John Iacovelli, the Emmy-winning prolific scenic designer for stage and screen, whose ability to balance poetics with pragmatism made him a beloved and invaluable collaborator for Los Angeles theater artists for many decades, died Friday after a long battle with cancer, his family told The Times. He was 64.

His range was limitless, moving effortlessly on stage from lavish musical spectacle to Beckettian minimalism, on screen from the space opera of “Babylon 5” to the instantly recognizable reality of “Lincoln Heights.” Theater was his true love and the dream factory Iacovelli operated seemed to run around the clock, but precision was never sacrificed by speed of production.

“John worked scenic miracles on Los Angeles stages throughout his long and distinguished career,” said Times theater critic Charles McNulty. “His fertile imagination and practical know-how could endow any work from the repertoire with just the right amount of whimsy, lyricism and realism.”

“His death represents an incalculable loss for L.A.’s theater community,” McNulty added. “He was a pillar of the scene here, a beloved and trusted counselor to fellow artists, an amiably enlightening interlocutor with critics and an impish presence who embodied theater’s Dionysian spirit.”

Iacovelli worked with budgets big, medium and small, conjuring from the resources at hand the scenic magic required to transport an audience to the aesthetic world of the play or musical. But he was, first and foremost, a practical man of the theater.

As he told the Times’ Mary McNamara in 2020, “In the end, the set is there to serve the actors. … It is a machine for action.”

In a career spanning more than 40 years, Iacovelli designed sets for at least 300 stage productions: for national tours, internationally, on Broadway, large regional theaters and every cramped, dusty 99-seat houses in and around L.A. He moved seamlessly between the stage and Hollywood, working on films including “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” and “Ruby in Paradise,” and TV series including “Babylon 5,” “Resurrection Blvd.” and “Ed.” He earned an Emmy for the stage production of “Peter Pan” he had designed, which played on A&E.

Awards didn’t slow him down a bit: even after winning the 2018 United States Institute of Theatre Technology‘s distinguished achievement award in scene design & technology, he continued working on a seemingly impossible number of projects simultaneously — up to 18 shows a year. “People think I say yes to everything,” he said in a recent podcast. “They don’t know about the shows I turn down.”

All the while he was teaching full-time at UC Davis, where he had developed the design curriculum of the MFA program. “All of my kids are working,” he said of his many students there over the years.

“John was the most generous theater practitioner I ever knew. And I’ve known him for 40 years,” said director Eli Simon, chancellor’s professor of drama at UC Irvine. “He was in a constant state of creativity and sharing. We were at a show and there were a couple of young scenic designers at the show. [At intermission] he came up to them and said, ‘Okay, after the show, I want you to tell me five things that worked about the scenic design and five things that didn’t. I know what they are, but I’m not going to tell you right now.’ That was John in a nutshell. He was humble and generous and a teacher at heart.”

He retired from teaching in 2019. A diagnosis of lymphoma wasn’t part of his plans, but even that failed to slow him down; he worked without breaking stride throughout his treatment and into his remission. When he learned this year that his cancer had returned, he was deep in the design process for La Mirada Theatre’s “Did You See What Walter Paisley Did Today?”

But if Iacovelli was the platonic ideal of designers in many ways, it must be said that his sets didn’t politely fade into the woodwork: They stood out as exemplars of the form even in the L.A. theater community, which boasts many brilliant set designers (all Iacovelli’s friends).

Playwright Justin Tanner recalled the way Iacovelli’s work transformed a space: “He managed a level of realism that made you forget,” Tanner said, noting he first worked with Iacovelli in 2018 on his play “El Niño” at Rogue Machine. “If you didn’t look at the audience, you felt like you were in a real environment … just the detailing and his artistic eye … it was a combination of fabulous and naturalist.”

Critics took note of the majesty of his set for the 2012 play “The Heiress” at the Pasadena Playhouse. Iacovelli had visited the preserved mansions of New York’s Washington Square Park for inspiration, and many had trouble imagining that any of them could be as beautiful as what he created. Particularly the serene, ethereal blue of the walls, which served as a particularly effective backdrop for the brutal emotional experience that followed.

Sheldon Epps, the former artistic director of the Pasadena Playhouse, who first worked with Iacovelli in 1999 on “The Importance of Being Earnest,” remembered Iacovelli as singular in a profession known for individuality.

“I know few people who’ve worked in the theater as long as John did who remained passionate about the art form. So constantly joyous about the act of creating — both his own work and celebrating other people’s work,” Epps said.

Theater enthusiasts recalled delighting in spotting Iacovelli’s work in theaters large and small all over Los Angeles: the way two unremarkable walls in DOMA Theatre’s revival of “Young Frankenstein” opened up to reveal a gloriously ornate mad-scientist laboratory. A foreshortened dining room visible through a glass door at Antaeus Theatre Company’s production of “The Little Foxes” looked like a purely visual component until somehow, late in the play, the entire cast went in and sat around the table.

There was never a gimmick or “tell” that screamed “Iacovelli.” What tipped people off was an authenticity in the details, some ineffable harmony between the actors and their milieu. Iacovelli’s living spaces always looked liveable. “You could move in,” his close friend, actor Alan Mandell, said of his set for “Dance of Death.”

“There are any number of people who owe him a debt of gratitude for the scenic work he did,” Mandell said. “He spoke his mind, clearly and forcefully about the work that he was doing and what he felt you should be doing right or wrong. In a field where disappointment is rampant, he was able to convey his appreciation for your attempt to do something significant. I shall miss him terribly.”

Iacovelli often said he didn’t consider himself an artist. His father, he maintained, was the “real” artist in the family. His father and mother, a government worker, settled in Reno, Nev.. When Iacovelli was 7 or 8, his father built him a puppet theater, to which he often attributed his enduring fascination with scenic design. Iacovelli spent his childhood forming theater troupes with friends; when it was time for college, he applied for and earned a scholarship in scenic design at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. There, he recalled, he was taught that film and TV was “a nasty business.” But when he entered the master’s program at New York University (renamed the Tisch School of the Arts), he was startled and then excited by its all-embracing attitude toward the screen as well as the stage.

Classmate-turned-production-designer Larry Fulton (“The Sixth Sense,” “Unbreakable”) persuaded Iacovelli to leave New York for L.A., where his career quickly caught fire and he never looked back.

Throughout his life, Iacovelli remained devoted to learning as much as he could about his chosen art form.

“I never knew him to travel anywhere without coming [back] with a new load of books,” Epp said. “To the point where he actually had to extend his home so he could store his art collection and all of his theatrical memorabilia. Going to his house was like going to a theatrical library.”

Iacovelli is survived by sisters Violet Iacovelli, Angaela Iacovelli, Victoria Williams and Dariel Wines; brother Cameron Iacovelli; nephews Ian Van Rensselaer, Skylar Van Rensselaer, David Iacovelli and Spencer Williams; and nieces Melanie Lewis, Sylvia Micheli and Rochelle Iacovelli.

The Batman – Part II fan trailer imagines Barry Keoghan’s Joker as the main villain in Robert Pattinson’s sequel. As James Gunn is building his DC Universe, Matt Reeves is continuing The Batman franchise. After the successful 2022 installment, The Batman – Part II is on its way with Pattinson back as the DC icon. While The Riddler was the main antagonist, Joker also made his debut in the Reeves universe.

While he only had two scenes, Keoghan’s Joker left a major impression on audiences. In Screen Culture‘s The Batman – Part II fan trailer, the Clown Prince of Crime becomes the central foe.

The Batman – Part II fan trailer takes some obvious inspiration from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. The trailer also incorporates some footage of Batman from the Titans season 1 finale.

Should Joker Be The Villain For The Batman 2?

According to reports, one of the villains in The Batman – Part II is supposedly going to be Clayface. However, Reeves hasn’t made any definitive plans yet for where Keoghan’s Joker will appear next. The bigger question is whether or not Joker should even be the main baddie in the next film. Having Joker factored into The Batman – Part II would make it feel too similar to The Dark Knight.

It’s also worth noting the sequel would be coming out only a year after Joker: Folie à Deux. Joker has been featured more than any other Batman villain, whether it be in live-action or animation. With all the Batman foes that have yet to get the same spotlight, the sequel should save Joker for later. Instead, Joker could be utilized differently in Reeves’ universe, perhaps through an HBO Max spinoff.

Since the Penguin is getting his own show, HBO Max could do a limited-event Joker series focused on his origin. That would be far more intriguing than him being The Batman – Part II’s main antagonist. Hopefully, as The Batman – Part II starts principal photography this year, more details will emerge soon enough.

The Batman - Part II fan trailer

Not even a few weeks out until the release of Honkai: Star Rail and the game has already reached over 10,000,000 Preregistrations from players who are excited to play this new game. I don’t think even Hoyoverse was prepared to see just what kind of reception this game would get, but it looks like all their efforts from the past year have paid off!

Honkai: Star Rail has Reached 10,000,000 Preregistrations so Can We Get More Rewards? Pretty Please?

Originally back at the beginning of the year, Hoyoverse raised 5,000,000 pregristrations as the highest tier that players would have to overcome to get the best rewards. At the time, we all thought that this was going to be a fairly hard hurdle to overcome, but in the span of less than a few weeks, the player base proved to be determined to get as much free stuff as possible, achieving that high tier and smacking it to the ground.

However, that didn’t prove to be good enough for those following Hoyoverse. Regardless of whether you came from Honkai Impact, Genshin Impact, or some other overworld anime waifu/husbando game, Honkai: Star Rail has breached some high numbers when it comes to gaining a massive following. All just checking out Twitter for the smallest smidgens of updates and hitting that goal of 5 million preregisters within weeks.

Because low and behold, here we are counting down the days to April 26th and what do we have? News that Honkai: Star Rail surpassed 10,000,000 players hungry for the game’s release. Last month, Hoyoverse mentioned that they had reached 8,000,000 pregisters but the players just couldn’t be halted. Did Hoyoverse just shortcut themselves, thinking that 5,000,000 would be enough and they could coast on that? And why did players continue even though all the rewards were gained?

Can we expect to see more awards come from Hoyoverse due to their ravenous fanbase? They’ve been quite stingy in the past with Genshin Impact Anniversary Rewards, and more lenient with Honkai Impact, and now that they are preparing their freshest product from the oven, will they cater to the player’s devotion?

Quite frankly, we just don’t know yet. It would be well-deserved after seeing Honkai: Star Rail be the most seen and recognized game of this year. Could we gain some more Star Rail Passes to pull for characters? Will they hand out another free character? Might it even possibly be a five-star? While I am remaining realistic in my standards, I do believe that more wishes and another four-star should be gifted out to players when they log in on April 26th.

I can’t wait to see what shenanigans will arise once everyone logs into Honkai: Star Rail on April 26th. If there is any further news about what gifts may be even hinted at from Hoyoverse, we’ll be sure to share the exciting news!

There’s not much sex in the Tarantino filmography.

Quentin Tarantino is renowned for his unique and controversial style of filmmaking, known for his gritty violence, witty dialogue, and eclectic references. However, there’s one aspect of human experience that seems to be notably absent from his films: sex.

Despite the presence of other taboo themes, Tarantino’s films often lack explicit depictions of sexual intimacy, leaving audiences to wonder why this aspect of human connection is seemingly overlooked in his cinematic universe.

‘Pulp Fiction’Credit: Miramax Films

The filmmaker talked about the lack of nudity and sex in his movies while speaking to reporter Diari ARA. He said, “It’s true, sex is not part of my vision of cinema,”

Tarantino elaborated, saying, “And the truth is that, in real life, it’s a pain to shoot sex scenes, everyone is very tense. And if it was already a bit problematic to do it before, now it is even more so. If there had ever been a sex scene that was essential to the story, I would have, but so far it hasn’t been necessary.”

This is honestly very interesting coming from a guy who seems to have nothing off-limits in his storytelling.

I think before everyone overreacts, Tarantino means that in his films, there hasn’t been a time where sex has advanced the plot. So, this is not a rule across all films that he’s set.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

Cox might find Trump every bit as evil as Logan Roy, but he thinks his “Succession” character is more dramaturgically interesting.

Playing former President Donald Trump isn’t so “dramaturgically” interesting to Brian Cox.

Following last Sunday’s jaw-dropping “Succession” twist, Cox spent much of the week taking a media victory lap to discuss his five-year run playing media mogul and terrible parent Logan Roy. While he took every opportunity to praise Jesse Armstrong’s writing and explain the lengths he went to keep the twist a secret, the outspoken actor also found time to take a few shots at Trump.

In an interview with Deadline, Cox voiced his thoughts about the similarities between Roy and Trump. While “Succession” proved that Cox can play an aging right-wing demagogue as well as anyone, he said that he doesn’t find Trump nearly as interesting as Roy. The Scottish actor explained why he wouldn’t ever be interested in playing Trump if the opportunity presented itself.

“You know, somebody said, would you ever want to play Donald Trump,” Cox recalled. “And I said, well, no. Because I think it’s such a bad script, the Donald Trump script. But then I look at Donald Trump, and I think, God, he’s so lost. He’s just a lost individual, and he’s so full of shit, and the reason he’s full of shit is that he’s an abused child. He’s really an abused child, Donald Trump. A tragic figure.”

But while Cox won’t be playing the indicted former president any time soon, he explained that his enthusiasm for playing characters that he finds morally and politically abhorrent hasn’t diminished.

“Even though a lot of these very right-wing individuals are repellant, ironically, from the actor’s point of view, when the actor gets into the skin of these guys, you begin to understand where they’re coming from,” he said.

Passing on the hypothetical opportunity to play Trump shouldn’t set Cox’s career back too much, as he has a busy schedule of projects lined up now that his “Succession” commitments are over. He’s planning to return to the London stage later this year in a West End revival of Eugene O’Neil’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” and is set to make his feature directorial debut on the upcoming Scottish drama “Glenrothan.”

In the first season of Dark Winds — AMC’s Western noir thriller that follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley — the pandemic made it impossible to shoot on an actual reservation.

Fortunately, that changed in Season 2, which meant that the cast and crew could not only work on actual Navajo land but also rent an old casino that helped out the local tribe and employed local indigenous people in the production.

“It’s important we get it right,” McClarnon said Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event. “It’s not a documentary. We do our best to get it right, but we always miss something. It’s still a fictional TV show.”

Part of the thrill of starring and exec producing the drama is that McClarnon gets to work alongside fellow producers George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford. The series is created by Graham Roland and based on Tony Hillerman’s popular Leaphorn & Chee book series.

“People enjoy the show,” McClarnon said. “I just want people to be entertained. It’s fantastic we are finally getting our own voice, Native peoples. I hope that Dark Winds opens up that door a little bit more.”

It’s the age-old fashion dilemma: what to wear when your husband is performing at Royal Albert Hall? For Sophie Turner, who turned out to support the Jonas Brothers at their London gig on April 14, the answer came in the form of a vintage floral jumpsuit.

The Game of Thrones alum has always been a fan of a one-piece–she famously tied the knot with Joe Jonas in Las Vegas wearing a silky Bevza jumpsuit and gold Loeffler Randall heels–but her look on Friday night felt more Laurel Canyon circa 1966 than Sin City circa 2017.

“You have to coordinate a little!” Turner previously told Vogue of dressing as a couple. “Be that colours or a nod to the accessories.”

Sophie Turner’s status as an ambassador for Louis Vuitton – and welcome willingness to take risks on the red carpet – have seen her become one of Hollywood’s more directional dressers over the last few years. Take the bejeweled lace gown she wore to this year’s BAFTAs or the iridescent caped dress she walked the red carpet in before Vanity Fair’s Oscars Party. “[Nicolas Ghesquière] surprises me every season with incredible collections – it’s always so different and daring,” Turner previously told Vogue. “Breathtaking tailoring, with a powerful structure and a bright pop of color.” Long may their collab continue.

Less than a year after Spotify acquired Heardle, the audio streamer is mothballing the music game.

“Heardle is going away on May 5th,” a message on the service’s website says. “Thanks for playing Heardle, but unfortunately we have to say goodbye.” In the note to Heardle users, Spotify said that if they have statistics they would like to save, “make sure you go to your stats and take a screenshot by May 4th.”

When Spotify announced its deal to buy Heardle in July 2022, the company touted it as “a tool for musical discovery,” saying that playing the game “might just help you to rediscover old tracks you may have thought you’d forgotten, discover amazing new artists, or finally put a title to that wordless melody you’ve had caught in your head forever.”

Heardle launched in February 2022, based on the format pioneered by word-guessing game Wordle, which was bought by the New York Times for more than $1 million. In Heardle, players get six tries to to correctly identify a song as quickly as possible based on its opening notes.

Given the decision to wind down Heardle, it would appear that the game did not produce the kind of lift in overall listening and engagement that Spotify had been hoping to see. “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Heardle as we focus our efforts on other features for music discovery,” a Spotify spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The identity of Heardle’s creator has been kept secret. Prior to Spotify’s acquisition of the game, Variety interviewed the “London-based web and app designer” who launched Heardle but did not identify them, citing their wish to remain anonymous.

Spotify hadn’t disclosed what it paid for Heardle. In recent months has been looking at cutting operating costs. In January, Spotify said it was laying off 6% of its employees and announced a senior-executive reorg that included the exit of Dawn Ostroff, chief content and advertising business officer.

Robin Thede is showing no signs of slowing down the rich expansion of the magical reality found in “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”

Picking up from the Season 3 finale, which revealed that Dr. Haddassah had been secretly mind-controlling the women, Season 4 embraces the twist to “constantly reinvent” reality as the comedian and show star and creator introduces characters from prior seasons to one another and disparate storylines intertwine.

“My life and my world are constantly reinventing. It should as we go through life, and so I think allegorically we get to play with that,” Thede told TheWrap ahead of the fourth installment’s April 14 premiere. “What is this world where Dr. Haddassah would be elected president? It’s obviously not the world we live in, but in a parallel universe where all these characters get to play, and where these women get to inhabit these characters. We start to meet the women behind the characters and this mystery starts to unfold.”

While this element enriches the viewing experience for loyal fans as recurring segments — cue Black Lady Courtroom — and characters like Coral Reefs Gang and Chris, Thede encourages newcomers to tune into the fourth chapter even if they haven’t watched the show before.

“There’s two ways to enjoy the show: 1) at the base level, just watching the sketches and enjoying and laughing … and that’s a lot of people take away,” Thede said. “The second level is with rewatches and with connecting sketches from years past and connecting characters and following their storylines… The real reward is, if you have been watching since Season 1, then you’re gonna get all those Easter eggs and understand the continuing storylines.”

With three seasons of the HBO series under her belt, Thede also continues to expand her writers’ room with new and different voices, noting that this season’s broader format makes the installment accessible to a wide variety of viewers.

“We talk about an all-Black women writers’ room, but what that means is that we get to really celebrate the diversity amongst a group that may seem the same, but it’s not,” Thede said. “We’ve got Black women from all sorts of different walks of life and different experiences that bring so many different types of comedy to the table.”

Keep reading to find out which characters fans vied to be brought back and how Thede constructed the music-filled fourth season of “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”

Music has always been an integral part of the show. Can you talk about crafting the music video sketches and how that differs from solely written dialogue?

I think we approach it with the same kind of energy, which is that we want as many jokes as possible in as rapid succession as possible. We have a big musical opening sketch after the cold open this season, which was really fun, because we got to feature all the new cast members with the OGs. So that was a really fun introduction; I think it’s just set the tone for them.

Of course, we have a new opening song [and] credits every year, and I think people are finally getting used to that. The first time we changed the opening credits, they were like, “what, where are the puppets?” We have different paths and it’s a sketch in and of itself, we don’t treat it as something that’s an afterthought. We are very intentional about everything on this show … Black culture is so inextricably linked to music. We use that to create comedic moments that you may not even realize why the music is making you laugh. But we try to use it as ironically — or not ironically — as possible to illicit another level of laughs.

What feedback have you heard from viewers? What do they want to see more of?

I haven’t played Chris in two seasons — people have been hounding me about that — so he is back and better than ever, with a better hairline than ever. They’re also really excited about the new cast members, and they’ve each got their own fan bases, which I love. So I know they’re gonna have a really good time seeing them. Black lady courtroom, oh, my gosh, we didn’t do it last season for the first time, and people were livid. So, it is back, honey … Also the Coral Reefs Gang — we haven’t seen them in two seasons — so Gabrielle Dennis is back and she has a rival, which I’m really excited is Tracee Ellis Ross, who just crushes it. We only write when we know we have a story to tell, and so that’s why some seasons some of the characters don’t come back.

They asked about guest stars — they want to see all their faves on the show. I’m really excited about folks like Debra Wilson and Jackée Harry, who makes a triumphant return to the show, but Debra we had never had on before and I’m really excited to have her and pay homage to these women who paved the way for us to do this.

As we are still slowly going out of the pandemic, what was it like shooting this season with hopefully a bit less restrictions?

[For] Season 2, everybody was double-masked and testing eight times a day, and it was just scary, because it was no vaccine. And then Season 3 people were vaccinated; it was feeling a little better. And then [for] Season 4, now there’s no restrictions on, like, kids or animals or crowds, so we really went for it, and we were able to create pretty much without restriction. Our crew is still unmask, and we still test everyday, but that was just to make sure everyone had peace of mind and was safe and healthy. I think that we’re kind of back to definitely feeling like production normalcy for the most part.

Can you talk about the choice to remain at a six episode-season for Season 4?

Oh, that doesn’t have anything to do with me. We are happy to get the six we get — it still takes the better part of a year to make the show because we’re making short films, so new locations, new characters … Imagine your favorite comedy show having to reinvent itself everyday — it’s a big task and it’s a dense show. I know six is never enough. And I love that, right? I love that we keep people wanting more.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

The sixth edition of Canneseries, the international festival for premium series, kicked off Friday with the world premiere of the first episode of Apple TV+’s sci-fi show “Silo.” Lead actor and executive producer Rebecca Ferguson, director and executive producer Morten Tyldum, and screenwriter and executive producer Graham Yost walked the pink carpet at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, and spoke about the show on stage, before attending a party at an exclusive beach-side venue.

It was standing room only in the 2,300-seat Louis Lumiere auditorium, where the dress code was described as “creative chic,” as the evening got underway with opening remarks by the mayor of Cannes, David Lisnard, Canneseries president, Fleur Pellerin, and “Fauda” actor and co-creator Lior Raz, who is the president of the main jury. The ceremony, hosted with aplomb by French comedy actor and writer Camille Chamoux, aired on pay TV service Canal+.

On the pink carpet, before the ceremony started, Tyldum had been asked what it was like seeing “Silo,” which will stream on Apple TV+ from May 5, projected in the Palais during the tech check on Thursday. “There’s nothing like seeing your work on a big screen,” he said. “It looks great. It sounds great, and we are very proud of it. We can’t wait to show it because it is a big, cinematic, intense, fun, thrilling show.”

Later, on stage, Ferguson, Tyldum and Yost were asked how it felt to be at the show’s world premiere “in this legendary theater.” Yost responded: “It felt great until we saw how many people are here.” Ferguson added: “It’s just so uncomfortable all of this.”

Asked about the “ambience on the set” of the show, which is now shooting its second season, Ferguson said: “For me, I was excited to get back to television because of everything that is being made. You know, the conversation on the set of films is always: Who is going into [television]? Who is making it? … the filmmakers and … so for me to be teamed up with these two, with Apple+, it feels phenomenal. I don’t see myself as a producer. I’m a novice, learning from people who know. But it’s a family, it’s phenomenal. That’s why this feels so weird because TV feels so safe, so it’s a juxtaposition, and so wonderful.”

Yost, who wrote the screenplay based on a trilogy of novels by Hugh Howey, was asked how he had known the story “was going to be such good television.” He said: “I just loved that it was really a big mystery story. The last 10,000 people on Earth live in an underground silo. Who built the silo? When? Why? What happened outside that makes it deathly to go outside? So, that intrigued me as a mystery story. And then there is the main character, Juliette (played by Ferguson), who we only meet briefly in what we are about to see. She is just a great main character for the show.”

Among the other VIP guests on the pink carpet and presented on stage were “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” actor Morfydd Clark, who received the Madame Figaro Rising Star Award, and composer and musician Stewart Copeland, who is on the main jury.

Among the cast and crew on “Rings of Power” who Clark thanked in her acceptance speech, she emphasized the contribution of her co-star Charlie Vickers, who “encouraged me, championed me, and supported me, and I am so grateful that I got to do this with him.” She explained that she had brought with her to the ceremony Kate Staddon, her agent, and her sister, Siwan, both of whom had played a major role in her career. She said that Staddon “has been with me since drama school […] and I owe her my entire career.” Referring to her sister, she said: “Every creative decision I make is to do with her, and I was so lucky that we were both raised by parents who sang to us and read to us and made us love stories.”

In a video message from her limo, actor and producer Sarah Michelle Gellar, who will receive the Canal+ Icon Award at the closing ceremony, thanked the festival and Canal+ for the award. “I don’t feel worthy but I am incredibly honored,” she said.

The post-screening celebration took place at Palais Stéphanie Beach on the Croisette, where Ferguson, Tyldum, Yost and the by-invitation-only guests were serenaded by Paris DJ and R&B enthusiast Naomi Clément.

SPOILER ALERT: This post discusses gargantuan plot developments in “Connor’s Wedding,” Season 4, Episode 3 of “Succession,” now streaming on HBO Max.

Jeremy Strong is speaking out for the first time about last week’s shocking “Succession” death. The star, who plays Kendall Roy on the HBO series, was front and center in the episode “Connor’s Wedding,” written by “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong, which featured the demise of family patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox).

“It went through my heart, not in my mind,” Strong told Variety. “What I mean is it went it didn’t go through my mind as much as I found it a heartbreaking thing to read and to experience when we were making it.”

Strong said he was indeed shocked, just like “Succession” fans, by “the suddenness of it, the banality of it the ordinariness of the way these things play out, the inability in a way to have the moment be what you want it to be. The suddenness of these things, and the that irrevocability of these kinds of things happening. The fact of of death, the fact of them, and now we have to contend with that grief and loss in the middle of, you know, a pit viper fight.”

The episode was directed by executive producer Mark Mylod, and centered on both the boat on which Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) and siblings Kendall, Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) are gathered, and the Waystar Royco plane, where Logan was flying with his executive team to Sweden, in order to try to salvage a deal.

Strong spoke to Variety on Saturday at the ninth annual Breakthrough Prize ceremony. The event, held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, honors “the world’s leading scientists whose work fuels modern day scientific achievement.”

Strong and Cox haven’t necessarily seen eye-to-eye when it comes to acting styles — in particular, Strong’s use of method acting. Cox labeled Strong’s style “fucking annoying” in one interview and later vented his thoughts to Variety: “I’m sorry. All that sort of ‘I think, therefore I feel.’ Just do the job. Don’t identify.”

Read Variety’s interview with Mylod about directing “Connor’s Wedding” here. Full details on how the episode went down here. And how the producers kept the storyline from leaking here.

“Succession” Season 4 airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

SPOILER ALERT: This post discusses gargantuan plot developments

James Gunn has hit the ground running full tilt at DC Studios since becoming both co-CEO and co-chair alongside Peter Safran, announcing an ambitiously stocked lineup of projects just to start things off in his new DCU. While many of them have since been scheduled and thoroughly covered, per a report from CBR, there are apparently two more projects that Gunn himself admitted have yet to be revealed. Even more compelling is his hint that one of those two projects will be his absolute favorite of the bunch.

Gunn reportedly revealed this new update at a recent press conference where he further discussed all of the studio’s upcoming plans. However, when it came to mentioning his so-called personal “favorite” project, Gunn stressed that he couldn’t even drop a hint about the idea of it. Essentially if he did, the smartest sleuths of the DC fanbase would quickly figure out what it is.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

“There’s one thing I know is my favorite, one of my favorite projects of all of this. And it’s just so totally unique that the idea itself is giving away too much when it may not come out for two or three years. Also, with some other things, it’s kind of a choice. We have a director working on a really fantastic other project that may take him a little more time than some other people.”

So, with at least one project being kept under strict lock and key for now, Gunn continues to cleverly keep fans on their toes about how the remainder of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters will play out.

The Chapter One Timeline So Far

Chapter One of James Gunn’s DC universe is slated to kick off in 2025 with one of the biggest projects of the film portion of the lineup, Superman: Legacy, which will be written by Gunn himself. Following that will be Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which has been confirmed to feature Bruce Wayne’s son Damian, aka Robin. The cohesion of these two films has been leading to early rumors among fans that we could one day possibly get a “Super Sons” movie, based around the sons of Batman and Superman taking up the mantle for their respective fathers. Regardless, next in line will be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, followed by The Authority and then Swamp Thing. All of these films so far are confirmed.

As for the TV series half of the lineup, we will see an all-new Green Lantern series, appropriately titled Lanterns, that fans can only hope will finally break the perpetual jinx over the character and ease Ryan Reynold’s conscience. After that will be the animated series Creature Commandos, which will see the return of eccentric character Weasel from The Suicide Squad (2021). Waller will of course see the return of Viola Davis as iron-fisted Amanda Waller. Rounding out the series lineup is Booster Gold and the Wonder Woman prequel titled Paradise Lost.

Whether Gunn’s two mystery projects are films or series or both is still under wraps as well, along with where they’ll fall within this established timeline.

James Gunn has hit the ground running

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot points of “Suzume,” currently playing in theaters.

Makoto Shinkai’s latest anime feature, “Suzume,” hits American theaters this weekend. The film is set in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake that devastated Japan’s Tohoku region, centering on themes of loss and grief.

Shinkai brings in a talking cat and mobile three-legged chair to help tell the story of a young girl, Suzume, who travels across disaster-stricken Japan in hopes to save the country from its devastation. This leads her to the Ever After, a fantastical realm of souls which Suzume first discovers when she finds a mysterious door and walks through it.

Speaking with Variety through a translator, Shinkai discussed building Suzume’s world and the film’s universal message of disaster and hope.

Where did the idea of “Suzume” begin for you?

I’ve been warming up this project since the Great East Tohoku earthquake of 2011. That earthquake completely reshaped Japan as a country and society. It rewrote part of how I viewed the world, and even though I wasn’t a firsthand victim, I felt the disruption to peaceful daily life, and how life as we knew it was suddenly uprooted because of the events surrounding it.

It also changed my movie-making process. I started to think more about how as humans, we can co-exist in a world with disaster and how we can be displaced at any given moment in time, and how to find hope.

The opening scene shows the title character, Suzume, looking for her mother. Why did you want to begin the film this way?

I knew really early on that I wanted that as the beginning of the film, a young Suzume in this fantastical world walking through the Ever After.

To some of the victims of the 2011 quake, it could be interpreted as a cruel scene because when the quake happened, it caused a tsunami that effectively washed away all the towns along the coast and everything was just leveled. People were walking around this mud looking for their loved ones and coming to terms with what happened. Visually, I tried to imagine what that world would look like had there not been any human intervention, and that was, a grassy overgrown field had sprung up – and that’s what we see Suzume walking through.

The story is about loss, the trauma that comes with that and, ultimately, hope. How did you balance those themes in your storytelling?

In the scene at the end when teenage Suzume gives her younger self the chair, there’s a very cathartic moment where she tells herself, “One day you’re going to grow up, you’re going to fall in love with people and you’re going to fall in love with yourself.”

During that moment, the stars in the background are rotating and we transition from night to day. I wanted that to represent time passing, and so the Ever After is a space where all sense exists simultaneously. Symbolically, it’s about the teenage Suzume giving a younger version of herself all the strength that she needs to be able to push through that, and the hope she feels in that moment.

“Suzume” is a story of loss and the grief that she experiences, but to only have that would have resulted in a heavy and dark film. To offset that, She meets Souta, a chair with three legs. Souta becomes her sidekick and is this comical character.

What was the idea behind Souta being three-legged?

The idea was that the leg was presumably washed away in the tsunami. Suzume ends up finding it, and that, to me, was a metaphor for Suzume’s loss. We see them go on this journey, and despite whatever loss they’re going through, they’re still able to go on this adventure in Japan to ultimately, live a fulfilling life and overcome whatever they’re battling internally.

On that journey, we see landmarks such as Mount Fuji, but also ruins of destruction. What was behind that juxtaposition?

I wanted to represent and depict Japan and its current state. That includes all the beautiful sights, and the maybe not so beautiful elements. Suzume travels through these different ruins, which, to me, is almost a metaphor for the wounds or scars of the country itself, some of which are a result of natural disasters and some of just human behavior and population decline.

In a new interview released the same day, Cabello revealed that their breakup was the result of shifting priorities. “My priorities have fluctuated and my focus has changed throughout my life,” Cabello told Zane Lowe during an appearance on Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily. “Those years that we were dating, I don’t even feel like, even while I was writing this album, and even still now, I guess, my focus is really on, How can I be a well-rounded person? And apart from my career, my focus wasn’t even on my career.”

She added, “And same thing with those years that we were together. My focus was just, How can I live a happy life and be in a healthy, happy relationship? I was doing therapy a lot. My focus really has shifted. And even now while I’m in promo mode, honestly, if I’m not having fun, what’s the fucking point? I think as I get older, yeah, the priorities shift. And I feel like that was that way for both of us. Because we both started so young too, we’re really learning how to be healthy adults. And that sometimes means not having your number one focus be your career. And that’s okay.”

As for how she’s feeling now? “I love Shawn,” she said, per E! News. “And I feel like there is literally nothing but love for him. And this song is mostly just about like, ‘Okay, how do I make a song that shows the cycles of love, and life, and gives people….’ Whatever it is that’s going on in your life…hopefully, this can make you be like, ‘It is that way now, but things are always taking crazy turns.’”

March 21, 2022: Mendes discussed adjusting to single life in an Instagram video. “You don’t realize when you’re breaking up with someone…you think it’s the right thing to do, you don’t realize all this shit that comes after it,” Mendes said. “Like, who do I call when I’m, like, in a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m, like, fucking on the edge? I think that’s the reality that kind of hit me, it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m on my own now.’ Now I feel like finally, I’m actually on my own, and I hate that. That’s my reality, you know?”

April 1, 2022: While discussing his song “When You’re Gone” during an interview with Extra, Mendes confirmed that he shared the song with Cabello ahead of its release. “Camila and I have always been writers for as long as we’ve known each other, so we understand what that means. And we respect what that means. And there’ll always be transparency between us.”

American Horror Story‘s upcoming 12th season will spin an especially terrifying tale about pregnancy, which is saying a lot for a franchise that has already seen two women give birth to anti-christs.

Details are finally beginning to trickle out about the horror anthology’s next installment, which we now know will be called American Horror Story: Delicate. In true AHS fashion, some reports have yet to be confirmed, but what has been formally announced is already setting Twitter ablaze.

We’re of course referring to the bombshell reveal that the season will be led by none other than Kim Kardashian, a good friend of series co-creator Ryan Murphy, who was apparently impressed with the reality star’s acting chops while watching her 2021 Saturday Night Live hosting gig.

News of Kardashian’s casting was met with mixed responses from fans (and plenty of people who have never seen an episode of this show in their lives), but you might want to buckle up, because her introduction into the AHS universe isn’t the only major swing being taken by the long-running franchise this season.

Read on for a breakdown of everything we know about AHS: Delicate so far, from its potentially polarizing cast to its surprising source material, then drop a comment with your thoughts on Season 12 below.

Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) didn’t hold back her anger at Piers Morgan for what sounded as if he was comparing Jan 6. insurrectionist to expelled (and now reinstated) Black Tennessee State Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson – and Bill Maher backed her all the way.

Porter, Morgan and actor Benjamin McKenzie joined Maher on his weekly show “Overtime” on CNN that follows “Real Time With Bill Maher” on HBO Friday nights. The first question posed from the audience was about the Tennessee representatives that were facing explosion. When Maher noted they used bullhorns, Morgan jumped in and began to compare them to the Capitol rioters. And Porter wasn’t having any of it.

“And [they] interrupted the proceedings which, of course, when that happened on January the 6th in a much larger and more violent way, all the people currently cheering on the two Tennessee legislators were the ones who would have been condemning and castigating what happened,” Morgan said, interrupting Maher’s introduction to the topic.

Porter fired back, “You’re not actually comparing.”

“No, no, I’m not,” Morgan responded in defense.

“You actually did just compare,” she threw back at him.

Morgan took a moment to gather his thoughts and then attempted to explain what he was trying to say.

“No, no. Here is what I’m comparing,” Morgan said. “When you have a mob of protesters, and they’re going into a legislative chamber, whether it’s at the Capitol or whether it’s in Tennessee, the principle is the same. And if you don’t have the same principle response to both of those things, regardless of scale, the principle.”

But Porter wasn’t buying what Morgan was selling and set the record straight on how the two are nowhere near the same.

“Listen, the principle is different,” Porter began. “They were Tennessee legislature — legislators who went into the chamber and admittedly broke the rules of decorum partly because they were being silenced when they wanted to talk following the rules of decorum about gun violence prevention.”

Fired up, she added, “What happened on Jan 6. was a bunch of bats–t, crazy f—kers with guns. Who killed police people! Piers, that’s not the same.”

Morgan went on, trying to make the point that he agreed with what the Tennessee legislators were saying in protest and their position on guns. “I just think, in the end, you’ve got to be consistent about the way you view —,” he started, only for Maher to interrupt him.

“That is a terrible analysis,” Maher said. “Why bring it up? That’s a terrible analogy.”

You can watch the full exchange above and judge for yourself who won the argument.

It might be the first game of the CPL season, but Forge FC and Cavalry FC wasted no time in renewing their hostilities at Tim Hortons Field.

The two sides traded goals twice and yellow cards throughout the game, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

In typical early season Forge fashion, the home team got off to a slow start, with Cavalry drawing first blood in the 36th minute and forward Myer Bevan getting his first of the season from inside the 18 yard box.

The lead didn’t last long, as Forge forward Jordan Hamilton was fouled by Cavalry’s keeper after a long pass into the box.  Hamilton converted on the penalty kick in the 41st minute tying up the game before the half ended.

Three yellow cards, including one to Forge FC’s bench, were handed out in the final five minutes in the half with the two teams showing why they don’t get along very well.

The second half saw the two teams go back and forth before Cavalry’s Mikael Cantave struck a ball from 25 yards out and put in the top left corner of the net, past keeper Triston Henry in the 64th minute.

Sixteen minutes later with Forge FC pressing for the equalizer, Alessandro Hojabrpour crossed it in from the endline across to Noah Jensen to tie it.

Despite chances from both sides, and seven minutes of extra time, the two sides were unable to get a winner.

Forge FC Manager Bobby Smyrniotis said there were opportunities to win, but thought his team played well.

“This season is 28 games – nothing gets settled today – nothing ever gets settled in the first two weeks of the CPL season.”

He said despite the changes to the Cavalry roster in the off-season, the team still competed hard.

“I think it’s a team that’s always competing – hopefully they’ll put full effort in their other games and tire themselves out.”

The game was a hard fought contest and the 6892 fans in the stands at Tim Hortons Field left happy with the tie.

It might be the first game of

Samsung and LG are among a number of tech companies that are quietly making a new push to Hollywood on the potential of LED display tech to replace theater projection systems that have been used since the birth of cinema. It would be a radical change.

A projection system, true to its name, projects images onto the big screen. An LED wall is akin to a sophisticated, massive TV screen, and its use would render the projection booth a thing of the past. At this early stage, major U.S. theater chains are not using the tech.

The companies are hesitant to share many details on their plans — Samsung’s Onyx LED displays for cinema are installed in roughly 100 cinema auditoriums worldwide, including at The Culver Theater in Culver City — but Hollywood insiders have recently seen new demonstrations of the tech, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

“As with any new technology, there are a lot of very positive and some very scary things,” says director and cinematographer Jay Holben, who worked with this tech — categorized in the industry as “direct view” displays — as part of an American Society of Cinematographers-led project to create standardized test material for all types of displays.

Dominic Glynn, senior scientist at Pixar Animation Studios, adds: “We are, generally speaking, very strong supporters of the new creative opportunities that these technologies bring.” Glynn calls such direct view screens “very ambitious and very capable” in areas such as high dynamic range and brightness. (Pixar released Lightyear on one such screen at Houston’s Star Cinema Grill for paying audiences in 2022.)

But there’s still a lot of work to be done, and for Holben and others, a “detrimental” concern is how sound is handled. This is because in traditional cinema, there are speakers directly behind the screen, which is not doable with LED panels. But the biggest issue might be how costs will factor into theater owners’ decisions about whether to adopt this technology.

Holben notes that pricey LEDs also involve “significantly” more power draw and heat output (requiring more air conditioning) compared with projection systems, adding: “They also require a rigging metal structure that isn’t normally present to hold the weight of the screens, which can vibrate with sound. They are all pretty big expenses for theater owners.”

Tech developer Barco, meanwhile, is in the process of introducing its HDR-capable “light steering” laser projection systems to Hollywood, while, at least for now, keeping its LED displays focused on markets such as digital signage. “There are some fundamental properties of LEDs that don’t make them a good match with the cinema market … the price point is the most critical,” says Barco’s Tom Bert, a senior member of the product management team in its Entertainment division. (Similarly, Sony’s CLED technology is currently aimed at other uses, including virtual production and color grading rooms.)

Many Hollywood groups are already working to make LED displays a viable option in cinema. In late 2022, studios consortium Digital Cinema Initiatives released its technical specification for direct view display — effectively a recommended technical blueprint for showing its movies with these new systems.

Several such displays, including tech from Samsung and LG, have since been certified as DCI-compliant. Among the work DCI still hopes to accomplish is creating a spec for a standard Digital Cinema Package (the digital equivalent of a film print) that could be used in LED-based auditoriums without the need to create a separate version of the movie.

Looking ahead, Pixar’s Glynn says the creative opportunities are there to take advantage of the tech, but filmmakers must control their use. “If [direct view displays] gain enough excitement amongst the audiences, there would be a really compelling reason to sort of invite audiences back to the big screen to see something that perhaps they didn’t see first go-round, or they wanna revisit in this, in this new format,” he notes, so long as “we don’t exploit the technology for its own sake. It always has to be in service of the story or complementary to the narrative.”

This will be among the topics addressed Saturday when the NAB Show opens in Las Vegas. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers will present a series of panels that will explore the future of cinema.

Sinclair-owned KMPH-TV, FOX 26, in Fresno, California, has viewers up in arms after posting video (with sound) of a tow truck blowing through a red light, T-boning another car and coming to rest on top of it that resulted in the death of a woman. Worse yet, the Instagram post included hashtags like #killed, #dead and #fatal and #caughtoncamera.

Response to the video and the hashtags (the hashtag #dead was eventually deleted) was consistent across the board, with Instagram users outraged over the station’s total disregard for the family and friends of the victim, who now “can relive the fatal crash over and over again.”

The post read simply, “A woman is now dead after a tow truck driver ran a red light early Wednesday morning in north Fresno,” and was followed by the hashtags #fatal #crash #Fresno #towtruck #woman #killed #redlight #caughtoncamera. It also includes a link to a YouTube channel dedicated to video of accidents at that same intersection “that has gained a notorious reputation for being one of the most dangerous intersections in the city.”

TheWrap reached out to KMPH-TV for comment about the video, its hashtags and the backlash, but have yet to receive a response.

“What’s with those hashtags? Are you trying to get visitors traffic from someone’s death? Like using ‘dead’…?!? What’s wrong with your Social Media team/manager?” one viewer wrote.

Another viewer added, “A women is dead, and you post this for everyone to see? Her poor family.”

“Why would you post this full video? What is the news value? What’s the value to anyone and using the hashtag “killed”??? This is disgusting,” one person wrote.

“I am not sure what I am more disgusted about @kmphfox26 The fact that you actually posted the video of the moment a poor woman lost her life? The fact that you posted it with sound? Or the insensitive ass hashtags?” another viewer wrote.

Other comments made include:

“Whoever wrote these should be fired. So tacky and thoughtless.”

“I would delete the hashtags. Do you really need them? Lots of followers already. I know it’s habit but omgee. Rest her soul. Prayers for her family. The video must be horrifying for them to see. I’d have nightmares. This could be a mother, sister, aunt, daughter, grandma, cousin. I know that this news gets attention but sometimes things don’t need to be shown. ????”

“This is heartbreaking shame on you Fox 26 for sharing this. I can only imagine how her family must feel.”

“Shame on you @kmphfox26 !!!! Showing the moment a woman is killed then adding hashtags like it’s no big deal. #kmphfox26isdusgusting”

Maisie Williams turned 26 on Apr. 15 and showed off her beauty and toned physique in a brown bikini top. The actress posed for a selfie, which she posted to Instagram, and had her hair slicked back as she gave a serious face to the camera. She also wore no makeup as she sat in a chair.

“26 today, feeling very woman, feeling very mama x,” she wrote in the caption. Her fans were quick to comment on the epic photo, including one person who joked that she was now “Too old for [Leonardo] DiCaprio,” since the actor is known for often dating women 25 years old or younger. Maisie didn’t hesitate to respond with, “poor Leo” and a broken heart emoji.

Before Maisie got attention for her birthday post, she made headlines for her breakup with Reuben Selby. She announced the split in her Instagram story on Feb. 23 and called it the “end of an era” as she shared a red toned photo of them taking a selfie together. “The end of an era [broken heart emoji],” she wrote. “[Reuben] and I have decided to end our relationship. Since we met five years ago, our connection always extended deeply into our shared, and separate, creative careers… and it will continue to do so.”

Ananya Panday is enjoying some quality, away from her hectic work schedule at an undisclosed location.

Ananya Panday is currently vacationing at an undisclosed location. On Saturday, the actress took to her Instagram handle and dropped a series of pictures from her holiday and looks like she is enjoying some quality time all by herself, away from her hectic work schedule.

In the first picture, Ananya can be seen standing on a riverside with a stick in her hand. Another photo featured the actress lying on the grass with her eyes closed. She can also be seen reading a book in a picture as she sported swimwear and denims. Next, Ananya can be seen taking a walk with a dogs. She also shared a picture of a starry sky. Soon after Ananya shared the pictures, fans took to the comment section to shower love on their favourite actress. While one of the fans called her ‘cutest’, another user tagged her as ‘My girl’. Ananya’s BFF Shanaya Kapoor also wrote, ‘miss u’ with a red heart emoji. “You look strong and confident,” one of the comments read.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Ananya Panday was last seen in Liger with Vijay Deverakonda. Released in August last year, the film failed to leave a mark at the box office. Next, Ananya will be seen in Kho Gaye Hum Kahan alongside Siddhant Chaturvedi and Adarsh Gourav. Besides this, she will also be sharing the screen space with Ayushmann Khurrana for Dream Girl 2.

On the personal front, Ananya and Aditya Roy Kapur’s dating rumours have been making headlines for a long time now. However, Ananya’s mother Bhavana opened up about her daughter’s relationship status and revealed that the Liger actress is single. “The fact is that Ananya is single and link ups happen in a profession like this. It’s okay. It’s like that’s a part and parcel of an actor’s life, and you have to take everything in, good or bad,” Bhavana told E-Times.

Fans now have a better idea as to when the new DCU will start under DC Studios CEO James Gunn.

While Gunn made it clear Superman: Legacy would be the theatrical debut of the newly reinvigorated super-powered universe, there is seemingly one project coming before that film (Creature Commandos) that will serve as somewhat of a narrative canapé to the new story being told.

Creature Commandos specifically looks as though it will release first, bringing an animated adventure into the super-powered universe on HBO Max.

However, up to this point, it has been unclear when Creature Commandos would hit the streaming service, officially kicking off the new DCU.

Creature Commandos Release Date Window Confirmed

DC

James Gunn confirmed on Twitter that DC Studios’ Creature Commandos series is, in fact, set to release on Max in 2024.

This is in line with the anticipated release order for James Gunn’s new DCU slate, marking the official beginning of this new era for the blue brand with the animated series.

If this 2024 date holds true, then fans should expect to see the series later in the year, so that the gap between Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy is not too long.

With Aquaman 2 coming out at the end of 2023, it seems likely Warner Bros. would want a significant breath between the ending of one DC universe and the beginning of another.

James Gunn (who is serving as a writer on the project) is in the middle of casting for the animated series, with The Purge star Jack Grillo recently having been the first actor confirmed to appear in the super-powered title.

When To Expect Creature Commandos?

Right now, the best bet for Creature Commandos’ release feels like Fall 2024.

This fall date will allow enough time between the old DCEU and the beginning of James Gunn’s DC Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, while also not leaving too much of a gap before Superman: Legacy hits theaters in July 2025.

One also cannot forget the Elseworlds story, Joker: Folie à Deux, which is set for release on October 4, 2024. While Gunn likely is not too worried about crossing streams on that front, he will probably try his best to not step on other DC-branded toes.

This means Creature Commandos makes a lot of sense for either September or November 2024, leaving enough room for Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel.

No official date is confirmed as of yet, but Creature Commandos is set to hit HBO Max sometime in 2024.

Ahead of its April 19th release date, Sony and Guerrilla Games on Friday shared a new trailer for Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores. The DLC is set to tell the next chapter of Aloy’s story. The trailer offers a fresh look at the Burning Shores, a volcanic archipelago that was once home to Los Angeles. We also get a closer look at the Metal Devil boss fight that was teased at the end of the announcement trailer Sony and Guerrilla .

That battle is one of the reasons Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores won’t be available on PlayStation 4, even though you can play the original game on Sony’s . “The cityscape ruins of LA and its surroundings are highly detailed and require a lot of processing power as well as fast streaming technology to run properly,” Horizon Forbidden West Game Director Mathijs de Jonge . He went on to add there’s “a particular battle scene that requires a LOT of memory and processing power.”

The second edition of the French Comedy Club unfolds at the Lumière Cinéma in Beverly Hills this weekend.

The event, which is open to cinema industry professionals and the public, aims to generate business and raise awareness about French comedy.

Olivier Albou and Laurence Schonberg at Paris-based sales and production company Other Angle Pictures have spearheaded the initiative, with the support of French export body Unifrance and artists residencies body Villa Albertine.

Over the past decade, their company has brought a raft of French comedies to the international market including Netflix hits Spoiled Brats and The Last Mercenary.

This year’s line-up includes the Other Angle title Sweet Little Things as well as Alibi.com 2, which is sold by Newen Connect, and How To Survive Without Mum and Stay With Us, which are both handled internationally by Studiocanal.

The showcase opens Saturday with Ludovic Bernard’s How To Survive Without Mum, starring Franc Dubosc as a stay-at-home dad whose dream skiing holiday falls apart after his lawyer wife is called back to work, leaving him to care for their four children alone.

The film opened in second place at the box office in France on April 12, after Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The comedy is a sequel to 2020 hit 10 Days Without Mum, which grossed close to $10 million in France.

Mélanie Auffret’s Sweet Little Things (Les Petites Victoires) stars Michel Blanc as a pensioner who enrols at a small village school to learn to read and write where he goes on to challenge the teacher (Julia Platon), who is also the local mayor.

The film won the Jury Prize and the public prize at the French comedy-focused Alpe d’Huez film festival in January and has grossed $6.4 million since its release in early March.

Philippe Lacheau’s Alibi.com 2 is currently in third place in the French box office for 2023, having beaten the performance of its 2017 predecessor to gross around $32.2 million at home so far.

Elmaleh’s Stay With Us revolves around a man whose family embark on a campaign to revive his connection with his Jewish roots after he announces his plan to convert to Catholicism.

The film was released last November, grossing $3.4 million. Film Movement acquired North American rights in January for a release in 2023.

Albou says they hope to build on last year’s edition which drew strong audiences and also resulted in a remake deal for the 2022 title Retirement Home, starring Kev Adams as a petty criminal sentenced to 300 hours worth of community service in a retirement home.

“Over 800 people turned up at the theater right after Covid and we hope to have similar audiences this year,” he said. “We think French comedy has the potential to attract an audience in theaters because we could see last year that people were enjoying the films and laughing so much that we wanted to do this again.”

Today, in “The World Is A Strange And Unsettling Place, Musical Theater Edition”: The family of Topol—the theatrical and cinematic legend best known for playing Tevye the dairyman from Fiddler On The Roof more than 3000 times over a multi-decade career—has announced that he was also, occasionally, a spy.

This is per Deadline, reporting on an announcement the family made this week, just a month or so after Chaim Topol—mostly known professionally just by his last name—died. Said announcement revealed that, in the midst of all that massive theatrical success, everyone’s favorite roof-fiddler speculator also sometimes participated in missions for Mossad, the intelligence agency of his native Israel.

The family gave this news to Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, including stating that Topol’s international fame made it easy for him to take pictures or deliver documents without anybody thinking anything other than, ‘Oh shit, Tevye!” Here’s Topol’s son Omer, describing some of what his dad got up to over the years:

I don’t know exactly what the appropriate definition is for the missions and duties he performed. But what is clear is that Dad was involved in secret missions on behalf of the Mossad. His status in those years was that of an international star, and he could go anywhere he wanted. He had the ability to deliver documents and take pictures without anyone questioning anything. But he was no James Bond or anything like that!

None of what Topol is alleged to have done—including supposedly assisting in the bugging of an embassy, and “pretending to be a dental patient to cover for drilling noise”—quite rises to the level of, say, Gong Show host Chuck Barris claiming to have killed people for the CIA. (Claims Barris mostly later admitted were a joke, albeit one he got a book and a movie out of, Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind.) Even so: It’s going to make that next watch of the 1971 Fiddler movie a little more exciting.

For actors Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts, as well as director Paris Barclay, the critical mission with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was to shift the focus of the narrative around the serial killer away from Dahmer himself and toward his many victims, as well as the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed him to get away with his crimes.

In an appearance today at Deadline’s Contenders TV, all three creatives noted that there was going to be a significant challenge in taking this series on, given the need to immerse themselves in the darkness of Dahmer. “But I think the writing, it was so smart and very careful to show many different perspectives, not just Dahmer’s. And that was one rule that we had shooting this, was that it was never going to be told from Dahmer’s POV,” Peters told moderator Peter White. “So, it felt worth it to me to dive into it and really push myself.”

Playing Glenda Cleveland, a composite of multiple individuals in Dahmer’s neighborhood who sounded the alarm on the murderer, to no avail, was Nash-Betts, who admitted to asking herself, “What did I get myself into?” after saying yes to the project on the basis of Ryan Murphy’s involvement alone. “And then as I began to read, my heart began to break because for many wrong reasons, this woman was not heard. She was not believed. And I’ve been at those places in my life. I know people who’ve been at those places where you are very marginalized,” the actress shared. “So then once the tears came, I was like, ‘Yeah, of course I’ll do it.’ Because I wanted so desperately to give a voice to someone who had gone unheard for so long. And it was important for me to get it right.”

Barclay, who directed the show’s sixth and tenth episodes, called the project “the most difficult” he’s taken on “in probably 20 years.” But he at the same time saw the story in front of him as vital, given its continuing resonance today. “This is still happening, this unheard-ness of people of color, this ignorance of people of color. You see what’s happening in Nashville, so the story really has a resonance to today,” said the director. “I mean, it’s about Jeffrey Dahmer in title only, but it’s really about the systemic racism that allows this sort of thing to happen for so long without us fighting back.”

A smash hit for Netflix that came in as the platform’s second most-watched English-language series in its first 28 days, and its third ever to pass 1 billion views in 60 days, Dahmer was initially presented as a limited series, though it’s grown in success into an anthology, with future installments to examine “the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society.” Peters recently won a Golden Globe for his lead performance, with Nash-Betts landing a Critics’ Choice Award and both claiming SAG Award noms, to boot. Murphy and Ian Brennan co-created the show and exec produced alongside Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Peters and Janet Mock. Carl Franklin exec produced the pilot, with Color of Change President Rashad Robinson serving as consulting producer.

Taylor Swift is making a caveat to her previous rule about the surprise songs portion of her Eras Tour concerts.

The 33-year-old pop superstar announced to concert-goers in Tampa, Fla., on Friday (April 14) that she will now allow herself to perform certain songs as many times as she likes during the mini acoustic set of her upcoming stadium shows.

“Basically when I started the tour, I was like, ‘In the acoustic section, I am never repeating a song. I’m never doing songs more than once.’ But now I’m like, ‘There are so many songs I want to do more than once,’” Swift said in a fan-captured clip from Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium.

She added, “So, I’m making a little caveat to the rule, which is that if [a song] is on Midnights, I can do it however many times I want, because Midnights is the most accurate picture of my life to date.”

During the surprise songs segment of her Tampa concert on Friday, Swift delivered the live debuts of the Midnights (3am Edition) track “The Great War,” alongside frequent collaborator Aaron Dessner, and the Midnights song “You’re on Your Own, Kid.” The songs peaked at No. 26 and No. 8, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 2022.

Swift first revealed her intentions for the acoustic section of her long-awaited live show at the March 17 launch of her Eras Tour in Glendale, Ariz.

“The plan, the goal, would be to play different songs every single night and never repeat one. Right? So that when you heard one on this tour, you would know it’s the only time that I was going to play it in the acoustic set, unless — caveat — unless I mess it up so badly,” the star said with a small laugh, “that I have to do it over again in some other city. Send your best wishes towards me that I don’t do that.”

Windows 11 has witnessed the debut of a much-anticipated feature for File Explorer, namely an integrated photo gallery.

Build 23435 for the Dev channel introduces this new piece of functionality, which represents a large piece in a bigger puzzle Microsoft is busy solving – that of how to make File Explorer better with a full revamp.

File Explorer is the very folders you open on the desktop, no doubt on a daily basis, so it’s very much a core part of the Windows 11 interface. And in this case, the addition of a Gallery gives you an easy way to browse through your photos, right there when using File Explorer.

Clicking on ‘Gallery’ presents a chronological photo gallery, with the most recent images at the top, and a timeline to the right, allowing for swift scrolling back into the past if required.

As Microsoft points out in the blog post (opens in new tab) for build 23435, the Gallery takes the same form as the ‘All Photos’ view in the Photos app.

It’s possible to decide which images get included in the new Gallery via a dropdown menu that lets you add folders. Also, Gallery will show up in the ‘file picker dialog’, which is the panel that pops up to choose a file, for example, when you’re attaching something to an email (so if that something is a pic, you can browse via the Gallery).

This is a major addition to File Explorer, but not one that’s a surprise. Mainly because we’ve seen the File Explorer photo gallery already, thanks to intrepid Windows 11 testers who’ve dug under the hood of the OS. In short, Gallery has been present in preview builds for some time, and has previously been enabled using configuration tools, so we’ve already had a couple of decent peeks at the new Windows 11 feature.

Still, it’s great to see Gallery up and rocking in its full form, finally, and to discover more about the nuances of how it works. Albeit there’s a caveat here – not all Windows 11 testers will see this right now, as Microsoft is taking it slowly with the Gallery rollout.

The software giant notes that it will monitor feedback on the feature to “see how it lands before pushing it out to everyone”, and that currently, we’re at the start of the rollout. So, reading between the lines, you might have to get rather lucky to see the photo gallery in File Explorer with build 23435, but we’d imagine it’ll be coming to a good deal more testers pretty soon.

Speaking of expected timelines, when might Microsoft’s big overhaul of File Explorer, complete with Gallery, actually arrive in the release version of Windows 11? That’s still a good way off, and we’re likely looking at the big annual update for Windows 11 later in 2023 (known as 23H2).

Hollywood welcomed Jeremy Renner back with open arms as he proved he actually is a superhero, returning to the red carpet only a few short months since his terrifying accident. Meanwhile, at the TCM Classic Film Festival, Angie Dickinson proved that 91 is still young; and at the “Schmigadoon!” Season 2 Premiere, Jane Krakowski brought shock and awe (and squad goals) to everyone over 50. We were also inside the “Blindspotting” bash, partied with nuns at the “Mrs. Davis” debut and began to say goodbye to “Mrs. Maisel,” all here in our inside glimpse into what Hollywood’s most interesting people have been doing lately.

The “Blindspotting” Season 2 Premiere party at NeueHouse Hollywood felt like attending a family reunion, as the cast and crew of the Starz comedy series came together to celebrate its return to television. The evening kicked off with a screening of two episodes from the new season that premieres on April 14, followed by a Q&A panel with the cast and creators Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, with moderation by actor LeVar Burton.

After the main event, guests enjoyed drinks and appetizers and mingled with Starz executives, cast and crew members from the series, and celebrity guests like “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom Jr. and Paul W. Downs, the co-creator of the HBO Max hit comedy series “Hacks.”

A sequel series to the 2018 film of the same name, “Blindspotting” stars Jasmine Cephas Jones, Helen Hunt, Benjamin Turner, Jaylen Barron, Candace Nicholas-Lippman, Atticus Woodward and Casal, who all made the scene in style.

“It’s such a gem of a show. I’ve been in this business for a long time and it’s not easy to find a show that’s this special, full of joy and imagination,” Starz President of Original Programming Kathryn Busby told us during the event

“Rennervations” Premiere

Regency Village Theater, Westwood

Jeremy Renner made his first public appearance at the Regency Village Theater in Westwood since his accident on New Year’s Day with a snow plow that crushed him. He broke more than 30 bones and dealt with severe injuries that hospitalized him for weeks and took months to recover.

Renner took some time to talk with TheWrap and discussed what inspires him and motivates him – especially following the injury.

“Kids in general inspire me, my daughter for sure does. I try to make it a prerequisite for that to spend my time with people, do they inspire me? Do they inspire me to be better?” he said, still showing some residue of the accident as he worked the red carpet.

During a special Q&A following the screening of an episode of the reality series that centers around Renner and his crew reimagining decommissioned vehicles and rebuilding them into creations that serve communities around the world, Jimmy Kimmel asked Renner how his injury gave him a new outlook on life.

“A big part of my recovery was the show,” Renner revealed. “[This night] set a big milestone for me to get better, to make sure that our hard work was not for naught. I ran my damn self over, right? Like there’s no alternative. To me, it was easy because I had somewhere to go and something to point toward –  and I had a lot of love, man.” Find “Rennervations” on Disney+. – Elijah Gil

“Mrs. Davis” Premiere

The premiere of the new Peacock series Mrs. Davis took place at the Directors Guild of America building in Hollywood and was “nun” short of being a fun-filled experience – just like the show.

Guests were greeted by nuns dressed in blue with church music playing in the background. The show centers around an AI entity who battles with Simone (Betty Gilpin) on her quest to find and destroy the “Holy Grail.”

TheWrap caught up with Gilpin who revealed her thoughts about the future of Artificial Intelligence. “It terrifies me, it makes me feel a thousand years old! I try and keep my two year old away from the screens, and then realize, oh I can’t even pee without looking at my screen, I’m fully addicted to this thing that I’m telling my child is poison. So I’m like, I’ve got to get a handle on that before she’s old enough to cognizant,” she joked.

Other cast members who joined the festivities included Jake McDorman, Andy McQueen, Elizabeth Marvel and David Arquette. We caught up with Arquette who says he “absolutely” had FOMO watching the new “Scream 6” horror flick, which he isn’t in. He’s still a fan of that slasher series that made him a movie star, and says he hopes that Neve Campbell returns for “Scream 7” “I’d love to see her come back and go real hardcore Sidney Prescott.” – Elijah Gil

“Schmigadoon!” celebrated its Season 2 launch – and kicked off its Emmys prospects – with an every-seat-filled screening and talkback with cast and creatives at the TV Academy Saban Media Center in North Hollywood. And while it was, of course, to celebrate the awards-worthy work of all involved on the musical parody series, one name was on the tip of everyone’s tongue: Jane Krakowski.

The audience was absolutely rapturous for Krakowski, having come fresh off a screening of Episode 3, “Bells and Whistles,” which closes with a show-stopping number by the five-time Emmy nominee as a “Chicago”-inspired lawyer Bobbie Flanagan.

Executive producer Andrew Singer – who was joined on the panel by co-creator Cinco Paul and stars Krakowski, Cecily Strong, Keegan-Michael Key, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil and Tituss Burgess – even called for another round of applause for the former “30 Rock” star for the trapeze, splits, roller-blading and more that the courtroom number had her doing.

“It was a big thing to prepare for because I wanted to be able to fulfill it for how great it was written on the page – I had to start stretching immediately to get the splits back!” Krakowski told TheWrap earlier. “For this number, [the script] had said that ‘she enters on a trapeze,’ which I was like, ‘Yay!’ I was so excited. I asked if I could stay on the trapeze and do a few more tricks, and Cinco said if you want to go to trapeze school and learn some things, we’ll open the ceiling. So I came back and I knew some things and the scenic design opened the ceiling more so I could fly throughout the room, which was just a dream come true.”

“I’m fully aware that I’m not going to get to do this, maybe, again, so this was a once in a lifetime chance,” the actress added.

The evening closed out with a buzzy TV Academy reception with the stars happily mingling, all amid a “Schmigadoon!” purple glow, downing themed drinks like the Show Time vodka mixer and Break A Leg mocktail.

“The Last Thing He Told Me” Season Premiere

Another damp night in SoCal (like many evenings of this incredibly wet winter-spring 2023 season) found the cast and creative team behind “The Last Thing He Told Me” walking a drizzly carpet at the Regency Bruin Theater in Westwood. Star and executive producer Jennifer Garner looked gorgeous as usual in a white dress studded with dainty gold bars paired with gold heels.

“Trust is a major theme in ‘The Last Thing He Told Me,’” Garner told TheWrap. “It really is about, ‘Can you know the person that you love the most? Is it even possible? Does everyone have enough secrets that you can never actually know who they are?’”

The star-studded crowd made the best of the weather, as they gathered on the carpet designed with a murky purple backdrop to match the show’s mysterious premise. Reese Witherspoon, whose production company Hello Sunshine adapted the show from Laura Dave’s best-selling novel, joined the celebration, along with Hello Sunshine’s president of Film and TV Lauren Neustadter.

Ser Jaime Lannister himself (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) got spiffy, wearing an ice blue velvet suit jacket that matched his wife’s sparkly light blue pantsuit; he’s Garner’s husband in the thriller series. Aisha Tyler, who plays Garner’s best friend, reminded everyone that she’s often the tallest woman in the room!

The light rain couldn’t dampen the mood, especially of author Laura Dave and her husband and the series showrunner Josh Singer, who seem thrilled with their  “The Last Thing He Told Me” marks the latest Hello Sunshine project to hit a streamer — Apple TV+. PaleyFest: “Mrs. Maisel”

Dolby Theatre, Hollywood

Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino attend PaleyFest LA 2023 – “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” at The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The cast of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” celebrated their final season on the closing night of PaleyFest – but not before lightly ribbing the ensemble of “Yellowstone” for ditching their earlier scheduled festival appearance last-minute.

The Emmy-winning Prime Video comedy series starring Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein was celebrated with a closing night screening and Q&A, marking the last event of the 40th William S. Paley Television Festival at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. After screening a sizzle reel of the beloved Prime Video show, several members of the cast and the creative duo behind the comedy — creator, writer, director and EP Amy Sherman-Palladino and writer, director and EP Daniel Palladino — appeared onstage for the Q&A, moderated by Stacey Wilson Hunt.

After introducing the cast members who attended, including Brosnahan, Borstein, Tony Shalhoub, Michael Zegen and Caroline Aaron, Hunt also listed the names of other members of the cast who were not able to attend. Palladino added a punchline to the moderator’s statement when he referenced “Kevin Costner” as one of the missing cast members, which was met with an uproar of laughter and wows from the audience and the others on the stage.

The “Maisel” celebration event was hosted just three days after “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, star Kevin Costner and other main cast members from the popular show skipped their appearance at the festival at the last minute, leaving fans in attendance in shock and demanding refunds.

When asked what made her the most proud of creating the series, Sherman-Palladino said that focusing the show on a female friendship centered around ambition, camaraderie and “not talking about men all the time” was the best part. She also mused about how the show examines what can happen when women support each other as unconditionally as Susie and Midge do while chasing their dreams.

“It’s good to have someone to tell you you haven’t completely lost your mind,” she told the crowd to more applause. – Jose Alejandro Bastiadas

The 14th TCM Classic Film Festival returned to Hollywood with a world premiere restoration of the 1956 Western “Rio Bravo” to a packed house at the TCL Chinese Theater. Directors Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson joined new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Davd Zaslav and TCM host Ben Mankiewicz before that classic unspooled, to discuss the world of film restoration.

Spielberg said it takes “virgin elements” to make a restoration work, and that while different directors on the board of the Film Foundation – which put the night’s restoration of “Rio Bravo” together – have different ideas about that, he tends to follow with whatever the foundation’s head, director Martin Scorsese, is interested in. Then to the delight of everyone in the audience, Mankiewicz had a chat with “Rio Bravo” star Angie Dickinson, who at 91 is still as sharp as ever. She talked about everything, from declaring Frank Sinatra to be “the love of my life” to how stars Dean Martin and John Wayne would often play chess together – though they didn’t tend to invite her to join in.

Last year’s opening night afterparty took place at the lavish Academy Museum, so the transition to the swank L.A. eatery Mother Wolf was an offbeat decision. The festival went all out decorating the restaurant and the event space above. Happy movie buffs walked through a hallway of various cardboard cutouts of famous Hollywood legs, inspired by 1942’s “42nd Street” poster. Various activations showed how to sync a movie’s dialogue to the action, while the ceilings were festooned in umbrellas in an homage to “Singin’ in the Rain.” The place was packed, and stars including Danny Huston and Rebecca de Mornay popped in, each of whom will be introducing a film at TCM Festival, which runs through April 16. – Kristen Lopez

Well, if you share a bond like this with someone, a birthday card would indeed be smaller. Therefore, the 46-year-old actor made a music video with their Wrexham buddies. As many people mispronounce McElhenney’s name, his buddy made it clear what his name really is.

While the People’s Icon gifted this hilarious video to his friend, now, his wife is also eagerly waiting for her gift as well. Because this Hollywood couple is famous for their online trolling, it is possible that Lively’s gift would be as hilarious as this.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival‘s brand is built upon showstopping performances like Bad Bunny’s Friday night headlining set or much-talked about moments like the Blink-182 reunion in the Sahara Tent.

But one aspect of the festival that you can only experience on the grounds is the showstopping fashion, sometimes quite literally, as festivalgoers stop, drop and pose for a selfie.

For two weekends, the lush green field at the Empire Polo Club becomes a catwalk for festivalgoers. The giant colorful art installations and the festival’s signature Ferris wheel with the San Jacinto Mountains in the distance provide scenic backdrops for fashionable festivalgoers to create their own set of digital souvenirs.

During the day it’s not uncommon to see friend groups in matching loud prints or perhaps dressed up as characters. Where’s Waldo? Often at Coachella.

While many festivalgoers opt for the comfort of T-shirts, tank tops and shorts, others look at the festival as an opportunity to show off their own handiwork.

Big, bright colors are still in, as is showing skin — Coachella is in the desert, after all.

Take a look at some of the most memorable outfits we came across at the festival, and the inspiration behind them.

We’ll be updating this gallery throughout the weekend, so check back for more fashion from the field.

Fashion designer Shauna Brohier, 23, traveled from Sydney to attend Coachella for the first time.

“I do festival and clubbing wear so I wanted to promote myself and my own outfits. I just love this outfit,” she said.

The top, cut in a halter style, featured an aqua mesh material paired with a colorful stretch print with geometric shapes and long pink fringe — with sequins — hanging below the bust.

She was looking forward to seeing Frank Ocean and Burna Boy at the festival.

Walter Calvillo, 31, traveled from Mexico City for his first Coachella trip with fashion on his mind.

Last year he attended the Tomorrowland festival and decided “this year is for Coachella.”

He handmade his outfit for Friday, spending three weeks hand-sewing the sparkles onto the sleeveless red snakeskin-patterned jumpsuit. He also attached crystals to his hat.

Sara Wilcox, 25, of Las Vegas selected her green checkerboard-patterned jacket and pants to show off street style that matched the tone of some of the big performances on Friday.

“I was thinking Pusha T, Metro [Boomin] and Bad Bunny. I was going for a street style type of look.”

She described it as “colorful but chill.”

And, she said, it kept her covered from the sun during the day and warm during the cool, windy night.

“My inspiration today was just a fun summer vibe. I mixed a woman’s see-through dress with some blue jean shorts and I made it fashion,” said 22-year-old Zion Harris of Los Angeles.

Harris is a dancer and will perform with Rosalía on the festival’s main stage Saturday.

Kade Jones’ Coachella look was inspired by Versace. The 26-year-old from Los Angeles crafted his own top made of loose chains in a halter style.

It took him 24 hours and he used crystal beads and rhinestone chains. Jones made a second one for a friend.

She wore a colorful furry coat on the first night of Coachella, paired with white rectangular-framed sunglasses with pink lenses and a crocheted pink hat.

She described it as “funky, fresh, rainbow because I’m gay as f—. You just have to be out and loud and proud.”

Star David Arquette recently revealed that he had “lots of FOMO” over not appearing in Scream VI. While chatting with Variety, the actor spoke about watching the latest installment in the popular slasher franchise after his character Dewey was killed off in 2022’s Scream film.

Arquette said, “It was hard for me to do it, but I also knew I wanted to see it. I loved it.” He added, “It was sad. I had lots of FOMO.” Arquette had previously appeared in all five of the franchise’s Scream films alongside Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers, completing the core trio that continued to escape the killers who took on the Ghostface persona. However, in a shocking move, the fifth film saw Arquettte’s character finally meet his demise at the hands of Ghostface.

Not long after the release of the fifth Scream film, the star spoke to Variety about his character’s death. “I read it. I put it down. I took a deep breath. It was sad. I mean, it’s something that I’ve been a part of for so long. So I had to process that.”

David Arquette Wasn’t the Only Long-Standing Franchise Star Who Didn’t Return for the Latest Scream Movie

Arquette wasn’t the only long-standing franchise star who did not appear in the latest Scream movie. In a statement issued in June 2022, Campbell revealed that she would not be participating in Scream VI. She said, “I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

Still, the star later told PEOPLE that she would consider coming back to the franchise at some point, depending on future salary negotiations.

In Scream VI, Cox’s Gale states that Sidney has moved her family to a safe location as an explanation for her absence in the film.

In addition to Cox, Hayden Panettiere, who appeared in the fourth installment of Scream, also returned to the series along with Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding, who made their series debut in the previous film.

Last month, while chatting with PEOPLE, Barrere revealed that it was “weird” not having Campbell on set but noted that the star choice was “very brave” and “important.”

Barrera said, “This job requires so much of us, not only physically [but] mentally and emotionally. You need to feel like it’s worth it. A part of it is: Are you getting compensated fairly for what you think you’re putting into the work? If you don’t, you’re going to be miserable, so you shouldn’t do it. I applaud her always.”

A US Senator has written an open letter to Sony‘s CEO requesting information on the company’s game exclusivity deals.

North Dakota Republican Senator Kevin Cramer says he sent the letter to Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida “regarding its anti-competitive behavior and to request information on the company’s acquisition agreements”.

In the letter (originally spotted by Axios), Cramer tells Yoshida that he is writing “to express concern about Sony’s efforts to protect its gaming console business from competition”.

He goes on to claim: “I am concerned Sony’s dominance of that market, and its efforts to perpetuate its current position imperils an important economic development opportunity for North Dakota.”

Cramer states that North Dakota has “developed a strategy to lead the nation in computer science and cybersecurity education”, and that “preparing students for careers in gaming is an important component of this effort”.

“Given the growing significance of the gaming industry to North Dakota,” Cramer says, “I am troubled by reports Sony appears to leverage its cominance to exclude competition rather than enabling choice for players and developers.”

He adds: “Increasingly, it appears Sony’s dominance is attributable to exclusionary practices, including paying game publishers not to distribute thieir games on rival platforms.”

He goes on to claim that Sony’s attempt to oppose Microsoft‘s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard is an example of its “anticompetitive conduct”, saying it’s “even more troubling” that “Sony’s lobbying of the FTC and other regulators began shortly after Sony itself acquired Bungie.”

Cramer ends his letter by asking Yoshida for unredacted copies of:

  • all agreements that give Sony an exclusive right to distribute a third-party game
  • all agreements between Sony and third-party publishers that prevent them from releasing their games on other systems
  • all internal company documents “describing the strategic rational” for Sony’s decision to acquire Bungie
  • all correspondence with US government or regulatory agencies relating to video game competition.

Cramer’s letter makes him the latest US member of Congress to accuse Sony of engaging in anti-competitive behaviour.

Last month two letters – one from four Republican members of Congress, the other from six Democrats – accused Sony of deliberately making exclusivity deals with third-party publishers to ensure Xbox doesn’t gain a foothold in Japan.

The letters called on US trade representative Katherine Tai and commerce secretary Gina Raimondo to raise the issue with Japan during trade talks.

Both letters claimed that by not acting on these alleged anti-competitive practices, Japan is effectively putting a US company (Microsoft) at a disadvantage.

Sony has secured a number of third-party titles as PlayStation console exclusives over the years, some of which have come from Japanese publishers. One of the most notable examples of this is the company’s ties with Square Enix, which have seen Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XVI excluded from Xbox.

Another key example from last generation was Capcom‘s Street Fighter V, which has remained exclusive to PS4 and PC ever since its release in 2016.

As Axios notes, Microsoft has previously confirmed that its government affairs team has discussed Sony’s conduct with members of Congress, which may explain the timing of these political accusations aimed at Sony.
