The BBC has denied a contestant on “The Celebrity Traitors” made a complaint about fellow competitors’ teasing and “macho banter,” saying the claims are “categorically untrue.”
A Mail on Sunday report over the weekend claimed contestant James Acaster had “complained to producers” he was being teased by competitors Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan and was “uncomfortable” with the duo’s “macho banter.”
In a statement Monday, the BBC denied the story, saying: “Claims of teasing amongst the cast on the show and claims of complaints about teasing are categorically untrue. There were no incidents of this nature and there is no evidence to support these allegations.”
A source added “the reality is the complete opposite” and that agents for the three contestants, who are all well-known British comedians, were “aware” and had told the Mail on Sunday the story was not true.
“The Traitors” and its celebrity spin-off is produced by Banijay-owned Studio Lambert, known for shows including “Squid Game: The Challenge” and “Googlebox,” and fronted by Claudia Winkleman.
The show has become an unlikely juggernaut in the U.K., averaging an unprecedented 9.3 million live viewers for its latest episode, which saw comedian Joe Lycett get banished from the castle. Other contestants for the celebrity version this season have included Bella Ramsey, James Blunt, Jerry Hall, Michael Sheen and Richard E. Grant.
“The Traitors” was created by IDTV (now part of Banijay follows the merger with All3Media), first airing in the Netherlands in 2021 on RTL4 under the title “De Verraders.”

“I’m not going to be able to change my voice. Rather than a review, this is a ‘hands-on’ since the HomeAgent hardware isn’t in retail channels yet.
So much has happened since it’s difficult to comprehend that Ugreen only sold its first NAS in 2021 exclusively in China, but its global retail products only arrived in 2024.
Since the initial five NASync models, we’ve seen the incredible iDX6011, HD products, GT series updates for the DXP machines, Pro series additions, and a new DXP8800 Ultra that I covered recently.

Now, alongside those thirteen NAS devices, Ugreen has taken another branch and created the HomeAgent series. It combines some of the development path of the UGOS Pro, a basic NAS hardware platform, with a device that’s made to create a bubble of AI away from the internet to handle a variety of agentic tasks.
Initially available only via pre-order and Kickstarter, with a retail release in early 2027, there are three models: HomeAgent HA100 reviewed here, the HA100 Pro for those who want more AI performance, and the MasterAgent MA100 that pushes local AI power to the max.
Alongside the HomeAgent devices, Ugreen has also created a collection of peripheral devices, including three AI-connected cameras, a smart speaker, and a connected colour E-Paper picture frame.
While the launch ecosystem may seem modest, Ugreen will likely expand this collection in the near future.

These systems are designed to address issues that smart home (or business) users face when technology is so fragmented. Typically, people have components from different brands, Google and Amazon, alongside peripherals made by others, and they try to bring it together using a platform like Home Assistant run on a NAS or dedicated PC.
The Ugreen HomeAgent takes all that technology and control, adds AI components that will still work even if the internet isn’t functional and distils it into an attractive white plastic box.
Instead of needing regular attention, the AI in the HomeAgent is meant to run the NAS and connected peripherals without intervention, and it can tell you if a problem is beyond its ability to address.

Ugreen has offered some amazing deals when launching NAS on Kickstarter, and this hardware is no exception.
The HA100 costs only $799 at the pre-launch early-bird price, down from a $1,599 MSRP. Conversely, the HA100 Pro is $2,699 on a $5,399 MSRP, and the MA100 is $9,999 on a $19,999 MSRP.
The Kickstarter initiates on November 17th, but Ugreen is taking reserve deposits before then, where you get a 50% discount on the HA100, HA100 Pro and MA100.
After the Kickstarter is launched, early bird pricing will be 40% off, and presumably full MSRP will be the norm after February 2027, when the Kickstarter ends.
To get those prices, you need a $50 reserve deposit for the HA100 and HA100 Pro, and a $200 deposit for the MA100. As an additional sweetener, Ugreen is bundling the SynCare ID500 Pro camera with the HA100 and HA100 Pro (MSRP $149) and four 8TB NAS drives with the MA100, which must easily be worth another $1200.
The HA100 pricing is for a NAS with only three HDD bays and 16GB of RAM. That said, it includes an AI accelerator, which makes it hard to compare to Ugreen’s DXP and iDCX series machines.
Therefore, if you are primarily looking for a NAS, then this might not be the product range for you; if you are more interested in AI, it might be.
I should also mention the high-end MA100, which I believe has four drive bays and is built around an NVIDIA accelerator. Considering it was possible a few months ago to get an NVIDIA DGX Spark system for around $3000, that does seem pricey, but it should offer similar performance.
However, the ASUS Ascent GX10 I was referring to now costs twice as much, and that’s for a machine with 128GB of RAM, whereas the MA100 has 256GB. So, at the Kickstarter price, the MA100 might be a bargain.
What I can say with some certainty is that no other NAS brand is making anything remotely like this right now, although there is some overlap with the DXG Spark platforms.

The first thing that strikes you about the HA100 is how much bigger it is than a typical four-bay NAS, like the DXP4800 Pro or Plus.
Standing about 218mm high and 251mm deep, this is a large, shiny white box that feels substantial when you pull it from its packaging.
On the top front is a wide OLED panel, which I think is the same one that I saw on the iDX6011 Pro, but on its side. This acts as both a touch-sensitive menu and can also display various useful information.
Just above this on the left is a volume rocker, and to the right is a microphone mute, which hints that you can talk to this device, or rather the AI running on it.
The front face also has a single USB-C port and an SD card slot; the USB-C is 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps), and the SD card reader is SD 3.0 spec. And just below them is an LED that projects different colours to indicate whether there is a problem or all is well.
On the back, there are two USB-A ports, both 5Gbps, a single 2.5GbE RJ45 LAN port and a four-port PoE 10/100Mbps (Max power 65W) switch. That last feature matters for the unit’s surveillance function, since you can directly connect and power PoE cameras.

Finally, we come to drive bays, and the HA100 isn’t quite like anything else Ugreen has made so far, though it has minor similarities to the DH4300 in that it’s a top loader.
The top of the HA100 is magnetically attached, making it easily removed to reveal four bays, with three for hard drives and one for an AI accelerator. These are all lockable and colour-coded. The drives have plastic tool-less cradles if you use 3.5-inch media, and screws if you insist on 2.5-inch HDDs.
But what genuinely surprised me is that two of the HDD bays are allocated to NAS storage, and one, coloured purple, is meant to hold a surveillance-tailored drive. I’ve never seen that predefined on a NAS before, but it does reveal one way that Ugreen envision the HA100 being used.
On the underside of the unit, there is also a removable panel that provides access to an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 3 x1 slot, which can be used for caching or a high-performance drive for AI models. You are recommended to use it for the latter.
I won’t be tempted to say the HA100 breaks the NAS mould, but it certainly strays off the beaten NAS path, and in some truly interesting ways.

Given how many newer Ugreen NAS designs use mobile Intel platforms, it seems odd that none of the HomeAgent hardware uses them.
Even more curiously, the three machines (HA100, HA100 Pro, and MA100) all use different ARM SoCs, completely eliminating any consistency.
Of these, the Rockchip RK3588 in the HA100 is the most recognisable, since it’s an Armv8.2-A platform with four each of Cortex-A76 plus and Cortex-A55 cores, much like is often found in phones or tablets.
The HA100 Pro is rocking more cores with an Armv9.2-A platform, the 12-core CIX P1 CP8180. SoC diversity is completed with the MA100 that uses a fourteen-core NVIDIA Jetson Thor T5000.
Similarly, GPU power scales by level, starting with the Arm Mali-G610 MC4 on the HA100, moving to the Arm Immortalis-G720 MC10 on the HA100 Pro, and ending with the 2,560-core NVIDIA Blackwell GPU with 5th-generation Tensor Cores on the MA100. This helps explain why MA100 hardware costs so much, but it’s hardly a smooth power ramp.
When the CPU, GPU, and NPU all work on an AI task, the HA100 has an advertised total AI performance of 26 TOPS (6 TOPS platform, 20 TOPS T20 accelerator).
That’s actually not enough to run CoPilot locally on a PC, but it can still run some LLM models adequately. But the total performance of the Pro model with an as-yet-unnamed accelerator is a much more sprightly 205 TOPS, and the MA100, as you might expect, has up to 2,070 FP4 sparse TFLOPS.
So, in summary, for AI, it scales 10x and then 1000x, approximately. Those are not exactly incremental jumps.
It also makes the HA100 look decidedly underpowered, although the Kickstarter entry-level pricing does make it attractive to someone who wants to explore local AI.
What confuses me is that HA100 or HA100 Pro owners have no upgrade path, since the systems aren’t interchangeable in any way. As I assume you can’t put the accelerator from the HA100 Pro in the HA100, what was the point of having the accelerators removable? And why make the MA100 the only one with four bays?
Surely, if all the cases were the same, Ugreen could redirect production more easily than it does now?

I understand that part of the purpose of using Kickstarter in this instance isn’t about funding; it’s about getting indicators of demand for each model. But if you’ve already made too many black four-bay MA100 cases for demand, it’s too late to repurpose them for the HA100 Pro. But then Ugreen already undermined that flexibility with the three-bay designs.
And, here’s the real rub. If you get a low-profile RTX 460 video card and mount it in one of the DXP or iDX machines, then that can generate 242 TOPS of AI processing, making that NAS more powerful than the HA100 Pro. How well that would work in reality is debatable, and I’ve never tried it, but the issue is obvious if you look at the costs.
In a similar vein, the MA100 is up against DXG Spark systems. But all of those I’ve seen come with dual 10GbE LAN ports, not one and four 1GbE PoE ports. But critically, the DXG systems also have the Nvidia ConnectX-7 SmartNIC on them, which is a 200GbE network connection designed to fuse two DXG systems into a single platform.
The MA100 doesn’t have this port, I assume, and therefore, unless Ugreen releases an accelerator upgrade, moving from Blackwell to Vera Rubin when it arrives, then there isn’t an upgrade path here either.
Coming back to the HA100, the basis for my experience so far, the T20 accelerator on this machine is modest, yet it took up most of the free PCIe lanes, leaving only a single lane for the M.2 slot, once all the other ports were covered.
Given the price, I think it should have shared an architecture with the DXP4800 Pro, or better, and maybe had either dual M.2 slots, Gen 3 x4 or a single Gen4 x4 slot. Because Gen3 x1 is only 1000MB/s, and external devices on this machine can go that quickly.
I guess, based on the number of pledges they get, Ugreen will know whether the performance ramp from the HA100 to the HA100 Pro and the MA100 was right or wrong.
My feeling, and it’s a gut reaction, is that all the systems should have shared the same enclosure, the HA100 should have been more powerful, and there should have been more consideration given to a potential upgrade path, at least from the HA100 to the HA100 Pro.

The hardware in this series is effectively done, and I’d be massively surprised if anything changes between the machines reviewers received and what ultimately arrives for those on Kickstarter and in later retail.
That leaves the software side of the equation, and it isn’t at the same stage of production, even if it is underpinned by the same UGOS Pro platform as all the DH, DXP, and iDX NAS Ugreen has already launched.
However, at the time of writing, my DXP8800 Plus workhorse is running UGOS Pro 1.20.0.0142 and the HomeAgent HA100 is on 1.20.0.0127 Beta.
That might not seem hugely different, but there are significant differences between the two, so much that the HomeAgent machine needs a special version of the mobile application to even be accessible.
It seems reasonable to assume that closer to retail release, all the extra functionality needed for HomeAgent will be settled into the latest general-purpose UGOS Pro release, rather than it spawning a whole new separate OS.
The biggest difference anyone who has used UGOS Pro will notice is that you can’t access this version from a web interface, although Ugreen has promised that in a future update.
Using it from the mobile app doesn’t limit what you can control, but it’s nice to use the web interface when it’s available.
It’s a generalisation, but the NAS side of the HomeAgent is practically identical to that in prior Ugreen NAS, where you can install apps, manage the drives and data. Obviously, in this configuration with only two data drives, you can’t configure a RAID 5 pack, but you can configure RAID 0 or 1, and you can create backups to another NAS.
The app selection is mostly the same as that on the standard NAS, with a couple of special function apps that bind the T20 accelerator into the system and an IoT Gateway that are loaded by default. What’s genuinely interesting is how some of the apps we’ve seen before on UGOS Pro now have added significance in this context.
The one that stands out most is Model Manager, since the whole AI function of this system is built around a locally run AI on this app using Docker as a subsystem. By default, the system loads the LLM Qwen 3.5 4B.
This 4B model is a sensible fit for this hardware, as being quantised, it occupies only a few gigabytes, which leaves plenty of the 16GB for the operating system and camera analysis running alongside it. Anything much larger would start to squeeze this box.
To try and make things as efficient as possible, the model has modules that you can either install or not depending on if you want it to recognise people, pets or even the appearance of a parcel. As these features infer, it works closely with Surveillance Centre and the new camera peripherals.
It can also link to Smart Home functionality, enabling it to turn things on and off, like lights and also read temperature and security sensors.
The HomeAgent box and some of the peripherals, such as the SynCare cameras and the Smart Speaker, allow you to verbally interact with an AI assistant, Uliya.
And frankly, this is where things need some considerable work. While the hardware in the HA100 can process 40 or more tokens a second, I’d hardly describe it as conversational.
It can alert you when someone is approaching the house, has left a package, or where a known person is in the home, but ask it anything more complicated, and it often says it can’t do that yet.
While I’ve not tried the HA100 Pro or the MA100, I’d assume they can run much more sophisticated LLMs with greater capabilities, but the AI component of the basic system is more agentic-focused than something like ChatGPT.
That said, you can plug a Cloud-based AI in alongside Qwen 3.5. The current options are OpenAI (ChatGPT), Qwen, MiniMax, DeepSeek, GLM and Kimi, and you will need an API key to plug those in.
However, Ugreen made it clear that the purpose of the HomeAgent was to provide a local AI that wasn’t dependent on the internet, so using a Cloud model undermines that assertion.
Obviously, the engineers can do plenty with the local Qwen 3.5 4B model to make it more interactive and able to handle a wider range of scenarios, but at this point in development, it is rather underwhelming.

The other part of this solution that needs considerable effort is the Smart Home app, since currently it only connects to the associated Ugreen peripherals or Matter-compliant devices.
Since all my home automation hardware is older and doesn’t use Matter, that’s a problem.
I did consider using the Matter Hub on my Home Assistant installation to make non-Matter hardware visible, but the way this is handled on the HA100 requires either a Matter QR code or pairing number. At a minimum, this needs to be expanded to include older Google and Amazon equipment, as well as popular brands like Tapo, SmartLife, and Hue.
I’m sure these things will be added, but unless you have Matter hardware or Ugreen peripherals, it’s a bit of a technological desert right now. Once these items become part of this ecosystem, you can easily build automations and interact with Uliya to control them, or that’s the promise.
For my assessment, Ugreen provided two peripherals: the SynCare ID500 Pro and the SynCare OD600 Pro. If you didn’t connect the dots, ID is for indoors and OD is for outdoors.
The ID500 Pro, which you can get for only $89 as part of the Kickstarter offering, comes for free with the HA100 and HA100 Pro. This device gets power via USB and comes with a phone-style power source and a long USB cable.
Equipped with a 4K camera on a smooth pan-tilt tracking system that enables it to follow movement automatically across a room or even outdoors. Working with AI, it can identify people, vehicles, pets, and packages, and record those events on the HomeAgent for later review.
The only issue I ran into was that I put it in a window to cover anyone approaching, and it did that well, but at night, when it turned on its IR lights for night vision, it blinded itself with the IR reflection off the glass.
Undoubtedly, a superior option for tracking outside activity is the OD600 Pro, which is designed to be mounted outside, ideally on the eaves of a property. It has dual cameras and takes its power from a PoE LAN connection, allowing it to be directly connected with a single LAN cable to the HomeAgent PoE switch. A more advanced version, the OD800 Pro, includes a solar panel and battery to power the camera and can use Wi-Fi, so it can be installed without cabling.
I’m slightly disappointed the PoE ports are only 10/100 and not gigabit or even 2.5GbE, but that’s a choice Ugreen made.
As part of the launch, the OD600 Pro can be had for $159 (MSRP $269) and the OD800 Pro for $199 (MSRP $339), which, given their specifications and build quality, seems a good deal. Hopefully, the devices will also work with an ordinary Ugreen NAS at some point, because they don’t currently.
Having been part of the original DXP NAS launch, HomeAgent has a strong element of things repeating themselves. However, since UGOS Pro has had two or more years of development, the underlying platform is more mature.
Updates for the extra HomeAgent part of this package are arriving often, and things are improving, but with the Kickstarter about to officially begin, and its end a few months away, this solution needs to become much more sophisticated quickly.
Today, it’s another Ugreen work in progress, but UGOS Pro was one not so long ago.
Ugreen HomeAgent HA100: Early verdict

First, I think it’s far too early in the HA100’s gestation to fully appreciate what this device might accomplish, since much of the software side of this equation isn’t nearly complete.
That said, when Ugreen first launched the NASync DXP series globally, UGOS Pro looked decidedly primitive, and two and a half years later it is much more sophisticated.
It wouldn’t be unrealistic to expect it to be much more functional by the time this hardware hits retail, and to continue rapid development from there.
Where I’m less on board is the three different platforms, each based on a unique platform and with a different accelerator.
The HA100 is built on a Rockchip RK3588, the HA100 Pro uses the CIX-CP8180(P1), which previously appeared in the Minisforum MS-R1 ARM workstation, and the MA100 is powered by the NVIDIA Jetson Thor T5000.
The problem with this range is that even if the accelerator modules are removable, there isn’t an upgrade path that can take you between these options. Had the HA100 and HA100 Pro had a common platform, that would have made sense, with the differences being in the accelerator module.
But since the accelerator on the HA100 uses a PCIe 3.0 slot, and the one on the HA100 Pro uses a PCIe 4.0 slot, then that was never going to work.
Unfortunately, upgrading forces you to buy an entirely new machine if you want more AI power.
I also have some negative feelings about having a NAS for home use with the potential of a $20,000 price tag. But that version’s future depends on a company now utterly dependent on the AI bubble not bursting, which seems, at best, unrealistic.
I’ve been a big supporter of what Ugreen has done with its NAS products; since before they arrived on the scene, things seemed disturbingly cosy between the various NAS brands.
The HomeAgent is their most ambitious leap yet, since it glues two elements together in a way few users are considering until now. People who like NAS understand what it offers and how it’s used, whereas AI has unresolved PR issues, a less defined use case, and users who are either negative or, at best, agnostic about AI.
The HA100 is a product Ugreen created to elevate NAS with AI, but it could just as easily drag it down. Only time will tell, but for those who want to ride, the tickets start at $50 for a reservation.
To crystallise my thoughts, there are two ways to think about HomeAgent hardware, and I’m not inclined to favour either. One is that these represent a new hybrid type of appliance where AI and local information come together, creating new efficiencies and fewer dependencies on external services. Or, from this point onwards, all NAS will have a shell of AI logic around them, and the era of dumb NAS will soon be behind us.

Ex-NFL Star Shawne Merriman Ordered to Pay $4M in Playboy Employee Death Case

Former NFL star Shawne Merriman has been ordered to pay up in a wrongful death lawsuit involving a Playboy employee who died of an overdose … TMZ has learned.
According to court docs, obtained by TMZ, a Los Angeles judge entered a $4 million judgment against the former Chargers linebacker and three other defendants earlier this month over the 2017 death of Kimberly Fattorini.
The ruling comes after a jury found Merriman and the other defendants liable last year … awarding Kimberly’s parents, DeAnn and Ferdinand Fattorini, millions in damages.
As TMZ previously reported … Kimberly’s parents sued Merriman in 2019, claiming he drugged and possibly sexually assaulted their daughter before she overdosed following a night of partying.
The lawsuit alleged Kimberly texted a club promoter that Merriman’s friend had poured GHB — commonly known as a date rape drug — into her drink. Her death was ruled accidental, with alcohol, cocaine and GHB found in her system.
Merriman previously denied any wrongdoing, with his rep telling TMZ the allegations were baseless and police had investigated without finding evidence of wrongdoing on his part.
The newly filed judgment holds Merriman, J.P. Castro and Monica Maass responsible for the $4 million award, along with Elias Wehbe.
The judge also ruled in favor of the nightclub defendants, including The Highlight Room, Tao Group and The Warwick … meaning they won’t have to pay damages to Kimberly’s family.
The judgment was officially entered October 5, more than nine years after Kimberly’s death.

Singer-composer Amaal Mallik has come out in support of Tiger Shroff after the actor was targeted in a firing incident in Mumbai’s Juhu area. In a strongly worded post on X on Monday, Amaal questioned the state of security in the city and appealed to the authorities to ensure Tiger’s safety.
The musician, who shares a personal equation with Tiger, said he could not understand why someone he described as one of the “kindest people” he knows had to face such an incident. Tiger escaped without a gunshot injury after assailants allegedly opened fire at his vehicle on Sunday evening. His driver and another person were injured.

Reacting to the attack, Amaal began his note by recalling Tiger’s journey in the film industry and defending the actor’s character.

He then directly addressed Tiger and urged him to stay close to his family amid the investigation.

The composer also expressed anger over the incident itself, writing, “What the hell is happening in Mumbai? 😞”
Tagging Mumbai Police, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, he added, “please ensure his safety.”
What Happened To Tiger Shroff In Juhu?
The firing took place near Pushpa Narsee Park in Juhu on Sunday evening after Tiger had stepped out to play football.
According to police reports, unidentified assailants allegedly fired multiple rounds at the actor’s vehicle while he was leaving the area. Tiger escaped without sustaining a gunshot wound, while his driver, Firdous, was injured and taken to Nanavati Hospital. Another person was also hurt in the incident.
Police subsequently began examining CCTV footage from the locality. Images of suspected attackers were recovered during the probe, while a motorcycle believed to have been used after the firing was found near Andheri railway station. An FIR was also registered against three unidentified persons.
The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is investigating the case.
Eknath Shinde Meets Tiger Shroff After Attack
Eknath Shinde also visited Tiger at his residence following the incident and spoke to the actor and his family. He said he had been in contact with the Mumbai Police Commissioner and Crime Branch officials over the investigation.
“What happened is a very unfortunate incident,” Shinde said, while confirming that Tiger had not suffered a bullet injury.
Separately, social media posts purportedly claiming responsibility on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang surfaced following the firing. Police, however, have been examining the authenticity of those claims, and the alleged gang connection had not been conclusively established in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

“Paradise Lost,” the new psychological thriller by “Train to Busan” filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho, has been sold to 118 countries and will have its U.S. premiere at the 46th Hawai‘i International Film Festival. It will play in the Spotlight on Korea section on Nov. 1 and 4.
CJ ENM, which is handling international sales, said overseas sales revenue alone had already topped the picture’s net production budget. The company put the result down to buyers’ faith in Yeon as a filmmaker and to the reach of a distribution network it has built over years of selling Korean films abroad.
“The film combines a distinctive premise with a deeply felt exploration of family and motherhood,” said a representative of CJ ENM’s international distribution team. “These universal emotions are resonating across cultures and generating strong interest in international markets.”
Kim Hyun-joo plays Ryu So-young, whose son vanished nine years before the story begins, along with a busload of children headed to camp. The boy, Ryu Sun-woo, had long been given up for dead. Then he comes home.
Kim has worked with Yeon several times before. Bae Hyeon-seong plays Sun-woo in his first lead role in a feature film, and the knotty relationship between mother and son sits at the heart of the film.
The Hawai‘i slot extends a festival run that has already taken in Toronto and Busan. At the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, the film played in the Special Presentations section and sold out all four of its official screenings, roughly 2,300 seats in total. It then screened as a Gala Presentation at the 31st Busan International Film Festival, where its four screenings also sold out.
HIFF focuses on cinema from Asia and the Pacific and uses film to encourage cross-cultural exchange. This year’s edition will run Oct. 21 to Nov. 15 at venues around the state’s islands.
“Paradise Lost” is produced by Wowpoint and presented by Wowpoint and CJ ENM. It will open in South Korean cinemas on Oct. 21, with CJ ENM distributing at home. Taiwan will follow on Oct. 23 and Singapore on Nov. 5. Well Go USA will release the film in North America on Nov. 6, the same day it opens in Vietnam, and Indonesia is set for Nov. 13.

While there are all kinds of discussions about who will be playing the DCU’s new Batman in the upcoming Brave and the Bold movie, we also need to talk about Damian Wayne’s Robin.
According to some of the earliest DCU announcements from James Gunn, Damian Wayne’s Robin will serve as Batman’s sidekick in The Brave and the Bold, Bruce Wayne’s biological son in the comics, and the fourth Robin to fight alongside The Dark Knight. As such, there are plenty of reasons to get excited about the DCU’s upcoming Robin, and what his debut will mean for the Batman mythos at large within Gunn’s greater DC Universe.
First appearing in the main DC continuity in 2006, Damian has one of the Bat-Family’s most complex origins, being the son Bruce Wayne never knew he had until he was already trained to kill at the ripe old age of 10. Despite all of his lethal training (and massive ego), the evolution between Bruce and Damian as they learn to become both partners and family is one I couldn’t be more excited to see in live-action. Keeping that in mind, here are eight things The Brave and the Bold absolutely needs to get right when it comes to bringing Damian Wayne’s Robin into the DCU.
The DCU’s Robin Needs To Be The Right Age

First and foremost, Damian Wayne should probably be around 10 to 12 years old when he first appears in The Brave and the Bold. It’s the age that Damian will no doubt work best, either meeting Bruce for the first time in the movie itself or with the duo working and living together for just a couple of years. Given that he’s the fourth Robin in the comics, it stands to reason that Damian should still be on the younger side of his teenage years at least, allowing his predecessors like Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake to be older (but not too old).
Unlike Joel Schumacher’s Batman films (the last movies to feature a live-action Robin), a younger Damian would give the DCU a genuinely young sidekick fighting alongside The Dark Knight, just like in the comics. Likewise, Damian being younger would also help maintain the accuracy of his origins and the stark contrast of his age compared to his extensive training. And speaking of his training…
Damian Wayne Needs His League of Assassins Origins

Damian Wayne’s secret upbringing with the League of Assassins is essential to understanding why he behaves so differently from other Robins. After all, he’s not just the son of Batman in the comics. He’s also the son of Talia al Ghul and grandson of Ra’s al Ghul, the Demon’s Head and leader of the League. As such, Damian was trained from birth to be one of the most formidable warriors in the entire world, well before he met his father.
Without question, the DCU needs to preserve those origins, with Bruce having no idea about Damian or his dark training until the boy is already around 10 years old. Likewise, the influence of Damian’s mother and grandfather should still be present even after Damian leaves them to live with his father in Gotham.
The DCU’s Robin Needs A Comic-Accurate Costume

Robin’s costume is easily one of the most recognizable superhero designs in DC Comics, though Damian’s Robin costume in particular does offer the chance to put some fresher spin on it, as his League history sees him incorporating a hood as well as some gray into the traditional red, yellow, and green color scheme. Ultimately, the goal should be to still capture the spirit of the comics and the distinct difference between Robin’s brighter costume next to Batman’s.
Perhaps some grey in Damian’s costume could justify the DCU Batman having a more comic-accurate grey underneath his black cape and cowl, something we’ve seen recently with Ben Affleck and Robert Pattinson’s respective bat suits. Then again, a blue cape and cowl could help the DCU Batman feel more distinct from Pattinson, while at the same time pairing better with Robin’s brighter color scheme.
Damian Should Be Entering Into An Established Bat-Family
One of the biggest advantages of introducing Damian relatively early is establishing a pre-existing Bat-Family in the DCU. By having Damian as a new or recent addition, audiences could meet a Batman who’s already spent years building relationships and a family of crime fighters with Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Barbara Gordon, and more Gotham vigilantes. The audience could then share Damian’s fresher perspective, being introduced to and exploring this new family he’s only just now joining as its newest member.
There Needs To Be Plenty of Sibling Robin Rivalries/Dynamics

One of the best parts of Damian’s character in the comics is his interactions and relationships with his fellow Robins. Despite his youth, Damian’s unorthodox upbringing and training have given him an intense superiority complex, intense arrogance, and a massive ego, leading him to fully believe that he’s the most capable Robin when he first joins his father’s crusade, not to mention his status as Bruce’s sole biological son.
While this has naturally created rifts and clashes with Batman’s other sons, like Tim Drake’s Robin and Jason Todd’s Red Hood, Damian does have a genuine bond with Dick Grayson’s Nightwing, having come to view Dick as a genuine older brother who has often been able to connect with Damian in ways Bruce has struggled to achieve. At any rate, there’s so much potential when it comes to Damian’s relationships with the other Robins in the DCU.
Damian’s Robin Needs To Feel Like An Unprecedented Challenge

Perhaps more than anything, Damian Wayne’s mere existence needs to turn Batman’s world on its head. Whether The Brave and the Bold begins immediately after his son’s arrival in Gotham or even a couple of years in, Bruce needs to feel wildly unprepared for the challenge that is raising a child like Damian.
If anything, one of the biggest challenges that comes with Damian is his dark upbringing, having been trained to kill and conditioned to believe that violence is more often than not the most effective solution. It means Batman has to teach Damian a level of restraint and moral obligation running counter to everything Damian was taught since birth. Not only that, but Bruce also has to figure out how to be a genuine father to Damian at the same time.
A True Father-Son Dynamic For Damian And Bruce

Going further, the relationship between Bruce and Damian as father and son should absolutely be the emotional heart of The Brave and the Bold (whenever it finally releases). As previously mentioned, the level of effort required to forge a genuine bond between Bruce and Damian, given the circumstances of Damian’s upbringing, is no small thing. It certainly hasn’t been in the comics.
This is also just a chance to explore a side of Batman we haven’t really seen before on-screen as a legitimate father. Hopefully, Batman and Robin’s relationship as father and son will gradually develop over time as they learn how to work and live together in the DCU.
Damian’s Robin Should Have Real Vulnerability Underneath

For all his arrogance, ego, and bravado, Damian Wayne is still a child with genuine vulnerability under the surface. It’s what makes him such a compelling character in the comics, and should absolutely be translated to the DCU as well. This is a boy who was denied a normal childhood and is suddenly expected to live with a father and family he barely knows (not to mention one with a whole crusade against crime).
While Damian’s darker nature and arrogance are necessary to his character, the DCU can’t forget that leaving the League and coming to Gotham is what allows him to start growing and evolving as the new Robin is exposed to more genuine love and support from his father and the rest of the Bat Family. Hopefully, we’ll see exactly that in The Brave and the Bold and more Batman projects in the DCU.

Korea’s CJ ENM has sold Paradise Lost, the psychological thriller from Train To Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, to 118 countries worldwide, including Twin for Japan, The Jokers Films for France, and Well Go USA for North America.
The film is also set to receive its US premiere in the ‘Spotlight on Korea’ section of this year’s Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) on November 1 and 4, following sold-out screenings at Toronto and Busan film festivals. The film screened in the Special Presentations section at Toronto, followed by the Gala Presentation section of Busan.
Among other territories that have acquired the film are Taiwan (Long Shong), Singapore (Shaw), Spain (Youplanet Pictures), Benelux (18K Film), Mongolia (Content Distribution), Philippines (Pioneer Films), Middle East (Gulf Film) and Cambodia (Westec Media), while Emphasis has inflight rights.
CJ ENM said the film’s international sales revenue has exceeded its net production budget. Yeon is well known internationally through films such as Train To Busan, Peninsula, and Colony, which premiered Out of Competition at this year’s Cannes film festival.
Starring Hyun-joo Kim and Hyeon-seong Bae, Paradise Lost follows a mother whose son disappeared nine years earlier when a bus carrying children to a camp mysteriously vanished. Her life takes an unexpected turn when her son, long presumed dead, returns alive.
This year’s HIFF runs from October 21 through November 15 across the Hawaiian Islands. The festival showcases films from around the world, with a particular focus on Asia and the Pacific.

After all, show co-creator Jason Sudeikis thought the series would end with Season 3. Then came Season 4.
Sudeikis held forth recently on the podcast Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso about the prospects for Seasons 5 and 6.
Sudeikis indicated he “would like to” do more seasons but, he said, “it takes a village.”
Asked if he thinks Apple would be open to more Ted, Sudeikis ventured, “I would assume so.”
Pressed on whether there would, in fact, be more to the show, the actor admitted, “I just don’t know,” before offering more definitively, “We haven’t started a writers’ room or anything like that.”
Fragoso pointed out that Sudeikis had no concept for a fourth season before creating it, and he was at that point drained, with an empty cup, creatively. The host asked if a similar process could produce two more installments.
“Um, we’re going to need a bigger cup,” the actor joked.
But he did not rule it out, at one point describing how, after a log post-Season 3 hiatus, he kept hearing the voices of the characters in his head. “Then, he said, “other new voices started to show up.” Those were the voices of the women on the team in Season 3.

Now, I’m theorizing that they might after talking to Logan Marshall-Green about “Yellowstone members” who could help his character Cal through his cancer treatment.
Kayce Told Cal About Monica’s Journey With Cancer
In the third episode of Marshals second season, which is currently airing weekly on the 2026 TV schedule, we pick up with Kayce and Cal as they’re going for a ride and discussing Cal’s first chemo treatment. After Marshall-Green’s character told his colleagues and friends about his diagnosis, it’s clear they want to help. Kayce specifically can support in a unique way, because he’s been through something like this before, as he explained to his pal in the following back-and-forth:

I Think Mo And Rainwater Could Play A Part In Cal’s Cancer Journey
Considering Monica died after dealing with cancer, Kayce is in a place where he has a personal and important perspective on what Cal is going through. So, I asked Marshall-Green if we’ll see Luke Grimes‘ character doing just that as we move through Season 2. He said we will, but we’ll also see other Yellowstone folks helping him out too:
You’re going to see not just Kayce, but other Yellowstone members who are going to help Cal and who have history with cancer, especially his family and Monica’s family as well. So they’ll even, you know, be some of the people on the [reservation] who offer some other curative methods.
When the actor said this, my immediate thought was that Mo and Rainwater could help Cal out. In Yellowstone, they were very supportive of Kayce, and they helped him a lot on his journey. They were also very close with Monica, and they’re extremely knowledgeable and connected at Broken Rock; I mean, Rainwater runs it. I’m sure they can help direct Cal toward people and methods that will help him.
While Logan Marshall-Green didn’t confirm this by any means, he did make it clear to me that he’d love to work more with Gil Birmingham, who plays Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty, who plays Mo. When I told him I’d love to see Cal interact more with those two characters, he said:

Say it out loud! Your mouth to God’s ears. It’s like the reason I wanted to be on the show, but I rarely ever am in a scene with Gil or Mo, and I love them. All I want is more scenes with Gil and Mo.
Well, hopefully Cal spending more time on the Broken Rock Reservation could lead to this. And who knows, maybe this manifestation will help see my theory come to life. However, we’ll just have to wait and see what actually happens.
In the meantime, I’ll be thinking about how the folks on Marshals can help support Cal through this challenging time.
It’s hard to imagine any secrets or hints of repressed trauma surviving long in the glare of Palm Springs sunshine that keeps things bright in the airy, open-floor, large windowed home of the moneyed family at the center of Jon Robin Baitz’Other Desert Cities, but survive those secrets do, at least until they don’t.
Director John Benjamin Hickey’s revival of this ever-captivating play, in a production opening at Broadway‘s Hudson Theatre tonight, features a must-see cast of Julia Louis-Dreyfus (in her Broadway debut), Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery and Lily Rabe, but the bold names aren’t the only things that justify Other Desert Cities‘ hot ticket status. Though it can feel, in tone and performance, altogether different than the acclaimed original 2011 production – of course comparisons will be made, and not always to the benefit of the new take – Baitz’ play seems just as vital in today’s bitterly divisive political and social environment.
Don’t let that description suggest a stuffy, joyless evening in the theater – as if anything associated with the endlessly appealing Louis-Dreyfus could ever be joyless. The Seinfeld and VEEP star brings an inexhaustible supply of audience good will to everything she does, and if her performance as this wealthy, unbending disciple of Reagan Republicanism is short on the studied patrician steeliness that Stockard Channing made a delicious meal of, Louis-Dreyfus’ more amiable (at least initially) interpretation is no less thoughtful if bit less impactful.
Louis-Dreyfus plays Polly Wyeth, a former screenwriter of popular if slight movies about a spunky teen girl (I’m picturing Gidget) married to a former Hollywood hunk-turned-ambassador Lyman (Ed Harris, but I’m picturing John Gavin) whose rightward drift over the years (the Wyeths are longtime friends of Ron and Nancy and various assorted Bushes) leaves her at odds with her liberal, recently sober sister (and former writing partner) Silda (Allison Janney) and the Wyeths’ two adult children – Trip (Joe Keery), the LA-based producer of a cheesy Judge Judy-esque courtroom show (with celebrity juries, no less) and Brooke (Lily Rabe), the black sheep Sag Harbor-ensconced author given to deep depressions and pervasive gloom and anger.
No one could blame Brooke (though they do anyway): The Wyeth children used to be three, cut by one with the suicide of eldest son Henry years ago.
Set in the gorgeous, no-detail-out-of-place Mid-Century modern Palm Springs home to which the elder Wyeths retreated in the scandalous aftermath of Henry’s suicide (he was, we learn, a left-wing radical somehow connected to a deadly Weather Underground-style bombing), the family has gathered for a rare reunion to celebrate Christmas 2004. The big, tastefully decorated Christmas tree is more than mere decoration: It’s a big, white-lighted rebuke to the Texas-Jewish upbringing that Polly has worked so hard to squelch through Nancy-esque poise and the refined tones that seemed more natural to Pat Buckley. Any wonder our first glimpse of Polly is après-tennis in chic little blue and white (and no-doubt-tailored) athletic ensemble, her beautifully highlighted, jawline-skimming bob absolutely unmussed by whatever feats of country club athletics she’s almost certainly just won.

But even that huge tannenbaum is no match for Silda, whose bohemian panache – she wears discount Pucci – and show-biz (read Jewish) inclinations (she quotes Totie Fields) clearly grates on the disdainful Polly. So ungiving is Polly that we instantly side with Silda (and, of course, Janney, one of few performers who can go head-to-head with Louis-Dreyfus in the likability department and who is greeted with wild applause upon her delayed entrance on stage).
In the choose-sides battleground that is the Wyeth home, daughter Brooke is defintely on Team Silda. In fact, she’s Silda Plus. Rueful and, in her own way, as caustic as her mother, Brooke has temporarily returned to the fold following months of serious depression and years of a writer’s block that had even her family suspecting she was a one-hit wonder after the publication of her celebrated debut novel.
Well, surprise and Merry Christmas: Brooke has come bearing gifts – her new, soon-to-be-published novel (and sooner to be excerpted in The New Yorker) that isn’t a novel at all. It’s a family memoir, stuffed with the details of the troubled Henry’s suicide and the parental abandonment that led to it.
If the play’s first act is loaded with some comparatively light intra-family needling (Polly upbraids Brooke – with Louis-Dreyfus’ immediately recognizable comic delivery – by proclaiming “sarcasm is the purview of teenagers and homosexuals”) – Act II goes for the jugular. Mom and dad have flipped out over the soon-to-be spilled secrets that they believe will be nothing less than cruel public humiliation and an attempted discrediting of all the family values on which they (and their Republican friends and colleagues) have built lives and staked reputations.
Polly, in particular, is enraged (the more easy-going Lyman is, at least initially, more even-handed – he simply refuses to read, or comment on, the hefty manuscript plunked before him.) As accusations and remembered psychic injuries pile up, the story of Henry – where he went wrong, why he went wrong and who was to blame – slowly emerges.
Without spoiling the big second-act reveal, no one in this play – or in the audience – has an unchallengeable claim on the truth. Even the proudly-forthright Silda shares only what she wants to share, and conciliatory son Trip, occupying a middle-ground (or rather a no-man’s-land) between parents and sister, can’t possibly establish anything like a separate peace when he can’t possibly know the full details of this war.

Whether or not Baitz’ writing (or Hickey’s direction) can wholly support the major leap we’re eventually expected to take will be determined by each person in a Hudson Theatre seat. Mine was occupied by someone not entirely convinced, and I left the theater questioning the tale’s credibility to a degree I don’t recall asking when I saw the original production 15 years ago (the play or my memory? who’s to say). There are a few clues along the way that, in retrospect, support the big twist, but nothing fully persuaded me of the overall credibility of the secrets exposed, or their plausibility beyond the dramatic demands of plot.
Still, there’s no doubt that we want to follow this cast wherever it asks us to go, even when that’s a pretty big ask. The cast itself can occasionally seem tentative, particularly Dreyfus during the heavy second act. At a few points during the play an otherwise winning Harris, at the reviewed performance, still seemed to be finding his way through the character and the script. Fortunately we’re all more than willing to cut him some slack after a wonderful scene in the first act in which his former-actor character recreates an old B-movie death scene that suggest Harris has played more than a few of these himself.
Indeed, no actor as familiar and, yes, beloved as so many in this cast can completely escape their own histories, and why should they? We want to give Louis-Dreyfus’ Polly a certain benefit of the doubt because we still love Elaine Benes, an affection that well-serves the play’s dynamic and tensions, and we take to Janney’s Silda not only because of the character’s humanist politics (though there’s certainly that too – some of her lines about the cruelties of a certain political party ring truer in this era than the play’s in-universe post-9/11 setting) but also because we’ve followed Janney since The West Wing.
The two younger actors might not have those lengthy careers but their talent easily justifies their growing reputations (Keery from Stranger Things, Rabe from, among other credits, American Horror Story and a fine roster of stage performances). Keery’s charming delivery of several truth-telling speeches proves that villains don’t get all the juicy, crowd-pleasing moments.

Indeed, Rabe might just have the toughest job of all, and not because she is regularly called upon to joust (sometimes loudly) with performers as skilled and, to repeat, beloved as Louis-Dreyfus and Harris. If some will see Rabe’s righteously angry, often anguished characterization of the wounded Brooke as, well, a bit much, a fairer way is to say we’re bearing witness to the explosions (outward-directed and inward) of a young woman who bears all the pent-up rage of an imperfect child long-smothered by the surface perfectionism of a tyrannical mother. (And kudos to Scott Pask for a set-designed Palm Springs interior that pretty much defines perfectionism with its smug, moderne, desert elegance).
Rabe also beautifully carries the significant weight of the play’s famously ambiguous epilogue, to which director Hickey has added a blink-and-miss-it grace note that poses more questions than it answers. That’s an absolutely legitimate, if superfluous, directorial choice, and one that the playwright surely must have okayed. Yes, it’s a bit frustrating in the fleetness of its execution and vague reverberations, but Other Desert Cities is nothing if not an exquisitely designed study of the malleability of truths long believed settled. Of course it demands reconsiderations, right up to the very end.

In writer-director Jacqueline Elyse Rosenthal’s environmental, apocalyptic short film Europa, in the not-so-distant future, Earth is running out of clean water. A private corporation, Red Discovery, launches a mission to Jupiter’s moon, Europa, as humanity’s final hope. The moon is covered in ice and could hold the key to survival.
Three astronauts are sent to Europa to drill through the ice and bring back a sample. The team consists of oceanographer Yvette Price (Megan West), traveling with crewmates Augustus (Derek Cecil) and Jessica (Valerie La Rose) as they navigate Europa’s dangerous radiation levels to reach the extraction site. All along the way, a mysterious voice calls out to Yvette, until she breaks from the task to find the voice’s origin.

As both a short film and an environmental tale, Europa is quite impressive. Rosenthal said that, as a kid, she connected with the ocean by collecting shells, and making Europagave her a chance to “wonder about our place in the universe and [our] global footprint.” A theme she explores is whether humanity should better manage our living environment for the long-term or exploit it for short-term gains.

Taika Waititi’s “Star Wars” movie, which has been in development since 2020, is officially on hold, the director confirmed while promoting his latest film “Klara and the Sun.”
“I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together,” Waititi told Inverse while discussing “Star Wars.” His publicist reportedly told him not to say more about it during the conversaiton. “Well, there’s your answer,” Waititi said. “I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague.” “It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do,” he continued. “Ice ages do come to an end… Who knows?”
Back in Jan., the director had said he was “trying to go back and harness a little bit more of the fun from the original films, which is what I remember [from] them.”
“The stakes are very high, and there’s serious things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in those films. That’s what I was trying to bring back,” Waititi continued. “I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate to that because they’ve got so many things going on within that space. For me to do something there, it would need to be a little different and a little bit more its own thing.”
Previously, exiting Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy said Waititi’s “Star Wars” was “still somewhat alive.”
Thus far, Waititi’s latest directorial effort, “Klara and the Sun,” has met a mixed response from critics and fans. Variety’s Guy Lodge wrote in his review that “Jenna Ortega tries hard to illuminate this misbegotten Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation, but Waititi’s decision to play it for strained, whimsical comedy is ruinous.”
You’ve gone out and watchedYou Can See Everything, joining the nearly 2 million people this weekend who drank in the Nathan Fielder–Lance Oppenheim investigation into the mad psyche of Elizabeth Holmes. You gasped in the theater, you turned to a friend or new friend unable to believe what you just saw, you found yourself still marveling at the moments in the parking lot and restaurant, you texted your other friends both annoyed and superior they haven’t seen it yet. Go pick up your phone right now, another friend has just written back “yeah, I need to see it” while you shake your head at their deprivatory laziness.
But even after all that discussing, all that plumbing, you still have questions about what “Fieldenheim” have created. We all have questions. Heck, Fielder himself still has questions. “I am still struggling to this day to understand what I went through,” the filmmaker told an New York Film Festival audience last month and said he and Oppenheim disagreed over nearly everything that was happening between Holmes and her husband Billy Evans.
But there are some verifiable facts, no matter how Holmes and Evans have an, er, postmodern take on the truth. Here are six key points you’re likely curious about, unpacked to sate your twitchy curiosity.
So how did this thing even happen? How was Holmes convinced to do it? Here’s how it went down…it actually began with A24.
The company met with Holmes after she called them looking for exposure (lest you think she was just minding her own business when Hollywood came along. Hey, at least she has taste). “It was to have people see who she is,” Evans recently said. But the parties couldn’t come to an agreement, and the project seemed dead.
Then some weirdness (kismet? No, weirdness.) Fieldenheim were — wait for it — at the Magic Castle together when Oppenheim was visiting LA from NYC. During an improv bit someone from the audience called out Holmes’ name. “Hey, that reminds me, I heard A24 is mulling a Holmes movie!,” Oppenheim said to Fielder when the show ended. Shortly after, Fielder placed a call to A24 offices in NY, and the pair were on the case. Or, at least, on some weirdness they thought could probably never be a movie.
So who are the two A24 execs who met with filmmakers and Holmes-Evans, as the movie reconstructs? The studio isn’t saying, but one thing that is worth knowing: the person who ran docs for the studio and helped guide the project earlier on is…no longer there. Yes, she was not at the company to see everything. That would be Emily Osborne, laid off last year as A24 shelved its doc division. She’s still an executive producer on the film though; the legacy runs deep.
By the way, like all good wannabe lawyers, you may have watched the whole handwring about whether the Holmes-Evans unit could get paid and thought: isn’t there a law against that — against a convicted criminal profiting from their crime? There is. Or there was — the Son of Sam Law. But California struck it down a number of years back, so had Evans and Holmes opted for payment, it likely would have been fine even for Holmes to get paid directly. The money could have funded more blood-testing machines!
Does the Alleged Rape Incident Explain Everything?
It comes and goes so fast you have to lean in to make sure you heard it. Did Holmes’ father say, unequivocally, that everything changed for his daughter when she was raped? It seems like that kind of trauma could indeed make someone dramatically pull back, hide behind a false persona so thick even they’ve lost track of what’s underneath
So is Holmes a rape victim? Yes, she has alleged she is — and that it changed everything. Back at her trial in 2022 she spoke tearfully about an incident when she was at Stanford in the fall of 2003, at 19. The alleged incident, she said, sent her on a work-constantly, my-startup-must-succeed-at-all-costs path (she founded Theranos and dropped out of college later that academic year).
What do public records say about the event? The Santa Clara County sheriff’s office had gotten a call late one October night that a student named Elizabeth Holmes was reporting an on-campus sexual assault, at a frat house. Deputies were dispatched, according to a document NPR obtained as part of a California Public Records request. We don’t know where the investigation went from there.
Holmes also alleged that Sunny Balwani — her former boyfriend and Theranos COO who was convicted of fraud and is currently incarcerated too — sexually abused her. Balwani has denied the allegations.
Those details certainly contextualize Holmes’ behavior; whether they excuse it is up to you. But no such context exists for Billy. Which brings us to…
Who the Hell is Billy Evans and Is He an AI Who Came Into Existence with a “Design Me an Evil Trust Fund-Bro Stereotype” Prompt?
No. Maybe. Probably not. We don’t know in great detail what Evans’ source of wealth is in the film — just that he has one, and this makes him uber-credible because he doesn’t need anything from Holmes. (“What does she have to gain from me?” as he says in the film.) Or so he’d like us to believe, like Larry David and his whole unattractive-spouse bit.
Of course rather than making us think “oh, he’s privileged, he wasn’t after Holmes for the money,” what we really think is “oh, he’s so privileged, he thinks he can get instant fame by leveraging his notorious wife and then yelling at people who don’t sign up for the ride.” (Evans’ recent appearance with the low-key folks on the All-In podcast — having quite a film year by the way after their cameo cringily yukking it up upon the death of Twitter in Musk — doesn’t exactly boost his credibility.)
Here’s something to know about Evans: the Evans Hotel Group that his grandparents founded some 70+ years ago (The Lodge Terry Pines, the Bahia Resort Hotel, and the Catamaran Resort are its three properties) has gotten into plenty of hot water with local groups in Southern California. Citizens’ orgs said an expansion of the Bahia, for instance, took away access to the public Mission Bay. Which gives Evans and Holmes frolicking on an endless expanse of beach at their Del Mar rental an added pungency. The family also sued some unions in San Diego because they didn’t like how said unions were trying to stop the expansion. The suit was dismissed.
But hey, Evans is in biotech now. Yes, the new blood-testing company talked about in the 2023 section of the film was indeed founded the next year. It’s called Haemanthus — like Theranos, but with extra Haman — and Evans is the CEO. The company actually is working with a legit technique known as Raman spectroscopy but only seem to have one patent. Blood-testing from the people who brought you and/or defended Theranos, what could go wrong?
Amanda, I’m Going to Take You By Surprise and Make You Realize
You know that scene where we first see Seyfried, when she’s sitting there on the couch watching the Holmes footage at the start of the third act and you almost blink in disbelief? “Wait…who…could it…is it?” Well, that happened in real time — that’s the first meeting she and Fielder actually had. In fact so realtime there were no plans to have Seyfried come in and play Holmes in those reconstructions we later see. Fieldenheim just wanted her to react to what happened and maybe provide some talking-head clarity on the arguments they were having. Little did even they know what it would become — a rehearsal for the eventual Rehearsal.
N.B. That farm Fielder visits Seyfried where the animals are fed (and fart). That’s an animal rescue that the actress and Thomas Sadoski founded and live in in upstate New York with their two kids. It’s a pretty rad place — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on which they’ve saved and housed elderly or endangered ducks, goats, donkeys, cats, chickens and horses, funding the place themselves. They thus don’t take donations, but Seyfried has done work for at least one animal-rights group that is public facing, the anti-kill shelter Best Friends Society. If you donate money, we imagine you’d actually save a living being, unlike whatever time you’re not saving using a Theranos device.
Besides some pretty chill movies, A24 excels at spinning off memes. Hereditarymemes, Uncut Gemsmemes, memes contrasting its movies with Costco hot dogs. The company thought — we all thought — they had a good one with that close-up two-shot of Fielder and Holmes on the couch. It had already been repurposed so many times.
But when the final history of our era is written and the one true artifact remains, that artifact will, of course, be a meme of the egg scene. So banal; so revealing. There is no one way to whisk eggs. But Evans thinks there is, and he is about to joystick Holmes into doing it that way.
The SNL sketches are coming; so are the Oscar bits. An omelet station will never be the same again.
Like, why would we deceive you?
Bryan Prison Blues?
Federal Prison Camp Bryan, where Holmes is being held, already comes off as a mysterious place in the film, doesn’t it? (We still have vending-machine questions.) But you don’t know the half of it. The place has incarcerated a true motley crew of inmates — Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell is currently there, former Real Housewife star Jen Shah just got out of there in August, and Jenna Ryan, the Texas realtor and convicted Jan. 6 rioter who’s had some seriously wild things to say as she tried to become a right-wing influencer, was released from there last winter. When’s the doc of that place?
The women’s prison is a very low-security facility (one reason Maxwell’s transfer there as a sex offender provoked outrage) and generally holds people with sentences shorter than five years. The facility, about 100 miles outside Houston, has fewer staff than other federal facilities because the inmates are not generally considered violent risks. Family and anyone else approved by the inmate can visit every Saturday and/or Sunday. The prison sits in a residential neighborhood of craftsman-esque homes and singing mockingbirds, and the grounds have even been reported by neighbors as almost seeming like a park. (You may have gotten that vibe from the last scene.)
Holmes, per her sentence, shouldn’t be out until 2034. But a judge ruled earlier this year that because she didn’t cause “substantial financial hardship” to victims she can get out some four years early, in 2030. Meanwhile a Theranos investor who was defrauded by Holmes says he was alerted by the Justice Department that, likely because of good behavior, Holmes is actually headed for a halfway house in Austin this very summer — giving her and Fieldenheim just enough time to plan a sequel for 2028.
Cindy Crawford and family paid homage to her son, Presley Gerber, in their first public statements since his death at 27.
The supermodel and actor shared a smiling black-and-white portrait of Gerber along with a heartfelt message, writing, “We are beyond heartbroken to lose our beloved son and brother. We feel so blessed to have had Presley in our lives for 27 years.”

Gerber, the brother of model Kaia Gerber and only son of Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, died Sept. 20 at a luxury sober living home called Resolutions Living in Santa Monica.
Kaia Gerber shared her own Instagram tribute honoring her late brother. In it, she shared a video of the two of them as children, with the caption “i love you the bluest, to the moon and back and back again, forever big brother.” The post also included a photo of the siblings as children on the beach.
In a lengthier essay included with the photo and video, she addressed the emptiness she’d felt in the weeks since her brother’s death.
“I am learning how to love you when I cannot see you. How to tell you something without picking up my phone to call you. How to be your sister in a world that I can’t reach for you in,” she wrote, adding, “I don’t know how to do that yet.”
Presley, who had been candid about his struggles with addiction and mental health during public appearances on his social media account, entered the Resolutions Living home on Sept. 19. The following morning, he was found dead of what police said was a drug overdose.
As of Sunday, the Santa Monica Police Department was still investigating the source of the drugs Gerber had taken.
An autopsy was performed, but the cause and manner of death have been deferred, “which means additional testing and/or studies were requested in order to make a determination,” according to a Sept. 21 statement from the Los Angeles County medical examiner. It could take a few months for a cause of death to be determined, the statement continued.
His death has sparked questions about how he could overdose on drugs inside the Resolutions Living home. The L.A. Times reported that the facility operates in a regulatory gray area and is not authorized to provide medical care.
The California Department of Health Services is investigating whether Resolutions Living was providing any services that would require a state license after receiving a complaint about the sober living home in September, according to department spokesperson Anthony Cava.
Avengers: Doomsday saw that it needed to juggle two Avengers teams and the Fantastic Four, and it thought that would raise the stakes. The X-Men are also set to appear in the highly anticipated film. And it won’t be the new cast Marvel Studios announced at D23 suiting up; the original Fox cast is back, including heavyweights like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Even Alan Cumming, who only appeared in one X-Men film, is coming back for more. But there’s a discrepancy involving his character, Nightcrawler, that’s sure to ruffle some blue feathers.
Funko
As is par for the course for a Marvel movie ahead of its release, Funko released a wave of Avengers: Doomsday tie-in Pops that let die-hard fans expand their MCU collection. Despite fierce competition from Doctor Doom, Thor, Steve Rogers and more, Nightcrawler made the cut, with a new toy highlighting his new costume and silver hair. The Pop! looks so good that it’s easy to miss what’s happening right behind it.
Instead of having Nightcrawler stand still for his Pop!, Funko opted to have him use his teleportation ability. Doomsday is sure to afford him the same oppurtunity, so there’s no reason to have him hold back on store shelves. However, the smoke around the hero as he jumps from one spot to another doesn’t match other merchandise or the character’s initial big-screen appearance in 2003.
Iron Studios
Iron Studios dropped a line of Doomsday statues, including one of Nightcrawler that, like the Pop!, shows him mid-teleport. The color around him is a dark purple, taking a page out of Marvel Comics’ book. Funko clearly didn’t get the memo because its take on the X-Man has him surrounded by a clear cloud of smoke with a bit of dark blue at its center.
20th Century Studios
The blue isn’t all that dissimilar from the one X2: X-Men United used when Cumming’s mutant teleported. But clear wasn’t part of that movie’s equation.
Maybe Funko realized that a mostly clear mold would be most cost-effective and let them produce enough Nightcrawler figures to keep the masses happy. The toy manufacturer didn’t cut corners anywhere else, though, especially with its Jumbo Sentinel. That means the only way to solve the mystery is to return to the drawing board. And it points to a practice that Marvel Studios has been all too happy to utilize in recent years.
Avengers: Doomsday Is Hiding Important Aspects of Its Characters’ Powers

Kevin Feige and Co. have never been above leading the audience astray. Famously, Marvel Studios includes shots in trailers that don’t make the final cut and removes characters from scenes they’re actually a part of. Doomsday‘s marketing campaign takes it a step further by seemingly swapping colors.
The first trailer for the upcoming film ended with an epic clash between Thor and Doctor Doom. As he has done so many times before, the God of Thunder charged his blue lightning and struck his enemy with the force of 1,000 suns. This time, Thor failed to hit his target because Doom stopped his attack. It’s an impressive feat for what Marvel Studios hopes is a memorable villain. But the powers that be might be hiding just how shocking Doom’s victory will be.
A few pieces of Doomsday merchandise, as well as an international poster, feature Thor with yellow lightning rather than blue. While the swap may not seem significant, it could be a signal that Thor has undergone a major power-up, potentially even gaining control of the Odinforce. Marvel Studios wouldn’t want to spoil an upgrade of that caliber, so it may have opted to try to keep it under wraps until the movie hits theaters in December.
Obviously, the yellow cat is out of the bag. And the clear one might be as well. Nightcrawler has received his share of upgrades in the comics, ones that take him from useful in a pinch to a major threat. After being exposed to the X-Virus, Nightcrawler no longer had to see where he was going when he teleported and could carry heavy loads. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all darkness and brimstone because the virus exacted a heavy toll on the hero, even giving him a new, more demonic form.
Doomsday probably won’t have time to pull off an X-Virus storyline because it has enough on its plate as is. That doesn’t mean it has to let everyone else get stronger while Nightcrawler twiddles his thumbs and practices with his swords. Doom is coming, and every hero must pull out all the stops if they want any chance of winning.
James Gunn’s DC Studios has officially announced its second antihero film since the DC Universe kicked off in 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos. Under Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership as co-CEOs, the studio has brought plenty of morally gray characters to the screen. It wasn’t until 2026, though, that two of them got their own movies, with Supergirl arriving in theaters on June 26. The second antihero film is now just around the corner, and its promotional material has leaned heavily into its lead’s questionable morals.
DC Studios’ second antihero film is officially Clayface, arriving October 23. The confirmation comes as the studio enters a new corporate era, with Warner Bros. Discovery now officially part of David Ellison’s Skydance after the merger closed on October 6. The newly combined company wasted no time highlighting DC Studios’ theatrical and streaming future on its brand-new website, where it describes Clayface as an antihero film, billing Tom Rhys Harries’ Matt Hagen as “the chilling Gotham anti-hero of Clayface.”
Clayface has historically been a Batman villain, so fans naturally assumed the movie would be a villain story. Per this new description, though, Hagen won’t be an outright antagonist for the majority of the film. That tracks with what Clayface has teased from the jump. The film is an origin story that follows Hagen’s transformation into the villain audiences already met in Creature Commandos, which takes place later in the DCU timeline.
The official synopsis pitches him as a Gotham street kid turned Hollywood leading man whose meteoric rise is cut short when a local crime boss leaves him horribly disfigured, sending him down “a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.”
He seeks the help of a scientist named Dr. Caitlyn Corr (Naomi Ackie), who introduces him to an experimental drug that could fix his disfigured face. However, the drug has adverse side effects and turns Hagen’s skin into a clay-like form. This story is designed to make audiences sympathize with Hagen rather than hate him.
Moviegoers will naturally root for him for the majority of the movie given how tragic his story is, a direction that pushes Clayface firmly into antihero territory. He’s not a bad guy, but not exactly a good one either. He’s simply a man with dreams and aspirations, an everyday person who finds himself in a predicament that would drive anyone to do morally questionable things.
DC Studios
Supergirl took a similar approach. Kara Zor-El led a difficult life, having lost everyone she loved during Krypton’s fall. The difference between the two characters lies in where their arcs end. By the end of Supergirl, Kara makes peace with her past and embraces heroism, while Hagen welcomes darkness. Kara walks the antihero path on her way to becoming a hero; Hagen’s antihero journey pays off in him becoming a full-blown villain.
Antihero stories have become popular in modern comic book movies, and DC Studios intends to spotlight more of them after Clayface. From 2027 onward, numerous DCU films and series will put such characters front and center.
DC Studios Projects Set to Spotlight More Antiheroes
Man of Tomorrow

James Gunn has always loved antiheroes, as his Guardians of the Galaxy movies made evident, and he’s bringing a similar vibe to the DCU. He introduced Supergirl as an antihero during the final minutes of Superman. In the sequel, Man of Tomorrow, Gunn plans to turn Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor into one, despite the character being the primary villain of the first film.
Man of Tomorrow introduces Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac as the overarching threat, one so deadly that his presence forces Lex and Superman into an uncomfortable alliance. Gunn described the film as“a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.”
Lex Luthor has always been one of the most complex characters in Superman lore, and after exploring “a lot about the evil part of Lex” in Superman, Gunn plans to get into “the heart of Lex” in the sequel and present him as a human being.
Other characters who operate in morally gray areas are also set to appear, including Frank Grillo’s ruthless ARGUS director, Rick Flag Sr. María Gabriela de Faría also returns as the Engineer.
In the first movie, she was Lex’s enforcer, and now that her boss fights alongside the heroes, she’s likely to do the same. In the comics, she’s a member of The Authority, one of DC’s most notorious antihero teams, so this direction fits her character well. Supergirl will play a part in the ensemble too, embracing heroism after walking her own antihero path.
Creature Commandos

Creature Commandos is returning for a second season after kicking off the DCU with its seven-episode first season, which introduced the antihero group Task Force M. The team, packed with more morally questionable characters than any faction in the DCU, returns in 2027, and according to Gunn, the premiere “won’t be long after”Man of Tomorrow arrives.
Season 2 adds even more misfits to the team of weird creatures with traumatic pasts. The new lineup was revealed at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June: King Shark, the same Nanaue audiences met in The Suicide Squad, a gentle 1,000-year-old mummy named Khalis, and the vampire Nosferata join Doctor Phosphorus, Weasel, and a newly rebuilt G.I. Robot, with Indira Varma’s Bride now leading the team and David Harbour’s Eric Frankenstein still in the picture.
Bane/Deathstroke

DC Studios will take its antihero direction to the next level with the untitled Bane and Deathstroke movie currently in the works. Reports indicate the film has been made a priority and will center on the two notorious rogues from Batman lore.
In a film where there’s likely no Caped Crusader, the most obvious direction is to make the titular characters antiheroes rather than outright villains. Plot details for the movie, first revealed in 2024 with Matthew Orton penning the script, remain unknown.
However, when two villains lead a film, they’re typically handed a bigger threat to take on. They act as heroes from the audience’s point of view but use morally questionable methods to reach their goals, unlike good guys like Batman and Superman, who abide by a strict code. This movie will likely take that route.
Dynamic Duo

Another Batman-adjacent film is in the works at DC Studios: Dynamic Duo, which lands outside DCU canon under the Elseworlds banner. The movie tells the story of two of Batman’s most popular Robin sidekicks, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, and puts a twist on their origin stories by reimagining the pair as childhood friends who eventually take diverging paths.
Dick joins Batman, while Jason ends up with the Red Hood gang. Jason Todd is one of the most morally gray characters in Batman lore. After the Joker kills him in the “A Death in the Family” comic run, he’s resurrected through one of the wildest retcons in DC history, with the original explanation being Superboy-Prime literally punching the walls of reality.
DC’s current canon simplifies it, with Talia al Ghul restoring him via a Lazarus Pit, and after training with the League of Assassins and the All-Caste, he returns to Gotham under a new alias, Red Hood, the Joker’s old moniker. As Red Hood, he has largely been a thorn in the side of Batman and the Bat-family, though he fights alongside them on occasion.
2026 has been one of the best years for video games, with incredible releases seemingly sneaking up on us every other week. While we’ve been enjoying the steady stream of new games, several promising titles have also been pushed to next year, potentially to avoid a certain open-world giant.
Shadow of the Road, the tactical RPG from Another Angle Games and Owlcat Games, is the latest game to make that move, shifting from its planned 2026 release to March 2027.

Today, Another Angle Games announced that Shadow of the Road, originally slated for November 12, 2026, will now release on March 10, 2027.

It’s a four-month delay, and the team confirmed that they need more time to refine the title’s tactical combat, fine-tune encounter balancing, and address remaining issues. They’re also improving the progression systems to make party development more engaging, with greater incentives to experiment with different skills and adapt strategies to each encounter.
The demo is still available on the game’s Steam page and should give you a good idea of what to expect. With the additional development time, however, the final release should be more refined. The team has also confirmed that we’ll see more trailers and details about the game world during the delay in the coming weeks and months.

The mixed reception to some previews and demo feedback may have also prompted the developers to take a closer look at common complaints, though the announcement doesn’t explicitly say so. Either way, we’ll hopefully get a more polished tactical RPG when it launches next year. The delay also means Shadow of the Road will avoid competing directly with GTA 6 and its enormous hype cycle, which will easily dominate the conversation throughout November and beyond.
Of course, avoiding GTA 6 doesn’t appear to be a major reason for the delay, at least based on the wording of the announcement. Still, having a few months of breathing room before Rockstar’s next open-world blockbuster arrives should be a welcome bonus for the team. It’s still coming to PC only, though that could change in the coming months.
The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call will be back in the emergency room for Seasons 2 and 3.
The Korean Netflix drama series has gone into production on the second and third runs of the show, with stars Ju Ji-hoon (Kingdom) and Choo Young-woo (The Tale of Lady Ok) returning.
Also back in the cast are Yoon Kyung-ho (Husbands in Action) and Jeong Jae-kwang (Take Charge of My Heart), while Park Gyeong-won, and Jeong Ye-in have come through a “rigorous audition process” to join the ensemble.
The new seasons will see Baek Kang-hyuk (Ju Ji-hoon), a genius surgeon returning alongside his protégé, Yang Jae-won (Choo), Han Yu-rim (Yoon Kyung-ho), who originally opposed Kang-hyuk but is now his trusted partner and the chief of planning and coordination at Hankuk National University Hospital and anesthesiologist Park Gyeong-won (Jeong Jae-kwang). Nurse Cheon Jang-mi (Jeong Ye-in) joins the team.
Director Lee Do-yun will again helm the series, and is also penning the scripts.
The show is based on the webttoon Trauma Center: Golden Hour, with Studio N and Mays Entertainment attached as co-producers. Season 1 was a hit for Netflix, hitting Top 10 lists in 63 countries last year, and topping the list in 18 countries worldwide.
“Obsession” star Inde Navarrette had quite the busy weekend, going from the Academy Museum Gala on Saturday to the Newport Beach Film Festival on Sunday.
Navarrette attended the festival, which runs until Thursday in Newport Beach, as one of Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch, who were celebrated during the festival’s Honor Brunch.
While speaking with Variety’s Marc Malkin at the festival’s carpet, Navarrette said attending the gala was “amazing.” “I mean, you’re just overwhelmed and kind of drowning in everybody that you have looked up to, possibly ever, and it’s just so lovely meeting people and the reception that ‘Obsession’ has been getting… I’m just so honored to go and be with the members of the Academy and just get an inside scoop on what that magnificent world is like.”
Jessica Lange and Pamela Anderson were two of the actresses Navarrette was excited to see Saturday night. “I spoke to Jessica Lange, who is an icon,” she said. “[And] the way that Pamela carries herself with such grace and honesty and just pure creativity and love is just exactly who I want to be.”
And Navarrette’s schedule isn’t slowing down just yet — she’s set to host this year’s “Saturday Night Live” Halloween episode with musical guest Gracie Abrams.
“I literally I feel like I snuck in,” joked the actress. “I’m super excited to keep everything under wraps because I really truly want to make this super fun for the audience. And what I love is when I don’t know anything. So I’m really excited to be working with the writers.”
Also on the horizon is the MCU’s forthcoming “X-Men” film, in which she’ll play Rogue. Navarrette told Malkin she hasn’t corresponded directly with Anna Paquin, who originated the role, but feels “the correspondence started when I was younger, when I really fell in love with the ‘X-Men’ movies in the first place.”
On the topic of stunt training for the superhero film, Navarrette said it’s a good excuse to get herself in the gym. “I’ve always wanted to take part in that sort of a thing,” she said. “I think it’s also a really good excuse to get in the gym. I’m the laziest person, and I am very excited to get up and move my body.”

SPOILER ALERT:This article contains major spoilers for the Oct. 18 episode of “The Simpsons,” “The Revengening,” which aired Sunday night on Fox.
“The Simpsons” has pulled off its own October surprise: Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is back. The fan favorite character finally spoke again for the first time in nearly a decade on Sunday night’s episode, “The Revengening.” Variety has exclusively learned who is behind Apu’s new voice: actor and voice-over vet Sunil Malhotra (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Legend of Korra”).
Malhotra’s hiring and the return of Apu — who has been seen, but not heard on “The Simpsons” since the October 2017 episode “The Serfsons” — was a closely guarded secret inside “The Simpsons” universe. Fox didn’t share a screener for “The Revengening,” and producers kept both the episode’s table read and its subsequent production under tight protocols (including NDAs for all involved).
Also heard on Sunday’s episode was the debut of Janina Gavankar (“The Morning Show”) as Apu’s wife, Manjula. And now that Apu is back and the Kwik-E-Mart has reopened, executive producer Matt Selman said both characters and the Nahasapeemapetilon family will once again be seen (and heard) on “The Simpsons” more often.
“We love this character, and wanted to bring him back in a smart, ‘Simpsons’-y way that allowed him to evolve,” Selman said. “We’re excited by what Sunil has already brought to the role, and look forward to seeing more of Apu in the future.”
Hank Azaria previously voiced Apu, a character that has been controversial over the years due to its stereotypical portrayal of a South Asian convenience store clerk. The issue of Apu was the centerpiece of the 2017 documentary “The Problem With Apu,” in which comedian Hari Kondabolu discussed the impact the character has had on people of South Asian descent.
After that doc made waves — including in “The Simpsons” writers’ room, where it was screened and discussed — Azaria announced that he would no longer voice Apu. “I apologize for my part in creating that and participating in that,” Azaria said in 2021 on Dax Shepard’s podcast “Armchair Expert.” “Part of me feels like I need to go to every single Indian person in this country and personally apologize. And sometimes I do.”
In the aftermath, Apu was shifted to the background on “The Simpsons,” as producers decided how to handle the character going forward. For years, that meant Apu would still occasionally be seen in Springfield, but never heard.
Until now. The idea of bringing back Apu this way, as one of this year’s Halloween-themed episodes, came from staffer Nick Dahan (who’s the credited writer on “The Revengening”) and co-executive producer Cesar Mazariegos. After hearing their pitch, Selman said he thought it was “a brilliant way” to bring Apu back and reference the entire situation.
Voice actor Malhotra said he took time to look into what it would mean to take over Apu and talked to the producers to make sure the character was more culturally appropriate.
“When my agent called me about a ‘Simpsons’ audition, I knew exactly what role it was for, and the idea actually made my stomach sink,” he said. “But admittedly, part of me was also curious. It had been eight years since Apu had spoken on the show, and it got me thinking: Did the writers’ room look different now? Could they bring him back in a way that acknowledged and apologized for past mistakes? Could I make the character my own, and reclaim him in some way? And could they achieve all of that in an unmistakably ‘Simpsons’ way that didn’t disappoint fans?
“Whether the producers knew it or not, I was prepared to walk away,” he continued. Malhotra said that he declined his very first “professional job offer 28 years ago” because it would have required him to play a stereotypical “Hindu guy,” adding that playing such a caricature “to be the butt of the joke wasn’t something I was willing to do, and I’ve turned down similar work multiple times since.”
But as Malhotra got further down the road with “The Simpsons,” he said, he began engaging with the producers about their plans for Apu before he would commit to the role, where he was promised that the return of Apu was being handled with the utmost care.
“My callback was the first of many times that no one at ‘The Simpsons’ let me down,” he said. “I told casting that I’d only consider an offer if I could meet showrunner Matt Selman and co-executive producer Cesar Mazariegos, both of whom gladly did so. It was the beginning of a deeply collaborative experience that I hope is equally satisfying for longtime fans of ‘The Simpsons’ and for other South Asian kids who, like me, stopped watching at some point along the way.”
In “The Revengening,” a spooky lead-up to next week’s “Treehouse of Horror XXXVII,” a man in a “Daft Monk” Halloween costume (as in, a Daft Punk helmet and monastic robe — wordplay!) is accidentally killed over and over again by Springfield residents all over town. A year later, “Daft Monk” is still alive, and getting his revenge by taking out his would-be killers, one by one.
Eventually “Daft Monk” summons the townspeople to Springfield City Hall, where he takes his helmet off and reveals that he’s actually Apu.
“I’d be lying if I didn’t say that the sweetest part of all was unleashing that righteously rage-fueled “I AM APU!” — on behalf of so many of us — over and over in the studio until we got it just right,” Malhotra said. “I really feel like we did and I can’t wait for fans to see more Apu.”
Apu then shares his backstory: After he was nearly killed dozens of times, he wound up on “The Island of Forgotten Garbage,” where he’s healed by “The Simpsons” quack Dr. Nick (who also has been seen sparingly in recent years). “All the junk Springfield gets rid of winds up here,” he tells Apu, “like you … If you wound up here, it’s for a reason, right, Leon?” (Out pops the character that Michael Jackson played in the Season 3 episode “Stark Raving Mad,” which was pulled from “Simpsons” rotation in 2019 after the doc “Leaving Neverland” showcased more allegations against the late pop star.)
Says Apu before he reveals himself: “I am the man you left for dead. I am the one you pretended never existed!”
Then, unmasked, he tells the Springfield crowd: “It would have been so easy to bring me back. I immediately ran home to my family, but they were gone. Then I went to the Kwik-E-Mart, and was shocked to find it abandoned. As I wandered aimlessly through town, no one even noticed me. It was as if I was invisible. That was when I vowed to take my revenge on Springfield.”
He’s about to light City Hall on fire, but Marge Simpson pipes up — representing the Springfield citizens, but also clearly serving as a mouthpiece for the show’s producers: “Apu, we’re so sorry we left you for dead. Believe me, we wanted to do the right thing.”
Bart adds: “But we were so scared, and just didn’t know what to do.”
Lenny also chimes in, in a nod to the debates inside “The Simpsons” writers’ room: “If it’s any consolation, we had so many internal conversations about it.”
But, Carl finishes, “Ahh, they kind of just didn’t go anywhere.” (And for almost a decade, that’s how “The Simpsons” never got around to bringing back Apu.)
Homer then offers to sacrifice himself to save the rest of the town, and offers this penance to Apu, while reminding viewers how important Apu has been to the makeup of Springfield: “I’m just doing what the old Apu would have done. The guy who loved this town and everyone in it. You were on our bowling teams, our barbershop quartets, our dad rock cover bands. We took you for granted. I took you for granted.”
But before Apu can blow up the town, he wakes up. It turns out it was a nightmare; no one is dead. He’s back in the Kwik E-Mart, and Manjula is there too. So is his No. 1 customer, Homer, who invites him to a Halloween party.
“What the heck? I’ll do it,” Apu says. “A Halloween party sounds kind of fun. Plus, I feel like I haven’t seen everyone in ages. Oh, but I wish I had a costume.”
But he actually does: There’s a “Daft Monk” costume stashed under the cash register. So was it really a dream? And that’s the end of the episode — but Apu is back!
This isn’t the first time “The Simpsons” writers used their characters to allude to their indecisiveness on what to do with Apu. In the 2018 episode “No Good Read Goes Unpunished,” Marge begins reading her favorite childhood novel to Lisa, but quickly realizes the old book was a lot more offensive and racist than she remembered. She tries to sanitize it, but “now it’s as inoffensive as a Sunday in Cincinnati … what am I supposed to do?”
Lisa then looks at the audience, seemingly addressing “Simpsons” fans: “It’s hard to say. Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?”
The scene pulls back to reveal a photo of Apu near Lisa’s bed, and it’s obvious they’re no longer talking about a book, but their own show. With Marge also looking straight at viewers, the two suggest that “Some things will be dealt with at a later date … if at all.” (It should be noted that Apu and his children also appeared in the episode, but did not speak.)
In June 2020, during the post-George Floyd reckoning on race, “The Simpsons” announced that moving forward, its characters of color would be voiced by culturally appropriate actors. Among the major changes, Alex Désert took over as Carl Carlson from Azaria, and Kevin Michael Richardson (who had already been a part of the series cast) became Dr. Julius Hibbert, which was previously Harry Shearer. Now, Apu, with Malhotra taking over, joins that list as well.
And for several years, the creative team promised that they would address Apu at some point. Cameron Winter, in December 2025, after a months-long sold-out tour with his band Geese, returned to New York to play a single show at Carnegie Hall. This is the movie. Winter’s solo album Heavy Metal was named one of the best of the year by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Paste and Mojo and Geese’s last record Getting Killed was named the best album of 2025 by The New Yorker, NME, and Stereogum. Winter was one of the youngest people ever to headline Carnegie Hall (at 23), edged out slightly by Bob Dylan (22, in 1963).
Though this is Anderson’s first concert film, he’s made plenty of musically-inclined projects over the years, from music videos for the likes of Fiona Apple, Radiohead, and Haim, to Thom Yorke’s Anima short film, to the documentary Junun. This also seems to be Winter’s longest on-screen project, as he’s really only performed in music videos and late night variety shows up until this point. Joe Manganiello, who was set to reprise the role of Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s scrapped Batman film, is telling all about what would have happened had the superhero film made it to theaters.
In his new memoir “Bloodlines,” published on Tuesday, the actor wrote that Affleck, who was attached as the writer, director, producer and star, planned to make the film “a superhero version of David Fincher’s ‘The Game’” in which Deathstroke would “dismantle Batman’s entire life” after being made to think the Caped Crusader killed his son (via EW).
Manganiello, who first played Deathstroke, a DC supervillain, briefly in 2017’s “Justice League,” wrote that murdering Commissioner Gordon, holding Alfred Pennyworth hostage and breaking into the Batcave would all be a part of Deathstroke’s revenge plan, and that the film would have included a fight in which “Deathstroke would nearly kill both Batman and Batgirl before they would both escape via an aboveground train.”
According to the “Magic Mike” actor, the film would have concluded with a “climactic one-on-one showdown through the streets of Gotham.” “It sounded good to me,” Manganiello wrote. “I told Ben how great I thought his films were, especially ‘The Town,’ and how I was really looking forward to seeing his Best Picture version of a Batman movie.” He went on to explain that Affleck’s roles on set sounded like “a lot” for a single person, to which the “Argo” director responded: “Yeah, I know…But don’t worry, you’re in good hands. You’re in good hands, man.”
Ultimately, the film never came out. Recently, Ben Affleck appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and called the “Justice League” reshoots the “low point of my career.”
“The experience of ‘Justice League’ was so negative for lots of different reasons, some of which have to do with where I was at personally and some of which had to do with the tragedy that happened at that time,” Affleck said. “I saw how not to make a movie like that, which is where the studio is at odds with the filmmaker. You are really making a mistake. I was really glad and gratified that Zack got to release [his version via the Snyder Cut]. That was fucking great. I was really happy for him. That was shitty, him being taken off that movie and the reshoots that we did. If you want the low point of my career, it was that.”
More than a million Albertans have already voted in a referendum that asks fundamental questions about the province’s future, preliminary numbers show.
Elections Alberta says a total of 1,356,873 votes were cast between Oct. 13 and Oct. 17 through advance and special ballots. That’s compared to 809,988 votes cast at the same point during the 2023 provincial election campaign.
Broken down further, the agency says a total of 837,791 votes were cast at advance voting locations, with 519,082 special ballots mailed in.
By comparison, 758,637 advance votes were cast in 2023 and 51,351 special ballots. The agency notes special ballot totals from 2023 are “not directly comparable” to the referendum, as they weren’t available to all eligible electors and weren’t required to be received by mail.
There were a total of 3,148,343 eligible electors for the referendum, with the agency saying 43 per cent cast their ballot during the advance voting period. Only 27.5 per cent did so during the same period in the 2023 election.

A recent poll conducted exclusively for Global News by Ipsos shows proceeding to a binding vote on separation still draws little support.
The poll suggested seven in 10 Albertans planned to vote for Alberta to remain a province of Canada, holding steady from previous polling conducted last month.

The proportion of voters who said they would vote for Alberta to begin the legal process of holding a binding referendum on separation increased three percentage points from September to 23 per cent.
That support is highest among men (27 per cent), those aged 35 to 54 (27 per cent) and those living outside Calgary and Edmonton (29 per cent).
Premier Danielle Smith has said that if voting goes the way polling suggests, she expects everyone to accept it and move on. Leaders of the independence movement contest that.

Darren Criss‘ one-night-only concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London became a “Glee” reunion when the singer surprised audiences by bringing out Chris Colfer and performing “Baby It’s Cold Outside” as an homage to their characters on the hit show, Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson.
Criss began the song solo, telling the audience he’d be singing both parts, even though “it’s not supposed to be like that, but I’ve managed to pull off so many things,” he said, before Colfer joined him a few verses later. “The only thing inappropriate about doing this song is doing it without me,” joked Colfer before he began singing.
Criss and Colfer first performed the song during the Season 2 Episode 10 titled “A Very Glee Christmas,” which aired in 2010. Their characters were fan favorites who began dating in Season 2 before getting engaged and married in the final season.
