Over Labor Day weekend — as families gathered for holiday barbecues and as ESPN was televising major sporting events like college football games and U.S. Open tennis — executives from ESPN’s parent company The Walt Disney Co. and the cable giant Charter Communications continued to have discussions about the ongoing carriage dispute that is keeping Disney’s channels off of Spectrum, Charter’s cable TV service.

So what’s the background again?

On Thursday, Aug. 31, Disney’s channels were pulled from the Spectrum TV service, which is owned by Charter Communications, the second-largest cable TV company in the U.S., with about 14.7 million subscribers.

The channels were pulled because Disney and Charter were unable to come to terms on a new carriage agreement, and the sides were far enough apart that an extension of the negotiating time likely would not have been enough to close a deal, forcing the current impasse. A source close to the talks tells The Hollywood Reporter that there was a “big gulf” between them, as of Sunday afternoon.

What channels are blacked out, and where?

Disney’s cable channels — most notably the ESPN networks — as well as FX, Disney Channel, Nat Geo and Freeform, are impacted across Spectrum’s footprint. Also impacted is the ABC broadcast networks in regions where Charter is the cable provider, and where Disney owns the station. That includes New York City, Los Angeles, and Durham-Raleigh, North Carolina, three cities where Disney owns the local station (WABC, KABC, and WTVD respectively).

What are the sticking points in the negotiations?

In most carriage negotiations, the two big issues are the price (how much the carrier will pay per channel), and the distribution (what percentage of its footprint will be required to have the channel in their package).

In this case, a source close to Disney says that the main sticking point is what role Disney’s streaming services should play. They say that Charter wants to have Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ in the bundle without any extra payment. Disney is said to have offered a menu of options, which could include Charter selling the Disney services to its customers, or bundling it with other offerings.

Charter, meanwhile, told Wall Street analysts that programmers like Disney built their streaming services off of the cash generated by their linear channels, and shifted programming investments from linear to streaming.

So the big holdup is streaming. Will it remain an a la carte offering as it stands today, or will Charter tie it to its linear offerings in some capacity? There are also some concerns around distribution, and how widely available Disney’s channels will need to be.

Are there other options to get ESPN or ABC content?

Yes. Some markets have alternative cable providers, and satellite TV service like DirecTV or Dish is also an option. Increasingly consumers are opting to choose “virtual MVPDs,” which offer pay-TV service over the internet. The most popular vMVPDs are YouTube TV and Hulu with Live TV (which happens to be owned by Disney).

In fact, both Disney and Charter are pushing consumers to vMVPDs. In an unprecedented move, Charter is telling some customers to consider Fubo, the sports-centric vMVPD, and is offering a discounted rate for three months (yes, the cable company is giving its customers an offer to cancel their TV service).

Disney, late Monday evening, launched a new consumer-focused campaign directing consumers to other options, including Hulu with Live TV, which it also owns.

Is Charter Spectrum giving customers rebates?

Yes, Charter Spectrum is offering customers who call in to customer service a $15 rebate. If the dispute drags on, it is possible that offer expands.

Are carriage deals always this contentious?

No. Most carriage negotiations happen quietly and are completed without fanfare. Occasionally the dispute bursts into the press as a deadline approaches, and very rarely channels are pulled from the TV services.

Disney has found itself in a handful of carriage disputes over the past two years. Last October, Disney’s channels, including ESPN and ABC, went dark on the satellite TV service Dish Network and its Sling TV streaming offering in a similar dispute. The channels were offline for a couple of days before the companies reached a deal.

And in late 2021, Disney’s channels went dark on YouTube TV, but also returned after a deal was reached in a couple of days.

In an extremely unusual move, Charter executives held an analyst call after the blackout began, telling Wall Street that it had reached the “point of indifference” as to whether it stays in the video business, or abandons it. “We’re on the edge of a precipice. We’re either moving forward with a new collaborative video model, or we’re moving on,” Charter CEO Chris Winfrey said.

So Charter says it might exit from the pay-TV business. Is that a thing? Have other cable operators stopped offering TV?

Yes. Earlier this year the cable provider WOW!, which operates in parts of the midwest and south and has a little over 500,000 subscribers, stopped offering TV service and shifted its TV subs to YouTube TV. And last year Frontier Communications, which operates in a handful of markets across the country and also had about 500,000 TV subscribers, stopped offering its TV service and pushed its TV subs to YouTube TV.

Altice, which has about 2.4 million pay-TV subscribers, including in the lucrative and populous New York City suburbs, has publicly weighed exploring options for its TV business, though it has not settled on a formal plan.

Will this deal have repercussions for the broader entertainment and media landscape?

Yes, many TV providers have a “most favored nation” clause, which allows them to to take advantage if a competitors cuts a better deal.

But perhaps more importantly, this deal has the potential to dramatically reshape both the pay-TV and streaming ecosystem. If streaming is more closely integrated into the bundle, Charter has said it will push for similar moves by other companies that operate both streaming services and pay-TV channels. If Charter exits the TV business altogether, it will likely cause millions of homes to abandon the pay-TV bundle, and potentially speed up its decline as other, smaller TV providers follow suit.

The result will likely be far less spending on content from media and entertainment companies, including on sports and original programming.

“The collateral damage could be wide-ranging from sports leagues with rights coming up from renewal, local TV station affiliates seeking material step-ups and creative talent tied to the programming investments made by linear networks,” MoffettNathanson analysts Michael Nathanson and Craig Moffett in an analyst report Friday.

“The stark reality is the media and distribution landscape has been building up to this moment for many years. Each media company owns some of the blame,” they add, while Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall calls the dispute a “reckoning” for the media business.

Subhash Ghai and Sanjay Dutt recently reunited to celebrate the 30 years of their iconic film Khalnayak, which also starred Madhuri Dixit.

Subhash Ghai and Sanjay Dutt had a grand reunion for the celebration of 30 years of their iconic movie Khalnayak. A special screening of the 1993 action drama was organised by Subhash Ghai in Mumbai on Monday. The event saw Sanjay, Subhash, Jackie Shroff, Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun in attendance. However, Madhuri Dixit, who played the leading lady in Khalnayak, skipped the event.

During the event, Subhash tried to tease Sanjay about Madhuri, leaving the actor visibly embarrassed. When the filmmaker was asked if he was certain that the movie would be a hit and remembered even after so many years, Subhash said, “I was always quite confident but as a director you have your moments of nervousness too. But Sanju was more confident than me about the movie.”

Taking a fun jibe at Sanjay, the director added, “Ye (Sanjay Dutt) bolta tha, yeh picture bohot door tak jaayegi par dekhta tha Madhuri ki taraf.” For the unversed, Sanjay and Madhuri were romantically linked to each other in the ’90s. They’ve worked together in many movies, including Saajan.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Dutt recalled how Subhash Ghai made him wear a Ghagra Choli for the iconic song Choli Ke Peeche featuring Madhuri Dixit. He said, “Main set pe aaya toh vohi bandook pehni thi. Toh Subhash ji ne bola isko ghagra choli pehnao. Main shock main tha, maine bola ‘Sir aap kya kar rahe ho?’ Unhone bola ‘Nahi tu pehen ke aa.’ Maine bola ‘Ghagra choli kyu pehen ke aaun?’ Unhone bola ‘Kyuki tu choli ke peeche rahega. (I came to the set and Subhash said, ‘Make him wear the blouse and skirt. I was shocked. I asked, ‘Sir, what are you doing?’ He told me to go wear it. I asked, ‘Why should I wear the skirt and blouse?’ He said, ‘You will be behind it’).”

The battle between Charter Communications and Walt Disney, spurred due to cord-cutting, is now getting very tangled.

Charter suggested last week that it might be ready to cut Disney networks from its programming lineup after the two companies reached an impasse in talks to extend their carriage contract Now Disney is hinting to Charter subscribers that they might want to cut their connection with the large cable distributor.

Disney released a series of social-media promotions Sunday evening telling Charter subscribers to consider subscribing to Hulu with its live TV option, an offering that would get them dozens of the cable networks they watch via Charter, but also some they don’t currently receive — namely outlets owned by Disney. “There’s no contract, no cable box, and no wait time to subscribe,” Disney said in a blog post Sunday. The company introduced the option, which offers 90 different channels, in 2017.Disney planned to issue the message about Hulu through many of its social-media channels.

Disney’s Hulu maneuver represents just the latest bit of wrangling between the two companies, which appear locked in a battle that could upend the media industry. Disney on Thursday yanked its popular TV networks, which include ESPN, ABC and Disney Channel, from Charter’s Spectrum cable service, which reaches nearly 15 million homes, including many in big markets like New York City and Los Angeles. At issue, the companies say, is Disney’s interest in seeking higher rates placed against Charter’s desire to gain more flexibility in the way it packages Disney’s properties Charter also wants to offer Disney streaming services like Disney+ at no additional cost to its customers — a move that would erode some of the new business Disney has gained with these popular hubs.

“This is not a typical carriage dispute,” said Christopher Winfrey, Charter’s CEO, during a call with investors Friday morning.

Charter has noted that the rise of streaming services such as Disney+ and Hulu has degraded cable, forcing customers to pay for channels that have less premium content, or for networks they may not regularly use, then spurring them to pay in a second arrangement for a streaming alternative. Charter, said Winfrey, has proposed a new model that would allow for the flexibility of not forcing customers who don’t regularly engage with Disney or ESPN networks to pay more money for them, while making available ad-supported versions of Disney streaming services as part of packages.

On Sunday, Disney appeared to propose that Charter customers dump the distributor and just use streaming to get all the networks they might want. “Hulu + Live TV also comes with Hulu’s deep library of exclusive TV shows and hit films, ad-supported Disney+ and ESPN+ all in one plan, and unlimited DVR, which allows you to record and store your favorite content for up to nine months,” Disney said. “Disney’s networks and stations are also available on other TV streaming services such as DIRECTV Stream, YouTube TV, Sling, and Fubo.”

A more descriptive look at Jeff Goldblum’s deleted scene as the Grandmaster in Thor: Love and Thunder has finally been revealed.

After making a grand entrance to the MCU in 2017’s Thor: Ragnorak, Jeff Goldblum was missing in Thor 4.

It was confirmed that there was a plan for Goldblum to reappear, but director Taika Waititi confirmed that the scene was cut, noting, “You have to do what’s best for the film.”

New Look at Deleted Jeff Goldblum Scene

Artist William Groebe released an array of storyboards from Thor: Love and Thunder, some including deleted scenes of Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster.

The scene depicts Thor, Jane Foster, and Valkyrie seemingly taking Korg’s disembodied head to the Grandmaster for treatment on a moon. The entire sequence is titled “The Moon of Shame”.

Previously revealed concept art already highlighted elements of this scene, particularly Goldblum’s Grandmaster with Korg’s head on the Moon of Shame.

However, in this new look by Groebe, more action is shown with the godly trio visiting the Moon of Shame.

While a robot looks to be working on giving Korg the ability to be mobile, the Grandmaster is alarmed by the realization that an attack is happening.

As those may remember in Ragnorak, Grandmaster wasn’t much of a warrior himself, so it’s comedic to see him armed with some alien weapon. This panel also gives a close-up look at Korg’s head:

Zooming out, it’s revealed that Korg’s head has been welded to a miniature tank that he presumably has control over. This panel also shows Grandmaster and Korg running to join the fight:

Finally, back to focusing on Mighty Thor and Thor Odinson, Gorr and his army are shown unleashing an attack on the Moon of Shame.

Could the Grandmaster Appear in Thor 5?

Director Taika Waititi could possibly return for a potential Thor 5, which would be another opportunity for Jeff Goldblum to return to the MCU.

When Waititi was recently asked about a fifth installment, he questioned, “What is left to do to him (Thor)?” while also adding that he doesn’t think they “can have a villain that’s weaker than Hela.”

Currently, it remains uncertain whether the Grandmaster will make a comeback in the MCU, but there is future potential for the character.

In the first episode of She-Hulk, a Sakaaran spacecraft, which resembles the Grandmaster’s Commodore, was shown.

This hinted at the possibility of Goldblum’s Marvel character making a reappearance, or at the very least connecting the growing MCU.

Considering characters like Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, Idris Elba’s Heimdall, and Jaime Alexander’s Lady Sif all have made returns, the franchise is not opposed to reintroducing previously utilized characters.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now streaming on Disney+.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has risen from the depths of development hell, two years after Paradox Interactive parted ways with the game’s former developer, Hardsuit Labs, and . The publisher has since recruited  and  studio The Chinese Room to work on the sequel to the original RPG from 2004. Bloodlines 2 is now set to arrive in fall 2024.

The Chinese Room has retained some of the original concepts while tossing out others to reframe Bloodlines 2 in its own vision. The modern-day Seattle setting has survived, as has some of Hardsuit’s level and art design. However, creative director Alex Skidmore told that the game now has “a new code base with different gameplay mechanics and RPG systems.” You’ll play as an elder vampire instead of the fresh face you might be familiar with , though the protagonist has been in stasis for some time, so you’ll be getting used to the wintry setting at the same time as them.

This is a new type of challenge for The Chinese Room, which until now has focused on atmospheric walking simulators infused with mystery, as  notes. the studio has endured its own troubles over the years. It in 2017 due to funding issues before Sumo Digital took over and revived it (Sumo Digital itself later ).

We’ll find out more about what The Chinese Room has in store for fans in the coming months. Paradox plans to discuss Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 in more depth in January.

Monday’s episode of 90 Day: The Last Resort took a very NSFW turn when the couples were asked to openly discuss their sex lives with a sex educator. Big Ed got upset after his fiancée, Liz, had no issue openly shaming his skills in the bedroom.

Ed and Liz have been struggling during their experience on 90 Day: The Last Resort, which features 90 Day Fiancé couples who’ve reached breaking points undergoing a couples retreat to determine if they want to continue on with their relationships. Big Ed hasn’t been taking therapy seriously — even cheating during one of the exercises and infuriating the other couples — and Liz has accused him of completely talking over her and not putting in real effort to improve their relationship. Liz’s annoyance with Ed clearly spilled over during their time with a sex educator, when right off the bat, Ed made an unfunny joke — asking the sex educator where babies come from — which once again, annoyed all the other couples. Liz shot back, “I’m like, not in the mood for jokes at all” as Jovi commented, “That was not as funny as you think it is.” When Liz and Ed were later asked to rate their sex life, she didn’t hold back in front of the other couples. Liz said Ed was out of shape and that she preferred to please herself.

“I’m not someone to just like stop and give you like five or 10 minutes to catch your breath and then like get back into it,” she said. “I prefer to get myself off.”

Liz also told cameras, “Thinking about being intimate with Ed right now, furthest thing on my mind because it’s just really bad. If we don’t try to work on our sex life in the bedroom, the relationship’s over.”

Liz insisted to the sex educator that she prefers to please herself and clearly wanted nothing to do with Ed sexually. She reiterated that “he runs out of breath so fast.” Ed for once just sat there quietly, while his other costars were openly amused at his expense.

Ed defended himself to cameras, noting that he just had surgery and he was trying to get back into shape, but Liz interjected that it had been months since the surgery. Liz had no remorse for shading him publicly, saying she just wanted to be honest in therapy. She also admitted she was in fact getting back at him for annoying her with his jokes.

“I told you to stop being funny and you just poke the bear a little bit too hard,” she said.

After therapy, Ed told Liz he was upset at her for “throwing missiles” at him, accusing her of intentionally trying to embarrass him. Liz denied it and wasn’t apologetic at all. When Ed pointed out that no other castmember complained about their partner, she told him to “shut up.” Later, the two had a private conversation when Ed calmed down and Liz reiterated that she was upset Ed was making jokes and not taking things seriously. Ed agreed that he needed to pull back on the comedy.

“The minute things get serious or I get nervous, I go funny,” he said. “And I’m sorry for making jokes instead of paying attention.”

They both acknowledged that they had things to work on and Ed promised he was going to be more serious throughout the experience.

ET spoke to Ed and Liz ahead of this season of 90 Day: The Last Resort, and she shared why she keeps taking Ed back despite his bad behavior. She shared that Ed had a sweet side to him cameras didn’t see.

“Well, when I first met Ed we actually didn’t really get along, but then during the pandemic when we met at the restaurant, our restaurant was just re-opening,” she recalled. “And he didn’t want to go home and then I was getting out of a very bad relationship. So then we would just kind of hang out and just talk for like a half hour after work every day. So I got to, like, get to know him. Not Big Ed — I got to know Ed, his heart, how he is. And that’s a side that people don’t get to see. So, I just got to know about him and his family and his mom and he was so good with [my daughter] Riley. Riley would go to work with me almost every day during the pandemic because there’s no childcare and no school and over time, he would just bring her, like, little toys and stickers. So that was when I kind of saw a different side to him. So we became friends and I just got to know his heart. Then when we started dating, he always made sure I was eating, he always made sure I had my coffee. I’d get off of work and he had my bubble bath ready every night, or, he, like, massaged my feet.”

“I know Ed,” she continued. “And I mean, it’s been pretty rocky. But I also get to see, like, how his heart is. And it’s not always just negative.”

Monday's episode of 90 Day: The Last

Get your tissues ready, Days of Our Lives fanatics.

We knew this day would come since the heartbreaking news that John Aniston had passed away in November of 2023.

According to Days of Our Lives spoilers for the week of 9-04-23, the funeral is coming up on Thursday—and it promises to be equal parts drama and tears.

Victor Kiriakis wasn’t only a beloved character but one of the most iconic and influential in the series’ history. He touched almost every Salemite’s life, and characters will likely continue to remember him for years.

Unlike Alice and Tom Horton, who everyone remembers fondly, Victor made as many enemies as he did friends, and some Salemites loved to hate him. The flashbacks have offered a balanced look at the former mob boss, with his family devastated and others more shocked than sad.

Victor’s funeral will undoubtedly offer us more of the same. Even his nearest and dearest had conflicted feelings about him; as Brady said, Victor was a hard person to be related to even though you know he loved you.

It’ll also offer both fans and characters a sense of closure. After this, there probably won’t be much talk of Victor. That’s bittersweet news because the flashbacks and conversations about him have been fantastic.

But his family will never forget him, and from time to time, they’ll probably mention missing him or imagine how he would have responded to current events.

The funeral is also an opportunity to catch up with some characters who have been off-screen. Days of Our Lives doesn’t always do a great job of bringing people back for funerals, but almost everyone is there this time.

Theresa, Philip, Sonny, and Chelsea will all return to town to say goodbye to Victor, though only Theresa and Philip will stay around a little longer.

Of course, there are also people missing who should be there. Hope, Ciara, and Claire were close to Victor, and Hope and Ciara could also help support Shawn during this difficult time.

Someone should arrange for Parker to be there too—un-SORASed, he’s almost thirteen and can certainly handle a funeral, and he was close to his Grandma Maggie and Grandpa Victor even though Philip turned out not to be his father. Melanie should also come on her late father’s behalf since Daniel was Victor’s godson.

We can’t have everything, though, and a far better crowd is attending this funeral than we usually get. The guest list shows Victor’s importance to Days of Our Lives; he’s getting a richly deserved big send-off that is richly deserved.

Please scroll down for the complete spoiler list for Days of Our Lives during the week of 9-04-23.

Xander receives a job offer.

Xander already works for the Spectator but has a bad habit of allowing criminal masterminds to entice him into bad behavior. All they have to do is offer him a large sum of money.

Since spoilers say that EJ wants revenge on Ava again, he’s likely to ask Xander to attack her.

Taking this job is a bad idea. Sarah rejected Xander because he allowed Ava to hire him to kidnap Bonnie and Susan, leading to Susan’s death. Now Chloe believes Xander’s changed, and Sarah’s fighting renewed feelings for him.

If Xander screws this up, he’ll lose both women. No amount of money is worth it.

Theresa surprises Brady.

Theresa arrives for Victor’s funeral, but her first stop is Brady’s doorstep.

It’s odd how people visiting for such a sad occasion keep making detours to reconnect with ex-lovers. Philip did the same thing, making a beeline for Chloe as soon as he got into Salem.

Only in Salem would people put aside their grief to try to rekindle an old relationship! But maybe Brady and Theresa can reboot their relationship, leaving Chloe free to try again with Philip if Xander leaves her for Sarah.

Chloe and Nicole have a tense exchange.

Chloe’s about the only person who accepted Nicole’s interest in EJ, and Nicole agreed to back off Chloe about Xander. So what are they fighting about?

Does Nicole suspect that Chloe secretly still holds a torch for Philip? Chloe might counter that by accusing Nicole of still loving Eric.

If the wrong person overhears THAT argument, it could lead to disaster!

Rafe learns of trouble at Bayview.

It’s not hard to put together what’s happening here.

Spoilers say that EJ wants to kill Ava and that Harris’ attempt to help her blows up in both their faces.

Could this lead to a hostage situation? And will the random woman who Ava thought was Susan turn out to have a more prominent role in what goes down?

Victor’s funeral brings his family together.

These promise to be among the saddest scenes Days of Our Lives has ever had.

Victor’s death left a large hole in Salem, and many of the actors were close to John Aniston in real life so these grief scenes will be doubly authentic.

Although Victor’s family is deeply mourning, what’s a soap funeral without extra drama? Spoilers say Xander and Sonny will come to blows, and there may be other tension in the air.

Maggie again pushes Sarah to tell Xander the truth.

Maggie’s grief will push her to urge Sarah again to tell Xander the truth. She sees Xander as a younger Victor and doesn’t understand why Sarah would try to hide her baby from him.

And if Sarah helps break up the fight between Xander and Sonny or tends to Xander’s war wounds, Maggie’ll feel even more strongly that Sarah is in denial about her feelings for the Scottish semi-scoundrel.

But she needs to stop bothering Sarah. Not only is Sarah an adult, but one day, Xander will walk in on one of these conversations and want to know what Sarah’s keeping from him!

Plus, this time around, Sarah’s supposed to go into labor for real—could that be accelerated because of the stress Maggie’s causing her?

The Mystery Man's Identity - Days of Our Lives

John learns a secret about the mystery man.

After thoroughly investigating John Doe’s background, John Black will learn something significant about the memoryless man.

Many viewers have speculated that John D is John B’s father. John Black learning that the people he thought he belonged to aren’t his parents has become a silly trope in Salem; it happens at least once a decade!

So, this might be a red herring. But if not, it’s just as well.

John’s latest alleged biological father was a hot mess of ugly stereotypes about Asians that many viewers would rather forget, so who needs them to stay related?

Marcia de Rousse, who played Dr. Ludwig on the HBO original series “True Blood,” died in Altadena, Calif., on Saturday from a long illness, her agency told Variety. She was 70.

De Rousse was born in Doniphan, Mo., and graduated from the University of Missouri.

She was known for her role as Dr. Patricia Ludwig, a doctor for supernatural beings, in three episodes of “True Blood.” She first appeared in Season 2 on the episode “Scratches,” and later worked on the drama series’ fourth and seventh seasons. Her other television credits include “St. Elsewhere,” “The Fall Guy” and “Schoooled.”

On the film side, de Rousse worked on the 2003 dramedy “Tiptoes,” starring Gary Oldman, Kate Beckinsale, Patricia Arquette, Matthew McConaughey and Peter Dinklage. She played Kathleen in the film.

De Rousse made her feature film debut as a Hotel Rainbow guest in 1981’s “Under the Rainbow,” directed by Steve Rash. Set in 1938, the comedy film is loosely based on the gathering of little people who audition for roles as Munchkin’s in the MGM classic “The Wizard of Oz.” The cast includes Chevy Chase, Carrie Fisher and Eve Arden.

De Rousse last worked on the 2016 psychological horror film “The Disappointments Room,” starring Beckinsale and Lucas Till.

Wait, do I want a Rita Ora look? I regularly love the 32-year-old’s style for its playfulness, but her most recent look is both a little bit witchy and a little bit floral in a completely sophisticated way. Bury me in this, it’s great!

At the 2023 amfAR Gala in Venice, the singer-actor wore yet another sheer dress, a trend she’s been staunchly at the center of, but with an elegant twist. Draped in what looks like black organza over a tan bodysuit, her dress also features a petal-like white silk sculptural element that’s absolutely gorgeous. The gown is by Stéphane Rolland, and Ora’s team accessorized it with platform sandals, a handful of rings, and a diamond necklace. Also love the bejeweled belt on the bodysuit!

If you want to see the NSFW version of the look, sans body suit, Ora posted that version over on her Instagram, and it’s really quite classy, though I get why she didn’t want to deal with All That on the pink carpet. (Also…#ad? Get your bag, Rita! I wanna be paid to wear couture!)

While you might expect an Old Hollywood hairstyle—or maybe just a chignon—with a dress this glamorous, Rita Ora kept it fresh with 2000s-style baby braids and metallic makeup.

Gary Wright, the musician best known for his hit singles “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive,” has died. He was 80. Wright’s son Dorian confirmed the news to Variety; no cause of death was announced.

He was a founding member of the U.K.-based band Spooky Tooth and was an in-demand session player from the late ’60s on, playing on all of George Harrison’s solo albums — including his epochal 1970 debut, “All Things Must Pass” — and on Ringo Starr’s early singles (and, much later, with Starr’s All-Starr Band) as well as Nilsson, Tim Rose, B.B. King and many others. Yet he will be best remembered for the mid-1970s hits mentioned above, which were part of a vaguely mystical, synthesizer-driven style of hit single of the era — Steve Miller’s “Fly Like an Eagle” is another example — and which saw him appearing on many music shows, wearing satin gear and rocking a keytar.

A native of New Jersey, Wright was a child actor who appeared on Broadway in a version of “Fanny.” He later decided to become a doctor and traveled to Berlin to study medicine, but continued playing with bands, including one called the New York Times. While that group was on a 1967 tour of Europe with Traffic, Wright met Chris Blackwell, founder of Traffic’s label, Island Records — the two also had a mutual friend in Traffic/Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller — who was impressed with the young musician’s talent and convinced him to come to London. There, Blackwell teamed him up with pianist Mike Harrison and drummer Mike Kellie and, with Wright as singer and organist, Spooky Tooth was formed.

The band’s first two albums, “It’s All About” and 1969’s “Spooky Two,” ‘”Spooky Two,” both of which were produced by Miller and featured Wright cowriting every song, were not chart successes but created a major buzz in musicians’ circles. The members were all recruited for session work and their songs were covered by many artists, with the Three Dog Night rendering “I’ve Got Enough Heartache,” the Move performing “Sunshine Help Me” regularly and Judas Priest covering “Better by You, Better Than Me.” However, the group’s third album, “Ceremony,” was a creative misstep and Wright left the band in 1970.

He signed with A&M Records and released a strong solo album, “Extraction,” in 1970, and two players on that albums — drummer Alan White and bassist Klaus Voorman — brought Wright into the Beatles’ orbit. While Harrison was recording “All Things Must Pass” with producer Phil Spector, the latter characteristically called for more musicians. Voorman suggested Wright, who happened to be playing a different session across town — upon getting the call, Wright canceled that session and dashed over to EMI’s storied Abbey Road studios, where he began a friendship with Harrison that was to endure for the rest of their lives. He played on all of Harrison’s solo albums and multiple related projects, including Ringo Starr’s early singles “It Don’t Come Easy” and “Back Off Boogaloo”; Harrison even backed Wright during an appearance on American TV’s “Dick Cavett Show” in 1971.

The following year he reformed Spooky Tooth and released two albums while continuing to work with Harrison, with whom he shared an interest in Eastern religions; the two traveled to India together in 1974.

After the reformed group split again, Wright relocated to New York and united with power manager Dee Anthony (who managed Humble Pie and soon-to-be superstar Peter Frampton) and signed with Warner Bros. Records. His first album for the label, “The Dream Weaver” — with a title track inspired by his trip to India with Harrison — was released in 1975, and while the single was a slow builder, by the following spring it was a major hit and Wright had become a major star. However, it was nearly two years before he followed with “The Light of Smiles,” and his subsequent efforts did not approach his previous success. His last charting single was 1981’s “Really Wanna Know You.”

In the following years, Wright specialized in instrumental and soundtrack work — although he made a surprise appearance in the 1992 film “Wayne’s World,” singing a re-recorded version of “Dream Weaver” — but he returned to more conventional rock music and issued a series of albums, with the last one, “Connected,” being released in 2010. He reformed Spooky Tooth again in 2004, and toured frequently, as a solo act and with Ringo’s All-Starr Band.

Over the years, his songs have continued to be covered — Chaka Khan recorded a blazing version of “Love Is Alive” for her 1984 smash album “I Feel for You” — and sampled by artists ranging from Jay-Z to Tone-Loc.

Elon Musk is threatening to sue the Anti-Defamation League to clear the name of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The billionaire had previously blamed the organization for losing advertising revenue.

“To clear our platform’s name on the matter of anti-Semitism, it looks like we have no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League … oh the irony!” Musk posted.

The Tesla owner had previously made it “super clear” that he was “pro-free speech but against anti-Semitism of any kind.”

Musk accused the ADL of making “unfounded accusations” against X/Twitter stating that this has made advertisers “pause” their spending on the platform.

“Advertisers avoid controversy, so all that is needed for ADL to crush our US & European ad revenue is to make unfounded accusations,” he shared on X. “They have much less power in Asia, so our ad revenue there is still strong.”

Musk continued, “This ‘controversy’ causes advertisers to ‘pause,’ but that pause is permanent until ADL gives the green light, which they will not do without us agreeing to secretly suspend or shadowban any account they don’t like. That is the relationship they’ve had with X/Twitter for many years. Presumably, they have that with all Western search or social media orgs.”

When reached for comment, the ADL said they don’t comment on legal threats as a matter of policy. However, a spokesperson for the organization has acknowledged the “coordinated attack” on the ADL with the #BanTheADL hashtag that Musk has also interacted with.

“ADL is unsurprised yet undeterred that antisemites, white supremacists, conspiracy theorists and other trolls have launched a coordinated attack on our organization. This type of thing is nothing new,” an ADL spokesperson said in a statement.

The statement continued, “This onslaught comes following our participation in the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington, where ADL proudly marched shoulder-to-shoulder with African-American leaders and those from other minority communities. It also follows a meeting with the leadership of X, formerly known as Twitter, that clearly upset these hateful groups.”

“Such insidious efforts don’t daunt us. Instead, they drive us to be unflinching in our commitment to fight hate in all its forms and ensure the safety of Jewish communities and other marginalized groups.”

In a separate post, Musk reassured a fan that “ADL seems to be responsible for most of our revenue loss” adding, “In our case, they would potentially be on the hook for destroying half the value of the company, so roughly $22 billion.”

Musk accused ADL of pushing “hard for us to shut down accounts like [Libs of TikTok], even though it has nothing to do with anti-Semitism, which is their supposed charter!”

Earlier in the day, Musk said that since he acquired the digital platform “the ADL has been trying to kill this platform by falsely accusing it & me of being anti-Semitic.”

In a second post, Musk continued, “Our US advertising revenue is still down 60%, primarily due to pressure on advertisers by @ADL (that’s what advertisers tell us), so they almost succeeded in killing X/Twitter!”

Miley Cyrus had an interesting year in 2013. That was the year when the former Disney Channel star twerked on Robin Thicke and got naked in her “Wrecking Ball” music video. Cyrus released her record “Bangerz” the following year and soon embarked on a 78-date tour by the same name that made nearly $63 million — though to hear her tell it today, the singer never made “a dime” from the touring experience.

Over the last few weeks, Cyrus has opened up to fans through a series of TikTok videos she’s titled “Used to be Young” in honor of her new song by the same name. In Sunday’s episode, Cyrus revealed that despite the overwhelming success of the “Bangerz” tour (it was the 16th highest-grossing tour of the year), she didn’t make anything because she “paid for it all” herself.

The tour was reflective of that period in Cyrus’ life and music, though she admitted that others thought her ideas were so “outlandish” that she didn’t get a lot of encouragement. As she said, “The ‘Bangerz’ tour was an investment in myself.”

“A lot of the ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces,” she continued. “I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face, on my tongue.”

Cyrus added, “I wanted to end it with a ‘Truman Show’ reference. So I flew out on a giant hotdog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign like Jim Carrey does. Because I felt like ‘The Truman Show’ was really a reflection of my life.”

The singer then addressed the financial aspect of the tour, which was enormous. And apparently, because so few people backed her plans, she forged ahead alone. She explained, “I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent. And when everyone kept saying: ‘Why are you doing this? You’re going to do, like, 100 shows and you’re not going to make any money?’”

“I said: ‘There’s no one I would rather invest in than myself.’ So I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I, and the fans, deserve,” Cyrus concluded.

It’s worth remembering that Cyrus was 20 and 21 years old at the time, and was slammed by adults far older than her for exploring life outside of the confines of the “Hannah Montana” character that had defined much of her teen years. While she might have made some choices then that she wouldn’t make now, the body shaming and criticism that Cyrus was hit with wasn’t exactly an appropriate reaction to what she was doing.

Earlier this year, Cyrus admitted to British Vogue that she carried a lot of “guilt and shame for years” as a result. She added, “I was creating attention for myself because I was dividing myself from a character I had played. Anyone, when you’re 20 or 21, you have more to prove. ‘I’m not my parents.’ ‘I am who I am.’”

Cyrus also described herself as a child at the time, and continued, “Now that I’m an adult, I realize how harshly I was judged. I was harshly judged as a child by adults and now, as an adult, I realize that I would never harshly judge a child.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs made an unprecedented move Monday to reassign his music publishing rights back to Bad Boy artists like the Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans and Mase who made Bad Boy Records the music industry juggernaut it is today.

The development, first reported by Billboard, was a process that reportedly began in 2021 as the rapper and producer was turning down acquisition offers for the entire Bad Boy catalogue outright. Most Bad Boy artists have agreed to the deal, the details of which are largely being kept under wraps.

This year also marks the label’s 30th anniversary.

The deal comes three years after Mase claimed he offered Combs $2 million to buy back his own publishing rights but was denied. In a since-deleted Instagram post, Mase wrote in 2020 around the time Combs received the Industry Icon award at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy gala, “Your past business practices knowingly has continued purposely starved your artist and been extremely unfair to the very same artist that helped u obtain that Icon Award on the iconic Badboy label.”

He continued: “For example, u still got my publishing from 24 years ago in which u gave me $20k. Which makes me never want to work w/ u as any artist wouldn’t… This is not Black excellence at all.”

Looking to Bad Boy Records’ early days, the label broke big soon after its launch in 1994. Craig Mack’s “Flava in Ya Ear” went straight to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs and broke into the Top 10 on the pop charts. Combs followed up that hit song with the near-immediate classic “Juicy” from the Notorious B.I.G.

Combs then added artists like Evans, Total and 112, all of whom scored hits for the brand. The label produced everything in-house and came up with a number of creative marketing tactics that each succeeded in pushing its visibility further. Other standout artists over the years have included Carl Thomas, Shyne, Dream, Danity Kane and French Montana.

So perhaps Combs’ decision to reassign the music rights of Bad Boy Records is the mogul’s way of making amends with artists like Mase who helped build him up — or maybe it is the idea of a shrewd businessman who sees yet another way to land on top. But as the man himself told the graduating class of Howard University in 2014: “Some of my biggest successes come from some of my biggest failures. I had two choices: Either I was going to sit in that failure and give up, or I was going to make a decision and step out of the darkness.”

Combs has a new album, “The L.O.V.E. Album: Off the Grid,” dropping Sept. 15.

Nancy Buirski, an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker whose eye was honed as a still photographer and picture editor, died on Wednesday at her home in Manhattan. She was 78.

The cause had not yet been determined, her sister and only immediate survivor, Judith Cohen, said.

After founding the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in 1998 at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and directing it for a decade, Ms. Buirski (pronounced BURR-skee) made her own first documentary, “The Loving Story,” in 2011.

The film explored the case of Mildred and Richard Loving, who faced imprisonment because their interracial marriage in 1958 was illegal in Virginia. (She was part-Black and part-Native American, and he was white.)

Their challenge to the law resulted in a landmark civil rights ruling by the United States Supreme Court in 1967 that voided state anti-miscegenation laws.

The documentary, directed by Ms. Buirski, won an Emmy for outstanding historical programming, long form, and a Peabody Award. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and made its television debut on HBO during Black History Month in 2012.

“Drawing from a wealth of stunning archival footage,” Dave Itzkoff wrote in The New York Times. “‘The Loving Story’ recreates a seminal moment in history in uncommon style, anchoring a timely message of marriage equality in a personal, human love story.”

Ms. Buirski went on to seek more stories to tell, drawing on a wide range of voices and experiences.

“Nancy was a completely original thinker and a visionary,” her frequent collaborator and producer, Susan Margolin, said in an email. “With every film she pushed the limits of the art form with her kaleidoscopic, unique approach to storytelling.”

Ms. Buirski directed, co-produced and wrote “Afternoon of a Faun” (2013), about the ballerina Tanaquil Le Clercq, who contracted polio while on tour in 1956; and “By Sidney Lumet” (2015), about the acclaimed filmmaker, both of which were broadcast by PBS on “American Masters.”

She also directed, co-produced and wrote “The Rape of Recy Taylor” (2017), about the 1944 kidnapping of a Black woman by seven white men. Despite their confessions, they were never charged, although in 2011 the Alabama Legislature apologized for the state’s failure to prosecute her attackers.

The critic Scout Tafoya, writing on the website RogerEbert.com, called the film “a stirring, infuriating marvel,” and it was awarded a human rights prize at the 74th Venice International Film Festival.

Ms. Buirski went on to direct, co-produce and write “A Crime on the Bayou” (2021) about a 1966 altercation sparked by school integration, and “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy” (2023), which explores John Schlesinger’s 1969 film starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman.

She was also a special adviser to “Summer of Soul” (2021), Questlove’s Academy Award-winning concert-film documentary, based on rediscovered footage, about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.

Years earlier, as a picture editor on the international desk at The New York Times, Ms. Buirski was credited with choosing the image that won the newspaper its first Pulitzer Prize for photography, in 1994.

After seeking a photograph to accompany an article on war and famine in southern Sudan, she choose one by Kevin Carter, a South African photojournalist, of an emaciated toddler collapsing on the way to a United Nations feeding center as a covetous vulture lurked in the background.

Ms. Buirski commended the photo to Nancy Lee, The Times’ picture editor at the time. She then proposed it, strongly, for the front page, because, she recalled telling another editor, “This is going to win the paper’s first-ever Pulitzer Prize for photography.”

The photograph ended up appearing on an inside page in the issue of March 26, 1993, but the reaction from readers, concerned about the child’s fate, was so strong that The Times published an unusual editors’ note afterward explaining that the child had continued to the feeding center after Mr. Carter chased away the vulture.

The picture won the Pulitzer in the feature photography category. (Mr. Carter died by suicide a few months later at 33.)

Ms. Buirski was born Nancy Florence Cohen on June 24, 1945, in Manhattan to Daniel and Helen (Hochstein) Cohen. Her father was a paper manufacturer.

After graduating from New Rochelle High School in Westchester County, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y., in 1967.

She worked as an editor for the Magnum photo agency before joining The Times.

As a photographer she produced a book of 150 images titled “Earth Angels: Migrant Children in America” (1994), which vividly captured the children of migrant farmworkers at work during the day and attending school at night and dramatized the hazards they faced from poor housing, harsh working conditions and exposure to pesticides.

Her marriages to Peter Buirski and Kenneth Friedlein ended in divorce.

Why the Delays?

The writers’ strike started in early May, with the actors starting their strike in July. The strikes have caused a huge impact in Hollywood, with production and development of projects taking huge hits. Marvel was also touched by these strikes, resulting in the delayed releases of several shows. Marvel would like to still make each show a huge event for fans, so they decided to spread out the release of their content accordingly.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on any changes to release dates, so stay tuned!

Summary

  • Damian Wayne’s inclusion in Batman: The Brave and the Bold provides an exciting opportunity to address the criticism that Batman shouldn’t have brought kids into his crime-fighting mission.
  • The decision to have Damian as Robin implies that Batman’s previous sidekicks and their complex relationships will be explored in the movie, allowing for a deeper examination of the complex sidekick/soldier/son dynamic.
  • Damian Wayne’s unique backstory as a genetically grown warrior and assassin adds an interesting layer to his relationship with Batman, as the Dark Knight will likely attempt to guide and bond with his son in the midst of their crime-fighting adventures.

The inclusion of Damian Wayne in the DCU’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold will provide an exciting opportunity to explore a major Robin criticism that’s plagued all of the Dark Knight’s sidekicks. Both in the real world and within the comics’ DC Universe, it’s been argued that Batman shouldn’t have brought kids into his crusade against the criminal elements running rampant in Gotham City. However, Damian Wayne will likely serve as a dynamic lens from which to examine this criticism on the big screen.

As confirmed by new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran during their announcement covering their vision for a new DCU with a slate of all-new projects, Batman: The Brave and the Bold was teased, set to feature a new version of Batman within this greater universe in the works. However, it was also revealed that Bruce Wayne’s biological son Damian will star in the movie as well, meeting his father for the first time as the two grapple to become a Dynamic Duo. As such, the specific decision to debut Damian as Robin is a very exciting opportunity considering Batman’s previous sidekicks in the DC canon.

The DCU’s Robin Choice Means It Has To Deal With Batman’s Oldest Sidekick Criticism

In the original DC Comics, Batman had three Robins before his son Damian took on the mantle (four if you include Stephanie Brown’s brief tenure as Robin preceding her current role as an additional Batgirl). To that end, each of these past and current sidekicks is still alive and should presumably be in the new DCU as well. Dick Grayson’s Robin became the massively popular Nightwing, Jason Todd was murdered by Joker but was later resurrected as the vigilante Red Hood, and Tim Drake is a secondary Robin in the DC mythos (though his codename has changed from time to time).

Having brought a handful of young men (and women) into his crusade, the classic criticism and accusation has been that Batman recruits child soldiers in his ongoing war in Gotham. To that end, this is a concept Batman himself has struggled with from time to time on the page, though the real reasoning is far more complex. In truth, each Robin needed guidance and someone to care for them, and each came to be known as one of Bruce Wayne’s children long before his biological son Damian. All of Batman’s sidekicks are loved and never viewed as expendable.

Batman never intended to have any sidekicks, though Dick Grayson’s discovery of the Batcave set everything in motion with Bruce seeing his own path as a means to help his charges face their own darkness, extensively training and arming each to fulfill their similar desires for justice. None were ever forced to join Batman, rather it was a choice they each made on their own. As such, the decision to have Damian in Brave and the Bold implies that Batman’s previous Robins and history will be established as well, meaning that the DCU can delve into this complex sidekick/soldier/son dynamic in ways the movies never have.

Why Damian Wayne’s Robin Story Is So Different

DAMIAN WAYNE ROBIN COSTUME 2

What will also be interesting is Damian Wayne’s particular backstory before first meeting his father at the age of 10 and becoming his new Robin. In the original comics, Damian’s birth was unknown to Batman as he was genetically grown in an artificial womb to be the perfect warrior, using a combination of Bruce’s stolen DNA and Damian’s mother Talia al Ghul, daughter of one of Batman’s greatest teachers and rivals Ra’s al Ghul. The original intention was for Damian to one day take Ra’s’ place leading the League of Shadows.

Assuming Damian’s origins in Batman: The Brave and the Bold follow the comics, Damian will already be pre-trained as a soldier and deadly assassin. This should create the need for Batman to guide Damian as his son, trying to bond with him as his father. As such, Damian can certainly be that interesting lens from which to break down the aforementioned sidekick criticism on the screen that’s plagued Batman and Robin for decades.

Available for camera-equipped mobiles and tablets, the free game challenges players to locate AR Pikmin in their home or immediate surrounding.

Depending on the time of day, players will be able to find different types of Pikmin. Once found, the plant-like creatures can be plucked from the ground with a swipe of a finger and can then be followed as they retrieve different ‘treasures’ located nearby.

According to Nintendo Life, Pikmin Finder was released to coincide with Nintendo Live in Seattle and it was geared toward those attending the event.

Pikmin 4 was released for Switch in July and a demo is available on the Nintendo eShop.

VGC’s Pikmin 4 review called the franchise’s first mainline instalment in a decade “a smart and content-packed refinement of one of Nintendo’s most underrated series”, although it added that “long-time fans may be put off by how long its generous campaign takes to get going”.

Asked if it would be possible to not make fans wait so long for the next entry in the series, Pikmin 4 producer Takashi Tezuka recently told Eurogamer: “I think that would be best as well. We’ll try not to let everyone wait.”
