which is pretty unforgivable.

But except for Caroline telling Damon he “sucks” when she remembers this upon becoming a vampire in Season 2, and a series-long coldness toward him, it’s never mentioned again. For years.

It’s finally brought it up in the show’s final season, when Caroline enters Damon’s mind and forgives him for what he did to her. Even then, it’s not mentioned explicitly.

10.

That’s not the only time a show seemed primed to tackle a serious issue…before forgetting about it completely. In Gossip Girl, Blair’s bulimia was featured in one episode. It wasn’t even named. And then the show entirely forgot about it.

Until Season 4 — three years later — when Blair brings it up to Serena after Juliet drugs her. Still, she calls it her “problem.”

There’s also a Season 5 reference where Dan (and then Beatrice) thinks Blair is bulimic, but it’s played for humor.

11.

Gossip Girl actually dropped quite a few storylines. Like that time Serena’s dad pretended her mom had cancer.

He literally flees from the police over this. Then he returns a year later, and A) Rufus is the only one who seems to remember what he did to Lily, and B) the fact that he should be on the run from the police is completely ignored.

12.

One last Gossip Girl one — Poppy, Gabriel, and the Ponzi scheme. The whole plot goes pretty unresolved at the end of Season 2, when it’s interrupted by some Serena/Lily drama.

We do have an extremely brief reference to Georgina getting Dan’s money back and deporting Poppy, but it’s a pretty unsatisfying conclusion to the arc. Until it’s mentioned again four years/seasons later, when Poppy has a fashion line, and no one besides Blair seems to care that, like Serena’s dad, Poppy should be on the run from the law.

To give credit to the writers, both these storylines were mentioned extremely briefly by Eric in the Season 4 finale, in one of my favorite GG lines ever that clearly pokes fun at these wild storylines that we all forgot about.

13.

One character who literally disappeared on a show was Marcie in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But I’m less concerned with the fact that we didn’t see Marcie again than with the fact that an FBI unit using invisible people to commit assassinations was clearly introduced, then never mentioned again. Like, it’s established that this whole invisibility thing is a common occurrence that is exploited by the government. Then it’s forgotten…

…for six whole years. In Season 7, we do finally have it happen again, though it’s very brief and unresolved, as Buffy gets distracted with other resurfacing issues from earlier seasons.

14.

Back to another big character who kind of disappeared on a show — Izzie on Grey’s Anatomy. While her character did leave town in her last episode (Season 6, Episode 12), it wasn’t expected that she’d never come back on the show. She was still a big part of numerous characters’ lives when she left.

15.

Not only was the character dropped, but so was the storyline where she froze her eggs using Alex’s sperm. This was brought up in a Season 12 episode (seven seasons after it was last brought up) when Jo finds out about it.

The storyline is once again dropped…until Season 16, when both Izzie’s departure and the fate of her frozen eggs are resolved in a controversial storyline where Alex left to be with Izzie.

16.

Sometimes, shows actually reference the fact that they completely forgot about a character. Boy Meets World did this a few times. One involved Morgan, Cory, and Eric’s joke-cracking little sister who disappeared after the Season 2 finale.

However, midway through Season 3, the show remembers her. Cory makes a funny reference to her, and she shows up again — played by a different actress.

Joking that she’s been in her room this whole time, she then becomes an important character on the show again.

17.

The whole Mrs. Grunwald storyline on Pretty Little Liars was ridiculous, especially because PLL...wasn’t a supernatural show. And Mrs. Grunwald was a creepy psychic.

Luckily, they mostly dropped it after the supernatural spin-off Ravenswood failed…though they didn’t exactly give the storyline much closure. Then, randomly, three seasons later, Mrs. Grunwald shows up again to be creepy and leave town again.

Most notably, she gets a bloody nose when looking at Noel, which is pretty explicitly supernatural. Did this mean the show was embracing the supernatural again? Nope! It’s once again dropped for the rest of the show’s run.

18.

A big focus of Ugly Betty Season 2 was Amanda’s search for her biological father, and her belief that it was Gene Simmons. However, it turns out he’s not her father, and the whole Amanda-looking-for-her-dad storyline kind of disappears.

Until the last moments of the second-to-last episode of the entire series two years later, when a quick moment reveals her dad to be Spencer Cannon. The storyline is hurriedly wrapped up in the series finale.

19.

And finally, much like the infamous dropped storyline of Gendry sailing away on a boat, Game of Thrones Season 3 featured a prominent storyline that completely disappeared after that season: that of Osha and Rickon Stark.

After their story diverged from Bran’s, the two characters completely disappeared until Season 6. It was like there wasn’t even a youngest Stark. Until he’s captured by Ramsay and killed. Which is kind of underwhelming, since most of us had forgotten he existed and/or assumed he was already dead.

What other random storylines were dropped then picked back up again? Let us know in the comments!

Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson Welcome Baby No. 2 Via Surrogate

Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson officially have a Leo on their hands. The exes officially welcomed their second child via surrogate, People reported on August 5. They also share daughter True Thompson, 4.

The child is a baby boy, though Kardashian hasn’t settled on a name quite yet.

Kardashian and Thompson broke up in January of this year after a tumultuous on-and-off relationship spanning nearly six years. Just before the final split, news broke that Thompson had fathered a son, Theo, with trainer Maralee Nichols, who was born in December 2021. He also shares five-year-old Prince with ex Jordan Craig.

The pair kept the news that they were expecting secret for several months, which was due partly to Kardashian’s desire to avoid public scrutiny following the dissolution of her and Thompson’s relationship.

“We can confirm True will have a sibling who was conceived in November,” a rep for Kardashian told People on July 13, three weeks before the baby was born. “Khloé is incredibly grateful to the extraordinary surrogate for such a beautiful blessing. We’d like to ask for kindness and privacy so that Khloé can focus on her family.”

“The baby was conceived via surrogate before it was revealed to Khloé and the public that Tristan was having a baby with someone else in December,” a source added at the time.

Hopefully we’ll be able to find out the baby boy’s name sooner rather than later—or maybe Khloé will take a page from younger sister Kylie Jenner’s book and withhold her baby’s name for six months (and counting).

Daredevil, Wong And More Marvel Characters Keep Appearing On Disney+ And She-Hulk’s Tatiana Maslany Has Strong Opinions On Their Parts

Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will finally mark Jennifer Walters’ arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though the newly gamma-powered hero will be joined by some familiar faces on her self-titled show. The series (which will be streamable with a Disney+ subscription) will also feature appearances from notable MCU players like Bruce Banner, Emil Blonsky and Wong. The show’s Comic-Con trailer also confirmed former Netflix hero Daredevil would be popping in at some point. The story is certainly going to be packed, and lead actress Tatiana Maslany has some strong opinions on the other characters’ parts.

It’s definitely not uncommon for new MCU projects to feature established characters in cameos or supporting roles. After all, the franchise is so vast at this point that it’s almost impossible for characters not to run into each other over the course of their respective adventures. In the case of She-Hulk, some fans may be concerned as to whether the presence of so many heroes will take the spotlight away from Jennifer Walters. But Tatiana Maslany doesn’t seem to mind their presence. The actress caught up with CinemaBlend’s Sean O’Connell at San Diego Comic-Con, where she discussed the inclusions of Daredevil and other Marvel alums in the show:

I don’t want to spoil anything because it’s already been spoiled, but [Charlie Cox’s] work in the show is so exciting. I think it’s so fun to see these characters that we know so well from one show or a series of movies, you know Benedict Wong and like, Tim Roth, and put them in this totally different tone and watch how the actors like move the shift and move them around and just adapt to this new tone, and I think it’s really exciting, it’s going to be fun for the fans to see.

One of the fun things about the MCU is seeing how the various characters interact with each other in productions that sport different tones. For instance, I was once incredibly intrigued to see how Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man was going to interact with the Avengers in more serious stories following his comedic solo flick in 2015. And if you’ve seen Captain America: Civil War or Avengers: Endgame, then you know that those interactions are downright delightful. I’m interested in seeing how characters from the more emotionally heavy corners of the cinematic universe mesh with She-Hulk’s tone.

Today’s best Disney+ deals

Disney (opens in new tab)

This is especially true when it comes to Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky a.k.a. Abomination, who (aside from a brief appearance in Shang-Chi) has not played a massive role in the MCU since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. The trailers of the upcoming show suggest that we’ll be getting a somewhat humorous performance from Roth, who had help from Mark Ruffalo when it came to getting his Marvel groove back.

It’ll also be wonderful to see Benedict Wong reprise his role as Wong, who has essentially become the Nick Fury of MCU Phase Four. He’s become a true mainstay of this universe and will surely be utilized to great effect in the Disney+ show. And of course, the confirmation of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil is exciting as well. She-Hulk director Kate Coiro broke her silence on his return, teasing that Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters are going to “match each other’s wits.” That meeting of the (legal) minds is sure to be entertaining for viewers.

The cameos and surprise appearances are sure to be fun but, at the end of the day, I’m most interested in meeting Jennifer Walters and seeing what she brings to this world of superheroes. The production has a capable lead in Tatiana Maslany, who can surely hold things down whether she is or isn’t in the presence of MCU vets.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is set to premiere (opens in new tab) on August 18th, joining the many other shows on Disney+.

‘Only Murders’ Cinematographer on Visual Motifs

“Only Murders in the Building” cinematographer Chris Teague got a chance to step behind the camera to direct two episodes of the Emmy-nominated Hulu series.

According to showrunner John Hoffman, the episodes had “two of the biggest visual challenges in them”: one dealt with a blackout and the other James Caverly’s character Theo going to Coney Island.

Here Teague talks about how he frames the show’s true-crime-obsessed heroes Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short). He also discusses how he approached his directorial episodes and going deep into the secret passageways of the Upper West Side residency the Arconia.

Can you talk about the visual transition from Season 1 to Season 2? Our leads have been established, but there’s a new crime to solve and new sets, so how did you approach that all?

It is a real challenge for any series to stay fresh in a second season. I think the way the show does it incredibly well is in how it explores characters that we’ve been introduced to in the first season, but it goes deeper with them and shows a different side to them.

Our showrunner John Hoffman worked hard to create new circumstances and new places to explore within our existing world that added new layers to the mystery.

Talk about your framing ideas when the trio is together versus alone.

We had so many different ideas for framing. One that we established in the first season and we tried to bring into Season 2 was this idea of when our trio, Mabel, Charles and Oliver, are really firing on all cylinders and putting the pieces together, we try to design a circular camera movement that showed their unity and the excitement of them breaking open a new clue. So that was fun to design.

There’s also the recurring theme of recording the podcast on the stage and Oliver’s apartment and there are several instances where we do a fun circular camera movement where we start with one character, then we introduce the second character and introduce the third.

At the end of Season 1, we start with Tim Kono speaking into the microphone and then we circle him, and we match cut to Charles and complete the circle on him as the monologue finishes. So that was one element we used to create this sense of energy, drive and unity among the hero characters.

What can you tell us about your lighting choices?

We get into the really fun stuff. The most fun and the most challenging sets to work in were the sort of secret passageways in the back of the Arconia. We talked about how this space should look and feel. For those, we wanted that to feel as real and claustrophobic as possible. So we squished the passageways down. There’s almost nowhere to hide lights in that space. We created cracks and pockets sneaking light into the plasterwork. That gave us opportunities to push the ambient light through.

You talked about new sets and one we see is Bunny’s apartment.

From a cinematography standpoint, it was so great to work in because there are all these different layers, hallways and little nooks and crannies. That gave lighting opportunities for depth, texture and color. We also had stained glass to work with, it allows you to change up the look throughout the season and vary things. We got to do a very cool noir ShadowPlay effect on the ceiling.

You also got to direct two episodes, seven and eight, right?

John told me he was going to give me the episodes that had some of the biggest visual challenges in them. One was going to take place during the blackout, and the other was going to take place on Coney Island and focus on Theo.

How did you approach the blackout in episode eight?

I worked with the team and we looked at all the different ways we’ve seen that look represented in film. One of the main things we determined was where the direction of light is coming from — where you typically don’t expect it to.

We had to give the impression that there are no lights on. So I was very careful in terms of what we were framing in every shot to give us something that looked like a beautiful frame and something that would look good with the lights off. That’s where my background as a cinematographer came in handy.

Mary Ellin Barrett, Daughter and Defender of Irving Berlin, Dies at 95

In the East River, near Mary Ellin’s penthouse home, her father had once, at 8 years old, nearly drowned; when rescued, he was found still clutching the pennies he had earned that day selling newspapers.

He often seemed a “shaky, uncertain man,” Ms. Barrett wrote — drumming his fingers, molding the inside of dinner rolls into compact balls, smoking too many cigarettes, chewing too much gum, jumping when the telephone rang, fiddling with his piano.

Yet out came hit after hit after hit; between his 20s and his 60s, he wrote about 1,500 songs.

Ms. Barrett came to see her father’s drive as the product of anxiety and toughness that lingered from a ghetto childhood. He was “the street fighter,” she wrote, “not noisy and brawling but quiet, dogged,” never shaking the sense that he acted “with his back against the wall, writing, composing, negotiating his way out of a corner.”

Mary Ellin Berlin, who was born on Nov. 25, 1926, in Manhattan, grew up in a different universe. Her girlhood memories included dinner parties with the Astaires, the Goldwyns, the Capras and Somerset Maugham, who once lay on the floor, balanced a glass of water on his forehead and stood up without spilling a drop.

Though she sometimes had to chase her father for attention and felt alienated by the fame of her parents — her mother, Ellin Mackay, was an heiress and a popular novelist — Mary Ellin felt less resentment than enchantment with her good fortune. When she relentlessly invited people to the family’s theater house seats for her father’s 1946 Broadway megahit, “Annie Get Your Gun,” one annoyed friend told her to knock it off.

Jays’ miscues prove costly, Twins win 6-5 in 10th

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nick Gordon hit a three-run homer and scored in the 10th inning for Minnesota after a pair of miscues by Toronto catcher Danny Jansen, giving the Twins a 6-5 win over the Blue Jays on Friday night.

Gordon, who had three hits in the game, was the automatic runner to start the bottom of the 10th. Jordan Romano (3-3) struck out Jake Cave on a low slider that got past Jansen, who threw wildly to first, allowing Cave to reach and moving Gordon to third. Tim Beckham hit a grounder to third baseman Matt Chapman, who threw home to get Gordon trying to score.

Michael Fulmer (4-4) left the bases loaded in the top of the 10th in his second appearance for the Twins since being acquired from Detroit.

The Blue Jays rallied in the ninth against new Minnesota closer Jorge López, another trade deadline acquisition who was an All-Star for Baltimore. Bo Bichette and Danny Jansen singled before Raimel Tapia blooped a two-out single into shallow center field.

Making his Minnesota debut, Tyler Mahle became the first Twins starter to finish six innings since Sonny Gray went six against Detroit on July 24. Mahle allowed one hit through the first four innings before giving up homers to Matt Chapman, Santiago Espinal and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a two-run blast to center in the sixth.

Mahle, acquired at the deadline from the Cincinnati Reds for three prospects, allowed four runs and five hits.

Gordon’s fifth homer of the season capped a four-run fourth against former Twins starter José Berríos, who gave up five runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Not everything is perfect as Teresa Giudice, 50, prepares to walk down the aisle. A new report claims that her brother Joe Gorga, 42, and his wife (and former Teresa BFF Melissa Gorga), 43, won’t be attending the nuptials. A source told Page Six that while “they were invited,” the married couple is declining the invitation to the wedding of Joe’s only sibling. “There was a very tense Housewives finale filmed earlier this week,” the source offered by way of explanation, though no other details were given.

Teresa’s social media pics of her joint bachelor/bachelorette party with Luis did not include pics of Joe and Melissa. But trouble had been brewing for a while. The Real Housewives of New Jersey castmates fell out earlier this year, with Melissa admitting she had “no guilt” over the loss of her previously fast friendship with Teresa.

“I truly feel like I have hit every avenue,” Melissa told the Betches’ Mention It All podcast in May. “I have no guilt.” She also said she felt “free” after they came to an understanding during the RHONJ Season 12 reunion. “It’s OK to say that we don’t have the best relationship and I don’t feel guilty saying that because I tried really hard and know that I tried hard — for my in-laws and for Joe,” she said. Teresa told Melissa that they are “not close,” and Melisaa then further dug in the knife. “Let’s stop faking like we have a relationship [then] because you’ve proved to everyone that we don’t.”

It didn’t help that Teresa also lashed out at her brother during the reunion episode taping, causing him to walk off the set, saying, “you gotta stop putting me down” and “act like a sister.” Teresa later said she would “take the blame” and asserted that she “adores” her brother, but based on the latest report, that doesn’t appear to be enough to heal the rift.

Still, the bride appears to be happy ahead of her wedding. She was seen kissing fiancé Luis Ruelas as the two arrived for their rehearsal at the Park Chateau Estate in East Brunswick, New Jersey, on Friday, August 5.

LeBron James banned from ‘MultiVersus’ tournament at Evo 2022

If you’re planning this weekend to tune into Evo — the fighting game bonanza co-owned by Sony that takes place annually in Las Vegas — don’t expect to see LeBron James.

Admittedly, nobody really had their hopes up on that front until Warner Bros. released the beta version of “MultiVersus” last week, a crossover fighting game that features popular fictional characters from the studio’s extensive list of IPs like Batman, Arya Stark and — yes — LeBron James, a basketball player so talented he can’t be real. In the game, you play as the cartoon version of the Los Angeles Lakers star from “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

‘The Take’: ‘Batgirl’ Shocker, Will Smith’s Apology Video

This week, “The Take” welcomes special guest host Marc Malkin, Variety‘s senior culture and events editor and host of the “Just for Variety” podcast, to break down the biggest stories in the entertainment business.

“Batgirl” being scrapped by Warner Bros. sent shockwaves throughout the industry with an unprecedented move that has left the film’s director’s “shocked” and “saddened.” The cancellation of the $90 million film, which now will not be released theatrically or on any streaming platform despite being wrapped and in post-production, comes after the Warner Bros. Discovery merger and the long-expected news that HBO Max and Discovery Plus will merge into one mega streaming service.

“We’re not going to launch a movie until it’s ready,” David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said on an earnings call. “We’re not going to launch a movie to make a quarter and we’re not going to put a movie out unless we believe in it.”

In wouldn’t be a normal week in Hollywood without ample controversy, so aside from the “Batgirl” shocker, Will Smith released an apology video, four months after his “slap heard around the world” at the Oscars. In his mea culpa, Smith says he has been working on his own healing and reached out to Chris Rock, who he says is not ready to talk yet.

“The View” is always creating drama, and this week was no exception. The hit daytime talker announced two new co-hosts who will fill the conservative seat left vacant by Meghan McCain. Former Trump staffer Alyssa Farah Griffin and longtime “View” contributor Ana Navarro will both join the show in Season 26 alongside Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines.

Meanwhile, Brad Pitt is having the time of his life promoting his new film “Bullet Train,” making headlines for wearing a skirt and hamming it up on red carpets around the world at the film’s premieres. On “The Take,” Malkin shares his red carpet conversation with Pitt.

Hosted by Variety chief correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister and senior awards editor Clayton Davis, Variety‘s “The Take,” presented by Apple TV+, is a weekly series that navigates the week’s top stories from entertainment, pop culture and media, while providing expert analysis and exclusive insight on what’s buzzing in Hollywood. Filmed in Variety‘s state-of-the-art studio in Los Angeles, new episodes are released on Fridays on Variety.com, YouTube and social media.

Disney Screens Mija Documentary for Free Before Oscar Qualifying Run

Audiences will get a chance to see Disney’s inaugural feature documentary for free in select theaters during a one-week period beginning Aug. 5.

“Mija,” which follows two daughters of undocumented immigrants navigating the music industry, will get its Academy Award qualifying run later in the month before debuting on Disney+ on Sept. 16.

“We weren’t able to get a rating in time for our planned theatrical, so our actual qualifying run is shifting a bit,” says Marjon Javadi, VP of Documentary Film & Docuseries for Disney Original Documentary, a part of Disney Branded Television. “But rather than pushing our entire release plans, we decided simply to keep our current releases and open them to the public. This film is a love letter to immigrants, their children and the power of a dream.”

The debut feature of Mexican American filmmaker Isabel Castro, “Mija,” premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. In March, Disney Original Documentary acquired worldwide rights to 88-minute film.

“As we are looking to build out Disney Original Documentary, we’ve been very keen on finding authentic narratives, character-driven storytelling, and also filmmakers that bring in an approach and style to their work,” says Javadi. “Mija” is such an authentic portrayal of what it means to be a first-generation kid and to pursue your dreams and balance those dreams while also caring for your family. The music element really spoke to us as well.”

A four-time Emmy nominated filmmaker, Castro began working on “Mija” in 2019 and continued to film throughout the pandemic.

“As a teenager, I felt like there was a shortage of stories about what it meant to come of age as an immigrant or as the child of immigrants in the United States,” says Castro. “I wanted to tell the kind of story I craved myself, as a Mexican immigrant when I was figuring out my identity, family, and community.”

Disney Original Documentary has two high-profile docus in production: Ron Howard’s untitled Jim Henson film and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and the Years That Made His Legend,” directed by R.J. Cutler and David Furnish.

“Our goal is to build global empathy through authentic storytelling and to embrace the creative nonfiction form,” says Javadi. “We want to show real-life journeys and real-life stories about inspiration and hope.”

“Mija” played the festival circuit throughout the spring, including runs at True/False Film Festival, Miami Film Festival, and CPH: DOX. Castro says she is looking forward to the film’s debut on Disney+ in September.

“To have this film, which is a film about being the daughter of immigrants, live on Disney’s platform feels like my biggest professional and personal achievement,” says Castro. “To have the film’s themes and topics reach viewers worldwide is incredible and will hopefully prompt conversation about what the experience means.”

Last year, Disney Original Documentary qualified their first title, the docu short “Sophie & the Baron,” for Oscar consideration. The film made the documentary short shortlist. Tickets to “Mija” will be free in select theaters in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

“The way to think about it is that our films are serving an adult audience, but they are family-friendly,” says Javadi. “How we frame it is, if your four-year-old walks into a room, you don’t need to shut (the doc) off. So there are themes and parameters that we really work with as Disney to make it family-friendly. But that doesn’t mean you need to watch it with your five-year-old; it just means if your five-year-old is in the room, there’s not a faux pas.”

With New Cast Members Announced, Speculation Begins on which Supes shall Appear in ‘The Boys’ Season 4

Following the announcement of Cameron Crovetti becoming a series regular, as well as Valorie Curry and Susan Heywards involvement in the upcoming fourth season of The Boys, many fans have been wondering who else will join the show as a Supe.  Similar to Crovetti, Curry and Heywards will be joining as original characters Firecracker and Sister Sage respectively.  As a result, this has left some wondering whether or not they will be filling in roles from characters in the comics, and to that extent which Supe from the comic would appear in the show.

It wouldn’t be the first time new characters introduced in the show would act as replacements for characters from the comic.  Notably, Translucent was created for the show to take the place of Jack from Jupiter, and Drummer Boy was changed from the comics to become Supersonic in the show.  Given the few religious elements within the show, Sister Sage could be the show’s equivalent of Holy Mary, a woman whom Drummer Boy had an affair with.  Still, it’s interesting to discuss the possibilities of who could appear, and how it would fit into the story.

Courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment

With that said, one of the characters from the comics that could show up as the embodiment of religion being corrupted for profit would be Oh Father, a leader of a group known as ‘Sidekicks 12’, comprising primarily of young Supes, whom Oh Father sexually abused on an almost regular basis.  It could very well be possible that the character could be introduced as the new major antagonist of this season, similar to Stormfront and Soldier Boy of the previous seasons.  It would make sense as well, as in the comics, Oh Father is considered one of the most powerful and influential Supes, although not quite to the extent of Homelander.  Considering Homelander’s image is beginning to falter in the overall publics eye, and he is slowly losing control of the Seven, having figure like Oh Father come in would certainly create an interesting dynamic.  Given what Kripke has talked about with Season 4’s themes focusing on politics, it’d be more than likely that Oh Father would become an ally to Homelander, given the more right-wing esque behavior of Homelander’s side.  That said, in terms of power set, not much of Oh Father’s abilities were put on display in the comics, with the only real abilities seen being enhanced agility, strength, durability, and flight.  Still, much like Soldier Boy, it is possible that his powerset could be enhanced or changed to match the themes and ideas of Season 4.

Courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment

Another Supe from the comics that many have long hoped would appear is Robert Vernon, aka Tek Knight.  As could be guessed, Tek Knight is a parody of the popular Armored Avenger, Iron Man, albeit with a caveat of a heavy sex addiction.  As a result, he has a unique place in the Boys as a Supe who doesn’t have powers, and has become something of a fan favorite from the comics.  That said, it’s uncertain exactly how that would translate to the show, which is generally more down to earth when compared to the comic.  Perhaps he takes a special V Formula to enhance his durability as he takes flight in his suit of armor.  It could also be possible that, given the fact that he is rich, perhaps he could be a top contributor to Vought, perhaps even being the one creating formulas for Temp V.  While possible for him to appear in Season 4, how his presence would tie into the themes of the show is a bit more uncertain.  Perhaps he could start off as a loyal Vought employee, who would become jaded from his work after Homelander’s take over, showing that there are people between the two sides of Homelander and Starlight, that don’t subscribe themselves to one or the other, and are simply trying to do what is either right for themselves, or society as a whole, especially considering Kripke’s statement that people within both groups aren’t entirely innocent.

Courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment

Perhaps one of the most unique choices to include for the show, especially in terms of challenging Butcher’s views of Supes, would be the inclusion of the group Super Duper.  In the context of the comics, Super Duper is among the most pure-hearted people within the comics, with most of their deeds being small tasks on a neighborhood level.  While this does come from their relatively weak powerset, it offers a refreshing reprive from the comic’s unrelentingly negative take on most Supes.  Still, after their introduction, it wasn’t long before we’d see that negativity reer it’s ugly head again with Malchemical’s introduction.

Courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment

Malchemical is easily one of the most deplorable villains in the comic, given his frequent abuse of each member of Super Duper, resulting in Hughie confronting him as he is surveilling them.  Unlike most other Supes as well, Malchemical has one of the most versitile power sets in the comic, being able to shapeshift into practically anything.  His inclusion would likely make him one of the most formidable adversaries of the Boys in the show, as his powerset could allow him to blend into a crowd, while also causing many heavy casualties, which given the heavy political divide forming in the show, could likely create incidents which would go to benefit Homelander’s cause.

Of course, it’s all entirely possible that a new character will be created to fill in the role of the new Supe antagonist left by Soldier Boy at the end of Season 3.  Still, regardless of what choices are made, it’s clear that any Supe included in Season 4 will be in service of the themes and story that Kripke and crew will set out to tell, and given the high quality of the previous three seasons, it’s safe to say no matter the Supe included, The Boys will still be one of the best shows to watch.

Matt Smith thinks he has “slightly too much” sex in House of the Dragon

For better or worse, Game of Thrones quickly made waves with its graphic sexual content and nudity. Throughout its eight-season run, the HBO series came under fire for its sexual violence toward women. When House of the Dragon was announced, it was thought that the prequel series might tone down the sex, but it would seem that’s not the case.

Extended House of the Dragon Comic-Con trailer will be released tomorrow during Shark Week

While speaking with Rolling Stone, House of the Dragon star Matt Smith implied that there’s plenty of sex to be had in the series, perhaps even too much.

You do find yourself asking, ‘Do we need another sex scene?’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, we do.’ I guess you have to ask yourself: ‘What are you doing? Are you representing the books, or are you diluting the books to represent the time [we’re living in]?’ And I actually think it’s your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, as they were written.

When asked if his character, Prince Daemon Targaryen, had his share of sex scenes in House of the Dragon, Matt Smith responded with a laugh, “Yeah — slightly too much, if you ask me.” As for his character, Smith described Daemon as “Sort of an outsider. He’s not black and white, there are shades of grey with him, which is what interested me about him. And his relationship with his brother is really interesting. It was a joy working with Paddy Considine, who I’ve admired for so long, and Rhys Ifans.” While House of the Dragon may feature “slightly too much” sex, writer and executive producer Sarah Hess told Vanity Fair that sexual violence won’t be a part of it. “I’d like to clarify that we do not depict sexual violence in the show,” Hess said. “We handle one instance off-screen, and instead show the aftermath and impact on the victim and the mother of the perpetrator.“

Why the first Game of Thrones prequel series was shelved

House of the Dragon is set hundreds of years before the original series and is based upon George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a Targaryen history book which chronicles the history of House Targaryen, starting off with “Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and [going on] to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold the throne, all the way up to the civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, that nearly tore their dynasty apart.” House of the Dragon will debut on HBO on August 21st.

James Gunn Assures Fans Peacemaker Is Safe at HBO Max

Showrunner James Gunn went on Twitter to assure viewers that Season 2 of Peacemaker is safe from the chopping block.

Following reports of Warner Bros. Discovery’s executive decision to cancel the release of Batgirl and that HBO Max may be moving away from scripted TV content, viewers took to social media to voice their concerns to Gunn about the fate of the HBO Max series, Peacemaker.

“Is Peacemaker safe?” asked @TomMCJL on Twitter, to which Gunn replied, “Yes, guys, calm down.” Gunn then posted a picture of actress Jennifer Holland, who plays Emilia Harcourt, having lunch on set, to reassure fan that Season 2 is still in production. HBO Max renewed the series for a second season in February.

Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max this past January, and was an instant hit for the streaming app. A spin-off of Gunn’s 2021’s Suicide Squad, Peacemaker is the first DC Extended Universe (DCEU) TV series. Set after the events of the film, the show follows Peacemaker (John Cena), an unhinged vigilante who fights for peace at any cost, no matter the body count. Business Insider described Peacemaker as “the biggest streaming TV series in the world right now.” Using data from Parrot Analytics, Peacemaker was the most in-demand streaming series upon its release, surpassing Netflix’s The Witcher and Disney+’s The Book of Bobba Fett and was 69.5 times more in demand than the average series.

Matt Smith: ‘Morbius’ Flop Doesn’t Bother Me

Matt Smith has bigger things to worry about than the plethora of memes that the comic book flop inspired.

For every hit movie that Hollywood releases, there’s bound to be a flop. Disappointing films are just a reality of the entertainment industry, and people who work on them quickly develop thick skins about the process. But while a studio making the occasional box office bomb is par for the course, sometimes a film fails so spectacularly that it shocks even the most seasoned industry veterans.

This year, that film was “Morbius.”

The Jared Leto vehicle pulled off the impressive feat of bombing at the box office twice in the same year. After its catastrophic initial release led to an influx of Internet memes making fun of the film, Sony appeared to mistake that mockery for genuine enthusiasm and released the film again. The second release was even less impressive, grossing less than $300 per screen on average. Altogether, the film grossed just north of $163 million globally — low for a Sony Marvel tentpole when you look at the $1.9 billion-plus gross of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” even in a pandemic world.

One would think a failure like “Morbius” would take a toll on the egos of the film’s cast. But Matt Smith, who played Morbius’ (Jared Leto) vampire brother Milo, isn’t too upset about it. The actor recently spoke to Rolling Stone UK about how he doesn’t get too worked up about the results of his films.

“Yeah, it was thrown under the bus,” Smith said. “But you just have to roll with it. What else are you gonna do? It’s a film, at the end of the day, we’re not saving lives. For whatever reason, it didn’t quite work out and… It is what it is.”

It’s a good thing that Smith isn’t worried about the response to “Morbius,” because critics weren’t particularly kind to it either: In her review of the film, IndieWire’s Kate Erbland wrote: “Even the most basic elements of the film are incomprehensible. Michael has all the trappings of a bad guy — this is the kind of guy who has a massive chamber of bats in the middle of his lab, both for decor and research — but by the time he gifts yet another origami animal to someone he cares about, you’ll have to wonder, this dude is a villain? (Leto, who notoriously immerses himself in his work, could seemingly find little here, his Michael is somehow both confounding and very boring.)”

Jennifer Lopez Showed Off Her Abs in the Bra and Skirt Set of Our Dreams—See the Pic

Jennifer Lopez is continuing her bid for the most stylish celeb of the summer.

After her honeymoon fashion show in France, the newly married singer has taken her impeccable wardrobe to Italy—and her latest look may be the best one yet. On August 1, Lopez was photographed traipsing around Capri wearing a blue and white plaid Tory Burch bra and maxi skirt. If the pattern looks familiar, it’s because Jennifer Lawrence was recently spotted in a very similar look, opting for a corset-style dress from the same collection while bopping around New York City.

But back to Jennifer Lopez. The star reportedly wore the outfit for a photo shoot, pairing the summer set with a pair of flip-flops and pink cat-eye glasses with her hair worn straight with face-framing curtain bangs.

BACKGRID

If you’re looking to purchase the set for yourself, you’re in luck. The Tory Burch ensemble is still available…if you’re ready to drop a little coin. The Picnic Plaid Bra Top currently retails for $298 on the Tory Burch website, while the skirt will set you back $698. Meanwhile, if Lawrence’s chill corset dress is more your speed, you’ll be spending $1,198.

Not only did Lopez turn 53 years old on July 24, but she’s also been celebrating her recent nuptials with husband Ben Affleck. “Last night we flew to Vegas, stood in line for a license with four other couples, all making the same journey to the wedding capital of the world,” Lopez shared of the intimate ceremony in her “On the JLo” newsletter. The moment, Lopez wrote, was “exactly what we wanted.”

While Jennifer Lopez’s French honeymoon looks were all about feminine dresses in bold colors and patterns, her Italian wardrobe seems to be focused on flattering silhouettes that show off her hard-earned abs. This week, Lopez was also photographed on a yacht wearing a sultry black look that could either be an LBD with a perfectly placed ab cutout or a bikini that was styled with a high-waisted skirt. Either way, it’s working for her and we can’t wait to see what she wears next.

10 Raindance Film Festival Alumni You Might Already Know

Over the last 30 years, Raindance Film Festival has screened over a thousand films by a thousand filmmakers. Upon their debuts at Raindance, many filmmakers have gone on to do notable work in mainstream media. Let’s take a look back at some of the Raindance alumni that you might already know.

1) Daniel Myrick, Director

Daniel Myrick is best known for co-directing the 1999 horror film The Blair Witch Project with Eduardo Sánchez. The film made its UK debut at the Raindance Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Foreign Film (English Language). The Blair Witch Project catalysed a new phenomenon in film that engages audiences on a personal level through a “home movie” film format.

The “found-footage” genre of the film depicted a presentation style that made the film more realistic and thus more terrifying, which audiences were enthralled by. At the time of release, this low-budget film format was rudimentary, and so it had the ability to tap into the “true story” appeal, sparking rumours about the historical and factual nature of the film. The film went on to receive various accolades, including the Cannes Film Festival Award of the Youth, the Film Independent Spirit Award and the Online Film Critics Society Award for Top Ten Films of the Year, to name a few.

2) Craig Foster, Documentary Filmmaker

Craig Foster, like many others on this list, had his start at Raindance, where he debuted The Great Dance: A Hunter’s Story in 2000. He went on to direct and produce various successful film projects including My Hunter’s Heart (2010), Into the Dragon’s Lair (2010) and Dragons Feast (2014).

Recently in 2021, Craig Foster won an Academy Award and BAFTA for the Netflix Original Documentary Film My Octopus Teacher (2020). The critically-acclaimed film explores the filmmaker’s unusual friendship with an octopus in a kelp forest in South Africa. Filmed over the course of a year, the intimate interactions tell a touching story of a depressed and lonely man’s journey to recovery.

3) Emily Greenwood, Director / Writer / Editor

Prior to her editorial work on various commercial successes, Emily Greenwood made a number of short films, one of which was nominated for the Best Digital Film at Raindance and featured on its Best of the Fest DVD.

The Button (2002) was a screenplay written and directed by Greenwood about a man who becomes paranoid about a button on his hotel room wall. The film was featured as part of Raindance’s 10th Anniversary Film Festival.

Since her work at Raindance, Greenwood has gone on receive credits as digital online editor in the James Bond films Spectre (2015) and Skyfall (2012), Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), Les Misérables (2012), Wuthering Heights (2011), The Iron Lady (2011) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) amongst others.

Greenwood is the recipient of various film festival awards and was featured in MovieScope’s 2013 edition of “Women in Film”.

4) Trey Parker, Writer / Producer / Director

Before he co-created South Park and The Book of Mormon with Matt Stone, Trey Parker screened their film Cannibal!: the Musical (then known as Alferd Packer: the Musical) at the very first Raindance Film Festival in 1994! With a script co-written by Matt Stone, the film is a black comedy musical that tells the story of the only survivor of a doomed mining expedition and his newfound desire for human flesh. Trey Parker stars as miner-turned-cannibal Alferd Packer. The Raindance festival archives from that year state that “Everyone who meets Trey knows he’s going to be huge. He stays for four days, during which time approximately five dozen people buy him drinks and food.”

Alongside Matt Sloane, Parker has risen to success with South Park and The Book of Mormon, even winning an Oscar for Best Original Song for South Park’s “Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.” The animated show has been running since 1997 and has won multiple Primetime Emmys. Parker then went on to co-write The Book of Mormon musical with Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. The musical was first staged in 2011 and won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Director.

5) Kevin Willmott, Director / Screenwriter

Kevin Willmott is a director whose work was shown at Raindance Film Festival and has gone on to be greatly successful in the field. He first screened his film, Ninth Street, at Raindance in 1998. Now, he boasts an impressive resume including such films as Da 5 Bloods (2020) and C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America (2004), which looks at what would have happened if the South had won the war. Willmott’s work as a screenwriter has been perhaps most notably featured in BlacKkKlansman (2018). He shares an Oscar for the script with Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, and Spike Lee. The movie received massive praise from critics and audiences for its humour and honest portrayal of the cultural and institutional racism that remains in America.

6) Gareth Edwards – Director

Rogue One was the second-highest grossing film in 2016 and the 20th-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide. The film followed the untold Star Wars story of how the blueprints to the Death Star were obtained and its visual effects and sound mixing earned it two Academy Award nominations. Director Gareth Edwards got his start at Raindance in 1996 with his film Arrivals, a monster movie set on the night of a violent meteor shower.

Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla film also shows his expertise in building monster movies and adventure films and was a massive box office hit, prompting the release of two sequels. Presently, Edwards has won a Primetime Emmy, a BAFTA award, and 2 British Independent Film awards. He also holds the title of the only person to have directed both a Godzilla and Star Wars film.

7) Kate Herron, Director / Writer / Producer

Loki (2021) and Sex Education (2019) are both series that have seen widely acclaimed reception in recent times, both having been nominated for and won various awards. However, before directing and producing streaming successes, Kate Herron began her career working on shorts. In 2017, she featured a 5-minute short entitled Smear at the 25th Raindance Film Festival. Smear follows Chloe who thinks she’s going in for a routine test but things do not go as planned. Herron wrote this film to explore pap-smear anxiety in the hopes that the film will encourage more women to go for cervical cancer screenings.

Since her stint at Raindance, Herron has been nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) for Loki, as well as received numerous other accolades from the Rolling Stones, British GQ, The Guardian and Variety.

8) Baran bo Odar, Director

Dark is Netflix’s first German-language original series and has received critical acclaim for its complicated narrative and superb acting and tone of the show. The show tells the story of a time-travel mystery involving the disappearance of local children spanning from the late 19th century to 2053. The science-fiction thriller was directed by Raindance alum Baran bo Odar, who received a Grimme-Preis, Germany’s most prestigious television award, for Dark season 1.

Bo Odar has also been nominated for a German Film Award for Best Fiction Feature Film and Best Screenplay for Who Am I – No System is Safe, a techno-thriller about a computer hacker group in Berlin. He screened his 60-minute film Under the Sun at the 2006 Raindance festival, which tells the story of misfit Viktor taking drastic measures to feel accepted. The film was nominated for Best Debut Feature at Raindance Film Festival.

9) Ildiko Enyedi – Director / Writer

Ildikó Enyedi is a Hungarian film director and screenplay writer most well known for her film On Body and Soul (2017). This film revolves around workers at a slaughterhouse who find that they can communicate with each other via their dreams. It went on to win the Golden Bear at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for a Foreign Language Academy Award. Enyedi screened her film, Simon Magus, at Raindance 1999. Simon Magus tells the story of a psychic called by the Parisian police when they are faced with a crime they can’t solve.

Enyedi’s success has earned her multiple awards at the Berlin International Film Festival and a nomination for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. She has directed eight feature films.

10) Christopher Nolan, Director / Producer / Screenwriter

11-time Academy Award winner best known for The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005-2012), Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014) and Dunkirk (2017), Christopher Nolan, debuted his breakthrough film Memento for the first time in the UK at Raindance Film Festival in 2000. He was also a recipient of the Filmmaker in Residence Award at Raindance that same year.

20 years later, the time-bending mystery thriller continues to be a cult classic that paves the way for detailed non-linear storytelling and cerebral dives. Memento was a unique film for its time, but has gone on to define Nolan’s unconventional and distinct filmmaking technique. The film gained widespread recognition, winning Nolan his first Academy Award and laying the foundation for the rest of his career.

Partition: My journey to the ‘place no-one spoke of’

In March 2021, Sparsh was in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital. On the morning of the journey to his ancestral home, more than 100km (60 miles) away, he got up early. He wore a traditional blue salwar kameez and put on a white turban, wound in a special way. He had seen a picture of Ishar’s father – his great-grandfather – and wanted to go back to his village looking like him. He got into a taxi with two friends, and they set off. Sitting in the back seat, Sparsh was clutching a map given to him by his grandfather, sketched from old memories.

Anne Heche was involved in a car crash that left her severely burned in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles, California, on Friday, August 5, TMZ reports.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirms to Us Weekly that the driver, who they would not identify, was traveling eastbound on Preston Way at a high rate of speed. The vehicle ran off the road when it entered the intersection of Preston and Walgrove and collided with a residence on the 1700 block of Walgrove.

Per the LAPD, the vehicle was engulfed in flames and the driver received severe burns. The driver was then transported to a local hospital by LAFD paramedics. In photos taken by TMZ, the individual can be seen wearing charred clothes as they’re taken away on a stretcher and covered in a white cloth.

Alex Jones Trial: Jury Awards $45.2 Million to Sandy Hook Family

UPDATED: A Texas jury on Friday ordered Alex Jones, founder of fringe media outlet Infowars, to pay $45.2 million in punitive damages to the parents of a 6-year-old who was murdered in the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School after he had denied that the shooting was real and accused the child’s parents of participating in a government hoax.

The additional award comes after Jones was ordered to pay $4.1 million in compensatory damages on Thursday. The judge also declared on Friday that she will not prevent the parents’ lawyers from giving Jones’ text messages — which were accidentally sent to them during the trial — to law enforcement and the Jan. 6 committee.

Jones had claimed the Sandy Hook shooting — in which 20 children and six adults were killed — was a “giant hoax” perpetrated by “crisis actors,” and that “no one died” in the massacre. He was sued for defamation by the child’s parents, Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, after he accused them of being part of a government “false flag” operation to fake the shooting in Newtown, Conn., supposedly to rouse public opinion in favor of gun control.

Jones also faces judgments in two other cases in which he was sued by parents of Sandy Hook victims after losing the lawsuits by default last year for failing to comply with court orders for documents and testimony.

In a statement, Mark Bankston, the attorney representing the parents, said that his clients “are thrilled with the result and look forward to putting Mr. Jones’ money to good use. Mr. Jones on the other hand will not sleep easy tonight. With punitive damages still to be decided and multiple additional defamation lawsuits pending, it is clear that Mr Jones’ time on the American stage is finally coming to an end.”

Meanwhile, Jones called the decision the “a major victory for truth” in a video posted Thursday to Infowars. That’s because, according to the far-right figure, the damages the jury awarded were far less than the $150 million that the couple had sought in the suit. “They thought they would shut us down. But that jury understood the truth and resisted the propaganda,” Jones said. He also urged his followers to buy products — like T-shirts, books and dietary supplements — from his website, claiming his company needs financial support to keep operating because “we are so broke.”

Last week, Free Speech Systems filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, revealing that Infowars’ owners have taken out more than $62 million from the business. Jones and Free Speech Systems have spent more than $15 million in legal fees and costs on the Sandy Hook lawsuits to date, according to court documents.

During the Texas trial, Jones’ lawyers had accidentally sent his mobile phone records — which Jones had denied existed — to Bankston, the family’s legal counsel. (The judge in the case denied the request by Jones’ attorneys to declare a mistrial over their error.) Bankston said later that the Jan. 6 House select committee investigating the pro-Trump attack on the U.S. Capitol had requested Jones’ phone records and that he was prepared to turn them over.

Jones, 48, is “almost certainly the most prolific conspiracy theorist in contemporary America,” according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. In 2018, YouTube, Facebook, Spotify and Apple Podcasts banned Jones from their platforms, citing violations of their hate-speech policies.

In addition to his noxious lies about Sandy Hook, Jones has denied that Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, saying in December of that year, “We will never back down to the Satanic pedophile, globalist New World Order and their walking-dead reanimated corpse Joe Biden, and we will never recognize him.” He also has accused the U.S. government of orchestrating the 9/11 attacks; said “leftist Jews” want to create conflict by “dress[ing] up as Nazis”; and falsely said President Obama “is al-Qaeda.”

Peter Jackson: Amazon ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series Snubbed Me

While the opportunity to collaborate with Amazon fell through, Jackson is looking forward to watching the show as a “neutral viewer.”

To many, the name Peter Jackson is almost as synonymous with the “Lord of the Rings” franchise as J.R.R. Tolkien. The Oscar-winning director revolutionized genre filmmaking with his original trilogy of “Lord of the Rings” films before famously (or infamously) returning to the franchise to direct three films based on Tolkien’s prequel “The Hobbit.”

So when Amazon announced that it had closed a record-breaking deal to produce “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” a new series inspired by Tolkien’s mythology-expanding appendices to his original books, many fans found it hard to imagine a cinematic portrayal of the Middle Earth without Jackson at the helm. As it turns out, they almost didn’t have to.

Appearing on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Jackson revealed that he was asked to participate in the show and was open to the idea. But when he asked Amazon to send him the scripts, they never got back to him.

“They asked me if I wanted to [be] involved – [writer-producer Fran Walsh] and I – and I said, ‘That’s an impossible question to answer without seeing a script,’” Jackson said. “So they said, ‘As soon as we get the first couple scripts, we’ll send them to you.’ And the scripts never showed up. That’s the last thing I heard, which is fine. No complaints at all.”

In a statement provided to THR, Amazon responded to Jackson’s comments by citing an “obligation” to differentiate themselves from Jackson’s films. IndieWire has reached out to the series’ reps for additional comment.

“In pursuing the rights for our show, we were obligated to keep the series distinct and separate from the films,” a spokesperson for the company said. “We have the utmost respect for Peter Jackson and ‘The Lord of The Rings’ films and are thrilled that he is looking forward to watching ‘The Rings of Power.’”

Despite the confusion, Jackson wishes the series all the best and plans to enthusiastically watch it.

“I’ll be watching it,” Jackson said. “I’m not the sort of guy who wishes ill will. Filmmaking is hard enough. If somebody makes a good film or TV show, it’s something to celebrate. The one thing I am looking forward to is actually seeing it as a perfectly neutral viewer.”

Review: Calvin Harris’ ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2’

Five years ago, DJ and producer Calvin Harris released Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, an All-Star Weekend for pop-EDM: There was Frank Ocean teaming up with Migos on the breezy “Slide,” and Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams being flanked by Big Sean on the hiccuping “Feels.” It was part flex of Harris’ collaborator-wrangling muscle, part party record, part way for Harris to indulge in his love of the era where disco and funk commingled, and it spawned enough hit singles that a sequel was inevitable.

The second entry in the Funk Wav Bounces series has a mostly new cast of characters — Migos’ Offset returns, as do Williams and Snoop Dogg — while retaining its inner spirit of an A-list gathering where the guests are invited to do their thing and head for the exits. It’s decidedly, almost refreshingly, unambitious for the most part, with most of its songs being underpinned by plush, gently bobbing grooves made to accompany bottle-service summertime lounging.

Boldfaced names from pop and hip-hop mix effortlessly, the on-record equivalent of paparazzi photo ops: British MC Stefflon Don and hyperactive New Jersey rapper Coi Leray giggle about their sexual prowess alongside R&B dynamo Chloë over the ebb-and-flow groove of “Women of the Year”; hip-hop hero Snoop Dogg welcomes Atlanta upstart Latto to the A-list on the drowsy “Live My Best Life”; dance-floor queen Dua Lipa and shapeshifting MC Young Thug dissemble the art of seduction on “Potion.” Justin Timberlake tries to recapture the “next Michael Jackson” buzz he had early in his career on the raucous two-parter “Stay With Me,” although he’s nearly overshadowed by Williams, who lays down an effortless vocal on the bridge, and Halsey, who adapts a breathy Valley Girl wonder on her spoken-sung bits.

The moments when Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 breaks from its chill provide shots of adrenaline. On “Ready or Not,” Busta Rhymes offers up a slightly relaxed version of his tongue-twisting rhymes over jagged synths and pounding house piano; on “Lean On Me,” which is punctuated by a twistily melodic guitar solo, Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee is in full-on wail mode, vacillating between flaunting his riches and expressing his longing for real connection.

Harris isn’t reinventing the dance-pop wheel with Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 — the title alone shows that. But it’s a fine wind-down album, one that can be put on shuffle at the end of a long-summer-night bacchanal, when revelers reach that point where they’re too tired to do anything but bask in the glow of the blowout they just threw.

Review: ‘Easter Sunday’ is a loving ode to Filipino culture

A boisterous extended clan gathers for a family holiday, launching the requisite arguments, hurt feelings, grudges, inside jokes, laughter, love, reconciliation and lots of eating, plus maybe a car chase.

So far, so familiar.

What’s different about “ Easter Sunday,” a joyful if overly broad family dramedy starring comedian Jo Koy, is that this extended clan is a Filipino American family and the cast is almost all Filipino, with a few familiar actors finally getting cast as Filipino characters And that in itself is a welcome achievement, especially for Koy, whose life is clearly echoed here and who anchors the enterprise with a winning charm. The writing could surely be sharper and the ending is more than a little sappy. But this is an undeniable step forward for representation on the big screen.

Koy clearly channels much of his own story in this, his feature film debut, drawing from his hugely popular standup comedy (Jay Chandrasekhar directs from a script by Kate Angelo and Ken Cheng.). He plays Joe Valencia, a Los Angeles comedian seeking his big acting break in Hollywood — just as he’s navigating family issues on multiple fronts, all coming to a head on, well, Easter Sunday.

We meet Joe, a divorced dad, on a day of competing obligations. His son, Junior (a sweetly goofy Brandon Wardell) needs his presence at a school meeting to discuss mediocre grades. His own demanding mom, Susan (Lydia Gaston, blending imperious, demanding, loving and needy) is constantly calling, making sure he’s on track for Easter celebrations. And he’s auditioning for a sitcom — something that’ll take him beyond that beer commercial where he’s famous for the line, “Let’s get this party started, baby!”

Joe (unsurprisingly) misses the school meeting but makes the audition, only to be told that they love him but want a “half-Filipino accent” — even though it’s an accent he doesn’t have. “This show just wants a funny-sounding Filipino,” he complains to his agent, who tells him to just suck it up and do the accent. (The agent is played, winkingly, by director Chandrasekhar as a guy who’s always suspiciously driving through tunnels and losing his cell signal.)

Easter Sunday comes, and Joe heads up the California coast to Daly City and the Filipino American neighborhood where his mom and her sister, Teresa (Tia Carrere, who has said this is her first Filipino role in a 40-year career), are each planning holiday meals. They’re feuding, too, over something or other. It doesn’t help that the two women happen to wear the exact same exact dress to church (yes, that old joke.) Much funnier is their fierce competition over the balikbayan boxes filled with gifts to be sent to family back home.

As the holiday festivities proceed apace and Joe tries to keep his sitcom prospects alive, several subplots come into play. One involves Joe’s lovable but less-than-sensible cousin Eugene (Eugene Cordero) and his ill-conceived entrepreneurial efforts, which land him and Joe into potentially deadly conflict with gun-toting bully Dev Deluxe (Asif Ali) and bring them together, improbably, with Filipino American star Lou Diamond Phillips, playing himself.

There’s also a brief run-in with the law during a car chase, the law being none other than Tiffany Haddish, in a cameo as Vanessa, an ex of Joe’s with an axe to grind and, now, a cop’s badge.

Haddish is, not surprisingly, quite funny. Less welcome is the whole splapsticky criminal-gang subplot that detracts from the more human themes. Speaking of humanity, the lovely Eva Noblezada projects it beautifully as Tala, a romantic interest for Junior — a confident young woman who shows the LA-raised boy some of the values around family that she’s learned in Daly City.

If you’re a Broadway fan, you may know Noblezada from “Hadestown,” in which her terrific singing talent, teased here for a few seconds, is on full display. (Couldn’t they have given her more bars?) Noblezada’s unforced delivery makes her scenes a highlight in a film that overall relies too heavily on broad comedy. A church service turned standup routine seems especially forced.

And yet, one can’t help leaving with a smile. Food, family, a big karaoke scene … and a spotlight on an immigrant community underrepresented in Hollywood. There are worse ways to spend 96 minutes.

“Easter Sunday,” a Universal Studios release, has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some strong language, and suggestive references. “ Running time: 96 minutes. Two stars out of four.

DC Officially Crowns Gotham’s Most Underrated Villain

Most readers may not even remember them, but in the scope of Gotham City and its universe, these baddies are underappreciated in canon.

DC Comics seems to confirm that Batman’s most underappreciated villains in Gotham City, in canon, are none other than The Tweedles. They have a history in DC lore that goes as far back as Batman’s classic adventures from the 1940s. Dumfree Tweed and Deever Tweed are introduced initially as nearly identical cousins (not actual twins, as so many people think) who pattern their crimes after classic Lewis Carroll characters Tweedledee and Tweedledum, two Alice in Wonderland characters who they both happen to resemble, coincidentally.

Both in canon and in real life, The Tweedles often go overlooked and oft forgotten in the grand scheme of things, despite having quite the pedigree to their names. Their comic book history has seen the two serve as henchmen of The Joker (though Joker’s weirdest henchperson is still Daffy Duck), members of Lex Luthor’s Secret Society of Super-Villains, and had their own gang called The Wonderland Gang. The two have no real powers to speak of, unless one counts using their rotund bodies to bounce off the walls as a superpower.

Related: Batman Has The Perfect Way Of Fighting Magical Enemies

Although silly in conception, The Tweedles’ relevance in actual DC canon is placed in a new perspective thanks to Batman Killing Time #5. In Tom King and David Marquez’s work, there is a war going on between goons who represent every criminal in Gotham City. While most villains have multiple representatives (a gang, in some cases), The Tweedles only have one sole fan representing them. The fan, Matthew Kahan, doesn’t put up much of a fight as he succumbs to a heart attack almost instantly, but his presence on behalf of The Tweedles highlights the actual impact these underrated Batman villains really had on Gotham City.

panels from Batman: Killing Time #5

While readers may find The Tweedles easy to forget, the actual citizens of Gotham recognize the impact that the duo left on their city. Whether it’s being a part of a lead villain’s larger scheme or committing crimes themselves, it cannot be denied that the two left enough of an imprint on Gotham (however small that imprint might be) for Gothamites to remember. And, in the case of Matthew Kahan, an impact that at least one Gothamite admires. While Batman has many underrated villains, these two transcend the label of underrated.

This doesn’t mean that The Tweedles are any bigger of a threat than they already were – these are still mere goons who Batman usually disposes of with ease – but perhaps readers shouldn’t write them off so easily as if they were nothing more than comedy acts in the larger DC canon.

Paper Girls Star Jason Mantzoukas Loved Explaining Show’s Time Travel Logistics

In any series involving time travel, it often becomes a herculean task to actually explain the rules of time travel in that universe. In “Paper Girls,” that responsibility falls to Jason Mantzoukas, as The Grandfather — but he absolutely relished the duty.

In reality, Amazon Prime’s “Paper Girls” actually has a pretty clean way of explaining time travel, compared to other series. To explain it, the Grandfather uses a mixtape that Mac listens to on repeat. The normal timeline, that’s the original recording. But as the timeline gets written over with new “songs” — in this series, by the STF — the “audio” that is recorded over gets fuzzy. Eventually, enough re-recording leads to complete disintegration of the tape (“the tape” being reality in this case).

The Grandfather merely explains the actual mechanics of it, rather than the “rules” time travelers must abide by. And where that task can be daunting for some actors, Mantzoukas wasn’t worried. It helped that he’d read the comic the series is based on.

“You know, I understood it pretty much. I understood it in the context of the story we’re telling,” he explained to TheWrap. “Because I’d read the comics a bunch of times. Like, I’ve been a ‘Paper Girls’ fan since since Brian and Cliff started putting the book out. I bought issue one in Secret Headquarters in Los Angeles, my favorite comic book store, and had been reading it ever since. And so I knew their version of a time travel story. And so I pretty much understood it, and I didn’t kind of poke at it too much to be like, ‘Well, what about this? What about that?’ Because, for me, it lines up with the story we’re telling. And so, it was great.”

The Grandfather’s explanation is almost enough to convince the girls that time travel is, in fact, bad and that the time war is warranted. Almost. But they know he’s not to be trusted, no matter how nice he seems (he is a Mantzoukas character after all — he’s got some charm to him). And that dichotomy was another piece of the character Mantzoukas ate up.

“I love that I get to have both kind of antagonist, villain kind of vibes, but then also explain or exposition. You know, like I’m the — my character’s name is Grandfather but the story is a coming of age story for young girls. And now you’ve got an elder kind of explaining the rules, you know, the rules that they’re going to just break over and over and over again, which is really compelling. So I love that I got to have that kind of — and I thought the mixtape was a great way to illustrate it, you know?”

Of course, beyond the mixtape metaphor being a creative one, Mantzoukas and his on-screen lieutenant Adina Porter, who plays Prioress, also just appreciated that the metaphor put a little respect on the general concept of a mixtape.

“I love the fact that the mixtape is getting the respect that is due,” Porter said, to a hard agreement by Mantzoukas. “All of us of a certain age have been given a mixtape. The time it takes to create a mixtape! And I’m glad, I’m glad that it’s being respected the way it ought to be.”

You can watch TheWrap’s full conversation with Mantzoukas and Porter in the video above.

Ela Minus / DJ Python : “Pájaros en Verano” Track Review

Nothing invites self-reflection quite like a traumatic event. For Colombian producer-singer Ela Minus, the pandemic meant taking stock of the things she’s thankful for while longing for the sweetness of a life that might have been. The sentiment is at the center of “Pájaros en Verano” (“Birds in Spring”), the first single from a new EP with DJ Python titled, simply, ♡. The pair’s collaboration was sparked by shared appreciation for Leslie Winer’s 1993 LP Witch, a foundational trip-hop album that threads despair through soul, hip-hop, dub, and punk stylings. As Minus bemoans “all the days that never happened and the nights that didn’t exist,” she doesn’t hesitate to express her gratitude for a relationship: “I can’t complain/’Cause I got you.” The bright tones and crunchy percussion of DJ Python’s sparse production—made with a single sampler and synthesizer—echo some of Minus’ own early singles and give her words room to breathe. The result is a score well-suited for heading into—or out of—quarantine, a lament that’s tempered with hopefulness for moments to come.

Sharp Stick | Film Threat

NOW IN THEATERS! I admit it: I’m a dude and sort of a fuddy-duddy. So maybe I’m not the target audience for Lena Dunham‘s post-Girls feature Sharp Stick. But then again, I have to believe I’m not the only one with questions about this film.

Sarah Jo (Kristine Froseth) lives with her sexually-open new-age mother, Marilyn (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and budding social media influencer sister, Treina (Taylour Paige). As a child, Sarah Jo had severe health problems, so much so she had to have a radical hysterectomy. Due to being sick, she feels like she missed a lot of what life offers.

Sarah Jo works as a special needs nanny for a pregnant couple, Heather (Lena Dunham) and Josh (Jon Bernthal), along with their Down-Syndrome son, Zach (Liam Michel Saux). Sexually curious, Sarah Jo seduces a reluctant, yet willing, Josh, and he opens her world up to self-pleasure and pornography. She quickly gains a favorite actor in the industry, Vance Leroy (Scott Speedman). When Heather finds out about the affair, Sarah Jo is fired and rejected by Josh. The sexually frustrated woman creates an alphabet of sexual acts, positions, and scenarios. She plans to act out each letter with random strangers she meets through Craig’s List and other contacts.

“The sexually frustrated Sarah Jo creates an alphabet of sexual acts, positions, and scenarios…”

I’m not exactly a fan of Dunham. It has nothing to do with her skill as a filmmaker, but because I’ve never been interested in her work. However, Sharp Stick tells an intriguing story about Sarah Jo and her journey to take control of her sexuality. She’s never abused or taken advantage of, and everything she does, she chooses. There’s no denying that Dunham is a veteran filmmaker — good structure, fantastic acting, and a tale that’s trademark Dunham. It all comes down to whether you prefer the stories she tells.

My problem is with the basic premise of a young woman and her sexual exploration. As the plot unfolds, I felt sorry and sad for Sarah Jo. Everything she does is inspired by stories of her mother’s sexual exploits, but Sarah Jo never gets any guidance from her mother or anyone, except maybe the men she sleeps with (particularly Josh). She’s on this exploration alone, and each encounter is purely transactional. Any downside of this behavior is seen in Treina’s subplot, which I wish was explored in greater detail. There’s an intriguing story there.

As much as I wrestled with the basic plot, I come to Sharp Stick with no moral judgment. I’ve known and heard stories of people just like Sarah Jo, and quite frankly, their stories, though highly engaging, are rarely fulfilling ones in the long run. Let’s face it. This narrative has been told a thousand times from the male perspective in teen sex comedies, like Porky’s, with guys going out to get laid or lose their virginity after prom. But, even in those films, sex was something you did without any emotional consequences, and that’s the same feeling I have regarding Sharp Stick. Like the boys in those teen sex comedies, Sarah Jo viewed each act as a personal victory yet an empty one (of course, more recent sex comedies like The To Do List and Yes God Yes are similar and from the female perspective).

If you’re a fan of Lena Dunham, you will probably like Sharp Stick. But, for me, I couldn’t get past the premise. Let’s also face facts, if you’re looking for a sex comedy… well, I question the direction of female sex comedies over the past few years.

Sharp Stick screened at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

British girl, seven, is killed in horror speedboat crash in Albania

This is the moment a distraught father who had just watched his daughter killed by a speedboat propeller brawled with the man now accused over her death.

British-born Jonada Avdia, seven, had been holidaying with father Bledar and her mother on Potam beach, in their native Albania, when she was hit and killed by the boat around 2pm Tuesday.

Horrified onlookers captured the moment off-duty cop Arjan Tase, who is now facing a manslaughter charge over Jonada’s death, came back to shore – and was confronted by Bledar.

Pictures show Tase – wearing pink swimming shorts – locking armed with Bledar – in black – as people rush to separate them.

Images of the brawl were posted online by Albania’s former prime minister Sali Berisha in the wake of the tragedy.

Recounting the horror day to local media, Bledar said: ‘I was bathing together with my daughter near the shore, I saw a white boat with two people on board.

‘The boat parked on the beach near a hotel and I saw a girl get off from there.’

He recalled how a woman and children got into the boat, which then set off again through an area roped off for swimmers, heading towards him and his daughter.

‘It came in our direction and came at hellish speed and separated me and the girl.

‘I dived down under the water and the craft hit my daughter with the engine part, cutting her all over.

‘I saw that the vehicle left, but then the boatman came back, stopping the boat and coming to the shore.’

Bislim Ahmetajm, a teacher who was on the beach that day, recalled on Facebook how Bledar came up to him afterwards and said: ‘I should have died instead of her.’

Tase was arrested a short time later, and is due in court in the city of Vlora today.

Investigators say he was taking members of his own family from Porto Palermo to Potam – a distance of around five miles – when the crash happened.

They say he drove through an area meant only for swimmers, that was clearly marked with buoys, and up on to the beach.

After dropping off his relatives he put the boat back into the water in the same area, and pulled some ‘dangerous manoeuvres’.

It was then that he hit Jonada as she played around 15ft off shore.

The boat’s spinning propeller blades ’caused serious injuries that led to immediate loss of life’, a police spokesman said.

Tase is now being investigated for ‘negligent homicide’ while 15 police officers who were supposed to be guarding the water that day have been sacked.

Tase, reportedly a police chief from the city of Elbasan, is due to appear in court in Vlora today.

Hundreds of candles and flowers have been placed where Jonada lost her life, as well as in front of the Prime Minister’s office.

Protests have also broken out across the country in fury at the death, with dozens of marchers clashing with police in the capital of Tirana yesterday.

15 police officers who should have been guarding the ocean that day (pictured) have since been sacked, while protests have broken out around the country.

They are called for the resignation of the interior minister, the head of police, and the tourism minister – accusing the state of killing Jonada, local media says.

It is the third such accident to happen on the beaches of Albania this summer.

A couple were injured by a speedboat on Jale beach, also in southern Albania, last month – while a second seven-year-old child was hurt in a crash just two days later.

Mirela Kumbaro, the tourism minister, has laid blame for the crash at the feet of Tase and the national chief of police.

She told Albanian Daily News: ‘An angel is no longer among us because of the stupidity of a man who broke every law, every rule and every norm with tragically irreversible consequences.

‘With awareness that there are no words to serve as a consolation for the parents, the family for the tragedy they suffered, the request goes to justice to do its job, without compromise, with maximum punishment for anyone who breaks the law.

‘The request goes to the state police as well, to each of its employees in the territory, to be at the level of vigilance and punishment that the uniform imposes on them.’
