Stuart Gordon is known as a master of horror, earning the title from his work on such seminal 1980s genre films as “Re-Animator,” “From Beyond” and “Dolls.” But the director, who died in March 2020, was also a master storyteller — so his family can be forgiven for sometimes wondering if he was prone to fabulation.

“I would compare it to the movie ‘Big Fish’ in how someone might exaggerate,” recalls Jillian Gordon, one of his three daughters. “He would tell you these stories and you’d think, ‘Is that really what happened?’ It was only after he passed and I was going through his emails and archives that I realized it was all true.”

Indeed, Gordon made movies, but his own life had enough twists, turns and serendipitous encounters to be its own film. And now those stranger-than-fiction tales will be shared with audiences when his memoir, “Naked Theater and & Uncensored Horror,” is published in September by FAB Press. For horror fans, the book contains plenty of behind-the-scenes tales about the making of Gordon’s cult classics — and comes with an afterword from his “Re-Animator” star and frequent collaborator Jeffrey Combs.

But readers will also learn the stories of Gordon’s early years in experimental theater — from his nude production of “Peter Pan” in college, which found him arrested on obscenity charges, to founding Chicago’s Organic Theater Company, where he collaborated with burgeoning actors and future household names like Dennis Franz and Joe Mantegna and directed the first production of David Mamet’s breakthrough play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago.”

Told with the offbeat humor and style that was a signature of so much of Gordon’s work, the memoir doesn’t just focus on the horror. It also presents a decades-long love story between Gordon and his wife, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, whom he met after drunk dialing a number from his college campus directory. Married in 1968, the two would go on to collaborate many times on stage and screen — in fact, she frequently met a grisly end under his direction. “It is true he developed a habit of killing me off in his movies,” Purdy-Gordon notes. “But we had a wonderful marriage, so go figure.”

Purdy-Gordon says her husband began working on the memoir in 2013, after penning several stories for various blogs and publications. While nothing in the book surprised her, she concedes she might have a different perception of some of the events described. “Over the years, he would read passages to me aloud. Sometimes I would stop and say, ‘This is not the way I remember it’ or I’d offer some factual correction,” Purdy-Gordon says with a laugh. “He would tolerate a few of these. But if there were too many, he’d say, ‘Why don’t you write your own damn memoirs?’”

Interspersed with the tales of creating monsters and bloodshed, these personal stories paint a portrait of a loving husband and doting father to daughters Suzanna, Jillian and Margaret. Jillian Gordon notes the apparent contradiction between work and home life gave her a happy if unusual childhood. Not many kids lived in an Italian castle that also doubled as the set for the 1995 film “Castle Freak,” in which a family is stalked by a disfigured monster. “I’d be in my room, and he would say, ‘So, don’t open this door because you’re going to see a creature running around and it’s the scariest thing ever, OK?’” she recalls. “‘And don’t worry about the screaming.’”

William H. Macy says this dichotomy was vital to Gordon’s work: “He was a loyal friend and a family man with the most infectious laugh. He did the most horrifying stuff on stage and screen, but it worked because of his sense of irony and because of Stuart’s true humanity.”

Though the two became friends in Chicago in the 1970s, they didn’t work together until the 2005 film adaptation of the Mamet play “Edmond.” It’s a relentless tale of one ordinary man’s descent into darkness, and Macy admits the story isn’t easy to summarize. “I would tell people, ‘It’s about a guy who loses his mind, goes on a bender and ends up killing a waitress. And then things go bad.’”

Citing it as one of his most challenging roles, the actor says the wrong director could have made the indie shoot unbearable. “Stuart created a very lovely, safe environment no matter how ugly the story could get,” Macy notes. He recalls shooting a scene where he had to walk naked through a prison wearing only a modesty sock. “It’s always a thrill to take off all your clothes in front of a bunch of Teamsters and guys who are catcalling you. At one point, Stuart yelled cut and called me over. He said, ‘Bill, I don’t know how to say this. But could we get a shorter sock?’ Everyone burst out laughing, and all the tension was gone.”

Gordon’s provocateur nature wasn’t for everyone — including those who loved him most. The first show he staged while a student at the University of Wisconsin was called “The Game Show,” a play on “Let’s Make a Deal” and the ilk that he sought to make as uncomfortable as possible. That included turning up the heat in the theater and pretending to chain the doors, trapping the audience inside. Contestants were humiliated or even beaten while ushers walked the aisles with billy clubs, threatening anyone who might leave. As it turned out, all the participants were actors, but the unknowing audience revolted. Purdy-Gordon even broke up with him over the show, calling it irresponsible. Still, the production was hailed by a local critic as “revolutionary” and the entire run sold out.

One of the show’s audience members was future Tony winner André De Shields, then a fellow student and years away from cementing himself as a Broadway legend in shows like “Hadestown” and “Ain’t Misbehavin.’” “I fell for the whole thing,” the actor recalls. “I was one of those who stood up and yelled, ‘Stop! You can’t do this!’”

De Shields would go on to work with Gordon multiple times, playing Tiger Lily in the infamous “Peter Pan” production and appearing in several shows at the Organic. In fact, it was Gordon’s production of “Warp!” a wildly successful sci-fi epic, that gave De Shields his Broadway debut when the show transferred in 1973. Though the show only ran eight performances, De Shields stayed — and flourished — in New York.

“Warp!”, which predated “Star Wars” by several years, was just one incident where De Shields believes the director was prescient. He also cites a college production of “Titus Andronicus” where early humans gathered around a campfire grunting. “No less than a year later, I saw Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’” says De Shields. “And I saw that scene that opens the film, I thought, ‘My God, Stuart is ahead of his time.’”

Even years later, De Shields reveals, he has fond memories of their work together. “When I think of Stuart, I think of how he is intertwined with my destiny,” De Shields says. “I don’t get lost in nostalgic memories daily. But when I have to consider what I’ve done, there is a very important page in the book of my life that has to do with Stuart Gordon and the Organic Theatre Company.”

The same can be said of George Wendt, who met Gordon in Chicago when the future “Cheers” star was active at the Second City comedy theater. The two collaborated through multiple movies, all the way through “Re-Animator: The Musical,” the award-winning stage adaptation that debuted in 2011 and played all over the world. A critical and commercial hit, the show used practical effects to re-create some of the film’s most memorable scenes and even had the first few rows designated as a “splash zone” due to the blood effects that would spray on the audience.

“Working with Stuart was always a blast,” Wendt recalls. “Fun and challenging in the best way. He would work tirelessly and tirelessly until he got it. Sometimes he would send me the most outlandish ideas for a script, and I’d go, ‘That’s great, Stuart.’ As soon as I hung up the phone, I figured I didn’t have to worry about it, because it was never going to happen. The next thing you know, he’d call me up and say we were making it.”

As with his wife, Gordon had a habit of killing off his good friend Wendt in creative ways in projects like “Space Truckers” and “King of the Ants.” It was Wendt who brought the latter to Gordon in the form of the book by Charlie Higson. Wendt had been considering another project by Higson when he handed him a copy of “King of the Ants.” “It was grisly and twisted and I immediately loved it,” Wendt recalls. “I asked him, ‘Have you ever thought about doing a movie of this?’ He said, ‘Loads of people have mentioned it would be a good movie, but they get frightened and say they could never make something like this.’”

To which Wendt responded, “You know, I think I might have the guy.”

Wendt says that Gordon believed in not shying away from violence. “He really thought it was important to portray and not to pussyfoot or cut away from the gruesomeness,” Wendt notes. “If you’re going to show violence, don’t just shoot someone and walk away from it. You should feel the pain and the horror of it and truly linger on it.”

Gordon, who bragged of using almost 30 gallons of fake blood in “Re-Animator,” was a big believer in “more is more” when it came to pretty much everything — in fact, at one point his memoir was to be called “More Is More.”

“Re-Animator” star Barbara Crampton recalls that when shooting the morgue scene where the zombies advance on her, Gordon kept asking for more until she responded, “I’m giving it to you but it’s never enough — more is not enough.” Crampton says, “Mick Garris once pointed out to me that Stuart’s movies were very operatic. I think that’s true. He was always playing to the back of the house.”

Crampton, who made two more films with Gordon (“From Beyond” and “Castle Freak”), says that despite the on-screen anguish, working with him was always a delight. “He made himself an ally to you, and I always felt safe under his direction. For all his shocking scenes and pushing the limits, he was an incredibly sweet and gentle soul.”

Gordon’s influence on future horror creatives cannot be underestimated. Legends like makeup artist Rick Baker and directors Garris and Rob Zombie sing his praises in the book’s introduction. Peter Jackson, who once had a friendly competition with Gordon to see who could use the most blood on-screen, notes, “I am one of those filmmakers who was forever changed by seeing movies like ‘Re-Animator’ and ‘From Beyond.’”

Graham Skipper, who played the role of Herbert West in “Re-Animator: The Musical!,” became a good friend of Gordon’s as well. When making his feature directorial debut with the horror film “Sequence Break,” Skipper sought advice from his mentor. “He said, ‘I’ll give you the same advice Roger Corman gave his directors, which is wear comfortable shoes and sit down often,’” Skipper recalls. “And he reminded me that this is a marathon, not a sprint.”

In his final years, Gordon made a return to his theater roots, helming award-winning productions of “Taste,” based on the true story of a pair of cannibals, and reuniting with Combs for the solo show “Nevermore: An Evening With Edgar Allan Poe.” Like “Re-Animator: The Musical!” these productions began life in small L.A. theaters but went on to have a huge impact. Skipper says that when it came to the long run of “Re-Animator: The Musical!” Gordon wasn’t just there every night — some times he was running the lights.

As a director, Skipper says Gordon never stopped wanting to put on the best show possible. On their very last show in Las Vegas in 2015, Skipper says Gordon came up to him to give him notes. “I was like, ‘Stuart, it’s literally the final show!’” Skipper says with a laugh. “And he looked at me with a totally straight face and said, ‘Yeah, and we’re going to have one last chance to get it right.’”

While Gordon will be remembered by many for his iconic work in the horror genre, those who knew him best all reveal stories of a collaborator, friend, father and husband. The L.A. home Gordon shared with Purdy-Gordon is adorned with gorgeous drawings and paintings the filmmaker created over the years, along with photos of his family and stage productions. “I think my favorite thing about the book is how it talks about the work but also the family,” says Jillian Gordon. “And it really is in his voice. My kids can read this book and it’s going to sound like their grandpa telling them his stories.”

Stuart Gordon is known as a master

When Earvin “Magic” Johnson revealed his HIV diagnosis to the world in 1991, not much was known about the immune disease and fear was high. Johnson didn’t know what his future would look like, or how the world would receive the news. But, as he tells Variety, he knew that he still wanted to be with his wife, Cookie, forever.

And the feeling was mutual. Despite the odds being against the Lakers legend, he went on to play for several more years until retiring in 1996. Magic and Cookie Johnson became HIV/AIDS activists, aiming to educate the public and raise funds for medical research.

Through their Magic Johnson foundation, the couple has given over $15 million to underserved Black and other communities of color across the country. That’s why, on Sept. 21, the couple will be honored with the Elizabeth Taylor Commitment to End AIDS Award at the Elizabeth Taylor Ball to End AIDS. Hosted by Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance, the Elizabeth Taylor Ball to End AIDS will be held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

“We’re in line with each other because the Elizabeth Taylor Foundation, they do a lot of work in underserved communities and that’s where Cookie and I built our business,” Magic Johnson told Variety. “We were out educating people in the Black and brown community, and we raised a lot of money to takeucare of people. Cookie and I had the same mindset, had the same heart. We wanted to bring an end to HIV and AIDS in any way that we could. So, this is special for us.”

An edited version of our interview with the Johnsons follows below.

How did you react after finding out you were being honored by the Elizabeth Taylor Foundation? How did that relationship with the foundation come about?

Magic Johnson: Cookie and I were truly blessed and excited about the evening because we worked with Elizabeth for years with Macy’s Passport [charity event] and we always used to love going in her trailer, her private area and talking to her. She would always have her dogs!

She had the biggest heart and she was so passionate about really making sure that people who are living with HIV and AIDS were getting their medicine, making sure that we talked about prevention and educating people about HIV and AIDS as well. Cookie and I were passionate about the same things. I think that’s why we had such an incredible relationship with Elizabeth. Then, to be able to raise all that money for HIV and AIDS organizations through Macy’s Passport at that time and now to know that we’ve been honored by her foundation, they’re doing everything that Elizabeth was about and fighting for back then. The foundation is doing a wonderful job of providing so many different services for people who are living with HIV and AIDS and social justice.

You’re being honored for your work as an advocate for those with HIV and AIDS. When you announced your diagnosis over 30 years ago, how did you manage to share that with the world?

Magic Johnson: To have Cookie’s support, it made it easier for me to tell the world. I also had the support of Dr. Buss, the Lakers and also the NBA. Knowing that Cookie and I had our strong relationship, and also our faith too. Because Cookie and I pray. Cookie’s a prayer warrior — and I think that helped us too. God really blessed me. The medicine and the support of my beautiful wife. But also those people in the league in terms of Dr. Buss, the Lakers. They supported me then and Commissioner David Stern supported me.

To know that you have all the people, as well as my parents, and my brothers and sisters. I can’t tell you how much that meant, knowing that I had their support as well. That helped me to go do what I needed to do to be here a long time.

And Cookie – don’t give her a task. She’s a task master. She’ll make sure you take your meds, “you’re doing it? You need to go to the gym.” We laugh about taking vitamins, herbs, and my wife will research everything. Even today, she’s still making sure, and that’s why we’re together. We laugh about it, but it’s serious. I think that’s why I’m still here and let’s give all the doctors and scientists credit too. There was one drug at that time, now there’s almost 40.

I’ve had a positive mindset and attitude, because the only thing in life I wanted really was to be with Cookie forever, and hopefully see that we would have some grandchildren. Our son Andre has provided that for us. I want to walk my daughter Lisa down the aisle one day and hopefully that happens. I want EJ also to be married as well. That’s what we’re going for. So, when you think about me, I’m just happy. It’s been going on 32 years. My wife has been amazing. She’s educated a lot of women about how you support your husband or your boyfriend. She’s been on panels, talking about what she did for me, and how she stood strong. I’m really happy about the job that Cookie has been doing.

Cookie, you stood by Magic at such a tough moment in both of your lives. What went into that decision?

Cookie Johnson: It’s huge when a person is diagnosed, and they have the support system from their family. That the family is there to boost them up when they’re when feeling low, to make sure that they’re taking their meds, to make sure they’re eating healthy, getting their exercise. It’s a whole lifestyle and if your family is not on board, or if you don’t have a support system, it makes it a little bit harder. I think it also makes it a little lonely, and people can get depressed. It was so important that I was there for Earvin and supported him. And we learned about the disease together, we fought it together.

We had just gotten married, but we’d been together off and on for almost 12 years before we got married. So, I wasn’t going to just walk away. I loved him, number one. And because I loved him, I felt like, the first thing that was facing me was life or death. All the other stuff went out the window. To me, it was choose to stay with him to help him live, or leave him and watch him die. I loved him enough that I chose to stay and help him live and we figured it out together. Whatever we had to face, we were going to face it together. That was never an option to leave.

Holding on to my faith, knowing that all things work together for good to those who love the Lord, and believing in that, gave us the strength to carry on. From that day forward, the first thing we said was, okay, let’s learn as much as we can about that about this disease, and figure out how we can beat it because we were going to beat it. That was our option and that’s what we had in front of us because God does not just let you go away. I believed that he was going to be with us, strengthening us, guiding us. With that in mind, we went for it.

How did the diagnosis change you and your family’s lives?

Magic Johnson: The experience definitely made our love and our marriage stronger. We had another purpose in life. That purpose was to raise a lot of money for HIV and AIDS organizations. We also went out and educated our people because the Black and brown community – at that time, there were so many myths, so much misinformation out there. So Cookie and I just got out there and educated our Black and brown community and also raised money to care for people.

Like Magic said, there was a lot of misinformation back then surrounding HIV and AIDS. But in an age where many still don’t fully believe in modern science, what do you think of the progress we’ve made?

Magic Johnson: It’s a better climate, because there’s so many more great organizations who are jumping in the HIV and AIDS fight, and there’s so many great doctors and scientists who are trying to come up with a cure. As we continue this journey, we have a lot more people living. See, this is the thing that, to me, is very important. There are a lot of people living healthy lives now who got diagnosed just like me, 30 years ago 40 years ago, 20 years ago. That couldn’t happen back then because we didn’t have the drugs. We didn’t have the information on how to be here for a long time. A lot has changed for the good.

Cookie Johnson: It’s great to see the advancements we made, but I think because people are so healthy and living long lives on medication, the young people are not scared. And then they’re not taking the precautions they need to be taking. As a result, the numbers are starting to go up a little higher again, and they’re getting sick and not doing what they’re supposed to be doing.

I think the answer is to continue to educate. We don’t feel like, because this has been around for a long time and people know what it is, that we should be quiet and not address it. It needs to be talked about a lot more because I really believe that young people don’t feel that they they can die from this disease. They’re not afraid of it. And they’re not taking the precautions they need to take.

Magic Johnson: What we want is to continue to make sure we drive the numbers down. Then one day, hopefully, the doctors or the scientists can come up with a cure. But we want to make sure that Elizabeth’s legacy continues to live on, because of the great work that she did in this field. We will both be in our communities, as long as we can talk about it.

When Earvin “Magic” Johnson revealed his HIV

There’s always a thrill that comes from discussing the adapted works of Stephen King. It’s especially exciting when they’re in a televised mini-series form.

Needful Things doesn’t quite have the ambitions of The Stand, and hasn’t penetrated the pop culture the way IT did. The story also doesn’t swing as broadly as Storm of the Century or sink to the same depths we see in The Tommyknockers. No, Needful Things as a novel and an adaptation sits comfortably in the middle. It isn’t the most desirable of King’s works, but it does just fine. Over the years, people may have gotten the wrong idea about what was supposed to be the town of Castle Rock’s final tale.

Needful Things is the story of a small town with a lot of unchecked tension that leaves certain people on edge. But if that were it, this drama would play out with only a few small incidents. To add gasoline and stoke the flames, a stranger enters town and opens up a shop of curiosities and goodies where the price is to die for — or at least, as long as a soul sounds cheap. This malicious force is making deals, giving customers everything they want in exchange for small favors. But these errands set people off, and violence ensues. We get to watch as the town breaks down and burns under the weight of its own avarice.

The cast is spectacular, with many of the small roles being noteworthy character actors. I won’t attempt to list them all here, but almost everyone sticks out in at least one scene. It’s impossible to miss Amanda Plummer as Nettie Cobb, J.T. Walsh’s explosive performance as Danforth “Buster” Keeton III, Bonnie Bedelia as Holly Gennaro McClane – I mean, Polly Chalmers, and of course the incredible Ed Harris takes on the role of Sheriff Alan J. Pangborn. That character was originally played by Michael Rooker in The Dark Half (1993 release, filmed in 1991), but the studio wanted to go with someone different — even against King’s wishes to bring him back.

But arguably the most important casting selection would be that of the town’s nemesis, Mr. Leland Gaunt — played to near perfection by Max von Sydow. He’s the best part of the experience, with a graceful flow between cordial gentleman and vengeful spirit; it’s like watching a tapestry be woven. He acts as both surgical instrument and shotgun, sadistically reveling in the destruction of the small hamlet. It’s hard to dislike the not-so-subtle hints about him being the devil, and he manages to turn horribly ham-fisted lines into graceful anecdotes. Gaunt is a treasure, but there’s always something happening behind the camera as well.

The duties of directing fell to Fraser C. Heston, the son of Charlton Heston, who worked with his father on most projects. Adapting a book into something feature-length is often difficult, especially one that has as much ambition and story to tell as Needful Things. Condensing all of the author’s details and moving parts into a neat box means that some elements will be lost – in this case, entire characters like Ace Merrill, who also appeared in Stand By Me. One big change was to the fate of Brian Rusk, an 11-year-old boy who felt guilty over his part in the chaos after agreeing to an exchange with Gaunt, leading to his eventual suicide. The studio apparently asked for this to be changed later on, having the movie awkwardly state that he had survived the attempt. It removes one of the more meaningful deaths from the story.

The violence is part of the thrill in this story. Scenes are creepy and foreboding, accompanied by some tonally appropriate music to drive it home. A few moments are jarring, and may make viewers want to pause. It’s a story about ‘80s excess, greed, and keeping secrets, with the classic trope of some problems being as simple as two people not speaking to each other. It all of this plays into the base themes, and as Gaunt himself says, “people kill people.”

The pacing is a little slow, but the material creates a solid buildup, only for the ending to fall a bit flat. This is the problem in both the book and film, as the fiery confrontation between Pangborn and Gaunt fizzles out. There are a few goofs that are hard to unsee – like the characters getting the title of the stolen book wrong – but it’s campy, something I feel just goes hand and hand with King. Some describe the novel as a sort of black comedy in parts, and perhaps they attempted to bring that influence over to the screen unsuccessfully. Even the author himself doesn’t think the book has held up over the years.

We’re our own worst critics, however, and although the initial film release of Needful Things was panned, a new extended version was commissioned for television as a mini-series, using cut material from the original shoot. This added a little over an hour of deleted scenes after some new editing, bringing the total runtime for this televised event to 187 minutes. Heston claims to prefer the theatrical release, but wished he could add an additional twenty minutes to it.

I adore the extra scenes in the extended cut, and appreciate how much clearer it makes some of the minor plots. That said, it isn’t hard to understand how most of these parts were initially discarded. Until this year, however, it was only available on places like YouTube. The lone official release of the extended cut for some time was as a bonus feature for one of the German DVDs. The new version will have even more footage, coming in at 191 minutes.

Everyone has something they need. For a select group, it was a new 4K or Blu-Ray version of this Stephen King tale. It isn’t his best, it’s far from his worst, but it’s definitely bound to be one of someone’s favorite things.

There’s always a thrill that comes from

Breakout Mexican singer-songwriter Peso Pluma has canceled his event in Tijuana, originally scheduled for Oct. 14 at Estadio Caliente in Baja California. The decision comes after the 24-year-old was targeted with alleged death threats emblazoned on banners across the city.

The news of the cancelation was confirmed by Peso Pluma’s labels, Double P Records and Prajin Music Group, in an Instagram story on Wednesday that stated they had made the decision in order to keep fans and crew safe.

“Our goal is to protect the fans and the team. For the safety of everyone involved, we will cancel our show in Tijuana,” the statement said. “Thank you so much to all our fans for understanding. We love you. Sincerely: La Doble P.”

Peso Pluma’s rise in popularity in the United States has been a rarity for the música Mexicana genre. He recently became the first Mexican artist to perform for the MTV Video Music Awards since their inception in the ’80s and was also the first Mexican act to perform on American late-night television (he appeared on the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in April).

The amplified attention has also come with its own set of obstacles. The banners targeting Peso Pluma were signed with initials that belong to the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, which reportedly prompted local authorities to launch an investigation into the credibility of the threats found in the border city.

According to numerous reports, the threatening banners warned the singer not to show up for his Oct. 14 show. “It will be your last performance because of your disrespectful loose tongue,” the banners read. Local reports also state a man had been arrested in connection to the banners.

Peso Pluma, along with numerous música Mexicana singers of present-day and past generations, often touch on narco-related themes in their ballads, from name-dropping powerful drug cartel leaders to making sly drug references. Before this, a string of Peso Pluma’s concerts in the United States were also postponed but no reason was provided by the artist’s team or concert promoters.

North Carolina duo Little Brother are still hustling after 20 years, and they’re continuing to make it everyone’s problem. Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh’s chemistry comes from their dueling approaches—Phonte with dazzling pop culture references, Pooh with measured and forceful bars that could flatten a brick. On “Glory Glory,” one of two new singles surprise dropped yesterday, that dynamic remains electrifying. Over an uncharacteristically smooth beat from Missouri producer Conductor Williams, Pooh and Phonte cooly stake claim to their legacy. Pooh reminisces on days listening to rap while his brother sold drugs (“I was rocking to [Big Daddy] Kane, my brother rocked ‘caine too”) and admonishes rappers who get complacent in their old age. Phonte spews acid at fickle music industry execs and people coming for their crown: “Just ‘cause you ain’t write it down, that don’t make you Hova.” Little Brother aren’t comfortable resting on their laurels; they’d rather keep growing.

Weekly Commentary (Updated Sept. 20, 2023): It’s a breath of fresh air to see a race where (at the moment) two women are leading the pack in three-hour+ movies.

Jennifer Lame, who has never been nominated despite cutting two best picture nominated movies — “Marriage Story” (2019) and “Manchester by Sea” (2016) — is in the best position yet to land her inaugural mention for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”

Her challenger is Martin Scorsese’s longtime collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker, the most awarded woman in the category’s history with three — “Raging Bull” (1980), “The Aviator” (2004) and “The Departed” (2006). She achieves the Herculean task of putting together the dense and beautifully made “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

If either woman won the race, they would be the first to take the category since Margaret Sixel for “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016).

And just because your movie has a long runtime doesn’t mean the Academy will automatically check your name off.

That could benefit a movie like Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” edited by Emmy winner Nick Houy (HBO’s “The Night Of”), who has worked with the filmmaker on her previous best picture nominated movies — “Lady Bird” and “Little Women.” Sadly, Houy was snubbed for both. Perhaps the third time is the charm?

We’re also aware there’s a big push by studios with animated contenders to get their films recognized in this race, notably GKids’ “The Boy and the Heron” and Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” The latter could get very close.

It seems like Amazon Prime Day was

Well, Amazon has just made our Christmas shopping lists a little bit easier – at the tech giant’s Devices & Services event it announced updates to pretty much all of its biggest tech products, while also introducing some new ones like the new Amazon Echo Hub and the temptingly cheap Fire TV Soundbar.

Aside from the new Echo smart speakers and Fire TV Stick 4K updates, the biggest news was arguably that Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant is getting an AI-powered upgrade. Yes, Amazon’s been dabbling with the likes of ChatGPT and made its own large language model (LLM) to help Alexa become more conversational, intelligent and, well, useful.

The bad news is this next-gen Alexa is only going to roll out slowly in the US as part of a preview program “in the coming months”. So in the meantime we’ll have to amuse ourselves with the hundreds of new gadgets Amazon just announced. Okay, hundreds is pushing it, but we did just see updates to its Echo Pop, Echo Show, Fire HD 10 tablet, Fire TV Stick 4K and lots more.

If you’re interested in a particular tech genre, use our jump links on the left to hop to the right section – or for a full digest of everything that was announced and all the pricing, dive straight into our list of Amazon’s new 2023 gadget lineup…

Amazon Echo smart speakers

1. Amazon Echo Pop Kids

  • $49.99 (around £40 / AU$77)
  • Available for pre-order today, shipping next month

The fun little Amazon Echo Pop smart speaker now has a Kids version – which you can buy in either Marvel’s Avengers or Disney Princess versions.

The idea is that kids can chat with the speaker’s built-in characters by asking them for facts, jokes or even hidden easter eggs. You also get six months of Amazon Kids Plus (usually $4.99 / £3.99 per month) with the speaker, which gives you hours of Harry Potter, Lego or National Geographic content to keep your kids entertained.

Amazon says it’s also adding dozens of exclusive Audible audiobooks to Kids Plus, including Marvel’s Avengers and Disney Princess stories, which could be handy for playground boasting.

2. Amazon Echo Show 8 (3rd gen)

The Amazon Echo Show 8 on a table next to two jugs

  • $149.99 / £149.99 (around AU$230)
  • Available for pre-order now, shipping next month

The current Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd gen) arrived back in 2021 just when video calls were at their peak, but Amazon’s just announced a successor with one particularly nifty trick – the ability to recognize how close you are to the speaker and change its content accordingly.

For example, this ‘Adaptive Content’ feature can apparently show you a simple news headline from a distance, but then switch to a more detailed view with touch controls when you’re closer. It’ll also roll out to other Echo Show devices “early next year”.

What else is new with the Echo Show 8 (3rd gen)? It now runs your Alexa requests locally, which will apparently make its responses 40% faster. There’s also improved sound quality with spatial audio and a newly-centered 13MP camera to boost video calls. It could be a useful smart home hub too, thanks to support for Zigbee, Sidewalk, Thread, Bluetooth, and Matter.

3. Amazon Echo Show 8 Photos Edition

Amazon Devices and Services Event 2023

  • $159.99 (around £130 / AU$250)
  • Available for pre-order now, shipping next month

Looking for a smart digital photo frame instead? Amazon’s also made an Echo Show 8 Photos Edition, which is largely identical to the standard 3rd gen model above aside from a special photography mode and some bonus Amazon Photos storage.

This version apparently makes your chosen photos the main focus of its screen, rotating your snaps every 30 seconds. And you also get 25GB of free Amazon Photos storage, too. Prime subscribers already get unlimited high-resolution photo storage, but they could use that extra storage to back up videos, too.

This Photos Edition apparently comes with a six-month ‘PhotosPlus’ subscription which will renew after six months for $1.99 per month. We’re still clarifying what this subscription actually entails and will update this story when we hear back.

Tablets

4. Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids and Fire HD 10 Kids Pro (2nd gen)

Amazon Devices and Services Event 2023

  • Both $189.99 / £199.99 (around AU$290)
  • Available for pre-order today, shipping next month

Despite its ridiculous name (a professional tablet for children?), we’ve long hailed the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro as one of the best tablets for kids. Well, it’s just been given an update alongside its non-Pro sibling.

Both are 10.1-inch tablets that are apparently lighter and 25% faster than their predecessors. Otherwise, the specs are largely the same as before, with a 1080p Full HD display, 3GB RAM and a 5MP camera all on board.

The main difference between the two is who they’re aimed at – the standard Fire HD 10 Kids is for 3- to 7-year-olds, while the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is for those ‘professional’ 6- to 12-year-olds. Actually, the “Pro” model gives your child more freedom with web browsing and apps, so beware before you hand it to a toddler.

You also get 12 months of Amazon Kids Plus for free with both tablets, while a new AI-powered Music Maker mode (which lets kids create songs with various instruments) is “coming soon”.

Amazon Echo Frames

5. Amazon Echo Frames (3rd gen)

Don’t worry, Amazon’s latest glasses don’t bother with mixed reality or creepy cameras – the Echo Frames (3rd gen) are simply designed to be your wearable, voice-controlled audio player.

The improvements this time are a boosted battery life (now at a claimed six hours) and the ability to pair the glasses with multiple devices. They also apparently deliver improved bass and come in seven new styles, including a couple of pretty stylish options from those respected purveyors of face furniture, Carrera.

The Echo Frames don’t use bone-conduction technology, instead using little speaker drivers above your ears to pipe sound into them without covering them. This also apparently minimizes what those around you can hear, though we’ll have to see how that plays out in reality.

You also get to choose from different lens options, including sunglasses lenses with UV400 protection, prescription-ready ones, or blue light lenses. There’s no news on a release date yet sadly, but you can head to the Echo Frames page to sign and be notified.

Amazon Fire TV sticks and soundbar

6. Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd gen)

Amazon Devices and Services Event 2023

  • $49.99 / £59.99 (around AU$77)

Just as we predicted earlier this month, Amazon has updated both of its Fire TV Stick 4K models. The standard Fire TV Stick 4K now supports Wi-Fi 6 (if you have a compatible router) and is apparently 30% more powerful than the last version, thanks to its updated 1.7 GHZ quad-core processor.

Like before, you can stream your TV and movies in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Atmos audio, and the Fire TV Stick 4K also offers broad HDR support in the form of Dolby Vision, HDR, HLG, and HDR10+.

More exciting is the promise of Fire TV’s new ‘AI-powered search’, which offers more conversational voice searches to help you find what to watch. For example, a demo showed someone asking “find some action movies for me”, followed by “show me the ones I haven’t seen yet” and then “which of these are okay for my teenagers to watch”. It’ll arrive on Fire TV products as a software update later this year.

7. Amazon Fire Stick 4K Max (2nd gen)

The Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max on a table next to popcorn

  • $59.99 / £69.99 (around AU$92)

We still rate the current Amazon Fire Stick 4K Max as one of the best streaming devices, and it’s just been given another speed and features boost with the second generation update.

The Max trumps the standard Fire TV Max 4K (above) with speedy Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, which means lower latency if you have the right router. It also now offers twice as much built-in storage (16GB) as its predecessor for storing apps and games.

Alongside the new ‘AI-powered’ Alexa voice searches mentioned above, the Max Stick also gets a ‘Fire TV Ambient Experience’ which effectively turns your TV into a smart display (a bit like iOS 17’s new StandBy Mode) or a piece of art, thanks to its free digital paintings. Amazon is also promising the ability to create AI-generated art, which will roll out in the US “by the end of this year.”

8. Amazon Fire TV Soundbar

Amazon Fire TV Soundbar on a wooden table under a TV

  • $119.99 (around £97 / AU$185)
  • Available to order now in the US (no word on UK / Australian release)

This one was a slight surprise – Amazon’s new Fire TV Soundbar is an incredibly cheap new option for anyone who wants to give their TV (from 32in to 50in in size) a healthy audio boost for not much cash.

As you’d expect for the money, it’s a pretty simple affair with two drivers and a 40W output, It also supports both Dolby and DTS audio formats and connects to your TV over HDMI ARC or optical, with Bluetooth on hand for music streaming.

So what’s the catch? It obviously won’t rival the best soundbars for audio quality and we reckon it’s a shame Amazon didn’t go fully wireless, considering it’s designed to work so well with Fire TV devices. Still, it’s definitely one to look out for in this year’s Black Friday deals.

Security and smart home

9. Ring Stick Up Cam Pro

The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro security camera mounted on a wall

  • Battery version: $180 / £160 (around AU$280)
  • Solar version: $210 / £180 (around AU$325)
  • Available for pre-order now, shipping on October 18

Amazon bought Ring back in 2018 and the latest of the company’s security cameras to get an upgrade is the versatile Ring Stick Up Cam, which now has a Pro sibling.

The Stick Up Cam range can be used indoors or outdoors. But because most people mount them outside, Ring decided to launch this Pro version with radar-powered 3D Motion Detection (the same kind you get on the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2).

That means you can pick specific zones for it to watch over with its 1080p HDR camera, and the Stick Up Cam Pro also offers two-way talk, dual-band Wi-Fi and color night vision. A promising new contender for the title of best home security camera.

  • Blink Outdoor 4: $119.99
  • Blink Sync Module Pro: $49.99 (available early next year)
  • Blink Outdoor 4 Floodlight Camera: $159.99 (ships October 17)
  • Blink Outdoor 4 Battery Extension Pack: $29.99 (ships October 17)

Amazon’s range of Blink security cameras have long been affordable alternatives to their Ring rivals – and now its flagship battery-powered model, the Outdoor 4, has just been given a range of new accessories.

The Outdoor 4 itself launched in August as the latest model in what Blink says is its best-selling camera line. But now it’s been given three new accessories to boost its powers. The Blink Sync Module Pro boosts its outdoor range, while the Blink Outdoor 4 Floodlight Camera is a wireless, HD floodlight cam.

Lastly, the Battery Extension Pack gives you even more battery life, although the Outdoor 4 is also renowned for its two-year battery life (from only two AA batteries).

11. Amazon Echo Hub

  • $179.99 / £169.99 (around AU$275)
  • No launch date yet, but later in 2023

The Echo Hub might just be the highlight of Amazon’s September 2023 launch event – particularly if you’ve been pining for a wall-mounted tablet that can control your smart home in a slightly sci-fi fashion.

A bit like a slimmed down Echo Show, this 8in touchscreen device can connect to pretty much every piece of smart home tech thanks to its support for Zigbee, Sidewalk, Thread, Bluetooth and Matter.

That means the Amazon Echo Hub can effectively be your home dashboard, letting you view multiple live camera feeds simultaneously and, next year, serving up the very promising ‘Map View’, which is a simple visual way to see all of your smart home tech (it certainly beats the usual list).

Like the Echo Show 8, the Echo Hub also offers ‘Adaptive Content’ so that it can adjust what it shows based on how close you are to the screen. We can’t wait to try this one out ahead of its full launch later this year.

12. eero Max 7

  • One-pack: $599.99 / £599.99 / AU$599.99
  • Two-pack: $1,149.99 / £1149.99 / AU$1149.99
  • Three-pack: $1,699.99 / £1699.99 / AU$1699.99
  • Available to pre-order now

If you need an extremely high-end router with Wi-Fi 7 speeds, then the new Eero Max 7 could be your new networking powerhouse.

You can tell the Max 7 is a serious mesh router because it offers no less than four Ethernet ports (two 10GB ports, and two 2.5GB ports). It can also act as your smart home hub thanks to support for the likes of Matter, Zigbee and Thread.

With support for three wireless bands (2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz) and the ability to cover 2,500 square feet with only one router (or three times that with the three pack), this is a future-proofed option for those with massive homes.

Alexa

13. Alexa AI

Amazon Devices and Services Event 2023

Tying all of Amazon’s launches together was the announcement that its Alexa voice assistant will be getting a big AI-powered upgrade, powered by the tech giant’s new large language model (LLM). Yes, Alexa is finally getting some ChatGPT-style smarts.

Amazon says Alexa AI will be “more intuitive, intelligent, and useful” and also less robotic, allowing you to have more natural conversations. It’ll also be able to handle multiple smart home requests (for certain devices) simultaneously, rather than you having to laboriously ask it each one in turn.

Thanks to some new skills, courtesy of tools like Character.AI, you’ll also apparently be able to have conversations with historical characters and more. The downside? The new AI-powered Alexa will only be launching as a preview in the US initially and we don’t know exactly when that’ll be yet. But we’ll definitely be among the first in the queue to try it out, so keep your eyes-peeled for our first impressions soon.

“New Girl” and “Spider-Verse” star Jake Johnson might be handing out free advice on his new podcast, but if he starts rattling off tips to you in a bar, be careful — there’s a doppelganger on the loose.

Johnson posted on Instagram Thursday, sharing a DM he received from a fan with the social media handle Iona Grace, who thanked him for “all the advice” and said they looked forward to seeing him at “Rainfest.” When Johnson didn’t know what that was, the jig was up.

“Did we not meet you in Edinburgh?” Iona asked. “No,” Johnson succinctly replied.

Iona then sent over a photo with the imitator, saying it was “so disappointing” and that they were “convinced the whole night.”

What kind of advice did “Fake Jake — as Johnson dubbed him in a subsequent Instagram story — give? “Just so much about life!”

You can see the whole hilarious exchange in the post below.

But the story’s not done unfolding yet, because Johnson hopes to have both parties join him on his podcast.

“There’s apparently a fake me giving life advice in bars,” Johnson said in the post “The only bad advice I give is on my podcast ‘We’re Here To Help’. I’m gonna try and have Iona on [the] podcast to hear what advice fake Jake gave. Also whoever this guy is, you should come on too. Let’s hear what was said.”

Comments from former co-stars, friends and fans immediately flooded in, including his “New Girl” co-star and recent podcast guest Zooey Deschanel who said, “I love this so much.”

“‘Just so much about life’” ? I need to know,” “Yellowjackets” star Melanie Lynskey replied.

“This is my favorite instagram content maybe ever!” “Schitt’s Creek” star Emily Hamshire said.

The comments were also rife with “New Girl” references, though fans can’t seem to agree on which alt-Nick character to blame. “Was he a Nutmeg Wholesaler by any chance?” asked one commenter. “Gotta be future Nick,” said one. “That’s Julius Pepperwood,” replied another.

We may never know who “Fake Jake” really is, but if you want to hear the real Jake Johnson give advice, you can listen to his podcast “We’re Here to Help” with co-host Gareth Reynolds.

Several minutes after Gleason’s blessed solo, for instance, “Last Word” wanders into a repetitious wash of electric jazz, as if Baroness didn’t know where else to go. These individual pieces are interesting enough, sure; note for note, Baroness remain one of the most remarkable and capable bands at the intersection of heavy metal, hard rock, and psychedelia. But this is Baroness as disjointed prog, their songs now composed of rusting spare parts that don’t work together. “Anodyne” is a pouncing rock song, its four-on-the-floor march boosting a tremendous Baizley hook. As it dips and dives into assorted breakdowns, bridges, and solos, however, Baroness never capitalize on their own might, never overwhelm or even exhilarate. Then it just stops, as if both tape and ideas simply ran out.

Baroness do try a few novel sounds, but they don’t fare much better. Early on, they devote a quarter of the album to a three-song suite that may be the nadir of their career. A ringer for an overly fussy Clutch jam, “Beneath the Rose” slams into “Choir,” a laughable spoken-word tale about Satan’s mistress murmured above an elementary Motorik improvisation. The triptych ends, mercifully, with a minute-long folk farewell that might have made a lo-fi Shrimper Records mixtape in an off year. You can almost picture Baroness in their Appalachian Airbnb, throwing things at the wall just to pretend they stuck.

The songs get stronger toward the end. With its forlorn acoustic preamble slowly yielding to shout-out-loud aplomb, “Magnolia” summons a frail body slipping into extravagantly engraved armor, formidable but delicate in the way Baroness’ best songs have always been. “Under the Wheel,” written by bassist Nick Jost, takes a similar dynamic path from somber to stomping. But its textures—crosshatched dissonance, fluttering falsetto, preening basslines—feel fresh for Baroness.

Even the acoustic closer, “Bloom,” is a corrective for the six-string bauble that begins Stone, a placeholder that even Baizley admits was little more than a mood-setter. “I lost my scepter/I lost my wings,” Baizley and Gleason coo in this sweet little country hymn of mortal homecoming. “Leave me a simple life.” By the time a gentle noise collage marks its end, Stone feels like you’ve sat through a half-hour mixtape of Baroness’ past flotsam just to arrive, possibly, at a 15-minute suggestion of its future.

Baizley often contemplates oblivion and the end during Stone, with bells tolling and suns setting and pyres burning. But near the close of “Under the Wheel,” the album’s clear winner, he sings, “So take the best of us/And burn the rest,” stretching the syllables into an unexpected hook that feels optimistic, as if he looks forward to the serotiny that can come with fire. There is at least a hint of hopeful concession there, of rising above some temporary station by recognizing something’s got to change. Now they just have to set flame to the pieces of the past they no longer need.

Several minutes after Gleason’s blessed solo, for

The opening of “Paul Robeson: ‘I’m a Negro. I’m an American.’” offers an unintentional caveat about the 1989 documentary directed by the East German filmmaker Kurt Tetzlaff. Paul Robeson’s rich baritone undergirds archival footage of Black children playing in a dusty open space, smokestacks in the background. The use by the director of a Negro spiritual, however beautiful, swaps whatever joy these kids might have been experiencing (they are at play after all) for a questionable sentimentality around Black life and suffering.

But then much of Tetzlaff’s documentary, recently restored and receiving its first theatrical run in New York, casts an aura — admiring and melancholy — around Robeson to the detriment of a more shaded portrait. The athlete-performer-activist’s achievements are well known (gridiron great, Columbia University Law graduate, first Black Othello on Broadway), but in this film, their roots and meaning go mostly unexplored.

The documentary shows glimmers of promise when featuring interviewees who had an intimate grasp of the America that shaped but also tore down Robeson. Harry Belafonte turns teary talking about Robeson’s grace. The singer Pete Seeger’s account of white rioters attacking attendees at a Peekskill, N.Y., concert in support of workers in 1949 remains chilling. Tetzlaff aims to dive into Robeson’s mistreatment by the United States government for his activism, as well as his expressed admiration of the Soviet Union and its people — but the movie sticks to the shallow end.

Hinted at, but never fully realized here, is a more compelling film about the tantalizing promise Black progressives like Robeson held for Eastern Bloc citizens, like the director.

Three members of the hit K-pop group Stray Kids were involved in a car accident Wednesday, according to an announcement from the group’s agency. There were no serious injuries but the members — Lee Know, Hyunjin and Seungmin — have been advised to cancel or postpone forthcoming work “for the time being.”

Thus, the full eight-member Stray Kids lineup will not take part in their scheduled performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York on Saturday, but 3Racha — a side project involving Stray Kids members Bang Chan, Changbin and Han operating under the names CB97, SpearB and J.One — will fill that slot. Also performing at Global Citizen are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lauryn Hill, BTS member Jung Kook, Anitta, Conan Gray, D-Nice and Sofia Carson (Megan Thee Stallion was originally scheduled but canceled).

“While returning to their dorms after a schedule on September 20th (Wednesday), the vehicle carrying Stray Kids members Lee Know, Hyunjin, and Seungmin was involved in a minor collision,” the agency, JYPE, explained in a statement.

“After the minor collision, Lee Know, Hyunjin, and Seungmin immediately visited a hospital and received thorough medical examination. None of the members and accompanying staff in the vehicle were seriously injured, but as they have sustained mild muscle pain and bruises, medical professionals have advised that they receive conservative treatment for the time being.

“We apologize for causing fans to worry with such sudden news,” the statement concludes. “JYPE will place the artists’ health as the highest priority and will provide everything we can to support their recovery. Thank you.”

In June, the group scored its third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with “5 Star,”  following “Maxident” and “Oddinary,” both of which were released last year.

When The Marvels hits theaters this November, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) newest superhero team will have its work cut out for them.

Yesterday, The Walt Disney Company revealed that it spent more than $270 million making the Captain Marvel sequel, an astounding number even by Marvel standards.

Because The Marvels was shot primarily in London, Disney received a $55 million subsidy from the government of the United Kingdom. This brought The Marvels‘ budget down to a more reasonable $219.8 million.

Disney’s Uneven Box Office Results

With a budget of that size, The Marvels will need to gross at least $439.6 million at the box office to break even. While The Marvels should be able to pass that threshold, Disney has had uneven results at the box office this year.

The Marvels

While films like Elemental and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 were big successes for Disney, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, and Haunted Mansion struggled mightily.

Marvel’s Newest Superhero Team

The Marvels will see Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau team up to form the MCU’s newest superhero team. When the three heroes find their powers have been intertwined, they must figure out a way to work together to stop another intergalactic threat.

The film was helmed by Nia DaCosta, The Candyman director who has talked openly about her love of Marvel comics.

Summary

  • Mark Wahlberg reflects on his initial reluctance to star in Boogie Nights due to concerns about being exploited.
  • Wahlberg discusses how his career as a producer allowed him to take control of his own destiny in Hollywood.
  • The Transformers star reveals that he may not continue acting at the same pace, as he plans to focus on other business ventures and spend more time with his family.

In a new interview with Cigar Aficionado (via The Hollywood Reporter), star Mark Wahlberg discussed his career in Hollywood and reflected on his initial reluctance to star in the 1997 classic Boogie Nights due to concerns about potentially being exploited.

The drama film Boogie Nights was directed and written by Paul Thomas Anderson. In addition to Wahlberg, the film also features Luis Guzman, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, Rico Bueno, John C. Reilly, Nicole Ari Parker, Heather Graham, William H. Macy, Don Cheadle, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Boogie Nights takes place in the San Fernando Valley in 1977 and follows teenager Eddie Adams (played by Wahlberg) whose life takes a drastic turn after he’s discovered by porn director Jack Horner (played by Reynolds) and becomes the adult-film star known as Dirk Diggler.

While chatting with the outlet, the Uncharted star opened up about his long-standing career in entertainment and revealed how working as a producer helped Wahlberg branch out. Wahlberg stated:

“I started becoming a producer out of necessity. I didn’t want to sit around waiting for Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise or whoever was already established before me and were the guys at the time, and Leo [DiCaprio] to go and pass on a movie until I could get my hands on it.I was always proactive in trying to find material and things that I could produce, that I knew was right for me, create my own destiny.”

Mark Wahlberg Said He Initially Had Concerns About Potentially Being Exploited

New Line Cinema

Still, while the actor’s drive to stay engaged in the industry has earned him plenty of work, Wahlberg noted that when it came to acting, he didn’t simply take any project offered to him. Wahlberg revealed that he was actually initially reluctant to star in Boogie Nights due to concerns regarding exploitation. He said:

“When I first heard about the film, the subject matter was not appealing to me. I came from the whole Marky Mark thing, pulling down my pants, Calvin Klein underwear — I didn’t know if this was just the next level of exploiting me, and now, all of a sudden, we have to lose the underwear.”

The Pain & Gain star went on to say, “My agents kept pushing me. So I read the first 25, 30 pages, and I kind of put it down. I was like, this could be something great, or this could be absolutely terrible.”

During the interview, the star additionally discussed his plans for the future, telling the outlet, “Well, I’m certainly working harder now than ever. Certain businesses, you kind of build them, pass them on, or you exit. Hopefully, my kids, we’ll see what their interests are, but I don’t think that I’ll be acting that much longer at the pace I am now. That’s for sure. Because that’s the most difficult thing.”

Boogie Nights is currently available to stream on Hulu with a premium subscription.

Originally released in 2020 to mixed reviews, Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a major overhaul on September 21, 2023, with Update 2.0. The major patch promises to overhaul substantial features such as perks and skills and AI and vehicle combat while also bringing fresh content such as side quests, weapons, and a new district.

According to Cyberpunk 2077’s Senior Community Manager, Amelia “Lilayah,” Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 will come out “close to the end” of CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 REDStreams broadcast on September 21. The stream starts at 4 PM CEST (7 AM PT / 10 AM ET).

In reply to a fan on Twitter asking what time the patch will be released, Lilayah replied, “We’re aiming to release the update close to the end of the stream.”

Previous REDStreams broadcasts have lasted anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours in length, so based on that, we expect Update 2.0 to drop around 5 PM CEST / 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET. Note that this isn’t concrete, it all depends on how long the stream lasts.

Before this, CD Projekt RED hadn’t been too clear on exactly when Update 2.0 would be dropping, leaving it up to fans to guess. A popular theory was that it would be released at the same time as the Phantom Liberty DLC, which is set for 4 PM PT on PC on September 25 and 12 AM PT on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on September 26.

When an actor finds themselves in the unfortunate position of helming a flop, they have a few options for how to proceed. There’s the “blame stuff happening behind the scenes at the studio” route, popularized by Dwayne Johnson in relation to his beloved, sequel-less Black Adam. There are the “blame the marketing team,” “blame the audience’s taste,” and, ironically, “blame Dwayne Johnson” routes, somehow all taken by Zachary Levi in his many attempts to defend the honor of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Thankfully, Chris Evans has finally uncovered another way.

This may come as a shock, but it’s actually quite possible for actors to just shrug their shoulders and say their movie honestly wasn’t that good. Snipers from Apple TV+ don’t seem to have shown up to take Evans out for saying it about Ghosted, anyway.

“Ghosted to me felt like a movie that I grew up on, a movie that maybe we don’t see very much anymore. And the question is whether or not audiences have outgrown those types of films,” the actor said in a recent GQ profile when asked to address the ill-reviewed action flick. In it, he stars as a love-struck man who finds out his date (Ana de Armas) is actually a secret agent.

Evans questioned the audience’s interest in the genre film “both” going into it and coming out of it, he said. “I didn’t think audiences had outgrown it prior, and I still don’t think they have, despite the fact, I mean, technically I think we did okay on, in terms of viewership,” he clarified.

“Critics didn’t like it,” Evans continued, something he considers “more the fault of the movie as opposed to the appetite of the audience. I think the appetite’s there, if it’s done properly. We could have been better.”

Luckily, Evans has higher hopes for both of his upcoming films: Pain Hustlers and Red One, the latter of which also stars none other than Dwayne Johnson. In Pain Hustlers, which details the rise of an extra-skeevy opioid company, Evans gets to play a “real character,” which is exciting for him. As for Red Ones? “I’ve just been looking for a Christmas movie my whole career,” he said. Even if this one does flop as hard as Ghosted, nothing can take away from the realization of this beautiful dream.

Summary

  • Quentin Tarantino has explained that the contents of Marsellus Wallace’s briefcase in Pulp Fiction are meant to be a MacGuffin, leaving it up to the viewers’ imagination.
  • The novel adaptation of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood confirms that Cliff Booth did indeed kill his wife, offering graphic details of the event.
  • While the fate of Mr. Blue in Reservoir Dogs was left undisclosed in the original movie, the video game based on the film reveals that he escaped the jewelry store robbery but was later found and shot by the police.

Although Quentin Tarantino tells complete stories in his movies, he has also left a couple of mysteries that won’t be solved in sequels – luckily, Tarantino has already solved a couple in interviews and extended media. Tarantino’s career as a filmmaker officially began in 1992 with the crime movie Reservoir Dogs, which gave the audience a good idea of what his narrative and visual style are about. Tarantino’s big break arrived two years later with Pulp Fiction, often considered his masterpiece, and since then, Tarantino has explored a variety of genres in his movies.

Tarantino has paid a visit to the world of martial arts with his Kill Bill duology, Western with Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight, and even alternate versions of historical events, as he did with Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Some of Tarantino’s movies have left a couple of unanswered questions that might never be solved as he’s known for not making sequels, but some of those mysteries have already been solved, whether in extended media or by Tarantino in different interviews – and here are those mysteries.

6 The Contents Of Pulp Fiction’s Briefcase

Pulp Fiction’s biggest mystery is what exactly was inside Marsellus Wallace’s briefcase. The first segment in Pulp Fiction saw hitmen Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta) arriving at the apartment of one of Marsellus’ business partners, Brett, to retrieve a briefcase. When Vincent opened it to check that it had what they were looking for, he was mesmerized by whatever was inside, which radiated a bright orange light. In the final segment of Pulp Fiction, the briefcase was opened again when Jules showed the contents to Pumpkin (Tim Roth), who was also instantly fascinated by them.

The contents of the briefcase were never shown in Pulp Fiction, making way for a variety of theories on what’s inside, but Tarantino has already given an explanation. Tarantino has said there’s no explanation behind the contents of the briefcase because it was written to be a MacGuffin (a plot device) (Tarantino A to Zed: The Films of Quentin Tarantino, via Snopes). Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avery has shared that, originally, the briefcase contained diamonds, but as that was “too boring and predictable”, they decided that the contents would never be shown so viewers could fill in the blank “with their own ultimate contents” (via Questions for the Movie Answer Man).

Of course, this hasn’t been a satisfying explanation for some viewers, who continue coming up with theories on what was inside the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. Some theories suggest the briefcase contains the diamonds from the Reservoir Dogs heist, Marsellus’ soul, or even that it contains God.

5 What Truly Happened To Cliff Booth’s Wife Before Once Upon a Time In Hollywood

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Cliff boat

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood introduced actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stuntman and best friend Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). The latter had been facing rejection in the film industry as he was rumored to have killed his wife, and Tarantino made sure to leave the audience wondering if he truly did it. In a flashback scene, Booth was in a boat with his wife, Billie (Rebecca Gayheart), who was complaining about the boat, the weather, and Cliff, calling him a loser. Billie tried to start an argument with Cliff, who was sitting in front of her with a beer in one hand and a harpoon gun on his lap, pointing directly at her.

The scene ended as Billie continued to argue and Cliff simply stared at her, and it’s never mentioned if he truly killed her or not – however, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood novel answered this question. Also written by Tarantino, the novel confirms that Cliff Booth killed his wife, and offers some graphic details (after all, it’s a Tarantino story). Cliff shot Billie “a little below the belly button, tearing her in half, both pieces hitting the deck of the boat with a splash”. Cliff regretted it from the moment he fired, and rushed to Billie’s side, trying to hold her body together until help arrived.

The novel also explains that Cliff didn’t shoot her just because, as he had despised her for a long time, and her complaints and insults when they were on the boat were the last straw for him. The novel adds that, once Cliff shot his wife, it was like “years of ill will and resentment evaporated in an instant”, but it didn’t explain how he got away with it.

4 Mr. Blue’s Fate In Reservoir Dogs

Cafe scene in Reservoir Dogs

Reservoir Dogs saw a group of thieves, all with code names based on different colors, whose heist of a jewelry store goes terribly wrong. The movie spends most of its time with Mr. White (Harvey Keitel) and Mr. Orange (Tim Roth), with Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) and Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi) also being important parts of the story, but two characters were only seen in the first minutes of Reservoir Dogs: Mr. Brown (Tarantino) and Mr. Blue (Edward Bunker). Mr. Brown was shot in the head by a cop but survived long enough to drive the getaway car with White and an injured Orange, eventually dying in the car, but Mr. Blue wasn’t seen again.

Later on in Reservoir Dogs, the group’s boss, Joe Cabot (Lawrence Tierney), arrived at the warehouse with news that Mr. Blue was killed by cops, but it was unclear exactly what happened to him after the robbery. In 2006, a videogame based on Reservoir Dogs was released, and it followed the same plot as the movie, expanding it by showing some events that didn’t make it to the movie. One of those was the fate of Mr. Blue, who escaped from the jewelry store and hid in a movie theater, where he was found and shot by the police.

3 Hans Landa’s Life After Being Marked At The End of Inglourious Basterds

Inglourious Basterds ending Aldo Utivich

Inglourious Basterds presented an alternate version of World War II, where a group named the Basterds captured Nazis, scalped them, and those they allowed to live got a swastika carved into their foreheads. Although the main purpose of the Basterds and Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent) was to kill Hitler and as many nazis as possible, they also wanted to take SS officer Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) down. Basterds’ leader Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) and member Utivich (B.J. Novak) finally got their revenge on Landa at the end of Inglourious Basterds, where they carved a swastika on Landa’s forehead, which Aldo believed to be his “masterpiece”.

It’s understood that Aldo and Utivich let Landa go after carving his forehead, but nothing beyond that is explored or mentioned in Inglourious Basterds. Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2020, Tarantino shared what he images happened to Hans Landa after the ending of Inglourious Basterds, starting with Landa being recognized as a hero in history books for his involvement in ending World War II, as “he and Aldo Raine brought down Hitler”. Years later, Landa settled on Nantucket Island, where he started a new career as an amateur master detective, and he had to wear low bangs to cover the swastika on his forehead.

2 Rick Dalton’s Career After Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Leonardo DiCaprio as Rick Dalton

Cliff Booth wasn’t the only one struggling with his career in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as Rick Dalton’s acting career was also in decline. After facing Charles Manson’s followers, who attempted to kill Rick and Cliff, Rick Dalton was last seen at the end of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood talking to Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and Jay Sebring (Emile Hirsch), who invited him over for a drink. The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood novel revealed that, after the movie’s ending, Rick earned newfound fame as a regular on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and before the novel was published, Tarantino shared in an interview with The Wrap that Rick found more success in film after the events of the movie, and also got bigger guest roles in TV series.

Other details about Rick Dalton’s career post-Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are his turn into a straight-to-video action star in the 1980s (via The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith), and in 1988, he retired from acting and moved to Hawaii with his wife, Francesca Capucci (Lorenza Izzo), even meeting Tarantino at the 1996 Hawaii International Film Festival (via ReelBlend). Rick Dalton passed away in May 2023, at the age of 90.

1 Did The Bride Kill Elle Driver In Kill Bill: Volume 2?

Uma Thurman's Bride and Daryl Hannah's Ell Drive in Kill Bill 2

Kill Bill: Volume 2 continued The Bride’s (Uma Thurman) revenge mission against Bill and the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, and one of her targets was Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah). After an intense fight at Budd’s (Madsen) trailer, The Bride won after plucking out Elle’s remaining eye. The Bride left Elle screaming in pain in the trailer, but as the black mamba Elle used to kill Budd was still there, her fate was left ambiguous.

The mystery grew after the end credits of Kill Bill: Volume 2 drew a question mark over Daryl Hanna’s name, but Tarantino has already answered this big question. Speaking on the Joe Rogan podcast in 2021 (via The Playlist), Quentin Tarantino said that “Elle Driver is still out there” while talking about Kill Bill 3, thus confirming that she survived.

Summary Quentin Tarantino has explained that

The Writers Guild and the AMPTP headed back to the negotiating table today, and they are currently joined by top CEOs from the AMPTP member companies.

Disney’s Bob Iger, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, and Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav are all present at AMPTP headquarters for the meeting that started at 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday, IndieWire has confirmed. With the strike nearing the longest in the guild’s history, it’s pushed the studio CEOs to be more hands-on in negotiations and suggests greater urgency in this latest round of talks.

The CEOs did a prep Zoom call ahead of the meeting and have also cleared their schedules in preparation for what could be a long night, although that depends on talks going well.

The last time the studio CEOs met with WGA leadership, things didn’t go so well. The WGA previously disclosed that Iger, Langley, Sarandos, and Zaslav all met with the negotiating committee on August 22. Several sources IndieWire has previously spoken with suggested that if the studio CEOs went to meet directly with WGA leadership, they did so with the expectation that a deal would get done.

That didn’t happen. Instead, the AMPTP publicly released the details of its proposal made on Aug. 11, prompting the WGA to say that it was riddled with loopholes and was simply “not good enough,” as well as say they were met with a lecture by the CEOs about how significant the offer was. That stalemate lasted for weeks, but finally ended today.

The WGA recently told members that with talks resuming to expect not to hear from them for some time while negotiations are taking place. The AMPTP has said that it is committed to finding a resolution to end the strikes.

THR first reported the news. The WGA and the AMPTP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The meteoric rise and fall of legendary filmmaker Orsen Welles is fascinating in and of itself, but what happens when you tie it together with historic people such as President Franklin Delanor Roosevelt (FDR) and events such as The Great Depression and World War Two? That’s what filmmaker Danny Wu interestingly does with the documentary American: An Odyssey to 1947.

Most people are aware that Welles directed the masterpiece that is Citizen Kane and have heard about his infamous War of the Worlds radio broadcast that shocked the Nation into believing an alien invasion was upon us. Still, I was unaware of just how vital FDR was in getting Orsen’s career off the ground until this film. Roosevelt pumped up arts and theater programs around the country with grant money as a way to lift that sector up out of the Great Depression, and Welles was a major beneficiary of that. Orsen Welles cut his teeth on his Mercury theater productions with that money, and the rest, they say, is history.

When FDR died, Welles went into self-exile by leaving the country because of the open investigations on him being a supposed communist during the House of Un-American Activities Committee witch hunt era. Another central figure in the film and in Orsen’s career was, of course, media mogul William Randolph Hearst, on whom Citizen Kane is unflatteringly based. I also did not know that Hearst was an integral figure in getting FDR elected before they had a falling out.

“…a nostalgic and vital snapshot of America…”

I enjoyed how Wu’s documentary weaves these connections together, and others such as Japanese internment camps (a lowlight in FDR’s presidency) and Isaac Woodard, a man whom Welles helped to get justice for by using his radio show to find the South Carolina police officer who blinded Woodard for the crime of being African American.

It’s also fascinating to watch how much Hearst shaped the political landscape in his day, the way certain influential people do today, which is a reminder that people with power and money have been shaping our world for longer than we may think. It’s also a cautionary tale that people who expose these types of things, such as Welles, may not always have a happy ending.

American: An Odyssey to 1947 is a nostalgic and vital snapshot of America through the lens of central and intertwined figures and events. As a film and history buff, this movie is right up my alley. It’s something that everyone should see, though, to get a better understanding of American history, told in an insightful and entertaining way.

Danny Wu makes use of some fantastic archival footage so that we can get a more authentic sense of what the era of 1947 was like, as opposed to only “talking head” interviews that many documentaries are known for. The talking heads that are utilized here are insightful, such as Laura Williams, the great-niece of Isaac Woodard, and Orsen Welles himself through archival footage.

Whether you enjoy film or history, American: An Odyssey to 1947 has something for you to learn and be astonished by.

  • A friend of the Polish priest keeled over after taking several potency tablets
  • He refused to let paramedics in after a male prostitute he was with called them

A priest who ordered a male prostitute and then called an ambulance after his friend collapsed from an overdose of erectile dysfunction pills is being investigated by prosecutors.

According to local media, Father Tomasz Zmarzły from the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Angels in Poland had allegedly thrown a small party at his apartment in the city of Dąbrowa Górnicza.

But after taking copious amounts of potency tablets, in the early hours of the morning his naked friend keeled over.

The male prostitute is then said to have called the emergency services at which point the priest was said to have ordered him to leave.

When paramedics arrived they found the prostitute waiting outside the apartment but Father Zmarzły allegedly refused to let them in.

They then reportedly called the police who were eventually allowed inside where they found the priest’s friend lying on the floor unconscious.

He was taken to hospital where he later recovered and discharged himself.

A source close to the incident told the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza: ‘The event was organised by clergy and was purely sexual.

‘Its participants took potency pills.’

Informing his superior about the incident the following day, Father Zmarzły denied that he had organised a ‘gay orgy’.

The Bishop of Sosnowiec which oversees the disgraced priest’s parish said he had appointed a commission ‘to urgently explain the circumstances of the situation.’

Meanwhile, prosecutors have now launched their own investigation into the priest for failing to help his friend.

Deputy district prosecutor Czesław Kurpiś said: ‘The local prosecutor’s office is conducting proceedings regarding failure to provide assistance to a person whose life is at risk.

Established in 1901, the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Angels in Dąbrowa Górnicza was the first church in Poland to receive the title of basilica which was given by Pope Leo XIII.

As talks resumed on Wednesday morning between Hollywood studios and the Writers Guild of America, members of the guild on the picket lines were “guardedly optimistic” about a resolution to the strike, now in its fifth month. And to emphasize the importance of these new negotiations, Hollywood CEOs — including Disney’s Bob Iger, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav and Universal’s Donna Langley — appeared at the meeting between the AMPTP and WGA, multiple individuals with knowledge of the meeting told TheWrap.

“I always like it better when they’re talking,” one WGA member told TheWrap on the picket line outside Amazon. “It is still important to be out here, got to keep doing our thing, but it is better to talk than not to talk.”

Both sides are trying once again to reach a deal for a new contract nearly a month after a heated meeting between guild leaders and the AMPTP. The presence of top studio brass underlines the urgency of making a deal. TheWrap exclusively reported that showrunners had an emotional meeting with the WGA negotiating committee on Monday in which they stressed the crippling financial situation many are suffering through.

Regardless of frayed nerves throughout the industry ahead of Wednesday’s meeting, “Family Guy” executive producer Patrick Meighan said he remains resolute until a fair deal is done.

“The vibe is the same it has been for the last 142 days,” Meighan said. “We are united and we are determined to keep doing this till we get a fair contract.”

Another WGA member TheWrap spoke to said he’s happy that both sides are at least communicating, but wouldn’t be surprised if nothing comes out of the latest round of meetings.

“I always feel more optimistic when they’re communicating with each other but at the same time, it’s Charlie Brown with the football. You don’t want to get your hopes up.”

The central question hovering over this round of discussions is the extent to which each party is prepared to make concessions, given the mounting pressure to reach a resolution.

Recently, certain showrunners have voiced significant concerns to the WGA leadership regarding the economic stability of both the writers and crew members involved in their productions, emphasizing the need for progress in reaching a deal.

The WGA strike has endured for 142 days and is just two weeks shy of surpassing the 1988 writers’ strike, becoming the lengthiest strike in the history of the entertainment industry. And of course, once a deal is reached with the WGA, the AMPTP has to turn its attention to SAG-AFTRA which has been on strike for over two months.

John Grisham, George R.R. Martin, Jodi Picoult, Elin Hilderbrand and other prominent fiction writers joined the Authors Guild in filing a class action lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the technology is encroaching on the industry.

The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, accused the AI company of infringing on authors’ copyrights by using their work to train its chatbot, ChatGPT. The Authors Guild claimed that the chatbot has the ability to generate “derivative works” that mimic style and summarize the content without fair compensation or even being notified. The suit argues that ChatGPT is harming the market for authors’ work.

In the complaint, the Authors Guild said, “The success and profitability of OpenAI are predicated on mass copyright infringement without a word of permission from or a nickel of compensation to copyright owners.”

“Plaintiffs and other professional writers are thus reasonably concerned about the risks OpenAI’s conduct poses to their livelihoods specifically and the literary arts generally,” continued the complaint.

“Generative AI is a vast new field for Silicon Valley’s longstanding exploitation of content providers. Authors should have the right to decide when their works are used to ‘train’ AI. If they choose to opt in, they should be appropriately compensated,” author Jonathan Franzen said in a statement.

Other plaintiffs involved in the lawsuit include Sylvia Day, David Baldacci, Mary Bly, Christina Baker Kline, Victor LaValle, Maya Shanbhag Lang, Douglas Preston, Roxana Robinson, George Saunders, Scott Turow and Rachel Vail.

The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and is seeking class certification, to prohibit their literary works from being used in the company’s “large language models” without authorization.

The Authors Guild lawsuit is the latest in a series of litigation over AI and its implementation.

18 Of The Best British TV Shows

Coming off the highs of Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has some big shoes to fill for MCU fans.

Avengers 5 was first announced as a part of Marvel Studios’ now-famous San Diego Comic-Con 2022 panel, where the studio revealed its plans for the next more than half-decade on the big screen.

The Kang Dynasty gets its name from the comic book storyline of the same name, being a part of the Avengers double-bill of this movie and Avengers: Secret Wars.

So here is everything we know about the super-powered team-up.

Avengers 5 Release: When Will It Come Out?

Marvel

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently slated to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.

This comes after the movie was originally given a release date of May 2, 2025 but was ultimately delayed alongside a series of changes for Marvel’s overall slate.

Development on the project has come to a halt as the writers of Hollywood have had to put their pens down and close their laptops due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania scribe Jeff Loveness is currently writing Avengers 5 with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton set to direct.

Marvel’s faith in Loveness has reportedly been questioned as of late, however, with some insiders claiming they have heard the writer was pulled off the project.

That has not been confirmed by Marvel Studios, but given the mixed reception to Loveness’ last MCU effort, Quantumania, it would not be all that surprising.

Given these rumors – and the ongoing strikes in Hollywood – The Kang Dynasty‘s release date remains in a state of flux.

Even though the studio already delayed it a year, release dates across Hollywood are fluid, meaning Avengers 5 could get punted even further if work on the film cannot start any time soon.

Who Is Cast in Avengers 5?

Marvel

Currently, only one actor has been confirmed to appear in Avengers 5.

Seeing as his name is in the title, Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror will be the big bad of the upcoming Avengers film, as he sets the seeds for the Phase 6-closer in Avengers: Secret Wars.

The blockbuster has actually been described by writer Jeff Loveness as “a Kang movie:”

“That’s at least how I’m trying to write him. And, you know, we’ll see how the structure changes and how the flow works, but like, he’s got to be his own hero, and especially Kang the Conqueror and Ant-Man thought he was. Or, maybe he wouldn’t use the word ‘hero,’ but he’s on a crusade and he’s doing it for a reason. So secretly, it is a Kang movie, but, of course, you have to keep the forward gas going with the Avengers. But yeah, in the back of my mind it’s a Kang movie.”

But despite Kang’s confirmation for the film, Majors’ involvement remains up in the air. The actor is in the middle of an ongoing legal dispute, with his future in the franchise being in question.

As of June 2023, Marvel Studios was “discuss[ing] potential options going forward” (per insider Jeff Sneider):

“I’ve heard that Marvel hasn’t made any decisions regarding Jonathan Majors but they’ve met with or spoken to his agent to discuss potential options going forward.”

So depending on the findings of the court, Majors’ version of the character may not even make it into The Kang Dynasty with a recast maybe happening instead.

Other than Majors, one can assume who else will pop up in the super-powered epic. Seeing as it is an Avengers movie, Marvel’s A-team of heroes will surely be there, with the likes of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man all headlining the team.

Marvel Studios has spent the last few years seemingly introducing audiences to the next generation of MCU Avengers, so they will likely all appear in the movie as well. This list includes Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel, Hailee Steinfeld’s Hawkeye, and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, amongst new heroes yet-to-be-introduced like the Fantastic Four.

While saying how excited Loveness was to write for Pugh’s Marvel character in the Avengers film, he also let slip that “Letitia Wright” is another actor he can’t wait to see, seemingly confirming her involvement as well:

“I can’t say specifically. I think I’d get in trouble. I gotta get better at talking to the Internet. But just, characters that we like, I mean, I think we’re excited for the actors more than even the characters right now. Because, we have this really good crop of performers. We got Florence Pugh, and Jonathan Majors, and Letitia Wright. We’ve got such a deep bench of really good actors. Everyone’s gonna get their chance to shine. I can’t say who. I can’t say when they will shine. But I think we’ve got a deep bench and it’s fun to finally put everybody into the game.”

What Will Happen in Avengers 5?

Marvel

So far, Marvel Studios has remained tight-lipped about what exactly will happen in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Fans can, however, glean some information about the film based on its place on the MCU slate and its Kang-centric title.

First, Avengers 5 will serve as the first part of a supposed Multiversal duology to close out Phase 6. The film will be followed up by 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, which – if following the comic book storyline of the same name – will serve as the ultimate showdown of the Marvel Multiverse, bringing in characters from across Marvel media to take down some sort of epic threat.

With this knowledge, one can assume that The Kang Dynasty will lay the groundwork for the Multiversal sequel to follow.

Previous reports hinted at Avengers 5 breaking down Kang’s backstory with moviegoers “learn[ing] about him conquering worlds across the entire Multiverse.”

In the same way that Thanos was the principal antagonist of both Infinity War and Endgame, it seems as though Kang will be that for The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. The Avengers will have their hands full, though, as Jonathan Majors’ Marvel villain is not just one character but infinite variations of that character across reality.

There is also a comic storyline that The Kang Dynasty shares its name with, although it remains unknown just how much the film will steal from its comic book counterpart.

The Kang Dynasty (sometimes called the “Kang War”) storyline ran from June 2001 to August 2022 and saw Kang come to Earth and take over the planet for a brief time.

This could be where the MCU version of the story goes, with Kang first traveling to conquer his former home planet in a more grounded story before the Multiverse truly comes into play in Secret Wars.

How Will Avengers 5 Lead to Secret Wars?

Marvel

One of the key aspects of The Kang Dynasty is how it will set the ball for Secret Wars to spike over the net one year later.

Coming off the shocking cliffhanger of Avengers: Infinity War, where big bad Thanos snapped half the universe out of existence, Marvel Studios will have to go down a different route for its Avengers 5 to 6 baton pass.

One way The Kang Dynasty could differentiate itself from the snap of Infinity War‘s ending is by actually having the Avengers win this time.

Sure, there will have to be enough hanging thread to set up the sequel, but there is a chance Avengers 5 sees Earth’s Mightiest Heroes take down Jonathan Majors’ Kang (or, at least, they think they have).

Will Avengers 5 Be Bigger Than Endgame?

Avengers: Endgame poster, Avengers 5 logo, Mr. Fantastic, Iron Man, He Who Remains
Marvel

It may seem impossible, but Avengers 5 has the makings to be bigger than Avengers: Endgame.

While it will be a herculean task to reach the same level of box office success, the in-universe stakes will easily be bigger than Marvel Studios’ last two Avengers films.

The biggest reason that this could be bigger comes in the form of the film’s villain. Thanos proved to be a formidable foe for the Avengers, making every one of Marvel Studios’ heroes come together just to see the Mad Titan’s demise, but Jonathan Majors’ Kang is unlike anything this band of heroes has ever gone up against before.

This is a villain with seemingly endless variation across the Multiverse, all of which seem hell-bent on conquering all realities. So instead of a single blood-thirsty tyrant, now, Marvel’s super-powered team will have to go up against infinite Variants of one, likely across multiple planes of reality.

When Will Avengers 5’s Trailer Come Out?

Kang the Conqueror, Stature, Shuri's Black Panther, She-Hulk, Spider-Man, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty logo
Marvel

With Avengers 5 set to come to theaters on May 1, 2026, fans should expect a trailer for the movie roughly six months before the movie’s debut.

For Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Marvel Studios put out trailers five and four months before each movie’s release respectively.

So if The Kang Dynasty holds that May 2026 date, then audiences should be prepared for a first look sometime around January of that same year.

After waiting for five whole episodes of Ahsoka, the Star Wars galaxy’s most infamous blue man has finally arrived. That’s right, we’re talking about Grand Admiral Thrawn, played by Lars Mikkelsen. Who, of course, also voiced the character on Star Wars Rebels. The search for Thrawn has been the basic plot of Ahsoka, with former Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) searching for her former master. Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and her allies have been trying to stop Morgan from finding Thrawn and reigniting another galactic war.

Grand Admiral Thrawn Was in Exile on the Planet Peridea

As we learned from previous episodes, when young Ezra Bridger commanded the space whales called purrgil to yank Thrawn and his Star Destroyer away from Lothal into parts unknown in the finale of Rebels, they wound up in another distant galaxy. The only way to access that galaxy was with a hyperspace ring, which Morgan Elsbeth built above the planet Seatos. Via an ancient star map, Morgan discovered the exact coordinates of Thrawn’s current whereabouts: a planet called Peridea where Thrawn was in exile for a decade, since before the events of A New Hope.

Lucasfilm

Once Morgan Elsbeth, ex-Jedi Baylan Skoll, and Shin Hati arrive on Peridea, three Dathomirian Nightsisters greet them. The episode revealed Peridea is where the Nightsisters came from, long before migrating to Dathomir eons ago. And some still remain on Peridea. That’s when Thrawn’s Star Destroyer appeared above them all. Thrawn painted the Chimaera with the symbols of the Chiss, Thrawn’s people from the Unknown Regions. It also looked terribly damaged, no doubt from the purrgil who brought the ship there in the first place over a decade earlier.

Thrawn’s Star Destroyer and Stromtroopers Have Seen Better Days

When Thrawn first appeared, he was wearing his standard white Grand Admiral uniform, and didn’t look worse for wear after a decade in exile. His fleet of stormtroopers however, were much worse for wear. Red bands held the armor together, and strange gold material sealed the cracks, like kintsugi. The troopers seemed to have a cult-like devotion to their commanding officer, chanting “Thrawn! Thrawn! Thrawn!” as he walked the deck of the Chimaera to greet his rescuers. One of the stormtroopers, Enoch, seemed to be his right-hand man. This character wore a gold mask superimposed on an old stormtrooper helmet. We’re not sure if he’s a former trooper, or something else.

Although Thrawn agreed to help Sabine Wren, now a prisoner of Elsbeth, find her old friend Ezra Bridger, he claimed to not know where Ezra was. Or if he was even still alive. But he gave Sabine their last known intel on where they thought Bridger may be. However, Thrawn asked Baylan and his apprentice to kill both Sabine and Ezra once Sabine found him. But he seemed far less concerned with getting revenge on the Jedi who stranded him than with getting back home. The Mandalorian’s third season showed us the Imperial Shadow Council is patiently waiting for Thrawn to return and rebuild the Empire.

Thrawn Sees Himself as the “Heir to the Empire”

A decade in exile didn’t seem to crack Thrawn’s cold and collected demeanor. He still came across as the calculating tactical genius from Star Wars Rebels, not to mention several Timothy Zahn novels. He’s never been the kind of character to lose his cool, even in the most dire of circumstances. We’ll see if that changes when he faces off against Ahsoka Tano, who is now hot on his trail. She’s made it her mission to stop him from returning to the galaxy we know, and naming himself “Heir to the Empire.” But we have a strong feeling Thrawn isn’t going to let any Jedi stop him from achieving his goal.

In a camera industry that largely operates as a copycat market where most brands boast cameras with similar specs and designs, having some distinguishing feature or spec associated with your brand can go a long way.

For a long time it was Canon’s color science, or Sony’s sharp image. And while both those still might (arguably) be true, we have to shout out Nikon for doing such a great job of cementing itself as one of the classiest, and sleekest, design camera manufacturers in the business.

And with no camera is that more prominently displayed than this new Nikon Zf. With a retro look and classic design, this new full frame mirrorless camera really blends old world and new world technologies — all powered by a sensor on par with the brand’s latest camera counterparts like the Nikon Z6 II (a refresh itself, worth considering).

So let’s take a look at this sleek and sexy Nikon Zf and see how its video specs and features might make it a classy choice for any interested filmmakers or videographers.

Introducing the Nikon Zf

Designed for the modern-day content creators (albeit with a heavy photography-focus, at least judging from the initial marketing push), the Nikon ZF is a full frame mirrorless camera which aims to deliver high image quality and beautiful UHD 4K video recording.

With its aforementioned classic-looking and retro-styled camera body, the Zf is still able to pack pretty much all of the specs, features, bells and whistles which you’d expect to find in a modern digital photo/video camera that retails at around the $2,000 price point. (Or, if we’re being honest, we could have seen this starting at point significantly higher.)

Offering exceptional low-light imaging performance, fast and capable autofocus and an advanced 8-stop 5-axis vibration reduction system, the Nikon Zf should give content creators plenty of control options in-camera and with the 3.2” vari-angle touchscreen.

How Does the Nikon Zf Stack Up For Video?

That’s the big question here. As we mentioned, if you were to see any ads about the Nikon Zf here at launch, chances are they’re going to be focused on the photography aspects of this camera. And, truthbetold, that’s really where the Zf might shine — at least initially.

However, with a 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor and using the same processing engine used in both the Nikon Z9 and Z8, the Nikon Zf will make use of oversampled 6K video recording to offer UHD 4K at full pixel readout up to 30p, plus Full HD 1080p recording up to 120p for slow motion playback.

On top of that, Nikon has designed the Zf to provide internal recording up to 125 minutes directly to a memory card with 10-bit H.265 in SDR/HLG/N-log tone modes, along with overall fluid video performance and quick all-around handling.

There’s also some newly enhanced deep learning technology at work here which features an auto mode that can analyze your shooting situations and automatically adjust aperture, ISO and shutter speed to match your intentions. A great photo tool for now, but we’ll see where that goes for video in the future as well.

A close up of the Nikon Zf classic design.

Nikon

Price and Availability

So, before we get to specs and pricing below, we do have to consider where this camera stacks up against the market. It certainly feels like Nikon is going for a sweet spot here between their higher-end Nikon Z9 and still a step below the Z7. This camera is indeed quite similar to the Z6 II, but with its classic design and slightly different marketing, it appears that Nikon wants this to be more of a hybrid, aesthetic purchase.

And, if that’s your thing, then go for it — because the Zf certainly looks cool and should shoot beautifully.

If you are interested though, the $2,000 price point for cameras is still insanely competitive right now, so there are plenty of other options which can provide 4K/30p video just fine. But they might not be as sexy.

  • 24.5MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor
  • EXPEED 7 Image Processor
  • UHD 4K 30p Video and Full HD 120p Video
  • AF Subject Recognition with 3D Tracking
  • 5-Axis In-Body Vibration Reduction
  • Focus-Point Stabilization
  • 3.2″ Vari-Angle Touchscreen
  • 96MP High-Res Mode

The Nikon Zf will be available in mid-October 2023.

Designed for modern-day content creators, the Nikon Zf Mirrorless Camera delivers full-frame image quality and UHD 4K video recording in a classic-looking retro-styled camera body.

The Continental is a prequel series that takes place in 1975 and explores the origins of the iconic hotel previously seen in the John Wick movies. Being set in 1975 also means that well-recognized characters from the Keanu Reeves-led films will appear as much younger versions of themselves. This includes Ian McShane’s Winston (now played by Colin Woodell) and the late Lance Reddick’s Charon (now played by Ayomide Adegun). While opening up about the new actors portraying Winston and Charon in The Continental, the director stated,

“[Charon] was interesting because we did this big search as you usually do with a film, and we had this one guy that was really close. He came in three times and then the casting woman from London said, ‘Oh, I have this last person that might be… but he’s in Wales and drama school right now in his last year of drama school. He’s never been on camera.’And they show us his tape. I’m like, ‘Oh my God! He’s of Nigerian descent. His parents are from Nigeria. They live in London. So, he also knows that accent in his household, but he’s also talented. So, we yanked him out of his last year and his first scene was with Mel Gibson and Colin.”

However, The Book of Eli co-director said that when it came to casting a younger version of Winston for The Continental, the prequel’s producer Basil Iwanyk was the person that really saw something special in Woodell.

Albert Hughes Revealed That Producer Basil Iwanyk “Was a Big Champion of Colin”

Peacock

Hughes continued, “Actually, Basil was a big champion of Colin. I’ve got to give him credit for that because I saw him and I’m like, ‘Oh yes, movie stars looks.’ But I didn’t see what he saw until he showed up. And he’s a very smart actor. He also has these old throwback movie star looks. He looks similar to Ian McShane in his younger years, but he’s deeply, deeply talented and he’s thinking, he’s constantly thinking even when he’s not doing dialogue, which is important I think.”

The Alpha director added that when it came to casting the younger versions of these characters he made sure that Woodell and Adegun’s ability to portray the characters accurately was the top priority. Hughes added:

“I think it’s important that they both are similar in appearance. I think it would throw the audience if they weren’t, but that’s a superficial thing. And then you have to get to talent. You need the talent.”

The Continental premieres on Peacock on September 22nd, while the second episode releases on September 29th. The third and final episode of the prequel series will air on October 6th.

“It’s a new soundtrack,” she captioned the series of whimsical beach photos. “Here are the back covers and vault track titles for 1989 (my version) I can’t wait for this one to be out, seriously. Thank you for playing along, sleuthing, puzzling and making these reveals so much chaotic fun (which is the best kind of fun, after all ?).”

The track list features all 16 original and bonus tracks from the 2014 album, plus the previously revealed “Vault” tracks including “Is It Over Now?,” “Now That We Don’t Talk,” “Say Don’t Go” and “Suburban Legends.” In her post, Swift revealed one more “From the Vault” track titled “‘Slut!’”

Surprisingly, there are no features on the current track list, shutting down rumors of a potential collaboration with Nicki Minaj or even Harry Styles.

The reveal comes following a Google pop-up animation to honor 1989‘s upcoming release. The 89 puzzles fans were encouraged to solve to unlock the “Taylor’s Vault” tracks resulted in so much Googling that the search engine admitted it was more than the world’s leading search destination could even handle. “Swifties, the vault is jammed! But don’t worry, there are not blank spaces inside,” it tweeted Tuesday evening. “We’re in our fix-it era and will be out of the woods soon.”

Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is arriving on October 27. See the back covers and track list on Instagram here.

Woodstock Film Festival has added Tony Goldwyn’s comedy drama “Ezra,” starring Bobby Cannavale and Robert De Niro to its 2023 lineup.

In the film, which made its world premiere earlier this month at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, Cannavale stars as Max, a stand up comic who after recently blowing up his career and marriage is living with his father Stan (De Niro). When Max’s autistic son Ezra is expelled from yet another school, Max makes the controversial decision to take him on a cross-country road trip.

In addition to Cannavale and De Niro, “Ezra” stars Rose Byrne, Vera Farmiga, Whoopi Goldberg and Rainn Wilson. (Mister Smith Entertainment and CAA are handling sales.)

“I am so excited that the Woodstock Film Festival chose to screen ‘Ezra,’” says Goldwyn. “Woodstock is one of the coolest festivals in the country for a filmmaker. After such an enthusiastic reception at TIFF last week, I can’t wait to share this deeply personal film with another group of passionate film buffs.”

Additional titles recently added to WFF’s lineup include Matthew Heineman’s documentary “American Symphony,” Robert Kolodny’s “The Featherweight” and Brooke Berman’s “Ramona at Midlife”

As previously announced, the 24th edition of the fest, which runs from Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 in New York’s Hudson Valley, will kick off with Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play.” The erotic thriller about a power-hungry couple contending for power at a cutthroat financial firm, was acquired by Netflix for $20 million after debuting at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Additional WFF narrative feature titles include “I Am What You Imagine,” by Matthew Modine; Nicol Paone’s “The Kill Room,” starring Uma Thurman and Samuel L. Jackson; and “The New Boy,” directed by Warwick Thornton and starring Cate Blanchett.

WFF’s feature documentary lineup includes several hit films that either debuted earlier this year at Sundance, Berlin, Toronto and Venice. They include: “Beyond Utopia” and “The Tuba Thieves” (Sundance), “Joan Baez I Am a Noise” (Berlin), “Defiant” and “Stamped From the Beginning” (Toronto) and “Hollywoodgate” (Venice).

James Ivory will take home the festival’s annual Lifetime Achievement Award for his string of film credits that “A Room With a View,” “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day.”

WFF will also feature panels with filmmakers and industry vets including Sheila Nevins, Barbara Kopple, Modine, Mary Stuart Masterson, Dana Weissman, director of programs at the Writers Guild of America East, Eugene Hernandez, director of the Sundance Film Festival and head of public programming, Bob Berney, CEO of Picturehouse, and John Sloss, founder and CEO of Cinetic Media.

Ukraine’s president accused Russia of waging “a criminal and unprovoked aggression” that undermines all norms of war and the U.N. Charter at a meeting Wednesday of the U.N. Security Council that started with a clash over his speech.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the council that he would not have come if he did not have a proposal to end the 19-month war, starting with adherence to the charter that ensures the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all 193 U.N. member nations. He stressed that restoration of all Ukrainian territory is the key to peace.

Before the meeting started, there was intense speculation about whether Zelenskyy and Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov, would clash, speak or totally avoid each other. But no confrontation happened because Zelenskyy left the council soon after his address.

The verbal fireworks began at the start of the meeting, before Lavrov arrived, when Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia protested the council president’s decision to allow Zelenskyy to speak ahead of the 15 council members.

He said Albanian President Edi Rama, this month’s council president, was trying to turn the meeting into “a one-man stand-up show,” adding that it would be “nothing more than a spectacle” — a dig at Zelenskyy’s past as a comedian.

Rama cited the council rule allowing a nonmember to speak first adding, to laughter, that “this is not a special operation by the Albanian presidency,” a dig at Russia’s insistence on referring to its offensive against Ukraine as a “special military operation.”

After another heated exchange over whether Nebenzia had referred to Rama as Albania’s prime minister and a NATO member instead of as the council president, Rama declared: “I take note, and we’ll continue with our session.”

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres then briefed the council, reiterating that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was “in clear violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.”

The war “is aggravating geopolitical tensions and divisions, threatening regional stability, increasing the nuclear threat and creating deep fissures in our increasingly multipolar world,” the U.N. chief warned.

Guterres again condemned the war and repeated his call for “a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine in line with the U.N. Charter and international law — for Ukraine, for Russia and for the world.”

Zelenskyy was the next speaker, sitting behind the Ukraine plaque at the Security Council’s horseshoe-shaped table in his traditional fatigues.

He called the invasion “a criminal and unprovoked aggression by Russia against our nation aimed at Ukraine’s territory and resources.”

“But it’s not just that,” he said. “The terrorist state is willing, through its aggression, to undermine all the grounds of international norms meant to protect the world from the wars.”

Story continues below advertisement

Ukraine has long accused Russia of being an illegal successor to the former Soviet Union, which collapsed in the early 1990s, and Zelenskyy went after Russia again for claiming the Soviet Union’s Security Council seat “through backstage manipulations.”

The Ukrainian leader accused Russia of “mass atrocities” of human rights and said action should be taken to prevent Moscow from using its veto at the Security Council. The U.N.’s most powerful body is charged with ensuring international peace and security, but has been blocked from taking any action on Ukraine because of Russia’s virtually certain veto.

Zelenskyy called for reforms to allow the 193 members of the U.N. General Assembly, where there are no vetoes, to suspend or strip the veto power of one of the five permanent members of the Security Council for egregious violations of the U.N. Charter.

The assembly has condemned Russia’s invasion and demanded the withdrawal of its forces and a reversal of its annexation of Ukrainian territory, but its resolutions are not legally binding.

Ukraine has come under pressure from some council members, including China, to engage in talks to end the war, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives on both sides.

Zelenskyy laid out two key concrete steps to ensure Ukraine’s future security: a complete withdrawal of all Russian troops, mercenaries and military and paramilitary “formations,” and ships, from Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory and its Black Sea waters. That step would be followed by “full restoration” of Ukrainian control “over the entire state border and exclusive economic zone.”

“Only the implementation of these two points will result in an honest, reliable and complete cessation of hostilities,” he said.

In a high-profile speech Tuesday to the General Assembly during its annual meeting of world leaders, the Ukrainian president accused Russia of using food, energy and even children as weapons in the war — and he warned other leaders that “when hatred is weaponized against one nation, it never stops there.”

The atmosphere was charged last year when Lavrov and Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba were both at a council meeting during the 2022 General Assembly gathering.

The two foreign ministers did not exchange any words. Lavrov arrived only minutes before his turn to speak and left immediately after. But beforehand, there was tension over the seating arrangement — a placard marking Ukraine’s seat was moved after Kuleba apparently objected to its placement next to Russia’s spot.

Shortly after becoming one of the only daytime talk show host to return for the fall amid the Hollywood strikes, Sherri Shepherd has tested positive for COVID and will pause production on “Sherri.”

“Unfortunately, Sherri has tested positive for COVID. The show will return with original episodes as soon as possible,” said a statement posted to the show’s Instagram page. “For the remainder of this week, encore episodes from the beginning of the premiere week will air. The health of our host and entire staff is of the utmost importance.”

The post also included a statement from Shepherd: “I am absolutely heartbroken that I cannot return to host my show this week,” she said. “As soon as I get the all-clear from my doctor, I look forward to coming back strong to deliver the fun, laughter and a real good time.”

“Sherri” returned for a new season on Monday. Unlike “The Drew Barrymore Show,” which received major backlash for announcing its return before reversing that decision, “Sherri” is not covered by the WGA, and because talk shows operate under the SAG-AFTRA Network Code, separate from the contract that covers scripted shows, actors are permitted to continue their hosting duties during the strike. “The Tamron Hall Show” and “Live with Kelly and Mark” have also returned for the fall, though some daytimers in similar positions, such as “The Jennifer Hudson Show” and “The Talk” have still pushed back their originally scheduled premieres. “The View” has also been airing throughout the strike, though the production has been picketed as the show does employ WGA writers.

“There has been so much confusion about who can work and who can’t work. Well, I’m a SAG-AFTRA actress and I actually marched with some of my colleagues while in Los Angeles recently,” Shepherd said on Monday’s show. “But here’s the thing, talk shows in general fall under a different union contract code, so we’re allowed to come back unless you’re a WGA show. The ‘Sherri’ show is not a WGA show and we have never employed WGA writers, so us coming back to work isn’t crossing the picket line.”

UPDATED, 9:11 a.m.: After previewing the first trailer for The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes at CinemaCon, Lionsgate has unveiled another one teasing Rachel Zegler’s fight for survival in the arena.

The West Side Story actress stars as Lucy Gray Baird, the female District 12 tribute to the 10th Hunger Games, in the new film based on the books by Suzanne Collins, which launches in theaters November 17th. Starring alongside her is Tom Blyth, who portrays Coriolanus Snow, Baird’s mentor in this game of survival who finds himself torn between his duties to the Capitol and Head Gamemaker Dr. Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis) and burgeoning feelings for his mentee.

Read more about the film below. View the new trailer above.

PREVIOUSLY, APRIL 27: Lionsgate dropped the trailer for its prequel film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes at CinemaCon today. It’s a first look at tribute Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) and Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), with Peter Dinklage as the vindictive Casca Highbottom, Dean of the Academy, creator of the Hunger Games. Viola Davis is Head Gamemaker Volumnia Gaul. Watch the trailer above.

It’s the annual reaping ceremony of the 10th annual games, set 64 years before the first film. Lucy represents impoverished District 12 and 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is her unwilling — at first — mentor. He’s much more conflicted in his views in this film, decades before he becomes Panem’s tyrannical president. “There have been some changes this year,” he is told. “Your role is to turn these children into spectacles, not survivors.”

But after Lucy commands all Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive ultimately will reveal who is a songbird and who is a snake.

Like the previous films, themes here are freedom and tyranny, good and evil, how both can co-exist and why people chose one over the other. “There is natural goodness built into all a us. We can step across that line into evil — or not,” says Lucy. Panem is full of cranes and construction — rebuilding a decade after a brutal civil war.

The prequel in the $3 billion-grossing global franchise will hit theaters around the world on November 17. Hunger Games franchise sequel producer Francis Lawrence directed and also will produce with the series producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins, Tim Palen and Jim Miller are EPs.

Singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens revealed Wednesday that he has been hospitalized due to being diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Stevens shared the news with his fans in a post on his website on Wednesday morning.

“Last month I woke up one morning and couldn’t walk. My hands, arms and legs were numb and tingling and I had no strength, no feeling, no mobility,” he wrote. “My brother drove me to the ER and after a series of tests — MRIs, EMGs, cat scans, X-rays, spinal taps (!), echo-cardiograms, etc. — the neurologists diagnosed me with an auto immune disorder called Guillian-Barré Syndrome.”

According to the World Health Organization, in Guillain-Barré syndrome, the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system, which can affect nerves that control muscle movement and can result in muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the limbs and problems swallowing or breathing.

The Grammy-nominated artist added that he had been “stuck in bed” in the hospital for weeks while a medical staff worked on stabilizing his condition. He called the experience “very scary.”

For the past few weeks, Stevens has been undergoing “intensive physical therapy/occupational therapy, strength building etc. to get [his] body back in shape and to learn to walk again.”

The “Mystery of Love” singer has kept an optimistic mindset throughout the process.

“Most people who have GBS learn to walk again on their own within a year, so I am hopeful,” he wrote. “I’m only in my second week of rehab but it is going really well and I am working really hard to get back on my feet. I’m committed to getting better, I’m in good spirits, and I’m surrounded by a really great team. I want to be well!”

Stevens also noted that his medical setbacks have prevented him from promoting the release of his highly anticipated 10th album, “Javelin,” which is scheduled for an Oct. 6 drop.

Summary

  • Gustin’s portrayal of The Flash in the Arrowverse had a funnier and less awkward first run compared to Miller’s version in the DCEU film.
  • The Flash series did a better job explaining how Barry Allen acquired and used the iconic Flash ring, while the movie left this detail unexplained.
  • The chemistry and relationship between Gustin’s Barry Allen and Iris West was stronger and more developed in the Arrowverse compared to Miller’s awkward interactions with Iris in the movie.

The Flash may be the Scarlet Speedster’s biggest cinematic outing to date, but there are still several things that Grant Gustin’s version of the hero in the Arrowverse did better than Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen in the DCEU. Gustin was the first of the two to give life to Barry Allen, with the actor leading nine seasons of The Flash series before Miller got to star in a single solo movie as DC’s most famous speedster. Interestingly, the two actors’ time as The Flash is intertwined, as Miller got announced as the DCEU’s Barry Allen just a week after Gustin’s Arrowverse series premiered, with Miller leading The Flash‘s cast just a couple of months after Gustin finally hung up his Flash costume.

Unfortunately, The Flash ended up as one of the DCEU’s more disappointing films and also became one of DC’s biggest box office disappointments in history. A lot of the criticism regarding The Flash went toward its subpar CGI and unconventional choices of multiverse cameos, the latter of which omitted Gustin’s Barry Allen. Despite not playing a role in The Flash‘s multiverse story, Gustin’s version of The Flash went through many of the things that Miller’s Barry did in the movie. Here are 10 moments in The Flash that Gustin’s Barry did better in the Arrowverse.

10 The Flash’s First Run

The Flash features Miller playing two versions of Barry Allen due to the hero’s time travel adventure. When the younger Barry gets his powers, the character proceeds to have fun with his speed, which awkwardly shifts to him running all over Central City naked due to his clothes being burned away by friction. In the Arrowverse’s The Flash series, Gustin’s Barry Allen has a funnier and less awkward first run. Barry is dealing with his hand strangely shaking, which leads to him discovering his super speed. Barry then tries out his new power, only to fall straight into a laundry van, saying, “Awesome.”

9 Barry’s First Time Using The Flash Ring

ezra miller as barry allen aka the flash with the flash costume ring

The Flash ring containing the hero’s suit is a major trademark of the character in the comics, and both Gustin and Miller’s Barry Allens possess the item. However, there is a clear difference between the two heroes where the ring is concerned. While The Flash series has Barry get his The Flash ring from Norah West-Allen — his daughter who comes from the future to meet him — Miller’s Barry Allen simply has the ring in The Flash. A tie-in comic reveals it was given to him by Bruce Wayne, but that detail is left out of the movies.

8 The Flash’s First Time Travel

Custom image of Grant Gustin's Barry Allen on the left with his face visible and The Flash running away from the camera, with lots of lightining behind, on the right.

Time travel plays a big role in both The Flash movie and series, but Gustin’s Barry Allen has the best first time travel. In the Arrowverse, The Flash tries to stop a tsunami caused by the second Weather Wizard, and while running as fast as he can to save Central City, Barry ends up shockingly time-traveling for the first time. In The Flash movie, Miller’s Barry Allen time travels as he starts running in the middle of a street alone, with no immediate threat forcing him to break the space/time barrier. His time travel in Zack Snyder’s Justice League is better but may or may not be DCEU canon.

7 Gustin’s Barry Has A Better Relationship With Iris

Barry and Iris West The Flash season 5 episode 5

While the Arrowverse has had more time to flesh out Barry and Iris’ relationship to the point that they are a married couple and parents, the relationship between the two was strong from the get-go, with Gustin and Candice Patton having extraordinary onscreen chemistry. In The Flash movie, the first time the DCEU’s Barry and Iris interact in canon as Iris was cut from 2017’s Justice League, Miller’s Barry Allen has mostly awkward interactions with Kiersey Clemons’ Iris West. While the chemistry between both characters could have been built up in a possible The Flash sequel, it was not instantly magnetic like in the Arrowverse.

6 Fighting His Evil Self

The Flash Season 3 Savitar

The Flash season 3 saw Barry Allen discover that the evil Savitar, who was meant to kill Iris, was none other than an evil version of himself. Close to The Flash movie’s ending, it is revealed that the ominous Dark Flash is none other than the young Barry after he went mad trying repeatedly to stop Batman and Supergirl from dying. While the reveal of Dark Flash’s identity was cool, the villain was beaten way too easily and fast. Savitar’s tragic connection to Barry and the fear of him killing Iris at a set date made the villain a much bigger threat than Dark Flash.

5 The Arrowverse Features Ezra Miller’s The Flash

The-Flash-Grant-Gustin-Ezra-Miller-Arrowverse-DCEU

One of the biggest complaints about the DCEU movie was that The Flash‘s multiverse cameos didn’t include Gustin’s Barry Allen, which would have been such an obvious choice, as the movie decided to feature alternate versions of Batman and Superman and only a generic Golden Age Flash instead. The Arrowverse did a much better job in that regard, with the DC TV’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event bringing together Gustin and Miller’s versions of The Flash, with the DCEU hero even getting the idea for his name from the Arrowverse Barry. Sadly, The Flash movie didn’t pay off that interaction.

4 Grant Gustin’s The Flash Did Legacy Cameos Better

Barry Allen and Jay Garrick stand together in Flash

Past DC actors — multiple of whom are no longer alive — returned as their iconic heroes in The Flash movie. Those cameos included Christopher Reeve’s Superman and Adam West’s Batman with egregious CGI models. Gustin’s Arrowverse series did a much better job with its legacy cameos, casting actors such as past TV Flash John Wesley Shipp and Trickster actor Mark Hamill, the latter playing his same character from Shipp’s The Flash series. Shipp would play multiple roles in the show, including Henry Allen, Jay Garrick, and even his Barry Allen from the 1990 The Flash show, with the Arrowverse doing a better job at honoring legacy actors than The Flash movie.

3 Gustin’s Barry Allen Has Better Interactions With Supergirl

Supergirl The Flash Behind the Scenes Featurette Pose

While The Flash movie’s marketing heavily promoted the debut of Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, the hero was barely in the film. Calle’s Supergirl was not the most talkative, with her stoic personality contrasting with Miller’s vibrant Barry Allens, and they shared little chemistry. That could not be further from the Arrowverse’s case. Gustin’s Barry was the first hero to meet Melissa Benoist’s Kara Danvers, with The Flash and Supergirl growing to form a tight bond in the Arrowverse. Both Gustin and Benoist’s heroes share the same bubbly personality, which led to their interactions always being a delight, with the two even appearing together on a musical crossover.

2 The Arrowverse Actually Uses The Flash’s Rogues

The Flash Weather Wizard Trickster Captain Cold

The Flash movie’s opening featured Miller’s The Flash, Ben Affleck’s Batman, and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman dealing with a group of criminals from Gotham City, which could have been made better if the movie had actually decided to use The Flash’s most famous villain group, the Rogues. In the DCEU, Miller’s The Flash only briefly fought one of the Rogues, Captain Boomerang, in Suicide Squad. While mostly in its early seasons, Gustin’s The Flash fought several of the Rogues, including characters like Captain Cold, the Trickster, Weather Wizard, and Captain Boomerang. The Arrowverse series gave the villain team a much bigger focus than the DCEU did.

1 Barry’s Mother Getting Killed Is More Emotional In The Arrowverse

Barry Allen is with Nora when she dies The Flash

The night Barry Allen’s mom died has been revisited many times throughout The Flash‘s nine seasons, with the first leg of the show’s four-part series finale revisiting that scene yet again. In the series, Nora Allen’s death scene is actually shown, unlike in The Flash movie, with the Reverse-Flash being revealed to be her killer. The Flash season 9 finally revealed that the last season’s Barry was the future version of Gustin’s character that went back in time to fight the Reverse-Flash and save his younger self that tragic night, making things come full circle, which is more impactful than how the DCEU’s The Flash handled that moment.

Summary Gustin's portrayal of The Flash

Just a few years ago, Nintendo was at a crossroads. The Wii U was languishing well in third place in the console wars and, after considerable pressure, the company was making its first tentative steps into mobile gaming with Miitomo and Super Mario Run. Fast-forward to today: The Switch is likely on the way to becoming the company’s best-selling “home console” ever, and seven Switch games have outsold the Wii U console. Everything’s coming up Nintendo, then, thanks to the Switch’s unique hybrid format and an ever-growing game library with uncharacteristically strong third-party support.

However, the Switch’s online store isn’t the easiest to navigate, so this guide aims to help the uninitiated start off on the right foot and find the best Nintendo Switch games for them. These are the titles you should own — for now. We regularly revise and add to the list as appropriate. Oh, and if you’ve got a Switch Lite, don’t worry: Every game on the list is fully supported by the portable-only console.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the best game in the series yet. It streamlines many of the clunky aspects from earlier games and gives players plenty of motivation to keep shaping their island community. As you’d expect, it also looks better than any previous entry, giving you even more motivation to fill up your virtual home and closet. The sound design reaches ASMR levels of brain-tingling comfort. And yes, it certainly helps that New Horizons is an incredibly soothing escape from reality when we’re all stuck at home in the midst of a global pandemic.

Bayonetta 3

Bayonetta 3 is a delicious amplification of the series’ most ridiculous themes. It indulges in absurdity without disrupting the rapid-fire combat or Bayonetta’s unrivaled sense of fashion and wit. Bayonetta 3 is joyful, mechanically rich and full of action, plus it allows players to transform into a literal hell train in order to take down massive beasts bent on destroying the multiverse. Bayonetta elegantly dances her way through battles, dropping one-liners and shooting enemies with her gun shoes in one moment, and turning into a giant spider creature the next.

The Bayonetta series just keeps getting weirder, but that doesn’t mean it’s losing its sense of satisfying gameplay along the way. In the franchise’s third installment, Bayonetta is powerful, confident and funny; she’s a drag queen in a universe loosely held together by witchcraft, and the chaos of this combination is truly magical.

Neon White

Like all good games, Neon White is simple to learn, and difficult to master. The basic ask is that you vanquish every demon from a level and head to a finish marker. It plays like a fast-paced first-person shooter, with the complexity coming from your weapons, which are cards that can either fire or be spent for a special movement or attack ability. The real challenge comes from the scoring system, which grades you based on the time you took to complete a level.

There are just shy of 100 levels, all begging to be learned, repeated and perfected. Despite its first-person shooter visuals, it plays out more like a cross between Trackmania and a platformer. You’ll quickly turn that bronze medal into a gold, and then an “ace” that is supposedly your ultimate target. Then you’ll see the online leaderboards and realize you’ve left some seconds on the table. Then you’ll randomly achieve the secret red medal on a level, say “oh no” and realize that there’s a hidden tier of perfection for you to attain. – Aaron Souppouris, Executive Editor

Paramormasight

If you enjoy visual novels, diverging storylines and maintaining a near-constant level of vigilance to everything a game tells you, Paranormasight is a wild ride. Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ties together nine (don’t ask) Japanese folktales, spirits, curses and, well, ukiyoe block prints. You’ll hop between multiple characters once you’ve completed the tutorial-style first story, although you’ll inevitably return to this one in the search of clues and hints. Even the style of presentation fits in with the Japanese Twilight Zone vibe. The illustrations have frayed red, blue and green outlines that imitate old TVs. You’ll confront others who hold lethal curse powers creating anime-style stand-offs, as you either try to sneak your way out of danger or get other curse-bearers to fall into your trap. Eventually, it all comes together to a smart conclusion, and we hope there are further Paranormasight chapters to come. — Mat Smith, UK Bureau Chief

Metroid Prime Remastered

Metroid Prime Remastered modernizes one of Nintendo’s greatest games, overhauling its models, textures and lighting for HD (while staying at a locked 60 fps) and adding a more comfortable dual-stick control scheme. It leaves the core game alone otherwise, which is a very good thing. Metroid Prime remains a masterwork in atmosphere, one that captures the wonder and isolation of encountering an alien world through someone else’s eyes. Though there is some combat as bounty hunter Samus Aran, this is more of a first-person exploration game than a first-person shooter. Some 20 years on, slowing down and taking in the world of Tallon IV’s details remains entrancing. — Jeff Dunn, Senior Commerce Writer

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Kirby and the Forgotten Land brings Nintendo’s lovable pink blob into 3D. Its structure is far less open and fluid than Super Mario Odyssey, but the game is similarly playful in spirit. The big hook is “mouthful mode,” wherein Kirby swallows and assumes the form of certain objects to get through specific stages. Apart from simply being amusing – enjoy “Coaster-Mouth Kirby” or “Bolted-Storage-Mouth Kirby” – the way this repurposes ordinary materials and presents new sensations is delightful. “Pipe Mouth Kirby” turns a pipe in a rolling cylinder of destruction, “Water-Balloon Mouth Kirby” turns you into a giant wobbly mass, and so on. While it starts recycling by the end, most of the game parades through new ideas in that classic Nintendo way. Though the story isn’t Pulitzer stuff, its ending is wonderfully absurd. And like most Kirby games, it’s breezy enough for folks of all skill levels but not a total cakewalk on the default difficulty. — J.D.

Astral Chain

I was on the fence about Astral Chain from the day the first trailer came out until a good few hours into my playthrough. It all felt a little too generic, almost a paint-by-numbers rendition of an action game. I needn’t have been so worried, as it’s one of the more original titles to come from PlatinumGames, the developer behind the Bayonetta series, in recent years.

In a future where the world is under constant attack from creatures that exist on another plane of existence, you play as an officer in a special force that deals with this threat. The game’s gimmick is that you can tame these creatures to become Legions that you use in combat. Encounters play out with you controlling both your character and the Legion simultaneously to deal with waves of mobs and larger, more challenging enemies. As well as for combat, you’ll use your Legion(s) to solve crimes and traverse environments.

Astral Chain sticks closely to a loop of detective work, platforming puzzles and combat — a little too closely, if I’m being critical — with the game split into cases that serve as chapters. The story starts off well enough but quickly devolves into a mashup of various anime tropes, including twists and arcs ripped straight from some very famous shows and films. However, the minute-to-minute gameplay is enough to keep you engaged through the 20-hour or so main campaign and into the fairly significant end-game content.

Does Astral Chain reach the heights of Nier: Automata? No, not at all, but its combat and environments can often surpass that game, which all-told is probably my favorite of this generation. Often available for under $50 these days, it’s well worth your time.

Celeste

Celeste is a lot of things. It’s a great platformer, but it’s also a puzzle game. It’s extremely punishing, but it’s also very accessible. It puts gameplay above everything, but it has a great story. It’s a beautiful, moving and memorable contradiction of a game, created by MattMakesGames, the indie studio behind the excellent Towerfall. So, Celeste is worth picking up no matter what platform you own, but its room-based levels and clear 2D artwork make it a fantastic game to play on the Switch when on the go.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age

  • DRAGON QUEST XI S – Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition – [Switch Digital Code]

Dragon Quest XI is an unashamedly traditional Japanese role-playing game. Most of the characters are established RPG tropes: mute protagonist-who’s-actually-a-legendary-hero, sister mages, mysterious rogue and the rest. Then there’s the battle system, which has rarely changed in the decades of the series. (There’s a reason that this special edition features a 16-bit styled version of the game: The mechanics and story work just as well in more… graphically constrained surroundings.) While the story hits a lot of familiar RPG beats, everything takes an interesting turn later on. And through it, the game demands completion. RPGs require compelling stories, and this has one. It just doesn’t quite kick in until later.

This eleventh iteration of the series also serves as a celebration of all things Dragon Quest. Without getting too deep into the story, the game heavily references the first game, taking place in the same narrative universe, just hundreds of years later.

The Switch edition doesn’t offer the most polished take on the game — it’s available on rival consoles — but the characters, designed by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame, move around fluidly, in plenty of detail despite the limits of the hybrid console. And while it’s hard to explain, there’s also something just plain right about playing a traditional JRPG on a Nintendo console.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a must-play game. Developer Intelligent Systems made a lot of tweaks to its formula for the series’ first outing on the Nintendo Switch, and the result of those changes is a game that marries Fire Emblem’s dual personalities in a meaningful and satisfying way. You’ll spend half your time as a master tactician, commanding troops around varied and enjoyable battlefields. The other half? You’ll be teaching students and building relationships as a professor at the finest school in the land.

Hades

Hades was the first early access title to ever make our best PC game list, and the final game is a perfect fit for Nintendo’s Switch. It’s an action-RPG developed by the team behind Bastion, Transistor and Pyre. You play Zagreus, son of Hades, who’s having a little spat with his dad, and wants to escape from the underworld. To do so, Zagreus has to fight his way through the various levels of the underworld and up to the surface. Along the way, you’ll pick up “boons” from a wide range of ancient deities like Zeus, Ares and Aphrodite, which stack additional effects on your various attacks. Each level is divided into rooms full of demons, items and the occasional miniboss.

As Hades is a “roguelike” game, you start at the same place every time, with the levels rearranged. With that said, the items you collect can be used to access and upgrade new weapons and abilities that stick between sessions. Hades initially caught our attention just for its gameplay: You can jump in for 30 minutes and have a blast, or find yourself playing for hours. As the game neared its final release, the storytelling, world-building and its general character really started to take shape — there’s so much to do, so many people to meet and even some romance stuffed in there. You could play for hundreds of hours and still have fun.

Hollow Knight

This was a real sleeper hit, and one of very few Kickstarter games to not only live up to but exceed expectations. Hollow Knight is a 2D action-adventure game in the Metroidvania style, but it’s also just a mood. Set in a vast, decrepit land, which you’ll explore gradually as you unlock new movement and attack skills for your character, a Burtonesque bug-like creature. Short on both dialogue and narrative, the developers instead convey a story through environment and atmosphere, and it absolutely nails it.

You’ll start out feeling fairly powerless, but Hollow Knight has a perfect difficulty curve, always allowing you to progress but never making it easy. For example, it borrows the Dark Souls mechanic where you’ll need to travel back to your corpse upon death to retrieve your “Geo” (the game’s stand-in for Souls), which is always a tense time. Throughout it all, though, the enemies and NPCs will never fail to delight. For a moody game, it has a nice sense of humor and levity imbued mostly through the beautifully animated and voiced folks you meet. Given its low cost and extremely high quality, there’s really no reason not to get this game. Trust us, it’ll win you over.

Into The Breach

When is a turn-based strategy game not a turn-based strategy game? Into the Breach, an indie roguelike game where you control mechs to stem an alien attack, defies conventions, and is all the better for it. While its core mechanics are very much in the XCOM (or Fire Emblem, for that matter) mold, it’s what it does with those mechanics that’s so interesting. A traditional turn-based strategy game plays out like a game of chess — you plan a move, while predicting what your opponent will do in return, and thinking ahead to what you’ll do next, and so on, with the eventual goal of forcing them into a corner and winning. At the start of every Into the Breach turn, the game politely tells you exactly what each enemy character is going to do, down the exact square they’ll end on and how much damage they’ll inflict. There are no hit percentages, no random events, no luck; each turn is a puzzle, with definitive answers to how exactly you’re going to come out on top.

Into the Breach battles are short, and being a roguelike, designed to be very replayable. Once you’ve mastered the basics and reached the end, there are numerous different mechs with new attack and defense mechanics to learn and master as you mix-and-match to build your favorite team. If you’re a fan of either puzzle or turn-based strategy games, this is a must-have.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild signals the biggest shift in the series since the Nintendo 64’s Ocarina of Time, and it might well be one of the best games of the past decade. It pulls the long-running series into modern gaming, with a perfectly pitched difficulty curve and an incredible open world to play with. There’s crafting, weapons that degrade, almost too much to collect and do and a gentle story hidden away for players to discover for themselves. Even without the entertaining DLC add-ons, there’s simply so much to do here and challenges for every level of gamer.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a wild reinvention for one of Nintendo’s most revered franchises, and it didn’t take long for the company to announce it had a direct sequel in the works. The end result is Tears of the Kingdom, a game that remixes BotW in some completely unexpected ways. You’re still exploring Hyrule and can travel to almost any point you can see, and there are still dozens of small shrines to clear and bigger quests you can tackle in any order you like.

But there’s also a vast underworld as well as a mysterious sky world full of islands to explore, and these new locales provide fresh challenges and dangers distinct from what you find in Hyrule proper. And Link has several new skills to give him the upper hand, including, well, Ultrahand. This lets you grab almost anything and stick it to other objects, letting you build all manner of contraptions, both practical and absurd. Ultrahand opens up a huge variety of solutions to every puzzle you come across in the game, and the moment when you find the right solution to what’s impeding you is even more satisfying than it is in past Zelda games. Tears of the Kingdom simply takes just about everything that was great about Breath of the Wild and ratchets it up to the next level. — Nathan Ingraham, Deputy Editor

Disco Elysium Final Cut

Disco Elysium is a special game. The first release from Estonian studio ZA/UM, it’s a sprawling science-fiction RPG that takes more inspiration from D&D and Baldur’s Gate than modern combat-focused games. In fact, there is no combat to speak of, instead, you’ll be creating your character, choosing what their strengths and weaknesses are, and then passing D&D-style skill checks to make your way through the story. You’ll, of course, be leveling up your abilities and boosting stats with items, but really the game’s systems fall away in place of a truly engaging story, featuring some of the finest writing to ever grace a video game.

With the Final Cut, released 18 months after the original, this extremely dialogue-heavy game now has full voice acting, which brings the unique world more to life than ever before. After debuting on PC, PS5 and Stadia, Final Cut is now available for all extant home consoles – including Nintendo’s Switch. Loading times are a little slower than on other systems, so it might not be the absolute best platform to play it on, but Disco Elysium is an experience unlike the rest of the Switch library, which is why it makes it on this list.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s vibrancy and attention to detail prove it’s a valid upgrade to the Wii U original. Characters are animated and endearing as they race around, and Nintendo’s made bigger, wider tracks to accommodate up to 12 racers. This edition of Mario Kart included gravity-defying hover tires and automatic gliders for when you soar off ramps, making races even more visually thrilling, but at its core, it’s Mario Kart — simple, pure gaming fun. It’s also a great showcase for the multitude of playing modes that the Switch is capable of: Two-player split-screen anywhere is possible, as are online races or Switch-on-Switch chaos. For now, this is the definitive edition.

OlliOlli World

OlliOlli and its sequel, OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood, were notoriously difficult to master. They were infuriating, but also extremely satisfying when you pulled off just the right combo of tricks and grinds needed for a big score.

I was worried that OlliOlli World’s colorful and welcoming new direction for the series was going to dispense with that level of challenge, but I shouldn’t have been concerned. Developer Roll7 made a game that’s significantly more approachable than the original titles — but one that keeps the twitch-response gameplay and score-chasing highs intact for those who crave them.

It’s hard to sum up exactly what makes OlliOlli World so compelling, but the game mixes serious challenges with moments that let you really get into that elusive flow state, where you’re just pulling off tricks, riding rails and generally tearing through a course without thinking too much about what you’re doing. The music, sound effects, art style, level design and variety of moves you can pull off all contribute to this vibe — and even though the game looks entirely different from its predecessors, the end result is the same: skateboarding bliss.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Super Mario 3D World was unfairly slept on when it originally launched in 2013, mostly due to the fact very few people had a Wii U. It’s a superb translation of old-school retro Mario mechanics into 3D (Mario 64 is a masterpiece, yes, but unless you’re a speed-runner it doesn’t quite have the pace of the NES and SNES games). It’s also a great multiplayer game, as you can play in co-op mode with three other players and race through levels — the winner of each level gets to wear a crown in the next.

With the move to the Switch, and Nintendo finally starting to figure out online gaming, you can now do that remotely, which is a huge plus. The bigger addition is Bowser’s Fury, an all-new game of sorts that plays more like a blend of Super Mario Odyssey and 3D World. There are some really creative challenges that feel right out of Odyssey, blended with the lightness and speed of the Wii U game. (It should be noted that Bowser’s Fury is also only good for one or two players, unlike the main game.) We’d recommend 3D World just on its own, but as a package with Bowser’s Fury, it becomes a much better deal.

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey might not represent the major change that Breath of the Wild was for the Zelda series, but it’s a great Mario game that’s been refined across the last two decades. Yes, we got some important modern improvements, like maps and fast travel, and the power-stealing Cappy is a truly fun addition to Mario’s usual tricks. But that core joy of Mario, figuring out the puzzles, racing to collect items and exploring landmarks, is here in abundance.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

This is the ultimate distillation of Nintendo’s multiplayer fighting game. The series’ debut on Switch brings even more characters from beyond Nintendo’s stable. If you’re sick of Mario, Pikachu and Metroid’s Samus, perhaps Final Fantasy VII‘s Cloud, Solid Snake or Bayonetta will be your new go-to character. There are about 80 characters to test out here (although 10 of them are locked behind DLC).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features a divisive new single-player mode where you augment characters with stickers, battling through special conditions to unlock more characters and, yes, more stickers. At its core, Smash Bros. games combine fast-paced, chaotic fights with an incredibly beginner-friendly learning curve. Yes, some items are confusing or overpowered, but your special moves are only a two-button combination away. Turning the tables is built into the DNA of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, ensuring thrilling battles (once you’ve sorted handicaps) for everyone involved.

45th EDITION OF THE FESTIVAL DES 3 CONTINENTS

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION · DISTRIBUTION SUPPORT AWARD

A new prize to support film distribution sponsored by SIX ARES – AVENTIM Group, an active promoter from Nantes

For the first time, the professional jury of the Festival des 3 Continents will award the Distribution Support Award, donated by SIX ARES – AVENTIM Group, to one of the feature films in its prestigious international competition.

The 45th edition of the festival, dedicated to the cinema of Africa, Asia and Latin America, will be held from 24 November to 3 December 2023 in Nantes, France.

The Distribution Support Award aims to support the distribution of the winning film in French cinemas. By associating itself with the Festival des 3 Continents, the property developer SIX ARES – AVENTIM Group, a new partner of the festival, wishes to contribute to the discovery and visibility of original and contemporary works on the big screen.

The French distributor of the winning film will receive an endowment of 3,000 euros, offered by SIX ARES, AVENTIM Group.

“The Distribution Support Award is something we’ve been thinking about for a long time, and SIX ARES is making it possible this year,” explains Jérôme Baron, artistic director of the festival. “Often the films in competition that we show in Nantes don’t have a distributor in France, or their distributors need support in their bold choices. The Distribution Support Award is a direct help for the distributor. It enables the distributor to position itself and the film to be released in French cinemas.”

“As a major player in the Nantes area, we are delighted to be able to support emerging films by sponsoring the Festival des 3 Continents. It’s also a nod to our “Synopsys” operation, as we’re setting up an art-house cinema on the Cour des 50 Otages (Nantes).
