Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano

Disney+

Reprising her role as the title character is Rosario Dawson. Dawson has starred in a variety of films including Kids, Men in Black II and Clerks III. Making her first live-action appearance as Ahsoka in The Mandalorian, Dawson was met with immediate praise for her portrayal of the iconic Jedi, who first appeared in the animated series The Clone Wars.

Fans were also excited to see Dawson dawning even more advanced technology for Ahsoka’s tendrils. Her first version in The Mandalorian was a little short and awkward, so it is nice to see her costuming given more care in the show.

Ariana Greenblatt as Young Ahsoka

In addition to Dawson, a younger Ahsoka was briefly portrayed by Ariana Greenblatt. This wasn’t Greenblatt’s first time playing the younger version of a character for Disney, as she also played young Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War.

It was an exciting moment for fans of the show to see moments from the Clone Wars series brought to life in live-action.

Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren

Sabine Wren in Ahsoka
Disney+

Similar to Ahsoka, Sabine, a Mandalorian warrior and Imperial Academy dropout, was first introduced in Rebels. The actress chosen to play Sabine in Ahsoka is Natasha Liu Bordizzo, who made her debut in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny in 2016 for which she went through extensive training, earning a black belt in taekwondo.

This training has come in handy for her portrayal of the Mandalorian Sabine, who knows her way around a fight. Not only does Sabine fight in hand-to-hand combat, but in the show, she wields Ezra’s lightsaber. Bordizzo can also be seen in The Greatest Showman, Hotel Mumbai and Day Shift.

David Tennant as Huyang

Disney Platform Distribution

Huyang made his first appearance in the animated Clone Wars series. The droid traveled with Jedi younglings, helping them to build their very first lightsabers. One group of younglings in particular was being escorted by Ahsoka and Huyang during this ceremonious time when they were attacked by pirates.

Huyang proved himself to be much more than just a stuffy droid filled with knowledge about the Jedi. David Tennant, known for roles like Doctor Who, was the original voice actor for the character and has returned to lend his voice to the droid once again.

Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker

Much like in Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of the most anticipated characters that appears in Ahsoka is Ahsoka’s former Master, Anakin Skywalker AKA Darth Vader. Reprising his role as in the prequels and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hayden Christensen was happy to come out of his quiet farming life to return to Star Wars with vengeance.

While much is known about Anakin before and after his fall to the dark side, very little is seen in the transition period after he first falls. Ahsoka gave some more insight into this, but also revealed where his spirit went after saying goodbye to his son at the end of the original trilogy.

Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger

ahsoka-series-ezra
Lucasfilm

Ezra Bridger was first introduced in Rebels as a former con artist who was taken in by Kanan Jarrus to be trained in the ways of the Jedi. Ezra disappeared with Thrawn by the end of the animated series, and Ahsoka is determined to find him, which many initially believed to be part of Ahsoka’s story when she appeared in The Mandalorian. This has turned out to be part of the story, but the person who is more desperate than anyone to find him is his good friend, Sabine.

The live-action Ezra is portrayed by actor and musician Eman Esfandi, whose limited filmography, including Red 11, I Am Mackenzie, and The Inspection, is bound to blow up after the release of the new series. With how much of Ezra’s signature charm he was able to put in for the minute or so he was first seen, it seems well deserved.

Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati

Lucasfilm

Shin Hati is the apprentice of Baylan Skoll, who wields a lightsaber and is a user of the dark side of the Force. Shin Hati is one of the antagonists, as she is ordered by her master to go after Ahsoka and Sabine.

She is also one of the few new characters never seen before and is portrayed by Ivanna Sakhno, a Ukrainian-American actress who is known for Pacific Rim Uprising and The Spy Who Dumped Me.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla

Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in Lucasfilm's AHSOKA, exclusively on Disney+.
Lucasfilm

Hera Syndulla was first introduced to viewers through Rebels and Star Wars Forces of Destiny. She is a Twi’lek general of the New Republic, is the pilot of the ship, Ghost, and is also the mother of Jacen, who was fathered by Kanan Jarrus.

Horror actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, known for Wolf Lake, Smashed and 10 Cloverfield Lane, was cast as Hera. As one of the more well-known and acclaimed actors on the cast list, Winstead has now been added to the Star Wars universe as one of the most beloved characters from Rebels.

Evan Whitten as Jacen Syndulla

Jacen Syndulla in the Star Wars series Ahsoka
Disney+

One character no one expected to see in the live-action show is Jacen Syndulla. As previously mentioned, he is the child of Hera and Kanan. The kid was introduced at the very end of Rebels, but not much was known about him.

In Ahsoka, he is not only a friend to Chopper, Hera’s trusted droid who also made the transition to live-action, but he was revealed to be Force-sensitive like his dad. The potential Jedi is played by Evan Whitten. Although the actor is young, he already has quite the filmography, including projects like Big Sky and Mr. Robot.

Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll

Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll in the Star Wars series Ahsoka on Disney+
Disney / Lucasfilm Ltd.

Baylan Skoll is another new addition to the Star Wars universe. A former Jedi, Baylan survived Order 66 by fleeing to unknown regions of the galaxy. Serving as a Master to Shin Hati and an ally to Grand Admiral Thrawn, he is a key player in the show.

The Sith was portrayed by Ray Stevenson, a Northern Irish actor known for playing Dragonet in King Arthur and Titus Pullo in the TV series Rome. While the character of Baylan is new to the Star Wars cinematic universe, Stevenson is not, having voiced Gar Saxon in Rebels and The Clone Wars. Unfortunately, Stevenson passed away shortly before the release of the series.

Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma

Genevieve O’Reilly is well-known for her portrayal of Mon Mothma in Revenge of the Sith, Rogue One, and Andor. She also starred in The Young Victoria and Forget Me Not, and iconically voiced Moira in Overwatch.

She has returned to her role in Ahsoka, as the Chancellor of the New Republic. It’s entirely possible that her actions will line up with what has been revealed about the character and her actions in Andor. Needless to say, Mon Mothma is an important part of the transition period between the Old Republic, the Imperial takeover, and the Rebellion.

Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth

ahsoka-series-elsbeth
Disney / Lucasfilm Ltd.

First making her appearance in The Mandalorian, Morgan Elsbeth was first seen as a horrific Imperial Magistrate and servant of Thrawn. Reprising her role as Morgan is Diana Lee Inosanto, a stuntwoman and martial artist who wrote and directed the film The Sensei.

Inosanto has acted as a stuntwoman since 1996, even starring in films like Blade, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and Team Knight Rider. While she hasn’t displayed her fighting talents much in Ahsoka, as her character relies more on her skills as a witch, she has given her character a chilling presence that elevates the show.

Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn

Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Ahsoka Star Wars Disney+ series

Grand Admiral Thrawn is a senior officer of the Galactic Empire known for his tactical attacks. He was taken into hyperspace by Ezra and Purrgil in the finale of Rebels. Reprising his role as the Chiss high-ranking Grand Admiral Thrawn is the actor who originally voiced him, Lars Mikkelsen.

The actor has a passion for the character, as Thrawn does not rely on The Force and instead uses his own cunning to strike back, always ahead of the game. On top of playing the iconic role of the Grand Admiral, Mikkelson is known for The Killing, Sherlock, and House of Cards.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Captain Carson Teva

Lucasfilm

While he may not have a very big role in the show, Captain Carson Teva has been making his presence known in the Star Wars universe. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee has played the New Republic pilot several times through the various Star Wars shows on Disney+.

He was seen talking with fellow rebel Zeb, who made his debut in Rebels. In Ahsoka, Captain Teva flies alongside Hera Syndulla and seems to be a trusted part of her squad. Teva continues to serve as the connective tissue between the live-action Star Wars series.

Paul Darnell as Marrok

The Inquisitor Marrok in the Star Wars series Ahsoka
Disney+

Paul Darnell is a stunt actor who has worked on films like Baby Driver, Twilight, and Spiderman: Far from Home. He has done work on several Star Wars projects, but his most prominent role has been Marrok in Ahsoka.

Marrok didn’t really do much before being defeated by Ahsoka, but the Inquisitor put up one heck of a fight. It’s no wonder they hired such a skilled stuntman to play the role.

Summary Rosario Dawson reprises her role

This post was written by Michael Cooke.

How do you build a huge world on an indie scale? It’s a question I get asked a lot. My short film/pilot presentation, FREEMAN HOSPITALITY, is about a family of African-American gunslingers in a post-apocalyptic dystopian America.

I began working on this script in 2018. From the beginning, the idea was to leave the viewer with the idea that this is a world worth exploring further. The simple truth is that I didn’t realize the scale of it until I stopped and looked back at the project’s journey.

The Resources

‘Freeman Hospitality’

The Freemans live in Georgia in 2055 amid the chaos of a failed state. America is crumbling, vast swathes of the South have turned into full-on warzones. In these warzones pop up warlords.

What if an ambitious foreign journalist wanted to land the interview of a lifetime? That journalist would need to hire the best protection in the land–the Freemans.

Before any mission, you need to plan it. Where could the Freemans plan their mission? At the center, the heartbeat of most family homes, the kitchen. Except on their table isn’t a big Sunday meal, it’s military-grade weapons and holographic maps for survival.

My grandparents have a large ranch-style home on five acres of land. They built it themselves in the small town of Albany, Georgia. Exactly ten minutes away, my uncle has an open field of about 20 acres of land. Those two locations were my settings.

I had meaningful and accessible locations, a story with conflict built around those places, and a universal location to subvert audience expectations. Now how to actually film the project so that it looked like a film I’d want to see.

Film Resources

‘Freeman Hospitality’

I’m fortunate enough to own my own camera package, a RED Epic Dragon 6K, so that’s what we shot on. Not having to pay for a camera package was a huge chunk out of our budget. This meant that I didn’t have to worry about getting rentals, or extra transport.

We used 100 percent practical lights and natural light which allowed us to move quickly through the Freeman’s house and create a stoic mood for the family.

For our exteriors, we shot in late winter and the southern gods were kind to us. Our exteriors were shot on two consecutive cloudy days, using just some bounce and negative fill.

VFX

‘Freeman Hospitality’

A large part of the budget was devoted to making sure that I could translate visual history and danger using VFX, firearm training, and good old-fashioned dialogue. Whether it was solar panels on the old family home or war-torn cotton fields on fire, I wanted to accentuate the Freeman’s world.

All of the bullet effects were done in post. As an extra level of safety and on-screen technical proficiency, I hired a tactical trainer and technical advisor Matt Clanton to the team. He taught our actors how to move with firearms, and helped plan our fire and exit scene.

Back to the Core

Black people are not monoliths, but large parts of the Black experience are shared, and so I wanted to speak to that in the context of growing up Black in South Georgia but with a science fiction edge.

Freeman Hospitality is meant to be a jumping-off point to this vision.

Fox News host Jesse Watters seemed thrilled this week to call attention to the alleged acceptance of bribes by Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez. Watters repeatedly tried to connect the senator’s behavior with that of Hunter Biden while also insinuating illegal activity by President Joe Biden. Menendez, also chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been charged with accepting bribes for exerting his influence to help businesspeople and the government of Egypt.

Watters took his first sideswipe at Biden and son Hunter by saying, “But instead of sending the bribes through a maze of shell companies like the Bidens, Menendez got gold bars delivered to his house.”

There has yet to be evidence presented that President Biden accepted bribes or broke any laws, but son Hunter has faced charges for tax crimes. Watters questioned why the Biden administration is choosing to pursue Menendez now.

Mendendez and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, according to prosecutors. The charges include bribery, fraud and extortion. The FBI found approximately $500,000 in cash at Menendez’s home, as well as a large quantity of gold and a Mercedes-Benz.

“So, you can see the Bidens now snickering at ‘Gold Bar Bob’ — ‘Can you believe this guy?’” Watters said.

He continued, noting, “The FBI found $500,000, in cash, stuffed in official Sen. Menendez windbreakers, hanging in his closet. ‘What’s that doing there?’ Was it too lumpy under your mattress?”

But this was all found in a raid on Menendez’s home that took place last year, so Watters wanted to know why it was only coming to light now.

“Menendez has been walking around Washington knowing Biden’s agents have a stack of his gold bars, ready to drop at any minute. God, Biden must have been squeezing Bob,” Watters said. “And then they drop these gold bars on Menendez a week before the Joe Biden impeachment inquiry opens into bribery. Is this so that they can say, ‘Now that’s real bribery over there’?”

A number of Democratic politicians have called for Menendez to resign.

The host continued his speculation, saying, “Joe Biden was never caught with gold bars and cash up into his windbreaker. And you know this was a partisan prosecution, because the Southern District of New York indicted Gold Bar Bob, not the U.S. attorney in New Jersey.”

Watters went on to question whether Menendez was “just a thorn in Biden’s side,” noting that Menendez was previously indicted for bribery in another case under the Barack Obama administration while Joe Biden served as vice president — but Menendez escaped a conviction thanks to a hung jury.

The Fox News host also noted Menendez has disagreements with Biden on foreign affairs, citing Menendez’s more conservative stances on those issues. Watters included a shot at Biden’s support for Israel, claiming that Menendez loves Israel while Biden’s attitude is “Eh, not so much.”

“So Menendez is cooked, and President Biden has a wider lane in foreign affairs now,” Watters claimed. “But, we’re getting to know Joe Biden, aren’t we? He sees an obstacle, and he doesn’t move around it — he removes it.”

Watters displayed a graphic of former President Donald Trump, Menendez, FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and Elon Musk.

“Trump, indicted,” Watters began. “Menendez, indicted. Mini-Madoff — took the money, indicted. Elon Musk, investigated four times — the indictment’s coming.”

Watters expanded, adding, “You’re unvaxxed, you’re fired. Biden’s cagier than we give him credit for. He did exactly what Bob Menendez did, but every time investigators got close, they were obstructed. Hunter was tipped off, and the CIA and the FBI covered for him.”

At the end of the segment, Watters concludes, “So what’s the difference between a Menendez and a Biden? Nobody effs with a Biden.”

Earlier in the segment, Watters traced the scandal back to the senator’s wife, Nadine.

“Gold Bar Bobby proposed at the Taj Mahal in India — classic Bob move,” Watters said.

In a song choice that may seem extra unfortunate at this time, Menendez proposed with a song from “The Greatest Showman.” Watters played a clip that includes the senator singing, “Towers of gold are still too little. These hands could hold the world, but it’ll never be enough.”

Continuing, Watters stated, “And it was never enough for Nadine. She wanted more, more, more.”

Watters detailed the story of how the senator’s wife apparently introduced Menendez to a group of Egyptians, including dining out together, before taking a trip to Egypt and meeting with Egyptian intelligence and military officials.

“Now, as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Gold Bar Bob held sway over arms packages and foreign aid. Gold Bar was leveraging billions in American aid in exchange for family bribes and no-show jobs,” Watters said. “Now, where have I heard that before? Just like the Bidens, their text messages, Gold Bar Bob also tried shutting down investigations into the business partners who were bribing him.”

Watters showed a text from Menendez to his wife, which read, “I am going to sign off this sale to Egypt today.”

“Menendez was trying to plant the right prosecutor in office to look the other way so that the money would keep flowing. God, it just sounds so familiar,” Watters said, again making a not-so-subtle jab at the Bidens without providing specific evidence.

“And, the whole time he was compromised by foreign agents, he was accusing other people of being foreign agents,” Watters said, followed by a clip of Menendez talking about Donald Trump potentially being a Russian intelligence asset.

“Menendez was an agent of Egypt, accusing Trump of being an agent of Russia,” Watters summarized.

Watters opened the segment all too happy to bring up the propensity of New Jersey politicians for corruption, with text along the bottom of the screen reading “NJ POLITICIANS LOVE TO BE BRIBED.” He cited Robert “The Torch” Torricelli, a New Jersey Democrat who served in the Senate from 1997 until 2003 before dropping out of a re-election campaign after a campaign finance scandal involving lavish gifts.

You can watch the full clip above, if you’d like to see Watters dive deeper into what he believes is a full-fledged conspiracy by the Bidens and continuing to equate the Menendez couple and the Bidens.

This week, former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson revealed in her book “Enough” that Rudy Guiliani groped her during the Jan. 6, 2021 attacks on the Capitol in Washington. That claim was backed up by her fellow former aide and current “The View” cohost Alyssa Farrah Griffin.

The move seems to have angered Trump adviser Peter Navarro who posted to X (formerly Twitter) multiple times, beginning with a tweet that read, “Watched Hutchinson in West Wing suck candy daily outside Meadows office doing NOTHING. Pimping new ‘book’ with White House loser Alyssa Farah.”

Navarro continued, “Hutchinson sold soul to J6 witch hunt. This her next 15 minutes of fame. Rudy Giuliani hero, Cassidy trash.”

On Friday, Navarro added to his tirade against the women. He posted, “Why would White House men – prez, vp, senior aide – EVER hire a woman after watching book pimps Cassiday[sic] Hutchinson, Alyssa Farah, Stephanie Grisham, Kayleigh McEnany, Olivia Troye throw mud at Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani et. al. Pimp ladies be giving real MAGA WOMEN bad name.”

On Friday night, Griffin returned fire via Twitter. She explained that she would typically ignore such commentary, “but let me state for the historical record: Navarro was seen as a liability, distraction, & sideshow in the West Wing.”

“To put it as politely as I can: he was ‘strategically’ left off of calendar invites,” she concluded.

Hutchinson also shares in “Enough” that Donald Trump stopped wearing N95 masks during the COVID-19 pandemic because the straps on the masks smudged the bronzer that he wore. The move had major ramifications around the country, as many people stopped wearing a mask once Trump did.

She wrote, “The press would criticize him for not wearing a mask not knowing that the depth of his vanity had caused him to reject masks – and then millions of his fans followed suit.”

“Enough” will be in bookstores on Tuesday.

When “Snowpiercer” hit theaters in 2013, it kicked off an incredible decade for Bong Joon Ho that culminated in his historic Oscar win for “Parasite.” But one of the film’s stars wasn’t convinced that the project was a sure thing.

In a new interview with GQ, Chris Evans reflected on the experience of working with Bong on the dystopian film. He revealed that he didn’t initially understand the script and had questions about the rules of the world in which it takes place.

“When I first read the script, I didn’t quite get it,” Evans said. “I was like, ‘So…what?’ Whenever it’s a movie that’s world-building, you’re creating a completely separate environment. There’s just kind of a conceit that you have to say, ‘OK, so everyone just accepts this, this is just how it is? No one is kind of outraged that this is the structure? That’s just the norm, OK.’”

Evans continued: “You kind of have to decide what part of your brain do you spend time wrapping your head around. Do you go the intimate road and just kind of make it about the character? Do you try and make it about what it took for that society to level into that place? It’s a challenge, but you get to watch Tilda Swinton in the movie and you get to watch her approach to this larger than life character.”

Evans said that he eventually decided to stop worrying about details and place his trust in Bong based on his reputation and the clarity of his vision.

“Director Bong is such a visionary. When you’re working with someone that knows exactly what they want, even if it’s not exactly the way you saw it, it breeds trust,” he said. “And as an actor, that’s the most important thing, to trust the director. Otherwise you’re playing defense. Otherwise you’re like, ‘Alright, this first take, well, I’ll just do this, just so I can at least protect that. Then I’ll try this, but I don’t want to try that because I don’t know if they know how to use that take. Any take I give them can be used against me.’ And when you have a director who is so convinced of what their vision is, that’s when you say, ‘Great. You say jump, I’ll say “How high?”‘

When “Snowpiercer” hit theaters in 2013, it

Last month, Sky Ferreira fans who run a social media campaign dubbed “Free Sky Ferreira” bought a digital billboard in Times Square emblazoned with their titular demand. The group believes Ferreira has been “held hostage by her label Capitol Records for almost a decade” and blames the label for “blocking” the release of Masochism, her sophomore album that’s been teased since 2015. Yesterday, that same fan-run campaign paid a plane to fly over Capitol Records with a banner that read “Free Sky Ferreira.”

Ferreira has shown her support for the group by liking and commenting on their social media posts. In August, she shared the Times Square billboard post in an Instagram story and added the caption “It’s true.” During one of her concerts back in June, she held up a fan-made sign onstage that read “Free Sky Ferreira” as well. Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for Ferreira and Capitol Records for comment.

Last year, Ferreira returned with her most recent single, “Don’t Forget,” marking her first song since the 2019 one-off “Downhill Lullaby.” In January of this year, she posted a snippet of new music on her Instagram with the caption “I WANT TO PUT THIS OUT.” She then took to Instagram stories to post several statements about the “beyond fucked up” situation, claiming “LOOK AT THE DATE. 2019. I TRIED TO PUT OUT THIS SONG FOREVER AGO.” She continued:

I am not a hysterical/lying/lazy lunatic. I can pull up performances from 2014 of unreleased singles too. This is beyond fucked up. I am so frustrated & over it…Being “difficult” or “high strung” doesn’t give people the right to damage & stall my career. I am in a DIFFICULT situation & I have to be “difficult” to get through it. I have to protect my work & myself somehow? A lot of it is not being allowed to say or do anything I want/need without it being dismissed. The thing I actively tried to avoid happens & it somehow gets reversed. I can’t think of a time in the last 7 years where I’ve been able to just focus on what I’m supposed to do & my work being presented the way I want it to or my shows being the way one needs it to be to be perform & play well. Despite having to basically sacrifice every aspect of my life to make sure it happens & the amount of time/work I put into everything beforehand. It’s not okay. If I’m not allowed to say something without consequence & the people who are supposed to do their job refuse to look out for me… How am I not going to be “difficult”?!?

Following a string of summer concerts, Ferreira recently announced she’s going back on tour this fall, with stops scheduled in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and more. A release date for the follow-up to her 2013 debut Night Time, My Time has yet to materialize. In 2019, she teamed up with Charli XCX for “Cross You Out” from the British pop star’s album Charli.

Public safety is at the top of mind for the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival organizers for their upcoming event in light of a stabbing spree that occurred at the last Vancouver Chinatown festival.

More than 18,000 people attended Chinatown’s Light Up Chinatown when a suspect stabbed three people at random on Sept. 10.

While that incident was isolated, organizers said they are taking no chances and are busy preparing enhanced security for the festival which will be at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30.

“We’ve really stepped up security and working really closely with (Vancouver police),” Lorraine Lowe told Global News, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden’s executive director. “Anybody that’s visiting … it’s a ticketed event. They need to show their ticket. It (will be an) all secured and gated (event). We’ve (will have) several security guards on site.”

Report shows accused Vancouver Chinatown stabber was considered a threat

The preparations are being made as the community is still rallying behind the victims of the triple stabbing. Chinatown leaders like Carol Lee, Vancouver Chinatown Foundation’s chair, are behind a fundraiser that will help the victims with medical expenses, counselling and therapy.

“That’s really our focus right now. Supporting the victims (and) supporting the healing process for them,” Lee said.

The most serious injuries were sustained by a 24-year-old woman. The other two victims were a couple in their 60s.

“She was the one most seriously injured (and) I think it was really traumatic for her but she’s doing better,” Lee said.

The event has raised more than $7,000 so far with a $15,000 goal. Global News has reached out to Vancouver police for comment.

“Heaven gained the most beautiful angel today … I miss you and I love you. I’ll forever save our last messages of ‘I love you,’” the Chrisley Knows Best alum, 26, shared via Instagram Story.

“Please send me a sign that you’re OK,” she asked. “Maybe it’ll be thru [sic] a ham and cheese crepe … or pasta with white sauce … or maybe your favorite carrot cake.”

She concluded, “We loved hard … and I can’t wait to ride bikes along the beaches of heaven with you one day.”

At 90 years old, actor Michael Caine has experienced quite a lot in his life. The father and grandfather has plenty to say about those experiences in a new interview with the Daily Mail in which he discusses, among other topics, the #MeToo movement and the growing use of intimacy coordinators on set. After expressing surprise at the job title for those who coordinate intimate scenes between actors, Caine explained, “In my day you just did the love scene and got on with it without anyone interfering. It’s all changed.”

Caine was joined in the interview by fellow actor John Standing, who agreed that things are different these days — but emphasized that they are each trying to learn as much as they can. The two have a total of seven grandchildren who all play a big role in that education, but noted that doesn’t mean it’s fun.

When it comes to learning new-to-him language that’s not considered offensive, “I try, but it’s hard. I like to learn from friends who are younger than me.”

Both Caine and Standing agree that spending time with people who are younger than them helps keep them mentally sharp and engaged. Their grandchildren are important in their lives, so much so that Caine says they’ve given him a reason to live as long as possible.

“You want to go on living because they are so much a part of you, and you want to live forever to see what they do with their lives,” Caine explained. “You just want to keep going.”

Both actors are starring in the upcoming film “The Great Escaper,” which tells the story of Bernard Jordan, who set out toward Normandy at the age of 89 without telling anyone where he was going. He soon found himself dubbed the Great Escaper in news reports about his disappearance.

Shahid Kapoor in Jab We Met.

Shahid Kapoor recently recounted an interesting anecdote about how he persuaded the makers of Jab We Met to allow him to wear glasses.

Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who marked his entry into the industry with the 2003 film Ishq-Vishq, recently revealed his early struggles in clinching film roles. Shahid also recounted an interesting anecdote about how he persuaded the makers of Jab We Met to allow him to wear glasses. In the film Shahid portrayed the character Aditya Kashyap, known for his reserved personality in contrast to Kareena Kapoor’s lively character, Geet.

In a chat with Film Companion, Shahid said, “I fought with everybody. I was like, ‘I want to wear glasses for this,’ and everybody’s like, ‘Are you mad?’ Hero glasses thodi pehenta hai? Tu gaana kaise gayega?” (Hero does not wear glasses, how will you sing?) Shahid recalled that he had to clarify to the filmmakers that Aditya’s character contemplated suicide at the start of the movie and thought of jumping off a train. He assured them that he would take off the glasses when required to sing. However, their reply was, “Are you mad? This is a love story.”

The actor added, “I felt like that will at least help people see me in a different way. Otherwise, I was always looking the same in every film of mine. And then I started making much bigger physical changes because it kind of empowered me to make more decisions. Like Kaminey was my first complete transition from what people were used to seeing me – usually clean-shaven and very boyish.”

On the work front, Shahid Kapoor has three films lined up. He will next be seen in directors Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah’s Impossible Love Story, Aditya Nimbalkar’s Bull and a remake of the 1964 film Woh Kaun Thi? It is also rumoured that Shahid could reunite with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for a film.

The Writers Guild of America and the major Hollywood studios are closing in on a deal that would end a 145-day strike that has roiled the film and TV business and caused thousands of job losses.

Lawyers for the two sides were hammering out the details of a tentative agreement on Saturday during a meeting that began mid-morning, according to people close to the discussions who were not authorized to comment.

Saturday marked the fourth straight day of talks, which kicked off Wednesday with the heads of four major studios participating directly.

Should the companies reach an agreement this weekend, they won’t immediately restart productions. The entertainment company leaders still must turn their attention to the 160,000-member performers union, SAG-AFTRA, to accelerate those stalled talks in an effort to get the industry back to work.

The thorniest issues in the long-running labor dispute have included language governing the use of artificial intelligence, minimum staffing in writers rooms and the establishment of residuals to reward scribes based on viewership of streaming series.

The work stoppage began in early May and gained momentum as actors led by SAG-AFTRA joined writers on the picket line in mid-July, further shutting down film and scripted television productions and hobbling studios’ ability to promote would-be blockbuster movies.

Any agreement on a new three-year film and TV contract would have to be ratified by a vote of the WGA’s 11,500 members, who have strongly supported the walkout and have enjoyed unusual levels of solidarity from fellow unions amid the nation’s “hot labor summer.”

There has been significant pressure on both sides to reach an agreement in recent weeks. Many Hollywood industry workers have struggled to pay their rent and bills, with some moving out of state to make ends meet. Studios have also felt the financial pain, modifying their film slates and leaning on unscripted television.

WGA negotiators met with studio representatives Wednesday for the first time since a disastrous meeting in late August. This week, top executives joined the proceedings: Walt Disney Co.’s Bob Iger, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav and NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley.

Friday’s marathon session started at 11 a.m. at the headquarters of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers — which represents the big entertainment companies — in Sherman Oaks. The meeting ended at about 8:30 p.m., amid growing hopes that the sides would be able to reach an accord before the Yom Kippur holiday.

“What I seek is the beginning, so I may finally bring this cycle to an end.”

Ahsoka‘s Baylan Skoll isn’t interested in ruling like Thrawn. The former Jedi Knight has a far more ambitious goal, one that will free the galaxy from war between Jedi and Sith. He believes the power he needs to achieve his plan can be found Peridea, but what exactly is “the beginning” he seeks on that ancient wasteland? If the old fairytales are true, Baylan Skoll might be looking for the very source of the Force itself.

Who Was Baylan Skoll Before Ahsoka?

Lucasfilm

Baylan Skoll was a young Jedi Knight and General in the Clone Wars. He was roughly the same age as Anakin Skywalker during the galactic conflict.

Somehow Baylan Skoll not only survived Order 66, he learned what became of Anakin. Few people ever discovered Anakin Skywalker was Darth Vader. Knowing what became of the most famous Jedi and Anakin’s role in destroying the Order changed Baylan Skoll’s entire outlook on life.

Why Did Anakin Skywalker Cause Baylan Skoll to Lose His Faith?

Baylan Skoll lost his “faith” in the Jedi. Their failures during the Clone Wars, combined with Anakin’s role in causing so much horror, destroyed Baylan’s entire belief system. But the former Jedi still misses “the idea” of what the Order was supposed to be as guardians of peace and justice. He wishes the Jedi had lived up to its best ideals, which he still sees as noble. It’s why on Ahsoka he’s shown an unexpected amount of reverence for the Jedi, including for Ahsoka Tano herself.

Baylan Skoll stands framed by a gold ship's interior on Ahsoka
Lucasfilm

Still, he doesn’t miss “the truth” of what the Jedi became. Baylan said that “weakness” is the real Jedi legacy, one shared by Anakin and Ahsoka. It’s a legacy of arrogance and rigid dogma that resulted in death and destruction. He believes Jedi failure was so ingrained in the Order that when Baylan fought Ahsoka he called their battle “inevitable” because Jedi only know violence.

Baylan believed in the Jedi so much the pain over what they became still hurts. The only time he’s ever shown real emotion on Ahsoka is when he got angry while fighting Lady Tano and when he made clear he’s no longer a Jedi. However, his obvious hatred for Anakin Skywalker and comments about the Empire also indicates he has no love for Sith, either.

Would Baylan have lost his faith completely if he never learned Anakin Skywalker’s fate? We don’t know and probably never can. What is clear is that knowledge sent Baylan down a path few others have ever walked.

Is Baylan Skoll a Grey Jedi or Sith?

Baylan Skoll locked in lightsaber battle with Ahsoka
Lucasfilm

Baylan Skoll is “no Jedi.” But despite murdering people in cold blood, he’s not like a Sith Lord, either. He has ethics and is not seeking power for his own benefit. Baylan thinks war is “evil” even if necessary. He also keeps his word (to a point) with captured enemies and doesn’t kill unless he thinks he must. And he wants something better for the galaxy than what the Jedi and Sith have given it.

Baylan has his own moral compass that puts him somewhere between the Jedi and the Sith. He’s pragmatic rather than having a strict ideology. His approach is Machiavellian, where the ends justify the means, because he believes “one must destroy in order to create.”

What he wants to create is seemingly a future without the death and destruction that burned down everything he’s ever known.

Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati look out on the horizon on Ahsoka
Lucasfilm

Baylan Skoll would seem to stand along the proverbial middle point between light and dark. That, along with his orange lightsaber, has led to some to ask if he qualifies as a Gray Jedi. The concept of a Jedi who straddles the light and dark sides of the Force comes from Star Wars Legends. It’s not part of Disney canon, and some don’t even believe Gray Jedi ever existed and the term is meaningless.

Therefore, Baylan Skoll is not a Gray Jedi, because they aren’t a thing. He only shares a few similarities with that nebulous definition anyway. He’s something else entirely, something that makes him one of the most interesting and unique Force users in Star Wars history. He’s a powerful, practical warrior who believes it doesn’t matter whether Jedi or Sith rule the galaxy because the existence of both means war is always on the horizon. That is unless he can end the cycle forever.

That quest is what brought him to Peridea.

What Is “The Beginning” Baylan Skoll Seeks on Ahsoka?

Shin Hati looks at Baylan Skoll on a Nightsister temple on Ahsoka
Lucasfilm

Baylan Skoll did not go to a distant wasteland just to bring back Thrawn. Baylan Skoll went to Peridea, a “land of dreams and madness,” because it calls out to him. Something “stirs” in the Nightsisters’ original home. Whatever that is it is powerful enough the Great Mothers want to flee Peridea.

Baylan Skoll doesn’t fear what he hears. He wants to use that immense power to end the vicious, inevitable cycle of war Jedi and Sith have created in his own galaxy. To do that he seeks “the beginning,” and the Jedi and Sith began with the Force during a time when the Pathway to Peridea first opened.

Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll in black with his white beard on Ahsoka
Lucasfilm

Baylan’s plan—driven by a desire to end the Jedi, Sith, and possibly even other Force users and the galaxy they’ve created—raises monumental questions about all of Star Wars. Is Peridea where the Force began? The very center of it? Or is it simply where the future Jedi and Sith first discovered that immense power? And what would it mean for Baylan to find “the beginning” of the Force, which exists everywhere? How could someone even destroy something that powerful and omnipresent, something every living thing carries inside them? Or is it that the Great Mothers fleeing their planet because the Force is becoming too powerful for everyone? Something too dark even for them? Something that wild destroy Baylan if he locates it?

The future of the galaxy far, far away hangs in the balance on Peridea, but not because Thrawn is back. The Grand Admiral seeks a power that is fleeting. Baylan Skoll seeks something that predates the Jedi and the Sith, something that will put an end to both forever.

If you want to easily share contact information with someone, Apple’s NameDrop is an efficient tool. With the recent launch of iOS 17, however, some consumers worry that accessing the new tool boasts a steep learning curve. That’s not true at all, as it’s quite simple to get started with NameDrop. Here’s our guide on how to share contact information like a true boss.

What is NameDrop?

NameDrop is a feature that comes with iOS 17. It allows you to instantaneously send contact information to other people just by placing your iPhone near to their iPhone. This is similar to the pre-existing Tap to Share toolset, but with a specialized emphasis on contact information. There have been plenty of third-party apps that do this sort of thing, but this is Apple’s first-party solution.

How to use NameDrop to share contact information

NameDrop is extremely simple. Just hold your iPhone near the top of someone else’s iPhone. That’s it. You’ll see a faint glow emerge from the top of both devices to indicate a successful connection and NameDrop will appear on both screens.

Apple

Once connected, you’ll be able to adjust exactly what contact information gets shared between the two devices. You can receive the other person’s information, send your information or do both at once. If you want to cancel, just move the phone away before the system finishes its dark magic.

This only works for new contacts, though, and cannot be used to update pre-existing contact information. You can get around this limitation by deleting the contact before going in for the NameDrop.

How to use contacts on iPhone to share information

NameDrop requires that both phones are updated to iOS 17, and that’s not always a realistic possibility. You have another choice for sending out contact information. Just head into the Contacts app and select Share Contact. Select the specific data you want to share and tap Done. Finally, select the delivery method. You can choose between Messages, Mail and several other options. This isn’t as easy as moving one phone close to another phone, but it should still take just a few seconds.

Vince Vaughn told us in his 1996 film, Swingers, to always double down on 11 when playing blackjack.

Now he’s advanced to sports betting advice, appearing as the celebrity guest Saturday on ESPN’s College Game Day.

Vaughn wore a Notre Dame letterman jacket as he sat on stage alongside Pat McAfee, Lee Corso, and Desmond Howard

He explained that he was wearing the jacket because of his role in the 1993 sports film classic, Rudy, the story of an undersized lineman who made a play for the ages in Notre Dame football. Vaughn played quarterback Jamie O’Hara in the film, and cited that as his reason when he picked Notre Dame to win over the Ohio State Buckeyes

“The Buckeyes are for real, always. You can never doubt them. That being said, I played for Notre Dame — I threw a pass. If I had half the heart of Rudy, I would have been All-American instead of picking games up here with you guys.”

Denis Villeneuve has emerged as one of the most vocal proponents for the preservation of theatrical moviegoing in recent years. In addition to combining Hollywood spectacle with cerebral filmmaking with his star-studded “Dune” movies, he remains a passionate supporter of his fellow blockbuster auteurs.

As a believer in movie theaters as a communal experience, he has had a lot to celebrate this summer with the success of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” In a new interview with the Associated Press, Villeneuve said that he always expected “Oppenheimer” to be a financial success. But he admits that the film’s massive box office haul has outpaced even his most optimistic predictions.

“Where it is right now has blown the roof off of my projection,” Villeneuve said of “Oppenheimer.” “It’s a three-hour movie about people talking about nuclear physics.”

Much of the success of “Oppenheimer” can be attributed to IMAX and 70mm film screenings, which offer fans an experience that is not possible to replicate through home viewing (and help distributors through higher ticket prices). Villeneuve said that he believes the use of large formats like IMAX to turn films into events represents a path forward for the film industry.

“The future of cinema is IMAX and the large formats,” he said. “The audience wants to see something that they cannot have at home, that they cannot have on streaming. They want to experience an event.”

While Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” was initially scheduled to hit theaters this fall, it was delayed to 2024 amid a recent shuffling of Warner Bros.’ release calendar. But the Oscar nominee is already thinking ahead to future entries in his sci-fi franchise. He recently teased that he has begun to brainstorm ideas for a potential third “Dune” movie that would pull heavily from Frank Herbert’s follow-up novel “Dune Messiah.”

“If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream,” Villeneuve said. “’Dune Messiah’ was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero. Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”

One of the most hotly contested debates in the entertainment industry in recent years has been over the need (or lack thereof) for intimacy coordinators on film sets. On mainstream projects, the practice has been widely adopted on as a method of prioritizing the safety of actors performing sex scenes. But a growing chorus of detractors have voiced their belief that adding additional steps to the process ruins the spontaneity and compromises a film’s artistic integrity.

Count Michael Caine among the latter group. In a new interview with the Daily Mail to promote his role in the upcoming World War II drama “The Great Escaper,” Caine waded into the ongoing discourse over intimacy coordinators. Like many of his peers, the two-time Oscar winner questioned the value of having professionals on set to choreograph and supervise sex scenes.

“Really? Seriously? What are they? We never had that in my day,” Caine said when asked about intimacy coordinators. “Thank God I’m 90 and don’t play lovers anymore is all I can say. In my day you just did the love scene and got on with it without anyone interfering. It’s all changed.”

Caine also shared his thoughts on what he sees as the prevalence of political correctness in the entertainment industry. While he said that he is making an effort to learn from his younger co-stars, Caine feels like evolving cultural norms have limited his ability to speak freely.

“It’s dull,” he said. “Not being able to speak your mind and not being able to call anyone ‘darling.’”

While Caine has voiced disagreement with certain trends impacting the film industry, he has also suggested that his days of working on films might be winding down. In another interview this week, the actor said that he is already “sort of” retired and spoke about the physical difficulties that he faced while shooting “The Great Escaper.”

“I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that,” Caine told The Telegraph. “They gave me a very good walking stick, and I was able to do scenes that needed that. I’d just do them once, and then fall over. But just one take, and that’s it. Forget it.”

One of the most hotly contested debates

WGA West’s former chief negotiator David Young has been pulling the strings on negotiations with the Hollywood studios, Hollywood showrunners said in a private text group.

According to a text shared on Friday night in a 500-member WhatsApp group of showrunners: “Turns out the WGA negotiating committee calls David and runs everything by him.”

The text went on to say that on Thursday night the WGA and AMPTP had agreed to a deal, but Young told them to go back and “ask for those other two points and ‘squeeze their nuts the same way we did the agents.’”

The text continued, “That’s what happened and that’s who’s been behind the scenes this entire time, hence why it’s taking so long.”

The WGA did not respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Young left due to what was described as a medical leave of absence, and Ellen Stutzman took his place as chief negotiator when talks between the WGA and AMPTP began.

The text said the deal is “on the one-yard line” and expected by Sunday evening “or earlier.”

Young has been with the WGA for almost two decades and drove a hard bargain with Hollywood agencies to end packaging fees in 2021.

The text alleges that Young did not actually step down due to a medical issue, but TheWrap has been unable to verify the reason given and has blacked it out of the text below. The text also says The Hollywood Reporter’s Kim Masters has the story, but Masters said on X she hasn’t “made a single call” about the story.

A text shared in a large showrunners WhatsApp group says David Young has been steering WGA negotiations

Negotiations between the WGA and AMPTP have progressed intensely over the past few days. The two groups reconvened on Saturday to hash out two final points regarding AI protection and minimum staffing.

Hollywood has been at a standstill as the writers were joined by SAG-AFTRA on the picket lines in July, with both unions pushing for new deals that reflect the changed entertainment landscape after the rise of streaming.

Four studio CEOs— Disney’s Bob Iger, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav — have been present throughout the negotiations at the AMPTP’s Sherman Oaks headquarters.

The contents of the text were first reported by The Ankler.

“It’s finally Ugg season,” she says in the clip while holding up the Classic Dipper boot. “I got these Uggs right here because they have such a cute platform and I love everything with a platform,” she explains before adding, “I wish these were out when I was in high school.”

Cardi paired her Ugg boots with green cargo pants; a cropped, white long sleeve hooded shirt and a brown Chanel bag. The Classic Dipper boot is available in chestnut and black and features a “calf-hugging” silhouette, suede upper, side zippers and a platform heel.

The boot is lined with a recycled wool blend, while the outsole is made from “renewable, rainwater-nourished sugarcane instead of petroleum-based EVA,” per the product description.

The Classic Dipper boot is available at Ugg.com and retailers such as Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Amazon, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Want more style inspiration from Cardi? The “Bongos” rapper sports the Classic Dipper boot with baggy jeans and a fitted jacket in the Ugg’s campaign announcing the launch of Ugg Season. Natalia Bryant and A$AP Nas star in the Australian brand’s fall/winter campaign showcasing the new Dipper Boot and Neumel Weather Hybrid ($180).

And that’s not the only way Cardi is celebrating the autumn equinox. The Bronx native released Pumpkin Spice Whipshots, a limited-edition flavor of her spiked whipped cream, earlier in the month. Pumpkin Spice Whipshots are available at Whipshots.com and retailers such as Total Wine while supplies last.

Maury Povich wants to set the record straight on whether or not Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are half-brothers.

During a recent interview with McConaughey, E! News shared a video message from Povich, in which the former “Maury” host told the actor that he “would come out of retirement” to give him and Harrelson a DNA test.

“We could do primetime, ‘DNA, Maury’s Back With Woody And Matthew.’ I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair,” Povich said in the video. “Woody’s got my number. I’m ready.”

The retired television personality, known for his signature “you are not the father” phrase, conducted DNA tests on his eponymous talk show “Maury,” which aired from 1991 to 2022.

McConaughey, who was promoting his debut children’s picture book “Just Because” on E! News, said in response to the clip, “I don’t know if we’re going to be calling you to do it on your show, but I like the way you’re thinking.”

Earlier this year, McConaughey revealed on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast that he’s been questioning whether Harrelson is actually related to him.

“In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families,” McConaughey said. “And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”

While McConaughey believes Harrelson would be more inclined to take a DNA test, he himself is less enthusiastic about the idea.

“It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ McConaughey explained. “I got a little more skin in the game.”

THREE prisoners have escaped from an unlocked police van in a slapstick moment after officers apparently stopped for a cup of tea.

The detainees were seen peeking through the vehicle’s windows before fleeing after cops in charge of them nipped out for a break.

Their flit was captured on camera as the inmates were being transported to appear before Jhansi Railway magistrates in India.

The escapees are believed to still be on the loose – but eight officers have now been suspended on suspicion of neglecting their duties.

Police are accused of leaving the blue prison bus unguarded during a tea break in Jhansi, in the northern Indian state Uttar Pradesh.

The inmates took their chance and scarpered along the busy street, letting themselves out of the back of the vehicle before running off in different directions.

Jhansi’s police force said in a statement: “Police officers who were careless have been suspended.

“The three men will be detained soon.”

Cases have reportedly been filed against not only the three prisoners on the run but also three police sub-inspectors and five constables.

Local reports suggest the officers have now been sacked.

Police chief Jogendra Kumar said: “The allegations against them are so serious that keeping them in the police force will have a negative effect on other police personnel.

“And the possibility of a major incident occurring in the future cannot be ruled out.”

One of Britain’s most shocking prison breaks came at high-security HMP Pankhurst on the Isle of Wight in 1995.

Other jail escapees have included US gangster John Dillinger and conman Frank Abagnale whose life inspired Hollywood film Catch Me If You Can starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.

Savannah Chrisley is reacting to the sudden death of her ex-fiancé Nic Kerdiles.

The 26-year-old reality TV star took to her Instagram Story on Saturday and posted a Boomerang of her and Nic sharing a kiss. She overlayed the boom with the text, “I’m still hoping you respond to my text.”

The post comes just hours after it was first reported that Nic died early Saturday morning in a motorcycle crash in north Nashville. Police said the crash occurred just after 3:30 a.m. after he ran a stop sign and crashed into the driver’s side of a BMW.

According to WKRN, which was first to report the news, cops say the driver of the BMW stopped after the crash and that neither Nic nor the BMW driver showed signs of impairment. Nic was then taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died. He was 29.

Prior to the tragic accident, Nic posted on his Instagram Story a photo of himself on his motorcycle.

He added the caption, “Night rider.”

A group of prominent novelists, including John Grisham, Jonathan Franzen and Elin Hilderbrand, are joining the legal battle against OpenAI over its chatbot technology, as fears about the encroachment of artificial intelligence on creative industries continue to grow.

More than a dozen authors filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on Tuesday, accusing the company, which has been backed with billions of dollars in investment from Microsoft, of infringing on their copyrights by using their books to train its popular ChatGPT chatbot. The complaint, which was filed along with the Authors Guild, said that OpenAI’s chatbots can now produce “derivative works” that can mimic and summarize the authors’ books, potentially harming the market for authors’ work, and that the writers were neither compensated nor notified by the company.

“The success and profitability of OpenAI are predicated on mass copyright infringement without a word of permission from or a nickel of compensation to copyright owners,” the complaint said.

The complaint, which was filed in United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, said that while OpenAI does not publicly declare which works it uses to train its models, the company has admitted to using copyrighted material. The complaint also said that OpenAI’s ChatGPT is capable of producing summaries of books that include details not available in reviews or elsewhere online, which suggests the underlying program was fed the books in their entirety.

The Authors Guild lawsuit is the latest in a series brought by writers against OpenAI. It is likely to generate attention because of its high-profile plaintiffs, who include best-selling novelists from a range of genres, among them David Baldacci, Jodi Picoult, George R.R. Martin, George Saunders and Michael Connelly.

Douglas Preston, a novelist who joined the lawsuit, said he was shocked when he asked ChatGPT to describe minor characters in his books and it spat back detailed information that wasn’t available in reviews or Wikipedia entries for the novels.

“That’s when I looked at this and said, ‘My God, ChatGPT has read my books, how many of my books has it read?’” he said. “It knew everything, and that’s when I got a bad feeling.”

A representative for OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in November, authors, publishers and retailers have been trying to rein in the rampant and increasingly disruptive incursion of A.I. in the industry. Already, there has been a rise in A.I.-generated books on Amazon, including travel guides and books on plant and fungi foraging, which prompted the New York Mycological Society to issue a warning to avoid A.I.-generated guides.

Amazon has taken steps to monitor and curb the influx of A.I.-generated books. This month, it posted new guidelines for self-published authors, requiring them to disclose whether they had used A.I. to create texts. It also limited the number of titles users can upload to its self-publishing platform each day, to three. Amazon does not currently disclose which books are created by A.I. to its customers, but it may do so in the future, according to an Amazon representative.

A handful of other lawsuits have been filed in recent months by writers against OpenAI and Meta, the parent of Facebook and Instagram. This month, Michael Chabon, Ayelet Waldman and Matthew Klam were among a group of writers who collectively sued OpenAI and Meta, which has also developed A.I. technology, for copyright infringement.

In a filing last month for another suit brought by authors, lawyers for OpenAI moved to dismiss the bulk of plaintiffs’ claims, and argued that using texts “for innovations,” including training A.I., constitutes fair use.

Copyright questions surrounding A.I. remain unresolved, and experts are divided over whether authors’ claims of infringement will hold up in court. Some argue that if an A.I. program is ingesting copyrighted works for training but creates new works that are substantially different, that constitutes fair use. Others, however, believe the authors’ argument is likely to prevail.

“They’ve scraped all this content and put it into their databases without asking permission — that seems like a huge grab of content,” said Edward Klaris, a lawyer who specializes in intellectual property and media law. “I think courts are going to say that copying into the database is an infringement in itself.”

Mary Bly, who publishes historical romance novels under the name Eloisa James, said she joined the Authors Guild suit because she worried that if writers failed to draw boundaries around their work, technology companies would continue to plunder and imitate them.

“This lawsuit is important because it establishes a line in the sand,” she said. “If you’re going to train things in the future on my books, you need to license them. You can’t just take things.”

Dolly Parton has a new album coming out on Nov. 17 that will be a little different than her previous releases. “Rockstar” includes both original songs and covers of rock classics, including “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes. Parton explained in a statement that there are two big reasons why she wanted to cover the song: “First of all, I love Linda Perry. Second of all, I love this song written by Linda.”

Parton also saw the video for the song as an opportunity to share a bigger message with the world. She continued, “I love being a part of this video to try to make people think about what’s going on in this world today. Shout out to the little children that helped with the video! If our children don’t make it, then what will? Again, I ask, ‘What’s Up?’ Enjoy.”

The music video that accompanies the song is pretty special. Filmed at Eakin Elementary in Nashville, Tennesee, Parton is joined by Linda Perry herself, who plays guitar while Parton sings the melody onstage. As the two dive deeper into the song, children begin to file into the theater as their audience.

Original 4 Non Blondes lead singer Perry was just as happy to have Parton cover her song as the country legend was to do it. In her own statement, Perry explained, “Her version of ‘What’s Up?’ is so good. Her spin on it made me feel like it was her song. No surprise there.”

The idea for “Rockstar” seems to date back to Parton being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. While she initially declined the nomination, she ultimately accepted and went on to create “Rockstar” with a who’s-who of rock music as she sought to mix a little extra rock into her country sound.

Parton has been drumming up interest in “Rockstar” since May 2023, when she performed her single “World on Fire” at the Academy of Country Music Awards. “Rockstar” will also include covers of “Let It Be” with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions” by Queen and Heart’s “Magic Man.”

The WGA and Hollywood’s major studios are in the final phase of hammering out a three-year contract that will bring an end to one of the longest strikes in Hollywood history.

Legal representatives for labor and management were said to be huddling on the fine print of language in complicated contract issues such as the use of generative artificial intelligence and groundbreaking elements for the WGA’s minimum basic agreement, such as a formula for a minimum staff guarantee for episodic TV and a “success-based” residual from subscription platforms that is designed to funnel more money into the WGA’s pension and health funds. The nitty gritty details of the terms around the AI proposal has been one of the final hurdles to overcome, multiple sources said.

“It’s mainly down to language now,” one industry insider said.

The negotiations were jumpstarted this week by the presence of four top executives — Disney’s Bob Iger, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley. Those four took part in three days of marathon negotiations that broke the months-long impasse between the WGA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the bargaining unit for the major studios and streamers.

The senior executives were not in the room Saturday but likely monitoring from afar. Insiders familiar with the situation said the approach of the Yom Kippur holiday on Sunday evening became an unofficial deadline target, once it became clear the sides were making real progress earlier this week.

Reps for the AMPTP and WGA did not respond to requests for comment on Saturday. The WGA has been on strike since May 2. Once the WGA deal is wrapped, SAG-AFTRA is waiting in the wings to return to talks and end the first industry-wide strike by the performers guild in more than 40 years. SAG-AFTRA’s work stoppage began July 14.

The upcoming MCU timeline book officially licensed by Marvel contradicts Agents of SHIELD fans‘ long-held beliefs that the show is canon.

When Agents of SHIELD first premiered on ABC in 2013, it was marketed as a tie-in to the MCU films. The series was headlined by Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson, who had a bad date with the business end of Loki’s bladed staff in 2012’s The Avengers and seemingly did not survive.

But he was brought back from the dead in Agents of SHIELD to lead a new team of spies and agents. With dozens of references to the wider MCU in the series’ first few seasons, it was easy to believe that SHIELD was legitimately connected to the movies. But as the show went on, those connections became more tenuous.

Marvel

Notably, none of the Marvel Studios films, series, or specials ever made direct reference to SHIELD or any of the other series made by the Marvel Television branch. Eventually, Marvel TV was shuttered, marking the end of the Jeph Loeb-produced programs.

Marvel Timeline Book the Final Nail in SHIELD’s Coffin?

DK Book’s upcoming Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline lays out every event that happened in the MCU‘s first four phases in an easily digestible, chronological format.

It doesn’t hit retailers until late October, but thanks to an extended preview offered by Amazon, the book’s contents are now searchable.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline book search
Amazon

If one were to enter the name Phil Coulson into the search, they’d be met with a small number of results. It’s too small to accommodate all the occurrences in which he was involved from Agents of SHIELD, the show that Coulson starred in for seven seasons.

By searching further, including in the index, it’s easy to see that all Agents of SHIELD material has been completely omitted. There’s no mention of the Terrigen outbreak, Ghost Rider, or Chronicoms.

On top of that, nothing from shows like Daredevil, Cloak and Dagger, or Runaways was listed either.

Arguably, Marvel Studios does not view these properties as official MCU canon, which is likely why none of them have crossed over into any of the produced projects.

Were the Marvel Television Shows Ever Canon?

Marvel Television’s output was obviously never a consideration for Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel Studios.

Heroes like Daisy Johnson have never crossed over into films or Disney+ shows, despite heavy speculation that she’d appear in Secret Invasion. Other key Marvel TV players like Melinda May and Tyrone Johnson were never so much as namedropped in something like Avengers: Endgame.

Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock guest spots in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law sparked some hope that his backstory from the Netflix shows would remain in continuity, but allusions to those shows are not found in the timeline book.

And, in fact, several people involved with the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series stated that the show is doing its own thing, marking a lack of concern for what went down in the three seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil.

Despite what is sure to be viewed as a major upset to some fans, just because Marvel Studios deemed these series to be non-canon shouldn’t take away even a shred of enjoyment that has been held by audiences.

If Agents of SHIELD creates joy for someone, then what does it matter if it doesn’t factor into something else? The series stood on its own two feet and delighted viewers for years. There’s something to be said about that.

Published by Dorling Kindersley, Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline releases on October 25.

Summary

  • The absence of the Joker in The Flash movie helped it avoid criticism by not adding another overused villain to the DC movie landscape.
  • The altered timeline in The Flash, caused by Barry saving his mother, made it impossible to include Flashpoint’s Joker in the film’s narrative.
  • The return of Michael Keaton’s Batman suggests that including Martha Wayne’s Joker wouldn’t have worked due to the pre-established history and retired status of Keaton’s version of the character.

Although The Flash had an intriguing opportunity to include the Joker, the villain’s absence did help the DC movie avoid one key criticism. In The Flash, Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) inadvertently alters the timeline after preventing his mother’s death in the past. Adapted from the iconic Flashpoint story from the original comics, this creates a massive chain reaction that could have included one of the most equally terrifying and fascinating Jokers of all time.

The Flash’s titular hero broke the universe by saving his mother, creating a far worse timeline where there weren’t any heroes to prevent the invasion of General Zod in 2013. Wonder Woman was missing, Aquaman was never born, Victor Stone had yet to become Cyborg, and Kal-El’s pod was intercepted by Zod who killed the young Kryptonian before he could land on Earth. Likewise, Ben Affleck’s Batman was replaced by Michael Keaton’s version who had retired as the Dark Knight. That being said, the comics’ original Flashpoint had a much darker timeline with one of its most tragic changes being a new version of the Joker.

Why The Flash Needed To Cut Flashpoint’s Joker Story

In 2011’s Flashpoint from Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, one of the biggest changes in the alternate DC timeline was the death of young Bruce Wayne who was killed instead of his parents. In their grief, both Thomas and Martha Wayne were transformed. While Thomas became a much darker and more aggressive Dark Knight than the original version his son was meant to become, Martha went absolutely insane with a haunting transformation into the Flashpoint universe’s Joker.

Keeping that in mind, 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice saw Jeffery Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan being cast as the Thomas and Martha to Ben Affleck’s Batman. Naturally, this generated large amounts of excitement and speculation when it was confirmed that Flash’s solo movie would be adapting Flashpoint. However, multiple years of rewrites, different directors, and all kinds of delays led to a much different Flash film than was likely originally conceived. That being said, perhaps the lack of Joker was ultimately a good thing. After all, The Joker is one of the most prevalent and overused villains when it comes to the overall DC movie landscape.

The Flash’s Batman Plot Means The Flashpoint Joker Couldn’t Have Worked

michael-keaton-batman-dark-knight-returns-lindelof-pitch

It’s also worth noting that the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman in The Flash suggests that including Martha Wayne’s Joker wouldn’t have worked in the context of the movie’s greater narrative. Not only did Keaton’s Bruce Wayne have his own pre-established history as Batman, but he was also retired from his career as the Caped Crusader. As such, he’s already associated with the Clown Prince of Crime played by Jack Nicholson as seen in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). Including Flashpoint’s Joker would have required a much different plot and altered timeline than was ultimately featured in The Flash. For one thing, it likely would have required Flashpoint Batman too.

Larian Studios has confirmed that the latest Baldur’s Gate 3 patch will let players change their character’s appearance.

The feature has been in the works for some time and will arrive with the game’s next major update.

The patch is “a big one” and is scheduled to launch today, a day later than previously expected, “to ensure through testing”, Larian said.

The studio recently said it was introducing a more rigorous patch testing process following issues with the release of a hotfix which led to a rollback.

Today’s update will introduce the Magic Mirror, which lives in the player’s camp and lets them alter their character’s appearance whenever they like.

They can also change their voice and pronouns. Race and body type can’t be changed, and nor can Origins.

Following Baldur’s Gate 3’s PC release in August, the PS5 version launched in early September.

A delayed Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will arrive later this year after split-screen co-op was removed as a feature on Series S.

Larian has said that it plans to support Baldur’s Gate 3 PC and console cross-play in the future.
