The TV Academy has a problem with Jon Stewart’s Emmys submission and has forced a change.

Apple TV+ and the creative teams behind “The Problem With Jon Stewart” had plans to compete in the outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special category, where its first season received an Emmy nomination last year. However, the Television Academy has denied its submission and moved the show to the outstanding talk series category, where it will face off against late-night hosts such as Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers.

The other eligible nominees for last year’s outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special — Netflix’s “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman,” Showtime’s “Vice” and winner “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” — will remain in the category for consideration.

Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Emmy predictions.

Letterman’s one-episode special titled “My Next Guest With David Letterman and Volodymyr Zelenskyy” is the closest comparison for why Stewart could have remained in the category. Sources share the TV Academy cited format differences between the two programs as its reason to move Stewart to talk series and allow Letterman to remain in the desired category without having to petition.

Letterman’s 44-minute in-depth conversation with the Ukrainian president includes news clips, archival interviews and footage of the host traveling to Kyiv and performing standup for the military troops and residents. Stewart’s format more so resembles a talk show setting, where he sits one-on-one with various guests to discuss current affairs.

The 12-episode sophomore season, hosted by 22-time Emmy winner Stewart, has received critical raves for the comedian and commentator’s unfiltered, no-holds-barred dialogue. Sitting with various lawmakers and political figures, he discusses many of the country’s most urgent topics such as gun control and the legislative attack against the LGBTQ community. Many clips from the series have gone viral on social media.

The TV Academy continues to try to streamline the process for networks and creative artists to understand where their visions best fit for recognition at the Primetime Emmys. However, there are still grey areas, as some shows and formats either overlap or don’t quite fit into the defined box.

In December 2022, the TV Academy announced the creation of two new categories — outstanding talk series (focusing on “unscripted interviews or panel discussions between a host/hosts and guest celebrities or personalities) and outstanding variety series (concentrating on “programs that are primarily scripted or feature loosely scripted improv and consist of discrete scenes, musical numbers, monologues, comedy stand-ups, sketches, etc.). The change addressed the rapid decline in sketch shows and different topical and news-focused talk series.

Last year, 19 shows were submitted for the now defunct variety talk series category, including HBO’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.” However, the 26-time winner was moved to scripted variety series, where it will face off against its fellow HBO counterpart “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and last year’s winner, NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

As rules currently stand, if between one and seven shows are entered for a category, “submissions will be screened by the appropriate peer group for nomination; any entry that receives nine-tenths approval will receive a nomination.” If between eight and 19 shows are entered, the number of nominees is determined by dividing the number of submissions by four.

The former variety sketch series category has yielded only two nominees in the past two years — “Black Lady Sketch Show” and “SNL.” In 2022, only eight entries were submitted, which included several now-canceled woman-fronted shows such as “Pause With Sam Jay” from HBO and “Ziwe” from Showtime, both of which will compete for recognition.

Gorillaz stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform their recent single “Possession Island,” which features Beck. Accompanied by a video of the animated Gorillaz characters, the group gave the song an emotive rendition complete with a horn section. At the end, Beck joined Damon Albarn at his piano for a final duet.

Gorillaz and Beck originally debuted “Possession Island” in September during a star-studded show at the Forum in Los Angeles. The song appears on the group’s eighth album, Cracker Island, which dropped in February via Warner Records.

The LP also features collaborations with Stevie Nicks, Bad Bunny, and Adeleye Omotayo. Gorillaz produced the album with Greg Kurstin and Remi Kabaka Jr. In a statement, animated band member Noodle Hobbs noted, “Cracker Island is the sound of change and the chorus of the collective.”

Cracker Island follows Gorillaz’s expansive 2020 project, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, which wasn’t billed as an album so much as a collection of songs Gorillaz released over the year. The group’s last proper studio LP before this one was 2018’s The Now Now.

Gorillaz performed as part of Coachella over the weekend and will appear at the festival again this weekend.

Well, this is an odd one. Not that the crime genre is uncommon, but rather that Damián Szifron, Argentinian filmmaker of the seminal 2014 film Wild Tales, helmed this. Not only that, but it’s also his first film since Wild Tales. It’s strange, for sure, but at the end of the day, To Catch a Killer is a modestly successful crime drama featuring a stellar cast. It’s not a film that will set the world on fire (or be remembered a year from now), but it’s one that satisfies the insatiable itch many of us have for movies with cops and robbers.

Eleanor (Shailene Woodley) is a young cop fresh out of the Police Academy in Baltimore. She’s a beat cop at the bottom of the totem pole of the Police Department. While responding to a call about a stubborn client at a diner, she hears the unthinkable — a sniper attack is underway downtown. Nearly thirty people are ultimately killed, and in the aftermath of the slaughter, it’s all hands on deck to find the killer. She manages to catch the eye of Federal Agent Lammark (Ben Mendelsohn) because of her ability to think outside of the box. They subsequently work together to find the killer after Lammark demands her promotion to the primary investigating team.

“…a sniper attack is underway downtown. Nearly thirty people are ultimately killed…it’s all hands on deck to find the killer.”

We’ve all seen this movie before. There’s the usual bickering between departments and local government officials, and Lammark fits the mold of the grizzly and misunderstood FBI agent seeking redemption. Even the final revelation of the killer fits relatively neatly within genre conventions. The location shooting leaves much to be desired. The setting is strikingly vanilla, and I suspect a lot of that has to do with the film being set in Baltimore but filmed in Montreal. These disparate elements contribute to a film that’s lacking in distinguishable qualities.

And yet, I still enjoyed To Catch a Killer. Not only do the action sequences pack a punch, but the performances of the two leads are also worthy of praise. Woodley is excellent as a troubled and inexperienced cop and is a natural in roles that position her as an individual in over her head. Her mature roles like this one stand out in comparison with the number of teen-orientated films she’s done in the past. Mendelsohn, as to be expected, doesn’t disappoint. He’s right at home playing an angry Federal Agent hellbent on finding the killer above all else. The two headliners anchor the film and are essential to making it gel into a relatively entertaining exercise in genre.

There’s no shortage of entertaining moments in To Catch a Killer, but that won’t stop audiences from wanting more. Other than the performances from Woodley and Mendelsohn, there’s not a lot to grab on to which would help distinguish this from countless other films of this ilk. But hey, I, for one, rarely tire of cop movies — especially ones that include sinister serial killers. I’m just not sure that I’ll remember this one in a month or two.

The untimely death of one of K-Pop’s biggest stars, Moonbin, was announced yesterday. The 25-year-old boy band member, who rose to fame with his group Astro, is believed to have taken his own life.

Sadly, the Korean pop industry is no stranger to tragedies like this – with a mental health crisis among stars leading to a string of deaths.

While scores of K-Pop stars have been victims of their mental health struggles, many others have died young through accidents and other causes.

The life of singer Lee Ji Han was claimed in the devastation of the Halloween crush in Seoul last year.

And in 2014, two members of girl group Ladies’ Code died after their tour bus came off the road, while another star called Tany died in a car crash.

But as Moonbin’s death has been labelled a suspected suicide, conversation about South Korea‘s mental health ‘epidemic’ has come back into focus.

The country has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world and 95 per cent of South Koreans report being stressed.

The high pressures of South Korean society and taboo around discussing mental health issues is not lost on the country’s stars.

After several took their own lives in 2020, artist Amber Liu was among those to lift the lid on the dark underbelly of the industry, revealing the expectation to have perfect looks, performance and discipline.

‘You’re told what to do, what to say, what to think,’ she told CBS This Morning.

‘When (people) hear you’re getting help they’re like, ‘What? Why are you getting help? That’s weird’,’ she said.

‘That stigma against mental health is just so strong.’

Tragic news emerged this week of the death of Moonbin, aged 25, in a suspected suicide.

He is believed to have been found after he did not turn up for rehearsals.

Born Moon Bin, he was part of the original lineup for Astro, debuting with five other singers in 2016.

A statement from his music label shared on Twitter early on Thursday read: ‘On April 19, Astro member Moon Bin unexpectedly left our world and became a star in the sky.’

‘Although it cannot be compared to the grief of the bereaved families who lost their beloved sons and brothers, the Astro members who have been with us for a long time, as well as our Fantagio fellow artists and executives, are deeply mourning the deceased in great sadness and shock.

‘It is even more heartbreaking to deliver the sudden news to the fans who have supported Moonbin and sent him generous love.

‘I am more heartbroken because I know the heart of the deceased who always loved and thought of his fans more than anyone else.’

They added that the funeral would be held quietly with his friends, family and colleagues attending.

Moonbin was also the older brother of K-pop girl group star Moon Sua, of Billie.

He joined the label’s trainee program at a young age and worked as an actor and model.

He made his debut with Astro, known for hits like Hide & Seek, in February 2016.

Actor and singer Lee Ji Han, 24, was one of the dozens of victims of a crush at Halloween celebrations in Seoul last October.

He had recently appeared on reality TV show Produce 101 to create a K-pop band.

He later appeared on the popular drama show Today was another Nam Hyan Day in 2019.

His agency, 935 Entertainment, paid tribute in a statement: ‘It’s true that Lee Ji Han passed away due to the accident in Itaewon on October 29.

‘We also hoped that it wasn’t true, and we were very shocked to hear the news. The family is suffering immense grief right now, so we are being very cautious. May he rest in peace.’

They later added: ‘Please send a warm farewell to [Lee], who left us too soon. We will also remember Lee, who shone beautifully with his passion for acting.’

Lead singer of South Korean boy band Shinee, Kim Jong-hyun, took his own life, it was reported in 2017.

It was suspected that he died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The star’s final message to his sister reportedly said: ‘It’s been too hard. Please send me off. Tell everyone I’ve had a hard time. This is my last goodbye.’

The 27-year-old singer, also known as Jonghyun, is said to have checked into a serviced residence for two nights and was discovered by police today after his sister raised the alarm.

He was found unconscious in an apartment in Cheongdam-dong, in the upscale Gangnam district of the capital Seoul.

Kim was part of the five-member K-Pop boyband Shinee that had become one of the country’s most popular in recent years.

They released their debut album, The Shinee World, in 2008.

K-pop star and actor Sulli was found dead at her home in Seongnam aged 25 on 14 October 2019. It is believed that she took her own life.

A member of girl group  f(x), launched by SM Entertainment in 2009, her band had achieved fame across the country and the world.

The star, born Choi Jin-ri, had received online abuse from trolls throughout her career, and announced in 2014 that she would be taking a break from her band due to ‘stress-related pain’.

She went on to focus on her acting career full-time in 2015, before launching a solo career with her first single coming out the year she died.

The trailblazing popstar caused a stir in South Korea’s traditionally conservative society for not wearing a bra and publicly displaying her romantic relationships.

She was a victim of homophobia after sharing a peck with her bandmate and best friend Goo Ha-Ra at her birthday party.

Just months before her death she took to Instagram Live to defend herself against what she called fans’ ‘gaze-rape’ – a phrase the Korea Times defined as meaning ‘excessive gazing that makes people feel violated’.

She was also an anomaly in the country’s music industry for speaking out about her struggles with panic disorders and being candid about the trolling she received online.

The online hate she received was decried by many following her death, with the fan culture surrounding her widely labelled toxic.

She was widely praised for being a positive force in exposing the abuse K-Pop stars could receive and rebelling against the strict boundaries imposed on them by the industry.

Goo Hara – suicide

Goo Hara’s death came just weeks after her close friend, fellow K-Pop star Sulli, passed away

Still reeling from the death of Sulli, K-Pop fans received the tragic news that her close friend Goo Hara had also been found dead just weeks later.

Hara, 28, was a former member of K-Pop group Kara, which debuted in 2007.

Her death, a suspected suicide, came after a previous suicide attempt six months earlier, when her manager found her unconscious at her home.

The star had been through a difficult time in the year before her death, having taken her ex-boyfriend to court after he threatened to release a sex tape of them that he had filmed without her knowledge.

This kind of vile blackmailing is called ‘molka’ in South Korea, and had seen a huge rise and another woman taking her own life around the time of Hara’s death.

Cha In-Ha – suspected suicide

Little over a week after after Hara’s death, the K-Pop world was rocked again following the death of actor Cha In-Ha.

A member of the acting troupe Suprise U, his death was a suspected suicide and drew comparisons with the earlier deaths of Sulli and Hara in both Korean and international media.

The star, whose birth name was Lee Jae Ho, had spoken positively of his fledgling career shortly before his death.

His agency Fantagio confirmed his passing, while urging people not to speculate on the cause of his death.

It released a statement saying it was ‘filled with grief at this news that is still hard to believe’.

The funeral of EunB, who was just 21, was attended by hundreds of fans and two of her bandmates Ashley and Zumy, while Rise and fifth member Sojung were being treated in hospital.

The crash came just a year after the group were formed by Polaris Entertainment as a K-pop group in 2013 and shortly after they released their first full album, Kiss Kiss.

The untimely death of one of K-Pop's

Sony has quietly raised the price of several of its biggest games on Steam in certain regions, and the new prices are nothing to scoff at.

Multiple top titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, God of War, and Returnal have been swept up in the price hike, with the new cost having different ranges in various countries. While there hasn’t been any official blog post concerning this news released by Sony, the new prices were confirmed by PlayStation LifeStyle (opens in new tab).

  • Argentina: 4199-5999 Pesos to 8499-9999 Pesos
  • Canada: $59.99-69.99 CAD to $64.99-79.99 CAD
  • Chile: 32000-39500 CLP to 35000-42000 CLP
  • China: 279-379 RMB to 345-414 RMB
  • Colombia: 159000-194000 Pesos to 184000-219000 Pesos
  • Japan: 4900-6490 Yen to 6490-7590 Yen
  • South Korea: 45880-58800 Won to 52800-62800 Won

The older titles have had less of a price hike than some of the more recent ones. However, it’s still a blow to PC fans that games as old as God of War is more expensive five years after release.

Tough luck

Unfortunately, this is just the next mishap in a long line for PC players. The Last of Us Part 1 finally became available on Steam, unfortunately leaving many users less than impressed.

Many users have been plagued with crashing games and excruciatingly long loading times for shaders, which take one to two hours every time you start the action-adventure zombie game.

I hadn’t played The Last of Us since 2013, and since I no longer have a PS4, I thought looking at the Steam remake would be a great way to refamiliarize myself with the excellent story. Sadly, I didn’t have as much fun this time around. Stuck with ridiculous wait times, I was discouraged almost immediately. I also found that not even my RTX 3070 helped matters, as I was stuck on 30fps for most of the time and plagued with constant crashing.

It’s upsetting to see such a brilliant game have such an awful port to PC, but when you look at this mishap and the price hikes, it seems like Sony doesn’t care too much about players who don’t have a PS5.

Note: The following includes spoilers from the “Abbott Elementary” Season 2 finale.

The “Abbott Elementary” Season 2 finale put a big pause on the budding relationship between Janine and Gregory, a decision the showrunners know will anger fans.

As tension between Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) heated up throughout the ABC sitcom’s sophomore installment — including the pair kissing at the annual Pennsylvania teachers’ conference — the Season 2 finale featured Gregory finally confessing his feelings to Janine during an overnight museum field trip. While Janine admitted she also has very strong feelings for Gregory, she ultimately tells him she is not ready for the serious relationship that the couple would start if they took the leap and commited to one another.

“How we always look at the relationship between those two characters, it’s less like, ‘what do we want to have happen between these two? Are they going to get together? Are they not going to get together?’ We don’t do that,” co-showrunner Justin Halpern told TheWrap. “We do like, ‘hey, what’s the arc of this individual character in a vacuum?’ And then we look at the arc of the other character, and we say, ‘would realistically these two people get together?’”

While Halpern knows some fans might be upset Janine and Gregory don’t end up together at the end of the season, he notes that the creative team wants things to be earned on the show, saying “if you’re having a dessert, we want to make sure you ate the meal first.”

“I think it stands a chance of being a polarizing episode,” co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker told TheWrap. “I think even those who aren’t totally head over heels [with] where we land will nonetheless be compelled to watch since Season 3 and see where it goes.”

Read on to hear how long the Janine and Gregory ending has been stewing, what Jacob’s role as a third wheel could look like, and Halpern and Schumacker’s take on what Janine needs to be ready to commit to Gregory.

This conversation has been edited for clarity and length.

TheWrap: How did your vision for the finale come together? Did you always know this would be the next chapter of Janine and Gregory’s relationship?

Justin Halpern: Quinta, at the start of the season, kind of talks to us about the big arcs and where she wants to land things. And she was like, “I kind of want to end in this place, but I want to make sure we earn it.” We went through the season, and then as we got to Episodes 14, 15 [and] 16, it started to really come into focus how we were going to end it and why it had to end in that way, simply by looking at what the characters had gone through in the second season and the choices they had made. It just seemed like Janine is in a place where she realizes she’s not quite ready for what would be a very, very serious relationship.

After Janine sees Maurice and he tells her she’s in her selfish era, we see her get pretty emotionally down. Why did this interaction hit her so hard, and how does it pile onto some recent difficulties Janine is going through, from being told she’s a bad teacher to dealing with her mom?

Justin Halpern: We talk a lot in the room about being a good person — what does that even mean? — and how you view yourself and what you say about yourself and then your actions, and do those two things align.

For Janine, she works in this underfunded public school; she gives absolutely everything she can; she’s a kind person; she’s there for her friends when they need her. I think that hearing from Maurice that she was being selfish — something Janine would never, ever want to be described as — when she’s confronted with the very clear facts that she has been acting selfishly in this one facet of her life, I think that it scares her. It makes her realize, “Wow, I wasn’t even thinking about my behavior in this area of my life,” which is romantically, and then to be confronted by Gregory, who she knows and who’s someone she deeply cares about and has really strong feelings for, I think that she knows if [she’s] able to kind of do the selfish things without even really realizing it, then [she] stands a real chance of f—g up this relationship with Gregory, if [she] were to jump in right now.

[She’s] not yet ready to be in that relationship, and it’s a bummer because it means that he might go and find another relationship, and maybe [she] lost [her] chance. But [she] knows that if [she] jumps into it right now, there’s a good chance [she’d] f—k it up, and then we don’t even have a relationship going forward. I think that Maurice conversation is really sort of the inciting incident — It’s not like he tells her something about herself she doesn’t know, but it’s the inciting incident to her waking up to this idea that maybe she’s not as far along as she thought.

Patrick Schumacker: There is this causality with pitstops in between — the mother episode is another necessary stop in this evolution to reach that decision that she’s gonna put up this boundary.

From Gregory’s side of things, why does he finally choose to be honest about her feelings?

Justin Halpern: For Gregory, if you look at what he’s been through during the season, he’s figured out what he wants to do with his life, which is teach. He’s stood up to his father, something he’s never been able to do his entire life — he not only stood up to his father but gained his father’s respect in doing so — he’s starting to feel comfortable in his own skin.

I think at the core of Janine and Gregory, you have to remember they’re in their mid 20s, so they’re discovering a lot of things about themselves. I think he is realizing, “Hey, I’m actually coming to some conclusions about myself, learning things about myself and accomplishing some things in my life emotionally, that I feel really good about.” In this moment, he’s ready to take that leap that he would not have been able to do earlier, and it’s because of the things he’s accomplished throughout the course of that season — He’s sort of in a different place.

Jacob’s reaction when he finds out Janine and Gregory kissed is stellar. What’s Jacob’s role as Jeanine and Gregory figure out their feelings?

Patrick Schumacker: Jacob wants desperately to be the ideal wingman to Gregory, but also to Janine.

Justin Halpern: It lends itself to, at some point, an inevitable realization that he is the third wheel, which he will have to face. I wonder if that will be harder to take than him realizing that he’s corny.

What will make Janine ready?

Justin Halpern: That’s kind of one of the fun things to explore — her blind spots in her development. Really and truly, I think that she needs to find a little bit of inner confidence, in terms of what she offers to the world; and also when to say no when someone’s asking her for something that isn’t fair. … We see she’s such a selfless character, it’s sort of a thing like, I need to spend a little time on myself, and then that person swings the pendulum all the way over to the other extreme … I think she’s trying to calibrate that right, like what do I want? How do I weigh that versus how being helpful to others and in a relationship with someone else? I think that once she sort of finds that all within herself I think that she’ll be in a better position to have a serious romantic relationship.

Paramount+ revealed Thursday that it will be expanding its global Korean originals slate with the launch of two new series exclusively on the service in multiple regions around the world. Forthcoming K-dramas A Bloody Lucky Day and Queen Woo will be available on Paramount+ in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The two series are the latest projects developed by Paramount+ and Korean streamer TVING, as part of Paramount’s global partnership with Korean entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM.

The announcement comes amid some early success for Paramount+’s Korean originals, with Bargain, an upcoming K-drama from the company, winning the best screenplay prize at last night’s Canneseries Awards Ceremony in France. The service also revealed that recently launched Korean drama series Yonder has become its most-watched international series in the U.S. so far this year. Yonder, which stars  Shin Ha-kyun and Han Ji-min, premiered globally on the service on April 11, while Bargain will go live on Paramount+ this summer.

A Bloody Lucky Day is a thriller action series about an ordinary taxi driver Taek, who gets entangled with a customer that turns out to be a serial killer. The series is directed by Pil Gam-Sung (Hostage: Missing Celebrity) and written by Kim Min-sung and Song Hanna. It is produced by CJ ENM’s production house Studio Dragon, The Great Show and Studio N, and stars Lee Sung-min (Reborn Rich) as Oh Taek, the taxi driver; Yoo Yeon-seok (Hospital Playlist) as Geum Hyuk-soo, the psychopathic killer; and Lee Jung-eun (Parasite, Yonder) as Hwang Soon-gyu, the relentless chaser.

Queen Woo is a period drama series directed by Jung Se-kyo (Oh! My Gran) and written by Lee Byoung-hak (The Royal Tailor). It follows the story of Queen Woo Hee, the first woman in history to become queen twice, as she embarks on a journey to inherit the throne amidst a fierce battle between all the tribes owned by the late King’s brothers. TVING recently announced that Jun Jong-seo (Bargain) will play Queen Woo, with additional cast members to be revealed at a later date.

“We are incredibly proud of our Korean content that is finally taking the global stage, engaging viewers and fans on Paramount+ and beyond,” said Catherine Park, senior vp and head of streaming and regional lead for Asia at Paramount. “The addition of A Bloody Lucky Day and Queen Woo strengthens our global content offering, and we look forward to bringing more original Korean content to our viewers worldwide.”

Nysa Devgn turned 20 today.

Kajol and Ajay Devgn’s daughter Nysa is celebrating her 20th birthday today.

Kajol and Ajay Devgn’s daughter Nysa is turning a year older today. The young starlet enjoys a massive fan following. As she celebrates her 20th birthday, she received heartfelt birthday wishes from her parents.

Kajol took to her Instagram handle and shared a photo of herself with her daughter and penned a heartwarming note which read, “This is us and our story always. Love your sense of humour and ur mind and your oh so very sweet heart.. love you to bits baby girl and may you always smile laugh and snark with me forever!

#daughtersrock #mybabygirl #happy20th #allgrownupnow (red heart emoji)”. In the photo, the duo dished out major mother-daughter goals and they candidly looked at each other and smiled.

Ajay Devgn took a trip down the memory lane and shared a photo collage with Nysa. He captioned the post, “#FatherofMyPride Happy birthday baby.”

Earlier in the day, Kajol also shared a bundle of stories on her Instagram stories dedicating to her daughter. The first story read, “sometimes when I need a miracle, I look into my daughter’s eyes and realise, I’ve already created one”. The next story followed, “She is sunshine mixed with a little hurricane”.

The last story read, “Raise the daughter, people are a little scared of. Teach her to be fierce, independent and not give a crap about what people think. Raise her to be a little firecracker who is going to change the world and make a difference.”

Earlier in an interview with Hindustan Times, Kajol opened up about her daughter’s popularity and shared that she is proud of the way Nysa carries herself. “I feel proud of her, of course. I love the fact that she conducts herself with dignity wherever she goes. All I can say is, she is 19 and is having fun. She has the right to do whatever she wants to do and I will always support her.”

Speaking about her daughter’s freedom of choice, Kajol shared that she herself has abided by those norms when it came to standing out in the film industry. “I never worried about being a part of a group or following the trend or being at the number one spot in the rat race. I never thought about all that.”

Meanwhile, on the work front, Kajol was last seen in Salaam Venky with Vishal Jethwa. Helmed by actor-director Revathy, the movie is inspired by the true story of the young chess player Kolavennu Venkatesh, who had Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). He died in 2004. The film couldn’t bring in great box office numbers but was a critical success due to it’s conventional storyline.

Ajay Devgn on the other hand was last seen in Bholaa with Tabu.

Nysa Devgn turned 20 today.Kajol and Ajay

After years of waiting, this June audiences will be reintroduced to the world of Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Verse.

The upcoming Spidey-centric sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is set to jump back into the wall-crawling fun, focusing on the epic journey of Miles Morales as he discovers what it means to be Spider-Man.

The film has been described as a Multiversal “love story” with a colorful cast of characters both new and old.

So, here is every actor confirmed to appear in the upcoming sequel.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Full Cast

Shameik Moore – Miles Morales

Sony Pictures

Headlining the Spider-Verse sequel is Shameik Moore as Miles Morales. After his character discovered his Spidey abilities in the first film, Across the Spider-Verse will see the character grapple with what it means to be Spider-Man.

This version of Miles has grown up a tad since the last film, dealing with his first love, nosy parents, and wanting to belong (typical teenager stuff). Not much is yet known about this young hero’s journey within the upcoming blockbuster, but it has been teased that he will be getting a couple of upgrades along the way.

Hailee Steinfeld – Gwen Stacey

2haileesteinfeld
Sony Pictures

Coming off her live-action superhero debut in Disney+’s Hawkeye, Hailee Steinfeld is set to reprise her role as Gwen Stacey/Spider-Gwen in Spider-Verse 2. This time around, Steinfeld’s webhead will be entangled in a love triangle, between her, Miles, and the newly-introduced Hobart “Hobie” Brown/Spider-Punk.

While fans got a taste of Gwen’s world in the first Spider-Verse film, the sequel will seemingly dive even deeper into the character. Her father, George Stacey, is set to have a part to play in the film, with the adventure even taking fans to her version of New York somewhere across the Multiverse.

Oscar Isaac – Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099

3oscarisaac
Sony Pictures

After only appearing in Into the Spider-Verse‘s post-credits scene, Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 will have a major part to play in the upcoming sequel. This wall-crawling hero “doesn’t have a sense of humor” and is “very serious” according to Isaac, something that has been seen in the film’s trailers.

Leading a group of Multiversal Spider-Man Varients known as the Spider-People, Spider-Man 2099 looks to be somewhat of an antagonist towards Miles in Across the Spider-Verse. The self-described “best Spider-Man in the Multiverse,” serves as a gatekeeper to the Spidey team, something that Miles wants so desperately to be a part of.

Jake Johnson – Peter B. Parker

4jakejohnson
Sony Pictures

Another returning actor to the world of Spider-Verse is Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker. Johnson’s webhead was the Jedi master to Miles Morales’ padawan in the first film, as he was transported across the Multiverse essentially to the feet of Shameik Moore’s young hero.

Despite over 240 characters set to appear in Across the Spider-Verse, Peter B. Parker will still get his time to shine. The elder statesman was recently revealed to be a father in the upcoming sequel, with a web-slinging baby named Mayday Parker in his stead.

Daniel Kaluuya – Hobart “Hobie” Brown/Spider-Punk

5danielkaluuya
Sony Pictures

One of the exciting new Spider-Man Varients at the heart of Across the Spider-Verse‘s story is Hobart “Hobie” Brown/Spider-Punk, played by Black Panther alum Daniel Kaluuya.

This punk-rock version of Marvel’s classic wall-crawler has been an opportunity for Kaluuya to get back to his roots, as the character “sounds exactly like [him],” being from Camden. Hobie Brown will be one of the corners of the love triangle at the center of the film, seemingly taking a liking to Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacey.

Issa Rae – Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman

6issarae
Sony Pictures

Insecure star Issa Rae will make her Marvel debut in Spider-Verse 2, playing Jessica Drew (aka Spider-Woman). Her hero will be pregnant during Across the Spider-Verse, but she has been seen getting in on the action alongside a handful of other Spider-People nonetheless

Rae’s Spider-Woman uses her Spidey abilities alongside a bright red motorcycle, creating a unique fighting style all to her own.

Karan Soni – Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man India

7karansoni
Sony Pictures

Before reprising his fan-favorite taxi driver role in 2024’s Deadpool 3, Karan Soni will get to suit up as Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man India. This alternate take on Peter Parker is seemingly one of the main characters of the upcoming film, alongside the likes of Miles Morales, Gwen Stacey, and Hobie Brown.

Spider-Man India’s universe looks to be one of the many alternate realities Across the Spider-Verse will explore, with the team headed to Mumbattan, which has been described as “Manhattan but in reverse.” Of the various art styles shown off so far in the film, Spider-Man India and his world look to be one of the most striking.

Jason Schwartzman – Jonathan Ohnn/The Spot

8jasonschwartzman
Sony Pictures

Playing Across the Spider-Verse‘s main villain The Spot is Jason Schwartzman. Schwartzman’s Multiversal big bad is “covered in interdimensional portals,” creating this eye-catching watercolor bleed effect that director Joaquim Dos Santos called “artistry come to life.”

And this will not be a one-and-done deal for Schwartzman in the franchise, as the Spot is already confirmed to also be the villain in next year’s Beyond the Spider-Verse as well.

Brian Tyree Henry – Jefferson Davis

9briantyreehenry
Sony Pictures

Brian Tyree Henry will return in Across the Spider-Verse, lending his voice to Miles’ police officer father Jefferson Davis. After Davis lost his brother in the first film, it will be fascinating to see if he becomes even more protective of his son in the sequel.

Since the 2018 original film, Henry made his live-action superhero debut, playing Phastos in Marvel Studios’ Eternals.

Luna Lauren Vélez – Rio Morales

10lunalaurenvelez
Sony Pictures

Playing opposite Brian Tyree Henry’s Jefferson Davis is Luna Lauren Vélez as Rio Morales. Being the mother of Miles, Rio will have to deal with “[her] little man not being [her] little boy” anymore, as the teenage hero starts to grow up.

Just like the first film, Rio and Jefferson will be the emotional backbone of this Spider-Verse story, serving as the thing Miles always comes back to when wondering why he became a hero in the first place.

Greta Lee – Lyla

11gretalee
Sony Pictures

Greta Lee will take on the role of Lyla in Across the Spider-Verse.

While fans may not recognize the name at first glance, Lyla is the AI assistant of Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara who was heard in the Into the Spider-Verse post-credit scene.

Jorma Taccone – Vulture

12jormataccone
Sony Pictures

The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone will get in on the Spider-Verse fun in the upcoming sequel, playing the longtime Spidey villain, Adrian Toomes/Vulture.

Taccone’s take on the character will come with a whole new look, sporting more actual bird feathers than his recent live-action counterpart played by Michael Keaton.

Shea Whigham – George Stacy

13sheawhigham
Sony Pictures

Revealed alongside the casting of Jorma Taccone was Shea Whigham as George Stacey.

The father of Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen will play as an antagonistic force in her “beautiful…watercolor,” with a recent clip showing Gwen going up against her father at the Guggenheim Museum.

Rachel Dratch – Principal

14racheldratch
Sony Pictures

Getting what seems to be a small part in Across the Spider-Verse is Rachel Dratch as Miles Morales’ high school principal.

The former Saturday Night Live cast member can be first seen in one of the recent trailers for the film, telling Luna Lauren Vélez’s Rio, “Your son is lying to you. And I think you know it.”

Michael Rianda – Spider-Man Patient

15mikerianda
Sony Pictures

In a bit of a fun cameo, Michael Rianda will play the Spider-Man patient shown seeing a therapist at the end of the film’s second official trailer.

Rianda is known for his work as the director and co-writer on 2019’s animated epic The Mitchells vs the Machines, and, according to a tweet from the filmmaker, was brought in for temporary “scratch” voice work, that has not (and likely will not) be replaced.

Director Zack Snyder took to social media to post an image of Henry Cavill’s Superman that haven’t been seen before.

Snyder has been hyping up his “Full Circle“ event, intended to commemorate his three DC movies: Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Between Friday, April 28 through Sunday, April 30, Snyder himself will play host to screenings of the three films with a Q&A session after each. The proceeds from these screenings will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Cavill’s Superman was a key player in Snyder’s trilogy and his performance earned him legions of fans eager to see more of him.

Zack Snyder Posts New Superman Portrait

Through Vero, Zack Snyder uploaded an impressive-looking photo of Henry Cavill’s Superman. In the image, the Man of Steel stands tall, and fans can see all the intricate detailing on his suit:

Additionally, Snyder has been posting other character portraits from his DC movies. Superman’s secret identity, the mild-mannered Clark Kent, was also on display:

Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor was also shown looking none too pleased in a prison uniform from the end of Dawn of Justice:

And finally, Kryptonian sub-commander Faora Ul, who served under General Zod, was featured. Actress Antje Traue will reportedly reprise her role in The Flash:

How Snyder’s Impact on DC Lives On

With DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran taking the reigns of characters like Superman for movies and TV shows, it’s safe to say that Zack Snyder’s time making superhero movies is done for now.

And that’s okay, as the fan-favorite director is currently developing a Star Wars-esque franchise for Netflix called Rebel Moon.

Die-hards would probably tell you that Snyder will make a triumphant return to DC and finish his Justice League saga. But as nice as it would be to see his vision completed, that’s not going to happen. The best audiences can hope for at this point is a potential comic book continuation, but this is also something that is not currently in the works.

Still, the Snyder DC trilogy is a pretty solid work in and of itself, offering a gritty but compelling take on beloved characters. These movies may not have gotten everything right, but they’re still quite enjoyable for what they are.

As part of a recent Pentagon briefing into UFOs, now officially known as UAPs or Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, the US Government has declassified two new videos of such phenomena. One, captured by a Reaper drone, shows a flying metallic orb that was spotted in the Middle East last year.

The videos were presented by Sean Kirkpatrick, head of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office that was established last year to investigate evidence of UAPs. Sightings are up, with the office now tracking over 650 cases, and tension around UAPs are high after multiple unidentified objects were shot down over the US and Canada earlier this year.

Despite the increase in activity, Kirkpatrick says his office has so far found no evidence of extraterrestrial activity. As reported by Politico, he told the Senate Armed Services Committee that “AARO has found no credible evidence thus far of extraterrestrial activity, off-world technology or objects that defy the known laws of physics.”

“Only a very small percentage of UAP reports display signatures that could reasonably be described as anomalous,” he explained. “The majority of unidentified objects reported to AARO demonstrated mundane characteristics of balloons, clutter, natural phenomena or other readily explainable sources.”

A second declassified video shown in the presentation analyses an object spotted in South Asia. This sighting has been resolved pending peer review, with AARO determining that the object was a commercial aircraft. Kirkpatrick said that around half the UAP reports presented to his office have been prioritised for review, with 20-30 currently undergoing analysis, and just a handful having been peer-reviewed and closed. He warns that many cases will likely go unresolved due to a lack of evidence

The first metallic sphere video may be one of those, with Kirkpatrick saying “it is going to be impossible to fully identify that, just based off of that video.” A note on the slide displayed with the video adds that the UAP displays “characteristics consistent with other ‘metallic orb’ observations in the area.”

100 years of studio equipment technology has led to the MT 48 audio interface.

As usual, the biggest news out of NAB this year has to do with cameras and the latest tech trends. However, while AI art generators and text-based automated editing might get the first wave of headlines, there are still plenty of hidden gems to find at the conference.

In particular, NAB has plenty of great innovations and new pieces of gear in the world of audio recording and sound design for video which are equally as important as any camera or NLE announcement.

With that in mind let’s take a look at one of the biggest stories coming out of NAB this year with Neumann’s introduction of the MT 48 — the manufacturer’s first audio interface in its nearly 100-year history.

Neumann MT 48Credit: Neumann

A Bit of Background on Neumann

Georg Neumann GmbH, known as “Neumann.Berlin”, is one of the world’s oldest (and leading) manufacturers of studio-grade audio equipment and the creator of some of the best recording microphones in existence. Founded all the way back in 1928, these guys have been behind the scenes for all types of audio recording innovations and releases for decades.

As a part of the Sennheiser Group since 1991, Neumann has pushed further into international markets with their legacy technology adding depth and quality to the audio for video and film world.

Starting around 2010, the legendary manufacturer has been looking to expand its electro-acoustic transducer design expertise from the studio and more into television, film, and radio broadcasting. This leads us to this announcement at NAB of their MT 48 audio interface.

Neumann MT 48Credit: Neumann

The Neumann MT 48 Audio Interface

As the first product from Neumann with Merging Technologies inside, the MT 48 audio interface is an update of the popular Merging Anubis audio interface, but updated for additional USB and ADAT connectivity and an overall new user interface optimized for ease of use in studio and home studio setups.

“As a legendary microphone manufacturer, Neumann has always been synonymous with excellence in recording technology,” Neumann CEO Ralf Oehl said about the product. “Over the past decade, we have shown that Neumann can bring the same uncompromising quality to loudspeakers and headphones. The MT 48 completes the ideal signal chain: Finally, you can have Neumann quality throughout, from the sound source to your ear.”

With a dynamic range of 136 dB and mic preamps that go up to 78 dB gain, this new MT 48 should help to set a new benchmark for audio quality for all types of projects and productions. It also has four analog inputs and eight analog output channels (four stereos) and is expandable through ADAT and AES67 as well.

Neumann MT 48Credit: Neumann

Pricing and Availability

For any sound designers or audio recording artists, the MT 48 should be a great option for any sort of studio setup with its two extremely powerful headphone amplifiers with ultra-low output impedance. There are also some nifty onboard DSP effects as well including sophisticated EQ, complex dynamic processing, and reverb.

There’s also a cool intuitive touchscreen interface that allows users to change mixer levels, pan positions, and other parameters with ease. Plus for anyone looking to operate the MT 48 from their computers or tablets, a Remote Control App and a browser-based Web Control feature are both available as well.

Key features include:

  • Class-leading AD/DA converters with enormous dynamic range

  • Intuitive touchscreen user interface

  • DSP processing (EQ, dynamics, reverb)

  • 4 independent mixers with integrated talkback

  • USB, MIDI, ADAT, and AES67 connectivity

The Neumann MT 48 audio interface should hit stores worldwide in the next few weeks and will retail for $1,850 USD. If you’d like to find out more you can check out the product page here.

South Park
Image: Comedy Central

Tonight—two months after getting smacked with a $200 million lawsuit from its rivals over at Warner Bros. Discovery—South Park co-owners Paramount have finally gotten around to launching a counterclaim at its fellow media mega-giant. For a piddling sum, too: Just $52 million! It’s like they barely even care.

As we noted at the time, the original South Park lawsuit was launched because Warner Bros. thinks it got screwed over on the extremely expensive deal it made with Paramount back in 2019 to turn HBO Max into the streaming home for South Park—something it agreed to pay roughly $500 million for over several years, including the rights to stream what were then the next three seasons of the Comedy Central series. The company was thus legally livid when a) Paramount commissioned some South Park streaming content of its own under the assertion that they were “events”—described in more recent legal docs as “made-for-streaming movies”—rather than “specials” or “episodes,” and b) delivered three seasons of the show that were significantly shorter than what HBO Max was expecting. (Seasons 25 and 26 were both just six episode, after previous runs all ran to 10 episodes per season; Season 24 was even shorter, after Paramount retroactively took the two 48-minute specials it aired on Comedy Central in 2020 and 2021 and called them “Season 24.”)

Paramount’s counterclaim, filed earlier tonight, seems to be a lot more straightforward, and can (WE ARE NOT LAWYERS) be summed up in part as “Gosh, guess you should have bothered to specify how long a ‘season’ was. Now pay us!” Because, according to Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery has stopped sending those juicy ~$26 million payments it’s supposed to be sending over to pay for the fact that it’s still, well, hosting a whole bunch of episodes of South Park on its streaming service. (Check the legal cattiness, from the counterclaim: “Even assuming WarnerMedia is correct that the Term Sheet contains a 10-episode minimum for Seasons 24 to 26 (it is not), the total “missing” content amounts to 14 out of 332 total episodes, or a mere 4-percent of the total licensed content. WarnerMedia, under its own theory of a breach by South Park Studios, has no valid excuse for refusing to pay the license fees that are contractually owed for the 96-percent of the content it admits it has received and continues to exploit.”)

In other words: This fight remains delightfully grandstand-y and high-horse-ish, even as South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone (who, as co-owners of South Park Digital Studios, have been roped in as defendants in the Warner Bros. case) appear to be trying to keep their heads down on the whole thing.

“Peter Pan Goes Wrong” has two big advantages over its older sister production, “The Play That Goes Wrong.” First, it’s based on J. M. Barrie’s “Peter and Wendy,” and whenever this new show fails to be amusing in its extremely physical parody of a disastrous amateur production of that classic children’s play, there’s always the magic of flying children, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and a skate-boarding alligator to distract us while the actors repeat jokes for the second or third time with increasingly less positive results. There’s only so many times you can laugh at an actor purposefully giving a bad performance.

Second, and even more important, “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” is something of a snuff play. As far as body counts go on the Broadway stage, among new plays, only Martin McDonagh’s “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” clocked in more real-time “deaths,” although two of those were cats. No animal is “killed” in “Peter Pan Goes Wrong,” but one actor in a dog costume (coauthor Henry Lewis) does get stuck in a doorway and has his head bashed in repeatedly.

After various engagements on the West End and elsewhere in the U.K., “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” opened Wednesday at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The authors are Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, who also wrote that previous “Goes Wrong” play, which continues to perform Off Broadway after a long run on Broadway.

But back to the show that would be better titled “Peter Pan Got Snuffed.” Snuff films were a big deal back in the 1970s, although it was never proven if any of those adult films actually offered up the grisly real thing. The “deaths” certainly look real in “Peter Pan Goes Wrong,” and they invariably provoke more gasps than laughs when the actors are crushed, electrocuted or dropped while performing aerial tricks gone awry. Some of these “deaths” might be more accurately described as “near deaths,” and after you’ve witnessed a few of them, it is more the sound of the accident than the sight of it that stuns you out of boredom. Ella Wahlstrom’s sound design repeatedly packs a wallop.

Many of the actors here are veterans of “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” in the U.K. and/or various productions of “The Play That Goes Wrong.” In other words, they have experience at dodging doors and flying planks without really getting injured. The newcomer is guest star Neil Patrick Harris, who performs in the show through the end of April. In the beginning of “Peter Pan Goes Wrong,” Harris plays the role of the narrator, and holding the script, he fulfills the gimmick of all guest stars: to goose ticket sales with as little work as possible.

Always a real trouper, Harris goes further, much further. Yes, he repeats that embarrassing half-naked “Birdman” send-up from his hosting of the Academy Awards in 2015. Much more significant, he is very much a part of this show’s hurricane finale on a turn table while the actors performing “Peter and Wendy” stampede through a revolving number of tacky sets — by Simon Scullion — that force them repeatedly to run across a pirate’s ship, an enchanted forest and the children’s bedroom back in London. As if that weren’t enough, Harris is then hit by an errant chair that sends him flying back onto the turn table. He remains “passed out” there until the curtain call when he stands up and shakes his head before the entire ensemble takes its bow. The way he shakes his head might be part of the gag, but it looks pretty real.

Beyond Harris’ very physical performance and all the staged deaths, the high point of “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” is extremely low tech and of even lower humor. It comes when the Captain Hook (co-author Henry Shields does a very good imitation of John Cleese) has problems removing the cork from a bottle. The moment goes on forever and ends sooner than it should.

Adam Meggido directs the mayhem.

Hot Docs and Netflix have revealed the five Canadian documentary projects that will share CAD 175,000 ($130,000) as part of the Hot Docs Incubator program, the latest instalment of the Canadian Storytellers Project. These five projects will each receive CAD 35,000 ($26,000).

The program, designed to ignite developing doc projects that show creative and market potential, will also engage filmmakers in a series of intensive workshops focused on story, market preparedness, and career or company building.

Work-in-progress scenes of the projects will screen to international decision-makers and Industry delegates at next year’s edition of the Hot Docs film festival.

Heidi Tao Yang, Hot Docs’ director of funds and labs, said: “What makes this new program special is that it expands the scope of support to an underserved group of filmmakers who are mid-career, and the level of these intensive sessions will reflect on the building blocks they have already established. These dynamic, authentic, and distinctly Canadian projects will change and evolve over the next eight months, and I look forward to seeing the work-in-progress teasers at Hot Docs Festival 2024.”

“Each one of these filmmakers reflect the exceptional talent pool of creatives we have in Canada, and we are incredibly inspired by the next generation of documentarians,” Stéphane Cardin, director, public policy for Netflix Canada, said.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to increased representation across the industry, The Hot Docs Incubator will provide vital support to these filmmakers to bring their powerful and unique stories to the screen.”

Eligible projects were considered by the Hot Docs Incubator Selection Committee, which included Linda Fong (independent production officer, TVO), Selin Murat (markets manager, IDFA), and Heidi Tao Yang (director, funds and labs, Hot Docs).

Another way a ‘nature economy’ is finding a foothold is through talent acquisition. Scott Sinclair, whose company, SES Consulting, retrofits buildings to move them off fossil fuels, says having a nature-first mindset baked into the business model attracts innovative young minds who grew up with the environment front and centre – as well as clients.

“It’s just, I think, an incredible business opportunity,” he says.

Why protecting the planet and making a profit are no longer at odds

For some environmentalists as well, this work is about combining environmental action, long associated with protesters blocking roads and affixing themselves onto trees, with the idea of promoting business.

Though still niche, it’s starting to happen.

‘Valuing’ Nature

To understand the economic value of their natural assets, some communities are putting a price on them.

The District of West Vancouver is one of the first in Canada to do so.

There are some rare strands of urban, old growth trees left standing in the city’s Lighthouse Park. In a walk through the park, District officials Matthew MacKinnon and Heather Keith explained the uniqueness of the old growth forest. They told Global News how these ancient trees, some over 500 years old, maintain an extremely biodiverse ecosystem in the park, while offering people a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

“There are trees here that have lived longer than any person that’s alive right now,” says Heather Keith, the senior manager of climate action and environment for the District.

The municipality has determined the idea has value in dollar figures. It’s one of the first places in Canada to take this approach, estimating its natural assets – forests, waterways, parks – to be in the ballpark of $3.2 billion, with forests providing up to $1.8 billion in ‘services.’

They’ve estimated that to be the cost of ‘replacing’ those assets, which provide immeasurable ecological and health benefits to the community, Keith says.

An infographic showing West Vancouver’s dollar valuations of its natural assets.

Many Indigenous communities are also charting a clear path forward toward that new nature economy.

One model that’s proven successful is called Coast Funds. It’s an investment strategy created by coastal First Nations to pool money to help local communities shift from extraction – logging old growth trees, for example – and toward protection. This means keeping those vital resources intact and leveraging them to make them profitable – ecotourism, carbon credits or guardianship programs.

“We understood that 500-year-old trees don’t just grow up overnight,” says Dallas Smith, the president of Nanwakolas Council, a group of six First Nations that’s part of the Coast Funds initiative.

The broader financial and business communities have realized that the costs of environmental inaction are far greater – and are starting to move toward a sustainable direction, too.

Adam Scott is an analyst whose group, Shift Action for Pension Wealth and Planet Health, monitors how credible Canadian pension funds are when it comes to climate action. In January, Shift released a report arguing there’s a long way to go. But at least there is a recognition that things need to change.

“The smart players in the financial industry have understood that […] the financial performance of their institutions is based on having a climate strategy,” he said.

Unfortunately, the moves are largely voluntary and without teeth, says Tom Rand, a managing partner with ArcTern Ventures. In other words, he insists, there’s a long way to go before a nature economy becomes the norm.

“If you’re asking if the broad swath of economic actors are understanding that we can make money preserving nature, absolutely not.”

But big trees are offering an inspiration for change. People name them. They trek through the forest to see them, and in the case of photographer TJ Watt, to document them before they’re gone.

A man stands at the base of a huge tree.

“These are some of the most enchanting and beautiful ecosystems on all of Planet Earth,” says Watt, who represents the Ancient Forest Alliance.

“They’re really some of our oldest friends.”

Tracking giants

When author and book editor Amanda Lewis set out to write a book about big trees, she thought she’d focus on the dwindling, majestic resources nestled in the coastal forests of B.C.

But, solo expedition after solo expedition hiking through various groves in search of the biggest of the big led her to another, more optimistic conclusion – “I wanted to focus on what we have left” and not so much on “what we’ve lost.”

The pandemic was a catalyst for Lewis – and, it seems, for many other Canadians too.

EXCLUSIVE: Patriot Pictures and XYZ Films have brought on Wayward Entertainment to release Nick Cassavetes action-thriller God Is A Bullet.

Maika Monroe, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Karl Glusman, January Jones, Paul Johansson, David Thornton and Jamie Foxx star in the movie, which producers say will have a wide domestic theatrical release on June 23, 2023, followed by a digital roll out from July 11, 2023.

The film follows detective Bob Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who finds his ex-wife murdered and his daughter kidnapped by an insidious cult. Hightower takes matters into his own hands and infiltrates the secretive cult to try to save his daughter. With the help of the cult’s only female victim escapee, Case Hardin (Maika Monroe), Hightower and Hardin go down the rabbit hole with The Ferryman (Jamie Foxx) to save his daughter and find closure for Hardin from the cult – and its maniacal leader (Glusman).

Inspired by true events and based on the novel of the same name written by Boston Teran, the film is produced by Michael Mendelsohn from Patriot Pictures and Donald V. Allen. Kim H. Winther and Jim Steele are co-producing.

Executive producing is Natalie Perrotta, Paul Johansson, Sidney Kimmel, Jamie Foxx, Chuck Pacheco, Jim Steele, Santiago García Galván. Mendelsohn’s Union Patriot Capital Management fully financed the film.

XYZ Films is handling world sales. XYZ and Patriot previously collaborated on Synchronic (TIFF 2019) with Jamie Dornan and Anthony Mackie, Cut Throat City (SXSW 2020), starring Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes, and the Sundance title (2021) Prisoners Of The Ghostland, starring Nicolas Cage.

Former Revolution Studios CEO Vince Totino and former Orion Pictures President John Hegeman launched Wayward Entertainment last year with a focus on producing and distributing genre content. They are also producing horror feature Svalta with Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and XYZ. God Is A Bullet marks their first theatrical release.

Patriot Pictures Michael Mendelson stated: “We are looking forward to working with Wayward and are so excited that God Is A Bullet will be hitting theaters nationwide this summer. Audiences are back and want to see films that keep them on the edge. Nick and I, with an amazing, multi-national cast and crew, are excited to release a badass, action-packed revenge classic, made to be enjoyed on the big screen.”

John Q and The Notebook filmmaker Cassavetes added: “I’ve been trying to tell this great story for the last 18+ years. It’s tough, violent, has two flawed and fantastic characters, and absolutely pulls no punches. I love it! There’s nothing else out there like it, not even close!”

SPOILER ALERT: The following story reveals major plot points from tonight’s series finale of FX’s Snowfall.

After 6 seasons, FX’s hit drama series Snowfall said its final goodbye tonight, and while most of what transpired was somewhat expected, seeing a promising life end in poverty and despair is absolutely heartbreaking.

Viewers have been on a journey with Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), seeing his highs and lows and cheering him on no matter what he’s gotten himself into. But money and power tend to change people, especially when said fortune comes from criminal activities. In the end, Franklin is left with no family and friends to speak of—except his day one Leon Simmons (Isaiah John)—a shadow of himself resembling his father Alton Williams (Kevin Carroll) at his lowest in Season 1, drunk and destitute.

“His final moments were incredibly challenging. There was a fatherhood connection there, which I connected to personally so it was deeply emotional for me. Franklin’s connection to his father and his becoming an alcoholic was incredibly difficult,” Idris told Deadline. “Behind the scenes, I had a little flask with me that no one knew about. I would touch it with my lips just to have the taste. I’ll also admit that I didn’t shower. Luckily I wasn’t disrupting anyone with any odors,” he said with a laugh.

Thanks to Cissy (Michael Hyatt), who is locked up in prison for murdering Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson) in episode 9, Leon makes it out alive just in time. With his wife Wanda (Gail Bean) by his side, they leave for Ghana in search of a new life until the crack epidemic is under control. When Leon returns, he seeks out his friend Franklin, who is hiding out inside the family home which is now dilapidated, and bears an eviction note on the door.

Leon is stunned at who Franklin has become but they take a walk around the neighborhood while they catch up. In one corner, the duo walks past a movie that’s in production as a nod to co-creator John Singleton’s hit film Boyz In The Hood, released in 1991, the year Snowfall ends.

Isaiah John as Leon Simmons, Damson Idris as Franklin Saint

“If you think about it in some ways, Snowfall is a little bit of a prologue to Boyz, and how the neighborhood got to the point you experience in the film,” series co-creator Dave Andron. “We did jump forward in time a number of years and we didn’t put an actual date on it but the newspapers that Leon steps on the street are from September 1990, which was when John started filming Boyz in the Hood. It was very intentional to drop back into that moment in time to pick up that story where John picked it up with the movie. That was a little tip of the hat to him.”

Now, for anyone wondering why the decision was made not to kill off Franklin and put him out of misery, Andron explains.

“It’s funny because when we talked about whether should Franklin die, there was a contingent of people who felt that that was an easy way out. That that him dying means he doesn’t have to face the damage he’s done. He destroyed this neighborhood and did unreal damage to his community. They really needed a helping hand and what they got was another plague. I think in those terms, the dramatic irony of him having no place to live except for Cissy’s house where he will constantly be faced with what he has wrought felt like a certain kind of hell. Now he has to be on the street with these junkies who he in some way is responsible for. The dramatic irony of that felt right to us,” said Andron.

Damson is proud to be part of Singleton’s legacy; Snowfall serves as the filmmaker’s final project before his death in 2019. His time with Singleton will be forever cherished.

“My favorite moments were my time with John Singleton, building the character and discovering the world and just educating myself on the era. So many people didn’t know about certain things related to the crack epidemic,” Idris said. “You look at the laws that came from it, the bias and the Clinton administration and so many things that impacted Black people in this country. It was amazing to understand that history.”

As Deadline exclusively confirmed in late March, a spinoff is in early development with the character of Wanda rumored to be the connective tissue between the original show and the offshoot. In the series finale, Leon mentions he and Wanda are back in Los Angeles because she’s interested in producing music potentially setting up the show’s follow-up.

“She came back from Africa at the very end, and even though we don’t see her we hear about her from Leon, she’s back and she’s got a dream,” Andron shared. “She’s gonna have a whole life and she’s found something she’s passionate about, something she wants to be a part of. This for me goes back to the Wanda whom we first met. If that creativity and heart go into music, I feel like she might actually be able to carve something out.”

He continued, “And you know, West Coast hip hop is about to explode. So telling the story of what’s been going on in South Central in the way that Singleton told it with Boyz N The Hood. And so as you know, it leaked out there that we may try to continue telling that story because it felt worthy of Snowfall, and I felt worthy of John Singleton. So we’re gonna see if we can figure that out.”

SPOILER ALERT: The following story reveals major

The attorney for embattled actor Jonathan Majors — who was arrested last month on suspicion of assault and charged with misdemeanors a day later — has filed evidence with a New York court that appears to show the accuser uninjured and out on the town after parting ways with the “Creed III” star the night of the alleged incident.

Majors was charged March 27 with misdemeanor assault and harassment. In the complaint, the alleged victim said the “Lovecraft Country” actor, 33, struck her “about the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear.”

In a letter to the court dated Tuesday and accepted Wednesday, and reviewed by The Times, Majors’ attorney, Priya Chaudhry, challenged Asst. D.A. Kelli Galaway’s request for a court date later than the May 8 appearance that is on the calendar and presented evidence she said had been given to the ADA for review. The evidence shows Majors’ accuser seemingly unharmed in the hours after the two parted company.

A new Variety report said “multiple alleged abuse victims of Majors” had come forward since the actor’s arrest and were cooperating with the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The D.A.’s office declined to comment on that report, the outlet said. But Majors’ attorney disputed it.

“This story is baseless and without any foundation,” Chaudhry told The Times via email. “Jonathan Majors is innocent and has not abused anyone. Mr. Majors is currently considering his legal options.”

Contrary to the charges Majors faces, Chaudhry alleges in the filing that after attacking her client and tearing his clothes between midnight and 1 a.m. on March 25, the accuser “went clubbing, got drunk, sent Mr. Majors angry text messages accusing him of infidelity, sent a suicide note to Mr. Majors, took a bunch of sleeping pills, and then, eleven hours later, was found alone in a locked bedroom, unconscious on the floor of a closet, with a cut behind her ear and a broken finger.

“We have provided irrefutable evidence to the District Attorney that the charges are false,” Chaudhry said. “We are confident that he will be fully exonerated.”

Stills taken from security-camera footage and submitted to the court appear to show the accuser at the bar, DJ booth and hostess stand of Loosie’s Nightclub at the Moxy Lower East Side hotel between 1:55 a.m. and 3:06 a.m. March 25.

Chaudhry also cites an $800 champagne purchase during that time that the accuser allegedly charged to Majors’ credit card without permission. The security stills show the accuser at the bar with two uninjured hands as she sorts through credit cards and signs a receipt. They also show her with uninjured hands at the hostess stand and DJ booth.

Separate security video from an elevator car appears to show the accuser uninjured around 3:25 a.m. The letter says that video from the nightclub shows the woman brushing hair behind an uninjured ear — which the accuser said Majors lacerated.

Chaudhry told the court that the driver of a car, where the two allegedly fought, would testify that it was the accuser who attacked Majors that night, begged him to get back in the car after he got out, then resumed violent attempts to take Majors’ phone away. Chaudhry said this happened between midnight and 1 a.m.

According to Chaudhry, Majors again jumped out of the car and ran away — witnessed by “the driver and three people standing in the street” — then hailed a taxi and went to a hotel. The letter says he didn’t see the accuser again until after 11 a.m., when he returned home and called a handyman to unlock his bedroom door. Once inside, the letter says, Majors found the woman unconscious on the floor of the closet.

Chaudhry wrote to the court that “we are hopeful that the District Attorney’s Office will move quickly to dismiss this case.”

Majors was arrested March 25 after police responded to a 911 call from a New York City apartment building. He was arraigned the following day. The NYPD said in a statement that Majors was involved in a “domestic dispute” with a 30-year-old woman who told police she was assaulted.

The woman was transported to a local hospital with what police called minor injuries to her head and neck.

Majors was reportedly dropped recently by his management and publicity firms and cut from several film projects.

Loki Season 2 has received a new release date update as the abuse allegations and controversy worsen surrounding Kang actor Jonathan Majors.

The long-awaited Loki continuation marks an important MCU chapter as it will serve as the next appearance for Jonathan Majors’ Avengers 5 villain Kang. But his fate remains up in the air as the actor faces accusations of abuse, assault, and harassment, something he and his team continue to deny.

Loki Season 2 Plans Disney+ Release Amid Star Controversy

Marvel

As part of Variety’s latest report on Jonathan Majors’ ongoing alleged abuse case, the Hollywood trade had an update to offer regarding the Disney+ release of Kang’s next MCU appearance, Loki Season 2.

The report claimed Loki Season 2 is now expected to come to Disney+ in mid-2023 following many shifts. Marvel Studios’ next Disney+ series comes with Secret Invasion on June 21, with the six-episode event likely to wrap up on July 26.

Mobius actor Owen Wilson previously shared his expectation for Season 2 to arrive at the “end of the summer or September.” Meanwhile, insider KC Walsh claimed to have heard of a September release plan for Loki.

Majors’ scenes for the Loki follow-up have long been shot, with the actor rumored to return as multiple Kang Variants, including the 20th-century genius Victor Timely, who was teased in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

Disney is said to be “monitoring” the situation as it rapidly continues to develop, although Variety noted it has “time to move deliberately,” especially with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty reportedly not filming until spring 2024.

Why Jonathan Majors’ Controversy Won’t Impact Loki Season 2

Jonathan Majors’ Kang has been rumored to have a bigger role in Loki Season 2 than he did in Season 1, stepping up to appear in at least three episodes compared to his one-episode finale role in the freshman outing. As part of this, the actor will apparently be bringing multiple Kang Variants to life this time around.

This supposedly comes as part of Loki and Mobius’ mission to track down Kang Variants across the Multiverse to “map out and see the extent of their control across time.” Among these Variants will be Ant-Man 3‘s terrifying Victor Timely, who seems to have an intriguing role to play in Season 2.

With the Avengers villain set for a major role at the crux of the season, Majors will likely have to be involved heavily in the marketing. Obviously, this comes as no easy task if the actor is unable to shut down this controversy and ultimately prove his innocence in court when his trial takes place on May 8.

As of now, the latest update stated Marvel Studios was “discussing options” with Majors’ team as the situation continues to unfold. However, a recent rumor did reveal the studio may seek a Damson Idris-type actor to takeover as Kang if the situation deteriorated enough to require a recast.

Since Majors apparently has a significant role in Loki Season 2 and production is long complete, reshooting his scenes with a recast actor is almost inconceivable. This means the chances of a delay are slim, as the season appears to be in good shape and will be ready to release in likely either August or September.

The MCU’s Phase 5 slate has been ever-changing as Marvel Studios makes changes in response to the Phase 4 backlash. Two of the only projects to receive minimal changes during this have been Secret Invasion and Loki Season 2.

Loki Season 2 has yet to set an official release date.

As the lights dim to signal the beginning of the film adaptation of Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret, fans of the best-selling novel might find themselves whispering in hope, “Are you there, God? It’s me, a fan of this book… Please let this movie be as great as the novel.” Moments into the film, anyone who knows and loves the story of protagonist Margaret Simon will take one look at actress Abby Ryder Fortson’s pure and sprightly face as she moves carefree and happy throughout summer camp, and they will exhale.

Yes, to every one of the over nine million people across the globe who have purchased, read, and loved the novel over the last 50 years, God is also present in the film. So, too, is the spirit of Judy Blume’s incredible work.

Set in the 1970s, and yet timeless, Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret, by Judy Blume, is about a sixth grade girl who has a Christian mother and a Jewish father and who, as an only child, is forced to grow up without a religious attachment as a result of her parent’s interfaith marriage. They have an agreement to let Margaret find God, or religion, on her own as an adult or if and when she is ever ready.

Instead, when she settles into her new life after her family’s sudden move to New Jersey, Margaret seeks help from and finds God on her own. Facing the awkward and confusing trials of adolescence — such as waiting to get her first menstrual period, her first bra, new friends, missing her grandmother whom she now lives far away from, and her first kiss — it’s all just too difficult to go at alone.

This classic coming-of-age story, inspired by the author’s own life, has been beloved by middle grade readers since its publication debut in 1970. In Blume’s signature style, the book is relatable, unflinching, unapologetic, and delightful as a result. Due to the novel’s frank focus on pre-teen hormones and puberty, however, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret was one of the most banned books in history. Regardless of how much it has been criticized, it has been much more embraced by readers for decades and remains a global sensation.

Blume’s loyal fans will be relieved that screenwriter and director, Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen), has led the novel’s adaptation into what is a gentle and conscientious film with the promise to be as everlasting and cherished as the novel. The film adaptation is sure to be a hit, and stars Rachel McAdams, Abby Ryder Fortson, Benny Safdie, and Kathy Bates.

Thank God, They Got These Things Right

Perhaps the best thing about adapting a novel for film or television is that there is a built-in and proven audience for the story. That also supplies the greatest challenge. Viewers, if they are also fans of the story in its original form, will scrutinize and assess whether the production got it right or not.

Against the grain of a current societal norm to keep the subject of God tucked away in a taboo closet and out of everything from public schools to most film and television series, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret kept God in the title and, as in the novel, as nearly a supporting character. Had producers caved to the pressures of not talking about God, there would quite literally not be much of a plot for the movie.

However, and as is also true to the novel, viewers aren’t faced with didactic preaching about religion. Margaret’s journey to get to the root of her struggles with religion is sparked by a class writing assignment in which she realizes that, while she has discovered an ability to find God while she is alone, she struggles to connect with Him in the various religious-based buildings where she searches. The film’s approach to Margaret’s self-journey is not isolating or offensive to any religion, and that is also one of the many reasons why the novel is beloved across all faiths or even those who lack thereof.

It’s Me, The 1970s

Lionsgate

Fremon Craig did not delete God from the script and also did not modernize the setting. Instead, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, is rooted right where it belongs, in the 1970s. While it may have been a decade that some may associate with political disorder and the Vietnam War, this movie captures the tranquil texture of more unassuming and easier times.

“There is a cliché of 70s culture comprising Pop Art colors and Yellow Submarine graphics,” said production designer Steve Saklad (Juno). “But that’s only one really narrow part of the 70s. The story we’re telling was set in suburban New Jersey, and that look is very different.”

Fremon Craig noted, too, that she visualized the texture of The Virgin Suicides as she penned the screenplay. Fans of her acclaimed coming-of-age film The Edge of Seventeen will appreciate the tonal comparisons to it and also the matter-of-fact placement of details throughout. Frame by frame, there is always something to take note of beyond the actors and the lines being spoken. There are Tab sodas on the table, Keds sneakers, a summer camp trunk, a typewriter, and plenty more subtle touches throughout.

A choice had to be made regarding whether to deviate from the original story. The greatest attribute to this adaptation is that it does not. Instead, it does what truly great adaptations do. Like an enchanted awakening, it simply breathes life into the pages and lets the story live on screen. Scene by scene, the story unfolds precisely as readers have imagined.

Improving Upon Blume’s Book

Dell Yearling

Still, part of the goal of an adaptation is to ensure that there is enough wish fulfillment for fans hoping that the story still rings true while also ensuring that enough is added to attract an even wider audience from the film world. How does one improve upon an established classic? Is it even possible?

Margaret’s mother Barbara, portrayed by Rachel McAdams, has a story arc that — due to the limitations of the novel’s first-person narrative — readers didn’t get to see, but audiences will. Hers is a fully fleshed out journey due to the omniscient ability of a film’s approach. Barbara’s struggles are notably parallel to Margaret’s. While trying to help her daughter navigate life, Barbara, too, is at times awkward and indecisive and unsure, searching for ways to stand up for herself among her peers and, yes, even to find her place in the world. Much like Margaret, she is a beloved character because of all of her imperfectness.

In an unexpected but refreshing and appreciated twist, another unexpected improvement upon Blume’s classic novel’s plot, is the re-imagining of several of the characters’ ethnicities. While Margaret, Nancy, and Gretchen are visually spot on as described and imagined from the book, the fourth best-friend in the book, Janie, is portrayed by actress Amari Alexis Price, who is African-American, unlike in the novel.

Girl prays on floor in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret
Lionsgate

Additional re-imagining of the race of characters as African-American include Echo Kellum (Key & Peele) in the role of Mr. Benedict and JeCobi Swain (Home Economics) in a charming portrayal as Freddy. An ethnically ambiguous Moose Freed is portrayed by Aiden Wojtak-Hissong (I Am Not Okay With This), to round out the production’s choice to embrace diversity.

While the themes of Blume’s novel have always been universal — and most pre-teens can relate to the angst that Margaret endures — it was only Blume’s novel, Iggie’s House, where non-white characters distinctly appeared. Whereas most fans of Blume’s work have enjoyed her stories without the burden of feeling isolated, it is a welcomed improvement to see the adaptation’s attention to inclusivity in an unforced but intentional way.

Another deliberate choice was to show readers exactly how to do the breast-enhancing exercise that the group of girls does in hopes of speeding puberty along. This, so they can hurry up and look like the women in Playboy magazine.

“When you read the book, everybody has their own interpretation of how the ‘I must—I must—I must increase my bust’ exercise is done,” Fortson said. “We tried so many variations of it; when Judy finally taught us the right way, it was like, ‘Oh, oh, that makes so much sense!’ We were all laughing and doubling over.”

The cast of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is stellar and yet, despite the casting of larger than life actors such as Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Benny Safdie, the cast blends as an ensemble interwoven as smooth and as cool as the soundtrack which ushers in scenes and transitions with clap-along-energy. From Katherine Mallen Kupferer’s (Widows) picture-perfect performance as Gretchen, to Judy Blume’s cameo appearance (credited as Neighbor Walking Dog #1), every actor’s presence is allowed to count in this film.

In addition to the winning and seamless portrayal of Abby Ryder Fortson’s as Margaret alongside McAdams as her mother, there are quite a few standout performances to note. Kathy Bates, as Margaret’s grandmother, Sylvia Simon, could steal every scene she is in if not for her keen ability to let the talented cast in which she shares scenes with shine as well. Every moment where Bates is on-screen is unsurprisingly memorable.

Fans of the novel will appreciate the true-to-character excellent performance from Elle Graham (The Walking Dead) as Nancy Wheeler. She isn’t politically or socially or even virtuously correct in her choices. She says what’s on her mind without hesitation. “Oh, you’re still flat,” she said to Margaret after she had changed into a bathing suit on the first day they met. And yet, with such subtle care for the subtext of intention, viewers will find Nancy’s character, just as Margaret does, quite likable.

It’s hard to say for sure if viewers outside the novel’s dedicated readers will appreciate Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret in its stand-alone film position as much as those who both know and love the novel surely will.

Viewers in search of a coming-of-age feel-good movie with sprinkles of grit in its realness and a warm blanket of tenderness over its approach to complicated emotions — much in the vain of Stand By Me, Dazed and Confused, and The Edge of Seventeen — will find a familiar place to nestle up and enjoy a great film with this instant classic adaptation.

Its not bad at all, as it features a decent cel-shaded presentation, runs like a dream, and features really responsive controls. Sadly, even though the foundations are solid, its main gimmick is a bit too clunky and confusing. I love shooters, and I love Guitar Hero but combining these two games, without leeways, resulted in a messy experience.”

The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the poster for its upcoming 76th edition which pays tribute to iconic French actress Catherine Deneuve. Scroll down to see it.

The image shows Deneuve standing on Pampelonne beach, near Saint-Tropez, for the shoot of Alain Cavalier’s 1968 romantic drama Heartbeat (La Chamade), adapted from the novel by Françoise Sagan.

Deneuve stars as a beautiful woman who oscillates between her older businessman lover and a charming young man of her own age, played by Michel Piccoli and Roger Van Hool.

“She plays Lucile, who leads a worldly and superficial life, tinged with ease and a taste for luxury. Her heart beats frantically, hurriedly, passionately,” said the festival in a statement. “Like the heart of cinema that the Festival de Cannes celebrates every year: its lively and embodied pulse can be heard everywhere. The heart of the 7th Art – of its artists, professionals, amateurs, press – beats like a drum, to the rhythm of the urgency that its eternal nature imposes.”

“The actress of Peau d’Âne is an embodiment of cinema, far from what is conventional or appropriate. Without compromise and always in tune with her convictions, even if it means going against the grain of the times. She is the muse of Jacques Demy, Agnès Varda, Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut, Marco Ferreri, Manoel de Oliveira, André Téchiné, Emmanuelle Bercot or Arnaud Desplechin,” it added.

The poster was created by Lionel Avignon and Stefan de Vivies at Hartland Villa from a photo by Jack Garofalo on the set of La Chamade.

The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 16 to 27.

Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award goes to Asha Bhosle

Instituted in the memory of the late great singer, Lata Mangeshkar, on whom the highest civilian honour of India, the Bharat Ratna was bestowed by the Indian government, this is the second such annual honour that her family awards. The first one, given last year, went to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Lata Mangeshkar, who sang thousands of songs, from the 1940s into the new millennium, passed away on 06 February 1922. She sang in numerous languages and composed music for a few films too. Deenanath was her father and guru, and a revered singer composer. All her siblings – Meena, Asha, Usha and Hridaynath –  have made significant contributions to music, mainly film music.

It is the 81st death anniversary of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar. The Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Smruti Pratisthan (Memorial Institute), which is a Charitable Trust, registered in Pune, set-up in his memory. For the last 33 years, this Institute felicitates legends from various fields, like music, drama, art, medicine and social work. Awards are distributed on the 24th April every year, because that day marks the death anniversary of Master Deenanath, who died at the early age of 42. A Press Conference was held on 18 April, at Prabhu Kunj, the Mangeshkars’ family abode at Peddar Road, in South Mumbai, to announce the awards and give the media a chance to interact with the Mangeshkar family.

Present on the occasion were Usha Mangeshkar 87), Hridaynath (82), who is recovering from a long bout of illness, and Aadinath Mangeshkar (63). Aadinath was the main speaker and his father and aunt later answered the queries of the media. Lata’s other two sisters are Meena Mangeshkar (Khadikar, 91) and Asha Bhosle (now in her 90th year). A true legend, Asha Bhosle has continued to be active well into her 80s.

Last year, when Narendra Modi agreed to receive the award, the joy of the Pratishthan members knew no bounds. He flew down from New Delhi, to receive the award in person. Sadly, for Hridaynath, fondly called Bal (boy) by his near and dear ones, the joy of being present on the occasion was denied to him, as he had recently taken ill. It is only after a year of treatment that there has been perceptible improvement in his health, and he will attend the event this year. The awards ceremony, which includes music and dance performances, will be held on the 24th of April at Shanmukhananda Hall, Sion Mumbai. Music stars Rahul Deshpande (a classical music singer and the recipient of the 68th national award of the best playback singer for the biopic Mee Vasantrao. He is the grandson of another legendary singer, Vasantrao Deshpande), and A. Hariharan (playback singer, ghazal singer, fusion music guru) will be on stage. There will also be a kathak dance performance by Meghranjini Medhi and Marami Medhi (daughter and mother duo), who will be accompanied by Pandit Joyprakash Medhi (Meghranjini’s father, a singer and music composer) providing vocals, Pandit Pranshu Chaturlal and Vinay Mundhe on the table, and Shubham Ugale on the pakhawaj. Assamese dancer Meghranjini Medhi,33, is an international kathak Dancer from Assam, India, and a reputed actor in the Assamese film industry.

Asha Bhosle is a winner of Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest award in the field of cinema. In 2008, she was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honour of the country, after the Bharat Ratna. One will need to write tomes in her praise, to do justice. Suffice to say that if there is one singer in India who is the torch-bearer of Lata Mangeshkar’s legacy, it is her sister Asha. Possessing a different tonal quality, she carved a niche for herself way back in the early 1950s. There is no hesitation in saying that among light/film music singers, she has no competition. Of course, the Asha of 2023 cannot sound like the Asha of 1953, but that hardly matters to those who have savoured her artistry over the decades. In 2013, Bhosle made her acting debut, in the Hindi film Mai, in the title role, at the age of 79. She played the role of a 65-year-old mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and is abandoned by her children. In May 2020, aged 87, Bhosle launched her YouTube channel named Asha Bhosle Official.

Other awardees in 2023 include Pankaj Udhas, mainly a ghazal singer, for his contribution to Indian music, Gauri Theatres of Prashant Damle Fan Foundation, for best play of the year, Niyam Va Ati Lagu, Shri Sadguru Seva Sangh, for “yeoman’s social service”, Granthali Prakashan with the Vagvilasini Puraskar, for contribution to literature, Prasad Oak with the Vishesh Puraskar, for contribution to cinema and Drama, and Vidya Balan with the Vishesh Puraskar for contribution to cinema. A three-member committee shortlisted the awardees after a selection process. Each award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1,11,000 and certificate.

Prabhu Kunj has very fond memories for this writer. Back in the late 1960s and early 1970, I was a member of a youth organisation called the Junior Jaycees. We often held our monthly meetings at the hall on the ground floor of this building. I also have precious memories of interviewing Lata Mangeshkar at her home, in the same building, during the mid-1980s.

Unless it turns out to be yet another one of Elon Musk’s dumb jokes, at some time on Thursday, April 20 (get it? 4/20), Twitter’s verification system will end when all so-called “legacy” verified accounts will lose their blue checks. At that point, only people who agree to pay the world’s richest man $8 for a subscription to “Twitter Blue” will be able to have one.

Going just by his public statements, Musk seems to think that revoking verified status will convince users to subscribe in order to subsidize his (vastly overpaid) $44 billion purchase of the site. But at least when it comes to some of Twitter’s most notable celebrity users, he’s sadly (or, if you prefer, hilariously) mistaken. Glittery Twitterati including Oscar Winner Halle Berry, “Abbott Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson, Tony Award-winner Jeffrey Wright, “and “Mission Impossible” mainstay director Christopher McQuarrie and actress Valerie Bertinelli are giving him the bird.

In March, Musk announced that legacy verification checkmarks would go away on April 1. That is, of course, April Fool’s Day, which is why many assumed he was joking. Naturally, April 1 came and went without the policy coming into effect. 20 days later, almost every “legacy” user still has their blue check — with one notable exception being the New York Times.

Last week, Musk announced that legacy blue checks would go away on April 20, and since that date happens to double as one of the most played out cannabis references on earth, it’s still not entirely clear if it’ll actually happen. If it does, it’s gonna be a lot less star-studded than the blue check scene is right now.

“I can also be reached on instagram. Good luck, folks,” McQuarrie tweeted.

“Me joining you all tomorrow unverified ?,” Berry tweeted while showing a clip of her walking onto a talk show set waving.

“Bite me,” Bertinelli wrote.

“This really works out for me because I was planing on never using this website again after tonight, anyway. Just wanted to stay to give Abbott updates ? By the way, Thanks to our fans here for watching and sharing all season,” Brunson said, adding, “I will be like this tomorrow though,” along with a gif of Nicole Kidman shouting for joy.

“Could you maybe delete the app from my phone, too, and also throw the phone in a river?” Wright said.

Like every other site that verifies users, the original purpose of Twitter verification — slangily referred to as “blue check status” — was to confirm the authenticity of prominent accounts. The blue check next to someone’s username indicated that they are who they say they are and also makes it harder for malicious users to impersonate celebrities, politicians, journalists, activists, organizations and other public-facing Twitter accounts.

Tomorrow however — as Politico put it in March when it joined the majority of major American media companies and informed employees that it would neither pay for Twitter blue of cover Twitter blue subscriptions for employees — having a blue check no longer means anything other than that you were willing to pay for it.

See who else in Hollywood and elsewhere isn’t paying for a blue check below.

Robin Thede ain’t here for any more Emmy snubs for the hilarious Black women from “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”

“We’re showing you the characters behind the characters,” she recently told Variety at a Q&A panel. “I love it. You see the full range of actors on the show. But I want to note that none of the show’s actors have ever been nominated for an Emmy, and they deserve it.”

Four seasons into the groundbreaking HBO series, the creative minds and strategists hope to change that.

Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Emmy predictions.

HBO confirms exclusively to Variety that the network will be submitting the six-episode Season 4 for 30 Emmy categories, notably outstanding scripted variety series (formerly called variety sketch series, where it was nominated for its first three seasons) and three main acting categories: Thede for lead comedy actress and Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend for supporting comedy actress.

Acting nominees for various sketch comedies have benefited “Saturday Night Live” cast members in recent years, such as two-time winner Kate McKinnon. In 2008, the Emmys retired the category for outstanding individual performance in a variety or music program, leaving actors from sketch shows to seek recognition alongside scripted narrative performers.

Townsend, who joined “A Black Lady Sketch Show” a featured player in Season 2 before being promoted to the main cast the following season, has become a standout. The 29-year-old steals the show in multiple sketches with hilarious characters such as one of The Bible Ladies in “The Mange-Her” (“water is free?”) and “Plugged In” as Omarion’s big-lipped-and-hipped girlfriend LaDonna (“I’m gonna be like Michelle Omarion-Bama”).

The road for Thede faces more obstacles due to fewer open slots and more competition. Depending on the number of acting submissions, lead comedy actress will likely yield five or six possibilities while supporting will max out at eight.

Noteworthy, only one Black woman has won lead comedy actress in 75 years: Isabel Sanford for “The Jeffersons” in 1981. In addition, two have won for supporting comedy actress — Jackée Harry for “227” in 1987 and, most recently, Sheryl Lee Ralph for “Abbott Elementary” in 2022.

Despite main actors being snubbed, “A Black Lady Sketch Show’s” guest performers have found luck with the TV Academy with three previous nominees: Yvette Nicole Brown and Issa Rae in 2021 and Angela Bassett in 2020. Brown and Rae will be among the submitted guests this year, along with Tracee Ellis Ross, Jackée Harry, Kyla Pratt and Kym Whitley. In addition, the potential guest actor lineup will include Colman Domingo, Jay Ellis, Omarion, Sam Richardson and Leonard Robinson.

The sketch series has claimed three history-making Emmy statuettes over its seasons.

In 2021, the show won the award for outstanding picture editing for variety programming (Daysha Broadway, Stephanie Filo and Jess Hernandez), becoming the first-ever all-women-of-color team recognized for nominations and winning. Only one Black editor had won the category previously — Lance Cain in 2004 for “A&E in Concert: Paul McCartney in Red Square.”

At last year’s ceremony, along with a consecutive win for editing (Filo, Taylor Mason, Bradinn French and S. Robyn Wilson), Bridget Stokes became the first Black woman to win directing for a variety series for helming the episode “Save My Edges, I’m a Donor!,” breaking “SNL’s” five-year winning streak.

By the end of the premiere screening on April 13 at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Los Angeles, the legacy of “Black Lady Sketch Show” had become apparent. Thede has created the foundation of a series, like Lorne Michaels with “SNL” back in 1975, that will become a breeding ground for hilarious and influential Black comedians coming up in the industry. Aside from Thede and Dennis, who has been part of the main cast since its inception, even Quinta Brunson of “Abbott Elementary” was on the first season before moving on to her hit ABC sitcom.

“A Black Lady Sketch Show” airs Fridays at 11 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and streams on HBO Max. The complete list of the category submissions is below:

  • Outstanding Scripted Variety Series – Robin Thede, Issa Rae, Tony Hernandez, Brooke Posch, David Becky, Jonathan Berry, executive producers; Chloé Hilliard, Monique Moses, Bridget Stokes, co-executive producers; Linda Morel, co-executive producer/line producer; Corin Wells, John Skidmore, Montrel McKay, producers

Listen. I am a Taylor Swift fan. Saw her in Vegas and I have tickets for LA. When I read the news about her breakup with Joe Alwyn, I texted three different people. So believe me when I say I have no hate in my heart for the fandom, but seriously guys, this is a streeeeeeetch.

Alwyn, a low-key actor who, by all reports, treated Swift very well during their six-year relationship, isn’t super active on social media and is very private about his personal life, forcing Swifties to do what they do best to fill in the gaps: read way too much into every little thing.

This week, it’s a picture posted by Emma Laird, Alwyn’s co-star in The Brutalist, which is currently filming. Laird included Alwyn in a round-up of pics from March that she posted on April 18 (looks like film, so, assuming it took a couple of weeks to get developed unless it’s just a good filter). Certain TikTokers immediately started speculating that Ms. Laird was somehow responsible for Swift’s breakup, which sadly resulted in a flurry of misogynistic responses, ridiculous rumor-mongering, and overall immaturity that seemingly forced Laird to turn off her comments. Like, what is Alwyn supposed to do, never speak to another woman again?

But anyway, the other “controversial” part of the picture is the prop Alwyn is posing with: A green Lime scooter.

Twitter content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

You know, a scooter. LIKE SCOOTER BRAUN, SWIFT’S NEMESIS!!!!!!!!!

ICYMI, Braun is a music exec who counts Demi Lovato and Justin Bieber among his management clients. Swift once claimed she was subjected to “incessant, manipulative bullying” by Braun and his purchase of her master recordings prompted Swift’s longest, most iconic scheme to date: re-recording all her old albums (slay). In the video for “The Man,” written and directed by Swift, there is a “no scooter” sign that fans have interpreted as a diss against Braun, which seems reasonable given the pop star’s penchant for literal symbolism. Anyways, stream “Vigilante Shit.”

Brand placements are a form of advertising where a product or brand is integrated into the content of a movie or TV show. While they are prevalent in modern media, there has been growing concern about the negative effects that brand placements can have on the artistic integrity of movies and the culture of consumerism they promote.

In this article, we argue that brand placements in movies should be stopped altogether, except for certain cases such as casinos or gambling establishments. We will explore the disruptive effects of brand placements on the narrative and immersion of movies, and how they encourage materialism and consumerism. We will also suggest alternative revenue streams for filmmakers and encourage viewers to be more critical of brand placements when they do appear in movies.

Brand Placements as a Form of Advertising

Brand placements are a type of advertising that is becoming increasingly popular among marketers. This is because brand placements are often seen as more effective than traditional forms of advertising, such as TV commercials, due to their subtlety and the fact that they can be integrated seamlessly into the content of a movie or TV show.

When done correctly, brand placements can be an effective way for companies to increase their brand recognition and generate sales. They can also be used to enhance the realism of a movie or TV show by incorporating real-world products and brands into the narrative. For example, a character drinking a Coca-Cola or wearing Nike shoes can help to make the story more relatable and authentic.

However, there are several issues with brand placements that make them problematic. Firstly, brand placements can be disruptive to the narrative and immersion of a movie or TV show. Viewers can become distracted from the story when they see a product or brand that is being prominently displayed. This can take away from the overall viewing experience and undermine the artistic integrity of the movie.

Furthermore, brand placements can encourage consumerism and materialism. They can promote the idea that owning certain products is necessary for a happy and successful life, leading to a culture of consumption that can be detrimental to individuals and society as a whole.

Negative Effects of Brand Placements in Movies

Despite their benefits, brand placements in movies can have several negative effects on the viewing experience, the artistic integrity of the movie, and the culture of consumerism they promote.

One of the primary issues with brand placements is that they can be disruptive to the narrative and immersion of the movie. When a product or brand is prominently displayed, it can take viewers out of the story and break the suspension of disbelief. This can be especially problematic if the placement is overly blatant or out of place, as it can make viewers feel like they are being sold to rather than being entertained.

Another negative impact of brand placements is that they encourage consumerism and materialism. By showcasing certain products and brands, movies can promote the idea that owning these items is necessary for a happy and successful life. This can lead to a culture of consumption that encourages individuals to constantly buy more and more products, leading to financial difficulties and environmental degradation.

Additionally, brand placements can undermine the artistic integrity of movies. Filmmakers are often forced to include certain products or brands in their movies in exchange for funding or sponsorship, which can limit their creative freedom and result in movies that are more focused on marketing than on storytelling.

Lastly, brand placements can lack transparency and disclosure. Viewers may not be aware that certain products or brands are being promoted in a movie, leading to a lack of transparency in advertising and marketing practices.

The Positive Impact of Brand Placements

While there are several negative effects of brand placements in movies, it is important to acknowledge that there can be positive impacts as well. When used strategically and sparingly, brand placements can be an effective way for companies to increase brand awareness and generate sales while also enhancing the realism of a movie or TV show.

One positive impact of brand placements is that they can help to make a movie or TV show more authentic and relatable to viewers. By including real-world products and brands in the narrative, movies can create a sense of familiarity and connection with the audience, which can help to enhance their overall enjoyment of the movie.

Brand placements can also be a source of revenue for filmmakers. By partnering with companies and including their products or brands in their movies, filmmakers can secure funding that can be used to improve the quality of the movie, hire better talent, or expand their marketing efforts.

Brand placements can also have a positive impact on industries like casinos and gambling. In movies, casinos can be portrayed as luxurious, exciting, and glamorous, which can help to increase interest in gambling and attract more customers. For example, a Bovada review in a movie that prominently features the casino’s brand can lead to increased interest in visiting the casino among viewers, resulting in increased revenue for the casino and positive exposure for the brand, which in turn may lead to generating revenue for movie studios and filmmakers.

By partnering with casinos and featuring their brands in movies, filmmakers can secure funding that can be used to improve the quality of the movie, hire better talent, or expand their marketing efforts. In some cases, casinos and gambling can also be used as a backdrop to showcase the storyline or characters, adding depth and realism to the movie.

Alternatives to Brand Placements in Movies

There are several alternatives to brand placements in movies that can still provide valuable exposure to brands without being disruptive to the viewing experience or compromising the artistic integrity of the movie.

One alternative is product integration, which involves integrating a brand or product into the narrative of the movie in a more subtle and organic way. This approach involves incorporating a product or brand into the story in a way that feels natural and enhances the realism of the movie. For example, a character in a movie might be seen drinking a particular brand of soda or driving a certain type of car without it feeling like a forced or unnatural product placement.

Another alternative is to use in-movie advertising, which involves creating ads that are placed within the context of the movie rather than interrupting the viewing experience. These ads can take the form of billboards or signs in the background of a scene, radio or TV commercials playing in the background, or even product displays within a store or restaurant scene.

Brands can also leverage social media and influencer marketing to promote their products and reach their target audience. For example, a brand might partner with a popular social media influencer to promote their product to their followers in a way that feels authentic and engaging.

Lastly, brands can also create their own original content, such as web series, short films, or documentaries that feature their products or brand in a more subtle and organic way. By creating their own content, brands can have more control over the message and tone of the marketing, while still reaching a large audience.

Conclusion

Brand placements in movies have been a popular marketing strategy for decades, providing companies with a way to reach a large and diverse audience. While there are certainly benefits to this approach, such as increased brand awareness and potential revenue for filmmakers, there are also negative effects to consider, such as potential disruptions to the viewing experience and a loss of artistic integrity.

Therefore, it is important for companies to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits of brand placements in movies before pursuing this marketing strategy. In some cases, alternative approaches such as product integration, in-movie advertising, social media marketing, influencer partnerships, or original content creation might be more effective and respectful to the art of filmmaking.

Ultimately, it is up to both companies and filmmakers to strike a balance between marketing objectives and artistic integrity. By doing so, they can create a win-win situation that benefits both the brand and the art of filmmaking, while also providing a positive viewing experience for audiences.

  • James Holzhauer is an American gambler, TV personality, and Jeopardy! champion.
  • He is also a cast member of The Chase, another trivia game show.
  • James is set to compete on Jeopardy! Masters on May 8, 2023, alongside other impressive contestants.

James Holzhauer, 38, became the third-highest-earning American game show contestant of all time after he went on a 32-game winning streak on Jeopardy! from April to June 2019 and won again in the Tournament of Champions in November 2019. In addition to earning a whopping total of $2,714,416 in Jeopardy! games, he won an additional $250, 000 for the Tournament of Champions and it’s led him to compete for the ultimate win in Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time contest, which took place in Jan. 2020. The impressive man competed against now-host Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, the other two top contestants from Jeopardy!, in the highly anticipated competition.

Now fans will be able to watch James compete once more when he plays on  Jeopardy! Masters on May 8, 2023. Some of the other show’s prior champions returning to compete again include Dr. Sam Buttrey, Matt Amodio, Andrew He, Mattea Roach and Amy Schneider. Ahead of the show, James took to Twitter on Apr. 12 to reveal the show’s latest promotional poster and poke fun at it. “This poster screams ‘We know you saw this tournament last year but a new supervillain has joined the cast for the sequel!’ and I am here for it,” he captioned the tweet. As we all get ready to excitingly watch in anticipation of which intelligent contestant will win the ultimate prize, here are five things you should know about James!

1. He’s A Professional Gambler From Las Vegas

James grew up in Naperville, Illinois, according to Heavy.com, where he developed a competitive spirit and a love for games. He reportedly helped lead the Naperville North High School to a first-place finish in the Illinois State Finals Academic Challenge. James has turned his talents and skills into a lucrative career as a competitive bridge player. In 2016, he moved to Las Vegas to become a professional sports gambler.

2. This Isn’t His First Game Show

james h
James Holzhauer also stars on ‘The Chase’. (MORA/Everett Collection)

His record-shattering run on Jeopardy! is not the first time the game show world has gotten a look at James. He appeared on The Chase in 2014, an adaptation of a British game show. “I think being on The Chase made me better prepared for the pressure of the cameras and lights, and it boosted my confidence going in to Jeopardy! since I knew I was capable of winning on a big stage,” he told The Naperville Sun. James’s spouse, Melissa Holzhauer, won $28k during an appearance on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire in 2014, according to Heavy.com. The money must have bought a lot of diapers, as he and Melissa have a five-year-old daughter.

3. James Holzhauer’s Winnings On ‘Jeopardy!’

Although Ken leads the pack in the number one spot of all time after he won 74 consecutive Jeopardy! games in 2004 earning him $2,520,700, James is not far behind. His winnings put him in the number two spot with a total of 32 games won, per the Jeopardy! website. Brad caps it off in the number three spot due to winning five consecutive games back in 2000, when they were limited to five game wins at a time. He still, however, has the most earnings at $4.7 million due to tournaments.

James has proudly earned over $2,462,216 during his time on the hit game show. The most amount he won during a single game was $131,127, during his game in April 2019. James’ success on Jeopardy!, which was previously hosted by the late Alex Trebek, in 2019 helped him become the contestant who broke the record for most money won during a single episode of the long running game show on Apr. 17. On average he has won $76,944 per game.

4. He Has A Distinctive Playing Style

“My theory is that you need to be betting very aggressively on Daily Doubles and in Final Jeopardy,” James told Vulture. “I guess I’d call it strategically aggressive. I didn’t model my strategy after anyone in particular. My basic thoughts going in were, ‘Okay, I want to have some money before Daily Doubles, and if this helps take my opponents off [their] game, that’s just a bonus.’ Some players in the past have said they bounced from category from category on purpose to throw everyone. I wasn’t trying to do that at all, it wasn’t my goal. I was just trying to get as much money I could before the big bets came in to leverage that.”

However, as Wired notes, his style of “darting around the board” is a variation of what Jeopardy! fans know as the “Forrest Bounce,” named for Chuck Forrest, who pioneered the technique to throw his opponents off their game.

5. His Net Worth

James has a net worth of $2 million, per Celebrity Net Worth. The TV personality even joked about what the show has taught him during a Mar. 2023 tweet. “What is a fun fact you learned from Jeopardy!?”, the game show’s account wrote, to which he replied, “The top income tax bracket in California.”

Twitter tweeted Wednesday it is moving forward with plans to remove thousands of legacy verification check marks previously doled out to celebrities, politicians, journalists and others — roughly 20 days later than initially promised.

Elon Musk, who bought the company in October for $54.20 per share, first said that the move would start taking place on April Fools’ Day, although ultimately the only high profile account to initially lose the check mark signifying its authenticity was the New York Times.

In a tweet last week, Musk updated the timing to Thursday, which is 4/20, a repeated theme from the billionaire — who is also CEO of Tesla and SpaceX — thanks to its connection to cannabis culture. (Musk also famously tweeted he was taking Tesla private at the price of $420 per share, something he was later fined for.)

One year later, Elon Musk’s Twitter is losing support

The move will cap a busy week for Musk, who is also overseeing the attempted launch of SpaceX’s Starship on Thursday and spoke on Tesla’s earnings call Wednesday.

For more than a decade, Twitter had verified accounts with a small, blue check, a visual confirmation that the company had authenticated that the accountholder was who they said they were. But one of Musk’s first initiatives when he took over the site last fall was to declare that system would end, and instead he would instate a $7.99-per-month service that included, among other things, a blue check mark.

“Widespread verification will democratize journalism & empower the voice of the people,” he tweeted Nov. 6.

Twitter’s blue check mark was loved and loathed. Now it’s pay for play.

Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.

The decision has been controversial, with some cheering Musk’s move as a push for equality on the site, and others expressing concern that the change could make it more likely for impersonation accounts to proliferate and misinformation to spread. Twitter was forced to quickly roll back its first launch of subscription service Twitter Blue last year when impersonation accounts spread on the site.

Twitter said it would start “winding down” the legacy system and removing check marks April 1, but many accounts kept their verification past that date. Musk pushed for the New York Times to lose its badge after the publication said it would not pay for the subscription service.

Celebrities including legendary Star Trek actor William Shatner have complained about the decision.

“I want to stay on it but I want to be sure that it’s my voice, and my thoughts that people are hearing and reading, and not somebody who … wants to harm me in some way,” he previously told The Washington Post. Shatner will stay on Twitter without a check mark until he sees what “guardrails” the company introduces, he said.

Some former employees have warned that a mass removal of verified accounts could break the site, The Post has reported.

Elon Musk has changed Twitter for his own benefit

Musk tweeted last month that “any individual person’s Twitter account affiliated with a verified organization is automatically verified.” Organizations could pay $1,000 a month to verify their accounts.

Musk has engineered major changes at Twitter since he took over in a $44 billion deal last October, including cutting the majority of the staff, firing several executives and reinstating some previously banned accounts.

The dramatic changes have caused many accounts, including celebrities and government agencies, to question the usefulness of Twitter.

Longtime artistic director Todd Haimes, who’s credited for bringing New York’s Roundabout Theater Company out from bankruptcy to become one of the largest nonprofit theaters in the nation, died on Wednesday. He was 66.

Haimes died from complications from osteosarcoma, which is a bone cancer, at Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital in Manhattan, New York, according to Roundabout spokesman Matt Polk. He battled cancer since 2002, when he was first diagnosed with sarcoma of the jaw.

Haimes doubled as the artistic director and chief executive officer at Roundabout. He lead the company for roughly four decades and during his tenure has won a host of awards including: 34 Tony Awards, 58 Drama Desk Awards, and 73 Outer Critics Circle Awards.

At the age of 26, Hamies joined Roundabout in 1983 as the company’s managing director, as the organization suffered financially. He used his own money to keep the company above water but the board eventually voted to shut it down.

One board member donated enough resources to by the company some time amid the financial woes. Hamies then cut staff, and reduced expenses, and improved marketing all at the time. Additionally, he expanded the audience and created early weekday curtain times to attract the after work crowd. His efforts bowed well, as over time the company went from collapsing to becoming one of the largest nonprofit theater companies in the country.

Haimes was born in New York City in 1956, and he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University School of Management.

The New York Times reports, “Haimes is survived by his wife, Jeanne-Marie (Christman) Haimes; two children, Dr. Hilary Haimes and Andrew Haimes; two stepdaughters, Julia and Kiki Baron; and four grandchildren. His first two marriages, to Dr. Alison Haimes and Tamar Climan, ended in divorce.”

SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers for “Franklin Institute,” the Season 2 finale of “Abbott Elementary.”

Will they? Won’t they? They won’t, at least for now.

Though Janine (series creator Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) finally had their first kiss at a teacher conference in Episode 16 of “Abbott Elementary’s” second season, they chalk it up to a “whoops,” bury their feelings and continue forward as friends and colleagues.

There’s a hitch of course: Janine is dating Gregory’s friend, Maurice (Vince Staples). So in Episode 17, the blushing pair head to Bone Town — Maurice’s favorite barbecue spot — to confess their mistake to Maurice and basically break up with him together.

Finally, Janine and Gregory are single at the same time and they get closer and closer as the season wraps up. But at the start of the finale, Janine runs into Maurice again, who says casually that they’re both in their “selfish eras.” That instantly complicates things. Realizing that someone thinks of her that way makes Janine reconsider whether she’s ready for a serious relationship at all. After a day of Janine avoiding Gregory, the two finally start to hash it out during a sleep-in field trip at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute.

Brunson spoke to Variety about where the almost-couple could go from here.

At what point in writing the season did you know where this first kiss would happen and that the finale would go this way?

We started mapping it out pretty early on. There’s always room for change and rearranging, but for me as a writer, the best thing to do is say, “We want to be here in Episode 9. We want to be here in Episode 15.”‘ And we have 22, which is a blessing and a curse, because you have a lot of time to make small things happen and to make big things happen. We wound up landing on like an every-three-or-four-episodes pattern for them.

In the episodes that focus less on Janine and Gregory’s relationship, the other characters are gossiping about them.

With relationships in a workplace, it’s always a thing that other co-workers see it. Sometimes shows try to avoid that, because maybe it gives away the mystery or the climax of the situation, but I just felt, realistically, with this tight-knit group in this small school, they would know. But it’s no big deal to them. There are bigger fish to fry. Janine and Gregory — the school does not revolve around them. Most of them probably look at it like, “Ugh! These kids. Y’all like each other! Grow up!” I thought that was an interesting approach to take with the characters. “We don’t care!”

Where did the idea for the sleep-in museum field trip come from?

We really enjoyed ending on that field trip last year. I probably will want to do it every season. It’s just fun! We’re all — I think about the audience as part of the show — we’re all in this school all year, and it’s rewarding to get to go somewhere else at the end of the season, just like a regular school, and look forward to that. And I’d gone on a field trip to the Franklin Institute, but I’ve always wanted to do a sleep-in and never got to do that.

We also got excited about, “Who are these people when they go to bed?” Which wound up bringing out the Barbara [Sheryl Lee Ralph] CPAP story. Last season’s finale, we had the story of Barbara being like, “Am I near retirement?” This was a story of, “Am I ashamed of aging?” Although many people have CPAP machines, we associate it with aging. I thought it was interesting to do with Barbara, who’s so put together that you’d assume she sleeps like an angel.

Parts of this episode were shot on location in Philadelphia, which “Abbott Elementary” hasn’t done before. What was that like?

So exciting, oh my gosh. Me and Tyler were the only main cast members that went to Philly. The rest of the set of the Franklin Institute was built out at Warner Brothers. But there were some things we couldn’t rebuild. We were going to try to rebuild the [room-sized, anatomically correct] heart that Gregory and Janine have their conversation in front of, but it cost more to rebuild than just flying our whole crew to Philly. We got to get some Philadelphians involved — most of the kids in the background are Philadelphia natives and we used some crew from Philly. And it was really awesome for the crew to see the city. A lot of people had never been to Philadelphia before. They were scouting the Franklin Institute and came back and told me, “Quinta! There are a bunch of kids who just look like Abbott kids! They’re in the uniforms!” Like, yeah, it’s pretty accurate! But it was exciting for them to see just how right we got it.

All of Gregory and Janine’s big moments this season happen off-campus. That makes sense, since they’re always around kids, but this time, the kids are present. How did that impact their conversation?

The writers and I naturally fall into that space. Here are two people who care about their jobs so much, that when they’re in these four walls, they almost can’t bring themselves to talk about this big thing. And as soon as they’re not in those four walls, the boundary has dissolved in a way they’re not even ready for. But the school is the main concern, and while they’re there, they can always deflect to that. “I have to do my work. This thing is a non-existent thing. I’m making it up in my head.” When they leave, they don’t really have that option anymore. I still think they struggle with it, as we can see clearly at the teacher conference where there’s no kids to keep them from each other.

At the museum, it’s interesting, because the kids are there. Their job is there. They care about the job, but they’re also out of the school. That’s what’s pushing the admission of liking each other. Jacob [played by Chris Perfetti] knows it. The cameras know it. We know it as the audience. But they’ve never really said it to each other. So this trip evokes a certain amount of honesty, because they really can’t move on — Gregory’s not gonna live in a world in which Janine is avoiding him. Janine’s not going to live in a world where she’s going to avoid Gregory.

After Gregory confesses his feelings and Janine reciprocates, she pauses things to say, “Maybe I am selfish, and if I need to be right now, then I don’t wanna wind up hurting you.” Even with the Maurice situation, Janine is such a giver and it’s hard to see her that way. What does selfish Janine look like?

What was interesting about the Maurice angle to me was, when Janine and Gregory broke up with Maurice, we get to move on in the audience and be happy that Janine and Gregory have a chance now. But what happens to that person who was broken up with and rejected by two people? That was a little bit of a selfish act on their part. And it doesn’t make Janine a bad person, but she is genuinely shocked when Maurice doesn’t wave back at her. But why would he? He doesn’t love the way that happened, so he’s not gonna go back to being friends. Maurice had been pretty open, and when that moment happened to him, it felt like Janine wasn’t as open with him. So he had every right to feel a little slighted.

Hearing to her face that someone found her selfish, because she’s such an overthinker, it immediately becomes a race to not harm Gregory, or harm this thing that she thinks is going to be very special. To me, it’s small, but it’s big to her. She looks at Ava as selfish; she doesn’t want to be there. But if she is, she needs to deal with it and not hurt anyone ever again, especially Gregory.

After bad timing has been their main obstacle for two years, they now seem to have their first fundamental disagreement. Even though he understands her position, Gregory is on the side of the audience, where he’s ready to move on. What does that mean for their compatibility?

There’s grace and a lot of care in Gregory hearing what Janine is saying. Hearing it, caring about her and being like, “Okay. I respect that as a friend, and there’s nothing left for me to do.” Janine will focus on herself on becoming ready, examining herself to try to be like, “Okay, I think I’m ready to never do that again.” And I don’t think Gregory’s the type to wait for that, but there’s room for Janine to learn that she didn’t have to be so hard on herself about the Maurice situation, either. Dating, for young people, isn’t cut-and-dry. You’ll talk to some friends who are like, “Yeah, I stopped talking to that person. I was just afraid to this, that and the other.” But that doesn’t mean you stop talking to them! You continue to communicate! Ghosting makes the other person feel horrible. That’s how messy the dating world is, and they’re in the middle of that mess. The only thing they can do is support each other through it. Whether that be dating other people seriously, or someone saying “I’m ready now” and the person saying “I’m not” or “I don’t want to do this anymore” — they have to be friends, first and foremost. I don’t know, but it’s gonna be fun to explore when we get back to the writers room.

Moonbin of ASTRO died on April 19.

Moonbin of ASTRO died on Tuesday, April 19. The singer was known for his music and his acting projects.

ASTRO member and K-pop icon Moonbin died at the age of 25 on April 19. He was reportedly found dead in his Seoul apartment at around 8:10 pm KST (4:40 pm in India) on Wednesday night, stated a report by Yonhap News TV. Moonbin’s agency Fantagio also confirmed the news of his death in a statement posted in Korean.

An excerpt of it, when loosely translated to English, read: “On April 19, ASTRO member Moon Bin suddenly left us and became a star in the sky. It is incomparable to the sorrow of the bereaved families who left their beloved sons and brothers, but all ASTRO members, Fantagio colleagues, and executives and employees are deeply mourning the deceased in such great sadness and shock.” The agency has also requested fans “to please refrain from speculative or malicious reports.”

Born Moon Bin, the K-pop icon adopted the stage name Moonbin after he ventured into showbiz. He was not just a singer but also an actor, a songwriter, and a model. Moonbin was the heart of the Korean boy band ASTRO, being the lead vocalist and the main dancer of the group. He was born on January 26 in 1998 in Cheongju, Chungbuk Province.

Moonbin reportedly graduated from the Hanlim Multi Art School, where he was learning Practical Music. His first project in showbiz was as a child model in 2004. In just two years, he signed his first music video for TVXQ’s Balloons, in which he featured as the younger version of singer U-Know Yunho. In 2009, Moonbin made his acting debut as a child artiste in the series Boys Over Flowers.

Moonbin joined the six-member boy group of ASTRO in 2016. Three years later, the singer signed his first show as the lead actor – he played Jung Oh Je in JTBC drama Moments At Eighteen. However, he had to take a short break from the band in November 2019 due to health issues. In just a year, he returned to his band. He returned in 2020, and appeared on the Korean music show Show Champion as a judge, alongside his band members.

2020 was quite busy for Moonbin. He was cast as the lead actor for the web series The Mermaid Prince, in the second season of which he reprised his role. He was also seen on the cooking program Food Avengers.

Moonbin and his fellow band member Sanha released their debut extended play In-Out in September 2020. It was made under ASTRO’s first sub-unit Moonbin & Sanha. Moonbin is also credited for writing the impressive lyrics of ASTRO’s Only & Only, as well as Footprint songs.

Last year, at Seoul Webfest Film Festival, he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in Find Me If You Can. Moonbin is survived by his parents and his younger sister Moon Sua, who is also a singer in the girl group Billlie.

SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers from “Wisconsin,” the April 19 episode of FXX’s “Dave,” now streaming on Hulu.

Breaking up is never easy, but on television it’s especially difficult — and moreso if audiences fall in love with both parties involved. In Season 1 of FXX’s “Dave,” the relationship between aspiring rapper Lil Dicky (Dave Burd) and his kindergarten teacher girlfriend Ally (Taylor Misiak) offered an essential window not just into who the series’ title character is, but why viewers should love him despite his often deeply narcissistic worldview. After Dave’s failed overture to reconcile with her in Season 2, Ally joins him in Season 3 to capitalize on his “Looking For Love Tour” by embracing her “single girl era” and finding love for herself — if she’s ready for it.

Ahead of episode four, Ally’s return to the show, Misiak spoke to Variety about the relationship her character has with Dave now that they’re both seeking romances with other people. As she discussed the hook-up that brought her back into Dave’s orbit, she also examined how her character serves as a two-way mirror — not just reflecting on the choices that he makes, but some of Ally’s as well.

Traditionally when two people break up, they go separate ways and they don’t see each other. What were your concerns or your goals when Ally was brought back for Season 3?

I always had this duality, as a person and an actor, of wanting to be in every minute of the show possible because I thank every star every day that I’m even a small part of it. But then also, this other side of me that was like, I hope that we continue to make really smart decisions that really justify why Ally is there and doesn’t feel forced, because I think the show is incredibly honest. And before I knew anything about Season 3, I remember thinking, I hope if we go down this path of Dave really dating other people that it becomes this really interesting choice for Ally and we get to see Ally deal with that. The writers were like, why don’t we see Ally dating? Why don’t we see Ally as this full person realizing her own shit instead of just constantly dealing with Dave’s? So that answered both of my prayers in the best way possible.

There’s much more joy and camaraderie in Season 3 than in Season 2. Is Ally a part of the esprit de corps of the raucousness and fun this time or is she more of an observer as everything unfolds?

There’s many, many moments throughout the season that are just about doing what Dave does best, which is just really great comedy. However, I always get these really nice texts from Dave or from the writers about how much they love that I can act. They’re like, “What a little actor we have!” Because they work with so many artists, musicians and comedians, and they’re like, “Taylor is just an actor.” And there are a couple of scenes this season where they really flexed on that where they’re like, what if everyone is having fun, but Ally is having a mental breakdown? That doesn’t seem like I get to be as much involved in the party, but the drama or tension is coming from the expectations in Ally’s life not going as planned and her grappling with that.

You describe yourself as an actor, but this show is so much of an interrogation of hip-hop, of the hype-beast mentality — a lot of things that are outside of acting. How much has that helped you portray Ally more authentically?

I’ve had to learn some things and unlearn some things. I’ve also brought in a lot of skills from having a background in just straight-up acting. I’ve learned so much from getting to work with people who are coming from the music side — there’s just a fun spark that comes from people who come on our show and play themselves. They’re like, you’re going to do this scene with Kourtney Kardashian.

Given how much of this is driven by the real Dave’s relationships, what conversations did you have about how comfortable Ally and Dave can honestly be with one another as they transition into a friendship?

We’ve always talked about Ally being a vehicle for the audience to have permission to love Dave at some of his most unlovable moments. He’s a deeply flawed character — I think it’s part of what makes the show so interesting. And this real heart that Ally brings, we have to figure out a way to keep it in the universe of the show without always making it this will-they-won’t-they. While I agree with you it’s uncommon that exes have this sort of friendship, Dave has an uncommon life and uncommon relationships and is going to lean into the unexpected. Ally has this undeniable love for him, and he does for her, and I think that they anchor each other in different ways. Ally is one of the only characters that doesn’t benefit directly from Dave’s success, and their relationship should be really complicated. But in a way, it’s sometimes less complicated than his relationship with the rest of the ensemble because she does genuinely want happiness for him.

Is the uncertainty of her current relationship more painful than the seeming certainty of her past relationship with Dave?

I think the whole episode plays with expectations and hopes. We see Ally in Season 2 really sorting out her relationship with Dave, which is this huge category of her life. She still has this career. She is a successful gal. We’re looking at this person who is like, “This is going to be my single girl era, and then I’m going to meet the love of my life.” And in that way, she’s also really similar to Dave — they joke about Dave’s “Looking for Love Tour,” but Ally’s on a looking for love tour. She just doesn’t call it that, and thinks that she’s more grounded and realistic. But in reality, her expectations are just as off as Dave’s. Not only does she deeply not have her shit together, but she’s disappointed that she thought she did.

This whole episode feels like a bit of a dialectic between Dave’s experiences and Ally’s, where he’s not seeking the romantic situation that he ends up in, and she’s actively seeking one and it goes wrong. How was the episode written on the page to indicate that she’s gotten the experience that she said she wants, but realizes that it isn’t?

We played that confrontation scene at the end a handful of ways. And it does come down to the injustice of this moment that there is a complete lack of recognition of her being honest. He is so not getting it. He just sort of exemplifies everything that’s wrong with every guy that she’s dated and that all of her friends are dating — no, actually it’s not about you all the time. Not everybody wants to be your girlfriend all the time, and you’re not listening. I am giving you the gift of being open and honest, and instead, you are going to get defensive? So it got to this place where he became this symbol of her anger at the whole dating process. We talked about her getting a little frustrated and disappointed in herself that she boiled down herself to this, “I’m going to have a hot girl moment. I am going to go out and I’m going to be fuckboy for once,” and realize that’s not the situation she should have put herself in and she needs to be a better friend to herself in those moments. Like, how can you expect this sort of behavior from a person when you’re playing a character?

It also feels like a mirror of the “Harrison Ave” episode, where Dave goes back to this person who was his first true love and it ends up not only blowing up, but also teaching him something about himself.

We’re seeing Dave be like, I know I want a relationship. And then Ally’s like, what I should do right now is get a hook-up — and she can’t even form that sentence grammatically right! She’s disappointed and frustrated in herself that it is not what she wanted, and then that this guy also ends up being just a total douche, which she should have known. It is a lot of that revisiting it going, I’m feeling kind of lost because if the answer is I am not a casual sex girl and I do want intimacy and I’m ready for love as well… and Dave just has this dream girl fall into his lap? Ally just gets her feelings crushed by this douche who’s not as good as her, but she doesn’t know that.

At the end of the episode, GaTa comes in with a bunch of groupies for Dave to choose from. Is Ally still in the midst of her failed hot girl moment? Or when she hears this, is she thinking she’s not quite ready to move on?

My first instinct as Taylor was that it’s kind of wild that Ally goes to visit him on tour and then skips his show. That seems kind of crazy. I’m the girl who will never be late to an event. That seems so rude and Ally’s so nice. And then I was reading it and I’m like, oh, she’s not ready to admit that she might not be in a place to be able to see Dave’s show. This is a girl who is so supportive of him. I think there is so much she is okay with, but I think it leads to her throwing herself into this moment with this guy and not wanting to face that she might not be so ready to see Dave in this light.

So, by the time they have the conversation in the pool… there’s a lot that comes with that Ally’s not ready to deal with, but I know now it’s what I want. I’m talking to this guy who I, in so many ways, am still in love with, and he’s going to go have anonymous sex wearing a Scroguard with some groupie. By that time, I think she’s realized that she’s more sensitive to it than she might have thought. That just speaks to the real love and connection that they do have — that if you’re going to choose to be friends, stuff like that is going to come up.

To be honest with you, it was hard to not laugh at GaTa every time he came in because he said a new line every time — and man, they were so funny every time. I was like, “GaTa, I’m supposed to be sad!”

I think a strength of the show is that it is not judging her choice to be a hot girl. Her own internal journey is not creating a double standard between Dave’s tour life and her life now that she’s on the tour with him.

From the first draft, which was written by Emma Wisdom — she’s so great, probably no one knows our show better — we’ve used Ally as this way a lens for the audience to see his relationship with Ally and have this love with Ally that is so pure and good. We’re now just using her in this different way where we’re seeing that Dave acts like he is not a misogynist, and Dave acts like he puts women on a pedestal, nobody could treat women better, but in reality, there’s a lot of problems with the expectations that he has with women that he’s meeting on tour. The reality of dating for women is so much harsher than he thinks.

We’re not always going to find ways for Ally and Dave to be in the same room together, especially in this time right after their breakup. The dream is that they arrived to this place where maybe they’re back together or maybe they’re not, but we’re in the same room without it always being about the breakup.

    Watch and Analyze Documentaries: Immerse

“If I’m going be gay in a movie, that would be a good guy to be gay with,” Maron said of HBO’s 2019 film “Bad Education.”

Marc Maron wanted “Bad Education” to be more queer.

The 2019 Emmy-winning TV movie based on a true story starred Hugh Jackman as corrupt school district superintendent Frank Tassone who embezzled millions of dollars in school funds. Frank’s husband Tom was played by Stephen Spinella, while Rafael Casal portrayed his boyfriend Kyle, whose Las Vegas lifestyle was in part funded by the stolen money.

Comedian Maron revealed he auditioned to play the role of Kyle but ultimately turned it down over a lack of “gayness.”

“I thought I was auditioning for the role you had,” Maron told guest Ray Romano during his “WTF” podcast. “I just didn’t want to do it. I read the script and I said I don’t want to do it. It was for Hugh Jackman’s boyfriend. He’s got nothing in there.”

Maron added, “I said, ‘If I’m going be gay in a movie, [Jackman] would be a good guy to be gay with, but there didn’t seem to be much to the role other than that.’ I said, ‘I’ll wait to be gay when there’s more gayness.’”

Romano played school board president and real estate broker Bob Spicer in the film. He agreed that the role of Kyle “didn’t have a lot of screentime.”

Maron replied, “I like that movie. I didn’t hear much about it,” to which Romano revealed, “I think originally it was supposed to be released in theaters.”

The real-life Frank criticized part of his portrayal in the HBO movie, saying on “The Coach Mike Podcast” in 2020 that there was an incorrect implication that he was trying to hide his sexuality and that he regretted his marriage to a woman.

“There was a lot of implication, or at least I felt, that I didn’t have a wonderful marriage or didn’t love her so very much, which I did,” Tassone said at the time. “I almost felt it was disrespectful to her, and I loved her very much.”

He continued of his sexuality depicted, “That upset me as well, because I’m not ashamed of being a gay man, and again, they made it seem somewhat sordid. That bothered me and upset me when the detective questioned [husband] Steven, and he implied that Steven didn’t even know I was married. That was not the case. And I don’t understand why they had to bring my sexuality into the film.”
