“The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country: The Glass House” – Book Three
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Lisandro Estherren
Color Artist: Patricio Delpeche
Letterer: Simon Bowland

Summary

Angels and demons, dreams and nightmares, the living, the dead, and a nightclub that’s run by denizens of Hell. Welcome to The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country: The Glass House #3.

Positives

As always, with a James Tynion script, we get some great dialogue, really messed up situations, and more colorful characters than Mardi-Gras. The plot thickens between poor, dead Kelly and her all-too-alive boyfriend, as he’s approached by the also dead Madison (now in the shape of a talking cat). Yes, you did read that last sentence correctly.

Long standing fans of the Sandman Universe will also jump for joy, as two characters from Neil Gaiman’s opus return this issue. One of them’s been hanging around for a while but will shine on her own in the next issue (see the end of this review for more details). The second is an old friend who can be seen in the attached artwork.

The creeping horror continues to unnerve and disturb, in the most delicious and entertaining ways. Is the Corinthian going to revert to type? Is he really working with Madison and Dream, or with the demon Azazel? Knowing the mind of James Tynion, I think we’ll get an answer somewhere between those two extremes that will both surprise and delight us.

Lisandro’s back! After last month’s Estherren-less issue, which was wonderfully covered by his partner in crime, Patricio Delpeche, the dark duo of dreamland art is reunited, and this issue looks wonderful. Once again, look at the gorgeous art attached above for proof.

All three covers for this issue are fabulous, and Simon Bowland’s letters continue to impress.

Negatives

This time the negative is also a positive. There won’t be an issue of The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country: The Glass House in July. Yes, this is definitely a negative. However, there will be a Thessaly one-shot special next month, to give us nightmares until issue #4 comes out, in August.

Verdict

The Glass House #3 is another in a long line of superb horror comics. As someone who’s loved this universe it’s denizens, monsters, dreams, and nightmares for decades, picking up a new issue is always a highlight of my week. This series remains highly recommended.

Diablo IV’s Nightmare dungeons will be receiving a major buff ahead of the game’s first season, Blizzard has announced.

In the first “fireside” chat for Diablo IV on Twitch, game director Joe Shely discussed recent hotfixes that made farming normal dungeons less efficient when it came to leveling up and gaining items. In order to make Nightmare dungeons, which are intended to be a key part of Diablo IV’s endgame, more appealing, Blizzard will be improving the amount of XP rewarded by Nightmare dungeons.

Now Playing: Diablo IV Everything To Know

Part of making Nightmare dungeons more efficient overall is to reduce the amount of time it takes to travel to the dungeons themselves. As it stands now, players have to travel to the nearest waypoint and then manually run to the dungeon entrance. Blizzard in the near future will be making it so Nightmare Sigils will create a waypoint for the corresponding dungeon that players can travel to, greatly reducing travel time and making Nightmare dungeons more efficient to farm.

The current plan is for those changes to roll out ahead of Diablo IV’s first season, which is currently slated to arrive in mid to late July. Changes that will be coming later alongside the release of Season 1 will be account-wide map and Altar of Lilith progress. Once those changes are live, players creating new characters will automatically have earned the Renown associated with uncovering the map and unlocking Altars of Lilith on a previous character.

Additional changes coming to Diablo IV, like adjustments to the game’s resistances (a stat high-level players have described as currently not being worth using) and having gems be treated like currency rather than items that take up inventory space , will be coming later closer to the release of Season 2. Blizzard is planning on releasing new seasons for Diablo IV every three months. Each Diablo IV season will include new gameplay features and a seasonal questline.

Diablo IV has been a smash-hit for Blizzard. It passed $666 million in sales in five days, and became the fastest-selling game in Blizzard’s over 30-year history. In addition to new seasons, Blizzard has already confirmed that two Diablo IV expansions are in the works.

How many Netflix projects do you know that were shot on film?

We are almost a week away from Wes Anderson‘s sci-fi trip to the desert, Asteroid City. While we are preparing to see the American auteur’s latest project, Anderson has been preoccupied with a mystery project for Netflix.

Based on a Roald Dahl story, Anderson’s 12th feature film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, will hit the streaming giant sometime in Fall 2023. This will be Anderson’s second time adapting the work of the popular British storyteller and will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade.

Asteroid City cinematographer Robert Yeoman also shared more details with The Film Stage about the forthcoming Henry Sugar, which will feature four separate stories with actors playing different roles across the stories.

“Three of them were shot on a stage. One of them is out in the jungle,” Yeoman said. “So it was quite a challenge to create all this on a stage. And each one has a very distinct look to it. We shot 16mm for the whole thing, which when I saw the finished film, the first thing I wrote Wes was I just love the 16mm. It has such a distinct look to it.”

What is interesting about Anderson shooting on a 16mm camera is that it seems that Netflix’s approved camera list doesn’t seem to apply to film cameras. What does matter is how the film stock is scanned for Netflix’s services. This means that filmmakers can opt to use film cameras rather than digital cameras when creating a film for the streaming service.

However, this is a case-by-case situation as Netflix doesn’t have any “approved” film cameras on their list (which you can check out here). Anderson is a big name in the entertainment industry, so it’s no surprise that Netflix gave him the green light to shoot on film.

“But again, he’s pushing the boundaries and it’s a very different style, in some ways than what Wes usually does. When I saw the film––I saw it a couple of months ago, they were color timing––I loved it when we worked on it, but when I saw it on the screen, I was like, ‘This is really cool.’ It was really amazing. And I’ll be curious how everyone reacts to it. It’s a little bit different style than what Wes ordinarily does,” Yeoman said. “I think a lot of it has to do with, when he did those animated movies, it changed how he approaches making a film now. And that one in particular, we knew there would be something that would be put on the screen up on top or something because it was on a stage. Everything was forced perspective. And so it was a little tricky oftentimes. But, you know, it challenges you. And when you can pull it off, you get a great deal of satisfaction with that.”

It will be interesting to see one of the few films shot on film for Netflix later this fall, but here’s to hoping that we will eventually see more Netflix projects on film. Until then, we will wait with anticipation for Anderson’s 11th and 12th feature films. Rumors are circulating that Anderson is preparing to shoot his 13th feature film later this year. However, no further details about the project have been shared.

Let us know whether or not you think Netflix should approve film cameras in the comments!

Neal Kirby, the son of the late legend Jack Kirby, is defending his father’s legacy, which he says has been overshadowed by Stan Lee.

Jack Kirby was a titan of the comic world, but how many of the millions piling into opening weekends for the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure have never heard of him, especially compared with Stan Lee? According to his son, Neal, far too many…and we might have to agree.

While Stan Lee and Jack Kirby both played significant roles in molding characters like the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, it is generally Lee that gets the majority of the credit, especially to the casual comic/MCU fan. But now Neal Kirby is expressing serious dismay over this, boiling over following the new Disney+ documentary, the aptly titled Stan Lee.

Neal Kirby took to Twitter – via his daughter’s account – to blast the Disney+ documentary and defend Jack Kirby’s reputation, which has fallen into the shadow of Stan Lee as time has gone on and Marvel has become a Hollywood juggernaut (yes, they co-created that character, too). “It’s not any big secret that there has always been controversy over the parts that were played in the creation and success of Marvel’s characters. Stan Lee had the fortunate circumstance to have access to the corporate megaphone and media, and he used these to create his own mythos as to the creation of the Marvel character pantheon. He made himself the voice of Marvel. So, for several decades he was the ‘only’ man standing…” Kirby noted that his father died in 1994; Lee, meanwhile, passed away in 2018, which gave him more time in the business and whose nearly three dozen cameos helped further solidify him as the mascot for Marvel. Neal Kirby added, “Are we to assume Lee had a hand in creating every Marvel character? Are we to assume that it was never the other cocreator that walked into Lee’s office and said, ‘Stan I have a great idea for a character!’ According to Lee, it was always his idea. Lee spends a fair amount of time talking about how and why he created the Fantastic Four, with only one fleeting reference to my father.”

He summed up his message regarding Jack Kirby not getting enough credit compared to Stan Lee with, “The battle for creator’s rights has been around since the first inscribed Babylonian tablet. It’s way past time to at least get this one chapter of literary/art history right. ‘Nuff said.” Let’s hope for Neal’s sake that Marvel doesn’t try to further capitalize on Lee’s status…

Do you think Jack Kirby has been unjustly removed from the Marvel discussion due to Stan Lee? What do you think of Neal Kirby’s statement? Let us know.

The US Open golf championship at the Los Angeles Country Club concluded with Wyndham Clark taking the trophy.

“I just felt like my mom was watching over me today and, she can’t be here and I miss you mom,” Clark said when presented with his trophy. “I just feel like I’ve worked so hard and I’ve dreamed about this moment for so long. There’s been so many times I’ve visualized being here in front of you guys and winning this championship, I just feel like it’s my time.”

Rory McIlroy placed second place and told NBC “It was hard to get the ball really close all day” after coming close to winning.

“I hung in there, I fought right until the end,” he added. “Didn’t quite get the job done but… I’m going to keep coming back until I get another one.”

This is the first time that the LACC opens its doors to a major championship since 1940, although it hosted the Walker Cup in 2017. The exclusive country club opened its North Course to the championship and gave insight into a mythical course that not many have had access to.

“It’s like an unveiling,” Gene Sykes, president of the club, told the LA Times recently. “A lot of golf people kind of know of it or have heard about it, but have never been there. It’s mythic in some ways.”

The 325 acres course is in the Beverly Hills area and is estimated to be worth $9 billion, according to The Telegraph. Not everyone is allowed entry into the club and Hugh Hefner was one of the most notable personalities that was denied a membership. The publication alleges that Hefner, whose Playboy Mansion is by the 13th hole, was fed up after being turned down he built a zoo to annoy his neighbors. During the US Open final, some of the animals could be heard creating a ruckus.

Others not fans of the LACC include former champion Brooks Koepka who recently said he doesn’t like the “blind tee shots.”

“And then I think there’s just some spots that no matter what you hit, the ball just ends up in the same spot,” he said, according to the LA Times. “I think it would be more fun to play on just like a regular round than it would be a U.S. Open.”

Since The Other Two premiered in 2019 it’s become one of television’s most precious gems. Full of cutting satire, relentless pop culture references, a sparkling roster of celebrity guest stars, and delightfully absurdist humor, Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider’s Max comedy is in a class all its own. Season 3 raises the bar week after week, but Episode 8, “Brooke Hosts a Night of Undeniable Good,” made me scream in horror, glee, and pure adoration no less than 20 times. On top of stellar performances from Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver, one of the greatest TV episodes of the year features a telethon for mental health, an eventful high school reunion, yet another iconic gay anthem, an elaborate plan to chloroform Ben Platt, a special treat for Josh Segarra fans, and so much more. Now more than ever before, The Other Two is must-see TV.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “The Idol” episode 3.

If there’s one thing “The Idol” is known for by its third episode, it’s shocking viewers with its racy sex scenes filled with an almost nude Lily-Rose Depp, who plays rebounding pop star Jocelyn, alongside arguably cringey lines from Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, who plays nightclub owner Tedros.

While Cannes audiences knew what to expect from the first two episodes of the music drama following its premiere at the festival — which debuted to scandalized reactions — the escalating events of episode 3 took many viewers by surprise.

“The Idol,” which was co-created by Tesfaye, “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim, centers on Jocelyn’s best stab at a comeback journey to become the No. 1 pop star after a nervous breakdown derailed her last tour. By the third episode, Tedros is well into convincing Jocelyn he will be instrumental in her music career — likely under the guise of something more suspicious.

Keep reading to see just how much “The Idol” pushed the envelop in its third episode — and we know there is definitely more to come before the series concludes its five-episode season.

Tedros Goes Down on Jocelyn — in a Convertible — With Leia Driving

The third installment of the series opens with Tedros suggesting that he and Jocelyn go shopping — which clearly means that Leia (Rachel Sennott) will drive the dynamic duo to Rodeo drive in their flashy red convertible while Tedros goes down on Jocelyn in the backseat. No one would see that, right?

Tedros Gets Intimidated by a Valentino Retail Associate

Finally at Valentino, Jocelyn has a “Pretty Woman” moment shopping on Rodeo Drive as the store is cleared out for the pop star’s shopping spree. As the sales associates center their attention on Jocelyn and Tedros’ desires, Tedros gets wound up by a male employee paying what he considers too much attention to Jocelyn. “Look at her one more time,” Tedros challenges the staffer as he grabs him and continues to threaten him.

Tedros Pressures Jocelyn to Fire her Employee for Commenting on Her Body

Tedros is definitely setting some sort of record for popping off at multiple men for allegedly hitting on Jocelyn. If getting wound up by the Valentino associate wasn’t enough, it turns out Tedros was also enraged earlier in the day by Jocelyn’s male employee commenting on her body after supplying her probiotic supplements and noting how well they worked. Almost instantly, Tedros slaps him and pressures Jocelyn to end his employment, which she does.

Tedros Pleasures Himself in the Valentino Store

Jocelyn and Tedros make the most out of their privacy in the Valentino store by hooking up in the dressing room. When Jocelyn ends their encounter early, telling Tedros that she doesn’t want him to finish inside of her, Tedros continues to pleasure himself in the dressing room, loudly enough for the workers to hear.

Jocelyn and Tedros Hook Up in Front of Leia Again

If the convertible weren’t enough, Jocelyn and Tedros hook up again at her home after their shopping spree — just a couple hundred feet away from Leia.

Dyanne Takes Center Stage

While Jocelyn romps around with Tedros and the rest of his crew, Dyanne has taken center stage in Jocelyn’s music video from Episode 2, with Nikki supervising.

Tedros and Xander Suggest Jocelyn Use the Leaked Photo as Her Album Cover

As Tedros’ efforts to gain control over Jocelyn’s music and life ramp up, he sidebars with Xander as they plot out a new plan for Jocelyn’s upcoming album: use the leaked photo of Jocelyn with bodily substances on her face as the cover.

Jocelyn Reveals Her Mother Used to Abuse Her Using a Hairbrush

In an unexpected turn of events, Jocelyn reveals at a dinner party with Tedros and their friends that her late mother used to employ an old hairbrush as a correcting tool for her daughter, hitting Jocelyn with it whenever she disobeyed her, didn’t exercise, flirted with someone she didn’t like, and so on and so forth. It appears as though the abuse happened under Xander’s watch, as Jocelyn and Xander clearly have some unresolved feelings regarding whether Xander did enough — or anything — to stop it.

Tedros Instructs Jocelyn to Get the Hairbrush and Uses It on Her

After hearing Jocelyn’s heartbreaking story that brought many of their friends to tears, Tedros tells Jocelyn to go get the hairbrush, assuring her that working through the pain will lead to a better end result. While Levinson and Tesfaye spared us from fully experiencing what happened, it’s clear Tedros used the hairbrush in a similar manner as her mother, before eventually bathing Jocelyn.

By the end, Jocelyn whispers the most shocking words we could expect after that scene: “Thank you for taking care of me.”

Jon Hamm missed out on a starring role that went to Ben Affleck. But he’s not Mad, man.

David Fincher’s Gone Girl almost went to Hamm over Affleck, Hamm said on Tuesday’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. Hamm made an appearance with his Mad Men costar John Slattery, and answered a fan’s question about whether he was slated for the 2014 mystery-thriller.

“Yeah,” he responded. “I was down to the very end of that. It was meant to be me, but we had to film the continuing adventures of Mr. Draper.” Hamm played ad man supreme Draper on “Mad Men,” which ran from 2007 to 2015.

Hamm didn’t get into the nitty gritty of why he had to turn down the role. But a 2015 report from Page Six claimed Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner wouldn’t let him out of his contract.

The actor lamented that he wasn’t able to participate in a film set in his native St. Louis.

“Poor Ben, a Boston guy, had to wear a Cardinals hat,” he said. “He was not very happy about it.”

A superhero origin story serves as an allegory for a poignantly thrilling coming-of-age tale for Pakistani American teen Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). “We wanted to represent her in multifaceted ways,” says costume designer Arjun Bhasin. “She’s an artist, a misfit, a [Marvel] superfan, a young woman, a South Asian.”

Kamala’s initial purple corduroy shirt and hoodie hint toward the superpowered crystalline energy that she’ll channel via her great-grandmother’s bangle, which Bhasin detailed with Islamic calligraphy. He imagined that the Jersey City-ite imbued her thrifted wardrobe with creative self-expression. Kamala embroiders superhero-esque stars on her baggy jeans and doodles on her Converse Chuck Taylors.

Visiting family in Pakistan, Kamala “realizes that her relatives are super hipster compared to her,” says Bhasin, depicting a familiar second-generation experience (although she does manage to violate a club dress code with her red Chucks, jeans and an AvengerCon T-shirt). “No matter where she goes, she’s always a little bit of a misfit and a nerd. She’s neither from here nor from there.”

Kamala explores Karachi, and her ancestral history, discovering how to fully command her innate powers. Her ensemble evolves into a red kurta tunic over dark jeans. “It’s an amalgamation of all those different worlds that live within her,” says Bhasin, who custom-designed 95 percent of the costumes.

The outfit’s color-blocking and silhouette lead to the Ms. Marvel supersuit, which Bhasin designed with Islamic art and a kaf, the Arabic letter Kamala’s name starts with. “All the different facets of what it means to be a superhero is to be true to yourself in the end,” says Bhasin. “When she finds herself, it’s really the most honest expression of who she actually is.”

Lucy (Zoe Margaret Colletti), the daughter of Charles-Haden’s (Steve Martin) ex, makes her debut in season two like a Zoomer tornado. She bursts into the Arconia and befuddles her estranged de facto stepfather with her fast-talking, youthful vernacular and sheer enthusiasm to “culture up in Manhatty!”

After reading the “hilarious” dialogue, costume designer Dana Covarrubias jumped on the idea of conveying the generational divide through Gen Z’s “anti-fashion.” “It’s chaotic and confusing,” says Covarrubias, who introduced the newcomer in a neon multicolored Forever 21 cardigan and yellow plaid flannel BDG pants, covered in yin-yang signs.

A flummoxed Charles implores millennial Mabel (Selena Gomez), clad in her signature marigold, to connect with Lucy. Listening to the latter’s rapid-fire stream-of-consciousness monologue, Mabel finds herself just as bewildered. But the two young women connect through their yellow palettes. “We wanted to make sure that they looked like they could borrow things from each other’s closets, but different enough so you felt that Lucy was a younger generation,” says Covarrubias, who took inspiration from Instagram, plus street style in Brooklyn neighborhoods like Greenpoint and Bushwick.

In the finale, set a year later, Lucy, now a member of the Arconia sleuthing team, beams in an adorably chic Alice + Olivia black dress, with a scalloped white lace collar and trim. “We wanted to make her look a little bit older and mature,” says Covarrubias, admitting that Colletti’s own vivacious aesthetic may have influenced Lucy’s last look. “She has a really cute blend of ’60s go-go girl meets Harajuku — very interesting personal style.”

“The overarching theme is grief,” says costume designer Allyson Fanger, charting 17-year-old Alice’s (Lukita Maxwell) journey toward acceptance a year after her mother’s death.

“She’s still pulling it together, but she’s also dealing with her dad, who’s a mess, and she has to be the adult in the household,” says Fanger. Before school, Alice, hastily clad in a slouchy red hoodie and long denim shorts, furiously cleans up the kitchen, ravaged from dad Jimmy’s (Jason Segel) late-night bender.

“Her mom hasn’t been around for a little while. They haven’t gone shopping and she doesn’t have anything new,” says Fanger. During her therapist father’s emotional absence, Alice leans on neighbor Liz (Christa Miller). Fanger imagines the generous empty-nester bought Alice more polished pieces, like a pleated Brandy Melville miniskirt.

As father and daughter begin to repair their relationship, Alice starts to come out of her shell. Excited for an engagement party, Alice leaves Jimmy almost speechless as she descends the stairs in a black slip-dress with lace overlay by Kwaidan Editions. The long sleeves and high neck provide protective cover, while the sheer mesh telegraphs vulnerability. “She’s on the precipice of womanhood. Her dad is hosting an event just like when her mom was still alive,” says Fanger, also nodding to Gen Z’s affinity for ’90s trends. “It’s the first time when she feels a sense of normalcy of her youth.”

Alice and Jimmy eventually work through their loss together, culminating in an exuberant finale wedding. Alice wears her mom’s PVC and gold-heeled “hot-as-shit shoes” with a vintage dress featuring vibrant pastel watercolor patterns. “[Alice was] feeling her emerging womanhood and had a brightness and a lightness to her,” says Fanger. “That fabric was light, ethereal and happy. There was joy in it.”

Amid an existential quarter-life crisis, personal assistant Portia (Haley Lu Richardson) embarks on a luxurious Italian holiday with her boss, Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge). In a breakfast scene, Portia wears a Stüssy plaid mechanic’s shirt and statement sunglasses, one of her many randomly assembled outfits that sparked an impassioned discourse among viewers, who also questioned her chaotic decision-making.

“She seems like [she] would clutch at disparate trends,” says costume designer Alex Bovaird. Like her peers, Portia experiments with fashion to express and explore her “moods” and wavering ambitions. “She gets [to the resort], and it’s not what she expected,” says Bovaird. “She’s a bit deflated, and a couple of things she wears to breakfast, she barely paid attention to what she was pulling together. She’s depressed.”

Portia can’t look to her erratic boss for guidance, either, but she does “echo” Tanya’s style. “They’re both colorful, both eclectic,” says Bovaird. “Tanya sees herself in Portia and warns her, ‘Don’t live like me.’ ”

After a harrowing final night, Portia attempts to depart incognito at the airport, but dons her most discordant — therefore noticeable — ensemble: shirt and jeans from the day before, gift shop sunglasses and a baseball cap secured with a striped scarf, which references Tanya’s silky-headwear moments. Says Bovaird, “By the end, Portia is looking like a hot mess.”

Another group of singles is testing to see whether love truly is blind.

During Netflix’s fan event on Saturday, the streamer released a first look at Season 5 of the hugely popular dating series Love Is Blind, which is set to premiere in September. Although the clip doesn’t reveal the city that Netflix chose for the upcoming installment, it does give a peek at one of the potential couples.

“I’ll just be honest with you, I have a track record of crappy relationships. I just haven’t found the right person,” the woman says, revealing that she’s actually been married previously. As it turns out, the man she’s speaking to has been engaged.

“My mom tells me maybe I’m not meant to be in a relationship,” she tells the camera in a confessional. “I’m definitely not a perfect person, but I know I deserve love.”

Watch the full sneak peek above.

Love Is Blind follows a series of single men and women from one specific metropolitan area (most recently Seattle in Season 4) as they go on blind speed dates within adjoined rooms called “pods,” getting engaged without ever seeing one another face to face.

The dating show, hosted by Vanessa and Nick Lachey, was renewed through Season 5 back in March 2022. When Season 4 debuted, it was among the most streamed series in April on Netflix, just behind No. 1 The Night Agent.

An exact premiere date for Love Is Blind Season 5 has yet to be revealed.

The “Airport” films were a major staple of commercial 1970s cinema, a popcorn and cotton candy alternative to a decade of movies that included “The French Connection” (1971) and “Coming Home” (1978).

While a generation of comedy lovers grew up on the Zucker-Abrams-Zucker masterpiece “Airplane!” and its sequel, most who can quote those movies may not be aware that those pair of parodies are based on the “Airport” dramas.

In the same way a lot of ’90s teens loved the “Austin Powers” movies but had never seen the Sean Connery era-007 thrillers of mod comedies they’re based on.

William Wellman’s 1954 “The High and the Mighty,” starring John Wayne, was another major inspiration for “Airplane!” as well, though that film lacked dialogue between seatmates Jimmie Walker and Charo (more on that later, I promise).

Now that the “Airport” thrillers are on Netflix, it’s time to revisit one of the most successful and wildly uneven franchises to emerge from the ’70s.

The original “Airport” builds two dueling narratives that eventually intersect: while the crew of a Boeing 707 is preparing for a packed flight, someone on the passenger list is planning to bring a bomb onboard.

“Airport,” the biggest movie blockbuster of 1970, is uneven but very entertaining. It maintains interest, even as it has nothing to say about its era, aside from the way it provides total escapism from its Hollywood Golden Age ensemble cast.

You won’t find real issues here, or any reference to the escalating Vietnam war or the counterculture revolution taking place. This is escapism, though its depiction of air travel as being fraught with fear and danger was ahead of its time.

The film recalls when air travel was still considered sexy and exotic, with two-story jets with a piano bar and first class that felt like another planet. “Airport” went so far as to depict one of the members of The Rat Pack as the pilot.

Remember, this was released at the time the legendary “Hi, I’m Judy…Fly Me” ads were ubiquitous on television.

Director George Seaton makes great use of widescreen cinematography, particularly in its opening and a great point-of-view shot of the pilot inspecting the aisles. Seaton, who also directed “Miracle on 34th St” (1947), is a good storyteller, even when the tale itself is this pulpy and tonally inconsistent.

FAST FACT: “Airport” scored an impressive $100 million in 1970, coming in second for the year behind “Love Story” ($106 million).

The screenplay by Seaton, faithfully based on Arthur Hailey’s 1968 novel, is so jokey, it undermines the tension, going the crowd-pleasing route when it should be building suspense. The frequent use of split screen is inventive and so are the simple but still lovely special effects.

The all-star cast isn’t enough to counter the uneven tone. As the airport manager, Burt Lancaster isn’t great in this (I blame the role) and Dean Martin is not who you want playing an airline captain and hard to buy in a dramatic part.

The two should have swapped roles.

Helen Hayes’ Oscar-winning performance as a stowaway starts strong but becomes a series of opportunities to mug for the camera. On the other hand, Maureen Stapleton, playing the wife of the bomber, is very effective, providing a complex emotional center the film badly needs.

As the chief mechanic called in to help when things get bad, a blustering George Kennedy ultimately (and easily) walks away with the whole movie.

As expected, the attitudes on hand are incredibly sexist and chauvinistic (no surprise when Rat Packer Martin is flying the plane!). “Airport” is never tense enough once the big incident occurs- after the stunning explosion, the crew is far too calm and kept considering what is taking place.

It’s classy but corny.

“Airport 1975,” by director Jack Smight (who had better luck with “Midway” in 1976), depicts another Boeing 747 and the disaster that the crew and passengers face mid-flight. In this case, a small plane crashes into the Boeing and forces an emergency landing.

This first sequel frontloads the disaster at the top of the second act, immediately distinguishing it from the original, which at least took time for character development and atmosphere.

Charlton Heston has the Lancaster role and is, likewise, neutered by the assignment. In fact, despite top billing, Heston is barely in this. Kennedy continues to prove his worth to the series by giving a lot to his role.

The dopey list of co-stars doesn’t fare as well, as this really needed Helen Hayes and Maureen Stapleton’s touch. A post- “Exorcist” Linda Blair is barely utilized- ditto Erik Estrada. Sid Caesar’s character is grating, Myrna Loy plays a one-note lush and Gloria Swanson hams it up.

We also get a crew of horny airline workers and many cliché-ridden passengers. While less quip and joke-heavy than the original, it’s still drawn out and dull.

“Airplane!” cribbed much from this.

While “Airport 1975” was made during the height of the ‘70s Disaster Movie Era (a genre it ostensibly created with the first film), it lacks the elegance of the original or the more dynamic showmanship of most Irwin Allen thrillers of its era.

There’s a nice surprise with a failed rescue attempt, but those rear projection effects aren’t fooling anyone. It’s hard to believe this was a hit, let alone the second of what would become a four-part film franchise!

“Airport ‘77” is a wilder film than its predecessor, with a hijacking plot out of James Bond and a concept that aims to recreate the thrills and visuals of Allen’s “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972).

Until the hijacking finally takes place, this has the look and feel of “The Love Boat.” Directed by Jerry Jameson (who helmed “Raise the Titanic” after this and mostly directed for TV afterward), the dialog is bad from top to bottom and none of the performances are enough to elevate it.

Jack Lemmon tries hard as the captain but looks foolish giving so much to this. Lee Grant is painfully over the top playing a drunk, Olivia De Haviland doesn’t match Helen Hayes but tries, and James Stewart does little and appears lost.

Kennedy barely registers this time, Christopher Lee’s fine work is cut short and Brenda Vaccaro winds up faring best. Kathleen Quinlan being serenaded and wooed by a blind pianist is the eye-rolling low point.

The appeal here is the disaster – it’s a cleverly staged spectacle, with effective exterior visual effects shots. An extensive sequence of in-cabin flooding knocking over bystanders impresses, as is the audacity of the salvation through flotation finale.

There are also long scenes of spouting lousy exposition, undermining the action. “Airport ‘77” is better than “Airport 1975,” but not by much. The film’s teaser trailer famously touted it was “Bigger and More Exciting Than ‘Airport ’75,” which is correct.

“The Concorde…Airport ‘79” is among the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Let’s start with the title- which appears drab and tired looking, like the whole movie.

This feels very much like a TV-movie from its era, with no sense of scope, wonder or even a need for widescreen. Directed by David Lowell Rich, whose filmography includes the notorious TV movie “Satan’s School for Girls” (1973) and, perhaps the reason he landed this gig, two other TV movies about commercial airlines in peril: “The Horror at 37,000 Feet” (1973) and “SST: Death Flight” (1977).

The former stars William Shatner and Buddy Epson, while the latter was featured during the first season of “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”

Somehow Eric Roth wrote this- clearly, he got better.

The messy plot involves an arms dealer and a crisis that can be solved by a commercial plane being able to dodge the efforts of a missile in midflight. Lalo Schifrin’s score is the only plus. Otherwise, the awful aspects stack as high as 20,000 feet.

Behold the terrible Russian athlete subplot, the woman who can’t leave the restroom, the gratuitous Jimmy Walker and Charo cameos, the corny and the nonsensical Robert Wagner plot line (his evil plan is to crash a plane to get rid of a file!).

There’s also the wretched dialog (“Why do you think it’s called a cockpit, honey?”) and accompanying sexism, Charo talking to her dog, the maudlin deaf girl, David Warner’s banana joke and the hot tub scene(!).

Series MVP George Kennedy can’t save this, either, as his hambone performance is arguably the film’s most embarrassing.

The special effects are awful, but at least that aspect and the upside-down plane sequences are unintentionally hilarious. Notice how the closing shot of the plane and the Concorde logo in flames is then quickly followed by a pretty shot of the Concorde in flight because, after all, this is just an all-star commercial for the Concorde, right?

“The Concorde…Airport ‘79” wound up being to the class act “Airport” what “Jaws The Revenge” is to “Jaws.” It’s an unfortunate, campy end to a formerly prestigious film franchise.

On the other hand, “Airport” not only inspired those brilliantly funny “Airplane!” spoofs but continues to fly high on the fumes of every subsequent disaster movie. When an official remake (and not a shameless rip-off) is eventually and inevitably announced, fasten your seatbelts.

Kourtney Kardashian brought an unexpected guest to Friday’s Blink-182 concert in Los Angeles.

The reality TV star revealed during the show at BMO Stadium that she is expecting her first child with drummer Travis Barker. In the audience, Kardashian showed off her baby bump and held up a sign that read, “Travis I’m pregnant,” while Barker was onstage.

Barker, who almost certainly already knew his wife was expecting, played along by joining Kardashian in the crowd for a celebratory hug and kiss.

The epic stunt was a callback to the music video for Blink-182’s “All the Small Things,” during which a woman holds up a poster identical to Kardashian’s.

“Overwhelmed with gratitude and joy for God’s blessing and plan,” Kardashian wrote Sunday on Instagram, where she shared concert footage of the pregnancy announcement. She also posted sweet backstage photos of Barker kissing and drumming on her stomach.

Kardashian, 44, and Barker, 47, wed in May 2022 after dating for more than a year. They each have children from previous relationships: Kardashian shares two sons, Mason, 13, and Reign, 8, and a daughter, Penelope, 10, with Scott Disick; while Barker shares son Landon, 19, and daughter Alabama, 17, with Shanna Moakler.

The mega-influencer and the percussionist staged the pregnancy reveal during Blink-182’s reunion tour. After playing back-to-back shows in Los Angeles this weekend, the punk-rock band is scheduled to perform in San Diego on Monday and Tuesday, San Jose on Thursday and Sacramento on Friday.

Chris Hemsworth, the actor who plays Thor in the MCU, just shared his own personal rankings for his God-of-Thunder-centric films.

12 years after his initial introduction into the Marvel world, Hemsworth is still one of the franchise’s most important centerpieces with a future still ahead of him as the Asgardian superhero.

He also has the distinct honor of being the first MCU star to have four solo movies – a distinction that the Captain America franchise will also have once Captain America: Brave New World makes its debut in July 2024.

What Is Chris Hemsworth’s Favorite Thor Movie?

Marvel

In a video interview for British GQ, MCU stat Chris Hemsworth was asked to rank his four Thor movies “from dope to the dopest.”

At the top of his list is 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok with the film being his “favorite experience,” although he highlighted 2011’s Thor for being “the first time [he] ever played the character” as the film kickstarted his entire career:

“Ooh. Oh, this is tricky. ‘Ragnarok,’ I think was my favorite experience. And ‘Thor 1,’ because it was the first time I ever played the character, and it was the launch of the whole Marvel experience, and kind of my career. So, I hold them both in very high regard, and I love the other two. The other two were fantastic as well.”

He also paid tribute to the Avengers movies, reminiscing on how nobody “knew what it was gonna become” when the team first assembled after all of their Phase 1 solo films:

“And then the ‘Avengers’ movies, which have all been remarkable and insane. And I don’t think any of us knew what it was gonna become. I think each of us were making our solo films. Not sure if we were ever gonna make another solo film, or even be a part of the Avengers.”

Hemsworth took a trip down memory lane to a press tour he and the cast did in Rome, commenting on how he, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and other cast members enjoyed a night of drinking together when they realized the opportunity in front of them:

“And then when that all came together, I remember being in Rome on the press tour for ‘Avengers 1’ and realizing, ‘Ooh, I think this is gonna work and I think people are gonna love it.’ And I think Scarlett was there. Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston was there, and we’re all up late one night having a drink talking about it with Kevin Feige and a number of the other producers, and kind of pinching ourselves going, ‘This is, this is incredibly special and kind of a once in the lifetime opportunity.'”

This is far from the first time Hemsworth offered his thoughts on the MCU, as he recently shared an issue he had with 2023’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

He also recently opened up for the first time about the disappointing reviews from his most recent outing in the MCU, 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.

When Will Chris Hemsworth Return as Thor?

Although he has his conditions for a potential comeback, Chris Hemsworth remains willing to continue playing his role as the MCU expands further into the Multiverse Saga.

He’s also in the midst of an extended break from the big screen, which could mean it will be some time until fans see him wield Stormbreaker again for another massive battle.

Right now, the best bet for where Hemsworth will pop up again would be 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which recently had its release date delayed along with a handful of other theatrical releases from Marvel Studios.

He’s even teased the possibility that his next appearance as Thor could be one of his last, but after more than a decade playing this iconic role, he seems to be at peace with the time he’s spent in such a successful franchise.

All of Chris Hemsworth’s appearances as Thor are available to stream on Disney+.

The Flash hits theaters tomorrow, although in some countries the Andy Muschietti-directed film is already available for fans to enjoy. For weeks there have been screenings as a preview, although the vast majority were unfinished versions of the movie.

That is why much of the criticism received for the new Warner Bros. Discovery production based on the DC Comics characters is related to the CGI or VFX, in addition to the presence of Ezra Miller after the various conflicts surrounding the main star of the film. For the most part, those negative comments were directed towards the way in which Muschietti showed the Speed Force, a central element within the plot as well as in the comic it is inspired by, Flashpoint. However, it seems that it has nothing to do with the unfinished versions of the film that were shown.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

In an interview with Gizmodo, The Flash director finally broke silence on how he decided to present the Speed Force in the film:

“The idea, of course, is…we are in the perspective of the Flash. Everything is distorted in terms of lights and textures. We enter this ‘waterworld’ which is basically being in Barry’s POV. It was part of the design so if it looks a little weird to you that was intended.”

It is not the first time that DC productions have received this type of criticism, in fact it was one of the most debated points about Justice League in 2017. In recent years, failures in CGI or VFX within the genre have become commonplace, with Marvel Studios also being heavily criticized for low quality on those aspects.

What’s the Speed Force?

Warner Bros

The concept of the Speed Force is really one of the most complex but necessary within the DC mythology. It is an extra-dimensional force that gives speedsters the ability to use superhuman speed, surpassing even the speed of light, which is what has allowed Barry to travel through time in both The Flash and Flashpoint.

The Speed Force is also where the speedsters’ energy ends up once they die, in a similar concept that the one used in the Star Wars universe of being one with the force, adding more and more energy to that giant cluster.

Throughout the history of DC publications, the Speed Force has played central roles in story arcs such as Crisis on Infinite Earths. Through the Speed Force, Barry or any other Speedsters have access to multiple realities, so the introduction of this concept in the DCU means the possibility to connect different versions of their characters, such as Marvel Studios did in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

With a new canon to rule the DCU in development, the existence of parallel projects under the Elseworlds label is a good way to tell different stories with the same heroes, and the Speed Force could be the door to bring them together in the future.

Exciting times are ahead for Madden players, come Madden NFL 24 in August and just ahead of the season’s first whistle. For as long as one can remember and possibly since the introduction of online play, there have always been talks about Madden going cross-play.

Sadly, that day never came—until now, that is. For this one reason alone, players are more excited for the next installment of Madden than they were for previous titles. In this post, I‘ll dive into what we know so far about the rules of engagement for EA’s Madden 24 cross-play, who it will be available to, and how it will work for players.

Before heading further into the cross-play details, for those who don’t know: Cross-play is the feature where players from different platforms are able to play each other. For example, a player with an Xbox Series X/S will be able to scrimmage against opponents with a PlayStation 5.

Let’s get back to why we’re here…

Table of Contents

Is Madden NFL 24 Cross-Play & Available on All Platforms?

Yes, Madden 24 is cross-play and will be available from day one after the official drop. However, the cross-play feature will only be available for certain game modes and on certain platforms. The platforms that are cross-play compatible are as follows:

  • PlayStation 5,
  • Xbox Series, and
  • PC.

This is understandable, considering the upgraded technology of the newer-gen consoles and PCs and the advantages it gives these players. Also, the developers have carried this method out with FIFA 23’s cross-play features, so it comes as no surprise. However, EA has not established if the older generation consoles will be cross-play compatible with each other and if it will be allowed.

Related: What’s the Release Date of Madden NFL 24? – Answered

It would be a good idea, but it will be unlike EA to put time and effort into old-gen platforms when they’ve already made it clear all their focus and attention will be on improving the gameplay experience for current-gen consoles.

What Game Modes Will Be Cross-Play Compatible

There will be four game modes that will be cross-play ready on launch. They are as follows:

  • Head-to-Head,
  • Madden Ultimate Team (MUT),
  • Superstar KO, and
  • Superstar Showdown.

How Does Madden 24 Cross-Play Work?

Madden NFL 24 players who want to join the cross-play will be added to a cross-play matchmaking pool. After that, cross-play invites will be available in the abovementioned multiplayer modes. Players will be able to join and leave whenever they choose to. Additionally, you’ll be able to join your friend or friends on the same team as well as play against them in these game modes.

This should make Madden NFL 24 one of the more interesting titles in the series. The goal is obviously for players to experience as little downtime as possible. If EA’s FIFA 23 is anything to go by, we could be in for a rocky ride to the end of the campaign. Find out if Madden 24 will be coming out on your machine and read: What Platforms Will Madden NFL 24 Be Released On?

Sasha Calle is hoping to continue to play the role of Supergirl after being introduced as the superhero in The Flash.

The Young and the Restless alum plays Kara Zor-El in the DC film and expressed excitement at the prospect of continuing to tell her story in future movies.

“I love her so much and I feel her very deeply,” Calle told Entertainment Tonight in a recent interview. “I think this movie was a runway to a bigger story for her.”

As far as what Calle would like to see her character do next she says, “I just want to dive deeper into Kara and her feelings into her day to day. I would just love to see her in regular clothes, in human clothes. As a fan, the whole time that I was filming, I kept thinking, ‘What would she wear? What glasses would she wear?’”

Calle put herself in fans’ shoes and notes that audiences don’t get to meet Kara as her “human, realized self” and “as a fan, that would be something very cool.”

The future of Calle continuing to play Supergirl has not been decided yet, but ahead of the premiere of The Flash, the former Man of Steele, Henry Cavill, gave her his stamp of approval.

“I asked him, ‘Did I make you proud, cuz? Does Superman approve?’” Calle told EW recently about her encounter with Cavill. “And he was like, ‘Absolutely. You did a phenomenal job.’ I think, to me, that meant the world, because it’s Henry Cavill, Man of Steel.”

Speaking at Monte-Carlo Television Festival Sunday, cast members from the fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” expressed their feelings about the racist trolls who objected to the Prime Video show’s diverse and inclusive casting when it first launched.

Last month, Ismael Cruz Córdova, who plays the Elven warrior Arondir, told Variety that Prime Video provided an on-set therapist to help the actors deal with the racist backlash against its casting. He revealed it wasn’t just attacks on social media. “My phone got hacked. I had bank account attempts of being hacked. My PayPal got hacked. My friends got messages. I got death threats. I got things mailed to me. People found out my address. It was a lot of that,” Córdova recalled.

Asked by Variety at Monte-Carlo Television Festival on Sunday about how they viewed the racist trolls, the cast differed slightly in their response. Owain Arthur, who plays the Dwarven kingdom’s Prince Durin IV in the series, spoke with passion about the issue. “I mean, it is infuriating. Like, you go: ‘Oh, God, really? Are we still there as a human race?’ That drives me wild… The guys have been through a lot — to be on the receiving end of things — and I hope one day, we will, as a human race, just be one. I mean, it sounds kind of maybe pathetic or dramatic what I’m saying here, but, genuinely, just stop racism.”

Cynthia Addai-Robinson, who plays Míriel, Queen Regent of Númenor, expressed her desire to move on from the subject.

“What I’m looking forward to, as we move on to Season 2, is allowing that conversation to be in the past and just plow ahead,” she shared. “When you have progress, it’s like we’re not going to go backward from the things that we’ve established. I’m ready to acknowledge it and move on from it, because I think we’ve kind of said all there is to say, really. I know that I have.”

Addai-Robinson and Arthur were accompanied in Monaco by Lloyd Owen, who plays Númenor’s Captain Elendil, and Maxim Baldry, who plays his son, Isildur.

The cast are sworn to secrecy when it comes to Season 2, but they did share some pointers. Arthur said: “Darkness has fallen. Let’s say that. We’re all going through a big journey in Season 2. We know that Sauron is here.”

Baldry added: “I’d say it’s a little more action packed. There’s a lot more action.”

Arthur responded: “Yeah, it is certainly quicker and there’s more happening.”

“We all know that Sauron has been revealed at the end [of Season 1], and therefore what happens when that amount of evil is finally realized? Each person throughout the universe, throughout Tolkien’s world, is going to be affected by that,” Owen shared. “There’s always going to be a human choice as to what happens when you’re introduced to evil, and is there an inherent badness or darkness in you that will be revealed? Or will you move to the good side? So, everyone is going to be faced with a dilemma, a moral dilemma, and there are going to be some really difficult choices for each human to take.”

Asked whether there will be more on the father-son relationship between Elendil and Isildur, Owen shared that “every personal relationship is affected by obviously the political and the evil and how it changes and warps the mind.”

“Season 1 is really about an introduction,” Addai-Robinson stated. “You’re setting the stage for aspects of the story that are maybe a little bit more familiar to audiences, because we do know a little bit more of these next few things that happen, that will be part of Season 2… But there are a lot of people who have never read the books. They’ve never seen the movies. So that Season 1 setup really is, in my mind, it’s really for those people who are very new to Tolkien… So, Season 2, you’re going to see a lot of storyline start to come through.”

Nicolas Cage as Dracula in ‘Renfield,’ directed by Chris McKay. © 2023 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved.

Leave it up to Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage to really sink his teeth into the role of Dracula in Chris McKay’s ‘Renfield.’ In the dark comedy, things get bloody when Dracula’s lifelong assistant and familiar Renfield is tasked with finding food for his master.

The official synopsis for ‘Renfield’ is below:

“In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.”

The cast of ‘Renfield’ includes Nicolas Cage (‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’), Nicholas Hoult (‘The Menu’), Awkwafina (‘The Little Mermaid’), Ben Schwartz (‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2’), Brandon Scott Jones (‘Isn’t It Romantic’), Adrian Martinez (‘Measure of Revenge’), and Shohreh Aghdashloo (‘Run Sweetheart Run’).

‘Renfield’ premiered at the Overlook Film Festival on March 20, 2023. The film opened in theaters domestically on April 17, 2023.

Nicolas Cage Is The Main Attraction

There was no better choice than Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage. No stranger to creating unique characters on-screening, his portrayal of Dracula is bigger-than-life, overly dramatic, and perfect in every way. Even though the film is told through the lens of Renfield, Cage’s performance of Dracula steals every scene. Cage channeled Bela Lugosi and Elvis Presley as his inspiration for the iconic vampire, and it worked fantastically.

A Classic Tale With A Twist

The character of Renfield has long existed in Dracula’s history before Chris McKay’s iteration. Early films like 1922’s ‘Nosferatu’ and 1931’s ‘Dracula’ have included the character, as well as TV shows such as ‘Young Dracula.’

In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Renfield is described as a deranged and fanatic servant and familiar to Dracula. He was an inmate at the lunatic asylum overseen by Dr. John Seward. Renfield suffers from delusions that compel him to consume living creatures in hopes of obtaining their life force. Later on, Dracula would send him insects to consume.

In McKay’s movie, we see the story from Renfield’s perspective, who is still a servant and familiar to Dracula, but seeking ways to escape the toxic and co-dependent relationship with his narcissistic boss. His relationship with Rebecca (Awkwafina) adds to his motivation to be freed from Dracula’s grasp. Nicholas Hoult’s performance as Renfield carries the heart of the film, paired with exciting action sequences, which he performs effortlessly.

As an R-rated film, the horror-comedy includes exaggerated gore and violence, such as severed limbs and peeling faces.

The Star Wars universe has been part of recent Emmy conversations thanks to spinoff series like The Mandalorian and Andor. Back in 1985, the TV movie The Ewok Adventure did the same.

Centered on the beloved characters introduced in 1983’s Return of the Jedi, Ewok Adventure was the first television project from Star Wars creator George Lucas (the film was a theatrical release abroad, called Caravan of Courage, An Ewok Adventure). The screenplay came from Bob Carrau (who would go on to write 14 episodes of an Ewoks children’s TV series), based on Lucas’ story about a human family whose star cruiser crashes on the forest planet of Endor, stranding two children who enlist the fluffy but fierce, bear-like Ewoks to help them find their parents.

Warwick Davis reprised his Return of the Jedi role as Wicket the Ewok. It debuted as the ABC Sunday Night Movie on Nov. 25, 1984, and some radio stations broadcast an audio track simultaneously so that viewers could experience it in a sort of “surround sound.”

THR was a fan: “Ewok Adventure is sheer enchantment and excitement,” read the review. “The execution is technically lavish, offering big-screen entertainment value. Children should lap it up, and special effects wizardry should impress adult fantasy fans.”

That it did: The movie was Emmy nominated in 1985 for outstanding children’s program and earned a special juried award for its visual effects.

The Star Wars universe has been part

COPS have searched for a driver after a dog was seen shut inside a car full of barbed wire, leaving onlookers horrified.

The trapped pooch was spotted in a carpark in New South Wales, Australia, raising fears it could have been subjected to animal abuse.

Disturbing pictures of the incident then flooded social media – causing concern among locals and sparking a police probe.

Images appeared to show a distressed German Shepherd locked in a vehicle as the prickled lengths of steel surrounded the animal.

According to local reports, the sighting was at 10am near Caves Beach Surf Life Saving Club, about 80 miles north of Sydney.

The person who shared the pictures online claimed the cops and the RSPCA were called to the scene immediately.

However, by the time authorities got there the car had already left.

NSW police told News.com.au they located the owner of the motor later that day and found the dog in good condition.

A police spokesman said: “They have checked the dog and confirmed there were no injuries and that it was being well cared for.

“They have also been assured the wire has been permanently removed from the car.”

Cops refused to elaborate on the owner’s reasoning for the barbed wire.

Nevertheless, locals still remain horrified from the bizarre incident.

“That’s the most f***ed up thing I’ve seen,” a Facebook user said.

“This honestly makes me so sick to think people treat animals like this,” one added.

“This is such strange behaviour and very distressing to see. To be done in the middle of the day in a public place where people will clearly see. I really hope police can still contact them and have a word,” another remarked.

RSPCA NSW said they were helping cops with the investigation.

Katharine McPhee, 39, and David Foster, 73, enjoyed a lunch outing with their adorable son Rennie, 2, this week. The singer and music producer were photographed walking into a restaurant, where they ordered and ate in an outdoor seating area, with the tot, and were dressed in stylish outfits. The doting mom wore a leopard print over-the-shoulder top and jeans while the doting dad wore a black jacket over a white top and jeans.

Katharine and David’s latest lunch outing comes just a few weeks after they were seen on another family outing. They were walking outside in the Montecito, CA area and wore comfortable-looking clothing. Katharine opted for a dark blue button-down long-sleeved shirt over a peach and yellow tie-dye top, blue leggings, and sandals, and David opted for a white hoodie, gray sweatpants, and white sneakers. Little Rennie wore a black and white striped top and black pants with white sneakers.

Since Katharine and David are fairly private, their recent outings with Rennie have been getting a lot of attention. The couple welcomed their son, which is her first child and his sixth, in Feb. 2021, and have opened up about their journey in parenthood through various interviews.

“I’ve loved every single day,” David told  PEOPLE about spending time with his new bundle of joy in 2022. “It’s the standard thing of like, ‘Oh, well, you were so young when you had your children, and you were working day and night, you never saw them.’ And there is some truth to that, sadly, for my [older] kids. I was just working a lot. Even though I’m working a lot now, I’ll cancel anything just to hang with him. It’s just different.”

In a meeting in Beijing on Friday, China’s leader, Xi Jinping, traded warm smiles with Bill Gates and praised Mr. Gates as “the first American friend” he had met this year.

The encounters in Beijing between Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and his Chinese counterparts, starting on Sunday, are likely to feel noticeably chillier.

The high-level meetings are aimed at getting the U.S.-China relationship back on track, and many American business leaders have been pushing the Biden administration to try to restore some stability in one of the world’s most important bilateral relationships.

But for business leaders, and for officials on both sides, expectations for the meetings appear modest, with two main goals for the talks. One is to restore communication between the governments, which broke down this year after a Chinese surveillance balloon flew into U.S. airspace and Mr. Blinken canceled a visit scheduled for February. The other is to halt any further decline in the countries’ relationship.

There is already evidence of the impact of the fraying ties. Foreign direct investment in China has fallen to an 18-year low. A 2023 survey by the American Chamber of Commerce in China showed that companies still see the Chinese market as a priority, but that their willingness to invest there is declining.

“The economic relationship has become so dismal that any sign of progress is welcome, though expectations are low for any sort of a breakthrough,” said Jake Colvin, the president of the National Foreign Trade Council, which represents multinational businesses.

“The hope is that high-level dialogues like this can start to inject some certainty for business into an increasingly fraught and unpredictable trade relationship,” he said.

Still, as one of the world’s largest consumer markets and home to many factories that supply global businesses, China exerts a powerful pull. This year, as it eased its travel restrictions after three years of pandemic lockdowns, a parade of chief executives made trips to China, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase and Stephen Schwarzman of Blackstone.

On a visit to China this month, Elon Musk, the chief executive of Tesla and owner of Twitter, described the American and Chinese economies as “conjoined twins” and said he opposed efforts to split them. Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook, traveled to China in March and lauded the company’s “symbiotic” relationship with the nation.

Sam Altman, the leader of OpenAI, which makes the ChatGPT chatbot, appeared virtually at a conference in Beijing this month, saying American and Chinese researchers should continue to work together to counter the risks of artificial intelligence.

The tech industry, which has forged lucrative relationships with Chinese manufacturers and consumers, has warily watched Washington’s aggressive approach to China. While industry groups acknowledge the importance of moves to safeguard national security, they have urged the Biden administration to carefully calibrate its actions.

Wendy Cutler, a former diplomat and trade negotiator who is now vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute, said the United States and China might announce some small steps forward at the end of the meetings. The governments might agree, she said, to increase the paltry number of flights between their countries or the visas they are issuing to foreign visitors.

But both sides will have plenty of grievances to air, Ms. Cutler said. Chinese officials are likely to complain about U.S. tariffs on goods made in China and restrictions on U.S. firms selling coveted chip technology to China. American officials may highlight China’s deteriorating business environment and its recent move to bar companies that handle critical information from buying microchips made by the U.S. company Micron.

“I’m not expecting any breakthroughs, particularly on the economic front,” Ms. Cutler said, adding, “Neither side will want to be smiling.”

American officials hope Mr. Blinken’s visit paves the way for more cooperation, including on issues like climate change and restructuring the debt loads of developing countries. Other officials, including Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen, are considering visits to China this year, and Mr. Xi and President Biden may meet directly at either the Group of 20 meetings in Delhi in September or an Asia-Pacific economic meeting in San Francisco in November.

In recent months, Biden officials have tried to mend the rift between the countries by arguing for a more “constructive” relationship. They have echoed European officials in saying their desire is for “de-risking and diversifying” their economic relationships with China, not “decoupling.”

But trust between the governments has eroded, and Chinese officials appear to be skeptical of how much the Biden administration can do to restore ties.

The extensive U.S. restrictions on the semiconductor technology that can be shared with China, which were issued in October, continue to rankle officials in Beijing. The United States has added dozens of Chinese companies to sanctions lists for aiding the Chinese military and surveillance state, or circumventing U.S. restrictions against trading with Iran and Russia.

Biden administration officials are weighing further restrictions on China, including a long-delayed order covering certain U.S. venture capital investments. And the White House faces intense pressure from Congress to do more to crack down on national security threats emanating from Beijing.

Not all companies are pushing for improved ties. Some with less exposure to China have tried to reap political benefits in Washington from the growing competition with the country. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has repeatedly raised concerns about TikTok, the Chinese-owned video app that has proved a formidable competitor to Instagram.

“It’s really a dispute over the degree,” said James Lewis, a senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “How accommodating are you? How confrontational are you?”

How aggressively companies are resisting the tensions with China, Mr. Lewis said, is linked to their exposure to the country’s market.

“I think a lot of this has to do with your presence in China,” he said.

In a meeting in Beijing on Friday,

There is a reason for the Carlos Santana documentary, “Carlos,” to take its title not from the guitar legend’s last name and that of his eponymous band. The film, which received a gala world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, focuses more on Santana’s biographical details recounted previously in his 2014 memoir, “The Universal Tone,” than his illustrious career. Of course, music is inseparable from the life of a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer born into a musical family, but the documentary is more about wrestling with success, spirituality, addiction and childhood trauma from sexual abuse.

Filmmaker Rudy Valdez unfurls a chronological narrative, from Santana’s formative years in Tijuana, Mexico, to his triumphant 1999 “Supernatural” album, employing archives of photos, concert footage, talk-show appearances, home videos and a few newly conducted interviews, including a roundtable of Santana’s immediate family members. But amid the narrative progression Valdez has occasionally spliced in materials from earlier time periods as flashbacks, a poignant representation of memories that have haunted the guitarist throughout his 75 years.

Santana’s parents cast a long shadow over him. His father, José, played violin in a mariachi band. Young Carlos naturally learned to play the fiddle. Once exposed to guitar, though, he was immediately taken. He went down the rabbit hole from there, discovering B.B. King, Little Richard and the like, and completely shifting his taste. He crossed the U.S. border and while standing outside a musical instrument store admiring his new object of fascination, he also experienced his first brush with racism.

His father later found steady work in San Francisco, where Santana continued to chart his own path in music. The earliest known recording of him, dated 1966, shows the then-19-year-old in rehearsal. Over his parents’ objections, he soon became immersed in the music scene centered on The Fillmore, even as his high-school peers turned to more conventional career paths and his family needed money. Outside The Fillmore trying to sneak a peek, he caught the attention of promoter Bill Graham, who soon began booking the Santana Blues Band as an opening act for The Who and Steve Miller, among others, and as a go-to for filling in cancellations.

As their reputation soared in San Francisco, Santana and his band fielded interest from labels. He purposely blew an audition with Atlantic Records due to his desire to work with Columbia’s Clive Davis, who presided over the front row at Saturday’s premiere. Davis now serves as chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment, the production outfit behind this documentary. Santana attributed his success to the impresario, both in the film and during the rousing hourlong post-screening live set at the Beacon Theatre. Interestingly, the “Milli Vanilli” documentary, produced by third-party MTV, which also premiered at Tribeca, presents Davis in a vastly different light.

Graham began booking Santana and his band at increasingly sizable music festivals around the country, culminating in a set at the storied Woodstock in 1969 a couple of weeks before the release of Santana’s debut album. He gave his first royalty check to his mother toward the purchase of a new home and a refrigerator. He said the ability to fulfill a promise to her was better than the accolades he amassed throughout his career.

The band played 312 concerts in one year, which, along with the sex and drugs, caused irreconcilable fissures. There have been 23 iterations of Santana, the band. Valdez illustrates this with the same verse sung by three different singers on separate occasions. Between 1972 and 1982, the guitarist followed guru Sri Chinmoy and experienced a spiritual awakening, cutting his hair and dressing all in white. This influenced his musical direction as well, alienating some bandmates.

Throughout the documentary, Santana credits many musical influences, but he has gone through significant stylistic paradigm shifts. In the absence of critics and historians providing commentary and appraisal, “Carlos” glosses over items of significant public interest. Snippets of Santana jamming inside his home studio seem marginally interesting, but also extremely niche beside iconic public performances such as the 1982 Concert of the Americas set amid a storm.

Nevertheless, there are profound and powerful anecdotes, such as Santana describing taking a shower and visualizing the shame associated with being a sexual abuse survivor going down the drain, that elevate “Carlos” from the garden-variety music biographical puff pieces produced by record labels and/or available on various streaming platforms.

Neal Kirby, son of the seminal Marvel Comics artist and writer Jack Kirby, has shared a statement expressing his distaste with Disney+’s new documentary spotlighting the life of Stan Lee.

Credited as one of the leading creators of Marvel Comics, Lee’s life and legacy are given a detailed exploration through the doc, which premiered on the streamer on June 16. Kirby released a skeptical statement about the film through the Twitter account of his daughter, Jillian Kirby.

“It should be noted and is generally accepted that Stan Lee had a limited knowledge of history, mythology, or science,” Kirby wrote. “On the other hand, my father’s knowledge of these subjects, to which I and many others can personally attest, was extensive. Einstein summed it up better; ‘More the knowledge, lesser the ego. Lesser the knowledge, more the ego.’”

Kirby’s lengthy denouncement continues by calling into question Lee’s involvement in the creation of many Marvel characters in the early-to-mid 1960s. “You will see Lee’s name as a co-creator on every character, with the exception of the Silver Surfer, solely created by my father. Are we to assume Lee had a hand in creating every Marvel character? Are we to assume that it was never the other co-creator that walked into Lee’s office and said, ‘Stan, I have a great idea for a character!’ According to Lee, it was always his idea.”

Kirby also highlights that Lee took major credit for creating the Fantastic Four “with only one fleeting reference” to his father. He also claims that the Fantastic Four was initially created by Jack for DC in the “Challengers of the Unknown” comic. Kirby goes on by stating that Ben Grimm (The Thing) was named after his father’s real name, Benjamin, and Sue Storm was named after his daughter, Susan.

Some stories prove predictable, and that’s the case with the latest edition of MarvelBlog News.

Frankly, we saw this update coming a mile away.

Marvel Resets the Table

Disney+ Day Logo

The Walt Disney Company, the corporate owner of all things Marvel, has entered uncharted territory.

Disney will shatter its record for revenue during fiscal 2023. It’s currently pacing for $90.7 billion after earning $82.7 billion for fiscal 2022.

This fact may surprise you, as Disney has faced a plethora of negative headlines over the past 15 months or so.

disney investors day 2020

Photo: Disney

The company’s margins have decreased slightly as Disney pays for its Fox acquisition and recovers from the pandemic’s financial setbacks.

Simultaneously, Disney has faced a ridiculous battle with Florida, a state where it’s figuratively the golden goose of tourism.

In Hollywood, the Writers Guild of America strike came at an unfortunate time, as Disney faced several setbacks with its release schedule.

Source: Marvel Studios

Also, Disney has experienced a stunning batch of headlines due to two of its most recent hires.

Tenoch Huerta, who portrayed Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, faced a stunning allegation this past week.

María Elena Ríos, a musician and activist, accused Huerta of being a “violator and sexual predator.”

Source: María José Alvarado Burgos/ Marvel

I should add that Heurta has denied these allegations in the strongest possible terms. Even so, this must feel like déjà vu all over again at Marvel.

The studio was already facing a dilemma with Jonathan Majors, the star of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the upcoming Loki season two.

Jonathan Majors Kang

A former acquaintance of Majors accused him of acts of violence. While nobody has commented yet, rumors persist that Majors won’t return to the MCU.

Similarly, Marvel must investigate the Huerta situation and choose how to proceed.

Source: Marvel/ Funko

The studio obviously had big things planned for the character of Namor. Now, Marvel may need to recast this role as well.

Marvel’s Precarious Situation

Source: Marvel

What I’m about to discuss next pales in comparison with these criminal allegations against two noted actors.

Still, Marvel faces other challenges as well. For example, the Blade project has proved disastrous.

Blade Midnight Suns

Photo: Marvel’s Midnight Suns Twitter

Before Disney ever got involved, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. created a trilogy of Blade films starring Wesley Snipes.

When Marvel planned an MCU addition of Blade, everything fell apart, which is odd because the studio nailed the casting.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Chelsea Lauren/Variety/Shutterstock

Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali has already proven his Marvel skills in Netflix’s Luke Cage.

Ali would be an ideal Blade…if Marvel could just get someone to write a decent script. It’s been an ongoing issue for four years now.

Source: Marvel Studios

The latest disaster last year caused Kevin Feige and his team to tear up the old script and start from scratch with new talent behind the camera.

Frankly, Marvel needed to delay this project, but I suspect they feared Ali might walk if that happened.

Mahershala Ali in Coat for IMDb

Mahershala Ali. Photo: IMDb

So, everyone pushed forward on a rushed production until the writer’s strike gave the studio an out. And that’s the big story this week.

At the end of the month, the actors could join the writers on the picket line. A previously written script can theoretically still film.

Source: Marvel/ Marvel Studios

Nobody can produce anything without actors, though. We’re looking at an extended Hollywood shutdown if/when the actors strike.

Marvel has already faced difficulties with strike teams of writers disrupting the filming for projects like Daredevil: Born Again.

Source: Marvel Studios

More of that would create a high-stress summer. For this reason, Disney has done what it needed. It just updated its release schedule.

Let’s Talk about the Marvel Date Changes

Captain America New World Order

Source: Marvel Studios/ Marvel

Last week, Disney announced a title change for its fourth Captain America story.

Captain America: Brave New World was supposed to debut in May 2024.

Disney has shown some surprising optimism here, as the Sam Wilson film is still aiming for a July 2024 release. I’m… skeptical.

Source: Marvel

Should the actors join the writers in striking, Disney will likely delay this film again. But it does have some wiggle room.

I say this because Brave New World takes the former release date for Thunderbolts, which has pulled back until December 2024.

Theoretically, Disney can slot Captain America 4 anywhere in that gap from July through December as needed.

Sam Wilson Monogram

Photo: Monogram International, Inc.

However, studios prefer to release titles in the summer, early November, or December. It’d take a lot for Disney to move away from that strategy.

Notably, Disney took a different approach with Deadpool 3. This film has moved up to May 2024 to replace Brave New World.

Source: Fox/ Marvel

I don’t want to speculate wildly here, but I can’t help but wonder whether Ryan Reynolds’ creativity and ad-libbing make this move possible.

Among the various movies filming right now, Deadpool 3 strikes me as the best positioned to overcome the lack of a writer onset.

Of course, that opening may look ridiculous in a year, but Reynolds’ wit helps a lot here.

Source: @VancityReynolds

With Blade, Disney used the writer’s strike as cover to delay the film until early 2025. Frankly, the project needed that gap. It’s still a mess.

With Blade in February 2025, Disney finally settled on May 2025 for Fantastic Four.

Source: Marvel Studios

Most analysts expect Marvel to announce the cast for this project at Comic-Con next month.

The project will need to start filming almost immediately after the strike ends to make that date. Marvel must have everything ready.

According to The Flash‘s director, some of the DC movie’s “terrible” CGI may have actually been intentional.

Despite being initially praised by critics on the route to release, one of the main four criticisms targeted at The Flash was its mediocre-to-awful CGI.

More and more, the CGI in superhero movies has been increasingly criticized by audiences, with Marvel Studios facing particular backlash as VFX artists claim the comic book studio has become “horrible” to work for.

The Flash’s Big CGI Problem Explained by Director

DC

During an interview with Gizmodo, The Flash director Andy Muschietti defended the movie’s CGI after certain shots were criticized by some fans for being “terrible” as the flick speeds its way into theaters.

Quoting a snippet from its review of The Flash, The Hollywood Handle praised elements of the film but criticized the “terrible CGI and weak third act:”

“‘The Flash’ is overall fun, action-packed and a good time in theaters, but the terrible CGI and a weak third act makes this movie just another simple superhero movie.”

Beardo Benjo even put the VFX on par with “PS3 cutscene level,” zoning in particularly on some of the “full-on CGI humans” – seemingly referencing that of the digitally-created cameos from late actors:

“Saw ‘The Flash’ yesterday

It has some of the most hilariously terrible CGI I’ve seen in years & I don’t mean silly little details that most people wouldn’t notice.

I mean full-on CGI humans that are front & center, uncanny valley PS3 cutscene level stuff its bonkers.”

Some went as far as to compare the CGI to that of The CW’s The Flash show, with @StarkillerSneed calling it “absolutely awful,” much like what was showcased in the later seasons of the series:

“To be fair, they did make a reference to the late seasons of ‘Flash’ by making the CGI absolutely awful”

Specifically criticizing the visuals behind The Flash‘s Speed Force cameos, @MyTimeToShineH proclaimed how they “actually look worse” than the awful cover-up CGI of Henry Cavill’s mustache in 2017’s Justice League.

Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for The Flash.

Focusing in on the movie’s opening which saw the Flash saving many babies from a toppling building, director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti explained how that was actually done on purpose.

At first, Barbara jokingly answered, “No, we used all real babies,” before Andy tagged in to note that the “distorted” look was actually “part of the design” to help recreate Barry Allen’s superspeed perspective:

“The idea, of course, is…we are in the perspective of the Flash. Everything is distorted in terms of lights and textures. We enter this ‘waterworld’ which is basically being in Barry’s POV. It was part of the design so if it looks a little weird to you that was intended.”

Others Reasons Why The Flash’s CGI Sucks

As discussed before, superhero movies, which were once regarded as impressive visual spectacles, have recently come to be panned for their lackluster CGI and disappointing digital designs, especially in the post-pandemic era.

One of the many reasons behind this comes down to the insane content output, with the MCU set to release three movies and three series this year while DC comes out with four blockbusters, VFX houses have more on their plate than ever.

Whether The Flash‘s “terrible” CGI was actually as intentional as Andy Muschietti claims is unclear, as the filmmaker may simply be looking for ways to justify these moments which may not look quite as good as they could.

With The Flash reportedly made on a massive $220 million production budget already, making it one of DC’s most expensive movies ever, perhaps the studio simply wasn’t looking to cash out any more money to improve these scenes.

While the Speedster solo movie certainly presented some cases of impressive visuals, others looked truly awful, most notably, several of the movie’s superhero cameos simply appeared totally unrealistic and unconvincing.

The Flash is playing now in theaters worldwide.

Gal Gadot is going from superhero to super spy in the action-packed first trailer for the international espionage thriller “Heart of Stone.”

Gadot was joined by co-stars Jamie Dornan and Alia Bhatt at Netflix’s Tudum fan festival in São Paulo, Brazil, where the trio debuted the film’s first trailer. The footage features heart-stopping stunts, like Gadot’s Rachel Stone — an intelligence operative for a shadowy global peacekeeping agency — skydiving from a death-defying height.

Stone’s steely demeanor and adrenaline-junkie habits are explained as her boss (Sophie Okonedo) warns, “You know what you signed up for. No friends, no relationships… What we do is too important. When governments fail, the only thing left is the Charter.”

Stone and Dornan’s Parker are among the organization’s highly-trained agents, who have no political leanings or national allegiances and are described as “working together to keep peace in a turbulent world.”

But when hacker Keya Dhawan (Bhatt, as the Bollywood A-lister stars in her first major Hollywood movie) steals the agency’s most valuable – and dangerous – weapon (a technological core that “gives the Charter its power,” it’s “heart,” if you will), Stone sets off on an epic, globe-trotting adventure to save the day and clear her name.

“Heart or no heart, I’m coming for you,” Gadot snarls into a cell phone as her own warning to Bhatt.

Directed by Tom Harper from a script by Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder, the intense footage also features major action set pieces including a motorcycle chase through the Alps and cars speeding through the streets of Lisbon. Gadot is also seen flying through the air twice — first, paragliding off a snowy embankment and later, doing some extreme skydiving.

“Chance of success just plummeted,” a Charter agent (played by Matthias Schweighöfer) cautions while Stone performs the dangerous maneuver. “Only because you have no imagination,” she shoots back, as she manages to tumble onto her target.

In addition to bringing her action star skills (refined in “Wonder Woman,” and soon to return to the “Fast and Furious” franchise) to the table, Gadot also produced the film under her Pilot Wave banner with her producing partner and husband Jaron Varsano. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are also billed as producers, along with Mockingbird’s Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn. Patty Whitcher, Harper and Rucka serve as executive producers.

“Heart of Stone” begins streaming on August 11.

Netflix nabbed worldwide rights to the project in 2021, marking another partnership between the streamer and Skydance, after teaming for “The Old Guard” with Charlize Theron, Ryan Reynolds’ “6 Underground” and “The Adam Project,” directed by Shawn Levy. Gadot and Netflix have their own strong ties, with the superstar set to appear in two sequels to “Red Notice,” as the 2021 action comedy is one of the streamer’s most-watched movies of all time.

[The following contains vague spoilers for The Flash (movie) and The Flash (TV show)]

If you’re one of the vast majority of Americans who did not go see The Flash this weekend but still wanted to read spoilers about its already infamous deluge of weird, CG-heavy cameo appearances, you may have heard that actor Teddy Sears shows up as Jay Garrick—a.k.a. the first Flash from the comics, with the Hermes hat and stuff—reprising a role he played on The CW’s Flash TV show.

The thing about this cameo is that it doesn’t make a lick of goddamn sense: Not only are the other cameos mostly references to DC superhero movies, but Sears didn’t even really play Jay Garrick on The Flash. He was a villain pretending to be Jay Garrick. So they threw in one cameo from the hit Flash TV show, where Ezra Miller’s version of the Flash canonically got the name “the Flash” when he made a cameo of his own, and they chose a confusing fake version of a different character and and not Grant Gustin, the freakin’ Flash himself?

Well, here’s the other thing about that cameo: It’s not Teddy Sears at all. It is, as TVLine puts it, “no actor of note” (take that, unnamed actor). TVLine talked to Sears himself who said that it sure “looks like” his face, but it’s not. He said that people kept telling him he was in the new Flash movie, but, he says, “I’m pretty sure I would have remembered shooting a major DC Studios film.” TVLine says “well-placed sources” on both the TV and film side of DC confirm that it’s also “absolutely not archival footage” of Sears on The Flash, meaning he didn’t film anything new and they didn’t reuse anything old—so it’s definitely not Teddy Sears.

Which actually makes the cameo even more bizarre. The other cameos are famous people in famous roles, with archival footage and one big CG inside joke for superhero movie nerds, but then they just went ahead and picked some guy for some other version of the Flash? James Gunn is co-running DC Studios now, surely he could’ve put his feelings about the Arrowverse aside for an actual cameo from Grant Gustin if they wanted another famous version of the Flash, or pull a Spider-Verse and merge live-action and animation for a cameo from Michael Rosenabum’s Flash.

Someone is going to write a book about the Flash movie at some point, and we’re excited for the chapter on this one specific thing.

ABC New Studios is getting ready for its Hulu debut by releasing four docuseries on the streaming platform this summer, each one with a focus on true crime.

The first to premiere is The Ashley Madison Affair, a three-part docuseries set to stream on July 7th. Ashley Madison was a popular dating app for people looking to discreetly have extramarital affairs, which ended up becoming quite the scandal. As described by ABC News Studios, “The docuseries tells the story of the hackers’ unmet demand, a data breach, and the catastrophic fallout. Upon the exposé-style demise of Ashley Madison, the public soon discovered that perhaps the site’s unfaithful users were not the only ones with a secret.”

On July 11th, Betrayal: The Perfect Husband premieres on Hulu and is based on a podcast of the same name. The docuseries covers the events surrounding reality television producer Jenifer Faison after she learned her husband Spencer Herron was sexually assaulting his high school students. The three-part docuseries “is a tale of earth-shattering discoveries, a victim’s bravery, and a woman’s quest to reclaim her life against all odds.”

Next on the list is Mother Undercover, a four-part docuseries featuring mothers who protect or get justice for their children by conducting their own undercover tactics. Each episode showcases a different mother whose child was the victim of murder, international kidnapping, mass suicide, and judicial corruption. “The series showcases the strength and resilience of these women who give new meaning to the saying ‘A mother’s love knows no bounds’.”

And lastly, the three-part series Demons and Saviors will premiere on August 3rd. This docuseries explores the case of Christina Boyer, nicknamed “poltergeist girl” due to her alleged telekinetic abilities. In 1992, she was convicted of murdering her three-year-old daughter. To this day, she still maintains her innocence. “Exploring Christina’s troubled upbringing, her alleged telekinetic abilities, and the questions that remain about the death of her daughter, Demons and Saviors investigates what is the conspiracy and what is the truth.”

The second day of the Beyond Wonderland electronic dance music festival at The Gorge Amphitheater in George, Washington has been canceled after shooting deaths at a nearby campground.

Two people were killed at the campgrounds on Saturday night and three others were wounded, including the shooter, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office. The shooter fired randomly at a crowd of people, then fled. He was later apprehenced.

“Due to the incident that took place in the overflow camping area last night, we regret to inform you that Day 2 of Beyond Wonderland at the Gorge has been canceled,” Beyond Wonderland said. “We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the local authorities and staff who acted quickly to manage the situation. Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to the family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic event.”

Saturday’s lineup featured artists Dillon Francis and Flosstradamus, and Sunday would have had performances by Marshmello and Afrojack.

The Saturday show kept going after the shooting incident, but concertgoers were warned to avoid the campgrounds.

“Please avoid the Gorge Gate H campgrounds area as it is closed due to an incident that has been handled by local authorities. There is no current danger to festival goers or the campgrounds,” the festival said in a tweet Saturday night.

Scandoval is taking over the entire Bravo-verse.

Months after Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix discovered her boyfriend of nine years, Tom Sandoval was having an affair with her best friend, Raquel Leviss, another Bravo reality star came forward with her own experience with the 28-year-old former beauty pageant contestant.

During a recent taping of the Giggly Squad podcast, Summer House star Paige DeSorbo claimed Leviss had eyes for her boyfriend, Craig Conover, well before she allegedly started hooking up with Sandoval. DeSorbo and Conover first went public with their relationship in October 2021.

According to DeSorbo, the whole thing went down at costar Hannah Berner’s wedding in May 2022, which Leviss attended with Shahs Of Sunset star Nema Vand, per one TikTok clip. “I literally survey the whole fucking room, I clock Craig at the bar, and I watch Raquel leave the dance floor and walk over to Craig,” DeSorbo said. “I’m standing there, and I turn to literally everyone around me, and I was like, ‘I don’t trust this bitch, I do not trust her,’ and everyone was like, ‘Oh my God, no, she’s so sweet, and she would never,’ and I fucking knew it.”

Though Paige DeSorbo didn’t reveal what Leviss said to Conover, it’s safe to assume the Summer House star believes the interaction was less-than-innocent.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

During the Vanderpump Rules reunion, which aired earlier this month, Leviss admitted to sleeping with Sandoval at Scheana Shay’s wedding in August 2022—the same weekend she shared her controversial kiss with Tom Schwartz. Furthermore, Leviss admitted to sleeping with Sandoval in Madix’s home while Madix was attending her grandmother’s funeral.

However, one of the most unexpected reveals was Leviss’ claim that she asked Sandoval to join his relationship with Madix as a third partner. “I even suggested, I was like, ‘What would Ariana think of having me as an addition?’” Leviss told a producer. “And he was like, ‘No, no, no, no, she would not be into that.’”

Following the taping of the reunion in April, Raquel Leviss checked into a mental health facility. “Raquel and her family decided months before the relationship was discovered that she needed mental health treatment and ultimately decided she would enter a voluntary facility for mental health counseling,” a rep said in a statement, per Page Six and Entertainment Tonight.

Shortly after the reunion aired, Ariana Madix was asked by paparazzi if she feels for Leviss “a little bit, even” following the intense backlash. Madix replied, “Sure, yeah.”

Four people have died in a three-car collision on a major highway in southern Nova Scotia.

RCMP say they were called to the scene of a crash on Highway 103 near Maitland, about eight kilometres east of Bridgewater, on Saturday evening.

Investigators say the crash occurred when a west-bound Ford Escape crossed the centre of the road and collided with an east-bound Toyota Tacoma, and seconds later, a Honda Civic, also travelling east-bound, crashed into the Tacoma.

The driver of the Escape, a 71-year-old man from Bridgewater, and his two 66-year-old female passengers all died as a result of the collision.

The driver and sole occupant of the Tacoma, a 31-year-old man from Chester Basin, was also killed in the crash. An RCMP collision analyst went to the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

All is not well at Reddit: in response to new charges for third-party Reddit apps, a vast number of subreddits have recently gone dark and locked out visitors. It means users are cut off, Google web searches are suffering, and people are looking for alternatives that can offer a similar Reddit-like resource.

That’s where this list comes in: we’ve scoured the web to find the best Reddit alternatives that you can check out right now, if you’re unable to access your favorite subreddit – or if your opinion of Reddit has soured over the whole affair.

It’s worth saying at the outset that nothing is quite like Reddit – in scope, style, or design. There’s no exact Reddit clone out there. Nevertheless, there are alternatives that can fill some of the Reddit-sized hole you might be struggling with at the moment, and you might actually end up preferring these alternatives to “the front page of the internet”.

1. Discord

Plenty of Reddit refugees are finding a home on Discord, particularly gamers – there are a lot of gaming communities on Discord, besides servers dedicated to topics around music, science and technology, entertainment, and more. If you don’t find a server that suits you, or you just want to chat with a small group of friends, you can set up your own server.

Compared to Reddit, Discord is more of a chatroom and less of a forum (if you’ve used Slack, it’s that). The emphasis is more on interacting with your fellow users and less on posting links and memes as individual threads – but if it’s the sense of community and discussion that you’re missing from Reddit, then Discord could be the ideal alternative.

2. Beehaw

Beehaw

Beehaw is relatively new and relatively small at the moment, but it’s one of the closest approximations of what Reddit is that you’re going to find, and well worth investigating as a Reddit replacement. The interface even looks a lot like Reddit, albeit without a lot of the on-screen features and furniture that build up over almost two decades of operation.

Have a read of the Beehaw mission statement and you’ll see the platform is committed to avoiding the “hate speech” and “disinformation” that’s prevalent elsewhere. The communities available right now cover everything from neurodivergence and people of color to literature and gardening, so you’re sure to find something of interest here.

3. Slashdot

Slashdot

Slashdot is one of the best-known and most well-established news aggregators on the web – it’s been around since the late 1990s, and it’s amassed a loyal following in that time. In terms of the articles you’ll see posted, they’re mostly related to technology, but there are also sections for science and entertainment, so you’re always going to have plenty to read.

In the style of Reddit, stories and links that are posted come with comments and conversations underneath, so if you’re looking for somewhere to discuss the news of the day as well as find it, Slashdot fits the bill. The site also offers a job board covering tech and science, as well as a well-stocked software download library covering all platforms.

4. Hacker News

Hacker News

If you’re primarily using Reddit as a way of finding out what’s going on on the internet, then check out Hacker News as an alternative. It’s a simple, unfussy site – just one list of trending articles of interest – but it always brings up interesting content. It’s especially good for articles around technology, so it should appeal to the readers of TechRadar.

There is some user input as well, because comments and discussions can be added below articles, and comments themselves can be ranked as well as the stories themselves. If you find something of note on the wilds of the web, you can submit it for consideration too. While Hacker News is by no means a complete Reddit replacement, it does plug a gap.

5. 9Gag

9Gag

If you’re into Reddit mainly for the memes then 9Gag has you covered: it’s not particularly sophisticated, but there’s plenty to explore here in a plethora of categories: the list of sections on the left includes anime, pets, technology, sports, movies, and superhero, so you get the idea. It’s perfect if you just want to casually waste a bit of time on the internet.

Be warned that there’s a fair amount of adult content on 9Gag too, though it’s hidden behind a sensitivity warning and is easy enough to avoid. It’s definitely a busy community too, with most posts accompanied by a flurry of comments and votes – it matches up with Reddit in terms of how busy it is, and how much interaction there is from the users.

6. Bluesky

Bluesky Social

You could see Bluesky as both a Reddit alternative and a Twitter alternative so that you can replace two apps at once. However, the social platform isn’t yet open to the public: to start using it, you’ll need to get an invite from someone who is already a user, or join the waiting list and be patient. As of yet, it’s not clear when it’ll be opened up to everyone.

It’s very Twitter-like in its operation, with a micro-blogging structure and options to post, share, like, and follow. You can see what the people you’re following are posting, or switch over to see what’s trending on the Bluesky network. It will be interesting to see how Bluesky scales up – and monetizes – but for now, it’s refreshingly calm.

7. Digg

Digg

Web historians will know that Digg and Reddit have plenty of shared history, both starting in the mid-2000s. Once very Reddit-like, Digg is now more of a curated news aggregator than a user forum: If you normally use Reddit to discover interesting and trending articles from across the web, then Digg will fulfill the same function for you very well indeed.

Load up the site and you’ll see you can browse links in a variety of categories: news, video, gaming, culture, tech, and more. There’s also a long reads section. All these categories pull in links from around the web, as well as original Digg articles, and you’ll find that Digg does a good job of surfacing some of the most interesting content on the web.

“How Stella Got Her Groove Back” is known for steamy scenes between Stella, a stern stockbroker played by Angela Bassett, and a young Jamaican man half her age. At the Tribeca Festival on Saturday, Bassett reflected on filming those intimate moments alongside Taye Diggs as her love interest, explaining the one responsibility her co-star shouldered: “He had to fulfill a Black woman’s fantasy.”

Bassett and the film’s director, Kevin Sullivan, were at the festival to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the romance based on the novel by Terry McMillan.

As Bassett entered the SVA Theater in a tangerine-colored suit and a feathered top, the audience erupted in applause and cheers with one fan shouting, “I love you!” The conversation touched on her co-stars, including Diggs and Whoopi Goldberg, the importance of filming in Jamaica and the legacy Bassett aimed to leave.

With Torell Shavone Taylor moderating, Bassett began by recognizing McMillan, who with Ron Bass wrote the screenplay, and praising the costume designs of Ruth Carter, with whom Bassett worked closely on the “Black Panther” franchise.

Bassett was always Sullivan’s choice to play Stella. He explained how a worldwide search led the filmmakers to cast Diggs as Winston Shakespeare, the 20-year-old hunk Stella gets involved with. Sullivan had seen Diggs performing on Broadway in “Rent,” and during rehearsals, the director would ask Diggs to sing to Bassett, to help with nerves and strengthen their chemistry.

“It was important for me to make the love scenes from a woman’s point of view,” Sullivan added. “It was not Winston’s story. It was Stella’s story.”

The romantic comedy was Sullivan’s directorial debut, and it later swept the 1999 NAACP Image Awards with wins for lead actress, supporting actress and motion picture. Bassett, who is known for powerful performances of memorable women in “What’s Love Got to Do It” and “Waiting to Exhale,” said she tried to find a balance between boldness and emotional vulnerability.

“Whenever I take on a character, you’re looking for the totality of them and who they represent and what they are about, what struggles they’re going through,” Bassett said. “It’s not one- dimensional, and often throughout history we as Black women have been seen that way.”

Getting Whoopi Goldberg to play Stella’s friend, Delilah, was a top priority. Bassett was a fan of the comedian, who signed on after Sullivan went to her home and spoke with her about the film. His favorite scene: after Delilah learns she has liver cancer, the friends share a playful moment in the hospital jamming to Marvin Gaye and giggling at old memories. The two had undeniable camaraderie and sisterhood, Bassett said, adding, “The scene when she passes, I felt that, for real, at her funeral because she was such a dear friend.”

Though the novel was set in Jamaica, the studio initially wanted to film in Mexico, where crews and infrastructure were already in place. But Sullivan worried the cultural connection could be lost. By establishing a Jamaica-based crew and overcoming challenges like poor infrastructure, Sullivan said, the film “came in on time and under budget.” Bassett added that tourism even rose on the island, with audiences eager to find a Winston Shakespeare for themselves.

Most recently, Bassett played the valiant Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” for which she received an Oscar nomination. She also stars as a first responder in the Fox TV series “9-1-1.” When asked about the legacy she hopes to leave, she said she felt privileged to play characters who are brilliant, courageous and sensual and who represent Black women as multifaceted beings.

“I would hope that I illuminated the human experience,” Bassett said.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn apparently demanded one change be made to Cosmo the Space Dog before her appearance in the MCU threequel.

After first being teased back in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Cosmo was finally properly introduced as a member of the Guardians team during last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

The Russian canine cosmonaut was brought to life by Oscar-nominee Maria Bakalova, as the character was gender-bent from her comic counterpart.

This was not the only major change made to the character, even in the MCU, with the Cosmo audiences saw in Guardians 3 not even being the same breed of dog that was first introduced to the franchise in James Gunn’s Marvel debut.

James Gunn Made 1 Major Change to Cosmo

After Cosmo the Dog was reintroduced to audiences in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, director James Gunn asked for one change to the character for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Marvel Studios

In a conversation with Befores & Afters, Framestore visual effects supervisor Stephane Naze (who worked on Guardians 3) revealed Gunn asked that the “big antennae” on Cosmo’s collar in The Holiday Special be gone in the intergalactic threequel:

“We came with a lot of different concepts for the speaker device. We had lights moving, and wavy curves, and different things. Interestingly, for the ‘Holiday Special,’ we actually had big antennae on the collar. Afterwards, James said, ‘That was good for the ‘Holiday Special,’ but not for the future. Let’s go for a different design.’”

Cosmo 2
Marvel Studios

Naze then went into what it was like creating a photorealistic dog, but also one that work a space suit and talked. She remarked it was key that Cosmo felt like a “realistic dog, but you had to feel the actor behind it:”

“James was very, very keen to keep the performance of the actress. He said, ‘I want to keep the vibe, I want to feel the actress in the character.’ So, it had to be a realistic dog, but you had to feel the actor behind it. Plus, it’s a dog talking through a speaker device. No lip sync, nothing. And then, it still had to be photoreal.”

The VFX veteran said that they did not “incorporate anything” too “cartoon or humanoid,” as it would “completely break the spirit of this character:”

“What we said to [production visual effects supervisor] Stef Ceretti and to [director] James Gunn, was, ‘Okay, you know what? We have to be photorealistic, and that’s it. I don’t think we have to incorporate anything being cartoon or humanoid. If we do, it will completely break the spirit of this character.’”

When it came to the space suit Cosmo would wear, Nazer lamented that ” the fact you had the dog with a spacesuit helps in terms of optimization,” because the VFX team did not need to go through the arduous process of rendering Cosmo’s fur:

“I will be honest, the fact you had the dog with a spacesuit helps in terms of optimization. Because, the groom underneath doesn’t exist. We didn’t need to deal with that groom. The spacesuit itself was handled by CFX. We had a lot of conversations about thickness and rigidity. We looked at cosmonauts, how they moved, how thick their suits were. We would start with what was realistic, but then we needed to make it look cool visually, too, to see certain folds. It’s also heavily art-directed in terms of how it moves. I mean, it’s a dog in a spacesuit!”

Was the Cosmo Change Worth It?

Of course, the removal of this small antenna ultimately was not the end of the world, but it is minute changes such as this that can make a world of difference.

The removal of this tiny detail creates an even more streamlined silhouette for Cosmo, which is a heavy focus when designing a ‘super suit’ in the MCU.

It is funny to look back and see that, like many heroes at Marvel Studios, even the adorable space-faring Labrador Retriever mix got the kind of costume upgrade many of the other characters see from project to project.

Now, going forward (as Cosmo is now a full-fledged member of the Guardians team) it will be interesting to see what the canine cadet looks like in future titles.

This white space suit will likely be left in the dust, as the Guardians got their new blue-and-maroon uniforms seen in Vol. 3‘s post-credits scene.

However, the cosmonaut uniform will always be looked back on fondly, being the first real look the character sported in her proper big-screen debut.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is playing in theaters worldwide now.

After nearly a decade of bouncing around different stages of development, DC’s film adaptation of The Flash is finally making its run through theaters. As seems to be the case with every DC movie, the film certainly has its die-hard fans as well as plenty of naysayers. The Flash has been embroiled in controversy for a while now, largely as a result of the actions of its star Ezra Miller. The movie is a multiverse and time-traveling romp that features the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, among other DC fan favorites, as well as Sasha Calle stepping into the role of Supergirl for the first (and hopefully not the last) time.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

If you’ve been a fan of The Flash for a while now, whether it be because of the numerous great comics or the CW series starring Grant Gustin, there’s no denying the pure satisfaction in seeing the character finally get a big-budget solo film. The movie is a loose adaptation of one of the Flash’s most iconic stories, Flashpoint, which was written by Geoff Johns and published in the summer of 2011. Thankfully, if you loved The Flash, there are a number of other movies out there that are likely to give you the same satisfaction. Here are nine movies to watch if you couldn’t get enough of DC’s The Flash:

Man of Steel (2013)

Warner Bros. Pictures

First of all, 2013’s Man of Steel is a must-watch if you haven’t experienced it already. Although The Flash is a surprisingly self-contained story, it is still built upon the foundations of the DCEU which began with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. On top of that, The Flash even revisits several of the key stories of Man of Steel with alternate history twists to them.

Man of Steel is the introduction of Henry Cavill’s Superman, and it’s a comic-book movie that deserves a lot more love and recognition than it actually gets. Plus, as great as Michael Shannon is as Zod in The Flash, his performance in Man of Steel makes him one of the most memorable comic-book movie villains of the modern era.

Back to the Future (1985)

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future
Universal Pictures

With the numerous time travel elements of the movie and the often light-hearted approach to its story, The Flash takes a lot of inspiration from one of the most famous time travel movies of all time, 1985’s Back to the Future. The sci-fi adventure, which starred Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, is well-deserved of its status as a classic. There’s really no beating Back to the Future.

The movie has incredible magic and charm to it that keeps people coming back to it constantly, even 40 years after its release. In many ways, Back to the Future paved the way for what a modern blockbuster could be. While the second two films in the Back to the Future trilogy might not be quite as beloved as the first, they are still certainly worth checking out.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Sony Pictures Releasing

You likely still have time to catch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in theaters, as it just opened a few weeks ago. The second film in the animated Spider-Verse trilogy has some surprising similarities to The Flash, which are only more apparent because of the two films’ proximity to each other in terms of release date. Across the Spider-Verse is a perfect example of what a middle chapter of a trilogy should be.

It thoroughly tells its own story, with complete character arcs for the likes of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, but it also significantly builds upon the events of the first film and sets up an exciting story for the third film. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse might just be one of the best Spider-Man movies ever produced, and the animation is breathtaking from start to finish. Please, do yourself a favor and catch this movie before it leaves theaters.

The Adam Project (2022)

Ryan Reynolds and Walker Scobell in The Adam Project
Netflix

2022’s The Adam Project is a movie that made a decent splash when it was released, but it has largely been forgotten about since, which is a shame. The film is a solid sci-fi adventure that follows a time-traveling pilot as he goes back in time to find his father, and he accidentally gets his younger 12-year-old self-involved in the danger. The film stars Ryan Reynolds and Walker Scobell, who is set to play Percy Jackson in the new Disney+ series, and it is directed by Shawn Levy.

Levy has received acclaim for his work on the Night at the Museum movies, as well as 2011’s Real Steel, 2021’s Free Guy and the Netflix series Stranger Things. He is also now set to direct the third Deadpool film, set for release next year. The fun-loving time travel antics of The Adam Project make the movie immensely entertaining to watch, and it tonally exists in a similar space to The Flash.

Superman (1978)

Promo image of Christopher Reeve as Superman in 1978
Warner Bros. Pictures

Going back nearly 50 years, 1978’s Superman is the movie that started it all for superhero movie blockbusters. The film, directed by Richard Donner, is a story that comes from a pure love for its lead character and the hope and optimism he brings to the world. There had really been nothing like Superman prior to its release, and the best comic-book movies are still attempting to follow in its footsteps a half-century later.

Christopher Reeve is perfect casting in the lead role, and his transitions between the shy reporter Clark Kent and the endlessly positive Kal-El are truly wonderful. Yes, there are some ways in which the film feels a bit dated, but it’s a movie that still has a lot to offer to modern audiences.

Rian Johnson’s Looper is a pretty different movie from the rest of the entries on this list. That’s because it’s a much more serious and adult story that isn’t going to leave its audience with the same kind of feel-good impression that most of these other movies will. However, Looper is still certainly worth checking out simply because it’s one of the best sci-fi time travel films of the last few decades.

The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis as the same character at different ages. The plot kicks in when the older Willis is sent back in time and comes face-to-face with his younger self, who has been hired to kill him. These days, Johnson is a director known for keeping people on the edge of their seats with clever story twists and unexpected shifts; Looper lives up to that reputation and still stands tall as one of his best films.

Batman (1989)

Michael Keaton as Batman facing Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Tim Burton's 1989 film
Warner Bros.

The reason for including 1989’s Batman on this list is pretty obvious. With Keaton’s return to the role of Bruce Wayne / Batman in The Flash, going back to watch his debut film is a must. If you’ve already seen it, then you’ll get the satisfaction of re-visiting one of the most iconic and beloved superhero movies of all time. If you’ve never seen it, then you’ll get to experience the movie for the first time.

Batman, directed by Tim Burton, is very different from many of the comic-book movies of today. It’s much more character-oriented and has lower stakes, but Burton’s visual depiction of Gotham and the outstanding performances from Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker make the watch more than worth it.

Gemini Man (2019)

Young Will Smith and old Will Smith in the Ang Lee film Gemini Man
Paramount Pictures

The 2019 movie Gemini Man may be a bit of a controversial pick for this list, as the movie isn’t the most well-regarded. While the movie certainly does have its flaws, they are not the fault of the story’s premise and the insane action sequences. The movie is directed by Ang Lee, and it stars Will Smith as a legendary assassin who is preparing to retire.

However, he’s pulled into one more mission when a younger assassin with skills to match his own begins to chase him down. The crux of the movie is that this younger assassin is actually a cloned version of Smith’s character, who is several decades younger. The movie is then, essentially veteran Will Smith versus his younger self, who Smith also plays through the use of digital de-aging.

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)

Finally, although The Flash is the first theatrically released live-action movie based on the Scarlet Speedster, it is not the first great Flash movie to exist. DC has produced many beloved animated direct-to-video films over the years, and one of the best is 2013’s Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. While The Flash is a very loose adaptation of the Flashpoint comics, the animated The Flashpoint Paradox is a direct adaptation of that story. Although the animated film does make some changes, they are almost all welcome additions that build upon the already incredible story.

Plus, the film even has a fairly impressive voice cast, which includes big names like Michael B. Jordan, Cary Elwes, Nathan Fillion, Danny Huston and Ron Perlman. Plus, Kevin Conroy returns to voice Batman and, for the Star Wars animation fans, Dee Bradley Baker and Steve Blum also play roles. If you loved the film version of The Flash, then Flashpoint is both a must-read comic and a must-watch animated film.

After nearly a decade of bouncing around

The Biden administration on Friday announced $930 million in grants designed to expand rural access to broadband internet. Part of the Department of Commerce’s “Enabling Middle Mile Broadband Infrastructure Program,” the grants will fund the deployment of more than 12,000 miles of new fiber optic cable across 35 states and Puerto Rico. The administration said Friday it expects grant recipients to invest an additional $848.46 million, a commitment that should double the program’s impact.

“Much like how the interstate highway system connected every community in America to regional and national systems of highways, this program will help us connect communities across the country to regional and national networks that provide quality, affordable high-speed internet access,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said.

According to the Commerce Department, it received over 260 applications for the Middle Mile Grant Program, totaling $7.47 billion in funding requests. The agency primarily awarded grants to telecom and utility companies, though it also set aside funding for tribal governments and nonprofits. Per Gizmodo, the largest grant, valued at $88.8 million, went to a telecommunications company in Alaska that will build a fiber optic network in a part of the state where 55 percent of residents have no internet access. On average, the Commerce Department awarded $26.6 million to most applicants. Grant recipients now have five years to complete work on their projects, though the administration hopes many of the buildouts will be completed sooner.

In addition to creating new economic opportunities in traditionally underserved communities, the government says the projects should improve safety in those areas too. “They can improve network resilience in the face of the climate crisis, and increasing natural disasters like wildfires, floods, and storms, creating multiple routes for the internet traffic to use instead of just one, like a detour on the freeway,” White House infrastructure coordinator Mitch Landrieu told Bloomberg.

The funding is just one of many recent efforts by the government to close the rural digital divide. At the start of last year, the Federal Communications Commission announced an accountability program designed to ensure recipients of the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund properly spend the money they receive from the public purse.

Being a director doesn’t mean that your favorite part of filmmaking is being behind the monitor on set.

We all have our favorite parts of filmmaking, whether it’s creating the shot list for production, working with actors on set, or watching the first cut of the film. There is a part of the filmmaking process that speaks to each of us. This sentiment holds at every level of a person’s filmmaking career.

During the 2023 Tribeca Festival, David Fincher joined Steven Soderbergh in a conversation about his favorite part of the filmmaking process. Surprisingly, shooting the film is not at the top of his list.

“Shooting for me is a lot of indigestion,” Fincher said.

This begs the question: What is Fincher’s favorite part of filmmaking, and why?

“I love rehearsal,” Fincher reveals. “I enjoy talking to people about the intention, going over every single word, and discussing the script’s meaning while listening to people read it. I love the casting process and designing the movie. Sitting with the production designer and the DP, we talk about what we want to convey, where we want people’s attention, and what we need to emphasize.”

“By the time it gets to the shooting… I don’t enjoy shooting,” the director admitted. “I find it to be a necessary evil. I would much rather workshop it and have someone else take over after all those conversations and bring it home. But you have to be there!”

Fincher’s ambivalent relationship with filming became more complicated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The director’s latest project for Netflix, The Killer, was shot with strict COVID-19 safety protocols, making Fincher’s strict and almost perfectionist-like directing process more challenging.

“Movies require you to show people how much you care and the effort you put in. They have to see it in your face and eyes,” Fincher said. “Shooting a movie last year with all the COVID protocols, working through a mask and a visor… I had no idea how much I was conveying through facial expressions and sound effects. It was a completely different experience.”

Currently, Fincher isn’t working on any new films. Instead, he has turned his attention to remastering his classic 1995 crime thriller, Se7en.

“We’re going back and remastering it in 4K from the original negative. We overscan it, oversample it, do all the necessary work. There’s a lot that needs to be fixed because high dynamic range allows us to add things we couldn’t before. Streaming media is very different from 35mm motion picture negative in terms of what it can retain. So there are a lot of blown-out windows that we have to ghost in a bit of cityscape,” Fincher explained.

Fincher emphasized that the remastering process would not involve removing any aspects of the film that may have aged poorly over the years. He stated his firm stance against changing the essence of the film and said, “I’m not gonna take all the guns out of people’s hands and replace them with flashlights.”

Variety believes Fincher is referring to Steven Spielberg’s decision to digitally remove guns from a scene in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, replacing them with walkie-talkies for the movie’s 20th-anniversary release. Spielberg admitted that it was a mistake as it altered the original intent and tone of the scene.

Censorship has been a prominent topic lately, with Disney being at the center of controversy for digitally editing shots or changing discriminatory dialogue to make films more acceptable to modern audiences.

However, older works should not be sanitized to make audiences feel comfortable. Cinema is meant to challenge audiences’ perceptions of the world and its inhabitants. Protagonists and antagonists aren’t meant to be squeaky clean. The world is complex, with both ugliness and beauty. Films should reflect this complexity and allow audiences to decide if the film resonates with them.

Fincher is a filmmaker who pushes boundaries and isn’t afraid of being dismissed. He has confidence in the work he creates and moves on to the next project with different intentions for each new story.

So, what can we learn from Fincher’s Tribeca conversation?

Stay true to your creative vision, even if it causes discomfort. If people don’t receive it well initially, it’s okay. What matters is that you and the team behind the film are content and satisfied with the project you’ve created. Tell the story that matters to you and tell it in your way.

Let us know in the comments what your favorite part of the filmmaking process is!”
