Wildscreen has launched its first short film fund in partnership with On the Edge, to catalyse new and creative projects by emerging filmmakers to bring new perspectives and fresh approaches to the natural history filmmaking genre.

The fund will provide grants of up to £15,000 to 6 emerging filmmakers or teams, to produce new, innovative, out-of-the-box short films that resonate with GenZ audiences and spotlight Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species and zones. The fund also aims to elevate emerging storytellers from backgrounds currently underrepresented within natural world storytelling, and platform original storytelling from filmmakers and communities that are deeply connected to the natural world and EDGE zones.

Successful grantees will also benefit from a wrap-around support programme including training and mentoring from leading industry figures in the wildlife and environmental film community to guide them through the filmmaking process.

The final films will be showcased as part of a special screening event at the next Wildscreen Festival 2024, further helping to grow their industry networks and advance the filmmakers careers.

Dates for the Wildscreen Festival 2024 are also announced today as 14-18 October 2024. The world’s biggest wildlife film and TV Festival, hosted in Bristol, UK, will continue as a hybrid format to support industry accessibility and inclusion and allow people to attend the Wildscreen Festival from anywhere in the world.

Lucie Muir, Wildscreen CEO said: “We’re so excited to be partnering with On the Edge on this fund and to have the opportunity to move Wildscreen more into the film funding space. Through the Edge of Nature: Short Film Fund, we hope to grow and democratise the global ecosystem of natural world storytelling talent, by shaking up traditional entry points and by disrupting the stories being told and who they are being told by. We’re looking for experimental filmmakers and teams exploring new natural history styles; approaches that push boundaries and break the mould.

EDGE species and zones are little known with many of their stories untold. We can’t wait to see their stories brought to the mainstream for a GenZ audience whilst supporting unheard voices, new perspectives and narratives.”

Dr Alex Bowmer, Director of Natural History at On the Edge said: ‘This is an exciting opportunity to support emerging filmmakers in Natural History, those who want to tell new stories and change how nature is portrayed on our screens. Not only that, but for the first time, we are casting the spotlight on Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species and spaces, those who receive little to no attention. Think of them as nature’s underdogs, and this fund as the opportunity to tell their stories.

By partnering with Wildscreen, we will be able to reconnect audiences with nature through authentic and entertaining storytelling. Not only will the species and spaces captured be new to most, but also the means by which they are presented’.

About EDGE Species and Zones

EDGE species are Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered species in the plant, fungi and animal kingdoms. They collectively represent billions of years of evolutionary history. When they’re gone, there’s no replacing them.

EDGE Zones add up to less than 1% of earth’s land collectively but hold one-third of the planet’s terrestrial vertebrates. They are spread across five continents, from the humid forests of Madagascar to the mountainous Western Ghats region of India.

How to apply

Applications for the fund open today. The deadline for submissions is 5 October 2023. Shortlisted filmmakers will receive pitch training and then pitch to an industry panel led by Wildscreen and On the Edge, in late October, with the recipients announced November 2023.

The Cast Of "The Traitors: Canada"

Well, comedy nerds, the time has come to debate the merits of verisimilitude in standup comedy. Should standups only tell the truth about the mundanity of life, or are they permitted to, in Emerill’s parlance, kick it up a notch with some good, old-fashioned exaggeration? What if there are fabrications in the set-up? What about tags? Act outs? Are those also subject to fact-checking? Of course, the only answer to this question is a question: “Is the joke funny?” Nevertheless, the discourse is hungry and it shall feed.

On The View, Whoopi Goldberg came out in favor of exaggeration, responding to criticisms against Hasan Minhaj, who recently admitted to fabricating material, by reminding her audience “That’s our job.”

“That’s what we do, tell stories, and we embellish them,” she told her audience. Looking a little confused by the whole argument, Goldberg didn’t wade into the specifics of the claims made in The New Yorker’s profile of Minhaj, but she did recall the time a reporter asked about her degree from NYU, which she doesn’t have. Goldberg remembered that one of her characters, Fontaine, had the degree, and the reporter had mistook her joke for truth.

“If you’re going to hold a comic to the point where you’re going to check up on stories, you have to understand, a lot of it is not the exact thing that happened because why would we tell exactly what happened? It ain’t that interesting,” she continued. “There’s information that we will give you as comics that will have grains of truth but don’t take it to the bank. That’s our job, a seed of truth. Sometimes truth and sometimes total BS.”

Comedian Hasan Minhaj Responds After Being Accused Of Fabricating Stories | The View

Over the weekend, Minhaj admitted to the New Yorker that he exaggerated events for comedy, including a joke about worrying his daughter ingested anthrax. She’s fine, but he did receive white powder in the mail and worried it was anthrax. In another instance, he joked about his prom date rejecting him the night of the dance because of his race. However, the woman said she broke up with him days before their date and denied that she did so because of he is Muslim (Minhaj disagrees with her version of events). Furthermore, she accused the comedian of failing to protect her identity in the joke, effectively doxing her, leading to years of online harassment. Elsewhere in the piece, The New Yorker reports that three women accused his show, Patriot Act, of “gender discrimination, sex-based harassment, and retaliation,” which seems lost in the conversations surrounding exaggerating real-life events for comedy.

Minhaj, who was a frontrunner for The Daily Show until this recent controversy took over headlines, says he is within his rights to invent jokes, premises, and situations for comedy. “All my standup stories are based on events that happened to me. Yes, I was rejected from going to prom because of my race. Yes, a letter with powder was sent to my apartment that almost harmed my daughter. Yes, I had an interaction with law enforcement during the war on terror,” he said in a statement to Variety. “I use the tools of standup comedy—hyperbole, changing names and locations, and compressing timelines to tell entertaining stories. That’s inherent to the art form.”

The Union Solidarity Coalition — founded over the summer by a group of writer-directors moved to support crewmembers amid the strike — launched an eBay auction last week with lots so unique, it seems they were dreamed up in a writers room. And the bids have been rolling in fast and thick.

A sampling of the offerings and current bids (as of publication time) include dinner with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross ($10,200); the cast of Bob’s Burgers singing a custom song ($7,200); Natasha Lyonne helping solve the New York Times Sunday crossword via Zoom ($6,100); Lena Dunham painting a mural in your home ($5,100); John Lithgow painting a watercolor portrait of your dog ($4,450); a pottery class with Busy Philipps in New York ($3,500); Adam Scott walking your dog in L.A. for one hour ($2,500); a Zoom with Barry Jenkins and Nicholas Britell ($1,250); and a relationship advice squabble over Zoom with Rosemarie Dewitt and Ron Livingston ($1,136).

The above lots served to introduce the initiative, and due to popular demand and the creative offerings of other celebrity volunteers, TUSC updated the eBay site Friday with another batch. The latest round features a Zoom with Nicole Kidman and Lulu Wang; an “exquisite corpse drawing Zoom” with Charlie Day and Mary Elizabeth Ellis ($2,025); an L.A. gay bar hop with Triangle of Sadness star Dolly De Leon ($610); a personal David Krumholtz serenade via Zoom ($510); and a one-hour Mortal Kombat gaming session with Kumail Nanjiani while his wife and creative partner Emily V. Gordon adds commentary ($1,025). “The crew works harder than any actor on set so we want to support them during this time when they are unable to work. Also, we love playing video games,” offers Nanjiani.

“People started coming out of the woodwork and being really creative because it’s a strike,” explained writer-producer Liz Benjamin, one of TUSC’s founding members, during a Zoom interview alongside cohorts Amy Seimetz and Susanna Fogel. “People didn’t want to promote a movie or a project they’ve been in, they wanted to do something different, so it forced people to think outside the box.” Once they did, the offers started rolling in. “It kind of just snowballed, like everything in Hollywood does once you get the train moving,” Seimetz adds. “Everyone wants to get involved.”

The auction is the latest push by TUSC to raise funds and support crew during Hollywood’s dual strike by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. The organization previously hosted Solidarity Night! in Los Angeles on July 15. That event, along with other efforts, raised an initial $315,000, and the next batch of funds from the auction will go to the same cause — helping crewmembers, via the TUSC Motion Picture & Television Fund, who have lost or are at risk of losing health care by covering premiums to ensure access to high-quality health care. (TUSC is also partnered with Entertainment Health Insurance Solutions.)

As the story goes, the idea for an organization started as a brainstorm in a WGA-DGA WhatsApp thread. The full list of founding TUSC members includes Benjamin, Fogel, Seimetz, Dunham, Rachel Lee Goldenberg, Tara Miele, Alex Winter, Frankie Shaw, Josh Locy, Justine Bateman, Antonio Campos, Malik Vitthal, Paul Scheer, Zoe Lister-Jones, Andrea Savage, Tony Phelan, Julie Plec, Crystal Moselle and Sarah Adina Smith. Many of those chipped in to contact friends, peers and onetime collaborators to see if and what they could contribute to the auction.

“TUSC as an organization has two missions,” says Fogel, a writer-director-producer. “The first is fundraising to directly help crew who are suffering; the second is community-building events that can help give us that family feeling we experience on set when we’re working together. This auction is an encapsulation of both: It’s a way to raise money, but it’s also a way to demonstrate that we take care of each other. Our plan is to continue this type of outreach and fundraising not just through the end of the strikes but beyond. Crew unions have their own negotiations coming up, and the more we can stand together the better, as we collectively fight for fair contracts — whatever that means to our individual unions.”

The auction — now live through Friday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. PT — snagged so much attention out of the gate that countless social media users borrowed the unique items as inspiration to create faux lots. On X (formerly Twitter), a user teased “varnish a cabinet with David Lynch for $10,000,” and it even caught Lyonne’s eye as she replied, “Were it real, I’d bid on it all day.” Other posts offered Toni Collette screaming at you from across a dinner table for $10,000; a “degradation session” with Succession star J. Smith-Cameron; Jesse Williams saving you from a home invasion for $620; a five-hour ASMR session with Patrick Stewart impersonating Borat for $6,350; and Steve Zahn helping you remember what you’ve seen him in without getting impatient for $9,128,083, to name a few.

TUSC’s auction is part of a larger trend of creative fundraising amid Hollywood’s dual strike. Insiders mounted a WGA Garage Sale that benefited the Entertainment Community Fund and featured items like a crystal consultation with Spencer Pratt, a custom speech penned by WGA negotiating committee co-chair Chris Keyser, and getting “pooped on” by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog via custom video. Pay Up Hollywood is selling lawn signs to support WGA and SAG members. More recently, Better Things creator Pamela Adlon took to Instagram to show off the contents of a storage locker, which she plans to sell via custom website to benefit ECF.

Coming up next month, a team of collaborators that includes Marta Kauffman, Paul McCrane and Paul Scheer are mounting a live telethon-style fundraiser at L.A.’s Orpheum Theater titled “The Give Back-ular Spectacular.” That event is set to take place Oct. 25 as a benefit designed “to raise awareness that this strike is adversely affecting not just writers and actors, but the entire community of artists, craftspeople, technicians, production assistants and support staff.” It will raise funds to cover COBRA and health care premiums for members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), Teamsters, Laborers’ International Union of North America and other workers who are being financially impacted by the work stoppage.

The TUSC insiders say it’s not a surprise to see how their peers have responded. “We’re a bunch of self-starters who love working in film and TV, which is all about collaboration and being creative. We [keep asking ourselves], “OK, how can we expand this and keep going and keep going?” Seimetz explained. “We keep growing because we have so many people who are willing to jump in, like with this auction Liz jumped in and said she knew how to do it and then people just take the lead and others help out. It’s a really inspiring thing to be a part of during this time when it feels divided.”

Benjamin said Seimetz “hit the nail on the head” with that statement. “[TUSC] is a leaderless organization. I’ve never experienced anything like it. It’s a group made up of people who are all willing to jump in and say, ‘Yes, how can I help?’ It’s delivering a lot of positivity to a very scary time for people during an interminable strike. We’re all about lifting each other up.”

As for their response to seeing their auction lifted up online and in dozens of news reports, Fogel says it’s been both shocking and thrilling. “We did not anticipate this. This is wild and so fun. You can never predict what will go viral or catch fire online, but seeing the memes that have been generated is endlessly entertaining and so encouraging. It’s also so insane and wild. Hopefully, that translates into money raised, but it’s also just kind of giving us a nice boost of adrenaline.”

The Union Solidarity Coalition — founded over

One of the great things about Documentary Now! is its specificity. Viewers know that when Documentary Now! parodies Werner Herzog or Agnes Varda, creators Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and writer John Mulaney won’t miss. Unsurprisingly, that commitment to hyper-specific references extends to text messages between Hader, Mulaney, and Armisen.

Last week, Bill Hader appeared on hour 17 of The Best Show’s 24-hour live stream, wherein—god love him—host Tom Scharpling spent an entire day fielding calls on The Best Show. During their delightfully loopy, sleep-deprived chat, Scharpling steered the conversation toward the Van Halen brothers at the behest of Best Show regular and Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster. Turns out, not only does Hader do a great Eddie and Alex Van Halen complaining about former singer David Lee Roth at the 1996 MTV VMAs, but also he revealed that he had a text chain with Fred Armisen and John Mulaney where they roleplay as the Van Halen brothers getting into a fender bender.

Bill Hader does his Van Halen impression

“John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, and I had a text chain as the Van Halen brothers rear-ending somebody,” he tells Scharpling. “They had a press conference about the rear-ending, and nobody cared about it, but they assumed it was going to be a thing. They would be up at the [podium], and no one was asking questions, but Eddie Van Halen was going, ‘One at a time! One at a time!’”

Apparently, Hader has a whole Van Halen chunk that the world is just learning about. Elsewhere in the interview, the Barry star talks about calling Wurster and Fucked Up singer Damien Abraham in character as the Van Halen brothers. As with his Documentary Now! work, this is an impression based on a very specific interview that was, at one point, a fixture of VH-1 rock ’n’ roll feud shows but is now lost to the sands of time. We did uncover part of it, though, including the part where Eddie says, “His work ethic sucked.” However, the search for Hader’s favorite part, Eddie and Alex repeatedly saying, “He was very disrespectful to Beck,” continues.

WeCreateTv with Van Halen

Thankfully for Scharpling, The Best Show’s 24-hour stream ended on September 13, but the team over there is breaking the whole thing up into bite-size morsels. Scharpling interviews Nathan Fielder, Samantha Bee, Tony Shalhoub, Bob Odenkirk, Marc Maron, Sarah Squirm, Tim Heidecker, and more. He even got a call from CSNY’s Graham Nash (as played by Matt Berry).

Full interviews can be found on The Best Show’s podcast feed, with video of the stream available on Patreon.

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! A drive out to the boonies to a secluded motel for a tryst with a girl who promises a guy her virginity is too good to be true in director Jeon Woo-sung’s Bargain. But co-writers Woo-Sung, Choi Byung-Yoon, and Kwak Jae-Min give viewers much more than they bargained for by entering the world of ruthless human organ auctions. The bait is hot young girls that men connect with on an online dating app with the promise of sex for $ 1,000.

The film starts with a very intriguing, funny, and sexy cat-and-mouse Hitchcockian conversation between the client, No Hyung-Soo (Jin Sun-Kyu), and the girl, Park Joo-Young (Jun Jong-Seo). It’s verbal foreplay. But things take a more serious turn when the client realizes that his girl for hire might not be a virgin, so he wants to pay her $170 instead. She all too easily accepts the lower fee but tells him he must shower before they get busy. It is clear Park Joo-Young’s got other plans for him.

“…as the second pair of kidneys are to be sold, a devastating earthquake collapses the entire motel…”

The tables turn sinister in a short time as the bait places the lure in a vulnerable position for the henchmen to grab Hyung-Soo. Soon enough, he’s prepped to have his entire body go onto auction for over a dozen very eager scumbag clients who desperately need an AB-positive host. Park Joo-Young, who is one of many girls who work there in the same capacity, now becomes the auctioneer of her client’s body. A hilarious auction commences. Just as the second pair of kidneys are to be sold, a devastating earthquake collapses the entire motel, complete madness and mayhem ensue, and the survival of the fittest begins.

Bargain is a mousetrap of running away from insane, basement-dwelling brothers, evil pimp gangsters, and a surviving auction client, who doesn’t know how to read the room, and still wants the kidney he paid for. The six episodes climax into a tense, gory, claustrophobic, and hilarious adventure. The set design is excellent. A considerable gap opens up in the middle of the motel, opening up several stories down into a watery abyss where the aforementioned psychotic brothers live. Their dwelling would make Leatherface envious. The crumbling inn is also quite uncomfortable and believably dilapidated by the quake.

South Korean horror films continue to reach outside the box by telling fresh stories about the horror humans put each other through. Bargain knows that how people react to natural disasters and prove their humanity by helping others makes for solid drama. The girls of this motel are victims who become sociopaths through no fault of their own, and the viewer will sympathize with them and their will to survive. Another season could reveal more of the shady world of these criminal enterprises because the ending is open to a variety of interpretations. I would welcome another stay with these crazy people under such dire circumstances.

Bargain screened at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! A drive

Soap opera star Billy Miller’s mother is speaking out in the wake of her son’s death at 43 years old.

In a statement to Soap Opera Digest on Monday, Patricia Miller said the Daytime Emmy-winning star died after “a long hard valiant battle with bipolar depression.”

Miller — who is best known for roles on General Hospital and The Young and the Restless — died on Friday ET confirmed on Sunday — which would have marked his 44th birthday.

Miller’s family said that Miller died in Austin, Texas, and that “The actor was struggling with manic depression when he died.”

“I would like to share the following thoughts,” Patricia began her statement Monday. “I want to personally thank the many fans & personal friends for the overwhelming amount of love, prayers & condolences sent to me and my family on the devastating death of my beautiful son BJ — Billy Miller. He fought a long hard valiant battle with bipolar depression for years. He did everything he could to control the disease. He loved his family, his friends and his fans but in the end the disease won the fight and he surrendered his life. The other causes of death being told are not true. I wish they were but they just aren’t. We all loved him so much and are desperately trying to deal with our loss. I will have nothing further to say. Thanks for the love and support.”

Miller’s career began as a model, signed to Wilhelmina. In 2007 he had a role as Richie Novak on All My Children, where he stayed until 2008. From 2008-2014, Miller starred as Billy Abbott on The Young and the Restless. A role that got him three Daytime Emmy awards. After exiting The Young and the Restless in 2014, Miller went on to play Jason Morgan and Drew Cain on General Hospital until 2019.

After leaving soaps, Miller appeared in five episodes of the USA drama Suits, where he played the brother of Harvey Spector, Marcus.

Following the news of Miller’s death, his co-stars in the daytime television community took to social media to mourn the loss.

General Hospital‘s executive producer, Frank Valentini, took to X (formally known as Twitter) to mourn.

“I am devastated to hear news of the incredibly talented Billy Miller’s passing. On behalf of the entire @GeneralHospital family, our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” he wrote.

Instacart on Monday priced its shares at $30 each for its initial public offering, at the top of its expected range, in a sign of renewed demand for tech stocks.

The San Francisco-based grocery delivery company had estimated that its shares would be priced at $28 to $30 a share. Instacart raised $660 million in the offering and was valued at $9.9 billion, significantly below its last private fund-raising round in 2021, which valued the company at $39 billion.

The shares will begin trading on Tuesday on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol CART.

Instacart’s offering showcases one of the largest gaps between a company’s private and public market valuations, serving as a reality check for other highly valued, closely held start-ups. Many companies that raised money during the boom times of 2020 and 2021 have slashed their soaring valuations over the last year.

But the fact that Instacart pulled off an I.P.O. at all could give hope to other companies seeking to tap the public markets. Before last week, this had been the worst year for I.P.O.s since 2009, according to EquityZen, a marketplace for private stocks.

Instacart’s pricing follows last week’s successful debut for the chip designer Arm. Arm’s stock was priced at the top of its proposed range and rose 25 percent on its first day of trading.

After Arm’s I.P.O., Instacart raised its proposed price range.

Instacart’s path to the public market, alongside that of Klaviyo, a marketing tech company that will also list its shares this week, has been closely watched from Silicon Valley to Wall Street. A positive reception could persuade more companies to tap the public markets to raise money.

Founded in 2012, Instacart was one of many “gig economy” start-ups that use networks of contract workers to deliver on-demand services like takeout, housecleaning and rides at the tap of a button on an app. Many such companies went out of business or were sold, while the largest players — Lyft, DoorDash and Uber — have struggled to turn a profit.

Instacart managed to do so by expanding into more profitable businesses like advertising and software tools under Fidji Simo, a former Meta executive who took over as the start-up’s chief executive in 2021. The company brought in $2.5 billion in revenue last year, up 39 percent from a year earlier, with $428 million in net profit.

Still, it has endured turbulence. After a surge in orders from people stuck at home during the first year of pandemic lockdowns, Instacart’s growth slowed drastically in 2021. Last year, its grocery orders grew 18 percent from 2021, and orders in the first half of this year were flat compared with a year earlier.

Instacart tried projecting confidence about its public offering by securing a $175 million investment in its I.P.O. shares from PepsiCo before its listing. Sequoia Capital, which owns a 19 percent stake in Instacart, and D1 Capital, which owns 14 percent, were also among a group of firms that said they were interested in buying $400 million of Instacart’s I.P.O. shares.

It was enough to lure Wall Street investors back to the table after several years of rocky performances from young tech companies.

Apoorva Mehta, the Instacart co-founder who stepped down as chief executive in 2021, owns an 11 percent stake. At $30 a share, his holdings are worth $869 million.

Meredith Kopit Levien, The New York Times’s chief executive, sits on Instacart’s board.

“I’m told the replay of Nick Chubb getting injured is not to be seen,” ’s Joe Buck said on the ABC broadcast tonight. In the background just after, you could hear the stadium crowd react to the footage being shown onscreen.

“Yeah, we’re not going to show it. It’s as bad as you can imagine,” replied analyst Troy Aikman.

Chubb, the Cleveland Browns’ star running back, was on a short run near the end zone when he was hit low by Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and went down at the 3 yard line. He immediately grabbed his left leg and took off his helmet. You can see the play below, without the gruesome close-up.

Chubb was quickly carted off the field, with Buck reporting cheers for him from the crowd as he left.

For longtime NFL fans, the injury recalled that of Joe Theismann in 1985. As he was tackled, Theismann’s leg was bent in a similarly unnatural way, causing compound fracture of the tibia and fibula. His hall-of-fame career was over.

While times – and sports medicine – have changed, the NFL later announced that Chubb’s season, at least, was over, citing what it termed “a significant knee injury.”

It’s the second potentially season-ending injury in as many weeks on MNF, which last Monday saw the New York Jets’ brand new superstar, Aaron Rodgers, go down four plays into the game.

Season 2 of Loki will feature Jonathan Majors in a big way, with Marvel Studios confirming his return to the action.

Jonathan Majors’ MCU debut came in Loki Season 1 when he played He Who Remains, a Variant of Kang the Conqueror. The actor then appeared in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania as the Conqueror himself.

However, on March 26, over a month after Quantumania premiered in theaters, Majors was arrested for assault.

Many fans instantly wondered how involved Majors would be in the MCU going forward, even theorizing that his character could be recast. Considering how he already filmed Season 2 of Loki, promotional material featured the actor, and it seemed he would remain as a cast member at least for the Disney+ show.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Loki Season 2 executive producer Kevin Wright talked about the extent of Jonathan Majors’ role in the upcoming Disney+ project.

Wright first talked about Majors’ character, Victor Timely (a Kang the Conqueror Variant), and talked about how “excited” he and the rest of Marvel Studios are that Timely will be portrayed in Loki:

“Victor Timely is somebody that we are very, very excited about. When you look at Kang, he has a very funny comic backstory. He has all these iterations.”

The executive producer then revealed that Majors’ character will “be a big part of the show,” obviously confirming that Majors himself will be featured in an extensive way despite his ongoing assault case and real-world controversy:

“Timely was one that we’ve always wanted to do in ‘Loki.’ And I think we’re really excited about how that integrates into the season. It’s a big part of the show.”

How Much Will Jonathan Majors Be in Loki?

A recent report detailed that Jonathan Majors will be featured in around three of the six episodes in Loki Season 2, so fans can expect to see him a decent amount in the upcoming show.

It is entirely possible and maybe even likely that Majors will not only portray Victor Timely in Season 2 but other Kang Variants as well – maybe even Kang the Conqueror again.

Since Kang is slated to be the major antagonist of the MCU for the foreseeable future, it would make sense for him (and/or his Variants) to be involved with Loki in a “big” way.

However, only time will tell just how much Marvel Studios will put the actor on-screen, but it will probably be a substantial amount.

Season 2 of Loki is set to premiere on Disney+ on Friday, October 6.

Recently, we learned that a newly discovered type of snake was named after Indiana Jones. Well, after the actor who portrayed him. Now, we’ve got that topped. Because that’s just one snake after all. Thanks to the folks at Gizmodo, we’ve learned that Brazilian scientists from the Emilio Goeldi Paraense Museum have found three new species of spiders, which they are naming after the “Big Three” of Enterprise bridge crews from Star Trek—Captain James T. Kirk, Mister Spock, and Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy. The spiders belong to the Roddenberry genus, which is of course named after Star Trek’s creator Gene Roddenberry.

Paramount, Alexander Sánchez-Ruiz & Alexandre B. Bonaldo

The scientists discovered these spiders across different locations in Latin America. They found R. kirk in Costa Rica, while they discovered R. spock in Campeche, Mexico, and R. mccoy in Big California Sur, also in Mexico. Co-authors Alexander Sánchez-Ruiz and Alexandre B. Bonaldo identified both a male and female specimen of the spider R. kirk. However, they only discovered a female R. spock and male R. mccoy. Unlike Indiana Jones, they named these spiders after the characters, not the actors. So no R. shatner or R. nimoy in this bunch, sadly.

McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) in Star Trek: The Original Series.

The original Star Trek series inspired researchers after noticing how the arachnid anatomy resembled that of various starships seen in the iconic franchise. We’re not really sure we see that ourselves at all. Maybe the Enterprise saucer section a bit? But we guess they kind of look like some Klingon ships we’ve seen in the series. We bet these scientists were just super big Star Trek fans, and wanted to immortalize their favorite characters for eternity. We can’t say we blame them. Hey, maybe they discover some new species as time goes on, and we got a few spiders with names like R. uhura, R. sulu, R. scotty, and R. chekov. Get the whole Enterprise bridge crew their own arachnid counterparts.

When Foamstars was revealed during May’s Playstation Showcase, the internet’s judgment was swift and brutal–it’s just a Splatoon rip-off. Case closed. But after playing four rounds of suds-fuelled multiplayer action at Gamescom 2023, the reality is a little bit more complicated.

Foamstars is a four-versus-four party shooter game pitched by Square Enix as “filling a gap” in the online multiplayer shooter market. In a sense, it is, if you are absolutely determined to ignore the gigantic ink-covered squid in the room. The basic gameplay sees two teams of four players fight across a map, spraying colored foam that sticks to surfaces and damages opposing players, with developers promising a suite of adversarial game modes.

Every player can surf across foam–fast if it’s your team’s color, and much slower if it’s the opposing team’s. If a player is coated with enough foam, they are immobilized in a giant foam ball. Surfing into an enemy in this state knocks them out, scoring a point for your team, and surfing into a foamed teammate breaks them free to fight again.

Players choose from a roster of characters with varied weapons and special moves, offering various playstyles from precise ranged combat to in-your-face anarchy. All four rounds we played featured a mode called Smash The Star, in which teams battle to knock out seven opposing players, after which that team’s star player becomes marked. Knocking out the other team’s star player wins the game.

With the game’s fundamentals out of the way, it’s absolutely impossible to believe that Foamstars isn’t a very targeted, legally distinct variation on Splatoon, and an attempt to translate Nintendo’s successful multiplayer franchise to a non-Nintendo audience. From its bubblegum color palette to its twee anime-adjacent character design, denying Splatoon’s heavy influence on Foamstars would require committing to a frankly astonishing level of cognitive dissonance. However, there are a few nuanced differences that do make Foamstars feel unique.

While the contrasting colored foam that coats the maps during each battle initially seems to be only a minor variation on Splatoon’s ink, the foam persists as a three dimensional asset on the map that can be built upon, changing the topography of the level as the match progresses. Across a three-minute round the map becomes a mountain range of technicolor bubbles, brought into relief by the chaotic battles playing out across the previously flat arena.

Though it was difficult to get to grips with in our short play time, it’s easy to see how an organized team could create defensive structures or platforms to rain down foamy destruction on their adversaries. Even outside of expert play, seeing the map transform in three dimensions as the action played out was undeniably entertaining, and will surely add a significant level of tactical nuance for those who seek it.

Meanwhile, each of Foamstars’ characters have bespoke weapons and special attacks, opening up distinct offensive and defensive possibilities when combined in a team of four. Characters’ specialties vary from shotgun-style close-quarters action to foam rocket launchers and even heavy machine gun-style hoses that seem designed to embrace the anarchic spectacle of seemingly never-ending sprays of colored bubbles. It appears there is nothing to stop you from loading up your team with four identical characters, but a clever combination of roles and specialties seems fundamental to success on the battlefield.

Playing as four different characters across the four rounds, I was pleasantly surprised by how distinct each character felt, with movement speed, weapon selection, and special moves making for an interesting variety in gameplay style. Special attacks such as a foam grenade or a spiraling cartwheel complement the personality and playstyle of each character, who also have a spectacular hero shooter-style ultimate move that invariably results in a vast area of the map being covered in foam.

Are 3D morphing maps and hero shooter elements enough to entirely differentiate Foamstars from Splatoon? Maybe not. But having played a few rounds of Foamstars, the foamy chaos on display was undeniably endearing, and it’ll be interesting to see how an audience responds to the tweaks Foamstars has made, however minor, to the tried and true Splatoon formula for different platforms.

Throughout an entire junket day as well as a special screening tonight at the TCL Grauman Chinese Theatre, The Creator filmmaker Gareth Edwards showed his solidarity for the pic’s cast as the SAG-AFTRA strike continued into its 67th day.

Earlier today in a series of press video interviews at the London Hotel, Edwards donned rotating black T-shirts with the name of actors in his cast; a visual spirited shoutout to the actors that starred in the $80M New Regency/20th Century Studios/Disney sci-fi movie. The pic’s cast includes John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Allison Janney, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Ken Watanabe, among several others.

All of this culminated in Edwards having the Chinese Theatre audience tonight record a special message to the striking cast.

20th Century Studios

Recording the video on his phone, Edwards told his cast “Hi everyone, really miss you, wish you could all be here, but I made some new friends and they all want to send you a message of love and support,” at which point the entire theatre gave a huge cheer. You can watch the video below.

Edwards was very prescient when it came to making The Creator in that the pic deals with a war between humans and A.I. robots. And you know if there’s one thing on the minds of many in town, from studio execs to WGA and SAG-AFTRA members, it’s the impact of A.I. Washington’s spy mercenary in the film has a relationship with a woman, Maya, (Chan) who is the architect behind the A.I. robots ruling the globe — in particular a robotic child who is to be the lynchpin in the robots’ war on humans. During the pic, Washington’s character Joshua, is protecting the child and searching for Maya. Edwards co-wrote the movie with his Rogue One: A Star Wars Story scribe, Chris Weitz.

Added Edwards tonight about his latest movie, “No one is really creating original sci-fi blockbusters anymore, it’s an endangered species.”

At a recent trailer drop, Edwards said that when he pitched the film, executives wanted to know the backstory as to why there was a war between humans and A.I.; if artificial intelligence was a good idea. “The setup of that movie is pretty much the last few months,” Edwards said at the time.

“A.I. was the fairy tale of this story. A.I. was like the other — the people that were different to us, that we kind of want to get rid of,” he explained back on Aug. 29. “But the second you make an A.I., all kinds of fascinating things start to happen.”

The Creator hits theaters on Sept. 29 and can also be seen then in Imax and PLF screens.

ABC will air ten more Monday Night Football games due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes stripping the fall schedule.

Although the WGA confirmed today that they would be restarting talks with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers), networks are still scrambling to fill their fall schedule. For ABC, this means a lot more Monday Night Football.

Per The Associated Press, ABC will air an additional ten Monday Night Football games that were originally set to appear only on ESPN. Most networks will be struggling this fall with fewer scripted originals due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but live sports still bring in viewers, so networks will be leaning on those pretty hard. This means that ABC will have a game all 18 weeks of the regular football season, as well as simulcasts of two playoff games.

Variety added that audiences who tune in to Monday Night Football on ESPN will see a new music video featuring Chris Stapleton, Snoop Dogg, and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana performing Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight. The long-time Heavy Action theme will still remain a part of the show.

The WGA officially went on strike on May 2nd, with SAG-AFTRA following suit on July 14th. There have been several failed attempts at reaching a new agreement with the studios, but little progress has been made. The news that talks will resume is promising, so hopefully this is the first stage towards WGA and SAG-AFTRA members receiving a fair deal.

“The WGA and AMPTP now have a confirmed schedule to bargain this week, starting on Wednesday,” reads the WGA statement. “You might not hear from us in the coming days while we are negotiating, but know that our focus is getting a fair deal for writers as soon as possible. We’ll reach out again when there is something of significance to report. In the meantime, please continue to demonstrate your commitment and unity by coming out to the picket lines – for yourselves and fellow writers, SAG-AFTRA, other unions’ members, and all those in our community who are impacted by the strikes.“

Love is Blind alums Jackie Bonds and Josh Demas are calling it quits after over a year of dating.

The reality TV couple, who fans will remember for their highly publicized love triangle during season 4 of the Netflix series, announced their break up on Monday.

Jackie revealed during a recent livestream — which was shared in a TikTok video by @realityashley — that she ended things with Josh after speaking with his ex-girlfriend, Monica Rodriguez, but did not elaborate on exactly what was said.

“I’m still sick about it. I love that man,” Jackie said during the livestream. “I was like, ‘Damn, I had all these life plans with you and then you just don’t even care.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s crazy.'”

Jackie continued, “I tried doing everything I could and what’s crazy is looking back on these messages I look like a begging a** b**** and I never beg no one to be with me.”

For his part, Josh took to Instagram on Monday saying that his and Jackie’s breakup was mutual. “After a lot of thinking, Jackie and I both agreed that it’s best that we end the relationship.”

Josh Demas Instagram

Jackie and Josh’s relationship initially began in 2022 while filming in the “pods” on season 4 of Love is Blind. However, Jackie ended up choosing her connection with Marshall Glaze over that with Josh and went to get engaged to Marshall.

However, throughout the season Jackie and Marshall’s relationship began to deteriorate and the two ended their engagement while filming in Seattle.

Josh and Jackie reunited during the series and went on a successful date.

After the show aired in March 2023, the couple was still going strong and had even moved in together.

Gavin Newsom said in an interview today that he has been “deeply involved with talking” to both sides of the long-running Writers Guild strike and “we’re going to be meeting again later this week.”

In an exclusive sit-down with Dana Bash, clips of which aired on CNN, the California governor responded to her question by saying he hasn’t been out on the picket line — as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul briefly was last month — but said he’s in “a different position.”

When she asked why, he continued: “[I’m] trying to be constructive on both sides, to utilize the formal authority I have as governor, the convening capacity I have as governor, the moral authority I can bring into the conversation to try to get everybody to the table.

Newsom added: “I’m encouraged by the conversations over this last weekend. I’m not going to overstate that, and I’m encouraged that they’re meeting again later this week.”

Bash then noted that Newsom supports the United Auto Workers in its strike against the Big 3 U.S. automakers “but you don’t want to go that far when it comes to” WGA and SAG-AFTRA.

“That’s the same question,” he replied. “I absolutely support what their concerns are. I support WGA and SAG as it relates to their existential stress as it related to streaming and how it’s radically changing the business model, as it relates to artificial intelligence. One thing I know about artificial intelligence is that we don’t know what we don’t know. And that anxiety stacked upon all the stress and anxiety that we’ve all been feeling around income and wealth disparities and all the challenges post-pandemic that we’ve gone through makes the perfect stew of stress that’s leading to a lot of anxiety that we’re experiencing all across the country.”

He added: “You’re seeing it more broadly as labor’s exercising more muscle out of more fear and stress about the world we’re living in. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I think, fundamentally, that’s a good thing. I believe in collective bargaining. I believe working families and the working poor do better when they organize together. … There’s not a state in our nation that does more to support that framework and those bargaining units.”

When Bash said experts estimate that the writer and actor strikes already have cost the state $5 billion — and Newsom interrupted, saying, “Probably more.”

You can watch CNN’s full Newsom interview above; the WGA strike discussion starts at the 6:45 mark.

Gavin Newsom said in an interview today

Tim Ballard, whose purported rescues of sex-trafficking victims were fictionalized in the hit summer movie Sound of Freedom, earlier this year left the advocacy group he founded after an internal investigation of sexual misconduct claims, sources familiar with the organization have confirmed. Ballard did not return a request for comment on the allegations.

According to Vice News, which corroborated reporting from Utah journalist Lynn Packer, Ballard stepped down as CEO of the anti-trafficking nonprofit Operation Underground Railroad amid complaints from seven women who said he made inappropriate advances in the course of missions abroad. His accusers — who have remained anonymous for fear of retaliation — alleged that Ballard would have different women pose as his wife during these trips, a pretext he used to suggest sharing a bed or showering together to maintain cover. The complaints detailed incidents in which Ballard allegedly sent a photo of himself in his underwear to one female OUR employee, and asked another how far she was willing to go to save children. As yet, none of Ballard’s accusers have spoken to the media.

The nature of the complaints first emerged in an anonymous letter sent to OUR staff and donors this summer about the circumstances of Ballard’s quiet departure. (OUR has since dodged questions around why Ballard resigned right before the release of the hagiographic Sound of Freedom.) The letter claimed that a sexual harassment complaint against Ballard from an OUR employee who accompanied him on an undercover operation led to an “extensive internal investigation” into Ballard’s “operational tactics,” which led to more women coming forward against him.

“It was ultimately revealed through disturbingly specific and parallel accounts,” the letter continued, “that Tim has been deceitfully and extensively grooming and manipulating multiple women for the past few years with the ultimate intent of coercing them to participate in sexual acts with him, under the premise of going where it takes and doing ‘whatever it takes’ to save a child.”

“Tim Ballard resigned from OUR on June 22, 2023,” the organization said in a statement shared with Rolling Stone. “OUR is dedicated to combatting sexual abuse, and does not tolerate sexual harassment or discrimination by anyone in its organization.” The group further noted that it had “retained an independent law firm to conduct a comprehensive investigation of all relevant allegations,” and “continues to assess and improve the governance of the organization and protocols for its operations.” Citing the need to “preserve the integrity of its investigation and to protect the privacy of all persons involved,” OUR declined to offer additional comment.

Ballard, who also vacated his position as CEO of the Glenn Beck-backed anti-trafficking group Nazerne Fund this summer, remains senior advisor to the SPEAR Fund, a new organization with a similar mission. SPEAR did not return a request for comment as to whether the sexual misconduct allegations would affect his role there.

Meanwhile, Ballard recently faced a rare and unexpected condemnation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for purportedly misrepresenting a powerful church elder’s involvement OUR’s work and his personal business dealings. In a fiery statement, a church spokesperson also alluded to Ballard’s “morally unacceptable” activities without specifying what they were. Ballard, who is Mormon, bizarrely denied that the church had issued the statement while speaking to supporters in Boston. “I don’t believe the church did this,” he protested while claiming that media coverage about him is untrue. “This is breaking down my family like you can’t believe.” Ballard’s efforts to control or downplay negative headlines come as he is reportedly considering a run for Senate. He would be campaigning to replace Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, who has said he would not seek reelection in 2024.

For years, both Ballard and OUR have distorted and exaggerated their work on behalf of trafficking victims, with other anti-trafficking groups routinely criticizing their methods. But a self-promotional style and descriptions of daring raids made Ballard and his organization darlings of the political right, including Donald Trump.

The religiously themed Sound of Freedom, distributed by Angel Studios (like OUR, it’s based in Utah and has significant ties to the Church of LDS) only cemented Ballard’s mythic heroism on that side of America’s partisan divide, and offered solidarity with the extreme conspiracist fringe: QAnon promoter Jim Caviezel, who starred as Ballard, used the press tour for the film to peddle outrageous false claims of elites abducting children to harvest for the chemical compound adrenochrome.

It remains to be seen whether fans of the movie, many of whom believe it accurately depicts Ballard’s exploits in bringing down pedophile trafficking rings, will change their opinion of its real-life subject based on the scandals that have dogged him since its release. Any chance for a sequel, however, has certainly diminished.

It should come as no surprise the migrant crisis is a global crisis. It just seems worse in our own backyard. This idea is examined in Sam Abbas’ documentary, Obstaculum.

Obstaculum takes us to the right-leaning commune of Joinville-le-Pont, located just a few miles from the center of Paris. It’s the beginning of winter, and the cold breezes are unbearable. The city has just instituted changes to the French Squatters Eviction Procedures giving owners and the police more power to evict squatters.

In Obstaculum, director Sam Abbas is in the middle of the action as a group of African migrant families from Ivory Coast, Gambia, Senegal, Sudan, Chad, Eritrea, and Ethiopia attempt to occupy a state-owned building in Paris. We first see the group break down the door of a museum. Once inside, they settle in, alarms blazing, amongst the artwork. Soon, the neighbors report the break-in and call the police.

“…in the middle of the action as a group of African migrant families…attempt to occupy a state-owned building in Paris.”

Running at seven minutes, Obstaculum is as simple a documentary as you can get. This style in the past is a sort of fictionalized cinéma verité. His cameras hang back and record the actions of the actors. Alia’s Birth is a great example of this.

In Obstaculum, this is not fiction. Abbas is embedded with the migrants as they break the Paris art museum. Abbass is not in the middle of the action, but he is off to the side, and much of the action is captured at a distance. He adds a bit of classic silent film-ish title sequences to give us the context and minimal play-by-play as it happens.

Though I found the events on screen interesting and somewhat dangerous, in the end, I wanted more action, and I wanted to be in the middle of it too. That said, I understand the practicality of a shoot like this, and my desires may not have been possible.

No matter where you stand on the issues of immigration and refugees, Obstaculum brings to light the stories we don’t see surrounding the issue and the stories we need to make a better-informed position either way.

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult.

What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you’ll probably need some for this game too.

I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #603 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It’s played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year.

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode – which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! – and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements – specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it’s difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle’s Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t blindly throw letters at it and expect to win – you’ll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That’s the case in Wordle too, of course, but it’s even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won’t want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe – but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you’re faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options – for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you’ll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It’s risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it’s the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure – you simply don’t have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” will never be used as evocatively as it was in Miami Vice’s 1984 pilot — Fire up the Spyder, Crockett, and load that shotgun, Tubbs! — but isn’t afraid to try. ESPN’s football franchise teamed up Snoop Dogg, Chris Stapleton, and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana to remake Collins’ 1981 hit as a brand-new opening theme.

And while it doesn’t touch Michael Mann’s indelible usage, the new rendition sure is moody fun. The minute-and-a-half recreation sees Stapleton, with an upturned collar and cowboy hat, walking determinedly down a stadium, while Snoop, in a tracksuit, drives in on a lowrider for a rap verse: “Rivals, us first then survival. We must win, it’s tribal.”

The video splices clips of the several NFL teams of Snoop Dogg’s rap, a crew of dancers, and Blackman Santana’s drum-playing. The video ends with a Stapleton guitar solo as he hits the track’s high notes in the chorus: “Well I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord.”

The full version of the opening — produced in part by Stapleton’s longtime producer, Dave Cobb — premiered at gametime tonight as New Orleans takes on Carolina. Stapleton hit high notes backed by Blackman Santana’s drumming.

Country stars and football openings seem to go hand-in-hand. Last Monday, Stapleton’s new single “White Horse” played before Monday Night Football. And two Sundays ago, Carrie Underwood returned for her 11th consecutive season of opening NBC’s Sunday Night Football with her “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” a melody remake of Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”

In February, Stapleton performed the national anthem ahead of Super Bowl LVII and went on to release his rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” to streaming services in June. He’ll drop his new album, Higher, on November 10.

Snoop Dogg, meanwhile, has been an outspoken supporter of striking Hollywood writers and actors. In July, the rapper canceled a pair of planned concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in October in a show of solidarity with the WGA and SAG/AFTRA.

Elusive DJ Zack Bia has finally addressed speculation that he inspired Olivia Rodrigo’s heartbreak track “Vampire.”

“I don’t think it’s really about me,” Bia told GQ in an interview published Monday, months after the “Guts” artist’s single dropped in June.

“I think the internet just ran with it,” he added.

When Rodrigo dropped “Vampire,” fans and internet sleuths tried to figure out who had inspired the scathing lyrics. “I’ve made some real big mistakes but you made the worst one look fine / I should’ve known it was strange you only come out at night,” she sings.

A number of TikTok skeptics linked Rodrigo’s lyrics (“blood sucker, fame f—”) to Bia’s high-profile dating history. The Los Angeles-raised DJ and Drake collaborator, 27, has been romantically linked to singer Madison Beer and “Glass Onion: Knives Out” star Madelyn Cline.

“You can’t tell me this isn’t about Zack Bia,” TikTok user @life.with.vicc said.

“Cancelled” podcast hosts Tana Mongeau and Brooke Schofield also weighed in on the topic in July. Schofield broke down the music video, calling Bia “the most important guy to know in Hollywood.”

Bia, who was seen with Rodrigo last year in New York, told GQ that he knows “how a song gets made” and that their split was not worthy of a song. He added that the short-lived relationship fizzled out.

“We hung out, we’re both busy, and we ended up not furthering our relationship,” he said. “There was never any drama, you know?”

Rodrigo told the Guardian she does not want to reveal who any of her songs are about. Whether “Vampire” is about him or not, Bia said the song is “so big and so awesome.”

He added: “I think Olivia is a generational songwriter. I think she’s a generational talent. I’m always just proud of her continued accomplishments.”

Rodrigo will be taking her sophomore album, “Guts,” across the United States and Europe with her world tour starting next year. She will perform four shows at Inglewood’s Kia Forum on Aug. 13, 14, 16 and 17.

Elusive DJ Zack Bia has finally

A LEGO Marvel special will be released soon on Disney+ that will focus on the Avengers.

LEGO and Marvel have collaborated many times when it comes to toys and merchandise.

Anytime a new project is released, whether it be within the MCU or in another corner of the Marvel universe, LEGO usually crafts different buildable sets for fans to collect and bring to life.

The company released a Spider-Man: No Way Home set featuring the final battle at the Statue of Liberty, and also even came out with a Morbius set after the film was released in theaters.

However, sometimes LEGO partners with certain companies to create animated LEGO specials. Multiple projects within this realm are available in the Star Wars realm on Disney+, such as The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.

LEGO’s New Avengers Disney+ Special

Disney+ recently announced via X (formerly known as Twitter) that a new LEGO special is on its way to the streaming platform.

The title of the special will be LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red, and it’s currently set for release on Friday, October 27.

Disney+

Disney+ also revealed the official poster for the upcoming project, which is a LEGO brick version of the MCU’s Avengers: Endgame poster, except the Avengers’ logo is inr ed instead of purple.

LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red poster and Avengers: Endgame poster
Disney+

Some of the bricks on the poster for the LEGO special even seem to be wisping away due to Thanos‘ snap, which is pretty much identical to how some of the Avengers logo in the Endgame poster is.

This project was already teased at LEGO’s Brickbuster Video Booth at San Diego Comic-Con when an official poster was revealed.

What Will the LEGO Marvel Special Be About?

Since this project will be released on Disney+, it is safe to assume that it will be some sort of play on the MCU’s Avengers.

It is important to note that this obviously will not be canon to the MCU and is just meant for fans to watch the special for some lighthearted entertainment.

Due to the Comic-Con poster that was released, the project will likely feature many well-known Avengers members that are no longer a part of the MCU such as Iron Man and Steve Rogers’ Captain America. However, they almost definitely will not be voiced by Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans.

Some of the characters could actually be portrayed by the actors that play them in the MCU, though.

For example, in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, Billy Dee Williams came back to voice Lando Calrissian and Kelly Marie Tran voiced Rose Tico.

Both of those actors played the live-action canon counterparts of their LEGO characters, so the same situation could occur for this upcoming Code Red special.

LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red will be released on Disney+ on October 27.

Summary

  • Timothee Chalamet could potentially play Robin in The Batman – Part II, as fan art imagines him in the Robin suit.
  • The design for Robin in The Batman – Part II combines elements from Robert Pattinson’s Batsuit and previous live-action Robin costumes.
  • The introduction of Robin in the franchise raises ethical questions about Batman taking on a young sidekick and there are different options for how they could handle the character’s backstory and age.

New The Batman – Part II fan art imagines Timothee Chalamet as Robin in Matt Reeves’ independent DC Universe. Following its 2022 reboot, The Batman universe is just getting started as Reeves is building out his own world around Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader. While the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still in effect, The Batman – Part II is still on its way, with details currently being kept under wraps.

One of the biggest rumors that have been floating around is that Dick Grayson, a.k.a. Robin, is supposedly making his debut in The Batman – Part II, although Warner Bros. Discovery has yet to confirm nor deny said reports. A favored candidate for the iconic DC role is Chalamet, and to give a better idea of what he could look like as Robin, Buffy2Ville shared artwork with the Dune actor in the suit.

This design for Robin in The Batman – Part II is a mixture of Pattinson’s original Batsuit while also drawing some inspiration from the Robin live-action costumes on Titans. The last time Dick was featured in a DC live-action movie was in Batman & Robin when Chris O’Donnell portrayed him in 1997, following his debut in Batman Forever.

Will The Batman 2 Introduce A Robin For Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight?

Ever since The Batman press tour, there were a lot of talks from Pattinson about wanting to see Robin in this universe, especially as The Dark Knight trilogy skipped tackling the Bat-Family. While The Batman franchise is still following a young Caped Crusader at this point, there is nothing preventing The Batman – Part II from actually introducing the famous sidekick. The bigger question is more so about how they would go about it, as there have been discussions about the ethical aspects of Batman taking a kid under his wing to fight crime.

Having Dick come in as a teenager could go either way for The Batman – Part II as it would be faithful to the comics but also still put Bruce in a terrible light. The best way they could handle the introduction of Robin would be if they take some liberties with his backstory and have Dick become the Boy Wonder when he is at least 18, avoiding the potential backlash if he were not a young adult. The other option is that they skip the Robin phase altogether and have Dick enter Bruce’s life as Nightwing while being closer in age to the Dark Knight.

Given the Elseworlds nature of The Batman franchise, taking some creative freedom with Dick as Robin or Nightwing wouldn’t exactly be too far a stretch. Batman TV shows and movies have occasionally also tinkered with the mythology, and there is no reason why The Batman – Part II and beyond couldn’t do that. At the end of the day, if Robin actually does show up in The Batman – Part II, it will be fascinating to see how Reeves will handle the characterization of Dick, especially as he starts building out the Bat-Family in Pattinson’s world.

Summary Timothee Chalamet could potentially

It’s no secret that out of all the weapons in Genshin Impact, the polearm leaves a little more to be desired when it comes to building a proper DPS. And for Arlecchino, a highly anticipated upcoming character, this may seem like a bit of a disappointment for some fans in the community. Rumored to be a sword-user for so long, this takes a big jump from having one of the best weapons in the game to one of the typically weaker weapons.

The polearm is meant to get out a lot of hits in a short amount of time, so the damage per hit tends to be weaker than average when compared to the sword or claymore. There also aren’t a lot of DPS polearm users in Genshin Impact with Hu Tao and perhaps Raiden being the exception. While the game does allow for flexibility by changing the weapon and artifacts, what comes down to a DPS and Support/Burst is the numbers that increase based on their leveling.

So for Arlecchino to be a polearm is quite surprising news and is leaving fans a bit mixed on what to think. At the end of the day, however, she is another Harbinger that Travelers will be able to play so her kit and personality may be what becomes the deciding factor for her banner.

Not much yet is confirmed about her kit except for speculation that, like most Fontaine characters, she will have techniques surrounding her Max HP. However, if she’s anything like Lyney, this is not indicative of how she should be built. There may still be hope for her kit if her Signature weapon turns out to be similar to Hu Tao’s Staff of Homa and Lyney’s The Great Magic which scales off Crit Damage but also boosts HP in its passive.

Another revelation from the leaks is little Melusine-Hybrid, Sigewinne who first debuted in the Overture Teaser: The Final Feast alongside Wriothesley. This little girl will be the first Four-Star Hydro Bow-User and will likely run either alongside Arlecchino’s banner or sometime within the same update as Arlecchino. Not much is known about her character aside from that she works as a nurse close to Wriothesley and, as a Melusine, has a strange form of appearing more like a human.

As leaks, all of this information isn’t set in stone since HoYoverse may make some changes between now and when they confirm the final release of these two characters. There’s still a lot that isn’t certain, the main detail is that it is unknown when Arlecchino and Sigewinne will actually release along the 4.X timeline. But be sure to keep checking back as we learn more about upcoming characters and future kits.

It’s no secret that out of all

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight Canada at the world premiere of his biographical documentary “Sly,” Sylvester Stallone called himself “the last of the dinosaurs” while praising his career longevity. The “Rocky” icon was referring to the fact that he’s one of the few ’80s action stars left continuing to headline movies, which is the case with the upcoming fourth “Expendables” movie. He’s also the lead of the Paramount+ series “Tulsa King,” which has been renewed for a second season.

“You can’t be prepared for this…the longevity of this career is mind-blowing,” Stallone said. “It’s just mind-blowing because I don’t know how much longer you can wait. Society is changing, the commerciality in cinema, it’s faster. So longevity would become a premium.”

Stallone continued, “I consider myself like the last of the dinosaurs, you know what I mean? And I’m very proud of that. But yeah, you have to really think about that. It’s incredible. I mean it’s been almost 50 years… So I don’t take it for granted, but I really want to spend it with my loved ones. The majority of what’s left.”

The 77-year-old actor is front and center in “Expend4bles,” which co-stars his fellow ’80s action star Dolph Lundgren. Stallone’s contemporaries such as Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger no longer act for the most part. In Schwarzenegger’s Netflix documentary “Arnold,” Stallone said there’s no question that Schwarzenegger was the more ideal action hero.

“The ’80s was a very interesting time because the definitive ‘action guy’ had not really been formed yet,” Stallone said. “Up until that time, action was a car chase like ‘Bullitt’ or ‘The French Connection.’ A film all about intellect and innuendo and verbal this and verbal that.”

Stallone credited Schwarzenegger with making action cinema more dependent on the actor.

“You actually relied upon your body to tell the story,” Stallone said. “Dialogue was not necessary. I saw that there was an opportunity, because no one else was doing this except some other guy from Austria, who doesn’t need to say much… He was superior. He just had all the answers. He had the body. He had the strength. That was his character.”

“I had to get my ass kicked constantly, whereas Arnold, he never got hurt much,” Stallone added about their differences in their action hero personas. “And I’m going, ‘Arnold, you could go out and fight a dragon and you’d come back with a Band-Aid.’”

Stallone admitted to Forbes last November that the two actors “really disliked each other immensely” for over two decades as their action films competed at the box office.

“We were…this may sound a little vain, but I think we were pioneering a kind of genre at that time and it hasn’t been seen since really,” Stallone said. “So the competition, because it’s his nature, he is very competitive and so am I… and I just thought it actually helped, but off-screen we were still competitive and that was not a healthy thing at all, but we’ve become really good friends.”

“Expend4bles” opens in theaters Sept. 22 from Lionsgate. “Sly” streams on Netflix starting Nov. 3.

Kirsten Dunst's Son Is a 'Spider-Man' Fan,

Paul Dano was determined to make the Riddler seem as real as possible for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.”

Dano starred opposite Robert Pattinson in the 2022 Warner Bros. superhero film. “It’s always been hard for me to lie,” Dano told The Guardian of his approach to acting. “I’ve got to believe in what I’m doing. And then I’m going have to talk about it afterwards. That’s pretty painful if you don’t like it. Then you’d feel like a politician or a salesman.”

The “Dumb Money” star added, “As an actor, you’re always looking for anything to grab on to. What’s behind that door? What’s under that rock? Anything that’ll help.”

Writer-director Reeves recalled Dano doing “70 or 80 takes” opposite Pattinson across two days of production for the final scene between the Riddler and Batman.

“Paul loves doing a lot of takes, as do I,” Reeves said. “We took two days on the final scene between him and Robert Pattinson as Batman. We must have easily done 70 or 80 takes. Paul loves exploring. He’s obsessive that way.”

Reeves continued, “There were all these moments as the Riddler where he’d be tickled by something and then fly into a rage. You never knew from take to take where that switch would come. I’d be sitting there with the headphones on, trying to stifle my laughter because he’d always do something surprising. Paul would ask me: ‘Was that crazy? Was that too much?’ I’d say, ‘No it’s fantastic. Let’s do another.’”

Reeves previously revealed that for another scene, Dano essentially was “directing this one-person play on an iPhone” when sending a threatening video to Batman. Per Reeves, Dano did close to 200 takes of the sequence in question.

“It was the giddiness [of Dano] that really got to me,” Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “Calling out the passing time, like he was a game show host. He was so inventive and creative. He’s also very critical of himself.”

Reeves compared Dano’s performance as The Riddler to his turn as “The Beach Boys” founding member Brian Wilson from 2014 biopic “Love and Mercy.”

“That character, he’s caught up in his artistry and he struggles to communicate with those around him,” Reeves said of Dano as Wilson. “That was spiritually connected to the idea of this isolation that the Riddler felt. The Riddler is a product of our time, the way that people become isolated online and retreat to mental activities that substitute for not having contact…Paul is just off-center in a way that makes him very relatable. I didn’t want this character to be a villain. Even in his darkness, I wanted to see that humanity.”

The Night Logan Woke Up (known as La nuit où Laurier Gaudreault s’est réveillé in French) is the latest licensed pickup on the TV side Netflix has made, with the 2022 series makings its debut on Netflix US in October 2023.

Written, directed, produced, and edited by Xavier Dolan (The Death and Life of John F. Donovan and the upcoming movie, The Beast) and serves as the creator’s first major TV series. It first aired on Club Illico (part of Vidéotron) in Canada in November 2022 and subsequently aired on Canal+ in France. The series went on to be submitted at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2023.

The cast for the series includes Dolan himself, plus the talents of Magalie Lépine Blondeau, Éric Bruneau, Karl Walcott, Anne Dorval, and Julie LeBreton.

Here’s what you can expect:

“In October of 1991, an unspeakable event rocks a small town in Quebec, haunting a family who tries to hide their dark secret. Thirty years later these secrets resurface, sending the family on an unstoppable pursuit of reconciliation.”

Netflix in the US, we weren’t able to confirm other regions, will be getting all five episodes on October 1st, 2023. You can see more of Netflix’s October 2023 lineup here.

The series picked up rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, with outlets praising the direction and acting, including The Playlist, who gave the title an A- rating. It sits at a 7.7 on IMDb and 60% on RottenTomatoes.

2024 Oscars Predictions:
Best Documentary Feature

Silver Dollar Road Raoul Peck
Courtesy of TIFF

Weekly Commentary (Updated Sept. 18, 2023): As always, we expect an arsenal of documentary feature titles to flood the field for the voters to sift through.

Wim Wenders, who received a tribute at Telluride, has two films in the race this year. The first is Japan’s official selection, “Perfect Days” from Neon and the other is his three-dimensional doc, “Anselm.” The three-time nominee of “Buena Vista Social Club” (1999), “Pina” (2011) and “The Salt of the Earth” (2015). This could be the overdue veteran’s year to get a trip to the Dolby Theatre stage.

He’ll face stiff competition with names like Lisa Cortes (“Little Richard: I Am Everything”), Errol Morris (“The Pigeon Tunnel”), Raoul Peck (“Silver Dollar Road”) and Roger Ross Williams (“Stamped From the Beginning”). And we’ll expect more to come down the line as well.

I’m keeping a close eye on the animated-documentary “They Shot the Piano Player” from Sony Pictures Classics, which comes from the filmmakers of “Chico & Rita.” Could it go the way of “Flee?” (Although it won’t be an official submission for best international feature)

There’s more to come.

Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Oscars predictions in all categories.

The submission deadline for general categories is Nov. 18, 2023. Preliminary shortlist voting will begin on Dec. 18, with the results announced on Dec. 21. The voting period will run from Jan. 11-16, 2024, with the official nominations announcement on Jan. 23.

The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10.

To understand the tone of writer-director Justin Armao’s Xanadu Hellfire, there is one thing to know: Jason Trost, the filmmaker behind the FP franchise and Wet And Reckless, makes a cameo as a hardcore fitness trainer. Given the style of comedy meshed with sci-fi and fantasy Armao aims for, it is no surprise that someone drawn to the same whacked-out atmosphere would want in.

Ruby (Aria Surrec) has a good relationship with her widower father, Steven (Ryon Thomas), and is obsessed with comic books. Well, really, she’s fanatical about just one: Xanadu Hellfire. For her upcoming 9th birthday, Ruby wants to go to a specific spot in the desert and open a portal to summon her warrior of the wasteland hero. After getting hold of a “millennium staff,” thanks to the socially awkward Dewey (Sam Ball), the young girl and her dad venture out to the sandy dunes. Once in the correct spot, marked by a skull on the ground, they insert the staff, turn it in the proper order, and a portal actually opens and sends Xandau (Macy Minear) through.

The future-dwelling fighter is confused but also excited to be back in time and finally experience the wonders of a burger. Unfortunately, hot on Xanadu’s trail is her evil half-sister Raven (Arianna America) and her lackeys, Valeria (Erica Kauffman) and Sonja (Libby Wahlmeier). Valeria and Sonja especially relish using their powers to cause destruction on restaurant workers and students, though Couch McCoy (Michael McCoy) is cool. Can Xanadu, Ruby, and Steven fight off Raven and return Xanadu to her proper time?

“…hot on Xanadu’s trail is her evil half-sister Raven…”

Sure, one could overthink and over-analyze the logistics of Xanadu Hellfire. How is Xanadu both a warrior in the future and a comic character in the past? How does magic come to be in a hundred years or less? Leggings still exist in 2093? How and why did an ordinary curtain rod (or some such) work as a conduit between the present and the future?

But these questions miss the ultimate point of the movie. It’s hoping to be nothing more than a ridiculous and over-the-top fun outing. In that regard, Armao succeeds. The jokes are offbeat and funny. The kids cuss just as much as the adults, but there’s a running gag about putting money into a swear jar. After a skirmish, a worn-out and defeated Xanadu asks if they won, and Ruby decidedly answers the question. It is a very amusing little exchange, as is the moment Xanadu orders a tsunami burger and has to tell the waiter what’s on it. On top of the comedy, the action throughout is very exciting. The actors handle their respective weapons well, adding a sense of realism to the fights.

The cast of Xanadu Hellfire is quite enjoyable. The young Surrec is adorable and endearing, especially when interacting with her best friend, Becky, played by Chloe Sligar. Minear is delightful as the attitude-sporting fighter from the future. When she retaliates against Ruby’s bullies at school, it is entertaining. Thomas shares a nice chemistry with his on-screen daughter. America is a threatening presence and has the action chops to back it up.

Xanadu Hellfire is a goofy lark of a flick that entertains while it is on. Applying too much logic undercuts the silliness and enjoyment factor quite a bit. All the actors understood the assignment and deliver appropriate performances. The costumes are mostly quite good, and the cinematography is surprisingly strong.

Vancouver police arrested a woman Monday on allegations she assaulted a park ranger in a Downtown Eastside park.

In an email, police said the incident happened around 10:45 a.m. Monday at Oppenheimer Park at Powell Street and Dunlevy Avenue.

Police allege the ranger was hit over the head with an object. The ranger received medical treatment, but their condition was not immediately clear.

Officers who were patrolling in the park responded, and arrested a 39-year-old suspect, police said.

EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate Television has joined other studios in suspending overall and first-look deals with non-writing producers who are not rendering services due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I hear those impacted include Paul Feig‘s Feigco Entertainment, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum‘s The Tannenbaum Co., Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly‘s Timberman/Beverly Productions, Michael London‘s Groundswell Productions and Power universe star Joseph Sikora.

According to sources, Lionsgate will continue to pay assistants and development executives under the suspended deals until October 1 at which time payments may be extended if needed. A rep for the studio declined comment.

Other studios that have suspended term deals — predominantly with non-writing executive producers — over the last couple of weeks include Disney, Apple, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios.

Disney is providing salaries for the impacted assistants through the end of 2023 and development executives through the first week of October. CBS Studios also continues to pay salaries to assistants associated with the suspended deals through the end of 2023.

TV studios initiated the first wave of suspending overall and first-look deals –- primarily with writers — in early May, just days into the WGA strike. There have been more rolling suspensions over the past couple of months as more producers wrapped work on shows amid an industry production shutdown.

The new round comes as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are stretching into the fall. In the first piece of good news in weeks, the WGA and AMPTP have agreed to resume negotiations this Wednesday.

There’s something off about the black-and-white drawings in “Floral Whispers: Coloring Book for Women.”

At first glance, the book is just 26 pages of beautiful women with impressive bone structure, surrounded by or covered in flowers. But look closer and you’ll see that some don’t have the right number of fingers, or the fingers are elongated to create spooky alien hands.

The $7.95 paperback by author “Der Vive,” previously available on Amazon, has all the hallmarks of being generated by artificial intelligence. (The book and others by the seller were removed after our article published.) It’s self-published by an unknown author with no internet history. There are no reviews, and it was only listed in the past few months. The images all have some kind of distortion or oddity that is typically associated with AI, such as incorrect body proportions and at least one mix-up between a flower and a breast.

Easily accessible artificial intelligence is changing how we communicate, work and create. Now, it is infiltrating e-commerce as AI-generated self-help books, mugs, wall art and coloring books proliferate in online marketplaces such as Amazon and Etsy. The third-party sellers aren’t required to disclose what is AI-generated, and it can be nearly impossible to confirm if something is AI just by appearance. The end result is even more scam products in the already confusing online-shopping landscape. For consumers, that can mean accidentally buying something of low quality or even hurting the livelihood of real artists.

“This is a grift,” said Henry Ajder, a researcher and expert on generative AI and deepfakes. “This is just an extension of practices that have existed for a long time. Previously it might have been people stealing other people’s artwork and putting it on T-shirts, plagiarizing a book. This is very much the same model with people using AI.”

What’s wrong with buying AI-generated goods?

There are people, even artists, making AI-generated products or things who are transparent about the process. Other items may not disclose their origins but are so obviously made by AI that it leaves little doubt and even adds to the allure.

“I think the novelty aspect and the uncanny strangeness of AI art can make it very appealing to some people,” said Britt Paris, an assistant professor at Rutgers University who studies AI and deepfakes. “I could see people, in the beginning, wanting some sort of freaky-looking art to put on the wall and brag about the fact that it’s made from AI.”

However, in situations where AI’s involvement is not obvious or desired, a product can be a scam, outright fraud and even dangerous, experts say. The sellers are often using AI to cut down on costs and time and to capitalize on popular categories of goods for easy revenue.

Copyright and intellectual property issues around AI are still in the air. The most popular generative AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, image-generator Dall-E, Google’s Bard and Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion were trained on content scraped from the internet, including copyrighted images and writing. Original creators — writers, illustrators, artists, reporters and photographers — say they are not being paid or credited for their work.

AI can even be used to impersonate specific creatives.

Many image generators have been used to create art in the style of Polish artist Greg Rutkowski, who makes elaborate fantasy landscapes and has spoken out against AI tools. Author Jane Friedman discovered multiple books published on Amazon that used her name and mimicked her writing style. She believes the books, which have been removed, probably used AI that had been trained using her writing to sound like her and profit off her brand.

When it comes to books, incorrect information can be dangerous. Amazon recently removed a guide on foraging for mushrooms that some readers claimed was generated by AI and could have given incorrect advice about what mushrooms were edible or poisonous.

“The accuracy problem is real,” said Ravit Dotan, an AI ethics researcher and adviser. “People don’t understand that textual generated AI is not optimized to generate truth. It’s optimized to generate text that’s compelling.”

What can be done about AI products?

AI-generated content is not banned at any of the big e-commerce companies that use third-party sellers, including Amazon and Etsy. And as of now, none require any kind of label or disclosure on products that were made primarily using AI tools. The tech companies behind the tools being used to make the words and images aren’t required to label things either.

The Authors Guild, which represents many authors whose work has been used to train AI tools, is asking for legislation and pushing companies to disclose when a book is written by AI.

“We see it as consumer protection, but it’s also a way to insulate the book marketplace because otherwise, you’ll just see an influx of AI-generated content on a platform like Kindle,” said Mary Rasenberger, chief executive of the Authors Guild. “It will take away from the market [demand] for human creative works.”

Rasenberger said that she doesn’t think AI can be held off forever and even sees a place for it as a useful tool for writers. The guild’s goal is to make sure AI is regulated, licensed and legitimate, with money going back to authors, she said.

Amazon added a requirement earlier this month that any self-published books that use Kindle Direct Publishing tell Amazon when they are AI-generated. However, as of now, that information is not being shown to shoppers. For consumers, that is a big risk.

“Amazon is constantly evaluating emerging technologies and is committed to providing the best possible shopping, reading, and publishing experience for authors and customers,” Amazon spokesperson Ashley Vanicek said in a statement. “All publishers in the store must adhere to our content guidelines, regardless of how the content was created. We invest significant time and resources to ensure our guidelines are followed, and remove books that do not adhere to these guidelines.”

(Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post, and the newspaper’s interim CEO, Patty Stonesifer, sits on Amazon’s board.)

Etsy said that it is also monitoring the new technology but that it has no rules against selling things made primarily with AI. The company says those products will be subject to the same quality standards as other listings. Walmart did not reply to a request for comment.

A number of tech organizations also are rushing to create tools to identify AI output, Dotan said. For example, Google recently announced it was working on a watermarking tool that would be invisible to the human eye.

How can you tell what is AI?

So what can a shopper do? Until there are laws and labels, figuring out what’s AI-generated and what’s just a weird T-shirt design falls to the buyer. It is not a new role for anyone who has shopped online in the past 10 years. Stores with third-party sellers are awash in knockoffs and poor-quality options, and once-helpful tools like reviews are often overrun with fake positive posts.

As with all scam products online, you will need to fall back on some old-fashioned detective work. AI-generated text and images do have some common tells, but they are not foolproof — especially at the speed AI image and text generators are increasing in quality. (“There are tools today that presume to detect when text is AI-generated, but they’re not reliable at all,” Dotan said.)

Start by looking through all available product images, including inside page previews for books, and zoom in or read the small print. For images, look at the backgrounds, which can often show more errors than the main subject. If there is a person depicted in the art, look at the hands, ears, eyes and general proportions to see if anything is unusual. Always count the fingers.

For text, look up the author and see if there is any kind of social media presence. Being a self-published author is not a sign something is AI, but books churned out by AI will typically be independently published. The descriptions are frequently created with AI chatbots, so read closely to see if they make sense and are describing the listed product. Check the page count to see if the length makes sense.

“I would look for tells that it is very new in the store and that it seems to imitate something that is very popular and older from a known publisher,” said Jacob Metcalf, program director of the “AI on the Ground” initiative at the nonprofit Data & Society. “A pattern I found was the scammers are using common tropes from popular books.”

Thoroughly research the sellers, looking at their other products, business names and how long they’ve been around. Read more in this guide to avoiding scams when shopping online.

For our likely AI-generated coloring book, the author was unknown, the images were filled with errors, and the full title was a long attempt to capitalize on keywords: “Floral Whispers: A Coloring Adventure for Women A Tribute to Femininity and the Enchanting Beauty of Blooming Florals — An Artistic Honoring of Women and Floral Magic.”

Anyone who does just want to color women and flowers would probably be disappointed.

“Whatever AI generates, it will never be as good as human-created stuff. Not if you want anything with voice, meaning or expression,” said Rasenberger of the Authors Guild. “AI is always based on prior stuff, there’s not magic there. It’s just a blender.”

Though “Yellowstone” is now in its fifth and final season on Paramount Network, its series premiere just landed on broadcast TV for the first time, bringing 6.6 million viewers to CBS on Sunday night.

This marks a substantial leap from the episode’s 2.8 million viewers when it first premiered back in 2018 — though that was to be expected, as CBS reaches a larger audience than its sister cable networks, and “Yellowstone” has since become a major hit. For a more recent comparison, Paramount Network’s airing of the Season 5 premiere in November drew 8.8 million viewers, and simulcasts across Country Music Television, TVLand and Pop TV brought that number up to 10.5 million.

Sunday’s “Yellowstone” episode also benefitted from lead-in from “60 Minutes,” which aired right before and drew 11.4 million viewers. The series will continue to air in order, with two episodes per week except on NFL doubleheader nights, when only one episode will air.

CBS is airing “Yellowstone” and other titles from within the Paramount ecosystem as a way to fill out its fall slate amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. For “Yellowstone” in particular, the move makes sense — Variety TV critic Aramide Tinubu wrote that the series’ “new broadcast home is precisely where the massive and wildly entertaining epic should have been from the beginning.”

“Yellowstone” was the first Taylor Sheridan-created series for Paramount Global, but has since become a full universe. Prequel series “1883” premiered on Paramount+ in 2022, as did prequel series “1923,” which will return for a second season. “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” will premiere on Paramount+ in November as a spinoff of “1883,” while “6666” heads to Paramount Network. “1944” is in development as a sequel to “1923,” and another untitled spinoff is also in the works.

Summary

  • David Harbour is excited to be a part of the new DCU and the Creature Commandos animated series, which he describes as hilarious.
  • The series is a part of James Gunn’s DCU and will be connected to other upcoming projects in the franchise, whether animated or live-action.
  • Creature Commandos is currently in production, but filming has been paused due to the strikes. It is set to be seven episodes long. #DCU #CreatureCommandos

The new DCU is slowly taking form and David Harbour is happy to be a part of it thanks to Creature Commandos. Last year, James Gunn was announced as the new co-CEO of DC Studios, a new division from Warner Bros. Discovery in charge of every project related to the characters from the comic book company, which he leads along with Peter Safran.

As a part of the first productions announced to be part of the first phase of the new franchise, a Creature Commandos animated series is in development, joining other anticipated projects like Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and a Green Lantern live-action tv show, among many others.

Creature Commandos centers around a group of military superhumans created by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, introduced in 1980 in Weird War Tales #93. As a part of the M Project, a secret government organization that worked during War World II. Gunn’s version of the team will include Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr, Maria Bakalova as Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot, and Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, which according to the actor is a pretty fun character to play.

David Harbour Says Creature Commandos “It’s Hilarious”

Sony Pictures

While speaking with Collider to promote his latest movie, Gran Turismo, before the actors’ strike begun, Harbour shared some details about the tone of the upcoming animated series and expressed his excitement for being part of the project:

“I didn’t know what it was when it was sent to me; I met with James, and he sort of laid out a lot of stuff. It’s really exciting. He considers it some of the best stuff he’s ever written. It’s hilarious, and the character is great. I think it’s been announced that it’s Frankenstein, and it’s a very colorful, terrific character. So, yeah, we’ve started to shoot stuff. I’m not one to really break, but during this, it is wildly funny stuff. So, yeah, we’re shooting. It’s hilarious and I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Creature Commandos is the first confirmed animated series from James Gunn’s DCU, but the actors behind the characters will not only lend their voices, since if any of them ever gets to appear in a live-action production, it will be played by the same actor. The show will fit into the franchise’s new canon, connecting with the upcoming projects whether they are animated or from any other format.

The series is currently in production, although it had to be paused because of the current strikes, but the team will get back to work as soon as the conflict between the big studios and the actors and writers’ unions gets solved. For now, Creature Commandos has no release date confirmed, by Gunn recently announced that it’ll be seven episodes long.

ApocalypseShadow3h ago

This isn’t directed at you per say, but let’s look at the reality of the situation.

Gamers, again, aren’t going to admit it, but THEY are the ones that asked Sony to make them.

We all know Sony makes some of the best single player games in the business. No question. Even though other companies tried to minimize singles player, and now some gamers try to push a narrative that they were all for single player games AFTER Microsoft acquired publishers making some. Before, it was the bullshit of “one and done” games while crying over something like Spider-Man. Even though Microsoft had first dibs at a Marvel game and said no.

Gamers always asked for Sony to start making online games to the equivalent of their single player games. This is a truth. Asking for a Resistance Reboot, or War Hawk or Socom or TLofU online, Uncharted, etc. Gamers asked Sony to make or bring them back.

But online games have changed from the one shot deal. I don’t care for them, or pay for online. But in order to keep gamers from jumping from the next game to the next game, online games have added more modes, items, maps, skins, etc over the course of a game. GaaS basically. Even GT7 does this. To keep you coming back.

Now, that they are making them, gamers are saying they never asked for them. Which is tons of bullshit. I’ll never play them. But I know why they are making them besides looking for a profit. Maybe some of you just want online tacked on the side of a main game like before. It works. But that might take away development of the high quality gamers look for in the single player game.

Also, the article writer bullshits as well. Says Sony only has one PS VR 2 game. GT7 and Horizon launched with PS VR 2. Just because it’s a hybrid doesn’t negate that GT7 is a VR game too. Just like RE8, No Man’s Skyrim, Borderlands, Hitman, RE4 Remake VR, etc. No one complains about those games but continue to dismiss that Sony launched GT7 VR with a full game. Dismiss that Sony is paying Capcom to keep them exclusive like RE7. They also published just recently Firewall Ultra. Which also gets looked over. They say Sony’s not treating VR well but they won’t say shit when RE4 shows up. Then it’s crickets until some BS site pulls up more nonsense.

Sony didn’t buy more studios just for them to relax in a hammock somewhere. They are making more games. And just like every other generation, the waterfall of games coming will shut the negative narrative and bullshitters up. Then, PS6 will launch, and then we’ll again, hear the bullshit.

10 online games over the course of PS5 generation isn’t much. I’d bet there will be double, triple the amount of single player games because Sony knows that gamers want that. And they do well with that.

Lighting fixtures come in all shapes and sizes, from individual bulbs to panels and monolights. But which one is right for you? That all depends on your project, budget, and creative style.

For this Deals of the Week, we have three brands in three different fixtures to help you rethink how you light your scene.

So, which one will you choose?

Litepanels Astra 6X

Panel lights are flat arrays of LED lights that can create a large soft source without the need for a softbox (although you can always use one for added effect). This makes them compact and an excellent asset for fast-paced shoots.

Litepanels is a company that has been a leader in just that: panels. While it also offers LED fresnels in its product line, the Astra panel lights have been a strong competitor in the lighting market.

Litepanels Astra 6X Light Panel

The Astra 6X Bi-Color LED Light Panel from LitePanels offers significant brightness due to the use of tightly-binned LEDs and fine-tuned TIR (Total Internal Reflection) optics, resulting in a longer throw over a wider field. It offers flicker-free 0-100 percent dimming with no visible color shift and has a high CRI of 95 for accurate color rendering.

Yaroslav Altunin

Aputure amaran 100x

Monolights were a staple of photography that made their way to the film world. While initially made as flash units, they were eventually adapted into continuous lighting sources. Moonlights offer a nice power output with the ability to add accessories using the industry standard Bowens mount.

In Aputure’s case, the amaran series offers a low-cost version of its more robust line of monolights. For budget creatives, they are a great solution when solid output is a necessity.

amaran 100x Bi-Color LED Monolight

Designed with the familiar monolight form factor, intuitive design, and solid core features, the 100x Bi-Color LED Monolight from amaran is a 100W light source with variable color from 2700 to 6500K and a CRI/TLCI rating of 95 to indicate advanced accuracy in color rendering. This fixture outputs up to 34,300 lux at 3.3′ using its included reflector and is dimmable from 0 to 100 percent.

Yaroslav Altunin

Nanlite PavoBulb 10C LED Bulb

The good old lightbulb has never gone out of style. You can use this type of light as a practical or in an array to make a ring light. While the format has remained the same, technology has evolved quite a bit.

Socks are just one of those things. Nobody really wants to buy them, but we all need them. Hence why the best socks on Amazon often pop up in the form of an inexpensive holiday gift or Father’s Day present. But what if we told you that it’s worth paying a little more attention to what you’re putting on your feet?

Our Top Picks:

The best socks for women—be it a non-slip, no-show pair or a moisture-wicking option for sweaty feet—will not only keep you more comfortable throughout the day, but they’ll also ensure foot health, especially if you have excessively sweaty feet. That’s because the dampness that lingers on the skin inside your shoes can cause germs like bacteria and fungi to grow, says board-certified podiatrist Byunghee Kevin Kim, DPM, of Sacramento Foot and Ankle Center. Wet skin is also more prone to painful chafing, which can lead to blisters and, in extreme cases, infection, he adds.

Luckily, there are tons of great socks to show your feet the TLC they deserve, whether you prefer basic organic cotton styles or are looking for something super-specific like merino wool dress socks or compression socks for pregnancy. The bad news? All of the contenders for the best socks on Amazon can quickly lead to decision paralysis.

So we did the work for you, scouting Amazon for the best of the bunch in every category. No matter what you’re looking for—crew socks for daily wear, midcalf athletic socks, or breathable dress socks—the right pair is here.

Life changes with a new baby in the house in the second season of the Children Ruin Everything TV show on The CW. As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Children Ruin Everything is cancelled or renewed for season three (it’s already been renewed in Canada). Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustrated when their viewing habits and opinions aren’t considered, we invite you to rate all of the second season episodes of Children Ruin Everything here.

A CW parenting comedy series, the Children Ruin Everything TV show stars Meaghan Rath, Aaron Abrams, Ennis Esmer, Nazneen Contractor, Logan Nicholson, Mikayla SwamiNathan, Dmitry Chepovetsky, Veena Sood, Lisa Codrington, and Darius Rota. The story follows a young couple, Astrid (Rath) and James (Abrams), as they raise their two young children, seven-year-old Felix (Nicholson) and four-year-old Viv (SwamiNathan). The parents struggle to hold onto some semblance of their pre-kid life while doing their best to be good parents in a city setting. Illustrating the hilarious and varied ways kids can wreck happiness (alter plans, annihilate goals and dreams, and force parents to re-invent their lives), the series also explores how maybe that re-invented life is somewhat okay, too.

What do you think? Which season two episodes of the Children Ruin Everything TV series do you rate as wonderful, terrible, or somewhere between? Do you think that Children Ruin Everything should be cancelled or picked up for a third season on The CW?

Check out our CW status sheet to track the smallest network’s new series pickups, renewals, and cancellations. You can find lists of cancelled shows here.

“Sound of Freedom” is one of the most unexpected box-office hits of the year, grossing over $200 million in its theatrical run. But the film, which dramatizes the story of Tim Ballard and his anti-sex trafficking organization Operation Underground Railroad, has also faced numerous controversies, including a backer charged with child kidnapping, accusations of inaccuracies and sensationalism, and rumors that the film has ties to Qanon.

Now, the film’s hero faces a massive controversy of his own. Ballard, who founded O.U.R. in 2013, left the organization in July. A new report from Vice, published Monday, reveals that Ballard’s departure from his nonprofit allegedly came after an investigation into claims of sexual misconduct involving several women at the organization.

According to the Vice report, Ballard — who has faced numerous accusations of exaggerating and falsifying the company’s work — would allegedly invite women to pose as his wife on overseas missions ostensibly intended to rescue trafficking victims. During these missions, he would allegedly coerce the women into sharing a bed or showering with him in order to “fool traffickers.” He also allegedly sent a photo of himself in his underwear to at least one woman he brought on these trips, and asked another “how far she was willing to go” for their assignment.

At least seven employees were among those who alleged to have experienced sexual coercion and harassment from Ballard, but Vice notes that it’s also believed that female contractors and O.U.R. volunteers experienced similar treatment.

In a statement to Vice, O.U.R. wrote that “Tim Ballard resigned from O.U.R. on June 22, 2023. He has permanently separated from O.U.R. O.U.R. is dedicated to combatting sexual abuse, and does not tolerate sexual harassment or discrimination by anyone in its organization.”

In July, Vice also reported that donors for anti-sex trafficking causes received an anonymous letter accusing Ballard of sexual harassment. The letter also alleged that O.U.R.‘s board and lawyers made agreements to prevent executives from discussing the circumstances around Ballard’s exit from the company.

Ballard did not respond to Vice’s request to comment. According to the report, he is allegedly trying to find a way back to the organization following the scandal. Ballard also made headlines recently when several outlets reported he was considering a run for Senate, to fill the seat vacated by Mitt Romney.
