Leaders of SAG-AFTRA and Hollywood’s Teamsters Local 399 showed their support for the WGA on Monday, posing with WGA leaders shortly before the 11 a.m. start of the Writers Guild’s contract negotiations with producers at the AMPTP’s headquarters in Sherman Oaks.

“This is what solidarity looks like!” the WGA West posted on its Twitter page above a photo of the labor leaders. From left to right are David A. Goodman, former WGA West president and co-chair of the WGA’s Negotiating Committee; Lindsay Dougherty, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 399; Ellen Stutzman, WGA chief negotiator and assistant executive director of the WGA West; Meredith Stiehm, president of the WGA West; Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director, and Chris Keyser, former WGA West president and co-chair of the WGA Negotiation Committee.

Day 2 of the WGA’s contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers gets underway today.

On Monday, before the talks started, the WGA’s Negotiating Committee said that “the studios are spending billions of dollars to produce the content we create and are reaping tens of billions in profits. Those profits come at the expense of writers, who are not keeping up. That must change now. Our goal is a contract that allows writers to maintain sustainable careers and be fairly compensated for the work we do. Our proposals are reasonable and we hope the studios will take them seriously. You will not hear much from us during these early weeks of negotiations, but we will be in touch as soon as we have significant updates.”

On Sunday, the AMPTP said: “The AMPTP companies approach this negotiation and the ones to follow with the long-term health and stability of the industry as our priority. We are all partners in charting the future of our business together and fully committed to reaching a mutually beneficial deal with each of our bargaining partners. The goal is to keep production active so that all of us can continue working and continue to deliver to consumers the best entertainment product available in the world.”

EXCLUSIVE: Hot on the heels of longtime

Donna D’Errico was popular in the ‘90s for playing Donna Marco on the hit series Baywatch. Now, she’s making a comeback thanks to her popular social media accounts and OnlyFans career. She still knows her way around a red swimsuit, however, and recently shared a bikini look harkening back to the famous suit she used to wear on TV.

Of course, these days D’Errico is more apt to rock a bikini than a one piece, but red is still very much her color. This week, she posted her first ever TikTok– a look at a suit from her new line of swimwear that also references her swimwear past. It’s difficult to believe the Baywatch star is old enough to be putting together a line of bikinis for women over 50, but at 54, she’s the perfect age to promote swimwear to make ladies of any age feel confident. Take a look.

Some new stars in the mix make it a little harder for “Succession” to secure one last Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series win at the 2023 Emmys.

We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2023 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, with an edited presentation of the ceremonies to be broadcast on FXX at a later date. Finally, the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Monday, September 18, and air live on FOX at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

It’s hard to believe that Matthew Macfayden is the first and only “Succession” star to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for their work on the show. The cast is so stacked with memorable performances by male actors that one could make the case that even Arian Moayed is owed this Emmy for playing Stewy. Given how Season 4 will be the hit HBO drama’s final one, the biggest question becomes “Will the TV Academy give Macfayden another Emmy, or will it finally go to Kieran Culkin this year?” The latter actor has been the favorite to win this category two seasons in a row, and fell short both times, with Macfayden pulling ahead last spring with a scene-stealing turn in the Season 3 finale. The same thing could happen again where the writing is so great for Cousin Greg in the final stretch of the series that co-star Nicholas Braun, also a two-time nominee, finally wins the Emmy.

All that said, there are a few other dramas voters are sure to watch. “The White Lotus” got some surprise nominations into a jam-packed Limited Series race last year, so expect quite a few of the actors to make the cut in the slightly less competitive 2023 Drama category—especially Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham and Emmy winner Michael Imperioli. “Better Call Saul” ending gives more incentive to nominate stars Giancarlo Esposito and Jonathan Banks one last time for their iconic “Breaking Bad” characters. And to round things out, it is very easy to bet on former winners John Lithgow (“The Old Man”) and Bradley Whitford (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) securing a spot in this category, even if public interest in the latter’s Hulu show has waned.

Current Contenders (In Alphabetical Order):
F. Murray Abraham, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
Jonathan Banks, “Better Call Saul” (AMC)
Nicholas Braun, “Succession” (HBO)
Kieran Culkin, “Succession” (HBO)
Giancarlo Esposito, “Better Call Saul” (AMC)
Tom Hollander, “The White Lotus”
Michael Imperioli, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
Theo James, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
John Lithgow, “The Old Man” (FX)
Matthew Macfadyen, “Succession” (HBO)
Alan Ruck, “Succession” (HBO)
Will Sharpe, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
Stellan Skarsgard, “Andor” (Disney+)
Matt Smith, “House of the Dragon” (HBO)
Bradley Whitford, “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu)

Some new stars in the mix make

With the glitz and glamor of awards season having reached its ultimate conclusion in this universe and, presumably, across the multiverse (even the hot dog fingers one), the indie film community now returns to the harsh realities of Hollywood: stingy budgets, reluctant financiers and the general faint purchase of support that largely defines the greater independent filmmaker experience.

To that end, now that the final yards of canvas tent have been rolled up on the Santa Monica Pier and returned to storage for yet another year, Film Independent now focuses on the work that is at the core of our mission: to champion creative independence in visual storytelling in all its forms and to foster a culture of inclusion.

This support of a global community of artists and audiences who embody diversity, innovation, curiosity and uniqueness of vision is ever-present in our robust Artist Development Labs and Programs, proudly celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2023.

n addition to our year-round offerings, our Artist Development programs encompass a wide range of initiatives that help filmmakers push their projects forward, including this year’s inaugural Imaginar Producers Residency, made possible by The Walt Disney Company, Searchlight Pictures and in collaboration with the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP).

You may recall that we launched the program back in November. And guess what—we have updates! Selections have been finalized and we’re thrilled to announce three new Imaginar Fellows, who over the course of nine months will receive a $50,000 cash grant, mentorship, professional and financial coaching, project development and more to gain significant traction for their projects.

The Imaginar Fellows’ collaboration with Disney and Searchlight executives will help the participants gain a deeper understanding of how to package and set up projects for studios so that they may find success with both independent and studio projects.

“The Imaginar Producers Residency is an innovative and holistic program that provides Latinx Producers tailored support with the goal to help achieve long-term sustainability.” said Angela C. Lee, Director of Artist Development, “We couldn’t be more thrilled to launch this program with these three immensely talented artists.”

“Our goal with this initiative is to build community, and to support and nurture the next wave of filmmaking talent,” added Mahin Ibrahim, Director, Creative Talent Pathways, Representation & Inclusion Strategies and Searchlight Pictures’ VP of Production Richard Ruiz. “We are very grateful for the opportunity to help advance the work of these three immensely inspiring producers, especially in a time when it’s important to continue bringing fresh and innovative filmmakers to the forefront.”

The Imaginar Fellows will receive creative and strategic support to propel their careers and projects forward while also gaining insight on how to package projects for studios, bridging the gap between producing independent and studio features.

Fellows will receive professional coaching in partnership with Renee Freedman & Co, and financial and business advisement and coaching in partnership with The Jill James. Each Fellow will also receive a $50,000 unrestricted grant to provide sustainability and support their creative endeavors.

“Our goal is to provide the three Latinx Fellows with the necessary tools and resources to take their projects to the next level. We are excited to see the outcomes of this collaboration and the success of our Fellows as a result of our joint effort.” shared Diana Luna, NALIP Executive Director.

Our 2023 Imaginar Producers Residency filmmakers and their projects are…

Vladimir Putin today threatened to ‘respond’ to Britain’s plan to send ammunition containing depleted uranium to Ukraine – as Moscow warned of the increasing risk of a ‘nuclear collision’.

The Russian despot said some of the ammunition for the Challenger 2 battle tanks that Britain is sending to Ukraine includes armour piercing rounds which contain depleted uranium.

Speaking after talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Putin said the move heralds the West switching to supplying Kyiv with weapons containing nuclear components, adding that Moscow will be ‘forced to react’ if the UK goes ahead with its delivery of 14 next-generation battle tanks.

‘The United Kingdom announced not only the supply of tanks to Ukraine, but also shells with depleted uranium,’ Putin seethed.

‘If this happens, Russia will be forced to respond accordingly, given that the West collectively is already beginning to use weapons with a nuclear component. It looks like the West indeed intends to fight Russia until the last Ukrainian,’ added.

Russian politicians and Putin’s propagandists have made a series of combative remarks since the invasion of Ukraine last year, suggesting Moscow would – if necessary – be prepared to deploy its vast nuclear arsenal.

Putin also joined XI in condemning the security pact known as AUKUS that will see Australia develop a nuclear-powered submarine program with the United States and Britain.

Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reiterated Putin’s point today and warned the world is just mere ‘steps’ away from nuclear disaster.

‘Another step has been taken, and there are fewer and fewer left,’ Shoigu said. When asked whether this meant that the world was closer to a nuclear collision, he replied: ‘It was not by chance that I told you about steps. There are fewer and fewer.’ Shoigu added that ‘every war ends in peace’.

Depleted uranium is used in weapons because it can penetrate tanks and armour more easily due to its density and other physical properties.

It is a by-product of the nuclear enriching process used to make nuclear fuel or nuclear weapons. It is around 60 percent as radioactive as natural uranium.

Depleted uranium is a particular health risk around impact sites, where dust can get into people’s lungs and vital organs.

‘Naturally, Russia has something to answer this with,’ Shoigu told reporters when asked about the ammunition.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the plan the ‘Yugoslavia scenario’, saying the ammunition caused cancer and infected the environment.

It comes as Xi said on Tuesday he had signed an agreement with Putin bringing their ties into a ‘new era’ – in a move that will be met with apprehension in Ukraine as Kyiv fears China may ultimately decide to supply its strategic ally with arms, influencing the outcome of the war.

‘We signed a statement on deepening the strategic partnership and bilateral ties which are entering a new era,’ Xi said following talks with Putin in the Kremlin.

The two countries expressed their ‘concern’ over NATO’s growing presence in Asia, according to the declaration.

‘The parties express great concern over the ongoing strengthening of NATO’s ties with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region on military and security issues,’ China and Russia said in the declaration.

Putin also claimed that China’s 12-point ‘peace plan’ could provide a basis for the end to the Ukraine war – a move that has been met with scepticism in Kyiv and the West, with world leaders questioning the real motive behind Beijing’s plan for peace.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that Kyiv has invited China to talks and is waiting for an answer from Beijing.

‘We offered China to become a partner in the implementation of the peace formula. We passed over our formula across all channels. We invite you to dialogue. We are waiting for your answer,’ Zelensky told a press conference, adding that: ‘We are receiving some signals, but there are no specifics yet’.

China has not offered any concrete proposals to end the war other than its 12-point ‘peace plan’ which included calling for an end to Western sanctions, negotiations that would see Ukraine ceding territory, a NATO pull-back from its eastern borders and reconstruction efforts that are likely to benefit Chinese contractors.

And despite its calls for peace, Beijing has continued to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Russia and parroted the Kremlin’s talking points about NATO expansionism.

In a scathing speech on Monday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken also voiced scepticism over Xi’s ‘peace’ proposals aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, warning they could be a ‘stalling tactic’ to help Russian troops on the ground.

Russia and China’s joint statement on the war in Ukraine

‘The Russian side positively assesses the objective and unbiased position of the Chinese side on the Ukrainian question.

The parties are opposed to any states and their blocs damaging the legitimate security interests of other states in order to obtain military, political and other advantages.

The Chinese side positively assesses the willingness of the Russian side to make efforts to restart peace talks as soon as possible.

Russia welcomes China’s readiness to play a positive role in a political-diplomatic settlement of the Ukrainian crisis and the constructive ideas set forth in the document drawn up by the Chinese side ‘On China’s Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukrainian Crisis.’

The parties note that in order to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, it is necessary to respect the legitimate concerns of all countries in the field of security and prevent the formation of bloc confrontation, and halt actions that further fuel the conflict.

The parties stress that responsible dialogue is the best way for a sustainable resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, and the international community should support constructive efforts in this regard.

The parties call for an end to all steps that contribute to the escalation of tension and prolongation of hostilities, to avoid further degradation of the crisis to the point where it could cross over into an uncontrollable phase.

The parties oppose all unilateral sanctions imposed in circumvention of the U.N. Security Council.’

‘The world should not be fooled by any tactical move by Russia, supported by China or any other country, to freeze the war on its own terms,’ Blinken said.

Blinken added that Xi’s trip suggests that Beijing does not think that Putin should not be held accountable for atrocities committed in Ukraine by Russian forces.

It came after the International Criminal Court on Friday called for Putin’s arrest and accused the despot of committing war crimes by abducting Ukrainian children from their homes and deporting them to Russia to be given to Russian families.

Putin warmly welcomed Xi on Monday for a three-day visit the two major powers described as an opportunity to deepen their ‘no-limits friendship’. Putin is keen to show he has a heavyweight ally and also find a market for Russian energy products under western sanctions.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov accused NATO of wanting to become the world’s dominant military force and said Moscow is trying to prevent it.

‘That is why we are expanding our cooperation with China, including in the security sphere,’ he said.

Western officials ‘have seen some signs’ that Mr Putin also wants lethal weapons from China, though there is no evidence Beijing has granted his request, Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels on Tuesday.

‘China should not provide lethal aid to Russia,’ Mr Stoltenberg said. ‘That would be to support an illegal war and only prolong the war.’

It comes after a Russian fighter jet intercepted a pair of US nuclear bombers over the Baltic Sea, just days after an American drone was downed.

Russia’s defence ministry said a single Su-35 was scrambled to meet the B-52 strategic bombers that were flying towards the Russian border on Monday, but that it returned to base after they moved away following a tense stand off.

The development came as Moscow said it had flown two of its own nuclear bombers over the Sea of Japan for more than seven hours, in a statement released as Japan’s prime minister was beginning a surprise visit to Ukraine – and as China’s premier Xi Jinping continues his own visit to Moscow.

Russia’s Tupolev Tu-95MS planes are capable of carrying nuclear weapons and Moscow regularly flies them over international waters in the Arctic, North Atlantic and Pacific as a show of strength and as an intimidation tactic.

It also followed the March 14 crash of a US military surveillance drone into the Black Sea after it was intercepted by Russian jets, in the first known direct military encounter between Russia and the US since Russia invaded Ukraine.

‘On March 20, radar facilities of the air defence forces of the Western military district on duty over the Baltic Sea detected two air targets flying in the direction of the Russian Federation’s state border,’ the ministry said on the Telegram messaging app.

It said the targets were US Air Force B52H strategic bombers.

Dramatic footage, purportedly captured from the Su-35, appeared to confirm this on Tuesday. In the video captured from close-range, it showed one of the two American aircraft soaring above the clouds.

Earlier, the two US planes were seen being escorted by Polish fighter jets.

Flightradar24 plotted the route of a B52 Stratofortress bomber across Europe on Monday, saying it was flying at 26,500ft. The route tracked across Spain from south to north, skirted around France, before flying over Britain.

It then went out into the north sea, crossed Denmark, flew up into Sweden and then down into Poland, before following the Baltic Sea up to Estonia, before turning back on itself to fly back towards Sweden.

Russia said a Su-35 fighter jet took to the air in order to prevent a border violation, and added, ‘after the foreign military aircraft moved away from the Russian Federation state border, the Russian fighter returned to its base airfield.’

The ministry said the Su-35’s flight was strictly in line with international rules of the use of airspace. ‘No violation of the state border of the Russian Federation was permitted,’ it said.

As its CEO prepares to face Congress this week, TikTok on Tuesday disclosed that it now has more than 150 million monthly active users in the U.S., up from 100 million a year ago.

Its explosive growth for the social video platform (Snapchat, with a years-long head start, says it has about 150 million users in North America) comes as it faces an existential threat, with Congress and the Biden administration appearing open to an outright ban of TikTok in the U.S., or perhaps a forced sale.

To that end, TikTok’s newsroom post on Tuesday focused on the people and businesses that use the platform, in an effort to shoe up some grassroots support, and to emphasize that a ban would impact regular people.

The company notes that it now reaches nearly half the population, and that 5 million businesses rely on it as a partner. And of course there’s the 7,000 TikTok employees in the U.S.

“This milestone coincides with a critical period for TikTok,” the company said. “Certain politicians have raised concerns about the potential banning of our platform, which would directly affect all 150 million Americans who have embraced TikTok. To proactively address U.S. national security concerns, we’ve taken unprecedented steps by enhancing safeguards for our U.S. users.”

Concerns from politicians include the potential sharing of data with Chinese authorities, allegations that Chinese nationals used TikTok to spy or gather information on U.S. journalists, and the potential that the platform could be used for Chinese propaganda. TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

The gamesmanship by TikTok, emphasizing its scale, comes as its CEO Shou Chew prepares to testify before the House Energy & Commerce Committee on Thursday. It will be Chew’s first time testifying since taking over the company nearly two years ago.

While the company has made efforts to address U.S. concerns (including building a data center in the U.S. that would house all American user data), the unusual alliance between the Biden administration and Congress suggests that TikTok’s challenges may be far from over.

Tech-focused venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz is leading a seed round to back development of a new interactive game utilizing blockchain technology by CCP Games.

Iceland-based CCP, the creator of Eve Online, the popular sci-fi massively multiplayer online (MMO) role-playing game, said it will receive $40 million to develop the new title.

Joining Andreessen Horowitz in the funding round are Makers Fund, BITKRAFT, Kingsway Capital, HASHED, Nexon and others, CCP said in a statement.

The new game will be set within the Eve Universe, the company said. Launched in 2003, the unscripted role-playing game Eve Online has roughly 9.59 million players, per MMO Populations, which tracks the genre.

“Since its inception, CCP Games’ vision has been to create virtual worlds more meaningful than real life,” said CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson. “Now, with advancements made within blockchain, we can forge a new universe deeply imbued with our expertise in player agency and autonomy, empowering players to engage in new ways.”

The project will leverage smart-contract blockchain technology, and allow for “truly open third-party development to create a new relationship between virtual worlds and players,” the company said.

“The depth and nuances of Eve have become a frequent point of reference in blockchain gaming and we are therefore thrilled to support the team’s impressive vision of expanding the Eve Universe utilizing this technology,” said Makers Fund Principal Alli Óttarsson.

CCP Game Director Sæmundur Hermannsson is leading the development team.

Andreessen Horowitz, which refers to itself as “a16z,” said in a statement it has spent a lot of time with Pétursson in the past year “and came away impressed with his thoughtful approach to web3, his experience running CCP through multiple business cycles, and his pragmatism as a veteran entrepreneur and studio leader.”

“Hilmar has been on the bleeding edge of blockchain gaming since 2017 – long before crypto was mainstream,” the statement said.

General Partner Jonanthan Lai said, “They’re a veteran team and we believe in their ambitious vision to deliver incredible player experiences at the intersection of best-in-class game design and blockchain technology.”

Founded in 2009, a16z has backed hundreds of companies across a range of sectors, including Airbnb, Facebook, Slack, Pinterest and crypto platform Coinbase. Its active portfolio includes development platform Alchemy, media outlet BuzzFeed, online hangout Clubhouse and dozens more companies.

“The team has already made great progress in product development and we’ve been very impressed by the playtests thus far,” Andreessen Horowitz said in a statement.

“Together, we share the belief that player ownership and governance within an open platform can be a key source of fun that serves to amplify great gameplay and captivating game design.”

Likewise, the exercise of switching “Bad”—the band’s 1984 song written about a friend’s struggles with drug abuse—from third person to first person disrespects the song’s original intent. What made that song—about watching friends go through literal life and death situations—one of U2’s best was how well it emotionally communicated the bleakness people felt, the loss and regret and sorrow that Bono manifested in the performance. Altering the lyrics now to put himself in the story doesn’t help it or clarify it or improve it, because he was already there. The fact that he still feels genuinely lucky despite all of the years that have passed doesn’t mean that he should rewrite “Bad.” It just means he should write some new songs.

These types of unnecessary alterations affect pretty much everything else on the record. None of these “re-imaginings” on Songs of Surrender fundamentally transform any of the 40 tracks. The great songs are still great, the re-written lines are interesting suggestions but in most cases, are no more than jarring distractions, and the less-than-great songs (some of which the band only released in the past decade, like “Every Breaking Wave” or “Invisible”) are still exactly what they were before this project.

Then there is the case of “Walk On,” an anthem from 2000’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind. Upon release, the band dedicated it to Aung San Suu Kyi, who at the time was a political prisoner in Myanmar. Earlier this year, Bono spoke about being “let down” by her alleged human rights violations, and decided to give the song to someone else. On Songs of Surrender, they’ve taken the song back, retitled it “Walk On (Ukraine),” and rewritten it with references to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. (The song now opens with the line, “If the comic takes the stage and no one laughs.”) But “Walk On” was already an inspiring, uplifting anthem about hope and perseverance that exists independent of the association they gave it. They could have dedicated it to the people of Ukraine without changing one word of it.

The more delightful moments on the record start with the Edge’s stunning falsetto take on “Desire,” which turns it into a futuristic, Motown-tinged romp that wouldn’t have been out of place on Achtung Baby. “Dirty Day,” an underrated track from 1993’s Zooropa, subtracts the original’s electronics for cello and a Waits-ian vocal delivery that doesn’t update it so much as make it fit in better with the context of the record. “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” cements its reputation as eternally unbreakable, “Until the End of the World” turns into a well-suited country gospel tune, and both “All I Want Is You” and “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” are still heartrending even in their refashioned states. Elsewhere, Bono gives some phenomenal performances, pushing his voice to its limits, like he does as he soars through “Beautiful Day” and “Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own.”

But all of these highlights could have been manifested in a concert or other live performance and issued as a B-side or fan club single; nothing here is unforgettable or in danger of replacing its original. The arrangements are formulaic, regressing back to the stripped-down candlelit era of the original MTV’s Unplugged. At worst, Songs of Surrender is an overindulgence. At best, it’s a pleasant interlude. But it isn’t something that’s going to alter their legacy or the trajectory of their art in any direction, and U2 has always made it clear that we should expect more from them than that.

Malang

Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Kunal Kemmu, Anil Kapoor

Director: Mohit Suri

In Malang, it’s Goa where drugs, alcohol and blood flow in abundance. Two strangers meet and decide to go for the ultimate thrills of life only to realise that it may not take them anywhere. But who cares till it looks good on big screen.

Advait (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Sara (Disha Patani) meet in Goa and begin to live life the way they want, which simply means beaches, bikes and a lot of steam. Just when their love begins getting thicker, they’re hit by a tragedy. Wouldn’t spoil the fun for you but it, kind of, changes their lives forever.

Because it’s a Mohit Suri (Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain) film, there would be channeling of some inner violence. This time, it takes an even uglier turn as Advait turns out to be the one on a killing spree. Don’t ask me why. Consider it just happens. From here onwards, it’s a war between him and two cops, Agashey (Anil Kapoor) and Michael (Kunal Kemmu).

In between, there are peddlers, shooters and trigger happy cops. In short, it has everything you would have expected in a Goa-based thriller.

It’s the writer Aseem Arora whose imprint can be seen on the film as the characters deliver punchlines in a matter of fact tone. It immediately sticks with the viewers.

Consider this one: A bunch of media people are asking personal questions to a crime branch officer who heckles one of the journalists. As the journalist retorts in the background, Anil Kapoor takes a sigh and says, “Ye journalist log aaj kal Crime Patrol bahut dekhne lage hain.”

Then there is a black drugs kingpin who speaks in Hindi and Marathi when threatened with a gun. It was funny, to me at least.

What works tremendously in the film’s favour is its pace. Even if the developments are quite predictable, they take place at a rapid pace. The primary characters have been given ample time to establish different branches of the story and they have, more or less, done justice to their parts.

Malang starts with Disha Patani emerging out of the sea a la Ursula Andress and goes on to track the party scene in the city. Then comes the cops and some large-scale planning. Overall, a revenge story with airtight screenplay by Aniruddha Guha.

While Kapur and Patani are up for the challenge, Anil Kapoor is the one to hold it up above the water. Except for a cynical laugh, which will remind you of Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Kick, Kapoor’s game is on point. Kemmu also surprises in some scenes.

What doesn’t work at all is the repetition of the theme and the lack of innovation in the narrative. Glamorous songs, ripped muscles and overhead camera can’t put a curtain on the lack of urgency.

However, all said and done, Malang is an entertaining film and delivers what the trailer promises. For 135-minutes, you can go ‘Malang’ (ecstatic).

The most powerful moments in the revised version of “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992,” Anna Deavere Smith’s landmark drama about the uprising that followed the verdict in the savage police beating case of Rodney King, involve video of horrendous violence.

When footage of officers brutally pummeling King is shown, the audience at the Mark Taper Forum, where the play had its premiere 30 years ago, is overcome with silence. The video is well known, having been part of the national media coverage at the time, but history has only added to the weight of what we’re watching.

Harrowing video of unarmed Black men being assaulted by officers has become an all-too-common tragic reality. Cellphone, bodycam and surveillance videos have turned us all into eyewitnesses of deadly police brutality.

Video can’t tell the whole story. Where there’s a camera viewpoint, there will always be debate about what lies outside of the frame. But the presentation compels theatergoers to see violence in all its horrific bodily specificity — to take in the inhumanity of the perpetrators and the dehumanization of the victims.

The footage of a prone Rodney King being assailed by batons isn’t the only video that’s shown in this new production of “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992.” Grainy surveillance footage of the shooting of Latasha Harlins, a 15-year-old Black girl, by Soon Ja Du, a Korean American convenience store owner who thought she was stealing an orange juice, is also included.

This incident, coming on the heels of the videotaped King beating, contributed to the civil unrest that resulted in approximately $1 billion in damages. (Korean American-owned businesses were disproportionately affected). More than 50 people died, thousands were injured and thousands more were arrested (a majority of whom were Latino, mostly young men).

The production also includes raw footage of the attack of Reginald Denny, the white truck driver who was pulled from his vehicle by a group of Black men and viciously beaten in an incident that became a symbol of the explosive rage and destruction that seized the city for days. The effect of these videos overpowers thought, but the production insists that we not only bear witness to what is in the frame but also contemplate what’s beyond it. (In the example of Denny, this includes information about the rescue by Black residents who risked their lives to save his.)

In “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992,” Smith explores causes and consequences of events that are too momentous to have simple explanations. What is most radical about the play, then and now, is its refusal to dispense answers. Smith doesn’t editorialize. The only side she’s on is the side of humanity.

Her theatrical method is to listen to voices that likely would have had trouble hearing one another. Her play, composed of excerpts from the more than 300 interviews she conducted on the ground in L.A. in the year following the uprising, is a kind of talking mosaic, in which clashing perspectives can peacefully coexist.

Jeanne Sakata in “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992” at the Mark Taper Forum.

(Craig Schwartz)

The play, originally a solo work performed by Smith herself, has had many iterations since its Taper premiere in 1993, including an abridged 2000 film adaptation. This new version, directed by Gregg T. Daniel, has been reconceived for a five-person cast.

The actors (Hugo Armstrong, Lovensky Jean-Baptiste, Lisa Reneé Pitts, Jeanne Sakata, Sabina Zúñiga Varela) take turns animating the various speakers. The diversity of the ensemble informs the range of characters, but the theatrical effect was blunted by the somewhat shaky command of the script by a few of the actors at Sunday’s press performance, which had been delayed a few days to give the actors more time, according to a Center Theatre Group representative.

I was quite excited about the prospect of seeing “Twilight” performed by other talents. But the experience only enhanced my understanding of its power as a solo work and the special qualities that Smith brought to it as a writer-performer.

I missed above all the prodigious moral stature of Smith’s stage presence, which shadowed the community of voices channeling through her. She found the theatrical contours of other people’s humanity in her own. The interviewees’ race, class, gender and point of view were no obstacles for her. This elasticity of acting is a key part of the play’s vision, offering implicit proof that the divisions among us are bridgeable. Daniel’s production honors this to a degree, but the ensemble casting attenuates the effect.

Smith’s handling of language was also, I now see, instrumental to how “Twilight” works. The figures in the play become known through their speech acts. They are in conversation with an interviewer and should not be treated as though they are Chekhovian characters lost in their own inner lives. The rhetorical dimension of their presences must be prioritized. Muttering subtext is beside the point.

Lisa Reneé Pitts speaks while swaddling a baby in "Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992"

Lisa Reneé Pitts in “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992” at Mark Taper Forum.

(Craig Schwartz)

Pitts, who brings to life several key Black politicians and activists (including Congresswoman Maxine Waters), is the most adept of the cast members at skillfully deploying oratory. Despite some patches of unsteadiness, Sakata has moments of a piercing authenticity — devastating pleas of understanding from marginalized immigrant corners.

Yee Eun Nam’s projection design is the most dynamic aspect of the staging. Efren Delgadillo Jr.’s scenic design wisely opts for unencumbered sets, but the movement of the actors has a revolving door quality that can seem pedestrian, even when a role is performed by more than one cast member.

But this revival comes to us at a time of protracted crisis, offering us invaluable historical perspective on our own combustible condition. The play is updated for an audience that is still grappling with the 2020 murder of George Floyd and the protest movement and national reckoning that followed in its wake.

The words of former L.A. Times journalist Héctor Tobar shed light on how the uprising was larger than one sociological event. He names the “Latino poverty riot” as what happened in the “vacuum” that was created by the breakdown of order. Tobar’s wisdom is invited back near the end of the play to link the George Floyd and Rodney King videos as catalysts for the awakening of consciousness “through the public dramatizations of Black suffering.”

The stubborn persistence of institutional racism, police violence, a bifurcated justice system and economic inequality might suggest resignation and a reason to despair. But “Twilight” connects us to the long thread of struggle. It asks us to do something that has become even more challenging in our digitally siloed world — make room for another truth, no matter how divergent from our own.

You may know your way around our

If your TV show has a special young orphan in desperate need of a fearsome caregiver you know what to do. You call Pedro Pascal. Between The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, he has firmly entrenched himself as pop culture’s go-to surrogate dad. But if you could only rely on one them, who would you choose: Din Djarin or Joel Miller? Which Pedro padre is the preeminent papa is the difficult question my editors posed to me, a parent myself. Only, I’ve never hunted a single bounty, killed a giant fungus monster, or traveled to either Wyoming or Tatooine. So to settle this fictional father showdown, I’m going to pit these Pedro Pascal characters head-to-head with specific traits you’d hope to see out of any good dad whether the live in a galaxy far, far away or a dystopian monster wasteland. Because kids everywhere need the same things.

What are those traits? We’re using this excellent list of exemplerary parental qualities as our categories, along with an extra one I promise every good parent needs.

Lucasfilm/HBO

(Note: We’re only judging Joel based on Pedro Pascal’s version of the character. The Last of Us video game franchise—especially Part II—has no bearing on this daddy duel.)

Showing Love

Din Djarin dedicated his life to walking Mandalore’s ancient Way. Yet he loves his son so much he willingly removed his helmet to show Grogu his face, making himself an Apostate in the process. That’s really tough to top. But Joel did exactly that when he doomed all of mankind to save Ellie’s life. He chose her over literally everyone else on the planet. He then gave her plausible deniability about what he’d done so she didn’t have to live with that guilt. That’s love. Was that right or wrong? Impossible to say. But what is possible is naming a winner in this category.

EDGE: Joel

Providing Support

Children need praise and encouragement, obviously. Less obvious is who gets the nod here. This might sound like another Joel category on the surface, because he not only listens to Ellie’s needs he also frequently compliments, encourages, and soothes her. But Din is petty supportive, too. He found a Jedi master to to train Grogu, gave him his blessing to continue his training under Luke Skywalker despite how much it broke his heart, then welcomed back Grogu when the Child chose to be with his dad instead. Plus, you know, there’s the whole keeping him safe from an evil empire thing. That counts, too. That definitely counts.

EDGE: Din

Lucasfilm

Setting Limits

Din spends half his time telling Grogu what not to do. Yet we’ve seen how ineffective he is at setting limits. The little green guy still eats too many cookies, plays with parts of the ship he shouldn’t, noshes on frog eggs, and “squeezies” Anzellans. Meanwhile, Joel made it clear to Ellie she is not allowed to wander off, lest a Clicker tear her apart. And since no Clicker tore her apart, Joel did a pretty good job setting literal limits.

EDGE: Joel

Liane Hentscher/HBO

Being a Role Model

Joel has a temper and is quick to violence. Also, he sure did murder a whole lot of innocent people in his past. So…uh…yeah, we’re giving this one to the honorable, far more in-control Din Djarin. By a lot.

EDGE: Din

Din Djarin in a jungle forest on The Book of Boba Fett
Lucasfilm

Teaching Responsibility

Has Din taught Grogu anything? Grogu is 50 years old and doesn’t even know his Aurebesh alphabet yet! But do you see them practicing their letters or learning how to count? Meanwhile, Joel gives Ellie history lessons and shows her how to safely operate firearms. Normally that last thing would be so, so, so bad, but in a dystopian world full of monsters that’s like teaching a normal kid how to do laundry. (Speaking of, Joel should probably teach Ellie how to get blood and dead fungal vines out of clothes.)

EDGE: Joel

Liane Hentscher/HBO

Providing a Range of Experiences

This one is kind of unfair. There’s not exactly a wide range of experiences you can offer a child in a dying world where survival is your only task every day. Plus, Joel doesn’t even always have a truck, let alone a jetpack or a spaceship that makes planet-hopping easy. If he did we know for sure he’d take Ellie to the Moon, but until that happens Din wins this one by default.

EDGE: Din

The Mandalorian flies while carrying Baby Yoda, a.k.a. Grogu.
Disney+

Showing Respect

Joel loved Ellie enough to ask Tommy to keep her safe when he knew his brother was better prepared to do so. But he respected Ellie enough to let her ultimately make that decision. Did he undo all of that by not letting her know the truth about her immunity? Maybe, but you could also argue he respected her enough to let her live it without guilt. As for Din, he let Grogu decide himself wehther to live as either a Jedi or a Mandalorian. He then respected his child’s choice when he changed his mind. This…this is a hard one.

After lengthy consideration (which you don’t have to deal with because this is print) I have to go with Joel. The difference is how many time we saw him respond to Ellie’s emotional needs on a level Din hasn’t had to because of Grogu’s relative age. Joel respects Ellie’s feelings and pain in a way that is pretty moving, especially because we know Joel himself is not always in control of his. Treating your child as their own person with their own emotional maturity is the ultimate sign of respect.

EDGE: Joel

The Last of Us will adapt the games Part II across multiple seasons, season two will star Bella ramsay as Ellie
HBO

Patience

This is my own addition to these categories, because if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a father it’s that being a good dad is often about having patience. Kids don’t always do what you want, let alone when you want. And you never stop being a parent. You’re on the job 24/7, no matter how tired, sick, or busy you ae. So it’s easy to be a good dad when everything is going right and your child is behaving. But the real test comes when they just threw applesauce on the wall while the doorbell is ringing and you’re on the phone with the doctor because you’ve been sick for three days.

And it’s pretty obvious which Pedro Pascal dad has more patience. It’s the one without the severe anger issues capable of saying very hurtful things.

EDGE: Din

The Mandalorian din Djarin holds Grogu in the cockpit of his ship
Lucasfilm

Final Verdict

Am I a good dad? I certainly hope so. I try to be everyday. But am I a dummy because I added an eighth category and ended up with a tie on a list I fully controlled? Certainly. because now I need a final, bonus tie-breaker trait to settle this. Fortunately I know just what that is.

Not Always Wearing a Helmet So Your Kid Can Actually See You

Easy.

EDGE AND WINNER OF THE PEDRO PASCAL DAD BATTLE: Joel from The Last of Us

Pedro Pascal's Joel looks stern with a rifle on his back on The Last of Us
HBO

Don’t take it personally, though Din. This ruling might change after we see more of both your fictional dads in action.

Plus, no matter what happens on The Mandalorian, you’ll always be a better father than this guy.

Fortnite Chapter 4 began by introducing the beloved Shockwave Hammer in Season 1, and now Season 2 has swapped that blunt instrument for a more elegant weapon: the Kinetic Blade katana. This thing is incredible, and, like the hammer before it, will very often be the deciding factor between victory and defeat this season.

There’s a big difference between being just decent with the Kinetic Blade and being great with it. Anybody can spam the yeet attack and get lucky sometimes, but once you actually know what you’re doing with the katana–meaning you know not just how to use it but also when–then you’ll be slashing and throwing your foes all over the place in no time. Fortunately, you don’t have to do this on your own. Below you’ll find a complete breakdown of this weapon, from our full explanation of the mechanics down to the combat scenarios in which you’ll need to pull it out.

Now Playing: Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 2 Launch Official Gameplay Trailer

How exactly the Kinetic Blade works

The Kinetic Blade fills the same niche that the hammer did, as a tool for quick movement that also has some serious combat capabilities when used correctly and in the right situations. But in more literal terms, the Kinetic Blade is a whole new gameplay mechanic that doesn’t work like the hammer did at all, really. So we’re all starting fresh with this thing, which requires a bit more finesse than the hammer did.

The Kinetic Blade can do two things: a dash attack, which will propel you forward pretty quickly and does 60 damage, and a two-part knockback attack, which does 35 damage on the first hit and 70 on the second. And the second hit will also send the target flying back from you, causing fall damage if you’re elevated enough.

That knockback attack, by the way, is not a combo–you only need to click/pull the trigger once and your character will automatically do the entire knockback sequence. So try not to button mash with the Kinetic Blade or else you might accidentally lock yourself into the lengthy animation a second time when you don’t mean to.

Like last season’s Shockwave Hammer, the Kinetic Blade is primarily for mobility as you move around the map. You can and should use it as a weapon, of course, because that fall damage is no joke with all the height added to the map this season, but you’ll use it for getting around pretty much constantly. While each dash won’t take you as far as the hammer did, it takes half the time to recharge–and you can use it to dash straight up in the air three times in a row, letting you get much better height than the hammer ever did.

The best way to use the Kinetic Blade as a weapon against other players

When it is time to fight, you shouldn’t use the Kinetic Blade as your primary weapon most of the time–guns are still far more efficient at deleting your foes in most scenarios. But there are occasions during every round of battle royale in which whipping this thing out is the right thing to do. Namely: whenever you’re about to fight someone near a big ledge, like on Loot Island, the top of a skyscraper in Mega City, any of the castles around the map, or any of the many cliff faces on the island.

For these situations, the Kinetic Blade is a King of the Hill weapon–that’s referring to the children’s game rather than the TV show. So what it’s really good for is just clearing people off of your hill, whether it be the house on the Loot Island, the top of a skyscraper in Mega City, any of the castles around the map, or just an actual hill. Players do have plenty of methods for surviving getting yeeted this season–like the Aerialist augment and the Kinetic Blade itself, which can do the dash attack at any time when you’re in the air.

But even if you don’t finish them off, clearing your opponent off the high ground and taking it for yourself is a great way to turn a fight around in your favor. And the Kinetic Blade is perfect for that.

The best place to practice this way of using the sword is on the Loot Island that spawns in mid-round. Instead of using a zipline to get up to it, use one of the rifts that litter the ground beneath it and dive in at the roof of the house that sits on it. If somebody is hanging out on that roof, hit them with the knockback attack and fire up your best taunt emote while they fall all the way back to the ground. But even if they pop a glider or get a sword dash off to save themselves, they’re not on that roof anymore, and you are. Advantage: you.

High-ground battles aren’t the only main combat use for the sword, though. It’s also great for, well, scaring the crap out of people. A big element of success in any competitive multiplayer game is aggression–when you surprise somebody and get them on their back foot, that’s usually good for you and bad for them. So while dashing at somebody who’s already shooting at you will frequently be a bad idea, using the dash to start a fight has a great chance of throwing your target into a panic and making them easy pickings.

And while most folks will reflexively use the sword to try to flee when they’re overrun by an opposing team–that’s usually the right thing to do, for the record–it’s got decent combat potential in those situations because of the aforementioned panic factor. It won’t necessarily even the odds, but it might give you a real shot–we’ve already lost track of how many times a panic dash right into somebody’s face has saved us when we thought we were seconds from death.

If you’ve made it this far, you should be ready to take on the world with the Kinetic Blade. Just remember not to use it as a crutch when it’s time to fight–spamming sword attacks is a surefire ticket to your digital grave. Knowing when to use it is half the battle.

International distributor Eccho Rights has inked landmark deals for Turkish drama series “Golden Boy” with broadcasters in Sweden and Finland.

The show, which has enjoyed huge success on Turkey’s Star TV since launching in September 2022, is the first Turkish drama to be picked up by Swedish and Finnish broadcasters.

In Sweden, TV4 acquired “Golden Boy” for its TV4Gold and Sjuan linear channels, as well as streamers CMore and TV4 Play.

In Finland, Eccho Rights’ deal with MTV Oy represents the first time ever that a Turkish series has been licensed by a Finnish broadcast group, with “Golden Boy” to stream on CMore and Katsomo in Finland.

Produced by OGM Pictures for Star TV, “Golden Boy” is a family drama and tale of jealousy that follows two sisters, Seyran and Suna, whose paths cross with golden boy Ferit.

The sisters’ lives change forever when Ferit decides to marry Seyran instead of Suna. Seyran is the new bride in a world full of betrayals, lies and secrets, while Suna starts making plans for revenge to take back her stolen future. The series stars Afra Saraoğlu, Mert Ramazan Demir and Çetin Tekindor.

“We are thrilled to once again be at the forefront of bringing Turkish drama to new audiences,” said Melis Hamacioglu, Eccho Rights’s director of digital media acquisition and content sales for the MENA region, India, Pakistan and Western Europe.

“Golden Boy’s extraordinary success so far makes it an easy choice for broadcasters looking to test something new.”

“Golden Boy” was Turkey’s most watched series of 2022 and it has continued to perform strongly in 2023, regularly ranking No. 1 in the country.

The series has sold to more than 35 territories worldwide since its launch.

Making their Canadian premieres are: “El Equipo,” a harrowing 40-year journey through the work of a resilient team of forensic scientists as they uncover and identify the victims of authoritarian regimes across Latin America and the world; “Is There Anybody Out There?,” a filmmaker’s search for others with the same rare disability as her, never having seen anyone with a body like hers before; “It’s Only Life After All,” a poignant look at the folk-rock duo Indigo Girls, offering a timely look into the obstacles, activism and life lessons of two queer friends who never expected to make it big; “Joan Baez I Am Noise,” a searingly honest look at the musician on and off the stage—from lifelong emotional struggles to her civil rights work with MLK and a heartbreaking romance with Bob Dylan; and “Time Bomb Y2K,” a revisionist look at the rising hysteria ignited by the discovery of a computer flaw that could have ignited the largest technological disaster in human history as the new millennium approached.

Oscar nominee Ciarán Hinds is well known among “Game of Thrones” fans for playing Mance Rayder, the king beyond the wall and leader of the wildlings. Hinds appeared in five episodes of the Emmy-winning HBO fantasy series across three seasons. In a recent interview with The Independent, Hinds got honest about not exactly loving all the sex in “Game of Thrones.”

“I was rather put off by the amount of sexuality that was going on in it, because it was taking away from the actual political storytelling,” Hinds said. “But that’s business, I guess, from their perspective.”

Hinds also spoke to The Independent about the increase of intimacy coordinators on sets in recent years. Hinds’ daughter, Aoife, is also an actor and worked closely with intimacy coordinators while starring opposite Paul Mescal in Hulu’s “Normal People.”

“I was asking her [about them] because it seems to me strange,” Hinds said. “I didn’t come from that generation. Anything we had to create together, in scenes of a sexual nature, we just talked about it. It’s about how we tell the story together, so I didn’t understand why intimacy coordinators were suddenly everywhere. As actors, you let your own spirits inform what you’re doing. Aoife said, ‘No, it was fantastic because your own emotional context was put on hold, and it became not quite balletic, but not your libido.”

Toni Collette recently told The Times UK that she has asked intimacy coordinators to leave set in the past because their presence created more anxiety on set.

“I think it’s only been a couple of times where they’ve been brought in, and I have very much trusted and felt at ease with the people I was working with,” Collette said. “It just felt like those people who were brought in to make me feel more at ease were actually making me feel more anxious. They weren’t helping, so I asked them to leave.”

Twice-impeached former president Donald Trump is convinced he’s getting arrested on Tuesday and, though he may be calling it a “witch hunt,” among other things, Jimmy Fallon thinks there might be at least one aspect of getting apprehended that Trump is going to enjoy.

During his monologue on Monday night, Fallon joked that Trump actually deserves some credit for his Truth Social post announcing his arrest on Saturday, saying that “it’s not often that everyone sends out a ‘Save the Date’ for their own arrest.” Of course, it’s worth noting that’s Trump’s claim was not officially confirmed by authorities, or even by anyone on his own team.

In his post on Saturday, Trump wrote that “THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK.”

“First of all, at least he’s finally admitting he’s the former president,” Fallon joked. “That’s progress. Progress! Baby steps.”

Looking at the actual process of an arrest, Fallon added that, given the scenario that led to the charges he might be indicted on, Trump will like being patted down.

“Trump is not excited about being arrested, fingerprinted or asking for bail. But he is excited to get frisked,” Fallon said. “Yep, police are gonna be like ‘You have the right to remain silent…now, but also, in general. Just think about it! Just something to think about.’”

That said, the “Tonight Show” host also argued that there are easier ways for authorities to go about getting what they need.

“You know, if they want Trump’s fingerprints, they could have just looked at the Cheeto dust on his Diet Coke cans,” he mocked.

You can watch Fallon’s full monologue in the video above.

Florence Pugh proudly champions experimental looks on the red carpet—be it the red peplum dress and matching veiled cowboy hat from Robert Wun’s debut couture collection that she wore to the Critics’ Circle Awards, or the fluttering tangerine Nina Ricci gown from Harris Reed’s debut for the house she chose for the BAFTAs.

Pugh frequently turns to Pierpaolo Piccioli for head-turning Valentino creations, often selecting his most playful looks. Case in point: the preppy-meets-peekaboo ensemble she wore for the screening of A Good Person in New York on March 20, comprised of a silk cady gown featuring a cheeky open back and floor-sweeping maxi skirt from the house’s pre-fall 2023 collection.

Florence swerved a frothy gown in favor of a dress with a twist.

Coming shortly after the autumn/winter 2023 collections, where ties cropped up at Alexander McQueen and David Koma, among others, Pugh’s custom look incorporated a skinny tie that peeped from beneath the collar of her dress, offering a contemporary spin on the staid old office accessory. Should the actor wish to wear another fresh take on ties, there were plenty to choose from in Pierpaolo’s autumn/winter 2023 Valentino collection, aptly named “Black Tie,” where they were styled with shirting, sheer blouses and dresses.

“I always think about what Valentino was about—it was about the idea of lifestyle, the perfect life, success,” Piccioli told Vogue of his showcase. “I think, now what I’m doing is more switched to the idea of the lifestyle of community, our community, communities that are about the sort of gang of kids who are saying, look, we can wear the same sort of clothes, but giving them their personality with that.” He’s found the perfect muse for his new vision.

On Monday, Oscar-winning documentarian Asif Kapadia told a roomful of CPH:DOX Conference attendees that he might have never directed a nonfiction film had it not been for Harvey Weinstein “killing” his first narrative feature film, “The Warrior.”

“The Warrior,” starring the late Irrfan Khan (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “The Lunchbox”), is about a mercenary directed by an evil warlord to wreak havoc on a rural village in Rajasthan by forcing the poor inhabitants to pay taxes. In 2003, the film won two BAFTAs for outstanding debut and outstanding British Film. But according to Kapadia, the film garnered no attention outside of England due to Weinstein, who bought worldwide rights – excluding the U.K. – in 2001.

“I was flown out to New York to meet Weinstein, and everyone was saying how great it was that the film had sold to Miramax,” Kapadia said. “I remember saying why I did not feel good about (the deal).”

At the meeting, Kapadia described a roomful of initially friendly executives who quickly became silent and could not look the director in the eye after Weinstein entered the conference room.

“The Warrior” starred the late Irrfan Khan (Courtesy of Miramax/Everett Collection)

“Weinstein pushed this pile of scripts towards me and said, ‘Pick a movie (because) your next film has to be with me, or I don’t release “The Warrior.”’ And not only that, he says, ‘Your next three movies have to be with me.’”

Not wanting to be locked into a contract, Kapadia refused the offer, and Weinstein “killed the film.”

“Even now ‘The Warrior’ cannot be shown around the world,” the helmer told moderator Thom Powers. “Even Irrfan Khan tried to get that film shown. Now nobody even knows who owns it. I can look at the experience now and go: ‘That was a big opportunity for (my drama career), and it died before it began on my first film.’ So, I had to find another way.”

Kapadia’s alternative route was documentary filmmaking.

“I had a bit more control (on a doc),” he explained. “I was running it, and I was in charge of the edit. Also, the less money you have, the more power you have.”

The career shift paid off. Kapadia went on to make a lengthy list of acclaimed docus, including “Senna,” “Amy” and “Diego Maradona.”

As for his Oscar-winning portrait of Amy Winehouse, Kapadia described the race to get to the Academy Awards in 2016 as “great” but also “exhausting.”

“It started off with a movie and an audience in a room and the emotion of people feeling collectively,” Kapadia said. “And it finished with politics. (The Oscar race) felt very political.”

The director went on to express his concern over docus’ theatrical viability and the consolidation of streamers.

“I don’t want cinema docs to only exist at film festivals or during award season,” he said. “Award season is great, but it’s not everything. It shouldn’t be everything. There should be room for other stuff. What we have to watch out for as we have this rise of authoritarianism in politics is also a rise of a certain few people who make the decision about what we are about to see – everywhere in the world. Is that good? I don’t know.”

Kapadia is at CPH:DOX with his latest film “Creature,” a silent doc that captures a dance performance choreographed by Akram Khan.

“Creature” is a silent doc that captures a dance performance choreographed by Akram Khan

“Creature” only exists because of Covid,” the director explained. “Akram Khan created a show, and they couldn’t perform it because of COVID. Someone contacted me and said, ‘Would you be interested in doing something?’ ”

Kapadia was, and ended up shooting the film over a 10-day period during the pandemic.

“Senna” took me five years to make, and “Amy” and “Diego” took about three years,” Kapadia said. “So I was like: ‘Let’s do this film in two weeks. Fuck it.’ It’s funny being here in Denmark, because, in a way it’s like Dogma. It was like: ‘Here are these restrictions. What can you do with restrictions and let’s just try and make a movie.’ ”

Kapadia added: “It’s been fun doing art and not worrying about algorithms.”

Google has rolled out its March 2023 updates for all current-generation Pixel mobile devices this week. The Google Pixel Watch gets fall detection, a power-saving Digital Clock watch-face, improved alarm support, and other bug fixes and improvements to bring it in line with the rest of our best smartwatch list.

If it feels familiar, it’s because Google announced Fall Detection on February 28, reiterating it in a blog post detailing its March feature Drop for Pixels (opens in new tab). Fall detection is the marquee feature here. Much like with the Apple Watch 8, you’ll be able to have your Pixel Watch automatically detect if you’ve been in a fall and help dial emergency services to come to your aid.

It’ll do this with a prompt that allows you to choose whether the fall was severe enough to contact emergency services. If you don’t make a decision within 60 seconds, the watch will contact emergency services automatically. The Watch will be able to automatically speak to the emergency services for you if you can’t, though you do have the option to override it and use your own voice.

The other really big feature brings in a power-saving watch face. If your Pixel Watch is off because the battery is low, you’ll still be able to check the time via the Digital Clock Watch Face upon tapping the crown. It’s a helpful little feature that should give you confidence your smart watch can still function as a watch even if the smart features are too power-hungry to be useful. A similar battery-saving update comes to the quick settings tile for the feature, letting you toggle it on or off with a single tap.

There are a slew of other miscellaneous fixes associated with this update – even if not entirely attention-grabbing. The touch screen is now more sensitive, rotating the crown now wakes the watch, and a bug that had some users experienced false starts or delays on the Pixel Watch’s alarm functionality has been fixed.

You no longer have to toggle your settings individually to try and eke more juice out of the Pixel Watch, as a new quick-tap feature lets you enter a power saving mode almost instantly.  (Image credit: Future | Alex Walker-Todd)

 Small changes, big impact

Fall detection is a feature that has proven to be life-saving in the past. It’s an excellent addition to any smartwatch, and Google’s inclusion of it here personifies better late than never. The best Apple Watches have had the feature for months, but the update is for the Google Pixel Watch only – Fitbit device owners will miss out on the feature. Unsurprising, given Google has been starving Fitbit of features for some time now.

There are limitations, naturally. It’s not available in all countries, your phone needs to be nearby, or it may not even detect the fall if the motion sensors tell the Watch you were doing something innocuous that would account for your sudden loss of momentum. Tech isn’t magic and features fail once in a while. It is still better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not even have the option.

Moving on, the Pixel Watch’s battery is not the best we’ve seen smartwatches. The low-power Digital Clock feature is a band-aid, that’s true. It’s still a useful improvement to be able to check the time confidently on your watch without fearing it would be dead.

If aliens have been patiently waiting to take over Earth, they’re plenty hacked off about the environmental damage being done on a daily basis. What kind of world are humans leaving them?

That’s one of the cheeky questions behind a just-launched campaign from plant-based startup WhatIF Foods. Using a whimsical scenario to tackle a serious subject, the brand enlists little green beings from space—along with dinosaurs, flying cows and zombies—to formally introduce itself to the U.S. market.

The animated ads, from agency of record fable.works, lean into WhatIF’s superfood-centric recipe and regenerative farming process, aiming to educate consumers about the origins of its milk alternative and instant noodles.

The approach is a departure in the category, where much of the marketing in recent years has focused on products’ flavor profiles, with the goal of convincing shoppers that plant-based products taste as good as animal-derived food.

“Aliens becoming regenerative farming advocates so that they’ll have a nicer planet to absorb into their galaxial takeover felt more interesting than ‘planet-friendly,’” Rick Williams, the agency’s co-founder, told Adweek. The creative also speaks to the brand’s mission to “constantly improve, listen, research and innovate.”

Playful with a cause

The upbeat tone, “fun color palette” and cute characters are meant to be eye-catching but not flippant, agency creatives said.

“In the age of doomscrolling, who wants to hear more bad news?” Marcel Yunes, agency co-founder, told Adweek. “WhatIF is such a band of optimists, the playfulness just felt natural even in the face of a myriad of global concerns.”

Fable.works won the account in summer 2022 and partnered with animation house LOBO and the music-special effects team at Human Worldwide to produce the work under the tagline “A Better Better.” In addition to the anthem spot, there are several 15-second vignettes, with additional ads via social, out of home and truck wraps.

Beyond tasty

With voiceover from WhatIF’s top exec, the campaign highlights the company’s BamNut Milk, which debuts in a space full of entrenched non-dairy competitors like Oatly, Silk, So Delicious and Califia Farms, to name a few.

Rashmika Mandanna seems to be done with the Saami Saami dance. The actress, in a Twitter AMA session, turned down a fan’s request to dance to the Pushpa song.

The Pushpa 2 star was hosting an Ask Me Anything session on Twitter when a fan requested Rashmika to dance to the song with him if they get a chance to meet. However, Rashmika turned down the request, suggesting that they could try something else.

“I want to do dance with you in “Saami-Saami”…………May I ???????” the fan’s tweet read. “I’ve done saami saami step tooooo many times.. that now I feel like I’ll have issues with my back when I get older.. why you do this to me re.. let’s do something else when me meet,” she replied.

Yes Studios, the Israeli producer and distributor behind “Fauda” and “Shtisel,” has boarded “Unsilenced,” a six-part series about sexual violence which is inspired by Odelia Carmon’s novel “The Confidante.”

The multi-layered series stars Yaakov Zada Daniel (“Fauda”), Avraham Shalom Levi (“Shtisel”), Nelly Mira Rubin (“Fire Dance”), Dana Meinrath and Irit Nathan Benedek.

Loosely inspired by actual events, “Unsilenced” is set pre-#MeToo, in the early 2000’s, when powerful men could readily mask and perpetuate abhorrent behaviors with the help of people they installed around themselves.

The story revolves around a recently elected President who continually forces himself upon a new member of his team, a bright and ambitious young woman from a humble background. Desperate to keep her job, she asks the President’s chief of staff for help, but he shows his complicity with the situation by first looking the other way and then, as things escalate, by engineering a brutal campaign to discredit her and keep her quiet. Refusing to be silenced for being a victim, she bravely pursues her claims of abuse, and is eventually joined by other women that the President had attacked as he rose through the political ranks.

Each of the first five episodes is told from a different point of view: two from individual victims, then one each from the President’s chief of staff, his wife, and the President himself. The final episode brings all their stories together in a potent resolution.

“Unsilenced” was created by Avraham Shalom Levi, Tamar Marom, Moish Goldberg and Einat Zilber Damari, with Carmon as co-creator. The series was written by Avraham Shalom Levi and Tamar Marom, directed by Moish Goldberg and produced by Great Productions and yes TV. Yes Studios handles worldwide distribution for the completed series and the scripted format.

“Impactful stories like the one so skilfully captured in “Unsilenced” have driven female empowerment and encouraged women to use their voices against those who exploit positions of power,” said Sharon Levi, managing director of Yes Studios. Levi says the lead character, operating in the pre-#metoo era, “was a pioneer and while we also hear points of view from several finely drawn and complex characters in this series – including from the President himself – there is, in reality, only one truth.”

The executive says she’s confident the show’s main story arc and different perspectives in each episode will “provoke discussion amongst audiences everywhere.”

While “Unsilenced” was inspired true events, characters and the events portrayed in the series have been fictionalized for dramatic purposes.

As X-citement ramps up for the return of the X-Men in animation, more details are being released about the upcoming X-Men ’97 and what fans can expect from the reboot.

Celebrating 60 years of X-Men in comics, Marvel hosted an event on March 16 bringing together various X-creators from the six decades of the team’s history. One section of the X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event focused on the X-Men in animation, which of course includes the team’s future in the upcoming X-Men ’97 animated series coming to Disney+.

The series, first announced just over a year ago, will be the MCU‘s next animated venture, following What If…? and I Am Groot. A reboot of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ’97 will see a return of the fan-favorite characters as they cope with a world without Professor X.

A Sinister Foe for the X-Men in Reboot

X-Men ’97 writer Beau DeMayo confirmed at the X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event that Mister Sinister would be the primary antagonist in the upcoming animated series.

The master of cloning, Mister Sinister (Nathaniel Essex) will once again be played by Christopher Britton, who voiced the character in the original X-Men: The Animated Series.

Marvel

DeMayo teased Mister Sinister’s “pretty foolproof plan to destroy the X-Men once and for all,” adding that the villain is one of his “very favorite character[s]:”

“A very, very, very, very favorite character of mine and many others, Mr. Sinister, will rear his ugly head from the past with a pretty foolproof plan to destroy the X-Men once and for all.”

Animated Mister Sinister
Marvel

However, Mister Sinister will not be the only familiar X-Men foe to appear in the series, though the other will seemingly not be taking on a villainous role. As previously confirmed, Magneto will actually be leading the X-Men this season, filling the void left by Professor X after his departure from Earth.

Using the Villains to Tell a Heartwarming Story

This shifting of the classic X-Men enemy, Magneto, into a hero is not new to comics fans — the character was grouped in with the heroes in the original Secret Wars, for instance. But, more than that, it is a testament to the overall theme of “the power of empathy” explained by DeMayo at the event.

Magneto is a character that represents aggressive justice for mutants and is often put in conversation with Professor X and his dream of equality for mutants. Empathy plays an important role in that central conversation with the X-Men as characters.

Perhaps, this theme of empathy will extend to Mister Sinister as well as Magneto, given that empathy is not a selective concept. While Mister Sinister’s plan may be “pretty foolproof,” it is certainly possible that the notoriously evil character would not have factored in the empathetic nature of the X-Men into his scheme.

X-Men ’97 will release on Disney+ this fall.

Rachel Zegler wants to return to the DC Universe as her Shazam! Fury of the Gods character Anthea. Shazam! Fury of the Gods picks up a few years after the Shazamily defeated Dr. Sivana. Although they have continued to fight crime, their success rate is less than ideal. But when a new threat appears, the Daughter of Atlas, the Shazamily will need to work together to save the world.

Zegler plays Anthea, the youngest of the three Daughters of Atlas, who forms a bond with Freddie. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Zegler expresses an interest in reprising her role as Anthea, one of the Daughters of Atlas, in the future. She discusses the possibility of exploring the origins of the Daughters of Atlas’ mythology in a prequel.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

We’re not sure what’s going to happen in the future of the DCU, but there is a show coming out called Paradise Lost, which hopefully touches on the Greek mythology of the DC Universe. Would you guys like your characters to be somehow a part of that show at all?

Rachel Zegler: I would love to just come back in any capacity. It’d be fun. We got to wear such cool costumes and feel really cool all the time. I would just love to come back in any capacity. But if it’s exploring the origins of our mythology, I think that’s really interesting, but whatever Peter Safran says. Whatever Dad tells us to do.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods introduced three original characters, with the Daughters of Atlas exploring the origins of Shazam’s powers and how it impacted the realm of the Gods. The Daughters of Atlas are tied to DC’s Greek pantheon, which is an especially prominent corner, especially for one of DC’s most powerful heroines. The Daughters of Atlas could perfectly tie into Wonder Woman’s story, especially after they interacted with humanity.

Wonder Woman’s future in the DC Universe is unclear; however, she will likely have an important place given the Wonder Woman prequel series Paradise Lost that James Gunn announced. Set centuries before her birth, Paradise Lost will be a Game of Thrones-style series that takes place on Themyscira. This could tie into not only the politics of the island but the Gods as well, which could be the perfect way to further explore not only Wonder Woman’s origins but the Daughters of Atlas as well.

Shazam’s future in the DC Universe is uncertain, especially after Shazam! Fury of the Gods had a disappointing opening weekend, but these characters still have a lot of stories to potentially tell. Anthea could fit perfectly into the future of the DC Universe, either in Paradise Lost or in a project set after Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Gunn has titled Chapter One of the DC Universe “Gods and Monsters,” and with Anthea being a Goddess walking among humanity by the end of the movie, she could be a key player moving forward.

Eighteen years have passed since Resident Evil 4’s January 11, 2005 launch that changed the world of gaming forever, but in 2023, the acclaimed title is back, courtesy of Capcom’s remake of the survival horror classic, set to launch for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on March 24, 2023. However, with a week left until its release, the Resident Evil 4 Remake has officially received critic scores for each of its platforms on the review aggregator website, Metacritic. So, how does the remade version of Resident Evil 4 compare to the original that is hailed among the greatest games ever made? Read ahead to find out, as we take a look at Resident Evil 4’s Metacritic Score and see where the upcoming game rates in the history of the franchise.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Metascores

As of this writing, the Resident Evil 4 Remake has officially earned the following Metacritic scores: 92 on PC, 93 on PlayStation 5, and 91 on Xbox Series X|S. The game does not currently have a Metascore on PS4. In other words, just like the original game it is based on, the Resident Evil 4 Remake has achieved undeniable critical acclaim, earning Metacritic’s “Must Play” designations on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the honor impending on PC. The latest Resident Evil entry has also catapulted its way into the “game of the year” conversation, as it currently ranks as the third-highest rated videogame of 2023 on Metacritic, only trailing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s next-gen remaster on Xbox Series X|S, as well as Metroid Prime Remastered on Nintendo Switch. As the two aforementioned games are remasters, there is a strong case to be made that Resident Evil 4 is the current front-runner for “game of the year” accolades, at least at the moment.

Resident Evil 4 Remake in Metacritic History

Based on the game’s current Metacritic Scores, the Resident Evil 4 Remake is the 46th greatest game in the history of PC, while rating 5th all-time on PS5, and placing 7th among the catalog of the Xbox Series X|S. According to its critic scores, Resident Evil 4 is far and away the best horror experience available in the current generation of gaming, surpassing 2023’s Dead Space Remake.

Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Ranking in the Resident Evil Franchise

Using peak Metacritic scores, the Resident Evil 4 Remake’s 93 on PS5 would place the game in a statistical tie with 2019’s Resident Evil 2 Remake on Xbox One for the third greatest title in Resident Evil history, only trailing Resident Evil Code: Veronica (94 on Dreamcast) and the original Resident Evil 4 (96 on GameCube and PS2).

How I Met Your Father
Photo: Hulu

In a move that’s vaguely reminiscent of when Netflix’s One Day At A Time reboot moved to Pop TV, Hulu’s How I Met Your Father—which is also a reboot of an existing sitcom, though How I Met Your Mother is a lot more recent than the original One Day At A Time was—is going to start airing on Freeform. A more appropriate comparison might be the time TNT, TBS, and TruTV aired episodes of Titans and The Flight Attendant as a plug for HBO Max, though that was at least partially a “we’re desperate for things to put on TV during COVID move.” Either way, How I Met Your Father will soon be airing on Freeform, which is a regular TV network! It comes from a TV cable and not an internet cable like Hulu does! TV is an older kind of technology, as opposed to a newer kind of technology like internet streaming!

Variety says HIMYF will premiere on Freeform on April 25 with the first two episodes of season one, and it will continue to air two episodes every week on Tuesdays until it has run through the whole first season. While a good way to pad out a linear TV schedule, this mostly seems like a major vote of confidence for How I Met Your Father… which has already received at least one other major vote of confidence in the past. Last year, about a month after premiering, Hulu renewed the series for a 20-episode second season, which is a pretty huge number considering how short seasons tend to be for streaming shows. Hell, the first season of this show was only 10 episodes. Basically, Hulu loves HIMYF so much that it’s going to spend a decade telling it’s future kids about how they met.

The series, which stars Hilary Duff, Christopher Lowell, and Kim Cattrall, will continue to air new episodes on Hulu—naturally, since that’s kind of key to the whole “Hulu loves this thing” argument.

Elden Ring’s rich lore is supported by a massive cast of characters with highly detailed backstories. Knowing the backstory of the game’s major, and sometimes more minor, characters helps the player piece together the ambiguity of the story world FromSoftware has created with The Lands Between. The motivations and history of Elden Ring’s cast give depth to the lengthy timeline and events that shaped the world the player Tarnished fights through.

The story of Elden Ring is teased out between the many dozens of characters represented in the game. Some characters, like Melina, have little to no accompanying story, which shrouds them in mysteries that hopefully will be explored in the recently announced Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree. However, several main characters have backstories that are just too vital to ignore, while some minor characters have truly memorable stories packed with just as much awe and grandeur as the major players in The Lands Between. Below is a list of ten Elden Ring characters with the best backstories.

10 Cleanrot Knight Finlay Is Elden Ring’s Coolest Spirit Ash

Malenia, Blade of Miquella, was one of the most formidable shard bearers to participate in Elden Ring’s brutal war known as the Shattering. She led a group of knights known as Clean Rot Knights, who fought just as fiercely as Malenia herself. These knights were so devoted to the demigod that they fought loyally alongside the Blade of Miquella despite their inevitable decay and death from being so near one cursed with Elden Ring’s Scarlet Rot. Finlay was perhaps one of the most impressive Clean Rot Knights. She survived Malenia and Radahn’s fight in Caelid and managed to carry the wounded Malenia back to Haligtree by herself.

9 Morgott, The Omen King, Was Devoted To The Golden Order

Elden Ring Shattering Timeline Battles Events Radahn vs Margit Morgott

Morgott and his brother Mohg were born of Queen Marika and Godfrey, the so-called Golden Lineage. However, Morgott and Mohg were born with cursed Omen blood, which gave them wild horns and extra appendages like tails and wings. The Golden Order reviled the Omen Curse, so despite their royal birth, the Omen children were forced to live hidden in the sewers below Leyndell, rather than harboring a grudge though, Morgott remained loyal to the Golden Order. When the Shattering began, he remained in the capital and defended the Erdtree and the throne from all contenders, taking the mantle of Omen King. He even fought, via a magic projection, under the alias Margit, The Fell Omen, Elden Ring’s first boss.

8 Godrick The Grafted Is Elden Ring’s Most Pathetic Shardbearer

Elden Ring Boss Godrick The Grafted

Godrick the Grafted is Elden Ring’s creepiest and most pathetic demigod. He stems from the Golden Lineage of Marika and Godfrey but is so far separated from them that his power is practically nonexistent. He managed to claim a Great Rune during the Shattering but suffered many defeats and was kicked out of Leyndell, hiding among the small folk in order to escape. He even had the audacity to challenge Malenia but was quickly put in his place. Embarrassed by his shortcomings, he turned to the reviled practice of grafting to compensate.

7 Sellen, The Graven Witch, Studied Forbidden Sorceries

Sorceress Sellen in Elden Ring

Sellen is one of Elden Ring’s more peculiar, albeit nefarious, side characters. When the player finds her in-game, she still bears the robes of Elden Ring’s Raya Lucaria Academy, where she studied Glintstone magic and became one of the most influential and controversial figures in the institution’s history. Under the masters Lusat and Azur, she became so powerful that she earned a portrait on the walls of the Academy along with a Glintstone Crown fashioned after her likeness. She was later expelled from the Academy, however, for seeking to re-engage in the study of the sacred and forbidden Primeval Current, which earned her the title of Graven Witch.

6 Miquella, The Unalloyed, Opposed The Golden Order

Artwork of Miquella in Elden Ring's opening cutscene, identified by his golden hair standing next to Mohg.

The union of Marika and Radagon spawned two children who were prodigies, the twins Malenia and Miquella. Unfortunately, despite their talents, the twins were cursed with terrible afflictions: Malenia, with the Scarlet Rot, and Miquella, with eternal youth. Under the order of the Erdtree, not even the Greater Will, Elden Ring’s outer god, could cure the twins. Enraged and disillusioned with the Golden Order, Miquella stepped out on his own to form a new order that was more welcoming to all the Erdtree spurned. This led him to grow the Haligtree and begin a desperate quest to cure himself and his sister.

5 Rennala, Queen Of The Full Moon, Fought Against The Erdtree

Elden Ring Queen Rennala's amber egg

Rennala belonged to a line of astrologers that studied the stars and their movements. She discovered the full moon and its powers and quickly became adept in all manner of lunar magic. Rennala’s skills impressed those at the Academy of Raya Lucaria so much that she was made its master. She led the knights of the Carian family against the forces of the Erdtree in many battles in the years before the Shattering. Eventually, she agreed to make peace after Radagon of Elden Ring’s Golden Order repented in the Church of Vows, and the two married.

Rennala and Radagon lived happily for a time, raising three children who would grow up to be mighty demigods. Things took a turn, however, when Radagon surprisingly left Rennala to marry Queen Marika. Rennala was heartbroken and sank into a deep depression. The other leaders of the Academy took this chance to cast her aside, locking her in the Grand Library, where she was left to cradle the amber egg Radagon gifted her.

4 Queen Marika, The Eternal, Is The Vessel For The Greater Will

Elden Ring's Queen Marika the Eternal, with her arms outstretched in the manner of someone being crucified.

Marika is the queen of The Lands Between and a vessel of the outer god known as the Greater Will. In the name of this deity and her burgeoning Golden Order, Marika waged war against all manner of enemies, such as the giants in the mountaintops north of the Erdtree and the Carian Royals of Elden Ring’s Liurnia of the Lakes. Marika cast aside her husband Godfrey when all the Erdtree’s enemies had been conquered. She then took Radagon as her husband, harboring the secret that Radagon and herself are one and the same.

3 Roundtable Knight Vyke Almost Became Elden Lord

The logo for Elden Ring, with an armored figure kneeling in front of the titular Elden Ring itself

Roundtable Knight Vyke, the character on Elden Ring’s cover art, is one of the most powerful Tarnished to walk The Lands Between. Vyke was one of the early Tarnished to answer the call of Grace and join the Roundtable Hold in seeking to become Elden Lord. He was so formidable that he managed to gather two Great Runes, more than any Tarnished had acquired by that point. Vyke’s success took a turn, however, when he discovered that his Finger Maiden would have to be sacrificed in order to take the throne. So he sought out the Three Fingers and the Frenzied Flame, Elden Ring’s worst ending, which led to his imprisonment in the Contender’s Evergaol.

2 Ranni, The Witch, Is The Cause Of Elden Ring’s Major Events

Image of the blue porcelain Snow Witch doll inhabited by the Empyrean Ranni in Elden Ring.

Lunar Princess Ranni was one of the children born of Queen Rennala and Radagon. She formed a deep bond with her mother, who showed her the wonders of the full moon and even helped her find her own dark moon. Eventually, the Two Fingers dubbed Ranni an Empyrean, a candidate to replace Queen Marika, but Ranni shunned the idea of being forced into servitude to the Greater Will, so she devised a scheme to rid herself of this burden and bring about a new age for The Lands Between.

She was the mastermind behind the infamous Night of the Black Knives, which resulted in the death of Godwyn the Golden, Marika’s beloved son. Ranni also died on this night, but her soul lived on and it can be argued that, without Ranni’s intervention, the events of Elden Ring’s main story would never have come to pass. Perhaps Ranni had more influence over The Lands Between than Queen Marika and the Greater Will.

1 General Radahn, Conqueror Of The Stars, Has An Endearing Backstory

Elden Ring's General Radahn, standing in his full, red-maned armor with this arms crossed.

General Radahn was another child of Queen Rennala and Radagon. Radahn studied gravity magic in the sorcery town of Sellia when he was young, so he could still ride his beloved scrawny horse despite his massive size. He became so powerful that he arrested the flow of constellations, earning him the title of Starscourge. This act was seemingly done to prevent his sister Ranni from enacting her plans to eliminate the Golden Order, which Radahn admired greatly.

He was also the mightiest of all the demigods to fight in Elden Ring’s brutal Shattering war. He proved to be a match for the undefeated Malenia, who unleashed the Scarlet Rot on him, leaving him broken and crazed. Since that day, he has been wandering the Caelid battlefield and keeping the stars at bay.

Elden Ring’s character backstories are woven together so finely, often with significant intersections with other characters. This tapestry of plot and character motivations demonstrates FromSoftware’s skill in crafting intricate stories. Moreover, it proves that Elden Ring is a true masterpiece worthy of its GOTY win at the Video Game Awards 2022.

On his previous record for Hyperdub, 2021’s Siren Spine Sysex, the Scottish producer darted between the elastic bubblegum bass of SOPHIE and the glassy, highly-textured post-club music of artists like Koreless, Barker, and Ulla. He continues in this direction on his new song, “Pic of U,” a bubbly cyber-lullaby that expresses digital longing over a bed of fluttering, delicate synths, sighs of pleasure, and chiming notification sounds. “Are there any more pics of you?” a chorus of modulated voices ask coyly, excitedly, as if sliding into your DMs. Half beat-forward club tune, half cool-headed ambient-pop, it’s tantalizing as a well-executed afternoon sext from your crush.

Basically, Lo to No Budget Filmmaking didn’t exist when I started Raindance in 1992. Everyone was shooting on 35mm. You had to. The video cameras at the time were expensive and bulky to use. Shooting on film also meant costly lab expenses. Film editing on a Steenbeck or Movieola and time consuming. To make a movie you pretty much needed a million dollars or pounds. And you had to go to film school in order to figure it all out.

Now of course the low cost of high resolution cameras and easy-to-use editing equipment has meant that budgetary constraints have dropped to near nothing. But what are the main reasons people shoot on a low or near-no budget.

1. Making Your Film Is Your Film School

Trial and error is the real way to learn filmmaking. so grab a few mates and mess around with low cost equipment. Make your mistakes and more importantly develop the experience it takes to learn from your mistakes.

2. It’s Easier To Show A Profit

It is common sense that a million is a lot harder to get than a hundred thou. And a hundred thou is a lot harder to get than ten thou. And the lower the budget the less money you need to pay off your investors and turn a profit. And never mind that for every tenner in the cinema box office, half will go to the actual cinema, another 30% to the distributor plus the cost of advertising, meaning you need about $8 for each dollar returned to you, the filmmaker.

The trick of course, is to learn how to make money from your film. And the easiest way is to suck up the pain while you are making your film. Use deferrals and call in every single favour you can.

3. The Budget Ladder

Want to get 20 mil to make a film? Here’s how everybody does it: They get 2 mil and make a movie that makes money.

Want 2 mil? Here’s how everybody does it: Make a movie for a couple of hundred thou that makes money and you get a couple mil.

And so on. Cobble  the amount of money you know you can get together on your own without annoying your landlord or your diet. Then make a movie that gets noticed and makes some money and you will get a couple hundred thou.

Remember the movie industy’s golden rule: first you make a movie and then you make deals to make movies.

4, Lo Budget Movies Don’t Need Stars

Everyone knows that if you have Benedict Cumberbach in your movie you are going to mint it big time. But the types of movies that don’t need stars are the ones that you can make cheaply. These are horror and sci-fi. These movies would kind of be ruined by a Cumberbach or Clooney going ‘Aaaargh!’

What makes horror and sci-fi sell? Basically, it’s the concept. And in these two genres not only don’t you need stars, you can’t really use them.

5. There’s Nothing Difficult about Making Movies

The film industry delights and over complicating things in order to mystify the entire process and to keep newcomers out.
Don’t let anyone tell you that filmmaking is difficult. it isn’t. it’s just plain old-fashioned hard work.

Which is what I go through in easy-to-understand steps in my Lo To No Budget Filmmaking Weekend Masterclass.

Finally, do you want to make a movie? Will I see you there? It’s an information intensive weekend that can launch your filmmaking career.

A RUSSIAN fighter jet has intercepted US nuclear bombers just days after an American drone was dramatically brought down.

Footage taken from the Su-35 shows it flying beside one of two massive B-52s as they approached Russian airspace, in the first encounter between the sides since the drone clash.

Before the B-52s were intercepted, a photo shows them being escorted by Polish F-16 jets over Baltic Sea.

It comes after Russian fighter jets dumped fuel on a US Reaper drone before crashing into above the Black Sea.

Russia’s defence ministry said its radar detected two targets which were identified as US Air Force B-52H bombers, the state-owned TASS news agency reported.

It said a Su-35 fighter jet took to the air in order to prevent a border violation.

After that “the foreign military aircraft moved away from the Russian Federation state border, the Russian fighter returned to its base airfield.”

The ministry said the Su-35’s flight was strictly in line with international rules of the use of airspace during Monday’s incident.

“No violation of the state border of the Russian Federation was permitted,” it said.

During last week’s clash a Russian Su-27 jet struck the propeller of the MQ-9 Reaper drone – forcing it to crash into the sea.

The drone was taken down while flying near Russian-occupied Crimea and the Ukraine frontline on Tuesday.

Prior to the collision, which happened at 7am local time, two Su-27s had “dumped fuel on and flew in front of the MQ-9” in a “reckless” and “unprofessional” manner, the US military said.

Footage of the moment has now been released by the US European Command.

It shows one of the Russian fighter jets zooming towards the drone before flying above it – dumping fuel on it.

Horrified US military personnel in Germany watched a live feed from the drone as the Russian jets repeatedly flew around it, dumping fuel to damage cameras and sensors.

Senior US officials have been worried for months that some sort of incident over the Black Sea could lead to miscommunication and confrontation.

The Russians reportedly said they have now won the race to retrieve the drone from the 3,000ft under the Black Sea.

The bringing down of an American reaper drone is part of Russia’s increasingly dangerous pattern of behaviour that experts fear could spark a wider conflict.

US researchers the RAND Corporation have compiled a report detailing hundreds of such incidents in recent years which they describe as “coercive signalling”.

This is designed to send a message to the US and other NATO planes and ships through “unsafe and unprofessional” conduct – with Russian aircraft increasingly armed.

The show, which is commissioned by Iceland’s RUV and four Nordic networks, stars Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) as Benedikt Ríkharðsson, the Icelandic Prime Minister whose medical condition threatens the stability of the government and the private lives of the team around him. After the dramatic finale of Season 1, in which he publicly reveals his bipolar disorder to the entire nation, Benedikt is back and this time he wants to change the country’s approach to mental health. Anita Briem (Salt and Fire) reprises her role in Season 2 as Steinunn, the woman behind husband Benedikt’s success and his political career. Cineflix Rights struck the deal with Viaplay for Season 2, having sold Season 1 across Europe and APAC.

‘Yop’: Swedish Producer David Jassy’s Story Made Into Limited Series

The true story of Swedish artist and music producer David Jassy, who was given a life sentence for second degree murder and spent the subsequent years struggling to survive in LA County Jail, is to be retold in a limited series from Nordic drama indie Nevis Productions. At 34, Jassy got in an altercation with a person at a crosswalk in LA, resulting in the death of the man and Jassy heading to jail. The project is being developed in collaboration with Jassy and is set to a hip-hop soundtrack. The eight-parter is being unveiled at this week’s Series Mania in Lille. “I want people to be inspired by my story,” said Jassy. “No matter how dark it gets, you can pull through and work through the hard times with positive thinking.”

(This story contains spoilers from “9-11” Season 6, Episode 12, titled “Recovery”).

“9-1-1” found resolution to a major Season 6 cliffhanger in Monday’s all new episode, giving Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash a heroic showcase as he avenged the death of his sponsor.

In a storyline ripped from the headlines, Bobby and Athena (Angela Bassett) followed up on their investigation on a corrupt rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles, where they suspected foul play had led to the death of Bobby’s longtime sponsor and friend Wendell (Maurice J. Irvin). The episode followed as Bobby revisited key moments from his past with Wendell, while he worked on seeking justice for his friend’s death in the present day.

After connecting with a patient who had been involved with Wendell’s death, Bobby finds out that Wendell was helping her put a bug inside the facility to uncover the director’s malpractices. As they suspected in earlier episodes, the facility was secretly keeping their patients on drugs to extend their dependence on their program. When Bobby confronts the facility’s directors on their crimes, he finds himself fighting for his life after they set their house on fire with Bobby and his new friend inside. Viewers watched as Bobby escaped and saved the life of the patient who’d been helping him, all without his firefighting gear or his team to back him up.

“That was really interesting to take that all away from him.We felt those fire scenes, we were just gelled up enough to protect our skin and things like that, but I did not have the added protection, the incredible protection that fire gear provides for you,” Krause told TheWrap of filming the action sequence.

“For the viewers, I think that you know, we’ve come to kind of raise the bar for a television series action, you know, it’s not your typical procedural for sure, which is fun,” he added. “I’ve become used to putting myself in dangerous situations for the show.”

In flashbacks, it was revealed that the patient and Wendell were caught sneaking around in the director’s office and she forced Wendell to take drugs to keep his cover intact. He died after he tragically overdosed on the drugs, and the facility took him elsewhere and covered up his death as an accident.

The big action sequence ended with a big twist, as the facility’s directors attempted to frame Bobby for starting the fire and he was arrested. Luckily, Bobby’s patient friend woke up just in time to share the truth of what had happened in the house with Athena. The investigation concluded with the facility’s directors getting arrested and justice being served. Viewers also got to see Bobby take a big leap forward personally, as the episode ended with him hoping to help a new person to kickstart their own journey of sobriety.

For Krause, the opportunity of headlining an action-packed, Bobby-centric episode is always fun, but the personal side of the episode was the biggest draw.

“For me as the character it was cathartic to get to a place where Bobby feels like he can pass on this sort of self forgiveness, self love that Wendell imparted to him,” Krause said. “We all need these positive relationships in our life. But Bobby, you know, without the 118 and without the team and the family I think would really be lost. So these relationships and having their love, I think really helps him.”

Krause also celebrated that his big episode this week also had him teaming up with Bassett’s Athena on the case. He said one of his favorite parts of being on the “9-1-1” cast is whenever the show gives Bobby and Athena the chance to work on an investigation together, which he compared to the show’s ode to the ABC classic series “Hart to Hart,” starring Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers.

As for the rest of the season, Krause teased he was feeling sore from work he was filming for the upcoming Season 6 finale. Though he stayed mum on specifics, the actor revealed yet another big catastrophe will fall on Los Angeles for the firefighters and crew to help with before the show ends for the season.

“It truly is like a comic book that first responders brought to life, you know, the damage that’s been done to each of these characters over time, and they keep bouncing back. I love that that’s a part of the language of the show, Krause said. “It’s almost like a Roadrunner cartoon where we’re all Wile E. Coyote, getting beat the crap and we bounce back.”

“9-1-1” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

In a pair of lawsuits, one filed in New York and the other in Delaware, Fox News producer Abby Grossberg accused the network of setting her up to take the fall in the ongoing defamation lawsuit filed against it by Dominion Voting Systems.

In the lawsuit, the details of which were reported by the New York Times, Grossberg says she was coached in “a coercive and intimidating manner” by Fox News lawyers prior to giving testimony last September in the Dominion case. The network’s goal, she said, was to to position her and Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, who Grossberg worked for at the time, to take the blame for airing false conspiracy theories alleging Dominion somehow rigged the 2020 election.

And in what is now a familiar turn of events for lawsuits involving the news channel, Grossberg also said she personally witnessed multiple instances of sexist and antisemitic behavior by other Fox News employees.

Fox News for its part filed a countersuit on Monday that seeks to enjoin her from discussing what it says are discussions protected by attorney-client privilege. Grossberg, according to the New York Times, has also been forcibly placed on administrative leave after filing her lawsuits.

Grossberg worked for Bartiromo’s show in 2020 during the election and into 2021; in 2022 she became the senior booker for Tucker Carlson tonight. Grossberg says the network understaffed Bartiromo’s show and claims this made it impossible to vet false claims of election fraud that were frequently featured on that show.

Last September, as the New York Times notes, Grossberg said during her testimony in the Dominion trial that she didn’t care if claims she show aired were true or false, “because we didn’t know if they were true or false at that time.” She also said she felt no obligation to correct false claims later. Grossberg now says she responded this way because she’d been “coached by and intimidated” by Fox lawyers, and urged to downplay the role of male company executive, which she says was part of a pattern of sexism at the network.

Grossberg alleges that she witnessed Fox News executives call Bartiromo a “crazy bitch” and “menopausal.” After she moved over to Tucker Carlson’s show, she says she immediately witnessed sexist jokes and was asked about Bartiromo’s sex life. She says also that Carlson’s staff frequently made sexist and antisemitic jokes.

In a statement provided to TheWrap, Fox News said it “engaged an independent outside counsel to immediately investigate the concerns raised by Ms. Grossberg, which were made following a critical performance review. We will vigorously defend these claims.”

Regarding its counter-suit, Fox News also said, “Ms. Grossberg has threatened to disclose Fox’s attorney-client privileged information and we filed a temporary restraining order to protect our rights.”

Feedly already digests and presents updates from the sources you value. But to really stay ahead of the curve, it pays to search beyond the publishers you already follow – to the blogs, articles, reports, and debates that are turning heads, but almost buried among the noise online.

That’s why we’ve given Feedly the ability to look further with Power Search across the web. It drills down into the specific information you want to find beyond your existing feeds and sources.

In this way, you can learn something new, discover new sources for future reference and easily share reputable insights with your colleagues and social network. It intersects the exact content you’re looking for with super-specific topics and publications.

Here’s what Power Search across the Web does, and how to use it.

Introducing Power Search across the web

Search is a relevance game. It’s easy to lose time in the wormhole of search engines. Meanwhile, the low hit rate of typical news aggregators and alert features can leave you pulling hairs out.

Feedly gets around this with a carefully vetted database of more than 40 million trusted web sources. Collectively, they publish 110 million articles, journals, and videos. on a daily basis.

But that’s still a crazy amount of info and analysis. So we help you refine this down with buckets – categories of publications that make a search super granular.

You can think of each bucket as a list of trusted publications that focus on a specific industry, function or topic. They tell the search exactly what to filter. You get hyper-relevant content that can be saved to a Feedly board and shared with your team or out into the wider world. Six popular buckets are surfaced automatically yet other, more narrow buckets can be chosen – we’ll show you how to do this later in our guide.

Discover what trade publications are saying about a company. Track topics on strategy sources. Bring up the conversation around a product in business magazines. The knowledge is yours to shape and tinker with.

How it works

Okay, let’s imagine you’re part of the Innovation Hub at Aéroports de Paris. You’re looking for ground-breaking stories and reports about the airline industry.

First, click on the search icon to open Power Search, select the new Across the Web tab, and search for the airlines topic.

Go to Power Search across the Web and search for airlines

You get instant access to highly relevant articles from expert and trusted sources.

Search across the web for the topic airlines

You can also search for companies, people, products, or other keywords you are interested in.

Narrow to specific publications

The initial search is performed against a set of default buckets: strategy magazines, trade publications, business magazines, and tech blogs.

But you can narrow your search to a specific slice of the web. Click on +SOURCES and lookup energy for example. This is a powerful way to find articles about airlines across a broad set of energy publications.

Search for the topic airlines in energy publications

Refine your query with Leo topics and business events

You can refine your query by adding additional parameters (topics or business events) using the +AND operator.

For example, you can easily search for product launches related to the airline industry by combining the airlines smart topic and the product launch business event

Create more advanced queries with AND, OR, and Leo topics and events

Cut through the noise with Exclude

Okay, now let’s remove some results you 100% don’t want to find. For instance, any mention of COVID-19…

The Exclude feature allows you to filter out specific topics or keywords from the search results. Click on Exclude > +Topic and enter COVID-19.

Use the exclude feature to filter out the noise

Advanced mode

If you are a power user, you can use the Title Only knob to let Feedly know if you want to search only in the title of articles or the entire content.

The where on the web feature also includes a funnel button gives you more control over which publications should be included in the buckets. Pick leading publications if you are searching for a popular term and pick all publications if you are searching for a niche topic and you want your search to be as broad as possible.

Make your Feedly better

Once you’ve discovered a great new article, you can click on the source name and see the other articles that the source has published. This is a powerful way to find new sources for niche topics.

If the content is highly relevant, you can use the +FOLLOW button to add that new source to one of your Feedly feeds and receive the next articles published by that source.

A new DCU looms on the horizon, but there are still many details we don’t know about the franchise’s past canon, according to David Ayer. The director of the 2016 version of Suicide Squad is still revealing information about his cut of the film, one that fans continue to ask to see as it would be very different from what finally made it to theaters.

The film, like James Gunn’s 2021 movie, focused on a group of villains or anti-heroes brought together by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to fulfill a dangerous mission, which threatened to end their lives. This was the introduction of who became one of the most iconic characters in the saga, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. As well as Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, both who would return alongside Davis for Gunn’s film.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The 2016 production, as well as the 2017 version of Justice League, underwent modifications when it was released on the screen. In the case of the movie that brought together the most famous superhero team, the director’s vision came to light in 2021 thanks to HBO Max. There is still no news about Ayer’s cut, but there are several details revealed by the director, such as its connection to Snyder’s film.

Through Twitter, David revealed that the original script for his movie was directly connected to Justice League:

The script issue was having Steppenwolfe and the Parademons stripped out prior to production. Enchantress was under the control of a mother box and opening a Portal to Apokalypse. This was all cut early in prep. That was a hard loss.

The New Justice League

Now, thanks to the creation of DC Studios under the command of James Gunn and Peter Safran, Warner Bros. Discovery seeks that, finally, the entire DC universe achieves unity and continuity. The division will be in charge of all projects related to the brand, whether they are movies, series, video games or animated productions.

As for the Justice League, Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Green Lantern will be the first members of the group to be introduced, though it will likely take a few years for them to come together as a crime-fighting team. Especially since other major cast members like Wonder Woman aren’t part of the new DCU schedule yet.

So, the first films and tv series that will arrive are probably origin stories that will present these new versions of the beloved characters to the audience, before they can actually team up in a crossover film.

A critically acclaimed Xbox 360 game is now free to donwload to all Xbox Live Gold users. The Xbox 360 generation is widely considered the greatest generation for Xbox. Not only is it the best-selling Xbox console to date, but it has an impressive library of games, which includes an impressive collection of exlcusive games. It was during this generation of gaming that many fan-favorite series got their start. For example, and pertaining to Xbox specifically, Gears of War got its start during this generation. Unfortunately, the new free download is not for any of the classic Gears of War games, but Space Invaders: IG, also known as Space Invaders Infinity Gene.

When released in 2009, Space Invaders Infinity Gene was initially a mobile exclusive. Upon release, it garnered a 91 on Metacritic, making it one of the highest-rated games of its year. A year later it came to both Xbox 360 and PS3. How well the game sold, we don’t know, but if you’ve never played it you can now play it for free via Xbox Live Gold, or at least you can at the moment of publishing. This is a limited time deal, so it’s possible by the time you’re reading this, it will have expired. As for when it will expire, specifically, the game’s listing does not say.

“Space Invaders, the game that defined video games for generations, is back with a new twist,” reads an official blurb about the game. “The game starts off looking like the classic Space Invaders, but as you play through the game, it evolves. Unlock new stages, new power ups, and new features. The full game features a total of 143 stages from both Normal Mode and the breathtaking Challenge Mode where stages change with each playthrough. You can even blast your way through unique stages evolved from your very own music! Compete against other players from all around the world in real time with the appropriately named Real Time Rankings! Space Invaders Infinity Gene is the pinnacle of outer space shooting action! The more you play, the more the game evolves!”

Once claimed, the game is yours to keep and play as much as you want. However, you need an active subscription to access it. If your Xbox Live Gold subscription lapses you will lose access to all games downloaded for free through it until you subscribe back up.

Hunter, Tootega Nahin, Todega, Amazon Mini web series: Give us a break

Don’t blame me for a sense of ennui and déjà vu that is having an extended run over the last few years, both on the big screen and on OTT. The number of films that have our armed forces and secret services battling that of our neighbour is falling from all sides, like snowfall. But by and large, what we are served is ‘been there done that’. Lagging not far behind is the genre of bad cop battling organised crime single-handedly, which is assuming the proportions of a torrent. Of course, there are minor variants in the screenplay and the fights are conceived and choreographed differently. This one is an Amazon Mini TV web series, produced by Saregama’s Yoodlee Films, about bad cop ‘Hunter’, and the tag line says, ‘Tootega Nahi, Todega’, which, translated from its Hindustani, means, ‘will not break, will break’. It is free to watch on the Amazon Shopping App. Be that as it may, what we need is a break.

Relatively forgotten, Suniel ‘Anna’ Shetty makes a comeback of sorts at 61, playing a middle-aged, drug-addicted cop, and there is Esha Deol, who sizzled many moons ago in Dhoom, playing an investigative journalist, adding to the star value. In the support, we have one well-known name, Rahul Dev, acting as the bad, bad cop (against Shetty’s good, bad cop), who is 54. And the ‘ace up their sleeves’ is Jackie Shroff. Not a big deal, you might say, in spite of the niche following that Shetty and Shroff command. Which sort of explains the series’ choice of streaming platform. The following assessment is based on an 80-minute compilation showed to the media on 20 March 2023 at the PVR multiplex, Juhu, Mumbai. Many members of the cast were present, as was the representative of Amazon Prime Mini. The writer(s) and director(s) were not mentioned once nor were they introduced. Suniel Shetty spoke, said how well he was treated and made to feel like a star. Jackie got into his familiar ‘Bhidu’ act. Hunter starts streaming tomorrow.

In Mumbai’s underworld, a local don Imran catches a woman trying to steal his ‘stuff’, and kills her. He also takes her sister captive and hangs her upside down in his den. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hooda gets on his trail. Another ACP, down-an-out, drug-addict, living on pain killers, Vikram Sinha, who is dealing with Imran, learns about it. Hooda challenges him not to interfere and let him dispense his form of justice, which is annihilation. But before Hooda can reach Imran, Vikram investigates the crime, reaches Imran’s den and eliminates all his henchmen, including Imran himself. Hooda reached just afterwards and is very upset that Vikram has taken away his glory. They exchange words.

Vikram is a divorcée, given to drinking and also indulges in casual sex. He sports a long hair wig, which falls across his face. Several layers of crime co-habit in Mumbai, as is to be expected. He decides to go after them. An African drug-lord gives him a few leads, in return for inaction by Vikram. Meanwhile, his ex-wife is targetted and manages to escape in the nick of time. She is also having an affair with a junior cop, which fact he learns only by accident. An investigative journalist Divya gets the whiff of a man who sexually exploits women and then they disappear. Vikram joins hands with her and sets on the trails of this criminal. It turns out that he is a much bigger operator than they had thought, and is being protected by some higher-up in the police. Vikram is captured, drugged unconscious, loaded into the back-seat of a car and the two gangsters who are in the front seat have instructions to snuff him out. Looks like the end of the hunt for Hunter.

All efforts to trace the names of the writer(s) failed, so they remain unsung. But their work offers very little that is new. Tropes like the hospital caper and the killer intruder masquerading as a salesman have been seen once too often. An attempt at comedy, using an over-size nurse, falls flat. It is hard to imagine that Mumbai’s elite police force would retain an ACP who is a drug addict, a boozer and a chaser of women of easy virtue. Secondly, the ability with which he takes on scores of his opponents, and even bounces back after being seriously injured, in a jiffy, is very hard to swallow. Ditto the kidnapping of a child by the crime lord and bargaining with her life for ransom. I wouldn’t say there is an overdose of expletives, but there are enough to make you wince, if you are not one of those who delights in listening to invectives.

On some reports, the names of the directors have been mentioned as Alok Batra and Prince Dhiman (Ishq Kills, Yeh Hai Aashiqui, Rishta Likhenge Hum Naya). There is some confusion about the name Alok Batra. Saregama has a Director by this name, and there is also a man by this name who was the co-director of Halla Ho. I am going with the latter. It’s time the fighting between the bad guys and the good guy (note the singular) is made to look realistic. There must be 101 other ways of disposing off Vikram than the one chosen, which borders on the farcical. Why does Vikram’s ex-wife have to hide a gun in such a way that it would take several minutes to retrieve it? What use is a gun out of reach? Divya’s escape trick in the wake of certain death has some novelty. Also, the way it is discovered that his ex-wife is having an affair is terribly crude, yet imaginative. What is unimaginative is the repeated use of catalogue music from Saregama’s old films as background music. These song snippets only distract, almost having a comedic effect, from the proceedings, although many of the songs themselves were chart-toppers in time.

There is little point in analysing performances in any bang-bang venture, but it must be said that Suniel Shetty does surprise you off and on. Esha Deol is confident and vulnerable as Divya. We were shown one scene of Jackie, and it would be unfair to pass comment based on that. Rahul Dev enjoys playing Hooda. Barkha Bisht, I guess, is Vikram’s ex-wife, and she is into character. Mir Sarwar plays a ferocious Imran. Teena Singh plays the hooker at the bar. Also in the cast are Smita Jaykar, Karanvir Sharma, Mihir Ahuja, Siddharth Kher and Pawan Chopra.

There is a lot of bang for the buck. But the term, I guess, is passé. On demand, an entire soundtrack can be filled with bangs. We need style. We need innovation. We need to see stuff on the next plane. We need intellectual challenges, not spoon-feeding.
