Hollywood hunk Bradley Cooper, 48, looked as handsome as ever while on a walk in New York City with his daughter, Lea, 5, on Jan. 4. The toddler looked adorable in a lavish pink dress, which she accessorized with on-trend pink Sherpa booties. Lea opted to wear her blonde tresses down, as they flowed behind her while she held her dad’s hand in the streets of the Big Apple. Bradley, for his part, rocked a mauve pink t-shirt, grey pants, and a black beanie while spending time with his little one on Wednesday. In addition, the 48-year-old carried his black jacket (which he removed), along with Lea’s leopard-print coat and pink backpack.

The father-and-daughter outing comes nearly one month after the two stepped out in NYC amid reconciliation speculation between Bradley and model Irina Shayk, 36. During the Dec. 13 outing, Lea wore a green winter coat complete with bright-red leggings. The Hangover actor adorably matched his daughter’s Philadelphia Eagles beanie while he also wore a blue puffer coat and grey jeans on the chilly afternoon stroll.

Bradley and Lea’s mom, Irina, spent the Thanksgiving holiday together and have been rumored to be reconciling their romance in recent months. “Bradley’s very protective of his privacy when it comes to Irina, so the fact that they’re being so public is very significant,” a source close to the duo told HollywoodLife on Nov. 9, 2022. “There’s been chatter about them getting back together for a while now, and everyone’s rooting for them because they’re a good match.”

The reconciliation rumors were magnified on Nov. 4, 2022, when the Russian model posted a sexy carousel of snapshots in a lingerie Halloween costume. Irina was sitting on a person’s lap, who people assumed was Bradley, however, he was disguised in a bear costume. “Bear with me,” she captioned the photos. “Bear’s hands lol,” one follower commented, noting the man’s hands on Irina. Then a fan popped into the comments section to share their hopes for Bradley and the brunette beauty to get back together. “I hope you and brad will back together was a great family with their daughter Lea,” they wrote.

Furthermore, on Nov. 28, 2022, a source told PEOPLE that Irina “hoped” to repair their relationship. “She never enjoyed being single,” the mag’s insider said at the time. “She always hoped they could find a way to make their relationship work again. Even though they always got along and co-parented well, their daughter is the happiest when they are all together.” The director and Irina have been linked to each other since 2015, about two years before they welcomed their beautiful daughter into their lives.

Apple may be the world’s largest company, but it has always had a soft spot for that Disney magic. That’s why Steve Jobs asked Bob Iger to serve on Apple’s board (Iger resigned when Apple officially entered the content business), and why it was eager to work with former Disney and Pixar executive John Lasseter, now at Skydance Animation.

With Apple TV+, the tech giant is taking a page from HBO, ordering fewer TV shows and movies, but aiming for a quality that’s a cut above the rest. But the Apple brand has always been a bit more family-friendly than HBO, and the Disney envy is still apparent. Enter Ricky Strauss. When Disney launched the marketing campaigns for films like Frozen, The Avengers, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Incredibles 2, it turned to Strauss’ team to deliver.

Strauss, a veteran producer, production executive and marketer, had founded Ricochet Media, and later worked as Participant Media’s president, before joining Disney in 2012 to lead marketing for the company’s film studio. He later led marketing and content for the launch of Disney+, an effort that saw the streaming service rocket to nearly 90 million subscribers in just its first year.

Now Apple wants a piece of that marketing magic for itself. The tech giant hired Strauss on Jan. 3 to lead marketing for Apple TV+, a bold hire that suggests Apple is serious about growing its streaming division, and potentially its theatrical film efforts. In streaming, while Apple has promoted Apple TV+ (and offered aggressive free trials to buyers of its products), it has not spent nearly as much time or money marketing the service as its competitors.

With a fresh price hike and with big investments like its Major League Soccer deal on the horizon, Apple clearly believes streaming is a real business, and now Strauss will be the one to sell it to a public that may only know the service for Ted Lasso, or perhaps Oscar winner CODA.

Strauss’ experience marketing blockbusters could be just what the tech giant needs to build off that win. This year will see Apple release Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, star-studded spy thriller Argylle, Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Lasseter’s animated film Spellbound.

It may not be as big a slate as Disney’s or Paramount’s, but it’s stacked with boldface names and titles with the potential to be hits, both in theaters and on streaming. And now the company has hired someone who knows how to sell hits. Apple has already shown a willingness to embrace the big-screen experience, and a commitment to make a bold awards season push, but it is yet to release a film that would qualify as a bona fide blockbuster.

This year’s slate, with Strauss at the helm of those campaigns, could be what it needs to take that next step.

In the latest episode of “Awards Circuit,” presented by HBO, Variety TV editors Michael Schneider and Emily Longeretta singled out a slew of performances that made this year’s hottest television series sparkle, from the likes of Jennifer Coolidge in “The White Lotus” to Zendaya in “Euphoria.”

For the upcoming Golden Globes, in best performance by an actress in a drama, Hilary Swank’s performance in “Alaska Daily” was noted as a surprise nomination because of the show’s broadcast home on ABC edging out the popularity of streaming service shows. Schneider remarked Zendaya’s awards season prowess — already having multiple Emmys to her name for her role as Rue Bennett on the HBO series — gives her a great chance at taking home the win. Additionally, Coolidge’s return in the second season of “The White Lotus,” along with the show’s highly-received finale, will grant Coolidge some serious consideration among voters as well.

In actor in drama, Adam Scott for “Severance,” Kevin Costner for “Yellowstone,” Diego Luna for “Andor” and more are nominated at the Golden Globes. Particular attention was given to Bob Odenkirk for his role in AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” which would be one of the actor’s final chances to receive awards recognition for his performance as the series concluded last summer.

In the musical/comedy category, Donald Glover received a nod for the final season of “Atlanta,” as did Bill Hader for “Barry” along with Steve Martin and Martin Short for “Only Murders in the Building.” Jeremy Allen White was noted as a frontrunner in the category for his performance in FX’s “The Bear,” citing the show’s quick rise in popularity during the summer of 2022 when it released. On the actress front, Jean Smart was marked as the clear frontrunner to win for her role in “Hacks,” while the likes of Jenna Ortega for “Wednesday” and Selena Gomez for “Only Murders in the Building” are also firmly in the mix.

Prince Harry is all set to drop a final bomb on the royal family with his controversial book Spare. Before the release, he is coming up with two interviews on January 08 for promotion. The trailers of his interactions with ITV’s Tom Brady and Anderson Cooper have set the internet on fire. In the short clips, the Duke revealed that the leaking and briefings by the Palace are the main reason behind the Netflix docuseries and memoir.

Prince Harry claimed that he could never show his grievances to the senior members, as they leaked everything in the media. He further added that the royal family planted a lot of fake stories in the press against him and his wife, Meghan Markle. The disputable accusations by the Sussex royal left Jonathan Sacerdoti fuming.

Royal family scared of having a conversation with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

The royal expert Sacerdoti revealed that not the royal family but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are the ones leaking things in the media. He mentioned that King Charles, Prince William, and other senior members are afraid of having complex and emotional discussions with the Sussexes owing to their tie-up with Netflix and Spotify. The UK-based journalist further added that this is the reason behind King Charles and Prince William not making any efforts to get the Sussexes back into the family.

“If anyone’s leaking things, it does seem to come more from Harry and Meghan’s side. So, should the king or the future king have anything to say in private, they’re probably very afraid to because they’re worried that it will just be on Netflix or on Spotify or in a book,” Jonathan Sacerdoti mentioned in his interaction with US Weekly.

Further, the royal expert also slammed Prince Harry for his statement about wanting his father and brother back. Sacerdoti believes that in the past few months, the Duke and Duchess have done everything to alienate themselves from the royal family. He added that the California-based royals can not reconcile by making serious allegations about the family in the public eye.

Sentimental tales about grumpy old men and American decline have, until recently, typically been the domain of Clint Eastwood.

But in “A Man Called Otto,” Marc Forster’s adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s bestseller and a remake of the 2016 Swedish film “A Man Called Ove,” it’s Tom Hanks prowling the neighborhood and irritably grumbling about how things used to be. In the original, Rolf Lassgård richly inhabited the role of Ove, a curmudgeonly widower — a Forrest Grump —whose suicide attempts are foiled by needy neighbors and, ultimately, his grudging, sincere devotion to them.

Exasperation, whether directed at a crying ballplayer or a slobbering canine, has always been squarely in Hanks’ wheelhouse. But despondency or even plain get-off-my-lawn orneriness are less obvious traits possessed by the actor sometimes called “America’s Dad.” Following Hanks’ villainous turn as Col. Tom Parker in “Elvis,” the 66-year-old has found in “A Man Called Otto” another role that interestingly, if not always entirely successfully, caters to his strengths while tweaking his familiar screen presence.

It also may rob “A Man Called Otto,“ which opens with Otto buying rope to hang himself with, of some of its spirit. We know there are dark roads that Hanks just isn’t going to go down, and some of the early, more caustic scenes of Forster’s film strike a false note. But as “A Man Called Otto” makes its way through Otto’s life, cutting between his present-day squabbles and flashbacks of happier times with his wife, Sonya (Rachel Keller), Hanks movingly tailors the role to himself. How ”A Man Called Otto” unfolds won’t surprise anyone, but it does the trick for a little post-holidays heart-warming.

“A Man Called Otto” is set in the prefab row-house development Otto has long lived in, where he tirelessly tisk-tisks any rule breakers, re-sorts misplaced recycling and berates drivers who violate the street’s regulation against through traffic.

Screenwriter David Magee (“Life of Pi,” “Finding Neverland”) hues closely to the Swedish film as a kind of parable of community. Up and down the street are all the people the freshly retired Otto barely tolerates: friends-turned-enemies (Peter Lawson Jones, Juanita Jennings), a friendly exerciser (a delightful Cameron Britton), a transgender paper deliverer and former student of Otto’s wife (Mack Bayda). Most of all there is Marisol (a terrific Mariana Treviño), a pregnant mother of two has just moved in with her husband (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo). Various needs — a stray cat, a borrowed ladder, driving lessons — intrude on Otto’s desires for a peaceful death and, in between aborted suicide attempts, gradually rekindle his will to live.

It’s sometimes too broadly drawn. Mike Birbiglia plays a predatory real estate agent from a company not-so-subtly called Dye & Merica. (“Sounds like Dying America, which it is,” says Otto.) But “A Man Called Otto” is less after realism than it is a modern-day fable, with shades of Scrooge and the Grinch. As a tale of a solitary man, Hanks has made it a poignant work of family. Rita Wilson, his wife, is a producer and is heard singing a song in the film. The younger Otto is played in flashbacks by their son, Truman Hanks. Even Chet Hanks’ “White Boy Summer” blares from a car radio.

Another tune, though, is a more thrilling needle drop. The less said probably the better, but suffice to say, it could be a sign that the Kate Bush renaissance so hearteningly kicked up by “Stranger Things” has not yet abated. If that’s not life-affirming, I don’t know what is.

“A Man Called Otto,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association for mature thematic material involving suicide attempts, and language. Running time: 126 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Dave Bautista says there’s a “relief” to winding down his run as Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Drax as he looks towards more dramatic roles in his future.

In a new GQ profile, the Glass Onion star talks about his career trajectory from the WWE to the big screen, along with his personal acting ambitions. The actor acknowledges he’s in a transition period, one where he closes the door on the MCU franchise and its comedic character that helped launch his acting career and a future in more dramatic work.

“I’m so grateful for Drax. I love him,” the actor said. “But there’s a relief [that it’s over]. It wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy — it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.”

Bautista has portrayed the Kylosian alien for nearly a decade, across multiple movies and the latest Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special for Disney+. Now, the actor is looking towards his turn in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune sequel, which follows their collaboration on the first film as well as Blade Runner 2049. The actor says working with Villeneuve, particularly in a leading role, is one of his goals for a very specific reason.

“If I could be a number one [on the callsheet] with Denis, I would do it for fucking free,” he said. “I think that’s how I could find out how good I could be. He brings out the best in me. He sees me in a different light, sees the performer that I want to be. That might be how I solve the puzzle.”

Bautista’s Glass Onion director supports his star’s ambitions, telling the magazine that the person in Hollywood that gives “Dave a real dramatic lead role in a movie” will ultimately “look like a genius.”

The Dune star revealed that he has already felt shit in the way he’s being viewed among his peers, noting that Javier Bardem, his co-star in the sci-fi epic sequel, already shared a “fucking surreal” moment with Bautista that gave the Guardians star a boost in confidence about his more serious screen ambitions.

The moment happened after Bardem — who had previously done some press with Bautista for the first Dune film — attended an early screening of the Netflix whodunnit, which saw Bautista’s co-star “dancing through the aisles,” according to GQ. “Our conversations after that were different. Which, for me, was fucking everything.”

Those are the kinds of moments Bautista says he’s looking for more of. “I never wanted to be the next Rock,” he explained. “I just want to be a good fucking actor. A respected actor.”

“Honestly, I could give a fuck [about being a movie star],” he added. “I don’t live a great big glamorous life. I live here in Tampa. I don’t care about the spotlight, I don’t care about fame. I just want to be a better actor. I want respect from my peers. I don’t need accolades — I really don’t, man. It’s about the experience, about knowing that I accomplished something.”

All the speculation can be put to an end finally because Stephen Amell has confirmed via Twitter stating “Of course I’m coming back”. He will be returning on The Flash’s final season. Green Arrow is officially back! As to what storyline will be used we don’t know as of yet and unconfirmed. Last time we saw Oliver Queen he was the Spectre in the crossover for Crisis on Infinite Earths and very much dead or a God. He ended up staying in the Paradise Dimension. Felicity then joined him after 20 years in the last episode of Season 8 of Arrow, where she reunited with Oliver thanks to The Monitor leading her there. Joining him will be David Ramsey as John Diggle, Keiynan Lonsdale as Kid Flash and Sendhil Ramamurthy as Bloodwork in episode 909 of The Flash.

Below please find Stephen’s statement via his Twitter and Instagram:

The CW has also put out a statement today: “As soon as our final season was announced, we knew we wanted Stephen to come back and reprise his iconic role as Oliver Queen,” “The Flash” executive producer Eric Wallace said in a statement. “After all, it was Oliver who originally launched Barry Allen on his heroic path. That’s why everyone on Team Flash felt so strongly that it was important to create a full-circle moment with Oliver’s return in the final season of ‘The Flash. “The result is an epic-yet-emotional episode we hope Arrowverse fans will enjoy. It’s all to say “thank you” to everyone for watching and supporting our show throughout nine wonderful years. We absolutely cannot wait for everyone to see Grant and Stephen saving the world together again. And yes, there will be thrills, chills and tears.”

Many took to twitter with confusion and excitement see below tweets:

When was Green Arrow last seen?

The latest comic crossover ended with a significant reveal, as they showed Oliver Queen’s Spectre is seen alive in the year 2049. In a shocking conclusion to the Earth-Prime crossover from DC Comics, the former Green Arrow emerges alongside the Justice League, as it seems that somehow, Queen has returned from his death in The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earth event. The reveal leaves more questions than answers, but the canonical comic ultimately changes the hero’s fate.

In Earth-Prime: Hero’s Twilight #6 by Jeff Hersh, Thomas Pound, Will Robson, Alex Sinclair, and Tom Napolitano by DC Comics, the Arrowverse heroes of 2049 stop the villain Magog and his evil army, as they’re deemed worthy by a shadowy figure. After the battle, Supergirl returns to the Hall of Justice, revealing that Flash, Superman, Black Lightning, and others were watching the young heroes as they were told not to intervene in the test. A mysterious voice responds, saying the trial “pales next to what will be expected of them,” as Oliver Queen’s Spectre, somehow alive, reveals himself, saying they “must be ready” for what’s coming next. How this will all tie into Season 9 of the Flash we don’t know but can’t wait to see what they have planned.

Courtesy of The CW

What will the Flash’s final season be about?

Season 9 will pick up with Barry after he defeated the Reverse Flash once and for all, and begins one week later following their epic battle. Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton) are reconnecting and growing closer than ever before. But when a deadly group of Rogues descend on Central City led by a powerful new threat, The Flash and his team — Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), Meta-Empath Cecile Horton (Danielle Nicolet), the light-powered meta Allegra Garcia (Kayla Compton), brilliant tech-nerd Chester P. Runk (Brandon McKnight) and reformed cryogenics thief Mark Blaine (Jon Cor) — must once again defy impossible odds to save the day.

You can tune in to the ninth and final season of “The Flash” which will be debuting on The CW, February 8, 2023.

After the success of the first Murder Mystery, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Netflix has commissioned a sequel for the Adam Sandler comedy. Filming came to an end in 2022, and has since been in post-production. The movie is currently set to premiere sometime in March 2023; here’s our updated first look and preview.

Murder Mystery 2 is an upcoming Netflix Original comedy movie, and the sequel to Netflix’s incredibly successful 2019 comedy, Murder Mystery. Jeremy Garelick replaces Kyle Newacheck as the director of the project, but James Vanderbilt has returned to write the sequel.

Murder Mystery is one of Netflix’s most successful Originals ever, thanks to amassing an audience of over 83 million households. If Murder Mystery 2 was to replicate even half the success of its predecessor we’d suspect Netflix will be incredibly happy.

What is the production status of Murder Mystery 2?

Official Production Status: Post-Production (Last Updated: 18/10/2022)

Filming for Murder Mystery 2 took place in the first few months of 2022. Principal photography began on January 28th, 2022, and lasted for three months before ending on April 26th, 2022.

We know the locations used for filming are Hawaii, in the United States and Paris, France.

Like the first film, production will be handled by Adam Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison Productions.

What is the plot of Murder Mystery 2?

A brief synopsis of the sequel has been made available thus far:

“Detective couple Audrey and Nick get involved in some international intrigue when their pal is kidnapped at his own wedding in the comedy sequel.”

Who are the cast members of Murder Mystery 2?

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston have been confirmed to be returning to reprise their roles of Nick and Audrey Spitz.

If you include Uncut Gems, which is a Netflix Original outside of the US, then Sandler will have starred in ten Original films for Netflix.

  • Melanie Laurent
  • Jodie Turner-Smith

With 32 critics and industry prizes handed out thus far, Oscar nomination voting is now only 10 days away. So where does it all stand at the top of the New Year? The Palm Springs Film Festival kicks off later this week and the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards will soon mark the first televised ceremonies of the season.

Will “The Fabelmans” bring director Steven Spielberg his third statuette? Is it all locked and loaded for Ke Huy Quan? Will the early favorites such as Brendan Fraser go all the way? Who in God’s name will win lead actress and supporting actress? Who are the potential surprise nominees that could surge in these final days? Here are the tallies of awards earned so far.

Best Picture

  1. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” – 16
  2. “The Banshees of Inisherin” – 5
  3. “She Said” and “Tár” – 2

A24’s multiverse dramedy has been a critical darling with huge wins, including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (where it tied with “Tár”). This is unsurprising given love for the feature since its debut. Whether the Daniels’ will tickle the fancy of the Academy at large has been the biggest question mark, no matter how passionate Film Twitter makes it sound. But who can blame them for being so bullish on its chances (at least on paper)? The box office hit is the critical leader in five categories and second in the tally in four others. But one fact that Oscar enthusiasts tend to forget — critics don’t vote at the Academy Awards. They provide a roadmap to the destination, but the Oscars can take their own path (and they almost always do).

This is still a wide-open race where “Banshees” could catch fire later down the road or a crowdpleaser like “Top Gun: Maverick” could take full advantage of a preferential ballot system. While “Tár” has only had two wins so far, LAFCA and New York Film Critics are significant. That bodes well for Todd Field, who is hunting for a directing nod.

Keep an eye on “She Said,” which remains a mysterious entity to consider, especially after its surprising AFI Top 10 mention.

Directing

  1. Daniels (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) – 16
  2. Todd Field (“Tár”) – 3
  3. Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”) and Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”) – 2

The Daniels have performed brilliantly on the awards circuit, picking up many awards to accompany best picture wins. I’ve been on the record about feeling their road to the film winning the Oscars’ top prize is if the Academy feels a duo should be awarded. Is it impossible for the team to get recognized? Absolutely not.

If the Daniels can squeak out a Golden Globe win, making them the first directing duo to win with the 80-year-old group, their chances could greatly increase.

Best Actor

  1. Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) – 16
  2. Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) – 9

Farrell and Fraser are the only contenders that have won more than one critics’ prize this season. Bill Nighy’s LAFCA win for lead performance could continue to give him steam heading into the final days of SAG Awards voting. He’s pulled in the key noms for a Globe and Critics Choice.

It’s worth noting that Austin Butler’s turn in “Elvis” and Gabriel LaBelle in “The Fabelmans” have each picked up two breakout awards on the circuit.

Best Actress

  1. Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) – 15
  2. Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) – 11
  3. Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) – 2

A tight race if ever there was one, with Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh pulling away from the pack. Danielle Deadwyler’s two wins will hopefully keep her on the radar for a while. The only other women to have garnered mentions are Vicky Krieps for “Corsage” (perhaps helping the film’s chances in international feature) and Rosy McEwen for “Blue Jean” (a potential BAFTA favorite).

Supporting Actor

  1. Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) – 24
  2. Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) – 2

When Ke Huy Quan won the Gotham Award for best supporting performance, it was the symbolic kickoff to his dominant campaign. He earned it with his turn as the lovable Waymond Wang in the Daniels’ martial arts spectacle. His competition looks to be Brendan Gleeson’s Irish musician in Martin McDonagh’s romp. Only Gleeson and Quan have been named among the precursors being tracked.

Supporting Actress

  1. Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) – 9
  2. Janelle Monáe (“Glass Onion”) – 4
  3. Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) – 3

A surprising turn of events has been Kerry Condon’s fiery turn in “Banshees” being the most awarded on the circuit up to this point, but it makes sense when knowing many of these organizations vote with a preferential ballot system. It’s easy to see Condon’s performance as a consistent no. 2 and no. 3 choices, with everyone having different favorites. The same could be said for Janelle Monáe’s double character duty.

Stephanie Hsu’s team is hoping the young breakout of “Everything Everywhere” can join her co-star Jamie Lee Curtis on the Oscar ballot, especially with the third most wins of the season. Notably, she also has two wins for breakthrough performer, which we don’t count in the tally in this race.

To highlight the unknown trajectory of this category, 11 different actresses have won prizes with Curtis and Keke Palmer (“Nope”), as the only ones to have more than one. Other notables include Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), Jessie Buckley (“Women Talking”), Hong Chau (“The Whale”), Dolly De Leon (“Triangle of Sadness”) and Nina Hoss (“Tár”).

To see the ranked predictions for each individual category, visit Variety’s Oscars Hub.

The top three artisan leaders are also listed below (where applicable).

Note: Not every organization hands out wins for the corresponding category. For “screenplay” only winners, we’ve applied it to the place where it’s competing and have only named the top three if there is more than one win for the film.

Original Screenplay

  1. “The Banshees of Inisherin” – 15
  2. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” – 10

In 2019, during the time of the Pandemic, when Noah Baumbach picked up a copy of White Noise by Don DeLillo to re read it, after just having lost hus father, it had a big effect on him.

According to Noah Baumbach the film dives deep into “The lengths that people go to defend themselves or their families or children from perceived or unperceived dangers of the outside while ignoring the fissures that are occurring inside.”

Courtesy of Netflix

White Noise is set in the 80’s and that heavily translates onscreen. “White Noise was designed as a kind of idea of the 1980s,” Baumbach explained during a recent phone conversation about the making of the film. The Netflix production is the closest thing to a big blockbuster that he has directed so far. This is also his second collaboration with Adam Driver. “It was fun to essentially do a nostalgic, alternate ’80s, which wasn’t really what the decade was like. Everything was inspired by real things, but we were looking at a memory-slash-fantasy-slash-idea of a time and place.”

Courtesy of Netflix

The story follows the Gladney family. At once hilarious and horrifying, lyrical and absurd, ordinary and apocalyptic, “White Noise” dramatizes a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world. Starring Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, Raffey Cassidy, Sam Nivola, May Nivola, Lars Eidinger, Andre Benjamin, Jodie Turner-Smith. Written and Directed by Noah Baumbach, Produced by David Heyman, Uri Singer, Executive Produced by Brian Bell and Leslie Converse with Music by Danny Elfman.

This enthralling story asks the questions of life and death in a comedic, and entertaining way, the film throws you into the midst of unexpected situations, with vivid cinematography, colorful costumes and exciting action, as well as complex characters. We see brilliant leading performances from Adam Driver for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination and Greta Gerwig as well as a great supporting performance from Don Cheadle.

In a recent interview with Tudum
Noah Baumbach spoke about the toe tapping end credits scene, set in the supermarket and how crucial it is to the film. “The supermarket is both ordinary and extraordinary at the same time, it depends on how and when you look at it.” The end credits songs ends with a new LCD Soundsystem song, “new body rhumba.”

“I’ve been friends with James Murphy, the band’s front man since he did songs for Greenberg,” Baumbach says. “After choreographer David Neumann and I worked on the dance for a bit, I asked James if he could write an upbeat song about death. I knew this would appeal to him. As would the ’80s time period.”

Courtesy of Netflix

Speaking about the dance sequence, Baumbach goes on to say “The dance sequence was shot over two days on the supermarket set designed by Jess Gonchor in an abandoned Home Depot. Weeks in advance, James, David and I came up with a tempo that worked for the movement. James later wrote the song to fit the tempo.”

He goes on to say “What I love about David’s choreography is that it’s designed to fit the individual. Some of the movement is more complex and involved and some is very simple. So, everyone could move and dance in a way that represented and celebrated themselves.”

According to Baumbach “The final scene is a dance of death and a dance of life. It’s a celebration of all that’s ending. Which is a celebration of all that is.”

Terrifying moment hundreds of men swarm around lone girl, 17, and attack her for ‘dressing immodestly and distracting riders’ at a motorcycle event in Iraq

  • The girl attempts to escape the angry mob as they kick her and call her a ‘b****’
  • A man accompanying the girl was reportedly stabbed while trying to protect her
  • Sixteen men arrested by Sulaymaniyah police in connection with the incident

Shocking footage has emerged of a teenage girl being attacked by a crowd of men for dressing ‘immodestly’ at a motorcycle event in Iraq.

The 17-year-old was targeted by a male mob who accused her of distracting riders at the racing event in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

Video filmed and shared by a racegoer in Sulaymaniyah showed the teenager attempting to walk away from the area before being forced to run as a crowd of men pursued her screaming: ‘B****’.

The girl, who is an Iranian national, was wearing a black vest top with a cardigan and a skirt.

Other videos posted on TikTok showed her being surrounded by bikers on the track as spectators cheer them on.

The site is said to be a famous spot for racing events that often have female participants, and the girl, identified as L Tehrani, is reportedly a regular at the track.

Men at this specific event, on December 30, demanded that women be excluded, according to a report by Kurdistan’s Draw Media.

The girl was accompanied a male friend, named as A Khanaq, who tried to intervene and escort her to safety.

But he was beaten and stabbed by the crowd, according to a report in The National News.

Sixteen men have been arrested by Sulaymaniyah police in connection with the incident and multiple knives and swords were also recovered from the suspects’ possession.

The incident comes as female demonstrators in neighbouring Iran continue to tear off their hijabs, cut off their hair and battle officers in protest after a young woman died in police custody having been arrested for not wearing the veil.

Just days ago an Iranian woman was jailed for ten years for ‘encouraging prostitution’ after she removed her headscarf at a protest last year.

Synology has patched a vulnerability discovered in its router software, that’s been rated maximum severity – 10/10.

According to an advisory released by the NAS manufacturer, the vulnerability was discovered in its VPN Plus Server software, and is now being tracked as CVE-2022-43931.

The software allows the routers to be configured as VPN servers and enables remote access to the endpoints behind that router.

Remote code execution and other woes

Apparently, threat actors can exploit the flaw in low-complexity attacks, and would not require any privileges, or user interaction, to gain access, with an extensive list of potential damage.

“A vulnerability allows remote attackers to possible execute arbitrary command via a susceptible version of Synology VPN Plus Server,” the advisory reads. “Out-of-bounds write vulnerability in Remote Desktop Functionality in Synology VPN Plus Server before 1.4.3-0534 and 1.4.4-0635 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via unspecified vectors.”

Out-of-bounds write vulnerabilities allow for data corruption, system crashes, as well as code execution following memory corruption, BleepingComputer explained.

This is not the first time Synology has had to address a high-severity vulnerability in its products – as in December 2022, it patched multiple such flaws discovered in its Router Manager.

“Multiple vulnerabilities allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary command, conduct denial-of-service attacks or read arbitrary files via a susceptible version of Synology Router Manager (SRM),” the company said at the time.

No CVEs were published for these vulnerabilities, but we do know that at least two security experts and teams were successful at creating a proof-of-concept using the Synology RT6600ax (opens in new tab) router, during the Pwn2Own Toronto 2022 hacking contest.

Cybersecurity researcher Gaurav Baruah was awarded $20,000 for successfully running a command injection attack against the WAN interface of the Synology RT6600ax.

In April last year, the company announced patching a number of flaws affecting multiple products: “Multiple vulnerabilities allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information and possibly execute arbitrary code via a susceptible version of Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) and Synology Router Manager (SRM),” the firm said in an advisory back then.

“He’s always there behind me, clawing at that, especially when I’m shooting,” Bentley said of portraying the complicated Jamie Dutton in the hit Paramount series.

Wes Bentley is reflecting on the plight of Jamie Dutton.

The “Yellowstone” actor plays Jamie, the son of rancher-turned-governor John Dutton (Kevin Costner), in the hit Paramount Network series. Yet Bentley’s emotional journey through depression has anchored the character, forcing Bentley to create new boundaries between his roles and home life.

“He’s incredibly sad,” Bentley told The New York Times of his character Jamie. “I’ve always dealt with my sadness with things like comedy, or humor, or drugs at one point, or trying to just ignore it and finding another way out of it. But you can’t do that when you’re trying to portray someone’s sadness. You have to let it be there. That’s been the hardest part of it all, and it’s weighed on my life a little bit.”

Bentley has portrayed Jamie since “Yellowstone” debuted in 2018. Season 5 returns this summer.

“I’ve prided myself for most of my career on leaving it at the door, or like an athlete would say, leaving it on the field,” Bentley continued. “But Jamie’s sadness permeates my life, even though I’m not sad. I’m very lucky to have a great family and be where I’m at in life, but he’s always there behind me, clawing at that, especially when I’m shooting.”

Bentley added that his wife, “Dolan’s Cadillac” associate producer and assistant director Jacqui Swedberg, warns him about letting Jamie permeate his psyche.

“‘You’re letting him come home now,’” Bentley recalled Swedberg telling him. “‘Jamie’s coming home, and we don’t want him here.’”

Bentley previously opened up about battling addiction in his early career. In 2008, Bentley pled guilty to heroin possession; the actor has since been sober since July 2009.

“Before I was like, ‘I’m partying, fine, but I can stop this,’” Bentley said. “Now it was like, ‘Man, I can’t stop this, and I really want to.’…The regrets are always going to be there.”

Bentley summed up, “I believe in fate, and I believe I went through all that, caused all that, and experienced all that, because I was going to get here. There are many things that I regret, but I’m just so happy with my life.”

The latest sighting comes after Leo was recently linked to model Victoria Lamas. They were seen together three times in a week late last month following reports that Gigi Hadid was not ‘serious’ about their short-lived romance.

While the Hollywood hunk and Hadid were reportedly still dating in late November, the superstar appears to be moving on with Lorenzo Lamas’ daughter.

Leo’s outing with Victoria comes after he ended his four year relationship with Camila Morrone, 25, in August, a source close to Leo claimed to The Sun.

He also starred in the 1978 movie Grease as minor character Tom Chisum, who was the captain of Rydell’s football team.

Meanwhile, Shauna, 51, is an American actress and was Playboy magazine’s Playmate of the Month for May 1996.

Banijay Takes Full Control Of Beyond And Prepares For Rebrand

Banijay has taken full control of Mythbusters firm Beyond International and intends to rename and rebrand the Australian outfit as the “necessary integration process” kicks off. The circa-$30M acquisition was first revealed in October last year, giving the acquisitive French powerhouse control of an 8,000-hour catalog including factual hits such as Highway Thru Hell, Heavy Rescue: 401, Massive Engineering Mistakes, Halifax: Retribution and Deadly Women. The move leaves distributor Banijay Rights, which shops the likes of MasterChef and Big Brother, with a circa-130,000 hour catalog. Today, Banijay took full control and a spokeswoman said the intention is that “[Beyond’s] distribution activities will fall under Banijay Rights’ name.” The acquisition was carried out via a Scheme Implementation Deed which, once implemented, means Beyond ceases to be publicly traded. Beyond Managing Director and CEO Mikael Borglund is remaining in his current role. Banijay itself is part of FL Entertainment, which formed last July and is listed on Euronext Amsterdam through an agreement with SPAC investment group.

A Special Agent puts his challenges to good use in the first season of the Will Trent TV show on ABC. As we all know, Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Will Trent is cancelled or renewed for season two. Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustrated when their viewing habits and opinions aren’t considered, we invite you to rate all of the first season episodes of Will Trent here.

An ABC procedural drama series, the Will Trent TV series is based on the book series by Karin Slaughter and stars Ramón Rodríguez, Erika Christensen, Iantha Richardson, Jake McLaughlin, and Sonja Sohn. The story follows Special Agent Will Trent (Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). A loner, he has the highest clearance rate in the GBI and can deconstruct a crime scene like no one else. Will was abandoned at birth and endured a traumatic childhood in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. Despite his personal challenges, he’s determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was. Angie Polaski (Christensen) and Michael Ormewood (McLaughlin) are both detectives with the Atlanta Police Department but have very different backgrounds. Faith Mitchell (Richardson) is Will’s new partner at the GBI and was born into a law enforcement family. Amanda Wagner (Sohn) is the head of the GBI and Will and Faith’s boss.

What do you think? Which season one episodes of the Will Trent TV series do you rate as wonderful, terrible, or somewhere between? Do you think that Will Trent should be cancelled or renewed for a second season on ABC?

Chazelle was inspired by Pacino’s arc in “The Godfather” for Calva’s Hollywood newcomer Manny.

Writer-director Damien Chazelle knew Diego Calva would go big or go home while casting for “Babylon.”

The Oscar winner selected “Narcos: Mexico” alum Calva after a 2020 screen test opposite Margot Robbie. Chazelle filmed the chemistry read on his cellphone and immediately compared Calva’s raw talent to that of legendary actor Al Pacino.

“He had this kind of Al Pacino-level ability to command the camera without seeming to do anything,” Chazelle told The New York Times. Chazelle noted that Pacino’s arc as Michael Corleone in “The Godfather” films in part inspired Calva’s role as Hollywood newcomer Manny.

Co-star Robbie shared of Calva’s performance, “It’s so transformative to act with him because he’s so present that you forget you’re doing a scene. He was the greatest scene partner I could ever wish for.”

Calva, who is nominated for a Golden Globe for his turn in “Babylon,” told IndieWire that playing Manny was “a different adventure every day,” adding, “It was a different mood and a different situation every day.”

He continued, “I like to tell the story of how we had the same first day on a Hollywood set. My first day is his first day, so some of the surprise faces or the awe you see in my face, or in Manny’s face — it’s me, sometimes. We share a lot of first new experiences, like meeting Brad Pitt, working with Margot Robbie, working with Damien, and in his case, maybe Nellie and Jack.”

And Calva isn’t the only “Babylon” star drawing comparisons to other Academy Award-winning performances. Eric Roberts, who also appears in the silent era-set film, likened Robbie’s scene-stealing turn as actress Nellie to Elizabeth Taylor and Sandy Dennis’ landmark performances in Mike Nichols’ “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

“I don’t watch myself anymore, because I’ve seen everything I do,” Roberts said. “But Damien Chazelle’s movie, I have watched that. I will also tell you that Margot Robbie is going to win an Academy Award for that. She gives the most incredible performance in ‘Babylon’ that I have ever seen. The two incredible actresses in ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ gave perfect performances, and it’s on that level. She blew me away. I couldn’t believe how brilliant every minute of every day she was.”

INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OF INDIA 2022 REVIEW! Ali Abbasi’s third feature, Holy Spider, comes from a true-crime occurrence of serial murders in Iran in 2002. Saeed Hanaei, a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war, took upon himself what he called a ‘jihad’ of cleansing Iran of filth. Targeting sex workers in the streets of Mashhad, Hanaei murdered sixteen women and dumped their bodies. It all turned into one of the most heinous crime incidents in the country that gave him a nickname – Spider Killer.

Holy Spider, however, extends the narrative of a crime-thriller and police procedural drama. It does begin like one when we see a figure, visible only as a silhouette, picking up a prostitute off the streets and then taking her up to an apartment. It’s implied that he has brought her to his neighborhood as he constantly asks her to be quiet. He kills her, instead in a hush, and then dumps her body. But, not long after, Saeed Azmi (Mehdi Bajestani) is revealed to be the one drifting Mashhad at night, picking up his victims. A real family man, Saeed lives a respectful life in the suburbs with his wife, a son, and two kids, all unknown to his criminal activities. That’s one sign that Holy Spider won’t be just about catching and unmasking the culprit.

Bajestani looks the part and quite impeccably executes it. While working his day job and handling family affairs, he is calm, composed, well-loved, and respected in the family. But then, portraying his other, true self, his anger, obsession, and wicked sense of morality bring the vileness of his character on-screen. His body language induces fright, while his thoughts and actions would make you immediately hate him.

“A journalist battles to unravel the truth behind a long going serial killings case left unsolved and neglected under oppressive socio-political biases.”

But it’s Zar Amir Ebrahimi who uplifts Holy Spider from an eccentric thriller to an investigative study of patriarchal ideologies and the symbolic struggle against them. Ebrahimi plays Rahimi, a journalist who travels to Mashhad to unravel the truth behind these ‘spider’ killings. In her first experience in the city, Rahimi is denied entry into the hotel she has pre-booked. Her being unmarried calls for policing of her character and her hijab, which has left strands of her hair visible. This is the first of many layers of film’s study into morality policing, gender bias, and stereotyping against women in Iran.

Ebrahimi’s character is a fictional one. She has nothing to do with the actual events of the serial killings Saeed orchestrated. But, perhaps, Abbasi’s true motives behind recreating a two-decade-old case better mirror with a strong female protagonist, who makes up for a great contrast against the actual situation of women’s rights and liberties in Iran. Abbasi’s Holy Spider is perhaps coming forth at the right time, with Iran erupting in protests, marches, and globally communicated activism that supports equality for the suppressed gender. Rahimi, an independent, strong-minded lady, is a striking bullet to the misogyny embedded in Iran’s well-established patriarchal ideals.

At one point, she also battles sexism and unwanted advances from a police officer, going against the odds to bring all those murdered women justice. A figure of authority treating Rahimi with such behavior further digs into the severity of the issue in discussion.

Which series and movies ended up on top at the streaming giant at the end of 2022?

In the last month of 2022, Netflix’s hit “Wednesday” just beat out the platform’s long-time flagship original series, “Stranger Things,” to be the most in-demand show available on the platform at the start of December, according to Parrot Analytics‘ data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement.

The new “Addams Family” spinoff had 66.27 times the average series demand for the first half of December and looks on track to be one of the strongest premieres of the year, even outpacing global demand for the premiere of “Squid Game” in 2021.

Chris Ledesma, the music editor for “The Simpsons” who worked on the long-running animated sitcom from its very first season in 1989 until May, 2022, died Dec. 16, Fox Television announced. He was 64.

The network first made his death public on Sunday, Jan. 1 with the year’s first episode of “The Simpsons,” which ended with a tribute to him.

“Ledesma poured his heart and soul into crafting the musical language of The Simpsons. Chris imbued every episode of the show over 33 seasons with his deep knowledge and even deeper passion for the music which has become a part of so many peoples’ lives. Chris will always be a vital member of the The Simpsons family, and his loss is felt deeply by the many who loved him,” Matt Selman, showrunner of “The Simpsons,” said in a statement provided to the Los Angeles times.

No cause of death has been announced.

Ledesma first served as a music supervisor for “The Simpsons” when he joined the Fox sketch comedy series “The Tracey Ullman Show,” where the Simpson family debuted as a series of animated shorts. When the shorts were spun off into “The Simpsons” in 1989 he moved with them and remained with the show for more than 700 episodes.

“The Simpsons” writer Carolyn Omine wrote on Sunday, “Chris Ledesma was a sweet man who loved his job and was really, really good at it. We miss him.”

After Ledesma stepped down, he was replaced as music editor by Jake Schaefer; on Monday Schaefer wrote, “Chris Ledesma’s passion for music and for @TheSimpsons was an inspiration. I’m grateful for the time I got to spend with him this year. He was a great mentor and a genuine person. My heart goes out to his family. Rest In Peace Chris.”

Hailey Bieber shared a “holiday dump” of pics to Instagram on Monday, January 2, which included a few new photos of her New Year’s Eve LBD (the one with the exposed thong), as well as some snaps of her winter vacation with husband Justin Bieber.

In one of the photos, the 25-year-old sits on Justin’s lap while hanging out on some snow-covered mountaintop; in another slo-mo video, she appears to be jumping for joy and just generally having a great time; in a third pic of the vacation, Bieber layers a large puffer jacket over her smaller North Face puffer jacket, in true Southern California girl style.

“Best times,” wrote the model in the caption, “best friends. Happy New Year.”

Between all the snowy photos of Bieber’s unbridled joy was a seemingly innocuous shot of glazed chocolate donuts–which, rather than being her breakfast, is probably a nod to the “glazed” trend that her brand, Rhode Beauty, has become synonymous with over the past year.

Serious Men

Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Nassar, Indira Tiwari, Aakshath Das, Shweta Basu Prasad, Sanjay Narvekar

Director: Sudhir Mishra

In fact, to call Serious Men, based on the novel of same name by Manu Joseph, only a satire is not enough. It’s more real than reality in a unique way. It’s that aspirational trait in us that forces us to take the dangerous route. You know, the roads that can save time but also pose a robbery threat. Director Sudhir Mishra has turned Joseph’s super-sharp tale into an equally impactful film with Nawazuddin Siddiqui dropping the Nawazuddin Siddiqui act and blanketing himself with an all-together new persona, which is a heady cocktail of cynicism, greed, revenge and intellect.

Ayyan Mani (Siddiqui), a risk-taking Tamil Dalit from a Mumbai chawl, has a bizarre sense of humour. He is one of those people who keep dragging a joke till it starts seeming like a mythical narrative. Bold, spontaneous and aspirational, Mani is the assistant to a reputed and somewhat legendary astro-physicist Aravind Acharya (Nassar). While people underestimate Mani, he keeps hatching one plan after another, and you can’t actually blame him as the poverty in a chawl can be excruciatingly painful.

Director Mishra ensures we see Mani’s humble lifestyle around sky-scrappers, but he keeps twisting the plots before you form any final opinion about him. After a long time, Siddiqui has left behind his now-famous cynical laugh and disapproving body-language to portray a character that is ready to take a beating for the sake of small fun.

There is a board at his workplace, the Institute of Theory and Research that is used for showcasing quotable quotes from renowned scientists. He simply omits one name and puts another underneath a quote to make it sustain one more day. He sees a man at the sea bank and tells his wife what that person could be thinking before suicide, and just when the poor woman starts to believe him, the other man walks past them nonchalantly. In the middle of a conversation, he switches to Tamil only to piss off his arrogant and disrespectful Brahmin boss. And he is quite at ease while doing so as if the only thing he cares about is some fun and a little more intimacy. It’s tough to get his drift for the people around him, but for the audience, it’s the best that has come in Unlock 5.

Read: Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare Movie Review

Read: Halahal Movie Review

The moment Mani has been waiting his entire life, comes with the sudden popularity of his son as a mathematics prodigy. He starts weaving theories around the kid’s genius and it’s hard to tell how much of it is not correct. But that’s Mani for you, he lives for another day, another win.

It’s like no other film that either Mishra or Siddiqui has done. While staying close to Jospeh’s skepticism about the idea of a just society, they have made the film their own by infusing an indomitable spirit and a certain kind of cleverness, rather cunningness, in the storytelling. Whenever Mishra goes political, Siddiqui ensures it doesn’t become an in your face sermon. Similarly, Mishra channels Siddiqui’s otherwise uncontrollable energy into a certain direction where everything except greed seems futile.

On top of everything, Mani categorically says, “Primitive minds. I can’t deal with you.”

It’s rudimentary yet deep, simple yet penetrating, serious yet funny. No wonder, they have called it Serious Men. These are seriously funny men or funnily serious men. One of the finest films of the year. Don’t even think of giving it a skip.

Jeremy Renner was helping a family member whose car was stranded in the snow when he was involved in a snow plowing accident Sunday, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

“Based on our investigation, Mr. Renner’s personal vehicle, which was being driven by a family member, had become stuck in the snow near his home,” Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said during a press conference. “Mr. Renner went to retrieve his PistenBully or Sno-Cat — an extremely large piece of snow removal equipment weighing at least 14,330 pounds — in an effort to get his vehicle moving. After successfully towing his personal vehicle from its stuck location, Mr. Renner got out of his PistenBully to speak to his family member. At this point, it was observed that the PistenBully started to roll. In an effort to stop the rolling PistenBully, Mr. Renner attempts to get back into the driver’s seat of the PistenBully. Based on our investigation, it’s at this point that Mr. Renner is run over by the PistenBully. An eyewitness detailed seeing Mr. Renner getting into the PistenBully and not seeing him again until the PistenBully came to a rest in a pile of snow in front of his driveway.”

Sheriff Balaam said that he does not believe Renner was impaired at the time of the accident: “We do not suspect any foul play. We believe this was a tragic accident.”

According to the Sheriff, there was about “three feet of fresh snow” on the ground at the time of the accident and many abandoned cars blocking the roadways, making it more difficult to get to the scene. Once they arrived, Renner was administered first aid by first responders as well as neighbors who assisted with towels. The investigation is still ongoing.

Renner also posted a selfie on Instagram Tuesday, writing: “Thank you all for your kind words. I’m too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve told the Reno Gazette-Journal on Monday that Renner was helping someone stuck in the snow when he was run over by his own snowplow. “He is always helping others,” she told the newspaper.

On Monday, the “Hawkeye” star underwent two surgeries after suffering blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries in the weather-related incident. Following surgery, Renner remained in the intensive care unit in “critical but stable condition,” according to his representation.

Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a “traumatic injury” involving Renner in Reno, Nev. on Sunday, and they transferred the actor to a nearby hospital.

In a statement on Monday, the actor’s representation said, “Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families. They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”

Between Saturday and Sunday, Reno received 6-12 inches of snow at elevations under 5,000 feet, and 18 inches at higher elevations, according to the National Weather Service Reno. Two weeks prior to the accident, Renner posted a photo of himself on Instagram driving a snowplow.

Renner is best known for his role as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring in films such as “The Avengers,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Captain America: Civil War” and “Thor,” as well as his own TV miniseries “Hawkeye,” on Disney+. Renner also leads the Paramount+ series “Mayor of Kingstown” and has appeared in both the “Mission: Impossible” and “Bourne” action film franchises.

While the character of Miss Honey in Roald Dahl’s book “Matilda” is a hero of the story, standing up to the evil Miss Trunchbull and fostering young Matilda’s creativity, actress Lashana Lynch was eager to ensure that her take on the character in Netflix’s musical adaptation wouldn’t continue a tired trope of Black women in parts like this.

“I’m constantly trying to teach the world to dismantle the strong Black woman trope. We did that without even discussing her race, and that’s really important,” she told TheWrap in a recent interview. “I’m glad that that was a decision that was made before I even got to set, that she just exists as a human. We humanized this woman, this Black woman, and we allowed her to live comfortably and grow in private.”

As for the character’s own background, Lynch found discussions around mental health crucial to developing her take on the role.

“I constantly want to discuss mental health within cinema, and I was really happy that upon bringing my ideas to Matthew [Warchus] about discussing anxiety and depression and self-loathing and low self-esteem, that we could find this entry into Miss Honey that was different and spoke to young women or to the all women of today and really, really made us cheer her on in her fight for finding courage and confidence in herself,” she said. “I wanted to discuss that and also I learned that we as women are just freakin’ incredible man. We’re just like unearthly. It’s amazing to play a role that is so unbelievably vulnerable, but teaches you where your strength comes from.”

Lynch connected to her character of Miss Honey most through her performance of the song “My House” in “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical,” directed by Matthew Warchus.

“It’s such a beautiful song. It’s brilliantly written, expertly composed. It felt very suited to my tone and me as a vocalist. I sang before I acted and I always said that if I get to sing through acting, then I want the song to suit my voice. And I think it does,” she said. “I’m singing about my house while we’re in the house during a pandemic. It was really triggering to be talking about your things when that’s all we were looking at every single day. And then being able to record that and sing it with Matilda was beautiful because I got to do it as a pre-record and I also got to sing it live, which was highly emotional.”

While her emotional connection to “My House” makes it a favorite, Lynch also mentioned “Still Holding My Hand” as another song she was grateful to have written for her version of Miss Honey.

“That was really special for the children. That moment in the canteen when the tables start spinning and suddenly they’ve got glittery blazers on. I’m like, ‘This is proper movie magic. I wish I was a child in this scene,’ it was so incredible to watch,” she said.

She also loved the unruly students organizing into a flashmob at the close of the film.

“The finale of the movie with them jumping out of the front door of the school and doing that massive group routine with all of the things flying everywhere and there’s about — I want to say there’s about four different routines happening at once in that point,” she said. “And our choreographer. Ellen [Kane] did such an incredible job at getting these children ready. It’s hundreds of children doing this routine.”

Lynch channeled her primary school elementary teacher, who was her personal Miss Honey, in the role as well. This teacher didn’t exactly match Miss Honey’s temperament, but she taught Lynch singing, confidence and more.

“She, alongside other teachers that I’ve had in high school, reminded me of my natural abilities and my capabilities. I was reminded of what I want that feeling to be for Matilda and the children,” she said. “And that is one of looking forward to coming to school firstly, because that’s not always a child’s experience. And also looking forward to having fun learning through someone who cares about children as human beings instead of children, as these young people that don’t really understand, that have a lot to learn, that have a ways to go.”

Taking notes from good positive memories and experiences with teachers in school helped Lynch hone her Miss Honey.

“I wanted Ms. Honey to just be the person that just understood no matter what the problem may be, she understands and she’s a trusted and safe space,” she said. “I had that as a young person, and it was important for me to even if I flopped the role and didn’t do a good job, if the children on set felt like they had a bit of that every day coming to work, then my job was done.”

“Matilda the Musical” is now streaming on Netflix.

While HBO’s hit series “Euphoria” is plenty buzzworthy for its cast and storylines, the show’s craftspeople take pride in using the artistry of makeup, costume design and hair to support the specific story being told – which ultimately allows viewers to feel seen in the various characters’ looks.

“The feedback that was really life-changing from thousands of people was that they felt seen and heard and excited to use makeup to explore who they are and express who they are,” department head of makeup Donni Davy said in the latest installment of TheWrap’s How I Did It, sponsored by HBO.

“Sam Levinson had this vision for the show to be this vessel for makeup as self-expression,” Davy added, but makeup is just one of many components working together to bring these characters to life.

The first place the actors go is to wardrobe for fittings. “I build a deck that has sort of a road map of what I’m planning for each scene, and then I would share it with all our creative departments,” costume designer Heidi Bivens said.

“Each person has their own style, so I wanted to do the same thing for hair,” department head of hair Kim Kimble added. “I want to make sure it cohesively looks good.”

“Across all creative departments, the level of artistry on the show is such that every scene matters, even if it’s a tiny flashback,” Davy said. And communication between the departments is key, especially because the “Euphoria” production is known to change things up on the fly.

“In the beginning, that’s when things are really hopeful. Once we start filming, it just goes so quick,” Davy said of the process of making the show. “Heidi will text me and be like, ‘FYI, this changed,’ and I’ll be like, ‘OK, the makeup’s gotta change too, because the makeup was based on this and that and it’s all very interconnected.”

Davy explained that when designing a character’s makeup, the character’s emotion in the scene plays a big role.

“The first thing I think about is how is this person feeling right now? What did they just do? Last time we saw Lexi, she was like sitting on the stairs typing on her laptop. Now we see her on the phone with Fez. What has changed about her level of confidence?”

Tracking each character’s current emotional state while also filming out of order and shooting multiple different episodes in a single day is “like this giant chaotic puzzle,” Davy said. “The beautiful chaos of working on ‘Euphoria.’”

But the completed puzzle results in something that fans have latched onto in a tangible way, and it’s not lost on the craftspeople that their artistry is making a difference.

“Expressive, fun, interesting makeup has been going on forever but more on the periphery and sort of outside of mainstream society, and I think seeing it on characters, not on models walking down a runway, real, flawed characters really hit for people watching,” Davy said.

“Euphoria” is available on demand from HBO and is streaming on HBO Max.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Roberts opened up about her long term secret relationship with Laign, and why she chose to come out to the public. “She’s very, very supportive and she’s been right there beside me every step of the way,” Robin said. She also said that Laign is not as comfortable on camera. “Not everyone wants to be in the spotlight,” Roberts said.

In July, Laign and Roberts commemorated their 15th anniversary with an Instagram post featuring a collage of photos of the couple over the years. “Your grace caught my eye right away and the ease of the evening continued to flow through dinner ? ,” Laign wrote in a post that Roberts also posted on her account. “We had a second date soon after and I couldn’t believe how at ease I was with you as we shared each other’s lives sipping lychee and apple martinis ? You left for Tahiti the following day and during that time apart I grew this feeling inside of me that still, is very present today….butterflies.”

NOTE: The below piece originally ran in 2021. Special thanks to producer, speaker and guest author Stu Pollard, who will be returning to Film Independent January 10 for his semi-regular educational session Equity Financing 101. Wondering how to approach investors and pull together funding for your independent film project? This session is for you.

***

It may seem like forever since you’ve attended an in-person event, let alone a crowded one. Thankfully, those days are returning soon. And while we’ve all now got a pandemic to blame for rusty social skills, it’s worth noting that it was nearly a decade ago when Film Independent first approached me about developing a class on Producer’s Etiquette. They felt–and I agreed–that many in our community needed a regular refresher on basic manners.

I’ve taught the course annually ever since. So pandemic or not, there’s clearly interest on the subject of how to best behave, especially in pivotal professional settings.

Here’s a common misstep that I have observed numerous times: Someone attends a Film Independent event and is so “inspired” by the guest speaker that they corner them afterwards and aggressively pitch them on a project. I’ve even seen someone trying to foist a script into someone’s unsuspecting hands.

Bad idea.

Not only will this type of maneuver forever alienate you from that industry contact, it likely will also make them think twice about ever again donating their time to charitable organizations.

While you should avoid handing your script to strangers, networking remains an incredibly important part of our business. So what’s the right way to act? How do you make a great first impression? How do you turn a chance meeting into something more? Our Producer’s Etiquette class aims to help you get better at all of this and more. Here’s a preview…

NETWORKING: HALF THE WORD IS ‘WORK’

Networking is a lot like dating. If you start with “You’re hot, let’s sleep together!” it’s probably not going to go well. Relationships take time. This applies to everything from recruiting crew for your project to asking for money. The first few moments of any relationship are indeed critical. With all due respect to Malcolm Gladwell, however, gut reactions are just the start of the story. You still have myriad opportunities to influence someone’s impression of you.

One great way to increase your appeal to potential collaborators is to always consider what you can do for them. When you meet someone you know can bring value to your project, think about what’s in it for them. Forget about what they can do for you–how can you add value to their life or work?

EDUCATION AND PREPARATION

There are a million ways into this business, and that the entertainment industry doesn’t necessarily require formal education. But informal education is imperative. Subscribe to Film Independent, IndieWire, The Wrap, and others that interest you. Even if you’re just deleting the emails out of your inbox, you’ll see the headlines. You’ll also become familiar with the people out there getting things done. If you are going to one of those panels or events – do your homework on the speakers. If you do end up in a chance meeting, you’ll want to be prepared to have an informed discussion.

You need to be prepared to tell your own story, too. This doesn’t mean busting out a rehearsed five minute pitch, but you should sure as hell be able to recite your logline without stumbling. Being able to clearly articulate who you are, what inspires you, what you’re working on and even what you need will increase your chances of making a good impression when you’re asked about yourself.

THE ART OF FOLLOWING UP, PART ONE

How you follow-up a first meeting is nearly as important as the meeting itself. I’m a huge fan of the handwritten thank you note (see below), but those aren’t practical for a chance meeting. Digital follow-ups are the way to go, but avoid texts and stick to email. Keep it brief, focus on whom you’re writing to, why you appreciated the encounter and send it during normal business hours. Long emails with attachments (e.g. scripts) sent in the middle of the night will never ever serve you well.

If you make a great first impression and then follow it up with an eloquent thank you, you might just be in a position to set a more formal meeting down the road.

ETIQUETTE 101

The Zoom boom of the past 15 months will have effects both positive and negative on meetings overall. It will likely be easier than ever before to get digital face time with folks, but harder than previously to pin down people in person.

Everyone’s time is valuable, so whether it’s digital or in person don’t ever set a meeting unless you have a specific reason for it. Why do you want to meet? What’s the goal?

And even if it’s just an old-fashioned phone call, always remember your manners.

Be punctual. Figure out where you’re going, and be 10 minutes early. Look up the address, route and possible traffic obstructions the night before. Remember the old adage about business: “Early is on time, on time is late, and late is fired.”

Lose Your Phone. Silence phones in meetings—they shouldn’t even vibrate. Don’t use your phone as a watch. It’s distracting and pulls you out of the face-to-face interaction. And turn off your smart-watch notifications – there’s nothing more rude looking than checking your watching in a meeting. Bottom line, there are two types of people: those who leave their phone on the table during meetings and those who never pull it out. Guess which one is a better look.

Zoom Basics. You likely know all this by now, but just in case you don’t, here’s a quick rundown of basic zoom etiquette: Use a headset/mic, don’t turn your camera on if you’re in motion, mute yourself when you’re not talking, make sure you’re facing a light source, don’t use a distracting background, wear pants, put the dog in another room and for the love of god, don’t eat, chew gum or slurp your beverages.

THE ART OF FOLLOWING UP, PART TWO

The two most important words in independent film are “Thank You.” After a good meeting, write a handwritten thank you card and send it via the US mail. Nobody gets mail anymore, so it will make a memorable impact.

From there, brief, infrequent check-ins will likely go a long way over time. Don’t ever become needy or in too much of a hurry to make your new professional contact your new best friend. If you put out any pain-in-the-ass vibes, it’s over. Remember the dating analogy–if someone’s sending you flowers every week, that’s great—if you’re in love with them. If you’re not, it’s just creepy.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: BE NICE

We’ll talk about all this and more in a few weeks. Much of your success in this business will depend on your relationships. For those of us who are not well-connected, it will come down to those circles we build ourselves. Be the person you want to meet, work, and make a film with. Films are made by large groups of people—and every person wants to surround themselves with people they enjoy and admire.

Above all, be nice. It costs you nothing to do so. As Conan O’Brien once said, “If you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) fell short of the necessary number of votes to succeed Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) as speaker in an initial roll call Tuesday, becoming the first majority party leader in a century to fail to secure the speakership on the first ballot.

The vote is a clear sign of the divisions in the Republican Party. It is also a potential blow to California. Instead of handing off power and influence from a California Democrat in Pelosi to a California Republican in McCarthy, both leaders could be relegated to the back benches of Congress — one by choice and the other by force.

Nineteen Republicans voted for candidates other than McCarthy on the first ballot, leaving him 15 short of the 218 votes needed to secure the post he has long sought. The House speaker election hasn’t required multiple ballots on a floor vote since 1923, when then-Rep. Frederick Gillett (R-Mass.) was elected speaker on the ninth ballot.

Tuesday’s first-round outcome, however, wasn’t a surprise. A small number of conservative Republicans had for weeks vowed to oppose McCarthy on the floor when the new Congress convened, even as he continued to negotiate with members and make concessions on rules changes. What’s unclear is how the weeks-long stalemate between the majority of the House Republican Conference and the pocket of conservative antagonists will be resolved.

At noon, when the 118th Congress formally convened, officials were seen removing the metal detectors that Pelosi had installed outside the floor in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. But by the time the first roll call completed shortly before 2 p.m., the chamber still lacked new leadership.

The chamber’s failure to elect a speaker on the first ballot throws into chaos the beginning of a divided government in Washington, delaying the swearing-in of members of the House as well as votes on the rules that will govern the 118th Congress.

The splits within the GOP were evident even before the roll was called. Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Bob Good (R-Va.) and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) remained seated as most Republicans stood and applauded Rep. Elise Stefanik’s (R-N.Y.) nominating speech for McCarthy.

Democrats, in contrast, were in complete unity as Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Redlands) stood to nominate Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who has little chance of becoming speaker in a House Republican majority. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) later nominated Biggs for speaker, to muted applause in the chamber.

On the other side of the Capitol, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) celebrated a historic feat of his own, delivering floor remarks to commemorate his new record as the longest-serving leader in the upper chamber.

Although Republicans lost the White House in 2020, the Senate in 2021 and a Senate seat in the 2022 midterms, McCarthy has guided House Republicans to gains in the previous two cycles. He has traveled the country raising huge sums of money and tying himself closely to former President Trump, who himself has been unable to persuade conservative members of the House to back McCarthy for speaker, a powerful post that would put him second in line to the presidency behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

House GOP candidates fell far short of expectations last cycle, leaving the party with a razor-thin 222-212 majority over Democrats until the late Rep. Donald McEachin (D-Va.) is replaced in a special election later this year, likely by the Democratic nominee. And Democratic leaders are already bullish on their prospects for taking back control of the chamber in 2024.

McCarthy handily won an internal House Republican Conference vote for speaker in November against Biggs, by 188-31. The full GOP leadership slate elected in November included Reps. Steve Scalise (R-La.) as majority leader, Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) as majority whip, Stefanik as conference chair and Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) as chair of House Republicans’ campaign arm, the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Only the speaker’s post requires a full vote of the House, during which the winning candidate must receive a majority of all members present and voting. The chaos on the House floor only feeds into Democrats’ narrative that House Republicans are incapable of governing.

After the House chaplain’s prayer — and before the roll call votes for speaker commenced — reporters seated above the House floor in the gallery heard Rep. Juan Vargas (D-San Diego) say, “Let the show begin.” And during his vote, Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) cast his vote for the “current vote leader,” Jeffries.

“The 118th Congress has yet to begin and Americans are already seeing how dysfunctional and disastrous GOP control of the House is going to be,” Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.), chair of the the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee — House Democrats’ campaign arm — said in a statement. “While House Republicans fight one another in unprecedented ways, and Kevin McCarthy gives into the most extreme flanks of the Republican party in desperate plays for their support, Democrats are clear minded, unified and eager to get to work for the American people. No matter who becomes Speaker of the House or how many votes it takes, the contrast is clear and in two short years voters will reject this MAGA chaos and confusion.”

WASHINGTON —  House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy

Between continued skepticism and trouble at Meta, it’s not hard to think the future is a bit bleak for the metaverse — but rumors of its demise might be premature.

In a recent survey of 9,000 consumers, the professional services firm Accenture found that 55 percent of respondents said they wanted to become “active users” of the metaverse. And of those meta-optimists, said Kevan Yalowitz, the firm’s global software and platforms lead, 90 percent wanted to make that leap within the next year.

In the meantime, other companies are busy. HTC — which produced the Vive line of VR headsets — is openly teasing a portable follow-up product designed to compete with Meta’s popular Quest 2. Others, including Sharp and Canon, are getting ready to show off prototypes and experiences that could give still more people ways and reasons to dive into virtual spaces. And, after years of anticipation, this may be the year Apple finally releases a wearable screen.

None of that necessarily means you’ll find yourself moving through sprawling, immersive, interoperable worlds any sooner — just that people aren’t going to stop talking about it anytime soon.

Note: Deadline presents the 46th episode of its video series Take Two, in which Pete Hammond and Todd McCarthy tackle the artistry of films just opening in theaters every weekend. Each has reviewed and written about the craft for decades and built a remarkable breadth of knowledge of films past and present. What we hoped for when we asked them to do this was a concise, mature and thoughtful conversation comparable to what we saw from Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel.

For this final week of 2022, Take Two zeroes in on our individual takes on the year’s top five movies, a deeper video dive into those movies that made the cut, and including only one film that made both lists. There is also a fierce argument over a certain major award-winning film that one of us has in our Top 5 and the other couldn’t stand, in fact wanting to walk out on?

Earlier in the week, we both posted our annual 10 best list (and then some) on Deadline (read Pete’s here, and Todd’s here). Here we offer our final word — with pictures — on what we view are the best of 2022. Happy New Year.

MIKE’s music celebrates the relief of finding the right words. When his inner monologue tumbles out into the world, he basks in the weight of the disclosure. His love of the spoken word is almost devotional; in his heady songs, voicing a thought or emotion is akin to channeling the divine. On Beware of the Monkey, his self-produced 10th album, such revelations come frequently and forcefully. The record is self-assured and polyvalent, a current of shifting emotional states that MIKE’s exquisite word and production choices shape into rich affirmations.

MIKE sets the tone early. “This my only chance left, to prove to y’all, I’m the best rapper in the fuckin’ world,” he says in the opening seconds of “As 4 Me,” a combo of confidence and urgency that’s present throughout the record. His normally lethargic raps now come with vigor and resolve as he takes stock of the comforts his music career has provided him and vows to support his family and himself. If past albums were journals where he logged secret fears and private observations, this one is a treaty—a public and binding mission statement. “Live like it’s my all, gotta give a bunch,” he says on soulful opener “nuthin i can do is wrng.” His verses throughout have the conviction of oaths.

MIKE has long been a commanding performer whose wounded baritone could draw you in even as his hazy words pushed you away, but here he is inviting and forthcoming. He’s not exactly an open book, but his constant mentions of forward momentum make his oblique references to anxiety and stress more engrossing. “Navy in the sea, shit we steering till the sea waveless,” he raps on the woozy “Ezcema.” Backed by dancehall legend Sister Nancy on the upbeat “Stop Worry!,” MIKE honors his late mother and pledges to push through pain and doubt. “I peep your hustle and ya brains ma/I hold the deed, I can’t fumble on the game shot,” he raps, the last line accented by the sound of a basketball crisply spilling through a net. This sure-shot demeanor makes his words feel even more carefully chosen.

Amid the flexes, MIKE still waxes about depression and losing loved ones, but he seems more intent on weaving those emotions into a wider patchwork of experiences. On the aptly named “Tapestry,” he ties his woes to his achievements. “Dread and blasphemy/Sitting ’laxed in my apartment where these raps put me,” he says with gratitude, his dexterous slow flow expanding and compressing his words like a lung processing air. He has never branded himself a sadboi or bluesman like, say, Rod Wave or Morray, but he clearly seeks to ballast his melancholy with his passions and interests: basketball, punchlines, romance, family. A weepy voicemail from his sister that closes “Ipari Park” and opens “Swoosh 23” captures the range of the music—her tearful words are as jubilant and encouraging as they are glum.

TMKOC director Malav Rajda with his wife

There were rumours that Malav Rajda quit TMKOC due to differences with the producers but he clarified that he was leaving only because he wanted to get out of his comfort zone.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is among the biggest hits on Indian television. The show enjoys a massive fan following and has been a part of our lives for 14 years. However, lately, TMKOC has suffered many jolts with many actors parting ways with the show. Shailesh Lodha, who played the character of Taarak Mehta since its inception quit the show last year. Now, the show’s director Malav Rajda has also parted ways with it.

There were rumours that Malav Rajda quit the show due to differences with the producers of TMKOC but the director clarified that he was leaving the show only because he wanted to ‘get out of his comfort zone’ and ‘grow creatively’

In an interview with the Hindustan Times, he said, “After doing the show for 14 years, I thought I had gone into a comfort zone. I thought to grow creatively it was best to move out and challenge myself”. He further added, “If you are set out to do good work, there will be creative differences within the team but it’s always to improve the show. I had no fallout with the production house. I only have gratitude for the show and for Asit bhai (Modi, show producer)”.

He also talked about his 14-year-long association with the show and called it a ‘beautiful’ journey. He said that he has not only earned money and fame but also found his life partner from the show. Malav is married to actor Priya Ahuja who portrayed the role of Rita Shrivastava, a reporter on the show.

The super-hit show premiered on SAB TV in 2008 and has been the longest-running show on Indian Television. It has undergone several changes in its star cast as many actors left the show. The serial has also witnessed the exit of Neha Mehta and Gurucharan Singh. Fans are still hopeful and are waiting for the return of their much-loved character Dayaben on the screen.

Welcome To Chippendales

Welcome To Chippendales
Screenshot: YouTube/Hulu

An ending can make or break a series. While I can’t imagine the final moments of Welcome To Chippendales inspiring the same kind of discourse as, say, a certain cut to black, I have to admit I was left speechless when the final credits rolled in the series’ concluding episode. Endings, after all, can help not only punctuate an eight-episode narrative arc but also stress what audiences are to take away from such a journey. So, what are we to make of the final fantasy sequence that closes out this uneven, ambitious exploration of the violent and criminal history of Chippendales, which as the title card reminds us, is “bigger than ever” these days?

At first, I have to admit I laughed out loud. Could this Rajiv Joseph and Robert Siegel-penned episode really have ended with a vision of Steve overseeing a thriving Chippendales venue, happily sharing a Coke with his wide-eyed wife, success at his fingertips, unaware of what’s to come? Surely the juxtaposition of such a raucous vibe with the image of Steve’s corpse being wheeled away in an ambulance after he took his own life awaiting sentencing was to be taken as comical, yes? Or ironic, perhaps? There’s a suggestion that, with his death, Chippendales was able to return to those early glory days. But also that Steve’s many crimes have been wiped away, figments of a more just world that does not exist in a bleary-eyed vision of a club full of women clamoring to see men take their tear-away pants for their pleasure.

That this image of the club features no sign of Nick nor Denise (no Ray, even) suggests we’re in Steve’s mind. Here is a Chippendales scrubbed of anyone else’s input or insight. It’s his alone, embalmed for his pleasure. And ours, it seems. I understand the desire to end with a kind of black comedic punchline. Yet I am not convinced it works. Or, if it does work, I was left wondering what point it was trying to make. It can’t possibly tie into the impunity Steve’s death precipitated. Nor the tragedy of this once promising entrepreneur. Sure, Chippendales outlived (and continues to outlive him—not to mention, outrun his basest instincts), but is that final image meant to be an indictment of his practices or of the system that created him?

As a fantasy prologue, it muddies rather than clarifies Welcome To Chippendales’ purpose. Unless we distill it to mere entertainment; it is much more engaging to end with Nanjiani and a stripping number than with the dour image of Steve’s listless body being wheeled away as two EMTs talk about how much of a hit Chippendales remains (even if, arguably, I also find that scripted moment just as if not more cringe-worthy than this hallucinatory dream vision).

Perhaps I’m overthinking what Siegel and company were trying to convey with such a choice. They did spend the entire final episode less focused on the business at hand and more on an all too elaborate ruse in Switzerland that finally brought Steve to justice. Well, “justice” given that he never did get to be sentenced; justice for what and to whom, we’re left to ask.

For its last few episodes, I bemoaned the way Welcome To Chippendales all but lost its plot. As I’m sure you’re gleaming, the final episode did not stick the landing and made me wonder if I needed even to reassess my excitement for its initial installments. As I suspected, we left much of our story behind and find ourselves now in Switzerland where Ray and Steve are wrapped up in a John le Carré-esque cat-and-mouse entrapment. It remains unclear when this happened because timing and calendar markings haven’t been a strength of Hulu’s limited series.

On paper, this setup brims with possibility. A talky two-hander between two characters allows the series to cram in plenty of exposition into its final hour; there’s an elegant simplicity to it. Best to stay with Steve and his right-hand man and use their incriminating conversation to tie up the show’s many loose ends. This is, after all, the moment where it all finally catches up with Steve. Why not experience it in real-time, almost? And yet there’s a listlessness to their exchange that never quite delivers the tension-building rapport you often get in similarly-framed scenes. Honestly, Ray’s attempts to get Steve to confess to his crimes may have been real and true, but boy do they come off as hilariously amateurish.

Try as they might, the Welcome To Chippendales folks can’t successfully refashion their montage-fueled, ’80s-flared dark comedy into a tense spy/FBI thriller. And that’s before it shifts into groan-worthy “haunted by past sins” territory with a literal ghost spewing out the many sins Steve committed in the name of success. “When you’re someone like me you can’t stop fighting,” he tells the ghost of Nick (himself, really) while thinking back to all the heinous things he convinced himself he had to do to succeed. There may be truth to that—after all, he’d bought into a system that would never have allowed him to succeed or to reap the benefits of such success without a hefty price.

Hearing it spelled out so bluntly, it makes the show feel a lot more didactic than it ever had a right to be. Especially because, as Steve hears the taunts coming from a ghostly Nick (“You are on fucked up, dude”) all the show accomplishes is to, yet again, allow their vision of Steve to rebuke responsibility. In staging this inner monologue as a dialogue between Nick and Steve, the show presents yet another way for Steve to not wholly own up to what he’s done or what he set out to do. Agency, as ever with Welcome To Chippendales’s “Steve,” is elusive. Not even at his lowest is he allowed a modicum of critical self-awareness that’s not filtered through another character.

Therein lies the failure of Welcome To Chippendales. Rather than excavating the inner workings of the real-life Somen “Steve” Banerjee, all it does is (in keeping with that final fantasy sequence) prettify its effects for an agog audience who’s left with very little insight into why such a tragic “American dream gone bad” story ever came to be. But hey, at least we got plenty of fab stripping numbers in the process.

Stray observations

  • Murray Bartlett (and Nick, really) deserves better than playing a Ghost of Chippendales past. Honestly, the more I think about the many choices made in this final episode, the more questions I’m left with. (Actually, it’s probably just one question: Why?)
  • Along those same lines, Nanjiani deserves better. Getting to deliver lines like “That’s what makes it even more impressive. That I’m doing it all by myself. That’s how it started, right? With just me. I thought of it. Without me there is no Chippendales,” is hard to watch. There is no nuance by the end of the show, just telegraphed ideas that spell out exactly how Steve feels and flatten out any complexity he may have harbored in real life. He is reduced to a failed businessman who parrots the same ideas over and over.
  • I’m just gonna say it: The episode needed more Evan Jonigkeit (eating Twizzlers).
  • How apt that, following Steve’s lead, this episode is all done in the service of Irene and yet we see no sight of her until she shows up in a fantasy sequence where she’s a picture-perfect, happy, dutiful wife.

The series from the creators of “Dark” premiered its first-and-only season this November.

The steamship Kerberos has already sunk. Netflix has canceled “1899,” the sci-fi period drama from the creators of “Dark,” after just one season, it was announced Monday.

Baran bo Odar, who co-created the series along with his partner Jantje Friese, announced the news via a post on his Instagram account. “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” the statement from Odar and Friese reads. “We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life. We know that will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

“1899” premiered in November, and was only streaming on Netflix for six weeks before cancellation. During its first week of availability, the show was ranked number two on the streamer’s weekly top 10 series chart, behind “The Crown,” and garnered roughly 79.27 million hours of viewership across four days of availability.

A multilingual program produced in Germany and set in 1899 (hence the title), the show focused on various passengers aboard the steamship Kerberos traveling from Southampton in the UK to New York City in the United States, as various bizarre and possibly supernatural events start occurring on board. The show featured a large ensemble — including Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, Jonas Bloquet, Rosalie Craig, Maciej Musiał, Clara Rosager, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Maria Erwolter, Alexandre Willaume, Tino Mewes, Isaak Dentler, Fflyn Edwards, and Anton Lesser — and the performers spoke in their native language, resulting in a series that featured English, German, Spanish, French, Polish, Danish, Portuguese, and Cantonese.

Before “1899,” Odar and Friese were best known for “Dark,” another Netflix original that focused on inhabitants of a German village that gets embroiled in a time travel conspiracy after the disappearance of a young boy. The series ran for three seasons released between 2017 and 2020, and received critical acclaim. Odar and Friese executive produced both shows, with Odar directing and Friese co-writing every episode.

“1899” was the first project of an overall deal that Odar and Friese set with Netflix following the success of “Dark,” in a first for a European creator with the streamer. The pair stated they had a three season plan for the show similar to “Dark,” and the final episode of its one and only season ended on a major cliffhanger teasing a second season, one that will now be left hanging.

Like “Dark,” “1899” received largely positive reviews upon release, with critics praising its ambition. In a review for IndieWire, critic Steve Greene wrote “part of the show’s appeal is watching each new episode turn over another card, discovering what specific kind of conflict waits on the other side.”

A Monday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals was suspended Monday after Bills player Damar Hamlin took a hit that required emergency medical personnel to administer CPR for a reported nine minutes.

Per ESPN announcer Joe Buck, who was calling the game being held in Cincinnati, Bills safety Hamlin went down around 8:55 pm, stood and then collapsed soon after. When the broadcast came back from a commercial break, the team had gathered around Hamlin and the emergency medical personnel who were treating him on the field. Buck later told the audience that EMTs had been administering CPR to Hamlin for at least nine minutes.

After Hamlin was removed from the field, the game was set to resume but soon was temporarily suspended. Players on both teams appeared shocked, some in tears, as they returned to their locker rooms. Buck later reported that the ambulance left the stands shortly after 9 pm. Hamlin’s family accompanied him to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was in critical condition, per the NFL.

The game was temporarily suspended after Hamlin’s injury. The NFL officially suspended the game at 10 pm.

A University of Pittsburgh alumni, Hamlin was drafted by the Bills in 2021, in the sixth round. Heading into Jan. 2, across 15 games this season he has the second-most total tackles for the Bills, with 91 (tying fellow safety Matt Milano and trailing only LB Tremaine Edmunds’ 95).

It’s been a notable year for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw. She earned her first Emmy nomination with her debut Marvel project, the Disney+ series Loki, then was praised for her work on the studio’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will wrap the season as one of the highest-grossing films of the year. At press time, it had passed the $400 million mark at the domestic box office and earned $767.8 million worldwide.

She landed the gig when director Ryan Coogler’s frequent collaborator and her friend, DP Rachel Morrison, had a scheduling conflict and was unavailable to work on the sequel to the 2018 hit. “When Rachel found out that she was unable to shoot Panther 2, she brought my name up,” explains Durald Arkapaw, who like Morrison is an AFI grad. “Obviously, I was already interested. But after speaking to Ryan and meeting him, it just solidified that for me, because he’s a very special individual.”

At that point, Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed T’Challa/Black Panther, had died, and the script was being revised. The filmmakers chose not to recast T’Challa, but rather have the character die of an illness as the movie begins. “We would pay homage to him, and it would be very sensitive. I took it very seriously.”

On the visual style, she reflects that “what they did [on the original] was so groundbreaking. The intention this time was to explore that even further and give more scope to that world.” The film introduces new worlds and characters, and thematically, “we’re shining light more on our female protagonists … dealing with grief, rebirth.” Durald Arkapaw used anamorphic lenses for a wider view. “The glass that we chose renders some more vintage qualities, more aberrations, has a dreamier quality,” she says. She and Coogler wanted the lighting to feel natural and real.

Most of the film was shot in Atlanta, but there were additional location shoots, including an intimate scene lensed on a beach in Puerto Rico. There, Letitia Wright’s Shuri burns clothes and allows herself to grieve her brother. And, as part of the end credits (spoiler alert!), she meets Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), who reveals that she and T’Challa had a son. “Ryan and I wanted to [shoot] at the end of the day. That was the best light for the angle we wanted. And we got a little bit lucky; there was a lot of wind that day, and the trees were blowing. There wasn’t a ton of cloud cover. You got that nice, beautiful flare coming in the lens.”

She continues, “Their performance is so sensitive and beautiful. That’s one of the most impactful things I’ve ever shot, as far as everything timing out to be so beautiful and natural. And on a beach in Puerto Rico, where we’re watching the sunset right behind her …”

Durald Arkapaw adds: “It encapsulates what this movie is. It’s about family, and it’s about rebirth. It’s about trying to let go of grief, but it does stay with you, and sometimes you have to carry it with you, and you’re reminded of it. It’s one of the most beautiful endings I think I’ve seen.”

When Baaba Maal was growing up in Podor, a small northern town in Senegal situated along the river, he was expected to join the local workforce. Fishing is the main driver of Podor’s economy, but Maal’s family was open to other options: farmer, doctor, lawyer. Instead, Maal befriended local musician Mansour Seck, studied music in Dakar and Paris, and has released a steady stream of albums since the mid-1980s. Maal’s inventive marriage of traditional and electronic instruments have led him to cross-genre collaborations with Brian Eno, Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, and even Mumford & Sons. More recently, he teamed up with composer Ludwig Göransson on the soundtrack for Black Panther and its sequel Wakanda Forever.

Conceptually, “Yerimayo Celebration”—the lead single to Being, Maal’s first album in seven years—is about honoring tradition: The title translates to “the fisherman’s celebration,” a direct reference to Maal’s hometown. The song is a roaring, triumphant stomp: Maal enlisted percussionist Momadou Sarr, whose drums pound like a band of horses on tightly packed dirt, as Maal’s multi-tracked vocals swirl over stretched out pangs of synthesizer. Plucked strings from the West African ngoni guitar rustle underneath, adding a metallic brightness. Anchored by Cheikh Ndoye’s earthy bass, the song feels more tied to terra firma than the water—perhaps signaling when catch arrives on dry land, commencing feast and festivity.
