Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) MD-CEO Punit Goenka will not be able to hold any office in the merged Sony-Zee entity for now, market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has said.

In June, SEBI had barred Goenka and ZEEL chair emeritus Subhash Chandra from holding any managerial or directorial positions in listed companies while it carried out investigations into allegations of insider trading.

The merger cleared a key regulatory hurdle last week. When it is finalized, the deal may have far-reaching implications within the Indian TV and streaming sectors.

Under the original terms of the deal Goenka was to lead the merged outfit, while Sony would own a 51% controlling stake.

On Monday, SEBI upheld the June order and barred Goenka and Chandra from joining the management of ZEEL, Zee Media Corporation, Zee Media Corp and Zee Aakash News and “any resultant company that is formed pursuant to a merger or amalgamation of the above-named companies with any other company, wholly or in part” and also “any company, which is formed pursuant to demerger of any of the above-named companies.”

SEBI’s detailed 91-page order states: “Post-merger, Entity No. 2 [Goenka] would be appointed as Managing Director of the merged company. The same means that he would be entrusted with substantial powers of management of the affairs of the merged company. That very role in ZEEL is under question and therefore, till the final outcome of the proceedings in the instant matter, it would be appropriate that he is not part of the management of ZEEL or any corporate avatar of it.”

The SEBI investigation into the matter will be completed within eight months of the order, which is dated Aug. 14.

SEBI is set up to “protect the interests of investors in securities and to promote the development of and to regulate the securities market.”

Goenka declined to comment when Variety reached out.

Katrina Kaif shares a glimpse of her Independence day celebration with Vicky Kaushal. (Photos: Instagram)

Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal also hoisted a flag at their Mumbai apartment to celebrate Independence Day.

India is celebrating Independence Day on Tuesday. On this special day, one of the most loved Bollywood couples, Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal also hoisted a flag at their Mumbai apartment. Katrina took to her Instagram stories and dropped a picture in which she and Vicky can be seen standing on their balcony as they adore our national flag. With their backs towards the camera, the two actors can also be seen twinning in white. “Happy Independence Day!” the caption on the photo read. Check it out here:

Katrina Kaif’s Instagram story

Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal often drop romantic pictures from their apartment’s balcony. Earlier this month, the Phone Bhoot actress shared another picture in which she and Vicky were seen engaging in sweet PDA on their balcony.

Vicky and Katrina’s love story is straight out of a fairytale. They began dating discreetly in 2019, and after a lot of speculation, they finally tied the knot in 2021. The wedding was held at Sawai Madhopur with only close friends and family members in attendance.

On the work front, Vicky Kaushal was recently seen in Zara Hatke Zara Bachke with Sara Ali Khan. The film received a positive response and managed to have success at the box office. He will be next seen in Sam Bahadur. It is directed by Meghna Gulzar and is expected to hit theatres in December of this year.

Katrina Kaif, on the other hand, will be seen in Tiger 3 with Salman Khan. It is one of the most-awaited movies in which Shah Rukh Khan is also likely to make a special appearance. Besides Tiger 3, Katrina also has Merry Christmas with Vijay Sethupathi in her pipeline. She will also be seen in Farhan Akhtar’s next titled Jee Le Zaraa co-starring Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt. However, not much details about the movie are known as of now.

The Hollywood writers’ strike is in its fourth month, and the actors’ strike is in its fourth week with no end in sight. Many have called the stalemate an existential crisis because it concerns new issues such as residuals from streaming services and rules for the use of artificial intelligence. These go beyond the usual labor issues such as wages and benefits and cut to the heart of an industry in which streamers such as Netflix can dominate all aspects of the business.

It shouldn’t fall entirely on labor to solve these problems, though. Antitrust laws need to be invoked — as they were in the 1940s in U.S. vs. Paramount — to break up streaming services that both produce content and distribute it. This vertical integration has deeply changed the longstanding entertainment industry ecosystem, which allowed employees to survive and studios to prosper.

In recent decades, U.S. antitrust law has primarily taken aim at “horizontal monopolies” in which one or two huge companies dominate an industry and can force consumers to pay more. The vertical version — companies that control the supply chain from production to distribution, such as streaming services that also create content — hasn’t done that yet. In fact, subscription prices may have been initially underpriced to drive up demand, a practice called predatory pricing that also violates antitrust law.

Companies with this structure can wield outsize power in the industry, including against labor. As Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan recently stated, this structure “can enable firms to exert market power over creators and workers alike and potentially limit the diversity of content reaching consumers.”

For most of the first half of the 20th century, the major film studios also controlled both production and distribution. The Justice Department sued the studios under antitrust laws to break up these anticompetitive entities. In 1948, the Supreme Court ruled against the studios, requiring them to divest themselves of their movie theaters if they wanted to continue in the production business.

Shortly thereafter, theatrical films began to be aired on television with no additional compensation for creative talent. This led to the strike by both the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild in 1960, the last time the two struck simultaneously.

After a months-long standoff, a historic compromise was brokered by Actors Guild President Ronald Reagan (still a moderate Democrat) and MCA/Universal head Lew Wasserman. It established residuals for post-1960 films. The studios also contributed millions of dollars to a pension fund for talent and established new health and welfare protections.

The result was an industry ecosystem in which creative talent and technicians could earn a decent living and studios could be economically viable. The separation of the means of production and distribution stabilized the industry, allowing it to become one of America’s most culturally and economically important contributions to the world.

With modifications for new technology like home video and pay TV, this ecosystem has survived until recently. Now, streamers, by controlling both content and distribution, have great power to cut compensation and alter creative rights. This is an unsustainable economic and cultural model.

It’s hard to see how the strikes can be settled equitably and a relatively fair system restored without again invoking antitrust laws to force giant entertainment companies to separate production from streaming distribution.

The need to protect creative diversity was one compelling reason behind the Justice Department’s successful antitrust lawsuit last year to block the $2.2-billion acquisition of major publisher Simon & Schuster by Penguin Random House. (A new deal to sell to the private equity firm KKR is unlikely to prompt antitrust scrutiny, although the debt often incurred by private equity may cause other problems.)

Under both federal and California law, any person or business harmed by an anticompetitive practice can sue for an antitrust violation. That could include individual talent or the guilds — or better yet, the Justice Department or the California attorney general.

If Netflix and its streaming peers like Apple+, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and Max can maintain their vertical control, it will be next to impossible to settle the Hollywood strikes in ways that could preserve the ability of creators and technicians to earn a decent living and protect creative diversity. The old vertical studio system was broken up by the Justice Department. It may be time to do the same with these 21st century behemoths.

A new superhero character was just announced for Agatha: Coven of Chaos, the series that will spin out of the events of WandaVision.

Audiences do know some tidbits about the Kathryn Hahn-fronted Marvel series, like how a handful of Westview residents will be returning alongside newcomer Joe Locke (who many believe to be playing Wanda Maximoff’s son, Billy). Aubrey Plaza will also be making her MCU debut, though no details on her character are scarce.

Many believe Plaza will be part of the show’s titular coven—a group that seems to have just got another of its members revealed to fans.

Sasheer Zamata Reveals Her Agatha Character

Sasheer Zamata

In a new interview with Mashable, Sasheer Zamata talked about her role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series, Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Zamata revealed how her superhero character will be sorceress Jennifer Kale but that the show’s version of the character will be “very different from what… people expect:”

“I definitely did do as much [comic book] research as I could… but the way we formed this character is very different from what I think people expect.”

In the comics, Jennifer Kale is a powerful sorcerer who shared stories with Doctor Strange, Man-Thing, X-Force, the Thunderbolts, and more. Interestingly enough, the character also happens to be the cousin of both Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch, both of whom were Ghost Riders.

Jennifer Kale
Marvel

Kale is also known to practice the way of ancient Atlantean magic—which includes casting illusions, teleportation, locating, and other offensive spells. She also is known to possess the Tome of Zhered-Na, one of the most powerful magical artifacts known.

How Will Jennifer Kale Factor Into the MCU?

Jennifer Kale Marvel comics
Marvel

Given the title of Agatha: Coven of Chaos – and how Jennifer Kale is a witch – an easy assumption would be that the character is going to be part of the titular coven. But, will she be an ally to Agatha or an enemy?

The character’s, strong connection to Man-Thing is also intriguing. Could this be the first proper sign that the creature, first introduced in Werewolf by Night, will be returning to the MCU sooner rather than later?

Connection to multiple Ghost Riders is also equally as interesting. Fans have wanted to see the Spirit of Vengeance on screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time, and introducing such a notable familial tie won’t go unnoticed.

Another way Kale could factor into the MCU is her character’s unique history with Atlantis—or, as Marvel Studios established in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Talokan. Perhaps the witch can offer some new details about the city and its culture, specifically in how they might relate to the magical side of the universe.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos is expected to land in on Disney+ at some point in 2024.

Knight Terrors: Black Adam #2
[Editor’s Note: This review may contain spoilers]
Writer/Artist: Jeremy Haun

Summary

Black Adam stares down his greatest fear as his nightmare continues, in this month’s Knight Terrors: Black Adam #2.

The issue picks up right where last month’s left off: Black Adam encounters Batman in the nightmare realm, however, it turns out it’s Batman’s body possessed by Deadman. Boston Brand tries to convey the message to Adam that he’s in some sort of “thin place” (which is not exactly explained) and that he needs to fight and break free.

Adam’s powers are still on the fritz when he enters Anubis’ court where the Egyptian god of death is judging the departed. While it’s not explicitly stated, the issue implies that Anubis is judging Isis, her brother, and Black Adam’s nephew – the three most important people in Black Adam’s life – and Anubis has found them “wanting”. The issue ends with Black Adam staring down Insomni, who has now gained the powers of the Rock of Eternity.

Positives

One of the things that Knight Terrors: Black Adam #2 does well is that it captures the essence of the larger event. Knight Terrors (as you would imagine) is all about dreams and nightmares. Between its aesthetic and plot beats, this issue feels like a dream. They often feel disjointed and, if we are to believe Freud and Jung – are often laden with symbolism. Writer/artist Jeremy Haun understood the assignment and wrote/drew a comic that feels like a legitimate nightmare derived from Black Adam’s psyche.

Negatives

Alas, this issue’s strength is also its greatest weakness: the book feels very disjointed. It doesn’t do a great job explaining itself. For example, the whole “thin place” business means nothing on its face. In order to understand the context of that statement, readers must be familiar with the main story. I get that this is a tie-in, but I have this old-fashioned notion that a story should stand on its own two feet. The narrative should be self-explanatory or at least have an editor’s note explaining the context.

Also, the Anubis sequence is not very straightforward. It’s never explicitly stated who these people are, or why Black Adam was so horrified by the vision. Visually, it seems like they’re from Egypt, which led me to the conclusion that they were Adam’s family. That coupled with the fact that the last issue reestablished Isis and Osiris as canon. Nevertheless, I guessed about the second child. The only character that made sense was the boy from whom Adam stole his powers. My point though is that I should have to be guessing. Two lines of dialog could have clarified the situation easily.

Conclusion

Like most tie-ins, Knight Terrors: Black Adam #2 feels a little superfluous at best. It has nothing to do with Christopher Priest’s recent work on the character, and it doesn’t feel super relevant to the larger Knight Terrors event, unless the last page somehow relates to Insomnia’s overarching plan. However, usually, these things are simply background noise within the larger narrative.

Pokemon Sleep has been out for almost a month now, and developer Select Button has revealed what’s next for the gameified sleep tracking app. First and most importantly, new Pokemon are being added to supplement the 104 Pokemon currently available in game, but future updates will also include bug fixes and quality of life changes.

Pokemon Sleep launched with a relatively small Pokedex, with just 104 Pokemon initially able to be encountered. The current list is surprisingly spread across generations, with Pokemon available from the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos regions from launch.

The Pokemon Sleep team hasn’t specified what new Pokemon will be added first, though the current list has some obvious holes to be filled. There’s only one Dragon-type Pokemon currently available in-game, for example, which is Altaria. The fan-favorite Dragon-type evolution line including Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite isn’t in the game yet, while Pokemon Sleep also has yet to include any Legendary or Mythical Pokemon.

In updates that concern the practical side of the sleep-tracking app, Select Button is also working on adding more options for players that use the app’s relaxing sleep sounds or alarm sounds–anyone who’s tried out the app’s agressive in-built alarm tone will understand the appeal of having other options to choose from. Pokemon Sleep will also be implementing a night mode for the game’s currently blindingly white loading screen.

Select Button has also announced its first event for Pokemon Sleep, which will be “Good Sleep Day” on August 30. A post on the event has explained that, due to the full moon on August 30, “Snorlax’s Drowsy Power will be stronger than usual.” More info on the event will be released soon.

A number of known issues are also on the list to be fixed soon, including issues around goal bedtimes and berries and ingredients appearing on the screen in a position that’s difficult to collect. Overall, the Pokemon Sleep team is also working on improving the game’s performance, including its battery useage while the app is tracking sleep.

As a thank you to early adopters of the game, everyone who logs into Pokemon Sleep by September 2 will get a free gift including 10 Poke Biscuits, 30 Handy Candy S, one Growth Incense, and one Focus Incense.

Select Button has said that it will update players through in-game mail when it has a release date for these upcoming updates.

Iconic British horror label Amicus Productions is resurrecting with anthology film “In the Grip of Terror.”

Based at Shepperton Studios, Amicus was founded by American producers and screenwriters Milton Subotsky and Max Rosenberg and was active between 1962 and 1977. The outfit was mainly known for their portmanteau or anthology films featuring four or five horror shorts each, including “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors” (1965), “Torture Garden” (1967), “The House That Dripped Blood” (1971), “Tales from the Crypt” (1972), “Asylum” (1972), “Vault of Horror” (1973) and “From Beyond the Grave” (1974). A galaxy of stars including Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Joan Collins, Donald Sutherland, Herbert Lom and Patrick Magee starred in the films.

With a central theme of medical macabre, “In the Grip of Terror” will draw inspiration from “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors,” “Tales from the Crypt” and “Asylum” and will spotlight four tales rooted in the works of revered authors such as H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce and E.F Benson. The cast will feature Laurence R. Harvey (“Human Centipede II”), Megan Tremethick (“Ghost Crew”) Jonathan Hansler (“The Devil’s Machine”) and Michael Daviot (“Revenge of Innsmouth”).

Behind the Amicus revival is its new president Lawrie Brewster — known for “The Unkindness of Ravens” (2016), “The Devil’s Machine” (2019) and “Ghost Crew” (2022) — and his business partner, writer-producer Sarah Daly of Scotland-based genre production and distribution company Hex Studios. They collaborated with the family of Amicus founder Subotsky.

“The title ‘In the Grip of Terror’ was generously shared with me by Sergei Subotsky, derived from a list of potential titles his late father, Milton Subotsky, had curated decades ago,” Brewster said. “It feels profoundly fitting that we’re expanding upon the imaginative groundwork set by such a visionary. What’s even more fascinating is that three of the four stories we’re adapting were suggested by Milton’s widow and Sergei’s mother, Dr. Fiona Subotsky.”

Brewster will serve as the overall director of “In the Grip of Terror,” but there is the likelihood of additional directors for different story segments. The filmmaker and his team are also starting a crowdfunding campaign to facilitate the initial stages of the project. Their goal is far more ambitious than just one film.

“Our aim is to re-establish Amicus Productions as a beacon of independent British horror,” Brewster said. “We’re concocting a film that captures the essence and panache that rendered the studio iconic. By emphasizing atmospheric storytelling, tangible effects and a genuine respect for the genre, our vision is to teleport audiences back to British horror’s golden epoch. This venture transcends mere studio revival— it’s a renaissance of passion, tribute to a rich legacy and a testament to indie cinema’s prowess.”

Donald Trump has reacted to his latest indictment, calling it a “witch hunt” and attacking the Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis as “racist and corrupt”.

Writing on his Truth Social network, Trump condemned what he described as a politically-motivated “witch hunt”.

In reference to a document that reportedly appeared on the Fulton County court’s website with indictments against him before the charges were formally announced, Trump said: “What about those indictment documents put out today, long before the grand jury even voted, and then quickly withdrawn? Sounds rigged to me!”

Trump was indicted Monday night for the fourth time, this time out of the Georgia investigation into alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The former President is being charged with an array of crimes including violations of Georgia’s racketeering law, along with conspiracy to commit false statements and writings, and conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree.

Speaking to Fox News Digital soon after the indictment became public, Trump claimed: “Nineteen people were indicted, and the whole world is laughing at the United States as they see how corrupt and horrible a place it has turned out to be under the leadership of Crooked Joe Biden.”

The former POTUS railed against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis: “The racist and corrupt district attorney of Fulton County, which has turned out to be a murder capital of the world with among the highest violent crime levels anywhere in our country, just opened a fundraising site in order to benefit off the things she most campaigned on, ‘I will get Donald Trump’”.

He added: “This politically-inspired indictment, which could have been brought close to three years ago, was tailored for placement right smack in the middle of my political campaign, where I am leading all Republicans—by a lot—and beating Joe Biden soundly in almost all polls.”

Rudy Giuliani is one of the 18 others also indicted in the Georgia probe. The former New York mayor and Trump attorney told CBS the charges are an “affront to American democracy”, claiming they “do permanent, irrevocable harm” to the justice system. He described the indictment as “just the next chapter in a book of lies” to frame Trump and anyone else “willing to take on the ruling regime”.

He added: “The real criminals here are the people who have brought this case forward both directly and indirectly.”

Trump is also facing criminal charges for a separate federal investigation into efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 election, a classified documents investigation and a New York hush money case.

Donald Trump has reacted to his latest

A Georgia grand jury on Monday indicted former President Donald J. Trump and his key allies for attempting to to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential win in the state.

It is the former president’s fourth criminal indictment this year.

In addition to Trump, the indictment brings charges against his personal lawyer Rudolph Giuliani, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, lawyer Sidney Powell and a dozen others.

The defendants “knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump,” prosecutors wrote in the 41-count criminal indictment. They have until Friday to turn themselves in voluntarily.

Read the full indictment here.

For months prosecutors in Georgia have investigated whether Trump broke the law by, among other acts, privately pressuring Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to state that he had found enough votes for Trump to carry Georgia. Raffensperger, a Republican, refused Trump’s request.

As expected, the defendants were charged under a racketeering statute, used to target individuals who conspire in a corrupt organization. The indictment describes a “criminal enterprise” that operated in Georgia and a number of other states to overturn the outcome of the election. Other alleged crimes including making false statements, impersonating a public officer, forgery and soliciting public law officers to violate their oaths.

“The defendant engaged in a criminal racketeering enterprise to overturn Georgia’s presidential election results,” Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said at a press conference Monday evening.

When asked if the indictments were politically motivated, Willis said: “I make decision in this office based on the facts and the law.”

Before the indictment was released, Trump attorneys Drew Findling and Jennifer Little questioned the validity of the grand jury process.

“Fulton County District Attorney’s Office has once again shown that they have no respect for the integrity of the grand jury process,” attorneys Drew Findling and Jennifer Little said in a statement issued by the Trump campaign.

Meanwhile, the Trump Campaign called the indictments “bogus.”

“Ripping a page from Crooked Joe Biden’s playbook, Willis has strategically stalled her investigation to try and maximally interfere with the 2024 presidential race and damage the dominant Trump campaign,” the campaign said in a statement on Truth Social. “All of these corrupt Democrat attempts will fail.”

Among Trump’s other legal woes:

The former president pled not guilty in Federal Court in Washington, D.C., on August 3 to criminal charges alleging that Trump conspired to overturn his 2020 presidential defeat with false claims that the race was “stolen.”

The federal counts against Trump include conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding; and conspiracy against rights.

On June 13, Trump was arrested and released in Miami, Florida, after being charged with 37 counts related to the alleged mishandling of more than 100 classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate containing national security secrets. He pleaded not guilty to the Espionage Act charges, including conspiracy to obstruct justice and willful retention of defense records.

In March, a Manhattan grand jury indicted Trump for allegedly falsifying business records to cover up an alleged “hush money payment” to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The former president has pled not guilty to those charges.

On Aug. 7, a federal judge in New York upheld a $5 million jury verdict that found Trump guilty of sexually abusing and defaming Elle magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll, who claimed Trump raped her in a New York department store dressing room in 1996.

The stars came out for Ed Sheeran’s SiriusXM show in Amagansett, New York, on Monday night.

Paul McCartney, Stella McCartney, Billy Joel, Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, John Mayer, Howard Stern, Jon Bon Jovi, James Corden, Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Gwyneth Paltrow, Andy Cohen, Anjelica Huston, Michael J. Fox, Brooke Shields, Christie Brinkley, Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy were among those who turned up for the intimate show at live music venue Stephen Talkhouse on Main Street, per a The Hollywood Reporter source in attendance.

Sheeran kicked off an hourlong set at 7 p.m., taking the stage inside a tented structure outside the popular venue following an introduction from SiriusXM’s president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein. The company announced the gig less than a month ago, billing it as an exclusive concert for SiriusXM subscribers and fans.

“We couldn’t be more excited that Ed Sheeran, one of the top artists in the world, will step away from his tour playing stadiums to present an intimate show for SiriusXM at Stephen Talkhouse, a truly iconic venue,” said Greenstein in a July 20 press release touting the show. “This will be a one-of-a-kind experience for the lucky fans in attendance and to our listeners nationwide.”

Brandi Carlile, Coldplay, Dave Matthews, The Killers and Mumford & Sons have previously headlined the show. For his outing, Sheeran delivered a setlist that included “Thinking Out Loud,” “Shape of You,” “Castle on the Hill,” “Don’t,” “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You,” “Bad Habits” and select tracks of his new album Subtract including “Eyes Closed.”

Judging by the action in the VIP section, the crowd loved it as McCartney was seen jamming out while Corden was spotted singing along to Sheeran’s hit songs. Also of note: Guests noshed on slices of pizza provided by new celeb-friendly Fini Pizza. The pizzeria, located on Main Street, took over the former space occupied by Astro’s Pizza earlier this summer and has quickly become a foodie destination, frequented by the likes of Jessica Seinfeld.

In closing, Sheeran thanked Stephen Talkhouse for hosting and all the attendees for coming out. “Thank you to Sirius XM and everyone there for always playing my tunes and always supporting me from the very, very beginning.”

The concert will air on SiriusXM’s The Ed Sheeran Channel on Aug. 16 and will re-air throughout the week. The Sheeran channel launches Aug. 15 and runs through Aug. 21 on the SXM App and on channel 104. SiriusXM Hits 1 will stream the show on Sept. 1, and it will also become available on the SXM App.

The pop superstar leads the midweek chart with “Dance The Night” (via Warner Records), one of several hits from Barbie.

If it swings to the top, up 3-1, “Dance The Night” would be Lipa’s fourth U.K. leader, following “New Rules”; “One Kiss “with Calvin Harris; and “Cold Heart,” her collaboration with Elton John, remixed by PNAU.

Barbie has now passed the US$1 billion milestone at the global box office, and the hit film’s influence can been seen up and down the U.K.’s chart blast. Indeed, it’s an all-Barbie top two, as Billie Eilish’s ballad “What Was I Made For?” slots into second place, less than 1,000 chart units behind “Dance The Night,” the Official Charts Company reports. Other cuts from Barbie: The Album making a midweek mark include “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua (at No. 7); “Speed Drive” by Charli XCX (No. 14); “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling (No. 16); and Lizzo’s “Pink” (No. 34).

Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” (Geffen) completes the midweek podium, at No. 3, while the Grammy-winning pop star is poised to nab the top new entry on the national survey with “Bad Idea Right,” the latest track lifted from her forthcoming sophomore album GUTS. It’s new at No. 5 on the Official Chart Update.

Also set to make a dent on the chart is Fred Again’s “I Adore U” (Atlantic). It’s set to bow at No. 11, for what would be a career-high from the smoking hot Mercury Prize-nominated DJ and producer.

It would appear that Dave and Central Cee’s “Sprinter” (Live Yours/Neighbourhood) has run its final race. The hit song led the national chart for 10 consecutive weeks, but is set to tumble not just from summit, but out of the top 10. Based on sales and streaming data published by the OCC, “Sprinter” will drop to No. 12.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Singles Chart is published Friday, Aug. 18.

Austin Butler and Kaia Gerber were spotted on a double date with Karlie Koss and Joshua Kushner in Malibu, California.

The models and their beaus went to Nobu in Malibu, California, on Sunday, August 13. Gerber, 21, wore a navy blazer over a blue dress with green velvet ballet flats while her pal Kloss, 31, wore a green blazer over blue jeans with black sandals. The guys kept it casual with Butler, 31, donning an all-white ensemble with a navy trucker hat and Kushner, 38, sporting all black.

While out and about, the guys were spotted smiling as they greeted each other, while Kloss and Gerber looked caught up in conversation. The women have been friends for years, with Kloss offering advice to Gerber early in her modeling career.

“I’ve always looked up to Karlie Kloss just for how graceful she’s remained,” Gerber told Elle UK in May 2018. “She started modeling when she was even younger than my mom [Cindy Crawford], so when I was starting out she had the best advice for me. She was always so nice to me so I’ve always looked up to her.”

The two have only grown closer in the years since. In 2020, they went into business together as two of several investors in W Media and bought W Magazine with Bustle Media Group.

Kloss, for her part, wrote a gushing tribute to Gerber for her 21st birthday in September 2022. “@kaiagerber, i am deeply grateful to have you in my life,” Kloss captioned several snaps via Instagram of her and Gerber at Burning Man in Nevada. “So proud of the kind + brilliant woman you are. you’ve accomplished so much and life is only just beginning! cheers to you on this milestone, cannot wait to see all that is in store for you. love you baby sis.”

The double date night comes days after Kloss and Kushner were spotted on another fun outing — a Taylor Swift concert. Fans spotted the duo (who tied the knot in 2018) at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles during The Eras Tour on August 9. Butler and Gerber, for their parts, attended the show one night prior.

Gerber and Butler — who were first linked as a couple in 2021 — are used to going on dates with supermodels and their husbands. They’re often seen out and about with Kaia’s parents, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber. (Crawford, 57, and Rande, 61, also share son Presley Gerber, 24.) They even vacationed together in December 2022, with Butler joining the family on their holiday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

While the twosome jetset across the globe, Butler is doing his best to keep their romance private. “I don’t think there’s anything I want to share about that. But thank you for providing the space,” the Oscar nominee told GQ in an interview published in May.

In his first public comment since being kicked off “Big Brother” for using the n-word, Luke Valentine neither apologized nor acknowledged the matter.

Instead, in a short video posted on his Twitter (X) account, Valentine presented a defiantly chipper face as he offered up a substance-free affirmation to his followers.

“Hey, guys, just letting you know I’m alive, I’ve arrived, and you gotta keep the flames stoked. Until next time. We can’t burn out, no, no, no. the fires of love will continue to burn, baby,” Valentine said in a clip recorded while he was walking in an unidentified outdoor location.

“So thank you for all the memes, thank you for the support, all the kind words. And uh, now we’re just waiting on Duke.”

It’s not clear what “Duke” refers to.

Valentine was dropped from the show’s 25th season after he used the N-word in a conversation that was streamed on the Paramount+ live feeds. It was the first time in the show’s history that a contestant was booted for something they said on the live feed.

“Luke violated the ‘Big Brother’ code of conduct and there is zero tolerance in the house for using a racial slur. He has been removed from the house. His departure will be addressed in Thursday night’s show,” a spokesperson for CBS and the show’s producers told TheWrap after he was removed.

With Valentine’s exit, the remaining houseguests included “Survivor” alum Cirie Fields, America Lopez, Blue Kim, Bowie Jane, Cameron Hardin, Cory Wurtenberger, Felicia Cannon, Hisam Goueli, Izzy Gleicher, Jag Bains, Jared Fields, Kirsten Elwin, Matt Klotz, Mecole Hayes, Red Utley and Reilly Smedley.

Hillary Clinton was booked as a guest on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” well in advance of her appearance on Monday night’s episode. So it was just a grimly ironic coincidence that she happened to be on just moments after Donald Trump was indicted for the 4th time.

Naturally, Trump’s latest criminal charges took precedence over any other topic and Maddow had to start the interview by asking his 2016 presidential race opponent her feelings about the indictment.

“Do you feel satisfaction in that?” Maddow asked. “You warned that the country, essentially, that he was going to try to end democracy, but the most of the country didn’t believe you.”

“Well, it’s hard to believe. I don’t feel any satisfaction,” Clinton replied, adding that she feels,” just great profound sadness, that we have a former president who has been indicted for so many charges that went right to the heart [of] whether or not our democracy would survive.”

Watch the clip here:

A Georgia grand jury said in the 41-count indictment that Trump and 18 of his key associates — including Rudy Giuliani — “knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump.”

They are accused of a range of crimes, including the literal hacking of voting systems in the state. Read the full indictment here.

At the time Clinton spoke to Maddow, the charges had not yet been made public, but the former Secretary of State and First Lady noted that, “if you stop and think about what the public evidence is… he set out to defraud the United States of America and the citizens of our nation. He used tactics, harassment, intimidation, he made threats, he and his allies went after state officials, local officials responsible for conducting elections.”

“I don’t know that anybody should be satisfied this,” Clinton continued. “This is a terrible moment for our country to have. A former president accused of these terribly important crimes. The only satisfaction may be that the system is working, that all of the efforts by Donald Trump, his allies and his enablers to try to silence the truth, to try to undermine democracy, have been brought into the light and justice is being pursued.”

Queen Bey showed the “Special” singer love during her Renaissance concert on Monday night

Beyoncé had a message for Lizzo while onstage at her Renaissance concert in Atlanta on Monday.

During her performance of “Break My Soul (The Queens Remix),” when Bey highlights the names of iconic Black female artists in music, Beyoncé shouted, “Lizzo! I love you, Lizzo!”

Lizzo previously attended a Renaissance show in June and shared the moment Beyoncé displayed her name over the crowd. “I think of what we all mean to people and how cyclical it is. We are all so infinitesimally and maximally connected and significant. It’s an honor,” Lizzo wrote in her Instagram post.

The recent name drop in Atlanta follows a lawsuit filed against Lizzo by three of her former dancers accusing her of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment stemming from incidents that allegedly took place beginning in 2021 and through 2023. In the lawsuit obtained by Rolling Stone, the dancers claimed that Lizzo, who has emphasized body positivity throughout her career, brought up one of the dancer’s weight gain. The dancer claims she was then berated and fired after she recorded a meeting due to a health condition, per the suit.

“The stunning nature of how Lizzo and her management team treated their performers seems to go against everything Lizzo stands for publicly, while privately she weight-shames her dancers and demeans them in ways that are not only illegal but absolutely demoralizing,” the plaintiffs’ attorney, Ron Zambrano, said in a statement.

Trending

Lizzo has denied the allegations, writing on Instagram earlier this month that her “work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized.” She continued, “Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed.”

“These sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional,” Lizzo wrote in her statement.

A Fulton County grand jury has indicted Donald Trump and several allies on Monday over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, AP reports. This is the fourth criminal case to be brought against the former president.

The grand jury charged Trump with felony racketeering and several conspiracy charges related to the ongoing investigation into his attempt to subvert the 2020 election results.

Fulton County district attorney Fanis Willis kicked off the investigation after a leaked phone call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffesnperger. In the alleged call, Trump asked officials to “find” votes in order for him to win the race in the state.

The indictment is the former president’s fourth this year, following three separate investigations led by special counsel Jack Smith. Meanwhile, Trump continues his 2024 presidential campaign, where he’s currently leading in the polls against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.

A New York grand jury first indicted Trump in March over a hush money scheme with adult film star Stormy Daniels, organized before the 2016 election. He was charged with 34 felony counts, to which he pled not guilty; a criminal trial looms in 2024.

His second criminal indictment came following an investigation into confidential documents that the former president took with him to his Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, after leaving office in 2020. Trump was indicted on seven counts, including violating the Espionage Act by willfully retaining national defense secrets, conspiracy to obstruct justice and making false statements. It served as the first time a former U.S. president had faced federal charges, to which he pleaded not guilty.

He was most recently indicted on charges relating to his alleged involvement with the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. The four counts were related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government, conspiracy to obstruct a congressional proceeding and conspiracy to violate rights.

Outside of the already-established Loki, there is perhaps no Marvel Disney+ series as highly anticipated as Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

The WandaVision spin-off will focus on Katheryn Hahn’s Agatha, who was revealed to be the main antagonist, and mastermind behind the manipulation of Wanda during the initial Disney+ series.

Aubrey Plaza Joins The MCU

Joining Katheryn Hahn in the new series will be Aubrey Plaza who will be making her MCU debut.

Plaza has been publicly effusive in her praise of Coven of Chaos, calling it “the most elevated Marvel material that’s out there”.

“‘Coven of Chaos’ was so fun. I wanted very much to work with Kathryn Hahn, I think she’s so great. And without saying anything really, I had a blast. I loved my character in that as well, and I think it’s the most elevated Marvel material that’s out there. So, it was cool to jump into that world with those people specifically,” she said.

While Plaza’s involvement in Coven of Chaos has been well known, the role she would play has been kept under wraps.

The actress’s assertion that she has a “really pivotal role” in the series has led many to speculate the could portray opposite Hahn as the show’s main antagonist.

An Original Character

According to Mashable, Plaza will be playing an original character named Rio Vadal.

While Plaza’s character may have been created specifically for the series, that doesn’t mean that she won’t have comic book counterparts.

One popular theory has Plaza’s character as a stand-in for the Green Witch. The MCU has already seen the introduction of the Violet Witch (Agatha) and the Scarlet Witch (Wanda) so introducing the other rainbow magic users could make sense.

For now, fans can only speculate.

With the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 earlier this month, the age-old debate of save-scumming has been fully ignited, with Starfield players already weighing in on their plans. While the act of save scumming, repeatedly reloading to ensure a preferable result, can be controversial, it seems that the Starfield community is leaning towards a failure is better type of playthrough.

A post by Reddit user u/sad_eggy asks, “Will you be save-scumming or leaning into trial and failure, and why?”.

The top-rated comment says, “First playthrough will probably just be trial and failure. No save scumming, test room, or console commands. I will attempt anyways lol”, suggesting that the general sentiment leans towards making mistakes and living with consequences. One reply goes into more detail. “First playthrough always 100% vanilla and if I chose a wrong answer or something then I have to live with it. The next playthroughs can be modded to death lol.”

Image via Bethesda

Some users did point out the benefit of using saves to escape game-breaking situations, such as getting stuck between walls or other bugs. This also included adding mods to the game if things needed fixing quicker than Bethesda could patch them. “I will add a mod if there’s something horribly buggy (looking at you, Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch). But otherwise, I agree 100%. First playthrough should be completely vanilla.”

One comment on the post suggested that save scumming is the same as having extra lives or a checkpoint to revert to if something goes wrong, but one user provided a much deeper idea. “True… but if you get caught stealing — did something go ‘wrong’ to the point that you should reload a save — or should you simply deal with the consequence of prison or being attacked? I think it just depends on how pure you want to be in your play-through. I personally go back and forth all throughout.”

I am in the camp of enjoying failure and making the wrong choice. Still, if I feel cheated by something the game does or simply my misunderstanding of a mechanic,  or dialogue choice, I will happily reload to get a second chance. What are your save-related plans for Strafield?

With the release of Baldur’s Gate 3

It is no secret that technology now advances rapidly and dramatically, constantly changing the pace at which we’re able to process our surroundings, perspective, and experiences—as well as the way we reflect those experiences back at others. After nearly a century of being an elite, expensive pursuit, tech has made filmmaking an accessible medium for everyone. And during this year’s Global Media Makers LA Residency, five international filmmakers had the opportunity to explore the city through short films made in the annual iPhone Collaborative Workshop—using nothing but an iPhone 14 and their own unique POVs.

Global Media Makes (GMM) is, of course, a cultural exchange program, supported through a partnership between Film Independent and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This year, GMM welcomed a diverse group of filmmakers from 15 countries in Asia and Africa. For many, it was their first time in LA and the United States.

Five filmmakers from Bangladesh, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya and Nepal were selected to participate in the iPhone Collaborative Workshop, building community with one another while being paired with creative producers based in Los Angeles, who guided them through the exploration of the city and the filmmaking process, from development to post-production.

2023 GMM Fellows and iPhone Collaborative Workshop Fellows ( From L-R) Rajeela Shrestha (Nepal), Asmaa Gamal (Egypt), Abdullah Al-Ghaly (Libya), Mahde Hasan (Bangladesh) and Estéphan Khattar (Lebanon)

“It’s very rewarding to see our Global Media Makers connect with our Los Angeles Fellows to discover LA through a creative dialogue as expressed in these poignant 60-second films,” said María Raquel Bozzi, Film Independent’s Senior Director of Education & International Initiatives. “An iPhone, with its high-quality capture, ease of use and cinematic workflow capabilities, is the perfect tool for freely exploring the visual richness of our dynamic Angeleno community.”

The workshop culminated in a screening and talkback session inside the Film Independent screening room, which I (your author) had the honor of moderating. As one of the creative producers involved in this year’s workshop, it was amazing to see the filmmakers’ initial ideas come to life and blossom on the screen. Each was fascinatingly unique, showcasing the artists’ viewpoint and interpretation of our City of Angels. Check them out below…

About: Mahde Hasan is a screenwriter and director based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. For the workshop, he chose to center an actress as the focus of his piece, keeping the identity of star (Elif Sözen, a fellow Global Media Maker from Turkey) a secret until the final screening. Hasan’s French New Wave influences come through beautifully in the final portrait, which takes the audience on a winding journey through many iconic Los Angeles sites and landmarks—an impressive itinerary given Hasan’s relatively short time in the city.

About: Rajeela Shrestha is a filmmaker who has been actively involved in Kathmandu’s film industry since 2014. She believes that visual storytelling is a powerful medium to make people understand the complexities of the world. During the development process, Shrestha spoke often about how grateful she was to be surrounded by the other female filmmakers in her cohort. The resulting film is a colorful and vibrant exploration of LA, mixed with joyful footage of the many diverse women in GMM 2023. At the Q&A, the filmmaker spoke emotionally of her gratitude and how she’ll never forget this time surrounded by her new “sisters” in Hollywood.

About: Asmaa Gamal is an independent photographer and director with a Master’s degree in Drama and Television. At the beginning of the workshop, Gamal spoke about the laws in Egypt forbidding street art and how she loved looking at murals all around Los Angeles. For her, this was a privilege to have such public displays of art that are encouraged. She even connected with an Egyptian artist living in LA, who’d left his home country to pursue his passion for art. He was later featured in the film and was able to attend the final screening.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN LA

Logline: A friendly, glamorous city with dazzling billboards, where the manifestation of richness and poverty, luxury cars and the unhoused coexist.

Director: Abdullah Al-Ghaly, 2023 GMM Fellow, Screenwriting Track

Creative Producer: Imani Davis Project Involve 2023 Programming Track

At the screening, Imani moderated a Q&A after each film. Here she is with her own Director, Abdullah Al-Ghaly

About: Abdullah Al-Ghaly is a Libyan writer, director and editor. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, he studied filmmaking and animation at Cairo Cinema Institute. Al-Ghaly had a strong vision for the short since the beginning of the workshop, knowing he wanted to show the stark wealth disparity on display in downtown LA. He also wanted to cut to heavy metal music, a genre of music he often turns to for creative inspiration. At the screening, he spoke extensively about the differences between the places he’s lived and LA, his surprise at the number of unhoused people on the street and the city’s prevalence of gaudy real estate properties.

The Fellows’ time in Los Angeles was short, but the impact was evident onscreen and in the room, as the shorts’ creators swelled with pride for the beautiful work that was made. The filmmakers are all back home now, but hopefully still reflecting on their time in La La Land.

In what marks the most ambitious film from Peru’s leading producer Tondero and, most likely, Peruvian cinema in recent times, Pedro Almodóvar’s El Deseo, Infinity Hill (“Argentina 1985”) and Tondero have joined forces to co-produce a drama based on the hostage crisis that took place at the Japanese embassy in Lima in 1996.

El Deseo executive producer Esther Garcia and Infinity Hill co-founder/chief creative officer Axel Kuschevatzky were in Lima to attend Tondero’s 15th anniversary festivities and for Garcia to receive a tribute from the ongoing 27th Lima Film Festival, which runs Aug. 10-18.

The still-untitled project has been co-written by Spain’s Alicia Luna and Peru’s Santiago Roncagliolio, Patricia Romero and Lima Film Fest artistic director Josué Mendez who together spent some four years delving into the facts behind the crisis that drew massive international attention at the time.

The incident spawned several works in literature and film. Author Ann Patchett’s lauded “Bel Canto” is roughly based on the incident and Paul Weitz’s film adaptation of the book, starring Julianne Moore and Ken Watanabe, came out in 2018. Netflix streams Peruvian documentary “Rehenes.”

“We’re focusing on what really happened at the embassy,” said Kuschevatzky who has co-produced three acclaimed films with El Deseo: “Wild Tales,” “El Clan” and “El Angel,” the last two also fact-based.

Garcia said: “Ever since Javier Camara introduced me to Miguel eight years ago, we’ve been looking for something to make together. We’d been developing several projects together but this one seemed the most viable.” “It features an international set of players, which makes it easy to cast,” she added. “It was a matter of getting our planets aligned,” Kuschevatzky concurred.

The crisis begun when members of the rebel group Túpac Amaru infiltrated the Japanese embassy in Peru and took some 800 people hostage, among them diplomats, government officials, businessmen, and high-ranking military officials, who were gathered there for a social event.

“This multi-layered story is seen from the points of view of three key characters,” said Valladares.

“Aside from touching on the socio-political aspect of the story, we’ll be honing in on the personal stories and the relationships that formed among the hostages, the staff, and the rebels,” noted Garcia who praised Valladares for being one of the few producers in Peru who, despite his youth, has achieved great local box office success with his movies and continues to seek out international alliances.

Valladares, who made his first film at 19, is now 39. “In a country mostly devoid of public funding, he found ways to make films in Peru,” said Kuschevatzky who also praised Garcia for her producing cred. “When faced with situations at work, I always ask myself, what would Esther do?” he mused.

Tondero recently opened a Colombian outpost with partners with whom it is developing two projects to date: “Un lugar para Ramon,” directed by Peru’s Salvador del Solar and starring Colombian actor Juan Pablo Urrego (Fernando Trueba’s “Memories of My Father”) and Valladares’ directorial debut, the teen romance “Locos de amor: mi primer amor.”

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Sad Puppy-Seeing Soccer Himbo Seeks Refugee Son

For lovers of soccer and movies about hot guys being dumb, it’s been the highest of highs and the lowest of lows lately.

“Barbie” became a bona fide cultural phenomenon by giving us something we never knew we needed: Ryan Gosling running around as a sexy Beach professional who does a shockingly decent Rob Thomas impression despite having nothing going on behind his eyes. The performance was a reminder that men are just as capable of playing the ditzy sidekick as women are — and instantly took its place alongside Brad Pitt in “Burn After Reading” in the pantheon of great himbo cinema.

“This is so rad,” you might have said to yourself as a himbo/soccer fan walking out of your Barbenheimer double feature. “With the high I’m riding right now, it feels like there’s no way anything bad could possibly happen to anyone for the rest of this summer.”

Unfortunately, the FIFA Women’s World Cup didn’t quite go the way fans of the U.S. Women’s National Team were hoping it would. Despite a stacked roster that brought back several of the biggest stars from the unprecedented run we’ve enjoyed over the past decade, the team was eliminated in the Round of 16 after a depressing tie with Sweden. (Elimination after a 0-0 tie… what a sport!)

If you still have the soccer bug but need a fun movie to drown your sorrows (and can’t bear the shame of your local theater staff seeing you at another “Barbie” screening), look no further than “Diamantino.” The Portuguese soccer comedy from Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt was a hit on the festival circuit in 2018 — as any movie that combined soccer, giant puppies, romances that come really close to being incest without being incest, inadvertently racist sword-and-sandal commercials, and identical twin femme fatales inevitably would.

“Diamantino” is an unclassifiable comic fantasy told through the eyes of its eponymous hero: a world-renowned footballer as dumb as he is handsome. After missing a disastrous goal in the World Cup, the titular Diamantino tries to find new meaning in life by adopting a refugee child. What he doesn’t realize is that he’s being used as a pawn by virtually everyone in his life (and several people not in his life) — including his grifting sisters, his new son, and a radical nationalist fringe group trying to turn him into a MAGA-style leader without his knowledge. Fun stuff!

I’ll shut up now, because “Diamantino” is the kind of movie you want to know as little as possible about before you start watching — and believe it or not, I really didn’t get to much of the weird stuff. I just hope the film reminds everyone that himbos truly are the backbone of our society — no matter who you support in the World Cup. —CZ

The Aftermath: And the Hot Pansexuals Lived Happily Ever After

Last Sunday, I woke up in the middle of the night. Bleary-eyed, I rolled over in bed, silenced my alarm, scrolled through dozens of Whatsapp messages, and came to a brutal conclusion: I am simply not gay enough to watch the World Cup at 2 a.m.

For this reason, I can’t say I needed much comfort in the wake of the aforementioned U.S. Women’s loss. (They can….simply play again next year, no?) But I am enough of a cinephile to say with confidence that I’d watch the world-class queer “Diamantino” at any conceivable hour or level of discomfort. Smack me in the jaw and stick a sword through my spinal cord: I will make a rewatch of the fluffy puppy, adopted “fugee,” pansexual romance, propaganda crime thriller work for me.

Caught somewhere between “She’s the Man,” “Titane,” “The Fly,” “Body Snatchers,” and “Benedetta,” this 2018 Cannes hit was entirely unknown to me before this week — but may very well be the first men’s sports movie I have genuinely enjoyed. Maybe it was the celestial oases blooming from the center of that Russian soccer stadium. Maybe it was the cutting satire of the European Union’s ongoing identity crisis juxtaposed with all those powdery-pink doggos. Maybe it was not being asked to take a man named “Rudy” or his “feelings” about “Notre Dame” seriously. Whatever it was, Tino had me rooting for him (and Mittens!) every step of the way.

There’s a heartbreaking, Zac Efron’s “Down to Earth”-esque sweetness in seeing this sexy soccer idiot become so overwhelmed by the suffering of a refugee mother that he throws the World Cup. Tino’s empathy could come across as savior-like or saccharine, but his privileged stupidity is well and quickly cut by the torments of his vile, matchy-matchy sisters and the surveillance agent lesbians taking advantage of his downfall. Toss in the (very hot!) Dr. Lamborghini and her clone-spiracy with the Minister (also hot!), and it’s easy to find yourself handwaving any resentment you could feel towards a man who tucks his adopted child into bedsheets bearing his own face.

Exiting a midnight screening of “Diamantino,” I imagine you’d hear two debates with some frequency. First, what “are” the puppies? To Tino, I imagine he sees them as extensions of the safe, good feelings he gets from playing soccer when he’s truly enjoying it. They’re kind of a four-legged visual take on the “Ted Lasso” “Football is life!” catchphrase that I think Tino knows he doesn’t really see, but that conceptually frames how he feels when he’s “in flow” during a game. To the audience, I interpret them as being representative of the safety Tino found in soccer: an all-consuming activity that ironically doubled as a space away from masculine pressures but came crumbling down when he lost that game. When Tino says goodbye to the puppies at the end of the movie, he’s really saying he’s found safety in living his life authentically with Aisha and without soccer.

And therein lies the second debate I think you’d hear: how should we feel about the former soccer superstar and his brand-new boobies running away with someone else’s girlfriend? To this I say, two things. First, if you play stupid games, then you win stupid prizes; don’t let your girlfriend pretend to be an orphan boy named Rahim, have her move in with a beefed-up millionaire, and then be surprised if she goes all Twelfth Night on your ass. Second, to quote Tino’s late dad, “Love has reason that even reason cannot understand.” Reader, go back and rewatch the Donna Lewis “I Love You Always Forever” sequence knowing Diamant-isha is imminent. I’m telling you, the Nutella waffles and Bongo Juice just hit different when you know they end up fucking. What a winner. —AF

Those brave enough to join in on the fun can stream “Diamantino” on Prime Video or rent it on Apple TV. IndieWire After Dark publishes midnight movie recommendations at 11:59pm ET every Friday. Read more of our deranged suggestions…

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length

The Indian mega-merger between Sony’s TV operations in India and Zee Entertainment has been given the greenlight, paving the way for a $10B TV partnership.

According to Reuters, people present at a regulatory hearing said on Thursday a key approval had been given. Zee’s shares were up 10% after the National Company Law Tribunal cleared the deal.

The mega-merger will create an Indian media giant, with the bringing together of the two companies’ linear TV networks, digital assets, production operations and program libraries. Sony will provide a large cash injection and control a majority share stake of close to 51%.

The merger has been in the offing for two years but has hit several regulatory roadblocks. It triggered  worries after the Securities and Exchange Board of India banned Zee bosses Subhash Chandra and Punit Goenka from the boardrooms of listed companies for a year.

Sony said recently it was taking the interim regulatory order very seriously but planned to push on with the merger. These roadblocks appear now to have officially been cleared.

We’re an Anglo-American musical group called SQUARE HALO and we’re keen to get songs from our Lyme disease awareness album ‘The Lyme Years’ featured in independent films.  We have original, evocative, catchy, high-quality songs for sync licensing and we’re happy to waive the licence fee too!

Exclusively for Raindance, here are our favourite Bond Themes.

Singer-songwriter Demetrios Loukas of SQUARE HALO: His top James Bond theme song:

My personal top 3 James Bond theme songs are: ‘Licence to Kill‘ by Gladys Knight, ‘For Your Eyes Only‘ by Sheena Easton and ‘A View to a Kill‘ by Duran Duran. If I had to choose just one, it would have to be ‘Licence to Kill‘.

The song ‘Licence to Kill‘ was written by Narada Michael Walden, Jeffrey Cohen and Walter Afanasieff but it was actually adapted from another very famous James Bond theme song called ‘Goldfinger‘ which was written by John Barry, Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, and performed by Welsh singer Dame Shirley Bassey.

Walden: ‘Yes, we took that line and just built around it, yes, the James Bond famous horn line and incorporated it in our song, and we had to pay the writers a handsome share for it.‘

Of Gladys Knight‘s vocal performance and in particular, the opening line of the song ‘I need, I need, I gotta hold onto your love‘, Walden had this to say: ‘that was all her, all that coming together was like wow, something’s about to explode!‘.

For decades, I had no idea Walden and Afanasieff were behind this production but their involvement with two of my all-time favourite artists explains why I like it so much. Walden produced many of Whitney Houston‘s hit songs (including ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)‘, ‘All The Man That I Need‘, ‘So Emotional‘, ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go‘, ‘I’m Every Woman‘ and ‘One Moment in Time‘) and likewise, Afanasieff co-wrote and produced Mariah Carey‘s most famous songs (‘All I Want For Christmas Is You‘, ‘Anytime You Need A Friend’, ‘Can’t Let Go‘ and ‘Hero‘).

Soul diva Gladys Knight, a devout Christian, was uncomfortable with a song called ‘Licence to Kill‘ and was nervous she’d be associated with promoting violence.

Walden explains how he got Gladys to relate to the lyrics:

‘How do you take ‘Licence to Kill‘ and make it warm and fuzzy? And the only way I could think was I will hurt you, if you hurt my man, someone I love, and I think she kinda got behind that.‘

Composer, arranger and producer Treyvonce Ambers-Moore of SQUARE HALO: His top James Bond theme song:

The James Bond theme songs are all produced to such great quality that picking a favourite is honestly very challenging but If i were forced to choose, it would have to be between the three themes: ‘Diamonds are Forever‘, ‘Skyfall‘ and ‘No Time To Die‘ BUT before I go on, I must admit that I embarrassingly have never actually watched any of the previous James Bond Films except for the most recent film ‘No Time To Die‘, so it sounds a bit unfair to say ‘No Time To Die‘ is my favourite being that I haven’t experienced the visual combination with the themes.

But I’m a BIG fan of Billie Eilish‘s airy ghostly tone on the theme. I remember feeling completely encapsulated with warmth and mystery while watching the film.

‘Diamonds are Forever‘ would have to be the runner up because it gives such a classy and luxurious aesthetic all the while bringing a spacious sonic feeling. I must also point out that I heard this song years ago and I had no idea it was even part of a movie. I simply liked the smooth tone of the record. Strangely, though the song was released in 1971, I could very much see this theme being used in many TV shows and movies today.

What has also given this theme even more spotlight and recognition for me personally is Kanye West‘s remix that samples the theme in his song ‘Diamonds From Sierra Leone‘. As funny as it may sound, I was first introduced to the lyrics through Kanye West‘s version. This may be due to the fact that Kanye is just someone I heard a lot while growing up. Regardless, this is just an example of how James Bond theme music transcends generations!

Composer and co-writer Omar Shelesh of SQUARE HALO: His top James Bond theme song:

I’ve always been a fan of the 1970s Roger Moore-era Bond movies, and I’ve come to realize that it’s the theme music that forms a big part of that appeal. My top choices include the theme song Live and Let Die, from the 1973 film of the same name, which is widely regarded as one of the most iconic and memorable opening themes for a Bond movie. Written and performed by Paul and Linda McCartney, with George Martin in charge of production and orchestration, it was the first Bond theme to adopt a true rock and roll vibe.

Creatively, this was a wise move on the part of the producers, who wanted a fresh and exciting sound to accompany Roger Moore’s cinematic debut as 007. And this definitely shows in the music- with its combination of lyrical simplicity, powerful orchestration, seamless transitions between soft, melodic verses, and explosive, hard-hitting choruses, it is definitely written for impact.

Listen out for Martin’s instrumental arrangement of the song being used to great effect to underscore key scenes throughout the movie, such as the climax to the dramatic boat chase sequence through the Louisiana Bayou.

My overall favourite, however, is the theme song Nobody Does It Better, from the 1977 movie The Spy Who Loved Me. When it comes to classic 70s-era Bond theme music, Carly Simon’s smooth but emotively stirring vocal performance, seamlessly coupled with music composed and arranged by Marvin Hamlisch, this song really lives up to its name.

Simon’s articulate and instinctive phrasing brings real life and depth to Carole Bayer Sager’s lyrics, conveying the complex sense of attraction, admiration, and competition between the spies of rival superpowers (slickly portrayed by Roger Moore and Barbara Bach). From an instrumental standpoint, this is one of Hamlisch’s more adventurous works, demonstrating his mastery at fashioning a fusion of 70’s soft rock and traditionally lush orchestration, culminating in a beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant, and enduring piece of music that perfectly captures the essence of the Bond franchise.

As with all Bond theme music, it’s best experienced when accompanied by the seductive visuals of Maurice Binder’s opening title sequence.

A dam in southern Norway partially burst on Wednesday following days of heavy rain that triggered landslides and flooding in the mountainous region and forced downstream communities to evacuate, officials said.

Flooding in Norway and neighbouring Sweden has carried away sheds, small houses and mobile homes, with officials warning that more is yet to come.

The extreme weather in Scandinavia has been in stark contrast to that seen in southern Europe, with the likes of Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Croatia all being ravaged by wildfires in recent days and weeks.

In Spain and Portugal, locals and holidaymakers are bracing for record temperatures with forecasters predicting highs of up to 44C in parts of the Iberian Peninsula as the region boils under its third heatwave of the summer.

The country’s weather service has warned that the average temperature nationwide could hit a 70-year high, with almost the whole country under red weather alerts.

The Norwegian dam at the Braskereidfoss hydroelectric power plant, on the Glåma, Norway’s longest and most voluminous river, burst on Wednesday after days of rain.

Authorities initially considered blowing up part of the dam, the idea being to prevent communities downstream from being inundated by using a limited, controlled blast to release pressure on the dam.

But that proposal was scrapped after water later broke through the structure, police spokesman Fredrik Thomson told reporters.

‘The damage from a possible explosion of the concrete plant would be so great that it would serve no purpose,’ Thompson said.

Now officials are hopeful that they will see a gradual, even leveling of the water, Thompson said.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre warned that flooding would continue to be a threat as excess water flows downstream. ‘This is by no means over,’ he said. ‘It could be the highest water level in 50 years or more.’

The dam’s generators stopped working early Wednesday after a power grid failure, plant operator Hafslund Eco said in a statement.

An automatic system that should have opened the floodgates to release water failed. Rapidly rising water then spilled over the dam and into the power station itself, which caused major damage, officials said.

Huge volumes of water were pouring over the western parts of the dam, Thomson said. The water ripped apart a two-lane road and fences that ran across the top of the dam, with pictures from the scene showing water flooding through.

Per Storm-Mathisen, a spokesman for the power station operator, told the Norwegian news agency NTB that the water diversion seemed to be ‘going well.’

At least 1,000 people live in communities close to the river in the area, and authorities said that all were evacuated before the dam began to fail.

Footage has shown wooden cabins floating down overflowing rivers, with one clip showing a mobile home crashing into a bridge on Norway’s Hemsilar river.

People were seen standing on the bridge as they watched caravans being swept away, crashing into the bridge and being crushed under the weight.

In other developments Wednesday, a Norwegian woman in her 70s died after falling into a stream the day before.

She managed to crawl up onto the bank, but because of the floods, it took rescue teams several hours to bring her to a hospital, police said.

More than 600 people were evacuated in a region north of Oslo, and police in southern Norway reported that the situation there was ‘unclear and chaotic.’

All main roads between Oslo and Trondheim, Norway’s third-largest city, were closed, according to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

‘We are in a crisis situation of national dimensions,’ Innlandet County Mayor Aud Hove said. ‘People are isolated in several local communities, and the emergency services risk not being able to reach people who need help.’

The weather system known as Storm Hans has battered parts of Scandinavia and the Baltics for several days, causing rivers to overflow, damaging roads and knocking down branches that injured people.

Scientists have not done the intricate data analysis needed to see how much, if any, human-caused climate change played a role in the flooding.

But they have long warned that, as the world warms, extreme storms will produce larger amounts of rain in bigger bursts.

One major reason is that the warmer the air is, the more water it can hold. Also, many scientists say changes in the jet stream – the atmospheric currents that propel weather systems – often lead to storms stalling over places and dumping more rain. Those changes could be connected to climate change.

Two hydrologists said the conflict between old dams and heavier amounts of rain is becoming a more frequent problem.

University of Virginia hydrologist Venkat Lakshmi said his research shows that older dams are unprepared to handle rainfall that comes in heavier, harder-to-manage bursts.

Many of those dams were designed to withstand floods that were supposed to happen only once a century, but those events are now happening much more often, he said.

‘This type of conflict between climate and our hydrological infrastructure, such as dams, is going to become more common,’ said UCLA hydrologist Park Williams.

‘As rainfall intensifies, reservoirs and dams ‘will be increasingly out of tune with the changing climate.’

Meanwhile, the flooding in southern Norway and central Sweden carried away sheds, small houses and mobile homes.

Norwegian meteorologists predicted that up to 1.2 inches of additional rain could fall by Wednesday evening, saying ‘the quantities are not extreme, but given the conditions in the area, the consequences may be.’

In neighbouring Sweden’s second-largest city, Goteborg, large parts of the harbor were under water. Weather agencies for both countries issued urgent warnings.

Erik Hojgard-Olsen, a meteorologist with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, told the Aftonbladet newspaper that the weather was unusual for this time of year.

‘It is exceptional to have such a low pressure (system) as Hans, which has brought so much rain for several days in a row,’ he said. ‘Especially for being a summer month, it has lasted a long time.’

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate said record high flood levels were recorded in several places in the Drammensvassdraget, a drainage basin west of Oslo, the capital.

Erik Holmqvist, a senior engineer at the agency, said four lakes. including the Randsfjorden, the fourth-largest in Norway, were particularly vulnerable to flooding.

‘We have to go all the way back to 1910 to get the same forecasts for the Randsfjorden,’ Holmqvist told the VG newspaper.

The Scandinavian countries were not the only European nations to be hit by floods.

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Slovenia and promised EU help to the small member state which was ravaged by recent floods that killed at least six people and caused extensive damage.

Slovenian officials have described last week’s floods as the worst natural disaster in the country’s 32-year history.

Two-thirds of the Alpine state’s territory was affected and the damage could reach billions of euros, according to officials.

Torrential rains caused rivers to overflow, flooding houses and fields, damaging bridges and roads, cutting off entire villages and leaving thousands without electricity and running water.

Von der Leyen said after meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob that they discussed a package of ‘three components’ designed to provide immediate financial aid but also mid and long-term support for reconstruction.

‘I am here today to let Slovenia and the Slovenian people know that Europe stands by your side,’ said von der Leyen, who visited a hard-hit village in northern Slovenia, by the border with Austria, to get a first-hand view of the devastation.

Von der Leyen said 100 million euros this year from the EU’s Solidarity Fund and 300 million euros in 2024 will be made accessible to Slovenia.

Additionally, it can draw from other funds or reprogram existing ones, she added.

In a stark contrast to the extreme weather in northern Europe, temperatures soared across Spain and Portugal on Wednesday as the two countries boil under their third heatwave of the summer.

As huge forest fires raged across southern Portugal for the fifth successive day, Spain’s weather service warned that the average temperature across the country could hit a seven-decade record.

‘This will probably be the hottest five August days in 73 years,’ said AEMET, the state meteorological agency, with almost the whole country under red weather alerts.

The highest temperatures occurred in Andalusia, according to data from AEMET shortly before 7 pm (1700 GMT).

In Roda de Andalucia, the mercury hit 44.6 degrees Celsius (112.3 Fahrenheit), and at the Granada airport where the temperature reached 44.1 Celsius.

‘The average temperature’ in Spain this Wednesday ‘will probably be a record since 1950’, Aemet added.

Winds and extreme heat are also driving fires that have devastated 37,000 acres of trees in neighbouring Portugal over the past few days.

The biggest blazes are in the southern Odemira region, where more than 1,500 people have been evacuated with the fires reaching the Algarve, a hugely popular tourist destination.

But firefighters tackling the wildfires said they were bringing them under control Wednesday, with a fall in temperatures and greater humidity at the coast helping stem the spread as hot air moves east.

Experts say the recurring heatwaves, which have been getting longer and more intense, are a consequence of climate change.

The Iberian Peninsula is bearing the brunt of climate change in Europe, with droughts and wildfires becoming more and more common.

Spanish firefighters used up to a dozen water bombers to slow the spread of the flames around Valencia de Alcantara in Extremadura close to the border with Portugal.

‘We evacuated our clients to a hotel in Alcantara,’ said Joaquin Dieguez, the owner of a holiday cottage. ‘But we are really worried because we have an enormous forest here with century-old oak trees. It’s awful.’

The most dangerous fire burning Friday, in Valencia de Alcantara in the southwest, was ‘stabilised’, the regional government reported.

First estimations suggest that 350 hectares of trees have gone up in smoke.

The blaze comes after 573 hectares were destroyed in wildfires in Portbou in Catalonia in the northeast, with 450 acres of trees lost by another fire near Bonares in Andalusia in the south.

Several countries in Europe have suffered wildfires in recent days and weeks.

A bushfire near the Croatian coastal town of Sibenik quickly spread on July 13, fuelled by strong southerly winds.

Another fire started on July 25 near the popular tourist city Dubrovnik. The situation was rapidly brought under control.

In Cyprus, a forest fire erupted on August 6 in the north of the city of Limassol and quickly spread through the semi-mountainous region, prompting the precautionary evacuation of three communities.

By morning the fires had largely been contained, but interchanging winds caused intermittent flare-ups.

Small-scale blazes have been recorded across France, including regions like Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, Grand Est, Bouches-Du-Rhone and Corsica island.

Mid-April the French geological service BRGM said that very low groundwater levels have put France on course for a worse summer drought than last year, mainly in the southern part of the country.

Swiss police on July 17 issued evacuation orders for several mountain villages due to the spread of a fire on the forested flank of a mountain in Bitsch in the Valais canton near the Italian border. More than 200 people were forced to evacuate.

It could take days or weeks to fully put out the fire, which spread to 100 hectares of forest, a firelighter said.

Switzerland also experienced a tornado last month, which ripped roofs off buildings and knocked over a construction crane.

In Greece, fires burning since mid-July on the island of Rhodes forced the evacuation of some 20,000 as an inferno reached coastal resorts on the island’s southeast.

A wildfire also forced evacuations from the island of Corfu in the night of July 25-26. In the capital city of Athens, a wildfire declared on July 17 spread through forests, about 30 km (18 miles) north.

The fire front extended for more than 8 km (5 miles), officials said.

Firefighters were able to control other fires in the southeast and west of Athens, but those areas were still at risk.

Italy’s health ministry on July 18 issued red weather alerts for 20 of the country’s 27 main cities, with expectations of the number rising to 23 by July 19.

The worker at Italian air force’s weather service, Carlo Spanu, said that the country could see temperatures exceeding 47 degrees Celsius.

Rome registered a new record high temperature of 41.8 Celsius, the weather service of the local Lazio region reported.

Fires across Russia’s vast forest wilderness have lead to emergency declarations in seven regions, according to Russia’s forestry service.

The worst-hit areas are the vast Yakutia region, with 111 fires covering 1,800 sq km, followed by the Khabarovsk, Amur and Krasnoyarsk regions.

Wildfires have also been scorching Siberian forests for a little over a month, fueled by intense heat and lightning storms. Authorities in the Russian Far East declared a state of emergency on July 3.

In Urals region’s Shaidurikha village, near Yekaterinburg, wildfires spread on July 12 and caused significant damage. One woman died, two people were hospitalised with burns and 41 houses were burned down.

Wildfires also started burning in Turkey’s southeastern Hatay and Mersin provinces, as well as Canakkale province in the northwest since July 16.

The video industry in Indonesia is set for rapid growth over the next five years as online services overtake conventional TV’s market share, according to new study.

Total video industry revenues (free TV, pay-TV and online video) are expected to grow at 8% compound average growth rate, according to a briefing by Singapore-based research firm Media Partners Asia. The researcher forecasts the market expanding from $2.5 billion in the current year to £3.7 billion in 2028. At the same time, TV’s share, including net advertising and subscriptions, is forecast to drop from 56$ in 2023 to 48% in 2028.

The shift to online is powered by a combination of user-generated-content, social video, and various forms of premium video-on-demand, including freemium and SVOD platforms.

The forecasts suggest that Indonesia, the region’s most populous and geographically scattered country, is finally delivering on its long-anticipated growth promises, with cellular and other digital modes driving usage and spending more effectively than broadband, satellite or over-the-air transmission.

Media Partners Asia forecasts that TV advertising will grow at 4.5% CAGR over the next five years to end 2028 with a 40% market share versus 35% in 2023.

“SCMA and MNC will remain market leaders in terms of monetization with SCMA a clear beneficiary from the shift to DTT. Linear-based pay-TV adoption will continue to decline. Pay-TV’s incremental growth remains anchored to bundles of home broadband and pay-TV offered by players such as Telkom Indonesia and Axiata-owned LinkNet,” said Media Partners Asia.

Online’s share of total video industry revenue will grow from 44% in 2023 to 52% by 2028. UGC and social video, especially YouTube and TikTok, lead monetization and the UGC category is expected to grow advertising at a 12% CAGR over the next 5 years, giving it a 26% share of total video industry revenues by 2028.

SVOD is expected to grow almost as fast, at 11% CAGR over the 2023-28 period, to grow market share in total video from 16% to 19%.

Premium ad-supported VOD (AVOD) is forecast grow at 16% CAGR, albeit from a low base, with its share of the total Indonesian video market rising from 5% to 7% over the 2023-28 period.

Indonesian content investment grew 13% in 2022 to $979 million, representing Southeast Asia’s largest video content market, according to the researcher.

Free-to-air remains the largest video content investment segment. But online video content (local entertainment and sports) investment is the fastest growing. Online content spending is being driven up as Netflix, Amazon and SCMA’s Vidio continue to invest. MPA projects that video industry content investment will grow 6% to just over US$1 billion in 2023.

“Indonesia’s advertising economy endured a poor first half of 2023. This will be partially offset by a stronger second half. TV is in the doldrums with annual ad declines over 2022 and 2023. TV ratings continue their gradual decline as audiences drift online. Free-TV remains critical for mass ad campaigns, but growth is capped, held up largely by local consumer brands,” said MPA executive director Vivek Couto said.

“Meanwhile, Indonesia remains Southeast Asia’s most intense battleground for streamers. By consumption and value, it is the largest market in Southeast Asia Improvements in the quality of local content, combined with the proven viability of Korea content and localized tier-1 US content, has helped drive user acquisition and engagement. More rational pricing and packaging is helping to slowly boost per-subscriber economics.

“The challenge remains the growth of free VOD platforms YouTube and TikTok. Both dominate viewership on mobile, while YouTube is also increasingly popular on CTV. YouTube also remains the VOD category leader in terms of revenues by some distance, though TikTok is growing rapidly and Netflix leads SVOD.”

This year’s HollyShorts, which runs from August 10-20, has received a record number of submissions on analog film. Kodak film grants will be awarded to winners in a number of categories, as part of the brand’s long-term collaboration with HollyShorts.

ACQUISITION

The BBC has acquired Australian crime drama “Black Snow” for BBC Four and BBC iPlayer from All3Media International. The six-part series stars Travis Fimmel, Jemmason Power, Talijah Blackman-Corowa, Eden Cassady, Seini Willett and Gulliver McGrath.

In the show, a small-town Australian high-school gathers for the ceremonial opening of a time-capsule buried by a class some 20 years ago, shortly after the murder of class-member Isabelle Baker. Isabelle’s family and the police are shocked when the capsule is opened to reveal cryptic messages in Isabelle’s written statement. The messages and other long-lost items suggest Isabelle knew she was in danger in the days leading to her murder and the case is re-opened.

“Black Snow” (6 x 55′) is produced by Goalpost Pictures for Stan, Australia and Sundance Now U.S..

FESTIVAL Patty Jenkins Set to Appear at HollyShorts

In July 2022, I ranked the MCU’s Phase Four titles thus far.

A little more than a year later, we have crept into Phase Five and have more information about Marvel’s post-pandemic run.

Those sure are a lot of Kang images in Loki season two!

Image: Marvel

Let’s be blunt that the past year has unveiled a couple of clunkers. So, here’s how I would rank the past year of the MCU.

6) Secret Invasion

All joking aside, Samuel L. Jackson looks tired.

Image: Marvel

Woof.

Folks, I’m a stubbornly optimistic person who notoriously finds the good in pretty much anything.

Even I may not ever go back and watch Secret Invasion again. Those last two episodes were so awful that they made my eyes bleed.

Please don't grab me by the throat! Decapitation is my one weakness!

Image: Marvel

Something happened behind the scenes with this project. At some point, everyone just stopped trying and gave up.

I don’t know how else to explain the sudden appearance and disappearance of various characters.

Most notably, Tony Curran, the villain from Underworld: Evolution and antihero of SyFy’s Defiance, appears in one scene.

ROCK FIGHT!!!

Image: Marvel

A main character states he’s a Skrull, kills him, and takes over his job.

That’s great if we know A) who is this guy? B) what his job is? C) and how the other person knows he’s a Skrull?

Mama, I'm coming hooooooooome.

Image: Marvel

The MCU hadn’t experienced a failure this total since Thor: The Dark World.

In fact, I like that movie better than this television series.

5) Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Father and daughter encounter the oddities of the Quantum Realm

Image: Marvel

Then, we have the pink elephant dancing in the living room.

Marvel started its 2023 box office campaign by derailing the recent success of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

As one film earned Marvel unprecedented awards season prestige, Ant-Man 3 debuted to a loud clunk sound.

Janet emerges from the Quantum Realm as a changed woman

Image: Marvel

Early reviews foreshadowed that Marvel had missed with this one, but nobody truly appreciated the degree of failure until we sat in the theater.

Quantumania is objectively an ugly film. The special effects (SFX) in the Quantum Realm qualify as anything but special.

Not coincidentally, longtime Marvel executive Victoria Alonso lost her job.

Victoria Alonso Office

Image: Marvel Studios

Remarkably, this happened less than two years after Marvel had promoted Alonso.

She’d previously announced last summer that she was working on her memoir. The Quantumania section of that book is gonna be lit!

A website published a critique of Marvel’s treatment of its SFX team. It hinted at a toxic culture faced with impossible assignments.

The Kang version of the Ant-Man poster

The look of Quantumania suggested reinforced this piece of journalism.

However, a good script could have saved the film. Unfortunately, Quantumania makes little sense at several key moments.

The Bill Murray Quantumania poster

Bill Murray apparently had a larger role but then faced accusations that could have gotten him canceled. So, Marvel dialed down his presence.

In the process, some of the story got lost in translation. Meanwhile, Jonathan Majors stood out for his performance but then, well, you know.

4) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Source: Marvel studios

I referenced this in the last section, and it’s true. For her work as the haunted Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever, Angela Bassett won a Golden Globe.

For a time, Bassett counted as the frontrunner for Best Actress, but that award eventually went to Jamie Lee Curtis.

Source: Marvel Studios

Marvel fans adored Bassett’s portrayal of Ramonda, who had lost her husband and her son in a short period.

As Queen of Wakanda, Ramonda must lead her people rather than dwell on her pain. Meanwhile, a new Black Panther ascends, and this is her story.

Source: Marvel Studios

Of course, Wakanda Forever also introduces the new underwater species led by Namor, who earns much of the focus.

That aspect summarizes Marvel’s past year. The actor portraying the character has also faced accusations of sexual assault this year.

Shuri, Marvel

I don’t know how much of this stems from lackluster vetting at Marvel as opposed to horrific luck, but it’s happened three times in a year.

Marvel owes its loyal fans better than that.

On the plus side, Wakanda Forever is quite good. That’s not just me saying that, either.

Shuri

The film holds an A Cinemascore and a current Rotten Tomatoes grade of 83 percent among Top Critics and 94 percent in Audience Score.

Notably, I’m only ranking it fourth, which underscores that most Marvel releases over the past year have been exceptional.

We still can’t overlook the two subpar offerings, though.

3) She-Hulk

Source: Marvel Studios

Now we’re having fun. And that’s something the MCU had lacked during the pandemic.

For whatever reason, most of the titles lacked that spark fans crave. Among recent Marvel releases, only Spider-Man: No Way Home brought the funny.

Source: Marvel Studios

As a reminder, the Spider-Man films come from Sony Pictures, not The Walt Disney Company, the latter of which owns Marvel.

So, when Sony does Disney content better than Disney, that’s a problem.

Source: Marvel Studios

Thankfully, She-Hulk brought the funny early and often. The odd courtship between Jennifer Walters and Matt Murdock led to some hysterical moments.

Also, a not-quite superhero with a frog obsession and his desire for a top-tier costume led to one of my favorite Disney+ episodes thus far.

Source: Marvel Studios

Then, we had the K.E.V.I.N. discussion, which took the show to the next level in breaking the fourth wall.

This show was fearless and terrific, and I definitely want more.

PS: She-Hulk gets huuuuge bonus points for Madisynn.

2) Ms. Marvel

Source: Marvel Studios

Still, She-Hulk wasn’t my favorite Marvel series during the past year. That honor belongs instead to Ms. Marvel.

Much of the credit goes to Iman Vellani, which I’m surprised to say.

I must confess to misgivings about her age and, well, size due to some early on-set photos.

first look at ms. marvel in super suit

Photo: @BRMarvelNews

For whatever reason, those misleading images made Vellani look like a 12-year-old standing next to her college-aged big brother.

In reality, Vellani was interacting with one of her two potential love interests in the show, and something about the angle of that photograph skewed their sizes.

Vellani, while still young for an MCU superheroine, absolutely drilled this role, and Marvel noticed.

Source: @brielarson

The actress will soon pen the Ms. Marvel comic book, aptly reflecting her intuitive understanding of this character.

While Ms. Marvel episodes were mercurial and often imperfect, they oozed charm. More importantly, everyone’s heart was in the right place here.

Ms. Marvel basks in the glory of outer space in The Marvels

Image: Marvel

This series is like a superhero K-drama in the best possible way. It also shares a few analogs with Pixar’s lovely 2023 release, Elemental.

I highly recommend both!

1) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Rocket ends his voyage of self-discovery by acknowledging he IS a raccoon

Image: Marvel

Just this morning, a friend indicated that she quit watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (GotG3) barely halfway through the story.

I fully get that behavior, even though she should have stuck with the film.

The High Evoluionary accidentally trains a future Guardian of the Galaxy

Image: Marvel

I say this because GotG3 can feel quite harrowing at times. The villain in this story performs acts of abuse on children and animals.

Most of what we learn is implied rather than shown on camera, but that’s not the point.

Cosmo hears those dreaded words no dog likes

Image: Marvel

The natural reaction of any decent human being is to abhor such cruelty to those unable to defend themselves…like children and animals.

However, presuming that you can sit through the somewhat traumatic moments in the story, director James Gunn will reward you.

Drax and Mantis aren't meant for the burbs

Image: Marvel

Frankly, Gunn has never done better in his career or even approached the level of storytelling on display in GotG3.

This film provides a satisfying conclusion to the three-movie story arc for the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Guardians of the Galaxy view the vacuum of space

Image: Marvel

Along the way, we finally learn why Rocket Raccoon behaves the way that he does…and it’s heart-wrenching.

Thankfully, by the end of the film, all the popular characters have savored their moments in the sun, a personal act of gratitude from the director to the actors he adores.

This is your idea of a first date, Quill?

Image: Marvel

No matter who your favorite Guardian is, they’ll do something in this film that leaves you happy long after the fact.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stands shoulder-to-shoulder alongside the greatest MCU movies to date. It’s that good.

Summary

  • James Gunn evades the question about whether Grant Gustin’s Flash will appear in his DCU, giving a cryptic answer to a fan on social media.
  • Fans hoping for Gustin’s inclusion based on his social media interaction with Gunn are grasping at straws.
  • Gunn is known for promoting his work and interacting with fans on social media, but he won’t announce Gustin’s involvement unless it’s confirmed.

James Gunn dodges the Grant Gustin question in a “Flash.” Out of the demise of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) will rise James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe (DCU). For the sake of all fans, the move will hopefully be more instrumental than simply dropping the “E” in DCEU. But Gunn refuses to give a definitive answer to whether the CW’s Flash/Barry Allen (Gustin) will appear in his DCU.

Gunn addressed a question posed by @matthewchadd1987 on Threads about the filmmaker’s activity with Gustin online. Gunn and Gustin’s interaction was interpreted as possible proof that the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise might include the CW’s version of the Flash in the DCU.

@matthewchadd1987 wrote in a thread:

“Hey, James. It seems you’re following Grant Gustin on Instagram. Is it true that he is joining your DCU reboot as Barry Allen/The Flash again, or is he playing a different comic book character, please? Thank you very much, James.”

Gunn responded cryptically in the same thread:

“Grant was following me, and I like him as an actor. So, we chatted a bit, and I followed him back. Very simple!”

Fans of the CW’s The Flash — the show ran for nine seasons on television — are loyal and passionate about Gustin’s interpretation of the Scarlet Speedster in the Arrowverse. But hoping that a social media “follow” equates to the character’s inclusion in the DCU is tantamount to grasping at straws.

Gunn Didn’t Reveal if Gustin’s Flash Will Appear in the DCU

James Gunn kept his answer cryptic when a fan asked him on social media if Grant Gustin’s version of Barry Allen, aka the Flash, was speeding into the DCU. What the filmmaker did do was dodge the question without providing a clear-cut, yes-or-no answer. Gunn has become well-versed in using social media platforms, particularly Twitter, to promote his work and interact with others online. So, he’s not going to let something like Grant Gustin’s possible involvement in the DCU slip, much less announce it at the behest of a Flash enthusiast.

If Gustin does become involved with the DCU somewhere in the future, Gunn will be the first to jump on the Cosmic Treadmill to announce the news on social media. Some fans chimed in on the conversation, too, as they felt at odds with @matthewchadd1987’s reasoning behind the speculation.

@fabianogama wrote in the same thread:

“I’ve heard you [James Gunn] put ice in your cup of water and use fire to cook your meals. Does that mean you will cast Fire & Ice characters in Superman: Legacy?”

@theladyflash also wrote:

“Lmao people are reading into everything like they’re Sherlock Holmes.”

Some fans of the Flash mythology are obviously still perplexed by Gustin’s exclusion in Ezra Miller’s big-screen adventure in The Flash. With that film’s theme firmly centered on DC’s multiverse, including Gustin seemed like a no-brainer — especially when Miller’s Scarlet Speedster did in fact show up in the CW’s Arrowverse and briefly met Gustin’s Flash.

However, for the time being, the only characters fans know for sure will show up in the DCU are the ones James Gunn officially announces. And Gustin’s Flash isn’t a part of the plan, at the time of this writing.

“For some time now Deck13 has focused heavily on offering difficult action RPGs that would fall under the soulslike category, putting their own unique spins on the formula to try and set themselves apart from others in the genre. While Lords of the Fallen back in 2014 may have been fairly close in nature, their later The Surge series saw the developer experimenting more to some rather solid success. Now Deck13 has moved to try something a bit different with Atlas Fallen, instead offering an open world action game focused on fast-paced combat and powerful monsters. Has this German developer managed to find treasure in the desert that is Atlas Fallen?”

1. It’s All Collaboration

‘Project Greenlight: A New Generation’

Filmmaking is a collaborative process that involves various professionals, from directors and writers to cinematographers and editors.

On a show like Project Greenlight: A New Generation, you really get to see the nitty gritty of what it takes to work together with people.

Effective communication and teamwork are crucial for a successful project. And if you get wires crossed, the problems trickle down from there.

2. You Can’t be Over Prepared

Issa Rae on '\u200bProject Greenlight: A New Generation'

‘Project Greenlight: A New Generation’

Credit: Max

In the most recent season, I found that they left the director on an island a lot and expected her to just know how things are done.

I’m not sure why you have mentors if no one is teaching, but it showed me that you have to prepare. And then prepare some more.

Thorough pre-production planning, including script development, storyboarding, and scheduling, can help streamline the filmmaking process and prevent unnecessary issues later on.

3. Nothing is Set In Stone

Meko Winbush on 'Project Greenlight: A New Generation'

‘Project Greenlight: A New Generation’

Credit: Max

This season was defined by problems that arose in all sorts of different areas. And the drama of the TV came from watching Meko Winbush deal with them. And sometimes, it felt like they were coming a mile a minute.

The script was wrong, the casting falling apart, etc.

Filmmaking never goes exactly as planned. Being able to adapt to unexpected challenges, whether they’re related to location, budget, or casting, is a vital skill for filmmakers.

4. Learn Where to Spend Money

On set with 'Project Greenlight: A New Generation'

‘Project Greenlight: A New Generation’

Credit: Max

This is something I think doesn’t come up on the show enough, but really should. So much of making a movie is making decisions based on the money you have.

Money affects days, cast, scenes, and everything that happens.

Budget constraints are common in filmmaking. Learning how to make the most of limited resources without compromising the quality of the film is a valuable lesson.

5. Find a Mentor You Trust

Producers on '\u200bProject Greenlight: A New Generation'

‘Project Greenlight: A New Generation’

Credit: Max

As I mentioned briefly earlier, I always think the mentors on this show need to be more involved. They’re dropping in a director with a broken script and a bunch of people with immediate opinions.

In real life, find some mentors! People who you can talk to (without cameras) about the hurdles of this business. People who have experience and want to share it with you.

Receiving and incorporating constructive feedback from peers, mentors, and team members can lead to significant improvements in the script, direction, and overall production.

And people who have been there before have endless amounts of wisdom you can tap into.

6. Details Matter

'\u200bProject Greenlight: A New Generation' old insignia

‘Project Greenlight: A New Generation’

Credit: Max

While every episode has a big theme this year, you’ll see that the details are what goes wrong or right, and what dictates how things turn out.

One of the funnier things in the season is just how many details go wrong. It starts with the script and then trickles downward to casting follies, COVID, and post.

The more you can get the details right, the more things will go your way.

7. Take Your Time Casting

'\u200bProject Greenlight: A New Generation' Movie

‘Gray Matter’

Credit: Max

Selecting the right actors for each role is crucial. A strong cast can bring depth and authenticity to the characters and contribute to the film’s success.

While it’s hard to tell how much time Winbush was given to cast Gray Matter, it never felt like enough on screen. Taking your time with this stuff matters because so much of the success of a film has to do with the people packaged inside it and their performances in it.

Get people you can trust to do a great job. Don’t settle for less.

8. The Script Is the Most Important Part

Filmmaking is about storytelling. Crafting a compelling narrative with well-defined characters, clear stakes, and emotional resonance is at the heart of a successful film.

So that’s why I felt really bad for Meko Winbush when they gave her a script they had major problems with and asked her to basically rewrite it while in pre-production.

You have to spend time getting the script right before you jump into shooting. It’s not something you can fix in post.

9. Find a Way to Mesh With Many Personalities

'\u200bProject Greenlight: A New Generation' casting photos

‘Project Greenlight: A New Generation’

Credit: Max

The one thing the show gets right is that it shows you have to work with a ton of different people to get a movie made. You may not like all of them. They may not even like you, but you all have to work together.

Treat people with respect. That’s really the most important part of any collaboration.

Creative disagreements among team members happen all the time. Learning how to navigate and resolve conflicts while keeping the project’s best interests in mind is the most important skill.

10. Keep Fighting

'\u200bProject Greenlight: A New Generation' winner

Meko Winbush

Credit: Max

Every season of Project Greenlight comes down to the same thing: fighting through a project to see it through to the end.

Filmmaking can be challenging and demanding. Persevering through obstacles, setbacks, and doubts is essential to seeing a project through to completion.

That’s what makes this good TV and also what makes what we do so hard.

Let me know what you thought of this season in the comments.

Big Brother contestant Luke Valentine
Photo: Sonja Flemming/CBS

The American version of Big Brother has found itself in a fresh controversy this week, after the show expelled contestant Luke Valentine for being the first player to be punished for violating its no-tolerance policy on racial slurs and other hate speech. (Given that the zero-tolerance version of the policy has been around, as far as people can tell, for about three years at this point, it’s actually kind of shocking that Valentine is the first to be expelled for it.) Valentine was heard using a slur on the show’s 24/7 feeds, which broadcast constantly from the Big Brother house, on Tuesday night.

Big Brother has a long and complicated history of guests using racist language and other objectionable behavior on the feeds; the combination of constant surveillance, TV show pressure, and good old-fashioned racism has led to a number of problematic instances. (Last season’s winner, Taylor Hale, has spoken about experiencing numerous microaggressions and other bullying from other cast members on the series.) But while previous BB U.S. expulsions have typically been related to acts of physical violence, Valentine’s is the first expulsion for using a slur, which he used while in conversation with his fellow contestants, later calling the moment—while talking to fellow player Jared Fields, who’s Black—”a slip of the tongue.”

As noted by The Daily Beast, Big Brothers issues with racism came prominently to light back in the 2020 season, which featured multiple instances of people using slurs—once, while singing the lyrics of a song, and another time during an argument between contestants. (It was around then that the show issued a tweet saying that “hate speech will not be tolerated, and those who violate the policy will be removed from the Big Brother house.”)

The show has issued a statement about Valentine’s expulsion, noting that it’ll be addressed on Thursday night’s episode.

Ali Wentworth is an actor, producer, and author known for her roles in Jerry Maguire, It’s Complicated, and Nightcap. She most recently served as producer of the Hulu documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields. Here she opens up about aging in Hollywood, society’s relentless pursuit of youth, and why mature women should be celebrated by society, not cast aside.

Maybe I never really focused on my exterior because my mother never emphasized it—or wore makeup, for that matter, even as the social secretary of the supremely glamorous Reagan White House.

Growing up in Washington, DC, I was a rather plump teenager—the kind of girth that strengthens comedic chops—who was content with Chapstick and Head & Shoulders shampoo as my beauty routine. Even as a young actor, with all the pressures of youth and beauty, I never felt the need to hide imperfections nor doll them up.

And, frankly, I was just never under the spotlight of potential ingenue material. In my 40-year career in entertainment, I’ve never had to fight a nudity clause. I fought to be nude in scenes. The studios fought back.

I was young and had not fully formed into my authentic self. I guzzled cotton-candy-flavored Big Gulps and smoked Camel lights. Don’t get me wrong, I brush my teeth and pay exorbitant amounts of money on hydrating face creams, but it’s always been my priority to focus on the inside. I had skipped along the merry path of life with nary a beauty care. That is, until recently.

I am 58 years old. Aging is a stinging slap in the face, and I can only assume an excruciating Oscar slap for any narcissist. That moment, in the harsh morning light, when you first discover that solitary white chin hair, sirens go off like an air raid signifying, “You’re done, ma’am!”

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve witnessed the lengths some women will go to to fool the world as they try to nip and tuck off a couple of decades. I get it! I’ve repeatedly been seduced by the idea of injecting snake semen into my face with the hope of acquiring a teenage glow. You can get a ponytail facelift, lift your boobs with metal wire attached to a hovering helicopter, augment your cheekbones, hell, sandblast 20 layers of your skin!

But guess what? It’s still you underneath. Truth be told, I myself have succumbed to the pressures of youthful relevance by trusting a doctor to poke into my insecurities.

I recently produced a documentary called Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, a film that explores the toll sexualization and objectification take on women, as well as the ruthless fascination with youth and beauty. This relentless pursuit of youth by women, a pursuit ironically propelled by men, is also why I chose to partner with Laura Geller, a leading makeup brand that champions the value of older beauty.

We recently came together to create The Invisible Woman, a short film that sheds light on the universal experience of feeling invisible during this incredibly awkward “middle age” women enter. That’s right, for good or bad and due to seismic medical advances, we are living much longer. So middle age hits at 60 years old. Not like our ancestors who died of scurvy at the age of 30. In which case, middle age was 15. And, despite being mothers, executives, creators, and, if I’m being honest, the backbones of society, we’re rendered near obsolete.

Lebanon, once thought of as among the most liberal parts of the Middle East, is poised to ban global hit movie “Barbie.” More conservative Kuwait said Wednesday that it had gone ahead with a ban due to its promotion of homosexuality.

Lebanon’s culture minister Mohammad Mortada said on Wednesday that the Warner Bros. film was found to “promote homosexuality and sexual transformation” and “contradicts values of faith and morality” by diminishing the importance of the family unit.

“Based on Mortada’s move, Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi in turn asked General Security’s censorship committee, which falls under the interior ministry and is traditionally responsible for censorship decisions, to review the film and give its recommendation,” the Reuters news agency reported.

Variety has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment.

The film was originally scheduled to debut in the Middle East on July 19, two days before landing in the rest of the world’s multiplexes. It now looks to go ahead in some Middle East markets, including the biggest Saudi Arabia, at the end of August.

The release date was initially moved to Aug. 10 and has now been pushed back to Aug. 31, after local censors suggested edits allegedly pertaining to LGBTQ-related narration and dialogue in “Barbie.”
“Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has already generated $1.03 billion at the global box office, including $468 million in North America.

Lebanon has a long history of religious and sexual tolerance in a region known to be conservative. And it was the first Arab country to hold a gay pride week, in 2017. But with the country enduring a period of economic and political chaos that position may now be changing.

Malawi, who is backed by the Shi’ite armed group Hezbollah, and Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah have both spoken recently on LGBT matters. Mawlawi last year banned events “promoting sexual perversion.” Nasrallah has said that homosexuality poses an “imminent danger” to Lebanon and should be “confronted.” People engaged in homosexual acts should be “killed,” he said.

Movies that concern or contain sex, homosexuality and religious issues are routinely cut in the Middle East to comply with censorship rules. If a studio is unwilling to make the adjustments suggested by censors, the films are banned from playing in theaters. Most recently, Sony’s summer blockbuster “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was not approved for release in Saudi and the UAE likely because of a scene that featured a “Protect Trans Lives” flag.

Kuwait is understood to have banned supernatural horror film “Talk to Me” because of the appearance of a transsexual actor. Its state news agency said that it had banned “Barbie” and “Talk to Me” in order to protect “public ethics and social traditions.”

Vietnam banned the film for showing a map that it alleged depicted China’s illegal territorial claims.

It’s the tour that never ends and thanks to the Eras tour and its many stops, we got to see a super sweet, viral moment between Taylor Swift and Kobe Bryant’s 6-year-old daughter.

On August 3, Taylor Swift was in Los Angeles for the first of her LA-based concerts. And in the audience was Vanessa and Bianka Bryant, the wife and daughter of the late athlete.

According to USA Today, in a photo shared to Instagram by Vanessa Bryant, that has since gone viral, we get to see the sweet moment when Swift knelt down on stage to give Bianka a hug. Videos of the moment have also been shared online, and they not only show the singer kneeling to hug Kobe’s daughter, but at the same time, the singer also put her black bowler hat on Bryant’s head and seemed to say something to the little girl.

Taylor Swift has a viral moment with Kobe Bryant’s daughter during Eras tour

Following the photo post from Vanessa Bryant, she also shared a video that featured footage of Kobe Bryant “presenting Swift with a championship banner for the most sold-out shows at Staples Center in 2015.”

All things considered, these are the types of moments we have come to expect from not only the Eras tour, but also Taylor Swift herself. We love to see these heartwarming moments and the things that remind us why we love Swift so much.

There is a reason the tour is basically sold out and more dates keep being added, and that is the fact that Taylor Swift has built herself a legion of fans. Those fans love her for not only her talent and gift with vocals, but also the fact that she routinely gives us these moments that remind us of how special the singer really is.

We can’t help but love the fact that Swift took the time out of her performance to show her love to Kobe Bryant’s 6-year-old daughter. And it is these sweet moments that have us breaking into song and proclaiming ourselves to be Swifties too!

Barbie music producer Mark Ronson isn’t here for Bill Maher’s take on Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar hit.

Ronson, who oversaw the Barbie soundtrack album and also co-produced and co-wrote several of the movie’s standout songs, including “I’m Just Ken,” took to social media on Tuesday to share his thoughts on the talk show host calling the movie “preachy, man-hating and a #ZombieLie.”

“We come to this place for magic,” Ronson began a tweet, imitating Nicole Kidman’s infamous ad. “We come to AMC theaters to laugh, to cry, to care… and to furiously google ‘mattel board configuration’ while others are trying to enjoy a f***king magnificent comedy.”

Ronson, who won an Academy Award in 2019 for best original song, was reacting to Maher’s four-paragraph tweet posted on Wednesday. The Real Time host writing that Barbie ended up being what he expected, even though he hoped it wouldn’t be.

“OK, ‘Barbie’: I was hoping it wouldn’t be preachy, man-hating, and a #ZombieLie – alas, it was all three,” Maher wrote. “What is a Zombie Lie? Something that never was true, but certain people refuse to stop saying it (tax cuts for the rich increase revenues, e.g.); OR something that USED to be true but no longer is, but certain people pretend it’s still true. ‘Barbie’ is this kind of #ZombieLie.”

He went on to address parts of the film — which are, heads up, a bit spoiler-y — explaining that when Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) approach the Mattel board in the real world, it consists of 12 white men.

“The real Mattel board is a pretty close mirror of the country, where 45% of the 449 board seats filled last year in Fortune 500 companies were women,” he continued. “Truth is, I’m not the one who’s out of step – I’m living in the year we’re living in. Barbie is fun, I enjoyed it – but it IS a #ZombieLie. And people who don’t go along with zombie lies did not take some red pill – just staying true to CURRENT reality.”

Maher joins Ben Shapiro and Elon Musk, who have both shared negative takes on Gerwig’s Barbie.

There is only one Hollywood celebrity with bizarro bona fides that could bring together the cult-loved elite such as Pee-wee Herman, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, the B-52’s and Alice Cooper. That star is Weird Al Yankovic.

In a scene from Roku Channel’s Emmy-nominated biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” a constellation of comic actors portrays that eccentric pop cultural elite in a key pool party scene just as the career of Al Yankovic (Daniel Radcliffe) starts to launch. The party is at the home of radio legend Dr. Demento (Rainn Wilson), where Yankovic is challenged to come up with a parody song

on the fly by Queen bassist John Deacon (David Dastmalchian). Yankovic belts out “Another One Rides the Bus” to enthusiastic applause from the celebs — his eventual friends and peers — including Salvador Dali (Emo Philips), Tiny Tim (Demetri Martin), Andy Warhol (Conan O’Brien) and  Wolfman Jack (Jack Black).

Hot off their project’s eight Emmy nominations, director, writer and producer Eric Appel, costume designer Wendy Benbrook and the inspiration behind it all, producer and writer, Yankovic, broke down their comedian-stuffed act for Variety‘s “Making A Scene,” presented by HBO.

Inspired by the pool party scene from “Boogie Nights,” Appel set up an homage of sorts to director Paul Thomas Anderson with his own series of Steadicam shots whisking from Gallagher (played by Paul F. Tompkins) to Divine (Nina West).

“In a lot of ways, the relationship between Weird Al and Dr. Demento in this movie mirrors that relationship between [“Boogie Nights’”] Dirk Diggler and Jack Horner,” Appel explains. “Dr. Demento steps in as a father figure for Al in this movie. In ‘Boogie Nights,’ the scene is Dirk Diggler getting brought around this pool party in the Valley and introduced to all of his peers, which are porn stars in that case. In our movie, we wanted to see a young, fresh-faced Weird Al get introduced to all of his peers, which would be the weirdo comedians and rock stars of the late ’70s, early ’80s.”

This meant scheduling, dressing and sourcing wigs, makeup and costumes for dozens of actors — with only a day and a half to shoot.

“It was an $8 million budget — we’re not shooting it on our cell phones, but it’s a small budget by Hollywood standards,” Yankovic says. “Thankfully, we shot in Los Angeles because that allowed me to call in some favors.”

Appel confirms. “Al basically just shared his Christmas card mailing list with me and he said, ‘Here are people that I know well enough that I can reach out via text or email and get a yes or no really quick.’”

The original plan was to shoot in Atlanta. While that “would’ve been fine,” some people, like O’Brien, wouldn’t have been available. So Yankovic “emailed a bunch of people that I knew and asked them if they wanted to drive to Tarzana and be in this crazy movie.”

And to Tarzana they arrived, each actor more excited than the next. “Jorma Taccone came up to play Pee-wee Herman — he flew himself out from New York,” the director says. “He was like, ‘Should I get my hair cut like Pee-wee before I come out?’” Appel assured Taccone that they would handle his glam themselves.

As the pool scene cast started coming together, there was one add-on from Yankovic: Could Devo attend the party? That meant a last-minute scouring for the iconic, “energy dome” headgear the band wore.

“We were reaching out to friends [asking], ‘Who’s got a Devo hat?” costume designer Benbrook says. “But all the friends that we thought had Devo hats … did not. And oddly enough, that was the weirdest thing for me.”

Eventually, Appel sourced the missing artifact and Benbrook drove out to Saugus to collect the elusive piece. She notes, “I’ve got a picture of me with the hat on from my car sending it to Eric going, ‘We did it!’”

As for Yankovic’s staple Hawaiian shirt, Benbrook studied her subject intensely and sought inspiration from the singer’s own closet. “I got to look at all of his Vans and all of his shirts, which made me realize, they’re not all Hawaiian as we think of them as … They were iconic ’80s new wave shirts but everyone calls them all Hawaiian shirts.”

That discovery was reflected in the collection of wild-patterned button-downs Radcliffe wore. However, Yankovic did loan out his original “Eat It” jacket for the film.

Another major inspiration came from the song choice at the pool scene. After being tasked with creating a new tune for the crowd, the character Al belts out, “Another One Rides the Bus.” Despite the comedic overtones, that song selection was entirely intentional.

“We are focusing on my origin story,” Yankovich explains. “And ‘Another One Rides the Bus’ was one of my very first songs that ever got nationwide exposure. We thought the idea of having that be a big throwdown would be a fun idea at the party because we could have Jon ‘Bermuda’ Schwartz banging on my accordion case, which he actually did in the original recording. The original recording was extremely organic, and we thought, what better way to showcase that than at this freeform weirdo party?”

And even though the guest list was labeled “odd” over and over in both the movie and during these interviews, the “weird” label, like the film’s title, has always been a badge of honor for Yankovic (and the filmmakers).

“I never fit in, and I still don’t in many ways,” Yankovic says. “Looking at those people gave me hope to think that, ‘Oh, maybe I’ve got a chance to put myself out there if these people are doing it that way.’ And some of the people that we portray in that scene are personal friends of mine. I know Elvira, I know Pee-wee Herman. We didn’t tell them in advance because that was our policy for this movie.”

He notes that the lawyers assured them it was OK, since they’re public features who will view it as a tribute.

“I hope they do. I know that Paul Reubens does, but it was a little weird. [Ed note: Reubens died July 30, after this interview was conducted.] I think Jorma in particular, who played Pee-wee Herman, he felt really strange about it because he was like, ‘Are you sure Paul’s going to be OK with this?’” Yankovic says. “But he was. I knew he would be.”
