The Quest For Tom Sawyer’s Gold is directed by Kirk Harris. The screenplay was written by Nick Pollack, with revisions/additional material by Jerome Reygner-Kalfon and Sebastien Semon. The family-friendly adventure has also assembled quite the cast with the likes of Amanda Joy Erickson, Patrick Muldoon, Joey Lauren Adams, and freaking Alex Hyde-White starring or having supporting roles. So, does the story justify all the behind-the-camera bonafides?

Agatha Armstrong (Ava Torres) and her talking cat, Mrs. Mac, are the most well-known adventurers out there. And considering the daring lass is only 12, give or take, that is quite the feat. But that was years ago. Now, Agatha (Amanda Joy Erickson) is a teacher and mom to teenage Antony (Dodge Prince). The school’s principal, Jenny (Joey Lauren Adams), then gives Agatha bad news: her mentor turned nemesis, A.J. Harrison (Patrick Muldoon), is given a coveted spot on the faculty.

Meanwhile, Antony and his friends, Lu (Deja Monique Cruz) and Woody (Kobi Frumer), discover that they might be able to unearth Tom Sawyer’s long-fabled treasure. The trio’s search for Tom Sawyer’s gold, Agatha’s past, Detective Thatcher’s (Scott Bailey) attempts to keep everyone safe, and A.J.’s real reason for accepting the position are tied more closely than any of them realize.

“…they might be able to unearth Tom Sawyer’s long-fabled treasure.”

The Quest For Tom Sawyer’s Gold does feature several CGI talking animals. The how/why the cat and alligator (crocodile?) can speak is never properly explained. Viewers will either accept this at face value or just be thrown out of the film entirely and probably not finish it. The latter will then miss out on a spry, rollicking adventure that is full of charm, whimsy, decent effects, and brilliant acting.

Harris really shines as an indie director. He builds the world effectively without resorting to heavy exposition that kills the momentum. The comedy and drama all land equally well, while the adventure aspects are fun and exciting. The screenplay might seem to have been in trouble, what with the presence of credited revisionists. What and why they changed things, I don’t know. However, the story is a delight, emphasizing the bond between friends, parents, and children. This theme makes the movie accessible to just about anyone of any age.

Then there’s the cast of The Quest For Tom Sawyer’s Gold. While only in the film briefly, Adams is still charming. Hyde-White, who is the narrator, is still affable and sweet. Young Torres is an enjoyable presence. Cruz and Frumer are the kind of friends everyone should have. Bailey is adorably befuddled in every scene. Prince nails the smothered but loving child. Muldoon is as priceless as ever, being goofy but threatening as the baddie. But really, the adventure belongs to Erickson, who delivers on all fronts. It is very evident that the actor is primed to explode onto the A-list at any moment.

The Quest For Tom Sawyer’s Gold is a perfect family film. The story moves at a brisk pace and features something for everyone. The direction balances the tones masterfully, while the music underscores the action perfectly. But really, it is the stunning cast — not a bad actor among them — who push this adventure flick into flawless territory. Muldoon gives it his all, while Erickson proves she’s more than ready to lead a huge studio production. So, why haven’t you watched this yet?

Hot momma! Gossip Girl alum Blake Lively, 35, took to Instagram on Friday to show off a series of sexy swimsuit photos while on a vacation with her hubby, Ryan Reynolds, 46, and other family members. “she sells seashells down by the seashore,” the proud mom-of-four captioned the carousel of photos. In the first slide, Blake rocked a geometric-print Follow Suit bikini, which she accessorized with a seashell necklace and what appeared to be overalls. She also showed off her figure-hugging geometric-print pants, which she also wore with the same bikini top.

The A Simple Favor star later switched things up with a black one-piece swimsuit by the pool. Blake smiled big in the fifth slide, while she went makeup-free and allowed her golden tresses to flow down in loose waves. That swimsuit featured a cut-out design on the front, tiny straps, and a high-waisted bottom. In the third photo, her husband of 10 years rocked a white tank top and khaki pants while taking a stroll on the beach with Blake.

Since the 35-year-old welcomed her fourth child with Ryan just two months ago, many of her 38.9 million followers flooded the comments with their reactions to the sexy snapshots. “Ooo lalaaaa!”, her sister, Robyn Lively, 51, quipped, while a fan added, “BLAKEEEEEE [sic] OMGGGG.” Blake’s personal hair stylist, Jennifer Yepez, also couldn’t help but gush over the new vacation photos. “Mamasita,” she commented, along with a series of fire emojis.

That same day, the Deadpool star and father to Blake’s children, took to Instagram to post a selfie with his mom, Tammy Reynolds. Ryan rocked a yellow linen button-up shirt, while he held his mom close, while she looked elegant in a white t-shirt. Blake’s round up of vacation photos also include a selfie with Tammy and Blake’s mom, Elaine Lively. It would appear that it a full-blown family holiday as they all celebrated spring break.

As many know, Blake and Ryan have welcomed four kids during their marriage. Their adorable family includes daughters James, 8, Inez, 6, and Betty, 3. The family’s recent edition, born sometime in Feb. 2023, name has not yet been revealed. James was born in 2014, about two years after Blake finished her time on Gossip Girl, while Inez was born in Sept. 2016. Betty, who Blake named her drink mixer company, Betty Buzz, after, was born on Oct. 4, 2019. The proud momma bear debuted her most recent baby bump at the 10th Annual Forbes Power Women’s Summit in NYC on Sept. 14, 2022, about five months before she gave birth.

Bob Lee, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, investor and executive who created Cash App, died Tuesday after he was fatally stabbed in San Francisco, according to reports. He was 43.

Lee was formerly CTO of Jack Dorsey’s payments company Square (which is now called Block) and most recently was the chief product officer at cryptocurrency company MobileCoin, which he joined in late 2021.

The San Francisco Police Department said in an announcement that it responded to a report of a stabbing near the 300 block of Main Street on April 4 at about 2:35 a.m. SFPD did not identify the victim. NBC Bay Area and other outlets subsequently reported that the victim of the stabbing was Lee.

MobileCoin founder and CEO Joshua Goldbard confirmed Lee’s death in a statement to Bloomberg. Lee is survived by “a loving family and collection of close friends and collaborators,” Goldbard said in the statement. “Bob was made for the new world, he was the quintessential creator, leader and consummate hacker. Bob surely had an impact that will last far beyond his short time on Earth.”

In a thread on Twitter, Goldbard said Lee “was like a brother to me.” “Bob left this world too soon,” he wrote. “Everywhere he went Bob breathed love into this world. He had so much deep heartfelt love. Traveling with Bob was like seeing the world for the first time.”

Dorsey, CEO of Block and the former CEO of Twitter, commented about Lee’s death on the Snort decentralized social network (h/t TechCrunch), “It’s real. Getting calls. Heartbreaking. Bob was instrumental to Square and Cash App. STL guy.”

Lee was the creator of Cash App (formerly Square Cash), a mobile payment service that lets users transfer money to each other. Prior to Square, he worked at Google leading Android’s core library team and launching what has become the world’s most-used operating system. In addition, Lee invested in companies including Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Clubhouse, Tile, Figma, Faire, Orchid, Addressable, Nana and Ticket Fairy, according to his profile on LinkedIn.

Showing Up star Hong Chau couldn’t imagine shooting another film directly after the emotional roller-coaster of The Whale, but she’s grateful that Kelly Reichardt persisted, anyway.

In Reichardt’s newest film that revolves around the Portland art scene, the Oscar-nominated Chau plays Jo, an accomplished, extroverted artist whose celebrated installations have made her the pride and joy of Oregon College of Art and Craft. Michelle Williams’ Lizzy, who helps her mother (Maryann Plunkett) run the school, is a former classmate of Jo’s and now lives in her shadow as both an artist and as her tenant. Lizzy, being more a low-key sculptor, is the polar opposite of Jo in that she’s quite introverted, but she’s actually the character who Chau could identify with most.

“That’s what’s so funny. I’m totally more of a Lizzy than I am a Jo,” Chau tells The Hollywood Reporter. “She doesn’t really hold back anything and isn’t overly concerned about hurting people’s feelings or upsetting them. And that’s so completely foreign to me in my own real life.”

Chau recently appeared on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, where she opened up about the hurtful response to her Vietnamese activist character, Ngoc Lan Tran, in Alexander Payne’s Downsizing (2017). During the film’s release, quite a few critics believed that Chau portrayed a caricature who perpetuated Asian stereotypes at a time when the industry was finally starting to move away from such depictions onscreen. But now, as Chau explained to Maron, she feels like her own background and agency was never really factored into the equation, and what was perhaps most upsetting was the lack of support she received from her own community.

Since she put herself out there in her March episode of WTF, Chau received a much-appreciated call of support from someone she holds in very high regard.

“Sandra Oh reached out to me and wanted to talk because she listened to that interview,” Chau shares. “She just wanted to talk, kind of as a big sister, and she was bummed for me because she wasn’t aware that that happened. She was just really disappointed in the response that people had to the character. So it was just really nice that she reached out in that way.”

Below, during a recent conversation with THR, Chau also discusses the welcoming environment that longtime collaborators Reichardt and Williams created on the set of Showing Up.

So did you have to go out for this, or did Kelly reach out based on your body of work?

No, Kelly had no idea who I was. (Laughs.)

Wow.

I’m pretty sure she had no idea who I was. I think Gayle Keller, our casting director, bugged her to watch Driveways, a little indie that I did a couple years ago. It was directed by Andrew Ahn, and I think Kelly finally got around to watching it. So that’s how I was invited.

At what point in the script did you find a way into Jo?

It was pretty immediate. I loved the character from the get-go. Some characters and some scripts just feel like you have to muscle it a little bit more. There’s some heavy lifting that needs to be done, but this script was so easy and the character came so easy to me. And I’m so grateful. I received the call about Showing Up while I was in New York, working on The Whale, and we had just started on The Whale. So I couldn’t wrap my mind around doing another film right afterwards, and I think I tried to say no and backpedal from it. And thankfully, Kelly Reichardt kept the conversation going. So I came out to Portland and we just had a lot of fun.

Between the introverted Lizzy (Michelle Williams) and the more extroverted Jo, did you relate more to Lizzy?

Absolutely. That’s what’s so funny. I’m totally more of a Lizzy than I am a Jo. (Laughs.) And the way that Kelly Reichardt explained the character to me was that Jo has a different pleasure center than Lizzy. It’s just more readily accessible to her, which is very obvious when you watch the movie. She’s very light on her feet and just expresses herself. She doesn’t really hold back anything and isn’t overly concerned about hurting people’s feelings or upsetting them. And that’s so completely foreign to me in my own real life. So it was really fun to get to play Jo.

Jo and Lizzy went to art school together, and now, Lizzy quite literally lives in Jo’s shadow, both professionally and residentially, if you will. So how purposeful is Jo’s negative effect on Lizzy? It’s not meant to be as extreme as psychological warfare, right?

I personally didn’t approach it that way. I didn’t think that it was intentional or that it had an agenda behind it. I feel like I know a lot of Jos. I feel like I encounter them all the time where it’s not that they’re purposely trying to upset you, it’s just that they’re not thinking about you. (Laughs.) They’re thinking about other things, and it’s usually about themselves. So it’s just something where you can’t take it personally if you’re on the other end of it. When a person like Jo does choose to shower you with attention or respond to you, I’m sure it feels like the sun is shining on you, and when she doesn’t, you’re literally left in the cold. So I didn’t think that it was psychological warfare. Maybe Lizzy felt that way, but I think a lot of it is self-created, if I can pass my own judgment on that.

Lizzy seems to want solitude and recognition at the same time. Can a working actor ever achieve that contradictory balance?

It’s tough. What Jo does well is that she is a true artist, but she’s also willing and aware that there’s a game that needs to be played in order to have more awareness from other people about your art. And some people may look at it and say that it’s about selling yourself or selling out, and then other people look at it as just being smart or savvy. So I think it just depends on the person, and not everybody’s definition of success looks the same. It’s a hard question to answer because I think you can be a successful actor just doing community theater. If you feel fulfilled by it and it’s making you happy, then you don’t necessarily need to be Tom Cruise in order to feel like you’re a successful actor. So there are all sorts of degrees of success.

Whether it was the tire swing installation or tying foam together, you had some unique bits of business in this one. Did you receive a tire swing lesson of some sort? That would certainly be a change of pace from the typical types of training that actors do, be it voice or weapons.

I did not get a lesson with the actual tire, but I did get some rope to practice tying knots over and over again. It’s pretty tricky, especially having to do it correctly on camera after they call action. There’s a little bit of pressure when everybody is watching you do it. When I was cast, Gayle Keller, our casting director, drove over to the house that I was renting in the Hudson Valley and dropped off a box of art supplies and books that Kelly wanted me to have. And in the box, there was a lot of brightly colored yarn that Kelly wanted me to practice weaving because Michelle Segre’s [the real-life sculptor behind Jo’s art] artwork employs a lot of that brightly colored yarn.

Initially, in the script, Kelly wanted to have this close-up shot of Jo’s hands weaving, but once I spent some time with Michelle Segre in her workshop, we realized that Michelle Segre’s work is so physical that you really wanted to see it in full. She utilizes her body to create her art. She bends steel pipes or metal pipes with just her feet, using her body and the counterweight of it in order to bend the pipes. She climbs up and down a ladder with a drill, and she’s sweating by the end of it. And so that’s what Kelly ended up putting in the film. Jo wrestles with this foam and this chicken wire, and I was trying to re-create this carrot that Michelle Segre had done with foam and chicken wire and orange wax on the outside. I got to see her do it from scratch, and then I tried to do that in the film. It took quite a while, and I was also sweating afterwards. Kelly then said something really funny. She was like, “Well, I just filmed my first sex scene.” (Laughs.)

Michelle and Kelly had worked together three times already, and I presume they’re quite simpatico. Since movie or TV sets can sometimes be challenging for the new person who’s joining longtime collaborators, did they go out of their way to make everybody feel included in their creative bubble?

I assumed the same thing as you, but there was no bubble that needed to be entered. I did not feel like they were doing anything different from how they normally interact on other films. It didn’t feel insular at all, and I didn’t feel like I was waiting to be let in at any point. That thing that you’re describing of being tuned in to just each other and tuning everybody else out, it’s just not who Kelly Reichardt is. She’s somebody who is very interested in and curious about all people. There’s no hierarchy or circles on her sets. It all feels very familial. Everybody is a friend or a friend of a friend or a family member. Our two characters, Lizzy and Jo, are named after [co-writer] Jon Raymond’s daughters, and one of our producers, Neil [Kopp], his daughter is one of the little girls in the gallery at the end of the movie. Even the overalls I was wearing belonged to a friend of Kelly’s, so everything just felt connected to somebody or something else. It didn’t feel like an environment where there could be any divisions or walls.

That early scene in The Whale where Liz (Chau) and Charlie (Brendan Fraser) are watching TV just rocked me once we figured out what he wanted from her. “Liz, please.” To stay on the topic of contradictions, were you ever able to reconcile the fact that she was both his enabler and his caretaker?

Yeah, for the audience watching, I think it does feel very contradictory and odd, but when I really think about it, every profound relationship or friendship that I have or have witnessed has some sort of strange codependency involved. Sometimes, there are elements or instances where somebody can judge it and say, “That’s not healthy,” but it’s true to life. So that didn’t hang me up too much when I read it in the script, honestly.

The parts that I struggled with in terms of their dynamic were the moments when Liz was really frustrated with him and behaved in a way that was out of weakness. I’m thinking specifically of the scene where Charlie almost chokes to death, and then she’s just so angry and frustrated that she ends up hitting him. That’s something that frequently occurs with people who are in long-term caregiver relationships or situations. That’s maybe something that’s not talked about often, but it is very true to life and accurate. Another difficult one was when she realizes that he’s been keeping a secret from her, and she has to reevaluate who she is to him. So those were the things that took a little bit more thought and were a little trickier to play.

So I have to tell you that I really felt for you during your eye-opening conversation with Marc Maron on WTF. What has the response been like now that you’ve put yourself out there in regard to how you were treated during Downsizing’s release? Has anybody reached out to acknowledge your feelings and/or apologize?

Actually, one person did reach out, a very great one person. Sandra Oh reached out to me and wanted to talk because she listened to that interview. Whenever I do interviews, I never think that anybody actually reads or listens to them. So part of me was mortified that she had listened to my interview, but it was so nice that she reached out. She just wanted to talk, kind of as a big sister, and she was bummed for me because she wasn’t aware that that happened. So that was her first time hearing it, and she was just really disappointed in the response that people had to the character. So it was just really nice that she reached out in that way, and then it was also so nice to get to bump into her at the Oscars. One of the nice things about having worked for a little longer is how I feel at events now, and it’s a little bit different from how I felt during Downsizing. I literally did not know anybody at the time, and it was just a very uncomfortable experience. Every time I would go to a cocktail party or something, I would just kind of stand there, holding a glass, but at least this time around, I knew a couple of more faces in the crowd, with Sandra being one of them. So that was a nice thing to get out of doing a podcast interview.

Did Matt Damon orchestrate the current Downsizing reunion between the two of you?

Yes, I am working on The Instigators right now. We were just in Boston. We just started filming, and it’s so nice to get to work with him again. It’s obviously a completely different story with completely different characters and power dynamics and everything. So it’ll be fun, and I’m looking forward to this movie being out there in the world.

Disha Patani knows how to rock any style. During a recent event, the actress once again impressed with her sartorial choice. On Friday evening, Disha was seen arriving at an event in Mumbai dressed in a silver cut-out gown with a thigh-high slit. In her gorgeous dress, the actress flaunted her toned legs and perfect body. As she arrived on the red carpet, Disha was seen struggling with her dress, however, the actress handled it with grace.

To complete her look, she kept her hair open and went with light makeup. Watch the video here:

While she received praises from netizens for her looks, some felt it has become repetitive. One user wrote, “She definitely needs a new stylist” while another user added, “Same style”. Netizens also pointed out that she was struggling with her thigh-high slit dress and wrote, “Agar comfortable meshoos nahi kar rahi to kia faida aisi dress ka”

Last week at an event, Disha once again turned heads with her sexy outfit. Disha had donned a glamorous silver saree with a matching strapless bra as she arrived at a fashion gala in Mumbai on Saturday night. The actress teamed her look with danglers and styled her hair in beach waves.

On the work front, Disha Patani was last seen sharing screen space with Arjun Kapoor, John Abraham, and Tara Sutaria in Ek Villain Returns. The newest trailer for the long-awaited Secret Invasion series on Disney+ may have offered a tease at the status of the Avengers team in the MCU, following the end of the Infinity Saga.

Despite the MCU producing an entire phase of movies since Avengers: Endgame, the titular team itself has not assembled again after that movie’s climax.

Smaller subgroups have certainly worked together, and the team has been referenced numerous times. However, none of Phase 4’s films saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fighting together as one cohesive team.

In fact, Kevin Feige teased at D23 last year “that there currently is a world without the Avengers,” leading fans to wonder if the team has, at least temporarily, disbanded in the MCU.

Granted, two more Avengers films are in production, so it likely isn’t a permanent end to the team. But, the newest trailer for Secret Invasion does corroborate the claim of a lack of Avengers at the moment.

A Status Update for the Avengers

In the most recent trailer for the upcoming Secret Invasion series, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) makes a comment that seems to corroborate Kevin Feige’s D23 revelation “that there currently is a world without the Avengers” in the MCU.

Marvel Studios

Around a minute into the newest trailer, Fury can be seen reading a newspaper about the Attack on New York, the colloquial, in-universe name for the events of the first Avengers film.

Behind this clip, someone dubbed an “agent” by the subtitles asks “Where are the Avengers?”

Nick Fury with a mustache, beard and no eye patch in Secret Invasion
Marvel Studios

The trailer then cuts to Fury himself, cryptically saying that “this war is one I have to fight. Alone.”

While this is not a confirmation that the Avengers are disbanded, it is strange that the person who fought so vehemently for the team’s creation is now insisting to take on evils on his own.

Is Nick Fury Really Fighting Alone?

Fans of the Avengers will be quick to assert that no, Fury is never fighting alone. Even when the Avengers aren’t actively working as a unit, they will always come together and fight.

However, if the team doesn’t know of the threat at hand, and Fury insists on keeping this “invasion” a “secret,” then a disbanded Avengers team may not realize it’s time to re-assemble once more.

The whole premise of Secret Invasion seems to be pulling from its source comic, focusing on an invasion of Skrulls onto Earth that happened under everyone’s noses. If Fury is one of the only ones to know about the looming war, maybe he really will fight it without the Avengers backing him up.

But, as the trailer indicates, he will have allies in Maria Hill, Talos, and more. Even if the Avengers are not there, Fury is never truly alone.

Secret Invasion premieres on Disney+ on June 21.

Writer, director, and now co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, has declared that the long-discussed crossover between Marvel and DC is now “more likely” since he was put in charge. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Gunn revealed that he has had fun toying with the idea of a Marvel Vs. DC movie but, should it ever actually come to fruition, it won’t be for a while yet.

“I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC]. Who knows? That’s many years away, though. I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”

Gunn certainly sounds a little more optimistic about the prospect of a Marvel versus DC project than he has in the past. Discussing the idea back in 2021, Gunn said, “I’ve casually talked to the powers-that-be at both Marvel & DC about it. I would love for it to happen. I don’t think it’s likely, but I don’t think it’s an impossibility either. THAT SAID, just constantly seeing crossovers & mashups is less enchanting to me than a strong story.”

The two comic giants have come face-to-face before in comic book form, and with the recent emergence of the cinematic multiverse, seeing the likes of Superman and Batman doing battle (before inevitably teaming up) with the likes of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange would be far less confusing to audiences than it would have perhaps been years ago.

Still, even if it has edged ever closer, Gunn remains dedicated to story over big, crossover events. Besides, the filmmaker has revealed what he would do with such a project before, focusing on the lesser-known side characters rather than the heavy hitters. “What would be your dream Marvel and DC crossover-team up project? King Shark, Rocket, Weasel, & Groot,” he said.

The DCU Will Begin in 2025 with Superman: Legacy

DC Comics

James Gunn is now in charge of the DCU alongside producer Peter Safran, with Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters all set to begin on July, 11, 2025 with the Superman reboot, Superman: Legacy. The Superman reboot will be followed by the superhero team-up flick The Authority, a Batman project titled The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, a Wonder Woman prequel series titled Paradise Lost, the animated series Creature Commandos, a series centered on Amanda Waller, a Green Lantern series titled Lanterns, and a series about Booster Gold.

As for the MCU, Phase 5 will continue with James Gunn’s own Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is scheduled for release on May 5, 2023. The rest of the Phase includes The Marvels, Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts, and Blade on the big screen, and Secret Invasion, Loki Season 2, Ironheart, What If…? Season 2, Echo, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Daredevil: Born Again on the small screen.

Version 1.0.2.0 is the fourth patch for the game since its release on March 28, which was met with complaints over numerous performance issues, bugs and glitches.

We at Naughty Dog and our partners at Iron Galaxy are closely watching player reports to support future improvements and patches,” Naughty Dog writes at the end of the patch notes.

“We are actively optimising, working on game stability, and implementing additional fixes which will all be included in regularly released future updates.”

Earlier this week the studio tweeted that it will be prioritising fixes for the PC game over any plans to get it running better on the Steam Deck.

“While we know many of you would like to play The Last of Us Part I on Steam Deck, we are prioritising fixes and patches before submitting it for verification,” it said at the time.

“We will keep you updated of its Steam Deck status as we continue to improve the PC version.”

The PC port of The Last of Us Part I has been heavily criticised for poor performance and frequent crashes, with Steam Deck players in particular noting major issues such as extremely low frame rates on the lowest settings.
