When producers asked Rhys what he would change about the iconic spy character, he was stumped.

For a handsome British actor of a certain age, auditioning to play James Bond is a rite of passage. Another rite of passage: telling one of the countless tales about how he narrowly missed out on the part.

The latest actor to regale fans with an embarrassing story about pursuing the role is Matthew Rhys. In an interview with The Times of London, the Emmy-winning star of “The Americans” recalled being asked to audition for the part that eventually went to Daniel Craig in “Casino Royale.”

Rhys called the experience “very intimidating” and explained that after he read, producers in the room asked him what he would change about the character of James Bond.

“I just remember going, ‘Ah.’ I was so not anticipating that question,” Rhys said. “And then I was like, is it a trick question? Are they waiting for people to go, ‘I wouldn’t do anything. He’s perfect?’”

Rhys said that his transparently honest answer would have been: “Oh, it’s been a bit one-note for a few decades, hasn’t it? I think we can drop the misogynistic jokes.” But rather than say that, he tried to defuse the situation with jokes that nobody laughed at. “I’d give him a limp. I said, ‘Limp?’ Nothing. ‘Eye patch?’ Nothing,” he said.

The actor joked that he envisioned Daniel Craig’s answer to the question being considerably more succinct: “Gritty reboot? Job done.”

Rhys’ story could be a cautionary tale for any actors who might consider telling jokes during the upcoming casting process for the next James Bond movie. Craig parted ways with the franchise after “No Time to Die,” which put the coveted role up for grabs for the first time in two decades. Fans have already begun to link actors such as Regé-Jean Page, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Tom Hardy to the role, though producers are in no rush to find an actor. The next Bond movie is not expected to hit theaters for at least two years.

Gayle King and Charles Barkley made the official announcement Saturday of a new weekly primetime series for CNN: King Charles.

The live show is set to debut this fall and run through 2024, and is a central feature of CNN boss Chris Licht’s efforts to revive the network’s primetime schedule. Its 9 p.m. ET hour has lacked a permanent host since Chris Cuomo was fired in December 2021.

King and Barkley, though, will fill one night of the week, Wednesday.

Licht has been taking a different approach to programming the 9 p.m. ET slot, with a mix of shows and formats rather than giving one personality a five-nights-a-week gig. The network has been trying a mixture of live events, like town halls and one-on-one interviews including Jake Tapper’s sit-down with Bill Maher, in the slot.

King and Barkley made the announcement on TNT’s NBA playoffs pregame coverage.

“What I think is so great for the both of us is that it’s live TV,” King said. “To me, live TV is like working without a net. So whatever happens, happens. I like that.”

She said that she “wasn’t looking for another job,” as she remains under contract for CBS Mornings, and Barkley will continue on WBD Sports.

Barkley said that he also didn’t “want to be on TV more” but agreed to it when offered the opportunity to team with King.

King Charles is being billed as a discussion show. In a memo to staffers, Licht wrote that the show will be “an exciting news way we are delivering culturally relevant programming and unique perspectives to our audience, from two incredibly dynamic personalities.”

King said that they will talk about politics on the show, but Barkley added, “but we don’t want to say we are a liberal, conservative, Republican, Democrat. That is one of the things that has already ruined television in general. She is going to be a straight shooter, and you know I am going to be a straight shooter.”

He added: “All I want is people, even if I disagree with them, to be honest with me. I don’t want them saying things to get clickbait. That is one of the things that is what drives me crazy about people in our profession right now.”

Said King: “Everyone I know has an opinion about something. I just think we have to figure out a way to have a good conversation without tearing each other down, I think we can do that.”

As an example, Barkley suggested that a wave of gun shootings this week would be a topic for the show if it were on the air now. “The image that people have of us around the world is not so good,” King said. “I know friends who are thinking about leaving America because their children are about to go to school.”

She also brought up the possibility of lighter subjects like food and pop culture.

“I want people to tune in to see, ‘What are Charles and Gayle going to do?’” King said, adding that “it will be fun to watch the dynamic between the two of us.”

Here is Licht’s full memo to staffers:

To my CNN Colleagues,

I am thrilled to share that CNN will be home to a new show featuring the extraordinary duo of Gayle King and Charles Barkley, aptly titled King Charles, which will air weekly in primetime beginning this fall and running into 2024. This show will be an exciting new way we are delivering culturally relevant programming and unique perspectives to our audience, from two incredibly dynamic personalities. We are excited that they are both able to join us in addition to their current respective roles with Gayle continuing to anchor CBS Mornings. King Charles exemplifies the one-team, one-company mentality with Charles playing double duty at CNN and in his role at WBD Sports.

There will be more to come on this in the months ahead, but in the meantime, please join me in welcoming Gayle and Charles to CNN.

The timeline of events surrounding Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes’ alleged affair has been intriguing to watch and, as of late, there haven’t been too many major developments. In recent weeks, sources have mostly been sharing alleged details about the former Good Morning America anchors’ continued job search. The two have allegedly been facing a somewhat rough climate in the TV business, as they seek to land new gigs. Insiders even claimed that big networks have already passed on Holmes and Robach. Now, it sounds like a major show also turned them down.

Per recent reports, the two journalists have been pitching themselves for a plethora of productions in the aftermath of the GMA drama but to no avail. A person close to the situation now tells OK Magazine that the two can now cross Dancing with the Stars off their list of reported professional prospects. Said person made this claim while dropping purported info on how the pair initially believed their job hunt would pan out:

These two had totally convinced themselves they were the new Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and job offers would come flooding in. … Not even DWTS wants them in their ballroom.

Gayle King and Charles Barkley are teaming up this fall to host a new CNN prime show named after themselves, “King Charles,” the duo announcement on TNT on Saturday.

“King Charles,” will air on Wednesdays starting this fall and will continue through 2024.

“What I think is so great for the both of us is, it’s live T.V.,” King said in the on-air announcement. “To me, live T.V. is like working without a net. So, whatever happens, happens.”

Barkley added, “I want it to be nonpolitical… but we don’t want to say we’re a Liberal, Conservative, Republican, Democrat; that’s one of the things that’s already ruined television in general.”

King and Barkley explained during their live announcement that neither one of them were looking for additional jobs. However, Barkley admitted that when conversations first started about a possible new show, he only took the job so he could work with King.

“They said, ‘What about Gayle?’” Barkley recalled. “I said, ‘Gayle who?’ And they said, ‘Gayle King,’ and I said, ‘Oh, I’ll work with Gayle. That’s the only way.’”

Barkley said he immediately called King to talk about the show. King agreed she only wanted to work with Barkley, and that’s how “King Charles,” became a new primetime show for the network.

Ben Mullin of the New York Times, posted an internal statement from CNN CEO Chris Licht confirming the new show.

“This show will be an exciting new way we are delivering culturally relevant programming and unique perspectives to our audience from two incredibly dynamic personalities,” Licht said.

Both King and Barkley said they aren’t leaving their main jobs, hers being at CBS and his being on TNT.

With a film like Dry Ground Burning, filmmakers Joana Pimenta and Adirley Queirós place a lot of trust in their audience. This film comes out of Harvard’s Sensory Ethnography Lab and isn’t dissimilar to films like Leviathan (2012). The distinctive aesthetic quality of these films is bound (and perhaps designed) to challenge viewers as the takes can be very long, and the action takes a long time to develop in many sequences. It’s definitely not for everyone, as it goes far beyond entertainment and serves as more of an ethnographic exercise. It’s observational cinema that has a foot in both documentary and narrative filmmaking.

Those who have seen the Brazilian film Bacurau from 2019 will recognize some similarities in Dry Ground Burning. Both feature a diverse cast of characters in a poor, arid community under threat from various segments of Brazilian society, including intensely nationalistic external forces. The majority of the film follows Léa, a tough and resourceful woman recently released from prison, as she assists her half-sister Chitara in illicitly selling oil to a motorcycle gang. Chitara is also campaigning to form a political party consisting of ex-cons in the hope of a better quality of life. All this is in the wake of Jair Bolsonaro’s shocking 2018 election.

“…illicitly selling oil to a motorcycle gang…seamless blend of documentary and fiction…”

We’re taken on a slow and meditative journey through the existence of the two sisters, and this includes extended sequences of refining oil, a church service, twerking on a bus, and a lot of Léa and Chitara chewing the fat while chain-smoking. The hypnotic quality of many of these sequences is fascinating, but I assuredly won’t be alone in positing that many are simply too long. The languid pacing would be challenging enough in shorter features. Still, with a bloated length of 153 minutes or so, even the most patient viewers will question the wisdom of dragged-out scenes featuring tertiary characters piling bricks or tossing lumber.

If one manages to push through, the reward is a seamless blend of documentary and fiction. All the characters are non-professional actors, and this intentional blurring of reality is unique in cinema. The sisters at the center of the film are fascinating, maintaining an edge that a professional actor simply couldn’t provide. One gets the sense that for much of the film, they aren’t really being directed; instead, they’re just living through their reality in front of the camera while still following a script. A shocking scene towards the end of the film brings us squarely into the world of documentary, but its poignancy makes it essential.

I want to recommend this to everyone, but the pragmatist in me tells me that many won’t have the patience, and Dry Ground Burning definitely requires it. There’s nothing quite like it, though, and fans of the Sensory Ethnography Lab should jump right into this mesmerizing journey through a Brazil we rarely see on camera. It’s a challenge that may ultimately be gratifying for the right audience — just make sure you have a comfy chair.

The Ford government has confirmed plans to build the first new provincial park Ontario has seen in 40 years.

The province said it would be creating an “urban provincial park” in Uxbridge, Ont., a town in Durham Region, located to the northwest of Toronto.

Ontario’s minister of the environment, conservation and parks, David Piccini, said the announcement — which was teased in the latest budget document — was timed to coincide with Earth Day.

“Creating the province’s first urban provincial park in Uxbridge would be a major step forward for conservation and biodiversity protection in Ontario,” Piccini said.

“We look forward to working with the public and local stakeholders to make this vision a reality for residents and visitors to get out and enjoy nature near this rapidly growing region.”

According to Ontario, there were 12 million visits to provincial parks in 2022.

The park will be located in Oak Ridges Moraine and, according to officials, will be designed to incorporate hiking and birdwatching.

Dave Barton, Mayor of Uxbridge, welcomed the news, saying the area was “near major urban centres in the GTA and perfect for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.”

The province’s 2023 budget made reference to exploration work taking place in Uxbridge for new protected land but did not confirm plans to build a new provincial park in the town.

The Ford government said the park could include 532 hectares of provincially-owned land, including the 598-hectare Durham Regional Forest, owned by the local municipal government. That area is a mixed wood and conifer forest.

“Over the coming months, the government will be conducting site assessments and evaluations to measure the feasibility of creating an urban provincial park in Uxbridge,” the province said in a statement Saturday.

Davina Pardo and Leah Wolchok’s documentary film “Judy Blume Forever” captures the popular author’s understanding of children by including her archive of letters she exchanged with fans who were growing up at the time she began writing her books.

The film, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and arrives on Amazon Prime Video, unfolds Blume’s path to writing in a similar coming-of-age format to match the genre for which she is most well-known. Access to Yale’s collection of all the letters Blume wrote to and received from fans allowed the true connection Blume had with children to shine.

“With that collection, we understood that we had something really special and that would be very different from just your average, typical biography-type documentary,” producer Sara Bernstein told TheWrap. “The project was really about her impact on her readers over the years.”

The documentary immediately plunges viewers into an experience similar to that of discovering Blume’s books — with Blume reading an excerpt about masturbation from “Deenie.”

“We had some different versions of the opening and many different versions that we tried, and this is the one that felt the most honest, the funniest, it gets you right into her head, gets you her trailblazing honesty,” co-director Leah Wolcok told TheWrap. “It makes you a little uncomfortable, and I think that was important to put people on notice, like, ‘Oh, okay. All right. We’re going there and just let’s relax and go there for the rest of the film.”

According to co-director Pardo, the start of the documentary establishes Blume’s writing voice and personality simultaneously, hinting at how she became a successful author. Pardo corresponded with Blume for a year and a half before getting the author’s blessing to make the film. The filmmakers aimed to mirror the curiosity around coming of age that children have.

“Because Judy had so many coming of age moments throughout her life, it was always going to cover childhood, adolescence and adulthood in Judy’s life, but also the story of her books,” Pardo said. “We’re really focused on the intersections of her life and the books. There are so many moments in the books that even though they’re not necessarily autobiographical, they come from really specific, intimate moments in her life. We’re really interested in sort of an interplay of those coming of age stories, and the coming of age of for readers, which is sort of also happening at the same time in the film.”

Actresses and creators Molly Ringwald, Anna Konkle, Lena Dunham and more also commented on Blume’s strides that encouraged them to portray female adolescence in their respective works like the John Hughes films, “PEN15” and “Girls.”

“We [also] wanted to talk to women who had really revolutionized the way that female protagonists are seen in American popular culture. They were all Judy Blume readers,” Pardo said. “We wanted to interview them all in the same setting with that abstract vintage wallpaper, quirky prop living room setting that was inspired by the original paperback covers of Judy’s books, and we wanted to treat them all the same.’

Pardo and Wolcok interviewed other published authors, many of whom made their own strides in the battle for diverse young adult books, like Mary H.K. Choi, Tayari Jones, Jason Reynolds and more, about Blume’s work and its influence on their childhood and adolescence. These authors also discussed book bans, which became relevant near the film’s release, just as they were in the ’80s. The documentary precedes the long-awaited film adaptation of “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret?” starring Abby Ryder Forston, Rachel McAdams, Benny Safdie and Kathy Bates.

“We talked to her a lot about how her books are never neatly tied up. Margaret’s left wondering because that’s we’re all left wondering so much of the time,” Pardo said. “It’s so typical for kids. It’s not like the last chapter appears and you figure your life out. She never wanted stories and perfectly she wanted to be true to life and true to her own experience.”

Blume’s activism for the content of her books to remain readable in the 80s remains important today with regulators trying to dictate what young children can and cannot read. Margaret’s questioning of religion and the existence of God plays into the same fear around banning books today.

“She [questioned God] at a time when people did not think 11-year-olds could do that. Everyone thought 11 and 12-year-olds should be doing and thinking exactly what their parents wanted them to do and think and not question for themselves,” Wolcok said. “But that is the power of Judy’s work. She gave the power to the kids themselves. She saw how important it is to honor and respect a kid’s experience the child’s experience with questioning and wondering.”

Australian comedian and entertainer Barry Humphries, best known for his character Dame Edna Everage, died April 22. He was 89.

Humphries passed in a Sydney hospital following complications with hip surgery, his family announced in a statement.

“He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,” the family said. “With over 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer to his core, touring up until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never be.”

Humphries reportedly fell in February and had a hip replacement. In March, the entertainer had hip surgery, but earlier this week, he returned to the hospital due to complications and later died, according to Sydney Morning Herald.

Humphries was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1934, and less than 20 years later, he created the character of Edna Everage in 1955, as a social satire. In the ’70s, the character became a huge hit when Humphries brought his talents to London.

From then on, in the ’80s and ’90s, Humphries appeared on talk shows, specials and in films, as Dame Edna and his other alter-egos Les Patterson and Sandy Stone, including the British comedy show, “The Dame Edna Experience,” in 1987.

Humphries’ success spilled into the United States as well. In 2000, he won a Special Tony Award for his Broadway show “Dame Edna, The Royal Tour,” and he appeared as Edna in “Ally McBeal” in 2001.

Humphries is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lizzie Spender, his children and 10 grandchildren.

Shannen Doherty and Kurt Iswarienko are going their separate ways after 11 years of marriage.

TMZ reported that the 52-year-old actress filed for divorce from her estranged husband in Los Angeles on Friday – and it does not sound like the split was amicable at all! Her rep, Leslie Sloane, confirmed the breakup to the outlet, saying in an eyebrow-raising statement:

“Divorce is the last thing Shannen wanted. Unfortunately, she felt she was left with no other option. You can contact Kurt’s agent, Collier Grimm at PICTUREKID as she is intimately involved.”

Related: Drake Bell Claims He Learned About Wife’s Divorce Filing Online!

Hmm…

Does anyone else think the rep is trying to insinuate that Kurt might have allegedly cheated on Shannen with his agent?!! If that is true, it is no wonder why things are tense between the exes behind the scenes! According to court documents obtained by the outlet, Shannen listed January 2023 as the initial date of separation. She also asked for spousal support and none to be awarded to Kurt. An insider close to the former couple also said that the Charmed alum is “not well” when it comes to her health, making their “acrimonious” split even more difficult right now.

For those who don’t know, Shannen tied the knot with Kurt in 2011. During the pair’s marriage, the Girls Just Want to Have Fun star had been battling breast cancer. She was first diagnosed with it in February 2015, and subsequently underwent several rounds of chemotherapy and had a mastectomy. While Shannen announced her remission two years later, her breast cancer, unfortunately, came back as Stage 4 in 2020.

It’s heartbreaking that not only is she dealing with her health struggles but not having to go through what sounds like a nasty divorce. So, so awful. Hours before the divorce news broke, the Beverly Hills, 90210 star took to Instagram to share a cryptic message that read:

“The only people who deserve to be in your life are the ones who treat you with love, kindness and total respect.”

Her post received a ton of support from fans and friends, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, who wrote:

“I guess you will be in my life forever then”

Hopefully, Shannen has a solid support system throughout this difficult divorce from Kurt! Reactions, Perezcious readers? Are you shocked by the breakup news? Let us know your thoughts on the situation in the comments below.

A new MCU rumor claimed that Secret Invasion‘s format would rival WandaVision in terms of leaving fans hanging with questions and theories.

Marvel Studios previously described Secret Invasion as a “crossover event series,” indicating that it will be a star-studded affair. Moreover, Disney+ also confirmed its intriguing genre with it labeled as “Spy/Espionage.”

Given that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury (the man who Tony Stark described as an agent whose secrets have secrets) is at the forefront, the show’s genre isn’t surprising.

However, the Skrulls’ inclusion in the series will look to take its mystery elements to the next level.

New Secret Invasion Rumor Has a WandaVision Connection

Marvel

As per The Cosmic Circus, Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion is rumored to be the first MCU Disney+ show that will rival WandaVision when it comes to the tone of its twists and turns, meaning that it will leave fans with many questions while also reigniting speculation online.

The Cosmic Circus noted that Secret Invasion “brings back the incredible spy-thriller vibes” akin to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with each episode “leaves more twists and turns than ever, leaving fans with more questions than answers.”

While Loki Season 1 and Moon Knight did almost reach this level in some regard, the fan speculation surrounding WandaVision‘s twist and premise was massive during its Disney+ run, leading to a good chunk of trending topics on Twitter.

In an interview during last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Secret Invasion star Cobie Smulders talked about the show’s tone and premise, hinting at potential betrayal from the Skrulls:

“When we think about the world that they’re in, the Skrulls have been around since we saw them in ‘Captain Marvel.’ They’ve been building in numbers. And are they good? Are they bad? We’re gonna find out in the show. But there’s certainly a lot of them and so it sort of turns into this, ‘Can I trust you? Can I not trust you?’ And it’s really cool. It’s certainly fraught with a lot of tension.”

Speaking with TV Line, via Comicbook, Smulders shared that she is excited about Secret Invasion‘s “very different tone,” teasing that it sets up Nick Fury in a “really interesting way” that she always wanted to see:

“I’m really excited about it and it’s a very different tone that I have seen, especially like having Sam in anything is just a thrill to watch but I think it really like just sets his character up in a really interesting way that I’ve always wanted to see, so I was really excited about that.”

Furthermore, the Secret Invasion star also teased that the way the show “portrayed the twists and turns that they take people” will be worth it and exciting:

“It’s a really fascinating concept and I think that the way they’re portrayed and the twists and turns that they take people on is going to be really worth it and really exciting.”

Why Secret Invasion Could Elevate MCU’s Disney+ Shows

Amid the MCU delays and struggles in Phase 5, this new rumor about Secret Invasion could be what Marvel would need in order to get over the hump.

Given that WandaVision received widespread acclaim because of the fodder it gave fans to ponder weekly (on top of Wanda Maximoff’s popularity), Secret Invasion has the potential to rival the Elizabeth Olsen-led series due to its crossover nature and its unexpected twists and turns.

From predicting which MCU character will show up in the next installment to fan theories on which hero or villain is disguised as a Skrull, the possibilities are endless.

It also helps that Secret Invasion‘s episodes will release weekly similar to WandaVision as it would give fans and critics time to analyze and rewatch installments in order to craft engaging theories that would elevate the MCU in trending topics online.

Secret Invasion being compared to the tone of Captain America: The Winter Soldier could hint that the twists will be as impactful as the Hydra reveal during the MCU sequel, mainly because it took the franchise to a dark place like never before.

Secret Invasion is confirmed to release on Disney+ on June 21.

Wednesday‘s Jenna Ortega becoming Teen Titans’ Raven is DC live-action casting magic, thanks to new stunning fan art. The fan casting could become a reality as DC prepares to reboot the DCEU with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. With the new universe, many beloved DC characters that did not get their time to shine in the DCEU, such as the Green Lanterns or the Bat-family, will finally get their due. Gunn’s announcement of the lesser-known superhero team The Authority getting a movie is a good thing for the possibility of a more popular team like the Teen Titans being adapted, and, with it, Raven.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

On Twitter, digital artist Jaxson Derr imagined what Ortega could look like as Raven in the DC Universe, and the result is pitch-perfect.

Ortega has become one of Hollywood’s most popular young stars, with her role helping Netflix’s Wednesday become the second most watched English-language series in the streamer’s history, only behind the groundbreaking Stranger Things season 4. With Ortega’s popularity at an all-time high, it would be smart for DC to scoop her up to lead one of its projects, and Raven would be the perfect character for the actress.

Why Jenna Ortega As Raven Would Be Perfect For The Teen Titans & The DC Universe

Ortega’s breakout role as Wednesday Addams has made her a household name. The new DC Universe will need to be fresh to shed the image of the controversial DCEU in hopes of avoiding the poor performance of projects such as what recently happened with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which heavily underperformed at the box office. DC needs to build interest in its universe again, and the casting of an actress like Ortega, who is universally beloved and young enough to play an important character for a decade, would be a great step.

Wednesday features Ortega as its title character, a girl who had a cold attitude toward other people for most of her life but started opening up to a select few while maintaining her dark tastes. The character also deals with a power she does not completely understand. Funny enough, Wednesday’s psychic powers label her as a “raven,” based on her darker views, which appears to be a sign to the potential Ortega could have as DC’s Raven. The DC character and Wednesday share some similarities with the two characters’ dark personas and closed-off emotional nature making it easy for Ortega to seamlessly jump into the DC Universe.

As a popular young talent, Ortega would bring a massive fan following to Gunn’s new DC Universe. While the franchise will undoubtedly want to stand on its own two feet, a few established actors and directors that can help boost initial interest certainly can’t hurt. Raven is one of the most famous members of DC’s Teen Titans, and nailing her casting would be a huge step toward bringing the team to live-action on the big screen.

The runtime for Martin Scorsese’s newest movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, has just been announced, and it’s a doozy.

According to Deadline, the film clocks in at 3 hours and 26 minutes. That runtime is enough to make it Scorsese’s second-longest film ever, trailing only behind The Irishman. That movie, which was released on Netflix in 2019, is 3 hours and 29 minutes — only three minutes longer than Killers of the Flower Moon.

Killers of the Flower Moon is Scorsese’s longly-anticipated adaptation of David Grann’s book of the same name. Based on real events, the film follows the serial murders of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma. The brutual crimes came to be known as the Reign of Terror, resulting in the formation of the FBI. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro headline the film’s cast, which also includes Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion and Tantoo Cardinal.

The film will be Scorsese’s first movie since The Irishman, which received mixed reviews upon release. The film brought in 10 nominations at the Oscars, but it ended up going home from the Academy Awards empty handed. That year, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite ended up dominating the awards.

Nevertheless, Scorsese is well-known as one of America’s foremost directors. From Raging Bull to Goodfellas to Taxi Driver, Scorsese has been behind some of the greatest films ever made. He’s no stranger to long runtimes, too; The Wolf of Wall Street clocks in at 3 hours, Casino runs at 2 hours and 58 minutes, and The Aviator is 2 hours and 49 minutes long. Viewers can trust Scorsese’s directorial prowess, and the content of Grann’s book has plenty of true crime to justify the runtime. But still, you might want to make sure you use the bathroom before entering the theater.

Killers of the Flower Moon, an Apple Original Film, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France next month, but everyday viewers won’t be able to see the film until much later. It will open theatrically in October and later move to Apple TV+ just in time for peak awards season.

Editors note: This review was originally published September 4, 2022 after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The film opens today in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Blended families, where children alternate between parents and spend their lives with an assortment of half-siblings or kids from their parents’ previous relationships, are now so normal that it’s easy to overlook how painful the blending process can be. Bitter separations, disrupted households, new beds and new people appearing in them, the resentments children feel for the grown-ups’ failures and the interloping new partners pawing at the mom or dad who is rightfully theirs: none of this is easy, even in splits later described smoothly as “amicable.”

Rebecca Zlotowski’s Venice Film Festival competition entry Other People’s Children (Les Enfants des Autres) wades into those murky waters with clear-eyed empathy, recognizing the cumulative power of small hurts. It starts with a new love affair. Virginie Efira plays Rachel, a dedicated high-school teacher in a district that clearly has its fair share of truants and troubled homes. Roschdy Zem is Ali, an industrial designer she meets in her evening class learning guitar. They are middle-aged but flirt like teenagers, spend nights together and soon enough are making impassioned declarations of love. Meanwhile, Rachel has yet to meet the sometime resident of the room in Ali’s flat marked in big, colorful letters: Leila, his daughter.

When they do meet, they take to each other immediately. Efira is best known outside France as the naughty nun in Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta, actorly baggage that she inevitably brings to the protracted sex scenes in this film, but she also has a sunny, maternal warmth as Rachel that lights up the screen. She throws herself into family life, telling Leila stories and ferrying her to judo classes; she suddenly longs for pregnancy; she is agonized when Leila, tired to the point of tantrum, demands why she is always there and tells her father she wants Rachel to go away. That hurts, but Ali waves away her sense of rejection. She’s five, he says briskly. That’s what children say. And it isn’t long before Leila draws a picture of her family that includes mom, dad and Rachel too. That is a great gift.

Zlotowski builds this picture of a family shaking down into a new order very gradually, folding in other ingredients of Rachel’s life that give it a spectrum of emotional colors. Her sister, who doesn’t have a partner, discovers she is pregnant. That is a bittersweet thrill for Rachel, who fears she is menopausal. Their own mother died when Rachel was 9, but with their father they are a close, noisy little clan, full of shared jokes and mutual mockery.

Time is marked out in the film by celebrations of Jewish New Year, the family gathering outside the synagogue with her father and sister to sing the seasonal hymn. The fact that Ali has an Arabic background is never mentioned, but it is certainly noticeable. Death, family, loss, the pull of tradition, the contrary pull of passion: Zlotowski achieves a complex blend of her own devising.

Until the point where she undermines her own project with a dramatic reversal that seems simply unbelievable. The whole film has been devoted with great seriousness to showing a family making and remaking itself in a way that has barely been explored in cinema, particularly in a glossy arthouse vehicle like this one. One step forward, two steps back and a shuffle: it isn’t easy, but they will manage. This is the story she has been telling, only to veer away in another direction.

Perhaps you will see it coming – the backward steps could be read as signals – but it makes no sense except as an injection of dramatic conflict into a story that needed no amplification. Of course, it may ring true to you, but the disappointment isn’t just that I didn’t buy it. It is that it diminishes what she has already achieved, turning her account of the building of a family, which may or may not succeed but which is its own story, into something much more conventional — Other People’s Children is a film that matters, full of fine performances. It just takes a wrong turn, that’s all.

Mifepristone, a leading abortion drug, will stay legal for now, the Supreme Court ruled Friday, as an appeal moves forward on the case that could have wide-reaching implications for reproductive rights and the power of the Food and Drug Administration. The court halted a decision by a conservative Donald Trump–appointed judge in Texas banning the drug as the appeal works its way through the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. This is a temporary victory for the Biden administration in its fight to protect abortion access in a post-Roe America. Mifepristone, alongside misoprostol, is used in more than half of all abortions performed in the US.

The Supreme Court decision is the latest twist in what has been a closely watched legal clash between the Biden Justice Department and a conservative legal group, the Alliance Defending Freedom, which sued the FDA over its 2000 approval of mifepristone. The mifepristone case is one of the most far-reaching anti-abortion efforts to reach the Supreme Court since the justices overturned Roe v. Wade last June.

The lawsuit started in Texas, where earlier this month a conservative Trump-appointed judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issued a ruling in the case that would have revoked the FDA approval of the drug—despite the fact that it had been on the market for more than two decades. Attorney General Merrick Garland filed an appeal with the US Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals within hours. A conservative three-judge panel of the appeals court maintained the FDA’s 2000 approval of mifepristone—arguing that too much time had passed for the plaintiffs’ challenge. But it did side with Kacsmaryk’s decision to undo the FDA’s more recent changes that began in 2016—which broadened access to mifepristone, allowing it to be delivered to patients by mail, and extended the use of the drug up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.

After the Fifth Circuit Court decision, the Justice Department filed an emergency application with the Supreme Court to maintain mifepristone’s FDA approvals. Last Friday, Justice Samuel Alito issued an order that halted the restrictions the US Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals placed on the drug. While that mifepristone will still remain on shelves for now is a victory for access, reproductive rights activists stress that this lawsuit still could have far-reaching consequences.

“We are in the middle of an abortion-access crisis…. There is a lot of pressure put on states that are abortion-access states to care for the patients who no longer have the ability to access that care within their own state. So you add this on top of that, you are perpetuating and exacerbating an already fragile public health system—it’s dangerous,” a reproductive rights advocate said of this latest antiabortion push.

This person added, “This is another attack on abortion in this country, and it is a politically motivated one, not based in science or in the law.”

Mifepristone, a leading abortion drug, will stay

The work of legendary ethnobiologist, conservationist and activist Jane Goodall has already inspired people to care for endangered species and the environment for decades — but the doctor’s latest endeavor continues her work in motivating the next generation.

Apple TV+’s mission-driven children’s series “Jane” harnesses the power of TV, with Emmy-winning creator J.J. Johnson (“Endlings,” “Ghostwriter”) using Goodall’s teachings to motivate kids to take a stand for endangered species and care for the environment. “Jane,” from the Jane Goodall Institute and Johnson’s company Sinking Ship Entertainment, premiered on April 14, with 10 episodes now available on Apple TV+.

“Jane” features eager 9-year-old environmentalist Jane Garcia (Ava Louise Murchison) — who is inspired to help save the planet, following in the footsteps of her role model, Goodall — along with her friends David (Mason Blomberg) and a chimpanzee named Greybeard. Each episode focuses on a different endangered species, such as Apis mellifera (Western honey bee) and Panthera tigris (tiger). Blending live action and CGI — and featuring an epic theme song “One Step Closer” written by Diane Warren, and sung by Leona Lewis — the show depicts the friends taking a stand for the species and the environment, and getting into occasional trouble along the way. The episodes all end with the friends video-chatting with real-life animal experts, particularly highlighting women and people of color.

While Goodall’s years of dedication to great apes research and advocacy have made her a household name in the 21st century, she began her work at age 26 in 1960 studying chimpanzees. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977, which fosters research, advocacy as well as community-led conservation, and it empowers children — particularly through its youth program Roots and Shoots, which was founded in 1991.

A United Nations Messenger of Peace and a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE), Goodall’s research on chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania helped change scientists’ understanding of humans’ relationship to animals. The research continues in Tanzania through the Jane Goodall Institute Gombe Stream Research Center, and it is the world’s longest-running chimpanzee study.

Also a prolific author, Goodall has adult and children’s literary works such as “The Book of Hope,” “In the Shadow of Man” and “Rickie and Henri: A True Story.”

Goodall is no stranger to the screen, however, as the subject of dozens of films including “Chimps, So Like Us,” “Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees” and “Jane Goodall: The Hope” — as well as Brett Morgen’s 2017 Emmy-nominated documentary, also called “Jane.” While Goodall did not create this “Jane” for Apple TV+, her life’s work and teachings inspire the show’s protagonist who idolizes her, and if Goodall had not approved the show’s concept when it was in development, it would not have moved forward.

Goodall, who turned 89 earlier this month, spoke with Variety over Zoom about how she hopes “Jane” inspires the youngest generation, and what she hopes to accomplish next in her career.

How do you hope viewers, especially children, react when they see “Jane”?

I hope that it will encourage them to actually think more about endangered species — to think about the fact that if we’re not careful, many of these species will disappear. I hope it also will encourage young people to join our Roots and Shoots program, which is in 68 countries. It’s about young people choosing projects to help — animals, people and the environment — deciding what they want to do, working out what they can do, rolling up their sleeves and taking action.

So if this Jane Garcia encourages real-life activities, it’ll be great. I hope it will encourage young people to join in the effort to make this a better world, to choose projects that will help to save the environment before it’s too late.

Talk about environmental issues often creates anxiety in children and young adults, but it is still obviously important to learn about — how do you, through this show or beyond, hope to inspire the next generation without causing anxiety?

That’s my entire program Roots and Shoots, it’s all about taking action. If young people get together and work on projects, which is the same sort of thing with Sinking Ship Entertainment, then it’s all about positive change. We need to know that many species are close to extinction, but that we have to stop that from happening. And therefore we have to work together to find out ways of saving the animals that are moving toward extinction. We need to know about the doom and gloom — I talk about it all the time. But at the same time, it’s desperately important to give people hope, especially young people, because, yes, we can make a difference.

So “Jane” shows young people how they can get together and solve the “doom and gloom” effectively?

Yeah, hopefully. The goal is to try and get young people involved and taking action, and stepping on beyond that to do more. It’s young people getting really worried, but then working together with older people who are also wanting to try to save the species. So it’s a complete mixture.

How do we inspire the next generation to create change, without placing blame on children for a situation they didn’t create?

There are major problems and, yes, all sorts of things have led to unfortunate decreases in numbers of endangered species. But the whole emphasis is on working together to create change. Let’s get young people involved, talk about what can be done to make a difference and then, as I say, roll up their sleeves and work out what they can do. And taking action is going to be different with different species. And, basically, I hope that this program will have enough fun in it, as well as understanding the problem, that young people will be pushing toward saving a lot of these animals. Many animals on the very brink of extinction have been given another chance.

What’s an example of a species that was pushed toward extinction, but human intervention reversed the course?

My favorite one is that little black robin that was reduced to just two individuals, one male and one female. That was it. And through some very clever work, there are now about 500 of them. They’re all genetically identical, of course, but they’re being spread into four different islands. So, hopefully, there will be some genetic change so they’re not all identical, since that’s not very healthy. There are many, many stories like that.

What message do you have for people who feel hopeless, or that they alone cannot make a difference?

People have to realize that every single one of us can make a difference. We could just say, “Oh well, I know that animals are becoming extinct. There’s nothing I can do about it.” That’s really going to be the end of us. But if you decide, “I will try and make a difference, I will do something every single day,” then we can make a difference. We can choose what we can do: Some of us can help animals, some of us can help planting trees, some of us can help whatever it is that we care about. And if we all choose projects to make the world better, then it’s going to make a major difference. We don’t all give up and say, “Well, it’s just me, there’s nothing I can do.” If we give up, then the future is not very good, is it? We all have to do our bit to try and persuade other people. We’re in the middle of a pretty bad, dark space. So for young people to join in and feel, “Gosh, if I do this, I will be making the world a better place,” that’s really important.

You’ve done so much in your life and in your career — what else do you look forward to accomplishing?

I want our Roots and Shoots program to be in every school in every country. But I always say, “If you try and aim for the stars, you might reach the moon. If you aim for the moon, you might reach the head of Mount Everest,” for example. So that’s the same for the stars — and at least we can reach the moon and help to protect the various animals and plants that are facing tremendous danger. The young and old alike in different countries need to really, really work hard to save these creatures. We’ve got to do it now.

Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson has confirmed that she has no plans to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future.

Johansson joined fellow Marvel alum and actress Gwyneth Paltrow — who played Pepper Potts — on an episode of The Goop Podcast. The duo discussed their time in the MCU, which led to Paltrow asking if Johansson sees a Marvel return in her future.

Though the character of Black Widow died in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Johansson did reprise the role for the 2021 prequel Black Widow. The Avengers star confirmed she’s finished with the MCU, but noted that it was “such a unique experience.”

“I’m done,” Johansson stated. “Chapter is over. I did all that I had to do. Also coming back and playing a character again and again, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience,” (via Variety.)

Johansson played Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in nine Marvel Studios movies. After making her first appearance as the character in Iron Man 2, she appeared in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow, with a cameo appearance in the mid-credits scene of Captain Marvel. The actress will next be seen in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City.

Zoe Lister-Jones’ new Roku series “Slip” has taken the fascination with metaverses to a whole new dimension… courtesy of a few Earth-moving orgasms that take her out of this world. Literally.

“Slip” centers on Lister-Jones’ character, Mae Cannon, whose life is “a super banal dream where nothing really happens” and the excitement happens when she is dreaming. Or is her dream world reality? “You just need to wake up, but then you realize there’s nothing to wake up from because the dream is occurring while you’re awake, sleeping to find meaning and waking to lose it,” she says at the start of the Roku series. “And all you wanna do is sleep to dream of something more.”

The series — which Lister-Jones created, wrote, directed and stars in — is both funny and profound, which rarely happens. She wrote the entire first season during COVID lockdown, as she was struggling with depression and “a sort of sense of stuckness, of restlessness in my own life, and I didn’t know how to navigate it.”

“For me, as a writer, every project begins with a sort of existential question/crisis that I’m facing personally, and I think I use writing as a way for me to try to find some answers to the tougher questions that we contend with in life and what we do with a desire for more. It got all the louder in quarantine, obviously,” she told TheWrap. “Those voices sort of became impossible to ignore.”

Lister-Jones admits that she is a person who will meet someone and, even if she feels just the slightest connection, she’ll flash forward to an entire life together in her mind. “And I thought it was such a fun conceit to be able to actually see what those fantasies would look like lived out, to use orgasm as sort of mode of transport, because I was also really interested in exploring female desire and female sexuality in a way that was really central to the narrative.”

And that it is. Whenever Mae has an orgasm, she wakes up the following morning to discover she has been transported to a parallel universe in which her bedmate is her spouse and her life in drastically different.

“The courage it takes to really explore all facets of a self, which, allegorically, I think this show is about and the sort of hungry ghosts that live within us all. You know, the insatiable nature of what it is to be human and how we deal with all the ‘what ifs’ that plague us in a life,” Lister-Jones said. “[That] I think, again, in quarantine came into such hyper focus. There was such a nostalgic quality of like, ‘Should I have married my high school boyfriend?’ All of those questions of how do I find that sense of internal safety and balance?”

Although the show hasn’t been given a green light for a second season, they did green light a writers room, so all scripts are written for a sophomore year. “Without giving away any spoilers, it is a bats–t second season and also has sex as it’s propulsive force,” she teases. “In Season 1, Mae is not the agent of her own change or self-discovery. She’s being catapulted from world to world and she’s just sort of trying to catch up. In Season 2, I wanted to create a narrative in which she was shepherding her own ship.”

“Slip” is definitely a wild ride, one that shows off Lister-Jones’ talent as a writer, director and actor who brings a depth of emotion – whatever it might be – to every scene.

“If you’re looking to have fun and go on a really wild adventure but also be turned on,” this is the show for you, she said. “ I really wanted to make a show that was sexy and sex forward, and that was still irreverent and funny and escapist and, and also dealing with a very universal question that we’re all facing, whether we’re in a relationship or not, of how do we find happiness and what do we do with all of our desires for more.”

You can check out our entire interview with Lister-Jones in the video at the top.

A full season on “Slip” is streaming now on Roku.

DON’T TELL ANYBODY THE SECRETS I TOLD YOU: A Memoir, by Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Williams, the Grammy-winning 70-year-old songwriter, was born in Lake Charles, La. Her grandfathers were both preachers; one was a civil rights advocate. Her father, Miller Williams, was an award-winning poet. Her mother loved music and played the piano. Williams grew up in Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Utah, Chile and Mexico. On paper, it was an ideal upbringing for the artist she became: a nomadic touring musician whose songs draw on deep Southern roots, using matter-of-fact imagery to conjure tempestuous emotions.

But her pedigree didn’t make her life fall neatly into place, as Williams recalls in her memoir, “Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You.” “I’ve held back from talking about my childhood over the decades of my life,” she notes. “I’ve written songs about it instead.”

Williams’s mother was sexually abused as a child, she writes, and lived with schizophrenia and alcoholism. Her poet-professor father was a mentor and protector, but he also had a temper. Williams’s parents divorced after her father took up with one of his teenage students.

In the title song of her best-selling album, “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road,” Williams sings about being a “Child in the back seat ’bout four or five years/Lookin’ out the window, little bit of dirt mixed with tears.” When her father first heard it, he told Williams that she was that crying little girl; until then, Williams hadn’t realized she was writing about herself.

Williams’s memoir is as flinty, earthy and plain-spoken as her songs. She reveals the autobiographical underpinnings of some of her darkest lyrics, but she also tells a larger tale: of artistic determination battling personal insecurity; of misjudging and being misjudged by men and by the music business; and of steadfastly holding her own.

She doesn’t give in: not on a trendy remix, not on her album cover photos, not on her instincts. She can handle being called difficult or “insane” even though, she admits, “There are times when I can bring an extra layer of unpredictable emotion to a situation that is already tough to begin with.” The lasting results are in her songs.

Williams envisioned life as a musician soon after she picked up a guitar. She started performing folk songs in her teens. But even as she honed her own songwriting and built local reputations — in Texas and then in Los Angeles — she worked day jobs well into her 30s. Major labels rejected her, again and again, as being “too country for rock” but “too rock for country.”

From the beginning — two low-budget Folkways albums she made in 1979 and 1980 — Williams sang about elemental subjects: desire, sorrow, love, traveling, survival, death. Some of her songs are kiss-offs; some offer regrets; some are elegies; some are takedowns. They’re always grounded in homely details. In “Hot Blood,” a bluesy outpouring of female lust, she sings about feeling “a cold chill” as she watches a guy just “fixin’ your flat with a tire iron.”

It took an English punk label, Rough Trade, to release “Lucinda Williams,” her 1988 breakthrough album. A decade later, “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” marked her commercial peak. But recording that album, she recalls in the memoir, was lengthy and fraught. Making records, she writes, “can test the limits and boundaries of everyone involved. I now understand that is normal.”

Getting the sound Williams wanted on “Car Wheels” led to the breakup of her longtime band and clashes with two producers. Then contractual tangles delayed the release of the finished album for two years. Williams also nixed a video concept from the director Paul Schrader, deciding, “He was just another guy trying to impose his vision on a female artist. ‘Car Wheels’ did fine without a video.”

Throughout her book, Williams recognizes her own appetites and mistakes. She writes about suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder and bouts of depression, and she recognizes her weakness for the kind of boyfriend she calls “a poet on a motorcycle,” guys who often turned out to be cheaters, addicts or worse.

She came through anyway. “That relationship was done, but I got a good song out of it,” she writes about one romantic debacle. Williams has been married since 2009 to her manager, producer and songwriting collaborator, Tom Overby.

Although Williams finished her book in 2022, it doesn’t mention her 2020 stroke; she can no longer play guitar. But she returned to touring in 2021 and persists in writing songs; she’s releasing a new album in June. Her memoir shows how deep that grit runs.

DON’T TELL ANYBODY THE SECRETS I TOLD

The trailer (below) for “Draw for Change!” – which was named best documentary series at Canneseries this week – has debuted. The feature film version of the first of its six episodes, “Behind the Lines,” will world premiere at Visions du Réel Film Festival on April 28.

The series, from creators Guillaume Vandenberghe and Vincent Coen, profiles six female cartoonists working in six geographic areas of the world, in six individual films and broadcast episodes. Female directors with close connections to each of the societies represented were chosen to tell the stories.

Autlook Film Sales is handling international sales.

“After decades of male directed series on male artists, this series brings us stories about female artists from a female perspective,” producer Hanne Phlypo said. “The stakes are very high for these artists, and championing them by telling their stories is our contribution to empowering global democracy – one laugh at a time.”

Vandenberghe and Coen said: “In this world where male autocrats solidify their powers, and algorithmic driven populism reshuffles the cards, who are the people that will make a difference? Cartoonists.”

“Behind the Lines” is directed by Alisar Hassan and Alaa Amer, and profiles cartoon artist Amany Al-Ali throughout 2020-2022 from her home in Idlib, Syria, amid devastating bombing attacks during the war.

Other female directors chosen are Sama Pana (India), Karen Vázquez Guadarrama (Mexico), Nada Riyadh (Egypt), Anna Moiseenko (Russia), and Laura Nix (U.S.). Other cartoon artists chosen for the project are: Rachita Taneja (India), Mar Maremoto (Mexico), Doaa El-Adl (Egypt), Victoria Lomasko (Russia), and Laura Nix (U.S.).

The series will create an educational program on gender equality in Belgium, expected to be exported to other countries by Evelien De Graef, the series impact producer/partner from Blue Bird Docs. Director Mar Maremoto (Mexico) will also deliver a VR experience of her film.

Clin D’Oeil Films produces the series, in co-production with A_Bahn, Ma.Ja.De. Filmproduktion, Point Du Jour – Les Films Du Balibari, Submarine, Real Lava, ARTE France, SWR/ARTE, ARTE G.E.I.E., WRD, VRT, RTBF and Shelter Prod.

It is produced by Hanne Phlypo, and co-produced by Estelle Robin You, Heino Deckert, Marion Guth, François Le Gall, Femke Wolting and Bruno Felix. Executive produced by Salma Abdalla and Sigrid Dyekjaer. Associate produced by Pierre Urbain and David Mouraire.

The trailer (below) for “Draw for Change!”

KHARTOUM, Sudan — The Sudanese army said Saturday it was coordinating efforts to evacuate American, British, Chinese and French citizens and diplomats from Sudan on military aircraft, as the bloody fighting that has engulfed the vast African nation entered its second week.

The military said that its chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, had spoken to leaders of several countries who have requested safe evacuations of their citizens and diplomats from Sudan. The prospect has vexed officials as most major airports have become battlegrounds and movement out of the capital, Khartoum, has proven intensely dangerous.

Burhan “agreed to provide the necessary assistance to secure such evacuations for various countries,” the military said.

Questions have swirled over how the mass rescues of foreign citizens would unfold, with Sudan’s main international airport closed and millions of people sheltering indoors. As battles between the Sudanese army led by Burhan and a rival powerful paramilitary group rage in and around Khartoum, including in residential areas, foreign countries have struggled to repatriate their citizens — some of whom are running short on food and basic supplies while hunkered down.

Burhan said that some diplomats from Saudi Arabia had already been transferred by land to Port Sudan, the country’s main seaport on the Red Sea, and airlifted back to the kingdom. He said that Jordan’s diplomats would soon be evacuated in the same way. The port is in Sudan’s far east, some 840 kilometers (520 miles) from Khartoum.

The Pentagon said earlier this week it was moving additional troops and equipment to a Naval base in the tiny Gulf of Aden nation of Djibouti to prepare for the evacuation of U.S. Embassy personnel. But the White House said Friday it had no plans for a government-coordinated evacuation of an estimated 16,000 American citizens trapped in Sudan.

Burhan told Saudi-owned TV station Al-Hadath on Saturday that Khartoum’s airport would not handle any evacuations because of the ongoing fighting. He claimed that the military had regained control over all the other airports in the country, except for one in the southwestern city of Nyala.

“We share the international community’s concern about foreign nationals,” he said. “Living conditions are deteriorating.”

Even as the warring sides said Friday they’d agreed to a cease-fire for the three-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, explosions and gunfire rang out across Khartoum on Saturday. Two cease-fire attempts earlier this week also rapidly collapsed. The turmoil has dealt a perhaps fatal blow to hopes for the country’s transition to a civilian-led democracy and raised concerns the chaos could draw in its neighbors, including Chad, Egypt and Libya.

“People need to realize that the war has been continuous since day one. It has not stopped for one moment,” said Atiya Abdalla Atiya, secretary of the Sudanese Doctors’ Syndicate, which monitors casualties. The clashes have killed over 400 people so far, according to the World Health Organization. The bombardments, gunbattles and sniper fire in densely populated areas have hit civilian infrastructure, including many hospitals.

The international airport near the center of the capital has come under heavy shelling as the paramilitary group, known as the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, has tried to take control of the compound. In an apparent effort to oust the RSF fighters, the Sudanese army has pounded the airport with airstrikes, gutting at least one runway and leaving wrecked planes scattered on the tarmac. The full extent of damage at the airfield remains unclear.

On Saturday, Saudi Arabia and Jordan both announced that they had started arranging for the repatriation of their citizens stuck in Sudan. Officials did not elaborate on how the plans would unfold. Jordan said it was “taking into account the security conditions on the ground” and was coordinating its efforts with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The conflict has opened a dangerous new chapter in Sudan’s history, thrusting the country into uncertainty.

“No one can predict when and how this war will end,” Burhan told Al-Hadath. “I am currently in the command center and will only leave it in a coffin.”

The current explosion of violence came after Burhan and the chief of the RSF, Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, fell out over a recent internationally brokered deal with democracy activists that was meant to incorporate the RSF into the military and eventually lead to civilian rule.

The rival generals rose to power in the tumultuous aftermath of popular uprisings that led to the ouster of Sudan’s longtime ruler, Omar al-Bashir, in 2019. Two years later, they joined forces to seize power in a coup that ousted the civilian leaders.

Both the military and RSF have a long history of human rights abuses. The RSF was born out of the Janjaweed militias, which were accused of atrocities in crushing a rebellion in Sudan’s western Darfur region in the early 2000s.

Many Sudanese — trapped in their homes as food supplies dwindle — fear that despite the generals’ repeated promises, the violence will only escalate as tens of thousands of foreign citizens prepare to escape Sudan.

“We are sure both sides of fighting are more careful about foreign lives than the lives of Sudanese citizens,” Atiya said.

After Emily Ratajkowski and Harry Styles were spotted packing on the PDA, the model opened up about the now-viral photos and a potential rivalry with his ex-girlfriend Olivia Wilde.

“It’s very bizarre to have certain experiences and then have the whole world know about them and comment on them. I’m just a person who’s gone from a three-year relationship to a four-year relationship,” Ratajkowski, 31, told Spanish Vogue in a profile published on Thursday, April 20, referring to her marriage with Sebastian Bear-McClard, which ended in July 2022. “So this is the first time in a long time that I’ve been in a dating stage.”

She continued: “The interest there is in that particular area is very strange. Not that I’m surprised, but it’s a tiny slice of my life. Most of my life is focused on my son and my work.”

The My Body author, who shares 2-year-old son Sylvester with her estranged husband, was spotted making out with the 29-year-old One Direction alum last month. The twosome were photographed canoodling on the street in Tokyo, where Styles was in town for his Love On Tour live concerts.

“I didn’t expect this to happen,” Ratajkowski confessed to Spanish Vogue of the snapshots. “I think, in general, there’s a reason certain celebrities live in [Los Angeles], hire security, don’t go to public restaurants. … So the idea of giving [my freedom] up for the sake of privacy is something I haven’t considered yet.”

While the pair immediately refrained from commenting on their romantic status after the photos made headlines, a source told Us Weekly last month that the “Matilda” crooner was “very attracted” to Ratajkowski and was “thrilled” about their hookup. The “High Low” podcast host, however, was not ready for a long-term commitment following her divorce. (She filed to dissolve her marriage to Bear-McClard, 36, in September 2022.)

“Emily isn’t looking for anything serious,” the insider exclusively told Us in March. “She’s just trying to live her best single life and have fun.”

Shortly after the Gone Girl actress — who was previously linked to Brad Pitt, Pete Davidson and Eric Andre — and Styles’ kiss went viral, fans also speculated about a potential feud between Ratajkowski and Wilde, 39. (The Don’t Worry Darling director, who had previously been friendly with Ratajkowski, dated Styles for nearly two years until their breakup in November 2022.)

“[Olivia] is trying not to be jealous because she is moving on as well,” a second source told Us later in March, noting that Wilde — who shares two children with ex Jason Sudeikis — was “upset” that the “Watermelon Sugar” singer and Ratajkowski had gotten cozy.

The I Feel Pretty actress, for her part, even compared the potential rivalry to Adam Levine’s cheating scandal. The Maroon 5 frontman, 44, was publicly accused in September 2022 of cheating on his then-pregnant wife, Behati Prinsloo, with multiple women. Levine, who shares three children with the 34-year-old Namibia native, has since denied the allegations and reprioritized his relationship with Prinsloo.

“These approaches occur over and over again. I did a TikTok talking about it when the Adam Levine case came to light. All my algorithm on this social network showed content focused on slut-shaming a 23-year-old girl,” Ratajkowski told Spanish Vogue in her cover story, referring to Sumner Stroh, the first woman to reveal her alleged romance with Levine. “I was frustrated with the way in which an attack narrative was being established on this girl, instead of asking what happens to the person who is in a relationship and as such has contracted obligations.”

She added: “In the case [of my photos with Harry], it’s more of the same. I feel bad for Olivia because she has had to suffer this situation on several occasions.”

The iCarly alum further noted that there had been no confrontation between herself and Olivia, even calling the social media drama an “unfortunate issue.”

Frustrated users on Twitter are taking up arms against accounts with blue check marks and blocking them en masse in an effort they are calling #BlockTheBlue.

Previously, the blue check mark denoted a “legacy account” that was from a prominent organization or person, whose identity had been verified. But that changed Thursday, when the social media company stripped many public figures, media outlets, celebrities, businesses and others of the symbol, assigning it only to paid subscribers of Twitter Blue.

Alejandra Caraballo, an instructor at Harvard Law School’s Cyberlaw Clinic, said the new verification policy makes Twitter unusable. “Any troll can get verified and ensure the worst content is prioritized. It’s a spam and abuse enhancement tool,” she wrote, noting that she had already blocked nearly 200,000 Twitter Blue accounts.

Max Collins, who runs the popular Twitter account for rock band Eve 6 and is blocking blue checks, said in an email that he now associates the symbol with “people who are really into crypto and have a borderline fanatic devotion” to Twitter owner Elon Musk and “hard line right wing ideologues.” Alastair McAlphine, an infectious diseases pediatrician, tweeted, “Block blue checks on sight for a happier, healthier [timeline]!”

Shortly after the #BlockTheBlue hashtag took off, Twitter on Friday suspended the @BlockTheBlue account. Musk supporters have meanwhile called on Twitter users to “pay the eight,” referring to the $8 monthly fee to get a check mark through the Twitter Blue subscription. Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion last fall. Under his leadership, it has suspended several journalists who covered him, dismantled policies aimed at protecting vulnerable groups and temporarily changed the logo of the site to the dogecoin symbol. In the months since his purchase, hate speech has been amplified, The Washington Post reported. Several prominent figures and organizations have also left the platform, including NPR, which Musk labeled “state-affiliated media” earlier this month.

Musk has sought to democratize the policy around the blue check mark, which had become something of a status marker. Some well-known figures were gifted free Twitter Blue subscriptions by Musk, including author Stephen King, who did not appear to want one.

On Friday, Twitter users posted videos of themselves blocking dozens of accounts with paid blue check marks at once and offered strategies for targeting such accounts efficiently. Memes circulated casting those behind #BlockTheBlue as sci-fi gladiators attacking blue badges and hunters out for “bluecheck season.” Environmentalist Bill McKibben supported the #BlockTheBlue effort, writing on Twitter, “I’ve never blocked anyone, but this approach seems sound.”

Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has broken yet another box office record for animation with an estimated $58 million in its third weekend.

Just like last weekend, “Mario” has posted the highest total ever seen for an animated film in its third weekend and, at the moment, the seventh highest third weekend for any film. Given how the last two weekends have seen the film’s estimates rise as the weekend goes on, there’s still a chance that this $58 million estimate could rise to $60 million or higher.

Currently, Universal estimates that “Super Mario Bros.” will pass the $850 million mark worldwide by the end of the weekend, putting it in position in this coming week to pass the $939 million global total of “Minions: The Rise of Gru” to become the highest grossing animated film of the post-shutdown era. “Mario” has already passed “Rise of Gru” at the domestic box office, as it is set to reach $434 million in North America by the end of the weekend.

Melanie Lynskey Discusses Losing Friendship With Kate

Giving birth in the United States is diabolical. Or at least it is according to Beverly Mantle, one of two identical-twin OB-GYNs played by Rachel Weisz in the Prime Video miniseries “Dead Ringers.”

A gender-switched remake of David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller, the drama is an unsettling exploration of the codependent relationship between Beverly and her twin sister, Elliot, Manhattan physicians who practice medicine — and do just about everything else — together, but who come to realize their approaches to life and work may be incompatible.

Beverly — the reserved, compassionate one who wears her hair back — wants to “change the way women birth, forever” by opening a revolutionary birthing center. Elliot is an impulsive, hair-down type, who is more excited about pushing scientific and ethical boundaries with a cutting-edge embryology lab than about providing compassionate care.

Created by acclaimed playwright and showrunner Alice Birch, and anchored by a riveting dual performance by Weisz, the series maintains the surreal, uncanny tone of the original film, which starred a deliciously sinister Jeremy Irons.

But expanded to six hours and told from a decidedly feminine perspective, “Dead Ringers” also offers an unusually clear-eyed look at reproductive healthcare in the United States — from the agony of infertility and pregnancy loss to the everyday perils of childbirth, particularly for women of color.

And it wastes no time in doing so: Minutes into the pilot episode, Beverly, who has been trying unsuccessfully to have a baby, scoops bloody tissue out of the toilet after experiencing yet another miscarriage. Soon after, in a visceral montage, she and Elliot do their thing — using forceps, scalpels, suction devices and all manner of verbal coaxing to deliver babies vaginally and via C-section, all the while blood splattering their shoes. Elsewhere, the show grapples with such fraught issues as the regulation of embryos grown outside the womb, the racist origins of modern gynecology, surrogacy and the influence of wealthy benefactors on medical research.

“We knew we wanted it to begin in a really grounded place,” said Birch in a joint phone conversation with Weisz, who played a hands-on role as an executive producer on the series. “The twins are so ambitious, and they have these very clear ideas about how to make things better, that I felt like I needed to make the case for imagining something different. We wanted the births to feel real and for those patients to feel like real women who walk in and out of clinics today.”

Strict realism and preachy didacticism are not the goals of this highly stylized remake (in a nod to the original, the doctors and nurses wear crimson scrubs), but in order for the story to work — and for both Beverly and Elliot’s competing visions to resonate as powerfully as they do — the medicine needed to be anchored in truth. “Dead Ringers” is one of a growing number of TV shows, including “This Is Going to Hurt” and “I Hate Suzie Too,” that resist the squeamishness that so often hampers depictions of women’s bodies to portray reproductive health with a radical form of candor.

“Women’s bodies have been politicized forever,” Birch said. “So I think the show would have felt timely whenever it was coming out.”

Still, at a moment when maternal mortality rates are rising along with restrictions on people’s ability to control when and if they become parents now that Roe vs. Wade has been overturned, Beverly’s tirade about the “f—” system that “bullies and scares and terrorizes and humiliates and ruins women and their bodies” is likely to strike many viewers as the least hyperbolic aspect of the entire series.

A fan of the Cronenberg film since she first saw it as a teenager, Weisz was intrigued by the “twisted, bizarre, codependent relationship” at its center, she said — one that could easily be switched and turned into two rich characters for her to portray: “There seemed to be no reason why one couldn’t have two female identical twins.”

The actor brought the idea for a remake to Annapurna Pictures and suggested Birch, whose TV credits include “Succession” and “Normal People,” to shepherd the adaptation.

Birch was excited about opening up the story by delving further into the twins’ work in obstetrics. In an early conversation with Weisz, Birch recalled a doctor who’d talked about choosing when life begins when they performed C-sections and described themselves in godlike fashion. “It seemed like that might be something that our twins would say,” she said.

The writers room, which consisted of seven women (including Weisz), became a venue for sharing stories about giving birth, visiting the gynecologist and other personal experiences that are now “part of the archaeological layers in the DNA of the whole project,” said Weisz.

The writers used Beverly and Elliot’s competing personalities to explore divergent approaches to women’s health. Beverly believes that pregnancy should be treated as a normal physical condition, not a disease — a philosophical descendant of Ina May Gaskin, the pioneering American midwife (even if her birthing center is much fancier than Gaskin’s famous Tennessee farm). Elliot, meanwhile, just wants a lab where she can play the role of maverick scientist and violate accepted norms with impunity, as she is already inclined to do.

To realize both their dreams, the Mantles turn to a wealthy benefactor named Rebecca (played by Jennifer Ehle) who has made a fortune selling opioids. (Similarities to the Sackler family are surely not coincidental.)

“Finding these people who would be literally the worst people for her to have to accept the money from enabled us to keep asking those really complicated questions,” said Birch.

To better understand the medical and ethical ramifications of Elliot’s embryological experiments, the writers consulted scientists at the Francis Crick Institute in London. The production also enlisted a number of experts in reproductive medicine, including Barbara Sellars, a renowned New York City midwife, and Susan Grant, a recently retired OB-GYN who practiced at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, who offered feedback on scripts and were present on set when they were filming deliveries and other procedures.

Grant was called in to set “constantly,” she said. “You really need somebody who does it on a day-to-day basis to come in and say, ‘No, hold your hands this way.’ ‘The fetal heart rate would not be that number.’ I was really integrally involved. They wanted to get it right.”

She was struck by “the real female dominance essence and warmth” she encountered on location. (Directors on the series included Sean Durkin, Karyn Kusama, Karena Evans and Lauren Wolkstein.) For her part, Weisz was thrilled to be surrounded by experts who regaled her with their stories from the birthing trenches: “To sit and chat between takes with someone who spent their life delivering babies? It doesn’t get any better for me.”

Weisz also attended several births as part of her preparation for the series. “We know that it happens every second. It’s sort of the most ordinary thing that happens,” she said. “But to witness it feels completely extraordinary and miraculous and astonishing.”

Grant said one of the more challenging, if less bloody, scenes involved an effort to rotate a breech baby by applying manual pressure to a pregnant belly. Suturing was also tricky. But she was impressed by the research that Birch and the writers had already done. In one instance, she questioned the plausibility of an especially wrenching plot twist, only to have Birch cite an article about a nearly identical case.

The series is graphic — brace yourself for close-up shots of crowning babies — but it captures the power of being there when a new life enters the world, said Grant. “That’s the most amazing thing: when you see this giant head come out of a small vagina.”

Giving birth in the United States

Recently, Iron Man star Gwyneth Paltrow was asked yet again if she’d return to the MCU, and she now seems, again, interested in a comeback.

With such a poor reception, many are clamoring for a return to form, and many former MCU actors such as Chris Evans are being asked if they’d ever be interested in returning to the comic book franchise.

While her vague statement was just a pronouncement of interest. However, it seems that her initial interest may be dispersed since she gave hope last year to fans that would like to see a Pepper Potts reprisal.

Iron Man Star Uninterested About MCU Comeback

Marvel

Speaking on a recent episode of The Goop Podcast, fellow Marvel alumni Scarlett Johansson asked the 50-year-old Pepper Potts actress if she was done with the MCU. The star responded by saying that she “think[s] so.”

“I think so. I mean, I didn’t die so they can always ask me.”

This is a marked change from when this question was asked of her in 2022, in which the actress seemed to express interest in playing Pepper Potts again and shed some doubt on whether she was truly done with Marvel.

When asked on Instagram in July 2022, Paltrow responded to a fan who asked if she would return to the MCU,  saying “yo creo que sí,” which translates to “I think so.”

The actress acknowledged that her character “didn’t die” and Marvel could “always ask [her back],” to which Johansson said she thinks Paltrow “may come back at some point.”

However, Paltrow seemed unenthused about reprising an older Pepper Potts, balking at the prospect of a “64-year-old Pepper Potts:”

“Really? A 64-year-old Pepper Potts? How great.”

Johansson joked that an older Pepper Potts was something she could envision and that the Marvel Studios executives would “never let [Paltrow] go.”

Has Marvel Missed the Chance for a Pepper Potts Comeback?

Pepper Potts was an enduring character during Marvel’s earlier phases. She was one of the first significant female characters in the franchise and came about at a time when diversity was still sorely lacking in the film industry.

While the representation of women across the MCU and film at large is still imperfect, huge strides have since been made since 2008, with last year’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever becoming the biggest women-led superhero movie of all time in North America.

However, though Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts remains popular among fans, it seems that Marvel wants to move away from the Infinity Saga and embrace the new faces that were ushered in during Phase 4.

Perhaps Armor Wars would make the most sense to revisit the CEO of Stark Industries, given that the film is set to revolve around Rhodey struggling in the aftermath of Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame.

However, the upcoming film has conflicting updates, and there has been no word on a Paltrow appearance in any form.

Of course, although Paltrow seems to have a change of heart, the actress did at once seem more willing to return so long as filming only took a few days. Unknown to fans, something could well be in the works, and Paltrow is unable to share any information. Alternatively, a return could have been on the table but has since been rescinded.

As it stands, though, it seems that Paltrow has had a change of heart about returning to the comic-book franchise. The actress has enjoyed an illustrious career in the spotlight, and much like Chris Evans, may not want to tarnish the memories she did have back when the Iron Man trilogy was ongoing.

All three Iron Man films are streaming now on Disney+.

Super Bowl Sunday has gifted us our latest look at the upcoming comic book movie outing, The Flash, revealing Ezra Miller as the titular super-speedster and teasing the madness of the DC multiverse. Released courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures, audiences have waited patiently for the long-delayed solo outing of The Flash. And all that patience has now finally paid off. Check out the newly released trailer for The Flash below.

The official synopsis for The Flash reads:

“Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?”

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson, The Flash will take major inspiration from the DC comic book arc, Flashpoint and sees the multiverse collapse after Barry Allen travels back in time in an attempt to prevent his mother’s murder. But, of course, messing with the madness of the multiverse never works out how these heroes hope, and Barry’s actions bring unintended consequences not only to his timeline, but all the timelines.

The Flash finds Zack Snyder’s Justice League star Ezra Miller reprising the role of Barry Allen, aka The Flash, alongside Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Michael Shannon as General Zod, and Antje Traue as Faora-Ul.

The Flash will also feature two versions of The Dark Knight, with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice star Ben Affleck due to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, alongside Michael Keaton, who will once again don the cape and cowl after more than three decades.

The Flash Brings Back Michael Keaton as Batman

Warner Bros. Pictures

One of the most exciting elements of The Flash is the return of Batman Returns star Michael Keaton as an aged version of the Caped Crusader. Keaton will step back into the role after 30 years, with the actor revealing what it was like to slip into the black rubber bodysuit all over again after all this time. Somewhat surprisingly, it all fit rather well. “It was shockingly normal. It was weird. Like I went, ‘Oh, oh yeah, that’s right,’” Keaton explained. “But also then you start to play the scenes, and it was a lot of memories, a lot of interesting sense memories.”

While he has previously revealed his confusion regarding cinematic multiverses, Keaton had a blast coming back as Batman and has heaped praise on director Andy Muschietti. “When it came around again first of all I was getting curious about it. I thought, ‘Boy, what would that be like?’ And then, coincidentally, there were murmurs, and I got a call from Warner Bros,” the actor said. “They wanted to talk to me about something and there was hints of Batman. It has to be good. There’s no reason to do it if it’s not good. It’s not gonna really change anything. And I just jumped in and had fun. And why would you not? You know, I mean, director Andy Muschietti is fantastic, and he’s really creative. I don’t know. It’s fun.”

The Flash is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 16.

Persona 5: The Phantom X is a new mobile and PC spin-off of the very popular Persona 5. It’s currently only slated for release in China, with no news of an international release yet.

P5X’s very first closed beta ended on March 31, and we’ve listed below what we know so far about the gameplay and story. Keep in mind that mechanics and other details revealed during the beta may change for the full release.

Who’s making the game?

Publisher Perfect World and developer Black Wings studio are making Persona 5: The Phantom X with “deep involvement” from Atlus and Sega on the creation of the characters, story, and music. Atlus character designer Shigenori Soejima–a Persona veteran who served as character designer for P5’s Phantom Thieves–designed P5X’s main character, Wonder, and his Persona.

Is there a release date yet?

Nope. More importantly, we also do not know if P5X will get localized for an international release. Persona 5: The Phantom X was announced on March 16, with closed beta registrations opening on March 17. The closed beta took place March 29-31, and according to the official announcement, was available to PC and Android users in China only.

What’s the story?

Joker, the protagonist of Persona 5, is not the main character. The new main character’s code name is Wonder, and a primary theme of Persona 5: The Phantom X is “a lack of desire.” From the trailers, it appears that Wonder–you get to name the protagonist, but we’ll refer to him as Wonder for convenience’s sake–encounters P5X’s new mascot, an owl named Luffy. Wonder will then meet a man who is “twisted by desire,” and he’ll enter the man’s baseball-themed palace to steal his Treasure.

Wonder’s persona is Janosik, a hero who “robs the rich but doesn’t kill innocents.”

Gallery

The main character Wonder and his Persona Janosik

Below is a more detailed, but still brief, breakdown of the first palace’s story in the closed beta. (Click or tap on the black bars to reveal the text.)

The game opens with Wonder in a classroom scene filling out a form detailing his future plans. He’s visibly bored and, after falling asleep, gets transported to Igor’s Velvet room. They chat about desire. Igor leaves Wonder with a warning that being without desire can cause one to give up on themselves.

Wonder then meets Luffy–an owl-looking avatar that replaces Mona’s role as companion–when he falls asleep on the subway. They go on a jaunt into combat, and Wonder awakens his Persona.

Fast-forwarding a little bit, Wonder’s at a subway stop, and he sees a guy attempting to kick a female classmate, Motoha Arai (code name Closer), off the train platform and onto the train tracks. Arai’s friend tries to defend her, but unfortunately, she becomes the one to get kicked.

Wonder enters the palace of the evil guy, and Closer secretly follows him. She gets kidnapped and then, under duress, awakens her Persona. It turns out the evil guy used to be Closer’s baseball teacher, but he has a grudge against Closer because when she was an elementary school kid, she successfully hit a pitch from him. He apparently lost his professional reputation due to that event. The story shares a lot of elements with P5’s first arc revolving around the abusive volleyball teacher Suguru Kamoshida.

Motoha Arai, a fellow high school classmate, and her persona Awilda

The closed beta’s story did not seem to resonate with some players. The story is “short and incomplete,” said user 以身为J in their evaluation of the game. “The progression of the story is too abrupt… the main character suddenly becomes a Phantom Thief and gets an owl companion.” Bilibili user Treedad also agreed in a P5X closed beta review, loosely translated, “The ‘You are me, I am me’ happens right in the beginning of the game, and then when you’re still confused about what just happened, the owl immediately tells you how to start fighting monsters.”

The developers addressed criticism towards the main storyline, and their comments are included below, in the closed beta post-mortem section.

Gameplay

Combat

P5X’s combat is largely the same as P5 and is still turn-based. However, there are a few changes. (Thanks to YouTube user Faz for uploading recorded combat gameplay):

  • One More mechanic: Triggering One More still works as it did previously. But in P5, players could choose which abilities to use in the extra turn. In P5X, One More is a specific attack and players can’t choose.
  • Weakness “meter:” In order to achieve knockdown, players need to trigger weak a certain amount of times to reduce a weakness “meter”–somewhat similar to Persona 5 Striker’s combat–to zero before the monster is knocked down.
  • Highlight: Showtime has turned into Highlight. This is triggered when all enemies are knocked down. Players can choose one character to Highlight, and the Highlighted character can deal a lot of damage of a specific attribute type. The attribute that a Highlighted character will deal is shown on the Highlight “wheel.”

Mementos

Mementos is expanded in P5X, and players can unlock parts of Mementos with “map parts” that they ram into with the Luffy bus. Mementos, according to 八咲Ureshiiiiii’s closed beta write-up, is also the place where players go to do daily quests.

Training team members and social links

Players can level up their team members, their weapons, and also their Personas. Each character has stats like attack, crit, defense, and more, which were absent in P5. There are still social links, and like in P5, you can gift character items. The extent of dates is unknown right now.

Aside from Wonder and Motoha Arai, players can also include other companions on their team like Seiji, Mont, and Yuki. They also have their own special Personas.

Gallery

Team members and their Personas

Exploration

Players can explore Tokyo and do the following activities:

  • Fishing
  • Taking photos
  • Going to the batting cage
  • Bathing in the public bathhouse
  • Exercising in the gym
  • Signing up for work shifts
  • Watching movies
  • Going on dates

It’s basically the mode that contains familiar minigames from Persona 5, with the addition of the brand-new fishing activity. A player has already put a fishing guide up, so there’s certainly excitement around the new minigame.

There are new places on the maps, like the protagonist’s very well-furnished and gigantic home. But a lot of familiar places from P5 are present, such as Tae Takemi’s clinic. Sojiro is not present anymore, and LeBlanc has been replaced by a different coffee shop with a new barista. The interior of the new shop does, however, look almost identical to LeBlanc. Player Faz tried to go up the stairs to Joker’s previous living area, but the game said it was a restricted area.

Will there be gacha? What about other mechanics found in other mobile games?

It’s likely there will be gacha mechanics. While gacha was not active during the closed beta, each character had gacha-like animations. P5X is also a mobile-centric game, so let’s just say there is a decent chance we’ll see gacha in the future.

In the closed beta, players obtained characters, including the original P5 team members, through shop currency and quest completions.

Similar to Genshin Impact’s resin, Persona 5: The Phantom X also has a stamina system. According to 八咲Ureshiiiiii’s closed beta write-up, if players want to level up Personas and weapons, they have to use stamina to enter the Metaverse to fight special monsters.

Closed beta post-mortem

Persona 5: The Phantom X keeps a lot of the mechanics from Persona 5 intact, and the art direction is almost indistinguishable from P5. There are gacha mobile elements–stamina meter and potentially gacha for character and/or weapons–but that’s not too surprising for a free-to-play mobile game. What people will likely be keeping an eye on, as game development progresses, is how the brand-new storyline in P5X will evolve.

The developer acknowledged some players’ dissatisfaction with the main storyline in a note posted after the closed beta ended. “[I want to say] thank you to every player that offered feedback and criticism of the main storyline–like the abrupt story progression, fast pacing, weak character development, and more,” said producer V. “It’s true that there are problems with the story. Also, there are currently a lot of important story moments that are getting 2D and 3D animated scenes and a majority of those are still in production. We couldn’t show those in the closed beta, and that’s why some of the story felt disjointed.”

V went on to say that Atlus’ Kazuhisa Wada and the original development team take the game’s script very seriously, and with their help, P5X’s development team believes they can deliver a better and more exciting story.

Stephen Williams is a producer, director, and writer who has worked on popular TV shows such as Lost, Undercovers, and Watchmen.

Stephen Williams recently directed Chevalier, a film based on the true story of one of France’s most important composers. Chevalier is about the journey of understanding oneself better, through the trials and tribulations that life sends one’s way.

In this episode, No Film School’s GG Hawkins and director Stephen Williams discuss:

  • Growing up in Jamaica and skipping class to go to the movie theater

  • Starting as a PA in a production house in Toronto, Canada

  • Moving to Hawaii to produce and direct episodes of Lost

  • Comparing the role of producer to the role of director

  • A scene in Chevalier, that was like a rap battle, but with violins

  • Selecting collaborators behind the camera with the same care you cast the performers

  • An example of how his collaborators saved him from making a mistake

  • Thinking about the impact his career has on his family

  • How to tell a narrative story about a real person

  • Identifying and connecting to the journey of the main character

You can watch Chevalier in theaters on April 21, 2023.

Melanie Lynskey is opening up about drifting apart from her once-close friend and Heavenly Creatures co-star Kate Winslet.

While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast Thursday about the nature of the industry and how people “move on” following projects, the Yellowjackets actress explained that “When I lost touch with Kate, it was more heartbreaking than some breakups that I’ve had.

“It was so painful because it wasn’t like anything happened, it’s just she became a gigantic international movie star and she didn’t have a lot of time,” she added. “I wouldn’t hear from her, you know, and it just sort of like gradually happened, and it happens in relationships. People kind of drift apart, but it was so painful for me.”

But before their bond even existed and before she had the role of Pauline Parker in the Oscar-nominated film, Lynskey said she already looked up to Winslet because she “set the bar.”

When she initially auditioned for the role, the Togetherness actress said director Peter Jackson showed her Winslet’s audition tape and told her, “This is how good you have to be.” She found it helpful and so once she got the part, she said, “He must have felt like I had done that.”

Although the two haven’t crossed paths much since Heavenly Creatures, except for the premiere of Lynskey’s 2009 film Away We Go, she said Winslet has always been a “huge inspiration” for her. Lynskey especially appreciated “how gracefully she handled” the negative comments about her body image, something that Lynskey has also faced throughout her career.

“She’s like a very, very confident person but … she’s very sensitive and the way she was dissected and talked about, and I remember at the time just being so furious on her behalf,” she explained. “Like Kate Winslet is in the world, Kate Winslet is doing movies and you’re getting to witness that talent. … This is an actor that comes along once in a generation, just focus on that.”

They both have gone on to amass successful careers since their 1994 film, but the Intervention actress explained that her and Winslet’s friendship wasn’t the only one that hit her hard. Lynskey said that it actually “happened a couple of times.”

“I remember one time I did a movie with this actor and when we were finished I said, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m just so happy that I met you and we have this friendship,’ and she was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not friends with actors. I don’t stay friends with actors.’”

While she used to be “so sensitive” about losing relationships in the industry, over time, she learned that was just how it worked. She added, “I was always so injured by losing these, like, great loves I was having and it got easier.”

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Winslet’s team for comment.

Catastrophic super storms, blizzards, droughts, floods, noxious skies, barren lands—they sound like natural disasters, but they’re all the potential consequences of the harm we humans have been doing, and continue to do, to our planet. On Earth Day, we’re encouraged to think about conservation and the actions we can take to help stop or reverse the damage. In that spirit, we’ve put together a list of films to watch that dramatize what might happen should our efforts fail.

Some of these movies take place in a post-apocalyptic future—as envisioned by filmmakers in the recent and not-so-recent past—while others are reflections of our present society. They introduce heroic characters fighting to prevent tragedy, or coping in the midst of it, or surviving in the aftermath. They show us greedy and power-hungry villains who selfishly gobble up resources to improve and preserve their statuses at any cost. These stories serve as warnings about the monsters and other horrors we might unleash if we continue down our current path.

We’ve ranked them based on a highly non-scientific and totally subjective scale, taking into account the overall quality of the film, plus how effectively it addresses the theme of climate disaster. Maybe watching one or more of them will inspire you to do your part to ensure they don’t come to pass. It’s the very least we can do.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin season 2 is officially set to bring back a character from the original series. Pretty Little Liars, which follows a group of teenagers who are being tormented by a killer known only as A, originally ran for seven seasons between 2010 and 2017. Although there have been several spinoffs and reboots of the show in the meantime, the series was most recently rebooted last year for HBO Max as Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, taking on an even more slasher-style genre angle.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

On the official Pretty Little Liars Instagram account, they shared a post celebrating the commencement of production on Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin season 2, which is officially titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

The post also revealed that original Pretty Little Liars star Annabeth Gish will be returning as her character Dr. Anne Sullivan. This will mark the first time that an original cast member has appeared on the reboot series, though several characters have previously been mentioned by name.

Who is Pretty Little Liars’ Dr. Sullivan?

Dr. Sullivan was not present during season 1 of the original series. However, she joined the Pretty Little Liars cast in the first episode of season 2. She would then go on to appear in a total of 9 episodes between 2011 and 2015.

Although she only appeared in a few episodes, Dr. Sullivan looms large over the series. She is a therapist who is brought on to help the girls at the center of the series when their parents worry about their behavior. She proved her ability to help them open up and in fact became the first person on the series to learn A’s true identity.

Dr. Sullivan was last seen in season 6 of the original series, so the new season of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin will be catching up with her after a gap of quite a few years. Her role in the new season is still being kept under wraps, and it is unknown if she will be a recurring character or a guest star. However, it seems likely that she will occupy the same role as the original series, giving the new group of teenagers an adult confidant.

Taylor Swift is throwing it back to one of her most memorable eras.

Only a few weeks after Swift’s “amicable” split from actor Joe Alwyn, the pop star stepped out in New York City with a squad of close friends that included Gigi Hadid, Blake Lively, and all three Haim sisters: Alana, Danielle, and Este. According to Page Six, the posse dropped by the private club and celebrity hot spot Zero Bond for a girls night out. Meaning, in other words, that it simply must be 2016 again.

In the new girl-gang photos (which can be viewed here), Swift is seen at the head of the group wearing a little black dress, black sunglasses, and her signature red lip, while Hadid and Lively rock a more casual vibe in wide-leg, light-wash denim. The Haim sisters, of course, went full Reputation era…or, alternatively, what you might imagine they’d wear in a “No Body, No Crime” music video.

Who else is getting flashbacks of the 1989 tour? The “Bad Blood” music video? Those iconic Fourth of July parties??

The outing comes amid reports that key members of Swift’s inner circle are unfollowing Alwyn en masse, including Hadid and the Haim sisters, as well as Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds and Swift’s brother Austin. Reynolds’s alleged decision to unfollow Joe would be particularly telling given the moving tribute he penned in Alwyn’s honor for last year’s Time 100 list. Right before the unfollowing spree reportedly started, Swift was spotted riding to dinner with Reynolds and Lively in NYC.

After six years of dating, Taylor Swift is reportedly enjoying her freedom when she’s not performing for sold-out arenas on the US leg of her Eras Tour. Given that she’s performing anthems from many periods of her life and career in a single show, it feels incredibly fitting that Swift is choosing to reunite with her iconic gaggle of celebrity besties right now. The squad appeared to dissolve during Swift’s Reputation era and subsequent retreat from the public eye. But evidently, several of Swift’s friendships survived (and perhaps even grew stronger) through the turmoil.

“Knit’s Island,” the sophomore feature by French trio Ekiem Barbier, Guilhem Causse and Quentin L’helgoualc’h, competing in the Burning Lights sidebar at Swiss international doc fest Visions du Reél, has been picked up by Vienna-based film sales company Square Eyes.

It is entirely shot in the online post-apocalyptic world of DayZ, a multiplayer survival video game set in the fictional post-Soviet Republic of Chernarus, where a mysterious plague has turned most of the population into violent zombies.

Under the guise of avatars, the three-member film crew entered this world and made contact with its players. Their goal was to show how the gaming world can be a place where players become part of a strong community, they tell Variety.

“We were really attracted by this story of gamers who get together, who don’t fit this stereotypical individual concept of a gamer,” says L’helgoualc’h. “For many people [outside], this virtual world is linked to an idea of loneliness.

“But we managed to meet these people and found a real family. These players don’t know each other in real life – they’re dispatched around the world – but some of them have been playing together for a long time: they have histories, relationships, there’s a real friendship between them,” he explains.

This is what sets “Knit’s Island” apart from their debut feature, “Marlowe Drive,” also shot within the virtual gaming world.

“[DayZ] is a game that goes against everything we encountered in GTA [Grand Theft Auto] and our previous film. GTA is a game that is deeply consumerist and really based on the imaginary American dream. Here, you simply have to try to survive alone or in a group, to build your cabin in the woods. It’s really the antithesis of what we wanted to explore in ‘Marlowe Drive.’”

The three filmmakers had specific roles inside the game: Barbier was the director/journalist who conducted the interviews with the players, L’helgoualc’h was the main camera operator, assisted by Causse, who was also stage manager. Technically, all three avatars had the possibility of recording their screenshot footage, which offered them a diversity of angles.

At first, the trio roamed the game’s vast 250 km2 space. As they encountered the different characters and got to know them over time, they were eventually able to fix meeting times and places with them. While the start of the film shows mostly role-playing, gradually the characters talk about their lives outside of the game.

“First of all, between them, they are playing a role, and, little by little, all that crumbles down to make room for things a little more intimate. And so, they become this double character: the avatar, with a real person behind it. You start with something that looks like a play, and gradually you meet the people behind these actors,” says Barbier.

Half-way through the shoot, the COVID-19 pandemic hit France. Faced with the prospect of a lockdown, the filmmakers decided to spend it together in a house in southern France and continue shooting their film. This gave them a chance to further explore the thin line between reality and fiction.

“There was a mirror effect that was a bit strange for us, playing in this post-apocalyptic universe, with diseases present in the game, going to get medicine… And the reality that exceeded the fiction,” explains L’helgoualc’h.

Although they didn’t face the contingencies of a real-life shoot, preparation was key as the crew had to deal with the rules of the game, which requires players to have enough food, drink, clothes and medicine.

“The technical challenges were mostly to keep the camera going,” explains Causse. “The camera is an avatar that has needs, like water, meat, and especially medicine so that it doesn’t sneeze, because otherwise the camera moves all the time, it’s a hell of a thing. And if the avatar has lost blood, the camera switches to black and white. So we had to be very careful with that.”

The result is an immersive and existential deep dive into the world of gaming, accessible to all audiences, whether gamers or not.

The CEO of Square Eyes, Wouter Jansen, said of the acquisition: “We’re always looking for films that experiment with the format. Using a videogame as an arena for a film has, of course, been done before, but I don’t remember seeing a documentary where the film team is immersed in the game as characters, thereby revealing the documentary aspect and the dynamics of filming inside an online game.”

“Knit’s Island” is produced by Boris Garavini at Les Films Invisibles. Associate producers are Anna Medveczky and Joachim Herard.

The film has its world premiere at Visions du Reél on April 22. The festival runs April 21 through April 30 in Nyon, Switzerland.

A packed easyJet plane has reportedly had to make an emergency landing on the Algarve after the pilot fell ill.

The co-pilot is said to have landed the aircraft with 100 people on board.

It diverted to Faro in Portugal after taking off from London Gatwick just after 6.30am this morning bound for Agadir in Morocco. It was due to arrive at 9.25am local time.

Online flight trackers are showing the Airbus A320’s unscheduled stop following the mid-air alert.

Leading Portuguese daily Correio da Manha is reporting a Faro airport source has told it the diversion is the result of the pilot suffering an ‘indisposition’.

It said a red alert had been activated and the co-pilot successfully landed the plane.

A passenger who was travelling with 17 others for a ‘two-day’ hen do to Agadir, Morocco, claimed the co-pilot ‘shut’ her finger in the cockpit door which caused a ‘1cm cut’ which wouldn’t stop bleeding.

She told MailOnline: ‘While on board, we noticed the cabin crew running up and down.

‘The co-pilot shut her finger in the cockpit door and had a 1cm cut. As they couldn’t control the bleeding, the pilot made a quick decision to divert to Faro, Portugal.

‘Our friend who is a doctor went to help and said while it wouldn’t stop bleeding it was a bit extreme to land the flight because of this.’

She said passengers then had to wait for another flight from Gatwick, London, to arrive in Faro, to carry on to Agadir.

The passenger, who did not want to be named, said although she was ‘grateful’ for EasyJet rearranging the flight, she was ‘frustrated’ to land in Agadir four hours late because the hen do was cut short.

An EasyJet spokesman said: ‘EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY6469 from London Gatwick to Agadir on 21 April diverted to Faro due to the First Officer requiring medical assistance.

‘The Captain performed a routine landing in accordance with standard operating procedures and the aircraft was met by medical services on arrival in Faro.

‘A replacement crew was arranged and passengers have since continued their journey to Agadir.

‘We apologise for any inconvenience experienced due to the diversion and resulting delay.

‘The safety and well-being of its passengers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority.’

An Aer Lingus passenger jet was forced to make an emergency landing earlier this month in Dublin just minutes after take-off after a flock of pigeons was sucked into the aircraft’s engine.

Firefighters immediately scrambled onto the runway once the aircraft had landed following the bird strike this afternoon.

Passengers reported experiencing major vibrations on the plane after the flock of birds got trapped in the right engine.

And in February this year two British Airways transatlantic flights were forced to make an emergency landing after passengers complained of smoke and a burning smell coming from seats in the business class section.

During the first incident, on February 1, attendants on BA216 from Washington Dulles airport to London had to spray a fire extinguisher on two seats when concerned passengers reported an acrid burning smell just minutes into the eight-hour flight to the UK.

The captain then declared an emergency to air traffic controllers and the plane landed in Halifax, Canada.

All the passengers disembarked the plane normally while fire crews carried out an inspection of the seating area.

Footage shared from passenger on the flight showed fire crews moving through the cabin.

On February 10 this year, another Boeing Dreamliner was involved in a smoke incident, also in the business class section.

Passengers on the flight from Boston to Heathrow had told flight attendants they could smell smoke coming from seat 12A.

The flight was over the Atlantic Ocean and 600 miles from the nearest airport when a decision was made to divert to St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.

It landed almost two hours later with the 106 passengers and crew taken to the terminal while fire fighters carried out an inspection.

Twitter is no longer labeling any accounts as “state-affiliated media” or “government-funded media,” a change that comes after organizations including NPR and PBS objected to the descriptions from the Elon Musk-owned social network and have suspended their activity on Twitter in protest.

According to NPR reporter Bobby Allyn, when he emailed Musk to inquire about the decision to drop media labels, the CEO replied, “This was Walter Isaacson’s suggestion.” Isaacson, who has penned biographies of Steve Jobs and Benjamin Franklin, is working on a book about Musk.

As of this writing, NPR (8.8 million followers) and PBS (2.2 million) have not resumed posting to their Twitter accounts since suspending activity earlier this month.

On Friday, Twitter appeared to have removed all “state-affiliated” and “government-funded” labels from the site, including for accounts operated by NPR, PBS, the BBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC), the Australian Broadcasting Corp. (ABC), Russia Today (RT), China Xinhua News, CGTN (China Global Television Network) and Iran’s Press TV.

Meanwhile, Twitter recently removed “visibility filtering” restrictions on government accounts in Russia, China and Iran at the direction of Musk, NPR reported, citing two anonymous ex-Twitter employees. Those were intended to limit the spread of state-sponsored propaganda from those regimes.

An email sent to Twitter’s PR account asking for comment elicited no response.

The controversy over Twitter’s labels on publicly funded media accounts came after the social network added labels to several organizations that previously didn’t have such an appellation. That included designating NPR’s main account as “US state-affiliated media”; subsequently, Twitter altered that to read “government-funded media.” NPR was not mollified, saying it was suspending Twitter activity because the label “undermine[s] our credibility by falsely implying that we are not editorially independent.” According to NPR, less than 1% of its annual operating budget on average comes from federal grants. PBS followed suit in boycotting Twitter over the “government-funded media” label.

Twitter’s eradication of the “state-affiliated media” and “government-funded media” labels Friday came the day after the social network revoked verified blue check-mark status from thousands of accounts belonging to celebrities, athletes, politicians and other “notable” figures granted under the company’s previous ownership. The move was designed to boost revenue from subscriptions to Twitter Blue ($8/month and up), while Musk has also framed it as democratizing the user-verification process.

Some high-profile users still had the badges following the purge; it wasn’t clear which ones are actually paying Twitter for the badge. Musk said he’s “personally” paying for Twitter Blue on behalf of LeBron James, Stephen King and William Shatner, each of whom had complained about the move to charge for verification.

Emily Ratajkowski graced the cover of the new Vogue Spain issue, where she discussed her dating life and her kiss with Harry Styles.

The 31-year-old model – who was pictured kissing the One Direction singer, 29, last month in Japan – shared how ‘bizarre’ it is for her dating life to be so public.

‘It’s very bizarre to have certain experiences and then have the whole world know and comment on them,’ she said in the interview, as reported by The Sun.

She also touched on the claims that Harry’s ex, House star Olivia Wilde, 39, confronted her over the kiss. ‘That’s how it is. Just an unfortunate issue,’ the model reportedly said.

‘I’m just a person who’s gone from a three-year relationship (with musician Jeff Magid) to a four-year one (with ex-husband Sebastian Bear-McClard). So this is the first time in a long time I’ve been in a dating stage,’ she went on.

‘The interest there is in that particular area is very strange.’

She added, ‘Not that I’m surprised, but it’s a tiny slice of my life.’

The mother-of-one looked incredible on the cover, wearing a skintight black 1999 dress with elbow-length gloves.

Emily’s raven tresses were slicked down under a black headscarf.

Emily and Harry sent shockwaves around the world when they were seen kissing on the streets of Tokyo last month, in a video published exclusively by DailyMail.com.

She previously opened up about the fledgling romance in a chat with the LA Times, saying: ‘There’s a million insane, inaccurate things about my relationships [that are said].’

‘I’m definitely still not thinking about guys. Although, yeah. You know, sometimes things just happen…’

This comes amid the revelation that she has secretly been dating the singer for two months.

Ratajkowski and Bear-McClard were married in a New York courthouse in February 2018 after dating for just two weeks.

The exes split last summer after he allegedly cheated on the model.

Meanwhile, Harry is fresh off his split from girlfriend of two-years Olivia. He starred in her film Don’t Worry Darling which shot in 2020 and premiered last year.

The pair fell in love shortly after her November 2021 split from fiance and baby daddy Jason Sudeikis, 47.

Last month it was reported that Wilde feels ‘betrayed’ by her ‘friend’ Emily – and believes the model broke girl code by hooking up with her ex Harry.

Although Olivia has maintained her silence over the matter, a source with inside detail about the matter tells DailyMail.com exclusively, ‘Olivia and Emily were friends and this is a betrayal.’

However, the insider added that the mother-of-two refuses to let the ‘betrayal’ bring her down and is focusing on moving forward with her life – including getting herself back onto the dating scene.

‘Olivia does not want to be dragged into this mess and she refuses to go backwards in her life,’ the source went on. ‘She is focused on her career and her kids and not giving this any more of he energy.’

Sidharth Malhotra was not offered the lead role in Rowdy Rathore 2

A recent report claims that Sidharth Malhotra was not offered the lead role in the sequel of Rowdy Rathore.

Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore was one of the biggest blockbusters when it first came out. The movie was again in the headlines recently owing to the rumours of a possible sequel. Several reports surfaced claiming that Sidharth Malhotra might be playing the lead. The same was followed by speculations that the actor had refused to star in it due to his commitments towards Indian Police Force. There were also rumours that there won’t be a sequel to the 2012 blockbuster film.

Now in a fresh development, a source has revealed that Sidharth Malhotra was not offered the lead role in the first place.

As per a report by entertainment portal PeepingMoon, while it’s true that Rowdy Rathore 2 is in the process of pre-production and Anees Bazmee of Bhool Bhulaiya 2 fame will be helming it, the cast and other technical details are yet to be formalized. The film is being written at the moment and the producers Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shabina Khan will only make up their mind once the script is materialized. The source stated, “Rowdy Rathore sequel might very likely star Akshay Kumar, and why would anyone think of not casting him? But even he hasn’t been offered the film yet, given that the script is not yet finished.”

The report further claimed that Sidharth Malhotra came to know about the project from his wife Kiara Advani who played the lead in Anees Bazmee’s sequel Bhool Bhulaiya 2. While it’s not clear whether Sidharth Malhotra proposed to play the part but the reports suggesting that Sidharth Malhotra had rejected the role is nothing but speculative. The source alleged, “It’s someone’s PR aggressively spreading false information.”

Meanwhile, Rowdy Rathore 2 is expected to go on floors by mid-next year. The makers are currently engrossed in other projects as of now including an action comedy with Shahid Kapoor and one other film. The source disclosed, “Rowdy Rathore was a huge blockbuster and the makers don’t want to go ahead with the sequel without a proper script with a strong narrative that justifies the first part. The scripting is going on in full swing, and the makers will start approaching actors as soon as the final draft is locked. Akshay Kumar will obviously be their first choice, but only time will tell if the film actually happens with him or someone else.”

Rowdy Rathore, directed by Prabhu Deva, was released in 2012 and featured Akshay Kumar in a dual role alongside Sonakshi Sinha. The storyline centres around Shiva (Akshay Kumar), a petty thief who pretends to be a cop to win over a woman’s heart but finds himself tangled up in a complex conspiracy involving the village he’s in.

Australian satirist Barry Humphries, known for his onstage and TV drag persona Edna Everage and for his character Sir Les Patterson, has died. He was 89.

The BBC reported that Humphries had been in hospital in Sydney, Australia and had been suffering from complications following surgery in March.

“A great wit, satirist, writer and an absolute one-of-kind, he was both gifted and a gift,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said following the news of Humphries’ death.

“RIP Barry Humphries – one of the greatest ever Australians – and a comic genius who used his exuberant alter egos, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, to say the otherwise unsayable. Also an infallibly brilliant Spectator contributor. What a loss,” said former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Twitter.

For his one-person show “Dame Edna: The Royal Tour,” which had a run on Broadway, Humphries received a Special Tony Award for a live theatrical presentation in 2000, and in 2014 “Barry Humphries’ Farewell Tour — Eat, Pray, Laugh!” was nominated for an Olivier Award.

Variety panned “All About Me,” a Broadway show that awkwardly paired Humphries with song man Michael Feinstein in 2010, but declared, “It’s a joy to have Dame Edna Everage back on Broadway, regardless of the indignities she’s forced to suffer in ‘All About Me.’ After umpteen appearances, Barry Humphries’ monstrously funny incarnation of an Australian housewife run amok on fame and flattery still retains its savage wit.”

Edna Everage evolved slowly but got a big boost into the public consciousness of Australians with the release of Aussie cult films “The Adventures of Barry McKenzie” (1972) and 1974 follow-up “Barry McKenzie Holds His Own,” both directed by Bruce Beresford and written by Beresford and Humphries. In addition to the popular character of Barry McKenzie, played by Barry Crocker, the films featured Humphries playing Aunt Edna Everage among other characters.

He appeared as Edna on an episode of “Saturday Night Live” in 1976 and cameo’d as Edna in the 1978 film version of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton.

The performer made many appearances on Australian and American television as Dame Edna, but it was in the solo stage revues in which Humphries appeared as Edna that he really shined, offering acerbic observations on popular culture and just about anything else. Over the years the character evolved from an ordinary housewife to an increasingly glamorous media diva.

Humphries appeared six times as Dame Edna on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” from 2001-11. In recent years he had also appeared in the persona on “The View” (2004 and 2010), “Live With Kelly and Michael” and “The Tony Danza Show” (both 2005), “The Graham Norton Show” in 2008, “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” in 2009

Humphries also appeared in or did voicework for films apart from his turns in his famous personae. In 1991 he played Rupert Murdoch in the miniseries “Selling Hitler,” about the faked Hitler diaries. He played Austrian statesman Klemens von Metternich in the 1994 Beethoven biopic “Immortal Beloved,” appeared in 1997’s “Spice World” as Kevin McMaxford, had a small role in 2002’s “Nicholas Nickleby,” voiced Bruce in hit animated film “Finding Nemo” (2003), served as the narrator for the beloved 2009 animated feature “Mary and Max” and appeared as the Great Goblin in 2012’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”

The actor could boast that he played a fictional character playing a fictional character more than once. He voiced the kangaroo in the 1995 live-action children’s film “Napoleon” and he recurred on “Ally McBeal” in 2001-02 as eccentric lawyer Claire Otoms — in both cases he was credited as Dame Edna Everage.

His persona Les Patterson is described by Humphries as a “priapic and inebriated cultural attaché” who has “continued to bring worldwide discredit upon Australian arts and culture, while contributing as much to the Australian vernacular as he has borrowed from it.”

Humphries made a guest appearance as Sir Les on the arts documentary series “Omnibus” in 1982, and appeared in some of Humphries’ TV movies during the 1980s and ’90s, he appeared as both Edna and Les, as in 1987’s “Les Patterson Saves the World.” In 1997 came “Les Patterson and the Great Chinese Takeaway.”

From 1987-89 Humphries had his own satiric talk show on the U.K.’s ITV, “The Dame Edna Experience,” in which he occasionally appeared as Patterson.

John Barry Humphries was born in Kew, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Often left to his own devices as a childhood, he played dressed up by himself. “Disguising myself as different characters and I had a whole box of dressing up clothes,” he once said, “Red Indian, sailor suit, Chinese costume, and I was very spoiled in that way … I also found that entertaining people gave me a great feeling of release, making people laugh was a very good way of befriending them. People couldn’t hit you if they were laughing.”

At Melbourne University, he began appearing in revues and doing impersonations. He first appeared as Mrs. Norm Everage in a stage sketch at the campus’ Union Theatre in December 1955. He revived the character for a performance at Philip Street Revue Theatre after moving to Sydney.

In September 1957 Humphries appeared as Estragon in Australia’s first production of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” at a Melbourne theater.

He made his screen debut in Australia on the ABC (Australia Broadcasting Corp.) program “Wild Life and Christmas Belles” but began his TV career in earnest after moving in 1959 to London. There he became friends with some of the most influential figures on the British comedy scene, including Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Alan Bennett, Jonathan Miller and Spike Milligan.

Humphries was in the original West End production of Lionel Bart’s musical “Oliver!,” creating the role of Mr. Sowerberry and reprising it when the production moved to Broadway in 1963.

A still-early version of the Edna Everage persona was seen in 1966 on the BBC’s “The Late Show,” for which Humphries and future Monty Python members Michael Palin and Terry Jones wrote. Humphries also recurred on the BBC’s Dudley Moore-Peter Cook TV series “Not Only.. But Also” in the late ’60s. Humphries made an appearance as Edna Everage on David Frost talkshow “Frost on Sunday” in 1969.

In the 1967 film “Bedazzled,” a comic fantasy directed by Stanley Donen and starring Dudley Moore, Peter Cook (as the devil) and Raquel Welch (as Lust), Humphries played one of the embodied sins, Envy. (The film was remade in 2000 with Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley.) The actor also had a supporting role the following year in the Shirley MacLaine vehicle “The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom.”

Humphries got his own, five-episode BBC show in 1970, “Barry Humphries Scandals,” in which he appeared as Mrs. Norm Everage as well as other characters.

In addition to Edna Everage and Les Patterson, Humphries also created the satirical character Barry McKenzie, a typical Australian bloke who started off as the hero of a comic strip about Australians in London (Nicholas Garland did the drawings) first published in Private Eye magazine. The jokes not infrequently centered on the consequences of drinking.

The actor was firmly set on his career path thanks to the two Australians films that centered on McKenzie as portrayed by Barry Crocker. In 1972’s “The Adventures of Barry McKenzie” and 1974 follow-up “Barry McKenzie Holds His Own,” both directed by a young Bruce Beresford and written by Beresford and Humphries, the actor played Aunt Edna Everage and other characters in what are enduring cult classics in Australia.

As a host of the Royal Pop Concert in Buckingham Palace on June 4, 2002, Humphries appeared as Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson and was privileged to announce Queen Elizabeth II.

He won a lifetime achievement award at the British Comedy Awards in 1999 and the Sir Peter Ustinov Award at the Banff Television Festival in 1997.

Among other honors in his native Australia, Humphries was depicted in a set of five 50¢ postage stamps in the Australian Legends series issued in January 2006. One stamp had a photograph of Humphries without makeup; the others depicted how his alter ego Edna Everage changed over the years.

Humphries was married four times, the first time to Brenda Wright from 1955-57, the second to Rosalind Tong from 1959-70, the third to Diane Millstead from 1979-89.

He is survived by fourth wife Lizzie Spender, to whom he had been married since 1990; two daughters from Tong, actress Tessa Humphries and Emily; and two sons from Millstead, journalist Oscar Humphries and Rupert Humphries.

With his future in the franchise in question amid assault charges, Jonathan Majors is still being featured in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania marketing.

Majors made unfortunate headlines at the end of March after he was arrested and charged with assault. This comes as the actor’s MCU character, Kang the Conqueror, is being primed to be the next big bad in the franchise, with a number of appearances planned over the next decade.

Marvel Studios has not made anything public about Major’s legal troubles, but they are reportedly “discussing potential options going forward.”

Upon the news of his arrest breaking, the Quantumania actor was quickly dropped by the US Army as a part of its latest round of television advertising.

Jonathan Majors Makes MCU Appearance Amid Assault Charge

Marvel Studios

Despite having recently been arrested and currently being under investigation for assault, Kang actor Jonathan Majors was featured in a newly-released trailer promoting the digital release of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

The short spot features a number of shots of Major’s Multiversal villain, including the text “A NEW DYNASTY BEGINS” in reference to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in which Majors will seemingly be a key player.

The move to include the actor some as a surprise as the investigation into his recent assault charges remains ongoing.

Majors’ attorney remains adamant that the MCU star has “disavowed any allegations.” However, he has been dropped from a number of brand deals as of late because of the ongoing legal battle.

What Will Marvel Do with Jonathan Majors?

With Jonathan Majors swamped in these legal troubles, Marvel Studios finds itself in a troubling spot.

The Hollywood giant made a significant investment in the actor, one that was only just getting started.

Despite reports saying there have been “zero conversations” about recasting the Kang actor in the MCU, it seems unrealistic for Marvel to at least be exploring contingencies just in case.

Insider Jeff Snider recently revealed he heard Marvel Studios had at least the type of actor in mind if they were to move on from Majors.

With everything up in the air, no the studio does not need to make any public declarations about the future of Jonathan Majors; however, it might be smart – from a public perception standpoint – to keep the actor away from the marketing of projects at least until a verdict is rendered.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods proved to be a massive disappointment at the box office, and Warner Bros. Discovery seems to think James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DCU reboot may be to blame.

As Gunn and Safran chart course to launch the first projects in Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the final projects of the old DC regime continue to trickle out, with Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 padding out this year’s slate.

Kicking off the year was Fury of the Gods, which suffered the worst DCEU opening ever, even coming in below Birds of Prey, which released right as the COVID-19 pandemic was kicking off in 2020.

Director David F. Sandberg reacted to the disappointment as he shared his shock at Shazam 2‘s negative reviews and his lack of surprise at the sequel’s poor box office results, revealing it was somewhat expected.

WB Blames James Gunn’s Reboot for Shazam 2 Failure

DC

According to a report from The Wrap, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) may be blaming the box office disappointment of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, at least partially, on James Gunn’s upcoming DCU reboot.

The sequel was projected for a $35 to $38 million domestic opening – already far below the $53.5 million of 2019’s Shazam – but ultimately left its March 17 first weekend with just $30.5 million domestic and $65.5 million worldwide.

The Wrap’s sources claim reaching the $35 million projection would have been taken as a reasonable outcome for WBD. But the studio thinks Gunn’s upcoming reboot dipped “general audience interest” in Shazam 2 and the existing universe.

That being said, the studio is said to believe Gunn and Peter Safran’s new rebooted projects will be able to overcome this hurdle when it gets underway – with the first release said to be coming to Max in 2024.

By Sunday, April 9, four weekends into its box office run, the movie was sitting at just $56.6 million domestic. By contrast, at the same period of time into its 2019 run, Shazam had grossed $131.2 million, roughly 2.3 times the amount.

Fury of the Gods was reportedly made on a $100 million production budget, and with a current worldwide total of $128.6 million, the movie is currently looking at a major loss once theaters take their cuts and other costs are factored in.

2019’s Shazam performance was already nothing insane with a $367.3 million worldwide box office, but still, according to Deadline, managed to turn a profit of around $74 million as it was made on a relatively low budget.

Will DC’s Other 2023 Movies Flop Too?

Warner Bros. DC Superhero Movies
DC

With James Gunn’s upcoming DCU reboot now being common knowledge after the ten-project slate announcement, expectations were low going into Shazam 2. This was only further hindered by a minimal and lackluster marketing campaign that even resorted to spoiling the sequel’s Wonder Woman cameo by the end.

DC still has three projects left from the old regime to release this year – The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 – and one has to wonder whether they will face similar struggles to Shazam 2 if the upcoming reboot is indeed a hindrance.

Reports from test screenings have already indicated Aquaman 2 may be a “boring” downgrade from the billion-dollar 2019 original. In an age where quality and word of mouth continue to impact audience turnout, combined with the reboot factor and the Amber Heard controversy, Aquaman 2 may face a flop too.

Warner Bros. Discovery essentially left Shazam 2 out to dry with minimal effort placed into its marketing, and one has to wonder whether Aquaman 2 may see the same treatment. Although that movie may receive slightly more favor as it tries to capitalize on its Christmas release and replicate the original’s massive box office.

The Flash has a big leg-up at the box office in being a massive event movie that features both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s Batmen. As this is a Multiverse movie in an age where those are all the rage, combined with setting up the reboot and apparently being the best DC movie since The Dark Knight trilogy, it’s easy to see The Flash becoming the blue brand’s biggest hit of the year.

On the other end of the spectrum, Blue Beetle appears to be a far smaller movie that will introduce a brand-new hero to the DCU. There has even been talk that this may be the first movie in the rebooted DC universe, if that becomes part of Blue Beetle‘s marketing after The Flash provides that reset, it could perform well.

Even listening to James Gunn’s DCU Chapter 1 slate announcement video, the filmmaker only had some offhanded comments to offer about Shazam 2 and Aquaman 2, meanwhile, he praised both The Flash and Blue Beetle as “fantastic [films],” suggesting they may see more favor internally at the studio.

What Happens If James Gunn’s DC Reboot Fails?

James Gunn, Justice League, DC
DC

Once DC concludes its 2023 slate with Aquaman 2 in December, it won’t have another superhero blockbuster until James Gunn kicks off his slate properly in 2025 with Superman: Legacy – except for Joker 2, although that’s perhaps the furthest thing from a traditional comic book movie.

Taking a break in 2024 ought to help serve as a reset in the eyes of the fans, so it’s clear when the DCU properly gets underway in 2025 that it’s a new universe. With the animated Max series Creature Commandos set to arrive in 2024 as the first entry in the DCU, perhaps that will help serve as a transition between universes.

But one has to wonder, what if Superman: Legacy ultimately flops when it finally arrives in 2025 to kick the DCU into action? Well, that would certainly be a signal that the brand damage done to DC over the years with disappointing movies and an incohesive franchise plan may be too severe to fix with just a reboot.

If Gunn’s Superman and subsequent DCU movies were to flop, perhaps the only option would be to give up on a connected universe for the blue brand, at least for a while, until fans can forget the past. But one can only hope that won’t be what happens and this begins a prosperous new era for DC.

Will Zachary Levi’s Shazam Survive the DC Reboot?

Zachary Levi Shazam DC
DC

Zoning back in on Zachary Levi’s Shazam after the disappointment of Fury of the Gods, one can only wonder if he will survive the reboot. Well, Gunn and Safran’s DC opted to leave in two post-credits scenes that set up a future for Shazam, which certainly seems like a good sign, especially after The Flash apparently cut two superheroes from its ending in a scene to tease a continuation.

Levi’s DC hero future may be saved by how Safran, one of the co-CEOs of DC Studios, is a close friend of the actor, even spending a vacation together. Not to mention, the DC boss served as a producer on both Shazam movies, and with Gunn’s Suicide Squad-related characters seemingly safe going into the reboot, perhaps the same will be true for those under Safran.

Nonetheless, it’s currently too soon to tell what the fate of Shazam will be, perhaps Levi will eventually have to release a similar statement to The Rock after Black Adam failed, confirming he won’t be returning. If so, with Shazam being a fairly major character in DC, it wouldn’t be a shock to see a new actor showing up in the suit in the not-too-distant future.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes to streaming on May 23, with the DC flick set to launch with Warner Bros. Discovery’s new service Max.

WTMG’s Leo Faria: “In the grand echelon of modern bullet hell shooters, R-Type Final 3 Evolved is still one of the most advanced and featured-filled games available right now, but as a game only available on the PS5, supposedly taking advantage of what that hardware has to offer? Yeah, I don’t see the point. It’s barely better performing than its predecessor, sometimes featuring framerate hiccups not even R-Type Final 2 had. I don’t see why this wasn’t a cross-gen title, since its exclusivity will do nothing but hinder its sales. It’s still a good shooter, don’t get me wrong, but I expected more from it. This isn’t what I expect from the next generation of the genre.”

WTMG's Leo Faria: "In the grand echelon

Editors note: This review was originally published June 10, 2022 after its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival. The film opens in theaters today.

Although Ray Romano has dabbled in writing quite a bit, including a series he created called Men of a Certain Age, the star (best known for the Emmy-winning sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, which certainly contained lots of material drawn from his own life and family experiences) is moving to the big screen with perhaps his most ambitious project yet. The film, Somewhere In Queens, draws its comedy and drama from a very somewhat overbearing but likeable and recognizable Italian American family.

Again Romano is borrowing from his own life, in this case his wife’s family in particular for the script he co-wrote with Mark Stegemann. This time he not only writes but also directs, produces and stars as Leo Russo, married to Angela (Laurie Metcalf) and bringing up a son, “Sticks” (Jacob Ward), whose talent for hoops in high school makes Dad proud especially when his son gets the unexpected opportunity to play college ball on a scholarship — a surprise since he was planning to skip college and go straight into the family construction business run by Leo’s father (Tony Lo Bianco) and where his brother (Sebastian Maniscalco) works. Trouble starts however when Sticks’ spirited girlfriend (Sadie Stanley) suddenly breaks up with him, an act he takes so hard it upends his basketball plans, something Leo is determined to go to great lengths to get back on track. This leads to not the best decisions, and lots of family strife.

Romano has crafted a film, which debuted at the Tribeca Festival, that walks a fine line between comedy and drama, sometimes getting very heavy. He shows a good degree of directorial skill in not letting it careen out of control once Leo’s plans start to blow up in his face. It is hard enough to just direct a film, but for his first Romano has also given himself one of his most challenging roles as a guy who clearly loves his family but nearly loses it all. Although like much of his past work this film about a family from Queens (just like Romano’s) offers some very funny stuff; it feels authentic in showing off a vocal and vibrant Italian American family who sometimes just get too much on each other’s nerves. They are loud and loving, and they actually have conversations around the dinner table believe it or not. In that way, the Russos feel comfortably old fashioned, and Romano definitely knows the territory.

He is lucky to have put together such a talented cast. Metcalf (who gets a classic final line in the film) is incapable of hitting a false note, even when things turn highly dramatic. Her Angela is a loving mom, fearful for her own future and that of her family who nevertheless holds them all together even as her husband teeters on the edge of calamity. Ward is understated and terrific as a kid who is somewhat fragile, and not really sure he wants what his dad insists is good for him. Lo Bianco and Maniscalco are fine as well in less defined roles they still make engaging. Stanley is a real firecracker as the girlfriend, and Jennifer Esposito makes the most of a role of an attractive neighbor who might be too much of a temptation for Leo is his worst moments.

Producers are Albert Berger and Rox Yerxa (Little Miss Sunshine, Nebraska) along with Romano and Stegemann. The film is looking for distribution, and based on the impressive results of Romano’s directorial debut I would say it shouldn’t be a problem finding the right place for it to land.

Following confirmation Thursday that Alec Baldwin will no longer face criminal charges in the death of Halyna Hutchins, the family of the Rust cinematographer will press ahead with a civil suit against Baldwin, who was holding the prop gun that fired the bullet killing Hutchins on set in October 2021.

Lawyer Gloria Allred, who represents Hutchins’ mother Olga Solovey, her father Anatolii Androsovych, and sister Svetlana Zemko, said Friday her clients “remain hopeful”, asserting:

“Mr Baldwin may pretend that he is not responsible for pulling the trigger and ejecting a live bullet which ended Halyna’s life. He can run to Montana and pretend that he is just an actor in a wild west movie but, in real life, he cannot escape from the fact that he had a major role in a tragedy which had real life consequences.”

Baldwin’s lawyers called their action “misguided” and unlikely to survive legal scrutiny. Baldwin, as both star and producer of the film, previously reached a deal with Hutchins’ widower, the details of which remain private, but which include the latter becoming a named exec producer on the film, which has now resumed production in Montana.

Director Joel Souza made a statement, calling the move “bittersweet” and vowed to finish the film “on Halyna’s behalf.” No “working firearms” or ammunition are allowed on set for the film, expected to wrap in May.

Baldwin had been due to appear in court May 3rd for a preliminary hearing, but the charges were withdrawn on Thursday, following prosecutors’ receipt of “other information.” The film’s armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, remains charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
