It’s time to see beauty through Vanessa Lee’s eyes.

The Things We Do founder has built a loyal following thanks to her less-is-more approach to aesthetics.

With a newly opened West Hollywood, California location joining her three Los Angeles studios and Hawaii outpost, the cosmetic RN and Eastern Face Reader has become a trusted beauty expert for clients including Khloé, Kourtney, and Kim Kardashian, Jessica Alba, Gabrielle Union, and Kate Hudson.

And if there’s one piece of advice she’d give beauty lovers right now, it’s simple: think twice before rushing into cosmetic surgery.

“Stop messing with your eyes. We have seen celebrities that have access to the best and most expensive surgeons get work done and it really changes the essence of the face. If you are in your 50s and need to remove excess skin, that is one thing but getting an upper bleph in your 30s and 40s and altering the shape of your eye completely may leave you with regrets in a couple of years,” she tells ET.

Instead of chasing dramatic transformations, Lee recommends enhancing what you already have.

One treatment she’s especially excited about?

“The BioGlow treatment, where we combine Sculptra under the hairline with PRFM under the eyes and shadows around the mouth in one treatment is hot right now and completely worth the hype. The results are undeniable,” she notes.

For those looking for an added lift and rejuvenation, Lee points to options that deliver subtle effects while supporting long-term skin health.

“The Things We Do has very rigorous, Korean-influenced training for threads for subtle lifting and collagen building,” she explains.

And her recommendations don’t stop at the face.

“We’re seeing a lot of requests for Onda Pro body tightening this summer for skin tightening and contouring.”

Of course, maintaining great skin starts long before your next appointment.

“Everyone needs a sunscreen stick or brush-on in their bag. You are not reapplying enough, and it shows at your fall appointments. I like the brush-on from Colorescience and my favorite drug-store brand sunscreen stick is from Sun Bum, SPF 40. It glides on smoothly, doesn’t leave a greasy residue, and it feels very refreshing on the skin.”

She also swears that some of the best beauty secrets can be found right in your kitchen.

“I love jujube and longan tea for reducing inflammation and building iron. I have this tea almost daily and it is so delicious. Sardines are having a moment, which is awesome, because they are a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for both health and beauty. I love mine in tomato sauce or with some olive oil and crushed red pepper flakes.”

SpaceX, Elon Musk’s rocket maker and artificial intelligence company, set a price for its initial public offering on Wednesday of $135, which would value it at $1.77 trillion and crown it the largest I.P.O. ever.

At that price, SpaceX would raise $74.4 billion from the offering, and its valuation would be more than 40 percent higher than the $1.25 trillion that it valued itself at in February. The current I.P.O. record is held by Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil company, which was valued at $1.7 trillion and raised more than $29 billion when it went public in 2019.

Most companies that go public set a preliminary price range for their stock offering before settling on a final number in case investor demand for their shares changes. But Mr. Musk and SpaceX sidestepped that and simply declared one price for investors. SpaceX could still change that price but is not expected to do so. It is likely to begin trading on the Nasdaq next week under the ticker symbol SPCX.

At $74.4 billion raised, SpaceX’s I.P.O. would be just about “more than every U.S. I.P.O. combined in the last two years,” said Matthew Kennedy, a senior I.P.O. market strategist at Renaissance Capital.

A SpaceX spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

SpaceX’s I.P.O. is a bellwether for other expected offerings that are set to be enormous, including from OpenAI and Anthropic, the artificial intelligence companies. Anthropic confidentially filed to go public on Monday, and OpenAI is expected to file in the coming weeks. Both start-ups have valuations approaching $1 trillion. The three offerings could unleash an avalanche of wealth across Silicon Valley and Wall Street, creating new corporate titans in the process.

Among the biggest winners would be Mr. Musk, 54, who is already the world’s richest man. At $135 a share, the roughly 50 percent stake in SpaceX that he controls would be worth just over $752 billion. (Mr. Musk cannot sell some of the SpaceX shares he controls until the company hits various operational milestones, according to the firm’s filings.)

A large increase in the company’s share price in its first days of trading could turn Mr. Musk into the world’s first trillionaire.

Mr. Musk, who founded SpaceX in 2002, has remade the space race with partly reusable rockets and transformed communication with the company’s satellite internet service, Starlink. In February, SpaceX bought his A.I. company, xAI, which owned his social media platform, X, creating a conglomerate of the tech billionaire’s various interests. Mr. Musk separately runs the electric carmaker Tesla, as well as other companies.

He has used SpaceX as a kind of piggy bank over the last two decades, securing loans from the company to himself and relying on the firm to shore up several troubled businesses in his orbit. That was enabled partly because of Mr. Musk’s iron grip on SpaceX. He controls more than 85 percent of its shareholder votes because of a class of super-voting shares, according to the company’s filings.

SpaceX, which has contracts with NASA and other federal agencies, had long been something of a financial mystery. Last month, the company revealed a full picture of its financial health for the first time in an I.P.O. prospectus. The company reported that it had lost more than $4.9 billion last year, compared with a $791 million profit in 2024 because of increased expenditures on A.I. Revenue was $18.7 billion last year, up 33 percent from the previous year.

The company plans to use the money it raises from its I.P.O. to fund various moonshots, including Mr. Musk’s goals of putting A.I. data centers into orbit, building a lunar factory and eventually sending humans to Mars.

(The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft in 2023, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems. The two companies have denied those claims.)

Nicolas Owens, an equity researcher with the investment research firm Morningstar, said that while SpaceX’s I.P.O. was enormous, he would not be surprised if “the records are broken more than once.” Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have become larger than ever before going public.

“A trillion-dollar market capitalization for a company going public used to be unheard-of,” he said, using a term to describe a company’s valuation. “Now it seems normal.”

SpaceX, Elon Musk’s rocket maker and artificial

Despite what the song says, sometimes it’s not only the first but also the second, third or even fourth cut that is the deepest. Film and television editors hold an incredible amount of power in not what only the audience ultimately sees but also in shaping maximum story impact.

As part of Netflix’s FYSEE LA festival, Deadline moderated a “Fix It in Post” panel at the streamer’s L.A. Crafts Hub, the Teatro Roma, with panelists Stranger Things’ supervising sound editor Craig Henighan and editor Dean Zimmerman, Beef Season 2 editor Lauren Connelly and Nobody Wants This Season 2 editor David Dean.

It’s a no-brainer that collaborating with your show’s creator is of the utmost importance, however, what happens when an editor suggests something that the showrunner hadn’t even thought of? The answer in most cases is a respectful improvement of vision and tone for the audience and the storyline.

Zimmerman and Henighan, who have been working on Stranger Things with the Duffer brothers for the entirety of the series’ nine-year, five-season run, had an incredibly trusting relationship with one another in the edit bay.

“In my experience, and for the Duffer brothers, they write very tight scripts and are very specific on how they want their tones. The interesting thing is in Season 1, when we first started, it was all about the drama. Everything was super intense, and kept you on the edge of your seat,” Zimmerman explained. “And there was a scene in particular that I decided to cut as a comedy instead of a drama, and when I showed it to them, they freaked out and didn’t know what to do. And the one thing they did say was, ‘Now we have to go back and rewrite all the scripts to put more comedy into it.’”

Zimmerman continued: “You know what I said to them? Obviously through all the years that I’ve been working in this business, I was like, you need to have those moments of levity, and you need to have those moments where you can let the audience sit back before you punch them in the face with something super scary or super dramatic and it’s something they learned very quickly. That was a big tonal shift in Season 1 that then carried out throughout the rest of the seasons. So, when you talk about tone with them, it all stems from the writing. But that flexibility that we all have in the cutting room is to create something completely different than what’s on the page.”

When it came to controlling the Vecna-Demogorgon showdown at the MAC-Z through sound and music, Henighan said: “We think about things like, where to pull sound down. What if we did this scene without music? And I think we can all agree about the music as a big conversational point. [But it can’t be something like] I’ve just been hearing music for 20 minutes. I really need the music [to serve a purpose] and kick in for an emotional thing or it’s not as impactful.”

He continued. “Working with the Duffers and Dean has been very strategic to lay off the music [when we don’t need it.] And that scene at the MAC-Z, we orchestrated the guns, the demogorgons and the other stuff to figure out where we need the music, but as a minimal pulse first and then it can bloom into something.”

Giving advice to other editors to listen to their instincts in post-production and find common ground with their showrunners, Zimmer said, “Sometimes we need to take that liberty and freedom to better the show instead of [taking] the marching orders of, ‘I’m here to do this and that and that’s it.’ It’s about having the license to take that freedom and risk to do [your thing]. That’s what separates a good show from a great show.”

When it comes to the romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This, Dean has the challenge of balancing levity with naturalism in the whipcrack improvisations that can sometimes occur between lead cast members Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. “I joined in Season 2,” Dean explained. “The first season was set up wonderfully for me by those editors. And our creator, Erin Foster, always leans into making the show feel lived in, real and messy – [through things like] overlapping conversations. That’s something that we’re always building in keeping that familiar pace when people are together. And even though it’s a comedy, it’s funny, but it’s not silly. So, a lot of the time we’ll modify things granularly in that regard.”

Dean also added: “Kristen Bell is a pro and her chemistry with Adam Brody is great and [the rest of the cast] all give a good amount of range, so you can get into the minutia with the teeth of all their performances, but they also riff a lot and they are all so funny that they can go on forever. Meanwhile, back in Video Village, half of the people are just bent over laughing and the other half are [jokingly sighing] like, ‘Come on, we’re trying to make a 25-minute show.’”

As the editor for Beef, Connelly has her work cut out for her. Though the anthology series primarily focuses on themes of revenge or manipulation and the pressures of living under capitalism, there’s a lot of dark humor to be found in the undercurrent.

“Sonny [Beef creator, writer, showrunner and EP Lee Sung Jin], really has a singular voice. And what we talk about a lot at the beginning of the editing process is perspective, character and scene structure,” Connelly shares. “And by focusing on those things, it really does help us balance the tone. Because these actors are incredible, the writing is incredible and in this season we have a huge ensemble – we really have to get to know pretty much four different couples and all of their motivations, everything they’re going for and [how they navigate] all these absurd situations and knowing who each scene is supposed to be about [for focus] is really key for us. That way, we can utilize that to balance the tone of each individual scene and what we need to get out of it, and that’s something we talk about a lot.”

To learn more about how they crafted scene stealing moments and let their leading actors guide editing choices alongside sharing secrets about what’s been left on the editing floor, watch the video above.

Love Island USA‘s Vasana Montgomery is speaking out for the first time since being removed from the villa amid a racism scandal.

“I want to address a couple videos from my teen years that have recently resurfaced,” she wrote via her Instagram Story on Wednesday, June 3. “In those videos, I used a racial slur. I am embarrassed and disappointed by my words.”

Vasana noted that she wanted to take accountability for her actions.

“I take full responsibility for what I said and understand why it has hurt and upset people,” she continued. “Since then, I have grown a lot as a person and taken the time to educate myself, listen, learn, and better understand the impact that language can have.”

Love Island USA returned for season 8 — minus one contestant — but did Vasana Montgomery appear in the premiere before her exit? The popular dating show returned on Tuesday, June 2, with contestants Aniya Harvey, Beatriz Hatz, Bryce Alakai Dettloff, Gabriel Vasconcelos, KC Chandler, Mackenzie “Kenzie” Annis, Melanie Moreno, Sincere Rhea, Sean Reifel, Trinity […]

She added: “That growth does not erase my mistake, and 1am not asking anyone to excuse it. I believe people should be held accountable for their actions, but I also believe in growth, learning, and becoming better. To anyone I hurt or disappointed, I am truly sorry.”

Vasana was cut from season 8 of Love Island USA after resurfaced social media posts showed her using a slur. Vasana was removed from the show before she got a chance to enter the villa. Both clips were leaked from her private social media, which meant producers weren’t privy to the posts while casting the season.

The Peacock dating show has previously weathered similar issues with Islanders when Yulissa Escobar left days into the experience in season 7 after clips of her using racial slurs on a podcast circulated online.

Cierra Ortega also faced backlash when a resurfaced social media post showed her using a slur. She was pulled from the villa and later issued an apology for her posts.

“Now that I’ve been back in the U.S. for about 48 hours and I’ve had the chance to process, I now feel like I’m at a space where I can speak about this without being highly emotional because I am not the victim in the situation,” Cierra said in an Instagram video in July 2025. “While I was in the villa, there were some posts that resurfaced from my past where I was very naively using an incredibly offensive and derogatory term. I want to first start by addressing not just anyone that I have hurt or deeply offended — but most importantly — the entire Asian community.
I am deeply, truly, honestly, so sorry.”

Cierra admitted she didn’t know she was using a slur at the time.

“I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm and came with the history that it did or I never would have used it. I had no ill intention when I was using it but that’s absolutely no excuse because intent doesn’t excuse ignorance.
It just doesn’t,” she noted. “I just need you to know that I am so sorry — but this is not an apology video. This is an accountability video. I do want to hold my hands up and say that I take accountability for using the word, but I do want it to be known that I genuinely had no idea that it was a slur. I had no idea of its meaning.”

After leaving the villa, Cierra said she found the online backlash “very hard to deal with,” adding, “I can do my best to drown out the noise and pay attention to the truth. But what’s been extremely, extremely difficult is the way people are approaching my family and my loved ones. They have had ICE called on them. My family doesn’t feel safe in their own home.
I’m receiving death threats and there’s no need to fight hate with hate. I don’t think that that’s justice. If you want to know that you are heard and that I’m sorry and that I will move differently, I promise you that’s what will happen.”

Cierra promised to take the necessary steps to grow from the experience.

“I know that no apology could ever be enough for the harm that I’ve caused and the offense that’s taken place. I know that moving forward my actions and how I decide to live my life from here on out is going to speak louder than any apology ever could,” she said. “But I do need it to be known that I am sorry and I did mean no harm. Hopefully there are people out there that can use my mistake as a learning moment and to just be better because that’s what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna take today and tomorrow and I’m gonna take strides to be better.”

Love Island USA‘s Vasana Montgomery is speaking

What will today’s kids think of He-Man, the muscle-bound ’80s relic with the most iconic bob after Anna Wintour? Launched in an era where machismo meant a goofy wrestler or metal singer with an eight-octave falsetto, the steroidal beskirted barbarian has always been a bit ridiculous. C’mon, his name is He-Man. What in the testosterone is that?

And so, director Travis Knight (“Bumblebee”) has made his reboot of “Masters of the Universe” a dopey, friendly comedy about modern masculinity in crisis with a He-Man who openly wonders what kind of a man to be. Hurtled out of the kingdom of Eternia as a boy, this Prince Adam (a terrifically game Nicholas Galitzine) came of age in Oklahoma City as a sweet guy who happens to be obsessed with swords. Instead of transforming into the strongest man in the galaxy to protect his throne from the evil duo of Skeletor (voiced by Jared Leto) and Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie), earthbound Adam parries HR complaints while sitting behind a desk plate that labels his gender identity not as He-Man but He/Him.

Times have changed. Even He-Man’s talking pet tiger (Tom Wilton) asks for consent before giving him a lick.

Galitzine’s He-Man is more Clark Kent than Superman, a gentle, funny, under-estimated dweeb. On a blind date, his descriptions of magical griffins and burning deserts sound humiliatingly immature. Dumped before dessert, he sulks home where his bro-y roommate (Christian Vunipola) secretly watches the weepie “The Notebook” when no one is looking as the soundtrack spins an acoustic cover of the Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry.” Every man in this movie has a public persona and a private one. Even Adam’s irritable female boss, Suzie (Sasheer Zamata), hides under a people-pleasing mask. “This is my mega-serious face,” she says with an unnerving grin.

The performances are good; the plot, postcard-sized: Adam returns to Eternia, unleashes his alter-identity He-Man and wrestles with the pressure to live up to his new biceps. Although Adam must rescue his royal parents (James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley) from Skeletor, he reaches for empathy before a blade. Could Skeletor really be that bad, he asks his childhood friend Teela (Camila Mendes). “He has a skull for a face,” Teela insists. In this world, everyone’s measured against their looks.

Here’s another question: Could Skeletor really be Jared Leto? Physically, of course not. Skeletor is all pixels with a clattering jaw perfect for chewing the scenery. (The bully is especially hilarious when the story transplants him to an ordinary weight-lifting gym — call him Skele-Chad.) Leto’s grumbling Brit-inflected baritone is an unrecognizable concoction of trilled r’s and plummy vowels — and the best performance he’s done in years. With apologies to Bette Midler, you should hear the gravitas Leto brings to calling his minions “the buttworms beneath my feet.”

Yes, that’s the humor level of the dialogue. Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee and Dave Callaham have written a heavy-handed script in which, when Castle Grayskull comes under attack, Idris Elba’s soldier is forced to yell, “We’re under attack!” You know, in case the exploding laser beams weren’t obvious.

Obviousness is this film’s handicap — and the main joke. In this movie’s lore, juvenile Adam, played by an adorable Artie Wilkinson-Hunt, is the guilty child who invented his meathead He-Man moniker, as well the nicknames of his allies Ram-Man, Mekaneck and Fisto, who all look exactly as they sound to their chagrin. “I don’t fist anyone,” Fisto (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson) protests. The grown-ups in the audience snicker.

Knight was a kid himself when the cartoon version of “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” debuted on television. As with his “Transformers” spin-off “Bumblebee,” he makes movies like a child who loves taking his action figures out of the box and giving them a silly soul.

He’s no hack: Knight’s debut film, “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was nominated for an Academy Award for animation. Raised with an affection for brands (his father, Phil Knight, is the co-founder of Nike), he also feels obliged to include so much fan service for his generation that kids will have to swashbuckle through confusing callbacks to discover He-Man for themselves. One battle scene is scored to 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” simply as a nod to a He-Man mash-up video that went viral back in 2005, a clash as wonky as it sounds. Yet Daniel Pemberton’s opening theme music is a rousing crescendo of stadium rock synthesizers. You can hear Queen guitarist Brian May in the score — not merely as an influence. It’s actually him.

Culturally, hyper-machismo has oscillated from cool to lame to ironically cool and back again for decades. Even Queen itself was deemed lame until “Wayne’s World” resurrected “Bohemian Rhapsody” as headbanging slapstick. If you spot a guy swaggering like a brute from Eternia on the sidewalk, masked or not, he probably thinks he’s more awesome than everyone else does. Likewise, when He-Man smashes skulls to a wailing metal soundtrack, I no longer know if I’m meant to be snickering with the electric guitars or at them. Neither does the movie, which seems to decide each scene’s individual tone on a coin flip.

Frankly, the dorky version of Adam is more fun than the heroic He-Man, even with Knight hammering us every minute to laugh that he’s a total weakling. Galitzine embraces the indignity. Zooming through the air in a flying Sky-Sled, he wedges his face into a triple chin. Dazed and enthusiastic, Galitzine’s human charm counterbalances Eternia’s synthetic feel, a blandscape of bright forests and cliffside dungeons that looks dated — not to 1983 but to last decade’s greenscreen-heavy would-be fantasy franchises like “Clash of the Titans” and “John Carter.”

Please don’t make Galitzine do five of these movies, even though he’s very good. An unusually pretty leading man who is quirkier and funnier than he looks, Galitzine is the kind of rising talent Hollywood rarely knows how to handle. In his previous roles, he gave off the impression of being flummoxed by his own attractiveness, whether as a queer prince (“Red, White & Royal Blue”), a Harry Styles-esque pop star (“The Idea of You”) or a popular football jock whose high school classmates are oblivious that he has the IQ of a second-grader (“Bottoms”). Here, Galitzine multiplies that self-conscious gag times a thousand, visibly dazzled by his own six-pack when he transforms from himbo to gym-bro. Even Skeletor is agog over the “big long sword dangling between his thighs.”

Smartly cast, Galitzine could prove to have the potential of Brad Pitt, another blond hunk who longed to get weird, chafing against roles that made him take off his shirt until he hit 55 and realized it was a flex. But shouldering a wobbly, expensive summer tentpole is a risk — just ask Sam Worthington or Taylor Kitsch. If “Masters of the Universe” tanks, here’s hoping Galitzine summons the strength to dig himself out of the rubble.

What will today’s kids think of

Avengers: Doomsday has the distinct pleasure of properly introducing Doctor Doom to the MCU. Sure, he briefly appeared in The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ post-credits scene, where he was caught confronting Franklin Richards. But Doom didn’t show his face or utter a single line of dialogue, choosing to keep his cards close to the vest ahead of Marvel Studios’ next team-up movie.

It’s hard to blame the powers that be for taking a patient approach with one of Marvel’s most iconic villains. After all, he doesn’t have the best track record in live-action, with Fox trying and failing twice to do him justice, first in Tim Story’s duology and then in the much-maligned Fan4stic. This time around, though, the comic books will serve as a guide and open the door for the weird and wacky.

For starters, the MCU’s take on Doom won’t just be some guy that the Fantastic Four run into. Doomsday will properly explore his origins, including his home country, Latveria, which didn’t appear in either of the previous Fantastic Four franchises.

A recent coffee shop pop-up attended by the Russo brothers revealed just how important Latveria is to Doomsday, as nearly all of the event’s merchandise utilized the fictional country’s flag.

SXSW

A villain keeping a strong connection to their birthplace is nothing new for the MCU. Thanos returned to Titan in Avengers: Infinity War and spoke to Doctor Strange about its downfall and how he doesn’t want the rest of the galaxy to suffer the same fate.

While Latveria’s standing in the MCU is a mystery, Doom could have a similar motivation to the Mad Titan, hoping to stop the incursions around the multiverse to keep his people safe from harm.

No matter what Doom’s goals are, though, they’re going to put him at odds with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, which means a final battle is on the horizon. When it’s time to throw down for the final time in Doomsday, all the major players are going to turn some poor place into a battlefield. And with the information available, the most likely spot is Latveria, an unfamiliar territory that will put the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four at a disadvantage.

Fortunately, the MCU’s heroes have experience going on the road. In fact, if Doomsday really does make Latveria its final stop, it will mark the third time the franchise has gone international for a final battle.

Sokovia

Sokovia floating in the air in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Marvel Studios

Avengers: Age of Ultron didn’t waste any time getting to the action. The movie started with Captain America and Co. laying siege to a HYDRA base in Sokovia, apprehending Baron von Strucker and retrieving Loki’s scepter, which the villain had used to create enhanced individuals, including Wanda and Pietro Maximoff.

When the Avengers got back home, they threw a party that was interrupted by Ultron, an AI program Tony Stark created to defend the world. After learning a bit too much about humanity, Ultron went rogue and decided to destroy the Earth rather than save it.

His mission led him to Sokovia, where he built a mission capable of lifting the country’s capital city into the sky and turning it into a meteor capable of total annihilation.

Not wanting to see the world fall apart, the Avengers suited up and returned to Sokovia at the end of Age of Ultron. Of course, the focus was on stopping the giant chunk of land from plummeting to Earth. But the heroes also found time to save plenty of civilians.

By the time the credits rolled, Sokovia had seen better days. However, the planet was safe once again, and all the Avengers went their separate ways. Little did they know their mistakes in Sokovia would come back to bite them in Captain America: Civil War.

Wakanda

The Wakandans assembling in Avengers: Infinity War.
Marvel Studios

When Avengers: Infinity War rolled around, the titular team was toast, breaking off into two factions after Helmut Zemo’s successful crusade.

That meant there was a lack of preparedness when Thanos and his Black Order started traveling through the galaxy in search of the Infinity Stones. The Avengers had access to a couple of the gems, including the Mind Stone in Vision’s head.

To keep the stone safe, Captain America’s crew took Vision to Wakanda, the world’s most advanced nation. No army on Earth had ever been able to invade Wakanda. The Mad Titan wasn’t from Earth, though, and his forces laid waste to Shuri’s defenses. Even after Thor showed up, the Avengers scrambled to keep Vision out of harm’s way.

All that hard work proved to be in vain when Thanos showed up in Wakanda and used the five Infinity Stones he had to fight his way to his target. Vision died twice as the villain completed his goal and wiped out half of existence. When the dust finally settled in Infinity War, all the Avengers could do was sit there in shock.

We horror fans have been eating well going into 2026, with the genre dominating the box office, bringing some excitement back to theaters. It has been great to see the resurgence, and it has given me a chance to nerd out. Directors like Curry Barker and Kane Pixels are finally getting the recognition they deserve after I found myself captivated by their YouTube films and shorts.

To pick these entries, I simply did what I usually do and tried to watch as many horror movies as possible, from small indie films to big blockbusters. Only picking the six best that have come out so far this year is difficult, so I also included some honorable mentions I had a blast with that were just edged out by my top choices. From folk horror to bloodbaths to an absurd gem you need to check out, I present to you the best horror films of 2026 (so far).

Honorable mentions

  • Exit 8
  • Backrooms
  • Send Help
  • Hokum
  • They Will Kill You

Why You Should Trust Me: I have been obsessed with horror films since my early teens. I’ve watched thousands of movies in the genre over the past two-plus decades, and have written on the subject for over a decade now. This includes mainstream, classic, cult, foreign, and experimental films. My interest in the genre runs deep.

‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’

A Bloody Battle to the Death That Stays Consistently Chaotic

I ended up watching Ready or Not 2: Here I Come back-to-back with They Will Kill You, which is an amazing double bill if you’re looking for some gory, action-led horror. It’s unlikely that anyone will go into this one without knowing anything about it, as it serves as a continuation of the first film. It brings even more chaos to the premise of surviving a cult’s deadly hunt.

Samara Weaving gives another phenomenal performance as the bloody bride, and this time, she goes up against an ensemble cast including fan favorites like Elijah Wood and Sarah Michelle Gellar. There are several notable highlights here, including a washing machine scene, Maia Jae’s fight with Weaving, and the phenomenal conclusion. I would argue the sequel is better than the original, so check it out for yourself.

‘Cold Storage’

Exploding Zombies From Space

Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell in Cold Storage Samuel Goldwyn Films

From one fun feature to another, Cold Storage certainly flew under the radar compared to others on this list. It received a limited theatrical release and only moderate fanfare. That’s a shame, as the movie is an entertaining mix of sci-fi and body horror. It has its own distinct and exceptionally goopy form of violent zombies who are both terrifying and funny.

The cast here is phenomenal. Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell play a perfect pair of delinquents who accidentally uncover a government conspiracy involving a brain-controlling, body-expanding virus from space. Of course, Liam Neeson, as a gruff ex-operative, is an ideal casting choice to help the pair. While it’s a silly splatter comedy, if you go in expecting only that, Cold Storage is one of the most entertaining movies you can watch.

‘Buffet Infinity’

Offering Everything You Will Ever Need… At a Price

Bullet Infinity Peterson Polaris

Buffet Infinity debuted at Fantasia 2025 but wasn’t released until 2026 (just in case there is any confusion). While there are layers to the story here, I’ll try to set it up as vaguely as possible. When two restaurants go to war through escalating commercials, they set off a chain of events that slowly turns horrific and intertwines with other businesses in the area. The story is told largely through commercials, with some fourth-wall-breaking segments chronicling an ever-growing evil taking over an entire town.

Two things you should know: you don’t want to know much more about the plot than that, and I have to admit that the ending is a bit of a miss. However, Bullet Infinity is quite a ride, and the impeccable editing, the dark comedy, and the combination of cosmic and gross-out horror is sublimely strung together, filtered through commercials of a bygone era. I watched it with a group of friends, and it was also an entertaining, macabre puzzle as we slowly began to realize how every business’s operations and commercials fed into a deeper, darker evil. This little indie gem from Canadian director Simon Glassman is a must-watch for fans of more experimental horror.

‘Primate’

Sometimes, All You Need is a Killer Monkey

Chimp in Primate Paramount Pictures

Sneaking in at the start of 2026, Primate certainly got its fair amount of praise. But since the box office continues to be dominated by horror titles, it may slowly get pushed out, which is a shame. It’s a straightforward horror story with no deeper context (well, aside from suggesting you shouldn’t own wild animals), no comedy, and no deep character study. However, it delivers what it promises: a killer monkey turning on its family.

This is stripped-back horror in the way that I love: a simple concept executed to perfection with plenty of gore and suspense. The subgenre of creature features has been in an awkward place, with many aiming for the comedic route or a quick cash grab (insert the names of 200-plus shark films on Tubi here). Sometimes you just want to turn your brain off and enjoy some well-crafted chaos, and Primate is one of the best movies to do just that.

‘Undertone’

The Devil Is in the Details

Nina Kiri stars in A24's 'Undertone' A24

I understand the divisive reactions to Undertone. It’s a minimalistic horror movie largely based on sound design, which isn’t going to appeal to everyone. I’m fairly obsessed with aural horror movies, with some of my favorites being Masking Threshold, Berberian Sound Studio, and Pontypool. So, this entry is a personal delight as it melds mysterious recordings with supernatural happenings.

Undertone is thick with atmosphere and dread, which permeates every scene as the viewer’s eyes wander in search of the sinister force implied. If you can tune into its frequency, Undertone is one of the best horror movies to come out of A24. If you’re watching this one solo, consider a good pair of earphones, as the sound design is essential to enjoying it. A love-or-love-to-hate entry, I know there will be many who have my back on this and many who will say it’s “boring.” It’s all good.

‘Obsession’

Be Careful What You Wish For

If you have followed Curry Barker’s YouTube shorts the way I have, then Obsession playing out as well as it does on the big screen is no surprise at all. Barker’s feature debut takes the simplest of hooks (a lovesick guy who wishes his crush would love him back), and twists it into something far nastier than its premise lets on. It’s a modern monkey’s paw scenario that goes to some disturbing lengths.

Michael Johnston is great at walking the line between pathetic and sympathetic. Inde Navarrette is hypnotic here, with a performance that swings from charming to skin-crawling. The ending here is gruesome and a true crowd-pleaser. As someone who appreciates smaller, indie horror productions, the fact that the movie was made for under a million dollars and is a box-office smash gives me hope for the future of horror at the cinema. We don’t want new entries in a franchise; we want fresh, original ideas from talented up-and-comers.

Want to see how these films stack up financially? Here are the numbers as of May 31, 2026. Note that Obsession and Backrooms are still in theaters, and both could surpass Scream 7. Obsession is on track to become one of the most profitable ever made.

First Look and Layout Design

When arriving at the MagneticSlots Casino website, players see a neat, user-friendly layout that emphasizes simple navigation. The general design approach seems to center on transparency and user control, a characteristic that aligns with the analytical reviewer’s preference for operators that honor user control. Although the visual style might not stand out in the industry, the functional execution is commendable and lays a strong groundwork for the gaming experience that follows.

Payment Methods and Payout Speed

Banking operations at MagneticSlots Casino are structured to accommodate the requirements of Canadian users while preserving international accessibility. Payment choices include major credit and debit cards, Interac e-Transfer, and a selection of e-wallets such as Skrill and Neteller. Cryptocurrency support is also provided for those who value anonymity and rapid processing, with Bitcoin and Ethereum among the recognized digital assets. The deposit process is immediate in nearly all cases, and the minimum funding amount is set at a reasonable level that does not exclude casual players. All transactions are secured with SSL technology, safeguarding sensitive financial data from interception. The cashier interface is simple, displaying available methods based on the player’s country of residence, which eliminates confusion and minimizes the likelihood of choosing an incompatible payment channel.

Withdrawal speed is a key metric in any casino review, and MagneticSlots Casino operates adequately in this regard. E-wallet payouts are typically handled within 24 hours after the pending period, while card and bank transfers may take between three and five business days. The casino enforces a standard verification procedure before the first withdrawal, demanding identity documents to comply with anti-money laundering regulations. This step, while sometimes regarded as an inconvenience, is a hallmark of a legitimate operation. The following factors impact withdrawal timelines and should be taken into account by players:

  1. Account verification status – fully verified accounts enjoy faster processing.
  2. Withdrawal method chosen – e-wallets are consistently the speediest option.
  3. Weekend and holiday schedules – banking teams may not process requests on non-business days.
  4. Bonus-related restrictions – active wagering requirements can delay cashout eligibility.

Overall, the payment infrastructure is reliable, with no hidden fees noted on the casino’s side, though players should verify with their payment provider for any external charges.

Mobile Compatibility and Player Experience

The trend toward mobile gaming is unmistakable, and MagneticSlots Casino has implemented a responsive design that converts the desktop experience to smartphones and tablets without compromise. There is no need to download a dedicated application; the website automatically adapts to screen size and operating system, whether iOS or Android. Touch controls are well-implemented, with buttons and menus sized correctly for finger taps. Game loading times on mobile are on par with desktop, as long as the user has a stable internet connection. The full game library is accessible, though some older titles may not be adapted to portrait mode. Live dealer games stream seamlessly, with chat functions and betting interfaces adjusted to avoid hiding the gameplay. This versatility means that Canadian players can activate their bonus, play a few spins, or manage their account while traveling or unwinding away from a computer.

From a usability perspective, the mobile version keeps all critical features, including the cashier, bonus dashboard, and customer support chat. Navigation is managed via a collapsible menu that preserves screen space without obscuring essential links. The search and filter tools remain completely operational, enabling fast access to preferred games. Battery consumption during extended play is reasonable, and the platform does not push aggressive notifications that could disrupt the experience. The analytical reviewer notes that while a native app might offer marginally better speed and push notification options, the browser-based approach ensures broad compatibility and removes the need for updates. For the bulk of players, the mobile offering will fulfill all practical requirements, making MagneticSlots Casino a viable choice for gaming on the go without compromising quality or security.

Customer Service and Continued Gamer Value

Reliable customer support is essential for any reputable internet casino, and MagneticSlots Casino provides multiple channels for assistance. Live chat is available directly from the website, operated by staff who answer immediately and show a thorough grasp of the site’s rules. For less critical issues, an email assistance method is available, with typical response times of a few hours. The gambling platform also runs a thorough FAQ area that covers common topics such as account verification, bonus rules, and technical troubleshooting. This self-service resource can resolve many issues without requiring direct communication, saving time for both gamblers and service representatives. The style of communication is professional and courteous, reflecting the calm, objective atmosphere that the brand cultivates. Support in multiple languages is provided, which aids the global clientele the casino caters to outside Canada.

Beyond the welcome bonus, MagneticSlots Casino seeks to maintain players through a organized loyalty program and regular promotions. The loyalty scheme recognizes consistent play with points that can be exchanged for bonus credits or other perks. Weekly reload bonuses, cashback offers, and slot tournaments provide variation to the promotional calendar, giving players reasons to return. The terms attached to these ongoing offers are generally aligned with the transparency observed in the welcome package, avoiding predatory conditions. The analytical reviewer notes that while the loyalty program may not be the most generous in the industry, it is fair and clearly communicated. The blend of reliable support and steady value-added promotions adds to a sustainable player experience that extends well beyond the initial deposit, making the casino a reasonable long-term entertainment option for those who value measured, consistent rewards over flashy gimmicks.

In summary, MagneticSlots Casino presents a balanced package for Canadian players in search of a safe, clear, and enjoyable online gaming environment. The welcome bonus is put together thoughtfully, the game library is deep and wide-ranging, and the operational aspects from payments to support are managed with professionalism. While no platform lacks minor imperfections, the complete experience withstands analytical scrutiny and is worth considering from those who value substance over spectacle. Players who sign up now and claim their bonus will discover a platform that respects their intelligence and offers a calm, reliable gaming journey.

Safety, Licensing, and Fair Play

An analytical review of any online casino must emphasize the security framework and regulatory standing, and MagneticSlots Casino provides a reassuring profile in these areas. The platform works under a license provided by a respected gaming authority, which applies strict operational standards including regular audits of game fairness and financial solvency. The specific jurisdiction is clearly presented at the bottom of the homepage, allowing players to check the license number independently. Data protection is managed through advanced encryption protocols, ensuring that personal information and transaction records remain confidential. The casino also adheres to privacy laws that regulate how user data is stored and shared, with a detailed policy document accessible to all visitors. These measures together create an environment where players can center on entertainment without undue concern about the safety of their funds or identity.

Fair play is further strengthened by the use of certified random number generators across all virtual games magneticslotss.net. Independent testing agencies routinely evaluate these systems to validate that outcomes are genuinely unpredictable and not manipulated in favor of the house beyond the stated mathematical edge. For live dealer games, the human element is countered by rigorous dealer training and real-time monitoring to prevent procedural errors. MagneticSlots Casino also supports responsible gaming through tools that allow players to set deposit limits, loss limits, and session time reminders. Self-exclusion options are accessible for those who need a break, and links to professional support organizations are supplied. This complete approach to player protection demonstrates a maturity that corresponds with the expectations of a discerning, analytical audience, establishing the casino as a trustworthy option in a crowded market.

Welcome Bonus Setup and Terms

The main offer at MagneticSlots Casino is a multi-level welcome package that covers across a new player’s first several deposits. Instead of a single lump sum, the bonus is spread to encourage sustained engagement and provide value over time. Typically, the first deposit attracts a generous match percentage up to a specified maximum amount, accompanied by a bundle of free spins on certain slot titles. Subsequent deposits trigger additional match bonuses, often at lower percentages but still significant for bankroll extension. This systematic approach allows players to explore the platform’s game variety while the casino mitigates risk through staggered release. An unbiased analysis of the terms reveals that the wagering requirements are comparable when compared to industry averages, set at a level that is neither overly restrictive nor trivially easy. Players should be aware that different game categories count unequally toward satisfying these requirements, a standard practice that benefits informed bankroll management.

The fine print attached to the welcome bonus merits careful attention from any discerning observer. Key conditions that Canadian players should examine before claiming include:

  • Minimum deposit amounts that must be met to activate each bonus tier.
  • Maximum bet caps while a bonus is active, stopping reckless wagering that could invalidate winnings.
  • Time frames for completing wagering requirements, usually ranging from seven to thirty days.
  • Game eligibility categories, as not all slots or table games qualify fully toward playthrough.
  • Withdrawal restrictions on funds linked to an active or unfulfilled bonus balance.

These stipulations are displayed in plain language within the promotions section, avoiding hidden clauses that could irritate users later. The casino also provides a bonus dashboard where players can monitor their progress in real time, a feature that adds a layer of transparency often lacking from competitors. Overall, the welcome package is well-calibrated to draw new sign-ups while preserving fairness for both parties.

MagneticSlots Casino has established itself as a

The next God of War title had been rumored earlier this year, and it now stands revealed as God of War Laufey, a spin-off that focuses on Kratos’ late wife, Faye. While the initial trailer apparently disclosed when Laufey takes place, the developers behind the game have offered more light about how the upcoming title fits in with Kratos’ adventures.

Faye’s story in the afterlife of the gods begins almost immediately after Kratos and their child, Atreus, laid her to rest in the 2018 God of War. During an interview with IGN, Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog appeared to suggest that the 2018 game and Laufey will unfold simultaneously.

“[Faye] was omnipresent, but visually not represented. In 2018 she was a feeling; she was a phantom and a specter, but one whose tendrils stretched out through the entirety of the narrative, and it gave her this interesting sense of power inside of it. It was like, man, it would be so interesting to see who she was before, but it also would be interesting to see how things continue forward.”

As noted in the clip posted by the X user above, Kratos strongly believed that Faye was guiding him from beyond the grave in God of War. It seems likely that Laufey will depict Faye attempting to reach her husband despite the vast metaphysical distance between them.

In the meantime, Faye will have her own problems to deal with in the afterlife. But she’s got two new companions: a living ribbon named Rue and a talking gelatinous cube called Phranque, who was our pick for the breakout character of State of Play.

Sony Santa Monica has promised that there will be more Kratos stories in the future beyond Laufey. In the meantime, a remake of the original God of War trilogy is currently in development. A God of War live-action TV series is currently in production for Prime Video.

God of War Laufey will be released on PlayStation 5, but it doesn’t currently have a release date.

In a market as robust as any in the film and video space, there’s no shortage of production monitors available to filmmakers at pretty much any price point these days. Still, while everyone loves a good reference monitor for setting their shots and building a video village, when you get to the higher end of the offerings, it does start to get a little scarce.

So it’s always nice to see a new option in the space, particularly from SmallHD, which has such a great reputation for quality and performance, particularly with its OLED line. Let’s look at the new SmallHD OLED 16, a UHD 4K 12G-SDI production reference monitor that offers high-end, very helpful specs at a moderately reasonable price point.

SmallHD OLED 16 Monitor

Designed to be a top option for high-end productions and serious-minded cinematographers and crews, the SmallHD OLED 16 monitor packs a lot into a compact form factor. Built around a 16” bright OLED display, the SmallHD OLED 16 will be able to provide a 3840 x 2160 native resolution, 1,500,000:1 contrast ratio, 10-bit color processing, and four 12G-SDI inputs and outputs.

The monitor is also one of the few on the market capable of delivering true blacks, which helps deliver exceptional shadow detail and optimal color precision for reliable exposure evaluation.

All performance metrics are helpful for those looking to seamlessly match images across multiple monitors in their workflows and video villages.

Rugged and Connectable

The SmallHD OLED 16 should be quite connectable as it is equipped with four 12G-SDI inputs and outputs, which should help it easily link with pro video components like wireless receivers and additional monitors.

The design of the SmallHD OLED 16 is also rugged, with a unibody chassis that should be able to handle the rough-and-tumble life on set, whether it’s on a DIT cart, in a video village, or used out in the field.

The monitor also integrates with SmallHD’s popular PageOS 6 system for full access to pro-level monitoring tools, including downstream LUTs, a revamped Color Pipe, a GPI tally border, upgraded Custom Exposure Assist, and finer adjustments.

As mentioned above, this is a high-end reference monitor, so it’s a bit more expensive than some entry-level options in this space. However, even compared to previous SmallHD OLED options, it’s actually a bit more affordable and intended as a value option for high-end crews.

The post-Memorial Day numbers for the three evening newscasts were not memorable, as they all trended downward in total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo.

After some weeks of positive momentum, CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil saw the deepest declines in either of the measured categories, posting a double-digit drop in the prized demo for the week of May 25.

Note: The weekly averages of ABC News, NBC News, and CBS News are based on different periods: ABC News and CBS News’ averages are based on three days (Tuesday – Thursday), while NBC News’ is based on two days (Wednesday – Friday). All three broadcasts were coded as specials due to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday (05/25/2025). On Tuesday (5/26/26) and Thursday (5/28/26), NBC Nightly News was retitled to NBC Nitely News. On Friday (5/29/26), World News Tonight was retitled to WNT-ABC, and CBS Evening News was retitled to CBS Evening Nws. These broadcasts were excluded from the weekly and season averages.

According to national live+same-day big data plus program ratings from Nielsen, ABC World News Tonight with David Muir averaged 7.824 million total viewers and 961,000 Adults 25-54 demo viewers for the week of May 25. The evening newscast was down by -4% among total viewers and -1% among A25-54 viewers compared to the previous week. Looking at its performance during the same week in 2025* (the week beginning May 26), WNT was up +11% in total viewers and +9% in the demo.

NBC Nightly News finished in second place in total viewers and the demo, averaging 5.955 million and 800,000 viewers, respectively. Compared to the previous week, Nightly News was down by -2% in total viewers and -8% in the demo. When comparing its performance to the same week a year ago, Nightly News was up by +4% in total viewers but was down -4% in the demo—the only newscast with a decline within this yearly comparison.

CBS Evening News finished the week of May 25 with 3.787 million total viewers and 493,000 demo viewers. CBS News’ newscast was down -6% in total viewers and -19% in the demo compared to the previous week—the only network to fall by double-digits in either of the measurements. The post-Memorial Day numbers for the three

Conclusion

It’s never easy when your favorite TV show gets canceled.

After spending years watching networks pull the plug on promising series far too soon, The Hunting Party ending after two seasons didn’t come as a huge surprise.

Despite landing a stronger lead-in from Law & Order: SVU, the drama never drew the audience NBC hoped for.

(Ralph Bavaro/NBC)

Still, its recent arrival on Netflix paints a much more interesting picture.

The series quickly climbed the platform’s charts, suggesting it may work far better as a binge-watch than a traditional weekly procedural.

When news of the cancellation spread online Tuesday evening, Deadline reported that the studio is already exploring options to shop the series elsewhere. Naturally, Netflix is part of that conversation.

What makes this situation especially fascinating is that Melissa Roxburgh has been through this exact scenario before.

Back to the Past - Manifest Season 4 Episode 20Back to the Past - Manifest Season 4 Episode 20
(Netflix/Screenshot)

Back in 2021, NBC canceled Manifest after three seasons despite the show’s passionate fanbase and ongoing mythology.

Fans refused to let it quietly disappear, and once the series hit Netflix, it exploded in popularity.

The Hunting Party Could Be Melissa Roxburgh’s Latest Show Saved by Netflix

For weeks, Manifest dominated the streamer’s charts and became one of the biggest TV success stories of the pandemic era.

The surge in popularity ultimately convinced Netflix to revive the series for a supersized fourth and final season, allowing the creative team to conclude the story properly.

(Ralph Bavaro/NBC)

TV shows rarely get a second chance, but there’s a genuine possibility that Melissa Roxburgh could become part of two Netflix rescue stories in a row.

Of course, any conversations about saving The Hunting Party are still in the early stages, and there’s already pressure behind the scenes because of cast options.

Once those deals expire, reassembling everyone becomes significantly harder.

Honestly, I can’t imagine fans would want a continuation that only brings back Roxburgh while losing the rest of the ensemble.

(Ralph Bavaro/NBC)

The chemistry between the cast was a huge part of what made the series work.

That means any potential deal would need to come together quickly because one delay or complication could shut the door on the show for good.

NBC also doesn’t exactly inspire confidence when it comes to supporting dramas outside the Law & Order and One Chicago universes.

Plenty of modern TV shows survive weaker live ratings because streaming and international viewing now matter just as much, if not more.

(Ralph Bavaro/NBC)

Just look at Grey’s Anatomy. Its live ratings are nowhere near what they once were, but the series continues thriving thanks to streaming and global interest.

Right now, the path forward for The Hunting Party feels pretty clear.

If fans really want the series to survive, they need to rally around it the same way Manifest fans did: binge it relentlessly on Netflix and prove the audience never disappeared in the first place.

There’s certainly no shortage of buzz surrounding The Hunting Party, and given that the series still had plenty of gas left in the tank when NBC canceled it, I genuinely believe there’s a path forward.

(Ralph Bavaro/NBC)

Netflix has already announced end dates for several of its biggest dramas, including Emily in Paris, The Lincoln Lawyer, and The Night Agent, meaning there could soon be room for another high-concept series to join the lineup.

The big question is whether Netflix actually wants to make a play for it.

The streamer has become just as notorious for canceling shows as saving them, but something about The Hunting Party feels like a natural fit for the platform.

It already operates on a shorter season model, with The Hunting Party Season 1 clocking in at just 10 episodes, making it a much easier pickup than many network dramas.

(Ralph Bavaro/NBC)

Over to you, The Hunting Party Fanatics.

Do you think Netflix should save the series, or was NBC right to pull the plug?

Let’s keep the conversation going — it’s the only way the good stuff survives.

“I went for a walk with my mother when I was a child, and she never made it home.”

That’s the matter-of-fact, yet truly devastating, opening line which instantly proves “The Witness” isn’t interested in further sensationalizing one of the most sensationalized murders in recent UK history. The case of Rachel Nickell, a 23-year-old mother stabbed to death in broad daylight as she walked her two-year-old son in a London park, barely left the tabloids in the 1990s, creating a trial by media which wrongly influenced not only public opinion but a Metropolitan police team who plumbed new depths of incompetence.

Although better known for his entirely fictional — and often fantastical — crime shows, writer Rob Williams (“Killing Eve,” “Suspicion”) lets the damning evidence speak for itself. His melodramatic impulses are no doubt kept in check by the input from Nickell’s partner André Hanscombe and their now-grown-up son Alex, plus the accompanying documentary, “The Murder of Rachel Nickell,” which Netflix is dropping on the same day as the dramatized miniseries.

Wisely, the three-parter doesn’t dwell on the horrific incident, quickly cutting from the brief glimpse Nickell sees of her attacker to the emergency services response: the heartbreaking sight of a bloodied and dazed, but thankfully unharmed, toddler in the back of an ambulance says it all. In one of many contemporaneous news bulletins which help illustrate the insatiable press interest, we learn Alex (Jahsaiah Williams) was found by a passer-by desperately clinging onto his mother’s lifeless body while pleading with her to get up.

In the immediate aftermath, “The Witness” effortlessly blends together the grieving family portrait and the urgent manhunt as André (Jordan Bolger) and a pair of amiable “fun uncle” detectives try their best to coax the necessary information out of a young boy inevitably more interested in playing with toy dinosaurs than bringing his mom’s killer to justice. “He hasn’t cried once,” André notes about his son’s behavior before a therapy session that turns aggressive exacerbates his worries.

However, as both the pressure to find the culprit and the fear Alex may still be at harm intensifies, the story splits into two. The Hanscombes move to Spain in an attempt to leave their trauma behind, with the flashforwards to various points in the 2000s proving time and distance aren’t always the great healers. Concurrently, the Met botch their way through their investigation, diverting all their attention to an entirely innocent man while ignoring the serial offender under their nose.

It’s to Williams’ credit that both sides compel.

Bolger, best-known to global audience for his roles in “The 100,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” and “The Crow,” doesn’t waste his opportunity in more grounded fare, delivering a stoic performance as a man forced to internalize his agony while simultaneously adapting to single parenthood in the most tragic circumstances imaginable.

He also shares a convincing father-son chemistry with the grown-up Alex (Max Fincham), now an understandably troubled teen determined to keep the vague memories of his other parent alive, whether through the bottle of perfume he hides under his pillow or adhering to her pescatarian diet. “I don’t want to remember mum for her death,” he shouts in one of several slanging matches that occasionally threaten to spill into violence. “Is this really the boy she gave her life for?” André asks during another particularly raw argument sparked by a run-in with the law. The real Hanscombes appear to have been unflinching in their honesty.

Britain’s largest police force, on the other hand, is presented as the height of duplicity. Frustrated at the lack of evidence and feeling the heat of the gutter press, their determination to hone in on their sole suspect would be laughable if not for the catastrophic consequences. Colin Stagg’s (comedic actor Jamie Bisping impressing in a rare straight role) only crime was vaguely fitting the profile of a white loner with deviant sexual fantasies: insisting the chance of two such individuals being in the same vicinity were “vanishingly small,” the psychology profession in 1992 seemed staggeringly naive.

“The Witness” doesn’t have the time to delve as deep into the Met’s most astonishing tactic as 2021’s “Deceit,” a miniseries in which BAFTA nominee Niamh Algar played an undercover officer tasked with luring a confession out of Stagg. Nevertheless, the nuts and bolts of this honeytrap plot, known as Operation Edzell, still make the jaws drop. Likewise, the backpedaling and buck-passing once the realization hits that it’s led to — as Sir David Frost best summarizes in another well-chosen archival clip — “one of the great fiascos in police history.”

Those unfamiliar with the story will also be dumbfounded by the catalog of mistakes that not only put Stagg behind bars for 14 months, but allowed the real killer to roam free (and kill again) for another two years. Without wishing to give away the ending of a real-life case finally resolved in 2008, the information disclosed is anger-inducing and the unresponsive, unemotional demeanor of the perpetrator truly chilling.

It could be argued the final episode spends too much screentime focusing on — and even trying to understand — someone so depraved, particularly when his victims aren’t afforded the same treatment. We learn little about Rachel and we only spend a minute in her company before her untimely death. That said, the companion doc paints a much fuller picture, and it’s a testament to her legacy that André and Alex’s complex relationship — as the epilogue states — is now closer than ever.

Parallels can be drawn with “Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles De Menezes,” another shocking indictment of the Met’s inadequacies and culture of self-preservation. Unshowy, unhurried, and methodical — everything the institution at its heart was not — it’s ultimately less true crime dramatization and more invaluable public service broadcasting.

All three episodes of “The Witness” will start streaming on Netflix on Thursday, June 4.

Let’s see if I can get through this without referencing Julia Cameron’s 1992 book The Artist’s Way. “Rock Music” presents a simple, compelling argument: Art is daily bread. Charli XCX has always used arch presentation and extreme sounds to conceal a fundamentally earnest, romantic point of view, and beneath “Rock Music”’s shroud of heavily processed guitars, she advocates for creativity as a form of essential lifeblood. She suggests it’s something that can be as spontaneous and lighthearted as taking pictures with your friends at Jean’s, and something you should put your body on the line for: “The nerve damage is real/But it’s the only way to feel,” she sings, referencing the physical trauma she’s suffered as a result of years of battering herself around onstage.

You can also take “Rock Music” as an elite troll and slightly stupid provocation, and it’s successful on that level too: The lyric “I think the dancefloor is dead” had a borderline Chalamet-on-opera response online when it was teased in Charli’s recent Vogue profile. But I think the song’s trollish posture is a feint. The track’s overdriven power chords, the fodder of so many uninspired wannabe anthems, are both funny ha-ha and totally earned on a song that’s so self-consciously Inspirational; I’m struck by how poignant it is to hear Charli, who approaches creative risk-taking with a borderline spiritual fervor, to pass down this piece of advice to her listener: “Hurt yourself/Maybe jump off the stage/I hope they catch you today/But if they don’t, it’s OK.” Maybe I’m a rube for taking a 115-second song so seriously, or maybe all that matters is that I took the leap.

International Documentary Association (IDA) announces the initial program for Getting Real ’26, its biennial convening for documentary practitioners, held in-person in Los Angeles and virtually from July 20–23, 2026.

The industry’s current terms are no longer working. It’s time to collectively rewrite them. Getting Real ’26 will examine what documentary owes its makers, its subjects, and the public it exists to serve, with discussions on generative AI, the economics of survival in an underfunded field, new cooperative and distribution models, rising censorship, the defense of public media, and filmmakers’ political power.

IDA Executive Director Dominic Willsdon said, “IDA exists to help documentary makers keep doing their work, and right now that means confronting the forces narrowing how that work gets made and seen. But Getting Real isn’t where the field’s problems get described back to us. It’s where the filmmakers living these conditions build the responses themselves — the practical models, tactics, and alliances no one else is going to provide, and that Getting Real exists to put to work.”

The in-person festival hub is centered in Little Tokyo at the Japanese American National Museum, Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, and the Union Center for the Arts. The conference program offers panels, keynote speeches, presentations, workshops, breakout sessions, gatherings, lecture performances, receptions, a distribution-themed game show, and the return of the participatory “Build Your Own Breakout Session.”

Signature talks include keynotes from Mandy Chang, veteran documentary executive and new CEO of the Documentary Film Council, the UK’s filmmaker advocacy organization driven by working documentarians; and Petna Katondolo, Congolese filmmaker and visionary leader behind Yole!Africa, whose work spans film workshops to food sovereignty farming. Joining them are Set Hernandez and Leonard Cortana, two of documentary’s sharpest thinkers on bending systems toward justice; Pulkit Datta, Marielle Olentine, and Nik Damants from Tikkun Olam Productions, whose breakout hit Israelism and movement-based distribution strategies have amplified some of the past year’s most courageous films; and Vinay Shukla, the Indian filmmaker behind While We Watched, whose battles against censorship boards and corporate suppression made him a standout at the last Getting Real.

In late June, the full program will be announced, including 10 more main stage sessions, breakout sessions, workshops, additional signature talks, and the two films selected for Getting Real’s most popular format, “Here’s What Really Happened.”

Getting Real ’26 is programmed by Abby Sun, Meghan Monsour, and Lisa Valencia-Svensson.

More information about the Getting Real ’26 conference, which IndieWire has called the documentary film industry’s “premiere field-building gathering,” including how to register, is available at documentary.org/gettingreal26. Program details are outlined below.

Getting Real ‘26 is supported by Just Films | Ford Foundation, Wyncote Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Golden Globe Foundation, the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, Wrapbook Payroll, Chiledoc, BAVC Media, and Eventive. Additional funding is provided by support from MacArthur Foundation and Spaht Family Foundation. Variety and KCRW are the official media sponsors.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Signature Talks

Mandy Chang (keynote) is a veteran documentary filmmaker and executive who has worked across the field as a director, producer, and commissioner in public TV (ABC and BBC) and the commercial sector (Fremantle), before being appointed CEO of the UK’s Documentary Film Council.

For Mandy, documentary film is an art form that speaks truth to power. She developed her career as the sector was being built on a base of robust public investment, often through public service broadcasting. Now, as the very foundations of documentary storytelling are under sustained attack, Mandy will deliver our first keynote on why independent documentary filmmaking cannot be protected without protecting the notion of documentary as public service. As she has said in interviews: “I think if you are privileged enough to work in this industry, you have to give something back.”

Petna Katondolo (keynote) is a Congolese filmmaker, educator, and ancestral ecologist whose artistic works are acclaimed for their decolonial African futurism. For Petna, questions of sovereignty and narrative control have been at the heart of his work as a filmmaker, educator, and community organizer for several decades. Starting with the philosophy, practices, and experiences developed at Yole!Africa, the cultural center he founded in 2000, Petna’s keynote will expand into a broader conversation about what sovereignty truly means in a world shaped by extraction, displacement, technological transformation, and the ongoing struggle for communities to tell their own stories.

Tikkun Olam Productions is a nonprofit cooperative that built the grassroots audience for their 2023 film Israelism themselves before it reached No. 1 on Apple TV’s documentary chart. Their latest award-winning project, Vs. Goliath, a docuseries about frontline communities fighting fossil fuel giants, has recently launched its impact and distribution campaign with a large coalition of partners. The collective’s grassroots success has led them to support high-impact campaigns for films including No Other Land, The Voice of Hind Rajab, Life After, The Encampments, and American Doctor, while also producing campaign media for social movements and the video podcast Beyond Israelism for Zeteo.

In this wide-ranging Fireside Chat with journalist and programmer Anthony Kaufman, three core members of the collective, Pulkit Datta, Marielle Olentine, and Nik Damants, will discuss the practical architecture of their multi-modal model: what a direct distribution and impact team actually looks like, how release strategy shapes production from the outset, and what it means to build films for more than one outcome at a time.

In a second Fireside Chat, we bring together two of documentary’s foremost thinkers, Set Hernandez and Leonard Cortana, for the first time. Both have spent years testing many of our field’s assumptions. Hernandez built their directorial debut, unseen, from the ground up as a film designed to be equitably enjoyed by blind and sighted audiences alike, then used audience impact research to make the economic and civic case for films that serve communities the industry has yet to take seriously. Cortana, a scholar, filmmaker, op-ed writer, and doctoral researcher, came to documentary through humanitarian work before channeling that formation into building BIPOC EURODOC, a collective infrastructure for producers navigating an international ecosystem. What connects them is a shared refusal to wait, to ask permission, to soften the critique, or to pretend the problem is smaller than it is. This conversation brings them together to talk about the provocation of impact and what it actually takes to keep going.

Panels / Conversations

How We Resist: The Filmmakers United

Around the world, documentary filmmakers are navigating censorship, surveillance, legal persecution, and the slow erosion of independent filmmaking. These pressures aren’t new. Filmmakers have been developing responses, protections, and collective strategies for decades. But the forms of repression are multiplying: state funding withdrawn and film festivals targeted by politicians; film ratings boards and corporate platforms pressured into compliance; filmmakers surveilled, prosecuted, and exiled for daring to film. In this conversation, filmmakers who have faced these conditions will share how they fought back through legal appeals, media strategy, activist networks, and the slow work of building institutions.

Supported by Grace Lay — LinLay Productions

Moderator: Orwa Nyrabia

Panelists: Lucía Requejo (Fuera de Campo), Vinay Shukla (While We Watched), Ingrid Raphael (No Evil Eye Cinema), Alina Simone (Black Snow)

Terms of Engagement: Learning From Coalition Politics

With U.S. federal arts funding gutted, public media infrastructure under pressure, and media consolidation accelerating, the conditions under which documentary is made, distributed, and seen are now explicitly political questions. Sectors facing parallel pressures in local journalism, music, and the arts broadly have learned that fragmented advocacy loses; coalitions win. In this panel, we will hear from grassroots coalitions who have launched campaigns, won policy victories, and built field-wide political power where there was none, to explore what cross-sector coalition-building looks like in practice. They will discuss how they identified leverage points, what has worked, and what it would take for documentary filmmakers to show up, and stay, as a political force.

Most industry discussions about AI have focused considerable energy on whether AI is a threat or an opportunity, a tool or a menace, or headed straight into boosterism. Meanwhile, the actual terms of its integration into documentary workflow are being set without us: in editing suites, in platform algorithms, and in the compute infrastructure being built on extracted data and contested labor. For the past year, Kat Cizek (MIT Co-Creation Studio) and shirin anlen (WITNESS) have been tracking these developments through a monthly column in Documentary magazine and as part of the steering committee of the AI + Documentary Working Group. In this session, Cizek and anlen will present two case studies of AI in recent documentary practice, map the emerging field of movement-building in response to the AI industrial complex (from open-source alternatives to grassroots resistance against the environmental costs of data centers), and open the conversation to panelists working at the intersection of AI, documentary, and advocacy beyond North America.

This panel conversation is paired with a workshop (“AI Tools for Documentary Production”) facilitated by Jorge Caballero and Anna Giralt Gris, which will demonstrate how documentarians can use AI to create research, investigative, and workflow tools that work for us, by us. Conferencegoers are encouraged to attend both if they’re interested in the practical and ethical applications of AI.

What’s the Deal: A Distribution Game Show

Knowledge is power. For many of us, alternative forms of distribution beyond working with a distributor, broadcaster, or platform seem like a backup plan. But for some, and perhaps many, projects, other pathways may lead to more impacted audiences and impactful screenings, even if they are developed out of necessity. For well-connected filmmakers, we hear rumors of these supposedly ancillary deals and how they work through the whisper network. It’s time to bring these conversations out of the corners of happy hours and into the open. In What’s the Deal, an experimental panel format crossed with a game show, filmmaker-host Chase Whiteside will dive into these questions with experienced producers who are willing to share their secrets and successes, but only after their fellow panelists and the audience first take their best guesses at what the real deals were.

This event will be livestreamed but not recorded and will not be available for replay after the event.

The Hot Seat

Despite our best efforts to create a more just and distributed documentary ecosystem, we still live in a world where a small group of people select or acquire films for the entities filmmakers desire: unrestricted grants, influential international film festivals, deep-pocketed platforms, and legacy broadcasters. Questions and assumptions about their processes as crucial points of access and support for filmmakers tend toward the worst. For this session, we turn the tables. These intrepid gatekeepers have pledged to give honest answers to your questions, especially the most challenging ones.

Hold Our Ground: Advocating for Independent Film in the U.S.

In the past eighteen months, Future Film Coalition has organized independent film in the U.S. in ways we haven’t seen in decades: building a public membership coalition, gathering filmmaker testimony for federal antitrust regulators, and testifying before the U.S. Senate. In partnership with IDA and other coalition partners, we will take stock of the Block the Merger campaign’s accomplishments and the current status of the consolidation fight. FFC will also present the case for a first-of-its-kind national economic impact study of U.S. independent film production, which would for the first time quantify what independent film contributes to local economies, workforce development, and the broader screen sector. The session closes with the harder question: beyond fighting mergers, what policy interventions in antitrust enforcement, public funding, and tax incentive structures could durably protect the independent ecosystem? Come ready to act.

Ground Level: Public Interest, Local Trust

Public media in the United States, and across much of the democratic world, is under pressure from political interference, funding withdrawal, and the gravitational pull of multinational platforms that have little interest in local communities. But the institutions best positioned to serve those communities may not be the existing national ones fighting to survive. A new generation of local and regional public media leaders are reimagining what it means to be publicly supported: building trust through proximity, forging coalitions across cities. This conversation brings together practitioners from across public (interest) media, in the U.S. and internationally, to ask what a new localism for documentary might look like, and what it would require to build it.

By Our Reckoning: Transitional Justice

Not every documentary needs to justify its impact. But some films enter history at precisely the moment when courts, governments, and societies, despite the work of truth and reconciliation commissions, have failed or refused to reckon with the past. In many places, documentary has reached into the silences left by legal processes: into families, generational inheritance, the gap between what a country officially remembers and what its survivors know to be true, and what the descendants of perpetrators would rather forget. This conversation brings together filmmakers whose work has become part of the transitional justice movements their films document, and has even inspired global activist movements advocating for accountability. How much can cinema really help break pacts of silence, support legal campaigns, and work toward peace and reconciliation that persist long after a film’s release?

Workshops

Renowned members of our community and the most interesting thinkers working in adjacent fields draw from sundry experiences as they dive deep into their craft. In our workshops, you’ll encounter ideas that can inform your own practice.

Budgeting in Troubled Times: Maximize Your Resources and Finish Your Film

At a time when documentary filmmakers face extreme fundraising difficulties, documentary budget expert Robert Bahar pivots from his usual workshop to address the elephant in the room: how do you protect your creative vision when the financial ground keeps moving?

In this workshop, Robert will break the filmmaking process into discrete production stages, guiding participants through a workflow for maintaining your full vision for a project while making necessary adjustments to the budget as fundraising realities come into focus, one stage at a time. Practical and empowering in equal measure, this approach helps filmmakers plan ahead, avoid compromise, and ensure their work can be completed.

Facilitator: Robert Bahar (You Are Not Alone: Fighting the Wolf Pack)

Moderator: Lisa Valencia-Svensson (Getting Real ’26)

Loading Your Trojan Horse

Documentary filmmakers working on socially engaged projects are accustomed to thinking about impact in terms of reach: funders, festivals, audiences. But getting people to watch is not the same as changing what they believe, and changing what they believe is not the same as changing the world. Researcher and author Sarah Stein Lubrano studies how people actually change their minds, and her findings challenge many assumptions about how art and politics intersect. In this workshop, she will introduce filmmakers to key theories of power and political change, drawing on her research into cognitive dissonance and political communication. Then she will guide attendees to pressure-test and refine their own theory of change for the work we make.

Facilitator: Sarah Stein Lubrano (Don’t Talk About Politics: How to Change 21st-Century Minds)

Who Do You See? Casting as Recognition

Many of the difficulties documentary filmmakers encounter, in collaboration, in the fraught ethics of representation, in distribution, are often framed as problems of production. But could many of these difficulties begin much earlier, in who is chosen to be a part of our documentaries, and why? Director Sarvnik Kaur has built a filmography of films featuring protagonists whose lives, relationships, and situations embody contexts far beyond their individual selves. In this workshop, she will first share her philosophy of mutual recognition and surrender that leads her to subjects who are co-authors of their own stories, carrying truths larger than they yet realize. In the second half, Kaur will then guide selected audience members through a “stripped-from-the-headlines” exercise to help strengthen our casting muscles and build our storytelling instincts.

AI Tools for Documentary Production

Instead of relying solely on closed, off-the-shelf AI products, a growing number of filmmakers are creating their own applications and integrating AI in their filmmaking on their own terms. Imagine a forensic reconstruction algorithm designed to turn public footage into analyzable evidence; a computational reader for massive data analysis; a semantic search engine that allows a director to retrieve archival and rush material by meaning rather than by tag; and a voice system to assist a protagonist with specific needs. Each of these tools was, in fact, built by the filmmakers at Artefacto Films, a Barcelona-based research and production studio, with an AI coding assistant, a practice now widely known as “vibecoding,” in which plain speech is transformed into executable code. Their small library of internal tools sits beside the development desk, the camera, and the edit as essential parts of their trade, and perhaps it could be part of yours, too.

This workshop will open with an overview of how filmmakers are applying AI to nonfiction today, and how documentarians can use AI to create research, investigative, and workflow tools that work for us, by us. Artefacto Films’ Jorge Caballero and Anna Giralt Gris will walk us through one of their applications and demonstrate how it was created. Attendees will leave with a concrete sense of what it means to build, not just use, AI inside a documentary practice.

Breakout Sessions

Real Talk on Financial Instability (Filmmaker Case Studies With A-Doc)

The reality of independent filmmaking is that most projects do not raise their full budgets. So what do you do when cash flow dries up or never comes in? In this A-Doc-led breakout, you will learn how to form a strategy for getting your film made, with advice from those who have successfully made it through. Guest filmmakers will first share their approaches, tailored to their specific projects and situations. Attendees will then break out into groups, with one guest filmmaker in each group to answer your burning questions. This session is complementary to Robert Bahar’s “Budgeting in Troubled Times: Maximize Your Resources and Finish Your Film,” where you will learn how to implement these strategies and make the most of the funds you have using real-world tools.

A-Doc is a national network that works to increase the visibility and support of Asian Americans in the documentary field.

Blueprinting for Filmmaker Co-ops (With Yael Bridge)

Massive defunding and consolidation across the industry have made it harder, if not impossible, for many filmmakers to sustain a living from their craft. In response, structural alternatives such as cooperatives seem to offer a different path forward by reducing overhead, distributing costs, and creating more durable career paths. But what is a worker-owned co-op, and what does it actually take to start and run one?

In this breakout session, filmmaker Yael Bridge guides us through what a sustainable filmmaking practice could look like and leads an open exploration of the cooperative business models available to independent documentary and media makers. From traditional structures to emerging collective models, the session zeroes in on the cooperative form: how it works, what it requires, and what it could look like in our field. Yael is joined by members of filmmaker cooperatives that have operated successfully for years.

Together, participants will examine the real economics of cooperative enterprise, including how shared infrastructure and pooled resources can bring down total budgets, and will workshop their own ideas for what a filmmaker-owned cooperative could look like in practice.

Participant Compensation and Documentary Ethics (With the Documentary Producers Alliance Ethics Committee)

Although questions about participant compensation have dogged documentarians for decades, they are becoming more urgent, complex, and widespread. We observe that filmmakers increasingly encounter requests for payment in exchange for access. They must balance these requests with institutional expectations to uphold longstanding journalistic concerns, funder and distributor restrictions on participant compensation, shrinking production budgets, and ethical questions around authorship and fairness, such as those raised by the Documentary Accountability Working Group and Margie Ratliff’s Documentary Participants Empowerment Alliance. In an industry where independent nonfiction work is usually underfunded, what counts as compensation? When should compensation occur? And how do these choices affect trust, consent, authorship, and power?

The Documentary Producers Alliance Ethics Committee, co-chaired by Lisa Leeman and Alexandra Blaney, has witnessed a growing need for candid conversations about participant compensation. As the DPA begins a new initiative focused on participant compensation, this session will help gather field information and identify the systemic changes needed.

Build Your Own Breakout!

This participatory session will take place in person for All Access passholders. Putting into place all the skills, ideas, and inspirations that we’ve garnered throughout the four days of the conference, experienced facilitators will guide attendees through a brainstorming process to gather issues important to us. We will then connect attendees with similar interests so we can all build our own breakout sessions to turn desire into action.

Gatherings

Lights, Coffee, Action!

From funding to distribution, the documentary landscape has experienced tremendous changes over the past few years. Some entities have merged, others have folded, and still others have changed their funding priorities. For filmmakers, it can be difficult to track the changes. During this breakfast, entities representing foundations, nonprofits, streamers, and broadcasters will welcome you to their tables. A simultaneous version of this event will also occur on our virtual platform. In this casual setting, you will be able to meet some of the current players and understand what types of projects they are looking to support. After every 20 minutes, all attendees will rotate to a new table, so they can meet multiple types of supporters.

This event is the one place during Getting Real that operates outside of the conference’s “no-pitch zone.” If you would like to participate as a funding/buying organization, please email Lilla Sparks at lilla.sparks@documentary.org.

Industry Expo Lunch

From products to services, the documentary landscape has undergone significant innovation over the past few years. For filmmakers and other professionals in the documentary industry, staying informed about these advancements can be daunting. During this lunch on the JACCC Plaza, a diverse array of organizations will showcase their services and products for those seeking the tools to advance in the documentary field. A full list of vendors is forthcoming.

Last Call: An IDA Member Party

Let’s come together for one last call with good people, a good party, and a few more good memories. IDA members are invited to join us for late-night appetizers, drinks, and a special activity from conference speaker Sarah Stein Lubrano (“Come as strangers; leave as friends”). Plus, we are giving away Think Tank bags throughout the party.

AllySpin Casino – Varno mesto za igranje na spletu in osvojitev pravega ...

13,950 Bonus Wheel Images, Stock Photos, 3D objects, & Vectors ...

For the first time since the pandemic, the box office is heading into June after a May where domestic grosses cleared $1 billion. And while there isn’t another “Backrooms”-sized opening expected to come from any of the three wide releases hitting theaters this weekend, they could combine to provide a similar boost to theaters.

The three films in question are Paramount/Miramax’s “Scary Movie,” the sixth installment and revival of the 2000s horror parody series from Damon and Marlon Wayans, Amazon MGM’s big-budget “Masters of the Universe,” and a late indie addition with YouTube roots, Fathom/Glitch’s “The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act.”

Of these three films, “Scary Movie” is projected to take the No. 1 spot barring an insanely strong second weekend hold by A24/Chernin’s “Backrooms” after its $81 million opening. That’s not out of the realm of possibility as “Backrooms” just posted a $7.7 million Monday, the highest ever recorded for an R-rated horror film.

But “Scary Movie” will do just fine whether it is No. 1 or No. 2, with independent projections predicting a $50 million-plus opening while Paramount is keeping its estimates at $40 million.

“Masters of the Universe,” based on an animated series and franchise that was last on the big screen in 1987, is estimated for a $35-40 million opening while posting by far the biggest production budget at a reported $170 million. “The Amazing Digital Circus,” which was added to the summer slate just two months ago, is looking for a more modest $11-12 million weekend.

Scary Movie 6
“Scary Movie 6” (Paramount Pictures)

Wazzup, Wayans?

Paramount couldn’t have asked for a better pop culture environment for “Scary Movie.” At a time when two horror films — one original and the other based on a whole new kind of online-originated IP — are dominating the box office and the zeitgeist, here comes the return of a series that lampooned the biggest horror films of the 90s and 2000s like “Scream,” “The Ring,” and “Saw.”

And this time, it comes from the Wayans Brothers, who directed the first two films in the series before the “Naked Gun” duo of David Zucker and Pat Proft took over for the next three installments. The Wayans and Paramount have put all their chips on a marketing campaign that flaunts the new film’s edgy, politically incorrect humor, with posters featuring QR codes that link to digital marketing and include the warning “Don’t Scan if You’re Easily Offended.”

The obvious core audience for “Scary Movie” will be millennials with fond memories of seeing the original series back in middle or high school, but Paramount is hoping that younger moviegoers will also be interested in the film’s sendups of today’s big horror hits like “Sinners,” “Smile” and “Terrifier.” Paramount also set the stage for this franchise’s return by reviving one of the original film’s most memorable targets, “Scream,” allowing the Wayans to mine that nostalgia for the famous scene where Ghostface reenacts the Bud Light “Wazzup?” commercial.

And with no other mainstream adult comedies on the horizon, “Scary Movie” will remain a unique offering in theaters for weeks to come. The film’s review embargo hasn’t dropped at time of writing, but the critics are irrelevant for this one, as “Scary Movie” has always been a franchise met with tepid at-best critical reception even for its highest grossing releases.

It’s all on whether the audience laughs at what the Wayans have in store.

Kristen Wiig, Idris Elba, Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes and Tom Wilton in ‘Masters of the Universer’ (Amazon MGM Studios)

Does He-Man still have any power?

Conversely, the “Backrooms”/”Obsession” phenomenon could not have come at a worse time for “Masters of the Universe.” As “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” a film from a franchise that has had far more cultural relevance in the 21st century than the world of Adam, Skeletor and Eternia, collapses fast at the box office, much of the conversation in Hollywood has been about how the under-30 crowd is clearly choosing two films with fresh new takes on horror over a franchise sci-fi film.

And that under-30 crowd is who “Masters of the Universe” needs to be a success against its tentpole budget. Directed by “Bumblebee” filmmaker Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galitzine, “Masters of the Universe” is pure escapist fantasy with Marvel-esque self-aware humor, as Adam Glenn leaves behind his dreary life on Earth to reclaim his place as Prince of Eternia and as the mighty protector He-Man.

Knight’s film has gotten generally good reviews, holding a 75% Rotten Tomatoes score at time of writing. But is that going to be enough? “The Mandalorian and Grogu” got positive audience marks with an A- on CinemaScore and an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score, and the wider audience still largely said “no thanks,” serving “Mando” with the worst second weekend drop for any Memorial Day weekend No. 1 release.

“Masters of the Universe” could very well end up as a higher budget version of another Amazon MGM release this year: “Crime 101,” a well-reviewed heist film clearly inspired by Michael Mann’s “Heat” that brought in nostalgic Gen X men but could never turn that buzz into turnout from a wider audience — especially the under-30 crowd.

Perhaps some teens, coaxed by their nostalgic parents, will capture their dads’ love for He-Man. Amazon MGM is certainly hoping that with “Mandalorian” fading fast and the preponderance of R-Rated offerings in theaters, including “Scary Movie,” that “Masters of the Universe” can find some traction among families that can help build the film’s audience. But with “Backrooms” drawing an opening weekend crowd that is 44% under the age of 21, how many Gen Z and Gen A moviegoers out there are going to watch their parents’ stories, characters and worlds in theaters when they have stories, characters and worlds of their own?

Goodbye to the ‘Circus’

Over the past three years, an independently made animated psychological drama called “The Amazing Digital Circus” has built a feverish fanbase for itself in much the same way Kane Parsons did with “Backrooms.” Its success has become a calling card for its production company, Glitch, which is trying to build a new way for animators to get their stories out into the world outside of the mainstream Hollywood system.

And now, Glitch is going to give theatrical a try. Partnering with Fathom in the U.S. and indie distributors in other parts of the world like European outlet Piece of Magic Entertainment, the ninth and final episode of “The Amazing Digital Circus” will screen in theaters two weeks ahead of its YouTube release on June 19. It’s a path that Fathom has carved with series like the indie Christian Gospel adaptation “The Chosen,” and which Hollywood has pursued with offerings like Netflix’s “Stranger Things” finale and Crunchyroll’s releases of anime films based off of hit TV series like “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.”

As TheWrap first reported back in April, “Digital Circus” drew $5 million in presales in its first 72 hours, and similar to Markiplier’s “Iron Lung,” hundreds of theaters reached out to Fathom asking to add the film to their screens. As of Tuesday, “Digital Circus” has reached $9 million in presales as it hits domestic theaters with a screen count of approximately 2,200.

To be clear, “The Amazing Digital Circus” won’t have the explosion of Gen Z and Gen A turnout that “Backrooms” got. This is the final episode of an online miniseries that will be on YouTube for free in two weeks, meaning that continuity lockout will keep interest in the film almost entirely confined to pre-existing fans and will surely keep walk-up ticket sales to a minimum.

But the similarity to “Backrooms” and “Iron Lung” is this film’s place in a larger experiment of bringing indie, web-based IP to theaters in the hopes of attracting fans interested in experiencing those franchises in an auditorium full of fellow fans instead of at home on a computer. If this works for Glitch, we may see future episodes of its next wave of animated series like “Gameoverse” get similar advance releases in theaters.

Usually, by early May, the fates of TV shows are decided as the networks finish their runs. This coincides with the upfronts, which detail the shows for the next season. However, now and then, a show “on the bubble” may have to wait a while before finding out whether it’s getting renewed.

Such a case is The Hunting Party, as, per Deadline, NBC has canceled the crime drama after just two seasons. This comes four weeks after the airing of the season 2 finale on May 7, which is now the series finale. However, it does sound like the show may be shopped around.

The end of the show is little surprise. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the ratings for season 2 averaged a meager 3.7 million viewers when including DVR playback, down 13% from the first season. The show had a mild boost when its first season aired on Netflix, but most had predicted it was likely to be canceled given its poor performance.

Premiering in January 2025, The Hunting Party starred Melissa Roxburgh as Rebecca “Bex” Henderson, a former FBI profiler who’s brought into a special assignment. She’s told of “The Pit,” a secret underground prison where the government keeps the world’s most dangerous serial killers, masterminds, and more, all of whom the world believes to be dead.

A massive explosion causes a mass breakout, and Bex has to lead a team tracking the fugitives down. The series co-starred Patrick Sabongui as CIA agent Jacob Hassani, Josh McKenzie as Pit prison officer Shane Florence, and Sara Garcia as Army intelligence officer Jennifer Morales.

The show became more notable in the second season with some familiar guest stars appearing as the “killer of the week.” That included Kelsey Grammer, Elizabeth Gillies, Eric McCormack, Niecy Nash, John Corbett, and Roxburgh’s former Manifest co-star Josh Dallas.

The show ended the second season with the team stopping corrupt Colonel Lazarus (Kari Matchett), who was attempting to turn the prisoners into her private army. The final scene had them met by a government official who wanted them to take over the Pit while revealing there were far more escapees than they thought who had been trained to become serial killers.

That was clearly meant to set up a third season while still closing out the main plotlines. Could this still happen?

One would expect the show to be done for good. However, the Deadline article does discuss the possibility of the show being shopped around, as Peacock viewing numbers are sometimes stronger than those for the regular NBC broadcast. It also appears to have gained viewership on Netflix.

It would be ironic for Netflix to pick up the series, as it did for Manifest, which starred Roxburgh. The show isn’t too high-budget, with most of the money going to the guest star of the week, and Netflix can help with drawing in actors. It may seem like a long shot, yet if the producers can strike a deal and Netflix sees a way to get a fun procedural drama to boost its ranks, it may happen.

That’s up in the air, but for now, it looks like The Hunting Party is sadly done for.

The Hunting Party is streaming on Peacock.

Usually, by early May, the fates of

Inside the Yaamava’ Theater, a casino-adjacent venue in Highland, Calif., a crowd of mostly women in their 20s and 30s assembled on a late April evening, cocktails in hand.

“Do you know how euphoric I am?” one woman squealed to her friend.

The Jonas Brothers were about to perform.

Most of the fans had grown up with the group. They were there when the brothers became mid-2000s teen heartthrobs who sold more than 17 million albums; there when the band broke up in 2013 to pursue solo projects; and there when they reunited in 2019 and had their first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Sucker.”

Nick, 33, is used to the fanfare that has followed him and his older siblings — Joe, 36, and Kevin, 38 — for the past 21 years. But backstage before the Highland concert, Nick was soft-spoken as he sipped a can of grapefruit La Croix and thoughtfully discussed his life. His vibe was more introspective businessman than cocksure rock star.

“There’s a certain indescribable thing that happens when the three of us make music together,” he said. “Our fan base has really stood by us, and our connection with them is so much deeper than just a successful song or a moment.”

Perhaps it’s not surprising then that Nick is intent on defying the traditional boy-band-to-solo-star path. He’s currently attempting something Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Harry Styles didn’t: permanently return to the group that made him famous while also pursuing significant solo endeavors.

On breaks during this Jonas Brothers tour, Nick shot the holiday horror film “White Elephant” and reprised his role as Jefferson McDonough for the third time in “Jumanji: Open World” (out Dec. 25). He also released his fifth solo album, “Sunday Best,” in January and embarked on a mini solo tour.

Now, he stars with Paul Rudd in “Power Ballad” (in theaters), a music-filled dramedy from John Carney, of “Once” and “Sing Street” acclaim.

When Carney began casting “Power Ballad,” he knew he wanted an actual musician in the role of Danny Wilson, a former boy bander who is desperate to escape his past. But when Carney floated Nick’s name for the role, he was met with pushback.

“A few other people were like, wasn’t he a teen star? Will it Disney-fy the movie?” Carney recalled in a video interview from Ireland. Instead, the director said, Nick “really humanized it. He darkened it. He made the character mercurial and mysterious and enigmatic.”

In the film, Danny crosses paths with Rick (Rudd), a wedding singer who never hit it big, and the two spend a tipsy evening jamming together. When Danny records a version of a song Rick played for him and it becomes a hit, a fight for credit ensues.

It helped that Nick had partially lived Danny’s experience of longing for industry respect (minus the plagiarism). After Nick initiated the Jonas Brothers’s breakup in 2013, he shaved his head, gained 20 pounds of muscle, released the sexually charged, multiplatinum solo tracks “Jealous” and “Chains,” and played a closeted M.M.A. fighter in the drama series “Kingdom.” He even considered dropping his last name and creating an alter ego to truly break free.

“My whole life,” Nick said, “was leading up to me actually being able to do this with the context needed to do it.”

GROWING UP IN WYCKOFF, N.J., where his father was a Pentecostal pastor, Nick was the first Jonas brother to show a desire for the spotlight. He often roped his siblings into performing self-produced plays or required the entire family to attend his one-man shows in the basement.

Soon, a prepubescent Nick landed parts on Broadway in “A Christmas Carol,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Les Misérables.” And he inspired his brothers to follow suit.

“I brought a girl that I had a crush on to see Nick onstage, and she was like, ‘That was amazing,’” Joe said backstage in Highland. “That day, I was like, ‘I want to be a singer.’”

At 12 years old, Nick released a solo Christian album with Columbia Records. Soon after, in 2005, Nick, Joe and Kevin were signed as a secular group to Columbia and later to Disney’s Hollywood Records, where they put out three studio albums, heavy with teenage pining. Disney also recruited the brothers to appear in the “Camp Rock” TV films and their own comedy series on Disney Channel.

Early on, Nick was positioned as the group’s leader, despite being the youngest of the three. (There is also a fourth Jonas brother: Franklin, 25.)

“I was like, great, someone else, please. I don’t need to lead. I just want to have fun,” Kevin said backstage. “He was young, but his focus was being the best at what we were doing. And he still is that same way.”

The Disney machine helped push their fame to new heights. Nick dated Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, and their fledgling relationships became teen tabloid gossip. And then there were the brothers’ purity rings, which they wore for a time in a pledge of abstinence, that made them fodder for “South Park” and media pundits. The pressures of fame were intense.

“I think I handled it OK to the degree that the armor never really cracked, but there were days that were really difficult, and I didn’t have the tools then — the tools being therapy,” Nick said. “I just kind of went into my hard shell and waited till I was an adult to unpack it.”

Before the Highland concert, I sat in the empty theater and watched the Jonas Brothers do a sound check with their band. The siblings were all consummate professionals, but only Nick chimed in with a series of performance tweaks: “Try going from the F sharp to the E”; “Invert the end of the riff”; “Before we go into the outro just hit the ‘hey, hey, heys.’”

The brothers have always played their own instruments and written or co-written their own music. But their audience was, initially, teenage girls — an oft-dismissed demographic presumed to lack critical taste — and Nick put pressure on himself to “get better” and prove his worth.

“With whatever level of admiration and success that we had, there was also equally, if not louder at times, or it’s just what you’re choosing to hear, criticism,” he said in a follow-up video interview from a tour stop in Buenos Aires. “It wasn’t hard to stay humble because I felt like I was always hearing more of that than praise.”

Even now, his first days on a new project are anxiety-ridden. “The first call is never, ‘Oh, I feel great about how it went today,’” he said. “It’s always, ‘I think no one thinks I’m good.’”

But on the “Power Ballad” set, Nick delivered an understated performance that left his co-star, Rudd, impressed. One scene in particular, Rudd said in a phone interview, “broke my heart.”

“It’s the look in his eyes. He does it so subtly, and it’s like, wow, that guy — not that guy, that actor — that actor knows what he’s doing right there,” Rudd said. “It was very apparent that there’s real depth to him.”

THERE SEEMS TO BE TENSION between the ambitious solo career that Nick is once again seeking and the nostalgic comforts of the Jonas Brothers, which have included them playing heightened versions of themselves in a campy 2025 Disney holiday film, “A Very Jonas Christmas,” and reprising their “Camp Rock” roles for appearances in “Camp Rock 3” this August.

But Nick doesn’t see it that way.

He now views the Brothers as a “home base” and said he has been inspired by “the K-pop model,” watching how groups like BTS and Blackpink stay together as a unit, while also allowing their members to find individual success. Nick doesn’t foresee them disbanding again.

“We’re focused on legacy at this point as a family,” he said. The trio started a podcast, and Nick serves as a producer on many of his upcoming film projects through their production company, Powered by Jonas.

Nick, who is based in Los Angeles, also has a family of his own with the actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas and their daughter, Malti Marie, 4.

In a phone interview, Chopra Jonas said she was initially attracted to Nick’s sincerity and kindness, and they have connected over a love of creative pursuits.

“On our honeymoon, we wrote two TV shows,” Chopra Jonas said. “We were just sitting there by the beach and came up with characters and built a world, and then abandoned it along the way, of course. But the thing we do for fun is create.”

Last year, Nick returned to Broadway to star in “The Last Five Years.” And recently, he’s been quietly developing an original stage musical about Hans and Margret Rey, the married couple who created Curious George.

“About eight years ago, I was at home, and I just had this sudden urge to figure out Curious George’s origin story and who the creators were,” Nick said. “So, I went down an infinite rabbit hole.”

The show is still a work in progress, but Nick has already written four or five original songs and said he is collaborating with the Reys’ estate, along with the playwright Peter Duchan (“Dogfight”) and the producer Aaron Glick (“Purpose”). Separately, Nick hopes to develop a jukebox musical that uses the Jonas Brothers’s catalog to tell an original story.

His long-term plan involves performing, writing and producing film, TV and music projects. (Despite having expressed an interest in politics and a presidential run in the past, Nick said that’s “absolutely not” a desire anymore.)

“That’s the big picture vision,” he said. “And then when something comes in and is great, I scrap it all and go, I want to do this.”

Few characters have reached the screen through as many major cinematic universes as Marvel’s Spider-Man. The web-slinger anchored a run of separate continuities over the past two decades, each telling its own version of the hero through different actors, tones, and eras. Sony Pictures and Marvel keep finding fresh corners of the Multiverse for Peter Parker and the heroes who follow him. Now they have debuted one more major cinematic Spider-Man universe.

Spider-Noir, the live-action series starring Nicolas Cage, premiered worldwide on Prime Video on May 27, following an early domestic launch on MGM+ on May 25. The eight-episode show drops a masked vigilante into a crime-soaked 1930s New York, and this Depression-era setting plays out in an entirely new reality, one that stands apart from every Spider-Man universe before it. Spider-Noir just became the next major cinematic Spider-Man universe, and the first to exist only on television.

Amazon Prime Video

Cage plays Ben Reilly, an aging private investigator who once protected the city as its only masked hero, the Spider. A personal tragedy pushed him out of that life years earlier. Mobsters, monsters, and a femme fatale drag him back into it. This version of Spider-Man is a hard-boiled detective rather than a young, quippy teenager.

Sony Pictures Television produced the TV-14-rated series in association with Amazon MGM Studios, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo behind the animated Spider-Verse films, among the executive producers. Prime Video released all eight episodes at once in two formats, a black-and-white cut and a full-color version. Critics responded warmly, and the show opened at 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the strongest debuts in the Spider-Man franchise.

Cage already voiced a version of this hero. He played Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the 2018 animated film. The new series shares no continuity with that movie.

Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man (Earth-199999)

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, swinging through New York.
Marvel Studios

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker swings through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the reality Marvel designates Earth-199999. Spider-Man: Far From Home was the first time the universe was referenced out loud on screen when Mysterio referred to it as Earth-616. Holland first appeared in Captain America: Civil War, headlined three solo films, and fought alongside the Avengers across the Infinity Saga.

Spider-Man: No Way Home cracked the Multiverse open and pulled earlier screen versions of the character into his world. In that film, a spell by Doctor Strange erased Peter Parker from everyone’s memory, setting up his next chapter in a fourth film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Miles Morales Spider-Man Universe (Earth-1610)

Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures Animation gave Miles Morales his own continuity in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, set on Earth-1610. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, widened the canvas into a vast Multiverse of Spider-people and named several rival realities along the way. The franchise will close its current arc with Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe/ Venom Universe (Earth-688)

Sony Pictures

Sony launched a villain-led franchise with Venom in 2018, a reality later marked as Earth-688. Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock headlined a trilogy, and the universe grew with Morbius, Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and Kraven the Hunter. Spider-Man himself never appeared. Poor reviews and weak returns prompted Sony to pause the film slate after Kraven the Hunter in late 2024. Spider-Noir now arrives under the same Sony Pictures banner, though it occupies a separate reality of its own.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Universe (Earth-96283)

Tobey Maguire plays Spider-Man in Sam Raimi's trilogy.
Sony Pictures

Sam Raimi’s films starring Tobey Maguire defined modern superhero cinema in the 2000s, in a reality designated Earth-96283. The trilogy began with Spider-Man in 2002 and ended with Spider-Man 3 in 2007. Maguire returned to the role in No Way Home, almost two decades later, and delivered a performance that left many Spider-Man fans nostalgic.

The Earth-96283 continuity is one of the most intriguing Spider-Man universes, not just because of Maguire but also its villains. Raimi’s trilogy featured deadly antagonists like the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, and Venom.

Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Universe (Earth-120703)

Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man.
Sony Pictures

Andrew Garfield took over as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man, a reality marked as Earth-120703. The reboot produced two films before Sony changed course. Garfield, like Maguire, returned for No Way Home, which united three live-action versions of the wall-crawler for the first time.

Just like Maguire’s Spider-Man universe, Garfield’s era also had its allure. The films featured some of the best cinematic shots ever made in a Spider-Man film. It’s also one of the most tragic Spider-Man iterations.

Spider-Man & X-Men Animated Series Universe (Earth-92131)

Spider-Man in Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
Marvel

Long before the modern films, Marvel’s heroes shared an animated reality known as Earth-92131. Spider-Man: The Animated Series ran in the mid-1990s in that continuity, alongside X-Men: The Animated Series and other Saturday-morning staples. Its final arc sent the hero hopping between dimensions and even crossing paths with a live-action cameo, an early television swing at the kind of multiversal storytelling the movies would later perfect.

Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman Universe The Direct Image

The animated Spider-Verse films swung open the door to a crowd of additional realities. These belong to one animated franchise rather than standing as separate film series, so they widen the on-screen web of the Spider-Verse films. Gwen Stacy’s Earth-65 leads this pack. There, the radioactive spider bit her instead of Peter Parker, and she became Spider-Woman. Hailee Steinfeld voices her in Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, where her bond with Miles adds to much of the emotions of the second film.

Peter B. Parker (Earth-616B)

Sony Pictures

The older, worn-down Peter B. Parker calls Earth-616B home. Jake Johnson voices the divorced, out-of-shape hero who reluctantly mentors Miles and slowly stumbles back toward purpose. His reality mirrors the mainstream comics Earth-616, so the films mark it with a B to keep the two apart.

Spider-Man Noir (Earth-90214)

Spider-Man Noir in Into the Spider-Verse.
Sony Pictures

Earth-90214 holds the original Spider-Man Noir, the 1930s black-and-white detective Cage first voiced in Into the Spider-Verse. That animated version sticks with Peter Parker and trades color for hard shadows. The new live-action Spider-Noir borrows the same pulp flavor, yet it tells a fresh story with Ben Reilly in a reality all its own, which keeps the two versions firmly apart.

Spider-Ham (Earth-8311)

Peter Parker holding a camera.
Sony Pictures

A radioactive pig bit a spider on Earth-8311, producing Peter Porker, better known as Spider-Ham. John Mulaney voices the cartoon hero, and his universe runs on Looney Tunes logic.

Peni Parker (Earth-14512)

Peni Parker and her psychic mech suit.
Sony Pictures

Peni Parker hails from Earth-14512, a far-future, anime-styled reality. She pilots a psychic mech suit called SP//dr, linked to a radioactive spider she shares a mental bond with. Kimiko Glenn voices the character in both animated films.

Spider-Man 2099 (Earth-928)

Miguel O'Hara from Earth-928.
Sony Pictures

Miguel O’Hara guards Earth-928 in the year 2099 as the brooding Spider-Man 2099. Oscar Isaac voices him as the stern leader of the Spider-Society, the multiversal task force at the center of Across the Spider-Verse. His wrist device makes safe travel between realities possible.

Spider-Man India (Earth-50101)

Pavitr Prabhakar the protector of Mumbattan.
Sony Pictures

Pavitr Prabhakar protects Mumbattan on Earth-50101, a city that blends Mumbai and Manhattan into one. Karan Soni voices the upbeat Spider-Man India, who arrived as a scene-stealer in Across the Spider-Verse.

Miles G. Morales (Earth-42)

Miles G. Morales, the evil version of Miles Morales.
Sony Pictures

Earth-42 closes the loop on the whole saga. The radioactive spider that bit Miles came from there, and that reality’s own Miles grew up without a Spider-Man, turning into the Prowler instead. Across the Spider-Verse left this darker Miles G. Morales as its biggest cliffhanger, a thread Beyond the Spider-Verse looks set to resolve.

Discovering an online casino that truly appeals

What do you do after helping defeat a sociopathic Supe determined to rule mankind as a walking fascist god? If you’re Jack Quaid, you put on one of the funniest motion-capture suits ever for your strange new starring role in the next God of War game. PlayStation provided a behind-the-scenes look at how the cast for God of War Laufey brought their characters to life. And it includes The Boys‘ Hughie doing what he does best – fully committing to a role no matter what it takes. In this case, Jack Quaid is doing some serious acting as a… gelatinous cube?

PlayStation introduced the performers for its upcoming God of War Laufey in a short “Meet the Cast” video. (Which we first heard about at GameSpot.) In addition to Quaid, the God of War cast includes franchise alum Deborah Ann Woll. She’s back, in a much bigger role, as games will play as the legendary warrior Faye.

Perlina Lau will also make her video game debut as Rue, in what is an unusual character. Rue is the conscious “badass” ribbons attached to Faye’s sword who always points out danger to her wielder. That is until the fighting starts. Then Rue is ready to roll. Or….like….whip? Swing? Flutter in the breeze?

Then there’s Quaid’s God of War character…

Jack Quaid being silly in a motion-capture suit surrounded by a cube of plastic tubes for God of War Laufey
PlayStation

So why does his motion-capture suit include a big bulky cube of plastic tubing? Because yes, as mentioned, he’s playing a cube. Well, technically, he’s playing Phranque, a cosmic cube from The Everywhen. Quaid shares of his God of War cube character, “Phranque is … a cosmic cube that you meet in this world called the Everywhen. When you start playing this game, you get the feeling that the Everywhen is in trouble and Phranque will stop at nothing to protect all the living creatures that inhabit this world.”

Absurd, yes, which is why Jack Quaid was perfect for this God of War role. No one does absurd better. But that’s not the only reason he was the man to play Phranque. That cosmic cube is also highly protective of every living thing in The Everywhen, the setting where the games takes place. And we all know the man who brought Hughie to life on The Boys knows how to convey genuine care and concern.

And that he’s also willing to look as silly as possible to make it happen… While walking around portraying a box.

Nintendo will reportedly broadcast a new Nintendo Direct presentation next week.

That’s according to reliable insider Nate the Hate, who claimed in his latest YouTube video that the showcase will take place soon.

“We are in the month of June and expectations are there will be a Direct in the near future,” he said. “Do these claims have merit? When will Nintendo begin to discuss their 2026 plans with us after Star Fox and Rhythm Heaven and Splatoon Raiders? What does the rest of 2026 look like from Nintendo?

“We’ll be getting that answer very soon, as from what I have heard, the Nintendo Direct will take place next week, the second week of June. And just to be clear, that that is the week of the 8th.”

If a Nintendo Direct does indeed take place next week, it will be the first major general Nintendo Direct in nine months – the last one aired back in September 2025 and focused on the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.

There have been a further nine presentations since then, but these have either been Partner Showcases, Indie Worlds, Pokémon Presents or focused on a single release (such as Kirby Air Riders, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Star Fox or The Super Mario Galaxy Movie).

Only a handful of upcoming first-party Switch 2 titles are currently officially confirmed. Only one of these, Rhythm Heaven Groove, is coming to the original Switch (on July 2).

In terms of Switch 2 titles, Star Fox is set for release on June 25, Splatoon Raiders is following on July 23, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is planned for later this year.
