“For them to go backwards and not cast another [actor of color] kind of sucks,” Leguizamo, who starred in the 1993 live-action version, of the upcoming animated movie.

John Leguizamo is saying mamma mia to the new “Super Mario Bros.” casting.

Leguizamo, who played Luigi in the 1993 live-action film opposite Bob Hoskins’ Mario, exclusively told IndieWire at “The Menu” premiere in New York that casting is “going backwards” with the upcoming animated feature film “Super Mario Bros.” The movie made waves after it was revealed that Chris Pratt would be playing Mario opposite Charlie Day’s Luigi. Neither actor is of Italian descent.

“I’m O.G. A lot of people love the original. I did Comic-Con in New York and in Baltimore, and everyone’s like, ‘No, no, we love the old one, the original.’ They’re not feeling the new one,” Leguizamo told IndieWire. “I’m not bitter. It’s unfortunate.”

Leguizamo recalled his turn as Luigi in the 1993 “Super Mario Bros.” movie. “The directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton fought really hard for me to be the lead because I was a Latin man, and they [the studio] didn’t want me to be the lead. They fought really hard, and it was such a breakthrough. For them to go backwards and not cast another [actor of color] kind of sucks.”

Leguizamo’s “The Menu” co-star Anya Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach in the upcoming animated revamp, with Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. The movie premieres April 7, 2023.

Producer and Illumination Studios founder and CEO Chris Meledandri curbed any casting doubts over lead star Pratt and his lack of Italian ethnicity earlier this year.

“We are collaborating with Chris and his experienced team to not just create a character-licensed film, but a new piece of entertainment which brings ‘Super Mario Bros.’ to life on the screen, and allows everyone to enjoy whether or not they know about the game,” Meledandri said during the CineEurope convention via Deadline. “When people hear Chris Pratt’s performance, the criticism will evaporate, maybe not entirely — people love to voice opinions, as they should.”

Meledandri continued, “I’m not sure this is the smartest defense, but as a person who has Italian-American heritage, I feel I can make that decision without worrying about offending Italians or Italian-Americans…I think we’re going to be just fine.”

As an entirely independent film festival, Raindance relies on donations and sponsorships in order to provide a platform and space for independent filmmakers. This year, we had the pleasure of partnering with TooFar Media to celebrate the 30th year of independent film in the UK and bring something special to the festival.

Based out of House of Raindance at Genesis Cinema, TooFar Media displayed their array of thought-provoking multimedia stories that combine book, music, art, animation and video. Created by the visionary maverick Rich Shapero, these stories change the way readers experience literature, putting a spin on provocative storytelling for the eyes, ears, and imagination.

The generosity of TooFar Media allowed us to bring to life our Backyard Cinema at Genesis, where we hosted the Raindance industry sessions throughout the festival. These industry sessions brought together filmmakers, industry professionals, students, and lovers of the craft from all over the world and featured informative talks, workshops and masterclasses exploring various aspects of the filmmaking world. The Backyard Cinema was also the location for Live! Ammunition, our regular pitching competition; Boozin’ and Schmoozin’ our networking event; the Open Shorts Night; and screening venue for the four Raindance mavericks.

The Backyard Cinema was the perfect venue for the industry sessions, as it allowed for a hub for filmmakers to network and interact outside of the main cinema, while still remaining connected. It also provided great ambience for the re-screening of the four mavericks – Old Boy, Pulp Fiction, Memento and The Blair Witch Project – enhancing an already unique and unparalleled experience.

We are so grateful to our friends at TooFar Media for helping to provide a platform to connect and celebrate independent filmmakers. We at Raindance recognise the importance of freedom for independent filmmakers, and are so privileged to be able to work with an organisation that shares our passion for independent film.

If you’re looking for something new, we highly recommend TooFar Media, whose multimedia storytelling experience will have you entering a fever dream to the outposts of your imagination. Download the TooFar Media app and experience it for yourself!

President Joe Biden on Tuesday sought to further isolate Russia over its war in Ukraine, as the country’s president, Volodomyr Zelensky, said the recapture of Kherson was like the Allied landings in France on D-Day

‘It was not yet a final point in the fight against evil, but it already determined the entire further course of events. This is exactly what we are feeling now,’ he told G20 leaders gathered in Bali by videolink on Tuesday.

According to AFP, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stayed in his seat to hear the speech – and European leaders stayed in theirs for his remarks – despite threats of walkouts before the summit began.

A world energy crisis, inflation and climate changed were all on the agenda as leaders of the globe’s 20 biggest economies gathered on the Indonesian island.

But no issue cast a darker shadow over the summit than Russia’s war in Ukraine.

‘I am convinced now is the time when the Russian destructive war must and can be stopped,’ Zelensky said, appearing remotely to a conference that Russian President Vladimir Putin skipped.

‘It will save thousands of lives.’

Zelensky delivered his speech after making a dramatic return to Kherson following a Russian military retreat from the regional capital it seized after its February invasion.

Zelensky found good company among leaders who gathered in the luxurious Kempinski hotel, which features dramatic ocean views.

Xi Jinping of China condemned the ‘weaponization’ of food and energy in what observers took to be rare criticism of the way Vladimir Putin was waging the war in Ukraine.

‘We must firmly oppose politicisation, instrumentalization and weaponization of food and energy problems,’ he said.

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo urged leaders to ‘end the war.’

‘If the war does not end, it will be difficult for the world to move forward,’ Widodo said. ‘We should not divide the world into parts.

‘We must not allow the world to fall into another cold war.’

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called Russia a ‘pariah state,’ telling reporters he planned to  ‘unequivocally condemn’ Moscow for its invasion.

Asked how he would handle Lavrov, Sunak told reporters: ‘I’m going to take the opportunity to unequivocally condemn the Russian state and Putin for their abhorrent and illegal war.’

Biden and his allies are trying to pin painfully high food and fuel prices on Vladimir Putin in an effort to build consensus among countries like India and China that have been reluctant to speak out against China.

Eyeing a joint G20 declaration that would condemn the eight-month-old invasion and threats to use nuclear weapons, US and European officials have painted the summit as evidence of Russia’s deepening isolation.

But before the meetings could even begin, the Cambodian prime minister, who hosted Joe Biden and other leaders at the weekend, announced he had tested positive for COVID-19.

A statement posted on the Facebook page of Hun Sen said he was returning home and canceling meetings.

Biden was 30 minutes late leaving his hotel for the summit, and the White House later said he had tested negative.

As he welcomed his guests to the tropical island of Bali, summit host Widodo said: ‘Being responsible means creating not zero-sum situations, being responsible here also means that we must end the war.’

Earlier an American official said the G20 would condemn Russia’s war.

‘I won’t get ahead of the final negotiations but the G20 will make clear that Russia’s war is wreaking havoc for people everywhere and for the global economy as a whole,’ said the official, who spoke about the U.S. view on the summit on condition of anonymity.

‘They will be clear that most G 20 members condemn Russia’s war and the immense suffering of this cause both for Ukrainians and for families in the developing world that are facing food and fuel insecurity as a result.’

However, he was unable to say what form the condemnation would take, whether it would be a communiqué signed by 11 countries or 19, or whether it would be a statement issued by the president of Indonesia, who holds the group’s chair.

The summit is already one short with the departure of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Officials will hope none of his guests at the weekend summit of southeast Asian leaders and others are affected.

Guests included Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang.

A day earlier, Biden cleared his throat and apologized to reporters at a news conference.

‘Excuse me, I have a little cold,’ he said.

It all marked an uncertain start to the summit, where leaders had already decided to skip the traditional ‘family photo’ so that the likes of Biden can avoid having to smile for the camera alongside Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister.

But American officials say the summit will include condemnation of Russia.

The summit is the final leg of Biden’s around-the-world foreign policy blast.

He was in Egypt for three hours on Friday to attend the COP27 summit, before flying to Cambodia for less than 48 to attend the A.S.E.A.N. summit.

On Monday he met Xi for the first time as president. Both leaders appeared maskless with entourages who all wore face coverings.

They clashed over Taiwan, and discussed North Korea’s threat to the region among other issues.

U.S. officials have said Biden’s trip has demonstrated that countries large and small are willing to condemn Russian aggression.

Liam Hemsworth and Girlfriend, Gabriella Brooks, Appear Back Together On The Red Carpet
Media-Mode / SplashNews.com

Finally! Liam Hemsworth and girlfriend Gabriella Brooks have made their red carpet debut as a couple, nearly three years after they began dating.

The Hunger Games star, 32, held the 26-year-old model as they posed for photos at the Sydney premiere of his new film, Poker Face, on Tuesday, November 15. Hemsworth, in a classic black suit, was all smiles as he and Brooks — who opted for a gold, high-necked dress — made their way into the theater. The Most Dangerous Game star also stopped to take photos with his sister-in-law Elsa Pataky, who also appears in the drama.

The premiere marks the couple’s first public appearance together since they were first linked in December 2019.

“He feels more at home with Gabriella than he did with [ex-wife] Miley [Cyrus] and feels like he can be his complete self without any drama,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly in March 2020, just a few months after Hemsworth was first spotted with his fellow Australia native. “Gabriella helped Liam boost his confidence and played an encouraging role in his life after his split with Miley. They are very happy together and it’s comfortable and easy.”

The insider added that Hemsworth’s family was also excited about his new romance. “Liam’s family really likes Gabriella for him. She understands Liam’s values as well as his family’s, which is something that’s very important to him and them,” the source said at the time.

Though the twosome have kept their relationship low-key, a second insider told Us in May 2021 that they were thinking of taking the next step in their relationship. “Liam and Gabriella have been getting serious,” the insider exclusively told Us at the time. “They’re not ones to make it known to the public, but their friends and family sure are in the know about how close they are and how an engagement can be right around the corner.”

The source continued: “Liam looks up to his brothers and would love to one day also have that long-lasting marriage with a partner. He’s ready to be a husband — he just wants to be super confident in his relationship with Gabriella before he gets down on one knee!”

Prior to meeting Brooks, the Witcher star was married to Cyrus, 29, whom he met on the set of The Last Song in 2009. Though Hemsworth proposed to the “We Can’t Stop” singer in 2012, they called it quits in 2013 before reconciling three years later. They quietly tied the knot in December 2018.

“I would say that losing [our house in the California wildfires] changed us much more than getting married changed us,” Cyrus told Vanity Fair in March 2019. “When you experience what we experienced together with someone, it is like glue. You’re the only two people in the world who can understand.” Just five months later, however, multiple sources confirmed to Us that the duo had split after less than one year of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in January 2020.

In December 2020, Cyrus — who is currently dating drummer Maxx Morando — confessed that “there was too much conflict” in their marriage for it to work during an interview on The Howard Stern Show.

“When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone. I don’t get off on drama or fighting,” she said, though she added that she will always have a great deal of affection for Hemsworth. “I really do and did love him very, very, very much and still do, always will.”

Liam Hemsworth and Girlfriend, Gabriella Brooks,

Monday night, Paramount hosted an early screening of Damien Chazelle’s highly anticipated new film “Babylon,” and reactions to the comedic epic set in the Golden Age of Hollywood are as wild and grandiose as the era it depicts.

Out Dec. 23, the film is the Oscar-winning “La La Land” writer-director’s first feature since 2018, and in his own words, his most ambitious project yet. The A-list cast is led by “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” co-stars Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt, as well as newcomer Diego Calva. Olivia Wilde, Flea, Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire and Spike Jonze among many others also star in this fictionalized account of big dreams and bigger debauchery in 1920s Hollywood.

A first trailer, released in September, promised entertainment and chaos in equal measure, with characters narrowly avoiding certain death on movie sets, falling off of balconies at sumptuous parties and snorting lines of coke.

And to some extent, critics’ first reactions mirrored that madness, almost universally deeming it a “mess” – both complimentarily and not.

TheWrap’s Carlos Aguilar captured the anticipation at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, writing “LA’s hottest club tonight is the first screening of BABYLON. Huge line around the block. Here for Diego Calva’s performance.”

“#Babylon is both a sensational celebration of cinema as an art form and a deeply probing condemnation of the mechanics behind said art form,” wrote TheWrap’s Drew Taylor. “Overflowing with razzamatazz – gorgeous cinematography, costumes, design and full of killer performances.”

Critic Scott Menzel acknowledged the film’s ambition, but ultimately called it a “mess.”

“I don’t even know where to begin with this one but the tone is all over the place,” he added, praising Robbie’s efforts but saying that the script “fails her”: “A love letter to cinema that made me hate cinema.”

Yahoo Entertainment’s Kevin Polowy concurred that it was “the strangest, most debaucherous love letter to Hollywood ever,” pointing to “a coked-up Margot Robbie projectile vomiting all over the face of a stuffy old man in a tux” as a symbol of the film’s “chaotic energy and glorious messiness.”

Robbie – who plays a young starlet à la Clara Bow and Joan Crawford – as well as Calva and composer Justin Hurwitz were on the receiving end of most of the praise.

Variety’s Clayton Davis, who enjoyed the film’s first half, said “Babylon” is “likely the internet’s new favorite movie of all-time. Margot Robbie and Justin Hurwitz are your stars.”

Deadline’s Destiny Jackson applauded Calva’s “tender and visceral” acting, adding, “Can’t wait to see him in more stuff.”

Cheat Sheet’s Jeff Nelson had high praise for Chazelle and Hurwitz’s latest collaboration: “Damien Chazelle incorporates his signature musicality and movement throughout,” he wrote. “Justin Hurwitz’s score is one hell of a wall of sound.”

But for every Anne Thompson of IndieWire praising the film as “great fun,” there was a Joshua Rothkopf of EW critiquing it as “pounding and obvious and, finally, uninsightful.”

“Everything about it is borrowed — even down to Tobey Maguire stealing the film as its Alfred Molina,” he added. “A Scorsese coke film by a squeaky clean director.”

After spending most of his presidency promising a border wall that anybody but the U.S. would pay for, Donald Trump never actually saw that plan come to fruition – which is weird to Seth Meyers, since he’s pretty sure that putting a certain senator in a dunk tank would’ve raised the funds needed in about a day.

To kick off his “A Closer Look” segment on Monday night, Meyers once again made fun of Texas Senator Ted Cruz for repeatedly predicting a “red tsunami” in the midterm elections. Playing a supercut of clips in which Cruz used the term, Meyers joked that the senator himself looks like he’s been stuck on an island after a literal tsunami.

“It looks like he’s starring in a direct-to-video remake of ‘Castaway,’ except in Cruz’s version, Wilson kills himself after a week,” Meyers mocked.

From there, Meyers only piled on, saying that Cruz’s true “calling in life” maybe isn’t politics, but just looking like a fool over and over again.

“I got to say, it never gets old watching Ted Cruz get absolutely humiliated,” Meyers said. “The only person who loves it more than I do might be, I don’t know, Ted Cruz? It’s clearly his calling in life and he’s so good at it.”

Then, Meyers offered his simple solution to the twice impeached former president’s problems with getting his border wall built: a carnival game.

“Donald Trump spent his entire presidency trying to get congress to pay for his stupid wall, they could’ve raised that money in one day if they just made Ted Cruz sit in a dunk tank,” he joked. “Do you know how much they could’ve brought? There would’ve been enough money left over for a second, smaller wall to make sure nobody f—ed with the first wall.”

Describing lighting as “a character in the movie,” DP Autumn Durald Arkapaw said her approach to Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was about creating a “texture of grief throughout the film.”

She spoke about her work on the Marvel sequel – which takes place following the death of King T’Challa and additionally provides a moving remembrance of actor Chadwick Boseman, who played T’Challa in 2018’s Black Panther – at a screening of the film at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival in Torun, Poland.

“As far as aesthetic choices for this, because of the importance for [Coogler] of grief, rebirth, migration, and all of this stuff that is so textural and delicate, we decided to de-tune and modify some T-series lenses,” she explained. “And then we used a wider lens for close-ups,” she says of her Panavision lens choices.”

“And then with lighting, I tend to light moodier, and it was embraced here, and Ryan’s very specific in what he wants out of a scene and how he captures the scene and where the cameras should be. For me, light shouldn’t fall everywhere. A character should be coming in and out of light, like it happens in real life,” Durald Arkapaw continued. “And there’s so much texture and drama to a face and if you just don’t shape it, then you don’t feel that emotion. So I think it was just very important for this story.”

She added that they drew inspiration from films Including Alien and Terminator 2: Judgement Day – movies that she described as having VFX with a naturalistic look. “They told you a lot in the darkness just as much as the light.”

The underwater scenes involved a lot of testing to get the desired look. “It was very important to Ryan to have a deep space movie underwater. Things are dark,” the cinematographer said. “It creates more tension, they’re textural, there’s a lot of turbidity, the clarity’s off. When you make a decision like that, that’s brave, everyone has to be on the same page. So we shot everything underwater that we could so we had a reference, and we also shot it dry-for-wet and they took both of those and were able to make something that was very beautiful and felt real – as real as it could with people walking and talking underwater. That was very important to Ryan from the beginning.”

Durald Arkapaw also spoke of her director and the seriousness with which she took Wakanda Forever. This was her first collaboration with Coogler, though her second with Marvel (she was Emmy-nominated earlier this year for Disney+ series Loki). Citing the lengthy production schedule, she said, “We were shooting around 130 days, not originally scheduled like that. … You have to want to shoot this type of movie for your director and the people around you. And [Coogler’s] someone that I would do that for in a heartbeat. And he’s a great leader.

“This film is so important culturally and to so many people and it’s not just another action film,” she added. “So you always have that in mind too. You’re paying homage to an individual but also a character that was beloved. And every person and head of department that came before me worked very hard on the first one. And so, game on, on the second one to do it justice. Also everyone loved [Boseman] on set as well, so you’re always reminded of that. So [this job] was very important for me.”

AK Vs AK

Cast: Anil Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap, Yogita Bihani

Director: Vikramaditya Motwane

Easily one of the finest Hindi films of the year, and definitely the most unique with a mainstream star in it, AK Vs AK has Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap playing themselves amid heightened emotions, surreal moments and twisted plots. It’s different, enjoyable, trippy and a total blur between reality and fiction.

It all starts when an ageing superstar AK (Anil Kapoor) gets into a heated argument with another AK (Anurag Kashyap), a self-obsessed filmmaker, and Kashyap kidnaps Kapoor’s daughter, actress Sonam Kapoor (Sonam Kapoor). Then begins a chase which, in a way, tries to bring forth the paradoxes of a Bollywood star’s life and how they’re expected to ‘act’ even during the depressing times.

Director Vikramaditya Motwane, whose placements of handheld camera with gloomy surround lighting in Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, impressed me a lot, is in an even better mood here as he gets voyeuristic, sensational and under the skin. I forgot to tell you that Motwane has a representative in Yogita Bihani, Kashyap’s assistant in the film, who is recording Kapoor’s moves.

Of course, some restrains have been maintained but Motwane has stretched till he could as Kapoor and Kashyap flaunt self-deprecating humour almost to the verge of unsettling the viewers. For example, Kapoor taunts Bihani of being Kashyap’s girlfriend, or Harshvardhan Kapoor, Anil Kapoor’s son, trying to impress Kashyap with his acting chops in the middle of a crisis.

The other side of a star life has also been expressed as onlookers keep asking Kapoor to do his famous Ram Lakhan steps, a song that came more than three decades ago. The perception of a Bollywood star as the ultimate public influencer has been challenged. It’s so ironic and tragic to see Kapoor dancing to please the audience in the middle of the search for his missing daughter.

There are enough Kashyap jokes as well, like the one about his brother being the most commercially successful filmmaker in the family. At times, it even attempts to look beyond Kashyap’s tough exterior of being an outspoken, perennially angry person. It’s hard to find out how much of this is ‘acting’. Full marks to Motwane for making his actors comfortable enough to make them visit the dark alleys of their subconscious where there is no right and wrong, only the immediate reaction to clear and present danger.

Interestingly, despite the handheld camera recording everything, it’s not exactly a fly on the wall documentation. The filmmaker has quite strong opinions about many developments. Motwane, in no uncertain terms, pushes his characters to make bold comments about Bollywood, insider versus outsider and lack of resources. Needless to say, such ploys add depth to AK Vs AK.

Kapoor has excelled. It’s funny to even write this because he is playing himself but we don’t know how much of this is not script-bound! Kashyap has once again shown his love for unique material, and he has bared all, sometimes literally. While Harshvardhan Kapoor shines in a cameo, Yogita Bihani also fits the bill.

Another lovely film from Motwane’s repertoire. It reaches where mainstream Bollywood films hesitate to go.

AK Vs AKCast: Anil Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap,

(Spoiler alert: The following article discusses the entirety of “All American: Homecoming” Season 2, Episode 5, titled “No More Drama.”)

“All American: Homecoming” creator Nkechi Okoro Carroll has never shied away from depicting the realities that come with the show’s setting at an HBCU, as well as its exploration of what it means to balance marginalized identities with college-specific struggles. These two strands are clearer than ever as they form the backbone of the two-part episodes “We Shall Not Be Moved” and “No More Drama,” which finds Bringston University reeling from a bomb threat and navigating the healing process that comes with being targeted at a space meant to be safe and empowering for Black students.

Co-showrunners and co-executive producers of The CW series, Carroll and Marqui Jackson, drew inspiration from and consulted with current HBCU students to accurately depict the realities of what took place at HBCUs beginning in January, where a series of coordinated threats were made in racist calls to schools like Howard University and Spelman College. While the FBI has stated it has nearly three dozen field offices on the case, no headway has been made in uncovering the origins or perpetrators of the attacks as of August.

“What were the conversations, and what were the discussions, so that we could get it right?” Jackson said of the research that went behind the crafting of the episodes. “It was a very heavy responsibility for all of us, top to bottom, to make sure that we portrayed these episodes in the most authentic light possible.”

Below, Carroll and Jackson go deep into the makings of the episodes, including the importance of destigmatizing Black mental health and depicting joy alongside trauma, as well as that budding romance between Simone (Geffri Hightower) and Lando (Martin Bobb-Semple).

TheWrap: These episodes touch on so many sociopolitical issues facing HBCUs while also showcasing Black joy and skewering that trope of just being strong and pushing through trauma. With bomb threats being a real issue at HBCUs and the FBI lagging on investigations, what made you want to portray this reality in a two-part episode?

NOC: We really pride ourselves on being an authentic depiction of what is happening specifically through the lens of Black youth, and I have a lot of family members, a lot of my friends who attended HBCUs. I was very disturbed by how little coverage the bomb scares at HBCUs were getting, and the reality of what that trauma of having to stand on a basketball court at 2 in the morning for four hours while they clear out your dorm and make sure there’s no threat, has a real impact on our youth. We just felt that we were in a very unique position with the show and this group of friends, to be able to shed light on it, but not just for dramatic TV purposes but more for: A. To raise awareness but to provide a blueprint for our youth, for the adults in their lives, for our communities on ways we can process Black trauma that allow for our community and our youth to heal.

MJ: Even after we started talking about the bomb scare or having a shelter-in-place episode, there was no version of Episode 4 without Episode 5 — you can’t do an event like this and show this kind of trauma without showing the way to release, and to use that opportunity to let people know that it’s OK to talk about the things that happened to you and that there’s breadth and space for all the different opinions. It was always going to be a version of the one-two punch.

One of the most joyous moments is the dodgeball scene, which sees Simone step up for her team and others in trying to help them get a release. Where did that idea come from, and how did you go about the idea that finding happiness in a terrible moment is a form of resilience?

MJ: The notion of Simone trying to do something to help her friends, that by nature, she’s a person that is a caretaker, and her realizing that talking about it wasn’t the way that this group was going to heal. In her thinking about ‘We need to not settle in the emotion of what had happened and engage and live life as if you know it’s not going to be.’ And to find this joy in a very childlike game just felt like the best way, the most cathartic way to deal with this environment. So to get them unified, to get everyone to laugh and into joy, as they’re still waiting to hear what’s going on. It made sense to us because Simone is intuitive to what these people need at that particular time. Thinking about her son, thinking about being away from him and their family, so it also helps her as a character to process the powerlessness of the moment.

NOC: As a mother of two teen Black boys, as we’re processing the trauma of things happening in the world, especially over the last couple years as it relates to Black men in America and I’m looking at my sons growing up, finding ways to, through the trauma, also give them joy, also being like, ‘You know what, we’re gonna get out of the house and we’re gonna throw a frisbee around the park and we’re gonna have a good time and we’re not gonna stop living.’ For me, during 9/11, when I was trapped underground with my colleagues, I think back on how scared and devastated and panicked we were but even in those hours of being down there, there were still moments of joy, of levity, of being able to relate on a human level that allowed someone to laugh or smile through the tears, and the dodgeball game is really just a manifestation of the need for that in the midst of everything else.

Pictured: Mitchell Edwards as Cam Watkins — Photo: The CW

I wanted to ask about Cam, since these two episodes are so heavy for him, and I love that by the end he’s surrounded by his friends, who all go to trauma counseling. How did that storyline come about from beginning to end?

NOC: We’re presidents of the Mitchell Edwards fan club, card-carrying members, we have a uniform — he’s such a gifted, talented actor. We were so excited to give him this role, especially because we felt like processing it through Cam’s character, that he grew up with walls. As a Black man, you gotta fight your way through your pain and getting himself through the journey of realizing, ‘Oh, there is strength in healing as a group, there is strength in turning to my fellow neighbor and being like, ‘I need help.” There’s a lot of stigma around mental health, not just in the Black community. It’s so important, if we all just talked about it more openly, the hope is that people wouldn’t be so scared to ask for help.

I remember once, it was earlier last year, and someone said to me they were in a Black barber shop and they were listening to the patrons talking about the ‘All American’ universe. One of the things that one of the guys said apparently was like, ‘I love ‘All American,’ but Black men just aren’t that vulnerable, I just don’t know why the Black men on that show are so vulnerable.’ But he was like what do you think about that? Why do you write them so vulnerable, because in the community, they’re a little harder. But imagine what it would be like if they weren’t. We’re also writing towards what we can be, and not just what we see constantly. And when I said that they were like, ‘That is deep!’

I had a conversation with Mitchell about these two episodes. I told him, ‘Cam opening up is going to be the conduit to everyone else’s healing,’ that you don’t know what value you have to others by telling your story when you’re struggling. That was a big part of why it needed to be Cam, and why he needed to talk to his friends.

As we talked about, these episodes discuss everything from motherhood to mental health to police brutality, while also balancing the fact that these college kids want to live their lives and be with their friends and explore new romances. Was it challenging to navigate all of these topics in the hour-long format?

MJ: Yes, a very nice challenge to figure out how to weave all of these things together. As we were cracking the episode, we already had continuing storylines from the previous episode that we wanted to talk about: Damon dealing with his birth parents — OK, how does the bomb threat shift how he thinks and what he’s going to do in that moment, and it does. We went through with that lens of a bomb threat [being] an interruption — your life doesn’t just stop because of this big thing, the big thing affects your everyday life. And then also even in the midst of that, making sure that the bomb threat felt present, because we’re not a show where we’re going to see people searching buildings with no bomb. It was really doing the duality of ‘This is how I feel about the bomb threat and this is how it’s affecting the normal thing in my life that’s going on right now.’

I wanted to ask about the new relationship blossoming between Lando and Simone. What can they be to each other, and how might that affect their friend group when it’s revealed?

NOC: Listen, college is messy. [Laughs] You go through an experience like that, there’s a release, there’s a little bit of tomorrow [that] isn’t promised. Now, here’s the problem with that: What may start as a releasing of emotion, can very much get complicated and convoluted, and Simone is in a place where she’s really trying to uncomplicate her life. And so we’re gonna see them go on an interesting journey of a nontraditional start to what I think people were assuming would be this super important relationship, and for them, it’s really more a light, go-with-the-flow type thing, but what’s amazing and interesting and fun for us to work on is Lando has no stake in the game in terms of the friend group. He’s a man of the campus, he speaks his mind, he’s got his own life going on. He’s a little bit more emotionally mature than a lot of our friend group and he’s definitely caught up in the same drama with them since day one of freshman year. And so that outside perspective and his ability to hold a mirror up to Simone without wanting anything from her other than for her to be her best self is a dynamic that she’s not used to. Her most serious relationship, which was Jordan, started off with an unexpected pregnancy, her not being fully truthful about it and Jordan turning into this amazing thing. It was like her first true love. And then the attraction with Damon and the feelings there — it’s all been complicated. And finally, there’s something that kind of isn’t, and she enjoys that and also wants to keep it for herself. We’re gonna see the fun dynamics of that play out over the next few episodes.

Because of the specificity of these real-life plotlines, did the show consult with any mental health experts or HBCU leaders?

MJ: We do have HBCU alums on our staff, so they were able to help us with their experience and able to help us tap into students that are on HBCU campuses right now. A lot of that back and forth, that competition on the tennis court — a lot of that language came from perspectives and things we’ve heard from actual students that are currently students of HBCUs right now. Going to social media and scrolling back and looking at, what are the students saying, back in January and February, when these things were going on and trying to get our finger on the pulse of what was it like to go through this in real time? What were the conversations, and what were the discussions, so that we could get it right? It was a very heavy responsibility for all of us, top to bottom, to make sure that we portrayed these episodes in the most authentic light possible.

David Harbour stars in one of the biggest television shows in the world with Stranger Things, portraying Jim Hopper for four seasons of the series so far. In 2021, the actor made his way to the biggest franchise in the world, starring as Red Guardian in Black Widow. The film served as the first movie in the MCU’s Phase Four, introducing audiences to Harbour’s character alongside Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova.

Now, the pair will star together once again in the upcoming film, Thunderbolts. This time, the movie will close out Phase Five, introducing a new team into the MCU. The characters aren’t exactly heroes; Harbour tells Collider that the group is more like “a bunch of losers or a bunch of guys who can’t quite get it right.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“It’s really cool. We introduce a thing that’s super cool. It’s vital. I’m psyched that Julia Louis Dreyfus’ character is going to be, in a bigger way, explored. One of the things you’ll probably know is that me and Florence’s dynamic will be in there and explored in a way that’s really cool. But all these guys, Sebastian’s character, Wyatt’s character, I just love this mercenary element in the MCU. MCU has always been sort of elevated in a certain way. Captain America, even Iron Man, although he has egos, are always in it for the right reasons or ultimately does the right thing. And I like these guys who are a bunch of losers or a bunch of guys who can’t quite get it right. And so far what they’ve pitched me just feels really cool.”

Harbour tells Collider he hasn’t read a finished script yet, though he knows the film’s overall plot. “It’s not what you’d expect. It incorporates a couple new elements, new things that we have yet to see in the universe,” the actor adds. Fans can see Pugh, Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, and Olga Kurylenko when Thunderbolts arrives in theaters, with a release set for July 26, 2024.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Has Seen an Increased Role in the MCU

Spoiler Warning: Spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Ahead

Julia Louis-Dreyfus made her MCU debut in 2021 with the Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The actress, known for her time on Seinfeld and Veep, is quickly becoming an integral part of Marvel’s connected universe as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

In the Disney+ series, she recruited Wyatt Russell’s character, John Walker, to her team of misfit “heroes.” Her character is similar to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), though the members of the Thunderbolts are far from that in The Avengers. Dreyfus reprised her role in Black Widow, appealing to Florence Pugh’s Yelena, before returning to the MCU in her most significant role yet with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Now, Fontaine is the head of the CIA and in charge of Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), her ex-husband. Her character continues to gain power within high-ranking government positions, meaning the actress will be a massive part of the upcoming Thunderbolts film. Her ultimate motives are still unknown, though Dreyfus has undoubtedly made her mark in the MCU through three appearances so far.

Jimmy Kimmel was delighted on Monday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” about the results of the midterm election, and especially about how a lot of Republicans seem to be blaming Donald Trump for the historical failure of Republicans to muster up a “Red Wave.”

And in his monologue, he first joked that Trump’s weekend was emotional both because of his daughter, Tiffany’s wedding, and the massive failures of his endorsed candidates. “He gave away a daughter and the Senate,” Kimmel joked.

After that, Kimmel ran a fake ad for something that might help Republicans trying to get out from under Trump: A nicotine patch designed to break the addiction to Trump.

“On Saturday, Democrats officially won the senate,” Kimmel noted, thanks to the victory of Democratic candidate Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada. “Her victory gives the Democrats 50 seats, and Vice President Kamala Harris has the tie-breaking vote, should it be needed. It gives them the majority. It also gives her something to do.”

“Many of the candidates Trump endorsed wound up losing. Everything Trump touches dies. Which explains why Melania will live forever. Trump of course is screaming that the election is rigged, especially in Phoenix,” Kimmel continued, quoting a statement Trump posted on his Truth Social website.

“So in Maricopa County they’re at it again. Voting Machines in large numbers didn’t work,’ blah blah blah, ‘They stole the Electron [sic] from Blake Masters. Do Election over again!’ Stealing the electron from Blake Masters sounds like the plot of the next ‘Avengers’ movie,” Kimmel joked.

Then Kimmel brought up the last remaining Senate context — the runoff scheduled for next month in Georgia between Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock. Kimmel noted that Walker is, in particular, strongly supported by “sweet old woman” Lindsey Graham. This brought him to the fake ad.

“Graham “is something else. I wonder if he’ll be in Florida tomorrow,” Kimmel began. “You know that Trump has announced that he’s going to announce that he’s running for president tomorrow. Not too many of his fellow Republicans seem that jazzed about it, they tried to get him to delay the announcement, he said no. Many of them blame Trump for what happened in the midterms, they seem him as a liability going forward.”

“But you know, we’ve heard this before. The question now is, are Republicans finally ready to break away from Donald Trump for good? And if they are, there’s help,” at which point the fake ad for a product called “Nicodump DT” played.

“Do you have a Donald Trump problem that you just can’t seem to shake? You wish it would go away. But when you try to quit,” the ad said as video of Lindsey Graham appearing to disavow Trump after the Jan. 6 attack, “it never seems to last.” This was followed by video of Graham once again sucking up to Trump.

The ad promises the patch releases a patented concoction of “lithium, fried chicken and libtard tears, to help curb your appetite for Trump and start living life again.”

“Ask your doctor — if you believe in doctors — about Nicodump DT. It’s time to move on,” the fake ad concluded. Watch the whole monologue above.

The Great Basin is a significant part of the U.S., even if its towns are few and far between. It’s a place of ranchers, immigrant workers, and small-town living. The region, comprising a vast area of desert land in Nevada, is substantially important because of the water that exists deep under the ground resting in the basin, which neighboring Las Vegas needs and most likely will get, which will change life in these parts forever. Director Chivas DeVinck spotlights this sleepy and eccentric eastern Nevada world’s dailiness and societal and political issues in The Great Basin.

The documentary, offering insights into an almost forgotten way of life, launches with a curious opening following a group of people on a guided trip through a cave system. Offering a bit of irony, it’s a dark place that survives without light and is unknown, much like the Great Basin and its people who “live on the other side of nowhere.” Using several documentary filming styles, including cinema verité, up close and personal discussions, and interviews, DeVinck captures the variety of people who dwell in the Great Basin.

The filmmaker offers a 360 view of an area living without interruption, almost as if they were on the outside, completely cut off from a fast-paced, ever-changing world. Whether it is Native American residents providing an account of their homeland or third-person voyeurism to show the inside workings of a brothel, little is left to the imagination in garnering an understanding of how people live and function in this part of the world. Sagebrush-covered mountains and land are home to sheep and cattle ranchers whose conservative views exist to keep their operations working.

“…eccentric eastern Nevada world’s dailiness and societal and political issues…”

The Great Basin deftly juxtaposes this with small towns full of casinos and legitimate brothels where Christians are offering gifts and pamphlets to discover and find God. Men chat on street corners, and others work daily, like a butcher chopping and packaging meat or a man unloading change from slot machines. A county commission meeting about dog licenses that brings about a tearful discussion is as severe as the mounting water pillage of Las Vegas. The director’s observations of these people are intimate and personal.

For those who have never been on U.S. 50 from Ely, Nevada, known as the “Loneliest Road” in America, this two-lane highway offers a certain beauty for this wide-open country, especially for the authentic folks in this film who make their home in Ely and White Pine County. The majesty of the region is beautifully lensed, as the cinematography makes even the isolated territory look inviting.

DeVinck’s unique style and approach to The Great Basin and its various subject matters are not preachy or one-sided. What shows up is pure and mighty, like its musical score that echoes a bit of Phillip Glass. However, it is not as monotone in seriousness and drama but is as simple in structure. This is not a complicated, glossy documentary, but it will exist as a fascinating historical document when this way of life no longer exists.

Longtime media executives David Levy and Chris Weil are launching a marketing agency alongside Horizon Media, one aimed at capitalizing on the shift they see already underway for sports advertising.

Horizon Sports & Experiences (HS&E) plans to focus on marketing beyond TV commercials and in-stadium signage, which Levy called “table stakes.” Instead, it will look to create opportunities around new events, IP creation and experiential marketing — both in the physical world and in the metaverse.

Levy, former president of Turner Broadcasting, and Weil, chairman of Momentum Worldwide, will serve as co-CEOs and equity partners, alongside Horizon Media.

“It’s not going to be your standard 30-second TV spots,” Levy told Sportico in an interview. “And the timing could not be better. Private equity firms are investing heavily into sports franchises, new leagues are forming and NIL rights are here. This space is growing so fast, and they’re going to need companies like ourselves.”

The group won’t be starting from scratch. It’s absorbing parts of the Horizon portfolio, alongside more than 30 employees and an existing client base. Horizon’s newly-launched metaverse consultancy Chapter & Verse will be a part of the HS&E business, as will Horizon’s lifestyle agency Scout Sports and Entertainment. Michael Neuman, who runs Scout, will become an executive vice president at HS&E.

The agency’s goal is to combine the expertise of its three backers — Levy in content creation and sales, Weil inexperiential marketing, and Horizon CEO and founder Bill Koenigsberg in brand building. As an example of the type of things HS&E might pursue, Levy mentioned The Match, the golf franchise he helped create at Turner. The Match launched in 2018 using new IP, with media partners, corporate sponsors and buy-in from the sport’s biggest stars. Its seventh iteration will take place next month.

Levy, who founded sports consulting and investing firm Back Nine Ventures, spent about three decades at Turner parent Time Warner, where he ran the company’s portfolio of networks, ad sales and distribution. He also oversaw Turner Sports from 2003 until his departure in 2019. He’s currently chairman of Genius Sports and will stay on in that role.

Weil spent two decades as chair and CEO of Momentum until his recent departure. In that role the agency grew from two offices to 30 global locations, eventually managing more than $5 billion in sponsorship assets. He said in a statement that the industry needs an agency that can mix traditional marketing work with new opportunities in Web3, a catchall term for the internet’s decentralized future, including blockchain technology.

“Given fundamental shifts in consumer attitudes and behaviors that are continuing to drive the evolution of brand experience — both physical and digital — I believe that Web3 is going to be the ‘experience Web,’” Weil said. “So, we’re creating a company that will be at the forefront of monetizing Web3 in this blended physical-digital world.”

HS&E’s launch dovetails with Horizon’s recent expansion. In the past few months the company launched a consulting firm called Green Thread, and purchased a controlling stake in digital experiences agency First Tube Media, which will work closely with HS&E.

EXCLUSIVE: Deadline has an exclusive clip from What Remains — a murder mystery thriller marking the final film completed by Anne Heche. The feature from writer-director Nathan Scoggins will be released in theaters and on digital by Gravitas Ventures on December 2nd.

What Remains follows a recently paroled convict (Kellan Lutz) who returns to the small town where he murdered the wife of the local pastor (Cress Williams), who is forced to reconcile his pain and anger with forgiveness. The local sheriff (Heche) at the same time investigates another mysterious homicide which may be related.

World premiering at the 2022 Austin Film Festival in October, What Remains also stars Marcus Gladney Jr. (The Underground Railroad), Stelio Savante (The Chosen) and Juliana Destefano (Shark Season). Pic was produced by Ralph Winter, with Korey Scott Pollard, Sean B. Doherty, Savante and Scoggins serving as exec producers, and Doherty’s Sharpened Iron Studios co-financing.

Heche was an Emmy nominee known for her work on series like All Rise and in films like Donnie Brasco, who died on August 11 — being declared brain dead, after suffering critical injuries in a number of motor vehicle collisions in Los Angeles on August 5. She was 53. “We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend,” her family and friends said in a statement at the time. “Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy. Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact.”

While there are still a number of upcoming projects featuring Heche that have yet to be released, including the film Supercell with Alec Baldwin and Skeet Ulrich and HBO’s series The Idol from A24 Television, What Remains was the last film she worked on, having completed production last October. The late actress’s memoir Call Anne for Viva Editions/Simon & Schuster will be released in January.

EXCLUSIVE: Deadline has an exclusive clip from

UPDATED, 5:06 PM: “He knew something was off when we were at the SAG Awards and the way Harvey looked at me,” Jennifer Siebel Newsom told defense lawyer Mark Werkman, jurors and onlookers Monday during her testimony at Harvey Weinstein’s Los Angeels rape trial, discussing her husband and then California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s knowledge by 2017 of the producer’s alleged assault of her several years beforehand.

“I dropped hints along the way,” California’s First Partner added in what was often emotional, tearful and graphic testimony.

Scrutinized by Werkman about when and how she informed Newsom of the alleged rape by Weinstein in his suite at the Peninsula Hotel more than 17 years ago, Siebel Newsom was overcome by sobs at several points during her time on the stand. Centering on the political connections of frequent big-bucks contributor Weinstein over the decades to various high-profile Democrats, the defense lawyer remained oblivious to the witness’ anguish. “Well, is that just politics, that you just take money from someone who has done something despicable to your wife unless everybody finds out about it?” Werkman said in his cross-examination this afternoon.

Identified as Jane Doe #4 in Weinstein’s West Coast trial, Siebel Newsom revealed her true name last month ahead of her testimony in Judge Lisa Lench’s downtown courtroom. Pilloried on the stand today when the defense had its turn, Siebel Newsom is expected to be back for more testimony Tuesday in what could be the closing days of this trial.

With Weinstein facing almost a dozen sex-crimes charges and looking at 140 years maximum behind bars if found guilty, sources on both sides have expressed that Siebel Newsom’s testimony could prove pivotal in the case.

Earlier in the day, after initially returning from the lunch break, the witness described in vivid detail going to meet Weinstein in the Beverly Hills hotel when she was a young and unmarried filmmaker/actress charmed by the attention the then-mogul gave her. “I was confused,” Siebel Newsom explained when she was contacted suddenly by a Weinstein assistant and told their meeting would be in the producer’s suite. “I was a little hesitant. I was expecting to meet him where the noise and the buzz was and there was all this conversation. I was just confused, and I didn’t know what to do.”

Let into Weinstein’s “opulent” suite by an assistant, Siebel Newsom stated how things quickly took a turn for the worse and the deadly. Called to join Weinstein in the bathroom, she found him masturbating. Overcome and admitting she found some memories of the incident “confusing,” the witness told Deputy DA Marlene Martinez and the court how Weinstein explained what was happening to her. “He was asserting himself and tried to tell me that he, he mentioned several actresses names, he tried to tell me that this was the industry, and in a way like threaten me.”

Allegedly hauling her into the suite’s main bedroom, Weinstein began assaulting her again, putting his fingers inside her, the witness said.

“He knows this is not normal, he knows this is not consent,” Siebel Newsom asserted in a loud voice with Weinstein sitting mere feet away at the defense table with his lawyers.

“I could tell he just needed, he was so determined, just so scary, just all about him and his pleasure, his need for satisfaction, so I just did it to make it stop,” she added of Weinstein, who tried putting his “weird and messed up” penis inside her and having non-consensual sex with her and then performing forced cunnilingus on her. “Oh, I just made some noises to get him to ejaculate faster,” Siebel Newsom said of then masturbating Weinstein.

“There was silence on my part,” Siebel Newsom told the court after Weinstein ejaculated. “I just remember not having words. I just wanted to get the f*ck out of there, pardon my language,” she said, crying again.

“I just remember being shocked by everything,” Siebel Newsom said of the small talk Weinstein made afterwards and her leaving his suite. “It was like the Twilight Zone, I just walked down this hallway it felt like forever,” she noted. “It was like an out-of-body experience. I just remember I got my car at the valet.”

Siebel Newsom admitted on the stand that she did not go to police after the incident, a decision she indicated was made in part because of a bad experience she had with law enforcement after her sibling’s death years before. She also admitted she did have personal and political contact with Weinstein in the years since the alleged assault – a fact the defense will surely continue to emphasize in questioning Tuesday.

PREVIOUSLY, 12:27 PM: “He was really focused on telling me I was special, and I was different,” Jennifer Siebel Newsom told a downtown Los Angeles jury Monday of her first meeting with Harvey Weinstein.

“He was like the kingmaker, he was the top of the industry,” she said on the stand about encountering Weinstein in 2005 at the Toronto Film Festival. “I was a working actress, I had little roles, guest-starring roles on TV shows and films, and I was working on some short films, I’d been in two features … but they were small roles.”

Expected to continue her testimony this afternoon, Siebel Newsom broke down in tears at one point this morning when asked to point out Weinstein in the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center courtroom. With two security guards in the front row of Judge Lisa Lench’s courtroom, Siebel Newsom took the stand to questions from Deputy L.A. County D.A. Marlene Martinez after several other witness had testified Monday.

Amanda Edwards/Getty Images

Having first revealed in late 2017 the interaction she had with Weinstein years beforehand, Siebel Newsom went public via her lawyer on October 10 that she was Jane Doe #4 in the incarcerated producer’s L.A. trial. “Like many other women, my client was sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein at a purported business meeting that turned out to be a trap,” attorney Elizabeth Fegan said in a statement. “She intends to testify at his trial in order to seek some measure of justice for survivors, and as part of her life’s work to improve the lives of women.”

Siebel Newsom’s testimony comes after her husband, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, widely seen as a potential candidate for U.S. president at some point, was easily reelected last week.

Weinstein is facing grand jury indictments of four counts of rape, four counts of forcible oral copulation, one count of sexual penetration by use of force, plus one count of sexual battery by restraint and sexual battery in incidents involving five women in L.A. County from 2004 to 2013. Sentenced to 23 years in prison by a Manhattan jury in March 2020 for multiple sex crimes, and now on appeal, the 70-year old Weinstein faces 140 years imprisonment if found guilty in L.A.

In his opening statement in the trial last month, Weinstein lawyer Mark Werkman dismissed the Siebel Newsom, the First Partner of California, as no more than “just another bimbo who slept with Harvey Weinstein to get ahead in Hollywood” if she hadn’t married now-Gov. Newsom. As testimony from other Jane Does and witness commenced last month in the West Coast trial, information appeared in the press of contributions Weinstein made to Newsom’s various campaigns over the years, as well as encounters one-time filmmaker and actress Siebel Newsom — who married Newsom in 2008 when he was mayor of San Francisco — and her husband had with Weinstein after the alleged assault in late 2004-early 2005 in L.A.

In late October, Lench curtailed the defense’s ability to question Siebel Newsom about her 2007 communication with Weinstein over an affair her then-boyfriend Newsom had with a campaign aide’s spouse. The judge also limited the prosecution’s reach to ask about texts Siebel Newsom had with Louisette Geiss in 2015 about Weinstein and comments about former First Daughter Malia Obama’s internship at the Weinstein Co. in early 2017.

Weinstein’s trial is expected to run until the end of the month before the case goes to the jury.

Danai Gurira took her “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” prep seriously.

Gurira, who returns as General Okoye for the MCU film, trained with an Olympic swimming coach for the water sequences in the superhero movie. “Wakanda Forever” includes a trip to the underwater empire Talokan, led by Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia), and multiple underwater fight scenes.

“As I’m sure you’ve seen in the previews, there’s a little bit of water in this movie,” Gurira said in a The Cut cover story. “So when I heard that, I hadn’t read the script, but I went and found this Olympic-trainer swimming coach. I was like, ‘Teach me everything.’”

Gurira continued, “It wasn’t really necessary to go in like that, but I went all in. It was really fun to really work at improving my stroke and to see improvement and transformation in my technique and in my speed. I sent a little video to [director] Ryan [Coogler], and he was in shock. He was like, ‘What the hell?’”

Gurira, who used to swim competitively as a child, addressed the racial stereotype around swimming.

“I’m getting into this aspect of the fact that there’s an issue with Black kids and swimming. I saw the stat that a Black child is five times more likely to drown than a white child, and that got me,” the “Walking Dead” star said. “I just got more interested in trying to bring awareness to it, and I’ll be looking into that more. There’s a lot that goes into the fact that we as Black folks don’t often get that skill, but it is a very important skill and people lose their lives around it when they don’t have to.”

Gurira added, “I tried to help a couple of my friends learn to swim — grown-ass women like me. It’s interesting. There’s sometimes a panic around water. It takes effort. For a lot of people, if their family doesn’t do it, they end up not doing it. It’s a whole thing. That stat really hit me hard.”

Director Coogler previously told Variety that he learned how to swim to direct “Wakanda Forever.”

“A lot of us were raised to have fear of water,” Coogler said. “If the camera’s in the water, actors are in the water, I’ve got to be in there too. I had to figure out how to swim, so I could direct this movie.”

Gurira’s co-star Angela Bassett, who plays Queen Ramonda in the films, noted that “Black girls have this history with water and their hair,” and Coogler asked if she would feel comfortable putting her head in water for a key scene.

“Some of us can’t swim all that well, because it’s going to mess up that press and curl. It’s a whole thing,” Bassett said, noting that she could swim “a little bit.”

Pink will hit the stage at the 2022 American Music Awards to pay tribute to the late singer-actress Olivia Newton-John.

Pink, who had previously been announced as a performer at the Nov. 20 show, will take the stage for a second time with a performance dedicated to the life and career of 10-time AMA winner Newton-John. Newton-John died in August after a yearslong battle with breast cancer.

In addition, a slew of other performers were revealed Monday. Stevie Wonder will be joined by Charlie Puth and Ari Lennox for a tribute to Lionel Richie, previously announced as this year’s Icon Award recipient. They will sing a medley of Richie’s hit songs.

David Guetta and Bebe Rexha will make their U.S. television performance debut of their hit “I’m Good (Blue).”

A trio of artists will make their debuts on the AMA stage: rapper GloRilla; Dove Cameron; who will perform “Boyfriend”; and Anitta, who will sing two of her recent hits, “Lobby” and “Envolver.”

And rapper Lil Baby will perform a medley of his hits “California Breeze” and “In a Minute.”

These performers join previously announced artists Carrie Underwood, Imagine Dragons, JID, Yola and house DJ D-Nice.

The awards, which are voted on by fans, will be handed out Nov. 20 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony, hosted by Wayne Brady, will air on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu.

The 2022 AMAs are produced by dick clark productions and Jesse Collins Entertainment. Collins is showrunner and executive producer. Dionne Harmon, Jeannae Rouzan-Clay and Larry Klein also executive produce.

In a curiously meta move that calls to mind Netflix making a sitcom about the last Blockbuster, Apple TV+ has won the rights to a new comedy series from Seth Rogen about “a legacy Hollywood movie studio trying to survive in a world where it is increasingly difficult for art and commerce to live together.” Again: Apple is doing this. The company that only (relatively) recently got into the streaming game and is very much not a “legacy Hollywood movie studio” but certainly does have some experience with trying to find a way for “art and commerce to live together” since they make movies and TV shows and sell movies and TV shows.

But anyway, Deadline says the untitled show will star and be executive produced, directed, and co-written by Seth Rogen, with the other writers being Rogen’s longtime producing partner Evan Goldberg and Veep’s Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory. We’re picturing something like Mythic Quest but about a movie studio, but it’s hard to guess what the tone will be like until Apple puts out more information. After all, Rogen and Goldberg are also behind The Boys and Sausage Party (plus the upcoming Sausage Party TV show), both of which are pretty different despite (at least partially) being comedies.

Either way, this will be good Seth Rogen news for big Seth Rogen fans, since he’s going to be all over this thing. Plus, it means getting more Seth Rogen on TV, which has been his new thing for the last few years—last year, he played Santa in HBO Max’s Santa Inc., and this year he appeared in (and produced) Pam & Tommy. As for the movies, he’s in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans and did the voice of Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

For those of us in Los Angeles, it has just started to feel like fall – with the cold snap turning leaves into vibrant yellow, orange, and red, and boots season is upon us again. October has gone by in a flash: amidst the frenetic pace of preparing and producing the 2022 Fi Forum – four days of jam-packed panels, case studies, workshops, and networking events – we also hosted no fewer than ten screenings under the Film Independent Presents series – both virtual and in theaters.

In keeping with Film Independent’s ongoing mission to champion and amplify diverse voices in cinema, our members enjoyed five documentaries and five narrative films spanning genres including horror, thriller, psychological drama, and even a 13th century period piece!

To catch you up on all of them, here is a list of all the post-screening Q&As with each project’s filmmakers. As awards season continues to heat up, we have many more screenings coming up. Please check out the schedule for November’s Film Independent Presents lineup – we hope to see you there!

THE JANES

Guests of honor: Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes (directors) and Diane Stevens (documentary subject); moderated by Jenn Wilson (Senior Programmer, Film Independent)

Synopsis: The Janes tells the story of a group of unlikely outlaws. Defying the state legislature that outlawed abortion, the Catholic church that condemned it, and the Chicago mob that was profiting from it, the members of Jane risked their personal and professional lives to help women in need. In the pre-Roe v. Wade era – a time when abortion was a crime in most states and even circulating information about it was a felony in Illinois – the Janes provided low-cost and free abortions to an estimated 11,000 women.

What critics are saying: “Lessin (Trouble the Water) and Pildes (a producer of Jane Fonda in Five Acts) shape a vibrant, thoughtful communal story from the voices they’ve gathered, complementary and sometimes contradictory. The film’s last segment is especially robust and involving as they delve into the matter of the raid that led to the arrest of seven collective members and the possibility of 110-year sentences. Why and how their high-powered (female) attorney used a stalling strategy is a happy convergence of historical events.” Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter

NAVALNY

Guests of honor: Daniel Roher (director) and Maria Pevchikh (executive producer); moderated by Josh Welsh (President, Film Independent)

Synopsis: Navalny follows Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent in August 2020 during an assassination attempt. Recovery was painful and took months, after which, he still decided to return home.

What critics are saying: “Even with those latest grim developments, this documentary, directed by the Canadian filmmaker Daniel Roher (“Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band”), plays like a crowd-pleaser, a profile of a politician with the unflagging courage to swim against a rising totalitarian tide. It helps that Navalny has a movie star’s charisma and wit. In the first moments, Navalny implores Roher to make the film a thriller. If he’s killed, Navalny explains, then Roher has permission to make a boring memorial.” Ben Kenigsberg, The New York Times

LADY CHATTERLEY’S LOVER

Guests of honor: Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (director); moderated by Josh Welsh (President, Film Independent)

Synopsis: Based on the classic D.H. Lawrence novel, we follow the life of Lady Chatterley – a woman born to a life of wealth and privilege – who soon finds herself married to a man that she eventually falls out of love with. Lady Chatterley engages in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate, discovering more desire and intimacy than she thought possible. When she realizes that she has fallen heart and soul, she breaks all traditions of the day and seeks happiness with the man she loves.

What critics are saying: “…. a handsome introduction to this feminine saga of sexual awakening, laced with both something old and something new and plenty of frank, tastefully choreographed and actually steamy eroticism dearly missed in today’s increasingly sterile mainstream cinema.” Tomris Laffly, TheWrap

THE RETURN OF TANYA TUCKER – FEATURING BRANDI CARLILE

Guests of honor: Kathlyn Horan (writer/director); moderated by Jenn Wilson (Senior Programmer, Film Independent)

Synopsis: The Return of Tanya Tucker follows Tanya’s richly creative, utterly captivating, bumpy ride back to the top as Brandi Carlile encourages her to push past her fears to create a new sound and reach a new audience. The writing, the experimenting, and refining of this new music mixes with all that came before – using rare archival footage and photographs to delve into Tanya’s history, beginning in a single wide trailer in Seminole, Texas. A rousing exploration of an unexpected friendship built on the joy of a perfectly timed creative collaboration.

What critics are saying: “Mostly The Return is about listening to great music getting made by two women representing two generations of country music – Carlile is 41 – who genuinely seem to respect each other, and who have obvious talent.” Michael O’Sullivan, The Washington Post

WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR

Guests of honor: Jane Schoenbrun (director) and Anna Cobb (actor); moderated by Jenn Wilson (Senior Programmer, Film Independent)

Synopsis: A teenage girl joins the World’s Fair challenge and becomes immersed in “the internet’s scariest online horror game.

What critics are saying: “It’s one part of a larger phenomenon known as the “creepypasta” – a form of collective online storytelling that blurs the line between reality and fiction. We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, the directorial debut of Jane Schoenbrun, is a film about creepypastas that also feels like it could be a creepypasta itself, unfurling with the same unhurried dread.” Clarisse Loughrey, The Independent

CATHERINE CALLED BIRDY

Guests of honor: Lena Dunham (director); moderated by Jenn Wilson (Senior Programmer, Film Independent)

Synopsis: The year? 1290. In the Medieval English village of Stonebridge, Lord Rollo sees his daughter as his path out of financial ruin by marrying her off to a wealthy man for money and land. But Birdy, like all great teen heroines, is spirited, clever and adventurous – and ready to put off any suitor in increasingly ingenious ways. Her imagination, defiance and deep belief in her own right to independence put her on a collision course with her parents. When the most vile suitor of all arrives, they are presented with the ultimate test of love for their daughter.

What critics are saying: “If anything, the melding of broad, bawdy humor and outrage, of gutbusting and throat-clearing, complements each other beautifully.” David Fear, Rolling Stone

THE FASTEST WOMAN ON EARTH

Guests of honor: Graham Suorsa and Christopher Otwell (directors); moderated by Jenn Wilson (Senior Programmer, Film Independent)

Synopsis: Filmed over seven years, The Fastest Woman on Earth chronicles the extraordinary life of professional racer and TV personality Jessi Combs. Approached by an all-male team of aviation enthusiasts to be the lead driver of a custom car built from a repurposed fighter jet, Jessi’s dream of breaking land speed records is suddenly within reach – but at what cost?

What critics are saying: “ …. is a mix of triumph and tragedy, with no small amount of foreshadowing …. And if you are up to speed on “The Fastest Woman on Earth,” it’s still an engaging, moving and even shocking documentary.” John Anderson, The Wall Street Journal

DESCENDANT

Guests of honor: Margaret Brown (writer/director), Essie Chambers and Kyle Martin (producers); moderated by Josh Welsh (President, Film Independent)

About: Descendants of the survivors from The Clotilda celebrate their heritage and take command of their legacy, as the discovery of the remains of the last known slave ship to arrive in the United States offers them a tangible link to their ancestors.

What critics are saying: “If you’ve ever wondered what “holding space” looks like in practice, the director Margaret Brown’s deeply attentive documentary, Descendant provides moving examples.” Lisa Kennedy, The New York Times

CAUSEWAY

Guests of honor: Lila Neugebauer (director) and Justine Ciarrocchi (producer); moderated by Jenelle Riley (Deputy Awards & Features Editor, Variety)

About: An engineer in the Army deployed in Afghanistan, Lynsey returns home to New Orleans after suffering TBI resulting from an IED explosion in the field. As she works hard to regain her physical and mental abilities – relearning to walk, bathe, use her hands, etc. – she comes across mechanic James, with whom she bonds over their traumatic pasts, as he had lost a leg in a car accident.

What critics are saying: “Neugebauer, making her feature debut following work in series such as the Netflix production Maid, opts for an unshowy realism that emphasizes the chewiness of the actors’ work.” Wendy Ide, The Guardian

WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY

Guests of honor: Eric Appel (director); moderated by producer Mike Farah (CEO, Funny or Die)

About: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story explores every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like “Eat It” and “Like a Surgeon” to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle. Exclusively on The Roku Channel.

What critics are saying: “Daniel Radcliffe is fully liberated and hugely entertaining as Yankovic in a film that abandons recognizable reality for crackpot set pieces that imagine the biographical origins of hits such as Eat It, Another One Rides the Bus and Like a Surgeon.” Kevin Maher, The Times

BuzzFeed Inc. saw user engagement drop by 32 percent during the third quarter as ad revenue remained flat compared to the previous year.

In total, users spent 151 million hours with BuzzFeed’s content across the company’s owned and operated sites, YouTube and Apple News. Total revenue for the quarter hit $103.7 million, representing a 15 percent year-over-year increase — beating company forecasts of a 4 to 8 percent yearly increase — but a slight quarterly decline.

Ad revenue, which has taken a hit across the digital advertising–reliant industry as marketers contend with smaller ad budgets, amounted to $50.4 million during Q3.

To close out the year, BuzzFeed has set Q4 revenue expectations between $129 to $134 million while  adjusted EBITDA is expected to land between $12.5 to $17.5 million.

“Looking ahead, we are on pace to deliver our strongest performance of the year in the fourth quarter. As we continue to navigate the dual dynamics of the rapid rise of short-form vertical video and an uncertain macroeconomic environment, we are focused on preserving cash and leveraging a deep understanding of our audience to direct resources toward the opportunities with the highest potential for monetization,” BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti said in announcing the company’s Q3 earnings.

The media company last reported Q2 revenue at $106.8 million and noted that total time spent by users dropped by 19 percent, compared to the previous year, down to 154 million hours. BuzzFeed also said it had spent roughly $5.3 million in restructuring costs as of the end of June, in large part due to layoffs at HuffPost and voluntary buyouts and departures at BuzzFeed News.

BuzzFeed is set to host ComplexCon, a streetwear-focused festival and marketplace, in Long Beach this weekend.

It’s been over a decade since Sarah Polley released a film, but now she is finally back with her adaptation of Miriam Toews’ 2018 book “Women Talking.” The movie follows a community of Mennonite women who have been drugged and raped. When they gather to discuss their future, they must determine whether to stay and fight, or try to leave safely.

Speaking at Variety’s Artisans Screening Series, Polley told senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay, “What’s much more important in terms of this story, is the impact that those events have on the women, not the events themselves.” She continued, “I was very interested in the aftermath and that moment where it’s very hard to remember the details of a situation because you’ve been so traumatized.”

Polley was joined by her collaborators on the film, cinematographer Luc Montpellier, production designer Peter Cosco, costume designer Quita Alfred and editors Christopher Donaldson and Roslyn Kalloo.

When it came to cutting those moments as the women are having this conversation about their future, Donaldson says, “There was sort of a contradictory impulse in the pacing and in the structure, which is the women have to flee, but they also have to leave. We had to find a language in the performances and in the structure of the film that sort of reflected both of those things without one, the audience going, ‘Stop talking and leave,’ and then the audience also saying, ‘No, they haven’t finished, they don’t know why they’re leaving yet. They can’t.’”

For Donaldson, it was working to distill the performance and dialogue, but to keep the story moving. He adds, “It was important to Sarah that they have to keep coming back to ideas.”

Kalloo added that the idea of following 10 characters in a single location was quite challenging.

Polley said she had been working with Montpellier since the beginning of her career, and the two spent many months discussing the visual language of the film. Montpellier says, “Sarah has this great thing where she rewrote the script in beat form with all the turning points in the film so that we could really track where shifts were happening and when characters were changing their minds.”

Working with a desaturated color palette, Alfred sourced authentic fabrics in Southern Manitoba from Mennonite suppliers. Once she had them in hand, she sent them out to Montpellier for camera tests.

Alfred’s other task was subtly differentiating the characters with such a limited palette. Says Alfred, “I found the easiest way to make choices was to divide the families and assign not so many colors to the families but moods.”

With Scarface Janz (Frances McDormand) and her family, Alfred says, “That’s where the constriction was the most in my mind. So, I had dried blood, rust and immovable images.”

Recently graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris, French painter Apolonia Sokol heads to the U.S. in pursuit of the bigger picture. She finds it, after a fashion, as a wealthy collector commissions her to churn out 10 canvases a month. It’s an industrial approach to art that docmaker Lea Glob views skeptically: “Why only buy the art when it’s so much cheaper to buy the artist?” she asks. In a less cynical way, however, Glob’s unusual, compelling new film “Apolonia, Apolonia” invests grandly in Sokol herself, making the artist a kind of living installation that Glob’s camera intimately observes over the course of 13 years. Sokol’s paintings, slightly distorted large-scale portraits of human subjects in eerie states of repose, are striking, but never quite as intriguing as their restless, endlessly self-doubting creator.

As a portrait of the artist as a young woman, then, “Apolonia, Apolonia” is already layered and substantial, pondering as it does matters of individual creative principle, the predominantly patriarchal functions of critique and patronage and the economic reality of millennial bohemianism in its leisurely but gradually rewarding two-hour running time. But Glob, the Danish director who had a sizeable 2015 festival hit with the similarly ambitious, artistry-centered “Olmo and the Seagull,” complicates matters further still, weaving her own experience as a creator, feminist and, finally, mother into her subject’s defiant trajectory. Some might find the inward focus of the film’s concluding stages an indulgence too far, but this IDFA competition entry — produced for HBO Max in Europe — remains an impressively idiosyncratic, far-reaching work, assured of further festival play and specialist arthouse attention.

If Sokol is sometimes unconfident regarding her own artist’s gaze, she is never shy in the face of a camera. Before Glob’s consistently affectionate lens, she’ll either vamp gleefully or settle into her most natural, unfiltered self, never quite forgetting she’s being watched but fully at ease with the attention. That makes her an ideal focal point for a documentary, and you can see why Glob, by her own onscreen admission, never quite knew when to put the camera down, to call time on a personal narrative that never reaches a neat resolution or resting point. (Why would it? Sokol isn’t yet 35.) And if she ultimately turned her talents toward visual art, Sokol is a born performer too: The daughter of two actors, she was raised in the scruffy independent Paris theater that, as Glob first encounters her in 2009, she still calls home.

While she completes her studies in the contrastingly posh Beaux-Arts, Sokol turns the theater into a makeshift hostel and community hub for a wide variety of friends, fellow artists and adrift activists — one of whom, asylum-seeking Ukrainian feminist Oksana Shachko, becomes the closest of friends with the seemingly polysexual Sokol, their relationship giving this sprawling film its hefty emotional anchor. Sokol’s art thrives off the diversity and energy of her highly sociable home life; when the theater is eventually repossessed and she’s forced to share a small apartment with her mother and Oksana, her work in turn appears to lose some of that dynamism. She graduates, though not with distinction, and is stung by her professors’ remarks that her paintings are less interesting than her personality.

They wouldn’t tell a male student that, she fumes, probably correctly. Yet it does seem that her work is missing some of her exuberantly chaotic approach to life, and “Apolonia, Apolonia” enters its most tense, fascinating phase as she seeks that X-factor far from home — first in New York and then in Los Angeles, where she catches the eye of controversial South African super-collector Stefan Simchowitz (dubbed the art world’s “patron Satan” by the New York Times), who puts her to work with little regard for her process, and is cool in his appreciation of the results. For the first time, Sokol is shown a potentially prolific career path as an artist. Of course, it all but freezes up her inspiration.

What does she want? Determined to forge her own path, and vocally averse to starting a family, Sokol remains unsure as she charges into her thirties, hopping from country to country before settling, atb least for a time, on home again. Watching her, however, appears to unlock the filmmaker’s own personal and artistic insecurities, as the doc’s focus shifts toward Glob’s difficult pregnancy, and her adjusted priorities in its wake. Gazing upon great art often clears our minds, sharpens our thinking and invites new ideas in; in “Apolonia, Apolonia,” tracing the long-term push-pull of someone else’s artistic process appears to do the same for the woman behind the camera.

The Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival started its 26th festival season Wednesday, highlighting the work of innovative filmmakers, storytellers and performers from the Asian diaspora within and outside of Canada.

Over the years, the team at Reel Asian, lead by executive director Deanna Wong, and artistic director Aram Siu Wai Collier, have made it their mission to showcase the work of established filmmakers, such as Chinese American writer and director Cathy Yan, whose dark comedy “Dead Pigs” screened at the festival in 2018, and those new to stepping behind the camera.

That includes creatives like up-and-coming Canadian director Anthony Shim, who took on multiple roles as writer, director, actor, editor and producer to bring his opening night story of immigration, family, acceptance and homesickness in the Korean Canadian drama “Riceboy Sleeps.”

Film l 라이스보이 슬립스 Riceboy Sleeps

The film is proving to be a festival favourite winning Shim the Jean-Marc Vallée Discovery Award from the Directors Guild of Canada, a $25,000 prize at the Windsor International Film Festival, the Best Canadian Film Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival and a prestigious Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival.

As a festival Reel Asian offers people from every Asian national, cultural and ethnic demographic the chance to see their own stories being reflected back at them, in a way that is rarely done in North America. And while Reel Asian is dedicated to portraying Asian stories, this in no way means that those from outside those communities are left out, or unable to relate to the films and programs.

Themes of feeling displaced, and confused within our own families, or the fear of disappointing our parents because of specific cultural and gender expectations are universal for people of colour, as is explored in the short film “Lucky Fish” by O’hau native Emily Jampel.

With accessibility being a major concern for many, Reel Asian has created a system where audiences have the option of watching in-person at the cinema, or online. . Below is a list of some of the features, documentaries, and short films showing throughout the festival.

To many, a successful meet-cute in Toronto might be the stuff of legend, but in Renuka Jeyapalan’s (“Kim’s Convenience,” “Sort Of,” “Workin’ Moms”) debut feature film, the stars might be aligned for Grace, played by local favourite Andrea Bang (“Kim’s Convenience”), who wants to break away from her shy and reserved nature to see what new opportunities await. Spending the night walking around downtown Toronto, Grace and new acquaintance Carter (Joe Scarpellino), an NHL athlete also looking for a new direction in life, take the time to get to know each other, their city and themselves in new and unexpected ways.

An Act of Worship

Directed by Oscar-nominated cinematographer and Emmy-winning documentarian Nausheen Dadabhoy (“The Ground Beneath Their Feet”), “An Act of Worship” follows three Muslim activists; Aber and Khadega, community organizers in New York and Michigan, and Ameena, a civil rights lawyer in California, as they share what it means to be women, mothers, political and religious in a country where all of those things on their own create daily challenges, but in a post 9/11 world, they also mean more scrutiny and prejudice from those outside their community. Through her lens, Dadabhoy shows how these three women, and those around them continue to be resilient and more than people expect them to be.

In its short run time of less than 10 minutes, “Tehura” shows how colonialism, sexism, racism and even commercialization create a distorted view of the women and their bodies.

Noise

When the hopes and dreams of a small Japanese island are placed heavily on the shoulders of young fig farmer Keita — played by actor Tatsuya Fujiwara of “Battle Royale” fame — the burden turns out to have more consequences than anyone could possibly imagine. Based on the manga of the same name by Tetsuya Tsutsui, and directed by acclaimed director Ryūichi Hiroki (“Side Job,” “The Egoists”), “Noise,” seems like a murder mystery that reveals the hidden grudges and obsessions of the island’s inhabitants, but below the surface turns out to be a critique of how Japan’s aging population could be in dire straits.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas; for some, it is all about getting Something From Tiffany’s. However this time, we’re talking about the book, not the little blue box.

When it comes to Christmas romances, many of us think of Hallmark movies but don’t usually gravitate toward books. Even so, there are plenty of Christmas-themed books out there, and the one we’re talking about today is Something From Tiffany’s by Melissa Hill.

If you don’t recognize that title, don’t fret as it’s actually a story that’s been republished. The original novel came out in 2011. Now, it’s been republished by Sourcebooks Landmark as a 2022 release with some revisions. This all comes amidst the release of a film adaptation on Prime Video set for December 9th, 2022.

If you’re a reader like me, then you’ll want to pick up the book before you watch the film so let’s break down why it’s better to read before you watch.

Something From Tiffany’s is a must-read before you snuggle up to enjoy the film.

First, let me thank the publisher for reaching out to me as I’d never have checked out this book but I’m really happy I did. With that being said, there will be no spoilers from this point on so if you haven’t read the book, then you can keep reading and I’m sure you’ll want to know the reasons why it’s a good Christmas read.

The first reason is a simple one and it’s that the book is set during Christmastime in New York City. Can you think of a more quintessential time for a Christmas book? Everything is so bright and sparky along with the dash of magic that Christmas always seems to bring with it. You’ll be craving a cup of hot chocolate before you finish the first 50 pages.

If you didn’t know, the premise of Something From Tiffany’s, the book follows two men who both buy something from Tiffany’s for their respective significant others and due to a series of events, their bags are mixed up. That’s the catalyst for the story and if that premise doesn’t make you want to pick it up, then I’m not sure how else to convince you.

With a premise like that, it’s clear this book is going to ensnare you from the start plus it’s a surprisingly fast-paced story. This is a book that I read in two sittings because I just couldn’t put it down. It was just so captivating as you’re watching these people deal with the fallout of one small mistake.

This reason might seem a bit obvious, but a lot of us readers want to read the book before the movie comes out to compare. If you’re like me, then you need to pick this one up as you have less than a month until the film is released. Plus it gives you a good idea of what you can look for when it comes to the film adaptation which is part of the reason for me at least.

The last reason and one that might sound a bit odd is that Something From Tiffany’s is a bit of a messy story with plenty of drama thrown in there. You’ll be rooting for a character on one page and then hate them a paragraph later. Every single thing that can happen to these characters happens and it’s just addicting. This story is messy yet in the best way so I’m anxious to see how things play out during the film.

If you’re already in the Christmas mood, be sure to check out Something From Tiffany’s by Melissa Hill. You never know, it might end up surprising you. However, if that’s not enough, we have a still from the film to share so that might convince you a bit more.

After reading the book and looking at this still, I’m even more excited to watch the film. However, I’d like to know if you plan on watching the film first or if you’re going to read the book first. I know some people like to watch before they read so that’s always an idea, too.

If you want to get your hands on a copy of the movie tie-in edition, it will be released on November 15th, 2022, and is being republished by Sourcebooks Landmark. If you’re looking for a copy now though, you can get it wherever books are sold.

Are you excited to watch Something From Tiffany’s? Have you read the book before now and will you be checking out the movie? Let us know in the comments.

Disney is giving Andor an unprecedented cross-platform publicity push going into the Thanksgiving holiday.

The company is going to air the Star Wars drama’s first two episodes on ABC — along with FX, Freeform and Hulu. It marks the first time a Disney+ Star Wars series has run on the broadcast network. The move comes as the show’s first season finale is set to stream on Disney+.

Andor sees star Diego Luna reprising his Rogue One rebel fighter Cassian Andor. Many critics regard the show as the best Star Wars series yet, praising its grown-up tone, relatively complex morality and strong visual effects. But Andor has struggled to bring in as many viewers as predecessors such as The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan and its first half of the season has been criticized by some Star Wars fans as a slow burn. The cross-platform push suggests Disney has faith that the series has the potential to draw a bigger audience.

Andor‘s first two episodes will air on ABC Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 9 p.m., on FX Thursday, Nov. 24 at 9 p.m., on Freeform Nov. 25 at 9 p.m. and will be available on Hulu from Nov. 23 to Dec. 7. To watch the rest of the season, viewers will have to switch over to Disney+, where the finale airs Nov. 23.

Andor is “set five years before the events of Rogue One and focuses on Cassian and his journey toward becoming a rebel hero. The tale is set against the backdrop of a burgeoning rebellion against a ruthless Empire, where people and planets are drawn into a conflict that will have far-reaching effects across the galaxy.”

Garth Brooks will make his return to the Las Vegas Strip in 2023 when his new residency Garth Brooks/Plus One gets underway at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The Country Music Hall of Fame member made the announcement on Monday morning.

The new shows will begin next May and run through the end of the year for 27 dates total. The “Plus One” aspect of its title hints at the show’s format. Each night will be different, with Brooks being supported by varying members of his band from song to song and/or special guests, providing an entirely unique experience for the fans in attendance.

“Any given song, all 10 band members will be playing and singing, then none of them will be,” Brooks told Billboard. “Then maybe percussion and background vocals for ‘The River.’ Or [I’m] talking about George Strait and ‘Amarillo by Morning’ and all of a sudden [Jimmy] Mattingly shows up with the fiddle and it’s just [me] and him. Any given night can have any given variation of any given song.”

Verified ticket registration for the residency is open now through Thursday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. ET. Sales will begin for verified registrants on Monday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. ET. The 4,300-seat venue will offer tickets ranging from $99 and up.

Brooks previously had his own residency in Las Vegas beginning in December 2009, playing solo acoustic shows at the Wynn’s Encore Theatre for a little more than four years until early 2014. He was semi-retired at the time, but after the end of the residency, he returned to recording and touring full-time.

Essential Doc Reads is our curated selection of recent features and important news items about the documentary form and its processes, from around the internet, as well as from the Documentary magazine archive. We hope you enjoy!

The Jihad Rehab conversation continues with an article by Moustafa Bayoumi from The Nation. Bayoumi explains that the questioning of the ethics and execution of the film dates back a few years, and that the issue is not the fact that a white, non-Muslim woman made the film, but rather that filmmaker Meg Smaker put participants in dangerous and incriminating situations.

I don’t know Meg Smaker, the filmmaker, but I can judge “Meg,” the voice on this documentary. And “Meg” is a cop. “Meg” is an interrogator. “Meg” is the intelligence officer at Guantánamo sitting across the table from these men, asking the same questions, day after day, month after month, and year after year. There comes a point when one of the men in the film has had enough of “Meg” and refuses further participation. The film lingers repeatedly on his silences to “Meg’s” ridiculous and damning questions, as if to suggest that his silence equals guilt. In this film, not admitting guilt functions cinematically as proof of guilt.

To argue that Meg Smaker is a victim of identity politics is to divert attention away from the substantive harm and ethical lapses of this film, and that’s a real shame. When will the United States squarely address the damage it has done at Guantánamo and seek a remedy for those it harmed?

Variety’s Addie Morfoot and IDFA Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia discuss the 35th International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, which opened this week. Nyrabia explains the freedom that festivals offer for filmmakers looking for alternative paths for screening.

There is a big illusion that with streamers came more freedom or more diversity of artistic approaches. Time is proving that wrong. I think there is a mainstream, and so far, at least the major streamers, are all participants or members of this mainstream that was there before them. So, the space for alternative expression is very small, and it relies on people who are not seeking big sales. The ancient equation – more money and more control equals less artistic freedom, and less money and less control equals more artistic freedom still holds true. Festivals do have a role together with film funds to support films that have cultural value and artistic value, not only market value.

Shayla Harris, an independent director, producer, and IDA Enterprise Documentary Fund Grantee (for Lighting Africa), and filmmaker Stacey L. Holman, discuss for Medium their own filmmaking and the power of social impact within them.

We had a whole conversation about that. It’s a series that will generate conversations like that. What does it mean to be Black? What does it mean to have Black joy? What does it mean to have Black love? I hope people will start having those conversations. I want people to really just take a moment and just catch their breath because I think we’ve been through so much. This series is a reminder that we still had Black businesses in the midst of slavery. We still created art and culture in the midst of slavery. We wrote books. So, I really hope that it will be one of the many takeaways from the series.

For Screen Daily, Geoffrey Macnab writes about the current crisis of the success of documentaries in the theatrical box office. Through a conversation with Anne Vierhout, managing director of Cinema Delicatessen, the lack of cash flow to documentaries is explored.

Since the pandemic, a few docs have done decent business in cinemas. Sara Dosa’s Sundance title Fire Of Love, for example, has been released widely in cinemas around the world. grossing over $1m to date in North America for National Geographic Films and Neon. Some have done great business: Brett Morgan’s David Bowie title Moonage Daydream has grossed approximately $11.6m to date.

However, many others have underperformed. Exhibitors have become less willing to book documentaries or to give them the best screening slots. There is still a backlog of films from the pandemic period when cinemas were closed and cinemagoers who watch documentaries, and who tend to skew older, have not yet returned to theatres at pre-pandemic levels.

Another piece by Addie Morfoot for Variety explores what types of documentaries attract the largest audience. No surprise here: docs about celebrities and sports remain supreme. But the reason is less superficial than you may suspect.

Given the ongoing worldwide pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, America’s school shooting crisis, and the yearly uptick in extreme weather events, it’s not exactly a surprise that viewers are attracted to nonfiction content that isn’t didactic. It makes sense that factual features and series about celebrities, sports, and music are all the rage. Ironically so are true crime documentaries focused on serial murderers, fraudsters, and crypto criminals.

While streamers and networks alike aren’t clamoring to program factual fare that will leave audiences angry or petrified, they are still distributing docs that explore pressing social issues. But instead of those issues being thrown in viewers’ faces, subject matters including racism, political upheaval, and climate change are often sprinkled into many of today’s documentary features and series. More often than not, a celebrity is used to lure viewers into a story that has a few Debbie Downers to swallow.

From the Archive: March 31, 2004, February/March 2004: “Define Your Audience: Generating Some FilmBuzz & Thinking Without A Box”

To successfully market your film you have to be able to define your audience. If you haven’t already defined your audience, do it now. It’s not enough to say that your audience is “everyone.” You can’t count on the oohs and aahs of family and friends––who see your baby and exclaim that it’s wonderful–to get you a distributor. Unless your film is so personal that your audience is limited to family and friends, you’ll have to define your audience in marketable terms.

Defining your audience in marketable terms involves researching similar films to determine their audiences and venues––that is, where the film was seen. While defining your audience isn’t easy, it’s not impossible. Fortunately, much of the information you need can be found online, and by attending film festivals and studying distributors’ catalogs.

Essential Doc Reads

President Joe Biden sat down with President Xi Jinping in Bali Monday for a discussion meant to ensure competitive rivalry does not become ‘anything near conflict,’ and planned to dispatch the nation’s top diplomat to Beijing to continue discussions.

‘The two leaders agreed that Secretary of State Blinken will visit China to follow up on their discussions,’ according to an official White House readout following the meeting.

Biden spoke ‘candidly’ and said the U.S. would compete ‘vigorously’ with China, the White House said. But he also ‘reiterated that this competition should not veer into conflict and underscored that the United States and China must manage the competition responsibly and maintain open lines of communication.’

Biden once again raised sensitive human rights issues, a practice he makes a point of carrying out in conversations where he says he tries to be direct.

Biden ‘raised concerns about PRC practices in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, and human rights more broadly,’ according to the White House. Xinjiang is where China is accused of carrying out brutal repression of the Uygher minority.

He also brought up tensions in the Taiwan Straits, where policy experts fear a series aggressive Chinese moves could foreshadow a military confrontation.

President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping shook hands at the start of their first in-person meeting of Biden’s presidency

The statement mentions the situation in Ukraine, but does not reveal whether the leaders broke new ground, after  a senior administration official said a top Chinese leader was ’embarrassed’ by Russia’s military conduct.

‘President Biden raised Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine and Russia’s irresponsible threats of nuclear use,’ according to the readout. ‘President Biden and President Xi reiterated their agreement that a nuclear war should never be fought and can never be won and underscored their opposition to the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine.’ The two also discussed North Korea’s ‘provocative behavior’ when Biden raised it, although the statement gives no sense of how China responded.

Biden ‘raised U.S. objections to the PRC’s coercive and increasingly aggressive actions toward Taiwan, which undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the broader region, and jeopardize global prosperity,’ the statement said. Biden also laid out how the U.S. One China policy ‘has not changed’ – code for the diplomatic dance around the status of Taiwan, which the U.S. pledges to protect under the Taiwan Relations Act.

Biden’s advisors said there were hopes the meeting might at least produce a ‘floor’ for the fraught relationship between the two global powers. Their talk comes amid a brutal war in Ukraine, tensions across the Taiwan Strait, and global fears over North Korea’s repeated missile tests.

His Chinese counterpart said he was prepared for a ‘candid and in-depth exchange of views.’

The two powerful leaders shook hands inside a luxury hotel in Bali at the start of their meetings to kick off the event. They smiled for the cameras as they greeted, with Xi, 69, touching Biden’s elbow at one point and Biden, 79, putting a hand on Xi’s back as they walked a short distance.

‘Good to see you,’ Biden told Xi as they met for the first time in years, having often boasted publicly of having met Xi more often than any other US official.

Then, the president addressed a large room full of officials to kick off the much-hyped event, in the ballroom with a huge floral arrangement between the two men, who each sat at separate long tables.

He said a goal was to ‘show that China and the United States can manage our differences.’

‘As leaders of our two nations, we share responsibility, in my view, to show that China and the United States can manage our differences, prevent competition from becoming anything near conflict, and find ways to work together on urgent global issues that require mutual cooperation,’ Biden said.

‘History is the best textbook, so we should take history as a mirror and let it guide a future,’ Xi told him.

Both leaders were unmasked at the top of the meeting, while their officials wore masks. The Chinese members wore identical masks bearing a picture of the nation’s red flag. The US delegation’s weren’t so color coordinated, with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen sporting a black mask and others opting for white.

‘The world expects, I believe, China and the United States to play a key role in addressing global challenges from climate changes to food insecurity for us to be able to work together. The United States stands ready to do just that,’ said Biden.

‘We need to find the right direction for the bilateral relationship going forward, and elevate the relationship,’ said Xi.

Xi echoed Biden’s comments on the need for face-to-face communication.

‘We have maintained communication via video conferences, phone calls and letters,’ Xi said at the top of the meeting.

‘But none of them have been a substitute for face-to-face exchanges,’ he said through a translator.

‘The world has come to a crossroads,’ Xi continued. ‘Where to go from here. This is a question that is not only on our mind but also on the mind of all countries. The world expects that China and the United States will properly handle the relationship.’

He noted that since the U.S. and China have gone through ’50 plus eventful years’ since they established diplomatic relations, and said he hoped they would ‘chart the right course for the China-US relationship.’

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Xi said the current state of relations was not in the interest of both countries and that they needed to ‘steer the rudder,’ Reuters reported from Beijing.

American officials said Monday before the meeting they believe China is becoming increasingly concerned and embarrassed about Russia’s war in Ukraine and Vladimir Putin‘s rhetoric on nuclear weapons.

They spoke just ahead of Joe Biden‘s first meeting as president with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Beijing’s relationship with Moscow since the invasion of Ukraine will be one of the areas where Biden will want to get a handle on Xi’s thinking.

The officials delivered an assessment of discussions at a summit of southeast Asian leaders in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, attended by the Chinese premier, Beijing’s second most powerful figure.

‘Premier Li Keqiang spoke rather extensively about China’s policy towards Ukraine, put clear insistence on sovereignty, on the responsibility of nuclear threats, the need to ensure that nuclear weapons are not used in the way that some have suggested,’ said an official on a briefing call with reporters.

Putin has repeatedly warned that he could use tactical nuclear weapons to defend his territory.

The official went on to say that the US delegation picked up more details of Chinese unease at the summit.

‘I think the messaging in the hallway was unmistakable and yes there have been areas where China and Russia have worked together to deepen and broaden their relationship – economically, on energy, technologically and in a variety of other areas,’ said the officials.

‘But on some of these big issues. I think there is undeniably some discomfort in Beijing about what we’ve seen in terms of reckless rhetoric and activities on the part of Russia.

‘I think it is also undeniable that China is probably both surprised and even a little bit embarrassed by the conduct of Russian military operations.’

The official did not describe the source of the messaging, but Li was in Phnom Penh where he met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Sunday.

U.S. officials will see an opportunity to drive a wedge between China and Russia, after months of concern that Beijing might respond favorably to Moscow’s requests for weapons.

Biden is due to meet Xi ahead of the Group of 20 leaders summit in Bali on Monday evening.

He cut a relaxed figure earlier, meeting with the Indonesian President Joko Widodo. He told his host he planned never to leave and would be ‘staying on the beach.’

His focus now turns to Xi and the most important moment of his foreign trip.

The two have known each other since 2011, but this will be their first face-to-face meeting since Biden took office last year.

Officials and Biden himself have taken pains to play down expectations, framing the get-together as a chance to understand each other’s red lines.

It comes after months of tensions over Taiwan and accusations that China is stealing American technology.  The latest flashpoint came last month when the Biden administration moved to ban the sale of cutting-edge microchips to China.

Now officials say Biden will want to understand where Xi stands on China’s growing relationship with Russia, its designs on the island of Taiwan, and whether it is willing to do anything to rein in North Korea’s aggression.

A second official on the call said Biden wanted to ensure that competition between the two countries did not spiral out of control.

‘He wants to make sure that that competition is bounded, that we develop guardrails that we have clear rules of the road, and that we do all of that to ensure that competition does not veer of the conflict,’ the official said.

Xi arrives at the summit with his position cemented by a recent party congress. He will serve a second term of 10 years and saw some of his potential rivals sidelined.

It means American officials will have a chance to see his most trusted allies up close.

‘Tonight in the meeting, we think President Xi will read with him some new faces that will be taking more prominent roles in the formulation and execution of Chinese policy in the time ahead,’ said the official.

Biden also strengthened his position on Sunday, when Democrats won their 50th Senate seat, giving them control of the upper chamber for another two years.

The fate of the House remains in the balance, although Republicans appear to be on course to win it with the slimmest of majorities.

‘I know I’m coming in stronger,’ Biden told reporters traveling with him in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, ‘but I didn’t need that.

‘I know Xi Jinping, I’ve spent more time with him than any other world leader.

‘I know him well. He knows me.

‘We have very little misunderstanding and we just got to figure out where the red lines are.’

The creators of “Stranger Things” are dropping more hints about what to expect from the upcoming fifth and final season.

During an FYC panel on Sunday Night, creators Matt and Ross Duffer, director Shawn Levy and stars Millie Bobby Brown (who attended virtually), Caleb McLaughlin, Priah Ferguson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Joseph Quinn and Eduardo Franco, opened up about their Season 4 processes.

At the end of the conversation, moderator Patton Oswalt attempted to get scoop from the executive producers about the tone of the fifth season, asking if there were new horror legends or pop culture moments they planned on referencing.

“Five, the way we see it, is kind of a culmination of all the seasons, so it’s sort of got a little bit from each,” Ross Duffer said at the Tudum Theater. “Whereas before each season was so distinctly… [Season] 3 is our big summer blockbuster season with big monsters, and [Season] 4 was the psychological horror. I think that what we’re trying to do is go back to the beginning a little bit, in sort of the tone of 1.”

He added that “scale-wise,” the last group of episodes are “more aligned with what [Season] 4 is.” Ross told the audience, “Hopefully, it’s got a little bit of everything.”

Although no spoilers were revealed during the 45-minute discussion, the team shared that the premiere episode (titled “The Crawl”) is finished and that the two-hour pitch meeting to the Netflix team, during which they mapped out the overall plan for the end, had the execs in tears.

“Just as important as the supernatural, we have so many characters now, most of whom are still living,” Ross said. “It’s important to wrap up those arcs because a lot of these characters have been growing since Season 1. So, it’s a balancing act between giving them time to complete their character arcs and also, tying up these loose ends and doing our final reveals.”

Levy noted that while he is “paralyzed with fear” of spoiling anything, he’s continuously impressed with the work that the Duffers put in.

“Even though the show has gotten so famous and the characters have gotten so iconic, and they’re so much about the ’80s and the supernatural and the genre, it’s about these people,” he said. “It’s about these characters. Season 5 is already so clearly taking care of these stories of characters, because that’s always been the lifeblood of ‘Stranger Things.’”

The team has previously talked about holding back from adding new characters in the final season, in order to fully focus on the large ensemble they already have.

“Whenever we introduce a new character, we want to make sure that they’re going to be an integral part of the narrative,” Matt said in August. “So that’s something with Eddie this season, where we go, ‘Well, we need a character here for this storyline to really work, and to give it the engine that is needed.’ But every time we do that, we’re nervous, because you go, ‘We’ve got a great cast of characters here, and actors, and any moment we’re spending with a new character, we’re taking time away from one of the other actors.’ So we’re just very, very careful about who we’re introducing.”

Oscar contenders are squaring off in this early battle for the Best Documentary prize.

All eyes were on nonfiction films tonight when the Critics Choice Documentary Awards took place in New York City. The ceremony highlights the best feature, short, and television documentaries, pitting blockbusters like “The Beatles: Get Back” and “Moonage Daydream” against smaller Oscar contenders like “Descendant” and “Fire of Love.” The ceremony serves as an early battleground in the Best Documentary Feature race, so it’s a can’t-miss event for Oscar watchers.

One clear winner emerged throughout the night: “Good Night Oppy.” Ryan White’s documentary about NASA’s groundbreaking Opportunity rover won five of the top prizes: Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, Best Score, Best Science/Nature Documentary, and Best Narration. Given that the Amazon-backed documentary was competing against the likes of Judd Apatow and Brett Morgen, the sweep made a bold statement as the Oscar race heats up.

On the episodic side, “The Beatles: Get Back” won Best Limited Series Documentary and Best Music Documentary, though it lost Best Archival Documentary to “Fire of Love.” And Rob McElhenney showed up to accept Best Sports Documentary for “Welcome to Wrexham,” an honor his show shared with “Citizen Ashe.”

Keep reading for the complete list of nominees from the 2022 Critics Choice Documentary Awards. Winners have been bolded.

Oscar contenders are squaring off in this

David Beckham has already faced a considerable amount backlash for accepting £10 million ($11.7 million ) to be an ambassador for the controversial Qatar 2022 World Cup, which kicks off in Doha on Nov. 20. But the matter has now amassed further attention thanks to Brit comic and TV host Joe Lycett.

Lycett — well-known in the U.K. for taking on political issues — posted a video on Sunday saying that he would put £10,000 of his own money into a shredder if Beckham didn’t end his deal with Qatar.

Describing Beckham as a “gay icon” due to him being the first footballer to do photoshoots with gay magazines, speak openly about his gay fans, and marry a Spice Girl (“the gayest thing a human being can do”), Lycett noted that Qatar was voted one of the worst places in the world to be gay and a country where homosexuality was illegal, punishable by imprisonment and, in some case, death.

Lycett challenged Beckham to end his relationship with Qatar, and said he would donate the £10,000 ($11,700) to charities that support queer people in soccer. However, if he didn’t, he said at midday U.K. time on Sunday, Nov 20, just before the World Cup opening ceremony, he would throw the money into a shredder and stream it live on his website benderslikebeckham.com.

“Not just the money, but your status as a gay icon will be shredded,” he added.

Destroying legal tender is, of course, illegal in the U.K., a fact Lycett acknowledged.

“You’ll be forcing me to commit a crime,” he said. “But even then I reckon I’ll get off more lightly than I would if I got caught wanking off a lad in Doha.”

The highly anticipated fifth season of The Crown has finally landed on Netflix, alongside an entirely new cast to portray all the drama and scandals the royal family experienced during the ’90s.

While fans have been critical of the casting choices for the latest instalment (I’m sorry, but Dominic West is way too attractive to play Prince Charles), there has been widespread praise for Elizabeth Debicki’s performance as Princess Diana.

From the very first episode, Elizabeth channels the very essence of Diana — from her mannerisms to her emotional hardships and, of course, the love she feels for William and Harry.

This wouldn’t have been possible without The Crown’s incredible costume department, who were inspired by and recreated a number of Diana’s most iconic outfits. So, let’s take a closer look at what was depicted in the Netflix series versus what Diana wore in real life.

1.

First, here’s Diana wearing a floral dress in the Season 5 premiere as she prepares to go on a ‘second honeymoon’ with Charles. In real life, Diana wore a similar dress during her visit to Nigeria in 1990.

2.

In the same episode, Diana is shown wearing an off-white top and skirt, with a matching belt. In real life, Diana wore an almost identical outfit during a 1992 trip to Egypt.

3.

Later on, we see Diana wearing a leopard print swimsuit in The Crown, which was definitely inspired by this real life outfit worn during a holiday in 1990 to Necker Island.

4.

At the Ghillies Ball in Balmoral, we see Diana wearing a white dress, pearls and a tartan sash, which is just about spot on to the outfit she wore to the real Ghillies Ball in 1991.

5.

For a press appearance at a local hospital, Diana dons a red and black suit with gold buttons. In real life, Diana wore a very similar outfit while touring a redevelopment project in 1993.

6.

If there was one thing Diana was known for, it was her sporty style — which usually consisted of an oversized sweater and bike shorts. The Crown recreates this perfectly through its inclusion of a Harvard sweatshirt worn by Diana in 1997.

7.

Here’s Diana wearing another floral dress in The Crown, which may have been inspired by a similar outfit she wore in 1991 while standing next to Barbara Bush, the wife of former US president George H. W. Bush.

8.

In the third episode, Diana meets Mohamed and Dodi Al-Fayed at a polo match while wearing a lilac suit. In real life, Diana wore an identical coloured suit while visiting the USA in 1997.

9.

Perhaps the most iconic outfit that Diana wears — both in real life and in The Crown — is her revenge dress worn to the Serpentine Gallery in 1994. The costume department went all out on this one, replicating both the shape of the dress and the jewellery.

10.

For Prince William’s first day at Eton, Diana’s striking blue blazer and all-black outfit was recreated in The Crown.

11.

In the seventh episode, Diana visits her brother, Earl Spencer, and is wearing a red puffer jacket. In real life, Diana owned a similar jacket, which she wore on a skiing holiday in 1993.

12.

There’s also a scene showing Diana wearing a stunning sequinned dress, which looks almost identical to the one worn by Diana to a charity dinner in 1996.

13.

Diana wears several different outfits when visiting Hasnat Khan at the hospital, including this green number that was worn IRL by Diana in 1992 while in France.

14.

There’s also this recreation of a green turtleneck-blazer combo that the real Diana wore in 1993.

15.

From the hair, to the makeup, to the outfit and Diana’s mannerisms, The Crown nailed their recreation of the Martin Bashir interview.

16.

And lastly, in one of Diana’s final appearances in The Crown Season 5, we see her attend a Royal Gala performance of Swan Lake while wearing a blue dress. Around the same time in real life, Diana also wore a similar dress while attending the ballet.

17.

But it looks like The Crown might have also been influenced by this beaded, halter-neck dress worn by Diana in 1995.

Major props to The Crown’s costume department! What was your favourite Diana outfit this season?

Taylor Swift wore the sartorial version of “Bejeweled” to the MTV Europe Music Awards.

On November 13, Swift hit the EMAs red carpet in Duesseldorf, Germany wearing a black bodysuit with a sheer, emerald-embellished skirt overlay. She paired the stunning David Koma dress with black peep-toe pumps and Delfina Delettrez rings, keeping the focus on the ensemble with a basic winged eyeliner, glittering shadow, and a subtle pink lip.

I’m sorry but you can’t tell me this sparkling number is not the literal interpretation of her “Bejeweled” lyrics. The moment I saw the photos, I literally sang “best believe I’m still bejeweled when I walk in the room, I can still make the whole place shimmer” out loud.

Dolly Parton this weekend was presented with the Bezos Award for Courage & Civility by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and partner Lauren Sanchez. The $100 million prize recognizes “leaders who aim high, find solutions and who always do it with civility,” said Sanchez. The money is granted “to direct to the charities that (recipients) see fit.”

Bezos said Parton “embodies these ideals so thoroughly; she gives with her heart. What she’s done for kids, literacy and so many other things is just incredible.”

Receiving the award, the country superstar exclaimed, “Wow! Did you say $100 million? When people are in a position to help, you should help, and I know that I’ve always said I try to put my money where my heart is… I will do my best to do good things with this money.”

Bezos tweeted video of the presentation on Saturday; see it below.

Parton is known for her humanitarian efforts, which include backing the Moderna Covid vaccine via a $1 million donation to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center for its coronavirus research in 2020.

She also founded the Dollywood Foundation, which includes the Imagination Library, a book gifting program that mails high-quality, free books to more than a million children around the world each month; and in 2021, Parton used her royalties from Whitney Houston’s rendition of her song “I Will Always Love You” to purchase a strip mall in Nashville to support the local Black community.

Parton was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame despite initially saying she did not feel she had “earned that right” since she has never recorded a rock album. Her Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas family TV movie is set for air on NBC December 1.

Parton joins previous recipients of the Bezos Award, activist Van Jones and chef and humanitarian Jose Andres.

The fifth season of The Crown recently arrived on Netflix, however, we’re already looking ahead, and reporting on all of the information for the upcoming sixth and final season. Filming began in September, and the series is expected to return to Netflix by the end of 2023.

Created by Peter Morgan, The Crown has become one of the most popular Originals that Netflix has to offer. Since its very first season, The Crown has been one of the most expensive shows ever made, with each season costing over $100 million to produce. At first, there were only going to be five seasons, but as production began on the fifth season, Peter Morgan reversed his decision and a sixth season was announced.

Over four seasons, The Crown has been nominated for a total of 423 awards so far, winning 129 of them. The Crown swept the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards in 2021 by winning all seven awards in the drama categories, including the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Olivia Colman’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II, joining Claire Foy, who also earned a Primetime Emmy for her portrayal of the British monarch.

Which historical events will we see in The Crown season 6?

Thanks to the release of the fifth season we can now take some educated assumptions on what historical events we can expect to see in the sixth season of The Crown.

We were extremely surprised that the death of Princess Diana wasn’t covered in the fifth season, which leaves plenty of events to happen for season 6.

  • The death of Princes Diana, and Dodi Fayed
  • The new Millenium
  • 9/11
  • Prince Harry’s one day of rehab
  • The death of Princess Margaret
  • The death of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother
  • The Iraq War

The early 2000s were some of the hardest years in Queen Elizabeth’s life thanks to the death of her late sister, Princess Margaret, in February 2002. Only a month later in March 2002 at the age of 101, The Queen Mother also passed away.

Prior to the death of two of her closest family members, the Royal Family was still dealing with the fallout from the death of Lady Diana. At the age of 16, Prince Harry was confronted by his father, Prince Charles, after learning that Harry had regularly been smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol. Prince Harry was sent to Featherstone Lodge, a detox center for heroin addicts in Peckham, where he would learn the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

Events outside of the UK saw the republican George W Bush become the 43rd President of the United States. In the first year of his presidency, the tragic events of 9/11 unfolded, eventually leading the US and its allies into the Iraq War and the War on terror.

What is the episode count for The Crown season 6?

Like the previous seasons, the final season will conclude with ten episodes.

What is the filming status of The Crown season 6?

From starring in mega hit movies to playing a destructive drug addict to a cowgirl whose husband is hiding a secret love affair, Anne Hathaway has been a high-profile Hollywood princess for more than two decades.

To celebrate her 40th birthday, Variety took a look back to rank the Oscar-winner’s 12 best film performances to date.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in New Jersey, Hathaway made a splash from the start. After a brief stint in the ensemble of the Fox family drama series “Get Real,” things took off for Hathaway in 2001 thanks to the verve she brought to her portrayal of Mia Thermopolis, the heir to the throne of Genovia in Garry Marshall’s “The Princess Diaries.” Hathaway burst off the screen like a breath of fresh air, holding her own against the legengary Julie Andrews. “Princess Diaries” went on to gross over $160 million at the global box office and spawned the 2004 sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” also with Andrews and directed by Marshall.

A star had indeed been born.

From her royal debut, Hathaway went on to star in comedies such as Madeline Bray in the Charles Dickens’ adaptation of “Nicholas Nickleby” (2002) and playing the titular character in the fantasy feature “Ella Enchanted” (2004).

When she was cast as Lureen Newsome in Ang Lee’s cowboy love story “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), she showed she had chops beyond rom-com cute. The industry knew Hathaway was going to be a force who helped define her generation of actors.

She moved on to another box office and critical smash, “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) opposite Meryl Streep. Two years later she tuned up her comedy chops with no less a master of upscale slapstick than Steve Carell in “Get Smart” (2008).

That same year, Hathaway also saw her profile soar among actors with her tour de force as a drug addict just out of rehab who returns home for her sister’s wedding in “Rachel Getting Married” (2008). Her work in the searing Jonathan Demme drama proved she was one of the industry’s most technically gifted performers. She earned her first Oscar nomination for best actress for the film, which paved the way for her musically brilliant Fantine four years later in Tom Hooper’s “Les Misérables” (2012). Playing opposite star Hugh Jackman, she made the most of her minimal screentime, and belted the memorable “I Dreamed a Dream” in a one-take sensation that cemented her place in Hollywood. For that, Hathaway collected the Oscar for best supporting actress.

Since then, she’s been cast in acclaimed features such as “Interstellar” (2014), the spinoff “Ocean’s Eight” (2018) and most recently, as mother Esther Graff in James Gray’s childhood drama “Armageddon Time,” which has earned her praise.

Next on the docket for Hathaway is a slew of interesting projects including “Eileen” opposite Thomasin McKenzie, “She Came to Me” alongside Marisa Tomei and “The Idea of You” from director Michael Showalter.

Here’s Variety’s selection of Hathaway’s 12 best movie performances, along with clips from each film that highlight the essence of her talent.

Honorable mentions: “Interstellar” (2014); “The Intern” (2015); “The Witches” (2020); “Armageddon Time” (2022)

Four people died in a house fire in Fox Lake, Alta., according to the RCMP.

Fox Lake RCMP received a report around 6:40 a.m. Saturday of a house fire on Barge Road.

When police officers arrived on scene, the house was already destroyed.

On Sunday, fire investigators and a cadaver dog attended the scene and found the remains of four people inside the home.

The remains of the deceased have been brought to the medical examiner to confirm their identities and cause of death. No other information has been released about the victims.

Police believe a five-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy managed to escape the house fire. They were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the Fox Lake nursing station.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but RCMP said it does not appear to be suspicious.
