Production for the upcoming second season of House of the Dragon is drawing close to its final stages, and now, new set photos have surfaced, offering a glimpse into a battle scene that is currently being filmed. Set against the backdrop of the vast world of Westeros, House of the Dragon ventures back in time, around two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, to delve into the complex power dynamics within the Targaryen dynasty. Central to the series is the fiery struggle for succession that erupts following King Viserys I Targaryen’s rule. And things are going to get very fiery, indeed.

The set photos, recently revealed by Redanian Intelligence on X/Twitter, offers a glimpse into a sequence filmed in the Bourne Woods of Surrey. Per reports, this scene is the Battle at Rook’s Rest, a conflict detailed in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. In this battle, Ser Criston Cole leads an army to the castle of Rook’s Rest, pitting dragonriders and forces from opposing Targaryen factions against each other. Check out the images below.

What to Expect from House of the Dragon Season 2

HBO

In the upcoming season of House of the Dragon, viewers can anticipate a continuation from the intense season one finale. The accidental death of Lucerys Velaryon has set the stage for a gripping saga, acting as a pivotal moment that fuels Rhaenyra Targaryen’s quest for justice. As tensions escalate, the Greens resort to the age-old tactic of manipulating public opinion through propaganda. This calculated maneuver seeks to sway the masses, fortifying the Greens’ cause and paving the way for a conflict that transcends dragons.

A glimpse into the narrative has previously emerged on social media platforms (via Digital Spy), with behind-the-scenes images and footage capturing a funeral procession led by a solemn crier. The procession is accompanied by the resonating beat of a drum, while the crier’s voice echoes through the atmosphere as they recount the accomplishments of “Rhaenyra the Cruel.”

The show will deviate from its initial episode count, offering slightly fewer episodes compared to its debut season. Clare Kilner, the director of the series, recently shed light on this decision, revealing that the adjustment is a result of a creative decision made by showrunner Ryan Condal, who now shoulders the responsibilities alone after the departure of Miguel Sapochnik. This alteration in the episode count signifies a deliberate shift in storytelling approach, aiming to deliver a more concentrated and intensified narrative experience.

“There are eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour. Ryan’s decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they’re jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events.”

An official release date for the second season of House of the Dragon has not yet been revealed.
