It’s not that Lucky Louie is a bad movie — in fact, it is cleverly edited, includes a strong helping of detective fiction, and has a good heart. But as a story, it is so milquetoast, so overwhelmingly sappy, that watching it is like drinking syrup. Despite all the good that father and daughter co-writer/co-directors Daniel and Grace Roebuck bring to the table, the film is watered-down to an unbearable degree. Indeed, this is not a bad movie, but it commits the worst possible crime for a whodunit: it’s boring.

The film follows aged police detective Wilbert Moser (Basil Hoffman), who, many years after his retirement, still dreams about the one robbery he could not solve. When a young criminology student (Madelyn Dundon) approaches him for insight on the very same robbery, Moser and his weekly Bible study group — all of whom are ex-convicts — decide to help solve the case once and for all. Who committed the theft, and why did it take so long to catch them?

Fundamentally, Lucky Louie aims to be a feel-good comedy. To that effect, the movie does quite well. The acting from the entire cast is convincing. Plus, there are several moments of wit and even the heist-esque nature of the mystery is well conceived. But as a “faith-based” feature, this runs afoul of the same wall that inhibits most Christian movies: it sanitizes anything even approximating impurity, including narrative stakes.

“…Moser and his weekly Bible study group…decide to help solve the case…”

It is a strange phenomenon that religious cinema seems to, as a duty, shirk the harsher aspects of day-to-day life. This is odder when considering that even the mildest-mannered comedy includes some danger, a bit of tantalizing frisson, to make it poignant. But the filmmakers seem risk-averse to an extreme, actively avoiding any and all trouble but depleting the production’s potential in the process.

Daniel Roebuck was reportedly influenced by The Andy Griffith Show as a child, which allows for an interesting point of comparison to Lucky Louie. Though spawned in the 1960s and neatly falling into the feel-good comedy category, the beloved sitcom frequently dealt with difficult topics such as class, socioeconomics, and sexuality. What gave the show longevity in the modern zeitgeist is not that it avoided those issues but that it considered them with humor.

Just as the characters in a story need not engage in a gunfight to face hardship, likewise, any narrative doesn’t need to avoid the harsher parts of life to enliven spirits. The film misunderstands this sentiment and, in fact, seems deadset on ensuring nothing whatsoever interrupts the good feelings it tries to establish. However, the result is a comedy that is both drab and uninspiring. Each scene is unnaturally telegraphed to the point of feeling cartoonish; the viewer knows nothing will go wrong at any moment.

All of this is a shame, as there is a lot of technical talent on display. The slightest allowance for obstacles in the narrative would have created a much more captivating experience. As it stands, Lucky Louie is a painfully bland film, but even worse, it is artificially sweetened.

KELOWNA – A wildfire on Knox Mountain in Kelowna, B.C., spurred the evacuation of more than 400 properties Saturday afternoon as emergency crews worked to snuff out the blaze near Okanagan Lake.

However, hours later the evacuation order was downgraded to an alert and the wildfire is now considered as being held.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the blaze is 6.5 hectares in size and human caused.

Jodie Foster, a public information officer with the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre, said two evacuation orders came down for the Magic Estates and Poplar Point areas of Kelowna covering a total of 448 properties due to a wildfire.

Cpl. Judith Bertrand with the Kelowna RCMP said police assisted fire crews with the evacuation to ensure public safety and that winds made the direction of the fire hard to predict.

“The Magic Estates area is quite a dense residential area,” Bertrand said in an interview. “In addition to that, the park is visited by a lot of people that are celebrating Canada Day, visiting, hiking, so we need to make sure that these people are safe.”

Bertand said people had to be evacuated as fire suppression efforts were underway, cautioning those in the area to not to get too close as smoke billowed into the sky above Okanagan Lake.

She said Kelowna deals with the prospect of wildfires every summer and they’re “always in the back of our mind here in the Okanagan region.”

“However, we have to act fast, we have to work in a coordinated effort with our partner agencies to make sure that things unfold as safe and as quickly as possible,” she said.

This year’s wildfire season has been particularly devastating elsewhere in B.C., with more than 9,620 square kilometres burned since April 1, said Pedro Roldan-Delgado, a fire information officer with the Prince George Fire Centre.

Roldan-Delgado said the province has dealt with 214 wildfires since April, putting this year’s wildfire season on track to vastly exceed the area burned last year.

In the 2022 season, he said, there were 247 wildfires that burned just over 590 square kilometres.

He said the fire centre is currently dealing with 68 active wildfires, as lightning strikes and dry conditions spark new blazes.

The Ittsi Creek wildfire north of Fort Nelson has shut down part of Highway 77 near the B.C. boundary with the Northwest Territories, and Roldan-Delgado said crews are waiting to see “if that fire will impact the highway more and they will start actioning it if it does.”

Pedro-Delgado said the fire centre is managing the situation as best it can with its limited resources in a season that started months earlier than normal.

“We have seen quite quite a crazy spring season to have these kind of numbers,” he said. “In our world, things can change so drastically within a few hours that it could go from busy to quiet within like a day or two.”

He said people need to follow all fire bans because “the public can do their part with preventing and reporting wildfires.”

  • Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds is a famous singer-songwriter-producer
  • The Indiana native has 26 number-one R&B hits and has won 12 Grammys
  • He shares three children with two ex-wives

Babyface has no plans of slowing down. The prolific songwriter and music producer, who has won 12 Grammys and worked with music’s biggest stars, recently said he will continue to take the stage any chance that may come his way. “As long as it’s still fun,” he said at Hollywood Unlock’s Image Awards. “It’s what I love to do. I have been doing it for so long, and I feel blessed to still be able to do it.”

The icon (real name: Kenneth Edmonds) started “doing it” in the 1990s when he produced such No. 1 hits as Whitney Houston‘s “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” Boyz II Men‘s “End of the Road” and Madonna‘s “Take a Bow.” In addition, the music guru has worked with such artists as Mariah Carey, TLC, Ariana Grande, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars and Beyoncé.

Even his personal life has been filled with a bit of Tinseltown glitz. He met and married his first wife, Tracey Edmunds, after she auditioned for his music video in 1990. After they announced their split in 2005, Babyface would strike up a romance with another Hollywood music video associate, backup dancer, Nicole Pantenburg. They married in 2014 and decided to go their separate ways as well in 2021.

While the marriages may have not proved successful in the long run, Babyface did welcome three adorable children with his two ex-wives. Let’s meet Brandon, Dylan and Peyton, below!

Brandon

Babyface and Tracey were deep in their romance when they welcomed their first child together. Son Brandon arrived in December 1995. The first-time father was so excited about being a pops that he even wrote a song about it aptly called “The Day (That You Gave Me a Son).” ’Twas late December the news came / And I got so excited, I cried all day, yes / And you were such a lovely, precious sight / When I saw our baby in your eyes,” the lyrics read.

In 2006, Babyface opened up about Brandon’s selfless and sparkling personality. “I believe kids are born with certain kinds of personalities,” he told People. “Some are going to be spoiled no matter what you do. And I know that is not Brandon’s vibe.”

More recently, Brandon has been serving as a producer on films and television shows. According to his IMDb page, he was the co-producer of “Games People Play,” and he’s also serving as the co-producer for the upcoming production, “End of the Road.” He does not appear to have an Instagram at this time.

Dylan

Three years after Brandon made a splash in Babyface and Tracey’s lives, Dylan arrived in 1998. It wasn’t until eight years later that the couple decided to divorce.

Dylan also appears to keep his personal life under lock and key, as he does not have a public social media account. However, eagle-eyed fans might have caught glimpses of him alongside his mother, Tracey, and her hubby, Deion Sanders, on their reality show, “Deion’s Family Playbook.”

As per his LinkedIn profile, Dylan has dabbled in the glitz and glamour of the entertainment world. He flexed his skills as a production assistant on the show “Games People Play,” lending his expertise to his father’s Edmonds Productions. And that’s not all! He even took on the role of co-producer for the Netflix flick “End of the Road.”

Peyton

Following his divorce from Tracey, Babyface found love with Nicole, igniting a romance that blossomed in 2007. The couple’s joy multiplied when they welcomed their precious daughter, Peyton, the following year. “Nicole and I couldn’t be happier to have a new baby girl in the family,” Babyface told People at the time of Peyton’s arrival. “And my two sons are thrilled to have a little sister.”

The parents then sealed their commitment in matrimony in May 2014. Alas, after seven years as husband and wife, Babyface and Pantenburg decided to part ways, announcing their separation in July 2021 through a joint statement. “We continue to care and have respect for one another and share eternal love for our daughter and her well-being,” the statement read in part.

The former couple finalized their divorce in February 2023, amicably agreeing to share joint custody of Peyton.

Ice Cube is accusing the National Basketball Association of gatekeeping sponsorship and network deals from his Big3 basketball league.

“What I want [the NBA] to do when I say ‘work with us’ is to stop working against us,” the rapper and businessman said in a Twitter video this week. “Stop doing that bulls—t behind the scenes that we know you doing.”

The Big3 league is a three-on-three basketball league that runs during the offseason of the NBA, and is made up of many retired or fringe NBA players. The league was founded in 2017 by Cube and his longtime business partner Jeff Kwatinetz.

In the video, Cube promised to embark on a “f–k the gatekeepers” podcast tour, in which he would spread the word about the proposed gatekeeping being done by the NBA. Cube didn’t go into specifics about which sponsors or networks the NBA has allegedly been gatekeeping from the up-and-coming league.

Cube’s first stop on his tour was the most listened-to podcast in the world: Spotify’s “The Joe Rogan Experience.”

“We’re not trying to compete in any way shape or form with the NBA,” Cube said of the Big3 league. “We are very complementary. So, I don’t understand why they would do some of the things that’s being done behind the scenes.”

“Encouraging people to not do it?” Rogan asked.

“Encouraging people to not sponsor us, encouraging networks not to play us… We’ve been able to survive but at a certain point it’s just redundant and ridiculous,” Cube continued. “We got to fight back in some way, shape or form.”

Cube may have just announced his podcast tour, but he has been explaining his rift with the NBA for months on the audio medium. In December, Cube went on the “Bootleg Kev Podcast” and detailed why the NBA viewing the Big3 as competition stunts his league’s growth.

“Labeling us competition prevents other NBA owners from investing, and if you even think you want to own an NBA team, you won’t invest [in the Big3] because this would disqualify you… before you bought your NBA team. So it eliminates a lot of potential investors. They also are going to sponsors that they work with and telling them, ‘Don’t work with the Big3.’ So it’s a major issue.”

The Big3 currently airs on CBS. The league touts that its viewership increased 14% year-over-year last year, according to a press release from October.

The NBA didn’t immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

NBC News’ Willie Geist and NBC Sports’ Maria Taylor, recently joined the Variety Studio presented by Canva, at Cannes Lions to discuss the collaboration between their separate divisions for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Geist and Taylor attended the festival to discuss NBCU’s upcoming broadcast and streaming events; the two divulged audiences should look forward to the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” and the continuation of “Sunday Night Football,” in addition to revealing tidbits about the upcoming international multi-sport event.

As sports and news programming stand as focal points of the broadcasting industry, Geist and Taylor revealed how as viewers, as well as anchors, the programming remains a vital part of their everyday lives and facilitating community.

“I watch sports as an escape, and I think that’s why live sports, or sports you can go access on Peacock — I don’t know if this is borne out by research — but I think it’s better than ever and more important than ever as a place where we can go, in our divided political world and everything else,” said Geist. “I think sports, for me anyway, are just such a refuge and a place to go. And there’s no bigger example of that than the Olympics, because it’s not just me watching the Yankees and the Red Sox. It’s the entire world feeling unified and good about itself for a month.”

Taylor added, “I think there’s a reason why Sunday Night Football is the most-watched show in television, people come together. They want to get their friends together in a house, watch a game that they all know and love, watch ‘characters’ — and the team is really the ‘character’ that you’ve grown up with — it’s familiar. I think that’s why sports is such a powerful driving factor.”

Taylor noted how NBCU has transitioned to incorporate sports programming on the company’s streamer, Peacock, because it “drives up subscriptions.” Taylor added, “Because people don’t want to live without it. You can give up a lot of things — but it’s hard to give up ‘NFL Sundays.’”

As audiences can’t seem to part with sports programming, Geist spoke to the rise in news consumption. Acknowledging, much to his dismay, how the U.S.’ continuous political strife has contributed to the rise if viewership. “I’d rather not have it, frankly. I’d rather have the country be in good shape. But I think especially in cable news, where you’re speaking to a specific audience, it either outrages you or makes you happy, whatever’s going on in the news that day. It goes in waves in terms of ratings, but frankly, I’d rather have us be a country that’s healthy than ratings.”

Giest added that although “Morning Joe,” and his role in the political arena dominates his on-air time, he has been able to provide an “escape” within news programming, during “Sunday Today With Willie Geist.” Geist explained, “I think our Sunday show represents, in a similar way to sports, an escape from the week. [Viewers are] like, ‘We get it. Everyone’s divided. Everyone’s fighting. Can we have something else on Sunday morning?’ They sit there with a mug of coffee and their slippers and hopefully get that for an hour.”

Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder and former CEO, is weighing in on the uproar Elon Musk caused on the social platform after setting “view limits” on tweets.

“Running Twitter is hard. I don’t wish that stress upon anyone. I trust that the team is doing their best under the constraints they have, which are immense,” Dorsey tweeted. “It’s easy to critique the decisions from afar…which I’m guilty of…but I know the goal is to see Twitter thrive. It will.”

In a second tweet, he added, “And I do hope they consider building on truly censorship-resistant open protocols like bitcoin and nostr to help ease that burden. Good for all, and critical to preserve the open internet.”

Twitter users woke up to a glitchy platform as Musk set limits on the tweets that users would read daily. Musk said that the limits were put in place “to address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation.”

Users that are “verified” and pay a monthly subscription fee would be allowed to read 6000 posts a day, while “unverified” users would be limited to 600 posts a day and new unverified users to 300 a day. Later on in the day, Musk said that the new limits would be 10k for verified users, 1k for unverified users and 500 for new users.

Musk would also later poke fun at users reaching their “view limit” tweeting out the following: “Oh the irony of hitting view limits due to complaining about view limits.”

Dorsey became a trending topic as Musk set new viewing limits. The former Twitter CEO is on the board for Bluesky Social, a new social networking service that aims to compete with Twitter. It currently is in beta and users can only sign up if they have an invite code.

As many people tweeted out their frustration with Musk’s decisions, many users started looking for alternatives, which included Bluesky.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were spotted respectively in Mumbai on Sunday. (Picture Credits: Viral Bhayani)

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt seem to be having an eventful Sunday afternoon.

Ranbir Kapoor continues to ride the wave of success with Brahmastra Part One: Shiva and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. Hence, his fans are eagerly awaiting his next with Sandeep Reddy Vanga titled Animal that was postponed due to unfinished VFX work later yesterday. But for now, Ranbir Kapoor seems to be having a relaxing time with his wife Alia Bhatt and daughter Raha. Ranbir Kapoor made his first public appearance after the postponement of his film. His wife Alia Bhatt too was spotted enjoying her Sunday with sister Shaheen.

On Sunday, Ranbir Kapoor was captured by the paparazzi at a clinic. In a clip shared by Viral Bhayani, one could see Ranbir getting out of his car and waving briefly at the camera before entering inside the building. The actor wore a grey t-shirt and grey shorts. He paired it with a cap and a face mask because of which we couldn’t see his face properly.

Check out the clip here.

Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt was spotted at a cafe in Bandra and tagging along with her was Shaheen Bhatt for a perfect Sunday outing. One glance at the pictures and Alia looks as radiant as ever in a brown co-ord set. She was all smiles for the camera before entering the cafe premises with her sister. Alia paired her look with a matching bag and black footwear. Here are the pictures:

The audience is getting ready to see a whole new side of Ranbir Kapoor in his upcoming film Animal. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga of Kabir Singh fame, Ranbir stars alongside Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol in the film. With his rugged and beefed-up look, Ranbir is set to take on a challenging role. The actor has also been sporting a thick beard, integral to the character’s look.

If sources close to the entertainment portal Bollywood Hungama were to be believed, Animal that was supposed to release in August this year will now be releasing in December owing to some embellishment in the VFX department. The source told the portal, “Animal is among the most ambitious films produced by Bhushan Kumar and Murad Khetani, and they are standing by the director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, as he needs more time to give a world-class product. Sandeep is a perfectionist and wants to release an uncompromised product on the VFX front. The teams were working day and night to complete the film, but the action scenes are so grand that it is not possible to have their best version ready for August 11. After seeing the vision for Sandeep, and the output that would have been ready by August 11, the producers along with Ranbir Kapoor took a collective call to delay the film to December.”

Animal is a film of many firsts. It marks the first collaboration between Ranbir and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Sandeep previously directed Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani-starrer Kabir Singh. Animal also brings together Ranbir with actors Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol for the first time.

Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani is garnering all the buzz especially after the makers released the first song ‘Tum Kya Mile’. Starring opposite Ranveer Singh, this Karan Johar directorial is scheduled to hit the silver screens next month and is touted to be a grand love story and rom-com. The film also stars Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan.

Rick Froberg, the singer, guitarist and visual artist best known for taking the knotty, overdriven sound of math rock into the mainstream (or close to it) with his influential San Diego band Drive Like Jehu, died Friday in San Diego. He was 55.

His death was confirmed Saturday by his longtime bandmate John Reis, who wrote on Instagram that he “passed away suddenly last night from natural causes.”

“His art made life better,” Reis wrote. “The only thing he loved more than art and rock and roll was his friends. He will forever be remembered for his creativity, vision and his ability to bring beauty into this world. I love you, Rick. I will miss you for the rest of my life.”

Signed to the major label Interscope Records in the early 1990s as part of a package deal that included Reis’ more commercially appealing Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu specialized in a brand of loud and structurally ambitious indie rock that served as a key inspiration for acts like Modest Mouse and At the Drive-In.

Yet the band was just one of several Froberg played with in a career that stretched over three decades: Before Drive Like Jehu, he and Reis played in Pitchfork, whose 1990 LP “Eucalyptus” is widely regarded as a post-hardcore classic; after Drive Like Jehu broke up in 1995, he and Reis formed Hot Snakes, and Froberg later founded Obits. Each band was built around his belief that blistering noise and catchy hooks could easily coexist; as a vocalist, Froberg honed a kind of desperate yelp that carried equal parts emotion and disgust.

Drive Like Jehu’s self-titled debut came out in 1991; “Yank Crime,” its sophomore LP and first for Interscope, followed in 1994, several years after the runaway success of Nirvana’s smash “Nevermind” set off a feeding frenzy for rough-edged bands with strong local followings. The band’s drummer, Mark Trombino, went on to produce hit records by Jimmy Eat World and Blink-182; Trombino also opened Donut Friend, the hipster-fave L.A. doughnut shop with treats named after post-punk bands such as Fugazi and Hüsker Dü.

In addition to music, Froberg was an illustrator who designed striking album covers for his bands as well as for Rocket from the Crypt, Sparta and others.

Drive Like Jehu reunited in 2014 for a performance at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in San Diego’s Balboa Park and later played festivals including Coachella. Hot Snakes released four studio albums between 2000 and 2018; Obits’ most recent album, “Die at the Zoo,” came out in 2021.

Andy Muschietti’s The Flash is currently projected to become Warner Bros.’ biggest flop in studio history.

Following an overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth marketing campaign, fueled by comments from actor Tom Cruise, author Stephen King, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, The Flash is bombing at the domestic and global box office.

Starring Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, and Sasha Calle, Warner Bros.’ (WB) latest DC film earned less than $100 million at the domestic box office to date.

Stumbling into its third weekend, The Flash is losing 1,538 North American movie theaters, making the chance for a miraculous recovery even lower.

The Flash May Become Warner Bros’ Greatest Failure

DC

Box office analyst Luiz Fernando recently observed that if The Flash‘s poor performance keeps up, it will lead the film to lose Warner Bros. more than $200 million.

Fernando mentioned that The Flash‘s hefty $150 promotional budget may not even be recouped by box office earnings, and WB would’ve “lost less money releasing it on Max or not releasing it at all.”

So where would this stack up against other massive Warner Bros. flops of the past?

Due to the global pandemic and WB’s decision to release all of its films day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max, several recent films have been big losers for the studio.

Directly impacted by COVID-19, Wonder Woman 1984 lost an estimated $137 million while its DC counterpart, The Suicide Squad (which was met with great critical reception), lost $120 million.

Two other recent flops (day-and-date releases) were The Matrix Resurrections, starring Keanu Reeves, and LeBron James’ Space Jam: A New Legacy remake. The former lost $130 million while the latter vanished $111 million for WB.

Warner Bros. also suffered a couple of pre-pandemic flops during the 2010s. 2017’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, starring Charlie Hunnam, lost the studio approximately $153.2 million after earning less than $149 million worldwide.

The epic space failure starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, Jupiter Ascending, lost WB roughly $120 million, earning a bleak $47.4 million domestically ($183.9 million total worldwide).

For comparison’s sake, The Flash would be a crushing loss for WB, a historic failure (even when adjusted for inflation) akin to Disney’s John Carter catastrophe.

Not adjusting for inflation, here’s a better look at how The Flash‘s potential loss would stack up against other WB flops:

  • The Flash – $200 million (estimated)
  • King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – $153.2 million
  • Wonder Woman 1984 – $137 million
  • The Matrix Resurrections – $130 million
  • Jupiter Ascending – $120 million
  • The Suicide Squad – $120 million
  • Space Jam: A New Legacy – $111 million

This a painful reality for a company that was confident this would be a hit after two lukewarm performances by Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Will Blue Beetle & Aquaman 2 Release in Theaters?

Typically, earth-shaking box office failures aren’t brushed off by studio executives. This is the studio that put Batgirl on ice in order to save money, so now, the attention turns to Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

These are the last two DC films of 2023 and the final WB superhero flicks greenlit by the past regime.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will hit theaters five years following its massive $1 billion 2018 hit starring Jason Momoa.

Releasing Aquaman 2 directly to Max or scrapping it entirely is a farfetched idea; there’s still likely some audience for this, one bigger than The Flash‘s, WB hopes.

Blue Beetle, however, has been on a completely different course to theatrical release. Originally meant for a direct-to-streaming release, the origin story starring Xolo Maridueña may need to revert to plan A.

A wide release is expensive not only to play in theaters across the globe but the marketing dollars spent so audiences know of the movie’s release.

The Flash‘s marketing budget was treated as if it was going to be one of 2023’s summer smash hits. WB can’t afford to pour any more money into Blue Beetle, a complete unknown that will need incredibly positive word-of-mouth to perform admirably at the August box office.

DC fans may just need a reset, which they’re getting on June 11, 2025 when Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, hits theaters.

The Flash is currently playing in theaters.

UFL has dropped new teases from Strikerz Inc. to follow up on episode 1, where they examined the creation of the stadiums in the game and the finer details they are trying to implement to stand out above the rest of their competitors.

In episode 2, they go further in detail about what to expect and discuss Artificial Intelligence, cutscenes, and new skeletons of the video game. The most exciting revelation from the latest episode of UFL Journey is that the game is now 80% complete. However, AI Assist Team Lead, Andrey Pashkevich, feels there is still much work to be done before the game’s release but admitted the most challenging elements are behind them.

With this news, the release date of 2023 is achievable. The other 20% still being worked on are: bug fixes and trying to fit the mechanics they’ve worked on so tirelessly into production.

The UFL Journey Director Tigran Spertsyan chats to CTO Max Chernega, Cutscene Team Lead Anatoliy Borodich, AI Assist Team Lead Andrey Pashkevich, and AI Director Mikhail Kontus about:

Cutscenes

They discuss the work and progress made so far and how they are to make the cutscenes more fun by developing more celebrations while increasing the combination of celebrations. Furthermore, they are currently working on the transition between games and broadcasting, designing more and better camera angles.

Player Animation

They talk about how the animation of the players has improved since implementing more animators during the game’s development. They are working on fine-tuning tackling, passing, player faints, collisions, and much more.

The Realism of the UFL Gameplay

An extensive conversation about how realistic they will make the game takes place in episode 2. Are they going for full-simulation football or full arcade mode? Anatoliy Borodich talks about using camera shake, lens flair, and out-of-focus scenes with distorted shots to ensure the perfect blend of both features.

The AI

The AI is the beating heart of the game. Chief Technology Officer, Max Chernega, talks about how the game is being made with a fully adjustable system so that the players can control the team’s behavior completely.

They’ve worked on every aspect of every situation, and AI support is also being buffed up heavily on UFL. He goes as far as saying that if a player wants to create a team identical to the team they support, tactics and all, they will be able to.

New Skeleton

Out with the old and in with the new. They dropped the old skeleton and produced a new one. The new skeleton used by Strikerz Inc. is said to be essential for them moving away from the robot-like player movement showcased in their first release that took heavy criticism from the public.

They’ve used a frame extremely close to a human skeleton to ensure the player’s movement, body shape, and style are as realistic as a real player running and kicking the ball on a football pitch.

And Just Like That… star Cynthia Nixon has shared her disappointment that the much-hyped cameo appearance by Kim Cattrall in the second series was leaked before it made it to air.

Nixon told The Times newspaper in the UK of her concern that Samantha Jones’s reappearance isn’t going to live up to the hype:

“We were very disappointed that the secret leaked of Kim’s upcoming appearance. We so hoped it was something people wouldn’t know about until they saw the episode and that it would be a fun surprise as they were watching.

“I worry that with all the build-up people are going to wonder what all the fuss was about. It’s important to know that it is a very brief, very small cameo.”

Nixon has been part of the cast from the start, and directed two episodes of the new show, while her co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis are both exec producers.

Cattrall was absent from the first series, amid reports of an ongoing feud between her and the rest of the cast. She previously refused to take part in a third film of the original series Sex and the City.

Nixon was more positive about the reasons for bringing the show back after more than a decade away.

“I’m 57 and I feel like the fifties, the perimenopausal, post-menopause, should be, frankly, a really golden time in a woman’s life. It has certain things in common with adolescence: you can return to yourself and ask, ‘Who am I? What do I wanna be?’ There is a chance to look at your life and make some changes or draw some boundaries.”

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” director James Mangold is already plotting a reunion with Lucasfilm on an upcoming original “Star Wars” movie. But it won’t mark his first time writing scripts set in a galaxy far, far away.

Mangold previously tried to develop a Boba Fett spin-off movie that would have taken the franchise in a dramatically different direction than what ultimately materialized in “The Book of Boba Fett.” In a new appearance on Happy Sad Confused, Mangold recalled writing a script that would have pushed the boundaries of what’s acceptable in the “Star Wars” universe.

“At the point I was doing it I was probably scaring the shit out of everyone,” Mangold said. “I was making much more of a borderline R-rated, single-planet spaghetti Western. They probably would never be able to embrace Baby Yoda if I had made that. It didn’t really belong in the world I was kind of envisioning.”

The director lamented that his plans for the movie were ultimately scrapped after Lucasfilm pivoted to focusing on television.

“In a moment of corporate realignment or whatever happened with the Han Solo movie, they just suddenly decided they weren’t making pictures like that, and the opportunities in streaming presented themselves,” he said. “I was just listening to Ennio Morricone all day, all night, and typing away. I’m not sure it ever would have happened. I’m not sure it was in anyone’s plans, what I was thinking.”

While making a “Star Wars” movie would be a daunting challenge for any filmmaker, Mangold is no stranger to playing in big sandboxes. In a recent interview with IndieWire’s Anne Thompson, he recalled overcoming his initial hesitation about directing “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” because he wanted to work with his heroes.

“I had admired all these cool potential collaborators all my life. And despite warning signs of this kind of a movie being a bear to manage and to launch, and expectations would run in all sorts of directions, and not all of them could ever be met, the thing that was most seductive was the personal opportunity to work with Harrison, Steven, Kathy, George, and John Williams,” he said. “It was impossible to say ‘no’ to what was essentially the personal opportunity of a lifetime because you don’t ever get close to people unless you do something together.”

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”

Despite Harrison Ford striking a distinctly more sentimental and appreciative tone during the Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny press cycle, Anthony Mackie assures the world he’s still Harrison Ford. Set to make his MCU debut in Captain America: Brave New World, Ford is replacing the late William Hurt as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Though we were wondering why Sam Elliott, who originated and crushed the role in Ang Lee’s Hulk, isn’t taking over, now we know why. Only Harrison Ford could call the movie a “piece of shit” in a way that endears himself to his co-stars. At least, that’s how Anthony Mackie remembers it.

In an interview with Inverse, Mackie praised Ford though he found working with him “intimidating” initially. “I was so fucking nervous I couldn’t remember my lines,” Mackie said, seemingly unconcerned with the coarse language he used while promoting a Disney property. “He’s Harrison fucking Ford. There is this aura about him. But he dispels that really quickly because he’s such a cool guy. He’s everything a movie star should be.”

Ford was such a movie star that, according to Mackie, he’d chill everyone out by saying things like “‘Let’s shoot this piece of shit.’” Don’t worry. No one took offense to that. In Mackie’s retelling, it sounds like everyone on set just recontextualized Ford calling the movie a “piece of shit” into an expression of enthusiasm, a rallying cry for the production. “He would say, ‘Let’s shoot this piece of shit,” Mackie said. “And everybody was like, ‘Yeah, let’s shoot this shit.’” It doesn’t matter that shooting a “piece of shit” is different from “let’s shoot this shit.” The cast and crew just took it as a compliment. We assume this was all in good fun because Ford is known to have something of a wry sense of humor that people love. Mackie didn’t clarify, but it did help put him at ease, knowing he was in a “piece of shit.”

The actor didn’t offer details on the scenes between him and Ford, but they have a “relationship.” “We spent a good bit of time together,” he said. “Ross and Cap have always had that relationship where they were friends, and they respected each other, but they always bumped heads. That’s their relationship in the storyline.”

Of course, this was the same interview where Mackie decided to wade into the uncomfortable waters of defending Jonathan Majors, who stands accused of domestic abuse and was the subject of a damning Rolling Stone exposé. “We’re a country that was built on ‘everyone is innocent until proven guilty,’” he said. “That’s one of the staples of this country. Nothing has been proven about this dude. Nothing. So everyone is innocent until proven guilty. That’s all I can say. It’s crazy where we are as a society. But as a country, everyone is innocent until proven guilty.”

Mackie was the first person within the Marvel universe to weigh in on the accusations. Yesterday, Rolling Stone released the findings of a three-month investigation into the allegations, speaking to more than 40 of Majors’ associates. More than a dozen substantiated claims that Majors was emotionally and/or physically abusive.

It’s been 37 years, and we’re still talking about that volleyball scene in Top Gun, and even though it’s only been a year, the same can be said about the shirtless football sequence in its legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick. Now, Greg Tarzan Davis, who played Coyote in the Tom Cruise-led film, has opened up about how he still gets asked about that scene even though the film has been out for well over 365 days.

Before the football scene came up, Greg Tarzan Davis was speaking to ET about his upcoming role in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. While they chatted about stunt driving, and working with Tom Cruise, eventually he was asked which movie made him get in better shape. The actor pointed to the shirtless beach scene in Maverick for his answer, saying:

I would have to say Top Gun: Maverick got me into better shape because of the beach [football] scene. I wanted to make sure when that shirt came off I had to make sure those [abs] were popping. They still talking about that today. They’re like, ‘Man, you need some baby oil!’ And I’m like, ‘No, no. I’m in a different movie now but thank you.’

Pat McAfee recently struck a deal to bring his namesake sports commentary show to ESPN. The former NFL player has been receiving backlash after the sports network announced layoffs and many viewers are correlating that it has to do with McAfee.

McAfee, who is also an analyst on ESPN’s College GameDay, took to Twitter to clear things up and address the “mass exits.”

“I did a lot of reflecting about our show’s journey while I was getting murdered on the internet today (hell yeah).. all roads lead back to how honored I am to be the leader of such a talented group and how lucky I am to be a part of this team,” he tweeted.

He continued, “We’re very pumped to be joining ESPN and our goal is that ‘Mass exits’ are never a thing again.. we hope to help that.. obviously that’s a lofty goal but, that’s how I truly look at life… I wish we could’ve worked alongside a lot of the folks that got released today. Some absolute legends, that we all respect, in the sports media world were trending today for losing jobs. That sucks.. no matter how you slice it.”

ESPN cut about 20 on-air personalities from its airwaves, including College GameDay’s David Pollack, Jalen Rose and Jordan Cornette. Other analysts and reporters that were axed included Suzy Kolber, Max Kellerman, Jeff Van Gundy, Keyshawn Johnson, Matt Hasselbeck, Chris Chelios, Steve Young, Rob Ninkovich, Neil Everett, Ashley Brewer, Joon Lee, LaPhonso Ellis, Todd McShay and Jason Fitz.

When Olivia Rodrigo revealed the cover of her second album, Guts, some fans shot off complaints about how the artwork, a portrait of Rodrigo posed against a shadowy violet backdrop, was too similar to the cover of 2021’s Sour. The expectation that every new pop record must possess its own unmistakable aesthetic, heralding the arrival of a distinct new “era,” feels overwhelming in 2023. So it’s meaningful that “Vampire,” the first new music from Rodrigo since she evolved from a Disney Channel starlet to a Grammy-winning superstar, builds off the model of “drivers license,” her debut single that framed young love through a plastic symbol of adulthood.

“Vampire” begins similarly with melancholic piano keys, but instead of crumbling into tears, Rodrigo boils with anger as she chastises an older ex for his superficiality and manipulative behavior. Here, she reunites with Sour producer Dan Nigro, showing off their undeniable songwriting chemistry and theatrical flair. There’s an unhurried emotional logic to the track’s structure, mirroring a young woman’s gradual understanding of her own agency. Rodrigo works through disbelief as she recalls the way she was led to write off other women’s concerns—“You called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called them crazy too.” But it’s the song’s chorus that’s especially showstopping, even as it indulges in some on-the-nose imagery. “I should have known it was strange/You only come out at night,” Rodrigo sings, balancing rage and disappointment, both in this crummy dude and in herself. By the time she reaches the chorus’ conclusion, she’s rightfully furious: “Bloodsucker, fame fucker/Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire.” This is how you leave a guy for dead.

What’s it like to be trapped in a world you cannot control? PS King’s animated short, Anatomy of a Supernova, takes us to such a world.

Usually, when I review a film, I like to judge it solely by what is thrown up on the screen and coming at it fresh. Here though, it’s best to have context before going in for the experience to make sense. Not long ago, King admitted himself into a psych ward. He states that in the first hour, he experienced an anxiety attack and then dissociated during that time. This animated short is an attempt to capture that experience.

“…King finds himself as a small robot trapped in Machine City.”

In Anatomy of a Supernova, King finds himself as a small robot trapped in Machine City. His only means of escape comes in the persona of the Ferryman, but in order to leave, he has to pay for passage. King uses stark and startling imagery to tell this story of a small robot. He combines manipulated still images and almost Terry Gilliam-like animation to invoke disorientating feelings and chaos his mind was going through in the psych ward. The Ferryman represents his psych ward doctor, who promises a way of escape but needs payment to show him the way out.

Anatomy of a Supernova is not your typical narrative short. The film exists to bring you in and hopefully understand and feel what King felt in his dissociative haze. It’s very much a story of the struggles he fought to find a place of peace in his battle for mental health. Like abstract art in general, one must wrestle mentally and emotionally to extract meaning and insight. In other words, you’ll have to put some work into this film.

Anatomy of a Supernova is available to be screened on YouTube.

Kim Zolciak-Biermann is being sued for her unpaid Target credit card bill.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta star, 45, has a $2,482.24 balance, but she allegedly hasn’t made a payment since September 2022. Target National Bank filed a complain on Wednesday, June 28, that claims Zolciak-Biermann has “failed, neglected and refused” to pay off the principal balance, according to documents obtained by Page Six.

The legal action comes amid Zolciak-Biermann and Kroy Biermann‘s messy split, which was sparked by financial issues, a source exclusively told Us Weekly in May.

“The financial burdens have been a strain on their relationship,” the source said of the Bravo star and the former NFL player, 37, who were married for 11 years. “Between the tax debt and other financial stresses, it’s been difficult. The tax debt was the straw that broke the camel’s back in their marriage.”

Zolciak-Biermann and Biermann met in 2010 before tying the knot in 2011. The estranged couple share four children: sons Kroy “KJ” Jr., 11, and Kash, 10, and twins Kaia and Kane, 9. After their wedding, the athlete also adopted his wife’s two daughters from previous relationships: Brielle, 26, and Ariana, 21. Biermann has requested ownership of the estate and sole custody of their minor children amid their breakup.

Zolciak-Biermann’s unpaid Target bill is the latest in a slew of headlines about their debts. Hours before their divorce filing made headlines, TMZ reported that Zolciak-Biermann and Biermann owe more than $1.1 million in unpaid taxes.

Earlier this year, Us confirmed that the couple’s Alpharetta, Georgia, home is in foreclosure. The property was purchased in 2012 for $880,000. After the duo defaulted on their mortgage payments in August 2022, Trust Bank began foreclosure proceedings. An auction of the property was scheduled for March but later canceled, with no update on whether it will proceed at a later date.

In court documents obtained by Us in late May, Biermann alleged the Zolciak-Biermann has a gambling problem. “[Kim is] spending substantial time and marital funds on gambling and other games of chance” and “this compulsion has financially devastated the parties,” he alleged.

The athlete claimed that “[her] time is so consumed with online gambling” that she cannot properly take care of their children. He included thousands of dollars’ worth of checks and bank statements that allegedly showed proof of the “Wig” singer’s gambling. She completed a parenting course in the wake of his claims.

His allegations were filed after Zolciak-Biermann requested for her estranged spouse to undergo drug testing. In court documents obtained by Us, she claimed to have seen Biermann “smoking marijuana” and stated that she has “serious concerns for the safety and well being of the minor children” while under his care.

“It’s really sad the way Kroy is causing our divorce to play out in the media like this because it could have a profound effect on our children in the long run,” Zolciak-Biermann’s lawyer said in a statement on June 13. “To continuously spread lies in an attempt to paint Kim as an unfit mother for his own gain is harmful and incredibly misleading regarding Kim’s efforts to raise her children.”

Biermann has since requested the court to appoint family law attorney Diane Woods as Guardian ad Litem for the pair’s four minor children “so that she may immediately begin her investigation.”

Twitter owner Elon Musk made an abrupt announcement Saturday morning: the social media service has instituted a “temporary limit” on the amount of posts that users can read. Verified accounts that have paid for a Twitter Blue subscription can view 8000 posts per day, while unverified accounts — the vast majority of Twitter users — may only view 800 posts per day.

Newly registered unverified accounts get even less at 400 per day, though Musk did not specify how old an account must be to qualify for that tier.

When the update was first announced, post viewing was limited to 6000, 600 and 300, respectively across those same categories of users.

Musk explains that the guardrails have been created “to address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation.” The announcement come a day after Twitter’s Friday action to block access to the website for anyone who isn’t signed in as a registered user.

“Temporary emergency measure. We were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users!” Musk wrote on Friday afternoon. He also claimed that “several hundred organizations” were scraping Twitter data more aggressively, impacting user experience.

“What should we do to stop that? I’m open to ideas,” Musk posited. This new daily limit to readable posts seems to be one of those ideas.

It remains unclear how long these “temporary” limitations will be enforced.

These recent announcements are the latest tumultuous developments in the multi-billionaire’s venture with the social media site, after announcing his bid to purchase Twitter in April 2022 before officially acquiring it in Oct. 2022.

Musk appointed Linda Yaccarino, NBCU’s former top advertising sales exec, as Twitter’s new CEO in early June. Through her new role, Yaccarino oversees business operations with a goal of driving up advertising revenue. In addition to changing leadership, Musk laid off around 80% of Twitter’s employees since taking over the site. He has since shared that he would attempt to rehire some of those employees after the platform has faced technical issues, including the poor execution of a Twitter Spaces live audio event with Ron DeSantis, who used the occasion to announce his 2024 presidential campaign.

In true Vivica A. Fox fashion, she’s keeping it real when it comes to why she believes 2016’s “Independence Day: Resurgence” wasn’t the success it could’ve been: It needed Will Smith.

“I just didn’t feel like it was good and lived up to the first one,” Fox told A.V. Club while promoting her true-crime series “The Interrogation Room.” “I really feel we missed out… by not bringing Will Smith back.”

Will Smith was in talks to return for “Independence Day: Resurgence” (and a third film that was planned at the time) but negotiations fell apart over Smith’s salary.

With Roland Emmerich directing and cowriting the script with Dean Devlin, the sequel took place 20 years after the first. In that time, Smith’s character, Steven Hiller, had died and returning and new characters now had to protect Earth from a new threat.

Fox reprised the role of Jasmine Dubrow. She was joined by returning cast members that included Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. Franchise newcomers including Liam Hemsworth and Sela Ward also joined the sequel.

Without Smith, “Resurgence” would ultimately go on to make a worldwide box office total of $389.7 million (versus the first film’s $817.4 million), against a production budget of $165 million.

“We had most of the original cast on but I think the one true link that was missing to the success of ‘Independence Day 2’ was that… Will Smith wasn’t there,” Fox said. “And I’m going to tell you I’m going to keep it real. I was at the premiere and I was like let’s see how the fans are going to feel about this and sure enough on Twitter they blew me up.”

Today, “Independence Day: Resurgence” has a 29% critics score and a 30% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the 1996 original’s 68% and 75% scores, respectively.

“High Desert” is headed beyond the horizon at Apple TV+. In a video posted on Instagram Saturday morning, series star Patricia Arquette shared that the production had not received an order for a second season at the streamer.

“A lot of you have asked about ‘High Desert’ and if there was going to be a second season, so I just wanted to let you know that we just found out that we won’t be coming back,” Arquette opened. “That’s a sad bummer for all of us.”

Arquette extended her gratitude to the crew, writers and actors on the series. The post was accompanied with a text caption: “It stinks.”

“We just had a blast. I love Peggy and that punk rock world,” Arquette continued. “Thanks to you guys for watching. Can’t win them all. You know, it sucks but… tough.”

Representatives for Apple TV+ were not immediately available for comment.

“High Desert” premiered its first three episodes of Season 1 on May 17, releasing a new episode each subsequent Wednesday before concluding with a finale on June 21. Arquette starred as Peggy Newman, a drug addict who turns a new leaf by absconding to the Yucca Valley desert to become a private eye.

Nancy Fichman, Katie Ford and Jennifer Hoppe served as writers and creators on the oddball series. The trio executive produced alongside Ben Stiller, Nicky Weinstock, Jackie Cohn, Molly Madden, Tom Lasally and John Cameron, as well as Jay Roach, who directed all eight episodes. Michelle Graham served as co-executive producer.

“I really loved Peggy — her weird way of looking at the world, and her funny sense of humor,” Arquette told Variety around the series premiere. “Jay described her to me as a rock ‘n’ roll hummingbird.”

Moss and Levene push back against his generalizations, accusations and abuse; Aaronow does not. He just sits there and takes it. “You think this is abuse?” Blake thunders at him. “You can’t take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?” In that delicate moment, Arkin’s face is a mask, trying to keep it together and failing; if you look close enough, into his eyes, he seems on the verge of tears. When he’s finally out of the hotshot’s sights, he lets out a long-held breath.

This sensitivity is what separates Arkin’s character, and his performance, from the varying displays of roaring machismo in “Glengarry Glen Ross.” Pacino’s Roma is all bravado, much of it earned; Lemmon’s Levene and Harris’s Moss attempt the same, snapping and shouting at all who do them wrong, silkily selling to those on the other end of the phone, but their swagger seems more like bluster. Aaronow, on the other hand, is entirely vulnerable, an open wound of desperation and fear. “I’m sure he didn’t mean it, about trimming down the sales force,” he insists, the second Blake leaves, but denial soon gives way to depression. “They’re gonna bounce me out of a job,” he moans to Moss, placing the blame not on the cutthroat standards of the office or the cratering economy outside it, but himself. “Something’s wrong with me,” he insists. “I can’t close ’em.”

In this weakened state, he goes to Moss for emotional support and encouragement; Moss seizes on that need and exploits it, drawing Aaronow into an ill-advised scheme to burglarize the Premiere Properties office and steal the new leads, the good leads, the Glengarry leads. The bullish Moss baits the hook and reels the weaker man in, planting the idea and prompting further inquiry. Watch Arkin’s eyes in this sequence, the way he’s listening, how he takes in the information he’s receiving and processes it; listen closely to the way he says a line like, “Are we talking about this, or are we just talking about this,” understanding the difference between two versions of the word, and deftly conveying it to the listener. And then watch the way he registers that, merely by listening, he has become an accessory to the crime. The simplicity with which that realization comes over his face, and how he puts it across in one simple word (“Me”) is both an astonishing display of acting technique and a heart-wrenching moment of character identification.

Arkin and Harris play this duet sequence like two jazz musicians trading bebop riffs, the relationship established not only by what they say but how they say it — the breakneck tempo, offhand jargon, sentences or even words interrupted midstream, sometimes because one knows where the other is going, sometimes because they can’t bother to wait to say what’s on their mind. Mamet’s hyper-stylized dialogue isn’t easy to act; if the rhythm is off, it can feel unbearably phony, “written” rather than spoken. But Arkin more than holds his own against Harris here, and in later duets with Pacino, a similarly heavyweight dramatic actor.

Yet the genius of his casting is that he can also draw on his innate sense of comic timing, garnering laughs from these jagged exchanges, or when he later overplays his sense of outrage at the crime (“Criminals come, they take and they steal the phones!”) and his interrogation by police (“I meet Gestapo tactics!”). But his best moments as Aaronow are his quiet ones, like when he softly implores Moss (once he’s caught in the mousetrap), “Why are you doing this to me?” He’s not playing for sympathy; this is a muted cry of abandon and despair.

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will return for Spider-Man 4, but which MCU characters will join him for the No Way Home sequel?

The MCU’s Spider-Man saga closed the book on its “Homecoming” trilogy with No Way Home, with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker preparing to enter a new era in his fourth movie as he makes the jump into the street level.

Spider-Man 4 is currently in development across Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, although work was recently halted due to the ongoing writer’s strike.

A release date has yet to be confirmed, but many speculated the flick could land on June 27, 2025 as Sony marked out the date for a mystery Marvel movie.

Most Likely

Spider-Man

Marvel Studios

It wouldn’t be Spider-Man 4 without the MCU’s Peter Parker himself, so, obviously, Tom Holland will be back for the next installment.

The flick is expected to take the wall-crawler on a new journey as a street-level hero now that the entire world, including his friends, has forgotten who he is after the ending of No Way Home.

Michelle Jones (MJ)

Zendaya, MJ
Marvel Studios

As one of today’s biggest rising stars, Zendaya is expected to return for another key role as Peter’s love interest Michelle Jones (MJ) in Spider-Man 4.

The No Way Home script may have even teased her arc as it noted a “flicker of deja vu” in her final talk with Peter, suggesting her memories of him may not be completely gone.

Ned Leeds

Ned Leeds
Marvel Studios

Ned Leeds actor Jacob Batalon may have stated how he isn’t so hopeful for Spider-Man 4, but it’s tough to see him not returning.

After all, when No Way Home left off, he was still friends with MJ and off to study at MIT with her. Not to mention, Batalon already teased how a villain arc may be in the cards for him.

J. Jonah Jameson

J Jonah Jameson
Marvel Studios

Speaking after his surprise return as J. Jonah Jameson in Far From Home, J.K. Simmons confirmed he is contracted for more movies and even stated after No Way Home how he expected to do more.

So it seems likely The Daily Bugle’s editor-in-chief will be back to as Spider-Man’s arch-rival.

Likely

Daredevil

Charlie Cox, Daredevil
Marvel Studios

With Spider-Man 4 confirmed to be a street-level affair, rumor has it the movie may even follow the aftermath of Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again.

Fans got a taste of a crossover between Daredevil and Spider-Man in No Way Home in a strictly legal form, so, hopefully, Charlie Cox’s hero gets the chance to actually suit up this time.

Kingpin

Vincent D'Onofrio, Kingpin
Marvel Studios

Speaking of Born Again, Kingpin’s Vincent D’Onofrio has been clamoring to fight Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Reports indicate Wilson Fisk’s mayoral campaign and anti-vigilante agenda in the Daredevil reboot may impact Spider-Man 4, potentially lining him up for an appearance to continue that story on the big screen.

Betty Brant

Betty Brant
Marvel Studios

Angourie Rice’s Betty Brant was an important part of the Spider-Man supporting cast over the last three movies, so it’s easy to imagine her returning.

Her chances are raised by how Brant starred in a key part of No Way Home‘s marketing campaign through a series of Daily Bugle reports – where she is now interning.

Flash Thompson

Flash Thompson
Marvel Studios

Tony Revolori’s Flash Thompson seems to be a likely pick for Spider-Man 4, and the actor himself has expressed his hopes of returning.

Perhaps the only obstacle comes with how Peter Parker is now out of high school with everyone having forgotten him, and it’s tough to see him rushing back to his old bully anytime soon.

Possible Picks

Happy Hogan

Happy Hogan
Marvel Studios

Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan found his new calling in the MCU as a close ally of Spider-Man and the young hero’s middle-man to Tony Stark.

As Peter is leaving behind his Iron Man-related past to become a street-level hero and Happy’s love interest Aunt May is dead, there may be no place for him in Spider-Man 4.

Venom

Tom Hardy, Venom
Sony Pictures

After Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene, Eddie Brock is no longer in the MCU, but a trace of the Venom symbiote is.

However, Venom reportedly won’t be the focus of Spider-Man 4, leaving the black suit storyline for a future movie down the line.

Tombstone

Tombstone
Marvel

With Kingpin rumored to appear in Spider-Man 4, the notorious crime boss could play a similar role to what he did in Into the Spider-Verse as an ally of Wilson Fisk.

But with the villain reportedly eyed for Sony’s El Muerto, which exists separately from the MCU, the chances of his involvement appear slim.

Hammerhead

Hammerhead
Marvel

Much like Tombstone, Hammerhead has plenty of reason to get involved in a street-level Spider-Man 4, with the villain being a Maggia mobster who had most of his skull replaced with steel after an accident.

Hammerhead could be an excellent threat for a crime-based story with the potential to even create ties to Kingpin.

Scorpion

Scorpion, Spider-Man Homecoming
Marvel Studios

Six years have passed since Scorpion was teased in Spider-Man: Homecoming as Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan was left seeking revenge against the wall-crawler.

That tease has yet to be followed up on to this day; perhaps this may be the next unresolved cliffhanger Marvel Studios finally addresses with Spider-Man 4.

Black Cat

Black Cat
Marvel

With Peter Parker heading to the street level after MJ lost all memory of him, now may be the time for Spider-Man to cross paths with Black Cat.

The cat burglar-turned-anti-hero is in many ways the Catwoman to Spider-Man’s Batman, with the two striking up a romantic relationship in many stories.

Long Shots

Gwen Stacy

Emma Stone, Gwen Stacy
Sony Pictures

As is the case with Black Cat, the time may be right for Peter Parker to find a new love interest, and Gwen Stacy may be just that.

Perhaps the biggest hurdle to her joining the MCU comes with how Sony appears eager to tie Stacy to Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker – shown by their relationship in the animated Spider-Verse.

Harry Osborn

Harry Osborn, James Franco
Sony Pictures

On top of potentially needing a new love interest, Peter may well be needing a new best friend with Ned out of the picture, setting the stage for Harry Osborn.

But this may be tough as No Way Home revealed the Spider-Man villain family doesn’t seem to even exist in the MCU, seemingly closing the door on their involvement.

Miles Morales

Miles Morales Spider-Man
Marvel

Miles Morales’ popularity has grown exponentially over recent years, so much so Sony has begun eyeing a live-action project with the alternate Spider-Man.

As Miles’ uncle Aaron Davis, aka Prowler, has already been introduced in the MCU, played by Donald Glover, maybe it’s time for Peter to meet the young hero-to-be.

Johnny Storm

Chris Evans, Human Torch
Marvel

With Marvel Comics, Spider-Man and Human Torch have a history of friendship, and the MCU finally has the opportunity to explore that in live-action – although no actor has yet been cast as the Fantastic Four hero.

Perhaps Peter Parker could cross paths with Johnny Storm at college and then team up as heroes.

The MCU’s Street Heroes

Marvel Street Heroes, Echo, Punisher, Kate Bishop
Marvel

With Spider-Man 4 reportedly set to connect to Daredevil: Born Again and its Kingpin storyline, perhaps other MCU street-level heroes who have crossed paths with Vincent D’Onofrio’s crime boss could appear.

The likes of Echo, Kate Bishop, and Punisher could team up with Spider-Man to continue their Kingpin vendetta.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

Sony's Spider-Man Universe, Morbius, Kraven, Vulture
Sony Pictures

Sony teased a larger plan for its Spider-Man spin-off universe which includes the likes of Venom, Morbius, Vulture, Kraven, and Madame Web, with the franchise seemingly heading for a crossover with the wall-crawler himself.

Which Spider-Man that will be remains to be seen, but if the goal is Tom Holland, the studio may look to leave the breadcrumbs heading to that crossover across the next trilogy, beginning with Spider-Man 4.

Spider-Man 4 has yet to set an official release date.

Ah, Christmas! An experience you wish could last all year long (Happy Christmas in July!). But since that’s not really possible, we have Christmas movies. And they’re more than just holiday entertainment. They’re a visual treat, a window of delight, that takes you into the spirit of the festival and gives you a free pass to stay there for as long as you want. From tear-jerking romantic comedies to animated musical adventures, the best Christmas movies encapsulate the true meaning and magic of the season in ways that is endearing and affectionate.

After all, nothing quite mimics the feeling of Christmas like settling in with a festive flick that gives you familiar tropes like snowy little towns blanketed in white, carolers singing away on street corners, and families reconnecting with one another. And yet, what remains constant is the uplifting nature of these different storylines and variations.

These movies remind us of what really matters at this special time of the year – being with our dear and beloved, sharing gratitude, and serving others from a place of honesty and care. Eben if you have to crawl through an air vent in a skyscraper to do it.

10 Die Hard (1988)

20th Century Fox

John McClane, an NYPD cop visiting his estranged wife and children with the hopes of spending Christmas with them, arrives in Los Angeles only to find himself trapped in a building under siege. German terrorists stopped the party and the celebrations and had innocent people held hostage in an atmosphere of dread. With no enforcement and against a heavily armed group, McClane becomes the solo hero fighting back the only way he knows how – with fists, bullets, and kicks.

Die Hard starts off as an incredible action-packed thrill ride, but underneath the high-stakes heroism is the touching story of a father reconnecting with his family. What’s more is the way Bruce Willis holds the fort with his sharp-tongued wit and humorous tension, making the film arguably the greatest Christmas action movie of all time.

9 Bad Santa (2003)

Billy Bob Thornton as Willie in Bad Santa
Miramax Films

Bad Santa follows a miserable conman Willie and his equally unpleasant little helper Marcus, who spend every December impersonating Santa and his elf in order to rob shopping malls. But one Christmas, their plans go awry because they end up forming an unlikely friendship with a troubled eight-year-old kid.

Bad Santa, written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, certainly pushes the limit of what the holiday envelops with its profane language and dark themes. However, in its heart, lies an ultimately sweet redemption story. Billy Bob Thornton delivers a career-best performance as the disdainful yet emotionally complex Father Christmas, making fans root and cheer for his anti-hero because beneath it all, he just wants love, acceptance, and a fresh start.

8 National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Warner Bros.

The 1989 classic by Jeremiah S. Chechik follows Chevy Chase’s Clark Griswold, who is obsessed with the idea of the perfect suburban Christmas, but his quest devolves into a hilarious disaster for the extended family. No matter how carefully Clark plans everything down to the T, things go quickly and comedically south. From decorations and light displays to family activities, every over-the-top attempt made by him to create the picture-perfect old-fashioned Christmas sees faults and mishaps.

Co-starring Randy Quaid and Juliette Lewis as Clark’s scheming Cousin Eddie and teenage daughter Audrey, this beloved comedy elevates itself into the holiday movie hall of fame with one hilarious sequence after another. Overall, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a story of family, humor, and heart.

7 A Christmas Carol (1951)

A Christmas Carol movie 1951
United Artists

A faithful and truly special adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, A Christmas Carol stars Alastair Sim in a brilliant performance as Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is a businessman who blazes his way through life without so much as a care for his deceitful ways. But he is given a life-changing visit by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future on Christmas Eve. The spirits offer him warnings and glimpses at what his life has been and could become if he doesn’t change his selfish ways until they are able to crack Scrooge’s tough exterior.

The movie is very dark, but it creates a clever balance between the goth aesthetic of Dickens’ novella and genuine humor and warmth. Alastair Sim shines through in bringing humanity to his character of Scrooge. Plus, the cinematography of the time and the entire vibe is quite nostalgic and beautiful.

6 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Jack Skellington observing a snow crystal
Walt Disney Pictures

Jack Skellington, king of “Halloween Town,” has grown weary of scaring people and now wishes to spread Christmas cheer by kidnapping Santa and taking over his role. But Jack’s selfish and unconventional methods threaten to ruin the holiday for children everywhere. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a beloved stop-motion animation classic surrounding Jack’s adventures between worlds of Halloween and Christmas.

Director Henry Selick uses colorful Gothic elements to add horror, and sweetly sinister characters like Sally the rag doll, Jack’s love interest, to weave a story that resonates with viewers of all ages. The takeaway? At its heart, this enduring classic is about embracing change and understanding differences even when they seem too big and bothersome. Something we could all use.

5 A Christmas Story (1983)

ralphie a christmas story

MGM/UA

Inspired by the wonderful writings of Jean Shepherd, A Christmas Story tells the comedic tale of Ralphie Parker, who spends the month leading up to Christmas obsessively begging his parents for an official Red Ryder 200-shot range model air rifle. We get to watch Ralphie indulge in various adorable mishaps and adventures – from his dealings with a school bully to troubling with Christmas advertising at the local department store.

Not a moment in the movie goes by without delivering a healthy dose of laughter and nostalgia for the simple pleasures of childhood wonder every year when the holiday season closes in. As for the narrative style, it is fondly detached but also very observant of the details when it comes to family traditions, something fittingly matched by its old-school aesthetic, all of which makes Ralphie’s classic tale a quintessential piece of pop culture.

4 Elf (2003)

Elf
New Line Cinema

Starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, a human who was raised by elves at the North Pole, the film follows his travels to New York City as he searches for his biological father. While searching for his real family, Buddy spreads Christmas cheer to everyone he meets. It’s as if he’s been living under a rock because of his childlike innocence and unfamiliarity with the big city, all of which cause him confusion and chaos.

Ferrell is truly wonderful as the hilarious and overly enthusiastic Buddy. From his affection towards the festival and love for elf culture to his unflinching zest for little things in life, Buddy’s story is brimming with joy and optimism. Elfexplores what really makes Christmas so lovely and blends the laughs and emotion in equal proportion.

3 Miracle On 34th Street (1994)

Miracle on 34th Street 1994
20th Century Fox

Miracle On 34th Street features a war between the authorities and the believers. The 1994 fantasy comedy-drama features a department store Santa that claims to be the real Kris Kringle. However believable his story, it is challenged to be false, and he is threatened to be institutionalized. But a young single mother and her daughter, Susan, become Kringle’s strongest supporters in a legal battle to prove his true identity.

The movie is a modern remake of the 1947 classic and is every bit as sweet and charming as the original. The Trial of Santa relies not on high stakes or heavier drama but on simple beliefs, faith, and the joyous spirit of Christmas.

2 Home Alone (1990)

Home Alone
20th Century Fox

This is a movie that probably needs no description because, come on, you’ve all seen it. But still, let’s do a quick recap. Home Alone follows an eight-year-old prankster named Kevin, who is accidentally left behind when his family flies away to Paris for Christmas. With no adults around, little Kevin can do whatever he wants. But his freedom is interrupted when two dim-witted burglars plots to enter his house on Christmas Eve.

This unwelcome company arrives with comedy, pranks, hijinks, and madcap fun while Kevin tries everything to defend his home and his holiday. The movie taps into the hope and joy we feel for the festival as children – a time when the house is full of toys and sweets and presents. It’s an absolute paradise. Macaulay Culkin perfectly captures the mixture of innocence and mischief that has defined the notoriety of his character. Meanwhile, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are deliciously wicked as the burglars. Ultimately, the film allows you to make the most of your favorite time of the year.

1 It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

It's a Wonderful Life
RKO Radio Pictures

It’s A Wonderful Life is a movie that proves that no matter how dull life gets, there is always hope and beauty if we choose to open our hearts and see it. It follows George Bailey, a discouraged building and loan manager, as he contemplates suicide on Christmas Eve. An angel is sent to guide him through revelations that show what life would be like if he had never been born.

The quintessential feel-good Christmas classic is not only uplifting in every which way but also deeply touching in its exploration of the importance of every single human life. Jimmy Stewart delivers one of his most memorable performances as the main lead who realizes just how loved he is. The movie’s message is simple, but it resonates particularly well during the festive season. Directed by Frank Capra, this lovely tale is truly unforgettable.

Ah, Christmas! An experience you wish

Do we talk about David Lean enough? Probably not.

I recently got into this David Lean kick that I just cannot shake. He’s the mind behind movies like Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago. He’s a legendary British filmmaker and is renowned for his ability to craft epic movies with impeccable attention to detail and a unique visual style.

Still, I feel like his name rarely comes up in the conversations I’m having about the best directors of all time. His work has influenced generations of filmmakers, including prominent figures such as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

So today, I want to spend some time going over his genius and the beauty of his work.

Early Years and Entry into Filmmaking

Raised in a strict Quaker household, David Lean did not have the opportunity to experience the world of cinema until adulthood. His passion for filmmaking was ignited during his first job at Gaumont British Studios as a tea boy, clapper, and messenger in 1927.

Lean quickly made a name for himself in editing and eventually co-directed his first feature film alongside Noel Coward.

The Impact of Noel Coward and Charles Dickens on Lean’s Career

Lean’s early work was heavily influenced by the plays of Noel Coward and the novels of Charles Dickens. The opportunity to work with Coward resulted in film adaptations of his plays, which showcased Lean’s talent for visual storytelling.

Additionally, Lean’s adaptations of Dickens’ novels, like Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, allowed him to further refine his directorial skills and establish his name in the world of cinema.

The Emergence of David Lean as a Master Filmmaker

Lean was making stunning movies, but he didn’t get enough credit until the release of The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957. This film, along with Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, cemented Lean’s reputation as a master of epic cinema.

These grand-scale productions were characterized by their breathtaking visuals, meticulous attention to detail, and complex narratives.

And they were titles that demanded to be seen on the big screen.

Lean’s Unique Visual Style and Attention to Detail

Even on the biggest screens possible, Lean wanted the details to pop.

David Lean was known for his obsession with filmmaking and his dedication to capturing the perfect image. He believed that every frame of a movie should be breathtakingly beautiful and contribute to the overall narrative. This conviction is evident in his films, which are filled with stunning visuals and meticulously crafted scenes. Lean’s attention to detail extended beyond the visuals, as he was also known for his dedication to capturing authentic performances from his actors.

The Challenges and Rewards of Working with David Lean

Like many of the greats, Lean demanded perfection from top to bottom, and that could wear on crews and collaborators.

Working with Lean was often a demanding and challenging experience for his crews. His perfectionism and dedication to his craft resulted in lengthy shooting schedules and difficult working conditions. However, those who worked with him often spoke of Lean’s passion for filmmaking and the incredible results that came from his relentless pursuit of excellence.

The Female Protagonists in Lean’s Films

Despite being known for his epic films with male-dominated casts, Lean also directed several films that centered on female protagonists. This was way ahead of the time and his work to make sure these characters had urgency mattered.

These films, including Brief Encounter, The Passionate Friends, Madeleine, Hobson’s Choice, Summer Madness, Ryan’s Daughter, and A Passage to India, showcased Lean’s ability to explore complex emotions and relationships through the lens of his female leads.

Intimacy and Emotional Depth in Lean’s Films

In many epics, audiences lose the emotional details. But not in David Lean movies.

Lean’s films, whether epic or intimate, always contained a deep emotional core. This emotional depth is evident in both his large-scale productions and his smaller, character-driven films. Lean believed that cinema’s true power came from its ability to convey intimacy and emotion, and his films consistently showcased this belief.

‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’

David Lean’s Influence on Future Filmmakers

David Lean’s work has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema, inspiring future filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Martin Scorsese. Lean’s unique visual style, attention to detail, and dedication to storytelling have had a lasting impact on the art of filmmaking.

His influence can be seen in the works of many modern directors, who continue to draw inspiration from Lean’s iconic films.

The Legacy of David Lean

David Lean’s career spanned over four decades, and his body of work remains an important part of cinematic history. His films continue to captivate audiences and inspire future generations of filmmakers.

His dedication to the craft of filmmaking, his unique visual style, and his ability to convey deep emotion and intimacy through his films have solidified his place as one of the greatest directors of all time.

Lean’s impact on the world of cinema cannot be overstated. His visually stunning films, characterized by their epic scope and emotional depth, have left a lasting legacy on the art of filmmaking. Lean’s dedication to his craft, his unique visual style, and his ability to bring both high art and popular culture to the masses continue to inspire future generations of filmmakers.

What are some of your favorite movies he’s made?

Let me know in the comments.

Do we talk about David Lean

For those wishing to travel, Taron Lexton’s film, Nomad, is not only a story that highlights the human experience, but it is also a whirlwind adventure of the globe. Perhaps for those who never left their home country, Nomad will give a glimpse into all seven continents as director Taron Lexton of TXL Films develops a story with emotional attachments to two of his biggest loves: the human experiences that bond everyone together and worldwide travel.

Culturess: What excites you the most about Nomad?

Taron Lexton: I’m excited for people to see it, to be totally honest. I’ve been living with it for the last four years. To get to share it will be a relief, and I’m hoping that people will get to see it on the big screen because we filmed in IMAX, went through a lot of extra effort to make sure that it was a large format image and I’m excited for people to see it big.

Culturess: What made you interested in directing?

Taron Lexton: You know, it’s funny, I actually started as a child actor, and I think that was what got me into the process, and then around nine years old, I was standing on set, and my mom pulled me aside and said ‘you actually need to stop telling them how to shoot the scene. It’s not your job.’ and I was like, ‘Well, who’s job is that?’ ‘that’s the director’s job,’ I was like, ‘Okay, okay.’ So that was how it started, and honestly, I just get to enjoy the amazing creativity of all the people that are working with me. So that’s sort of what I love. It’s like an epic collaborative pleasurement that I get from it.

Culturess: How did you build TXL Films?

Taron Lexton: Slowly and painfully. It was a long, long process. Founded in 2005. I was a teenager in my mom’s attic. I loved making movies, so I was like, ‘Okay, cool, let’s make this official.’ From there, it started growing the way a lot of these companies start, where you’re just gathering your friends together, other people who are passionate about filmmaking. It started as two people, then five people, and now we’re up to about forty staff, and all over the country we’ve shot projects in more than fifty countries, all seven continents, and very, very grateful for all the amazing people who’ve lent their shoulders to where we’ve come so far.

Culturess: How is TXL Films bringing indie filmmaking to a global scale?

Taron Lexton: I mean, literally. I would say we basically took the indie mindset, which is use what you have, be maximally resourceful with a very small amount of resources, and we went, okay with who and what we have in 2018, what’s the biggest project we can imagine that would be do-able without getting a big studio budget, without getting a big star.

Essentially, this was it. It was to go global. It was to make a project that featured what we loved, which was travel, which was different cultures, different places, spectacular sights, and scenes all around the world, and try to leverage that into a cinematic experience. That was sort of what it was. We just thought globally. Our backyard basically was planet Earth. We have a lot of experience with doing projects around the world, and this was taking that to the next level.

Culturess: How do you portray your humanitarian vision in your films?

Taron Lexton: I would say my idea is to be pro-humanity. As a species, we’re emerging into this really unique and new state where we’re all connected with each other, and I don’t think we have yet to fully process that or figured out how to do it. What we’re experiencing, I think, is a lot of individual cultures, which have a lot of integrity to themselves, encountering each other, and there’s a new unified idea emerging, which is this human culture, this human experience. I think it’s incredibly inclusive, it’s incredibly diverse, it’s incredibly exciting, and it’s a journey that unfolds.

My experience growing up was extensively traveling all the time. I was constantly experiencing these different cultures and getting this sense of the humanity thread that was running through everybody. If you go to a village in Africa or go into the jungles of South America, you go into the streets of India, you look somebody in the eye and smile at them warmly, the vast likelihood is they’re going to smile back. A basic simple human connection like that’s the kind of thing that, to me, there’s this humanity really that threads through us all. So humanitarian, probably my mom is more the humanitarian between the two of us. She’s got a human rights organization where she travels the world and teaches kids about human rights, which is how I ended up traveling as a kid. I was following her around. But my vision, I think, is just a bit more humanity-focused and finding stories that encompasses as much of humanity as possible.

Culturess: You’ve filmed in a lot of places. How does your experience change based on where you are?

Taron Lexton: I think it changes profoundly. It’s really funny, it’s like no one can see the world through someone else’s eyes. So when you arrive at a new place, half of what’s interesting is discovering how do they see that place. We spent time with the Messiah Tribe in Tanzania, who are some of the warmest and most wonderful people that I’ve ever met. Just seeing their perspective on family dynamics and friendship. They consider themselves warriors, and I remember we had a vegetarian on our crew, and the challenge was the Messiah only eat meat. They only eat beef. But it was just sort of interesting. The idea that you would not eat meat was totally strange and foreign.

So it’s like I feel like every time we encounter a new place, a new culture, I feel my idea of the world expanding. How you can see the world expands. Possibilities I never would’ve thought of if we hadn’t gone out there. So that’s kind of the beauty of travel. It’s the beauty of this film is you really get to encounter just so many different perspectives. I think that’s the beauty of it. It’s the beauty of being human.

Culturess: What makes Nomad unique from your other projects?

Taron Lexton: I would say it’s just so much bigger. We love doing projects that take us around the world, take us different places. We’ve filmed in Egypt, filmed in India, filmed in a few different places. Our first feature film filmed in Italy, in Ohio, which was amazing. It was life-changing. This was just how do we take that to the next level. What’s the ultimate expression of that idea? So it’s really just the first project that we’ve done, and as far as we know, the first project ever, the first narrative feature to shoot on all seven continents. So it’s the first time in a narrative film that you will see all continents in one film. One storyline that runs through everything.

It was shot in thirty different countries, actually more than that, but thirty ended up in the film. It’s huge, it’s just a massive project. The logistics of it were insane. The difficulty level was insane. We faced hurricanes, venomous snakes, heat, cold, everything you can imagine, and also just an absolute blast. So as fun as it was to film in Italy, it was even more fun to film in all these different places.

Culturess: What types of stories do you enjoy pursuing the most?

Taron Lexton: I would say human stories. So I mean that in the broadest sense. I think it’s important to tell a smaller perspective, that is important. We need all of the stories, basically. When I look out across filmmaking today, I see a lot of individual groups, for example, or cultures having their voice heard, and I think that’s super important. I think what excites me the most is telling stories that encompass as many of those groups as possible. Not what makes us different but what makes us similar. Not what breaks us apart but what connects us.

So I like finding stories, I like hearing stories about people overcoming differences and overcoming challenges to connect and to find the common humanity. So I know that’s kinda a very general thing, but I love human stories that are about our humanity and about accomplishments and things that we can all feel some sense of pride about. Landing on the Moon was a human accomplishment, not an American thing, it was a human accomplishment. The Great Wall of China, I think that’s a human moment for us, so I think, like I said, we’re kinda writing this new chapter of humanity being connected with each other. Those are the kind of stories I’m interested in.

Culturess: Which movies or directors inspired your style?

Taron Lexton: Well, I grew up in the nineties, so I grew up in an age of giants. I had Speilberg and Zemeckis and James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow and massive talents just at the height of their powers. At that time, I remember it was sort of all the storytelling mastery of the seventies and eighties and then the technology of digital effects coming in for the first time.

So it was like there was this magic unfolding where you couldn’t see the strings. We didn’t yet know how they were doing all this stuff and that kind of wonder, I became utterly infected by it, and I think to this day that big classic nostalgic essence of cinematic sumptuousness. That’s what inspires me the most.

Culturess: You filmed on all seven continents. When you’re creating the story, is it intentional to go to all these places, or does the narrative just lead you there?

Taron Lexton: So I knew we were going over the last few years, okay what’s our next feature? I knew that travel was something that just inspired me. It was also something that for my whole team, it was something we felt passionately about, we loved. It was funny. The story just kind of dropped out of the sky. It kind of dropped fully formed into my mind. I remember I was actually on an airplane to Singapore, and there was just something about going to a new place I haven’t been, and I was so excited, and I was just sort of was like, what if this was the movie? What if it was this sort of wonder? This sort of mystery. This intrigue of going to a new place but taken to a new level.

It really came down to, and not to blow the plot of the movie, but what if you had the power to go anywhere, but what if you couldn’t control it? That was the fundamental question. So if you could be anywhere in an instant, but if you weren’t in control of that power. That idea unfolding with a character and then a life, a whole situation, and then a story. That’s really what this is. Well, what if you could just be anywhere? But what if you didn’t know where it was gonna be?

Culturess: That is a very interesting question for someone.

Taron Lexton: I think a lot of movies have really explored the teleportation or the idea of having the power to go or jump. Jumper was a great movie. But to me, cinematically and dramatically, all problems are solved. It’s hard for people like that to have problems. It’s like to give Superman a problem is kinda hard. But the moment that it’s a condition rather than a power, it suddenly gets a lot more interesting.

For those wishing to travel, Taron

Opening statements in Kevin Spacey‘s new court case have begun, with prosecutors labeling the actor as a “sexual bully” that “delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable.”

Kevin Spacey’s latest court case opened this week

In a report on the court proceedings by Deadline, Spacey was once again accused of a variety of actrs of sexual assault, with prosecutor Christine Agnew KC noting that Spacey has previously grabbed “aggressively other men in the crotch,” as well as a litany of other acts.

In total, Spacey has 12 charges against him, including sexual assault and indecent assault, with different charges alleged to have occurred in a range from 2001 all the way to 2013.

“None of the men wanted to be touched by Kevin Spacey Fowler in a sexual way but he doesn’t seem to have cared very much for their feelings,” said Agnew in her statements to open the case. “He did what he wanted to do for his own personal sexual gratification. What does the defendant say in answer to these allegations? Well, in relation to some he suggests that they are quite simply made up. In relation to others, he accepts that there was a sexual encounter between him and the other man but asserts that anything that took place would have taken place with the consent of the other man.”

While Spacey has denied all allegations, he also said that, due to the charges, he thinks people are “afraid” to support him.

Last year, a New York jury found that Spacey did not sexually assault actor Antony Rapp, who first came forward against Spacey in 2017. Spacey says the results in London should be similar to those in New York.

“The moment scrutiny is applied, these things fall apart,” Spacey said. “That’s what happened in the Rapp trial, and that’s what will happen in this case.”

Once heralded as a legendary actor, Spacey’s career came to a screeching halt in 2017 when he was accused of making sexual advances on then-14-year-old Anthony Rapp (an actor who appeared in a Broadway show with Spacey) in 1986. More allegations came forward following that, leading to Netflix cutting ties with Spacey on their planned film Gore, as well as removing him from the final season of the series House of Cards.

Love stories, period dramas, the origins of sneakers and an explosion of multiverses are among the standout movies from the first half of 2023 that could have the legs to make it to next year’s Oscar ceremony.

As we enter the midpoint of the calendar year, we turn our attention to which films seem worthy of Academy recognition, based on critical acclaim and buzz surrounding contenders. The list considers films that have had theatrical releases and standouts in 19 of the 23 Oscar categories.

Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Oscars predictions in all categories.

Of the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2023 so far, the animated spectacle “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” from Sony Pictures (currently sitting in the third spot with $319 million) has the best shot at reaching the coveted best picture lineup. Other massive money-earners from the list could have potential in various artisan categories such as makeup and hairstyling (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”), sound (“John Wick: Chapter 4”), visual effects (“The Little Mermaid”) and original song (“The Super Mario Bros. Movie”).

Not that anyone should be surprised anymore, but the animated sector has been on fire for the past few years with innovative techniques and supreme stories. Aside from “Across the Spider-Verse” in all eligible categories (and that includes directing, adapted screenplay, production design, film editing, sound, visual effects and score), Netflix has a charmer on its hands with “Nimona,” which seems destined for one of the five animated feature slots if it can sustain attention for the next several months.

PIXAR

Pixar’s “Elemental” didn’t blow away the box office, but the reviews are nonetheless pretty solid. However, as the year continues with more releases, such as its Walt Disney Animation counterpart “Wish” or the upcoming “How Do You Live” from legend Hayao Miyazaki, it could move down the charts as more discoveries are made.

Another streaming contender is Ben Affleck’s highly-entertaining “Air” from Amazon Studios, in which he stars alongside acting pal Matt Damon. A solid box office (across more than 3,000 theaters) and very good notices from critics should keep it in the discussion for a while and it could be one of the safe and most straightforward picks among voters.

With the Academy announcing a focus on expanding theatrical releases beginning with the 2025 ceremony, all eyes are on the indie studios, with many rooting for their successes as they continue to find the best way to navigate this difficult time for theater chains. A24’s “Past Lives” from debut director Celine Song is the clear darling of the indie scene so far after its Sundance premiere. Now in theaters, it has the goods to be an all-around awards player at the end of the year.

Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” from Focus Features has had a strong start on its theatrical run. However, despite a starry cast (Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, etc.), the auteur’s foray into a science fiction-esque theme seems to be falling in line with his previous effort “The French Dispatch” (2021), which was shut out of the Oscar race. I’d say “City” will contend for a tech nom or two, but not much else, but you can never really be sure.

We should give a nod of acknowledgment to movies that debuted at film festivals but are opening later in 2023, such as Cannes standouts like Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” Todd Haynes’ “May December” and the Palme d’Or winning “Anatomy of a Fall” from Justine Triet — and Sundance players like — Sony Pictures Classics’ “A Little Prayer,” Netflix’s “Fair Play” and Apple’s “Flora and Son.” We’ll likely hear more about them in the coming months.

Read the list of probable contenders below in each of the 19 respective Oscar categories. Please note, to offer an opportunity to name more films, a movie is only mentioned once as a top highlight, even though it could be contending in several races.

** Not all listed crew members are official. The Academy ultimately decides on credits.

Tiny Engines, the North Carolina-based record label that gained a following for its indie rock roster in the 2010s, has relaunched under a “new management structure.” After originally going on hiatus following an accounting-related controversy in late 2019, it’s back with a few changes.

Will Miller, previously a co-owner with Chuck Daley, has returned as the sole owner of Tiny Engines. The label’s accounting is “up to date” and artists have been paid in full. According to a statement, 80% of the label’s masters ownership contracts are now licensing contracts, and the remaining 20% will be completed by the end of the year. As a result, masters will now be owned by the artists.

“After leaving the day-to-day operations of Tiny Engines at the beginning of 2020, I was excited to come home last year to revive the label and return to our roots,” Miller said in a statement. “I am committed to making sure artists and their records are being cared for properly and treated with the required respect. I also want to ensure that artists are being paid what they are owed.” Read his full statement below.

Co-founded in 2008 by Miller and Daley, Tiny Engines rose to fame by releasing records by then-up-and-coming acts like Illuminati Hotties, Mannequin Pussy, Spirit of the Beehive, the Hotelier, Wild Pink, and Strange Ranger, among others. In November 2019, Stevie Knipe of Adult Mom accused the label of bad accounting practices such as missed royalty payments, withholding control of master recordings, and more. Other artists on their roster shared similar statements about their own experiences.

At the start of 2020, Daley admitted to “years of delayed payments and accounting statements” in an interview with Billboard. Miller left the label, citing differences in vision with Daley, and started a new label called Sound As Language. Tiny Engines stopped releasing new music and began resolving issues with its artists, starting with giving Adult Mom ownership of their masters. Other artists bought out their contracts, like Illuminati Hotties’ Sarah Tudzin who chose to release a mixtape to fulfill her exit deal stipulations.

Read Tiny Engine owner Will Miller’s full statement:

After leaving the day-to-day operations of Tiny Engines at the beginning of 2020, I was excited to come home last year to revive the label and return to our roots.

When the opportunity arose for me to acquire sole ownership of Tiny Engines the prospect of restoring the label was something I felt a responsibility to pursue. I am committed to making sure artists and their records are being cared for properly and treated with the required respect. I also want to ensure that artists are being paid what they are owed. I have spent the last year plus making sure all of this happens going forward.

To the artists and fans of the label, I am deeply sorry that it took so long to get to this point but we are finally here. We will work hard to reestablish Tiny Engines and be a positive force moving forward.

You the fan owe us nothing. We will seek to regain your trust in our actions as a label and in how we treat our artists. If you do not want to support Tiny Engines please continue to support the artists in any way you can.

Thank you.

Tiny Engines, the North Carolina-based record label

Ravindra Parameshwarappa makes his directorial debut with the epic crime thriller Yellow Gangs, which he co-wrote with Praveen Kumar G. The opening credits have a pulpy comic book vibe, which perfectly encapsulates the gritty, grimy lives of the large number of characters followed. Is this style and intensity something the first-time filmmaker can keep up throughout the 133-minute runtime?

The Kannada-language film begins proper on a drug deal. By all accounts, it goes as smoothly as possible. Money is exchanged, drugs are put into the jeep, and off all parties go. Unfortunately, the criminals driving the jeep use the yellow powder and almost cause a few accidents. Well, in order to avoid a head-on collision, they veer off the road, ramming into a wall. The other driver checks on them only to discover they’re dead. This person just so happens to be a police detective. News of this does not sit well with the drug lord Ushna (Arun Kumar). He gets his two lackeys, Prabhu (Natya Ranga) and Seena (Vittal Rangayana), to figure out how to get his product back.

Meanwhile, corrupt officer Vikram (Dev Devaiah) must deal with the demands of Ushna and the pressures from his higher-ups. This is intertwined with his chaotic personal life, as his girlfriend, Priya (Archana Kottige), cannot marry a cop no matter how much she loves him. Then there’s the accountant (Sriharsha H.S.), whose home is being used as a drug hideaway. Of course, all this captures the attention of rival gangs, who think this might be their chance to gain the upper hand.

“…corrupt officer Vikram must deal with the demands of Ushna and the pressures from his higher-ups.”

Yellow Gangs is epic and engaging, though some subplots go nowhere. Prabhu and Seena figure out how to use a nearby jewelry store to break into the police station. This is soon left behind in favor of a carjacking thread that abruptly enters the picture. There’s also not enough with the detective, who was a (small) part of the beginning accident.

Still, Parameshwarappa directs with energy and flair. The various chases and shootouts, which mainly take place at the end, are exciting. Plus, the characters are interesting. Seena just naps everywhere (narcolepsy is never mentioned, so it’s not that) but also remembers everything. This adds humor without breaking the high-stakes game of life or death everyone is playing. Priya is so determined and intelligent that it is satisfying when she reveals things even Vikram doesn’t know.

Of course, it helps that the cast is outstanding. Devaiah plays his character as quite conflicted, giving dimension to a somewhat standard part. Kumar is menacing, while Ranga and Rangayana play off each other perfectly. Kottige is effortlessly charming, stealing the entire movie from every other actor. Whenever she appears, the screen just lights up.

Yellow Gangs does not follow through on all of its subplots, meaning the runtime does feel a bit long. But the direction is kinetic and keeps the momentum steady for the most part. The cast is good, especially Priya is so enchanting that all of her actions make total sense.

Forty-eight people celebrated their first Canada Day

“Jack Ryan” is back for a fourth and final season. Jack who is now the CIA’s Deputy Director finds himself having to face the fallout of the previous season, as well as the actions of the former CIA director which leads to him uncovering a conspiracy within the CIA. This season introduces two new key characters, Domingo Chavez played by Michael Peña and Chao Fah played by Louis Ozawa.

Recap of Season 3 Finale

The season opens in Shan State, Myanmar, where key parts of the series takes place. Season 4 starts on a very suspenseful and promising note that is enough to get fans hooked in just a few seconds. We see someone with a hood covering their face dragged into a building and then strung up. Once the hood is removed, we see it’s Jack, he is badly injured and is being tortured.

We then cut to Three weeks earlier in Lagos, Nigeria where a team of four mercenaries infiltrate what appears to be a civilian residence, after making it upstairs they then shoot a man in his bed, who we soon find out was the Nigerian President, Udo. One of the men takes a photo for proof. We do not see who the men are but we do see who their man behind the chair is, after handling the operations for the mission, he then leaves the mercenaries to be captured. The man behind the operation, who is using a fake name Bill Tuttle then walks out of a shared office building and calls Mr Chao Fah in Myanmar to confirm the hit.

Thanks to the events in Lagos, the US President Bachler asks to speak with Acting Director Elizabeth Wright and Acting Deputy Director Jack Ryan for a briefing. Jack makes it clear that although thry don’t know enough, they did not authorize this operation and the men who conducted it were not CIA, although the weaponry recovered from the scene does belong to them. According to Jack they have captured one of the assassins. The president makes it clear that anything that former Director Miller did is now on them (This becomes much clearer down the line).

We now move to Yucatan, Mexico, where Domingo Chavez is waiting for us. We find Chavez in a church, after a few moments, he picks up a wooden box and heads to a party, there he finds a man named Emilio, the head of the Perez Cartel. Later on we see him carrying that box to the head of the Marquez Cartel. Inside we see Emilio’s severed hands. Now they are the last standing cartel in Mexico. We see the head of the Cartel do the same as with Udoh and take photographic evidence to send as we will soon find out, to Chao Fah.

At the Senate hearing following president Udoh’s death, Jack is questioned about the CIA’s involvement, Jack’s integrity is called into question when they bring up Ryan’s mission in Russia from season 3 as well as the fact that he went rogue, Senator Jennings repeatedly goes after Jack about Russia, saying that “You may appear to be our saving grace, when you may in fact be part of the problem.”

Rodrigo Marin, Chavez’s cousin and Marquez’s right-hand man, congratulates Chavez for his good work. When Chavez asks why the picture, his cousin tells him that Emilio’s hands hold the keys to Asia. To the Silver Lotus Triad. He explains what their plans for the partnership looks like, how their shared networks with the Triad can be leveraged to open the floodgates of the world for them and what it can bring. He also mentions that they will be arriving soon to meet them.

We see Jack arrive at his apartment where Cathy Mueller played by Abbie Cornish, his old flame who we last saw in Season 1 is back in the picture. Jack and Cathy are back together, we see them sit down for dinner to help get Jack’s mind off the terrible day he’s had, Cathy reminds him if he hadn’t done what he did in Russia, he wouldn’t have a home to protect. She tells Jack “Nothing but Vipers beyond these walls”, which is a very profound heavy line. Their dinner is soon interrupted by Greer. Once Cathy leaves Jack and Greer start talking about recent events and most importantly about Miller. Greer tells Jack that Miller used to muddy every file into a type of code so that it was deniable at best unreadable at worst. Which meant many unauthorized hits were sanctioned. Luckily for Jack, Greer does know how to read the files.

At the Wukong Palace Casino in Shan State, we see Fah enter an office, on the desk is a picture of his wife and daughter, he then changes the sim card on his phone from a case of sims that he has, once he does he receives the picture of Emilio’s hands. He then immediately decides to head to Mexico with his bodyguard who we find out is also his son.

Chavez goes to see Lieutenant Morales, who is on the Cartel’s payroll. He tells Chavez that the police know a shipment is coming and they know the Cartel isn’t as strong as they were. Chavez asks him how much he wants, Morales asks for double his amount, Chavez says it’ll be done but warns him he’d kill him if he didn’t stay in his place.

Chao Fah’s son worries as to why they have to go to Mexico, Fah makes it clear that he needs to look Marquez in the eye to see what kind of man he is. He says with their business changing they have to change too. In order to keep their mother and sister safe.

Meanwhile, back in the states Greer and Ryan are sifting through the mess Miller left behind by going through the encrypted files in his office. They find nine operations with no evidence they even exist. Later on Wright is woken up in the middle of the night by a phone call, Jack tells her that they’ve narrowed it down to nine operations, but it’s impossible to decipher them, and if they have any chance at stopping the people behind Lagos, he’s going to shut them all down and cut off the money. Wright agrees.

We then see Greer visit his family for a dinner in an efforts to mend fences. He hasn’t been home or seen his kids for a long time. Greer and Jasmine have a long way to go before they can fully mend they’re relationship, but like he told Jack, do the work.

Back in Mexico, we see Chavez getting a group of his men ready for the meeting with Chao Fah. Chavez has already planned to abduct Chao with his team of mercenaries. Rodrigo Marin isn’t happy that Chavez has changed the plan, which originally included Marquez himself going to meet Chao at the dock, but now, Marin will be going on his behalf and then Chao will be taken to Marquez. Chavez warns him that the original plan would have made Marquez look weak.

Courtesy of Prime Video

Chao and his entourage arrive in Mexico. He gets a look at the Cartel’s drug business. They will be providing pure ingredients to the Mexicans to use in their drugs and other products. Meanwhile Morales sees his bank account has been deactivated and Chavez hasn’t deposited the money. Fah then heads to the docks for the meeting. Chao’s sun is not too pleased at the fact that plans have changed, but Chao agrees to go with Chavez to meet Marquez. However they are soon interrupted by the sound of the police, no doubt sent by an enraged Morales. Things quickly escalate resulting in a shootout between the two gangs and the police, Chavez tries to get his hands on Chao but he slips away.

For a brief moment we see Chao’s wife and daughter about to board a plane in Myanmar, until they suddenly receive a text from him saying “Stay put. Change of plans” a key point to remember for the next episode.

After the Nigeria Foundation Gala which Jack and Elizabeth were invited too, where Elizabeth meets philanthropist Zeyara Lemos who also knows Cathy and Nigerian lobbyist Osoji. Ryan and Cathy head home, the episode ends on a cliffhanger, we see Jack open and close his fridge ND behind it, is Chavez himself, he points a gun to Jack’s head asking him to “Turn Pluto back on”, despite Jack denying any knowledge of it, he goes on to say he has 24 hours to do so. This confirms Jack’s suspicion that it was in fact one of Miller’s missions that Ryan shut down that lead to the death of president Udoh.

Season 4 kicks off in an intense and exciting fashion. This first episode sets the precedent for what is about to come in the rest of the season by perfectly building up each aspect of the story, as well as each character’s arc.

Courtesy of Prime Video

Michael Peña’s performance is absolutely incredible. So intense, powerful and aggressive with a stoick personality. He has completely disappeared into the role of Chavez. He immediately establishes himself as a lead character. Theres a lot of mystery surrounding him, and this character has established that he has both a brutal and an emotional side.

For the final season of Jack Ryan, we wanted them to go all out, and they have, the plot of this season is an exciting conspiracy mixed with some good old fashioned terrorist and Triad chasing. The first episode sets up a broader Jack Ryan universe which will make the adventures ahead all the more interesting.

"Jack Ryan" is back for a fourth

In episode 2, Jack digs deeper into Miller’s dirty operations and we learn more about Chavez. Back in Myanmar, Chao must navigate the tension in the compound to keep his family safe.

While the previous seasons have seen Jack globetrotting to fight his enemy, this season is much more dangerous for our Analysts turned Deputy Director as he doesn’t even know what the enemy looks like, they could be everywhere. Jack means business this season as he seeks out the person responsible for project Pluto with the help of an unlikely ally, only to discover things were far worse than he had realized.

Read the recap of Season 4 Episode 1 here.

When we last left Jack, Chavez had a gun pointed to his head, he instructed him to turn Project Pluto back on after Jack found 9 of Miller’s old unsactioned operations and turned them all off in order to weed out the people behind the president of Nigeria’s death, and clearly it worked.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR JACK RYAN SEASON 4 EPISODE 2

Episode 2 begins with Jack somewhat nervously walking down the hall at the CIA, he then enlists the help of an IT specialist to investigate Project Pluto. Once they access the CIA’s classified files, he sees that there is one agent still active who ties to every mission, Chavez. He then asks for every bit of information they have on him.

Meanwhile in Myanmar, Chao and his son finally make it home, he visits Tin Tun, and updates him about what just happened. It’s clear from their conversation that Miller was their middle man. Tun wants Chao to contact the Mexicans, but he says he wants to be qith his family first. The two go on to have an intense conversation about Chao’s place in all this and how he got there, because as it is soon revealed, Tun’s family sold off the operation to Chao’s family. That is why he does not respect the former head of the Triad or heed his advice.

Another amazing talent from this season is Louis Ozawa as Chao Fah. The refined and intense head of operations of the Silver Lotus Triad, who has to wear not one but two faces. As we soon learn there’s a lot more to him than meets the eye.

Chao is reunited with his wife and young daughter Bannu, he tells her that she mistook going to the airport, that it was just a dream, and if anyone asks where they went, she should say they went to the doctor. Later on we see Chao head to the Doctor in the area himself, in order to get him to corroborate his story. It’s clear that he’s a very respected and feared man. He tells, or more accurately threatens the doctor to make sure there is evidence of Bannu visiting him and if anyone should come asking, he should say so.

Jack meets with Chavez, now armed with new intelligence on him. He tells him the money from operation Pluto is gone. From Chavez’s profile Jack can tell he’s not the kind of person who would pull a gun on him, but he is one of the deadliest operators in the CIA. Jack asks him about Miller, but Chavez admits he’s never had any interactions with him directly, his team was run by someone name Walters, aka Agent Tuttle from the start of episode 1. Jack then asks him for his help in uncovering how deep Miller’s corruption goes.

Courtesy of Prime

We then see the two at a restaurant in D.C, Chavez opens up to Jack about everything he knows. He first tells him about Chao Fa Sein, then goes on to tell Jack that he embedded himself into the Marquez Cartel through his cousin, which makes it clear that he was working undercover this whole time. He explains how he was told to carry out Marquez’s wishes, which were actually Chao’s all along. His entire operation was controlled by the Triad, and Miller was in their pockets. In a brutally emotional moment, Jack asks Chavez what he thought he was doing in all his past operations, he simply replies, “I thought I was helping”. The two now hatch a plan to get to Miller.

We then see Greer approach Miller at a bar, after a brief conversation, Greer brings up Pluto, which causes Miller to leave. . But as soon as he hears the name, Miller leaves. We then see another familiar face, Mike November played by Michael Kelly. As always, Jack calls his friend in need of help, what exactly, we don’t know yet. Miller has now called Tuttle to warn him that Jack and Greer are looking into Pluto.

Courtesy of Prime

When Miller gets home, he calls Chao who is enraged at him, he mentions that the Triad thinks what happened at the docks was his fault since he is supposed to handle the money. This is when Miller first mentions Jack Ryan to Chao, alerting him that he is the one that pulled the plug. He also tells him Chavez has gone dark, and he has no idea if he is even still alive, as he mentions this we see Chavez emerge from the dark simply saying “I am”. We learn a lot about Chavez in this scene, as he pulls out 7 Military dog tags and slams them on the table in front of Miller, and confronts him for killing his men, his brothers in his operations. He then continues to threaten Miller telling him to contact Jack and tell him everything. As soon as he leaves he sends a text to Tuttle saying “Jack Ryan. Official.”

After having avoided her, Jack finally tells Elizabeth about what is going on, she immediately says they need to tell President Bachler. Jack then goes on to update the The President on everything that has happened since Chavez put a gun to Jack’s head. That Chavez is CIA Black Ops, and that Operation Pluto involved Miller directly. Jack goes on to explain how the former director is an asset for Myanmar’s Silver Lotus Triad and that he was manipulating Chavez and his black ops team to eliminate the Triad’s competition and to consolidate power for Marquez in order to use the Cartel’s infrastructure. What they have planned is far worse than Jack and Elizabeth had first imagined. As Elizabeth says it’s called Convergence. “The fusing of a drug cartel with a terrorist organization. Unlimited resources paired with undying hatred.” says Jack. Their goal is to create an open market with their resources where they can move anything, humans, weapons, suicide bombers and more. Jack tells the president he wants to try and turn Miller into an asset for them, but if what happened in Mexico is traced back to him, Operation Pluto would be blamed on Jack. He promises to take the fall if anyone tries to blame director Wright.

When Jack has left, Elizabeth assures Bachler that they can trust Jack to handle the situation. He then tells her to go to Lagos and personally meet with President Okoli as a prominent warlord is accusing the US of killing President Udoh. She invites Osoji whom she met in episode 1, to come with her as her advisor.

Miller sets a meeting with Jack in the park at night. Later on we see Elizabeth making a moving speech about the CIA’s mission and dedication to the American People at her confirmation ceremony as Director of the CIA. Elizabeth’s speech is edited to voice over certain parts of the next few scenes, which makes for a really well intense and a haunting ambience.

When Jack and Miller meet, Miller asks Jack the same thing that Chavez did, to turn Pluto back on, when Jack says no, he asks who Walters is. Millers tells Jack in a roundabout way, he has no idea what he’s done or who he’s dealing with. Miller reprimands Ryan for turning off the project without asking him, when Jack asks him how high this goes, Miller scoffs and says he has the highest level of protection. Cut to Greer who is in a car recording their conversation. Just like Chavez, Miller believes he was doing the right thing. Ryan asks him to put him in contact with the person in charge, but Miller knows they’d both be dead if he made that call. Just like Jack knows he’ll never turn on the projects again. When Jack makes the point that they’re probably being watched then and there, Miller takes off running.

Miller races home, little does he know he’s being followed. Tuttle ties his hands behind his back and makes him swallow a handful of pills and then pours some whiskey down his throat making it look like an overdose. Chavez reaches the house too late but just in time to see Miller grab the Bible on his desk and then fall to the floor. Which may include a clue inside. When Jack and Greer show up, Chavez says the others are gonna come for him, thinking this was his doing.

The first two episodes of Jack Ryan Season 4 do a great job of setting up this plot. Season 4 will only have 6 episodes unlike the usual 8, and the writers have made sure to pack each episode with as much thrilling storytelling as they can. The Convergence plot is a big one, so taking the time set it up during the last 2 episodes was a smart choice as there is a lot that was covered, and now that the intro is out of the way, it’s time to get into the action.

Only 2 episodes in and already Jack Ryan is bringing the intensity, the suspense, the emotions and the thrills.

“Jack Ryan” is now streaming on Prime Video.

The Apple TV+ series High Desert will not be returning for a second season, according to show lead Patricia Arquette.

The actress, who starred as Peggy, took to Instagram on Saturday to share the news in a video, with the caption, “It stinks.”

“A lot of you have asked about High Desert and if there was going to be a second season, so I just wanted to let you know that we just found out that we won’t be coming back,” Arquette said. “That’s a sad bummer for all of us.”

She went on to express her appreciation for the show’s writers, actors and the entire crew. “We just had a blast,” she added. “Thanks to you guys for watching. You can’t win them all.”

The comedy follows Peggy, a former addict, who decides to start a new life after the death of her mother and becomes a private investigator. The series also stars Brad Garrett, Weruche Opia, Bernadette Peters, Rupert Friend and Matt Dillon.

Ben Stiller, who served as an executive producer on the series, also wrote on Twitter, “We are all disappointed. Our entire #HighDesert cast was amazing and to all our fans, thank you for embracing this show.”

“I LOVE Patricia Arquette, who gave an awards worthy performance,” he continued. “While we wish @AppleTV had stuck with it, we’re grateful they made it and it is on the service. And unlike other streamers these days I’m told they will not be removing any shows. So you can enjoy the first season in perpetuity. And feel free to let them know you want more!!”

High Desert, which aired its season one finale on June 21, was created by Nancy Fichman, Katie Ford and Jennifer Hoppe.

Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted a bloodier and deadlier Terminator 2: Judgment Day but James Cameron shot him down.

During a panel at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures ahead of a screening of the Terminator sequel, Schwarzenegger said that his rivalry with fellow action star Sylvester Stallone pushed him to want a much different kind of film.

“The reason why it became a big hit was, number one, Jim Cameron. Jim Cameron is a genius writer,” Schwarzenegger said. “He came up with this brilliant idea, even though at the beginning I was suspicious. He said ‘I want to make you a good Terminator.’”

He continued, “I said ‘What do you mean a good Terminator?’ I was killing 68 people in the first one. In the second one I have to kill 150. We go up! Cut their throats and shoot them with a cannon and run them over with a car.’ I had to outdo Stallone. I said that my whole mission was being number one at killing amounts of people on screen.”

However, Cameron already had an idea of what he wanted for Terminator 2 and shot down Schwarzenegger’s suggestion.

“He said ‘Arnold, stop it. You’re a very sick guy. I am gonna make sure that in Terminator 2, you’re not gonna kill one single person,’” Schwarzenegger recalled. “I said that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. How can this be Terminator 2 without me killing anyone? At least throw a few token bodies in there.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted a bloodier and deadlier

We’re well aware of what actors have to go through to get their bodies to fit the image that the producers want. With superhero movies in their heydey right now, we’re constantly seeing actors take to the screen with bulging muscles and seemingly no body fat whatsoever.

The intense diet and training regimes, however, are not good for you, and Channing Tatum has spoken about how horrible it can be to undergo these transformations. In fact, the condition of getting his body into that shape was largely the reason that he didn’t want to make a third Magic Mike movie.

He spoke about the process: “It’s hard to look like that. Even if you do work out, to be that kind of in shape is not natural. That’s not even healthy. You have to starve yourself. I don’t think when you’re that lean, it’s actually healthy.”

Indeed, when you hear about other actors’ training programmes, it sounds far from healthy. In preparation for Logan, Hugh Jackman would drink three gallons of water in the days before filming, and then for the 36 hours before the shoot, he would drink nothing at all. Speaking about this preparation the actor said:

“Don’t do this at home. Yeah, don’t. Dehydration can cause kidney damage, as well as cramping, heat exhaustion, and potentially heatstroke, especially if it occurs during workouts.”

When people think of Maria Hill, three names come up: Nick Fury Sr., S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Avengers. Maria was Fury Sr.’s second-in-command when she was in S.H.I.E.L.D., but over time, their relationship became strained. (She had a less fraught relationship with his son, Nick Fury Jr..) S.H.I.E.L.D. brought out the best—and the worst—in Maria, and her service left a major impact on her life. The Avengers, ironically, didn’t start off as her favorite people, but Maria came to understand why they were needed in the world.

WHO ARE MARIA’S ALLIES?

Dum Dum Dugan, who worked with Fury Sr. as part of the Howling Commandos, was Maria’s second-in-command when she was in S.H.I.E.L.D.. Black Widow: Natasha Romanoff also held a mutual respect and trust for the former director, which spoke volumes given Nat’s significant trust issues. As previously mentioned, she earned Tony Stark’s respect when facing The Collective, but they also worked at S.H.I.E.L.D. together and were both pro-registration during the Superhuman Civil War. Speaking of; it didn’t seem that she would befriend Steve Rogers due to their opposing ideologies, but Rogers would grow to trust her, to the point of choosing Maria to lead the Avengers during his first run as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D..

The shapeshifting alien Skrulls have been around the Marvel Comics universe since the very early days. In both the comic book series Secret Invasion and its MCU namesake, the Skrulls have replaced key people associated with the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the X-Men. And that leads many to wonder, just who has been a Skrull in Marvel’s world? Well, it turns out, quite a few characters. Here are some of the most important Marvel characters who Skrull agents replaced over the years, some almost two decades before the Secret Invasion comics.

Alicia Masters Was a Skrull

Marvel Comics

One of the first major Marvel Comics characters a Skrull replaced was Alicia Masters. Marvel introduced the blind sculptor as Ben Grimm’s, a.k.a. the Thing, girlfriend in Fantastic Four. Alicia was his main squeeze for decades, until Thing decided to live on another planet after the first Secret Wars. With the Thing gone, and likely never to return, Alicia fell in love with his Fantastic Four teammate Johnny Storm and married him. When Ben Grimm returned, let’s just say he was not happy. Fans didn’t love it either.

But years later, Marvel revealed that the Alicia Masters who met and fell in love with Johnny was actually a Skrull agent in disguise, meant to infiltrate the Fantastic Four and destroy them from within. Meanwhile, the Skrull Empire kept the real Alicia Masters in captivity. The Skrull imposter’s true name was Llya, and although a Skrull agent, she really did fall in love with the Human Torch. Eventually, Llya was exposed as an alien Skrull, and an enraged Johnny left her. Marvel Comics returned the real Alicia to Earth. Years later, she eventually married the Thing, Benjamin J. Grimm.

Captain America’s Time as a Skrull in Marvel Comics

The Skrull who impersonated the Marvel Comics character Captain America, Steve Rogers.
Marvel Comics

Years before the Secret Invasion comics mini-series, Marvel replaced Steve Rogers with a Skrull. In a 1998 storyline in Captain America from writer Mark Waid and penciler Dale Eaglesham, the Skrulls captured Captain America and impersonated him with one of their own. Their plan was to have Skrull Captain America expose two of his companions as Skrulls live on TV, hoping it would send the human population of Earth into prolonged paranoia, turning neighbor against neighbor. The plan very nearly worked, as Steve Rogers was perhaps Earth’s most trusted hero. But with the help of the Avengers, the real Captain America returned and exposed the Skrull plot.

Wolverine Became a Skrull in the ’90s

The dead body of Wolverine, who then reverted to Skrull form, revealing it as an imposter.
Marvel Comics

Another late ‘90s Skrull infiltration plot occurred when they revealed the X-Men’s Wolverine as a Skrull. In a twist, the Skrulls were actually working for the X-Men’s longtime enemy, Apocalypse. He needed a new Hoseman of Death, especially as his previous Death, better known as Archangel, had reverted to being a good guy. So Apocalypse chose the character of Logan and replaced Wolverine with a Skrull imposter in the world of Marvel. His fellow X-Men went unsuspecting for months, even the psychics like Professor X. This fake Wolverine had implanted memories and didn’t even know he wasn’t the real Marvel Comics’ Logan but a Skrull version. He heroically died in battle with Death, who was eventually freed from Apocalypse’s thrall and became good ol’ Logan again. The Skrull Wolverine actually made his debut in a Punisher/Wolverine crossover.

Elektra’s Skrull Reveal Began Marvel Comics’ Secret Invasion Series

Assassin Elektra, and her dead Skrull duplicate. The Marvel character of Elektra was replaced by a Skrull.
Marvel Comics

The truth of the Skrull threat to Marvel’s heroes began in earnest when the ninja assassin Elektra was the first of several heroes exposed as a Skrull. This reveal happened in 2007’s New Avengers #31, by writer Brian Michael Bendis and penciler Leinil Francis Yu. Echo killed Elektra in battle, and upon death, Elektra was revealed to be a Skrull, shocking everyone. Marvel Comics then revealed that Skrulls replaced the true Elektra several months prior, and that the Skrull who impersonated her was meant to die. Marvel designed the Skrull infiltration to be revealed to the Avengers as a way of creating suspicion among the heroic community. The real Elektra would return, of course, but the death of the Skrull impersonator would kick off the Secret Invasion event series.

Skrull Black Bolt Attacked Marvel’s Illuminati

Marvel Comics

With the Skrull Elektra exposed, Iron Man brought her corpse to the rest of his compatriots in the Illuminati. He hoped this would spur his fellow Marvel Universe power players to treat the Skrull threat seriously. It was then that Tony Stark learned his fellow Illuminati member Black Bolt, King of the Inhumans, had been a Skrull for months, replacing the real Black Bolt at a time when his brother Maximus assumed the throne of Attilan. Skrull Black Bolt attacked Marvel Comics’ Illuminati, but the Illuminati defeated him with a bit of help. His wife, Queen Medusa, eventually rescued the real Black Bolt.

Skrull Spider-Woman Betrayed the Avengers

Spider-Woman Jessica Drew, and her Skrull counterpart Veranke.
Marvel Comics

Spider-Woman was a prominent Marvel hero in the ‘70s and ‘80s, only to all but vanish for decades, while other heroes took her name and carried on. But the original Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew, returned in 2005 as a member of the New Avengers. But just a few years later, Marvel Comics revealed this Spider-Woman was never the real Jessica Drew at all, she was the Skrull Queen, Veranke. And she was about to commence the Skrull invasion of Earth, fulfilling a prophecy she believed was about Earth becoming a new Skrull Throneworld. Luckily, the real Spider-Woman appeared not long after, and joined the Avengers, but the other members had to work to trust her. After all, the last version of Spider-Woman in their ranks was working against them from the start.

Dr. Hank Pym Was a Skrull for Years in Marvel’s Comics

Marvel Comics

A Skrull agent replaced founding Avenger Hank Pym as well. But during Marvel Comics’ Secret Invasion, Pym revealed that the Skrull had replaced the true Hank after the events of 2004’s Avengers Disassembled. So Skrull Hank was on the team for roughly four years. His purpose was to give his ex-wife Janet Van Dyne, the Wasp, a special growth formula—one that was actually a deadly weapon to be used against the Avengers.

Captain Marvel Returned to Life Only As a Marvel Comics Skrull

Mar-Vell, the original Kree hero Captain Marvel, and his Skrull decoy.
Marvel Comics

The original Captain Marvel, the Kree warrior Mar-Vell, was one of the rare comics heroes to die and stay dead. Marvel chronicled his demise from cancer in the 1982 story The Death of Captain Marvel. Others succeeded him, most recently Carol Danvers, but Mar-Vell stayed dead until 2007’s epic The Return of Captain Marvel, which shocked Marvel Comics fans. Many longtime fans met this grand return of a Silver Age hero with skepticism. Eventually, during Secret Invasion, Marvel revealed this Mar-Vell as a Skrull sleeper agent, and he attacked Marvel’s heroes. Much like Lyja beforehand, he ultimately sacrificed himself as one of the good guys after switching sides. And so, the real Mar-Vell remains dead, 40 years and counting. In comics, that’s got to be a record.

Skrull Mockingbird Caused Some Drama

The Avenger Mockingbird, returning to Earth, this Marvel Comics character was replaced by a Skrull.
Marvel Comics

Heroine Bobbi Morse and her ex-husband Hawkeye were a tumultuous couple. Both heroes, both stubborn—their relationship ultimately ended in divorce. Mockingbird herself died in Avengers West Coast #100. But surprise, that Mockingbird was a Skrull agent. The shape changers held the real Bobbi in captivity, and she finally returned to Earth during the Secret Invasion. Mockingbird was entirely unaware of her “death” and that she and Clint Barton were no longer an item. One big Marvel Comics continuity error with this Skrull takeover was that when Skrull Bobbi died in the ’90s, the character did not revert to Skrull form.

Skrulls Used Doctor Voodoo

Doctor Voodoo, Marvel Comics' sorcerer supreme, this character was replaced by a Skrull.
Marvel Comics

Jericho Drumm, the sorcerer originally called Brother Voodoo (now Doctor Voodoo) eventually became the Sorcerer Supreme. But for a time, he was an advisor to Black Panther in Wakanda. But this version of the good doctor was actually a Skrull agent, meant to infiltrate the ranks of Wakanda’s royal court as a weapon from within. The hope was that incapacitating the most powerful nation on Earth via this character would make the Skrull invasion that much easier in the Marvel universe. This version of Jericho Drumm died once he was revealed, and the real Doctor Voodoo returned.

Nick Fury

Mockingbird confronts the Skrull impersonating Nick Fury in the series Hawkeye & Mockingbird.
Marvel Comics

The Disney+ series Secret Invasion has everyone asking “Is Nick Fury a Skrull?” We don’t know for sure if the Nick Fury we see in the show is or isn’t a Skrull… Although we know Fury became a Skrull in the MCU’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, so we can’t rule it out. Regardless, it does beg the question, was S.H.I.E.L.D director Nicholas J. Fury ever impersonated by a Skrull in Marvel Comics? And the answer is yes, here’s when it happened.

In the comics, in one issue of 2010’s Hawkeye & Mockingbird series, Nick Fury was a Skrull. But only ever so briefly. This Skrull Fury imposter was sent to the Savage Land, where he was tasked with gathering the dead bodies of other Skrulls. Mockingbird and bounty hunter Dominic Fortune went to look into a beacon in an old S.H.I.E.L.D. base. But Mockingbird realized this Nick Fury was nothing more than a Skrull imposter and ended him pretty quickly. We’ll have to see if Secret Invasion brings any new entries to the Fury Skrull ledger.

In a surprising turn of events, AMD has announced a new processor for its aging AM4 platform. The Ryzen 5 5600X3D brings the company’s to a six-core, 12-thread processor. Moreover, AMD plans to sell the CPU for a modest $229, but there’s a catch. The company will only offer the new processor through , a US retailer that, as , doesn’t ship most of what it sells to online shoppers. What’s more, stock of the 5600X3D will be limited, with sales of the CPU to end once Micro Center runs out of supplies.

All of that is a shame because the 5600X3D could be a great upgrade for those looking to extend the life of their AM4 motherboard and get a bit of extra gaming performance. Like the , the 5600X3D trades slower clock speeds and more power consumption for a 96MB L3 cache. With the 5800X3D, that’s a combination of features that makes for a processor that is slower at some tasks, but generally great for gaming. The expanded L3 cache frequently translates to less bottlenecking in games, meaning you can get the most performance possible from your GPU. Moreover, the fact that it’s an AM4 processor means you can save on a new build since you won’t need to go buy DDR5 RAM.

The 5600X3D will go on sale on July 7th.

Taylor Swift experienced a stage malfunction during Friday’s Cincinnati show of her Eras tour. And instead of shaking it off, she ran it off.

In a video shared by a fan at the show, Swift stood on the stage waiting to do her usual dive into a trap door that would lead her backstage between songs. But the door didn’t open.

“I can’t believe I got this,” the fan wrote in the caption for the video posted to TikTok.

In the video, Swift is shown realizing that the door wasn’t going to open. At first, she started walking in the direction of another backstage exit being used by her backup dancers. But then, it must have occurred to her that the show’s timing may be thrown off for the show and she took off running.

“I love how she first goes for a strut and then realized she has to full-blown sprint,” one user wrote.

“The way she’s moving through the dancers,” another person commented on the video, which shows Swift not only catching up with the dancers who were far ahead of her originally, but overtaking them.

Another commenter wrote, “Welcome to the errors tour.”

This certainly isn’t the first snafu Swift has experienced during the shows. For example in Philadelphia, she stopped the show to tell a security guard to leave a fan alone. And in another show, she accidentally swallowed a bug.

Swift’s sixth concert tour, the Eras Tour, began in March of last year and the U.S. leg ends with shows in Los Angeles in mid-August. The length of the concert is the longest of her career, clocking in at just over three hours and including 44 of her songs.

They may not be the best of friends, but Green Lantern still totally owes Wonder Woman for protecting his secret identity. The two served together on the Justice League, becoming staunch allies. That allyship pays off when a rogue politician threatens to expose Hal Jordan to the world and Wonder Woman intervenes, keeping Hal’s secret safe — and Green Lantern is none the wiser.

Hal Jordan is far from the only Green Lantern on Earth, but he is perhaps the best known — and even the all-time greatest. However, by the early 1980s, Hal was beginning to have second thoughts about being a hero and a member of the Green Lantern Corps; that storyline climaxes when Hal temporarily leaves the Corps, leaving John Stewart and Guy Gardner to pick up the slack. While Hal was struggling on a personal level, he was also contending with a very different type of villain: a politician. Representative Jason Bloch became a thorn in Green Lantern’s side, eventually learning his secret identity.

Wonder Woman Always Protects Her Allies

In 1984’s Green Lantern #181 by Len Wein, Dave Gibbons, Mark Farmer, Anthony Tollin, and John Costanza, Bloch’s story comes to an end. After Bloch’s latest attempt to bring down Green Lantern fails, Bloch himself is attacked by a mystery assassin. Bloch then stumbles from his office and collapses in the hallway. A military woman tends to Bloch, and, as he dies, he tells her everything he knows: that Ferris test pilot Hal Jordan is Green Lantern. Bloch implores her to tell the world. The person tending to Bloch is revealed to be Diana Prince, the civilian guise of Wonder Woman. When Steve Trevor asks what Bloch said, Diana replies: “Not a thing Steve. Not a blessed thing.”

At this moment, Wonder Woman keeps Green Lantern’s secret identity just that — a secret. If anyone else had heard Bloch’s final words, they may have actually gone to the media about it. Alternately, they could have held onto that information and sold it to the highest bidder — likely a villain. However, it so happens that the one who finds Bloch knows Hal is Green Lantern, and she, of course, has enough of a moral compass not to expose Hal’s secret. Wonder Woman never tells Hal about the incident either — meaning he has no idea how much he owes her.

Wonder Woman Inadvertently Defeats a Major Green Lantern Threat

Wonder Woman First Tries to Help Green Lantern's Enemy

By keeping Green Lantern’s identity a secret, Wonder Woman deals the death blow to Bloch’s ambitions. He dies in her arms, and she never does what Bloch asked — meaning all that Bloch had tried to accomplish had been for naught. The knowledge that Hal is Green Lantern never goes any further — and it is all thanks to Wonder Woman.
