NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft flung a capsule the size of a car tire onto a bombing range in Utah on Sunday, delivering safely to Earth a sample of the intriguing and potentially hazardous asteroid Bennu.
The capsule, released four hours earlier by the spacecraft, parachuted onto the Utah Test and Training Range. Recovery teams in four helicopters raced to the landing site in a carefully rehearsed effort designed to bag the capsule quickly to lower the risk of contamination.
They found the capsule on the desert floor, intact and sitting perfectly upright, as if it had taken pains to be presentable. A helicopter hauled the capsule on a 100-foot line to a specially prepared “clean room” in a military hangar. It will be flown Monday to the NASA Johnson Space Center in Texas for scientific study.
Mission managers, pleased with the trajectory of the spacecraft, had voted early Sunday morning to proceed with releasing the capsule. It spent four hours nearing Earth before plunging into the atmosphere at 27,000 miles per hour. The parent spacecraft then fired thrusters to ensure that it would not wind up in Utah, but would instead move on to another target, the asteroid Apophis, with a scheduled encounter in 2029.

After studios announced they had sent a “best and final offer” to the Writers Guild, the phrase was instantly dissected and mocked by the sharp-penned writers of Hollywood on X, where they’ve held nothing back since the strike began.
It’s worth noting that “best and final offer” is standard legalese – but that didn’t stop the fun. Horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan offered up a list of potential titles that included the studio’s phrasing, including “2 Best 2 Final,” “Final 6: A New Bestginning,” and more.
Writer George Samir Nader kept the trend going and contributed additional titles like “B&F: The Winter Solidarity,” “B&F: Infinity Walkout,” and “B&F: In the Multiverse of Studio Propaganda” among others.
Director and screenwriter Corey Deshon took a swipe at HBO when he tweeted, “It’s a ‘best and final offer’ from the people who brought you HBO Max I mean HBO Go I mean HBO Now I mean Max I mean.”
Screenwriter Megan Rees took a seasonal approach to the phrase and inquired, “Does anyone know if they have Halloween candy yet at Best & Final?”
Writer Shawn Wines quipped, “Did I miss anything? I was putting our best and final child to bed.”
Mo Ryan also saw a lot of parental energy in the phrasing and wrote, “It’s such patently ridiculous “wait til your father gets home!!” energy. Thousands of guild members have gone through hell to be spoken to like recalcitrant children? Sigh. Continue stepping on rakes, AMPTP, it is truly your thing.”
And then, of course, you have your wet blankets.
“I think best and final just means their lawyers reviewed their agreed terms as they understand them and passed them to WGA lawyers for review,” Brenden Gallagher tweeted. “Not worth remarking on IMO. Sorry to not be spicy.”

“We are thankful for the Californians because you are helping our market,” says real estate agent Trish Nash, of Douglas Elliman. “What started all this was COVID. We started to see people make lifestyle changes and really take a look at what their living situation was. And we started to see this influx of buyers from California, and it was just absolutely crazy.”
The craze for luxury homes continues. Las Vegas recorded its highest number of $1 million-plus sales in the first quarter of 2023, though median home sale prices have declined recently to around $415,000, after peaking in 2022 at $482,000. (In contrast, the current median sales price for a home in Los Angeles is around $980,000.)
It’s no longer just a place for Strip regulars like Wayne Newton and Donny and Marie Osmond; a new pack of power players led by Mark Wahlberg are relocating to Las Vegas, the land of no individual state income tax and lower-cost living. Nevada also has one of the country’s lowest property tax rates, at 0.55 percent, per Business Insider.
Last year, Wahlberg sold his 20-bedroom mansion in Beverly Park for $55 million and bought into the exclusive Summit Club in the Summerlin community, where he purchased a $14.5 million townhome and has also acquired a $15.6 million 2.5-acre lot. Wahlberg is also planning to build a production studio in the city. In March, he told Fox News it was “absolutely” his goal to turn Vegas into an entertainment industry center: “We’re looking to create 10,000 jobs in the studio alone. We want to train people both in front of and behind the camera, create jobs, most importantly, first and foremost, for locals … And then, after that, I think we can attract a lot of people. The housing market is great.” He’s also said that his family loves living there: “The kids are really happy, and it’s all about them.”
Concurs real estate agent Melissa Tomastik, of The Agency, “The value of the dollar stretches considerably farther in Las Vegas. Several of our clients have expressed that their real estate investment in Las Vegas equates to what they would have otherwise allocated toward taxes.”

CSI creator Anthony Zuiker — who grew up in Las Vegas and recently purchased a $6 million home in the suburb of Henderson — has seen the town go from a mob hangout to a first-class city. “We’re into the next level of professional sports, the A’s baseball, the Raiders, some really high-end, $2 billion Sphere, hotels, Resorts World,” he tells THR. “It’s definitely gone into a more fashion-forward direction.” The city will also welcome the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix in November and host the 2024 Super Bowl.
Some are buying because they have soured on California. Earlier this year, outspoken conservative Superman actor Dean Cain (who has said he opposes California’s fiscal, crime and homelessness policies) purchased a $3.9 million, five-bedroom modern contemporary in a gated community in Henderson. And venture capitalist Marc Andreessen — while continuing to own a record-breaking $177 million Malibu spread as well as a Tuscan-style mansion in Atherton, California — purchased a $36.2 million, 4.47-acre lot in The Summit Club in 2021. Last year, he tweeted, “Like Rome in maybe 250 A.D., we live amidst an enormous flowering of culture and creativity, but the roads are becoming unsafe and nobody is quite sure why.”
Other recent celeb real estate deals include Celine Dion’s sale in May of an estate in The Summit Club for $30 million (she still owns a $5 million home in Lake Las Vegas) and Oscar De La Hoya’s purchase of a $14.5 million mansion in Henderson in 2022.
Developers are doubling down on the new Vegas cachet. Gated communities like The Summit Club, MacDonald Highlands, The Ridges and Ascaya offer the luxury and security of Los Angeles without the sticker shock. “It feels like Las Vegas is just getting started from a growth perspective. Because of the influx of people we’ve had from other states, the luxury market has been continuously growing,” says agent Ivan Sher of IS Luxury, adding that, “We have a new playing field of sophistication and architecture and design.”

A rendering of the Four Seasons Private Residences Las Vegas, due to open in 2026 in the MacDonald Highlands community in Henderson; developed in partnership with Azure Resorts & Hotels and Luxus Developments, it will feature 171 high-rise condominiums and six stand-alone, family-style villas.
Four Seasons
The Four Seasons brand has also bought into the trend, with the Four Seasons Private Residences set to open in early 2026. And it seems that bet is paying off — of the 176 residences, which start at $3.5 million and go up to $29 million, 48 are already under contract, exceeding expectations. A home in The Summit Club is currently on the market for $23.5 million; listed with Coldwell Banker’s Lillie Shines, the 9,800-square-foot house features nine bedrooms (five in a private, attached casita) and an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven and bar on a parcel of just over one acre.
For decades, Las Vegas was where Zuiker escaped on the weekends, after spending his week working in Los Angeles. But now he’s living and working in Vegas full time, flying into Southern California for events. “I think things have flipped,” Zuiker says, “in terms of where we’re working and where we’re spending our weekends.”

An MCU producer explained the real reasoning behind the decision to have Maria Hill killed off in Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion.
Although Maria Hill was billed to be a major part of Disney+’s Secret Invasion as she got her long-awaited reunion with Nick Fury, her return didn’t last long at all as Cobie Smulders’ hero met her end in Episode 1.
She became the first major casualty in this series as Gravik took her out in Russia, leaving countless MCU fans disappointed as Smulders’ run with Marvel ended after 11 years in action.
In the recently released Marvel Studios Assembled episode centered on Secret Invasion, executive producer and writer Brian Tucker explained the real reason behind Maria Hill’s death upon her short return to the MCU.
Tucker explained that the team had to “really illustrate the scale and the reality of the danger” that Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Gravik and his group of rebel Skrulls posed to the humans of Earth.
To make that happen, there was no way for “all of [the] characters to make it out safely,” leading to the difficult decision to bring Cobie Smulders’ tenure as Maria Hill to an end:
“One of the kind of just most important decisions that we had to make early on was to really illustrate the scale and the reality of the danger that Gravik and his rebels pose to humans. And to do that, we couldn’t allow all of our characters to make it out safely. This is a contest for the planet. It’s being fought on the ground and it’s gonna be bloody. There will be casualties in this conflict, and that means making those tough decisions to say goodbye to beloved characters.”
This comes after Secret Invasion director Ali Selim confirmed in August that Hill was truly dead for good, noting that both she and Talos are “burned, and…buried:”
“I don’t know what’s going to happen to Maria Hill or Talos. They’re dead. One is burned, and the other is buried. But in the MCU, anything can happen. So, where are they going to end up? I don’t know.”
Killing off Maria Hill in Secret Invasion’s first episode certainly set the tone and let fans know just how dangerous the Skrulls were, putting Nick Fury and his team on their heels from the start.
But with Hill’s death being so unceremonious and Smulders expected to play a bigger role in Secret Invasion, fans were left wildly disappointed by what happened.
Marvel has put forth a valiant effort in celebrating Smulders’ tenure with the MCU since she was killed off in this series, highlighting her character all throughout the series’ run on Disney+.
But considering how much Secret Invasion seemingly disappointed fans and critics every week, this decision wasn’t something that helped make the story better in most fans’ eyes.
Secret Invasion is now streaming on Disney+.
Those who have grown up with the Percy Jackson book series might think that this new teaser trailer for the upcoming Disney+ show feels familiar. And that’s really the highest compliment you can pay an adaptation. So far, we’ve seen brief glimpses of the mythology-based series, but this is the first time we’re getting a good look at how the story will come to life. This new trailer for Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians finally introduces us to the adventure and, integrally, the quest that awaits us in the show. Percy Jackson may not have wanted to be a half-blood, but we sure can’t wait for his story to find its way back to our screens.
It’s hard out there for a half-blood. There are bad grades, bullies, all the normal stuff, and then there’s your teacher turning into a monster in front of your eyes. But that’s just life when your father is a god of Olympus. And not only that one of the Big Three, to boot. But, as Grover tells us in this teaser trailer for Percy Jackson & the Olympians, the important thing is not to panic. Got it! That will be important advice, though, as Percy sets off on a road trip across America to complete his quests. It’s a good thing he’ll have Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood by his side.
You can also take a look at a bunch of new images from Percy Jackson & the Olympians. These new looks at the series feature Percy, Annabeth, and Grover across their epic journey.
Additionally, alongside the Percy Jackson & the Olympians trailer, a release for the series shares more about its plot and cast. It notes:
Based on Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
And additionally:
The epic eight-episode series features exciting guest stars, some of which can be seen in [Percy Jackson & the Olympian‘s] teaser trailer, including Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hermes”), Megan Mullally (“Alecto” aka “Mrs. Dodds”), Toby Stephens (“Poseidon”), Virginia Kull (“Sally Jackson”), Jason Mantzoukas (“Dionysus” aka “Mr. D”), Jay Duplass (“Hades”), Glynn Turman (“Chiron” aka “Mr. Brunner”), the late Lance Reddick (“Zeus”), Adam Copeland (“Ares”), Charlie Bushnell (“Luke Castellan”), Dior Goodjohn (“Clarisse La Rue”), Jessica Parker Kennedy (“Medusa”), Olivea Morton (“Nancy Bobofit”), Suzanne Cryer (“Echidna”), Timm Sharp (“Gabe Ugliano”), Timothy Omundson (“Hephaestus”).
That’s quite a mouthful of guest stars; a heroic amount of them, in fact. And, as mentioned, you can glimpse more than one of them in the Percy Jackson trailer. There are many actors we’re excited to see, but especially the late Lance Reddick. We have no doubt his performance as Zeus will be powerful and wonderful.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians will release on Disney+ on December 20. It will have a two-episode premiere on that date, and new episodes will follow weekly. There is no news yet on what time Percy Jackson & the Olympians will release on Disney+, but we’re hoping it follows the 6:00 PM PT/9:00 PM ET Disney+ formula.

Cal Kestis actor Cameron Monaghan has said that he is currently working on a third Star Wars Jedi game.
During a panel at Ocala Comic Con, Monaghan said: “We’re working on a third and we’re in the process of doing that right now.
“That’s a big undertaking and there have been some conversations so far, but hopefully when all things and said and done we’ll be able to go in and make something really cool.”
This panel took place only shortly before Stig Asmussen, the director of both Star Wars Jedi games, announced that he was leaving developer Respawn Entertainment.
As reported by Bloomberg, Asmussen is leaving Respawn and its parent company EA, with his next destination currently unknown.
“After careful thought and consideration, Stig Asmussen has decided to leave Respawn to pursue other adventures, and we wish him the best of luck,” an EA spokesperson told Bloomberg in a statement.
“Veteran Respawn leaders will be stepping up to guide the team as they continue their work on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.”
Asmussen said back in February that he hoped to make a third Star Wars Jedi game.
“I always wanted to see this as a trilogy,” he told IGN at the time, speaking about the second game, Survivor. “How can we take Cal and the crew to new places beyond what we were doing in the first game?
“We had a pretty decent idea of timeframe where we wanted Survivor to take place, what the stakes were going to be, what the tone of the game was going to be, what Cal was going to be up against, and how the crew was going to factor into that. And there’s ideas of what we could do beyond that as well.”

Savannah Yarborough, a classically trained, Central Saint Martins-educated tailor, is sitting on a calf-hair-covered sofa thinking about the one-year anniversary of the Melrose Avenue outpost of her leatherwear store, Savas. “It may be a cliché,” she says, “but everybody came to L.A. to be someone and to do something, and a leather jacket is kind of a boost of that power.”
Yarborough, who grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, is known for her meticulously crafted custom leather jackets, first sold at her Nashville store in the city’s Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood, which opened in 2015. Yarborough likes to say that she “makes leather jackets for people who don’t wear leather jackets.
“People say they don’t wear leather jackets because in their mind, they’re envisioning a Marlon Brando vibe, but when I make them in a super-soft, suede shirt jacket that feels like the denim chambray shirt that you’d wear on a Sunday, it makes them question in their mind what a leather jacket is,” she tells THR while showing off a rack of new products, including a luxurious lightweight suede peacoat (from $4,500) and an ultra-luxe tie-dyed suede hoodie (from $3,700).
Her fastidious attention to detail, combined with the lightweight, lived-in feeling of her garments — all made at her workshop in New York City — has earned Yarborough fans across the spectrum, from music stars Jack White and Brandi Carlile to actors Damian Lewis and Brian Cox, who created an online stir wearing the saffron-colored suede Lowry shirt jacket ($2,700) with a pair of matching saffron suede Legend boots ($1,100) while promoting the final season of HBO’s Succession.
At Savas’ L.A. store at 6918 Melrose Ave. (ateliersavas.com), leather-good offerings include jackets, boots, skirts, jeans, belts and more.

Though the brand built its name on bespoke pieces, it also sells ready-made items and has introduced a made-to-measure program, where customers can adjust the fit from an existing pattern and choose fabrications. “The one thing that I’m honestly the most proud of is how well our jackets fit off the rack,” says Yarborough.

Brian Cox wore Savas’ suede Lowry shirt jacket and suede Legend boots in April.

New stand-out ready-to-wear offerings include The Denham from (from $2,500), a luxurious riff on the jean jacket done up in buttery soft leather or suede, or this fall’s The Dinner Jacket (from $4,500), a single-breasted, one-button peak lapel sport coat with front panels cut from a single piece, better to show off the hide and Yarborough’s handiwork. The Dinner jacket, with its 90s-inspired silhouette, is emblematic of Savas’s work. “Everyone wants to look 90s but nothing really fits from the 90s in the way they want and I thought, ‘How do we make something that’s very 90s— like a leather sport coat — and make it fit in a modern way,’” she says.
Says Derek Guy, known online as The Menswear Guy: “When I first saw her work a few years ago, I thought her operation was very special. She has her own world. She’s got the craft element. She’s making stuff that, if you really love craftsmanship and clothing, and if you don’t see yourself wearing Savile Row suits and sport coats, you can still get that experience of bespoke production.”
Grammy-winning musician Jason Isbell, a fan of the brand and the subject of the recently released HBO documentary Running With Our Eyes Closed, tells THR: “I like to dress pretty much the same on and offstage. I try to keep my music honest, so the lines between entertainer and regular guy tend to blur for me. Anytime I’m wearing Savas, I feel more confident, but in a way that isn’t ostentatious. I’m not trying to make anybody else feel underdressed; I just prefer a particular type of armor, built to last and made with care. And I like to look like I make rock ’n’ roll, because that’s who I am, not just what I do for work. Once I saw how Savannah does business and the quality of the clothes she makes, I was an instant fan.” One detail that Isbell (who’ll be seen in a supporting role in the upcoming Martin Scorsese film Killers of the Flower Moon) particularly appreciates is that “she’ll do buttons without sharp edges so I don’t scratch up my old guitars. Can’t beat that.”

Savas founder Savannah Yarborough.

Adds Nashville-based singer and artist Alison Mosshart, whose paintings will grace the walls of Savas’ L.A. store this fall: “Her leather jackets are so distinctive and cut so well. I always noted the cool personalized embroideries inside them, and it was impossible to miss that everyone in town was wearing her boots. If there was one place to visit and drool over custom leather goods, it was her shop, Savas.”
Continues Mosshart, whose new album God Games with her band The Kills, is set for an Oct. 27 release, “I think Savannah and I have similar tastes and when it comes to style and fashion and a desire for things to be unique and distinctive. She has the gift of being able to make things that she’s never seen, things that hadn’t previously existed, stuff based on dreams. something that completely compliments and suits the costumes’ individuality. It is no wonder she makes jackets for so many artists. We never want to wear what anyone else is wearing. We love things that feel personal and expressive and make us feel like lone rangers.”

Kerry Washington says her feelings of “not quite belonging” in her family that she’s had since childhood were a result of a long hidden secret that she was conceived using a sperm donor.
The actress opened up about the revelation in new interviews with The New York Times and People, tied to the release of her upcoming memoir, Thicker Than Water. Out on Sept. 26, the memoir was initially the suggestion of friend and Scandal boss Shonda Rhimes years ago, with Washington admitting that at the time, she had this “nagging feeling” she “didn’t quite know myself well enough” to pull it off.
Now, Thicker Than Water dives deep on her educational and performance journeys, but also more difficult topics, like her various mental health conditions — depression, an eating disorder and insomnia — as well as the shocking revelation that her father is not her biological parent.
That was something she discovered after wrapping her seven seasons as the lead of ABC hit Scandal and deciding to dig into her past with the help of the Henry Louis Gates Jr.-hosted PBS series Finding Your Roots. Washington told the New York Times that when she went to collect DNA spit samples for the show in 2018, her mother and father had noticeable hesitation. “I said: ‘I just don’t think they’re going to agree to it. My dad’s really uncomfortable,’” she recalled.
But Gates went to speak to her parents — Valerie, a professor, and Earl, a real estate agent — privately, which is when they asked about whether the possibility that Washington not being their biological child would “come up in the testing,” the actress said. In response, Gates suggested that they have any conversations about the nature of Washington’s lineage with them while they were all still alive.
“I’ve always had this weird disconnect with my dad, but I thought that was my fault. I thought I wasn’t a kind enough person. But the idea that I was not his never occurred to me. It was just, why can’t I be better to him? Why can’t we be closer? What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with us?” she said.
The Emmy-winning actress shared that she had mixed feelings once learning the truth, including liberation and excitement. But there were also feelings of guilt “because I could see how much pain my parents were in, my dad in particular” and resentment.
“I think that dissonance of like, ‘Somebody is not telling me something about my body’ made me feel like there was something in my body I had to fix,” she told People, noting that her feelings of not belonging led her eating disorder, anxiety and self-esteem issues.
Washington, who said her mother planned to tell her by leaving a note in a safe deposit box, likened the discovery, while speaking to the Times, to wandering through a library looking for a book about herself before her parents, the librarians, told her “there’s a room we haven’t shown you.’”
“I was birthed into a lie. I was playing a supporting character in my parents’ story,” she added. “I know that their intention was to protect me, to love me, to take care of me, to keep my world simple. I get many years of not telling me, but I’ve been an adult for over two decades.”
Washington has attempted to locate her biological father, but according to the Times, despite her “best efforts, there remains no way to determine his identity.” She also shared that, at one point, she “tried to give the publisher [Little, Brown Spark] their money back” as the book she pitched was no longer the book she could write.
The actress told People her decision to include the revelation in her memoir has been a difficult one for her parents, though they generally support her. She also says she “will be forever grateful to Skip Gates” and what she learned through her experience with his show. “I’m still missing this piece of not knowing where half of my biology comes from,” she told the New York Times. “At least I don’t have any of the wrong pieces in the puzzle anymore.”

The 2022 breakout hit Fall has a sequel on the way, and now the original film has received a 4K SteelBook release exclusive to Best Buy. This is particularly exciting as when the Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner-led movie received its initial home release, it was only on Blu-ray and DVD, so both the SteelBook and 4K release are new. It also features the unrated version rather than the PG-13 theatrical release that saw the original film edited to take out cursing.
“For best friends Becky and Hunter, life is all about conquering fears and pushing limits. But after they climb 2,000 feet to the top of a remote, abandoned radio tower, they find themselves stranded with no way down,” says the synopsis. Now Becky and Hunter’s expert climbing skills will be put to the ultimate test as they desperately fight to survive the elements, a lack of supplies, and vertigo-inducing heights in this adrenaline-fueled thriller from the producers of 47 Meters Down.”
Fall is a total blast to watch, which is why it became a real hit after it became available to stream last year. Both Currey and Gardner give great performances as the two leads, both doing everything they can to desperately survive and make contact while stranded on an abandoned radio tower. There are a number of surprising twists and turns despite the limited scope of the film, with it really making the most out of its potential.
A lot of the reason why the action really delivers was due to Currey and Gardner being outside and the harsh filming conditions making the performance all the more realistic. “I think Ginny and I, we got a lot of help from actually being outside in the elements. There’s pros and cons, the pros are that you actually are sweating, exhausted, fighting dehydration from being in the sun all day, and just the most insane temperatures of heat,” Currey told ComingSoon last year. “Insane wind speeds also, that you just get so exhausted from being knocked around all day by the wind. Like we’re talking such strong winds that we’d have to come down from the tower sometimes because it got dangerous for us to be up there.”
Not only is the 4K release the best-looking version of Fall yet, and takes full advantage of HDR, it also includes a new bonus feature in the form of an 18-minute featurette titled “Creating the Impact of Fall.” This video features director Scott Mann and other cast and crew discussing the surprise success of the movie, its themes, and why it has really registered with audiences. Both the 4K and Blu-ray discs also include the other previously released bonuses: a commentary track with Mann and producer James Harris, an “I Have Never Felt More Alive” music video by Madison Beer, and a “Fall: The Making of” featurette. It’s a really solid package, and the fact that Lionsgate added a new feature (and included all of the special features on the 4K release) is great to see and shows a lot of care from the distributor.
As for the SteelBook, it features all-new artwork from Chris Christodoulou. The slipcover is used really nicely as it features a daytime view of the leads stuck on the tower, while the SteelBook features the same sight at nighttime. The back features the vulture from the film, and the inside has gorgeous art that shows the height of the tower if held vertically. It’s a really nice upgrade from the Blu-ray that was released last year from a presentation and feature standpoint.
If you’re looking to own Fall, then this is the definitive version to get. Not only are you receiving a better-looking 4K release, you’re also getting a meaningful behind-the-scenes featurette. The thriller still delivers plenty of excitement and vertigo-inducing chills upon rewatch and is fun from start to finish.

Next year, it will be Sajak out. Seacreast in, as Ryan Seacrest takes over the iconic game show as of September 2024 from longtime host Pat Sajak.
With a change of regmines, you might expect some differences when Seacrest takes the reins. You’d be wrong.
“With this game show, it’s such a success and has been for generations,” Seacrest said in a new interview with People. “You don’t mess with it, just don’t mess with it. Just get out of the way, say ‘good evening,’ and let’s play.”
Holdover Vanna White will still be turning letters and showing Seacrest the ropes when he takes over at Wheel of Fortune.
White has a new deal that runs through the 2025-2025 season.
“This is such great news,” Seacrest, 48, told Willie Geist earlier this month in the “Sunday Sitdown” segment of his Sunday Today with Willie Geist. “Vanna has been such a staple on that show and in our living rooms for so many years. I have been very excited to work with her, but now that it’s official I can say, ‘Congratulations Vanna! I can’t wait.’ ”
Next year, it will be Sajak out.
Rod Wave captures his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Sept. 30) as his latest release, Nostalgia, opens atop the tally. The set bows with 137,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Sept. 21, according to Luminate — the rapper/singer’s biggest week yet by units earned. Nearly all of the album’s first-week sum was driven by streaming activity of the set’s 18 tracks.
The artist previously led the Billboard 200 with his last two full-length projects, Beautiful Mind (2022) and SoulFly (2021). He’s only the second artist, following Taylor Swift, to have notched a new No. 1 album in each of the last three years. In total, Nostalgia is his sixth top 10-charting effort — the entirety of his entries on the Billboard 200.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Sept. 30, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (Sept. 26). For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.
Of Nostalgia’s 137,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 21, SEA units comprise 135,000 (equaling 187.51 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 18 songs — the third-largest debut streaming week for an R&B/hip-hop album in 2023), album sales comprise 1,500 (it was only available to purchase as a digital download album) and TEA units comprise 500.
Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts falls to No. 2 after debuting atop the tally, as the set earned 134,000 in its second week (down 56%). Four more former No. 1s round out the top six, as Zach Bryan’s self-titled album is a non-mover at No. 3 (79,000; down 17%), Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time is stationary at No. 4 (76,000; down 3%), SZA’s SOS rises 6-5 (53,000; up 17%) and Travis Scott’s Utopia falls 5-6 (47,000; down 16%).
Peso Pluma’s Génesis is steady at No. 7 (46,000 equivalent album units; up 7%), Swift’s chart-topping Midnights stands still at No. 8 (42,000; up 1%) and Wallen’s former leader Dangerous: The Double Album holds at No. 9 (38,000; down 2%). The Barbie film soundtrack closes out the top 10, as it steps 11-10 with 36,000 units (down 4%).

FANTASTIC FEST 2023 REVIEW! The one thing I love about foreign films is they can tell stories that could never be told under the progressive Hollywood system. Croatian directors David Kapac and Andrija Mardesic tell a story of a family at Christmas in The Uncle that’s wrong on all levels and with an ending that will piss off the fragile and sensitive.
The Uncle opens with a family, Olec (Goran Bogdan), Majka (Ivana Roscic), and son, Sin (Roko Sikavica), as they prepare for a Christmas visit from their Uncle Stric (Predrag “Miki” Manojlovic. The trio works feverishly to prepare the “perfect” Christmas dinner. Already, the night is ruined when Majka breaks a plate because now the place settings won’t match, and Sin is wearing the same Christmas sweater from last year.
Like clockwork, Uncle Stric arrives and demands a hug from his brother, commends Sin on being his favorite nephew, and snaps Majka’s bra strap while complementing her perky breasts. The turkey dinner is tense as the family tries desperately to appease every one of Stric’s criticisms. Majka is put off by his constant berating of her parenting style, and when nothing else could go wrong, Majka burns the cookies. At least Christmas is over.
“…Uncle Stric returns to the house, and the family reenacts the exact same Christmas dinner…”
A few days later, Uncle Stric returns to the house, and the family reenacts the exact same Christmas dinner, greetings, and conversation from before. The process repeats over and over in a sort of sadistic Groundhog Day.
The Uncle is a very dark comedic thriller, but it’s more dark than it is funny. This Christmas plays over several times throughout the film, and unlike Groundhog Day, there’s no magic. There’s a reason Uncle Stric keeps coming back to replay the same Christmas night over and over again and a reason why the family goes along with it. When it’s revealed to start the second act, everything gets really dark and really twisted.
I’m leaving a lot out for spoiler’s sake. There are twists and turns galore and a bit of psychological torture being inflicted with each inflection. I’ll mention several instances of hand jobs and masturbation and leave it at that. The story then gets really creepy, leading to an ending that is so unsatisfying according to American standards, and I love it.
I wish I could tell you more, but the cast gives an outstanding, understated performance. As secrets are revealed, the subtext of their characters’ arcs becomes crystal clear as the puzzle pieces are laid into place. It’s killing me that I can’t say more. See this film.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit are being brought in after a police chase in Guelph resulted in a fatal crash.
At around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Guelph Police Service were called to do a well-being check of a man who was also the subject of an arrest warrant.
Officers were able to locate the man who was driving a pick-up truck in the area of Victoria Street and York Road.
SIU investigators say the man fled after being spotted by police. A police chase ensued which ended with the pick-up striking two civilian vehicles at Victoria and Clair Road.
They say the pick-up truck then rolled over several times.
The lone occupant in the pick-up was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
No other information is being released at this time.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have security or dashcam video should contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.

David Byrne met A24’s young fans as the Talking Heads Stop Making Sense is set to gross $800,673 from 264 Imax screens in North America this weekend. Its cumulative gross of $1.43 million includes Thursday screenings and a live event at TIFF for this remastered version of the 1984 Jonathan Demme-directed concert film ranked by critics as one of the best ever.
Nearly 60% of the audience was under 35 — not alive when the movie came out — and more than half said it was their first time seeing the film.
Stop Making Sense ran on a limited schedule with less than two shows on average at each location, and many screenings turning into dance parties. It expands nationwide next weekend to about 500 theaters and will play out like a regular release — an unusually long tail for a 40-year-old film. A footprint of theaters plans to keep playing it on weekends after its run.
The iconic band is now ensconced with Millennials and Gen Z as frontman David Byrne’s “big suit” meme does the rounds on social media. He grabbed the spotlight waving hotdog hands as he performed This Is A Life, the Oscar-nominated song from Everything Everywhere All At Once, at the Academy Awards. American Utopia, Byrne’s 2019 Broadway show based on a 2018 album and tour was filmed by Spike Lee and released by HBO in 2020. (Its run cut short by Covid, the show returned live in the fall of 2021 through spring of 2022.)
Stop Making Sense breakdown: Friday – $332.9k; Sat. $267.3k; Sun. – $200.4k. LA’s TLC Chinese theater was the top grossing and numbers were strong in NY, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. as well as regional markets from Sacramento to Indianapolis and Detroit.
The film’s 4K restoration, which also opened in select theaters in the U.K. and Ireland, has delivered $1.6M globally for Imax so far, including $725k from the live and encore screenings earlier this month. The iconic band’s reunion for that 40th anniversary at the Toronto International Film Festival was the large-format exhibitor’s highest grossing live event to date.
Other openings: Neon’s It Lives Inside by Bishal Dutta grossed an estimated $2.63 million at 2,005 theaters.
Creation of the Gods 1: Kingdom of Storms from Well Go USA took in $441.1k in 111 theaters.
Kappa Films’ release of I Can saw a $148k weekend at 135 locations.
IFC Films opened The Origin of Evil in 206 theaters to a debut of $45.9k.
My Sailor, My Love from Music Box Films debuted in 35 locations to $27.4k.
Circle Collective’s anthology feature What Doesn’t Float earned $5k from three sold-out shows at Roxy Cinema in Tribeca.

During her Renaissance World Tour stops in L.A., Beyoncé caused a run on sparkly fashion with a silver dress code directive. It’s a favored metallic the megastar also rocked back in March when she offered a peek into hubby Jay-Z’s ultra-exclusive post-Oscars Gold Party. In the GIF she posted, she’s wearing a customized mirrored mini covered in feathery paillettes by Retrofête.
“I design what I like to call over-the-top ready-to-wear — catering to both the everyday and life’s biggest moments,” says Israel-born Ohad Seroya, who co-founded the New York City-based label in 2018 with his husband, Aviad Klin.
Beyoncé’s outfit reveal to 316 million ardent followers went viral immediately — the brand itself gained 5k followers from reposting it — and influenced the influencers. Requests for Retrofête silver pieces, including from VIPs like Chrissy Teigen, Kerry Washington and Gabrielle Union, spiked 392 percent in May through early September compared to the first quarter of 2023.

Now, with premieres and many awards ceremonies on pause during Hollywood’s double strike, red carpet opportunities remain limited for actors and brands alike — which means Instagram is more important than ever as a spot to spotlight fashion. “They have to continue to try to find moments where people say, ‘Oh, yeah, this person looks great. This person is a fashionista. This person understands fashion,’” says Zadrian Smith of styling duo Zadrian + Sarah. “That becomes just doing your everyday stuff, like going on holiday [and posting it].”

Winnie Harlow celebrated her birthday in Retrofête.

For model Winnie Harlow’s birthday bash in July, Zadrian + Sarah jumped on Retrofête’s crochet maxi-dress with starfish embroidery. The look conjures a fisherman’s net catching “this beautiful Winnie Harlow mermaid,” says Smith. Harlow invited her 10.3 million IG followers into her boisterous night through multiple galleries. “That look ran everywhere,” says Tia-Marie Yan, Retrofête PR manager of celebrity & VIP.
Also this summer, stylist Heather Smith dressed Alessandra Ambrosio (who has 12 million followers on Instagram) in a shell-embellished gold-mesh minidress for a private yacht soirée in Ibiza. “When people feel good in their outfit, they’re going to post it on social,” says Smith, who regularly pulls Retrofête. “Obviously, social is just as good, if not better, than a red carpet.”
The onslaught of music festivals and mega-tours has increased demand for Retrofête’s high-shine, TikTok-ready pieces. “Right now there are huge, huge requests in concert [looks],” says Yan. Retrofête regular Sofía Vergara bought a rhinestone pinstripe corset set for Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour — and shared the evening with 31.2 million. And Blackpink members Jennie, Rosé and Jisoo have worn sequined, beaded and fringed looks during their Born Pink World Tour.

Yan emphasizes that celebrity placements are always carefully curated loans from future, unavailable seasons rather than freely distributed gifts from the current one: “That makes it more exclusive because we don’t just throw $800 dresses out there and hope that it’ll stick.”
Retrofête also nimbly responds to viral moments. For instance, upon receiving confirmation that Selena Gomez would wear a glitter-pinstriped pantsuit for a 2022 Saturday Night Live promo, the web team quickly made the outfit available online for preorders.
Marking its five-year anniversary, Retrofête made its New York Fashion Week debut with a Spring 2024 show that nods, says Seroya, to his “formative experiences” — music fests and jet-setting parties — which are also occasions for which people flock to Retrofête. Actor Joel Kinnaman and model Jordyn Woods sat front row.

Top models Shanina Shaik, Yasmin Wijnaldum and Elsa Hoska walked Retrofête’s first-ever NYFW show Sept. 11.

Ahead of Oscar season (assuming the strikes aren’t ongoing), the show also marks an expansion from ’grammable ready-to-wear into custom design with an eye toward elevating itself as a red carpet label of choice. “The fashion show,” says Yan, “is going to open a lot of doors for us to cater to dressier, one-of-a-kind pieces.”

Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson has made a number of explosive claims about the Trump administration in her upcoming book “Enough.” Hutchinson kept quiet about what she witnessed during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol until she was called to testify in the June 2022 hearings on the event. After that, she went into a semi-state of hiding and moved to Atlanta, Georgia for several months after her legal team advised her to leave Washington.
Threats of violence and harm precipitated the move, an unexpected departure for a woman who had managed to climb to the upper echelon of the Oval Office during Trump’s presidency.
“I was the conduit to the White House chief of staff,” she told CBS News’ Tracy Smith. “Pretty much, to get to him, you had to go through me in some capacity.”
Hutchinson writes in her book that the first lawyer she worked with was paid for by a Trump PAC. She was told to “remember” and say little against Trump and his colleagues. While preparing for that experience, she read up on the Watergate scandal and on Alexander Butterfield, the Richard Nixon aide who uncovered the taping system in the White House that led to the president’s resignation.
She reached out to Butterfield, who became “a source of strength.” The two formed a friendship that helped her see “that there was life on the other side of” coming clean about what she saw and experienced in the Trump White House.
Hutchinson’s testimony has been denied by White House deputy chief of staff Tony Ornato, Secret Service agent Bobby Engel and Trump himself. Last week, the former president told “Meet the Press” that “She’s … the craziest account I’ve ever heard. You mean that I was in the Beast, and she said I was in the Beast, and the Secret Service didn’t want – so I took a guy who was like a black belt in karate and grabbed his neck and tried to choke him. How ridiculous.”
Still, Hutchinson is pressing forward. Her book “Enough” will be available online and in bookstores on Tuesday.

Doja Cat, 27, called out the Kardashians and their cosmetic surgery, in her new song “Wet Vagina.” The new track is included in her studio album, Scarlet, which was released on Friday, and it doesn’t hold back when referencing a “plastic” face. “Tell me why ol’ shorty walkin’ like she got a stick in her ass, and pretty face plastic, it’s givin’ Kardashian,” the lyric reads.
Although Doja didn’t name one specific Kardashian in the tune, she did reference Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s daughter North West in another song called “97.” It was about the time the young talent performed a remix of ZaZa‘s “What I Do” in 2020 when she was six years old. “Yeah, said these are clothes, motherf**ker, what are those?” she rapped, referring to North’s rapped lyrics, which brought Kim to tears and got a lot of attention across the internet.
In addition to the ZaZa cover, North has showed off her love of rap a number of other times in public, proving she takes after her dad when it comes to musical passion. Back in January, she lightheartedly lip synced to a rap song in a TikTok video, which can be seen below, as her mom looked on in the background, making many followers laugh and jam along. She has also lip synced to a bunch of other tunes, including “Yonce x Big Poppa,” which is a remix to the Notorious B.I.G.‘s “Big Poppa.”
When Doja’s not getting attention for her songs about the Kardashians and North, she’s doing so for her social media posts. She recently shared a photo of her looking sad in a neck brace, but assured her fans she was fine, in the caption. “i’m fine my neck is fine,” she wrote. She also admitted she simply “stole” the neck brace from a friend who had whiplash.
@kimandnorth Period ahhhhh
“My lovely date got whiplash and he takes [the brace] off sometimes. So, I just stole it from him,” she told Entertainment Tonight, when asked about the neck brace photo during her appearance at Victoria’s Secret The Tour event launch. “I’m literally fine. Completely fine. My neck is great.”

Warner Bros.’ “The Nun II” topped the domestic box office for the third straight weekend as Lionsgate’s “Expendables” franchise plummeted to an all-time low.
“The Nun II” scared up $8.4 million in its third outing for a North American cumulative of $69.2 million, while “Expend4bles” launched at $8.3 million in the United States and Canada, according to estimates from measurement firm Comscore.
The action saga starring Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone has followed the movie industry’s law of diminishing returns for sequels. Its predecessors — “The Expendables” (2010), “The Expendables 2” (2013) and “The Expendables 3” (2014) — debuted at $34.8 million, $28.6 million and $15.9 million, respectively, per Box Office Mojo.
The latest installment in the series fell short of already-modest projections, which ranged from about $15 million to $17 million domestically.
Rounding out the top five at the domestic box office this weekend were Disney and 20th Century Studios’ “A Haunting in Venice,” which grossed $6.3 million in its sophomore outing for a North American haul of $25.4 million; Sony Pictures’ “The Equalizer 3,” which made $4.7 million in its fourth run for a North American cumulative of $81.3 million; and Warner Bros.’ “Barbie,” which collected $3.2 million in its 10th weekend for a North American total of $630.5 million.
It’s worth noting that Greta Gerwig’s feminist blockbuster is still among the top five performers at the box office more than a week after the movie went to streaming.
Directed by Scott Waugh, “Expend4bles” sees Statham’s Christmas and Stallone’s Barney recruit a fresh team of mercenaries for a dangerous new mission. Among the returning cast members are Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture, while franchise newcomers include Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran and Andy Garcia.
The film received a dreadful 16% rotten rating on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes and a B-minus grade from audiences polled by CinemaScore. Adding insult to injury, film critic Katie Walsh called the title “the opposite of a must-see.”
“As Christmas chortles atop an all-terrain vehicle while wielding a .50 caliber weapon, it looks like the whole thing could have been shot with rear projection, the green-screen work is so shoddy,” Walsh writes in her review for Tribune News Service.
“The moment is so incredibly bad and unbelievably wacky that one simply has to laugh in disbelief. But that’s far preferable to the rest of the film, which is mind-numbingly dull.”
Opening in wide release next week are Sony Pictures’ “Dumb Money,” Disney and 20th Century Studios’ “The Creator,” Outsider Pictures’ “Saturday Night Inside Out” and Shout! Studios’ “The Kill Room,” as well as Lionsgate’s “Saw X” and Paramount Pictures’ “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” — a.k.a. “Saw Patrol,” the internet’s unofficial follow-up to “Barbenheimer.”

Marvel finally confirmed how old Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is, and it is a little different than what fans previously thought.
The Marvels is set to arrive in theaters on November 10, and since that release date is creeping closer, marketing for the film continues to ramp up.
For example, a recent trailer featurette showcased all three of the upcoming film’s female stars – Brie Larson (Carol Danvers), Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau), and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel).
One of the big questions that fans have regarding superheroes is their age. The Marvels director Nia DaCosta already recently revealed how old Kamala will be in the upcoming film, so now, many continue to debate just how old Carol is.
In an official X (formerly Twitter) post from the Marvel India account, a graphic revealed that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers is actually over 60 years old in human years.
The post doesn’t give a specific age and only shows “60+,” but that number still comes as a bit of a shock to fans.
Many fans believed since Larson was 28 years old when filming Captain Marvel that her character would be the same age in the year that the film took place (1995).
If that was the case, it would mean that Carol was born sometime in 1967, which would make her around 56 years old in the year 2023.
Some fans have made compelling arguments that state she was actually born in 1965, but that would still only put her age at around 58 years old.
Since The Marvels is set in 2025, many believed that Carol would be anywhere from 58 to 60 years old, so the confirmation that she is actually older than 60 is definitely a bit of a surprise.
It might throw many fans off to watch Captain Marvel and then Avengers: Endgame and see that Carol Danvers looks the exact same despite the two films being set 28 years apart.
It would be understandable to theorize that she simply doesn’t age due to her cosmic powers, but the actual explanation has to do with her blood.
Carol does actually age just like any other living being, but since she received a blood transfusion from Yon-Rogg, that means that she has Kree DNA, and Kree age much slower than humans do.
Therefore, Carol may be over 60 years old in human terms, but that Kree DNA explains why she still looks pretty much the same as she did in Captain Marvel.
The Marvels premieres in theaters on November 10.
DC movies have historically excelled at mixing humorous and serious moments, but unfortunately for the storied brand, sometimes scenes end up funnier than they were supposed to be. Whether it be overly dramatic acting or lines that don’t sound as natural spoken as they look written in a script, it can be borderline confusing who some DC scenes have made it to the final cut. Regardless, from classic DC films to modern superhero epics, there are plenty of scenes that weren’t supposed to elicit laughs.
These films can be hard to watch, but they are also hard to forget. Many of the most memorable moments in superhero movies have come from DC’s worst films, although it’s usually not for the right reason. Even in their most successful movies, there are still some awkward or mishandled moments that come across as unintentionally hilarious. Here are 10 of the most unintentionally funny moments from DC movies.
Talia al Ghul was the surprise villain at the end of The Dark Knight Rises who was the true mastermind behind Bane’s plan. After crashing the truck containing the bomb, Talia is mortally wounded and dies. However, her death is very abrupt, and it looks like she quickly went to sleep rather than dying. It’s surprising that an actor as talented as Marion Cotillard would have a death scene this awkward, but it’s equally surprising that director Christopher Nolan decided this was the take he wanted to leave in the film.
Val Kilmer does a surprising amount right with his portrayal of Batman and Bruce Wayne. Unfortunately, he only appeared in Batman Forever, one of the lesser films in the Batman franchise. However, there is one moment where Kilmer succumbs to the goofiness of Joel Schumacher’s Batman universe. After speaking with his love interest, Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman), Batman turns around and gives a hilarious smile right to the camera. It’s meant to be humorous, but Kilmer’s smile looks so much funnier while behind the tight mask of the caped crusader.
There are dozens of unintentionally hilarious moments from Batman & Robin. There’s the bat credit card, Batman and Robin ice skating, and over-the-top shots of the suits, fully equipped with bat-nipples. However, the most iconic part of Batman & Robin is all of Mr. Freeze’s ice puns, delivered remarkably well by Arnold Schwarzenegger. One could make the argument that these were intended to be funny, but a few of them are exclaimed in a serious, chilling tone. The movie tries to make them work, but it’s impossible not to laugh at “What killed the dinosaurs? The ice age!“
Catwoman is another failed flick that gets so many things wrong. For instance, Halle Berry is playing a character named Patience Phillips, not Selina Kyle, even though the movie is called Catwoman. The CGI is laughable, her suit is terrible, and the filmmaking is all over the place. One scene where the poor filmmaking is most obvious is during a flirtatious basketball game between Berry and Benjamin Bratt. It’s horribly edited and features some incredibly awkward acting between the two actors. Both actors are talented, but even they can’t save this remarkably weird scene.
Paul Dano as The Riddler in The Batman is one of the scariest adaptations of a Batman villain. The way he operated as a twisted serial killer made him a threatening foe for Robert Pattinson’s Batman. While his unhinged performance often worked, Dano’s decision to start singing Ave Maria while talking to prison in Batman is more funny than scary. Yes, the track is a recurring motif for his character, but his singing style contradicts Michael Giacchino’s sinister score and Pattinson’s brooding performance.
Michael Shannon as General Zod in Man of Steel is one of the better villains in the DCEU. He delivers a haunting performance as an all-powerful villain who is determined to save his people and keep Krypton alive. However, he did over-deliver a few times as director Zack Snyder often demands powerful, dramatic performances from his actors. One moment is at the beginning of the film when he is about to be sent to eternal prison and delivers the line “I will find him,” referencing Kal-El. It’s an over-the-top delivery that is more corny than menacing. It also doesn’t help that he is then frozen and sent off in a rather phallic imprisoning device.
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is undoubtedly the worst of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. It has one of the funniest villains ever with Nuclear Man, an antagonist who is powered by the sun and has the ability to grow his fingernails. However, the most hilarious scene comes when Superman and Nuclear Man’s battle causes damage to the Great Wall of China. To fix the damage, Superman uses his vision to rebuild the landmark paired with very dated CGI. It’s unclear when Superman got the ability to fix buildings with his mind, but this movie has many other logical errors.
Cheetah is one of Wonder Woman’s archenemies from the comics, but translating that character into live-action presented a challenge. Kristen Wiig did an admirable job in the role, but she couldn’t save the role once she turned into an “apex predator.” Not only does Cheetah’s design make her look like she should be singing about Jellicle Cats, but the fight is poorly lit to hide the uncanny CGI. The fight between her and Wonder Woman is cartoonish as the two characters swing around and Cheetah jumps off the side of buildings. She is then electrocuted underwater but somehow still survives.
Suicide Squad struggled to introduce audiences to all of its characters. Every character had a noisy montage filled with poor editing and lousy exposition. However, the character who received the worst intro was Katana. She jumps onto a helicopter featuring all of Task Force X and is given the laziest intro from Colonel Rick Flag. He introduces her name, what she does, and why her sword is so dangerous. It’s lousy exposition and quickly became an example of what not to do in screenwriting when introducing a character.
The epic confrontation between Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman was highly anticipated. While the fight itself is entertaining, it’s stifled by an anticlimactic ending. After subduing Superman, Batman comes close to killing him with a kryptonite spear. In a last-ditch effort, Superman begs Batman to save his mother who is named Martha. When he hears that name, he remembers his own mother, also named Martha, and spares Superman. This scene is an important part of Batman’s character as he recognizes the humanity in Kal-El since he has a mother just like everyone else. However, it comes across as bizarre since Batman’s determination to defeat Superman ends simply because the two DC heroes have moms’ with the same name.

A trio of official Kirby figures are joining Bandai Spirits Banpresto’s Amicot Petit line. The collection includes two-inch tall Kirby and Waddle Dee figures and a 1.6-inch tall Sleeping Kirby model. All three plastic figures feature the Amicot Petit model line’s unique “knit” design reminiscent of hand-stitched wool plushies, plus an Amicot Petit tag as proof of authenticity. The figures are what we’d imagine a Kirby’s Epic Yarn follow-up could have looked like if it was in the style of Yoshi’s Woolly World.
The Amicot Petit Kirby collection will launch on March 15, 2024, and you can preorder each figure for $20 apiece at Amazon.
Each Amicot Petit Kirby Collection figure is adorable–the Sleeping Kirby might be one of the cutest figures we’ve ever seen–and chances are the collection’s collective cuteness will win over other Kirby fans, so it’s wise to preorder now in case they sell out.
It’s also worth checking out Banpresto’s official Amazon page to see the company’s other video game- and anime-themed figure lines. There are plenty of other upcoming models to check out from popular franchises like One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, and more.
If you’re looking for even more preorder deals on collectible figures, the rare Fortress Maximus Transformers is coming back and preorders are available now. There’s also a new Lego Super Mario Piranha Plant set on the way, as well as a new set of Fortnite Funko Pops available for preorder at Amazon.

With the WGA and the AMPTP meeting again today to try and hash out a deal, members of the guild are back out on the picket line.
Deadline understands that a group of around 35 writers have come out on a Sunday to picket Dancing with the Stars at TV City.
It is the latest picket targeting the ABC show, which is set to premiere on Tuesday. Deadline revealed last week that the BBC Studios-produced show had a raft of picketing during its rehearsals.
The writers were targeting talent such as Matt Walsh and Mira Sorvino in a variety of locations around Hollywood. It also worked, to some extent, as the Veep star, who is a member of the WGA, decided to pause his involvement in the show. ABC has also put plans in place postpone the September 26 premiere, although there was the hope that a deal would have been done by then to allow them to go ahead without any more picketing.

It’s believed that producers are inside TV City doing prep ahead of Tuesday.
The writers say that they’re picketing to show the WGA Negotiating Committee that they have their back and they’re not quitting.
It’s expected that the writers will be back out at TV City again tomorrow and Tuesday, depending on how talks go.

The report indicates De Niro will be riffing on Bickle’s classic lines in a series of spots. The 1976 Martin Scorsese film is set in a noirish New York, with De Niro’s Travis Bickle cab driver slowly deteriorating into a vigilante. De Niro was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor.
Schrader noted the Uber ad report in a Facebook post.
“Ouch,” he wrote. “Why Bob would do this is beyond my reckoning. But I haven’t seen it. If I’m lucky I never will.”
The line believed to be used in the Uber ad shows the deeply disturbed Bickle beginning to talk to himself in the mirror, role-playing imagined scenarios. “You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me? Well, then who the hell else are you talking – You talking to me? Well, I’m the only one here. Who the f**k do you think you’re talking to?”
Schrader is currently shooting Oh, Canada with Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi.

If there is one thing Doctor Who fans know, it’s that the Doctor is nothing without their companions – and the Doctor themself would agree – though there is one companion who is arguably the coolest of them all that Doctor Who TV fans have never even met (even if they have heard of them): Shayde.
In Doctor Who (2005) season 3, episode 9 “The Family of Blood”, Doctor Who‘s Tenth Doctor (played by David Tenant) is forced to use what is known as the Chameleon Arch to change his biology/anatomy to that of a human while removing his Time Lord essence and keeping it in a biodata module. The reason he did this was that the Doctor was on the run from the Family of Blood, who were hunting the Doctor in an effort to steal his virtually immortal essence. So, the Tenth Doctor decided the best course of action was to lie low as a human for a while and essentially wait for the Family of Blood to die. However, that transition wasn’t just biological, but also psychological. He didn’t remember that he was actually a Time Lord, despite the lingering, fractured memories that came to him in dreams. In order to cope with these strange visions, the Doctor – who went by his human name, John Smith – kept a journal where he wrote down/drew the details of these dreams, and one thing that was included in this Journal of Impossible Things was a companion he had when the Doctor was the Fifth Doctor and again as the Eighth Doctor, a companion called Shayde.
That brief mention in season 3, episode 9 was the most TV fans got from the companion Shayde, while fans of the many Doctor Who comic book series got much, much more. Debuting in 1982’s Doctor Who Monthly story titled “The Tides of Time” by Steve Parkhouse and Dave Gibbons, Shayde is eventually revealed to be an instrument of the Matrix Lords – the disembodied collective consciousness of dead Time Lords – who was, themself, more of a construct than a fully organic being in their own right. However, that didn’t mean Shayde was any less of a companion, if anything, the opposite was true. In this debut story, Shayde met the Fifth Doctor after they assisted him in defeating the villainous Melanicus, and went on to assist in a number of other missions as well, even teaming up with the Eighth Doctor later in their career.
Shayde stands out as a Doctor Who companion for a number of reasons. First and foremost, they are a link to a virtually unexplored corner of Time Lord history through the Matrix Lords, which is in and of itself incredibly interesting to fans of the franchise. Shayde also brings a bit more to the table in terms of assisting the Doctor on missions. Usually, the Doctor invites people to tag along on their adventures because the Time Lord wants to witness the wonders of the universe through their eyes. Sure, they often get into trouble, but the goal of the companion isn’t to be a soldier, but rather just that: a companion. However, it can’t be ignored that wherever the Doctor goes, trouble follows, so having a companion like Shayde is simply more practical. Shayde can track individuals through time and space, can store an unlimited number of things inside their ‘body’ (which is actually more of a gateway to an interdimensional void), and has all the weaponized abilities of what’s known as a Cast, which were basically Time Sentinels designed for planetary defense.
From their significance to Time Lord history and culture through the Matrix Lords to their unparalleled usefulness (especially when compared to other companions), Shayde is easily the coolest companion fans of the Doctor Who TV series have never met – and it makes sense why the Tenth Doctor would remember them.

Usher will be the headlining performer at the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime show, Apple Music, the NFL and Roc Nation announced on Sunday. The game takes place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV. on Sunday, February 11, 2024, airing on CBS.
Usher follows Rihanna, who performed at the 2023 halftime show — while pregnant! — and the 2022 all-star tag team of Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent.
“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before,” said Usher. “Thank you to the fans and everyone who made this opportunity happen. I’ll see you real soon.”
“Usher is an icon whose music has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape throughout his career, we couldn’t be more excited to have him headline this year’s Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show,” said Seth Dudowsky, NFL Head of Music. “We look forward to working with Usher, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another Halftime Show for the history books.”
“Usher is the ultimate artist and showman. Ever since his debut at the age of 15, he’s been charting his own unique course. Beyond his flawless singing and exceptional choreography, Usher bares his soul,” said JAY-Z. “His remarkable journey has propelled him to one of the grandest stages in the world. I can’t wait to see the magic.”
“The Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show is one of the most highly anticipated music events of the year and we’re excited to bring this legendary show to fans all over the world in Spatial Audio, along with tons of exclusive videos, interviews, playlists and so much more across Apple Music,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Music, Apple TV+, Sports, and Beats. “We are so proud of what we were able to accomplish together with the NFL and Roc Nation last year and now with the insanely talented Usher set to take the stage we’re looking forward to another incredible Halftime Show from one of the world’s all-time greatest performers.”

Oh My God! Usher is the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show headliner!
“USHER. LAS VEGAS. APPLE MUSIC HALFTIME SHOW. #SBLVIII ——— @Usher, @kimkardashian,@nfl, @rocnation, @nfloncbs,” the news on Usher’s Instagram account read.
The announcement was made with the help of Kim Kardashian — who has attended the singer’s My Way Las Vegas residency multiple times. In the clip, shared over the intro to Usher’s 2004 hit, “Confessions,” Kim shares the news with the seemingly unsuspecting musician.
As Usher tells Kim he’s in the studio, she reveals while getting glam, “I finally got the answer to this rumor, it’s not about me, it’s about you.”
“You’re doing the Super Bowl,” the Kardashians star says into the phone.
“Stop playing with me man,” Usher says in the classic clip.
“You’re doing the Apple Music Halftime Show in Vegas,” she tells him.
Kim informs him that she doesn’t have time to “play” about the news and tells him that this has to be bigger than his current Las Vegas shows.
“I’ve seen you in Vegas twice, this one has to be different.”
As Kim runs down the list of people she plans on inviting to the show, the singer rushes her off the phone.
Las Vegas — where this year’s big game will be held — has been a familiar place for the GRAMMY-winning singer, as his has been at the MGM for his residency since July 2022.
“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before,” Usher said in a statement. “Thank you to the fans and everyone who made this opportunity happen. I’ll see you real soon.”
On the heels of Rihanna taking the show to new heights — while pregnant — in 2023, The “Yeah” singer will take the reins next year and join an elite group of performers to grace the coveted stage.
Among them have notably been Beyoncé, Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, and Lady Gaga, who all have entertained fans around the world from the highly anticipated annual game. For many stars selected for the show, it is a career milestone.
As Jennifer Lopez, who co-headlined the show with Shakira in 2020, said in her Netflix documentary, Halftime, “I’ve been thinking about the Super Bowl probably since I started recording records in 1999,”
The 2024 Super Bowl will take place inside Allegiant Stadium in Nevada on Feb. 11, 2024.

Ever since the success, demise, rebirth and extended afterlife of the NBC-turned-Yahoo sitcom “Community,” the showrunner Dan Harmon has largely avoided the strictures of network TV. With his cynical streak and meta references, Harmon’s niche sensibility was always an awkward fit for a mass audience; even when “Community” was on the air, it was perpetually on the verge of cancellation. As television expanded rapidly in the 2010s, Harmon found a more natural home in cable and streaming. Despite the departure of “Rick and Morty” co-creator and star Justin Roiland amid allegations of sexual assault, the hit show is now entering its seventh season on Adult Swim; earlier this year, Harmon helped adapt the web comic “Strange Planet” into a series for Apple TV+.
With the animated half-hour “Krapopolis,” however, Harmon makes his official return to a broadcast network. Airing on Fox, “Krapopolis” is at least guaranteed the stability “Community” never enjoyed; ahead of its premiere on Sept. 24, the show has already been renewed through Season 3. And due to the ongoing strikes, “Krapopolis” is now, by default, one of the tentpoles of its network’s fall schedule, with new live-action series postponed until further notice.
That’s a heavy load to bear for an amusing, high-concept riff on the family sitcom set in an extremely loose rendition of ancient Greece. Physically weak and intellectually arrogant, 29-year-old Tyrannis (Richard Ayoade) is a man ahead of his time, so he’s recruited his warrior sister Stupendous (Pam Brady) and scientist half-brother Hippocampus (Duncan Trussell) to help him build a modern city-state. (“He tells powerless people they’re powerful and they like that, so they give him all their power,” one citizen says of Tyrannis’ skill set.) But first, Tyrannis must persuade the skeptical, not least among them his own parents: vain goddess Deliria (Hannah Waddingham) and Shlub (Matt Berry), a manticore-like hybrid of several different creatures.
Over the three episodes screened for critics, many of the jokes on “Krapopolis” fall into a couple of patterns. Characters speak with the 20/20 hindsight of millennia in their future — when Tyrannis goes to sulk in a “reading nook,” his scene partner points out that “there’s no written language, so there are no books” — and “invent” modern notions like forensic science and the sports commentator. Meanwhile, staples of Greek mythology like Athena (Amber Stevens West), Hermes (Michael Urie) and the Trojan horse make cameo appearances. Anyone familiar with the legends won’t raise an eyebrow at ancient deities debasing themselves with vanity or petty feuds, but Harmon and his writers still clearly enjoy recasting messenger god Hermes as a shameless pot-stirrer, or Poseidon (David Koechner) as a jealous dad upset when Tyrannis dates his daughter.
The strongest weapon in the “Krapopolis” arsenal is its voice cast, who help keep these setups fresh even after they quickly grow familiar. Fans of “What We Do in the Shadows” will revel in yet another opportunity to hear Berry, once again in character as a chronically horny immortal, pronounce the word “sexual.” As Deliria, Waddingham loosens up her tightly wound “Ted Lasso” persona, fully embracing the role of a Jenna Maroney-esque delusional diva. “Prepare to disappoint the goddess Deliria!” she crows by way of an entrance. Tyrannis’ quest to modernize Krapopolis is best understood as a middle finger to his mother, who’s fond of turning enemies into snakes, than a principled stance.
A trio of episodes is not much on which to judge a show guaranteed as many seasons. “Krapopolis” will last a long while, at least by today’s standards, when cancellations come early and often. But there’s promise in both the flexibility of the “Krapopolis” setup, which allows for a Springfield-like bench of supporting players, and the core cast assembled to carry it. Among Fox’s longstanding animation lineup, Harmon already feels more at home than he ever did on NBC primetime.
The first two episodes of Krapopolis will air on Fox on Sept. 24, with remaining episodes airing weekly on Sundays at 8:30pm.

THIS is the terrifying moment a festivalgoer got her hair stuck in a Ferris wheel.
The ordeal occurred in the Indian town of Dwarka during the Shireshwar Carnival in Khambhalia, Gujarat, when a woman’s hair became trapped in the fairground ride.
The woman yelled in agony as her hair became entangled in the massive swinging structure which could have taken her life had staff not acted quickly enough.
The footage shows the victim was not able to move an inch as her entire hair was pulled by the shaft.
The funfair staff immediately hurried to stop the Ferris wheel.
When the joyride came to a stop, the brave men clambered onto the swing to disentangle her hair at a height of 25 feet.

Locals including Ferris staff were seen scrambling to remove her hair from the Ferris wheel in the scary clip.
The video then reveals stunned passers-by watching the horrific scenario happen in front of their eyes with some of them suggesting to the rescuers how to untangle the lady’s hair.
Some of the young onlookers laughed at the precarious situation.
According to accounts, the woman’s hair was finally ripped off altogether in a bid to set her free.
The video also shows a man cutting a woman’s hair with a knife as another holds her hair for support.
Meanwhile, residents at the carnival were irritated and expressed significant concerns about safety during similar events.
“The lady was writhing in pain. Who will be held accountable for this unfortunate incident?” Pramod Kumar, an eyewitness told The Sun Online.
“I hope we learn a lesson from these incidents and such incidents won’t take place in the near future,” another said.
Similarly, a 20-year-old girl from Bankura, West Bengal, died earlier this year after her hair became caught in the Ferris wheel’s rotator shaft.
According to accounts, the girl was crushed to the ground with her skin holding her head stuck in the swing.
Elsewhere, schoolgirl on a picnic enjoying the joyride narrowly avoided a possibly dangerous scenario on the Ferris wheel in Mansbal Park, in the Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir, India, in August.
The schoolgirl plunged through a narrow gap before grasping the iron bars tightly.
The girl was seen swinging in the air, anxiously clutching to an iron rod of the bucket before being dragged to safety.
It comes after a teenager was tragically killed on an Adrenaline slingshot ride in France earlier the same month.
The 17-year-old, known only as Sammy, died at the theme park in Cap D’Agde, Southern France, after suspected high winds rocked the ride.

Elsewhere, a woman lost her life and multiple kids were injured after a horror roller coaster crash in Sweden.
The 35-year-old died as nine people, including children, were rushed to the hospital following the accident at the Grona Lund amusement park in Stockholm.

Simone Biles, 26, spoke out against Gymnastics Ireland after a viral video showed a young Black gymnast being skipped over during a medal ceremony when her white peers were given an award after a recent competition. The Olympic champion took to the comments section of the video, which was originally taken in March but posted on Twitter on September 22, and revealed that she sent her own supportive video to the gymnast while also expressing her disappointment about the shocking moment.
“when this video was circulating, her parents reached out. It broke my heart to see, so I sent her a little video there is no room for racism in any sport or at all !!!!” Simone’s comment read.

Shortly after the video received a lot of backlash and the parents of the gymnast said she was snubbed due to racism, Gymnastics Ireland publicly apologized through a statement on their website. In the statement, they claimed the issue had been settled in August, but the young girl’s mother has denied this, and claimed the family hadn’t received a genuine apology, according to Irish Independent.
“We are aware of a video that has been posted on social media relating to an incident that took place over 18 months ago at a GymSTART event in March 2022 for which we received a complaint from the parents of one of our members,” the statement read. “Subsequently both parties agreed to enter mediation which was independently facilitated by Sports Disputes Solutions Ireland as per our policy/procedure which led to a resolution agreed by both parties in August 2023.”
The website also gave background information, which claimed that “the official” involved in the incident “expressed deep regret for what they described as an honest error and requested the opportunity to apologise in person to the competitor and her family,” but the “request was initially declined.” Gymnastics Ireland also claimed that a “written apology” was “provided by the identified individual” and “has since been issued to the competitor and her family.”
“Initially we attempted to address the matter through the informal process of our discipline and complaints policy,” they also wrote. “However, following a series of communications with the parents they informed Gymnastics Ireland that they would not be engaging in the process and were seeking legal advice.”
In addition to Simone and other online users’ complaints, U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles called the incident “beyond hurtful on so many levels.”

It’s happening, Star Wars fans – a third Star Wars Jedi game is in development.
Confirmation came not from development studio Respawn or publisher EA but Cal Kestis himself – or, more accurately, the man who gives Cal his face and voice.
Cameron Monaghan was talking at a recent panel at Ocala Comic Con and admitted during the interview that the team was “in the process” of making a “third” game (albeit acknowledging that much of this work seems to have chiefly been “conversations” for now rather than anything more concrete).
“We’re working on a third [game], and we’re in the process of doing that right now,” Monaghan said during his panel (thanks, VGC).
“That’s a big undertaking, and there have been some conversations so far, but hopefully, when all things are said and done, we’ll be able to go in and make something really cool.”
Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson recently hinted at new secret projects in development at Jedi Survivor developer, Respawn Entertainment.
During the recent Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference, Wilson spoke about EA’s success with acquiring Respawn and celebrated the studio’s recent work on the Star Wars Jedi series and Apex Legends.
“We haven’t done that many acquisitions, we’ve done a few,” Wilson said. “Respawn, of course, was maybe one of the most incredible acquisitions ever done in the industry”.
“They’re an incredible team, and they’ve created incredible value for us, for our shareholders, and certainly for these global communities of players across Apex and the Jedi series. And you should imagine that there’s some other things going on at Respawn that we’re very excited about, that we’re not going to talk about but that we’re very excited about just given the quality of that group.”
Could a third instalment of the Star Wars Jedi series be one of those “things going on” at Respawn? Watch this space… literally, in this case.

Sadie Sink and Millie Bobby Brown, the talented actresses who portrayed Max and Eleven in Stranger Things, seamlessly brought these iconic characters to life and also rose to unprecedented Hollywood stardom at the same time. As is the case with most of the kids that joined the Netflix original’s cast, their on-screen chemistry transcended the screen, making them not only beloved stars of the show but also close friends in real life.

Given how cutthroat the Hollywood industry is, there is often chatter about how Brown and Sink do not actually get along. And as soft-spoken as she might be, Sadie Sink shut this narrative down once and for all.

The Stranger Things cast has managed to gain an audience that boasts of several generations owing to its plot. However, it is undeniable that the jugular grip it has on the Gen-Z is unlike that of any other show. While this means everlasting marketing, it also means that every side eye and every hand movement is read into, leading to many theories about the dynamics between the cast. A very popular one among such theories revolves around Millie Bobby Brown and Sadie Sink being rivals. But Sink stepped on it with absolute fervor in an interview with Access in 2022.
Reflecting on their time on set together The Whale actress said that at the beginning she and Brown were the only girls. This, along with the fact that their careers have taken similar trajectories, has led the two actresses to develop an undeniable “connection” with each other. While the statement was made by the actress towards the end of 2022, it is unlikely that things have changed.
Their real life friendship has reflected in their chemistry on-screen, as well, but will another project see the two’s magic?

While the SAG AFTRA may have slowed things down, the Stranger Things fandom will at one point or the other have to swallow the tough pill that the Stranger Things cast is graduating. And while some are even hoping that the actors branch out to greater things soon, they will miss seeing the Hawkins gang together. Given how each actor from the Netflix original has different interests and a big price tag, this will be a difficult feat to achieve for anyone but Millie Bobby Brown and Sadie Sink.

The nineteen-year-old actress is already trying her hand at production with her PCMA Productions. She has already churned out the first Enola Holmes movie for Netflix, which garnered a million streams without breaking a sweat. Given how Brown is constantly pushing her business endeavors, one can expect her to further expand her production house. And a movie with Sadie Sink in the cast is just the way to do it. However, as of now, fans can only wait with their fingers crossed.

In my opinion, the two greatest directors to emerge from the nexus of international cinema in the 1990s were both Scandinavian. One of them, Lars von Trier, became quite famous, for reasons both good and bad. (Von Trier the court jester of controversy has always had detractors, but “Breaking the Waves” is one of the great films, and he’s made several more that are major.) The other director I’m speaking of never got famous, and his movies, even during his brief heyday, didn’t become art-house sensations. Yet for a time, Sweden’s Lukas Moodysson burned with an intoxicating flame.
He made three films of astonishing organic craft and humanistic purity: “Show Me Love” (1998), a shockingly lyrical love story about two high-school girls who fall for each other in a small town that didn’t look very tolerantly upon them; “Together” (2000), an ensemble comedy set in a sharehome commune in Stockholm in 1975 that is one of the only films that totally gets the counterculture; and “Lilya 4-ever” (2002), a haunting tragedy about a wayward girl in the former Soviet Union who’s ensnared by sex traffickers.
Moodyssoon had a sublime run, but he also had one of the most jarring fall-offs I’ve ever seen in the career of a major filmmaker. “A Hole in My Heart,” his 2004 oddity about three characters camped out in a disgusting flat trying (sort of) to make an amateur porn video, is one of the most unpleasant movies I ever sat through; it felt like it was made almost as an assault on the audience. (When Moodyssen introduced it at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival, he said, “I think it’s the best movie ever made,” sounding quite serious.) After that, he seemed to lose his touch, making the bizarre experimental film “Container”; “Mammoth,” a slipshod English-language feature, starring Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal, that was done in the mode of “Babel”; and “We Are the Best!,” which turned a graphic novel by Moodysson’s wife into a tale that was all florid punk self-righteousness. Moodysson, like Von Trier, always was something of a punk (the original title of “Show Me Love” was “Fucking Åmål,” a reference to the town the film is set in, as in “Fucking Newark”). Now, though, the humanistic hum was gone.
I thought about all this while watching “Together 99,” Moodysson’s first feature in a decade (it just premiered at TIFF), because it’s actually a sequel to one of his great ones — it continues the story of that house commune, only set 25 years after the first movie. Naturally, I went into it hoping that Moodysson would revisit not just the characters from “Together” but the earlier film’s special, wise, happy-yet-sad, acerbic-but-affectionate spirit. Watching “Together 99,” though, what you see is that Moodysson is now a different filmmaker; what he’s lost is that spirit. In essence, he’s become a misanthrope, and in “Together 99,” though he tries to show the romanticism of youth curdling into middle age, it’s the movie itself that seems curdled.
What was great about “Together” is that the movie was framed, in the abstract, as a salute to leftover ’70s hippie idealism, but the wry joke of it is that everything the characters were doing to extend the “revolution” — their rigid left-wing politics, their lack of a television set, their open relationships that never seemed to work — became a de facto expression of why the lifestyle they’d chosen was doomed to fail. The commune was all about sharing, about selflessness, and these characters couldn’t have been more selfish. (They were selfish about their selflessness.) Yet Moodysson sort of loved them for their illusions, and that’s what he wanted the audience to do too. He wasn’t skewering the hypocrisy (well, a little bit he was). He was reveling in the grand folly of people at once grasping for and losing touch with everything they really need.
I’ve heard the setup that opens “Together 99” described, half a dozen times, as “there are only two people left in the commune,” but that isn’t quite right. Göran (Gustaf Hammarsten), a sad-sack activist-journalist (he writes an occasional article), and Klasse (Shanti Roney), a sad-sack textile maker, are indeed the only two people from the Together commune living in a house (it’s a different, more suburban home from the one in the first film). But two men sharing a house and bickering over whether they should use hot water to wash the dishes isn’t a “commune.” It’s two aging roommates living under a delusion that borders on mental illness.
The two discuss the possibility of recruiting new “members,” and it’s in that spirit — of trying to do something to reconnect with the human race — that Klasse lines up a surprise party for Göran’s 60th birthday. He arranges for everyone from the old Together commune to show up for a visit, and the entire movie takes place that day and night.
The other characters have all moved on with their lives, so the get-together feels sort of like a college reunion. Except that nobody says much about what they’re up to now. Certain key points are mentioned — Signe (Cecilia Frode) and Sigvard (Lars Frode) now work in television, which kind of gives the lie to the old let’s-boycott-TV-because-it’s-bad-for-you ethos of the bohemian ’70. But the conceit of “Together 99” is that for 24 hours, everyone puts their lives aside and sort of flirts with becoming the commune again. This doesn’t quite parse dramatically, because it’s not believable. It’s reboot logic applied to an art film.
I could namecheck the assorted characters and situations and risk putting the readers of this review to sleep: Klasse, still carrying a torch for Lasse (Jonas Karlsson), who has gone on to become a noted theater director; Lena (Anja Lundqvist), kicked out of the commune near the end of “Together,” now showing up as a vibrant head case who has brought along a silent young woman (Clara Christiansson Drake) she claims is her daughter; Peter (David Dencik), who must be a party crasher because no one remembers him; or Erik (Olle Sarri), who in one of the film’s few vivid scenes excoriates his ex-commune mates for the naïveté of the politics they all shared — and he does it so forcefully that it’s hard not to watch the scene without feeling like he’s speaking for the filmmaker.
What’s strange about “Together 99” is that it looks like a Lukas Moodysson film (natural light), it moves like a Lukas Moodysson film (the documentary-like flow), but it’s blanketed with a sodden forlorn Swedish bourgeois cynicism that makes you think Moodysson needs to get out more. In the ’70s, there was an ongoing debate about the Robert Altman of movies like “Nashville”: Did he love his characters, or was he looking down his nose at them? As an Altman believer, I never saw the condescension that some did, but I now see it in Lukas Moodysson. It’s not that he dislikes his characters; it’s that he no longer loves them enough to endow them with an inner glow. He has made a movie in the form of an endless cocktail party where no one, for a moment, looks truly happy or free, so the audience can’t even get a contact high.
In my opinion, the two greatest directors
David Fincher is one of the most exciting directors working today, with a style that feels like a devious mix of Stanley Kubrick and Brian De Palma: cold and exacting, but gloriously pulpy. Over the course of his prolific 40-year career, Fincher has directed dozens of music videos for some of the biggest stars in the world; helmed 11 critically and commercially-acclaimed films (save for Alien 3, of course); and had a hand in developing three outstanding television shows. He has made a name for himself as a meticulous and demanding director, but one that delivers the goods. His next film, The Killer, looks to be another winning entry in an already stunning filmography.
Of course, given the nature of the industry, these produced credits only represent a fraction of the projects that Fincher had a hand in; there are many others which he came close to directing, but for one reason or another never came to fruition. Looking at all these canned ideas or perpetually stalled projects, it’s easy to see why Fincher was attracted to them in the first place, and it’s unfortunate to know we’ll never see any of them come to life under his direction.
From epic space voyages to deep-sea adventures and everything in between, here are 15 of the most interesting unmade David Fincher movies we’ll never get to see.
In late 2000, it was announced that David Fincher was going to direct Seared, a loose adaptation of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain’s darkly humorous memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. Following their successful collaborations on Fight Club and Seven, Brad Pitt was interested in starring as the lead, with Benicio del Toro also in talks for an undisclosed role. Jesse Wigutow was brought on to write the adaptation, but not long after the project was announced, the film was scrapped in favor of adapting it into a television show. At that point, Fincher left the production.
Fox moved forward with a television series, named after Bourdain’s memoir and led by Bradley Cooper. To say Kitchen Confidential performed badly would be an understatement: after the first four episodes failed to draw in many viewers, Fox not only canceled the show, but didn’t even bother to air the remainder of the season. However, this isn’t indicative of the show’s quality, as it was competing for views with the MLB playoffs – it was practically destined to fail. The show has since developed a dedicated fanbase following its release on DVD.
In 2008, it was announced that David Fincher and Paramount were teaming up to produce and co-direct a remake of the 1981 cult movie Heavy Metal, an animated anthology film adapted from the sci-fi / fantasy comics magazine of the same name. Fincher’s remake was rumored to feature eight or nine segments, with each story directed by a different filmmaker. Zack Snyder, Gore Verbinski, Patrick Osborne, Guillermo del Toro, Tim Miller, and Kevin Eastman (one-time editor and publisher of the magazine) all expressed interest in joining the project as guest directors.
Production hit a snag when executives at Paramount got cold feet and dropped the project, claiming the film was “too risqué for mainstream audiences.” Fincher, Miller, and Eastman began shopping the project to other studios, but to no avail. The project was officially killed when Robert Rodriguez purchased the rights to the magazine, hoping to make his own adaptation. But that was arguably for the better, as it allowed Fincher and Tim Miller to team up and make their own version of Heavy Metal with Love, Death & Robots, their incredible Netflix anthology series that was undoubtedly inspired by the influential magazine.
When David Fincher signed on to direct The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2009, he did so with the understanding that, if the first film was successful, he would return to direct both sequels: The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. What’s more, Fincher was planning to shoot both films at the same time, since the second and third books serve as one story.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo debuted during the joyous 2011 Christmas season; although fans of the series came out in droves, its oppressively bleak tone and nearly three-hour running time proved too much for general audiences. Despite critical acclaim, the film was considered a mild box office disappointment, bringing in a modest global sum of $230 million against the film’s $90 million price tag (not accounting for marketing).
Although Dragon Tattoo wasn’t a smashing success, there still remained the possibility of a sequel: Sonyhad commissioned Zaillian to write the sequel – which Fincher warned was different from the book but nevertheless full of potential – and spent millions on the screen rights to the entire Millennium trilogy. In Fincher’s own words, the only way for the studio to recoup their earnings was to make the sequels.
Unfortunately, the sequels never came to fruition: the lower-than-expected earnings for the first film, coupled with Fincher’s undoubtedly expensive vision for the two follow-ups, probably seemed like too much of a risk for Sony. Instead, the studio decided to reboot the series with Fede Álvarez’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web, more modestly priced at $45 million. Rooney Mara was replaced with Claire Foy as Lisbeth Salander, as was the rest of the cast, as Álvarez wanted Spider’s Web to be entirely his own vision.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web was a box-office bomb, grossing $35 million worldwide – less than a sixth of Fincher’s film. The reboot’s failure unfortunately led to all possible sequels – from Fincher, Álvarez, or otherwise – to be shelved indefinitely.
After the success of Gone Girl, it was announced that David Fincher and Ben Affleck would re-team for a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Strangers on a Train. Gillian Flynn, who scripted Gone Girl and its novel, was hired to tackle the screenplay.
Shortened to Strangers(you’ll understand why in a minute), Fincher’s modernized update of Hitchcock’s film would have starred Ben Affleck as an unhappily-married movie star in the midst of an intense Oscars campaign. When his private jet breaks down, he’s lucky enough to get a lift to Los Angeles on another plane, this one owned by a wealthy socialite, also in a loveless marriage. Upon learning of his marriage woes, the stranger proposes the idea of killing each other’s wives.
The premise is undoubtedly juicy, and would be a perfect fit for Fincher’s meticulous brand of pulp cinema. Unfortunately the project fell apart soon after it’s announcement: at the time, Fincher and Flynn were working on their (never to be seen) remake of the popular British series Utopia for HBO, and Affleck was preparing for his (never to be seen) solo Batman movie, which he was also planning to direct. As of now, there are currently no plans to resume development on the remake.
Despite well-documented production troubles, including costly reshoots to completely rehaul the third act, Brad Pitt’s zombie actioner World War Z turned out better than expected (even if it only bared the faintest resemblance to its source material). The film would go on to make nearly $550 million worldwide, all but ensuring a sequel, maybe even two (director Marc Foster and Paramount originally envisioned a trilogy).
Paramount hired J.A. Boyana (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) to directWorld War Z 2, and writer Steven Knight (Locke, Peaky Blinders) to pen the script. But production continued to stall at Paramount under the tutelage of former-CEO and head of production Brad Grey, who was uncertain about moving forward with the expensive franchise. Grey ultimately decided to can it, and removed the film from the studio’s release calendar.
However, that changed when Jim Gianopulos stepped in to replace Grey as Paramount’s new chairman. Talks on the sequel resumed, with Brad Pitt campaigning for Fincher to take over directing duties. Considering Gianopulos’s relationship with Fincher (he greenlit Fight Club and Gone Girl during his tenure at 20th Century Fox), he was on board with the idea.
More shocking than the sequel’s announcement was the news that Fincher was actually interested in directing a studio tentpole, considering the brutal experience of directing Alien 3 and his subsequent refusal to take on any Hollywood tentpole properties or IP. After agreeing on a budget somewhere north of $200 million, Fincher officially boarded the project, with filming set to begin in the early part of 2018.
Despite a greenlight, scheduling conflicts kept pushing the shoot back, with production now aiming for a 2019 start. Then in February of that year, Paramount announced the sequel was officially dead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, China’s ban on films containing ghosts or zombies was the biggest reason for the film’s cancelation; without the Chinese market, Paramount simply couldn’t justify the massive price tag.
In 2000, it was announced that David Fincher was gearing up to direct the World War II action film They Fought Alone, based on the life of Col. Wendell Fertig, an American soldier in the Philippines who became a pivotal figure in the Pacific Theater when he and a ragtag group of soldiers amassed a massive Filipino guerrilla army to fight against the Japanese invaders.
Although no stars were ever attached to the project, Tom Cruise was rumored to be circling the project. Unfortunately nothing ever came of the film, but Fincher still expressed interest in directing the project in 2009, nine years after the project’s initial announcement. But since then, there have been no developments, all but confirming it is dead in the water.
In 2008, David Fincher partnered with Tim Miller (Deadpool) and his VFX animation company Blur Studios to option the rights to A. Lee Martinez’s sci-fi noir novel The Automatic Detective. Set in the mutant-infested “technotopia” of Empire City, Martinez’s novel follows a robot by the name of Mack Megatron, a one-time killing machine that has rewired his murderous programming in order to live a reserved life as a cabbie. But when his kind-hearted neighbors go missing under mysterious circumstances, Megatron puts his peaceful life on the line to investigate their disappearance.
Since the project never made it past the option stage, it’s unclear whether Fincher would direct the film or just produce it. (If not him, then definitely Miller.) No news or developments regarding the project have been made since.
In the late ‘90s, David Fincher signed on to direct one of the most controversial (and expensive) spec sales of the era: The Sky Is Falling, written by Eric Warren Singer and Howard Roth.
Playing out like a cross between Preacher and Natural Born Killers, the absolutely bonkers script is about two priests on an archeological dig who discover unequivocal proof that God is actually dead. Propelled by a new sense of nihilism and loss of faith, the duo embark on a drug-induced, murderous crime spree as they spread the news of their discovery. It’s up to a terminally ill hitman hired by the Vatican to stop the unhinged priests.
Despite unanimous praise, studios wouldn’t touch the script with a ten-foot-pole, worried about the potential blowback from such a controversial movie. Fincher realized this and dropped the project. For a brief moment, director Gore Verbinski signed on to direct (which, funny enough, would have been his follow-up to the family-friendly Mouse Trap), but that didn’t work out, either.
David Fincher’s remake of Disney’s 1954 sci-fi adventure classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is one of the more fascinating “what-ifs” of Fincher’s storied career. The filmmaker originally boarded the project in 2010, and writer Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) was hired to pen the script. The film was gearing up to be Fincher’s first foray into the realm of 3D filmmaking, and estimated that approximately 70% of the final film would’ve been CGI. In other words, this wasn’t going to be a cheap film.
Disney tentatively gave the film a greenlight and Fincher began the casting process. He first reached out to frequent collaborator Brad Pitt to play Ned Land (portrayed by Kirk Douglas in the original), but the actor declined. Matt Damon and Daniel Craig were approached next, but both men couldn’t commit to the arduous 140-day shoot in Australia.
Fincher’s final choice was Channing Tatum, who at that point was best known for his roles in the Step-Up films and G.I. Joe. Disney didn’t think he was a big enough name to lead what would’ve surely been a $200 million movie, and so counter-offered with Chris Hemsworth. At that point, Fincher decided to cut his losses and move onto his next project: Gone Girl.
In 2006, it was announced that David Fincher signed on to direct Torso, an adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko’s acclaimed graphic novel.
Torso tells the true but relatively unknown story of Treasury Department agent Eliot Ness’ time after his Al Capone days. Upon moving to Cleveland to serve as the city’s public safety officer in 1934, human torsos and limbs begin popping up all over town, followed by taunting letters from the killer to try and catch him. Ness – who had no genuine experience in investigative police work – put together a team of ex-officers to apprehend the serial murderer, who would later become known as the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. To this day the killings remain unsolved.
The pulpy material is obviously right up Fincher’s alley, bearing the most obvious resemblance to Seven and, to an extent, Mindhunter. He was clearly excited about the project, comparing his vision to Citizen Kane and Rashomon in the way it deconstructs the mythology surrounding Elliot Ness and looks at the investigation from every possible angle: was the Mad Butcher really as cunning and elusive as history implies, or did Ness’s overblown ego and lack of experience result in the preventable deaths of innocent people?
Paramount eyed an early 2009 start date for production, with Matt Damon rumored to play Ness, and Casey Affleck, Rachel McAdams, and Gary Oldman rounding out the cast. However, everything came to a screeching halt in 2009 when Paramount let the rights to the novel lapse. (Some have speculated that this was due to the contentious working relationship between Fincher and the studio during the production of Benjamin Button, despite the film’s 13 Oscar noms and three wins.) Whatever the reason, Fincher’s plans for the film were canned.
The project was briefly resurrected in 2013 when it was announced that David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, The Green Knight) had signed on to write and direct his own adaptation of the novel. But since then – nothing.
In 2001, Fincher acquired the rights to Katie Arnoldi’s novel Chemical Pink with the intent to direct. Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk was to adapt the novel, which sounds like the perfect pairing considering the book’s plot.
Set in the world of competitive female bodybuilding and inspired by Arnoldi’s own experiences, the story centers around Aurora Jeanine Johnson, a single mom who moves from Georgia to the West Coast to pursue her bodybuilding dreams. There she falls under the tutelage of Charles, an eccentric millionaire who promises to train Aurora and finance her dreams in exchange for increasingly bizarre sexual favors. Both only have one goal in mind: to mold the perfect female form, no matter the cost.
For reasons unknown, Fincher exited the project in 2002 and was replaced by prolific music video director Jonas Åkerlund (Lords of Chaos). Nothing has come of the project since.
In early 2000, David Fincher was attached to direct an adaptation of Robert Silverberg’s 1969 Hugo Award-winning short story Passengers (not to be confused with the Chris Pratt and J-Law sci-fi romance of the same name).
Described as Invasion of the Body Snatchers re-imagined as a twisted love story, Passengers takes place in a world where imperceptible aliens hijack human bodies for two or three days of violent and sexual debauchery, after which they move onto the next person, leaving the victims confused and unaware of their actions. Rather than battle the aliens, humans endure them, and the story centers around one man who has been “ridden” through an intense physical encounter with a woman, also under alien influence. While the victims usually never want to meet the other people involved, the man jeopardizes his career to find her, even though she gets “ridden” regularly and has no recollection of him.
Michael London, who was spearheading the project as producer, shared more details about the story (via Variety):
“The alien creatures are purely psychological, have no physical forms until they nest in the cerebral cortex and take their host on these rides […] For two or three days, the person doesn’t show up to work and engages in wild debauchery, acting out the sexual, violent urges they normally suppress […] It’s an amusement park experience for these aliens, who can’t otherwise experience emotions like sex, anger, fear. The humans endure it, but society is crumbling from the unpredictability and lack of control.”
Fincher was attached for a couple of years, but in 2002 it was revealed that he was no longer interested in directing, just producing. He and London searched for a director, but interest in the project apparently fizzled out, as there haven’t been any developments since.
In 2001, David Fincher expressed interest in directing an adaptation of Frank Miller’s three-issue comic miniseries Hard Boiled (not to be confused with John Woo’s action classic). The sci-fi actioner would’ve starred Nicolas Cage as Carl Seltz, an insurance investigator in a dystopian future society who unexpectedly discovers that he’s actually a cyborg named Nixon, a psychotic assassin/tax collector who’s also heralded as the future savior of the robot race.
Fincher eventually backed out of the project, but a new development in 2008 asserted that Frank Miller himself was taking over directing duties, after discovering his love for the medium while working on Sin City and The Spirit. These plans, of course, were never realized.
Warner Bros again revived the IP in 2016 when Ben Wheatley expressed interest in writing and directing, with Tom Hiddleston set to star. Like Fincher, Wheatley and Hiddleston left the project, and it’s been stuck in development hell ever since.
Arthur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, followed up his groundbreaking epic with Rendezvous with Rama, another operatic sci-fi novel that follows a group of human astronomers in the 2130s who are tasked with investigating the giant 31-by-12 mile cylindrical alien starship that has entered the solar system. Although not as critically well-received as 2001, Rendezvous still managed to nab both the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel upon its release.
Interest in a film adaptation was immediate, with Morgan Freeman actively pursuing the project as a potential starring vehicle. David Fincher became attached as director in 2001, and remained attached for years while it struggled to get off the ground. But in 2008, he revealed that the project was officially scrapped, and he was no longer attached. Via First Showing:
“It looks like it’s not going to happen. There’s no script and as you know, [Morgan Freeman’s] not in the best of health right now. We’ve been trying to do it but it’s probably not going to happen.”
But fans of the novel were elated when news broke that Denis Villeneuve was hired to direct an adaptation of the novel after he finishes with Dune: Part II. Given his work on films like Arrival and (obviously) Dune, Villeneuve feels like the perfect choice to tackle the material (although if there is one person who could replicate the cold, clinical, and meticulous direction of Kubrick’s 2001, it would be Fincher).
The Goon is considered by many to be “the one that got away” for Fincher. Based on Eric Powell’s comic of the same name, the series is based on the adventures of the Goon, a hard-edged brawler who works as an enforcer for the brutal mobster Labrazio. Despite being rooted in noir fiction, the Goon’s adventures frequently take a turn into the paranormal, with stories concerning ghosts, ghouls, aliens, mad scientists, and other monstrous creatures being the norm.
Teaming up again with Tim Miller and his Blur Studios, Fincher envisioned the film as 100% CGI, making it his first fully-animated feature. But funding was hard to come by, and in 2012 the two filmmakers turned to Kickstarter to raise $400,000 to finance a story reel to show investors, with Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown lending their voices. The Kickstarter goal was reached and the story reel produced (and eventually leaked online); despite the promising footage and fan fervor, studios still wouldn’t cough up the necessary money.
Interest in the project waned as development stalled, and David Fincher moved on. But ten years later, The Goon was revived at Netflix, with Tim Miller back on board to produce, with Patrick Osbourne directing. As of now, The Goon is still scheduled for release sometime in 2024 or 2025.

A woman in Massachusetts, United States, has made waves on social media after reportedly selling three 1st Edition vintage Pokemon card booster boxes worth up to $15,000 each for just $30 a piece at a yard sale. After realizing the heartbreaking mistake, she posted to Facebook in the hopes the buyer would see her plea and return the cards that her father owned.
In a screenshot posted to Twitter (X) by user @ericwhiteback, the woman, who appears to be posting to a local Facebook group, wrote, “SOS! On August 26 in Oakam [Massachusetts] there was a yard sale, where I accidentally sold my father’s Pokemon collectors items not knowing what they were…If you are one of the two gentlemen that bought these items PLEASE consider returning them. I am begging. My father is a wreck and I am beside myself.”
The items in question? According to the seller, “it was three factory sealed team rocket pokemon trading pack boxes. They are worth over 20000$. I sold them for 30$ [each].” If you look in the bottom right corner of the photo she posted, you’ll see the 1st Edition stamp, which makes them a whole lot rarer than the standard Team Rocket Unlimited run. Both were released in English in 2000.
A quick search on eBay’s recently sold tab reveals that 1st Edition Team Rocket sealed booster boxes have sold for around $13,500 a pop—not quite “over 20000$,” but still a lot to lose out on.

As for whether the woman got the Team Rocket Booster Boxes back, they were unfortunately “re-sold to a local card shop just days after the yard sale,” according to another Twitter (X) user, @bowman1951.
Posting his own alleged experience after seeing the woman’s plea on Facebook, Bowman wrote, “My wife sees this post in a yard-sale group on FB earlier today and asks me to look into it with my contacts. 30 min later, I discover they had walked into a Pokémon shop who bought them two days after the yard sale occurred.”
That’s not all. Allegedly, the owner of the local card shop the boxes were reportedly sold to is refusing to sell them back to the woman. “Apparently, he still has one of them so I shared this with the original owner. She contacted the shop and said she would buy it back,” he continued. “He’s refusing to sell. First he lied about it being gone but someone told me privately he was trying to pack it out just two days ago.”
Whether that’s true or not is unclear, but one thing is for certain: always make sure you know what you’re selling before you strike a deal you may come to regret.

Noah Pritzker’s bittersweet father and sons tale Ex-Husbands (aka Men Of Divorce) world premieres in Competition at the San Sebastian Film Festival on Sunday as one of the few U.S. productions to be accompanied by its cast this year thanks to its SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.
Griffin Dunne co-stars as a New York dentist who is reeling from his wife’s demand for a divorce after 35 years of marriage, opposite James Norton and Miles Heizer as his sons.
In search of some respite, he unwittingly travels to the Mexican resort of Tulum the same weekend as his oldest son’s bachelor party, where it emerges that he is not the only one suffering a life crisis.
The mainly Spanish press gave the warm-hearted picture – exploring family bonds and questions about love, life and death – an enthusiastic reception at a packed 8.30 am screening on Sunday morning ahead of a gala screening this evening.
Produced by Academy Award winner Bruce Cohen (American Beauty) under his Play Book Productions banner, Alexandra Byer at Rathaus Films and Nicolás Celis at Mexico City-based Pimienta Films (Birds of Passage), Ex-Husbands is among just under 500 independent feature productions to have qualified for a SAG-AFTRA Agreement since the beginning of the Actors’ Strike on July 14.
Pritzker said the interim agreement was a game-changer for an independent production like Ex-Husbands.
“It’s a small independent movie looking for distribution so to come without cast would have presented a whole other set of challenges,” he said.
Dunne, who takes an executive producer credit on the film, said he consulted with SAG before agreeing to join the festival tour.
“They recognise that this film did not have a distributor, was independently financed and wasn’t particularly relevant to the major issues that they were negotiating for. So, when I had their blessing, I’m thrilled to be here,” he said.
Norton suggested that while there had been initial confusion about whether actors should travel with films that had secured interim agreements, he was clear in his mind that it was the right thing to do.
“SAG has very openly said now that we should be encouraging independently financed movies more than ever. This is what we want. We want to be able to nourish that particular part of the industry,” he said.
Quizzed by a Spanish journalist on their hopes for an end to the strikes, Dunne said he had learned how to deal with periods of inactivity over the course of his career but that he was concerned for other members of the acting profession.
“I’ve been out of work for periods of time before so I’m familiar with that neurosis, but it’s been really tough for younger actors and actors who, you know, are more journeyman, who live from on one parts from one series to the next. A lot of actors are really hurting. So hopefully, it will get resolved soon.”
UK actor Norton said he had not been impacted as much as his U.S. counterparts due to the fact he is currently working in the theatre and that a handful of UK Equity Productions are still shooting.
“I’m very fortunate to be able to continue to work and I feel an immense gratitude obviously to those people who are making huge sacrifices on the other side of the pond for all of our sakes,” he said.
“It’s also worth mentioning, as Griffin said. that many actors are suffering. Many, many crew members are also suffering. So many people are affected by this, every single department, caterers, grips… it’s a huge, huge problem. And for them, not much is going to change so they’re making the ultimate sacrifice.”
Ex-Husbands is Pritzker’s second feature after 2015 drama Quitters.
He recounted how he had started working on the screenplay prior to the pandemic, taking inspiration from his own parents’ divorce as well as his father’s request to attend his bachelor party (which he turned down).
Griffin said he had fallen in love with his character.
“I’ve been acting for quite a long time. One year, you’re playing a lawyer, and then decades later you’re a Supreme Court judge, your somebody’s parent and then you’re somebody’s grandparent,” he said.
“To have a script with such a complex, interesting, funny character at my age, that is a central figure was so rare and a delight.”
Other cast members include Rosanna Arquette and Richard Benjamin.
“It’s my 11th or 12th shoot (with Rosanne Arquette),” said Dunne. “In 1980, we met in Poland for the shoot of a television movie called The Wall. Then I produced a movie called Baby It’s You (1983). Then we did After Hours… it’s been going on for quite while,” said Dunne.
“It just made perfect sense for Rosanna to be in this film. It was Noah’s call, but I was delighted. We just sort of picked up where we left off. We’re very close friends.”
Dunne revealed he was also huge fan of Benjamin’s work as an actor and director, particularly in the 1970s and 80s, and had even auditioned for his 1982 Oscar-nominated film My Favorite Year.
“I so wanted that movie. And here I was, now acting with hilm. I was just drilling him with questions about directing movies in the 70s and working with his wife (Paula Prentiss). I just took advantage of every moment I had with him.”
Noah Pritzker’s bittersweet father and sons tale
The 2023 installment of the annual Global Citizen Festival featured a powerful (if rainy) day of music, with sets by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lauryn Hill — who reunited the Fugees during her set — Anitta, Jung Kook — who was joined by Latto — Stray Kids side project 3Racha and a 50th anniversary of hip-hop performance with Busta Rhymes, Common, Big Daddy Kane and Rapsody alongside D-Nice.
But far more important was what it accomplished in raising awareness, and commitments for some $240 million from France and Norway to the International Fund for Agricultural Development to address the global hunger crisis, announced by Emmanuel Macron, President of France.
The flagship event from Global Citizen generated 3.3 million actions taken by global citizens around the world, calling on governments to address the major systemic issues our world is facing, including the global hunger crisis, the climate crisis, and equity for women and girls. Further accomplishments, per the Global Citizen announcement, are below.
Launching her tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her culture-shifting “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” album, Hill played classics including “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “Everything Is Everything,” and was joined by the Fugees for “Killing Me Softly”, “Ready or Not” and “Fu-Gee-La.”
“At a time when some leaders are walking back their promises, your actions deliver impact. So don’t stop taking action. Climate change can’t hit pause while world leaders get their act together. So don’t stop. The poorest people on Earth don’t have decades to spare. So don’t stop. We can’t wait for someone else to take action. We have to take action NOW.” – Hugh Evans, Co-Founder and CEO, Global Citizen
FOR FOOD AND FOR JOBS
The 2023 Global Citizen Festival saw major progress made to address the world’s worsening food insecurity crisis. Responding to global citizens’ calls for urgent action, Emmanuel Macron, President of France announced via video message a $150 million commitment to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) – currently the most committed by any government in its 13th replenishment. Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, Norway’s Minister of International Development also pledged $90 million to the fund.
In a moment of collective action from Central Park’s Great Lawn, global citizens signed the Face Up To Hunger petition, which is part of the Hungry For Action campaign, by submitting selfies, demanding world leaders act with urgency to address the global food crisis and prevent famine for the 49 million people facing emergency levels of hunger.
Much more needs to be done to provide crucial support to millions of smallholder farmers around the world, who produce 70 percent of food in low and middle-income countries. Global Citizen continues to call on world leaders to follow the example of France and Norway and increase their contributions to IFAD by at least 50 percent to ensure the agency reaches its funding target of $2 billion by the end of 2023, and will continue to urge Australia to rejoin IFAD as a member state.
FOR EQUITY
Continuing a year of dedicated action to address the inequity of women and girls, the 2023 Global Citizen Festival saw the Government of Belgium commit €2 million to support the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Supplies Program, which provides lifesaving and life-changing sexual and reproductive health services. Phoebe Gates also took the stage on behalf of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to introduce a $100 million contribution to UNFPA, made earlier in the week.
The Government of France announced a €40 million commitment to Education Cannot Wait (ECW), which stands ready to educate 20 million children living through emergencies and crises, such as displacement and conflict. The Government of Malta also made a commitment to support children facing conflict via video message at the festival. Global Citizen continues to call on governments to meet the remaining $620 million needed for ECW to continue its urgent work.
Additionally, announced a $4.5 million commitment in support of the Aspen Institute’s Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN) in Brazil, Columbia, India, Mexico and South Africa. GOYN improves access for young people to productive and dignified employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, and to skills and resources to help them thrive in the future of work.
Continuing the momentum generated during the Global Citizen NOW summit in April, major brands including The Body Shop, LUSH, Patagonia, Seventh Generation and Ben and Jerry’s signed a pledge against Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs), committing to protect the human right to freedom of expression without fear of intimidation or retaliation. The governments of Lithuania and Kosovo, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also encouraged global citizens everywhere to stand up for equality, freedom and justice during the festival.
FOR THE PLANET
As part of the Global Citizen Festival campaign, the organization invited both the UK government and His Majesty’s opposition to participate and detail their climate action commitments. In total, over 161,523 climate-related actions have been taken by global citizens in the UK to remind the British government of their promises and responsibilities, including the urgent need to publish their plan for the £11.6 billion climate finance pledge made in 2019. The Sunak Government declined to participate in today’s day of action.
The Taoiseach of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, announced his government will provide €149 million in climate financing this year, and committed to uphold its promise to contribute €225 million annually from 2025 onwards.
The Brazilian state of Pará returned to the Global Citizen Festival stage to pledge to further expand its protected areas of the Amazon rainforest by 1 million hectares by 2025, furthering the ambition of their commitments made in 2021. The primary focus will be on safeguarding indigenous lands and eliminating illegal deforestation as well as restoring 5 million hectares of forest by 2030. Global Citizen urges all Amazonian governments to join with President Lula in committing to end illegal deforestation by 2030.
Earlier this year, Global Citizen and its partners issued a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as part of its ongoing Power Our Planet campaign, calling for an additional reallocation of Canada’s Special Drawing Rights (SDR), which can be used to provide affordable financing to low-income countries. During the Global Citizen Festival a representative from the Canadian Government highlighted its announcement earlier in the week of an additional CAD$700 million in Special Drawing Rights (SDR) to the International Monetary Fund’s Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust.
Over 34,000 Global Citizens also called on Congress to oppose proposed cuts to foreign aid by nearly 30 percent in the U.S. FY2024 budget. Today, seven members of the U.S. Congress, including Sen. Chris Coons, Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Rep. Adriano Espaillat, Rep. Ann Wagner, and Rep. Grace Meng declared their commitment to supporting robust funding for foreign assistance in FY24.
Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, took to the Global Citizen Festival stage to make an historic announcement, becoming the first non-Pacific nation to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, which outlines a global plan to phase out fossil fuels, accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, and ensure an equitable transition to clean energy for all communities. José Ramos-Horta, President of Timor Leste, also affirmed his country’s commitment to the treaty during the event.
Global Citizen’s Young Artists Collective, a program showcasing original works from art students to raise awareness, create dialogue, and drive action-taking, activated at the Global Citizen Festival with an outdoor photo gallery displaying artwork from 12 selected students inspired by the creative prompt “Equity and its effects in today’s world”. In the time period of corsets, needlework, and curtsies, it was important, however misguided, for some ladies to remember a specific quote: “Well-behaved women seldom make history.” Many of the women in Game of Thrones are expected to do as they are told. Lord Tywin reminds his daughter, Cersei, of this, and even Catelyn Stark tries to instill this mindset on her younger and more rebellious daughter, Arya. However, had all the women in the series known that they could be remembered for amazing and adventurous feats instead of how perfect their stitched lines looked, then perhaps more of them would have gone out of their way to do what they wanted rather than what they were told.
Several women in the series are content with being told what to do, so they simply keep to themselves. There are some who believe they are a man’s equal in every way possible, including in combat and leadership. Then, there are the sly and patient women who know that they are better than their male counterparts, but they refuse to let anyone know their strategies until they have fulfilled their mission. These women are dangerous and brilliant, and they are empowering by going against the societal norm.
Check out the 10 most badass women in the Game of Thrones series who stopped at nothing to get what they wanted.
Looks are very deceiving with the Queen-to-be’s grandmother, Lady Olenna. On the outside, she seems like a kind and gentle older woman, but the moment she opens her mouth, she is quick as a whip with her opinions. When she asks Sansa to speak freely about Joffrey’s true character, she is not shocked to find out that he is a monster. She wants the best for her granddaughter, Margaery, and since Joffrey is clearly not a suitable husband, Lady Olenna decides to take matters into her own hands.
Not only does she shamelessly kill the bratty king, but she confidently tells his biological father, Jamie Lannister, that it was she who had done it moments before her own death. Lady Olenna may not have had much time on the screen, but she is a true badass for her clever tactics.
Since the very first Game of Thrones episode, Arya Stark has marched to the beat of her own drum. Instead of being a “proper lady” and doing as she was told, she would often leave her lessons and find a way to get her hands on a weapon to practice with it. Arya’s mother disapproved of her desire to learn how to fight, but her father realized it was a losing battle to try to keep her away from the action.
After the beheading of Ned Stark, Arya made it her mission to learn how to take down her enemies. She was cocky in the beginning, but after traveling with some of the best fighters, she quickly learned that having patience and a meticulous plan was her best strategy. In the end, Arya became one of the most skilled assassins who refused to let anyone tell her what to do.
After years of being mocked and ridiculed for her size, Brienne of Tarth grew some thick skin and made it a point to grow up to become one of the best soldiers in Westeros. She served under Renly Baratheon for a brief moment, but after his death, she swears her loyalty to Catelyn Stark.
Brienne does not let others’ comments get to her when they joke about how a woman could never become a knight or if she is a woman at all. After Catelyn’s death, Brienne keeps her oath to find and bring both of Catelyn’s daughters to safety. Between her fierce loyalty and ability to look any man in the eye and willing face (and beat) him in a duel is inspiring and truly badass.
Even though she is easy to hate, Cersei Lannister still deserves credit for being one of the most badass and determined women in Game of Thrones. Since she was a young girl, Cersei has never let anyone stop her from getting what she wants. When she is of age, her father marries her off to a man she loathes, but Cersei knows how to play the game better than anyone.
She births only the children she had with her twin brother, but she makes the king believe they are his own blood. Then, she has her husband killed, so her eldest son can ascend the throne, granting her more power as the Queen Mother. Cersei has a way of doing things in secret, and she is one of the smartest and most patient women when it comes to taking down her enemies.
Whether it is because she is a red-head or because she is a wildling, Ygritte is one of the fierce women in Game of Thrones. After she meets Jon Snow, she has no problem spouting insults at him even while she has a knife to her throat. She knows how to get under others’ skin to psych them out and gain the upper hand.
When it comes to being in the Free Folk camp, Ygritte holds her own and does not let any man talk down to or about her. Even though fans were absolutely devastated that she and Jon Snow did not get their happily-ever-after, we do have to respect that she was loyal to her people while trying to fully understand her feelings for the young Crow.
In the beginning, Daenerys simply does as she is told. Her brother, Viserys, practically raised and brainwashed her to believe that she was nothing more than a pawn in his game. After she is married off to Khal Drogo, Daenerys realizes her status among the khalasar, and she learns to stand up for herself against her brother. Then, when she loses her husband and son to black magic, Daenerys vows to never let someone take advantage of her kindness again.
The Dragon Queen becomes the Breaker of Chains as she frees slaves from their masters, and she lets people have a voice who have been silenced by everyone else. Even though she becomes crazed with power, Daenerys is still one of the most respectable women for always going after what she wanted.
Lyanna Mormont may be small, but she is by far one of the fiercest young women in Game of Thrones. We first meet her when Jon and Sansa are desperately looking for support and men to fight with them in the north. After some initial hesitation and very targeted comments, Lyanna agrees to support the Starks.
She admits that she does not have many men to spare, but she swears, with fight in her voice, that every man from Bear Island fights with more power and loyalty than any other in the kingdom. When it comes time to battle the White Walkers, Lyanna is in the thick of it, commanding and fighting alongside the many men.
After Yara lost her three brothers in a rebellion — two were killed and Theon was taken hostage by Ned Stark — she was practically raised as her father’s last surviving son. Instead of telling Yara to be a proper lady, she was taught to command her own ships, how to fight, and how to one day rule the Iron Islands.
Yara is headstrong, and she does not miss out on any of the action when it comes to going to battle. Even Daenerys is impressed with her ability to strategize and look for the weakest link in her opponents. In the end, Yara proves that a woman is sometimes more capable of getting things done when in times of war than a man, and for that, she is a true badass.
When we first meet Ellaria, she seems like a level-headed and promiscuous woman. She is Oberyn Martell’s unwed lover, and after his brutal death, she becomes filled with range and vengeance. She tries to convince Oberyn’s brother to go to war with the Lannisters, but he refuses. Ellaria then takes matters into her own hands: she brings together three of Oberyn’s bastard daughters, also known as the Sand Snakes, to carry out a plan to hurt the Lannister family.
Ellaria is ruthless and smart with how she goes about killing Cersei’s only daughter, Myrcella, with a special kind of slow-acting poison. The fear of war and death does not scare this Dornish woman like it would others. People should actually fear how far she is willing to go to protect and avenge those she loves.
When Osha is first introduced, she is a feral wildling who tries to steal Bran’s horse out from under him. She is captured by Robb Stark and brought back to Winterfell to be a servant. After some time, she and Bran form a bond because she is open and honest with him about everything he asks. When the castle is captured by Theon’s army, Osha cunningly finds a way to escape with Bran, his little brother Rickon, and the simpleminded servant, Hodor.
Osha is skilled in fighting, and she seems to always have an exit strategy. What makes her a truly amazing character is how she treats people who others tend to look down on. She does not ridicule Hodor for his mental state, and she is incredibly protective and kind to the two Stark boys.
In the time period of corsets,
One of the most inventive sci-fi films released by a mainstream outlet in recent memory, Brian Duffield’s “No One Will Save You” wastes little time before showing its audience that they’re watching something different. The film follows Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), an agoraphobic young homebody who is perfectly content to hide out in her late mother’s ornate house to avoid confronting her traumas. But when faced with a break-in from an unexpected alien visitor, she’s forced to spring into defense mode to protect her home.
It would be natural to expect a lengthy chase sequence before building up to a final showdown that reveals the identity of her extraterrestrial assailant. But Duffield takes the opposite approach, placing Brynn face-to-face with a stereotypical grey alien in the film’s opening minutes. In an interview with IndieWire, Duffield explained why he decided to blow up the conventional alien invasion formula in the film’s opening minutes with the hope of creating something unique.
“I just wanted to do the thing you’re never supposed to do,” Duffield said. “A lot of alien movies end with ‘Oh here’s the alien!’ And they defeat it and you’re kind of… credits. I hadn’t seen a movie where these guys had traveled lightyears to get here and they’re hiding out. And I thought ‘If they came this far, walking into this girl’s house is not a big deal for them.’ It’s kind of like if we’re hiding from ants in our backyard. It doesn’t make sense in a galactic scale. So that was the impetus: they should just walk in and she should deal with this problem.”
The cat-and-mouse game that transpires between the aliens and Brynn is shaped by the details of the house that they walk into. Duffield’s largely dialogue-free script offered limited opportunities for exposition, so his design team took every opportunity to hide details about Brynn’s childhood in the set design.
“The house is the co-lead of the movie in a lot of ways,” he said. “It’s the thing she wants to protect, it’s the only thing she loves in this world, and it’s the thing that’s attacked. The most heartbreaking things that happen to her are when things are broken in the house, because she’s spent so long building this bubble for herself. It was great working with someone like [production designer Ramsey Avery], because he was able to build her little bubble and destroy it piece by piece.”
If you weren’t watching closely, you’d be forgiven for thinking that “No One Will Save You” is a period piece at first glance. Brynn lives in a carefully curated world of quaint antiques and exquisitely retro dresses — when she finally ventures out of her ’50s-inspired oasis, seeing her interact with laptops and Subarus is a jarring reminder that she lives in the 21st century.
“This is a girl that watches ‘Far From Heaven’ and is like ‘I wish I lived in that world,’” Duffield said. “And then was like ‘I’m gonna antique shop, I’m gonna build dresses, I’m gonna do all this stuff. I’m not gonna have relationships outside my world, so why can’t I live in a Douglas Sirk wannabe world?’ And then you see there’s a flat screen and a laptop and she drives out into the world and you see ‘Oh, this girl’s kooky.”
One of the most unique details in Brynn’s house is an elaborate miniature village made of birdhouses. On the surface, it’s a convenient prop for one of the film’s most amusing indoor set pieces. But Duffield explained that the village offers a look into Brynn’s relationship with her mother and the memories that she’s hell-bent on preserving. It’s one of the emotional keys to the film — but it only happened because his original plans to use a Lemax Halloween village were vetoed.
“I liked this idea that there was something she had started doing with her mom as a kid and kept doing,” Duffield said. “In the script, since it’s Halloween, it was originally Lemax houses, which are spooky little towns that you build. The idea is you buy one a year and can kind of build up this village. And then Lemax said no, because of something that happened with one of the houses. Which I was like “that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, because you’re a Halloween company and what happens with your product would be the coolest thing that ever happened. I was bummed and Ramsay was like ‘I think it should be birdhouses.’”
Not to be deterred, Duffield and Avery went back to the drawing board and came up with the idea of birdhouses. In addition to the village, they found a way to work the motif throughout the film as a way to connect Brynn to her mother and her alien adversaries.
“And [Avery] came up with this whole backstory between her mom and her and these birdhouses,” he said. “There’s birdhouses throughout the movie outside, you have to try and spot them. The idea was that she was also creating a world, and certain other characters were also trying to create a new world, and maybe there was something in common there.”
The film is filled with dazzling visual effects and intergalactic travel, but Duffield says he’s convinced that birdhouses might be the real key to understanding it.
“When you watch the movie again, there’s a lot in that birdhouse village that explains the movie,” he said.
“No One Will Save You” is now streaming on Hulu.

Welcome to What’s On, our weekly picks of must-watch shows. Here’s what you need to watch from Sunday, September 24 to Thursday, September 28. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekend edition of What’s On drops on Fridays.]
Krapopolis (Fox, Sunday, 8 p.m.)
Dan Harmon’s latest animated sitcom, Krapopolis, is set in mythical ancient Greece where a flawed family of humans, gods, and monsters tries to run the world’s first city without killing each other. The show has already been renewed all the way through season three, so it’s safe to say Fox has complete trust in its potential viewership numbers. Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Hannah Waddingham, Alanna Ubach, Will Forte, Pam Murphy, and Jane Lynch comprise the voice cast. Here’s a bit from The A.V. Club’s review:
World-building and characterization unfold efficiently enough, checking off milestones in human development. War is (kinda) averted with the cannibals next door; the Olympic Games are invented by accident; and humans and wolves learn to live together. Goodness knows there’s anthropological raw material to fuel multiple seasons, but the formula starts to feel tired.
Reservation Dogs (FX, Wednesday, 12:01 a.m.)
Reservation Dogs is a truly special show—and now it’s coming to an end as its third season winds down. The beautiful coming-of-age series is equal parts hilarious and nuanced, diving into the lives of four Indigenous teens in rural Oklahoma as they try to navigate the world. The FX gem wraps with its series finale, titled “Dig,” on September 27. Look for The A.V. Club’s recap and additional coverage.
Starstruck (Max, Thursday, 3:01 a.m.)
Rose Matafeo’s sweet rom-com Starstruck returns for a third season. The British show follows Jessie (Matafeo), who works at the cinema and as a nanny. After a one-night stand, she begins an on-again-off-again relationship with movie star Tom Kapoor (Nikesh Patel). While season two ended with both of them finally getting together, it looks like the new episodes feature yet another breakup. The A.V. Club’s review of the latest batch publishes on Monday.
Savior Complex (HBO, Tuesday, 9 p.m.)
Savior Complex is a three-part docuseries about the controversial story of Renee Bach, a young American missionary who claims she was called by God to set up a charity for malnourished children in Uganda. Years later, shocking allegations arose that she was treating the sick children without medical qualifications.
Castlevania: Nocturne (Netflix, Thursday, 3:01 a.m.)
In this spinoff of Castlevania, Richter Belmont (Edward Bluemel), a descendant of a vampire-hunting clan, joins forces with an unlikely crew of hunters and magicians to prevent an apocalypse during the French Revolution. Thuso Mbedu, Zahn McClarnon, and Pixie Davies round out the voice cast.
The Irrational (NBC, Monday, 10 p.m.)
The Irrational chronicles Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin), a behavioral-psychology expert who often aids the FBI with strange cases, ranging from a suspicious plane crash to polonium poisoning. All the while, he’s trying to solve the mystery of a bombing from years ago. Here’s a snippet from The A.V. Club’s review:
The Irrational has one big accomplishment. It’s a rare network TV drama to actually make its primetime debut this fall. Thanks to the AMPTP withholding a fair deal with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the network TV schedule looks completely different in 2023, with mostly reality and competition series dominating the slate. The Irrational and NBC’s upcoming Found are exceptions because they completed filming pre-strike. So just for merely existing, it’s filling a particular void of familiar storytelling.
Devil’s Plan (Netflix, Tuesday, 3:01 a.m.)
Competition series Devil’s Plan follows in the footsteps of other recent South Korean hits like Physical 100. It’s a survival game show that plays plenty of mind tricks on its 12 participants, who are from all walks of life. The winner gets 500 million Korean won, which is about $377,000.
The Golden Bachelor (ABC, Thursday, 8 p.m.)
There’s no age limit to finding love, and The Golden Bachelor will make damn sure you know that. ABC bolsters its Bachelor franchise with this new reality series, in which 72-year-old widower Gerry Turner hopes to find a special someone from a roster of 22 contestants.
Only Murders In The Building (Hulu, Tuesday, 12:01 a.m.)
The Morning Show (Apple TV+, Wednesday, 12:01 a.m.)
Ahsoka (Disney+, Wednesday, 3:01 a.m.)
The Voice (NBC, Monday, 8 p.m., season 24 premiere)
Dancing With The Stars (ABC, Tuesday, 8 p.m., season 32 premiere)
The Masked Singer (FOX, Wednesday, 8 p.m., season 10 premiere)
The Amazing Race (CBS, Wednesday, 9:30 p.m., season 35 premiere)

Breeders (FX, Monday, 10 p.m., series finale)
Physical (Apple TV+, Wednesday, 12:01 a.m., series finale)
Strange Planet (Apple TV+, Wednesday, 12:01 a.m., season one finale)
Teenage Euthanasia (Adult Swim, Thursday, 12:01 a.m. season two finale)

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! In director Ellen Kuras’ Lee, Kate Winslet stars as Lee Miller, the real-life model who became a celebrated photographer and war correspondent for Vogue during World War II. Alexander Skarsgård puts on an English accent as her husband Roland Penrose. At the same time, Andy Samberg takes a dramatic turn as her partner in the field (and sometimes in the bedroom), David E. Scherman, a war correspondent for Life.
I always knew that my grandmother was a nurse during WWII, but she almost never talked about it. Only years after she died, when I was going through old photographs, I discovered just a hint of her amazing life. There she was, stunning in her 20s, taking pictures at Pearl Harbor, later partying carefree and at dinner parties with a mysterious circle of friends. Of course, she wasn’t just a mother or grandmother; she had a whole and rich life of her own. Intellectually, I knew that, but seeing the photos as an adult made me truly comprehend it on a gut level.
Now take that idea and imagine if she were a famous war correspondent, and there were amazing photographs taken before, during, and after the war. And imagine if I had gotten to interview her about it and have her tell her story. That’s the conceit of Lee, written by Liz Hannah, Marion Hume, and John Collee. The photographer is being interviewed later in life, and we flashback to her younger days as a model in Paris and later as a photographer in England and on the battlefield. Sometimes, we see a haunting photograph and come to understand how it was taken.
The romance between Roland and Lee is believable enough, especially when they are courting in France. The model and the gallery owner/artist had a circle of friends including the likes of Pablo Picasso (Enrique Arce) and Man Ray (Sean Duggan), surrealist poet Paul Eluard (Vincent Colombe), Nusch Eluard (Noémie Merlant), Ady Fidelin (Zita Hanrot) and the fashion editor of French Vogue, Solange D’Ayen (Marion Cotillard). In France, their lives are relatively carefree, including playful topless picnics. That would soon change.
“…her younger days as a model in Paris and later as a photographer in England and on the battlefield.”
Roland and Lee would move to England, and after the Nazi invasion of France, their friends would suffer terribly. Lee is hired as a photographer for British Vogue by Audry Withers (Andrea Riseborough), but the British government won’t send her over to the continent where she longs to be. Eventually, she makes her way there and partners up with her friend and photographer, David, and the two become a team. They actually see combat and are among the first to document the horrors of the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau. Samberg is great in a fully dramatic role, although he doesn’t have a considerable amount of lines. The focus is solidly on Lee.
This flashback structure of Lee is handled extraordinarily well by Kuras, who has a long and well-respected career as a cinematographer. She’s also directed series episodes for The Umbrella Academy, Legion, and Ozark. Every aspect here is tight and compelling, feeling like a definitive, timeless story. Of course, the imagery is astounding, which is no small feat when recreating well-known photographs by a legendary photographer.
Winslet manages to completely sell the character in different phases of life. In later life, Lee is rough and combative — we can see the toll of the years on her face and voice. But as a younger woman, she has a sense of rebellion, but she’s full of life and thirsts for adventure. And yet, Lee remains an enigma who longed for a more prominent place in the world but then shied away from the spotlight.
Lee is beautiful, daring, and elusive, as all great art should be. It’s a fitting tribute to a woman whose work exhibited the same qualities.
Lee screened at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! In
Proof that deer experienced elevated stress in response to wildfires in British Columbia’s southern Interior can be found in their feces, say researchers, although researchers say there’s still much to learn about what increasingly severe blazes mean for wildlife.
Shaun Freeman, a wildlife and habitat biologist with the Skeetchestn First Nation, said his team began gathering mule deer pellets in August 2021, while two large fires were still burning in the area between Cache Creek and Kamloops, B.C.
The samples were sent to the Toronto Zoo, where testing revealed elevated concentrations of the stress-induced hormone cortisol.
Stress can affect the animals’ nutritional uptake, causing them to burn precious fat stores, and it can decrease their ability to produce offspring, Freeman said.
Cortisol levels have since dropped by around half in samples taken during more favourable conditions, he said, allowing the researchers to establish a baseline.
But the local mule deer population has been declining, and the Sparks Lake and Tremont Creek wildfires that together spanned 1,595 square kilometres scorched half of the animals’ key winter habitat in Skeetchestn territory, Freeman said.
The winter range has mature old-growth conifers, which help deer move through the forest by shielding the ground from deep snowfall. The trees’ needles and arboreal lichens also provide food during the sparse winter months, he explained.
Swathes of forests burned by the 2021 wildfires have shifted to the kind of habitat that deer would forage in during the summer, he said.
With access restrictions in response to the wildfires lifting this fall, the First Nation has asked people to stay out of the areas burned in 2021, especially at low elevations frequented by deer,in order to minimize stressors and disturbances.
Adam Ford, Canada research chair in wildlife restoration ecology based at the University of B.C.’s Okanagan campus, said there are many unknowns and variables when it comes to understanding the impacts of wildfire on wildlife.
The effects vary over the short and long term and across seasons and species, as well as different types of habitats and how animals use those areas, he said.
Ford said the return of fire to the landscape after decades of aggressive suppression efforts could actually be a “net benefit” for most wildlife.
But for that to happen it has to be the right kind of fire, and it must be combined with land-management approaches that support overall ecosystem health, he said.
“We’re going to have fires regardless,” Ford said. “What we want to see is the return of good fire, cultural fire, prescribed fire.”
Cultural fire — the strategic blazes Indigenous Peoples used to steward the land before fire suppression ramped up with colonization — would have led to explosions of vegetation for wildlife to feast on, among other benefits, Ford said.
Yet climate change is fuelling increasingly large, severe wildfires, and their effects interact with other disturbances, such as clear-cut logging and reforestation.
As fire returns to the landscape, Ford said it’s important to manage those impacts.
If an ecosystem is already “sputtering along, then fire could be bad,” he said.
The predominant approach in B.C. is to replant logged or burned areas with coniferous trees intended to feed the forest industry. It’s also common practice to remove deciduous treesthat would otherwise play important roles in the ecosystem, including support for wildlife, Ford said.
“The problem is people think restoration is planting trees. You’re restoring people’s access to timber, but you’re not restoring the habitat (or) the ecosystem,” he said.
“If we want (wildfire) to be a benefit, then maybe we don’t let all these other activities come in after the fire,” Ford said. “Maybe we enjoy the flush of deciduous understory and don’t see it as competition for softwood lumber species.”
Fire can be used to promote regeneration and biodiversity on the landscape, agreed Sarah Dickson-Hoyle, an ecologist working with the Secwepemcul’ecw Restoration and Stewardship Society, of which Skeetchestn First Nation is a member.
“But that contrasts really drastically with these extensive high severity burns.”
The onset of “megafire” has prompted calls for scientists to deepen their understanding of the long-term effects and trajectories of recovery, she said.
Secwepemc territories have been affected by several large, high-intensity blazes in recent years, including the 1,900-square-kilometre Elephant Hill fire in 2017.
Work so far has revealed limited short-term recovery in areas that wereseverelyscorched, said Dickson-Hoyle, an intern with the innovation organization Mitacs and a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of B.C.’s faculty of forestry.
“We’re seeing much lower diversity for those understory plants, for the shrubs, the grasses, the wildflowers that are not only the biggest part of biodiversity in those forests, but are really important for wildlife forage,” she said.
“Understanding the impacts of these megafires is also bringing to the forefront that these fires in many of the landscapes in B.C. are not what those areas would have been adapted to. It’s outside the historical range,” she added.

Kane Brown fell hard for Katelyn Jae Brown (née Krapf) the moment they met.
“We met down in Florida at my very first show ever, I believe it was in 2015,” the “Heaven” crooner recalled during an August 2020 interview with Radio.com. “The day before that show, I was supposed to be in her music video because she was an artist as well, and it couldn’t happen cause my show was the same day as the music video.”
He continued: “A year goes by and the same guy we were working with brings her to a show, she didn’t want to come and he forced her, basically. We met, we didn’t talk at all — I maybe said hey to her — but I thought she was adorable and I kept looking at her all night. So I asked her to come to Nashville, like, the next day, I flew her down and we just hit it off and she never left!”
Kane proposed in April 2017 before Us Weekly confirmed in October 2018 that they got married in Nashville.
Less than one year after their nuptials, Kane and Katelyn expanded their family, welcoming daughter Kingsley in October 2019. Daughter Kodi Jane followed in December 2021.

Republican primary candidate Chris Christie joined new “Meet The Press” host Kristen Welker on Sunday to talk his campaign, his former support for Donald Trump and the indictment of Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez.
When asked about voters who feel like they’re getting whiplash after seeing Christie defend Trump during previous controversies, Christie said, “Well, they shouldn’t feel like it, because I’ve explained it really well. First off, I supported him in 2016 because he was going to be the nominee, and I didn’t want Hillary Clinton to be president of the United States. And I make no apologies for that. I still don’t want Hillary Clinton to be President of the United States.”
Christie cited the turning point for him: Nov. 3, 2020.
“I broke from the president very clearly, from President Trump, on election night 2020,” Christie said. “When you stand before the American people behind the seal of the president, in the East Room of the White House and say the election has been stolen when it wasn’t, and there’s no evidence to prove that it’s stolen now nearly three years later, that to me, made it a disqualifying moment for Donald Trump.”
Christie again defended his decisions based on the choices available in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
“Listen, American elections are about who’s left to vote for, and I made the decisions I made then. And Donald Trump left me; I didn’t leave him,” Christie said.
Explaining why he felt what happened in 2020 was different than when Trump claimed Iowa was stolen in the 2016 primary by Ted Cruz, Christie responded that he pointed it out on the debate stage during that primary, and that “this is much different, much different. When you’re president of the United States and people think you actually know something they don’t know, because you’re president of the United States, that’s what made what he did in 2020 so destructive. And we know from looking at what’s happened since then that lots of American people believed it because he was president, because they thought he knew things they didn’t know.”
Christie also explained why he apparently changed positions on Trump’s famous phone call threatening to withhold military aid for Ukraine with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“What you need to do is to make sure that when you get all of the facts you don’t stay handcuffed to something that you said when you didn’t know all the facts,” Christie said. “And by the way, he’s also made very clear that he didn’t want to be supportive of Ukraine anyway, Kristen. And he’s made that clear by making clear he turned Ukraine over to Vladimir Putin in 24 hours if he became president again. That’s not the kind of person we want in the Oval Office. That’s the kind of person who will destabilize Europe and will destabilize the world by America not being the leader.”
On another topic, Christie said that he’s not going to run against indicted Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez for his New Jersey Senate seat, even assuming Christie were to lose the Republican primary.
“I have no interest in being the United States Senate,” Christie said, agreeing with Welker that he’s ruling it out completely. “I had a chance to appoint myself to the United States Senate, Kristen, in 2013 when Frank Lautenberg passed away and I was governor. If I didn’t appoint myself to the United States Senate, the easiest way to get there, I sure as heck am not going to run for it.”
When it comes to his primary chances, Christie argued that Republican voters in Iowa and New Hampshire haven’t made up their minds yet. Welker asked Christie why he isn’t gaining traction in the Republican primary, citing new NBC News polling data out Sunday.
“Well Kristen, look. I know you all spent a whole lot of money on national polls, so I don’t mean to go after the polling folks, but the fact is that national polls don’t matter. We don’t have a national primary,” Christie said.
He went on to cite Donald Trump’s numbers in Iowa and New Hampshire polls, with around 60% of voters not supporting Trump — which he said means they’re open to alternatives.

Actress Kerry Washington is preparing to release her most personal project yet: her memoir “Thicker Than Water,” set for release Tuesday. In the book, Washington dives deeply into personal topics including the revelation that her dad is not her biological father — a fact that she only found out recently.
Washington’s parents finally told her the truth ahead of her appearance on Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s PBS series “Finding Your Roots.” After Washington’s mom and dad approached Gates with this information, he encouraged Valerie and Earl to come clean with their daughter.
The news “really turned my world upside down,” Washington tells People. Her parents had opted to use a sperm donor to conceive after struggling with infertility, and the actress says that finally being told the truth allowed her to have “so much more love and compassion and understanding for my parents.”
It also allowed her to love herself, she says. Elsewhere in the memoir Washington admits to struggling with anxiety, self-esteem and an eating disorder for years. She believes now that this secret is connected to those experiences.
“I think that dissonance of like, ‘Somebody is not telling me something about my body,’ made me feel like there was something in my body I had to fix,” she said.
The “Scandal” star previously spoke to Robin Roberts about her mental and physical health journey as part of a “20/20” special that airs Sunday.
“It scared me that I could not want to be here because I was in so much pain,” she told Roberts. “The behavior was tiny little acts of trying to destroy myself.”
The press release for the book also states that “Thicker Than Water” will offer “an intimate view into both her public and private worlds — as an artist, an advocate, an entrepreneur, a mother, a daughter, a wife, a Black woman.”
