The art of the iconic music video has been, if not entirely lost to time, at the very least declining these past few years. Doja Cat is one of the form’s few remaining practitioners, and the clip for her new single, “Demons,” is a miniature horror film that’s creepier and more fun than pretty much anything Blumhouse put out last year. Her marketing strategy around her forthcoming album, Scarlet, seems to be, simply, “freak people out,” and the clip for “Demons”—in which she, made up as a demon in full-body prosthetics, ruins Christina Ricci’s life—certainly fits the bill.

A great music video is kind of moot if the song itself doesn’t deliver, which “Demons” does: Rapping over a disorienting, bass-heavy beat that sounds a little like a pop-ified version of something Tyler, the Creator might have made circa Goblin, Doja adopts the same laissez-faire-but-not-really attitude toward haters as on “Paint the Town Red,” her recent TikTok hit. Her lyrics, delivered in a clipped baby voice, are simple and effective: “Are you off a key/I would never let you in my VIP/We are enemies, we are foes/Who are you? And what are those?” Moments later, she begins to rap with an even more clipped flow, adopting the unnatural rhythms of a text-to-speech app. As with much of Doja’s recent output, it’s smart, sinister, and knowingly dumb, all at the same time.

There’s hardly a better feeling than wrapping up production on a film you worked so hard on. Once you send your movie to theaters or a streaming service, it’s time to celebrate with a wrap party. This tradition lets the cast and crew relax with a night full of fun.

How should the team celebrate? These six ideas will make your celebration unforgettable.

1. Hand Out Awards

The crew put blood, sweat and tears into production, so it’s only right to recognize their hard work with awards. Be creative and allow the accolades to transcend best actor and actress. Filmmakers can have fun with the trophies and create laughter and camaraderie with their cast and crew.

For example, if an actor frequently spills beverages, hand them an award for the most likely to cause a mess on set. This ceremony can also be an opportunity to recognize the crew members who don’t get enough credit. The actors and directors often get recognition, but set designers, makeup artists and sound engineers can quietly put a movie over the top with their efforts.

Cast and crew recognition is essential because it boosts their confidence and increases the likelihood they work for you again. Research shows 29% of employees say they don’t get enough recognition at work, so filmmakers can change this trend with awards.

2. Give Gifts

Trophies are friendly gestures for your hardworking crew, and you can go further with gifts for the entire team. No official title or award is necessary to show appreciation, so find something for everyone. Filmmakers could get every member the same present to ensure fairness or personalize items to make them even more special.

Keep tabs on what the cast and crew say they need while filming. They may complain about their wired headphones, so gifting a pair of wireless earbuds would be thoughtful and practical.

Actors may appreciate if the set or costume designers saved a specific item for them to keep as memorabilia. The gift options are endless, so be thoughtful and open-minded.

3. Play Games

A party isn’t complete without games. Plan various activities for the cast and crew to enjoy throughout the evening. One idea is to hold a trivia night. The categories could center on film locations or ask questions about the cast and crew. This trivia idea brings everyone together and provides one last bonding session before they go their separate ways.

Wrap parties also present the opportunity for themed games. For example, the event’s theme could be Las Vegas, with various card games around the facility. If the crew likes stimulating activities, play a few rounds of Mafia or Werewolf. They are excellent for wrap parties because they involve role-playing, teamwork and strategy.

Ensure the games are appropriate for the party. For example, Cards Against Humanity is for adults and might not be suitable if children are around. Play charades or Pictionary for a more family-friendly environment.

4. Show Your Film

How can the cast and crew best celebrate the movie they just created? Watch the film at the wrap party for a premiere. Providing an exclusive first look would be meaningful for everybody in the production — especially if the filmmaker thinks they have a masterpiece on their hands.

Encourage the crew to bring their spouses and children to the premiere so they can see everybody’s hard work on display. Ensure you provide enough food and beverages for everyone.

5. Bring on the Drinks

The wrap party is a time for celebration and relaxation, so filmmakers should ensure they have an eclectic blend of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages available for the partygoers. If children are present, ensure you provide a wide selection of water, lemonade, sodas and various juices.

You can be more creative with alcoholic beverages. Give the selection a theme or make it fit with the season. For example, a summer wrap party is an excellent time for blonde ales, so serve Good Morning Vietnam from the Wooden Robot Brewery or Baby Genius from the Bissell Brothers Brewing Co.

The crowd will want more robust and warmer beers in the winter. The holiday season is a terrific opportunity to try Gingerbread Yeti from the Great Divide Brewing Co. or Santa’s Private Reserve from Rogue Ales.

6. Theme the Food

You’ll have a great party if you have good food. The selection is critical for a wrap party, so filmmakers should ensure they have plenty of things to eat. After all, they know how food boosts morale on set, so it can make everyone happy at the wrap party. Offerings should include vegetarian and vegan options.

One way to make the wrap party fun is to give the food a theme. Barbecue is an easy idea that leads to incredible tastes for meats, fruits and vegetables. Internationally themed food will be fitting if the film is set in a foreign location or different culture.

For example, a film with a New Delhi setting could serve chicken biryani, palak paneer, chaat or other famous delicacies. In this instance, it would be wise to order Indian food from a catering service specializing in this cuisine. If the budget is tight, filmmakers could always ask the crew to do the wrap party potluck style.

Wrapping up a Terrific Production

Depending on your budget and schedule, film production could take months or even years. The 12-16-hour days are strenuous, but it’s all worth it when you celebrate with your cast and crew.

Use these six ideas to make your wrap party a memorable night.

  • Monica Garcia is a new cast member on RHOSLC season 4.
  • Monica has four children.
  • Monica is getting divorced from her husband for the second time.

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is introducing a new cast member in season 4. Monica Garcia joins the group of women following Jen Shah‘s exit from the show due to her five-and-a-half-year prison sentence. And interestingly enough, Monica actually has a surprising connection to Jen that viewers will learn about on the first episode that premieres September 5.

So, who is Monica Garcia? From what we know so far, Monica is going to bring the heat to the chilly Bravo franchise. Here’s everything you need to know about Monica.

Monica Garcia

Monica is a mom.

Monica has four children that she’s raising on her own. She posts pictures of her adorable kids on her Instagram, where she has over 268,000 followers.

Monica is getting divorced — again.

Fans will see Monica dealing with getting divorced from her husband for the second time on the new season of RHOSLC. In addition, Monica has to navigate “a volatile relationship with her mom,” according to Bravo’s press release for season 4.

Monica has her own business.

Monica is the founder and creative director of a baby products business called Brea Baby. The Brea Baby website says that the company creates “stylish, unique, organic, one of a kind pieces” for parents and their babies.

Monica is friends with Angie K.

Monica is introduced to the other women on the show by her pal Angie Katsanevas. In a sneak peek of the first episode, Angie organizes a lunch with herself, Monica, and Lisa Barlow. Monica immediately stirs the pot by telling Lisa it’s “a privilege” that her husband John Barlow cooks for her. In a confessional, Monica claims that she knows “dark secrets” about all the other women.

Monica has a connection to Jen Shah.

Monica knew Jen before she joined the show — and more of that is revealed on the first episode. In the preview clip, Monica reveals her past connection with Lisa through Jen.

“I would talk to Lisa constantly, because Jen would get sick and tired of talking to her, and she would hand me the phone, and then I’d have to be like, ‘Yeah, girl, I know,’ ” Monica says in a confessional. If that clip is any indication, Monica is not going to hold back during her time on RHOSLC.

Indie studios IFC Films and Neon are facing off with the hopes of one of their films being selected as France’s official submission to the Oscars for the international feature film prize.

Neon aims to position Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall” as the best option for the country. IFC is making its case for “The Taste of Things” from French-Vietnamese filmmaker Trần Anh Hùn, who won the director prize at Cannes. Both films have eerily similar credentials as they seek to represent the Gallic state at the 95th annual Academy Awards.

The courtroom drama “Anatomy” was announced as part of the Telluride program, where all four of its screenings were sold out, with dozens of patrons being turned away. “Taste” was not part of the festival’s initial slate announcement. It was one of the surprise TBA screenings that Telluride tends to program every year (others this year included Sony Classics’ animated film “They Shot the Piano Player”).

“Taste” is a film made for “foodies.” It played to two packed houses on Saturday and Sunday. Both movies are headed to more fests including Toronto, the New York Film Festival and other planned stops. The decision on France’s Oscar submission will be made by the Centre national de la cinématographie, affiliated with the French Ministry of Culture. Some new and recognizable names are among the committee tasked with steering the process, including former Lionsgate executive Patrick Wachsberger and composer Alexandre Desplat, a two-time Oscar winner.

And here lies a nation’s dilemma.

Cannes is one of the most prestigious festivals in the world where the Palme d’Or has carried many films to awards glory like Bong Joon-ho’s best picture winner “Parasite” (2019), which was also distributed by Neon.

In 2021, France opted for Neon’s high-octane car-mutation thriller “Titane” by Julia Ducournau, who became the first solo woman director to win the Palme. With many critics acknowledging it was a “hard sell” for Oscar voters, many rooted that year for IFC’s abortion drama “Happening” from Audrey Diwan, to be the country’s selection.

When you’re a country facing scrutiny over gender equality in many sectors, including the film and TV arenas, how could you note choose the first female Palme winner for a solo effort. But “Titane” failed to make the international feature film shortlist of 15 films. “Happening” mounted its own awards campaign around its U.S. release for the 2022 season but it was shutout by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters.

France has submitted 67 films for Oscar consideration going back to the category’s inception (as foreign film) in 1956. Of those films, 38 have achieved Oscar nominations, the most of any country. France has won nine times, second to Italy’s 11. But France has been suffering through a 30 year drought when it comes to bringing home the gold. France hasn’t won the statuette since “Indochine” (1992), and it’s clear that national hopes are high that the 2023 race may finally be the year.

The French committee faces a complicated decision, with each film having pros and cons in its ability to compete in the Oscar heat. In addition, with new Academy Awards competition rules instituted this year, now stipulating the opt-in member selection committees must comprise at least 50% filmmakers (artists and/or craftspeople), there will be “X-factors” affecting the process this year for sure.

“Anatomy” is getting the full FYC push from Neon, in categories beyond international feature. The distributor aims to grab recognition for Triet for director and original screenplay, along with a mention for lead actress Sandra Hüller. Hüller has dual contenders in the international feature race this year as the star of A24’s “The Zone of Interest,” which is the frontrunner for the U.K.

“Anatomy” is a strong piece of filmmaking that I suspect, at minimum, will find Hüller in the mix for her first Oscar nom. She seems to be a quintessential future winner of NYFCC and LAFCA. I’m curious to read how much of the film is not in English. Academy rules state in order to be eligible, at least 50% of a film’s dialogue must be spoken in a language other than English. While I believe “Anatomy” clears the mark, I wonder if the language factor will have any affect on voters?

With “Taste,” it has the familiarity of one of the country’s most revered actress, Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche, delivering another standout performance. IFC vows to seek nominations in all eligible categories. It could find its way into the discussion for adapted screenplay and obviously for director, following Trần Anh Hùn’s win at Cannes. If nominated for best picture, it would be IFC’s first since “Boyhood” (2014). The film is also co-distributed by Sapan Studio.

Director Anh Hùng was born in South Vietnam. In 1975, he immigrated to France at the age of 12, following the fall of Saigon and the end of Vietnam’s civil war. When it comes to Oscar submissions, France has leaned heavily toward French-born filmmakers. The last two non-French-born directors behind international feature submissions were Paul Verhoeven (2016’s “Elle”) and 2022’s “Saint Omer” from Alice Diop. Both failed to land a nomination.

Ask the strategist behind campaigns for “Anatomy” and “Taste” and both will say their movie is the “safer” and “stronger” title to go the distance to a win. Truth is, it’s going to be a very dynamic and strong year yet again. Films like Japan’s “Perfect Days” and Finland’s “Fallen Leaves,” which also screened at Cannes and Telluride, are expected to be viable contenders.

France will announce its five-film shortlist this week. It’s expected to include Johnny Depp’s comeback movie “Jeanne du Barry,” directed by Maiwenn.

Academy members choose to opt-in to watch and vote for the international feature submission. Preliminary voting for the international feature shortlist begins in December, with 15 films being announced on prior to the start of nomination voting in January.

EXCLUSIVE: Here’s your first look at COUP!, a period satire starring Peter Sarsgaard and directed by Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman.

Set on a seaside estate in the United States during the 1918 Spanish Flu, the pic follows a Progressive journalist (Billy Magnussen) and his socialite wife (Sarah Gadon) who hire a mysterious grifter (Peter Sarsgaard) as a private cook.

Synopsis reads: When the plague descends on the posh island, the family and staff find themselves cut off from society and, like castaways, struggling to survive. The new cook sees an opportunity to rouse his colleagues to re-think their stations and have the run of the mansion for themselves. Their employer suspects the cook’s coup is part of a far more sinister agenda. It is not long before the mind games between master and servant breed an all-out war for dominance over the home. Social restraints crack apart. And civility gives way to animal instincts that lurk beneath.

Sarsgaard (The Batman, The Lost Daughter, Dopesick) stars alongside Billy Magnussen (No Time To Die, The Many Saints of Newark, Game Night), Sarah Gadon (Upcoming Ferrari, Maps to The Stars, Enemy), and Skye P. Marshall (Matlock).

COUP! is produced by Brian Levy for Entertainment 360, Warner Davis and Todd Friedman at Hemlock Circle Productions, and Molly Conners, Amanda Bowers, and Jane Sinisi for Phiphen alongside Harris Gurny. Executive producers include Fabien Westerhoff, Magnussen via his Happy Bad Bungalow banner, and Sarsgaard.

London and Paris-based production, finance, and sales company Film Constellation is handling world sales on the pic. This film will close Venice Days on Sept 9.

“The Great British Baking Show” will not continue its country-themed challenges.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, “Great British Baking Show” producer Kieran Smith noted that changes were made following criticism from culturally insensitive theme weeks in previous seasons.

“We didn’t want to offend anyone but the world has changed and the joke fell flat,” he said of Season 13’s “Mexican Week.” We’re not doing any national themes this year.”

In October 2022, “The Great British Baking Show” faced backlash over its Mexican-themed challenge, in which hosts Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding donned sombreros and serapes while uttering comments that reinforced harmful stereotypes. The show faced a similar debacle with Season 11’s “Japanese Week.”

“We’re doing all the regular weeks: cakes, biscuits, bread, patisserie, chocolate, plus party cakes is a new theme,” Smith added about the upcoming season. “No spoilers, but it features challenges I think viewers will love.”

“We chose this year’s challenges very carefully to be approachable,” said judge Paul Hollywood. “In a way, we’ve returned to the philosophy of the first three series. There are some beautiful classic ones and they’ve been a big success.”

ITV presenter Alison Hammond has joined “The Great British Baking Show” as its new co-host, replacing Matt Lucas after three seasons on the show. She’s the first person of color to serve as a host on the baking competition show, which launched in 2010.

The new season of “The Great British Baking Show” premieres this fall on the U.K.’s Channel 4 before dropping on Netflix.

Hollywood guild leaders representing striking writers and actors rallied their members on Labor Day by stressing their common cause with other unions.

SAG-AFTRA members have been on strike since mid-July in a dispute over streaming pay and automation.

But Jodi Long, president of SAG-AFTRA’s Los Angeles local, said actors were not alone on picket lines.

“SAG-AFTRA member commitment to this fight, our resolve to stay strong and our unique visibility to the world can serve to not only invigorate the entire labor movement, but also to totally change our industry,” wrote Long, an actor and longtime leader in the union, in an email to members.

Long added: “This is a shared fight that finds its strength through the larger labor movement that has swept our country, from UPS employees to hotel workers, the continued organizing of Starbucks and Amazon workers and our WGA sisters and brothers.”

Members of the Writers Guild of America have been on strike for four months over many of the same issues. The protracted twin strikes have disrupted film and TV productions nationwide and caused pain for entertainment businesses and crews that have lost work.

A video shared Monday featuring the WGA’s negotiating committee co-chair, Chris Keyser, similarly emphasized the union’s solidarity with SAG-AFTRA as well as other unions, including the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and the Teamsters.

“For labor all across the country, this is the message: We, and everyone who strikes with us, are the beacon of hope,” Keyser said. “On this Labor Day, the eyes of labor are on us.”

Keyser added: “We are not on strike out of greed, nor do we begrudge the companies their success or deny their struggles…But the changes that the companies have orchestrated in the business have made the profession of writing untenable for us and for everyone who comes after us.”

Representatives for the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios in labor negotiations, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We are deeply committed to ending the strike and are hopeful that the WGA will work toward the same resolution,” alliance President Carol Lombardini said in a statement released last month.

Beyond the world of film and television, Los Angeles has also seen recent labor agitation from fast-food workers, hotel workers and city staffers. Often playing out on scorching sidewalks beneath a hot Southern California sun, the trend is so pronounced as to have garnered the nickname “hot labor summer.”

That’s on top of recent union organizing elsewhere in the country at companies such as Starbucks and Amazon.

“I know that some of us may find this strike personally challenging, and the sacrifice for this collective action may take its toll. But you are not alone,” Long said in her email, linking to a guide to California unemployment benefits and information about financial assistance, food security and other programs.

Long also extended thanks to the union’s negotiating committee, strike captains and picket volunteers.

She added: “Keep cool, stay safe, get some much needed rest and stay strong.”

Long was elected president of the L.A. local — the union’s largest — in 2021.

In a separate email, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, commended the union’s members on their tenacity and said “the issues we’re striking over are an existential threat to the profession of acting.”

He added: “The essence of Labor Day is embodied in you.”

The SAG-AFTRA website lists various marches, rallies and parades planned across the country for Labor Day.

Marvel Studios just announced the return of Jeffrey Wright’s Watcher in I Am Groot’s Season 2.

The character initially appeared in What If…?’s first season, where he led audiences through the MCU Multiverse. His next appearance was meant to be in the animated show’s second season, but continual delays led the cosmic narrator to pop up in an unexpected place next.

The trailer for I Am Groot Season 2 surprised fans when it visually confirmed The Watcher’s inclusion at some point in the next batch of shorts. However, while the character was seen, fans couldn’t tell for sure if Jeffrey Wright would be returning to lend his voice to the character.

Jeffrey Wright Will Return as The Watcher

Marvel

A new press release from Marvel Studios revealed that Jeffrey Wright will return to voice The Watcher in I Am Groot Season 2.

The episode in question is the fifth of the new season and is called “Groot and Great Prophet.” Wright’s Watcher will narrate the adventure and follow Groot as he “finds himself in the heart of an ancient Drez-Lar temple with a mythic prophecy he must fulfill to save the universe.”

I Am Groot director Kristen Lepore confirmed that Jeffrey Wright returned to offer his voice for The Watcher, a process she “absolutely loved:”

“Absolutely loved recording Jeffrey Wright for this one—he was really incredible! The very last thing we did right before wrapping this season was to change up the ball-bouncing sound effects on the final mix stage. Felt good to add a whole new comedic layer in the 11th hour.”

In an interview with ComicBookMovie.com’s Josh Wilding, Lepore shared that including The Watcher in Season 2 of I Am Groot was a “really fun” undertaking, one she didn’t know if Marvel Studios was going to let her do in the first place:

“That was a really fun kind of undertaking. It was also an example of something that we pitched where I was like, ‘I don’t know if [Marvel is] gonna let me do this. But they did, and they were really excited about the prospect of bringing The Watcher in in a very different capacity than we’ve seen him in ‘What If…?’.”

She continued on, making it clear she “can’t say enough good things about that record session [with Jeffrey Wright]:”

“Working with Jeffrey Wright was amazing. Can’t say enough great things about that record session. [He is] such a cool guy. We had actually done three different scratches, you know, like the temporary dialogue for that episode. I did one; we had one of the editors at Marvel, who has a really great Watcher voice, do a few of them. So, I feel like we were just reworking the scratch, you know, to pitch this episode to make sure that it was working. And then we were kind of like, ‘Oh, I don’t know.'”

Lepore went as far as to say, “It was magical to witness [Wright] bring [The Watcher] to life:”

“And then as soon as Jeffrey came in, it was just like boom, there it is—like incredible performance, [he] just knocks it out of the park first time around. I mean, he is The Watcher, like he embodies it so [well]… It was magical to witness him bring that character to life in that capacity and to give him a little bit of a sense of humor that we haven’t always seen.”

Where Else Could The Watcher Show Up?

As great as it is to see Jeffrey Wright’s Watcher show up in different places, I Am Groot probably won’t give the cosmic observer much to do. At the very least, however, it should still be a fun few minutes with everyone’s favorite sentient tree.

While it’s always enjoyable to witness The Watcher in these animated adventures (which is basically what I Am Groot is), fans are still wondering when he’ll end up playing a role in the live-action side of things.

The closest audiences have come so far was an Easter egg in Thor: Love and Thunder. Will fans have to wait until Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars for The Watcher to show his face to the rest of the MCU?

Perhaps The Marvels could surprise fans and give Wright a brief cameo.

In the meantime, Wright will be returning to voice the role of the Watcher in What If…? Season 2, which was just confirmed to be returning this December.

Summary Giancarlo Esposito reveals that

Six years ago, CouchJockey was a small-time Twitch streamer, broadcasting Hearthstone in an attempt to make a name for himself. Today, he’s the creative director for The Convergence, one of the most popular and acclaimed Elden Ring mods, which adds many new bosses and magic spells to the game, as well as overhauling many of its more controversial aspects. It’s been quite a journey for the modder, and he says it all started with a simple “magic mod” for Dark Souls 3, a project that blossomed into something far more ambitious.

During his early streaming days, CouchJockey was inspired by no-hit runs of Dark Souls 3 in the style of mavens like HappyHob and Distortion2, who popularized the concept. He completed a number of magic-focused hitless challenges over the next few months, gaining quite a few fans in the process. However, after hundreds of hours playing Dark Souls 3, a fellow player named TigerG92 heard him complaining about the lack of spell options in a certain mod on-stream, and Tiger suggested that they try making new spells themselves. That was the beginning of the Convergence.

Now Playing: Why Elden Ring Is Game Of The Year 2022

The Souls series on PC has come a long way from the infamously broken Dark Souls 1 port, which couldn’t even run higher than 30fps. A small but dedicated modding community has formed around each game in the series, and there are a handful of well-known, well-regarded mods for each entry, such as Daughters of Ash for Dark Souls 1 (as well as the upcoming Nightfall). If you’re familiar with Dark Souls 3 modding, you’ve certainly heard of the Convergence before, and that’s for a good reason: It’s a shockingly polished product, even by the high standards of From Software itself. However, these days, the Elden Ring incarnation of the mod is arguably better-known, even if it’s still in development.

CouchJockey says that making a magic-themed modification for Dark Souls 3 was a natural outgrowth of his streaming experience. “I had already dedicated about 3,000 hours to the game,” he explains. “I already had a depth of knowledge for it, as well as some strong opinions about what could be better about it.”

This archdruid is one of Dark Souls 3 Convergence’s most memorable fights.

Magic has always occupied a unique place in the Souls games–many players avoid it entirely, and it needs to be strong enough to be viable without overpowering the melee combat that many view as the durable core of the series. CouchJockey says that spell design is a “ripe design space” for Souls modders for two main reasons: The spells are relatively easy to make, and those who delight in mage builds often feel that the options in the base game don’t go far enough.

One of the Convergence’s boldest design decisions is perhaps its most basic. In order to make spellcasting more viable, the mod continuously regenerates the player’s FP. In vanilla Dark Souls 3, players have to use an Ashen Estus Flask to refill the bar instead. Though this allowed CouchJockey and his design team to make spells that cost huge amounts of mana without penalty, the Elden Ring version of this mechanic is much slower than the DS3 equivalent. “We wanted to have other sources of FP [mana] regen as an important aspect of buff design,” CouchJockey explains. “We found that having some regen at all was sufficient to prevent roadblocks.”

Convergence DS3 features a frankly overwhelming number of new spells, and many of them belong to schools of magic that are more at home in Skyrim than any Souls game. Cryomancy, aeromancy, geomancy, druidism, and dark miracles are just some of the options that you can build for, and you can choose to specialize in one or stick with a general mix. The game’s two spellcasting stats of faith and intelligence each correspond to several of these schools (sometimes both), though you ultimately have to dump a lot of resources into a staff or other spell tool to maximize your effectiveness with each school.

Though the improvements to magic are ostensibly the focus of Convergence DS3, it has a lot more to offer than that. CouchJockey notes that the mod was the first to implement a new map piece with its own unique collisions–a significant achievement, to be sure, and one achieved largely thanks to team member AronTheBaron. Convergence DS3 adds a surprising amount of new paths, enemies, and even unique boss battles to the base game. CouchJockey says that he’s particularly proud of one of those bosses, Archdruid Caimar, who uses animations from Sekiro’s Owl fight to create a new challenge for veteran players. It even has two ultra-hard versions of two existing bosses, the Abyss Watchers and Yhorm the Giant, as a capstone challenge for true masochists out there.

With all this said, however, CouchJockey notes that the decision to make a version of the mod for Elden Ring was essentially a no-brainer, with intentions dating back to the game’s announcement. However, though the team initially wanted to wait “a few years” after release for the modding scene to develop–and for From Software to release any and all potential DLCs–those plans were scrubbed once they actually played the game for themselves.

The Convergence Elden Ring still isn't done, but it's already one of the best mods for a From Software game ever.
The Convergence Elden Ring still isn’t done, but it’s already one of the best mods for a From Software game ever.

As CouchJockey puts it: “We felt very strongly that the game could benefit from our style overhaul. Especially in terms of quality-of-life features, the fact that many of the base game spell schools felt unfinished, and the world map had so much under-leveraged space. Essentially, in our view, DS3 did not really need the ‘Convergence treatment,’ but Elden Ring seemed to be crying out for it.”

Given that Elden Ring’s modding scene is still in its nascent stages only a year after launch, CouchJockey says that the game presents its own problems when compared to DS3. He cites Elden Ring’s sheer size as the main challenge–though the Convergence DS3 took 18 months to make, the ER version is still in alpha after a full year of development. He says that the team is being more choosy with porting enemy models or weapons from other games, though he acknowledges that the team uses animations from external titles because of limited selection within Elden Ring itself. Though he says that a fine balance is a key part of the appeal of the Souls titles, the team is currently more focused on adding new content than adjusting what’s there, simply because it’ll be easier to balance when all of the pieces are in place.

Still, as a whole, CouchJockey describes Convergence ER’s development as proceeding “ahead of schedule,” while also noting that the shared name between the two mods doesn’t seem to cause much confusion. According to him, the mod will add more weapons, armor, spells, bosses, quests, and even new so-called “legacy dungeons” by the time it’s finished.

It’s unclear when that might happen, but given that Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC hasn’t come out yet, you can expect it to continue past that. And even though it’s still in alpha, CouchJockey is already quite proud of Convergence ER. After the team finishes this mod, most of them plan to found a new game studio in order to continue their careers in game design. He cites the boss fight with Skarde, Crucible’s Betrayer as a particular highlight of the mod’s current state–if you haven’t played it yet, just know that this boss finally shuts Gideon up for good. If you play Souls games on PC, these are two mods that are definitely worth a look–especially if you like to sling spells with the best of them.

Woody Allen received a three-minute standing ovation at the Venice premiere of “Coup de Chance” on Monday night, which would have gone on longer had the filmmaker not started to exit. After two minutea and 30 seconds of sustained applause once the film finished, Allen began to make his way toward the door, cutting the standing ovation short. The filmmaker looked visibly moved during the reaction and at one point took out a tissue.

Allen was greeted in the theater by a standing ovation before the movie even screened as fans tried to catch video of him. The reception was the same on the red carpet, with fans cheering him on enthusiastically — however, just outside the carpet a group of protesters walked by. According to social media posts, the protesters removed their shirts and handed out sheets of paper encouraging the fest to “turn the spotlight off of rapists.”

“This year the Biennale Venice Film Festival has decided to give space to Woody Allen, Luc Besson and Roman Polanski, three directors involved in sexual violence against women, including minors,” the note added.

In an exclusive interview with Variety ahead of the film’s world premiere, Allen teased that “Coup de Chance,” his 50th feature, might be his last as he is growing tired of hustling to secure financial backing for his projects.

“I have so many ideas for films that I would be tempted to do it, if it was easy to finance,” he said. “But beyond that, I don’t know if I have the same verve to go out and spend a lot of time raising money.”

Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman called “Coup de Chance” Allen’s best movie since “Blue Jasmine” in his review out of Venice, adding, “The film has a jaunty tone of deadpan glee, abetted by its soundtrack of ’60s and ’70s jazz standards. It’s not a comedy, but as you watch it you can almost see Woody Allen standing off to side, chuckling at the human folly he’s showing you.”

Written and directed by Allen, “Coup de Chance” is a French-language thriller in the vein of “Match Point” that follows a beautiful couple living in Paris come undone by the arrival of a former flame. The cast includes Lou de Laage, Valerie Lemercier, Melvil Poupaud and Niels Schneider.

“Coup de Chance” is Allen’s first directorial effort since 2020’s “Rifkin’s Festival,” which did not have a proper theatrical release in North America, nor did his 2019 comedy “A Rainy Day in New York,” which featured starry talent like Timothee Chalamet, Selena Gomez and Elle Fanning. Theatrical distributors in the U.S. have largely avoided Allen since the #MeToo movement resurfaced Dylan Farrow’s allegations of child molestation against him.

As Variety reported before the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, “Coup de Chance” landed French distribution through Metropolitan FilmExport. There had been rumors that Allen was eyeing the Cannes Film Festival for a premiere for the movie, but Venice ended up taking the title instead. Allen previously described “Coup de Chance” as a “poisonous romantic thriller.”

“Coup de Chance” currently does not have U.S. distribution.

Congressman Adam Schiff said Sunday that Republican frontrunner Donald Trump should be “disqualified” from the 2024 presidential race due to the 14th Amendment, which mandates that someone who engages “in acts of insurrection or rebellion against the government, or you give aid and comfort to those who do, you are disqualified from running.”

“It fits Donald Trump to a T,” he said.

Schiff made the statement on an appearance on “Inside With Jen Psaki” on Sunday where he was asked about the role the 14th Amendment may have in limiting the former president’s ability to run again for reelection in 2024.

“There’s an argument circulating about whether the 14th Amendment, that prohibits anyone ‘engaging in insurrection or rebellion’ from holding public office, bars Trump from running for president,” Psaki posed before asking Schiff: “What is your thought on whether that’s a valid argument?”

“I think it is a valid argument,” Schiff said. “You know, the 14th Amendment, Section 3, is pretty clear: If you engage in acts of insurrection or rebellion against the government or you give aid and comfort to those who do, you are disqualified from running. It doesn’t require that you be convicted of insurrection, it just requires that you have engaged in these acts. It is a disqualification from holding office again, and it fits Donald Trump to a T.”

Trump, of course, is currently facing four separate indictments, one of which relates to his alleged conspiracy to defraud the United States in the lead-up to the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Looking to how this may play out, Schiff, a Democrat from California, envisions the argument being brought all the way to the Supreme Court, which currently boasts three conservative Trump appointees: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

“I think this will be tested when the Secretary of State either refuses to put him on the ballot or puts him on the ballot and is challenged by a litigant. I would imagine it will go up to the Supreme Court, and that’s the big question mark through all of this, which is: What will the Supreme Court do?” Schiff said. “There are prominent constitutional scholars as well as prominent progressive scholars who believe that he should be disqualified. But will the court take that step ultimately? Only time will tell. But I do think it is a very legitimate issue by the clear terms of the 14th Amendment, he should be disqualified from holding office.”

Ari Aster thinks his third film is his best.

The “Midsommar” and “Hereditary” writer-director mused over the legacy of mind-bending “Beau Is Afraid” in an interview with Empire magazine. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as a hyper-anxious man having a religious reckoning and mental breakdown when faced with seeing his emotionally abusive mother.

“I consider the film to be a picaresque, and I think part of that tradition is a certain irreverence towards the integrity of any sort of narrative structure,” Aster said of his approach. “The film is designed to kind of shapeshift a lot.”

He added, “I would say that it’s the film I’m proudest of. I think it’s the best filmmaking that I’ve done. I love the film, and I really hope that people continue to find it.”

Aster recommended that audiences see the film at least twice to fully experience the layers of the three-act non-linear structure.

“I do hope people return to it,” the A24 filmmaker said. “It’s definitely a film that I think benefits from going back. I don’t think you quite know what it is until you’ve gone all the way through. I imagine that the second viewing would be hopefully rich in a way that the first one can’t. It’s designed to be wrestled with.”

Aster continued, “For me, the film crystallized at the end of the play sequence, where Beau reunited with his sons. It reaches this emotional peak, at the end of the most artificial sequence. The most I feel for Beau is when he’s essentially living out this really false moment of catharsis where he’s a father, which he is not, and he’s embracing these lost children that he’d never actually had. Whenever I watched the film, it felt like the very heart of the movie: this uncanny effect of us coming closest to the character when he’s actually furthest away from his own situation, and we’re just deep inside of him and his longings.”

However, Aster is thankful to be done with the film’s press tour, saying, “I feel like it’s always kind of an unhealthy thing to sit in, the grappling with the release and the reception. So I’m happy to be on the other side of it.”

Aster is set to reunite with “Beau Is Afraid” star Phoenix for a Western, which would be his fourth feature.

Robert Klane, the screenwriter for “Weekend at Bernie’s” and “Where’s Poppa?” and the director of “Thank God It’s Friday, has died, according to several media reports confirming the news with son Jon Klane. He was 81 years old.

In addition to those films, Klane worked as a writer on a number of movies and TV shows, including “The Man With One Red Shoe,” six episodes of “M*A*S*H*” and “Tracey Takes On,” which won an Emmy.

“Weekend at Bernie’s” is Klane’s most well-known work, though in 2014 he filed a lawsuit alongside the film’s director claiming the pair had not been paid residuals owed from the movie since its 1989 release. Klane and Red Kotcheff argued that they had not been properly compensated for their work and were owed a share of the more than $30 million the movie had made.

Klane was born on Oct. 17, 1941, in Port Jefferson, New York. He attended college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated in 1963 after studying under novelist Betty Smith, who wrote “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.” Klane first gained attention as an author with the release of his 1968 novel “The Horse is Dead: A Tasteless Novel.”

The money Klane made by selling the rights to the book allowed him the space and opportunity to write his second, “Where’s Poppa?.” The book is described as the”sophomore effort of a clearly disturbed mind representing a singular moment in American literary history; one in which the legacies of such authors as Joseph Heller and JD Salinger arrive at an unimaginably lewd yet inevitable terminus.”

The sale of his book rights helped Klane move his family to Los Angeles and work on the movie and his third novel, “Fire Sale,” which was also adapted into a film that was directed by and starred Alan Arkin.

Klane is survived by his wife, J.C. Scott, his brother Larry, his three children, and five grandchildren. His daughter Tracy died in 2011.

Variety first reported the news of Klane’s death.

Steve Harwell, the founding singer of Smash Mouth, died today at his home in Boise, Idaho, of liver failure, The New York Times reports. The musician was 56 years old.

Harwell dealt with alcoholism and numerous health issues in the years preceding his death. In 2013, he was diagnosed with a heart condition (cardiomyopathy) and a neurological condition (acute Wernicke encephalopathy). He collapsed onstage during a concert a few years later, and, in 2021, he retired from performing following a difficult show in New York. “Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream,” Harwell said at the time. “To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with.”

On Instagram, Smash Mouth wrote today, “Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle. Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom.” Find the band’s full statement below.

Before launching Smash Mouth in 1994, Steve Harwell released a single with the rap group F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech) through Scotti Bros. Records. “You know, we were just really into Chuck D and that shit at the time and I just thought, ‘I want to be a rapper,’” Harwell told Stereogum of 1993’s “Big Black Boots.” As it turned out, hip-hop was not for Harwell, who recognized that he might not make it big in the genre.

“Around the time we were about to put out our single, this kid Snoop Dogg came out and changed everything,” Harwell recalled in 2017. “I was at a radio convention in Las Vegas watching MC Hammer of all people, and I just looked at my manager, ‘I’m tired of all this hip-hop shit, I want to start an alternative rock band.’ He said, ‘You’re crazy, it was hard enough getting this.’ But he followed me down the path and here we are.”

Harwell formed Smash Mouth with his manager (drummer Kevin Coleman), guitarist Greg Camp, and bassist Paul De Lisle, the latter of whom still tours with the band. Smash Mouth released their debut studio album, Fush Yu Mang, in July 1997 via Interscope. The album featured a cover of War’s “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and the group’s first big single, “Walkin’ on the Sun.”

We’ve all heard the complaints from avid fans and readers about how certain films have changed key parts of classic books. The list is too long to fit into a single article, but we can all think of examples of the outcry that happens. What we want to take a quick look at today is why it happens. Are these directors deliberately changing the story because they know better than the original author, or is there something else at play?

Stephen King’s original works have been turned into more TVs shows and blockbuster movies than virtually any other writer out there. IT, The Shinning, Mr Mercedes…the list could go on and on. Interestingly, he also wrote a Shawshank Redemption novella back in 1982, long before it was ever turned into one of the world’s most enduring popular classics on the big screen.

It won’t come as a surprise that a master storyteller like King could come up with such a memorable story, but what may surprise you is how the book differs to the film. In a lot of cases the books that inspire blockbuster movies soon get a cult following of their own and the differences are debated to the point where there really is nothing else to say. This isn’t the case here, which is why it’s a great way to highlight how books are turned into movies in a way few of us have ever thought about.

The first thing to consider is how long it takes to read a book vs watch a movie. Average length paperbacks can take 15-20 hours to read, whereas a movie is very long if it crosses the 3-hour barrier. Condensing things down without cramming too many details into the screenplay is an essential skill. Yes, thanks to the visuals you don’t need to have all the layers of description, but you still need space for plot development, dialogue and character arcs.

Let’s take a look at the novella. Red narrates the entire book, whereas in the movie there are many scenes where he doesn’t speak over the action. This makes sense because having Red narrate in a way that constantly intersperses the dialogue will be confusing when the other characters are on screen. You don’t have this additional layer of visual data in the book, which means there’s no distractions by layering everything with narration.

The next thing to consider is that while in the movie Red is played by the iconic Morgan Freeman, in the book he’s a white Irish guy with red hair. This is a classic example of the director and producer changing a largely superficial detail without disrupting the plot and rhythm. They had found an actor they thought would be perfect for the learned and streetwise Red and they adapted the story to suit him.

You might think that all of the characters have to resemble exactly what the writer described, but there’s an issue here. While a writer can create any type of physical appearance and stature they wish, producers and directors are constrained by a small number of actors who may or not be available at any given time. Tom Cruise playing Lee Child’s towering Jack Reacher character is another example. The superficial elements are put to one side in favor of acting ability, availability and in these two cases: star power.

Next up we have Warden Norton the main bad guy in the film. His changing fashion is a great way to show how life on the outside is developing while life within Shawshank is one long slog. While his infamous work program is a key part of the book, he only appears in the final third of the story. Three other wardens come and go before Norton gets the job, something which would be hard to condense into a 2-hour film. On the big screen you want a rich array of characters, but not so many that you can’t give them meaningful arcs in the space of a couple of hours.

Perhaps most notably we have the case of the despicable Byron Hadley — the toxic bully and head guard who is very much Norton’s right hand man. The scene where he hangs Andy off the roof after being asked about his tax arrangements is straight out of the book, but other than that, he barely features.

In fact, in the book Hadley takes early retirement due to heart issues long before Norton’s criminality is ever exposed. He’s a minor character in the book because of the extra time King has to weave in other characters and plot lines. Every movie, on the other hand, needs to give the main villain a brute who will take care of business without question. In the film Hadley becomes that man and it’s a shift that’s no doubt inspired by his bullying on the rooftop the day King first brought him to life.

Adaptation is the name of the game in so many areas of life because it’s what allows you to stay ahead of the curve and create a more suitable end result. You see it everywhere you look: adapting from printed lottery results in the weekend newspaper to a jackpot results site, moving to a plant-based diet to reducing methane emissions, and even something simple like Coca Cola attaching their lids to their bottles to improve recycling outcomes.

When these types of adaptions are driving more optimal results in all areas of life, is it any wonder that producers make changes to fantastic written prose so it’s better suited to the big screen?

Put it like that and you see straight away that directors aren’t chopping up great prose for the sake of it — they’re adapting the original plot and structure of the story so it works better in a new medium.

Priscilla, one of the buzziest films heading into this year’s Venice Film Festival, finally had its world premiere in competition on the Lido, receiving a rapturous seven-minute 30-second standing ovation for its director Sofia Coppola, young leads and the inspiration herself, Priscilla Presley.

Thanks to an interim agreement arranged just days prior to the festival, alongside director Coppola, stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi were able to attend the premiere alongside Priscilla Presley. The biopic details her relationship with Elvis, whom she met as a 14-year-old.

During the standing ovation, the cast and Presley were seen holding back tears, overcome with the emotion of the event and the reception.

Earlier in the day at the film’s press conference, Presley admitted that watching the movie had been hard. “It’s very difficult to watch a film about you and about your life and about your love,” she said. “But Sofia did an amazing job. She did her homework, and I really put everything out for her that I could.”

Presley also spoke candidly about her time with Elvis and had to stop several times to wipe away tears.

“Elvis would pour his heart out to me. His hopes, his fears, his loss of his mother, and I was the person who really sat there to listen and to comfort him. That was really our connection. Even though I was 14, I was older in life than in years,” she said. “And that was the attraction. People think, ‘Oh, it was sex, it was this.’ Not at all. I never had sex with him. He was very kind, very soft, very loving. But he also respected the fact I was only 14 years old. We were more in mind and thought, and that was our relationship.”

Written and directed by Coppola, Priscilla is based on the 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, written by Presley and Sandra Harmon, and was produced by Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, a Fremantle Company, Coppola for American Zoetrope, and Youree Henley. It was financed by Fremantle Group. A24 will distribute in the U.S. and Vision Distribution, a Sky Company, will distribute in Italy.

“How To With John Wilson” has mined a mix of absurd humor, poignancy, and occasional awe out of Wilson’s ability to capture arresting images of New Yorkers going about their day. Wilson routinely uses his hunger for imagery that blends both the ordinary and the ridiculous to craft a poetic portrait of New York. He uplifts and transforms images of people just standing, sitting, and (continually) waiting for the subway into expressions of human foibles and desires when paired with his voiceover attempting to understand or learn something. What is astounding, and perfectly in keeping with Wilson’s documentary style, is that the music of the show’s final moments reflects Wilson’s eye just as much as the images do.

An all-brass version of “La Vie En Rose” plays throughout the last minute or so of Episode 6, “How to Track Your Package,” with several shots of a band in a parking lot with parents watching a few feet away; it is both seemingly diegetically motivated as a performance that Wilson captured and motivated by his voiceover, the score becoming the voice of “the children of tomorrow” that will keep propelling New York City and all other human projects into our unknown future.

But the track selection arose out of Wilson’s inexhaustible hunt for imagery. Specifically, it arose out of Wilson’s quest for a video of a Pop-Tart package with three Pop-Tarts inside instead of the normal two. “I was looking for that for some reason. It never made it [into the show]. And I found someone on YouTube that had found [a three-pack of Pop-Tarts], but on the rest of their YouTube channel, they were part of a marching band and they had this amazing rendition of ‘La Vie En Rose’ that I had never heard before,” Wilson told IndieWire on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast.

The random happenstance of looking at the YouTube archive of a kid who found an extra packed sleeve of Pop-Tarts, digging deeper, and stumbling onto something that then shapes the show’s final moving moments is a quintessentially “How To With John Wilson” series of events. Wilson does take ownership of the engineering that he has to do to create the gloriously incidental structure of the HBO series in the penultimate episode of the show (and got to blow up a car in the bargain); his love for that brass version of “La Vie En Rose” also led him to another bit of engineering.

“I listened to [the piece] day after day and I was just like, ‘I need to have this in [the show]. But the quality of the audio [in the video] is not presentable.’ So we actually reached out to [the marching band] and had them perform it for us. We did it like six or seven times and that was the one that made it into the cut,” Wilson said.

Wilson knew that was the music he wanted to end the series with. But he credits his editing team on Season 3, Sascha Stanton-Craven and Cori Wapnowska, and music supervisor Megan Currier for all providing brilliant suggestions throughout the season to help viewers move through each episode’s tonal shifts. It’s often the music in combination with Wilson’s voiceover that cues the viewer to take a breath, crack a smile, or lean in as the tension of an interaction increases.

“Initially, I asked for ‘Ren and Stimpy’ music, you know? For a lot of just classical stuff, but also some ‘70s electronic stuff,” Wilson said. “[Currier] gives us a lot of songs. She’ll give us a bunch of folders that have a specific mood or something like that, based off of what the sequence calls for. The editors are also constantly throwing in tracks that just work really well.”

“How To With John Wilson”Thomas Wilson/HBO

Reflecting on the close-up look he’s gotten at New York over the course of the HBO series, Wilson felt the serendipity of capturing specific pieces of it before they vanished. “There’s footage of stuff in the first season that I never thought would disappear and it’s gone now,” Wilson said. “It makes me feel like we had this ‘Indiana Jones’ moment where we made it out just in time, where we were able to get that facade or talk to that person right before it was gone from the city forever.”

It would be too clumsy and too conceited for Wilson’s voiceover, but the filmmaker’s ability to create and/or find images that are so specific and yet seem so universal lines up with the time the final episode spends with Cyronics supporters. “How To With John Wilson” itself captures the constant churn of the city changing and Wilson’s desire to preserve what’s still there. “You take for granted that some of your favorite stuff is still around. So this feeling of loss that as a New Yorker, you kind of feel all the time — this was the most productive way I could think of to deal with that, by freezing it somewhere,” Wilson said.

  • Raven-Symone did not come out as a lesbian until she took a break from Hollywood in 2013.
  • Raven and Miranda met at a gay bar in West Hollywood in 2015.
  • The couple never publicly addressed their relationship until they tied the knot in June 2020.

Raven-Symone and Miranda Maday have been married for three years, but they were not always open to the public about the details of their relationship. The couple kept their relationship out of the spotlight for many years and did not publicly speak about it until after their 2020 nuptials.

Rave-Symoné first entered Hollywood at a very young age, when she portrayed Olivia Kendall on The Cosby Show at 3-years-old. This was only the beginning of her television career, as she rose to fame as Raven Baxter on the hit Disney show That’s So Raven, which aired from 2003 to 2007. Quickly after, she garnered further success when she landed a main role in the movie trilogy The Cheetah Girls as Galleria. For Miranda’s part, she worked as an executive assistant before she started a career as a social media manager in 2017.

In April 2021, the pair launched a YouTube channel together called 8 PM, which covered a wide range of topics including lifestyle, health, art, skincare, and more. They continued to release content until June 2022 and gained over 42,000 subscribers. Most recently, the couple came out with a podcast called The Best Podcast Ever in June 2023. They have already had a wide range of guests, including co-Cheetah Girl Adrienne Bailone, Demi Lovato, and Jojo Siwa.

“I think it’s really important to show our generation a lesbian couple that’s multiracial who can work together, tells the truth and doesn’t sugar coat things with real sugar,” Raven-Symoné told People at the time. “Obviously, we have our persona. But every day, you’re getting us. It’s what we want for our lives and the trajectory of our careers. I think it’s special to see that. I mean, I didn’t see that as a kid.” Learn more about Miranda and her relationship with Raven below!

Although the couple were private at the time they kindled their love, Raven and Miranda shared the story of how they met years later — on a Q&A for their YouTube channel 8 PM. The pair met in 2015 when the Disney alum was hosting a karaoke night at a gay bar in West Hollywood.

It was an instant connection and they knew it was meant to be. Two days after the meeting, the pair went on a first date and spent the night talking in the car for eight hours and still didn’t want to leave each other’s side. “It was one of those things where you didn’t want the person to ever leave,” Miranda told People in June 2023. “Call me psychic, call me deeply intuitive, call me crazy. I just knew she was my person. And I love being right.”

Raven and Miranda also shared some details of the beginnings of their relationship in an interview on the YouTube show Face To Face With David. After just meeting, the duo decided to live together. “Why don’t you come to move to New York and live with me? We just met,” Raven-Symoné recalled on the podcast. Miranda also shared that she “dropped” her “bills, responsibilities and job” and went to live with the That’s So Raven star. At the time, Raven was about to start hosting the daytime talk show The View.

But, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows at the start of the relationship, since Raven-Symoné requires all her dating partners to sign an NDA — in order to keep her life private. “I was really reluctant (to ask) because I knew something was different about Miranda,” The Cheetah Girls star revealed on an episode of their podcast.

In June 2020, the two podcast hosts secretly tied the knot in a small ceremony in front of actress Debbie Ryan‘s garden in Los Angeles, and the wedding was officiated by their friend Erica Summers. Raven shared the news two days later via Instagram. “I got married to a woman who understands me from trigger to joy, from breakfast to midnight snack, from stage to home,” Raven-Symoné captioned the since-deleted photo of her and Miranda with their arms around each other on their wedding day. In another deleted post, Raven-Symoné also wrote, “Thank you to all those who helped and for those who understand why it was small during this time.”

As for the wedding attire, the former host sported a black button-down shirt, while her bride rocked a white Gucci jumpsuit. “Miranda makes me feel confident and empowered in an entirely new way. We planned our ceremony together, and it was a true reflection of our love and partnership,” Raven-Symoné told People.

After years of speculation and a remarkably unsubtle teaser campaign that saw the group’s iconic logo projected onto iconic structures in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris and other major cites, the Rolling Stones have announced the forthcoming release of “Hackney Diamonds,” their first studio album since 2005.

Full details will be announced Wednesday at an event in the Hackney district of East London on Wednesday, where the group’s three principals, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ron Wood, will be interviewed live by “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon. The launch event will be hosted by and streamed exclusively worldwide via YouTube.

“Hackney may be at the heart of Hackney Diamonds, but this is a truly global moment we want to share with fans around the world via YouTube,” the group said in a statement Monday.

The group has been recording new material for many years — they “took a break” from it to record an album of blues standards released in 2016 — and at least one song has been reported to feature the two surviving members of the Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

The album will be the group’s first release since the 2021 death of Charlie Watts, a founding member who had played each of the band’s thousands of concerts except one, and nearly every recorded song, since the Rolling Stones formed in 1962. The group toured last fall with drummer Steve Jordan.

Even as its members reach their eighties, the Stones have toured regularly throughout the 21st century, with Jagger retaining nearly his full measure of vocal and physical energy despite turning 80 on July 26. After a pandemic-induced delay, the group resumed its “No Filter” North American tour in the fall of 2021, shortly after Watts’ death, and underwent a multi-date “Sixty” tour of Europe last year, observing the band’s sixtieth anniversary.

The big season finale of My Adventures With Superman just set up two staple villains for Clark Kent to go up against in Season 2.

This article contains spoilers for My Adventures With Superman Episode 10.

One would think that after defeating Anthony Ivo and saving the city, Superman could use a day off. Sadly, fate had a different plan.

Namely, that included throwing Clark Kent into a family Thanksgiving with The General—also known as Lois Lane’s father, who is trying to kidnap and kill his superhero alter ego. To make things worse, Superman is poisoned with Kryptonite, leading to his hidden Kryptonian ship initiating offensive countermeasures and seemingly starting another invasion of Earth.

After some emotional moments, Superman is able to pull through and save Earth once again—but it’s clear that this is only the beginning of a much larger story.

My Adventures With Superman Sets Up Key Villains for Season 2

After Superman saves the day and disables the invading ship in the finale, fans are shown a mysterious figure watching over the destructive aftermath.

DC

From there, the cloaked being flies over a destroyed city on a ravaged planet. There, it speaks to another unidentified figure.

My Adventures With Superman
DC

The figure (voiced by Michael Emerson) speaks to this second person, telling them that they “found a new planet.”

While Emmerson’s character warns that they are in rebellion, this second person doesn’t seem too worried, as he’s convinced that “they will kneel.”

That line, along with the symbol on his chest, confirmed him to be this show’s version of General Zod.

My Adventures With Superman
DC

While the first robot-like figure is never identified by name, the markings on him are clear: it’s Brainiac—at least, it’s some version of the villain.

My Adventures With Superman
DC

General Zod, or Dru-Zod, is one of Superman’s most famous enemies.

The warlord’s clan was a big deal on Krypton before its destruction. The Zods were focused on the military, whereas the Els (Superman’s family) were scientists.

In many versions of the big bad’s stories, Zod attempted to overthrow Krypton’s leadership council in an attempt to save the planet from its impending doom.

As for Brainiac, while his design and form have changed countless times over the decades, he is always an alien artificial intelligence who holds a unique unquenchable thirst for knowledge—something that generally leads to death on a grand scale.

What Are Brainiac and General Zod Up to?

General Zod, Brainiac
DC

While My Adventures With Superman generally avoided big staple villains in its first season, that doesn’t appear to be the plan going forward.

They aren’t just taking a small step forward either, as Brainiac and General Zod teaming up is no small thing. But what exactly do the two have planned?

It almost seems like Brainiac is a subordinate to General Zod. Perhaps audiences will watch that partnership deteriorate, leading to the artificial intelligence becoming a much more threatening version of itself.

Another important question for the duo is this: Did the duo play any role in the downfall of Krypton?

While Zod’s face wasn’t revealed, one would have to imagine there’s definitely a Kryptonian under all that armor. After all, it wouldn’t be the same iconic villain if it were anything else.

As for Brainiac, fans are left with an avalanche of questions.

Is that THE Brainiac, or simply a drone? Exactly how close to the infamous big bad will the show get? Because, as of right now, this iteration seems extremely different.

Needless to say, Clark Kent is definitely going to be thrown into the deep end of the pool when the evil duo arrives to claim Earth. But will the Man of Steel be able to do anything to stop them?

My Adventures With Superman is now streaming on Max.

A New Baldur’s Gate 3 mod adds plenty of Dungeons and Dragons races that missed the initial launch. The mod’s creator, DungeonsAndSouls, also added some player races from Final Fantasy XIV. With this mod, there certainly is no shortage of new races for players to test out.

D&D’s fifth edition has seen several expansions with Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and a few other new sourcebooks. Of course, it would be impossible to include every single race found in pre-existing and future installments in the long-running tabletop game. Still, the Fantastical Multiverse is set on bringing many popular races to BG3.

Image via Nexus Mods

Whether you’re looking to play a Sea Elf or a Minotaur, this mod lets players explore how the other half lives.

Of course, the other exciting part is that this mod also brings in our Final Fantasy friends from the world of Eorzea. The mod allows players to choose the Hyur, Elezen, Roegadyn, and Garlean empire races.

While there’s plenty to sink your teeth into here, DragonsAndSouls are also working on bringing even more races to the game with this mod. On the official page of Nexus Mods, the developer has a list of races they would like to get to down the line. No ETA has been given on any of them, but take a look yourself. We’re waiting for the Ascians to be added so we can finally roleplay as Emet-Selch.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has seen critical success unlike no other game this year. it’s been full of exciting developments, and the team has been hard at work patching in epilogues for each of the Origin Characters. The team at Larian even patched in the ability to finally let your Short King kiss taller characters in the game after some fan outcry.

What is a film treatment?

It’s a multi-page document written in prose, that tells the story that happens in your screenplay. It is a synopsis, with action, sparse dialogue, and works as a roadmap for the reader, producer, and writer.

This is your story, broken down into an easy-to-follow document, that anyone who picks it up can grasp immediately.

And get excited about.

This document must be engaging to any agent, assistant, executive, or layperson on the street. Your screenplay treatment will only shine with hard work.

Why do you need a script treatment for your film?

‘Wall-E’

Pixar

Screenwriters find treatments are beneficial when it comes to shopping the work around town.

They’re also great for hashing out ideas before entering a draft, and to see if that kernel of inspiration is worth pursuing as your next project.

Another thing I love about them?

They do a lot of the heavy lifting when you’re trying to figure out your movie or TV show’s tone.

It’s your chance to be snarky, emotional, and nail the world of your story before you even open your screenwriting software.

It’s like a dry-run. And it can be fun to do it, too.

Let’s be honest; it’s hard to pitch your idea out-loud to people. A script treatment gets all the details out on the page and entertainingly spins them into a yarn worth retelling.

If you can get the treatment down, the pitch is a lot easier.

How long should a script treatment be?

While a script can be 80-120 pages, your treatment’s length will vary.

When I write mine, I usually try to keep them around 10-12 pages. I include act breaks, opener, and closing scene.

But some people do a real quick version all on one page.

If I’m making one for a TV show, it might skew longer. But you don’t want to confuse a script treatment with a show bible, or even a pitch deck. This treatment should cover the pilot and probably will become a section in the bible.

Lots of people don’t add dialogue to their treatments, but sometimes I’ll add one or two lines to evoke emotions or even some jokes.

You certainly don’t want to go overboard on the dialogue here. The dialogue will likely change, and you don’t want someone to bump on the idea because the lines you include don’t radiate off the page.

Still, there are no definitive rules about how you do this, so make rules that work for you.

This is your chance to convey your story the best way possible. Maybe that means outlining characters, spending time on paragraphs describing the world, or even just giving a state of the union on why you NEED to write this movie.

Let this synopsis speak for you and spark more ideas.

Film Treatment Template

How-to-write-a-film-treatment

This is the outline I use when I start this process. It’s not perfect, but it prompts me and starts getting me going.

Use it as a leaping off point and customize it for your needs.

So without further ado, check out our film treatment template.

Put your voice into this film treatment sample!

Logline: Sum up the story in one sentence.

Characters: Give us only the main characters, and make us fall in love with them.

Opening Scene: Where are we? What’s happening? How does it convey the tone?

Act One: Who’s the movie/tv show? What’s the world?

Act Two: What’s the narrative thrust? What brings these characters together and then breaks them apart?

Act Three: If everything is broken, how do these characters put it back together in the end?

Final Scene: The whole movie/show has been leading up to this moment, what happens in the end, and where do we leave everyone? Is there room for a sequel?

I take all these headings and expand upon them.

You want the experience of reading this to be similar to that of watching the movie. It should have all the eventual favorite scenes that will be a blast to write.

It should take you through all the big emotions.

Let’s look at two successful writers and see what they have to offer on the subject,

Why Write a Treatment?

Writing Fight Scenes

‘John Wick’

Lionsgate

I know I got you excited in the opening about development executives loving treatments, but there are a few things you have to come to terms with… the first being that treatments don’t usually sell.

Once in a while, someone will option an idea based on the treatment.

But that rarely happens. Which leads us to an important question…

Why write these in the first place?

I find them to be the first place where I can see if a story can sustain 90 minutes, or if a TV show has what it takes for me to write the pilot.

Treatments are where I explore ideas in greater depth. It’s where I feel free to make mistakes, to find out what happens in Act II, and to nail my opening and closing scenes.

After I’m satisfied with my pass, I usually give them to my manager so he can get a sense of my latest project.

After I get my manager’s feedback, I either start writing, or I share with some executives who might have been interested in the idea.

As you know, the best reason to write a script after the treatment process is that someone is paying you to do it!

Treatments rarely get you paid, but it’s good to try!

Also, as we said it’s a great place to explore your idea and get people excited.

Film script treatment samples and examples

Even the greats write treatments for their projects. So I figured it would help to include some examples by the pros.

You’ll quickly see that these come in all shapes and sizes. One of the ones I love checking out is from the unmade James Cameron’s Spiderman.

Check out how he evokes the tone and story while also keeping it playful. You’ll also see that he loves to use dialogue too.

Screenshot_2019-07-23_17Credit: James Cameron

Turns out, this James Cameron guy is a pretty good writer, especially in this film treatment sample.

But let’s take a look at a more traditional example from the screenwriter, John August. This is his treatment for a TV show called “The Circle.”

This is opening page:

Screenshot_2019-07-23_17Credit: John August

Right off the bat, you can see that August’s approach is entirely different from Cameron. He’s much more concerned about building out the logic of the world and how the show will function.

Again, neither example right or wrong; they are just two different approaches given the subject matter.

Remember, never write a treatment for free

Free work is the bane of all writer’s existence. If you don’t know how to turn down the offer or suggestion that you do free work the WGA has you covered check out this video:

That said, the treatment process is still an excellent tool for your writing. There are also plenty of places that will compensate you fairly for that work.

Wrapping up script treatments

A treatment is a great way to organize your thoughts about a project. While they may not be the most commercially viable things, they’re great ways to get on a development executive’s good sides and to see if your idea is worthwhile in the marketplace. They can also help you with agents and managers (check out our complete guide on representation here).

This is also your first line of defense against writer’s block, and it’s a “wonder tool” to get your intentions on the page. Hopefully, the movie treatment helps you.

If you have other sections you use in your treatments, or have specific treatments you love, let us know in the comments!

Matt Damon was ready to bury the hatchet over his long-standing fake feud with Jimmy Kimmel to support the comedian’s late night talk show staff salaries.

According to Kimmel, Damon and Ben Affleck offered to pay the salaries of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” staff writers amid the ongoing WGA strike.

“Ben Affleck and the despicable Matt Damon contacted me and offered to pay our staff for two weeks,” Kimmel said during the recent episode of his “Strike Force Five” podcast with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver. “A week each, they wanted to pay out of their own pockets our staff.”

Fallon responded that Damon and Affleck are “good people” for offering. Kimmel, however, turned it down, saying that it wasn’t the actors’ responsibility to do so.

The “Strike Force Five” podcast recently launched with proceeds from the Spotify show going to the employees of late night shows “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.”

Kimmel added, “Are you guys getting stir-crazy? Are you ready to go back to work? Because as you know, I was very intent on retiring right around the time where the strike started, and now I realize, like, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s kinda nice to work.’ You know, when you are working, you think about not working.”

Kimmel previously kept his staffers on payroll for two weeks during the start of the WGA strike. “Strike Force Five” focuses on the respective comedians’ perspectives on the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes; the series will run for at least 12 episodes, with each host taking turns moderating the panel.

“Oppenheimer” actor Damon previously spoke out about the SAG strike, telling Variety that the strike is “really about working actors” and not celebrity faces of Hollywood.

“It’s $26,000 to qualify for health coverage and a lot of people are on the margins and residual payments are getting them across that threshold,” Damon said. “This isn’t an academic exercise. This is real life and death stuff. Hopefully we get to a resolution quickly. No one wants a work stoppage, but we’ve got to get a fair deal.”

Damon told Deadline on the red carpet that the strike would be “tough” for 160,000 actors in the SAG union. “Nobody wants a work stoppage but if our leadership is saying that the deal isn’t fair, then we’ve got to hold strong,” the Oscar winner said earlier this year. “It’s the difference between having healthcare and not for a lot of actors, and we’ve got to do what’s right by them.”

What if we told you the way you comb hair is wrong? While it might sound like a gig that you have had down perfectly, you might be doing it wrong all your life. Such was the case for me, which I discover in a convrrsation with Natasha Nasta, style director at Jean-Claude Biguine Salons. While your reflex action might be to run a comb from your scalp till the end, this technique could be secretly causing more hair loss and breakage than you realize.

“When combing, the goal is to avoid putting excessive pressure on the scalp,” Nasta explains. “I almost always see people starting to comb from the scalp, a practice that can exert undue pressure on knotted hair. When you begin combing from the mid-lengths to the ends and then move towards the scalp, this technique minimizes hair damage and wear and tear.”

From your choice of comb to the manner in which you approach detangling, there are several mistakes that could be robbing your hair of its strength and vitality while you comb hair. Ahead, Nasta shares the do’s and don’ts to keep in mind while you comb hair to ensure it stays as healthy as can be.

Harsh combing

Combing your hair harshly can lead to breakage and hair loss. For best results, it is advisable to apply a serum, hair oil, or leave-in conditioner before combing to reduce breakage and make the process smoother.

Detangle smartly

Instead of trying to hack your way through harsh knots with maximum pressure, it helps to reach for a detangling serum or cream to be applied on the mid-lengths and ends, focusing on the knots. Then, use a wide-toothed comb to gently remove the knots while avoiding excessive force to prevent breakage and hair loss.

Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross Wide-Tooth Comb

Comb wet hair with care

Since wet hair is more fragile, it is advisable to avoid applying more tensile pressure on the sensitive strands. Instead, towel dry your hair and wait until it is 40% to 60% dry before running a wide-toothed comb through the length.

Be careful with back-combing

Back-combing frequently can cause breakage near the roots and mid-lengths of the hair. If a certain hairstyle necessitates back-combing, apply oil on the scalp and hair at night and then wash carefully the next day. Leaving the oil overnight helps soften and naturally detangle the hair.

For much of Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s subdued but stirring repositioning of the Elvis myth from the perspective of the woman who spent 14 years as his girlfriend and wife, there’s a sense of an emotionally immature man regularly taking a doll out of its box to play romance or dress-up or even kink one night when they drop acid. But he remains determined always to return her to her original packaging, in this case that of an unworldly 9th grade schoolgirl.

The beauty of this probing study of a lonely private world in the glare of the public eye is that while it appears on the surface to show a protagonist without agency, manipulated and compartmentalized since her teens, the Priscilla Presley portrayed here with moving emotional transparency by Cailee Spaeny is a self-possessed woman always attuned to her needs, who emerges from intoxication to begin a long, painful but ultimately decisive process of reassessment.

The Bottom Line

An impeccable union of director and subject.

Venue: Venice Film Festival (Competition)
Release date: Friday, Oct. 27
Cast: Cailee Spaeny, Jacob Elordi, Ari Cohen, Dagmara Dominczyk, Tim Post, Olivia Barrett, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, Daniel Beirne, Dan Abramovici, R Austin Ball, Stephanie Moore,
Director-screenwriter: Sofia Coppola, based on the memoir Elvis and Me, by Priscilla Beaulieu Presley with Sandra Harmon

Rated R,

Few filmmakers are as thematically cohesive or as perceptive in their intimate attention to the inner lives and complex identities of young women as Coppola, making it tough to think of a director better equipped to guide us through this story, familiar in its contours but revelatory in this fresh point of view.

The primary source was Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me, written with Sandra Harmon, but there are few if any suggestions of the usual constraints of an officially sanctioned version. (The subject also is credited as an executive producer.)

Coppola has been respectful, stepping delicately around the potentially sensitive subject of the couple’s age difference — they met and began a protracted courtship when Priscilla was 14 and Elvis 24 — but the director appears to have been free to mold the material to her own thematic interests and stylistic signatures.

The closest title in Coppola’s filmography to Priscilla might seem to be her previous foray into biographical drama, Marie Antoinette. But although there are a few small elements in common — a boldly anachronistic music choice here and there; a fascination with the decorative trappings of femininity — the new movie feels closer to the director’s 1999 feature debut, The Virgin Suicides.

The dreamlike veil that hung over that film is echoed in the feeling here of experience pulled from memory, with its deep pools of tenderness, sorrow and regret, and there are similarities in the direct access to the burgeoning desires, the swoony reveries and the rebellious drives of teenage womanhood.

The title sequence is pure Sofia Coppola, with every detail of Priscilla’s costuming to play the envied role of girlfriend to Elvis (Jacob Elordi) captured in loving detail by Philippe Le Sourd’s camera to the strains of The Ronettes’ “Baby I Love You” — bare feet with red painted toenails on pink shag carpet; industrial strength eyeliner being plastered on; the careful application of spidery false eyelashes; a gentle misting of Aqua Net. The director has always understood the evocative power of images and sounds to put us in a very specific world.

The film captures the giddy sensation of what it was like to go from being a bored Army brat, sipping coke at the diner counter of a U.S. Air Base in 1959 West Germany, to become the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s chosen one, ushered into the halls of Graceland. Even more so, the master bedroom, a shock of gaudy bad-taste bordello style.

Spaeny has no trouble passing for a teenager in those early scenes while Elvis was serving in Germany. Priscilla seems to be pinching herself as she sits demurely on a sofa watching him entertain his party guests with “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On” at the piano. She floats down the corridors at school and daydreams through class. While her parents (Dagmara Dominczyk and Ari Cohen) try to halt the romance before it gets started, Priscilla’s willfulness wears them down, as does Elvis’ old-fashioned Southern courtesy when they insist he come pick her up himself for dates.

Some audiences no doubt will bristle at a 14-year-old girl in a sexually adjacent situation. But Coppola handles that aspect nonjudgmentally, instead focusing on how Elvis uses his sadness over his recently deceased mother and his longing for home to convince Priscilla that they’re kindred spirits. Their first kiss is a rhapsodic thrill set to “Crimson and Clover,” but actual sex doesn’t come into it until much later, even after Priscilla starts trying to instigate it.

More than other portraits of Elvis, this one paints him as sexually dysfunctional, with a Madonna complex that makes him keep putting on the brakes when things risk “getting out of hand,” insisting that he’ll decide when it’s the right time.

Even while Priscilla’s still in school, he’s giving her uppers to get through her classes and downers to get to sleep. When he takes her to Vegas, she gets her first taste of how controlling he can be, shooting down her wardrobe choices in favor of dresses he chooses and telling her to dye her hair black and use more eye makeup. During a visit back to Germany, her folks are startled to greet their 17-year-old daughter at the airport with a disheveled bouffant and smudged mascara. By that point, they know they’ve lost her.

Around the same time, Priscilla starts realizing how much time she’ll spend alone reading fan magazine accounts of film-shoot romances that Elvis denies, while her behavior is policed by his father Vernon (Tim Post). The latter’s partner Dee (Stephanie Moore) tells her sharply that she needs to stop making a public display of herself when she’s sitting on the lawn playing with the poodle Elvis gave her, in view of fans behind the Graceland gates.

Long before the prying lenses of paparazzi and social media made such circumspection standard practice for celebrities, Priscilla is made to feel uncomfortable in the bubble. Spaeny stealthily dials up the melancholy of her increasing imprisonment, even as Priscilla remains caught up in the fairy tale of being American pop royalty living a life of romantic bliss.

Coppola suggests that she was always treated as an outsider and that Elvis was an overgrown boy who often preferred to goof off with his buddies than spend time with her. When she starts displaying more backbone and telling him that she needs to feel desired, he seems too stunned by a woman speaking up for herself in that way to take her seriously. Instead, he infantilizes his “little one,” telling her, “Be a good girl.”

Coming just over a year after Austin Butler put a memorable stamp on the role in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Elordi finds his own way into the character, pouring seductive charm and undeniable magnetism into the sad eyes and sleepy speech patterns. But he never shies away from the more off-putting traits — the fits of pique, the petulance, the evasiveness and dishonesty.

He consistently blocks her set visits when he’s in production on a movie or sends her home early on the rare occasions she does get to join him. Her confinement at Graceland chafes more and more, with Vernon barking at her like she’s just another member of the entourage or staff. When they finally do get married, things improve only briefly, and the birth of their daughter, Lisa Marie, makes him a proud father, but he refuses to touch Priscilla for months afterwards: “I just don’t want to hurt you, baby.”

There are amusing moments suggesting the extent to which Priscilla is playing a part, either by requirement or choice, like her applying eyelashes and teasing up her hair as she’s going into labor. But theirs is a marriage that’s never on equal terms, and Spaeny’s performance becomes increasingly moving once Priscilla’s rose-colored glasses are permanently off and her isolation is compounded.

At a time when most such epiphanies in movies come with a Big Important Self-Worth Speech like the one satirized in Barbie, Coppola deserves credit for making Priscilla’s awakening and steadily building resolve a subtle process. Some may find this underpowered and want more fireworks from the movie. But Coppola has always been a filmmaker who coaxes out feelings rather than blasts them with emphatic declarations, and the nuanced restraint of her writing and direction here are very much points in Priscilla’s favor.

The film’s poignancy is that of a young woman overwhelmed — some might say bamboozled — into a life that is never quite real, stepping back and taking control by walking away, even though she still loves her messed-up husband.

The movie’s textures, both visually and in terms of mood, are sumptuous. Le Sourd’s clear-eyed yet somehow simultaneously hazy camerawork savors the soft pastels and gold accents of Tamara Deverell’s richly detailed period production design and Stacey Battet’s stylish costumes. The latter cover the late ‘50s through to the early ‘70s, often flirting with kitsch but never to a distracting degree. Even some of Elvis’ more iconic outfits, like the black leather suit or white bellbottom jumpsuit with the half cape, seem reinterpreted.

Music by French synth-pop band Phoenix fits with Coppola’s firm command of mood in ways that recall the Air soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides, further enhanced by a multitude of sharp song choices. The use of Dolly Parton’s original “I Will Always Love You” as Priscilla makes her exit is beautiful.

The minimal screen time given to Priscilla in Lurhmann’s Elvis was not unusual by the standards of previous biographical treatments. Coppola flips the balance here to an extent that risks rubbing hardcore Elvis fans the wrong way, putting the performer in a less-than-flattering though never unfair light. But it elegantly upgrades a key player in the Elvis legend from the sidelines, and anyone attuned to Coppola’s distinctive wavelengths will find it a pleasurably emotional experience.

Rema and Burna Boy each received three awards at the 2023 Headies Awards. The show, which celebrates Pan-African and Afrobeats talent, was held on Sunday (Sept. 3) at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta.

Rema won best male artist, digital artiste of the year and African artiste of the year. In addition, Selena Gomez, who teamed with Rema on the global hit “Calm Down,” won international artiste of the year, while Director K, who directed the music video for the “Calm Down” remix, won best music video.

Burna Boy took Afrobeats single of the year and song of the year, both for “Last Last” as well as best R&B single for “For My Hand,” featuring Ed Sheeran.

Three artists won two awards each — Odumodublvck, Asake, Victony & Tempoe.

The eligibility period for the awards was January 2022 to March 2023.

Actor and host Terrence J. Nigerian and actress Osas Ighodaro hosted the show, which was streamed live on YouTube (U.S.) and HipTV (Africa) Network.

Bayanni, Khaid, Guchi, Bloody Civilian, Odumodublvck and Eltee Skhillz competed for rookie of the year. The winner, Odumodublvck, will receive not only glory, but also also a solar-powered, two-bedroom, fully furnished house.

Sean “Love” Combs was previously announced as the recipient of the international artiste recognition award. He was not present at the show, but organizers say his plaque will be delivered.

The Headies Awards, originally called the Hip Hop World Awards, were established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.

This marked the show’s second year at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. It was held in Lagos or Nigeria every year from 2006 to 2021 (except 2017 and 2020, when there was no ceremony).

In the past year, three major, all-genre music awards shows have introduced Afrobeats or African music categories. The American Music Awards were the first major music awards show to add such a category. They added favorite Afrobeats artist at the show that aired Nov. 20, 2022. Wizkid was the inaugural winner, beating Burna Boy, CKay, Fireboy DML and Tems.

The MTV Video Music Awards added a new category this year — best Afrobeats. The front-runner is Rema & Gomez’s “Calm Down,” which is nominated in two other categories, best song and best collaboration.

The Grammys added a similar category, best African music performance, this year (for the awards that will be presented on Feb. 4, 2024). Grammy nominations will be announced on Nov. 10.

Imagine being able to be the Governor of the state of California twice. For Jerry Brown, that’s exactly what happened.

First as a 36-year-old. And then at 72. A natural disrupter, Jerry Brown kickstarted the national debate about climate change and spiraling inequality back in the 1970s.

Jerry Brown with a young Marina Zenovich.

As the daughter of a politician — State Assemblyman and Senator and later Justice George N. Zenovich – I spent many summers in the Capitol building in Sacramento, watching politics unfold all around me. I’ve always wanted to make a film about Jerry Brown. I know him both as a political figure and as a layered, complex human. I want people to hear Jerry’s hard-won truths about politics and public life – and about where he thinks America is heading.

He’s lived through two very different political eras. He’s done deals in smoke-filled rooms and lived to see the age of 24/7 social media. Over the course of his career politics, culture and societal expectations have evolved far beyond what anyone could have imagined in 1975. After a lifetime mixed with successes and failures, reaching across the aisle and sometimes failing to find common ground, Governor Brown can offer a wisdom and a way forward in this tense political climate.

What lessons has Jerry learned in his 50 years in politics? Are there some character traits he just can’t change? Does he wish things could have unfolded differently? How far is he in competition with himself and how far with his father Pat Brown, who governed California during the 1960s?

My goal is to let audiences be inspired by the life and mind of Jerry Brown, a man ahead of his time and a leader for our times.

Marina Zenovich is the director of American Masters – Jerry Brown: The Disrupter.

A British policewoman who died following a reported accidental fall in Corfu may have unwittingly drunk alcohol laced with methanol, Greek cops fear.

The 22-year-old victim, who has not yet been named but worked for Surrey Police, was found with severe head injuries on a side street in Kavos in the early hours of Friday.

She had arrived on the island just hours before the fatal fall that saw her plunge from a height of several metres, reports the Sun.

The Briton had decided to stay out while her colleague went back to their hotel on Friday night. Greek authorities believe the fatal injuries she sustained outside a bar are compatible with an ‘accidental fall’.

But authorities on the Greek island are now investigating whether the victim had unwittingly drunk alcohol that had been laced with methanol, which is much more toxic than the ethanol found in regular alcoholic drinks.

A British policewoman has died following a reported accidental fall just hours after she arrived on the Greek island of Corfu on holiday (file image of Corfu Old Town)

Leading coroner Ioannis Aivatidis, who detected alcohol on the Briton’s breath, told the Sun: ‘There are questions as to what kind of alcohol she consumed. Had it been illicitly tampered with?

‘Was she so intoxicated because [illegal] methanol was in the alcoholic drinks she had consumed? The answer lies in the toxicology tests that will be carried out.’

In the hours after the police officer was found dead, authorities in Corfu announced that 28 bars would be shut down after they were found to be serving adulterated alcoholic drinks to customers.

Sources said that the closures were ‘more than coincidental’ given that they occurred following raids that were conducted shortly after the Briton was found dead.

Aivatidis told the Mirror there was no evidence the British police officer had been attack. Instead, he said that a postmortem examination had revealed she had fallen from a height of several metres.

Aivatidis told the Sun: ‘Findings included fractures to her thorax, stomach and a small rupture of the spleen. But it was a traumatic head injury that killed her.’

The coroner said the findings suggest there was no criminal involvement, which echoes the view of Greek police.

He said it was unclear whether the victim had been with her friends at the time of her accidental fall.

Aivatidis said: ‘I believe she may have confused the building she was staying in and may have fallen attempting to enter the one she was found outside of in an unorthodox manner.

‘What remains unclear and is now part of the [police probe] is whether she was abandoned by friends after the fall.’

Aivatidis said he would be carrying out further examinations of the 22-year-old’s body including toxicology tests today.

The victim was allegedly left bleeding on the street – possibly for hours – before she was found, according to Greek media.

The woman’s friends, who had travelled to Corfu on holiday with the victim, had told Corfu police that her phone was missing at some point during Friday night, suggesting that it might have been stolen.

But her mobile was found ‘nearby’, making the accidental manner of her death ‘now much more possible’, Aivatidis said. ‘But the autopsy will be definitive. It will rule out other possible scenarios.’

The victim’s stepfather, who is also a police officer, is expected to arrive on the island to repatriate the policewoman’s body back to the UK this week.

Meanwhile, Surrey Police said in a statement on Saturday: ‘Yesterday we were sadly made aware of the sudden death of a serving office whilst they were on holiday in Corfu, Greece.

‘We are working to support both their family and their colleagues here during this extremely difficult time.

‘An investigation into the circumstances of the death is being led by the Greek authorities and we await further updates from them as they conduct their enquiries.’

The Surrey Police Federation echoed these sentiments and said the police officer’s death was ‘devastating’.

It added: ‘The thoughts of all at Surrey Police Federation are with the officer’s family, friends and close colleagues at this time. Both the Federation and the force are supporting them.’

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office told MailOnline: ‘We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities’.

When it comes to saving money, warehouse

A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced to death the brother of an exiled dissident, convicting him of disloyalty to the kingdom’s rulers in a case built around anonymous social media accounts where he shared criticism of the government.

The defendant, Mohammed bin Nasser al-Ghamdi, a 54-year-old retired teacher, had almost no public profile before he was arrested last year and accused of treason. One of the main social media accounts cited in his court case, on the platform X — formerly known as Twitter — has eight followers.

The sentence, which was handed down in July, was also based on a confession attributed to Mr. al-Ghamdi after his arrest, in which he said he viewed the king and crown prince as “tyrants” and “agents of the West” who were fighting against Islam, according to court documents reviewed by The New York Times.

One possible explanation for his prosecution was offered by his elder brother, Saeed bin Nasser al-Ghamdi, a conservative Muslim cleric and vocal dissident who lives in exile in Britain. He said the authorities seemed to be using his younger brother to punish him.

“The posts that my brother wrote, no one knew about, and they didn’t spread — no one saw them even,” Saeed al-Ghamdi told The Times on Friday. “It appears to me they wanted to spite or harm or try to disturb me with this case.”

The case is part of a crackdown on dissent that has deepened under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 38, the kingdom’s de facto ruler.

Over the past eight years, the prince has rendered the once-ultraconservative country nearly unrecognizable, overseeing a plan to diversify its oil-dependent economy and ending a slew of religious and social restrictions that many Saudis found suffocating. At the same time, the modest space for political discourse has contracted.

Since 2017, the Saudi authorities have arrested hundreds of critics across the political spectrum, including religious clerics, Snapchat influencers, billionaires and several of the prince’s own cousins. The 2018 killing of Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist, by Saudi agents in Istanbul, which drew international outrage, was the most brazen example of the push. A former Saudi government insider, Mr. Khashoggi had fled the country and become an outspoken critic.

In recent years, harsher punishments than ever are being meted out to citizens who criticize their government, even as the accused have become less prominent.

After being detained, the younger Mr. al-Ghamdi confessed to holding religious and political beliefs that prosecutors portrayed as grave violations of the kingdom’s broadly worded counterterrorism law, according to the court documents. In the confession attributed to him after his arrest, he acknowledged that he was behind the anonymous social media accounts in question.

His lawyer denied the charges and said that his client “loved and was loyal to this nation,” according to the court documents. The lawyer argued that his client had neurological and psychiatric conditions that should void any statements attributed to him.

Despite that, a panel of judges sentenced Mr. al-Ghamdi to death, according to a copy of the ruling. The verdict is open to appeal.

The Saudi government’s Center for International Communication, which handles inquiries from the international news media, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But Saudi officials have argued that an iron fist is necessary to maintain control as Prince Mohammed oversees vast changes, like dismantling rules that yoked women to male guardians. In a 2018 interview, Prince Mohammed called the arrests a “small price” to “get rid of extremism and terrorism without civil war.”

Many of the religious figures imprisoned by the Saudi authorities hold similar views to the elder Mr. al-Ghamdi, who has criticized corruption and political repression while speaking out against elements of the social changes, including efforts to rewrite the Islamic studies curriculum in schools to remove content that the government designated as extremist.

Recently, he lambasted a performance in Riyadh by Iggy Azalea, the Australian musical artist, in which she accidentally split open her bodysuit while rapping the lyrics “Preaching about prophets/ it ain’t no one man can stop us/bow down to a goddess.”

“The perversion has reached extremes that are not possible to imagine,” the elder Mr. al-Ghamdi wrote on X.

Plenty of Saudis have celebrated the marginalization of such views under Prince Mohammed — arguing that ultraconservatives dominated the country for too long and smothered their personal freedoms. At the same time, many Saudis express concern about the speed of social changes and discomfort with what they view as the erosion of their country’s Islamic identity.

The prosecution’s case against the younger Mr. al-Ghamdi appeared to be built around anonymous accounts that he maintained on X and YouTube and his following and sharing posts from prominent Saudi dissidents.

In a handful of original posts, he criticized the Saudi royal family and other Arab leaders, saying that they were all “Zionists on the inside.” In a confession attributed to him by the prosecutors, he also indicated support for the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that the kingdom has designated as a terrorist organization, and said that the king and crown prince were “loyal to the infidels and agents of the Jews.”

The judges convicted him of charges including disloyalty to the kingdom’s rulers, “challenging the piety and justice of the king and crown prince” and “supporting terrorist ideology.”

Saudi officials sometimes argue that when they imprison religious conservatives, they are simply fighting the extremism that Western critics have long accused the kingdom of spreading.

“When they speak, you tell us they’re preaching hate,” Adel al-Jubeir, a senior government minister, said in an unusually candid lecture in 2018. “When we put them in jail, you tell us, ‘Why did you stop them from preaching? You took away their freedom of speech.’ It’s a ‘damned if we do, damned if we don’t’ situation.”

Rights groups say that the kingdom’s counterterrorism and anti-cybercrime laws are so broadly worded that they are wielded to silence many forms of peaceful dissent. Saudis imprisoned in recent years include leftist intellectuals, feminist activists and others who simply criticized government policies. Under Prince Mohammed, the rate of executions has also sharply increased, two rights groups wrote in a report this year.

The elder Mr. al-Ghamdi said he believed the authorities were trying to punish him through his brother’s case.

Under Prince Mohammed, the Saudi opposition in exile — once mainly Islamist in orientation — has grown increasingly diverse, vocal and well organized. The state has struggled to silence dissent abroad, sometimes turning to new tools.

Many exiles say that their family members back home are barred from traveling abroad. Others, like the elder Mr. al-Ghamdi, say they have faced pressure to return to the kingdom, where they fear they would face imminent arrest. He urged “all free people in the world” to try to save his brother and other prisoners in Saudi Arabia.

“My brother is unknown. He’s not famous. He used anonymous accounts to write posts, and his followers could have been counted on two hands,” he said. “But they arrested him and put him in solitary confinement for a period of almost four months.”

Donald Trump’s election interference trial in Georgia will appear live on TV and the court’s YouTube channel. Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee made the ruling on Thursday, which also says members of the press can use cellphones and computers inside the courtroom as long as they’re not recording, local news outlet WSB-TV reports.

“We have been livestreaming all of our major proceedings on a Fulton County-provided YouTube channel,” Judge McAfee said during the hearing, according to WSB-TV. “And our plan was to do that with this case as well. So there’s going to be a YouTube feed the entire time.”

However, there’s still a chance that Trump’s trial won’t occur from the Fulton County courtroom. Some of Trump’s co-defendants, including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, want to move their cases to federal court. If Trump takes a similar path and manages to move his trial to federal court, McAfee’s ruling won’t apply, as federal courts typically don’t allow cameras in the courtroom.

On Thursday, Trump pleaded not guilty to charges related to his alleged attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. He faces 13 felony counts in the state, including racketeering, making false statements, and conspiring to file false documents. Trump waived his right to appear at an arraignment that was set for September 6th.

The VMAs have always been a hotbed of controversy amidst celebrating music, and the 2015 edition was no exception. In the past, there have been iconic moments like Britney Spears, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera sharing a kiss, Lady Gaga turning heads with her meat dress, and the unforgettable 2009 clash between Kanye West and Taylor Swift. But 2015 was a year to remember, as it brought us a showdown of epic proportions: Nicki Minaj versus Miley Cyrus.

In 2015, when Minaj and Taylor Swift patched up their feud, things took a sour turn with Miley Cyrus. The rapper had previously addressed her issues with Cyrus, setting the record straight about their disagreements.

Why did Nicki Minaj call out Miley Cyrus?

The 2015 VMAs delivered an abundance of jaw-dropping moments, from Justin Bieber’s emotional return to Ye’s surprising presidential declaration. However, it was the onstage clash between Minaj and Cyrus that truly stole the spotlight. What unfolded when Minaj decided to call out Cyrus during her acceptance speech for ‘Anaconda’ was nothing short of an intense showdown. When pressed for an explanation, she expressed her disappointment over what she saw as a snub of  ‘Anaconda’ at the VMAs.

During an interview with the New York Times, Nicki Minaj passionately exclaimed, “You don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important?” As the host of the event, the feud between the ‘Flowers’ singer and Minaj became more public. Minaj did not mince words, going beyond the ‘Anaconda’ snub to express her offense at Cyrus altering her skin tone in place of Minaj’s face on the ‘Anaconda’ cover art. She saw this as a slight against Black women.

The feud that unfolded was quite the spectacle and eventually, roped in the ‘Lover’ singer, Swift, as well.

The whole VMA controversy- Minaj, Cyrus and Swift

Cyrus playfully inserted herself into Minaj’s ‘Anaconda’ cover art, photoshopping her face onto Minaj’s body and even adjusting the skin tone for a more “natural” look. Minaj responded with curiosity, wondering why Cyrus chose the image as her Twitter avatar. Cyrus did not stop there, creating another meme with herself as Hannah Montana in the ‘Anaconda’ context, but that time, Minaj’s response was less friendly.

The feud initially ignited when Minaj’s ‘Anaconda’ video wasn’t nominated for Video of the Year at the 2015 VMAs. She raised important questions about racial representation and body positivity in award nominations. This led to a Twitter exchange with Taylor Swift. Cyrus, as the VMAs host that year, chimed in, calling Minaj “not too kind“. Further, she even suggested jealousy as the cause of her dissatisfaction with the nominations. Ultimately, Swift won several awards, including Video of the Year for ‘Bad Blood.’

The VMAs have always been a hotbed

Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of the rock band Smash Mouth, which was best known for its ubiquitous 1999 hit “All Star,” died on Monday. He was 56.

His death, at his home in Boise, Idaho, was confirmed by the band’s manager, Robert Hayes, who said the cause was liver failure.

Smash Mouth was founded in 1994 in San Jose, Calif., and was made up of Harwell, the lead singer, Kevin Coleman on the drums, Greg Camp on the guitar, and Paul De Lisle on the bass. The band first broke out with their 1997 song “Walkin’ on the Sun,” which appeared on their debut album, “Fush Yu Mang.”

“‘Walkin’ on the Sun’ changed music. It changed the way people listen to music,” Harwell told Rolling Stone in 2019. “It was so different and it was so unusual, and it was so special. It just had that sound that we created. Ask anybody that’s tried to copy us, you can’t. You just can’t.”

The band enjoyed even greater success with the release of their next album, “Astro Lounge,” in 1999, and its chart-topping hit “All Star.” The song, which was nominated for a Grammy Award, also appeared in numerous films, and enjoyed newfound popularity two years later when it was featured in the opening credits of “Shrek,” the Academy Award-winning animated film about an ogre voiced by Mike Myers.

“We had no clue how big ‘Shrek’ was going to be,” Harwell said in the 2019 interview with Rolling Stone. (“All Star” also appeared on the soundtrack for the 1999 film “Mystery Men,” whose characters feature in the song’s music video.)

Since then, “All Star” has lived on, becoming a rich source for online parodies. Nearly 25 years later, the sound of Harwell’s voice is still linked to the song’s recognizable opening lines: “Somebody once told me / The world is gonna roll me / I ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed.”

“All Star” has close to a billion streams on Spotify. “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “I’m a Believer,” a cover of the Monkees song that also appeared on the “Shrek” soundtrack, have also garnered hundreds of millions of streams.

Harwell left the band in 2021 and retired from performing altogether after a live show in upstate New York during which he is seen slurring his words and using profanity. Earlier that year, Harwell had taken a break from live performing because of heart problems, according to several news media reports at the time.

Smash Mouth, which has had a rotating lineup over the years, has not released a new studio album in about a decade, but it has released new singles, including “Underground Sun” this year, with a different lead singer.

The band still performs — including a show scheduled for Saturday in Illinois — but it will forever be associated with “All Star,” something that Harwell was aware of.

“Nobody else could have sang that song.” Harwell told Rolling Stone in 2019. “It would have never been what it is now. I could’ve pitched that song to a million bands and they would have tried to do it, and it would’ve never been what it is.”

Here are three upcoming MCU movies that could bring back Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark aka Iron Man.

Downey Jr.’s Iron Man was the hero that started it all for the MCU in 2008, and since his story ended with his demise in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, fans have constantly been theorizing how the fan-favorite hero could return.

3 Movies Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Could Return In

1.) Armor Wars

Marvel

Don Cheadle’s War Machine solo movie, Armor Wars, will celebrate the legacy of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in a story that will see advanced Stark technology falling into the wrong hands and Rhodey tasked with getting it back.

The Iron Man spin-off was originally charted as a Disney+ series before catching an upgrade to a big-screen movie, leading many to speculate the change was made in order to facilitate Downey Jr.’s return.

As Armor Wars isn’t currently expected to involve the Multiverse or time travel, Iron Man probably won’t be making any form of present-day appearance here. But perhaps he could still appear as an A.I. voice or through a flashback.

However, as Marvel Studios will probably want to make a jaw-dropping event out of Iron Man’s return akin to that of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, these options generally feel rather improbable.

2.) Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

Avengers Kang Dynasty MCU
Marvel

The Multiverse Saga has put Variants and alternate universes at the center of it all, and all of that will begin to culminate with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. So, even with Earth-616’s Tony Stark now deceased, the crossover event will offer an opportunity to bring in a Variant of Robert Downey Jr.’s hero.

Some theorized Jonathan Majors’ Kang could form the Legion of the Unliving, as he has in Marvel Comics, to combat the Avengers. The team brings together heroes resurrected and pulled from various time periods to take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes while also messing with their heads.

But alas, it seems rather unlikely Tony Stark will make his way into Avengers 5, as the studio will probably want the founding Avenger to sit out at least one ensemble blockbuster before returning. This will allow The Kang Dynasty to keep its focus on uniting the new heroes before Secret Wars brings back familiar faces.

But if Downey Jr. were to serve as a major player in Secret Wars, perhaps he could pop up in a post-credits scene in The Kang Dynasty to confirm his return and get fans excited for what’s to come one year later.

Then again, with the MCU having seen some decline in interest and reputation in the post-Endgame world, Marvel Studios may feel the need to pull in its OG heroes for Avengers 5 if there are fears of whether the more recent characters won’t be able to carry an ensemble blockbuster on the same level.

3.) Avengers: Secret Wars

Avengers Secret Wars MCU
Marvel

Undeniably the most likely project for Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man to make his big comeback comes with 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, the culmination of the Multiverse Saga. By that point, eight years and one Avengers movie will have passed since his last appearance, allowing his return to feel properly earned.

Most are expecting Secret Wars to bring back many classic Marvel heroes from the old Fox universe to the MCU and hopefully a few Spider-Men. If the studio looking to deliver fan service on levels unheard of with Avengers 6, including Downey Jr.’s Iron Man is a no-brainer.

The essence of Secret Wars sees the heroes of different universes going head-to-head, and there may be no better way to take the MCU full circle than to have Earth-616’s Avengers face-off with an alternate team led by Iron Man.

It’s tough to know just how big a role Downey Jr. would even end up having in the next Avengers movies if he were to come back. Marvel Studios will obviously want the focus to remain on its current leading faces, and placing too much focus on nostalgia could ultimately risk distracting from meaningful character work.

Will Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Actually Ever Return?

Robert Downey Jr. has always had a “never say never” attitude to a potential MCU return, but it would require the right storyline. So the actor probably won’t be looking to come back just to appear as fan service but rather will want to see a storyline that justifies his inclusion in a meaningful way.

Whatever project it may come in, Downey Jr.’s role will likely end up being beyond a cameo in order to ensure his return feels earned and worthwhile. But fans shouldn’t expect to see Iron Man back to leading the Avengers or taking a starring role in any MCU movie as the time for that has passed.

Additionally, Iron Man’s comeback probably won’t be confirmed, at least officially, until whatever project it comes in ultimately releases. After all, Spider-Man: No Way Home proved even rumors of returning fan favorites will be enough to drive interest and box office – something the studio may look to replicate.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty hits theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow on May 7, 2027. Armor Wars has no official release date yet.

  • The upcoming season will continue from the intense finale of season one, with tensions escalating and the Greens resorting to propaganda tactics.

Production for the upcoming second season of House of the Dragon is drawing close to its final stages, and now, new set photos have surfaced, offering a glimpse into a battle scene that is currently being filmed. Set against the backdrop of the vast world of Westeros, House of the Dragon ventures back in time, around two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, to delve into the complex power dynamics within the Targaryen dynasty. Central to the series is the fiery struggle for succession that erupts following King Viserys I Targaryen’s rule. And things are going to get very fiery, indeed.

The set photos, recently revealed by Redanian Intelligence on X/Twitter, offers a glimpse into a sequence filmed in the Bourne Woods of Surrey. Per reports, this scene is the Battle at Rook’s Rest, a conflict detailed in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. In this battle, Ser Criston Cole leads an army to the castle of Rook’s Rest, pitting dragonriders and forces from opposing Targaryen factions against each other. Check out the images below.

What to Expect from House of the Dragon Season 2

HBO

In the upcoming season of House of the Dragon, viewers can anticipate a continuation from the intense season one finale. The accidental death of Lucerys Velaryon has set the stage for a gripping saga, acting as a pivotal moment that fuels Rhaenyra Targaryen’s quest for justice. As tensions escalate, the Greens resort to the age-old tactic of manipulating public opinion through propaganda. This calculated maneuver seeks to sway the masses, fortifying the Greens’ cause and paving the way for a conflict that transcends dragons.

A glimpse into the narrative has previously emerged on social media platforms (via Digital Spy), with behind-the-scenes images and footage capturing a funeral procession led by a solemn crier. The procession is accompanied by the resonating beat of a drum, while the crier’s voice echoes through the atmosphere as they recount the accomplishments of “Rhaenyra the Cruel.”

The show will deviate from its initial episode count, offering slightly fewer episodes compared to its debut season. Clare Kilner, the director of the series, recently shed light on this decision, revealing that the adjustment is a result of a creative decision made by showrunner Ryan Condal, who now shoulders the responsibilities alone after the departure of Miguel Sapochnik. This alteration in the episode count signifies a deliberate shift in storytelling approach, aiming to deliver a more concentrated and intensified narrative experience.

“There are eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour. Ryan’s decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they’re jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events.”

An official release date for the second season of House of the Dragon has not yet been revealed.

The queen of romantic comedies Meg Ryan is making her comeback. The actress rose to fame with successful blockbusters such as When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle.

After an eight-year break from acting, Ryan is returning to her roots with the upcoming film What Happens Later.  Ryan is also a co-writer and director for the flick, which features The X-Files star David Duchovny as her leading man.

Ryan and Duchovny play Willa and Bill, a former couple who reunite while stranded at the airport. The couple reconnects and slowly wonders what could’ve been, and if there’s hope for them.

The film based on Steven Dietz’s play Shooting Star is scheduled for release on October 13, 2023.

This is the first time Meg Ryan and David Duchovny have worked together

What Happens Later isn’t scheduled for release for another month, but already the film is generating buzz. A trailer for the rom-com gave fans a preview of Ryan and Duchovny’s chemistry, which has sparked plenty of excitement.

While Ryan was familiar with Duchovny’s work and met him on a few occasions, this is the first time the pair have worked together. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan praised her co-star as “funny, and he’s smart, and he’s dear and irresistible.”

When it came to storytelling, Ryan drew inspiration from her previous rom-com experience.

“These rom-comes work when the two characters are somehow opposites and yet have a rhythm of intellect and humor and dialogue and banter that sort of indicates their compatibility. So, it’s just been really fun to see David embrace this guy who I don’t think is anything really like David. Whereas the Willa thing I can relate to.”

Fans can see if Ryan and Duchovny create another rom-com classic when What Happens Later releases next month.

It might be too early to call it, but The Hollywood Reporter Roma may have given the best party of the 80th Venice Film Festival.

THR Roma, the first European edition of The Hollywood Reporter, threw a starry and glam but also surprisingly chill bash Sunday night at their festival villa, a stone’s throw from The Excelsior Hotel on the Lido. THR Roma had its official launch, in Rome, in April but the Venice bash marked its international coming out, and the group used the occasion to present its first stand-alone print edition (more on that later).

There were shades of Pablo Sorrentino’s famed party sequence in The Great Beauty as a who’s who of the Italian film and fashion industries — among them the cast of Venice festival opener Comandante, including Italian superstar Pierfrancesco Favino and director Edoardo De Angelis and Valentino’s creative director Pier Paolo Piccioli rubbed shoulders with the likes of Pricilla Presley and Sophia Coppola. Presley and Coppola were in Venice for the world premiere of Priscilla, the director’s adaptation of Presley’s 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me about her life with the King of Rock and Roll.

(from left) Priscilla Presley, Pier Paolo Piccioli and Sophia Coppola at the THR Roma Venice Film Festival party on Sept. 2, 2023.

The business side of the industry was well-represented by the top brass at indie production giant Fremantle, which was awarded the inaugural THR International Producers of the Year award Sunday night. Andrea Scrosati, Group COO and CEO of Continental Europe at Fremantle, and Christian Vesper, CEO of Global Drama, accepted the award from THR on behalf of the company, which in a few short years has gone from a producer of mainly non-scripted and entertainment television (X Factor, Got Talent) to become one of the largest financiers and distributors of indie art house movies. They’ve made most of their films through their boutique subsidiaries, including The Apartment, Italy’s Wildside and Ireland’s Element Pictures. In the last three years alone, Fremantle has made more than 60 films, including five in Venice competition this year. Alongside Priscilla and Adagio, the group is represented by Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, starring Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo — arguably the hit of the 80th Biennale — Pietro Castellitto’s Enea and Saverio Costanzo’s Finally Dawn. Several other Fremantle execs were spotted at the THR Venice bash, including CEO, International Jens Richter and CEO, Southern Europe Jaime Ondarza.

Lorenzo Mieli, head of Italian shingle The Apartment and a one-man production whirlwind, was also seen mingling among the raucous crowd. Mieli is in Venice with Priscilla, which he co-produced, and Stefano Sollima’s Italian crime noir Adagio, also in competition. His upcoming slate includes Angelina Jolie’s feature Without Blood, also starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novel, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey.

The high point of the evening came when THR Roma’s editor-in-chief, Concita De Gregorio, dressed to dazzle in a shocking hot pink number from Valentino, presented the publication’s first-ever stand-alone print magazine. The glossy collector’s edition, headlined “The Lido of Dreams” features interviews with Sophia and Francis Ford Coppola, Luca Guadagnino, Susan Sarandon, Ari Aster, Oliver Stone, Sophie Loren and Dario and Asia Argento, among others. It also includes profiles of Venice legends from Harry’s Bar owner Arriso Cipriani to Rene Caovilla, designer of the high-heeled masterpieces that have graced the Lido red carpet on the feet of Rihanna, Julia Roberts, Sharon Stone and many more.

Valentino’s creative director Pier Paolo Piccioli designed the magazine cover, which shows the legendary, spectacularly mustachioed Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí reclining in a gondola in Venice’s Grand Canal, apparently lost in a dream. Piccioli used watercolors to paint, in his signature pink, a carnivalesque mask over Dalí’s face.

You can read the entire THR Roma Venice magazine online, in English, here.

Starz has lowered its annual subscription price from $74.99 a year to $69.99, Cord Cutters first reported and TechCrunch later confirmed. Starz emailed its subscribers the news on August 29th, explaining existing members will see the change in price on their next bill.

It’s not clear why Starz, which is home to TV shows like Outlander, The Serpent Queen, and Minx, made the move, but it’s a welcome one. Alison Hoffman, president of domestic networks at Starz, only told TechCrunch via email that “as one of the few streaming networks that is profitable, we are always looking for ways to drive success for the business while providing great value to our customers.”

“Our annual plan subscribers are some of our most valuable customers, so we wanted to find ways to drive more people into the plan and reward our existing customers,” added Hoffman.

It’s a surprising twist given many of Starz’s rivals are increasing prices. Disney, for example, recently announced it’ll be increasing the prices of its monthly ad-free Disney Plus and Hulu plans starting on October 12th. Meanwhile, Paramount Plus increased the price of its monthly plan back in late June.

Starz itself increased monthly subscription costs from $8.99 to $9.99 just a few months ago. You could read that change as part of a greater strategy to entice customers into paying more upfront for the annual plan. Regardless of why the annual plan is cheaper, if you’re the type to set up a subscription and forget about it for a few years, this is a win.

Netflix has unveiled a swathe of South African content including the first feature from Mandla Dube’s high-profile talent deal and a rom-com titled Soweto Love Story.

During a See What’s Next panel at Mip Africa today, the streamer reiterated a commitment to the nation and talked up a wealth of recently-struck partnerships, with Netflix Middle East and Africa content boss Ben Amadasun saying the investments will “enable us to uncover unique perspectives and diverse stories from South Africa to entertain our more than 238 million members [subscribers] around the world.”

Leading the slate is Heart of the Hunter, the first fruits of Netflix’s three-picture deal with South African Silverton Siege filmmaker Dube, which will launch next year. The feature is described as a twisty spy thriller based on the novel by Deon Meyer. Netflix revealed its Dube tie-up last year at an event in Johannesburg, while it also has deals in place with the likes of Mo Abudu and her Ebonylife Studios and director Kunle Afolayan.

Also launching next year is Soweto Love Story, a rom-com set in the heart of Johannesburg’s famous township.

Meanwhile, YA series Miseducation will drop on Netflix in a fortnight and follows a young, self-absorbed, first-year varsity student who finds herself on the canceled list after the police raid her house and seize her family’s assets because of her mother, while YOH’ Christmas is Netflix Africa’s first show about the holiday season.

Amadasun also unveiled new seasons of Blood & Water, Savage Beauty and Young, Famous & African along with talking up previously-announced feature Kandasamys: The Baby.

He detailed the Dube deal and pointed to other local partnerships including a multi-title book adaptation tie-up with Akin Omotoso and Ochre Media, a deal with director Donovan Marsh and a multi-title partnership with Gambit Films, amongst others.

“We are incredibly excited to continue with our investment in South African storytelling and to expand our relationships with these amazing storytellers,” added Amadasun.
