Reservation Dogs actress Devery Jacobs is speaking up about the portrayal of violence against indigenous people in Martin Scorsese‘s new film, Killers of the Flower Moon.

In a series of tweets Monday, the actress, who is Kanien’keha:ka, described the movie — which depicts the Osage murders — as “painful, grueling, unrelenting, and unnecessarily graphic” and described watching the film as “fucking hellfire.”

“Imagine the worst atrocities committed against [your] ancestors, then having to sit thru a movie explicitly filled [with] them, [with] the only respite being 30min long scenes of murderous white guys talking about/planning the killings,” she tweeted.

In her tweets, she critiqued Scorsese’s depiction of the atrocity. Based on the 2017 book of the same name by David Grann, the film centers on the Osage people of Oklahoma after the discovery of oil on their land and the white settlers who targeted them for their wealth. The film stars Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Lily Gladstone — whose acting Jacobs praised for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman.

“While all of the performances were strong, if you look proportionally, each of the Osage characters felt painfully underwritten, while the white men were given way more courtesy and depth,” she wrote.

While she noted Scorsese’s “technical direction” and said she understood how showing violence onscreen can “add brutal shock value,” Jacobs explained that she didn’t think the Osage people were shown “honor or dignity.” (Reps for Scorsese and Jacobs did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.)

“I believe that by showing more murdered Native women on screen, it normalizes the violence committed against us and further dehumanizes our people,” she wrote, before adding, “Indig ppl exist beyond our grief, trauma & atrocities. Our pride for being Native, our languages, cultures, joy & love are way more interesting & humanizing than showing the horrors white men inflicted on us.”

Jacobs also acknowledged the Osage people who were involved in making the film and “how cathartic” it must have been to make the film, but added that she would have rather seen “an Osage filmmaker telling this story” instead of someone like Scorsese.

“All in all, after 100 years of the way Indigenous communities have been portrayed in film, is this really the representation we needed?” she ended her thread.

Killers of the Flower Moon premiered on Oct. 20 after being shown at Cannes in May 2023. It debuted at $23 million at the box-office this weekend.

NEWPORT BEACH FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! Scott Steindorff’s Understanding Autism is a powerful documentary that brings a new perspective to this underrepresented group within American society. As someone on the spectrum myself, it brought out all the challenges and moments of optimism that occur in the life of an Autistic individual. Everything from singular-focused hobbies to anxiety issues was addressed with sympathy and respect. The documentary follows Scott Steindorff, our film’s Autistic director, as he learns about the intricacies of the spectrum across the country through the help of personal experiences and insight from researchers.

The film follows Steindorff’s personal journey in learning he was born Autistic, and he interviews both Autistic children and adults. Autism’s history is weaved in between the interviews. There are shocking reveals, such as Dr. Johann Asperger and his ties with Nazi Germany, as well as horrific electric shock treatments used in the early twentieth century to treat the condition. The importance of a solid educational experience is emphasized with a focus on private schools that help children on the spectrum. The film highlights the lack of enough private schools to help these students.

“…learns about the intricacies of the spectrum…through…personal experiences and insight from researchers.”

Man, this film made me cry on more than one occasion. Hearing from both the parents and other men and women on the spectrum was an emotional experience. The journey of self-discovery and finding a place within a cynical world was a refreshing message that the film provided. This is truly one of the most empathetic depictions of Autism on film. The only positive depiction I’ve seen in film/television was Brick Heck on the ABC sitcom The Middle. The documentary allows the audience to hear the ambitions of those with big dreams. For example, a New York teenager desires to be a train conductor due to his extraordinary knowledge of the subway system. If anything, this highlights why Autistic men and women need to be included in the American Dream.

While the documentary aims to provide a humanist perspective, it unfortunately caters to identity politics briefly. The subject matter is so broad it may be better explored as individual documentaries. The film also highlights contributions made by Autistic people, such as creating technology for space satellites and algorithms for social media sites. No famous names are recognized, and well-known figures like Elon Musk and Bill Gates should have been referenced. Regardless of these flaws, Steindorff’s documentary is an eye-opener to those unfamiliar with Autism. Hopefully, these inspiring stories will motivate parents and Autistic individuals to be resilient and fight to achieve their goals.

Understanding Autism screened at the 2023 Newport Beach Film Festival.

Chase Sui Wonders is getting cozy with Joe Keery after her split from Pete Davidson.

Wonders, 27, and the Stranger Things actor, 31, were spotted together in New York City on Sunday, October 22, according to photos obtained by Page Six. The twosome walked arm in arm while taking a stroll in the Big Apple, stopping a few times to look at Wonders’ phone and share a laugh.

Both Wonders and Keery were dressed appropriately for the chilly fall weather, with the Bodies, Bodies, Bodies star donning jeans, a black puffy coat and a gray wrap around her head. Keery, meanwhile, sported dark denim, a blue and yellow sweater and a navy blazer paired with a matching beanie. The duo both kept it low-key by each rocking a pair of sunglasses.

Wonders’ day with Keery comes two months after she and Davidson, 29, called it quits for good following less than one year of dating.

“There’s no bad blood or any hard feelings between them,” an insider exclusively told Us Weekly in August, noting that neither is to blame for the breakup. “Their relationship had simply run its course and they decided they just wanted different things.”

Wonders and Davidson met on the set of the 2022 horror film Bodies, Bodies, Bodies and sparked romance speculation that December when they attended a New York Rangers hockey game together. The pair fueled rumors even further with several more public appearances in the following months, from spending time together in NYC to a day at Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles.

In January, a second source told Us that Wonders and Davidson had “insane chemistry” on set of Bodies, Bodies, Bodies and that sparks flew even when “the cameras weren’t rolling.”

They later reunited for Davidson’s show Bupkis. At the April premiere of the Peacock series, Davidson called Wonders “the best,” telling Entertainment Tonight, “She’s the best actress. She’s gonna crush. She’s got a lot of cool stuff going on.”

Wonders opened up about her and Davidson’s romance one month later during an interview with Nylon magazine. “We talk about everything, and we are very open with each other about everything, and it feels like what’s happening in our relationship is very sacred,” she shared at the time.

While another insider told Us in June that the duo were spending their free time together “constantly laughing, joking around, and just having fun,” they hit a bump in the road the following month when Davidson was sentenced to complete community service and attend a traffic school for crashing his car into a Beverly Hills home earlier this summer. (Wonders was in the passenger seat at the time.) That same month, Davidson also checked into rehab for PTSD and borderline personality disorder.

Amazon MGM Studios has optioned the rights to Marisa Meltzer’s nonfiction page-turner “Glossy” about Glossier founder Emily Weiss for an upcoming TV series, Meltzer confirmed to TheWrap on Monday.

“Glossy: Ambition, Beauty and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss’ Glossier,” which was published in September and soon made the New York Times best-seller list, tells the story of how Weiss went from a Teen Vogue intern to a beauty blogger to founding her own successful cosmetics brand, Glossier.

According to several media reports, “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” director Lindsey Anderson Beer is attached to produce through her production company Lab Brew. Alexandra Banks and Spencer Walken will executive produce and no showrunner has yet been named.

While the behind-the-scenes business tell-all and accompanying prestige TV series — such as “Blackberry,” “Super Pumped; The Battle for Uber,” “The Dropout” and “WeCrashed” —  has become a cottage industry in Hollywood, Weiss’ story doesn’t end up with her in jail or court.

But her journey is still perfectly suited for adaptation: Per Simon & Schuster, the book solves the mystery of the often mysterious woman behind the go-to beauty brand: “Just how did a girl from suburban Connecticut with no real job experience work her way into the bathrooms and boudoirs of the most influential names in the world and build that access into a 1.9-billion-dollar business? Is she solely responsible for its success? And why, eight years later, at the height of Glossier mania, did she step down?”

For the book, Weiss spoke to former Glossier employees, investors, and Weiss herself. “From fundraising to product launches and unconventional hiring practices, Meltzer exposes the inner workings of Glossier’s culture, culminating in the story of Weiss herself,” touts the publisher.

When “Glossy” came out last month, the New York Times ran an opinion piece by Jessica Grose headlined C.E.O.s Don’t Need to Be Monsters, contrasting the book with Walter Isaacson’s “Elon Musk” bio of the X owner and SpaceX founder.

“Meltzer neither demonizes nor valorizes Weiss, showing that it’s possible to create a readable and propulsive book that admires a founder’s business acumen and market strategy without excusing her missteps as somehow a necessary byproduct of success,” wrote Grose.

‘The Mission’ Director Interview at IndieWire Art

Marco Vega, the butler on the second season of Peacock‘s The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip, filed a lawsuit alleging he was sexually assaulted by cast members Brandi Glanville and Phaedra Parks.

The suit filed on Friday in the state of New York lists as defendants Bravo, Forest Productions, Warner Bros., NBC Universal, Shed Media and Peacock.

Vega appeared in the second season of the series that brings in Real Housewives cast members from across the franchises. The second season was dubbed “Ex-Wives Club” and it featured the former housewives on a getaway to Dorinda Medley’s Blue Stone Manor in Massachusetts.

The suit states that Vega was hired as the butler for the show and “it was Ms. Glanville who on RHUGT in the Berkshires sexually harassed and abused MARCO VEGA.”

“Defendants had overwhelming prior notice of Ms. GLANVILLE’s prior deviant sexual proclivities and sexually harassing conduct,” reads the suit. “However, despite this knowledge, Defendants wrongfully continued to hire GLANVILLE for their shows. Defendants allowed, condoned and even encouraged Ms. GLANVILLE’s sexually aggressive and offensive conduct on others on the sets.”

Vega’s lawsuit says that Glanville should have never been hired “because they knew of her
tendency to sexually harass others.” The filing claims producers “encouraged” Glanville “to become drunk on the set so that she would be more likely to commit outrageous and harassing acts.”

Additionally, the suit states, “Defendants further encouraged other housewives such as Phaedra Parks and others to become inebriated and sexually harass others. As a result of Defendants’ actions and inactions, Ms. GLANVILLE and Phaedra Parks sexually abused and harassed MARCO VEGA causing him
emotional distress and other damages.”

The lawsuit against Bravo comes after former Real Housewives star Bethenny Frankel lawyered up to start a movement for reality stars to unionize amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. One of the reasons why many reality stars didn’t report misconduct was due to them signing NDAs but NBCUniversal says the contracts have never stopped participants from talking about the illegal activities.

Vega naming Glanville and Parks in the suit over sexual assault claims, comes as they both have faced similar allegations in the past. Glanville returned to RHUGT for Season 4 but led to an early exit after sexual assault claims from co-star Caroline Manzo during filming.

Glanville would later blame producers of the show and said she felt set up by them tweeting, “I was hired for a 2nd season of girls trip cuz they LOVED what I did on 1st season I was told to bring the party just like before & that’s exactly what I did & I was punished for it. It feels like a fucking set up. It’s BS & Caroline was fine.”

The season of RHUGT was supposed to air this year but was ultimately postponed until sometime in 2024 and swapped with RHONY Legacy.

Parks was a cast member on The Real Housewives of Atlanta between Season 3 and 9. The lawyer was dropped ahead of Season 10 after it was revealed she was behind a rumor that suggested her co-star Kandi Burruss and husband Todd Tucker wanted to drug Porsha Williams to take advantage of her sexually. Parks’ return to the Real Housewives universe was with the second season of RHUGT and is now a cast member of Married to Medicine Season 10.

Ram Siya Ram song from the 2023 movie, Adipurush, honours Lord Ram and Goddess Sita’s bond and adores their divine nature.

Dussehra is a time to celebrate the victory of good over evil. Get into the festive spirit with this playlist of the best movie songs!

Dussehra holds significant importance in Hindu culture, as it signifies the conclusion of Navratri and serves as a reminder of Lord Ram’s triumph over Ravan, who is believed to be a demon who abducted Goddess Sita. This festival involves the preparation for the immersion (‘Visarjan’) of Goddess Durga’s idols and the symbolic burning of Ravan’s effigies to honour Lord Ram’s victory.

As part of the celebrations, devotees often engage in music and songs. Here is a selection of some of the best Dussehra songs to enhance the festive spirit.

Top Bollywood songs for Dussehra celebrations

Ram Siya Ram

This amazing melody from the 2023 movie, Adipurush, is sung by Sachet-Parampara and can be a great choice for the occasion. The song honours Lord Ram and Goddess Sita’s bond and adores their divine nature.

Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram

The timeless bhajan dedicated to Lord Ram’s devotees was prominently featured in the 1998 movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. In this film, the song was rendered in both classical and Western musical styles. Artists like Alka Yagnik, Shankar Mahadevan, and Jatin-Lalit contributed towards the making of this song. The unique blend of classical and modern music elements would bring people of different age groups together on this auspicious day.

This song from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo hovers around the Dussehra festival and is sung by Aaman Trikha and Vinit Singh. It showcases how pure Lord Ram’s relationship was with Goddess Sita.

Tattad Tattad (Ram Ji Ki Chaal)

The 2013 movie, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, witnesses its climax on Dussehra and Ram Ji Ki Chaal steals the spotlight during the film’s finale. The song is beautifully sung by Aditya Narayan and can be a wonderful addition to your playlist if you’re looking for an energetic celebration on Dussehra.

Maa Sherawaliye

While Dussehra holds immense significance for Lord Ram’s devotees, we shouldn’t forget that this is the last day before Goddess Durga’s idols are immersed in water bodies. Therefore, dedicating a song to Goddess Durga or Maa Sherwali would be a great decision.

Ava DuVernay‘s moving drama “Origin,” which tells the story of author Isabel Wilkerson’s journey to write her famous nonfiction novel “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent,” is the latest film to be making the switch from an adapted screenplay run, to original. Deemed an original screenplay by the Writers Guild of America, the announcement comes after Variety reported “Barbie” from Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and “The Bikeriders” by Jeff Nichols, were also deemed original by the WGA. In addition to the aforementioned films, DuVernay’s script will also compete for one of the five coveted Oscar slots against other top-tier contenders such as “The Holdovers” from David Hemingson and “Past Lives” from Celine Song.

“Origin” boasts an all-star cast including Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard”), Jon Bernthal and Niecy Nash-Betts.

The original designation will stick for the crucial WGA Awards precursors in January, but when it comes to the Academy, the Writer’s Branch committee has the authority to move it elsewhere. We won’t know the answer to that question until voting begins.

In years past, films including “Moonlight” (2016) were campaigned and labeled as “original” by the WGA, due to the play it was based on never being published, but were moved to adapted by the committee. It went on to win the category, along with two other Oscars, including best picture. Other switched scripts over the years include nominees “Syriana” (2005) and “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” (2018) and non-nominated films like “Loving” (2016).

Following Isabel’s harrowing journey to write the bestseller, she grapples with tremendous personal tragedy, with the film inserting excerpts of the book through narration.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival before moving onto Toronto. It also recently added an original song to its Oscar prospects, “I Am,” sung by New Zealand Māori artist Stan Walker performed the new song, who also co-wrote it with Michael Fatkin, Vince Harder and Te Kanapu Anasta.

“Origin” will open in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 8 before going nationwide on Jan. 19, 2024.

The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.

The story for a possible Spider-Man 3 PlayStation installment from Insomniac Games was just teased by the Spider-Man 2 director.

After years of waiting, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is finally available on the PS5. The game stars both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, letting gamers take control of both heroes throughout the entire experience.

The story sees the Spider-Men dealing with a new threat in Kraven the Hunter while also grappling with the corrupting Symbiote, which eventually turns into Venom himself. Other villains appear as well—such as Mysterio, Sandman, and the Lizard.

PlayStation’s Spider-Man 3 Story Could Be ‘Epic’

Insomniac

In an interview with Skill Up, Spider-Man 2 Creative Director Bryan Intihar was asked what he might want to do for a possible Spider-Man 3.

While he managed to skirt around the question mostly, Intihar ended up teasing, “[he] think[s] it’d be pretty epic:”

“I think… if ‘Spider-Man 1’ [and ‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales’] was like… our ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Spider-Man 2’ was like a [‘Captain America:] Civil War’, where do we go? Where logically do we go from there? I think it’d be pretty epic. But you know, we’ll see.”

Spider-Man 2 Game Director Ben Arfmann previously shared, “[He’d] love to be able to talk about [Spider-Man 3]” and that they’d “be so lucky to get to tell more stories:”

“I mean, I would love to be able to talk about [‘Spider-Man 3’]. We love this game [and] so excited about this game. I’m really hoping that fans love it in the same way that we do. And we’re going to be so lucky to get to tell more stories. [But], for right now, I think what we can talk about is the game that comes out October 20.”

What Villains Might Fight Spider-Man for Round 3?

The rest of this article contains spoilers for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

When it comes to Spider-Man 3, Insomniac Games certainly has its hands full with potential storylines.

For one, there’s the obvious Green Goblin introduction that is on its way. Norman Osborn is a broken man who is actively developing the G-Serum—he’s even offered to work with Otto Octavius again.

Venom himself is also likely not dead, and perhaps fans can see what remains of the Symbiote finding and bonding with Eddie Brock. The timing here could be perfect, and a future DLC or larger experience might pit the anti-hero against Cletus Kasady’s Carnage.

Speaking of the Symbiotes, Spider-Man 2 has the mark of Knull throughout it.

Knull is the Symbiote God who happens to be one of the strongest beings in existence. Some might think this story could be too big for the game to reasonably handle, but the foundation has been laid if Insomniac wants to continue building on it.

Then, of course, there’s the Cindy Moon tease, a character who goes on to become the wall-crawling hero Silk.

Insomniac could go in so many directions for future installments, though it’s hard to tell when Spider-Man 3 will arrive. It could easily be another five years, which is the time it took between the first two entries—the sequel might not even arrive on the PS5, but the PS6 instead.

Hopefully, whenever it is finished, the studio can manage to fully realize and share as many of these stories as possible.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is now available to purchase for the PlayStation 5.

With filming on Superman: Legacy presumably kicking off in the spring of 2024, new images posted by the film’s VFX supervisor got fans thinking about the Fortress of Solitude.

The Fortress of Solitude is Superman’s secret headquarters. It’s usually located in the snowy tundras of the Arctic and is more or less Clark Kent’s version of the Batcave.

In many interpretations of the Fortress, such as in The CW’s Supergirl, it also houses a great deal of objects and technology from other planets, which Kal-El keeps under lock and key to avoid endangering Earth.

Superman: Legacy’s Fortress of Solitude?

DC

According to multiple social media posts, James Gunn and Superman: Legacy VFX supervisor Stephane Ceretti recently took a trip to Norway.

The photos that were shared by Ceretti (via homeofdcu on X) and Gunn (also via homeofdcu) gave way to speculation from fans that the location they were visiting could potentially be used for the Fortress of Solitude, given the snowy surroundings.

An Instagram post showing the Northern Lights in Norway
Stephane Ceretti’s Instagram

Considering that Legacy is slated to begin filming next spring, it would make some sense that the crew would be doing location scouting at this time.

Additionally, Gunn mentioned on Threads that the movie would be shot both on soundstages and in various locations around the globe:

“No no shooting on soundstages in Atlanta – rest of film in places all over the world.”

What Role Could the Fortress Play in Legacy?

Assuming that the Fortress of Solitude actually does make an appearance in Superman: Legacy, what kind of impact could its inclusion have on the plot?

For starters, it would make a ton of sense for the Fortress to already be an established thing in the DCU. Legacy doesn’t focus on a rookie Supes, learning his powers and going through his origin.

Instead, he’s an already-established hero. So, it seems logical for the Fortress of Solitude to be sitting out in the Arctic when the film opens.

Maybe Clark needs to use the Fortress’ computer to research info on the movie’s villain? Maybe there’s a crucial piece of tech being kept there that Superman needs? Or perhaps, as a show of trust, he brings Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane to his HQ so she can learn about his Kryptonian history?

And on the topic of location scouting, it will be interesting to see if any major U.S. cities are used to stand in for Metropolis in the DCU. Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies famously utilized Chicago for Gotham, and several Chicago landmarks were, in fact, noticeable in the trilogy.

DC Studios’ Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.

Even shooting on a $80,000 camera won’t save your project when you have bad audio. However, if you shoot on a terrible camera but have fantastic audio, you’ll probably get a round of applause from all the arthouse folks.

Suffice it to say, getting clean and crisp audio is the most important thing you can do for your project.

For this “Deals of the Week,” we discovered different audio tools on sale for varying needs.

Which one will you need for your next project?

Handheld Audio Recorder

The handheld audio recorder with a built-in mic has been a popular solution for on-the-go filmmakers and those on a budget. Not only are they great for capturing audio on set form different sources, but you can even take these units and use them in post for foley, ADR, and temp audio.

TASCAM Portacapture X8 Field Recorder

With its large touchscreen, detachable mics, 32-bit float resolution to avoid clipping, and tailored modes for music, field, podcast, and voice recording applications, the TASCAM Portacapture X8 portable handheld multitrack recorder makes it incredibly easy to capture up to six individual tracks of high-resolution audio for common production scenarios.

Yaroslav Altunin

Portable Field Recorder

This next form factor is a bit more “stay in one place” than handheld. While creatives can still lug it around as a portable recorder, it feels more at home in a sound bag or on your camera rig. What makes these types of units more appealing is that they usually come with more robust features and are better at being integrated into your existing toolkit.

Zoom F3 Portable Field Recorder

Two premium mic preamps and 32-bit float technology make the F3 a powerful little tool. It can capture the softest and loudest sounds you can throw at it, all while avoiding distortion, maintaining low-noise performance, and freeing you from the responsibility of adjusting gain. Two balanced mic/line inputs with locking XLR jacks and switchable +48V phantom power make the F3 an ideal match for professional microphones

Wireless Microphone Systems

The clip-on lavaliere system has evolved a bit in the past few years. From thin wires and little mics that you hide behind your clothes, newer audio systems do away with wires altogether and want you to proudly wear the microphone for all to see. These types of tools are perfect for quick interviews, broadcast, or other fast-paced documentary projects.

Hollyland LARK M1 Wireless Mic System

Record up to two people in mobile journalism or content creation applications using this black, 2.4 GHz LARK M1 DUO Wireless Microphone System from Hollyland. The system includes two transmitters with built-in, omnidirectional microphones, a dual-channel receiver, and a charging case—all with a compact form factor. Clips on the back of each transmitter allow you to attach them to the lapel of a shirt.

Yaroslav Altunin

A Reliable Classic (Honorable Mention)

This handheld recorder from Zoom probably isn’t something you’d want in your kit, as it’s a few years older than the other units on this list. But remember how I said you can use these types of recorders for practically anything? Well, this was the recorder I used for over a decade. I still have it in my gear closet, and it works just as well as it did before. Sure, it doesn’t have 32-bit float recording, but it’s built like a tank, and it hasn’t let me down yet.

I recorded everything from live production, musical theater, foley, ADR, and on-set audio with this recorder.

Zoom H4n Pro Handheld Recorder

Ideal for guitarists, bassists, and vocalists looking to produce studio-quality tracks on a single travel-friendly device, the brown Zoom H4n Portable Handheld Recorder with Onboard Stereo Microphone Capsule and versatile mic/line/instrument inputs lets you record up to four tracks of high-resolution audio in the palm of your hand.

“Our Flag Means Death” debuted in 2022 with a breakout hit first season, but the Max Original series had an atypical path to success — audiences discovered it gradually and continued doing so even after its finale.

That unusual trajectory helped the show to have even longer-lasting demand than series that had more immediately successful premieres.  In its second season, which premiered on Oct. 5, “Our Flag Means Death” is building on that fanbase and reaching new levels of success.

Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights to adapt “Glossy,” about the beauty brand and its founder Emily Weiss, into a television series, Variety has confirmed.

Sources tell Variety that “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” director Lindsey Anderson Beer and her production company Lab Brew are attached to produce, with Alexandra Banks and Spencer Walken on board as executive producers. The production, which is currently in early development, is searching for a showrunner; Beer will not write the series, the sources shared.

“Glossy: Ambition, Beauty and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss’ Glossier,” written by journalist and author Marisa Meltzer, was released in early September by Simon & Schuster and became an instant New York Times bestseller.

Per the publisher’s official description, the roughly 300-page book “combines in-depth interviews with former Glossier employees, investors, and Weiss herself to bring you inside the walls of this fascinating and secretive company. From fundraising to product launches and unconventional hiring practices, Meltzer exposes the inner workings of Glossier’s culture, culminating in the story of Weiss herself.”

The description continues, “At the center of the story lies Emily Weiss, the elusive former Teen Vogue ‘superintern’ on the reality show ‘The Hills’ turned Into the Gloss beauty blogger who had the vision, guts, and searing ambition needed to launch Glossier. She cannily turned every experience, every meeting into an opportunity to fuel her own personal success. Together with her expensive, signature style and singular vision for the future of consumerism, she could not be stopped. Just how did a girl from suburban Connecticut with no real job experience work her way into the bathrooms and boudoirs of the most influential names in the world and build that access into a 1.9-billion-dollar business? Is she solely responsible for its success? And why, eight years later, at the height of Glossier mania, did she step down?”

Israel’s armed forces have massed tens of thousands of soldiers, tanks, heavy armour and artillery along the Gaza border ahead of a much-anticipated ground assault that aims to crush Hamas in retaliation for the group’s ruthless October 7 attacks.

On the face of it, the conflict looks to be a considerable mismatch.

Despite its bloodthirsty slaughter of thousands of Israeli civilians and its considerable stockpiles of rockets, Hamas is ultimately a political group with a heavily armed militia.

Israel meanwhile boasts one of the most advanced militaries in the world, with state of the art equipment and technology.

The IDF currently has 169,500 active military personnel and 465,000 reservists – a large portion of whom have now been called up by the Israeli government. This equates to the world’s third largest active military per-capita, and the world’s sixth largest reserve military by the same metric.

By contrast, Hamas is thought to have as many as 40,000 fighters, all of whom are crammed into Gaza, a small 140-square-mile strip of land home to more than 2.3 million people – with limited training and resources.

But military experts are reluctant to suggest an armed Israeli incursion into Gaza will be a walk in the park.

Defenders are typically thought to have a 3-1 advantage over attackers, and Israel’s troops would face gruelling urban and guerrilla warfare, with Hamas springing traps against the IDF at every chance they get.

Some analysts have drawn comparisons to the Battle of Mosul (2016-2017), in which the western-backed Iraqi government eventually prevailed in liberating the city from its ISIS conquerors – but only at a huge cost of military and civilian life.

With this in mind, MailOnline breaks down the military capabilities of both sides ahead of Israel’s ground assault.

Israel

Israel’s military has long been supported by the US with $3.3 billion in congressionally mandated annual funding, plus another $500 million toward missile defence technology that protects its skies from Hamas rockets.

As such, it is one of the best-armed nations in the wider Middle East. Its air force includes the advanced American F-35 fighter jet, missile defence batteries including the American-made Patriot, and the famous Iron Dome system.

Israel has armoured personnel carriers and tanks, and a fleet of drones and other technology available to support any street-to-street battles.

It even has a purpose built fake city, the Urban Warfare Training Center – known colloquially as ‘Mini Gaza’ – to train its troops in the art of close-quarter urban combat.

What’s more, the Jewish state has some 170,000 troops typically on active duty and has called up some 360,000 reservists for the war – three-fourths of its estimated capacity, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

And the country – which spends more than 5 per cent of its GDP on the IDF (the Israeli Ground Forces, the Israeli Air Force, and the Israeli Navy) – has around three million people who are fit for military service, having at some point in their lives undertaken mandatory military service of around three years.

Beyond its ground capabilities, Israel has also long maintained an undeclared nuclear weapons program, with high-end missile capabilities that act as a serious deterrent against any country in the region from getting involved.

SMALL ARMS

Israel’s army has access to a wide range of small arms, but the X95 Bullpup Assault Carbine is standard issue among IDF soldiers and is produced by Israeli Weapon Industries (IWI).

Its bullpup build, meaning the firing grip is in front of where magazines are loaded, means it is generally lighter and more maneuverable than other rifles of a similar size.

The carbine, a smaller and more lightweight type of rifle, weighs just over six-and-a-half pounds, and can fire up to 1000 rounds per minute.

However, the magazine holds just 30 rounds, meaning a soldier would have to reload their weapons after less than two seconds of holding the trigger down.

Its Pic Rail attachment system, running on top of the weapon, is most often used to attach red-dot sightings, but the X95 also comes with a folding iron sight as a back-up.

It has been the standard issue weapon for the IDF since November 2009, replacing the US-made M16 and the M4 as the go-to weapon for Israeli troops.

Meanwhile, the M203 grenade launcher can be bolted onto a variety of standard issue IDF guns, including the X95.

The launcher is able to fire grenades at targets up to 380 yards away, though is much more effective at 160 yards.

It is a widely used weapon, and can be found in the service of notable units including Ireland’s Army Ranger Wing and the UK’s Special Air Service.

IDF soldiers also regularly carry the Negev light machinegun that was developed in the late 1980s.

The belt-fed system can fire bullets up to 1,300 yards, though it is only effective up to 870 yards.

The weapon can fire up to 1,050 rounds per minute, depending on the fire-rate setting chosen by its carrier.

Weighing just 16 lbs, the weapon is well-liked by Israeli soldiers due to its ease of use and maneuverability in the field, as it can be used by just one person, according to modernfirearms.net.

TANKS, IFVs and APCs

Since the establishment of the state of Israel, the country’s military has used a broad variety of tanks, including both domestic and foreign-made models.

While it has been provided with several different models of foreign-made machines by its allies throughout its history, Israel’s military began research and development work on a domestically produced tank in the mid-1960s.

While there have been various Israeli-made tanks, the IDF’s main battle tank today is the domestically made Merkava, the latest version of which is the Merkava Mark 5 ‘Barak’ (Lightning), which entered service this year.

The IDF spent decades perfecting the state-of-the-art war machines, which are specifically designed to excel in an urban warfare environment.

Dating all the way back to the Mark 1 in the 1970s, Merkava models have made up the backbone of the IDF’s ground forces, with around 490 in service today.

As with the Mark 4, the Merkava 5 features a 120mm main gun that can fire a variety of ammunition up to 4,000 meters, while also being equipped with a machine gun.

It is also equipped with a ‘Trophy’ active protection system (APS) designed to protect vehicles from anti-tank missiles, a 360-degree day/night camera coverage for increased situational awareness as well as a fighter jet-style helmet-mounted display for the tank’s commander that provides the operator with a host of information.

For example, the helmet can provide the driver with a 3D view of the battlefield around the tank, as well as information about potential targets, which ammunition should be fired, and visual signals for damage to the tank.

The Merkava 5 also has a host of new sensors that enable it to independently acquire targets and strike them quickly,  electronic war capabilities and a direct energy system capable of intercepting drones and cruise missiles.

Exact details of these state-of-the-art features are highly classified.

While the Israeli army relies heavily on the Merkava tank, it boasts more variety in the armoured infantry fighting vehicles that it has in its arsenal.

Of its roughly 1,360 available, the country has around 500 US-Israeli M113s, around 215 IDF Achzarits and around 120 Namer.

The US-built M113 APC was first introduced in the early 1960s and has since become one of the most widely used armoured vehicles globally. Its tracks enable it to traverse rough terrain and provide better traction than wheeled vehicles – it also has amphibious capabilities and can swim at a slow speed in water, using its tracks for propulsion.

The M113’s armor is designed to protect its occupants from small arms fire and shell splinters. but like most other APCs it is not considered to be heavily armoured like main battle tanks.

Various upgrades and modifications have been made over the years to enhance the vehicle’s protection.

Meanwhile, the IDF’s own Azcharit APC is derived from the chassis of decommissioned Soviet T-54/T-55 tanks, but can still carry up to eight infantrymen, plus three crew members, making it well-suited for urban combat scenarios.

The Namer APC is based around the chassis of the Merkava tank, meaning it and the Azcharit are more heavily armoured than the likes of the M113 APC, but are ultimately less manoeuvrable.

Should Israel launch a ground invasion into Gaza, such vehicles will likely carry IDF troops who are not part of tank squads through dangerous zones of the enclave, protecting them Hamas attacks from the surrounding buildings.

However, they are not indestructible.

In 2014, an M113 was involved in an infamous attack against Israeli forces in what became known as the Battle of Shuja’iyya.

The conflict occurred during the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, with Shuja’iyya being a neighbourhood in the Gaza strip. With 92,000 people in a 2.3 square mile area, it is one of the most densely populated communities in the enclave.

On July 20, Hamas fighters sprung an attack on the M113 which had stalled while driving through one of the neighbourhood’s narrow streets, launching an RPG anti-tank rocket at the vehicle.

The rocket struck the vehicle and caused it to explode, killing all seven soldiers inside.

Israel appears to be moving towards increasing its numbers of Namers, a heavy armoured personnel carrier based on the Merkava tank chassis.

By 2027, it is planned that 531 (up from the current 120) will be in service.

The IDF also has a variety of utility vehicles in its service, such as the Wolf, the AIL Storm and the HMMWV, as well a various trucks and engineering vehicles that it uses to demolish buildings, clear blockades and deploy temporary bridges.

AIR FORCE, MISSILE DEFENCE SYSTEMS AND ARTILLERY

Israel’s ground forces have been called into action relatively sparingly by its government in recent years considering how often it is in conflict.

The same cannot be said for the IDF’s artillery, air force or its state-of-the-art air defence systems, which have been called upon countless times to deal punishing strikes in Gaza while defending Israeli cities from rocket attacks.

The backbone of the Israeli Air Force includes US-made F-15 and F-16 fighter jets – aircraft are characterised by their agility, speed, and versatility, enabling the IAF to execute a wide range of missions, from air-to-air combat to precision airstrikes.

The F-15, introduced in the 1970s, is a twin-engine, air superiority fighter designed for aerial combat, boasting a powerful radar system, long-range missiles, and a high thrust-to-weight ratio. With variants like the F-15E Strike Eagle, it also excels in ground-attack missions.

The F-16, a single-engine multirole fighter introduced in the same era, offers versatility across air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. Its design emphasises agility, making it highly maneuverable in dogfights, while its modularity allows for various mission configurations.

Both aircraft feature advanced avionics, radar systems, and electronic warfare capabilities, ensuring dominance in modern air warfare.

Meanwhile, the F-35 Lightning II, a fifth-generation stealth fighter, is a highly capable aircraft that can conduct operations similar to the F-15 and F-16 fighters, but with enhanced capacity for air-to-air, air-to-sea and air-to-land strikes, as well as dramatically improved Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities.

The F-35 boasts cutting-edge radar systems, electronic warfare, and sensor integration, enabling it to gather, process, and share vast amounts of information in real time – but it is also armed with a diverse range of weapons for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

Meanwhile, the Iron Dome – Israel’s famed homegrown missile defence system – has proven its value time and again, intercepting huge numbers of Hezbollah and Hamas rockets over the years.

The Iron Dome is designed to knock out short-range rockets and artillery shells, offering a critical layer of defence against threats from neighbouring regions. It does so by using a sophisticated radar to detect incoming threats, determining their trajectory and whether they pose a risk to populated areas.

If a threat is identified, the system launches interceptor missiles with precision-guided capabilities to neutralise the incoming projectiles mid-flight before they can reach the target.

The David’s Sling system addresses medium to long-range threats by intercepting missiles in the upper atmosphere. A two-stage system incorporates radar and interceptors designed for different ranges, providing a comprehensive defence against a variety of aerial threats.

Finally, the Arrow missile defence system, jointly developed by Israel and the US, provides limited protection against long-range ballistic missiles at even higher altitudes.

Israel also utilises a variety of drones and UAVs, the most prominent of which is the Heron TP, a large, long-endurance UAV produced by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

The Heron TP is capable of carrying various payloads, including electro-optical and infrared sensors, radar, and communication equipment. It is known for its extended flight duration and high-altitude capabilities, making it suitable for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

In terms of artillery and rocket systems, Israel’s M109 Paladin self-propelled howitzer is a notable asset, offering mobility and firepower with a 155mm gun capable of precision-guided munitions. The Soltam M-71 is another Israeli-made howitzer known for its reliability and adaptability.

US BACKUP

The US military has provided heavy support to Israel, and currently delivers $3.8 billion in military aid to Tel Aviv every year under a 10-year agreement running until 2028.

Following the October 7 attacks, Washington delivered increased munitions to Israel and deployed two aircraft carriers to the eastern Mediterranean – the USS Gerald Ford, the world’s largest warship, and the USS Eisenhower – to deter not just Hamas but also its allies Iran and the Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah.

US Def. Sec.Lloyd Austin said Sunday that he had activated deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and additional Patriot battalions ‘throughout the region’ to support Israel’s anti-air capabilities.

And the US military last week ordered 2,000 personnel to prepare for deployment to the Middle East as a show of force, and maintains a vast network of bases across the wider Middle East.

However, because Israel’s punishing airstrike campaign on the Gaza Strip has inflamed anger among Muslims in the wider region, the US will likely be asked not to fly any potential air missions out of those nations.

That would force the Pentagon to rely on carrier-based launches to provide any support to Israel it may need.

HAMAS

Hamas, the rulers of the Gaza Strip since 2007, do not have the billions of dollars in aid and advanced weaponry of the Israeli military.

But the surprise October 7 attack included gunmen on paragliders and grenade-dropping drones, and Hamas can leverage guerrilla warfare tactics that could make any ground assault dangerous for Israeli troops.

Hamas has 15,000 to 20,000 fighters, the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimates.

Israel puts the number higher, at up to 30,000 fighters, while some estimates have suggested as many as 40,000 fighters are ready in Gaza.

Hamas’ militia is well armed, with troop armouries stocked with a range of assault rifles, heavy machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank weapons, as well as longer-range sniper rifles.

They have heavy weapons obtained from across the Middle East – particularly Iran, Syria and Libya – and has also sourced handguns and assault rifles from China and other regions.

It also has a variety of locally made, improvised explosives and Western sources say enough drones, mines, anti-tank guided missiles, grenade launchers and mortar shells to hold out for a long period, though precise figures are unavailable.

In the past, Hamas has also employed boobytraps and suicide bombers.

Palestinian authorities say more than 3,000 civilians have already been killed in Israeli air strikes launched since Hamas’s October 7 attack.

Any ground offensive is likely to only cause more suffering among Gaza’s populace, as Hamas hides among the people, using them as human shields.

SMALL ARMS

It’s difficult to attain specific details on the types and quantities of weapons used by Hamas due to the guerrilla and clandestine nature of their operations.

However, like with most guerrilla militant groups around the world, the AK-47 assault rifle is the tried and tested staple of their foot soldiers.

The AK-47, or Kalashnikov, is a legendary assault rifle developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the Soviet Union and has since been produced worldwide.

One of the key strengths of the AK-47 is its exceptional reliability. It can function effectively in harsh conditions, including mud, sand, and extreme temperatures.

The rifle is capable of both semi-automatic and fully automatic fire, and numerous variants and adaptations of the AK-47 exist, including the more modern AK-74 chambered for 5.45x39mm ammunition.

Hamas also has access to a number of M16 and M4 assault rifles that were captured from Israeli forces.

Those rifles have largely been replaced as the standard issue in the IDF, but are still reliable and easy to maintain, rendering them an ideal variant for Hamas alongside the AK-47.

Light machine guns, such as the PKM or M249, are also used by Hamas for providing sustained firepower. These weapons are effective in suppressing enemy positions.

And RPGs, like the RPG-7, constitute a key part of Hamas anti-armour capabilities.

These portable launchers are capable of firing various types of warheads, making them versatile against both vehicles and fortified positions. They are particularly valuable for Hamas when engaging Israeli armoured convoys, from APCs up to the Merkava tank.

Various types of handguns, such as the Glock or Makarov, may be used by Hamas members for personal defence or close-quarters combat.

MISSILES, ROCKETS AND AIR DEFENCE SYSTEMS

Though Israel has a vast missile defence network, Hamas has created an equally vast supply of missiles – some locally manufactured and others donated by backers such as Iran – with the aim of firing multiple salvos to break through.

The Israeli military says over 5,000 missiles have been fired toward the country since the war began. Israeli intelligence in 2021 estimated Hamas and Islamic Jihad, another militant group operating in Gaza, had some 30,000 missiles in their arsenal.

Though Israel’s vaunted Iron Dome system has proven itself a remarkable defence, it has at times been overwhelmed when Hamas launches several coordinated salvos of rockets.

The Qassam rocket is a basic, short-range rocket commonly used by Hamas. It comes in different variants, all of which are effective over ranges of 5-10 miles.

While these rockets lack advanced guidance systems, they are relatively easy to produce and have been used in numerous attacks against Israeli towns and cities.

Meanwhile, the Fateh-110 rocket, produced by Iran, is a more advanced, medium-range missile capable of reaching targets more than 100 miles away. This missile is guided and has the capacity to carry a larger warhead, increasing its destructive capability.

Hamas also has other domestically produced versions of mid-range rockets, including the Ayyash-250 and R-160, which were developed with foreign assistance, though it is unknown how many of these rockets the group has managed to manufacture.

Analysts say there are no signs yet that Hamas has developed a reasonable quantity of precision guided missiles, meaning that any missiles capable of delivering precision strikes are likely to have been supplied by Iran or Syria.

In terms of air defence, Hamas has no formal system, and instead relies on portable missile launchers and anti-aircraft weapons – this is why Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza are so effective, as Hamas has very limited means of threatening the Israeli Air Force.

MILITARY VEHICLES

Hamas does not possess any kind of conventional military vehicles – at least not in any significant number.

The group does not have access to any large number of specially-designed military vehicles like APCs or IFVs beyond those it has successfully captured from Israel amid surprise attacks.

Hamas operates more as a paramilitary organisation, and its military capabilities are characterised by guerrilla tactics and asymmetric warfare.

Instead, the group utilises reinforced SUVs, pickup trucks and lorries retrofitted with machine guns, as well as other engineering vehicles like bulldozers.

Tori Spelling is working to give her five children some much-needed stability after a recent evacuation from their rental home and split from her husband, Dean McDermott.

A source tells ET that Spelling, 50, is “trying to find her footing and doing her best to take care of her kids” during this difficult time. It’s been a rough couple of months for the Scary Movie 2 actress amid a public split from McDermott, 56, a hospital stint, an evacuation from their home due to mold issues and a recent police-involved situation in her rental neighborhood.

“She’s not used to moving around for months and months on end. Being forced out of her rental was scary for her and her children,” the source told ET of their most recent struggle.

In mid-October, Spelling and her children – Liam, 16, Stella, 15, Hattie, 12, Finn, 11 and Beau, 6 – were forcefully evacuated from their rental home in Los Angeles when a SWAT team was called in to deal with an armed gunman in a nearby home. At the time, ET shared photographs of Spelling outside of the rental home during the SWAT standoff.

The ordeal has been a lot for the daughter of legendary Hollywood producer Aaron Spelling and her family. At one point, Spelling and her five kids were living in a $100,000 RV.

“Her kids are at an age where they can kind of understand what’s going on,” the source continued. “Their friends from school do too and ask them about their current situation.”

The source continued, stating the ongoing home struggles have been exacerbated by the split between Spelling and McDermott, who tied the knot in 2006. “It’s been difficult for Tori to explain what’s going on with their dad and the lack of general stability to her kids,” the source said.

In June, McDermott took to Instagram to share that after 17 years of marriage and 18 years together, they were separating officially but would continue to co-parent amicably.

“It’s with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own,” the actor’s statement read. “We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time. We ask that you all respect our privacy as we take this time to surround our family with love and work our way through this.”

The Canadian native quickly deleted the post after it initially went up but it did not appear to change much between the couple.

Just last week ET reported that McDermott was seen holding hands with Lily Calo, a 32-year-old senior account executive at Conscious Community Global in Los Angeles.

“Dean has been dating Lily, but it’s not super serious yet,” a source said at the time.

It’s unclear how the pair met or when they became a couple.

Steven Weisberg, a film editor whose career through the ’90s onward led him to collaborations with directors like Alfonso Cuarón, Barry Sonnenfeld and Barry Levinson, died Oct. 16 at the Motion Picture & Television Fund hospital in Woodland Hills, Calif. after several years of care for early onset Alzheimer’s. He was 68.

Weisberg’s death was confirmed by his ex-wife, Susan Ellicott.

Two of Cuarón’s early films, “Great Expectations” and “A Little Princess,” were edited by Weisberg. The two reunited for a foray into franchise filmmaking, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”

Weisberg also had a knack for editing studio comedies, with his first major feature credit being Ben Stiller’s directorial debut, the 1996 thriller “The Cable Guy.” Other notable credits include a string of Barry Sonnenfeld projects — the short-lived 2001 live-action series “The Tick” and his features “Big Trouble” and “Men in Black II” — as well as “Permanent Midnight,” Neil LaBute’s “Nurse Betty,” Susan Stroman’s “The Producers,” Barry Levinson’s “Man of the Year,” Roger Michell’s “Morning Glory” and Rodrigo Garcia’s “Albert Nobbs.” Weisberg’s final credit came in 2012 with the Meryl Streep-Tommy Lee Jones two-hander “Hope Springs.”

Weisberg was born on Jan. 16, 1955 in New York City and received degrees from Syracuse University and Binghamton University. He began working as an editor in the 1980s, with his first credit coming in 1987 as an associate editor on “Gaby: A True Story.” He worked under his banner Lush Meadow Productions beginning in 2008.

Weisberg is survived by his sons, Nathaniel and Joseph.

Hollywood heavyweights including Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger, MRC studio co-CEO Modi Wiczyk, actor Chris Pine and conservative journalist Bari Weiss met at hedge fund billionaire Dan Loeb’s home last week to discuss antisemitism amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, TheWrap has learned.

The group listened to a discussion between Tablet magazine founder Alana Newhouse and Free Press founder Bari Weiss, moderated by producer Matti Leshem, according to multiple individuals in attendance.

The subject was antisemitism and the shared concern over anti-Jewish and anti-Israel sentiments rising on college campuses and beyond. According to one attendee, the discussion was “substantive.”

The event was scheduled ahead of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, but took on greater importance in the wake of the brutal massacre of 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians.

Others who attended included “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson and playwright David Mamet, an outspoken conservative. The news was first reported in the Wall Street Journal.

The gathering was held at the Bel Air residence of Loeb, whose investment portfolio has woven in and out of the entertainment industry. Loeb is a major shareholder in Disney.

News of the event comes as entertainment industry leaders continue to speak out regarding the violent attacks by terrorist group Hamas, as well as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Concerns about antisemitic incidents around the globe continue to concern some power players in Hollywood.

Wiczyk’s MRC was among the first Hollywood companies to condemn the Oct. 7 attack.

Inside the 17th annual Go Campaign gala on Saturday night, Robert Pattinson calmly raised his number to place a bid on a getaway to the luxurious Rosewood Miramar Beach hotel in Montecito.

The fast-paced auction was quickly escalating and Pattinson — seated next to his girlfriend, “Daisy Jones & the Six” star Suki Waterhouse in the center of the swanky ballroom at Citizen News in Hollywood — raised the stakes to $6,500. “Going once. Going twice. We’re sold right here,” the auctioneer said pointing to Pattison. Seemed nobody wanted to get in a bidding war with Batman.

Pattinson is a longtime ambassador for Go Campaign, a nonprofit that supports children in need across the world, partnering with grassroots organizations to make an impact at the local level; since 2006, Go has helped more than 195,000 children by funding 580 projects in 40 countries. “The Batman” and “Mickey 17” star has been involved since 2015, joining a group of celebrity ambassadors that also includes Ewan McGregor, Lily Collins and newly announced representative Evangeline Lilly. On Saturday, Pattinson donated $12,000 to the cause.

And he wasn’t the only superhero to get in on the live auction. “Black Panther” star and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o also raised her paddle for a couple prizes, as multiple tropical getaways were offered up, and ultimately gave $9,000 to fund the organization’s efforts.

“This is always the most impactful night of the year for us. I just think about all the kids we’re going to be able to help because of what happens in this room tonight,” Scott Fifer, the CEO of Go, told Variety on the black carpet before bidding began. “Every time we can change a child’s life, it becomes a success story because the ripple effects of that. You change one child and then they go on to help so many more.”

Fifer detailed the Go Campaign’s recent endeavors including building a new dormitory for girls in Rwanda and working with local Los Angeles youth in neighborhoods like Compton and Watts. “Our scope is so vast but it’s all about grassroots level, helping on the ground with no red tape, where the effect is immediate and so impactful,” he added.

Pattinson and Waterhouse arrived on the black carpet, giggling as they posed for photographers, who were eager to capture the perfect shot of the glamorous couple in a relatively rare public appearance. Pattison was also photographed inside the gala with Nyong’o, who attended with her mother Dorothy Ogada Buyu. Among the starry guest list were Emmy-nominee Robin Wright, “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green and “Mission: Impossible” star Greg Tarzan Davis, who dined on courses curated chef Evan Funke.

During the ceremony, Fifer also acknowledged the growing crisis in Israel and its impact on the children of the area.

“One week ago today, a six-year-old boy was murdered in Chicago, less than ten miles away from where our local hero is building up her youth center safe zone. That boy was from a Palestinian family living here in America,” Fifer began.

“Just think about that. A terrorist group commits unspeakable acts on one Saturday in Israel. And then 6000 miles away, just seven days later, an innocent six-year-old boy — who probably didn’t even know there was a war going on — is stabbed and killed in Chicago.”

Fifer added that he “debated whether even to mention this incident, because really I want tonight to be about hope, I want it to be about inspiration. But my point in bringing it up is that nothing happens in a bubble. There’s very little that is truly local anymore. Everything is global, we’re all connected.”

Following Fifer’s powerful remarks and the auction, Pattinson took the podium to conclude the night, thanking attendees for their generosity.

“As you may be aware, some of Go Campaign’s projects gave opportunities to the children facing homelessness, and Go has funding arts programming, vocational training and student housing, so we thought a fitting way to end the night is with the Freedom Singers,” Pattinson said, introducing the event’s musical guests.

“They all met on Skid Row here in downtown LA,” he explained. “The group is made up of nonprofit workers, Skid Row volunteers and the formerly homeless. These talented musicians shine a light on the struggles experiences by those facing homelessness, and they do it in a beautiful way.”

The Freedom Singers performed their renditions of “Under the Bridge” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Another Day in Paradise” by Phil Collins, rousing the audience to stand up in recognition of their talent as the event came to a close.

But the Go Campaign’s fundraising efforts aren’t finished yet. The online silent auction has been extended until Oct. 25, with items including McGregor’s personal signed “Star Wars” memorabilia, tickets to Formula One in Las Vegas and a lifetime ticket to the Go Gala — where the winner would likely come face-to-face with Pattinson — still available for bids.

Just weeks after the Writers Guild of America displayed solidarity by ending a monthslong strike and voting overwhelmingly in favor of a new contract with the major entertainment companies, the union is being roiled by a fight over its lack of a public statement condemning the Hamas attack on Israel.

On Oct. 15, eight days after the attack, a group of screenwriters signed an open letter to the Writers Guild asking why it had not issued a statement condemning the attack. They noted that other major Hollywood unions had issued such statements. The letter now has more than 300 signers, including Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Sherman-Palladino (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Gideon Raff (“Homeland”).

It questioned why the Writers Guild had previously made public remarks in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and #MeToo reckoning but remained silent “when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape and kidnap Jews.”

On Friday, 75 members of the guild took part in a Zoom meeting to discuss what to do about the silence. Options included withholding dues until the guild leadership convenes a proper conversation on the issue with its membership, according to a person who attended the discussion and spoke on the condition of anonymity because of its delicate nature. Other members are considering resigning from the guild by filing for financial core status, in which they would pay reduced dues and still receive the contractual benefits of the collective bargaining agreement.

Later Friday, Meredith Stiehm, the president of the Writers Guild of America West, sent an email to members who had inquired about the lack of a response. “Like the membership itself, the board’s viewpoints are varied, and we found consensus out of reach,” she wrote in the letter, which was viewed by The New York Times. “For these reasons, we have decided not to comment publicly.”

Calls to the union on Monday were not returned.

Jewish leaders have encouraged Hollywood’s biggest voices to speak out in favor of Israel.

“When celebrities speak out, it sends an important message to their tens of millions of followers that this is the right side to be on,” Jonathan Greenblatt, director of the Anti-Defamation League, wrote in an opinion piece published in The Hollywood Reporter.

“In light of how distorting social media algorithms can present the world,” he added, “it’s even more important for these voices to cut through.”

The writers’ union is not the only Hollywood organization dealing with fallout.

On Sunday, Creative Artists Agency announced to its employees that Maha Dakhil, the highest-ranking female agent in the motion picture group, had resigned from the company’s internal board and was stepping away from her leadership role within the motion picture group after posting inflammatory remarks on Instagram that accused Israel of committing genocide.

Ms. Dakhil has apologized for her comments. According to an email sent by the agency’s chief executive, Bryan Lourd, which was reviewed by The Times, she will continue to represent her clients, who include Natalie Portman, Tom Cruise and Reese Witherspoon.

Loki production designer and director Kasra Farahani just commented on Jonathan Majors’ highly-publicized arrest for the first time.

While Majors made his grand return to the role of Kang the Conqueror and his Variants in Loki Season 2, he did so while being shrouded in controversy, as he has been since earlier in 2023.

The MCU star was arrested on assault charges in March 2023 and is awaiting the final results of his trial, all while his future in the entertainment industry remains in limbo.

Loki Creative Speaks on Jonathan Majors’ Arrest

Marvel

Speaking with Variety, Kasra Farahani, who directed the latest episode of Loki, “1893,” and served as the production designer on both seasons of the series, spoke for the first time on the discomfort surrounding Jonathan Majors’ arrest after the star made his MCU return in Loki.

When asked about his reaction to the news, Farahani described it as a surprise but noted he had “such a great experience on the set” with Majors and the rest of the cast.

Praising Majors’ ingenuity along with that of stars Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson, the MCU creative confirmed that there was no drama on set and that the cast “all worked together super well:”

“It was a surprise for sure. But I don’t know anything about it, other than to say that we had, honestly, such a great experience on the set. The cast was a wonderful ensemble. They all worked together super well. Tom would have an idea, Jonathan would have ideas, Owen is an idea machine. The experience on set was without any drama, and just a joy. For me, especially as my first big directing opportunity, I count myself so fortunate to be working with such high-caliber actors that made the directing that much easier for me.”

Reports previously noted that Marvel has no intention of changing course with Majors, as his Kang the Conqueror will become the overarching big bad of the entire Multiverse Saga when everything is said and done.

Farahani also discussed Majors’ role in this series as Victor Timely, calling him a “brilliant guy who’s operating like an Einstein-type figure” while touching on the character’s awkwardness around people as well.

It was also important for the team to give him a “kind of conman quality” as a “Black man in the late 19th Century in America,” with Farahani explaining how Timely used his mind and his wit to make his way in this world:

“The idea with Victor Timely that we came up with in the writers’ room is that he’s this brilliant guy who’s operating like an Einstein-type figure, seven levels above everybody else, but as a result, he’s got an awkwardness on the most basic level. Also, we wanted him to have this kind of conman quality, which in my mind is justified by the fact that he’s a Black man in the late 19th Century in America, trying to operate in the technical industry. He’s probably had to use his wits and be clever on his feet to make it happen. And his ideas exceed the technological capability of the era, so to compensate, there’s a degree of, like, ‘Trust me, this is all real.'”

The director revealed one specific inspiration for Timely in Black inventor Granville Woods from the late 1800s, who regularly developed great inventions and would have “his patents challenged by other prominent inventors.”

This man would eventually wind up working with Thomas Edison, with the Loki team looking to get some of the stress and duress he experienced into Victor Timely’s story as well:

“On top of that, we took a lot of inspiration from a figure that I had come across and I talked to Jonathan about named Granville Woods. He was a Black inventor from the exactly the era Timely would have lived, who invented so many amazing things. He was constantly having his patents challenged by other prominent inventors. Edison tried to claim two of his patents; lost in court both times; ended up offering Woods a job. Woods turned it down. So we wanted to get some of that element in there, that this is a person who’s under duress. I mean, the very nature that he’s making this presentation in the Hofbräu of the Midway, instead of the machine room in the White City, where everybody else is presenting their big inventions, is part of, I think, this dynamic.”

What’s in Store for Jonathan Majors’ MCU Future?

Even though Jonathan Majors’ current place in the MCU is complicated, it appears his involvement is still fairly set in stone.

Following his run in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and both seasons of Loki, there are rumors a Kang Variant will be featured in Moon Knight Season 2 before he takes on the next two Avengers films.

And with Majors’ antagonist set to make a bigger mark in the MCU than even the Mad Titan Thanos, all eyes will be pinned on the actors’ legal situation to see whether he will continue with this epic role.

The first three episodes of Loki Season 2 are now streaming on Disney+.

Horror is one of the most popular genres, and is watched year-round. Creating and producing a scary story outside the US brings various perspectives, folklore, and mythology that aren’t seen most of the time in Hollywood’s horror movies. Even if created in a different country, and spoken in a different language, one feeling may be the most universal of all: fear. Here are some of the best international horror series to watch if you’re in the spooky mood.

10 Dark (2017)

Country: Germany

Netflix

Dark is a science fiction story filled with plot twists, incredible characters, and a lot of horror elements. Set in a small village in Germany, the story starts with the mysterious disappearance of two children. What none of the characters know is that this disappearance will set in motion a journey that will literally bend the past, the present and the future.

What Makes It Great

The atmosphere is dark and eerie, and it’s filled with suspense. However, the series is not pure horror, but it takes elements from the genre and adds them to its story. It is still a great show that many love around the world and is considered one of the best productions ever made by Netflix. The German series has three seasons, and it’s completed – so if you want to watch an unsettling story that will blow your mind and has a definite ending, this one is a great choice.

9 Folklore (2018)

Region: Asia

Folklore
HBO Max

Folklore is an anthology series that allows different filmmakers from different parts of Asia to showcase their own horror stories through rich and terrifying folklore. Each director gets a one-hour episode to tell their stories with different characters and settings. From a harsh story about motherhood, to a journalist interviewing a ghost, every episode is deeply unique.

What Makes It Great

The series examines the folklore and culture of various places, giving a platform for different types of horror to be explored. A common thread and highlight of the show is the explicit social criticism underneath the supernatural and scary situations.

8 Black Spot (2017)

Country: France

Suliane Brahim in the forest in Black Spot
Groupe AB

Black Spot (Zone Blanche in the original language) is a Belgian series that mixes a detective procedural in a small town, Villefranche, with folklore and the supernatural. The town’s lead detective and police officer, Laurène (Suliane Brahim), has a dark past that has everything to do with the woods that surround the town. Political games, ancient beings and murder are all a part of this dark tale.

What Makes It Great

The atmosphere and cinematography of the show really translate the cold and somber feeling of the little town of Villefranche. It’s not extremely scary, but the characters and the plot are great. It’s a great balance between the crime and the supernatural elements, as well as the personal lives of the characters. Twin Peaks fans will probably enjoy this one.

7 Katla (2021)

Country: Iceland

The Icelandic mystery-drama Katla
Netflix

Netflix has been one of the few streaming services to really explore international productions, whether by distributing them or through original productions. Katla is an Icelandic supernatural thriller that explores mythology and folklore, especially the idea of the double. In the series, a woman who has been missing for 20 years appears after a volcano eruption, and she hasn’t aged a day.

What Makes It Great

This series is for viewers not looking for gore or jump scares but rather existential dread to the fullest. The cinematography is one of the biggest highlights, as Iceland is known for its beauty, and the viewer can almost feel the cold the characters are experiencing just by watching the show.

6 The Kingdom (1994)

Country: Denmark

Cast members hiding in The Kingdom: Exodus
MUBI

If you like medical dramas and horror, then Lars Von Trier’s show The Kingdom (Riget in the original language) would be a good option. The setting says it all: a haunted hospital in Copenhagen. The series bends to the absurd and weird, just like most of Trier’s productions.

What Makes It Great

Last year The Kingdom: Exodus, a continuation of the show, was released and greatly pleased both fans and critics, earning a Fresh Certificate and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. For Ari Aster fans, the director said the show influenced him when creating his film Hereditary.

5 All of Us are Dead (2022)

All of Us Are Dead
Netflix

If there is one thing no one can deny, it is how great South Korean zombie stories are. This series was a massive hit, so much so that the Halloween event in the Universal Studios parks in Singapore this year was an All of Us Are Dead house. The series follows a group of teenagers trapped in a school as a zombie apocalypse happens caused by their biology teacher. The show was renewed for a second season.

What Makes It Great

All of Us Are Dead has everything that zombie fans want to see on the screen: gore, thrills, and much more. The series positions itself as a unique take on the subgenre by combining elements of zombie chaos with coming-of-age melodrama and young love, and mixes these disparate aspects into something altogether satisfying.

4 30 Coins (2020)

Country: Spain

30 Coins Silvestre
HBO Max

30 Coins (30 Monedas in the original language) has one of the most popular elements in horror stories: exorcisms. The Spanish series just started its second season and is available on Max. The show follows an exorcist, boxer, and ex-convict Padre Vergara (Eduard Fernández). He was exiled to a remote city in Spain and helps the town as much as he can – until supernatural things start to happen.

What Makes It Great

The acting and how the supernatural is explored are one of the common elements most viewers enjoy about the show. It needs to be highlighted that this series has a lot of violence, so viewer discretion is advised. The second season premiered on October 23.

Hellbound
Netflix

To say that South Korea is dominating television and will probably only continue to do so is an understatement. Hellbound focuses on religion and fanatics after a creature starts to appear and deliver prophecies. It condemns certain people to go to hell at a specific time in the future. The series was renewed, but a date hasn’t been announced for the return of this brutal story.

What Makes It Great

Hellbound was made by Yeon Sang-ho, who directed one of the best zombie movies, Train to Busan. It is a great horror series that received a Fresh Certificate on Rotten Tomatoes. The commentary of religion and human behavior creates a necessary story that still gives fear to its audience.

2 Kingdom (2019)

Country: South Korea

Kingdom TV Series
Netflix

Kingdom is another South Korean production, and this time the story is set in the 16th Century fictional country of Joseon. A mysterious plague takes over the land, including the king. The Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon), has to step up and try to understand the disease that turns into a deadly epidemic.

What Makes It Great

The historical costumes, acting, and the grand subject of political games mixed with zombies create a spectacular show. The series was praised for how innovative they were about how they tackled zombies. The two seasons received great scores on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest being 94%. Kingdom: Ashin of the North is a spin-off that furthers develops this fictitious world by explaining how the epidemic started.

1 Marianne (2019)

Country: France

Marianne
Netflix

Marianne is one of the most terrifying international series to watch. However, Emma is tired and decides to end her very famous book series, and that’s when things start to get scary.

What Makes It Great

The series only has one season, as it was canceled, but thankfully, the main story arcs are finished. The French series was praised by the King of Horror himself, Stephen King. The visuals are horrific on their own but combined with a compelling story that haunts you when you turn off the TV makes it all the better. The scares are innovative and deeply unsettling, just like the superb acting, especially by actress Mireille Herbstmeyer.
