'Spy Kids: Armageddon's Gina Rodriguez Calls Zachary

Larry Wilmore says “finally.” Greg Grunberg says “Mazel tov! Writers Strike Deal!!!”

Bill Wolkoff promises not to picket Dancing with the Stars.

The Writers Guild has reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to end its strike after nearly five months, and needless to say — the members have thoughts, lots of happy thoughts. And it’s all spilling out on social media.

Here’s a roundup of their reactions so far (keep refreshing for the latest):

Billy Ray: “To all my fellow writers— You earned this. You saved our profession. Now let’s continue to stand w the actors. And IATSE. And the Teamsters. And labor everywhere. That’s how we’ll save America.”

Wolkoff: “Day 146. It gives me great pleasure to say we will NOT be picketing Dancing With The Stars tomorrow! I really can’t wait to watch the premiere on Tuesday, because we did it! We won! #WGAStrong“

Glen Mazzara: “We should all be so proud. And grateful to our Negotiating Committee. #Closers.”

Philip Ascove: “WE DID IT!!! #wgastrong“

Levar Burton: “Happy news! The details will tell the tale however, this is a huge step in the right direction! #bydhttmwfi“

Justine Bateman: “Being in a union, and going on strike with it, is the type of thing that’s become unfashionable in society. It means you are sacrificing for others; committing to something bigger than yourself; putting in effort because those in the past did it for you, & now it’s your turn. It may be new terms that affect only the newest of the union’s members, or the part-timers, or the elders, and not necessarily you, specifically. But that’s not the point. “You” are not the point. ALL of you are the point. The union, the members as a whole, is the point. Being in a union is one of the most fantastic opportunities in life, to have the chance to stand up for the group, for the strongest and the weakest alike. What a magnificent experience in which to participate.”

Warren Leight: “Strikes are hard. They wear you down. Sometimes they fail. Sometimes the good guys win. Thanks to all who walked the line, and held the line. May we all be back to work soon.”

Josh Gondelman: “This is probably the happiest I’ve ever felt on Yom Kippur.”

Travis Helwit tweeted a meme of a crown and wrote “@ellenstutzman you dropped this.”

Welcome to your first look at what’s coming to Netflix in the US over the next seven days. Incredibly, we don’t quite have a full picture of what’s coming up in October yet, but we’ve pieced together all the known movies, series, and games set to hit the streamer over the next week and picked out three of our most anticipated.

Unbelievably, Netflix has still yet to unveil its October 2023 lineup in full. We suspect this is because they’ve got a few October announcements on Wednesday as part of the DROP 01 initiative. In any case, this list will be particularly incomplete when it comes to the October 1st additions. Keep an eye on our What’s New on Netflix section for more when we get it on Sunday for the full list.

Featured Videos – Article Continues Below…

Dozens of movies and series are leaving Netflix this week, so make sure you watch any you need to watch now or see our must-watch picks of the removals here.

Now, let’s take a look at a few of our most anticipated titles coming up this week:

Most Anticipated Releases on Netflix This Week

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023)

Coming to Netflix: Wednesday

Wes Anderson makes his grand debut on Netflix this week, utilizing the incredible worlds Roald Dahl conjured. With an all-star cast, this 40-minute short tells the story “about a rich man who learns about a guru who can see without using his eyes and then sets out to master the skill in order to cheat at gambling.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, Dev Patel, and Richard Ayoade star.

The release of this particular short kicks off a few days worth of Wes Anderson shorts coming to Netflix, with The Swan, The Ratcatcher, and Poison to release in the following days.

Reptile (2023)

Coming to Netflix: Friday

Releasing slightly earlier on Netflix than previously billed, Reptile is the big new high-budget movie starring Justin Timberlake and Benicio del Toro.

Here’s the official synopsis of the new thriller:

“Following the brutal murder of a young real estate agent, a hardened detective attempts to uncover the truth in a case where nothing is as it seems, and by doing so dismantles the illusions in his own life.”

The movie recently debuted at TIFF to mixed-to-negative reviews from most critics, but this one could turn out to be a crowd-pleaser. CBR concluded the movie “is something of a noble misfire, willing to take risks with the genre and its expectations even if the end result leaves a bit to be desired.”

Django (Season 1)

Coming to Netflix: Sunday

Loosely based on the cult movie by Sergio Corbucci, this series that’s being licensed for the first time in the USA tells the story of a man seeking revenge who ends up fighting for something greater.

Sadly, Django will come on the same day another excellent Western series leaves the service. We’re referring to the limited series Hatfields & McCoys that features Yellowstone star Kevin Costner. We’d recommend watching both of these shows for your Western fix this week.

It appears the writers strike is finally coming to an end. On Sunday, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) told its members that the guild has reached a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on a new minimum basic agreement.

After 146 days on strike, nearly the longest in guild history, the WGA says it has reached a deal in principle on “all deal points,” which have included a revised residuals formula, regulations on so-called “mini-rooms,” a means of preserving the writers room, a residual that provides data transparency and rewards success, and protections from members’ work being replaced by artificial intelligence.

Specifics of the deal were not immediately available at press time, but told members that it would share contract language soon.

The guild has made clear that “no one is to return to work” until the contract has been ratified, but picketing is suspended.

“What we have won in this contract – most particularly, everything we have gained since May 2nd – is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty of the past 146 days. It is the leverage generated by your strike, in concert with the extraordinary support of our union siblings, that finally brought the companies back to the table to make a deal,” the WGA said in a statement. “We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership.”

The next steps will be for the WGA to complete the “Memorandum of Agreement” with the AMPTP and then have the negotiating committee vote on sending it to the WGA West and East boards for approval. The bodies will also vote on whether to lift the “restraining order” and end the strike at a time still to be determined once the contract is ratified by members.

Leadership is tentatively scheduled to meet Tuesday, the guild says, at which point the full summary of the contract will be provided to members. The guild will also schedule meetings for members to learn more and assess the contract before voting.

It’s been a long back and forth to reach this point. The WGA and AMPTP first agreed to meet on Friday, August 4 three months into the strike, and formal negotiations resumed on August 11. At that point, the studios made what the WGA said was the AMPTP’s one and only counterproposal, and guild leadership ultimately met with top CEOs, including Bob Iger, Ted Sarandos, David Zaslav, and Donna Langley. When a deal still wasn’t reached, the AMPTP made the move to publicly release the specifics of its proposal, forcing the WGA to call that deal “not good enough.”

All that led to a stalemate of nearly a month in which both sides felt like they deserved a response from the other. Given the uncertainty, things only got uglier. Studios that had projected an end to the strike by early September started delaying movies and pausing overall deals with showrunners in waves, leaving many writers without the means to support their non-writing staffs.

Talk show hosts, most notably Drew Barrymore and WGA member Bill Maher, started to make plans to return to the air without writers employed, sparking fierce backlash online and forcing them to delay for longer. Efforts by top showrunners to schedule a private meeting with guild leadership sparked rumors of dissent, and the meeting never came to pass. The WGA also released a blistering report that called on lawmakers to bring antitrust regulation and investigate anti-competitive practices at Disney, Netflix, and Amazon, and the guild even urged individual companies to break from the AMPTP and negotiate with writers individually.

But both sides eventually returned to the table on September 20, with the CEOs Iger, Sarandos, Zaslav, and Langley all unexpectedly taking a hands-on approach in negotiations. The four remained in the room for three straight days of late night bargaining sessions but were not present on Saturday when lawyers gathered to finalize language.

Since beginning the strike on May 2, the writers have demonstrated incredible resolve. Even though there were grumblings and backchannel conversations, we didn’t see the organized pockets of dissenters trying to go around the guild as we did in the last strike. Their leverage was bolstered by SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 14, and from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which agreed to not cross picket lines and helped disrupt the fall TV schedule and indefinitely delay many shows and films.

The Directors Guild reached their own tentative deal with the studios back on June 4, and despite some vocal dissent from some hyphenate writers-directors, DGA membership officially ratified the new deal on June 23 with 87 percent of the 6,728 members who voted choosing to ratify it.

All eyes now turn back to the actors, who have their own demands as it pertains to a streaming revenue sharing model and a more elaborate set of protections when it comes to AI, particularly for background actors.

From the beginning, SAG-AFTRA leadership expressed a willingness to return to the negotiating table. However, the guild showed its solidarity with the WGA when it modified its interim agreement policy such that WGA-covered projects would not be eligible to sign the agreement. And talks did not resume with the actors amid the stalemate between the WGA and AMPTP.

Doja Cat’s Scarlet, her fourth studio album, marks her highly anticipated return following 2021’s Planet Her, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and delivered plenty of Hot 100 hits.

She’ll be heading out on a 24-date trek in support of the album with The Scarlet Tour, which kicks off on Halloween in San Francisco and wraps Dec. 13 in Chicago. Ice Spice and Doechii have been announced as opening acts.

Doja Cat‘s Scarlet tops this week’s new

After 146 days, the Writers Guild of America is close to heading back to work.

The WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) resumed bargaining on Wednesday and reached a tentative deal on Sunday. Final language for the parties’ contract is still being finalized, but should the WGA negotiating committee followed by the WGA West board and the WGA East approve, the contract will then be the subject of a vote among guild membership, where it will likely pass and end the historic strike that began on May 2.

In an email sent to members at 7:10 p.m. PT, the WGA said, “We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership.”

Before the news, the strike was reaching record length — the WGA’s longest ever work stoppage lasted for 154 days in 1988. Though the current strike is still technically on until the membership vote, with new deal terms settled on the issues of staffing minimums, artificial intelligence and more, guild members naturally have cause to celebrate.

“THANK YOU TO EVERY MEMBER OF THE WGA AND OUR NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE!” posted Robin Thede, creator of “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I will still be on the picket line with my fellow SAG-AFTRA members to carry this over the finish line but tonight we celebrate!”

“We did it. We have a tentative deal,” said Adam Conover, a member of the WGA negotiating committee. “Over the coming days, we’ll discuss and vote on it, together, as a democratic union. But today, I want to thank every single WGA member, and every fellow worker who stood with us in solidarity. You made this possible. Thank you.”

“This is the end, beautiful friends,” said “American Crime Story” co-creator Larry Karaszewski.

Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass also posted about the strike, noting that she was “grateful” for the “fair agreement.”

Robert King, who created “The Good Wife,” “The Good Fight” and “Evil” with his wife Michelle King, posted a simple: “We have a deal.”

After coming together once again at the 2023 MTV VMAs, Lance Bass is still in awe of how special it felt to reunite with his *NSYNC bandmates on stage, to the massive cheer of the crowd.

Bass walked the red carpet on night one of this year’s iHeartRadio Music Festival on Friday, and he spoke with ET’s Cassie DiLaura about the unforgettable experience of joining together at the VMAs.

“It is beautiful, you know? To be this age and the fans are still this excited, it is a dream come true,” Bass shared with a smile. “I had no idea the fandom would go this nuts.”

“I blame Taylor Swift,” he added with a laugh, in reference to how the group’s reunion culminated in presenting a star-struck Swift with the award for Best Pop Video. “I think she she sicced the Swifties on us and I think the Swifties and the *NSYNCers just kind of created this tsunami. And I think it’s been so fun!”

Bass was joined on stage by bandmates JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake and Chris Kirkpatrick when they handed Swift her award, and the celebrated songstress couldn’t contain her excitement as being near the pop icons.

“I’m not doing well pivoting from this to this,” Swift said of her award, telling the group. “I have your dolls! You’re pop personified, so to receive this from your golden pop hands is really too much”

And the singer spoke for *NSYNC fans everywhere when she speculated what the reunion might mean for the group’s future: “They’re gonna do something and I need to know what it is!”

Although, despite the public outcry, Bass says there’s no definitive plans for a reunion tour or special as of now.

“I’ve been telling the fans, like, we don’t have solid plans right now. Because, you know, we’re waiting for the strike to end we’ve got things to do,” Bass said. “But [the fans are] definitely shaping our future.”

That being said, the group did recently record their first original song in over 20 years, “Better Place,” for the upcoming soundtrack for the upcoming animated film Trolls Band Together — the third film in the Trolls franchise, which featured the voice acting talents of Timberlake himself.

Earlier this month, Timberlake took to Instagram and gave his followers a behind-the-scenes look at the studio session in which they laid down the track.

“It was pretty emotional, the first time we all got in the studio together,” Bass recalled of the recording session. “Back in March, we decided to you know, get back together and have some fun and it was like no [time] had passed.”

“But there was there was a lot of tears. It was just tears of joy. And it was just a beautiful moment,” he continued. “Like, time does so much and for us to finally be together, it just feels right.”

Fans will get a chance to listen to the group’s song when it drops on Sept. 29, well ahead of the release of Trolls Band Together on Nov. 17. Check out the video below to hear more about the band’s recent reunion.

Destiny 2 players – and its development team – have had it tough this week. Not only has the sci-fi shooter endured DDoS attacks that have taken the game down for hours at a time, but players have continued to experience connection errors and strange bugs and glitches over the weekend, too.

Beyond confirmation of maintenance over the weekend, developer Bungie has yet to formally comment on the issues plaguing players, but some have taken to Reddit and Destiny’s social media channels to report a range of strange happenings, including doors that don’t open, PvP scores that don’t update, and even pacifist enemies that refuse to engage.

As u/Indecisive_um said on the Destiny subreddit earlier today, “the game is currently broken, it’s not just you”.

The game is currently broken, it’s not just you. from r/DestinyTheGame

“If you’re trying to use interactions but can’t or doors aren’t opening, don’t worry, it’s not you, it’s everyone,” Indecisive_um – just one of dozens of thread starters bringing attention to the current issues – wrote.

“It seems […] something has broken big time with the game, and some of the following issues have popped up.”

The thread then lists a handful of issues that players have reported today, including:

  • Doors are not opening for any activity including Savathun’s Spire, Dungeons like Prophecy or Shattered Throne, and even the Helm.
  • Most, if not all, interactions are not working like the Chalice of Light in Crotas End, or the rally flag for public events.
  • Enemies are bugged out to the point that it seems they can’t die, nor can they notice the player in any way.

“I’m sure there’s more things going on that I haven’t listed, but just wanted to put this out for anyone who may be wondering what’s going on,” the OP said. “In the meantime, it might be a good idea to play another game while Bungie tries to address the issue, or do what I’m doing and get a chance to look up close to some of these enemies in their natural habitat.”

Whilst it seems that most issues have since been resolved – many suggest rebooting your system, particularly if you’re in the midst of a heavy session – some players report issues still persisted after Bungie’s background maintenance earlier today (thanks, PCGN).

Last week, Bungie announced plans to temporarily disable players from using crafted weapons in a bid to get on top of another in-game glitch.

After acknowledging that players could give Legendary guns Exotic traits – essentially circumventing the game’s usual balance systems and allowing players to equip what is, in essence, three exotic weapons at once – Bungie confirmed that it’s “working on two fixes” that it hopes will address the issue.

The first was a server-side update that will disable all crafted weapons from being equipped, after which the team will address “illegal” weapons by resetting them “to a default state”.

Earlier this week, Bungie said this issue was “now resolved”.

“Illegitimate frames and perks on crafted weapons have been replaced by legitimate ones. Please be advised that any players attempting to utilize the previous crafting exploit will receive a WEASEL error code and be kicked to the login screen.”

Destiny 2 players – and its development

After nearly 150 days, Hollywood studios have finally come to tentative agreement with the Writers Guild of America for a new contract. Barring unforeseen objections from WGA members, the writers’ portion of the Hollywood strike is effectively at an end.

So, how soon will your favorite shows be back on your screens? When will your most anticipated films head back into production?

The short answer: As soon as possible. WGA members have consistently said they’re eager to get back into the writers rooms, and the studios, represented in guild negotiations by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, have taken a heavy financial hit during the strike and need to restart production urgently to reverse it.

But before that can happen, some other boxes need to be ticked off first, starting with ratification of the contract.

Guild leaders will now send the new contract to members for a ratification vote. The guild hasn’t provided a timeline for the vote yet, but it will need to provide enough time for members to review the contract before casting votes.

In June, the Directors Guild of America members ratified their new contract in just over two weeks. Each guild has its own rules, but we could be looking at a similar timeline here. TheWrap has reached out to WGA for comment. Well update this when we know more.

However long it takes, the guild remains technically on strike until the contract is ratified.

Another complicating factor is SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 13, and who the WGA has vowed to support through the end of their side of things.

As of this writing, the actors guild and studios still have not set a date to pick negotiations back up, but insiders say resuming talks with the actors has been top of mind for some studios, especially when talks with the WGA had hit another standstill.

As actors and writers went on strike for largely the same reasons, it’s likely the actors guild is motivated to secure a deal on terms similar to WGA’s as soon as possible.

One of the last sticking points in talks between WGA and AMPTP was a goal to secure protections for members who want wait until SAG-AFTRA has a deal before returning to work. Or, as WGA put it in a memo to members in early August, “to honor other unions’ picket lines as they have honored ours during this strike.”

It isn’t yet known what the deal includes, and well update as soon as we know.

That said, once the WGA deal is ratified, some shows will be able to start sooner than others — namely, talk shows and variety productions like “Saturday Night Live.” At the end of August, “SNL” director Liz Patrick told TheWrap her hope is that the sketch series can be a “light switch” production.

“I don’t want to speak as as the voice of ‘SNL,’ but I will say, from my perspective of it all, as soon as the strikes are resolved, I think we are the type of show that literally, if we know by Monday or Tuesday — or, hopefully Monday, just to give to the writers Tuesday — we just turn the lights on and we go,” she said at the time.

Then there’s the talk shows. Daytime shows like “The View” and more have continued on amid the strike, just without WGA writers. In May, Whoopi Goldberg explained that viewers would see what the show looks like “when it’s not slicked up.”

And indeed, the women — along with the hosts of multiple other daytime shows — have effectively improvised their material since, keeping things on the air. So, in theory, their typical writers could simply walk in the next day after ratification, and the show won’t miss a beat.

As for late night, that’s a little more unclear. As we noted, they are among those who could come back the fastest — much like they were the first to go dark — but the exact timeline would be at the discretion of each show. That said, an individual with knowledge of the matter told TheWrap in August that late night could be up and running in as little as two weeks.

Reps for the series did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Meanwhile, scripted shows will undoubtedly be the last to return to screens. Because, while their writers can get to work on new scripts, they still need their actors to return. Former NBC studios president Tom Nunan told TheWrap in August that “the sunniest scenarios would have network shows back in production in January.”

But insiders note that it could happen quicker than people might think. On Thursday, “Law & Order: SVU” showrunner Warren Leight outlined a path on X, formerly known as Twitter, that would allow for 13-episode seasons of scripted series to survive if the strike ended by October.

“Writers — once hired — would need less than the normal five or six weeks of lead time to start the season, since they’d ‘only’ be doing 13 episodes,” Leight wrote. He went on to say that if “everybody agreed” to having one week off for the Christmas break rather than the traditional two weeks of unpaid leave, productions “might be able to get five eps shot before the new year.”

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav was also optimistic this month, telling analysts during an investor conference hosted by Goldman Sachs at the start of September that “as soon as these strikes are resolved, everybody is ready to get back to work.”

Like we mentioned though, SAG still needs to reach a deal themselves. Without actors, no scripted series will return. But, “Star Trek: Picard” actress and the actors guild’s Los Angeles VP Michelle Hurd explained to TheWrap in August that there was very little chance that SAG would get back into talks before the WGA got their own deal.

“The bottom line is that we can’t go back into negotiations until they come to an agreement with the WGA,” Hurd said at the time. “So this makes it, you know, as long as there’s actual true good faith bargaining happening, then that path to us getting back is closer, because they’re at that table.”

The actors have worked together in films like Devdas and Happy New Year among others.

Shah Rukh Khan reunited with his Devdas co-star Jackie Shroff at CM Eknath Shinde’s Ganpati puja on Sunday.

Shah Rukh Khan has been busy basking in the record-breaking success of his latest release, Jawan. The Atlee directorial film was released earlier this month and has entered the Rs. 1000 crore club in less than 30 days. However, the actor is now making headlines for his appearance at Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s residence for Ganpati puja on Sunday. The puja was a star-studded event, but what excited netizens was the actor’s reunion with his Devdas co-star Jackie Shroff.

Shah Rukh looked dapper in a royal blue kurta with a white salwar. He completed the look by tying his hair in his signature ponytail. She bumped into Jackie Shroff on his way to the Ganpati idol and planted a kiss on his cheek. Jackie wore a similar outfit to Shah Rukh’s ensemble but styled it with a yellow bandana and a white stole with blue accents. The two actors indulged in a quick conversation as they laughed and posed for the paparazzi.

Fans of the actors took to the comments section to express their appreciation. One Shah Rukh fan wrote, “He is so fine at the age of 56.” Another added, “Mashallah srk❤️” A fan of Jackie Shroff commented, “Jaggu bhai”

Besides Jackie, Shah Rukh also reunited with Salman Khan as the superstars posed with CM Eknath Shinde. This left their fans excited for their likely joint feature in the upcoming film Tiger Vs Pathaan.

While there were initial reports of Aditya Chopra planning a joint script narration session for Salman and Shah Rukh, it was recently reported that the story was presented to them individually during separate meetings over a month ago.

DNA quoted a source as saying, “Tiger vs Pathaan’s script is locked after the two mega-stars of Hindi cinema gave their nod to the script. This film is a huge milestone moment because it sees the two giants of Indian cinema to come together for a full-fledged film after their box office juggernaut Karan Arjun.”

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan is currently seen in Jawan. The film also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Sanya Malhotra among others. Shah Rukh’s long time co-star Deepika Padukone also has an extended cameo in the film.

17 I Love You, Man (2009)

i love you man paul rudd jason segal dog leash
Paramount Pictures

I Love You, Man is a delightful spin on the rom-com, making a bromantic comedy that is all about making a best friend. The comedy film tells the story of real-estate agent Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd). Klaven has everything going right for him. From a successful job to a loving soon-to-be wife (Rashida Jones), he seems to be doing everything right. However, he doesn’t have many male friends due to his busy work and home life. So, of course, he is struggling to find a best man for his wedding. This prompts him to go on a quest to find his beloved bud before the big day.

I Love You, Man, is hilarious but also heartfelt. It also deconstructs many preconceived notions about male friendships and chips away at some of the more toxic traits most movies and television shows associate with them. I Love You, Man is one of the more underrated comedies of the 2000s and one that will put a smile on your face.

16 Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

The Family in Little Miss Sunshine
Fox Searchlight Pictures

Little Miss Sunshine is a gem of an underdog story that has pleased the audience for almost two decades. It circles around Olive, the youngest member of the Hoover family, with just one wish – to compete in a beauty pageant. Her eccentric, dysfunctional, yet decidedly lovable family casts out on a road trip to California. Through laughs and quiet moments of grace, the movie is all about finding purpose and joy in each other’s company. Steve Carell, Tony Collette, Paul Dano, and Greg Kinnear shine as they drag the family out of the gloom. By the time the journey ends, it doesn’t even matter that the beauty pageant turned out to be a misadventure.

15 Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Lizzy (Keira Knightley) and Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) finally admit their love.
Universal Pictures

To be fair, any movie that adapts the works of Jane Austen instantly becomes re-watch-worthy material. As for Pride and Prejudice, it is simply a cinematic lavishness for the senses. The story brings to life Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy’s sweeping tale of love and romance. With Mrs. Bennet cracking their daughters to find suitors and one wealthy man moving in close to the house, it is lovely how the period piece features a dream-romantic cast, lusciously appointed sets, and colorful costumes. But beneath the visual wonder and magic is the very portrayal of maidenly strength, dramatic irony, and romance against the odds.

10 Singin’ in the Rain (1952)

Singin in the Rain with Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly

How could a feel-good list be complete without this breezy and exuberant classic? Singin’ in the Rain is a 1952 movie that personifies Hollywood glamor and good cheer. In 1920s Los Angeles, when silent film stars are faced with the challenge of transitioning to talking, a talented duo had to adapt while another aspiring actress blossomed into a revelation. Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen, and Donald O’Connor, arguably cinema’s most charismatic stars, the movie dazzles right from the opening numbers. Even after 70 years, with lavish sets and technicolor cinematography, exchanging witty banter and dancing its way around, Singin’ in the Rain remains the gold standard of musicals.

9 Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

It is hard to find a greater overall sequel than Top Gun: Maverick. Over three decades after the events of the first film, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is still pushing the envelope and disobeying orders. The only tricky part is that one of the graduates is the son (Miles Teller) of his late, great best friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Maverick must make peace with the past and overcome his fears to ensure everyone is properly prepared and can come home safely.

Top Gun: Maverick was the movie event of summer 2022. Part of the appeal of the film, and why it inspired so much repeat viewing, was the old-time nature of the film. It was a throwback to simpler times, with a classic story that was not trying to subvert expectations or deconstruct a genre but instead deliver an entertaining thrill ride. Top Gun: Maverick is a movie that made everyone watching it feel good.

6 The Big Lebowski (1998)

The Big Lebowksi
Gramercy Pictures

“The Dude abides.” For Jeff Bridges’ character, the words translate to ‘going with the flow’, and that is exactly what he does in The Big Lebowski. The comedy cult classic from the Coen Brothers follows Bridges as “The Dude,” a quirky stoner caught in a case of mistaken identity that pulls him into a bizarre kidnapping plot. Every odd character, unplanned detour, and perpetually quotable dialogue delivers laughter in spades. And still, there are moments of truth in the silliness that you cannot help but love. After all, who doesn’t go for nonsense, especially if it means following your heart and earning the love and laughter you deserve?

Ever notice how each person has

Locally-made fantasy drama “Sleep” headed the Korean box office charts for the third successive weekend. But theaters were comatose ahead of bigger new releases timed for the Chuseok holiday season.

“Sleep” earned just $1.06 million between Friday and Sunday, with a 27.5% market share, according to data from Kobis the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. Its cumulative after 19 days in cinemas now stands at $9.50 million.

The film’s three weekends at the top of the chart have coincided with low power competition and a month-long decline in cinema attendance. The nationwide box office aggregate for the latest weekend was worth just $3.85 million. That was the quietest box office weekend of 2023.

Korean comedy drama “Marrying the Mafia Returns” released on Thursday and took second place. Over its opening four days it managed $684,000, with $523,000 of that over the weekend proper.

Hollywood import, “Gran Turismo” also revved slowly. It opened on Wednesday and earned $585,000 over its opening five days, with $413,000 between Friday and Sunday.

“Oppenheimer,” which had been one of the few standouts of a weakening August-September period, held on to fourth place with $258,000 in its sixth weekend of release. Its cumulative is now $25.3 million – the tenth best score of the year to date.

“A Haunting in Venice,” in its second weekend, earned $215,000. Since releasing on Sept. 13, it has accumulated $1.41 million.

French animation title “Epic Tails” (aka “Argonuts”) released on Thursday and earned $191,000 over the weekend, and $264,000 over its opening our days.

Korean-produced “Honeysweet” took $121,000 over the weekend, extending its cumulative since Aug. 15 to $9.99 million.

Japanese animation, “The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes” took $110,000 for a cumulative of $478,000 after two weekends of release.

“Dr Cheon and the Lost Talisman,” doing previews ahead of a Wednesday release, sneaked into ninth place with $98,000 from just 16 screens. Its pre-release total now stands at $145,000.

“Concrete Utopia,” a disaster action film that is also Korea’s Oscar contender, took $85,000 over the weekend. Its cumulative since Aug. 9, is $28.0 million.

More firepower is expected to be brought to Korean cinemas over the next two weeks, aiming to take advantage of the multi-day and extended Korean Thanksgiving (Chuseok) holidays. “Dr Cheon” will be opened wider and in terms of pre-sales looks to be the winner.

Competition will come from: patriotic period sports drama “Boston 1947,” from hit-making director Kang Je-gyu; “Cobweb” a 1980s-set film within a film from Kim Jee-woon; and imported horror title “The Nun II.”

The following week will see releases of Korean rom-com “30 Days” and Gareth Edwards AI action adventure film “The Creator.”

This week on the podcast, an Aussie-US, Lionsgate-WWE Films co-production, See No Evil.

This one rests on the formidable shoulders of wrestler, Kane, the antagonist here and chief antagonist to The Undertaker during the heyday/attitude era of WWE.

Juvie/criminal types are taken to a prison work program, but rather than picking up garbage on some interstate, they’re tasked to clean up some derelict hotel.

They’re supervised by two corrections officers, and as they’re going about their duties (rather lazily, it should be said), they are being stalked…by…a giant…hulking…killer.

Hollywood heaves a sigh of relief. The WGA and major studios and streamers have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract that promises to end the 146-day strike that has taken a heavy toll across the content industry.

Negotiators for the Writers Guild of America and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reached the finish line Sunday after four consecutive days of negotiations. Day 4 on Saturday mostly involved lawyers for the guild and AMPTP hashing out the fine print of language around complicated and groundbreaking additions to the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement. The nitty-gritty details of language around the use of generative AI in content production was one of the last items that the sides worked on before closing the pact.

The three-year contract will be sent to WGA members for a ratification vote. After nearly five months on strike – the work stoppage began May 2 – it’s highly likely to pass muster with the WGA’s 11,000 members, especially with the enthusiastic endorsement of WGA leaders. As momentum built this week, negotiators began to look at the approach of the Yom Kippur holiday on Sunday as a soft target deadline.

No doubt – the WGA prevailed in forcing Hollywood’s largest employers to address the guild’s major priorities in the first full-fledged contract negotiation since 2017 (the 2020 talks were hampered by the pandemic). The guild’s insistence in achieving a minimum guaranteed staff level for episodic TV was considered an extreme long-shot when the contract discussions began in March. The unwavering support of the vast majority of WGA members was the muscle that allowed the guild’s negotiating committee, led by Chris Keyser and David Goodman, to dig in on priority issues. They achieved a new-model streaming residual formula that should help fellow striking union SAG-AFTRA in its quest to achieve a revenue-based residual. The WGA’s formula amounts to a bonus system based on pre-determined, high-bar performance benchmarks for individual titles. But it’s nonetheless more than industry dealmakers predicted the guild would secure when the first round of WGA-AMPTP talks began in earnest last spring.

The end of the WGA strike will hasten the end of SAG-AFTRA’s walkout. It will also start the process of returning the creative community to its typical cycles of production, distribution, marketing and promotion cycle for content. Production of TV and film has been in state of turmoil since the start of the year when production slowed down in the face of the May 1 deadline set by the WGA’s contract expiration. It was no secret as early as last year that the 2023 round of guild contract negotiations would be challenging, given the level of structural change across TV and film.

Hollywood is eager to get back to work. But after a five-month pause in production, studios and streamers will need time to get shows and movies back on their feet. As word of progress at the negotiating table spread earlier this week, quiet planning for a return to production stepped up with producers and executives inquiring about the availability of stages and other production resources.

The terms of the tentative agreement have not been formally disclosed.

The sides returned to the bargaining table Sept. 20 after talks had stalled for a month. Four key Hollywood leaders participated in three days of marathon negotiations that finally broke the logjam. The executives: Disney’s Bob Iger, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and David Zaslav of Warner Bros. Discovery.

The AMPTP first attempted to address the guild’s demands for a viewership residual and minimum staffing guarantee in a proposal on Aug. 11. The WGA maintained that the offer was riddled with loopholes and exceptions that made many of its provisions meaningless.

The AMPTP returned Sept. 20 with another set of proposals, which it hoped would break the logjam.

Once Labor Day came and went, WGA negotiating committee co-chairs Chris Keyser and David Goodman faced heightened internal pressure from some prominent members to restart the negotiations process. Now that a deal with the WGA is in hand, AMPTP negotiators will turn their attention to SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 14. Production and promotion cannot fully restart until SAG-AFTRA members vote to ratify a new agreement.

Telly’s Take

Unless they decide to publicize viewership, it is difficult to predict whether MGM+ will cancel or renew The Winter King for season two. The series also airs in the UK, so the outlet isn’t footing the bill alone. The Winter King is based on some popular novels, has a positive Rotten Tomatoes score, and seems to fit well with the other MGM+ programs. So, I think there’s a good chance it will be renewed. Dan Harmon’s new adult animated series “Krapopolis” finally debuts Sunday evening after years in the works at Fox. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the show’s staff to shake up virtually every step of development and production, from a virtual writers’ room to a Zoom table read.

Just before the pandemic hit the U.S. in March 2020, Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn encouraged Harmon to dust off an old idea the “Community” creator had shared about a show set in ancient Greece, but had yet to explore.

“Dan had this idea to do a show in ancient Greece, and that was about it — that’s all we had,” executive producer Steve Levy told TheWrap. “Dan loved the world, and was a myth buff when he was a kid and really took to the stories. We were like, ‘sure, we could explore that world,’ [but] we really didn’t have anything.”

As Harmon and his team quickly started on a pilot script to send to the network, the “Rick and Morty” creator immediately knew he didn’t want the ancient Greek civilization to have developed a written language yet. Harmon found that period was “the most fun and most challenging era” to write within, Levy explained, as writers can’t layer in language jokes (i.e. a funny sign) into the plot.

Harmon delivered the savvy social commentary Fox executives wanted out of a new adult animated comedy. Fox was so happy with the pilot that they picked up “Krapopolis” after just one script.

“I think when [Fox execs] read the pilot, they were like, ‘this is the perfect blend of everything we asked for, and all of the genius we hoped to mine from Dan Harmon,’” Levy said. “It’s commentary on today’s society through the lens of older-generation humans, that have similar struggles as we do emotionally and within their relationships, but takes place in a time where people are eating each other and there’s incest.”

Now picked up to series, “Krapopolis” staff began working on an “aggressive schedule.” The show simultaneously juggled casting, writing and design, leaving the writers’ room in a unique position of crafting a first season without having final sketches of the main cast.

“It was really hard to be writing something we didn’t have any visuals for, or like a voice or anything of how these characters sounded outside of our own heads,” Levy said. “When you bring just the one script into the writers’ room, and people are reading it, everyone’s hearing it differently. … But we needed to really unite the room under a single vision, which took a while, because we didn’t have voice actors or art generated yet.”

After throwing a wide casting net, the series recruited Richard Ayoade to take on the principal role of Tyrannis, a mortal who has been dubbed King of Krapopolis, while Hannah Waddingham plays his mother, a goddess named Deliria. Matt Berry voices Shlub, Tyrannis’ father who is half-centaur, half-manticore, with Pam Murphy playing Tyrannis’ half-sister Stupendous and Duncan Trussell as Tyrannis’ half-brother, Hippocampus.

Once the voice actors were secured, Levy notes that the character sketches could get more granular, as they began to incorporate elements of the actors into the characters.

“We loved Richard’s hair and were like, ‘that’s a really fun design choice for Tyrannis.’ Or for Shlub with Matt Berry, it was like, ‘why don’t we give him a little bit of that suave, handsome [look] but [with] a little bit of gruff,” Levy said. “There was definitely a little bit of a back and forth between the design work and the casting process — they did help each other out.”

The pandemic shifted writing on the show completely onto Zoom, where Harmon and Levy had the formidable task of fostering a virtual writers’ room with a group of writers who hadn’t worked together.

“This show was the first one that Dan and I did where it started entirely in COVID, and so we didn’t get, didn’t have the opportunity to build the same rapport with our coworkers like we did on other shows like ‘Rick and Morty,’ ‘Little Demon’ or even ‘Strange Planet,’” Levy said. “You have to learn the technology; you have to learn how to pitch again in a writers’ room, because you’re not all in the same space [and] the rules change a little bit.”

While working fully virtually wasn’t perfect by any means, the team leveraged it as best they could for their first Zoom table read — which Levy recalls as “bizarre” — by displaying the final character sketches in the background for each of the corresponding voice actors.

“Sometimes there’s this awkward pause, or somebody speaking over somebody else by accident, so it’s not as fluid, but you get through it,” Levy said. “For the first time hearing the pilot script, read by all of the actors, it was proof in the pudding that there’s a show here — this is fun, we cast it well and we’re on track for something very cool.”

The series also features a slew of guest stars, including Daveed Diggs, Jane Lynch, Ben Stiller, Susan Sarandon, Joel McHale, Dave Franco, Yvette Nicole Brown, Will Forte, Steve Buscemi and Stephanie Beatriz, among others.

“Fox loves having a big name for guest role, and when there was a new character that felt right to cast a big star for, we would talk to Fox about who we might want and we would come up with lists. … Sometimes it took a little push from Dan or one of our personal relationships with the actors,” Levy said. “It was also a strange time because people were afraid of going into a booth, and some people had to record from home. It’s all about comfortability, and making sure that the actors felt safe in recording the lines during the height of COVID.”

Even before its debut, “Krapopolis” scored an early renewal for a second and third season at Fox, which Levy notes was a welcome surprise that “added a lot of fuel to [the team’s] gas tank.”

“It gave us a much-needed pressure release and allowed us to really dig in and feel like we can expand the world in ways we didn’t necessarily get to explore in a Season 1, because we we weren’t sure how much real estate we were going to have with the show,” Levy said. “Moving forward into the show, season to season, we go crazier and bigger and get more into that ‘Rick and Morty’ rhythm, where a lot of the concepts are a little more sci-fi and fantasy, and a little more grounded emotionally in whatever’s happening with the characters’ relationships with each other.”

For Levy and his team, the network’s commitment to the show enabled them to have “space to create and breathe in this world,” leading “Krapopolis” to “push the boundaries of what Fox typically allows or explores in their animated programming.”

While Levy jokes that the show has been in the works for so long that it felt like the team was only making it for themselves, he hopes that viewers feel seen through the unique characters — and that he might eventually see fans dressed as Tyrannis, Shlub, Stupendous, Deliria or Hippocampus at future Comic-Con conventions.

“My hope is that no matter who you are … there is a character in this show that you really connect to and feel like represents them in a really positive way,” Levy said, adding that the mythology embraced in the show results in a “broader range of types of people.” “The hope is that we can build a little bit of a community — for lack of a better word — around the show, and allow for people to meet and connect over shared love for something.”

“Krapopolis” premieres Sunday Sept. 24 on Fox.

Kelly Clarkson has a new collaborator — her daughter! On Friday, the 41-year-old singer released the deluxe edition of her album, chemistry, which includes “you don’t make me cry,” a song with her 9-year-old daughter, River Rose.

In the track, Kelly belts out lyrics that feel like the tune is something of a break-up song, as she sings, “I’d rather be alone than blue/ Know it ain’t easy but watch me walk the high road without you.”

“You don’t make me cry/ And I cry at everything/ You don’t make me feel/ And I feel more than most/ now that says something, doesn’t it?” Kelly croons, as he daughter provides backup vocals. “Feeling free since I found out you don’t have power/ So you searching for some/ Well, you can’t have mine/ you don’t make me cry.”

In a tweet earlier this month, Kelly revealed that her daughter “was 5yrs old when she was layin down tracks” for the new song.

It’s not the first time Kelly has teamed up with her kids, River and 7-year-old Remington, both of whom she shares with her ex, Brandon Blackstock. Back in 2019, River starred in her mom’s music video for “Broken & Beautiful.”

More recently, both of the Blackstock tots joined their mom onstage for a performance of “Heartbeat Song” during her Las Vegas residency.

Kelly initially released chemistry in June. She followed that up by dropping a new song, “roses,” earlier this month.

In addition to “roses” and “you don’t make me cry,” chemistry‘s deluxe edition includes new songs “i won’t give ip,” “did you know,” and “goodbye.” It also has a live version and a remix of “mine,” as well as a remix of “favorite kind of high.”

Over 870 names are engraved in the honour wall in Ottawa; names of officers who have lost their lives on duty in Canada. 65 of those officers have died while on duty in Saskatchewan.

The front steps of the Regina legislative building became a place of solace and remembrance on Sept. 24, for fallen police and peace officers in Saskatchewan and across Canada.

This memorial comes only a days after the death of an RCMP officer in British Columbia.

Over 870 names are engraved in the honour wall in Ottawa, names of officers who have lost their lives on duty in Canada. 65 have died while on duty in Saskatchewan.

RCMP, Regina police and peace officers, veterans, ministers, the families of the fallen officers, and other locals came together for the annual memorial service in their honour.

“When police officers and peace officers get up in the morning or in the evening and go to work, they expect to come home. The reality is that on occasion that doesn’t happen,” said retired staff sergeant Grab Obst, during his address at the memorial.

The names of all 65 of Saskatchewan’s fallen officers read out loud, which Obst said is a crucial part of the ceremony.

“To ensure that we don’t forget. That we don’t forget that those 65 people laid down their lives protecting their community,” he said.

Former minister of policing, Christine Tell was also in attendance.

“It’s really important for our community to recognize the dedication and service of peace and police officers in the province of Saskatchewan and throughout Canada,” she said.

The memorial also consisted of ceremonial canon salutes, songs of remembrance from Campbell Collegiate’s choir and bag pipes, as well as wreath laying.

The Golden Globes has expelled three voters. Howaida Hamdy, Munawar Hosain and Aniko Navai were allegedly ousted for violating the organization’s code of conduct, according to media reports.

Hamdy, an Egyptian journalist, was under investigation for writing on social media that “Hollywood is the Zionists’ stronghold” and allegedly publishing other anti-Israel and anti-Semitic comments in her work, TheWrap previously reported.

Hosain was initially disciplined by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the now-disbanded organization that ran the Globes until recently, when he was found to have scalped his tickets to the 2017 ceremony for $39,000. At the time, TheWrap reported exclusively, he was banned from receiving tickets for two years. (Hosain claimed that he had given the tickets to a friend,

Hamdy, Hosain and Navai have been removed from the “Voters Biographies” page on the Golden Globes website. That page, which in the past had contained biographies of the approximately 100 members of the HFPA, now lists 289 journalists, some of whom were HFPA members but most of whom were not.

Earlier this year, the HFPA was dissolved when Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries acquired the Globes from the HFPA, which had run the awards show for decades. The show had been reeling for

Existing members of the embattled organization were given the opportunity to remain as paid voters for the Globes, and Hamdy, Hosain and Navai continued to be listed on the website as voters, while the Globes recruited additional international journalists to make their roster of voters more diverse and more credible.

For James Kane, the struggle of trying to make a living as an actor was the reason why he became a therapist.

As a member of SAG-AFTRA for over 15 years, Kane knew what it was like to never know whether or not he’d get enough work for the year to qualify for the guild’s health plan. Living through the 2007 WGA strike allowed him to witness firsthand the anxiety of entertainment workers who don’t know when they’re going to have jobs again.

“I made enough to qualify every once in a while, but it was always a roll of the dice,” Kane said. “That experience made me sensitive to the needs of actors and entertainment workers whose work is now being maligned. I decided to go into mental health for all the reasons that this strike is happening right now.”

With the blessing of his employers, Kane began a low-cost therapy group where members of the WGA, SAG-AFTRA and other unions can discuss the anxiety and other mental and emotional problems they have gone through not just during this strike-filled summer, but long before writers and actors took to the picket lines.

His group is one of many mental health services being offered by various grassroots and institutional organizations, and there are thousands looking for help.

The cost of an individual session, which can be $175-200, is shared among the group at $20 each,” Kane said. “It’s a model we needed to make access more equitable, because there are members who were getting therapy before the strike but discontinued it because they thought they couldn’t afford it anymore, and there are others who don’t have healthcare or could never afford therapy at all.”

I decided to go into mental health for all the reasons that this strike is happening right now.”

James Kane, SAG-AFTRA member and therapist

Even after four months, union members on the picket lines have told TheWrap that they are just as motivated on day 141 as they were on day 1. The chants of “one day longer, one day stronger” have echoed among WGA and SAG-AFTRA members throughout the summer, and there’s high confidence that they can reach a fair deal.

But that doesn’t mean that the strike hasn’t taken a financial and emotional toll on thousands of union members, whether they are on strike or just out of work. Organizations like the Entertainment Community Fund and the Motion Picture and Television Fund have reported overwhelming calls for financial aid requests, and more than 3,000 crew members enrolled in the Motion Picture Industry Retirement Plan have taken hardship withdrawals to make ends meet.

That fear of not being able to make ends meet if the strike doesn’t end soon is the most common source of anxiety, but Kane says that’s not the only one. There’s also the fear that after all this time, the strike might be a sign that showbiz isn’t one’s true calling, or that it is but they won’t have the financial means to pursue their dreams anymore.

“I saw this both in 2007 and now: the feeling that after putting all this time, money, and energy into following a career in Hollywood, you’re running out of one or all of those things. That’s a terrifying feeling, and people need help processing it,” he said.

For many members of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the picket lines that began as an effort to halt struck productions became a source of emotional strength through the new friendships formed with fellow union members and the daily routine of marching in front of the studio gates.

“We have to acknowledge that it’s hard being out on the picket lines every day, and we do everything we can to make it easier for people,” said Melissa Blake, a lot coordinator for WGA’s picket lines in front of the NBCUniversal lot. “We have themed days and food and do everything we can to make this bearable, but yeah, I’d like to be a writer rather than an event planner.”

Blake’s sister and fellow guild member, Joy, appreciates the effort.

“I never wake up in the morning excited to do this. I wake up full of rage and I’m so angry every day. But then I come to these picket lines and I meet someone new and I walk away feeling glad that I took the time to picket today,” she said.

But being out of work can bring with it some specific mental illnesses that picket line solidarity can’t help. James Kane’s wife, Alyson Roux, is a nutritionist who specializes in assisting those with eating disorders, and she says that cases have risen during the strike.

“There are people who grew up in households where the family was struggling with food insecurity, and now with the strike raising the risk of falling back into that insecurity, unhealthy eating habits can develop,” Roux said. “This is compounded by the fact that many entertainment workers haven’t fully financially recovered from the pandemic, and having wave after wave of insecurity can harm the body’s ability to tolerate high stress situations.”

To help with that stress and the factors that cause it, the Entertainment Community Fund launched a series of weekly online workshops, including 30-minute mindful meditation sessions and guidance on financial support, job searching and self-care techniques to help entertainment workers get through the strike.

Another popular session is an hour-long, three-part workshop called “Anxiety Toolbox,” which teaches participants how to understand the symptoms of anxiety and different mental care techniques to handle it. For those in need of individual care, ECF offers short-term supportive care and case workers who can help connect clients to medical and psychiatric care.

The demand for all of these services has only gotten higher as the strike has gone on. Tina Hookom, regional services director for ECF, says that her team started receiving an estimated 50-60 new calls for assistance every week starting with the third week of the WGA strike. That rate only increased once SAG-AFTRA went on strike on July 14.

But the resources in ECF’s network have increased as well, thanks largely to grassroots efforts.

“We have seen individuals and groups reach out to provide gathering spaces and establish affinity groups that we can direct members to,” Hookom said.

Liz Alper, a WGA board member and co-founder of Hollywood staffer solidarity network Pay Up Hollywood, says that there’s been a concerted effort by WGA and SAG-AFTRA’s rank-and-file to provide as many mental health resources as possible for anyone in Hollywood who needs it, with the hopes that the expanded network can find a wider range of people who need help.

“There’s a sense of comradery that can come with being in a writers room, and I think a lot of people needed that during the strike,” Alper said. “Some people get it through the picket lines, and others need a more structured environment where they can share their personal strike struggles with others who are in this situation.”

As a neurodivergent writer, Alper has organized her strike work in a way that supports her mental health. She’s largely eschewed picket lines with larger and louder crowds, instead getting involved in the grassroots pickets that were set up in the early weeks of the strike to shut down productions that continued shooting without writers.

Recently, she’s been involved in the picket lines that have formed outside the rehearsal spaces for “Dancing With the Stars,” which ABC planned to move forward on without the WGA writer it hires to work with the show’s hosts. She’s also been involved with affinity groups for neurodivergent writers to allow them to connect and support one another during the strike.

Whether it’s institutional aid from orgs like Entertainment Community Fund or individual efforts like James Kane’s therapy group, Alper feels that the mental health network created by and for Hollywood labor has been a major reason why the interunion solidarity that has defined this strike has held together for so long, providing the industry’s working class a space to express not only the anxiety they feel about this work stoppage, but also the anxiety many have felt about their field trending in a direction that is making it more difficult for them to earn a living.

“It’s worth remembering that even before this strike, there were a lot of people who want and need therapy but couldn’t because they’re getting part-time pay for full-time work. Therapy can be a luxury for the lowest paid in our industry,” Alper said.

It’s why Alper believes that the biggest aid Hollywood could give to so many workers struggling with mental health is a fair deal, one that can free writers from the stress she’s suffered for years having to stretch out the pay she got from the single writing job she could find each year, a job that only lasted 10-15 weeks because the show she was working on used a miniroom and did not keep her employed when production began.

“If we end the strike now without getting what we need, the anxiety we have going forward will be the anxiety that our trade as writers is dying,” she said. “When I was hustling as an assistant, I thought that once I became a staff writer I would be financially stable, yet here I am during this strike still wondering if I can stay financially sustainable as a staff writer, because I can’t keep going like this for another five years.”

The crowd at Houston’s NRG Stadium was fortunate enough to witness the greatness of not just one, but two certified Htown Hotties on Saturday night.

During the first of two Houston stops on her sold-out Renaissance tour, Beyoncé surprised the audience by inviting Megan Thee Stallion onstage with her in the artists’ shared hometown. The dynamic duo delivered a rare performance of their Grammy-winning “Savage” remix.

“Do we have any savage ladies and gentlemen in Houston tonight?” Beyoncé asked the crowd about halfway through the show, according to footage posted online.

“Please give it up for Houston’s own Megan Thee Stallion.”

Cue the shrieks and applause as Meg strutted onto the stage in a stylish camouflage number while Beyoncé looked down from her raised platform (literally) in admiration of her friend and colleague.

“Does she make you proud?” Beyoncé continued as the crowd cheered in response. “She makes me proud. I love you, girl.”

“I love you, Beyoncé!” Meg exclaimed.

The hip-hop sensation later shared an Instagram post showing off her Renaissance tour costume and reiterating her affection for Queen Bey.

“HOUSTON I LOVE YOUUU,” she captioned the post. “GOODNIGHT.”

Less than two years ago, Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion’s remix of the latter’s hit single, “Savage,” was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including record of the year. The catchy tune took home the prizes for rap song and rap/sung performance.

The collaboration was originally released as part of a charitable campaign providing aid to the people of Houston during the COVID-19 pandemic. Proceeds from the popular track were donated to relief efforts in the area.

“I’m literally crying … being from HOUSTON … this … means EVERYTHING to me !!!!” Megan Thee Stallion said on social media at the time. “SAVAGE REMIX FT THE QUEEN @BEYONCE OUT NOW!”

Beyoncé (and Meg, if concertgoers are lucky) is scheduled to return to NRG Stadium for an encore performance on Sunday night.

Nicolas Cage is back at it. He can do pretty much anything from playing himself to putting on fangs to transform into Dracula. Nic Cage is in so many movies that it almost feels like he is around us all the time. In fact, it wouldn’t be shocking if his face showed up in your dreams. It’s a little scary, but also I would like to experience it …unless Nic Cage is on some Freddy Krueger stuff. I’ll pass in that case. His stare and antics can cause a shiver to creep up your spine, after all. Entertainingly, Nicolas Cage appearing in people’s dreams (and maybe nightmares) is exactly what’s happening in the trailer for Dream Scenario.

Here’s the synopsis for Dream Scenario so the trailer makes sense:

Hapless family man Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams.  But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom, in this wickedly entertaining comedy from writer-director Kristoffer Borgli and producer Ari Aster.

This whole concept is quite interesting. Why is Paul in everyone’s dreams and nightmares? What makes him such a special person? Why is this happening at this particular point in his life? We all know that A24 is masterful at these types of stories, so the answers will likely surprise us. And who doesn’t love to see Nic Cage being very weird and funny? Cage is starring in whatever floats his boat nowadays, so we might as well go along for the Dream Scenario ride.

In addition to Nicolas Cage, Dream Scenario stars Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Dylan Gelula, and Dylan Baker. The film will hit select theaters on November 10 before getting a wider release on November 22.

Eagle-eyed visitors to Argentinian website have spotted something a little unexpected — a product page for new Galaxy Buds FE earbuds, along with images of a smartphone and Galaxy Tab S9 FE tablet. That’s because the company leaked its latest Fan Edition devices, as noted by SamMobile. One of the smartphone images includes the date October 4 on the device, which could be a nod toward the announcement or a release date.

The company hasn’t let slip any specs for the phone and tablet as yet. However, the Galaxy S23 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE were reportedly mentioned by name on the page. This is about as close as Samsung can get to a formal announcement without a press release or an Unpacked.

The product page (which Samsung has taken down) did about the Galaxy Buds FE, Samsung’s first Fan Edition earbuds. They’re slated to have a single 12mm driver, three microphones in each earbud to bolster the active noise cancellation function and a three-way speaker.

Samsung’s Fan Edition devices have proven popular over the years. They tend to pack in solid features for a more reasonable price than the company’s flagship models. It’s safe to imagine that quite a few people will be looking forward to snapping up this year’s FE devices.

While the leak appears to have been an error, we can’t count out the possibility that Samsung deliberately showed off the latest FE devices before an official announcement. Major hardware companies are all jostling for your attention around this time of year. Just before Apple revealed the iPhone 15 lineup last week, Google dropped some teasers for its and devices — Google’s Pixel event isn’t until October. So, Samsung may have been looking for headlines with a purposeful leak here (in which case, it evidently worked).

The more likely scenario is that it’s another unintentional slip up for the company. It’s probably not quite as bad or as damaging as this week’s , but you’d think Samsung would know better by now in any case.

The well has run dry for another asymmetrical horror hit, as Saber Interactive has announced that EVIL DEAD: THE GAME will receive no more content. This comes just months after word broke that Gun Media’s Friday the 13th: The Game would also be shutting down at the end of the year.

Released last year for previous and current-gen consoles (sans Nintendo Switch, which has seen its planned port killed off as part of this announcement), EVIL DEAD: THE GAME received generally positive reviews. What makes this all the more surprising is a relatively short life span, especially when compared to Friday the 13th: The Game, which, even after having its legs cut off due to the franchise’s legal battles, endured for nearly six years. DLC had been steady since the game’s release, interjecting characters and skins from Army of Darkness, 2013’s Evil Dead and Ash vs. Evil Dead. A Game of the Year compilation and Steam port also materialized back in April. The recently released Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the forthcoming Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game should help fill the gaping wound left by the exit of two of Dead by Daylight’s most notable titles.

While Saber Interactive seems committed to keeping servers up and running for the foreseeable future and patching issues as they arise, the lack of new maps, characters and other assets certainly diminishes the replayability of a multiplayer-forward title, begging the question: If a developer puts forth the effort of securing the rights to a particular franchise, why not release a proper, single player experience?

Every time Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle, and Rider Strong’s Pod Meets World podcast—in which the trio reminisce about their experiences filming the classic ABC sitcom Boy Meets World—crosses over into the realm of pop culture news, it’s because of some revelation about a negative experience or a regret from their time on the show. Fishel has talked about series creator Michael Jacobs threatening to fire her in front of the whole cast and crew when she was only 12, there was the time Trina McGee (who played Angela) confronted her former co-stars about why she didn’t appear in the series finale, and Strong brought up how his concerns were ignored when he questioned why an episode in which Cory and Topanga considered having sex didn’t mention condoms or birth control at all.

In fact, speaking with People recently, Fishel said that one of her concerns about doing the podcast in the first place was that it would “ruin the show” for fans if they found out that the stuff happening behind the scenes wasn’t quite as cheery as everything onscreen. “We don’t want our criticisms or our critiques or our experiences to in any way change what your opinion of the show is,” she told People, “They’re just our honest opinions, and we can’t do it if we’re not going to be honest.”

Luckily, her and her podcast cohosts came to a conclusion that put those fears to rest: Boy Meets World is “a really good show.” Fishel said that’s what she realized while going through it, and she now sees it as a “great experience” they all had. Strong also noted that they conceived of the podcast as a “journey,” rather than just sitting around and “talking about how great [Boys Meets World] is,” but they “all agree” that “it is actually great.” So that’s nice.

The company behind the Golden Globes has expelled three voters for allegedly violating its code of conduct.

The Globes, which is owned by Dick Clark Productions, have removed Howaida Hamdy, Munawar Hosain and Aniko Navai from the group’s membership ranks following complaints about and investigations into their behavior, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Hamdy, an Egyptian journalist and critic, became the subject of an internal investigation last month after she allegedly tweeted antisemitic messages in Arabic and also included similar sentiments in her reviews. The probe was launched after CAMERA, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis, issued a report accusing Hamdy of the “glorification of terrorism” and “extremism.”

Hamdy was one of 21 journalists added to the organization’s voting body in 2021 in an effort to increase diversity among its membership after a Los Angeles Times exposé revealed that it counted zero Black people among its then 87 members.

Bangladeshi-born Hosain joined the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 1993, while Hungarian-born Navai became a member in 1999.

Hamdy, Hosain and Navai had all transitioned to Golden Globe employees after Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge acquired all of the Golden Globes’ assets, rights and properties from the HFPA and turned the venture into a for-profit enterprise. (The Hollywood Reporter is owned by PME Holdings, LLC, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge.)

As of Sunday, the official bio pages for all three members had been removed from the Golden Globes official website.

According to archived pages online, Hamdy began her journalism career in 1988, most recently serving as deputy editor-in-chief for Egyptian news publication Al-Akhbar. She also is a contributor to the London-based newspaper Al-Arab and the online media site Raseef 22. She relocated to Los Angeles in 2020.

Navai, also based in Los Angeles, began her career as a reporter/presenter for Radio Hungary. She also held jobs at ad agency BBDO and Voice of America before moving to L.A. to cover the entertainment industry. She also co-founded a PR agency in Budapest and headed a talent agency before moving back to L.A.

Hosain, also based in L.A., relocated to the U.S. in 1990, starting his journalism career working for the Bangladeshi entertainment publication Ananda Bichitra while also writing for the weekly magazine Weekly Bichitra. He also is a photographer, with his photos appearing in the likes of InStyle, People, Los Angeles Magazine, US Weekly and In Touch.

The Golden Globes Awards ceremony is set for Jan. 10, 2024. There is no broadcast partner attached as of yet.

Deadline was the first to report the news of the three expelled members.

In what seems like the most definitive proof yet that you shouldn’t spend untold millions of dollars making a movie exclusively for the people who remember that there was an Expendables 3 (it came out in 2014 and Kelsey Grammer was in it???), Expend4bles—pronounced ecks-pen-d-for-bulls—opened to just $8.3 million. As we noted earlier this weekend, that wasn’t enough to beat The Nun II, which actually came out just ahead of Expend4bles by $100,000 in its third week in U.S. theaters. The horror sequel spin-off has a nice $69 million total.

Finishing the top five in the U.S. this weekend are A Haunting In Venice, which doesn’t seem to have the surprising box office oomph of its predecessors in that series (it only has $25 million in its second week), The Equalizer 3 (quietly pulling in $80 million in four weeks), and—holy shit—Barbie (still making money after 10 weeks in theaters).

In the bottom half of the top 10 we have My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, horror newcomer It Lives Inside, Dumb Money (which jumped up a thousand percent from its debut at number 19 thanks to a bigger rollout, but that only amounts to $2.5 million in week two), Blue Beetle, and Barbie’s friend Oppenheimer. All told, this was indeed the worst box office weekend of the year, and you have to go way back to February 12 to see anything remotely close to this. Magic Mike’s Last Dance was the top movie, but Avatar: The Way Of Water in its ninth week and the 25th-anniversary rerelease of Titanic were pretty close to it.

Anyway, this probably means that the all-female ExpendaBelles movie is never gonna happen, huh? Bummer. Here’s the top 10 again as a list, from Box Office Mojo.

  1. The Nun II
  2. Expend4bles
  3. A Haunting In Venice
  4. The Equalizer 3
  5. Barbie

Viewers who tuned in to watch repeats of “Yellowstone” on CBS Sunday night got something they might not have expected — two commercials telling them to watch the show somewhere else.

CBS sold national ad time during the program to rival NBCUniversal, which ran a spot highlighting the availability of the Western-themed drama series on its Peacock streaming hub. “Peacock has all episodes of ‘Yellowstone,’” the commercial says via graphics that appear over scenes from the program. “Stream every season now.” Peacock has streaming rights to the program, even though it’s produced by CBS parent Paramount Global, which first airs the series on its TV networks. “This is a declaration of war,” says one “Yellowstone” character at the end of the spot.

The advertising arrangement shows just how much the advent of streaming has changed relationships between fierce rivals like NBC and CBS. Paramount Global generates revenue from the sale of “Yellowstone” rights to Peacock, and from the Peacock commercial — even if NBC is trying to dip into CBS’ pool of viewers to bring new audiences to the show.

The “Yellowstone” episodes wouldn’t be on CBS under regular circumstances. The network is running them as a sort of stopgap measure amid months-long labor strikes by Hollywood’s writers’ and actors’ unions. Even so, the repeats seem to be a hit. A two-hour block of “Yellowstone” lured more than six million viewers to the network in their debut last week. A live audience of that size is tough for any advertiser to ignore.

Still, the idea of letting a rival come in to woo away viewers is a bit of a risk — a move tantamount to a homeowner letting termites come into a house and gnaw at its innards. Even so, TV networks in recent years have been happy to sell valuable ad time to new competitors who use the commercial breaks to tell viewers, essentially, to use their remotes to watch something interesting on one of their services. To do so, of course, the couch potatoes must stop watching regular TV.

The spate of TV ads from new-tech players such as Amazon, Netflix, Google and Hulu has expanded counter to past TV-industry policy. For decades, TV networks kept rivals off national ad breaks in the belief that viewers who saw such promotions would change the channel and take their viewership with them. As HBO made a name for itself with landmark series like “The Sopranos,” “Sex in the City” and “True Blood,” it often focused its marketing on eye-popping print advertising and clever Web marketing, because many TV networks barred the doors to ads for the shows. In the past, TV networks would not even run ads featuring actors who appeared in programs broadcast on rivals. A case in point: In 1997, General Motors’ Cadillac ran an ad featuring actor Dennis Franz as a cop handing out a ticket. At the time, he starred as a police detective on ABC’s “NYPD Blue.” CBS and NBC vetoed the spot.

In a different era, companies that tried such stuff had to do it In under-the-radar fashion. In 2004, Time Warner for several weeks ran ads for off-network repeats of the CBS program “Without A Trace” during local time in broadcasts of “E.R.” Why? Because CBS ran “Without A Trace” in the same time slot. “If you’ve been watching ‘E.R.’ on Thursday nights,” says a narrator, “you’ve missed the drama critics say is…Gripping. Stylish. Addictive.” NBC wasn’t immediately aware of the ploy because the spots were sold by individual station affiliates, not by the network itself.

Even today, the policy continues to affect who can advertise where. Despite increasingly loose rules on network TV, many streamers won’t accept rivals’ commercials. Netflix, Max and Disney’s Hulu and Disney+ do not take ads that tout rival streaming services or the shows that run on them, according to executives familiar with the policies. And Paramount+, part of Paramount Global, tends to accept ads only from streaming competitors with whom the company might already do business, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Running Peacock’s “Yellowstone” spots might augment Paramount’s revenue. If more people watch the series on the NBC property, executives there might want to extend their rights to the program. And since the CBS episodes are repeats, Paramount executives may have bet the show’s core audience has already watched them — and may be out there streaming something else.

Negotiators for the WGA and Hollywood’s major studios and streamers gathered Sunday afternoon around 4 p.m. PT for more talks about the final terms of a three-year contract that has taken shape over the past week, raising hopes of ending the nearly five-month writers strike.

Some representatives for the Writers Guild of America and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers were believed to be meeting face to face despite the start of the Yom Kippur holiday on Sunday evening. The sides were still in discussion as of about 5:30 p.m. PT.

Representatives for the WGA and AMPTP did not return requests for comment on Sunday.

The AMPTP on Saturday evening presented the guild with a best and final offer, a contract designation meant to signal that the studios have closed the door on further negotiations on the most significant issues. On Sunday, sources said there was discussion between the sides of final details such as what type of work, if any, WGA members would do during the interim period while the guild holds its ratification vote on the contract.

The Creative Coalition’s annual Humanitarian Awards takes place the week of the Primetime Emmys — but even though the big show was pushed to January, the benefit luncheon still took place on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the La Peer Hotel rooftop in West Hollywood, attracting a wide range of honorees and presenters.

The Humanitarian Awards recognizes talent who donate their time, resources and their celebrity to promote worthy social causes. This year, honors went to Jason Alexander, Pauline Chalamet, Billy Eichner, Wendie Malick, Arian Moayed and Lena Waithe, as well as Josefina López, who was saluted with the Your Voice Carries Weight award. Presenters included Alyssa Milano, Cazzie David, Lawrence O’Donnell, Gloria Calderón Kellet, Samantha Hanratty, Debbie Levin, Bradley Whitford and Darnell Moore.

Variety co-editor-in-chief Cynthia Littleton hosted the luncheon, which opened with remarks from The Creative Coalition CEO Robin Bronk; both cited the org’s continued fight for arts funding and education.

In her acceptance speech, “Real Women Have Curves” writer López discussed the limited opportunities for Latino voices — recalling the body shaming and stereotypical portrayals of Latinos she has encountered in Hollywood over the years. Malick applauded female-led organizations at the forefront of supporting positive change, while Eichner pushed for more arts spending in schools and Moayed and Alexander recalled how the arts changed their lives. Alexander also gave a rallying cry of support to Hollywood actors and writers on the picket line, amid the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as well as the artisans who make up each production.

“It is the working people,” Alexander said. “Right now, as our colleagues are out there in front of every studio and network in this town fighting, they are not only fighting for what is existentially important to them, but they are also fighting for every grip and gaffer, every electrician, every office worker. We are all in this together.”

Kelly Clarkson made someone’s day this weekend — even if she had no idea who Clarkson was at first. The “My Life Would Suck Without You” singer shared on TikTok that she was heading toward soundcheck in Las Vegas when she paused to tip “this incredible woman killing some Tina Turner.” The woman didn’t recognize her, but asked Clarkson to sing, so she happily obliged.

“And then it hit her, and it made my day!” Clarkson added. “She gives the best hugs and sings her tail off! See ya tonight Vegas ❤️ #iHeartFestival2023.”

With both of their joy, watch the two making each other’s day:

@kellyclarkson

I was on my way to soundcheck for @iHeartRadio tonight in Vegas and was tipping this incredible woman killing some Tina Turner and then she asked me to sing and had no clue who I was, and then it hit her, and it made my day! She gives the best hugs and sings her tail off! See ya tonight Vegas ❤️ #iHeartFestival2023

In the 30-second clip, Clarkson is captured singing Turner’s iconic hit “What’s Love Go To Do With It?” when the Vegas singer suddenly screams and realizes who is singing. The woman points at Clarkson and the pair embrace, twice.

Clarkson has seemed especially fond of surprising fans and unsuspecting strangers before. In June she showed up at a karaoke event before the release of her record “Chemistry” and joined fans who were singing her songs before turning up to perform at subway stations in the days that followed. In September 2022, she sang her hit “Since U Been Gone” alongside a self-described “superfan” outside the Today show.

Clarkson recently released the deluxe version of her “Chemistry” album, featuring her daughter River Rose singing with her on a previously unreleased song. The album is themed around her breakup with her now ex-husband.

Heralding from the French-Canadian directing trio RKSS, comprising Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell and François Simard, the film follows a group of hot-headed Gen Z activists who find themselves brutally hunted after they become trapped in a furniture superstore during an act of environmental protest gone wrong.

Pic is written by Alberto Marini, based on an original idea by Martin Soudan, and presented by Borsalino Productions and Studiocanal. The film will next screen at Spain’s Sitges Film Festival as part of the Oficial Fantàstic Competition.

Starring are Benny O.Arthur (Sky and Canal + Django series), Jacqueline Moré (The Anarchists’s Dream), Charlotte Stoiber (Downfall), Kyle Scudder (Netflix’s upcoming In Love All Over Again), and newcomers Alessia Yoko Fontana and Tom Gould along with Irish actors Turlough Convery (Black Mirror) and Aidan O’Hare (My Sailor, My Love).

Producers are Gaël Nouaille and Laurent Baudens, executive producers are Adrià Monés, Gaël Nouaille, and Maud Petit, and pic is co-produced by Yann Degay and Barnaby Wass. Studiocanal handles sales on the project which was shot in Gran Canaria.

After making their debuts with 2015 Sundance feature Turbo Kid (Winner of SXSW’s 2015 Midnighters Audience Award), RKSS made their sophomore feature with Summer of 84 (Sundance 2018) and more recently, made the comic book adaptation We Are Zombies, which premiered at the 2023 Fantasia International Film Festival, where it took the Audience Award Gold for Best Québec Feature, and also screens at Fantastic Fest.

“As soon as we read the script, the core concept and the timely subject were so compelling to us, that we immediately could visualize the film and we knew we had to direct it and bring our own signature into the project,” said RKSS of Wake Up. “A slasher in a closed furniture store and warehouse makes an exciting playground for sure. We’re so excited to world premiere this movie at Fantastic Fest. It’s going to be a first for us, and we cannot wait to meet with the crowd and team!”

AR Rahman’s Chennai concert was held on September 10.

AR Rahman’s Chennai concert grabbed everyone’s attention after a case was filed against the organisers for allegedly overselling tickets which lead to a chaotic situation at the venue.

Days after AR Rahman’s Chennai concert ruled headlines for the alleged mismanagement, the music maestro took to his Instagram handle on Sunday and dropped a video of the highlights from the concert. “Chennai concert highlights!” he wrote in the caption but disabled comments.

The video shows AR Rahman singing on the stage as the audience cheers for him. Among other tracks, he also sings tracks from Mani Ratnam’s movie Roja. Rahman is also seen playing piano and tanpura on the stage. The video also shares glimpses of the other singers who joined Rahman on stage. Watch the video here:

AR Rahman’s Chennai concert was held on September 10. However, it grabbed everyone’s attention after a case was filed against the organisers for allegedly overselling tickets which led to a chaotic situation at the venue – almost like a stampede. It was reported that during the chaotic situation at the concert, a number of women were groped and harassed.

“Due to chaos at the venue, many complained about the concert tickets being oversold. Following this, the Tambaram City Police took up the investigation and registered cases under IPC section 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated) against Hemanth Raja, CEO of ACTC Events, and two others,” a senior police had said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Later, the CEO of the ACTC Events issued an official statement apologising for the mishandling of the event. “Our goal was to guarantee an unforgettable night of Rahman sir’s songs for his fans. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, many couldn’t access the venue. We accept full responsibility for this and are accountable,” he said.

The organisers further urged everyone not to blame the singer for what happened at the concert and added, “He is not one to blame. It’s completely our mistake. Don’t spread negativity about him. He did his job one hundred per cent and the majority were enjoyed, but we failed. We take full responsibility.” The CEO also assured that the company would offer refunds to those who had purchased tickets but were unable to attend the event, urging them to reach out with complete details.

Xialing’s go-to weapon in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings holds a key connection to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

As one of Marvel Studios’ most-liked Phase 4 projects, Shang-Chi brought a lot to the MCU, including its first Asian lead.

Another of Marvel’s higher-profile Asian heroes, the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Wong made several appearances in Phase 4. Most notably in Doctor Strange 2, where he made use of a traditional Chinese weapon.

Wong’s Doctor Strange 2 Weapon Has Shang-Chi Ties

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, during the battle with Gargantos, Wong conjured a mystical rope dart. The rope dart is an ancient, long-used weapon of Chinese origin. It consists of a length of rope with a metal spike secured at the end.

This same form of weaponry was employed by Xu Xialing during the final battle in Ta Lo from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. As it turned out, the rope dart’s appearance in that film was used as a reference for Wong’s magical version in Multiverse of Madness.

In the book Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: The Art of the Movie, it’s explained by Graham Churchyard, the film’s costume designer, that he wanted to “move away” from the classic rope dart design:

“Wong’s rope dart is a martial arts weapon, a bit like a physical taser. It also turned up in Marvel Studios’ ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ which was shooting at the same time, but there it was more of a classic rope dart worn on the waist. I wanted to move away from that, and I had seen armored cuffs on trips to museums like the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford and the British Museum, where they have a section on near-Middle Eastern armor.”

Churchyard went into greater detail about Wong’s rope dart from the film, which was designed to “increase in size” when the user hurled it at its target.

“Some of the most lethal ancient weapons are so beautifully constructed they look like jewelry. And then you realize it’s a weapon designed to kill someone— that’s always quite bizarre. I wanted to scale it down onto a wrist, we had to get away from the sort of giant arrowhead that was in ‘Shang-Chi’ and used in real life. And so I just thought, ‘Well, there’s all this eldritch magic.’ So that’s why I sold them this idea that it would just increase in size as it flew off Wong’s arm.”

The full pages from the art book, which include concept paintings of the mystical rope dart used by Wong in Doctor Strange 2, can be seen below:

Marvel Studios Projects Influence Each Other

It’s actually a fairly frequent occurrence when an element in one MCU project shares a connection with an element from another.

Sometimes, something as minor as a special effect needs to be changed, (possibly mid-production) so that it won’t be perceived as too similar to something in another of Marvel’s movies or shows.

Such is the nature of filmmaking. However, it does seem like Marvel content in particular is subject to, at times, last-minute alterations to better suit the larger universe, as well as the brand itself.

So, while it didn’t seem like the decision was made late in the game, Wong using the same weapon as Xialing did in another film clearly needed to be addressed behind the scenes so that they wouldn’t be too similar.

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness can both be streamed on Disney+ and purchased wherever movies are sold.

Summary

  • The current DCEU is being rebooted with a new timeline and continuity, led by new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Many heroes and villains will be recast with new stories.
  • “Superman: Legacy” will be the first film of the new DCU, set to release in 2025. It won’t be a typical origin story and will feature a younger Superman navigating his Kryptonian heritage and human upbringing.
  • The DCU will start earlier on TV with the animated series “Creatures Commandos” in 2024.
  • Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle has been confirmed as the DCU’s first hero who can be integrated into the upcoming universe down the line.

The cinematic DC Universe is about to be rebooted on-screen, though the exact beginning of the new universe is a little complicated. Coming from new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, a whole collection of new projects was revealed at the beginning of 2023, each of them part of a new timeline and continuity where only some elements and characters from the existing DCEU are continuing on. As such, some of the franchise’s biggest heroes and villains will be changed and recast with all-new stories.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to be the final movie in the current DCEU, effectively closing the door on the universe that first began with 2013’s Man of Steel. While the DCEU has its fair share of incredible moments and strong movies, much of it was critically panned with poor reception including the universe’s overall execution. Now, Gunn has stepped in as DC’s new creative head, intending to largely wipe the slate clean with a full slate of projects all under a phase entitled “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters”. As such, this new DCU is set to begin very soon (though some elements have already debuted).

The First DC Universe Movie Is Superman: Legacy

First and foremost, James Gunn has repeatedly said that Superman: Legacy will be the DCU’s first film set to release in 2025, effectively launching the greater universe by beginning with one of DC’s biggest cornerstone characters. Likewise, Gunn has confirmed that Legacy won’t be a typical origin story for Kal-El/Clark Kent, nor will it be an origin for the universe at large. This new Superman will be operating in a world that’s already quite familiar with superpowered beings.

In terms of plot, not much is known about Superman: Legacy other than the idea that Superman will be somewhat younger and looking to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing raised in Kansas. Likewise, David Corenswet is set to play Clark Kent/Superman while Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane whom Kal-El will already be familiar with. Furthermore, Nathan Fillion has been cast as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan will be playing Metamorpho, confirming the idea of heroes already being established in this new DCU.

James Gunn’s DC Universe Will Start Earlier On TV

Creature Commandos in James Gunn's new DC Universe

While Superman: Legacy is set to be the new DCU’s first movie in 2025, the DCU will begin even sooner than that in 2024 with the upcoming Creatures Commandos show. Confirmed by Gunn to be the first DCU show on Max, the animated series will exist in the same continuity as DC’s upcoming live-action projects, something that wasn’t the case in the DCEU (and only featured minimally in the MCU). Gunn has also shared his hopes that even new DC videogames will exist in the same shared continuity as well.

Set in the modern era, Creatures Commandos will follow a black ops team comprised of monsters under the watchful eye of Task Force X’s Amanda Waller (Viola Davis is set to reprise her DCEU role as Waller). The team itself will feature Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot & Weasel, and Steve Agee as John Economos. Maria Bakalova is also set to play Princess Ilana Rostovic. Likewise, each of these initial voice actors could end up playing their characters in live-action in future projects.

The DC Universe’s First Character Debuted In 2023

Blue Beetle DCU Shows and Movie Set Up Image

Creature Commandos isn’t happening until 2024 as the first DCU show and Superman: Legacy isn’t coming to theaters until 2025 as the first movie. However, James Gunn has confirmed that the first DCU hero has already been introduced in 2023 with Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle. Having released in theaters in August 2023, Blue Beetle introduced audiences to Jaime and his family who are seen grappling with Reyes’ inadvertent superhero status after a sentient alien battle suit chose to bond with him.

Having very little connection to the rest of the DCEU, Blue Beetle could easily be brought over to the new DCU given the character’s popularity and the new movie’s positive reception. Jaime’s inclusion is also perfect as the new DCU is meant to already have established heroes. Likewise, it’s possible Jason Momoa’s Aquaman may continue on into the new DCU given the similarly isolated nature of the Aquaman movies. The same can be said for the handful of characters connected to the DCEU’s Suicide Squad who are continuing into the new DCU such as Viola Davis’ Waller and John Cena’s Peacemaker (and even Sean Gunn’s Weasel).

Summary The current DCEU is

Eager to check out V’s new abilities in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty? Update 2.0 has completely revamped several mechanics, including how you maximize your character’s build. Our guide discusses Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty’s best perks and skills for each attribute, as well as how you can acquire more points that can be allocated.

What are the best perks in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty?

Before we talk about the best perks in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, we should first take note of three important facets: attribute points, perk points, and relic points. Those who’ve played the game prior to Update 2.0 might recall the original skill tree, which has since been revamped. Still, certain core mechanics should feel familiar.

  • Attribute points – Attribute points are gained per level, and can be used to increase the five core stats: Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence, and Cool.
  • Perk points – Perk points are distributed to acquire new active and passive skills from each attribute tree. Points are also obtained when you level up. Moreover, additional points are earned whenever you reach rank 15 and 35 in your skill progression bracket (i.e. Headhunter, Netrunner, Shinobi, Solo, and Engineer). While we won’t discuss this mechanic in detail here, just know that these increase depending on your actions as you play the game. For instance, Engineer rank-ups occur when you use smart weapons or tech weapons, whereas Netrunner rank-ups happen if you utilize quickhacks or complete terminal hacking minigames.
  • Relic points – Relic points are a completely new resource only available to those who are playing the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion.
The Skill Progression page shows how much you’ve ranked up each individual skill.

How do attributes and perks work?

All attributes have a base level of three points, which allows you to allocate perk points for low-tier skills. You’ll need to add more points to unlock higher brackets. The maximum level is 20, which lets you select the top-tier or legend perks. You may reset your attribute points once.

When choosing perks, bear in mind that there are numerous options, but points are limited (and you still need to level up to gain more). As such, it all comes down to your preferred playstyle and iconic weapons. Also, each attribute has at least one perk that affects vehicular combat. The good news is that you can freely refund your perk points whenever you see fit, so try to mix and match accordingly.

Use quickhacks to cause debilitating effects.
Use quickhacks to cause debilitating effects.

Best Body perks

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty’s best perks for the Body attribute primarily rely on close-range combat (i.e. blunt weapons and shotguns), heavy weapons (i.e. light machine guns and heavy machine guns), and the Adrenaline Rush ability. In our case, we didn’t focus too much on blunt weapons, but we did love blasting foes with the Ba Xing Chong shotgun.

  • Rookie: Painkiller, Comeback Kid, Dorph-Head, Speed Junkie, and Army of One – All of these options are viable since they boost mitigation and health regeneration.
  • Rookie (Vehicle): Fury Road – This is, perhaps, the best perk in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty in terms of vehicular combat. It decreases the damage taken by your vehicle, and increases the damage that you deal to others while you’re driving.
  • Pro: Die Die Die and Like a Feather – These are mostly to offset stamina and movement penalties when using shotguns and machine guns.
  • Phenom: Spontaneous Obliteration, Dread, Rush of Blood, Adrenaline Rush, Juggernaut, Calm Mind, and Bloodlust – The Adrenaline Rush-related perks help mitigate damage taken, while you get into the thick of the fray. Those on the left side, meanwhile, are for your shotguns and heavy machine guns.
  • Legend: Pain to Gain – The perk speeds up the recharge rate of health items while Adrenaline Charge is active.
Body perks beef up your offense and defense for close-quarters combat.
Body perks beef up your offense and defense for close-quarters combat.

Best Reflexes perks

The Reflexes attribute is for those who also want to get up close and personal with enemies, similar to the Body attribute. The difference here is that you’ll rely more on mobility (i.e. Dash and Air Dash), as well as blade weapons, such as the Black Unicorn katana.

  • Rookie: Slippery, Muscle Memory, and Multitasker – These make you harder to hit while dashing and dodging, while also allowing you to shoot and reload. Keep in mind that these aren’t relegated to a specific weapon, which means you can sprint and slide toward an enemy for a quick shotgun blast or whatever else you wish.
  • Pro: Dash, Can’t Touch This, Mad Dash, Lead and Steel, Bullet Deflect, Bullet Time, Seeing Double, and Flash & Thunderclap – The pro-tier skills bolster your movement speed thanks to increased mitigation and distance when dashing. Likewise, you’ll now be able to deflect bullets when holding a sword.
  • Phenom: Air Dash, Aerial Acrobat, Aerodynamic, Finisher: Bladerunner, Going the Distance, and Flash of Steel – If the previous options weren’t enough, then get ready to dash while in mid-air. You’ll also gain a finisher for your blade weapons.
  • Legend: Tailwind and Slaughterhouse – The former ensures that you no longer need to worry about stamina when double jumping or air dashing. The latter, meanwhile, causes the bleeding status effect, which makes enemies more susceptible to insta-kill finishers.
Reflexes perks have you moving in for the kill, albeit speedier thanks to acrobatic moves.
Reflexes perks have you moving in for the kill, albeit speedier thanks to acrobatic moves.

Best Technical Ability perks

The best perks in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty aren’t just for instant-use abilities. Some offer passive boosts when it comes to item recharge rate and cyberware. That’s where the Technical Ability skills come in. It’s worth noting that the cyberware feature has been reworked in the 2.0 update–you’ve got an assortment of new implants, and your armor value is dependent on the implants that are equipped.

  • Rookie: Glutton For War and Gearhead (Vehicle) – Glutton For War is selected mostly for higher-tier perks. Gearhead, meanwhile, is to boost the damage of vehicle-mounted turrets and rockets.
  • Pro: Health Freak, Coming In Hot, Demolitions Surplus, All Things Cyber, Renaissance Punk, and Driver Update – Those on the left side are there to give you increased item recharge rate and extra health injectors or grenades. The ones in the middle provide buffs and modifiers for cyberware implants.
  • Phenom: License to Chrome, Cyborg, Ambidextrous, Built Different, Bolt, Lightning Storm, and Shock Value – The License to Chrome-related perks unlock new cyberware slots, as well as additional armor stats. Those that are Bolt-related only affect tech weapons, allowing you to fire a charged shot. Still, if you want to save up on points, just focus on the cyberware perks for now.
  • Legend: Edgerunner and Chain Lightning – The former has even more powerful buffs for those who love using cyberware implants, whereas the latter triggers an electrical arc after shooting a Bolt.
Technical Ability perks bolster your cyberware usage.
Technical Ability perks bolster your cyberware usage.

Best Intelligence perks

The Intelligence perks in the game are those that focus more on quickhacks. These are skills that can cause debuffs or damage to enemies, while also creating distractions and explosions when used on machinery and vehicles. In some ways, the options here complement other playstyles, whether you prefer to run-and-gun or pick off opponents from afar.

  • Rookie: Carhacker (Vehicle) – Carhacker is probably the most important perk here since it lets you control vehicles, set off alarms, or blow them up. You do need to equip certain quickhacks via your cyberdeck to make certain options available.
  • Rookie: Optimization, Encryption, and Subordination – These three will help you recover RAM faster when using quickhacks, while also affecting their duration and enemy detection.
  • Hacking-related: Eye in the Sky up to Queue Mastery – From there, we focus on perks that further increase our maximum RAM and quickhack queue slots. You can also consider grabbing options like Data Recycler, Explosion Hazard, and Queue Prioritization. The idea is to use quickhacks like Sonic Shock, Overheat, Memory Wipe, and Contagion to cause chaos when facing hostile groups, before moving in to finish them off, either with shotguns/machine guns (Body perks), blade weapons (Reflexes perks), or sniper rifles (Cool perks).
Intelligence perks help improve your RAM recharge rate and quickhack utility.
Intelligence perks help improve your RAM recharge rate and quickhack utility.

Best Cool perks

The Cool perks are for players who want to hang back when landing a well-placed headshot, or those who want a stealthy approach with silenced weapons. Most perks here affect pistols, revolvers, precision rifles, and sniper rifles.

  • Rookie: Feline Footwork, Small Target, Blind Spot, Killer Instinct, and Quick Getaway – These picks help you sneak around while avoiding detection.
  • Pro: Focus, No Sweat, Rinse & Reload, Head to Head, and Deep Breath – Focus improves accuracy if you aim with full stamina. The last perk, Deep Breath, also slows down time.
  • Phenom: Deadeye, California Reaper, High Noon, Long Shot, Ninjutsu, and Creeping Death – These options further improve the damage you deal with headshots and weakspot hits. The two in the middle (i.e. Ninjutsu and Creeping Death) give additional benefits to stealth.
  • Legend: Nerves of Tungsten-Steel – Lastly, this perk grants massive DPS due to guaranteed critical hits with headshots and weakspot hits, as well as a buff based on your distance from your target.
Cool perks aid you if you want a stealthier approach.
Cool perks aid you if you want a stealthier approach.

There you have it. These are what we consider as the best perks and skills in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. Bear in mind that you won’t have a lot of points to allocate for all of these, so it boils down to selecting those that truly complement your playstyle and preferred armaments.

Taylor Swift was in attendance at Arrowhead today to see rumored new beau Travis Kelce and his Kansas City Chiefs beat up on the hapless Chicago Bears.

With Kelce catching a TD to make it 41-0, the Fox cameras cut to Swift for the umpteenth time of the broadcast with the golden girl singer seemingly shouting “let’s f***ing go!” Watch the video below with footage from Fox.

Decked out in red and white, Swift watched the game in a suite next to Travis Kelce’s mom after the stud tight end had invited her to watch a game at Arrowhead.

However, that TD came after Fox had already switched away from the Bears game at halftime due to the blowout. Instead, Fox moved over to a close game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Arizona Cardinals. The network was sure to cut back to show the Kelce TD and Swift’s reaction.

Social media has been in overdrive speculating about the potential relationship between Swift and Kelce. Rumors began when Kelce said on his New Heights podcast that he was disappointed not to have the chance to meet Swift and gift her a friendship bracelet during her stop in Kansas City on her Eras Tour.

On The Pat McAfee Show, Kelce went on to say: “I threw the ball in her court and told her, ‘I’ve seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead. You might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one’s a little more lit.’”

Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes told Fox after the game that he felt “a little pressure” to get Kelce a TD knowing that Swift was watching.

First announced back in December last year and recently previewed with a trailer, Marvel Studios will soon be releasing “Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline” – a new coffee table book that serves as an official guide to the MCU timeline.

The 344-page work is being co-written by authors and journalists Anthony Breznican, Rebecca Theodore-Vachon, and Amy Ratcliffe and aims to deconstruct ‘every moment’ from the 15-year history of the MCU – the action running from 2008’s “Iron Man” through to next month’s second season of the Disney+ series “Loki”.

One thing you likely won’t be seeing in it though? References to any series from the now-shuttered Marvel Television division.

Whilst the various shows for ABC, Netflix, Hulu and the like referred to MCU events and even boasted the odd familiar guest star, it was always a one-way street with none of the MCU films referring to events on the shows.

Now, The Direct reports that while the book doesn’t hit retailers until late October, an extended preview of the title is now up on Amazon which allows some of the book’s contents to be searched. After searching for specific entries, they say:

“By searching further, including in the index, it’s easy to see that all Agents of SHIELD material has been completely omitted. There’s no mention of the Terrigen outbreak, Ghost Rider, or Chronicoms. On top of that, nothing from shows like Daredevil, Cloak and Dagger, or Runaways was listed either.”

Our own search of the index found no reference to either Jessica Jones or Luke Cage. The book has been called the “definitive, filmmaker-endorsed guide to the MCU,” but this seemingly puts a final stamp on their expected stance that only Marvel Studios titles are canon to the MCU.

That would mean any of the events within ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Agent Carter” and “Inhumans”; Netflix’s “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist,” “The Punisher” and “The Defenders”; FX’s “Legion”; FOX’s “The Gifted”; Freeform’s “Cloak and Dagger”; and Hulu’s “Runaways,” “Helstrom,” “M.O.D.O.K.” and “Hit-Monkey” are not.

Could that change with the upcoming multiversal shenanigans of the MCU’s fifth and sixth phases? Whilst the events may not be canon, the casting of several Marvel Netflix actors in their old roles for the upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” series suggests fan favorites could return albeit as different incarnations of their roles.

The news comes as “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD,” which was marketed as a tie-in to the MCU films, is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Fall is finally here with a jam-packed

The ongoing talks between the WGA and the AMPTP continued to look promising through the weekend, but the writers couldn’t help but have fun with the studios’ claim that they made their “best and final offer.”

After the statement was made late Saturday before talks continued today, union members took to X to have a little fun with the AMPTP’s choice of words.

It inspired Mike Flanagan and a few others to come up with possible movie titles, should Hollywood ever decide to chronicle this hot mess of a negotiation. “Best Final Offer. 2 Best Final. Best Final Offer: 3D. Off4: The Best & The Final. BFO 5: The Finalest Offer,” he wrote.

Eden Danger followed with a few of her own: “OFFER FINAL OFFER BEST & FINAL OFFER LAST & FINAL OFFER SMART & FINAL OFFER FINAL OFFER TOKYO DRIFT.”

Warren Leight riffed on the phrase by drawing a comparison to David Brooks’ now infamous post about the $78 he spent on a meal in a New Jersey terminal. “The AMPTP’s last, best and final $78 meal at a Newark Airport,” Leight wrote, next to a picture of Brooks’ supposedly pricey burger and fries.

SAG-AFTRA member Mike Puateri weighed in with “I said to my wife, “Okay I’ll wash the dishes tonight but you have to dry them. This is my LAST, BEST, AND FINAL OFFER. Then I dried the dishes.”

Comedy writer Mark Agee shared that “I have given my best and final offer to the doctor with the last matching heart for my transplant. If he doesn’t take it I walk.”

The faux Carol Lombardini on X even came through with a post that read “please WGA, just accept our last best and final offer so we’re not forced to come back again and give you the even-better last-last double-best bottomless Oreo dream extreme offer-tini.”

She then followed up with “we’re having so much fun we’ve jointly decided to do a last best and final day of negotiations” when talks went into Sunday.

Speaking of the fake Lombardini, actor Paul McKinney wrote, “The AMPTP made their “last best and final offer” but then forgot to insert language demanding the identity of so that’s why they’re meeting on Sunday.”

Some WGA members weren’t so amused at the phrase, even though many folks took the time to point out that the words were straight-up legalese. “A “last, best, and final offer” is reserved for the negotiating party who has all the power,” wrote former Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff. “The CEOs took 140 days to come to the table. It’s beyond irresponsible. It’s the opposite of powerful.”

Added David Slack, “When you’ve already made your “last, best, and final” offer three times and then been forced to make a better offer because you can’t make your only product without us — maybe just stop calling them “last, best, and final”?

Added Scott Collette, “Should the AMPTP’s last, best, & final offer not be suitable, then I think the WGA can make the case that a federal mediator is needed. Would love to hear CEOs defend their salaries & historic losses to the FMCS, & open the studios’ books to the gov’t to try to make their case.

The ongoing talks between the WGA and

A Washington Post-ABC News poll released Sunday shows President Joe Biden trailing Donald Trump by 10 percentage points nationally, though that number is “probably an outlier” in part due to other recent polls showing a tight contest, as the Post notes.

Still, Biden’s disapproval rating remains relatively high, as shown by another poll conducted by NBC News that was also published Sunday. In that survey of 1,000 registered voters earlier this month, 56 percent of respondents disapprove of the president’s job performance — the highest mark since he has been in office.

Among the demographics where Biden is not cracking 50 percent are young voters between 18 and 34, women and Latino — all areas where Democratic candidates traditionally best their Republican challengers. Biden is also underwater among independents, with just over one-third (36 percent) giving their approval.

Biden’s age and health are also top of mind for most voters, with nearly three out of four having major or moderate concerns. Regarding the age and health of Trump, who at age 77 is three years Biden’s junior, 47 percent of voters have the same level of concern.

Additionally, just under 60 percent of Democratic primary voters want Biden to be challenged for the 2024 Democratic nomination, according to the NBC News poll. That number closely aligns with the ABC News/Post poll finding that 62 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents don’t want Biden as the nominee.

While the ABC News/Post poll of just more than 1,000 registered voters showed Trump with a wide lead against Biden, other polls have tended to show a neck-and-neck race, with the NBC poll having the pair tied at 46 percent.

As to the potential causes of such an “outlier,” the order of questions in the ABC News/Post poll could be one, according to public opinion researcher Gary Langer. (Respondents were first asked about a variety of topics, such as the economy, many of which showed poor results for Biden).

Voters could also just be sending a message, Langer explained.

“It’s best seen as an opportunity for the public to express its like or dislike of the candidates,” he wrote. “Biden is broadly unpopular and doubts about his suitability for a second term are extensive; wherever they end up in more than a year, a substantial number of Americans today are taking the opportunity to express their displeasure.”
