Like the Princess of Wales, Meghan Markle—the Duchess of Sussex—has often worn jewelry that pays tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. When Prince Harry designed her engagement ring, for example, he included two diamonds from his mother’s personal collection, alongside a larger diamond sourced from Botswana.

Since then, the Duchess has sported a number of pieces that previously belonged to Diana, including a dazzling aquamarine ring by Asprey that she wore for her wedding reception and, more recently, to receive the Ripple of Hope Award, presented by the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights non-profit organisation.

Below, see five poignant pieces from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection that Meghan Markle has worn over the years.

“I also want to play John Candy,” Barrymore told longtime co-star Adam Sandler on her talk show.

Drew Barrymore may be reuniting with Cameron Diaz onscreen.

The daytime talk show host told her longtime friend and co-star Adam Sandler that she has been discussing a “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” remake with Diaz. And while Barrymore has her sights set on playing the role of an overbearing salesman originated by late star John Candy, the Steve Martin marketing executive character is still up for grabs between Diaz and Sandler.

“Her and I did discuss remaking ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,’ and then I was like, ‘Well you know Adam and I talk about that,’” Barrymore recalled telling Diaz during the “Drew Barrymore Show” via Entertainment Weekly. “Well, I also want to play John Candy.”

“You could do a good Candy,” Sandler responded. “You know who could do Candy the best? [Chris] Farley. He would walk around the office and say lines from ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.’”

The 1987 film directed by John Hughes centered on two businessmen trying to make it back home in time for Thanksgiving. Barrymore starred opposite Sandler in three films: “The Wedding Singer,” “50 First Dates,” and “Blended.” Similarly, Barrymore and Diaz co-starred in the 2000 “Charlie’s Angels” film and its 2003 sequel “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.”

After retiring from acting in 2014, Diaz is set to make her big screen return with the fittingly-titled upcoming Netflix film “Back in Action” with fellow “Annie” alum Jamie Foxx.

An audio snippet captured Diaz telling Foxx she is “so anxious” about coming back to acting. “I’m like pacing the room,” Diaz says. “I feel excited, but I don’t know how to do this, you know?”

Netflix posted on Twitter: “Cameron Diaz is officially un-retiring!! She will star with Jamie Foxx in a new Netflix movie — and we have an unexpected person to thank for getting her back in action…”

Diaz previously spoke out about her career in Hollywood earlier this year, telling “RuPaul’s Drag Race” judge Michelle Visage on the podcast “Rule Breakers” that she had to reflect on the “trap of it all.”

“Fame is very infantilizing,” the “Mask” star said. “It’s very much about keeping somebody coddled in a state of like, we see a little child and think, ‘It’s so cute, I want it to always be cute, and if I keep it cute by always treating it cute, maybe it’ll stay cute forever.’ And that’s how people treat you.”

Will viewers be swept up into the love story in the George & Tammy TV show on Showtime? As we all know, Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like George & Tammy is cancelled or renewed for season two (in this case, the show is a limited series). Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustrated when their viewing habits and opinions aren’t considered, we invite you to rate all of the first season episodes of George & Tammy here.

A Showtime musical drama series, the George & Tammy TV show stars Jessica Chastain, Michael Shannon, Steve Zahn, Kelly McCormack, Walton Goggins, Pat Healy, David Wilson Barnes, and Katy Mixon. The story revolves around the lives of country music legends Tammy Wynette and George Jones. A power couple in the industry, Wynette and Jones had a complicated-but-enduring relationship that inspired some of the most iconic music of all time. Known as the “First Lady of Country Music,” Wynette’s most successful song “Stand by Your Man” remains one of the most iconic and best-selling country singles by a female artist. George Jones’ song “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” is still widely called the greatest country song of all time. With over 30 number one country songs between them, their legacy, both musically and romantically, remains one of the greatest love stories ever told.

What do you think? Which season one episodes of the George & Tammy TV series do you rate as wonderful, terrible, or somewhere between? Do you think that Showtime should make more than six episodes of this show?

Check out our status sheets to track new TV series pickups, renewals, and cancellations. You can find lists of cancelled shows here.

NOW ON NETFLIX! Alert the authorities, as Dominican director Ivan Herrera is smuggling a family drama hidden inside his crime thriller Bantú Mama. Written by Herrera and star Clarisse Albrecht, the film is about Emma (Albrecht), a French woman of Cameroonian descent seemingly on vacation at a tropical resort. She secretly accepts some drug-laced luggage but gets busted by customs in the Dominican Republic.

After a daring escape, Emma makes her way to Santo Domingo, the most dangerous neighborhood on the island. She is rescued by a pack of children who hide her from the police. The three kids live in an abandoned dwelling and are the streetwise little girl T.I.N.A. (Scarlet Reyes), the older boy $hulo (Arturo Perez), and the younger Cuki (Euris Javiel). While $hulo gets deeper into the gang life that rules the streets, Emma becomes a surrogate parent to the kids. Little Cuki is fascinated with her and her ties to the Bantu tribe, while T.I.N.A. notices Emma’s positive influence on him. Meanwhile, the police hunt the crime-infested district for Emma, who sees danger rising on the horizon.

Herrera grew up in Santo Domingo and shows it to us inside and out. The slum landscapes are shot masterfully by Sebastian Cabrera Chelin. You can feel the floors crumbling beneath the rickety favelas stacked one on top of the other. This increases the immediacy the audience feels inside the rush of the gangster life portrayed. The architecture of dilapidation the director submerges you into is painstakingly immense.

“…gets deeper into the gang life that rules the streets, Emma becomes a surrogate parent to the kids.”

Bantú Mama is also engaging due to its top-class performances. Albrecht does an excellent job of presenting a very complex and imperfect person. She makes you feel all the corners Emma finds herself backed into. The child actors turn in some phenomenal work. Perez only hints at the child still left when he acts hard. His acceptance of his dead-end destiny is heartbreaking. Javiel is bubbling with wonder despite the downward pressures of poverty. Reyes knocks down all her bowling pins. She is a genuine star, a tough girl for the new century. The family drama at the heart of this film is throbbingly strong thanks to the cast.

The only major gaping flaw is the meandering first ten minutes before the drugs come out. Now, I respect Herrera’s intentions, as seeing Albrecht get ready and hit the resort as a normal vacationer lets us get to bond with her character without judgment. However, we are left without a reason to keep watching unless we dig watching strangers on holiday. In the age of streaming, this is potentially deadly. If this was being broadcast on T.V., then one may flip through channels and then come back to it when the story finally begins. With streaming, chances are anyone who leaves during this long ramp up will not come back. Such a shame, as once we get to the drugs, we are off to the races at a breakneck pace.

Also, why the long build-up when the premise is already publicized? We don’t bond with Emma until she is in trouble for smuggling drugs anyway. While it may sound crass to suggest altering your artistic vision to the demands of how the film is distributed, Bantú Mama provides ample evidence as to why that is a good idea. Also, a few more mishaps along the way to the conclusion may have rounded out the narrative better, which feels a little rushed at 76 minutes. Still, this is a wild ride along the razor’s edge that may drop out from under you at any moment.

German police raid ‘far-right terror group that planned to attack parliament and overthrow the government in deadly coup’ and arrest 25 people including a ‘PRINCE’

  • 3,000 German officers raided 130 locations in 11 of country’s 16 states today and arrested 25 people accused of plotting a violent coup
  • Prince Heinrich XIII, who may claim descent from a now-abolished German monarchical line, was among those detained
  • Prosecutors say the group planned to overthrow the government and re-establish the German Reich under a monarchy

Police have today carried out sweeping raids against an alleged far-right terror group which aimed to overthrow the German government in a violent coup.

Raids took place in 11 of Germany’s 16 states with 3,000 officers searching 130 sites including a forest palace in the state of Thuringia and arresting 25 people including a 71-year-old man who styles himself as Prince Heinrich XIII.

Cops also descended on the barracks of Germany’s special forces unit KSK, local media said, along with properties in neighbouring Austria and Italy.

Prosecutors say the plotters belonged to various far-right movements allied under the Reichsbürger banner, which rejects the modern German state in favour of the Reich which existed from 1871 to 1918.

German police today carried out sweeping raids across much of the country targeting an alleged far-right group accused of plotting to overthrow the government

The men are accused of plotting a violent overthrow of the current government in order to establish a Principality ruled by a monarchy and divided into ministries.

Coup plotters had already selected who would be in charge of the various ministries, Bild reports, and had acquired a number of legally-purchased guns.

Former soldiers of the Bundeswehr were involved in the plans, Bild adds, which have been ongoing since at least November 2021.

Suspects were arrested in the German states of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Thuringia as well as in Austria and Italy.

Prosecutors said 22 German citizens were detained on suspicion of ‘membership in a terrorist organization.’

Three other people, including a Russian citizen, are suspected of supporting the organization, they said.

Prosecutors said that one person was detained in the Austrian town of Kitzbuehel and another in the Italian city of Perugia.

Heinrich XIII is accused of being a ringleader of the plot alongside a man named only as Rüdiger v. P. and a former AfD member of the Bundestag and Berlin judge Birgit M.-W., 58.

25 people were arrested including Prince Heinrich XIII, who may claim descent from a now-abolished German monarchical line

Though exact details are unclear, it appears the arrested Prince Heinrich may claim descent from the House of Reuss which existed in Germany from the 11th century until the abolition of the monarchy in 1918.

All male descendants of this house were named Heinrich after Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor, to whom they owed their titles and lands.

Each Heinrich was given a number after their name which went from 1 to 100 and then restarted from the beginning – meaning that, though there have been many Heinrichs through history, it is possible a Heinrich XIII would be alive today.

In 1778 Heinrich XI was elevated to princely status, after which all of his male heirs also used the title.

The house maintained lands in the modern-day state of Thuringa, with German press saying police raided a palace in the same state today.

Matt Lucas just confirmed that he is leaving Great British Bake Off after three seasons as a presenter.

In a statement posted on social media, Lucas revealed the reason why he was exiting the Channel 4 competition.

“Farewell Bake Off! It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers, but it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects,” read the statement Lucas shared on Twitter. “So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.”

Lucas continued, “I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Neolipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent.”

The Little Britain and Bridesmaids alum had well wishes for the future presenter that takes the vacant spot and he said he couldn’t “wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!”

Lucas joined the Bake Off world in Season 11 taking over Sandi Toksvig’s spot next to Noel Fielding. After Lucas made his announcement, Fielding shared that he was “sad” his co-presenter was leaving the show.

“Farewell buddy thank you for 3 amazing years. I will really miss your spark and huge smile in the tent and I will miss your kindness as a person and to all the bakers,” Fielding shared on Instagram. “I will miss your sense of the absurd and your silliness. I will miss all the times the four of us giggled together. I will miss your ability to turn into a fully formed character at the drop of a hat. I will miss you pretending to be Boris Johnson singing David Bowie songs and I will miss your upbeat nature and positive vibes.”

Fielding wished Lucas luck on his “next adventure” and said he “looked forward to watching as a fan.”

As of now, Channel 4 has not announced if Great British Bake Off will replace Lucas with another host. The competition show airs in the U.S. on Netflix as The Great British Baking Show.

BuzzFeed is laying off around 12 percent of its workforce — about 182 of 1,522 staffers — as the company’s revenue has been hit by “worsening macroeconomic conditions” and the “ongoing audience shift to vertical video,” CEO Jonah Peretti told staff on Tuesday.

Restructuring costs stemming from the mass layoffs will amount to upwards of $12 million, the company disclosed in an SEC filing, with most of those charges being paid by the end of the first quarter next year. The layoffs will impact the sales, tech, production and content divisions of BuzzFeed and Complex, though there are no cuts happening to BuzzFeed News, HuffPost and Tasty, a company spokesperson told THR.

“Our revenues are being impacted by a combination of worsening macroeconomic conditions, and the ongoing audience shift to vertical video, which is still developing from a monetization standpoint,” Peretti wrote in a memo to staff. “That requires us to lower our costs. Unfortunately, reducing our workforce is an essential part of cost cutting. Staff salaries are the single largest cost at the company.”

Moving forward, Peretti said the company will be prioritizing “areas that will drive growth, and shifting away from areas with less audience engagement.” He also pointed to creating a more “robust creator business,” though didn’t share specifics.

BuzzFeed has already laid off staff earlier this year, with some of those cuts and voluntary buyouts impacting the BuzzFeed News division. As of this August, the company disclosed $5.3 million in restructuring fees stemming from the staffing changes. In its Q3 earnings report, BuzzFeed noted a continued decline in audience engagement with its content.

“I know that there’s nothing I can write here to make this easier for anyone losing their job today. While I believe in the strategy we’re pursuing, and know it’s necessary to navigate the challenging year ahead, that’s no comfort if you are directly affected,” Peretti wrote.

YouTube is starting to roll out its own custom emotes. The Twitch-like emotes, dubbed YouTube Emotes, can be used across YouTube in comment sections and during live chats, though the platform previously allowed individual streamers to offer their own reactions and emotes. YouTube’s own initial emotes are focused on gaming, but there will be more over time.

You’ll now see a list of YouTube emotes when you open YouTube’s emoji picker, and they’ll appear below a channel’s own existing custom emotes. Much like Twitch’s default system-wide emotes, YouTube’s ones also have specific names for autocomplete so you quickly type “:cat-orange-whistling:” for example, and it will automatically fill a comment with an orange cat whistling.

Unsurprisingly, there isn’t a pogchamp emote, but YouTube hasn’t even added a default for the popular LUL Twitch emote. There are some game over, GG, and buffering ones, though.

“We’re starting with emotes created for Gaming but are working on bringing even more themes of emotes in the future, so stay tuned for emotes for even more communities!” says YouTube in a community post.

These gaming emotes were created by Abelle Hayford, Guy Field, and Yujin Won, so it’s reasonable to assume with this creator focus we’ll likely see further YouTube Emotes from independent artists in the future.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

It’s a big night for democracy, and I’m not just talking about the Senate run-off race in Georgia. Tonight is also the 48th People’s Choice Awards, the one awards show where all the winners are selected by we, the people. If only the Founding Fathers could see us now!

Actors, musicians, and influencers alike celebrated the occasion in fine fashion, hitting the red carpet at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica in their most People-pleasing ensembles—from Shania Twain’s leopard print to Laverne Cox’s botanical ball gown, celebrities came to slay.

Spoiler alert: A few of this year’s honorees have already been announced, including Ryan Reynolds, who will receive the people’s icon award, Lizzo, who will receive the people’s champion award, and Shania Twain, who will receive the music icon award. Kenan Thompson, fresh off his Emmys hosting gig back in September, will host the People’s Choice Awards for the second year in a row.

Keep scrolling for all the best looks from the red carpet.

It's a big night for democracy, and

This week is the 6 year anniversary of the podcast starting. For some reason, I forgot to mention that in the podcast today. Dec. 4th, 2016 is when I began this journey. It’s crazy to think here’s where we are now. And for the first time in 6 years, I did something today I’ve never done before. It happened sort of out of necessity because my original podcast guest had some scheduling issues, and then when I tried to get one of the mainstays on yesterday on short notice, nobody could do it. So I decided to do a “Best Of” episode, which is a first. They are from 3 of the last 5 podcasts I’ve done in case you missed them, but you will hear some excerpts from the Taylor Mack interview from Podcast #310, Ali Appleby Miss Dallas Teen USA from Podcast #312, and from Jacqueline Trumbull from last weeks pod. Even though this pod came from necessity, I think it’s something I’d do in the future to get people caught up on some important pods I think they may have missed. So if you already listened to these pods when they aired, thank you. If not, a perfect way to hear some of the topics I thought were important to hear again. Enjoy…

Jane Schoenbrun’s debut narrative feature, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, is an entrancing horror film that shirks traditional three-act structure in favor of bold, unprecedented cinematic language and a deep fascination with its central character, Casey, who lives the majority of her teenage life in her room, posting vlogs as part of a sinister and mysterious online trend called the “World’s Fair Challenge.” The writer-director’s curiosity about internet subcultures stems from their own nonbinary and trans identities, growing up and looking to the computer as an outlet to express themselves authentically.

“People were collaborating in this very decentralized way to create new narratives that really only could have been created on the internet,” explains Schoenbrun, referring to different dark online horror characters and stories shared widely online that helped inspire their film. “It really resonated and reminded me of something I went looking for online in my own youth, which was an effort to remove myself from my body and my identity and exist in a space where I could express myself creatively, and perhaps even explore myself personally, outside of ‘the real world.’ ”

Schoenbrun says that coming out as trans allowed them to finally tell the stories they’d had locked away inside their subconscious. “I don’t think that I had a creative burst after coming out,” they muse. “I think that I worked up the courage to share my inner world with the outer world, which was very hard for me to do pre-transition.”

Shame, both internal and external since childhood, worked as an obstacle to creativity for Schoenbrun before this prolific new phase of their career: “I wasn’t being encouraged to express myself. And so you learn to put it away, and you learn to log online and write stories on the internet, disconnected from your real life, and you learn, basically, to be ashamed. The process of starting to put language to who I was, and to become who I needed to be, was a process of unraveling my relationship to that shame and overcoming it. I think that’s what allowed me to make a movie like this one, make a movie like my next one, and make all of the things that I’m going to make. These were the stories that I always wanted and needed to tell. And they were always in there. They were just lodged behind internalized transphobia.”

World’s Fair is the first in a planned body of work Schoenbrun dubs “The Screen Trilogy,” to be followed by their upcoming A24 thriller I Saw the TV Glow, starring an ensemble cast including Phoebe Bridgers and Danielle Deadwyler, and a television project titled Public Access Afterworld.

“This passage from living my life as a spectator of the world, in the wrong body and identity, and slowly becoming myself and an artist, going from somebody who, like Casey in World’s Fair, spends all of her time staring at a screen, to somebody who is, in some ways, entering the screen — that is, to me, a really potent metaphor for transition and how it’s felt,” Schoenbrun explains. “Similarly, I just find the glow of a screen to be appealing. It’s something that I very naturally gravitate toward, in the way that David Cronenberg gravitates toward body horror or Christopher Nolan gravitates toward super-confusing time [plots].”

BLONDE

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: Netflix

Director: Andrew Dominik

Cast: Ana de Armas, Lily Fisher, Julianne Nicholson, Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale

Why We’re Excited: “I guess you’re supposed to get used to it. But I can’t face doing another scene with Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn doesn’t exist. Marilyn Monroe only exists on the screen.” The second feature adaptation based on Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel, writer-director Andrew Dominik’s rendition of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe’s storied life stars Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas (No Time to Die, Knives Out). Mostly filmed in B&W and running at nearly three hours, the biopic has been met with polarizing reviews despite de Armas’ widely acclaimed performance, which garnered the film a 14-minute standing ovation when it premiered at Cannes this past May. Film Independent members on the team include producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.

SELENA GOMEZ: MY MIND & ME

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: Apple TV+

Director: Alek Keshishian

Why We’re Excited: “Just be who you are, Selena. No one cares about what you’re doing, it’s about who I am, being OK with where I am. I am grateful to be alive,” the 30-year-old singer and actress Selena Gomez (Hulu’s hit series Only Murders in the Building) utters at one point in the film. Written by writer-director Keshishian (Madonna: Truth or Dare) and Paul Marchand (Jaco, Persimmon Ridge: An American Landscape), the feature documentary chronicles Gomez’s struggles during the 6-year period from 2015 onward, following her diagnosis of lupus and bipolar disorder. Premiering as the opening night film of the 2022 AFI Fest, the film’s song ‘My Mind & Me’ by Gomez was released as a single after the film’s debut.

ARGENTINA, 1985

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: Amazon Prime

Director: Santiago Mitre

Cast: Ricardo Darín, Peter Lanzani, Alejandra Flechner, and Norman Briski

Why We’re Excited: Selected as Argentina’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the upcoming Oscars, co-writer/director Santiago Mitre’s historical drama is based on the IRL 1985 Trial of the Juntas, the only large-scale judicial trial against a country’s own former dictator government – the de facto military government in power in Argentina from 1976 – 1983. Under the first elected government after democracy was restored in 1983, President Raúl Alfonsín’s administration prosecuted the ringleaders of the bloodiest dictatorship in the nation’s history, during which thousands were tortured, killed, or otherwise never heard from again, known as “desaparecidos,” referring to those who were victims of “forced disappearance.”

NANNY

When You Can Watch: December 16

Where You Can Watch: Amazon Prime

Director: Nikyatsu Jusu

Cast: Anna Diop, Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls, Morgan Spector

Why We’re Excited: One of three nominees for the ‘Someone to Watch’ Award in the upcoming Spirit Awards, Sierra-Leonean-American director and 2013 Fast Track Fellow Jusu’s directorial debut is the first horror film to ever win the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival when it competed at the festival earlier this year. Anna Diop (Us, Bosch, Quantico) is Aisha, an undocumented Senegalese immigrant nanny for a couple in the Upper East Side of New York – played by Monaghan (Mission: Impossible III and Netflix’s slow burn thriller Messiah) and Spector (HBO’s The Gilded Age and The Plot Against America). As she works hard to build her life Stateside so that she can one day bring her child to the United States, an old secret comes back to haunt her and threatens to unravel the American Dream she so desperately needs. Producer Nikkia Moulterie is also a Fellow from the 2013’s Fast Track program. Producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg is a Film Independent member.

THE TERRITORY

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: Disney+

Directors: Alex Pritz

Why We’re Excited: Premiering at Sundance earlier this year, the National Geographic documentary follows 18-year-old Indigenous leader Bitaté of the Uru-eu-wau-wau community, who is putting up an intrepid fight against agricultural and colonization exploits in the Amazon rainforest that threatens their way of life. With vérité footage shot in Brazil from 2018 to 2020, director Alex Pritz’s (DP on The First Wave) feature directorial debut was the only film that won both the Audience Award and the Special Jury Award at Sundance, garnering praise from audiences and critics alike. “The film is grimly depressing in places. I covered my eyes during Google Earth time-lapse sequences showing the pace of deforestation in the Amazon; the violence of it is too much,” The Guardian’s critic Cath Clarke writes. Film Independent affiliated members of the production team include Executive Producer Alexandra Johnes (Fellow of the 2015 Fast Track program) and Executive Producer Carolyn Bernstein (Film Independent member).

RETROGRADE

When You Can Watch: December 9

Where You Can Watch: Disney+ and Hulu (December 11)

Director: Matthew Heineman

Why We’re Excited: Yet another National Geographic doc available on Disney+, Emmy-winning filmmaker Heineman’s (City of Ghosts, Cartel Land) crushing yet captivating film captures one of the most heartrending military withdrawals in modern history, chronicling the last nine months of America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan that ended with a tumultuous and deadly withdrawal of coalition forces. Told from the POV of the last Green Berets supporting the Afghan army, the film is bookended by the now-infamous harrowing footage of the chaos at the Kabul airport in the last days of August 2021, as desperate Afghans literally did everything possible – including clinging onto the outside of a U.S. Army cargo plane taxiing the runway – to escape before the country fell under Taliban rule once more. Film Independent member Carolyn Bernstein is an Executive Producer on the project.

BAD AXE

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: VOD

Director: David Siev

Why We’re Excited: Director David Siez’s feature debut from IFC Films is an intimate portrait of a struggling Asian-American family in rural Michigan. Amidst the converging quandaries of the COVID-19 pandemic that crushed the global economy and the volatile racial tensions that permeated much of 2020, the family fights to keep their restaurant alive. “The most essential film yet made about this era is David Siev’s moving and triumphant “Bad Axe,” a film that has already won awards on the fest circuit and is now getting its limited theatrical release. I have thought about this movie more than any other this year,” writes movie critic Brian Tallerico of rogerebert.com. Producer Diane Moy Quon is a Fellow of the 2017 Documentary Lab program.

SR.

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: Netflix

Director: Chris Smith

Why We’re Excited: The latest offering from two-time Spirit Awards nominee Chris Smith (The Pool, American Job) is a tenderhearted look at the father-son relationship between actor Robert Downey Jr. (Marvel Universe’s Iron Man, Tony Stark) and his own father – the filmmaking pioneer who gave us the Madison Avenue advertising satire, Putney Swope, and was part of the American New Wave in the late 1960s – the late Robert Downey, Sr. “I just remember that cacophony of creativity, but mostly laughter …. It was this idea that films kind of brought us together, and till this day, still do,” Downey, Jr. says of the emotional core to his family life growing up. Incorporating interviews from family friends including Norman Lear and Alan Arkin, the film is a moving tribute from son to father that was partly shot over Zoom during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

TO LESLIE

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: VOD

Directors: Michael Morris

Cast: Andrea Riseborough, Allison Janney, Marc Maron, Andre Royo, Owen Teague

Why We’re Excited: Garnering lead actress Riseborough (Oblivion, Birdman) a Best Lead Performance nod in the upcoming Film Independent Spirit Awards, director Morris’ (Better Call Saul, 13 Reasons Why) drama follows the titular Leslie (Riseborough) six years after she had won – and squandered – $190,000 in lottery winnings. Now a destitute and scheming alcoholic with nowhere to turn, she moves in with her estranged 21-year-old son James (Teague) but ends up stealing money from his roommate instead. Premiering this spring at SXSW, the film has garnered favorable reviews, currently standing at 98% “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. Film Independent members on the producing team include: Michael Morris, Director; Joel Baral, Co-Producer; Claude Dal Farra, Producer; Brian Keady.

**PROGRAMMER’S PICK** TURN EVERY PAGE: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBERT CARO AND ROBERT GOTTLIEB

When You Can Watch: December 30

Where You Can Watch: Theaters (Limited)

Director: Lizzie Gottlieb

Why We’re Excited: From Jenn Wilson, Film Independent Senior Programmer: “Director Lizzie Gottlieb made this documentary film about her father, the editor, Robert Gottlieb, and his longtime colleague, the writer, Robert Caro.  Caro wrote, and Gottlieb edited the 1975 Pulitzer prize-winning biography, The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York.  The two have also spent decades writing a five-volume biography of Lyndon Johnson.  Both men are in their 80s now and still chugging along on volume five of the LBJ series which, if finished, will probably represent one of the greatest achievements in biography-writing history.  Even if you’ve never heard of either man, or any of their books, this documentary is a fascinating exploration of each man and their sometimes cantankerous relationship as editor/writer.  They fight because each man is entirely dedicated to the craft they practice, and they undoubtedly have made each other’s work greater than it would have ever been without the other.  While Gottlieb has spent his life editing some of the greatest works of fiction (Catch-22), Caro has dedicated his life to documenting the little-understood but greatly feared subject of power – how someone gets it, how they wield it, and how they ultimately lose it.  Turn Every Page is not only a delightful film to watch, but also one of the most illuminating films of the year.”

Actor Bill Cosby is facing new sexual assault and battery accusations after five women filed a lawsuit Monday under New York’s new Adult Survivors Act.

Two actors who worked on The Cosby Show — Lili Bernard and Eden Tirl — are among the plaintiffs, reports ABC News. The other women listed include Jewel Gittens, Jennifer Thompson and Cindra Ladd.

The lawsuit accuses Cosby of assault, battery, infliction of emotional distress and false imprisonment. The lawsuit also names NBC, the show’s production company and where The Cosby Show was filmed, as well as Universal Media and Kaufman Astoria Studios for their apparent failure to protect the women.

Bill Cosby says he’ll never show remorse to please parole board

The five plaintiffs say Cosby, 85, took advantage of them several decades ago because they were young and vulnerable.

The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, said four of the women were allegedly abused in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

“Each plaintiff was sexually assaulted and battered by defendant Bill Cosby in the same or similar manner when he used his power, fame, and prestige, including the power, fame and prestige given to him by (the) defendants … to misuse his enormous power in such a nefarious, horrific way,” the suit states.

Bernard, who played the role of Mrs. Minifield on The Cosby Show, said Cosby drugged and raped her on two occasions in 1990 and 1991.

Tirl, who played a small role as a police officer on the show in 1989, alleges that Cosby inappropriately touched her without consent while in a dressing room.

Two of the other women, Gittens and Ladd, allege that they were drugged and raped by Cosby. Thompson alleges Cosby touched her inappropriately without her consent when she was 18.

Cosby has denied the allegations through a statement from his representatives.

“Mr. Cosby continues to vehemently deny all allegations waged against him and looks forward to defending himself in court.”

Cosby has faced dozens of similar accusations in recent years, with more than 50 women coming forward in 2014 and 2015 to say that they had been assaulted by the now-disgraced television star.

His 2018 trial marked the first major trial of the #MeToo movement. He was convicted of the sexual assault of Andrea Constand at the time and was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison. However, he was released in 2021 when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his conviction, saying his due process rights were violated.

Let’s go Rangers! Keke Palmer and her boyfriend Darius Jackson had a fun date night at Madison Square Garden to watch the New York Rangers take on the St. Louis Blues on Monday, December 5. Hot off of Keke’s debut hosting Saturday Night Live and her pregnancy announcement, the pair looked like they had a great time at the hockey game.

Keke and Darius smiled as they looked up at the scoreboard! (Michael Simon/Shutterstock)

The actress, 29, kept things low-key for the game. She sported a bright green hoodie pulled over her head, with some straight hair poking out. She also rocked a pair of square glasses and had a bag sitting on her lap. Her boyfriend sported a brown leather jacket, with the phrase “Real Ohio Player” printed on it, as well as a black beanie.

With the Rangers winning with a 6-4 score, it’s clear the pair had a great time. Darius shared a few videos from the game on his Instagram Story, including fans singing the Rangers’ signature song when the team scored. “They go up after a goal,” he wrote.

The couple attended the hockey game just days after Keke announced that she’s expecting their first child during her monologue on SNL. She playful shared the exciting news by speaking about rumors that she was having a baby. “People are in my comments saying Keke’s having a baby, Keke’s pregnant. And I want to set the record straight…I AM!” she said, before ripping open her jacket and showing her baby bump.

After the show aired, Keke took to Instagram to speak about what an amazing experience it was and reflected on how happy she was to get to announce her pregnancy on the comedy show in her post. “How cool, my baby and I are already doing it all together,” she wrote, before extending many thanks, ultimately leading to Darius. “Thank you to my other half [Darius] for giving me the things that only true unity can bring. Love is all we have isn’t it, you do nothing in this world alone and trust me, I am not alone! Very grateful.”

While it’s not clear exactly how long Darius and Keke have been together, the pair did go Instagram Official in August 2021, when Darius spoke about how much he loves the actress. “I’m glad we were able to help each other throughout our lowest of times & show one another that what we are bringing to the table is everything that we got,” he wrote.

Google has introduced “continuous scrolling” for the desktop version of its search results for some users.

This means that when users reach the bottom of a search results page, they will now be able to see the equivalent of up to six pages of results before they get presented with a “More” button.

The move follows Google’s introduction of the feature for mobile versions of its search engine in October 2022, though search results were capped at four pages for these versions.

Why the move?

This brings Google’s search offering more in line with what’s on offer from many popular social media apps such as Instagram and Facebook for example, which let users scroll down continuously for a long time before asking them to load up a new page.

Adding some context to the update, Google has said in a previous blog (opens in new tab) that “most people who want additional information tend to browse up to four pages of search results”.

Google did not mention when the feature is set to be rolled out internationally.

This is unlikely to be the last time we see significant search engine updates from Google in the near future.

The search giant recently set out ambitious plans to overhaul the formatting of its search engine. Talking to the press including TechRadar Pro at its Google Search On event, Google’s VP of Engineering, Rajan Patel outlined plans that would see video and picture results integrated more closely into search results.

The exec said the plans will help “organize results to better reflect the way people explore topics”.

“Daisy Jones & the Six” first-look photos are here via Vanity Fair along with the show’s premiere date: March 3, 2023.

The adaptation from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s wildly popular historical fiction novel of the same name will go to Amazon Prime Video, following the rise and fall of a fictional ’70s band in the guise of Fleetwood Mac. The oral history is told in interviews.

Riley Keough will star as the titular lead singer of the band. Other stars appearing include Sam Claflin as Billy Dunne, Suki Waterhouse as Karen, Sebastian Chacon as Warren, Josh Whitehouse as Eddie and Will Harrison as Graham. Timothy Olyphant will portray Rod Reyes, Tom Wright will play Teddy Price and Nabiyah Be will portray Simone Jackson.

The timeline will include the band’s start, heyday and the characters aged 20 years following the band’s success.

Scott Neustadter (“The Fault in Our Stars, The Spectacular Now”) and Lauren Levy Neustadter, head of film and television at Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine, will produce.

Reese Witherspoon’s book club selected “Daisy Jones & the Six,” published in March 2019, as its Feb. 2019 monthly selection.

Other book adaptations that stemmed from Reese’s Book Club include Netflix’s limited series adaptation of Tembi Locke’s “From Scratch,” Hulu’s television show adaptation of Celeste Ng’s “Little Fires Everywhere,” the theatrical release of Delia Owens’ “Where the Crawdads Sing” starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Harris Dickerson and Taylor John Smith.

“I flipped for it, and really just sort of fell in love with the whole thing,” said Scott, who received a pre-publication manuscript of Reid’s bestselling novel in 2017. “Transporting to the 1970s Laurel Canyon music scene was, like, the greatest gift I could imagine.”

Ludo

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Rahul Saraf, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Inayat Verma, Asha Negi

Director: Anurag Basu

I like how Anurag Basu confuses the audience between reality and fiction. Many of you would contest this but he was at his creative best in Jagga Jasoos, a film where the line between imaginative and realistic storytelling was so blurred that it became difficult for the viewer to chaff out how much of Jagga’s story should be taken seriously. His frames, his understanding of movements and aesthetics, everything displayed his strengths, unique narration techniques and subtlety as a creator who wouldn’t like to be confined in a particular zone or genre.

He gives a glimpse of the same unbound energy in Ludo, which is both old school and modern at the same time. It uses two ‘sutradhars’, Basu himself and Rahul Bagga, and then deliberately doesn’t connect all the dots. In between, we meet a rowdy Bittu (Abhishek Bachchan), a moony-eyed lover Aalu (Rajkummar Rao), a hopeless romantic Aakash (Aditya Roy Kapur), a lonely youngster Rahul (Rohit Saraf) and a jovial yet hardcore criminal Sattu (Pankaj Tripathi).

These male characters have their counterparts in Asha (Asha Negi), Pinky (Fatima Sana Sheikh), Shruti (Sanya Malhotra), Shreeja (Pearley Maaney) and Kutty (Shalini).

Read: Serious Men Movie Review

Read: Laxmii Movie Review

It might appear like a chaotic story at the first glance but you would soon start finding a method to the madness. Though it never tries to look serious or carrying a meaning deeper than what’s right in front of the eyes, some references to the mythological texts force you to take Basu as a filmmaker whose whimsical approach might not be just whimsical after all. If you ask me, I will tell you that this is what makes Ludo a fun watch. It’s not just the unpredictability of situation but a methodical approach to create chaos which is so engaging that you start focussing on performances rather than their individual stories.

Here, you would love Pankaj Tripathi’s ‘desi’ gangster act. He is nuanced, restrained and hilarious. During a hospital scene, Tripathi meets a person who is mistakenly arrested for Tripathi’s crime. He keeps on laughing and never tells the other person truth. His range is quite visible even in a simple scene.

The other notable performance is by Rajkummar Rao, a Mithun Chakraborty fan who automatically begins dancing when stressed. He is lovable, charming and not so subtle. His honesty is palpable. A hint of similar traits can be found in Rohit Saraf’s disillusioned Rahul Awasthi.

Female characters are mostly in supportive roles except Sanya Malhotra who takes the lead in her segment. She is effervescent and pleasant.

But as I said earlier, Ludo is not about the individual stories but the aftertaste they leave. There, it’s a feel-good film which will make you laugh and inspire to not take life too seriously. Another good work from Anurag Basu’s repertoire.

Rating: 3/5

Netflix said, American Primeval, a limited drama set to star Taylor Kitsch and from exec producers Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) and Eric Newman (Narcos) has received a six-episode, straight-to-series order for the streaming service. Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, The Terminal List, Waco, and upcoming Netflix limited series Painkiller, set to debut in 2023), will play Isaac, a traumatized man struggling to overcome his demons and find a reason to live in this brutal and punishing world.

American Primeval is a raw, adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West. The violent collisions of cultures, religions and communities as men and women fight and die for control of this new world – for a land they truly believe is their destiny. The ensemble tells a story of the sacrifice all must pay when they choose to enter a lawless and untamed wilderness.

“We are very appreciative that Netflix is trusting us to take a big swing with American Primeval. I’m looking forward to taking viewers into the most dynamic, intense, and heart pounding survival tale humanly possible,” said Berg. “We are going into the belly of the beast. Cheers to Ted, Bela, Peter and the entire Netflix team for the support!”

Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, US and Canada, Netflix said that this show is the first of it’s kind for the service, adding  “American Primeval is a portrait of the American West unlike any other – raw, thrilling, action-driven and brought to life by a tapestry of emotionally compelling characters led by the talented Taylor Kitsch,” said Friedlander. “We’re excited to explore new depths of this genre as we grow our creative partnership with the extraordinary Pete Berg at the helm backed by the deft storytelling vision from Eric Newman and Mark L. Smith.”

Paramount+ has given the greenlight to a second season of Tulsa King.

The crime drama, created by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) and Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos) stars Sylvester Stallone in his first leading role in a scripted television series. Stallone plays Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York Mafia capo who is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to set up criminal operations for the mob. The series has been a breakout hit for Paramount Network.

According to the company, Tulsa King’s linear preview on Paramount Network makes it the biggest new series premiere of 2022 across cable with 3.7 million viewers, besting HBO’s House of The Dragon and the Hulu series The Old Man.

“With the combination of the incomparable Sylvester Stallone and Taylor Sheridan’s darkly comedic twist on the beloved mobster genre, we have found our latest hit in Tulsa King,” Tanya Giles, chief programming officer, Paramount Streaming, said in a statement. “The series’ premiere on Paramount+ helped drive a record sign-up day fueled by our unique ability as Paramount Global to tap into Paramount Network’s incredible Yellowstone audience.”

Tulsa King is also executive produced by Stallone, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Allen Coulter and Braden Aftergood. The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios.

Sure, time heals all wounds — but The Resident‘s Kyle Nevin might need an eternity to make things right with his former son-in-law.

TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at tonight’s fall finale of the Fox drama (8/7c), in which Corbin Bernsen reprises his role as the late Nic Nevin’s father. We last saw Kyle in the harrowing Season 5 episode “The Long and Winding Road,” where Nic ultimately died of a head injury, and a heartbroken Kyle blamed Conrad for not trying harder to save Nic.

As the clip above confirms, Kyle and Conrad haven’t had any contact since that day, and Kyle’s demeanor upon arriving to Chastain as a patient indicates he has no interest in a reconciliation.

Bernsen’s return to The Resident comes as something of a surprise, as series co-creator Amy Holden Jones told TVLine earlier this fall that the actor wouldn’t appear in Season 6. “It’s not the story of this season, partly because of [Bernsen’s] availability,” she said at the time. “But he’s still Gigi’s grandfather, so yes, I would like to bring him back. I love the character.” (And we welcome this plot twist!)

Elsewhere in the fall finale, Billie advises her patient against surgery, but the patient’s family ignores her recommendation, while Cade musters up the courage to confront Ian about his addiction, and Leela grows concerned about Padma. Press PLAY above to watch our sneak peek, then drop a comment with your thoughts!

Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning author, Saul Bellow, transformed modern literature with his prose. Grappling with the chaos of modern society and American identity, Bellow’s work often commented on what it means to be alive.

Here are 10 quotes to help you “seize the day.”

1. “Unexpected intrusions of beauty. This is what life is.”

– Saul Bellow, “Herzog”

2. “There are times when the most practical thing is to lie down.”

– Saul Bellow, “Humboldt’s Gift”

3. “The best and purest human beings, from the beginning of time, have understood that life is sacred.”

– Saul Bellow, “Mr. Sammler’s Planet”

4. “Associate with the noblest people you can find; read the best books; live with the mighty; but learn to be happy alone.”

– Saul Bellow, “Ravelstein”

5. “I feel that art has something to do with the achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos. “

– Interview excerpted in “Conversations with Saul Bellow”

6. “In an age of madness, to expect to be untouched by madness is a form of madness. But the pursuit of sanity can be a form of madness, too.”

– Saul Bellow, “Henderson The Rain King”

7. “Everybody needs his memories. They keep the wolf of insignificance from the door.”

– Saul Bellow, “Mr. Sammler’s Planet”

8. “Bringing people into the here-and-now. The real universe. That’s the present moment. The past is no good to us. The future is full of anxiety. Only the present is real – the here-and-now. Seize the day.”

– Saul Bellow, “Seize the Day”

9. “You have to fight for your life. That’s the chief condition on which you hold it.”

– Saul Bellow, “Herzog”

10. “You don’t know what you’ve got within you. A person either creates or he destroys. There is no neutrality.”

UKRAINE has successfully wiped out much of Russia’s war machine, humiliating tyrant Putin with a series of precise strikes.

While the Russian reported death toll approaches the 100,000 mark, a number of targeted attacks have taken out Putin‘s military infrastructure and civilian targets.

The Kremlin top brass expected to sweep through Ukraine in a matter of days, believing that President Zelensky would flee and the Ukrainian defence would collapse.

Instead, as the Russian invasion enters its 10th month, Putin’s army is at a standstill, and his economy is taking a pounding.

On Monday, two of Putin’s Tu-95 nuclear bombers were blown up in an attack on a high-security Russian airbase hundreds of miles from the Ukrainian border.

It is the latest sign that the war is backfiring for Russia, and that the country is itself now becoming a target for airstrikes.

How ‘critically ill’ Putin was left a twitching, bloated & unstable mess

While it seems certain the war will continue into next year, it isn’t clear how much longer the Russian resolve can hold up, as conditions for ordinary Russians worsen.

This is how Ukraine upset the odds and took the war to Russia.

The Russian death toll is approaching 100,000

WORSENING RUSSIAN MORALE

According to Ukraine, the Russian death toll since February is over 90,000.

Independent Russian media outlet iStories, quoting Kremlin sources, reported in October that at least 90,000 soldiers had either died, been severely wounded, or were not accounted for.

The Kremlin has also reportedly lost at least 5,900 armoured protected vehicles (APVs), 2,900 tanks, and 281 planes.

Additionally, over 1,900 artillery systems have been wiped out, accounting for around a third of Russia’s total stock.

Unsurprisingly, morale is at an all-time low, and reports of mutiny are growing.

Putin’s mass mobilisation efforts have only highlighted that he has to compel ordinary Russians into fighting his war, unlike the Ukrainians who have signed up willingly to defend their country.

Ukraine is being supplied by the West

BETTER SUPPLIES

A number of nations are now supplying Ukraine either directly with military equipment, or indirectly with training.

The United States has given its approval for Ukrainian pilots to be trained in using the F-15 and F-16 fighter jets.

Within the next six months, the Ukrainian air force will be flying Western fighter jets.

The UK has been leading the way in shipping equipment to Ukraine, from anti-air missiles to ammunition, while also supplying intelligence to Kyiv through the use of frequent surveillance aircraft missions.

Germany and the US are both debating whether to send tanks to Ukraine, while a number of Eastern European nations have also provided equipment to their neighbour.

On the other hand, Russia’s list of allies is increasingly shrinking.

Other than the Iranian-supplied Kamikaze drones, it is increasingly relying on out-of-date equipment.

RECLAIMING TERRITORY

Where once it looked like Ukraine could fall to Russia in days, now much of the country is back under the control of Kyiv.

A series of successful counter-strikes have seen Kharkiv in the northeast largely returned to Ukrainian hands.

This “opportunistic” assault began when Russia moved much of its forces towards Kherson in the south, exposing the eastern front.

Now Ukrainian territories proclaimed part of Russia just months ago are being abandoned by Putin’s forces.

At the time, Putin claimed that the new territories would remain Russian “forever”.

But last month, Russian troops were forced to surrender the key city of Kherson following a brutal Ukrainian onslaught.

INFRASTRUCTURE DAMAGE

Ukraine has successfully targeted a number of key pieces of Russian infrastructure, from transport links to military bases.

With the attack on the Kerch bridge in October, Putin’s flagship project linking Russia with the illegally annexed territory of Crimea was in tatters.

The Kerch bridge exploded in a mystery fireball killing three people, in a speculator blow to Putin’s war efforts and a serious lapse in Russian intel.

SYMBOLIC HUMILIATIONS

In April, Russia’s first-class missile cruiser Moskva was taken out by a surprise barrage of Neptune missiles launched from the shore in April killing 40 sailors and wounding 200.

The ship – which was thought to be untouchable – had played a deadly role in the war by bombarding Ukrainian towns from positions at sea before it was sunk, near Snake Island.

Humiliating footage surfaced appearing to show the 611ft ship Moskva with smoke pouring from it and a rescue tug boat nearby.

The Moskva had taken on legendary status among Ukraine’s defenders after a band of outgunned border guards said “Russian warship, go f*** yourself!” when it ordered them to surrender.

One of the greatest surprises of the war has been Russia’s failure to achieve air superiority over Ukraine.

A mix of untrained pilots, poor communication channel and intel, and deadly Western surface-to-air missile batteries saw Russian plans blown out of the sky on a daily occurrence.

In March, pictures showed the burning wrecks of Russian aircraft and the terrified faces out Putin’s pilots as they were detained by soldiers and civilians after ejecting from their planes.

Putin's position is now increasingly under threat

PUTIN UNDER THREAT

With Vlad’s war strategy unravelling, he increasingly faces assault from all sides.

On the one hand are the ordinary Russians who don’t want the war to impact their daily lives, even if they support it in general.

As the Russian economy increasingly takes the brunt of Putin’s war, and the death toll increases, they are likely to become increasingly disillusioned with Vlad’s leadership.

On the other hand are the hardliners who want Putin to go far further, taking the war to Ukraine and NATO and raising the prospect of a nuclear strike.

Many military bloggers have been openly critical of Putin’s invasion strategy and his generals.

A friendship for the ages. Kirstie Alley

On Monday’s episode of Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show, Carlson spent a lot of time attempting to gin up outrage about Twitter and Hunter Biden — and during his rant, he made some claims about the concept of misinformation that bordered on itself being misinformation.

You can watch the whole clip above (via Kat Abu.)

We mention this because of “The Twitter Files,” a laughably inept attempt by Elon Musk and former journalist Matt Taibbi to gin up a controversy over the way Twitter treated the Hunter Biden scandal during the 2020 election. Most notably, Taibbi and Musk have dishonestly attempted to paint Twitter’s handling of that as a form of government censorship by implying, falsely, that Democrats controlled the government at the time — and also by asserting that private companies have no right to moderate content.

The two also misrepresented efforts by the Biden campaign to have certain tweets about the matter deleted: The tweets in questions were pictures of Hunter Biden’s penis, making those posts a form of revenge porn which, in addition to being illegal in the state Twitter is based in (California), is also a violation of Twitter’s terms of service.

Or, as TheWrap’s Benjamin Svetkey put it, “Elon Musk’s ‘Twitter Files’ Are Turning Hunter Biden’s Penis Into a Constitutional Crisis. No Joke.“

Anyway, back to Tucker Carlson. He quoted one of the exchanges included in the trove of documents Musk handed Taibbi where the Washington State secretary of state flagged “two tweets with possible misinformation about the election.”

This really set Carlson off. “Now, remember, Misinformation is a new word. It’s been around in the intel world but it’s never been used in common conversation until recently. And the distinction between misinformation and lying is that misinformation can be true. It doesn’t have to be untrue to be censored.”

Both of these statements are simply not true. First, misinformation, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is “incorrect or misleading information.” It differs from “disinformation” only in that disinformation is a form of deliberate deception and misinformation may be the result of people of good faith nevertheless sharing false or misleading things without realizing it. Suffice to say, “incorrect” and “misleading” are both terms that do not describe “true” things.

Second, while it’s true that the word has become much more frequently used since social media became an extremely efficient means of transmitting misinformation, that actually doesn’t mean it was obscure or unknown. There are literally thousands of examples (you can google it) of it being discussed in journalism, academia and other forums long before 2018, when The Washington Post declared it the word of the year due to how bad the problem was.

Also, and more importantly, the term has existed since the 1500s.

Incidentally, though Carlson has been obsessing over the Hunter Biden scandal for years, in 2014 he asked Biden to help his son get into Georgetown.

When Ziad Jallad first read the script for Dirty, Difficult, Dangerous, the actor found it very “relatable” but also “very absurd and funny.”

The film is written and directed by Wissam Charaf and follows the story of Mehdia, an Ethiopian migrant domestic worker in Beirut, who loves Ahmed (Jallad), a Syrian refugee who struggles to survive in dealing in second-hand metal scraps, while affected by a mysterious physical condition related to shrapnel wounds exposure during the war.

Their love story seems to have no future, but since they have nothing, they can lose nothing and when the opportunity presents itself, they leave Beirut in a hopeful and desperate get-away while Ahmed’s physical condition gets worse and worse.

“I could relate to this story because I come from this part of the world and I could relate to those themes of refugees, of how domestic workers are treated in all parts of the world,” Jallad told Deadline’s Red Sea Studio. “I think this movie is universal because yes it talks about situation in Lebanon and about racism and how Syrian refugees are treated and how domestic workers, no matter where they come from, whether it be Asia or Africa.”

Dirty, Difficult, Dangerous is playing at the Red Sea International Film Festival this week in its main competition section.

The film shot some scenes in Lebanon and while there, the Lebanese-Egyptian actor recalls being “shocked” by the situation there given the country is currently in a crisis due to corruption and unsustainable financial policies.

“I hadn’t been in Lebanon for a few years but I was kind of shocked by the situation over there because of the bombings that that happened the year before that and the financial crisis,” he said. “Half of the shops were closed, it was like a ghost city in a way, a lot of poverty in the streets. So, I was sad to see the state of the country but at the same time I was happy to be there to shoot in Lebanon and to be with Lebanese people and to work with them.”

Whenever Karan Johar isn’t making a movie or filming a reality TV show, he makes it a point to spend some quality time with his twins, Roohi and Yash. Often the Bollywood director shares glimpses of hilarious moments with his little munchkins and this time it had a funny Badshah twist added to it. In a new clip shared by Johar on Instagram, he can be seen asking his daughter, “How are you?” Little Roohi who appears to be tired says, “I am exhausted.” The doting father consoles his daughter for a moment and exclaims, “That must be very tough. You are tired. Poor you.”

But what happens next steals the entire show. The camera then pans toward Johar’s son who is seen lying down comfortably on a sofa donning quirky sunglasses. “And what about you,” Johar says while directing the same question to Yash. He quickly responds, “Badshah.” The answer makes the director break out in laughter, “What? You are Badshah?” In the end, the family of three can be heard giggling. “We have a rapper in the house,” wrote Johar while sharing the video online alongside tagging rapper Badshah. Take a look at the clip here:

This isn’t the first time when Yash’s hilarious response has left the internet in splits. In another clip when the father tried to ask his son, “Yash, what are you doing?” The little boy lazily climbs the sofa and said, “I am boring.” Dad Johar made an attempt to correct him, “You are boring no, you’re bored you mean?” But Yash replies, “No, you are boring me.” This left the filmmaker surprised, “I am boring you?” The boy nods yes and Johar grunts out, “Thanks.” The director denoted his son’s reply as the ‘review’ of his personality.

It was back in 2017 when Johar welcomed the twins into his life via surrogacy. His son’s name Yash is a tribute to his father, while the daughter’s name is a rearranging of the filmmaker’s mother’s name Hiroo. In terms of work, Karan Johar’s upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt will hit the big screens in April 2023.

Whenever Karan Johar isn’t making a movie

Kirstie Alley, a two-time Emmy-winning actor who rose to fame with her role as Rebecca Howe in the NBC comedy series “Cheers,” died Monday of cancer. She was 71.

Alley’s death was confirmed through her official social media presence, which shared a statement from her children.

“To all our friends, far and wide around the world… We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered,” reads the statement. “She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead. As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”

“We are grateful to the incredible team of doctors and nurses at the Moffitt Cancer Center for their care,” the statement continues. “Our mother’s zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did. We thank you for your love and prayers and ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time.”

Kirstie Louise Alley was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1951, and moved to Los Angeles in 1980, where she was an interior designer. Alley was already involved in the Church of Scientology, and sought treatment for a cocaine addiction through its affiliated Narconon program, which she credited with her sobriety.

In 1982, she began her film career in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” which she soon followed with “Blind Date” and the 1985 miniseries “North and South.” Two years later, she played opposite Mark Harmon in Carl Reiner’s hit comedy “Summer School.”

It was that year when Alley replaced Shelley Long on NBC’s “Cheers,” which was among the top comedies on television. In 1991, when she won the lead actress Emmy for the role, she delivered a famously bawdy speech, when she thanked her husband, the actor Parker Stevenson: “I’d like to thank my husband, Parker, the man who has given me the big one for the last eight years.” Her second Emmy was for the 1994 television movie “David’s Mother,” in which she played the parent of a teenager with autism.

Alley’s career heights also included NBC’s “Veronica’s Closet” (1997-2000), the meta 2005 Showtime comedy “Fat Actress” and costarring with John Travolta in the three “Look Who’s Talking” movies, a trilogy that kicked off in 1989, and were huge hits.

Alley served as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig’s weight loss system, then parted ways and started her own company Organic Liaisons. She later returned to Jenny Craig, which acquired her company. Over the past few years, Alley became active — and sometimes combative — on social media. She tweeted her support for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, then withdrew her endorsement, then said she had voted for him. Though she often sparred with people over politics, she was also responsible for some examples of non-partisan, deadpan humor that became social media classics, like her response to physicist Stephen Hawking’s death, “You had a good go at it…thanks for your input.”

She worked steadily, always: Alley came in second on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2011; in 2013, she had a self-titled TV Land sitcom called “Kirstie” that was canceled after one season; she was on Season 2 of “Scream Queens” in 2016; and earlier this year, she appeared on Season 7 of “The Masked Singer” — as Baby Mammoth.

She is survived by a son, William True Stevenson, a daughter, Lillie Price Stevenson and a grandson.

Kirstie Alley, a two-time Emmy-winning actor who

John Travolta, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kristin Chenoweth are among the friends, former co-stars and fellow Hollywood industry members remembering actress Kirstie Alley, who died at the age of 71.

In a statement posted to Alley’s Twitter on Monday night, her family shared that the actress, known for her performances in Look Who’s Talking, Veronica‘s Closet and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, had died of cancer.

“She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead,” the statement said. “As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”

Among Alley’s earlier and most memorable roles was her portrayal of the lovable and unlucky bar manager Rebecca Howe in more than 100 episodes of Cheers. But the actress, who starred on both the small and big screen, also appeared alongside John Travolta in 1989’s Amy Heckerling-directed rom-com Look Who’s Talking, which was followed with two sequels.

In a statement posted to his Instagram, Travolta said his co-star “was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had” before adding that the two would “see each other again.”

The Kansas-born actress, who embodied everything from comedic to dramatic roles, most recently appeared on the small screen, including roles in Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and the Betty White, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Valerie Bertinelli-led TV Land comedy Hot in Cleveland.

Curtis, in her own post Monday night, called Alley’s death “sad news,” writing that “we agreed to disagree about some things but had a mutual respect and connection.”

“She was a great comic foil in @tvscreamqueens and a beautiful mama bear in her very real life,” Curtis added.

Tim Allen, Alley’s co-star in For Richer or Poorer, called her “a sweet soul” in a tribute on Twitter.

Actor Josh Gad wrote that his “heart breaks for Kirstie and her family,” remembering the Cheers star for her brilliance and adding that throughout her career, “her smile was always infectious, her laugh was always contagious and her charisma was always iconic.”

Secret Life of Pets screenwriter Brian Lynch also celebrated her work on Cheers and Look Who’s Talking, noting that she “had incredible comic timing.”

Broadway star Chenoweth, who guest appeared on Alley’s self-titled one-season TV Land show, shared Travolta’s sentiments, tweeting, “I love you, Kirstie. I will see you again someday. I can’t believe you’re gone.”

Handmaid’s Tale and Marvel’s Runaway actress Ever Carradine, who starred with Alley in Veronica’s Closet, acknowledged that while they have not spoken in a while, she is thankful to the late actress “for launching my career.”

“She told me I was funny every single day on Veronica’s Closet, and I believed her,” she continued. “She threw the best parties and gave the parakeets as our wrap gift. Godspeed.”

The Good Doctor: Broken or Not (12/12)

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains major spoilers for the ending and mid-credits scene in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” currently playing in theaters.

Angela Bassett, who is generating Oscar buzz for her performance as Ramonda in Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” is sharing her feelings about her character’s death. Her tone was good-natured during the discussion, but the sentiment was clear that she wasn’t happy when she first read the script by Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole.

During an interview with Variety for an upcoming episode of the Awards Circuit Podcast, Bassett reveals for the first time that she shot a scene with the young actor Divine Love Konadu-Sun, who plays a character revealed to be the son of T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o). However, Bassett’s scene with the young actor was cut from the final version of the film.

“I filmed a scene,” Bassett says. “I did, but you know — cutting room, readjusting and reshaping it. What does Ramonda say? Oh, ‘Shuri, there’s something that I need to tell you.’”

Bassett recalled parts of the scene that were cut but stopped short of going into greater detail. “I went to Haiti, of course. I met him, I was introduced to him… but it wound up on the cutting room floor.”

She further explains it was cut “to make it a surprise for the audience and to Shuri. It was the right way to go. Perfect to go about it.”

In the deleted scene, she discloses that Nakia introduces Ramonda to Toussaint as his “Nanna.” Doesn’t that make your heart swoon? She later describes the young Konadu-Sun as a “precious little angel.”

She also commented about learning about Ramonda’s death when reading the script for the first time.

“I was not happy about that,” says Bassett. “I was not pleased. I was so shocked. I was… just mortified. You know, it’s like they gave you the greatest gift, and they snatched it away. Part of me was like, ‘Okay, don’t say anything, be strong.’ Then the other part of me was like… ‘I just got to let him know. That I don’t like this at all — and why? — and don’t do this.’ The love for Ramonda was so real and heartfelt, but you know — they always kill the heart and soul.”

Helmed by Ryan Coogler, the sequel to the 2019 best picture nominee delivers a wrenching story of grief and reclamation as the family of T’Challa — played by the late Boseman — adjusts to a world coping with his death.

Bassett’s sole previous Academy Award nod was for her turn as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do With It” (1993). Notably, no actor has been Oscar-nominated for a performance in the Marvel Cinematic, despite DC Comics adaptations landing wins with the likes of Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight”) and Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”). There have been a few seeming “close calls,” such as Michael B. Jordan’s turn as Killmonger in the first “Black Panther.”

For the fourth consecutive week, “Wakanda Forever” was at the top of the dometic box office, bringing its North American tally to $393.7 million.

Screen Time is

After casting aside Senegal 3-0 on Sunday evening, England became the fourth side to enter the quarterfinals of the Qatar World Cup, and media outlets from across the world have been quick to pile on the praise.

Gareth Southgate‘s side eased past the African champions to book a date with France in the final eight on Saturday night, courtesy of first-half strikes from Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane, with Bukayo Saka making it three in the second period.

And naturally English fans will have woken up to rave reviews for the Three Lions back home, as the nation gets behind their team out in Qatar but – perhaps surprisingly – media outlets from around the world were equally impressed.

From Argentina and Brazil to Germany and Italy – Kane and Co have come in for high praise, with many publications hailing Southgate’s leadership and squad-building that has put together a ‘perfect union of youth and experience’.

The Tottenham striker himself was the recipient of countless plaudits, with the world both celebrating him breaking his World Cup duck, whilst simultaneously spelling out why it is an ominous omen for France in the quarters.

But it was not quite a clean sweep for England. Infamous French football outlet L’Equipe remain confident that ‘King’ Kylian Mbappe will be indefatigable in attack, as well as pinpointing Harry Maguire as a weak point at the heart of defence.

Here Sportsmail takes a look at how the world’s media reacted to England’s 3-0 victory over Senegal that teed up Saturday’s mammoth clash with France.

England’s 3-0 win over Senegal has been praised by media outlets across the globe

Germany, Bild

‘KO-King Kane strikes again!’, wrote Bild. The German outlet was quick to single out the Three Lions skipper after he grabbed his long-awaited first goal of the tournament on the cusp of half-time against Senegal.

Many media organisations had cast aspersions on Harry Kane’s place in the side after a barren run in front of goal of three games, which does not sound like much but the captain did finish the last tournament as top scorer.

But he was not the only recipient of strong reviews, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham described as ‘outstanding’, and Jordan Pickford’s ‘super save’ from Boulaye Dia’s close range effort in the first half was also celebrated.

And with Raheem Sterling’s unfortunate absence and joint-top scorer Marcus Rashford on the bench, Bild were equally impressed with the strength in depth at Southgate’s fingers, claiming: ‘But the effective “Three Lions” march into the World Cup quarterfinals – even without some top stars!’

Bild labelled Jude Bellingham's performance on Sunday evening as 'outstanding'

Italy, La Gazetta dello Sport

For Italian publication La Gazetta dello Sport, what was notable was the fact that England now have eight different goalscorers at the tournament following efforts from Henderson and Kane on Sunday.

And Southgate’s defensive pairing of Maguire and John Stones were also highlighted for their handling of Senegal striker Dia, although there was an implication that the Manchester City defender needed ‘his body and his hand’ to stop the Salernitana forward.

But some of the enthusiasm was kept in check by skepticism cast in the direction of Senegal, who were ‘overwhelmed’ and combined poor defence with an absent clinical touch in the England penalty box.

Aliou Cisse’s ‘useless’ triple substitution at half-time was also savaged, but the Italian outlet maintain that it made little impact on the game, with England remaining equally ‘impregnable’.

In fact the only compliment for the Senegalese performance was directed to their energetic and frenetic supporters, writing that ‘the incessant roll’ of the drums ‘enlivened’ the game.

Argentina, Clarin

Argentinian publication Clarin has already begun to bill the quarterfinal clash as the final that England could have had in Russia four years ago, before extra time heartbreak saw Southgate’s side lose to Croatia in the semifinals.

Kane’s return to the scoresheet was once again heralded, but for the Argentinian outlet it is a decisive moment in the campaign that allows England fans to at last ‘dream big’.

However, his contributions to the team do not begin and end with goals, according to Clarin. The Spurs forward’s ability to link the play and give assists, as well as make space for on-rushing midfielders to break lines, are what makes him ‘essential’ to this England team.

The clash with Les Bleus on Saturday is now being billed as ‘a kind of early final’, and there is a sense of confidence in the prospects of the Three Lions, provided that Kane can keep hold of his shooting boots.

Holland, De Telegraaf

Dutch organisation De Telegraaf have lead on the growth of England as a force in international football, claiming that the Three Lions now have an improved sense of worth due to their recent showings in major tournaments.

England's talented young stars have drawn widespread acclaim

England’s talented young stars have drawn widespread acclaim

And in Holland there is the opinion that the litany of attacking talent in the current squad foreshadows future success, with De Telegraaf arguing that ‘a major prize can now be taken’.

Bellingham and Phil Foden both excelled on Sunday, and the Dutch outlet were among the many suitors for the talented young pair, with Arsenal’s Saka also drawing glittering reviews.

De Telegraaf also hinted that Bellingham’s future lies back in ‘his home country’ and foretold a massive transfer saga coming in the summer with him at the heart of it.

However the one blemish for the Dutch media was Maguire’s moment of sloppiness that allowed Dia in behind in the first half, although that was more than made up for by Pickford’s stunning stop.

Brazil, O Globo

For Brazilian outlet O Globo, Sunday’s victory was an example of England’s perfect ‘union of youth and experience’ in Qatar.

O Globo admitted that they had predicted a tie before kick-off and that they had expected a sterner showing from Senegal in the face of the ‘best attack in the World Cup.’

But for the Brazilians, once the ball got rolling in the first half, England put on a show of complete dominance thanks to the enviable blend of ages at Southgate’s disposal.

O Globo write that this harmony is nowhere more evident than in England’s first goal, with Bellingham drawing on his energy and dynamism to take the ball up the pitch before cutting back for the more experienced Henderson.

Spain, Marca

Marca described England’s victory as ‘comfortable’ as they eased past the African champions to make the final eight and line up that mouth-watering meeting with France.

Comparisons were made with the performances of Holland, Argentina and France in the first three matches from the round of 16, in what was dubbed a ‘professional’ performance.

But it was not a straight forward walk in the park, in the eyes of Spanish outlet Marca, who claim that there were several early warning signs with Senegal having joy against a ‘static backline’.

Yet it was just as Senegal looked to be turning the game in their favour that the Three Lions managed to gain some control on proceedings, with the game thereafter running away from Cisse’s team.

Bellingham and Foden once again drew the eye, with the Spanish media contending that the matter was sealed by half-time which allowed Southgate to rotate his stars ahead of Saturday’s crunch match.

USA, Fox

For American outlet Fox there were parallels to be drawn with England’s 0-0 draw with USA in the group stages, with the underdog Senegal being on the front foot early on in the tie.

But as with many other organisations, Fox was quick to praise the attacking options that Southgate has both on the pitch and on the bench, noting that the side has managed 12 goals from four games with eight different players notching in that time.

After a ‘shambolic’ early showing from the Three Lions, Fox claimed that the goal on the cusp of half-time was a ‘backbreaker’ for the African champions, but the American publication argued that the manager’s selection was vindicated after starting Foden ahead of Marcus Rashford.

Fox echoed O Globo’s praise of England’s wealth of young talent, saying the current crop of players is ‘a very good England team’ and a ‘fun team’ to watch – despite former USMNT player Alexi Lalas admitting he gets ‘incredible joy in the pain that England feels at times.’

France, L’Equipe

It was from L’Equipe that England received their least glowing of appraisals – unsurprisingly given their meeting with France on Saturday evening – with Maguire’s unpunished first half error drawing plenty of attention.

L'Equipe's headline reads: 'God Save Our King' ahead of France's meeting with England

L’Equipe’s headline reads: ‘God Save Our King’ ahead of France’s meeting with England

The French outlet pointed to the Manchester United defender as the weak point in England’s starting XI, and claimed that his ‘slowness could prove detrimental’ to Southgate’s hopes.

Pace is something that the French side has in droves, with Mbappe joined in attack by Barcelona speedster Ousmane Dembele, but it is the former’s impending battle with Kyle Walker that will prove decisive in their eyes.

Walker’s very recent return from a groin injury has been mentioned, and the French publication are of strong opinion that the outcome of that particular battle will surely be the side to make the last four.

And the publication spared no time in having their say on who would come out on top, running the headline ‘God Save Notre King,’ accompanied by a photo of a jubilant Mbappe, who scored twice as France saw off Poland 3-1 on Sunday.

L’Equipe also pointed to a potential switch in formation from 4-3-3 to a 3-4-3, which they argue would both protect Maguire’s pace from being exposed, as well as align with Southgate’s record of opting for a three-man defence against ‘the best selections’.

But it was not all bad news for England fans, with Bellingham once again being singled out for his abilities as a ‘dominant box-to-box midfielder’ who could rival the skills of ‘Adrien Rabiot or Antoine Griezmann’ in the middle of the park.

Despite Bellingham’s now-proven ability, one paper in France has gone one step further and sent out a bold claim ahead of Saturday’s huge meeting in Qatar, with the headline: ‘Ready To Eat A Lion’.

After casting aside Senegal 3-0 on Sunday

Warner Bros. Pictures just announced today and has just released a first look of Oscar-winning writer/director/producer Bong Joon Ho ‘s new film titled Mickey 17. This will be his first movie adaptation and will be directed by none other than Oscar winner, Bong Joon Ho. Bong’s adaptation of Mickey7 will be his third English-language film, and his first film back since his 2019 South Korean masterpiece Parasite shattered box office records worldwide. The film will be starring A-lister Robert Pattinson who will be playing Mickey Barnes. It is based on the novel entitled Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. The book starts off with us meeting Mickey7 so its a safe assumption that Barnes has already died six times before you even begin finishing page one.

Below please find first look courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures:

What will the film be about?

The film will be taken from the novel Mickey7  which centers around Michael Barnes who was a historian on a planet similar to that of Earth that is falling apart. In an effort to save themselves and civilization missions begin to find other planets and colonize them. These missions bring the best and brightest as there is a limited spot on each vessel. Unfortunately that is not Barnes, there is really no need for a historian to help colonize a new planet. So Barnes has pretty much the same luck as Leonardo DiCaprio did when his character Jack Dawson won that last minute ticket to board the Titanic. Barnes gets a seat on the vessel if he agrees to become an expendable. This means that once on the new planet, Barnes would have his thoughts and personality uploaded on a regular basis to the tank and be put to task doing jobs that no one wants to do (basically suicide missions). If he dies, they clone him and upload the memories to a new Mickey and repeat.

When will it be coming out?

The film, Mickey 17 is still currently in production and is being filmed in Leavesden Studios in London, England. The filming began in August and is said to wrap December 20, 2022. It is being produced by Plan B Entertainment, Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company, and Bong Joon Ho under his Offscreen, Inc. banner. The behind-the-camera creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Darius Khondji  Oscar-nominated production designer Fiona Crombie from The Favourite and Cruella. Oscar-nominated editor Jinmo Yang from Parasite, costume designer Catherine George who worked on Okja and Snowpiercer, and visual effects supervisor Dan Glass for The Matrix franchise. The music is by composer Jae-il Jung who worked on Parasite and Squid Game.

Joining Pattinson are Oscar nominee Steven Yeun from Minari and The Walking Dead. Naomi Ackie from I Wanna Dance with Somebody and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Oscar nominee Toni Collette from Hereditary and The Sixth Sense, and lastly Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo from the “Avengers” films and Spotlight. Mickey 17 will be released worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 29, 2024.  Stay tuned for more updates and upcoming news on this new must see film.

Warner Bros. Pictures just announced today and

Apple Podcasts released its year-end rankings of the top series, episodes and channels — with true-crime podcast publisher Audiochuck sitting at the top of several of the lists.

Audiochuck, the Indianapolis-based network founded by Ashley Flowers (pictured above), was the top free channel on Apple Podcasts for the second year in a year. Its flagship show, “Crime Junkie,” was the No. 1 most listened to show, as well as the most followed and most shared show in the U.S. On Spotify’s list of top 2022 podcasts in the U.S., “Crime Junkie” was No. 3 (after “The Joe Rogan Experience” and “Call Her Daddy,” both of which are exclusively available on Spotify). “Crime Junkie,” which debuted in 2017, is co-hosted by Flowers and Brit Prawat.

In addition, “The Deck,” one of Audiochuck’s newest series, was the No. 1 new show in the U.S. on Apple Podcasts. Hosted by Flowers, the weekly series tells the story of a person whose murder or mysterious disappearance has gone unsolved for years. (See below for all rankings.)

The other top shows of 2022 overall in the U.S. were the New York Times’ “The Daily” (No. 2), “Dateline NBC” (No. 3), “Morbid” (No. 4), “SmartLess,” hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett (No. 5), “This American Life” (No. 6), “Up First” (No. 7), “Serial” (No. 8), “The Ben Shapiro Show” (No. 9) and “Hidden Brain” (No. 10).

Meanwhile, according to Apple, Serial’s “Adnan Is Out” — the new episode of the show that first questioned Adnan Syed’s murder conviction, which Serial produced after Syed was released from prison — was the top shared episode of the year in the U.S., while Serial’s first episode from the original series (“The Alibi”) was No. 3. Serial Productions is owned by the New York Times.

Wondery, the podcast studio that is part of Amazon Music, had the top subscriber channel on Apple Podcasts — and also distributes 16 of the 20 top subscriber shows, led by “Morbid,” a true-crime podcast hosted by Alaina Urquhart and Ash Kelley, at No. 1.

Last week, Apple announced the Apple Podcasts Award, honoring Slate’s narrative history series “Slow Burn” as the Show of the Year for its latest season, “Roe v. Wade,” hosted by Slate executive editor Susan Matthews, exploring the events leading up to the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that was overturned earlier this year. Since then, Slow Burn has climbed to the top of the charts across all categories in more than 100 countries and regions and is the No. 1 history podcast and ranks among the top 10 across categories in the U.S.

Apple Podcasts released its year-end rankings of

Honored with TikTok’s Future Icon award at Variety‘s Hitmakers brunch on Dec. 3 for his trend-inspiring power ballad “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All),” Omar Apollo made the most of his acceptance speech. The alternative-R&B singer told the audience — which included the likes of Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, Jack Harlow — a short anecdote because, as he bragged, “I’m an above average storyteller.”

The Mexican American singer proceeded to describe how ironic it was that he had achieved the mark of Future Icon, as he had struggled with the concept of the future for much of his adolescent years. “I remember when I was in high school, I was really obsessed with the future and I remember when I first started singing I was like, ‘Just wait till I hit puberty, it’s gonna go crazy,’” he said, prompting the room to break out in laughter.

“At the end of high school… it was really exciting. We were we were all gonna start applying for colleges, and I was really pumped… so I applied to as many schools as I [could],” he explained. “I didn’t get accepted into any of the colleges that I applied for, but there was one college in particular that I was really upset about.”

Apollo wasted no time contemplating whether to name drop, adding that it was Columbia College in Chicago who rejected his application.

“It’s an art school, and I wanted to make music, I wanted to sing, I wanted to produce music and I was really looking forward to it,” he explained. “I was thinking that was the next step I needed to take, and I was really upset because the acceptance rate to this school was 93%. I was like, ‘There’s no way I’m the 7%. It just can’t be.’”

In response, the then 18 year-old Apollo called the school’s administrator to find a loophole in the decision but was ultimately turned away due to poor test scores and a “terrible” essay.

“It’s funny to be recognized as a Future Icon because there was a point in time, in my young life, where I didn’t think I had a future,” he concluded. “I never thought of myself in that way but honestly… we here, thank you so much.”

Apollo’s “Evergreen” found a second life on TikTok some four months — and two tours — after it had been released in April as part of the Indiana-born singer’s “Ivory” album. The trend started with one fan angrily belting the song’s tear-jerking bridge (“You know you really made me hate myself / Had to stop before I break myself / Should’ve broke it off to date myself / You didn’t deserve me at all”) and, the song has since soundtracked more than 380,000 videos and racked up billions of video views.

Variety‘s 2022 Hitmakers brunch was held at City Market Social House in Downtown Los Angeles on Dec. 3 and celebrated the year’s best songs and the industry’s top execs, artists and creatives.

Awards ceremony commentary: Voting for the nominees of the upcoming DGA Awards, are now open.

The Directors Guild of America represents more than 19,000 members worldwide. There are just over 570 voting members of the Academy’s directors branch.

The DGA traditionally indicates the top five contenders in the best picture race. Only one DGA nominee in the expanded best picture era has failed to nab a best picture nomination: David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011). In the last decade, the winner of the DGA has gone on to win the Oscar for best director except for two times: Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) over Sam Mendes (“1917”) and Ang Lee (“Life of Pi”) over the Oscar-snubbed Ben Affleck (“Argo”).

There have been seven women previously nominated for the first-time director: Alma Har’el (“Honey Boy”), Radha Blank (“The Forty-Year-Old Version”), Regina King (“One Night in Miami”), Marielle Heller (“The Diary of a Teenage Girl”), Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”), Mati Diop (“Atlantics”) and Melina Matsoukas (“Queen & Slim”). Awards ceremony commentary: Voting for the nominees of

The greatest movie ever made was written and directed by a woman, says a poll of more than 1,600 international film critics that is being called a “seismic” jolt to cinema appreciation.

It’s Chantal Akerman’s “Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles,” a rarely seen 1975 neorealist classic about the daily affairs of a Brussels homemaker, played by Delphine Seyrig, who works as a part-time prostitute. Belgian filmmaker Akerman was just 25 when she made it.

“Jeanne Dielman” tops the 2022 edition of “The Greatest Films of All Time,” a survey of critics (plus a separate one of directors) conducted every 10 years by the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound magazine. Listing 100 films in all, it’s the most respected and influential of movie polls and arguably of greater interest to cineastes than the annual bestowing of the Oscar for Best Picture.

It’s the first time in the poll’s 70-year history that a film by a female filmmaker has taken the top spot in a traditionally male-dominated survey. Besides being a boost to women filmmakers and a discussion prompt as to what constitutes a great film, the poll can also be read as a collective critical poke in the eye to the increasing dominance of blockbuster superhero fare at movie theatres, which gobble up screens at the expense of small art house films.

This has certainly been the fate of “Jeanne Dielman” over the past 47 years. Running nearly 31/2 hours and with a defiantly meditative pace, it’s the polar opposite of a popcorn movie and one not often screened by theatres — although it is now available on streaming services.

Yet it managed to topple the 2012 Sight and Sound poll champion, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” which drops to second place. “Vertigo” had earlier dethroned Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” from its 50-year penthouse reign; “Kane” now stands at No. 3.

Following in order after “Kane” are the other films in the 2022 Sight and Sound all-time Top 10: “Tokyo Story,” “In the Mood for Love,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Beau Travail,” “Mulholland Drive,” “Man With a Movie Camera” and “Singin’ in the Rain.” (Boldfaced titles are new Top 10 entries, as is “Jeanne Dielman”; see list at end.)

“The top of the poll list has been stable for decades, so this is a seismic shift in critical opinion,” Sight and Sound editor Mike Williams told the Star via email. “It is invigorating to see that voters are rethinking what it means for a film to be considered ‘the greatest,’ outside of what has previously been considered in the canon.”

Laura Mulvey, a professor of film studies at Birkbeck, University of London, hailed “Jeanne Dielman” as “the extraordinarily daring cinema of a great woman director” and agreed that its No. 1 poll ranking will shake up cinematic thinking.

“One might say that it felt as though there was a before and an after ‘Jeanne Dielman,’ just as there had once been a before and after ‘Citizen Kane,’” she said in a press release.

“Jeanne Dielman” is considered a landmark of feminist cinema for its depiction of female work, but Akerman herself resisted labels: “When people ask me if I am a feminist filmmaker, I reply I am a woman and I also make films,” she famously said.

The No. 9 poll placement for the 1999 military drama “Beau Travail” represents another plus for women. It’s directed and co-written by France’s Claire Denis, 76, a veteran filmmaker who, like the late Akerman (who died by suicide in 2015 at age 65), has struggled for recognition in a male-dominated movie industry.

Barry Jenkins' Oscar-winning "Moonlight."

“Jeanne Dielman” and “Beau Travail” were the only two female-directed films in the entire 100 list of the 2012 Sight and Sound poll, where they respectively ranked in 36th and 78th places. Now they’re the only two female-directed films ever to make the Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time Top 10.

Akerman haș another movie in the new Sight and Sound poll: “News From Home” (1976), set in New York and based on a series of letters from her mother. There are a total of 11 films directed by women in the 2022 poll, including two by the late French filmmaker Agnès Varda, who was honoured this year at Cannes with a theatre named for her: “Cléo From 5 to 7” (1962) ranked in 14th place and “The Gleaners and I” (2000) ranked 67th.

These women and others made tremendous leaps to reach the 2022 heights and so did filmmakers of colour. There was just one movie by a Black director in the 2012 poll: Djibril Diop Mambéty’s “Touki Bouki,” ranked at number 93.

Now there are 11, including Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” (24th place), Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” (95th) and, in a tie for 60th place, Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning “Moonlight” and Julie Dash’s “Daughters of the Dust.”

“Do the Right Thing,” Lee’s acclaimed 1989 Brooklyn neighbourhood drama, which controversially didn’t receive Oscar nominations for Best Picture or Best Director, is the highest-ranked film by a Black filmmaker in this year’s Sight and Sound poll. Its ranking at 24th place is impressive, considering it didn’t even make the Top 100 last time.

"Do the Right Thing," Spike Lee's acclaimed 1989 Brooklyn neighbourhood drama which controversially didn't receive Oscar nominations for Best Picture or Best Director, is the highest-ranked film by a Black filmmaker in this year's Sight and Sound poll.

The improved poll standings for both women and filmmakers of colour come as no surprise for Williams and his team. They nearly doubled the number of poll participants, from 846 in 2012 to a record 1,600-plus for 2022, along with making a greater effort to include women and people of colour.

“We reached out to a diverse audience as much as possible, including seeking advice on how to expand our reach to under-represented groups, to contribute to the poll in addition to the more traditional voting base,” Williams.

The critics’ poll includes an unspecified number of academics, distributors, writers, curators, archivists and programmers, many of whom also review movies in the course of their work.

Since 1992, Sight and Sound has also run a concurrent directors’ poll of all-time greatest films. This year’s list, with a record 480 contributors, is topped by Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi epic “2001: A Space Odyssey,” dethroning 2012 champ “Tokyo Story.” The directors also found love this year for “Jeanne Dielman,” ranking it in fourth place, behind “2001,” “Citizen Kane” and “The Godfather.”

Almost as shocking as some of the placements on the Sight and Sound 2022 list are some of the films dropped from this year’s Top 100. They include such traditional critical favourites as “The Godfather Part II,” “Raging Bull,” “Nashville,” “Chinatown,” “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Un Chien Andalou.”

It shows you how fickle critical taste can be, especially when you greatly expand the roster of critics.

The greatest movie ever made was written

Kate Winslet

Often, it’s the tales as old as time that have the ugliest, stalest ring to them. Case in point: Oscar and Emmy-winner Kate Winslet, who recently opened up about handling industry fixation on her weight as a newer actor. Winslet shot to stardom at the age of 22 after her lead role in James Cameron’s Titanic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

“When I was younger my agent would get calls saying, ‘How’s her weight?’” Winslet tells The Sunday Times’ Jonathan Dean in a new interview. Winslet did not specify who called upon her agent with these questions.

Now 47, Winslet also shares that she cares deeply “about being that actor who moves their face and has a body that jiggles,” and choosing roles that allow her to stay true to what’s closest to her heart.

“I make each decision with integrity,” she explains, “because if I don’t I’ll be shit.”

Case in point: Winslet’s latest role in the drama I Am Ruth, where she stars alongside her real-life daughter Mia Threapleton. In the film, Winslet plays a mother trying to help her daughter (Threapleton) navigate the pressures of social media amidst mental health concerns.

The story rings true for Winslet—as she puts it, the additional prevalence of social media and involuntary recording heightens the scrutiny her daughter experiences in the industry, and makes every mistake seem tragically permanent.

“It was hard enough having the flipping News of the World on my doorstep, but that doesn’t even cut it now,” she shares. “That phrase about ‘today’s news being tomorrow’s fish and chip paper’ doesn’t exist. The thing you did when you were drunk or foolish? It may come back to haunt you. Needing to be on one’s guard for young actors is just a different thing. It must be extraordinarily hard.”
