Paul Sng’s “Tish,” an intimate portrait of British documentary photographer Tish Murtha, will open the 30th edition of Sheffield DocFest on June 14. Iranian filmmaker Rakhshan Bani-Etemad will be the guest of honor.

In his film, Sng – whose work includes “Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché” and “Dispossession” – both celebrates the vision and humanism of a gifted artist, and follows Murtha’s daughter Ella as she fights to preserve her mother’s legacy.

“’Tish’ is a powerful tribute to a vital artist, activist and social chronicler, and a rallying call to all whose engagement with art questions who gets seen and heard, who doesn’t, and why,” the festival said in a statement. “This is a story of contemporary Britain, of the fight for culture, as well as the life of a mother and activist.”

The film is produced by Jen Corcoran (“Nascondino” [Hide and Seek]) through Teesside-based Freya Films in association with Hopscotch Films and Sng’s Velvet Joy Productions, with cinematography by Hollie Galloway. The voice of Murtha is played by Maxine Peake (“Funny Cow”).

The film was made with the support of the BFI Doc Society Fund (thanks to National Lottery funding) and Screen Scotland, in association with the BBC.

Sng said: “We’re completely delighted that ‘Tish’ has been chosen to open Sheffield DocFest, a huge honor in a fitting city to launch a film about a photographer whose images show the fun, mischief and ingenuity of working class communities. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to interrogate the detrimental impact of Thatcherism and deindustrialisation. More than 40 years later, her images retain an urgency and empathy that speak to the concerns faced by people struggling to pay for food and energy bills in the present day. While this film celebrates the caliber of Tish’s work, it also asks questions about the value placed on working class artists and the communities that nurture them. These are important questions, now more than ever.”

Annabel Grundy, Sheffield DocFest managing director, said: “‘Tish’ shines a light on a working class artist whose work was tragically overlooked while she was alive, and whose story was rooted in the North. We are thrilled to welcome back director Paul Sng to Docfest, who presented the film at early-development stage in our marketplace in 2021 and producer Jen Corcoran who came through our own ‘Future Producers’ school seven years ago.”

Bani-Etemad is one of Iran’s most celebrated filmmakers, and is often referred to as the “godmother of Iranian cinema.” Her work focuses on poverty, criminality, divorce, polygamy, social norms, cultural taboos, women’s oppression and cultural expectations. She will attend in person and will present a Retrospective of six films, including the world premiere of her latest short, “Narratives Ad Hominem.”

The retrospective will be complemented by six features (including five U.K. premieres) from other filmmakers chosen by Bani-Etemad and the festival. Screenings will be accompanied by live Q&As and introductions.

Bani-Etemad said: “Although the Women, Life, Freedom movement was formed in Iran, its reflection spread throughout the world and will undoubtedly be influential in women’s movements in similar societies. The 2023 edition of Sheffield DocFest is smartly focusing its attention on the importance of the women’s movement by showing a number of Iranian documentary films.”

Raul Niño Zambrano, Sheffield DocFest creative director, added: “I have always admired Rakhshan Bani-Etemad’s work and this year is the perfect chance to celebrate her films and her commitment to documentary filmmaking. Looking back at her films now is a very enriching experience that reminds us of the power of storytelling.”

Following a successful return to in-person delivery last year, the 2023 DocFest returns to Sheffield venues including The Crucible Theatre with a series of in-person talks, screenings, and extended Q&As.

Joining the speakers line up of public talks and events will be satirist and broadcaster Munya Chawawa, presenting a talk titled “Satire in Documentary,” supported by Channel 4. He will discuss his approach to integrating satire in non-fiction keeping viewers engaged and cleverly informed. Chawawa was BAFTA nominated for his Channel 4 documentary “How to Survive a Dictator.”

Chawawa said: “I’m looking forward to coming back to Sheffield, my university hometown. At this year’s DocFest I’ll be sharing more of what I have been up to in the documentary space, how I have built my career so far, and how humor can be a powerful tool for truth-telling.”

Fangirled too hard! When a fan named, Cyndi met pop sensation Harry Styles, 29, on the season finale of The Late Late Show with James Corden on Thursday, she seemingly fainted in her seat only to speak out a day later. The “Watermelon Sugar” hitmaker entered the staircase and was immediately greeted by the admirer and after they shared an adorable fist bump, she seemingly fainted back into her chair while on live TV. Cyndi took to TikTok the next day and confirmed that she “did not faint”, but rather, “gracefully” sat into her seat.

“So I’m starting to short circuit… I’m not thinking,” she said in the middle of part two of the video explanation. “I’m perceiving him … he’s perceiving me and we’re both kind of looking at each other and I put my hand out.” After they shared the fist bump that is when things quickly took a turn for the content creator. “He walks away thankfully in time before I,” she said before she cut herself off. “Like all the anxiety and just like the anticipation … the energy of everything all of a sudden drop the minute that man turned around.”

Cyndi continued to confirm that she did not faint, as many reports speculated. “And I gracefully sat on my seat kicking my leg up,” the fangirl added. “I did not faint!” Moments after Harry made his way down the stage toward host, James Corden, Cyndi only had seconds to gather herself until actor Will Ferrell, 55, stepped out. “All of a sudden curtains open again.. Will Ferrell,” she said. “And you can see they gave me like literally point two seconds to recover before I had to literally stand up for Will Ferrell.” The red-haired beauty concluded her video by hilariously telling Harry that her “DMs are open.”

After Cyndi shared her side of the story with her TikTok followers, many of them flooded the comments section of her videos to gush over her fangirl moment. “i’m so happy for u but kinda sad u didn’t actually faint,” one of her fan’s wrote, to which she replied, “LMAO.” When a second follower praised Cyndi for standing up quickly after Harry left, she said she had to “pay respects” to the Step Brothers star. “You got back up real quick,” they joked. Later, one of her followers quipped that they could totally relate to the “fainting” moment. “Babesssss [sic] when I watched it on yt I saw you and I’m like that would be exactly my reaction I’m jealous of you in the best way,” they penned.

While Harry and Will played “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” on the finale episode of James’ show, the One Direction alum came clean about whether or not there will be a band reunion. “Yes or no, will there be a One Direction reunion?”, Harry read aloud. After the crowd responded with screams and shouting he confirmed that it wasn’t entirely ruled out. “I think I’d never say never to that,” the 29-year-old stated. “I think if there was ever a time when we all felt like that was what we wanted to do, I don’t see why we wouldn’t.” James was ecstatic at the response and told Harry he would “take that as a yes!”

James began hosting the iconic late night talk show eight years ago and announced that this season would be his last in Apr. 2022. “I’ve decided to sign on for one more year on the show and that this will be my last year hosting,” he told the audience members last year. “When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey, an adventure. I never saw it as my final destination, you know?” The 44-year-old officially said his final goodbyes and closed the curtain on Apr. 27.

2. Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)

This week’s “Peter Pan & Wendy,” from co-writer/director David Lowery, is an absolute treasure. Lowery has been through the Disney remake gauntlet before; he directed the similarly excellent 2016 remake of “Pete’s Dragon,” which seemingly got him the job to redo “Peter Pan” (the announcement was made before “Pete’s Dragon” had even been released). Now, after all this time, his version of the classic 1953 Disney movie is here. Lowery wisely includes elements familiar to fans of both the story and the animated film, and even-more-wisely removes unnecessary and problematic material that would clash with the sensibilities of modern audiences. (Tiger Lily, for instance, is played by an actual indigenous actress, the great Alyssa Wapanatahk and there’s a young actor with down syndrome who plays one of the Lost Boys.) And most of all this movie is both fun and thoughtful; there are some rousing set pieces (including one with a terrifically reimagined crocodile) but more than that, he makes an effort to embed everything with an emotional realism that has previously escaped previous iterations. And Jude Law is clearly having the time of his life as the tortured Captain Hook, with his prosthetic looking less like the gleaming Christmas ornament of Spielberg’s “Hook” and more like something Candyman would find appropriate. This is arguably the very best of the Disney live-action remakes and could solidify itself as a classic in its own right in years to come. (Streaming on Disney+.)

“Imagine a place where wishes come true.” Disney has dropped the first trailer for Wish, the Disney Animation film, which was first unveiled at CinemaCon.

The trailer introduces 17-year-old Asha, played by Ariana DeBose, the powerful King Magnifico (Chris Pine), Asha’s pet goat Valentino (Alan Tudyk), and Star, a celestial ball of boundless energy that Asha’s wish calls down from the sky. It also features DeBose’s princess belting out a powerful anthem, “So I Made This Wish” as she swirls around underneath a starry sky. It’s one of several new songs written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice for the film.

The film is set in Rosas, a fantastical land located off the Iberian Peninsula. “Our heroine, Asha, lives in Rosas, known as the kingdom of wishes,” said director Chris Buck, who helms the film with Fawn Veerasunthorn. “People come from everywhere to give their wishes to a magical king who promises to grant their deepest desires—someday. Only he can decide which wishes will come true and when.”

Added Veerasunthorn, “We have been inspired by so many iconic films over Disney Animation’s 100 years, especially stories where we explore the power of someone with a wish, combined with the conviction to make that wish come true. Being able to honor that legacy with this incredible story and these amazing characters has been a joy for our entire team.”

In Wish, Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

Pic is produced by Peter Del Vecho (Frozen, Frozen 2) and co-produced by Juan Pablo Reyes (Encanto). Jennifer Lee (Frozen Frozen 2) executive produces and serves as writer with Allison Moore (Night Sky, Manhunt). Score is composed by Dave Metzger.

Wish bows in theaters on November 22.

John Mulaney is answering questions about being asked by Comedy Central executives if he was interested in hosting “The Daily Show” when Jon Stewart bowed out in 2015.

During a recent appearance on Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney’s “Basic!” podcast, Herzog — who was president of Viacom Music and Entertainment Group, which oversaw Comedy Central, until 2017 — asked Mulaney if he recalled the conversation he had with then-president of Comedy Central, Kent Alterman, about potentially taking over. “I think we were floating your interest in that and you were very lukewarm as I remember,” Herzog said.

Mulaney explained that he ultimately passed because, in part, his Fox sitcom “Mulaney” had just been canceled after only one season.

“It was shortly after the SNL 40th anniversary. I had a sitcom on Fox. They aired all 13 [episodes] but it was canceled. It didn’t do good numbers,” Mulaney said. “I remember going to dinner with Kent. I was extremely flattered that y’all were asking me about it. I sensed they would be big shoes to fill.”

Mulaney continued, “I think I also was gun shy from putting myself out there at that moment after the Fox run and I sensed all eyes would be on whoever came after Mr. Stewart… It wasn’t the right thing at the moment. I remember saying to Kent, ‘I wish it was five years from now.’ He went ‘Yeah, but it’s not.’ Kent had a great tone of, ‘I hear you. I’ll hear out anything you have to say, but it’s now and we’re asking you about it. We can’t talk hypothetically for that long at this dinner, John.’”

Trevor Noah, who succeeded Stewart, left “The Daily Show” earlier this year. A rotating group of guest hosts have been filling in on a weekly basis since Noah’s departure.

Mulaney is currently promoting his most recent Netflix special, “Baby J,” streaming now.

“I was 15 minutes into the pilot when I read about David Choe. I understand the idea of it being reductive to stop supporting an Asian-led show because of one actor, but the idea that on-screen diversity is more important than standing firmly against sexual assault and those who perpetuate and normalize it in real life is even more reductive, in my opinion.”

“More broadly, as an East Asian, Asian and Pacific Islander representation has been reductive in itself as Pacific Islanders, Southeast, South, and West Asian people are largely ignored or misrepresented among AAPI media — so it all feels incomplete and reduced either way.”

Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will drop the MCU’s first-ever F-Word, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige actually warned director James Gunn against using it.

Over the past 15 years, the MCU has never once uttered the ever-coveted F-bomb, even though a number of movies and shows have come awfully close to making it happen.

While James Gunn actually came close to using the word six years ago in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 via Rocket Raccoon, the director admitted that it was just for fun and not meant to actually make the final cut.

And though the F-word is guaranteed to pop up in future projects, specifically in the R-rated antics on the way in 2024’s Deadpool 3, that movie would have had its first use if James Gunn heeded a warning from the MCU’s top executive.

James Gunn Ignored Warning from Kevin Feige

Marvel

In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Chris Pratt addressed the moment when he uttered the MCU’s first-ever F-bomb, which was teased in a clip from the movie that was released online.

After congratulating Pratt on that honor, the two joked about Samuel L. Jackson not getting to drop an F-bomb as Nick Fury.

Pratt actually admitted that many have tried to get the F-word into the MCU and that this wasn’t the first time he’s tried to get the word into the Guardians movies:

Pratt: “I think everybody’s tried, you know? With a PG-13 movie, you typically get two SH-words, and usually don’t get – maybe you can get one F-word. So everyone’s always lobbying, you know? Throwing out an improv to get it in there.”

Kimmel: “Is that right?”

Pratt: “Yeah, yeah, for years. It’s not the first one I’ve tried to get into the movie. But yeah, they edited it together and it was a funny beat, and so they kept it.”

Kimmel: “Were you super excited when that happened?”

Pratt: “Yes! Yeah, I’m pretty excited about it.”

Pratt then went on to reveal that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige actually warned director James Gunn about using the F-word, explaining that he didn’t “want to be the guy who’s known for having the first F-word” in an MCU movie.

But in response, Gunn was all for making that happen for himself, leading Marvel Studios to keep the word in the movie:

Kimmel: “Did they huddle and go ‘Wow, we’re kinda getting into different territory here?'”

Pratt: “Yeah, apparently, from my understanding, the story goes that Kevin Feige talked to James Gunn and said ‘Listen, you don’t want to be the guy who’s known for having the first F-word in your movie.’ And James is like, ‘Yes, I do!’ Don’t you know me?! That’s exactly what I want!’ And so, they kept it in.”

After that reveal, Kimmel joked that Gunn might be “working as a double agent” now that he’s the co-CEO of DC Studios, which is often seen as Marvel Studios’ direct competition:

Kimmel: “Although maybe James is working as a double agent. We do know he’s over at DC now.”

Pratt. “Oh my god. You son of a bitch.”

Pratt and Kimmel’s hilarious full exchange can be watched below:

Will Kevin Feige Allow F-Words More Often?

Even though F-bombs are far from uncommon in PG-13 movies, which can only use the word twice, this will be the first time the MCU has taken that opportunity after 32 theatrical releases (including Guardians 3) and eight live-action Disney+ shows.

But with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 now confirmed to bring the MCU’s first instance of using the full F-word, fans will be anxious to see if it’s an isolated incident or if it becomes a trend.

Of course, Deadpool 3 and all future Deadpool movies will be chock-full of F-bombs, with Ryan Reynolds‘ efforts confirmed to be R-rated for Wade Wilson’s hopefully extended MCU future.

And even with Kevin Feige’s warning to James Gunn about taking that chance with Guardians 3, Gunn will look to leave the MCU with a bang as he delivers a final epic adventure to the Marvel universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will debut in theaters on Friday, May 5.

In anticipation of the first trailer for the upcoming DC outing, The Flash, the first poster has now been unveiled and finds Barry Allen standing in the Batcave. Released via social media, the poster reveals another look at Ezra Miller as the super-speedster in his new duds, a glowing red-and-yellow ensemble reminiscent of the character’s modern comic book costume. Check out the poster for The Flash below.

The Flash takes major inspiration from the comic book arc Flashpoint and finds Barry Allen traveling back in time to prevent his mother’s murder. But, while the movie will maintain the madness resulting from Barry’s meddling, the details will be changed dramatically. Barry’s attempt at time travel seems to cause the DC multiverse to collapse, resulting in all variants of familiar characters coming to the fore. This includes Sasha Calle as Supergirl and Michael Keaton, who will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, after more than 30 years. Keaton’s return is one of the big selling points of The Flash, and judging by the poster, Batman is sure to play a major role in both the movie and the marketing.

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and starring Ezra Miller, Ron Livingston, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck, newly appointed DC co-chief James Gunn has since praised The Flash, calling it “one of the greatest superhero movies ever made” and revealing that it will be the movie that “resets the entire DC Universe.”

The DC Cinematic Universe is All Set to Be Rebooted

DC Studios

Thanks to a recent announcement from Gunn and fellow DC chief Peter Safran, we now have a better idea of what the imminently rebooted DCU will entail. The new beginning for the franchise will begin with a Superman reboot, Superman: Legacy, in July 2025, followed by the superhero team-up flick The Authority, a Batman project titled The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, a Wonder Woman prequel series titled Paradise Lost, the animated series Creature Commandos, a series centered on Amanda Waller, a Green Lantern series titled Lanterns, and a series about Booster Gold.

While many of the roles are expected to be recast, Safran did go on to reveal that Ezra Miller’s time as The Flash may not yet be over. “Ezra is completely committed to their recovery,” he said. “We’re fully supportive of that journey that they’re on right now. When the time is right, when they feel they are ready to have the discussion, we’ll all figure out what the best way forward is, but right now, they are completely focused on their recovery. In our conversations with them over the last couple of months, it feels like they’re making enormous progress.”

The Flash is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 16, following many, many, many delays. The first trailer for The Flash is due to debut during Super Bowl Sunday.

Sony has released the first teaser trailer for the Twisted Metal TV series, which is viewable below.

Peacock announced in February 2022 that it had picked up the PlayStation Productions show, and it’s now confirmed plans to stream it in the US beginning on July 27.

It stars Anthony Mackie (Captain America: New World Order), Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Samoa Joe (AEW), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3), Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Neve Campbell (Scream).

Twisted Metal | Official Teaser | Peacock Original

The show, which is written and executive produced by Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai), stars Mackie as John Doe, an amnesiac who “talks as fast as he drives”, according to Peacock.

Doe has to traverse a post-apocalyptic wasteland to deliver supplies to an outpost and will be aided by car thief Quiet (Beatriz), while being pursued by patrolman Agent Stone (Church).

The show is the second TV series from PlayStation Productions, following this year’s hit The Last of Us adaptation.

It arrives ahead of a planned Twisted Metal video game reboot, which VGC exclusively reported last year is in active development at Sony’s Firesprite studio, after moving from original developer Lucid Games, according to sources.
