The long-awaited trailer for DC’s “Blue Beetle” movie is finally here, as an ancient artifact “the scarab,” takes hold of Jaime Reyes and transforms the teenager into a superhero.

The kicker is that Reyes’ “transformation” isn’t a solo affair as in most comic book origin stories, but he transforms into an armored superhero in front of his family, a Latino family nonetheless!

Upon his transformation, the suit thrusts Reyes into the atmosphere and the teenager soars into space within seconds while he ponders his fate.

“Cobra Kai” breakout and fan favorite Xolo Maridueña stars in the title role of Jaime Reyes in “Blue Beetle,” DC Studios’ first superhero movie centered on a Latino character.

Maridueña previously said that “Blue Beetle” is a combination of both a DC and Marvel superhero.

“He’s kind of like a fusion of Green Lantern and Iron Man,” Maridueña said. “He has a scarab from outer space that is attached to his body called Khaji da.”

In DC Comics, Blue Beetle is the superhero alter ego used by three different heroes, but the film will focus on Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes, the third character to assume the Blue Beetle mantle.

“Charm City Kings” director Angel Manuel Soto directed the superhero movie from a screenplay from Mexican writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, based on characters from DC.

“Blue Beetle” screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer also touched upon the effect of being a superhero in a Latino family.

“What would my mom do if an alien technology burrowed into my spine?” Dunnet-Alcocer said. “She would not think it’s cool. And for the Reyes family, this is terrible. ‘We’re going to get attention from American institutions, from the government, from military, from the police.’”

John Rickard and Zev Foreman are producing, with Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Garrett Grant serving as executive producers.

The newly released synopsis for the film is as follows: Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.

The film also stars Adriana Barraza (“Rambo: Last Blood,” “Thor”) as Jaime’s grandmother, Nana, Damían Alcázar (“Narcos,” “Narcos: Mexico”) as his father, Elpidia Carrillo (“Mayans M.C.,” the “Predator” films) as his mother, Bruna Marquezine (“Maldivas,” “God Save the King”) as Jenny Kord, Raoul Max Trujillo (the “Sicario” films, “Mayans M.C.”) as Carapax, with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (“Monarch,” “Dead Man Walking”) as Victoria Kord, and George Lopez (the “Rio and “Smurf” franchises) as Jaime’s Uncle Rudy. The film also stars Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories,” “Hocus Pocus 2”) as Jaime’s sister, Milagro, and Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”) as Dr. Sanchez.

History of the “Blue Beetle”

Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner in 2006, Jaime Reyes was introduced during the “Infinite Crisis” crossover event ahead of the launch of a new “Blue Beetle” in May 2006. Reyes is a working-class El Paso teenager devoted to his family and with no connections to superheroes prior to receiving his powers.

In the new film, Reyes now hails from Palmera City, which was first introduced in the recent DC comic book “Blue Beetle: Graduation Day.”

Jaime Reyes discovered the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school with two of his best friends Paco and Brenda, half-buried in a disused lot. Reyes took the scarab home, curious as to what it might be. That night, the scarab came alive grafted itself to the base of Jaime’s spine and provided him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor that can be modified to enhance his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings and shields.

When is “Blue Beetle” being released?

A Warner Bros. Pictures Presentation, a Safran Company Production, “Blue Beetle” soars into theaters only internationally beginning August 2023 and in North America August 18, 2023. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Quebec provincial police are investigating the suspicious deaths of a man and a woman in the province’s Lanaudière region over the weekend.

The Sûreté du Québec said Monday were contacted by a resident after not hearing from a 46-year-old man in Sainte-Julienne, located about 70 kilometres north of Montreal.

The man was found injured inside a residence in the area Friday evening. He later died in hospital, according to police.

The investigation into the man’s death led authorities to an uninhabited home in the Sainte-Julienne the next day. Police officers found the body of a 48-year-old woman during their search Saturday.

Police did not provide more details about her death, including whether or not there were signs of violence.

Public financial service company TMX Finance has disclosed suffering a data breach incident that exposed personally identifiable information (opens in new tab) (PII) on almost five million customers.

TMX Finance operates three subsidiaries: TitleMax, TitleBucks, and InstaLoan, all of which have been hit. TitleMax is a lending business, TitleBucks a car loans service, while InstaLoan is a personal loan service for people with poor credit scores.

Issuing a notification to affected individuals, TMX Finance said that whoever was behind the attack managed to get away with full customer names, birth dates, passport numbers, driver’s license numbers, federal/state identification card numbers, tax identification numbers, social security numbers, financial account information, phone numbers, postal addresses, and email addresses.

Data stolen in February

Overall, exactly 4,822,580 customers had been affected by the breach.

In the notification, TMX said that the breach occurred in early December 2022, but the company only spotted something was amiss on February 13 2023. It took the company two weeks to conclude its investigation and on March 1 said that the data was siphoned in the period between February 3 and February 14.

“On February 13, 2023, we detected suspicious activity on our systems and promptly took steps to investigate the incident,” the company says in the announcement. “Based on the investigation to date, the earliest known breach of TMX’s systems started in early December 2022.”

“On March 1, 2023, the investigation confirmed that information may have been acquired between February 3, 2023 – February 14, 2023.”

To address the issue, the company implemented additional endpoint protection and monitoring measures, and reset all employee accounts. It also gave all affected individuals 12 months of identity protection through Experian, free of charge.

TMX Finance is a Canadian firm that operates more than 900 stores in over fourteen US states.

There’s no word on who might be behind the attack.

If you’ve watched Tucker Carlson on Fox News at any point between 2018 and now, odds are pretty good that you’ve heard him say the words, “Shut up, racist!” Usually, they come as a form of mockery of Democrats. But John Oliver has an idea of what those outbursts really are.

Most often, Carlson uses these words when he claims that they are the response Democrats give to most any conversation a Republican tries to have with them. According to Carlson, when a conservative simply tries to have an actual discussion — though particularly about topics like immigration or twice-impeached former president Donald Trump — about their views, they’re immediately shut down by Dems saying, “Shut up, racist!”

But, like we said, Oliver had a different thought on what’s happening when Carlson breaks that phrase out.

“And now, the last remaining sliver of morality in Tucker Carlson’s head tries to give him some advice,” the voiceover boomed.

Indeed, Carlson says this phrase so often that John Oliver was able to put together a supercut during Sunday night’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” and that’s what followed.

In each clip, Carlson simply inserts “Shut up, racist” into his spiel as if it were an interjection, rather than prefacing it with something like “Instead, Democrats say…” or any other kind of explanation. As a result, the phrase seems spontaneous and, for the purposes of “Last Week Tonight,” like it is an inner voice breaking to the surface.

“The left doesn’t want to answer questions like that, or even have the conversation. Shut up, racist!” Carlson says in the first clip. “Instead they just declare that the current system is great.”

“Nobody wants to have that debate,” Carlson tells Lou Dobbs in another clip. “Shut up, racist!”

You can watch the full segment from “Last Week Tonight” in the video above.

Source: lunchtime departure for Trump flight

Donald Trump is expected to fly to New York around noon today, according to sources in Florida, ahead of his historic arraignment tomorrow on charges of covering up a hush money payment to the adult film star Stormy Daniels.

As the former president packs his overnight case this morning at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, there’s a lot swirling both inside and outside the Manhattan courtroom.

District court judge Juan Merchan is expected to rule imminently on a motion filed by several media outlets, including CNN, the New York Times and Washington Post, for permission to broadcast Tuesday afternoon’s hearing.

They also want Merchan to unseal the indictment against Trump, details of which are as yet unclear, other than it contains more than 30 charges and reportedly at least one felony for falsifying documents relating to the pay-off.

In support of the motion, lawyers for the media outlets insist:

The right of access is at its zenith when applied to the first ever indictment of a former US president.

Lawyers for the former president, meanwhile, say they are expecting Merchan to issue a gag order Monday, or at his arraignment, on all parties in the case, after Trump maintained a furious tirade against Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg over the weekend.

Such an order could substantially impact what Trump will have to say in comments he is scheduled to make from Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday evening, immediately after returning from New York.

As for today, Trump’s flight is expected to leave Palm Beach international airport at midday, and arrive at LaGuardia airport in New York about 3pm, reports said. He will spend the night at his Trump Tower apartment in Manhattan.

While we await further developments, take a read of my colleague Hugo Lowell’s account here of the ex-president’s plans to stay on offense:

Key events

Donald Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba has made a prickly appearance on CNN’s This Morning, insisting that a mugshot of her boss, something usually required of all defendants when they are arraigned in New York district court, would be merely “theatrics”.

Habba told host Don Lemon:

Mugshots are for people so that you recognize who they are. He’s the most recognized face in the world, let alone the country, right now, so there’s no need for that.

Alina Habba.

There was, CNN reported Monday, still uncertainty about whether Trump would be photographed. The network said there were fears that such an image would be leaked.

Habba accused Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, without evidence, of leaking details of the indictment to the media, calling it “30 to 34 counts of garbage”.

Bragg, she said, was “a woke DA who’s now bringing a misdemeanor, stacking it, and trying to make it a felony.”.

Things turned more hostile when Lemon challenged Habba’s assertion that she was only looking for tax documents when she allegedly rifled through classified papers allegedly stashed at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida:

I’m not in a deposition right now and I’m not going to continue this conversation.

Poll: Majority of Americans approve of Trump indictment

Six of 10 Americans say they approve of the indictment of Donald Trump for covering up a pay-off to a porn star, according to a CNN poll published Monday.

Contrasting the former president’s assertion of widespread anger and outrage, 60% say they agree with the decision by a Manhattan grand jury to bring charges.

Six in 10 approve of the indictment of Trump, a CNN poll finds, but most Americans say politics played at least some role in it, a CNN poll findshttps://t.co/QktM07rxJD

— CNN (@CNN) April 3, 2023

Democrats, unsurprisingly, are the biggest supporters, 94% approving, including 71% who say they “strongly approve”. Republicans have a 79% disapproval rate, with 54% “strongly disapproving”. Independents were 62% in favor.

Still, three-quarters of Americans say politics played at least some role in the decision to indict Trump, including 52% who said it played a major role, CNN found.

Good morning and happy Monday to all our politics blog readers. Reporters are on the ground at Palm Beach international airport, Florida, from where Donald Trump is expected to fly to New York later today for Tuesday’s district court arraignment for covering up a hush money payment to an adult movie star.

It’s a historic occasion any way you shake it. No sitting or past president has ever been indicted on any criminal charges, and this case brought by Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg is only one of four investigations under way into the twice-impeached former commander-in-chief.

Trump had, according to contrasting reports, either a “calm weekend” playing golf at his Trump International golf course in Florida, or a couple of days furiously bashing out rage-filled invective on social media while promising in expletive-laden rants to escalate his attacks on Bragg.

Much more of that to come today, please stick with us.

Here’s what else we’re watching today:

  • Joe Biden continues his Invest in America tour in Minnesota’s Hennepin county, where he will deliver remarks this afternoon praising his economic agenda for strong jobs growth, a surge in manufacturing and clean energy.

  • There’s no formal White House media briefing, but principal deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton will “gaggle” with reporters at lunchtime aboard Air Force One en route to Minnesota.

  • Former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson has thrown his hat into the ring for the Republican party’s 2024 election, hoping to cash in on Trump’s legal troubles and offering himself to moderate voters as a more palatable alternative.

  • It’s quieter in Washington DC, where Congress has begun its two-week Easter recess.

Ashwini Bhave made her debut in 1988 with the Marathi film Kalat Nakalat.

Ashwini Bhave worked in many popular films such as Henna, Saajan and Aankhen, among others.

Many Indian actresses who were at the peak of their careers have left the entertainment industry and settled abroad. Marriage and family responsibilities are often cited as reasons for these stars taking a break from their careers or leaving the industry altogether. One such actress is Ashwini Bhave.

Ashwini Bhave worked in the Hindi and Marathi film industries. She was born on May 7, 1972, in Mumbai. She made her acting debut in 1988 with the Marathi film Kalat Nakalat. She then appeared in a few more Marathi films before making her Bollywood debut with the film Henna in 1991 with Rishi Kapoor.

Ashwini went on to appear in several popular Bollywood films such as Sainik (1993), First Love Letter (1991), Bandhan (1998), and Jai Kishen (1994), among others. She is also known for her roles in Marathi films like Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi (1989) and Nishani Dava Angatha (1989). She has appeared alongside Salman Khan in Suryavanshi (1992), Sanjay Dutt in Saajan (1991) and Jeet (1996) and Govinda in Aankhen (1993). These are just a few examples of the many actors Ashwini Bhave has worked with during her career in the Hindi film industry.

Apart from acting, Ashwini Bhave has also worked as a playback singer for some of her films. However, after her marriage to a software engineer, Kishore Bopardikar in the late 1990s, she took a break from acting and moved to the United States with her husband.

In recent years, she has made a few appearances in Marathi films and television shows. Ashwini Bhave made a comeback to the film industry in 2016 with the Marathi film Bhay. She decided to return to films and has since appeared in several Marathi films.

Despite her hiatus, Ashwini Bhave has continued to maintain a strong connection with her fans and the film industry. In a 2016 interview, she mentioned that she was excited to return to acting and was open to working in both Marathi and Hindi films. Her comeback has been well-received by fans, and many are eagerly awaiting her next project.

The Cannes Film Festival has confirmed the world premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the news that was first revealed by Variety last week.

James Mangold and Harrison Ford will climb the steps of the Palais des Festivals on May 18 alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore and Mads Mikkelsen. The film will will screen out of competition.

The festival will also pay a special tribute to Harrison Ford for his career.

The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. This instalment will reportedly be Harrison Ford’s last time playing the titular character. Details of the film’s plot are being kept under wraps that are tighter than those of a mummy, but based on the trailer this one does find Dr. Jones facing off against former Nazis in a flashback sequence that uses de-aging technology to zap Ford back in time.

John Williams, who has scored each Indiana Jones adventure since the original “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981, has once again composed the score.

Mangold said: “In 1995, I was honored to come to Cannes with my first film ‘Heavy,’ as part of Director’s Fortnite. 28 years later, I am proud to return with a slightly larger spectacle. My legendary collaborators and I are very excited to share a brand new and final Indiana Jones adventure with you.”

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is set to be released in cinemas on June 28 in France and on June 30 in the U.S.

Ford has played some of the most iconic roles of the last 50 years including Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise and Rick Deckard in Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” (1982) and Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” (2017).

The newest trailer for the upcoming MCU series Secret Invasion dropped Sunday night, and with it came one of the first looks at an all-grown-up character from Captain Marvel, as played by Emilia Clarke.

Clarke’s role was kept under wraps throughout the production of Secret Invasion, only being revealed as G’iah, Talos‘ daughter from Captain Marvel grown up and seemingly on Earth, a couple of days before the trailer’s release.

Ben Mendelsohn will return as Talos in the show, finally paying off the endings of both Captain Marvel, regarding Talos and his family, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, regarding Talos posing as Nick Fury on Earth for some time.

Now, fans can see a glimpse at what G’iah has been up to with the first looks at Clarke in her role’s alien form.

Skrull Unveiled in New Photos

Playing a grown-up G’iah, Talos’ young daughter from Captain Marvel, Emilia Clarke made her first appearances in her character’s alien form in new images from Vanity Fair, as well as April 2’s Secret Invasion trailer.

Marvel Studios

This still from the newest series trailer — around one minute and 26 seconds in — shows Clarke, portraying G’iah in her human disguise.

As a Skrull, she can shape-shift into any human form. It is unknown if Clarke’s likeness is another character G’iah is adapting to look like, or the human form G’iah feels most closely resembles her true self.

Emilia Clarke Secret Invasion
Marvel Studios

Vanity Fair offered the first peek at G’iah in her natural, green humanoid-alien form, looking into a mirror.

G'iah Captain Marvel
Marvel Studios

G’iah’s Secret Invasion look seems like a natural progression from the last version of the character fans saw when G’iah was a young Skrull back in Captain Marvel. The looks of the young actor and Clarke match well.

What Might G’iah’s Role in Secret Invasion Be?

Given the first trailers for the series and the comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu Secret Invasion is based on, it’s safe to assume the Skrulls will play a large role in the series.

Talos occupies a high position among the Skrulls, as seen in Captain Marvel. Perhaps, while he was on Earth impersonating Nick Fury, his daughter took on some of his responsibilities. Now that the Skrulls’ and humans’ stories are converging once again, it may be time for father and daughter to reunite.

Additionally, G’iah’s last appearance saw her getting along well with a young Monica Rambeau. Perhaps sometime in the future, fans will be able to see the two reunite as adults — especially given Monica’s major role in The Marvels.

Secret Invasion will premiere on Disney+ on June 21.

If you’re a fan of our little green guy Yoshi, then you’re familiar with Poochy, the adorable little dog in the Yoshi games that give Yoshi a chance to ride a creature. Usually, Mario rides Yoshi before swiftly ditching him like yesterday’s toy. We would never ditch Poochy like that, though, and thanks to a new teaser image for the next Mario kart Tour track, we might be able to drive a little kart as Poochy.

Yoshi Fans Rejoice, It Looks Like Poochy Might Be Coming To Mario Kart Tour

The official Mario Kart Tour Twitter account revealed a screenshot of a new course players will be able to enjoy soon. However, eagle-eyed fans noticed something hidden in this photo. If you look closely underneath the red arrow on the left, you’ll notice our little pal Poochy driving a car and trying his goddamn best to catch up to the other racers.

While it’s not confirmation that Poochy is definitely in the game, Mario kart Tour has hidden stuff in past screenshots. So hopefully, this is another situation. While Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has started adding new characters to its game through the Booster Pass, it’s possible Poochy could make its debut in Mario Kart 8 as well.

Even if it doesn’t though, having the adorable little guy driving in Mario Kart Tour is a start. We have no idea what evil shenanigans Poochy is capable of. We might even witness a murder; it’s an exciting time.

Poochy first debuted in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Since then, Poochy has appeared in various other Mario and Yoshi titles like Yoshi’s Story, Tetris Attack, Yoshi’s Woolly World, and many more.

If Poochy is added to Mario Kart Tour, it sounds like we all have a new main to crush the competition with. how can you be mad at an adorable dog throwing a Blue Shell at you? It’s just adorable.

Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Cinema Speculation’: Autobiography? Encyclopaedia? Critiques?…Keep Speculating! Confined by time (1968-1981) and restricted to select genres, like revenge, gory violence, exploitation and blaxploitation, Quentin Tarantino’s 392-page hard-cover Hachette publication is a voyage of discovery that is not for the feeble-hearted or the purist. In baseball and cricketing terminology, he hits the ball all over the park. Though he was born in 1963, the (r…

Zwigato, Review: Wobbligato

Zwigato%202.jpg

Zwigato, Review: Wobbligato Too good to be true-life, Zwigato might have been inspired by true incidents. The narrative does try to convey that feel. At first, it sucks you in with its no blemish couple and their ideal family. But then the layers come off one by one. There are tropes galore, masquerading as plot points. Is the film narrating the story of a food delivery boy, with interesting twists and turns, or is it taking the delivery boy as a prototype and making him go through the motion…

Dasara%2C%201.jpg

One way of owning a film, an extension of the auteur theory, would be to name the film with your name preceding the title. Might sound quirky to some, but so what? It is his film, and he can call it Nani’s Dasara or whatever else he likes. But you do wonder why Telugu actor Nani chose to call it his Dasara when he has neither written nor directed it, not even produced it. The nomenclature is a reference to the Dasara (Dussehra) festival, which forms the climax of the story, in which case…

Marvel’s next series, Secret Invasion, has received its latest trailer, teasing another entry in Phase Five of the MCU.

The latest trailer for the upcoming Marvel series Secret Invasion has dropped, building even more anticipation for the Nick Fury-led series.

Marvel’s Secret Invasion will be a major turning point for the Nick Fury character, who has up to this point not had his own true showcase. Fury has certainly seen his share of loss and pain, which will play significantly into the series. On Secret Invasion, star Samuel L. Jackson said, “We don’t know who’s a friend, who’s the enemy…There’s a political aspect that kind of fits into where we are right now. Who’s okay, who’s not? What happens when people get afraid and don’t understand other people? You can’t tell who’s innocent and who’s guilty in this particular instance.”

Fury, of course, has been a recurring character throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Jackson playing the eyepatched, bad muthaf*ckin’ founder of the Avengers Initiative. Secret Invasion will be Fury’s third Marvel series. He has also appeared in 11 movies so far, including cameos (thus the technicality of Jackson being one of the highest-grossing actors ever), with The Marvels due out on November 10th.

The supporting cast of Marvel’s Secret Invasion also includes Ben Mendelsohn (returning as Talos), Cobie Smulders (S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill), Don Cheadle (James Rhodes), Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Christopher McDonald, and more. Secret Invasion is the first series of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five, to be later joined by season two of Loki, the sophomore season of What If…?, Ironheart, Echo, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Daredevil: Born Again.

Secret Invasion got its first trailer back in September at Disney’s D23 Expo, but with its release less than three months away, the hype is stronger than ever for the Marvel series and hopefully even Phase Five, which officially launched with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The six-episode Secret Invasion arrives on Disney+ on June 21st.

What did you think of the new Secret Invasion trailer? Are you excited for Marvel’s next TV endeavor? How do you think it will stack up against other series? Give us your thoughts below! And check out the new, official Secret Invasion poster below!

EXCLUSIVE: Independent Talent, the talent agency that boasts Jodie Comer and Bill Nighy among its clients, has revealed that it made £7.3M ($9M) selling its stake in Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle Films.

Independent Talent was an early investor in Sid Gentle, holding a 22.05% stake in the production outfit until last October, when BBC Studios took full control of the company.

Financial details of the BBC Studios deal were not disclosed at the time, but a financial filing by Independent Talent on UK Companies House has lifted the lid on the transaction.

Independent Talent pocketed £7.3M from the sale of its take, valuing Sid Gentle at £33.1M following the Emmy-winning success of Killing Eve.

BBC Studios owned 51% of Sid Gentle prior to last year’s deal, meaning it will have paid around £16M for the remaining 49% it did not previously own.

Since the transaction, Sid Gentle has gone on to secure a second season of Extraordinary, the Disney+ superhero series written by newcomer Emma Moran.

Independent Talent’s Companies House filing revealed its revenue stood at £43.2M in the 12 months to March 2022, which was up nearly 60% on £27.5M the previous year. Independent Talent’s pre-tax profit was £4.4M.

You want to know who’s the absolute worst? Joe from You.

Granted, I do enjoy the show. I have for four seasons, and have gotten some pretty interesting questions, ideas, and twists that have made the show even more fun to watch. That, partnered with the great acting from Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg, You is enjoyable to watch no matter how you feel about Joe. But let’s be honest, Joe is a pretty creepy dude.

And I’m not just talking about the fact that Joe kills people. Nah. Joe has a whole laundry list of evil things that he has done besides murder, and today, we’re going to talk about them, from Season 1, all the way to the end of Season 4 – and who knows? Maybe Season 5 will be adding some more despicable things to this. Let’s get into it.

You want to know who’s the absolute

Jodie Comer has caught the “stage bug.” Having triumphed in her debut performance in Prima Facie, she’s avidly seeking to follow up with another production in coming years.

“I’ll definitely do more theater,” the Killing Eve and Free Guy star told Deadline at the Olivier Awards after-party held at the Natural History Museum in Kensington, London just a hop, skip and a jump from the Royal Albert Hall, where earlier Sunday night the theater world’s luminaries gathered to give themselves a well-earned pat on the back.

The actress pointed to Prima Facie producer James Bierman and said, “I’m going to cling to him. I’ll follow him because he gave me this opportunity.”

Comer’s blistering performance as an attorney who defends rapists and is then sexually assaulted by a colleague has won her a stash of best actress hardware, including a statuette at the Olivier’s – the West End’s equivalent of the Tony Awards.

Gut feeling guided her during last year’s original run of Suzie Miller’s drama at the Harold Pinter Theatre. At one point in the play, Tessa, her character, leapt onto a table. “That was instinct,” she explained, noting how she wanted to give a sense of Tessa’s physicality.

Jodie Comer in Prima Facie at the Harold Pinter in London

Helen Murray

“As the run went on I became more and more fearless and learned more about myself, my emotions and my instincts because of playing her,” she added.

Comer’s father saw her first preview and final performance.” Dad was impressed. “He said: ‘You’ve become quicker,’” she laughed as she held court with friends on the edge of the museum’s makeshift dance floor.

Every so often she gently swayed to the beat but she wasn’t in total let-your-hair-down mode.

More than likely she was saving her energy for her flight back to New York to resume rehearsals for the Broadway production of Prima Facie, which starts previews at the Golden Theatre on April 11, with a gala opening night on April 23. The ten-week limited season ends June 18.

“We’ve done a week’s rehearsals but we need to hurry back to carry on where we left off,” she said.

Next moves

Bierman told us that he and Comer will discuss next moves once the actress completes the Broadway run and a set of film and TV commitments.

“I want to continue working with Jodie on projects for the theater when she’s ready for another go,” said Bierman. “She’s committed to the stage now. She’s sort of caught the bug.”

The Natural History Museum was heaving with humans, and dinosaurs. In one of the display rooms was a Titanosaurus, not roaming around, you understand, but in skeleton form. Upon entering, partygoers were introduced to the boney framework of a blue whale suspended from the ceiling of the Hintze Hall with all the stagecraft of the theatrical art form we’d just been celebrating.

Paul Mescal at the Royal Albert Hall

Baz Bamigboye/Deadline

One particular homo sapien was treated like a prime exhibit. His name? Paul Mescal. The actor finds it “creepy” that he attracts so much attention. If only he’d kept on his tuxedo at the party and not shown off a dress shirt that appeared to be sprayed on.

“I was hot,” smiled the star when we found him wandering around the vast main hall with a bunch of friends. His every move was being tracked by a legion of women and a few blokes.

The Olivier Award Best Actor trophy (known as the ‘Larry’ after theater giant Laurence Olivier) that Mescal had won for his searing Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams at the Almeida Theatre and now transferred to the Phoenix Theatre, was in his right hand.

“I’m not letting go of it, seriously. I’m keeping it close,” he said.

He’d love to play Kowalski on Broadway should the Rebecca Frecknall-directed production transfer there. But where will he find the time? The minute he completes the short season at the Phoenix he’ll be away to Morocco to flex his muscles as Lucius in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2.

Mescal has been building up his biceps for months in preparation for the buzzy feature. Then he’s got to quickly discard the muscular build in order to appear in WWI drama movie History of Sounds opposite Josh O’Connor (The Crown, God’s Own Country) for director Oliver Hermanus (Living). The role apparently requires more brain than brawn.

A Streetcar Named Desire won two other honors: Best Revival and Best Supporting Actress to Anjana Vasan for her Stella. Patsy Ferran’s electrifying Blanche DuBois was in the running for Best Actress — her portrait of southern gentility anchored the production but Comer took the prize on the night.

But Almeida Theatre shows had a pretty darn hot night, with the trophies for Streetcar and Will Keen wining Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Vladimir Putin in Peter Morgan’s play Patriots, which is directed by Almeida’s artistic chief Rupert Gould (Judy). Patriots transfers into the Noel Coward Theatre for a 12-week run from May 26.

Zubin Varla and Katie Brayben won for their roles in Tammy Faye for which Elton John provided the score. Some had hoped that the rock star might have performed a number or two at the after-party, but to be fair, he’d just played the first of ten gigs at the 02 on the south side of the River Thames at Greenwich.

“It was never on the cards,” said Gould who also directed Tammy Faye.

Jubilant scenes

Others had reasons to be cheerful too.

The Royal Shakespeare Company people were beyond jubilant with the big six it scored for its adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli classic animated feature My Neighbour Totoro. The show’s wins included Best Director for Phelim McDermott and Best Entertainment or Comedy Play. The RSC announced last week that My Neighbour Totoro will return to London’s Barbican for a 17-week second season from November 21.

The RSC’s rival the National Theatre took home two Olivier prizes, including Best Original Score. That went to Richard Hawley for the great musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge, which he shared with orchestrator Tom Deering.

Hawley gave a lively speech that involved a reminiscence of urinating at a posh public convenience when he was a child. Incomprehensible for sure, but the audience nonetheless cheered him on.

Deadline saw no sign of him at the Natural History Museum. He’d instead headed to Standing at the Sky’s Edge’s own private party at a the hip Laylow restaurant and club across town at the far end of Notting Hill.

The show, produced by the National and Rupert Lord’s Various Productions, was named Best Musical. Like the Tony Award’s equivalent gong, it’s a huge deal.

Beverley Knight had a big night as well, with her first ever Olivier for Best Supporting Actress in the musical Sylvia, celebrating the life of feminist activist Sylvia Pankhurst. Knight gave a rip-roaring account of herself when the show’s company performed a number at the awards. The singer-turned-actress had already appeared in a scene from Sister Act, which she starred in last year.

Hannah Waddingham at the Royal Albert Hall

Baz Bamigboye/Deadline

Ted Lasso star and awards host Hannah Waddingham was in her element as she watched the musical performances, using all of her will power not to jump in and join them.

She led the original opening number and we’d have enjoyed another but it wasn’t to be. That said, the live show was already way too long at roughly three and a half hours.

Perhaps next year the Society of London Theatre’s Olivier Awards sub-committee could cut the show back, but then where would they put more of Hannah Waddingham singing?

But he has placed under house arrest as a probe into human trafficking and rape allegations continues.

Since being released from the “hellhole” prison, Tate has shared a number of cryptic posts on social media.

In his latest rant on Twitter, Tate claimed he believes he could be shot.

He also shared a picture of himself with a thick, ungroomed beard – different from the clean shaven look he sported before his arrest.

Tate wrote: “I prepare my body to absorb the brutal kinetics of piercing lead.

“As all other silencing attempts fail, and stage 3 approaches – I anticipate a bullet will be the chosen utensil of pacification.”

Alongside the message, he shared a past tweet from mid-December that read: “If they kill me I love you all.”

Tate and his brother Tristan, 34, have been placed under house arrest for 30 days.

Both men and their two alleged “angels” – Georgiana Naghel and Luana Radu – remain under investigation in a sex trafficking and organised crime probe by Romanian cops.

Tate and his brother returned to their lavish compound in Pipera, Voluntari, on the outskirts of Bucharest amid a media circus.

They have been ordered to stay in the buildings where they live – unless they have permission from the courts to leave.

After being released, Tate posted a clip of him shirtless pacing back and forth in his home while smoking a cigar.

“Absolute clarity of mind. Real thoughts. Real plans. Vivid pain.” he said, in reference to his time behind bars.

And in a cryptic message, he added: “We must defeat Shaytan.”

Shaytan is an evil demonic spirit in Islam that tempts humans into sin.

Tate and his brother both deny all wrongdoing and no charges have yet been brought.

Controversial influencer Tate built up an image that appealed to teenage boys – creating an online empire that made him one of the most searched people on Google.

Masquerading as lifestyle advice, much of the content is considered highly sexist and is seen as promoting violence against women.

ANDREW Tate has shared a cryptic post

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” conjured up $38.5 million at the box office this weekend — a respectable figure given the movie was based on a tabletop role-playing game from the ’70s. And whether you’re an old-school D&D player (like this writer) or a newer fan (thanks to “Stranger Things”), “Honor Among Thieves” includes plenty of fan service.

Classic Roles With a Twist

In the tabletop game (and licensed video game adaptions), players take on different classes or jobs, the archetypes being fighter, cleric, thief and wizard. Amongst those archetypes may be variations; fighters can be rage-driven barbarians, or divine-infused paladins.

Each major character in “Honor Among Thieves” aligns with an existing D&D class: Michelle Rodriguez’s Holga is a barbarian with her favored weapon — a battle axe; Rege-Jean Page is a paladin who is almost comically virtuous.

It’s fun seeing these classes and their abilities come to life on the big screen, including some more obscure ones like Chris Pine’s storytelling bard and Sophia Lillis’s shapeshifting druid.

“Honor Among Thieves” also gives them interesting backstories — Page’s paladin is cursed with dark Thayan magic, Lillis’s druid is a tiefling raised among elves — that prevent them from being too cookie-cutter.

Fantastic Beasts

Sophia Lillis plays Doric in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves from Paramount Pictures and eOne.

“Honor Among Thieves” has a terrific bestiary that includes classic monsters like fire-breathing dragons (one very overweight one named Themberchaud) and re-animated skeletons (who provide more humor than horror).

But there are also the intellect devourers, which resemble giant brains with dog legs, displacer beasts, six-legged predator cats that cast illusions, and gelatinous cubes, giant jellies that slowly dissolve anyone who gets trapped within them. And our personal favorite, the mimic. The mimic looks like a treasure chest but is really a monstrous mouth.

Among the humanoid races, there are the aarakocra or bird-men, used to great comedic effect in the opening and ending scenes, dragonkin, halflings, and even a brief appearance by tabaxi or cat-men (Page’s paladin rescues a young tabaxi child who was eaten by a sahuagin).

Famous Names

“Honor Among Thieves” name drops several notable characters from “Dungeons & Dragons” lore.

Justice Smith’s sorcerer Simon is descended from the legendary wizard Elminster. And there are several references to another wizard — Mordenkainen. Mordenkainen created many spells, including the arcane seal in Castle Never’s vault.

Famous Places

In addition to famous names, “Honor Among Thieves” takes audiences on a journey around the continent of Faerun. It starts with Pine and Rodriguez’s characters escaping a prison in Icewind Dale, with much of the plot taking place in the city of Neverwinter. There’s also the mention of rich men from Waterdeep and references to Baldur’s Gate. All are well-known destinations in D&D and actually have video games named after them.

Spectacular Spells

Magic is an integral part of D&D.

In “Honor Among Thieves,” we see Simon the sorcerer and Sofina the wizard duel with a variety of magical spells.

There are the usual, self-explanatory mainstays like lightning bolt and time stop. But Sofina utilizes spells of a more exotic variety, including Evard’s black tentacles (which summons writhing arms to trap victims), Otiluke’s resilient sphere (which traps victims in a bounding ball) and meteor swarm.

To see these spells come to life on the big screen is a delight to knowledgeable fans.

Throwback Tribute

“Honor Among Thieves” includes a wonderful throwback tribute to the “Dungeons and Dragons” animated series that ran from 1983-85.

When the heroes enter the Neverwinter arena tournament, they see other combatants. One group is dressed exactly like the characters from the animated series.

You can see the classic characters — as well as the aforementioned displacer beast, mimic and gelatinous cube — in the clip below:

One tiny gripe

“Honor Among Thieves” uses lots of magical items — notably a helm of disjunction and hither-tither staff — to push the plot along. These items don’t exist in classic D&D, though they have close counterparts, i.e. a rod of cancellation could have the same effect as the helm. Only D&D purists would nitpick at this!

So if you’re a casual or hardcore fan of Dungeons & Dragons, there’s lots of easter eggs and visual references to enjoy.

Even if you’re not, enjoy the action-adventure and this A-list cameo.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is playing now only in theaters.

Amidst its biggest annual show, WrestleMania, WWE may have completed its search for a new owner as Vince McMahon’s company is close to a deal to be sold to Endeavor for $9.3 billion, under which it would be moved into a new publicly traded company with Ultimate Fighting Championship, according to news reports.

CNBC was first to report that the top pro wrestling and mixed martial arts promotions in the world would both be operated under a new joint company led by Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel. McMahon, who briefly stepped down from WWE this past July after the Wall Street Journal exposed years worth of hush money payments he made to several women to keep quiet about affairs and sexual misconduct, would serve as executive chairman of the new company. Endeavor will get 51% of the new company while WWE shareholders would split the remaining 49%.

UFC President Dana White would maintain his position in the new company while current WWE CEO Nick Khan would serve as WWE president. Khan took over as co-CEO alongside McMahon’s daughter, Stephanie, but became the sole CEO after she departed the company upon her father’s return this past January. Stephanie McMahon’s husband, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, has taken over as the creative head of WWE programming, though McMahon has been reported by Wrestling Observer to have remained involved with the development of this year’s WrestleMania since returning.

While the reported structure would keep McMahon involved in the day-to-day running of the company he turned into a global empire, it would end WWE’s status as a family-operated business dating back to its founding as the Capitol Wrestling Corporation by McMahon’s father, Vincent J. McMahon, in 1953.

McMahon bought the company from his father in 1982 and transformed pro wrestling’s territorial system into a made-for-television nationwide phenomenon driven by WrestleMania and larger-than-life stars like Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper and Randy Savage. In the years that followed, champions like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dave Bautista and John Cena would turn their stardom in WWE into crossover success as movie stars.

Since news of McMahon’s interest in selling WWE became public in January, the company’s stock has surged 33% since the start of the year and ended this past week at $91.26/share. WWE has a reported market value of $6.8 billion, with this year’s WrestleMania in Los Angeles likely to pass the event’s all-time revenue record set last year at $206.5 million.

If the deal is completed, one of the first orders of business for WWE under Emanuel’s leadership would be to negotiate new media rights deals, as the current ones with NBCUniversal and Fox are up in 2024. NBCUniversal airs the company’s flagship show “Monday Night Raw” and its developmental series “NXT” on USA and hosts the WWE Network with archival content and live premium events like WrestleMania on Peacock, while Fox broadcasts “Friday Night Smackdown” at a rate of $205 million per year.

In an interview with The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast, Nick Khan said that WWE is open to returning to a pay-per-view format for its premium events after ending it in 2014 with the launch of WWE Network, though he said that it would be at a lower price than the company sold the events at before launching the streaming service.

Endeavor did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

17 Times Movies And TV Lied About

According to MCU songwriting team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, one of WandaVision‘s songs was originally intended for a Disney movie.

Since Marvel Studios’ original Disney+ series relied on a television sitcom format, theme songs played a huge role in the show and its success.

Disney tapped Frozen and Coco songwriting duo, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, to pen WandaVision‘s catchy sitcom themes; but now it seems that classic television wasn’t their only source of material.

WandaVision Songwriters Recycled Their Own Disney Song

Marvel

In talking with the D23 Inside Disney podcast, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez explained how they adapted an unused Disney song for WandaVision.

When asked about working on the now-canceled animated Disney musical, Gigantic, and whether they’re able to use past songs on new projects, Robert Lopez confirmed that “We actually did” and one Gigantic song made its way into “this show called WandaVision:”

“That’s a really interesting question. We actually did… Luckily enough, the songs went back to us after ‘Gigantic.’ We cleared it with all the legal-ness of it and we realized we were allowed to use them. We haven’t used many of them, but we did use two of them. One, we used in this show called ‘WandaVision.'”

Lopez went on to share that the Gigantic tune became WandaVision‘s Episode 3 theme song, “We Got Something Cooking:”

“A little ditty that we wrote for ‘Gigantic’ and we just took the tune, and the chords, and it became [‘We Got Something Cooking.’] … That’s from ‘Gigantic.’ And also, there’s a song called ‘These Are Your Rights’ and it’s from a Netflix special the Obama’s produced–”

Gigantic was an animated musical set in Spain and followed Jack as he discovered an 11-year-old female giant living in a world of giants within the clouds.

Gigantic concept art
Disney

The film, as well as Kirsten Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez’s involvement, was first announced at the 2015 D23 Expo. Gigantic was officially canceled in 2017.

Episode 3 of WandaVision was set in the 1970s and its “We Got Something Cooking” intro was inspired by shows of that era and particularly The Brady Bunch.

The title seemingly referred to Wanda and Vision preparing for the birth of their twins, Tommy and Billy.

Gigantic Found New Life in the MCU

It’s fascinating to learn that WandaVision‘s songwriters actually adapted a scrapped Disney tune into a ’70s-inspired theme for an MCU series.

However, that’s far from the only feat this husband and wife team tackled for WandaVision.

The two penned seven different themes for the Marvel show, 6 of which had to capture the narrative of the episode while also reflecting a different decade of television.

The other song was a theme for a single character and eventual Emmy winner, “Agatha All Along,” a tune Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confessed he “would go around singing.”

Given the songwriting’s team success, it wouldn’t be surprising if Marvel Studios calls on them again.

But in the meantime, it’s great to learn how that an unheard song from the canceled Gigantic found new life in the MCU and contributed to WandaVision‘s hit playlist.

All episodes of WandaVision are available to stream on Disney+.

The Flash movie is set to explore the DC multiverse, yet Barry Allen’s time travel powers in the upcoming movie contradict three DC films. After CW’s The Flash show extensively dealt with how dangerous time travel can be in the DC Universe, The Flash movie will now explore that part of Barry Allen’s mythos on a multiversal scale. While 2023’s The Flash is the first theatrical Flash movie, the DCEU’s Barry Allen has had multiple appearances already.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

After making a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the Flash properly debuted in Justice League, a film that skipped Barry Allen’s origin story. A later cut of the film, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, also known as “the Snyder Cut,” presented an extended look at the Flash, incorporating Iris West and Barry’s time travel powers. Between two previous Justice League cuts and an upcoming DC Universe reset, The Flash has some complicated lore questions to solve.

Related: 5 Ways DC’s 2023 Movies WILL Be Important To The DC Universe’s Future

The Flash’s Time Travel Doesn’t Fit With BvS & Zack Snyder’s Justice League

The first two The Flash movie trailers show Barry Allen going back in time to revisit the day Nora Allen, Barry’s mother, died. The Flash’s official synopsis also confirms that the Flash will go back in time, which is obviously expected to go wrong and set up a Flashpoint-inspired story in which Barry finds himself in a different reality. However, the idea of Barry Allen traveling to the past and interacting with it does not fit with the DCEU’s previous time travel examples – one from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the other from Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

In Batman v Superman, the Flash appears to Bruce Wayne from the future with a warning about Superman. At that moment, Barry Allen appeared from a portal, which, according to director Zack Snyder (via YouTube), was one of two portals opened by future Cyborg. The Flash picked the wrong portal, which is why Barry appears to Bruce Wayne before the Justice League was formed. In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Barry explains that time works differently around him when he achieves a certain speed. Both times the Flash uses “time travel” in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Barry was simply rewinding time rather than traveling through it.

The Flash Movie’s Time Travel May Prove 2017’s Justice League Isn’t Canon

The Flash entering the Speed Force in Justice League Snyder Cut

The Flash movie also seems to be contradicting the theatrical cut of Justice League. Released in 2017, Justice League does not feature time travel. In fact, Barry Allen does not mention time travel at all during 2017’s Justice League. In the Snyder Cut, however, Barry discusses his time travel powers with Bruce Wayne before using them twice during the four-hour cut of Justice League – when activating the Mother Box to resurrect Superman and when fighting Steppenwolf at the end. As far as it has been established, 2017’s Justice League is the canon one. However, one The Flash trailer moment suggests otherwise.

Barry and Bruce discuss the possibility of Barry going back in time to save Nora Allen in The Flash‘s trailer, which would not quite work if Batman wasn’t already aware of the Flash’s time travel powers. Likewise, if the Flash is considering going back in time to change the past, then Barry must be somewhat experienced with his time travel powers already. Should that be the case, then Zack Snyder’s Justice League works as a better The Flash setup than the theatrical cut, which did not incorporate time travel. The Flash’s powers are complicated, and it seems like there are at least three DCEU versions of time travel.

The Flash movie is set to explore

Both companies started by making simple accessories. Now they want to master the complicated ones.

After making a wide variety of cages and camera accessories, SmallRig has moved into lighting and wireless follow-focus units. Viltrox, on the other hand, started with lens adapters and focal reducers before moving on to cinema lenses.

Now, both companies are taking a stab at making a better V-mount battery for your cinema camera with the SmallRig VB mini line and the new Viltrox BV-99.

But do these new tools have enough reliability and features to give filmmakers a reason to switch from trusted brands? Let’s get into it.

Small Rig, Smart Power

The SmallRig VB99 and VB50 mini V-mount batteries came out in July of 2022. To make these new kids on the block attractive to creatives, SmallRig focused on making the battery smart and keeping it compact.

SmallRig’s battery management system (or BMS) chip was designed to take up less space while supporting multiple charging protocols. This includes bi-directional USB-C PD fast charging at a max of 45W for the VB50 and 65W for the VB99.

Marketing jargon aside, you are getting a modern battery with a modern feature setCredit: SmallRig

The SmallRig VB99 is rated at 99Wh, giving you 14.8V and 6.7Ah. The VB50 comes in at 50Wh, with 14.8V and 3.4Ah. Both have one D-Tap port that gives you in and out, with dual DC ports on the bottom giving you 8V and 12V. That’s 24W and 36W, respectively.

Next to that, creatives will also find USB-C and USB Type-A ports for running those small follow focus units or charging their smartphone. To top it all off, you’ll find a nice little screen on the back giving you battery percentages.

The standard size of both batteries is also much smaller than your usual V-Mount fare. According to SmallRig, at least 30% smaller. With how small cameras are getting these days, like the RED Komodo and Z Cam, compact seems to be the way of the future. But if you need more power, you can always go for the VB155, which will give you 155Wh.

SmallRig VB99 Battery
Besides the D-Tap and V-Mount connector, these are all the ports you getCredit: SmallRig

From Lens Adapters to Power Delivery

The Viltrox BV-99, on the other hand, only comes in one flavor: 99Wh at 14.8V. Having said that, it has many of the same features (with a little extra) as the SmallRig competition.

A nice little screen on the back gives you all the necessary battery info you’d need, while each side hosts a single D-Tap port, giving you two instead of the one from SmallRig. At the top, you’ll also find a USB-C (with the same PD fast charging feature) and USB Type-A port.

The size is also pretty compact, which is a great fit for smaller cinema cameras, monitors, and lighting tools you may be using.

Viltrox BV-99 v-mount battery
No DC ports, but you get an extra D-TapCredit: Viltrox

Same Battery, Different Shell?

With how similar the SmallRig VB99 mini and Viltrox BV-99 are, we wouldn’t blame you if you assumed they’re the same tech but in a different shell. While the components may be similar, if not identical, creatives are getting a different flavor from each company.

What does that even mean? Well, you have different design language and exterior components. Creatives will also get different ports depending on which brand they chose.

But which do you choose? That all depends on your needs.

If you need more D-Tap ports, the Viltrox will be a solid choice.

Need more DC ports or a small Watt-hour? Go for SmallRig.

But are they disruptive? Yeah, a little. For the price that both the SmallRig and Viltrox are going for, you’re getting a few extra ports and quality-of-life features (like the design and screen) that other brands just don’t have. It’s not revolutionary, but it sure gives the competition something to think about.

While these batteries may be attractive on the outside, how they perform on the inside remains to be seen. When it comes to electricity, reliability, safety, and longevity are the cornerstones of a good product. Figuring out how both SmallRig and Viltrox will fare in the long term will take some time. However, we are hearing some good things!

What do you think about these two batteries? Would this be something you’d want in your toolkit?

Let us know in the comments!

In the run-up to its Canneseries world premiere, Movistar+ has shared in exclusivity with Variety the international trailer to “The Left Handed Son” (“El hijo zurdo”), the directorial debut of Rafael Cobos, writer of Alberto Rodríguez international hit “Marshland” banner TV series “The Plague.”

Cobos also wrote Rodriguez’s memorable episode in “Offworld,” a market screening at this year’s MipTV.

Movistar+, which produces with José Antonio Félez’s Atipica Films, its partner on “The Plague” and “Prison 1977,” has also announced the release date for “The Left-Handed Son,” whose episodes will all be made available on Movistar+, Spain’s biggest SVOD/pay TV platform, on April 27.

Distribution outside Spain on “The Left-Handed Son” is handled by Movistar+ International.

A six-part short format series, it reps Movistar+’s fourth title at Canneseries in six editions. “The Left Handed Son” delivers a probing, fast-paced psychological thriller which adds further weight to the argument that some of the most interesting scripted work in Spain and Latin America is being carried out in miniseries: Think Pablo Fendrick’s “Amongst Men” and Gustavo Pizzi’s “The Last Days of Gilda.”

It kicks off with Lola, late thirties, receiving a phone-call from the police: Her son, Lorenzo, knocking 18, is being held in custody. When she gets to the police station, she’s told that he’s beaten up a Moroccan kid, nearly killing him. Why? “Because your son’s a skinhead,” an officer tells him.

Lola had no idea. Confronting Lorenzo, her verbal drubbing is met by his sullen hostility. Half way home, he throws himself from her car; she chases him through a park, but he escapes, ignoring her calls.

That scene’s glimpsed in a trailer that nails some of the major questions asked by this intense mother-son relationship thriller,  beginning with how Lola and Lorenzo have become so estranged – as well as teasing some possible answers.

“The first time my mother told me I wasn’t normal, I was six years old. She didn’t like that I was left-handed,” she recalls in an initial trailer voiceover.

One explanation in a series whose psychological good sense consists in offering a broad range of answers is captured by the trailer. Sensing that she doesn’t live up to her mother’s expectations, nor to her own of perfect motherhood, living in a city which literally workshops the perfect mother, Maria, Lola abandons herself to drink.

“Apples don’t fall far from the tree,” Lorenzo says in the trailer, before throwing himself out of the car. An image reflection of his mother  – a link caught literally in a shot of Lola observing him in custody through a glass window – he suffers the same sense of abandonment – “desamparo,” a key word in the series – and turns his fury at her on the world.

“Rafael Cobos is one of the most gifted and talented writers I have ever met. I have been privileged to work with him since ‘The Plague’ and I am very excited to have worked with him again in his first project as director and showrunner, ‘The Left-Handed Son,’ a unique and gripping show, full of emotions and insights on the relationship between a mother and her son, and a new take in his already diverse and original career,” said Domingo Corral, Movistar+ director of original fiction.

“The Left-Handed Son” stars María Leon, who stunned Spain with her first major movie lead performance, in 2011’s “The Sleeping Voice,” winning best actress at the San Sebastián Festival and a Spanish Academy Goya.

Variety chatted to Cobos about “The Left Handed Son” which, despite its short format – most episodes weigh in at 20-25 minutes – is no minor work at all.

”The Left-Handed Son” is described, I think quite rightly, as a psychological thriller. It’s also a story of absent parents – the father who’s abandoned his family to go into politics, the mother who drinks to escape her sense of worthlessness – and the sense of abandonment which this leaves in a son, whose violence becomes a classic call for attention. Or maybe I wrong? But could you comment?

Exactly. It contrasts with my prior screenplays, which were fundamentally based on incidents, events sparked by real events where characters often have to carve out a way forward through small details dissolved in the dramatic action – the indisputable driver which many times comes to signify the plot. Beginning to develop “The Left-Handed Son,” I decided that characters would for me determine events, surprising me, becoming the basic driver of its conflict, and not the other way round. And that, from this starting point, I’d apply the very same tools of tension and rhythm which I’d used in thrillers, injecting them as the story plays out. In other words, I inverted completely my work method, going against myself.

Some of the most interesting recent fiction work in Latin America and Spain, for my money, are being created in the mini-series series format. I sense you wanted to use a shorter format because of the intensity of the story-telling which is often working on multiple levels at one and the same time. But could you comment?

I’ll level up. Yes, I wanted “The Left-Handed Son” to be short format. Because of its impact, concentration, intensity. I’ve always defended narratives that go straight to the point, their core. The editing process, in any case, led to an ever shorter, more frenetic, cut, getting rid of anything that wasn’t fiber. I insist: If I’d been able to go on editing, I would have done. It was as if I was composing a kind of haiku: Diminutive in its form and giant in its meaning.

One thing you bring to the series which is not in the original novel is the music. We can hear snatches of “La Retama,” from Bronquio and Nita, in the teaser. Could you describe your choice of music and how it fits into the narrative?

At first, I only had the music of Julio de la Rosa: Beautiful, lyrical, but underscoring subtext, making it occasionally too obvious. The songs came in to hide this very subtext, lightening the narration and giving it a different texture, another space for the viewer.

In the run-up to its Canneseries world

Marvel released the Secret Invasion trailer and poster for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Disney+ series. The espionage series will debut on June 21, with episodes then airing weekly on the streamer.

“Set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls,” says the synopsis. “Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.”

Check out the Secret Invasion trailer and poster below:

Secret Invasion stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.

Ali Selim directs the series and executive-produces, along with fellow executive producers Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali Selim, Kyle Bradstreet, and Brian Tucker. Bradstreet is also the head writer, and Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams, and Brant Englestein serve as co-executive producers.

15 years after he launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the post-credits scene of “Iron Man,” Samuel L. Jackson will get to take center stage as Nick Fury in the upcoming Disney+ series “Secret Invasion,” which just released a new trailer on Sunday. Disney also announced that the show will premiere on June 21.

As MCU fans saw with “Captain Marvel” in 2019, Nick Fury has had an alien ally for decades in Talos (Ben Mendelson), the leader of a sect of aliens called Skrulls who have taken refuge on Earth after their homeworld was destroyed.

But as seen in the new trailer, that sect is becoming a threat thanks to rogue Skrull named Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who has formed his own group apart from Talos and believes the best way for the Skrulls to survive is to use their shapeshifting powers to infiltrate Earth’s government and take what they need.

Fury would like to think that he has allies to take on this new threat. Along with Talos, the director of SHIELD has his top agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) at his side and Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle), who has put away the War Machine suit since Tony Stark’s death and has become a White House aide.

But with the Skrulls able to deceive everyone into divulging their deepest secrets by disguising themselves, Fury has no idea who to trust.

“Secret Invasion” is rooted in the months-long event series that ran in Marvel Comics in 2008, but which replaces the superheroes of Marvel lore with a political espionage thriller angle reminiscent of “Homeland” or John le Carre’s novels. The series will also star “Game of Thrones” alum Emilia Clarke as Talos’ daughter G’iah and Oscar winner Olivia Colman as top MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth.

Martin Freeman will also appear as former CIA agent Everett K. Ross, who was last seen in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” fleeing his former employers clutches after siding with Wakanda over U.S. interests.

Ali Selim directs the series and executive-produces, along with fellow executive producers Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali Selim, Kyle Bradstreet and Brian Tucker. Kyle Bradstreet is also the head writer, and Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams and Brant Englestein serve as co-executive producers.

“Secret Invasion” hits Disney+ on June 21.

Ed Sheeran dethrones Miley Cyrus on the U.K. singles chart as “Eyes Closed” (Atlantic) sprints to No. 1.

With “Eyes Closed,” the first single lifted from Sheeran’s forthcoming album Subtract, the Englishman lands his 14th best-seller on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published March 31, and climbs the all-time leaderboard.

In doing so, “Eyes Closed” ends the 10-week reign of “Flowers”. Cyrus’ hit is stopped one week short of equaling Tones And I’s 11-week run with “Dance Monkey,” which remains the longest-running leader by a female solo artist.

Sheeran now equals the 14 career No. 1s accumulated by Cliff Richard and Westlife, slotting into equal third on the all-time list. Only Elvis Presley (with 21) and the Beatles (17) have more U.K. No. 1s, the Official Charts Company reports.

Also, “Eyes Closed” becomes Sheeran’s 41st Official top 10 single, good enough for fifth on the list of all-time top 10 appearances.

After two-and-a-half months, Cyrus’ “Flowers” (Columbia) loses its crown, dipping 1-2. It continues to rack-up a marketing-leading volume of streams, the OCC reports.

Further down the list, rising Afrobeats star Libianca hits a new peak position with “People” (5K), up 5-4, while BTS member Jimin scores a new mark with “Like Crazy” (BigHit Entertainment). It’s new at No. 8, for the first top 10 appearance by a solo member of BTS. “Like Crazy” debuts just a week after Jimin bagged a solo career best by a BTS member with “Set Me Free Pt. 2,’ which arrived at No. 30.

Finally, 22-year U.K. based artist Paris Paloma bags her first appearance on the Official Chart with “Labour” (Nettwerk). The folk ballad, a viral rallying call against misogyny, starts at No. 29.

We have a series.

After losing the first two games of their Ontario Hockey League playoff series, and being outscored 16-5 in the process, the Hamilton Bulldogs skated to a 6-3 victory over the Barrie Colts Sunday night.

The Dogs lost defenceman Florian Xhekaj to a game misconduct five minutes into the game for a check to the head of Barrie’s Brandt Clarke, the OHL’s playoff scoring leader.

Artem Grushnikov had the 3,521 fans at FirstOntario Centre on their feet when he opened the scoring for Hamilton 6:56 into the game and had the hometown crowd celebrating again when he slid the puck down the length of the ice, twice, for empty net insurance markers.

Callum Chisholm evened the score at 1-1 when he beat Hamilton goalie Matteo Drobac with 5:49 left to go in the first period and Jacob Frasca scored 1:08 later to give the Colts their first lead of the contest.

The advantage, however, was short lived as Hamilton’s Adrian Rebelo banged home a rebound to make it 2-2 at 16:17 of the first frame.

The Dogs doubled down midway through the second period when Lawson Sherk and Cole Brown scored 18 seconds apart to give Hamilton a 4-2 lead.

Barrie battled back 2:07 later when Chisholm buried his second goal of the game to cut Hamilton’s lead to 4-3.

Soon after, the Colts lost Clarke when he was given a game misconduct for slamming into Sherk with a knee-on-knee hit at the Bulldogs blueline but Hamilton failed to capitalize on the ensuing five-minute power-play.

The Bulldogs will host Game 4 Tuesday night.

Regal owner Cineworld has entered into a restructuring support agreement and a backstop commitment agreement with lenders that will, if approved, see it emerge from bankruptcy.

The exhibition giant also noted today that it has received non-binding proposals for some or all of the group’s assets but determined that absent an all-cash bid significantly in excess of the value established under the proposed restructuring, it will cease seeking a buyer for its businesses in the U.S., UK and Ireland. The chain will continue to consider the proposals received for its “rest of world” business. A process is underway with the bidders for those holdings to assess whether an acceptable sale transaction can be completed.

If the proposed restructuring is implemented, it is expected to reduce the group chapter 11 companies’ funded indebtedness by approximately $4.53 billion, principally through lenders under the legacy facilities receiving equity in the reorganized group in exchange for the release of their claims.

It would also raise $800 million in aggregate gross proceeds through a fully backstopped equity offering to the so-called “Legacy Lenders” and a direct equity offering to certain of them. The restructuring would further provide $1.46 billion in new debt financing to the group chapter 11 companies upon their emergence from the chapter 11 cases.

The proceeds of the rights offering and the exit facility will be used to, among other things: repay in full the approximately $1.94 billion debtor-in-possession financing facility entered into by the group chapter 11 companies and fund costs associated with the the process and go-forward business operations.

Cineworld CEO Mooky Greidinger called the restructuring agreement “a vote of confidence in our business” which “significantly advances Cineworld towards achieving its long-term strategy in a changing entertainment environment. With a growing slate of blockbusters and audiences returning to cinemas in increasing numbers, Cineworld is poised to continue offering moviegoers the most immersive cinema experiences and maintain its position as the ‘Best Place to Watch a Movie’.”

Consistent with the Company’s announcement on February 24, in light of the level of existing debt that is expected to be released under the plan, the proposed restructuring does not provide for any recovery for holders of Cineworld’s existing equity interests.

Cineworld said it expects to emerge from the chapter 11 cases during the first half of 2023, but any sale transaction, among other things, may delay that. The group said it remains committed to emerging from the cases “as expeditiously as possible.” The plan still needs to be approved by the requisite threshold of the chapter 11 companies as well as the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Cineworld filed for bankruptcy last fall in that court.  It has allowed Regal to shutter theaters and renegotiate leases with landlords. Last week, Judge Marvin Isgur said he was sticking with an April 20 date to go over the plan and set May 26 as a confirmation date.

The lenders in question hold and control approximately 83% of the embattled company’s term loans due in 2025 and 2026, and a revolving credit facility due 2023.

Twitter had said it was going to start removing the blue check-marks of legacy verified users starting April 1, so that only people who paid Elon Musk’s company $8 or $11 per month would have the badge going forward.

On Sunday, Twitter did something different: It updated the language in the description of verified users so that now you can’t tell who is paying Musk for the blue check-mark — and who isn’t. The text for both Twitter Blue subscribers and legacy verified accounts now reads, “This account is verified because it’s subscribed to Twitter Blue or is a legacy verified account.”

Previously, the verification badge for those who paid for Twitter Blue had a description that said, “This account is verified because it’s subscribed to Twitter Blue.” In addition, accounts verified under Twitter’s previous regime — as being considered notable and authentic — had formerly said, “This is a legacy verified account. It may or may not be notable,” which was wording Musk boasted he’d come up with himself.

Following the change, some legacy verified Twitter users wanted to make it clear that they aren’t in fact paying for Twitter Blue.

“I just want you all to know that I have never paid Apartheid Elmo $11 for a check, and never will,” tweeted Kahana Cauley, an author and TV writer (“The Daily Show With Trevor Noah”).

Separately, Twitter has launched a program for businesses and organizations to charge $1,000 per month for verification badges (gold for brands, companies and nonprofits; gray for governments), the company will waive that fee for its 500 largest advertising clients and the 10,000 most-followed brands, companies and organizations that have been previously verified (a group that includes Variety‘s Twitter account).

On Sunday, the gold verification badge for the New York Times on Twitter was removed. That came after an exchange on Twitter, in which Musk, replying to someone noting that the publication said it would not pay for verification, say, “Oh ok, we’ll take it off then.” Later Sunday, Musk tweeted, “NY Times is being incredible hypocritical here, as they are super aggressive about forcing everyone to pay their subscription.”

The New York Times reaffirmed Sunday that it is not planning to pay the monthly fee for verification of its institutional Twitter accounts, nor will it reimburse reporters for the verification of personal accounts.

There was no backing down from Marjorie Taylor Greene during her “60 Minutes” interview Sunday night on CBS, as she doubled down on accusing Democrats of being pedophiles and calling the scrutiny on her past comments unfair.

“They are not pedophiles. Why would you say that?” correspondent Lesley Stahl asked.

“Democrats support — even Joe Biden, the president himself — supports children being sexualized and having transgender surgeries. Sexualizing children is what pedophiles do to children,” the Georgia Republican replied.

“Wow. OK,” a visibly taken aback Stahl responded. “But my question really is, can’t you fight for what you believe in without all that name-calling and without the personal attacks?”

Greene answered by turning the question around on the Dems. “I would ask the same question to the other side, because all they’ve done is call me names and insult me non-stop since I’ve been here, Lesley. They call me racist. They call me– sen– antisemitic, which is not true. I’m not calling anyone names. I’m calling out the truth, basically.”

The controversial Congressperson who has promoted far-right conspiracy theories also sidestepped Stahl’s questions about whether she apologized to Nancy Pelosi for liking a comment on her Facebook page saying that the former House speaker should get a “bullet to the head,” something that she claimed was done by someone on her social media team.

“I stand for what’s on my social media. But at times not– you’re not always in control. We have all kinds of people that work on our social media,” she said.

Stahl pressed further, asking her about her claims that the Parkland school shooting was a “false flag.” Greene got heated and denied that she said such things: “No, I’ve never said that. School shootings are horrible. I don’t think it’s anything to joke about.”

But Stahl threw her a curve ball, saying that the “60 Minutes” fact checkers confirmed that she did say that. Greene didn’t like that and lashed out.

“Have you fact-checked all my statements from kindergarten through 12th grade? And in college? And as I’ve paid my taxes, and never broken a law, and the only– I got a few speeding tickets. Do we need to talk about those too,” she said defensively.

Stahl attempted to get a word in, but Greene wouldn’t let her. “I think where you’re going down is the same attacks that people have attacked me with over and over and over. People constantly focus on it, but never focus on anything good about me.”

You can watch the clip for a snippet of the interview.

When the news broke Friday night that “60 Minutes” would be featuring a lengthy interview with the QAnon subscriber, those on social media reacted in a very big way – and most were furious.

“How low you’ve sunk here,” one person tweeted. Another said, “Why are you normalizing & sanitizing hardcore racism & antisemitism for US?”

The full “60 Minutes” interview aired April 2 on the CBS Television Network.

Seymour Stein, the record industry executive who helped shape the sound of 20th century pop music by signing the Ramones, Talking Heads, the Pretenders and Madonna to his Sire label, died on Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 80.

The cause of death was cancer, said his daughter, Mandy Stein.

Stein belonged to a rarefied group of music executives who gained fame on their own accord. His notoriety was so great and lasting that the Scottish indie-pop outfit Belle and Sebastian wrote a song chronicling his attempt to sign them to Sire in 1996, more than 20 years after the label’s golden era began with the release of the first album by punk originators the Ramones in 1975.

Sire released some of the most adventurous music from punk and new wave. Stein brought Talking Heads, a cerebral CBGBs cohort of the Ramones, to Sire in 1976, then expanded the label’s roster with Chrissie Hynde’s swaggering Pretenders and the noir-ish vistas of U.K. post-punk outfit Echo & the Bunnymen.

(Julie Jacobson / Associated Press)

All other Sire signings were overshadowed by Madonna, a New York-based singer whose stylish dance pop refashioned the sound and appearance of pop in the 1980s. Stein famously signed Madonna while laid up in a hospital bed, and she stuck with the label as she became the biggest pop star in the world.

Stein’s influence extended outside of Sire. While acting as president of the label — he stayed in that position until his retirement in 2018 — he helped co-found the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1983. He was inducted into the institution in 2005.

But before Stein was a mover and shaker, his passion for music helped change the contours of the industry. As an intern at Billboard magazine in 1958, he was part of the team that developed the Hot 100, the chart that became the industry standard. In his 2018 memoir “Siren Song: My Life in Music,” Stein wrote: “My business was turning great music into hit records.”

This story will be updated.

An Emmy award-winning writer who worked on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has joined the writing team for Deadpool 3.

The Ryan Reynolds-starring and produced Deadpool 3 has already had one writer shake-up on the road to release, having originally recruited Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin to pen the script.

The pair would have replaced the writers of the first two movies, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who were eventually reinstated in place of the Bob’s Burgers writers.

Deadpool 3 Recruits She-Hulk Writer

According to Deadline, writer Zeb Wells has been recruited by Ryan Reynolds and Marvel Studios to join franchise mainstays Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese on the script for Deadpool 3.

Wells has already written for the MCU before as a co-writer on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, working only on Episode 7, “The Retreat. He will also now be involved with 2023’s The Marvels and serve as head writer on Marvel Zombies.

The writer holds an Emmy for his work on Robot Chicken and has plenty of history with Marvel as a comic writer for characters such as Spider-Man and the X-Men.

Marvel Studios is Loving Zeb Wells Right Now

Between She-Hulk and Deadpool 3, Zeb Wells will now have worked on two of the MCU’s fourth-wall-breaking projects. Wells’ episode, “The Retreat,” is one of the highest rates episodes of the season and received a fairly positive response from fans at the time as it marked an uptick in quality after a few shaky episodes.

Regardless of one’s own thoughts on the gamma-infused legal comedy, Wells has clearly proven himself to be a talented writer, after all, his work on Robot Chicken has earned him seven Emmy nominations, even including one win. He undeniably has the shrewd comedy skills that Ryan Reynolds looks for to make a meaningful contribution to Deadpool 3.

Marvel Studios is clearly fond of Wells and enjoyed working so far as it is no small thing to see him put on The Marvels and Deadpool 3 writing teams having already been given an episode of She-Hulk and his own show with Marvel Zombies.

It will not be at all surprising if the Robot Chicken writer makes his way onto more MCU movies and series in the not-too-distant future.

Deadpool 3 hits theaters on November 8, 2024.

While its next-generation rocket has yet to fly, that’s not stopping SpaceX from booking Starship flights. On Friday, a startup named Astrolab that it had recently signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s private space firm to reserve a spot on an uncrewed Starship cargo mission that could launch as early as mid-2026. “This is SpaceX’s first commercial cargo contract to the lunar surface,” Jaret Matthews, CEO of Astrolab, , adding his company was one of a few customers involved in the flight.

Astrolab is building a vehicle it hopes will one day carry equipment, supplies and people across the lunar surface. The Flexible Logistics and Exploration (FLEX) rover is about the size of a Jeep Wrangler, making it a bit bigger than NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars. It also features a robotic arm for assisting with cargo and can travel up to 15 miles per hour. Oh, and FLEX can carry up to two astronauts.

Once it lands on the Moon, Astrolab claims FLEX will become the largest rover to travel the lunar surface. Matthews told The Times Astrolab already has customers waiting to use the rover to carry cargo during the 2026 Starship mission. Looking further to the future, Matthews said FLEX could assist with building a permanent human presence on the Moon and beyond. “Ultimately our goal is to have a fleet of rovers both on the Moon and Mars,” he said. “And I really think I see these vehicles as the catalysts ultimately for the off-Earth economy.”

Like all festival attendees we were

The most terrible thing about the terrible things Logan Roy says about his children–and he has said an enormous number of terrible things both about, and to, his kids over these last four seasons of TV–is that they’re so frequently, terribly, true. Logan may be, as Shiv accuses him during the Roy family reunion that serves as the ugly heart of tonight’s Succession, a “human gaslight.” But when he tells his kids, “I love you, but you’re not serious people”? Well, it’s hard to call bullshit on that.

That statement may, in fact, be the one really true thing Logan says during this entire hour of TV, which spends so much of its run-time watching him baldly speak reality into existence simply to suit his whims. (Interesting that I called that out as a go-to Shiv move last week, as she not-inaccurately accuses the old man of mastery of the form tonight.) The Logan Roy magic trick can be a loud one, as when he steps up onto a couple of boxes of printer paper on the ATN hanger floor and turns a bunch of snickering eye-rollers into battle-crazed minions, ready to die for their king. And it can be near-silent, as he maneuvers his “assistant” Kerry into, and then right back out of, an anchor job at the network, with little more than a few non-committal murmurs and pointed looks in Tom’s flop-sweating direction.

But it’s never more impressive than when it’s aimed at his kids, who know every trick in the Logan Roy playbook, but who still feel the tugs on the strings that he’s spent their whole lives jamming into their backs. Each kid dances to Logan’s tactically deployed “truths” in a different way: Connor demurs. Kendall hits back. Shiv marshals her counter-evidence. And Roman? Poor Roman, the true believer, the last acolyte of the utterly fucked idea that there is something meaningful called “the Roy family” left to save? Rome listens.

But, whoops, we’re perilously close to jumping to the end of the story here. Let’s rewind, back to the start of “Rehearsal.” We’re now just a day out from the sale of Waystar Royco to GoJo, and everyone involved is a different kind of antsy. For Logan, that means stalking around the floor at ATN–which is about to enjoy the “benefits” of being the sole object of its owner’s obsessions–like “if Santa Claus was a hitman,” in the words of an extra-preppy. extra funny tonight Greg. For the kids, it means spitballing plans for their Pierce acquisition. (They’re awful, by the way; Succession remains beautifully committed to never suggesting that any of the Roy kids are secret geniuses being unfairly held back from greatness.) For everybody, it involves blowing off steam watching Kerry’s horrifying ATN audition tape, as Zoe Winters makes a strong case for herself as an early frontrunner for the season’s comedy MVP. (The hands! Can’t unsee the hands.) And for Sandi and Stewie, it means trying to talk The Kids into tossing one last “Fuck you” at their old man, in the form of trying to force him to renegotiate the Waystar sales price a little higher with “the Swede.”

It’s that last gambit that puts the first serious nail in the coffin of The Kids Alliance–not because Roman is so concerned that Lukas Mattson will walk from the deal if he gets some pushback, but because it reveals what everyone’s real motivations here actually are. For Shiv and Kendall–especially Kendall–the billions of dollars in the balance are seemingly incidental to the joys of sticking a finger in their dad’s eye, of wresting a little bit of control back from the bullies eternally hanging over their lives. For Logan, it’s about control, too–other people have it, he wants it, so it’s time to deploy that expletive-ready silver tongue. But for Roman, the idea that Logan (via Kerry) floats in that gaudy karaoke room–and where better to roll out a performance operating at constantly fluctuating levels of fakeness?–is obviously seductive. What if their family, and the multi-billion dollar business that’s consumed it for his entire life, weren’t actually synonymous anymore? What if there was an actual clean break that could possibly repair the divide?

Succession

Succession

It’s a human impulse–but also a deluded one, because Rome can’t perceive that Shiv and Kendall will never trust their father again. Their maneuverings are no longer about carving out a space where Logan is forced to respect them as equals; they’re just about hitting him where it hurts. (Which is, ironically, a position Logan might actually respect.) Shiv’s hurts are fresher, exacerbated this week by Logan loaning Tom one of his classic divorce moves, adding extra “divorcing my dad” subtext to an already fraught situation. And Kendall?

Well, Kendall’s the tricky one, isn’t he? For the first half of “Rehearsal,” Kendall seems completely on board with the original plan, letting the sale go through, moving on to creating his god-awful cable news shows on Pierce. But then he takes a call from Mattson–Alexander Skarsgård’s welcome first appearance in the season–and something shifts. It’s a hard moment to read: Does Kendall sense weakness in Mattson’s attempt to steamroll the nascent rebellion? Does the Swedish bullying kick him into oppositional defiance? Or does he simply realize that the sudden ability to tank the sale gives him the chance to do what he really wants to do: Fuck his dad, well and truly, and in a way that will actually stick? The fact that Kendall doesn’t tell his siblings about Mattson’s call underlines the fact that there’s something ugly bubbling up to motivate the turn here; in trying to analyze it, I keep coming back to that “I need something super-fucking absorbing in my life” comment he made last week. We haven’t seen that smile on Jeremy Strong’s face—the one he flashes on the car ride home tonight, the one that will never, ever reach his eyes—in a minute. It never bodes especially well.

And, damn it, we’ve found ourselves back at those final scenes again, haven’t we? Swept up in the seismic pull of five Roys in a room together, carving flesh off each other as efficiently as they can. But that unfairly skips over huge swathes of tonight’s episode, which is also one of the funniest in recent memory, as Tom and Greg attempt to navigate the horrorshow of Logan’s personal attention resting on ATN, and the Roy kids take Connor out for a night in “real America,” after Willa freaks out over the whole “marrying a man she doesn’t love” thing at their unseen trainwreck of a wedding rehearsal. That’s to say nothing of the smaller comedy setups that dot the episode: Hugo and Gerri getting caught mocking Kerry’s tape; watching the shit roll downhill to Greg as he’s forced to be the one to break the news to Logan’s right-hand lady that she won’t be becoming a national TV star. This is vintage Succession-as-comedy…it’s just lurking in the margins surrounding some absolutely killer Succession-as-drama.

Succession

Succession

Because it all comes back to Roman, really. You can even watch the moment when it all breaks down, written plain as day on Kieran Culkin’s face. It’s in the bar, before Logan even shows up to work his magic: Kendall and Shiv are taking turns tearing Rome down, attacking his instincts on the Mattson deal. And then the “Fuck this” just blooms on him, his face hardening into something wounded and angry, just like it did all those times their dad did this exact same shit to him. That’s when they lose him, and they don’t even notice; the rest is really just a formality.

Pretty fuckin’ good formality, though: Succession plays very sparingly with getting as much of its cast in the room together as it does here, and the result is typically impressive. Lit in gaudy purple karaoke parlor light, we have Brian Cox playing Logan playing humble, eyes wide and “vulnerable”—after he spent the opening span of the episode hiding them with sunglasses—offering apologies to his kids as though they were line items in a contract. (And is there a more Logan move than creating a slight—in this case, canceling the kids’ use of a company helicopter on their way to Connor’s rehearsal—just so that he has an easy item to apologize for later?) Roman, anxious for reconciliation; Shiv, open and raw; Kendall, perched above it all, just trying to extract some pain. It all builds, after every failed probe, to that “serious people” comment; Logan unable to see his own part in creating kids who can only feel anything about a multi-billion dollar business deal in terms of what it means about their relationship with daddy. Rome’s the only one still formally vying for that fabled kiss, and so he’s the one who ultimately breaks: Slipping off to Logan’s place afterwards to entertain offers of betrayal that come in the seductive language of need.

Let’s actually finish with Connor, though—poor, despicable Connor—as Alan Ruck gives one of his best performances of his entire lovely, ever out-of-focus tenure on this show. Partly because his last monologue tonight is just perfectly awful, and partly because it nails his, and his sibling’s, pathologies, pretty much to the bone. “The good thing about having a family who doesn’t love you,” he starts, honesty and self-pity mingling in his voice, “is that you learn to live without it. You’re all chasing after Dad, saying, ‘Love me, please love me, I need love, I need attention.’” Shiv, lying to everybody, including herself, tries to deny, tries to claim that what she and Kendall are doing is somehow the opposite of that, but Connor just rolls: “You’re needy love sponges. And I’m a plant that grows on rocks, and lives off insects that die inside of me. If Willa doesn’t come back, that’s fine. Because I don’t need love; it’s like a superpower. And if she comes back, and doesn’t love me, that’s okay, too. Because I don’t need it.”

“Thanks for the party.”

Stray observations

  • The murder face Sarah Snook ends the cold open on, once Shiv realizes that Tom’s screwed her over on the divorce attorneys, is really a thing of wonder. Snook never stops using that rage for one second of the rest of the episode.
  • Greg, describing Logan’s stalking of the ATN news floor, in some of the funniest writing/deliveries of the episode: “I don’t know, he’s…moseying. Terrifyingly moseying…It’s like Jaws, if everyone in Jaws worked for Jaws.”
  • I, for one, was not familiar with the Stakhanovites, Soviet socialist workers with a focus on hard work and efficiency. Thanks, Succession: You make learning fun!
  • Jess Watch: Would Jess watch Kendall’s awful international news programming ideas? “Uh, if it was on…totally.”
  • The Kerry audition tape is the comedic gift that keeps on giving. Kendall: “She is doing…the shit…out of this news.”
  • We’ve seen god knows how many different shades of Manipulative Logan over the years, but his speech to the ATN workers is a flavor we rarely get. You can see it hit the workers, but it’s hardly necessary: As Cox ramps up into it, it’s hard not to get swept up in the spirit. “You’re fucking pirates!”
  • Everything about Connor and Willa’s rehearsal is weird, of course, but for some reason, the strangest detail for me is Willa’s mom being there.
  • “We can drink, right? A little bachelor party for…POTUS scrotus?”
  • Connor’s request for a bachelor party venue: “A real bar, with chicks. And guys who work with their hands, and grease, and sweat from their hands, and have blood in their hair.” Roman: “I don’t like these guys. They sound like a medical experiment gone wrong.”
  • All of the Roy kids’ drink orders at the bar are deliberately obnoxious, but Shiv’s “The house red, do I dare?” actually manages to out-pretentious Connor’s Belgian weissbier.
  • I love that Roman “being nice” to Connor just means saying the same horrible things, but in a slightly nicer tone. “I’m not saying your cum, I’m sure your cum is very washable…”
  • The other big reveal tonight: Roman’s been texting with Logan ever since the birthday party. “It’s dick pics, anyway, he’s got a real taste for them now.”
  • On second watch, it becomes clearer than Roman was probably angling for some kind of reconciliation with Logan all night; it’s why he leaks the details of the kids’ wobbling to Connor, and there are moments when he’s clearly prompting Logan to give the apologies Rome thinks might heal the rifts with Ken and Shiv. He really does want to fix it, poor kid.
  • “Stop ganging up on me like you’re Lennon and McCartney, and I’m fuckin’ George. I’m John, motherfuckers. *points to Shiv and Kendall* Ringo. Yoko… He’s still Connor, but he won having drinks with us at an auction.”
  • It’s always fascinating to see the expressions Logan makes when his kids actually score some leverage on him. “They’ve got some juice.”
  • Connor, getting his karaoke dreams: “You think they have ‘Desperado’ by The Eagles?” (He ends up doing Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Raincoat” instead, dialing deep into his infidelity fears.)
  • Shiv and Kendall, to Kerry about her ATN gig: “Has he fucked you on that?”
“That’ll happen, the fucking. But congratulations on losing your betrayal cherry.”
  • This is, I think, the first time we get someone outright saying Logan hit Roman when he was kid, after years of implications. Roman’s heartbreaking response: “Oh, no, I mean…everyone hit me. I was fucking annoying.”
  • Next week: The wedding of Connor Roy and Willa Ferreyra. Because what’s ever gone wrong at a Roy family wedding, right?

The most terrible thing about the terrible

The bond between siblings has been a longtime fascination for film and television shows, leading to some of the most famous brother and sister duos in film and television history. Those who think romance is the pinnacle of an interesting relationship will be surprised to know that some of the most memorable character bonds are between siblings. Popular shows like Supernatural have a brother duo as their main characters, and one of Disney’s biggest hits, Frozen, is all about the love between sisters rather than a princess and prince finding each other.

Besides brother and brother and sister with sister duos, though, there are also very memorable brother and sister characters. The relationships between a brother and sister are always very different from what same-gender sibling relationships provide, and that can lead to some unique storylines within television or movies. Whether it’s being as protective as possible or having characters who wind each other up, there is something very funny and relatable about the most famous brother and sister or sibling duos, and it’s led to tons of great team-ups from movie and TV history.

15 Luke And Leia From Star Wars

Luke and Leia from the Star Wars franchise are both intergalactic rebels that the world of movies and pop culture will never forget. One of the most famous brother and sister duos in the history of film, they are also known for having a romantic relationship before finding out they were related. Not only are they brother and sister, but they are twins. Twins have always been a huge subject of fascination, making Leia and Luke all the more iconic. As one of the best sets of movie twins, Luke and Leia’s team-up is something for the history book as they both were integral to the success of the rebellion.

14 Mabel And Dipper From Gravity Falls

Mabel and Dipper look on in terror in Gravity Falls

Another famous brother and sister duo are twins Dipper and Mabel, who won the hearts of many fans when Gravity Falls was released in 2012. The two of them are living with their great uncle Stan over the summer, and see a lot of what makes the show special through the family interactions. Dipper is the more serious and ambitious one who is trying to unlock the secrets of the town while Mabel is incredibly outgoing, silly, and fun. Sibling relationships are a big part of the show, so their connection and trust in each other are often explored.

13 Ron And Ginny Weasley From Harry Potter

Harry, Ron, and Ginny sharing a plate of pumpkin pasties at Christmas

The Harry Potter franchise plays host to quite a few excellent siblings, two of which are from the Weasley family. However, there is something special about the relationship between the famous brother and sister duo Ron and Ginny. Some of the most likable of the Weasley siblings, they go through a lot together, with many of those moments being quite difficult, yet they always come out on the other side even stronger.

They’re a classic brother and sister duo in the fact that they are able to wind each other up, but then also be very caring. It’s the type of relationship where they can mock each other, but nobody else can hurt them, or else they will become defensive, which is great to see.

12 Max And Dani From Hocus Pocus

Max And Dani Dennison Hocus Pocus

Max and Dani are a famous brother and sister team with a wider age gap than a lot of the others, but that is part of what makes them so interesting in their dynamic. Max is a teenager who wants to do teen activities, and that causes friction with his little sister, Dani, who wants him to take her trick or treating. However, their sibling bond is put to the test by three witches, but it’s more than strong enough to survive. Had Dani and Max not fought over Halloween activities, the Sanderson sisters never would’ve been brought back, and Hocus Pocus wouldn’t have happened.

11 Klaus And Violet From A Series of Unfortunate Events

Violet and Klaus A Series of Unfortunate Events

A Series of Unfortunate Events is a movie, show, and book series about the strength of a family overcoming hardships together. However, the parents are dead, and the three siblings have to depend on each other. The older ones are Klaus and Violet, and this famous brother and sister relationship is the most prominent in the series. They are always together and have a very healthy sibling relationship built on trust and teamwork. Having each other is probably the least unfortunate thing in their lives. They also both have to act as parents to their youngest sibling, Sunny.

10 Phineas And Candace Flynn From Phineas & Ferb

Candace is stuck in a virtual world as Phineas, Ferb and friends look on.

This is one of the most fun siblings in television history, with the famous brother and sister duo Phineas and Candace constantly winding each other up and frustrating the other to the point of annoyance. Candace is desperate to catch out her brother and his inventions, telling him off to their parents, and seeing her fail each time, leading to some of the best Phineas and Ferb episodes, is always hilarious. However, even though they do annoy each other and push each other’s buttons, they can be kind and caring towards each other when they need to be, just like any great set of siblings.

9 Dwayne And Olive From Little Miss Sunshine

The family sitting at a diner in Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss Sunshine is a very heartfelt film about family and being yourself. The youngest, Olive, wants to win a Little Miss Sunshine child pageantry contest, and the family band together to get her there, so she can have her dream come true. However, it is slowly revealed that while everyone in the family is ambitious and has dreams, none of them get what they want because society is just one big beauty contest that they are all losers in.

The brother, Dwayne, hates his family and does not even say a word for the first half of the film until he has a breakdown when he realizes he is colorblind and can never go to the Air Force Academy. The only person who could console him is Olive, his sister. Later on, he defends Olive and even dances silly with her when people at the beauty contest start to boo her. They are certainly an example of one of the sweetest famous brother and sister relationships in movies.

8 Jon Snow & Arya Stark From Game Of Thrones

Jon and Arya hugging on Game of Thrones

There’s a lot of famous brother and sister relationships within Game of Thrones, with one, in particular, standing out for being a little too close. However, the bond between Jon Snow and Arya Stark really is the most fun to watch throughout, and the two have some of the best sibling quotes on Game of Thrones.

They might spend most of the show split apart, but anytime they hear about the other, their faces light up, plus, the moment they finally meet again is one of the very best in the series. Their reactions showcase the shock of each other still being alive, and the sheer love that they have, even if they’re not proper siblings. Many families are split and different nowadays, and that’s what makes this relationship a special one.

7 Shuri And T’Challa From Black Panther

T'Challah and Shuri standing together in Black Panther

Shuri and T’Challa from Black Panther are great characters for a lot of individual reasons. Shuri is a relatable teenager before coming into her own as the new Black Panther, incredibly smart, can fight, helps those in need, and defies a lot of stereotypes. T’Challa was modest, fought for what he loved, was merciful, and had an open mind. Together, the famous brother and sister duo were an amazing team thanks to the chemistry between Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright. Together they joked, they laughed, and they were just the kind of relatable characters that many real-life siblings identified with.

6 Nick And Margo Dunne From Gone Girl

Nick and Margot talking to each other at the bar in Gone Girl

The famous brother and sister bond in Gone Girl is one of the strongest that has ever been shown in film and television. The bond that Nick and Margo have is incredibly close, and the love and trust they have for each other is obvious, with Margo being one of the few people that actually believes her brother. She’s committed to helping clear his name as much as humanly possible, and she goes to great lengths to do so. The seriousness of the film doesn’t really get to showcase the funnier side that their relationship might have, but the love between them is clear.

5 Bart and Lisa Simpson From The Simpsons

Sideshow Bob holds up Lisa and Bart in The Simpsons

The Simpsons and all of its seasons are known as one of the best shows of the 20th century, so of course, the main kid characters, Bart and Lisa, are one of the most famous brother and sister duos in the world of television. They are not exactly opposites in terms of personality, but they are pretty different and butt heads a lot in the show.

Bart is a mischievous rebel with sharp wit and often disrespects authority while Lisa is incredibly intelligent and politically aware and liberal. The two often fight like a brother and sister are expected to, but always end up accepting each other in the end. Also, “Bart” was Lisa’s first word, which shows the strong bond they really have.

4 Wednesday and Pugsley Addams From The Addams Family

Jenna Ortega; Luis Guzman; Catherine Zeta Jones; Isaac Ordonez as Addams Family

While the famous brother and sister duo Wednesday and Pugsley are often depicted as having a strong sibling rivalry, they share a lot of interests. Like most of the family, they like the macabre and share a love of dangerous objects. In addition, Wednesday has proven that she more than cares for her brother’s well-being after sending a school of piranhas after the swim team jock who was caught bullying him in Wednesday.

The Addams family is like no other, so they really only have each other to play with when it comes to these unusual interests. It goes to show that even if society does not accept you, a great family with a similar sibling can make all the difference. Thanks to Wednesday, the Addams family’s daughter has proven she can stand on her own as a strong female character, but her relationship with Pugsley is nonetheless important.

3 Ross And Monica Geller From Friends

Friends Ross and Monica perform the routine

Friends is one of the most iconic television shows of all time, and the closeness of the lead characters is a big reason for that. The famous brother and sister duo have a very tight bond, sharing all their free time together, and one of the most special relationships within that group is with Ross and Monica.

The brother and sister are most like best friends at points, and it is very heart-warming to see some of the best episodes about the Ross and Monica dynamic. They share the ups and downs together and are always on hand to pick each other up, all while having the classic back-and-forth arguments that are expected from siblings.

2 Katara And Sokka From Avatar The Last Airbender

Avatar The Last Airbender's Katara and Sokka discovering Aang in ice

Avatar: The Last Airbender has been known as one of the greatest cartoons on American television, if not just plain one of the best shows. It explores a ton, from eastern philosophy to overcoming your past and the expectations of others. Katara and Sokka are the famous brother and sister team that adventure together with Aang, the last airbender. They are both pretty different, with Sokka being cynical and often more of the comedic character and Katara being a waterbender with a lot of faith in their cause. Despite those differences, they stick together and support each other through a lot of hardship.

1 Deedee And Dexter From Dexter’s Laboratory

Dee Dee winking at Dexter in Dexter's Laboratory

Out of all the famous brother and sister teams, it is Deedee and Dexter from one of the most nostalgic ’90s Cartoon Network shows who are the most different from each other. One is a goofy, mischievous, and obnoxious teenager, while the other is a genius who just wants to get work done. They are also the most comedic due to how different they are, often with Dexter having to chase his sister out of his laboratory so that she does not destroy everything. Those with siblings can definitely understand the struggle of just wanting a bit of privacy sometimes.
