The new head of the AFCI has big goals for the organization, and looks to promote stability within the leadership, which has seen a few presidents come and go in the past handful of years.

“I really want to reassure people that I’m in this for the long haul and I feel like I have the right skill set to take the organization through and develop a really good strategy for it for the next 10 years,” says Jaclyn Philpott, the recently installed AFCI exec director. “I’ll be ready and willing to answer any questions that they may have. You know, I’ve had a very good look under the hood at the organization, from the financials through the previous strategies to what’s happening in the market right now, and I feel like I have a good idea of what they want based on what they’ve told me and in my own research.”

While the thirst for content from streamers has boosted production all over the world — even as that thirst has been slaked somewhat recently — and regions are seeing that TV and film production can help diversify local economies — as Saudi Arabia has done — Philpott says she sees significant opportunities for growth and collaboration between the AFCI, its members, government and the production industry.

“There are so many emerging regions. … But what I love about these new smaller regions is they really understand the power of film tourism and tourism in general, and I think that’s also something that ACFI needs to consider:  what is our role in growing regions? How can we help film commissions get with the tools that help them from an economic development perspective? There are tools that we can provide, whether it’s around the type of conversation to have with your local governments, to the basics of marketing.”

AFCI Week, running March 27-30 at the Sofitel Los Angeles in Beverly Hills, gathers members for conversations, panels and networking. The panel topics are wide-ranging, aligning with Philpott’s goal of collaboration and education. Topics include virtual production, a talk on navigating government relationships, using data and AI, workforce development and even a session — only open to AFCI members — called How Would
You Handle It with the AFCI board.

“It’s always exciting because I’ve been told it means that you can get up and say anything. What would you do if this happened? And what would you do? It gives members an opportunity to really speak freely about things that are going on in their regions. And this is the value again of bringing people together in person,” says Philpott.

She’s also excited about the “The Last of Us” case study, featuring HBO senior VPs Jay Roewe and Katie Hayes, and Luke Azevedo, Calgary Film Commission VP, who will discuss how HBO and the film commission worked together on the hit series.

“I think this is not necessarily just ‘The Last of Us,’ but it’s any film commission who’s working really closely with a production company and a location manager. I can’t wait to hear that story because this is absolutely what we’re all about — connection and collaboration,” says Philpott. “I think some interesting, key insights will come from there.”

AFCI’s other immediate goals include expanding its education and diversity awareness programs to “empower members to create such programs in their own regions.”

In the end, it’s about sustaining members’ passion for  the business.

“I think it’s also helpful just to always go back to the why we do this, and what are the positive impacts of what we’re doing,” notes Philpott. “It’s about creating jobs, and creating skills, pathways, and giving people transformative experiences. And I think when you can connect back into that, it makes the long hours all that much better.”

Netflix in the US was treated to seasons 1 and 2 of iCarly all the way back in February 2021, and after years of waiting, we’ve finally learned that additional seasons will be joining (in the US). Here’s what you need to know.

As you probably know, iCarly is the Nickelodeon show that ran between 2007 and 2012 across six seasons. The show comes from Nick’s super-producer Dan Schneider and features the talents of Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, and Jennette McCurdy.

After years of begging, Netflix was able to license the series from Paramount, and it arrived on Netflix (but only in the United States) on February 8th, 2021.

The series has recently seen a significant spike in interest, given Nickelodeon’s revival for Paramount+ which has run for 2 seasons with the third scheduled for release in 2023.

The series came to Netflix along with a slew of Nickelodeon titles over the past few years. Netflix got a batch of Nick titles in early 2020 with Avatar: The Last Airbender. In 2021, 2 seasons of its shows hit Netflix, including Henry Danger and The Haunted Hathaways joined.

That’s all in addition to the output deal Netflix signed with Nickelodeon for them to produce exclusive content for Netflix.

What seasons of iCarly are on Netflix US?

The series is on Netflix and labeled as seasons 1-2, but that doesn’t actually tell the whole story.

In fact, Netflix really got seasons 1-3, as some clever sleuths on Twitter pointed out (h/t NickAlive). Netflix got season 1, which consists of 25 episodes, and then it combined seasons 2 and 3 (for a total of 39 episodes) into what’s labeled as season 2 on the service.

So that means that when looking towards the future, we need to ask when seasons 4 to 6 of iCarly are coming to Netflix.

So, when will seasons 4-6 of iCarly be on Netflix?

For the past few years, we’ve not been expecting any of the later seasons of iCarly to come to Netflix.

This is because up until recently, Paramount has been selectively licensing out titles to build up audiences for them or what we think they’re doing with iCarly, teasing you into a Paramount+ subscription to watch the remaining seasons.

However, in late Feburary 2023, Netflix alerted us that they’d be adding iCarly seasons 3 to 5 on Netflix in the US on March 31st, 2023.

It’ll arrive alongside Henry Danger seasons 4 & 5, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles season 2, and House of Anubis.

All five seasons will remain on Paramount+ alongside Netflix.

Will the iCarly Reboot be on Netflix?

What we can continue to rule out is the rebooted iCarly coming to Netflix (at least anytime soon).

The series remains exclusive to Paramount+.

Are you looking forward to seeing more seasons of iCarly join Netflix?

“Succession” Season 4 is here, kicking off the final episodes of the Emmy-winning HBO series. The Roy family is at an inflection point as the final season begins: Logan (Brian Cox) has cut his children out once and for good, preparing to sell Waystar to a tech giant (headed up by Alexander Skarsgard’s Matsson) and severing ties with Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin).

After watching three seasons of jaw-dropping backstabbing and plot twists, all eyes are on how this thing ends, and if we’ll finally get an answer to the question posed in the show’s first episode: Who will succeed Logan Roy?

With that in mind, you may be wondering when new episodes of “Succession” air, and what time you can watch them (especially if you’re on the west coast). Here’s a complete “Succession” Season 4 episode release schedule.

When Does “Succession” Season 4 Premiere?

HBO premieres the first episode of “Succession” Season 4 on Sunday, March 26, 2023 on HBO and HBO Max

What Time Does “Succession” Come on HBO?

New episodes of “Succession” are available every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, but if you’re watching on the HBO Max streaming service (in 4K to boot), you can watch new episodes at 6 p.m. PT so you’re not spoiled by those watching on the east coast.

Are New Episodes Released Weekly or All at Once?

In keeping with the release strategy of past seasons, “Succession” Season 4 will be rolling out weekly. Here’s the full schedule:

  • Episode 1: Sunday, March 26 (“The Munsters”)
  • Episode 2: Sunday, April 2 (“The Rehearsal”)
  • Episode 3: Sunday, April 9 (“Connor’s Wedding”)
  • Episode 4: Sunday, April 16
  • Episode 5: Sunday, April 23
  • Episode 6: Sunday, April 30
  • Episode 7: Sunday, May 7
  • Episode 8: Sunday, May 14 (Series Finale)

Who Is in the “Succession” Season 4 Cast?

The “Succession” Season 4 cast includes:

  • Brian Cox as Logan Roy
  • Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy
  • Sarah Snook as Shiv Roy
  • Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy
  • Matthew Macfadyen as Tom Wambsgans
  • Nicholas Braun as Greg Hirsch
  • Alan Ruck as Connor Roy
  • J. Smith-Cameron as Gerri Kellman
  • David Rasche as Karl Muller
  • Peter Friedman as Frank Vernon
  • Justine Lupe as Willa Ferreya
  • Dagmara Domińczyk as Karolina Novotney
  • Fisher Stevens as Hugo Baker

Is This Really the Final Season of “Succession?”

Yes. Showrunner and creator Jesse Armstrong made the decision with his writers late last year that Season 4 would be the last season of the HBO series, despite HBO wanting more.

“We played out various scenarios: We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks,” Armstrong told the New Yorker. “Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference.”

“It’s been a difficult decision, because the collaborations — with the cast, with my fellow-writers, with Nick Britell and Mark Mylod and the other directors — they’ve just been so good,” he continued. “And I feel like I’ve done the best work I can do, working with them. And HBO has been generous and would probably have done more seasons, and they have been nice about saying, it’s your decision. That’s nice, but it’s also a responsibility in the end. It feels quite perverse to stop doing it.”

Even casual followers are probably aware that Spanish superstar Rosalía and San Juan reggaetón don Rauw Alejandro are A) in love and B) eager to document that fact with constant evidence of their famous mouthal proximity. For two huge, touring artists, they seem to be together all the time, and now they’ve been able to pry themselves from each other long enough to record a joint collaboration. RR is a three-song EP that establishes their slinky vocal rapport and makes it official: The video for opening track “Beso,” an emo reggaetón love song, ceremoniously announces their betrothal—though close readers will observe this may have already happened circa summer 2022.

Romance is beautiful and all of that, and the couple’s harmonies are milk and honey on tracks about their undying devotion and also making out. But “Vampiros” sprinkles some welcome tropigoth sex-grime on their rose-petal-strewn bed, marking the triumphant return of la pistola made famous in Rosalía’s notorious desire lullaby “Hentai.” It’s a love song, but the pair trades horny, shouty bars about god and weed and the healing power of the moon, grinding through the night over a determined reggaetón thump and minimal synth skulk. “Vampiros sonando ahora pa’ siempre, somo’ inmortale’,” Rosalía sings assuredly. In contrast to “Beso” and the fairy-tale bolero “Promesa,” it reminds us that R and R aren’t just characters in an old-fashioned love story but also young, in love, and tryna go to the club.

One of the most difficult challenges of reviewing films is understanding a filmmaker’s vision. Sometimes one can find themselves in a difficult position of trying to write an objective review of something you don’t quite grasp. This is the dilemma I faced while reviewing Malcolm Carter’s independent drama, Company of Prophets.

The story focuses on Mala (Nakell Rashad), a former rapper who has been away from home for five years. After her father’s passing, her brother recommends Mala for a position at Careful Thoughts, which specializes in working with young homeless adults. She, however, doesn’t feel she’s qualified for the job, never having worked with kids, nor does she have kids of her own. Yet, despite her reluctance, Mala manages to get the position.

Kevin (Kris Marshall) becomes the first client with whom Mala works. His rapper moniker is “Tale of Two Cities.” He brings his girlfriend, Talia (Ashley Nief), to his first session with Mala, which takes place at her home. Kevin, however, has other plans when he tells Mala that he needs to get some partying out of his system before she can help him. Unfortunately, Mala isn’t keen on his friends, and Talia isn’t fond of her. Things turn around, however, when Talia discovers Mala is a rapper and goes to her for her advice. As Mala gets to know the group, she learns more about them and herself, complicating everything.

“…Talia discovers Mala is a rapper and goes to her for her advice.”

Company of Prophets left me scratching my head at some of its odd choices. Most puzzling was the color grading. The entire picture is blue. However, depending on the scene, there’s a gray, green, or red tone. Interestingly, or confusingly, the trailer does not contain these color filters and has the correct tone and palette. I mentioned before how a critic’s job is to understand and interpret a filmmaker’s vision. I’m sure Carter has an artistic reasoning behind this, but it cannot be figured out within the context of the film itself. This discrepancy made the decision even more strange. It is distracting and doesn’t add to the narrative. If the film had established itself with straightforward coloring and then cut to scenes of a different tone, it would’ve helped.

Aside from the coloring, the story goes in multiple directions, not settling on one piece. The narrative starts with Mala finding a new path in life, but it quickly veers away from that. The house party, for example, has multiple interludes with characters either having banal conversations or arguing. It takes up to twenty minutes of the 101-minute runtime, bringing the momentum to a halt. After a while, it meanders to the point where you’re unsure whose story it is and how it’ll all come together. There is a subplot towards the last quarter involving Mala and Talia, which is when things get interesting. But it takes so many detours to reach that point it’s too late.

It’s always disappointing when a film’s intention goes over one’s head. Writer/director Malcolm Carter had an evident purpose behind his choices. Company of Prophets could have benefited from letting the audience in on the meaning to understand the vision.

Staying cordial for the kids? Amid Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis’ ongoing custody battle, the pair put on a united front at their son Otis’ soccer game.

The Booksmart director, 39, and the Ted Lasso star, 47, were all smiles as they greeted one another outside their son’s soccer game on Saturday, March 25, according to pics obtained by TMZ. Wilde sported a pair of jeans and a brown cardigan, while the Saturday Night Live alum opted for a beige fleece, navy trousers and a maroon baseball cap. The twosome, who called off their engagement in 2020, were photographed hugging upon their arrival before sitting together in the stands.

Wilde and the Kansas native — who share Otis, 8, and daughter Daisy, 6 — were first linked in 2011, getting engaged nearly two years later. The pair ultimately split amid the coronavirus pandemic, shortly before the O.C. alum sparked a romance with her Don’t Worry Darling leading man, Harry Styles.

“The complete horses–t idea that I left Jason for Harry is completely inaccurate,” Wilde told Vanity Fair in September 2022, denying claims that she ended her engagement to be with the former One Direction member, 29. “Our relationship was over long before I met Harry. Like any relationship that ends, it doesn’t end overnight. Unfortunately, Jason and I had a very bumpy road, and we officially dissolved the relationship towards the beginning of the pandemic.”

The pair’s coparenting relationship also took a turn for the worse in April 2022 when Sudeikis publicly served Wilde with custody paperwork during her appearance at CinemaCon. The Tron: Legacy actress — who split from Styles the following November — later alleged that her former fiancé had attempted to humiliate her by serving her during a public work event. Sudeikis, however, denied intentionally serving her during the panel.

Wilde later claimed that the Mother’s Day actor had acted with “underhandedness” and “bad faith” when it comes to deciding Otis and Daisy’s future, per a new court filing obtained by the Daily Mail earlier this month.

“Jason should not be permitted to litigate Olivia into debt, and then claim she should be deprived of her right to seek a needs-based fee contribution from him,” Wilde’s legal team wrote in the March court documents. “While the details of Jason’s finances are presently unknown as he refused to substantively respond to basic discovery, she is aware that he is far wealthier than she is.”

The pair had a court hearing for the ongoing custody dispute on Friday, March 24, in which the judge rejected Sudeikis’ request to move the case from Los Angeles to New York despite Wilde’s objections.

Digital World Acquisition Corp., the blank-check company that has proposed merging with Donald Trump’s media company, said it fired chairman and CEO Patrick Orlando.

On March 19, the company’s board of directors terminated Orlando from his positions as chairman and CEO, DWAC disclosed in an SEC filing Wednesday. Orlando remains a director of the company.

“Due to the unprecedented headwinds faced by the company, the board agreed it was in the best interest of its shareholders to select a new management team to execute an orderly succession plan and set strategic operating procedures for the company in this new phase,” DWAC said in a statement. “Mr. Orlando’s departure enables the board to appoint new leadership, which it believes will restore confidence to the shareholders.”

Trump Media & Technology Group previously announced plans to combine with DWAC, a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), to become a publicly traded entity. The deal would provide TMTG with up to $1.3 billion in capital, according DWAC filings.

DWAC didn’t elaborate on the “unprecedented headwinds” it cited for terminating Orlando. The proposed merger with Trump Media was delayed after DWAC disclosed that the agreement was being probed by the SEC. Subsequently, DWAC also disclosed that it had received subpoenas in a federal grand jury investigation in the U.S. Justice Department’s Southern District of New York seeking information on its financial dealings in connection with the proposed TMTG deal. Last week, the Guardian reported that federal prosecutors had investigated $8 million in payments to Trump Media, loans that allegedly had been arranged by Orlando, for potential money-laundering violations.

Meanwhile, Trump is the subject of a separate federal grand jury proceeding in Manhattan that is investigating the ex-president’s role in a hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels just prior to the 2016 presidential election. That could result in Trump’s indictment and arrest.

Trump Media & Technology Group, led by CEO Devin Nunes, operates Truth Social, which is now the former president’s preferred social media platform.

In announcing Orlando’s termination, Miami-based DWAC said board member Eric Swider has been appointed interim CEO effective immediately. Swider has served on DWAC’s board since September 2021. He has been serving as CEO of Rubidex since January 2020, a software development start-up focused on data security. Swider is the founder of Renatus Advisors, which “works with private clients to resolve complex strategic and operational matters as well as public clients, providing services related to disaster and economic recovery.”

“Succession” is back at long last. The fourth and final season of the lauded HBO series is kicking off Sunday night, but given the copious amounts of backstabbing, undercutting and verbal sparring that’s gone on throughout the show’s first three seasons, you’d be forgiven for forgetting exactly where things left off when we last caught up with the Roy family. That’s where we come in.

Ahead of “Succession” Season 4, we’ve got a recap of key plot points you’ll need to remember from Season 3 – specifically from that jaw-dropping finale – to make sure you’re primed for the latest (and last) round of power struggles. As Tom and Greg so pointedly put it, “We hear for you.”

Logan Is Selling Waystar to GoJo, and He’s Cutting the Kids Out

While Season 3 found Logan (Brian Cox) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) courting tech company GoJo for an acquisition, the finale turned the tables as GoJo CEO Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard) proposed GoJo acquiring Waystar and positioning himself as the one to take over the company. He promised he would “rate” each of Logan’s kids fairly, and keep those who were up to snuff.

Logan then began negotiations to accept Matsson’s offer, keeping the kids out of it, which of course rankled Shiv (Sarah Snook), Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman who would no longer be in line to take over. The finale ended with the kids coming after Logan, attempting to put a stop to his sale of Waystar and cut him out once and for all (they even planned a media blitz that would publicly declare Logan’s health was failing), but Logan once again had the upper hand – he quietly assumed even greater control over the company’s decisions. After being confronted in the finale’s final moments, he cut Shiv, Kendall and Roman out of Waystar for good.

Tom and Greg Are Aligned… With Logan

While the Season 3 finale saw Shiv call Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) to ready him for the kids’ takeover, Tom saw an opportunity and tipped Logan off, thus allowing him to cut the kids out of the deal. Instead of aligning with Shiv, Tom brought Greg (Nicholas Braun) into his plan, positioning the two of them to be high-level lieutenants for Logan in a Kendall/Roman/Shiv-less Waystar.

Shiv and Tom’s Marriage Is Falling Apart

Why would Tom align with Greg over his wife? Besides the fact that Tom and Greg are #couplegoals, Tom’s decision to go behind Shiv’s back paid off something that’s been a long time coming – the dissolution of their marriage. After being constantly sidelined by Shiv, and after Shiv essentially confessed to not loving Tom in a “game” of dirty talk, Tom stopped leading with his heart and made a move to get out from under her thumb and put himself on top. The Season 3 finale closed out with the image of a shocked Shiv seated, while Tom put a “comforting” hand on her shoulder, standing tall.

Kendall Is Back in the Saddle

Kendall has been struggling ever since he was involved in the young waiter’s death at the end of Season 1, and Season 3 especially saw him in a really rough mental state. But after confessing his deepest, darkest secret to his siblings and getting empathy in return, we saw the old, go-getter Kendall return in the final moments of the Season 3 finale. That seems to be continuing in Season 4, so sad dog Kendall is no more. For now…

Connor and Willa Are Engaged, and Connor’s Running for President

Connor (Alan Ruck), meanwhile, managed to convince girlfriend Willa (Justine Lupe) to marry him in the Season 3 finale – although she seemed to immediately regret her decision. As ever, their relationship is more transactional for her, but more important than ever as Connor is in the thick of a presidential race he has no actual chance of winning.

And that’s all, folks! Tune into the “Succession” Season 4 premiere on Sunday, March 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and 6 p.m. PT on HBO Max.

Adele will add 34 dates to her Las Vegas residency, starting June 16-17 and completed by Nov. 4. Additionally, a live concert film of the residency is planned.

The new dates were announced this morning, just after the first “Weekends with Adele” residency series ended Saturday night.

Adele tipped this morning’s announcement to the Saturday night audience.

“Playing to 4,000 people for 34 dates is not enough, and I know that,” she told her audience. “So I am coming back for a few weeks in June, and I’m going to release it to make sure anyone who wants to see this show can see it.”

Presale tickets for the second residency shows will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific time April 5. Fans will receive a code to purchase tickets. If demand for tickets from Verified Fans exceeds supply, there will not be a public on-sale.

Adele’s first “Weekends with Adele” run started in November 2022 and covered 34 shows through Saturday night. The residency was delayed at the last minute from its anticipated spring debut, spawning controversy over its staging and Adele’s role in the cancellation. But Adele didn’t miss a date once the run started, and every show sold out.

A series of new photos revealed a first look at the controversial new MCU superhero, Sabra.

The Jewish hero is set to make her Marvel Studios debut in Captain America: New World Order, which is due out in theaters next year.

At last year’s D23 Fan Expo, Sabra was revealed to be coming to the super-powered franchise, with Israeli actress Shira Haas taking on the role. The announcement of Sabra’s inclusion in Captain America 4 was quick to draw controversy, as Marvel Studios ventured into the touchy political arena of the Israel/Palestine conflict, with the traditionally Israeli comic book hero.

This viral outcry caused the Hollywood giant to issue a statement in the New York Times, revealing that it was “taking a new approach” with the MCU’s Sabra, reimagining the character for “today’s audience.”

A Sneak Peak Captain America 4’s Sabra

Shira Haas

A new set photo from the production of Captain America: New World Order captured a first glimpse at Shira Haas’s take on the Jewish Marvel hero Sabra.

As posted online , the image see the actress leaving what looks to be a diner, followed by Anthony Mackie‘s Sam Wilson and Danny Ramirez‘s Joaquín Torres.

Haas is wearing an overcoat to hide her Sabra costume, although glimpses of her character’s brown pants, tactical boots, and black gloves

Not much else can be gleaned from these set photos, other than the location looks awfully similar to the Smyth Diner that was seen earlier in production.

It is currently known if Haas will don Sabra’s iconic winged costume in Captain America 4 sequel, but if she does it will very likely be with an updated look.

Sabra Marvel
Marvel Comics

Who is Sabra in the MCU?

For those who may not know, Sabra has been a part of the Marvel Comics canon for more than 40 years at this point.

She will not only be the first Jewish Marvel hero to hit the MCU, but she also joins the ranks of Kamala Kahn and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Namor as one of the first mutants to pop up in the franchise.

While the character’s Israeli heritage brings along with it a delicate political tightrope for Marvel Studios to walk, there is a way that that could play perfectly into the plot of Captain America: New World Order.

The Captain America franchise has always come with a political-thriller bend. So if the MCU wanted to take a deep look at the turmoil Sabra’s home nation has found itself in for the better part of a century.

Yes, Sabra’s inclusion will require a steady hand on the part of Marvel Studios, but the studio seems to be making the right decisions when it comes to anything involved with the hero. Shira Haas is an Isreali-born actress, so she can bring a perspective to the role that will be needed in a modern take on the longtime Marvel Hero.

Sabra, along with the rest of the Captain America: New World Order cast, can be seen when the film hits theaters on May 3, 2024.

The Arrowverse marked a before and after in DC Comics television franchises. The CW, Marc Guggenheim, and Greg Berlanti established a strong universe featuring characters from the company, connecting stories and creating incredible crossovers.

However, as the years went by and the superhero genre exploded in theaters, enthusiasm for the Arrowverse faded, especially as the quality of the shows did as well. Beyond that, they managed to do what few had done on the big screen, adapting some of the most popular story arcs on pages like Flashpoint and Crisis on Infinite Earths.

With the end of Arrow in 2020, the universe began to fall apart little by little, primarily due to the network crisis and Warner Discovery. After that, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and Black Lightning also fell into oblivion until only The Flash and Superman & Lois were left standing. However, the latter is no longer considered part of the Arrowverse.

The arrival of Peter Safran and James Gunn at DC Studios, a division that will organize all projects related to the brand, whether in film, television, video games, or animation, poses a new future for the franchise. And not everyone seems to be happy with that.

Marc Guggenheim Feels Like He Wasted His Time

Through its newsletter(via Deadline), Arrowverse co-creator Marc Guggenheim wrote upset about Gunn and Safran’s lack of interest in the work being done in the Arrowverse:

“Not a job, mind you. A meeting. A conversation. A small recognition of what I’d tried to contribute to the grand tapestry that is the DC Universe. I’d only spent nine years toiling in that vineyard, after all. Although working for DC had been creatively fulfilling, it involved a lot of adversity, challenges, and personal sacrifices — none of which seem to have accrued to any professional benefit. Simply put, the Arrowverse hasn’t led to any other gigs, so it feels — at least on a career level — that I really wasted my time.”

Since his arrival as Co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn has contacted some of the workers of the old administration and talked with different actors who have gone through DC, like Henry Cavill or Dwayne Johnson. He has even reportedly offered projects to people like Ben Affleck, although as a director and not as an actor. So it’s a real surprise that he hasn’t reached out to the minds behind the Arrowverse to at least have a chat.

The new DCU is only just getting started, though, and there’s still plenty of time for old acquaintances and new talent to arrive to help shape it, both in front of and behind the cameras.

The Arrowverse marked a before and after

World class climber Jimmy Chin met his future wife, filmmaker Chai Vasarhelyi, over a mountain – of footage.

He had been working for a number of years on the documentary that would become Meru, the story of an attempt by Chin and his fellow alpinists and friends Conrad Anker and Renan Ozturk to become the first to summit the perilous Shark’s Fin peak in the Himalayas. Perhaps because he was so close to the subject matter, the film wasn’t quite cohering.

“I had submitted it to a few film festivals and got turned down,” Chin explained during an Artists & Auteurs conversation at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen. He told moderator Thom Powers, TIFF’s documentary programmer and host of the Pure Nonfiction podcast, that while struggling over the film he crossed paths with Vasarhelyi at a conference.

“I knew that she had quite an accomplished career as a filmmaker,” Chin said. “So, I asked her to screen what I had cut so far. She didn’t call me back for three months, but it was because she was in Senegal making another film. But then she came back, she screened it, she called me, said, what are you doing with this film?”

They bonded on a project that teemed with stunning footage shot by Chin and Ozturk.

“Just seeing the world through Jimmy’s lens was astonishing, and it was inspiring,” Vasarhelyi said. “And just understanding this very deep connection to the outside world, and also [it was] kind of the first time I had access as a viewer to these incredibly remote places in such a visceral way.”

Feelings of a deeper sort soon kindled between the cinematic collaborators.

“Jimmy and I began kind of falling in love in this process,” Vasarhelyi said. “But the main thing for me was I love Jimmy and was falling in love, and I wanted to help tell the absolute best version of his story.”

If Chin elevated the story – literally to 20,000 feet – what Vasarhelyi added was depth, turning what could remain a niche mountaineering tale into one about characters, three men and their emotional journey, not just their ascent.

“The question was whether these three mountain climbers would show up emotionally. And I think there was a magic in the idea that Jimmy and I were becoming permanently attached, like probably getting married, having a child,” she said. “Conrad and Renan really showed up. I remember Conrad sat for a seven-hour interview and cried. It all came [out] and so we knew we had a movie because they were able to reflect and speak in a way that civilians could understand.”

Vasarhelyi and Chin’s latest documentary, Wild Life, which they brought to CPH:DOX, also unfolds in gorgeous mountainous terrain, in remote sections of Chile and Argentina. But at heart it too is a love story, between Doug Tompkins and Kris Tompkins, both enormously accomplished people who became a couple later in life.

“Doug Tompkins had led this very successful business life and created two of the largest brands on Earth, The North Face and then Esprit,” Vasarahelyi told Deadline at SXSW, where Wild Life played before heading to Copenhagen. “But then he had this awakening and said, ‘This is not enough. It’s not what I want to do.’ And then he leaves everything behind to go to Patagonia [Chile]. And then likewise with Kris, she was the founding CEO of the Patagonia company, and she ran it for 20 years. And then she too was like, ‘This is not my life. This is not where it can end. I don’t want it to end here.’” And she found the love of her life [Doug Tompkins] in her 40s. So, I think there’s something about this regeneration that really moved me.”

The Tompkins created a life together in Chile. They could have followed the example of other wealthy people and gobbled up lots of land for themselves to enjoy privately, but instead, as the film shows, they acquired millions of acres of wilderness in Chile and Argentina with the express purpose of giving it back to those countries to create national parks.

“This love story is about falling in love with this landscape of Patagonia and the lengths that they were willing to go to try and save this place that they loved,” Chin told us at SXSW. “That story to me was deeply personal and also hugely inspiring. So, that’s a big part of why we wanted to make this film, why we think it’s important, why we think it’s timely, because we’re at this moment where climate change is one of our biggest existential crises, and here’s a few people that have been able to enact such massive change around preserving the environment.”

Chin added, “What they achieved in conservation is something that we’ve never seen before, the biggest private land donation in the history of mankind.”

Chin and Vasarhelyi won the Academy Award for their 2018 film Free Solo, about climber Alex Honnold, who shimmied and scraped and clawed his way up the sheer 3,000-foot granite face of Yosemite’s El Capitan without use of ropes. The Rescue, from 2021, documented the miraculous rescue of Thai children who were trapped in a flooded cave (The Rescue, Free Solo and Wild Life are all National Geographic films; Meru was distributed by Music Box Films).

“It’s been very fulfilling to have this wonderful material with which to access this kind of elusive human potential, like warts and all,” Vasarhelyi said at the Artists & Auteurs talk. “In Free Solo, Alex had this audacious dream to climb El Capitan without a rope, but what was scarier for him was to talk to other people. And then, suddenly, in the film, he ends up falling in love and actually evolving emotionally, which has very little to do with his climb itself. So, they’re adventure films, but I think they’re also lenses to look at this fascinating edge that is pretty hopeful too, in that most of these stories we tell are about people who dare to dream and with determination and grit and a little help from their friends… achieve their dreams.”

Wild Life will be released by Picturehouse in theaters beginning April 14, with a broadcast debut on National Geographic Channel set for May 25, followed the day after by a launch on Disney+.

The wreck of Endurance on the bottom of the Weddell Sea.

Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust/National Geographic

As Deadline reported exclusively earlier this week, Vasarhelyi and Chin are already at work on their next project, also for National Geographic, directing a documentary under the working title Endurance. The film, co-directed by Natalie Hewit, will tell the remarkable story of how a team of marine explorers found the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackelton’s ship Endurance at the bottom of the Weddell Sea near Antarctica. The vessel sank after becoming stuck in sea ice in 1915 and was only discovered, intact on the ocean floor, last March.

Several years ago, Vasarhelyi and Chin embarked on a different kind of adventure – parenting. The couple brought their two kids to Copenhagen, where they decided to partake in a brisk Danish tradition – leaping into the icy river for an invigorating dip. That frigid plunge may seem tame compared to the expeditions Chin still undertakes in mountainous territories around the world as a professional climber and skier for The North Face Athlete team.

For Vasarhelyi, who describes herself as very much not a climber, worry is never far from her mind about the danger her husband faces on such extreme adventures.

“There is an argument that could be made that between Free Solo, The Rescue and even Wild Life, I’ve been trying to negotiate my feelings about risk and trying to understand as best I can, because we’ve committed to this life together. We have two wonderful kids,” she said. “I’m having an active, I don’t know, wrestling match inside me. And we’ve been talking about these questions a lot because you are more likely to die above 8,000 meters than you are under 8,000 meters. Like, this is a risky endeavor, even if you’re the best. But I’m not one to say, ‘You can’t,’ because certain individuals, this is what they live for. And we’ve spent some time looking at that question.”

While everyone was wondering if Selena Gomez and Zayn Malik were really seen making out at a restaurant in New York City, Harry Styles and Emily Ratajkowski left little for DeuxMoi to speculate about.

In full view of witnesses, Styles and Ratajkowski were spotted getting really comfortable with one another in Tokyo, Japan on March 25. Leaning up against a silver van with her hand clasped in his, the 29-year-old pop star and 31-year-old model can be seen kissing and smiling in the photos and video obtained by The Daily Mail.

Styles, who was in Japan for his latest Love on Tour performances, wore a white button-up shirt, black pants, and a matching jacket, while Ratajkowski wore a pink and black cropped puffer jacket with a black skirt. According to the publication, the pair also got up to a little dancing while waiting out the rain. (You can view the photos and video here.)

The only question left unanswered is whether or not we’re looking at a one-off date night or Hollywood’s next pro-PDA power couple. According to People, a rep for Harry Styles had “no comment” when reached by the publication, while they’re still waiting to hear back from team Ratajkowski.

Both Emily Ratajkowski and Harry Styles are moving on from high-profile relationships. Just one year after welcoming her son, Sylvester Apollo Bear, Ratajkowski ended her four-year marriage to Sebastian Bear-McClard in the summer of 2022 following a wave of cheating rumors. “I had just had a child, so I really wanted to have that family, so it was especially hard for me to totally walk away,” she said during a recent appearance on the Going Mental podcast with Eileen Kelly, per InStyle. “I didn’t have the courage to leave for a long time. I was really, really unhappy.”

Meanwhile, Harry Styles was linked to his Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde for two years before the pair reportedly decided to take a break in November 2022. “He’s still touring and is now going abroad. She is focusing on her kids and her work in LA,” one source told People at the time, while another said Wilde was “disappointed” by the split.

Coming off of a banner year of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie performances, this round of Emmy contenders more so face the challenge of making sure voters give their shows a chance.

We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2023 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, with an edited presentation of the ceremonies to be broadcast on FXX at a later date. Finally, the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Monday, September 18, and air live on FOX at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

It really is not as easy as it was last year to peg who the frontrunners are for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie. Yes, Jessica Chastain just won a Screen Actors Guild award for her turn as country star Tammy Wynette in Showtime’s “George and Tammy,” but that took a lot of effort on her part to appear at as many FYC screenings as possible to support the show even as she was readying her grand return to Broadway in a revival of “A Doll’s House.”

That really is what it comes down to; if one’s show was not whatever version we have of a watercooler series now, how do the creators, stars, and awards strategists make sure voters go watch it. Currently, Dominique Fishback’s performance in the Donald Glover-produced “Swarm” is making waves on social media, but may have trouble reaching the old crowd that is the TV Academy members. Amber Midthunder really did get a breakout moment last summer with “Prey,” but the Emmys just don’t embrace TV movies like they used to, and being nominated for a straight-up action role is not easy either.

One contender to watch is Emily Blunt in the Amazon Prime Video revenge western “The English,” which feeds into some of those similar hang-ups, but has really positioned itself as a fun discovery, giving voters a chance to tell their peers about how it’s one good show they probably missed. Though the series did not exactly take the world by storm last November, Blunt still was nominated at several winter awards shows, including the SAG Awards.

There is plenty more to come though, from “Great Expectations” on FX to “The Last Thing He Told Me” on Apple TV+, but another fun possibility is “WandaVision” co-stars Elizabeth Olsen and Kathryn Hahn both following up the success of their Marvel Cinematic Universe series with more Emmy nominations, now for their respective, engaging turns in the limited series “Love and Death” (HBO Max) and “Tiny Beautiful Things” (Hulu).

Current Contenders (In Alphabetical Order):
Emily Blunt, “The English” (Amazon Prime Video)
Shalom Brune-Franklin, “Great Expectations” (FX)
Lizzy Caplan, “Fleishman Is in Trouble” (FX)
Jessica Chastain, “George and Tammy” (Showtime)
Vera Farmiga, “Five Days at Memorial” (Apple TV+)
Dominique Fishback, “Swarm” (Amazon Prime Video)

Kathryn Hahn, “Tiny Beautiful Things” (Hulu)
Riley Keough, “Daisy Jones and the Six” (Amazon Prime Video)
Amber Midthunder, “Prey” (Hulu)
Elizabeth Olsen, “Love and Death” (HBO Max)
Bel Powley, “A Small Light” (National Geographic)

Oklahoma City’s Chat Pile have announced a new split EP with Kansas City’s Nerver. The four-song release is called Brothers in Christ, and it comes out April 14 (via Reptilian/The Ghost Is Clear). The first offering from the EP is Chat Pile’s “Cut,” which vocalist Raygun Busch said was inspired by Stephen King. Hear it below.

“‘Cut’ is an homage to the short fiction of King,” Busch explained, “particularly ‘The Man Who Loved Flowers,’ ‘Strawberry Spring,’ and ‘The Jaunt.’”

Chat Pile bassist Stin added, “These tracks were written and recorded after we tracked God’s Country.” He continued, “We wanted to use this release as a deliberate excuse to switch gears and fully lean into our more indie and alt-rock tendencies. Slint, Sonic Youth, Guided by Voices, and Starfish’s Stellar Sonic Solutions were certainly on our minds at the time.”

The top Dox:Award at CPH:DOX, the Copenhagen documentary festival, has gone to “Motherland” by Ukrainian-Belarusian director Alexander Mihalkovich (“My Granny From Mars”) and Ukrainian director Hanna Badziaka.

Described by Variety as “an ominous portrait of the oppressive culture of cruelty in post-Soviet Belarus,” the film follows Svetlana, whose son died during his military service as the result of violent abuse, in her quest to expose and prosecute those responsible for his death.

Dedicating the award to “all the Ukrainians fighting Russian aggression and to Belarusian political prisoners,” the directing duo thanked all those who helped them make the film, in particular the protagonists, “who were brave to stand in front of the camera and patient with us as it was a long journey of four years.”

Handing out the prize, the jury said: “This was such a cinematic and meaningful film that took its time unfolding the complexity of living within an oppressive and unjust system. It poses questions about the idea of an individual choice within a cornered society. The title of the film is a way to give back the power to the women who are at the forefront of this fight.”

“Motherland” was one of 13 films, all world premieres, competing for the main prize at this 20th edition.

Celebrating the anniversary, the festival’s artistic director Niklas Engstrøm emerged from a large cardboard cake on stage, drawing cheers and laughter from the crowd gathered in Copenhagen’s Kunsthal Charlottenborg, one of the largest exhibition spaces for contemporary art in Northern Europe, which traditionally turns into the CPH:DOX headquarters.

The Dox:Award runner-up was “On the Edge” (“État Limite”) by France’s Nicolas Peduzzi (“Southern Belle,” “Ghost Song”), “a film that gripped us, and took us on a journey through the labyrinth of a human mind,” said the jury. It tells the story of a young doctor with a humanist spirit who fights a daily battle to hold together the run-down Paris hospital where he works.

The F:act Award, dedicated to political and journalistic films and sponsored by the NGO International Media Support (IMS) and the Danish Union of Journalists, went to Berlin winner “Seven Winters in Tehran,” German director Steffi Niederzoll’s debut feature.

It retraces the life of Reyhaneh Jabbari, a young Iranian woman who was sentenced to death after fatally stabbing the man who was trying to rape her, and is voiced by “Holy Spider” actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi.

“The Hostage Takers” by Puk Damsgaard and Søren Klovborg, a hostage drama based on a shocking interview with two life-sentenced British ISIS members, was awarded a special mention.

“Mrs. Hansen & the Bad Companions” by Denmark’s Jella Bethmann picked up the Nordic:Dox Award for Nordic documentaries. Special Mention went to “Lynx Man” by Finland’s Juha Suonpää (“Wolfman,” “Vuores”).

The New:Vision Award, which celebrates experimental and artists’ films, went to “An Asian Ghost Story” by Bo Wang. A double special mention went to “The Secret Garden” by Nour Ouayda and “Pacific Club” by Valentin Noujaïm.

The Next:Wave Award for emerging filmmakers was handed out to “Queendom” by Agniia Galdanova (“One Step Forward, One Step Back”), a 2022 CPH:Forum pitch project. It tells the story of Gena, a queer artist from a small town in Russia, who dresses in otherworldly costumes made from junk and tape, and protests the government on the streets of Moscow.

“The Last Year of Darkness” by Benjamin Mullinkosson, which takes viewers inside China’s underground partying scene, received a special mention.

IDFA winner “Apolonia, Apolonia,” in which Danish docmaker Lea Glob follows up-and-coming French painter Apolonia Sokol over the course of 13 years, won the Politiken:DOX Award, sponsored by the Politiken Foundation of leading Danish newspaper Politiken.

Special Mention went to “The Mountains” by Denmark’s Christian Einshøj, described as “a young director’s brave film about his family and two adult brothers as they try to break the ice and delve into the family’s past to finally reach each other.”

The awards wrap up the 20th edition of a festival, which will have seen a whopping 180 live events organized around films in and around Copenhagen, drawing the likes Joan Baez and Wim Wenders, and no fewer than 600 screenings in venues across the Danish capital.

The 20th edition of CPH:DOX runs in Copenhagen until March 26.

Insolvency trustee Doug Hoyes encounters a lot of Canadians with money troubles, but he’s become particularly sympathetic to the plight of young people who find themselves financially underwater.

For more than a decade, his Ontario-based firm Hoyes Michalos has been crunching bankruptcy and insolvency numbers for its annual “Joe Debtor” analysis, with its latest results released last month ahead of tax season.

Canadian consumer debt climbs 7.3% to $2.36 trillion in third quarter: Equifax

He’s concluded that millennial Canadians have been dealt a generational losing hand as they face student loans layered with bad debts from credit cards, high-interest loans, and post-pandemic tax debt from collecting CERB.

“I think there’s a whole bunch of whammies that have hit millennials.” Hoyes said. “The CERB was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Money Matters: Millennials taking on the most debt

The 2022 Joe Debtor study examined 2,700 personal insolvencies filed in Ontario. Hoyes Michalos says 49 per cent were filed by millennials aged 26 to 41, even though they make up 27 per cent of adult Canadians.

The study found that on a per-population basis, millennials were 1.4 times more likely to file for insolvency than people in generation X aged 42 to 56, and 1.7 times more likely than baby boomers aged 57 to 76.

Insolvent millennials were on average 33 years old and owed an average of $47,283 in unsecured debt.

Hoyes said many people collected CERB and other pandemic-relief funds without fully appreciating the tax liabilities those programs generated, finding themselves insolvent and unable to pay down their credit cards, student loans, high-interest loans, and lastly their tax debts.

More than 100,000 Canadians of all ages filed for bankruptcy or insolvency in 2022.

But older generations, Hoyes said, have enjoyed many advantages.

Housing prices were more in step with wages. Tuition fees didn’t necessitate student loans, allowing graduates to enter the workforce and start saving and investing out of the gate, rather than having to service large debts for years after completing their education.

Hoyes said those circumstances represented a “safety valve” that young people now can’t rely on.

“Anything goes wrong like a pandemic, or you lose your job or you get sick or you get divorced and boom, there is no safety valve there,” he said.

Filing for bankruptcy, he said, is an option to eliminate debts, but most people end up filing consumer proposals with the help of insolvency trustees like him to pay them down over time in manageable portions.

“It becomes an affordable way to eliminate the debt, and that’s why we’re seeing more and more millennials resorting to consumer proposals,” he said. “They really have no other choice.”

Sandra Fry, a Winnipeg-based credit counsellor with the non-profit Credit Counselling Society, said many young people who seek alternatives to insolvency and bankruptcy are dealing with the shock of rising interest rates.

“Unfortunately, a lot of people out there are living on the edge of their affordability,” Fry said.

Fry said the Credit Counselling Society sees all types of people struggling financially with rising costs that are “really squeezing Canadians in general from all sides.”

Dave Locke, 31, lives with his wife in Coquitlam, B.C., east of Vancouver, and the couple sought Fry’s help when their mortgage payments jumped dramatically in the middle of a costly renovation.

Locke, who works for a real estate brokerage, got into the housing market at a young age having worked in the oil and gas industry after high school.

He ended up buying a home in Coquitlam with his wife Tara, who works in labour relations, and the Bank of Canada’s rate hikes eventually saw their monthly mortgage payments jump 40 per cent.

The couple had a construction loan with their bank to fund the renovations, and as interest rates climbed and the price of construction materials ballooned, Locke realized something had to give, even with their relatively high combined incomes.

Insolvency or bankruptcy weren’t options for the couple because they wanted to keep their assets, but the Credit Counselling Society was able to work out a deal with their bank to eliminate interest on the renovation loan.

“I’m still paying the full balance,” Locke said. “I’m just not paying any additional interest.”

Locke said the stress and stigma of debt is embarrassing, “but it’s just the way it goes.”

“You have to kind of swallow your pride,” he said.

Grant Bazian, a licensed insolvency trustee and president of MNP Ltd. in Vancouver, said he’s seen many clients “keeping up with the Joneses,” but living beyond their means and getting stuck in a cycle of high interest debt from payday loans and credit cards, layered on top of “ridiculous” housing costs.

Bazian said there’s likely no “one magic bullet” to alleviate the debt woes of young people, many of whom are coming to see him racked with anxiety and other mental health issues.

For accountant Hoyes back in Ontario, putting out the firm’s Joe Debtor study every year is a way of letting people know they’re not alone and to remind them of legal options to start anew financially.

Hoyes said it would be a mistake to automatically blame millennials for their money trouble because “you cannot be blaming an entire generation for how the deck is stacked against them.”

Story continues below advertisement

“You don’t have to keep working two jobs for the next 20 years,” he said. “There are legal ways to eliminate a chunk of your debt, and yeah, it hurts your credit temporarily and it’s not something you want to do, but sometimes surgery is the answer.”

Global payments solution provider Checkout.com has unveiled a new debit card issuing service for businesses to tap into the lucrative embedded finance market.

Online travel, marketplaces, and digital banking are all said to have been pivotal to the explosion in embedded finance in recent years, according to Checkout.com CPO Meron Colbeci, who states that fintech and Big Tech are no longer alone in the revolution, and that the market is estimated to increase in value by 187% to $121 billion in Europe and the UK by 2029, and to $7.2 trillion globally by 2030.

Card issuing is designed to enable businesses to offer physical and virtual cards as they look to diversify revenue, unlocking financial service provision to strengthen their ecommerce portfolio.

Create your own debit card for businesses

Businesses can choose to create their own branded cards that stand out from others, including a variety of sustainable and recycled materials, or digital options that are compatible with wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The precise card type is entirely under the control of a business and can include debit and pre-paid cards for consumer and commercial uses. There are also single-use and multi-use options for further control.

Another benefit for businesses looking to issue their own card is the streamlining and enclosure of the customer journey within an ecosystem, which grocery shopping and meal planning app Jow’s co-founder, Antoine Maillard, claims has been transformative for the business.

This shift in control of course comes at a time when global banking is facing increasing pressure amid a lack of trust, as consumers seek to diversify where they store their money.

At launch, Checkout.com card issuing is available in the UK and European Economic Area, with other regions to follow in due course.

What’s funnier than one clown? How about two? Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is going to have some criminal company for “Folie à Deux,” with Lady Gaga joining the sequel for a role reported to be a spin on the Batman villain Harley Quinn. New photographs have emerged from the production, unveiling Gaga’s costume and make-up for the film.

The photographs appear to showcase a large crowd scene, with Gotham police officers escorting Gaga’s character into a government building. Extras dressed as protesters gather around the star, holding signs with messages such as “Free Joker,” “Justice 4 Joker,” “Joker Marry Me” and “No Justice Not Guilty Not Joking.” Among the crowd are a smattering of colorful wigs and clown masks, of course.

Gaga’s costume by Oscar-nominated Arianne Phillips cuts between the heightened sensibility of the comic book source material and the gnarly aesthetic of the first “Joker” film. While it has yet to be officially confirmed that Gaga is playing Harley Quinn, the scarlet jacket and diamond-print blouse certainly would suggest that, not to mention the romantic messaging among the protesters and the clown makeup on Gaga’s face.

Gotham/GC Images

This isn’t the first look at Gaga from the set of “Joker: Folie à Deux.” On Valentine’s Day, director Todd Phillips shared an image of Gaga and Phoenix locked in a romantic embrace. That official image was a tight close-up, while these new photographs feature a different look at Gaga’s character.

Phillips’ original “Joker” was a commercial smash, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. At the 2020 Academy Awards, the film earned two wins — Phoenix for best actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir for best original score — among a whopping 11 nominations. Speculation around a sequel quickly took hold.

Although the landscape of DC Comics has dramatically shifted in recent months, “Joker 2” has remained largely untouched by the newly formed DC Studios and its co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The “Joker” sequel will not play a role in the narrative continuity of other upcoming DC films.

Warner Bros. will release “Joker: Folie à Deux” in theaters Oct. 9, 2024.

Manoj Bajpaaye and Preity Zinta in Veer Zaara.

Manoj Bajpaaye shared that Yash Chopra had approached him and offered him the role in his cult film Veer Zaara.

Manoj Bajpaaye recently enthralled everyone with his role in the OTT family drama Gulmohar. While the actor has a slew of stellar films under his credit, both independent as well as mainstream, Manoj Bajpaaye’s first ever brush with a huge commercial production happened in Veer Zaara. The actor recently shared how that opportunity helped him to catch up with Shah Rukh Khan as well as be part of Yash Chopra’s film even if it was a cameo.

During a freewheeling conversation with Humans Of Bombay, the Gangs Of Wasseypur actor recalled, “No offence to him (Shah Rukh), but I did this film because Mr Yash Chopra called me up and requested me to be a part of it. He was a big fan of my performance in Pinjar and once he saw the film in Delhi with Lal Krishna Advani ji, Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, he was thoroughly impressed with my performance. That’s when he thought of offering me this role. It was a guest appearance; I was there only for four-five days. He treated me as good as anyone on the sets. I was welcomed so royally in that film family, the Veer Zaara family. I enjoyed every moment of shooting with Yash Chopra ji.”

He further added, “Shah Rukh, I have known for many years from my days in Delhi, so it was also a chance to catch up. Because we don’t meet up, we belong to two different kinds of films and filmmaking. So, it was a chance to catch up with him and also enjoy being on the sets of Mr Yash Chopra, who had been such a magnificent, successful mainstream director for so many years. We grew up watching his films! We used to chat for long, both Yash ji and me. He was very clear in telling me, ‘I don’t make films for an actor like you, so I don’t think I would have anything else in the future, but this is very good and it will be great if you agree to do it.’ He was such a humble man.”

Veer Zaara is considered to be one of the most iconic films of Yash Chopra. The cross-border love story earned widespread critical and commercial acclaim at the time of its release. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta in the lead roles.

New York City police responded to a 911 call from an apartment near West 22nd Street and 8th Avenue at about 11:14 a.m. and determined that Majors was involved in a “domestic dispute” with a 30-year-old woman, according to a police statement.

The woman, who told police she was assaulted, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries to her head and neck, and is in stable condition.

Police placed Majors, 33, in custody without incident, the statement said.

A representative for Majors denied any wrongdoing.

“He has done nothing wrong. We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up,” said Carrie Gordon, the representative.

In recent years, Majors’ career has taken off with a succession of highly acclaimed performances. His credits include “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” in 2019, Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” in 2020, his Emmy-nominated work in HBO’s horror series “Lovecraft Country” and Marvel’s “Loki” as He Who Remains. He also led the ensemble for Netflix’s all-Black western “The Harder They Fall” in 2021.

In two recent releases, Major stars as uber-villain Kang the Conqueror in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and as Michael B. Jordan’s adversary Damian “Dame” Anderson in “Creed III.”

The last new character reading order to be added to the Marvel Comics Guide is probably a bit of an unexpected one! Eric Masterson drops the Thor identity now that the real God of Thunder has returned. But when he finds he still has the power to transform into an Asgardian champion, he assumes the new Thunderstrike identity – taking the name from the enchanted mallet gifted to him by Odin.

Thunderstrike’s adventures would literally be short lived with Marvel culling many of their lower-tier titles in the ’90s as the comics boom began to decline. But his legacy lives on when a new Thunderstrike picks up the mallet.

The Marvel Comics Guide will continue on the new OMNIVERSE COMICS GUIDE site which is coming soon! Follow us on  INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK, TUMBLR & VERO or right here for more updates! Got any questions about the Omniverse or the Marvel Comics Guide in the meantime? Add them below! I’ll still be adding a few event guides on here before joining Eric Anthony on the new site…

After the release of Titans Season 4 Part 2 trailer, new details about the show’s crossover episode with Stargirl has been revealed by its director.

Although Stargirl was cancelled by The CW, Brec Bassinger’s titular DC heroine is still poised to return for one more adventure alongside the Titans.

Plot details of the crossover are still being kept under wraps, but it is expected to heavily feature Ryan Potter’s Beast Boy.

When Will Titans Crossover With Stargirl Premiere?

Titans director Eric Dean Stanton confirmed on Twitter that the show’s crossover episode with Stargirl will premiere on Thursday, April 20, on HBO Max.

Stanton also revealed that the episode is titled, “Dude Where’s My Gar?,” with the director saying that “there is so much bucket-listness” in the installment that could have been the title:

“Coming 4/20/23 the comic that made me want to be a storyteller! #Directorslife [‘Titans’] Final Season. “Dude, Where’s My Gar.”

There is so much bucket-listness in this episode that could have been the title.”

Bassinger previously confirmed the crossover by sharing a behind-the-scenes photo of herself alongside Ryan Potter, Stanton, and Stargirl producer Geoff Johns:

Twitter

As pointed out by @StargirlWiki, the crossover episode was supposed to be Episode 7, but this new move confirmed that it is now Episode 9.

Moreover, this is the first episode of Titans to be co-written by a cast member since Potter is one of the scribes.

How Stargirl Fits in Titans Season 4 (Theory)

Titans Season 4 Part 1’s ending was quite unfortunate for the team, with Mother Mayhem seemingly defeating the Titans. After the team vanished, Ryan Potter’s Gar aka Beast Boy was the only one left, with him being transported to the Red (a force that connects all living organisms within the universe).

Given that the crossover features Gar in a more prominent role, it’s possible that Brec Bassinger’s Stargirl will only meet the lone Titan member in the episode. While this is unfortunate, there is a potential explanation as to why this will happen.

Considering that Beast Boy was transported to the Red at the end of Season 4 Part 1, it’s possible that the installment would feature his escape from that dimension, leading to a trip to the Multiverse, specifically Stargirl’s Earth-2.

However, the downside to this theory is Stargirl or the Justice Society of America is not aware of Multiverse travel so it would be hard for Gar to return to his Earth.

Another possible way for Gar to return to reality would mean escaping from the Red accidentally transports him into Blue Valley (Stargirl’s town).

If this happens, this would mean that the Stargirl who will appear in Titans is a different version from The CW series. (The Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover established that Titans and Stargirl are set on different realities.)

It remains to be seen if Bassinger’s Stargirl will have a brief role in the upcoming crossover, but seeing her return is already a win for fans.

Titans Season 4 Part 2 is set to premiere with a two-episode slate on HBO Max on Thursday, April 13.

In 2020, Epic Games publicly for the first time. Nearly three years later, gamers are still waiting for the tech to go mainstream. Outside of and , there aren’t any UE5 games you can play right now, and the first salvo probably won’t arrive until the end of the year at the earliest. None of that stopped Epic from showcasing the engine’s latest capabilities with a handful of new demos during its recent at GDC 2023.

Arguably the most impressive one saw Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 developer Ninja Theory show off Epic’s new . The tool promises to make realistic facial capture accessible to indie developers by allowing them to use an iPhone, instead of dedicated equipment, to capture facial performances. As you can see from the two demos Epic shared, the tool makes it possible to quickly and accurately transform a closeup video of an actor into something a studio can use in-game. Epic said the animator would launch this summer.

Separately, Epic showed off some of the enhancements coming to Unreal Engine 5.2 with a demo that featured, of all things, a digital recreation of electric truck. The EV turned out to be the perfect showcase for UE 5’s new Substrate shading system. The technology allows artists to create different shading models and layer them as they see fit. In the demo, Epic gave the R1T an opal body to show how Substrate can allow different material layers to interact with one another without creating lighting artifacts. The demo was also a showcase for Epic’s new set of Procedural Content Generation tools. They allow artists to create expansive, highly detailed levels from a small set of hand-crafted assets.

If all goes according to plan, it won’t be much longer before the first slate of Unreal Engine 5 games arrive. Provided it’s not delayed again,  is slated to release this year. Lords of the Fallen and , two other UE5 projects, don’t have a release date yet but have been in development for a few years now.

For writers of hardboiled fiction, the private eye could act as a conduit, an unmoored guide moving freely across social ranks and situations. For director Nima Javidi – whose new series “The Actor” is the first Iranian production to premiere in competition at Series Mania – the thespian might play a similar role.

“Shakespeare said that all the world’s a stage,” Javidi tells Variety. “And that all the men and women are merely players, assuming different roles depending on their situations and what they want to achieve. I thought it was fascinating [to put performers in those private detective roles and have them], overcome obstacles, solve problems, and save themselves and others from difficulties by using their acting abilities.”

Led by Venice best actor winner Navid Mohammadzadeh (who recently anchored Saeed Roustayi’s Cannes-acclaimed “Leila’s Brothers”), “The Actor” follows Ali (Mohammadzadeh) and Morteza (Ahmad Mehranfar), two down-and-out performers with little to their names but a derelict theater for which they can barely make rent. Still looking to practice their chosen trade, the performing pair stage elaborate, costumed pranks, mostly paid for by Teheran’s rich-kid set. That is, until the duo catch the attention of a shadowy private firm that uses improv artists as investigators.

“This kind of role-playing in real life could expand forever, assuming so many different forms,” Javidi explains. “Unlike Sherlock Holmes, who uses his intelligence, or superheroes, who save people with their incredible strength, [Ali and Morteza] resolve their obstacles and accomplish their adventures by exercising their art. They act to save themselves and others from difficulties.”

Forging an intriguing mix of serial and procedural, and with a season order of 26 episodes, “The Actor” moves at a beguiling and deliberate pace, keeping viewers on-edge with an ever shifting tonal register. Like a scene partner — another “Yes And” party accompanying the two leads in bouts of make-believe — the series’ very style accentuates the roleplaying, extending notes of dread or humor or harrowing tension into one of the duo’s staged scenario, pushing forward more on mood than narrative all the way through.

“We’ve fallen into an abyss of repetition,” says Javidi, who came up from Iran’s auteurist filmmaking sector. “At least in terms of Iranian series production. So I think this series will offer audiences a new taste – to offer them something fresh and unique.”

Working with cinematographer Morteza Najafi, among others, Javidi bathes his series in a dim and moody glow that calls to mind Gordon Willis’ work on “The Godfather,” lending “The Actor” a broody visual grandeur that often cuts against the characters’ ridiculous antics as they try to evade creditors or pull cheap scams for paltry sums or enact elaborate real-world sketches. Careening headfirst into the staged reality of any new scenario, “The Actor” often plays as a valentine to make-believe.

“I take inspiration from the stage, from the actors themselves, and from the situations in which I find myself,” says Javidi. “The [further we go] the more we realize that all the characters are playing roles, and in my opinion, this is completely derived from reality. Now this story might be a bit more exaggerated than others, but in truth, everyone on this planet is playing a role.”

Florence Pugh proved she isn’t afraid to take some scissors to her own hair for a role.

The Don’t Worry Darling star told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that “it was my idea” to cut off her actual hair for Zach Braff’s A Good Person. At the beginning of the film, which follows Pugh’s Allison as she forms an unlikely friendship with her would-be father-in-law, Daniel (Morgan Freeman) after surviving an unimaginable tragedy, her character impulsively chops off her hair.

“I was like, ‘Zach, I think I should chop my hair off at the beginning of the movie.’ And he was like, ‘The beginning of the movie – cool. That’s not gonna work,’” she explained.

Pugh said the crew was worried about how to shoot the film in order if she cuts her hair at the beginning of filming. Her response to that was, “You’ll figure it out.”

She added that the team had a big conversation and told Braff, “This is insane. She can’t do this. This is not helpful at all.” The director tried to convince her to use a wig, but she doubled down, saying again, “You’ll figure it out.” And so they did.

In a recent interview with USA Today, the Midsommar actress said everyone on set was “really anxious” since they were only going to have one take to get it, but that she “found it really liberating.”

She continued, “If anything, it was like the final key to unlocking this character. It took vanity out the window.”

Pugh also shared a personal connection to the scene, recalling as a teenager experiencing similar impulsive moments because she was “just looking in any direction but the thing that was making me sad.”

“For me, whenever I was particularly low as a teenager, I would do lots of quick fixes,” she said. “I would buy things like nail kits or scissors and go onto YouTube and find out how to do it.”

A Good Person is currently playing in theaters.

If you’re a fan of Daisy Jones & the Six, then you likely have the Prime Video drama’s soundtrack stuck in your head.

The show’s impressive roster of music includes 25 original songs, written or co-written by Grammy Award winner Blake Mills with the help of musicians/songwriters such as Marcus Mumford, Phoebe Bridgers, Jackson Browne and Taylor Goldsmith, among others. The catchy tunes, performed by the show’s cast, range from Daisy Jones & the Six hits like “Look at Us Now (Honeycomb)” to disco gems from Daisy’s BFF Simone to early Dunne Brothers rock numbers.

The Aurora album by Daisy Jones & the Six, in particular, “sounds like a band from the ‘70s that sounds kind of like other things, but actually is completely unique,” Suki Waterhouse, who plays keyboardist Karen, enthuses.

TVLine asked the show’s stars and executive producers to do the impossible: pick their favorite original song from the series’ deep bench of legit earworms. Their choices include band staples like “Let Me Down Easy” and “Regret Me,” but also lesser featured tracks from Aurora, as well as a couple of non-Daisy Jones & the Six selections.

Plus, the group’s leader singers, Riley Keough and Sam Claflin, reveal which songs they found the most challenging to sing, so much so that Claflin vows to never perform one of them again.

Jimin stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday (March 24) to promote his debut solo album, FACE.

To celebrate the new release, which dropped the same day through HYBE LABELS, the BTS member gave the U.S. solo debut performance of his ’80s-inspired song “Like Crazy.” Sporting a sparkly black jacket and white undershirt, the K-pop superstar showed off his impressive dance moves amid bright neon lights while surrounded by a group of dancers.

On Thursday night (March 23), Jimin sat down with Fallon to discuss a range of topics, including meeting President Joe Biden and keeping in touch with his BTS bandmates.

Though the band is on hiatus, a break to allow its seven members to fulfill South Korea’s mandatory military commitments, “we keep in touch,” Jimin explained, “with J-Hope, Suga, everyone.”

The artists also test out their solo material on one another. When a new song is “completed to some extent,” presumably including numbers from FACE, “that’s when we let one another listen to it,” he added.

Darting between Korean and English, Jimin discussed the “positive impact” of BTS meeting with president Joe Biden at the White House, and their talks with POTUS “about how more people should have keen interests in current issues.”

FACE was preceded by pre-release single “Set Me Free, Pt.2” and its dance-heavy music video. The six-song project also contains “Like Crazy,” album opener “Face-Off,” and more. In addition to production from the likes of Pdogg, Ghstloop and Evan, Jimin’s BTS bandmate RM also has songwriting credits on three songs on the tracklist.

NOW ON APPLE TV! Prepare to be entered involuntarily into a treacle chugging contest with the Oscar-winning animated short The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, directed by Peter Baynton and Charlie Macksey. It is the adaptation of the British children’s book by Macksey with a script by Macksey and Jon Croker. When conceiving his story, Macksey thought it would be cute to set Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot in Winnie the Pooh’s Hundred Acre Wood. Was he right?

A boy (Jude Coward Nicoll) is standing in the middle of the snow near some woods. A mole (Tom Hollander) comes across him and asks him where he is going. The boy says he is going home but doesn’t know where that is. The mole starts ranting about cake, and they start wandering aimlessly. They are attacked by a fox (Idris Elba) who attempts to eat the mole. But, the mole is able to free the fox from a snare, so the predator ignores his hunger.

“…rescues the mole from the river, and all three start wandering in the snow…”

Later, the fox rescues the mole from the river, and all three start wandering in the snow together. They find a horse (Gabriel Bryne) who has never really felt like he has been understood. We find out that the fox has self-esteem issues. The boy still has no idea who his family is or where he lives while the mole jabbers on about cake. It then starts raining.

F**k me to tears, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse is awful. It makes the mistake of developing the characters less in order to increase the chance of symbolism more. Occasionally the mole says some clever little line, like wasting time with friends is never time wasted. A parent may be impressed with this material, but a child would pick apart with a few deft “but whys?” A boy is lost in the woods. “But why?” Because he doesn’t remember where his home is. “But why?” Because that boy is not a kid but a cipher for platitudes.

Mexican actor Xavier López Rodriguez, who played the iconic character Chabelo on television for nearly five decades, died Saturday, his official Twitter announced. He was 88.

“This is a very sad morning, Xavier Lopez Chabelo, father, brother and husband has left us suddenly, due to abdominal complications,” the tweet read via Google Translate.

Shortly after, another tweet was posted and read, “With a torn soul and knowing that many and many people have loved him for many years and that they will feel his departure, we ask you to pray for his rest and give us the opportunity to spend in peace the mourning that overwhelms our entire family. Lopez Miranda Family.”

López was the host on the children’s game show “En Familia Con Chabelo” (“Family Time With Chabelo”). The program aired weekly on Sunday for nearly 45 years and made the Guinness Book of Records for its extensive broadcast run.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois, but López’s family moved back to Mexico where he and his sisters were raised, and he was trained as a doctor. He later found his calling in acting.

López was survived by several children and his wife.

Rapper Afroman is being sued by several Ohio law enforcement officials after he put footage of their 2022 raid on his house in music videos about the incident.

The Grammy-nominated rapper, who is best known for his 2002 jam “Because I Got High,” made a whole album about the August 2022 raid in which police broke down his door based on a search warrant for drug trafficking and kidnapping. No evidence supporting those allegations was found and no charges were filed.

He told NPR of the incident, “I asked myself, as a powerless Black man in America, what can I do to the cops that kicked my door in, tried to kill me in front of my kids, stole my money and disconnected my cameras? And the only thing I could come up with was make a funny rap song about them and make some money, use the money to pay for the damages they did and move on.”

The musician, whose given name is Joseph Edgar Foreman, wrote about the raid in several of his songs, including “Lemon Pound Cake,” which opens with they lyrics, “The Adams County sheriff kicked down my door, then I heard the glass break. They found no kidnapping victims, just some lemon pound cake.”

In the surveillance footage included in the video, police are shown kicking in the door and walking past the titular cake on the kitchen counter. Afroman told NPR that the cops also broke his video surveillance system and stole $400 from him.

Four deputies, two sergeants and one detective from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office are now suing him, his label and a Texas-based music distribution company for invasion of privacy.

In the complaint filed last week, they said they have received death threats, and also suffered “humiliation, ridicule, mental distress, embarrassment and loss of reputation.” Unless the music videos and social media posts are taken down, “Plaintiffs will suffer irreparable injury to their reputations, their mental health, and their legally protected rights,” the complaint read.

They are also seeking all proceeds of the songs and videos, as well as his merchandise, including sales of the malt liquor made by his 4204 Main Street Brewing Company.

Afroman said his reaction to the lawsuit was “a drop of anger, disbelief and a little anxiety, followed by tons of laughter. I was thinking, these big bad cops … are being beat up and bullied by those little corny rap songs I made about them. I’m like, ‘Oh my god, are you letting me know that my raps are working on you?’”

He was already planning a defamation lawsuit against the police and now plans to countersue. “I want to sue them for stealing my money, I want to sue them for writing ‘kidnapping’ on a warrant and making me suffer financially in my industry because just that accusation makes people raise an eyebrow about you,” he added.

In December, Afroman announced he was running for U.S. President in 2024 as an Independent on the platform of getting “weed legal everywhere.”

In the very first scene of Hulu’s Great Expectations, a distraught and disheveled Pip (Fionn Whitehead) ties one end of a rope to a bridge, tightens the other around his neck, and leaps. What happens next won’t be revealed until much later in the six-hour miniseries, but what’s clear right away is the message being sent: This isn’t Great Expectations as you remember it.

This is a Great Expectations that’s willing to get dirty, to push the envelope, to take ample liberties with the source material beloved (or at the very least, tolerated in school) by millions. There’s more sex, more violence, more drugs. But with too little in the way of humanity, insight or entertainment to offer alongside them, what could have been a daring spin on a classic is transformed instead into a dreary slog.

Great Expectations

The Bottom Line

Grimmer and grittier, but to what end?

Airdate: Sunday, March 26 (Hulu)
Cast: Fionn Whitehead, Olivia Colman, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Ashley Thomas, Johnny Harris, Owen McDonnell, Laurie Ogden, Trystan Gravelle
Creator: Steven Knight

The bare bones of the story remain much the same as always, following the upwardly mobile journey of Pip (played by Tom Sweet as a boy), a young orphan growing up under the care of his much-older sister Sarah (Hayley Squires) and her kindly blacksmith husband Joe (Owen McDonnell). Pip gets his first taste of the good life in childhood, when he’s enlisted by the bitter, wealthy Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) as a sort of plaything for her adopted daughter (played as a girl by Chloe Lea and as a young woman by Shalom Brune-Franklin) — and then begins to climb the social ranks in earnest as a young man under the mentorship of Jaggers (Ashley Thompson), a cynical lawyer working on behalf of an anonymous benefactor. Along the way, the naïve kid gets a rude awakening about what it truly means to be a “gentleman” in such a cutthroat world.

Beyond that, writer Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) takes great liberties with his Hulu- and BBC-produced drama. Several major characters see their arcs radically altered, up to and including their final fates, while some minor characters have been expanded and others eliminated entirely. Collectively, the changes make Great Expectations feel less like an act of respectful translation than a wholesale reimagining, cobbled together from hazy memories of what happened in the novel, impassioned opinions about what should have happened in the novel, and modern ideas about what may been lurking between the lines this whole time. It’s exciting in theory, if not necessarily in practice.

Some of its choices, faithful and otherwise, do yield big rewards. Thompson makes the most of Jaggers’ upgraded role in the story, tearing into overwritten dialogue like “I will happily throw the boy to the wild beast of this city, who would consume his youth as they would a fresh oyster before throwing the empty shell back into the river from whence it came” as if they were bloody steaks. (The bemused response by Rudi Dharmalingam’s Wemmick, the assistant who’s been taking dictation — “Of course you don’t really want me to write that” — makes for one of Great Expectations‘ rare laugh lines.) Brady Hood, who directed the first four episode, amps up the drama with a chilly visual style that emphasizes darkness and light: the inky shadows of the city, the warm glow of Pip’s humble village, the cold rays filtering in through Miss Havisham’s dusty windows.

As in every take on the saga including the original, Miss Havisham emerges as its single most memorable character, leaving an indelible impression that far outweighs her actual involvement in the plot. Colman, whose commanding presence has served her well in multiple queenly roles, cuts a striking figure in the wedding dress that Miss Havisham has worn ever since she was jilted at the altar years ago, with so many pearls wrapped around her neck they seem on the verge of choking her to death. “Sick. Sick fantasy. Sick. Sick,” she hisses to herself as she forces Pip and Estella to play her cruel games, with a feral glee in her eyes that would not look out of place on Gollum.

Much of Great Expectations, however, seems to be reaching for edginess for its own sake. That game scene is intercut with one of Sarah engaging in some light BDSM with Mr. Pumblechook (Matt Berry), which I suppose the series’ creators would insist is intended as a warped echo of the sexual power dynamics playing out in Miss Havisham’s parlor. It plays more like yet another reminder that this isn’t a regular Dickens adaptation, it’s a cool Dickens adaptation. Elsewhere, the series tries to inject some excitement into the eternal enmity between criminals Magwitch (Johnny Harris) and Compeyson (Trystan Gavelle) with shocking bursts of violence. But gunshots and stab wounds can only do so much to make up for the fact that neither fully registers as a character until late in the season.

Then again, few of the leads really register as characters for most of the series either. Great Expectations is built around great appetites — for status, for money, for revenge, for love — and the great destruction they can leave in their wake. (In a through line that’s thoughtful but undercooked, the series connects the ruthless immorality of British gentlemen with Britain’s own tyrannical behavior as a colonialist power on the world stage.) But the characters motivated by them seem to be written as thematic statements first, and people second. It’s difficult to sympathize much with Pip’s burning desire for Estella, for instance, when we get maybe one spark of true connection between them and many, many more instances of Pip being reminded she’s out of his reach.

This Great Expectations may be unusual in its eagerness to go down darker paths than most Dickens adaptations would ever think to. Rather than find anything new in those pleasure gardens thick with opium smoke, though, it loses the very quality that made Great Expectations such a favorite to pore over again and again to begin with — its ability to connect.

Here’s why the AI bot thinks Emma or Lily should be cast: “Emma Stone has a similar look to the character, with her red hair and fair skin. She also has experience playing strong, independent female characters, like in La La Land and Easy A, which could translate well to Meg’s personality.

Also, Lily James has a similar age range and has demonstrated her acting ability in various roles, including her portrayal of Cinderella in Disney’s live-action adaptation of the classic fairy tale. James has also shown her versatility in playing complex characters with depth and nuance, which would be essential for bringing Meg to life on screen.

Other actors who could potentially fit the role include Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, and Zendaya.”

Jonathan Majors was arrested on Saturday in New York on domestic violence allegations after a dispute with a 30-year old woman.

According to a statement from the NYPD, the woman told officers that she was assaulted, and was taken to the hospital with “minor injuries to her head and neck.”

A representative for Majors denied the allegations.

“He has done nothing wrong,” Majors’ spokesperson said in a statement to Variety. “We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up.”

According to the police statement, the officers received a 911 call around 11:14 a.m.

“A preliminary investigation determined that a 33-year-old male was involved in a domestic dispute with a 30 year-old female,” police said. “The victim informed police she was assaulted. Officers placed the 33-year-old male into custody without incident. The victim sustained minor injuries to her head and neck and was removed to an area hospital in stable condition.”

The police statement listed several potential charges: “strangulation,” “assault,” and “harassment.”

The actor recently starred in several major studio films. He played Damian Anderson in “Creed III” against director and co-star Michael B. Jordan. He also recently starred as the Marvel villain Kang the Conquerer in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” His latest picture, which originally premiered at Sundance, is titled “Magazine Dreams,” which has been acquired by Searchlight Pictures, and is set to come to theaters on Dec. 8. The actor has also signed to join Amazon Studios’ “Da Understudy.”

Only nine Marvel and DC movies have ever won an Oscar.

Comic book movies have always struggled to find much success when it comes to Hollywood’s most prestigious awards, particularly the Oscars.

But every so often a blockbuster comes along that resonates with the Academy and ultimately finds success in a number of categories.

1.) Superman (1978)

DC

As arguably the first-ever superhero blockbuster, Christopher Reeve’s Superman was also the first to win an Oscar, taking home a “Special Achievement Award” for its revolutionary visual effects. Upon release, the 1978 flick sported the tagline “You’ll Believe a Man Can Fly,” and clearly, its now-dated visual effects were successful in delivering on that promise.

Superman also received nominations for Stuart Baird’s film editing and John Williams’ iconic score, although it was unfortunately beaten out in both categories.

2.) Batman (1989)

Batman 1989
DC

1989’s Batman was recognized at the Oscars for “Best Art Direction” by Anton Furst and set decoration by Peter Young. The Tim Burton flick boasted an incredible gothic recreation of Gotham City and the Batcave that naturally earned Batman a prize in this category.

3.) Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Spider-Man 2
Sony Pictures

Spider-Man 2 lost out on several awards at the Oscars including “Best Sound Editing” and “Best Sound Mixing.” However, it did win the “Best Visual Effects” prize that year after Spider-Man and Doc-Ock went toe-to-toe in epic fashion with plenty of web-swinging along the way.

This came after 2002’s original Spider-Man failed to win in the same category, with Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers instead coming out victorious.

4.) The Dark Knight (2008)

The Dark Knight
DC

Heath Ledger tragically passed away seven months before the release of The Dark Knight introduced his Joker to the world. But the actor’s groundbreaking performance led him to posthumously receive the “Best Supporting Actor” award, with the prize being accepted by his mother, father, and sister on stage.

But that wasn’t The Dark Knight‘s only Oscar, as Christopher Nolan’s sophomore Batman outing also won for “Best Sound Editing.” The award was given to Nolan’s long-time sound editing collaborator Richard King, who has also won this category for Inception, Dunkirk, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

On top of its two Oscar wins The Dark Knight was nominated in an astounding six more categories – “Best Art Direction,” “Best Cinematography,” “Best Filming Editing,” “Best Makeup,” “Best Sound Mixing,” and “Best Visual Effects.”

5.) Suicide Squad (2016)

Suicide Squad
DC

Suicide Squad may be one of the worst-received movies to come out of Marvel and DC, but it still marks the only DCEU movie to win an Oscar. The “Best Makeup and Hairstyling” prize was awarded to Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini, and Christopher Nelson for their impressive work creating the squad.

6.) Black Panther (2018)

Black Panther
Marvel Studios

Black Panther still holds the record for the most Oscars given to a superhero movie with three awards out of seven nominations. Among the acknowledgments was for “Best Picture” – the first superhero movie to be nominated in the category – which it, unfortunately, lost out to against director Peter Farrelly’s Green Book.

Its other nominations were for “Best Original Song” – for Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars” – “Best Sound Editing,” and “Best Sound Mixing.”

Still, it did manage to take home three Academy Awards for “Best Original Score,” “Best Production Design,” and “Best Costume Design.” This largely demonstrated praise toward Marvel Studios’ creation and world-building of Wakanda along with Ludwig Göransson’s wonderful score that accompanied it.

7.) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Sony Pictures

Into the Spider-Verse is regarded by many as the greatest adaptation of Spider-Man ever made, and beyond that, the Academy concluded it was 2018’s “Best Animated Feature Film.” Sony’s animated blockbuster was praised upon release for its unique animation, deep characters, and impressive superhero story.

The award was given to directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, writer Phil Lord, and producer Christopher Miller.

8.) Joker (2019)

Joker
DC

The Elseworlds tale of Joker was certainly a different type of movie for DC, and one that saw the second-ever acting Oscar win for a comic book movie. Lead actor Joaquin Phoenix was able to beat out some intense competition to take home his first Oscar, winning “Best Actor,” for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck.

Joker was also recognized by the Academy as having the “Best Score” – curated by Hildur Guðnadóttir. The score that accompanied Arthur Fleck’s descent into madness was often ominous and terrifying, reflecting the tone of the movie.

Joker currently holds the record for the comic book movie with the most nominations with 11, nine of which it lost out on – “Best Cinematography,” “Best Costume Design,” “Best Directing,” “Best Film Editing,” “Best Makeup and Hairstyling,” “Best Sound Editing,” “Best Sound Mixing,” “Best Adapted Screenplay,” and “Best Picture.”

9.) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Marvel Studios

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever followed in the footsteps of its predecessor in winning “Best Costume Design” for Ruth E. Carter’s work in creating the attire of both the African nation and Namor’s Talokan.

Additionally, Queen Ramonda’s Angela Bassett was nominated for “Best Supporting Actress” – a historic moment for Marvel – but lost out to Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Jamie Lee Curtis.

The other nominations in question were for “Best Makeup and Hairstyling,” “Best Visual Effects,” and “Best Original Song” – for Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up.”

BONUS.) Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)

Zack Synder's Justice League
DC

Zack Snyder’s Justice League does not hold an official Oscar, however, the DC re-cut was the recipient of 2021’s fan-voted “Oscars Cheer Moment” for The Flash’s run through the Speed Force in the flick’s climax. Snyder also took home the other fan-voted award for “Oscars Fan Favorite” for his post-apocalyptic Netflix original Army of the Dead. Both wins came as a shock to many after most assumed Spider-Man: No Way Home would take home both fan-appeal prizes with ease.

The current totals leave Marvel will six Oscars and DC just leading ahead of it with seven awards – not including its fan-voted prize as that does not amount to a formal Academy Award. One could argue those from the blue brand to even be slightly more impressive as DC remains the only one to win in the main categories, having received two acting Oscars, both for performances of the Joker.

The next Oscars will be the 96th Academy Awards and take place in early 2024 with an official date yet to be announced.

With themes such as love, fame, and self-discovery, it is a great watch if you like romantic comedies – and really great to see that as the main plot in a show.

Prominent video game writer Chris Avellone has settled a lawsuit against two women who had publicly accused him of sexual misconduct, and claimed he’s been awarded a seven-figure payment.

Avellone, who has previously worked on games such Respawn’s Jedi: Fallen Order, was accused in a series of June 2020 Twitter posts by the women as being “an abusive, abrasive, conniving sexual predator”. After the allegations arose, multiple developers cut ties with the writer, notably Dying Light 2 studio Techland.

A year later, Avellone announced he had taken legal action and accused the two women of libel. Now, nearly two years on, the case has been settled.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor – Official Story Trailer

On Saturday, Avellone announced on his personal blog that the claims had been dismissed with prejudice and that he was to receive a seven-figure payment which includes his attorney fees.

The two women behind the original allegations, Karissa Barrows and Kelly Rae Bristol, have also released a joint statement claiming that their public statements had been “misinterpreted”.

“Mr. Avellone never sexually abused either of us,” the signed statement reads. “We have no knowledge that he has ever sexually abused any women. We have no knowledge that Mr. Avellone has ever misused corporate funds. Anything we have previously said or written about Mr. Avellone to the contrary was not our intent.

“We wanted to support women in the industry. In so doing, our words have been misinterpreted to suggest specific allegations of misconduct that were neither expressed nor intended. We are passionate about the safety, security and agency of women, minorities, LGBTQIA+ persons, and every other community that has seen persecution in the video game industry.

“We believe Mr. Avellone shares a desire to protect and uplift those communities. We believe that he deserves a full return to the industry and support him in those endeavors.”

In his own statement, Avellone wrote: “I appreciate the willingness of Ms. Barrows and Ms. Bristol to work with us in addressing issues within the game community, and their advocacy is to be commended and supported.

“There are still many very real challenges that we face but am confident we can face them together.

“In the spirit of these goals, I would ask everyone to respect the privacy of Ms. Barrows and Ms. Bristol and use this opportunity as a means to listen to all voices in improving our culture and our communities.”
