In a few days Kenan Thompson will host his first Primetime Emmys show, but he’s not afraid of an ‘Oscar slap’, he says.

Speaking at an Emmy preview event in LA on Wednesday night, the SNL comic reflected on the infamous physical clash between Oscars host Chris Rock and Will Smith, and on the pitfalls of ‘roasting’ at awards shows in general.

“I think a good comic is supposed to be aware,” Thompson said. “I mean I’m not calling Chris a bad comic, he just wasn’t necessarily aware of that situation, so it’s not fair to lump him into that conversation. But overall those kind of roast-y kind of people, you have to be smart, because you know, there’s a way to jab at people without offending, like for real for real. I don’t think offense necessarily gets us anywhere as a society.”

In July Smith posted an apology video online, but last weekend, during a stand-up show in London, Rock compared that recording to a “hostage video”. In Thompson’s opinion, that (literally) show-stopping moment could have potentially been quickly resolved .

“I feel like a hug moment would have stopped all of that, you know what I’m saying?” Thompson said. “But it was so unfathomable that [Rock] didn’t know that was even coming. He would have never in his wildest dreams have imagined his friend of 30-plus years would attempt some s**t like that.”

When he takes the stage at the Microsoft Theater on Monday night, for the Emmys’ first return to that venue since the pandemic, Thompson intends to make sure everybody gets—and enjoys—the joke.

“You know, I’m not going out there like hurting anybody’s feelings for the sake of other people laughing,” he said. “We’re supposed to all be laughing together, even that person the joke is about.”

“This being a roasting opportunity kind of night, a lot of people expect to hear that,” Thompson added. His approach, he says, will be “more so about the zeitgeist about what’s going on, maybe like the jokes are about the shows or the different platforms. Because it’s bigger than a famous person who’s having a moment, because it’s a room full of famous people.”

Monday’s show will see a return to the updated ‘dinner-party’ vibe of last year, only this time, executive producers Reginald “Reggie” Hudlin and Ian Stewart, who are returning for the third and fifth time respectively, said it will be on a much more expanded, immersive scale.

They also announced that John Legend would be performing his new song “Pieces” for the ‘In Memoriam’ segment.

The three-hour, live telecast will begin Monday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and will also stream on Peacock.

After a string of live-action remakes, from “Beauty and the Beast” to “The Lion King,“ the Walt Disney Co. has finally gotten around to “ Pinocchio.” Along the way, there have been some nice performances, enormous heaps of CGI and, lest anyone forget, one very blue Will Smith.

Whether any of these movies have done much to improve the originals is very much up for debate, and undertaking “Pinocchio” poses even more particular challenges. Most pressing: What you do with Pinocchio? Nice kid and all. A little wooden. But if we’re being honest here, he’s always been a bit of a dud.

Do you cast a young actor to play the puppet once brought to life? Alongside some live performers (Tom Hanks, Cynthia Erivo) and some CGI characters, director Robert Zemeckis has used computer imagery to render Pinocchio (voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) much in the style and vocal pitch of the 1940 cartoon. The effect is an awkward fusion of fake and real that strains to find any magic in between. This “Pinocchio,“ unfortunately, is no real boy, at all.

It’s also one of two adaptations of the fairy tale coming this fall. Zemeckis’ “Pinocchio” premieres Thursday on Disney+. Later comes a stop-motion version by Guillermo del Toro. The directors are magicians both, and they will surely have radically different takes on the old Italian tale. In a few months, we’ll be able to compare them, nose to nose.

Zemeckis’ film opens with a reminder of how foundational “Pinocchio” has been to the Disney myth-making machine. As the familiar castle logo plays with “When You Wish Upon a Star,“ Jiminy Cricket (voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) floats down under an umbrella to stake claim to the studio theme song. “Isn’t that a catchy little tune?” he asks.

But aside from any poignant corporate lineage, the original “Pinocchio” remains about as pure an example of Disney at its archetypal best as anything. Maurice Sendak once aptly described it as possessing “the golden glamour of a lost era; it is a monument to an age of craft and quality in America.”

Zemeckis’ film, in its ways just as representative of its cinematic era, keeps much of the 1940 film’s narrative shape but maintains little of its tension as a morality tale. Pleasure Island feels too much like where rafts of financially motivated remakes like “Pinocchio” might properly reside.

This time, the story — penned by Zemeckis and Chris Weitz — feels like it’s lurching from one set piece or song-and-dance number to another, with cameos from Erivo (in the flesh, as the Blue Fairy and “Wish Upon a Star” singer) and Keegan-Michael Key, as the voice of the deceptive red fox Honest John. Certainly, “Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee (An Actor’s Life For Me)” has a different resonance in a movie where actors compete with CGI creations for oxygen.

The best reason to see “Pinocchio” is, unsurprisingly, Hanks, who brings a soulful melancholy to Geppetto. It’s a corollary to Hanks’ performance as another European-accented performance as Presley manager Tom Parker in “Elvis.“ Only in that film, Hanks was the one pulling the strings on a big-tent star.

There are moments, still, that remind you of Zemeckis’ considerable powers. Enchantment doesn’t always feel so far away when the director has scale to play with, like when Jiminy floats gracefully down to the whale-like creature that has swallowed Pinocchio. Or when Pinocchio’s nose shoots out and Jiminy teeters on it like how Gordon-Levitt, as high-wire artist Philippe Petit, did at a higher altitude in “The Walk.”

If I’m picking a modern marionette to dance with, it’s “Annette,” Leos Carax’s 2021 wild and wonderful (and not so family friendly) musical opus with a simple, hand-crafted puppet at the center of another opera about art and parenthood. In that film, what was incongruous between the actors and the puppet was part of the film’s strange drama. It was fitfully ridiculous and emotionally devastating, and a reminder that real boy, or not, it makes no difference who are you.

“Pinocchio,” a Disney+ release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for peril/scary moments, rude material and some language. Running time: 111 minutes. Two stars out of four.

TIFF: Elegance Bratton brings his tumultuous life story as a gay Marine to the big screen, with a major assist from breakout star Jeremy Pope.

We know that Ellis French (Jeremy Pope) survives — and thrives, we hope — because Elegance Bratton survived. And, yes, thrived: turning his deeply painful, wonderfully human life story into his first narrative feature, the remarkable “The Inspection.” Bratton’s artful eye previously caught the attention of the indie documentary community, care of his rich “Pier Kids,” and he seamlessly carries over his ability to navigate complex human emotions (read: complex humans) into his own attempt at an autobiography. How lucky we are he is here to tell this story and, as ever, we can only hope to tell more.

Loosely based on Bratton’s own unexpected early aughts entry into the military, the 2005-set “The Inspection” follows young Ellis French, a young, gay, unhoused Black man struggling through life in New Jersey. Ellis has already decided his next step before we meet him, but as we enter into his orbit, he’s about to tell the most important person in his life: his mother Inez (a haunting Gabrielle Union). As Ellis will tell another character later on, he has raised himself since he was 16, presumably around the time his mother discovered he was gay and kicked him out. It’s been nearly a decade, and Inez still refuses to reconcile her love for some vague idea of “her son” with the actual young man who shows up on her doorstep, a tiny bouquet of flowers clutched in his hand.

Ellis is all hope, because he has to be. There is nothing left for him, or at least, nothing else good. As Ellis tells Inez during one of the film’s many emotionally immersive longer sequences, he’s joining the Marines. Inez hopes it will make a man out of him. She hopes he will come back heterosexual. She hopes she can love him again. Ellis, a empathetic character of the highest order — one both capable of giving and deserving of receiving empathy — is desperate to make his mother proud.

The Inspection

“The Inspection”

Framed against the backdrop of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and the War on Terror, there’s no question how Ellis’ entry into boot camp will go, but the great trick of Bratton’s “The Inspection” is the repeated ways he finds to invert what we think we know about Ellis, about military life, about how men bond, and about how deep tenderness can be found even in the midst of profound trauma and brutality. Ellis’ fellow recruits run the gamut, from the legacy squad leader Harvey (McCaul Lombardi) to conflicted Castro (Aaron Dominguez) and the similarly shunned Ismail (Eman Esfandi). Their drill instructor? No less than Bookem Woodbine, giving texture to a very traditional take on the trope (he’s a jerk!).

But mostly, there is Rosales (a stirring Raúl Castillo), an assistant instructor who Ellis fixates on immediately and earnestly. Bratton moves between rough-and-ready training sequences and lusty fantasy diversions — all of them reorienting the many men Ellis forced to live and work around — all of them evocatively lensed by cinematographer Lachlan Milne. Color saturations help tip off different variations of Ellis’ experiences, warm reds for the erotic stuff, flat greens and grays for drab military exercises. That they all feel of the same piece and the same story, even when Bratton makes literal jumps from scene to scene, speak to his persistence of vision. (Music by Animal Collective further binds the big swings, particularly in turning seemingly expected training montages into gritty, grinding performances that take on a truly fresh cast.)

How difficult it must be to choose the person who will star as your avatar in your most personal story, and how blessed Bratton must have felt when he picked Jeremy Pope (already nominated for an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony for his varied career). Pope’s giant eyes catch the light even in dark moments; you can’t look away from them. “The Inspection” is Ellis’ story, and Pope carries the character with such depth and such ease that there seem to be no lines between performer and character. Pope is also naturally charming in a way can be deployed for moments of great amusement, and as dark as “The Inspection” might sound, Bratton’s surprising sense of humor finds an easy home in Pope’s work.

That’s part of the appeal of the film, which manages to be both intensely personal and widely enjoyable, engendering empathy at every turn, but never falling into cheap machinations or callow drama just for the hell of it. This is a human story, as messy and complex and maddening as any ever told, and while Bratton makes it his own (how could he not?), the generosity with which he shares it with us make it special indeed.

Grade: B+

“The Inspection” premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. A24 releases it in theaters on Friday, November 18.

CHERYL LADD – Since her big break as one of the beloved “Charlie’s Angels,” Cheryl Ladd has enjoyed a career that has traversed television, film, Broadway and beyond. Cheryl currently stars in “A Cowgirl’s Song,” a new movie from Samuel Goldwyn Films. Cheryl was seen in the Lifetime Christmas movie “Christmas Unwrapped” as part of their It’s A Wonderful Lifetime event. She also guest starred on HBO’s “Ballers” and Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” where she played a fouled mouth version of Vanna White. Next, she starred in FX’s “American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson” playing Linell Shapiro, the wife of Simpson’s defense attorney Robert Shapiro portrayed by John Travolta.

Ladd has also starred in the Hallmark Channel movie “Garage Sale Mysteries: The Wedding Dress” and the faith-based film “The Perfect Wave,” opposite Scott Eastwood. Her other credits include Ladd singing and dancing as ‘Mrs. Claus’ in the Disney musical “The Search For Santa Paws: Santa Pups 2,” as well as starring as an unhinged love interest to medical examiner ‘Ducky’ (David McCallum) on television’s #1 rated drama, “NCIS.” Ladd starred in the Warner Bros. feature film “Unforgettable” opposite Katherine Heigl, and in the indie feature “Camera Store” opposite John Larroquette and John Rhys-Davies.

Moving effortlessly between mediums has always been second nature for Ladd, and the seasoned performer demonstrated such versatility when she starred as ‘Annie Oakley’ in “Annie Get Your Gun!” on Broadway, realizing a lifelong dream.

JASON LEWIS – Jason Lewis has been entertaining audiences on stage and screen for over 20 years. He is recognized globally for his iconic role as Smith Jerrod, Samantha’s (Kim Cattrall) lovable, kind boyfriend on HBO’s groundbreaking comedy series “Sex and the City.” He reprised his role in both feature films, “Sex and the City” and “Sex and the City 2,” directed by Michael Patrick King. Since his breakout role, Lewis has successfully parlayed his stardom into a series of quality film and television roles. Most recently, he starred for two seasons on NBC’s supernatural drama series “Midnight, Texas.” Some of his television work includes recurring and guest star roles on ABC’s family drama series “Brothers & Sisters,” “House M.D.,” “Animal Kingdom,” “The Evidence,” “Six Degrees,” “CSI,” “CSI: Miami,” “How I Met Your Mother” and “Charmed.” In 2018, Lewis starred in the independent features “Half Magic” with Heather Graham and Angela Kinsey, and the western “Running Wild with Sharon Stone.” Other feature work includes psychological thriller “Mr. Brooks,” “The Jacket,” “The Death and Life of Bobby Z,” ”The Attic” and “The Pardon.” He also starred as the lead in Kenneth Lonergan’s world-renowned stage play “This Is Our Youth” for director Woody Harrelson. Lewis was born and raised in Southern California, and his first major break in entertainment was in fashion as a model. He quickly became one of the top male models and modeled in campaigns and on runways worldwide for some of the most luxurious houses, including Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors and GUESS. In addition to acting, he is a passionate philanthropist and has supported many charities over the years. Currently, he is very active with nonprofit organization Best Buddies and has also previously worked with Habitat for Humanity.

SHANGELA – Currently the star of “We’re Here” on HBO (which just got picked up for a third season), Shangela is perhaps best known as one of the All Stars from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” She was the first person to walk the carpet in drag at the Oscars for her supporting role in “A Star Is Born” and was recently ranked second on Vulture’s list of “America’s Most Powerful Drag Queens.” Other recent acting credits include shows such as “Lovecraft Country,” “Station 19,” “Katy Keene,” “2 Broke Girls,” etc.

JORDIN SPARKS – Jordin Sparks is a GRAMMY-nominated, multiplatinum singer/songwriter and actress who won season six of “American Idol” during one of the show’s highest-rated seasons. She garnered worldwide attention as the youngest winner, just 17 years old.

Her self-titled debut went platinum, selling over 2 million copies worldwide. The first three singles of “Jordin Sparks” went top five, and the album’s second single, “No Air,” sold four million digital downloads. “No Air” has the distinction of being the third highest-selling single by any “American Idol” contestant and is listed No. 27 in Billboard’s Top 40 Biggest Duets of All Time. Sparks’ second release, “Battlefield,” debuted on the Billboard Album chart at No. 7. Cumulatively, Sparks’ popular singles have sold over 10 million digital tracks in the U.S.

Today, when she is not hard at work on her next album (slated for release this year), she enjoys spending time with her family, husband Dana Isaiah and their son, DJ.

GABBY WINDEY – Gabby Windey is an American television personality who most recently appeared on ABC’s “The Bachelorette” alongside Rachel Recchia as one-half of the series’ first-ever co-lead season! Prior to that, she appeared on season 26 of ABC’s “The Bachelor.” Windey is much more than meets the eye. Not only is she beautiful, but she also has a quick wit, substance, emotional depth and a wealth of lived experiences. Windey worked throughout the pandemic as an ICU nurse at the University of Colorado Hospital, and before that she was a cheerleader for the Denver Broncos. She currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with her beloved goldendoodle, Leonardo.

The last decade has seen a plethora of movies about the crisis in Syria, most of them hard-hitting documentaries tracking the brutal effects of the war and the plight of those who’ve left and those who’ve stayed. At the same time, there’s never been a shortage of inspirational sports films where plucky athletes overcome obstacles to realize their dreams.

But “The Swimmers,” which opened the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, is a rare mixture of the two: It’s an inspirational sports movie about a pair of Syrian swimmers, sisters Yusra and Sara Mardini, who fled from their home in Damascus during the Syrian civil war in 2015 to Europe, where they might have a chance to advance their athletic careers and swim in the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

TIFF has opened with sports movies in the past, though you might be forgiven for forgetting about the festival’s 2010 opener, “Score: A Hockey Musical,” or 2017’s “Borg/McEnroe,” with Shia LaBeouf perhaps typecast as the petulant John McEnroe.

At any rate, “The Swimmers” is more substantial than either of those films. Directed by Welsh/Egyptian filmmaker Sally El Hosaini (“My Brother the Devil”) and starring real-life sisters Nathalie and Manal Issa, the Netflix film contains more ecstatic, celebratory montages than you’ll ever see in a movie about war and displacement, while at the same time packing more horrors into its two hours than a barrel of sports movies.

It makes for an awkward fit at times, and El Houdini lays the melodrama on thicker than the nuance, but there’s no denying that the story packs a punch.

A few other recent films have mixed politics and sports, including last year’s Czech Oscar entry, “Zatopek,” but the contrasts are even more marked in “The Swimmers.” That’s clearly the way the movie is designed, with the early scenes of Yusra and Sara painting their life in Damascus as a whirl of intense swim training with their father, but also intense partying. That day-glo festivity remains even when the timeline flashes forward four years and bombs begin dropping in the distance, while the Mardini sisters dance the night away.

Tiara, the more cautious of the two and the more accomplished swimmer, is somewhat worried; Sara would prefer not to think about it. But eventually, the civil war reaches them when a bomb drops in a pool during one of Yusra’s races, and the family has to consider sending the girls to Germany, where they might have a chance to continue their swimming.

Accompanied by their cousin (Ahmed Malek), they head to Turkey as tourists, though even the flight attendants on the plane know what’s really happening: An in-flight announcement reminds the passengers that the life jackets are the property of the airline, and those who attempt to take them will be prosecuted.

The center stretch of “The Swimmers” could be a movie of its own. The sisters endure a nightmarish trip across the sea with 18 refugees in a leaky rubber boat designed for a third that many, followed by a trek across Europe involving long walks and a succession of smugglers, each one more devious than the last.

The scenes at sea are particularly harrowing, making up an unbroken stretch that alternates between fast, jarring cuts inside the boat and periodic calmer overhead shots to show the tiny craft lost in a vast sea. It’s not easy to follow what’s going on, but that’s part of the point: All is chaos, even after Yusra and Sara jump overboard to lighten the load and help get the boat to the island of Lesbos.

After that stretch, it’s jarring when the movie returns to more typical training montages and repeated scenes of momentary bliss and celebration along the way. The filmmaking tends to overplay everything, so the ecstatic moments are so heightened that it’s hard to reconcile them with the voyage we’ve just seen. (To say the least, a joyous pillow fight during the journey seems a bit incongruous.)

But the juxtaposition of jubilance and misery is the film’s modus operandi, however jarring it may seem. And by the end, Sara gives a rousing speech that ties together the horror and the happiness, and Yusra rises to the occasion. It’s corny as hell, but also undeniably effective. You can’t keep a good inspirational sports movie down, even when it’s carrying the baggage this one is.

Raymond Lee

Look: There are a lot of things, probably, that Peacock’s upcoming reboot of classic time travel TV series Quantum Leap has to offer. The basic premise, lifted from the original series—scientist jumps into the bodies of people throughout time with hologram pal, setting right what once went wrong—remains basically unimpeachable as a way to get a whole new “kind” of show pretty much every week. And new series star Raymond Lee has that “baffled but charming everyman” quality that such a series demands. But, hey, Peacock: Are you really going to bust out a trailer for a Quantum Leap revival project and not give us a hit of that classic theme song? What the fuck?

Quantum Leap: Official Trailer | NBC’s Quantum Leap

Penned by Mike Post—whose ubiquitous TV composing work encompasses some of the best television soundtracking of a generation, including Magnum, P.I., The Rockford Files, and the “dun-dun” sound from Law & Order—the Quantum Leap theme was the perfect introduction for a show that blended high-concept sci-fi with the classic beats of an old-school adventure series. We’re not saying the new show has to use the song in its entirety. We’re not totally beholden to our nostalgia for a TV show, even one that sort-of, kind-of defined our childhoods completely. But a few licks couldn’t have killed them, right?

Quantum Leap – Original Show Intro | NBC Classics

Anyway.

If we’re being honest, the reboot looks a little on the streaming-TV-budget side; some of those effects shots in the trailer are definitely a bit dubious, which we might just have to accept as the price of doing business. The basic idea is solid, though, including the reveal that Dr. Benjamin Seong’s holographic helper Addison (Caitlin Bassett) is also a former romantic partner he no longer remembers because of the whole “Swiss-cheesed memory” thing. And the setups for various leaps seem solid enough: Getaway driver, rock star, boxer, astronaut, all good “How’s he gonna get out of this one?” opportunities. (We’re just going to accept that Dr. Seong apparently says “Oh shit” instead of the series’ classic “Oh boy”; like we said, we’re not the ones trapped in the past!) Ultimately, the show is going to live or die on Lee; fingers crossed that he can find his proper place in time.

San Francisco’s Chinatown appears safe on the surface, but like Vancouver, the northern California city saw an explosion of anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But south of the border, grassroots groups fought back against a series of cowardly attacks that forced seniors to stay home – and their efforts empowered Asian Americans to stand up for their community.

By day, Ebert Kan deals in automotive parts.

After hours two days a week, he shifts to defending San Francisco’s Chinatown as the president of the United Peace Collaborative (UPC).

“Chinatown for me, you know, has a special place in my heart,” Kan told Global News.

“I grew up here and a lot of my friends and family grew up here.”

Kan was moved to act after an elderly man was violently pushed to the ground in a daylight attack in January, 2021.

“That kind of set me off,” Kan said.

San Francisco police statistics show a 567 per cent spike in hate crimes reported against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders during the pandemic – from nine victims in 2020 to 60 in 2021.

The UPC was founded in March 2020 by Leanna Louie, who together with her partner Robert Lowe, started conducting safety patrols in San Francisco’s Chinatown in response to the rise in anti-AAPI hate crimes.

More than two years later, UPC volunteers continue to patrol the area seven days a week to ensure the safety of elders, women and children.

“In the year and seven months that I’ve been doing this now, all the attacks have stopped in Chinatown,” Kan said.

“They haven’t stopped completely but they’ve stopped in Chinatown in general.”

The UPC’s mission to take back the streets also expanded to keeping Chinatown clean from graffiti with volunteers removing tags from roll-up doors and rooftops.

“Chinatown will not survive unless we can ensure that this is a place that’s safe,” Lily Ho said.

Ho formed the Delta Chinatown Initiative to help combat the rise in hate crimes, deter crime and support police in holding criminals accountable.

The non-profit organization organized rallies and town halls against anti-Asian hate, and also secured funding to install surveillance cameras in laneways and along Grant Avenue, with little pushback from privacy groups.

“This is our community,” Ho told Global News.

“I mean it’s not something that I feel comfortable not doing something about.”

Small businesses were already struggling economically when COVID-19 hit, leading to shuttered storefronts and an increase in crime, vandalism and violent attacks.

“As Chinese here, we get the blame because people think the virus is from China,” Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory owner Kevin Chan said.

“It was unnerving to come down to Chinatown during that time when everything was locked down,” Lieut. Douglas Farmer of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) said.

Farmer is the acting captain of Central Police Station, which includes Chinatown, where he was the daywatch lieutenant at the height of the pandemic.

“It was a tough time, but we know at Central Station that Chinatown’s tough,” Farmer said.

The SFPD added dedicated foot patrols to every watch to help businesses battle back.

“The secret: struggle, every time like we’re trying to fight for our life,” said Edward Siu with the Chinatown Merchants United Association.

Siu, who also runs the travel company Classics Tour, said merchants launched a WeChat group to share suspect photos and help prevent crime.

“They see something real suspicious or some crime is going, or will be going on, and then we’ll put up the chat on it and then we’ll send it to police,” Siu said.

“The officers really take it to heart and take it personally when they see something bad happen,” Farmer said.

“I feel like the entire community does feel very protective of this space,” Ho added.

But even with a visible police presence and the community invested in change, Ho said anti-Asian hate hasn’t disappeared.

“Unfortunately, it’s still an issue,” he said.

Both Ho and Kan are not giving up the fight.

“Somebody asked me how long I plan on doing this and I [said] when all the violence stops,” Kan said.

“So realistically I’m probably going to do this the rest of my life.”

“The Handmaid’s Tale” has been renewed for a sixth and final season ahead of its Season 5 premiere on Hulu.

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, the Elisabeth Moss-led “The Handmaid’s Tale” will debut its fifth and penultimate season with a two-part premiere Sept. 14.

In the fifth season, “June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose,” per Hulu. “The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Nick and Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.”

Racking up 15 Emmy awards, including the honor for top drama in 2017, “The Handmaid’s Tale” TV series is created by Bruce Miller, who is actively developing “The Testaments,” a follow-up to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which picks up years later, for Hulu.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 5 stars Elisabeth Moss, Bradley Whitford, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel and Sam Jaeger.

The series is executive produced by Miller, Warren Littlefield, Moss, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Eric Tuchman, Yahlin Chang, Rachel Shukert, Sheila Hockin, John Weber, Frank Siracusa, Steve Stark and Kim Todd.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is produced and internationally distributed by MGM Television.

“It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’” “The Handmaid’s Tale” creator, showrunner and executive producer Miller said in a statement Thursday, when the news was revealed out of TIFF. “We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point.”

Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, added: “Five years ago, almost to the day, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ made history when it became the first show to win an Emmy for a streaming service. In the time since, it has been a privilege and pleasure to work with some of the finest creative talent in our industry on this show – a distinct and exceptional group of people who continue to produce the highest quality television that has made and continues to make significant cultural impact. Bruce, Warren, Lizzie and the entire team at MGM have been amazing partners, and we hope fans enjoy these last two seasons.”

Home security brand Ring is expanding end-to-end encryption (also known as E2EE) support to more devices while also introducing a new data transfer feature. It’s a welcome security update, but it also forces the deactivation of some useful Ring features.

Previously, E2EE was only available to wired products like the Ring Video Doorbell Pro and Floodlight Cam. Now that support is migrating over to Ring’s wireless cameras and doorbells. However, it’s unknown if everything in the lineup will get it. Nowhere in the announcement does it say whether or not all wireless devices will have the E2EE support; although there are reports (opens in new tab) stating the support is indeed universal. We reached out to the company to see if it could clear up this confusion. This story will be updated if we hear back.

As for the new data transfer tool, it’s called Deactivated Device State. It allows users to save past recordings from an old Ring device to their account. This way, you don’t have to manually download every single video one by one. Users must stay a Ring subscriber to use this tool, however. Otherwise, they’ll have to download everything to their local computer before the company deletes the videos.

Instructions on how to save recordings and deactivate devices can be found on Ring’s website (opens in new tab). It’ll involve updating the Ring mobile app and going into a device’s personal settings to keep events.

End-to-end encryption

Either way, if you do have a wireless Ring camera or doorbell, we recommend updating the mobile app to see if the E2EE is available. The company has a set of instructions (opens in new tab) on its website that detail how to set up end-to-end encryption. Similar to Deactivated Device State, you’ll have to update the app and go into the Control Center. From there, activate E2EE, create a passphrase, and then add whichever devices you want.

It’s worth enabling E2EE is because, somewhat obviously, it improves Ring Device security. Videos recorded on Ring cameras are uploaded to the company’s cloud storage which, as it turns out, isn’t the most secure. The company has a history of security problems from 1,500 passwords leaking onto the dark web to possibly giving hackers a way to steal Wi-Fi from houses.

With end-to-end encryption, your recordings have their data protected and unreadable. No one – not Ring, Amazon, hackers, or even the government – can view your encrypted videos. All they’ll get is a jumbled mess of data. Only the Ring user and their connected device can view recorded videos.

That said, there’s a catch to having this level of security. End-to-end encryption on Ring devices actually disables many features including Bird’s Eye View, Virtual Security Guard, Event Timeline, and Alexa Greetings just to name a few. The full list of disabled features (opens in new tab) can be found on the company website. Users will essentially have to ask themselves whether the better security is worth the loss of convenience.

Given Ring’s history, it may be better to opt for security.

Room for improvement

Expanded E2EE support and the new data transfer feature are great and all, but Ring still has room for improvement. Cybersecurity research firm Checkmarx recently discovered a vulnerability within the Ring Android app that could allow “threat actors to steal identity data including geolocation and camera recordings.” On top of that, it might be possible for someone to upload malware to an Android phone via this vulnerability and steal even more sensitive data, including addresses.

And what’s scary is that theRing  Android app has more than 10 million downloads. Now that end-to-end encryption is available to most of RIng’s offerings, perhaps it’s time for the company to patch the holes in its own security and stop the constant leaks.

Can you feel the thunder?

“Thor: Love and Thunder,” the fourth standalone movie centered around Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the increasingly self-aware Norse God of Thunder, is finally upon us.

This time Thor, after paling around with the Guardians of the Galaxy (including Chris Pratt’s Star Lord), goes on a quest to find himself. This quest turns out to be way more literal than Thor would have probably imagined, when he runs into someone with his powers, using his old hammer Mjölnir. What’s more, this new Thor is none other than his ex-flame Jane Foster (Natalie Portman, returning to the franchise for the first time since “Thor: The Dark World”). Awkward! Together, the two Thors (along with Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie) go on a cosmic quest to defeat Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). It’s another classic Thor adventure!

This being a Marvel movie, we know you’re ready to stick around for some “Thor: Love and Thunder” credits scenes. But how many are there exactly?

Consider this your spoiler-free heads up.

Does “Thor: Love and Thunder” have credits scenes?

Is the Marvel Cinematic Universe a vast, interconnected network of feature films and streaming series that tell one epic, ongoing saga? (The answer is yes.) The first post-credits scene started as a lark, with Samuel L. Jackson showing up after “Iron Man” (2008) was over. Since then, it has become one of the most reliable – and most fun – aspects of these Kevin Feige-produced films.

So yes, of course, “Thor: Love and Thunder” has credits scenes.

How many credit scenes does “Thor: Love and Thunder” have?

It has two. This is par for the course with most Marvel Studios movies, although occasionally there are more (“Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” had five, which was fitting for its more-is-more aesthetic) or less (some of the Disney+ shows only have one). The first scene happens after the extremely metal, extremely ‘80s main-on-end credits sequence and the second scene happens after everybody has been properly thanked, at the very end of the credits.

Do you need to stick around for both?

Let’s be honest, some of these credits scenes are puzzling or unnecessary or both. With “Thor: Love and Thunder,” it is probably wise to stick around for both. Both are sweet and funny and surprising, just like the rest of “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Neither of them are as wonderfully silly as Pizza Poppa or Captain America’s lesson about patience.

Do you have time to run to the bathroom after the mid-credits scene but before the post-credits scene?

Yes. A ton of people worked on “Thor: Love and Thunder.” You have plenty of wiggle room when it comes to getting to the bathroom and making it back in time for the second scene. Just don’t step out to get a beer or use the bathroom at the place next door. Stay in the building and you should be okay.

Do the scenes contribute in meaningful ways to the ongoing mythology of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Yes. Probably. Listen, we’re not entirely sure but they both have a certain weight to them that could impact future Marvel Studios features or streaming series. One of them, like “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” introduces a new character to the MCU and the other one is a very sweet grace note to end the movie on. Both could impact the status quo in different ways. But who’s to say!

Are either of the scenes better than the karaoke post-credits scene from “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings?”

No.

“Abbott Elementary” just might do it. After winning for casting, the ABC hit freshman sitcom could make history in many significant ways. After Quinta Brunson made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for comedy series, acting and writing categories in the same year, she would be only the second Black person ever to win as a producer in the comedy series. The first was Winifred Hervey for “The Golden Girls” back in 1987. Also, forecast to go along with the top category a win for writing (Brunson would be the third Black person after Larry Wilmore for “The Bernie Mac Show” in 2002 and Lena Waithe for “Master of None” in 2017) and Sheryl Lee Ralph in supporting actress (she would be the second Black woman to win the category after Jackee Harry for “227” in 1987).

Let’s be clear, I’m aware I may be “overthinking much of this, and there are more “safe picks” to make as we barrel towards the ceremony. “Ted Lasso” winning comedy would not be shocking, along with its three stars Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham, matching once again.

The race for drama series remains as open as ever with “Squid Game” asserting itself with four huge wins including guest actress drama for Lee You-mi.  With 25 nominations, HBO’s “Succession” leads overall but so far, it’s only walked away with one Creative Art category for casting (which is no small feat). The casting and drama series categories have matched the last six of the last 10 years, including the last four consecutively.

However, after much internal debate, Netflix might just squeak it out and make history as the first non-English program to win the category. The show is predicted to also win directing for Hwang Dong-hyuk, who would be the first Asian winner ever.

It might be foolish to not predict Lee Jung-jae, but the momentum for AMC’s “Better Call Saul” really picked up during the voting window. Feeling like a packaged deal, Rhea Seehorn is also projected to win in supporting actress over SAG winner Jung Ho-yeon.

HBO’s “Euphoria” does currently lead the tally with Creative Arts wins, alongside Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and its HBO counterpart “The White Lotus.” Even though Zendaya would be the youngest producer ever to win, it seems too high of an obstacle to getting over. While she’s the favorite in lead actress drama, we felt a surge of support for Melanie Lynskey from Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” which is the best way to reward the show.

“The White Lotus” feels just fine to walk away with a multitude of awards including limited or anthology series, directing and writing. Hulu’s “Dopesick” and “The Dropout” may just have to make do with wins for Michael Keaton and Amanda Seyfried.

Other potential surprises include HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” besting NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in variety sketch series and Amazon Prime Video’s “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” getting past VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for competition program.

“Abbott Elementary” just might do it. After

The entire cast may have only been at the film festival for a few days in total but pretty much everything they did made headlines.

But despite all the internet rumors, Olivia says she’s not letting anything get to her — or affect how she feels about the movie.

“No amount of internet bullying can cause me to question my belief in a movie made collectively by so many brilliant people,” Olivia said in a statement to Vanity Fair after the premiere.

She continued, “We worked too hard, and went through too much together, to be derailed by something that really has nothing to do with filmmaking.”

“Florence’s performance in this film is astounding,” Olivia said. “It’s just baffling to me that the media would rather focus on baseless rumors and gossip, thereby overshadowing her profound talent.”

She continued, “She deserves more than that. As does the movie, and everyone who worked so hard on it.”

Florence has still not spoken out about the drama — but she reportedly won’t be attending the film’s premiere in New York.

You can read all that Olivia had to say here.

Labor Day weekend will be memorable for more reasons than just Monday being a day off work.

This Saturday, September 3rd, more than 3,000 theaters across the United States will offer movie tickets at $3. Yes- $3 movie tickets.

It is a discount day in theaters nationwide including AMC, Cinemark, Regal Cinemas, and more.  In participating theaters, tickets will be no more than $3 for every show and every format.

The newly launched “National Cinema Day” was created by The Cinema Foundation, a non-profit organization of the National Association of Theater Owners. Its president, Jackie Brenneman, said in a statement, “after this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing. We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’  to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.”

Because movie theaters were forced to shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is said to be an initiative to start bringing more moviegoers back into theaters. With the showings on Saturday, moviegoers will get a sneak peek of upcoming movies from Disney, Sony, Universal, Amazon Studios, Paramount, Warner Bros, and more.

Movies that will be showing in theaters nationwide this Saturday include:Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Invitation, Beast, Bullet Train, Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul., Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and Top Gun: Maverick.

If it is a success, The Cinema Foundation hopes to repeat the celebration in the Fall and make it an annual event. Not only will tickets be discounted but certain movie theater chains are also offering discounts on food and snacks. AMC just announced that it is offering a popcorn and drink combo for $5. Cinemark is offering $3 small popcorn, $3 medium fountain drinks & ICEEs, and $3 any-size candy.

So if you want $3 movies to last, this weekend is the perfect time to go to the movies! What movie will you watch? Check out all the movie theaters that are participating here.

A painting that would’ve been a lot cooler if it featured a winged demon-thing instead.

The Conjuring movies are pretty good, pretty scary demon-centric horror films. As a side effect of being pretty good, pretty scary demon-centric horror films that star ghost-hunting Christian hucksters, they’re also movies that serve a secondary function as nightmare advertisements for the power of Christ to defeat even the scariest ghouls and ghosts.

In light of this, it isn’t surprising that one of the series’ breakout specters is a spooky nun, who first appeared in the second Conjuring to terrify lapsed Catholics with memories of being yelled at by habit-wearing spinsters before she embarked on a solo career with her very own spin-off movie.

As The Conjuring 2 director James Wan explains in a recent Instagram post, this scary nun almost didn’t appear in the movie. She was, in fact, originally meant to be portrayed in the much cooler form of a towering, horned devil man that Wan’s shown off on his Instagram and described as “the best demon I never used.”

A video from the post sees the movie’s composer, Joseph Bishara, standing on set in a wrinkly black bodysuit with taloned gloves as a sweet demon head is set down on his shoulders. The clip then shows off the monster’s animatronics in action, its bloody mouth working aimlessly and its yellow eyes squinting open and closed as if it’s trying its best to read aloud from a particularly difficult section of a (presumably evil) book.

Wan writes that “this winged demon” featured “a beautifully/hideously sculpted animatronic puppet head and practical body-suit” designed by collaborator Justin Raleigh and the team at Fractured FX Inc. Its wings would have been created through CGI, though Wan says that he thinks he has “only one fully finished shot with CGI wings in place.”

“It was really grand and epic,” Wan continues. “But as cool as it was, it felt out of place within the Conjuring world we had built.”

While The Conjuring 2 was in post-production, Wan “reconceived the villain” in order to make the demon Valak into something “more grounded, more personal, and creepier.” The evil nun design was then created and used in the movie instead of the original concept. “New scare set-pieces like the ‘painting on the wall’” were also added to the movie to take advantage of the redesign.

That’s all well and good, but we still believe that the bloody-mouthed demon guy gets his due. If The Nun 2 and other spin-offs get to exist, surely Wan and Co. can make room for a movie starring this big ol’ freak.

Queen Elizabeth II, who held the British throne since 1952 and was the country’s longest-reigning monarch, has died. She was 96.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” reads a tweet from the official Royal Family account posted on Thursday afternoon. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Shortly thereafter, Buckingham Palace issued the following statement on behalf of King Charles:

The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.

The news comes just hours after Elizabeth’s health grew concerning on Thursday morning, at which point she had been placed under medical supervision by her doctors.

Elizabeth took the throne in February 1952, succeeding her father, King George VI, immediately after he passed away. During her multi-decade reign, she completed thousands of public engagements and was a patron of hundreds of charities and organizations. Despite her considerable time in the public eye, though, the queen rarely gave interviews and was typically private about her own convictions. In October 2021, following a brief hospital stay (and, later, a sprained back), Elizabeth began to carry out fewer in-person visits and events; her public appearances became even less frequent after she contracted COVID in February of this year.

On Feb. 6, the queen celebrated 70 years on the throne, making her the first British monarch to reach a Platinum Jubilee; celebratory events have been held in her honor throughout the year, which culminated with a four-day holiday weekend in the U.K. from June 2 to June 5. Prior to that, in 2017, she was the first British monarch to observe a Sapphire Jubilee, marking a 65-year reign. In 2015, she officially became the longest-reigning British monarch, surpassing Queen Victoria.

Elizabeth experienced her share of turbulence throughout the years. Most recently and notably, the British royal family received backlash for its alleged treatment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, details of which came out during the couple’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. Two days after the Q&A aired, a statement from Buckingham Palace was made on the queen’s behalf, reading, “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”

During her time in power, Elizabeth was portrayed often in pop culture. On Netflix’s The Crown, she’s thus far been played by Claire Foy (Seasons 1 and 2) and Olivia Colman (Seasons 3 and 4), both of whom won Primetime Emmys for their work; Imelda Staunton will take over for the final two seasons. Helen Mirren also took home an Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth in 2006’s The Queen, which chronicled the royal family’s public and private responses to Princess Diana’s untimely death.

Elizabeth is survived by her four children — Charles, Prince of Wales; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex; and Anne, Princess Royal — and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Prince Philip, her husband of 73 years, passed away at age 99 in 2021.

Call her “17”! Jennifer Hudson is opening up about becoming the 17th person in history to earn EGOT status after the musical A Strange Loop, on which she’s a producer, won a Tony for best musical earlier this summer.

“I’m still processing it. To be able to know fully what that means, the company that that is… It came as a surprise,” Hudson told Gayle King on CBS This Morning. “I did not fully see it coming.”

Hudson — who earned an Oscar for her role in Dreamgirls, two Grammys (one for her self-titled album), an Emmy for Baba Yaga, and now the Tony for A Strange Loop — shared she was shocked when people started to chant “EGOT” as she took the stage with the cast of the musical back in June.

“I went there to celebrate the cast for getting 11 nominations, and I don’t feel like I’ve been present. And then when they said, ‘Strange Loop, best musical,’ I was cheering for them,” Hudson said. “And once we get on the stage, everybody started chanting, ‘EGOT, EGOT,’ and I was like, ‘Wait, what?’”

“It blows me away… I always have a keepsake just as I have this,” she added, pointing to a ring she has with the letters EGO. “So now I have a charm that says 17. When you see 17, that’s what it means.”

Hudson added that she won’t change her EGO ring “since it’s held me down for a while,” but added that she’ll get an EGOT ring to commemorate the accomplishment. Of the 17 people with EGOT status, Hudson is the youngest woman.

Hudson follows in the footsteps of composer Alan Menken, lyricist Tim Rice, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and John Legend, who’ve recently earned their EGOT status. Whoopi Goldberg was the first Black EGOT winner when she earned the title in 2009.

Hudson shared a selfie with her trophies ahead of her 41st birthday. “Counting down til my birthday ! In a few days I will be 41 but then again I will always be 17! #EGOT #17,” she wrote.

King’s full interview with Hudson for CBS This Morning airs on Friday.

Francesco Zippel’s Sergio Leone doc, which premieres on Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival, is the first portrait of the Italian master made with full support of his children Raffaella and Andrea.

Titled “Sergio Leone: The Man Who Invented America,” the high-profile doc is premiering in the Venice Classics section for docs on cinema. It features an impressive list of voices holding forth on what makes Leone special for them. Among these are: Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Giuseppe Tornatore, Frank Miller, Darren Aronofsky, Damien Chazelle and Robert De Niro (see clip).

But aside from Leone’s visionary talent as a director what emerges is that as his career escalated from the so-called “Dollars Trilogy” to “Once Upon a Time in the West” through to his final masterpiece, “Once Upon a Time in America,” Leone’s life was steeped in two inextricably linked passions: film and family.

“This documentary is basically centered around his legacy. The central question is: why is Sergio Leone still a major reference for world cinema, even among young directors?,” says Raffaella Leone.

“I think it’s important to understand why this legacy is having such a long life, even though he did not make many films,” she adds.

At the same time the doc stems from a desire to hone in “not just on what movies he made and why, but also on him as a person,” Leone’s daughter goes on to underline.

Basically what emerges is that he was a visionary director. “A bold man in the way he made movies that contrary to what part of the press wrote at the time when they were released, were difficult and complex.”

“They weren’t commercial movies; they had a lot of thought behind them,” Raffaella Leone points out. “The intricacies of his films emerge in the doc. More broadly, it encompasses his rapport with cinema, with his family, with his parents, and with his children. What surfaces is the type of person he was, more than in other docs that have been made about him,” she says.

“Sergio Leone: The Man Who Invented America” is produced by Sky Studios and Sky Italia in collaboration with Leone Film Group. NBCUniversal Global Distribution is selling international outside of Sky territories. Italy’s 01 Distribution will be releasing the doc in Italian cinemas on Oct. 20.

“What emerges is a sophisticated and cultured man,” says Sky Italia senior exec Roberto Pisoni. “And also this idea of a fantastic romanticized America. He fell in love with the American fable and told it through his films and his imagination.”

EXCLUSIVE: Canadian filmmaker Chandler Levack has signed with WME.

Levack’s video store dramedy I Like Movies, which is the first film she has written and directed, will debut as part of the Discovery program at TIFF 2022. Visit Films is handling sales.

The movie follows socially inept 17-year old cinephile, Lawrence Kweller, who gets a job at a video store where he forms a complicated friendship with his older female manager.

According to Levack, the feature is a “demented love letter” to her adolescence in Burlington, Ontario, where she fell in love with cinema while working as a part-time clerk at Blockbuster Video from 2002 to 2004 during her last two years of high school.

Levack has directed multiple music videos, earning two Juno nominations, and is a journalist and critic for publications including The Globe & Mail, Maisonneuve and SPIN Magazine. Her 2017 short film We Forgot to Break Up premiered at TIFF and SXSW.

She said: “I literally wrote I Like Movies in an A&W across the street from my house and it is the product of so many people’s hard work, commitment and creativity for many years. To have WME‘s support and belief in me as an emerging artist is beyond my wildest imagination. My 16-year-old self is losing her shit.”

Levack grew up in Burlington, Ontario, and lives in Toronto where she studied cinema at the University of Toronto and screenwriting at the Canadian Film Centre.

Benoit Blanc suspects foul play – again – in the first teaser trailer for “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”

The “Knives Out” sequel finds Daniel Craig’s detective Blanc returning for an all-new mystery at an all-new location with an all-new lineup of suspects, with Rian Johnson back to write and direct. This time, Blanc is invited to Greece by a billionaire (played by Edward Norton) where he’s gathered his friends for a murder mystery game of his own.

The ensemble includes Kate Hudson, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick, Dave Bautista and Madelyn Cline.

Released in 2019, “Knives Out” was a critical and commercial hit, grossing $311 million worldwide and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Johnson. Following the film’s success, Johnson and producer Ram Bergman signed a deal with Netflix to make two additional “Knives Out” movies with Craig’s Benoit Blanc solving new mysteries.

Agatha Christie’s novels served as the initial inspiration for “Knives Out,” and “Glass Onion” follows in the mystery author’s footsteps by switching up the setting, tone and characters surrounding an all-new whodunit.

Watch the “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” teaser trailer above. The sequel will be released in select theaters before premiering globally on Netflix on Dec. 23.

The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 10, so check back on TheWrap then for our review of the new sequel.

EXCLUSIVE: Some of the world’s most acclaimed actors owe their careers in no small measure to a single woman: Bonnie Timmermann. Without her, Liam Neeson, Kate Winslet, Steve Buscemi, Viggo Mortensen, Brian Cox, Mark Ruffalo, Melissa Leo, Benicio del Toro and so many others might have lingered in the shadows of Hollywood, their talents never fully recognized.

Timmermann, one of the industry’s most respected casting directors, has been turning unknowns into stars for decades now. After a lifetime spent behind the scenes, she emerges as the subject of the documentary Bonnie, which makes its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday.

“She saw something in me that maybe other people didn’t see… maybe that I didn’t even see in myself” Buscemi says in the film directed by Simon Wallon. Actor Giancarlo Esposito echoes that sentiment, saying, “Bonnie believed in me.” Cox tells Timmermann, “It was a major, major thing for me, meeting you.”

Among the films she has cast are Trading Places (1983), The Karate Kid (1984), Dirty Dancing (1987), Bull Durham (1988), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), Carlito’s Way (1993), Dave (1993), Quiz Show (1994), Armageddon (1998), Pearl Harbor (2001), Man on Fire (2004), and many of director Michael Mann’s projects including Manhunter in the 1980s, Heat and The Insider in the 1990s, Public Enemies in the 2000s and Blackhat in the 2010s. She also cast Mann’s seminal TV series Miami Vice, changing television by forcefully advocating for diverse actors and then-unknowns like Esposito, del Toro, Ving Rhames, Jimmy Smits, Buscemi, Neeson, Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts, and Helena Bonham Carter, among others.

An eye for young talent, unexpected choices, as well as persistence with directors who make the final casting decisions, are qualities that have made Timmermann such a standout in her field.

“I just go back again and again until they want to hit me over the head with a fry pan,” Timmermann admits. “I keep going back ‘til either [the director] agrees or I give up.”

Kinology is handling international sales of Bonnie out of Venice. The film is directed by Wallon; producers are Amanda Sthers, Thomas Augsberger, and Wallon.

The film is chock full of videotaped auditions featuring a bunch of fresh-faced actors before they became household names. Get a taste for it by watching the exclusive clip above.

EXCLUSIVE: Some of the world’s most acclaimed

Reservoir Docs has acquired documentary “The Other Fellow,” which is about several men named James Bond, like the movie’s hero. It has debuted the trailer (below).

The comedy-thriller premiered and won an award at Doc Edge New Zealand, and gets its European premiere in Dinard at the British Film Festival in France.

In Jamaica in 1952, author Ian Fleming needs a name for his suave, sophisticated secret agent, so he steals one from an unaware birdwatcher and creates a pop-culture phenomenon about the ultimate fictional alpha-male.

In 2022, the year of 007’s 60th anniversary onscreen, Australian filmmaker Matthew Bauer is on a global mission to discover the lasting, contrasting and very personal impacts of sharing such an identity with James Bond.

From a Swedish 007 super-fan with a World War II past, a gay New York theater director, an African American Bond accused of murder, and two resilient women caught up in it all, Bauer’s cinematic mission is “an audacious, poignant, and insightful examination of masculinity, gender, and race in the very real shadows of a movie icon,” Reservoir Docs said.

Bauer said: “What interested me was not so much that these men are named James Bond, but how the name connects them to a global media phenomenon – literally, emotionally, and especially digitally. The real plot of ‘The Other Fellow’ centers around the surprising ways its force pushes and pulls their lives in the most unexpected directions. And how it connects them together in ways you’d never anticipate.”

It is produced by Bauer and Michelle Brøndum, and edited by Lesley Posso. The music is composed by Alastair McNamara.

Brøndum said: “I have no doubt that the real human stories at the heart of this film will resonate with everyone who sees it.”

The team at Reservoir Docs has previously sold internationally “I Am Not Your Negro” and “The Black Power Mixtape.”

The Family Man 2
Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Samantha Akkineni, Sharib Hashmi, Priyamani
Creators: Raj and DK

A lot has changed since the first season of The Family Man, which released without much fanfare and hype, just a week before the highly advertised Bard of Blood. But as the saying goes, its success made so much noise that the anticipation around the second season was at an all-time high. It’s a tricky situation to be in but then you have excellent creators like Raj and DK, and a Manoj Bajpayee who looks nothing like the secret agents we are used to but exactly like the one we need.

The canvas is bigger and the action sleeker. The villains mean business and the heroes block their ways. In between, the audience gets what they always wanted—sharp jokes, unhinged entertainment and a heavy dose of patriotism.

Srikant Tiwari (Manoj Bajpayee) returns from his corporate job to head a dangerous mission in Chennai. His domestic matters with wife Suchi (Priyamani) and kids are anyway in a jeopardy, and on top of it, his adversaries decide to give their animosity a personal touch. This time, he is confronted by a group of Sri Lankan Tamil rebels headed by a super deadly Raji (Samantha Akkineni). Apart from ideologies, this is also a war of wit and grit.

It’s all in the writing that makes The Family Man 2 a fast-paced and quirky yet highly emotional drama. There are sharp jibes at education system, mental health scenario and language divide. For example, Tiwari gets really perplexed when a teenage schoolgirl bombards him with terms like feminazi and libertarian. It’s only an actor of Bajpayee’s calibre who could have brought humour in the oddest situations. Then there is an ex-intelligence officer who prefers to be discreet. His penchant for eloping without a trace after brief conversation is hilarious.

And not to forget Tiwari and JK’s (Sharib Hashmi) banters. It’s a great pair that works in total tandem. They can generate laughter at will.

Now, the important inclusion in the new season—Samantha’s Raji. The makers have subtly introduced her craving for affection and recognisition without shoving clichéd information down our throats like most Bollywood projects featuring extremists do. She has handled her part with a lot of care. With such a measured performance, Samantha is likely to win many more fans in the Hindi showbiz.

Its comic sequences are spot on before turning serious around the fifth episode. Similarly, the action part takes the center-stage in the later episodes and contribute in giving it a fitting finale.

The characters we met in the first season are trying to find a footing in the risk prone world of Tiwari. They’re also getting matured and witnessing a natural progression while accepting the truths about their lives.

Coming back to Manoj Bajpayee, it’s his show. An actor par excellence who keeps pushing the envelope. It’s a character of a lifetime for him. It’s hard to imagine any other contemporary actor transitioning through so many moods in such a short time.

The Family Man 2 on Amazon prime Video is detailed, funny, exciting and seamless. You won’t have to look at the time while binging through the nine episodes. Also, watch every episode till the end credits for excellent background music selection.

August 24, 2022: Wilde talks to Variety, dismissing rumors of a feud, saying, “Tabloid media is a tool to pit women against one another and to shame them.” She also describes the departure of LaBeouf thusly: “His process was not conducive to the ethos that I demand in my productions. He has a process that, in some ways, seems to require a combative energy, and I don’t personally believe that is conducive to the best performances. I believe that creating a safe, trusting environment is the best way to get people to do their best work. Ultimately, my responsibility is to the production and to the cast to protect them. That was my job.”

August 26, 2022: LaBeouf tells Variety that he “quit the film due to lack of rehearsal time.”

LaBeouf claims that he and the director spoke about his quitting together, and that after a conversation the night before he officially left (mid-August 2020), Wilde texted him, “Thanks for letting me in on your thought process. I know that isn’t fun. Doesn’t feel good to say no to someone, and I respect your honesty. I’m honored you were willing to go there with me, for me to tell a story with you. I’m gutted because it could have been something special. I want to make clear how much it means to me that you trust me. That’s a gift I’ll take with me.”

The actor also sent Variety a video that Wilde had allegedly sent him at some point during all this negotiation, in which she refers to Pugh as “Miss Flo” and seems to confirm that the actors did not get along. “I feel like I’m not ready to give up on this yet, and I too am heartbroken and I want to figure this out,” she says in the video, which has leaked online. “I think this might be a bit of a wake-up call for Miss Flo,” Wilde continues, adding, “If she really commits, if she really puts her mind and heart into it at this point and if you guys can make peace—and I respect your point of view, I respect hers—but if you guys can do it, what do you think? Is there hope?”

How much of this is savvy PR for LaBeouf’s attempted redemption arc? In an email he shared with Variety, he writes to Wilde to both offer to make amends and also dispute her press strategy. Read for yourself and decide. Keep in mind that he told everyone he was abused by his father as depicted in his movie Honey Boy…and recently admitted that was not true.

August 24, 2022: Wilde talks to Variety,

After two years of an Emmy party field dramatically reduced by the pandemic, the festivities around the 2022 ceremonies are starting to resemble the hustle and bustle of the 2010s — with the addition of Covid testing, a lot of it.

We haven’t had formal agency Emmy parties in four years as plans for 2019 bashes were canceled amid the agencies’ standoff with the WGA. CAA and UTA are back this year, with CAA picking up where it left off in 2018, holding a party at Rose Café in Venice. It will be the agency’s first public event after the recent acquisition of ICM, which traditionally hosted Emmy brunches at the home of CEO Chris Silbermann.

UTA, whose popular party had been held at the home of co-president Jay Sures for many years, is taking over the Rooftop at Waldorf Astoria.

The other Hollywood talent agencies and management companies that threw Emmy parties before the pandemic are skipping this year for various reasons, including the overlap with the Toronto Film Festival, but many vow to resume junkets next year.

Disney is back to its stomping grounds with a companywide post-Emmy party at downtown L.A.’s Otium, which also hosted Disney talent and executives in 2019. Ditto for Netflix, which is back at Milk Studios. Like Disney, recently merged Paramount also is holding one party for all of its divisions.

HBO & HBO Max are sticking with their pandemic venue the San Vicente Bungalows. The sibling premium outlets held a small post-Emmy party for talent at the private-members club last year, moving from HBO’s signature — and massive in size — Pacific Design Center location.

Other perennial Emmy weekend events such as the Governors Ball (renamed Governors Gala), the MPTF’s Evening Before, as well as AMC Networks and BAFTA’s daytime receptions, are also making appearances on this year’s list.

A 160ft James Bond-themed superyacht named 007 has sunk just yards off a Greek beach.

The vessel, which is thought to be owned by a Swiss businessman but was sailing under a British flag, ran aground after hitting rocks just 49ft off the picturesque Kolona Bay on the island of Kythnos.

The boat’s GPS allegedly malfunctioned and led the boat towards the shore before it started listing heavily on the port side as water started pouring in.

Coast Guard answered mayday calls and the five passengers on board were quickly rescued after it started sinking on Friday evening. By Saturday, the yacht was almost fully submerged.

‘In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than ten metres depth, and that’s how the ship got to that position. No people were hurt.

After a non-stop binge session of the first five episodes of Tell Me Lies, all I can say is that I have no idea how I feel about Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) or Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White), and the bizarre part is, I am not even mad about it. Lucy, I have a little bit of a better read on, I think. She is emotionally detached and is looking to find a way to feel something, which pushes her to make rash decisions and ultimately into the arms of Stephen.

However, Stephen has me at a loss. My mind feels like it’s on one of those balancing scales, and I can’t decide how I feel about him. It seems to change moment to moment, episode to episode. Sometimes we (as the audience) know more than Lucy, and other times we know more than Stephen. This non-stop, mess-with-your-mind storytelling mimics Lucy and Stephen’s toxic relationship, which is why to Tell Me Lies surpasses all shows that have come before it.

Tell Me Lies — “Hot-Blooded” – Episode 102 — Lucy struggles with the aftermath of Welcome Week and goes on her first date with Stephen. Lucy (Grace Van Patten), shown. (Photo by: Josh Stringer/Hulu)

Tell Me Lies is an adaptation of Carola Lovering’s novel of the same name and was created and executive produced by Meaghan Oppenheimer, alongside executive producers Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss. The premiere begins in 2015, eight years after graduating from Baird University. The college grads are all getting back together to celebrate two friends getting married.

However, all anyone can talk about when it comes to Lucy is Stephen. None of her friends have any faith that she will be able to resist him at the wedding, while another says how much better she is now than she was “then” (which is another clue that things didn’t go smoothly between Lucy and Stephen).

We slowly meet some of the friend group that makes up the show which includes Pippa (Sonia Mena), Bree (Catherine Missal), Wrigley (Spencer House), Evan (Branden Cook), and of course, Stephen. Right after Lucy and Stephen lock eyes at the wedding, the show flashes back to 2007 as Lucy prepares to leave home while nonchalantly breaking up with her hometown boyfriend. Thus, the story of how Lucy and Stephen met begins.

While we have seen glimpses of White at this point, we officially meet him as Stephen at a party on campus during the first week; it’s clear he’s a little off-center, slightly socially awkward, but intelligent. It feels like he uses his intelligence and charm to draw his prey to him, and he already has eyes on his next prize, Lucy. At the party, he talks fast, makes her uncomfortable, and plays the game like he has done it one hundred times before.

While Lucy seems to hold him at bay, he does step in intimately to tell her the dress she is wearing is “killing him.” His honesty and intensity are something that catches Lucy’s eye. She tries to slow things down between them but like two magnets pulling them together, neither can resist the polar energy. Their relationship begins fast, with the intoxication growing minute by minute.

While it is unclear what Lucy hopes to get out of her college experience, one thing is clear; she is flawed. As she reacts to situations at school, we begin to see serious detachment issues and a lack of emotional connection. She sometimes makes poor decisions, as if going through the motions.

Lucy is flailing and is looking for anything or anyone to grab onto. She is clearly in pain, but it’s buried behind a thick wall. At this moment, you realize the power of Van Patten’s acting. Lucy could have come off indifferent or cold, but Van Patten has this way of owning the scene when she is on camera. You instantly connect with her. Van Patten lures you into the story almost as fast as her character makes friends. For some reason, you also want to be friends with Lucy. That is all credit to Van Patten’s ability to bring sympathy and understanding to a hardened character; a skill few actors can achieve. Van Patten’s willingness to push herself further as an actor (who takes significant risks on this show) is a joy to watch, and the pay-off shows. Somehow she always outdoes herself, raising her bar to perfection every time, never missing the mark, and consistently hitting the bullseye.

Now it takes two to tango, and her partner is nothing short of pure perfection. White becomes Stephen in this role, spending time to reign in all emotions in any situation thrown at his character. The subtleness of his feelings (for the most part) and his lack of empathy (Stephen would call it persuasion) make it very hard to get a read on Stephen. Sometimes, it seems he is trying to ruin everything in his path, and at other moments, he comes off sweet and caring. The mono-tone of Stephen’s voice even makes it hard to decipher him. We struggle to figure him out as Lucy struggles. White gives nothing away, and after watching five episodes, I am no clearer to figuring him out or understanding where his character will go. This lack of direction is refreshing, as romantic dramas are usually predictable, setting Tell Me Lies apart from the crowd. White is outstanding in his performance as someone that can not be tamed or explained.

White makes the ride more enjoyable than the rollercoaster we are on with him. His acting is calculated but natural, fun but serious. He put in the work to make it seem effortless. White is someone to start following because playing this character has shown the world so many facets of his acting, proving he is unstoppable. One episode that stands out in particular with Stephen is episode 5. There is much to unpack when we meet his mom [actor’s embargoed], who does an incredible job adding to the story. It’s worth the wait.

Although there is a ton of Lucy and Stephen drama — don’t count out their friends, who all have fully fleshed-out storylines. One of my favorites to watch is Wrigley. When we met him at the wedding for a few seconds, he was the “making a scene at the wedding” guy. But when we go back, we see he was a fun-loving football player in a relationship, doing everything he could to help his brother and friends.

House accomplishes two things; first, he makes Wrigley such a lovable character with so much more to him than your typical jock. Second, he transforms everything about Wrigley as the episodes go on due to the complications in his life. You feel nothing but heartache and sadness when you rewatch the first few minutes of the first episode. House does a master class in shifting his character through it so subtly that if you don’t rewatch the first episode as you watch the series, you forget how much he has changed. House is remarkable.

Tell Me Lies — “We Don’t Touch, We Collide” – Episode 103 — Pressure on Wrigley intensifies, bleeding into his relationship with Pippa. Lucy and Stephen discuss exclusivity. Wrigley (Spencer House), shown. (Photo by: Josh Stringer/Hulu)

However, one of the best topics this show tackles is sex; instead of showing these magical, dreamy sex scenes, where everything goes right with beautiful music and golden hues — Oppenheimer sets a tone that is grittier and real. We see small dorm rooms, tiny beds, window lighting, and not always the best sex. The sex scenes differ with the various pairings, which adds to the authenticity because no two people have sex the same way. Additionally, the actors had an intimacy coordinator on set to make them comfortable. When I spoke to Oppenheimer about how refreshing it was to see some fumbling sex scenes and awkward moments, Oppenheimer added, “well, let’s be honest, not everyone has great sex in college,” and it was essential to show that. Oppenheimer, Roberts, and Preiss are a dream team adding a much-needed set of female voices in a void that needs to be closed.

Most of the time, these stories are told by men, showcasing women in a more idealistic view. This story, written by a woman and adapted by a team of women, is a game changer. We need more stories from these influential geniuses because it’s accurate and genuine. No one should allow for anything less when watching a show; you should demand more of it. I cannot wait to see what else these women have coming down the pipeline; maybe some Emmys? Let’s hope so.

So as we all go on this journey together, I look back and think, have I ever been with a Stephen…YES (haven’t we all?). A relationship like that is filled with dramatic “end of the world” moments where all the decisions feel weighted. You get so entangled that you blow past any red flags and ignore most of the bad because something kept you on the hook…the in-between moments, you know, the good ones. So will Lucy be able to stand her ground at the wedding? Will we even find out what happens down the road?

This show is addictive, forbidden in a good way, and reminds us that we never forget our worst. But the real question is how do we move on from them, or do we stay stuck in an eternal purgatory of bad decisions cushioned/overlooked by passion and nostalgia? Your guess is as good as mine; we will have to see as the story unfolds.

Tell Me Lies is currently streaming its first three episodes on Hulu, with new episodes released weekly.

Kim Kardashian is being transparent about how her marriage to Kanye West affected her top spot. The 41-year-old creator of SKIMS recounted the time she realized she had entered high society while interviewing with Interview editor-in-chief Mel Ottenberg for the magazine’s September 2022 American Dream edition.

Kardashian stated, “I believe that certainly got a large number of individuals to have a new level of reverence when I was with Kanye, and he was presenting me to a number of individuals.

The former couple started dating in 2012 and got hitched in 2014 before Kardashian filed for separation. North, 9, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 3, are their four joint children.

Not just her relationship with 45-year-old West has earned Kardashian new appreciation, according to her.

Additionally, I’ve noticed that people admire me more now that I’m attending law school, doing what I want, and being my own person. The addition of the star added levels.

Additionally, during her conversation with Interview, Kim Kardashian was complimentary of her recently ended relationship with Pete Davidson. Davidson remarked, “He’s a hottie,” when Ottenberg made a BDE joke and mentioned Davidson as a potential Interview cover star.

He is genuinely such a lovely person that they no longer manufacture people like him, she said. I’m eager to see what he has in store.

In a comedy on her SNL hosting debut in October last year, Kardashian and Davidson shared their first smooch. The following month, when they were seen arm in arm on a rollercoaster ride at Knott’s Berry Farm, their relationship was publicized. Then, in February, Davidson called Kardashian his girlfriend and openly acknowledged their romance to PEOPLE.

According to a source who spoke to PEOPLE, Davidson and Kardashian called it quits in August after dating for nine months. Their hectic schedule was a factor in their separation.

Following the global success of “Squid Game,” Netflix’s Korean survival drama series that scored 14 Emmy nominations this year, Korean television companies are intent on producing more content that appeals to international audiences.

“We surely [don’t] want this to be a one-shot opportunity, and I do agree [‘Squid Game’] opened a lot of doors — not only for the experienced creatives or directors, but even a lot of opportunities for newly coming creatives and writers,” Albert Park, senior sales manager of CJ ENM, told Variety. “I do think that it’s our job now to work with all these talented, young and upcoming creatives to really put up a show that is unparalleled to ‘Squid Game.’”

In a Variety Streaming Room panel presented by KOCCA, Variety deputy awards and features editor Jenelle Riley spoke to Park; global business director of MBC Haewon Chin; SBS executive director and FormatEast senior director Iljoong Kim; and president of Something Special Jin Woo Hwang.

The panelists discussed the types of shows their platforms are developing, particularly those that feature “universal” content.

On MBC’s thriller series “Hunted,” Chin said: “It’s setting is in a very rural Korean site. But actually, when you look at the story — the emotional thing — the ambition and the greed that they are getting at is a very human thing.”

Another topic was current trends in Korean television, such as reality dating series.

“In Korea, it’s really hard to express there’s a sexual desire or get involved in the explicit sexual behaviors, so I [would] say that there is an implicit censorship on the dating show,” Kim, who was accompanied by a translator, explained. “So when we combine the different and the foreign elements into a dating show, it will make the dating shows more interesting.”

Meanwhile, Park compared CJ ENM’s “Exchange” to Western dating show formats, describing “Exchange” as “more authentic.”

“It’s not focusing on the appearance — or what we call the bikini formats — but more on the emotional lines and [the] complications of really playing around with these emotions,” Park added.

Following the global success of “Squid Game,”

Taylor Swift claims two rival experts tapped to testify at her upcoming “Shake It Off” copyright infringement trial are “not qualified” to take the witness stand and should be blocked by the “gatekeeper” judge.

In a new motion obtained by Rolling Stone, the superstar argues one of the challenged witnesses has failed to give a legitimate basis for his claim that 50% of “Shake It Off’s” profits are attributable to the “players play” and “haters hate” phrases that songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler allege were stolen from their 2001 song “Playas Gon’ Play,” written for the all-female R&B trio 3LW.

Swift, who claims the phrases are public domain, also says the disputed expert, Bob Kohn, should be barred from sharing his opinion that Swift’s song would lose all “force, meaning and energy” without the phrases.

“[Kohn] is a lawyer who plays no musical instruments and claims expertise because he saw The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show and—like most if not all of us—listens to music,” the new motion that was filed Monday on Swift’s behalf by lawyers Peter Anderson, Sean M. Sullivan and Eric Lamm at Davis Wright Tremaine argues.

“His deposition testimony confirms he is simply making it up as he goes along,” the lawyers said of Kohn, a New York-based lawyer who authored a book on music licensing.

Swift’s motion further claims that a George Washington University musicology professor also slated to testify for Hall and Butler has no training in “comparative literary analysis.” Swift’s side claims such expertise is necessary because the lawsuit makes no claim related to “Shake It Off’s” musical composition, only its “substantially similar” lyrics.

“He does not have any understanding as to the methodology used in the comparative linguistic analysis of two works. He also does not teach literature or poetry and has never written a song or lyrics,” the motion reads.

The lawsuit, originally filed in 2017, was initially dismissed by U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald in 2018, but it was revived on appeal and returned to his court by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Judge Fitzgerald has yet to rule on Swift’s request to bar the experts.

“Taylor and the other defendants have filed dozens of motions to avoid facing the merits of this case.  We believe the court will see through this blizzard of filings to allow justice to light the way forward,” Hall and Butler’s lawyer Gerard Fox said in a statement to Rolling Stone on Wednesday.

In Hall and Butler’s song, the allegedly infringed lyrics are, “playas, they gonna play,” and “haters, they gonna hate.” According to Swift and her lawyers, the short phrases are free for everyone to use. In her song, the lyrics state, “Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play, and the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.”

A rep for Swift previously called the lawsuit a shakedown.

“These men are not the originators, or creators, of the common phrases ‘Players’ or ‘Haters’ or combinations of them. They did not invent these common phrases nor are they the first to use them in a song,” the rep told Rolling Stone. “Their claim is not a crusade for all creatives, it is a crusade for Mr. Hall’s bank account.”

The trial is set to begin January 17, 2023.

Karan Johar has penned a heartwarming note

It’s not often that Marvel Studios or Sony Pictures re-release one of their big budget films on the big screen, let alone as a different cut.  Prior to this film, Marvel Studios re-released Avengers : Endgame, only to include an unfinished scene of the Hulk.  It was practically the same movie.  Spider-Man : No Way Home, by comparison, adds a bit more to the experience that it does make a difference in key areas.

SPOILERS BELOW

Understanding the Magic

Of the most noticeable changes to this extended cut, is the new post credit scene taking the place of the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness teaser.  This new scene follows a recap of the previous movies presented as a student movie made by Peter’s class.  Due to the impact of Dr. Strange’s second spell, this new scene confirms all documentation of Peter’s existence has been erased or altered.  This clarifies one of the biggest questions of the original release.

With the original cut, many were unsure of how exactly Strange’s new spell worked. A brief shot of a G.E.D test hints at the extent of the spell in the original cut.  This new scene, however, confirms all documentation of Peter’s existence is altered in some form.  In most cases, Peter is entirely removed from video or photos.  In one photo, a bird flies in view of where Peter’s face is, essentially scrubbing him from the photo.

Perception of Peter

Among the other notable changes is the additional sequences of Peter’s time at school following his acquittal.  The original film only briefly touches on how chaotic and stressed Peter feels about the situation.  This new scene, however, better connects us to Peter’s struggle with being a controversial figure, as he gives into the pressure of using his powers during class.  The additional scene with Betty Brant interviewing Peter’s teachers and Flash also adds to this, while providing a bit of comedy as well.

This cut also features the implementation of a cut scene that involved Tom’s brother Harry as a thief.  While this does break the pace a bit, it does offer a better look at how people view him as Spider-Man now.  Multiple civilians have differing viewpoints of him, with some supporting him, others pointing out his youth, and others critical of him.  One man speculates that he was even working with the thief to make himself look good in the public eye.  It also better displays the moment when Peter’s suit was stained with paint by a Mysterio supporter, which was only briefly seen as a video in the original film.

A Little More Fun Stuff

'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Returning to Theaters With 'The More Fun Stuff Version'

Perhaps the most exciting prospect of this extended cut was the promise of more time with all three Spidey’s.  This extended cut does give the audience just that, albeit by expanding a scene.  This new cut expands upon the conversation the three have prior to the final battle.  While it may not seem like much, the conversation they have flows much better. When re-watching the original cut, it’s hard not to notice the strange cuts in the conversation now.  It also gives the organic webbing conversation a much different context now.  Yes, it is exactly what many suspect it would reference.

Among other scenes added was a scene with Matt Murdock defending Happy from the law.

FINAL THOUGHTS – A LITTLE MORE FUN, BUT NOT MULTIVERSE SHATTERING

Overall, Spider-Man : No Way Home’s re-release doesn’t add enough that would drastically change the film.  Rather, the scenes included refined aspects of the existing story.  Often they add more context to existing plot elements, while other scenes let us get more in the character’s head space.  It’s overall a slightly better film than the original cut, a film which already stands as one of Spider-Man’s strongest.

It's not often that Marvel Studios or

House of the Dragon is now on its third episode.  Much like the previous episode, the quality continues to soar upwards, and the episode stands among the strongest in the realm of Westeros.

The Downfall Begins

Skipping forward a year, the issues setup in the previous two episodes are starting to take effect.  Viserys’ is slowly losing his grasp on the situation, and stress is overtaking him.  With a newborn son to Alicent Hightower, daughter of the Hand of the King, questions begin to arise as to whether or not young Aegon will supplant Rhaenyra as heir, or if Viserys will stick to his word.  Rifts begin to form, with Rhaenyra now scornful towards her former friend turned queen, and her father who longed so much for a son.

Rhaenyra

Dreamers and Dragon Riders

Once again, the performances of Paddy Considine and Milly Alcock stand out.  While they clearly still care for each other, much like life, politics is slowly tearing them apart.  Considine takes multiple scenes to stand out, with a bonfire scene that burns brighter than others.  It’s here that all of Viserys’ frustrations come out, with a compelling speech of dreams and dragon riders.  Alcock’s performance continues to draw parallels to Danerys, as moments of her cold, calculating, and mad nature shine, along with a serene side which appreciates life.  Animals play a large part in this episode, particularly a deer and a boar.  The interactions Viserys and Rhaenyra have with them provide subtle, yet fascinating insights to their character.

Daemon

Blood of the Dragon

It isn’t just these Targaryens that get to shine this episode.  While the first two-thirds focus on those in King’s Landing, the final section focuses on the encounter with the Crabfeeder, and it’s here the show gets its first major battle scene.  Daemon’s ruthless, yet careless abilities are put on full display.  While undoubtedly a skilled combatant, his aggressive nature is shown to get the best of him.  If not for the reluctant re-enforcement he received from Viserys, it’s all too likely he’d have been defeated.

The battle is short, but its fire burns brighter than many.  Like the best battles of Game of Thrones, it’s bloody, it’s intimate, and it ramps up the longer it goes.  In many ways, the episode brought back memories of episodes like Battle of the Bastards, or Winds of Winter.  So much is set up, paid off, and well executed that it is hard to find any faults.

Final Thoughts

House of the Dragon has now reached the point where it is truly standing on its own.  Unique plot lines, characters, and set pieces give this show its own distinct identity.  Still, with the emphasis on blood, politics, and bloodlines, the spirit of Game of Thrones is strong.  While the first two episodes showed promise, it couldn’t quite find its own voice yet.  With Episode 3, Second of His Name; House of the Dragon now stands as more than just a simple Game of Thrones prequel.

House of the Dragon is now on its

Hugh Jackman says he was driven to reach out directly to Florian Zeller to ask if he could star in The Son, the playwright-turned-filmmaker’s sophomore feature following his acclaimed — and Oscar-winning — directorial debut The Father.

Like The Father, The Son was adapted from one of Zeller’s plays, this time tackling the subject of depression and centering on 17-year-old Nicholas — newcomer Zen McGrath — whose growing struggle with mental health begins to devastate the lives of his New York lawyer father Peter (Jackman) and mother Kate (Laura Dern). Vanessa Kirby, meanwhile, plays Beth, Pete’s new partner, the arrival of whom and his parent’s divorce Nicholas largely blames for his deteriorating condition.

Speaking at the film’s press conference in Venice ahead of its world premiere on Wednesday evening, Jackman said he’d seen The Father and had almost appeared in one of Zeller’s plays, but the script for The Son gave him a rare burning desire that told him he had to play Peter.

“When I read The Son I had a feeling like a fire in my gut,” he said, speaking alongside Zeller, Dern, Kirby and McGrath. “It’s a scary feeling to have, but it’s beautiful. You rarely get it as an actor, that this part is right for you at this part of your life and you must get it.”

The fear, Jackman admitted, was the he wouldn’t get the part, so he emailed Zeller directly. “I said, I don’t know if you’re dancing with someone on this, and I don’t want to cut in on that dance.”

Thankfully, Zeller hadn’t been dancing with any other actor, and a subsequent Zoom meeting with Jackman immediately told him he had his man.

“After 8 minutes I offered him the part,” Zeller explained. “I felt something really strong about why he was connected to that story, and that we could explore really emotional territories. And it was the best decision I ever made, because from then on it was the most fruitful journey.”

Dern noted the timing of The Son, saying that film was being released during “greatest crisis” coming out of the pandemic, which is the “epidemic of mental health, especially in adolescents.”

“It’s frightening,” she said. “Even you feel powerless, even when you feel alone in shame, guilt and blame, you can turn to so many who have been there before and may advise you. We all long to feel community in this larger conversation we must be having about mental health.”

Following its Venice bow, The Son is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on Nov. 11.

Jane Fonda issued a thank you to fans and others who have reached out with words of support in the four days since she revealed she has Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system.

Fonda, writing on her website Tuesday night, said she was “deeply moved and uplifted by all the expressions of love and support.”

“My heartfelt thanks to all,” Fonda wrote. “The messages of love and support mean the world to me. I want to say again that this is a very treatable cancer and much progress has been made with the medicines patients are given.

“Since last week, so many people have written to me or posted that they have had this type of cancer and have been cancer-free for many decades,” Fonda continued. “Well, I’ll soon be 85 so I won’t have to worry about ‘many decades.’ One will do just fine.”

Fonda, who stars with her good friend Lily Tomlin in “Moving On,” which premieres this month at the Toronto Film Festival, said she will start chemotherapy in three weeks and felt “stronger than I have in years.”

“The doctor told me the best antidote to the tiredness that chemotherapy can cause is to move. Walk. And I have been walking. Very early before the record heat kicks in. Also working out,” she wrote.

The Bordelon family’s return for their final season wasn’t as much of a bang as was expected, but more of a slow burn.

Something was missing from Queen Sugar Season 7 Episode 1, or should we say, someone.

Dawn-Lyen Gardner chose not to return as a regular cast member this season, and her absence was felt during this premiere.

Charley was such an integral part of this series that simply having her name mentioned or her face show up on the phone wasn’t good enough. Queen Sugar may follow the Bordelon family, but Charley’s journey led viewers into this world.

Charley struggled to feel a part of this family. Her determination, intelligence, and love helped save it from the brink. And with Sam Landry again trying to destroy the family farm, it feels like they need her now more than ever.

But Charley and Davis are offscreen, as Charley chose to pursue her political career in California, and none of that feels right.

I’m sure Charley will do good work anywhere, but wouldn’t she have more of an impact in a conservative, red state like Louisiana?

But with the actress choosing not to return, I suppose there’s nothing more to do than have this story go forward without her.

And there’s certainly no lack of talent amongst the rest of this cast.

For the first half of this premiere, it felt like they were torturing us by calling Ralph Angel and Darla’s daughter everything but her given name.

Tru Bordelon is the perfect way for Ralph Angel to honor his mother and connect this child with her family history.

Speaking of Ralph Angel, he’s trying to pull together the co-op and working on the fish trawler to make ends meet.

As Darla pointed out, perhaps that’s a good thing. Ralph Angel does better when he’s too busy to make poor choices.

This isn’t the end. We begin again. Like you did before, and they did before us.

Darla

And those very choices are what handed the Bordelon farm over to Sam Landry. It’s why Ralph Angel can’t even bare to drive by the farm now. It must be all the more painful knowing that this is his fault.

But he’s making up for it by putting his heart and soul into the black farmers’ co-op. As Mo pointed out, 80% of the people farming in Louisiana are black and brown, but only 3% are the owners.

It will be difficult to change that if these farmers default on their mortgages because the debt relief has stalled. It was a relief to hear Billie take that seriously, but I don’t have high hopes that they’ll get the answers they need from the bank.

It appears Billie has settled into St. Jo’s, but if she doesn’t pick up the phone and talk to her ex, it will be no surprise when he shows up on her doorstep to disrupt her new life.

Prosper asked Sandy on a date, and the fact that it took him six months to ask her has me waffling between whether I find it sweet or sad.

Billie: You look nice. Hot date?
Prosper: Oh, hush. Just heading over to Sandy’s. She needs help fixing her window.
Billie: You must have fixed her whole house by now, Daddy.

It was good to see that Micah and Isaiah are still friends and that there’s no awkwardness with Isaiah sending Micah pictures of the guy he finds cute.

But I have mixed feelings about Micah’s run-in with Keke.

Micah: Honestly, I was just surprised to see you.
Keke: I know. You looked like a deer at the start of hunting season. You never liked surprises.

Micah still comes across as insecure around Keke, and I wish he didn’t. I also didn’t appreciate Keke pushing Micah to get high even after he told her he had an important family function to attend. That felt adolescent and disprespectful.

I don’t enjoy seeing Micah as a player jumping from one bed to the next, but I’d also like to see him grow up and move on from Keke. This feels like Micah being pulled backward instead of moving forward.

Finally, we get to Nova.

Nova and Dominic have been working together and dating for six months. So why is it I’m still not sure about him?

Regarding the long-term sustainability of this relationship, I think Aunt Vi pulled on the right thread. Nova described their relationship as “nice,” with no drama. To which Vi replied, “If nice is enough for you, then God bless.”

Violet: What are you all gossiping about? Dominic? I want to hear. Spill it. It’s been six months. That’s almost a lifetime in Nova years.
Nova: Hey, that’s not fair. I’m not that bad. I was with Calvin for almost five years. I know. Four of those, he was still married. Nothing to tell. Dominic is great.
Violet: Well, we’re all glad. We like him, and we were worried. We didn’t want to lose him. You know, you can go through men like water.
Nova: Where is this coming from? And I haven’t only dated men.
Violet: And we never meet the ladies.

I think we all know that “nice” isn’t going to hold Nova’s attention for long. And the sparks were definitely flying when Nova met Mo.

This leads me to something interesting that Vi pointed out about Nova. She only introduces the men in her life to her family, not women.

Does that hesitance mean she’s not entirely comfortable with her bisexuality, or is it because she doesn’t believe her family will accept her with a woman? I’m hoping this is explored more in-depth during this final season.

But Nova has far more significant challenges than her love life. She’s being offered close to $1 million to turn Blessings and Blood into a movie.

That much money could be life-changing. Unfortunately, that book caused nothing but pain for her family. It reopened old wounds and unearthed buried traumas.

A movie would reach an even wider audience and bring more attention to the Bordelons. It’s hard to see how any good will come of it, yet how many of us could turn down that kind of money?

Finally, we learned that all of Nova’s good work in researching the living ancestors of the massacre was being turned against her family. The only upside of Sam Landry’s visit was that he didn’t have Parker in tow. If Charley isn’t there to keep Parker in check, I see no reason for the character to return.

Sam, and the secrets he and Violet still share, are more than enough to pique my interest and add plenty of intrigue.

Violet: Sam, you’re sure you want to go down this path? You know where it leads.
Sam: You didn’t leave us any choice, Vi.

So what did you think, Queen Sugar fans? Are you upset by Charley’s absence? Is Nova ashamed of her bisexuality? Will Nova and Dominic become a long-term couple? And are you already in love with little Tru Bordelon?

The Bordelon family's return for their final

HBO’s “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus,” as well as Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” lead the early Emmy tally heading toward TV’s big night: All three series landed five trophies during the Creative Arts Emmys, dispensed on two consecutive nights over Labor Day weekend, and are in the hunt for more high-profile prizes Sept. 12 when the 74th annual Primetime Emmy ceremony gets underway on NBC.

Variety special “Adele: One Night Only” and docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back” also scored five trophies, though they won’t figure in the Primetime Emmy ceremony. Those wins, along with the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show’s victory for variety special (live), led some to quip that the Creative Arts Emmys felt more like the Grammys.

Also notable: Former president Barack Obama landed his first Emmy win, as narrator (for “Our Great National Parks”), while Netflix became the first streamer to take the animated program Emmy, with “Arcane.” And “Chip ’N Dale: Rescue Rangers” became the first animated victor in the TV movie category.

In bittersweet news, Chadwick Boseman won a posthumous Emmy for character voice-over performance (for “What If …”). And the team for “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” won for outstanding short form nonfiction or reality series, just a few weeks after TBS canceled the show.

Bear in mind that success in artisan categories doesn’t necessarily equate to trophies at the Primetime ceremony. “Stranger Things,” for example, did well over the weekend but is up for only the outstanding drama statuette (and not any acting, directing or writing Emmys).

There are nonetheless new clues to consider before filling out ballots for office Emmy pools. Here are what some of the more notable wins at the Creative Arts awards might say about the Primetime Emmy telecast:

The comedy race is wide open. Last year’s winner, “Ted Lasso,” has been considered the front-runner all season, but “Barry” and “Only Murders in the Building” landed three Creative Arts Emmys, with Nathan Lane triumphing as comedy guest actor for the latter, and “Hacks” was close behind with two, including Laurie Metcalf’s victory for comedy guest actress. (“Ted Lasso” didn’t get any.) And then there’s “Abbott Elementary,” which won the casting for a comedy series trophy this year. That category has predicted the comedy series winner every year since 2015.

Does “Squid Game” have momentum? Going by its drama casting win, “Succession” is still expected to score another drama series Emmy. But “Squid Game” has become more of a contender following its four wins at the Creative Arts Emmys, including guest drama actress (Lee You-mi).

The variety talk and competition category streaks look likely to continue. If you thought “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” would end its six-year streak as outstanding variety talk show, or “RuPaul’s Drag Race” might be vulnerable after four years on top of the reality competition category, think again. “Last Week Tonight” won the writing for a variety series award again this year, a category it has dominated since 2016. And RuPaul was once again named outstanding host for a reality or competition program. That means Charles has beaten his own record for the most Emmy wins by a person of color (12 overall).

Could variety sketch be one of the few categories with a new winner? TV Academy voters weren’t big on mixing things up this year. Besides the status quo listed above, “Queer Eye” won its fifth consecutive structured reality award, and “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” won its fifth straight short form award. But variety sketch is fifty-fifty: It’s either Lorne Michaels’ “Saturday Night Live” or Robin Thede’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” Last year, “SNL” won. But this year, it could be more vulnerable. Not only did the long-running series experience its smallest number of nominations in recent years, but “A Black Lady Sketch Show” did well at the Creative Arts, picking up variety series directing (over “SNL”) and variety picture editing.

All will be revealed in less than a week. Kenan Thompson hosts this year’s Emmy telecast, which starts at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Sept. 12, live on NBC and streaming on Peacock.

“True Friends Stab You In The Front.” – Oscar Wilde

I have been looking back over the thirty years of Raindance Film Festival and our Film School. Whilst the films we have screened have seen many a dastardly deed, we at Raindance would never dream of such behaviour! We do however take great pleasure in ‘poking’ people in the right direction when it comes to their film career.

September is officially ‘Friendship Month’ and to celebrate the dictionary definition – ‘friendship, a state of enduring affection, esteem, intimacy, and trust between two people.’ – we are offering our friends old and new, the opportunity to join us in any number of ways.

Over the last thirty years, we have seen thousands of faces (many now famous) come through our doors. Some have gone onto international fame and hopefully fortune. Some have not sought the Hollywood spotlight, but preferred to indulge their passion for independent movie production and some have boosted their careers in specific elements such as acting, writing, or documenting amazing things happening in the world around us. No matter what path they have taken, after leaving Raindance… we have always remained friends.

Friends can see you through the tough times and both Raindance and our graduates have had our fair share of those. Friends can also enjoy your successes! And you only have to watch the footage of past festivals to witness the smiles on the faces of those coming back to be part of our celebrations.

What does friendship mean to you?

Someone to call on when you need a babysitter? Maybe it’s the person you go to when funds are low and you just need that few quid to get through a tight-spot. That few quid, which in reality means the world! Or is it the person who’s couch you crash on when you’ve had an argument with your partner. Is it the individual who drives miles and shows up at the hospital, when all your family who live locally, can’t make it?  Or maybe… it’s the quiet one. The one who, no matter how bad things get – never leaves your side. Sometimes actions speak louder than words.

Doing anything for thirty-years is difficult. Doing it well for thirty-years is next to impossible. So how has Raindance survived and thrived over this period of time, which has lasted longer than most marriages? With help! From friends.

Not the Government… they have been conspicuous by their absence at Raindance. The help that we’ve enjoyed over the decades has come solely from our friends. Individuals, companies, organisations and graduates. The ones who have worked through the night. The volunteers. The benefactors. The staff and the partners. The tinkers, the tailors, the soldiers and spies! (Couldn’t resist it – a great film). Raindance is not just a festival – it’s an achievement.

Juan Nepomuceno Guerra once said,

“A man is measured not by his enemies, but by his friends”. If this is true, then Raindance stands upon the shoulders of giants!
We are celebrating ‘Friendship Month’ throughout September by offering incentives to you and your friends. Come and join us. Everything in life is better when it’s shared, so bring a friend and share the experience. Share in the making of memories… and share in the fun!

Where does that leave you? And Raindance?

We really are counting on your support – and that doesn’t mean money. What is really important to Raindance, and our ability to thrive in a world that is turning upside down – is you. There are 7 different ways friends can support Raindance. to help us thrive. And more than money – it’s your time.

Time to like our social media. Time to write a review on Yell – or to like our blog post. Time to tell a friend about the disruptors at Raindance. Time to reflect on the value of independent filmmaking.

Do I sound too pompous? Would you feel like donating a few minutes of your time? Or, become a benefactor or patron of Raindance?
You could donate here. As they say at Tesco, “every little helps…’

Let’s make movies!

In flood-stricken Pakistan where an unprecedented monsoon season has killed hundreds of people, the rains now threaten a famed archeological site dating back 4,500 years, the site’s chief official said Tuesday.

The ruins of Mohenjo Daro — located in southern Sindh province near the Indus River and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are considered among the best preserved urban settlements in South Asia. They were discovered in 1922 and to this day, mystery surrounds the disappearance of its civilization, which coincided with those of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

The swelling waters of the Indus, a major river in this part of the world, have wreaked havoc as heavy rains and massive flooding unleashed devastation across much of Pakistan. At least 1,343 people have been killed and millions have lost their homes in the surging waters, with many experts blaming the unusually heavy monsoon rains on climate change.

Floods in Pakistan: Officials breach swelling lake to avert overflow

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he is flying to Pakistan on Wednesday to express solidarity with its people and “to appeal for the massive support of the international community to the Pakistanis, in this hour of need after the devastating floods that we are witnessing.” He said the floods are a result of climate change that is “supercharging the destruction of our planet,” warning: “Today it is Pakistan. Tomorrow it can be anywhere else.”

The flooding has not directly hit Mohenjo Daro but the record-breaking rains have inflicted damage on the ruins of the ancient city, said Ahsan Abbasi, the site’s curator.

“Several big walls, which were built nearly 5,000 years ago, have collapsed because of the monsoon rains,” Abbasi told The Associated Press.

He said dozens of construction workers under the supervision of archaeologists have started the repair work. Abbasi did not give an estimated cost of the damages at Mohenjo Daro.

The site’s landmark “Buddhist stupa” — a large hemispherical structure associated with worship, meditation and burial _ remains intact, Abbasi said. But the downpour has damaged some outer walls and also some larger walls separating individual rooms or chambers.

Abbasi said the civilization at Mohenjo Daro, also known as “Mound of the Dead” in the local Sindhi language, built an elaborate drainage system, which has been critical in flooding in the past.

Though the floods have touched all of Pakistan, the Sindh province has been among the worst hit.

On Monday, army engineers made a second cut into an embankment at Lake Manchar, Pakistan’s largest freshwater lake, to release rising waters in hopes of saving the nearby city of Sehwan from major flooding.

The water from the lake has already inundated dozens of nearby villages, forcing hundreds of families to leave their mudbrick homes in a hurry, many fleeing in panic.

Meanwhile, rescue operations continued Tuesday with troops and volunteers using helicopters and boats to get those stranded out of the flooded areas and to nearest relief camps. Tens of thousands of people are already living in such camps, and thousands more have taken shelter on roadsides on higher ground.

Ghulam Sabir, 52, from the outskirts of Sehwan, said Tuesday that he left his home three days ago after authorities told them to evacuate.

“I took my family members with me and came to this … safer place,” said Sabir, staying by the roadside where he has set up camp. He echoed complaints of several other villagers — that no government help had reached them yet.

Sabir said he did not know whether his home had collapsed or not.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif urged Pakistanis in televised remarks Tuesday to generously donate to flood victims, most of whom are relying on government help to survive. Sharif has also repeatedly asked the international community to send more aid to the flood victims. He insisted that Pakistan is facing a climate-change-induced tragedy.

In a statement Tuesday, the U.N. refugee agency said it handed over thousands of tents and other emergency items to the Sindh government, meant for those affected by the flooded areas in the province.

Multiple experts say that since 1959, Pakistan has emitted about 0.4 per cent of heat-trapping carbon dioxide, compared to 21.5 per cent by the United States and 16.4 per cent by China. Last week, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called on the world to stop “sleepwalking” through the crisis. He plans to visit flood-hit areas on Sept. 9.

According to Pakistani officials, Guterres will travel to Sindh but it’s unclear whether he will visit the archaeological site.

The kids are headed back to school as summer comes to a close, and celebrity kids are no exception. Chicago Bulls player, Tristan Thompson, 31, showed that he is definitely ready for the morning school drop-off routine with a rare snapshot with his son! The ex-boyfriend of Khloe Kardashian, 38, shared a sweet photo with son, Prince, 5, to his Instagram on Sept. 6, as he took his child to school.

Tristan captioned the photo, “My young King’s first day,” along with a crown, pencil, and book emojis. His loving post is a slight rarity since the father-of-four does not share photos of his kids very often. For the back-to-school snapshot, the athlete kept his look casual with black pants, a black shirt with the Supreme logo, and a black cap. Tristan also made sure to look extra stylish and paired the outfit with colorful Nikes, a silver watch, and a classic gold chain.

Prince, who is Tristan’s eldest child, also looked like he was ready to take on the first day back in class with his handsome outfit. The adorable toddler wore a white Moschino t-shirt and green shorts; however, his shoes were covered by his customized backpack. And the unique school bag might just be the best part of the father and son photo, since it had his name written on it. The iconic backpack also had images of Grogu from Star Wars – can we say backpack goals?!

While both Tristan and Prince smiled big for the photo, Tristan’s 3.7 million Instagram followers took to the comments section to gush over the milestone moment. One fan wrote, “Take it all in. The years go fast once they start school!” But some fans were wondering why the famous dad only shared a photo of Prince’s first day back in classes. A separate Instagram user wrote, “What about all the others?” It is likely that Tristan did not share the same type of photo with his other kids, as they are not yet old enough to start school.

He shares two kids with KUWTK star Khloe, including True Thompson, 4, and a newborn son, born on Aug. 5, whose name is not yet publicly known. And aside from Prince, who he shares with his ex-girlfriend, Jordan Craig, 31, he shares his eight-month-old son, Theo Thompson, with Maralee Nichols. Theo was born on December 1, 2021, and the birth revealed that Tristan had cheated on Khloe (once again) back in March 2021, while they were still together. The drama surrounding the paternity test broke on an episode of the Hulu series The Kardashians back on June 9. And while Khloe and Tristan are no longer romantically involved, they continue to co-parent both of their adorable kids together.

Khloe and her ex-boyfriend conceived their new bundle of joy back in November 2021, just weeks before he welcomed Theo with Maralee. The TV personality’s second child was conceived via a surrogate, Khloe’s rep told confirmed to HollywoodLife back in July. “We can confirm True will have a sibling who was conceived in November,” the rep said in a statement. “Khloe is incredibly grateful to the extraordinary surrogate for such a beautiful blessing. We’d like to ask for kindness and privacy so that Khloe can focus on her family.”

The Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest school district in the U.S., said it was targeted in a ransomware attack and had confirmed “an external cyberattack” on its information-technology infrastructure. Despite the disruption, the LAUSD said schools will open as scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The school district, in a notice released late Monday, said it “detected unusual activity in its Information Technology systems over the weekend” and said the incident is “likely criminal in nature.” The LAUSD said it assessing the situation with local law enforcement agencies alongside officials from the Department of Education, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

The school district did not provide details of the ransomware attack or which systems specifically were affected. On Tuesday, LAUSD said that all students and employees are required to change their passwords for @lausd.net accounts.

Visitors to the LAUSD site Tuesday were presented with a pop-up message that said, “We’re experiencing a service outage with multiple applications. Our team is currently working to restore the service. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

The LAUSD said it is “immediately establishing a plan of action, informed by top public and private sector technology and cyber security professionals, to determine additional protections for the District, and to provide an independent opinion on system-wide protective measures.”

The school district said it expected “uninterrupted instruction and staffing” for Tuesday. Ransomware is a type of cyberattack that demands that the target pay a ransom to access encrypted files that have been hijacked by an attacker.

The Los Angeles Unified School District serves more than 600,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade at more than 1,000 schools. The district also has more than 200 independently operated public charter schools, authorized by the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education. Los Angeles Unified’s boundaries stretch across 720 square miles and include the City of Los Angeles as well as all or parts of 31 municipalities and several unincorporated regions of Southern California.
