Marvel Studios is reportedly deliberating its options for Kang actor Jonathan Majors as the actor remains in hot water following his assault arrest.

Jonathan Majors was arrested on Saturday, March 25, for the strangulation, assault, and harassment of his 30-year-old girlfriend. The actor has since gone to length to prove his innocence, with the lawyer going as far as to call him “provably the victim” and claiming there are numerous pieces of evidence to support this.

The charges are already showing an impact on Majors’ rising acting career, with the US Army having promptly pulled an ad campaign featuring the star.

Marvel Studios Deliberates Jonathan Majors’ Kang Fate

Jonathan Majors

Days after Jonathan Majors’ arrest and many developments later, Marvel Studios continued to remain silent on the situation surrounding the Kang actor.

Well, speaking on The Hot Mic podcast, insider Jeff Sneider revealed the studio “hasn’t made any decisions” on the Marvel star’s future in the franchise, but has been in contact with Majors’ agent to “discuss potential options going forward:

“I’ve heard that Marvel hasn’t made any decisions regarding Jonathan Majors but they’ve met with or spoken to his agent to discuss potential options going forward.”

Majors already filmed his next MCU appearance some time ago, with the actor set to return as Kang Variant Victor Timely in Loki Season 2 – although there have been rumors the Disney+ series will feature more Kangs.

The actor has been charged with several assault and harassment misdemeanors having been accused of assaulting his 30-year-old girlfriend. Majors “completely denies” his guilt with the MCU star’s legal team having released text messages between the couple which they claim to prove his innocence.

Marvel Studios’ Biggest Dilemma Yet?

Jonathan Majors was only arrested five days ago, at the time of writing, so the studio will probably want to allow more time before deciding what action to take. They will want to avoid taking any rash or impulsive action, particularly as Majors’ team claims to have a host of evidence proving his innocence.

Marvel Studios is undoubtedly in one of its toughest positions yet here, having built this whole saga and the next three years of storytelling around Majors’ Kang. This situation only gets tougher when looking at the reviews for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and seeing how almost all the limited praise was for Majors’ acting.

But it’s no surprise that executives at Marvel Studios would take spoken with the actor’s agents and possibly Majors himself to examine all options including continuing forward with the actor, perhaps dialing back the scale of Kang’s role, or even recasting the Multiversal villain with another star.

The situation will undoubtedly continue to have many twists and turns in the coming days and weeks. The Direct will continue to share new updates on this situation as they become available.

While Joker: Folie à Deux is in the midst of filming, new evidence may have confirmed that Lady Gaga will sing as Harley Quinn in the upcoming DC movie.

Various set photos from Joker 2‘s filming made their way online, giving fans a sneak peek of what lies ahead in the Joaquin Phoenix-led sequel. The first look at Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn was unveiled, showcasing the actress wearing the character’s classic red, white, and black color scheme.

Moreover, set videos also showed Harley Quinn in action, with Lady Gaga’s DC anti-hero committing a crime.

New Joker 2 Set Video Shows Harley Quinn’s Talent

DC

As shared by @jokerfolienews, a new video from the set of Joker: Folie à Deux where Lady Gaga can be heard singing as Harley Quinn.

In the video, the actress is singing “That’s Entertainment,” a song written for the movie The Band Wagon which was then popularized in 1960 by Judy Garland.

The part of the song that Lady Gaga is singing has a reference to a clown and a line where it says “the scene where the villain is me:”

“The clown with his pants falling down… the scene where the villain is me, that’s entertainment.”

Meanwhile, another set video also showed Gaga’s Harley Quinn kissing another woman, indicating that she could be portrayed as bisexual in the movie.

Watch the brief set video below of Lady Gaga singing:

How Joker 2’s Musical Elements Will Impact Its Story

When Joker 2 was first announced, director Todd Philipps shared a teaser showing Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn dancing against a red background to the tune of Fred Astaire’s “Cheek to Cheek,” which then led to the confirmation that the sequel is a musical.

Musical movies will sometimes feature musical numbers that auralize and visualize a character’s fantasies or inner thoughts; this could be what’s happening with Gaga’s Harley in this scene.

It’s possible that Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn are still stuck in Arkham, and they are simply daydreaming about their lives outside the four walls of the asylum.

Based on the song that can be heard in the set video, there is a chance that Fleck and Quinn are figuring out a plan to escape and it is their form of “entertainment” to imagine how to do it which would then lead to a successful scheme.

Joker: Folie à Deux hits theaters on October 4, 2024.

In the latest blog post from Niantic, we learned that Remote Raid Passes will be getting yet another change to pricing within Pokemon GO. If you were hoping for the original price to return, this isn’t it. Instead, Niantic has decided to ruin the passes even further because players were having too much fun in a Pokemon game.

Starting on April 6, 2023, Remote Raid Passes will cost 195 PokeCoins each. That’s almost double the price of the Raid Passes that cost just 100 PokeCoins now. The change will make individual passes roughly $2, but that’s not the only change to pass in Pokemon GO and we’ll cover the full situation here.

Pokemon GO – All Changes Coming to Remote Raid Passes

On top of the individual price change, the bundle will also be more expensive. Three passes together will cost 525 PokeCoins, which is a huge hike over what they used to be. The last change to Remote Raid Passes changed the bundle from 250 PokeCoins to 300. Now the price is even worse.

There will also be a limit of five Remote Raid Battles per day for each Trainer. Special Events will likely increase the limit, but the limit will be there on most days. Furthermore, players can only hold up to five Remote Raid Passes if they buy the bundle and already have two in their inventory. Otherwise, the limit should be three.

So, what’s the tradeoff for this? Niantic has said in the blog post that Remote Raid Passes can now be earned by completing the weekly Research Breakthrough. This involves completing one field research each day for seven days until you get the research. If your inventory is full of remote passes when the research is done though, you’ll get a Premium Battle Pass instead. All we can say is good luck, Trainers!

And that is all. For more of the latest news, updates, and guides, head over to the dedicated Pokémon GO section of our site.

Don’t feel bad if you haven’t heard of the name Hilma af Klint until recently — or before finding your way to “Hilma,” Lasse Hallström’s somewhat syrupy, conventional yet still respectable attempt to broaden the general public’s knowledge of, and affection for, the Swedish abstract artist. If so, you can hardly be blamed for your unawareness, considering af Klint’s longtime (and only recently reversed) obscurity in art circles.

Hers is a story as old as time: A brilliant, ahead-of-her-time woman goes largely ignored despite significant contributions to her field, while her male counterparts claim the spotlight and all the glory. In that regard, it was af Klint herself who invented the notion of abstract painting years before Wassily Kandinsky, one of the most regarded Modernists and abstract painters of all time. And when she died in 1944, her magnificent work was locked away and kept from the public eye for years.

In the last decade, extensive museum exhibitions have sought to reintroduce her art across Europe and the U.S.; “Beyond the Visible,” a 2019 documentary by Halina Dyrschka, examined af Klint’s artistic importance and imagination. Hallström continues this cinematic and cultural revival by transposing her tale into a two-hour feature that is sensual, whimsical (sometimes to a fault) and feels as comfortable to slip into as a silk robe.

The film’s cozily saccharine style and glossy sensory aesthetic — Hallström signatures across the populist likes of “Chocolat,” “The Hundred-Foot Journey” and “The Cider House Rules” — sometimes mesh well with af Klimt’s story. According to the film’s thesis, she was as influenced in her art by her kid sister’s untimely passing as she was by her eccentric spiritual leanings and curiosities. Her work is alive and ethereal, featuring dizzyingly circular patterns that feel positively galactic.

Aided by his DP Ragna Jorming, Hallström warmly embraces these qualities, for the most part with palpable curiosity for her process and inner world. But his style can work against af Klimt too. When the story docilely engages with Hilma’s younger days with her sister across pastoral settings of their youth, later squarely emphasizing her grief through recurring and predictable visions of her sister, you can’t help but feel that Hallström is a traditionalist and his subject is anything but.

Still, Hallström mostly strikes a nice balance between approachability and mystique, between the definitive and the abstract, getting a huge amount of help from his daughter Tora’s open and warm performance in her first leading role. Her real-life mother Lena Olin, on the other hand, plays the older Hilma, going door to door, trying to generate interest for her art in a cruel world that has no room for her.

We come to understand that it’s always been that way for Hilma. Hallström puts special emphasis on Hilma’s arrival at art school as a hungry, aspiring artist of wildlife, seashells and flowers. She and several other equally eager and fiery female students infuriatingly get asked to use the side entrance, in case they ever doubted their place in a male-dominated world.

It is there, in the company of four other women — Cornelia (Rebecca Calder), Mathilda (Lily Cole), Sigrid (Maeve Dermody) and Cassel (Catherine Chalk) — that Hilma forms a group called The Five, a spiritual collective that studies theosophy together and creates art collectively as a sisterhood of sorts. Hallström steers clear of cheesiness when following the clan’s seances and spiritual awakenings, while Jorming’s camera maintains a sense of feather-light otherworldliness, as well as its focus on putting the viewer in Hilma’s body, soul and headspace.

Tora Hallström truly looks and feels like a haunted creator in these scenes, channeling the experience of an artist whose brush seems possessed and conducted by unseen forces. The script gives ample space to Hilma’s collaborators, with the women both harmonizing and clashing over time. Certain passages in the film allude to Hilma’s sexuality and romantic affairs with women, but these segments never quite reach their romantic and sensual potential, ultimately feeling rather coy despite taking up a good chunk of the storyline.

There is brief room here for men too, as both pitiless detractors and vague supporters of Hilma’s work. In the former category is Tom Wlaschiha’s Rudolf Steiner, the Austrian philosopher all too eager to write off the budding artist. In the latter, Paulius Markevicius’ Edvard Munch has one of the film’s more delightful scenes. But this is a boundlessly feminine film about Hilma’s soul, and a cavernous creative yearning that gives the groundbreaking artist all the confidence she needs to perceive and interpret what the rest of us average mortals can’t see with our naked eyes. It’s an openhanded celebration, flaws and all.

“Plumbers?” “We fix leaks.” HBO has released a new trailer for White House Plumbers, its upcoming five-episode limited series starring Justin Theroux and Woody Harrelson as Watergate masterminds E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy.

Created and written by Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck and directed by David Mandel, White House Plumbers is based part on public records and the book Integrity by Egil “Bud” Krogh and Matthew Krogh. It tells the story of how Nixon’s own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt (Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they zealously were trying to protect.

In interesting and unexpected timing, the trailer dropped the same day former President Trump was indicted in the Stormy Daniels hush-money case.

Chronicling actions on the ground, the satirical drama begins in 1971 when the White House hires Hunt and Liddy, former CIA and FBI, respectively, to investigate the Pentagon Papers leak. After failing upward, the unlikely pair lands on the Committee to Re-Elect the President, plotting several unbelievable covert ops – including bugging the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex. Proving that history can sometimes be stranger than fiction, “The White House Plumbers” sheds light on the lesser-known series of events that led to one of America’s greatest political crimes.

Cast includes Lena Headey (Dorothy Hunt), Judy Greer (Fran Liddy), Domhnall Gleeson (John Dean), Toby Huss (James McCord), Ike Barinholtz (Jeb Magruder), Kathleen Turner (Dita Beard), Kim Coates (Frank Sturgis), Yul Vazquez (Bernard “Macho” Barker), Alexis Valdés (Felipe De Diego), Nelson Ascencio (Virgilio “Villo” Gonzalez), Tony Plana (Eugenio “Muscolito” Martinez), Zoe Levin (Lisa Hunt), Liam James (Saint John Hunt), Kiernan Shipka (Kevan Hunt), Tre Ryder (David Hunt), David Krumholtz (William O. Bittman), F. Murray Abraham (Judge Sirica), Rich Sommer (Egil “Bud” Krogh), and John Carroll Lynch (John Mitchell).

Harrelson and Theroux executive produce White House Plumbers with Gregory, Huyck and Mandel; alongside Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad for The District; and Rich. Paul Lee, Nne Ebong and Mark Roybal executive produce for wiip, and Len Amato for Crash&Salvage. Gregg Fienberg also executive produces. The limited series is a co-production between HBO and wiip.

“Plumbers?” “We fix leaks.” HBO has released

A Manhattan grand jury on Thursday voted to indict Donald Trump. The former U.S. president was facing charges stemming from hush money payments made to women with whom he allegedly had sexual encounters.

Multiple news outlets, including CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and the New York Times, have reported on the grand jury vote, citing sources, though no precise charges have been disclosed yet. The indictment is expected to be formally announced in the coming days, at which time Trump will be asked to surrender and face arraignment.

Trump’s indictment is historic, as no other U.S. president, sitting or former, has ever been charged with a crime. Trump, who served as the country’s 45th President from 2016-2020, has been pursuing a second White House bid since November.

As part of a years-long probe by the Manhattan district attorney, a grand jury heard from witnesses including former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who testified that in 2016 he had facilitated payments to two women, to silence them about sexual encounters they claimed to have had with a married Trump a decade earlier.

Cohen testified that, as directed by Trump, he arranged payments — totaling $280,000, and classified internally as “legal expenses” — to adult film actress Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal, to buy their silence while Trump made what would be his first successful White House run. Cohen says he was reimbursed for Daniels’ “hush money” via personal checks from Trump.

As for McDougal, The National Enquirer, acting in cooperation with Cohen and other members of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, had bought the rights to her story for $150,000, as a means to keep it from ever seeing the light of day.

In August 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to crimes related to his role in making the above payments, and served a three-year prison sentence.

Trump all along has denied that the sexual encounters occurred. He has contended that the investigation is a “witch hunt” led by Manhattan DA Alvin L. Bragg, a Democrat who is now the first prosecutor to indict a former U.S. president.

Besides the hush money inquiry, Trump faces criminal investigations in both Atlanta and Washington over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Additionally, special counsel for the Justice Department has been presenting evidence before a grand jury regarding Trump’s possession of hundreds of classified documents at his Florida estate, which were seized in August 2022; it is not clear if that investigation will result in criminal charges.

An anime series based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels is coming to Netflix, with voice casting that reunites the original Scott Pilgrim vs. the World cast. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza, Satya Bhabha, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Jason Schwartzman, Alison Pill, Ellen Wong, and many more are in the fold, plus some new cast members who will be announced later.

Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley will co-write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner of the anime series alongside BenDavid Grabinski. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright is also among the executive producers.

In a press release, Wright called the original film “one of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of [his] career.” He added, “Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&As, remembrances and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Until now… Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of ‘Scott Pilgrim’ that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also… well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.”

Science SARU is the animation team behind the reboot, and Anamanaguchi, who composed music for the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World video game, are working on the score with Joseph Trapanese.

Magical Realism is a glorious subgenre of film. Where the fantastical occurs in an ordinary cinematic reality. The province of a great many South American writers and filmmakers, Shohei Imamura, creates a sweet and kinky Japanese faerie tale in the key of Magical Realism with Warm Water Under a Red Bridge, his last film.

Originally filmed and released in 2001, this movie is being re-released as part of a celebration of Imamura’s filmography. Dead as of 2006, Imamura was a fantastically inventive storyteller for the entirety of his long career. With Warm Water Under a Red Bridge, Imamura turns his powers of Imagineering to consider a family with a secret, sensual shame. The women of the Aizawa family are blessed/cursed with a wellspring of water in their bodies. This wellspring fills over the course of a month, and when full, it drives them to compete for insane acts. The only remedy is penetrative sex with a man they’re attracted to.

So we find Saeko Aizawa (The radiant and gorgeous Misa Shimizu) shoplifting at the local grocery store, full to the brim with mystical water. Yosuke Sasano (Koji Yokusho), a ne’er-do-well salesman looking for a job, finds the earring she left behind in the store and brings them to her. This leads to a deeply intimate act of thanks, wherein Saeko is released of her magic water, and the water warms the river under the eponymous red bridge and brings forth all manner of life, including saltwater fish. At one point, a local pensioner catches a flounder(!) in an allegedly freshwater river. These sex acts of fertilizing the earth and the water break the film into five chapters.

“…leads to a deeply intimate act of thanks, wherein Saeko is released of her magic water…”

For a culture that views sex as shameful, this Japanese film does not shy away from a crisp, clean framing of each and every sex act. While we do not, thankfully, watch the full biological actions taking place, it’s quite clear Saeko and Yosuke have five intimate moments, deepening the love bond between the pair of them. This is a beautiful film and a very delightful faerie tale.

The acting is superb. The entire ensemble brings us into the quirky and sometimes kinky reality of this little town to the south of Tokyo. I especially enjoyed the African runner training for the Japanese marathon. His coach follows him everywhere on a 10-speed bicycle. Or the elderly pensioners catching all manner of unexpected fish. Or even the ghost of Yosuke’s former friend, Taro (Kazuo Kitamura), visiting to give him encouragement to seek a treasure of his. Or the geyser that releases every time Saeko releases and orgasms. Such delightful, fantastical, yet realistic things to observe.

This is a warm, uplifting romance. It plays out the way most Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn romances did. Seek this out if you enjoy a good, if kinky, romantic film. It simply has to be experienced. Also, this is the last work of a renowned Japanese filmmaker. You owe it to yourself to watch a wholesome, if sexy film like this.

King Charles today became the first British monarch to address the Bundestag in Berlin – and did almost the entire historic speech in German – as his state visit went from strength to strength.

There were nods of approval and several rounds of applause from MPs as His Majesty spoke about the ‘friendship’ between ‘our nations’, and at times the royal looked emotional to be there.

Charles also spoke movingly about the Queen’s love for Germany and how he was moved by the tributes from its people after she died last September. He added: ‘This friendship meant so much to my beloved mother, the Queen.’

The King praised Germany for standing up for Ukraine after Russia’s invasion, saying it ‘threatens’ Europe’s security but that he was ‘encouraged’ by the ‘unity’ shown by Britain, Germany and other nations.

He also joked about the rivalry between the two countries played out on the football pitch, including the Lionesses’ recent defeat of Germany’s women at Euro 2022.

There was also an ovation as he spoke of the ability of the nations to laugh ‘both with each other and at each other’ and their shared love of sport, literature and music, referencing The Beatles and Kraftwerk.

He said: ‘In just a few weeks’ time, the astonishing music of Georg Friedrich Handel – who was born a German, and died British – will once again soar through Westminster Abbey at the Coronation, just as it has at every Coronation since that of my seven times great grandfather, King George II, in 1727′.

But there was no mention of Brexit, only Germany and Britain working together on net zero and renewable energy including wind farms, a personal passion for the King.

Speaking in both German and English, Charles, 74, said he was honoured to renew the bonds of friendship between the two countries as he spoke to dignitaries and German MPs.

He also paid a touching tribute to his mother, thanking Germany for the ‘deep sympathies’ offered by the German people after the Queen’s passing.

The King referred to his mother’s first visit to Germany in 1965, when the continent was still ‘scarred’ by war.

And he noted that, since he last spoke in the Bundestag, the scourge of war has returned to Europe.

He said: ‘The unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has inflicted the most unimaginable suffering on so many innocent people.

‘Countless lives have been destroyed, freedom and human dignity have been trampled in the most brutal way [and] the security of Europe has been threatened.’

But he added that the world has ‘not merely stood by’ and that ‘we can take heart from our unity’.

‘Germany and the United Kingdom have shown vital leadership,’ he said.

‘As Europe’s two largest donors to Ukraine, we have responded decisively. We have taken decisions that might previously have seemed unimaginable.’

In an impressive speech lasting more than 20 minutes, Charles heralded Britain’s close bond with our near neighbours, while impressively switching between German and English to tell several jokes drawing huge laughs from the packed chamber.

His Majesty said despite our historical division, our shared values had been cemented because ‘perhaps most importantly, for the last fifty years we have laughed together – both at each other, and with each other.’

The chamber of lawmakers and other dignitaries roared with laughter when Charles, comparing our mutual admiration of The Beatles and Kraftwerk as well as German comic Henning Wehn and Monty Python, said millions of Brits were known ‘to admire Berlin’s vibrant culture and nightlife’.

He added: ‘In Britain, Germany’s comedy ambassador, Henning Wehn, has given us an understanding of German quirks, as Monty Python brought our own here.

The King’s Speech

By Rebecca English, Royal Editor in Berlin

The 74-year-old monarch had the nation’s elected representatives in turns clapping loudly and rolling in the aisles as he highlighted the ‘long and remarkable story of our two countries’, with shared interests in everything from music to football and comedy, and highlighted the close co-operation over Ukraine.

Standing in the packed, modern chamber watched by his wife, the Queen Consort, he said: ‘It means a great deal to both my wife and myself that we have been invited to Germany on my first overseas tour as Sovereign, and it is a particular honour to be here with you where I wish to renew the pledge of friendship between our nations.

‘Today, it gives me particular pride to be with you once again, now as King, and to renew the special bond of friendship between our countries. This friendship meant so much to my beloved Mother, The late Queen, who often spoke of the fifteen official visits she made to Germany, including her five State Visits.

‘My Mother understood the immense achievement that reconciliation represented, and in returning to Germany time and again, she was determined to play her own part. It is, perhaps, for this reason that Her late Majesty won a particular place in the affection of the German people.

‘My family and I were so deeply touched by the reaction in Germany to my Mother’s death. The tributes offered in this chamber, the Union Flag projected onto the Brandenburg Gate, and the thousands of messages in condolence books across the country, offered a tremendous comfort in our time of grief. On behalf of my entire family, I can only offer our heartfelt thanks for the extraordinary kindness that the people of Germany showed to us.’

He added: ‘Since I last spoke in this building the scourge of war is back in Europe. The unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has inflicted the most unimaginable suffering on so many innocent people. Countless lives have been destroyed; freedom and human dignity have been trampled in the most brutal way. The security of Europe has been threatened, together with our democratic values.

‘The world has watched in horror – but we have not stood by. Even as we abhor the appalling scenes of destruction, we can take heart from our unity – in defence of Ukraine, of peace and freedom.

‘Germany and the United Kingdom have shown vital leadership. As Europe’s two largest donors to Ukraine, we have responded with taking decisions which might previously have seemed unimaginable. Germany’s decision to send such significant military support to Ukraine is remarkably courageous, important and appreciated.

‘Today, our pilots are flying side-by-side on joint operations over our Baltic allies. Here, in Germany, our armies have established a joint Amphibious Engineer Battalion, which I will visit later today. Germany is the only nation in the world with which the United Kingdom has such a joint unit, an extraordinary testament to the partnership we enjoy.’

Talking of comedy he added: ‘Like all old friends at moments, the warmth of our relationship allows a small smile at each other’s expense. ‘

‘It was particularly special last year that the England women’s football team – the Lionesses – could win the Euros against Germany last year. Beyond their sporting success, both teams have promoted gender equality in such an impressive way. In so doing, they inspired a generation – in Britain, Germany and far beyond, he remarked.

‘This is just one example of how our countries, together, can offer a compelling example to the world. There are, I am delighted to say, very many more. Faced with so many shared challenges, the United Kingdom and Germany are together providing leadership to secure our shared future. ‘

He concluded: ‘Heeding the lessons of the past is our sacred responsibility, but it can only be fully discharged through a commitment to our shared future. Together we must be vigilant against threats to our values and freedoms, and resolute in our determination to confront them. ‘Like all old friends at moments, the warmth of our relationship allows a small smile at each other’s expense.’

On arrival to the Bundestag, the only organ of state directly elected by the people of Germany, the King and Queen Consort were welcomed by the President of the German Bundestag, Ms. Bärbel Bas.

Charles and Camilla were shown the Bundestag’s Golden Book, signed by Her Late Majesty The Queen and the husband Prince Philip during a visit to Berlin on July 16, 2000.

The royals then signed a new volume of the guestbook to mark their own visit as King and Queen.

After being introduced by the Bundestag president, Charles told how the building hosting him signified ‘a demonstration of what binds our two countries’.

Partially burned down in 1933, before being heavily damaged in WWII British architect Norman Foster redesigned the Reichstag impressive domed glass cupola, intended to be a symbol for transparency and accountability.

Charles said: ‘There could be few better places to do so than in this building which, in its very stones, tells the history of the twentieth century.’

As Charles constantly switched between fluent German and English, one German journalist remarked how the King ‘spoke with great honour’, adding how he was impressed with the monarch’s language skills.

After paying tribute to the late Queen, Charles spoke in German to once against thank the German people for their reaction to her passing and the friendship shown during her 15 official visits to Germany.

He said: ‘My family and I were so deeply touched by the reaction in Germany to my Mother’s death.

‘The tributes offered in this chamber, the Union Flag projected onto the Brandenburg Gate, and the thousands of messages in condolence books across the country, offered a tremendous comfort in our time of grief.

‘On behalf of my entire family, I can only offer our heartfelt thanks for the extraordinary kindness that the people of Germany showed to us.’

Charles received further applause Charles as he heralded the Kindertransporte, which 85 years ago saved the lives of more than 10,000 Jewish children from Nazism.

In the final leg of the royal visit, Charles and Camilla will tomorrow travel to Hamburg which was heavily bombed by the British leading to mass casualties ion 1943.

Charles added: ‘Tomorrow, we will once again stand with the people of Germany in solemn remembrance.

‘In Hamburg, I will pay my respects at the memorial to the Kindertransporte, which, 85 years ago, saved the lives of more than 10,000 Jewish children from Nazism, and gave them safe passage to new lives in Britain.

‘I will also join you, Mr President, and First Mayor Tschentscher, in remembering those who perished in the Allied bombing of Hamburg in 1943.’

Finishing his speech before a standing ovation, Charles closed in German to say: ‘In the long and remarkable story of our two countries, there are many chapters yet unwritten.

‘Let us fill these with the restless pursuit of a better tomorrow. The legacy of our past, and the great promise of our future, demand nothing less.’

Earlier today The King had taken home some German cheese and his wife Camilla chomped on dairy delicacies and honey as the royal couple were greeted by more huge crowds in Berlin today.

On day two of his historic state visit, the British monarch was greeted warmly by Chancellor Olaf Scholz as he arrived at the Federal Chancellery building.

He and the Queen Consort Camilla then met up at the city’s Wittenbergplaztz Food Market.

The royal couple also spoke to a range of local business owners who discussed the history of the market and the produce.

Charles shared a number of big laughs with the crowds and traders, who were keen for the couple to try their sausages, cheese, honey and fresh fruit and vegetables.

The King and Queen Consort‘s state visit to Germany, the first of Charles’ reign, began on Wednesday with a ceremonial greeting at Berlin‘s iconic Brandenburg Gate.

The monarch was meant to be in France earlier in the week but it was called off by President Macron due to ongoing protests over his pension reforms.

During a speech at a state banquet staged in his honour on Wednesday evening, Charles pledged to ‘strengthen the connections’ between the UK and Germany as he paid tribute to the ‘enduring value’ of the two nations’ relationship.

Germany has welcomed more than a million Ukrainian refugees seeking sanctuary after Russia invaded their homeland and Charles will tour the Tegel Refugee Centre to meet some of the group.

Separately the Queen Consort will visit the Refugio House community centre, a meeting place for locals and new Berlin residents, including refugees.

King Charles’ trip to Germany has been a massive hit.

On an impromptu walkabout, the monarch was affectionately offered a crown – a paper one – on the first official engagement of his State Visit to Germany yesterday.

He was undertaking a walkabout at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin when he came across a number of well-wishers who were wearing ‘Burger King’ crowns given away by the fast food giant.

One man took his off and tried to press it into the king’s hands, saying politely: ‘This is for you, if you want it.’

Charles smiled broadly and said: ‘I’m alright!’ He, of course, has a number of real ones at home. He also grinned and declined another crown from a woman who said: ‘I have a present for you’.

The King was also seen bending down to pick up a man’s cap before returning it back to him, with the grateful well-wisher thanking him and bowing.

Charles and Camilla – who posed for selfies with fans – were formally greeted at the Brandenburg Gate by Germany’s president Frank-Walter Steinmeier and wife Elke Budenbender before the national anthems were played.

In a sign of the importance placed on the visit, the couple were given the first full ceremonial and military welcome at the landmark since the Second World War. Even Queen Elizabeth II, who also visited Berlin for her last ever State Visit abroad in 2015, wasn’t afforded that honour.

They had been due to fly in from Paris but the first part of their visit to France was cancelled at the 11th hour by President Macron amid scenes of huge civil unrest in his country. It will be re-arranged at a later date.

The King spoke for the first time this afternoon about cancelling the visit, telling a reporter it was ‘very sad’.

In Berlin, Queen Consort sported a colourful turquoise coat and dress by Bruce Oldfield and a jaunty hat by Philip Treacy.

And in a beautifully personal detail, she was sporting a brooch that belonged to Queen Elizabeth, given to the late monarch by Queen Mary on her confirmation in 1942.

The King’s foresight on climate change was hailed by President Steinmeier at a green energy reception held at Schloss Bellevue.

The monarch followed a translation of the President’s remarks in a booklet and smiled warmly as Mr Steinmeier repeated them in English.

He also thanked the King for making his first State Visit to Germany, saying: ‘This visit, Your Majesty’s very first trip abroad as the new King, is a tremendous personal gesture – and for that I would like to express my heartfelt thanks. I am looking forward to the coming days and to the many opportunities we will have to exchange views.’

The monarch was told that this year work will begin on an undersea power cable between the Isle of Grain in Kent and Wilhelmshaven in Germany, with the President adding: ‘This first direct energy link highlights how closely Germany and the United Kingdom are working together to make our economies climate-neutral.

‘I regard this as an encouraging example – just as Your Majesty’s visit to Germany is encouraging.’

Last year, Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch acknowledged it had a problem.

For much of the company’s 12-year history, women and people of color had argued the platform was biased. Sexist and racist harassment were endemic, and critics said the company’s all-important recommendation algorithms, which use artificial intelligence to decide which streamers to promote to viewers, were amplifying the problem.

As part of its response, the company set up a responsible AI team to look specifically at the algorithms. At its semiannual conference, TwitchCon, the team’s principal product manager told Twitch streamers, “We are committed to being a leader in this area of responsible and fair recommendations.” He urged them to fill out demographic surveys to track potential discrimination.

But last week, the handful of people who made up the responsible AI team were laid off, part of a broader round of cuts that hit about 400 of the company’s 2,500 employees. Others who worked on the issue as part of their current jobs have been moved to other topics, according to a former member of the responsible AI team, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal company matters.

“We wanted to make Twitch more equitable and also more safe for creators from all backgrounds,” the former employee said. “This is very much a step back.”

Twitch isn’t the only company to cut its responsible AI team in recent months. Twitter did the same in November, as Elon Musk took over the company and cut three-quarters of the workforce. And Microsoft cut its Ethics and Society team, which was one of the groups that led research on responsible AI at the company, as part of its massive round of layoffs in January.

Together, the moves form a pattern of companies rethinking or pulling back on ethical AI research, often as part of broader cost-cutting, even as new applications of the technology are booming. Ethical AI experts say the breakup of these teams could result in products that are harmful being released before their consequences are fully examined.

“To me, it feels like they’re in a race, and they just want to win the race, and anybody who’s doing anything else is useless,” said Timnit Gebru, a computer scientist who once helped lead Google’s ethical AI team, before she was controversially ousted in December 2020.

Fewer than 10 people lost their jobs when Microsoft cut its team, and some former members are now working on the company’s other groups focused on developing AI responsibly, Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw said. “We have hundreds of people working on these issues across the company,” he added.

A Twitch spokesperson declined to comment on the company’s approach to AI and pointed to a blog post from its CEO that said the broader economic environment led to its layoffs. Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.

The cuts are coming just as a new wave of “generative” AI technology takes the tech world by storm, spurring a flurry of excitement, investment and product launches. Generative AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Midjourney’s image generator, and Google’s Bard chatbot can create images, write computer code and hold humanlike conversations.

OpenAI, a smaller company that was founded as a nonprofit, began pushing its products out to the public last year, giving regular people the chance to interact with tools that had previously been confined to the testing labs of giants like Google and Microsoft.

The wild success of those start-ups’ tools prompted a wave of concern at the most powerful companies that they were falling behind the cutting edge, according to conversations with current and former employees of Facebook and Google, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal company conversations. Companies that had moved more cautiously, taking feedback from internal teams that asked probing questions about the social ramifications of new products, are now moving faster to keep up with competitors and ride the wave of hype surrounding the technology.

On Tuesday, a large group of academics and business leaders including Musk, veteran AI researcher Yoshua Bengio and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak signed a letter asking AI companies to pause the training of new, more powerful chatbots.

“Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable,” the letter said.

Gebru, who went on to start a nonprofit dedicated to researching AI’s potential harms and seeking solutions, said she has come to view tech companies’ internal AI ethics efforts as “window dressing” that they’re quick to cast aside when it’s inconvenient or when they’re cutting costs. Since firing Gebru, Google has also dismissed two other leading AI researchers over the publication of critical papers. One of them, Margaret Mitchell, was hired by New York-based AI start-up Hugging Face in November.

A Google spokesperson declined to comment on its approach to responsible AI, but the company has a “Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology” team that does research on the impacts of AI tech and works with product teams at the company, according to its website. At the time Gebru left the company, a Google executive posted a memo online saying she did not follow the company’s guidelines for publishing research, though other employees said those guidelines were not generally enforced for other people.

The company has been rushing to launch generative AI products in the past few months, working to keep up with archrival Microsoft and hold on to its reputation as the top AI company in the world, according to current and former employees. All of its blog posts and product launches have mentioned the importance of developing the tech responsibly, and the company has been careful to call new, unproven products “experiments” or “previews” even as it makes them available to more and more people.

Rumman Chowdhury led Twitter’s acclaimed META team — an acronym for Machine Learning Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability — until Musk laid her off in November, along with every member of her 18-person team except one.

The team had been credited with innovative programs such as a “bias bounty,” in which the company offered prizes to outsiders who could demonstrate bias in its systems.

AI ethics is “seen as a cost center, not a revenue center,” Chowdhury said. “I think smart companies know this will cost them in the long run. But a lot of them are thinking short-term right now.”

Still, there could be upsides to integrating AI ethics work more closely into product development, Chowdhury said, if companies like Microsoft and Facebook parent Meta are serious about doing so.

After Facebook was accused of allowing foreign governments to use its platform to post propaganda that influenced American voters during the 2016 election, tech companies invested heavily in teams that dug into the broader societal impacts of their products. AI tech, which helps run social media recommendation algorithms for Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, was a core part of those teams’ research. Employees put out papers detailing negative side effects of the tech and showing how human biases had worked their way into products used by millions of people.

Some of the ethics cuts are coming as waves of layoffs strike the tech industry.

A former employee at the social media firm Snap, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters, said the company’s layoffs last summer included one of its only employees working full-time on machine-learning fairness, derailing a nascent internal working group on the topic.

Snap spokeswoman Rachel Racusen said the company does not have a dedicated AI ethics team but continues to invest in employees focused on developing products safely and responsibly, including AI. Racusen confirmed one employee’s departure but said it did not derail the working group, which she said went on to complete its work on time.

There’s a lot of attention on the big questions of whether sentient AI may be developed soon and what risks could come with that, as shown by the letter signed by Musk and other leaders asking for a pause in AI development. But focusing on those future questions may distract from problems that are real right now, Chowdhury said.

“I think it’s easy when you’re working in a pure research capacity to say that the big problem is whether AI will come alive and kill us,” Chowdhury said. But as these companies mature, form corporate partnerships and make consumer products, she added, “they will face more fundamental issues — like how do you make a banking chatbot not say racial slurs.”

Those kinds of issues were the ones that slowed the public launch of unproven AI tools in the past. When Microsoft put out its AI chatbot “Tay” in 2016, it was quickly manipulated into spouting racism and denying the holocaust. The company took Tay offline.

The new publicly available bots have had problems of their own. When Microsoft launched its Bing chatbot in February, some users quickly discovered that the bot would adopt an alternate persona with an aggressive tone, contradicting the human asking it questions and calling itself “Sydney.” Microsoft said the problem happened because of people making leading prompts and pushing the bot into a certain conversational direction. The company limited the number of questions users could ask Bing in a row.

The bots also repeatedly make up information and present it as fact, mixing it with legitimate information. Microsoft and Google have begun proactively pointing out this flaw in new-product announcements.

OpenAI, which helped kick off the current wave of AI excitement by launching its DALL-E image generator and ChatGPT conversation bot to the public before Big Tech companies had done the same with their own tools, is increasing its investments in responsible AI along with its investments in the technology, spokesperson Hannah Wong said. “While the entire company works closely together to develop and release safe and advanced AI systems, we are continuing to grow our teams dedicated to policy research, alignment and trust and safety, which are critical to this work.”

Ethical AI researchers who remain inside of companies will have to adapt and realize that they need to show their employers why listening to them will ultimately help the company avoid problems and make more money down the line, the former Twitch employee said.

“We need to make sure that communication is done in a manner such that it doesn’t seem like people who are talking about the responsible application [of AI] are gatekeeping, which we are not,” they said. “We are advocating for the safe and sustainable development of products.”

The civil trial for Gwyneth Paltrow over a 2016 ski crash went to the jury on Thursday after closing arguments from lawyers for the actress and the plaintiff, Terry Sanderson.

Paltrow’s attorney said that for the last two weeks, the actress had been “pounded like a punching bag,” by Sanderson, who compared her both to King Kong and to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein during the trial. The judge shut down Sanderson’s bizarre Epstein tangent on Wednesday.

Sanderson sued Paltrow for $300,000, claiming she recklessly crashed into him during a run at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah in 2016. She countersued for $1, saying Sanderson was the one who crashed into her.

The plaintiff’s lawyer attempted to downplay a supposed GoPro video of the incident, which Paltrow’s attorney argued Sanderson would have produced if it actually existed and proved his case. “You can conclude that it was against him and that it helped us,” he told the jury.

Sanderson, meanwhile told the jury, “Terry Sanderson did not cause this crash. You can’t cause a crash when you’re hit from behind.”

The Award-winning PBS documentary series “Independent Lens” has released its spring slate of documentary films, which will begin debuting on April 24. This season’s films will highlight a myriad of marginalized communities and current affairs by documenting both personal and important stories from around the world.

First to debut is documentary film “Free Chol Soo Lee” from filmmakers Julie Ha and Eugene Yi. The Sundance favorite uses archival material to travel back to 1970’s San Francisco and tell the story of Chol Soo Lee, a Korean immigrant who was wrongfully convicted of murder, and the Asian American activist movement that sought to free him.

Following is Anna Moot-Levin and Laura Green’s film “Matter of Mind: My ALS”, which will premiere May 1. The documentary tells the story of three people in the U.S. living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Reed Harkness’s film “Sam Now” premieres May 8, and shares the story of Harkness and his half-brother’s quest to find their missing mother. Jasmín Mara López’s “Silent Beauty” premieres May 15, and documents López’s healing journey after being sexually abused by her grandfather 24 years ago.

Closing the season is Daresha Kyi’s film “Mama Bears,” which will premiere June 20. The documentary follows conservative, Christian mothers Kimberly Shappley and Sara Cunningham as they advocate for their LGBTQ children and the queer community. These two “mama bears” are willing to lose their friends and family and challenge their own faith as they fight for their children’s rights.

“This spring on Independent Lens we’re looking at trauma and perseverance within families,” said Lois Vossen, executive producer of Independent Lens. “We spotlight a Korean immigrant whose life and wrongful incarceration inspired a watershed moment in Asian American history, excavate how women survived sexual assault within a family, observe young men as they face the pain of their mother leaving the family, and reveal the challenges of living with ALS. These intimate stories remind us of the dignity of each human life.”

Kang the Conqueror‘s connection to multiple objects and artifacts throughout the MCU will be further explored in the future according to Avengers 5 writer Jeff Loveness.

In the Infinity Saga, Thanos‘ main goal was to find and use the six Infinity Stones to achieve what he believed would make the universe a better place.

The popular theory when it comes to Kang’s role in the MCU is that he will try to get his hands on some similar artifacts that allow him to have complete control and reign over the Multiverse.

It is believed that some of these Infinity Stone-like artifacts have already been introduced in the MCU and that there is a specific connection between them and Kang’s current technology.

Kang’s Technology in the MCU

Marvel

In an interview with Backstory Magazine, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty writer Jeff Loveness talked about Kang’s technology as a whole, as well as how it ties into the greater MCU.

When asked about the scene in the Loki Disney+ series where He Who Remains is explaining that his different Variants were trading technology, Loveness stated that “it ties into a bigger question” of what the character’s technology really is, and how it “makes him such an existential threat:”

“Yeah, I mean, that, I guess, ties into a bigger Kang question in general of like, what is his technology? What makes him such an existential threat? What makes Kang similar to each other, and unique? And then the Rick and Morty guy in me is going, ‘Okay, you also just don’t want to rip off the portal gun, or like the Rick technology, or whatever.’”

Loveness then confirmed the connection between Kang’s rings on his Time Chair and other ring-like artifacts with “glyphs” on them in the MCU. He alluded to the Ten Rings in Shang-Chi, and also Kamala Khan‘s bangle in Ms. Marvel:

“But like yeah and I guess this gets into spoiler territory, but I’m sure people have picked up the fact of like, ’Oh, he has ring technology. That’s interesting. Or, he’s got, ‘Oh, those glyphs look a little similar.’ So, I think we’ll be seeing that Kang has had his fingerprints on the MCU for a long time.

There were previous rumors that both of these artifacts would act as the Infinity Stones of the Multiverse Saga. However, Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development seemed to deny these claims, but it appears as though Loveness is fully embracing the concept.

Loveness also mentioned Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania‘s post-credits scene, where all of the Kang Variants “teleported in” to the same location, subtly hinting that that scene was a connection to how Reed Richards teleported in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:

“And if you saw the end credit scene, teleporting in looked very similar to someone else as well from ‘Multiverse of Madness.’ So like, I think there is a concerted effort to kind of tie some of his technology language together, but without saying too much, I suppose. But, he’s been all over.”

Subtle Connections Throughout the Multiverse Saga

One of the biggest criticisms from fans throughout Phase 4 was the fact that none of the projects seemed to be as connected or have the same sense of direction as the Infinity Saga did.

However, as Marvel Studios often does, this was likely intentional, and it could all be leading up to a climactic moment of realization for fans to make them see how everything ties together and leads back to Kang.

After all, the Infinity Saga displayed this concept in a way when it subtly teased Thanos before showing him on-screen in The Avengers.

It is difficult to know who to believe when two different reliable figures are saying things that contradict one another.

However, just due to the sheer similarities between the Ten Rings, Kamala Khan’s Bangle, and Kang’s Time Chair, it would be hard to believe there isn’t some sort of connection – especially when all three have similar functions.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty comes to theaters on May 2, 2025.

Don’t count on seeing Michelle Rodriguez in Avatar 3. Back in 2009, Rodriguez was featured as part of the cast of James Cameron’s original Avatar movie, playing the role of combat pilot Trudy Chacon. The character goes down in a blaze of glory, sacrificing herself so the Na’vi can retain control of Pandora. Trudy did not return in Avatar: The Way of Water, but the sequel did bring back other dead characters from the first movie, leaving the door open for Rodriguez to potentially return in Avatar 3 or beyond.

Not so fast, Rodriguez says. Per Vanity Fair, the Fast & Furious franchise star has now addressed her future in the Avatar movie series. While she has said goodbye to Avatar long ago, Rodriguez reveals that Cameron actually approached her with the idea of bringing Trudy back in an upcoming Avatar movie. However, it appears that this won’t be happening, as Rodriguez doesn’t want to tarnish the character’s legacy following her heroic ending. As Rodriguez puts it:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

“Dude, when I saw Jim [Cameron] recently, he was like, ‘I was thinking, “What if Michelle came back? A lot of the other characters came back [in The Way of Water]. I was like, ‘You can’t do that—I died as a martyr.’”

With that said, Rodriguez admits that part of her refusal to come back for Avatar 3 is also because she keeps playing characters in other movies that came back after they were thought to be dead, and it would just be “overkill” at this point to do it once again. Rodriguez explains:

“I came back in Resident Evil, I wasn’t supposed to. I came back in Machete, I wasn’t supposed to. I came back with Letty, I wasn’t supposed to. We can’t do a fourth [time], that would be overkill! … I don’t understand, it’s so weird. I guess they don’t know what to do with the girl who doesn’t have a boyfriend. ‘She doesn’t have a boyfriend. Should we keep her alive, or kill her?’”

James Cameron Regrets Killing Off Michelle Rodriguez’s Avatar Character

Cameron has also recently said he made a big mistake by killing Trudy off in Avatar. Per Showbiz CheatSheet, Cameron recently spoke about how much he enjoyed working with Rodriguez on the original film, noting how everyone who came out of that shoot had an “abiding affection for who she is as a person.” He went on to note how he regrets killing off her character in Avatar, feeling she showcases the same “integrity” as the woman who played her.

“The character of Trudy has this amazing integrity, and that’s who Michelle is. I mean, I’m kind of kicking myself today that I killed her off.”

Don’t bet on Rodriguez appearing in Avatar 3, but as for where you can see the actress, she’ll soon be on the big screen for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The film is hitting theaters on March 31, 2023.

Nani’s Dasara, Review: The bar is on fire!

One way of owning a film, an extension of the auteur theory, would be to name the film with your name preceding the title. Might sound quirky to some, but so what? It is his film, and he can call it Nani’s Dasara or whatever else he likes. But you do wonder why Telugu actor Nani chose to call it his Dasara when he has neither written nor directed it, not even produced it. The nomenclature is a reference to the Dasara (Dussehra) festival, which forms the climax of the story, in which case it should have been Dharini’s Dasara, for that is his name in the film. Incidentally, the film is dedicated to the late actress, Silk Smitha, and her poster is prominently displayed time and again.

Nani’s Dasara takes pains to be different from the blood bath Telugu stuff dished out in the recent past, but only partly. When the time comes, there is no holding back of the choppers. In between, the film involves us in a delicate love story, well-treated, and also presents hordes of characters who guzzle alcohol by the bottle. It is this mish mash that takes you away from the earthy, deglamourised flavour, that more often than not, rings true. Nani’s Dasara is a cocktail that may not be everybody’s cup of tea. It leads to a spectacular climax, but by then the viewer has had more than his share of the various concoctions.

A clever, slippery coal wagon thief, who can outsmart the police at will, Dharini lives in a village where everybody drinks, and drinks hard, so does he. As a child, he grew-up nursing secret infatuation (actually love) for Vennela. His best friend was and is Suri, who is madly in love with Vennela, a love she reciprocates. Dharini does not let anybody get a whiff of his one-sided love. Vennela, now a school-teacher, is to be married to Suri. The village is a hotbed of politics, and the headman (sarpanch) gets to run the only bar around, and make tons of money. Suri approaches the women in the village, women who have never voted in any election. He convinces them they should vote for a particular candidate. Against all expectation, his man wins, a victory his opponent is very bitter about.

Out of the blue, a bunch of deadly assassins attack Dharini and his friends. They have to run for their lives, but they just cannot shake off their predators. Suri gets hold of a cycle and, with Dharini at the back-seat, he pedals like hell. But a deadly chopper blow decapitates Suri. When the mayhem ends, three of Dharini’s friends are dead, and Vennela is a widow before getting married. This breaks Dharini’s heart twice over. He is wondering who the assassins were, for he is sure they came from outside his village. And then he discovers that a secret admirer of Vennela is behind the murderous attack. He goes to the man’s house, but finds that he is away for a day. But his wife confirms that her besotted husband will go to any extent to get Vennela.

One of the four writers, Srikanth Odela, has directed the film. The other three writers are Jella Srinath, Arjuna Paturi and Vamsi Krishna P. This is Odela’s debut film, after assisting Sukumar in Nannaku Prematho and Rangasthalam. With some liberties, the film can be divided into four parts: 1. The coal-thieves and drunkards 2. The childhood love triangle 3. The political mafia and 4. The Dasara Climax. Nani’s Dasara is a good example of four writers working in four different narrative directions. To an extent, Srikanth Odela has succeeded in intertwining the four tracks, which is to his credit. The biggest inspiration seems to be the 1964 Raj Kapoor film, Sangam, about the eternal triangle, though the writer(s) have given it an interesting twist here.

It’s an odd mix of impressive scenes and tropes. The old woman (mother?) of Dharini, and the two politicians, are type-cast. On the other hand, the scenes of Dharini breaking down at Suri’s death and his revolutionary decision to save Vennela her trauma, strike a chord. The coal heist opening is merely a whistle opportunity, while the burning down of the bar is a novel twist. Why do comely village belles have to be school-teachers? Raw, earthy look is well created, and the designation of Dharini as a member of a low Hindu cast is in the fitness of things. The Muslim card is played, but only as a token. His friend’s advice to Dharini to go to Vennela and confess his love is ill-conceived, as it would achieve nothing. She is strongly in love with Suri. It is indeed odd to see the politician’s wife accompany him everywhere, even when he goes out to threaten people. This is all the more confusing, because she hates him and his wayward ways. As was explained by Nani at a press meet a few days ago, the names of the three lead-players have significance: Dharini means the earth, Vennela means the moon and Suri stands for the sun. Whatever symbolism might have been intended by these choices, it was lost on the audience, at least of the dubbed Hindi version that we were shown.

From a clap-trap opening, Nani goes through two major role-plays: the first is that of a drunken lout and the second is that of a moping but sacrificing one-sided lover. It is not a major challenge to any actor worth his salt to play drunken lout. The second one demands some under-acting, and he rises to the occasion. And then there is the one scene where he steals your heart, when he goes to meet Vennela and all her ornaments are being removed because Suri is dead. He does a great job of reacting to the decapitation of Suri. As it happens, there are very few scenes between Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) and Nani. Keerthy Suresh pairs with Nani after Nenu Local. Though she does not have a major role, she impresses within the few scenes that gets. A regular glam-girl in real-life, she is made to look dusty, and it is to her credit that she shines in spite of the deglam. Cinema is in her blood, being the daughter of producer G. Suresh Kumar and actress Menaka G. Suresh. Completely uninhibited, at 30, she already has ten years of work behind her, and many more will follow.

Dheekshith Shetty is the surprise packet. His role as Suri was kept under wraps, and he more than justified his casting. And this is only his second feature. He has sharp features and an emotive countenance. Adequate support comes from Shine Tom Chacko as Chinna Nambi, Samuthirakani as Shivanna, Chinna Nambi’s father, Sai Kumar as Rajanna, Shivanna’s step-brother, Jhansi as Vennela’s mother, Poorna as Chinna Nambi’s wife and Rajsekhar Aningi as Inspector Nagaraju.

Cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan captures the raw, earthy colours but is sometimes too dark. Editor Naveen Vooli has probably had to let his scissors talk, for so many scenes start with a jerk, and yet the film is 147 minutes long. The songs in Hindi, composed by Santhosh Narayanan, are some of the most sub-standard stuff I have heard.

Not too many films have their characters guzzle like fishes, but how many films can you count where the hero, in a moment of inspiration, sets fire to the only bar around, thereby by heralding a new era of a liquorless village? It’s hard to believe that help was might not have been needed from Alcoholics Anonymous, before the utopian dream of a teetotaler village was realised, if at all. After all, a bar is all about fire and ice. It could be here today, there tomorrow.

Daisy Jones & The Six

At what point does a TV band become, well, just a band? It happened to The Monkees, and The Commitments, and even spoofy hair metal rockers Spinal Tap (who opened for themselves as the equally goofy trio The Folksmen from A Mighty Wind on their 2001 tour, no less!). Does it have something to do with the stand-alone quality of the music and the power of the vocals behind it (looking at you, iconic 2019 Gaga/Cooper “Shallow” performance), or maybe the popularity 0f the group’s tour (how many Gleeks out there still have their t-shirts)?

If all it takes is recording and releasing an album that actually goes on to become a hit, then the titular band from Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & The Six–the first from a scripted series to nab a #1 spot on the Billboard Emerging Artists chart–is now a real band one and a half times over.

(Side note: We could say the same for The Six’s fictional predecessor The Dunne Brothers, although we have a sneaking suspicion their single “Look Me In The Eye” has been streamed over half-a-million times on Spotify because the way Sam Claflin says the word “wheel” is really freaking funny and not because the song is, you know, actually any good.)

Even though the show concluded with two (heartbreaking) episodes last week, the band–led by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin–is not done yet. Atlantic Records dropped two more previously unreleased tracks from the show’s penultimate episode today as a “special gift for our fans”: “It Was Always You,” the (a little too on-the-nose) ballad Daisy sings to not-quite-lover Billy, and “Aurora – Live From SNL.” You can listen to the new tracks here.

Josh Whitehouse, who plays bitter bassist Eddie in the series, teased the release this morning in a Tik Tok talking about showing up at the studio for band practice with Daisy Jones & The Six. Could this be just for these two songs or is the much-teased tour finally happening? Either way, we’ll never say to watching more mess and angst from these crazy kids.

2023 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Television Movie

“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” (The Roku Channel)
Everett Collection

Weekly Commentary: Serious subjects regarding U.S. intelligence, quirky comedies about parody musicians and populist genre sequels are among the television movies seeking love from the TV Academy.

HBO acquired the docudrama “Reality” featuring double Emmy-nominee from last year, Sydney Sweeney (“Euphoria” and “The White Lotus”). From debut writer and director Tina Satter, which tells the story of Reality Winner, the woman convicted of leaking a confidential report on Russian election interference, could be the dose of reality (no pun intended) that could appeal to Academy members.

On the flip side, even though Amazon Prime Video’s “Shotgun Wedding” received mixed reactions, the rom-com will ride into the TV awards season with the star power of producer and star Jennifer Lopez, alongside last year’s Emmy-winning producing team behind Disney+’s “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers” — Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman and Alexander Young.

The TV movie category has been a race that has brought little excitement over the past few years, once dominated by “Black Mirror” episodes before the TV Academy changed its rules in 2018. However, depending on who you ask in the industry, a breath of fresh air was brought with “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” won last year, the first animated winner in the category’s history.

This year, there are inspired and critically acclaimed contenders in the running most notably the parody biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” featuring Daniel Radcliffe (a possible challenger to Evan Peters?) in the lead role as the iconic musician. Released by The Roku Channel, the comedy premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival which has led to a strong performance on the guild circuit, picking up wins from the Critics Choice and PGA Awards ceremonies. In addition, director Eric Appel was the only TV movie helmer nominated for a DGA award alongside limited/anthology series. That indicates love and respect.

We’ll also see if the TV Academy can find room to embrace horror films like the Predator franchise film “Prey” or if Dolly Parton is still a default selection for her NBC-distributed “Mountain Magic Christmas” after winning in 2021 with Netflix’s “Christmas on the Square.”

Emmy Nominations voting runs from June 15-26. The Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced on July 12. Check back every Thursday for the latest updates. All information is preliminary and is subject to change.

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” began right after “Saturday Night Live” was placed in a different Emmy category. The two perennial winners now contend against each other in the new Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category.

We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2023 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, with an edited presentation of the ceremonies to be broadcast on FXX at a later date. Finally, the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Monday, September 18, and air live on FOX at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” versus “Saturday Night Live” might be the most interesting new match-up at this year’s Emmys. Both series have been on major winning streaks in wake of the Outstanding Variety Series category being split in two in 2015, but are now being pushed to be in contention against each other for the first time ever thanks to an Emmys rule change that’s sprouted the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category.

Though one of their 6+ years winning streaks will come to an end because of the new designation, the more important part of the whole situation is that it allows for more shows to actually get nominated in the category. Though the TV sketch comedy space has had a really interesting few years, thinking of the range of shows from “How to With John Wilson” to “The Amber Ruffin Show,” the past three years at the Emmys have been this David and Goliath-esque showdown between HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

As of right now, it seems like the category will have four nomination slots, so there is a chance shows that have been doing steady, celebrated work like “Sherman’s Showcase” (IFC) and “Ziwe” (Showtime) could finally get some recognition at the Emmys. Or past winner “Inside Amy Schumer” could make it back in, after returning to Paramount+ last fall.

Plus there are two high-profile, cameo-filled series “Documentary Now!” (IFC) and “History of the World: Part II” (Hulu) in contention this year, and sure to attract a lot of interest from voters given the names that are attached to them. The former comes from Emmy winners Bill Hader and Seth Meyers, plus 14-time Emmy nominee Fred Armisen, while the latter is a long-awaited project from 96-year-old EGOT winner Mel Brooks.

Current Contenders (In Alphabetical Order):
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” (HBO)
“The Amber Ruffin Show” (Peacock)
“Documentary Now!” (IFC)
“History of the World: Part II” (Hulu)
“Inside Amy Schumer” (Paramount+)
“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” (HBO)
“Pause with Sam Jay” (HBO Max)
“Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
“Sherman’s Showcase” (IFC)
“Ziwe” (Showtime)

More Category Predictions:
Outstanding Animated Program
Outstanding Talk Series
Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series
Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special

To see IndieWire’s full set of predictions for the 75th Emmy Awards click here.

Last Year’s Winner: “Saturday Night Live”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: “Saturday Night Live” has a five year winning streak right now, benefitting from the split that happened in the Variety Series category in 2015 (it became the Variety Talk and Variety Sketch categories). However, when that split first happened, it was Comedy Central that had the initial winning streak with “Inside Amy Schumer” winning in 2015, and “Key & Peele” winning in 2016, so NBC’s long-running late night variety series is not unbeatable.
Notable Ineligible Series: “Murderville” (Season 2 was not eligible); “I Think You Should Leave” (submitted as a Short Form Series)

"Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" began

Like countless other fans over the years, Julie Bowen put her hat in the ring for Harry Styles‘ heart at one of his recent concerts. Her homemade sign at the 29-year-old pop star’s January show in Inglewood, Calif., got a lot of laughs for its bold message — “Harry, I’m old but I know what I’m doing” —which the actress opened up about in a Thursday (March 30) appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show.

Speaking with Hudson, Bowen explained that she attended the concert with a group of kids including her son who all made signs of their own. “They’re like ‘Harry, I love you,’ and I went with five girls and my son,” she recalled.

The Modern Family star was inspired to make a heart-shaped sign decorated with a string of Christmas lights, adding her personal proposition for the “As It Was” singer. “I think, like, he could do worse than me,” she told Hudson. “I mean I’m not the youngest, but I think I could show him a good time.”

The 53-year-old Happy Gilmore actress excitedly showed off her sign on Instagram, taking a video from her spot in the venue before Styles went on. “Harry, I’m here!” she cheered.

Bowen had previously professed her admiration for the Grammy winner on The Ellen Degeneres Show, where she said she’d definitely come out of dating “retirement” if Styles were interested in a courtship. “Hell yeah,” she said on the talk show. “Look at him!”

Unfortunately for her and millions of other heartbroken fans, the “Watermelon Sugar” singer might be off the market once again following his relationship and split from Don’t Worry Darling director and costar Olivia Wilde. Styles was recently spotted making out with model Emily Ratajkowski on the streets of Tokyo following his concerts in the city’s Ariaka Arena.

Like countless other fans over the years,

Data breaches have become an increasingly common problem in today’s digital era. Thus, it is as much essential to protect your data from being breached or stolen. With problems, there are always some solutions, and GDPR principles are what you need. The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) is a set of regulations that protects the privacy of the data shared by the customers and held by the firm. It is as crucial for a firm to protect the data they have collected, and complying with the GDPR principle will provide them with a clear and straight path to do so.

With the rise of technological advancements, companies and individuals alike have been collecting vast amounts of data. Searching online about data breaches will help you discover how big companies such as Facebook, Equifax, and Target have been affected by it. Data breaches can be particularly damaging in the scenario for film crews. Jeopardizing the safety and privacy of the staff and individuals working on the film. This is where the GDPR principles come in handy. In this blog, we will discuss the GDPR principles following the GDPR training and how they can be helpful for a film crew.

Seven principles of GDPR

  • Lawfulness, Fairness, and Transparency

Each word in this first principle of GDPR has its unique role. All three roles of Lawfulness, Fairness, and Transparency combine to create the first principle.

Lawfulness refers to an organization collecting the personal data of its customers with legal consent. A company should never gather personal data without consent. Getting the user’s approval is a legal and most common way to collect data. Not doing so means being non-compliant with the first GDPR principle.

Fairness refers to collecting the data for good interest and utilizing it legally. One example can be a firm collecting its customers’ data and then using it to change its products accordingly.

Transparency means that the firm is clear with the data. They should tell the users what, how, and why they process the data.

This principle states that the data collected must only be for an intended purpose. The purpose of a corporation must be specified and legitimate. If the business wants to use the collected data for any other purpose, they must ask the users again for their consent.

Data minimization prevents users’ data from lying around if not needed. A firm should always keep only the minimal information necessary. Often many firms keep different types of data on their customers. Still, they intend to avoid using it and keep it lying around.

This principle of GDPR states that the data must be precise and accurate. A firm should ensure they do not keep old data, meaning the erasure of such outdated data.

A firm should not store the personal data of its users which is no longer in use for the purpose intended.

Additionally, a firm should explain how they plan to keep its data to its users. Also, ensuring the data’s erasure after being utilized.

  • Integrity and confidentiality

This principle focuses on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Confidentiality refers to keeping the data safe and secure. Meaning that only authorized personnel can get access to the data. Integrity ensures that the personal data collected is correct and safe.

Lastly, an organization should take responsibility for the data they are processing while complying with all the laws. A firm can sign and record tracking documents to ensure compliance with GDPR principles. The GDPR regulators know that a firm can lie about its compliance with GDPR. Thus, they demand proof in the form of documentation.

GDPR Training: Helping film crews avoid data breaches

Training is a blessing and the best practice an employer can provide its employees. As training is essential in understanding a particular subject. Similarly, GDPR training helps individuals and organizations understand the GDPR and how to follow them. Training is necessary because failure to comply with GDPR can result in significant fines and reputation loss. As by now, you would be familiar with the importance of GDPR training, here are some of how it can help film crews avoid data breaches.

  • Understanding the principles of GDPR: Training would give clear instructions about the principles of GDPR. By understanding GDPR, film crews can ensure that they are collecting, storing, and using personal data in a way compliant with GDPR. A film person could only comply with these regulations properly if they are familiar with them.
  • Obtaining consent: In film production, data is heavily involved. Thus, employers need to collect these data with the person’s consent. GDPR training will help film crews to understand how to obtain permission clearly and transparently. Also, keeping track of records of the support ensures GDPR compliance.
  • Security measures: Securing the data and installing measures is vital for GDPR compliance. Training will allow the film crews to understand how to establish appropriate security measures to protect personal data. Such data protection methods include encryption technologies and physical security measures.
  • Data retention: A film crew must understand that the data must only be kept for no longer than necessary. Training will help them ensure they only hold onto personal data for a short time.
  • Maintaining GDPR compliance over time: GDPR training will also teach the film crews to keep documentation of every process they perform related to data. Proper tracking and documentation will prove compliance with GDPR principles. The method also includes regular audits and risk assessments to address any areas of GDPR non-compliance.

Practises for GDPR compliance in the film industry

Conducting a data protection impact assessment (DPIA) before starting production. DPIA will help assess the potential risk to the data that may arise during production. DPIA should include an analysis of the data to be collected, how it will be used, and who will have access to it.

  • Obtaining consent from individuals before collecting their data.
  • Installing security measures to protect personal data. Only authorized people should be able to get access to personal data. Also, other safety measures such as passwords, encryption, and firewalls will be helpful.
  • Keeping records of data processing activities. Keeping records can help demonstrate GDPR compliance in case of an audit or investigation.
  • Regularly review and update data policies.
  • Only collecting the minimum amount of personal data is necessary.
  • Providing individuals with access to their data.
  • Having a plan in case of a data breach. It is the most crucial step. A firm should always inform the responsible agency in case of a data breach.

Importance of data protection in the film industry

You should know why data protection is vital in the film industry. Before that, we must understand that the safety of the personal data of a person is an essential measure. The personal data of a person is a very sensitive and confidential thing that should be kept private by all means. In case of data breaches of personal data, it can have a profound harmful impact on the life of the person impacted. It is essential to understand that human safety, whether physical or mental, is vital. Prioritizing the health and safety of the employees and customers should be a necessary practice for all firms, whether they are in filmmaking or the product industry. Online health and safety courses will help the employers of the businesses learn on how to protect their employees whether it is by health means or by data protection. Thus, the priority for an employer should always be to protect its workers, and sufficient training will allow them to practice it more efficiently. Now back to the point, here are some of the importance of data protection in the film industry.

  • Protection of data
  • Saves from loss of reputation and financial loss
  • Compliance with regulations
  • Saves from fines and restrictions in case of not complying with GDPR
  • Protecting its customers’ data helps the firm build trust among its customers.

Conclusion

To summarize, GDPR principles and compliance with GDPR are essential responsibilities for the firm collecting the data. The firm collecting the users’ data should keep in mind the seven principles of GDPR and comply with them. GDPR training is a practice that can make it easier for the firm to comply with the GDPR rules. For example, for a film crew, GDPR training can help them understand how to comply with GDPR requirements and avoid data breaches. As mentioned in this blog, there are many ways by which GDPR training helps film crews to comply with GDPR. This blog also highlights the practices a film crew can take to show their compliance with GDPR. Thus, investing in GDPR training for film crews is a wise decision that can help avoid data breaches and build a positive reputation in the industry.

Brian Mariotti, CEO of Funko, posted a message to fans of Mondo, the high-end collectibles company it acquired last year, after Mondo was hit with layoffs — including the team leading its posters business.

As part of Funko’s 10% job cuts across the company, Mondo co-founders Mitch Putnam and Rob Jones as well as senior creative director Eric Garza were laid off last week.

In a Twitter post Thursday, Mariotti confirmed that there were layoffs at Mondo but said “the majority of the companywide layoffs weren’t in Mondo.” He also wrote that contrary to early reports last week, “the Mondo posters business will continue, period.”

That said, according to Mariotti, “We feel that making extremely limited runs of posters, most of which are 150 pieces or under, limits access to fans unfairly. Many of these posters are bought with the sole purpose of flipping them at a much higher cost to fans that really want them.”

Mariotti continued, “The posters are created by some of the most amazing artists working today. Our goal is to make larger edition size runs (limited but not ultra-limited) that allow more fans to participate in this world-class expression of pop culture art. We also believe that broadening the pop-culture scope to include TV properties, sports, anime, and music will have an amazing appetite from Mondo fans and pop-culture fans alike.”

In addition, Mariotti said in the message, Funko will be “investing heavily” in production of vinyl records in the near future, with plans to build a nearly 70,000-square-foot space in San Diego that will be a combination of record-pressing factory, “record store of the future” and live music event space. Plans for the San Diego venue also include a 4,000-square-foot dedicated Mondo art gallery.

“We are 100% committed to providing all the support we possibly can for the folks at Mondo, so they can continue to make amazing products that reach a larger and more diverse Fanbase through expanded licenses, better distribution, and a better overall experience for their fans,” Mariotti’s note concluded.

Read the full text of Mariotti’s note:

Funko has been obsessed with Mondo and the amazing products that they produce for years. We believe Mondo is a pop-culture tastemaker and always has their finger on the pulse of everything that is cool.

Since there is a lot of misinformation about the recent change in leadership and the poster division of Mondo currently out there, I can tell you that our strategy is very clear.

While we did reduce our overall workforce by about 10% across Funko, the majority of the company-wide layoffs weren’t in Mondo.

The Mondo posters business will continue, period. We feel that making extremely limited runs of posters, most of which are 150 pieces or under, limits access to fans unfairly. The space will have a 4,000-square-foot dedicated Mondo art gallery as part of the vision.

Funko is also going to great lengths to invest heavily in some of the most amazing licenses around to build out the portfolio of pop culture for Mondo’s high-end collectibles division. These are dream licenses that Mondo has wanted to work with for a long time but was unable to due to financial restrictions before we acquired them.

We are 100% committed to providing all the support we possibly can for the folks at Mondo, so they can continue to make amazing products that reach a larger and more diverse Fanbase through expanded licenses, better distribution, and a better overall experience for their fans.

Jimmy Fallon and his late-night colleagues have been sharing only enthusiasm and laughter about former president Donald Trump’s potential indictment over the last week – which made reports of a delay in said indictment a particularly tough pill for the “Tonight Show” host to swallow on Wednesday.

“Now listen to this,” Fallon said in his monologue discussing the matter. “I read that the grand jury is weighing charges against former president Trump over hush payments made to Stormy Daniels is taking the next month off.”

Citing a CNBC story published Wednesday, which itself cited multiple anonymous reports, Fallon looked deflated. The news earned a chorus of boos from his in-studio audience.

“What!” Fallon continued. He then took the opportunity to joke about another political presence that’s had a habit of going on ill-timed vacations: Ted Cruz. “Even Ted Cruz was like, ‘You’re going on vacation now?!”

But the real clincher came when Fallon set his sights on the former first lady, Trump’s wife, Melania Trump. Echoing a joke made last week by James Corden, who said that Melania is praying her husband isn’t put on house arrest, Fallon teased that an indictment might actually give her something to celebrate – and she’s been planning a party for the occasion.

“Yup, a potential indictment is at least a month away,” Fallon said. “Melania was like, ‘Well, cancel the party.’”

Reports of a delay in Trump’s ongoing hush-money payment investigation broke Wednesday, stating that the New York grand jury is not expected to hear evidence for the next month, pushing a potential indictment to at least late April. The news comes 10 days after the former president declared on Truth Social that he was going to be arrested over his hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels – a prediction that has not come to pass (but one that’s gotten plenty of attention).

Trump most recently came under fire for stating his indictment would cause “potential death and destruction” and for posting threatening imagery about Manhattan DA Alvin Brigg, who’s overseeing the investigation.

Jimmy Fallon and his late-night colleagues have

Fifty years ago this week — on March 29, 1973, to be exact — the ragged New Jersey country-rock band Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show got their wish: Rolling Stone put them on the cover.

Written by Shel Silverstein, the former Playboy cartoonist and children’s book author, Dr. Hook’s hit “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone’” featured eyepatch-wearing singer Ray Sawyer on lead vocals, singing lines about buying “five copies for my mother” of the magazine. The band’s actual cover appearance was a colorful caricature of Sawyer and two of his six bandmates, Dennis Locorriere and Billy Francis. Inside was a delirious funny chronicle of the band’s travels, peppered with profanity-laced song parodies, tales of harmonizing on George Jones songs, encounters with eager young groupies on the concert trail, and the dumping of the mysterious contents of a Holiday Inn envelope just seconds before getting pulled over by a Virginia state trooper on the way to their next gig. One thing missing from the cover: the band’s name. They were instead referred to “What’s-Their-Names.”

The follow-up to their debut single, “Sylvia’s Mother,” which reached the Top Five, “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone’” peaked at No. 6 on Billboard’s pop chart. Silverstein wrote all the songs on the band’s second album, including “Freakin’ at the Freakers Ball” and “Queen of the Silver Dollar,” which was covered by Emmylou Harris on 1975’s Elite Hotel.

In 1967, Silverstein began living on a houseboat in Sausalito, California. In a freewheeling video from 1972, he and the Dr. Hook band are seen partying on the houseboat, with the songwriter joking about their origins as medical students — the group passes a joint around the room. Silverstein, who died following a heart attack at 68 in 1999, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. Dr. Hook’s Ray Sawyer died in 2018 at 81.

The performance video is taken from one of the band’s many TV appearances on series like Midnight Special, Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, and the U.K.’s Old Grey Whistle Test. For at least 20 years, it’s been obvious that the geeks shall inherit the earth, pop culturally speaking. Comic books have crawled out of the cons to dominate mainstream movie culture, “Star Wars” is ubiquitous and now “Dungeons & Dragons” has its moment in the sun. First published in 1974, the popular fantasy role-playing game has mostly been relegated to a punchline (or punching bag) in media (see: Patton Oswalt’s Dungeon Master character in comedy series “Reno 911!”).

But now the medieval-inspired game gets a splashy, big-budget blockbuster adaptation, replete with swaggering charm and sex appeal. In a perfectly full-circle media moment, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is co-directed and co-written by John Francis Daley, who played one of the primary geeks on Judd Apatow’s short-lived but much loved comedy series “Freaks and Geeks,” which had an episode dedicated to a D&D campaign (he knows his barbarians from his clerics).

Daley and co-director Jonathan Goldstein (they also directed the raunchy 2015 remake “Vacation” and the surprisingly fun action comedy “Game Night”) co-wrote the script with Michael Gilio, and they take a genius approach to bringing D&D to the masses, smuggling the heavy-duty lore of the game into a garden-variety bank heist plot. It’s essentially “Ocean’s 11” in a fantasy setting, with massive movie stars riffing on their well-known personae offering a crucial assist.

Daley and Goldstein don’t ask their team of actors to stretch much beyond what we already know and love about them. Chris Pine is on the charm offensive, Michelle Rodriguez plays a tough warrior and Hugh Grant grins and fumbles and fops endearingly, as he has for decades. With this trio in place tackling a familiar plot, Daley and Goldstein thread D&D mythos throughout in a way that’s not too challenging for a newbie but will serve as a treat for the experienced player.

Aside from its clunky title, “Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” has a relaxed, loose energy that puts the viewer at ease, especially combined with the throwback appeal to ’80s fantasy classics like “Willow,” “Labyrinth” and “Legend.” Yet the tone is decidedly modern, thanks in large part to Pine’s laissez-faire, ironic energy as the lute-playing Edgin, the bard of this tale.

Edgin’s vibe, however, is a bit at odds with his goal of reuniting his family by bringing his wife back from the dead and reclaiming his daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman) from his former compatriot Forge (Grant). He intends to do this by stealing a reanimation tablet from a magically fortified vault with the team he assembles: his ride-or-die warrior Holga (Rodriguez), insecure sorcerer Simon (Justice Smith) and disaffected druid Doric (Sophia Lillis). They receive help from stone-faced paladin Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), whose straight-arrow nature bounces off Ed’s inability to take anything seriously. This odd couple is one of the most amusing interactions of the film, but it’s unfortunately brief.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” boasts some eye-popping set pieces, including Rodriguez’s fight scenes and a truly remarkable “one-shot” sequence that showcases Doric’s shape-shifting abilities. The film’s affable nature and the sheer charisma oozing off Pine and Grant is intoxicating, but overall, there’s a sense that it doesn’t quite gel, the engine revving but never hitting the speed of which it seems capable.

Daley and Goldstein make for fine dungeon masters; the film is an unapologetically big, fun, swashbuckling slice of hardcore fantasy and leans into that without any self-deprecation, which is the core lesson for our merry band of misfits. And yet there is some ineffable quality lacking — perhaps an emulsifying ingredient — that prevents all these elements (the stars, the lore, the creatures) from coming together into something truly magical. Maybe on the next roll of the 20-sided die.

Recently, we shared an update on a beloved Marvel actor’s progress after a serious accident on New Year’s Day. Now, Jeremy Renner is telling all in his first sit-down interview since the dangerous incident took place.

Jeremy Renner

In our previous update, we saw the actor walking on an anti-gravity treadmill. His determination is a character attribute that contributes to his ability to overcome the odds.

Interview with Diane Sawyer

Today, Disney+ posted news of the upcoming interview on Instagram, along with an official trailer. In it, Renner tells Diane Sawyer, point black, “I chose to survive.”

As the video opens, we see him as Hawkeye, a superhero from the Avengers. The clip transitions to his sit down with Sawyer, where Renner talks about being awake through every moment of the pain he endured via his snowplow accident.

His nephew, clearly still traumatized, shares that he saw his uncle “in a pool of blood coming from his head.” After approaching him, he admits he “didn’t think he was alive.”

Despite all that he’s been through, Renner says that he’d “do it again.” His nephew was in harm’s way, period.

The video publicizes the 911 call made on January 1. It’s a hard listen, being that you can clearly hear Renner in immense pain.

Seven tons of machinery came down on him that day. As a result, he suffered eight ribs broken in fourteen places.

After hearing about all he endured and seeing his hospital photos, it’s a miracle that he not only survived but overcame the odds.

Renner says that despite the fact that he’s “lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience,” he’s “been refueled and refilled with love and titanium.” When he looks in the mirror, he sees himself as a “lucky man.”

Tune in to The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph, airing on April 6 at 10pm ET on ABC. It will also be available for streaming on April 7 on Disney+.

Although Star Trek: Discovery will soon end with season five, a new live-action StarTrek series will arrive to replace it. After years of rumors, Paramount+ has officially announced a series order for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. This show will follow an all-new class of Starfleet cadets. And we’ll get to see students coming of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau will serve as co-showrunners. Gaia Violo wrote the series pilot. The series will begin production in 2024.

You can read the official description of the new Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series right here:

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will introduce us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Paramount+

Paramount+ also released a special “recruitment announcement” from the legendary institution itself:

Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves.

The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!”

The mention of the Academy opening up for “the first time in over a century” suggests the new Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series will be a spinoff of Discovery. We learned in recent seasons that because of a terrible galactic incident, the Federation was reduced to just a few worlds by the 32nd century. But by the end of Discovery season three, Starfleet began the climb back, and the Academy reopened.

Many fans crossed their fingers and hoped that Starfleet Academy might take place in the post-Picard timeline. We would have loved to see characters from The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager as instructors. But it seems more likely we’ll see characters from Discovery instead. We do also hope the new Star Trek series won’t be completely Earthbound. It would be amazing to see cadets training on starships, as we did in The Wrath of Khan.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will debut on Paramount+ sometime in 2024 or 2025.

Paramount+ is ordering a new Star Trek series set in one of the franchise’s most iconic locations. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow a new class of recruits at the San Francisco training facility as they grapple with friends, rivalries, first loves and “a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.” Production is scheduled to begin in 2024.

With Picard and Discovery winding down, the network is apparently looking to a teen / young adult coming-of-age story to invite a new generation of viewers to the franchise. The series “will introduce us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers.”

CBS studios will produce the upcoming series with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. No casting decisions have been announced. Deadline first reported on the series’ development last month before Paramount’s official announcement today.

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, who will serve as showrunners and executive producers, released an announcement in the voice of a Starfleet recruitment bulletin. “For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves,” the announcement reads. “The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted.”

Although the series shares its name with a late 1990s PC simulation game, its creators haven’t specified whether the two are related. We don’t even know in which era it will take place, among Star Trek’s centuries-spanning lore. The Starfleet Academy has been mentioned or featured in numerous Trek properties, including the original 1960s series, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine (among many others).

EXCLUSIVE: This won’t come as a big surprise after so much speculation, but we hear that Wes Anderson’s comedy Asteroid City definitely is headed to the Cannes Film Festival.

Nothing official from the festival or studio, but multiple good sources tell us it’s locked for a Riviera bow in May.

And what fun that promises to be. Anderson rarely misses. Few directors deal in the depth of talent he does, either, making for fireworks on screen and the red carpet. Asteroid City is no different. If anything, it may be a notch up on the starometer even by his standards.

RELATED: Full List Of Cannes Palme d’Or Winners Through The Years: Photo Gallery

The cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan and Jeff Goldblum. There were even cameos for musicians Seu Jorge and Jarvis Cocker, who will play cowboys. If they’ve made the cut.

Bill Murray was also due to star but reportedly caught Covid just before cameras rolled last year so was replaced by Carrell.

Set in a fictional American desert town circa 1955, the film’s synopsis reads: The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.

Anderson wrote Asteroid City with Roman Coppola and produced the pic with his regular partners Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson. Focus has set a stateside release for June 16, and the film’s trailer arrives Wednesday. Above is the first poster, revealed today.

Anderson has previously been on the Coisette with The French Dispatch and Moonrise Kingdom, both of which played in Competition. The latter opened Cannes in 2012, so there remains a possibility Asteroid City could do the same.

Among movies tipped to play at Cannes this year are Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Disney’s Indiana Jones and the Dial Of Destiny. The Official Selection will be unveiled next month. It promises to be quite the lineup. Here and here are some other buzzy movies we hear could be in the mix.

Cannes Film Festival and Focus Features declined to comment.

EXCLUSIVE: This won’t come as a big

Grand premiere of the film Motherland, directed by Ukrainian-Belarusian director Alexander Mihalkovich (My Granny From Mars) and Belarusian director Hanna Badziaka, will take place at the 63rd Krakow Film Festival! This monumental work, which is a multi-threaded portrait of the oppressive post-Soviet culture of cruelty, has just received the Grand Prix at the prestigious documentary film festival CPH:DOX in Copenhagen. In Kraków, we’ll get to see the film at the turn of May and June.

When this film was proposed to us for the competition, I had known that it would be launching at CPH:DOX two months earlier. However we weren’t envious. We had the same admiration as our Danish colleagues – says Krzysztof Gierat, director of the Krakow Film Festival – Copenhagen always guarantees the highest quality. And what has been happening in Belarus and on its border in recent years deeply affects us, Poles. The recognition of the international jury only confirms our choice.

The film’s title clearly marks the role of women in the fight against the brutal regime. Svetlana, one of the protagonists, has lost her son a few years ago, who was found dead during military service. She does not believe in Sasha’s suicide and tries to expose brutal hazing customs (dedovshchina), shed light on the culture of violence and abuse in the Belarusian army. At the same time, a group of young friends from the techno underground are soon going to face conscription themselves. Their rave parties may soon come to an end. Meanwhile, massive protests are erupting on the streets following the recent “re-election” of the dictator-president Alexander Lukashenko.

The filmmakers are showing the dark side of Belarus, full of corruption and brutal military culture. Hanna Badziaka and Aleksander Mihalkovich have made a film that analyses the post-Soviet social condition from the rarely seen perspective of young people. Gripping cinematography and intimate camera closeness evoke strong emotions of fear, disagreement, helplessness but also – hope. When dedicating the film “to all Ukrainians fighting Russian aggression and Belarusian political prisoners” in Copenhagen, the directing duo thanked those who helped them make the film, especially the heroes “who had the courage to stand in front of the camera” and participate in the long process of making the documentary, which took more than four years.

The film is one of 15 titles from around the world that will participate in the International Documentary Competition at the 63rd Krakow Film Festival. Among them is also the film ‘The Hostage Takers’ (dir. Puk Damsgaard, Søren Klovborg), which received a special mention at the CPH:DOX festival. The premieres of both documentaries will be accompanied by meetings with their makers.

The Krakow Film Festival is on the exclusive list of qualifying events for the Oscars® in the categories of short film (live action, animated, documentary) and documentary feature, as well as a recommending event for the European Film Awards in the same categories.

The Krakow Film Festival is organised with the financial support of the European Union as part of the “Creative Europe” program, the City of Kraków, the Polish Film Institute, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The co-organiser is the Polish Filmmakers Association, and the main organiser is the Krakow Film Foundation.

The 63rd Krakow Film Festival will be held in cinemas from 28 May to 4 June and across Poland at the KFF VOD online streaming platform between 2 and 18 June.

Grand premiere of the film Motherland,

Just like no man, no character lives on an island.

Rabbit Hole’s John Weir has many people in his orbit, including a feisty FBI Agent, Jo Madi (Enid Graham), who is always one step behind him, a bad guy who is one step ahead called The Intern, or just Kyle (Walt Klink), and the man John is trying to protect, even if he doesn’t know it yet, Edward Homm (Rob Yang).

We caught a little time with them on a recent press day to see if they could shed some light on their characters, among other things. Take a look!

Let’s start with you, Rob, because you’re alive. Yay!

Rob: Yay. I made it through. I thought it was going to be a spoiler. I thought for sure that they would not want to include me in any of this because then you know that I’d survive.

No, but it’s 2023. Flashbacks are all the rage.

Rob: This is true.

But I’m glad that you’re here, although you do spend an awful lot of time bound and gagged.

Rob: Yes, yes. And they were very kind to keep it nice and loose, but it felt like Covid times for me. I hate wearing a mask, and it was pretty awful.

So what do you think Edward is thinking at this point, as he’s being dragged around on a chair pretty much?

Rob: I think he’s trying to figure out how to make it back home and how to get himself out of this situation. I think he owes his wife a call, and he just has not been able to… He didn’t show up where he was supposed to be. So I think there’s a level of thinking of all the responsibility he’s leaving at the door.

There also may be a level of having left the stove on possibly. Or maybe he’s running the AC really high because he shouldn’t have done that, he didn’t turn it down before he left. All the things he would do if he even just went on vacation. He didn’t get to do any of that. So he’s thinking about all that stuff.

Right, his responsibilities.

Rob: Yeah.

Walt, I was up and down about The Intern. I almost believed that he was at the police station to help John, and oh, I was so wrong. How bad is this kid?

Walt: Oh, it gets much worse. You haven’t seen anything yet, ma’am. No, it gets a lot worse.

And Enid, you are as close to acting on behalf of the audience as a character can get. How hard is it going to be for her to put the pieces of this together?

Enid: Yeah, I mean, she is pretty driven and pretty career-focused, and she’s a dog with a bone; she’s not going to let it go. But it turns out to be much bigger than even she was aware it could be.

Jo knows at the beginning that there’s something more to this, but I think it balloons out further than her imagination could imagine. I think it’s pretty tough because John Weir, her nemesis, is really tricky, and he has unbelievable skills to evade and obfuscate the truth.

And so she’s always being thrown off track or confused or led down a rabbit hole, but she’s not going to give up. So she ends up being a good match for him.

Rob: Such a good match.

Enid: Yeah, because she’s driven and obsessive, just like he is.

She is a match for him, but she already goes off-book, and I’m getting the feeling that she might identify with him in some way. How does that help her investigation?

Enid: Yeah, I think at some point in the script, someone describes him as her white whale, and it’s true. It’s like Moby Dick. She becomes a little obsessed and maybe not so in such a healthy way. And she’s also very ambitious and anxious to get her position back at the FBI.

And when someone is driven and ambitious, sometimes they cut a few corners or maybe color outside the lines. And once you start doing that, then you kind of wonder, “Well, what else will she do?” And so I think it makes for an interesting journey. You wonder how much Jo is capable of as the series goes on.

Walt, Keifer Sutherland is an icon on shows like this. What’s it like playing a bad guy to his hero?

Walt: It’s funny. It’s really weird, actually. It’s like this actor that I really respect, and I get to beat him up several times.

No, I said earlier, I called my dad, and I said like, “Yo dad, it’s this amazing thing. I’m going to beat up Keifer Sutherland,” and it feels like the beginning of something new, a new mark in my career or as an actor that I get to beat up Keifer Sutherland I guess, yeah.

As one of the bad guys, are you worried at all that your character might end up on the wrong side of a tall building or an explosion?

Walt: No, I think this character is like a cockroach. Doesn’t matter where you throw him; he will always survive and escape from the building. Yeah, he’ll always survive. I know that for a fact, they will never kill this character.

For a fact, good. Rob, this series says a lot about technology and media and what we know and what we think we know. How do you think this show speaks to the world today?

Rob: Well, there’s just so much out there now where the lies aren’t even hidden. You know somebody’s not telling the truth, and it’s just the themes that this show talks about. I think people are interested in authenticity now, after the past handful of years. Also, just personally and wanting to know the truth.

And this show is based off of this idea that what you see is not what you think. There’s this deception happening; there’s this manipulation. You’re being influenced, and you’re not even aware that you’re making decisions based off of some boardroom, like this remote boardroom that you’ve been set up.

And I think that’s what the world is right now. So I think it’s nice to side with somebody who’s trying to do something about that. And that means going outside of the lines. And then once you do that, you can’t go back, is the thing. You can’t unknow what you know. You can’t go back to sleep; I’ve tried.

Red pill, green pill.

Rob: Yeah.

Walt: Yeah.

Did that help you understand Madi, The Intern, and Edward any better?

Just like no man, no character lives

Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat Congressman from Parkland, Florida, is amping up his call for common-sense gun reform in the aftermath of Nashville’s fatal school shooting on Monday, publicly locking horns with Republican representative of Georgia Marjorie Taylor Greene and interviewing with “CNN This Morning,” exclaiming, “We have allowed schools in this country to be turned into slaughterhouses.”

Moskowitz made headlines Wednesday for getting ensnared in debate with Greene during a House Oversight Committee hearing in which he argued against her stance of arming school officials to protect against active shooters: “You guys are worried about banning books,” he said. “Dead kids can’t read.”

Sitting with “CNN This Morning” Thursday, co-host Kaitlan Collins asked Moskowitz about the viral moment. He shared that it’s “a very serious issue for me,” as he is a graduate of Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of Parkland’s horrific shooting in 2018.

“What was going through my mind is I still remember that there are members on the Oversight Committee that called Parkland a ‘false flag’ event, and so I know what I’m dealing with there,” he said. “This is a very serious issue for me because I’ve seen what it’s like when you go to your school that you graduated from and there are bullet holes through the windows, where backpacks are piled up outside, where homework is scattered through the hallway, where there’s bloodstains in front of the door because there’s someone you went to high school with passed away.”

“She has never seen that,” he continued of Greene. “A lot of these Republicans that I have served with have never seen that. They’ve never seen what it’s like to watch parents put their kid in a box, testify at their funeral, and say the only thing they did wrong was send their kid to school … We have allowed schools in this country to be turned into slaughterhouses. I knew what I was getting myself into.”

He also shared that more gun reform than just President Joe Biden’s call to ban assault weapons is possible.

“I think we need to institute the assault weapons ban, but we also can’t be afraid to do smaller things,” he said. “Everything we do is about mitigating this event and mitigating this crisis in this country. And so look, if we can go out and pass a bill that saves 100 lives, I’ll take that. If we can pass a bill that saves five lives, I’ll take it. That’s five more children that are alive, that’s five more families that are not broken. And so I’m here to work with my colleagues across the aisle. I want to ban assault weapons, but if we can’t get that done and we can talk about mental health and we can talk about hardening schools and we can talk about SROs and we can talk about single point of entry and we can talk about threat assessments, I’m willing to do all of the above because there is not one thing that’s gonna solve this problem. We have to do multiple things.”

Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat Congressman from Parkland,

It’s a common misconception among Americans today that African Americans had it the worst prior to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Really it’s the opposite. Before the Civil Rights movement, Black Americans were just Americans. They had their churches and communities and were as prosperous as they could be. Up until the Great Depression, Tulsa was Black Wall Street. As we learn in director Justin Malone’s Uncle Tom II: An American Odyssey, it took a bunch of white Marxists to derail the progress of Black America.

Chad Jackson guides us through an unflinching, if cursory, exploration of the leftist policies and movements which sought to infest Black America and prevent it from prospering. Starting with the race hustlers who sought to take advantage of the conflicts in the South, like the venerated Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Marxist activists became part of Black people’s struggle in Georgia, Alabama, and other southern states. While initially, such radicals seemed helpful to the cause, the true intent became clear in successive decades.

There is a dire contrast between Black Adults in their 60s and 70s today and the Blacks coming to adulthood now. Whereas the older generations of Black Americans come off as American capitalists, the later generations seem to believe they’re entitled to things. In most inner cities, you will see Black communities that subsist on HUD and section 8 housing, food stamps, and free mobile phones. I saw it firsthand in East Orange, NJ. There I was going about my business, and some young feller tried to convince me I needed a free Obama phone; naturally, I declined the offer.

“…it took a bunch of white Marxists to derail the progress of Black America.”

Uncle Tom II, written by Malone, Jackson, Larry Elder, and Ryder Ansell, presents wonderful interviews and speech excerpts from a host of great Black intellectuals of America. Dr. Ben Carson, Allen West, Carol Swain, Thomas Sowell, Voddie Baucham Jr., and others all contribute deep introspective thought concerning undermining the Black community in America by the likes of Saul Alinsky and other radicals. You know there’s something wrong with a man when he dedicates his book to Lucifer Morningstar, which Alinsky did with Rules for Radicals. As I have read that book, I can tell you directly, dear reader, the radicals who adhere to these directives will never be satisfied. It’s not for them to conclude the protest; there must be new protest movements cropping up all the time. That’s how they prosper.

I enjoyed the fact Malone took this as an opportunity to delve into the central crux of Marx and Engels’ philosophy. Marxism does not know how it will achieve its utopia. While all the children and young adults documented want free stuff, they have no idea how to sustain it. So movements like Black Lives Matter begin. It might have been a great idea at first, but now it’s clear this is how Patrice Cullers — who is wonderfully documented here — and others profit from the grift of the movement. Listening to her declare how she was angry, but with no idea about what is illuminating. Again, it’s never about winning. The protest is just meant to continue indefinitely.

And that is how Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter have kept Black Americans from succeeding. W. E. B. Dubois started it all off with the NAACP. His communist affinities used the advancement of people of color as a front for teaching generations of young Blacks to embrace Marxism and its destructive tenets.

Malone has directed a fine film in Uncle Tom II: An American Odyssey. While it cannot go too deep into this massive and sprawling subject, it gets to the essence of the problem. This is a must-watch slice of American History for every citizen.

It’s a common misconception among Americans today

Russia’s security service, the FSB, on Wednesday arrested Evan Gershkovich, an American Wall Street Journal reporter, on espionage charges. Gershkovich had extensively reported on Russia, including on the deterioration of the country’s economy.

Press freedom is tightly restricted in Russia, and it has become even more controlled in the last year as the government has imposed new laws intended to limit reporting on the war, including a law prohibiting reporting that contradicts the government’s narrative on the conflict. Prosecutors have opened cases against dozens of Russian journalists. However, the arrest of an accredited foreign correspondent with a major U.S. news outlet appears to be a step toward even great repression.

Many western outlets pulled some or all of their journalists out of Moscow as a result of the rising tensions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year.

Who is Evan Gershkovich?

Gershkovich, a 31-year-old U.S. citizen, is a reporter based in the Wall Street Journal’s Moscow bureau. Gershkovich had worked as a reporter in Russia since 2017, and joined the publication in January 2022, per the Journal, after reporting for the Moscow Times, Agence France-Presse, and the New York Times. In the most recent story he published, he wrote about the effects of sanctions on the Russian economy.

Gershkovich was arrested on Wednesday in Yekaterinburg, which is north of Kazakhstan, on a reporting trip, the Journal reported. Novaya Gazeta Europe reported that Gershkovich was reporting on Russian attitudes about the private military company Wagner Group.

Why was Evan Gershkovich arrested?

The FSB said in a statement that Gershkovich is “suspected of spying in the interests of the American government,” and that its investigative department has initiated an espionage criminal case against him.

“It was established that E. Gershkovich, acting on the assignment of the American side, collected information constituting a government secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex,” the statement said.

The Russian news agency TASS reported that Gershkovich pleaded not guilty at a court in Moscow.

“The Wall Street Journal vehemently denies the allegations from the FSB and seeks the immediate release of our trusted and dedicated reporter, Evan Gershkovich,” the newspaper said in a statement. “We stand in solidarity with Evan and his family.”

How is the world reacting?

The arrest was widely condemned by his fellow journalists and organizations supporting press freedom, who called for his release.

“We are deeply concerned over Russia’s widely-reported detention of a U.S. citizen journalist. We are in contact with the Wall Street Journal on this situation. Whenever a U.S. citizen is detained abroad, we immediately seek consular access, and seek to provide all appropriate support,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement. “In the strongest possible terms, we condemn the Kremlin’s continued attempts to intimidate, repress, and punish journalists and civil society voices.”

“Arresting a foreign journalist on espionage charges is a serious escalation of Russia’s attacks on journalism,” said Scott Griffen, the deputy director of the International Press Institute in a statement. “It underscores the depth of Russia’s effort to silence coverage of Putin’s war on Ukraine, which has already led to a serious crackdown on Russian journalists. Now, that dragnet appears to be expanding further.”

Pauline Ades-Mevel, a spokesperson for Reporters Without Borders, told the Journal that the group is “alarmed by what looks like retaliation against journalists.”

“Journalists must not be targeted, even if unfortunately they have been regularly since the invasion,” she said.

In 2022, the last in-person event of the IAB Newfronts was Twitter, a sort of last hurrah for advertisers on the platform before it was sold to Elon Musk.

In 2023, the newfronts will end with another evening presentation from a platform with a decidedly uncertain future: TikTok.

The advertising trade organization released its planned schedule for this year’s newfront, with a bevy of heavy hitters set to participate. The evening presentations May 1, 2 and 4 will belong to Amazon, Yahoo and TikTok, respectively. NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Meta Platforms, Snapchat, YouTube, Roku and Condé Nast are also set to host presentations.

There will also be a “main stage” May 3, where companies will deliver more rapid-fire presentations. Maria Menounos will host that day.

Most presentations will be streamed live, in addition to some people being invited to attend in person (TikTok, it’s worth noting, will not be streamed).

YouTube will be the newfronts “principal partner,” and will host a breakfast to kick off the week. YouTube will hold its annual Brandcast presentation during TV’s upfront week.

The full schedule is below:

Monday, May 1: YouTube, Vizio Ads, Amazon

Tuesday, May 2: Samsung Ads, Snap, Peacock, Roku, Yahoo

Wednesday, May 3: IAB Main Stage mini presentations

Thursda, May 4: Condé Nast, IAB Special Sessions, Meta, Vevo, TikTok

Riding the theaters-to-streaming wave is paying off in multiple ways for NBCUniversal as it dominates the latest movie rankings

They might as well pour champagne and pass out victory cigars at 30 Rock, because Peacock just had its best streaming week ever for movies. The NBCUniversal streamer’s success stemmed largely from success at the box office, giving more weight to the theaters-to-streaming trend that’s seeing cinematic exposure as key to driving viewership online.

Peacock topped Whip Media’s movie ranker for Friday through Sunday, thanks to the streaming debut of “Knock at the Cabin.” But the service also accounted for six of the top 10 most-streamed movies in the U.S. over the past weekend, according to Whip Media’s rankings, which it compiles using viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.

A candlelight vigil in Nashville Wednesday night drew hundreds to grieve the victims of the mass school shooting which claimed six lives earlier this week, with local residents Sheryl Crow and Margo Price among those offering performances as part of the public grieving.

The event was relatively brief — only about half an hour — but powerful and moving, attended by First Lady Jill Biden, a host of local and state elected officials, police officers, and clergy, along with the musicians who performed songs obviously chosen with great care for the somber occasion.

Sheryl Crow, who has spent more than 15 years as a Nashville-area resident, accompanied herself at a piano to sing “I Shall Believe,” a hymn-like track from her breakthrough album “Tuesday Night Music Club.” The crowd soaked up the hopeful balm of the spiritually tinged ballad in the wake of the shooting at Nashville’s Covenant School, the small Christian elementary academy where three children and three adults were killed by a 28-year-old assailant carrying two assault weapons and a pistol.

“Come to me now, and lay your hands on me,” sang Crow. “Say it will be all right, and I shall believe.” She tagged the end of the song with a chorus of Dionne Warwick’s “What the World Needs Now (is Love, Sweet Love).”

Singer-songwriter Margo Price stood alone at a microphone and ripped into an a cappella version of Bob Dylan’s rebellious “Tears of Rage,” recorded by the Band in 1967. “Tears of rage, tears of grief,” she sang. “We’re so alone, and life is brief.”

Ketch Secor, the multi-instrumentalist co-founding member of the award-winning Old Crowe Medicine Show band, strapped on a banjo to sing the Carter Family standard “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” accompanied by his young son on harmonica.

He later closed the show with Price, singing “Amazing Grace” and “I’ll Fly Away” as six silver balloons, representing the Covenant victims, were released to make their way silently into the twilight, catching the last golden rays of the setting sun, and a gentle breeze, before disappearing over the downtown skyline.

As I walked through the crowd before the event, watching staffers from the Nashville mayor’s office pass out candles from baskets and bins, I spoke with several attendees, almost all of whom were hopeful for more love, fewer guns, and something uplifting to believe as Music City reckons with a new designation — the latest city now on the grim list of first-name places — including Uvalde (Texas), Newtown (Connecticut) and Parkland (Florida) — marred by the tragedy of a mass school shooting.

To date, some 175 people have died at such incidents across America at schools and colleges, according to the Associated Press.

Police shot and killed the shooter, a former student, minutes after they arrived on the scene.

“It seems so surreal that it could happen here,” said Nashville resident Caroline Vaughn, 28. “But it could happen anywhere. Getting together and mourning together is important—a little bit of collective grief and catharsis.”

The need for grieving was palpable as a crowd hungry for signs of stillness, safety, calm and reassurance huddled together at Nashville’s Public Square Park, on the grounds ringed by crews of national media in front of the city’s Metropolitan Courthouse. The imposing government building was a symbolic backdrop for the hopes expressed by many that Tennessee’s Republican-dominated legislature — widely regarded as lax on gun regulation, registration and background checks — would enact stricter gun laws.

Guns are a deeply entrenched political issue, and the Covenant shootings made that sore subject even more raw in Music City, where concerned citizens have renewed their calls for more action. But the vigil offered an opportunity to close the political divide, and perhaps ease the tension, in a few sacred moments of memorial for lives lost and suffering friends and family members, no matter what political colors anyone flies.

“Grief is not partisan,” noted Caroline Vaughn with a sigh. “But action is.”

Jill Biden didn’t speak at the event, but instead stood silently and solemnly watching the proceedings, while her husband, President Joe Biden, remained back in D.C., calling on Congress to ban assault weapons in response to the Covenant shootings.

Lorianne Solms, lighting a candle for her 11-year-old daughter, Rhett, certainly knows about the brevity of life and the rising tide of danger for children. She’s a pediatric nurse at a free clinic in East Nashville. “I’m so sick of this happening,” she told me. “This feels very close to home. Guns are the number-one cause of death in kids. This is crazy. I vote, and I do things, but it’s just not enough. It’s so easy to get an assault rifle; it’s insane. I feel very vulnerable.”

Her daughter, a fifth grader, was also shaken. “I’m a little bit more nervous to go to school now,” Rhett said. “I’m confused about what might happen next.”

Victoria, 37, a mother there with her own two young children, told me she came “to support the families,” she said, noting that when children are involved, we’re all connected. “Even though they’re not my kids, they’re still our babies.”

Margo Price, an outspoken advocate for gun safety, had earlier posted an emotional plea on Instagram for voters to oust legislators who support permit-less carry, who take millions in contributions from the NRA, and who want to lower the age of gun ownership from 21 to 18. “Let’s help end this nightmare,” she wrote. “Children shouldn’t have to go to school and fear for their lives.”

The Covenant School children who died (Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney and Hallie Scruggs) were all nine years old. The adult victims were the head administrator of the school (Katherine Koonce), a substitute teacher (Cynthia Peak) and the longtime janitor (Mike Hill), whose family members were in attendance, alongside other dignitaries on stage.

The crowd bowed their heads for an opening prayer with pastor Clay Stauffer, whose church—Woodmont Christian—held its own vigils after the shooting at Covenant, its Nashville neighbor in the leafy suburb of Green Hills. “This is a strong city,” Stauffer told the crowd. “Tonight is a time to come together, to mourn, to grieve, to cry, to remind ourselves that we will get through this.”

In his brief address at the podium, Nashville Mayor John Cooper thanked President Biden for ordering flags lowered to half-mast after the shooting, called off the first names of the victims—an encouragement to remember them as real people, not gloomy statistics—and praised the actions of first responders. He also urged Nashvillians to lean on each other in this time of great trauma. “Just two days ago was our city’s worst day,” he said. “When words can’t carry the weight of what is in our hearts, we must reach out to each other, to help each other carry the load.”

Many others also praised the decisive effectiveness of Nashville’s Metro Police Department, which responded to the 911 call, dispatched officers to Covenant School, entered and applied deadly force to eliminate the threat — all within less than 15 minutes. Their textbook response is credited with preventing even more casualties.

“They’re heroes in our eyes,” said Joe Miller, who was at the vigil with his wife, April. “They saved many lives.”

A candlelight vigil in Nashville Wednesday night

If “Murder Mystery” was one wild adventure, the sequel kicks it up a notch for a wilder and more action-packed getaway. And that’s exactly what lead actors Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler were hoping to do with the Netflix sequel “Murder Mystery 2,” which premieres Friday.

Sandler and Aniston return as crime-solving duo Nick and Audrey Spitz, who are now full-time detectives after they solved their first murder mystery four years ago. They’re struggling to get their agency off the ground when they’re invited to celebrate the wedding of their friend the Maharaja (Adeel Akhtar) on his private island.

But when he is kidnapped, Nick and Audrey put their skills to the test and are embroiled in a bigger, bolder whodunit that takes them to Paris.

Directed by Jeremy Garelick, the film also stars Mark Strong, Mélanie Laurent, Jodie Turner-Smith, Enrique Arce, Kuhoo Verma, John Kani and Dany Boon.

Sandler, 56, and Aniston, 54, have solid chemistry and comic timing, but those are not the only reasons their pairing works.

“We have so much fun,” Aniston said in a joint virtual interview.

“Jennifer has a few friends that come on the trip. I have a few friends. We all work together,” Sandler added. “Everybody gets along. So when we hang out it goes late. It’s fun. There are olives involved,” he laughed.

“Always olives. It’s like a travelling circus in the best way,” said Aniston.

They completed each other’s sentences and shared knowing glances before bursting out in laughter. Such is the foundation of a friendship that spans more than 30 years.

The Los Angeles-born Aniston is aware of how special their bond is: “We’re grateful for it and cherish it with all of our hearts. We make each other laugh.”

“She is as funny as it gets,” raved the New York-born Sandler. “Also, we have a lot of good times outside of making movies. And when I’m at Jennifer’s house, I know I’m going to be laughing, I’m going to be eating well. Hanging out with dogs, a lot of nice friends.”

Despite their decades of friendship, this is only the third film they have done together. They previously worked on the hit flick “Just Go With It” in 2011 followed by “Murder Mystery” in 2019.

Sandler, who described Aniston as a “smart cookie,” said he was surprised by the energy the actor brings to every project. “Also, strong thinking and always, always on top of everything.”

Does anything about Sandler surprise her? “Nothing anymore,” Aniston laughed. “It’s all old news … I can’t believe how you bring your dogs everywhere. I think that’s incredible … I started crying when I FaceTimed my dogs.”

For her part, Jodie Turner-Smith was caught off guard by Aniston and Sandler, having worked with them for the first time on this film.

“I was surprised at how down to earth and cool and fun they are. I didn’t necessarily see that coming,” Turner-Smith said. “I think a lot of times when you see actors that have been doing it for a long time, and that have been doing it at a certain level for a long time, there’s a certain level of separation from them and the rest of us. And with those two, it wasn’t like that at all. I mean, they were just so cool, wonderful and amazing. I just felt so welcomed.”

Audiences will see Turner-Smith in a new light as she flexes her comedic muscles in this. She’s known for the crime drama “Queen & Slim,” for playing the lead role in miniseries “Anne Boleyn” and a role in the postapocalyptic series “The Last Ship.”

“Comedy is, in many ways, so much harder than drama just because a lot of it is having an instinct for it that you can’t really teach,” Turner-Smith said. “I wanted to exercise this muscle and then I got to do it.”

The British actor now has “so much more respect” for Aniston and Sandler after seeing them deliver in person.

“Not that I didn’t obviously have tons of respect for them before. I was a huge fan of theirs, so half the time I’m pinching myself that they wanted me to be there and were enjoying me being there. But … I’m just like, ‘Wow, you guys are actually kind of genius and you’re coming up with this stuff’ … and all of it feels so grounded and real and hilarious. It’s not easy to be hilarious..”

Another actor who makes his presence felt is Enrique Arce, known for his role in the Spanish breakout series “Money Heist.” In the film, he plays a womanizer and is the “most outrageous comedic relief in the movie,” he said.

He called the experience “one of the most incredible experiences, if not the most incredible experience as an actor in my life.”

He was overwhelmed by the chance to work with Aniston and Sandler. “I’m just a dude from Valencia, Spain. How did this happen?”

While the film continues to be inspired by Agatha Christie, the whodunnit is infused with more action this time around but maintains the integrity of a murder mystery.

When asked who is better at solving mysteries, Sandler said it’s Aniston.

“I can’t pay attention. But Jennifer’s sharp, she knows what’s going on. She reads things, she knows people, she’s very aware.”

Aniston returned the compliment, telling him, “You’re really good at taking advice in terms of when I tell you about a new thing to try. I always want to keep him healthy for Jackie, for Sadie and Sunny (his wife and daughters), it’s important.”

“She’s always looking out for me,” Sandler said.

“Murder Mystery 2” is on Netflix Friday, March 31.
