Marvel Comics announces a major upcoming comic book event called Ultimate Invasion, with a preview coming in the near future.

Fans of Marvel Comics have learned to accept its habit of integrating some synergy with the MCU. Not only has it revisited previous comic events like Secret Invasion and Planet Hulk, but it’s even included characters straight from the MCU, like Phil Coulson, Darcy Lewis, and even most recently May Calamawy’s Layla El-Faouly.

However, that doesn’t mean everything that Marvel Comics does is indicative of Marvel Studios’ plans for the MCU. But it’s fun to speculate nonetheless, especially when it involves the hot-button topic of the Multiverse.

Marvel Comics is preparing for one multiversal invasion from a wayward universe.

A Marvel Universe Invasion!

In February, Marvel Comics announced a four-issue saga called Ultimate Invasion, headed by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Bryan Hitch, who were the primary architects of the original Ultimate Universe.

Launched over 20 years ago to attract new readers, the Ultimate Universe provided a fresh take on classic Marvel characters. But this universe met its cataclysmic end in Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars comic event in 2015.

However, this new event will see the superheroes of Earth-616 clash with one of the few survivors of the Ultimate Universe once again. The Maker, an evil and twisted Reed Richards, believes his former universe will make a grand return, forcing the Illuminati to reform to stop his plans, which involve another former Ultimate Universe denizen—Miles Morales.

Hickman explained how this event “couldn’t be replicating or revisiting what Bryan did in the original Ultimates” or what he did, “which was a final chapter of a pre-existing universe:”

“[Revisiting the idea of Ultimate Comics] couldn’t be replicating or revisiting what Bryan did in the original ULTIMATES—creating a streamlined, modernized version that would eventually become the spine of the MCU, and it certainly couldn’t be what I did, which was a final chapter of a pre-existing universe.”

He explained that the idea was for the Ultimate Comics line “to be inverted from what the original universe was” and that for this upcoming event “to be something that could really only exist in the comic space:”

“We also thought the very idea of Ultimate Comics needed to be inverted from what the original universe was—we wanted this to be something that could really only exist in the comic space: a new way of thinking about, and enjoying, a new version of the Marvel Universe. I’m pretty happy to say that it feels like we’ve accomplished those things and we’re very excited for everyone to get to read it.”

Hitch, meanwhile, expressed his excitement at revisiting the universe he helped start alongside “the man who so brilliantly and spectacularly destroyed” it:

“It’s been more than 20 years since I started work on THE ULTIMATES, a project that would have a big impact on my own career and beyond, so when Marvel came to me with the idea of revisiting the Ultimate Universe with the man who so brilliantly and spectacularly destroyed the last one, I was both feet in!”

He described how Hickman as “a terrific writer of big, sprawling epics” and that he will now bring “two decades of new experience as an artist and storyteller” to this upcoming event:

“Jonathan is a terrific writer of big, sprawling epics, and we’ve talked about working together more than once so for this new Ultimate Universe adventure to unite us is very exciting. I get to bring two decades of new experience as an artist and storyteller to this. It’s new, different and familiar. It’s big budget, high-concept, widescreen storytelling. I feel right at home.”

But now, another announcement has given fans new details about this upcoming event and how it involves Brooklyn’s Spider-Man.

Preview at Ultimate Invasion Event

For this upcoming Free Comic Book Day, Marvel will be releasing Spider-Man/Venom #1, giving fans a glimpse of a “dramatic scene” from the forthcoming first issue of Ultimate Invasion.

In it, the Maker offers Miles Morales something “he may not be able to refuse” as the reunited Illuminati attempts to stop the Maker’s plans to reshape the Marvel Universe.

It’s unknown what the Maker could even give Miles, considering he has everything he’d want on Earth-616: his mother, father, and best friend, Ganke. In fact, his mother was killed in the Ultimate Universe, so the Maker’s offer would have to be something special.

Should MCU’s Earth-616 Expect an Invasion?

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, audiences were introduced to Earth-838, where Wanda Maximoff slaughtered nearly all of its Illuminati members, leaving only Mordo and another unknown member. That universe would have more than enough motive to hate Earth-616 after one of its own killed some of its greatest heroes and leaders.

Hickman’s Secret Wars, which will be at least partially adapted by Marvel Studios with Avengers: Secret Wars, began with an Incursion that pitted Earth-616 against the Ultimate Universe, Earth-1610. So it could be that when the final Incursion happens in the MCU, it’ll be Earth-616 and Earth-838 as the last two universes standing.

Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to release in theaters on May 1, 2026.

May the 4th has brought a number of moments celebrating the Star Wars saga, but none is more special than this one. Carrie Fisher was honored on Thursday with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Most known for her role as Leia Organa across the Star Wars original and sequel trilogies, Fisher passed in 2016. Her legacy lives on through her daughter, Billie Lourd, her grandchildren, and through thousands of Star Wars fans around the globe. Lourd and Mark Hamill, Fisher’s space twin, attend the ceremony and gave speeches honoring Carrie Fisher.

Lucasfilm

Lourd remembered her mom and spoke about how she lives on through everyone who loves Princess Leia. She recalled watching Star Wars and realizing, “No one is or will ever be as hot or as cool as Princess Leia.” She then sprinkled glitter on Carrie Fisher’s star since her mom loved glitter. And yes, Lourd’s dress featuring Carrie Fisher as Leia is perfect.

Hamill said he’ll never stop missing her, but that he’s grateful we had the time we had with her. And he’ll continue to be with her, in a way, as Hamill’s own star is only a few feet away.

Carrie Fisher deserves the world. We’re happy to see her star on the Walk of Fame and have no doubt that fans will soon make pilgrimages to it.

A welcome recent change in Destiny 2 has seen the addition of raid and dungeon Triumphs that increase the likelihood of getting the random Exotic weapons associated with those activities. In other words, completing optional objectives makes it more likely that you’ll obtain the very rare, highly desirable Exotics as you repeat those raids and dungeons. But this is only true for a select number of those activities, something that will be changing in the upcoming Season of the Deep.

The Exotics from five more raids will soon have Triumphs that boost your personal drop rate. This is only for randomly dropped Exotics, but notably, these boosts will be attached to existing Triumphs. These are retroactive, meaning if you’ve already completed the Triumphs in question, you’ll immediately have the boosted drop rate.

This applies to One Thousand Voices (the fusion rifle from Last Wish), Eyes of Tomorrow (the rocket launcher from Deepstone Crypt), Collective Obligation (the pulse rifle from Vow of the Disciple), Vex Mythoclast (the fusion rifle from Vault of Glass), and Touch of Malice (the scout rifle from Kingsfall).

While this is a notable improvement for those who have put in the time to unlock these Triumphs but haven’t lucked into these raids’ Exotics, it’s one of multiple Exotic-centric changes coming in Season 21. Bungie will also be introducing a new means of focusing Exotic armor you already own, allowing you to get better stat rolls on them, and will swap Exotic engram drops in place of certain Pinnacle rewards each week.

Here are the specific bonuses you’ll receive for completing each Triumph in these raids:

Mammoth Lakes Film Festival has announced the lineup of its ninth installment, held in-person from May 24-28 at venues throughout the California mountain town. Notably, the opening and closing films will feature stories from transgender individuals around the world.

“Two of the most compelling documentaries we came across this year happened to be transgender stories, highlighting characters living in circumstances that threaten their survival, and we are so thrilled to showcase ‘Queendom’ and ‘Kokomo City’ as our opening and closing spotlight films,” said Paul Sbrizzi, director of festival programming.

Opening film “Queendom,” by Agniia Galdanova, is a window into the life of Gena, a transgender Russian performance artist, and the radical acts that put her life in danger. The closing film “Kokomo City” by D. Smith explores the lives of four Black transgender sex workers as they consider what their existence means within the Black community. Koko Da Doll, who was one of the documentary’s four subjects, was fatally shot in Atlanta last month.

The festival holds five core competitions: the Spotlight Presentation and Narrative & Documentary Features, both with a separate category for international and North American films. These competitions will feature 20 films including the projects “Free Time” by Ryan Martin Brown, “Mad Cats” by Reiki Tsuno, “Mississippi River Styx” by Tim Grant and Andy McMillan and “To Kill A Tiger” by Nisha Kumari Pahuja.

In addition, the festival will feature a short films program showcasing over 80 projects, along with music videos and a screenplay competition. In total, over $40,000 in cash and prizes will be given to winners across 10 different categories, all announced at the festival’s award ceremony on May 28.

Jurors at Mammoth include individuals from entertainment publications, universities and other film festivals.

Sigourney Weaver no doubt dashed the hopes of millions of sci-fi fans as she announced in last week’s issue of Total Film that she has no intention of reprising her iconic role of Ellen Ripley in future Alien instalments.

“There are all kinds of younger actors taking this kind of role. And there was an Alien [film] that I really wanted to do with Neill Blomkamp and we didn’t get to do that, but, you know, that ship has sailed. I’m very happy doing what I’m doing. I’ve put in my time in space!”

Weaver’s remarks come as a new Alien project began filming for Hulu with filmmaker Fede Alvarez at the helm. Fans had hoped that Alien: Romulus might treat us to a cameo from Weaver and mark her return to the series after 26 years away.

However, it seems the actress has lost interest in revisiting her iconic character following the cancellation of Neil Blomkamp’s Alien 5 in 2016. The project would’ve retconned Alien 3 and Resurrection, taking place following the events of 1986’s Aliens and seeing the return of Ellen Ripley and Corporal Dwayne Hicks.

Blomkamp’s project never went further than the director issuing some concept art that got fans very excited. Weaver subsequently confirmed she would return if Blomkamp’s idea went ahead. Ultimately, 20th Century Studios had the final say, and opted instead to green-light 2017’s Alien: Covenant with director Ridley Scott.

Fans have held out hope that Weaver was still on board for a return somewhere down the line, but it seems the actress has drawn a line under revisiting Ellen Ripley once and for all. We sure will miss her.

The writers strike, so far, has not affected production on Amazon series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and HBO’s House of the Dragon, both of which are currently shooting in the UK.

As Deadline has previously reported, scripts also had been completed for HBO’s House of the Dragon, which is currently shooting its second season in London, and productions remains unaffected.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power is in production on Season 2, with 19 days of filming remaining. Scripts and other creative materials were finished well in advance of the strike, so production has not been affected. Rings of Power non-writing executive producers, directors and crew will oversee and complete to wrap.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth — thousands of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings films and the novels.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is led by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay. They are joined by executive producers Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, J.A. Bayona, Belén Atienza, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, Gennifer Hutchison, Bruce Richmond, and Sharon Tal Yguado, and producers Ron Ames and Christopher Newman. Wayne Che Yip is co-executive producer and directs along with J.A. Bayona and Charlotte Brändström.

Hulu is adding a few new channels to its live TV lineup. That includes the local PBS stations that are available across the country, PBS Kids, and the Magnolia Network.

Meanwhile, the Magnolia Network, a home-improvement-focused channel, will join Hulu’s live TV lineup on May 25th. This channel airs shows like Fixer Upper, Beach Cottage Chronicles, and The Lost Kitchen. Other shows from the network, such as Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, Silos Baking Competition, Maine Cabin Masters, and others, will also be available to watch on demand.

Although Hulu already airs a wide variety of channels on its live TV service, bringing PBS to the service builds upon its library of live local options, which includes regional stations powered by ABC, Fox, NBC, and CBS, where users can watch news and sports.

“As more and more households look to digital streaming offerings, this announcement is part of our commitment to meet audiences where they are with the PBS programming they know and love,” Ira Rubenstein, PBS’s chief digital and marketing officer, says in a statement. “We thank Hulu + Live TV for working with us to provide our viewers with more ways to watch programs through their local PBS station.”

If you’re wondering whether “Queen Charlotte” keeps with the “Bridgerton” tradition of including string covers of pop songs, the answer is a resounding yes.

These sonic delights became expected after Season 1 of Shonda Rhimes’ adaptation of Julia Quinn’s “Bridgerton” novels, which are set in the Regency Era marriage market. Rhimes has returned to the royal world for a peek at the Georgian Era and the start of the Great Experiment in the prequel series “Queen Charlotte.” After all, Queen Charlotte made way for a multiracial society in a previously whitewashed London, all because she married the king. Not only does the “Bridgerton” spinoff series “Queen Charlotte,” delve into the queen’s backstory, but just as Charlotte (India Amarteifio) learns to navigate her new status, a young Lady Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas) figures out what it means to hold title and be in the queen’s court. Violet Ledger (Connie Jenkins-Greig) is also coming of age.

“Queen Charlotte” comes with its own set of string pop song covers, all from Black female musicians. Beyoncé’s “Halo” kicks off the series at the end of the first episode. Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You” has been reimagined by a 90-piece orchestra made up of women of color. Several other powerful hits can be heard later on down the line.

Kris Bowers scored the prequel series, just as he did the first two seasons of “Bridgerton.”

Here are all the songs in “Queen Charlotte”:

  • “A Feeling I’ve Never Been” by Kris Bowers – Episode 1
  • “Halo” (Beyoncé Cover) by Brian Chan & Caleb Chan – Episode 1
  • “If I Ain’t Got You” (Alicia Keys Cover) by Vitamin String Quartet – Episode 3
  • “Deja Vu” (Beyoncé Cover) by Audiostation – Episode 4
  • “Run the World” (Beyoncé Cover) by Brian Chan & Caleb Chan – Episode 5
  • “Nobody Gets Me” (SZA Cover) by Brian Chan & Caleb Chan – Episode 6
  • “I Will Always Love You” (Whitney Houston Cover) by Vitamin String Quartet) – Episode 6

Revealing your birth chart can make you feel as exposed as if your Social Security number leaked. Amaarae’s not here to judge—ok, well maybe just a little bit. On “Co-Star,” a new single named after the ubiquitous astrology app, she sniffs out sexual prospects by sign. “Me and her felt like threesomes/Must be Geminis,” she sings with a wink; as far as she’s concerned, the more the merrier. Under the spell of her seductive, airy vocals, you won’t even realize that she read you for filth until you’re home: “Maybe you’re a sag, you nag, you nasty.” Celestial harps transport you heavenward amongst the constellations while sweat, dirt, and hot breaths intermingle on the dancefloor. The breakdown of the Writers Guild of America’s contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers could benefit the documentary industry. Especially those documentary filmmakers with projects seeking distribution.

At least that’s the hope.

Like film and television scribes worried about the survival of screenwriting as a viable profession, hundreds of nonfiction filmmakers with independently made docus are grappling with the streamers’ new distribution landscape, which, for the most part, no longer includes acquiring titles that aren’t commissioned.

If the writers strike lasts for several months, the thought is that not only broadcast networks but also streaming companies will begin to face holes in their narrative content, which could, in turn, lead to the purchase of indie docus to fill the void.

At the Hot Docs film festival in Toronto, documentary producers, programmers and filmmakers are not only celebrating independently made fare but also contemplating the effects the writers strike could have on the nonfiction industry.

“The data shows that when there have been writers strikes, or certainly during COVID, we had an uptick in demand for non-fiction programming,” said Geralyn White Dreyfous, co-founder of doc fund Impact Partners. “You combine the media consolidation, along with cutbacks in staffing and budgets, and it still seems pretty tight. But my hope is that buyers will turn to nonfiction because there are a lot of great films that still haven’t been sold.”

Impact Partners has two films at Hot Docs seeking distribution – Alexandria Bombach’s “It’s Only Life After All,” about the Indigo Girls, and Penny Lane’s “Confessions of a Good Samaritan” about kidney donation.

Following a Hot Docs Industry panel discussion about creative distribution, filmmaker and author Jon Reiss said that while he stands “firmly” with the Writers Guild, he does see potential in the strike for docus.

“Last time a writers strike happened, reality TV came into the forefront,” Reiss said. “Now we have reality TV coming out our ears. So, hopefully, there will be other forms of documentary content that will come (to the forefront) like doc series, which is good for me because I’m actually about to pitch one in about two months.”

Hot Docs Industry programs director, Elizabeth Radshaw, added: “I would be ignoring history to see that past strikes have been beneficial for the documentary community with regards to sales and the return of buyers’ attention to our work. Certainly, given the current market space, that would be very delightful attention that we feel we deserve. We never wish bad upon our wonderful fiction creators, and we want a speedy resolution, but a lot of documentaries and long-form series are out there that deserve to have a profile and a platform.”

But unlike the 2007 writers strike, when networks cut seasons short and aired reruns, streamers have years worth of content in the pipeline along with international shows written by scribes outside the WGA.

“It seems like people are hoping that the writers strike has a similar effect to COVID in giving documentaries and nonfiction more opportunities because of the halt on production for fiction projects,” says documentary producer, and the founder of Motto Pictures, Julie Goldman. “I think there are two key factors which will limit this situation: one is it’s unlikely that the strike will go on for a long time, and the other is that there was time to prepare because no one was taken by surprise (by the strike).”

Goldman is at Hot Docs with two docus, “Love to Love You, Donna Summer” and “The Eternal Memory.” Both films have distribution with HBO and MTV Documentaries, respectively.

“I think there will likely be a programming gap, and that will require the re-shuffling of schedules, which I hope will be an opportunity for the many documentaries that haven’t yet sold in the past year,” Goldman adds. “We have to see how long the strike lasts before we see a shift in the landscape.”

Fair wages and contracts are not only a concern for Hollywood scribes. Doc filmmakers, no matter how successful, often spend their entire careers fighting for budgets that include adequate salaries.

“I am sure most documentary makers would stand in support of writers being paid fair, sustainable wages,” says Oscar-winning producer Joanna Natasegara (“The White Helmets”). “It’s something our community struggles with, too. It would be great if money was spent more equitably in general in the industry, and that would include investment at all levels in many of the beautiful docs emerging this year by bringing them to global audiences that clearly want them.”

Gathr founder and CEO Scott Glosserman, who is at Hot Docs with Oliver Stone’s “Nuclear Now,” isn’t sure if the writers strike will lead to more sales, but he thinks it will lead to more nonfiction production.

“I was writing a script for Paramount in 2007 when the writers strike happened, and I ended up going off and making a documentary called “Truth in Numbers? Everything, According to Wikipedia,” Glosserman said. “Time will tell how it all plays out.”

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian forces launched barrages of drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities on Thursday, after each side blamed the other for explosions at the Kremlin that raised fears of an escalation in the war.

A dozen or so loud explosions and the sound of antiaircraft gunfire rattled the capital, Kyiv, after nightfall on Thursday, the second consecutive night the capital was targeted after Russia accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack in central Moscow, an accusation Ukraine has strongly denied.

At least two drones were spotted over Kyiv, and video shared online showed one being shot down, prompting cheers from watchers below in the Maidan, Kyiv’s central square. Andriy Yermak, a senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed in a statement that a drone had been shot down.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said falling debris caused a small fire near a railroad station, but it had been contained. There was no immediate information about possible casualties.

While Kyiv has come under frequent and often unrelenting bombardment since Russia launched its full-scale invasion more than a year ago, rarely has Russia launched drones at the capital night after night. The air raid alarm on Thursday evening was not nationwide, as is often the case, but focused only on Kyiv.

Explosions also shook Kyiv early Thursday and a regional official said air defenses shot down Russian drones and ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian military’s southern command in Odesa said drones were also shot down there and provided images that suggested that some had the handwritten messages “For Moscow” and “For the Kremlin” on them.

There were no reports of casualties in those incidents. But in the southern region of Kherson, officials raised the death toll from Russian shelling on Wednesday to 23 people, making it one of the deadliest barrages in Ukraine this year.

The United States and Ukraine both said they feared that Russia would seek to intensify attacks after the explosions over the Kremlin on Wednesday, which were apparently caused by drones.

Russia blamed Ukraine for the episode, calling it an assassination attempt on President Vladimir V. Putin, and said it reserved the right to retaliate. Ukraine, which typically maintains deliberate ambiguity over responsibility for attacks inside Russia, categorically denied involvement and accused Moscow of manufacturing the incident as a pretext for further aggression and to stir up public support.

It remained unclear who was responsible for the explosions, which occurred 15 minutes apart. The United States Embassy in Kyiv issued a warning late Wednesday that there was a heightened risk of Russian missile attacks, including in the Ukrainian capital and surrounding area, citing “the recent uptick in strikes across Ukraine and inflammatory rhetoric from Moscow.”

Early on Thursday in Kyiv, three loud booms rattled windows about 2:30 a.m. local time and the police cordoned off what appeared to be debris from a missile or drone shot out of the sky over a central neighborhood. Some nearby windows were shattered, and the smell of smoke hung in the air.

Russian attacked Odesa with at least 15 drones, Ukraine’s southern military command said. The Ukrainians shot down 12, but three got through the air defense network and crashed into dorms for an educational institution. There were no reports of casualties, the Ukrainian military said.

In towns and cities closer to the sprawling front line in eastern and southern Ukraine, there were also reports of widespread bombardments. The damage was being assessed early Thursday morning.

Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the far right group Proud Boys, was convicted along with three other members of the organization for their roles in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The convictions were perhaps the highest profile cases so far brought by the Justice Department. Tarrio was found guilty of seditious conspiracy, which has a sentence of up to 20 years.

According to the Associated Press, Tarrio did not show any emotion as the verdict was read.

Also convicted of seditious conspiracy were Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl. They also were convicted of conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding of Congress on Jan. 6, as well as of destruction of government property.

The jury has been deadlocked on the sedition charge against another defendant, Dominic Pezzola, but he was found guilty of the obstruction and other charges.

The convictions could bolster any case brought against Donald Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is investigating the former president’s role in the attack on the Capitol, as well as his handling of classified information after he left the White House.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which serves as labor representatives for Hollywood’s studios, have released a new statement breaking down their stance on the various sticking points that caused a deal with the Writers Guild of America to fall apart.

In a four-page document, the AMPTP addressed several issues that were raised by the WGA in their pattern of demands, most notably the guild’s proposal for a minimum of six writers on all TV productions with more required depending on the number of episodes.

“If writing needs to be done, writers are hired, but these proposals require the employment of writers whether they’re needed for the creative process or not,” the AMPTP said in the document. “While the WGA has argued that the proposal is necessary to ‘preserv[e] the writers’ room,’ it is in reality a hiring quota that is incompatible with the creative nature of our industry.”

“We don’t agree with applying a one-size-fits-all solution to shows that are unique and different in their approach to creative staffing,” the statement continues. “Some writers are the sole voice of a show and others work with only a small team. The WGA’s proposals would preclude that.”

This summer, 12 celebrities are going where no star has gone before: Mars. Or “Mars.” That’s the premise of Fox’s upcoming unscripted series, “Stars on Mars.” The competition show will premiere on the network Monday, June 5 at 8/7c p.m.

The latest installment in Fox’s lineup of wild reality programming will follow a dozen celebrities as they try to colonize what they’re dubbing Mars. Contestants will include everyone from professional athletes and reality TV staples to entrepreneurs and TV and film actors. Once on “Mars,” these newly minted astronauts will be assigned missions by the one celebrity who’s perfect for this interstellar job, “Star Trek” icon William Shatner.

“Stars on Mars” contestants will be forced to live, eat, sleep and strategize with each other all aboard the same space station. All the while, they will have to endure conditions designed to simulate life on Mars. After the completion of each mission, the celebrities will vote to eliminate one of their crewmembers each week, so prepare for some alliances and betrayals. Only one will claim the title of “brightest star in the galaxy.” But who will it be?

In addition to Shatner, this new reality series will include former professional cyclist Lance Armstrong, comedian Natasha Leggero, former Super Bowl champion Marshawn Lynch, actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon, professional wrestler and UFC champion Ronda Rousey, TV personality and restaurateur Tom Schwartz, sports analyst and professional football player Richard Sherman, singer and songwriter Tinashe, TV personality Porsha Williams Guobadia, entrepreneur Tallulah Willis and actor Ariel Winter.

“Stars on Mars” was created by Chris Culvenor of Eureka Productions, a Fremantle company. Eureka is responsible for projects such as Netflix’s “The Mole,” HBO Max’s “Finding Magic Mike,” Netflix’s “Dating Around,” Discovery’s “It’s the Irwins” and the U.S. version of Fox’s “Farmer Wants a Wife. Culvenor, Paul Franklin, Wes Dening and Eden Gaha serve as executive producers. Charles Wachter will also executive produce while acting as the series’ showrunner.

With Hot Docs’ marquee market event the Forum and its sidebar operations back to live action, and the festival’s 30th anniversary adding a layer of buzzy excitement, docmakers and industry pros from Western Canada are hauling out a bumper crop of adventurous docs for audiences and buyers, and chatting in the real world about new projects with potential Canadian and international partners and funders.

Nine Western Canada-made doc features span Hot Docs’ programs, with stories that go deeper into landscapes and beyond cultural stereotypes.

Kathleen Jayme’s and Asia Youngman’s “I’m Just Here for the Riot” (ESPN 30 for 30), about violence that erupted after the Vancouver Canucks’ loss of the Stanley Cup final in 2011, is one of three titles world-premiering in the Canadian Spectrum competition.

“The riot was a story that no one had ever really talked about,” said Youngman, who’s currently working on a film about the first Indigenous woman to compete in Japan for professional wrestling. “We found out Vancouver was the only city in North America that rioted because of a loss of a game—it was like a black cloud and I think people were ashamed.”

“It’s known as the ‘first smartphone riot’ and for a while it was the most documented riot in history,” added Jayme, whose “The Grizzlie Truth” had a theatrical run earlier this year. “So a really big part of the development phase was sourcing archival footage from people who were there, and then later we interviewed 24 people.”

Also world-premiering in Canadian Spectrum, Jean-Philippe Marquis’ “Silvicola” frontlines the voices and cinematic surroundings of forestry workers in Canada’s Pacific Northwest, and Francois-Xavier De Ruydts’ “Subterraneans” follows hobbyist cavers striving to break records for the longest and deepest caves in Canada.

In “The Lebanese Burger Mafia,” world-premiering in World Showcase, director and award-winning journo Omar Mouallem navigates rural Alberta to track the origins of the rogue burger chain that he grew up in. Back Road Productions has worldwide sales and distribution rights.

“The Lebanese Burger Mafia”

Cam Christiansen’s “Echo of Everything,” world-premiering in Artscapes, mingles animation, dance, archive and interviews in a boundary-busting exploration of his personal relationship with music.

SXSW buzz film “Satan Wants You,” from Sean Horlor and Steve J. Adams (their “Someone Like Me” won Hot Docs’ 2021 audience award), explores the truths and lasting legacy of the bestselling memoir by a Victoria psychiatrist and his former patient that ignited the 1980s Satanic Panic. International sales agent is Cargo Film & Releasing.

Banchi Hanuse’s “Aitamaako’tamisskapi Natosi: Before the Sun,” winner of the Big Sky Award at Montana’s 2023 Big Sky Documentary Festival, follows a Siksika woman preparing to make history by riding in the men’s Indian relay competition at the Calgary Stampede.

Terra Long’s “Feet in Water, Head on Fire,” which screened at the True/False and First Look festivals, is an experimental portrait of the people who tend to the indigenous palm trees that grow along the San Andreas Fault.

On the industry side, the British Columbia branch of the Canadian Media Producers’ Association brought an official delegation of seven doc producers to Hot Docs. “It’s a great year to re-engage,” the branch’s managing vice-president Tracey Friesen told Variety last week. “The B.C. documentary community is tight and collaborative, especially with the active presence of the Documentary Organization of Canada’s British Columbia, Yukon, and Northwest Territories chapter.”

Friesen added that the appointment in February of Knowledge Network’s new president and CEO Michelle van Beusekom — a former executive director of the National Film Board’s (NFB) English language production studios — and the B.C. government’s April 11 announcement of a three-year Can. $15.9 million injection into Creative BC’s domestic motion picture fund are welcome boosts. “This will translate into more development and production investment for B.C.’s documentary producers.”

Like its neighbor to the West, Alberta is a popular destination for U.S. film and TV production (HBO’s “The Last of Us” being the largest to date), and its service production community has a “symbiotic relationship” with the documentary, Indigenous, and other film networks, bolstering the Alberta industry as a whole, Edmonton producer and 2023 Don Haig Award winner Bonnie Thompson, recently told Variety.

The province’s recently released budget increases the no-cap Film and Television Tax Credit by $100 million, bringing the total to $335 million over the next three years, and doubles funding of the Alberta Made Screen Industries Program, which offers grants to productions with budgets of up to $499,999.

“We’re hoping it will grow,” said Thompson, who serves on the board of the Alberta Media Production Industry Association. “Alberta’s small budget grant is limited and a huge competition because many documentaries are in the 250,000 to 500,000 range.” Thompson has a long association with Tasha Hubbard, whose latest doc, “Singing Back the Buffalo,” is now in post, and whose “We Will Stand Up” opened Hot Docs, and won its Best Canadian Feature award in 2019. Thompson also produced “Echo of Everything.”

Both filmmakers and producers say telecommunications technology company Telus has become the most important incubator of new talent in Western Canada. Run by a four-person team, the Telus Originals program has been supporting local social-impact documentary productions in 15 British Columbia and Alberta communities since 2014. To fulfill its CRTC conditions of license, Telus, which is not a broadcaster, provides funding from $30,000 to $250,000, depending on project scope, and allows creators to retain copyright and sell their docs after they’re uploaded to Telus’ SVOD platform.

“It is critical to have this type of funding for emerging, beginner, and mid-level creators,” said Michael Grand, who will producing Haida filmmaker Patrick Shannon’s basketball doc “Saints & Warriors,” one of five projects recently selected for Hot Docs Incubator, and is here with B.C. delegate as a producer on both “Satan” and “Riot.”

“Telus found a niche that wasn’t being served and developed a way to fund a lot more projects,” Grand explained. “Kat (Jayme) gave me a shot to produce her 2018 film ‘Finding Big Country’ after she got Telus funding, which started me on this track. This kind of support is a stepladder that allows you to make your proof of concept and get it to a really good place so you will be taken seriously in those bigger rooms.”

Christina Applegate Sexualized Teen Affects Watching Herself

Motivational spirit and talk-show host Iyanla Vanzant is telling women to recalibrate their standards for men after she recently asked a “Real Housewife” whether she would go out with a bus driver.

In a viral clip, Vanzant last week asked “The Grio” host Eboni K. Wiliams, the first Black cast member of Bravo’s “Real Housewives of New York City” franchise, if she would date a bus driver after Williams shared that she felt it necessary to exude “masculine energy.”

“If he owns the bus. If he owns it. If he owns the bus, Iyanla,” Williams replied after a moment of hesitation.

Vanzant, who was discussing modern women and femininity with the lawyer-turned-reality star, immediately stopped Williams and said that therein lay the problem, which catalyzed a backlash to Williams’ remarks and the debate in general. (The Bravo star responded Tuesday, but we’ll get to that later.)

“Because the standards and requisites — and I’m not talking about him laying on the sofa playing video games all day — but the standards and the criteria that we use to measure men is off for who we are as women and who they are in this society,” Vanzant said.

“I would date a bus driver if he loved driving the bus. If he was a man of integrity. If he was good to his mama. If he treated me well, I would date a bus driver. But we think that it’s another human being’s responsibility to give us what we need, instead of us building together.”

Vanzant had previously said that women were being trained to be men in skirts and told Williams that she “could build with a bus driver.”

“I’d have a little stash over on the side and my prenup but I can build with a bus driver,” she added.

She also said that the criteria women look for in today’s reality keeps them “unhappy,” “angry” and “imbalanced.”

“And then when the men show up, we want to beat ‘em up because they’re not living up to our standards and criteria. And it’s not working, beloved,” she said, reasoning that it’s not bad or wrong to have those standards but that it was “obsolete” and “we have to come up with a new way of being.”

“I don’t believe in carrying a man. A man has to do for himself,” she concluded in the clip.

While many agreed with Vanzant that a person’s character should be the priority, some also sided with Williams, who was torn apart on social media for putting down Black men and blue-collar work. According to Essence, the conversation highlighted the protracted debate about Black women being expected to settle or date below their educational status or income, while women of other races are often encouraged to seek higher-earning partners who can provide for them. Williams’ “Grio” co-host Marc Lamont Hill also said that “we shouldn’t define people by their labor” but argued both sides.

The self-proclaimed professional disruptor issued a response Tuesday on “The Grio.” She fired back at the so-called backlash and criticism she received on social media over her remarks and said that she was “completely unfazed.” She added that she had been commenting on “ownership,” Black enterprise and entrepreneurship and that her critics who focused on monetary matters “made up” the rest.

“So out of the 50,000-plus comments posted on social, I only saw a handful that even considered the possibility of a bus owner being a more aspirational position and recognizing that I am actually speaking and pouring into the ascension of Black men when I said what I said,” the “Bet on Black” and “Pretty Powerful” author said. “But no, some of y’all were too busy naming and shaming me personally — and Black women in general — as undesirable, gold-diggers and much worse.”

The former “View” guest host said she suspected that those were likely “the same men bringing home Cs and Ds on your report cards only to be coddled by parents that said, ‘Well, that’s OK, as long as you’re doing your best.’”

“Well, listen, I love and believe in the excellence of Black men, so no, my dear, Cs and Ds or any other form of mediocrity is not OK,” she argued. “No, I will not create a soft place for you or anybody that I love to fall comfortably into the bigotry of low expectations.”

She reiterated that “there’s absolutely nothing wrong with driving a bus,” adding that her mother drove one for years, but pushed back on the perception that being average is being good enough for embattled Black Americans.

“But could it be that Black America has been sold a narrative of average, regular and typical being good enough for us? Hmm, well, see, that’s called white supremacy, and in this case, it takes the form of conditioning Black Americans to happily accept being a permanent American underclass,” she continued. “But see, because I know the truth about Black folk in America, average will not or ever be good enough for me. And the gag is, I don’t think it’s good enough for you either.”

But Williams’ response wasn’t convincing for some observers. The comments section of her Instagram post featuring her response quickly filled up with new detractors, many of whom were “vexed” anew.

“My daddy drove a bus but my daddy was far from average. And he certainly didn’t drive a bus because he wasn’t ambitious enough to want to do better or bought into the ‘soft bigotry of low expectations’ and he’d certainly never quite George Bush to talk down in Black working-class people. This is so disappointing. Date who you want. Keep Black folks trying to make it out of it,” commented New York Times columnist and “1619 Project” creator Nikole Hannah-Jones. “Oh, wow. Just no. No.”

“Listen if you are a lawyer went to college and is extremely educated it’s highly unlikely you would be interested in someone who drives a bus and isn’t educated,” wrote Bravo’s “Millionaire Matchmaker” alum Patti Stanger. “Maybe if he were driving to further his career like he’s in med school. But at this time in your life as you get older women want to date up not down! Nothing wrong with saying What you want. No one should be shamed for that! Chemistry is one thing but if compatibility/lifestyle isn’t similar it usually doesn’t work long term!”

Meanwhile, Vanzant addressed the debate more lightheartedly on Instagram Stories.

“would a bus driver date me with this big ole white gray hair hanging off my chin,” Vanzant quipped in a Wednesday clip. “I’m talking about dating a bus driver, [I can’t] date anybody with this!”

And yes, she proceeded to find tweezers to pluck the hair.

According to a new rumor, Captain America: New World Order is about to get a name change.

Set to release May 4, 2024, Captain America 4 will be the MCU‘s fourth Captain America film and the first headlined by Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

With Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross confirmed to be the MCU’s President of the United States and Tim Blake Nelson’s “The Leader” serving as the film’s reported villain, the film’s title sparked considerable fan speculation.

But now, new claims suggest real-world political leaders and events have Marvel Studios considering a new title for its own political thriller.

New Title for Captain America 4?

When industry scooper @CanWeGetToast was asked on Twitter whether Captain America 4, currently subtitled New World Order, is bound for a new title, the account responded with a simple confirmation: “Yes it is.”

While some online have speculated the title swap is due to the ongoing WGA writer’s strike, the account put those theories to rest by tweeting:

“The Writer’s Strike has nothing to do with ‘Captain America: New World Order’s’ name change”

This supports a now-deleted Instagram post from March 21 reporting a title change since “New World Order” refers to actual geopolitical events involving Russia and China.

Instagram

Captain America’s Clash With Real-World Facts

If this rumor is true, it wouldn’t be the first time Marvel Studios had to make a change due to real-world events, nor would is it the first involving Sam Wilson’s Cap.

Reportedly, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ was forced to remove a virus plotline following the outbreak of the pandemic.

It’s also suspected that Secret Invasion‘s lengthy reshoots were due to scenes originally being set in Russia, which is now locked in an ongoing war with Ukraine.

Given the circumstances, it’s tough to say when Marvel Studios will announce the potential title change.

While July’s San Diego Comic-Con is a possibility, the sensitive nature surrounding the change may be problematic, and Marvel may want to disassociate itself from the name sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, it will be interesting to see what Captain America 4‘s new title will be and whether it will shed new light on this future Phase 5 film.

Captain America 4 is set to arrive in theaters on May 4, 2024.

The animated Justice League: Warworld movie nabs an R-rating. The upcoming film will be the first focused on the Justice League in DC’s current Tomorrowverse continuity. The film brings back actors from previous Tomorrowverse projects. Justice League: Warworld‘s cast includes DC’s Trinity, with Darren Criss as Superman, Jensen Ackles as Batman, and Stana Katic as Wonder Woman. The movie is set to premiere in 2023, although no date has been confirmed so far.

Bloody Disgusting first reported the news that Justice League: Warworld received an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association. According to the MPA, the reason given for the R-rating was “some bloody violence.” Justice League: Warworld‘s R-rating is not the first in DC’s Tomorrowverse. Ackles’ Batman: The Long Halloween – Part 2 was also rated R.

Why Justice League: Warworld Being Rated R Makes Sense

Many Justice League: Warworld story details have yet to be revealed; however, the movie will focus on the comic book storyline that saw DC’s heroes sent to the alien mobile planet known as Warworld. In the comics, Warworld is a hyper-violent planet that is home to the universe’s worst killers. Gladiatorial combats are Warworld’s favorite practice, with fights always ending up bloody, which justifies Justice League: Warworld‘s R-rating.

Warworld is controlled by the brutal villain Mongul, with actor Robin Atkin Downes playing the powerful alien in the animated movie. Mongul is going to be a formidable foe to the Tomorrowverse heroes, with the alien most likely the one who teleported Batman and Superman to Warworld at the end of the latest Tomorrowverse release, Legion of Super-Heroes.

Justice League: Warworld will see the heroes have to band together with Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and more as they try to free the innocents who are governed by Mongul’s regime on the planet. The Tomorrowverse heroes will leave the conflict as the newly founded Justice League, with the upcoming Justice League: Warworld animated film likely only the first for the team in the new DC animated continuity.

Welcome to Fiscal Spotlight, a special monthly round up of projects—at all stages of production—working their way through Film Independent’s Fiscal Sponsorship pipeline.

***

The next two months are chockablock full of opportunities to reflect back on our parents and the effect they continue to assert on our steadily unfolding lives, with US Mothers Day looming next weekend and Fathers Day lurking close behind, in June. Sometimes the legacies our families leave us are as simple as the stubborn genetic predisposition for a pronounced front-tooth gap (your humble blogger) or as grand as the stewardship of a vast media empire (the Roys and/or Murdochs). And sometimes, what we inherit from our mothers and fathers is generational trauma, knotty and bone-deep.

Take the three projects we’re highlighting in this month’s Fiscal Sponsorship column, which in three very different ways form their narratives around the difficult choices made by the filmmakers’ parents and how those decisions continue to reverberate, informing and impacting the storytellers’ fundamental sense of identity. These are journeys of self-discovery but also of geography: Vietnam. America. Prison.

All three projects are supported by Film Independent’s Fiscal Sponsorship program, which enables filmmakers to solicit tax-deductible donations and seek organizational grants in partnership with Film Independent. Here’s how:

March’s featured projects are I Forgive You for Dying, You Don’t Know My Name and The Empathizer. Read on to learn more about each project and how to support…

I FORGIVE YOU FOR DYING

Project type: Documentary Feature

Project status: Development

Writer/Director/Producer: Mary Bronaugh

Producer: Brendan Bennett

Executive Producer: Jacqueline Lundquist

About the project: I Forgive You for Dying is a feature documentary that explores the psychology of childhood trauma through one daughter’s brave journey to forgive her father, who died fighting in the Vietnam War. Using a combination of beautiful archival film, innovative sketch-style animation, and fascinating discussions with experts, the film uses one woman’s true story to reveal profound breakthroughs in child psychology and mental health. When Don Lundquist is called to fight in the Vietnam War, he must leave his three year-old daughter Jacqueline at home without a father. After returning only a year later, news arrives that Don has suddenly died of a massive heart attack. Young Jacqueline is left feeling confused and overwhelmed. Instead of feeling grief at his passing, she feels abandoned by him. For the next 30 years, Jacqueline refuses to acknowledge she ever had a father… Until she becomes pregnant with her own child. Based on the book Letters from the Battlefield, written by the real-life Jacqueline and Don Lundquist, I Forgive You for Dying is a captivating, father-daughter drama that turns traditional documentary styles on their head.

YOU DON’T KNOW MY NAME

Project type: Documentary Feature

Project status: Production

Writer/Director/Producer: Tommy Franklin

Producer: Natalie Pattillo

Director of Photography: Justin Jones

About the project: After being separated from his incarcerated mother at birth, Tommy Franklin searches for her identity while uncovering deep ancestral bloodlines. As he gets closer to this life-altering truth, he must navigate his way through systems designed to keep him in the dark. Tommy is a formerly incarcerated filmmaker living in his imagination, dreaming of what his birth mother may be like. Erica Gerrity leads the search for Tommy’s birth mom. Erica has worked with incarcerated mothers and their children for the past 20 years, devoting her time to creating better healthcare outcomes for people birthing behind bars and lobbying for anti-shackling legislation across the country. Tommy joins a community of formerly incarcerated mothers and prison doulas fighting to end prison birth in America. Tommy is unsure how long he can endure his search if he runs into too many dead ends. Is Tommy’s mother alive? Does she want to meet him? Do they finally meet? He thought he was ready for the truth, but fear and doubt seeped into the cracks of a treacherous emotional waiting game. But he never wants to live life as the version of himself that gives up the search. The miracle of finding out who his mother is could be the light emerging from his greatest shadow.

THE EMPATHIZER

Project type: Documentary Short

Project status: Post-Production

Co-Director/Producer: Fred Le

Co-Director/Cinematographer: Bret Hamilton

Executive Producer: King Kimbit

Editor: Linh Tran

About the project: Between 1975 and 1995, around 2 million Vietnamese fled the country. In 2015, there were a reported 12,000 Việt Kiều (overseas-born Vietnamese) who “returned” to the former capital of Saigon, with hundreds more migrating every year seeking opportunity, escape or info about their heritage. Shot over two weeks in Saigon and Hanoi, The Empathizer is a half-hour documentary featuring over twenty millennial-aged Việt Kiều sharing their journeys back to Vietnam and the ripples that their reverse immigration may have caused among their families. The project takes a look at the effects of wartime trauma through the eyes of the children of refugees, a generation removed from the events which led to their parents’ escape from Vietnam yet deeply shaped by the circumstances of their birth.

WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes was the main event at WrestleMania 39, and he also stars in a new commercial promoting WWE SuperCard as well as being one of the most popular playable wrestlers in WWE 2K23.

“The American Nightmare” was just named the number one draft pick to WWE Monday Night RAW, which puts him in a prime spot to continue his pursuit of the World Heavyweight Championship. But Cody is also a die-hard Star Trek fan who recently attended the world premiere of Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Related: WWE 2K23 Review: More, More, MORE!

Screen Rant had the pleasure of interviewing Cody Rhodes about what’s new with WWE SuperCard season 9, playing as himself in WWE 2K23, how he’s regrouping after his loss to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39, and his thoughts on Star Trek: Picard season 3 as well as what his dream Star Trek role would be.

Cody Rhodes Talks WWE SuperCard, WWE 2K23 & Star Trek: Picard Season 3

Screen Rant: Cody, congrats on being the number one draft pick for Monday Night RAW!

Cody Rhodes: That’s a pretty wild thing to hear. I was hoping I’d go number one, right? You want to go number one overall, but just as long as you can attach ‘one’ to yourself, that’s a special feeling. Also, congrats on that really sweet Ten Forward shirt you have. That’s what you’ve got on, right?

Thanks, man. I’m surprised we didn’t get you one at the Picard premiere.

Cody Rhodes: Aw yeah. That’s a good, good shirt, I’ll tell you. I don’t know if you’ve ever eaten at… There’s a restaurant at Epcot called Space 220. Space 220 is the closest thing I’ve ever been to an actual Ten Forward. Because it’s just a big space just like 10 Forward. It’s just like a big out into space. And it’s just the closest I’ve ever been to a real-life Ten Forward.

I don’t want to make you jealous, but I’ve actually eaten at the real Ten Forward. Last year, they took the Ten Forward set from season 2, and they put it in LA. I got to eat at the captain’s table with my friends, and we actually had like a 10-course meal. It was amazing.

Cody Rhodes: That’s pretty baller. I love that.

All right, let’s get some wrestling business going here. We’re here to talk about WWE SuperCard, which is in its 9th successful season. And there was a new update just released on April 24. Tell us what’s new with SuperCard, Cody.

Cody Rhodes: Like you mentioned, the ninth anniversary of SuperCard. They just had the big update. There’s a big surprise, I believe, coming in the month of May or June. I know for me, it’s become knowledge that I have… what is the number? 33! 33 variations of cards throughout my [career]. Basically, a catalog of everything that I’ve done in my career, the different versions of me, which I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing to see yourself, how you’ve painted yourself so differently over the years. But it’s definitely helpful for me in terms of visually remembering where I was when. When that moment occurred.

It’s a really active fan base. Man, I think that’s what I like about it. Again, ninth anniversary, continuing, I’d say SuperCard [is] a little ahead of the curve in a sense, that a lot of whether it be our figures or whether it be the 2K series, some things we campaign for, and we push for, and then, ultimately, the fan service element of it, we get them. I’ve noticed with SuperCard they kind of sneak things in, in a way. That they’re sometimes the first of in party of things that people want, which is just really what’s encouraging. If you’re just now jumping into SuperCard, it’s not just an active and large community that’s still playing and growing, playing this game, but also your developers and your team really are trying to give people the utmost maximum experience just dominating that card space.

Speaking of video game dominance, WWE 2K23, which is 25% off PlayStation right now, it’s the highest-rated game in the franchise’s history. What’s cool and new with 2K23?

Cody Rhodes: Isn’t it? I think it’s been 14 years since my first appearance in 2K game. For it to be the highest-rated in the series is the absolute best. I know for me, I was very hands-on in terms of the character model. “The American Nightmare ” is a brand that was developed outside of WWE, and WWE being able to just take it. And when they take something that’s yours, and you care about [it], and they’re going to put it out there. The WWE has the largest audience as far as sports entertainment in the world. There’s always a nature of trepidation about “Will they do it right? Will they do it justice?” And my gosh, they’ve been so… loving really is the way to put it… towards my character model, towards the things that I do in the ring, the motion capture itself. I’m very proud.

It took me a while because I didn’t want to be DLC. When I first came back, I really wanted to take the time to get it right. They wanted to take the time to get it right. And they did. And for me, I’ve made it no secret. It’s a goal of mine to earn my way onto the cover of that game. Not unlike Madden and these other great sports and sports entertainment franchises, that actually does mean a lot to the roster as to who’s the cover model. And I want to earn my way onto it. John [Cena] got it this year, and no one deserves it more. But more milestones to come.

I’m really just blessed to reconnect with 2K and the game has been so well received. He was at WrestleMania, Brodie Lee Jr. He loves 2K, loves it. And I was really glad he could play with me — actually play with me versus just the content creation of me. And that certainly made my day. So I’m looking forward to what we do next.

I think we all kind of wonder: when you play 2K23, do you play as yourself?

Cody Rhodes: Yeah! I don’t know, you either have to make the distinction that you never play as yourself, you’ll never do it, that’s ridiculous. Or you just fully go all in and have that pride, and to a degree, that ego. I’ve got enough of an ego that I want to play as myself. I’ve got enough of an ego that I want to know what my score was, and make sure it was at least within the A range, you know, on an old-school chart, essentially. Yeah, no, I’m playing as myself, and I’m not playing as anybody else.

We are a month removed from WrestleMania 39. I was watching at home along with millions of others, we all shared the same heartbreak in your main event against Roman Reigns. I need to ask you, sir, what happened?

Cody Rhodes: I wanted to just simply reply, “Well, I lost.” I’ve been very careful. I know there’s a lot of fans kind of screaming for me to talk about the nature of the loss. And that’s not really in my character to break down how it went down. Because we all saw it. We all saw what happened. I don’t need to be on TV whining about it. It still, at the end of the day, doesn’t change the results. I think in years of WrestleMania it’s the most obvious thing ever. Myself confident that it would happen. My family confident it would happen. A global wrestling fandom confident that it would happen. And that’s the nature of Roman Reigns, and the nature of the industry is you can’t be that confident. Nothing is ever that obvious.

I don’t have a lot of time to grieve on it because I jumped right into something incredibly challenging. Again, incredibly challenging underscores the situation with Brock Lesnar. But let’s just say incredibly challenging for now. And in addition to that, my goal doesn’t change. It doesn’t change. I think Roman had mentioned a few nights before Wrestlemania about what I would do when adversity strikes, and what I had done previously in his eyes, and I think this is kind of that time in your life when you have to, in every sense of it, within the fiction and within the reality, you have to step up and meet the adversity differently than perhaps you ever had before. A lot of challenges here, Brock Lesnar being the pressing and current most important challenge.

But for me, my goal hasn’t changed. What didn’t happen at WrestleMania 39 Is is not something that I look at and say it’ll never happen. To me, even more now than ever, it has to happen. It’s just a matter of when.

Cody Rhodes Roman Reigns WrestleMania

That actually leads into my next question, because I was totally caught up with hashtag #FinishTheStory. Does #FinishTheStory mean the same thing? Has it changed a little bit?

Cody Rhodes: No, #FinishTheStory… It’s been nice to kind of clear that up in a sense, that finishing the story, for me, it revolves around one of the titles that Roman has on his shoulders. The title that was linked to the original WWWF in the 1970s that would become the championship belt we grew up with, the winged eagle itself, all that beautiful within the 80s and 90s. The WWE Championship and now it’s the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. But it’s still linked to that very title, and that is Finishing the Story.

And it doesn’t mean there won’t be other stories. It’s a beautiful thing. Again, we were talking about SuperCard and the amount of variations and different stories just within this game representing my career. This is going to be a very interesting year. But for me, #FinishTheStory means the same thing.

Last week, Triple H introduced the new World Heavyweight Championship. What are your thoughts on that? I guess it would be an interesting challenge, you were just talking about the legacy of the original WWF title, to build a new world title legacy from scratch.

Cody Rhodes: I think it’s incredibly difficult in terms of… you can’t just say that something is the most important thing, and the fans and the locker room just accept it. What makes it the most important thing is the type of competition that takes place over it. So with the new championship, and as a big fan of just the design of belts and how they look, it’s an absolutely gorgeous, hunking piece of metal, with all these little nods and almost Easter eggs towards older titles in the past.

I think how it’s laid out, in a sense of who’s competing for it and who’s competing for the lead spot on Monday Night RAW, me having just been drafted to Monday Night RAW, it’s definitely within my cross-hairs. It doesn’t take away from any story that’s wanting to be finished or having been told, but by no means is anyone in the locker room looking down on it. And if anything, everyone’s looking up at it, because you want to be the lead dog on Monday Night RAW.

I cannot let you go without talking about Star Trek. You can imagine how happy I was to meet you at the Picard premiere and to find that you’re a Trekkie, a real Trekkie who really knows his stuff. Wow, what did you think of the Picard finale?

Cody Rhodes: This was such a wild time for me because so many things are happening that I’m a big fan of. So, Picard final season, Mando’s out there rockin’ a season, Tears of the Kingdom is coming out this month. There’s all this stuff happening that’s very much like I have to sit down and take in. I loved, absolutely loved Picard in terms of its final season. The visit to – again, spoiler spoiler – the visit to the old bridge with the crew. This kind of, I don’t know what you would call it, this collection of Datas being the man that was Data. A peaceful Worf. It’s just really, it was special. It really was. Patrick Stewart is, I mean, he’s the captain’s captain, really, truly, with all the flaws and everything.

Again, I won’t get too far into it, spoiler wise, but the enemies that were chosen, the rogues that were chosen for Picard. really made me excited. As a big-time Deep Space Nine fan, really, really made me excited. And then, of course, I think they wrapped it up in a great way. However, they wrapped it up in a great way but also, there’s so many things you could take. So many places you could go.

Strange New Worlds is getting ready to rock. Lower Decks, don’t sleep on Lower Decks. Lower taxes is a dang good piece of Trek content too. But as the eternal pessimist knowing that things come and go. I’m just happy we’re living in this world where so much Trek is happening for me to discuss, watch in real-time, and really jump aboard because all the Trek shows, from TNG, TOS, all of them, I never saw them in real-time. I went back and binged them and became this Trek fan later. So now to be able to talk about it in real-time with my friends who are into the Trek stuff, that’s really cool.

Picard‘s finale set up such cool stuff that could happen that they want to call Star Trek: Legacy. You were part of a group called The Legacy with Randy Orton. It seems to me it would be a natural fit for Cody Rhodes to appear in Star Trek: Legacy and merge the Rhodes legacy with Star Trek.

Cody Rhodes: It’s funny, my schedule is what it is as far as WWE is concerned. And my big rule is when [I’m] in a TV or film project, I still have to be able to make my live events and make TV, which is a tall order for a lot of projects. But I can tell you, my agent in LA [knows] there’s one thing that’s kind of on the alerts, on the notifications, is when it comes to Trek, I’ll take anything. [They] can put me in a whole Gorn outfit where you don’t even know it’s me, I’ll take it. You can put me in the engine room, I’ll take it. I can literally just do something with my face, some sort of recognition on the bridge, Ensign, whatever. I’ll take it. Just to don the uniform would be really, really cool.

That’d be amazing. I would love to see it. You know, Dwayne Johnson was in Star Trek: Voyager back in the day.

Cody Rhodes: It’s such a wild episode that he’s in, too. And then Big Show was in Enterprise as well. There’s already a link with wrestling and Trek. So hopefully, it’s something that can happen. I’d give it my full attention for sure.

Drew Barrymore is stepping down as host of this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, in a show of support and solidarity to the striking Writers Guild members. But as a sign of good faith to MTV, Barrymore has also agreed to return and host next year’s edition of the kudocast instead.

Sunday night’s MTV Movie & TV Awards will still continue, but will now go hostless. The state of the show is still evolving day-by-day, as producers pivot to their strike contingency plans and wait and see who among their presenters, nominees and guests are still willing and able to appear on the telecast. As another nod to the evolving news, there will no longer be a red carpet or talent interviews before the show.

“I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” Barrymore said in a statement. “Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me. I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with. And I can’t wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.”

Barrymore won’t be at the live event, but she may still be seen on this Sunday’s show: As host, she had already participated in several pre-taped short films for the telecast — and those timely pieces are still expected to air.

“Drew, without question, she’s been incredible. It’s hard to imagine that we’ve ever had a better experience with a host,” said Bruce Gillmer, the president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, and an executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards. “She’s more of a partner really, she’s in it every day, just super passionate and super engaged and creative. She even bought some of her own team along for the journey. So when this all reared its head, we started to prepare for what could be. She is not surprisingly, standing in solidarity with the writers, which we have full respect for. She has our full support.

“So she’s not going to be with us live in the house for the show and we will essentially be going hostless,” he added. “The silver lining in all of this is that we really formed a partnership almost a family-like atmosphere. So we see this as a shift in direction, but also a pause for the initial plan, which we’ve all agreed and she’s accepted to continue as our host in 2024.”

Because the situation is fluid, Gillmer said he’s still waiting word on which presenters and nominees might still attend. That includes “The White Lotus” star Jennifer Coolidge, who is slated to receive the ‘Comedic Genius’ award. Gillmer said producers are also still ironing out how the show will open — although as of now, it could be a pre-tape bit featuring Barrymore. After that, the show plans to find a way to explain what is happening with the strike and why the show looks a bit different than originally planned.

But Gillmer said that the show won’t dwell on that, and instead still plans “on delivering for the fans. The exclusive sneak peeks of the big films that are to be released. We still have a live performance. We still have the award sequences, although those are the elements that are very unpredictable — because clearly we don’t know which talent will feel comfortable. A lot of them won’t,” he said.

“But we have a plan, since the award show is fan-voted, we want to honor the fans’ participation and also honor the talent that earn these awards,” he added. “So we’ll be giving the awards away. We’re working on a plan on how to do that without the traditional presentation involved, should the talent or some of the talent not show. We’ve got backups to our backups. And we’re planning on keeping as many of the signature elements of the show intact. We will have a live audience and it will still be a live event. Different, with more pre-taped packages and so forth, which are scalable, but it’ll still have that live event feel.”

Gilmmer said the show will include some pre taped acceptance speeches for winners, but the producers are also treading lightly in working with talent as they decide whether to still attend. The originally announced list of presenters included Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Burd (“Lil Dicky”), Gal Gadot, Rodrigo Santoro and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Also “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback; “Yellowjackets” stars Courtney Eaton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Liv Hewson, Samantha Hanratty, Sophie Nélisse and Sophie Thatcher; and “Joy Ride” stars Ashley Park, Sabrina Wu, Sherry Cola and Stephanie Hsu.

Also originally set to appear: Ayo Edebiri, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber and Rachel Sennott (“Bottoms”); Camila Morrone, Riley Keough, Sam Claflin and Suki Waterhouse (“Daisy Jones & The Six”); Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King (“The Little Mermaid”).

“We’re going to be super respectful of the talents’ decisions to either be involved in pre tapes, show up or not show up, whatever they decide,” he said. “We’ve got backup plans and coverage just in case, so I guess the short answer is, I’m not sure yet… There’s also athletes and celebrity chefs and all kinds of other talent that are not squarely affected. So we’ll be going down that road. We will be looking for some live talent in the room to help tell the story, but not host segments per se. We also have a very charismatic VO artist with us, so stay tuned. It’s all unfolding in real time.”

The MTV Movie & TV Awards has faced numerous changes in recent years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 show, scheduled for that spring soon after the outbreak, was moved to fall that year — and then scrapped all together, replaced with a pre-taped clip show with some awards. The show returned in 2021 and 2022, but with COVID-mandated limitations.

“We were certainly one of the first with the VMAs in the early days of COVID,” Gilmmer noted. “It was equally as intense, but you also had the added complexity of health. I’m not going to dodge the fact that we have a little bit of PTSD. But we do have the best team, and Drew and her team are part of this. But yeah, we’re battle tested.”

Gillmer said he’s still confident this show will still be entertaining for fans. “We’ve got acceptances from from big talent already, and then the short films are incredible. They’re so funny, and entertaining and emotional, and you know, they’re there. There’s big and loud and impactful as ever, so those will be there. The audience always loves the sneak peeks for the biggest movies that are about to be released. They can only see those sneak peeks on on this award show. And we’re going to give awards away that they voted on for the signature categories, like best kiss, villain flight, all that. Hopefully we figured out a way to celebrate some of the year’s biggest moments and WTF moments.”

INT. BASEMENT OFFICE – RAINDANCE FILM SCHOOL – NIGHT

The WRITER (early 50s), balding, could be in better shape but he’s a slave to his work and not the gym. Hunched over his laptop the Writer stares at a blank screen. Thinking. Suddenly a flurry of TYPING.

INSERT COMPUTER SCREEN:

INT. BASEMENT OFFICE – RAINDANCE FILM SCHOOL – NIGHT

BACK TO: The Writer YAWNING.

THE WRITER (V.O.)
Nothing like a looming deadline
to help get things done. Everything
except hitting that looming deadline.
Cleaning. I tend to clean a lot
when I have a deadline. My flat and
office have never been so clean
The kitchen too. It wasn’t even
my kitchen.

The Writer checks his watch. It’s 8.15pm. Rubs his eyes.

THE WRITER (V.O.)
I’d been tasked with writing a review
of Christopher Riley’s formidable
guide script format and style called
The Hollywood Standard.
I was struggling. How could I write this
review in an interesting way?
What could I say that hasn’t already been
said by way more talented people than me?
What I can say is this book is the bible
and a must-buy for screenwriters of all
levels. Not only does Riley write with
authority about the basics of script
formatting, but he also gives us a vital
chapter on ‘Deadly Mistakes to Avoid’ while
writing one’s screenplay.
I mean, you may have the greatest story
known to humanity, but if you don’t
write with clarity, accuracy and follow
the basic rules, then those hard-to-impress
studio script readers will throw your
hard work and dreams to the proverbial pyre!

The Writer’s mobile phone BUZZES with a text.

Looks at his phone. Eyes roll.

Pushes the phone away.

  THE WRITER (V.O.)
Moreover, Riley brilliantly
backs up reems of fine advice, with
examples of classic scriptwriting by
the likes of Vince Gilligan, Guillermo
Del Toro, Jordan Peele, and the Coen
Brothers.

The Writer’s mobile phone VIBRATES from a call.

THE WRITER
(to the PHONE)
Not now!
(won’t go away, so answers)
Yes. . . sorry. I’m tired.
Got stuck here writing this
book review.
(listens)
Soon. . . I know I work too hard.
(listens)
Okay, my dear. . . The book?
It’s brilliant. I’m close to
concluding. Just about to
write how important a clear writing
style is when conveying your
cinematic vision on the page.
(listens)
Funny you should ask, Riley
covers dialogue, action,
dream, montage, flashback
sequences, CAPITALIZATION, sounds,
texts, parentheticals, transitions,
and more. . . Yeah, The Hollywood
Standard is invaluable. . .
I’d better go. Need to get home.
(listens)
Yes, I know this conversation’s
in my head. I’m just typing this for
a meta-conclusion. To be clever.
The review is finished. Got to
start writing that feature film I’m
getting paid for. You’re right!
Right! That fridge won’t clean itself.

A prominent Russian politician who once commanded Russia’s Space Agency has said Vladimir Putin now has ‘no option’ but to use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

Dmitry Rogozin – the former head of Roscosmos who also served as deputy prime minister – declared that Moscow is facing defeat in its war with Kyiv unless the dictator unleashes his atomic weapons in a recent video.

‘It must be said that under our doctrine we have every right to use tactical nuclear weapons,’ said Rogozin, who was dressed in military fatigues with a customised AK-47 assault rifle slung over his shoulder.

‘That is precisely what they are there for — this great equaliser.

‘For now, there is a clear disparity in the forces and conventional weapons in favour of the enemy,’ he said, pointing to the West’s support of Ukraine’s war effort.

‘Therefore the best method to destroy [Ukraine’s] counter-offensive is to use tactical nuclear weapons, with understandable consequences, of course.

‘I think there is no other option at the moment.’

Rogozin’s alarming statements come just one day after the Kremlin suffered a drone strike in what some believe was an assassination attempt on Putin.

Until last year, Rogozin was in charge of testing Putin’s range of giant nuclear weapons – the ‘Satan 2’ or ‘Sarmat’ intercontinental ballistic missile – and Moscow’s array of space satellites.

But he has since become a mouthpiece for the Russian war effort, appearing in images and videos ostensibly from close to the front lines in Russian-held territory in Ukraine.

In his latest video, Rogozin admitted Russian forces are facing deep trouble in Ukraine’s expected imminent counter-offensive, unless Putin goes nuclear.

He clearly implied Moscow is facing defeat to a better equipped enemy – a stunning admission given Russia’s numerical superiority in troop numbers.

‘I want to say we are waiting for the [Ukrainian] offensive, we are ready for it,’ he said.

‘We understand that it will be very hard because they have a lot of power on their side, but nobody on our side will give up their positions.’

With the war in Ukraine now well into its second year, Putin has begun upping the ante – scrapping the only remaining nuclear arms treaty with the US, and most recently vowing to send nukes to Belarus.

But Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner mercenary group responsible for much of Russia’s limited success in Ukraine, has ruled out a nuclear response to the drone attack on the Kremlin.

The Wagner chief discounted the possibility of using nuclear weapons on Ukrainian soil and denounced Moscow’s tried and tested approach of nuclear sabre-rattling, arguing that Western countries will stop taking Russia seriously.

‘We look like clowns threatening to ‘nuke’ a child’s drone,’ he said.

A former Russian ambassador to NATO, Rogozin earlier in the war sought to scare the West with threats over Russian nuclear weapons.

He was wounded in December as Ukraine struck a shell at his 59th birthday party in a Donetsk hotel.

Two men were killed, and the pro-Putin war enthusiast sustained considerable injuries which required him to be airlifted to Moscow last month.

Now Rogozin – promised a future state job by Putin – is in the war zone heading a group of military advisers and the Royal Wolves research and technology centre.

He is leading a training effort in electronic warfare and drone piloting.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin continues to expand Russia’s nuclear capabilities despite regular foot soldiers complaining of a lack of equipment, ammunition and armour on the front lines in Ukraine.

Moscow is now planning to launch a new Pacific fleet of submarines that will carry lethal Poseidon nuclear missiles as early as next year.

Since the Russian despot invaded Ukraine, Putin’s propagandists have continued to threaten the West with a nuclear holocaust – and the rhetoric has continued to escalate in recent months.

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, the division of submarines to carry these underwater doomsday torpedoes could be ready to launch by the end of 2024 or in the first half of 2025.

Moscow said in January that it had produced the first set of the devastating Poseidon weapons – a blend of torpedo and drone – four years after Putin announced the fundamentally new type of strategic nuclear weapon, confirming it would have its own nuclear power supply.

In late March, Russia said that the coastal infrastructure for the submarines that would carry the Poseidon torpedoes will be finished on the Kamchatka Peninsula, where Russia’s Pacific Fleet’s ballistic nuclear missile submarine base is located.

‘The decision to form a division of special-purpose nuclear submarines in Kamchatka has been made,’ TASS cited an unidentified defence source as saying.

‘We are talking about December 2024 or the first half of 2025.’

Russia has claimed that the lethal Poseidon weapons – made up of a 65ft tube that is almost 6ft in diameter –  would be unable to be stopped by current nuclear defences.

Once launched, it acts like a drone where it can be remotely guided to its target.

Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea opened up about their lasting marriage on Tuesday’s The Howard Stern Show. After recently reaching 34 years of matrimony, the cute couple were grilled by the shock jock on how they celebrated the milestone, as he asked, “Did Jon take you in his arms and bring you to the bedroom on that night?” Dorothea was quick to respond with a quip, replying, “Always, Howard.”

The jokes didn’t stop there, as Howard cracked that the couple, who met in high school, only “make love” to songs by the very famous rock star. Dorothea showed off her funny bone again by chiming in, “Howard, I told you that in the strictest of confidences!”

Dorothea was a delight during the interview, as she dished on meeting her husband while they were both students at Sayreville War Memorial High School in New Jersey.  She said that Jon was “100%” the cutest guy in her school and that she knew he “played in a band,” as he always rocked his “rock star” look. “I just remember being impressed that you could sing,” she turned and told her husband.

Of course, his rock and roll dreams weren’t taken seriously by the couple’s friends and family. “That was everybody’s response,” Dorothea explained. “And I remember somebody told me a story and then I said, ‘Well, my boyfriend’s gonna be a rock star,’ and they were like, ‘Good luck with that.’”

It appeared luck was certainly on their side. The couple waited nine years to get married and eloped in Las Vegas in 1989, at the height of Bon Jovi’s career, and then would go on to welcome four children: Stephanie, Jesse, Jake, and Romeo.

The appearance on Howard Stern’s show comes a day after Jon swung by SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, where he dished on son Jake’s engagement to Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. As Jake is 20 and Millie 19, host Andy asked Jon if he thought they were too young to walk down the aisle. “I don’t know if age matters,” the singer, who got hitched to Dorothea at the age of 26, replied.

“You know, if you find the right partner and you grow together, I think that would be my advice really, is growing together is wise,” added Jon. “Growing together, and so I think that all of my kids have found the people that they think they can grow together with, and we like ’em all.”

Grogu, better known to his legion of fans as Baby Yoda from Disney+’s “The Mandalorian,” has infiltrated the Googleplex.

Type “Grogu” or “Baby Yoda” into the Google Search bar — and the diminutive creature appears in the lower right-hand section of the screen. When you click or tap on Grogu, he commences to use The Force… and knocks out the top section of the search results. If you keep clicking on him, he continues to dismantle the Google Search page.

Grogu stars alongside Pedro Pascal in Disney+ original series “The Mandalorian,” which just finished its Season 3 run on the streamer, and the toddler also appears in “The Book of Boba Fett.” (Before he was identified by name, Grogu was simply called “The Child.”)

According to a Google rep, the Grogu search Easter egg was not sponsored, but the company did work with Disney to make sure “that we were depicting everything accurately.” The Baby Yoda search Easter egg works on both mobile and desktop.

“Grogu is such a playful character and has amassed a huge following,” said Lucas Bullen, Google’s lead engineer on the project. “We wanted to recognize that and let fans interact with Grogu while he is practicing his Force skills on the Search page. We always enjoy adding these sorts of experiences for fans to stumble upon while using Google Search and as a Star Wars fan myself, working on this Easter Egg was a real treat.”

According to Lucasfilm’s official description of the character, “A mysterious child pursued by bounty hunters on behalf of Imperial interests, the foundling Grogu found protection with the Mandalorian Din Djarin. Through their adventures and journeys through the galaxy, young Grogu is honing remarkable abilities. Although he previously trained as a Jedi, Grogu has chosen to return to Din’s side and continues to share his adventures as they take a stand against the Imperial remnant.”

EXCLUSIVE: Cinema Guild has acquired U.S. rights to Umberto Eco: A Library of the World, a documentary about the bestselling Italian author with perhaps the greatest intellectual appetite of any writer of his time.

Cinema Guild announced it will release the film, directed by Davide Ferrario, beginning June 30 at Film Forum in New York City, followed by an expansion across the country. Umberto Eco: A Library of the World, which takes viewers inside Eco’s extraordinary personal library, premiered at the Rome Film Festival last October. We have your first look at the documentary in the trailer above.

The Cinema Guild

“A documentary immersion into all things Eco, Davide Ferrario’s film takes us on a tour of Umberto Eco’s private library, guided by the author himself,” according to a description of the film. “Combining new footage with material he shot with Eco in 2015 for a video installation for the Venice Biennale, Ferrario documents this incredible collection and the man who amassed it. As Eco leads us among the more than 50,000 volumes, we also gain insight into the library of the mind of this vastly prolific and original thinker.”

Eco’s interests ranged from semiotics to philosophy, medieval history, literary and cultural criticism, and politics. In 1980 he published his first novel, The Name of the Rose (Il nome della rosa), a murder mystery set in the 14th century that was adapted into a film starring Sean Connery and F. Murray Abraham. The novel also was adapted into an 8-part miniseries in 2019, starring John Turturro and Rupert Everett.

“A library is both symbol and reality of universal memory,” Eco notes in the trailer for the film as he tours rooms packed with volumes on a scale to rival the Great Library of Alexandria. “Libraries are the common memory of humanity.”

The acquisition deal was negotiated by Cinema Guild President Peter Kelly with Fandango Sales, the International Sales arm of the production company Fandango. The film marks the second collaboration between Cinema Guild and Ferrario. The company also distributed his previous non-fiction film, Primo Levi’s Journey.

Cinema Guild describes itself as “a premier distributor of world cinema, independent films and nonfiction work.”  Upcoming releases include Claire Simon’s Our Body and Angela Schanelec’s Music. Recent releases include Hong Sangsoo’s Walk Up, Helena Wittmann’s Human Flowers of Flesh, and Laura Citarella’s Trenque Lauquen.

EXCLUSIVE: Cinema Guild has acquired U.S. rights

Like him or not, Morgan Wallen is one of the biggest music artists in the world at the moment, in any genre. The country singer’s relatively young career has been a roller-coaster ride, to say the least, from the genuinely inspired to the boneheaded, and, in one case, shameful. Here’s a closer look at the major times the Sneedville, Tennessee, native has made waves with his music, his actions, or his words.

Baseball Blues
There’s an alternate-timeline scenario in which Wallen’s musical dreams are realized a little too late to make much of an impact, or maybe never even realized at all. As a baseball player at Gibbs High School near Knoxville, he dreamt of playing at higher levels and — according to his coach, anyway — had the talent to make that possible. But a torn UCL effectively killed his big-time baseball prospects for good. “I was supposed to play in college, got hurt,” he told Nashville Lifestyles in 2021. “I was devastated because I’d put so much time and effort into baseball. So, I started writing songs and playing guitar.” We all know what happened from there.

The Voice Giveth
Free to focus on his music, Wallen tried out for The Voice. The swoop-haired singer’s blind audition was not with a country song, but with Howie Day’s “Collide.” He started out on Usher’s team, then Adam Levine’s after a steal, singing songs by Avicii and One Direction. The week he sang his first country song, Florida Georgia Line’s “Stay,” he was eliminated from the competition.

Bro-Alignment Pact
After an initial indie release, Wallen signed with the indie label Big Loud and started recording. His debut single for the label, “The Way I Talk,” which he didn’t have a hand in writing, was a charming examination of rural speech patterns that “got some words you never heard/’less you come from down yonder.” But it was his alignment with then-bro kings Florida Georgia Line on the summer-barbecue-ready “Up Down” that put him on the track to superstardom with his first country-radio Number One. Even so, during this time, his live sets included a medley that mashed together hits by Linkin Park, Bon Jovi, Fall Out Boy, and Kings of Leon.

“Whiskey” Neat
Some time between the spring and summer of 2018, Wallen’s look went from auxiliary member of an alt-rock band to lumberjack-erotica cover model with the addition of a Joe Diffie-style mullet and the subtraction of sleeves from his array of flannel shirts. This is when his imperial era really began, in particular with “Whiskey Glasses,” a song that was written by Ben Burgess and Kevin Kadish. It was a potent combination of catchy and clever, with its rousing “line ‘em up” bridge that was easy for a crowd to remember and yell back at Wallen. There were also more than a few funny lines about drinking one’s way through a breakup — “Poor me, pour me another drink,” for example. It’s symbolic in a way, since alcohol has played a role in some of what would happen to Wallen over the next couple of years.

Diplo Collabo
Immediately after “Whiskey Glasses” took its over-the-limit bow at Number One, Wallen had a double dose of radio saturation with “Chasin’ You” and “Heartless.” “Chasin’ You,” Wallen’s final single from If I Know Me, was released in late July 2019 and was a slower burn in terms of chart success. Two weeks after its release, “Heartless,” a moody trap-country collaboration with producer and trend-spotter Diplo, promptly blew up on streaming sites. Everything was falling in place for a big next era, though there was a darker side to Wallen’s emerging stardom.

The Law and Kid Rock’s Bar
In May 2020, which as you may recall was very early in the pandemic, Wallen was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct after being kicked out of Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N’ Roll Steakhouse in downtown Nashville. Which brings up a couple of questions. One, were these Broadway places not observing any kind of pandemic safety rules? And two, what the hell kind of nonsense does someone have to be doing to get kicked out of Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N’ Roll Steakhouse? The answer to the first is clearly no, and the second, according to The Tennessean, was for “kicking glass items.” He’d have walked away from it with a clean record, if only he didn’t reportedly try to fight people in the street outside and officers intervened.

Saturday Night Loss
Wallen’s next musical era was ramping up later in 2020. The new singles “More Than My Hometown” and “7 Summers” had an unmistakably sensitive bent even when the music was more muscular. The songs were immediately popular and helped land him an artist’s dream gig, as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on Oct. 10, 2020. Three days before his scheduled appearance he was swiftly booted from the gig when photos of the singer partying in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, after a Crimson Tide football game began circulating. The images showed him kissing multiple women and playing guitar for an unmasked crowd, still very much in pandemic times. SNL was only just getting back to in-person shows with rigorous testing, and they weren’t having it. But Wallen ended up back on the show a few weeks later and even got to joke about the experience in a sketch with host Jason Bateman.

The Slur
Wallen’s double-length second album, Dangerous, was released on Jan. 8, 2021, a 30-track monster that included “More Than My Hometown,” “7 Summers,” a new version of “Heartless,” and a cover of Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up.” A mere three weeks after it came out, Wallen was captured on camera saying the n-word to a group of friends as he arrived back home after a night out. The fallout was swift — country radio dropped him and country institutions uninvited him from their awards shows. He apologized, saying “I promise to do better,” and mostly kept a low profile, making a little time to go golfing with Eric Church while things were quiet. The radio ban lasted about six months before the Dangerous track “Sand in My Boots” was in heavy rotation.

The GMA Interview
In July 2021, Wallen sat down for an interview with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America. While he attempted to openly address the controversy, he came off as unprepared. “I was around some of my friends, and we just … we say dumb stuff together,” he told Strahan when asked why he used the word. “And it was — in our minds, it’s playful. I don’t know, that sounds ignorant, but that’s really where it came from. And it’s wrong.” But his answer that was most misguided came when he was asked if country music had a race problem. “It would seem that way, yeah,” Wallen answered, six months after the slur video caused a firestorm. “I haven’t really sat and thought about that.”

Dangerously Popular
In what feels like the Streisand effect to end all Streisand effects, the slur and Wallen’s temporary ban from various country music platforms helped turn Dangerous into a sensation. It was popular out of the gate, but streaming numbers surged in the weeks after the incident, giving the album multiple weeks at Number One across all genres, and even dragging If I Know Me into the Top 10. Dangerous finished 2021 as the year’s top-performing album, and then later set a record for most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 by a single artist. Awards shows slowly started letting Wallen come back and perform, and the nominations began rolling in. Getting “canceled,” as some on the right suggested was happening with the response, may have been the best thing that could’ve happened to his career.

New Beginnings
To his credit, Wallen was mostly on good behavior in the stretch that followed his becoming a superstar. Granted, he didn’t actively try to call out the white supremacists who’d glommed onto him in the wake of the racist slur, but he wasn’t out creating more chaos. There was one little incident in a Broadway bar that got reported as him dumping a drink on someone, but that seems to be up for dispute. In the meantime, he began rolling out singles from a new album. “You Proof” was the first of the bunch and another country Number One — his eighth overall. The new album is called One Thing at a Time, and it packs a borderline-insane 36 tracks under one title. It was released March 3 and broke a record held by Drake when all 36 of its tracks entered the Billboard Hot 100 at once. It’s been sitting at Number One among all genres ever since, and even robbed Metallica of their 32-year streak of debuting at Number One on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Trending

The Voice Taketh Away
Wallen’s One Night at a Time Tour is undoubtedly one of the hottest tickets of the year, but it got off to a slightly rocky start in mid-April. At the KFC YUM! Center in Kentucky, Wallen took a hard tumble off the stage after getting lost in the fog. He recovered quickly, seemingly without any grievous injury. More concerning, his second of two shows at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, was canceled minutes before he was set to go onstage. The official explanation was voice issues, but fans were unhappy about sitting through opening acts in the stadium only to be denied the main attraction.

More Nixed Shows
Wallen said he was placed on “doctor-ordered vocal rest” and postponed three more concerts in Michigan, Illinois, and Nebraska. But some fans weren’t buying it, and rumors that excessive partying had compromised Wallen’s voice swirled, spurred by a video of a security guard at the Mississippi show who claimed the singer was “too drunk.” The security firm issued a statement saying the employee “made false claims as it related to last night’s Morgan Wallen concert,” which Big Loud amplified. “Thank you Best Crowd Management for correcting your employee, who made up an entire story that was nowhere close to true. Every detail was false,” said the label’s CEO, Seth England. Wallen’s One Night at a Time Tour is scheduled to resume May 4 with three shows in Florida.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan also stars Nayanthara.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan gets postponed. Makers reportedly eye for an August release.

After the humongous success of Pathaan, Shah Rukh Khan is all set for his second release of 2023 – Jawan. Helmed by Atlee, the film also Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in pivotal roles. While the film was all set to release on June 2, buzz is that the release date has been pushed to a later date.

According to a report in Pinkvilla, the new date of the film’s release will be announced shortly. A source close to the production team shared, “Jawan is no longer releasing on June 2, 2023. The team needs some more time to complete the visual effects of the film and they would rather come up with a product that competes with the best in the country than a substandard one.” Reportedly, the VFX team has been working extensively for the last few months but the process is taking a longer time.

The source further added that the team has narrowed down several release date but they need to be in line with the VFX work and guidelines. Alongside Red Chillies, multiple global companies are working for the VFX in the highly anticipated action-entertainer. “The team is contemplating on several dates but they need to be in sync with the VFX guidelines. The dates being considered at the moment are June 29, and all the four weeks of August. In all probability, Jawan will be an August release now, as Shah Rukh Khan and team now want to give adequate time to the VFX. August 11 and August 25 are heavily being discussed by all stakeholders at Red Chillies.”

Apart from Jawan, Shah Rukh Khan also has Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki in his kitty. He would be seen sharing screen space with Taapsee Pannu. The actor’s last film Pathaan went on to be a blockbuster minting over 1000 crores at the ticket window globally. The film also starred Deepika Padukone and John Abraham in key roles.

“One Piece” creator Eiichiro Oda offered fans an update on the upcoming Netflix live-action series based on the popular manga.

“I’ve been working with Tomorrow Studios and Netflix for quite some time now,” Oda wrote in a letter posted online. “Even though they understand each of the characters, we obviously come from very different cultures so, when it comes to entertainment, we have different codes, skill sets, and aims. Sometimes it could be frustrating for both sides. It felt like, ‘We’re all trying to get to the same place so how come we’re not on the same wavelength?’ there was even a time when I thought, ‘Is a foreign production even possible?!’

Oda went on to say that all involved in the show have “been hard at work this entire time” and that “each and every entity involved is working in sync.” And while it was previously announced that the show would debut in 2023, Oda said “they’ve promised that we won’t launch it until I’m satisfied.”

The full text of the letter can be read below.

The cast for the live-action “One Piece” series includes: Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. Vincent Regan, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Langley Kirkwood, Jeff Ward, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, McKinley Belcher III, Craig Fairbrass, Steven Ward, and Chioma Umeala will also appear in the series.

The official description for the series describes it as a “legendary high-seas adventure unlike any other. Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom since he can remember. Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, One Piece, to become King of the Pirates! But in order to find the ultimate prize, Luffy will need to assemble the crew he’s always wanted before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the vast blue seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals at every turn.”

Matt Owens and Steven Maeda serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners. It is created in partnership with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix. Oda executive produces along with Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements.

Letter from Eiichiro Oda

I’ve been working with Tomorrow Studios and Netflix for quite some time now. Even though they understand each of the characters, we obviously come from very different cultures so, when it comes to entertainment, we have different codes, skill sets, and aims. Sometimes it could be frustrating for both sides. It felt like, “We’re all trying to get to the same place so how come we’re not on the same wavelength?” there was even a time when I thought, “Is a foreign production even possible?!”

Now, this might seem like it’s coming out of nowhere but…we’ve been hard at work this entire time. And now, each and every entity involved is working in sync. We’re finally here!! Considering my expected life span, I believe this is the last chance to bring ONE PIECE to the entire world. If we’re going to do it, I want to be able to supervise things while I’m still active. That’s why I agreed to the live-action adaptation of one piece back in 2016.

Since then, Netflix has committed enormous resources to the production. It was announced that the show will launch in 2023, but they’ve promised that we won’t launch it until I’m satisfied.

The entire cast and crew, spanning various countries brimming with love for ONE PIECE!! They’re burning with passion, and I’ve reminded everyone involved that this should be fun.

We’re in the final process! Right now! Of finishing all 8 episodes! We’ll be setting sail very soon!!

The latest look at The Flash offers a host of new footage involving Ben Affleck and his Batman return. The newest trailer (which comes courtesy of Twitter user @TauroAldebaran) gives us a major glimpse at what is expected to be Affleck’s main action sequence in The Flash and finds The Dark Knight atop his Batcycle and dispensing justice once again. Check out the latest trailer for The Flash below.

While Affleck is not likely to play a big part in The Flash, the actor has recently declared that his performance in next month’s DCU outing is his best. “Yeah, I did finally figure out how to play that character [Batman], and I nailed it in The Flash,” Affleck said. “For the five minutes I’m there, it’s really great. A lot of it’s just tone. You’ve got to figure out, what’s your version of the person? Who is the guy that fits what you can do? I tried to fit myself into a Batman. And by the way, I like a lot of the stuff we did, especially the first one [Batman v Superman].”

As everyone now knows, The Flash will introduce the DC multiverse to the big screen. Thus, thanks to Barry Allen’s attempt to mess with the timeline, The Flash will not only feature Ben Affleck’s return as Batman, but it will also put Batman and Batman Returns star Michael Keaton back under the cape and cowl after more than 30 years.

The Flash director Andy Muschietti recently revealed how emotional the unexpected comeback has been for Keaton. “When [Keaton] arrived to the set, the Batcave was already finished and it was lit and everything. He stayed like this [eyes wide] for a while. I didn’t want to interrupt him. I just wanted for him to take it in,” the filmmaker said. “Who knows what was going on there? But something was going on there. It was funny because at one point during the scene where we shot him in the full suit, he was like, ‘Can you take a picture? It’s for my grandson.’ It was one of those moments where he really showed something was inside that was very emotional.”

The Flash Races Into Theaters on June 16

Warner Bros.

Worlds will collide in The Flash when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for.

Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson, The Flash sees Justice League star Ezra Miller return to the role of Barry Allen aka The Flash. The rest of the cast includes Sasha Calle as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, and Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

The Flash is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 16, 2023.

Scientists know that a dying star will become a giant that swallows all the planets within a certain radius, but they’ve never seen it happen… before now, that is. Astronomers at Caltech, Harvard, MIT and other schools have detected a star consuming one of its orbiting planets as it turns into a red giant. A star about 12,000 light-years away, close to the Aquila constellation, became 100 times brighter for over 10 days in an outburst that researchers say represented a hot jovian world falling into its host star’s atmosphere and, ultimately, its core.

The group first observed the burst in May 2020, but took roughly a year to determine what happened. Thanks to the NEOWISE infrared telescope, the team ruled out merging stars. The energy from the outburst was only a thousandth of what it should have been for a star-on-star collision, and there was a stream of cold dust rather than hot plasma. MIT’s Kishalay De, who led the paper, also notes that Jupiter’s mass is about a thousandth that of the Sun, providing a handy reference point.

This phenomenon is believed to be common in the universe, and it’s believed that the Earth and other inner Solar System planets will face a similar demise when the Sun dies roughly 5 billion years from now. In that regard, the astronomers confirmed their existing models. Past studies caught stars just before and after they swallowed planets, but never in mid-digestion.

There are still unknowns surrounding planet-munching stars. This finding helps complete the picture, though, and De tells ScienceNews that the next wave of infrared-capable observatories will increase the chances of finding similar events. That, in turn, could illustrate how these apocalyptic processes vary across the cosmos.

Do you like watching movies and TV shows?

Last night, the WGA and AMPTP walked away from the table without an agreement.

It’s a frustrating time to be a writer in Hollywood, especially since the things we were asking for seem so reasonable when you look at them. In six weeks of negotiations, the AMPTP didn’t even make counteroffers to many of the writers’ points. It’s disheartening, and it’s a sign of why you should care about the writer’s strike.

If You Like Watching Great Movies and TV Shows, Then You’re on the Writers’ Side

It has been 15 years since the WGA’s last strike, and it has never felt more necessary than it does now.

After an economic downturn and after the dismal COVID-19 years, you would think Hollywood would want to rebound with great shows and movies written by people who care.

But after six weeks of tough negotiations, the AMPTP didn’t even counter many of the writers’ asks.

This may seem like a WGA-only issue, but it affects all of Hollywood. Even if you are in the DGA or SAG-AFTRA or the PGA, what the writers are asking for now will hopefully set the precedent for what you’ll ask for and get in your negotiations later this summer.

People come to Hollywood because they want to be storytellers.

Even if you’re not here to be a writer, you know that great writing is the foundation of all your favorite movies and TV shows. A strike means that writers across mediums will not be turning in work. There won’t be new episodes of TV being written or movies as well.

There will also be pickets at the major studios.

WGA building in Los Angeles, CACredit: WGA

Why Are We Taking This So Seriously?

You don’t have to take my word for it. Listen to the WGA, who said, “The survival of writing as a profession is at stake in this negotiation,” and then expanded, “Driven in large part by the shift to streaming, writers are finding their work devalued in every part of the business. While company profits have remained high and spending on content has grown, writers are falling behind.”

The WGA continued, saying in a statement, “The companies have used the transition to streaming to cut writer pay and separate writing from production, worsening working conditions for series writers at all levels.”

Writing used to be a very lucrative pathway in Hollywood. Now, studios are working to change that. Driven by the tech companies that have bought out many of the studios, writing is becoming closer to a gig job than anything else.

Here’s a personal anecdote: I got on my first TV show earlier this year. When negotiating my salary for the room, the studio put an exclusivity clause in there, meaning that if I took this job, I could only work on this show all year. Well, that show was only five episodes, and that room was ten weeks. So, what was I supposed to do for the other 42 weeks of the year?

Staff writer pay is almost right at $5,000 a week, which means that’s $50k spread over the contract. But after agent, manager, lawyer, taxes, and WGA dues, it’s more like $35,000.

That’s not enough to live anywhere in Los Angeles.

How would I be able to afford rent if I wasn’t allowed to work?

My lawyer countered, and we got the exclusivity dropped… but only in features. There’s also a clause where I can ask permission to work on another show.

Payment needs to go up to match inflation and match the profits these shows and movies rake in for the companies.

What Did the Writers Ask For?

Writers across the board are only asking for 2% more of the profits, which are in the billions.

The WGA explained, “The entertainment segments of the industry’s major companies — Netflix, Paramount Global, Warner Bros. Discovery, Fox, Disney, and Comcast/NBCUniversal — posted an average of $29 billion in annual operating income between 2017 and 2021.” They published a report that says, “‘Legacy media companies’ profits in 2022 were lower, but the companies expect improvement in the near term as they build towards increased profitability in streaming.”

Streaming is a cash cow. Right now, these streamers pay no residuals to the writers who create and write TV shows and movies.

It used to be you could write something and then expect residuals if it was a hit or even a moderate success. But in Hollywood now, streamers don’t want to compensate that way, even though it has always been that way.

They won’t share numbers and refuse to pay fairly.

There’s also the case of artificial intelligence.

The WGA wants to make sure studios don’t force writers to rework terrible AI ideas, and then pay them less rates for rewrites or other loopholes. They want to regulate the use of AI or similar technologies to ensure compensation, residuals, rights, and credits are fair to writers.

You can read a detailed list of what the writers want here.

Just two days after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this year, CNN announced that twice-impeached-once-indicted former president Donald Trump will headline a town hall on the network as a candidate for the 2024 race. And, according to the dinner’s host Roy Wood Jr., the timing was “well played.”

In hosting the event, Wood made sure to torch every politician, news network, news anchor (current and former) and political faction in the building. The “Daily Show” correspondent admitted in a new episode of “Beyond the Scenes” this week that he had no shortage of material to work with, but still applauded CNN for holding onto the news.

“Last week, Don Lemon got fired, Tucker Carlson got fired, there was all the stuff with the Fox-Dominion [Voting] settlement,” Wood explained. “And then this week, smartly, CNN, well played, announced after the Correspondents’ Dinner that they are going to have Donald Trump on their network doing a town hall.”

Wood then made it abundantly clear that he definitely would’ve laid into CNN a bit harder had the town hall been public knowledge at the time of the dinner

“Yo man, if the Correspondents’ Dinner was a couple days away? Yo,” he said. “It would’ve been a whole different situation.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Wood revealed that he definitely had some jokes planned about Elon Musk, but those “got pushed real fast,” thanks to the back-to-back news cycles including the arraignment of Trump, the firing of Carlson, and more.

According to one of Wood’s writers for the dinner, Musk “just seemed irrelevant” at that point.

The true enemy of the Writers Guild of America strike is, of course, the networks and studios (represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, or AMPTP). Big bosses like David Zaslav are the typical target for picket line jokes, but some writers have found another, more unlikely target: Wednesday star Jenna Ortega.

The origins of Ortega’s unfortunate scapegoating are the infamous interview she did on Armchair Expert earlier this year, wherein she cast aspersions on the quality of writing on her hit Netflix series. “There were times on that set where I almost became unprofessional in a sense, where I just started changing lines,” she said. “The script supervisor thought that I was like going with something and then I would have to sit down with the writers and they would be like ‘Wait, what happened to this scene?’ And I would have to go through and explain why I couldn’t do certain things.”

Writers took umbrage with this omission at the time, and some of them held on to a grudge. “Jenna Ortega better be back from NY for her afternoon shift on the picket line,” writer Nick Adams (BoJack Horseman) tweeted following Ortega’s appearance on the Met Gala red carpet on Monday. Karen Joseph Adcock (Yellowjackets) retweeted with the comment, “Rewriting is writing! See you at the line, Jenna!”

Variety shared a photo from the picket line of Brandon Cohen (Disney Channel’s Just Roll With It) with a sign that read: “Without writers, Jenna Ortega will have nothing to punch up!”

It’s understandable why Ortega’s comments ruffled feathers, and she is likely one of the better-paid stars in the business compared to the average working actor. Nevertheless, Ortega’s tales from the Wednesday set actually illuminate how even a project’s lead actor can be overworked and ill-used. The schedule was about eight months of non-stop work in which she was not only acting for 12-14 hours a day, but was also trying to fit in cello lessons to make her character more realistic. She was either explicitly or implicitly (by way of serious pressure for a young woman to be carrying an entire production) encouraged to work even while sick, an illness that turned out to be COVID-19. “I did not get any sleep. I pulled my hair out,” she recalled of the shoot at a Q&A for the series. “There’s so many FaceTime calls that my dad answered of me hysterically crying.”

Ultimately, though Ortega could have chosen her words more wisely (or at least been more discerning about sharing them), the entity responsible for all of this is Netflix. After all, the notoriously poor conditions for writers at that streamer are surely not conducive to creating the best work, which is one of the issues WGA is protesting. If Hollywood treated its writers fairly, perhaps the Wednesday set would be much more harmonious.

The true enemy of the Writers Guild

Five months ago, Kevin Costner was widely seen as the stoic and highly respectable star of TV’s biggest drama. Now, the award-winning Yellowstone actor is at complete odds with his signature series, with reports that he’s exiting after the yet-to-finish-filming fifth season, and was reportedly blindsided this week by wife Christine Baumgartner filing for divorce after 18 years. In the midst of it all, the rumor mill has been quite busy, with Costner linked to reports that someone from the Yellowstone set got pregnant during production. But while nothing is 100% certain at this point, it probably wouldn’t be good to put too much stock into that rumor.

While it’s unclear where the rumors started, fans on social media speculated about Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone scheduling conflicts (which are technically also unsubstantiated, given the radio silence on the matter from both the actor and co-creator Taylor Sheridan), and how they may be tied to rumors that he got a female pregnant on the set. Now, TMZ is reporting sources with ties to Costner are calling pucky on those set pregnancy claims, saying the rumors are “total B.S.”

Kate Bush, who re-emerged in the public eye after ’80s song “Running Up That Hill” appeared on Stranger Things, and Willie Nelson, who just turned 90 last weekend, are now in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Among the other 2023 inductees announced by the Rock Hall today: Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners.

Mariah Carey, Lewis Capaldi, Whitney Houston, Coldplay and Sam Smith are among the first recipients of the new BRIT Billion Award, denoting 1 billion career UK streams.

The BRIT Billion award, which, like the existing BRIT Certified program and its platinum, silver and gold tiers, is verified using Official Charts data.

Other artists in the inaugural class of recipients are ABBA, AJ Tracey, Anne-Marie, Ellie Goulding, George Ezra, Headie One, RAYE and Rita Ora. More artists who have surpassed the threshold will be announced in due course.

“I’m really honoured to be one of the recipients of the BRIT Billion Award,” Carey said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to my fans for their endless and enduring support. I love you UK lambily and cannot wait to come back to your side of the pond and create more magical moments together.”

“Am so buzzing to be one of the first artists ever to be given a “BRIT Billion” award!,” Capaldi exclaimed on receiving the award. “Never in a million years did I think any of this stuff would happen but now it is I will gladly accept each and every award, you have my address x.”

Pat Houston, representative of the Whitney Houston estate, said: “Whitney would be very proud of this award, and the first thing she would say is, ‘is this for me’? Thanks so much to all of her worldwide fans, and on behalf of the Whitney Houston estate, I want to say thank you, and that we are extremely grateful, and that we appreciate you.”

This is the first time in its five-decade history that the BPI’s certifications program has recognized an artist’s combined success across multiple projects. The One Billion career total will include tracks an artist has appeared on either as the principal performer or as a featured artist, as credited by the Official Charts.

The introduction of BRIT Billion reflects the extent to which streaming has transformed the music landscape for artists and fans alike over the past decade. More than 85% of the UK’s recorded music consumption now takes place through streaming.

Sophie Jones, BPI chief strategy officer and interim chief executive, said in a statement: “For a recording artist, there can be few greater sources of pride than having a Platinum or Gold disc on their wall, but in an era when success in measured in the hundreds of millions and indeed billions of streams, it was clear that we needed a new and additional way to recognize and celebrate outstanding achievement in recorded music, and I feel certain that having a BRIT Billion Award will become equally prized.”

The BRIT Billion award represents the first significant upgrade to the certifications program since April 2018, when it was rebranded from the BPI Awards to the BRIT Certified Awards.

Dr. Liebenstein, directed, written, and starring Eric Karl, was initially released in 2014. A special edition with new music, updated effects, and scenes came out in 2018. The official synopsis is: A journalist (Jessica Henwick) investigates the truth behind a bestselling novel about a menacing vampire who was summoned from the darkness and began terrorizing couples in Chicago.

I will try to be gentle on this bold foray into the indie entry. I have always had a place in my heart for low-budget horror. Vampires have been hit or miss and done to death over the past decades with the creation of Twilight, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and True Blood. So if a filmmaker is going to venture into undead bloodsucker territory, they should definitely have some new tricks up their sleeves.

In addition to vampires, the very idea of a bawdy, erotic, macabre horror story filled with dim-witted, snarky, snotty young adults who are being preyed upon by dark forces is not new. This has been the formula in the history of exploitation and grindhouse cinema since Last House on the Left and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This throughline is also present in the slasher genre and goes all the way to the post-modern, self-reflexive meta-universe of the Scream series. While the formula has worked in many instances, unfortunately, sometimes, the result is ineptitude. Dr. Liebenstein falls into the latter category.

It is clear what influences inspired Karl. Yet, the plot is very incomprehensible, with flashbacks and dream-within-a-dream vignettes. Apparently, it has to do with a man with a haunted past who becomes a vampire killer and protector for a group of young adults in some suburb.

“…a man with a haunted past who becomes a vampire killer and protector…”

With low-budget indie films, especially horror films, I look for ingenuity, a hint of savvy. What clever ideas are the filmmakers working on? What tropes do they play with? What conventions do they break? For example, how did George Romero work his magic? How did Herk Harvey shoot his shoestring-budget cult classic Carnival of Souls?

Despite the obviously limited budget, I have to give Dr. Leibenstein some credit. There is some nostalgic play with the clichés and trappings of low-budget, indie-horror vampire films. Yet, the acting is very amateurish. The very rules of pictorial continuity are violated in almost every frame. Additionally, the special effects look as though they were generated with an iPhone app.

Plus, while this is not innovative enough to become a cult classic, some of the dialogue is snappy and amusing. The film does not take itself too seriously, which is to the credit of Karl. The director’s attempts to be outrageous, satirical, and sexy hit more often than not. Unfortunately, the nuts and bolts of the plot and story cohesion are not here. In many ways, the viewer could grow impatient with the shoddy structuring and its frustrating pace. In addition, the cinematography is totally inept, akin to a home video at times.

Despite the amateurish flaws and frustrating ineptitude of Dr. Leibenstein, one should admire Erik Karl for even attempting to make his film. The ambition and drive are there. The talent and the end result are not, unfortunately. However, if one wants to see a struggling filmmaker grappling with the complexities and nuances of making a film, this might be an interesting experiment in that context.

Shutting that down. Katie Maloney put Raquel Leviss on blast after a spokesperson for her Vanderpump Rules costar spoke out about mental health.

A rep for Leviss, 28, took to her Instagram Story on Tuesday, May 2, to issue a statement about their client’s social media platforms.

“This account was hacked and with the help of Instagram it has been reset and is now managed by Raquel’s team for the next month while she continues treatment,” the statement read. “MAY is MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS month. Raquel has requested all of the posts focus on raising awareness for mental health organizations, advocates and removing the stigma surrounding treatment.”

After a Bravo fan account reposted the news, Maloney, 36, clapped back in the comments section. “Being so morally bankrupt to the point you cause this kind of chaos you better be equipped to deal with the backlash,” she wrote. “And if your [SIC] not.. then get help you need but you can’t ask for sympathies in the process. That’s all. Mental health May isn’t reserved for those who seek and destroy.”

Us Weekly confirmed in April that the model was at a mental health facility in the aftermath of her cheating scandal with Tom Sandoval.

“Raquel and her family decided before the relationship was discovered that she would enter a voluntary facility for mental health counseling,” a statement from Leviss’ rep read, noting that the California native was in rehab, but not seeking help for substance abuse issues. “Raquel had planned to admit herself before the VPR reunion was taped on March 23. She was scheduled to go in pre-reunion but decided she wanted to finish her filming commitment. Bravo and production were aware and in support of her journey towards better mental health.”

Leviss’ personal life initially made headlines in August 2022 after news broke that she hooked up with Tom Schwartz amid his divorce from Maloney. The former beauty pageant contestant shocked Vanderpump Rules viewers again when her affair with Sandoval, 40, came to light in March, which resulted in the Missouri native’s split from Ariana Madix.

In response to the drama, Leviss issued a public apology to Madix, 37. “I want to apologize for my actions and my choices foremost to Ariana, and to my friends and the fans so invested in our relationships. There is no excuse, I am not a victim and I must own my actions and I deeply regret hurting Ariana,” she wrote via Instagram that same month.

The TV personality’s costars, meanwhile, called Leviss into question amid her stint at a mental health facility. Peter Madrigal and Dayna Kathan claimed Leviss was actually at a “spa” instead.

“Not a mental facility! It’s a Spa Resort,” the SUR manager, 38, wrote in an Instagram comment on a Pump Rules fan account in April. Kathan, for her part, commented, “She’s at a spa” on another Bravo account.

Leviss, however, received public support from Sandoval when he addressed the speculation. “Raquel is in a mental facility,” the TomTom co-owner told TMZ on April 25. “Whether she decides to tell you where that is after the fact — that’s where Raquel is. No visitors, no friends, no family, no phone, no nothing.”

Sandoval noted at the time that Madrigal and Kathan had “absolutely no idea” what was going on with Leviss. He also said that Leviss was “doing great” after making the personal decision to seek treatment.

Roku is making a franchise out of its original unscripted rom-com, Meet Me in Paris.

But instead of the Champs-Élysées or Luxembourg Gardens, the second Meet Me reality rom-com will see a new group of young women traveling to Rome in search of love. Production for the 90-minute film, Meet Me in Rome, is set to begin later this year and will debut at a later date on The Roku Channel.

Like Meet Me in Paris, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Zoe Saldaña’s Cinestar Pictures will return to co-produce the film. Witherspoon, Saldaña, Sara Rea, Sue Kinkead, Cisely Saldaña, Mariel Saldaña and Angela Rae Berg will serve as executive producers.

“Meet Me in Paris was a dream to make,” Rea, who leads unscripted for Hello Sunshine, said. “We witnessed three exceptional women becoming dear friends as they searched for love in one of the most romantic cities in the world. It was the perfect unscripted romantic comedy, and we did it all with a wink and a fun nod to traditional rom-coms.”

In a joint statement, the Saldañas noted their shared “commitment to a cinematic approach to storytelling, featuring diverse female talent” with Hello Sunshine. “We look forward to our continued partnership with Roku Originals on this franchise and beyond,” Cisely, Mariel and Zoe Saldaña added.

The franchise will serve as the latest piece of original programming for The Roku Channel as Roku bolsters its productions across scripted and unscripted. Last year, Roku debuted its “Weird” Al Yankovic satire with Daniel Radcliffe that nabbed wins at the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs and the PGA Awards. On the unscripted side, Roku struck deals with Martha Stewart and Emeril Lagasse last May for cooking and lifestyle shows that included access to Stewart and Lagasse’s back catalogs to fill out Roku’s library.

The company also made a splashy hire in Charlie Collier, the former CEO of Fox Entertainment who now leads Roku Media. One of Collier’s first moves was elevating David Eilenberg to oversee content for Roku Media, with Brian Tannenbaum leading originals and reporting up to Eilenberg.

“The team behind Meet Me in Paris took a bold risk by tackling a genre-busting format, and that creative bet paid off,” Tannenbaum said. “We are thrilled to partner once again to expand this into a reality rom-com franchise only on The Roku Channel.”

Working for Darth Vader’s Empire or Kylo Ren’s First Order may not be the best job in the “Star Wars” universe, but it’s certainly a position that many have coveted over the years. In fact, being a stormtrooper has become an easy way to sneak in some major celebrity cameos.

Stormtroopers have had some pretty famous people under the helmets over the years, from beloved actors, to pop stars, to literal royalty. Not all of them made the final cut, but if you search hard enough, you might find some deleted scenes starring your favorites.

Granted, those cameos are pretty hard to spot. Given the nature of stormtroopers, you mostly just have to have extra keen ears and pick out famous voices, rather than famous faces. And that’s if they even get to speak. Of course, it gets a bit hard to remember and keep track of them all, so we went ahead and did it for you.

Here is every celebrity that’s made a “Star Wars” cameo — or at least attempted to — as a stormtrooper.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame announced today that Post Malone will be the 2023 recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award, which is intended to honor “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs.”

The award was created in 2004 to honor Hal David, Burt Bacharach’s longtime songwriting partner and SHOF chairman emeritus, for his support of young songwriters. Past recipients include Taylor Swift, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Lil Nas X, Sara Bareilles, Nick Jonas, Halsey, Nate Ruess, Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo, Benny Blanco, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Rob Thomas, and John Rzeznik.

SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers said, “Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of watching Posty become one of the biggest artists in the world and he’s done it by writing phenomenal songs. Way before Post Malone was a superstar, he was a great songwriter, and this is his first step into the Songwriters Hall of Fame!”

The 52nd Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, June 15 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Inductees at this year’s event include Glen Ballard, Snoop Dogg, Gloria Estefan, Jeff Lynne, Teddy Riley & Liz Rose. Master songwriter Tim Rice will be receiving the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing the work and lives of those composers and lyricists who create music around the world. A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first significant commercial release of a song.

Last year, the ceremony — which is one of the most unique and star-studded in the music industry — returned after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.  Mariah Carey, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), the Isley Brothers, Steve Miller, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (the Neptunes), Rick Nowels, and William “Mickey” Stevenson were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Songwriter Paul Williams received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award, Universal Music Publishing Chairman-CEO Jody Gerson received the Abe Olman Publisher Award, and rapper Lil Nas X received the Hal David Starlight Award — the first rapper to receive that honor since Drake.
