If you’re playing online battles in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, be careful because it appears as though hackers are up to no good with their Ogerpon, and are using the new Legendary Pokemon to soft-lock their opponent’s game. Once soft-locked, the victim has no choice but to close their game down, resulting in a win for the hacker.

The situation was brought to light by Anubis on Twitter on September 19, who posted a video of a hacker in action, captioned, “Beware! Malicious players can softlock your online battles by Terastallizing an Ogerpon into an impossible Tera Type.”

To cause the softlock, the offender uses hacking tools to add an impossible Tera Type to an Ogerpon. Then, on a homebrewed Nintendo Switch, they enter an online battle with the illegitimate Pokemon. Ogerpon’s Tera Type can only be Grass, Water, Fire, or Rock as it is tied to which mask it wears. So by generating an Ogerpon with a Tera Type it cannot have, the game freezes for the unsuspecting victim, leaving them no choice but to shut their game down completely and forfeit the match, resulting in a loss for them and a win for the hacker.

While softlocking may not seem that big of a deal when compared to hardlocking, which bricks your console, it does run the possibility of corrupting your save file. So, if you’re playing online battles in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, be careful and try and exit out before your game softlocks if you spot anyone using an Ogerpon, just to be on the safe side.

The sneak preview include new works from Ukraine, Netherlands, Belgium and Mexico. According to Festival Director Tiina Lokk, all four films deal with highly topical and relevant issues that affect and connect us all here and now. “A sharp social perspective will also characterise the rest of the main competition programme, which will provide a cross-section of today’s major issues. I believe we have put together a very strong and interesting programme of auteur films of which we can be proud.” she said.

THE FIRST REVEALS OF OFFICIAL COMPETITON 2023

Oxygen Station | World premiere

Ivan Tymchenko’s second feature is a multi-layered poetic drama based on the life of Mustafa Jemilev, Soviet dissident, human rights activist and leader of Crimean Tatar nation. The events take place in the summer of 1980, when Jemilev serves a four-year exile in the settlement Zyryanka, north-eastern Siberia. He works at the oxygen station – a place symbolizing the total lack of oxygen in the USSR. According to Tymchenko, the film is an inspiring story for contemporary audiences since it reminds us of the inhumane regime that the Russian-Soviet terrorist organization was and still is.

Amal | International premiere

Jawad Rhalib’s social drama Amal tells a story of a teacher in a Brussels school who encourages her pupils to cultivate a love of reading and freedom of expression, even if it means putting herself in danger. Her daring teaching practices will change her pupils. The Belgian-Moroccon filmmaker’s fiction features and documentaries have tackled themes of human rights and social realism, and have been screened at numerous international film festivals. In 2020, his documentary Fadma: Even Ants Have Wings won Amnesty International Human Rights Award at Durban Film Festival in South Africa.

The Man from Rome | International premiere

The film unfolds a story of skeptical priest Filippo who is sent to the Dutch border community to investigate a supposed miracle. As he gets closer to a resolution of the case, he also gets entangled in a series of apparently miraculous events, bringing down his certainties about his calling as a priest and as human being. Jaap van Heusden has been writing and directing films that resonate the great themes of our time (immigration, mental health and the implosion of the great institutions) by telling deeply personal stories. His films have competed at Tribeca, Cannes, AFI Fest, Rome, IDFA, SXSW, Melbourne, Tehran, Rotterdam.

Bad Actor | World premiere

Jorge Cuchi’s nuanced, incisive and thrilling drama is set in the post #MeToo era that is all about consent, and a search for truth and justice in a case of sexual assault.  On a film shoot, actress Sandra Navarro accuses actor Daniel Zavala of abusing her during a sex scene. Daniel proclaims his innocence, Sandra decides to press charges, while the production tries to prevent the incident from turning into a scandal. Cuchí’s debute 50 or Two Whales Meet on the Beach premiered at the 35th Venice Film Critic’s Week and scooped several awards thereafter. This includes Just Film Youth Jury Best Film Award at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2020.

Nia DaCosta is opening up about her time directing upcoming superhero film The Marvels.

The writer-director spoke with Vanity Fair ahead of the Nov. 10 release date of the Captain Marvel sequel, starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani. In the conversation, she revealed she turned to one of her fellow Marvel directors in particular during production when she was overwhelmed and stressed.

While she loved filming The Marvels, she admitted there were days when she texted Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton to vent about how she was feeling.

“Sometimes you’d be in a scene, and you’d be like, ‘What the hell does any of this shit mean?’” she told the publication. “Or an actor’s looking at some crazy thing happening in space, and they’re [actually] looking at a blue X. There were obviously hard days and days where you’re like, ‘This just isn’t working.’”

Marvel encouraged DaCosta to speak to some of her predecessors before going into production on the sequel to discuss some of her fears. So, she reached out to Chloé Zhao (Eternals), Taika Waititi (Thor) and James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and asked them, “Are they going to kill me and destroy my soul? Is Kevin Feige a bad man?” she joked. “And they were like, ‘No, he’s just a good guy who was a nerd.’”

DaCosta also spoke to Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler ahead of entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He advised her to just be herself — advice she wasn’t sure would be enough, but she trusted him anyway, returning to his suggestion often.

“You can’t do anything but be yourself, so bring that to the table,” she said. “They can choose to take some and leave some, but that’s what your job is.”

With The Marvels, DaCosta becomes the franchise’s youngest director and also the first Black woman to helm one of its movies. She explained that when she goes into a room to discuss her idea for a film, she only looks at what she wants to do, instead of what the company may want her to do, making her stand out.

Prior to stepping into the MCU, DaCosta co-wrote and directed Jordan Peele’s Candyman, which marked her first major film and made her the first Black woman to have a movie open at No. 1 at the box office.

As far as mentors go for the writer-director, Peele was as good as it gets.

“One of the most important things I learned from him is how to be fearless and how to navigate studio stuff,” she told the publication. “He’s not just critically successful, he’s incredibly commercially successful as well, and that has its own pressure, obviously. He was really good at holding both those things at once.”

While Peele had her back on the set of Candyman, DaCosta revealed that there were times when crew members would say “super inappropriate” things to her that were specific to her gender, race and age.

Thankfully, she had a different experience on The Marvels, due to the fact that she was able to hire the people she wanted on her film.

“I realized it wasn’t ever gonna be about how much power I amassed or how many great movies I made, or if I won awards, it was always just going to be the people that I surrounded myself with,” DaCosta explained. “The thing that I’ve been most surprised by lately is how much respect I’m getting from these middle-aged white dudes that I work with.”

Chris Evans might have had trouble “wrapping his head” around Bong Joon-ho’s “Snowpiercer” script, but at least the Marvel star could wrap his hands around everything on set. The “Captain America” actor revealed to GQ in a new interview (which you can watch in full in the below video) that starring in Bong’s 2013 post-apocalyptic sci-fi film proved to be a starkly different and more tangible experience than leading the Marvel ensemble movies.

Evans played a dissenting lower-class citizen in “Snowpiercer,” where the world’s remaining population live on an ever-moving train. “We had those cars on Gimbals, these little like … they just do like a subtle movement. So a lot of boat legs at the end of the day,” Evans said. “You are kind of wobbly, getting back to your hotel room.”

He added, “[It was] incredibly helpful with the tangible environment as opposed to Marvel when you’re talking to green screens, imaginary aliens. Everything was right there and you could touch.”

Evans recalled first being confused by the “Snowpiercer” script, saying, “When I first read the script, I didn’t quite get it. I was like, ‘So … what?’ Whenever it’s a movie that’s world-building, you’re creating a completely separate environment. There’s just kind of a conceit that you have to say, ‘OK, so everyone just accepts this, this is just how it is? No one is kind of outraged that this is the structure? That’s just the norm, OK.’ You kind of have to decide what part of your brain do you spend time wrapping your head around. Do you go the intimate road and just kind of make it about the character? Do you try and make it about what it took for that society to level into that place? It’s a challenge, but you get to watch Tilda Swinton in the movie and you get to watch her approach to this larger-than-life character.”

Evans continued, “We had some good rehearsal on that project as well. Director Bong is such a visionary. When you’re working with someone that knows exactly what they want, even if it’s not exactly the way you saw it, it breeds trust. And as an actor, that’s the most important thing, to trust the director. Otherwise, you’re playing defense. Otherwise, you’re like, ‘Alright, this first take, well, I’ll just do this, just so I can at least protect that. Then I’ll try this, but I don’t want to try that because I don’t know if they know how to use that take. Any take I give them can be used against me.’ And when you have a director who is so convinced of what their vision is, that’s when you say, ‘Great. You say jump, I’ll say “How high?”‘

The success of “Snowpiercer” went on to spur a TV show set in the same world.

In addition to Evans, other Marvel stars have since addressed working with green screen and VFX. Anthony Hopkins, who appeared in the “Thor” films, called it “pointless” acting and “Thor: Love and Thunder” actor Christian Bale admitted applying his typical Method techniques would have been “pitiful.”

“That’s the first time I’ve done that,” Bale said of working with green screens. “I mean, the definition of it is monotony. You’ve got good people. You’ve got other actors who are far more experienced at it than me. Can you differentiate one day from the next? No. Absolutely not. You have no idea what to do. I couldn’t even differentiate one stage from the next. They kept saying, ‘You’re on Stage Three.’ Well, it’s like, ‘Which one is that?’ ‘The blue one.’ They’re like, ‘Yeah. But you’re on Stage Seven.’ ‘Which one is that?’ ‘The blue one.’ I was like, ‘Uh, where?’”

International Sámi Film Institute’s managing director Anne-Lajla Utsi will now add “trailblazer” to her résumé as the recipient of the first-ever Women in Film and Television International Peace Prize.

The award ceremony will take place on Sept. 23 during the WIFTI Helsinki Summit.

The same week, WIFT Finland will present its digital “Equality Tool” for the film and TV industry to the participants at the Finnish Film Affair.

“The goal is to give this prize to someone who is a good ambassador for values that embrace inclusion, sustainability and peace,” says Helene Granqvist, outgoing WIFTI president. She added that Utsi will be awarded for her “amazing and tireless” commitment to spreading Sámi stories around the world. “Her work symbolizes the very core of the WIFTI Peace Prize.”

“As Indigenous people in the Nordic countries, we had to deal with hard assimilation policies, trying to erase our language, culture and identity. These policies are still casting shadows today,” Utsi tells Variety.

“It’s a big question for all of us: Are we going to reconcile? And what does that even mean? I guess it means moving forward from a painful past and building something better. Film, and all art, plays a big part in this peace work. It allows us to understand and love each other better.”

“We have to hold onto hope,” she adds.

With Sámi stories present at some of the biggest festivals, including Toronto offerings Katja Gauriloff’s “Je’vida,” Sara Margrethe Oskal’s “The Tundra Within Me,” and “Homecoming” by Suvi West and Anssi Kömi, things are looking up.

“We are seeing a change. We have so many talented filmmakers making beautiful films. It means so much, because we need narrative sovereignty. We want to decide which stories to tell,” she notes.

“We collaborate with bigger companies like Netflix and NRK, but it’s not about the money. It’s about authenticity. There is strength in our film community, because there is so much at stake: our future, our people, our land. We have so much to fight for, all the time. These stories are always about life and death.”

That being said, Sámi filmmakers are daring to leave the past behind.

“We needed to follow these painful stories and free ourselves from the trauma. But now, we have to make sure we are not lost in the past, because so much is happening today,” she says.

“Many of our films have been historical dramas, like Nils Gaup’s ‘Pathfinder’ or even Amanda Kernell’s ‘Sámi Blood.’ Now, we are starting to see more contemporary stories and different genres. We are getting comedies and horror films, films for children and animation.”

Oskar Östergren Njajta’s animation “Between Saajve and the Sky,” Egil Pedersen’s “Biru Unjárga” and Elle Sofe Sara’s “Árru,” and series “Story Hunters Sapmi,” “Siida” and “Oro Jaska” are among upcoming projects.

“We have the Arctic Indigenous Film Fund and the ‘Indigenous Witness’ program, which allows young filmmakers to make short films about climate change. It’s not just about us needing to tell our stories. The whole world needs them, because of our perspective on nature, sustainability and traditional livelihoods.”

Female filmmakers still reign supreme, however.

“[As the institute] we have been up and running for almost 15 years and among the directors, writers and producers that we support 70% of them are women. I don’t know where the men are. Maybe they are out hunting or reindeer herding?,” she laughs.

The WIFTI Peace Prize, funded by Granqvist and the founder of WIFT Caucasus Tsiako Abezadze – with the support of Wade Channell (Damn Fool Production) – will be awarded every second year, possibly growing into the WIFTI Peace Fund in the future.

“This prize recognizes and encourages these extraordinary women in their efforts to build a better world through the stories they tell,” says Channell, with Abezadze adding: “We, women filmmakers, stand shoulder to shoulder, capturing the beauty of life, championing not only our freedom but also the planet we call home.”

Former Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight has theories about why the show’s upcoming revival has been renamed.

Marvel’s original Daredevil series first premiered in 2015 on Netflix and ran for three seasons before getting canceled in 2018. In July 2022, Disney  — which owns Marvel — removed the show from its former streaming service and green-lit a sequel for Disney+ titled Daredevil: Born Again. The revived series is set to feature major elements from its predecessor including Charlie Cox as lead character Matthew Murdock.

DeKnight, who penned the OG series but won’t be involved in the new show, slammed Disney on Tuesday, September 19, for what he claims are “corporate shenanigans.”

“It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to first season,” DeKnight wrote via X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday. “Needs to be addressed by all the guild/unions and crushed!”

Hollywood came to a standstill amid the joint WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike — but not every TV show has stopped filming. In July 2023, SAG-AFTRA authorized a strike after the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) did not address any of their concerns regarding fair wages, the use of artificial intelligence and more […]

DeKnight noted that from what he can “understand” he isn’t “going to see a penny from Daredevil: Born Again” because the additional “Born Again” in the show’s title means Disney can “claim it’s a completely different show.”

He added: “You know, with the exact same two lead actors (who I love!) playing Daredevil and [William] Fisk [played by Vincent D’Onofrio].”

DeKnight’s claims were in response to a tweet from a Daredevil employee who alleged that the new series is “back to season one IATSE contract terms,” calling the process a “f—king scam.” They claimed that Disney officially canceled the series “once the crew got a full raise and holiday/vacation pay.”

The entertainment industry is heading for change as Hollywood actors join writers on the picket line.  The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists — a labor union that represents more than 160,000 TV and film actors — officially voted to join the Writers Guild of America in striking against the Alliance of […]

“I worked on all of the Marvel Netflix shows which all were canceled in season two or three. Our contracts only give us full vacation pay(like 36 cents per hour worked or some shit) on season three shows,” a second message from the IATSE member read. “Four years of work I never got a raise or vacation pay. Like $20,000.”

Despite DeKnight’s qualms with Disney’s alleged business procedures surrounding Born Again, the writer insisted he has “zero issue” with the new series and wants to see it succeed.

“To be clear, I can’t wait to see Charlie Cox and the amazing @vincentdonofrio reprise their iconic [roles],” he wrote via X on Monday. “But to claim this is a complete reboot and you don’t have to pay the original creatives is some corporate shenanigans, to say the least.”

DeKnight’s comments come amid the ongoing Hollywood strikes. Borth the WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) and SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) are striking because of stalled negotiations with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) that include issues of fair pay, streaming residual payments and the use of artificial intelligence in film and TV projects.

The WGA initially went on strike in May, while SAG-AFTRA joined them on the picket lines two months later in July.

New York has launched a new council aimed at addressing challenges to the city’s live entertainment industry.

On Monday, Mayor Eric Adams convened the inaugural meeting of the first-ever Live Performance Industry Council, which features a mix of leaders representing the theater, music and dance industries from the city’s arenas, cultural institutions, unions, nonprofit sector and city government.

“Live performance has long been the heart and soul of this city,” said Adams in a statement. “By bringing together leaders from across the industry and city government, we are not only supporting the individuals who make the live performance industry great, but also ensuring that New York City will always be a global creative capital.”

The council, which is co-chaired by Ken Sunshine, founder of Sunshine Sachs, and Coco Killingsworth, vice president of social impact at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, is focused on developing measures to support and drive growth within the city’s creative economy as it continues to return to — and aims to expand beyond — pre-pandemic levels.

“This is truly a unique moment and the beginning of an important conversation about the vital ecosystem of the live performing arts sector — the live beating heart of New York City,” said Killingsworth in a statement. “We are why people come to New York City and, more importantly, we are why they stay, and this council will help us address some of the very real challenges but, also, enable us to think big about the next chapter for New York City.”

“I commend Mayor Adams for convening one of the most distinguished meetings of leaders in live entertainment ever gathered together,” added Sunshine. “We look forward to both big and practical solutions to the challenges we all face in producing live shows in our great city.”

Various city departments were present at the Gracie Manor meeting, including MOME’s newly announced commissioner Pat Swinney Kaufman, and other leaders from housing, economic development and workforce and cultural affairs.

Among the 52 members of the council are representatives from venues like The Public Theater, The Apollo, Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall; producers from Disney Theatrical, the Nederlander Organization and the Shubert Organization; sports and entertainment complexes like Citi Field, the New York Yankees, Madison Square Garden Entertainment, Barclay Center and Lincoln Center; guilds, unions and trade associations, including IASTE, Actor’s Equity, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, The Broadway League and Off-Broadway League; alliances including Times Square Alliance, Asian American Arts Alliance and Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York; funds such as The Entertainment Community Fund and Theatre Development Fund; as well as various nonprofits like Bric Arts and the Black Theater Coalition.

The council comes four years after the New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment commissioned a cultural and economic impact study, a report that found nearly 750 venues and organizations generate $1.3 billion in economic output, over 8,400 full-time jobs and $512 million in wages.

The live performance group follows a growing series of councils created to address issues around and support the city’s entertainment community. That includes councils for TV, film and digital games, the Broadway Musicians Equity Partnership, an extension of the NYC Women’s Fund in Media, Music and Theatre and more.

“I think a lot of people picture, like, modern rappers who really just, like, pen and paper in the studio, writing down their raps, figuring it out, scratching it out, changing it.” “Yeah, no, we stopped writing a long time ago. Not many people write.” “Back in the day, when people were just using tape, you just had one take. So everybody had to be on point.” “There used to be a time before the 24 track, for instance. If a singer went in, you had to sing that [expletive], top to bottom, baby. You had to have it figured out.” “Most music up until about 20 years ago was always recorded on tape. It’s more of a process. It’s a lot more laborious, a little bit more tedious.” Rapping: “Three strikes and we might just blast —” “I’ve watched Tupac giving a speech — ‘Hey, we have two hours of studio time. Come here prepared.’” “We don’t have time or the luxury to spend all of this time doing one song. We don’t have it.” “Fast forward a little bit. Word starts to spread mid-to-late 90s that Jay doesn’t actually write any of his rhymes down.” “So you literally come in the studio and then formulate sentences in your head?” “Yeah.” “And then spit it to that beat?” “Yeah.” “And you never write down the lyrics?” “Never.” “Which leads to other rappers wanting to do the same thing.” “I found out that Jay wasn’t writing. I didn’t want to ever see a pen or paper, again, in my life.” “He has class, first in the lunch line. My lunch ticket let me eat rappers at lunch time.” “What I know is, when you see your hero can jump seven feet, it makes you want to jump eight.” “If it depends on me, 10 out of 10.” “You’re telling me, you’re falling out of love with me.” “I came up at the trenches.” “The problem is that not all of them are as great or as capable of doing it.” “Yeah, turn me up in my ear.” [rapping] “That’s no pen, no pad. They’re just going in and punching in.” “Punch in.” “Punch method.” “Punch and recording.” “Punching three more bars.” “I ain’t never wrote raps. I just be ready.” “Do you write, or do you punch in?” “I punch in. I don’t write.” “Today, ProTools is essentially, like, the pen and paper, and that’s where it becomes this different type of art form.” “It’s improvisational versus writing the stand-up piece. You know what I mean?” “It’s like freehand versus tracing.” “Oh OK.” “Keep that part for me, just punch me in.” “The artist might not really have the song written, but they’re not necessarily freestyling in the traditional sense, where they’re just going in and saying the first thing that comes to mind, and they’re doing that for four minutes straight.” “Punching in, like saying one bar at a time.” “I’ve got these racks that can’t fold in the wallet. I’m making deposits. “Definitely one line at a time.” “That bar, and you said the bar out there, and you play it all together. It sounds like a whole sentence. “They’re using punching in as a way to create their rhymes as opposed to a way to correct their rhymes. Yeah, I feel it’s really just a generational thing.” “But you don’t think you could end up with something better if you sometimes wrote some stuff?” “No.” “It’s just not for you?” “No, [expletive] that.” “Rap has grown. Rap has evolved, and there’s always good and bad when it comes to evolution. What we’re seeing is a lot of the same lane being explored over and over again.” “People think, oh, they just rap about this, or they’re just rapping about, like, the easy rhyme scheme or the easy — but to be in a studio and write five songs a day, seven days a week about new topics and make it sound different, it’s very, very impressive.” “It is a sport. It is a sport to it.” “Instead of one song for a week, it’s five songs a night, and you keep it pushing.” “Not that our artistry isn’t appreciated, but it’s more so like, all right, how fast are we getting this done?” “And I’m just saying that the unprofessional rap culture is what I’m a kid of. Guys were like, I’m just a street cat, and I’ll rap.” [rapping] “I jumped off the porch and bought me a gun.” “I just want people to know that, like, you’re not Jay-Z, you’re not a failure.” “It’s about you, whether you’re writing on a phone, a piece of paper, punching in, off the dome. It doesn’t matter.” “Rapping to me, coming from, like, how I feel right then and there. Like me writing down ain’t going to be the same energy of me saying it.” “You can’t really hold your technique over a younger generation’s head, right? Ultimately, it is about just getting the best end result.” [rapping] “I respect it all because it all takes work, and it all takes thought. Whether you’re sitting over a pad or you got to spend four hours figuring it out, piecing it together, punching in, if the end, result moves people, and mostly, the art is worth it.”

Former “Pose” star Angelica Ross is calling out TV super-producer Ryan Murphy.

Ross, who starred in two seasons of FX’s groundbreaking series, and has appeared in several seasons of Murphy’s “American Horror Story,” is alleging that Murphy left her “on read” after she reached out to him regarding the idea for an all-Black cast for a season of “American Horror Story.” She said a lack of communication left her wondering about her status with Murphy and FX and whether she should pursue other projects.

In several X posts on Tuesday, Ross shared email correspondence between herself and the Emmy winner.

“Remember your idea about a HORROR seasons starring Black women? Well I’m doing it,” Murphy wrote in an email to Ross in 2020, according to a screenshot she provided. “Not sure of the story yet, but we will start a writers room in the fall. Along with you, who are the four women I should get? I think you, Keke Palmer, Gabby … Not sure of the fourth?”

Several outlets have reported that the Gabby in the email is actor Gabourey Sidibe.

In a TikTok also posted on Tuesday, the “Transparent” actor showed two more emails that she said she sent to Murphy.

One email appeared to be a reply to his 2020 message. In it she wrote, “YAAAAAASSSSS! Debbi Morgan (“Eve’s Bayou”) the culture would LIVE and she’s a powerhouse actress. Also someone else like a Lynn Whitfield or Alfre Woodard would TURN IT.”

She added, “But, I would totally say Me, Keke Gabby, and Adina [Porter] or Angela Bassett, (but I know she’s probably locked on one of your other shows) Adina (also my sis Amiyah Scott (“STAR” on FOX) would be a great choice too. She is the one who introduced me to “AHS.” Really good instincts and timing and GORGEOUS.)”

After saying that she didn’t hear back from Murphy following that email exchange, Ross said she sent him flowers, as well as an email in 2022, but still received no response.

In her 2022 email to Murphy, Ross said she wrote, per a screenshot, “Good morning, up cleaning and organizing and thinking about what [‘AHS’] season 11’s focus could be and then just thought maybe just ask you that when that formulates if I could be on the production side as well. I think I could add a lot to the table in the overall storyline if we are still looking to a Black lead cast.”

Ross claimed Marvel had reached out to her and that she’d had extensive auditions with the studio — but she also was in limbo about her status with Murphy and FX.

“It’s not JUST that the idea changed. Things change all the time,” she wrote in an X post. “It’s that I called business affairs for MONTHS trying to get clarity if they were picking up my contract option or if I was ok to tell Marvel that I was available for whatever they were calling me for. I had been auditioning for THREE YEARS for marvel.”

Representatives for Murphy and FX did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment.

Summary

An Amazon has gone on a killing spree and all Amazons are banished from the United States; where does this leave the most famous Amazon, Wonder Woman?

Positives

If you’ve been seeing the preview art for Wonder Woman #1, you know how beautiful Daniel Sampere’s work on the issue is.  This book looks great whether or not you like Tom King’s story.  Even though this run of Wonder Woman relaunches with a new #1, it’s nice to see DC Comics incorporate the Legacy Numbering on the cover making this also Wonder Woman #801.  It’s important for these high-numbered series to reflect the historical significance of the characters and titles and the legacy numbering does that.

King’s plot for Wonder Woman #1 answers one question from the tease of this run  in Wonder Woman #800.  In Wonder Woman #800, Trinity, Diana’s future daughter, is seen talking to a mysterious older man with royal heritage.  This issue reveals the identity of that person, and he’s a new character at that.

To Be Decided

At this point, this revelation falls somewhere between positive or negative.  There is a parallel that King is trying to set up and it places this new character- the Sovereign- as a stand in for Donald Trump.  The Lasso of Lies he carries is simply the lies Trump has told and continues to tell.  It’s hard to determine at this point how this element will play out in this run, but it’s quite heavy handed and seems like it’s just King grinding his axe against Trump.

Leaning towards the negative is the fact that so far as we can tell the modus operandi of the Sovereign is identical to one of Wonder Woman’s earliest enemies, the Duke of Deception.  This makes the Sovereign redundant in Diana’s rogues gallery.  Furthermore, the last year of Wonder Woman written by Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan included a heavy dose of misogyny from Dr. Psycho which played out in a brainwashing scheme at the behest of Hera and other gods in the Greek Pantheon which…seems to be what the Sovereign has been doing to America .  Why recycle the plot points from the previous year’s Wonder Woman comics?

Negatives

Tom King’s plot for Wonder Woman #1 is contrived, forced and hurried.  It comes off as if King had this idea to make Wonder Woman an outlaw and the story that gets to that point doesn’t really interest him.  It’s clear that this issue sets up some moral dilemmas, but it doesn’t feel organic.  From the opening incident of the Amazon killing spree the situation escalates to an expulsion of all Amazons from the United States with the direct campaign against Diana led by Sarge Steel.  This brings up one of the odder points of the approach to this issue.  Diana doesn’t feel like the lead character in this issue.  For most of it Sarge Steel feels like the focus and the lead.  Diana feels like a secondary character in her own comic.  The story is being told by the Sovereign to Trinity whom we met for the first time in Wonder Woman #800.  This makes the story the story of the  Sovereign.  It’s a different and could be an interesting approach, but it does make the reader feel distant from Wonder Woman and her role in the story.  It also gives the impression that King is more interested in the Sovereign than Wonder Woman as a character.

We don’t get a believable explanation as to why all the Amazons are being expelled and why Diana’s standing doesn’t bring her more credibility with the U.S. Government.  It also doesn’t make sense that Wonder Woman wouldn’t have been on top of this situation from the outset.  Part of it may be that the story focuses on Sarge Steel from Sovereign’s point of view.  It not only contributes to the marginalization of Diana in her own book, but it takes away her agency as well.  She seems to be a pawn in Sovereign’s plot rather than the lead character.  There’s nothing wrong with Diana feeling like a pawn in the villain’s plot, but to experience it from a distance is awkward and further removes Diana from the centrality of the story.  Does King even want to write Wonder Woman or does he just want to write a Trump analog story?  Maybe this isn’t the best place for that.  King does have a history of putting characterization second, or even third to his plots and story concepts, so this shouldn’t be a surprise.  He may write Diana in character in this storyline, but she may end up being secondary.  I want to read a Wonder Woman story, not a Donald Trump story.  This could end up being a good comic, just not a good Wonder Woman comic.  Strange Adventures was a great comic, but a bad Adam Strange comic.  Human Target was a great comic, but a terrible JLI comic.  If you’re not here for the character, why are you here?

Negatives Cont’d

It’s clear King needs these elements in play for the story he wants to tell to be able to take place, but for it to be compelling the lead up has to be believable.  Readers won’t actually believe Wonder Woman is involved in any wrong doing and it’s not like she will become persona non grata in the United States within the DC Universe.  The story is suddenly tedious as it’s just a waiting game until the resolution.  There can be no real stakes for Wonder Woman based on the extreme nature of the set up.  It’s not hard to imagine that King is using this story as a metaphor for how minorities are treated in the United States, but once again the reaction against the Amazons is so extreme it just isn’t believable.

The story of Trinity’s conception is teased in Wonder Woman #800 as well, indicating that it is somehow connected to the story that begins in Wonder Woman #1.  While there are no answers in this issue, the tone of the issue leaves an uneasy feeling about how Trinity will be conceived.  There’s a lot of unwarranted aggression against the Amazons as a people that falls somewhere between racism and misogyny.  Sarge Steel is at the center of this though there other vignettes of average citizens with similar attitudes.

Verdict

The art is so good, one can easily flip through the pages and just admire them regardless of the story being told.  Unfortunately, the forthcoming story that is suggested by this issue is pretty boring.  Even with the mystery surrounding the identity of Trinity’s father that is wrapped up in all this, Trinity’s first appearance was disappointing enough to bring no added excitement to the beginning of the story in Wonder Woman #1.  To enjoy this issue, you may need to forget this is a Wonder Woman comic and tell yourself it’s a dystopian tale of a world you don’t really know.  If you go in thinking it’s about Wonder Woman, you will most likely be disappointed.  Overall, it’s not a strong start to this run outside of Sampere”s exceptional art.  Lastly, was the killer supposed to look like Cassie Sandsmark?

I’m so glad to see Days Gone get some recognition, because it absolutely is a BEAUTIFUL looking game, and in other times, downright incredible, with its snow forming on the ground over time and the storms coming in with the winds blowing the trees is a sight to behold! I remember at one point I was using photo mode and snapped this photo (I swear) using the filters and other effects the shot I captured looked so realistic, it was remarkable. It was of a leaf ? (others were around it) by this train track and the area was wet from the rain. I captured many others, which turned out fantastic. I’m sure ya’ll captured some fantastic one’s yourselves. Oh, and the horde of freakers 500 coming at you is insane and a sight to see. Wish we could get a sequel, Days Gone deserves it!

Uncharted 4 – Man, that game still blows me away still to this day. ND really captured the adventures of Nate, Elena, Sully and Sam in a way that was not just so stunning to look at, but in a way that EVERY new location, be it in a new area of this specific city, town, jungle, mountain range etc all felt truly living, with life. One of my favorite locations was the old lady’s mansion, such a simple mission, yet so fun, intriguing, sad, and intense all at the same time. And the richness of detail packed into the objects in that mansion is superbly detailed. Anyone notice the couch pillow in Nate and Elena’s house actually mushes down when she rests her arm on it when she’s talking to Nate about him taking the job? ND delivered with best in class character models, yet again. Dirt in nails, I mean? I remember capturing a photo of Nate hanging from a ledge in Madagascar and I snapped a pic, zoomed in, and dirt was in his finger nails, that’s just insane detail. Add on the chest hair blowing in the wind lol.

RDR2 – Masterpiece of a game! In visual details, how this game still looks better than games nowadays (and they don’t even have to be open world) is something else. Fantastic character models, hair/facial hair that grows in real-time, awesome cloud system, NPC characters in the world actually eat their food, cut up their ? among other new details being discovered these almost 5 years later, it’s amazing. Horse testicles. Has me intrigued to see how GTA6 will deliver in comparison to dynamic events etc.

The Last of Us Part 2 – ND took PS4 to its limits with this game. The level of detail in these models is striking, again, best in class, along with the environments. Foliage is phenomenal and doesn’t look like that “cheap” looking video game grass. It’s such a step up in quality. The gore is a visual ummm, I don’t want to say delight, but showcase for depicting how unforgiving that world is. The level of pain, fear and loss on the faces of NPC’s when you take their life in this game as Ellie or Abbie, man I always felt bad about that. And the dogs too… until the dogs came at me, than all bets were off lol. But again, there’s many more details that players who’ve not played this game must see for themselves to appreciate. Motion matching technology to me tho has to be the most impressive thing above even the visuals. Although both compliment each other, playing the game with the tech and the way everything flows so fluidly and smoothly is like playing an E3 demo, each play through feels just that damn good.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has vowed to protect traditional TV viewers as she unveils planned research on the future of television in the UK.

In her speech later today at the RTS Cambridge Convention, Frazer, who has been in post for more than six months now, will say attention has pivoted to “making sure people are not left behind.”

“New ways of consuming TV should not come at the expense of those who still enjoy terrestrial television,” she will say, in conversation with Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon.

Addressing this year’s theme of Too Much To Watch, the minister is expected to say that a huge variety of online platforms have supercharged creativity across the UK and global TV industry, but leaps forward in technology should not negatively impact on people who rely on traditional ways of watching TV.

Frazer will keynote the bi-annual convention just two days after the British broadcasters unveiled Freely, a landmark free TV service organized by Freeview-operator Everyone TV that will deliver live televison over broadband. This followed a speech from BBC Director General Tim Davie late last year in which he imagined an IP-only future where linear channels are only available via the internet.

Frazer’s research will in part help inform long-term policy decisions on whether to extend the current commitment to keep Freeview on air until at least 2034.

“We’re not going to pull the rug from under the devoted audiences of Freeview channels,” she will tell the Convention. “We want terrestrial television to remain accessible for the foreseeable future.”

More announcements are expected during Frazer’s full speech this afternoon. She previously unveiled an ambition to grow the creative industries, which incorporates TV and film, by £50B ($62B).

A showrunners picket at Fox that started as a way to show solidarity during the strike ended up raising close to $45,000 for crew members who have been adversely affected by the work stoppage.

Strike Captain Amy Berg encouraged showrunners who attended the Sept. 12 picket to bring along gift cards so she could distribute them to support staff in need. More than 300 high-powered scribes, including Steve Levitan, Shawn Ryan, Aline Brosh-McKenna, Carlton Cuse, Rene Balcer, Jack Burditt, Mike Scully, Matt Selman, Andy Gordon, Tucker Cawley and David Shore, walked the line that day.

At today’s IATSE appreciation day at Fox, Berg distributed the gift cards to 115 people. She plans to mail more out this week to crew members.

“I was looking at all these amazing funds we have out there, but noticed that most require a long application process which can delay people getting the help they need,” Berg (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Alienist) told Deadline. “I just thought, what could we do that offered immediate assistance?”

Those who participated in today’s IATSE appreciation picket received at least $150 word of cards to grocery stores and retail outlets like Target.

“Things everyone can use,” said Berg. “I basically started a nonprofit in one week, thanks to the generosity of my fellow showrunners.”

Showrunners have already contributed more than $500,000 recently to the Entertainment Community Fund. (Click for the showrunner donation link). Most of the donors have been anonymous.

There’s renewed optimism that the WGA and AMPTP can reach a deal now that both parties have agreed to meet tomorrow.

The WGA sent out a note to members confirming the talks: “The WGA and AMPTP now have a confirmed schedule to bargain this week, starting on Wednesday. You might not hear from us in the coming days while we are negotiating, but know that our focus is getting a fair deal for writers as soon as possible. We’ll reach out again when there is something of significance to report. In the meantime, please continue to demonstrate your commitment and unity by coming out to the picket lines – for yourselves and fellow writers, SAG-AFTRA, other unions’ members, and all those in our community who are impacted by the strikes.”

Whether you’re already lighting your autumnal candles or still reveling in summer, like it or not, the best fall jackets (read “the ultimate wardrobe essential”) have started hitting the stores.

Though teddy coats and puffers are still popular (and practical), the prep school trend will continue to reign supreme in 2023 (think tailored trench coats and baggy blazers), Jessica Sockel, stylist for online retailer Stitch Fix, tells Glamour. Maximalism is also having a moment, with saturated shades, rich textures, bold prints, and oversized proportions on the rise. (This season is all about “embracing voluminous silhouettes,” Sockel says.)

Trends aside, the classics aren’t going anywhere, but they are being given a slight update. While you can never go wrong with your go-to black moto jacket, Sockel says warm browns and neutrals, particularly when it comes to suede, shearling, and leather jackets, will be prominent. Plus, wool ponchos and scarf jackets are key outerwear styles to consider.

From casual (yet work-appropriate) shackets to layer over your fall dresses, and timeless denim, to light packable picks for travel, and warmer coats that double as cozy blankets, these stylish fall jackets will make you the belle of the… pumpkin patch.

It’s been nearly a decade since we’ve seen Sylvester Stallone’s team of elite mercenaries known as The Expendables take on one of its explosive missions, but now he and Jason Statham are back, and they’ve added some new names to the roster for Expend4bles. The third sequel, formerly titled The Expendables 4, has seen a number of delays over the years after 2014’s PG-13-rated The Expendables 3 was panned by critics. The fourth installment has returned to original form with an R rating, and those who have been able to attend advance screenings of the movie are hitting social media with their first reactions. Although opinions are somewhat split, moviegoers seem to feel very strongly.

Alongside Sly Stallone and Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture reprise their roles, and the franchise welcomes Megan Fox, Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent), Andy Garcia and more as newcomers. Former stuntman Scott Waugh takes the helm for Expend4bles, which will see the group attempt to prevent a terrorist organization from smuggling nuclear warheads. We’re expecting some big action and some sexy fight scenes involving Fox and Statham, so let’s see what people think. Eric Eisenberg of CinemaBlend doesn’t pull punches, describing the fourth movie as an “embarrassment for all involved.” In his words:

Ever wonder what the rock bottom nadir of a franchise looks like? Prepare to be stunned by the awfulness of Expend4bles. It has the aesthetics of a 1995 Direct-To-Video movie, and simply describing story/plot developments sounds like mockery. An embarrassment for all involved.

Oh, I’ve been there…the office job. I connected a bit too well with Max Mir’s short film, Walking Fernando. Nadia (Fabienne Piolini-Castle) is said office worker. She’s grinding out the nine-to-five as a travel agent, and just before ending the day, her supervisor insists she stays behind to tick off a list of things he needs done by “EOD.” When Nadia points out that everyone is already leaving, her supervisor moves a fish bowl with goldfish Fernando (voiced by Javier Bardem) inside.

As the frustrated Nadia gets to the first item, Fernando begins talking to her. He declares that he is Fernando, “The Ruler of all Seas,” “Explorer of the Unknown,” and “Conqueror of all Thinking Minds.” Pointing out that Nadia is a travel agent and convinces her to take the goldfish for a walk to new and exciting places.

“…Nadia is a travel agent and convinces her to take the goldfish for a walk to new and exciting places.”

Walking Fernando is a simple and sweet story of personal freedom and not being held captive by the fishbowls in our lives. Almost too simple of a story. With wonderful performances by Fabienne Piolini-Castle and Javier Bardem, the short film acts as a breath of fresh air in our lives, encouraging us to take a walk outdoors from our stuffy offices and home…and breathe.

Walking Fernando may not change the world, but it might just change your life in a small and simple way.

A big performance with big emotional impact! Sofia Vergara was overwhelmed during Tuesday’s America’s Got Talent by her Golden Buzzer recipient, singer Gabriel Henrique.

ET’s Deidre Behar spoke with Vergara after Tuesday’s fifth live qualifying round, and she opened up about one of the most impressive acts of the nights — Henrique’s high-note hitting performance of “Something Beautiful” by Jacob Banks.

“I mean, it was super emotional,” Vergara said of her tearful, joyous response to the epic number. “I was prepared for him to be good, but never to be this amazingly good.”

According to Vergara, Henrique’s song choice was far from what she or the other judges expected, considering he’d first blown them away — and earned Vergara’s Golden Buzzer — during the audition rounds with a rendition of “Run to You” by Whitney Houston

“I was surprised by the song because, you know, it’s a very difficult song, it’s a song that I don’t think we were expecting,” Vergara said. “I think we were expecting, like, a diva song, and then he was gonna go crazy.”

“And so, at the beginning, I was like, ‘Aye, no, he’s not going to be able to go as high as he can with this song,'” she continued. “[But] you saw it. You heard it!”

“It was like giving me goosebumps!” she added. “It was super crazy, because he’s so lost in his performance. It’s really, really something special to watch in person.”

Fans will have to wait until tomorrow to see if Henrique gets enough votes to move onto the finals, but Vergara has high hopes, “Because he really deserves to.”

“Although I have to say that it’s going to be difficult this season, because there are so many great talents,” she added.

Season 18 of America’s Got Talent is quickly approaching its finale, which will cap off a particularly interesting and challenging year for Vergara herself — who split with husband Joe Manganiello after seven years of marriage, and has subsequently been living her best life with her close friends.

“It’s been an interesting year for me. A lot of changes,” Vergara shared. “A lot of good and craziness. Bad things happened, and good things happened. A mix of what makes life so entertaining and interesting. So I can’t complain.”

“I’ve had a great, great time. And I mean there’s always time for more good stuff [to come],” she shared.

America’s Got Talent live results show kicks off on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

A big performance with big emotional impact!

Along the southeastern edge of Oklahoma, where expansive cattle ranches and empty storefronts dot the landscape, the lack of high-speed internet service has become a daily frustration for residents.

Wanda Finley, a fourth-grade teacher in Sawyer, Okla., said the satellite service at her home was often too slow to use, and it sometimes went out for days. She cannot schedule medical appointments, request prescription refills or pay her bills online until she gets to work. Nearly every weekend, she drives about 40 minutes to school to prepare her weekly lesson plan because it can take minutes for a single web page to load at home.

“I’m hoping it will change,” Ms. Finley, 60, said, sitting in her home on a recent afternoon.

If President Biden gets his way, Ms. Finley and her neighbors will benefit from a $42.5 billion program to expand fast internet access across the country. The funding, which was included in the 2021 infrastructure law, is part of an initiative that has high ambitions: to provide “affordable, reliable high-speed internet” access for every home and business by 2030.

The effort is meant to close the “digital divide” by ensuring that all Americans can connect to fast internet, given the critical role it plays in economic opportunities, education, health care and other areas. The Biden administration has also invested more than $22 billion in other programs to build broadband networks and reduce the cost of internet bills.

The lack of broadband infrastructure is particularly problematic in rural areas, where internet service is often unavailable or limited. Roughly 24 percent of Americans in rural areas lack high-speed internet service as defined by the new program, compared with 1.7 percent in urban areas. Research has shown that internet connectivity can fuel economic growth in rural areas, helping to create jobs, attract workers and increase home values.

Attempts to get broadband to everyone are not new: The federal government has already pumped billions into efforts that have had mixed results. Biden administration officials have said the new program, coupled with other federal and state funding, would be enough to finally reach everyone who lacked high-speed internet access.

But some state officials and industry analysts remain wary and have raised concerns about whether the funds will achieve all of the administration’s goals.

In part, that’s because of the sheer cost of deploying broadband infrastructure in rural and sparsely populated areas. It can be expensive to lay fiber-optic cable when homes are spread far apart and terrain challenges make it difficult to dig in the ground. Labor shortages could further drive up construction costs and delay projects.

There are 8.5 million “unserved” and 3.6 million “underserved” locations across the country, according to Federal Communications Commission data. Each state received a minimum of $100 million from the $42.5 billion bucket, plus additional funds based on its number of unserved locations. States must first address areas that have no or insufficient internet service, and can then use funds to build out in underserved areas. Remaining funds can be used on community institutions and then issues such as affordability.

The success of the initiative is expected to vary across states. Some, like Louisiana and Virginia, have already said they anticipate covering every unserved and underserved location. Others have expressed more skepticism about the funding’s reach.

Edyn Rolls, Oklahoma’s director of broadband strategy, said that it was unlikely that the state, with its large rural population, would have enough funds to reach every underserved location, and that covering all of the unserved areas could be a challenge.

State officials said that recent versions of the F.C.C.’s map showing available internet service across the country had improved, but it could still be overstating coverage. Local governments and providers will be able to challenge existing data, but state allocations are already set, meaning funds would have to be stretched further if officials identified more locations that lacked high-speed service.

Ms. Rolls said there was a “real potential” that such a scenario could develop, adding that officials have heard from residents who say there is “definitely an overstatement of service.” And even though she said fiber would be a better long-term investment, a mix of technologies would have to be deployed to reach every unserved location.

Even with the grants, companies might not find it profitable to build everywhere. Robert Osborn, director of California’s communications division, said some locations in the state, which is geographically diverse with large areas that are hard to reach, are not likely to receive any provider interest. To attract bidders, Mr. Osborn said, the state could in some cases reduce the requirement for providers to cover at least 25 percent of a project’s price tag, but that risks drawing money away from other projects.

“It’s not as simple as giving money to a major internet service provider and saying, ‘Go build there,’” Mr. Osborn said.

Evan Feinman, the director of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s $42.5 billion program, said officials were confident that the federal and state funds would be enough to cover every unserved and underserved location, meaning every American would have access to an internet speed of at least 100 megabits per second for downloads and 20 megabits for uploads.

Still, he said some projects could take as much as five years to complete, and he anticipated construction would not start until late 2024. Although he said most locations would receive fiber connections, he expected others would be covered by fixed wireless or satellite technology.

Satellite is not considered reliable under the program rules, but Mr. Feinman said some services were better than others, and states could use funds for satellite equipment and service for a handful of remote locations. Starlink, a satellite technology made by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is considered to be more reliable, but the hardware costs hundreds of dollars, and it can take months to get off wait lists.

The funding’s reach will matter for Americans who have long lacked high-speed internet access. Ms. Finley said she wanted to assign homework that involved more online research, because it would accelerate her fourth-grade students’ learning. But many could not complete it. Only three of the 20 students in her homeroom have sufficient internet access at home. The rest do not have service or can use only their parents’ cellphones.

A few miles away in Fort Towson, Okla., which has about 600 residents, Mayor Tami Barnes said people complained constantly about internet speeds, which she called a “huge damper” on the local economy. On a recent afternoon, the busiest part of town was the parking lot of a convenience store and gas station. The other two main businesses are a steakhouse and Dollar General store.

Although internet bills are a financial burden for many families, Ms. Barnes said more residents would probably attend medical appointments online if they had high-speed access, because many often travel up to three hours to see specialized doctors.

Other states with low population densities, such as Montana, could also face more challenges. In Broadwater County, Mont., where many homes are separated by vast stretches of grassy land and some are tucked in mountainous areas, residents said the lack of fast service made it difficult to do things like work from home.

Denise Thompson, 58, who operates a cattle ranch with her husband in Townsend, Mont., said she wanted to start a website to ship more beef products, but she was unsure how she could operate it at home because she relied on her phone’s hot spot for internet access and her connection was slow. She has not tried streaming a movie in about a year because it is usually stuck buffering for minutes.

Her house sits in a gulch in between two tall hills and her nearest neighbor is about three miles away, so her only other option is satellite service. Even with the new federal money, Ms. Thompson said she was skeptical she would see more reliable options.

“I really don’t expect that to happen,” she said.

Lindsey Richtmyer, a county commissioner, said many locations would be categorized as underserved but actually received slower service than reflected by the F.C.C.’s map. County officials are encouraging residents to take state speed tests in hopes of identifying much of the area as unserved.

Estimates have found that Montana would need more than $1.2 billion to deploy fiber to all unserved and underserved locations, a shortfall of more than $500 million. Misty Ann Giles, the director of Montana’s Department of Administration, said a mix of technologies would be required to reach everyone, because deploying fiber could cost the state up to $300,000 in some locations.

“Obviously more money would have been appreciated,” she said. “But we’re going to figure it out and make it work.”

If you recently discovered The Nice Guys after watching Ryan Gosling in Barbie and are looking for something similar, director Shane Black’s first film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is his earlier take on the buddy action-comedy genre — the seeds of what Black perfected in The Nice Guys were planted in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Like in The Nice Guys, there’s a private investigator at the center of the story, only instead of teaming up with an enforcer-for-hire, he’s working with a petty thief posing as an actor. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang stars Robert Downey Jr. as the burglar who also acts as the movie’s narrator, Harry Lockhart, opposite Val Kilmer as the P.I., referred to exclusively as Gay Perry; Michelle Monaghan completes their trio as Harmony, Harry’s childhood crush who moved to Los Angeles and ends up embroiled in the same murder investigation as the two men. The plot itself is a lot of fun. It’s twisty and the perfect satirical take on the noir crime genre, especially considering it takes some elements from a real 1940s detective novel. But it’s the acting that truly makes this movie what it is. It’s such a treat to watch Downey Jr. and Kilmer go toe-to-toe with this genuinely funny material; the tight dialogue and their bantering back-and-forth is what puts the “comedy” in this “dark comedy.”

Chris Evans talks about his wife in a new interview.

Chris Evans made a rare statement about his wife Alba Baptista in a new interview. the couple tied the knot earlier this month.

Chris Evans has finally let fans in on his relationship with wife, Alba Baptista. The Captain America star was secretly dating her since what is believed to be 2021. They were spotted together for the first time in November 2022 and it was earlier this year that Chris confirmed the relationship with a post on Valentine’s Day. Earlier this month, the actors reportedly got married as well.

While Chris has maintained secrecy around his wedding, in a new interview with GQ, he made a brief mention about Alba. The interview appears to be taken before they got married. In the interview, Chris confessed he hasn’t worked in a movie since he began dating Alba and he has no regrets about it.

“I haven’t worked all year and I don’t plan to, which has been lovely,” he said, mentioning that he has no movie slated for 2023. “My girlfriend that I’ve had for a while, when we began dating, I was like: ‘Yeah, I do one movie a year. I try to never work now.’ And then, after like a few months of dating, boom, guess what? We’re living in Atlanta for a year. Get ready. And even when that year was happening, I was like, man, never again,” he added.

Earlier this month, Page Six reported that Chris Evans is now a married man. The insider claimed that the wedding ceremony took place in Massachusetts, at the couple’s Boston home. The intimate ceremony was attended by only closest family and friends. An insider informed the publication that the guests were asked to sign NDAs and ‘phones were forfeited.’ While Chris and Alba are yet to confirm or clarify reports about their wedding, a couple of photos from Boston have surfaced online hinting at the guest list.

Stars like Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan Downey; Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky; and Jeremy Renner enjoying a meal in the five-star Newbury Boston hotel, close to Chris’ house.

For the unversed, Alba Baptista is born in Lisbon. The Portugal actress is best know for her role in Warrior Nun. She made her English debut with the Netflix title. She has also starred in films and shows such as A Impostora, Filha da Lei, A Criação, and Jogo Duplo. In 2022, she was seen in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

Adding to the list of changes Sony made to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s home release, fans spotted a subtle alteration to one of Oscar Isaac’s lines as Spider-Man 2099.

Spider-Verse 2 has become quite the object of fascination since its digital and physical release, as eagle-eyed web-heads started picking out small differences between the theatrical version and the one that made it into their homes.

These have come in the form of entire scene changes to minute alterations being made to lines.

It remains unknown exactly why these changes were made, but many have attributed it to just how “last-minute” the theatrical cut came together.

One Spider-Verse 2 Line Change for Oscar Isaac

Sony Pictures Animation

The latest change to be found in the home release for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sees an alternate take being used for a line from Oscar Isaac’s web-slinging antihero.

This change sees Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara (aka Spider-Man 2099) sporting a slightly different intonation during his explanation of canon events to Miles Morales.

Miguel O'Hara Oscar Isaac Spider-Verse 2
Sony Pictures Animation

In the new version of Miguel’s recount of how he lost his daughter, audiences hear Isaac’s voice break a tad on the line “I found a world where I had a family,” offering even more anguish in his performance to what was there before:

“Because I broke it one myself. I found a world where I had a family. Where I was happy. At least a version of me was.”

The theatrical reading of the line still held emotional weight, but it lacked the vulnerability that the altered take does.

For a comparison of the two lines see the video below:

Do These Changes Matter to Spider-Verse 2?

As is the case with nearly every one of these alterations that have come to light thus far, fans of Spider-Verse 2 are likely going to look at this line change and wonder – ”Why the heck did Sony even bother?”

Each of these home release differences has been fairly minute, changing the way something is said to making minor adjustments to character actions in the background.

And ultimately, watching Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse remains mostly the same experience as it was in theaters, despite all of the differences found in the at-home release.

The reason behind the changes likely has to do with how hot the Spidey-centric sequel came into theaters.

Much has been made about how intensive the production process for Spider-Verse 2 was. While the studio got a movie into theaters on time for its June release, it may not have 100% been the cut the Across the Spider-Verse 2 creative team wanted.

Maybe all of these changes would have been made to the theatrical version if the people behind it had an extra six months to work on the wall-crawling epic.

Judging from the fact that there were even updates being made to the film as it was showing in theaters, it feels like that is most likely the case.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is available of digital and physical purchase now.

Summary

  • The directors of the unreleased Batgirl feature express sadness and disappointment at seeing The Flash on the big screen, knowing their potential masterpiece will never be seen.
  • The changing focus at Warner Bros. under new leadership led to the cancelation of Batgirl, causing disappointment and lost opportunities in the cinematic community.
  • Despite their lowest career point, the directors harbor no animosity towards Warner Bros. and continue to have a fervor for the DC realm, with hopes of adding to its legacy in the future.

In the ever-vibrant tapestry of cinema, where artistic endeavors meet the grandiose world of superhero realms, sometimes even the most promising projects meet untimely ends. Such is the story of the unreleased Batgirl feature, which has morphed into an emblematic tale of unfulfilled visions and lingering sentiments of ‘what could have been’ in the dynamic landscape of the movie industry. As directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah navigated the challenging waves that followed the abrupt cessation of their dream project, they find themselves dwelling on the remnants of a journey left incomplete.

In an intimate conversation with Insider, the duo opened up about their emotional experience witnessing The Flash on the big screen, a sentiment akin to standing at the sidelines while a potential masterpiece they had fostered remained cocooned, never to see the light of day. “We watched it and we were sad,” confessed Adil, a tinge of melancholy palpable in his voice. A bond with the audience, who they consider their ‘ultimate boss,’ remained unrealized, leaving a gaping void filled with visions and narratives that now linger in the corridors of might-have-beens.

Just over two years ago, excitement buzzed in the air as Warner Bros. Discovery spearheaded the venture that promised a fresh and grounded take on Gotham City, reminiscent of the vivid imagination that Tim Burton infused in his rendition of Batman’s world. Leslie Grace was preparing to immerse herself in the towering role of Batgirl, to be supported by a powerhouse cast featuring Brendan Fraser, J.K. Simmons, and the legendary Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman, marking his first return since Batman Returns of 1992.

However, the changing tides under CEO David Zaslav’s leadership shifted the focus towards making DC movies theatrical events. The subsequent decision to cancel Batgirl, which was in the post-production phase, sent ripples of disappointment and lost opportunities through the cinematic community. Adil and Bilall, who had previously showcased their directorial prowess in the 2020 blockbuster Bad Boys for Life, reminisced about the golden days on set with a glimmer of nostalgia. The opportunity to depict Keaton’s return as Batman in their narrative canvas had been an exhilarating experience, now tinged with a bittersweet hue. Bilall fondly remembered the electrifying experience of directing the veteran actor, a moment where he transcended from a filmmaker to a starstruck child, momentarily lost in the magnetic aura of Batman’s world.

In the Wake of Batgirl: A Tale of Resilience, Unfinished Business, and Hopes for a Grand Narrative

In this period of disenchantment, a ray of hope was ignited through the steadfast support and friendship demonstrated by the ensemble cast, Keaton being notable, who extended heartfelt communication echoing sympathy and mutual dissatisfaction. Amidst an ocean of unrealized opportunities, the bond cultivated through their collective experiences blossomed into a glowing emblem of hope.

While Adil labeled the occurrence as their “career’s greatest low point,” there isn’t an ounce of animosity harbored against Warner Bros. by the directors. Their fervor for the DC realm continues unabated, propelled by an unquenchable thirst to add to the legacy that has captivated viewers for many ages. Bilall articulated the shared feelings of yearning and drive that continually burn within them, manifesting their undiminished vitality and respect for the craft of cinema. “There’s still a feeling of unfinished business,” he stated, echoing the dreams and aspirations of countless artists who dare to envision grand narratives.

Venturing into their upcoming project, the Syrian war narrative Rebel, Adil and Bilall bring along a wealth of acquired wisdom and a still blazing zest for the universe of DC comics. With eyes filled with hope and hearts brimming with love for the enigmatic realms of Gotham City, the duo stands ready to embrace future projects with open arms. “If we got another chance to be part of it, we’d do it,” asserted Adil, a firm reflection of their unyielding spirit and a vibrant testament to their undying love for the craft.

On the winding road of cinema, where sometimes opportunities escape, leaving remnants of unspoken narratives, the chronicle of Batgirl endures as a lively testament to the zest, grit, and unvanquished dreams that power the domain of filmmaking – a universe where each setback transforms into a ladder to grander narrative realms.

After a day of leaks comprising an all-digital Xbox Series X, an advanced controller, a “cloud-hybrid” console, fruitless Nintendo acquisition plans and some very mean words about Baldur’s Gate 3, Xbox head Phil Spencer has spoken publicly — and semi-privately — about the situation for the first time.

On X, Spencer said, “It is hard to see our team’s work shared in this way because so much has changed and there’s so much to be excited about right now, and in the future.” He added that the company “will share the real plans when we are ready.”

In an internal memo sent to employees at Microsoft’s gaming division, and published in full by The Verge, Spencer went further. The full note reads:

Today, several documents submitted in the court proceedings related to our proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard were unintentionally disclosed. I know this is disappointing, even if many of the documents are well over a year old and our plans have evolved.

I also know we all take the confidentiality of our plans and our partners’ information very seriously. This leak obviously is not us living up to that expectation. We will learn from what happened and be better going forward. We all put incredible amounts of passion and energy into our work, and this is never how we want that hard work to be shared with the community. That said, there’s so much more to be excited about, and when we’re ready, we’ll share the real plans with our players.

In closing, I appreciate all of the work that you pour into Team Xbox to surprise and delight our players. In the days and weeks ahead, let’s stay focused on what we can control: continuing the amazing success of Starfield, the upcoming launch of the incredible and accessible Forza Motorsport, and continuing to build games, services and devices that millions of players can enjoy.

Undoubtedly, it’s been a long day for everyone at Xbox. Spencer is doing his best in both missives to downplay the significance of the leaked documents by suggesting that Xbox’s hardware plans have changed since they were first internally shared in 2022. The original slides outline a plan to debut a disc-less, cylindrical, 2TB version of the Xbox Series X in 2024, as well as an updated controller with “precision haptic feedback” (like PlayStation’s DualSense) and direct-to-cloud capabilities (like Stadia’s controller). Looking even further ahead, the documents included plans for a 10th-gen Xbox console with a focus on “cloud-hybrid games,” penciled in for a 2028 release.

Also, Spencer really wanted to buy Nintendo at one point, apparently (but it seems Microsoft is settling for Activision-Blizzard instead, which is how we ended up in this leaky mess to begin with). We’ve rounded up all the news from today’s document dump right here.

In the world of filmmaking, storytelling is not limited to just visual elements. The art of screenwriting plays a pivotal role in conveying emotions, themes, and character development.

One powerful literary device that screenwriters often employ is anaphora.

Anaphora can elevate your screenplay to a whole new level by emphasizing key ideas and creating a rhythmic, memorable experience by emphasizing key moments for the audience. But what is it, and how can you use it in your screenplays?

In this article, we’ll explore what anaphora is, provide clear examples, and discuss how you can use it effectively in your scripts.

Let’s get started.

What is Anaphora? Definition & Examples of Anaphorawww.youtube.com

Anaphora Definition

Anaphora, derived from the Greek word “anapherein” which means to carry back, is a rhetorical device that involves the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses, sentences, or verses.

It is commonly used in literature, poetry, speeches, and, yes, even in film scripts.

Help Me Understand Anaphora

When I was writing this, I found the definition to be a bit vague, but when I saw this specific example, it made me understand the concept.

In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, he uses this literary device to drive his point home. Check it out:

The speech reads, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.’ I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream…”

In this excerpt, Martin Luther King Jr. uses the phrase “I Have a Dream” as an anaphora.

It is repeated at the beginning of successive sentences to emphasize his vision of equality and justice. The repetition not only adds emphasis but also creates a rhythmic and memorable quality to the speech, making it one of the most iconic and powerful moments in history.

How Is Anaphora a Writer’s Secret Weapon?

As a writer, I’m always looking for little tricks or advantages that can help each scene pop on its own or just gather the audience in for the experience.

Anaphora serves several purposes, including creating emphasis, establishing rhythm, and reinforcing themes or ideas.

and there are a few more ways it can be seen as a writer’s secret weapon.

  1. Emphasis: Anaphora allows you to emphasize key points, themes, or emotions in your story. Repetition draws the audience’s attention and underscores the significance of the repeated elements.
  2. Rhythm: Anaphora can establish a rhythmic quality in your screenplay, making it more engaging and memorable. It creates a cadence that captures the audience’s attention.
  3. Theme: By repeating specific words or phrases, you can reinforce the central themes or ideas of your film. This helps in conveying your message effectively.
  4. Choose Your Words Wisely: Select words or phrases that are central to your story or character development. Make sure they resonate with the themes you want to emphasize.
  5. Consider Timing: Use anaphora strategically. It can be particularly powerful in pivotal moments, such as monologues, speeches, or emotional turning points.
  6. Balance: While anaphora can be a potent tool, don’t overuse it. Too much repetition can become tiresome for the audience. Use it judiciously to maintain its impact.

Examples of Anaphora in Film & TV

Anaphora is a powerful rhetorical device that can be found in film and television scripts. Here are some examples of anaphora in film and TV:

1. Dead Poets Society (1989):

  • John Keating (played by Robin Williams): “Carpe Diem. Seize the Day..“

In this scene, John Keating repeats the phrase “Carpe Diem” (seize the day) to inspire his students to make the most of their lives. The anaphora reinforces the central theme of the film, encouraging the characters and the audience to live life to the fullest.

2. The Dark Knight (2008):

  • The Joker (played by Heath Ledger): “Do I really look like a guy with a plan?”

The Joker’s anaphoric repetition of “Do I” highlights his chaotic and unpredictable nature, emphasizing his disregard for plans and order. This technique adds depth to his character.

3. The Wire (TV series 2002-2008):

  • Omar Little (played by Michael K. Williams): “You Come At the King, You Best Not Miss.”

Omar Little’s repeated phrase “You come at the king” is a form of anaphora used to emphasize the consequences of challenging authority figures. It becomes a signature catchphrase for his character.

4. The West Wing (TV series 1999-2006):

  • President Josiah Bartlet (played by Martin Sheen): “What’s next? What’s next? What’s next?”

President Bartlet’s anaphoric repetition of “What’s next?” is used in moments of reflection and decision-making. It emphasizes the continuous challenges and responsibilities of his role.

5. Gladiator (2000):

  • Maximus (played by Russell Crowe): “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius…”

Maximus repeats his identity and his determination for vengeance in this iconic scene, using anaphora to build intensity and convey his unwavering resolve.

6. Breaking Bad (TV series 2008-2013):

  • Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston): “I did it for me”

In this monologue, Walter White repeats “I” to confess his true motivations for his actions. The anaphora underscores his transformation and his admission of self-interest.

These examples demonstrate how anaphora can be a powerful literary device in film and TV, helping to emphasize key themes, character traits, and emotional moments.

By carefully choosing words and using repetition strategically, screenwriters can harness the power of anaphora to craft more impactful and memorable stories.

So, the next time you’re working on your screenplay, consider incorporating this rhetorical device to elevate your storytelling to new heights.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

As the most followed woman on Instagram with a staggering 429 million followers, Selena Gomez has never been much concerned with social media success.

“I’ve never really cared about that stuff,” Gomez said at Universal Music Group and Thrive Global’s Music & Health Conference on Tuesday afternoon. “I suppose I’m grateful for the platform, and I would love to continue to use it for what I’m able to do, but numbers are just numbers.”

Rather, she’s well aware of the responsibility that comes with such a far-reaching platform. In her position, Gomez has heard from several fans about how her work has helped them through extremely difficult times. “It can be a little heavy,” she continued. “I feel for people, and I think that’s what kind of keeps me in check, to be honest. I think I can be a little reckless with my emotions and having conversations with young people, women who are going through divorces or going through chemo — it’s not just about me, and I’m fully aware of that. I will just always cherish it. It’s a big responsibility, though. It’s a little scary.”

In a conversation with Universal Music Group CEO Sir Lucian Grainge and Thrive Global CEO Arianna Huffington to close out the day-long West Hollywood event, Gomez spoke on all aspects of her own mental health journey, in addition to what’s next for the Only Murders in the Building star. And while the multihyphenate makes music, stars in an acclaimed comedy series and owns her own cosmetics brand Rare Beauty, writing a book isn’t on the docket for Gomez anytime soon.

“Oh no, I don’t know,” she said. “I’m not wise enough. I don’t think I can do that. But does it mean that one day I wouldn’t be interested? I have fun things I would like to say but not right now.”

Last year, Gomez was the subject of Apple TV+ documentary My Mind and Me, which chronicled the star’s six-year journey battling autoimmune disease, mental illness and the pressures of being thrust into the limelight.

“I was very against it,” Gomez said about her initial thoughts on My Mind and Me. “There was a very long period of time where I just didn’t know if it was a good idea. I knew, eventually, one day I wanted to maybe just be an actress for a while, and I didn’t know if it would jeopardize things in my life. I don’t know what I’m doing, letting people into my life. And then the moment it was released…I had no choice at that point. And I was relieved. I felt like a huge weight was lifted.”

She added, “I felt like I got to say things that I’ve been keeping in for years. It’s very hard for me to watch. I will never watch it again, but I’m very proud of it. I couldn’t have been luckier to have the people that worked on it with me.”

The conversation also touched on the issue of AI, which continues to be a prevalent concern throughout Hollywood amid the double strike negotiations. As for Gomez’s thoughts on how it will affect the music industry, the VMA winner remains hopeful for the future. “I don’t think anybody in my field wants to feel like they need to lean on a computer in order to translate their story or what they’re trying to say,” she said. “It terrifies me, to be honest, the whole AI thing, but I don’t think you could ever replace what a human being can write… Lil Wayne said it really well, and he was basically saying that there’s no other human like who you are. And that’s all it should be.”

Coming off her newest single “Single Soon,” Gomez is expected to announce the release date of her third studio album SG3 in the near future. Next month, the former Disney Channel star’s nonprofit organization Rare Impact Fund is also hosting its first-ever benefit gala to raise money in support of mental health resources and fighting against stigma in the space.

Gomez’s sitdown followed a full day of programing at the Music and Health conference, which started with a keynote conversation between Grainge and Huffington, and Willow Bay — dean of the USC Annenberg School For Communication and Journalism and wife of Bob Iger — as the day’s emcee.

The event brought together leading experts from across the fields of music, science, health and well-being, fitness and technology, including Rick Rubin (via Zoom) in conversation with Bay and panel discussions featured prominent voices from science and medicine including Dr. Lisa Miller, Dr. Daniel Levitin, Dr. Assal Habibi, Jaron Lanier and neurosurgeon and scholar Dr. Ali Rezai. The day also featured a performance and chat with Republic Records’ artist Chelsea Cutler, along with breathing session and performance from Decca Records’ pianist and composer Chad Lawson.

Hope you like fall/winter sports! We finally got some details on Max’s plan to stream live sports. Initial reports of the add-on package being free were correct — but for a limited time only.

The Max Live Bleacher Report (B/R) Sports tier will launch in the U.S. on October 5 and it will be free — for exactly 148 days. (It would be 147 if not for the coming leap year.)

The starting point is timed to give Max subscribers two days to download and install the add-on before Major League Baseball’s National League Division Series begins October 7. The NHL’s regular season begins three days later, and the NBA returns two weeks after that.

Come March 1, 2024, the sports add-on will cost $9.99 per month — just in time for live streams of the Men’s Division I NCAA Basketball Tournament, when March the lamb turns into March the lion. Yes, it’s Madness.

Max will also live-stream U.S. Soccer events, the NHL Winter Classic, NBA’s All-Star Weekend, Turner’s popular “The Match” golf event, and “24 Hours of Le Mans” — all told, “more than 300 premium live games each year,” per Max, plus live pre- and post-game coverage, and library material. All live sports on Max will continue to air on TNT, TBS, and even truTV.

Noticeably absent from the plan is AEW, aka All Elite Wrestling, which is owned and operated by Jacksonville Jaguars owner Tony Khan. IndieWire reached out to both Warner Bros. Discovery corporate and Khan on the omission, but we did not immediately receive responses.

Not surprisingly, there was also no mention of Dana White’s controversial (read: stupid) Power Slap league. Neither of those properties are technically part of Warner Bros. Discovery Sports.

For now, the only comparable streaming products come from Apple with its Major League Soccer package (available as an Apple TV+ extension or as a standalone product) and its “Friday Night Baseball,” which offers exclusive Major League Baseball games and requires an Apple TV+ subscription.

“We’re thrilled to offer WBD’s incredible portfolio of premium U.S. live sports — featuring simulcasts of our must-see MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA and U.S. Soccer events, among others — as part of B/R Sports Add-On’s wide assortment of compelling multi-sport content on Max,” JB Perrette, CEO and president of WBD’s global streaming and games, said in a statement Tuesday. “The greatest collection of Entertainment, News and now Sports all in one place…this makes Max the most complete streaming service for consumers and reaffirms why Max is truly The One To Watch.”

Cool tagline plug, JB. The news thing Perrette is referring to is CNN Max, the latest attempt at streaming CNN that launches September 27. Here’s hoping this one works out better than CNN+. It can’t really be any worse.

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! Irena’s Vow is based on the true story of Irena Gut (aka Irene Gut Opdyke), a Polish woman conscripted to serve a Nazi officer during World War II who saved 12 Jews by hiding them in the Nazi officer’s house. If this were written as a Hollywood script, you’d never believe it, but sometimes human daring, courage, and the will to survive can exceed our imaginations.

After the Nazis invaded Poland, Irena was conscripted to work in a Nazi munitions factory. After fainting in the presence of a German officer, she was eventually ordered to work in the home of a Nazi officer. In the meantime, she had befriended many Jewish forced laborers. One day, she overhears that all Jews in the region are set to be exterminated or removed by a certain date. Left with no good options, Irena hides her Jewish friends in the basement of the very house the Nazi officer has commandeered. This plan does not come off without complications — several people eventually discover the secret, and Irena and the group have to make some difficult choices.

Irena’s story is complicated, but she told her story initially in a memoir, In My Hands. Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer, which was later adapted into a play, Irena’s Vow, by Dan Gordon. The film, directed by Louise Archambault, was also written by Gordon. The film simplifies and streamlines her story a bit, but the essential details are there.

This is an extraordinary story, from the sheer act of bravery involved. But it took much more than that — charm, guile, planning, strategy, and an incredible command of logistics.  Just imagine what it would take just to feed a dozen people in total secrecy for even a few days, much less for more than a year.  But those people also need so much more – lights, ways to entertain themselves, exercise, and something that passes for a life. Irena’s Vow is absolutely fascinating just from the perspective of hearing this astounding story.

“…Irena hides her Jewish friends in the basement of the very house the Nazi officer has commandeered.”

But in addition to the incredible source material, Irena’s Vow delivers as a movie. Sophie Nélisse, who plays Irena, is a revelation. She’s beautiful, charismatic, and completely convincing in the lead role. She has to show courage, conviction, empathy, determination, and a heartbreaking range of other emotions, which she does with wild success. On the flip side, Dougray Scott makes a convincing and suitably complex Nazi. His character does terrible things, of course, but he’s necessarily not a true believer in the cause. There is an element of humanity there, even though we can barely see it from all the overlying layers of repulsiveness.

Besides the acting, the production design, costumes, and direction all make Irena’s Vow convincing as a period piece. The only thing that subtracts a bit from the verisimilitude is the fact that all the actors are speaking English. While I’d have preferred a subtitled film for the sake of realism, I understand the desire to bring the film to the widest audience possible. The story’s importance may even demand it.

Irena herself didn’t tell her story for many decades until she was outraged by a Holocaust denier decades later. I’m grateful she did. The screenwriter Dan Gordon and director Louise Archambault deserve a lot of credit for adapting Irena’s story in an exciting and heartfelt way.

You should watch Irena’s Vow, for it is a compelling, suspenseful film involving pure good and evil — this is exactly why films exist. But long after the last image has flickered into your eye, you’ll be left with a deeper, overarching appreciation of what humans are capable of at their best. You can’t put a price on that.

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult.

What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you’ll probably need some for this game too.

I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #604 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Quordle today is below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know the answers.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It’s played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year.

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode – which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! – and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements – specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it’s difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle’s Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t blindly throw letters at it and expect to win – you’ll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That’s the case in Wordle too, of course, but it’s even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won’t want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe – but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you’re faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options – for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you’ll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It’s risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it’s the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure – you simply don’t have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Paramount+ has finally found a home in Japan. Paramount revealed Wednesday that the streaming service and its library will launch in the Japan market on Dec. 1 as a free-of-charge addition to the on-demand services of local operators J:COM and Wowow. J:COM is one of Japan’s top cable television operators and broadband internet providers, while Wowow is the longstanding leading premium pay channel in the market.

The deal marks the second launch for Paramount+ in East Asia, following a similar arrangement set up last year in South Korea with TVing, the streaming service controlled by Korean entertainment giant CJ ENM. Parmount+ also launched in Australia via a partnership just in August.

The Japan deal will give J:COM and Wowow subscribers access to Paramount+ originals like Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The Paramount+ Japan offering also will include titles from Paramount’s deep library of films and TV series: Mission: Impossible, Bumblebee, and G.I. Joe from Paramount Pictures; popular CBS TV shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and NCIS; animated favorites, such as Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and Comedy Central’s South Park; and evergreen Showtimes titles, such as Dexter and Ray Donovan; and MTV’s young-adult series and music shows, including the MTV Video Music Awards Japan.

“With the launch of Paramount+ in Japan, we are now delivering hours of popular films and series to fans in all key streaming markets worldwide. It is an important milestone for us and a critical step for the future of our streaming business,” said Marco Nobili, executive vp and international gm of Paramount+ International.

The deal is an expansion of existing relationships between Paramount Global and both J:COM and Wowow. J:COM has licensed MTV and a variety of movies and dramas from the U.S. studio for years, while Wowow, Japan’s top movie channel for over two decades, also has been a steady buyer of the studio’s titles.

Added Yoichi Iwaki, president and representative director of J:COM: “We are pleased to bring Paramount’s diverse content to the people of Japan through this new partnership. In particular, the group’s drama series like NCIS and CSI are highly acclaimed by our customers, and we will deliver attractive content, including Paramount+ original productions through J:COM Stream.”

“With this partnership, we are now able to offer a large volume of wonderful content from Paramount+, including films and international dramas, through Wowow on demand,” added Akira Tanaka, president and CEO of Wowow. “I also hope to explore further collaborations with both companies in the future and connect it to various new initiatives, using content.”

Christina Milian isn’t bothered by her lack of vocal credit on Jennifer Lopez’s “Play,” a song Milian co-wrote and originally recorded.

In an interview published Monday, the singer and actor recounted her experience penning and performing the pop tune before Lopez’s team set their sights on it. She also dispelled the idea that she might feel slighted because she was not credited as featured artist on the track, despite contributing some vocals to the final version.

“Hands down, [Lopez] killed it,” Milian told Page Six. “She’s so good. I love that song. … And I couldn’t believe at 19 years old I wrote a song for J.Lo.”

Milian told Page Six that she wrote “Play” in about 15 minutes around the same time she was working on her first single, “AM to PM,” and eponymous debut album, which came out in 2001. Though the “Resort to Love” and “Man of the House” star was proud of “Play,” she had a feeling that her record label wouldn’t want two “party songs” on the LP, and she was inclined to choose “AM to PM” instead, according to Page Six.

Before Milian made the final decision, however, a Sony music exec listened to “Play” and snagged it for Lopez, the outlet reported. But Milian was still brought on for rewrites, and her voice can be heard in the chorus.

“It’s funny when people talk about this being kind of a thing about me singing on the song with Jennifer. I mean, I have background singers on some of my songs,” Milian said.

“It’s no different than Michael Jackson having background singers on songs, or Britney Spears,” she added. “This is what music is made of. You want a blend of voices. It makes songs better, to me.”

Milian is credited as a co-writer on the track, along with Anders Bagge, Arnthor Birgisson and Cory Rooney.

“I don’t need a feature credit,” she said. “I’m also just so happy that she did it because she’s an icon, she’s amazing.”

DC’s Doom Patrol Season 4 Part 2 got an official release window to begin streaming on Max.

Doom Patrol has been an ongoing live-action series since 2019, following the superhero team from Grant Morrison’s DC Comics.

The fourth and final season was split into two parts, with the first batch of episodes dropping from December 8, 2022 to January 5, 2023.

Doom Patrol Season 4 Release Window

DC

Entertainment Weekly (EW) reported that Doom Patrol Season 4 Part 2 will debut on Max sometime this October.

This news follows actress Michelle Gomez expressing her concerns that the second part “was binned:”

“I have a sinking feeling the final installment of ‘Doom Patrol’ was binned. If this really is the case then get ready for a huge dump of my own. #bummer #we #are #doomed #sadface”

Fortunately, Gomez no longer needs to be worried following this official update. It’s rumored that the Season 4 Part 2’s premiere date will be Thursday, October 12.

How Will Doom Patrol Finish?

The Doom Patrol, featuring Robotman (Brendan Fraser and Riley Shanahan), Jane (Diane Guerrero), Rita (April Bowlby), Cyborg (Joivan Wade), and Negative Man (Matt Bomer and Matthew Zuk) are ready to finish their story.

At the end of Part 1 of Season 4, the oddball team was sent to the Orqwith, a frightening alternate dimension.

In an interview with EW, director Bosede Williams said that the Orqwith “should be dark and completely disorienting:”

“We knew that it should be dark and completely disorienting, because the characters have never seen anything like it. It should be gloomy, just to really take them out of their elements.”

The main concern for the Doom Patrol is the looming threat of Immortus, who is capable of taking away the team’s collective longevity.

Williams added that this is “a real turning point” and the end of Part 1 is something “they’re going to be struggling with:”

“They are deeply affected. It’s a real turning point for every single character. It’s a massive thing that they’re going to be struggling with, and some of them are conflicted. Some of them are okay with that and want to move on, but then others are not so sure.”

Check out how the story unfolds when Doom Patrol Season 4 Part 2 streams on Max this October.
