Montreal police say a 16-year-old teenager was stabbed outside a school in Saint-Michel Thursday afternoon after an altercation broke out between three teen boys.

Authorities say the incident happened just after 3 p.m. in front of Collège Reine-Marie, a private high school located on Saint-Michael Boulevard near the Champdoré Street intersection.

The victim was stabbed in his back and face, according to police, but health officials say his life is not in danger and he is stable in hospital.

An investigation is underway but no arrests have been made. A perimeter was set around the scene for investigators to locate the weapon used in the incident.

Police say they will be reviewing security footage from local businesses as well.

“Heartstopper,” Netflix’s hit teenage romantic drama, has started production on Season 2 in the U.K., with four new cast members joining the series based on Alice Oseman’s best selling graphic novels about the budding love story between the bashful Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and the earnest Nick Nelson (Kit Connor).

Jack Barton (Netflix’s “The Letter for the King”) has been cast as Nick’s older brother, David — a university student who is less than enthusiastic about Nick and Charlie’s relationship.

British stage actor Nima Taleghani (“Cyrano de Bergerac”) will play Mr. Farouk, one of the teachers at Truham Grammar School, where Nick and Charlie attend with their friends Tao (William Gao) and Isaac (Tobie Donovan).

After a nationwide casting call, newcomer Leila Khan will play Sahar Zahid, a student from the Higgs Girls school, where Nick and Charlie’s friends Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) attend.

And Bradley Riches, who appeared as an unnamed student in Season 1 of “Heartstopper,” has been upped to a named character, James McEwan — a new character for the show.

The first season of “Heartstopper” premiered Apr. 22 and quickly became a sensation, topping Variety‘s Trending TV chart for multiple consecutive weeks and winning wide acclaim for its engrossing and compassionate story of openly LGBTQ young love. The entire lead cast is returning for Season 2, including Connor, Locke, Finney, Gao, Brown, Edgell, Sebastian Croft as Ben, Tobie Donovan as Isaac, Rhea Norwood as Imogen, Jenny Walser as Tori and Cormac Hyde-Corrin as Harry.

Oseman created the show and wrote every episode of Season 1. She returns to do the same for Season 2.

See-Saw Films produces the show.

Imax is looking to benefit from streaming era competition by acquiring SSIMWAVE, a Canadian tech start-up focused on optimizing video quality and viewer experience on multiple platforms.

The giant screen pioneer is paying $18.5 million in cash and $2.5 million in stock for the streaming technology company, with $4 million in additional earnout payments to be made if operating goals are met.

Imax CEO Richard Gelfond told The Hollywood Reporter the acquisition will allow his company to deliver the highest quality video images on any screen and device with different bandwidths beyond a traditional giant screen theatrical market. “It’s a streaming technology that takes images and maximizes the quality of them for any particular platform. If you’re on an iPhone, it will have the best possible image on the iPhone,” Gelfond explained.

The same can be done on a 100-inch TV as the SIMMWAVE AI software recognizes which device or platform a consumer is on and maximizes the viewing experience accordingly. Gelfond added the AI software behind the firm’s image enhancement technology is based on real data from real people on what excellent viewing quality should be.

And the streaming technology can be applied to a range of content and platforms, as optimum screen resolution is possible on emerging 4K, 8K and other interactive experiences across gaming, virtual reality, augmented reality and the metaverse, among other platforms.

Imax will continue to offer SIMMWAVE’s image optimization technology to existing streaming giant clients Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount Plus and Comcast/NBCU for live broadcasting, and scale the company up to serve additional customers in the streaming space. The benefit to Imax is it now has an additional revenue stream.

And online players can reduce the risk that big investments in original movies and TV series may be compromised by a bad viewership experience on digital devices. “When they stream content to their different platforms, SIMMWAVE technology tells them how to stream it in the most cost effective way that creates the highest quality experience,” Gelfond added.

The Imax chief added SIMMWAVE is expected to be profitable by 2023. The Waterloo, Ontario-based startup is led by CEO Dr. Abdul Rehman and has around 30 engineers set to collaborate with Imax’s own engineers at the company’s research headquarters in nearby Toronto.

“We’re excited to join Imax and tap into its global scale and expertise as more streamers turn to SSIMWAVE to ensure the best viewing experiences while reducing bandwidth costs,” Dr. Rehman said in a statement.

For Imax, which has made much about allowing Hollywood directors to make movies using its proprietary cameras, Gelfond says the SIMMWAVE technology will allow filmmakers to see the best viewing experience for their films, TV series or other content on platforms beyond the movie theater.

“Filmmakers will be really happy about this acquisition because we’re going to help make sure that when their content is released on alternative platforms, it’s going to be in the best way possible,” he said.

EXCLUSIVE: This is your first look at the official trailer for All That Breathes, the surefire Oscar contender that has been called “a stone-cold masterpiece.”

The documentary directed by Shaunak Sen won the Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema Documentary at Sundance and followed that up with the Golden Eye (l’Oeil d’or) prize as the best documentary at Cannes. With exceptional cinematography, the film immerses viewers in the story of Nadeem and Saud, brothers in Delhi, India who care for injured black kites, a bird of prey living in and soaring above one of the world’s most populous and smog-choked cities.

HBO Documentary Films/Sideshow/Submarine Deluxe

“Amid environmental toxicity and social unrest, the ‘kite brothers’ spend day and night caring for the creatures in their makeshift avian basement hospital,” according to a synopsis of the film. “…Sen (Cities of Sleep) explores the connection between the kites and the Muslim brothers who help them return to the skies, offering a mesmerizing chronicle of inter-species coexistence.”

The film, from Sideshow and Submarine Deluxe in association with HBO Documentary Films, opens theatrically in the U.K. on October 14, in New York on October 21, and in L.A. on October 28. Beforehand, All That Breathes will continue its festival run, screening at the London Film Festival on October 7 and 8, and at the New York Film Festival on October 11 and 12, with director Sen on hand for Q&As both nights. This past Sunday, All That Breathes played at the Camden International Film Festival in Maine.

Sen’s film has also screened at DocAviv in Tel Aviv, the Krakow Film Festival in Poland, Dokufest in Kosovo, and the Hong Kong International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Firebird Award. Jurors there hailed it as “a film with exquisite and poetic cinematography. It prompts its audience to give more profound thoughts about the living conditions of different races and animals.”

“When we got our first kite, I’d stay up at night staring at it,” one of the brothers says in the film. “It looked like a furious reptile from another planet.”

Birds including the kite are renowned for their keen eyesight. But one kite above Delhi apparently needed corrective lenses. Watch the trailer to see what we mean.

EXCLUSIVE: This is your first look at

Apple Music will take over as the sponsor of the NFL’s Super Bowl halftime show, replacing Pepsi as the key backer of the annual spectacle that typically draws one of the biggest single TV audiences of the year.

“Music and sports hold a special place in our hearts, so we’re very excited Apple Music will be part of music and football’s biggest stage,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats, in a prepared statement. “We’re looking forward to even more epic performances next year and beyond with the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.”

Apple has in recent months shown a greater interest in sports. Its streaming platform has struck deals with Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer to show games to subscribers. Sports rights have long been the province of traditional media companies like Fox, Disney, Paramount Global and NBCUniversal, but technology companies like Apple and Amazon have made a bigger play for those rights as they seek to lure consumers to their new broadband subscription-video services. Amazon, for its part, is now a major NFL partner thanks to its control of rights to “Thursday Night Football.”

The first Super Bowl with Apple as the halftime sponsor will take place on Sunday, February 12, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona. Apple Music expects in coming months to offer sneak peeks of its ideas via its social handle, @AppleMusic, on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter.

“We couldn’t think of a more appropriate partner for the world’s most-watched musical performance than Apple Music, a service that entertains, inspires, and motivates millions of people around the world through the intersection of music and technology,” said Nana-Yaw Asamoah, senior vice president of partner strategy for the NFL, in a statement.

The league said more than 120 million viewers watched the halftime show that accompanied Super Bowl LVI. The extravaganza featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar, marking the first time these five artists performed together on stage. Under Pepsi, other halftime performances have included The Weeknd, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Bruno Mars.

But Pepsi said in May that it would not return as the halftime show’s sponsor in 2022, choosing to walk away from a decade-long association that moved the event away from a roster of primarily rock musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in favor of a new group of artists who are favored by the younger generations that advertisers and the NFL seek to court. The NFL was said to be seeking significantly higher annual payments for the sponsorship rights.

For years, each halftime show was treated largely one-off event, with a new sponsor coming in each year. Coca-Cola and Oscar Mayer were among the program’s earliest backers. In 2000, online broker E-Trade kicked off a three-year stint as the sponsor of the event. Tire manufacturer Bridgestone in 2008 aligned itself with the halftime program for five years, supporting The Who, The Black-Eyed Peas and Madonna, among others. Pepsi, which initially sponsored the halftime show for Super Bowl XLI in 2007, which featured Prince, launched its ten-year sponsorship of the mid-game performance in 2013.

Ajeeb Daastaans
Cast: Cast: Fatima Sana Shaikh, Jaideep Ahlawat, Arrman Ralhan (Majnu), Inayat Verma, Nushratt Bharruccha, Abhishek Banerjee (Khilauna), Konkana Sensharma, Aditi Rao Hydari (Geeli Pucchi), Shefali Shah, Manav Kaul (Ankahi)
Directors: Shashank Khaitan (Majnu), Raj Mehta (Khilauna), Neeraj Ghaywan (Geeli Pucchi), Kayoze Irani (Ankahi)

Netflix’s latest is a set of four short stories bunched together as Ajeeb Daastaans. These are a mix of tales that weave into them a sense of freshness and triumph. Admittedly, one of them, Raj Mehta’s Khilauna, ends as a sheer shocker. Another segment, Ankahi by Kayoze Irani, climaxes into a huge disappointment for the charecters, while Geeli Pucchi helmed by Neeraj Ghaywan leads us to what seems like a clever ploy to wrest an office position. Shashank Khaitan’s Majnu leaves us with a feel-good mood.

All the four in the anthology engage us, each imaginatively written and tightly scripted to tell us a tale in just about 30 minutes. Great, when we are made to sit through a plodding 160 minutes or so of often needless narration. Also, Ajeeb Daastaans has been mounted tastefully and performed by most actors to near perfection. There is a sense of authenticity, and the plots run with easy finesse.

Admittedly, Khilauna may be hard to digest, and I was left with this feeling, oh but can this happen! Barring this, the others are entirely believable. Majnu may appear passe; we have seen this in other films and web series, but the subtle performances help eclipse the lack of novelty here. And, the manner in which Geeli Pucchi underlines how a woman employee treated unfairly because of her Dalit background gets back at her boss is amazing. She does not abuse him. She does not beat him up, but like in a game of chess, she checkmates him. The best part is, he does not even realise it. This is what I call great writing.

Now for some plot details. The first, Majnu (Romeo) , is the story of unhappy marriage between the rich and royal Babloo (Jaideep Ahlawat) and the pretty Lipakshi (Fatima Sana Shaikh). But on the night of the wedding, he tells her not to expect him to consummate the relationship. Then what do I do, she quips. Please maintain the decorum of the family, he answers in an unfeeling tone. Young Lipakshi has her sexual urge, and naturally. So, she begins to stray. And when the handsome and dashing Raj Kumar (Arrman Ralhani) arrives armed with an ambition to study in England – and mind you he is the family driver’s son – Babloo starts feeling queasy. It is easy to guess how the narrative will flow, but the end is quite unexpected.

Khilauna (Toy) is a power-packed take on the social and economic disparities which are still rampant in what is arguably a modern India. Sushil (Abhishek Banerjee) is a street-side vendor who removes the creases of rich people’s clothes. But struggles to iron out the ripples in his own life. Nor can his lover, Meenal (Nushratt Bharruccha, too attractive to play a maid). Binny (Inayat Verma, and what a lovely performance), her seven-year-old daughter, is perky, and keeps asking all the wrong questions. What do you and Sushil do at night, she wants to know, and child’s mind is a sponge absorbing just about everything. But this cannot be a good thing.

Although, Geeli Pucchi (Wet Kisses) directed by Neeraj Ghaywan may appear to harp on lesbianism, the underlying message is all about the covert cruelty of caste prejudice, of how a Dalit woman, Bharti Mandal (portrayed by Konkana Sensharma), despite her good education and credentials, is barred from an office position that eventually goes to one from a higher caste. She is Priya Sharma (Aditi Rao Hydari), who finds that in an all-male set-up, the only other woman is Bharti. The two strike a friendship over shared lunch in the office canteen, and it soon turns out that their relationship is not what it looks like. Both are lesbians, and Priya is even married! In a very clever ploy, Bharti changes the rules of the game. Both Hydari and Sensharma are fantastic actors, and they infuse radiance into thel short. This gives a certain freshness to Geeli Pucchi.

Finally, Kayoze Irani’s Ankahi (Unsaid) also has a luminous cast in Shefali Shah, who as Natasha plays mother to a deaf-mute daughter, and Manav Kaul’s Kabir, a deaf-mute artist. Struggling within the confines of a marriage where the man is indifferent to her needs and uncaring towards the girl, Natasha falls into the arms of Kabir, pretending to be deaf-mute as well. The end reminded me of the George Clooney starrer, Up in the Air, where he is rattled find his lover in a totally different avatar.

A final decision has been made that Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson will be promoted for awards recognition in different acting categories — Farrell for lead actor and Gleeson for supporting actor — for their work in Martin McDonagh’s Searchlight film The Banshees of Inisherin, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.

The film, which elicited rave reviews and Oscar buzz following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival (where it received a 12-minute standing ovation) and North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, centers on two best friends whose relationship is suddenly terminated by one (Gleeson), prompting considerable distress for the other (Farrell).

Some felt both Farrell and Gleeson should be campaigned as lead actors, but all parties weighed in and a conclusion was reached that Farrell is the film’s lead and Gleeson, with less screen time, supports him. (This approach also decreases the likelihood of the two canceling each other out in voting, a concern for other films with multiple performers potentially competing in the same category or categories, including The Woman King, The Fabelmans and Women Talking.)

Neither Farrell, 46, nor Gleeson, 67, has ever been Oscar-nominated before. The two previously co-starred in another McDonagh film, 2008’s In Bruges, for which both received lead actor Golden Globe nominations.

It was announced on Wednesday that Gleeson will host Saturday Night Live for the first time on Oct. 8, ahead of Inisherin’s limited theatrical release on Oct. 21.

Beach House will replace Iggy Pop as the final night headliner at the upcoming Desert Daze festival near Lake Perris, Calif., after Pop’s French-based band was unable to enter the United States due to visa complications. The performance was to be Pop’s only one in North America this year.

“I am disappointed to announce the cancellation of my appearance at the Desert Daze Festival,” says Pop. “Due to a confluence of world events, we have had unprecedented visa issues for my French band way beyond our control, and the band can’t enter the United States in time for the date. I am frustrated to let my U.S. fans down. I’ve left no stone unturned to be there with you on October 2nd, but now I can only plan to play this wonderful festival again in the future.”

Pop’s next album was produced by Andrew Watt and features appearances by Pearl Jam touring multi-instrumentalist Josh Klinghoffer and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. No details about its release have yet been made available.

As previously reported, Desert Daze will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 2 and is headlined by King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard and Tame Impala, the latter performing its landmark sophomore album Lonerism in its entirety.

The bill will be rounded out by Men I Trust, BADBADNOTGOOD, Cymande, Kikagaku Moyo, Reggie Watts, Pond, Fuzz, Perfume Genius and Chicano Batman, among many others.

Manhattan’s Downtown Community Television Center celebrated the opening of the media arts center’s long-anticipated nonprofit, 67-seat movie theater, Firehouse: DCTV’s Cinema for Documentary Film, on Tuesday.

The only movie theater in New York City dedicated to screening documentaries, Firehouse is an official Academy Award-qualifying theater that will screen first-run films and curated programs.

On Sept. 23, Abigail Disney and Kathleen Hughes’ self-distributed “The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales” about the growing inequalities in America and better pay for Disneyland cast members, will be the inaugural docu to play at Firehouse cinema. The week-long screening will serve as the film’s qualifying run in New York. Disney is set to appear in person for opening weekend Q&As.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Disney said, “It takes courage to poke big Mouse in the eye, and you (Firehouse) are doing it right out of the gate.”

Located in a landmarked firehouse building in Manhattan’s Chinatown, Firehouse cinema was funded by New York state and city. The project was conceived over two decades ago and took approximately two years to complete.

Co-founded in 1972 by Academy Award-nominated docu filmmaker Jon Alpert (“Life of Crime 1984-2020”) and his wife, doc producer Keiko Tsuno, DCTV has supported documentary filmmakers for the last 50 years. The center dedicated to docs helps produce nonfiction projects and hosts community screenings, discussions, youth media, and continuing education programs.

“This is the temple for documentary filmmaking,” Alpert said at Tuesday’s ceremony. “Documentary films for years did not get the respect that they deserved. This is a moment when documentary films are flourishing, and this a place to meet with members of the documentary community to really honor all of the documentary filmmakers that we have.”

Alpert and Tsuno serve as the organization’s co-executive directors. Dara Messinger, DCTV’s long-time director of programming, will oversee the theater’s first-run and curated programming.

“I’m excited to champion all different types of filmmakers making new and exciting work,” said Messinger. “I want to diversify the amount of makers and different perspectives that we can be showing in the documentary. I love having a space where people can see things that they can’t see elsewhere. And even if they can see films we screen elsewhere, they can come here and be part of a community and share this space together.”

After screening “The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales,” Firehouse will host exclusive runs of first-run docs, including two Sundance 2022 nonfiction films: Reid Davenport’s “I Didn’t See You There,” about everyday life from the disabled filmmaker’s point of view, and Nina Menkes’ “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power,” an examination of the male gaze through cinema history.

In addition to first-run films, Firehouse will also be curating specialty programming year-round. This fall will feature special events with documentary filmmakers, including Laura Poitras, Barbara Kopple, Stanley Nelson, and Jessica Kingdon. Also, this fall, a Firehouse-based series titled “Better Together” will showcase documentary short films from Vimeo and New York-based production houses including Field of Vision, and Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective.

Firehouse will be the official New York City host for the Intl. Documentary Association’s DocuClub, the organization’s work-in-progress screening series, as well as the IDA’s biennial Getting Real documentary conference.

Later in the year, in tribute to DCTV’s 50-year history, a “DCTV @ 50” repertory series will showcase DCTV’s productions, including early work from founders Alpert and Tsuno.

“The documentary form continues to evolve in new and exciting ways,” Messinger said. “The work we screen at Firehouse will showcase a plethora of perspectives that challenge power and ways of seeing and understanding.”

Manhattan’s Downtown Community Television Center celebrated the

The Jackson, Mississippi, water crisis this summer is a troubling reminder that some American communities are still failing to provide safe water to their residents. After Jackson’s primary water treatment plant failed, around 180,000 people were left with little or no sanitary water. It was reminiscent of the crisis in Flint, Michigan, which rose to broad public awareness in 2015, when residents learned that they’d been poisoned for months by drinking water containing bacteria, disinfectant byproducts, and lead.

The crisis is far from a distant memory in Flint. According to a new survey of nearly 2,000 adult community members published in JAMA Network Open on Sept. 20, residents were still struggling from the enduring mental health impact of the crisis, five years later. After conducting a survey from 2019 to 2020, the researchers estimated that in the year before the survey, about one in five Flint residents presumptively experienced major depression, while a quarter had PTSD, and one in 10 had both illnesses. Those who believed that they or their families were hurt by the contaminated water were significantly more likely to be affected. The authors note that lead itself can impact mental health, including mood.

Flint residents, who are largely low-income and people of color, were already vulnerable to mental-health issues, including because of systemic racism, a shortage of quality affordable housing, and widespread poverty. However, the researchers found evidence that the water crisis itself had a lasting mental health impact. For instance, 41% of respondents said they’d felt mental or emotional problems related to their concerns about water contamination. Flint residents were more than twice as likely to have had major depression compared to the general population rate in Michigan, U.S., or the world, and were twice as likely to have PTSD compared to veterans after deployment, according to the study.

The way the water crisis unfolded made Flint residents particularly vulnerable to long-term mental-health effects, the researchers say. One major problem is that public officials’ decisions caused the water crisis in 2014, when they switched the city to untreated water from the Flint River. Even after health care workers raised alarms about high levels of lead in children’s blood, officials misled the public by insisting that the water was safe. “Feelings that the community is not being looked after, or it’s in fact being abandoned, add an additional layer of stress,” says Aaron Reuben, a co-author of the new study and postdoctoral scholar at Duke University and the Medical University of South Carolina.

A lack of resources can also compound anxiety. Lottie Ferguson, the chief resilience officer for the City of Flint, noted that food insecurity made it harder for residents to eat a healthy diet rich with foods that mitigate the effects of lead toxicity. Ferguson, who worked in Flint during the crisis and whose children were exposed to lead, says that she felt for parents who didn’t have the same resources as her family. “I was more upset and more hurt for parents who didn’t have access to resources to ensure the futures of their children,” she says, adding that she understands why mistrust of officials is still common in Flint.

Also complicating the situation: the water crisis dragged on for a long period of time. Although the water supply was switched back to its original source in October 2015, lead levels didn’t drop below the federal limit until January 2017. That’s left Flint residents with a lasting sense of uncertainty about their health and safety. “It wasn’t like a hurricane that came and went, and then you rebuild,” says Lauren Tompkins, the former vice president of clinical operations at Genesee Health System, a nonprofit health care organization in Flint. She coordinated the emergency mental health resources available to residents in response to the crisis. “The pipes took quite some number of years to fix. So you’re just constantly in this state, for a long period of time, of worrying.”

In many ways, the water crisis has yet to end. For instance, researchers have described a rise in hyperactivity and learning delays among children. Residents still don’t know for sure how deeply they and their families were affected by the polluted water, and whether it triggered health problems they’re experiencing now. They also don’t know if new health issues will suddenly appear in the future.

That’s similar to what happened after the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania in 1979, says study co-author Dean G. Kilpatrick, a professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina, who researches PTSD and traumatic events. Although locals weren’t exposed to dangerous levels of radiation, the fear that they would be led to lasting mental health harm. “If something’s invisible, tasteless, you can’t really tell if you’ve got it or not,” says Kilpatrick. “Even the perception that you might have been exposed to something, in and of itself, is sufficient to drive a lot of long-term mental-health effects.”

With the help of outside funding and assistance, Flint community members expanded mental-health offerings in Flint, both during the initial crisis and the years that followed. However, only 34.8% of respondents said they were offered mental-health services for symptoms related to the crisis, although 79.3% of those who were offered services took advantage of them. The study’s authors argue that their findings indicate Flint still needs a greater mental health response from the local, state, and federal government. There are also important lessons for other cities enduring water crises, including Jackson—such as how important it is to provide the public with clear, accurate information.

Overall, says Reuben, it’s essential to recognize that crises like what happened in Flint can have an enduring impact on mental health. In Jackson, “We want the community to know we’re thinking about them, and we’re going to think about their mental health,” he says. “Not just once the taps run clear, but potentially for years after.”

EXCLUSIVE: The biggest TV project to hit the marketplace in quite a while has landed with the biggest series commitment in quite a while. Apple TV+ has nabbed the new show from Breaking Bad creator and Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan, which will has Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn attached to play the lead. The untitled project, described as a blended, grounded genre drama, has received a two-season straight-to-series order from the streamer.

Hailing from Gilligan’s longtime studio home, Sony Pictures Television, the new series marks Gilligan’s followup to the back-to-back critical and ratings hits Breaking Bad and prequel Better Call Saul. It also marks Gilligan’s second collaboration with Better Call Saul star Seehorn, who landed a 2022 Emmy nomination for her acclaimed performance on the show.

Gilligan will serve as showrunner and executive produce through his High Bridge Productions. Former Sony Pictures TV President Jeff Frost, who oversaw the project prior to recently stepping down from his executive post, will also executive produce, along with Diane Mercer. Jenn Carroll is producing for High Bridge Productions.

As Deadline reported exclusively last month, there was a lot of anticipation for Gilligan’s pitch, with at least 8-9 networks and platforms lined up to hear it and read his script. There were multiple rounds of bidding for the project, which I hear was seeking a series order and a budget in the vicinity $13.5M-$15M an episode — on the high end for a premium drama with significant genre elements but not in the jaw-dropping $20M+ an episode range for shows like LOTR: The Rings Of Power, House of the Dragon or the now-shelved Demimonde.

Apple TV+, which showed great enthusiasm for the project and pursued it aggressively, had been considered a strong contender from the start because of toppers Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht’s longstanding relationship with Gilligan. As Sony Pictures Television Presidents, Van Amburg and Erlicht spearheaded and sold both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. At Apple TV+, Gilligan also will reunite with former former SPT Studios co-President Chris Parnell, now a senior TV programming executive at the streamer. (Other outlets that I hear were in contention for the series included Amazon and Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul network AMC.)

“After fifteen years, I figured it was time to take a break from writing antiheroes… and who’s more heroic than the brilliant Rhea Seehorn? It’s long past time she had her own show, and I feel lucky to get to work on it with her,” said Gilligan. “And what nice symmetry to be reunited with Zack Van Amburg, Jamie Erlicht and Chris Parnell! Jamie and Zack were the first two people to say yes to Breaking Bad all those years ago. They’ve built a great team at Apple, and my wonderful, long-time partners at Sony Pictures Television and I are excited to be in business with them.”

Per usual, Gilligan would not divulge details about the premise of his show.

As Deadline previously reported, the show is believed to be a departure from the world of drugs and crime he explored in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, whose series finale aired last month.

Compared to The Twilight Zone, the new series is said to be set in our world while putting a tweak on it, bending reality and focusing on people and exploring the human condition in an unexpected, surprising way. Thought-provoking but not a morality tale, the series also is expected to carry the signature Gilligan tone that infuses drama with humor.

One of the most celebrated TV creators of his generation, Gilligan created and executive produced AMC’s acclaimed Breaking Bad, which won two Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series. He is co-creator/executive producer, alongside Peter Gould, of the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul, which also has been an awards juggernaut, amassing 46 Emmy nominations to date, seven of them this year, including Outstanding Drama Series. Gilligan also earned multiple Emmy nominations for his work on The X-Files. He is repped by CAA and Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka.

In addition to Better Call Saul, Seehorn’s credits include Veep, Things Heard and Seen, and the soon-to-be-released films Linoleum and Wyrm. Seehorn was also Emmy nominated for actress in a short form digital series for Cooper’s Bar, on which she directs and exec produced. She is repped by Untitled Entertainment, UTA and Viewpoint.

EXCLUSIVE: The biggest TV project to hit

Someone has leaked the latest version of LockBit’s encryptor to the internet, and while at first it might seem like a data breach and theft, the ransomware operator’s public representative claims it’s actually the work of a disgruntled developer.

A brand new Twitter account named Ali Qushji claimed their team hacked the servers of LockBit and found a builder for the LockBit 3.0 ransomware encryptor. Following the tweet, malware source code library VX-Underground chimed in, saying they were contacted by a user named “protonleaks” on September 10, with the same content.

The same source also said that LockBitSupp, the public representative of the LockBit operation, confirmed that this was not the work of a hacking group, but rather a disgruntled developer, unsatisfied with the ransomware operator’s leadership.

Upset with leadership

“We reached out to Lockbit ransomware group regarding this and discovered this leaker was a programmer employed by Lockbit ransomware group,” VX-Underground tweeted (and subsequently deleted the tweet). “They were upset with Lockbit leadership and leaked the builder.”

BleepingComputer has since confirmed the authenticity of the leak, stating it’s the LockBit 3.0 encryptor’s builder, codenamed LockBit Black, that was leaked. The version, that’s been in the testing phase for two months leading up to June, came with a number of new features, including anti-analysis, a ransomware bug bounty program, and new methods of extortion.

Leaking the builder doesn’t mean whoever gets infected with LockBit can now easily decrypt the hijacked data. Instead, it means that other threat actors can compile their own versions with ease, tweaking various configuration options, the ransom note, and other details. While that might hurt LockBit’s operations to some extent, it also means that organizations could soon be facing an even bigger number of ransomware strains.

This is not the first time an encryptor’s source code leaked online. At the start of Russia’s invasion on Ukraine, a hacker leaked Conti’s source code, a ransomware group that publicly supported the invasion at the time.

There is a major change coming to the entertainment industry. Companies are beginning to expand the way in which they engage with their audiences through new emerging technologies such as virtual reality. One of the tech companies leading the charge toward a more immersive world is Meta.

Most recently, Meta Horizon Worlds and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions joined forces to bring immersive technology to fans of Peele’s recent film “Nope.” It’s hard to understate the importance of being able to truly connect content with fans, according to Keisha Senter, Monkeypaw vice president of culture and impact.

“It’s just another avenue in and another channel to introduce people to your content, new content that you’re rolling out like ‘Nope.’ And so, I think that’s just another way to connect with the audience, another way to meet people where they are,” Senter said at the Variety Entertainment & Technology Summit sponsored by Meta.

Not only is it integral for building fandom, but it’s equally beneficial for the creators, according to Omar Zayat, who leads industry and entertainment for Meta’s global business group.

“It was not just the consumer experience,” he said. “They saw the value, and they had this bold vision for the metaverse ecosystem as a whole, especially around creators. And they had this really great notion of this is a way for us to create economic opportunity, not just in the metaverse, but for the creators that help build it, this incredible next generation of talent.”

Zayat also announced a “high-impact, high-frequency ad solution” called Meta Moment Maker.

“Through this campaign, the results we saw were pretty incredible,” he said. “It positive lifted NRG brand intent. We know that often when you see a lift in intents, it correlates to great box office sales. We saw those NRG metrics go up. We also saw incremental lift in conversations and we saw a double-digit lift in audience reached. We were able to use the entire breadth of the Meta platform to really bring this to life and see it on a whole other level of scale that had been done before.”

Though the emergence of immersive tech has its benefits, there are still some barriers to entry. For example, the “Nope” world is only accessible for those who have access to the Meta Quest 2 headset. However, Zayat noted that the company is focused on increasing accessibility in the future on other devices such as desktops and mobile.

This is just the beginning for Monkeypaw and Meta Horizon Worlds. Senter mentioned that immersive worlds adapted from Peele’s other films, “Get Out” and “Us,” launched on Tuesday.

“Days of Our Lives” has promoted publicist Lia Maiuri to Vice President of Communications.

The new role will have her tasked with overseeing publicity, talent relations, social and promotional marketing for “Days of Our Lives” and any spin-offs or movies, the show’s creator and executive producer Ken Corday announced Wednesday.

“As we have embarked on a new venture of transitioning from NBC after 57 years to Peacock, Lia has handled the move with grace and passion,” Corday told TheWrap. “Her desire to bring our loyal fanbase on board the new streaming platform, while also captivating new subscribers, has been unparalleled. It is only fitting that she is promoted to VP of Communications.”

Maiuri joined NBC Entertainment in 2016 as a publicist, handling the press campaigns for TV series and films including “Days of our Lives,” “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med,” “The Voice,” “America’s Got Talent” and “Will & Grace.” In addition, she served as press coordinator for “The Real Housewives of Orange County” (Bravo), “Van Helsing,” “SurrealEstate,” “Slumber Party Massacre” (SYFY) and “Nash Bridges the Movie” (USA). She was also heavily involved in the press campaign and day-to-day publicity for “This Is Us,” beginning from the show’s development.

After serving as Director of Communications for “Days” since June 2021, in her expanded role as VP, Maiuri is spearheading the press launch and transition of the 57-year-old daytime drama’s move from NBC to Peacock, as well as overseeing publicity and talent relations for any series spin-offs or movies, including “Days of our Lives: A Very Salem Christmas.”

In her free time, Maiuri mentors young women recently out of college, advising and guiding them in finding a career path in the entertainment industry.

Maha Haj’s drama Mediterranean Fever, which world premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard this year, has been selected as Palestine’s official entry in the best international film category.

A committee consisting of Palestinian film professionals, overseen by the country’s Ministry of Culture, made their choice earlier this week.

The Haifa-set drama co-stars Amer Hiehel as Waleed, an aspiring writer suffering from chronic depression who cultivates a relationship with a petty criminal neighbor (Ashraf Fara), but with a sinister ulterior motive.

The film is Haj’s second feature after Personal Affairs, which also debuted in Un Certain Regard in 2016.

The filmmaker has explained that the character of Waleed is a reflection of her own dark side and the frustrations of Palestinians living in Israel. One-third of the population of the port city of Haifa, which has been part of Israel since 1948, is Palestinian.

Producers on Mediterranean Fever are Baher Aghbariya at Haifa-based Majdal Films; Germany’s Thanassis Karathanos and Martin Hampel at Pallas Film; France’s Juliette Lepoutre and Pierre Menahem at Still Moving, and Marios Piperides, Janine Teerling at Cyprus-based Amp Filmworks.

Key backers include Germany’s Metteldeutsche Medienforderung film fund , Eurimages, the Cypriot Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, La Région Île-de-France, Doha Film Institute, Arab Fund for Arts and Culture and France’s l’Aide aux cinémas du monde fund.

Paris-based Luxbox handles international sales.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first recognized Palestine as a territory in 2003 and since then there have been 15 Palestinian submissions including Mediterranean Fever.

To date, Palestine has scored two nominations for Hany Abu Assad’s Omar and Paradise Now in 2005 and 2013 respectively.

Nigerian artist Wizkid is set to perform at the Roundhouse in London in collaboration with Apple Music Live, debuting songs from his anticipated fifth studio album. London fans will have the exclusive opportunity to attend the live taping on Sept. 27, but the Grammy-winning musician’s performance will also be available to stream in 165 countries this fall.

“Apple Music has always been a supporter of my career and a major tool in connecting me with my fans. Collaborating with them on something like this is special,” the “Essence” singer said in a release. “I’m excited to debut new music from my forthcoming album More Love, Less Ego and share my Apple Music Live show with fans across the world.”

The Afrobeat artist dropped his first solo track of 2022 “Bad to Me” last week, teasing his next album, due Oct. 29. The track departs from the sensual production of his last album, Made In Lagos, in favor of an amapiano-based beat.

Wizkid is no stranger to London: He sold out five shows in the city’s O2 arena last year. He’s also the first African solo artist to enter Apple Music’s Global Daily Top 10 after charting internationally with hit single “Essence.”

Wizkid made history with his album Made in Lagos, the first African album to be RIAA-certified gold last month. With this event, he joins the likes of Harry Styles, Mary J. Blige and Lil Durk, other artists who’ve collaborated with Apple Music to offer exclusive live performances.

The Taliban have announced that they will ban TikTok because it promotes violence despite their fighters sharing battlefield atrocities to spread fear among their enemies on the platform.

Taliban’s ministry of telecommunication said the popular app as well as PUBG, an online game, will be banned in the country within weeks.

‘TikTok has been spreading immoral and non Islamic content and videos in an Islamic country among the very vulnerable youths of Afghanistan, and we have to block it for the sake of our youths’ future,’ a Taliban official told MailOnline.

‘They are just devastating our young people by advertising western life style. We are living in an Islamic country and these platforms have been spreading contents against it,’ he said.

‘Facebook is also spreading same kind of content. Our youths are wasting lost of time on that. It’s our duty to take care of young people,’ the official said.

Internet providers were informed that they have next 30 days as ‘the deadline’ to ban TikTok, ministry of telecommunication said in a statement.

People will be blocked from being able to use the popular apps in the country.

The new rulers of Afghanistan announced the decision in a meeting with the representatives of security sectors and a representative from the Sharia law enforcement administration.

It comes after recent bans on music, movies and television soap operas which saw the Taliban destroying musical instruments.

Afghanistan’s telecommunication and internet service providers have shared the information regards the ban and have been asked to follow the guidelines within the stipulated time.

It comes as Taliban fighters use social media to share their battlefield atrocities to spread fear among their enemies.

A video filmed and shared on the Taliban’s social media accounts shows a group of five blindfolded fighters who have their hands tied behind them before they are executed by cheering members of the Taliban.

They have also banned TV channels from airing what it deemed as ‘immoral material’ and some channel have even been told that they cannot foreign films and shows.

Earlier, the Taliban have said that they blocked more than 23 million websites for displaying what they consider ‘immoral’ content over the year since the Taliban took power in the country,

‘We have blocked 23.4 million websites. They are changing their pages every time. So, when you block one website another one will be active,’ Najibullah Haqqani, Taliban’s minister of communications said in a conference last month.

Speaking at the same conference, the deputy communications minister, Ahmad Masoud Latif Rai, also criticised Facebook for its reluctance to cooperate with the Taliban authorities on content moderation.

After the collapse of the US-backed government and the withdrawal of US troops from the country, an interim Afghan government led by the Taliban came to power on August 15 last year.

The Taliban takeover triggered an economic crisis and food shortages that have pushed the country to the brink of a humanitarian crisis.

Taliban fighters celebrate one year since they seized the Afghan capital, Kabul, in front of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday, Aug. 15, 2022

According to international media freedom organisations more than 300 Afghan news outlets have closed since the Taliban took over Kabul again in the summer of 2021.

Over a thousand reporters have lost their jobs, and hundreds of them have left the country, fearing the Taliban’s revenge as the new rulers of Afghanistan had labelled journalists as their ‘enemy.’

Afghanistan’s thriving media sector, which had been one of the biggest achievements of 20 years of international community presence, is now falling.

They banned women from appearing in dramas and ordered channels to stop broadcasting foreign tv dramas, including those produced in Islamic countries like Iran.

In May Afghanistan’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada issued a diktat for women to cover up fully in public, including their faces, ideally with the traditional burqa.

The feared Ministry for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice ordered women television presenters to follow suit.

The new film, which stars de Armas, 34, as Monroe, who died in 1962 at the age of 36, premieres on Netflix this Friday and is based on a work of fiction. The actress told AnOther magazine that on the first day of filming for Blonde , she went to Westwood Village Memorial Park and laid a handwritten letter on Marilyn Monroe’s grave.

The whole crew contributed to a large card in which we all sent our best wishes to her. We took it to the cemetery, she added and placed it over her grave. In a sense, we were seeking approval. We all felt an enormous weight of duty, and we all knew which side of the story we were going to present when it came to the life of Norma Jeane, the real-life inspiration for Marilyn Monroe. When pressed, she would not reveal her true identity.

The controversial NC-17 film, based on Joyce Carol Oates’s 2000 novel of the same name, has been criticized for its fictionalized portrayal of Monroe. De Armas defended the finished result, noting that director Andrew Dominik was deliberate from the start.

The moment I met Andrew, I had complete confidence that he would look after her. According to de Armas, the film is unapologetic, brave, and feminist because it explores topics such as the abortion’s point of view, a depressed mother and how a child copes with that, the desire of all these men over Marilyn, the way they look at her like meat like a room-service delivery, and, yes, the way she allows herself to fall in love and be disappointed again.

Andrew doesn’t shy away from showing his suffering, his nakedness, and his vulnerability. People keep saying to me, “Oh my god, this scene is too long!” And I think, Well, absolutely, and now you can probably understand how she felt.

Donald Trump gave Sean Hannity an exclusive interview on Wednesday — naturally it’s one of many ‘exclusive’ interviews he’s given to one of his best friends in media — and during their conversation Trump made a ludicrous, and extremely false assertion about how classified documents are handled.

You all reading this obviously know all about the raid on Mar-a-Lago that recovered numerous classified documents that Trump illegally removed from the White House and then repeatedly lied to the government about, right? Good. Moving on.

Now obviously Hannity is famously and very openly a Trump supporter. So much so that he was involved in a lot of secret conversations about Trump’s attempts to violently overturn the results of the 2020 election. (Hannity eventually advised against the actions that led to Jan. 6, after initially supporting them.)

Hannity noted that the President of the United States has the authority to declassify documents and said, “you have said on Truth Social that you did declassify” those documents.”

“I did declassify,” Trump interjected.

“OK, is there a process? What is the process,” Hannity asked.

“There doesn’t have to be a process, as I understand it. You know there are different people say different things,” Trump said. “But as I understand there doesn’t have to be. You’re the president of the United States, you can declassify just by saying ‘it’s declassified,’ even by thinking about it. Because you sending it, to Mar-a-Lago, or wherever you’re sending it, and there doesn’t have to be a process, there can be a process, but there doesn’t have to be.”

It goes on from there, including a ridiculous moment when Trump says “I declassified everything.” But we just wanted to emphasize the most obvious nonsense claim he made. You can watch the whole clip above. And also, yes, there actually does have to be a process. Read more about it here.

See the fictional school attended by Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Morticia Addams and Edgar Allen Poe in the Netflix series.

Ever dreamed of being part of the Addams Family? Well, thanks to the ultimate back-to-school campaign, Netflix fans can join Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) at supernatural school Nevermore Academy.

“Have you ever been told you’re different? Odd? Or simply don’t belong?” the official website for the fictional elite prep school pledged. “In a world full of Normies, do you feel like an Outcast? If yes, there’s a very special place for people just like you…Nevermore Academy. Apply for admittance to Nevermore Academy where Outcasts of all kinds are welcome. Learn about the school’s notable alumni including Edgar Allan Poe and Morticia Addams, meet students currently enrolled at Nevermore and find out more about the school’s unique activities and events.”

Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie) also narrates a short video for potential applicants, and students share what it’s like to be taught by the best of the best at Nevermore.

“Nevermore is a safe haven for our students to learn and grow no matter who they are,” Principal Weems says. “For over 200 years we have welcomed Outcasts of all kinds — werewolves, vampires, sirens and gorgons. As Principal, it is my honor to announce that Nevermore is now accepting applications from everybody. I extend my personal invitation to each and every one of you to apply to our very unique school.”

Fans can additionally take a short quiz to determine if the academy is the right school for them. As the website states, “Notifications will be mailed out to the chosen few who are admitted to Nevermore this fall.”

The “Wednesday” series centers on the 16-year-old prodigy as she harnesses her budding psychic ability to solve a serial killer case and unlock the murder mystery that involved her parents 25 years ago. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán play Morticia and Gomez Addams, with Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, Victor Dorobantu as Thing, and George Burcea as Lurch.

Per Netflix, Nevermore Academy was founded in 1791 to provide an educational haven for the supernaturally gifted Outcasts of the world. Named in honor of its most famous graduate, Edgar Allan Poe, the boarding school is home to werewolves, vampires, sirens, gorgons, and a spectrum of other students with uniquely chilling gifts. Nestled in the secluded woods of New England, the school grounds are just a brisk 25-minute walk away from the picturesque town of Jericho, one of the original Pilgrim settlements.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers for the series, premiering this fall on Netflix. Burton directs and executive produces, along with Steve Stark, Andrew Mittman, Kevin Miserocchi, Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman, Gail Berman, Tommy Harper, and Kevin Lafferty.

Original “Addams Family” live-action star Christina Ricci also plays a supporting role on the series as Marilyn Thornhill.

Passion projects can go all sorts of wrong ways, but Lena Dunham has made something of a triumph in “ Catherine Called Birdy,” a medieval coming-of-age story that’s part “Bridget Jones’s Diary,“ part Mel Brooks and all joy.

The film is based on a book she discovered at age 10, when she was an angsty fourth grader in New York City. She found a kind of comfort and coziness in Karen Cushman’s Newbery Honor-winning novel about a spirited 14-year-old living in the year 1290 in the English countryside. There is nothing quite like historical fiction to light up the imagination of a young girl feeling out of touch with her own moment. As Dunham got older, she found herself relating to more than just Lady Catherine — she empathized with the mother, the nurse, the friend and the older widow. Her adaptation, which she wrote and directed, manages to encompass all of that youthful naivete and hard-earned wisdom in a smart, entertaining package that is both modern and nostalgic and skillfully evokes that coziness that Dunham described feeling so many years ago.

Catherine, or Birdy, is a classic young adult heroine brought beautifully to life by Bella Ramsey, a talented young actor who didn’t get to show off her wonderful comedic chops as Lyanna Mormont on “Game of Thrones.” We’re introduced to Birdy in the waning days of her privileged adolescence, living with her family, her mother Lady Aislinn (Billie Piper), her father Lord Rollo (Andrew Scott), her brother Robert (Dean-Charles Chapman) and her nurse Morwenna (Lesley Sharp) at Stonebridge Manor where the only riches this once great family seems to have left is the value of their titles. She longs to fight in the crusades like her handsome Uncle George (Joe Alwyn) or be a monk like her other brother (who is more fun than most monks, she promises) — basically anything but being a wife and mother which is all she’s allowed to do.

Much to her horror, she’ll discover that her father’s plan to save them from financial ruin is to marry her off to the highest bidder, leading to some amusing montages of the ways she attempts to sabotage the matches. The film lures you into this anachronistic world with a soundtrack of 1990s cover songs and a “Fleabag”-like irreverence that many recent projects have tried and failed to mimic. But Dunham’s script, and her actors, are up to the task of melding the old and the new without resorting to inserting Instagram-speak into the script like Mad Libs.

Certainly there’s nothing new in a story about a young lady, be it in the 13th or 21st century, being asked by society and her parents to live a life that she doesn’t want, but Dunham is wise enough to not make the looming marriage be the only thing. This is a film that is much more concerned with family, friendship and the heartbreak of growing up. In this way, the emotion of it all sneaks up on you. It lures you in with comedy, wit and irreverence and before you know it, you’re reaching for the tissues and wondering when you came to care so much about the father-daughter relationship.

Aside from her essays, it is maybe the best thing that Dunham has done and makes me excited for what’s to come now that the world isn’t constantly asking her to apologize for her early successes and upbringing.

That Dunham held on to the dream of making “Catherine Called Birdy” for so long is equally incredible, especially in an industry that only once in a while lets women make things that meant something to them as girls that weren’t written by Jane Austen or called “Little Women.” And I suspect that quite a few precocious young girls will find similar comfort in Dunham’s movie.

Don’t get the wrong idea, though: “Catherine Called Birdy” is an unabashed delight for everyone. It just might run a little deeper for a certain age group.

“Catherine Called Birdy,” an Amazon Studios release in theaters Friday and on Prime Video Oct. 7, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association for “some suggestive material and thematic elements.” Running time: 108 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

MPA Definition of PG-13: Parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (or simply Goosebumps 2 as marketed on home release) is a 2018 American horror comedy film directed by Ari Sandel and written by Rob Lieber from a story by Lieber and Darren Lemke. It’s stand-alone sequel that does not feature any of the original cast of 2015’s Goosebumps, except for Jack Black who reprises the role of R. L. Stine the actual writer of the children’s horror book series the film is based on.

The new cast consists of Wendi McLendon-Covey, Madison Iseman, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Caleel Harris, Chris Parnell, and Ken Jeong. The plot follows two young boys who accidentally release the monsters from the Goosebumps franchise in their town after opening an unpublished Goosebumps manuscript titled Haunted Halloween, causing a wave of destruction on Halloween night. Unlike the previous installment, Village Roadshow Pictures was not involved with the film and it was not presented in 3D.

IMDb SYNOPSIS: Two young friends find a magic book that brings a ventriloquist’s dummy to life.

BOX OFFICE RELEASE: The film was released in the United States on October 12, 2018, and released in the United Kingdom on October 19, 2018, by Sony Pictures Releasing under its Columbia Pictures label. The film received mixed reviews from critics, and was not as successful as its predecessor, grossing $46.7 million in the United States and Canada, and $46.6 million in other territories, for a total worldwide gross of $93.3 million, against a production budget of $35 million.

DVD/BLU-RAY/4K UHD RELEASE: The film was released on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD on January 15, 2019.

MY REVIEW: I read a lot of people didn’t like this sequel and it didn’t perform as well as the original but I guess I’m a big Halloween whore because I fucking loved this film way more than the first one. Just so much Halloween atmosphere, fun story and great characters.

My favorite scene (animated GIF) is below which could be a Halloween III (1982) homage with the three kids wearing witch, jack o lantern and skull masks that resemble the Silver Shamrock Masks from my favorite Halloween franchise sequel. Pretty cool if that’s what they were referencing. I rate the film 3 out of 4 Halloween masks – Good:

“I didn’t really chit chat with everybody on set,” Barrymore said. “I just really stayed in character.”

Drew Barrymore is chiming in on the method acting debate.

The “Drew Barrymore Show” host revealed that she practiced method acting when starring in critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning made-for-TV biopic “Grey Gardens” opposite Jessica Lange as Edie Beale. The 2009 drama won multiple Emmys, including Outstanding Made-for-TV Movie and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for Lange; Barrymore was also nominated for the award in the mother-daughter dynamic.

During the September 20 episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” the “Wedding Singer” alum applauded actors who “transform and fully commit” to roles, citing Christian Bale, Jared Leto, and Matthew McConaughey as method actors she admires (via Decider).

“I definitely, on certain projects, like when I did ‘Grey Gardens,’ this film I did where I played beloved real-life woman Edie Beale, I was so nervous I didn’t really chit-chat with everybody on set,” Barrymore said of her transformative technique. “I just really stayed in character.”

Barrymore teased that Andrew Garfield, who recently revealed he went without sex for six months when preparing to play a priest in Martin Scorsese’s 2016 film “Silence,” did not undergo a big enough sacrifice for the role.

“What’s wrong with me that six months doesn’t seem like a very long time?” Barrymore said. “I was like, ‘Yeah so?’”

Garfield previously defended the practice of method acting, weighing in that the oft-debated controversial approach isn’t about being an “arsehole” to co-stars and crew members.

“I’m kind of bothered by the misconception, I’m kind of bothered by this idea that ‘method acting is bullshit,’” Oscar nominee Garfield shared on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast. “It’s like, no I don’t think you know what method acting is if you’re calling it bullshit, or you’ve just worked with someone who claims to be a method actor but who actually isn’t acting in the method at all.”

Garfield clarified, “People are still acting in that way, and it’s not about being an arsehole to everyone on set. It’s actually just about living truthfully under imagined circumstances and being really nice to the crew simultaneously and being a normal human being and being able to drop it when you need to, and staying in it when you want to stay in it.”

The “Tick, Tick, Boom” actor said that the “process to create” is “very private,” especially when it comes to employing method acting techniques.

“I don’t want people to fucking see the pipes of my toilet. I don’t want people to see how I’m making the sausage,” Garfield said. “But it really, really is profound work.”

Narco Saints season 1 is available to stream on Netflix

Narco-Saints is another successful k-drama to add to Netflix’s expanding library of Korean content. But has the k-drama been renewed for a second season? Not yet, and unless there are plans to take the story beyond its real-life inspiration, renewal is increasingly unlikely.

With another successful k-drama in its filmography, Netflix continues to impress with its output of Korean content.

Narco-Saints is a South Korean crime-thriller series written and directed by Yoon Jong Bin, starring Squid Game actor Park Hea Soo. Despite ‘Narco’ being present in the title, the series has no association with the beloved Netflix franchise Narcos. For the majority of the k-drama’s production, it was titled The Accidental Narco before eventually switching to Narco-Saints.

Based on true events, Narco-Saints takes place in South America, where a drug lord operating in the country has grabbed the attention of the National Intelligence Service. The intelligence service enlists the help of an ordinary entrepreneur who set his sights on making his fortune in Suriname, only to fall knee-deep into the world of drug crime.

Narco Saints Season 2 Netflix Renewal Status

Official Netflix Renewal Status: Pending (Last Updated: 21/09/2022)

At the time of writing Netflix has not made a decision on the future of Narco Saints. We expect this will take several weeks as Netflix monitors the performance of the series.

There are many factors that are involved in Netflix making the decision to renew a series. Some of the factors Netflix will consider are;

  • Total hours viewed (millions)
  • Time spent in the global top ten (days/weeks)
  • Cost of a second season

Currently, the series is performing extremely well and in its second week achieved a total of 62,650,000 million hours viewed, a 204% increase on its debut week. The series helped to dethrone the massively popular k-drama series Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

narco saints season 2 netflix renewal status and what we know so farpng

Given the current projection of the series, we’re hopeful of renewal. However, over the next several weeks we’ll continue to report on the performance of the series, and whether or not the viewing statistics will line up with its potential renewal.

Does Narco-Saints need a second season?

Whether or not Narco-Saints needs a second season is completely subjective. There will be many subscribers who watched the series and will be satisfied by the ending, and there will also be plenty of subscribers who would love to see much more.

As far as the story goes, everything was wrapped up neatly for a satisfying ending. After helping the NIS and the DEA take down the drug lord Yo-hwan, Kang was finally able to return home. After a six-month time skip, Kang was back to work as a mechanic in his shop, where agent Chang-Oh offered two karaoke bars as payment for his work, but Kang turns the payment down.

With his work with the NIS finished, Kang wishes to discuss with his family his involvement in the capture of drug lord Yo-hwan, however, Chang-oh makes Kang aware that the NIS will never publicly acknowledge his involvement in the operation.

For the story to continue, Kang would need to continue his involvement with the NIS, and officially be hired as an undercover agent to infiltrate more drug rings or other criminal organizations. Without being hired by the NIS, it’s extremely hard to see where the story could go.

Alternatively, the series could be approached like an anthology, with the one consistent factor in each season being Chang Ho, played by Squid Game and Money Heist: Korea actor Park Hae Soo. Each season could see a different operation in a different part of the globe, with a brand new cast of characters and story.

As a reult, Believe it or not, most people are filmmakers. They have smartphone with a camera and they make movies for their friends or social media. But to hone filmmaking skills, filmmakers need to develop their craft. Of course, you can do this on your own through trial and error. Or go to a film school. And how does a film school work?

What does a filmmaker do?

Filmmaking requires a plethora of unrelated skills. From the creativity of screenwriting to the event management of a shoot involving up to hundreds of people, to countless items of equipment and dealing with the fiscal issues of money and budgets.

How Does Film School Work?

First, let’s look at the different categories of film schools, and try to understand their business and teaching models.

The 4 types of film schools

We have divided film schools by their curriculum, or by the amount of time the course takes, be it a day or a year.

1.Recreational, hobby

These part-time classes are intended for hobbyists. The tutors are usually one-step above their students. They will certainly get you onto the bottom rung of the ladder. And they are generally quite inexpensive.

2.Academic

Generally offered by universities and colleges, these courses usually go under the broad title of ‘film appreciation’. These courses may be useful if you want a career as a film critic or festival programmer. Other than that it is very unlikely that you will touch a camera or editing software, let along learn about screen performance. In other words, three years of academic training could well leave you without any marketable skills.

3.Practical Training

There are a growing number of vocational colleges who teach some of the practicalities of the trade, be it camera, sound, editing, or makeup and art direction. These are useful courses where you can actually develop marketable skills.
Screenskills, the UK agency charged with training film crew, can offer bursaries and grants to help cover the costs of these courses.

4.Raindance

No other film school in the would couples film education and training with a major international film festival. Additionally, the Raindance approach is different. We do not NOT teach filmmaking. Raindance makes filmmakers.

The whole Raindance approach to film education does this by offering tutelage from working industry professionals who understand the specific skills in demand right now. And blend in this craft advice with the very best of traditional techniques and the very latest trends.

More to the point, our students make movies. In the 2021-22 academic year, our 38 students made 41 shorts, including this film festival cinema advert:

You are a filmmaker

If you have ever picked up your smartphone and shot a video, you are a filmmaker. Did you ever take the same scenario, and shot it a second time, perhaps from a different angle? This shows directing skills. Did you wonder why the sound was so bad? Or ask yourself how to make a really bright scene look less burned out?

You can figure all of this out on your own, of course. Sometimes you want to dive deeper and get the tricks and tips professionals use. And get them fast. Once you’ve planned your life so you can commit some serious time to your dream. In the same way a doctor or lawyer needs to commit before they get their degree and ticket to practise.

How does film school work? – 5 key ways

There are many competitive advantages you can gain from going to a good film school.

1.Filmmaking is a collaborative art

Orson Welles famously said: ‘A poet needs a pen, a painter needs a brush, but a filmmaker needs and army.’

Yes you can make a movie totally by yourself. But, if you need a cinematographer, a sound recordist, performers, and editors, you will need more people. And oh yes, you might need money for which you will need to find a producer. or develop your own producing skills.

An huge advantage of film school is you meet people with a common interest to you: filmmaking. It means that you have the opportunity of meeting like-minded people you can work with at film school.

2.Team building and networking

Successful filmmakers build teams. And the roles they recruit for are often filled by recruiting their film school colleagues.

Can I sound a bit, you know, crass for a minute?
And as a film student, you can market your skills and interests to your fellow students. As a result, you are more likely to get work from someone that already knows you than from a total stranger.

3. Hands on the gear

We’ve met film students from other schools who haven’t ever touched a camera! In 2021-22 our 38 HND students made 41 films. Not by sitting in a classroom looking at a slide presentation But by getting their hands on real equipment. and learning on-the-job under the expert mentorship of a working industry professional. There is no better way.

By the way. Some film school boast of a cabinet full of the latest this and the latest that equipment costing the earth. Film students faint at the thought of renting or buying these $20k cameras. And yes, it’s useful to know how these expensive cameras work. But, wouldn’t a film school like Raindance that also teaches how to make high quality movies on your smartphone make sense?

4. Competitive Edge

It’s a cut throat and highly competitive industry. But a good film school will help you understand if your ideas are any good. and a film school like Raindance actually has an internationally acclaimed film festival where you can judge your work against the very best independent film from around the world.

Accordingly, a good film school will also help you understand how the film business and creative industry is changing dramatically. Not only has digital equipment revolutionised the way films are made, it’s how films are sold. The advent of streamers has really impacted a filmmaker’s career. At Raindance we encourage our film students to drop the term ‘filmmaker’ and think of themselves as multi-format visual content creators. And to use their fellow students as sounding boards for their ideas. Its a place where you can test market your proof-of-concept shorts.

5.The power of a deadline

When was the last time you promised yourself you’s do something, and then just didn’t? Here’s the real benefit of film school. Your programme, whichever type it is, gives you assignments. and deadlines. How does film school work? You either complete your work on time and progress on your pathway. or you don’t and you flunk out.

The Next Step

If you want to write scrips and make movies, the easiest thing to do is decide how much time you can commit to your goal. If it’s 1 -5 hours per week, why not dip into some of the short writing, directing and producing courses at Raindance? They are on evenings and weekends.

If you really want to get down and can commit 15-35 hours a week over a year or two, maybe you would like to try one of the Higher Education courses at Raindance. And you can walk away with a professional qualification or Degree.

Once you have decided on your time commitment, have a look around at other London film schools. Find the best school for you. If you want to learn filmmaking, Raindance is NOT the right school for you. for at Raindance, we make filmmakers.

As a reult, Believe it or not,

After a too-long summer, the Vancouver Canucks are locked on a singular goal as they prepare for training camp.

“Not making the playoffs would be a disaster for us,” head coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters on Wednesday.

“But to make the playoffs, we have to do better and be more consistent over 82 games, not just 56 games or whatever the number was… I would call it a failure if we didn’t succeed in our goals this year.”

The Canucks will be on the ice for training camp in Whistler on Thursday before kicking off their pre-season campaign with a split-squad matchup against the Calgary Flames on Sunday.

The team knows securing a post-season berth this season — its first since the COVID bubble in Edmonton — will require a better start than the dismal 8-15-2 record that prompted a house cleaning last December.

The results saw the club fire head coach Travis Green, general manager Jim Benning and several other staff members.

Boudreau was hired to run the bench for the rest of the campaign and the team went 32-15-10 under his tutelage.

Last in the Pacific Division when Boudreau took over, Vancouver finished five points out of a playoff spot.

“Our expectation is to be playing in April,” said centre J.T. Miller. “We have to hit the ground running. Last year shows how important it is to have a good start.”

Miller, who signed a seven-year, US$56-million extension with Vancouver earlier this month, will be key to the team’s success.

The 29-year-old led the Canucks in scoring with a career-high 99 points (32 goals, 67 assists) and believes the group has what it takes to make a post-season run.

“A lot of guys here are sick of not making the playoffs,” Miller said. “Our goal is to compete for the Stanley Cup and win the Stanley Cup. There’s no reason that we can’t be there and competing for the Stanley Cup at the end of the season.”

Much of last year’s squad is returning this season, plus notable free agent acquisitions Curtis Lazar, formerly of the Boston Bruins, and ex-Toronto Maple Leaf Ilya Mikheyev.

“I’m excited about the guys that we added,” said captain Bo Horvat. “Re-signing (Miller) was a huge step into making us an elite group.”

Story continues below advertisement

Horvat, too, is looking for another big season.

The 27-year-old centre had 52 points last season, including a career-high 31 goals, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

He doesn’t expect his contract status to impact his play on the ice.

“I can put it aside completely,” Horvat said. “For me, I’m just focused on how I can make this team better. Eventually, it’s going to come to fruition.”

Like his coach and teammates, Horvat has high expectations for the 2022-23 season.

Reaching them will require the players to have a specific mindset, he said

“We have to see ourselves as a playoff team,” the captain said. “If we do anything less than that, we fail.”

Kim Kardashian, 41, appeared on Good Morning America on Sept. 20 to promote the second season of Hulu’s The Kardashians, but it’s not her interview that’s getting the attention. Kim’s $425 Balenciaga earrings, which appeared to be credit cards dangling from her ears, are rubbing a lot of people the wrong way and they did not hold back when they expressed their bewilderment on Twitter. “WTF is @KimKardashian wearing for her earrings? Credit cards?” one Twitter user asked. “Are they contactless pay enabled? Does she tap to pay with her head at the payment terminal? How does that work?” they joked. “Kim, whatever those earrings are, no matter what they cost, just take them off and throw them away!!” a second person suggested. A third hater claimed her “atrociously ugly earrings” were meant to distract people from noticing “her atrociously ugly hair”. Ouch!

However, not everyone was appalled by Kim’s earrings, which were paired with an outfit that consisted of a long-sleeved black turtle neck top and a pair of orange and black animal print Balenciaga boots that transformed into high-waisted pants. “Kim Kardashian you are so pretty,” one fan commented under a clip of her interview. “and hair style so beautiful”. Kim’s hair was worn in the half-tucked ponytail style she’s been rocking as of recent. Her black roots were showing, as she appeared to be letting her bleach blonde look, which she debuted in May, fade away.

Although many people let their disapproval of Kim’s outfit and earrings be known, she likely does not care. During her chat with GMA co-host Michael Strahan, Kim revealed how she deals with constantly being publicly scrutinized. “It has gotten easier because I think you just get to a level where you see that so much of it is noise and we have each other — we have us as a support system,” she noted.

“I couldn’t do it without my family just because when there’s, maybe, a little too much noise, everyone’s there to be like, ‘Okay, we know what’s real. We know what’s happening. This doesn’t matter. Let’s all just come back to what we know,’” the mom of four added.

And although she appreciates leaning on her family when she needs to, Kim revealed the new season of The Kardashians will show her being much more independent. “I just think that you see me making decisions for myself, obviously always thinking about my kids, but generally just doing things for myself,” she teased

TikTok can add jet fuel to entertainment marketers’ messages — but they have to learn how to speak the language of the platform to effectively harness the creativity of its creators.

That was one of the key takeaways from the Variety/TikTok Culture Catalysts Dinner, held in West Hollywood on Sept. 20.

Paramount Pictures’ approach with its TikTok campaign for blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” — 2022’s top-grossing movie at the box office so far — was to introduce the nearly 40-year-old flyboy franchise to Gen Z, said Danielle De Palma, EVP of global marketing for the studio. With TikTok, its biggest goal was to reach “younger audiences that didn’t have that same emotional, nostalgic connection to the film that so many of the older audiences did,” De Palma said.

“At every major marketing beat … it was really listening and learning to what that younger audience wanted from the film,” she said. “And of course the incredible aerial action and Tom Cruise was always at the top in what was most compelling, but what we really saw was that younger people wanted to see themselves on screen, and they wanted to see more of the new recruits.”

Khartoon Weiss, TikTok’s global head of agency and accounts, noted that videos with the #TopGunMode hashtag on TikTok have more than 13 billion views — exceeding the Earth’s population. “That is massive,” she said. “That is fandom at its finest. That is literally repeat usage behavior, watching, engagement.”

Film marketing is constantly evolving, especially in the digital realm, said De Palma. “But I do think we’ve seen a pretty seismic shift with the proliferation of TikTok over the last couple of years,” she noted. “I think it’s changing the way that we’re cutting creative. It’s changing the way that we’re working with creators… I feel like we’re constantly on the platform to see how people are expressing themselves.”

Jonathan Helfgot, Netflix’s VP of film marketing, said the what the streamer sees with TikTok, probably more than with any platform ever, “is the necessity to show up as a fan first — and as a marketer second.” With TikTok users, “it’s a little bit more leaning in, rather than just, ‘I’m going to lean back and let this advertising talk to me.’” I think they want a little bit more engagement and a little bit more personality.”

For Netflix’s “The Gray Man,” starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, the company enlisted the action film’s directors — the Russo brothers — for a behind-the-scenes series on TikTok, aimed at the #filmtok community on the app. The goal was “to harness the love that exists within the film community for the Russo brothers,” Helfgot explained.

Helfgot borrowed the phrase “sprinkle chaos” from his colleague Kelli King, who heads TikTok strategy for Netflix, to describe the streamer’s approach to the short-form video app. “You can’t just take this thing that you’re going to put somewhere else and put it on TikTok,” he said. “You’ve got to sprinkle a little chaos on it,” clarifying that “It’s chaos with a point of view.”

When partnering with TikTok creators, Helfgot added, “If you don’t understand the voice, and if you don’t understand the point of view, and you don’t understand what they make when they’re not necessarily getting paid by a brand, it’s not the right partnership.”

TikTok’s Weiss said part of her team’s job is to educate marketers on how best to engage the community. “We talk about it by way of assets, not ads,” she said. “So if you think about assets not ads — a sound, a color, a character, a separate ending — all of a sudden you have multiple ways to actually bring your stories to life.”

Undeniably, TikTok has cracked the content-algorithm code in becoming one of the biggest internet media platforms in the world. A year ago, the app announced it had more than 1 billion users worldwide — and today TikTok has somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.6 billion monthly active users, according to estimates by research firm data.ai.

The “beauty of TikTok is it’s not about the following that these creators have amassed, it’s about the creativity that they bring to the platform,” De Palma added. “And it is so joyful to be able to be entertained and excited about the creators that we’re finding on the platform.”

Earlier in the evening, a trio of entertainment-focused TikTok creators — Daphne Le (@daphnedtle), Emily Uribe (@emilyuuribe) and David Ma (@davidwma) — spoke about how to they approach content creation, fan engagement and brand deals on the platform, in a discussion moderated by Adrienne Lahens, TikTok’s global head of operations for creator marketing solutions.

Uribe talked about her recent partnership with Lionsgate for “Moonfall,” creating “some really sick content” for the film that encompassed “crazy talk show videos.” Lionsgate’s team “took that and made me the moon in ‘Moonfall,’” Uribe said: “That’s a brand that reached out and knew the creator and their audience and what they do.”

Ma recommended that when brands are dealing with TikTok creators, they should keep their marketing brief to one page that spells out the primary (and secondary) messaging as succinctly as possible, and that they should trust the creator to express that in their own voice instead of scripting it out. “When I see companies like Netflix or Disney+ and Marvel utilizing and leveraging their intellectual properties and their talent and bridging that world between where we see these stars on a big screen, and then seeing them in a TikToker’s video, it just connects that thread through,” he said.

Le said that TikTok, from a marketing perspective, is “a great way for streaming platforms to have audience recapture because a lot of people are sharing content about existing IP that they love.” She said she was originally expecting to go to medical school “and then I blew up on TikTok and was able to work on TikTok full-time.”

The Variety/TikTok Culture Catalysts Dinner was held at West Hollywood’s Soulmate restaurant. The event coincided with the inaugural Variety Entertainment Brand Marketing Impact Report, which profiles the most innovative entertainment marketing campaigns over the past year and the exec behind them.

TikTok can add jet fuel to entertainment

YouTube is working on a new program to let creators monetize their longform videos that use licensed music.

At its Made on YouTube event today, the company announced Creator Music, opening up a catalog of popular music for content creators to use in their videos without getting their monetization dinged. Creators have a few options: they can either license tracks directly and keep all of the revenue (besides the 45 percent cut YouTube takes) or share revenue with the license holders. If creators opt to share revenue with artists, their 55 percent share will be prorated based on the number of licensed tracks in their video, YouTube spokesperson Susan Cadrecha says. If they use one track, they’ll keep 27.5 percent, and if they use two, they’ll get 18.3 percent. Videos are subject to other deductions, like a performance rights fee, and the remaining portion goes to rights holders.

Using music has been a challenge for YouTube creators, who have generally had to use royalty-free music in order to keep their videos from being demonetized. Using even a small portion of a track from a major artist without permission could result in a video being blocked or a portion of it getting muted. The new program is in beta in the US and will expand to other countries next year.

Billboard reports YouTube has struck deals with more than 50 labels, publishers, and distributors, though so far, that doesn’t appear to include major labels. “Several hundred thousand” songs will be available for licensing through Creator Music, YouTube told the publication. Jason Derulo, for one, seems excited about it!

Creator Music is one of the biggest announcements coming out of YouTube’s event today and another play by YouTube to try to entice creators to the platform. Last week, the company said it was overhauling how people make money on Shorts, the platform’s TikTok clone, doing away with the creator fund and instead beginning an ad revenue sharing program to compete with TikTok. Shorts creators will get 45 percent of revenue, with YouTube keeping 55 percent — the inverse of the revenue share for longform videos.

Update September 21st 9:16AM ET: Updated to include additional details about revenue sharing.

Sara Shane, who starred opposite Gordon Scott in Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure and appeared alongside Clark Gable in The King and Four Queens, has died. She was 94.

Shane died July 31 on the Gold Coast of Australia, her family announced.

Shane also starred with Kathleen Hughes and Marla English in the melodrama Three Bad Sisters (1956) and had the female lead in Affair in Havana (1957), featuring John Cassavetes and Raymond Burr.

With the Jane character absent in the John Guillermin-directed Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure (1959), Shane stepped in to portray Angie Loring, an American model and pilot who meets up with the King of the Jungle in Africa. The film was Scott’s fourth as Tarzan.

And in The King and Four Queens (1956), helmed by Raoul Walsh, Shane played Oralie McDade, one of four young widows — Eleanor Parker, Jean Willes and Barbara Nichols are the others — who are living with their mother-in-law (Jo Van Fleet) and harboring stolen loot.

Elaine Sterling was born in St. Louis on May 18, 1928. She worked as a model in her hometown and for the Powers agency in New York before heading out to California, where she was signed by MGM and appeared in Easter Parade (1948), Julia Misbehaves (1948) and Esther Williams‘ Neptune’s Daughter (1949).

After MGM dropped her, her agent placed ads in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety to drum up publicity for her career. As Bob Thomas of the Associated Press wrote in 1954, one trade paper “featured a pin-up pose of her from the waist. An ad in the other trade showed her assets from the waist down. Put them both together and you got a lovely girl.”

She signed with Universal, adopted the stage name Sara Shane and made two films for director Douglas Sirk, Sign of the Pagan and Magnificent Obsession, both released in 1954. However, her stay at that studio didn’t last long, either.

She worked mostly in television in the 1960s, appearing on episodes of Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Outer Limits and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

Shane was married to real estate tycoon William Hollingsworth from 1949 until their 1957 divorce, and they had a son, Jamie.

Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also view them here.

The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same-day viewing).  Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers typically pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach. It’s also important to remember that ratings are designed to estimate how many people watch a show’s commercials — not the show itself. That’s what advertisers pay for.

What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better?

Pattinson selected six pieces from artists including Willem de Kooning, Richard Serra, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

Robert Pattinson has curated a collection fit for Bruce Wayne.

The “Batman” actor partnered with Sotheby’s on an exhibit for the Contemporary Curated program, which runs from September 23 through 29 at Sotheby’s New York. A live auction will conclude the exhibit on September 30.

Pattinson selected six pieces from artists including Willem de Kooning, Richard Serra, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. According to Artnet, estimated values for the works range from $100,000 to $2.5 million. Pattinson, who is deemed a “passionate art collector” by a Page Six source, previously auctioned one of his own sketches for charity in 2017.

“What I look for is when a piece has its own language,” Pattinson said in a press release of his curation strategy, especially applauding artist Julie Mehretu’s portrayals of “magnitude and abundance” in her “Untitled” ink drawing.

“It doesn’t necessarily feel like it just exists for its own sake and has a presence that hums with a bit of life,” Pattinson said. “It has the ability to communicate with you on a kind of primordial level. I sort of sway between things that feel very profound and cosmic and alien. Then, even on the other side, I like subversive, naughty, slightly dangerous stuff as well.”

The collection also included a Thomas Houseago sculpture in bronze and California redwood that could retrieve $80,0000 at auction, plus Genieve Figgis’ “Kissing by the Window,” with an estimated value of $30,000 to $40,000.

“Curating this group of paintings has been a really exciting process and an honor for me,” the “Twilight” alum continued. “Acting has made me realize that there is an interconnectedness between all art forms, and it made the process of curating the sale a fascinating and fun experience for me.”

Pattinson concluded with advice to collectors, saying, “Only acquire pieces that you’re going to love, no matter what. Just having something which you’re going to keep for the rest of your life is probably the best idea.”

Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated program has brought on celebrity guest curators since 2013, with Oprah Winfrey, DJ Steve Aoki, designer Margherita Missoni, and musician Skepta among past curators.

Oscar winner Brad Pitt recently launched his own exhibit at Sara Hildén Art Museum in Finland. The “Bullet Train” star unveiled nine sculptures as part of a larger exhibition by British artist Thomas Houseago and a ceramic series by Australian musician Nick Cave.

Famous actor Brad Pitt takes you on one of the most questionable, entertaining, and downright witty adventures in his latest movie, Bullet Train. Hitting US theaters on August 5, 2022, this standout motion picture, directed by David Leitch, plays with comedy and action, bringing back the raunchy plot lines we all know and love.

It goes without saying that movie buffs have much more than the surface-level storyline to look out for in a movie. Although I expect quite a few people to read this review and offer their opinions on Bullet Train’s overly comedic and predictable writing, I also hope my review shares a different perspective on this new big-screen feature.

Truth be told, my expectations for the film were not exactly high going in. I figured it would be another action movie that focuses too heavily on its fight scenes and gives little to no time for audiences to catch their breath.

Watching Bullet Train’s exciting and fast-paced trailer didn’t give me much to go off either. I was mainly thrilled seeing that Brad Pitt was the movie starring actor and that the trailer included a funky medley as its theme song.

All that being said, you might be surprised to know that the motion picture exceeded my expectations, and don’t worry, I’ll explain the how and why in this movie review. I promise not to give too much away in my explanation.

First and foremost, let’s talk about the plot. Bullet Train can no doubt be added to the list of spy/assassin action movies, as it follows the usual trope of having the main character, in this case, LadyBug (Brad Pitt), set off on a top-secret spy mission. Like most spy movies, the main character comes with his own set of bizarre and humorous quirks; for LadyBug (Brad Pitt), he is pretty much summed up as being unlucky, just not in the way you may think.

Bullet Train is set in Japan, and the majority of the film evidently takes place on the bullet train, one of the world’s fastest-moving vehicles. What makes this setting so entertaining is the train’s operation system that only stops a couple of times during a trip, giving passengers only one minute to get off. Director David Leitch used the train’s details to his advantage, making for a plot of unavoidable mishaps and close-quarters fight scenes.

What’s the most enticing about the storyline, however, is the way each character gets introduced. If you love dramatic character backstories, then trust me, you’ll enjoy this movie. From Mexican gangsters to dark and brutal mafia leaders, Bullet Train makes sure to cover all the bases. Even bringing in Joey King, the Netflix movie series Kissing Booth star, as a conniving trickster.

Since I want to give an honest review, I will note that if you are looking to watch an action movie that focuses more on the deep emotional components, then you may want to look elsewhere. Bullet Train is a lot of things, but it is not a serious or overly emotional film. The characters and script are witty and humorous, making it a light viewing rather than an overbearing one.

Next up in my review is the movie’s overall cinematography and set design. As a movie buff, I have a huge admiration for a film’s production. Bullet Train definitely surprised me on the cinematography front, showcasing exceptional lighting and sound design. Not to mention making each scene more attention-grabbing than the next.

LONDON, ENGLAND – JULY 20:  (Photo by Dave J Hogan/Getty Images)

Each of the train’s carts was unique and played on various out-of-the-box themes that left you feeling confused yet intrigued, eager to see the next cart. The lighting and sound design were strategically placed throughout the movie, making for some genuinely entertaining scenes. There were also several slow-motion parts in the movie that were exceptionally well done. Clearly, Jonathan Sela, the film’s cinematographer, paid close attention to details during production.

Bullet Train’s costume design was also a notable part of the film. Even after being destroyed in a fight scene, each outfit still suited the characters and their individual personalities.

This brings me to the third and final part of my movie review, the casting. When it comes to making a spunky action comedy, casting has to be able to fit the criteria that will have the audience laughing and rooting for their favorite characters. Bullet Train’s casting did just that.

Not only did Brad Pitt nail his quirky bad-luck character, but actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry also made quite the impression playing brothers Lemon and Tangerine. This duo, who spent half the movie arguing about the kids’ show Thomas The Tank Engine, quickly became my favorite characters. Joey King even surprised me, playing a somewhat serious character who was the definition of frustration. Bullet Train also had a few cameos, with appearances from Channing Tatum and Ryan Reynolds, making the movie even more humorous and enjoyable.

Overall, if you are looking for a movie that is entertaining, eye-catching, witty, comedic, and just over-the-top creative, then look no further. I highly recommend watching Bullet Train if you want something to lighten your mood or if you’re just a super big Brad Pitt fan.

Feel free to send in your thoughts about the movie down in the comments. I’d love to know if you enjoyed it, hated it or if there’s something I missed that’s worth noting.

Famous actor Brad Pitt takes you

A pervasive sense of “if you prick us, do we not bleed” humanitarian idealism runs straight through the heart of the comedy-drama A Gaza Weekend. But it’ll take more than some singular acts of altruism for Michael (Stephen Mangan) and Keren (Mouna Hawa) to make it out of Palestine in time and alive.

The plan seemed sound. In order to escape Israel, which has become Ground Zero for the sudden appearance of a deadly virus outbreak, Michael, a British journalist, and his fiancé, Keren, an Israeli national, would meet up with another British journalist, Jonathan (Yousef Shweihat) and together, the three would be surreptitiously smuggled out of Israel and into Palestine, then onward to safety.

But as is oftentimes the case with scenarios such as this, things don’t go exactly according to plan. Jonathan abandons Michael and Keren at the first sign of trouble, leaving the two to fend for themselves with the Palestinian connections, led by Waleed (Adam Bakri) and his goofy buddy, Emad (Loai Noufi). Waleed offers up a room in his apartment to the two fugitives, much to the chagrin of his wife, Nuhad (Maria Zreik), until he can procure a new passport for the Israeli Keren.

But word has gotten out that the Israeli-Palestinian border has been breached, and two Israelis, potentially infected with the deadly virus, might have snuck into Gaza.

“…the three would be surreptitiously smuggled out of Israel and into Palestine, then onward to safety.”

A Gaza Weekend is a little confused about whether it wants to be a madcap comedy with serious underlining or a more dramatic film that is peppered with humor. The performances are, on the whole, quite good, although there are a few instances of outsized hamminess that lend credence to the madcap comedy theory. Sometimes Hawa goes a little too overboard into shrieking harpy territory, but that can be justified within the context of her character, an Israeli hiding out in the middle of Gaza. The one character that is a basket case is Saleh (Adeeb Safadi), who becomes almost maniacally obsessed with finding the fugitives and capturing them himself.

But there is a general good-naturedness about the film and the performances that bridges the chasm between the tonal confusion and makes the film very easy to digest. It’s definitely working within a sensitive and timely subject matter of the ongoing war between these two Middle Eastern nations and their respective countrymen and women. But A Gaza Weekend somehow manages to work what is, in reality, a very frightening scenario, into a relatively light and breezy affair, even with the deadly virus subplot thrown in.

This narrative sleight-of-hand can be attributed to director Basil Khalil’s energetic pacing and the lively performances he elicits from his actors. While A Gaza Weekend is, I would argue, certainly leaning pro-Palestinian in its politics; it also doesn’t demonize the other side, the Israelis. The main characters from both sides are treated empathetically and without a heavy measure of scorn, which is refreshing. Khalil and Daniel Chan’s script has a few good one-liners, mostly between the escaping couple, that make clear the semi-comedic intentions of the script. When Waleed and Emad are shouting, Keren, thinks she hears them say Hamas. Michael tries to console his terrified fiancé and says, “I thought I heard hummus.” Earlier, when Michael notices a coffin in the storage area of their room, he remarks to Keren that it reminds him of her mother. Now that’s a zinger!

A Gaza Weekend manages the tricky feat of taking a historically hostile and volatile situation and creating a bouncy little story from it without losing any of the gravity that we all know is part of the every day for the people living it.

A Gaza Weekend screened 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.

A pervasive sense of “if you prick

Vladimir Putin today issued a chilling new threat to use nuclear weapons against the West, telling world leaders to back off Ukraine while warning: ‘I’m not bluffing’.

The desperate despot also ordered the mobilisation of 300,000 military reserves – a first in Russia since the Second World War – and gave the go-ahead for referendums to be held in occupied areas of Ukraine that would make them a part of Russia, in the Kremlin’s eyes at least.

He vowed to use ‘all means’ to defend the regions, saying: ‘If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will use all available means to protect Russia and our people – this is not a bluff… I shall stress – by all means available to us. Those trying to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the tables can turn on them.’

Putin’s gambit comes after Ukraine routed a large part of the Russian army last week, leaving him backed into a corner of his own making and facing the possible collapse of his so-called ‘special military operation’.

But rather than back down, the Russian leader has instead chosen to double down and hold the free world to ransom – putting Russia and its huge nuclear arsenal on direct collision course with Ukraine and its allies, who have already vowed not to accept the results of ‘sham’ referendums or to stop liberating occupied territory.

Speaking ahead of Putin’s speech last night, President Zelensky dismissed ‘noise’ from Russia and said it will not alter Ukraine’s resolve. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba likewise vowed: ‘The Russians can do whatever they want. It will not change anything. Ukraine has every right to liberate its territories and will keep liberating them whatever Russia has to say.’

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodrymyr Zelensky, spoke out this morning after Putin’s announcement – calling it ‘predictable’ and saying it show the war is not going to plan. President Joe Biden is expected to give a speech to the UN later today when he will rally Ukraine’s allies to stay the course.

Vladimir Putin has today threatened to nuke the West over Ukraine, as he announced plans to annex occupied parts of its territory to the Russian mainland

Screaming former Putin advisor warns despot is ready to NUKE Britain

A former Russian MP and Putin advisor declared that British cities will be targeted by Putin’s nukes in a bare-faced tirade this morning on the Today programme.

Sergei Markov had barely exchanged pleasantries with BBC Radio 4 host Justin Webb when he launched into a series of threats about nuclear war.

‘It’s not a good morning for everybody. In Russia there’s partial mobilisation and for your British listeners Vladimir Putin told you that he would be ready to use nuclear weapons against Western countries… including against Great Britain.

‘Your cities will be targeted.’

Markov, who was elected to Russia’s State Duma in 2007 representing Putin’s United Russia party, is now a professor of international relations at a Moscow university and has a history of spouting Putin’s rhetoric in Western media.

‘If Great Britain will continue to be aggressor against Russia… if Prime Minister of Great Britain Liz Truss still has a plan to destroy Russia, people in London should understand the threat [of nuclear weapons],’ he said.

Markov’s unhinged comments today came moments after the Russian president announced partial mobilisation to reinforce his faltering war in Ukraine and delivered his most pronounced nuclear threat yet towards the West.

Markov from the get-go set about decrying Western involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and accused the West of using Ukrainian soldiers as ‘slaves’ to deplete the Russian army.

‘It was absolutely clear that Russia has no war against Ukraine…there’s no reason to use tactical nuclear weapons against Ukrainians,’ he said.

‘But Ukraine is occupied by Western countries… it’s Western countries fighting against Russian army, using Ukrainian soldiers as their slaves. This was the main idea of Vladimir Putin.’

Bemused host Justin Webb allowed Markov to reach a conclusion before calmly asking whether the ex-Putin aide and the Russian people believed there could be a winner in a nuclear war.

‘Everybody in the world is now thinking about nuclear war… which could be the result of crazy behaviour of US president Joe Biden and prime ministers of Great Britain Boris Johnson and [Liz] Truss,’ Markov retorted.

Podolyak said mobilisation will prove extremely unpopular within Russia, and accused Putin of trying to shift the blame for starting an ‘unprovoked war’ and crashing the economy on to the West.

It is thought the mobilisation will press around 300,000 people into the Russian army – around twice the size of the force that Putin invaded with.

But it is unclear when exactly these men will become available, and the move will do nothing to solve Russia’s chronic lack of equipment, supplies and other logistical issues that have spelled disaster for its invasion so-far.

Putin had resisted declaring any kind of mobilistion until now, apparently fearing backlash from Russians who may have been supporting his ‘special military operation’ only because they had nothing to lose.

But the Russian leader dramatically changed tack under pressure from allies, propagandists and hardliners after another humiliating military defeat near Kharkiv last week which had sparked calls for him to resign.

He was at pains to stress that the mobilisation is only partial, and will not affect ordinary citizens, conscripts or students. Those called up to service – starting today – will be those with experience of service and combat, he insisted.

However, the move spooked ordinary Russians – with a spike in searches for plane tickets shortly after the announcement as the cost of one-way flights soared to tens of thousands of dollars each.

Meanwhile a mixture of fear, anger, and dissent was spreading across Russian social media networks.

Users even coined a new word – ‘Mogilisation’ from the Russian word ‘mogila’ or ‘grave’ – to describe the expected fate of those taken away to fight.

‘I am super worried for my young male friends and my boyfriend,’ said one woman, 28, from a city thousands of miles east of the Kremlin where the Russian president issued his fateful TV call-up.

Lilianna D demanded: ‘I recommend mobilising the entire Duma [parliament] and their families first of all. And let people see how loyal they are.’

Andrey Shipilov, a Cyprus-based Russian journalist, posted: ‘A friend from Russia has just messaged…an entire institute’s [graduates], all reserve officers, have already been called up this morning’.

Speaking after Putin, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu gave a rare update on Russian casualty figures, preposterously claiming that only 6,000 Kremlin troops have been killed in the war so far.

Ukrainian losses, he said, were ten times that: 61,000 dead in addition to 49,000 wounded.

In a speech delayed for 13 hours overnight – triggering wishful rumours of a coup inside the Kremlin – Putin delivered his twisted interpretation of the war to date.

He attempted to rewrite history to paint the West and NATO as the aggressor – saying they had pushed Ukraine into a war with Russia, despite ordering an invasion of the country himself just seven months ago.

Ukraine began the war back in 2014, he said – referring to the date of Russia’s last invasion – when the ‘Nazi’ regime in Kyiv had turned the military on its own civilians in an attempted genocide following what he called a ‘coup’ to oust the country’s last pro-Kremlin leader.

In Putin’s retelling, the West ‘refused a peaceful solution’ and instead began rearming Ukraine for an attack on the Donbas – leaving him with no choice but to launch a pre-emptive war to protect people.

He falsely claimed that peace negotiations with Ukraine were deliberately undermined by Kyiv’s bloody-minded Western allies, who then began training and equipping its armed forces with the goal of destroying Russia.

Attacks on schools and hospitals are not the work of the Russian army, as reams of evidence suggests, but are in fact the work of Ukrainian Nazis and nationalists, he said.

Facing these threats, Putin said he has no choice but to accept the requests of his puppet leaders in occupied Ukraine to hold referendums on joining Russia, and no choice but to call up his military reserves.

He added: ‘In its aggressive anti-Russian policies, the West has crossed all lines… There are plans in Washington and Brussels to move the military action on to Russian territory.

‘Doctors called after Putin suffered coughing fit amid chaotic scenes behind TV address’

Doctors were called to Putin‘s aid amid behind the scenes chaos as he prepared to issue his doomsday nuclear threats, Kremlin rumours have claimed.

The Russian tyrant allegedly suffered coughing fits and chest pains in the lead-up to his TV address, which was delayed for 13 hours.

The General SVR Telegram channel, believed to be run by a former Kremlin insider which had predicted the mobilisation move, said Putin’s speech had to be re-recorded multiple times because of his ill health.

They also claimed that three key figures threatened to resign over the president’s dramatic escalation, including the respected Elvira Nabiullina, the head of the Russian central bank who has kept the economy afloat amid Western sanctions.

The Telegram channel said: ‘Several attempts to start recording an appeal were frustrated due to coughing.

‘After the fourth unsuccessful attempt to record an appeal, doctors were called to the president, to whom Putin also complained of chest pains.’

‘They are not just talking about Russia being destroyed on the battlefield, they are talking about political, cultural, and all other types of sovereignty with complete pillage. Now they’re talking about nuclear blackmail.

‘Those who make such statements will be reminded that our country also has various weapons of destruction and with regard to certain components they are even more modern than the NATO ones.

‘If there is any threat to the territorial integrity of our country and to protect our people we will certainly use all means available to us. I’m not bluffing.

‘Russia citizens can be certain that the territorial integrity of our motherland, our independence and security will be assured. I shall stress – by all means available to us

‘And those trying to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the tables can turn on them

‘In our historic tradition our people had it in their destiny to stop those how are trying to subjugate our motherland and it will happen now.’

The allegations are an almost exact inversion of everything Russia has been accused of doing, and is a common trope of Kremlin propaganda.

Referendums will begin this week into next week, according to Russia occupation authorities, with the results expected to be announced shortly after.

Police and officials will go door-to-door to ensure people cast their votes, they said, leaving few doubts about which way they will be voting.

Ballot boxes will also be set up inside Russia itself, ostensibly to allow those who have already fled those regions a chance to cast a vote – but in all likelihood will be stuffed with fake ballots.

Early ‘polling’ released by Russian state media last night showed – unsurprisingly – that more than 80 per cent of people in the four regions want to join Russia.

In Donetsk and Luhansk – the focus of Putin’s war effort – the reported figure was over 90 per cent.

West vows never to recognise results of ‘sham’ referendums

Western leaders last night vowed never to respect the results of ‘sham’ referendums annexing parts of Ukraine to Russia, speaking hours before Putin issued his new nuclear threat.

White House spokesman Jake Sullivan described the votes as a violation of Ukrainian sovereignty which carry ‘no legitimacy’.

Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the UN where heads of state are gathered for a general assembly, said that if Moscow’s plan ‘wasn’t so tragic it would be funny.’

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Putin will only give up his ‘imperial ambitions’ that risk destroying Ukraine and Russia if he recognises he cannot win the war.

‘This is why we will not accept any peace dictated by Russia and this is why Ukraine must be able to fend off Russia’s attack,’ Scholz said.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told the assembly the U.N.’s credibility was in danger because of the invasion by Russia, a permanent member of the Security Council, and reforms of the council were needed.

‘Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a conduct that tramples the philosophy and principles of the U.N. charter … It should never be tolerated,’ Kishida said.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba vowed that: ‘The Russians can do whatever they want. It will not change anything.

‘Ukraine has every right to liberate its territories and will keep liberating them whatever Russia has to say.’

‘The situation on at the front clearly indicates the initiative is with Ukraine,’ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address released early on Wednesday.

Ukraine’s position did not change because of ‘some noise’ from Russia, Zelensky added in a reference to the referendums.

Russia is now almost seven months into what was intended to be a days-long war in Ukraine, and the situation for its troops is becoming increasingly desperate.

Having been forced to retreat from Kyiv in the early months of fighting after its advance stalled, the Kremlin’s war machine instead focused its efforts on ‘liberating’ the eastern Donbas region.

Months of grinding warfare saw Russia capture the whole of the Luhansk region, but only around half of neighbouring Donetsk – which make up the Donbas.

As Russia’s advances slowed and then stopped, Ukraine went on the counter-attack – launching an offensive on the southern city of Kherson.

Russia moved forces from other areas of the country to help defend the city, at which point Ukraine launched a second counter-attack east out of Kharkiv – in the north.

That move caught the Kremlin’s commanders completely off guard, triggering a rout that handed 3,000 square miles of territory that Russia had spent months capturing back to Ukraine in just a few days.

And Kyiv has continued to press the attack, regaining a foothold in the Luhansk region and threatening to push further across the province.

Faced with war on two fronts and not enough men to hold the territory he has already captured, Putin was left with few options but to begin conscripting men.

However, experts and analysts say it will do little to turn the tide of the war in his favour.

It will take at least weeks, possibly months, to gather, equip, train and transport hundreds of thousands more men to the frontlines – time that Russia does not have.

By the time reinforcements arrive winter will be setting in when combat operations will be considerably harder, compounding the issues that Russia’s military already faces.

And mobilising more men will do nothing to solve the chronic lack of equipment and supplies among Russia’s ranks, or fix the logistical issues which have hampered its attacks.

Some drew comparisons with the disastrous Winter War that the Soviet Union fought against Finland, which ended with hundreds of thousands of Red Army troops dead or wounded to around 25,000 Finnish.

Western leaders had pre-empted Putin’s remarks at the UN last night, saying they would not recognise the results of any ‘sham’ referendums in Ukraine.

‘The Russians can do whatever they want. It will not change anything,’ Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Tuesday as world leaders were arriving for the United Nations General Assembly meeting.

He later doubled down on the issue, tweeting: ‘Sham ‘referendums’ will not change anything. Neither will any hybrid ‘mobilization.’

‘Russia has been and remains an aggressor illegally occupying parts of Ukrainian land. Ukraine has every right to liberate its territories and will keep liberating them whatever Russia has to say.’

French President Emmanuel Macron said that if the referendum plan ‘wasn’t so tragic it would be funny.’

He described Russia’s invasion as ‘a return to a new age of imperialism and colonies’ and warned that inaction risked ‘tearing down the global order without which peace is not possible.’

‘It’s not a matter of choosing one side between East and West, or North or South. It’s a matter of responsibility’ to the UN Charter, he said.

Russian markets dive and searches for plane tickets spike as Putin escalates Ukraine war

The rouble tumbled against the dollar on Wednesday and Russian stock markets dived around 10 per cent after Putin ordered Russia’s first military mobilisation since World War Two.

Google data also showed a spike in searches for flights out of the country amid claims the cost of one-way tickets had soared, suggesting spooked citizens were looking for ways to flee the draft.

Putin said he had signed a decree on partial mobilisation, significantly escalating what Russia calls its ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine, and warned that Moscow would respond with the might of all its vast arsenal if the West continued with what he called its ‘nuclear blackmail’.

Shortly after 7am in London, the rouble had slumped 2.6 per cent against the dollar, having earlier dipped to its weakest point since July 7.

Russian stock indexes were plunging, with energy giants Rosneft and Gazprom at one point losing around 12 per cent.

The benchmark rouble-based MOEX index hit its lowest point since Feb. 24, the day Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine.

The index was down 5.5% at 2,094.5 points, earlier reaching a low of 2,002.73 points. The dollar-denominated RTS index was down 8% to 1,061.9 points, its lowest point since April 27.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the world was ‘facing a new fragmentation’ after years of hope following the end of the Cold War and his own nation’s reunification.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the world was ‘facing a new fragmentation’ after years of hope following the end of the Cold War and his own nation’s reunification.

Scholz said that President Vladimir Putin, who invaded Ukraine in February, will ‘only give up his war and his imperialist ambitions if he realizes he cannot win.’

‘We stand firmly at the side of those under attack — for the protection of the lives and the freedom of the Ukrainians, and for the protection of our international order,’ he said.

And Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told the assembly the U.N.’s credibility was in danger because of the invasion by Russia, a permanent member of the Security Council.

‘Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a conduct that tramples the philosophy and principles of the U.N. charter … It should never be tolerated,’ Kishida said.

President Joe Biden will make an address to the UN today in which he will argue that Russia’s ‘naked aggression’ in Ukraine is an affront to the heart of what the international body stands for.

White House officials said the focus of his time at the general assembly will be rallying Ukraine allies to stay the course against Russia, and remain united in the face of Putin’s threats.

‘He’ll offer a firm rebuke of Russia’s unjust war in Ukraine and make a call to the world to continue to stand against the naked aggression that we’ve seen these past several months,’ White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in previewing the president’s address.

‘He will underscore the importance of strengthening the United Nations and reaffirm core tenets of its charter at a time when a permanent member of the Security Council has struck at the very heart of the charter by challenging the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty.’

In his nightly address Zelenskyy said there were lots of questions surrounding the announcements but stressed that they would not change Ukraine’s commitment to retake areas occupied by Russian forces.

‘The situation on the front line clearly indicates that the initiative belongs to Ukraine,’ he said. ‘Our positions do not change because of the noise or any announcements somewhere. And we enjoy the full support of our partners in this.

‘I thank all friends and partners of Ukraine for today’s mass principled firm condemnation of Russia’s attempts to stage new sham referenda,’ Zelensky said.

In another signal that Russia is digging in for a protracted and ramped-up conflict, the Kremlin-controlled lower of house of parliament voted Tuesday to toughen laws against desertion, surrender and looting by Russian troops.

Lawmakers also voted to introduce possible 10-year prison terms for soldiers refusing to fight.

If approved, as expected, by the upper house and then signed by Putin, the legislation would strengthen commanders’ hands against failing morale reported among soldiers.

In the Russian-occupied city of Enerhodar, shelling continued around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Ukrainian energy operator Energoatom said Russian shelling again damaged infrastructure at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and briefly forced workers to start two diesel generators for emergency power to reactor cooling pumps.

Such pumps are essential for avoiding a meltdown at a nuclear facility even though all six of the plant’s reactors have been shut down. Energoatom said the generators were later switched off as main power weas restored.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been a focus for concern for months because of fears that shelling could lead to a radiation leak. Russia and Ukraine blame each other for the shelling.

IN FULL: Putin’s address to the nation

Russian President Putin gave his first address to the Russian nation since the start of his war in Ukraine this morning – mobilising his military reserves and issuing a fresh nuclear threat to the West.

The despot gave his own twisted version of the war to date, painting NATO as the aggressors, saying the Ukrainians are torturing their own civilians, and that Western leaders are plotting the destruction of Russia itself.

Here is his speech in full:

Citizens of Donetsk and Luhansk, the People’s republics of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, and other people free from the Nazi regime.

We will be talking about steps of protecting our sovereignty, the will and desire of our citizens to determine their own future, and about the aggressive bloc of Western countries that are trying to keep their supremacy at all costs – that are trying to block and suppress any independent centers of development in order to force their will in brutal ways on others.

The aim of the West is to weaken, and destroy. They are openly saying that in ’91 they managed to split the Soviet Union and now is the time for Russia itself.

Russia will be split into many regions and areas which are fighting each-other to the death.

They had these plans for a long time. They supported bands of international terrorists in the Caucasus. They are encouraging NATO to come to our borders. There is total Russophobia and many years of total hate for Russia.

First and foremost this is in Urkaine. They made the Ukrainian people cannon fodder and pushed Ukraine into a war with our country

They started the war already in 2014, using the army against the civilian population, and organising genocide, a blockade and terror against people who refused to acknowledge Ukrainian power as a result of a military coup.

As usual, they refused a peaceful solution of the Donbas issue and started claiming the right to use nuclear weapons. It became clear as before, a second large offensive in Donbas is inevitable and the decision of a pre-emptive military operation was the only decision and absolutely necessary.

The main aim of freeing the whole of the Donbas remains without change.

The Luhansk People’s Republic is fully cleared of the Nazis. The fight in the Donetsk People’s Republic continues.

The occupation regime has made deep line of defence and therefore the part of our army and Donbas military units are using technology and people, and are freeing the Donetsk People’s Republic step but step, village by village, and helping people turned into hostages by the criminal regime

As you know, the professional army is taking part in the special military operation, however volunteer units are fighting alongside them.

They have different nationalities, professions and ages. They are true patriots, protecting Russia and Donbas through the call of their hearts.

The Ministry of Defence was instructed by me to determine as soon as possible the legal status of these areas and also the status of the units of the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics.

They have to be the same as the professional military of the Russian army, including social guarantees, medical and financial supplies.

We need to pay special attention to the procurement of the units of the Donbas using technology and munitions.

Our army, based on the decisions of the Ministry of Defence and the general command, have freed from the neo-Nazis the considerable territories of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

As a result, there is a long line of military contact – over 1,000km.

At the Istanbul [peace negotiations with Ukraine] there was a very positive reaction to our proposals concerning ensuring the security of Russia

But it was obvious the West was not happy with a peaceful decision, so after reaching certain compromises Ukraine was effectively given the direct order to undermine the negotiations.

The Kyiv regime started using new bands of foreign mercenaries and nationalists, and the army was trained by NATO standards and actually commanded by western commanders.

The repression regime intensified across the whole of Ukraine by its military who, in 2014,used  the politics of terror and intimidation. It becomes more and more barbaric and terrible.

The territories freed from the neo-Nazis and freed from the war, they are the Novorossiya lands we are talking about – Kherson, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporzhizhia regions – you have seen the barbarities of the neo-Nazis in the regions captured by them.

The Banderas [supporters of a far-right Ukrainian leader] and the Nazi mercenaries are torturing the peaceful citizens.

In the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson over 7.5million people lived before the start of the operation.

Many were forced to become refugees, those who remained are constantly bombarded by rockets and artillery on the part of the neo-Nazis who attack hospitals, schools and create acts of terror against peaceful citizens

We have a moral right to give people that are dear to us, who are being tortured, we need to give them a chance to determine their own fate.

The parliament of the LPR, and the DPR, and the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions have decided to hold referendums on joining Russia and have asked Russia to support such a step.

I stress that we will do all that we can to create safe conditions to hold the referendums, so people can express their will and decision about the future. They will be supported by us.

Dear friends, today our army is directing at the frontline exceeding 1000km, and they are facing not just the neo-Nazis but the collective military machine of the whole of the West.

In this situation, I deem it is necessary to make the following decision which is appropriate to the threat we are facing.

In defence of our motherland, to ensure its safety, territorial integrity, security of our people and in the free territories I deem it necessary to support the decision of the Ministry of Defence and the general command for a partial mobilisation held in the Russian Federation.

I stress that it is partial mobilisation. Only those who are currently in reserve will be conscripted, and also those who served in the army and have certain military skills. They will be given additional military training, taking into account the special military operation.

The decree has been signed, officially the chambers of the federal assembly and Duma will be informed.

The mobilisation will start today on 21st September, I task the heads of regions to provide all necessary assistance to military commissioners. I stress that Russian citizens called up as part of mobilisation will be given all the guarantees, all the benefits of those serving under contract

The decree of partial mobilisation includes additional measures to safeguard the state procurement for the defence concerning military technology, and additional capacities for its production.

All the financial matters for supplying defence factories shall be resolved without delay.

In its aggressive anti-Russian policies, the West has crossed all lines.

We constantly hear threats against our people and some irresponsible politicians in the West are talking about not just providing Ukraine with long-range military systems that will be able to hit Russia – that is already happening, we’re talking about the border regions, in Belgorod and systems using strategic drones, planes, doing reconnaissance across the south.

There are plans in Washington and Brussels to move the military action on to Russian territory.

There are not just talking about Russia being destroyed on the battlefield, they are talking about political, cultural, and all other types of sovereignty with complete pillage. Now they’re talking about nuclear blackmail.

The Zaporzhzhia nuclear power plant was shelled. Also the high representative of leading NATO states were saying that it might be permissible to use nuclear weapons against Russia.

Those who make such statements will be reminded that our country also has various weapons of destruction and with regard to certain components they are even more modern than the NATO ones.

If there is any threat to the territorial integrity of our country and to protect our people we will certainly use all means available to us. I’m not bluffing.

Russia citizens can be certain that the territorial integrity of our motherland, our independence and security will be assured. I shall stress – by all means available to us

And those trying to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the tables can turn on them

In our historic tradition our people had it in their destiny to stop those how are trying to subjugate our motherland and it will happen now.

I believe in your support.
