It’s encouraging to see storylines from earlier this season get picked up again rather than letting them float along unresolved.

CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 9 brought home the point that there’s a big bad who hasn’t been revealed.

That’s a relief. Catherine solved Grace’s murder on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 8, seemingly wrapping up the main ongoing story arc. But now it’s revealed that there’s a new storyline to enjoy for the rest of this season.

It turns out that three of the nine cases in CSI: Vegas Season 2 are connected, even though it didn’t appear so at first.

This case with two murders at a Regency romance festival just seemed like another of the bizarre murders that the Vegas CSI lab keeps having dropped in their laps.

But no. It hearkened back to CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 1, in which a dominatrix was murdered by a seeming wackadoo, Alan Herskovitz.

Herskovitz also went after Lamont Moore, who had undergone the same experimental psychiatric treatment as himself and the dominatrix. But Moore was saved when Herskovitz was arrested and committed.

Make that “saved for a short time,” as he reappeared, murdered in the cheap motel room where he had been hiding.

Only it appeared that Moore had no link to the first two victims until it turned out that he was a janitor at the hotel where the Regency romance festival was being held.

It soon became apparent that the first two victims were killed by mistake and that Moore was the real target of the killer.

Still, that didn’t map out why Moore had again been targeted. That required dogged work by Allie, who discovered documents that Moore had hidden in his hotel-room tub.

Moore was being blackmailed so that he would murder Albert Santoni, who accidentally killed a star chef before committing suicide on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 6. Having failed to obey orders from some unknown big bad, Moore was the latest to be earmarked for murder.

The documents showed that all the suspects and victims from three cases had been patients of a controversial psychiatrist.

That left only Herskovitz alive. He knew more than he was saying to Maxine and Catherine but kept up the raving so that he wouldn’t be released or found sane and sent to prison.

Solving the case came down to grackle poop, found on a bullet hole at the first murder. Its composition enabled the team to narrow its search to a handful of farms using a particular brand of genetically engineered feed.

Serena and Allie drew the short straw, locating the killer, who had been partially blinded when Moore threw bleach at him. He made the mistake of tussling with Serena, leading him to be at death’s door after he made it to surgery.

Unfortunately, the big bad behind the conspiracy now has an image of Catherine, Maxine, and Penny, thanks to the web camera on the killer’s laptop.

The only question is whether this storyline will keep coming and going and whether it will be completed sooner or later. With the series’ soft ratings, let’s hope it’s sooner rather than opting for a never-concluded season-ending cliffhanger.

Since Catherine decided to hang around after solving Grace’s murder, she needed to find her direction in Maxine’s lab. She opted to become Penny’s unofficial mentor, requesting a locker next to Penny’s from Max.

Catherine has developed a soft spot for Penny. She even brought her inside a murder scene as her assistant on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 4, feeling that Penny needed exposure to such a horrific tableau as part of her learning process.

What didn’t make sense was Folsom’s balking at her giving Penny extra attention. He indeed appeared to appreciate receiving Catherine’s guidance. So why not build up the least confident member of the squad?

Catherine’s encouragement paid dividends after Penny’s suggestion that they research the corn in the grackle’s feces to discover where it could be found.

She also gave Penny some tough love, explaining that Penny needs to step up rather than wait for her coworkers to pull opinions out of her.

Penny was wise to seek advice from Beau, another newbie who has never been afraid to offer his thoughts on any case, even if he sometimes misses the mark.

Then again, Beau is an adult male who has already established himself as an expert in a different field. So he doesn’t lack confidence.

The tension between Allie and Folsom came to a head even if he remained mainly oblivious to the problem.

Allie was facing an upcoming professional exam, and Folsom was doing everything he could to help her pass, even convincing his girlfriend, Serena, to help quiz Allie.

Serena has to be aware of Allie’s feelings for Josh, but she’s self-assured enough not to let it affect their working relationship.

The problem is that any romantic relationship between Allie and Folsom exists exclusively in her head. He views her like a younger sister. So it was little wonder that he was clueless when she declared that their friendship had to evolve. Maybe he should ask Serena what’s going on.

To revisit Allie and Folsom’s relationship, watch CSI: Vegas online.

How did you feel about this new ongoing serial-killer storyline?

Shouldn’t Penny embrace Catherine as a mentor?

Who’s more wrong: Allie or Folsom?

It's encouraging to see storylines from earlier

When the 2023 Golden Globes nominations were announced on Monday, ABC’s Abbott Elementary, Searchlight’s Banshees of Inisherin, Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Indian musical-epic RRR were among the TV shows and films that stood out for their notable honors.

Network comedy Abbott Elementary took the crown of most-nominated TV series with six, including four performance nominations, all of which went to Black members of the show’s ensemble, while Banshees of Inisherin wrangled up the most nods for a film with 12 mentions, including a nod for best motion picture musical or comedy.

There was also quite a large class of first-timers in this year’s nominations pool, but only one actress, Ozark‘s Julia Garner is a double nominee this year. Only Murders in the Building‘s Steven Martin and Wednesday‘s Jenna Ortega could set new records for age diversity in their categories, but women filmmakers were shut out of the best director category after two years of consecutive best director wins.

Indian musical-epic RRR is continuing its successful awards season push with two historic Golden Globe nominations for Tollywood, including one for best non-English language film. And just like its 2018 predecessor, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is helping to make history at the Golden Globes for superhero movies.

Read on for more about this year’s noteworthy nominations.

Specialty Studios and Streamers Lead the Pack

When it comes to film distributors at this year’s Golden Globes, it was indie and specialty studios that came out on top. Searchlight scored 12 nominations total, with eight of those going to The Banshees of Inisherin. It also scored two for The Menu stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes, one for Olivia Colman in Empire of Light and another for Good Luck to You, Leo Grande‘s Emma Thompson. Indie studio A24, behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Netflix came in second and third place with 10 and 9 nominations, respectively.

On the television side, the combined showing of HBO and HBO Max tied streaming pioneer Netflix with 14 nominations. Next in line with the second-most noms is streamer Hulu with 10 followed by Disney-owned cable network FX with nine nods. Streamers ultimately dominated in the TV category overall, with ABC becoming the only broadcaster to be nominated, leaving a few cablers and even more streaming platforms with the rest (and most) of the nominations.

Abbott Elementary Reigns in TV

Ahead of this year’s Globes, Abbott Elementary was the most nominated television series, with five nods including best TV series (musical/comedy) and best actress in a TV series (musical/comedy) for Quinta Brunson. Five series tied with four nods each including The Crown, Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Only Murders in the Building, Pam and Tommy and The White Lotus. Blackbird, Hacks, Ozark and Severance followed with three nods each.

The Banshees of Inisherin Reigns in Film

On the film side, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin led the list of nominations with eight nods, including best picture (musical/comedy) and writing and directing noms for Martin McDonagh. A significant portion of the film’s main cast — Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan — was also nominated across the acting categories. Everything Everywhere All at Once followed with six noms, while Babylon and The Fabelmans earned five nods each.

First-Time Nominees

A new class of first-time nominees has been announced — 41 to be exact — and there are nearly as many fresh faces as over-due honorees. Among the stars scoring their first nods are Adam Scott (Severance), Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus), Austin Butler (Elvis), Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin), Benjamin Rice (Top Gun: Maverick), BloodPop (Top Gun: Maverick), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Daniel Kwan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Diego Calva (Babylon), Diego Luna (Andor), Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness), Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), Evan Peters (Dahmer), Janelle James (Abbott Elementary), Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Jeremy Pope (The Inspection), Kala Bhairava (RRR), Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris), Lily James (Pam & Tommy), M.M. Keeravani (RRR), Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Niecy Nash (Dahmer), Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Rahul Sipligunj (RRR), Rihanna (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Roeban Katz (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Sarah Polley (Women Talking), Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy), Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Tems (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Tyler James Williams (Abbott Elementary) and Zendaya (Euphoria).

Double Nominees

Though 41 stars were nominated for the first time, a number of returning stars are up for two awards. Julia Garner is nominated for best performance by an actress in a limited or anthology series or motion picture made for television for her portrayal of socialite Anna Delvey in Shonda Rhimes’ Inventing Anna.

Garner also received a supporting actress in a musical-comedy or drama series nomination for her role as Ruth in Netflix’s Ozark, which aired its series finale in May. Garner was previously nominated for her Ozark role in 2021. If she wins both awards, she’ll be in a select group — as in literally just five women — who have secured two acting awards in the same year. Previous winners include Sigourney Weaver, Helen Mirren, Joan Plowright and Kate Winslet.

Alexandre Desplat is also a double nominee this year, with nods in the best original score and best original song motion picture categories for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

RRR Makes a Blockbuster Showing

One of the highest-grossing Tollywood films in history and one of the most streamed Indian films on Netflix, according to the company, epic RRR is leaving its mark on the U.S. awards season despite not being selected as India’s best international feature submission for the Oscars. The three-hour action-musical garnered two Golden Globe nominations, including best non-English language film and best original song.

Black Panther Makes MCU History Again

The Ryan Coogler-directed Black Panther made Golden Globes history at the 2019 awards, becoming the first film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to earn a best motion picture drama nomination. It also marked the first time any superhero film had been nominated in that category. Now with its 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has made history as well. Actress Angela Bassett, who plays Queen Ramonda in the movie, has garnered the MCU’s very first acting nomination at the Globes, and first-ever in the category of best actress. (Deadpool was nominated for best musical or comedy while Ryan Reynolds was nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy movie in 2017, but that was before Disney purchased 21st Century Fox.)

Brendan Fraser Is Nominated — But Likely Not Attending

Fraser’s turn in The Whale as Charlie, an overweight man who attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter after his partner dies, has been almost universally lauded, even if director Darren Aronofsky and writer Samuel D. Hunter have faced criticism over their handling of the main character’s weight. Fraser’s performance is arguably the most celebrated aspect of the film and has earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best performance by an actor in a motion picture drama. But whether the actor will be in attendance to accept his award in person seems unlikely after Fraser said in an interview that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s handling of his sexual assault allegation against an expelled member means he will “not participate.”

Two Is the Luckiest Number for Henry Winkler and Guillermo del Toro

Henry Winkler won in the best actor category for two consecutive years (1977-1978) for his role as “The Fonz” in the TV comedy series Happy Days. This year, he’s nominated in the best supporting actor in a TV series/musical-comedy or drama category for Barry, previously earning a best supporting actor nod for the same role in 2020. Should Winkler win, he would be the first to be awarded for both lead and supporting performances in a comedy series. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro was nominated in animated feature for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and would become the first animation director to have previously won a Golden Globe for live-action directing after winning in 2017 for The Shape of Water.

The Golden Globe’s Nominee Diversity Is a Mixed Bag

Despite the Golden Globes naming two female filmmakers in a row as best director winners, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland and Jane Campion for Power of the Dog, no woman was nominated this year in the best director category, nor did any female-helmed films garner honors in the best picture drama, best picture musical/comedy or best non-English language feature categories.

Only Turning Red‘s Domee Shi was nominated in the best animated feature category, a nom that marks her as the first woman of color to direct a best animated feature-nominated movie.

There were, however, notable performer nominations across gender, race and age. That includes Steve Martin, a seven-time Globe nominee, whose latest nod for best television actor in a musical or comedy series for Only Murders in the Building has made him the oldest man nominated in the category. Meanwhile, Wednesday‘s Jenna Ortega has nabbed the number two spot as the second youngest competitor in the history of the best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy series category.

Among Black talent, Dahmer star Niecy Nash’s nomination could put her on the path to becoming the one of the first Black actresses to win a Globe for any limited series, while Viola Davis’ best actress in a drama nomination for The Woman King could give the two-time nominee her first win and third win ever in the category for a Black actress.

Everything Everywhere All at Once star Michelle Yeoh could also make history for Asians at this year’s ceremony thanks to her nomination for best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy. That nom — and a potential win — makes her the first Malaysian Chinese actress to be honored in the category. Her co-star, Ke Huy Quan, could also make history as the next Asian man — of which there are less than 10 nominated and only three who have won — to take home the honor in the category.

Mexican actor and Babylon star Diego Calva could also become one of a handful of Latino nominated actors along with fellow Mexican actor Diego Luna in Globes’ history. Calva, who is nominated for best actor in a drama motion picture, follows in the footsteps of artists like fellow Mexican-born actor José Ferrer, who won in the same category in 1951 for Cyrano de Bergerac. Meanwhile, Luna’s nomination for best actor in a TV drama for Andor shares small-screen company with the likes of NYPD Blue‘s Jimmy Smits.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’s campaign mode takes players through the missions of Task Force 141 and the Los Vaqueros, where the operators take down Major Hassan Zyani and stop terrorist activities in America. The missions in the game are inspired by various movies and real-life scenarios, as it draws inspiration from different predicaments. Movie lovers more inclined to watch Hollywood war and action movies would be familiar with the various scenes in the Modern Warfare 2 campaign’s story. A related article at QM Games inspired the story. Let’s look at the top 5 movies that likely inspired the Modern Warfare 2 game.

5 Movies That Likely Inspired Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Game

Modern Warfare 2 continues with the storyline of the 2019 reboot, Modern Warfare, but takes place now. There are some iconic locations that you would have noticed from the following movies while also entangling the campaign missions with several scenarios.

The Bourne Trilogy

While this isn’t exactly a war movie, it does have some nifty action sequences that can be seen in Modern Warfare 2. Also, the tech used in the movies is likely the inspiration for what is being used in the game. Some movie scenes resonate well with certain sequences within the campaign mode, especially the involvement of the operators and the CIA in both the movies and the game.

Black Hawk Down

The perfect war movie that inspires many search, rescue, and detains games. Several of Modern Warfare 2’s missions revolve around finding the arms dealer, while also being trapped or secluded at various stages. The action sequences alone can draw similarities between the operators’ fight for survival in the game and on-screen as well.

Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor’s downhill battle parallels Modern Warfare 2’s Cartel Protection. The fight sequence is eerily similar to when the operators try to get down the mountains. Couple that with the gunfight between the terrorists and the operators, Lone Survivor seems like an inspiration for MW2.

Sicario

MW2’s hunt for the cartel mirrors the scenes from Sicario. Several scenes from the movie go hand in hand with the hunt for the cartel leader by Task Force 141. The shootouts in MW2 alone will give a nod to the border shootout in Sicario.

Zero Dark Thirty

The thriller aspect of the movie shows up greatly in MW2’s campaign, as the hunt for the terrorist leader leads the operators into tight spaces. Zero Dark Thirty has twists and turns that mimic the situation of the campaign missions. The movie and the game can cause quite an adrenaline rush.

While the campaign missions in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 draw several similarities to the screen and real life, it is still a unique concept and has been thoroughly enjoyed by players worldwide.

Brazilian father kills his four children using a pillow and knife ‘to get ‘revenge on their mother, 24, after she left him’

  • Police arrested David da Silva Lemos, 28, for stabbing his four children to death
  • The bodies of the victims were found in the suspect’s home in Alvorada, Brazil
  • He told police he had plied the children with a ‘tea’ to pacify them beforehand

A Brazilian father has killed his four children with a pillow and a knife to allegedly get ‘revenge’ on their mother after she left him.

The bodies of the victims — aged three, six, eight, and 11 — were found in the suspect’s home in Alvorada, southern Brazil, on Tuesday.

Police arrested David da Silva Lemos, 28, in a hotel in neighbouring Porto Alegre early the next day.

He told police he had plied the children with a ‘tea’ to pacify them, before suffocating them with a pillow and stabbing them to death.

David da Silva Lemos, pictured bottom left, stabbed his four children to death on Tuesday, pictured, reportedly to get revenge on their mum, who is not being pictured

The children were found dead in the house with stab wounds in the front and back in Alvorada around 7.30pm on Tuesday, when family members called the police.

He was taken to the police station, where he then exercised his right to remain silent.

The victims’ maternal grandmother believes he killed the youngsters to get ‘revenge’ on their mother, from whom he had recently split.

Idenise Martins da Silva told local media: ‘He had already attacked my daughter.

‘Their relationship had ended for good, but he did it to get to my daughter — I’m sure of it — in the worst way possible. He is a coward.’

The victims are pictured from left to right: Donavan Antunes Lemos, 8, Yasmin Antunes Lemos, 11, Giovanna Antunes Lemos, 6, and Kimberlly Antunes Lemos, 3, and an unidentified woman pose in undated photo

He had been given a restraining order after assaulting his partner leading up to the murders, local media confirmed.

Deputy Edimar Machado, responsible for the investigations, said: ‘We will also try to analyse the cell phone that he was seized with him to see if he had any circumstances on his cell phone with reference to the crime, the threats he was making against the mother of the children, to raise more evidence of his participation in the crime.’

Police say the couple had been together for 12 years but separated after Lemos assaulted his partner in September.

The 24-year-old victim had reported the incident to police and taken out a restraining order against him.

Relatives said that at the time of the killings, the children had been staying with their father and had been due to go back to their mother in the coming days.

Police said Lemos had sent his ex-partner threatening messages shortly before the time the killings are believed to have been carried out.

The victims have been named as — from youngest to eldest — Kimberlly, Giovanna, Donavan, and Yasmin Antunes Lemos.

It’s officially Christmas movie season — in fact, at the Hallmark Channel, it begins in October. While there have been changes behind-the-scenes at the network, one thing remains the same: Their holiday cheer.

The channel first launched “Countdown to Christmas,” during which more than 20 new holiday movies premiere between October and December, in 2010. In 2013, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries rolled out their own version of “Countdown to Christmas” with “Miracles of Christmas” (originally “The Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas” and then “The Most Wonderful Miracles of Christmas”), airing at least 15 original movies during the same months.

“Christmas Under Wraps,” starring Candace Cameron Bure and David O’Donnell, debuted in 2014 and still holds the record for Hallmark’s highest-ever broadcast premiere ratings. Bure stars in four of the 10 most-viewed Christmas movies on the network, which also include “Switched for Christmas,” “The Christmas Train” and “A Royal Christmas.”

Here, Variety ranks the best Hallmark holiday movies to rewatch this year.

Higher Ground, the media company from Barack and Michelle Obama, has hired podcast executives from Spotify and Pushkin Industries to expand its audio division.

Corinne Gilliard, most recently a senior executive for Spotify’s studios and partnerships division, has joined Higher Ground as svp documentaries. During her time at the audio giant, she led partnerships with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Higher Ground, which ended its pact with Spotify and struck a multiyear first-look deal with Audible in June. Gilliard also served as the executive producer on podcasts like The RapCaviar Podcast, Sound Barrier: Sylvester, Dope Labs and Abolition X and, in 2017, was hired as the first head of development at Crooked Media. Outside of audio, Gilliard was a senior producer on Oprah Winfrey’s CBS primetime special interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Higher Ground has also tapped Nick White from Pushkin Industries, where White serve as an executive producer on projects like a biography of Paul Simon based on 30 hours of conversation between the musician, Malcolm Gladwell and Bruce Headlam. Before Pushkin, White worked at KCRW and created the documentary podcast Lost Notes.

Rounding out the new hires is Andrew Eapen, a sound engineer and composer whose work has appeared on To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Shameless and Jane the Virgin, as well as podcasts like Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen’s Renegades: Born in the U.S.A. and Dateline NBC’s The Thing About Pam.

Internally, Higher Ground has promoted Higher Ground Audio VP Mukta Mohan, who first joined the company in 2020 from Crooked Media, to the new role of head of audio content.

“We’re bolstering our incredible audio team by bringing in outside superstars and elevating our stellar internal talent,” Dan Fierman, Higher Ground’s head of audio, said. “The future of audio at Higher Ground is very bright.”

“Escape from New York,” John Carpenter’s post-apocalyptic masterpiece, has constantly been threatened with a remake. Everyone from now-disgraced action auteur Brett Ratner to “The Invisible Man” mastermind Leigh Whannell has taken a crack at the material over the years. But it seems like a remake is closer than its ever been, thanks to a new version from the filmmaking team Radio Silence (Tyler Gillett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella).

Villella recently told Entertainment Weekly that the project is in “very, very early stages” and get this – it’s not a remake but a continuation of the original.

The “Escape from New York” from 1981 followed criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), who is recruited to save the President (Donald Pleasence) after his plane goes down in New York City, now a walled-off penal colony full of the worst of the worst. Defined largely by its believably decayed production design (assisted by a young James Cameron), a supporting cast full of colorful character actors (including Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Isaac Hayes, Tom Atkins, Harry Dean Stanton and Adrienne Barbeau) and Carpenter’s evocative electronic score, it has endured as a true cult classic and one of Carpenter’s very best films.

It was followed by a sequel, 1997’s “Escape from L.A.,” which reunited Russell and Carpenter but felt somewhat watered-down. (Plans for a third film “Escape from Earth,” were shuttered, but some elements made it into Carpenter’s “Ghosts of Mars.”)

Since at least 2007, attempts at a remake have been made, with Gerard Butler at one point attached as Snake and filmmakers like Len Wiseman, Breck Eisner, Robert Rodriguez and Whannell all circling the project at one point or another. Now Radio Silence have boarded are are assuring fans that it won’t be a remake after all.

“We’re very excited to be working with 20th Century on that,” Villella told EW, as he previewed Radio Silence’s upcoming “Scream VI.” “We’re developing our take, and hopefully, it will be going to script sometime in the New Year, and just really starting to lay the groundwork for that. But very early stages.”

“Not a remake,” added Gillett. “That’s one of those properties that you can’t [remake], it’s sort of untouchable to us, and lives in its own stratosphere in terms of how important it is to us, and how much we love it. So it’ll be not unlike ‘Scream,’ I think, a nod to, and a continuation of, what we love about those characters and that world.”

While rumors have circulated for years that Wyatt Russell would be part of the remake, could he actually be part of this sequel? Could Snake have a son?

Holiday shoppers are sending a message to retailers: Lower your prices.

U.S. shoppers pulled back on spending just as the holiday season began, a sign that high prices and rising interest rates are shifting consumer spending habits.

Retail sales fell in November by 0.6%, the biggest drop in nearly a year, after rising 1.3% in October, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. The drop reverses a traditional annual pattern wherein consumers ramp up spending in November to take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.

Shoppers spent less on electronics, furniture, clothing, and sporting goods—both online and at department stores. Spending did increase in some areas, including at food and beverage retailers and health and personal care stores. But the data shows that Americans are being more selective about what they buy.

“Consumers are very hesitant to pay full price this year,” says Ted Rossman, a senior industry analyst at Bankrate. “This is perhaps the strongest evidence yet that consumers are pulling back, and it comes at a critical time of year for retailers.”

Although inflation is starting to ease, consumers are still seeing high prices almost everywhere. The Labor Department said this week that prices rose 7.1% in November from the same month a year before, slowing from 9.1% in June, which was the highest in four decades. Many economists believe retailers need to aggressively lower their prices in order to incentivize consumers to spend.

“The most important takeaway from this report is that if retailers do not bring prices down, more than what they have done so far, they might not be able to sell as many goods as they want,” says Eugenio Alemán, chief economist at Raymond James. “My guess is that they are going to discount goods in December at a larger rate than last year and that will produce a better holiday retail season.”

The consumer pullback raises fears that the Federal Reserve’s relentless campaign to curb inflation with a series of interest rate hikes is tipping the economy into a recession. The central bank said this week that it will continue hiking rates through 2023.

Markets reacted to the consumer pullback and the Fed’s decision to raise interest rates, as stocks fell sharply on Thursday: The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 763 points, or 2.25%, the S&P 500 lost 2.48%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 3.23%. It was the worst day for the Dow Jones since September as investors fear a recession is looming, during which economic output, employment and consumer spending typically drop.

Read more: A Recession Is Widely Expected. Here’s How to Prepare

The drop in November spending is particularly worrisome for retailers that thrive on holiday shopping or sell a wide range of goods. Costco Wholesale Corp. said last week that sales growth slowed slightly in the most recent quarter as shoppers cut back on big-ticket discretionary items. At Walmart and Target, executives have said that shoppers are being more selective about what they take home, giving priority to spending on food and other necessities and forgoing spending on electronics and furniture.

This past Thanksgiving weekend, which included Black Friday and Cyber Monday, nearly 200 million Americans shopped in stores or online, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF), an industry trade group. Shoppers spent an average of $325 during that span, up 8% from last year.

Claire Tassin, a retail and e-commerce analyst at Morning Consult, says more shoppers are choosing to give gift cards and apparel this holiday season in order to keep their spending within budget. “There’s kind of a practical bent to what people are gifting this year,” she says, adding that retailers started announcing discounts and promotions in October, well before Black Friday.

Still, analysts are divided over what consumer spending will look like in December, when retailers try to entice last-minute shoppers to purchase holiday gifts. NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz says consumers are doing a decent job dealing with the higher inflation, and he expects spending will rebound around Christmas time.

“Our expectation is that there will be an even higher number of people shopping [this December] compared to a year ago,” Kleinhenz says. “Christmas doesn’t fall until Sunday this year so you’ve got the weekend and a full five, possibly six days, of shopping ahead of you.”

Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro is widely considered to be an honorary Torontonian and rightfully so. The filmmaker has been in Toronto for more than a decade, shooting two to three projects a year.

To him, Toronto is the perfect city, “in the sense that it’s very livable, except for the construction and winter,” he laughed.

Del Toro was in Toronto on Sunday for a special screening of his new Netflix film, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” which is already garnering awards season buzz. The film was nominated for three Golden Globes, including Best Animated Feature.

“The first time I came here was in 1996 and I loved the crew. It was a horrible experience with the studio for ‘Mimic,’ but it was a great experience with the crew that I came back for ‘Pacific Rim,’” he said in an interview, referring to his time working alongside the Weinsteins at Miramax.

The city offers “great restaurants, great bookstores, great galleries, great cultural life, really amazing crews … I live about five minutes from the studio so I take my car and come back for lunch.”

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” feels a lot more personal to him; he not only co-directed the film alongside Mark Gustafson, he co-wrote it with Patrick McHale.

“I’m always very intrigued by stories that question what it is to be human. ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘Pinocchio’ are my main favourites. It’s almost like one of the most universal stories,” del Toro said.

“‘Pinocchio’ was the second or third movie I saw with my mum as a kid. And the first movie I thought captured how scary childhood felt. It didn’t feel like the cartoons on TV; it didn’t feel like it was happy and funny. It felt sort of dire and scary.”

The Mexican-born filmmaker radiates joy and earnestness in his conversation about filmmaking and stop-motion animation. He believes it’s not a genre just for families and children; hence, he treats the material like any other movie.

He said kids need to be told the truth about the complexity of the world without any sanitization. The film’s darker themes about life, death and loss are explored with honesty and care.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” reimagines the classic Carlo Collodi tale of the fabled wooden boy as Geppetto brings Pinocchio to life after the death of his son, Carlo. Together, they go on an enchanted adventure that reveals the power of love between a parent and a child.

“The movie is a very elaborate piece of filmmaking, but an incredibly pure act of love,” del Toro said.

It is indeed a beautiful love letter that explores the parent-child dynamic with heart and humour, and Del Toro understands this theme very well.

“I think that it is such a natural story for me because I had a very interesting relationship with my dad. He was very loving in his own way, but he could be really strict and aloof, and in a second he could change. I made it a point to say, ‘I’m gonna do the opposite of what he did so I will not make the same mistakes with my kids.’ But when my kids became teenagers, they told me I was doing the exact same thing that he did! And I realized I was repeating the same mistake,” he laughed.

“We tend to inherit mistakes and I think Geppetto is idealized in Carlo and not looking at who Pinocchio is. The movie takes him through that journey until he understands how much he loves Pinocchio and he is his son as much as Carlo.”

Del Toro believes many will call their parents right after watching this movie, as did I, and he says that it is the desired effect and vice versa. “My hope is that parents call their kids too and say ‘I’m sorry.’”

For him, this film is more than an apology, it’s about forgiveness. “An apology finishes a discussion and forgiveness starts it. It’s so beautiful to be able to talk about these things with your parents or your kids.”

Del Toro lost his father five years ago and he was able to make peace with that, which in turn helped deepen the screenplay. It’s no wonder that the film has the fingerprints of fatherhood, grief and loss.

“I think it’s going to sound very corny, but when I’m writing I cry. It affects me,” del Toro said. “Every time we see the movie, and we were in the mixing room and in the colour correction, Mark, myself, the cinematographer or the mixers, we cry. There is a purge that happens. The movie sort of works in that way and it helps every time.”

Del Toro is a highly regarded filmmaker whose work often explores humanity in all sorts of monsters and creatures, from “Pan’s Labyrinth” to his Oscar-winning “The Shape of Water.”

To him, they are as real as if they existed physically, he said. He had a lot of imaginary friends growing up and, while he knew they weren’t real, they felt real. “There is a certain … I wouldn’t say innocence, but there’s a certain purity to the way I see these things. That is very Mexican … We have a very permeable membrane with magic.”

It’s clear the 58-year-old is an old soul who speaks profoundly about love and loss, and it’s evident in his films — he admitted he felt 70 when he was only seven years old.

“I think that the biggest lesson in this entire life is to learn not to cope, but to welcome loss. When you don’t want to hold onto something is when you are finally free. Every time we want to hold onto something, we belong to that. When I was a kid and a young director, I had a huge collection of things. And now I’m 58 and I want to get rid of everything. I feel like it owns me.”

“Pinnochio” echoes themes he often explores with his other films: religion, childhood and fascism.

“I think we are broken by family and by institutions when we are young and then you try to make an art form of that,” he said. The example he gives is that of kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with resin and gold. “The scars are the beauty of the object and I think that’s what art does for our soul. We’re broken into many pieces as kids … So the scars I have come from violence and religion and authoritarianism, totalitarian thought, etc,” he said candidly.

Even after another successful film release, Del Toro has no plans to slow down: he’s working on a live-action film right now and then will do a slow-motion adaptation of a novel by a Nobel Prize winner. He will be shooting his next film in Toronto.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” is now streaming on Netflix.

The show is based on a massively bestselling 2008 novel of the same name by historical romance writer Kristin Hannah, following the ups and downs between best friends Talullah “Tully” Hart and Kate Mularkey. Hannah told Netflix’s Tudum that she’d wanted to fill a market gap for younger boomer women, who’d been relatively absent from pop culture. So she wrote an “epic anthemic novel about women’s friendships that included all the music and the ambition and the things that we were struggling with in my generation.”

The book, which sold 1.2 million copies, follows the pair from their ’70s teen years through their struggles as career women juggling relationships in the ’80s and ’90s and into the early aughts.

The series is Grey’s Anatomy star’s Katherine Heigl’s big comeback — as both actor and producer — after she was half-banished from the industry’s A-list following some movie flops and industry chatter about her being a “difficult” woman (for calling out workplace harassment and the churning TV economy). Tully is Firefly Lane’s central character, an ambitious newscaster turned talk show host who struggles to let people into her life, except for her best friend, writer Kate (played with goofy allure by Scrubs star Sarah Chalke).

When the first season came out last year, the series shot to no. 1, stayed in Netflix’s top ten for weeks, and was quickly renewed. (Netflix is notoriously guarded about numbers, but reported that Firefly Lane got 49 million views within its first 28 days.)

Upon its release two weeks ago, the first nine episodes of the second season also quickly reached the top of the streamer’s list and has remained in the top three since then; a final installment is coming in summer 2023.

Firefly Lane didn’t get great reviews; critics took issue with the structurally messy way it moves around the three timelines. But the storytelling clearly strikes a chord. And its populist appeal and frothy charm rely on a commitment to treating friendship as equivalent to romance, and unpacking the utopian possibilities of friendship for women.

The show lavishes as much detail on the friends’ backstory as The Notebook did on its lovers’. The girls meet when Tully and her single mom move to Kate’s neighborhood in Washington state. (The book was partly inspired by Hannah’s years growing up in Sonoma, Washington, and attending the University of Washington.)

From the start, the series traffics in tropes. Tully is the pretty one and Kate is supposedly the awkwardly nerdy one, a duality stereotypically conveyed through Kate’s Coke-bottle glasses. (Talented actors Roan Curtis and Ali Skovbye play the ’70s teen versions of Kate and Tully.) The girl in the glasses convention of many teen movies typically symbolizes the “before” of a transformation undertaken to impress a boy — as in the ’90s rom-com She’s All That. Instead, here it’s used to create contrast in the budding friendship narrative.

As the show moves back and forth in time, we see how they were shaped as women, and what their friendship meant to each of them. Kate grew up in a “perfect” family with a stay-at-home mom and loving, respectful dad. Tully had to deal with a traumatized single mom, Cloud (Beau Garrett), who dealt with substance abuse issues and whom she had to basically parent.

The show gets at big themes of intergenerational trauma: how Tully’s relationship to her mom made it hard for her to trust people, making her friendship with Kate a valued safe space. In one scene, her hippie mom, uncomfortable with the uptight suburban vibe, acts out at a party, accidentally flashing a crowd of dads. A fight between Tully and Kate over a boy becomes secondary, as Kate understands that she has to care for her friend in the aftermath of Cloud’s behavior.

From Emmy Award-winning producer Howard Gordon, the co-creator of landmark television, such as Homeland, and the showrunner of 24, comes Accused – a collection of 15 intense, topical and exquisitely human stories of crime and punishment. Each episode is a fast-paced provocative thriller, exploring a different crime, in a different city, with an entirely original cast. Based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning crime anthology, Accused opens in a courtroom on the defendant, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial.

Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, the show holds a mirror up to current times with evocative and emotional stories. In the end, audiences will discover how an ordinary person gets caught up in extraordinary circumstances, and how one impulsive decision can impact the course of that life – and the lives of others — forever. Developed for American Television by Howard Gordon (Homeland, 24) and executive-produced by Gordon, Alex Gansa (Homeland, 24) and David Shore (House, The Good Doctor), Accused once again fearlessly takes on the hottest topics of our time.

Hulu released a first look at “How I Caught My Killer,” which is a true-crime docu-series that highlights the real-life stories behind unique homicide cases with in-depth interviews, authentic archival material and cinematic recreations all packaged together into a fresh spin in the genre.

Whether it’s a fraught letter to a friend, an urgent text message detailing a heated argument, a private diary entry describing a horrifying experience, or an ominous social media post revealing a motive for murder…these victims all leave a case-breaking clue that will one day help to solve their crime.

Every curated case details a complex portrait of a human being whose life was cut short by a killer that would have escaped justice if it hadn’t been for the victim’s own actions. Ultimately, the twists and turns of the investigations into these victim-solved crimes expose an awful truth in America today: our systemic failures as a nation all too frequently deny many citizens justice. Each episode forces us to confront the harsh reality that our system is blind to many underserved and invisible communities that make up a disproportionate percentage of the people who lose their lives to homicide every year.

The Max Original rock climbing competition series The Climb debuts Thursday, January 12 with three episodes, followed by three new episodes the following week, concluding with the final two episodes on January 26. The series is created by Aquaman star, Jason Momoa, through his production company On the Roam, legendary rock climber Chris Sharma, and The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), a part of Sony Pictures Television.

The competition series is a visually-arresting and life-changing adventure that represents the foundations of rock climbing and exploration of the human spirit. In this all-encompassing competition, amateur climbers are put through a rigorous series of mental and physical challenges, utilizing some of the most intimidating ascents in the world to crown the world’s best amateur climber with a prAna sponsored climbing ambassadorship and a $100,000 cash prize.

In the trailer, shared ahead of it’s premiere, Momoa talks about his passion for the outdoor sport, expressing: “climbing, it’s so rooted in my soul. It just opens your mind.” The pair are then seen hanging off sky-heigh granite walls and jumping into the water as Sharna explains that they first met when he began his career as a professional climber. This is definitely going to lead to some serious competition, dangerous stunts, and a ton of fun that will leave us all addicted.

Check out the trailer below:

The Climb is executive produced by Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman, Erin Gamble, and Matt Shanfield on behalf of The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), a part of Sony Pictures Television. Stanley Tucci is done searching Italy. At least for now.

The actor’s CNN show Searching For Italy has been canceled at the channel, part of a larger strategic change at the company.

In October CNN said that it would cut back on original programming produced by outside production companies. The decision was “based, in large part, on the ever-increasing cost of commissioning third-party premium content,” CNN CEO Chris Licht said in a statement at the time.

Tucci’s show is among the casualties, with RAW serving as producer on the program.

That being said, a source notes that Tucci also worked as an executive producer on the show, so he could work with the production partners to shop the program elsewhere. In addition, Tucci is EP on Searching For Mexico, led by Eva Longoria, which will debut on CNN in 2023.

“Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy is one of the most successful projects produced by CNN Original Series, garnering two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Program,” a CNN spokesperson said in a statement. “We want to thank the Stanley Tucci for his dream partnership. We look forward to collaborating on the upcoming Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico, for which he serves as an executive producer.”

Rom-com royalty joins forces for a life-swapping reality check in Your Place or Mine. Netflix has released it’s first look at it’s upcoming romantic comedy, Your Place or Mine, written by Aline Brosh McKenna (27 Dresses, The Devil Wears Prada, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) and serving as her big-screen directorial debut.

Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher lead the cast as Debbie and Peter, “best friends and total opposites” who learn a valuable life lesson from a little change of scenery. “She craves routine with her son in L.A.; he thrives on change in N.Y.,” reads an official Netflix logline. “When they swap houses and lives for a week, they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.”

Speaking with People about Your Place or Mine, Kutcher, 44, says signing up for the film was an “easy” decision, as he “finally got the opportunity” to collaborate with Witherspoon, 46, and McKenna, 55, “two women I have wanted to work with for years.” In addition to Kutcher and Witherspoon, the cast gets rounded out with Jesse Williams, Zoë Chao, Wesley Kimmel, Griffin Matthews, Rachel Bloom, Shiri Appleby, Vella Lovell, with Tig Notaro and Steve Zahn.

Here are the exclusive first look images:

“It’s perfect for Valentine’s Day, not just because it’s a love story, but really because there are a lot of different kinds of love in the movie. There’s parental love, friend love, and even love for a city that you live in,” McKenna said.

When asked about the film and why everyone should go see it, Witherspoon added,”Your Place or Mine is kind of a love letter to single moms everywhere. Even if your life didn’t perfectly work out the way you envisioned, there’s hope and there’s joy, and love can still be found.”

The film will release globally on Netflix, February 10, 2023.

There’s really nothing else that needs to be said other than “stream I Believe in Santa.” If you need some more nudging, though, I will tell you — a glazed look in my eyes and my hair tousled — that you can’t possibly prepare yourself for the gift that I Believe in Santa wants to give you. It is a gift, too — it’s like the gift you get from your aunt who thinks she knows you inside and out, but her version of you is still 11 years old and f’ing loves anime (you’ve never watched anime). The premise is deceptively simple: what if the guy you’ve been dating for five months suddenly reveals that he believes in Santa Claus? And not just in an earnest, I-believe-in-the-spirit-of-the-season kind of way, but rather he believes in Santa in an intensely devout way that he’s backed up with the kind of “logic” that you normally only see in manifestos. I cannot stress this enough: if you love bad movies, you will be entranced by I Believe in Santa.

Another week, another episode of the Scene 2 See podcast. I am your host Valerie Complex associate editor and film writer at Deadline Hollywood. On today’s episode is comedian Lil Rel Howery.

Now you may be wondering why this is posting on a Thursday morning instead of the usual Tuesday afternoon. The podcast has moved to Thursdays at 11:30am. This change allows for us to prep promotion leading up to the episode debut. There will be other changes coming, so stay tuned for those as well. Anyway, back to our guest!

Lil Rel Howery is a comedian, actor, writer, and producer who has occupied a variety of roles in film and television.

His breakout role as TSA agent in the Oscar-winning Get Out kinda made him a household name overnight. Starring in Get Out garnered him an MTV Movie award for Best Comedic Performance in a Movie, and a nomination for an IMAGE Award for Best Supporting Actor.

From there, his career went full speed ahead with a co-starring role in Netflix horror film Bird Box,  and other films like Brittany Runs a Marathon, Free Guy, Vacation Friends, six-time Oscar nominated film Judas and the Black Messiah and countless others.

For television, he acted as producer for his own Fox sitcom, REL. He made a guest appearance on Issa Rae’s Insecure and Lena Waithe Showtime Series The Chi. Lil Rel starred in the critically acclaimed NBC comedy series The Carmichael Show as Jerrod Carmichael’s brother, Bobby. Lil Rel also was an executive producer, wrote and starred in the Gleefully Absurd (Chicago Sun Times) weekly sketch comedy show Friends Of The People on TruTV. He’s accomplished so much, but none of this would have been possible without starting as a standup comedian.

His first hour standup special, RELEVENT, premiered in 2015 on Comedy Central. The hour was executive produced by Kevin Hart and was named one of “The 10 Best Stand-Up Specials of 2015” by Vulture. His second special,  premiered on HBO, in 2019, and his third show I Said It. Ya’ll Thinking It premiered last month on HBO. In his interview he talks about curating his comedy,  how strict observation helps him come up with hilarious material, and why his new comedy special is different from all the others.

Another week, another episode of the Scene

After five years, the lawsuit filed against Taylor Swift‘s 2014 single “Shake It Off” has officially been dropped.

A judge dismissed the case earlier this week according to EW, preventing it from going to trial in January. The lawsuit was dismissed once before, but was appealed a year later and has been ongoing ever since.

Sean Hall and Nathan Butler originally filed the lawsuit in 2017, claiming specific lyrics from “Shake It Off” were copyright infringement. The duo wrote 3LW’s “Playas Gon’ Play,” released in 2000, which contains lyrics similar to “Shake It Off.”

While Swift’s single says “the players gonna play, play, play, play, play” and “the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate,” it was previously deemed to be too generic of a statement to be protected under legal copyright. 3LW’s “Playas, they gonna play / And haters, they gonna hate” lyrics may have come first, but neither technically copies the other.

So it appears Swift and “Shake It Off” are in the clear … which means there’s no reason the singer/songwriter can’t move forward with re-recording and releasing new versions of not just that single but the entire album as well. These “Taylor’s Version” albums allow her to legally own her music, the original masters of which still belong to her previous label. She offered to purchase them, but the label refused … for some reason.

While a 1989 (Taylor’s Version) will come eventually, Swifties are convinced Speak Now is next in the running for a re-recording. That doesn’t mean Shake It Off couldn’t get a second single treatment — it wouldn’t be the first song from the album to re-release with the Taylor’s Version label.

Swift seems to have a busy 2023 ahead, but who’s to say she’s not already working on reclaiming more of her old music as I’m writing this? More news to come, I suppose.

The Hollywood Critics Association along with 2022

Our November 22 announcement of the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Award film nominees was already teetering on the precipice of excess cool. To have also revealed the 2023 television nominees at that juncture would have, quite frankly, been irresponsible – simply too much to squee! over at once. We know the anticipation has been building, but good things come to those who wait; today, we’re thrilled (!!!) to unveil this year’s nominated shows and performances, all of which made their TV/streaming debut during this year’s nomination window.

The 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards are happening March 4, returning as always (except for that one weird COVID year) to the beach in Santa Monica. For the third year, in addition to film categories, the Spirit Awards are recognizing uniqueness of vision, innovation and boldness in five television categories. Winners are chosen only by Members of Film Independent.

The 2023 television nominees were revealed on YouTube this morning by very special guest presenter Asia Kate Dillon (Billions, Orange is the New Black, John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum). Watch the full announcement below:

Once again: Spirit Awards winners are voted on exclusively by Film Independent Members! Be sure to join by December 20 to receive access to nominee screeners and full Spirit Awards Member benefits.

Here are this year’s nominees…

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) says seasonally adjusted home sales were down 3.3 per cent on a month-over-month basis in November.

The association says the move lower more than erased the gain seen in October and resumed the overall trend lower for the year.

Hoping for a steep drop in home prices next year? It’s unlikely, Royal LePage says

The drop came as the number of newly listed homes fell 1.3 per cent on a month-over-month basis in November.

Home sales and prices have fallen this year as rising interest rates have increased the cost of borrowing for Canadians.

Compared with a year ago, actual home sales in November were down 38.9 per cent compared with November 2021.

The actual national average home price was $632,802 in November, down 12 per cent from the same month last year.

Last month, Canadian home sales amounted to the first monthly gain since February, CREA said, but analysts said they didn’t expect the market to pick up just yet because conditions have sunk below pandemic highs.

The association revealed that sales totalled 35,380 in October, a 1.3 per cent increase from September.

CMHC reports annual pace of housing starts edged lower in November

The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled the

The action-adventure video game series God of War is getting a Prime Video TV adaptation from the makers of The Expanse and Uncharted.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab), the live-action series will be based on events seen in the critically-acclaimed God of War (2018). Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time, Uncharted) acts as showrunner and will be joined by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (The Expanse) in writing and producing the show alongside PlayStation Studios for Prime Video.

“God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios head of global television, said. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.” Here’s hoping it’s one of the best Prime Video shows ever made.

Adaptation nation

(Image credit: SIE Santa Monica Studio)

Little else is known about God of War’s TV adaptation, but we know it’ll follow the premise set out in the 2018 hit, with Kratos and his estranged son Atreus journeying to spread his late wife’s ashes from the highest peak of the Nine Realms.

The first God of War was released back in 2005, with the videogame series now boasting five games in total. God of War (2018) is the fourth game in the hit franchise, but its release saw developer Sony Santa Monica shaking things up. In particular, the game developer moved the franchise from its traditional Ancient Greek setting to one focused on Norse mythology. It’s unclear if Amazon’s God of War TV will also explore the story set out in the game’s sequel, God of War Ragnarök, which takes place three years after 2018’s God of War and was released earlier this year.

Amazon’s God of War series isn’t the only PlayStation-inspired TV show in the works. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is getting a live-action TV adaptation, which debuts on HBO Max on January 15, 2023. Meanwhile, live-action adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, and Gran Turismo have also been greenlit. Amazon Studios is also developing a live-action Fallout series for its streaming service, with Arcane and Yellowjackets star Ella Purnell set to feature.

There’s no official date for Amazon’s God of War yet, let alone any casting announcements. Whichever direction in which the show steers its course, though it’s sure to be in solidly good company.

Angela Bassett is having a great week. She has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It only adds to the buzz that she will also land her second career Oscar nomination for reprising the part in the Ryan Coogler sequel, in which she takes on new emotional heft with the loss of the Queen’s son King T’Challa as well as the beloved actor who played him, Chadwick Boseman. Of course, that is topic No. 1 as she joins the Deadline video series The Actor’s Side for this week’s episode.

Bassett is no stranger to awards, having won a Golden Globe, a SAG Award and seven Image Awards, as well as seven Emmy nominations and that Oscar nom as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It?

We also talk about playing Tina, as well as the long list of real-life icons she has brought to life on the screen like Betty Shabazz in Malcolm X; Violetta Wallace, the mother of Biggie Smalls; Rosa Parks; Coretta Scott King; Katherine Jackson; and even as the voice of Michelle Obama in a Simpsons episode. We also talk about her television work that includes numerous iterations and characters for American Horror Story, as well as her current Fox hit 9-1-1, for which she is also a producer.

Lots to discuss, so to watch our conversation and get the “actor’s side” from Angela Bassett click on the video above.

Join me every Wednesday during Oscar season for another edition of The Actor’s Side.

Henry Cavill’s return to the DCU was short-lived, with new DC head honcho James Gunn making the announcement himself via Twitter. This comes after weeks of speculation following a bombshell report that suggested Gunn and co-DC boss Peter Safran were shaking things up in a big way. That included dropping Wonder Woman 3. On Twitter, Gunn revealed that he himself is writing a Superman movie, albeit one with a different actor in the lead, saying it will be focusing on an earlier part of his life (but it will not be an origin tale).

Here are Gunn’s Tweets:

Cavill himself confirmed the news shortly after via Instagram:

While this is certainly sad news for Cavill, who, in what one hopes is a coincidence, opted to leave The Witcher following his Black Adam cameo, Gunn is leaving the door open to a future collaboration. He wrote: “we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Gunn also shot down the notion that Ben Affleck will return as Batman (outside his role in The Flash) but promises that the former Caped Crusader will be back in the DC fold as a director. Replying to a Twitter question, he wrote: “met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.’ He also teased that a full DC slate is ready to go and that he will reveal more details in the New Year.

While many may be bummed for Cavill, one has to give Gunn credit for getting out in front of the story following a slew of rumors.

Don’t feel too bad for Cavill, though, with him fronting what could potentially be a super spy franchise of his own via Apple TV Plus with Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle. He also just signed on to lead Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. And, let’s not forget he’s always been a favorite to one day play 007. Maybe one day Cavill will look back at his time as the Man of Steel in the same way Pierce Brosnan does when he thinks about Remington Steele.

Do you think Gunn’s new approach with Superman is a good one? Let us know in the comments.

EXCLUSIVE: Channel 4’s landmark documentary series about former Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre has been put on ice indefinitely.

Deadline understands The World According to Paul Dacre [working title] was derailed after filming was impacted due to Covid-19 delays and scheduling challenges. There is no suggestion the delay is due to editorial differences of opinion and a Channel 4 spokesman said the show has been “paused.”

The landmark from My Daughter’s Killer indie Rogan Productions was unveiled with fanfare three years ago and slated to launch in 2021.

Described as “telling the extraordinary story of how [Dacre] shaped the Mail as the voice of Middle England,” the former Editor was due to be interviewed extensively for the doc.

The show was an example of the way in which Channel 4 Chief Content Officer Ian Katz had set about ordering programs that negated accusations of left-wing bias directed at the commercial pubcaster.

Dacre is an arch-right-wing Brexiteer who was Editor of the right-wing Daily Mail for 26 years, overseeing major political events and accruing the paper a huge, dedicated readership. He is seen as one of the most influential British newspaper editors of all time.

Dacre left in 2018 and is currently Editor-in-Chief of DMG Media, which publishes The Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and the Metro. He was also in the running to be Chair of broadcasting regulator Ofcom and his hugely controversial run was covered extensively in the press, as it would have given him, amongst other things, regulatory influence over the BBC, an institution to which he was heavily critical.

Though superstition would suggest otherwise, the number “13” has been lucky for Ron Howard. The filmmaker won his first DGA Award for the 1995 hit “Apollo 13,” which documented the troubled 1970 lunar mission. Now he’s earning raves for “Thirteen Lives,” another true-life story about the 2018 effort to rescue a youth football team from the Tham Luang caves in Thailand.

Speaking with the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Howard discusses the making of “Thirteen Lives.” He admits that he briefly hesitated signing on because he wondered if the films would draw comparisons – not just for their titles: “I did recognize that in a lot of ways it was similar to ‘Apollo 13,’” Howard admits. “But then I began to feel, ‘Well, this is a great story.’ And there are some things that I learned from ‘Apollo 13’ that I can apply to this. But there’s a whole other set of challenges.”

Howard says he also realized there were other themes he wanted to explore – mainly that of volunteerism and “people who did not have to be there taking huge risks – physical, emotional, political, career. Just because they decided it was the right thing.” Listen below:

Howard has now embraced the comparison between his “13” films. He even recently participated in a double bill of “Apollo 13” and “Thirteen Lives” at the Aero Theatre, doing a Q&A between the two movies. Perhaps he needs one more “13” film to complete the trilogy – what about a “Friday the 13th” reboot or sequel?

Howard laughs at the idea. “Well, you know, there’s a certain kind of horror movie that I have not done that I would enjoy doing,” he says. “Probably not ‘Friday the 13th,’ the stalker thing is a little too intense for me.” But he is open to something involving “paranormal, supernatural, you know, monsters. Thing that we kind of know aren’t real.”

Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, “Thirteen Lives” details not only the rescue from the caves, but the people who took part in the effort to help, including farmers willing to flood their lands and divers volunteering for a seemingly impossible mission. Howard says the film ranks as one of his most challenging – but also rewarding – experiences: “I never had a project where there were fewer complaints.”

The story of “Thirteen Lives” and the story of making the film are both emotional, and it’s hard not to get choked up when the filmmaker talks about them. Howard also touches on other topics, including what it would take to get him to return to an acting gig. (Hint: It would probably have to be a project directed by his daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard. And he would completely expect her to make him audition. Laughs Howard, “I’d be a little disappointed if she didn’t.”)

Also on this episode, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett discusses her feelings about returning to the franchise after the death of star Chadwick Boseman. And she talks about the shocking twist in the sequel for her character, and how she felt about it at first. But first, the Awards Circuit Roundtable gives its Golden Globe nominations predictions.

It’s not a new thing to note that Amazon seems almost perpetually stuck in a game of catch-up when it comes to its Prime Video offerings. Even The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power—easily the most successful show in the streaming library’s offerings—came as a result of a multi-year plan to replicate the success of HBO’s Game Of Thrones. (Arriving, with no small irony, almost the same week as HBO’s own efforts to recreate that particular swords-and-sorcery magic.)

Now—as HBO gears up for the release of The Last Of Us, Craig Mazin’s big-budget adaptation of the critical video game darling of the same name—Amazon has announced that, well, it’s gonna do that, too: Per Variety, Bezos’ Boys have announced that they’re moving forward with a TV adaptation of Santa Monica Studios’ celebrated God Of War games.

We actually first wrote about this idea back in March, when Amazon first started sniffing around at the idea of bringing the voyage of Kratos, God Of War, and his son Atreus, Boy Of War, to the small screen. Now the show has been officially picked up to series, with Wheel Of Time’s Rafe Judkins serving as showrunner. (As much as “getting a full series order” means anything in these days of increasingly common take-backs on show orders, at least.)

The God Of War games are prime fodder for this sort of treatment, admittedly: Building on the earlier series of the action-adventure games of the same name from the PlayStation 2 and 3 eras, the game told an emotionally affecting story about family bonds and redemption, with a sequel, Ragnarok, bringing the series to a satisfying conclusion last month. Cory Barlog, creative director at Santa Monica, will serve as an executive producer on the show.

Gaming adaptations are becoming increasingly common of late: In addition to The Last Of Us (which debuts on January 15), Peacock is gearing up for a very weird-sounding adaptation of the Twisted Metal games, while Amazon is also developing a Fallout series with Walton Goggins in a starring role.

Comedian Groucho Marx began his career as part of The Marx Brothers, a comedy team famous for classic films like “Duck Soup” and “Animal Crackers.” Known for his spontaneous wit and distinctive mustached appearance, Groucho Marx’ wisecracking persona is one of the most iconic in comedy history.

Groucho Marx, supplied by Globe Photos, Inc.

With so many off-the-cuff zingers in person, especially during his time on “You Bet Your Life,” Grouch Marx quotes are often difficult to credit. Classics like “Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana,” which is frequently attributed to him, may be a misquote – though it is very possible Groucho Marx said the line at some point. The joke, “these are my principles. If you don’t like them, well, I have others” also dates back before the comedian’s use of the phrase. Similarly, Groucho himself denied ever saying the oft-cited insult, “I have had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn’t it.”

Here are ten jokes and witticisms from the comic.

1. “Although it is generally known, I think it’s about time to announce that I was born at a very early age.”

― Groucho Marx, from his autobiography, “Groucho and Me”

2. “Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.”

― Groucho Marx, “The Essential Groucho: Writings For, By and About Groucho Marx”

3. “I find television very educational. Every time someone switches it on I go into another room and read a good book.”

― Groucho Marx, “The Essential Groucho: Writings For, By and About Groucho Marx”

4. “Either this man is dead or my watch has stopped.”

― Groucho Marx in “Monkey Business”

5. “I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception.”

― Attributed to Groucho Marx

6. “If you find it hard to laugh at yourself, I would be happy to do it for you.”

― Attributed to Groucho Marx

7. “One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don’t know.”

― Groucho Marx in “Animal Crackers”

8. “If you’ve heard this story before, don’t stop me, because I’d like to hear it again.”

― Attributed to Groucho Marx

9. “Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you’re probably watching the wrong channel.”

― Attributed to Groucho Marx

10. “Why a four-year-old child could understand this report! Run out and find me a four-year-old child, I can’t make head or tail of it.”

Breaking another sad exit for DC. It has been announced via James Gunn and Henry Cavill himself that he will no longer be donning the cape for our beloved superhero. This comes as a shock to everyone because it was not only he announced October 29, 2022 he was exiting the Witcher series. He made his debut as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.  His last appearance was in the end credits of Black Adam.

What is going at DC Studios?

No one really knows what is going on at DC Studios but allegedly rumors that many things are in flux. Earlier today there was massive hysteria when Variety made a false story regarding the future of DC. Many fans took to twitter in a panic that an alleged “source” told Variety that Robert Pattinson’s Batman was going to be a part of the DCU. Gunn and Matt Reeves both took to twitter stating that this was in fact not true. Reeves will continue to have his own universe separate from the DCU unless things change. Gunn and Safran’s new leadership has many people worried.

Below please find statements made by Reeves and Gunn via twitter:

Now coming on the heels of all that, Gunn took to Twitter to announce that the new Superman will be in fact younger. Gunn stated on twitter “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” the director-turned-label-chief tweeted this evening. “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Ben Affleck who has donned the suit as the caped crusader previous to Pattinson has recently met with Gunn and Safran to specifically discuss the prospect of directing an upcoming DC feature. Gunn stated on his twitter tonight that they have plans for him to come back to direct. Many wanted him to return and become the DCU Batman, but unfortunately Affleck no longer wants to do that.

Below please find his tweet responding to a fan:

Just last week Wonder Woman’s director Patty Jenkins also opened up about her future with DC and said “There was nothing I could do to move anything forward”. She walked away from the project due to creative differences with the studio. She denied reports that she completely walked away from the film.

Below you will find her statement via Twitter:

Courtesy of Patty Jenkins

One thing is for certain they really know how to stirs things up and keep us on the edge of our seats. It is clear that Gunn and Safran want to start everything from scratch with a more younger cast. Stay tuned for more news that will be announced in the new year.

After decades of being locked out of Hollywood’s halls of power, women are taking more and more leadership positions at studios, networks, and other major companies in the entertainment industry. But even in c-suites, the specter of impostor syndrome can still appear.

Six Hollywood execs discussed those feelings of self-doubt as well as their push to bring more women into leadership roles at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit at the Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica. Panel moderator and TheWrap business reporter Raquel Harris cited a KPMG report in which female executives were surveyed and 75% said that they experienced feelings of being incapable for their jobs because of outside pressure despite being more than qualified.

Elizabeth Wright, EVP and CFO of Paramount’s direct to consumer division, said that countering that self-doubt is a daily process, always reminding oneself what they did to get where they are now.

“A lot of women I know are in roles where they might be one of the only females in the c-suite, and I think that definitely can be intimidating at times,” she said. “And I think it’s a matter of reminding yourself that you wouldn’t have been entrusted into that role if you didn’t put all the work in and improve yourself.”

Wright was joined on the panel by Aisha Summers Burke, EVP and Head of Creative at BET Studios; Jackie Hayes, EVP and General Counsel at Warner Bros. Discovery; Kayleen Walters, head of franchise development for the hit video game “Minecraft”; Melody Hildebrandt, Chief Information Security Officer at Fox and President of Blockchain Creative Labs; and Rahwa Ghebre-Ab, EVP and Chief Legal Compliance Officer for Lionsgate.

The group also talked about the importance of networking horizontally and how reaching out to others at the same stage in your career, especially in a non-transactional way, can be key to elevating women into major roles at companies in Hollywood and beyond. Burke and Ghebre-Ab talked about how they first met nearly a decade ago at a brunch created by Burke to help women of color in Hollywood network, and how the relationship that has lasted ever since began with talks that had nothing to do with work.

“We talked about what people want to do on the weekends, where they’re from, what they want to do outside of this job. And then I think by the end, I think we did [the brunch] for maybe two or three years. There were like 60 women there. And it was so inspiring to see all of these women of color all working in television all across different platforms,” Burke said.

“Continue meeting people and talk about things organically,” Ghebre-Ab added. “Ask about what they are interested in, not just what can you do for me.”

Hayes also said that with the boom in videoconferencing since the pandemic, she’s seen a rise in executives and other professionals networking via short, 15-minute Zoom meetings just to trade ideas about business. She advised the attendees that the best way to make a good impression in the eyes of executives who one day might remember them for a job opening years later is just to show open curiosity about how showbiz works.

“People love to talk about themselves, so if you just sort of admit you’re just interested in learning more about the business, you express curiosity and genuine interest…people are generally very happy to tell you about what they do and share insights,” she said.

The Power Women Summit (PWS) is the largest annual gathering of the most influential women in entertainment, media and technology. The event aims to inspire and empower women across the landscape of their professional careers and personal lives. This year’s PWS provides two days of education, mentorship, workshops and networking around the globe – to promote this year’s theme, “A Time to Unite.” Learn more here: thewrap.com/pws.

Latinos are underrepresented in all parts of entertainment in Hollywood. Still, there is a responsibility for those who make it onto movie and television screens to hold the door open for more people to join them.

“I don’t think we understand the responsibility that we have been given at this very moment,” actor Wilmer Valderrama says during the Latine Representation in Comic Books Virtual Panel. “For a couple of decades our stories have been paraphrased and stereotyped. While we show up on the screen, we are responsible for creating creative collaborations for the people who are telling our stories at this moment — until we have everyone who looks like us writing and directing.”

Watch the exclusive conversation above.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition hosted its first-ever superhero panel on Nov. 7 in partnership with Variety. NHMC brought together panelists from various parts of entertainment to discuss Latino representation in comic books. In addition to Valderrama, the other panelists included David Castañeda (“The Umbrella Academy”), Xochitl Gomez (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”), Gabriel Luna (“The Last of Us”), Yvette Monreal (“Stargirl”) and Carlos Valdes (“The Flash”). Brenda Castillo, NHMC CEO introduced the panel and conversation that Variety moderated.

During the conversation, the panel of actors and creators discussed the strides they see in representation and celebrating the success of Latinos in the superhero genre. In addition, they also discuss the challenges Latinos face going into the future.

Despite being the second largest ethnic group in the United States (and approximately 40% of the population in California), people of color remain woefully underrepresented as both directors and writers, according to the UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report. According to the UCLA Diversity Report, people of color represent less than 25.4% of film directors and less than 25% of film writers.

The NHMC was founded more than 36 years ago to eliminate hate, discrimination, and racism toward the Latino community. They support the next generation of Latino writers, directors and artists in Hollywood.

Valderrama was recently announced to star and executive produce a live-action “Zorro” series in development at Disney Branded Television. Castañeda will be in Rian Johnson’s Peacock series “Poker Face.”

After roles in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Luna will play Tommy Miller in HBO’s “The Last of Us” which premieres in January.

After 147 episodes playing Cisco Ramon on CW’s “The Flash,” Valdes has an upcoming role in the eight-episode series “Up Here” from “Hamilton” creator Thomas Kail.

Following America Chavez in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Gomez’s breakout will continue into the sci-fi thriller “Ursa Major” alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

And finally, Monreal wrapped up her time as Wildcat on “Stargirl” and is in pre-production for the TV series “More” from executive producer Greg Berlanti.

Much like Mumbai which has been described as “Maya Nagari”, or Magic City, where men and women go to realise their dreams and build fortunes, Japan’s Osaka enjoys a similar reputation. But, while most Indians travel to Mumbai, Osaka has been the home for different nationalities, like Koreans, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Chinese, Malays, Burmese, Nepalese and even Indians. Malaysian-born, Osaka-based writer-director Lim Kah Wai’s uses his city in his eighth feature, Come and Go, as a melting point of different cultures. More importantly, as a place where people gather to earn their livelihood, and the movie had its world premiere at the ongoing Tokyo International Film Festival.

Come and Go is a fascinating study of how hopes are raised, dreams come true and sometimes how disappointments depress you. With pacy energy, Lim presents a mosaic of characters. But since their numbers are large and their experiences varied, he cannot examine them in-depth, which is certainly a minus point. However, the movie affords a wonderful study of inter-racial tensions. The angst and joys of migrants are narrated through gripping stories.

Come and Go begins with the police finding the remains of an old woman, and when they question her neighbour, Iida (Jakujaku Katsura), he is blissfully unaware of her life. I may have run into her on the street, but know nothing about her, he tells the cops. Not surprising. For years, he has kept loneliness away by being a handyman to whoever needed him. He could repair just about anything! And this left him with little time for anything else.

Then there is a Burmese student, Mimi (Nang Tracy), who has to do two jobs so that she can pay her college fees. But life is not easy for her, given her boss’ unwelcome attention. Nam works with Mimi, and he wants to go home in Vietnam, because his mother is unwell. But his employer will not allow him to do so, because the contract says so.

Like most big metros, Osaka is also the centre of a thriving sex industry, and in one of the early scenes, we see how a young girl, Mayumi (Manami Usamaru) , is tricked into believing that she would get a part in a regular film. But it turns out that she has been called to audition for a blue film! At another scene, we see four prostitutes from Korea entering Osaka, and they are full of desires and dreams.

There is not just sex, but romance as well. A Nepali refugee, Mousan (Mousam Gurang) is having an affair, with an older married woman, Yoshiko (Makiko Watanabe). We can see the hopelessness of this affair.

Koichi Furuya’s lens paints a vibrant and textured canvas of Osaka, a city that becomes a character by itself, and I was reminded how the Palmyra trees in renowned Indian director Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Shadow Kill are transformed into characters as well.

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced a plan

Oscar nominated actor Adam Driver, who is known for his multitude of different roles and his versatility onscreen has had a very busy year, and things are about to get even more interesting for the talented actor in 2023. Adam who is best known for his roles in HBO’s Girls, playing Kylo Ren in the Star Wars franchise, House of Gucci, his Oscar nominated performances in Marriage Story and Blackkklansman and much more has some interesting projects lined up in the coming months.

Adam Driver has been nominated for a Golden Glode for his role in Noah Baumbach’s disaster movie, White Noise. “White Noise” received a three-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival with big cheers for Driver in particular. Adam Driver has been receiving praise from critics for his performance in the film. The film is a satirical take on the acclaimed 1985 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo. Driver plays professor Jack Gladney alongside Greta Gerwig. Their suburban life is upended when a nearby chemical leak causes “The Airborne Toxic Event,” releasing a noxious black cloud over the region that forces the Gladney family to evacuate.

White Noise is in in select theaters now and hits Netflix on December 30th.

If you thought Adam Driver was done with space, you were wrong. In the film 65, a science fiction thriller from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo that wrote the script for “The Quiet Place”, with Spider-Man’s Sam Raimi as a producer, Driver takes on the SciFi genre once again in a role like we’ve never seen him before.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills (Adam Driver) quickly discovers he’s stranded on Earth… 65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance at rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), must make their way across an unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures in an epic fight to survive.”

Driver is known for his dramatic roles, it has been a while since he was last in an action packed scifi film. Which is part of what makes this film so exciting for fans.

65 is scheduled to be released on March 10th, 2023.

And what’s a successful Adam Driver year without him taking on a biopic? Once again Driver will be bringing a true story to life. And once again It’s a member of a rich Italian family. This time, he will play racecar driver Enzo Ferrari in the biopic “Ferrari” about his lifestory, directed by Michael Mann.

Courtesy of Lorenzo Sisti

According to the film’s official synopsis “‘Ferrari’ is set during the summer of 1957. Ex-racecar driver Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy stalks the company he and his wife, Laura (Penelope Cruz), built from nothing 10 years earlier. Their tempestuous marriage struggles with the mourning for one son and the acknowledgement of another. He decides to counter his losses by rolling the dice on one race – 1,000 miles across Italy, the iconic Mille Miglia.”

This will be a transformative role for Driver as Ferrari will be around 59 years old in the film, whereas Driver is currently 39. The film is slated for a 2023 release.

In 2021 alone we got 3 new films Annette, The Last Duel, and House of Gucci, whereas in 2022 we saw only White Noise, Adam Driver has delivered a lot of great performances over the years, next year with 2 more new films coming up, that shouldn’t change anytime soon.

Netflix debuted the official trailer for their new suspenseful heist drama, Kaleidoscope, a crime that took 25 years in the making that we can crack open in the New Year. The series executive produced by Russell Fine, Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Justin Levy with Automatik Entertainment; Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, Jordan Sheehan and Clayton Krueger with Scott Free Productions; and Garrett Lerner.

What is the show about?

The series will be spanning 25 years, Kaleidoscope is an all-new anthology series following a crew of masterful thieves and their attempt to crack a seemingly unbreakable vault for the biggest payday in history. Guarded by the world’s most powerful corporate security team, and with law enforcement on the case, every episode reveals a piece of an elaborate puzzle of corruption, greed, vengeance, scheming, loyalties and betrayals. How did the crew of thieves plan it? Who gets away with it? Who can be trusted?

Very loosely being inspired by the real-life story where seventy billion dollars in bonds went missing in downtown Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy. Kaleidoscope consists of eight episodes spanning from 24 years before the heist to 6 months after. The compelling crime anthology series takes a non-linear approach to storytelling, building intrigue and suspense uniquely, with Netflix members each having a different immersive viewing experience. Some members may start with certain episodes (like episodes “Yellow or “Green”), then move deeper into their own personal viewing order with varying episodes (“Blue” or “Violet” or “Orange,” followed by “Red” or “Pink”) until the epic “White: The Heist” story finale.

Who are the characters?

The Crew of Thieves

LEO PAP – THE MASTERMIND-The Leader. Leo is whip-smart, intense and driven, with an engineer’s mind and a meticulous eye for detail. He became a thief at a young age — and though he had a chance to get out, he couldn’t stay away from the criminal life and his relapse cost him his family and his freedom.

AVA MERCER – THE WEAPONS SPECIALIST-An attorney by day, she is equally at home on a gun range or gallery show as she is in the courtroom. Although she plays things fast and loose, deep down she’s a passionate soul who will do anything to protect the few people close to her.

JUDY GOODWIN – THE EXPLOSIVES EXPERT-The crew’s demolitions specialist, Judy is headstrong and independent — an eccentric spitfire with a sarcastic edge who is clever and talented enough to stay a step ahead of her mistakes.

BOB GOODWIN – THE SAFE CRACKER- A chest-puffing alpha male with a knack for safecracking and pushing people’s buttons, Bob is attractive enough to be a threat and smart enough to be dangerous to anyone who gets in his way when he’s on the hunt.

STAN LOOMIS  – THE SMUGGLER-A small-time smuggler with a big-time passion for life’s epicurean pleasures, Stan’s got a mouth that never stops running and the heart of a hopeless romantic. Loyal to a fault, he’s willing to risk it all for the object of his desire — even if it means giving up the comfortable life he’s built for himself.

RJ ACOSTA, JR – THE DRIVER-Shaggy and technical-minded, RJ is a self-taught engineer, a brilliant mechanic and car customizer, and a driver extraordinaire. What he excels in tech know-how, he lacks in common sense and people skills, but his loyalty to Leo knows no bounds. When he’s invited to join the crew, he jumps at the chance to prove his worth.

The Corporate Security Team with the Unbeatable Vault

ROGER SALAS  – THE CORPORATE SECURITY TITAN-A former thief who has reinvented himself as a top tier security expert, Roger is a salesman with an uncanny ability to manipulate people to his ends. Loyal, to a point, but his own ambitions and needs will win out every time.

HANNAH KIM  – THE PROTÉGÉ-Intelligent, ambitious, and adaptable, Hannah is a woman who wears many hats — and is driven by far more than money. As a chameleon who flows between the world of high-stakes finance and low-lying crime, she will have to use everything in her bag of tricks to find a way up and out.

LIZ KIM – THE SISTER-Liz is Hannah’s younger sister, a free spirit and aspiring DJ/immersive dance captain. She’s a source of joy to Hannah, but her laissez-faire attitude conflicts with Hannah’s deep work ethic. Together, they’ll have to find a way to support each other and work hand-in-hand if they want to come out on top.

CARLOS SUJO – THE HENCHMAN-Carlos is Roger Salas’s right-hand man and head of security — not just for the company, but for Roger himself. Loyal and intense, Carlos is the one who Roger turns to when he needs something handled off-book. Very few people really understand what Carlos does for Roger, but they all know it’s best to leave him a wide berth and not get in his way.

The Agents On The Case

NAZAN ABBASI- THE DRIVEN AGENT-Driven, damaged and tenacious to a fault, FBI Agent Nazan Abassi is the raging fire that threatens to burn the crew of thieves down— as long as those flames don’t consume her first.

AGENT SAMUEL TOBY – THE PARTNER-Special Agent Samuel Toby is a boy scout in the FBI, the kind of guy who’d take a strawberry milkshake over a vodka on the rocks. He’s got a sharp mind, and an immense admiration for fellow Agent Nazan Abbasi that seeps over from professional to personal. He’s attracted to her intelligence and skill in the field and devotedly aids her as she attempts to track down the crew. But when he realizes Nazan is way too deep into her obsession, he’ll have to choose whether his priorities lie in being on the right side of his career, or the right side of justice.

Episodes

Every episode is a puzzle piece as viewers watch episodes in unique orders, entering the heist at different moments in time. All viewers will eventually see all episodes, but the order in which they watch the episodes will affect their viewpoint on the story, the characters, and the questions and answers at the heart of the heist. How will you experience the colors of Kaleidoscope?

Episode titles are as follows:

“Yellow: 6 Weeks Before The Heist”
“Green: 7 Years Before the Heist”
“Blue: 5 Days Before the Heist”
“Violet: 24 Years Before the Heist”
“Orange: 3 Weeks Before the Heist”
“Red: The Morning After the Heist”
“Pink: 6 Months After”
“White: The Heist” the epic story finale.

The anthology series features an all-star cast consisting of Giancarlo Esposito who will be playing Leo Pap. Paz Vega will be playing Ava Mercer. Rufus Sewell will be playing Roger Salas. Tati Gabrielle will be playing Hannah Kim. Peter Mark Kendall will be playing Stan Loomis. Rosaline Elbay will be playing Judy Goodwin. Jai Courtney will be playing Bob Goodwin. Niousha Noor will be playing Nazan Abbasi. Jordan Mendoza will be playing RJ Acosta, Jr. Soojeong Son will be playing Liz Kim and finally Hemky Madera will be playing Carlos Sujo.

Everyone will be ringing in the new year watching this because the series will be premiering worldwide on January 1, 2023 on Netflix.

This morning Universal Studios Hollywood revealed the opening date for its new Super Nintendo World next year. But in 2025 Universal Orlando Resort is going to have an even bigger opening when its third gate, the appropriately named Epic Universe, opens to the public. This makes the next few years key to Universal Parks & Resorts, which makes the fact that three major executives just took early retirement somewhat surprising.

According to The Wrap, Thierry Coup, the CCO of Universal Creative, the division that’s similar to Walt Disney Imagineering, is in charge of creating attractions in all of Universal’s five global parks and resorts, has decided to take early retirement. That on its own would be notable, but it’s also being reported that Mike Hightower, President of Universal Creative, and Mike Harrington, Vice President, engineering and safety at Universal Studios Florida, are doing the same.

“I would love to and I’ve talked to many people about it. And I’ve come close to a few ideas,” Aronofsky said of bringing his 2010 classic to the stage — or screen again — in musical form.

Darren Aronofsky might see a little of himself in ballerina Nina Sayers when it comes to perfectionism.

That may be why, 12 years after his cult classic “Black Swan” first thrilled and chilled audiences, he still hasn’t made a musical version of the movie happen. It would seem like an inevitability given the Tchaikovsky source material and the film’s grand theatrics, costuming, and over-the-top characters. Still, as “The Whale” director revealed to The AV Club in a recent interview, he’s working on it.

“We’re trying to do the ‘Black Swan’ musical,” the Oscar-nominated filmmaker said. When asked if it would be on Broadway, he said, “We’ll see what happens. But we’re working on it.”

As for whether or not the “Black Swan” musical would be a movie musical, Aronofsky said it’s tricky: “I would love to and I’ve talked to many people about it. And I’ve come close to a few ideas. It’s a very tricky thing because music from musicals is not popular music anymore. So what do you do? I think Hamilton was brilliant because Lin-Manuel Miranda fused hip-hop with musical music. And so he had this breakthrough that was really brilliant. But figuring that angle of it, of what the music would be, where it comes from, is the big challenge. But I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it. And hopefully one day I could figure something out.”

“Black Swan” was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, winning Best Actress for Natalie Portman’s emotionally charged turn as Nina. The movie grossed nearly $330 million at the global box office, making the film his biggest success only to “Noah” internationally. His A24 film “The Whale” is already a minor indie hit with $360,000 in receipts after an opening weekend in limited release.

“Black Swan,” meanwhile, isn’t the only project for which the “mother!” and “The Fountain” director is nostalgic these days. Aronofsky recently told IndieWire that he hopes to re-release his black-and-white debut feature “Pi” in IMAX in early 2023.

“When I sold the film at Sundance in 1998, I fought really hard that the filmmakers would get the movie back,” he said. “They didn’t really want to do it and they were like, ‘Fine, we’ll give it back to you in 25 years.’ So that’s about to happen and we’ve been actually scanning the negative at 8k, and we are working on an ATMOS mix and polishing it up, and we’re planning to do an IMAX release on March 14, for the movie.”

Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter. In Scream VI, Melissa Barrera (“Sam Carpenter”), Jasmin Savoy Brown (“Mindy Meeks-Martin”), Mason Gooding (“Chad Meeks-Martin”), Jenna Ortega (“Tara Carpenter”), Hayden Panettiere (“Kirby Reed”), and Courtney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) return to their roles in the franchise alongside Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra and Samara Weaving.

We do know that Scream 6 will take place in New York City. So that evens the score with three films in Woodsboro and three taking place elsewhere. And, we do know two of those survivors must be Sam and Tara because, well, they are the new faces of this franchise. The other two are pretty easy to figure out as well. Randy Meeks’ niece and nephew Mindy and Chad are the only other people from the teen friend group to live, so it’s obviously them. For new cast, Dermot Mulroney will portray a cop while Samara Weaving and Spider-Man‘s Tony Revolori  have also joined the cast in undisclosed roles.

Recently, Melissa Barrera revealed when exactly Scream 6 would take place within the timeline of the Scream franchise. She noted during an interview with Deadline, which we saw on Collider, “It’s (Scream 6) like almost directly after the last one. Basically, the amount of time that has passed between one movie and the other is the amount of time that has passed in, you know, Scream time.”

Discovery+ announced today that it is beginning production on Won’t Be Silent, a new music documentary feature produced by singer, actress and activist Selena Gomez and author, entrepreneur and political leader Stacey Abrams, and directed by Kristi Jacobson (“Solitary,” “A Place at the Table”).

Won’t Be Silent will celebrate songs that have impacted the world on a variety of issues and the incredible female artists behind them. The film is a love letter to the women in music who have used their voices to change the course of history with their art and activism.

“The powerful women we will be highlighting are not only talented but have been on the frontline of pushing culture forward and holding a mirror up to political and social injustices,” said Gomez.

“Throughout history, women in music have used their art as activism by bringing attention to issues impacting our nation and world. “Won’t Be Silent is a celebration of the artists who have contributed to bettering the world through their timeless music,” said Abrams.

“Music is one of the most essential and inspiring elements of the human experience. In its most powerful form, music can be both an expression of struggle and the gateway to understanding. Won’t Be Silent will showcase the value of music through the lens of some of our greatest female artists and their powerful songs that inspire us in times of division and strife,” said Igal Svet, VP, Documentaries, discovery+. “We admire how passionately Selena uses her enormous platform to speak out on issues affecting her generation and Stacey’s tireless pursuit of change. Together with Kristi Jacobson’s intimate and thoughtful directorial eye, this film will shine light on these enlightening stories in a way that only Selena and Stacey can.”

Producing partners for Won’t Be Silent include Academy & Emmy® Award-winner Angus Wall and Kent Kubena of MakeMake Entertainment (“Icarus,” “13th,” “Jennifer Lopez: Halftime”), Aleen Keshishian and Zack Morgenroth of Lighthouse Management + Media (“Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry”), Gomez’s July Moon Productions, Abrams’ Sage Works Productions, Academy Award-winner David Seidler (“The King’s Speech”), Clara Hendon and creator Abe Gurko. For discovery+, the executive producer is Igal Svet.

The Won’t Be Silent announcement follows the release of Gomez’s critically acclaimed biographical documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me” from director Alek Keshishian (“Madonna: Truth or Dare”), on Apple TV+.

As a recording artist, Gomez has sold more than 210 million singles worldwide and amassed over 45 billion global streams of her music.
