The first products using Nearlink – a revolutionary next-generation wireless protocol – are hitting the market, with Huawei leading the charge.

The company’s Huawei Mate 60, MatePad Pro 13.2, and Freebuds Pro are among the first devices shipping with the Nearlink standard, which Huawei is championing as a much faster and more effective rival to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Announced at its HDC 2023 event in August, Nearlink works by making the most of existing wireless technologies, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, according to Huawei Central.

The benefits include 60% less power consumption, six times the data transmission speeds, and they support roughly ten times the device connections.

The standard is designed to strip away latency (offering latency of 1/30th of a millisecond) while offering high bandwidth to boot.

Not only is Huawei loading its latest devices with Nearlink, but it’s also leading a consortium of 300 tech companies to build the standard – all Chinese apart from Mediatek and St Gobain – to integrate the standard into their products.

This group includes a broad range of companies from sectors such as automotive, AV, home appliances, as well as electronics, and they specifically include Lenovo, Hisense, Honor, among others.

No major US names including the likes of Intel, Qualcomm, AMD, or Nvidia, are included, leading to a very real possibility the technology could take off in China and leave the rest of the world behind.

There are, however, alternatives, including the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology Apple is developing for its devices, including the new iPhone 15 series.

Although the US has blacklisted Huawei, it remains a significant player in the global technology market.

A China-only wireless protocol built and developed only by Chinese companies – led by Huawei – may result in a parallel form of networking that’s impossible to peer into – especially when it comes to shaping how the standard improves over time, and what that means for users and businesses.

The model honors the late NBA star’s memory in many ways, including two necklaces that she regularly wear.

“This is a necklace that says ‘Slim.’ It was my nickname growing up,” she explained in a video for Vogue’s Beauty Secrets series in December 2022. “I was just so eensy-teensy. All my jerseys said ‘Slim’ — I didn’t grow into the jerseys until I was older, so my dad always called me ‘Slim.’”

Natalia also showed off a second necklace with a gold medallion honoring the Bryant family’s Mamba and Mambacita Foundation. The organization works to provide funding for underserved athletes in honor of Kobe and Gianna Bryant. “I actually wear this medallion with me all the time,” she shared. “[The engraving] says ‘Dedication makes dreams come true.”

Emma Corrin and Rami Malek are adding fuel to rumors they’re dating as they were seen kissing in London, weeks after sitting together at the U.S. Open.

The stars of “The Crown” and “Mr. Robot,” respectively, exchanged kisses Thursday while walking and playing fetch with one of Corrin’s dogs, according to photos shared by Daily Mail. Corrin, 27, wore a beige trench coat, baggy jeans and a black top. Malek, 42, sported a blue baseball cap, a dark pullover and jeans.

Representatives for Corrin and Malek did not immediately respond to The Times’ separate requests for confirmation.

The Golden Globe-winning actors have been spotted spending time together in public in recent months. A source told People in August that the “affectionate” stars have been seeing each other since this summer, and that Malek “has fun” with Corrin.

In July, Page Six caught the actors sitting together at a Bruce Springsteen concert in London. One of the photos shared by the website shows Corrin whispering to Malek. A month later, the outlet reported the actors had dinner at a seafood restaurant in the United Kingdom. The Sun claimed that the actors are “getting incredibly close.”

Earlier this month, the actors reunited to attend the U.S. Open in New York City.

Malek, who won an Oscar in 2019 for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” was previously linked to co-star Lucy Boynton. She portrayed Mercury’s former fiancée and friend, Mary Austin.

Corrin broke out in 2021 with their portrayal of Princess Diana in “The Crown.” The actor, who is nonbinary, told Vogue in July 2022 about their dating preferences.

“I like people,” they said.

New merch from the next DCU movie, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, showcased Amber Heard in her return as Mera.

Due to Heard’s well-documented legal troubles, her role in the upcoming Aquaman 2 is said to be more of a minor one, as this new sequel closes out this era of DC storytelling on the big screen.

The first trailer for the movie seemed to confirm that fact with it only including one actual shot of Heard in action, although she’s still being utilized more heavily in promotional material for Warner Bros.’ upcoming superhero epic.

Elephant Stock shared images of new officially licensed promotional merchandise featuring Amber Heard’s Mera from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Heard is shown off in black and white in these new promo images, putting her front and center despite fans criticizing the fact that she’s set to return in Aquaman 2.

Jason Momoa’s Aquaman also got his own piece of promo material as artwork depicts him riding on the back of a massive sea horse on top of the ocean surface.

Will Amber Heard Help or Hurt Aquaman 2?

Much of the DC fandom was shocked to hear that Amber Heard would still be part of Aquaman 2 after her public defamation trial, putting something of a dark cloud over the movie.

There were even rumors during the trial that she had been cut from the final movie altogether; although, Warner Bros. reassured viewers that she would still be part of the cast.

Even so, with this film being the final one in this era of the DCU before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reboot, it’s highly unlikely that Heard will be included in DC movies moving forward.

And while director James Wan made it clear that this second movie was “always going to be (about) Arthur and Orm,” focusing on the brothers’ journey rather than Arthur Curry and Mera, her role in the film won’t go unnoticed when it debuts.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will debut in theaters on December 20.

Yuri Lowenthal, the star of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, has voiced his fatigue regarding the frequent discussions about changing Peter Parker’s facial appearance in the game. Lowenthal shared his thoughts with ComicBook.com, ahead of the eagerly awaited release of Spider-Man 2.

Marvel’s Spider-Man, developed by Insomniac Games and released in 2018, garnered enough popularity to lead to Insomniac’s official acquisition by Sony. It even inspired the character’s appearance in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Now Playing: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – Expanded Marvel’s New York | PS5 Games

Controversy erupted with the release of the remastered version of the original game for PlayStation 5 in 2020, which featured a significant alteration to Peter Parker’s facial model. Insomniac clarified that the change was aimed at improving the alignment of facial animations with Yuri Lowenthal’s performance. However, some fans, who had preferred actor John Bubniak’s previous, more mature appearance, criticized the adjustment. They argued that it appeared to be an attempt to replicate the younger Spider-Man portrayed by Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe–a choice they felt was mismatched with the seasoned web-slinger established in the first game.

“The performance was the same for me,” Lowenthal said. “I got over it as soon as they said, ‘Hey, we wanna make this change so that the facial animation is better.’ I said, ‘I’m all in!’ I don’t care if he looks like a goblin, if my performance is better, then I’m in. I’m kind of tired of talking about it to be honest, because I think everything that needs to be said has been said.”

Lowenthal added, “Some people will take longer to get over it, some people will never get over it. The one positive thing I take away from this experience is that people connected emotionally so hard and so deeply in the first game that they’re mad when they feel that person changes. I can only be so mad about that because it worked, not the change thing, but you connected with the character which is great. Now, get over it!”

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to launch on October 20 for the PlayStation 5.

Public domain, footage that holds no copyright and is free to use by the public, is music to the ears of a documentary filmmaker. But determining what footage is in the public domain, and how to get it for free, can be quite a chore.

Here are The 3 Best Completely Free Stock Footage Sites

Footage generally falls into public domain because it was created by an entity not subject to copyright (like most of the US Government), or the copyright has expired. You can check the 2015 US Public Domain and Copyright Term for current laws governing when copyright expires. If you’re new to public domain film.

However, once you find footage that is in public domain, it can still be hard to get a copy of it for free. (And the same can be said for footage that you plan to us under “Fair Use” but that’s another story.) There are usually two reasons you have to pay for something: your public domain footage is sitting in a vault somewhere and you need to pay someone to find it, or transfer it to the format you need, then ship it to you. Or a third party already has a useable copy of the footage and is selling it to you for that convenience.

As we’ve discussed, the search for archives is often the scriptwriting process on a documentary, and can be crucial to your film’s success.

If you’ve stumbled onto footage on your subject that has yet to have been digitized, by all means pay to get your hands on it. But since no one wants to pay for something they don’t have to, especially documentary filmmakers on a shoestring budget, here are some great free sources:

We are making this content available to our customers and contributors without any charge, so they can rediscover part of mankind’s history and build upon it in their creative projects. We have designated Content on the Website as being “Public Domain Content” when we believe that it is in the public domain under the laws of the United States, meaning there are no copyright restrictions over that content.

Strings attached: Pond5 started this public domain project in 2015, and all you have to do is create a free account to start downloading.

Prelinger Archives was founded in 1983 by Rick Prelinger in New York City. Over the next twenty years, it grew into a collection of over 60,000 “ephemeral” (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films…Prelinger Archives remains in existence, holding approximately 11,000 digitized and videotape titles (all originally derived from film) and a large collection of home movies, amateur and industrial films acquired since 2002. Its primary collection emphasis has turned toward home movies and amateur films, with approximately 12,000 items held as of Spring 2015. Its goal remains to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to films of historic significance that haven’t been collected elsewhere.

Strings attached: If you need written permission to clear your footage, you might need to pay Getty for it. From Prelinger:

“The Internet Archive does not provide written permission to use any material, and the user therefore assumes all risk when repurposing Prelinger footage. By way of contrast, when you license Prelinger clips from Getty Images, Getty Images will indemnify you against claims for copyright infringement relating to copyright in the footage clip.”

Our goal in digitizing these movies and putting them online is to provide easy access to a rich and fascinating core collection of archival films. By providing near-unrestricted access to these films, we hope to encourage widespread use of moving images in new contexts by people who might not have used them before.

Strings attached: Anyone can upload to the Internet Archive, so there is a lot to sort through with all kinds of copyright status. Even when listed as public domain by the uploader, be discerning.

The Motion Picture, Sound, and Video holdings at the National Archives in College Park are vast and diverse, spanning more than 150,000 reels of, 160,000 sound recordings, and 20,000 videotapes. Materials derive from public and private sources as disparate as MCA-Universal Pictures and the U.S. Air Force.

Strings Attached: Not all of National Archives’ videos are in the public domain, and many of those that are may not yet be available online, generally incurring extra costs. You can get a sense of what is available for download on the National Archives Youtube page, where videos will have links to the catalog downloads.

The majority of the films and videos in the Library of Congress are not available for duplication due to copyright and/or donor restrictions…The most accessible collections of archival footage in the Library of Congress available for purchase include The American Memory Films. Over 700 historical films can be viewed online and downloaded at the American Memory website.

Strings attached: Not all videos are entirely public domain, so in some cases you may need to contact the LOC, the original rights-holders, or plan to use them under a Fair Use agreement.

NASA still images, audio files, video, and computer files used in the rendition of 3-dimensional models, such as texture maps and polygon data in any format, generally are not copyrighted. You may use this material for educational or informational purposes, including photo collections, textbooks, public exhibits, computer graphical simulations and Internet Web pages.

Strings attached: If the NASA material is to be used for commercial purposes, it can’t explicitly or implicitly convey NASA’s endorsement of commercial goods or services.

On these pages you find overviews of some of Hubble video clips produced by the ESA/HUbble. The animations can be downloaded in different sizes and qualities. Everything is free for you to use as long as you follow the simple rules in our Copyright info.

Strings attached: ESA/Hubble videos are not public domain, but rather released under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license. They can be used for free but must be clearly and visibly credited. Look into the ESA/Hubble copyright details for yourself, but generally you need to put a credit at the end of your doc.

The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage. This webpage provides links to public domain video of some of those sites, including national parks, monuments, battlefields, historic sites and related areas.

Strings attached: Like NASA, videos must not be used to imply National Park Service endorsement of a product, service, organization or individual.

This should get you started! It’s important to point out this article is referring to footage that falls under the public domain according to United States copyright laws. And even if you are in the USA, as with all footage you find on the internet, exercise your best judgement. You should always double check the title to make sure it is in the public domain before you lock picture. Best of luck in your search!

Jake Gyllenhaal was considered for Batman in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy while WB wanted Leonardo DiCaprio for The Dark Knight Rises.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy could have looked a whole lot different if writer David S. Goyer and the studio had gotten their respective ways. As it turns out, Goyer wanted Jake Gyllenhaal as Batman and Warner Bros. pushed for Leonardo DiCaprio to play The Riddler.

While Goyer admitted on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he actively pushed for Jake Gyllenhaal to play the Caped Crusader, he’s far from being against Christian Bale’s interpretation of Batman; it actually comes across more that he wonders what the trilogy would have been with his choice behind the cowl. “I mean, Gyllenhaal’s amazing, Christian Bale’s amazing, so who knows what.”

And if you think Gyllenhaal as Batman is a huge “What if…?”, consider that the studio thought it would be a good idea to work in one of Hollywood’s biggest stars to step in as The Riddler for The Dark Knight Rises. As Goyer explained, “After ‘The Dark Knight,’ the head of Warner Bros. at the premiere said, ‘You got to do the Riddler. Leo as the Riddler. You got to tell Chris, Leo as The Riddler.’ And that’s not the way we work.”

Jake Gyllenhaal has been tied to Batman before, with rumors floating back in 2017 that director Matt Reeves wanted him as the replacement for Ben Affleck, who himself admits he didn’t exactly “jive” with the idea of developing the character further than he had to. Affleck’s Batman had a cameo in The Flash.

The same year that The Dark Knight Rises hit theaters, DiCaprio instead starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, which is undoubtedly one of his strongest performances. Gyllenhaal, meanwhile, led actioner End of Watch. The main villain role went to Tom Hardy, who thankfully wasn’t forced to play The Riddler…

David S. Goyer has a co-writer credit on Batman Begins and story credits on both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

How do you think the casting would have turned out? Could Jake Gyllenhaal have made a good Batman? Is The Riddler the sort of character Leonardo DiCaprio could pull off? Give us your take in the comments section below!

Another factor: “The skin around the eye is 10 times thinner than the skin on the face,” says Kim Nichols, MD, a dermatologist and founder of NicholsMD in Greenwich, Connecticut. This means “the visible signs of intrinsic aging or natural aging, caused by internal factors such as hormonal shifts and changes in skin metabolism, can be most evident in this delicate area.”

If you’re an allergy sufferer, you’re also more likely to have dark circles. In addition to seasonal allergies, Dr. Mikailov says, having eczema and asthma can exacerbate discoloration under the eyes from “fluid buildup in the sinus areas, which leads to increased puffiness around the eyes.”

Excess rubbing from the itching of the eyes and nose can also cause darker pigmentation. Sheila Farhang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, further explains: “Dry and dehydrated skin can make dark circles more prominent.” To combat this, she suggests looking for an eye creams that contains hydrating ingredients to plump up the skin.

Which ingredients are best for dark circles?

To increase circulation so that blood doesn’t stay stagnant in the veins under the eyes (remember the skin is thin, so you can actually tell when this happens), vitamin K is great at improving blood-flow, explains Dr. Mikailov. As for brightening, vitamin C is a go-to for glow boosting. Along with other antioxidants, it can help with lessening the appearance of dark circles in certain circumstances. If the discoloration is genetic or based on bone structure, there isn’t too much you can do to help.

Additionally, you can “look for formulas that contain arnica to increase blood flow,” adds Joanna Vargas, a celebrity esthetician and founder of her namesake spa and skin care line. Aside from actual topical products, Vargas says, “LED light therapy is great for building collagen and lessening the appearance of dark circles,” so it can help to add a light therapy device into your routine as well.

Dr. Farhang also recommends eye creams with niacinamide (vitamin B3) to help reduce hyperpigmentation and inflammation, and caffeine, which she says can temporarily reduce swelling and improve blood circulation in the undereye area, making the darkness less noticeable.

How do I apply eye cream for dark circles?

Vargas recommends giving yourself an eye massage by “gently pinching tops and bottoms of eyebrows and below eyes,” she says. She likes to do so at night, before bedtime, when she’s applying her eye cream to depuff and increase circulation.

Dr. Nichols also says to never rub because of the action’s discoloration-inducing properties. Dr. Mikailov echoes that sentiment, adding that it can help to “apply serum by tapping lightly or with a ceramic or metal applicator, starting from the center of the face, moving outwards.”

Summary

  • Most couples from the first season of “Are You The One?” did not stay together after the show, except for Ethan & Amber, who are still going strong today.
  • Dillan & Coleysia, Wes & Kayla, and Chris T. & Paige were some of the original pairs on the show, but they all ended up going their separate ways.
  • Some contestants, like Shanley and Adam, appeared on spin-off series or pursued other careers after the show, but ultimately did not find lasting love.

Are You The One? season 1 aired on MTV in 2014, but where are the inaugural couples today? One of the best reality dating shows with predetermined matches aired almost a decade ago, and they’ve had nine seasons of contestants trying to get all the beams to shine. With Are You The One? season 10 on the way, it’s time to revisit the first batch of couples. What happened after they either win or lose the cash prize and walk away knowing their “perfect match?”

It’s no secret that many dating show couples don’t tend to last–shows like The Bachelor/Bachelorette and Love Island have taught viewers that. With that in mind, it’s no surprise most couples aren’t together today. However, one iconic couple has gone the distance, making this one of the best Are You The One? seasons.

Dillan & Coleysia

Dillan and Coleysia were the first couple to get a “perfect match” result from the Truth Booth during the show’s iconic season 1. They were also one of the original two correct beams from the first match-up ceremony. Dillan and Coleysia only spent one ceremony separated and were pretty much a couple for the entirety of the show.

Although the two were fan favorites, they didn’t stay together afterward. Dillan went to LA to be a fitness instructor before pursuing an acting career, and Coleysia went back to Alabama. She’s now a mom to the adorable Randall. According to her LinkedIn, Coleysia is a Program Manager at Bubo Learning Design and also runs her own business, Pink Contracting Service.

Wes & Kayla

Kayla and Wes on Are You The One?

Kayla and Wes were the other original perfect match at the first matchup ceremony. Although they tried to mix it up for a few episodes in the middle and Kayla and Ryan went into the Truth Booth, they came together in episode 9 as a confirmed match.

Wes and Kayla didn’t pursue a relationship at all after the show. In fact, Kayla shared in the reunion that she had visited Ryan previously and the two hooked up. That, however, didn’t turn into anything either. Now Wes works in Pharmaceuticals in LA, and Kayla runs a blog and recently got married to Marcus Aurelius.

Chris T. & Paige

Shanley, Chris T., and Paige at the reunion for Are You The One?

Chris T. and Paige were the third and only other Truth Booth confirmed match. They paired up briefly in episode 2, tried other partners until episode 5, then stayed a match until the end. Their matchup was controversial, as Chris T. and Shanley had been gutted when they found out they weren’t a match.

Chris T. and Shanley continued to be into each other for the rest of the season, stalling the group’s plans. Poor Paige was paired with someone who didn’t even want to be with her. Now, Chris has two kids with a woman named Jamie. Paige is a Sales Representative at GrubHub and is married to Daniel Keats.

Shanley & Adam

Shanley and Adam pair up on Are You The One?

As the other half of the problematic pairing, Shanley was convinced that she and Chris T. were perfect matches. When that wasn’t the case, she switched around until she and Adam formed the pre-assigned perfect match. Adam, unfortunately, was another casualty of the Shanley and Chris T. drama.

Although Shanley and Chris T. were one of the best AYTO couples, things didn’t last. Shanley and Adam appeared on the spin-off series Second Chances, but things didn’t end well. Shanley is now happily in a relationship with model Cameron Porras and has a podcast. Adam works in cyber security.

Chris “Scali” S. & Jacy

Scali and Jack on Are You The One?

Many of the couples, whether accidentally or purposely, matched with their perfect match at a few points before the finale of this popular dating show. However, Scali and Jacy only choose each other once before the last ceremony. Scali was the resident player of the group, hooking up with Paige even after she had found her perfect match.

They weren’t able to make things work after the show, and now are living separate lives. Scali lives in NYC and developed the WOMME app that helps people find local contractors like DJs and dog walkers. Jacy is an artist and owns a studio, The Art Craving.

Ryan & Jessica

Ryan and Jessica from Are You The One?

Also not necessarily a strong couple on the show, Ryan and Jessica paired up episodes 6 and 8 before the final ceremony. Ryan had mostly tried a relationship with Kayla on the show, but they left the Truth Booth in episode 8 with a “No.” Jessica had gone in twice with both Ethan and Dillan with no success.

Jessica is now happily married to Thomas Prongay, has two children, and runs a fitness account. Ryan had a brief acting career on other reality shows and even a project for Awesomeness TV. Now he’s a writer.

Brittany & Joey

Brittany and Joey from Are You The One?

Joey and Brittany were another couple who only paired up two times besides the finale. Brittany and Joey didn’t engage in any sort of romantic relationship on the show, and Brittany was mostly involved with Adam during the show before realizing they were incompatible. Joey has two kids and is the CEO and owner of The Construction Agency and the Expansion Group in Atlanta. Brittany, has a sports-themed podcast called TheBosBabes.

Dre & Simone

Dre and Simone on Are You The One?

Dre and Ashleigh were a couple for a brief period of time on the series, but they ended their pairing when they went into the Truth Booth and discovered they weren’t a match, in the hopes of winning the prize money. Ashleigh was under the impression that they were not going to romantically pursue other people, but according to MTV, Dre ended up sleeping with his “perfect match,” Simone, after the final ceremony.

Scandalously, Dre was even technically still married, but separated, when he starred on the show and even had a child. Nowadays, he’s an actor and has two more children, though he’s no longer on social media. Simone appeared on The Challenge after the show, is the CEO of Limón Cosmetics, has pursued a career as an artist, songwriter, and dancer.

John & Ashleigh

Ashleigh and John from Are You The One?

Because Ashleigh spent most of the show interested in Dre, she and John didn’t pair up for romantic purposes. Because of that, they were the only couple to not pair up outside the finale. John went into the Truth Booth with both Jacy and Simone, but the pairs were rejected both times. Ashleigh is an actress, writer, and does voiceover work in Los Angeles. John also went into entertainment and does stand-up comedy in Tampa, Florida.

Ethan & Amber

Ethan and Amber from Are You The One?

Ethan and Amber are the single success story from the first AYTO season. When the show reached its finale and the cast won the prize money, Ethan proposed to Amber and she accepted. It was an adorable love story that fans fawned over.

Today, they’re still going strong as a couple and even have two daughters together. According to his LinkedIn, Ethan is a Senior Director for emerging markets at NetSuite. Amber is an influencer and social media marketing specialist, according to her feature interview for Luxury Lifestyle Magazine.

The companies’ latest offer was made on Saturday, according to studio-side sources familiar with the latest talks. In a joint statement, the AMPTP and WGA said, “The WGA and AMPTP met for bargaining on Saturday and will meet again on Sunday.”

Earlier in the day, these sources said that the two parties were very close to reaching a final compromise and the studio side had continued to work on language regarding regulations on artificial intelligence. Those same sources noted that apprehension about the unpredictable future of A.I. had complicated the negotiation. The details as of Saturday afternoon were with company-side lawyers, who studio sources said had been hard at work on language since Friday night. They began working on the details on Saturday at around 10 a.m.

Management-side sources noted that new streaming residual compensation is part of the package and it is not tied to health and pension funds.

The denouement arrives during the fourth consecutive day of work towards a tentative deal. Top company leaders — Disney’s Bob Iger, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos — joined the talks at the AMPTP’s Sherman Oaks headquarters on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; the CEOs did not appear to be in attendance on Saturday but reps from the studios did gather via Zoom.

The studio side made moves in the previous days on issues including A.I., TV staffing sizes and compensation tied to the success of streaming projects, according to management-side sources. On Thursday night, there was a brief chill in relations between the parties when the Writers Guild allegedly came back late in the evening with new asks on items that the companies believed had already been settled. However, the next day, the parties made “lots of progress and [engaged in] good faith but they need more time,” said one management-side source on Friday.

Ed Sheeran is taking musical inspiration from one of his friends. On Thursday, the 32-year-old singer shared a video of himself singing a portion of his new song, “American Town,” for his pal, Courteney Cox.

Before Sheeran began performing the tune, which will appear on his upcoming album, Autumn Variations, the singer told Cox that she is partially to thank for the track.

“Courteney, I wrote a song inspired by Friends, the show that you were on,” Sheeran told Cox, who starred on the beloved sitcom as Monica Geller. “I’m going to play it to you. It’s called ‘American Town.'”

With that, Sheeran played the track, singing, “We’re a long way from home / Haven’t seen you in so long / But it all came back in one moment / And the year started cold / But I didn’t notice at all / When we found there’s a room we’re both in.”

“We ate Chinese food in small white boxes / Live the life we saw in Friends,” he continued singing. “Your room it barely fits the mattress / Wake up, leave for work again / The wind it seems to blow right through us / Down jackets are the trend.”

Cox was delighted by Sheeran’s performance, telling him, “Oh my gosh. I love that. Wow,” before quipping, “Do I get paid?”

Sheeran and Cox are longtime pals, and the singer even introduced the actress to her beau, Johnny McDaid. Since then, the pair has made it a point to collaborate; they’ve performed “The Routine” from Friends, attempted the famed Dirty Dancing lift, and have even sung together.

Autumn Variations is due out Sept. 29.

Joe Jonas’ family always has his back — particularly in the midst of his divorce from Sophie Turner.

“Joe has always had an incredibly close bond with his whole family, so they’ve really been rallying around him during this difficult time,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly in September 2023, shortly after Jonas filed for divorce from Turner after four years of marriage. “They know that this divorce was not an easy decision for Joe, but they’re supporting him in any and every way they can.”

The musician has been on tour with Jonas Brothers — his band with brothers Kevin and Nick Jonas — amid his ongoing drama with Turner, with whom he shares two young daughters. (Following their split, the actress sued Joe in September 2023, claiming that he is wrongfully detaining their children in the U.S., which he denies.)

“Joe’s family understands that no matter what has happened between him and Sophie, that there are children involved so they’ll always be in each other’s lives,” the insider added. “They’re proud of him for putting the children’s needs first and doing what’s best for them. It’s not an easy time, but right now they are just being there for Joe for anything he may need.”

Kevin and Nick Jonas

Two of Joe’s biggest supporters are undoubtedly his brothers and bandmates, whom he has been leaning on during his ongoing drama with Turner.

During a September 2023 performance of the Jonas Brothers song “Hesitate” — which Joe wrote for Turner — Kevin and Nick were there for their brother in a big way. Joe, who had been getting emotional while performing the track throughout the tour, sang the song on stage just hours after Turner sued him.

“If you came here tonight with someone you love, put your arms around them right now and say, ‘I love you,’” Nick told the crowd in Philadelphia, hugging Joe after the set. Kevin, for his part, walked over to Joe and put a hand on his shoulder.

The Rest of the Jonas Family

The Jonas family isn’t just made up of Kevin, Joe and Nick — the artists are the older brothers of former “Bonus Jonas” Frankie Jonas, and sons of parents Kevin Jonas Sr. and Denise Jonas. The Jonas Brothers’ parents appeared to get emotional during one of the band’s performances of “Hesitate” after Joe’s divorce filing.

Nick, for his part, proved his devotion to his brothers in a 2019 Instagram post.

“Happy National best friend day everyone,” he wrote alongside a photo of him, Kevin, Joe and Frankie. “Me with mine … they also happen to be the best brothers in the world.”

DNCE

After the Jonas Brothers’ hiatus in 2013, Joe fronted another band — the ever-catchy DNCE — who hit the music scene by storm with their 2015 smash, “Cake by the Ocean.” After releasing two EPs and an album, the group — made up of Joe, guitarist JinJoo Lee, drummer Jack Lawless and bassist-keyboardist Cole Whittle — went on hiatus in 2018.

In an interview with Glass magazine that same year, per Just Jared, Joe described the band’s personal and professional relationship as “just four friends who want to play music, and whether it’s for a week or for the rest of our lives, we’ve decided to let go and just have fun with it.”

Diplo not only live-streamed Jonas and Turner’s not-so-secret Vegas nuptials, he later attended (and performed) at their wedding in France. “It was beautiful,” the DJ recalled of the pair’s ceremony in a September 2023 interview with Andy Cohen. As for the duo’s split, he told Cohen, “I wish them all the love because I think they have some children.”

Jamie Lee Curtis has her sights set on a specific role on Netflix’s One Piece, and the show’s team appears hopeful about making it happen.

Curtis took to Instagram on Friday to address a growing fan movement pushing for the Oscar-winning performer to be cast as Dr. Kureha in the live-action project. Based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga series of the same name, One Piece focuses on a boy named Monkey D. Luffy and his fellow Straw Hat Pirates amid their quest for the titular treasure.

“ONCE the STRIKE against the greed of the AMTPT is SETTLED with a FAIR CONTRACT, I will lobby along with the growing fan frenzy to become Doctor Kureha in @onepiecenetflix,” Curtis captioned her post.

This led Matt Owens, who is the series’ co-showrunner alongside Steven Maeda, to write in the comments section, “Mommy dearest, that’s why we sent you that figure! No need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work let’s talk!”

Curtis followed up her initial remarks with an additional post featuring footage of herself in an media interview to promote 2022’s Halloween Ends. During the sit-down from roughly a year ago, the star pointed out that her daughter Ruby Guest has encouraged her to play Dr. Kureha, a gray-haired doctor on Drum Island.

One Piece launched on Netflix last month and was swiftly renewed for a second season two weeks later. Oda’s statement about the renewal included a hint at the casting process for Dr. Kureha: “From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor… We will see!”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may now be riding the high wave in Germany as they once again successfully reclaim a spot on the popularity charts thanks to the Invictus Games. However, just a month ago, the Sussexes could barely keep their ship afloat as they dealt with a barrage of separation rumors, canceled deals, and failing friendships. However, times definitely seem to have changed for the Californian royals, so much so that they may just be stealing the spotlight from other couples in the business.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have secured themselves a spot in the elite wing of Californian where more such couples from Hollywood reside. And while the Harry & Meghan docuseries portrays a very peaceful surrounding, it seems like there might just be some bad blood between the Sussexes and another influencer couple, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag.

While the copyrights to the lyrics “I can make the tables turn,” are owned by Taylor Swift, it seems like Meghan Markle and Prince Harry can also claim it. The couple has always had the prowess to turn their lows into highs and sometimes even vice versa. However, their media savvy has come as a snub for the Hollywood sweethearts Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, who appeared on Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea podcast and claimed that a certain friend of theirs has “disinvited” them since befriending the Sussexes.

While The Hills actor and the Just Go With It actress strayed away from naming this friend, if they felt the need to mention it on a podcast, fans can assume that it is someone popular. And given the fact that the list of popular friends that the Sussexes boast of has thinned excessively in the past few months, it will not be too hard to narrow it down.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt may have been dumped because of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but the couple has no bad blood with the Sussexes. In fact, they do not even think that the Californian royals are a competition. Especially when comparing with Kate Middleton and Prince William.

Ever since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped into the royal picture as a couple, the competition between them and Kate Middleton and Prince William has been undeniable. And it only went on to become cutthroat as the Sussexes decided to lead their own path. Since then, with the future King and Queen stealing the spotlight at the coronation and the BAFTAs and the Sussexes at the Invictus Games and Women of Vision award, it has always been a close tie. However, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt do not think so.

Despite losing a friend to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the famous couple does not think the Sussexes have what it takes to go up against Kate Middleton and Prince William. According to them, the royals in England are far superior in terms of maintaining their public image and personal matters. However, Montag and Pratt’s opinion on the war between the Sussexes and Windsors is but a dime in a dozen.

English actor, Jason Statham was born in 1967. He is known for action-thriller movies thanks to the recreational martial arts and kickboxing background he has from his childhood. He became well known after being cast in Guy Ritchie’s films in 1998 and 2000. With the commercial success of both films, Statham starred in the Transporter trilogy which led to more successful jobs, making him into an action hero and a household name.

Updated on September 23rd, 2023 by Gargi Chatterjee: This article has been updated with additional content to keep the discussion fresh and relevant with even more information and new entries.

10 Cellular (2004)

New Line Cinema

The 2004 crime-thriller Cellular follows the story of a schoolteacher, played by Kim Basinger, who is kidnapped by an unrelenting criminal Ethan (Statham), and uses a broken phone to call for help; however, instead of reaching 911, she gets the cellphone of a college student named Ryan, played by Chris Evans. In order to figure out where she is and how to save her, Ryan must scramble to keep the phone call going, without Ethan finding out.

While the film was given mixed and very average reviews, the story was an exciting adventure that had very real stakes and dire consequences. Statham did an amazing job showing a cold-blooded killer with the cool demeanor that he’s known for. He was the best choice for the villain and contrasted with the fast pace of the film.

9 The Italian Job (2003)

Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, and Jason Statham in The Italian Job
Paramount Pictures

The 2003 movie The Italian Job is a heist action movie with a great cast including Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, and of course Jason Statham. The movie has a great flow and keeps you on the edge of your seat as Charlie (Wahlberg) and the team try to steal their gold back from Steve Frazelli (Norton).

In the film, Statham plays the role of Handsome Rob, a charming man who is not only the wheelman of the crew but also a ladies’ man. Statham is always a treat in action movies and this one is not different either. His character also provides much-needed comic relief amongst serious scenes of the movie where the audience can take a breather from the high-speed narrative.

8 Spy (2015)

spy-jason-statham

The 2015 action comedy movie Spy is a hilarious and exciting journey starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, and Jason Statham. The film’s main attraction is McCarthy who plays the role of Susan Cooper, who is a CIA agent tied to her desk and has to go on a mission when it seems to go haywire.

Statham plays the character of Rick Ford, a skilled agent who does not believe in Cooper’s abilities and turns up multiple times during her mission to let her know that. His presence in the movie adds a funnier note when we see that instead of helping her, he just seems to make her job harder. However, in the end, he admits that she has great skills as a field agent and they make up. Their squabbles throughout the movie add a great flavor to it.

7 Wrath of Man (2021)

Statham drives in Wrath of Man
United Artists
Prime Video

Wrath of Man is a 2021 action-thriller-heist movie directed by Guy Ritchie that stars Statham along with Holt McCallany, Josh Hartnett, Jeffrey Donovan, Scott Eastwood, and Andy Garcia. Loosely based on a 2004 French movie Cash Truck, the film follows a cash truck driver named Patrick Hill, or ‘H,’ played by Statham.

He has his abilities and past questioned when he stops a bank robbery and shows immense skills with guns. The movie is shown in four parts and has a lot of back and forth in the narration but it all comes together in a high tension climax. Jason Statham’s abilities as a great action hero really shine through in this movie and the rest of the actors also did a great job in the supporting roles.

6 The Expendables (2010)

Jason Statham and Silvester Stallone
Lionsgate Films

The 2010 action film The Expendables is the first installment in the franchise that brought together many of the big action hero names. Barney Ross (Silvester Stallone), and his motley crew of mercenaries are hired to overthrow a dictatorship. When the mission is caught up in a political ploy, the group must take on everything in order to save innocent lives under the traitorous dictator, and those who keep him in power.

The film is a powerhouse action movie, with firefights, explosions, and great humor. When released, the film broke the typical mold in demographics and independent films. Statham’s character, Lee Christmas, is a blades expert with some drama in his personal life. He was a character that had to be a tough killer-for-hire, while still remaining a relatable and likable person that deserves to be with the love of his life. Statham is a great actor to maintain that balance with some added cheeky humor.

5 Hobbs and Shaw (2019)

Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw
Universal Pictures

The 2019 spin-off film of the Fast and Furious franchise, Hobbs and Shaw, follows the unlikely pair that must work together to stop a cybernetic-advanced soldier. Not only must they fuse their wildly different personalities together to form a cohesive team; but they must also work alongside their wildly different families as well to stop the indestructible soldier from destroying humanity.

The film brought together two of the most interesting side characters from the franchise, giving audiences the best unlikely friends story. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham had amazing chemistry together, which elevated both of their performances. Statham has played many deadly characters, but Shaw is a character that needed to be stiff and pretentious, while still having the vigor to back it up. Statham’s portrayal was perfect and delighted audiences as part of the mismatched duo.

4 The Bank Job (2008)

Saffron Burrows and Jason Statham in The Bank Job
Lionsgate

Based on a real bank safety deposit box burglary that happened in 1971, the 2008 movie The Bank Job stars Jason Statham in the main role as Terry Leather, a car salesman who is approached by a woman named Martine Love to retrieve some compromising photos of a member of the British Royal Family from one of the Lloyd Bank’s safety deposit boxes.

The movie is a high-tension heist film filled with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is also one of Statham’s best performances to date and received a lot of critical acclaim worldwide.

3 Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

Jason Statham as Bacon
Gramercy Pictures

The 1998 dark humor crime film Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels follows a group of longtime friends that buy into a rigged, high-stakes card game. When they end up owing $500,000 pounds to the local crime boss, they decide to rob their neighbors after they have just robbed some drug dealers. The friends find themselves way in over their heads, as more criminal events take place in a domino effect.

Referred to as the best British crime film, it was met with good reviews. Some were critical of Guy Ritchie’s visual storytelling style, but the cast performed the dark comedy with such certainty and tenacity that it made the film great. Statham was perfectly at home in dry British humor with his matter-of-fact deliveries.

2 Homefront (2013)

Jason Statham as Phil Broker
Open Road Films

The 2013 action-thriller Homefront follows former DEA agent Phil Broker (Statham), as he moves into a quiet town on the bayou with his daughter. When the town’s resident sociopath and drug lord, played by James Franco, puts Broker and his daughter in the line of fire, Broker must defend his home and daughter with all the skills he tries to put behind him.

While this role is similar to a few of Statham’s other roles, he personified the “everyman’s” will to stand against all threats and defend their home. The level-headed thoughts behind the defense were a great contrast against the psychotic attacker. Statham’s performance was so relatable in the sense that he showed that no one wants bloodshed and violence; however, there are times when it becomes necessary.

1 Snatch (2000)

Stephen Graham and Jason Statham in Snatch
Screen Gems

In the 2000 Guy Ritchie film Snatch, an illegal boxing promoter, Turkish (Statham), is in over his head when a big-time gangster wants him to rig a fight with a rookie fighter. When the fighter Mickey, played by Brad Pitt, doesn’t throw the fight and knocks out his opponent, the gangster demands a rematch on the condition that the fighter had better lose or else Turkish will be killed. Meanwhile, a jewel thief, played by Benicio Del Toro, comes to place a bet while multiple people track him down for the diamond he recently stole.

The ensemble film was largely successful and is still known as a cult classic. The mix of a heist storyline and the rush to fix things with a mob boss made for an interesting adventure. Statham’s performance was great, as it followed along the same lines as Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels which came two years earlier. It had to be sarcastic, matter-of-fact humor in delivery while reacting to the ridiculous and hilarious situations going on around him.

WTMG’s Leo Faria: “This is not the worst idea Nintendo has ever had, but it’s really poorly implemented. F-Zero 99 feels restrained, never fully grasping the concept of an actual battle royale, just punishing the smallest percentage of players per race. It’s just a revamped take on the SNES original, with just more drivers per race, with a lot less room for skill, and more room for nonsensical mayhem. It’s free and devoid of microtransactions, but it’s also really short on content, with just four ships and a handful of tracks. It is not what fans of the franchise were hoping for. It might not be as insulting as Star Fox Zero or Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash when it comes to reviving dormant IPs with unnecessary experimentation, but it’s still a huge disappointment for those still cherishing F-Zero GX as the zenith of racing gaming as we know it.”

The film showcases life under the shadow of war—a young couple wakes to air raid sirens and has tea on their balcony, neighborhoods lie in ruins, and the community comes together to sweep up broken glass and rubble. Rule of Two Walls documents how Ukrainian artists help process their current reality and the vital role of community during a time of crisis.

Read on as Gutnik shares the challenges of filming and editing in a war-torn country, his post-production workflow, and the inspiration behind his first documentary, that, as he says, “I was born to make.”

Can you tell us about your experience as a filmmaker and how you got started in the industry?

I started as a film editor and had my first breakthrough cutting Christina Choe’s Nancy, which received the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Prize at Sundance in 2018. In 2020, I directed my first narrative feature, Materna, which was awarded Best Actress and Best Cinematography at the Tribeca Film Festival. Rule of Two Walls is my first documentary, a personal response to the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, where my sister, parents and grandparents were born.

How and where did you first learn to edit?

In college I was working at the World Bank, where I shot a documentary about the Bank’s checkered past and work on Involuntary Resettlement and Indigenous Peoples. The Bank wouldn’t edit the film, so I had to find an editor. A classmate of mine did a first pass. I learned from watching him edit and ultimately finished cutting the film myself.

How do you begin a project/set up your workspace?

The prospect of having to review footage for the first time is something I try to avoid until the absolute latest possible moment. I begin a project by setting up my workspace, arranging it and rearranging it, over and over again. Gene Hackman talks about how procrastination is essential to his process as an actor. He avoids dealing with the work until it’s no longer a choice, until he’s manufactured enough anxiety that finally doing the thing takes on an emotional, involuntary dimension. I’d like to think this is how I start. At least that’s how I rationalize my stall tactics. Once I manage to finally begin, I watch down what I shot and pull selects.

Tell us about a favorite scene or moment from this project and why it stands out to you.

There is a scene in which a Ukrainian cameraman stands a mere few feet away from a market being bombed by Russian missiles. The cameraman holds the shot for the duration of the shelling, refusing to run. I think about this moment every day, and it reminds me why cinema matters.

What were some specific post-production challenges you faced that were unique to your project? How did you go about solving them?

My team in Ukraine has been under attack throughout the post process. Our workflow has had to continually adjust to missile strikes and blackouts. What is more frightening than receiving a text from your producer that there is an upload delay because of bombing is how frequent and normal it became.

What Adobe tools did you use on this project and why did you originally choose them? Why were they the best choice for this project?

I used Premiere Pro, my native tongue, quick and dirty, like an old BMX. Also, our colorist shared links with me on Frame.io to review the grade. It was an efficient and user-friendly way to work remotely.

If you could share one tip about Premiere Pro, what would it be?

If you want to make a style change to all the subtitles in your film at once (size, font, color, shadow, etc.), you can do this by highlighting all the caption clips in your subtitle track before making the change. This may very well be obvious to many, but I spent an embarrassing number of hours making edits to individual subtitle clips before discovering this shortcut. Thank you, Adobe.

Who is your creative inspiration and why?

My three-year-old son, Ronan, and my one-year-old daughter, Liv Evgenia. I want them to one day be inspired by my work and be proud of me.

What’s the toughest thing you’ve had to face in your career and how did you overcome it? What advice do you have for aspiring filmmakers or content creators?

Fear of failure hobbled me in my first efforts, and it made me make less things. Even worse—it made me make things that I thought would make my peers like me more, even though the things I was making had nothing to do with who I am. Though I still have a long way to go, I have tried to overcome this fear by being more vulnerable and honest in my work. As dramatists, our job is to make sense and meaning of failure — to chronicle our characters’ missteps, their wins AND losses—that cumulatively may lead them to the possibility of grace. But how can we be experts on the problem of failure if we ourselves avoid failure at all costs? My advice to aspiring filmmakers is to make more mistakes. Take more risks. Let your freak flag fly, and you’ll succeed more.

Share a photo of where you work. What’s your favorite thing about your workspace and why?

My favorite thing is that it changes every time I start a new project.

A newly released trailer for the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special episodes reveals an old enemy coming back to face David Tennant, who returned as the Fourteenth Doctor.

Catherine Tate, who also reprised her role as Donna Noble, joins Tennant as he heads out on an epic adventure across space and time to fight Neil Patrick Harris as the Toymaker, an all-powerful enemy last seen on the show in 1966.

“I don’t believe in destiny but if destiny exists, then it is heading for Donna Noble,” Tennant can be heard saying in the footage.

As they try to figure out why the Doctor has come face-to-face with an enemy from his past, Jemma Redgrave also returns to her role as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, the leader of UNIT.

“This is just the start, as the fever starts to burn,” showrunner Russell T Davies said. “We’re heading for a November full of Doctor Who surprises, for fans and new viewers alike. Stay alert!”

Tennant, who previously starred in Doctor Who for five years as the tenth doctor, returned for the special episodes to celebrate the anniversary of the popular BBC and Disney+ series, which was created in 1963 and then revived in 2005.

It was also previously announced that Jacqueline King and Karl Collins would be returning as Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, respectively, in the 60th anniversary specials, as well as Ruth Madeley was introduced as Shirley Anne Bingham.

Doctor Who returns in November with three special episodes, titled “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder” and “The Giggle.” Watch the latest trailer below.

A newly released trailer for the Doctor

Medical drama shows have always been popular with audiences, and it’s easy to see why. The lives of doctors and life at bustling hospitals make for the kind of intrigue that’s almost tailor-made for TV. In recent years, one show that’s stuck out for its great drama and touching storylines is New Amsterdam.

Based on the book, Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital, by Eric Manheimer, who was the medical director at the hospital question, New Amsterdam did a great job of capturing the spirit of the stories it told. The premise of the show deals with the personal and professional struggles of the new medical director at one of New York’s oldest public hospitals.

Over the years, the show has seen some gut-wrenching medical drama, told some powerful stories that touched on poignant issues, and seen many intriguing twists. Unfortunately, New Amsterdam ended earlier this year. However, the show was fortunately able to give its characters a great send-off first. Here’s a look back at the best episodes from the show’s popular five-season run.

10 The Blues (Season 1, Episode 13)

NBC

Played by Ryan Eggold, Dr. Max Goodwin’s earliest changes as the new medical director were to get rid of most of the staff he felt were either not adding any value to the hospital or not on board with his radical ideas for how patient care should be prioritized. Having trimmed the staff considerably, he was left with whom he saw as the best people, those who shared his vision and were willing to dig in deep to help people.

That’s not to say that his inner circle of trusted doctors was perfect, as Dr. Bloom (Janet Montgomery), the head of the ED proved. This touching episode saw her having to confront the fact that she’s been struggling with addiction after a long time of being in denial and dealing with the underlying trauma that drove her pill dependence. After placing her colleague and friend, Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), in a difficult position of whether to report her or not, Dr. Bloom finally comes clean and has a catharsis when she finally confronts the emotional baggage she’s been carrying around.

9 The New Normal (Season 3, Episode 1)

Eggold and Labine in New Amsterdam
NBC

In the premiere of Season 3, the show, which itself had been affected by the pandemic, chose to weave this very real global medical crisis into the plot. The season kicks off with the staff of the New Amsterdam Medical Center all on the front lines of the pandemic as it ravages the city, and stretches the hospital’s capabilities and resources to the brink of collapse.

The show was often known to feature red herrings until heartbreaking and deeply moving moments were eventually revealed. In this episode, after all the stress and challenges the hospital and staff have to deal with from the pandemic, we also learn that they have been affected by it in a very personal way.

The episode reveals that Dr. Vijay Kapoor has contracted the virus and is fighting for his life. By that point, Dr. Kapoor, played by Indian cinema legend Anupam Kher, had become a beloved character for his gentle manner and immense kindness, so it was tragic to know that he may not make it.

8 Things Fall Apart (Season 3, Episode 12)

Max and Helen in New Amsterdam
NBC

Throughout New Amsterdam’s five seasons, Dr. Max was always the focal point. As a charismatic leader and a person who distinguished himself by his ardent commitment to humanitarianism, he often fought for what was right or risked and often sacrificed a lot to help others.

In this episode, his selfless nature leads him to place himself in danger again. To protect the hospital, Max placed himself in the way of a chemical spill, winding up soaked in the toxic substance. Dr. Sharpe, with whom he constantly has romantic tension, has to help him with a decontamination shower. They come close to kissing, but it ends up being another excruciating will-they-won’t-they moment that doesn’t pan out.

7 Unfinished Business (Season 4, Episode 17)

Helen and Max in New Amsterdam
NBC

An episode filled with excruciating tension, this one sees a disgruntled bartender drug Helen and other staff members. Helen, in particular, ends up facing the worst of it as many complications arise during her treatment.

She’s later faced with a choice when she develops multiple blood clots that threaten her life. Her only choices are to have a hysterectomy or another risky procedure. She opts for the latter to preserve her ability to conceive a child. However, although initially successful, she later has to be rushed off for emergency treatment after she suffers a huge stroke.

6 I’ll Be Your Shelter (Season 4, Episode 22)

Eggold in New Amsterdam
NBC

Like all Dr. Max’s inner circle of doctors, Dr. Ignatius Frome (Tyler Labine), known affectionately as “Iggy,” often displayed tremendous heart as he went about his work. As the hospital’s head of psychiatry, Iggy was known for going far above and beyond normal expectations to help people.

Related: New Amsterdam: Best Characters in the Series, Ranked

Imbuing his patient care with incredible acts of kindness, and by taking unique and very personal approaches to ensure they were helped, Iggy’s generosity and loving nature also often had negative effects on his safety and personal life. In this episode, when a hurricane hits the hospital, Iggy personally saves many patients from a carbon monoxide leak.

Being a finale episode, there was also drama aplenty. Since by this point Max and Helen had gotten together, Max fights through the hurricane, expecting Helen to return from the UK, so they can get married. However, in a tragic twist, he’s stood up at the altar with nothing but a voicemail message explaining why she never showed up.

5 Family (Season 4, Episode 13)

Dr. Kapoor in New Amsterdam
NBC

One of the most tragic episodes, this one sees Max and Helen struggling to adjust to the intricacies of their new life together. Meanwhile, Iggy and Trevor, who share some intense moments, come to a new understanding with each other.

However, the main touchstone of the episode was its dramatic end. In a move typical of the show’s high drama and tragic twists, after Dr. Kapoor earlier survives his Covid scare, he recovers but winds up handing in his resignation since Anupam Kher departed the show. After not hearing anything of his fate for a long time, this episode ends with the news that Dr. Kapoor has sadly passed away.

4 Six or Seven Minutes (Season 1, Episode 10)

Max and Georgia in New Amsterdam
NBC

During the course of the first season, after being enamored by Dr. Max’s amazing work and kind nature, it makes for very sad news when It’s revealed that he’s been secretly battling a life-threatening cancer diagnosis. Making it even sadder is that he’s going to be a father but might not even make it to see his child. Since he’s one of the nicest, warmest people around, this only adds to the sense of fear for him and unfairness over his plight.

This episode sees Max’s condition take a severe turn as he struggles through treatment, facing the very real possibility that he might not make it. Dr. Sharpe, whom he later married after Georgia passed away, is initially his oncologist. Placed in a difficult situation, she has to finally reveal to his staff that he’s sick and may not make it. Another poignant edge to the episode came from it delving into the plight of patients who cannot access life-saving treatment despite needing it the most.

The show was known for exploring real-life causes like this. Themes like the sad reality of the healthcare system’s propensity for placing profits over patient care, immigrants’ difficulty with accessing healthcare, discrimination, and many other relevant societal issues also often showed up in it.

3 Your Turn (Season 2, Episode 1)

Eggold in season 1 of New Amsterdam
NBC

The Season 2 premiere picks up after the horrific cliffhanger ending to Season 1 that left viewers wondering who had survived and who didn’t, after a major accident. The first season of the show sees Max still with his wife, Georgia, and an expectant father.

However, this episode finally reveals the heart-wrenching truth of what really happened. The entire time, it wasn’t apparent that Georgia, although surviving her emergency home labor and the accident after giving birth, later suffers a complication and dies at the hospital.

Max has been raising their baby, Luna, on his own, struggling to balance his life as a grieving single dad, a cancer survivor, and the hospital’s director, while speaking to the ghost of his dead wife the whole time as a coping mechanism.

2 How Can I Help? (Season 5, Episode 13)

Scene from finale of New Amsterdam
NBC

The series finale brought some much-needed closure to audiences who had stuck with New Amsterdam through all of its tragic and turbulent plot twists. Aptly titled after the catchphrase made famous by Max during his tenure as medical director, the episode sees him leaving a lasting legacy of kindness and compassion in the way the hospital is run.

The show ends with him leaving the hospital for his new job at the World Health Organization in Geneva after he hands over the position to Dr. Wilder. He later does a farewell tour of the place with his baby Luna. In an amazing twist ending, a series of flash-forwards then reveals that Luna later returns to the hospital many years later as a grown woman.

She accepts a new position, which turns out to be the Center’s new medical director, following in her father’s footsteps. Given all the drama and tragedy around the circumstances of her birth, and what Max suffered through to care for her, it was a beautiful way to end what had been a terrific show.

1 Luna (Season 1, Episode 22)

Luna and Max in New Amsterdam
NBC

The finale of Season 1 brought to bear all the drama, intrigue, and tragic moments that often characterized most of the show to that point. After struggling with cancer, Dr. Max wins over everyone at the hospital and becomes its most beloved medical director for how he champions the important causes of the Center and the patients it serves.

The season also built toward the moment when Luna would finally be born. Circumstances meant that Georgia was forced to have an emergency C-section at home, which Helen ably performed. Viewers are left initially relieved when both mother and daughter survive the ordeal.

However, on the way to the hospital, their ambulance is involved in a massive accident. It ends on a cliffhanger with us not knowing who survived, or what happened. More twists abound when the truth of the aftermath is finally revealed later, but the episode perfectly encapsulated what made the show such an engrossing one for fans.

Controversial Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy doesn’t like what he’s seen about how the journalism sausage is made.

Portnoy is hosting a “One Bite Pizza Festival” in Brooklyn, N.Y. today. Before the festival, Washington Post reporter Emily Heil reached out to the festival’s sponsors to see whether they had any comment on Portnoy’s association with the event.

A screenshot Portnoy published on the Barstool website quotes the email: “We are planning to write about the festival and how some of the sponsors and participants have drawn criticism by seeming to associate themselves with Dave Portnoy, who has a history of misogynistic comments and other problematic behavior.”

Portnoy confronted Heil in a phone call he taped and posted on social media. The video was headlined, “I Caught Wind That The Washington Post Was Writing A Hit Piece About Me And My Pizzafest So I Did What I Do. I Went On The Offensive.”

On the call, he claimed he didn’t believe the Post would give him a fair story and that Heil was trying to “shame sponsors.”

After the phone call was revealed on social media, Heil canceled a scheduled interview while they were speaking on the phone, according to Portnoy. The story ran Friday.

See the call below.

Although he fulfills other roles in our society—TV host, talk show guest, some actual astrophysics, presumably, at some point—Neil deGrasse Tyson largely exists to fill one major niche these days: Pedant. There must (apparently) be one person willing to stand up in front of the masses and point out when a science fiction movie does not space correctly, and that self-appointed job has fallen to him. It is not an easy road, nor a pleasant one, or even one anyone particularly wants him to walk. But it’s his, nevertheless, relentlessly informing audiences of every potential inaccuracy, and passing judgment—as he did in a recent interview, when he revealed that 2022’s Moonfall has stolen Armageddon’s crown as the least accurate space movie he’s ever seen.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on “Armageddon,” “Moonfall,” and “The Terminator”

Y’all remember Moonfall, right? Roland Emmerich flick; Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, Sam from Game Of Thrones; moon is hollow? It came and went from theaters with a quickness, with its only real hype coming from an aggressively goofy trailer. But Neil deGrasse Tyson remembers, stating (per Deadline) in a recent interview that, “I thought Armageddon had a secure hold on this crown,” (i.e., “violating more laws of physics per minute than any other film ever made”), “But apparently not.”

Sadly, deGrasse Tyson doesn’t get into any specific complaints about Moonfall’s physics, possibly because the film’s reveal that the moon is actually a Dyson sphere containing a white dwarf star is too ludicrous, on its face, to be picked apart in his usual style. (Oh, sorry, you just got spoilered for Moonfall.) We’re not entirely convinced that deGrasse Tyson isn’t somehow on Emmerich’s payroll, actually, because the idea of a non-entity like Moonfall beating out a dumb fun delivery vehicle like Armageddon on pretty much any metric is mildly laughable. (Call us when Berry and Wilson record a commentary track as joyful as Ben Affleck’s Armageddon tear-down of his own movie.)

Evil, as conceived by Stephen King, is an inexorable force as old as the world itself. It exists in countless forms, some of which can be staved off for a time but none of which can be extinguished permanently. It’s as much a part of the earth as it is a part of us, and it persists in a way none of us can or will.

The best adaptations of King’s work get under the skin as they force you to reckon with such ideas, staying with you in much the same way his books do. “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” is not one of those adaptations. On a scale from “Thinner” to “The Shining,” it falls in the bottom half alongside the likes of last year’s “Firestarter” remake. (That the original even spawned a sequel, remake and now a prequel is a bit puzzling in and of itself, as it hardly ranks among the better movies based on King’s work.) “Who asked for this?” is the question such projects invoke, and Lindsey Anderson Beer’s film never comes up with a satisfying answer.

Set in Ludlow, Maine, in 1969 — 14 years before the novel was released, 20 before the first movie — “Bloodlines” suggests that its setting, not unlike the town of Derry in “It,” is a nexus of malignant forces due in part to the original sin committed by its founders. The good ol’ days are spoken of often, usually with more melancholy than fondness. Ludlow is the kind of town everyone grows up hoping to leave but few actually do.

The return of a local boy named Timmy (Jack Mulhern) from Vietnam — honorable discharge, Silver Star — sets off a series of events that make it plain why everyone is on edge here. A bird flies into Jud Crandall’s (Jackson White) windshield as he and his girlfriend Norma (Natalie Alyn Lind) attempt to get out of Dodge and join the Peace Corps. Tommy’s dog savagely attacks Norma and puts her in the hospital. A few of the locals fear they know what it all means, and if every horror movie ever is any indication, they’re probably right. That those locals are all descendants of Ludlow’s founders lends even more credence to their ill feeling.

Among the film’s many flaws — its flat aesthetics, the forgettable characters who inhabit it (including David Duchovny and Pam Grier, both underused) — perhaps the most egregious is its utter lack of atmosphere. There’s no sense of foreboding despite its attempts to unsettle, no feeling that the early warning signs are leading to anything especially frightening. Audiences already know what the eponymous burial ground does to anyone (or anything) unlucky enough to be interred there, and “Bloodlines” does little to live up to or expand the mythos.

One too-brief exception is a sequence that takes place in 1674 and relates to the town’s conception as English settlers come upon the land and fail to heed the many signs that they aren’t welcome here. It’s by far the most compelling portion of the film, not least because it actually feels different from the prior three movies. Had the entirety of “Bloodlines” taken place in this timeline, it quite likely would have justified its existence more than this version does.

Beer, whose many upcoming writing credits are so wide-ranging as to include remakes of both “Bambi” and “Short Circuit,” feels boxed in by the franchise’s expectations and would likely fare better on a project whose source material hasn’t been gathering dust for the last few decades. “Sometimes dead is better,” King wrote in his novel. Forty years and four movies later, those words have rarely felt more true.

Olivia Rodrigo got some adorable dating advice from a little boy, and it’s damn good dating advice!

The 20-year-old singer recently appeared on the Recess Therapy show and she straight-up asked a little boy named Miles for dating advice, and Miles did not disappoint.

“How do you think that I find love in my life,” the songstress asked, prompting Miles to respond with, “Pick a person that looks kind.”

The most adorable part came right after, when Miles put his tiny hand on Rodrigo’s knee before telling her, “I really hope you find love.”

Rodrigo was visibly moved by the kind gesture, but Miles wasn’t done yet. He had her and host Julian Shapiro-Barnum cracking up when Miles also shared, “The only person you can’t marry is your cousins.”

Miles’ dating rules also include no one with baggage and no thieves. Rules to live by.

The sweet advice comes not long after Rodrigo dropped “Vampire,” which made waves after fans speculated the track is about her ex, Zack Bia. The DJ recently reacted to the speculation in a new interview with GQ.

“I don’t think it’s really about me,” Bia told the magazine. “I think the Internet just ran with it.”

Bia concedes that he might be one part of a fictional composite character, stating, “Look, I’m in the industry so I know how a song gets made,” he says, firmly denying that their relationship was worth a breakup song. “We hung out, we’re both busy, and we ended up not furthering our relationship. There was never any drama, you know?”

Furthermore, Bia expressed his admiration for “Vampire,” describing it as a hit. “The song’s so big and so awesome,” he tells GQ. “Look, a heartbreak song for the summertime, it’s an undefeated formula.”

In a profile with The New York Times last month, Rodrigo opened up about feeling pressure after dropping Sour in 2021, the debut album that brought her stardom as well as a license to “make mistakes,” which she says was evident in the people she chose to date.

“I had such a desire to live and experience things and make mistakes and grow after Sour came out, I kind of felt this pressure to be this girl that I thought everyone expected me to be,” she says. “And I think because of that pressure, maybe I did things that maybe I shouldn’t have — dated people I shouldn’t have.”

She didn’t name names in the profile but her dating history’s been the topic of conversation in just a short amount of time since she became famous.

Her most recent album, Guts, is rumored to be about her failed romance with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star, Joshua Bassett. In 2021, she was said to be dating 26-year-old producer Adam Faze, but the two split in early 2022. She was later linked to Bia. They called it quits in August 2022.

Initial public offerings are back, warts and all.

After a two-year dearth of new listings, shares of the grocery delivery company Instacart closed their first day of trading on Tuesday at $33.70, up 12 percent from their initial public offering price of $30. The performance signaled that investors were eager to take a chance on young tech companies — but only at the right price.

Instacart’s market capitalization, including all outstanding shares, totaled $11.1 billion. But even with the early stock price pop, the company’s valuation remained a far cry from the $39 billion that investors assigned it in the private market in 2021. It was a painful loss to investors who had bought in at that peak, sending a harsh reality check to other start-ups that raised money at inflated valuations.

Fidji Simo, Instacart’s chief executive, said the valuation reflects the changes in public stock prices, even as the company has improved its performance in the last two years, including by turning a profit.

“The markets will always ebb and flow,” she said, adding that she was more focused on what she could control.

The tech and finance industries had eagerly anticipated new I.P.O.s in hopes they would usher in more listings. Inflation and rising interest rates, alongside a broader downturn marked by layoffs and other cuts, deepened investor skepticism of tech companies, leading to a virtual freeze in I.P.O.s for the past two years.

Just 144 companies went public in the United States in that time, raising $22.5 billion, down from 397 I.P.O.s that raised $142 billion in 2021, according to Renaissance Capital, which tracks new listings.

Things began changing last week when Arm, a chip designer owned by SoftBank, went public. Its stock was priced at the top of its proposed range and jumped 25 percent on the first day of trading. Many hoped Arm’s I.P.O. would encourage more investors to pour money into tech again.

A backlog of companies are eager to tap the public market. More than 1,400 private start-ups, together worth more than $4.9 trillion, could be candidates, according to EquityZen, a marketplace for private stock. Among them are the social media company Reddit, the ticketing start-up SeatGeek and the car rental company Turo.

Klaviyo, a marketing software start-up, is also set to go public this week. Investors valued the company at $9.5 billion when it was privately held.

Investors have often been skeptical that the highly valued tech companies of the last generation — called “unicorns” for their rare billion-dollar valuations — could turn a profit.

Both Instacart and Klaviyo have defied that expectation. Instacart made $428 million in profit on $2.5 billion in revenue last year, partly because it had expanded beyond its core grocery delivery business and into ads and software services. Klaviyo lost money last year but turned a $15 million profit on $320 million in revenue in the first half of this year.

Taken together, they showed that the bar for what investors expect in a company’s going public is higher than it was. “Profitability will be key,” said Kyle Stanford, an analyst at PitchBook, which tracks start-ups.

Ms. Simo said public market investors had raised questions about Instacart’s future growth, but placed a very large premium on its profits.

“The turnaround we’ve accomplished in the last two years mattered enormously,” she said.

Instacart’s path has not been easy. Founded in 2012 as a service that connected customers at home with contract workers who shopped and delivered their groceries, it has faced scrutiny — along with other gig companies like Uber and DoorDash — over whether its contractors should be treated as employees and whether they are fairly compensated.

Customers flocked to Instacart’s app during the early days of pandemic lockdowns, but its growth plunged in mid-2021 as people returned to grocery stores, prompting questions about the long-term sustainability of the business.

Apoorva Mehta, Instacart’s co-founder and chief executive, stepped down that summer and Ms. Simo, a former Meta executive, took over. Under Ms. Simo, Instacart has increasingly focused on advertising and grocery software businesses, which has helped the company make money.

As the company’s shares began trading, Mr. Mehta reflected on the company’s ups and downs. “The first few years of the company, it wasn’t clear to the industry that Instacart was here to stay,” he said. “I don’t think that’s a question any longer.”

As part of its I.P.O., Instacart sold shares to investors before its formal “road show” pitches. PepsiCo, one of its advertising customers, was among them, buying $175 million shares. That move “sent a strong signal” to the market, Ms. Simo said.

The investment firms Sequoia Capital and D1 Capital are among Instacart’s largest outside shareholders, with Sequoia owning a 19 percent stake and D1 Capital 14 percent. Mr. Mehta holds an 11 percent stake, now worth roughly $976 million. As to his plans for the windfall, he said, “That’s the billion-dollar question.”

Meredith Kopit Levien, The New York Times’s chief executive, sits on Instacart’s board.

Instacart celebrated its listing by ringing the Nasdaq opening bell at its San Francisco office with more than 1,000 employees and “a lot of food,” Ms. Simo said.

Beyonce put on a glamorous display in dazzling, figure-hugging ensembles in new photos shared to Instagram on Saturday from her Renaissance Tour stop in Dallas.

The Halo hitmaker – who recently celebrated her 42nd birthday on a lavish trip to the French Polynesia – has been performing on her sold-out tour which is slated to end next month on October 1.

On her most recent stop in Dallas, the Grammy winner stunned in a flowy, Tiffany blue gown that contained bejeweled fabric that sparkled under the bright lights.

The hem of the eye-catching, off-the-shoulder dress flowed down towards the ground, and was also embellished with feathery pieces for a fashionable flare.

Vijay Sethupathi had once refused the offer to romance Krithi Shetty on screen.

Vijay Sethupathi had once refused to romance Krithi Shetty on-screen as he felt it would become awkward.

Vijay Sethupathi is regarded as one of the finest actors to have emerged in Indian cinema. From Super Deluxe to Farzi and now Jawan, Vijay Sethupathi has established himself as a pan-India star, with his versatility and an all-round performance. Thus, it’s only natural for the makers to pursue Vijay Sethupathi for their projects. But even the actor has certain boundaries and parameters set in place through which he likes to filter out work for himself. A fine example of that would be when he turned down to work with Krithi Shetty due to the age gap.

During an old interview, at the promotional event for his action film Laabam, the talented actor had revealed how he was paired with the Uppena fame Krithi Shetty but he felt uncomfortable, subhe Krithi had played his daughter earlier. The actor explained that he could never romance someone whom he considers like his daughter.

Vijay had told News Buzz, “While I was shooting for Labham, the makers said they were planning to rope in Krithi Shetty for the female lead role in the film. At that time, Uppena was in the making as well. In Uppena, Krithi Shetty played my daughter. Incidentally, the makers of Laabam were contemplating the idea of roping in Krithi Shetty for the female lead role to act alongside me. But I immediately turned down their advancements. How can I romance an actress who is playing my daughter in a film that is also shot simultaneously? This would have been such an awkward experience. I rejected the prospect of Krithi Shetty playing my love interest in Laabam.”

Meanwhile, Vijay Sethupathi has impressed everyone with his character of Kalee Gaekwad in Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan. Helmed by Atlee, the film has been shattering records, even after three weeks since its release. Now Vijay Sethupathi is looking forward to his next big Hindi film Merry Christmas, featuring Katrina Kaif. The Sriram Raghavan directorial is slated to release in December this year.

Vijay Sethupathi had once refused the offer

Irish filmmaker and songwriter John Carney has never been afraid of a little sincerity. Or a lot. In fact, he’s a champion of earnestness, making big, swoony feelings set to incredible music the core of his filmmaking since his 2007 breakout hit, “Once,” which scored the Oscar for best original song for the achingly beautiful love song “Falling Slowly,” by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. He wraps his homespun and heartfelt stories, which also include “Begin Again,” and “Sing Street,” in tunes that can be catchy or poignant, and his latest, “Flora and Son,” is no exception.

He’s also got a star with a remarkable rock pedigree in Eve Hewson, the daughter of U2 frontman Bono. She anchors the film as Flora, a young Dublin mother yearning for more. But Hewson’s famous father is of no import here; she owns the screen with her mischievous charm, inhabiting Flora’s sharp wit and uninhibited nature, which is undergirded by a raw vulnerability. Hewson also has a gorgeous singing voice, but that might be afforded to her just by virtue of her Irish heritage.

When we meet Flora, she’s stampeding to the dance floor to lose herself in a thumping techno beat, and potentially in the arms of a stranger. Electronic dance music is her on-screen signature, and Carney charts her musical evolution alongside her personal journey over the course of “Flora and Son.”

Flora is young and beautiful, but she has responsibilities that supersede her wild nights out — keeping her 14-year-old son Max (Orén Kinlan) out of trouble, tangling with her ex, Ian (Jack Reynor), Max’s dad, and working as a mother’s helper. Like a lot of Carney characters, Flora is stuck. She dreams of something more, but she doesn’t know what, exactly. By a stroke of luck and determination, she finds it in a garbage dumpster.

What she sees is a busted acoustic guitar that she thinks might keep Max out of trouble. When he expresses disinterest, it sits in the corner like a telltale heart, beckoning Flora to pick it up. She’s driven by her desire for purpose and passion, and also by spite, wanting to stick it to Ian, who enjoyed a modicum of success with his band years ago when they first met (“We shared a bill with Snow Patrol,” he brags). So she chugs some wine and signs up for online guitar lessons with a soulful Southern California bard named Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who opines about songwriting with Topanga Canyon looming in the Zoom background.

Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the movie “Flora and Son.”

(David Cleary / Apple TV+)

In “Flora and Son,” Carney is interested in the way that music and songwriting can bridge vast distances, both geographical and emotional, which are themes he constantly returns to in his work, though they seem as fresh and exciting as ever. As Flora grows closer to Jeff, who represents an escapist fantasy from her dreary Dublin life, Carney liberates him from the screen of her laptop. They strum and sing together in her kitchen and in the park, and she offers frank notes on his songs, the shared experience of making music allowing them to somehow traverse oceans and continents.

In her real life, music becomes the thread that connects Flora to Max as well, as she discovers he’s making electronic beats. It becomes an activity that binds mother and son as they collaborate on songs and music videos, Flora hyping up the quiet, withdrawn Max to become the hip-hop superstar he dreams to be. Making music also provides neutral ground to find peace with Ian as well, as Flora reshapes her tiny dysfunctional family into a new iteration.

There’s an air of magical realism to Carney’s films, as fate and fantasy slip and slide together when chords thrum the air. It’s reflected in how he imagines Jeff and Flora in the same space together; it tickles the edges of Flora and Max’s collaborations. But ultimately “Flora and Son” remains grounded in reality, and in Flora’s connection with her son. Her purpose in life was in front of her all along. She just needed to find herself in the mix too.

Carney’s insistence on guileless emotion in the songwriting (he and Scottish musician Gary Clark co-wrote the original tunes) makes for intensely open-hearted moments. But his script is typically Irish, imbued with playful jabs and crude humor, and Hewson’s forthright and foul-mouthed performance proves to be the perfect hit of sweet-and-sour acid to offset what could have been impossibly treacly. She’s a superstar in the making.

It’s almost unbelievable that Carney pulls off films like this, which could easily tip over into maudlin. Instead, the winning “Flora and Son” is an utterly irresistible emotional ear-worm.

New art from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home showed off a Michael Keaton cameo as the Vulture that was on the table.

Although Keaton hasn’t been seen in the MCU since his time playing the lead villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel and Sony almost gave him a surprising cameo role in Spidey’s massive Multiversal 2021 solo outing.

That movie wound up centering on a quintet of antagonists from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s solo films, tying together two decades of web-slinger history into one emotional adventure.

Michael Keaton’s Scrapped No Way Home Cameo

Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios concept artist Phil Saunders shared new art revealing Michael Keaton’s scrapped cameo as Adrian Toomes/the Vulture in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Hinting that Keaton wasn’t available for shooting, Saunders explained how this version of the film would have seen Peter Parker “enlisting the aid of a former foe” in order to cure/rehabilitate the film’s five displaced villains:

“On any project of this complexity, the script will go through numerous changes as story direction adapts to the greater MCU plan and challenges such as actor availability. An early version of Spiderman: No Way Home had Peter enlisting the aid of a former foe in rehabilitating the captured multiverse villains. Much fun would have been had watching him frog-march the multiversal miscreants across town with the help of Doc Ock’s hacked tentacles. It was a great joy to try to capture the diverse attitudes of these incredible actors.”

No Way Home Vulture Concept Art Villains
Marvel Studios

Controlling Doctor Octopus’ arms the way he did in the final movie, the art showed Peter showing up at the Vulture’s door with the Green Goblin and Electro webbed up against Doc Ock as they struggle to break free.

It’s unclear whether Keaton’s Vulture would have helped the titular hero with curing the villains, although it would have given Peter a tie back to his MCU origin story should he have been included.

Keaton was initially thought up for a potential role in No Way Home, with previously revealed concept art showing him alongside the film’s other villains shortly before Aunt May’s tragic death.

Will Michael Keaton Return to the MCU?

Looking at Michael Keaton’s possible inclusion in this movie, along with his recent appearance as Batman in The Flash, it’s fairly likely that the actor would come back to the MCU should there be a place for him.

He was even utilized in the post-credits scene from Sony Pictures’ Morbius in 2022, which would seemingly be the biggest story obstacle keeping him from an MCU comeback as he is now in another universe.

For now, Spider-Man is likely to remain on the outskirts of the MCU until Spider-Man 4 becomes a reality, with the film being in the early stages of development amidst the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

But with a Spidey sequel not rumored to come to theaters until Summer 2025, it will be some time until Marvel and Sony decide whether to bring Keaton’s Vulture back for another round of action.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now streaming on Starz and is available for digital and physical home purchase.

Is that a terrific or horrific time we’re alluding to in the headline? Why not both? Netflix’s latest (and final) limited series from creator Mike Flanagan promises yet another exquisite turn that lands somewhere between art-piece and terror. We’ll honestly be sorry to see this collaboration go. But it certainly looks like The Fall of the House of Usher will leave us with a bang. The Fall of the House of Usher trailer starts off strong and then only gets wilder. Check out character descriptions and our first good look at Mike Flanagan’s Poe-inspired series below.

The Fall of the House of Usher‘s Trailer

Speaking to The Wrap, Mike Flanagan said of The Fall of the House of Usher, “It’s crazy. It is unlike anything I’ve ever done, but in the other direction… My favorite way to describe it to people is like ‘Hill House’ is kind of a string quartet, and ‘Bly Manor’ is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is heavy metal. It’s rock ‘n’ roll.”

And this The Fall of the House of Usher trailer shows us exactly why. It feels like every string is being pulled hard, and in the end, the guitar is getting smashed. The amount of blood, gore, and fear we see in the trailer alone is certainly indicative of what’s to come.

Of course, we’re also happy to see some of Flanagan’s frequent collaborators in this The Fall of the House of Usher trailer. We can’t wait to see them crush this series.

The Fall of the House of Usher Official Clip

Netflix also released a new clip from the series. Entitled “Meet the Ushers,” this scene around the family’s massive banquet table introduces the entire cast. It was probably a nightmare to shoot. The family’s lawyer, Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill), whom they call “The Pym Reaper,” hands out contracts for everyone to sign. If any of the signees later reveal themselves to be snitches, they’ll get more than stitches. Not just out of the will, as Madeline (Mary McDonnell) explains, they’re dead.

The Fall of the House of Usher‘s Synopsis

Netflix

The trailer’s description offers us a synopsis that shares more about The Fall of the House of Usher. It notes:

In this wicked series from Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) and based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.

Fortunato, you say. Well, that’s surely a reference to Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado,” if there ever was one. And, we feel there will be many more Poe Easter eggs for us to uncover. Of course, we hear the famous refrain “Nevermore” echo through The Fall of the House of Usher‘s trailer and even see a raven.

The Fall of the House of Usher Character Descriptions

But who are all The Fall of the House of Usher characters that we get to meet in the above trailer? Well, Entertainment Weekly, via ComingSoon.Net revealed more information about the various Ushers, friends, and foes we’ll meet in the series. You can catch a few more Poe-Easter eggs in these Flanagan creations if you look carefully enough. Beware, do give quite a bit of information about each person.

Here are The Fall of the House of Usher‘s main characters:

Bruce Greenwood’s Roderick Usher is the family patriarch and CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. He is described as an ambitious and driven man, who has high expectations of his six children. While he gives them access to every resource imaginable, fatherly affection isn’t necessarily one of them.

Mary McDonnell’s Madeline Usher serves as the brains behind the operation at Fortunato. If he falters, she picks up the slack. But a downside to all that drive and ambition is the fact that she would step over her brother if she had to, regardless of the love she has for him.

Carla Gugino’s Verna is a shape-shifting demon, who made a deal with twins Roderick and Madeline when they were younger. Decades later, she returns at the height of Fortunato’s power to massacre the heirs to the Usher fortune.

Henry Thomas’ Frederick Usher is the eldest son of Roderick. Despite being the natural heir to the company, he’s described as the least capable person to take over the business out of all his siblings.

Samatha Sloyan’s Tamerlane Usher is one of Roderick’s children, who starts a health and wellness company of her own in an attempt to step out of her father’s shadow.

T’Nia Miller’s Victorine Lafourcade is Roderick’s daughter out of wedlock. She’ll do everything she can in order to gain her father’s most coveted approval and affection, even at the expense of her life’s mission to help people.

Sauriyan Sapkota’s Perry Usher is the youngest of the Usher children. Rather than inventing new medical tools or running the family empire, he wants to make life one big party.

Kyliegh Curran’s Lenore Usher is the daughter of Frederick, who’s described as a kind and empathic young woman.

Rahul Kohli’s Leo Usher is a video game patron and a socialite playboy with an intense drug habit.

Kate Siegel’s Camille L’Espanaye is described as extremely cunning and biting. She handles the PR for the Usher family, which has made her an expert at turning bad behavior into good press.

Katie Parker’s Annabel Lee is Roderick’s first wife and the mother of Frederick and Tamerlane. With a warm and trusting nature, she always sought to find the best in Roderick, but that might have left her blind to the dangers encroaching on her family.

Carl Lumbly’s C. Auguste Dupin is a brilliant attorney, who’s determined to take down the Usher family.

Mark Hamill’s Arthur Pym serves as at Usher family’s enigmatic lawyer, who remains an unfailingly loyal employee and enforcer for the Ushers.

The Fall of the House of Usher‘s Release Date

In “The Raven,” Poe remarks, “Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December.” But we guess October is close enough. And it is the best month for this kind of spooky limited-series to premiere. The Fall of the House of Usher will release on Netflix on October 12. It will be eight episodes long.

Unity announced significant concessions to its new game developer pricing on Friday. After rolling out the widely scorned changes 10 days ago, including a per-install fee many developers said could upend their entire businesses, the company rolled out a walkback today that softens some of the policy’s sharper edges.

Perhaps most notably, users on the Unity Personal plan will no longer be subject to the Unity Runtime Fee. This broadly disdained charge would have forced smaller developers to pay every time their game was installed (including reinstallations from the same user). Under the revised policy, Unity Personal users can earn up to $200,000 without changing plans — up from the previous $100,000. In addition, the company is waiving the requirement to include the “Made with Unity” splash screen.

Meanwhile, developers on Unity Pro and Enterprise plans won’t have to worry about the Unity Runtime Fee until they upgrade to the next LTS (long-term support) version of the engine shipping in 2024. Any current games or projects in development based on versions of Unity older than that won’t be charged the fee. It also only applies to those who switch to the upcoming version. “We will make sure that you can stay on the terms applicable for the version of Unity editor you are using — as long as you keep using that version,” Unity Create leader Marc Whitten wrote today.

Devs on Unity Pro or Enterprise plans who qualify for the Unity Runtime Fee will pay either a 2.5% cut of their revenue or a “calculated amount based on the number of new people engaging with your game each month.” A fee summary webpage clarifies those as “initial engagements,” which sounds like it voids the previous method that would have charged developers twice if the same person uninstalled and reinstalled their game (or downloaded it onto a new device). In addition, Unity clarified that developers will self-report the numbers determining the fee and will always pay the lesser amount of the two, quelling concerns about the potential for tracking and abuse.

Unity also said no game with less than $1 million in revenue for the preceding 12 months will pay the fee.

Whitten sounded a conciliatory tone as the company does damage control over its roundly condemned plans. “I want to start with simply this: I am sorry,” he wrote. “We should have spoken with more of you and we should have incorporated more of your feedback before announcing our new Runtime Fee policy. Our goal with this policy is to ensure we can continue to support you today and tomorrow, and keep deeply investing in our game engine. You are what makes Unity great, and we know we need to listen, and work hard to earn your trust. We have heard your concerns, and we are making changes in the policy we announced to address them.”

EXCLUSIVE, UPDATED with joint statement: The roller coaster ride of the Writers Guild and the Hollywood studios trying to seal a deal to end the writers’ nearly 5-month-long strike isn’t over yet.

After a day many thought would see an agreement between the WGA and the AMPTP finalized, it looks like things are on pause — at least until Sunday morning. “The WGA and the AMPTP met for bargaining on Saturday and will meet again on Sunday,” the two sides said late Saturday in their second joint statement in a week.

With claims of a “best and final offer” from the studios and streamers on the table and lawyers from both sides still poring over the fine print, the WGA strike is going to go at least one more day.

One more day that looks likely to see another so-called “best and final offer,” a fairly standard legal term that is nowhere as dramatic as some made it out to be today. Still, quickly burrowing under the skin of a number of scribes Saturday, the “best and final offer” term was bluntly characterized as “an unfortunate choice of words,” by one studio exec who worried it might have set the deal process back several steps.

After the two sides left for the day, discussions are being held Saturday night as to whether there will be another face-to-face meeting Sunday between the WGA negotiating committee and the Carol Lombardini-led Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. It is unclear if the CEO Gang of Four — Netlfix’s Ted Sarandos, Disney’s Bob Iger, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley and Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav — will be in attendance at that gathering, either in person and or virtually.

In the fog of four consecutive days of intense negotiations at the AMPTP’s Sherman Oaks headquarters, the CEO quartet had been in-person Wednesday Thursday and Friday. Sarandos, Iger, Langley and Zaslav were not in attendance Saturday in person, but did participate either remotely or through studio subordinates.

The WGA negotiating committee, many of whom were in attendance over the past four days, is led by Ellen Stutzman, David Goodman and Chris Keyser.

With an array of issues sought by the WGA, which is using a comprehensive bundle strategy in its demands this year, it appears the final sticking points are surrounding AI and staffing levels in writers room. Throughout Friday and today, the search for a mechanism to untangle those issues became frenzied at points, as both side attempt to wrap up negotiations ahead of the Yom Kippur holiday Monday.

Known as the Day of Atonement in the Jewish faith, Yom Kippur this year runs from sundown Sunday to sundown Monday.

Thousands of members of the WGA has been on strike since May 2 (today is the 145th day) seeking a new three-year film and TV contract. SAG-AFTRA, which has about 160,000 members joined their fellow guild on the picket lines in mid-July and has been out 72 days. The twin strikes have effectively shut down production in the industry ever since.

Negotiations between the WGA and the AMPTP have ended for the day on Saturday with the studios offering the Writers Guild what a source has described as their latest, best, and final offer, and which the WGA will now review. It’s expected that the guild will respond by tomorrow ahead of the Jewish holiday beginning at sundown on Sunday.

After three straight days of talks in which top Hollywood CEOs were in the room, both sides on Saturday brought in lawyers to finalize deal language on a new, three-year contract, considered the last step and the home stretch in negotiations. On Saturday, just two major deal points remained unsettled, with some reports suggesting that contract specifics around AI protections were among the sticking points.

A source told IndieWire the expectation was that a deal should get done before the start of Yom Kippur, but the WGA and AMPTP will meet again on Sunday when the WGA is expected to respond to the studios’ latest offer.

“The WGA and AMPTP met for bargaining on Saturday and will meet again on Sunday,” the two sides said late Saturday in a joint statement.

Specifics of the deal have not been publicized, but multiple media reports have suggested that the studios have made strides in areas pertaining to residuals, minimum staffing, AI, and data transparency, all key facets of the Writers Guild agenda.

Should the WGA’s negotiating committee approve the deal, it will go to the WGA East and West boards for approval before being sent to membership to ratify, along with the guild calling a vote among members to lift the strike.

If the WGA does not accept the latest studio offer, the two sides will have to return to the negotiating table, and it’s unclear when formal negotiations would resume or when a deal could be reached.

Saturday marks the 145th day of the strike, which began on May 2. The longest strike in guild history lasted 153 days back in 1988. If a deal is reached, all eyes will then turn to the actors and SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 14.

Jung Kook made his Global Citizen Festival solo debut on Saturday at the Great Lawn in New York’s Central Park where he unveiled a few surprises for Army, including performing “Seven” with unannounced guest Latto who sang her feature on their collab. His headlining set marked the first time a South Korean solo artist headlined the festival.

As fan footage from the event showcased, Jung Kook performed his summer hit, naming off the days of the week on the catchy chorus, flanked by a bevy of dancers. Towards the end of the song, Latto surprised fans as she made her way on stage to drop her verse.

The BTS member also delivered his first-ever performance of “Still With You,” his solo song that he first shared three years ago. “Thank you all for coming in the rain,” he told fans, who screamed their approval, before launching into the lyrics. “I love you guys.”

This year, the festival worked to help drive action to end extreme poverty, with a focus on its efforts on eliminating poverty in the Global South, along with gender inequities around the globe.

During an interview with Global Citizen, Jung Kook said, “Thank you for taking action to be here tonight. Let’s keep making an impact together to make sure everyone, everywhere has access to their basic rights.”

Trending

The set culminated with Jung Kook performing a medley of BTS hits, including their Number One singles “Permission to Dance,” “Dynamite,” and “Butter.” He ended the night with a video teaser for “3D,” his next solo release featuring Jack Harlow. His new single is set to arrive on Sept. 29.

“’3D’ is a R&B pop track that employs a witty use of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd dimensions to express one’s desire to be connected with someone,” BIGHIT MUSIC said in a statement confirming the upcoming song. “Following ‘Seven,’ the new track will showcase Jung Kook’s growth as a solo artist.”

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult.

What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you’ll probably need some for this game too.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It’s played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year.

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode – which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! – and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements – specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it’s difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle’s Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t blindly throw letters at it and expect to win – you’ll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That’s the case in Wordle too, of course, but it’s even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won’t want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe – but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you’re faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options – for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you’ll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It’s risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it’s the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure – you simply don’t have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Hollywood Casanova Pete Davidson is reportedly dating Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline.

It wasn’t long ago that the 29-year-old Saturday Night Live comedian was romantically linked with 27-year-old actor Chase Sui Wonders, but the Bodies Bodies Bodies costars allegedly split in August after about a year of dating. 27-year-old Cline also has an ex named Chase, so that’s at least one thing she and Davidson have in common!

Cline previously dated her Outer Banks star Chase Stokes after meeting on the set of the Netflix series in 2019. The on-screen love interests broke up in November 2021 after over a year together. Meanwhile, Davidson has built a reputation as a Hollywood serial dater due to his highly publicized relationships (and situationships) with the likes of Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, and Emily Ratajkowski, to name a few.

“I’m in my 20’s and I’ve dated people. And for some reason, that’s very crazy and interesting to people. I don’t think it’s interesting,” Davidson said on the Real Ones podcast in March, per People. “I’ve been in show business for, like, half my life almost—for 14 or 15 years and on a national TV show. In 12 years, I’ve dated 10 people. I don’t think that’s that crazy, but to some people, that’s very interesting. That became all anyone would talk about.”

He continued, “I’m not, like, flexing, you know what I mean? And these people that I’ve dated, I met them at work. I wasn’t in anyone’s DMs, no one was in mine.” So, how did everything start up with Cline? It’s not yet clear, but here’s everything we do know about their alleged relationship timeline in reverse chronological order.

September 22, 2023: UsWeekly reports that Pete Davidson and Madelyn Cline are dating, which sources also confirm to People. “Pete and Madelyn are dating. They spent the night together at the Beverly Hills Hotel and then had breakfast together there the next morning,” a source tells UsWeekly. “They were really low-key and kept things casual, wearing baseball hats.”

Tom Hiddleston’s Loki returns to the MCU with glorious purpose with a newly-announced schedule for his second season run.

Loki will come back for another six-episode season in early October. The MCU streaming series, whose first season became the most watched Marvel show on Disney+, will see the return of the title character alongside supporting characters like Mobius M. Mobius and Sylvie.

The Son of Odin’s newfound sense of heroism will be put to the test, however, when he goes up against the fearsome Victor Timely, played by embattled actor Jonathan Majors.

When Will Loki Season 2’s Episodes Release?

Marvel

The dates on which Loki’s second season episodes will arrive on Disney+ were officially laid out. These episodes were originally slated for Friday drops, but the schedule was changed after Lucasfilm’s Ahsoka adopted a new release scheme for its installments.

Now, each new episode of Loki Season 2 will follow Ahsoka’s path and come to the streamer on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET. The dates for each airing can be seen below:

  • Episode 1 – October 5
  • Episode 2 – October 12
  • Episode 3 – October 19
  • Episode 4 – October 26
  • Episode 5 – November 2
  • Episode 6 – November 9

It’s notable that the season finale for Loki is out just one day before Marvel Studios’ next feature film The Marvels’ theatrical debut. Loki’s season premiere also drops a mere 48 hours after Ahsoka concludes its eight-episode run.

Loki Season 2 Is on a Collision Course With The Marvels

Obviously, Loki will be the first of Marvel Studios’ series to not follow through with the formerly established release schedule. But what’s more than that, Season 2’s final episode will coincide with The Marvels’ big screen launch with just one day between their arrivals.

In fact, accounting for the film’s Thursday previews, there will indeed be some overlap between the two projects. This is good news for MCU fans, as they get a double MCU dose that weekend.

This sort of thing doesn’t often occur with Disney+ shows, but The Rise of Skywalker and a Season 1 episode of The Mandalorian did, in fact, drop on the same day back in 2019.

Marvel Studios’ Loki Season 2 premieres on Thursday, October 5.

Summary

  • Edward Cullen in Twilight and Bruce Wayne in The Batman share similarly reserved and brooding personalities, portrayed effectively by Robert Pattinson.
  • Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne has been praised, whereas his similar performance as Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga has been criticized.
  • Many flaws in the Twilight franchise, including Edward Cullen’s problematic relationship with Bella Swan and the limited material for Pattinson’s character, was what hindered his performance the most in the romance saga.

Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne in DC‘s The Batman shares certain qualities with his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga, yet he was criticized for his acting in the vampire romance movies but praised for the comic book film. Matt Reeves’ The Batman faced the challenge of reinventing the Caped Crusader as a grounded hero ten years after Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy raised the bar for realistic adaptations of the DC hero. Yet, The Batman measured up to the task and delivered an innovative take on a gritty Batman.

Robert Pattinson has been building a successful acting career with roles such as Ephraim Winslow a.k.a. Thomas Howard in Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, Neil in Tenet, Preston Teagardin in The Devil All The Time, and Bruce Wayne in DC’s Elseworlds movie, The Batman — all of which have helped the actor leave behind his controversial time as Edward Cullen, the vampire protagonist of the Twilight franchise. Despite his proven talent, Robert Pattinson has been criticized for his wooden, awkward, and even creepy performance in the Twilight movies. However, Edward Cullen and Bruce Wayne aren’t too different from each other.

Pattinson’s Batman Owes A Lot To Edward Cullen

Although reactions to Robert Pattinson’s casting as Batman weren’t unanimously positive at first, his performance has been widely regarded as a positive aspect of the movie. Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne starts out as a shut-in misanthrope with a quiet, brooding attitude. His stoic demeanor leads to awkward social interactions, though he doesn’t seem to mind them due to his obsession with one single goal. Unlike other Batman portrayals, Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne is far from being a playboy celebrity. Instead, he’s an outcast who receives weird looks whenever he’s in public.

Likewise, Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen is reserved, serious, and intimidating due to his odd behavior around people, even after opening up to Bella Swan. Edward’s self-loathing slowly unravels as he grows obsessed with Bella, though he isolates himself even more as the story progresses. Robert Pattinson portrays Bruce Wayne and Edward Cullen’s odd personalities and inner conflict quite effectively, but Twilight‘s many other flaws led his performance to come off as stilted and unintentionally funny, even though Pattinson’s acting skills weren’t the problem.

Why Twilight’s Movies Were So Divisive

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan in Twilight New Moon Poster

Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight novels were a massive phenomenon that rivaled the Harry Potter franchise in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The easily accessible but timeless premise of an impossible love between a human and a supernatural being landed at the right time, and the rise of social media helped it become a pop culture behemoth. However, Twilight‘s weaknesses were evident since the first movie adaptation was released. The Twilight movies were heavily criticized because they barely featured vampires and werewolves in their full glory, fell short in various technical departments like visual effects and make-up, and struggled to choose between a serious tone or a campy one.

Most importantly, the Twilight franchise was filled with problematic implications, including Edward and Bella’s toxic relationship, as well as Edward’s disturbing behavior, which included stalking Bella and watching her while she slept. The somber performance required from Robert Pattinson limited his portrayal and made his already questionable actions seem more perverted. Robert Pattinson simply had no material to play with. Edward had no chance to break out of his creepy mold throughout five Twilight movies, whereas The Batman‘s script justified Bruce Wayne’s personality with a character arc that left him with a very different outlook on life before the first sequel, Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, was even announced.
