Fans of NBC’s current-season shows will no longer find them on Hulu as of next month — they’ll be flying over to NBCUniversal’s Peacock.

NBCU announced that starting Sept. 19, Peacock Premium will become the streaming home for next-day access to current seasons of NBC shows the day after they air on the network. The media conglom had clawed back the next-day rights for NBC shows from Disney-controlled Hulu, in which NBCU still owns a one-third stake, earlier this year.

NBC series that will become exclusively available on Peacock include franchises like Dick Wolf’s “Law & Order” trifecta and One Chicago (“Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.”), the network’s late-night lineup including “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night With Seth Meyers” and “Saturday Night Live,” returning series such as “La Brea,” “New Amsterdam” and “Young Rock” and competition shows including “The Voice” and “America’s Got Talent.” Also streaming exclusively on Peacock are new series bowing on NBC this fall including a reboot of “Quantum Leap” and “Lopez vs. Lopez.”

Even with the changeover in current-season streaming rights, Hulu will continue to offer many NBCU titles for several more years, including past seasons of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “This Is Us,” “The Mindy Project,” “30 Rock,” “Parenthood” and “Will & Grace.” In addition, the full NBCU live TV channel lineup — including NBC, E!, Bravo, USA and MSNBC — will still be available to Hulu + Live TV subscribers.

NBCU had already pulled Bravo next-day shows off Hulu earlier this year. Peacock Premium customers already have had next-day access to Bravo series including “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” “Below Deck,” “Top Chef,” “Southern Charm” and “Watch What Happens Live.” This fall, Bravo will air new episodes of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” “The Real Housewives of Potomac,” “Winter House” and “Below Deck Med.”

NBCU also announced a special offer through the month of September: New Peacock Premium customers will be able to sign up for just $1.99 per month or $19.99 for one year.   That’s compared with the regular Peacock Premium pricing of $4.99/month (with ads) or $9.99/month (no ads).

“We are excited to provide Peacock customers with a comprehensive destination for streaming the incredible programming airing on NBC and Bravo all year long,” Kelly Campbell, president of Peacock and NBCUniversal direct-to-consumer, said in a statement.

In the second quarter, Peacock’s paid customer based was flat for at 13 million and Peacock’s overall active accounts dropped by 1 million.

In addition to all next-day programming from NBC and Bravo, Peacock customers have access to more than 70,000 hours of original, current and classic movies and TV shows, as well as live sports, news and events. Titles on the service include fan favorites like “Yellowstone” and “The Office.” New content coming to Peacock this fall includes original series “Last Light,” “Vampire Academy,” “A Friend of the Family,” “The Calling,” “Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin” and “The Best Man: The Final Chapters.”

Movies alighting on Peacock this fall include “Jurassic World: Dominion,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.”, “Beast,” Jordan Peele’s “Nope” and “Meet Cute.” Live sports on the streamer includes “Sunday Night Football,” exclusive MLB, Premier League, WWE, IndyCar and Notre Dame football coverage and the FIFA World Cup, and much more.

The Kid Mero, who recently split up with his TV and podcast co-host Desus Nice, is making a return to audio with a Formula One live show hosted on Amazon’s live audio app, Amp.

Mero’s live simulcast show, co-hosted with the former ESPN sports reporter Michelle Beadle, is part of an overall U.S. programming and broadcast deal between Formula One and Amazon. The live F1-related programming, collectively called Fast & Loose, will launch on Aug. 28 to coincide with the Belgian Grand Prix race.

In addition to Mero and Beadle’s show, SmartLess co-host and actor Will Arnett has been tapped to lead a live, post-race show with two-time F1 world champion Mika Häkkinen and reporters Katie Osborne and Beadle, who will rotate as co-hosts with Arnett. During the show, Arnett will chat with listeners and drivers and offer his own takes on the races.

“Like many other Americans, I have recently become obsessed with Formula One. They wouldn’t let me drive the cars, so instead, I’ll be taking calls live from the sidelines,” Arnett said in a statement. “I’m so excited to start on my true path in life — sports commentary — and with some great talent beside me, we’re getting into all things Formula 1 with humor, love for the sport and, of course, some hot takes.”

Mero and Beadle’s simulcast show will launch each race day at the start of each race, while Arnett’s show will begin once the race has ended for the day. Highlights from both shows will be available on-demand on all major podcast platforms and ad-free on Wondery+ after each race weekend.

Amazon launched Amp in March as a “live radio” app, allowing users to DJ radio shows and stream songs for listeners, thanks to licensing deals with record labels like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group. The upcoming F1 programming expands the app’s foray into sports commentary, which already includes shows with analysts and broadcasters like Jalen Rose and Kate Abdo.

Amp joins an increasingly crowded live audio space that was first led by Clubhouse and followed by competitors like Twitter Spaces and Spotify Live (previously known as Spotify Greenroom).

A new power family? Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin — and their brood — are gearing up to tackle reality TV together amid the pair’s ongoing divorce.

“The Stallones are presently filming a reality show together, which will debut on Paramount+,” a rep for the Rocky star, 76, told Us Weekly on Wednesday, August 24, also confirming he had covered up his tattoo dedicated to Flavin, 54.

While further details about the upcoming docuseries have yet to be revealed, the filming news comes hours after Us confirmed the duo — who wed in 1997 — had split.

“I love my family. We are amicably and privately addressing these personal issues,” the actor’s rep told Us in a separate statement on Wednesday after Flavin’s divorce filing made headlines.

The New York native and the beauty entrepreneur tied the knot in May 1997 before they expanded their family together, welcoming daughters Sophia, Sistine and Scarlet. (The Rambo star also shares sons Sage and Seargeoh with ex-wife Sasha Czack.) Through the years, Stallone has had a tight-knit bond with his children.

“My dad has given me the advice to speak loud and clear and have great posture, don’t fall,” Scarlet, 20, previously told Us in January 2017 before she and her sisters served as Golden Globes Ambassadors at the annual ceremony. “He actually makes me train in heels for an hour every day. He doesn’t want me to fall!”

Sistine, 24, for her part, noted at the time: “Both my mom and dad said to live in this moment, cherish every second while it’s happening — it’s never going to happen again and you’re doing it with your best friends by your side. It’s something we’ll never forget and it’s so special that we got this opportunity.”

While neither Stallone nor the Serious Skincare founder have addressed how their divorce would impact the filming of the docuseries, they each hinted at their split before the court filing.

“These girls are my priority ❤️ nothing else matters. The 4 of us forever???,” Flavin wrote via Instagram on August 10, sharing a snap with her daughters.

Sophia, 25, went on to praise her mom’s strength, commenting: “You are our rock, cheerleader, and most incredible mom. We are so lucky to have you❤️ love you so much.”

The former This Is Us guest star, for his part, even covered up his bicep tattoo of Flavin’s face.

“Mr. Stallone intended to refresh the tattoo image of his wife Jennifer however the results were unsatisfactory and, unfortunately, unfixable,” his rep told Us on Wednesday. “As a result, he had to cover the original image with a tattoo of his dog from Rocky, Butkus.”

“Breaking,” Abi Damaris Corbin’s lean and heartfelt first feature, is a lackluster bank-robbery thriller with noble intentions enlivened by an impassioned performance by John Boyega and an elegiac final appearance by the late Michael K. Williams.

It’s not until well into “Breaking” that Williams, as a police negotiator, turns up. But the actor, who died last year, immediately reorients and deepens the film. As a sensitive ear to Boyega’s former Marine, who’s holed up inside an Atlanta-area Wells Fargo bank, Williams and his soulful, melancholy eyes bring a rush of empathy to the film, the white hair on his beard one last reminder of all the wise older characters the “Wire” actor might have gone on to play.

“Breaking,” which opens in theaters Friday, may go down primarily as a footnote in Williams’ career but it’s also a showcase for Boyega, an actor who, like Williams, has a powerful voice both on and off screen. He plays Brian Brown-Easley, who nervously and with little apparent plan walks into the bank and quietly informs the teller that he has a bomb.

Flashbacks fill in the tale, which comes from a true story from 2017. Disjointed scenes capture Brian’s long hours on the phone trying to get his disability check from the Department of Veteran Affairs. When he goes down to their offices and tells them he soon won’t be able to feed himself, he’s handed a pamphlet and told to take a number. It’s not until dozens of police are outside with snipers’ rifles aimed through the windows that we learn what Brian is owed: $892.34.

“Your life is worth more than that,” Williams’ police officer tells him.

“Breaking” is about how a feeling of worthlessness can push a person to the brink. Brian is only after what’s owed to him; he declines to take the bank’s money. He’s courteous to the two hostages, played by Nicole Beharie and Selenis Leyva. And, more than anything, he just wants to be heard, to not have his voice drowned out by VA bureaucracy and society’s disinterest. Inside the bank, Brian spends most of his time pleading for a negotiator to be assigned or imploring a local reporter (Connie Britton) for coverage. “Tell them about what’s happening!” he screams. As in Sidney Lumet’s “Dog Day Afternoon,” Brian’s gambit is more protest than heist.

But “Breaking,” penned by Corbin with the British playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah, struggles to mix elements on the ground with a character study into Brian’s life. Scenes over the phone with his estranged wife (Olivia Washington) and daughter (London Covington) are flat. And by the time “Breaking” creeps to its bloody climax, the movie has only made a thin sketch of its protagonist despite Boyega’s obvious dedication. Everything driving Corbin’s film is to be lauded, yet “Breaking” feels oddly lacking in drive. Brian, who clutches broken glasses throughout the film, never quite comes into focus.

“Breaking,” a Bleecker Street release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for some violent content, and strong language. Running time: 103 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

The Handmaid's Tale is set to return

Universal Pictures, Miramax, and Blumhouse’s HALLOWEEN ENDS, the final installment of the most acclaimed, revered horror franchise in film history, will debut as Peacock’s Halloween movie event Friday, October 14, day-and-date with its theatrical release.

Peacock’s Halloween Horror destination will feature more thrilling film arrivals leading into Halloween including new movies THE BLACK PHONE and BEAST coming straight from theaters along with other horror films streaming on Peacock including original film THEY/THEM from Blumhouse along with YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT, SEPARATION from director William Brent, and some of the most iconic horror franchises of all time including CHUCKY, SAW, HALLOWEEN, TREMORS, and PHANTASM, plus many more titles to be announced.

This is Laurie Strode’s last stand.

After 45 years, the most acclaimed, revered horror franchise in film history reaches its epic, terrifying conclusion as Laurie Strode faces off for the last time against the embodiment of evil, Michael Myers, in a final confrontation unlike any captured on-screen before. Only one of them will survive.

Icon Jamie Lee Curtis returns for the last time as Laurie Strode, horror’s first “final girl” and the role that launched Curtis’ career. Curtis has portrayed Laurie for more than four decades now, one of the longest actor-character pairings in cinema history. When the franchise relaunched in 2018, Halloween shattered box office records, becoming the franchise’s highest-grossing chapter and set a new record for the biggest opening weekend for a horror film starring a woman.

Four years after the events of last year’s Halloween Kills, Laurie is living with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) and is finishing writing her memoir. Michael Myers hasn’t been seen since. Laurie, after allowing the specter of Michael to determine and drive her reality for decades, has decided to liberate herself from fear and rage and embrace life. But when a young man, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell; The Hardy Boys, Virgin River), is accused of killing a boy he was babysitting, it ignites a cascade of violence and terror that will force Laurie to finally confront the evil she can’t control, once and for all.

Halloween Ends co-stars returning cast Will Patton as Officer Frank Hawkins, Kyle Richards as Lindsey Wallace and James Jude Courtney as The Shape.
From the creative team that relaunched the franchise with 2018’s Halloween and Halloween Kills, the film is directed by David Gordon Green from a screenplay by Paul Brad Logan (Manglehorn), Chris Bernier (The Driver series), Danny McBride and David Gordon Green, based on characters created by John Carpenter and Debra Hill. Halloween Ends is produced by Malek Akkad, Jason Blum and Bill Block. The executive producers are John Carpenter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, Ryan Freimann, Ryan Turek, Andrew Golov, Thom Zadra and Christopher H. Warner.

Universal Pictures, Miramax and Blumhouse present a Malek Akkad production, in association with Rough House Pictures.

Peacock announced today that starting September 19,

When Game of Thrones concluded just a few years ago, there was no doubt that it would be one of the most remembered shows on television, just not for all of the right reasons.  While the first four seasons were of legendary quality, and seasons five and six have strong highlights despite a notable dip in quality for some, it was reasonable to expect that the adaptation of “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin would have a strong enough finish.

After all, Season 6 ended with two of the best episodes in the series, despite not having any more books to adapt from, so it seemed like it would be in good hands.  However, when Season 7 came around, concerns among fans and critics started to grow.  A reduction in the number of episodes, and the odd writing of certain characters rose eyebrows.  Still, the hype for Season 8 was immense… that was until it actually released.

Courtesy of HBO

The disappointment with the finale was immense.  Critics and Fans both harped on the rushed nature of the season, with criticism aimed at the characterization and lack of depth that made the show a hit in the first place.  Since that time, Game of Thrones legacy wasn’t one of the greatest shows on television.  Rather, it became a show that started off with promise, only to squander that at the end.  As such, any excitement for a future project set in the world of Westeros would be met with hesitation.

Enter House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire and Blood”.  With the announcement of the show, there were some who were cautiously optimistic.  With George R.R. Martin’s involvement, it looked to recapture what made the first four seasons of Game of Thrones so captivating.

After it’s premiere, it is safe to say that House of the Dragon succeeds and thensome.

Courtesy of HBO

Set 172 years before Game of Thrones, the show follows the reign of the Targaryens.  A war of succession is soon to break out, as King Viserys is unable to produce a male heir, naming his firstborn daughter and only child Rhaenyra as his successor.  This, despite the fact that his brother, Daeon, is heir presumptive.  As the episode teases, this sets off a chain of events which would lead to the downfall of House Targaryen.

To begin, the callbacks to the first Season of Game of Thrones within this episode served quite a few purposes.  As many remember, the first season of Game of Thrones was similar to a political thriller, in that as a grand conspiracy is uncovered, the lives of many are put into jeopardy.  These callbacks serve two purposes; fan service, and they create a sense of unease with the audience.  The audience remembers these images and events, associating them with the events which led to the War of Five Kings.  The context now, is completely different.  Death is still in the air, but now, the biggest threat to the Targaryens, are themselves.

Matt Smith in "House of the Dragon"

Courtesy of HBO

The performances in this first episode were also stellar.  Each of the actors and actresses do a fantastic job at capturing what their characters are going through, from Viserys’ regret over the choice he made, to Rhaenyra’s longing to break free from the role given to her as a woman in this society.  The standout, however, is Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen.  While he is a fierce warrior and formidable opponent, it’s clear that there is a cunning edge to his character.  Still, it’s clear that he cares about his house and his family, but he is willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill his ambitions and take the throne.

By the end of the episode, so much is promised as to where the show can go.  This episode was certainly a love letter to the first season of Game of Thrones.  But it was more than that.  This episode plants the seeds for a show that will invoke the feelings and ideas of Game of Thrones, but will go in many unique and different directions.  It seems like it will slowly work its way to crafting its own identity.  Simply put, House of the Dragon is a promising return to deep, emotional storytelling in the world of Westeros.

When Game of Thrones concluded just a few years

DC fans can rest assured now that the “Reevesverse” is officially safe. Thanks to the deal that Matt Reeves and his 6th & Idaho production company signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. and Warner Television to expand his Batman universe. This will ensure that his company will have the right to pick anything the filmmaker comes up with in the upcoming years pertaining to all his future projects. Many were beginning to get skeptical with the complete restructure of the DC Extended Universe that resulted in many upcoming projects being cancelled. Projects such as Batgirl, which was said to be completely finished and was scrapped. Also the cancelling and removal of movies and TV shows from HBO Max. Many were beginning to wonder what was exactly going on at Warner Bros, but they seem to recognize a golden goose when they see one.

Courtesy of Los Angeles Times

This is the first major deal that has been given to the filmmaker since Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy took on the helm and were hired by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and David Zaslav to run the Warner Bros. film division. De Luca has recently stated to Deadline “We were excited to nail down his overall deal because it’s a cornerstone of what we want to do with the filmmakers that are working at the studio. We want to create an atmosphere where all of these filmmakers can excel and do their work and stay with us once they are inside the Warner’s family. Keeping Matt and creating a home for him to do more projects in the Batman universe but also originals, was very important to us.”

Many were panicking when it was announced earlier this week, that the development on another Batman project, which was an animated series called Batman: Caped Crusader, written by Reeves, J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm, and Ed Brubaker was cancelled. However it will be shopped around to other outlets to find a home. It caused confusion amongst comic fans as to what the future was going to be for all the future Batman projects including the Penguin series that is still in development and the anticipated The Batman 2 sequel. We can all now breathe a sigh of relief, that our favorite caped crusader who will played again by Robert Pattinson is returning along with Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Jayme Lawson, Paul Dano and Collin Farrell.

Reeves is said to working on the script now as we speak along with Mattson Tomlin who is no stranger to this universe and has worked previously with Reeves on The Batman. Reeves has stated to Deadline recently “Making this legendary studio my home is a dream,” Reeves said. “I am so excited to be working with Mike, Pam, and Channing Dungey and our teams to bring captivating stories I am truly passionate about to the big and small screen.” No release date has been released as of yet for The Batman 2 but we can be sure to hear something soon in the next coming year. Next for Reeves will be the Penguin show starring Colin Farrell, which is said to begin filming early next year. An Arkham Asylum show is also in development, but no further details have been given as of yet. DC fans have plenty to be excited for the future and with Reeves at the center of it, it will be sure to be a Blockbuster hit.

DC fans can rest assured now that

New adventures in the Marvel Multiverse start now! Today, Marvel announced the official role-playing game core rulebook and a new adventure book coming in Summer 2023. Both books are written by award-winning and New York Times best-selling author Matt Forbeck (The Marvel Encyclopedia, Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeonology) and feature covers by artist Iban Coello.

First, RPG players will be able to take on the roles of Marvel’s most famous Super Heroes in ‘MARVEL MULTIVERSE ROLE-PLAYING GAME: CORE RULEBOOK,’ on sale June 2023. Fully updated and expanded from the PLAYTEST RULEBOOK, which is now available, the core rulebook features all the rules that both new and seasoned players alike will need — including quick character creation, bombastic combat, and scores of amazing powers — plus full profiles of dozens of Marvel’s greatest heroes and villains. All that’s needed is the book, three standard six-sided dice, and friends!

The rule book will be followed by a brand-new adventure book on sale July 2023, ‘MARVEL MULTIVERSE ROLE-PLAYING GAME: THE CATACLYSM OF KANG.’ This book includes new character profiles and features a series of six interlocked adventures. Fans can play through with a new team or character each time or form a campaign that takes players from street-level heroes to cosmic champions!

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the volume and quality of the feedback the Narrators and players gave us on the Playtest Rulebook, and we truly took it to heart for in the core rulebook,” said the game co-designer Matt Forbeck. “We have a huge playtest update coming out soon that streamlines the game and makes it even easier to understand and play. I can’t wait for fans to try it out ahead of the full release of these books next summer!”

Both books will be available wherever graphic novels and books are sold. Stay tuned for more information on Marvel’s role-playing games.

New adventures in the Marvel Multiverse start

The Sandman which is currently the one of the most streaming shows on Netflix which has followed its August 5, 2022 premiere, has provided us with a special bonus two part episode. Anyone who has binged this in a day will be craving for more. It takes you into a world of imagination and darkness starring our Dream lord, Morpheus who is brilliantly played by Tom Sturridge who is known from the HBO series Irma Vep and the series Sweet Bitter. It captivates and draws in you like a dream right from the start. A trippy and wonderful masterpiece that will take your mind into a loop. A second Season hasn’t been officially announced but this bonus episode which is two parts equally beautiful we can be sure everyone will want it. The episode blends two magnificent retelling of stories which were the most popular tales in the original Sandman comics. The series is based off of the DC Comic The Sandman which was written by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringeberg.

The first part of the episode is called “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” which was very interesting and stylishly done adaptation of the two. This was the series first animated installment and was very well executed. It was taken from the original The Sandman Comics, #18. It was a direct adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s original script with Gaiman even himself making a vocal cameo as the Crow/Skull Bird. It perfectly coincided with the second part of the episode and deals with the series most fundamental theme which is the impermanence of reality and the unifying power of shared stories. This part of the episode showed a group of cats who teamed up with the Dream of the Endless cat to take over the world. It was directed by Hisko Hulsing who also did the Production Design as well. Playing the voices of the characters are Sandra Oh who voices The Prophet Cat, Rosie Day who voices The Tabby Kitten, David Gyasi who voices The Grey Cat, Joe Lycett who voices  The Black Cat, James McAvoy who voices the Golden-Haired Man, David Tennant who voices Don and Georgia Tennant who voices Laura Lynn, Michael Sheen who voices Paul, Anna Lundberg who voices Marion, Nonso Anozie who voices Wyvern, Diane Morgan who voices Gryphon, Tom Wu who voices the Hippogriff and lastly Dream of The Endless Cat who is voiced by Tom Sturridge.

The second part of the episode which is called “Calliope” who is played by Melissanthi Mahut. We see her as the lead character, as well as Arthur Darvill who plays Richard Madoc, Kevin Harvey who plays Larry, Amita Suman who plays Nora, Derek Jacobi who plays Erasmus Fry, Nina Wadia, Souad Faress, Dinita Gohil, reprise their roles as Fate Mother, Fate Crone, and Fate Maiden from The Sandman Series. We also see more of our Dream of the Endless, Morpheus played by Sturridge. This last part shows Calliope who has been imprisoned by Erasmus Fry and then given to Richard Madoc for inspiration. She calls out to Dream who helps her be free from the clutches of Richard. Calliope is a character from The Sandman original comics. Her origins stem from Greek mythology. A daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne, Calliope was a Muse, a goddess capable of inspiring great works of art. Calliope was one of nine Muses in Greek mythology but is heralded as the wisest of the Muses and presided over eloquence and epic poetry. As we see in The Sandman, Calliope was the mother of Orpheus and was a wife of Morpheus.  It is directed by Louise Hooper who has previously worked on Flesh and Blood. Hooper and Hulsing have previously worked on The Sandman and joined forces and directed the tenth episode.

Wednesday’s aren’t for only pink anymore, it will be for black. Just in time for spooky season, Netflix has just revealed a first look at their new series “Wednesday” which is set to release in the fall. From the brilliant and twisted mind of Tim Burton, the series will be following Wednesday who is played by Jenna Ortega, as the twisted teenage daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams. In the spinoff, Wednesday attends Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her new psychic abilities and solve a murder mystery connected to her family’s past. The other members of the Addams Family will be played by Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez and Isaac Ordonez as Wednesday’s brother Pugsley. Victor Dorobantu will be playing the disembodied hand servant, Thing, while George Burcea will be playing the servant Lurch. Gwendoline Christie will be playing a professor. Other contributing cast will be Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White, Hunter Doohan, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Naomi J Ogawa, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer and Riki Lindhome. Christina Ricci, who played the iconic role of Wednesday in the ’90s film, will also be making a special guest appearance as Marilyn Thornhill.

The series will be nothing like you have imagined and is said to be “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams years as a student at Nevermore Academy.” Burton has said this will be a completely new and horror filled perspective on all our favorite new and old characters. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will serve as co-showrunners, writers and executive producers on the series. Tim Burton will be executive producing and directing the four of the eight episodes. Gandja Monteiro and James Marshall will be serving as additional directors. Steve Stark, Andrew Mittman, Kevin Miserocchi, Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman and Gail Berman are also executive producers. “Wednesday” is produced by MGM Television for Netflix.

Check out the teaser trailer below courtesy of Netflix

The trailer shows Wednesday completely not fitting in at Nancy Reagan High School. Wednesday is seen walking into the practice pool where the swim team  is and where she sees one of the popular jocks bullying her brother. With her thirst for vengeance that can only be seen with her sinister smile saying “The only person who gets to torture my brother is me” Wednesday deadpans to the team, before unleashing two plastic bags of piranhas into their practice pool. The piranhas of course castrate the popular jock. In turn expulsion and the principal stating that she has changed schools 8 times within the last 5 years. Then we see Morticia and Gomez Addams in the car with her stating that they are going to be taking her to Nevermore Academy where they fell in love and she can be different with her own kind. This where the real fun will begin.

Snap your fingers because it will be here sooner than we know and our spooky minds can’t wait to see all that they have in store for us. The series will have eight episodes that will air during the fourth quarter of 2022.

After the success of Sony’s feature film Uncharted, Deadline dropped the news that Sony PlayStation Productions is developing a feature-length film based on Sony’s Days Gone— Oscar nominated screenwriter and producer Sheldon Turner is set to adapt the game to the screen, and according to IMDb, Scottish actor Sam Heughan has been attached as the lead, Deacon St. John.

As a former motorcycle club member, bounty hunter Deacon fights for his survival in a post-pandemic Pacific Northwest, fending off mutated humans on the way to find his wife whom he presumed was dead. The open-world game was developed by Bend Studios and released in April 2019.

In the game, there are several factions of survivors that Deacon must interact with, including the zombie-like mutated humans known as “Freakers,” a gang of cultists, called “Rippers,” and a mysterious organization, NERO. His main mode of transportation is his motorcycle; Sam Heughan received his motorcycle endorsement in 2020, making his role as an outlaw biker a fitting choice for casting.

Courtesy of Sam Heughan/Twitter

Heughan, 42, has been in several projects in addition to his lead role in the STARZ romantic drama Outlander, starring in The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018) as a MI6 agent alongside Mila Kunis, Kate McKinnon, Gillian Anderson, and Justin Theroux; ex-Navy SEAL  Jimmy Dalton in Bloodshot (2020) with Vin Diesel, Eiza González, and Guy Pearce; an SAS operative Tom Buckingham in SAS: Rise of the Black Swan (2021) based on the novel “SAS: Red Notice” by Andy McNab, starring Ruby Rose, Andy Serkis, Tom Hopper, and Hannah John-Kamen; he is playing a grieving love interest in It’s All Coming Back To Me Now (2023) with Celine Dion, Priyanka Chopra Jonas; and he recently had a role as crooked police officer Ryan in Channel 4’s Suspect.

Sheldon Turner’s credits as a screenwriter include The Longest Yard (2005), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006), Up in the Air (2009) and X-Men: First Class (2011). The screenplay for Up in the Air (2009) won 17 awards for Best Screenplay, including  a BAFTA award and a Golden Globes award in those categories. He owns a production company, Vendetta Productions, with Jennifer Klein and the company is reported to be working with Sony PlayStation Productions on Days Gone.

No other cast members have been announced yet.

After the success of Sony’s feature film Uncharted,

It was announced at the beginning of the year that the all-time favorite action drama, SEAL Team, would be returning to our screens for a sixth season.

The previous season underwent major changes as the series shifted from CBS to Paramount+ with an increased screen time beyond 48 minutes, only four episodes of season 5 were played on CBS. The rest of SEAL Team aired on Paramount+.

In addition to the move, the season ended in a cliff-hanger leaving fans with a thousand questions about how the Mali ambush would resolve. The wait is finally over as SEAL Team will be making its way back onto our screens every Sunday from next month.

SEAL Team Television series stars David Boreanaz, Max Thieriot, Neil Brown Jr., A.J. Buckley, Raffi Barsoumian, and Toni Trucks.

The military drama series showcases members of the Bravo Team, an elite unit of the Navy SEALs on and off dangerous missions. The Bravo Team is composed of Jason Hayes (Boreanaz), the team leader who carries his teammates through life-threatening situations to save their country from external harm. (Thieriot) Clay Spenser is a second-generation SEAL with the ability to speak more than one language and has immense dedication when it comes to his job. Ray Perry (Brown Jr.) is the longest-tenured operator and the trusted confidant of Hayes.

Brian Stelter signed off in his final airing of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Sunday with a message to CNN.

“I believe America needs CNN to be strong,” the CNN host said. “And they will continue to be, because all of us are going to help make that happen. The free world needs a reliable source.”

This Sunday’s show marks the final episode of the morning talk show as Stelter exits CNN in a move announced Thursday.

After nine years as a host, Stelter reflected on his time at CNN, even thanking CEO Chris Licht, who reportedly wasn’t a fan of Stelter’s opinionated on-camera style, for the “unusual” opportunity to have a final show despite after being canceled.

The CNN host put the responsibility for holding both CNN and the rest of the media industry accountable on audiences, since “we are all members of the media now.”

“But it’s going to be on you to hold CNN accountable,” he said, “and not just CNN, you got to hold your local paper accountable, you got to hold your local digital outlet accountable. It’s on all of us. We are all members of the media, all helping to make it better.”

“This show’s going away but there’s gonna be so many more; we need to have room for media criticism and debate and discussion and we will,” Stelter said. “We also must make sure we are representing the full spectrum of debate and representing what’s going on in this country and in this world.”

At the top of the hour, Stelter opened the show by noting the ongoing importance and legacy of the program, calling it one of “CNN’s highest-rated weekend shows.”

“This small but mighty show punched above its weight for so many years — even a former president commented on its cancelation,” the CNN host said. “I was lucky to be a part of it for nine years but it began 30 years ago, right after the Gulf War.”

“The thing about TV is that it’s ephemeral. It’s fleeting. It evaporates up into the air and a lot of it is not even meant to be remembered,” Stelter said. “But this program transcended that,” noting that “Reliable Sources” has been increasingly used in journalism programs and classroom lessons.

The veteran journalist used his last hour of show to focus on familiar topic: media industry. “This week, thanks to CNN management, we’ve been given the gift of signing off on our terms, and actually talking about the media industry,” he said.

During the hour, Stelter hosted a slew of journalists and news experts, including pulitzer prize-winning journalist Carl Bernstein, NPR’s Eric Deggans and Insider’s Claire Atkinson, who discussed the state of journalism in the current political landscape and beyond. Stelter’s last guest, Brian Karem, came full circle, as he was the first guest hosted by the show in 1992.

While the show’s demise involved laying off the entire staff of “Reliable Sources,” the Reliable Sources newsletter will continue led by CNN’s senior media reporter Oliver Darcy. The news of Stelter’s exit from CNN comes under four months after Licht took over as head of the company.

“It was the gift of a lifetime to get to confront these issues on international television with the backing of CNN,” Stelter concluded.

CULVER CITY, California—August 18, 2022—Today, Prime Video released the official first-look images for the upcoming limited series The English, starring Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place franchise, Sicario, Oppenheimer) and Chaske Spencer (Wild Indian, Echo). The series is a co-production with Amazon Studios and BBC. The English is a mythical Western drama, from award-winning writer and director Hugo Blick (The Honourable Woman, Black Earth Rising, The Shadow Line), about two people who come together in 1890 middle America to cross a violent landscape. All six episodes of the series will premiere exclusively in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Nordics on Prime Video in November, following its UK premiere on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.

An epic chase Western, The English takes the core themes of identity and revenge to tell a uniquely compelling parable on race, power, and love. An aristocratic Englishwoman, Lady Cornelia Locke (Blunt), and a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout, Eli Whipp (Spencer), come together in 1890 mid-America to cross a violent landscape built on dreams and blood. They must face increasingly terrifying obstacles that will test them to their limits, physically and psychologically. But as each obstacle is overcome, it draws them closer to their ultimate destination—the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming. It is here, after an investigation by the local sheriff Robert Marshall (Stephen Rea, The Shadow Line) and young widow Martha Myers (Valerie Pachner, A Hidden Life) into a series of bizarre and macabre unsolved murders, that the full extent of their intertwined history will be truly understood, and they will come face-to-face with the future they must live. ENOLA HOLMES 2 Releasing Globally on Netflix November

It’s back to 1994 in this teen horror series based on a novel of the same name by the bestselling author, Christopher Pike.

Netflix decided to treat fans with a few images of the upcoming series following the spine-chilling trailer showcased in June 2022.

The mystery thriller follows eight terminally ill teens of the midnight club who meet in the nighttime to share sinister stories and seek out signs of any supernatural happenings at the hospice they live in. A pact was made by the members stating that whoever among them was to pass on first had the duty of reaching out to the living to prove the existence of the afterlife.

Courtesy of Netflix

The cast for the YA series is composed of: Iman Benson (BlackAF); Igby Rigney; Ruth Codd; Aya Furukawa; Annarah Cymone; William Chris Sumpter, Sauriyan Sapkota; and Heather Langenkamp (Glitch) who plays the enigmatic doctor that runs the hospice.

In addition to the main cast, Matt Biedel, Zach Gilford (Midnight Mass), Samantha Sloyan (Midnight Mass), and William B. Davis (The X-Files) have recurring roles in the adaptation of Christopher Pike’s novel.

The ten-episode series, each part airing for an hour, is created by Mike Flanagan, and Leah Fong who serve as part of the executive producers alongside Trevor Macy, Julia Bicknell, and the novelist himself, Christopher Pike.

This is the fourth series Flanagan and Macy have done together at Netflix under their Intrepid Pictures overall deal.

Besides The Midnight Club, other iconic works of Pike set to feature in the series are Witch, Gimme A Kiss, Road To Nowhere, and The Wicked Heart. Other titles will be revealed soon.

The Midnight Club is set to air on Netflix on October 7, 2022.

After many months of controversy surrounding their behavior, now controversial actor Ezra Miller finally apologized for their actions on August 16.  Miller stated, “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment.  I want to apologize to everyone that I have been alarmed and upset with my past behavior.  I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”  While it may be true that Miller is indeed, hopefully, receiving the treatment he desperately needs, many fans and outlets have been quick to call out that this apology was more than likely pushed by Warner Bros. Discovery.

Credit to Warner Bros.

After the cancellation of Batgirl and various other productions under new CEO David Zaslov, many people were left wondering what the fate of the 2023 movie The Flash would be.  After all, Batgirl was cancelled as a tax writeoff after quality concerns, despite the film being entirely shot.  Although the move was controversial, from a business perspective, it makes sense to cancel this film.  If the quality of the film is subpar, then the DCEU would only take another hit as the company tries to steer the ship in the right direction.  Given the smaller budget of this film, the safe option would be to take the tax writeoff and minimize any losses.  The Flash, however, doesn’t quite have the same luxury.  While it’s been reported that test screenings for the 2023 film were less than stellar, reports of many reshoots taking place this year have indicated the film to be heavily altered from it’s current state, despite a complete production.  Combine this with the excessive number of delays, a star-studded cast, an opportunity to redirect the DCEU given the time-travelling nature of the film, and this project is currently holding a budget of over $200 million, cancelling the film would still result in heavy losses than if they were to simply release it and recouperate something.

This left WBD with reportedly three options.  Option 1, have Ezra Miller apologize for their behavior and seek out therapy, and continue with the release of the film.  Option 2, cut Ezra Miller from any and all marketing for The Flash, and release it quietly on HBO Max.  Finally, Option 3, cancel the release of the film all together.  Given the timing of these reports coming out, it comes as little surprise that Option 1 is what they have selected.  And while this may be an attempt to garner back good will for The Flash, it seems many are seeing through the play and it is instead backfiring on WBD.

Courtesy of Flightrisk/BACKGRID

Already, their are rumblings that the executive board at WBD will overrule Zaslov’s decision, and opt for cancelling the film, as many fans have pushed back against Miller’s apology and WBD for still keeping Miller and The Flash on their slate.  It’s perhaps for this reason, that cancelling the film and cutting ties with Miller, while financially damaging in the short-term, may actually prove more beneficial for WBD and the DCEU in the long term.  Given this film has had arguably a worse production history than any other DC film, with the possible exception of Justice League and the superior Snyder Cut.  With the upcoming Black Adam film promised to be a cornerstone for DC in terms of the direction they will take for the next ten years, focusing more on that character and building him up to become a threat to many of the existing DCEU characters would be a smart move, something that would undoubtedly become complicated with The Flash’s rumored plot point on changing the timeline and recasting many of the existing characters.

In addition, it would help garner back the good will the company desperately needs, following the controversies with Amber Heard and the cancelation of Batgirl and other films.  It may well be a shaky path, and they may stumble, but if it means they can run free of any controversy in future, then it’s perhaps the best chance WBD has at restoring good faith, and making the DCEU something to be reckoned with.

After many months of controversy surrounding their

It’s back to the Hunger Games in the prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games franchise).

A first glimpse of the upcoming film brandishing the lead characters looking cozy under a tree was released on social media with a rather teasing caption: “Sneaky peak at our inconspicuous little movie about 2 totally chill birdwatchers with no emotional damage whatsoever…”

Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games prequel will be set 64 years before the franchise’s timeline, in a post-war Capitol following a young President Snow before his tyrannical reign.

The role of the future cunning ruler is portrayed by Tim Blyth (Benediction). 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is tasked with mentoring Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from the same District as the infamous franchise female lead, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the poverty-stricken 12th District.

Even as a young man Coriolanus is quick in the mind as he sees an opportunity for possible success when Baird stuns the whole of Panem by singing at the reaping ceremony. Side by side they take on whatever challenges come their way with their combined skills.

Only at the end of it all will it be known who is in fact the songbird, and who is the snake.

In addition to Blyth and Zegler, Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder) was recently revealed as Dr. Volumnia Gaul the Head  Gamemaker of the 10th annual Hunger Games.

Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) will be enacting the role of the Dean of the Academy and co-creator of the games, Hunter Schafer will take on the role of Tigris Snow, the cousin of Coriolanus and trusted adviser, and Jason  Schwartzman will star as Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman the forthcoming games television host.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is produced by Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Francis Lawrence.  Suzanne Collins has a seat on the executive producers’ panel alongside Tim Palen and Mika Saito.

The Hunger Games installment is scheduled for release on November 17, 2023.

It's back to the Hunger Games in

As actors ponder their Emmy acceptance speeches for September 12, one wonders whether some incipient Adrian Lester envy might creep into their thoughts. Lester, the Black British actor, won a Tony nomination for playing both a German Jewish banker and a female character in The Lehman Trilogy on Broadway. At the Emmys, actors like Jennifer Coolidge and Steve Martin will likely win kudos for essentially playing themselves, with great aplomb.

I empathize with the tensions facing actors today: They covet the opportunity to display their “range” but also understand the risks inherent in boundary crossing. Even Tom Hanks expresses regret for depicting a gay protagonist in 1993’s Philadelphia, and James Franco is catching it for playing Fidel Castro.

The woke-phobic Bill Maher raged this week against critics of Helen Mirren for portraying Golda Meir, but some still rail on Mickey Rooney for Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

But type-casting, or resistance to it, is just one of an array of problems confronting the acting profession at the moment. There’s rising tension around the Byzantine formulas for compensating actors as the income gap between rich and poor continues to broaden. Negotiators for all the arts and crafts are combat-ready for upcoming meetings.

In movies, star casting was losing out to dreaded IP at Marvel and other citadels of culture until smart producers decided to bring Jamie Lee Curtis back to Halloween and Michael Keaton to Batman. Determined producers of the Star Wars cycle even renewed their pursuit of the famously grumpy Harrison Ford (2018’s Solo bombed without him).

2022-23 Awards Season Calendar – Dates For The Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Guilds, Festivals & More

If you believe the numbers being tossed around, acting is still richly rewarding at the top end with Brad Pitt recently scoring a $30 million payout and Ryan Reynolds $20 million; TV payouts per episode have reached $1 million for Jason Sudeikis and $750,000 for Brie Larson.

On the other hand, Covid increasingly has played havoc with many careers, posing obstacles in terms of timing and location. A Squid Game performer can pre-plan his shoots, but the Mrs. Maisel cast found themselves shooting all-nighters in Carnegie Hall.

Ditto stage stars. Roger Bart (yes, progeny) found himself in a holding pattern for almost two years as the musical Back to the Future almost faded back to the past (it is now a mega-hit in London with Broadway slated for the fall).

Virus-era vicissitudes are also well documented in this season’s pre-Emmy interviews. Toni Collette (The Staircase) describes the stress of shooting three fatal scenes back to back in one evening. Zendaya explains that she felt “locked in my shell”.

Steve Martin, at 75, discloses his joy over the exuberant ratings and reviews for Murder in the Apartment: “My movies never got appreciated until twenty years later.”

Having survived the obstacle course, the bottom line is that Hollywood now employs a record number of actors in a record number of shows – a range of opportunity that would have startled the alumni of the Actors Studio era when they invaded Hollywood in the late ’40s and ’50s.

A new book titled The Method by Isaac Butler describes the culture shock of that generation (Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Elia Kazan et al) who, as students of acting in New York, were appalled by the “complacency and shallowness” of their West Coast colleagues.

Champions of The Method trace their technique back to Konstantin Stanislavski, co founder of the Moscow Art Theater (he died in 1938). Some of the early Method actors unexpectedly found fame in Hollywood, but hard-liners decided to take refuge back on Broadway, fostering hits like Clifford Odets’ Golden Boy.

Butler’s book reminds us that the tension between philosophies has re-occurred over the generations. On Marathon Man, Dustin Hoffman proudly told his co-star, Sir Laurence Olivier, that he’d captured his character’s fatigue by jogging all night to prepare his scene. An exasperated Oliver replied, “My dear boy, why don’t you try acting?” (It took an entire day to shoot the short scene.)

To Butler, a professor at the New School, audiences today are too distracted by the action and special effects of tentpole movies to assimilate the subtleties of performance. Hence actors like Adrian Lester seek their plaudits on stage in intimate plays like The Lehman Trilogy (it had a cast of three).

But they’ll just have to forgo their Emmys.

CINEQUEST FILM FESTIVAL 2022 REVIEW! The genre-bending and exquisite Medusa, from Brazilian auteur Anita Rocha da Silveira, is Suspiria combined with Jesus Camp. Mari (Mari Oliveira) is a high-standing member of a fundamentalist Christian community in Brazil. She is one of the singers in the Christian musical group Michelle and her Treasures from the Lord. They do elaborate performances for the church, such as a version of “House of the Rising Sun” with the lyrics reworked to reflect the joys of housewives submitting to their husbands. Mari’s best friend, Michelle (Lara Tremouroux), is a social influencer with videos like “How to take the perfect Christian selfie.”

At night, the two friends don white doll-like masks with other group members and savagely beat up girls in the streets for being sinful. After they throw a boot party on their victims, they force them to make recorded pledges to Jesus, which are posted on social media for likes. This tradition started long ago when a wild young woman from the town, Melissa (Bruna Lizmeyer), appeared in an art film where she did a nude scene.

Prompted by the sinful behavior on display, an unknown woman, described as an avenging angel with a white mask and gas can, sets Melissa’s face on fire in the name of purification. The actor disappeared after that, with television specials speculating on what happened to her. While the girls of the community hunt down home wreckers and feminists to brutalize, their church has a male counterpart group, the Vigilantes of Zion, who put homosexuals into comas.

One night, a victim fights back and cuts Mari’s face with a broken bottle. This tarnish on her appearance causes her to get fired from her job at a plastic surgery clinic. Her disfigurement causes an obsession with tracking down Melissa. Mari’s search leads her to get a job in a hospital for coma patients, where she is teamed up with the cute, worldly Lucas (Felipe Frazao). Then, Mari discovers a basement where a woman with a white mask has been in a coma for decades.

“…Mari discovers a basement where a woman with a white mask has been in a coma for decades.”

Medusa is a homage to the creative peaks of Dario Argento. It deliberately utilizes his ultra-neon visual style as well as the throbbing rock scores originated by the Italian band Goblin. The film opens with a candy-colored contortionist ballerina sequence that screams spaghetti horror. There are several direct references to specific scenes in Argento’s work, including the infamous dialogue about how women whose names begin with S are snakes from Suspiria. Only da Silveira makes the letter be M. The filmmaker manages to capture the essence of Argento’s unique cinematic power, such as his famous hallway tracking shots and surreal lighting of his cast.

Ironically, these stylistic sequences were usually cut from the American releases, all in the name of pacing issues that didn’t exist. Argento abandoned a lot of his signature style in his later work due to budgetary constraints and, perhaps, talent deterioration. So da Silveira resurrecting this distinct style for her feminist deconstruction of violent fundamentalism is most welcomed. It is eerie how smoothly Argento’s kaleidoscope colors meld into the lighting for a megachurch sermon.

The format and intentions of Medusa are pure art house, using the horror elements to reinforce the high aspirations of the social critique. I have felt for years the horror genre has this potential to make art films, just like directors like Fassbinder and Almodovar made art out of the vocabulary of Sirk’s 50s melodramas. Anita Rocha da Silveira even utilizes an animal mask element as a symbol of worldly social temptation. This harkens back to several horror classics from The Nude Vampire all the way to the comparatively recent You’re Next.

Medusa is an electrifying work of art that elevates its already elevated pop influences, a transcendental tableau of the true-life horror of female oppression.

CINEQUEST FILM FESTIVAL 2022 REVIEW! The genre-bending

It’s a common story line: a tough guy who can kick butt gets stuck with a ditsy partner. The two hate each other at first but then begin to develop a relationship and end up working together in the end. This type of storyline appears in hundreds of films from the 80s and 90s. So how do you refresh this type of arc while keeping fans interested? Somehow, Netflix was able to do it with their new action comedy, Day Shift.

Courtesy of Netflix

First time feature film director, J. J. Perry, took on the task to bring a story with vampires, hunters, action, and comedy to life. Perry who has spent his career as a stunt man, second camera man, and actor said it felt like it was the perfect time for him to try directing.  Perry chose to direct Day Shift, released on Netflix due to the script and the actors.

Due to his background, Perry was able to bring a fresh film that is full of fast paced action sequences, long shots of fight scenes, and the time and space for the actors to have comedic moments. Perry worked hard to take this story and turn it into a cheerful movie with a nice refreshing storyline. While at times, it might be somewhat predictable, the movie does a great job of putting you into the action.

Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) is a solo vampire hunter that is working hard to make some money as he faces financial trouble. We learn pretty quickly that Jablonski is one of many hunters in the area that work within a union. However, Jablonski was kicked out for numerous violations of the union’s code. However, when Bud faces increasing financial pressure from his ex-wife (Meagan Good) who needs more money and wants to move her daughter (Zion Broadnax) to another city (making money from selling their house), Jablonski must drag his feet back to the union to beg to get in, so he can hunt more vampires (the more you hunt, the more money you make). We should also mention that Jablonski hides his career from everyone including his family which has not helped his personal life either. However, no one knows what type of fighting he is about to face or what partner he ends up getting stuck with.

Courtesy of Netflix

“Day Shift” does not pretend to be original. There is not a single element in this movie that cannot be found in a well-known horror or action movie. However, the references in this film, gives homage to Perry’s love of horror and action movies. The cast does a great job of inserting humor, which never feels forced. The monsters are given good storylines that blur between reality and fantasy. This film doesn’t rely much on CGI (its there) but Perry relied heavily on what his crew could do on site. Remember, this film was made in a super short time and during COVID. Perry said everyone that stepped on set gave it there all while never complaining or saying no.

Courtesy of Netflix

Perry created fighting vampires that are half bad ass and half gymnasts. Taking pieces of past horror films, you find the vampires walking on their hands, unnaturally arching bodies into crazy formations, and incredibly skilled. Not to mention, they are unbelievably hard to kill.

However, do not count out the hunters which seemed to develop all sorts of creative ways to fight them. This includes everything from boots with built-in blades, crazy guns, and even garlic gum. Trust, you will know what we mean when you see it, in what one could argue is one of the best scenes of the film. It often looks comical, but that’s the way it’s meant to be — after all, it’s not the time to seriously show sparring with evil spirits.

Courtesy of Netflix

As previously mentioned, Foxx does get a partner in the film, played by Dave Franco. Franco brings the humor, the charm, and the vulnerability that helps us as viewers relate as we enter this world.  Karla Souza, who plays the main villain in this film, wears some of the best costumes and jewelry in the film. She is gorgeous and they take her vampire look to the next level. Peter Stormare and Oliver Masucci, whom everyone knows from “Darkness” add so much to their scenes that their lack of scenes becomes irrelevant.

Courtesy of Netflix

But perhaps one of the best finds of the “Day Shift” is Snoop Dogg. His charisma and energy coming from the screen is impressive. Every time you see Snoop in the film he steals the scene. It’s hard for anyone to really go toe to toe with him. He is funny, serious, and a true legend. It was such a delight to see Foxx and Snoop on screen together. It also reminded us that Snoop (who is a legend in his own right as a musician) can act and should be on screen WAY more than he is now.

“Day Shift” will definitely appeal to everyone who is nostalgic for “Blade” and other fun films of the time. It tells the story but is light, funny, and goes by quick. This film is a celebration for fans of the genre and a perfect example of unusual, tasteful projects that Netflix should invest in the future.

Usually they say your luck runs out, but that is not the case for Johnny Depp. It’s only wins for him from hereon out since he was awarded $10 million in damages following his months-long court battle with his ex-wife,. With just shy over a week ago where we just got our first look of him dressed as King Louis XV in Maïwenn’s film Jeanne du Barry, he will also be getting his hands back into directing. Depp hasn’t directed a movie in well over 25 years ago. His last film where he made his directorial debut was in 1997 called “The Brave,” in which he starred alongside Marlon Brando. He has also produced several movies including “Hugo,” “The Lone Ranger” and “Minimat”. The thespian will now return behind the camera for “Modigliani,” which is a biographical drama about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Al Pacino will also be producing the film along with Barry Navidi. With the help of the European production company Infinitum Nihil, who is backing the film. The film also marks another collaboration between Pacino and Navidi, who have worked side by side together over the years in “The Merchant Of Venice” in 2004, “Wilde Salomé” in 2011 and “Salomé” in 2013.

The film itself will be based on Dennis McIntyre’s play Modigliani: A Play in Three Acts and adapting into screen will be Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski. “Modigliani” takes place in 1916 Paris and tells the story of the Italian-born painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. According to the film’s release, Modigliani, “long considered by himself a critical and commercial failure, navigates a turbulent and eventful 48 hours that will become a turning point in his life, ultimately solidifying his reputation as an artistic legend.” “The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored, and truly humbled, to bring to the screen,” Depp said recently in a statement. “It was a life of great hardship, but eventual triumph, a universally human story all viewers can identify with.”

The film is among Depp’s latest effort to jumpstart his career in the wake of his highly publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. The jury found that Heard had defamed Depp in her 2018 Washington Post opinion piece, which is where she alluded to being a victim of domestic violence. However, the jury also found that Depp defamed Heard, through his attorney, while fighting back against her charges.

After several years of being a pariah in Hollywood, it seems that Depp is coming back with a vengeance tenfold and it is well deserved with all that he has overcame. We are excited and thrilled to see him to get back to the world of creating and his fans couldn’t be more delighted. Those that have been patiently waiting for updates are sure to be in for several surprises in the coming weeks and months.

No release date has been set for this film but be sure to look up for more updates and cast announcements within the next several months.

Apple’s sweeping changes to its privacy rules are reportedly having a negative impact on some small businesses.

Introduced in iOS 14.5, the company’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) feature gave users the option of opting out of app tracking across third-party apps and websites, which would then stop these apps from serving targeted ads to customers.

This caused a 13% dip in revenue in Q2, 2022 for companies that relied on these targeted mobile ads to acquire new customers, according to data from software firm Varos which surveyed over 1,300 businesses.

How does the feature work?

Before the feature’s introduction app developers and publishers gained access to large amounts of users’ data.

Though this could be used for legitimate ends to make apps work better, for example, by providing location-based suggestions it also allowed publishers and advertisers to sell user data to 3rd parties.

The introduction of ATT hasn’t been without controversy, however. Apple is currently facing an antitrust lawsuit in Germany, with Germany’s Federal Cartel Office, the Bundeskartellamt, investigating whether the introduction of the new rules is self-preferencing.

However, a report commissioned by Apple (opens in new tab) (perhaps unsurprisingly) found it hasn’t received a windfall under the new rules.

The report found that, “Apple is unlikely to have significantly benefitted from ATT because Apple Search Ads is a small part of the overall mobile advertising market, and because displaced advertising spending could move to many other companies that effectively leverage first-party data for advertising.”

Apple’s changes to how its products share data may have had wider impacts on the industry as a whole.

Google has said it will remove third-party cookies from Chrome by the end of 2023.

Interested in changing your settings?

If you’d like to change how your iPhone tracks your data you can head to the “Settings” app and then tap on “Privacy”.

You can then go to “Tracking”, which is at top of the screen, and you’ll then be able to disable or enable tracking for any of your apps individually.

On the 12th of August,  Ahmed Salman Rushdie was brutally attacked at an event in New York. The Novelist was on stage preparing for his lecture when a 24-year-old New Jersey man rushed to the platform and stabbed him in the neck and abdomen, injuring him severely.

The incident took place on Friday morning at the Chautauqua center where Mr. Rushdie was set to discuss how the United States is a safe place for writers that have been exiled. But he was attacked before he could even give his points in the scheduled event.

The Indian-born author was assisted by members of the audience, one of them happened to be a physician who performed first aid on him before he was airlifted from the education center and taken to an area hospital where he underwent immediate surgery.

At the time Mr. Rushdie’s health status was unknown, until later that evening when his agent, Andrew Wylie, sent an emailed update to The New York Times stating that his health was not at all good. The 75-year-old is said to have been placed on a ventilator and suffered wounds to his eye, severed nerves in his arm, and a damaged liver.

Ralph Henry Reese, the event’s moderator who was onstage with Mr. Rushdie when he got attacked sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital in the afternoon.

The attacker identified as Hadi Matar was taken into custody and very little has been revealed about his motives.

Story is still developing.

On Friday, August 12th, 2022, Anne Celeste Heche, 53, passed away due to injuries sustained following a car crash that occurred in the Mar Vista neighborhood on August 5th. Though she is legally deceased, she remains on life support measures for organ donation.

She is survived by her sons, Homer and Atlas, her sister, Abigail Heche, and her mother (whom she previously mentioned being estranged from) Nancy Heche.

The actress and advocate began her career in 1987 when she secured a role on the daytime soap “Another World” (1987)— Disney’s “The Adventures of Huck Finn” (1993), “If These Walls Could Talk” (1996), “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997), Volcano (1997), “Psycho”(1998), “Prozac Nation” (1998), and “My Friend Dahmer” (2017).

She is known for her public relationship with Ellen DeGeneres, which lasted from 1997 to 2000. She became more of an interest to the media during this relationship, since it was not common for same-sex celebrity couples to be out in the public eye.

According to Insider, “Heche in interviews and podcast appearances often recounted the story of the premiere for her 1997 film ‘Volcano.’

‘I was told by Fox Studio executives that if I brought Ellen to the premiere, my contract would be terminated,’ she told Mr. Warburton. ‘I brought Ellen despite those threats, and we were escorted out of the theater before the lights came on by security and not allowed to attend the premiere party because they did not want any photos of us together.’”

“You Might Know Her From” podcast said she was the first leading actor to bring a same-sex partner to a premiere, and as a result, didn’t make another studio picture for ten years after the premiere.

She also wrote a memoir in 2001, “Call Me Crazy,” and started a podcast in 2020, “Better  Together,” with her friend Heather Duffy. She talks about her childhood and her struggles with her mental health, and Larry King described her memoir as “honest and outspoken” in an interview with the actress.

“I am left with a deep, wordless sadness,” wrote Heche’s son with Lafoon, Homer, in a statement shared with NPR via Baird. “Hopefully my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom.”

Timothee Chalamet has been something of a rising star in the entertainment industry recently.  Although he’s done acting in tevelsion and film since 2009, it was with 2021’s Dune that he came into the mainstream spotlight, taking on the role of the main character Paul Atreides, a role he is set to return to in Dune: Part Two.  In addition, he is set to play a young Willy Wonka in Wonka, a musical film detailing the character’s rise before opening his world famous chocolate factory.  Before that is set to come out though, this year he will be joining Canadian actress Taylor Russell in a romance film with a dark, cannibalistic twist; Bones & All.  Prior to this project, Russell received praise in the acclaimed drama Waves(2019), Words on Bathroom Walls(2020), and her appearance in the Escape Room series of horror films.

Based on a book of the same name by Camille DeAngelis, the story follows two teenage cannibals, Maren Yearly(Russell) and Lee(Chalamet) who fall in love with one another, as they journey together throughout America during the Reagan Administration.  The original book tackled themes of feminism, loneliness, self-loathing, and of course, cannibalism and the moral implications it carries.  The film is expected to carry over many of these themes, with director Luca Guadagnino stating the film is, ‘a very romantic story, about the impossibility of love and yet, the need for it.  Even in extreme circumstances.’

Guadagnino has been known for his work on the films The Protagonists, I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, and Suspiria.  The director previously worked with Chalamet on his 2017 film, Call Me by Your Name, another novel adaptation, this time by Andre Aciman.  The novel follows the relationship between Chalamet’s Elio Perlman and Armie Hammer’s Oliver.  The film would go on to become a critical success, even receiving the nomination for Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards.  Guadagnino is no stranger to romance films and psychological thrillers, so a project like Bones & All seems like a perfect match for the ideas of this director.

Joining the cast will be Mark Rylance, Michael Stuhlbarg, Andre Holland, Jessica Harper, Chloe Sevigny, Francesca Scorsese, David Gordon Green, Anna Cobb, Jake Horowitz, and Kendle Coffey as the character Sherry.  The screenplay was written by David Kajganich, a frequent colaborator with Guadagnino.  Handling the music will be Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.  The film is set to have a 2 hour 10 minute runtime, and will see its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in September, with a US release set for November 23.

NEW YORK, NY – August 10, 2022 – IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to THE LOST KING ahead of its World Premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival. THE LOST KING reunites the Oscar nominated and BAFTA winning creative team behind box office and critical hit, PHILOMENA – director Stephen Frears and writers Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope. The film stars Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winning actress Sally Hawkins (THE SHAPE OF WATER) in the lead role of Philippa Langley, alongside Steve Coogan (PHILOMENA, THE TRIP SERIES) in the role of Philippa’s husband, John Langley. The film is produced by Steve Coogan with Christine Langan (THE QUEEN) and Dan Winch (A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL) and is a Baby Cow production for Pathé, BBC Film, Ingenious Media and Screen Scotland. Executive Producers are Cameron McCracken and Jenny Borgars for Pathé; Rose Garnett for BBC Film; Andrea Scarso for Ingenious; Jeff Pope and Philippa Langley. The film was Co-produced by Wendy Griffin.

THE LOST KING tells the remarkable true story of amateur historian Philippa Langley played by Sally Hawkins, who was behind the real life discovery of King Richard III in 2012 after the remains had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching and searching for the remains, in spite of skepticism from friends, family and academics. The film is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history.

Of the acquisition, Director Stephen Frears said, “I’m delighted that THE LOST KING has found a home in North America with IFC Films. It was hugely enjoyable to work again with Steve and Jeff and we were blessed with an incredible performance from Sally. Toronto is always special and now we have IFC at our side”.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “We are delighted to collaborate with the exceptional creative team behind THE LOST KING. Stephen, Steve and Jeff and our friends at Pathe have brought the astounding story of Philippa Langley to life and Sally Hawkins has added another brilliant performance to her resume. We can’t wait to have the world premiere with our amazing friends at Toronto this year in person, on a big screen.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Head of Acquisitions and Production Scott Shooman with Cameron McCracken , Managing Director, Pathe UK on behalf of the filmmakers.

NEW YORK, NY - August 10, 2022

For quite some time, Ezra Miller has been the center of attention, for all of the wrong reasons.  Facing many accusations and legal troubles, with many reports of troublesome behavior from around the world; with multiple arrests, charges, and allegations of assault and grooming. Now, Miller once again found themselves facing legal troubles, as the Vermont State Police have charged Miller with felony burglary.

It seems like almost everyday, new information comes out about Miller, information that only paints the actor and the companies that work with them in a worse light.  Among these companies, has been Warner Bros. Discovery.

To say the company finds itself in a difficult position thanks to Miller would be an understatement.  Given the major role the actor plays in The Flash, scheduled to release in 2023, the new management at the recently formed Warner Bros. Discovery finds themselves facing a difficult decision with what to do with this film, one which has reportedly faced many behind the scenes issues and has a budget the size of 2017’s Justice League behind it.

It’s because of this, as well as the cancellation of Batgirl, that many people believe The Flash will face the same fate of cancellation, although it would be a much harder hit for the company.  Compared to the upcoming tentpole film, Batgirl had a far smaller budget, and was set to only see release on HBO Max, rather than a theatrical release.  Combined with concerns of the film’s quality, Warner Bros. Discovery cancelled the film and made a tax write-off, minimizing their losses.

Leslie Grace Batgirl

The decision was certainly a controversial move, especially given the film was essentially complete, (much like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, before it was heavily reworked into the inferior 2017 cut).  It’s only drawn even more ire from fans and audiences, as many took issue with the company cancelling the film that had little to no controversy prior to its cancellation, while The Flash lives on, and was even scheduled to have reshoots with Miller recently, in the midst of their legal troubles.  Notably, Kevin Smith would go on to state, ‘I don’t give a shit how bad the Batgirl movie is, nobody in that movie is complicated or has anything in their real life you have to market around.  In The Flash movie, we all know there’s a big problem!  Flash is the Reverse Flash in real life.”

Despite comments by new CEO David Zaslov stating confidence in the upcoming slate of DC Films, including The Flash, a piece by The Hollywood Reported stated that the company is now discussing three possible options for film following Miller’s trouble in Vermont.  First, Miller could seek therapy and Warner Bros. Discovery moves forward with the film’s release; two, The Flash is released as planned, but Miller would be recast moving forward; three, the film meets the same fate as Batgirl.  The only way this third film may happen, however, would only be if controversy continues to follow Miller, and the backlash becomes too great, that Warner Bros. Discovery is left with no choice but to shelve the film.

Credit to Warner Bros.

Financially, shelving The Flash wouldn’t save nearly as much money as Batgirl, and likely would result in heavy financial losses short term.  But given David Zaslov’s emphasis on looking at DC Films in the long run, it may actually be beneficial in the long run to lay this film to rest and recast Miller.  While Batgirl certainly faced some ire with fans, largely over the fact that this character would get a stand-alone film before Ben Affleck’s Batman, The Flash has seen ire from all sides of the DC fandom.  Prior to the escalation of controversies with Miller, fans of Snyder’s vision of the DC Universe were irritated when rumors and reports indicated that the movie would go out of it’s way to essentially retcon Snyder’s movies.  Likewise, DC fans in general were angered that it seemed like the film would replace Henry Cavill’s Superman and kill off Ben Affleck’s Batman, replacing them both with Sasha Calle’s Supergirl and Michael Keaton’s Batman.  Now, with Miller’s controversies and involvement in the film, practically everyone is against The Flash seeing the light of day.

For now, The Flash is still set to release in June 2023, but should Miller continue their troublesome behavior, and fan outcry continues to grow, it may find itself joining Batgirl in the film graveyard that Warner Bros. Discovery has been making.

Bill Maher cut his critics off at the pass Friday night, certain that they’d once again label him an Islamaphobic for pointing out that Salman Rushdie had every reason to be afraid of the “dangerous” religion.

“A good friend of this show got stabbed today, Sal Rushdie,” Maher began the roundtable chat. “He was stabbed by someone named Hadi Matar. We don’t know the motivation yet, but Sal did have some enemies in the past, as I recall. So I’m guessing Hadi is not Amish.”

Rushdie — who has been a target of the Islamic world since the publication in 1988 of “The Satanic Verses” because many see it as a blasphemous depiction of Muhammad – was about to deliver a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York State, when a man rushed the staged and stabbed him at least twice, once in the neck. As of this publishing, the writer is on a ventilator and unable to speak, with his agent saying he “will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.”

The attack on Rushdie moved Maher to both sadness and anger.

“He was giving a lecture — how about this for irony? — about how the U.S. is a safe haven for exiled writers and other artists under threat of persecution. And making that speech itself is unthinkable in most Muslim countries Salman Rushdie living in most Muslim countries without getting stabbed every day is unthinkable. So don’t come at me with Islamophobic,” a fired-up Maher said.

“Phobic means fear, right? Well, Sal had a good reason to be fearful. And when you say phobic, it’s just a way to shut off debate,” he continued. “We should have a debate about this, sorry, but you know, these things don’t go away. Islam is still a much more fundamentalist religion than any of the other religions in the world. And that means they take what’s in the holy book seriously. And that has been dangerous for a long time. It’s still dangerous.”

The whole topic of free speech came to the forefront of the roundtable, with panelist Piers Morgan quoting Rushdie. “I want to draw your attention to a quote from Salman Rushdie. The defense of free speech begins at the point when people say something you can’t stand, you often have to defend people you find outrageous, unpleasant and disgusting. And that’s the point.”

Morgan went on: “I think that people have forgotten in this debate about free speech, which is, it’s not about the right of people you agree with to say what they like, and then you’re not alone. It’s about your ability to listen to people whose opinions you might staunchly disagree with. You might hate their opinions. You might hate them, but you should be able to tolerate their right to have a different opinion.”

You can see the conversation in the video at the top.

Under the late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Iranian government issued a fatwā in 1989 calling for Rushdie’s death and put a $3 million bounty on his head. Rushdie went into hiding via a protective government program in the U.K. before slowly reemerging a decade later. His 2012 memoir, “Joseph Anton,” charted his life with the fatwā. Today’s Iranian government has distanced itself from Khomeini’s treatment of Rushdie, but resentment and the threat of violence has remained a constant.

Fantasy novels and dramas invoke the magic within, daring fans to dream the impossible. Such dreams, however, were limited to men for a long time. Women had a hard time shaking hands with fantasy tropes. Humanity, however, has progressed a lot, and series like Netflix’s The Witcher portray some of the most powerful women. But they are still confined within the power domain of a male-centric society. And such a rendering of women characters immediately reminds us of Shakespeare’s absolute beauty, Macbeth.

Though it maneuvers the horrendous tragedy of King Duncan’s death, Shakespeare explores the possibilities of how a single external suggestion can trigger our psyche. It spurs us on to perform deeds that wouldn’t have been otherwise possible. The play also uses supernatural elements to represent the most shadowy, obscure, and lawless part of human nature. If through Lady Macbeth, readers get an idea of ruthlessness. The three witches Shakespeare created are very much a representation of older women devoid of prestige. Don’t you think they very much resemble some of the prominent characters of The Witcher?

Yennefer is Lady Macbeth of The Witcher world

Yennefer of Vengerberg was an obscure, deformed, poor girl whose father traded her for four marks to the world of witchers and mazes. Such was the condition of societal misogyny during medieval times. However, the abysmal defenseless girl becomes a powerful sorceress, who often wields power over men and takes control of her destiny, all but at the cost of her magical, gifted ability to have children.

We couldn’t help but remind ourselves of Lady Macbeth, often known as the fourth witch in Macbeth. She asks the spirits to unsex her so that she can be gruesome enough to fuel the murder of their king. “Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here” are her words. It was believed that women would sell their souls and physical bodies to Satan in return for his assistance in employing demons to accomplish magical deeds. Lady Macbeth’s call to forces of darkness in Act 1 is reminiscent of this superstition; it is a chilling scene that shows the audience what the character is capable of while leaving Shakespeare’s motives a moot point.

Both Yennefer and lady Macbeth’s portrayals are fearsome to behold. They both are women of an agency who gets to shift the power dynamics. Both are principal female characters in a male-dominated plot, which magnifies the gravity of their actions and choices. They become representative of all women of those times and their personalities. The play becomes their court, and the gullible audience is their judge, jury, and executioner.

Voleth Meir equivalent to the Three Witches in Macbeth?

Yet another character The Witcher brought to personify the dark feminine vigor is Voleth Meir. The deathless mother is the demon who feeds on others’ pain, turmoil, and desperations. Fans with Shakespearean knowledge are likely to resemble her with the Three Weird Sisters in his tragedy, Macbeth. Like Macbeth’s preternatural witches, The Witcher’s mysterious figure is equally likely to help or hinder a story’s protagonist, committing evil deeds such as eating children and guiding lost souls to what their hearts desire. Existing since the conjunction of spheres, the monster, like the witches, desires nothing but turmoil.

Sapkowski and Lauren Hissrich’s creation of characters and monsters took inspiration from lore and narratives worldwide. And how the characters of such fantasy tropes take after the characters of numerous narratives since time immemorial is really something of great intrigue. Were you able to draw such parallels? Do let us know in the comment section below.

Spoiler Warning: The Following Post Contains Spoilers For Prey.Last Friday, Hulu’s latest entry into the Predator franchise, Prey, was unleashed on the streaming hub. The Predator is one of the more famous movie monsters to come out in the latter quarter of the 20th century. The creature revels in The Most Dangerous Game, always seeking out the strongest opponent to hunt. The more the challenge, there’s more the thrill to be had.

This time the Predator has been dropped into Comanche Territory within The Great Plains of North America in the 19th Century. Unfortunately for the Comanche or anyone else who resides there, access to a mini-gun isn’t available for another couple of centuries. With the vast difference in technology between the Predator and its prey, the characters in Prey showed varying degrees of bravery.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

10 Raphael

Raphael was an individual who was associated with the wrong crowd at the worst time. His role as the designated translator for the group of fur-trappers is crucial when he tries to employ Naru to their cause in capturing the Predator.

Related: Every Predator Film, Ranked By Kill Count

When diplomacy fails, Raphael doesn’t protest when his fellow trappers torture Taabe and use him and Naru as bait for the Predator. His meekness and cowardice is proven more so during the Predator’s slaughter of his compatriots as he hides behind a tree. Eventually, he would attempt to play possum to avoid the Predator, if only they were a little more tolerant of pain.

9 The Fur-Trappers

The result of growing capitalism in the western hemisphere, the fur-trappers merely see what profit is to be gained from their conquests. Their thrill of the hunt is more for the prospect of fortune than it is for sport or survival.

Towards the climax of the film, they attempt to trap the Predator and utilize Naru and Taabe as bait, showcasing their cowardice in utilizing innocents for their gain. But when it comes time for the Predator to show up, they do somewhat competently execute their trap only to vastly underestimate their target. The fur-trappers’ actions are a display of bravery and stupidity in equal measure.

8 Wasape

Wasape is the hot-headed member of Naru’s tribe and the most vocal in their misogyny against her attempts to become a hunter. A proud warrior, there is no denying that he is capable in the hunt and has a strong sense of self but his attitude towards Naru and dismissal of her warnings would only be his undoing.

His overconfidence in his skill led him into situations where he viewed himself as the top of the food chain. Unfortunately for him, this would get the better of him as he doesn’t recognize fear when needed to and ultimately becomes the Predator’s first on-screen human kill.

7 Itsee

Itsee is another case of it’s not a matter of whether their bravery is up for debate, it’s a matter that the audience didn’t get a chance to see it before he was quickly killed off. Being a Comanche warrior comes with a lot of skills and the mindset for any hunter to be envious of.

Related: Every Yautja Hunter In The Predator Franchise, Ranked

He does have one moment where he attempts a team-up with Naru in trying to take down the alien. His calm and cool in the face of danger is on full display. Unfortunately it quickly fades when Naru correctly points out that they don’t have a chance against the superior foe and are forced to flee.

6 Ania

Before Taabe and Naru have their chance to face off against the Predator, Ania together with his friend Huupi challenge the powerful foe to avenge their friend, Wasapi. Despite seeing the disparity in weapons and size, the two proud warriors attempt an offensive.

After being flown in the air and giving off a Wilhelm scream, Ania returns to the fight, no hesitation, and manages to strike a blow and draw blood from the Predator. It’s an impressive feat that proves the tenacity a Comanche warrior wields, yet sadly it doesn’t matter when faced off against the aforementioned disparity in strength in a one-on-one with the Predator.

5 Huupi

Together with Ania, Huupi gathers the courage to fight the Predator head-on even after it’s turned off its camouflage cloak, revealing their true appearance. Even after seeing the Predator roar in fury, Huupi doesn’t hesitate to coordinate an attack with Ania and hopefully get the chance to avenge their friend.

Spear in hand they manage to hold off the Predator in a duel for a hot second before they are bested by the Predator’s advanced weaponry. All hope lost, Huupi still cries in defiance before he is summarily taken as a worthy trophy for the sport-obsessed hunter.

4 The Predator

Even though the Predator featured in the film is considered the main antagonist, it would be remiss to not mention what separates this Predator from previous iterations. The “Feral” Predator as some have dubbed it, has an absolute lust for battle with a prideful sense to get up close and personal with its targets.

In one of the film’s best action sequences, the Feral Predator fights a grizzly bare-handed. This could be viewed as the Predator wanting to experience a true test of its own strength against a worthy opponent. Its fight with the grizzly goes poorly at first with them taking on multiple wounds until they manage to regain their composure and win the fight in a one-hit knockout. The Predator could have easily dispatched the feral beast with its arsenal but chose to fight close quarters instead thus earning its victory “bloodbath.”

3 Taabe

Taabe is the quintessential model for the Comanche warrior, he’s tactful, knows his prey, and has the brawn to back it. Throughout they prove themselves to be more than capable to remain calm and collected when faced with danger, whether it be lions or galactic alien-hunters. He is effectively the Dutch stand-in as he even gets to call back to one of Arnie’s lines from the original film.

Related: 10 Side Characters In The Predator Franchise With Main Character Energy

His courage and bravery are recognized by all of those in their tribe and at one point is awarded the title of “war chief” for his efforts in hunting down the lion that had maimed and killed other hunters. But his true moment to shine comes from his ultimate sacrifice to save his little sister, Naru. Knowing his fate, he takes the moment to encourage his sister in her hunt of the Predator and holds the creature off for an impressive amount of time before he becomes another trophy.

2 Sarii

Throughout history, there have been tales of the courageous acts domesticated dogs managed when it came to in service to their handlers or the love they shared for their owners. Sarii is no exception to their owner and trainer, Naru. Time and time again, Sarii can chases down and draws away creatures five times bigger than themselves.

In fact, it’s because of this cunning and the bravery they’ve instilled that proves crucial in defeating the Predator towards the climax. Without command or a warning to heed from Naru, Sarii jumps to protect their owner from the seven-foot-tall monster despite the danger of the Predator possibly seeing them as a worthy target.

1 Naru

Without a doubt the film’s protagonist, Naru is the epitome of what it means and what it takes to be brave even if she doesn’t see it herself. Naru is the one to choose the Predator to be the subject of her kühtaamia upon seeing its footprint, and she is able to determine that it’s a bigger threat before anybody else.

Bravery isn’t necessarily to be defined as charging in blindly despite all odds but to charge a head and recognizing the fear to be had when facing insurmountable odds. Though she feels downtrodden when believing that the Predator doesn’t see her as a “worthy” opponent, she quickly realizes that she can capitalize on that and execute a plan to ultimately defeat it.

Spoiler Warning: The Following Post Contains

“People were trying to cast her as, like, ‘the fat one,'” Lynskey remembered of Murphy.

Melanie Lynskey is looking back on Hollywood’s typecasting of women based on their bodies, and the “Heavenly Creatures” alum couldn’t help but point out one cautionary “heartbreaking” tale: Brittany Murphy.

Lynskey, nominated for an Emmy thanks to her stunning performance in “Yellowjackets,” has been open about the criticisms of her physique onscreen. While Lynskey has slammed the backlash, she opened up about what it means to be a woman in Hollywood.

“I was friends with Brittany Murphy, and the way she viewed herself was always really heartbreaking to me — the things she felt she had to change to be a successful actor,” Lynskey told InStyle for a cover story. “She was perfect just as she was, but people were trying to cast her as, like, ‘the fat one,’ because when she was a very young teenager, her cheeks were a little bit round.”

Lynskey explained, “People tell you that you’re a particular thing, and it’s very hard to fight back against.”

Murphy’s body was the subject of quips in “Clueless,” and as she underwent a drastic transformation, audiences publicly wonder if she was healthy or not. Murphy denied having an eating disorder, but recent HBO Max documentary “What Happened, Brittany Murphy?” implied Murphy struggled with one. Murphy eventually died of a heart attack at age 32.

Almost two decades later, and Lynskey hopes Hollywood can normalize all body types.

“I’m trying to just say to myself, ‘OK, you’re normalizing this, and hopefully more women will come along who look like you, and people won’t feel like they have to say things like that,’ because there is kind of a backhanded compliment,” Lynskey said. “Sometimes, I get tired of hearing about my body, even when it is positive, I just, you know, feel like I need a break from thinking about it and hearing about it and I think all women feel that way.”

And Lynskey credited real-life husband Jason Ritter (who could potentially be her “Yellowjackets” co-star at some point…) for always supporting her.

“Sometimes, my husband will tweet things about thinking I look hot or whatever and a lot of people like it, and I said to him, ‘Isn’t it funny that if I was a Victoria’s Secret model and you tweeted the exact same thing, people would not respond the way that they do?’” Lynskey cited. “People get excited because I look like I look, and my husband, he’s like a cute, young actor, but I am aware that some of the responses to him are like, ‘Good for you.‘ It’s like, well, he got together with me because he found me attractive. It’s not like he’s throwing himself on the sword for the rest of mankind. And also — he had competition.”

From the mind behind Train to Busan

Game shows are heading to the Primetime Emmys. As part of the ongoing Emmy realignment between the Television Academy (the West Coast org formerly known as the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences) and the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the two sides will migrate game show categories from the Daytime Emmys to the Primetime Emmys beginning next year.

The decision comes as, previously announced, the two orgs have agreed to award many programming categories by genre instead of daypart. Game shows remained a sticking point in such an arrangement.

Moving forward, the new Primetime Emmy category for outstanding game show “will be awarded to programs with game elements that primarily take place in studio and involve mental challenges,” the orgs said in an announcement on Thursday. “They must be self-contained or carryover (winner continues to next episode) and cannot be arced.”

According to the announcement, game shows migrating to the Primetime Emmys will have an 18-month eligibility window, Jan. 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023.

As part of the move, the Primetime Emmys will also add a category for outstanding host for a game show, “awarded to the “master of ceremony” host(s) for a continuing performance in a game show.” This year, in their final appearance in the Daytime Emmys, “Jeopardy” continued its streak as the best game show winner, while Steve Harvey (“Family Feud”) won for game show host.

The Primetime Emmys already have an “outstanding competition program” field (which awards programs with reality-style, skill-based competitions). In order to avoid confusion, the category for the latter will return to its original name of “outstanding reality competition program.” Also, game shows and reality competition programs with solely children as contestants must enter in the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards.

The decision to realign the major Emmy awards came last year, with several categories realigned to focus on genre, rather than dayparts, as a way to divide eligibility between the Primetime and Daytime Emmys.

Most notably, the alignment shifted all scripted programming to enter the Primetime Emmys, with two exceptions: Daytime soap operas — defined as “multi-camera, weekday daily serials” and any spinoffs or reboots of those sudsers — will remain with the Daytime Emmys. And as had been previously announced, all children’s fare are now be a part of the new Children’s & Family Emmys, which launches later this year as a new ceremony.

In the talk fields, the TV Academy and NATAS has so far kept two separate talk show competitions in both the Daytime and Primetime competitions, but it’s the next frontier to tackle.

The decision in 2020 to move all of the Primetime Emmy kids categories to the Daytime Emmys (and as of this year, the Children’s & Family Emmys, administered by NATAS) represented a major thaw in the decades-ling cold war between the two TV academies. The orgs split in 1977 over irreconcilable differences, and spent the next few decades at war, ocassionally suing each other over issues of Emmy domains and oversight. Things reached a boiling point in 2008, when NATAS tried to launch its own Broadband Emmys, and the TV Academy balked.

LENOX, Mass. — The problem with “Lessons in Love and Violence” has always been that it is not “Written on Skin.”

“Skin,” George Benjamin’s unflinchingly savage second opera with the librettist Martin Crimp, was hailed as a landmark at its premiere at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2012. Its stature has only grown since, and it’s a routine choice as one of the great operas of the century so far.

Benjamin and Crimp stuck to their template for the gruesome “Lessons,” the successor piece that was more coolly received after its debut in London in 2018 and that received its American premiere on Monday night at Ozawa Hall here, with the composer leading the youngsters of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in dagger-sharp support of an incisive cast of current and past Tanglewood vocal fellows.

Like “Skin,” “Lessons” has a dense, historically contrived libretto, offering a callous plot that hacks away at any sentimentality you might have left about power or love. There is music that seethes and soothes — its every last, creepy twang of a cimbalom or bludgeon of brass conceived and executed with flawless clarity of gesture and precision of timbre.

Yet somehow this jewel-studded, velvet-wrapped mace of a score never once feels too deliberately methodical or sounds anything but fully alive. Its imposing rigor scalds in the heat of the murderous moment.

Listen to it, and you might ask yourself which of these two unsparing operas is supposed to be Benjamin’s masterpiece. For if “Skin” disappeared, “Lessons” would be sufficient to anoint its composer all on its own.

The operas are similar, but “Lessons” is no mere reproduction of its predecessor. It abandons the metahistorical flourishes of the earlier work, focusing on the story at hand rather than creating a superstructure of characters to drag it into the present. Despite the medieval setting, the core conceit of a prince receiving (dubious, shall we say) instruction in governance from the machinations of his parents — the King and his wife, Isabel — and their scheming courtier-lovers, Gaveston and Mortimer, has a Machiavellian timelessness to it.

“Don’t bore me with the price of bread,” the King sings when Mortimer confronts him with the ruin that his favor for Gaveston has unleashed on the body politic. “There is no connection between our music and your labor,” Isabel assures the impoverished supplicants who demand an end to entertainments whose costs could pay their wages for a year. Not for nothing did the concert performance here, instinctively acted behind music stands though it was, take on the morality tale feel of an oratorio.

However revealing the unstaged approach might be, it’s regrettable that “Lessons” had its premiere like this. How is it possible, one has to ask, that the first American performance of such a major work should be entrusted to a group of summer-school attendees for one sparsely attended night only — a Monday, no less — in the Berkshires?

The Lyric Opera of Chicago is one of seven co-commissioners of “Lessons,” but there is still no sign of it mounting Katie Mitchell’s original staging, which it had to postpone in 2020. In the absence of a major house taking up “Skin,” the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, at its bravest, gave that work its staged premiere in 2015, but that festival is no more.

It is to Tanglewood’s immense credit that it has taken the initiative, pushing its fellows to their limit at the end of the annual Festival of Contemporary Music and building on the long, close relationship that the Boston Symphony Orchestra has enjoyed with Benjamin, who led “Skin” in its quickly mounted American debut here in 2013 and followed it with a song cycle, “Dream of the Song,” in 2016.

And you would be glad, though gladdening this opera is not, to hear a performance as strong as Monday’s in any major house. Three of the main parts were taken by recent graduates of Tanglewood’s vocal program; greater testament to its worth would be hard to imagine. Nathaniel Sullivan sang the King — Edward II, as imagined by Christopher Marlowe then reimagined by Crimp — with sniveling command, the monarch’s weakness to the fore. Daniel McGrew was eerily believable portraying the soldier-technocrat Mortimer’s earnest association of orderly progress with the necessity of killing, while Dominik Belavy gave Gaveston a deliciously unhinged air.

Surely no soprano takes on a role written for Barbara Hannigan without fear, but the current Tanglewood fellow Elizabeth Polese made it seem as if she had as the haughty Isabel. She excelled just as Edmond Rodriguez brought frightening dignity to the Boy who learns his lessons all too well, chillingly scheduling the execution of Mortimer after the general has installed him on the throne. Meredith Wohlgemuth, Claire McCahan and Jack Canfield acquitted themselves well in smaller roles.

But the orchestra was the star. Benjamin conducted it with his customary, graceful efficiency. Short of Alban Berg, few composers have been able to make abject brutality sound so exquisite, even so tender as Benjamin does here, his use of silence as intentional as his careful etching of textures around the voices.

There is an unerring flow to “Lessons”: Several of its seven short scenes echo one another; interludes link them, commenting on and even extending the action; and the odd leitmotif pokes through, most noticeably the braying trombones that announce the King and that reappear, with mutes, when his son assumes the throne.

Yet it is Benjamin’s merciless ability to hunt down the most specific of sounds that makes him such a potent dramatist. A desperately longing solo horn, fraught with desire, plays as Gaveston relates how the King likes to hold his hand over a flame; pawing woodwinds surround a Madman who fatally insists to the Boy that he is the real king, based on testimony from a cat.

Gaveston gets the grisliest death of all, nothing like the horrifying tower of dissonance that accompanies the killing of the King, but one that we have to imagine in absentia, as the powerless ruler reads the details of his lover’s death from a letter while a percussionist taps out a rhythm on the rim of a side drum.

You might hear in that the loneliness of Gaveston, or the dread of a King confronting the passage of time before his own, sure murder. I heard cockroaches, scurrying around the dead. Either way, what in any other composer’s hands could be predictable, Benjamin makes magical.

The women argue inside the shaking, single-wide trailer as they are towed through the roads of rural Texas, fighting to get what they want.
