The release of ChatGPT led to a 2% drop in the number of writing jobs
on one major freelance employment platform and a 5.2% plunge in monthly earnings, a new study found.

The study examined the work received by 92,547 freelance writers who get jobs through the platform UpWork, and found that in just the first few months after its release, OpenAI’s artificial intelligence tool had a “substantial adverse affected workers’ employment outcomes.”

The researchers from Washington University in St. Louis and New York University specifically chose to measure freelance writing work, because it was likely to be one of the areas most impacted by the November 2022 introduction of ChatGPT and subsequent release of several rival large language models.

They decided to look at writing jobs after examining Google searches in the months after the release.

“‘GPT Writing’ is by far the most commonly search term compared to other domains, such as ‘GPT translation’ or ‘GPT software development,’” they wrote. “We interpret these patterns as suggestive evidence, consistent with the notion that while multiple industries are affected by the introduction of ChatGPT, the short-term implications are much more pronounced in the writing-related tasks.”

The decline in both the number of writing jobs and the compensation received via UpWork suggests “a causal relationship” with the release of ChatGPT, wrote researchers Xiang Hui and Oren Reshef of Washington University and Luofeng Zhou of NYU.

The reduced number of jobs and lower pay offered means that “freelancers are 1.2% less likely to receive any employment in a given month and take 4.7% less jobs,” the study found, labeling the AI impact “economically meaningful.”

What’s more, the study found consistent evidence that “high-quality workers being disproportionately affected,” meaning the top-paid freelancers were hurt the most.

“We do not find evidence that high-quality service, measured by their past performance and employment, moderates the adverse effects on employment,” the researchers wrote. “In fact, we find suggestive evidence that top freelancers
are disproportionately affected by AI.”

The study noted that it looked only at the short-term impact of generative AI, but said the results suggest that the technology “reduces overall demand for knowledge workers of all types, and may have the potential to narrow gaps among workers” in terms of pay.

While the paper provides new and preliminary evidence on the short-term effects of generative AI, the researchers wrote that “the long-term implications may be significantly different, and it is unclear how our findings extend to longer time horizons.”

The issue of AI use and its potential for replacing writers and actors was a major point of contention in the dual Hollywood strikes this summer.

The WGA contract included protections for writers, including preventing studios from requiring AI use and language on how the union members’ work may be used to train AI. The SAG-AFTRA deal, which is not yet ratified by members, also includes provisions related to AI, but the details have not yet been made public.

Romanian-born Canadian Serban Ghenea isn’t new to the industry — in fact, he received his first Grammy nearly two decades ago

What do Usher’s Confessions, La Roux’s “In For the Kill,” and Taylor Swift‘s Folklore have in common? They were all mixed by 45-time Grammy-nominated Serban Ghenea.

You may not have noticed, but the Canadian mixer/engineer has received Grammy nominations for the last 12 consecutive years, taking home 19 awards. His first win was for Justin Timberlake’s Justified at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards in 2004, and he’s since gone on to mix every Taylor Swift record, beginning with 2012’s Red and including her four re-recordings (with the exception of 2020’s Evermore).

This year, Ghenea makes a clean sweep with seven more nominations, with three nods for Record of the Year alone: Swift’s “Anti-Hero,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire,” and Jon Batiste’s “Worship.” He earned two nominations for Album of the Year (Rodrigo’s Guts and Swift’s Midnights) and another double for Best Pop Dance Recording (David Guetta’s “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” and Guetta and Bebe Rexha’s “One in a Million”).

Trending

“I learned early on that if you try to put a specific sound on something, you end up shortchanging yourself and dating yourself,” Ghenea told Variety in a 2021 interview. “Having worked with so many artists from the beginning of their careers, helping them shape their sound and develop their signature, it’s a matter of making sure you are getting people to where they’re trying to go without imposing your sound. That way you don’t get dated and nobody’s tired of your sound.”

By the looks of it, Ghenea isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. He just mixed 1989 (Taylor’s Version) — which contains five excellent vault tracks currently sitting pretty in the Billboard Top 10. The odds are high that he’ll continue this impressive Grammy streak.

Cecilia Aldarondo takes the process of reliving adolescent trauma to a literal degree in “You Were My First Boyfriend,” her feature that falls somewhere between documentary and diaristic re-enactment. Spurred by her 20-year high school reunion in Winter Park, Fla., Aldarondo pulls back layers of memories and old home-movie footage to investigate the significant relationships of her formative years: her first intense crush, her bullies, and her childhood best friend and fellow outsider, Caroline.

To face down her demons, Aldarondo enlists a cadre of child actors to recreate scenes from her time in high school — both memories of real events and fantasy sequences — in which Aldarondo portrays her own teenage self. The film documents the making of these scenes as much as the final product, a process that can be equal parts touching and awkward. When Aldarondo gets in touch with the now grown-up Joel, the boy she had a crush on for six years, she chooses to read a poem she wrote about him during the peak of her obsession — a decision that makes even her current partner, Gabe, cringe with embarrassment.

However, despite its title, “You Were My First Boyfriend” is at its most effective when Aldarondo moves beyond teen lust and into the more complicated aspects of her upbringing. Her Puerto Rican heritage made her an easy target for bullying at her predominantly white high school, but Aldarondo was not exempt from acting cruel to those around her to fit in. She rehashes those nuances through, among other things, creating a shot-for-shot remake of Tori Amos’s “Crucify” music video with her sister Laura. It’s just zany enough to work.

You Were My First Boyfriend
Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 37 minutes. Watch on HBO platforms.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic led by conductor Gustavo Dudamel earned major nods Friday in the 2024 Grammy Award nominations, led by their performance of the fantastical “Adès: Dante.”

Dudamel — who announced in February that he would leave L.A. to join the New York Philharmonic in 2026 after a 17-year run here — was nominated along with the orchestra for “Adès: Dante” in the orchestral performance category. The conductor and orchestra are up against Karina Canellakis and Netherlands Radio, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra, JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony.

Dudamel, 42, already has four Grammy Awards and was nominated for a fifth time last year along with the L.A. Phil for “Dvořák: Symphonies Nos. 7-9.” However, he did not win the prize last year — it went to Michael Repper and the New York Youth Symphony.

Should Dudamel win at the 66th Grammy Awards, the composer would land his fifth win among six nominations. At the 64th Grammys, he won best choral performance for “Mahler: Symphony No. 8, ‘Symphony of a Thousand.’ ” The year before he nabbed the win for best orchestral performance for “Ives: Complete Symphonies.” He won in the same category at the 62nd Grammys Awards for “Norman: Sustain.” His first win was during the 54th Grammy Awards for best orchestral performance for “Brahms: Symphony No. 4.”

British composer Thomas Adès, who composed what Times critic Mark Swed called the “wondrously anarchic and entertaining” “Inferno,” is nominated this year for contemporary classical composition for “Adès: Dante.” He premiered the piece in May 2022 during the L.A. Phil’s Gen X festival, which he curated. Adès squares off against fellow composers Andy Akiho, William Brittelle, Missy Mazzoli and Jessie Montgomery for the award, which recognizes works composed within the last 25 years and released for the first time during the eligibility period. (The eligibility window for the 2024 Grammys was Oct. 1, 2022, to Sept. 15, 2023.)

“Adès: Dante” producer Dmitriy Lipay was nominated Friday for producer of the year, classical, for several of his productions with the L.A. Phil, including “Adès: Dante,” “Fandango” and “Rachmaninoff: The Piano Concertos & Paganini Rhapsody.”

The “Fandango” album, which featured Dudamel, violist Anne Akiko Meyers, opera baritone Gustavo Castillo and the L.A. Phil, was also recognized in the engineered album, classical, category. That award would be presented to the engineers, Alexander Lipay and Dmitriy Lipay, not the artists. “Fandango” was also nominated this year for classical compendium.

The 66th Grammy Awards will air Feb. 4 live on CBS and Paramount+. The televised ceremony will take place in the Crypto.com Arena in downtown L.A.

Loki Season 2 has come to an end, and with it come some big changes for the state of the MCU and Tom Hiddleston’s namesake character.

While the series has been no strangers to cliffhangers, the Season 2 finale tied things up neatly while still leaving plenty of questions for viewers to mull over.

Loki Season 2 Ending Explained

Marvel Studios

Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for Loki Season 2, Episode 6.

While much of Loki’s second season has focused on the larger ensemble cast of found family Loki picked up in the TVA, the finale (borrowing the title “Glorious Purpose” from the series pilot) largely set them to the side to focus on Loki’s series-long struggle of finding out who he really is and what he really wants.

The episode picked up quickly from Episode 5’s cliffhanger ending and saw Loki spending literal centuries doing everything he could to ensure the Loom would be stable. These efforts ultimately failed, and Loki tried repeatedly to go back further in his story to find a way to either fix things or to discern a path forward.

It was revealed that the Loom was never intended to handle more than one timeline and, in fact, never could. It was a failsafe to ensure that only He Who Remains’ Sacred Timeline would survive.

Loki crossing into the realm at the end of time
Marvel Studios

In a confrontation with the Kang Variant, Loki found himself forced to make a choice: kill Sylvie to spare He Who Remains and prevent the timelines from branching, or allow the failsafe to trigger, restoring the Sacred Timeline and destroying the TVA.

This choice was, in many ways, the hinge on which the rest of the episode pivoted. Loki needed to find a way to come to terms with the idea of potentially needing to allow a lesser evil (killing Sylvie) in order to prevent a greater one (destroying the TVA).

Loki tying the timeline branches into himself
Marvel Studios

What Loki did in the end was to carve his own path, as he has always done. He rejected his own selfish desire to stay with his friends and instead made a personal sacrifice to take He Who Remains’ place as master of time.

In his final moment in front of his friends, he told Sylvie and Mobius, “I know what I want. I know what kind of god I need to be. For you. For all of us.”

Loki as the new He Who Remains
Marvel Studios

With that, Loki destroyed the Sacred Timeline, taking the dying branches into himself and forming a new Yggdrassil-style tree, allowing the literal branches of the multiverse to endure with him as the heart binding them all together.

This act of sacrifice allowed the TVA to endure, and with it, his friends, who were now free to decide their own destinies.

What’s Next for the Loki Who Remains?

Needless to say, the Loki finale’s ending has completely changed things for both the Trickster and the MCU as a whole. Loki has taken his place as the new master of the TVA, now working to patrol multiple timelines looking for Variants of He Who Remains.

Despite previous statements that the Loki finale left Marvel in a bad position regarding Jonathan Major’s role as Kang, it’s quite possible to argue that things have been wrapped up rather nicely on that front. With no post-credit scenes or anything beyond idle mentions of Kang and his Variants, Marvel Studios really has a lot of room to decide how to proceed.

Should rumors pan out and they make the decision to have Doctor Doom take the role of the lead villain of the coming films, they have both plenty of time to set that up and a decent (albeit abrupt) ending to Kang’s threat to the Multiverse.

Should they stick with Kang, either by keeping Majors or recasting, there’s still plenty of room to work with the outstanding threat of his Variants. Loki’s new position at the heart of the multiverse puts a target on his back that the Conquerors would be sure to set eyes on.

Either way, Loki, Sylvie, and all the TVA are positioned to play a role in the wider drama of the Multiverse Saga, even if Loki Season 2 did put a rather neat bow on their stories for the time being.

Loki Season 2 is now streaming in full on Disney+.

Summary

  • James Wan reveals that the character Karshon in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be different from the comic version.
  • Filmmakers have often made changes to the source material, and it may be interesting for fans to see what elements are kept and discarded.
  • Speculation arises that Karshon could still team up with Black Manta in the sequel, as the supervillain seeks revenge on Aquaman.

James Wan has opened up about how Karshon, one of the new characters introduced in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, will be a little different from how they are in the comic. Wan’s latest film will be a sequel to 2018 superhero hit, and will see Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) facing off against David Kane, aka Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). While Black Manta is traditionally Aquaman’s archenemy in the comics, they won’t be the only rogue that Arthur faces in the movie. Another one of the villains will be Karshon (Indya Moore), who is primarily known as the Shark in the source material.

In the comics, Shark was introduced in 1963’s Green Lantern #24 as an ordinary tiger shark that was exposed to radiation via an atomic blast. The Shark subsequently gained a more humanoid form and psionic abilities that allowed the Shark to manipulate matter and increase his own intelligence by feeding off others. Retaining an animal’s bloodlust and wanting a challenge, the Shark came into conflict with Green Lantern/Hal Jordan, becoming a long time foe of the Justice League.

The Shark would face off against Aquaman after it somehow regained it’s mutated form and started posing as an Atlantean named Karshon. Teaming up with Black Manta and Ocean Master, played in the Aquaman films by Patrick Wilson, Karshon plotted to steal the throne from Aquaman and even managed to overthrow the superhero for a short amount of time. So how is the character of the Shark, aka Karshon going to be different in the superhero sequel?

As Wan explained to Empire Magazine (via The Direct):

“This Karshon is not a shark character. It’s different [from] the comic books in that sense. One of the things we wanted to do, now that Arthur is king of Atlantis, is to give him barriers within the political world. Karshon comes from the High Council, and is like a political roadblock for Arthur.”

How Will DC Fans Feel About Such Major Changes to Karshon?

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

The follow-up to the smash hit DC adventure Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa as the King of Atlantas.

Release Date

Director
James Wan

Cast
Jason Momoa, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Temuera Morrison

Writers
David Leslie Johnson, Paul Norris, Mort Weisinger

Some might find it surprising that the filmmakers would take a character literally named the Shark in the comics and have them not be a shark in the film. Of course, something it’s within every filmmakers right is to make changes to the source material, as has already been the case with numerous DC films in the past. Besides, it may be interesting for comic fans and audiences to see what elements will be carried over as well as noting the ones that have been discarded.

For instance, Karshon could still team up with Black Manta in the sequel. We know that the supervillain is vying for revenge on Aquaman for his father’s death, and Black Manta is likely to need help in trying to take down the king of Atlantis. Especially when it comes to the political side of the battle. Wan has also teased that “In his quest to find ways to destroy Arthur, Black Manta…stumbles onto something.” That something could involve Karshon, though of course that’s pure speculation at this point.

Directed by James Wan from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, and starring Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 22, 2023. Summary James Wan reveals that

Season of the Witch is beginning to wind down, but before Season of the Wish kicks off at the end of the month, it’s time to drop some currency off at Xur in exchange for some new gear. The Agent of the Nine is back, offering an assortment of Exotic and Legendary-class gear. Here’s where Xur is this weekend and what he has for sale.

This week you can find Xur in The Tower, inside the Hangar. For his weapon, Xur is offering The Jade Rabiit. Hunters can pick up the Ophidia Spathe armor; Titans can grab An Insurmountable Skullfort helmet; and Warlocks can buy The Stag helmet.

Xur Location

Xur’s location in the Tower.

Spawn in using the Courtyard transmat zone in the Tower to find Xur this week. Head left and down the stairs to enter the Hangar section, then hang another left. Make your way to the north end of the area and look for a staircase that will take you onto a catwalk, where Xur is waiting.

Xur Exotic and Legendary Items

  • Exotic Engram – 97 Legendary Shards
  • The Jade Rabbit – 29 Legendary Shards
  • An Insurmountable Skullfort – 23 Legendary Shards
  • Ophidia Spathe – 23 Legendary Shards
  • The Stag – 23 Legendary Shards
  • Hawkmoon – 200 Legendary Shards, 125,000 Glimmer, 1 Ascendant Shard, 1 Exotic Cipher
  • Xenology quest – Free
  • Legendary weapons and armor – 50 Legendary Shards, 1,000 Glimmer

Xur also offers the Xenology quest every week, which requires you to complete 21 Vanguard Ops or win Crucible and Gambit matches so that you can earn an Exotic Cipher. These are normally used to buy old Exotics from a kiosk in the Tower, but beginning this season, you’ll be able to spend them at Master Rahool to get the Exotics that you want. The cap on Exotic Ciphers has also increased, as you’ll now be able to hold up to five of them at a time.

Exotic Armor

An Insurmountable Skullfort (Exotic Titan helmet)

An Insurmountable Skullfort
An Insurmountable Skullfort

While it’s title is a mouthful, An Insurmountable Skullfort’s perk is easy to understand. Kills with Arc melee abilities trigger health regeneration and restore melee energy. Pairing this with a Monte Carlo in your weapon slot should help boost its efficacy at keeping you alive, as you’ll be able to get your melee ability charged up even more quickly. The strength and recovery stats on this Exotic are fittingly high, but resilience is quite low for something that needs you to get up close and personal.

  • Mobility: 12
  • Resilience: 3
  • Recovery: 19
  • Discipline: 2
  • Intellect: 8
  • Strength: 20

Ophidia Spathe (Exotic Hunter armor)

Ophidia SpatheOphidia Spathe
Ophidia Spathe

Ophidia Spathe works quite nicely around builds that make heavy use of your Hunter melee ability, as you get two knives per charge. With a Solar build like the Nuclear Knife, this could work quite nicely with clearing the battlefield of red-bar enemies. The stats aren’t too bad, with the lowest one here being intellect. Recovery and discipline could be better, but mobility, resilience, and strength are pretty decent overall.

  • Mobility: 12
  • Resilience: 15
  • Recovery: 8
  • Discipline: 6
  • Intellect: 6
  • Strength: 19
  • Total: 66

The Stag (Exotic Warlock helmet)

The StagThe Stag
The Stag

Rifts, rifts, and even more rifts! The Stag is all about using your Rift class ability to its fullest if you’re playing as a Warlock, as this Exotic provides a damage reduction buff to any Guardians standing in that healing or empowering pool. You’ll get Rift energy when critically wounded, and if you’re taken out, your body will leave a healing rift, making this a very good Exotic for teamwork-focused Warlocks. The stats on this roll are very nicely balanced as well, with only mobility and strength needing some possible armor mods to buff them.

  • Mobility: 7
  • Resilience: 14
  • Recovery: 14
  • Discipline: 14
  • Intellect: 10
  • Strength: 6
  • Total: 65

Exotic Weapons

A very popular scout rifle in PvP, The Jade Rabbit’s Fate of All Fools perk allows you to gain bonus damage on your next body shot after you’ve chained several precision shots together. The bonus to this perk is that ammo will also be returned to the mag, making this an excellent weapon for marksmen.

  • The Fate of All Fools
  • Polygonal Rifling
  • High-Caliber Rounds
  • Zen Moment

Hawkmoon

Hawkmoon

Hawkmoon this week is neither bad nor good, hovering in an average zone with its roll this week. Killing Wind is this week’s new perk, which grants increased mobility, weapon range, and handling for a short duration after you land a final blow.

  • Paracausal Shot
  • Hammer-Forged Rifling

The anchor is in studio, speaking directly to the camera then cuts to a news segment, one in which the words coming from a French-speaking man come out of his mouth as English.

This is one of the elements of an AI-produced newscast being introduced later today by startup Channel 1, set to run on its own site, Channel.ai, as well as Crackle, Redbox Free Streaming and X/Twitter.

The Channel 1 startup, from entrepreneur Adam Mosam and producer Scott Zabielski, has a distribution deal with Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, and the plans are to introduce a FAST channel in February or March followed by mobile and connected TV apps, the latter of which will offer personalization of viewers’ news diets.

Mosam, a tech entrepreneur who has been chief digital officer for Chicken Soup, said that, in contrast to previous, Max Headroom-like experiments, the technology “has gotten to a place where it’s comfortable to watch.”

“Not only is the visualization there, someone that can speak to you and deliver the news, but there are so many other base technologies that we can leverage to further enhance the experience of watching the news,” he said.

What’s debuting this evening is what Mosam calls the “showcase episode,” a pilot “to demonstrate everything from editorial to technology. We just thought it was important to prove we could execute on the idea and show this off,” he said. He said that the project so far is self funded, but they will raise capital shortly. “

Channel 1, he said, will draw on content from three separate sources: They’ll be partnering with a yet-to-be-announced news agency, drawing on content from independent journalists, and creating AI-generated news from “a trusted primary source,” like a government document or SEC report, “that we can put together and format for our audience.”

“We are not gathering primary data sources, but we are processing that data,” Mosam said.

The initial newscast will be a mixture of licensed clips and fair use content, while the anchors will actually be based on real people who have been compensated for the use of their likenesses, he said.

The debut of the pilot comes as networks, like CBS News, are devoting more resources to identifying AI deepfakes and other misinformation, to the point of hiring so-called “forensic” journalists.

For its part, Channel 1 plans to feature an icon on the corner of the screen that will identify portions that are generated. For example, the icon pops up when the French man’s words are translated into English.

“I think people are correct in their thinking that we need to be cognizant and aware of this problem,” Mosam said. “This is going to be an issue, as a society, we are going to have to deal with, because as the technology improves, it will get easier to generate what we would maybe term ‘fake’ or ‘fake news’ or generate itself.”

He said that in their content, “they’re very clear that the audience at every point in time knows exactly what they are looking at if there has been some sort of AI modification.” He also said that “at every step of our editorial process, we do have humans in the loop,” with plans to hire an editor in chief within the next six months. A staff of 11 people are working on the project right now.

“We’re not coming at this from, ‘Oh, we’re targeting these major cable news networks,” Mosam said. ‘We’re coming at this from more of a first principles idea, understanding that this technology exists, and as digital natives ourselves, we understand how to build that technology. We understand what to be worried about.” He said that plans also are in the works is a system that will provide users’ with proof of source material, “almost like a chain of custody of where we found our news.”

Zabielski said, “We want the audience to feel comfortable that this news is coming from trusted sources and that we are just formatting this in a way, and distilling it down, in a way that fits our format to present it to the audience. People feeling comfortable that this data is trustworthy is number one, because if people don’t trust it, they they’re not going to want to watch our news.”

That said, the use of AI has caused anxiety throughout the news business, not just over the IP questions raised by the use of content in training models, but for the prospect of vast numbers of employees being displaced. AI was a sticking point in the recently resolved WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which had to do with film and TV contracts, while newsrooms have set up guidelines for the use of the technology for the time being.

Mosam said that the production costs of Channel 1 will be much cheaper than traditional cable news stations. And they don’t doubt that the technology poses a threat to the talking heads of today.

Zabielski said that for the anchors who merely read off Teleprompters, “it’s hard to imagine the technology isn’t going to come along at some point for those people. But the reality is most of the people in the news business are also journalists and reporters that also appear on camera. And that’s not what we are trying to replace. Those are the people who are doing the actual reporting. We still need that reporting to be done, whether or not an avatar is delivering that or we’re the ones going on camera.”

He noted that a news producer “could have a trusted avatar where they become trusted reporter without having to go on camera, but it’s really their work, but they are getting compensated and their work is still being seen.” He also suggested that content licensing could provide a revenue stream for local news outlets, which have been hollowed out across the country.

Mosam also said that they are developing an anchor that would “have significantly more depth” than the AI-generated personalities that already are appearing in Korea, India and China. “So if you can think of this anchor, it is not just, now you fed it a script and its lips moved. It has a significant amount of technology behind it, where if you can think that every anchor would be its own version of Chat GPT. It would have its own memory capability. It would have its own linguistics, its own tone of voice.” It also will be tailored for different parts of the world.”

The ultimate goal of Channel 1 is a personalized app, where users can customize everything from their news interests to the “style of the anchor you like to deliver the news to you,” Zabielski said.

Such personalization of the news has also been the source of some consternation, with audiences drawn to personalities and voices that they want to hear, creating their own information bubble. But that’s a longtime trend, via cable TV and social media, that predates AI.

The app, Mosam said, will allow users to “navigate through the news similarly in a way that someone may be watching TikTok, for example. And because you are making decisions so quickly, as opposed to watching a streaming service, traditionally where you are watching a TV show or a movie, we will learn about you fairly quickly and understand what it is you are looking for and what type of news that we can help to inform you.”

The anchor is in studio, speaking directly

The newest MCU movie that has an uphill battle while the studio struggles to maintain order and quality opens with a humble early total.

The Marvels makes its way to theaters this week. In a possible attempt to garner new interest in the low-tracking movie, Marvel Studios released a new trailer just before the release that promoted the dramatic aspect of the film that differed from earlier promotional materials, which emphasized the comedic elements. The new trailer also teased something big with text that reads, “Be there for the moment that changes everything.” And in an interesting clip, mysterious figures appear to arrive through a Bifrost-esque portal while Nick Fury proclaims, “They’re here.” Then, we get a small glimpse of a superhero-costumed figure walking past Monica.

Deadline reports that the Thursday early preview totals brought in around $6.5 million. Analysts estimated that the newest film in the superhero universe would fall below the lowest-opening movie in the MCU, The Incredible Hulk, which had opened to $55.4 million in its premiere weekend. Advanced ticket sales for The Marvels topped out at $5 million, which put it on track to do similar numbers to this year’s notorious flop, The Flash. However, The Flash‘s Thursday previews would open higher with $9.7 million.

The Marvels seemed to have more working against it, though. Although The Flash suffered a long PR nightmare with its star, Ezra Miller, the other stars would still be able to do press and draw attention to the return of Michael Keaton as Batman. The Marvels is coming off the heels of an actors’ strike that had forbidden the stars from doing any kind of promotion. Now that the strike has ended, the movie’s director Nia DaCosta and Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani made an appearance at a special screening on opening night to help promote the movie.

In addition, Brie Larson took to social media to finally be able to talk about the movie and excitedly proclaimed, “We’re so back.” The strike’s end also has Larson doing a last-minute scheduling for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where she’ll appear tonight to do press for the movie. Marvel Studios has been in the spotlight for the recent troubles that the company has been facing, which range from the Jonathan Majors controversy to newly revealed reshoots for Captain America: Brave New World and the major overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again. Add in a big dose of the much-theorized and hotly-debated “superhero fatigue,” and The Marvels has even more of an uphill battle to contend with.

Focus Features has picked up the U.S. rights to Edward Berger’s new thriller, Conclave, which stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow.

Based on Robert Harris’ best-selling novel of the same name, Conclave is set in the secretive Vatican meeting of Catholic cardinals who gather in Rome to pick a new Pope.  Fiennes plays Cardinal Lomeli, tasked with overseeing the Cardinals arriving from across the globe to join the Conclave. But as the political machinations inside the Vatican intensify, Lomeli realizes that the departed Pope had kept a secret from them that he must uncover before a new Pope has been chosen.

Lithgow will play Cardinal Tremblay, Tucci will play Cardinal Bellini and Isabella Rossellini will play Sister Agnes.

Conclave is produced by House Productions and FilmNation Entertainment, with Peter Straughan writing the script. The ensemble cast includes Carlos Diehz, Lucian Msamati, Brían F. O’Byrne, Merab Ninidze and Sergio Castellitto.

“Edward Berger is a devilishly talented filmmaker who made our collective hearts race by showing us what happens to our better angels in those Machiavellian halls of power.  We cannot wait to bring audiences to the edge of their seats with him and our friends at House Productions, Indian Paintbrush and FilmNation,” Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features, said in a statement on Friday.

Conclave is produced by Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, Michael A. Jackman, Robert Harris and Alice Dawson, and was developed with the support of Access Entertainment. FilmNation Entertainment and Indian Paintbrush co-financed the film.

German director Berger (Patrick Melrose, Deutschland ’83) earned an Academy Award for his antiwar epic All Quiet on the Western Front.

“27 years ago, I landed my first job as an intern at the company that later became Focus. Ever since I left and embarked on the long path of making movies I have been wanting to return. To now work with Peter Kujawski and his incredibly dedicated team feels like I have arrived at a home that I‘ve always missed. I am grateful and so cannot wait to share the movie with audiences in the U.S. as well as around the world at the hands of Focus and all our distribution partners,” Berger said in a statement.

The U.S. distribution deal was handled by CAA Media Finance, FilmNation Entertainment, and Indian Paintbrush.

There is an abundance of classic Julia Roberts performances, and My Best Friend’s Wedding is just one excellent example of the rom-com queen’s always-charming work. Roberts stars in the 1997 release as Julianne, a woman who realizes she’s been in love with her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) for years, and is only just now ready to admit it to herself. Unfortunately for Julianne, Michael is set to wed Kimberly (Cameron Diaz) … unless Julianne can stop him and walk down the aisle herself. My Best Friend‘s wedding is the perfect chaser to Pretty Woman, and while we’re at it, we recommend you follow it up with a screening of Runaway Bride for a true Roberts ’90s trifecta.

The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel is nominated for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The officially recognized nominees are the collections’ art directors: Daniel Murphy, Mark Ohe, and Neutral Milk Hotel bandleader Jeff Mangum. It’s the first time that Mangum has ever been nominated for a Grammy Award.

Mangum, Murphy, and Ohe will face off against the art directors behind For the Birds: The Birdsong Project, Ngọt’s Gieo, and the deluxe editions of Bo Burnham’s Inside and Lou Reed’s Words & Music, May 1965. Last year’s Grammy Award for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package went to the art directors behind the Grateful Dead’s In and Out of the Garden: Madison Square Garden ’81, ’82, ’83.

The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel includes Neutral Milk Hotel’s two studio albums (1996’s On Avery Island and 1998’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea), the band’s 1993 Everything Is EP, and more. A press release for the box set described it thusly:

The work has always come together subconsciously for Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum, even this box set. For years, Mangum collected images for an art box of sorts—would it be a Joseph Cornell–style assemblage? An experimental board game? Only time would tell. In the end, it became a discography-spanning compendium of his musical universe that still left a few treasures floating around in the musical ether.

Jeff Mangum has largely stayed out of the public eye since Neutral Milk Hotel concluded their reunion tour in 2015. These days, when he does interact with his fans, it comes in the form of handmade drawings that he sells online. One drawing even led to some speculation that a new album could be on the horizon. Still, no new music has materialized, but Mangum did publicly endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for president in 2020.

The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel

Wednesday night, October 18, at the Sherman Library and Gardens in Corona Del Mar, guests were treated to a lovely party that honored two stars, William Shatner and Eugenio Derbez. It was an exciting evening where guests were entertained with tastings from local restaurants and an open bar from sponsors like Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

The event kicked off with a panel discussion with Bobby Berk, star of Netflix’s Queer Eye. In a one-on-one interview with The Los Angeles Times, Berk went into full detail on his new book: Right at Home: How Good Design Is Good for the Mind. He discussed the inspiration for his book.

The excitement grew once Mexican actor and comedian Eugenio Derbez entered the scene. His appearance was a prelude to the screening of his new film, Radical, that night. He was honored with the Icon Award, presented by NBFF’s president and Newport Beach’s City Council.

Legends award winner William Shatner at the Newport Beach Film Festival: Sunset Series Garden Party.

Eugenio Derbez shared his origins within the Mexican entertainment industry with the crowd, as his mother was a famous telenovela star. He ended his speech with a profound statement to help bring a positive depiction of Latin Americans through the realm of film and television.

The energy was electric once television and pop culture icon William Shatner was brought to the podium. Shatner has such a commanding presence. He was honored with the Legend Award in conjunction with the festival’s screening of his new documentary, William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill. His speech had gravitas and went in an introspective direction. For many in the crowd, being in the presence of this icon was a goosebump experience (me included).

The night ended with an Orange County women’s acrobat league performance. These young ladies had a ballet-like style, twirling on tight rope and cloth. Everyone was in awe, watching this elegant ending to the evening. As the Newport Beach Film Festival ends, the anticipation for next year’s honorees in 2024 is now on the horizon!

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said on Friday that “far too many Palestinians have been killed” in Gaza, in the latest indication that the Biden administration is growing increasingly concerned about the civilian death toll under Israel’s bombardment and ground invasion.

“Much more needs to be done to protect civilians and to make sure that humanitarian assistance reaches them,” Mr. Blinken told reporters in New Delhi after a diplomatic tour through Middle Eastern and Asian nations. “Far too many Palestinians have been killed. Far too many have suffered these past weeks. And we want to do everything possible to prevent harm to them and to maximize the assistance that gets to them.”

He added that United States officials would continue to discuss “concrete steps” with Israel to recover at least 240 hostages held by Palestinian militants and get humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, which Hamas controls.

Mr. Blinken’s remarks also suggested that the Biden administration is stepping up pressure on Israel to do more to limit the harm to civilians in its campaign against Hamas, as outrage grows from the United Nations and many countries over the mounting toll in Gaza. The United States has staunchly supported Israel since Hamas attacked it on Oct. 7, killing about 1,400 people, mostly civilians, but it has also urged Israeli leaders to exercise restraint in their campaign.

President Biden cast doubt last month on the casualty figures released by the Gazan health ministry, which said this week that more than 10,000 people had been killed. But U.S. officials have acknowledged in recent days that thousands of civilians have been killed since Israel began its retaliatory campaign for the Hamas attack.

Asked about Palestinian civilians, American officials have emphasized that they do not have the ability to verify any toll, and said that Hamas uses civilians as human shields.

They have, though, made broad assessments. On Tuesday, the U.S. national security spokesman, John Kirby, told reporters, “There have been many thousands killed, and each one is a tragedy.” On Wednesday, Barbara Leaf, the assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs, told a House committee that U.S. officials thought the civilian casualties were “very high, frankly, and it could be that they’re even higher than are being cited.”

And the Biden administration has been pushing Israel to commit to humanitarian pauses so that more Palestinian civilians could flee to southern Gaza from the north, where Israel has concentrated its ground operation against Hamas. After days of pressure from U.S. officials, Israel agreed to daily four-hour pauses in some areas of northern Gaza, the White House announced on Thursday.

Mr. Kirby said the pauses would facilitate the delivery of humanitarian supplies and possibly help the release of some of the hostages held by Hamas.

American officials have also spoken about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, echoing the warnings of United Nations officials and aid workers that more than a million people have been displaced from their homes. The United Nations has called for a cease-fire, which U.S. and Israeli officials have resisted, arguing that it would give Hamas time to regroup.

The U.N. aid office said on Friday that it could no longer deliver aid to several hundred thousand Palestinians in northern Gaza, where Israel has warned people to flee and where its troops are conducting a ground operation.

“If there is a hell on earth, it’s northern Gaza,” the aid office’s spokesman, Jens Laerke, told reporters on Friday.

He said the Rafah gate, at Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, had been designed as a pedestrian crossing point and was ill-suited for large aid convoys. Only a few convoys have been able to cross the border so far, and U.N. and American officials have said that vastly more is needed to help civilians in Gaza, who face dwindling supplies of food, clean water and medicine.

Forget Valentine’s Day, Singles Day is this weekend! For the uninitiated, Singles Day is a counter-holiday to Valentine’s Day where people who are single just spend quality time (and money) on themselves. The holiday lands on Nov. 11 every year because 11/11 looks like four individual people standing alone, as if they were single.

It’s one of the biggest shopping holidays in Asia and it’s coming to America, thanks to AliExpress. Similar to Amazon Prime, the online retailer has the “Alibaba Group’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival,” which has deep discounts sitewide on self-care, beauty, tech, gaming, fashion and other shopping categories with savings up to a whopping 78% off list prices.

AliExpress has teamed up with Grammy-nominated rapper Swae Lee to mark the occasion. In fact, Swae Lee curated a handful of his favorite deals to shop for Singles Day.

“I’m excited to team up with AliExpress on Singles’ Day because to me it’s a day to celebrate self-care, self-expression, and individuality,” Swae Lee said in a statement. “My music and style have always been about being true to myself and standing out from the crowd. I believe everyone should be able to express themselves in their own unique way, and AliExpress offers a wide variety of unique products that help people do just that.”

Ahead, you’ll find some of the best Singles Day deals and Swae Lee’s picks on AliExpress.

In a guest essay for the New York Times earlier this year, Indian journalist Vidya Krishnan wrote, “[T]here is no escaping India’s rape culture; sexual terrorism is treated as the norm.” She cited a study that found more than three quarters of Indian women “who have experienced physical or sexual violence never tell anyone… Prosecutions are rare.”

There are exceptions. In 2017, after a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by three young men in the village of Bero in the Jharkhand state, her father Ranjit demanded justice. This extraordinary case is explored in the documentary To Kill a Tiger, which screened as part of Deadline’s virtual event series For the Love of Docs.

The film by Toronto-based director Nisha Pahuja has won more than 20 awards at festivals around the world. Pahuja learned of the story of Ranjit, his wife Jiganti and their daughter Kiran (a pseudonym used to protect her privacy) while working on a film in India about Indian masculinity.

Director Nisha Pahuja

“I… just began following it almost literally from the moment a few days after they had started the court case,” Pahuja explained during a panel discussion after the screening. “[I] wasn’t sure where it was going to go, what kind of access we’d have, but slowly over time started to build trust and eventually just ended up filming for a year and a half covering the entire story.”

Kiran’s three alleged attackers were arrested and jailed. But immediately Ranjit and Jiganti faced an intense campaign from villagers and officials urging them to drop the prosecution and marry off their daughter to one of the men accused of committing the sexual assault.

The film shows moments where it appears Ranjit might buckle and give up.

“There were lots of times where I thought, I don’t know if he’s going to be able to make it,” Pahuja said. “There’s just so much pressure on him and it’s perpetual and it’s continued and the tenor of it keeps raising, rising. What was so interesting about it is that when Ranjit was in the dumps and he wasn’t sure whether he was going to be able to make it, [Jiganti] was kind of bolstering his courage, or Kiran was. So, I think they got to the finish line really, because they were so unified as a family.”

To Kill a Tiger unfolds in cinematic fashion, enhanced by the photography of Mrinal Desai and the work of award-winning editor Mike Munn.

Mike Munn, recipient of Best Editing in a Feature Length Documentary | Meilleur montage dans un long métrage documentaire, attends the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards - News, Documentary, & Factual Awards ceremony at Meridian Hall on April 11, 2023 in Toronto, Ontario.

Editor Mike Munn

“It’s primarily a vérité approach,” Munn said of the filmmaking. “You’re in situ with the family often in their home, you’re there with them at the courthouse, those kinds of things. In my career, I’ve done quite a lot of scripted drama and I kind of go back and forth between drama and documentary, and I find the storytelling techniques are similar between the two. You work with tension and drama, with suspense, humor, those kinds of things. You bring to it what you would bring to any story.”

He added, “It was really looking at each scene and see what the dramatic strengths of each scene were. We’re very much in an authentic situation with them, but you still have to present the scene in a dramatic way that would be engaging for an audience.”

A moment of great tension erupts in the film when villagers surround Ranjit and Jiganti’s home, and threaten the family and the filmmakers.

“We were conscious of the fact that this could happen, but when it actually did happen, it was shocking. It was stunning, Pahuja said. “I wasn’t prepared — not for the physical confrontation — I wasn’t prepared for how it would make me feel emotionally. I wasn’t prepared for that.”

Watch the full conversation in the video above.

For the Love of Docs is a virtual Deadline event series sponsored by National Geographic in partnership with the International Documentary Association (IDA). The series continues with a new film screening each Tuesday through December 12. Next up, on November 14, is Confessions of a Good Samaritan, directed by Penny Lane.

“The Marvels” is getting ready to take flight at the box office, but it won’t be as sky-high as its predecessor “Captain Marvel” and many of its fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

The latest MCU adventure has made $6.6 million in previews at the box office. “The Marvels” is expected to make between $60 million and $65 million in its opening this weekend. It’s a far cry from Brie Larson’s first MCU outing as Captain Marvel, which opened to $153 million in 2019 from $20.7 million in Thursday previews. That movie, which ended up crossing the $1 billion mark, had the added bonus of releasing between “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” and was the first female-led MCU film.

The “Captain Marvel” sequel is also expected to fall below this year’s two previous Marvel movies, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which made $104 million and $118 million in their opening, respectively. They each made $17.5 million in Thursday previews.

The only MCU movies with smaller opening weekends than the projections for “The Marvels” are 2008’s “Incredible Hulk” ($55.4 million) and 2015’s “Ant-Man” ($57.2 million), not adjusted for inflation. That may spell trouble for “The Marvels,” which cost $220 million to produce and roughly $100 million to promote. At the international box office, it’s estimated to make $80 million for a global start of $140 million or more.

Larson returns in “The Marvels,” which co-stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as the young hero Ms. Marvel. Parris and Vellani originated their roles on the Disney+ shows “WandaVision” and “Ms. Marvel,” respectively, which makes “The Marvels” their characters’ big-screen debuts. The trio of women team up to battle the latest world-threatening villain Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), who wields the power to rip holes in the fabric of space and time.

“The Marvels” is getting ready to take

The actors strike is over, and news has emerged that a biopic of Elon Musk, directed by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, is in the works. The movie from A24 is to be based on Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Musk.

So the guessing game is on: Who would best capture the essence of the mercurial, meme-loving tech mogul on the big screen?

It won’t surprise you to learn that the internet has already chewed over this question. In a recent Reddit thread, commenters’ top-voted casting picks for Musk were: Nicolas Cage, Rami Malek, Jesse Eisenberg and Robert Downey Jr.

Other suggestions from sundry corners of the web have included Brendan Fraser (who incidentally starred in Aronofsky’s “The Whale”); Matt LeBlanc of “Friends” fame; Scottish-American actor John Barrowman (“Doctor Who,” “Torchwood”); Kevin Durand (“The Strain,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”); and Matthew Broderick.

Here are some additional thoughts:

Elon Musk as himself: The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and owner of X (aka Twitter), hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 2021 and he has taken a (brief) stab at stand-up comedy. The time commitment involved in shooting a feature-length movie would probably make this impossible, given Musk’s numerous other obligations. But Musk’s ego would be up for it.

Jon Hamm: The “Mad Men” star portrayed Musk-like tech billionaire Paul Marks in Season 3 of Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show.” Hamm’s resemblance to Musk isn’t quite on the mark, but it’s conceivable the actor could pull off a decent take on Musk’s clipped-and-mumble-y speech patterns.

An AI-generated version of Musk: This would likely amuse and intrigue Musk, who last month opined in a post on X, “Shows created with the help of AI will be extremely good.” Musk has alternately been excited about the potential of artificial intelligence (he co-founded OpenAI before exiting the company, and recently launched his own startup in the space, xAI) while also warning of the technology’s risks and saying that “AI safety is vital the future of civilization.”

Kathy Bates: The internet, like Musk himself, loves a good meme and it has been suggested more than once that Bates is a bit of a doppelganger. Fun but an obvious nonstarter.

Meanwhile, we posed the question of who would best play Musk to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The chatbot prefaced its answer with a cautionary note: “As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, it’s challenging to predict who would play Elon Musk in a movie since casting decisions depend on various factors.” ChatGPT continued, “As of my last update, potential candidates might include actors like Tom Hardy, Robert Downey Jr., or even someone not yet widely recognized but with the talent to capture Musk’s unique persona.”

Musk has launched his own AI chatbot rival to ChatGPT, dubbed Grok, but access currently is limited to verified subscribers of X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue).

Ahead of the end of the DCEU, members of the SnyderVerse Justice League teamed up in a new crossover for what might be one last ride.

With James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU reboot on the horizon, Zack Snyder’s universe of movies will come to a close, just over a decade after Man of Steel kicked off the interconnected movie universe.

David Corenswet has already been cast as the reboot’s Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan taking on Lois Lane. Reports also indicate that SnyderVerse actors Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (Flash), and Jason Momoa (Aquaman) will likely be replaced for the reboot.

Meanwhile, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the final movie in the DCEU, has seen several rumors and teases surrounding it regarding potential cameos, particularly from Gadot, with some seeming to confirm other heroes’ appearances some otherwise.

Justice League Reunited in New DC Comic

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Special #1 — the Aquaman sequel’s prequel comic — saw SnyderVerse Justice League members Wonder Woman and Flash team up with Aquaman, seemingly marking the last crossover of the DCEU team.

DC Comics

In the DC Comics story, Aquaman and Wonder Woman start off fighting with supposedly just the two of them while the former narrates that it “is weird” that he is in the Justice League “because [he’s] kind of a lone-wolf type of guy.”

A comic page of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Special Number 1 featuring Aquaman, Flash and Wonder Woman fighting together.

Flash joins the fight and gets Aquaman up to speed on “who [he is] punching here,” explaining that the goons stole  “classified information … specifically plans for something called a meta bomb.”

A comic page of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Special Number 1 featuring Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Flash fighting together.
DC Comics

Aquaman volunteers to bring a weapon that is “breached and unstable” into the Hudson, explaining, in a clever double meaning, that “when you’re a half-breed superhero who splits his time between the sea and the surface… You get used to jumping straight into the deep end.”

A comic page of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Special Number 1 featuring Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Flash talking, while on a beach a man seems to crawl onto the shore from the ocean, brooding about Aquaman.
DC Comics

Following the battle, Flash and Wonder Woman learn that Aquaman is getting married, to which Wonder Woman responds that it’s “about time.” Meanwhile, a figure crawls out of the ocean and onto the shore, saying, “Aquaman killed you, Scylla…”

What’s Next for the Justice League?

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Special #1 is the only issue of this prequel story releasing, meaning that the next official story from the SnyderVerse will more than likely be in the new movie.

As such, if one more Justice League team-up is going to happen, it would have to be in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, since the universe will be rebooted into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU immediately after.

Their slate of movies does not include a specific Justice League team-up project yet but does feature solo or smaller group stories for several famous members.

Heroes such as Superman, Batman, the Green Lantern(s), and Wonder Woman are confirmed for their own projects, and characters like Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific are set to appear in Superman: Legacy.

As such, it would not be surprising to see a fuller team-up sometime over the next few years, especially given Gunn’s propensity toward team-as-dysfunctional-family stories like the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and The Suicide Squad.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 22.

Zenless Zone Zero fans have plenty to celebrate, with the game’s release coming right around the corner and another chance to get a glimpse of the game themselves in the next beta test.

While HoYoverse hasn’t announced an official release date for their upcoming modern sci-fi game, Zenless Zone Zero has jumped through a significant hurdle toward becoming a finalized product. The gaming industry in China has a series of regulations that require game publishers to have their products screened before they can be released to the public. This mostly involves looking it over for graphic content, nudity, and whether topics covered in the title might be too offensive or a message the gaming industry does not want to portray.

But as of October, Zenless Zone Zero was among the 87 titles approved by the Chinese National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). This means that eager fans can see the game coming out with more updates on its content and release date within the coming months. For reference, it took approximately five to six months between Honkai: Star Rail’s approval by NPPA before it was released.

But that’s not all this modern-day action-adventure game has to offer since it is also rolling out its second beta test. Now that the game has completed and succeeded in its screening process, those who are lucky enough to try out the beta test will likely see a product that is the closest version of what the end result of the game will look like. Complete with characters to try out, parts of the story to explore, and not to mention the world exploration that HoYoverse has become greatly renowned for, the beta is sure to be a fun, and maybe buggy, time for those who sign up and are asked to play.

As always, there will be a limited amount of players that are allowed to test the game, progress will not be saved or transferred to the official accounts when the game is released, and it is ill-advised to share anything about the game unless it is feedback to the game developers. The beta is still a work-in-progress game, and anything posted about it is considered to be a leak, which HoYoverse is taking much more seriously.

Aside from the beta, Zenless Zone Zero is wasting no time in building up hype around the game again by rolling out web events to promote the beta test sign-up as well as some more promotional videos. Between now and the release date, we will likely see Zenless Zone Zero come out with a preregistration campaign alongside web and in-person events, as HoYoverse has done with their other games in previous years.

Zenless Zone Zero is beginning to pick up with many events that are heading towards its fanbase, so be sure to keep an eye out on the game’s official X (formerly known as Twitter) to keep up to date with each news drop.

Sacha Jenkins and Raquel Cepeda’s Resurgent Pictures has partnered with Imagine Documentaries to develop and co-produce film, television and documentaries.

The partnership with the nonfiction division of Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment and Resurgent Pictures is a multi-year agreement.

Headed by Sara Bernstein, Imagine Documentaries recently co-produced Jenkins’ “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues.” The Apple TV+ docu, which debuted at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival in 2022, explores the life and art of the legendary jazz performer.

“We’ve had an empowering experience with Imagine and are delighted to be working with them on future projects,” Jenkins and Cepeda said in a joint statement. “We believe our companies share a commitment to pushing the boundaries of storytelling, and this collaboration will amplify our creative capabilities. Having their support is just killer.”

Jenkins and Capeda, who are married, launched Resurgent Pictures in 2022 as a boutique production company that develops and produces documentary, scripted and commercial content. Under the banner, they have produced a slate of projects including “The Walking Dead: Generation Dead” and “Bitchin’: The Sound and Fury of Rick James.”

The duo will develop and produce projects with the full resources of the Imagine Documentaries, which currently has its own first-look output deal with Amazon Studios.

“I am thrilled to extend our collaboration with Resurgent Pictures,” says Bernstein. “Working with Sacha and Raquel has been an incredibly rewarding experience, collectively and individually they are exceptionally talented storytellers and documentarians, and this first-look deal solidifies our commitment to discovering and producing exciting new content together.”

Currently, Resurgent and Imagine are developing a docuseries chronicling the world’s top female boxers as they fight individually for dominance and legacy, as they take the sport mainstream. Cepeda is a two-time national Golden Glove winner.

Resurgent Pictures is represented by WME.

The chain of ownership here gets a tad convoluted, so stick with me: This romantic comedy from 2014 loosely remakes the yuppie-rom-com from 1986 starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, which was itself a loose adaptation of the 1974 play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” by David Mamet. Tropes about the battle of the sexes are so established, it seems, that a decades-old play can still yield both laughs and moments of truth. But as with the 1986 film, the most entertaining material is provided less by the central couple (here played by the perfectly acceptable Joy Bryant and Michael Ealy) than by their broadly comic B.F.F.s, memorably brought to life by Regina Hall and Kevin Hart.

Stream it here.

Before he took on the massive challenge of bringing “Dune” to the big screen, the director Denis Villeneuve took his first crack at science fiction with this thoughtful 2016 exploration of the possibilities of extraterrestrial contact. While most filmmakers seize on the threat of life from beyond, focusing on alien invasions and property damage, Villeneuve’s film (adapted from Ted Chiang’s novella “Story of Your Life”) probes deeper, as a linguist (Amy Adams) works tirelessly to establish communication with the alien life-forms before narrow-minded military types jump to the wrong conclusions. Her struggle is a vivid and dramatic one, and the concluding passages are both narratively ingenious and deeply moving.

Stream it here.

Denzel Washington crafts one of his finest performances in this 2016 adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by August Wilson — and matches the force of his acting with his graceful and nuanced work as the picture’s director. He stars as Troy Maxson, once a rising star in the Negro leagues, now a husband and father who spends his days in a stew of regret, dissatisfaction and deception. His complicated relationships with his best friend (Stephen McKinley Henderson), his wife (Viola Davis) and his son (Jovan Adepo) form the story’s dramatic spine, as the tales Troy has long told others, and himself, about who he is come to a head. It’s a penetrating and powerful drama, and Davis’s subtle work landed her an Oscar for best supporting actress.

Stream it here.

The setup was so juicy — Steven Spielberg directing Robin Williams as Peter Pan, with Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook and Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell — that it had to be either a masterpiece or a grave disappointment. It felt like the latter when “Hook” landed in theaters in 1991; critics dismissed it as a mess, and the box office, while respectable, was disappointing. But children of that era (who were, let’s face it, the target audience) fell for it hard, wearing out their VHS tapes and forming lifelong attachments to Spielberg and Williams. Bring it up to Millennials sometime, and watch them start chanting for Rufio.

Stream it here.

If you’d like a more straightforward family film, it’s hard to top this charming 1999 adaptation of E.B. White’s children’s book (co-written, improbably enough, by the suspense master M. Night Shyamalan). The ostensible stars are Jonathan Lipnicki (“Jerry Maguire”) and, as his parents, Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie — but the comic juice is supplied by the talented voice cast: David Alan Grier, Nathan Lane, Chazz Palminteri and Steve Zahn as streetwise cats; Bruno Kirby and Jennifer Tilly as paternal mice; and Michael J. Fox as the unfailingly upbeat titular mouse.

‘About Last Night’ (Nov. 30)Stream it here. The

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios‘ sequel, The Marvels, has clocked around $6.5M in Thursday night previews we hear from sources. Disney will be reporting their official figure this morning and we’ll update you then. Previews began at 3PM.

The fear out there by many is that this $200M budgeted sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel –which stands as the highest grossing female superhero movie of all-time–could clock the lowest start ever stateside for a Marvel Studios movie; lower than The Incredible Hulk (which was a Universal release before Disney absorbed the MCU) which had a $55.4M start. While tracking took its projections down from $80M to $60M for The Marvels, there is a concern out there that The Marvels could see a $40M+ start.

At $6.5M that’s one of the lower previews we’ve seen in recent times from Marvel, just one notch above Ant-Man ($6.4M, $57.2M) and lower than Disney November misfires The Eternals ($9.5M previews, $71.2M opening) and Thor: Dark World ($7.1M previews, $85.7M).

Advance ticket sales of $5M indicated The Marvels was flying into The Flash‘s territory opening wise. However, The Flash‘s preview figure was higher at $9.7M off showtimes that began at 3PM Thursday.

Critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are at 61% fresh, but the RT audience score is higher at 85% — which is promising, however, the die-hards always come out on Thursday night. Thursday night PostTrak exits from ComScore/Screen Engine were severe for general audiences at 3.5 stars, but 4 1/2 stars from parents and 5 stars from kids under 12. That said, kids and parents combined only repped 9% of last night’s audience. The Marvels skewed guys at 63% with men over 25 the biggest turnout at 45% and women over 25 at 24%. That latter demo gave the best recommendation grades of any demo at 61%.

There’s a cacophony of reasons why The Marvels isn’t playing to better levels, one of them being the recently ended actors strike which stifled the pic’s promotion at San Diego and NY Comic-Cons. In the last two days since the strike ended, the pic’s cast is in a whirlwind to show up on late night TV (Brie Larson set to appear on The Tonight Show tonight) and also show up at movie-theaters; Iman Vellani and director Nia DaCosta doing so yesterday at Hollywood’s El Captain.

Larson given the strike’s end can finally scream to the world that The Marvels are here:

Another movie set to crash this weekend is Sony/Affirm’s faith-based musical Journey to Bethlehem which earned $250K last night from previews that began at 2PM from 1,823 locations. The pic is set to arrive in the low single digits.

Tiwa Savage reveals five things you didn’t know about her to Billboard!

Tiwa Savage:
Hey, what’s up, everyone? This is Tiwa Savage, and these are five things you may or may not know about me.

I hate wearing heels. I love performing barefoot.

My favorite food is bread. I know, bad carbs. I know. I know. I know.

OK, sometimes, I’m actually not the one that runs my Instagram or my social media pages.

Well, I’m a very, very, very boring person. When I’m not on stage or doing interviews like this, I am literally in my room watching series.

And my favorite series right now is Downtown Abbey.

And those are five things you may not know about me, but you do now.

(What is the Black Lives Matter Movement?) y “Las confesiones de Nat Turner” (The Confessions of Nat Turner).

The plight of a disabled woman on Montreal’s South Shore is an ominous example of the effects of the housing crisis on the most vulnerable.

Anne Marie Jobin, 45, is having trouble paying for both rent and her basic needs. She is desperate to get into social housing but has run into multiple barriers.

Born with spina bifada, Jobin is paralyzed from the waist down. She is essentially bedridden in her grim Greenfield Park apartment.

“I’ve been through hell in the last four years, to be honest with you,” she said in an interview.

Jobin says earlier this year her landlord increased her rent from around $800 per month to about $1,000 per month, and that she never received notice because she was in hospital at the time.

She is on welfare and says she now can’t make ends meet.

“It’s either ‘Do I eat this month?’ or ‘Do I pay the bills this month?’” she said.

Jobin says in July, she mistakenly signed a letter from her landlord agreeing to vacate the unit by Nov. 1.

“I was probably not aware at the time of what I was signing or I didn’t understand it,” she said.

Jobin’s mother, who lived a few doors down from her, died last year. Her father is doing his best to help, but is also battling health issues.

“She is hopeless, helpless, hopeless. She doesn’t know what to do and she’s afraid,” René Jobin said.

Jobin says her social worker has been trying to get her a spot in social housing to no avail.

“He has knocked on every door and there’s nothing open,” she said.

Housing rights advocate Cedric Dussault says she is far from alone.

“In Quebec in general, there are over 40,000 people who are on a waiting list for social housing,” said Dussault, who speaks for the Coalition of Housing Committees and Tenants Associations of Quebec.

Dussault said many vulnerable tenants who don’t know their rights sign documents without being aware of the consequences.

“Never sign something right on the spot when you’re not sure what you’re agreeing to,” he said. “There’s a lot of people who are misinformed about their own rights and face pressures from their landlords.”

He says it’s been decades since governments have made meaningful investments in social housing

“A quarter of homeless people right now are in the streets because they have been evicted from their dwelling,” he said.

Jobin’s landlord Zev Lowy of YK Realties told Global News over the phone that the higher rent she’s been paying in recent months was part of an agreed-upon payment plan after she missed a rent payment earlier this year.

Story continues below advertisement

Lowy claims the social worker was the one who asked for her lease to be broken, thinking a more suitable place for her could be found within three months, but that didn’t happen.

The CISSS de la Montérégie-Centre declined Global’s request to speak to Jobin’s social worker, citing confidentiality. Spokesperson Martine Lesage said the organization does indeed accompany home care recipients as they search for a place to live.

“I’m not the only person in this situation. The housing situation is terrible at this point,” Jobin said.

For now, Jobin is still in her apartment. The landlord told Global News he’s willing to give her an extension, and does not want to evict her without her having another place to go.

Update (11/10/23 10:03 a.m. EST) Matthew Perry’s death certificate was released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health following his October 28 passing. According to E! News, who obtained the certificate, Matthew’s cause of death is still “deferred.” The certificate reveals he died on October 28 at 4:17 p.m. at his home in Pacific Palisades, California. Matthew was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, which is near Warner Bros. Studios where he filmed Friends, the certificate states.

Update (11/1/23 10:05 a.m. EST): While Matthew Perry’s toxicology report is still being completed, he reportedly did not have fentanyl or meth in his system, a law enforcement source told TMZ. Law enforcement officials who reported to the scene reportedly ran a quick test to see if he had either drug in his system, and they both came back negative. The results of the full toxicology report may not be ready for up to six months, and it will determine if there were other illegal drugs in his system.

Update (10/31/23 3:47 p.m. EST): Following Matthew’s passing, police revealed that his cause of death was still “pending investigation” in a statement to The New York Times. They said there were still no signs of foul play. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner also revealed that the autopsy was complete, but they are still awaiting the results of a toxicology report, according to People.

Original Story: New details are coming in about Matthew Perry‘s shocking death at the age of 54 on October 28. Prescription drugs, but no illicit drugs, were found at his Los Angeles, CA area home, where he died, according to TMZ. Authorities apparently told the outlet they found anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) drug in the house. COPD drugs are prescribed for people who suffer from breathing diseases, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, and the Friends actor was known for being a smoker, which is one of the causes of the diseases.

The new information about the RX drugs reportedly found in Matthew’s home comes after he reportedly played two hours of pickleball near his home on Saturday. Sources told the outlet that he was in “good spirits” during the game and shortly after it was done, his assistant picked up a new iPhone for him as well as prescription glasses. The assistant reportedly returned to his home two hours later and found him unresponsive in his jacuzzi before calling 911. They then also apparently called Matthew’s mother, one of his siblings, and an unrelated woman.

Matthew’s parents were seen outside his home just a few hours after his death made headlines. They looked somber as they sat in a car before and after going into his residence. At one point, Matthew’s stepfather, Keith Morrison, was seen walking outside among police and photographers.

Matthew’s death has left his family, friends, and fans heartbroken. Although his Friends co-stars have yet to publicly make statements about his passing, he was known to be close to some of them over the years. The talented star was also very open about his struggles with drug addiction, which started in his 20s, and wrote a memoir about his journey called Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing in 2022.

When Power Lawyer Bob Darwell isn’t working on deals for clients like Amazon Studios, Nickelodeon and Wondery, he’s a documentarian.

Darwell’s latest film, Black Uniform, tells the story of 12 Black men and women who served in the U.S. military during major conflicts dating back to World War II — including 104-year-old Romay Davis, who served in the 6888th, the only all-Black female battalion that was sent overseas during World War II, and former former Congressman Charles Rangel, who received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service in the Korean War. (Watch the trailer here.)

It won best documentary at the Los Angeles Documentary Film Festival, Orlando Urban Film Festival and Diamond State Film Festival, and received the Luminary Award at the L.A. Awareness Film Festival.

Darwell’s first doc, The 90s Club, debuted at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in April 2022 and won best documentary at the Manhattan Film Festival, among other honors. It centers on a dozen “very well-aged” people in their 90s, and is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. and U.K.

In honor of Veterans Day, Black Uniform is screening at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival on Friday, and there will be a free cookout for veterans and their families. On Nov. 18, the doc will play at the Montgomery Film Festival, which Darwell says he’s especially excited for because Davis is attending.

Darwell spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about making the films, finding his subjects and what’s next on his to-doc list.

Bob Darwell

Why did you decide to start making documentaries?

The 90s Club I always had some inspiration for in the back of my mind. I wanted to do something to promote the wisdom and vitality of the very well-aged. My parents had passed away a couple of years ago, and it was kind of more and more in my head that I wanted to do something to kind of attack ageism. I wound up talking with a dozen people who were in their 90s. I focused on that group because many people live into their 80s now. You think of somebody who’s 90, and most of us think they’re not having an active life, but quite a few people are very engaged in the world. That work-from-home time [during the COVID-19 shutdown] gave me the freedom on the weekends to go make this documentary.

What inspired Black Uniform?

In making the first one, I kind of got a little bit of the bug. This is a lot of fun and I am loving the oral history part of it, and getting people’s stories, and then editing it into something that can be shared with a broader audience. I knew that I wanted to do something that would benefit veterans. My father served in the Army during the Korean War, but it was not really anything that we ever talked about while he was alive. So, I thought I would do something historical about people serving in the different wars.

The last interview that I did for The 90s Club was with Fred Gray, who last fall got the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Joe Biden. He was a civil rights attorney who helped Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, and represented them on all of their major cases. During that interview he talked about his experience with the draft. Since I was already going to be interviewing people from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam and Desert Storm, I thought that I would focus on black men and women who had served.

How many people did you end up talking to?

I repeated again with 12 for Black Uniform. Two from World War II, a Tuskegee Airman, who was 96 when I interviewed him. He’s now 97. [There’s] a woman that served in the Six Triple Eight, which I think Netflix is doing a scripted feature on. It is the only female black battalion that served overseas during World War II. She was 102 when I interviewed her. She’s 104 now. [There are] two from Korean War, two from Vietnam, a few from Desert Storm, and a woman who’s presently serving who was the first female black Army Ranger.

How did you find these people?

With The 90s Club it was all kind of word of mouth. Me telling people that I was going to do that film and someone would say ‘You should talk to my grandmother.’ Apart from Dick Van Dyke, who I targeted from the outset. I mentioned to someone in the office that I wanted it to be regular folks, but my dream would be to have Dick Van Dyke. They said ‘Oh, I see him sometimes at the gym.’ When they ran into him, they asked if he would participate, and I called him the next day.

For Black Uniform, it was a little bit more targeted because I knew I wanted at least two people from each conflict going back to World War II. So, that involved a little bit more research.

What is your favorite story from Black Uniform?

While it focuses on black men and women that served in the military, it really just brings attention to the fact that no veteran has the same story. Some encounter a life of disability afterward, or post-traumatic stress. One of the women I interviewed is one of the 28 percent of women who are sexually assaulted during their term of service.

The nature of discrimination against black veterans has changed over time. World War II was segregated. Now what what you see is that black veterans maybe have a harder time accessing the benefits that they’re entitled to.

Veterans are a group that doesn’t really receive the appropriate appreciation and recognition and attention that they deserve. A lot of people go into the military to obtain those benefits — schooling, to have a pension if you’ve served 20 years — and then be able to start something new afterward. It’s really tough to hear that people who put themselves on the line like that have challenges in obtaining those benefits. They have to navigate the administrative organizations and deal with the bureaucracy of doing that. A lot of times they don’t really have a support system that helps them with that

Do you have a third documentary in the works or an idea for another one?

I do, yeah. I think the third and final one of this style of 12 oral history interviews would be Crowning Achievement, which would be former Miss Americas from the various decades. There is a woman in Minnesota who’s in her early 90s who won in the late 1940s. [It would] get a perspective of Miss America from the 40s to present day. The nature of that pageant, or perception of it, has changed pretty dramatically from when I was a kid. It was always one of the most watched shows of the year, and now I don’t think I’ve seen it in a decade or two.

So, [it would be] a little bit about the nature of the pageant, and what motivated these women to enter. Many have gone on to really achieve amazing accomplishments using that platform. I think that Lee Meriwether (Batman: The Movie) was the winner during [one of] the first televised Miss America pageants. The most successful probably is the one who lost her crown, Vanessa Williams. Gretchen Carlson was a Miss America. I’m going to focus on the ones who won, looking back at how it helped their lives or hindered it in some way.

What’s up next?

I was asked by the producing team of Lia Rodriguez and Pilar de Posadas to direct Snow Angels: Alaska’s Fierce Female Flyers.  I’m heading to Anchorage at the beginning of December to start filming the documentary about the women pilots of the Arctic.

Interview edited for length and clarity.

When Power Lawyer Bob Darwell isn’t working

Billboard advertising is more than a century old — how can the industry be modernized to fit into the digital landscape of 2023?

Dan Levi, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Clear Channel Outdoor, is answering that very question. During Variety Studio presented by Canva at Advertising Week, Levi spoke with his colleague Nolan Panno, manager of research and insights, and Claudia Chang, director of product operations at Radar, about their evolving industry.

“We’re in the billboard business, it’s literally the world’s oldest advertising medium,” Levi said. “Oftentimes, people talk about legacy media as if it was a negative. I love the fact that we’re building on the positives and the strengths and the power of our media, but bringing it into the 21st century and modernizing it. And the only way to do that is to bring in people who have a different perspective, different background, a different view on it.”

Levi added, “So our data platform is called Radar. And what we try to do with Radar is be able to measure any kind of outcome that our clients are looking to drive with billboard advertising.”

Panno noted that it’s a collaborative process for the Clear Channel team, with some employees working on research, like himself, and others focused on data, like Chang.

Chang said of their company ethos and dynamic, “Something we say a lot is that nothing is really sacred, there are no holy cows, we really like to be vulnerable and learn from each other. Because every single day, we teach each other something new, and learn something from each other.”

Levi spoke more about updating the billboard business to adapt to our technological age, bridging gaps between the material and the digital.

“The things that are most exciting to me, and certainly from a more contemporary standpoint is connecting the physical world of billboards with digital behaviors,” he said. “So app downloads, app usage, online conversions, being able to prove something that we all know, because we go about it in our daily lives…we carry a phone with us and we respond to the world around us.”

Panno said that the company can take inspiration from social media platforms: “There’s a lot to learn from the short form content that people are creating on YouTube, TikTok, whichever platform you you might choose. And it’s the ability to tell a story in a really succinct way, a very clear way — in many cases, less than 60 seconds.”

Chang furthered the conversation by explaining that Clear Channel can look to the long history of billboards to improve their brand.

“And to tie that back to data, because I have to, in thinking about user generated content, we as a company have a century of content that we have been building and displaying…really thinking about how to take that, and then translate that into brand goals. And again, going back to that impact point, there’s a lot that we can do in terms of contextual targeting, to understand what drives a really good campaign, what’s really resonating between all the different generations or the target audience.”

Billboard advertising is more than a century

THE CAROLINA CHOCOLATE Drops and many others have now ensured that future generations can see themselves onstage but, once up there, such Black performers rarely see themselves in the crowd. Do Black artists need a Black audience? It’s a longstanding debate that sometimes pits the artistic against the sociopolitical functions of song. The writer Amiri Baraka once defined Black music as “American music expanded past the experience of the average American.” “It gets down,” he wrote. “It is about the life of the downed, yet its dignity is in the fantastic sophistication even at the moment of would-be, should-be humiliation and actual despair.” Giddens, who once described her music as “Black non-Black music” and now prefers to call it simply “American music,” understands this implicitly. “All the good things that come from American music [come from] mixture,” she says. “Hiding in plain sight in all the different types of American music is cross-cultural working-class collaboration. It’s people making music because that’s what they’ve got.”

The most powerful folk music has always addressed points of tension: between Black and white, rich and poor, sophistication and humiliation. Cannon’s 1927 song “Can You Blame the Colored Man?” tells the story of Booker T. Washington, the founder of the Tuskegee Institute, dining with President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House in 1901, the year Washington’s best-selling autobiography, “Up From Slavery,” was published. “Could you blame the colored man for makin’ them goo-goo eyes?” Cannon sings, after describing in detail the lavish dinner at the president’s table. Likewise, today’s best folk music still confronts issues of race and class. In 2019 Amythyst Kiah, now 36, a guitarist and banjo player from Tennessee, joined Giddens, along with Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell, in a string-band collective called Our Native Daughters. They decided to excavate American history, going back to the trans-Atlantic slave trade to find inspiration for new songs. One of the songs that came of that process was the startling and soulful “Black Myself.”

I don’t pass the test of the paper bag
’Cause I’m Black myself
I pick the banjo up and they sneer at me
’Cause I’m Black myself
You better lock your doors when I walk by
’Cause I’m Black myself
You look me in my eyes but you don’t see me
’Cause I’m Black myself

The brown paper bag test, as the literary scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. has written, was born out of colorism within the Black community, in nightclubs and house parties in New Orleans where anyone darker than the bag taped to the door would be denied entrance. In a song that confronts the experience of being shut out of traditionally white spaces — such as contemporary folk and country music — Kiah’s lyrics build toward resistance and joy: “I’ll stand my ground and smile in your face / ’Cause I’m Black myself.”

Addressing her race so explicitly in her music was a departure for Kiah. “I’ve always written songs in a way where anybody can put themselves in that position,” she says. Throughout her years of playing, she’s subscribed to the theory that the more specific and personal a song’s perspective, the more a listener — any listener — will relate to it. Just as Kiah, no poor white Southern girl from rural Kentucky, could relate to Loretta Lynn’s 1970 single “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” she says, so she hopes that listeners, whomever they may be, will relate to “Black Myself.”

Loki’s Season 2 finale on Disney+ included an important reference to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

In many ways, Ant-Man 3 was the result of events from Loki Season 1 due to the presence of Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror and the reveal of He Who Remains’ promise of countless versions of himself.

Now, in true Loki fashion, the God of Mischief’s Disney+ series just brought things full circle by including a key connection to the MCU’s first Phase 5 film.

Loki Season 2’s Ant-Man 3 Reference Explained

Warning – This article contains spoilers for the finale of Loki Season 2.

Marvel

Towards the end of Loki Season 2’s final episode, and while at the new TVA following Loki’s decision to manage the timelines, Mobius actually references Kang the Conqueror’s death from Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

In the scene, Mobius tells Hunter B-15 “I got those reports on the Variants of He Who Remains.”

When B-15 asks whether “any of them know that we exist yet?”, a reference to the other Kang Variants throughout the multiverse, Mobius admits one “caused a little bit of a ruckus on 616-adjacent realm, but they handled it:”

“Nope. I guess one of ’em caused a little bit of a ruckus on 616-adjacent realm, but they handled it. So we’re all good for now.”

B-15 answers, saying, “That’s all we can ask for.”

Kang death in Ant-Man Quantumania
Marvel

The Variant who “caused a little bit of a ruckus” and on “616” – the numerical universe designation for the prime MCU- sounds like the ending of Ant-Man 3 where Kang is sucked into his very own Multiversal Power Core.

Meanwhile, B-15’s question of whether “any of them know that we exist yet?” confirms the presence of other Kang Variants, something He Who Remains warned Loki about during their earlier exchange in the episode.

What Loki’s Ant-Man 3 Connection Means for Multiverse Saga

While this conversation between Mobius and Hunter B-15 was a welcome example of MCU connectivity, it also clarified a few things for fans moving forward.

First of all, while Loki saved the day and the Multiverse, that doesn’t mean the threat of Kang Variants no longer exists.

In fact, in saving the timelines, they’re now allowed to exist and the TVA is aware of the danger they pose.

Secondly, this scene shows the Kang Variants don’t yet know about the TVA, and B-15 and Mobius are hoping to keep it that way.

But even though the TVA is “good for now,” it’s unlikely to remain under the radar for long.

Still, for the moment, only the Ant-Man 3 cast, Loki, and the TVA know about Kang. The question now as the Multiverse unfolds is who in the MCU will be next to encounter a time-lord Variant.

It’s pretty common in Hollywood to find directors and auteurs who have a specific sound that comes with their work. Their films contain scores and soundtracks that create an instant connection with their work. The music for their films is part of their identity. This includes pairings such as Steven Spielberg and John Williams, Tim Burton and Danny Elfman, and Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann, to name a few.

Christopher Nolan’s films are broad, to say the least. They are epic, often overwhelming works of art that are as visually stunning as they are sweeping in scope and subject matter. Of course, the scores that accompany such grand stories play a crucial role in creating the final result of the film. Nolan has worked with only a few composers, although, despite what many people think, they aren’t all Hans Zimmer.

Here are the best scores from Christopher Nolan’s filmography, ranked.

10 Memento (2000) — David Julyan

For Nolan’s breakout film, the suspenseful thriller Memento, he hired English musician and composer David Julyan. Memento follows Leonard Shelby, a man with a rare type of short term amnesia, where he forgets what just happened only a few minutes before, and only remembers his life from years ago. He uses photographs, tattoos, and notes to help him find the person who murdered his wife. Julyan also made his Hollywood debut in this film, with a score that consists mostly of synthesizer pieces that vary in style depending on which timeline they play in.

What Makes It Great

The film runs on two timelines, one in black and white, the other in color. One moves backward through time and the other forward. Julyan’s electronic blend is a solid element that is used sparsely, but effectively. The style of the music used in each timeline is distinct, which works for two reasons: on one hand, it further distinguishes between the two timelines, making the movie easier for viewers to follow, and on the other, it reflects the fractured experience of the world that Leonard is having. The most notable track is the haunting and sad song, “Leonard and Natalie.”

Memento is available to stream on Tubi and on Prime Video

In Nolan’s The Prestige, the director enters the world of stage magic, and brings to life a vastly underrated film about the conflict between the central characters Alfred and Robert, who are two rival illusionists driven by greed and ambition. The problem is that one of them understands his limits, while the other will try anything to beat his competitor, even experimenting with “dark science.” The score was again composed by David Julyan, Nolan’s composer for his first films.

What Makes It Great

Perhaps it’s not as popular as other scores in Nolan’s filmography, but the great thing about Julyan’s work in The Prestige is that it perfectly fits with the elements of wonder present and awe in the film due to its focus on magic. All the musical pieces are constructed as a buildup for something bigger that is about to take place. Notable track: the string-heavy title song “The Prestige.”

After a break that lasted a couple of years following Dunkirk‘s release, Nolan went back to action thrillers and delivered Tenet, a film that takes a number of viewings to get your head around. In the movie, an ex-CIA agent becomes a spy for a secret organization with the intention of stopping an attack using time-bending techniques. The very confusing film, starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, was Nolan’s first collaboration with Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson.

What Makes It Great

Göransson’s score follows the style of Nolan’s fast-paced script. The music never feels like it stops, because the film itself doesn’t give the audience room to breathe. The soundtrack is frantic, heavily percussive, and features an electronic backdrop that goes well against the occasional use of melodic symphonies. Notable track: “Trucks in Place,” which has very interesting beat shifts.

Tenet is available to rent or buy on Prime Video

For the first entry of his Batman series, Batman Begins, Nolan hired Hans Zimmer to do the score — and Zimmer invited a friend along. Together with James Newtown Howard, Zimmer presented Nolan with an impressive soundtrack that embodies the adventurous but chaotic nature of the film. Batman Begins is the story of how Bruce Wayne goes from a normal citizen into a masked vigilante, after being faced with a Gotham City that has descended into corruption.

What Makes It Great

Zimmer and Howard are, without question, two geniuses at work. Zimmer uses his signature percussion-and-string style to add a solid backdrop of sound to the film’s action sequences, while the film’s underrated melancholic side is powered by Howard’s melodic composition style. Notable track: the sweeping and surprisingly delicate “Lasiurus.”

Two years after his Hollywood debut, Nolan would come back with another thriller. Insomnia is a gloomy and underrated crime procedural that features Al Pacino and Robin Williams in a story about a police detective investigating a murder in a small town in Alaska when, suddenly, the killer starts blackmailing him. For Nolan’s film, David Julyan would come back as a composer, after his first work on Memento.

What Makes It Great

Julyan’s composing work for Insomnia is truly one of the best of his entire career. He uses traditional symphonic sounds to add emotional power to the film, and very often he uses nothing but a piano to accompany the main character’s descent into the darkness of his circumstances. This is one of the most ambient and atmospheric scores in Nolan’s oeuvre. Notable track: the achingly sad and well-titled “Let Me Sleep.”

Howard and Zimmer would return for The Dark Knight, Nolan’s sequel to Batman Begins, which pits Batman against his most iconic villain: The Joker. However, Gotham City’s corruption is also a huge player in what many consider to be the greatest superhero film ever made, and the greatest Best Picture Oscar snub.

What Makes it Great

The composer duo raises the stakes here with a much deeper musical background. The progression and improvement are notable in the action sequences for which Zimmer pumps up the bass and the volume of electronic sound effects. Howard’s collaboration is noteworthy in the film’s various dramatic sequences. Notable tracks: the Joker’s theme, also known as “Why so serious,” as well as “Like a dog chasing cars,” which features the franchise’s iconic theme.

4 Oppenheimer (2023) — Ludwig Göransson

Cast

Main Genre
Biography

Ludwig Göransson was chosen again by Nolan for his latest film, the historical epic Oppenheimer. The film is, unsurprisingly, about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist responsible for creating the atomic bomb in The Manhattan Project, and his further association with the Communist underworld. It has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, with some reviews calling it a masterpiece.

What Makes It Great

Göransson’s work on Oppenheimer is beautiful. The composer uses a musical style that makes us imagine the impossible with otherworldly sounds, occasional warbling lilts, and sustained melodic notes. However, when it’s time to address the chaotic nature of the story, Göransson engages in violent string music, an extremely varied blend of instruments, and heavy bass sounds. The music of Oppenheimer is invasive because it’s supposed to be, and it syncs well with the film’s impressive sound design. Notable track: the melodic yet frenetic piece “Can you hear the music?”

For the World War II epic Dunkirk, Nolan incorporates Hans Zimmer’s signature percussion to add a music layer to a film that was already tense. The story is an account of the events surrounding the evacuation of Allied troops in Dunkirk when the Germans had surrounded the North of France and escape operations had to be attempted by sea and air. The film received eight nominations at the Academy Awards, winning three of them, and proving Nolan’s masterful ability to create high-scale sequences using traditional filmmaking.

What Makes It Great

Zimmer’s Oscar nomination for Best Original Score for his work on Dunkirk is well-deserved. The composer’s work is a unique soundtrack to a film that features very little dialogue and runs like a ticking time bomb with no visible countdown. The style consists of his usual frantic tracks and the use of percussive sounds by improbable instruments in the orchestra. Notable track: the great and madness-inducing “Supermarine.”

If there’s one word that can be used to categorize Nolan’s body of work, that word would be “epic.” Everything he does is of massive size and scope, and no film of his feels irrelevant or easy to consume. The science fiction film Interstellar, about a man trying to save humanity by exploring the opportunities that outer space can bring, is a beautiful film that goes beyond the rule book to accomplish a very emotional experience. Nolan’s film, largely about what it means to be a father, is scored by the always-impressive Hans Zimmer.

What Makes It Great

Interstellar brought in another Oscar nomination for the composer, who created a soundtrack that exudes emotion and could be compared to the sound of dreams and imagination powering up. He uses melodic ranges that feature traditional sci-fi symphonic sounds, but he also manages to support the entire film on a lullaby-like melody that increases in power as the movie goes on. How this one lost at the Academy Awards in 2014 is beyond understanding.

Interstellar is available to stream on Prime Video and on Paramount+

For one of Nolan’s most beloved movies, Inception, Zimmer incorporates the element of time into the score and he experiments a little with the use of songs and music. After all, how would you create a score for dreams and their manipulation according to will? Inception tells the story of a gang of thieves who use a futuristic device to infiltrate and plant thoughts on a subconscious level, through dreams. It is Nolan’s most mind-bending film, and is a groundbreaking sci-fi thriller that many consider to be the best of his filmography to date.

What Makes It The Best

The score is, without question, Zimmer’s most interesting work of his entire career. Even though he didn’t win the Oscar that night, it’s his most iconic piece of work and the most acclaimed track in his live concerts.

The work by the composer consists of heavy bass and string sounds that translate the magnitude of the worlds portrayed in the film. This is the sound of limbo, of the imagination, of dreams literally collapsing as characters navigate the various levels of the subconscious. Time is cleverly slowed down in a very important Edith Piaf song featured in the film (“Non, je ne regrette rien”), and Zimmer incorporates this particular track into the score. Notable tracks: the very famous piece “Dream is Collapsing,” and the timeless and emotional “Time.”

Inception is available to rent or buy on Prime Video.

It's pretty common in Hollywood to find

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is about to cross the billion-dollar mark upon its re-release, and all of Hollywood is watching, stunned.

Three-hour, R-rated, biopics are not supposed to be the bog of a hit, but here we are, watching the money roll in.

Oppenheimer has become a movie everyone is talking about with awards season rolling in. With popularity at the box office bolstering it, it may have been a hit that Hollywood needed.

Not only is it an original film from an auteur director, but it is a serious movie that is in line to win multiple Academy Awards. It, along with Barbie, seems to have revived cinema.

Nolan on the Success of ‘Oppenheimer’

It wasn’t just Hollywood surprised by Oppenheimer, but Nolan himself was reportedly stunned by the box office. He told Variety, “With certain films, your timing is just right in ways that you never could have predicted. When you start making a film, you’re two or three years out from when it’s going to be released, so you’re trying to hit a moving target as far as the interest of the audience. But sometimes you catch a wave and the story you’re telling is one people are waiting for.”

Of course, with all this attention can come controversy. Oppenheimer has a script that was written in the first person and tells the singular story of what Oppenheimer experienced while making the atomic bomb.

Nolan Always Intended to Write ‘Oppenheimer’ in First Person Point of View

Many were upset that the film did not fully depict the results of dropping that bomb, even if it did have a sequence where the character of Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) saw charred bodies.

“The film presents Oppenheimer’s experience subjectively,” Nolan said. “It was always my intention to rigidly stick to that. Oppenheimer heard about the bombing at the same time that the rest of the world did. I wanted to show somebody who is starting to gain a clearer picture of the unintended consequences of his actions. It was as much about what I don’t show as what I show.”

Many people have been waiting for Nolan to directly address this since the film came out. I think this is a pretty good answer as to why those scenes are not in the movie.

Obviously, film is a subjective medium, so your own experience matters. But knowing that Nolan had artistic and storytelling intentions behind it should matter.

Nolan on Fiction Over Historical Accuracy

When it comes to the real-life Oppenheimer worrying about creating the bomb, people are split. While it seems he had some regret, he never said anything publicly to that effect.

According to Nolan, “My research and my engagement with this story tell me that anyone claiming a simple answer is in denial of a lot of the facts,” he said. “Obviously, it would be much better for the world if it hadn’t happened. But so much of the attitude toward the bombing depends on the situation of the individual answering the question. When you speak to people whose relatives were fighting in the Pacific, you get one answer. When you look at the devastating impact in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, you get another.”

At the end of the day, Nolan described the movie as an attempt to reconcile his feelings with the creation of the bomb. “The film is an honest attempt to express my feelings about it.”

I think we can all agree that great films purposefully dissect these emotions and ask the audience to make judgment calls themselves.

Let me know what you think about all of this in the comments.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is about to cross

To witness Emma Stone’s latest leading role in a TV series, a gripping portrait of self-delusion on par with any of her Oscar-honored star turns, viewers will have to pay a hefty toll: They’ll have to sit through a predictably agonizing odyssey from two auteurs who’ve already mastered the art of making audiences squirm. Here, the creators combine their talents to reach new depths of discomfort.

Showtime series “The Curse” is a collaboration between Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie that draws from incidents in both men’s biographies. Safdie had developed an obsession with home renovation shows, while Fielder was inspired by an encounter with a stranger who claimed to have put a curse on him when he couldn’t give her any cash. (After a visit to a nearby ATM, the hex was withdrawn.) These fixations became the setting and inciting incident of “The Curse,” which stars Fielder and Stone as Asher and Whitney Siegel, a New Mexico couple attempting to turn their real estate business into a reality show. Safdie plays their scheming producer Dougie.

“The Curse” is also a coming together of two shared sensibilities. Alongside his brother Josh, Safdie has directed a series of films (“Good Time,” “Uncut Gems”) centered on unsavory protagonists who drive their own undoing, often featuring first-time actors. For his part, Fielder has made a career of blurring the lines between reality and fiction through shows like “The Rehearsal” and “Nathan for You,” unraveling onion-like layers of alienation through his own, intentionally off-putting persona. “The Curse” opens new frontiers for each artist, bringing Fielder into scripted storytelling and Safdie into television, as well as away from New York, his hometown and preferred filming location. Its creators’ themes and M.O. are nonetheless familiar — a promise to fans, and a warning to the cringe-averse.

Originally announced as a half-hour comedy, “The Curse” instead unfolds like an hourlong drama over its 10-episode season. (Fielder directs seven of these installments, with brothers David and Nathan Zellner co-helming the remaining three.) Fielder’s previous work is compact and episodic, countering the excruciating spectacle of his stunts with consistent structure, small doses and a guiding voiceover. “The Curse” forces us to sit in the awkward silence as Asher and Whitney try to sell both the working-class community of Española (an actual small city outside Santa Fe) and the viewing public on their ultra-modern, eco-friendly homes.

An architect who builds mirrored, self-sufficient houses with a suspicious resemblance to the work of artist Doug Aitken, Whitney has constructed her entire identity in opposition to her parents (Constance Shulman and Corbin Bernsen), shameless capitalists who shrug off the label of “slumlord.” Whitney is convinced she can make money, win design awards, benefit the environment and help the local community, an untenable vision she’s recruited Asher to make work on the business side. But cracks quickly start to show in this telegenic facade. While filming the pilot, Asher and Dougie attempt to stage a heartwarming moment for the cameras by having Asher offer money to a child (Hikmah Warsame). When Asher retracts his gift once Dougie has the shot, his angry ex-beneficiary declares: “I curse you.”

For a professional comedian, Fielder is disturbingly good at creating congenitally unfunny characters. (At one point, Asher enrolls in a corporate comedy class as an unsuccessful bid to improve his on-camera appeal.) In “The Curse,” there’s no distancing mechanism that assures us Fielder, the performer, is simply doing a bit for our entertainment. We’re completely immersed in this fictional reality, one where Asher’s crippling social ineptitude is only magnified by his wife’s charisma. Movie stars have a mixed track record in their influx to TV, but Stone’s inherent charm makes for a pointed contrast with Fielder’s deliberate lack thereof. Whitney is a narcissistic monster in her own right, though she’s better at creating the illusion of empathy for the camera.

Completing this unholy trinity, Safdie sports a Tommy Wiseau-like wig as Dougie works to destabilize what’s already an unhealthy dynamic. (A sex scene in the premiere, preceded by a full-frontal shot of Fielder sporting a micropenis, illuminates the insecurity and lack of open communication dragging down a marriage that’s just a year old.) A former bully of Asher’s from Jewish summer camp, Dougie acts as a kind of Faustian figure, playing Asher and Whitney against each other in a bid to create the most compelling product possible. Whitney and Asher have bet their whole, over-leveraged house of cards — shockingly, the economics of chic designer homes in an under-resourced area don’t quite pencil out — on their show’s success, but Dougie, too, needs a win. Before the events of “The Curse,” a drunken car accident destroyed the producer’s personal and professional lives, a reckoning for which he still refuses to take responsibility.

Such intimate mind games among awful people play out against a backdrop of much broader social issues, from gentrification to Indigenous rights, brought up by Asher and Whitney’s work. In a sense, “The Curse” bridges the capitalist commentary of “Nathan for You,” which was to “Bar Rescue” what “The Curse” is to HGTV’s “Flip or Flop,” and the eavesdropping-on-therapy feel of “The Rehearsal.” Over time, and understandably, “The Curse” gravitates toward the personal; Fielder and Safdie have the opportunity to design their own showcase and draw on Stone’s talents in bringing their core trio to life. The question is whether you can stand to wait and see how the arrangement plays out. “The Curse” is undeniably effective at creating a mood, which means every compliment to the show also sounds like a criticism. The show is a study of exploitation at all levels that’s often painful to watch. Whether that’s a cue to tune in or stay far away is up to you.

The first episode of “The Curse” will premiere on Paramount+ on Nov. 10 and Showtime on Nov. 12, with subsequent episodes streaming weekly on Fridays and airing on Sundays.

“Blue Beetle” will crawl its way to streaming this month. Warner Bros’ latest DC superhero adventure will arrive on Max on Nov. 17.

Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, the film centers on college graduate Jaime Reyes ( Xolo Maridueña) who gets chosen to become a symbiotic host to an ancient alien biotech relic that turns him into the superhero known as Blue Beetle. As one of the most preeminent Latino superheroes in comic book history, the “Blue Beetle” cast is predominantly Latino, including Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar and Belissa Escobedo, along with Susan Sarandon.

Meanwhile, despite Blue Beetle’s disappointing box office intake of $122.9 million worldwide, the superhero movie scored big with general audiences and film critics, alike. “‘Blue Beetle‘ is like a dark ’80s fantasia with a shaggy-haired boy-band hero in the middle of it,” penned Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman in his review. And hopefully, the movie can explain the new DC Universe, which will soon expand with the upcoming “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” representing the final installment before the comic book universe’s continuity reboots with Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” in 2025.

“Blue Beetle” will begin streaming on Max starting Nov. 17. You can also access the film for free by subscribing to Prime Video which offers a 7-day free trial to Max:

The new edition of Huelva runs Nov. 10-18.

Andalusia’s oldest film festival, Huelva will also grant a Light Award to Spanish actress Natalia de Molina, a two-time Goya winner, delivering acclaimed performance in films such as David Trueba’s “Living Is Easy with Eyes Closed” and Juan Miguel del Castillo’s “Food and Shelter.”

Another Light Award will go this year to producer José Alba, founder of Malaga-based company Pecado Films, a symbol of the growth of Andalusia’s film industry behind two of Spain’s highest-profile titles of recent times: “Close Your Eyes,” the latest from Spanish master Victor Erice, and Patricia Ortega’s Sundance hit “Mamacruz.”

For its current edition, suggesting a growing interest by Ibero-American creators in attending Huelva, the festival’s organizers received nearly 1,400 submissions, 10% up on 2022. 110 titles made the cut, with 12 of them being selected to play in the festival’s Official Section, vying for Huelva’s top Colon de Oro.

A representative portrait of Ibero-America’s current film scene, main competition titles have played Cannes, Berlin, Venice, SXSW, Tribeca, Biarritz, Havana, London, Los Angeles and Toronto.

Featuring auteurs and with seven titles directed the main competition was designed as a “melting pot of all kinds of titles, ranging from the most popular genre films to riskier proposals,” says director Manuel H. Martin.

Among them are Brazilian first-timer Lillah Halla’s abortion drama “Power Alley (Levante),” an M-Appeal pick-up which snagged a Cannes’ Fipresci prize and  “Adolfo,” Mexican Sofía Auza’s feature debut, produced by L.A., Mexico and Spain-based outfit The Immigrant, winner of a Berlin Generation 14plus Crystal Bear.

Venice Horizons contender “A Cielo Abierto” (“Upon Open Sky”), with Huelva honoree Cecilia Suárez in its cast, marks the feature debut of siblings Mariana and Santiago Arriaga, children of “Babel’s” Guillermo Arriaga.

Huelva’s top competition sidebar will also host coming-of-age drama “Boca Chica,” by debutant director Gabriella A. Moses, a Sterlyn Ramírez production from Dominican Republic-based Selene Films, which won the Norah Ephron Award at Tribeca, the first win at the festival for a Dominican movie.

Further standouts take in Argentine Daniela Goggi’s “The Rescue,” a Paramount+ original film acclaimed in Venice and produced by Paramount Television International Studios, Rei Cine and Infinity Hill, and Felipe Carmona’s Chilean historical drama “Penal Cordillera,” a BFI London and San Sebastian player sold by Luxbox.

The Rescue

Making the Official Selection cut are “Valentina o la serenidad,” Mexican Ángeles Cruz’s sophomore feature, screened at Toronto and Morelia; Juan Sebastián Torales’ fantasy drama “Almamula,” an Argentina-France-Italy co-production which premiered at Berlinale’s Generation 14plus, picked up by Bendita Films Sales; and veteran Mexican director Luis Mandoki’s “Presencias,” toplining Goya award winner Alberto Ammann, Oscar-nominated Yalitza Aparicio and Angélica Peláez, a two-Ariel laureate.

Also in competition are Renée Nader Messora and João Salaviza’s Portuguese-Brazilian hybrid doc “The Buriti Flower,” winner of Un Certain Regard Ensemble Prize; Argentine Tomás Gómez Bustillo’s “Chronicles of a Wandering Saint,” an Adam Yauch Hörnblower prize winner at SXSW, and comedy “La Suprema,” Colombian Felipe Holguín feature debut, who was selected at Toronto and Havana, where it won the Post-Production Coral Prize.

“Ibero-American cinema is constantly evolving. Now, it is very easy to find great films, if not in budgetary terms, then in artistic ambitions, as our programming proves,” Martín says.

Born during the pandemic, with the objective of offering film lovers with fest favourites offering new storytelling and a cutting-edge visuals

Huelva’s Seismos Section maintains its virtual stage – Spain’s top indie film platform Filmin. It also presents eight titles in Huelva theaters.

This year, Sismos selection takes in Christopher Murray’s Sundance contender “Brujería,” Andrew Sala’s “La barbarie,” seen at a Cannes’ Marché du Film showcase, Sanfic Industria and awarded at Toulouse: and Kattia González’s “Las hijas,” a best Ibero-American film at Málaga, sold by Pluto Films.

Also in the Sismos mix: “Los océanos son los verdaderos continentes,” a film by Tommaso Santambrogio, launched by Italy’s Fandango Sales at Venice; Tana Gilbert’s Chile-Germany co-production “Malqueridas,” a best film at Venice’s Intl. Critics Week; the Berlin and Sitges-selected “Propiedade,” by Brazilian Daniel Bandeira; Carolina Markowicz’s “Toll,” screened in Toronto, San Sebastián, Stockholm and Rio; and Mauricio Calderón Rico’s Mexican coming-of-age “Todos los incendios,” a Locarno and Morelia player.

Observing solid tradition, Huelva has made a strong bet on short film programming, with titles previously selected at Berlin, Bafici and Seattle. 19 short films screen in the National and International Ibero-American Official Sections.

Aimed to nurture Andalusian filmmakers, a Talento Andaluz sidebar screen four Spanish premieres: Paco Ortíz’s “Anibal, el arquitecto de Sevilla”, Bernabé Bulnes’ “Fueron los días,” Ceres Machado’s “Reflejos en una habitación” and Silvia Moreno and Dani Llamas’ “Steven quiere conocerte.”

Playing out of competition at Talento Andaluz are two Movistar Plus+ documentaries: Arturo Menor’s “Iberia, naturaleza infinita,” also backed by regional broadcaster Canal Sur and Acajú; and Alexis Morante’s “Bisbal,” produced alongside Dadá Films and Universal Music Spain.

Talento Andaluz adds this year a short film competition.Pantalla Huelva section offers eight shorts directed by Huelva filmmakers.

Martín took over the Huelva Festival in 2016. Over the years, he’s sought to establish a sustainable model that rests on three pillars: Meticulous programming, industry events and educational activities.

In terms of industry, the festival will highlight a rapidly emerging Dominican Republic film industry. As part of a two-year deal inked at Cannes, Huelva and the Dominican Republic film entity DGCine is organizing a pitching event featuring four Dominican projects in development which are looking for Spanish co-production partners.

A traditional launchpad for Latin American filmmakers in Spain and Europe, Huelva programs this year a special focus on Dominican cinema, with 12 standout titles available via Filmin over Nov. 3-19.

“There are other festivals in Spain organizing co-production forums, which require higher budgets. So we decided to create something more focused, more careful, taking advantage of our sustainable design, which allows a tremendous proximity between all the attendees,” Martin says.

“We try to make everyone feel at home and that this facilitates the birth of new projects and industry deals,” he adds.

Huelva is also reinforcing its educational program, with the first edition of Primera Pantalla, aimed at school children, as it consolidates Ventana Cinéfila – offering titles on Filmin – and the Jóvenes Comunicadores Cinéfilos program, for young moviegoers.

Encuentros, a TV format for the promotion of film and TV industry, will broadcast worldwide via social networks, interviewing honorees, film participants and further industry representatives.

Huelva’s opening gala will screen out of competition the doc feature “Sembrando Sueños,” about celebrated Andalusian playwright brothers Serafín and Joaquín Álvarez Quintero, helmed by Sevillian actor-director Alfonso Sánchez (“El mundo es nuestro”).

Travis Kelce didn’t make it to the very first night of Taylor Swift‘s South American tour — for a good cause.

Kelce, 34, stayed in Kansas City on Thursday, November 9, as Swift, 33, kicked off the second leg of her Eras Tour in Argentina. While some fans were hoping to see Kelce shaking it off in Swift’s VIP tent, he instead supported teammate Patrick Mahomes at the third annual 15 and the Mahomies Foundation Gala.

“@killatrav in the building!” read an Instagram Story from the charity’s official account on Thursday alongside a video of Kelce at the event. “Huge thanks for all your support ?.”

Mahomes, 28, established his organization in 2019 with the hopes of “improving the lives of children” through “initiatives that focus on health, wellness, communities in need of resources and other charitable causes,” per the foundation’s website. By the end of Thursday’s gala, more than $600,000 was awarded in grants to the charity’s partners.

It seems as if (almost) all of Hollywood and the NFL are in need of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce friendship bracelets. Ever since Kelce tried to meet Swift at one of her Eras Tour performances in July 2023 — he wanted to give her a friendship bracelet with his number on it, but she had […]

“Thank y’all for being here,” Mahomes said in a speech with his wife, Brittany Mahomes, standing behind him on stage. “Let’s keep it going, let’s make it bigger and bigger and see where we can go.”

Kelce’s appearance came shortly after he hinted at possibly traveling “somewhere sunny” and “closer to the equator” while the Kansas City Chiefs are on their bye week. “I might just say ‘f–k it’ and just go somewhere nice, I don’t know,” he told his brother and cohost, Jason Kelce, on the Wednesday, November 8, episode of their “New Heights” podcast.

Swift restarted her Eras Tour on Thursday after wrapping up the U.S. leg of shows in August. She performed to a sold-out crowd in Buenos Aires, debuting a new pink bodysuit for the Lover section of her three-hour set. Fans were treated to songs Swift has never before played live — “The Very First Night (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)” and “Labyrinth” — during the acoustic portion of the show.

While he missed Thursday’s concert, Travis previously saw The Eras Tour in Kansas City in July. He later revealed on “New Heights” that he tried to meet Swift backstage and give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it, but the twosome didn’t connect that night.

Two months later, however, Swift accepted an invitation from Travis to see him play in a Chiefs game. She was first spotted in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium on September 24 and has since attended four more NFL games as her romance with Travis heats up.

Despite their busy schedules, a source exclusively told Us Weekly this month that Swift and Travis “have developed a very real connection” and came up with “detailed plans” for how to navigate the distance while Swift is on tour.

A second insider revealed last month, “He’s going to see her when she’s back on tour. That’s already planned. And when she gets a break, she’ll see him,” adding, “Taylor is really happy and excited about Travis.”

Swift has two more shows in Buenos Aires this weekend before she heads to Brazil for concerts in Rio de Janeiro and São Paolo. Travis, meanwhile, plays his next NFL game on November 20 against Jason, 36, and the Philadelphia Eagles.

First, they are programmed for specific tasks. (Examples that OpenAI created include “Creative Writing Coach” and “Mocktail Mixologist,” a bot that suggests nonalcoholic drink recipes.) Second, the bots can pull from private data, such as a company’s internal H.R. documents or a database of real estate listings, and incorporate that data into their responses. Third, if you let them, the bots can plug into other parts of your online life — your calendar, your to-do list, your Slack account — and take actions using your credentials.

Sound scary? It is, if you ask some A.I. safety researchers, who fear that giving bots more autonomy could lead to disaster. The Center for AI Safety, a nonprofit research organization, listed autonomous agents as one of its “catastrophic A.I. risks” this year, saying that “malicious actors could intentionally create rogue A.I.s with dangerous goals.”

But there is money to be made in A.I. assistants that can do useful tasks for people, and corporate customers have been itching to train chatbots on their own data. There is also an argument that A.I. won’t truly be useful until it really understands its users — their communication styles, their likes and dislikes, what they look at and shop for online.

So here we are, speeding into the age of the autonomous A.I. agent — doomers be damned.

To be fair, OpenAI’s bots aren’t particularly dangerous. I got a demo of several GPTs during the company’s developer conference in San Francisco on Monday, and they mostly automated harmless tasks like creating coloring pages for children, or explaining the rules of card games.

Custom GPTs also can’t really do much yet, beyond searching through documents and plugging into common apps. One demo I saw on Monday involved an OpenAI employee asking a GPT to look up conflicting meetings on her Google calendar and send a Slack message to her boss. Another happened onstage when Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, built a “start-up mentor” chatbot to give advice to aspiring founders, based on an uploaded file of a speech he had given years earlier.

First, they are programmed for specific tasks.

When director Andrew Haigh read the 1987 novel “Strangers” by Taichi Yamada, he knew the premise of a man’s new romance mystically reconnecting him to his long-dead parents was a story with the potential to be “entirely universal,” as he puts it in the exclusive featurette above.

“Just being able to have a conversation with them as equals at a certain time, that was so fascinating to me. And I couldn’t help but think that everybody would want to have that conversation with their parents if they could,” the British filmmaker told IndieWire in advance of “All of Us Strangers” screening at AFI Fest on Saturday, October 28.

Since its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, Haigh said the Searchlight Pictures release has proven to speak “to children, to parents, to gay people, to straight people,” said Haigh. “And speak to all of them in a way that it works for all of those people without it being bland.”

One major change from the novel is making its central romance queer, with pensive screenwriter Adam (Andrew Scott) falling for his arresting neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal). “It is about a gay relationship and I’m not embarrassed about that or making any qualms about that,” Haigh said. “It was important that that felt really authentic at the same time, but still tell something wider.”

Claire Foy and Jamie Bell round out the tiny cast as Adam’s parents, but “it was a strangely long [casting] process for what is only four people in the whole film,” said Haigh. “Just speaking to them, you realized that they were prepared to throw everything they had into it. And that’s just a dream as a director because it doesn’t always happen. It really doesn’t. So the fact they wanted to made me really confident going in.”

The hardest role to cast was Harry. “We went around the world, we spoke to people in Brazil and we spoke to people in France,” he said. “We really tried to be quite open about who [Harry] would be. And then Paul came along and it was like, ‘Well, okay, there you go.’ He’s a great actor and he’s wonderful and why wouldn’t we cast him. It would be insane. You only have to meet him to know that he’s essentially a movie star. You can feel it in his bones.”

Best Actor nominee Mescal (“Aftersun”) was happy to take the supporting role to Scott’s lead. “He was so excited about working with Andrew and also knowing that he was the supporting character to Andrew,” said the filmmaker. “There’s lots of actors all obsessed by their own ego, about who is the most important. And everyone understood what this film was and who it was circling around.”

For Haigh, Scott felt like the only choice for Adam. The director is 50 and the actor is 47, which gave the two men a certain shorthand. “He’s a man of a certain generation like me. And we both grew up gay and there was a lot of stuff that was coming out about that for both of us,” he said . “We bonded as you do often with people when you’ve had the same experience or a similar experience.”

The specificity to which Haigh alludes is being a queer Gen Xer who must come to terms with their sexuality during the AIDS crisis. “Obviously, things have got so much better,” he said. “But all of that pain that a generation of people felt growing up, that hasn’t all vanished, that pain is still there, it’s still lurking. The world might’ve forgotten how we were treated, but we haven’t forgotten how we were treated and how we felt. We’re so good at pretending we’re ok now, and not rocking the boat, and not saying to people, ‘Do you remember how you used to make me feel back then?’ Because nobody wants to be made to feel guilty, let’s face it.”

Haigh said the buzz around “All of Us Strangers, a film so personal to the filmmaker that part of it was shot in his childhood home, has exceeded his expectations. “The reaction has been good to most of the work I’ve done. But I feel like some films don’t break out into much more of a conversation. I made ‘Lean on Pete,’ it got good reviews, but no one ended up talking about it, and it just disappeared and vanished,” said Haigh. “This film has broken through whatever that little bubble is to people to start to talk about it. So I’m just really grateful because it doesn’t happen all the time. Even if the film is good, it doesn’t happen all the time. So I’m just pleased that people are wanting to talk about it.”
