ABOUT FEMALE VOICES ROCK:

Female Voices Rock is dedicated to supporting diverse female storytellers in the entertainment industry. Our mission is to incite and inspire change that builds a foundation of equality and diversity, ensuring that every voice is heard and championed.

Female Voices Rock launched a one-of-a-kind film festival in 2019, when women comprised only 20% of all

directors, writers, producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the top

250 US domestic grossing films, to spotlight women in the film industry and

champion the inclusion of underrepresented storytellers and diverse

voices.

BIPOC, LGBTQ+ voices, and other marginalized voices are not given equal space and

have been left to fight for themselves for too long. We are using our platform to create space for the important stories that need to be told, the films that have not be seen, the creators who have not been given an opportunity, and we are here to support filmmakers to the fullest of our abilities through educational programming, workshops, webinars, and networking events. By uplifting those that have been left in the background, we are committed to increasing the diversity in the industry and revolutionizing the filmmaking space.

The One-Of-A-Kind Film Festival Returns for 3

If your cuticles have seen better days, slathering on hand cream alone won’t make them any less painful—or unsightly. The best cuticle oils, on the other hand (pun intended), act as a restorative treatments. They’re often packed with vitamins (E, in particular, will nourish skin) and hydrating ingredients like fruit and nut oils (think almond, jojoba, and apricot oils) that specifically address nail concerns—whether it’s keeping the surrounding skin moisturized and hangnail-free, or strengthening brittle nails after the harsh removal of gels, dip powders, press-ons and acrylics.

“Very similar to skin care, your cuticles need a daily moisturizer,” says Amy Ling Lin, CEO and founder of nail polish and nail care brand Sundays. “Applying cuticle oil regularly to the cuticle on your hands and feet is a great way to keep them in the best condition.”

Of course, finding a cuticle oil that works for you is a lesson in trial and error, considering the vast number of options available on the market. Not all cuticle products provide the same lasting results—and we’ve experienced how some formulas only make the surrounding skin appear moisturized, but do nothing in the long-run.

That’s why we’ve combed through thousands of options to bring you the oils and cuticle creams that actually deliver—from heavy-duty formulas the pros swear by to fast-absorbing serums perfect for on-the-go care. Lin says the ingredient list will be your best friend. Avoid harsh chemicals that will do more harm than good, and look for plant-based when possible, because they’ll restore the natural moisture of your cuticles, and strengthen and nourishe your skin. “The ideal time to apply is before bed, because it’s the time when you are most still, so the oil has a chance to work its magic,” she says.

Whether you live for an Insta-worthy mani or simply want your nails to look civilized without having to visit a professional, shop 17 of the best cuticle oils below.

Our top picks:

Best Overall Cuticle Oil: CND SolarOil Nail & Cuticle Conditioner, $10
Best Roll-On Cuticle Oil: Tenoverten The Rose Oil, $26
Best Serum Cuticle Oil: Olive & June Cuticle Serum, $23
Best Splurge Cuticle Oil: Dior Huile Abricot, $30
Best Drugstore Cuticle Oil: Sally Hansen Cuticle Massage Cream, $7
Best Multiuse Cuticle Oil: Lano The Original 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm, $17

Academy Award nominated actor Willem Dafoe is set to return to the big screen as an art thief named Nemo in the psychological thriller film Inside. In the veteran actor’s long and impressive career, he’s played everything, but this is the first time the actor will be doing a one-man show as he’s trapped inside a luxurious penthouse with no one else to help him.

With so many valuable art pieces around him, they were deemed useless as Dafoe’s character couldn’t use them for survival. The actor briefly summarized the film, he told EW, “He’s getting ready to leave, and the alarm system goes wacky and closes him in. After a little while, it’s clear no one’s coming; no one’s been alerted, the owner’s not coming back. There’s very little in the house. He’s trapped there.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

He continued, “He doesn’t know what to do. He’s got to find food; he’s got to find water. There’s not much there. Nobody’s been there for a while. There’s all this priceless art on the walls, and he has to figure out a way to survive, and he doesn’t quite know how long this will go on. So that’s the basic setup.”

The actor shares how he realistically depicted his character’s physical deterioration. He admitted, “I just kind of let myself go. I did wash! But let my hair go, let my beard go, didn’t do my normal physical exercise, so I started to get a little wasted. Because working 12 hours a day, when you’re the only guy in a dark room, it takes a toll on you.”

He added, “Doing physical things, dragging things, banging things, screaming. [Laughs] It will start to show after a while if you want it to.” The already slender actor even dropped a few pounds during the shoot. “I didn’t lose too much weight,” he says, “but I’d see a couple of shots toward the end, and I’d think, ‘Oh, boy, put on a little beef!”

A Simple Trip To New York Resulted To Vasilis Katsoupis’ Directorial Feature Debut

Focus Features

The film was written by British writer-director Ben Hopkins and directed by Vasilis Katsoupis. It was based on the director’s idea that was conceptualized while he was visiting New York. Katsoupis shared, “I was looking at all these huge buildings. It came to me that what would be the situation if I get stuck in a top floor of these buildings.”

He added, “I started working to make it more of a survival film [like] Robinson Crusoe. I found it very interesting that my hero will be lonely in the middle of a metropolis. He can actually see life, the busy streets, people around him, but nobody can reach him, and nobody can help him.”

While the film exudes a terrifying premise, the filmmakers added some comical aspect to lessen the seriousness of the film. One of these moments was when the 90s hit song Macarena started playing when the door of a high-tech fridge was left open for long. Dafoe commented, “Everybody thought it was pretty funny.”

He added, “It’s goofy, but that was important too, to find the humor and not get too dour about what we were doing. Even when people are in a terrible situation, they find time to step back and try to have a good laugh about it.”

Inside will premiere in movie theaters on March 17.

Filmmakers and festival attendees will gather this

Alicia Keys. Michael B. Jordan. Tracee Ellis Ross. Regé-Jean Page. What do all these people have in common? Besides having flawless skin, they’re all clients of makeup artist and groomer Tasha Reiko Brown.

Known for her skin-forward approach to makeup, Brown has mastered the art of luminous, clean, and hydrated skin—a signature style she likes to call “satin skin.” The secret? Lots of product layering but with an unexpected twist.

“One of my biggest tricks to satin skin is reversing the order of products,” she tells Glamour. “I will lay down your moisturizer first, and then put the serum on top of it. Typically when you layer, you put on a serum and then you lock it in with moisturizer. But if you do moisturizer first, followed by serum, you will always have this layer of hydration that’s floating on top of the skin. So when I put foundation on and then you powder it strategically, you always have this glow that breaks through. All of my clients tend to have the same satin skin texture because I use the same technique on everyone.”

Another beauty hot take? Brown sends her clients down the red carpet without a spritz of setting spray. “I don’t use a setting spray,” she says. “It’s the minimalist in me, but I know the makeup will hold without me adding any extra layers on the skin. Plus, setting spray dulls the skin too much sometimes.”

Minimalism is something Brown also extends to her own skin care routine. Fresh off working with Jordan for his Creed III promotional tour and, most recently, the Oscars, Brown is constantly on the go. “I’ve gone from Mexico to Paris to London, from London to Utah for a day, and then to New York,” she says. “I won’t cut corners with my routine, but I don’t have an overly complicated routine to begin with. If I add too many things, a lot of times it can tip over into reading greasy. That’s one of the reasons why I’m a minimalist. Skin should be clean and strategically moisturized.”

Ahead, Tasha Reiko Brown shares her favorite skin care products for Glamour‘s Drop the Routine.

My cleanser

I use the La Mousse Cleanser by Chanel. I love a cleanser. I travel a lot, so I can’t travel with something that’s too liquidy. This is a cream cleanser, so I can put it on and let it sit for a while to dissolve the makeup. Then I massage, massage, massage, before I wash it off. I love the creaminess of it and the ability to let it dissolve.

Chanel La Mousse Anti-Pollution Cleansing Cream-to-Foam

My toner

I go really natural and just use rose water. It smells great, and it’s been proven to work. It’s a staple that’s been around for so long. It’s historically proven to be fantastic.

Simplified Skin Rose Water Spray for Face & Hair

My serum

Serums are key to my look because I float it over the moisturizer. I like the Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Serum. If you told me I can only use two products to prep my face for the rest of my life, it would be the Hydra Beauty Serum and the Chanel Le Baume. Those two together give me satin skin every single time. I use the products to target things. Every product doesn’t need to hit every concern. So I like a serum that’s moisturizing and tightening with a beautiful glow.

Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Serum

My moisturizer

The Chanel Sublimage Le Baume because I use straight Retin-A from the dermatologist, which is a little bit drying. A lot of times I’m using it probably a tad more than I should because sometimes my days get mixed up and my schedule’s hectic. I can’t quite pin down when it’s the last time I used it, so I’ll use it rather than not use it. When your skin is dry like that, I always tell clients to turn the moisturizer bottle upside down. If it begins to seep while upside, it’s probably too thin for somebody who is really, really dry. I love this moisturizer because it’s a balm that stays where you put it, so I can really press it into the skin. It doubles as eye cream too.

Chanel Sublimage Le Baume

My face mask

I like the Jillian Dempsey eye masks. The tray is very convenient because they’re multiple use. So sometimes I’ll use it and stick it back in the tray; it’s so emollient that, especially if I’m doing something in the morning and then in the evening, I’ll pick it right back up and I’ll sit it on my eyes for my evening routine as well.

In 2001, when I was producing and directing American Masters—Quincy Jones: In the Pocket, Quincy was writing his autobiography. He told me it was the toughest thing he had ever done.

Filmmaker Michael Kantor and Quincy Jones.

This came from a guy who produced a film with Steven Spielberg, the best-selling album of all time with Michael Jackson, an anthem called “We Are the World” that raised more than 63 million dollars for humanitarian aid, a Presidential Inauguration and a Hip Hop Summit, along with so many other landmark events.

In an interview, Oprah Winfrey said, “I think that Quincy on a bad day does more than most people do in a lifetime.”

So 22 years after making the film, as Quincy celebrates his 90th birthday, it seems like a good time to try to remember what I learned from him.

Part of what makes Quincy a “man among men” is his ability to walk with kings, but not lose the common touch.

Quincy is equally at home with royalty as he was on the south side of Chicago, where he grew up during the Great Depression. It was also in Chicago where Quincy lost his mother:

They took my mother away to a mental institution when we were very young kids. . . The kids used to tell us, ‘you’d better be careful ‘cause when your momma gets out, she’s gonna kill you.’  One time we saw when she was out, she yelled out to us, probably trying to see us. We screamed and just ran on down the street.

When I once asked Quincy, “What is music to you?” he said plainly, “My mother.”

At the age of 10, his father (a carpenter—to this day Quincy still keeps his old saw next to his piano) moved the family to Seattle.

We only had radio then . . . it stimulated our imagination, because we could imagine everything, that the Shadow and the Green Hornet and all those people were Black. . . When the big bands came through Seattle and I was 12 and 13, I saw this body of unified Black men playing in 16-piece bands, playing with this worldliness and dignity and pride and form. I turned from a thug to a musician.

Quincy Jones biography, the story of an American musician

The moment of truth came after a night in which Quincy and his friends robbed some grocery stores and broke into an Armory, discovering a canteen stocked with lemon meringue pies and ice cream. After they ate all the ice cream and had a massive food fight, they broke into another room, which had an upright piano in the corner.

I touched that piano, and my life was different ever since. It was over. I knew then inside something happened electrically… That was what I wanted to do all my life.

Quincy learned trumpet, ran away with a band and recorded his first song at the age of 18. He was accepted to music school, dropped out, went to Paris in the early 60s and studied with the greatest music mentor of the 20th century, Nadia Boulanger—teacher of Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. He learned to arrange music.

Of course, it makes sense to me that at the age of 22, Quincy would be recruited by Dizzy Gillespie to lead a band on a U.S. State Department “Jazz Ambassador” tour to the Middle East, where Quincy and his friends wrote arrangements for the national anthems of every country they visited, starting with Iran. Then Quincy conducts Count Basie’s Orchestra for Frank Sinatra (“Fly Me to the Moon”), becomes the first Black executive at a record company (Mercury), breaks into scoring Hollywood movies thanks to Henry Mancini and Sidney Lumet (who hired him for his first score on “The Pawnbroker,” produced by my late father-in-law, Ely Landau), earns 80 Grammy nominations and wins 28 of them, and brings out the best in people like Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith and musical genius Jacob Collier (whom he discovered on YouTube). His lesson to aspiring young talents is “be ready for the call,” but what stays with me is what the late great singer James Ingram said when I asked him for Quincy’s secret. He told me, “You gotta stay hungry.”

No matter the success, Quincy’s common touch remains, maybe born out of his difficult childhood and his search for love and belonging.

Early in his career, Frank Sinatra gave him a nickname, “Q,” and Quincy often invents his own affectionate nicknames for his colleagues. He called his buddy Ray Charles “Six-Nine”; songwriter Rod Temperton was called “Worms.”

When we created Quincy Jones: In the Pocket, he started calling me “Work Junkie.” From a man who does more on a bad day than most do in a lifetime, I took my nickname as a supreme compliment. When his autobiography came out, Quincy inscribed a copy to me with the following message:

I feel blessed to have you in my life & in my heart. Thank you for your profound & consummate “Junkie” professionalism- (it takes a junkie to know one!). Seriously Mike, I loved every minute in it with you & the frosting on the cake is our cherished friendship. I love you. Quincy ♡

Happy 90th Birthday, Quincy—I love you too, and hope your next 90 years are equally fulfilling.

Core Four forever! The love for Scream is bigger than ever. In its opening weekend, Scream 6 broke the franchise record by making $67 million at the box office. Scream 6 was the second film featuring a new generation of stars, including Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown.

The hype over Scream is letting up, so what does this mean for Scream 7? It has to be a sure thing, right? HollywoodLife is breaking down everything we know about Scream 7.

Is There Going To Be A Seventh Scream Movie?

Scream 7 hasn’t been confirmed by Paramount yet. But with the numbers that Scream 6 is raking in, you can be assured that a seventh Scream movie is almost definitely in the cards.

ScreenRant is reporting that Scream 7 has been “greenlit” and is being “prepped to shoot this year. It looks like the studio hopes to have this film shot and released as quickly as its predecessor.”

The fifth Scream movie was released in January 2022. After it became a box office success, Scream 6 quickly got the greenlight. The sixth Scream movie filmed quickly took place from June to August 2022. Given the ongoing popularity of Scream, it’s likely that Scream 7 will follow this pattern.

Scream 7 Release Date

Since Scream 7 hasn’t been officially confirmed, there’s no release date yet for a seventh Scream movie. If the film gets underway by the end of 2023, Scream 7 could easily be released in mid-2024. Fun fact: a Scream film has never been released in the summer. Let’s change that!

Scream 7 Cast

Scream 7 would undoubtedly feature the return of Scream’s “Core Four,” which includes Jenna Ortega as Tara, Melissa Barrera as Sam, Mason Gooding as Chad, and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy. They all managed to survive their latest round with Ghostface.

Scream 6

Hayden Panettiere’s long-awaited return as Kirby Reed paved the way for more of the beloved character in the future. She was stabbed again by Ghostface, but she survived. She told Tara and Sam to call her if they “ever” needed anything.

Kirby was the perfect bridge between the original legacy characters and the newbies. She also formed a sweet bond with Tara. Bring Kirby back, Scream 7!

Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers also survived another brutal attack by Ghostface. Courteney is the only original Scream character to have appeared in all 6 films so far. She would likely make an appearance in a seventh installment.

Josh Segarra was introduced in Scream 6 as Danny Brackett, Sam’s new love interest. If Sam and Danny stay together, Josh would probably be back in Scream 7.

As with all previous Scream films, a new batch of supporting characters would be introduced in Scream 7. One or a few of them could be the new Ghostface!

Will Neve Campbell Return For Scream 7?

The Scream world was shocked in June 2022 when Neve Campbell revealed that she would not be returning as Sidney Prescott in Scream 6.

“Sadly, I won’t be making the next Scream film,” Neve said in a statement. “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

Neve’s absence was felt in Scream 6. She was mentioned briefly after the latest set of Ghostface attacks. Gale revealed that Sidney wouldn’t be coming to New York. Sidney and Mark took their kids to a safe spot to hide out from Ghostface.

Neva Campbell

Sidney Prescott will always remain a core part of the Scream world, but Neve’s decision to not come back didn’t completely change the story of Scream 6. “This was always the story we wanted to tell, which is really exciting we were able to do it,” writer James Vanderbilt told Variety. “The Sam and Tara sister story was always the thing we wanted to be front and center in this. We love Neve and think she’s amazing and had a great experience with her on [Scream] 5. She needs to do what she needs to do as a business woman and we totally support that.”

Director Tyler Gillett added, “I think what ultimately happened was we knew that if anything, in the absence of that character, we had to really dig deeper into the core four and make those relationships matter in a really emotional way. The goal was to try to form a connection between those characters and the audience the way that we formed a connection with Gale, Dewey, and Sid. At the end of the day, that’s just about having the time and the real estate in your story to really dig deep. But no, it wasn’t a wildly dramatic pivot.”

Neve hasn’t ruled out bringing Sidney back into the fold. “I don’t know that I’m done for good,” the actress tells PEOPLE in August 2022. “It would really depend on what they came to me with next. It would have to be different. It would have to be a different attitude, and I’m not sure that’s going to happen.”

The actress continued, “If they came to me with a number that felt right, that felt respectful, that felt in keeping with my value that I brought to the franchise, I’d be willing to consider [returning in the future].”I don’t believe it’s dead in the water, but we’ll see. But honestly, I’m really okay. I’ve been able to let it go. I wish them well. I’m doing three different shows right now. I’m very, very grateful that I’m working. I’m happy. So all is good.”

Is Stu Macher Alive?

That’s the million-dollar question. OG killer Stu was seemingly killed in the first Scream movie after being stabbed and electrocuted when a television falls on his head. However, a legion of Scream fans are holding out hope that Stu somehow survived and has been living in hiding for all this time.

Scream 5 featured Stu’s nephew briefly, but he was killed quickly by Ghostface. The big showdown went down at Stu Macher’s old house just like in the original.

Scream 6 directly referenced Stu Macher. At the Ghostface shrine warehouse, the Core Four and others came face-to-face with key items from past killings, including the TV that supposedly killed Stu. When Kirby brings up the TV that killed Stu, Mindy quipped, “If you believe he’s dead.”

Matthew Lillard
Matthew Lillard and Rose McGowan in ‘Scream.’ (Everett Collection)

Scream’s original screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, has said that Stu is dead dead. “No, he’s dead. I think that started because of the college scene, the frat party scene because he’s standing in the background. He just came to visit set that night,” he told Collider.

The latest Scream team isn’t so concrete about Stu’s fate. “There’s no good answer, so I will never confirm or deny stuff like that,” James Vanderbilt told Variety. Producer William Sherak added, “Anything’s possible.” Producer Paul Neinstein also said, “Characters can come in and out! There’s different ways to do it. It’s such a part of all of their lives; they have an affinity for Scream.”

Even if Stu is dead, he could come back as Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis, who has appeared in the latest two films in Sam’s head. If Stu somehow is still alive, that would be the ultimate twist. Scream 7 could follow the theme of Scream 3: the past can always comes back to bite you.

“Today we are officially from here on out the Garcia Twins, Brie and Nikki Garcia,” Nikki said Tuesday in the new episode of their SiriusXM show, which is now called “The Nikki & Brie Show.” The twin sisters signed with WWE in 2007 and made their debut that year as The Bella Twins.

WWE currently owns the trademark on “Bella Twins,” according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The Bella Twins’ YouTube channel, which at one point had more than 3.5 million subscribers, is no longer available on the video platform. A WWE rep declined to comment on the sisters’ departure.

In the episode of “The Nikki & Brie Show” that aired Tuesday, Nikki acknowledged that dropping the Bella Twins identities was a difficult decision but that the sisters felt it was time to move on to focus on a “new chapter” as moms, entrepreneurs, podcast hosts and executive producers. She also noted that they will be turning 40 later this year (their birthday is Nov. 21). When their WWE contract came up for renewal, according to Nikki, the two of them “just knew it was time to head into this next chapter,” per People, which first reported the news.

Last week, Amazon Studios announced “Twin Love,” a new dating competition series hosted by Brie and Nikki. The show, from ITV Entertainment, is set to premiere on Prime Video this summer and simultaneously on Amazon Freevee in the U.S. and UK. According to the show’s official description, “‘Twin Love’ is a social dating experiment that explores the love lives of identical twins. Ten sets of twins will be split up and placed into two houses of ‘identical’ casts, where they’ll begin a unique and compelling search for love.”

The Bella Twins’ wrestling career “started out with a bit of deception, as the two identical twins would switch places during Brie’s matches to ensure they picked up the victory,” their official WWE bio reads. “But even after their ruse was discovered, the sisters proved themselves to be tough competitors.”

Brie was the first to capture a WWE title, winning the Divas Championship in April 2011. Nikki followed up with a championship win of her own, then added a second reign that saw her become the longest-reigning Divas Champion in WWE history.

In other TV credits, Nikki appeared on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” Season 25 in 2017. The two starred in reality show appeared on E!’s “Total Divas,” then were featured in their own spinoff on the network, “Total Bellas,” which aired from 2016-21.

Both Nikki and Brie Garcia are repped by WME. SiriusXM’s Stitcher in 2021 inked a deal for what was then “The Bellas Podcast,” hosted by the WWE Hall of Fame inductees. Brie and Nikki Garcia produce the show with support from Stitcher.

Separately, Vince McMahon returned to the WWE earlier this year — after leaving the company last year amid sexual misconduct allegations — and has been actively seeking a buyer.

Today, YouTube TV is launching early access testing for multiview, a feature that will allow subscribers to watch up to four different programs at the same time. “Those who are part of early access will receive an email and see an alert about this feature in their YouTube TV experience,” YouTube wrote in a blog post. There’s no way to manually opt in at the moment. “We’ll gradually roll out availability to all members over the coming months,” the company said.

But don’t get too excited. While multiview will heavily factor into YouTube’s plans for NFL Sunday Ticket coverage, right now, it’s very limited. Like, strictly limited to sports. YouTube says early access customers will be able to “watch up to four, pre-selected different streams at once.” Spokesperson Jessica Gibby clarified that “for the initial launch, it’s only the channels that have NCAA tournament games on them. Going forward, multiview will be available on sports content.”

But if you want to watch CNN (or something like an awards show) alongside that sports content, it seems like that’s not going to be in the cards for a while. In fact, you can’t even customize the multiview experience right now. “Over time, we’ll refine and add more functionality to multiview, including the option to customize your own multiview streams,” said German Cheung, engineering lead for the YouTube TV core experience team, in today’s blog post.

For now, you’ll be picking from batches of games that YouTube curates itself. You can get a sense of how that works from the below GIF. Instead of letting you manually add channels, YouTube TV presents recommended multiview sets.

YouTube TV will provide preselected multiview sessions.
GIF: Google

YouTube has prioritized compatibility above everything else. It’s not relying on your streaming device — be it an Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, or TV — to power multiview and juggle multiple streams at once. Rather, it’s all handled server-side. To your device, it looks like a normal single live feed. YouTube says it’s repurposing some of the tech originally built to help creators go live to pull off this approach to multiview.

I’m not sure why, but we’ve arrived at a place where YouTube’s brand-new implementation is somehow worse than what Sony offered five years ago. With Vue, you could include any of the service’s available channels in multiview. Maybe this goes to show how complex the negotiations between streaming services and networks have become; streaming TV services were still a novel thing in the Vue era, which likely benefitted Sony. It’s also possible that YouTube’s customer data has driven the sports-focused multiview experience, and the company thinks it’ll be fine leaving out regular programming.

YouTube plans to monitor feedback from multiview users as more people gain access over the next few months and as the all-important NFL season approaches. The goal is for all subscribers to have multiview by the time the regular season kicks off.

I’m sure that a lot of people will mainly use multiview for sports, so the sports-only limitation might not irk many. But considering how much YouTube TV costs each month, I’d at least hope the feature will gain some flexibility over time. YouTube’s Cheung says that “we’re looking to bring this multiview experience to the main YouTube app across TVs later this year.”

Exactly one month ago, on Valentine’s Day 2023, Eric André and Emily Ratajkowski hard-launched their relationship by posting nude pics to Instagram. Though the pair had been spotted hanging out previously, this was the first time their romance was confirmed. It has since ended, but André just talked about the whole whirlwind for the first time, and it seems the pair had a lot of fun while it lasted!

“I was really in the moment…drinking wine, and she started dying laughing, and she was like, ‘I have to take a picture of this,’” the comedian told Rolling Stone. “We both started cracking up. We both agreed this was a beautiful image that we had to share with the world.” Fun!

“It was one of those things,” the comedian continued. “I think that’s what art is about. Art is not intellectual; it’s primal. It has to speak to your hormones as much as it speaks to your mind.”

As for the public’s semi-surprised response to their pairing, André called out a superficial understanding of attraction. “I think that people think attraction is only based on physical appearance, but beauty is only skin-deep.” He compared himself to fellow funny guys Colin Jost (married to Scarlett Johansson) and John Mulaney (has a baby with Olivia Munn), explaining, “Comedy works.”

It’s also worth pointing out that André previously dated Rosario Dawson, and we won’ even get into Pete Davidson (also linked to EmRata). Yep, comedy works.

Sadly, three days after the pictures went up, Ratajkowski took to TikTok to ask followers what to do when “a situationship ends,” which many took to be a reference to the Eric Andre Show host.

From the way he talks about her, sounds like things were pretty amicable, no? Situationships come and situationships go, but nudes you put on grid are forever.

Exactly one month ago, on Valentine’s Day

David Letterman joins Bono and The Edge in a new streaming documentary about U2 and one obvious question soon jumps out: What exactly is David Letterman doing here?

The droll, bushy-bearded American comedian is an odd choice to be master of ceremonies for this Disney+ project, unbalancing everything, even the title, “Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman.”

Director Morgan Neville does a fabulous job using new interviews — including brilliant insights by musician Glen Hansard and producer Jimmy Iovine — and melding them with old performances as he explores the band’s origins, song creations, highs and lows. But he’s torn about whether this is a travel show or a music documentary and neither work well.

The film’s spine is a concert by Bono and The Edge at the Ambassador Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, where they unveil some of the ways they’ve stripped down and reworked their catalogue for the new acoustic-led album “Songs of Surrender,” including such songs as “Vertigo” “Bad” and “One.”

But Letterman not only distracts, he gets in the way. We watch him wander around Dublin shopping with his clueless, oddball sense of humor, as if the show was about him. “I’m interested in a wheel of cheese. I’ve never purchased a wheel of cheese,” he says.

There’s even a weird sequence in which Bono is reduced to drawing a map of Ireland for his guest and unpacking the complex history of Irish-English animus. “Who do I dislike in this?” asks Letterman. The answer is Letterman.

The documentary does a masterful job of giving context to U2’s rise, the social, religious and cultural changes taking place in the late 1970s and ’80s in Dublin, or as Bono says “as Ireland moves from black and white into color.”

There are insights — some small, like that drummer Larry Mullen Jr.’s nickname growing up was “The Jam Jar,” and some big, as when Bono reveals tensions within the band regarding his activism — and moments to celebrate, like the band’s important Super Bowl halftime show after 9/11.

But then there’s Letterman popping up again — visiting polar swimmers or stopping by the recording studio, offering no real insight. Bono and The Edge even write him a goodbye song. Letterman is empty-handed.

Watching the documentary you start to realize how crucial The Edge is, and even get to listen to him sing a few songs and tell the story of how he came up with “Sunday Bloody Sunday” while delivering the riff on a guitar. Bono brings up how key his bandmate is, in a sweet way, live in concert.

“The thing I don’t like about Edge is that he doesn’t need me. He could be doing all of this — writing, singing, performing, playing, producing — on his own. But he doesn’t,” Bono says.

“Because it’s not as much fun,” The Edge replies.

The only thing that ruins this special chemistry is the film’s third wheel — the American with the wheel of cheese.

“Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman,” a Disney+ release streaming Friday, is rated TV-14. Running time: 124 minutes. We are looking for a π-shaped VP

Cameron Diaz returned to acting last year after an eight-year hiatus, a welcome return for the hilarious actress. She’s simply a riot, as proven in her spread of comedy films over the years. She was launched into stardom with The Mask, Diaz’s first-ever onscreen performance, and then a few years later, she firmly established her bona fides with an exuberant co-starring role in My Best Friend’s Wedding. But it was There’s Something About Mary, the Farrelly Brothers’ wildly successful comedy, that cemented her status atop the A-list. Easily fluctuating between the worlds of small-budge indies and major Hollywood blockbusters like Charlie’s Angels and even the critically acclaimed Shrek 2, it’s safe to say Diaz successfully took Hollywood by storm.

We compiled a complete list below of genuinely funny films that star Diaz. Some of our selections won’t come as a surprise, but others might make you say, “Oh right, I forgot she was in that!” And it goes without saying that we’d love to see Diaz back in action with a future comedic release — especially in a reunion with Drew Barrymore!

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

8 Charlie’s Angels (2000)

Columbia Pictures

Elizabeth Banks’ recent reboot may have flopped, but the 2000 version of Charlie’s Angels was certainly a hit. And it was darn funny — remember Bill Murray’s co-starring role? The premise centers on a trio of elite private investigators armed with the latest in high-tech tools, high-performance vehicles, martial arts techniques and an array of disguises unleashes their state-of-the-art skills on land, sea and air to track down a kidnapped billionaire-to-be and keep his top-secret voice-ID software out of lethal hands. This high-octane update of the original 70s TV series features great performance, and did we mention Diaz is a hoot? Watching her dance in the mirror while making the bed is laugh-out-loud material, to say the least.

7 Knight and Day (2010)

Regency Enterprises

Diaz’s team-up with Tom Cruise, Knight and Day, may have received mixed reviews, but the two have good chemistry, and benefit from a pretty funny script. The action-comedy starts on June Havens (Diaz) as she chats up her charming seatmate on a flight out of Kansas, but she doesn’t realize that she will soon land in the middle of an international adventure. The fellow passenger, Roy Miller (Cruise), is a covert operative who claims he has been set up to take a fall. Now becoming his reluctant partner, June must dodge bullets, leap rooftops and more — all the while bickering at the mysterious Roy.

6 My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

roberts-diaz-my-best-friends-wedding-1997-tristar
TriStar Pictures

Here’s a throwback for you. Julia Roberts fans might forget that Diaz is also a lead player in My Best Friend’s Wedding. The classic rom-com follows childhood friends Julianne (Roberts) and Michael (Dermot Mulroney), who had a deal to marry each other if they were still single by age 28. Now, four days before her 28th birthday, O’Neil announces he’s marrying a gorgeous 20-year-old named (Diaz). Suddenly realizing her true love for Michael, Julianne vows to stop the wedding at all costs. However, when she is appointed maid of honor, things get even more complex. It’s a laugh-out-loud ride and further proves Diaz can bring the comedic chops when needed.

5 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

diaz-fear-loathing-las-vegas-1998-rhino
Rhino Films

This is another one of those where you’re like, “Ah yes, Cameron Diaz was in that!” Her fun little cameo as a reporter successfully adds to the greater comedic forces at work in Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s renowned book. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas centers on fictional journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) as they drive a convertible across the Mojave Desert to Las Vegas with a suitcase full of drugs. As their consumption of drugs increases at an alarming rate, the stoned duo trash their hotel room and fear legal repercussions. Talk about a funny movie — watch out for that “ether binge” scene, plus a Tobey Maguire cameo that will make your head spin.

4 Being John Malkovich (1999)

cameron-diaz-being-john-malkovich-1999-gramercy
Gramercy Pictures

Speaking of head spinning — Diaz continued to extend her comedic reach by joining a Charlie Kaufman exercise in insanity that is Being John Malkovich. In this quirky cult-favorite, unemployed NYC puppeteer Craig Schwartz (John Cusack) reluctantly takes a temp job as a filing clerk for the eccentric Dr. Lester (Orson Bean). While at work, Craig discovers a portal that leads into the mind of renowned actor John Malkovich. When he lets his co-worker (Oscar-nominee Catherine Keener) in on the secret, they begin both an unusual business scheme and an odd relationship that involves Craig’s restless wife Lotte (Diaz). Highlight scene goes to the “Malkovich, Malkovich” scene, where the actor plays every character inside a restaurant.

3 The Mask (1994)

diaz-the-mask-1994-new-line-cinema
New Line Cinema

Diaz’s first feature role, ladies and gentlemen. What started as a small role evolved into a major starring turn once the folks behind The Mask realized how terrific of an actress Diaz is. The storyline centers on timid bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey), who discovers a magical mask containing an ancient spirit. While wearing the mask, Ipkiss becomes a supernatural playboy, exuding charm that catches the eye of a local nightclub singer (Diaz). Unfortunately, under the mask’s influence, Ipkiss also robs a bank, which angers a mafioso (Peter Greene), and chaos soon ensues. There are funnier Jim Carrey films out there, but The Mask certainly brings the laughs.

2 Shrek (2001)

fiona-shrek-2001-dreamworks
DreamWorks Animation

Who doesn’t love Shrek? Diaz’s voice work in this Oscar-winning gem holds up well opposite Mike Myers as the titular ogre. Shrek 2 was also a hit, but it’s tough to top the original in this franchise. In the first film, laced with a top-notch pop-music soundtrack, we watch as Shrek’s precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). Shrek ultimately cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona (Diaz) to be Farquaad’s bride. And don’t forget Shrek’s unwanted partner-in-crime, Donkey (Eddie Murphy, never better). Shrek proved that Diaz can provide killer voice work on the animation front.

1 There’s Something About Mary (1998)

cameron-diaz-theres-something-about-mary-1998-20th-century-fox
20th Century Fox

No. 1 on our list goes to Diaz’s titular role from the late-90s comedy, There’s Something About Mary. It’s usually a good start when you sign on to a Farrelly brothers film, after all. Diaz plays Mary, aka Ted’s (Ben Stiller) dream prom date. Thanks to an unbelievably gross-out turn of events, the prom date never happens, and years later, Ted hires Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to track down Mary so that he can reconnect with her. Pat lies to Ted about Mary, and finds out everything he can about her to trick her into dating him. Ted ultimately strikes back, and we’re left rooting for him and Mary all the way. Stiller and Dillon get most of the zinger one-liners in the film, but Diaz is hysterical as a dream girl in distress. “How does my stomach taste” is just one of her memorable quotes, after Pat goes in for a brutally intense kiss.

Earlier today, Sony launched version 7 of the PS5 software, which includes support for VRR at 1440p resolution and Discord integration for PS5. But the latest PS5 firmware update also rolled out several quality-of-life improvements for PS5 owners.

Thanks to the latest firmware update, US and UK can now use voice commands to capture gameplay. These users can say actions such as “Hey PlayStation, start recording” to begin capturing gameplay footage. This feature is convenient for those who want to capture gameplay footage without using button prompts to start recording.

Sony also made it easier for PS5 owners to find their VR games. Using new filters in your game library, you will be able to filter out and quickly locate all your PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 games you currently own.

The latest PS5 firmware update makes it easier for PS5 owners to access their PS4 saved data. When users install a PS4 game on their PS5 and have a saved data file, a notification will appear in the PlayStation Network cloud storage. PS4 to PS5 data transfer aside, the latest firmware update makes it easy to transfer PS5 data to another PS5 console by using a local Wi-Fi network or LAN cable.

The last noteworthy thing introduced in the new PS5 firmware update is that PS5 owners that own a game’s physical disc can now use the same disc installation to play the digital copy without inserting the disc into their console.

The update follows the recent release of the PlayStation VR2, which we called a “quantum leap” over the original device in our review. The next major PS5 game is Resident Evil 4 Remake, which figures to push the platform harder than pretty much any game to date. It is also being released on PS4, PC and Xbox Series X|S.

For more info on the new firmware update, check out the changelog for the full list of new changes in the PS5 firmware update.

When I saw the poster for Problemista, a film that tackles issues of immigration, I wondered why Tilda Swinton — who stars — was on the poster. After seeing it, I now understand. Written and directed by Julio Torres, the movie takes on the U.S. immigration system and isolation, all packaged in a sweet surrealist bow. Alongside Torres, the film stars Swinton, Rza, Isabella Rossellini, Catalina Saaverdra and James Scully.

The movie begins with Alejandro (Torres) as a boy in El Salvador. He’s sitting in a field with his artist mother Delores (Saaverdra) drawing pictures. She shields him from the world by encouraging him to create safe spaces for himself, so the young boy retreats inward where he explores the boundaries of his wild imagination. As an adult, he lives in New York City with the goal to become a toy maker with Hasbro. The young man has tried many times to apply for work at the company but is denied. With expiration of his work visa upon him and to pay the rent, he works at a cryogenic center Freeze Corp, a place where folks go to be put in cryosleep to be revived in the future. He takes care of the frozen body of Bobby Ascencio (RZA) that’s locked in a cryotube and meets Bobby’s wife Elizabeth (Swinton), who shows up in the facility causing a ruckus complaining about how expensive everything is.

Alejandro sees Elizabeth as a hydra of sorts who antagonizes him often with her erratic fits, so he wears a block of armor in his visions in his fantasies to protect himself from her and the world around him. There is constant reference to this maze of bureaucracy, depicted by rooms with keys and rooms with locked doors, one on top of each other, where he keeps missing the key to break free of the red tape. It’s plain to see why one would see the world this way when the risk of deportation looms over their head. The style of absurdity is a perfect descriptor of how absurd the hierarchy is.

Torres has an active imagination and whatever he is thinking is exactly what we see on screen. He’s taken a simple story about immigration and human connection, and turned it into a comedic, surrealist fantasy that serves as a critique of capitalism. Even if the concept is kookie, it’s still a style of storytelling that distinctly belongs to Torres; no one would be able to pull this off except him.

The cast is strong, particularly Swinton who is all-in, with the snappy dialogue and outrageous costumes.  In Problemista, she’s an entitled super Karen and is everything wrong with American society, but Alejandro uses that to his advantage. As unbearable as the woman is, she tends to get her way even if it is by screaming, gaslighting and being obnoxious. Alejandro understands he can’t fully adopt this attitude, but he can become a problem for others in his own way.

Problemista is about authenticity and learning to be confident enough to take up space. Especially as a person of color who often feel invisible, or feel they must shrink themselves in order to fit in. Sometimes you’ve got to cause a little chaos and let that anxiety push you to succeed, which I’m sure Torres had to deal with a degree of chaos to make this film happen. There is something exciting about seeing your work come to life. The first piece is always the most sincere, and honest, but in order for that to make sense to the audience, the cast has to believe in what they’re doing, which is why this film is a certified hit.

After the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley Bank last week, it’s perhaps worth noting that with the failure of tech-sector lenders and startups alike, an entire constellation of associated industries suffers as well. The pain trickles down throughout the community, impacting the likes of the Pakistani-American small business owner and his family at the center of Imran J. Khan’s 90s-set feature Mustache.

Although such a scenario might not appear to be entirely amusing, Khan finds the humor in hardship when his 13-year-old Muslim protagonist is forced to readjust his life after his parents make a difficult decision about his education. While not a typical teen comedy, Mustache approaches the genre from a perspective that’s gently humorous and refreshingly clever, even if it’s quite a bit tamer than mainstream fare.

The Bottom Line

A fresh, amusing take on a familiar genre.

Cast: Atharva Verma, Alicia Silverstone, Rizwan Manji, Meesha Shafi, Ayana Manji, Melody Cao, Krishna Manivannan, Hasan Minhaj
Director-screenwriter: Imran J. Khan

1 hour 23 minutes

Comfortably coasting through eighth grade at his private San Jose Muslim school, Ilyas (Atharva Verma) has a much bigger concern than the usual teenage preoccupations with peers, parents and parties: his wispy, dark mustache. It’s been growing ever since he was ten and although he hasn’t fully hit puberty yet, it’s getting increasingly problematic, prompting a sense of “profound self-loathing,” as he rather dramatically describes his level of discomfort. According to Islamic custom though, it’s forbidden for him to shave it off and his parents aren’t at all sympathetic about his situation, so he’s stuck.

Things go from uncomfortable to intolerable when school administrators unfairly accuse Ilyas of starting a fight with a classmate in response to relentless teasing about his facial hair. When the school withdraws his scholarship as punishment, his parents Asiya (Meesha Shafi) and Hameed (Rizwan Manji), unable to afford full tuition as his dad’s business teeters in the run-up to the dotcom crash, decide to send him to public high school instead, much to Ilyas’ dismay.

Worried that he’ll become a “bad Muslim” from exposure to his public school’s many corrupt influences, Ilyas develops a plan to force his parents to reverse their decision by indulging in mildly reprehensible behavior with the guidance of his new best friend Arun (Krishna Manivannan). When his tentative forays into distinctly non-halal fast food and rap music fail to sufficiently scandalize his folks, Ilyas hits on the idea of faking a relationship with cute classmate Liz Park (Melody Cao), fully convinced that they won’t overlook a forbidden girlfriend.

Recognizing his limitations, he recruits an actual girl to advise him on strategy: whipsmart Yasmeen (Ayana Manji) from his Muslim school, who only agrees because she secretly harbors a crush. In an effort to further his plan, Ilyas hesitantly joins the high school acting class taught by drama teacher Miss Martin (Alicia Silverstone) so he can keep closer tabs on Liz. Impressed by his performances in class, she soon recruits him to hang out with the other theater kids, and before long Ilyas realizes he’s fallen for his own ruse: Now he really does wish Liz could be his girlfriend, but he has no idea how to proceed.

Khan provides a clear set of complications for Ilyas to navigate, including a complex array of religious requirements and prohibitions that generate much of the film’s humor. However, as his decisions begin to resemble the hypocrisy of the adults who are rapidly losing his respect, Ilyas is faced with a decision to either imitate their behavior or reject it.

Verma fully inhabits Ilyas’ almost unrelenting anxiety, exemplified by twitchy body language and a shifting gaze in the presence of authority figures and members of the opposite sex. As his parents, Shafi and Manji credibly provide the considered guidance that a wayward teen sometimes requires, while Silverstone fulfills a mostly functional role that could have been considerably expanded.

A religion-themed comedy can be a tricky proposition, even if the tone is predominantly respectful, but Khan strikes a satisfying balance between satire and deference that’s enjoyable without excessively pushing boundaries. And that could prove an effective template for other filmmakers seeking to explore similarly complex cultural settings with sensitivity and humor.

After the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley

Harvey Weinstein will not face a new trial on deadlocked rape and sexual assault charges, a judge ruled Tuesday, including those based upon the accusations of Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

Weinstein was convicted last month on three charges, all based on the testimony of a single accuser, a Russian model and actress known as Jane Doe 1. Three other charges ended in mistrial, and one in acquittal. Weinstein was sentenced last month to 16 years in California prison, time he’ll begin serving when his 23-year sentence is up in New York.

The deadlocked charges included those tied to the testimony of Newsom, Tuesday’s dismissal means the wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom will not be brought back to testify again – something she says she never expected to do in the first place when she came forward to authorities in 2017.

The other accuser whose testimony supported charges the judge dismissed Tuesday was Lauren Young, known at trial as Jane Doe 2. She testified that one of Weinstein’s female associates “roped” her into a situation where she wound up alone in a hotel bathroom where Weinstein assaulted her.

The acquitted charge stemmed from the testimony of a massage therapist who testified that Weinstein assaulted her over multiple visits, while also dangling a book deal that never materialized.

Young attended Tuesday’s hearing with her attorney, Gloria Allred, to advocate for a re-trial.

“I think Harvey Weinstein should be punished for every crime,” she said. “Even though he has been convicted in New York and L.A. for crimes against other women … I wanted him to be held accountable for what he did to me.”

Siebel Newsom was not present, but she sent along a statement that was read aloud by Marlene Martinez, one of the prosecutors in the case. “He deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison,” the statement concluded.

With Weinstein at age 70, in poor health, and with 39 years of sentences to serve in two states where the appeals process could drag out for years, that will likely be the case – which lead prosecutor Paul Thompson noted when explaining his office’s decision not to retry the charges. He also said a conviction on those charges would have only added a year or so to Weinstein’s total sentence.

The 2023 Academy Awards have ended, but

A Joanna Sternberg song is like your messiest internal monologue put to the page—raw and self-aware, warring honestly between betterment and pessimism. On 2019’s Then I Try Some More, the New York singer-songwriter sang frankly about addiction, depression, and loneliness, situating themself in the lineage of the Moldy Peaches and Daniel Johnston and winning a tour invite from Conor Oberst. Now they’re returning with a second album, the Matt Sweeney-produced I’ve Got Me. With only an acoustic guitar, double bass, and the winding curves of Sternberg’s voice, the title track “I’ve Got Me” has the immediacy and warmth of a living room performance, letting the songwriter’s matter-of-fact lyricism shine as they sit with their neuroses. “Between self hatred and self awareness/Is a very small thin line,” they sing, as candid and conversational as ever. “I waste so much time, I mean it,” they add, “So much time.” By the track’s climax, Sternberg moves from a whisper to a bellow, announcing a plan to set their own self-deprecation aflame; it feels like they’re finding their confidence in real-time.

Swiss documentary film festival Visions du Réel has revealed the first titles of its 54th edition, which runs April 21 to 30. The event will open with the world premiere of “Nightwatchers” by Juliette de Marcillac, which was filmed at night in an idyllic Alpine resort a stone’s throw from the French-Italian border. As night falls family ski days give way to a game of chase between the police and the volunteers who help migrants.

Mostly doctors, they roam the mountain slopes at night, watching for the arrival of migrants who have just completed long, life-risking journeys. Police surveillance is permanent and denunciation is commonplace, pushing the exiles ever higher up the mountain.

“It is a cinematic experience in a breathtaking twilight setting, bringing to light a vital and powerful closely-knit network,” the festival said.

Twelve feature films will compete for the Audience Award in the Grand Angle section, including three world premieres. The first is “Nightwatchers.” The second is “Planet B,” which tells the story of two Extinction Rebellion activists. For four years, filmmaker Pieter Van Eecke followed the beautiful and mischievous friendship between Bo and Lina, two teenagers who are as enthusiastic in their ecological activism as in their experience of the contradictory and surprising travails of growing up. The third is “Behind the Lines” by Syrian filmmakers Alisar Hasan and Alaa Amer, who focus on the city of Idlib’s first female cartoonist, interweaving animation and live action.

The non-competitive Highlights section will also present an eclectic program that testifies to the vitality of non-fiction film – as well as its formal and narrative freedom – including films by Claire Simon, Paul B. Preciado and Mehran Tamadon.

The full program will be announced on March 28.

Grand Angle
The Grand Angle competition, where 12 titles compete for the Audience Award (CHF 10,000), features premieres of films that are soon to make waves at festivals, as well as those that have already won over international audiences.

The selection includes the international premiere of “The Mountains” by Danish director Christian Einshøj, a film that combines autobiography with a story of a superhero in search of redemption; as well as the European premiere of Indian production “Against the Tide” – fresh from its Sundance premiere – which explores fishing, the techniques and its economic and social issues.

Finally, the selection includes a series of Swiss premieres, such as “The Echo” by Tatiana Huezo (2021 VdR Atelier) – honored at the last Berlinale – and the spectacular Franco-Swiss production “Paradise” by Alexander Abaturov, that tells the story of one heroic village’s struggle against “The Dragon,” the nickname given to the fires ravaging the Siberian taiga.

Highlights
The non-competitive Highlights section presents 11 Swiss premieres that the programming team felt essential to include. Two films echo contemporary concerns about identity.

Philosopher and activist Paul B. Preciado’s first feature film, “Orlando, Ma Biographie Politique” – a cinematographic, collective essay invoking the work of Virginia Woolf – foretells a joyful punk revolution that puts an end to binarity.

“Notre Corps” by Claire Simon (the fest’s 2018 Guest of Honor) invites viewers on a sensitive and personal immersion in a political ode to the female body.

The Highlights program also features films that reflect modern day crises, such as “My Worst Enemy” by Franco-Iranian Mehran Tamadon, which deploys a chilling cinematic device to unaffectedly expose the violence of the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran; and “When Spring Came to Bucha,” co-directed by Ukrainian artist Mila Teshaieva and German filmmaker Marcus Lenz, which captures on-the-ground witness accounts from residents of the city of Bucha about the war crimes committed by the Russian army.

A missing British mother who vanished in Tenerife nearly a week ago is safe and has returned home ‘tired and confused, but fine’, her delighted husband has revealed.

Giuseppe Bizzarro, 73, has confirmed his wife Kate Barley Bizzarro, 60, has returned home safely shortly after he insisted he did not believe her disappearance was voluntary.

Nearly a week after she was last seen walking her two dogs, Mr Bizzarro said in an emotional message: ‘My wife has only been home a few minutes and is tired and confused but she is fine.

‘Thank you to everyone for their help. I am happy this situation has been resolved in the best way.’

He had previously urged tourists and locals to contact police on the island if they had any information about the whereabouts of his missing wife.

Kate Barley Bizzarro, 60, was with her two dogs when she disappeared in Adeje in the south of the island last week

He said he was clocking up around 500 miles a day travelling around the island, and that he had even hired a helicopter to look for his wife.

She went missing at around 6pm on Wednesday, March 8, when she set out to walk their two dogs. Spanish missing persons’ platform SOS Desaparecidos described her case as ‘urgent’ in an alert it posted earlier about her disappearance.

Speaking as combed beaches and countryside with the help of their youngest son Richard, who lives in Tenerife, the dad-of-three previously said: ‘I’m desperate for news of my wife.

‘We’ve been married 41 years and have three grown-up children and this is so out of character for her.

‘The last time I saw her was around 6pm last Wednesday when she took the car and said she was going to go for a walk with our two dogs, a Yorkshire terrier called Lukey and a chihuahua called Jimmy.

‘She didn’t say where she was going or what time she’d be back but she tended to go down to a beach near the place we own here and I’ve searched that high and low without any positive results.

‘She had no problems in life, she wasn’t depressed and she’s never ever gone missing like this in all the time I’ve known her.

‘I’m praying obviously it’s not the case but that’s why I fear something bad has happened to her. This is definitely not a voluntary disappearance.’

Mr Bizzarro, who was born in Naples but met and married Kate in Brazil where her British parents were living and working at the time, had flown to Tenerife with his wife at the end of January for a two-month break.

The construction worker, who divides his time with Kate between homes in Monte Carlo and southern Tenerife, said: ‘We have three children. The youngest one who is 28 lives in Tenerife and is helping me with the search.

‘The older two are in their thirties but are flying to Tenerife later this week. One lives in Russia and the other in Monte Carlo.

‘I’ve been driving the best part of 500 miles a day round the island looking everywhere for my wife, on the coast, in the mountains, in the countryside.

‘I even went up in a helicopter I hired yesterday with a private pilot to see if that would make things easier when it came to combing the island, but it was very difficult.

‘I’m going into the police station where I first reported my wife missing every day to see if there’s progress.

‘The car she left our house in has a GPS tracker and I don’t know why they haven’t been able to find it yet.

‘There’s been no sign of the vehicle, which is a four-door white Smart Bianca and not a common car at all, and no sign of Kate or the dogs.

‘I’m going everywhere with her photo and pictures of the car and the dogs in the hope it will jog someone’s memory and they will be able to help me and the police find her with any little bit of information they can remember.’

Mr Bizzarro said Kate’s parents, who were both British, had died and her stepdad lived in Australia. Kate speaks English, Italian and Portuguese.

He said: ‘Our other two sons are going to join in the search as soon as they get here but hopefully we have some good news before they arrive.’

An initial SOS Desaparecidos appeal said: ‘Kate Barley Bizzarro aged 60 disappeared on March 8 in Adeje.’

In a second appeal marked ‘urgent’, the Canary Islands branch of the organisation SOS Canarias added: ‘Kate was accompanied by her two dogs, a white Yorkshire and a beige chihuahua.’

Shutting down the rumors. Nicola Peltz Beckham spoke out about her alleged feud with mother-in-law Victoria Beckham.

“I’ve said this so many times: There’s no feud. I don’t know. No one ever wants to write the nice things,” the model, 28, said in her Cosmopolitan cover story, which was released on Tuesday, March 14. “It’s really weird, actually, whether it’s my life or someone else’s life or whatever, when you know the truth and then you read something totally wrong.”

Luckily, she has a good support system with close pals, including Selena Gomez. The “Wolves” singer is besties with both Nicola and husband Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, whom she married in April 2022.

Nicola Peltz Talks Alleged Victoria Beckham Feud, Selena Gomez Friendship
Shane McCauley for Cosmopolitan

“I had met [Selena] once in passing a few years ago, and then we all went to this event in September, the Academy Gala. We just clicked and had the best time. And then we became super, super close,” the New York native recalled.

Nicola couldn’t help gushing over her friend. “I feel like she’s my soul sister,” she added. “I love her so much. She’s truly one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met in my whole life. The kindest person ever. Truly, her heart is gold. I feel like I’ve known her forever.”

Gomez knows what it’s like to face the constant feud speculation that Nicola and Victoria deal with. Nicola married Brooklyn, 24, at the Peltz family estate in Palm, Beach Florida. They’d been dating since 2019, but amid their romance has been speculation about tension between the Bates Motel alum and the former Spice Girl.

The newlyweds shut down rumors in August 2022 while addressing Nicola’s decision not to wear a wedding dress designed by Victoria, 48.

“I was going to, and I really wanted to, and then a few months down the line, [Victoria] realized that her atelier couldn’t do it, so then I had to pick another dress,” the Last Airbender star explained in her husband’s August 2022 Variety cover story. “She didn’t say you can’t wear it; I didn’t say I didn’t want to wear it.”

Brooklyn, for his part, wasn’t fazed by the ensuing rumors of a feud. “They’re always going to try and put people down,” he told the outlet of their haters. “But everyone gets along, which is good.”

Rumors have resurfaced amid the wedding lawsuits. According to documents obtained by Us Weekly, Nelson Peltz, Nicola’s father, alleged in the December 2022 filing that event planners Nicole Braghin and Arianna Grijalba refused to refund his $159,000 deposit. The suit claims that Braghin and Grijalba recommended that the Peltz family hire another wedding planner after just nine days of working on the event.

The party planning duo responded last month with a countersuit asking for more than $50,000 in damages and accusing the Peltz family of making difficult demands on short notice and communicating poorly. Nelson, Nicola, her mother, Claudia Peltz, and wedding designer Rishi Patel are named in the filing.

The countersuit also claims that the Peltzes were worried about Victoria finding out about hiccups in the planning.

“Both Claudia and Nicola had insisted that Victoria Beckham could not know about any internal mistakes regarding the ongoing planning of her son’s wedding, including any errors with the guest list,” the filing claims.

A representative for Nelson told the Daily Mail that the countersuit is “replete with inaccuracies” and that the claims have “no merit.”

The TikTokification of Spotify has begun.

The audio giant is refreshing its home page with a vertical feed that is meant to better integrate Spotify’s offerings across music, podcasts, videos and audiobooks. Users will be given video previews of music and podcasts that they can scroll through, with recommendations powered by machine learning, on the home feed, executives said at Spotify’s Stream On event on Wednesday.

“This marks the biggest change Spotify has undergone since we introduced mobile 10 years ago,” Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said. “This evolution is really about bringing Spotify to life.”

The major product updates come as part of Spotify’s goal to reach 1 billion users by 2030, which would be double what Spotify currently has in 184 markets, according to Alex Norström, Spotify’s co-president and chief business officer. The changes to the home feed and user experience are meant to lean into Spotify as a discoverability tool, rather than for keeping users on the platform for a long time, Spotify co-president and chief product and tech officer Gustav Söderström said.

“While we are building very effective mechanisms for discovery, we are not optimizing for time spent in the feed like other platforms,” Söderström said. “Spotify optimizes for helping you discover content.”

Spotify’s new home feed

Courtesy of Spotify

On the podcast side, the updates further support Spotify’s bullishness on video for creators. The platform currently has more than 70,000 video creators, according to Julie McNamara, Spotify’s head of global podcast studios. To encourage more creators to upload video podcasts, the audio giant is opening up its video publishing tools to all podcasters — not just those using Spotify’s Anchor platform. Spotify is also looking to boost listenership for its podcasts by adding an autoplay feature that will automatically play another podcast episode based on a user’s tastes after an episode ends.

But video is largely informing Spotify’s approach to creator deals, as the audio giant said it has inked video podcast deals with YouTube creator Markiplier and TikTok creator Drew Afuolo. With Markiplier, video episodes of his podcasts Distractible and Go! My Favorite Sports Team will be available exclusively on Spotify beginning on Wednesday. Afuolo’s The Comment Section will move exclusively to Spotify beginning on April 5.

Other, more artist-driven features were announced on Wednesday as well: concert listings and artist merchandise will be featured prominently throughout the app, allowing fans to find tickets more readily, and a new ‘Fans First’ program will send emails and push notifications to interested listeners, ensuring they get special access to an artist’s pre-sales and exclusive offerings. “It makes sense to meet them where they are, and your fans are listening to your music on Spotify,” Joe Hadley, Spotify’s global head of artist partnerships and audience, said about the new features.

In an effort to connect artists with their fans more directly, ‘Spotify Clips’ allows artists to upload 30 second, TikTok-esque videos to their artist profiles for behind-the-scenes content of their process, ‘Countdown Pages’ allow fans to ready themselves for a new release. Chloe Bailey, who’s debut solo album In Pieces arrives on March 31, told the audience on Wednesday that “each song on this album stems from my personal experiences…Spotify Clips is a really powerful way for artists to interact with fans, and talk about an unreleased song or a story behind the song.”

The company is also rolling out more tools to promote artists and engage the algorithm in their favor: ‘Marquee’ spotlights new releases, ‘Discovery Mode’ allows artists to identify priority songs they’d like to gain traction, and ‘Showcase’ introduces an artist’s music catalog to users who the data suggests will become likely fans.

Spotify also unveiled its annual music royalties report, Loud & Clear, which tracks the amount of money artists are generating, and details the money the company funnels back into the music industry (nearly 70 percent of every dollar made on the platform).

“We want you to think of Spotify as the sandbox to play to experiment and to create. And as we grow together, we aim to be the best home for you — no matter where you are in your career,” Ek said in closing out the event. “At Spotify, we believe change is the only constant. And that notion is so core to who we are that it’s embedded in our team manifesto. We’ve never been content to sit idly by and wait for others to forge new paths. We want to learn faster than the world around us. And to do this, we’ve dedicated ourselves to relentless innovation. And therein lies my commitments: We’re going to keep building, we’re going to keep improving.”

There may not be much to laugh about when it comes to the Silicon Valley Bank crash last week, but “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon spun up some solid quips on the matter Monday night by poking fun at President Biden, former president Donald Trump and more.

“A lot of people are talking about this: Over the weekend, the U.S. economy was rocked after Silicon Valley Bank, becoming the second largest bank failure in U.S. history,” Fallon said at the top of his monologue. “It’s never good when people who are watching CNBC are shrieking louder than the people watching ‘Scream 6.’”

If you haven’t been following SVB’s collapse, here’s a quick rundown: On Wednesday, the bank told investors it needed to raise just over $2 billion to offset $1.8 billion in losses, leading to a number of high-profile venture capital clients pulling their assets from the bank, totaling a staggering $42 billion. As a result SVB was left with a negative cash balance of $958 million. So, on Friday morning, regulators shut the bank down and seized its assets.

“Silicon Valley Bank knew they were in trouble when they saw themselves in the Oscars in memoriam,” Fallon said of the fallout. “On the bright side, it was refreshing to hear about a crash that had nothing to do with the self-driving Tesla, don’t you think?”

Biden has since come out to insist to the American public that the banking system is safe, which the “Tonight Show” host found reassuring.

“In response to the crash today, President Biden delivered a speech and assured Americans they can have confidence that the banking system is safe,” Fallon said. “Hearing from Biden actually did make me feel better because you know if it were really bad he’d be like, ‘Kamala, you take this one.’”

Fallon then ribbed the president’s age: “Biden tried to put everyone at ease. He said, ‘Don’t worry, I got through the first Great Depression, I’ll get through this one.’”

The SVB portion of his monologue wrapped with a Trump impression:

“Meanwhile in response, Trump said, ‘It’s times like these where we need a president with experience of multiple bankruptcies,” Fallon said.

Cyrus has never really made a great front-to-back album—2013’s Bangerz, weirdly, is probably most listenable the whole way through—and, with Endless Summer Vacation, “no skips” remains out of reach. A run of understated early tracks, largely produced by Harry’s House collaborators Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, is interrupted by the interminable Harmony Korine co-write “Handstand,” the kind of grooveless synth dirge that helped 2015’s Flaming Lips collaboration Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz sink like a stone. “Handstand” is built around a heavy-handed boat metaphor that never seems to go anywhere, and confoundingly introduces a character called Big Twitchy, a constant presence in Korine’s paintings. It feels as if, after exercising the kind of restraint that’s rare across her catalog, Cyrus finally let herself slip back into mindless excess.

Cyrus has said Endless Summer Vacation is loosely divided into “AM” and “PM” sections, and it’s the nighttime songs, roughly beginning with “Handstand,” that grate. “Wildcard” unsuccessfully retreads the “I’m damaged” regretfulness of “You” with less panache; “Muddy Feet,” a leaden collaboration with Sia, aims for tough talk and mostly lands at awkward. A decade on, Cyrus has still not found an appealing way to sing the word “I’ma,” and the song describes a cheating partner with a maddening combination of vagueness and ultra-specificity.

Indeed, a search for any of these songs brings up dozens of tabloid articles purporting to explain how they relate to Cyrus’ personal life. Thankfully, most of the album doesn’t fuel the impulse to speculate. On its best songs, such as the vampy and lascivious “River,” Cyrus effectively showcases who she is at this point in her career: Mature but still messy, not above a theatrical turn of phrase (“You’re pourin’ down, baby, drown me out”) and, very occasionally, still in tune with the big-hearted optimism that characterized her earlier music. “You could be the one, have the honor of my babies,” she sings. “Hope they have your eyes and that crooked smile.” Thrown into the middle of a horned-up dance jam, it comes as a surprise. A little like Endless Summer Vacation—which is not the sundazed party record that was promised but an exploration of how it feels when the party’s over.

First, Matt and his team organized all their sources in one place

When Rev1 started using Feedly as a team, they first organized their trusted sources for industry insights into a set of Feeds relevant to their focus areas — foodtech, insurtech, and digital health to name a few. Consolidating this information brought everyone — from partners to analysts — to one central location where they could find and share industry insights.

Rev1’s Team Feeds — collections of information sources the whole team has access to.

In Rev1’s foodtech Feed, they follow:

Then Rev1 asked Feedly AI to spot relevant insurtech topics, trends, and startups

Matt and Rev1 wanted to refine the information that showed up in their Feeds and filter out the signal from the noise. That’s where Feedly AI came in.

In their insurtech Feed, Rev1 asked Feedly AI to look for significant business events like funding rounds related to claims, underwriting, or P&C insurance. With the Business Event AI Model, Feedly AI looks for mergers & acquisitions, new product launches, or fundraising events. If an insurtech startup raised a $10 million funding round, Rev1 would know about it.

Rev1 set up AI Feeds for funding events related to claims, underwriting, or P&C insurance.

Matt created a Mute Filter to get rid of noise. Feedly AI now removes anything related to health insurance in their insurtech Feed.

“Let’s say something new happens in Singapore and has nothing to do with property and casualty insurance. Maybe it’s health insurance-related. How do you filter out those articles from the topic of focus? That’s what we try to accomplish with Mute Filters.”

Matt also used a Like Board Feed to ask Feedly AI to spot articles similar to ones they had already saved in their “Insurtech Opportunities” Board. This helps Rev1 cover blind spots if an industry-relevant article is published by an unbeknownst source.

They started sharing research findings with Team Boards

Matt created Team Boards around topics like insurtech, healthcare, foodtech, Venture Capital, and Columbus, OH startups. He used these shared spaces to save articles, add Notes and Highlights, and tag teammates that should see specific content.

Team Boards make it easy for everyone in the company to stay aligned on the topics that are most important to the business.

We centralized our favorite sources for relevant topics and no longer have to keep 30+ different web tabs for later. Then, we asked Feedly AI to sift through the information to spot contextually relevant information based on topics we care about. Thinking about where things are at now, it’s an elegant, well-oiled machine.”

The March 14 match-up between the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers will be broadcast in a new way that’s never been seen before in the history of the NHL, and it’ll look like a video game. ESPN, Disney, and the NHL have partnered for a new type of broadcast, which is a real hockey game but recreated inside a virtual stadium with 3D animated characters based on the Disney animated series Big City Greens.

How does it work? Player- and puck-tracking data will beam from the site of the game, Madison Square Garden, to create this new type of broadcast that aims to help grow the appeal of the NHL. Check out the video below to get a sneak peek at what the broadcast will look like, including a 3D chicken as a referee.

In addition to actual players like Alexander Ovechkin of the Capitals and Patrick Kane of the Rangers getting turned into 3D animated player models, the ice will be populated with Big City Greens characters. Gramma Alice and her son Bill will play the goalies, while Cricket Green will become a player on the Rangers and Tilly Green will play a Capitals skater.

ESPN’s real human commentators Drew Carter and Kevin Weekes will wear motion-capture suits, with their avatars appearing during the broadcast as 3D characters. The referee will be a chicken. He will drop the puck, fly away, and then magically appear for the next faceoff.

The Big City Greens Classic, as it’s called, will air March 14 at 7 PM ET on ESPN+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney+. If this all sounds too weird and overwhelming, the traditional broadcast will air normally on ESPN and ESPN+.

Check out ESPN’s in-depth story about the Big City Greens Classic to see how it all came together.

Jose Pozo, director of the celebrated Spanish short “Plastic Killer,” is traveling to the Western U.S. for his next feature film, “Unusual Cowboys,” which he plans to shoot this year.

The story follows Milton, a peaceful rancher and occasional musician who loses his daughter in a traffic accident. Her death has a further tragic impact on Milton’s life, leading him to sell his ranch and travel to Montana in search of Caleb, the man who failed to help his daughter in the accident.

It’s a film about two men who in other circumstances could have been good friends. Although separated by terrible circumstances, they share a common passion: Music.

Pozo is set to shoot the film later this year in Lockhart, Texas, and Butte, Montana, with additional sequences planned in Colorado and Wyoming.

The project garnered recognition in the 2020 Big Break Screenwriting Contest, where it landed in the top five in the drama category.

Producing the film are Roger Corbi and Yan Fisher-Romanovsky of FishCorb Films and David Ortiz of Arlong Productions along with Pozo, who is associate producing via his Andorra-based Imminent Produccions.

The feature follows his award-winning short “Plastic Killer,” a black comedy about a troubled woman in Madrid, which premiered last year at the Medina Film Festival in Spain and went on to screen in Malaga. It was one of four Spanish works shortlisted for this year’s live-action short film Oscar.

The film stars Laura Gómez-Lacueva as Amparo, who lives in an abandoned haberdashery with Carmela, a plastic bag that she believes to be her daughter. When a neighbor suffers a mysterious mishap, Amparo becomes a suspect. José Mota and Elisabet Terri also star.

For Pozo, who wrote and directed the film based on an idea by Rafael De Mateo, making “Plastic Killer” was a welcomed return to the director’s chair.

“I have spent most of the last few years as a producer, basically for other directors’ projects,” Pozo told Variety. “I had the need to shoot as an auteur, and although I had previously directed four feature films, I wanted to shoot something powerful, different from everything I had done before.”

Pozo came across the story idea and found inspiration in the concept itself. “I immediately imagined the universe that could be created through it: The woman living alone with the plastic bag, a true reflection of the loneliness in which many people are forced to survive without affection; the hypocritical ecologist who makes her life impossible for going shopping with a polyethylene bag, but then uses all kinds of plastic accessories; the inspector with rare diseases, which hinder his insight.

“All this told in the key of black comedy, where the situations are the ones that generate humor, but the interpretations are solid and dramatic. For me, this is the key to its success.”

In skewering the hypocrisy of some environmentalists, Pozo is also holding up a mirror to society.

“I believe that in this matter we humans act with hypocrisy in general. Most of us try to be at peace with this otherwise very necessary environmental movement. We recycle whenever we can, and we don’t throw anything on the ground that could end up in our rivers or our seas. But for some reason millions of metric tons end up littering them, and plastics don’t walk on their own; it takes human interaction.

“This is the message of ‘Plastic Killer.’ The problem is not the generation of plastics, it’s the misuse by humans.”

“Plastic Killer” was produced by Imminent Produccions and Arlong Productions.

Having also directed animated features, such as the Goya-winning “El Cid: La Leyenda” (2003) and “Donkey Xote” (2007), Pozo has another animated project in the works but is currently focusing on live-action.

Working on narrative features, he added, is much more personal than animation: it offers “tangible contact with actors and film crews, where you can transmit and interact more effectively. I feel more comfortable with this.”

EXCLUSIVE: Maybe it’s the cold. Or the relatively few hours of daylight in wintertime. Or perhaps a genetic predisposition. Whatever the case, Sweden and melancholia have become synonymous over time, a national trait explored so memorably in cinema by Ingmar Bergman and in other artforms, like sculpture. Marie-Louise Ekman’s 1,300-pound iron statue called “The Swedish Melancholy,” on display in the city of Linköping, depicts a man in sweater and cap crying actual tears (well, rivulets supplied through internal water pipes).

Sweden’s essential melancholy is explored anew in the artform of documentary film, in Vintersaga, which makes its world premiere this Sunday at the CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen, Denmark. Carl Olsson directed the documentary, which features dozens of characters who embody, in one way or another, the Swedish soul. We have your first look at the film in the clip above.

“Capturing contemporary Sweden in its diversity and its contradictions,” the film’s logline states, “Vintersaga uses 24 meticulously framed scenes from the country’s walks of life to create a bitter-sweet and richly detailed panorama of the country’s melancholy soul, organized around the verses of Swedish musician and artist Ted Ström’s eponymous song from 1984.”

Ginestra Film

Vintersaga is produced by Ginestra Film/Antonio Russo Merenda in co-production with Film iVäst/Kristina Börjeson & Jenny Luukkonen, Filmpool Nord/Katja Härkönen, Final Cut forReal/Anne Köhncke.

“Apart from being a somewhat self-defining part of Scandinavian mentality, melancholy is a multifaceted term as it embraces feelings that are in fact contradictory,” Olsson notes in a director’s statement. “There is sadness, but also a kind of romantic beauty. A memory of a deceased friend can be painful, but at the same time we do not want to let it go. Melancholy as a concept has complexity enough to generate diverse interpretations, which makes it interesting to work with in an artistic context.”

Olsson continues, “Even though Vintersaga is portraying parts of the lives of its 55 participants, it is to me a very personal film. The scenes and situations of the film are inspired by my own experience growing up in Sweden. Just like the characters in the film, I have also been freezing on rainy football fields, had deep conversations on the balcony at home parties or, in lack of places to go, hung out in underpasses in the suburbs. So with the help of their own lives, the participants have been helping me to create my personal and subjective portrait of my home country.”

Vintersaga is an acquisition title out of CPH:DOX, with international sales being handled by CAT&Docs. The film is directed by Olsson directs and produced by Antonio Russo Merenda. Cinematography is by Mathias Døcker; the editor is Sofie Steenberger. The original score is by Ted Ström (composer of the 1984 title song), Albin Ström & Johan Ström. The film’s poster image comes from a painting by Ted Ström.

In the exclusive clip above, a couple of bakery workers take a break outside their workplace. One of them says quietly, “Nobody cares about me and I don’t care about them. I’ve explained and explained, but no one tries to understand.” How’s that for melancholy?

EXCLUSIVE: Maybe it’s the cold. Or the

“I don’t think Nick or Jess would ever fall out of the commitment to do this thing together,” Johnson said during 2023 SXSW.

Jake Johnson is vowing that there is no new unexpected ending to “New Girl.”

The heartwarming finale that saw Johnson’s Nick end up with Jess, played by Zooey Deschanel, would still stand if there was ever a reunion or revival, Johnson said during a 2023 SXSW panel. The “Self Reliance” director noted that Nick and Jess would not break up since fans last saw the characters in 2018.

“I think they would definitely make it work. I don’t think they would break up,” Johnson said. “They have a kid, they’re jumping around on that bed, you guys know it way more than me. I don’t think Nick or Jess would ever fall out of the commitment to do this thing together.”

He continued, “Liz Merriweather has created a very optimistic show, it’s people who are sweet to each other. So if it’s real and they’re alive, they’re all still together. They’re just a little fatter, besides Schmidt, the hair is a little thinner besides Schmidt…If we did a reunion, Schmidt needs to be in a toupee.”

Schmidt was portrayed by Max Greenfield on the FOX sitcom that co-starred Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone. The series was nominated for five Emmy Awards between 2011 and 2018, and was streaming on Netflix from 2013 to 2023. “New Girl” will be moving to Hulu and Peacock starting April 17.

Johnson elsewhere in his SXSW keynote discussion Monday said that he was thrilled and surprised to see that new generations of audiences have discovered “New Girl” on streaming well after it aired, mentioning that while loads of people watched the show’s pilot and followed it for its first two seasons, many audiences fell off as it continued. Yet Johnson pointed out that viewers who are only age 19 are responding even stronger to a show that’s now been off the air for five years.

But he also joked that part of the reason he wanted to make his directorial debut “Self Reliance,” a movie rather than a show, is because he wanted to truly engage audiences rather than have it just be something they watch and consume in the background.

“‘Hey, I love “New Girl,” I go, ‘Thanks,’” Johnson said of interacting with fans. “‘Yeah, it’s the best, I can do my laundry, I have you on in the background,’” he sarcastically added of audiences describing binging the series in the background. “‘You’re just a voice in our house in the background, always.’ ‘Thanks, nice to see you guys.’”

While Jess and Nick are a beloved rom-com couple that have gotten a happy ending, they’re apparently one of the few.

“The Devil Wears Prada” screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna revealed that if the film were to have a follow-up, Anne Hathaway’s iconic character Andy Sachs would “definitely not” still be dating Adrian Grenier’s unsupportive chef Nate.

“Andy and Nate are definitely not together,” Brosh McKenna said earlier this year. “That much I can tell you.”

The “Your Place or Mine” director noted that the “27 Dresses” couple portrayed by James Marsden and Katherine Heigl would most likely go their separate ways as well.

“I, controversially, am not sure that Jane and Kevin from ’27 Dresses’ are still married. Just a thought,” she told Variety. “I mean, there was a lot of romantic idealization — I don’t really feel like they got the chance to know each other. That was a big ass wedding. I’m concerned.”

With historic wins like Best Actress, Asian film artists made a lot of progress at the 2023 Oscars, but there is still much work to do to keep the Academy Awards more inclusive.

To have a film centered on a Chinese American family, and more specifically the conflict between an immigrant mother and her queer daughter, win the Oscar for Best Picture is undeniably a sign of progress in the movement to get the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize more art that comes from people from marginalized backgrounds.

On Sunday night, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” made Academy Awards history on multiple fronts, most of all with lead Michelle Yeoh becoming the first Asian woman to ever win Best Actress. Her victory ended a 21 year streak of all white winners since African American actress Halle Berry became the first woman of color to win the award in 2002. Similarly, her co-star Ke Huy Quan became the second Asian man to win Best Supporting Actor, nearly 40 years after “The Killing Fields” star Haing S. Ngor became the first.

It is important to highlight the huge gaps of time between those wins, because it helps illustrate why “Everything Everywhere All at Once” co-director Dan Kwan and producer Jonathan Wang’s Best Picture win are notable in juxtaposition. Receiving the Oscar alongside their creative partner Daniel Scheinert (who also won Best Director and Best Original Screenplay Oscars with Kwan) made them the third set of Asian producers to ever win the Oscar. The first were Bong Joon-ho and Kwak Sin-ae winning for “Parasite” three years ago. The second was Chloé Zhao in 2021.

Those pushing for more diversity at the Oscars are not infatuated by all the firsts in the major categories. 95 years into an awards show it should not be a novelty for a group of people that encompass nearly 12 percent of the population in Los Angeles to win on Hollywood’s biggest night. The actual result that critics of the Academy are after is a world where people from marginalized backgrounds are given equitable consideration in every category, and that those particular nominees would not have to feel the odds so strongly stacked against them winning. Those achievements in quick succession provide some hope that minority producers will be firmly in the mix for the biggest award of the night for many more Oscars to come, rather than be excluded for decades at a time.

Adding to what was a banner night for Asian talent is “The Elephant Whisperers” winning Best Documentary Short, making the director Kartiki Gonsalves and producer Guneet Monga the first Indian filmmakers to ever receive a competitive Oscar. Their fellow countrymen M. M. Keeravani and Chandrabose also became the second-ever Indian winners for Best Original Song, for “Naatu Naatu” from Tollywood phenomenon “RRR.”

Elsewhere, the fact that Ruth E. Carter, the first Black person to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design, became the first Black woman to win two Oscars (both for her work on the “Black Panther” films) come as a surprise when one thinks of stars like Whoopi Goldberg and Viola Davis, who have become staples at the Oscars.

Overall, there is still so much more room for the Oscars to grow into a more inclusive awards show. For example, a Latina still has never won Best Actress. But the last win to highlight, that shows how talent from marginalized backgrounds still have room to make Oscar history not tied to their identity, is Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro receiving an Oscar for his 2022 stop-motion animated musical “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” and therefore becoming the first person ever to win Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Animated Feature.

Everyone knows writing and acting are two significant parts of success when producing a movie. However, the sets and locations can make all the difference for a viewer.

How do filmmakers pick their sites? They send scouts to locations worldwide and gauge where the best places are for their films. Use this guide for seven secrets in smart location scouting.

1. Consider the Film

The first step in location scouting is to consider the type of film you’re producing. Use the script to determine the right filming sites. Plots based on past centuries will be much harder to plan for, especially when going back several decades or centuries.

For example, finding architecture that authentically resembles the Renaissance can get quite tricky. Often, location scouts have to get creative when searching for film locations.

2. Be Logical

Whatever location you need, you’ll want to be logical with your choice. For example, scouts should choose rural areas relatively close to a city for the convenience of the cast and crew. Establish a central hub for everybody working on the set and keep all filming sites near this location for everybody’s ease.

Plus, making a film can be unpredictable. A cast member may have an injury or you miss the limited time available for filming. Pick sites that are logical for filming. The cast and crew are already working long days — you don’t want to work them any harder than necessary. Filmmakers should also account for transporting actors and equipment to and from filming locations.

3. Research the Area

Once you’ve decided on a location, it’s time to research. Scouts should leave no stone unturned when researching — it may be necessary to exhaust multiple options in the surrounding area. You don’t have to stick with the first location you find. Providing several choices is wise to ensure the crew gets the best shots possible.

For example, say you need a garden scene, and you select Philadelphia as the location. The City of Brotherly Love has numerous gardens throughout the metropolitan area. Bartram’s Garden would be an excellent filming location, but other sites like the Nemours Mansion and Longwood Gardens may make more sense for the movie.

4. Visit the Location

Research is vital for film scouting, but someone will need to visit the location to gauge the land accurately. Pictures can help you see the landscape, but the photographs may be old. Seeing the site in person provides a 3D view and sparks ideas for filming. Sometimes, the preferred location isn’t what you thought it would be, requiring the team to use a backup plan.

When a scout visits the location, they should take detailed notes of everything. In movies, the tiny details are significant, so be vigilant of every nook and cranny in a building and outdoor setting. It’s also wise to check out the filming site throughout the day. It may look adequate with the morning light, but how does that change when it’s the afternoon and closer to sunset? The lighting can positively or negatively affect the scenes filmed in this location.

5. Utilize Public Records

After finding the best locations for a movie, filmmakers need to acquire permission from the property owner before they can set up shop and start filming. You’ll also likely need a permit from the city or state you’re filming in. To figure out the permit process or who the crew needs to contact to get permission, look to public records.

In the U.S., many states have databases to show who owns what properties. The details can be complicated, with different companies holding various buildings in an area. Filmmakers can use the internet to find the information they need. For example, Miami-Dade County in Florida allows you to research properties, see ownership and assessments and more.

6. Scout for Other Movies

When scouting for a movie, your mind is likely laser-focused on the film you’re producing. Scouted locations might not work out for this film, but don’t disregard them forever. Keep every contact you acquire in a file because you never know when you’ll need it later.

Even if it’s a business card from a bar, keep it handy for future films. You or a friend in the industry may need the location later.

7. Remember, Less Is More

Independent films often have a tight budget, meaning every dollar matters regarding production. Filmmakers may have ideas for numerous scenes shot in various locations, but it can be significantly easier to select one site to shoot most of your settings.

Remember that less is more in the film industry. The best option for your budget is to film all the scenes in one location, especially if your movie requires international travel for the crew.

Scouting Locations for an Independent Film

The scenery can make or break a movie. Films like “Lawrence of Arabia” and “The Lord of the Rings” are renowned for their beautiful location shots.

If you’re producing an independent film, location scouting is one of the most critical parts of developing the movie. You’ll need to be creative and logical to consider the needs of your film, cast and crew.

New polling results suggest Canadians are largely indifferent to King Charles, and more than half believe his May 6 coronation is the right time for the country to reconsider its ties with the monarchy.

The web survey of 1,544 adults released Tuesday by market research firm Leger indicates many Canadians are greeting the ascension of Charles to the throne with a shrug.

Only 12 per cent of respondents said it was good news that Charles is now King, compared to 14 per cent who said it was bad news and 67 per cent who were indifferent.

Only 13 per cent of those surveyed said they felt a personal attachment to the monarchy, compared with 81 per cent who didn’t.

Majority of Canadians want referendum on monarchy ties after queen’s death: poll

The survey found the level of attachment to the monarchy has dropped since the days immediately following Queen Elizabeth’s death last September, when 19 per cent said they felt an attachment and 77 per cent said they didn’t. Indifference to Charles has also risen in the same period.

A majority of respondents said it’s the right time for Canada to reconsider its ties with the monarchy, with 56 per cent in favour and 44 against.

Anti-monarchy sentiment was strongest in Quebec, where 71 per cent said it was time to reconsider ties.

Indifference to Charles’ ascension to the throne spanned all age groups and regions of the country, although the new monarch was viewed more favourably in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and among Canadians aged 55 and older. Once again, the lowest level of positive reviews was in Quebec, where only seven per cent agreed it was a good thing that Charles is King.

King Charles’ coronation will take place May 6 at Westminster Abbey and will be marked by a procession, a concert at Windsor Castle and other events.

While 44 per cent of respondents said they were aware of the event, 73 per cent said they weren’t interested. Twenty-seven per cent of respondents expressed interest, but only six per cent said they were very interested.

Sixty per cent of respondents said they were not going to watch television or video coverage, compared to 17 per cent who said they would and 23 per cent who weren’t sure.

Polling was done between March 10 and March 12. A margin of error can’t be assigned to the survey because it was conducted online and not at random, but Leger says the margin of error for a comparable random, or probability, sampling would be 2.49 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The Google Pixel 7a might have been fully leaked, several weeks before Google is expected to officially announce the phone.

While the company has yet to confirm that it’s working on a follow-up to the Google Pixel 6a and continue its Pixel a line of phones – a line that’s more budget-friendly and less technically impressive than the flagship Google Pixel line – multiple signs suggest that it’s working on a Pixel 7a. Specs for the rumored phone were teased back in November last year, with more details and images leaking a few days ago.

Now, more leaks have surfaced, with an individual claiming to have got their hands on a developer unit of the Pixel 7a (via Zing News (opens in new tab)). Based on these leaks the device appears to be a fusion of the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7. The Pixel 7’s iconic metal camera bar makes a return, but the cameras themselves are different, with the 50MP main camera replaced by a 12MP one. The leaked phone also appears to have a 6.1-inch 90Hz display and lacks a headphone jack.

Most of these details track with what others have claimed are details of the device, except for the dual 12MP camera setup – previous leaks had suggested we’d see the 50MP camera upgraded to a 64MP snapper, though admittedly that seemed unlikely; budget-friendly handsets typically don’t surpass the same brand’s flagships, especially not their cameras.

An image said to show the Google Pixel 7a shared by Zing News (Image credit: Zing News)

Leakier than a sieve

We should always take leaks with a pinch of salt – and as convincing as the leaks here look there’s always a chance they’re part of an elaborate hoax – but leaks of this nature are nothing new for the Google Pixel line of phones.

The Google Pixel 7 had its specs leaked well ahead of its launch, and Google Pixel 6a promo images gave us a great look at the device’s upcoming hardware and software before it hit shelves too. The Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 5 were both spoiled by leaks, and the Google Pixel 4 was spotted in the wild before it could be announced too.

As such, it wouldn’t be surprising if this Google Pixel 7a leak turns out to be completely real, it would certainly be par for the course. As always we’ll have to wait and see what Google unveils for the phone, with an announcement expected for Google I/O 2023 in May based on the timing of previous Pixel announcements.

Lobbying typically gets a bad rap, conjuring images of backdoor deals corrupting politicians with money. But over in Finland, a creative agency challenged these norms with an unusual lobbying campaign using experiential marketing.

Unlike many lobbing efforts that happen behind closed doors, the campaign for Finnish retail giant S Group garnered national media attention and galvanized supporters and critics across the country. It was created by United Imaginations, an agency founded last year by three former TBWA\Helsinki executives.

The context is this: Finland’s pharmacy market is one of the strictest and monopolized in the European Union. Medicines, including cold medicines or painkillers, are only allowed to be sold at privately-owned community pharmacies.

S-Group, Finland’s largest retail chain, is lobbying for a system akin to other European countries, where medicines could be sold in retail chains, supermarkets and via online pharmacies (while still under the supervision of professional pharmacists). The retailer said in a statement that it “wants Finnish consumers to benefit from more affordable medicines, better opening hours and new pharmacy services.”

Using experiential techniques

To challenge the status quo, S Group enlisted United Imaginations, which decided to bring this debate to the public. The agency built a model pharmacy in the heart of Finnish capital Helsinki.

In the prototype pharmacy, people can browse the shelves and experience first-hand a different way of accessing medicines–thus drawing their own conclusions about whether to change the system.

“S Group wanted to rethink what lobbying could be in a modern society open to debate and new perspectives,” said Jyrki Poutanen, creative director and founding member of United Imaginations. “No hiding behind gimmicky messages, no hush-hush about their purpose. They wanted to be completely open about their role in the conversation.”

Visitors could browse the prototype pharmacy and decide for themselves whether the country needed itUnited Imaginations

The campaign took a turn when a critic noticed a typo on a package of fake vitamin D, which used the incorrect unit of micrograms instead of milligrams. The error sparked a debate in Finnish media, with the opposition arguing that supermarkets had no right to sell any type of medicine.

But that mistake, which was then fixed, ended up bringing more visibility to the campaign. The model pharmacy became headline news in Finland and started a national conversation about having a more open and competitive pharmacy market.

Baaghi 3

Cast: Tiger Shroff, Shraddha Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh

Director: Ahmed Khan

Ahmed Khan is back with Baaghi 3, an action drama with two brothers Ronnie (Tiger Shroff) and Vikram (Riteish Deshmukh) in the mix. As it turns out, Ronnie, the younger one is a tough guy while the elder brother Vikram, a bit of a wimpy kid. Fittingly they are sons to an upright cop (Jackie Shroff), who dies while in action in the line of duty. No surprise then that Ronnie is the one entrusted with the task of looking after Vikram by their father. In a clever twist, the Vikram joins the police force with a little help from his brother Ronnie. Their escapades together of mostly roughing up the baddies gets Vikram the honours for a while but eventually lands him in hot water.

Baaghi 3 is an adaptation of Tamil film Vettai starring R. Madhavan and Arya. The story is a hark back to old- fashioned style Hindi cinema, but Khan and producer Sajid Nadiadwala pack it with twists that attempt bringing a hint of freshness into the tried and tested format.

However, a foreign locale, bone-crunching scenes one after another, and piling up choppers instead of cars do not make an entertaining film. Farhad Samji’s script lacks the balance of emotion and action required in an overarching formula that the film rests on. Outlandish feats that sometimes delight, do not come to the rescue in this one. That Ronnie is a one-man army who even in Syria–where he has never set foot before until he reaches there to rescue his brother– can accomplish what America, Russia, and Israel have failed to do, feels over the top! After a point the one-sided antics of our hero beating an army of terrorists lead by their mastermind Abu Jalal (Jameel Khoury), prove tedious and tiring.

Tiger Shroff, as always is sincere and terrific when it comes to the action scenes, but now after a number of hits under his belt, he needs to raise the bar a few notches on the histrionics as well. Riteish Deshmukh lands the smaller part and clearly, one, which is vastly underwritten. Given his comic flair, giving Deshmukh a meatier role would have certainly made the film a lot more enjoyable. War, Tiger Shroff’s most recent outing in which he teamed up with Hrithik Roshan is a good example of combining two actors effectively in an action story. Baaghi 3, despite its entertaining source material, fails to do that.

Sharddha Kapoor and Ankita Lokhande too have precious little to do besides playing cheerleaders and assistants to the men in question. Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma in the supporting cast suffer the same fate.

Director Ahmed Khan obviously has a talent for helming big actioners, but Baaghi 3 certainly does not qualify as his best. That being said, this is a film obviously aimed at the single screen audience and given Tiger Shroff’s loyal following, it may just work the box-office numbers.

It’s a pity that despite its gravity-defying stunts and impressive firepower, Baaghi 3, the third edition of a successful franchise ends not in a bang but a whimper.

Rating: 2/5

The Weasel is ready for his own Hollywood comeback.

This year’s Oscars was marked by being the year of the comeback. Brendan Fraser won the lead actor category for his role in “The Whale” after years away from the spotlight. And Ke Huy Quan, who was a child star, returned to Hollywood after a 20-year hiatus, winning the Oscar for his supporting role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

The two acted alongside each other in the 1992 comedy “Encino Man,” and Jimmy Kimmel pointed out that fun Hollywood fact in his opening monologue at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday night.

“Two actors from ‘Encino Man’ are nominated for Oscars,” Kimmel said. “What an incredible night this must be for the two of you, and what a difficult night it must be for Pauly Shore.”

Well, Pauly Shore, who also starred in “Encino Man,” was watching — the stand-up comedian had been publicly rooting for his old co-stars in the week leading up to the big event — and he had a few things to say about being the butt of an Oscars joke.

“We love to hate people when they’re on top. People wanted to smash me down and they did,” Shore, 55, told Page Six. “I was always nice to everyone, always cool, I put my heart into all my films.

“You’re buying and selling a human being,” he added of working in the entertainment industry. “Human beings have feelings, it’s not like selling real estate.”

Before the ceremony, Shore posted old shots of Fraser and Quan on Instagram with encouraging captions, “So very proud of Brendan Fraser and @KeHuyQuan Truly truly happy. Must be an amazing feeling to be knighted with @TheAcademy pixie dust. I’ll be rooting for both of you guys big time. Your old buddy, Stoney Brown from Encino Man, Pauly Shore,” he wrote. “Love you both, and knock ‘em dead this Sunday night.”

The ’90s comedy star best known for “Jury Duty,” “Bio-Dome” and, of course, “Encino Man,” told Page Six that he was happy for his old buddies. But he also opened up about how sitting on the sidelines can be bittersweet.

“I do truly miss acting and I miss being on set … hopefully it happens. … [I]t’s about just dreaming and hoping,” he said. “People are always like, ‘We want you back!’”

Shore is hoping for his chance to surprise audiences with something they haven’t seen from him. And waiting for the call that will allow him to do so.

“The directors and producers are the ones with the vision. Someone out there will say, ‘You know what, we’re going to do something you wouldn’t expect — we’ll put Pauly in this role that no one would expect,’” Shore said. “That’s where my heart is.

“I am not going to stop,” he continued. “I’m going to keep going. I know I’m going to get that call, and get that opportunity. That’s what’s it about.”

On Monday, Shore posted a video clip of Kimmel’s monolgue on Instagram with the caption, “I don’t know if you guys saw the Oscars last night, but @jimmykimmel poked fun at me in the monologue. If you haven’t checked it out, watch this clip. Very funny — I really loved it. But what I REALLY loved is that my old buddies from back in the day, Brendan Fraser and @KeHuyQuan, took home the Oscars. What a story. I mean really guys, what a f— story.

“If we can all learn something from this, never quit on your dreams. Keep dreaming, work hard, and put in the time, and if your stars line up and you’re in the entertainment business, one day Hollywood will hit you in the head with the pixie dust like it did for Brendan and Ke.”

Hello everyone, We are planning a scheduled

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for the Gotham Knights premiere. The pilot episode of Gotham Knights confirms that the Batman of this reality broke his classic rule and killed The Joker. This continues a trend in recent Batman adaptations, where the Dark Knight’s use of lethal force is meant to set it apart from more traditional interpretations. In the case of Gotham Knights, however, it also serves to increase the tension between two of its lead characters.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Gotham Knights show is set on an Earth quite different from the classic Gotham City, where Bruce Wayne adopted a boy named Turner Hayes after the violent deaths of Turner’s parents. Turner is shocked by the revelation that Bruce Wayne was Batman, after his father is found dead wearing Batman’s cowl. Despite this, Turner is accused of masterminding the crime after the GCPD discover his bank account was used to pay the accused killers. This leads to Turner being arrested and confined with the teenagers accused of Bruce Wayne’s murder, and his discovery that one of them might have a motive for killing Batman beyond money.

Batman Killed The Joker In Gotham Knights

One of Batman’s accused killers is Duela Doe, who is believed to be The Joker’s daughter. Born in Arkham Asylum, Duela was said to have been in and out of juvenile court throughout her young life. District Attorney Harvey Dent quickly seized upon the idea that Duela might have gone after Bruce Wayne to avenge her father, suggesting that The Joker was killed in a confrontation with Batman. Duela later confirmed that Batman killed the Joker in a conversation with Turner Hayes, but laughed off the idea that she’d try to avenge him, claiming that “Papa J ditched me and my mom in Arkham before my first tooth came in.”

Why So Many Adaptations Have Batman Kill Joker

Batman almost kills Joker in the comics.

Gotham Knights is not the first live-action Batman adaptation to have Batman kill The Joker. Luke Fox explained how the Arrowverse Batman killed Joker to Kate Kane in the Batwoman season 1 episode 17,”A Narrow Escape,” noting that the GCPD pretended he was still imprisoned in Arkham Asylum. Batman also killed Joker in Titans’ season 3 premiere, in response to the Clown Prince of Crime murdering Jason Todd’s Robin. The reason for this repetition is that Batman is so famous for his code against killing in the comics that showing him break his one rule is a quick (if lazy) way to raise the stakes in any Batman adaptation.

Confirming that Batman killed The Joker is also a good way to eliminate any possibility of the character showing up later. While this is unlikely to happen in Gotham Knights given the character rights are tied up in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux, the question of if The Joker would show up in Batwoman or Titans arose repeatedly until the series shut down the idea. This is for the best, as there seems little point in bringing out the Clown Prince of Crime without a Dark Knight to oppose him.

Gotham Knights airs Tuesdays on The CW.
