HBO Max’s Last of Us series will be premiering in January, 2023

The most highly anticipated post-apocalyptic video game brought to life will be coming to us on HBO/HBO Max in a nine-episode first season. It will be available to stream in 4K on HBO Max. Based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name which was developed by Naughty Dog exclusively for the PlayStation® platforms, is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and is executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam. Production companies: PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog.

What is the show about?

The show takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Ellie Williams

Ellie Williams is the central character of The Last of Us series. She serves as the protagonist of The Last of Us: American Dreams, the playable deuteragonist of The Last of Us, and the playable protagonist of both The Last of Us: Left Behind and The Last of Us Part II. She grew up as an orphan in the Boston quarantine zone and attended a military preparatory school, where she met and befriended Riley Abel. When Ellie was fourteen, the pair were both infected with the Cordyceps brain infection, where Ellie discovered she was immune. A friend of her mother’s and the leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, believed that she was the key to reverse engineering a vaccine. Marlene tasked Joel Miller, a smuggler, with escorting Ellie outside of the QZ. The simple drop-off turned into a year-long journey across America, and the two eventually formed a close bond.

Joel Miller

Joel Miller is the playable protagonist of The Last of Us, and a supporting character in The Last of Us: Left Behind and The Last of Us Part II, in which he is briefly playable. Joel was a survivor in post-apocalyptic America that had been ravaged by the Cordyceps brain infection. After losing his only daughter Sarah in the early stages of the outbreak, Joel became a ruthless and cynical smuggler eventually tasked with smuggling and protecting Ellie Williams, a young girl who was the key to mankind’s survival. Joel eventually formed a strong bond with her.

Tommy Miller

Tommy Miller is a supporting character in The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II. He is Joel’s younger brother, and Sarah’s paternal uncle. A caring and compassionate man, Tommy survived the early years of the outbreak with Joel. However, the two separated as Tommy sought a more meaningful life than mere survival, leading him to join the Fireflies and later seek redemption through his wife, Maria, and the community of Jackson.

Bill

From the video game series The Last of Us

Bill is a character who appears in The Last of Us. He is a survivor who maintains an uneasy alliance with Joel and Ellie.

Sarah Miller

From the video game series The Last of Us

Sarah Miller is the tertiary playable character and a supporting character in The Last of Us. She was the 12-year-old daughter of Joel before the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak.

Tess Servopoulos

From the video game series The Last of Us

Theresa “Tess” Servopoulos is a supporting character in The Last of Us. A hardened survivor, she was the long-term smuggling partner of Joel Miller. The pair made their living as smugglers in Boston, where they traded with survivors outside of the city. She had a “dog-eat-dog” philosophy, similar to Joel and Ellie.

Jerry Anderson

Gerald “Jerry” Anderson is a minor character in The Last of Us and a supporting character in The Last of Us Part II. He was the father of Abby and the lead doctor among the Fireflies who was trying to find a cure for the Cordyceps brain infection. A recording by him can be found detailing Ellie’s immunity in St. Mary’s Hospital.

David

From the video game series The Last of Us

David was the main antagonist of the winter chapter in The Last of Us, appearing as the leader of a group of cannibalistic survivors.

Cast includes Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nico Parker as Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Nick Offerman as Bill, Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen, Storm Reid as Riley, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Lamar Johnson as Henry, Keivonn Woodard as Sam, Graham Greene as Marlon, and Elaine Miles as Florence. Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker also star in the series.
