Hundreds of fish rescued from the massive hotel aquarium explosion at the Radisson Blu hotel have survived and are doing well, Berlin Zoo has revealed.

More than 1,500 fish were sent crashing into the hotel lobby when the giant AquaDom ruptured.

A tsunami of 264,000 gallons of saltwater surged through the lobby in the early hours of December 16.

Nearly all of the fish died in the blast but around 200 were saved and were taken to Berlin Zoo.

Zoo officials have revealed that most of them have recovered and only nine of the rescued fish later died.

A Berlin Zoo spokeswoman said on Monday that they will continue to care for the surviving fish.

However, she said: ‘It’s not certain how long they’ll stay with us.’

Following the aquarium rupture, around 630 fish were rescued from its underground breeding tanks, the building owner said.

Some were given to Berlin Zoo, and the remaining ones to other institutions.

The cause of the rupture remains under investigation.

Last month, a German expert said the aquarium in the hotel was a ‘ticking time bomb’ and the accident should have been predicted.

Hermann Schuranm, former owner of Schuran Seawater Equipment, said it does not surprise him that the tank shattered.

The expert in constructing similar facilities said it should have been clearly stated that the aquarium would only be able to last until a certain point, with some only surviving 25 years. The structure burst after just 19 years.

Mr Schuranm claims he was asked for a quote to build the aquarium but decided not to go ahead with it, noting that it was too large and he could not say for sure how long it would survive.

Mr Schuranm said the blame falls on those who built it, adding that it should have been inspected every two years.

‘Otherwise, there is negligence,’ he said.

The contract states that regular inspections are needed, but it does not say how frequent these should be.

Mr Schuranm added that he is unaware of the process that was used to bolster the structure, but noted that if it was not prepared in the correct way then it could have resulted in cracks in the glass.

He told EuroWeekly: ‘That AquaDom should have been heated to 80 degrees with an oven after construction and then again after the renovation. That is very expensive, but it is possible.’

The colossal tank, in the foyer of the Radisson Blu hotel in central Berlin, burst at around 5.50am on December 16.

The shattering of the AquaDom aquarium cut off electricity in the hotel. Two people were injured from glass shards and received treatment at hospital.

However, there may have been more casualties had the freak accident occurred an hour later, when the hotel lobby is usually packed with visitors.

Police said they found no evidence that a malicious act had taken place but the cause of the spectacular collapse remains unclear.

A spokesperson for Radisson Hotel Group told MailOnline: ‘Members of our leadership team are on site, and, together with the authorities, are looking into the cause of the incident.

‘We have immediately closed the hotel until further notice and are relocating guests.’

The aquarium opened in December 2003 and was modernised in 2020.

Reynolds Polymer Technology, based in the US, which states on its website that 41 of its acrylic panels were used in building the tank cylinder, said it ‘offers its sincere concern’ to the hotel guests and workers who were affected and to those who were injured.

It said that they are also ‘deeply saddened by the animals and aquatic life lost’.

There was speculation that freezing temperatures dropping down to -10C (14F) overnight caused a crack in the acrylic glass tank, which then exploded under the weight of the water.

Footage from inside the hotel showed extensive damage to the aquarium, with only the frame still standing.

Broken window panes and damaged furniture were scattered near the scene.

More than 100 emergency workers and rescue dogs were deployed to search the building for anyone who might be trapped under the debris, Berlin’s firefighting service said.

Hours after the incident, trucks began clearing away the debris that had spilled out on to the street in front of the hotel.

The cylindrical aquarium is located in the foyer of a Radisson Blu hotel and has a clear-walled elevator built inside that was used by visitors to the Sea Life leisure complex, which also has a hotel, shops and restaurants.

Operators said the aquarium has the biggest cylindrical tank in the world and contained 80 different species of tropical fish before the incident.

During its refurbishing work in 2020, all the water was drained from the tank and the fish were moved to aquariums in the basement of the building, where there is a breeding care facility for the fish, according to the website of the DomAquarée complex.

The Bild newspaper said the aquarium had only reopened this summer after the two-year renovation that cost around 2.6 million euros (£2.2 million).

Investors in failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX included Endeavor’s IMG sports division, NFL quarterback Tom Brady and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, according to bankruptcy court documents.

FTX’s epic crash has likely rendered the holdings of its dozens of investors worthless. The company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November, had raised a total of $2 billion of capital, including a $400 million Series C round that closed in January 2022 at a valuation of $32 billion. FTX at one time held a reported $50 billion in assets; it filed for bankruptcy after a run on deposits left it with an $8 billion shortfall in assets.

On Monday, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware released a list of equity holders in FTX and its affiliates (available at this link).

According to the document, IMG held 163,000 shares of Class A common stock and 38,154 shares of Class B preferred stock in one of FTX’s entities. Brady owned 1.14 million common shares and his ex-wife, Giselle Bündchen, held 686,761 shares; Brady and Bündchen had appeared in a 2021 ad promoting FTX. Kraft held 479,000 shares of common stock and 155,144 shares of preferred stock in FTX entities through his KPC Venture Capital.

Major FTX shareholders included Dan Loeb’s Third Point, Paradigm, Sequoia Capital, Thoma Bravo, Softbank, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Temasek and Coinbase, a crypto exchange competitor to FTX.

Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested last month in the Bahamas and extradited to the U.S., where he was charged with eight criminal counts including fraud and money laundering. Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was released on a $250 million bond while awaiting trial.

Hollywood has jumped on the FTX affair with multiple projects about the company and its collapse in development, including a limited series from Joe and Anthony Russo’s AGBO production company for Amazon Studios.

If the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ever hoped that Tuesday night’s Golden Globe Awards could be back to business as usual, they picked the wrong guy to host.

But for a needed shot of straight talk, they picked the right guy.

A year after turning the Globes into a private event because NBC declined to telecast it and stars declined to show up, and six months after a reorganization that doubled the number of voters, made marginal improvements in the number of Black members (it’s now more than zero) and turned them from a nonprofit organization to a privately owned, for-profit one, the HFPA returned to a Beverly Hilton ballroom that only superficially resembled the place where they used to hold the Globes.

And the host, comic actor Jerrod Carmichael, pulled the rug out from under them with a somber opening monologue in which he suggested he was hired simply because he was Black, dropped a sobering stat – “I won’t say they are a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died” – and talked about refusing repeated requests to meet with HFPA president Helen Hoehne prior to the show. As the audience sat quietly at what is supposed to be Hollywood’s “party of the year” – that’s trademarked, you know – he forced people to take stock of what led the Globes to be so desperate for a comeback.

Ricky Gervais might have insulted the stars and mocked the HFPA when he hosted the show, but Carmichael silenced the stars and leveled the HFPA. And in doing so, he set the tone for a show in which nobody could pretend it was business as usual.

It was from that position – battered and bruised and looking for redemption – that the 100-or-so members of the HFPA, plus another 100-or-so international journalists who get to vote but aren’t members, tried to show that the Globes are worth saving and the people who win them are worth honoring.

They did so for the most part by doing what they usually do: spreading the wealth, with 10 different films sharing the 14 film awards and 10 television programs sharing the 13 TV awards. The lackluster show had lots of obvious winners (Cate Blanchett in “Tár,” Colin Farrell in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Evan Peters in “Dahmer,” Quinta Brunson in “Abbott Elementary”) and some mild surprises that weren’t really surprising.

After all, Brendan Fraser might be the Oscar favorite for “The Whale” over Austin Butler for “Elvis,” but Fraser said as soon as he was nominated that he wouldn’t attend the Globes after accusing a former HFPA president of sexual misconduct. And maybe “Everything Everywhere All at Once” went into the night a slight favorite over “The Banshees of Inisherin” in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category, but “Banshees” was always a strong contender in a tight race, so its win was the furthest thing from a shock.

Yes, “Argentina, 1985” wasn’t expected to beat “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “RRR” and “Decision to Leave” in the international category, but it’s hardly monumental when the biggest surprise comes in a category like that.

If the voters were trying to send a message, you could say it came in the first 90 minutes of the show, when nearly every acting prize went to a person of color – though it would be a disservice to deserving winners like Brunson and Tyler James Williams, Yeoh and Quan, Angela Bassett and Zendaya to suggest that they were part of an HFPA scheme to make the winners as diverse as possible. Still, by the halfway point in the show, they’d already topped all previous Globes shows by giving six awards to actors of color, four Black and two Asian.

The Globes’ results never really influence Oscar voters, whose nomination balloting begins on Thursday. But Globe speeches sometimes play as out-of-town tryouts for Oscar speeches to come – and if that’s the case, Steven Spielberg made a good case for “The Fabelmans,” Ke Huy Quan carried on the momentum he already had for “Everything Everywhere” and Angela Bassett might have gotten a little boost for her supporting role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

At the end of the night, Helen Hoehne took to the stage to say how grateful the HPFA was “to have the support of the industry” and to promise that they’ll continue to become more diverse. By that point, though, the crowd seemed to be chatting amongst themselves and barely paying attention to anything on the stage, so it’s hard to feel as if the message was really delivered.

Or maybe it was just that those opening remarks from Jerrod Carmichael still hung in the air, daring the HFPA to find a way to move on.

A little roast to go with that win. Kevin Costner won a 2023 best actor Golden Globe for his role in Yellowstone, but presenter Regina Hall couldn’t help but poke fun at his current situation.

Minutes before the 80th annual awards show began on Tuesday, January 10, the Field of Dreams star, 67, shared a poignant video via Instagram in which he explained the reason he couldn’t attend. Costner — who was standing on a palm-tree covered cliff overlooking the ocean — noted that he and his wife, Christine Baumgartner, were stuck in Santa Barbara due to the severe California floods.

“Nobody’s sadder than us that we can’t be there at the Golden Globes,” the Bodyguard actor shared, adding that he and Baumgartner, 48, even had to “pull the kids out of school” due to the devastation. (The couple share three kids; Costner is also dad to four adult children from two previous relationships.)

After announcing Costner’s win for best actor in a drama series at the Beverly Hilton, Hall, 52, began reading off the teleprompter — and laughing and rolling her eyes at what was written.

“Kevin Costner, he so much wanted to be — ,” she started before cracking up. She then addressed the audience, saying, “I always like how they write this. It’s like, ‘He so much wanted to be — ’ no, I’m sure he did,” she cracked.

“But because of the — it’s been raining — the unprecedented weather and flooding, he has to shelter in place in Santa Barbara,” the Girls Trip star continued, smacking her forehead and muttering, “Jesus,” as the audience roared.

“No, this is a sad story right now. He’s stuck in Santa Barbara. Let’s pray everyone,” Hall said, attempting to keep her composure. “Everyone, we do, we pray and we hope everyone affected by these storms remains safe. I’m gonna set that award right there, on your behalf, Kevin.”

For their part, Costner revealed in the Instagram video that he and Baumgartner were going to be celebrating at home. “She went out and bought me some gold and yellow and black and silver balloons, and so we’re gonna [watch] the television and see what happens,” the Oscar winner said in the somber address, apologizing for his absence.

“I’m really sorry to the Golden Globes and the international press,” he stated. “I hope we’re invited back. Thanks.”

Costner’s 2023 Golden Globe marks his third win and sixth nomination. He previously won a best actor statuette in 2013 for the Hatfields & McCoys as well as a best director award for his iconic 1990 film Dances With Wolves.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare

Cast: Konkona Sensharma, Bhumi Pednekar, Aamir Bashir, Vikrant Massey, Amol Parashar, Karan Kundra

Director: Alankrita Shrivastava

There is a nostalgic feel to the title of director Alankrita Shrivastava’s (Lipstick Under My Burkha, Made In Heaven) new Netflix film Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare. It gives a sense of those times when moving to big cities was the only way to survive and live a comparatively dignified life, especially in the Hindi heartland. It reminds you of many fantastic stories in contemporary Hindi literature. There is a distinct touch that takes us back to an era where upward economic mobility made much more sense for the middle class. In short, full marks to the title for evoking just the right emotions.

Mrs Yadav aka Dolly (Konkona Sensharma) is a street-smart working woman who is battling on many fronts with a smiling face, but her prejudices and biases keep blowing her tough cover. But there is this understanding between Shrivastava and Sensharma that you can’t pinpoint this as Mrs Yadav’s flaw. She is conflicted, aspirational and yet so understanding.

She gives a very ‘keeper’ vibe but there is something about her personality that keeps hinting towards her feisty character, it’s probably something that propels her towards a more just environment. Otherwise too, if Sensharma plays a docile character, we mostly know that there is a strategic silence to it and she will explode when the moment comes. What a pivot for a story that needed its lead to proceed with a certain glint in her eyes!

We are introduced to Mrs Yadav when her cousin Kitty (Bhumi Pednekar) arrives at her house in Noida from Darbhanga, Bihar, in search of a better life. She is vocal and spirited in the way only small town girls can be. Those who are born with nothing but aim for the sky. No might can push them into oblivion. They always work their way around obstacles. Pednekar’s baggage has helped her in projecting the right image. Also, she is very restrained and gives ample space to co-actors even during the intense scenes, and that brings forth her development as an actor. A worthy companion for Sensharma.

Then there are typical male characters found in Shrivastava’s projects who would flip into a darker world despite their innocent faces. It’s hard to imagine a sweet-faced Vikrant Massey in such grey space!

In between, the director slips in her politics too, but to be honest, that looks forceful and hampers the flow of an otherwise very pointed narrative. It probably would have worked better if it was only about Dolly and Kitty without much of political intrusion. It might have looked better on paper, but on screen, it’s an obstacle that makes the film look like two separate stories packed into one.

However, in tone and texture, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare has hit the right spots. Its intention of being a working class heroines’ story is quite apparent and has nice dimensions too, but there are way too many sub-plots going on for a 124-minute film.

If we don’t get into nitpicking then Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare is a suitable film giving a good overlook of the present feminism debates.

Before I finish, a shout-out to Aamir Bashir, whose special treatment of an ordinary character has once again won me over.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, made a virtual appearance during the Golden Globes telecast Tuesday evening.

Zelenskyy was introduced by actor-director Sean Penn, best known for his Academy Award-winning performances in 2003’s “Mystic River” and 2008’s “Milk.” The “Gaslit” star met with Zelenskyy in Kyiv this past November to express his support for the war-torn country, where he had been filming a documentary for Vice Studios earlier in the year.

“From the other-worldly courage of young Iranians rising up,” Penn said to the crowd. “To the ever persevering women’s movement of Afghanistan. We are reminded, in no uncertain terms, that the freedom to dream is not simply a human luxury but rather a human need that must be fought and sacrificed for. If the freedom to dream were a spear, I proudly present a human being who tonight represents that spear’s most honed tip.”

Zelenskyy then addressed the audience via recorded message recalling the start of the Golden Globes in the 1944. “The second World War wasn’t over yet, but the tide was turned, all knew who would win. There were still battles and tears ahead, it was then when the Golden Globes awards appeared to honor the best performers of 1943,” Zelenkyy said. “It is now 2023 the war in Ukraine is not over yet but the tide is turning. And it is already clear who will win. There are still battles and tears ahead, but now I can definitely tell you who are the best in the previous year, it was you. The free people of the free world. Those who united around the support of the free Ukrainian people in our common struggle for freedom.”

The audience cheered when President Zelenskyy announced his projected victory.

“There will be no third World War, it is not a trilogy,” Zelenkyy continued. “Ukraine will stop the Russian aggression on our land.”

As a gift, Penn had given Zelenskyy one of his Oscar trophies in an exchange that was shared on Twitter by Anton Gerashchenko, the advisor to the minister of internal affairs of Ukraine. In return, Penn received an Order of Merit honoring his passionate solidarity with Ukraine.

Previously, Penn had threatened to “smelt” his Oscar statuettes if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences neglected to offer Zelenskyy air-time on last year’s telecast of the Academy Awards.

Zelenskyy’s Golden Globes appearance comes one week after the White House committed to sending $3.75 billion in military aid to Ukraine and adjacent NATO countries — the largest assistance package to date from the U.S. amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“The war in Ukraine is at a critical point right now, and we have to do everything we can to help the Ukrainians continue to resist Russian aggression,” Laura Cooper, deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, said in a press release from the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman details why The Sandman will remain safe at Netflix, though he is doing it in the funniest way possible.

Showrunner Neil Gaiman makes it clear that The Sandman is safe from potential cuts at Netflix. The hit comic book adaptation saw Dream (Tom Sturridge) desperately working to recover after being held captive for years, during which time his own personal realm falls apart. The Sandman became an instant hit, which led to the show’s season 2 renewal in November 2022. While it is a massive Netflix success, numerous shows have received approval and have still been canceled without warning, leaving The Sandman‘s future in limbo.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

One Tumblr user asked the creator whether the comic book show was actually safe, referring to Inside Job as an example where its season renewal was reverted and got canceled. Since The Sandman was renewed at Netflix, Gaiman responded on Tumblr to assure that The Sandman will be safe from any serious cuts at Netflix. Gaiman’s answer is enough to reassure that the production will be safe, using exaggerated circumstances to make a point. Here is Gaiman’s full response below:

Define “safe.” Netflix could go out of business before more Sandman launches. A new, nightmarish pestilence could close the world down completely. The actors could all be eaten by weasels and the show would be shuttered. But if there’s a Netflix and nothing unforeseen and tragic happens to close the world or the show down, then there will be more Sandman.

What’s Happening At Netflix?

Corinthian talks to a fan at a restaurant in The Sandman

The Sandman took so long to make because its difficult production required a wide scope, a large VFX budget, and several attempts to get a format right. With a production timeline that began decades ago, The Sandman needed to find a distributor with patience, especially if it wanted to add more episodes. Unfortunately, it landed at a time when the streaming industry is canceling shows on a whim. The Warner Bros. and Discovery merger led to many HBO Max removals, and AMC and Netflix have not been far behind in ending shows. In the first two weeks of 2023, Netflix already canceled 1899 and Inside Job, even though the latter was already renewed for season 2.

For the expensive, The Sandman, which took three months and a fan-led campaign to earn a renewal, concerns for a potential cancelation had spiked. Netflix has been criticized for their cancelations, where most series get terminated after two or three seasons, and barely many make it with four seasons. Unless these shows had world-shattering numbers of Wednesday, Stranger Things, or even The Sandman, most were bound to get the boot. With a business model devoted to massive successes, any faltering from The Sandman could result in devastation, which makes the show’s status nerve-wracking.

Everything We Know About The Sandman’s New Episodes

Death and Dream Walking in The Sandman

The Sandman‘s new episodes are set to revolve around The Season of Mists, a storyline from the comics that sees Lucifer release all the souls from Hell. With Dream working to resolve the turmoil on Earth, the show will have ample opportunity to explore Dream’s relationship with his siblings and introduce new characters. There is no confirmation on how many The Sandman episodes will come with this renewal, but Gaiman is very involved, as he gives updates about The Sandman‘s script process. With Gaiman involved, the show will likely remain close to its source material, which would mean that the new The Sandman episodes will have a massive scope.

Rep. Katie Porter, a three-term congresswoman from Orange County, announced Tuesday she is running for the seat currently held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

Although Porter, 48, is the first to enter the race for Feinstein’s seat, she will face a crowded field of heavily funded candidates if Feinstein, 89, decides not to run.

“Most of us believe Feinstein will not be a candidate,” said veteran Democratic political consultant Rick Taylor. “Katie’s real competitor already has $30 million in the bank. I’m talking about Rep. Adam Schiff.”

At the moment, Porter is best known to the general public for being the House member seen on camera reading the book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” during the 15 rounds of votes to decide Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s speakership bid.

Harvard-educated Porter, serving Orange County’s 45th district, which includes Irvine, Tustin and Lake Fores, likely will face a number of other women candidates, Taylor said.

Another competitor includes Rep. Barbara Lee, an ally of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass. Lee represents California’s 12th congressional district, which includes parts of San Francisco.

“One thing is certain,” Taylor said. “All the candidates will be progressive.”

Although Feinstein has not said if she will seek a sixth term, political insiders widely believe that she will retire from the Senate, where she has served since 1992. In recent years, Washington observers have expressed concern that Feinstein was struggling at times with cognitive issues.

Porter announced her campaign Tuesday on Twitter.

“California needs a warrior in the Senate – to stand up to special interests, fight the dangerous imbalance in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy.”

In her campaign video, Porter promises to get tough on congressional corruption.

“We are living in a time of extraordinary change,” she said. “Change can be electrifying and exhilarating. But change can also be disruptive and disorienting, like the constant assault on our democracy… They used to call the US Senate the world’s greatest deliberative body. Well, if that were ever true to begin with, that has changed too.”

She said the “threat from so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell has too often made the U.S. Senate the place were rights get revoked, special interest get rewarded and our democracy gets rigged.”

“As Californians we’ve proven we won’t just sit by and let these things happen. You always do your part and I will continue to do mine.”

“That goes for taking on Wall Street and the big banks, big oil and big pharma,” she said. “It’s why I refuse to accept corporate PAC and lobbyist campaign money – I don’t want it.”

Thanks to the popularity of social media platforms and digital stores, animated videos have become the perfect medium to generate interest while getting your message across. They help you break down complex ideas into digestible pieces of information and generate interest in the story your brand wants to share — not only in terms of products and services but also in terms of content and brand narrative.

However, not all animated explainers are created equal. As effective as the style has proven to be,  there are a handful of crucial elements that define how well your audience responds to these videos and how effective they turn out in the end.

In this piece, we will take a closer look at some of those elements and give you insight into improving your explainers in these five key areas.

Let’s jump right in!

1 – Structure Your Script Accordingly

Once you have chosen to make an explainer video, you need to start by creating the script that will guide the rest of your production process.

The most classic script structure for an effective explainer consists of 3 sections or acts. Act I, where you introduce the problem or pain point you are setting up to resolve. Act II, where you introduce your solution to that problem. Then finally, Act III, where you tie that solution to your brand and prompt viewers to take action.

And all of it should take no more than 150 to 300 words on average.

While it might sound simple, it is a formula that has been proven to work really well for more than a decade, and you’ll do well to master it before trying to change it.

Beyond structure, you’ll also want to write in a conversational tone that mirrors your audience’s style. You have to write your video’s script in the way you want the protagonists to speak to your viewers. If possible, avoid complex elements like compound sentences, technical jargon, and any info that isn’t essential to get your message across.

2 – Deliver The Correct Message

The average length of a good explainer usually sits between 90 and 120 seconds. If this type of video lasts longer than that, it can drive the audience to lose interest, even if the content is attractive.

When creating a video explainer, your core message must be accessible as soon as possible and be conveyed in a simple, short, and easy-to-follow way. That means you only have a short while to get your point across, so you have no time to waste.

Regardless of the specifics of your niche and what you want to show, this type of content works because they go straight to the point! So, to help you make the most of this limited runtime, remember that your video communicates with more than the words in your script.

Think about the specific purpose you are making your explainer video for. Once you put that core idea on paper (through your script), think about other elements that can help you convey information without relying on words alone.

For example, introducing a character that looks and behaves like your audience in a typical situation that conveys a common scenario, the problem itself, and then the final resolution using visual elements (like the setting for your video) and using sound cues to place emphasis on key information.

3 – Use Engaging Stories to Keep People Hooked

One of the core reasons behind explainer videos’ effectiveness is how the style leverages storytelling. Understandably, this is also why the most experienced explainer studios enhance their explainers through narratives their viewers can easily relate to

The practice itself has been going on for well over a decade for this type of content. Yes, you want to tell something important to your viewers, but that something will only stay with them if your video brings up emotions while telling a story they’ll remember.

The specifics of what makes an engaging story will vary depending on who you are making the video for. However, the secret ingredient for explainers is working around characters and situations that your viewers can immediately recognize as their own.

If your video starts with a person that looks, talks, and behaves like your audience, you’ll have an easier time capturing your viewers’ attention. If your video tells a story viewers can see themselves going through or experiencing, they will remember it long after watching.

4 – Showcase The Value Of Your Brand  (But Do It Right!)

A good explainer conveys your message to the viewer. A great explainer does that while also getting people to know your brand and generating awareness around your products and services benefits.

However, you need to be smart about how you go about it!

One of the key benefits of the explainer formula lies precisely in how they let you subtly promote your brand or product without coming across as a straight-up advertising piece.

While the viewer’s attention is mostly placed on the story and message that you want to get across, use other branding elements to flavor your explainer and make it feel unmistakably yours.

There are plenty of ways to go about it, but we’ve found that placing your logo in the lower right corner, using your company’s color palette to inform the visual style of the piece, and using jingles and background music at key moments (like, when presenting your solution!) are all great ways to effectively brand your explainer video without turning it into an ad.

5 – Choose the Framework That Suits Your Piece

That is to say that, depending on the goal of your video, you will address the subject differently.

For instance, if you aim to help people to understand some topic, you will highlight the features and the most important aspects to get people to learn the basics. But, if you want to explain how and why your services are the best option in the market, you will use your video’s narrative to highlight all the benefits and positive effects of its use.

  • Say you are making an explainer to get people familiar with your brand of sponges through social media channels. The same video can look very different if you are trying to produce content for customer delight than if you are trying to promote the product and generate a sale.

The former will most likely revolve around showing how to use the product to the fullest. Providing tips and techniques to wash more dishes efficiently, that sort of thing. The latter will most likely revolve around communicating why that particular kitchen sponge is the best option around: it cleans faster, is softer than the competition, etc.

Even if both outcomes are about the same object, people tend to make different choices based on how the message is framed. So, always make sure the way you frame your explainer fits the objectives you are pursuing with it in the first place!

Parting Thoughts

Overall, animation videos are a growing trend for a reason. They can have a massive impact on any outreach strategy, turning things in your favor and boosting your brand’s reach, but that’s only the case if you customize the formula to suit your needs and your audience’s preferences.

Hopefully, by polishing and tweaking the elements we’ve discussed today, you’ll be far better equipped to make the most out of the explainer formula and start making explainers your audience will respond to!

The Golden Globe Awards are accolades bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association starting in January 1944, recognizing excellence in both American and international film and television. Beginning in 2022, there are 105 members of the HFPA.

The first awards presentation for distinguished achievements in the film industry granted by Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association – the precursor of today’s Hollywood Foreign Press Association – took place in early 1944 with an informal ceremony at 20th Century Fox. There, Jennifer Jones was awarded Best Actress honors for The Song of Bernadette, which also won for Best Film, while Paul Lukas took home Best Actor laurels for Watch on the Rhine. Awards were presented in the form of scrolls.

The following year, the members of the association held a contest to find a design for a statuette that would best represent the overall aims of the organization. Marina Cisternas, president of the group in 1945-46, presented the idea of a shiny globe on a cylindrical pedestal, to represent the world.

In conjunction with the Golden Globes presentation, the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association held its first gala social event in 1945 with a formal banquet at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Going My Way won for Best Picture, while Ingrid Bergman and Alexander Knox were named Best Actress and Best Actor for their performances in The Bells of St. Mary and President Wilson, respectively.

There have been other important landmarks in the history of the Golden Globes. In 1951 the association decided to divide the best film, actor and actress nominees into two categories — drama, and musical or comedy — so that no genre would be slighted. In 1952, the HFPA created the Cecil B. deMille Award to recognize “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field.” The award’s first recipient was deMille himself.

The City of Kelowna is seeking public input on how Glenmore Recreation Park should be updated.

After years of planning, the park was opened in June 2021, with phases one through three taking place. Those phases included two sports fields, a dog park, a cricket pitch, a parking lot and a stormwater detention pond.

“Those phases completed approximately half the park,” the city said on Tuesday.

“The remaining work includes an artificial turf field, sport courts, restoration of the Agricultural Land Reserve buffer, a splash park, playground and other community park amenities.”

The public will have a say on how that work should proceed, said the city.

“The Glenmore valley is a vibrant and dynamic neighbourhood, but as it does not yet have a community park, Glenmore Recreation Park will play a critical role,” said city park and landscape planner Melanie Steppuhn.

“As both a community-level and recreation-level park, it will accommodate active sports and events, as well as community and wellness-based recreation to complement the existing park system, including other community recreation parks in Rutland, Mission and Parkinson Recreation Park.”

The city says the design should be completed this year, following public engagement, and that construction is planned for 2024.

Two virtual workshops are planned, along with an online survey. The workshops will take place on Jan. 25 and Jan. 26, both from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Tennis may just have a problem on its hands.

Even very casual observers of tennis, over the past decade-plus, must have been ambiently aware of a certain set of facts: The dominance of Serena Williams on the women’s side, and of the triumvirate of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal among the men. With Williams and Federer now retired, and Djokovic and Nadal likely deep into the second half of their respective careers, a star-driven sport finds itself rapidly losing the figures who’d consumed all the oxygen for years.

That gives “Break Point” an opportunity. Netflix’s pleasingly watchable sports serial, from the same producing team behind “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” introduces a series of ultimately rootable figures who are relatively early in their careers. Die-hards and even regular tennis viewers may find it rudimentary — at one point, for instance, the basic rules of the game are explained to us — but those seeking a primer on who lies ahead and the pressures they face in trying to establish themselves would do well to check this out.

As to those challenges: One issue with the tennis media being dominated by major celebrities, after all, is their general reticence to let us deep inside their worlds. Here, aspirants with little to lose let us inside their hotel rooms, their pre-match prep, their moments of post-game exhilaration or despair. Standout figures, in the five episodes launching January 13, include Taylor Fritz, an ambitious Californian who urgently wants to win his home-state Indian Wells tournament, and Paula Badosa, a gifted Spaniard whose own hometown moment at the Madrid Open is occluded by her own mental-health struggles.

Challenges like the ones Badosa faces are presented with sensitivity and thought, bolstered by talking-head interviews with the likes of Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick, retired superstars, testifying to the pressures of the court. This much hardly seems necessary — the footage is strong enough — and, if anything, “Break Point” can operate with a touch too much sensitivity to the players’ experiences. Nick Kyrgios, a self-styled tennis “bad boy,” gets a rootably sympathetic edit of his time at the 2022 Australian Open; this all happened before charges of asault against Kyrgios by an ex-girlfriend were made public later that year, which casts his bright and ultimately upbeat “Break Point” story in a different light.

This is one episode, though (the first one, but still); in the main, “Break Point” does a good job of balancing contradictory urges — showing us people living through high-stakes single-elimination tournaments both as athletes and as people who must find ways to kill the downtime. To the former, the filmmakers here have the great good luck of making television about a sport that’s very easy to render dramatic; well-chosen shots have each player covered looking like a potential next Williams, or next Federer. And to the latter, subjects seem chosen both for their willingness to grant access and their ability to forget the presence of cameras. One player’s anger and frustration at losing practice time due to sprinkles of rain sticks in memory not as diva-ish bad behavior but as the expression of total lack of control over their circumstances.

And tennis, when played well, is all about control! Which makes such an interesting counterpoint to the ragged, baggy hours spent in hotel rooms on laptops these athletes spend, stuck once again with their doubts and insecurities. “Break Point” makes a strong case for having cameras there to capture what thoughts play out in those moments, and helped convert a onetime serious watcher who hasn’t had time for the sport since Sharapova’s heyday into someone who will be seated for this year’s grand slams. For the filmmakers behind this project, that’s game, set and match.

Pictured above: Taylor Fritz. The first five episodes of “Break Point” will launch on Netflix on Friday, Jan. 13, with five more to follow in June 2023.

Overheard, the social media brand with accounts dedicated to sharing eavesdropped conversations in locales like Los Angeles and New York, has been acquired by Doing Things Media.

The all-cash deal will see Doing Things Media — the parent company of other social brands like Recess Therapy, which was behind last summer’s viral “Corn Kid” video — expand the Overheard brand into new cities and across content, products, events, licensing, and advertising.

Overheard was created by Jesse Margolis in 2015 after he shared an absurd conversation he overheard at an Erewhon grocery store in L.A. to Instagram and was encouraged by a friend to create a separate account dedicated to such content. Since then, the brand has expanded across social platforms and includes accounts for New York, London, San Francisco and Austin, as well as two accounts focused on crowdsourced conversations taking place on university campuses and on dating apps.

“Doing Things Media represents the very best of internet culture and empowers its creators to scale and monetize in ways that wouldn’t be possible alone,” Margolis said in a statement. “Overheard has always been an extremely fun, irreverent, and profitable company, and as we look to scale the company, DTM will help get us where we want to be by helping extend the brand across new categories and revenue streams.”

With Doing Things Media, which secured a $21.5 million Series A funding round last year, Overheard will join a portfolio of social and meme accounts like Animals Doing Things, Middle Class Fancy, Shitheadsteve and the aforementioned Recess Therapy.

“We’ve found success building niche communities,” Doing Things Media CEO and co-founder Reid Hailey said. “Overheard fits seamlessly into our portfolio, allowing us to expand into new content verticals while providing the Overheard brand with the infrastructure required to rapidly scale with new opportunities on and off social media.”

We’re getting a look at Pamela, a love story, in the first trailer for the upcoming Netflix documentary about the life and career of Pamela Anderson.

Described by Netflix as “an intimate and humanizing portrait of one of the world’s most famous blonde bombshells, Pamela, a love story follows the trajectory of Pamela Anderson’s life and career from small town girl to international sex symbol, actress, activist and doting mother.”

In the trailer, Anderson reveals her thoughts about the infamous sex tape with first husband, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee, that was stolen and distributed on the internet.

“I blocked that stolen tape out of my life in order to survive, and now that it’s all coming up again, I feel sick,” Anderson says in the clip, released Tuesday.

The sex tape scandal was back in the spotlight recently via the Hulu series Pam & Tommy, in which she was portrayed by Lily James. It tells the story of her whirlwind romance with Lee, and the chaos that unfolded in their lives in the 1990s when their unauthorized sex tape was made public.

“I want to take control of the narrative for the first time,” she says in the documentary.

“I put myself in crazy situations and I survived them.”

The trailer concludes with her asking “Why can’t we be the heroes of our own life story?” and then she quips, “Why don’t I do all the interviews naked? There’s no mystery here.”

The documentary is directed by Ryan White and produced by Jessica Hargrave, Julia Nottingham & Brandon Thomas Lee.

Pamela, a love story premieres January 31 on Netflix.

Halle Bailey is vacationing in style. On Jan. 9, the singer and “Little Mermaid” star shared Instagram photos of herself posing in a hanging chair wearing a pink bikini. “Somewhere swinging,” she captioned the effortless pictures, which were snapped in an undisclosed tropical location. Bailey’s bubblegum-colored two-piece from LSpace featured metallic chain straps for an added touch of glamour. She paired the suit with black studded flip-flops and showed off the full length of her hip-grazing locs.

Bailey told POPSUGAR in 2022 that she was inspired by her sister Chloe’s “comfortable, cozy, and flattering” style. “I find that as I’m getting older — I’m 22 now — I’m trying to figure out how to do the same kind of thing,” she said. “I look up to her in that way. She’s my style inspiration. Because comfort is key, but you still want to look sexy. It’s just finding that balance.”

Much like this new year, Bailey kicked off 2022 with a stylish vacation post featuring an equally sexy thongkini. In the year that followed, she got into the cutout trend with her Georges Hobeika gown at the fifth annual Wearable Art Gala, her plunging corset and hip-cutout set at the BET Awards, and a cropped sweater for date nights with her boyfriend, DDG.

If Bailey is your style inspiration, shop similar bikinis (and the exact one she’s wearing) ahead.

RRR, the SS Rajamouli magnum opus starring NTR Jr and Ram Charan, has taken Los Angeles by storm. So much so that even Hollywood bigwigs are raving about the film, which has been shortlisted for the Oscars 2023 by The Academy. While the former will be the big prize for Indian cinema, it’s the Globes where the awards season action begins on Wednesday. Rajamouli, NTR Jr and Ram Charan will be present at the grand ceremony where the film has been nominated in two categories – best picture-non English and best original song–motion picture, taking place on January 11.

But how did it all happen? Let’s go back to last March when the film hit the cinemas. After much delay, Rajamouli finally released the film in cinemas last March, taking viewers back to the 1920s.

The plot explores the undocumented period in Bheem (Jr NTR) and Raju’s (Ram Charan) lives when both the revolutionaries chose to go into obscurity before they began the fight for their country.

Having carried the expectations he set with Baahubali and Baahubali 2 since RRR was announced, Rajamouli not only lived up but exceeded it with RRR. It came as no surprise that the film eventually emerged as a blockbuster with every state dancing to Naatu Naatu. Like most movies, the craze for RRR appeared to be dying down a few months after its release.

But the biggest push was yet to come. It was when the film hit the digital streaming platform that RRR blew bigger than expected. Audiences in the West began watching and the fire set in India began spreading like wildfire in the West.

Earlier, Hollywood director Daniel Kwan praised RRR and Tweeted, “After a busy year of work and travelling I’ve finally checked a couple things off my list 1) finished my taxes (I know the irony) and 2) watched RRR. HOLY COW ya’ll weren’t kidding. Anytime I watch an Indian action film I feel like I’m working in the wrong country.”

John Krasinski, best known for his work in The Office and Jack Ryan, also praise for the film and said, “Is it RRR? Oh my God, I heard it’s unbelievable. I’ve been wanting to see (it, but) I haven’t been able to see anything. I was just directing a movie, but I can’t wait to see it.” Prior to this, The Vampire Diaries fame Joseph Morgan also called RRR an ‘absolute masterpiece’ and Tweeted, “Had a bit of time off shooting and Persia White and I watched two incredible movies. ‘RRR’ and ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ Both were astounding. We laughed and cried and gasped in amazement. Just stunning cinema.”

The international recognition pushed Rajamouli and team to begin their campaign for RRR at the Oscars. While fans hoped that RRR would be the official submission from India for the Oscars, they were heartbroken by the turn of events. However, the makers were not going to give up. Instead, they opted to approach the Academy directly and submitted the film ‘For Your Consideration’ in October.

As the Oscar rally began, RRR began bagging other international nominations — including the prestigious Golden Globe Awards 2023. When the Golden Globe Awards nominations were announced, the RRR erupted with joy.

SS Rajamouli tweeted, “Thanks to the jury at @goldenglobes for nominating #RRRMovie in two categories. Congratulations to the entire team. Thanks to all the fans and audience for your unconditional love and support throughout (sic).”

Jr NTR tweeted, “Delighted that #RRRMovie has been nominated in two categories at the Golden Globe Awards! Congratulations to all of us. Looking forward (sic).”

The Golden Globe nomination only strengthen RRR’s case at the Oscars. Adding cherries to the cake were fan reactions in Japan, US and other countries where the film hit theatres. The final sugar dusting on the cake came in the form of producer Jason Blum, the founder of Hollywood studio Blumhouse which has produced Oscar-nominated movie ‘Get Out’ and horror movies such as ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Insidious,’ is sure that Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR will be feted with the Best Film honour at this year’s Oscars. He tweeted, “I’m going with RRR winning best pic. You heard it here first. Mark it down, please.” “If I’m right, I am awarding myself my own Oscar,” he added.

Last March, seated in a packed theatre watching RRR, I joined the crowd break into loud cheers and danced along with Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s Naatu Naatu. The energy was contagious and the experience was nothing less than a festival. However, if someone had then told me that the crowd from across the globe would not only be dancing along with the song but also rallying for it to win some of the biggest awards, I would have sat in disbelief. And yet, here we are, with fingers crossed for RRR to win a Golden Globe on January 11.

RRR, the SS Rajamouli magnum opus starring

The dealmaking process for the Daniels’ film turned into an impromptu “Goonies” reunion.

One of the great feel-good stories of 2022 is Ke Huy Quan’s return to acting. After emerging as a child star in the 1980s with his performances in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “The Goonies,” the actor has spent the past decades out of the spotlight, often working behind the scenes on Hong Kong action films. His comeback performance in the Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has made him a frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, as he has won the equivalent prize at virtually every early award show this season.

In a new appearance in The Hollywood Reporter’s Actor Roundtable, Quan reflected on the unlikely set of circumstances that led to him getting the “Everything Everywhere” script right after deciding that a return to acting was worth pursuing.

“It was at the same time that I called up an agent friend of mine,” Quan said. “I didn’t have an agent for decades, so I was practically begging him to represent me, and he said yes. Two weeks later, I got a call about this script, and an audition. The Daniels were gracious enough to send the script over so I could prepare, and I read it and was blown away. I was so hungry for a script like this, for a role like this. I remember reading it until 5 a.m., and in my head I had all these ideas of what I wanted to do with this role.”

Quan continued, “I was looking out the window, the sun was rising, and I said, ‘I have to go to sleep,’ because my audition was in the afternoon. It had been more than 25 years since I’d auditioned — I was so nervous, I was shaking. The Daniels were so sweet. Sarah Finn, the casting director, was amazing. And then I didn’t hear from them for two months. I was miserable because I wanted this role so bad. Finally, I went to audition for a second time, and then that phone call came. I was screaming so loud. I was jumping up so high. And to this day, I still cannot believe how everything came to be.”

Once he had the part, he turned to an unlikely source to negotiate his contract. He ended up being represented by Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk in “The Goonies” before establishing himself as a lawyer, turning the negotiation into an impromptu reunion.

“Jeff Cohen, who was in ‘The Goonies’ with me — he was Chunk — is all grown now and he’s an entertainment lawyer,” he said. “When the producer of our movie was trying to make my deal, he said he never imagined that he’d have to talk to Chunk and Data for his movie.”

Number of seasons included with subscription: 2

For what is, on paper, a spy thriller, Patriot is weird—that’s high praise—as well as laugh-out-loud funny, occasionally sweet, and completely original. Michael Dorman stars as the show’s ever-in-existential-crises covert operator, and he leads a fantastic cast that includes Kurtwood Smith, Michael Chernus, Kathleen Munroe, Terry O’Quinn, Debra Winger, and Chris Conrad (the brother of show creator Steven Conrad, and maybe the show’s secret weapon). If you’re a music fan who likes the good stuff, you’re in luck: “Train Song” by Vashti Bunyan soundtracks the home-video intro in season one; there’s also a cover of a Bill Fay cut by Jeff Tweedy (like the Conrads, a Chicagoan); and the folky, Bill Callahan-esque originals Dorman’s character plays throughout the show are always amusing. Spider-Ham was one of the breakout stars of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the character is an ideal pick to lead his own spin-off film.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse told audiences that anyone could wear the mask and be Spider-Man. Audiences were introduced to a few different takes on the webhead and none was more surprising than that of Peter Porker aka Spider-Ham, voiced by John Mulaney. Created by Larry Hama, Tom DeFalco, and Mark Armstrong, Spider-Ham first appeared in the 1983 humorous one-shot Marvel Tails and went on to become a cult favorite in backup issues featuring other Marvel heroes imagined as animals.

Comic book fans had known of Spider-Ham, and the character was often treated as a fun punchline in video games like Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, but also with a fondness as seen in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man. The character’s appearance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced Spider-Ham to a wider audience and made him more popular than he had ever been before thanks to a combination of great writing and Mulaney’s vocal performance.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Many people now want to see a Spider-Ham movie. Could this character, which in many ways is just one giant extended joke, carry a movie? Despite Spider-Ham having largely been an excuse for silly puns, it could actually work, and would probably even be one of the Sony Spider-Man spin-offs that makes the most sense.

Anthropomorphic Animals Tend to be Big Animated Hits

Making an animated Spider-Ham film just seems so obvious, given animation’s rich history with anthropomorphic animals. In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Ham is designed and animated to resemble a classic Looney Tunes-style character. While the Looney Tunes themselves have had a troubled box office track record, using that style of animation to inform an entire animated movie with a character audiences have already met might be a way to revive that style of animation. Sony already tested the waters with a Spider-Ham short film on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Blu-ray, which was a good indicator of what a full Spider-Ham movie could be.

Walt Disney animation has had great success with animated films based on fully animal worlds, from 1971’s Robin Hood to the recent 2016’s Zootopia. The Spider-Ham storyline has a colorful supporting cast that would lend well to a feature film including the villain Pig King (his version of the Kingpin) and Raven the Hunter. Paired with the right voice actors, this could make an entirely new corner of the Spider-Man franchise to be explored for years in Spider-Ham sequels. One imagines a feature film focused solely on Spider-Ham and his colorful world full of animal friends and enemies would be a must-see film for any kid.

Spider-Verse Proved it Could Work

Spider-Ham May Get His Own Into the Spider-Verse Spin-Off Movie
Sony Pictures

While a beloved movie that’s now considered one of the greatest superhero movies ever made, when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was first announced, many were hesitant about how an animated Spider-Man movie could distinguish itself from the live-action franchise. Yet the movie won over audiences, showcasing exactly how unique animation was as a medium to tell this story and introducing a side of the Spider-Man world that live-action movies never could.

For as odd as Spider-Ham sounds as a concept, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse showed that the concept can work because audiences responded very positively to him. While it is tricky to take a fun supporting character and make them the lead of a movie (and cinema is filled with failed attempts, from Matter as the lead in Cars 2 or Russell Brand’s Aldis Snow getting upgraded to lead role in Get Him to the Greek), in the right hands a Spider-Ham movie could work. It might not be the moving dramas or exciting spectacles that other Spider-Man movies have been, but it could be a more silly, self-referential comedy that the genre hasn’t had since the first Deadpool.

Spider-Ham Wouldn’t be the Weirdest Spider-Man Spin-Off Sony Is Making

Madame Web and Spider-Man
Sony Pictures

If Sony were to announce an animated Spider-Ham movie, it would not even be the strangest Spider-Man character for them to announce as the lead of their own film. While Venom was an obvious character given his popularity, the studio’s decision to make a movie based on Morbius was always a confusing one that resulted in a box office bomb. The studio is also developing a movie based on Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter, who is now positioned as an antihero. Additionally, Madame Web, a supporting Spider-Man character typically portrayed as a blind elderly woman, will now be reimagined with Dakota Johnson stepping into the lead role.

The studio has also cast rapper Bad Bunny to star as El Muerto, a Spider-Man villain that has only ever appeared in two Spider-Man comics. Recently, it was announced that Donald Glover will produce and star in a movie based on the Spider-Man villain Hypno-Hustler, a character who hypnotizes people with his guitar. Sony is scraping the bottom of the barrel of the Spider-Man brand to make films out of. At this rate, a Spider-Ham movie would seem like the safe bet for the studio and one that fans likely want to see more than El Muerto or Hypno-Hustler.

When MGM’s Singin’ in the Rain, Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen’s musical valentine to Hollywood’s silent film era as it transitioned into the world of talkies, opened in the spring of 1952, it instantly won over moviegoers. Writing in The New York Times, critic Bosley Crowther enthused, “Compounded generously of music, dance, color spectacle and a riotous abundance of Gene Kelly, Jean Hagen and Donald O’Connor on the screen, all elements in this rainbow program are carefully contrived and guaranteed to lift the dolors of winter and put you in a buttercup mood.” The movie went on to become a box office hit, ranking as the 10th highest-grossing film of the year in North America. The Writers Guild awarded Betty Comden and Adolph Green its prize for best-written American musical. The Directors Guild nominated Kelly and Donen for outstanding direction. And the Golden Globe Awards nominated it as best comedy or musical.

But the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences wasn’t as impressed, giving the movie a relative cold shoulder. It granted the film just two noms — a supporting actress nomination for Hagen, who plays the petulant and petty silent film star with a voice that grates, and a nom for best scoring of a motion picture — neither of which it won. (For the record, that year’s best picture winner was Cecil B. DeMille’s The Greatest Show on Earth, now universally considered one of the worst best picture winners ever, although it does figure in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans as the movie that first inspired the nascent filmmaker.)

The Academy has certainly changed in 70 years, but, still, Singin’ in the Rain‘s failure to impress the old Academy doesn’t bode well for Damien Chazelle’s Babylon‘s chances with the new Academy, given that the new film revisits the same time period, Hollywood’s fraught and frenzied transition to talkies and, along the way, references Singin’ — both directly and indirectly.

From left: Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor in Singin’ in the Rain, which Kelly co-directed with Stanley Donen.

From its very first screenings, the three-hour-plus Babylon earned the descriptor “divisive,” which is just a polite way of saying that for everyone who enjoyed the film, there were lots more who enjoyed dumping on it. Critics were definitely mixed, with Babylon scoring a middling 55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a barely better 60 on Metacritic. The New York Times‘ Manohla Dargis dismissed the film as “a bloated folly,” while the Los Angeles Times‘ Justin Chang was more appreciative of what he described as “a wild and pungent cinematic bacchanal.” Audiences were underwhelmed; it received a C+ CinemaScore rating.

If any further punctuation was needed, Babylon opened to a resounding belly flop at the box office. The $80 million Paramount release pulled in just $4.9 million over the four-day Christmas weekend from 3,343 theaters.

That would seem to seal Babylon‘s fate, sinking its awards hopes. For while the Academy doesn’t penalize small-scale films for failing to sell tickets, it tends to look askance at big-budget movies that play to empty theaters. But fortunately for Babylon, before its box office epitaph was written, several critics and awards groups weighed in, lending support for the film.

When the Golden Globe nominations were unveiled Dec. 12, Babylon picked up a solid five nods. It did game the system a bit by competing in the comedy or musical category — while the film has some bitter laughs and almost nonstop music, its closing moments are much closer to elegiac drama. But working the comedy side of the ledger, it picked up noms for best picture, actress Margot Robbie and actor Diego Calva, along with a nom for Brad Pitt as supporting actor and another for score.

Two days later, when the Critics Choice Awards nominees — which can be quite predictive of Oscar noms — were revealed, Babylon, tying with The Banshees of Inisherin, collected nine noms. (Only Everything Everywhere All at Once, with 14, and The Fabelmans, with 11, did better.) In addition to best picture, directing and actress, it collected six crafts nominations. Its strength in the crafts categories — which could help boost it into the best picture Oscar circle — was further underlined when the Oscar shortlists were released Dec. 21, and Babylon earned spots for makeup and hairstyling, score and sound.

So, even though Babylon might be headed to box office oblivion, attention will be paid. In fact, it’s shaping up as one of the season’s most hotly debated awards hopefuls. “Babylon is truly terrible. The most obnoxious film in years,” Kim Jorgensen, the founder of Landmark Theatres, damned the movie in a Facebook post. But in another Facebook entry, film historian Joseph McBride wrote, “I saw Babylon last night and love it. Such a sad movie about the tragic decline and fall of a great film industry and the art form it helped create.”

That kind of heated argument may mean an Oscar is out of reach for Babylon, but it doesn’t preclude a bunch of nominations — probably more than the two Singin’ in the Rain achieved, which would lend itself to a certain irony.

When MGM’s Singin’ in the Rain, Gene

How much do we really know the past? History is never as straightforward as what we see from the likes of Ken Burns or the BBC. In Jean Cárdenas’ Memories in Silhouettes, the past consists of a series of anecdotes taken from the journal of the recently deceased grandfather of Mateo Hernandez (Diego Giraldo). His grandfather was an enigmatic man, seemingly involved in a multitude of events in the layered history of Colombia, including the infamous Age of Heroes, an age where “fantasies are made true.” The journal is a veritable goldmine of historical details – even if it’s not as grounded in reality as we’re led to believe from the start.

Herein lies the focus of Cárdenas’ mysterious short film. While initially set up to be a factual retelling of events lifted from the diary of Mateo’s grandfather, it quickly becomes apparent that this isn’t quite what one would read about in history texts. It’s an enjoyable conceit, and the filmmaker clearly has fun with the idea. Cárdenas crafts a fun history, like a band of rebels supporting the poor in the vein of Robin Hood. There’s also the sleek and sexy Silueta, a famous outcast known for leaving notes in the wake of her actions.

“…a band of rebels supporting the poor in the vein of Robin Hood.”

The PBS aesthetic of the footage and narration is well done. The deft insertion of contemporary actors as the camera slowly pans across old photographs is seamless enough to pass as believable. But it retains enough artifice so as to prevent the loss of any tongue-in-cheek commentary on the staid nature of historical documentaries.

Memories in Silhouettes works as a funny and cogent commentary on how subjective history can truly be. The movie looks to be a building block for a promising new artist in Jean Cárdenas. Even if his CV might not be as varied as Mateo’s grandfather, here’s hoping we see more from the young filmmaker.

How much do we really know the

WASHINGTON — The global economy will come “perilously close” to a recession this year, led by weaker growth in all the world’s top economies — the United States, Europe and China — the World Bank warned Tuesday.

In an annual report, the World Bank, which lends money to poorer countries for development projects, said it had slashed its forecast for global growth this year by nearly half, to just 1.7%, from its previous projection of 3%. If that forecast proves accurate, it would be the third-weakest annual expansion in three decades, behind only the deep recessions that resulted from the 2008 global financial crisis and the pandemic in 2020.

Though the United States might avoid a recession this year — the World Bank predicts the U.S. economy will eke out growth of 0.5% — global weakness will likely pose another headwind for America’s businesses and consumers, on top of high prices and more expensive borrowing rates. The United States also remains vulnerable to further supply chain disruptions if COVID keeps surging or the war in Ukraine worsens.

And Europe, long a major exporter to China, will likely suffer from a weaker Chinese economy.

The World Bank report also noted that rising interest rates in developed economies like the United States and Europe will attract investment capital from poorer countries, thereby depriving them of crucial domestic investment. At the same time, the report said, those high interest rates will slow growth in developed countries at a time when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has kept world food prices high.

The impact of a global downturn would fall particularly hard on poorer countries in such areas as Saharan Africa, where the World Bank predicts per capita income will grow just 1.2% in 2023 and 2024. That is such a tepid pace that poverty rates could rise.

“Weakness in growth and business investment will compound the already devastating reversals in education, health, poverty, and infrastructure and the increasing demands from climate change,” said David Malpass, president of the World Bank.

The report follows a similarly gloomy forecast a week earlier from Kristina Georgieva, the head of the International Monetary Fund, the global lending agency. Georgieva estimated on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that one-third of the world will fall into recession this year.

“For most of the world economy, this is going to be a tough year, tougher than the year we leave behind,” Georgieva said. “Why? Because the three big economies — U.S., E.U., China — are all slowing down simultaneously.”

The World Bank projects that the European Union’s economy won’t grow at all next year after having expanded 3.3% in 2022. It foresees China growing 4.3%, nearly a percentage point lower than it had previously forecast, and about half the pace that Beijing posted in 2021.

The bank expects developing countries to fare better, growing 3.4% this year, the same as in 2022, though still only about half the pace of 2021. It forecasts Brazil’s growth slowing to 0.8% in 2023, down from 3% last year. In Pakistan, it expects the economy to expand just 2% this year, one-third of last year’s pace.

Other economists have also issued bleak outlooks, though most of them not quite as dire. Economists at JPMorgan are predicting slow growth this year for advanced economies and the world as a whole, but they don’t expect a global recession. Last month, the bank predicted that slowing inflation will bolster consumers’ ability to spend and power growth in the United States and elsewhere.

“The global expansion will turn into 2023 bent but not broken,” the JPMorgan report said.

Another year, another series of packed cinemas and streaming records broken for Disney+. Put aside for a moment every single other company owned by Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, 20th Century Studios etc and let’s focus on Walt Disney Animation Studios. By combining masterful artistry and groundbreaking storytelling we are introduced to the Disney original animations of today.

This year itself we will be seeing 5 new Disney original animations. 2 films and 3 new series that are pushing boundaries and breaking barriers. Here’s a look at what Disney has in store for 2023.

Elemental

They say opposites attract, and that proves to be true in Disney and Pixar’s new original film, Elemental.

The film follows the journey of an unlikely pair, Ember (Leah Lewis) and Wade (Mamoudou Athie), in a city where fire, water, land and air residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common. This film is very much a lovestory, and this will be Pixar’s third romantic Pixar movie after WALL-E, and Toy Story 4.

The film is directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Pete Docter. Elemental is scheduled to be released on June 16, 2023.

Win or Lose
Disney is taking their storytelling to another level with Win or Lose. In the only Pixar TV show on this list, we see Will Forte as Coach Dan in a new series that follows a middle school softball team in the week leading up to their championship game.

The uniqueness of this show is each episode is told from the perspective of a different character. This will be Pixar’s first original long-form series.

Written and directed by Michael Yates and Carrie Hobson. This is the first Pixar series not be based on a movie.

Iwájú

Iwájú is a Yoruba word that loosely translates to “future.” Based in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, Iwájú explores themes of class, inequality, innocence and challenging the status quo in a comic-style animated sci-fi series that explores the futuristic world through the black community. It was created and directed by Ziki Nelson and produced by Toluwalakin Olowofoyeko.

Courtesy of Disney

Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and the African entertainment company, Kugali. Olowofoyeko said that the story was inspired by the city of Lagos, Nigeria, due to Lagos being “the culture capital of Nigeria”, and due to both its mainland and island areas having “a unique, distinct feel” that the creative team felt provided “an interesting base for the story”. Nelson said that the series would be an “opportunity to give people a more holistic view of Nigeria” though it’s “strange but wonderful city”. Producers worked with several nations for the series, while head of story Natalie Nourigat described having a “virtual story room” composed of both Kugali and Disney employees as “a great way to introduce new people”.

Tiana

In this musical series we see Tiana return and continue to explore New Orleans as she sets off for a grand new adventure as the newly crowned Princess of Maldonia, but a calling to her New Orleans past isn’t far behind. Starring Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Tiana. The series is a sequel of the 2009 animated Disney film The Princess and the Frog.

Courtesy of Disney

With this series, Tiana will be the first Princess to have both a film and TV series. Written and directed by Stella Meghie, Tiana will mark the first Walt Disney Animation Studios production to be helmed by an African-American director.

Wish

Ever wonder what would happen if everytime you made a wish, it came true? 17-year-old Asha voiced by Ariana De Bose and her goat Valentino voiced by Alan Tudyk live in the magical kingdom of Rosas, the kingdom of wishes, where wishes can literally come true. Wish asks the question: “How did the wishing star, upon which so many Disney characters wished, come to be?” Asha is an optimist with a sharp wit who deeply cares about her community. When Asha turns to the sky in a moment of need and makes a wish, her plea is answered by a cosmic force, a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, they face the most formidable of foes to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

Wish will be the first hand-drawn Disney animated feature film since Winnie the Pooh in 2011. Wish is scheduled to be released on November 22, 2023 and will be the 62nd animated feature by Walt Disney Animation. The film will be written by Jennifer Lee and directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn.

Disney is known for bringing us universal stories, set in imaginative worlds, filled with compelling characters. Over the years, we have seen boundless creative shows with our favorite characters – as well as  original shows set in all-new worlds. Disney continues to push the limit when it comes to their spectacular animations. We are in for some special adventures this year.

James Bond star Eva Green is set to appear in court in London later this month in a bid to win a long-running legal dispute with UK producers White Lantern Film.

This is the case that first arose back in late 2019 following the collapse of UK project A Patriot, which Green was due to star in and executive-produce. The case is essentially about determining which party was to blame for the collapse, with both parties having competing narratives on the issue.

At the time, Green claimed she was entitled to a $1M fee she agreed at the outset of the project, arguing that since she had a “pay or play” contract she was owed the money regardless of the film’s collapse before cameras rolled.

The actress’s most recent pleading lays bare her breach of contract claim against the producers, including various concerns about the “disorganised and shambolic” pre-production and that the initial budget of €10M was halved and so became a “hopelessly inadequate amount” to make the film.

White Lantern is defending her claim, alleging that the actress’s conduct was unreasonable and in breach of her contractual obligations so she is not entitled to her fee. According to their pleading, the producer and financier SMC allege Green had no intention of completing the production and they are counterclaiming for millions in losses allegedly caused by Green’s conduct.

As part of its evidence, White Lantern will be leaning into messages sent by Green which it unearthed via a court-ordered discovery process. The email and Whatsapp messages reveal that Green called one producer a ‘f****** moron” and the financial backers “a***holes”. She also jokingly referred to herself as “Cruella” when discussing the production team.

Green has vehemently denied the allegations that she derailed the movie. Her lawyers previously said: “Ms Green was at all times ready to perform her contract, and she remained willing and able to proceed in reliance thereon. It was the bridge financiers and White Lantern who unilaterally shut down the production in early October 2019.”

Sci-fi movie A Patriot was also due to star Charles Dance and Helen Hunt.

The trial is due to start in London the week commencing 23rd January, most likely at either the Rolls Building or the nearby Royal Courts.

A spokesperson for White Lantern Film and SMC told us: “These legal proceedings arise out of a failed independent film project in which White Lantern was the production company and SMC was bridge lender.  Ms Green was contracted to provide her acting and executive producer services for a fee of $1M (circa £830,000). The production did not proceed, it is alleged, because of Ms Green’s wrongful conduct – yet Ms Green commenced this litigation to receive her fee.

“The parties’ respective positions are detailed in publicly available Court documents. Those documents were amended last year, with the permission of the court, to allege – in addition to breach of contract – unlawful means conspiracy and deceit involving Ms Green.

“White Lantern and SMC are disappointed to have had to resort to litigation with an actor for the first time in their history. They are confident in proving their defence and counterclaim at trial in the High Court later this month and recovering the substantial losses which they allege were suffered because of Ms Green’s conduct.”

Representatives for Eva Green declined to comment.

Casino Royale, Penny Dreadful and Sin City actress Green is next due to star in big-budget European adaptation The Three Musketeers alongside Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris, Louis Garrel and Vicky Krieps.

White Lantern Films’ movies include 2014 feature Emulsion and 2016 thriller K-Shop. SMC is a division of financier Sherborne Media, whose credits include Greenland and Midway.

Google One, the tech giant’s service expansion to its cloud storage platform, has passed one billion downloads on Android devices, the company has revealed.

The storage app began life as a paid subscription service, expanding the storage capacity of Google Drive, but also provides users with more storage to use in Gmail and Google Photos.

Other features of the service now include extra assistance via Google Support, and a VPN that can be used across devices, which perhaps has a big role to play in the app’s huge uptake.

Features to incentivize

Benefits for those subscribed to the top tiers of Google One include a 10% Google Store credit on purchases, and even periodic offers on free hardware.

The app itself allows you to view a breakdown of your storage usage as well as manage your backups of your android devices. You can also access the aforementioned Google Support feature here too, which you can call, email or chat to.

The VPN that is included with Google One is free for those who own one of Google’s latest smartphone models, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, making the Google One app a real boon for those users, even if they don’t have a paid subscription.

It is also available on PC and Mac, while users on Chromebook will have access to the VPN via the the same Google One app used on Android smartphones.

Google One is yet another in a long line of Google apps to reach over a billion downloads, following in the footsteps of Google Docs, Translate and Lens among others.

The newest tech innovations and advancements are often first showcased at the annual CES convention in Las Vegas. It was Variety Intelligence Platform’s first time at CES, so we thought it would be insightful to ask some execs what tech trend they were most excited about this year.

“I can’t be here at CES in 2023 and not say the metaverse, and it’s both a media and tech trend,” said Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate EVP & Head of Global Products and Experiences, in an interview with VIP+. “I think the most exciting thing about the metaverse and the promise of what it will be and sort of the evolution of web2 to web3 is basically it’s going to change the way that we’re engaging with others, the way that we’re conducting business, the way that we’re experiencing entertainment.”

Anyone who’s been following tech over the past year or two has been seeing the enthusiasm for web3 and metaverse build up rapidly. Judging by the conversations being had at CES 2023, it doesn’t look like that fervor will be dying down anytime soon.

“I’m excited about moving Web3, blockchain technologies past sort of the hype cycle that we’ve seen with digital collectibles and NFTs,” Greg Reed Universal Pictures VP Technology Partnerships said in an interview with VIP+. “And actually starting to think about how we can use the technology for good, for improving digital products and services to provide better experiences for our customers.”

In addition to just the broader excitement around the development of web3, metaverse and blockchain, having real use cases for that kind of technology is what’s exciting, according to Blockchain Creative Labs Chief Experience Officer John S. Couch.

Couch said protecting identity using blockchain will be critical as the world continues to see the migration towards a more remote and virtual world, particularly with the emergence of deep fakes and A.I.

While the past two years have been about learning and understanding, the innovation around metaverse will likely evolve from just experiments to things that become mainstream in 2023, according to Roberto Hernandez, PwC’s Global Metaverse Leader.

Quick, without looking, guess how long it’s been since there’s been a Shrek movie or even a Shrek-adjacent one. Over a decade seems too long for such a popular franchise, right? And yet here we are, 11 years later, welcoming back Antonio Banderas’s swashbuckling feline in “ Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which opens in theaters Wednesday.

No wonder he’s forced to think about his own mortality in this one — certain segments of the audience will be too when they realize how much time has passed. It wasn’t for lack of trying, but things were happening behind the scenes with various directors coming and going. then Universal acquired DreamWorks and they went back to the drawing board under new leadership. Somehow television spinoffs kept coming.

The good news is that the character is evergreen. And as soon as Banderas starts speaking, and singing, as his playfully egotistic character, it’ll feel like hardly any time has gone by at all. In “The Last Wish,” the ever-confident Puss in Boots is shaken to discover that he’s used up eight of his nine lives and, for the first time, has started worrying about his own death.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish – Only In Theaters this Christmas

It might seem a little dour for a children’s animated comedy, but when you start to think about other kids’ movies, it’s actually a quite common theme. Are they the anxieties of the middle-aged creators creeping out or an empathy machine for kids to think about the adults in their lives? Both? Does it matter? It’s a device to rattle our hero, who has a bounty on his head and a big, bad wolf (Wagner Moura) on his tail.

First he tries out retirement life in a home with Mama Luna (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), in which he’s forced to behave like a cat — using a litter box (“so this is where dignity goes to die,” he says) and eating cat food as opposed to his stovetop cooking as a cover of The Doors’ “The End” plays in the background. But he gets a lifeline in the legend of a single wish in a star that’s fallen to earth and is waiting to be granted, sending him, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek Pinault) and a gratingly earnest dog (Harvey Guillén) on an adventure to get said wish.

This is where the movie really finds its groove, with the introduction of Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) who is a kind of crime lord to her family of bears, Mama (Olivia Colman), Papa (Ray Winstone) and Baby (Samson Kayo), and, separately, a no longer little Little Jack Horner (John Mulaney) who are all after the wishing star too.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish – Only In Theaters this Christmas

The vocal cast is an embarrassment of riches, especially Pugh, Colman, Winstone, who are right out of a PG-rated Guy Ritchie movie and should get their own spinoff. Mulaney, too, is a perfect adult brat, bitter about his origin being just a nursery rhyme and not a full fairy tale. He’s another kind of crime brute, collecting and stealing famous fairy tale items to compensate for his own lack of magical powers and uses them to fun ends.

Directed by Joel Crawford, with Januel Mercardo as co-director, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” has enough good jokes (script by Paul Fisher and story by Tommy Swerdlow and Tom Wheeler) to keep anyone amused for an afternoon at the movies. The animation is exactly what you need it to be too and avoids too much of the frenetic anarchy of a lot of kids movies that mistake chaos for excitement.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much time has lapsed, Banderas is welcome back as the “leche-whisperer” whenever he wants.

“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” a Universal Pictures release in theaters Wednesday, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association for “rude humor, language, action/violence and some scary moments.” Running time: 102 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Sundance is just a few weeks away, but it’s not too early to start prepping yourselves for the next industry festival, South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX, taking place March 10-19. There are two 2022 alumni releases happening this month to help you get your adrenaline pumping. They’ll also give you an idea of the kind of intense storytelling celebrated by the festival that industry insiders love. SXSW will also be announcing its full lineup this week, right before Sundance starts!

Description of both SXSW alumni films being released this month and where to watch them

Kicking off January releases, follow a woman terrorized by a stalker who forces her to confront her biggest fear in Jethica and embark on a married couple’s journey to extremes after seeing their neighbor commit a crime in A Lot of Nothing.

Jethica

World Premiere, Narrative Feature, 2022

Jessica lives in fear of a man named Kevin who follows her everywhere she goes. While on a road trip, she reconnects with Elena, an old friend she hasn’t seen since high school. Elena has been hiding out at her deceased grandmother’s ranch in New Mexico. When Kevin mysteriously appears at the ranch, Jessica and Elena seek help from beyond the grave to get rid of him for good. But Kevin is different from other stalkers and won’t move on so easily.

Jethica releases in select theaters January 13 and is then available on Fandor February 14.

A Lot of Nothing

World Premiere, Narrative Feature, 2022

A Lot of Nothing is a wildly entertaining and humorous exploration of what people today do in moments of extreme despair and conflict. Our two main characters, James and Vanessa, seem to be happily married, successful, and comfortable in every way. They are rocked to their core while watching the news one night when they see cell phone footage of their neighbor committing a crime. In a state of shock, and with opposing points of view about how to address the issue, they go on a highly combustible journey to ‘do something.’

A Lot of Nothing is in theaters and on demand February 3.

I’m particularly looking forward to the lineup announcement for 2023 features, which will take place on January 11. Considering that the festival debuted two of my favorite documentaries to come out in the last few years—the astounding Introducing, Selma Blair (which I cried my eyes out watching) and the fun Twyla Moves, a long-overdue documentary on the dance legend in 2021—I can’t wait to see what they pronounce for this year’s event.

In the meantime, you can also inspect the lineup of important speakers scheduled to headline SXSW this year and the featured sessions. The Zombies are also among the musical artists touching down in Austin, TX for the 37th edition of the entertainment festival.

Like much of the industry coming back from COVID, SXSW will be in person this year. Last year’s was a live event as well, with the festival going even bigger. How can we forget such iconic moments such as Voughtland with the full cast of The Boys?

Stay tuned for the full SXSW lineup announcement on Jan. 11, just a few days away.

The Golden Globes return to NBC after a year’s hiatus and are set to air Tuesday, January 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT live on the network as well as on the Peacock streaming service. Jarrod Carmichael will host the ceremony taking place at the Beverly Hilton.

This year marks the 80th edition of the Globes, whose organizer the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been working to address diversity and other issues that came to light, causing NBC to shutter the telecast last year. The group has since revamped its bylaws and boosted representation among its voting memberships. The network and the HFPA late last year signed a one-year deal to resume the partnership.

On Tuesday, NBC sibling E! will air its Live From the Red Carpet pre-show beginning at 3 p.m. PT hosted by Laverne Cox and Loni Love.

This year’s Golden Globes ceremony will see Eddie Murphy receive the HFPA’s 2023 Cecil B. DeMille Award for film and Ryan Murphy the Carol Burnett Award for TV. Sean Penn will introduce Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who will appear remotely.

The ceremony, in a weekday evening slot this year after traditionally taking place on Sundays, has announced a presenter list that includes Mo Brings Plenty, Nicole Byer, Jennifer Coolidge, Jamie Lee Curtis, Claire Danes, Ana De Armas, Colman Domingo, Jay Ellis, Ana Gasteyer, Henry Golding, Harvey Guillén, Regina Hall, Cole Houser, Salma Hayek Pinault, Jennifer Hudson, Natasha Lyonne, Tracy Morgan, Niecy Nash-Betts, Jenna Ortega, Billy Porter, Glen Powell, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Hilary Swank, Quentin Tarantino and Letitia Wright.

As for the trophy chase Tuesday, Searchlight Pictures’ The Banshees of Inisherin comes in with the most nominations of any film with eight, giving that studio a leading 12 noms across film and TV. A24’s breakout indie Everything Everywhere All at Once has six noms, while Paramount’s Babylon and Universal’s Steven Spielberg-directed The Fabelmans have five.

In TV, ABC’s Abbott Elementary lead all nominees with five, followed by Netflix’s The Crown and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and Pam & Tommy, and HBO’s The White Lotus all with four each.

Last year, West Side Story, The Power of the Dog, Succession, Hacks and The Underground Railroad were the top winners.

Tuesday night’s Globes begin a surge of awards-season events that include Wednesday’s SAG Awards nominations, Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards and next week’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations.

The Golden Globes return to NBC after

Chris Harrison is finally telling all. More than a year after he stepped down as host of The Bachelor following a controversial Extra interview in which he excused racist behavior from one of the show’s contestants, Harrison spoke publicly for the first time on Monday via his new podcast, The Most Dramatic Podcast Ever.

“I was heartbroken. I was gutted. I was embarrassed. I was mad at myself. I was disappointed in myself. The last thing in the world I ever wanted to do was be an agent of anything negative, whether it had to do with race or anything,” Harrison said of his “infamous interview” with Rachel Lindsay, the franchise’s first Black lead, that led to his eventual ouster. “The fact that I was involved in this and that I had a big part in this—and I do own that—there were many things out of my control and things definitely spun out of control for a number of reasons. But for my part in this, I was sick, sick to my stomach. I lost 20 pounds. I didn’t sleep. I didn’t eat. I was scared to death.”

The former emcee, who hosted The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and Bachelor in Paradise for 19 years, had urged “a little compassion” for contestant Rachael Kirkconnell after photos of her attending an antebellum-themed party resurfaced during first Black bachelor Matt James’s season. After the interview aired, Kirkconnell issued an apology on Instagram, saying she “didn’t recognize how offensive and racist my actions were, but that doesn’t excuse them.”

Harrison said that while “everybody did agree…it was a messy, really bad conversation and I wasn’t my normal eloquent self,” he “wasn’t really too worried about my job or the show.” The host said he understood that “if I apologized, we would be able to move forward.” Harrison did just that, offering his mea culpa in a Good Morning America interview with Michael Strahan that the anchor called “a surface response.” The Bachelor host promptly announced that he would be “stepping aside for a period of time” from the series.

“Apologies didn’t matter. And I’ve never seen a time like that in my life, I’ve never known that not to work. If you sincerely apologize and open your heart—and it was just like yelling in a cave,” Harrison recalled. “It just didn’t matter. It didn’t move anything and it didn’t move us away from what had just happened. So even after that apology, we were still at ground zero. And it was confusing and it was scary.”

He was “counseled” not to talk further about the scandal in which “my name became synonymous with this political lightning in a bottle moment,” Harrison said, later adding, “Don’t use a crisis manager. I’m not saying they’re full of shit, but they’re not great.” He permanently departed the show in June 2021 and reportedly received a “mid-range eight-figure settlement” from ABC, according to Deadline.

Harrison, who says he no longer watches the series, did admit to keeping an eye on its declining viewership. “I realize the ratings are down 50 to 60 percent and the show has changed dramatically,” he said. “But also that hurts me a little bit because it’s something I took pride in building.” He also called out contestants such as former Bachelor Nick Viall who he said, after smelling “blood in the water,” lobbied for his role. “I know people wanted my job—they’d be crazy not to, it was a great gig, or so it appeared from the outside looking in,” Harrison explained.

THE WHALE

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: Theaters

Director: Darren Aronofsky

Cast: Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, Samantha Morton

Why We’re Excited: “I need to know that I have done one thing right in my life!” pleads a 600-pound Charlie (Fraser), a college writing teacher living a reclusive life in rural Idaho. With his health failing, the only goal in his remaining days is to reconcile with his estranged teenage daughter, Ellie (Sink, from Stranger Things). Hiding from the world in his apartment for years on end, Charlie’s spiral into food addiction follows his lover’s suicide. His nurse and only friend, Liz (Chau), fears that he will die of congestive heart failure any day now. Based on Samuel D. Hunter’s 2013 Drama Desk Award-winning play by the same name, the film by three-time Spirit Awards winner director Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream) has been in the works for a decade and required that Fraser–an awards season frontrunner for his work in the film–spend four hours per day in makeup and wear prosthetics that weighed up to 300 lbs.

M3GAN

When You Can Watch: January 6

Where You Can Watch: Theaters

Director: Gerard Johnstone

Cast: Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jorden Alvarez

Why We’re Excited: Short for Model 3 Generative Android, M3GAN is a creepily life-like A.I. doll with uncannily large anime-style eyes created by genius roboticist Gemma, played by Williams (Get Out, HBO’s Girls). Director Johnstone’s sophomore feature, the sci-fi horror flick is based on a story by James Wan, co-creator of the Saw, Conjuring and Insidious horror film franchises. Designed as a friend, teacher, playmate and protector to any child to whom she is bonded, M3GAN can listen, watch and learn. To test her new product, Gemma pairs M3GAN with her eight-year-old niece Cady (McGraw), who has just lost her parents in a car accident. But when the doll becomes self-aware and overprotective of the young girl, the windfall of a free 24/7 babysitter at your disposal may not be worth the trouble after all.

THE PALE BLUE EYE

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: Theaters, Netflix (January 6)

Director: Scott Cooper

Cast: Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Gillian Anderson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Timothy Spall, Robert Duvall

Why We’re Excited: Based Louis Bayard’s historical mystery of the same title, director Scott Cooper’s (2010 Spirit Awards winner for Crazy Heart) mystery thriller is set in 1830 New York, where a serial killer is on the prowl. After a cadet at the United States Military Academy in West Point is found dead with his heart ripped out, detective Augustus Landor (Robert Altman Award winner for I’m Not There, Bale) is called to investigate the string of murders that follows. To get to the bottom of these gruesome killings, he requires the assistance of one of the cadets, future renowned writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe, played by The Queen’s Gambit’s Melling. Shot in the historic Compass Inn and Westminster College in Pennsylvania, the film is Cooper and Bale’s third collaboration, after crime drama Out of Furnace and the Western drama Hostiles.

HOUSE PARTY

When You Can Watch: January 13

Where You Can Watch: Theaters & HBO Max

Director: Calmatic

Cast: Tosin Cole, Jacob Latimore, Karen Obilom, Scott Mescudi

Why We’re Excited: Music video director Calmatic’s debut feature is reboot of the classic 1990 cult comedy of the same name. Produced by LeBron James (who has a cameo in the film), two house cleaners-by-day/aspiring-club-promoters-by-night, BFFs Damon (Cole, of this year’s historical drama Till) and Kevin (Latimore, Showtime’s The Chi) decide to host the wildest party of the year, at LeBron’s mansion, to make a quick buck, the NBA star’s residence being the duo’s most recent cleaning job before getting fired. Initially conceived as an HBO Max streaming-only release, the film will now be getting a theatrical release as well. Shot in California over the summer of 2021, filming was interrupted by COVID-19 when a cluster of cases emerged amongst some of the extras on set.

BEZOS: THE BEGINNING

When You Can Watch: January 24

Where You Can Watch: VOD

Directors: Khoa Le

Cast: Armando Gutierrez, Kevin Sorbo, Eliana Ghen

Why We’re Excited: With producer Armando Gutierrez (The Mad Hatter, Anastasia) starring as the world’s second richest man (according to the latest Forbes List of Billionaires), this oligarch origin story takes us back to the 1990s, when the entrepreneur who would create the world’s largest e-commerce business was toiling away at a hedge fund executive on Wall Street. It was there that Bezos noticed internet businesses were growing at an alarming of 2,600%, planting the seed of an idea for an empire that could begin with selling books online, but would soon expand to almost every commodity known to man. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, who among us did not try to score some much-coveted toilet paper or Clorox spray on Amazon? Based on Tashena Ebanks’ book Zero to Hero, the film follows the controversial billionaire from when he first quit his day job to focus on launching the business that would reshape the world economy in unprecedented ways.

WHEN YOU’RE FINISHED SAVING THE WORLD

When You Can Watch: January 20

Where You Can Watch: Theaters

Director: Jesse Eisenberg

Cast: Julianne Moore, Finn Wolfhard, Billy Bryk, Alisha Boe

Why We’re Excited: Best known for his acting work in The Social Network, Zombieland and as Lex Luthor, Spirit Awards alum Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut is a keenly observed dysfunctional family drama. Even though she helps people at a domestic abuse shelter every day, uptight mother Evelyn (two-time Spirit Awards winner, Moore) has a hard time handling teenage son Ziggy (Wolfhard), who aspires to become an online celebrity by performing folk-rock songs to his legion of fans, all the while tempering his obsession with a very smart girl in school, Lila (Boe). Shot in Albuquerque, NM, the film premiered at Sundance a year ago.

ALICE, DARLING

When You Can Watch: January 20

Where You Can Watch: Theaters

Director: Mary Nighy

Cast: Anna Kendrick, Kaniehtiio Horn, Charlie Carrick

Why We’re Excited: In yet another feature directorial debut this month, TV director Nighy’s domestic abuse thriller stars two-time Spirit Awards nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air, Pitch Perfect). Stuck in a psychologically abusive relationship with boyfriend Simon (Carrick), Alice (Kendrick) is whisked away on a weeklong trip at a cabin with two of her closest girlfriends under the guise of a birthday celebration, telling Simon it’s a work trip so that he’ll allow her to leave. At the cabin, her friends start to talk some relationship sense into her, but they don’t have long before Simon pops up with bags of groceries to stay. “I’m the only one who knows you. Nobody loves you like I love you,” utters Simon–words that could be romantic if they weren’t from an abusive boyfriend who uses them as tools to instill fear.

ONE FINE MORNING

When You Can Watch: January 27

Where You Can Watch: Theaters (Limited)

Director: Mia Hansen-Løve

Cast: Léa Seydoux, Pascal Greggory, Melvil Poupaud, Nicole Garcia, Camille Leban Martins

Why We’re Excited: Writer-director Hansen-Løve (Bergman Island, Eden, Father of My Children) stars No Time to Die’s Seydoux as bright translator and widow Sandra, raising eight-year-old daughter Linn (Martins) while taking care of her blind father Georg (Greggory). A serendipitous encounter reconnects her with an old friend, Clement (Poupaud), a charismatic cosmochemist. The rekindled friendship soon blossoming into much more. The only problem? He’s married with a young son and doesn’t seem to have any plans to leave his family anytime soon. Torn between her tortured romantic life and the pressures of caring for her dying father and young daughter, Sandra navigates the highs and lows of her daily realities with a genuine sincerity that is at once stirring and heartbreaking. “I always make my films with my feelings,” Hansen-Løve said to the Los Angeles Times. “But because I [value] emotions, I don’t want to force it. I want it to come from truth.”

GOOD NIGHT OPPY

When You Can Watch: Now

Where You Can Watch: Amazon Prime

Director: Ryan White

Why We’re Excited: Narrated by Angela Bassett and co-produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, this doc chronicles the Mars rover Opportunity “Oppy” that was launched in 2003 for a 90-day mission, but ended up exploring Mars for nearly 15 years (!). Including archival footage from NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and recreations of the rover’s path over its long trek, the film is part of last month’s Film Independent Presents screening series. “The story’s storytelling is so compressed, and cross-cuts between past and present so nimbly, that the movie occasionally evokes Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” a blockbuster about the relativity of time and memory,” praises RogerEbert.com lead critic Matt Zoller Seitz.

A Russian frigate armed with ‘unstoppable’ hypersonic Zircon missiles is staging war games as it sails towards Britain.

Footage shows the warship Admiral Gorshkov, which is carrying one of the world’s deadliest weapons, ‘repelling a simulated enemy’s air strikes’ in stormy conditions in the Norwegian Sea – six days into the mission to challenge the West.

The vessel is armed with new Mach 9 nuclear-capable Zircon missiles, which travel at speeds of nearly 7,000mph, as well as Kalibr missiles.

The warship is sailing towards Britain and footage released today showed the vessel taking part in a military exercise. Video on Zvezda TV did not include the launch of any missiles during the drills.

‘The purpose of the exercise was to test the operation of the air defence circuit, its systems, air and electronic lighting systems, anti-aircraft fire systems, tactical camouflage electronic warfare systems and air defence circuit control systems,’ said the commentary.

The tasks were ‘achieved’, said the channel. ‘The ship is ready to repel air attacks from different altitudes and directions.’

The Gorshkov, which is on its first deployment, set sail from Severomorsk last week and is set to pass Britain ahead of war games in the Mediterranean – but Moscow has yet to reveal the exact timings or route for the warship.

Putin as previously claimed the missiles have ‘no equivalent in the world’ and their arrival comes at a much-needed time for Russia after multiple setbacks in Ukraine, with nearly 3,000 troops lost already this year.

After setting sail on its first deployment last week, the vessel immediately fired a test launch of the nuclear-capable cutting-edge Zircon missiles into the Barents Sea, hitting a target 620 miles away in the White Sea, the Kremlin claimed.

Putin could hardly contain his joy announcing the news last week as he said: ‘I am sure that such powerful weapons will make it possible to reliably protect Russia from potential external threats and will help ensure the national interests of our country.’

The president proudly said it was an ‘important, if not momentous, event’ as the vessel set sail in a task force from Severomorsk.

More than 10 months into the fighting, Russia has faced a series of humiliating setbacks on the ground in Ukraine.

The Russian military’s high command has come in for particular criticism in recent days following a strike by Ukrainian forces over New Year in which Moscow said 89 of its soldiers died.

Putin said last week: ‘The frigate Admiral Gorshkov is embarking on a long sea voyage. There is nothing unusual here: it is commonplace, but this time the ship is equipped with the latest hypersonic rocket system Zircon, which has no match.

‘It is a hypersonic sea-based system – [and the vessel has other] latest-generation weapons…

‘As I said, it has no equivalent in any country in the world.

‘I am sure that such a powerful weapon will allow us to reliably protect Russia from potential external threats and help ensure our country’s national interests.’

Putin insisted: ‘I want to stress that we will continue to develop the combat capabilities of the armed forces and produce promising weapons. I would like to wish the ship’s crew every success in their service for the good of the Motherland.’

He added: ‘I am very glad. My congratulations. This is a very big, collective piece of work which ended up with a good result as expected. Begin your task.’

Moscow has previously boasted that the Gorshkov is ‘the most dangerous enemy of surface ships in the world’s oceans’ now it is armed with the new hypersonic missile.

It is also carrying state-of-the-art Kalibr missiles – used against Ukraine – in its armoury.

The frigate’s captain Igor Krokhmal has said previously: ‘No one will see the missile launch or its flight.

‘They will only see when the missile hits the target.

‘A surface target, a coastal target. I don’t think there will be anything to counter this in the next few years.’

Presley Gerber, the son of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, is trying to give the impression that he proposed to another model named Lexi Wood. I did it, guys!, On Tuesday, Presley, who is 23 years old, posted an Instagram carousel that featured a variety of photographs and videos of her parents, who are genetically fortunate.

Guys, I did it. A voice could be heard saying, “I’ve discovered the one who makes me the happiest person I’ve ever been,” over the top of a video clip that displayed Wood donning a Gerber jersey.

In typical fashion for members of Generation Z, the possible announcement was veiled in mystery and interspersed with a variety of unrelated photographs, such as a close-up one of Presley holding onto Wood’s buttocks while she was wearing a bikini and another of her right eye.

Wood provided additional evidence that a proposal had taken place when she shared her beau’s post on Instagram Story and added emojis depicting a lock and key, a love, and an infinity symbol.

After that, the emerald-eyed beauty left a remark on Presley’s post, which said, “loving you,” and the Celine ambassador finished it by saying, “is the easiest thing I’ve ever done.”

The 21-year-old Kaia Gerber threw a party to celebrate what appeared to be an engagement between the two. Even though his comments section was inundated with expressions of joy, a few readers suggested that the couple goes on a LONG engagement.

On the other hand, some people were not convinced that Presley had even posed the question. What the what??? Someone remarked in response to his caption, to which another person reacted, reportedly grabbing her butt for us all to see.

In an Instagram Story on Wednesday, Presley referred to Wood as his closest friend and girlfriend, contributing to the confusion surrounding the past few days’ events. After waiting an hour, she used her account to refer to him as her best friend and boyfriend.

Lynnette Hardaway, better known as “Diamond” of Diamond and Silk, the right-wing YouTubers and media personalities who bill themselves as “President Trump’s most loyal supporters,” died Monday, according to the duo’s official Twitter account.

“The World just lost a True Angel and Warrior Patriot for Freedom, Love, and Humanity! Please respect the privacy of Diamond’s family! Memorial Ceremony TBA,” the announcement read.

Hardaway’s age at the time of her death was not made public, nor was her cause of death. However, the announcement did include a link to a GoFundMe campaign established by Hardaway’s sister, Heather Hardaway Richardson, better known as Silk, pitched as “contributions to preserving Diamond’s legacy.”

In November, the duo’s official Twitter account told fans Diamond was ill, but didn’t specify the illness. In December Hardaway, a COVID-denier who also spoke out against COVID-19 vaccines, denied rumors that she had contracted the illness.

Upon hearing of Hardaway’s passing, Donald Trump posted a message on social media, saying, “Really bad news for Republicans and frankly, ALL Americans.”

Raised in North Carolina, Hardaway and her sister began posting videos to YouTube in 2012. At the time they were registered Democrats and posted videos concerning a suite of mostly left-leaning issues such as police brutality. They became famous however in 2015 after abruptly coming out as ardent supporters of Donald Trump’s presidential aspirations.

By 2016 they were paid consultants for Trump’s campaign and made appearances alongside Trump family members such as Lara Trump. Following the 2016 election, Diamond and Silk emerged as prominent members of the menagerie of combative media figures surrounding Trump and his administration, and were subsequently the subject of outsized media coverage from mainstream outlets.

In 2018, they were given a show on Fox News’ streaming service Fox Nation and made dozens of appearances on Fox News shows. Notably, their tendency to repeat conspiracy theories and make untrue claims about Democrats based, quite literally, on memes, led to at least one instance of Fox having to issue a correction. They were eventually fired by Fox News in March 2020 after repeating lies and conspiracy theories about the then-emerging COVID-19 pandemic.

Most recently, Diamond and Silk hosted a weekend show on Newsmax TV.

“My knees actually got weak when he walked into my trailer,” the Oscar winner said.

Tom Brady left Jane Fonda starstruck.

The legendary quarterback produces and stars in upcoming film “80 for Brady,” based on the true story of a group of senior women who take a road trip to the 2017 Super Bowl to meet Brady. Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno star as the core friend group, with Brady’s former teammates Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski, and Danny Amendola appearing.

“My knees actually got weak when he walked into my trailer,” Fonda told The Hollywood Reporter at the world premiere of the film during the Palm Springs International Film Festival. “I’m in awe of that kind of skill. When somebody is the best in the world at what they do, you have to honor that and respect it. I was just awestruck.”

Fonda continued, “He was kind and humble, which is hard to believe considering how brilliant he is at what he does, but it’s true. He was also sweet and polite.”

Co-star Tomlin, who continues her onscreen partnership with fellow “Grace & Frankie” alum Fonda in the film, gushed that it was “pretty fabulous” to work with Brady.

“He’s a good actor. He’s very personable and unassuming,” Tomlin said. “Just looking at his face and his eyes and watching him listen to me as an actor trying to reciprocate in the same way. I felt like I was that [real-life] woman from Boston who was in her 80s. I felt, in fact, as though he was my son when I had to do this speech with him.”

“80 for Brady” is directed by Kyle Marvin, who also co-wrote the script with Michael Covino, using a draft by “Booksmart” screenwriting duo Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins. Marvin and Corvino will also serve as executive producers under their Watch This Ready banner, along with Jeff Stott. Brady will produce the feature film through his production company 199 Productions, along with Donna Gigliotti and Endeavor Content.

While Brady has briefly dabbled in Hollywood, playing himself in both “Entourage” and “The Simpsons,” the all-star quarterback most recently produced ESPN Original documentary “Man in the Arena” about his own football career.

The film also marks another chapter in lead stars Tomlin and Fonda’s onscreen partnership. The “Grace & Frankie” duo previously told IndieWire that their complementary comedic timing came naturally.

“We worry about not getting the tempo, rhythm and reading right for when it’s supposed to be funny, but we also know that if we think about it and it becomes a head thing, it doesn’t work,” Fonda said. “So, we try to make it organic. That’s her modus operandi. It’s just all kind of organic and spontaneous.”

I admire actors who perform their own stunts since I, a nonathletic nihilist, could never. I’m a writer, not a fighter — ‘action hero’ is so outside my casting! But I’m finally following my therapist’s advice this year to step out of my comfort zone and at least try to live the life I daydream about. So, I reached out to a Hollywood stuntman for a stunt training session.

Y’all, meet Dustin Stern-Garcia — we take acting classes together. Besides being an actor, Dustin’s a professional stuntman who specializes in fight work. He’s been in the game for almost a decade, and has worked stunts on several high-profile films and TV series such as Birds of Prey, Mulan, The Gray Man, WandaVision, and most recently Babylon.

Dustin was down to give me a crash course in stunt fighting and teach me a few moves, so we took a visit to a local stunt gym he frequents for a training session. Here’s what I learned:

1.

It’s all in the body (control) — being able to move smoothly and precisely is the foundation of everything in stunts. So if you’re new to stunt work like me, it’s best to start with the “boring” basics and master your own body.

2.

I don’t need to be the most ripped person in the room to be a stuntman. However, core and tendon strength is crucial — both help stunt folks hold a position, and prevent injuries to themselves and others. After all, the margin of error in stunt work is literal inches.

3.

It’s the reactions that really “sell” a stunt. That’s why there’s a lot more acting that goes into fight performance than most people would expect.

He drove his point further by teaching me the flipping move above, the same stunt Margot Robbie performed on him eight times in a row while filming Birds Of Prey.

4.

I learned that part of being an actor doing your own stunts is being honest about your own strengths and weaknesses, so that you look best on camera. For example, Dustin said my punches were pretty good!

However my reactions to getting stage-punched? “We’d probably cut to your stunt double for that,” Dustin said. A shady response, but the movie would truly look better for it!

5.

There’s a need for speed in stunts — you have to know how to do land a stunt punch or dodge a hook the right way, and it needs to be quick. That takes A LOT of training.

6.

Many people, myself included, think stunts are all about explosive motions, or going all out, each take. But I learned stunts also requires regulating energy — many shoots are at least 12 hours, and stunt people are expected to perform stunts multiple times, hitting their mark (safely) each time.

7.

Stunt people are paid for their experience, readiness, and being adaptable at a moment’s notice. Because on a professional shoot, things move (very) fast.

8.

Even though I have long ways to go in my stunt journey, training never stops for a pro stunt person either. They devote years to training their bodies to be prepared for any situation, so that they get it right the first time and not make mistakes.

9.

It’s unfair for me to compare myself to working actors with stunt training like Dustin, who has been training since he was a kid. The only thing I can do is keep training, and the best place to do it as a local stunt gym!

10.

Also, actors are hardly thrown into a scene and expected to know how to make a fight or stunt look good for the screen. Stunts and fight work are prepped and choreographed long before filming through a extremely collaborative process called pre-visualization, or previs.

11.

Like most careers in the entertainment industry, stunt work is a profession that requires preparation, perseverance, and patience. For Dustin, it took years before it felt like he’d earned his seat at the table.

And when I asked Dustin about Babylon, one of the biggest sets he’s worked on in the last few years, his eyes lit up. “Usually, previs is just about five or so people to step in for the actors — for Babylon, there was 30 of us,” he said. “It was too much fun. The stunt coordinators on that film are actual legends, and they gave us a lot of creative expression. So it was us stunt folks who kind of already all knew each other, out in this giant field with swords and axes, beating each other up and discovering what worked.”

“Stunt work is essentially storytelling through movement,” Dustin said. “It’s always been that. You have to know how to use action in a way that is going to complement the story, and enhance the message of the project. I’ve noticed audiences aren’t as interested in action for the sake of action as before — they want it to tell a story. That’s more and more present in the work I’ve been doing, including Babylon, and why I’m excited to keep sculpting stories, as an actor and stuntman.”

And here’s what training with a stuntman taught me about myself: Not everybody is meant to do their own stunts. And that’s okay! Before training with Dustin, I vaguely understood the complexity of stunt work — I wanted to do my own stunts, but didn’t fully understand the grueling amount of training that requires. So now, I have a different attitude about actors who don’t do all their own stunts: They’re simply letting more experienced professionals do what they do best.

There's never a wrong moment to treat

Marvel’s Phase 5 film is set to hit theaters on February 17.

Football fans who tuned into ESPN’s College Football Playoff National Championship broadcast on Monday night were treated to a lot more than just a new John Williams composition. Marvel Studios debuted a new trailer for “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” and the footage gave fans their best look yet at Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror.

The three-quel sees Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Pfeiffer, Gregg Turkington, and Michael Douglas returning to the superhero franchise, with Kathryn Newton playing Rudd’s daughter and Bill Murray taking on an unspecified role.

The story will be pivotal to setting up the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the studio has made it clear that Kang will be the next major foe for the remaining Avengers to take on. “The Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” is set to open in theaters in 2025, with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” director Destin Daniel Cretton handling directing duties.

But while many fans will undoubtedly be looking ahead to the next “Avengers” film, “Quantumania” director Payton Reed made it very clear that his next “Ant-Man” film will be every bit as epic as Marvel’s ensemble films.

“People felt like, ‘Oh, these are fun little palate cleansers after a gigantic “Avengers” movie,’” Reed said in a recent interview. “For this third one, I said, ‘I don’t want to be the palate cleanser anymore. I want to be the big “Avengers” movie.’ We wanted to go in a different direction, and create an epic movie where the bulk of it takes place in the Quantum Realm.”

Reed continued, “I grew up a real Marvel comics nerd, and there are a handful of antagonists in the Marvel comics universe who are all-timers… Loki, obviously. Doctor Doom from the Fantastic Four. And Kang the Conqueror. In conversations with Kevin Feige and Marvel, it was like, I want to put Ant-Man and Wasp up against a really formidable villain in this movie, and so we’re doing Kang the Conqueror. In the comics, Kang has dominion over time, he’s a time traveler.”

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is set to open in theaters on February 17. Watch the new trailer below.

The Golden Globes are hoping for a comeback for its return with a host Jerrod Carmichael, and possibly some winners that the industry and audiences will approve.

As film awards season heads into phase two, with the Academy Awards nomination voting set to open on Thursday, Jan. 12, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has an opportunity to create some influence with its winners. Searchlight Pictures’ Irish comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” leads the way with eight noms, followed closely by A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” with six. The battle in best picture (comedy or musical) will be one of the hottest of the night.

On the drama side, it could be an easy checkbox selection for Universal Pictures’ “The Fabelmans” in best picture (drama), but Warner Bros’ “Elvis” and Paramount Pictures’ “Top Gun: Maverick” are popular with many of the HFPA voters.

On the television side, the HFPA loves freshman shows and has rarely gone for the final “coronation” narrative. This is a place where HBO’s “House of the Dragon” or Apple’s “Severance” can dominate the drama races, while in comedy, watch out for ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” or FX’s “The Bear” to be the sleeper picks.

Read Variety’s breakdown of each film and television category ahead of the Jan. 10 Golden Globe Awards. Also, tune in for Variety’s live red-carpet pre-show hosted by Marc Malkin and Elizabeth Wagmeister.

Over the past decade, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Negro Leo has united a clear commitment to working class politics with surrealist soundscapes and storytelling, following in the footsteps of the Tropicalists and Vanguarda Paulista and carving out an important niche within the country’s experimental music scene. Much of his work—like a biting noise rock collaboration that inaugurated the independent label QTV—has been engaged with escalating political struggle extending from the 2014 economic recession to the rise of far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro. But at the end of 2022, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva regained the presidency in a massive electoral win for Brazil’s Worker’s Party—and perhaps correspondingly, the beatific psychedelia of Leo’s latest single, “Rela,” seems to reflect a more optimistic future. Over a pulsating two-chord progression, Leo and singer May Tuti repeat phrases in falsetto, their voices drifting in and out like apparitions. The percussion begins as a dash of shuffling ganzá, a smattering of kicks, and a clap doused in echo. But then arpeggiated synths, cowbells, and shakers accumulate into euphoric polyrhythms, ushering in what feels like a blissful new beginning.

Residents of a Vancouver SRO, or single-room occupancy hotel, say the elevator in their building has been broken for nine months.

The St. Helen’s Hotel on Granville Street has 93 units but the building’s lone elevator has been out of order since last summer, which makes getting around a challenge for residents, many of whom have mobility issues or mental health and addiction issues.

One of the residents, Justin Brown, uses a cane to walk and struggles with the stairs in the building.

He told Global News the doors to the elevator are broken and water and fire damage in the building has caused the elevator motor to stop working.

“We’ve been waiting,” he said. “They keep telling us it’s going to be fixed soon. When?”

The St. Helen’s Hotel is owned by the B.C. government through BC Housing and is operated by the Atira Women’s Society.

Janice Abbott, CEO of Atira Women’s Resource Society, told Global News the issue is with safety boots.

“Those safety boots had to be manufactured in Italy,” she said. “They were ordered at the end of last summer and they arrived last week. So the elevator company is scheduled to install them sometime this week. But we’ve also been given a heads-up by the elevator company that the safety boots may not solve the problem or if they do solve the problem, it will likely be a temporary fix. So likely, the elevator will have to be replaced.”

All elevators have safety shoes on them, which prevent the doors from opening and closing when the elevator car hits something or comes into contact with something.

Abbott said it was not acceptable that the elevator has been out of commission for so long. She said that while Atria manages the building, it does not own the building, therefore the decision to replace or make major repairs to the elevator is not Atria’s decision.

“We’ve done everything we can,” Abbott added. “We’re not licenced elevator contractors so we cannot fix the elevator ourselves. We have to rely on our contractors.”

She said she wished decisions could be made faster by the governing bodies who own these buildings.

“Atria has done everything in its power to get this elevator fixed,” Abbott added. “Everything in its power.”

But it is still a frustrating experience for residents of St. Helen’s who call the building home.

Rick Pelletier uses a walker and lives on the 8th floor.

“I asked them when is it going to get fixed but they don’t know,” he said. “I’m crippled, I’ve got bad hips and a bad back,” added.

He said he has got to stop halfway and have a rest when he goes up and down the building stairs.

“I’ve asked them a few times but nobody seems to know when they are going to fix it,” Pelletier added.

The building currently has nine safety issues recorded by the City of Vancouver.

All of them relate to the fire bylaw and Abbott said the fire panel was recently replaced to deal with the fire infractions.

“BC Housing is aware of the issues and is up-to-date,” she added.

Meanwhile, Brown said he struggles every day to get up and down the stairs.

“I’ve fallen down a few times,” he said. “It is difficult for me to walk around here with having to go up and down four storeys of stairs every day. My injury is getting progressively worse, not better. And yes, despite all the help that I’ve been getting, it’s just not enough.”

Brown added that he has done everything he can for himself to make his life easier and if the elevator was fixed, he thinks it would improve his quality of life.

“It shouldn’t be dangerous for me to go home,” he said.

“I’m choked. At first, I was told it’ll be fixed soon. It’ll be fixed soon. And then we were told at the end of the summer it’ll be fixed by, by the end of October. And then October came around and they still weren’t working on it and it was the end of November and they told us would be fixed by the new year.”

‘We need to have a plan for phasing out SROs’: B.C. Premier David Eby

The B.C. government said it has now commissioned an independent review of the way single-room occupancy hotels are operated in the province.

When asked about the issue on Monday, Premier David Eby said SROs are not “fit housing.”

“We need to have a plan for phasing out these SROs and replacing them with dignified housing and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

Eby said the lengthy process is not acceptable to British Columbians but it is going to take some time to make real change.
