Keke Palmer celebrated her birthday this weekend with ex(?)-boyfriend Darius Jackson following reports that the actor and the fitness instructor had parted ways.
Palmer and Jackson rang in the “Nope” star’s 30s on Saturday by grabbing drinks and documenting their outing on Instagram Live. The livestream aired on Jackson’s page less than two weeks after Entertainment Tonight and other outlets reported that he and Palmer had separated.
“D, thank you for taking me out on my birthday, as always,” Palmer said during the livestream, which was later posted elsewhere on social media.
“I mean, it’s not always my birthday, but you always take me out. But I just thank you for making it special for my birthday. That’s so sweet.”
After thanking him for the birthday gesture, Palmer proceeded to jokingly call Jackson out for his opinions about Virgos — who were born between Aug. 23 and Sept. 22.
“Let me go ahead and say one thing straight up about Virgos,” Jackson said. “The Virgos, don’t believe the hype. They are one of the biggest spokespersons for themselves.”
“Don’t believe the hype?” Palmer repeated. “But you are really into the Virgos though. So what are you talking about?”
On cue, Jackson began listing all the Virgos in his life, including his mom, his brother, his best friend and his grandma. But he notably stumbled on his words and struggled with what to call Palmer, eventually landing on the term, “partner in crime.”
“So … yeah, I’m surrounded by Virgos,” he said.
“You’re obsessed with Virgos and that’s OK,” Palmer replied. “It is what it is.”
Jackson also wished Palmer a happy birthday on X (formerly Twitter), where he posted an adorable video of the “Hustlers” actor playing with their newborn son. The former football player and the Emmy winner welcomed a baby boy, Leodis Andrellton, in February.
“Happy Birthday to a one of a kind being,” he captioned the clip. “Hoping your 30s brings you many joys & triumphs!”
In the weeks leading up to Palmer’s birthday, Jackson has come under fire on social media for outfit-shaming the “Alice” star online. Last month, Jackson publicly criticized Palmer in response to a viral video of Usher serenading her during his Las Vegas residency.
“It’s the outfit tho.. you a mom,” Jackson replied to a clip of Palmer slow-dancing with Usher in a sheer dress and black bodysuit.
After his unsolicited opinion of how a mom should dress sparked an immediate backlash on social media, Jackson doubled down by accusing his “wife & mother to his kids” of showing off her “booty cheeks to please others.”
Palmer has not addressed Jackson’s remarks — not directly, at least. She did, however, release some “I’m a motha” merch and encourage other moms to “do you” in the wake of the incident.
The former Disney Channel and Nickelodeon star also recently collaborated with Usher on a song called “Boyfriend.” The music video for the track seems to allude to the Jackson drama by prominently featuring Palmer — who at one point winks at the camera and says, “I’m a mother, after all.”
Earlier this month, an anonymous source told Entertainment Tonight that Palmer and Jackson broke up “after he called her out on Twitter for her outfit at the Usher concert.” They have reportedly been co-parenting since the alleged breakup.

Marvel has offered some new tidbits about its upcoming tandem of Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World.
We’ll discuss them and the possibility of Thor 5 in this week’s MarvelBlog News.
Image: Marvel
Tidbits have leaked about what Marvel has in store for Thunderbolts. I recently referenced this fact, but it bears a deeper discussion.
I say this because various sources have uncovered leaks from the set, which is something I’d indicated would happen.
Thunderbolts will highlight characters from Black Widow, Captain America and The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Hawkeye, and others.
Photo: Marvel Comics
While director Jake Schreier has suggested the film isn’t a sequel to Captain America: Brave New World, that’s a bit misleading.
If anything, Thunderbolts works as a semi-sequel to every title I just mentioned PLUS Captain America 4.
Marvel has announced the return of Bucky, Taskmaster, Ghost, Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent, Red Guardian, and several new characters.
Photo: Marvel
Also, Harrison Ford will take over the role of Thunderbolt Ross from the late William Hurt.
Presumably, with Ford involved, Thunderbolt Ross will play the most important character in the movie, just as Robert Redford did in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
That’s not the novelty of Thunderbolts, though. Instead, it’s the storyline, which mirrors two DC Studios releases you may have already seen.
Source: Marvel Studios
Yes, I’m talking about Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad, as the similarities here are unmistakable.
In the comics, Suicide Squad arrived in 1959, although you could argue its primary usage didn’t occur until 1987.
Meanwhile, Marvel wouldn’t unveil the Thunderbolts until 1997. So, they’ve always been perceived as the knockoff, which is true of most Marvel books.
Source: Marvel
Remember that Marvel arose in the 1960s, decades after DC had kickstarted the entire industry.
Marvel is objectively better, though, and that’s why there’s greater interest in a Thunderbolts movie.
We’ve expected this one for a while, arguably as soon as Ghost was allowed to live in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Source: Parade
That’s the part of Thunderbolts that’s so intriguing. Many of these characters started as villains and are now ostensibly trying to redeem themselves.
However, Thunderbolt Ross is now and always will be a villain, and the presumed arrival of Red Hulk won’t change that.
So, the expectation is that some Thunderbolts will rise up against Ross, while others will embrace their villainy.
Source: New York Times
That’s a recurring theme from the comics, where some villains like Bullseye have zero intention of going straight. Others like Songbird have truly reformed.
With Thunderbolts, we’ll learn which of the recent villains has turned over a new leaf versus which ones prefer the dark side.
I quite like the idea of someone like U.S. Agent remaining evil, even though that’s my speculation rather than news. It’s the kind of nuanced storytelling Marvel offers, though.
Photo: IGN
Before we reach that point, Captain America: Brave New World will define Thunderbolt’s menace, as Ford appears in both films.
Based on recent rumors, Thunderbolt won’t be the only antagonist, though.
The WWE’s Seth Rollins accidentally revealed that the Serpent Society will appear in the film.
Source: Marvel/ Universal
Apparently, the person funding them is The Leader, a returning character from 2003’s The Hulk, which isn’t even an MCU film.
Folks, Marvel is really trying some stuff here, making these twin projects extremely ambitious and cause for excitement.
Sadly, we won’t get to watch either one until 2024, and Thunderbolts may face a delay in 2025 if the current Hollywood strikes continue for much longer.

Sometimes, a story doesn’t make sense despite the surrounding facts.
For example, Bob Iger the CEO of The Walt Disney Company, lamented some of Marvel’s recent decisions.
Iger, the person who spearheaded Disney’s purchase of Marvel Entertainment, believes the studio made a mistake with its recent releases.
Source: Marvel Studios
Specifically, Marvel went to the well once too often with its sequels rather than embracing new stories.
Iger believes films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Thor: Love and Thunder shouldn’t have entered production.
Instead, Marvel should have proceeded with new characters or provided existing ones with platforms for their own standalone stories.
Image: Marvel
For this reason, a recent rumor doesn’t make much sense. And it involves Thor 5.
During a recent conversation, Taika Waititi discussed his plans for another Thor movie.
As a reminder, Waititi directed Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok – The Art of the Movie. Photo: Amazon
One of those films is wildly popular with Marvel fans, while the other is…Thor: Love and Thunder.
After fans expressed their frustration with the most recent Thor film, Iger’s comments suggested that he agreed that Marvel had beaten a dead horse enough.
That’s why Waititi’s comments drew attention. The director sounded like he already had a plan in place for Thor 5.
Photo: Marvel
To a certain extent, that’s understandable, as a Marvel creator should be leaving room for what comes next while filming a current project.
Waititi wants Thor to face a character even more powerful than Hela to test the Norse deity’s maturation in the MCU.
This proclamation caused reporters to do a bit of digging. What they discovered is that Chris Hemsworth hasn’t signed on for a new Thor film.
Photo: Marvel Studios
Even if one were in pre-production, Marvel may not bring back Waititi due to the lackluster reception for Love and Thunder.
So, this is probably nothing. Probably.

Let’s start with the fun one. Marvel has revealed the Funko POP! lineup for X-Men 97. These figurines are delightful!

— X-Men Updates (@XMenUpdate) August 23, 2023
In less expected news, Marvel has announced Blu-Ray and 4K UHD releases for Loki and WandaVision, which kinda makes me wonder what year it is.
Finally, I’m chasing one other story that frankly sounds wrong to me.
Source: Marvel Studios
Production Weekly has listed Wiccan and Doctor Strange 3 on its schedule of upcoming projects.
I suspect neither of these titles is in the offing, as Production Weekly sometimes lists possible productions in addition to real ones.
Source: Marvel Studios
Still, I’ll keep you informed if anything viable comes out.
For now, I view Dr. Strange 3 as less likely in the short term than Thor 5, and I don’t think Thor 5 is happening anytime soon.

In the first two episodes of Star Wars: Ahsoka, we’re introduced to a new dark side Force user, a shrouded mercenary named Marrok. Given Marrok’s clothing and style of lightsaber, the suggestion from Ahsoka‘s creators is that Marrok is a former Inquisitor. But our theory is that this Marrok is also the former Jedi Barriss Offee. The reasons for this are many. For starters, Barriss Offee has a long history with Ahsoka during the Clone Wars. But Barriss also betrayed Ahsoka towards the end of that conflict, leading to a chain of events that caused Ahsoka to leave the Jedi Order for good. The long relationship with Ahsoka would make Barriss the perfect character to live behind Marrok’s mask. But before we get to the question of Inquisitor Marrok’s true Ahsoka identity—here is a deeper explanation of just who Barriss Offee is and her Star Wars history.

The character of Barriss Offee was not created for Star Wars animation but actually debuted in live-action. Blink and you’ll miss her, but you can see Barriss (Nalini Krishan) in the battle of Geonosis in Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones, igniting her blue lightsaber. George Lucas and Dave Filoni later brought Barris Offee back in season two of The Clone Wars, voiced by Meredith Salenger. Before any possibiliy of Barriss becoming Star Wars‘ Inquisitor Marrok, Ahsoka and Barriss were Padawans together and survived a harrowing ordeal together on the planet Geonosis. These events, which occurred during The Clone Wars season two, were a significant milestone in Ahsoka and Barriss Offee’s young lives.

But in season five of The Clone Wars, Barriss betrayed Ahsoka and framed her for a crime she did not commit. On the Star Wars show, Barriss became disillusioned with the Jedi’s role in the ongoing wars. She believed leading an army into battle was a betrayal of their principles. The Jedi’s role was as keepers of the peace, not soldiers. She succumbed to the dark side and organized a bombing at the Jedi temple. This attack killed civilians and Jedi both. She then murdered the woman who helped her execute it. Barriss Offee framed Ahsoka for this terrible act, which led Ahsoka to go on the run after the Jedi Order didn’t believe her innocence.

Ahsoka’s master, Anakin Skywalker, ultimately discovered that Barriss Offee was the true culprit behind the attack. So he confronted her in a fierce lightsaber duel. Barriss, by tapping into the dark side, held her own against the Chosen One, but Anakin ultimately defeated her. Ahsoka eventually proved her innocence, but left the Jedi Order without completing her training, betrayed by their lack of trust in her. Barriss Offee admitted her guilt in front of the Republic Senate, admitting she was responsible for the actions she pinned on Ahsoka. The Senate presumably sent her to prison. That means she was incarcerated when Order 66 went down. But did Barriss Offee die in the Star Wars universe? Or did the Empire find another use for her, as they did with other Jedi with dark side inclinations?

So what happened to Barriss Offee after the Clone Wars? As we learned in both Star Wars Rebels and in Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Empire took certain Jedi younglings and other survivors, and tortured and brainwashed them into becoming Inquisitors. The role of the Inquisitors was to hunt down and kill any remaining Jedi who survived Order 66. Barriss, who already hated the Jedi for what she perceived was their betrayal of the Republic, would have been a perfect candidate. And since she actually held her own against Anakin Skywalker in battle, Darth Vader might have seen Barriss Offee as an ideal choice to become Ahsoka‘s Inquisitor Marrok. By the time of A New Hope, the Inquisitors seemed extinct. But there’s nothing stating for certain that none survived the Galactic Civil War.
But there is another reason we believe Ahsoka‘s Marrok is likely Barriss Offee. A comment that Dave Filoni made about her back in 2015 at Star Wars Celebration lends strong credence to the idea of Marrok’s secret identity being that of Barriss. The character was originally supposed to kill herself at the end of that arc, but Filoni changed his mind. He said “I had plans for Barriss, and still do… Do [Ahsoka and Barriss] ever meet again? That’s a great question. It would make a great story, but not a story we’ll tell today.” He never told that story in Rebels. Wouldn’t Ahsoka be the perfect place to finally show the Barriss and Ahsoka reunion/confrontation?
If there’s one thing suggesting Marrok is not Barriss, it’s that the character is played by male performer Paul Darnell. But that could easily be a misdirect, so we don’t suspect that Marrok is a woman under that helmet. Remember when Black Widow had a man play Taskmaster for all the masked scenes, but in the reveal was actually a woman, played by Olga Kurylenko? We foresee something similar here.
When you put together the way Barriss’ character lends itself to the story of an Inquisitor, add the intensity of her personal history with Ahsoka, and take into consideration Filoni’s comments, Barriss Offee becoming Ahsoka‘s Marrok seems to fit perfectly. The confrontation between Barriss and Ahsoka is a long time coming, and we hope Star Wars: Ahsoka delivers on this plot twist.

Alien Hominid HD will be coming to most modern platforms, developer The Behemoth has announced.
The classic run-and-gun game was originally released on entertainment website Newgrounds as a Flash game back in 2002, before being ported to the PS2, Xbox and GameCube in 2004, and the Game Boy Advance in 2006.
An HD version was then released on the Xbox 360 in 2007, and this version is still the only way to play it on modern systems to date (via Xbox backwards compatibility).
In a blog post, The Behemoth stated that it planned to remedy this by releasing Alien Hominid HD on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and Steam.
The game will be released later this year alongside Alien Hominid Invasion, an “all-new re-imagination” of Alien Hominid with new gameplay and new mechanics. This is planned for release on Xbox One, Switch and PC.
“Adding to the excitement,” The Behemoth said, “the newly-ported and polished Alien Hominid HD will be available to purchase in a bundle with Invasion, saving you some hard-earned lunch money in the process.
“When can you get your hands on the individual games, or the bundle, you may ask? Well, we haven’t announced a release date yet, so prepare yourself for another announcement coming soon.”
Neither Alien Hominid HD nor Invasion will be coming to PlayStation platforms. Back in 2020, shortly after Invasion was announced, The Behemoth claimed on its Twitter account that it was too much work to port to too many systems at launch.
“Alien Hominid Invasion won’t be coming to the PS4 at launch, unfortunately,” it said at the time. “It’s a ton of work to come to even three platforms at launch, and this is the first time we’re attempting it.”
Alien Hominid was designed as an homage to run-and-gun games like Metal Slug, and stars a yellow alien who has to kill an endless wave of Secret Agents trying to capture him.
The game was critically acclaimed not only for its solid gameplay, but for its impressive animations and comically graphic deaths, including the ability to bite enemies’ heads off.

As technology advanced, the musical genre evolved, producing legendary classics like Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and The Sound of Music (1965).
These films not only showcased the talents of actors but also pushed the boundaries of choreography and visual storytelling.

The vast multiverse of “Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse” contains dozens of animated variations of the web-slinging Marvel hero. But even with a two-and-a-half hour runtime (and a second film, “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” slated for next summer) there’s not room for every riff on Spider-Man to make the final cut. One fan favorite character nearly left out of the adventure was Daniel Kaluuya’s ultra-cool British antihero Spider-Punk.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Across the Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and co-director Kemp Powers recalled the process of casting Kaluuya as the web-slinging punk rocker. The filmmakers recalled that they considered cutting the character from the film — but ended up expanding his role once they realized Kaluuya was a perfect fit.
“Some people were like, ‘Is there a way to simplify this? There’s so many characters. Do we really need Spider-Punk?’” Miller said. “But once we got to know Daniel, we rewrote the part so it became more necessary.”
“He was in and out of the picture for a little while,” Lord added. “We weren’t sure which elements we were going to stick in this part and which were going to migrate to the next movie.”
Lord explained that after meeting Kaluuya, they “realized that he had to be Hobie Brown, no matter the cost. And Hobie had to be in the movie because that personality needed to be part of the story.”
As it turns out, Kaluuya was an influence on the character long before he became formally involved with the film. Powers explained that the animators used the “Get Out” star’s voice as a point of reference when developing early mock-ups of the character’s mannerisms. Once Kaluuya was cast in the role, adjusting the animation to fit his voice acting was a very smooth process.
“As we were doing visual development on the character, we were actually using audio clips of interviews with Daniel Kaluuya,” Powers said. “Daniel Kaluuya’s natural speaking voice was right in the pocket of that effortless cool we envisioned the Hobie character having from the beginning.”

For every Last of Us show that is a hit, we get a Halo that’s a miss, so we are going to discuss games that should be next to be turned into Live Action TV Shows. Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War are already being made so let’s look at the ones that aren’t.
Final Fantasy
I hope you noticed I didn’t say a number after the words Final Fantasy for one simple reason, the show should cover them all. I know what your thinking, CJ these games have been around since 1987 and there are so many of them, and so many versions, remakes and spin-offs. The games usually centre around a group of heroes battling against a great evil, making friends, battling monsters and losing friends. It would be crazy not to make them into a TV show.
It would be crazy not to make them into a TV show with characters and stories adored all around the world. Exciting worlds to explore and, of course, giant chicken chucker balls. Who wouldn’t want to see that? It would have you smiling, laughing, like Titus or Titus, whom we want to call them and Yuna. Even Final Fantasy 16 is just Game of Thrones but with a better ending. Every season could be a different entry in the season to keep it fresh, we could even have some sort of Final Fantasy Multiverse, it worked for Marvel (sorry DC) so why can’t it work for Final Fantasy?
Uncharted
Yes, before you say it, Uncharted has had a live-action movie, but the less we say about that the better (sorry Tom). But Uncharted from Naughty Dog is a celebrated game from the lovely folks at Naughty Dog, you know the people that just had that highly successful show with everyone’s favourite internet daddy Pedro Pascal.
But if Naughty Dog can bring the last of us to life. Why can’t they do it with Nathan Drake and give us an action-packed adventure that they promised us in the movie and not that moustacheless Mark Wahlberg. For those of you unaware, Uncharted has Nathan Drake and sometimes his friends gone off on Wild Adventures, Indiana Jones style hunting for some sort of lost treasure, racking up a kill count greater than any serial killer and never facing the consequences.
One thing Uncharted does better than any other game, and that’s its action sequences. Seeing them come to life on our TV screens each week would have me watching and cheering Nathan, even if he has to murder everybody in the vicinity.
Zelda
Link adventures in different dungeons every week would keep the show fresh and action-packed. With so many versions of the Zelda games out there, Nintendo could easily convert any of the games into a series. But we all know how it would go. Link can’t find the princess Ganon has the Triforce. Link visits multiple destinations in order to fight Ganon, Ganon is defeated and the Triforce is returned alongside Princess Zelda. Even after all of this, all boiling still can’t seem to get those Zelda smooches. Poor guy.
Fans are desperate to see the world of Hyrule come to life. And I can’t think of a better story to tell than one of the greatest games ever, The Ocarina of Time.
Metal Gear Solid
There is no greater espionage and stealth game than Metal Gear Solid. It has more twists and turns than a politician trying to cover up some sort of scandal. Metal Gear Solid needs Solid Snake and the big boss story told. And there’s only one man I trust to do it, and that is Hideo Kojima. It’s highly unlikely will ever see Hideo you back working on Metal Gear Solid. But we can all just still live in hope. His crazy vision applied to the TV world will certainly confuse, but damn, I’d be watching every single week.
It’s fair to say that Metal Gear Solid has its fair share of crazy scenes. That would be amazing on a TV show. Just imagine it. Solid Snake is walking through Shadow Moses and comes across Psycho Mantis, and there he is controlling all of the guards like his little puppets and making them do a dance. It worked for the TV show Legion, so why can’t we have it on a Metal Gear solid TV show?
Personally, I’d love to see a Psycho Mantis fourth wall break, acknowledging it’s a TV show and messing around with the audience’s minds, or even the Flaming Unicorn, or how are they going to explain a magical bandanna given unlimited ammo? Or just seeing Revolver Ocelot arguing with his hand? But as crazy as the story of Metal Gear is, it would certainly be gripping storytelling for a TV show. It would have us sitting on the edge of our seats or even hiding under a cardboard box.
Control
Remedy has a bit of a history of messing with all minds with the game. Alan, Wake and Control and Alan Wake are rumoured to have a TV show coming out very, very soon. So could we be seeing the characters from Control? Could we be seeing some sort of crossover? That would be amazing. In control. You play, as Jesse is on the hunt for her missing brother when you visit a place called the oldest house. This house is the location of the Federal Bureau of Control, which investigates all Altered World Events, or AWEs. Jesse has a friend who lives in her head, communicating with her and has summoned her to visit.
As a TV show, we could have Jesse or a new character going out into the world and investigating these AWEs and coming back to the oldest house leading up to the events of control. The game was visually stunning and it played with your concept of reality and we all bit our fists like Leonardo DiCaprio when that music number kicked in during the maze section. As I’ve mentioned, an Alan Wake TV show is currently in the works. Maybe we need to have control to be part of that universe, some sort of spinoff. I mean, who wouldn’t like to see some of these AWE events on TV? And plus, how would they explain a crazy fridge or supernatural Rubber Duck?
What did you think of our first 5 choices? Who would you cast as characters like Solid Snake and Link? Let me know in the comments below!

It’s been a while since the domestic box office enjoyed a nice shake-up, but that’s what happened this week thanks to some new debuts and falling fortunes. But the main story is that video game adaptation/true story Gran Turismo juuust barely beat Barbie to claim the top spot, and by “juuust barely” we mean that only $200,000 separated the two movies. Gran Turismo made $17.3 million in its debut, with Barbie making $17.1 million in its sixth week (just a few million short of $600 million total domestic).
The rest of the top five are Blue Beetle (falling to third after debuting at number one, with $12 million this week and nearly $50 million total), Oppenheimer ($9 million this week, just over $300 million total), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ($6 million this week and almost $100 million total after four weeks). Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are holding on well, and while they’ve definitely slowed in the past month, they haven’t slowed that much.
In the bottom half of the top 10 we have Meg 2: The Trench ($5 million and a total of $74 million after four weeks) and then Strays (falling more than 40 percent in its second week with $4 million and $16 million total). Then there are those newcomers: Liam Neeson car movie Retribution and Dennis Quaid baseball movie The Hill. They both had relatively small rollouts, but the also didn’t do especially great anyway ($3.3 million for the former, $2.5 million for the latter). Finally, Haunted Mansion drops to 10th place with $2 million and a total of $62 million in its second week, with the top 10 officially saying goodbye to Talk To Me, Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One, and Sound Of Freedom.
Other notable things: A re-release of Jurassic Park made $1.7 million, and Bottoms—in a very limited rollout of only 10 theaters—made a very impressible $516,000. That means its per-screen average was over $50,000, which is way better than anything else this week.

Florence Welch revealed she had to undergo life-saving emergency surgery after canceling several concerts six days earlier.
In a statement posted to Instagram on Sunday, Welch explained that she didn’t “really feel strong enough” to tell fans about her medical condition that led to the past few Florence + the Machine shows being canceled, including performances at the Zurich Openair and Rock en Seine festivals.
“I’m so sorry that I had to cancel the last couple of shows,” she wrote. “My feet are fine, I had to have emergency surgery for reasons I don’t really feel strong enough to go into yet, but it saved my life.”
The singer also shared that she would return to the stage on Sept. 1 “to close out the Dance Fever tour in Lisbon and Malaga (maybe not jumping so much, but you can do that for me).”
“Suffice to say I wish the songs were less accurate in their predictions. But creativity is a way of coping, mythology is way of making sense. And the dark fairytale of Dance Fever, with all its strange prophecies, will provide me with much needed strength and catharsis right now,” Welch’s statement concluded.
In November 2022, Florence + the Machine postponed its “Dance Fever” tour while on its U.K. leg after its matriarch, Welch, announced she had broken her foot.
“I’m sorry to say that after an X-ray I was dancing on a broken foot last night,” Welch wrote on a statement posted to her social pages. “It is not in my nature to postpone a show, and certainly not a U.K. tour, but I’m in pain and as dancers know, dancing on an injury is not a good idea. And [I] have been told not to perform to avoid further damage.”

Former President Donald J. Trump returned to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday night after a hiatus of more than two years.
Mr. Trump posted a link to his website and a photo of his mug shot in his first new post on X since Twitter banned his account after the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. “Never surrender!” the caption under the mug shot read.
Mr. Trump returned to X one day after the airing of an interview he gave to Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host, who now streams his talk shows on the service. The interview aired as other Republican candidates for president took part in their first debate on Wednesday night.
When Twitter barred Mr. Trump, the company said he had glorified violence with his posts on the platform, encouraging his supporters to storm the Capitol. But Elon Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist” who bought the social network for $44 billion in October and recently renamed it, said barring Mr. Trump had been a mistake. He reinstated Mr. Trump’s account in November, although it had sat dormant since then.
Mr. Trump relied on Twitter as a megaphone for years, using the platform to attack opponents, rally supporters and issue policy directives. After the ban, he helped start his own social network, Truth Social.
Mr. Trump has a financial stake in Truth Social and is obligated to make his posts available exclusively on the service for six hours before sharing them on other sites, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He can post to any site immediately if the messages involve political messaging, fund-raising or get-out-the-vote initiatives. Mr. Trump has a large Twitter following — 86.5 million people, compared with only 6.5 million who follow his Truth Social account.
After Mr. Musk purchased the company, Mr. Trump said he would not return to Twitter, adding that he preferred Truth Social. He also mocked Mr. Musk last year when the Tesla chief executive threatened to back out of the Twitter acquisition, saying in a Truth Social post that Mr. Musk was overpaying for the platform and had begged him for help on “his many subsidized projects, whether it’s electric cars that don’t drive long enough, driverless cars that crash, or rocketships to nowhere.”

Amazon Studios has debuted the first trailer for its long-anticipated sci-fi drama Foe, starring Academy Award nominees Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) & Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad), which it will release in U.S. theaters October 6th.
Co-written, directed and produced by Garth Davis, the filmmaker behind the Academy Award-nominated Lion, the film adapting the book by New York Times bestseller Iain Reid (I’m Thinking of Ending Things) is billed as a haunting exploration of marriage and identity set in an uncertain world, which pits humanity against an artificial alternative.
The year is 2065, and Hen (Ronan) and Junior (Mescal) are a married couple with seven years under their belt, living a solitary life on their isolated farm that’s been in the latter’s family for generations. But their quiet life is thrown into turmoil by the arrival of an uninvited stranger (Pierre), who shows up at their door with a startling proposal.
Junior, he says, has been selected to live “up there” — meaning on an experimental state station orbiting Earth. But not to worry. Arrangements have already been made so that when he leaves, Hen won’t have a chance to miss him, because she won’t be left alone — not even for a moment. She’ll instead be met, the trailer suggests, with some kind of robotic equivalent of her spouse. The company she then keeps will push her to make a life-changing decision.
Set to world premiere in the Spotlight section of the New York Film Festival, which runs this year from September 29th through October 15th, Foe will be released by Amazon in Canada on October 13th, coming to Australia via Transmission Films on Oct. 19th, and to the UK and Ireland via MetFilmDistribution on Oct. 20th.
Davis directed from his script written with author Reid. Producers included Kerry Kohansky-Roberts for AC Studios, Davis for I Am That, and See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning, with Dawn Olmstead, David Levine, Robert Walak, Samantha Lang and Reid serving as executive producers.
Reminiscent of the recent Black Mirror episode “Beyond the Sea” starring Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett and Kate Mara, the film’s trailer can be found above.

The Hollywood Critics Association, which had recently been hit with allegations of malfeasance and accused of harboring a hostile membership environment, has completed an organizational restructuring that it believes will address those issues. The HCA was set to reveal those plans to its 180 members this afternoon, including a new name: The Hollywood Creative Alliance.
Hollywood Critics Association leader (and We Live Entertainment journo) Scott Menzel, who was at the center of much of the controversy, will still remain as CEO/president, but will be joined by a new board: vice chair Yong Chavez of ABS-CBN; member engagement head Jeandra LeBeauf of Black Girl Nerds; secretary Morgan Rojas of Cinemacy; and treasurer Louis Valentine, an external CPA who will handle finances as an outside member. The HCA holds several awards shows every year that have been well attended by A-list talent, including ceremonies for both TV and film.
The restructure was handled by Menzel with the guidance of corporate operation strategist Leslie Short of the Cavu Group. Under Short’s instruction, the HCA was reformed as a 501 c6 membership-based non-profit organization. The organization also put together an extensive member handbook with rules and membership requirements, as well as a code of conduct, all of which will have to be signed and agreed to by members. That handbook will also spell out voting procedures for the org’s HCA Awards.
Current members will be invited to join committees such as membership/culture, in-house content, events, a creative arts nominating committee, a film committee for shortlists and a television nomination committee. A new advisory committee aims to recruit industry insiders to help consult with the org.
The decision to bring in Short came after former HCA board president Nikki Fowler resigned in June, blaming a “hostile, biased and dismissive executive work environment.” And Fowler’s exit came after the HCA had already been under fire in 2022 when a then-member, Shannon McGrew, took to social media to question some of the group’s procedures, including how funds were handled internally. That led to a very public back-and-forth online between members, followed by resignations by several members (including some Variety staffers).
“I listened to what members were saying and I saw what was online,” Short said. “I spoke with Scott and some of the other folks that were there helping with leadership roles that were very loose. It was a loose organization that was running. I said, ‘this is great, but you’re going nowhere fast.’ There is potential. But we have to really build a foundation of what is this organization. Is it a nonprofit? Is it registered as a nonprofit? What does the name mean? What is the mission? What is the vision? How are you speaking to members? How do members feel?”
Short said “transparency” was something that frequently came up in conversations, but she instead uses the term “visibility.” That led to the creation of the handbook. “Everything is written down now,” she said. “Of course, anything can go on paper. We also put in place people who are going to be responsible and accountable for those committees and those divisions. We’re going to keep it tight in the beginning and then gave them room to grow.”
After a Hollywood Reporter expose on HCA noted that the org had failed to file the proper papers with the IRS, Menzel and Short said that has also been sorted out during a top-to-bottom overhaul. “We went from the business of creating a nonprofit that is registered that was with the correct attorneys to the name,” Short said.
Indeed, the most immediate shift is the decision to remove “critics” from the HCA’s name. Founded in 2016 as the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, the group was renamed by Menzel to the Hollywood Critics Association in late 2019.
“In these past two and a half months, we really took the time to talk to membership,” Menzel said. “We did phone calls, we did surveys. And the biggest surprise of doing those surveys was that several members of our organization did not identify as critics. We put a list together of what you would identify as, including publicist, actor, filmmaker, content creator, and it was pretty alarming to see that most people were either checking multiple boxes, and a large percentage of people who weren’t critics. The biggest thing that came down to it was, is this name the right name for the future?”
As the Hollywood Creative Alliance, Menzel said the plan is to make it clearer that the organization is made up of “critics, entertainment journalists, content creators, industry influencers and creatives.” It also reflects the HCA’s move into creating its own content, including podcasts, screening series, a magazine and after shows. Menzel said keeping the “critics” name would be “lying to the public.”
“If we said we are a critics organization, we’re not,” he said. “We have the opportunity now as part of this restructure to rebrand and become something that is kind of all-encompassing of this industry… it’s the future of what everyone’s doing. We’re all in a lot of ways creatives, we’re all content creators, whether you’re a filmmaker, a YouTuber, a podcaster, that’s the direction everyone’s going in.”
Menzel and Short said only critics and entertainment journalists will vote for the HCA Awards, however: “Because we’re just starting this relaunch and the critics and entertainment journalists have always been the anchor, that’s really important to us to make sure that they’re still front and center for right now,” Menzel added.
Asked about the very public group in-fighting, Short said, “I’m not going to say one person is wrong and one person is right. I’m going to say that there are issues, clearly, that if someone is feeling that way, we need to look to see why. Part of that was making sure that there are process and procedures. Now we set it up that here’s different ways you can have voices within the organization. And if you have issues, here’s who you go to. Everything that I did, I looked through its DEI as well as restructure. Race, gender, LGBTQ+, disabilities…. we’re going to be doing workshops to speak about it, whether it’s microaggressions, bias, racism. What does that mean to each person, and what will be and won’t be tolerated within the organization. That’s why we also build a code of conduct that everyone will need to sign off on.”
Menzel and Short didn’t directly address Fowler’s exit, but Short added that she would continue to consult for another month to help with the implementation of the group’s reforms. “You can’t go out and fight something or someone’s feeling,” she said. “You have to go in and do the work. So, this relaunch will be the work. That’s the work that Scott has put in for the last two and a half months. It doesn’t come that we’re announcing this and then I’m disappearing. Now, we’ve got to roll it out and maintain the work.”
With Menzel remaining in charge, he is taking the criticism of his management of the organization head-on — while also admitting that the drama over the past year “has had a huge impact on my mental health, on my wife’s mental health. And personally, it really wasn’t until Leslie came on board and did these daily meetings that I was able to move past it.”
Menzel said he is neurodivergent, “and it’s something where I hyper focus on things. And then when something negative happens, it becomes my sole existence. For the past year, I’ve been reliving every single thing in my life… I think a lot of the information that was out there was misinformation. I think it came from the lack of structure, of guidance, and frankly, doing this organization as something that I never envisioned it becoming. I can explain myself to death. But we have to think about the future. And the future was for me to sit back and say, even if ‘x, y and z’ are not true, maybe someone felt some sort of way about it. How do I fix that? To make sure it doesn’t happen again. And that’s what this is all about. It’s fixing and elevating.”
Short added that given that past criticism, “there’s new leadership. So, Scott won’t be a man on the island, trying to figure this out. People are jumping in to help. There is now going to be a vice chair, a head of member engagement. There’s an outside agency that will handle treasury. So, there is a core, true leadership, and then there’ll be an advisory committee of industry insiders. I think that’s one of the biggest things, that there is structure. Where there was a lack of structure. Listen, the light switch is not going to switch and everything’s going to be great. This is going to be a process.”
Next up for the HCA is the HCA Film Awards, which will take place on Jan. 6, 2024, followed by the postponed HCA TV Awards, which have already been voted on, and will be revealed at an event on Jan. 8, 2024. The HCA Creative Awards will take place on Feb. 26, 2024.

Shah Rukh Khan made a rare statement about Sunny Deol during his recent Ask SRK session years after their cold war. On Saturday, the Bollywood superstar hosted another round of his AMA on X, previously known as Twitter, and answered a slew of questions. One of which was about Sunny Deol’s blockbuster film Gadar 2. The film is shattering box office records since the day of its release and is inching close to Pathaan’s lifetime box office collection in India. During the AMA, a fan asked SRK if he watched Gadar 2. The Jawan actor admitted he did and also shared his review. “Gadar 2 dekhi aapne,” a fan asked. Shah Rukh replied, “Yeah loved it!!” Shah Rukh and Sunny have not spoken much about each other, even though they have worked in Darr together. However, this shoutout does make fans happy.
Ananya Panday and Aditya Roy Kapur are headed for another vacay. On Sunday, the Dream Girl 2 star and the Aashiqui 2 actor were seen at the Mumbai airport. The actors, who are rumoured to be dating, were photographed making their way to the airport but opted to arrive separately. Aditya was seen wearing a dark blue checked shirt with a pair of grey coloured pants. He completed his look with a pair of sunglasses and a backpack.
While Shah Rukh Khan prepares for the release of his upcoming film Jawan, it has been reported that protests were staged outside his Mumbai home on Saturday. A video was shared by a paparazzo on Instagram revealed that a team of police officials were deployed outside Mannat, SRK’s house, to ensure safety. But why were people protesting outside Shah Rukh’s home? It is because of a recent ad about online gaming he was a part of.
Months before Janhvi Kapoor’s big Bollywood debut, her mother and veteran actress Sridevi passed away. Janhvi made her film debut with Karan Johar’s Dhadak. However, it has now been revealed that, Karan originally wanted to launch Janhvi Kapoor with the movie Kalank. In fact, he even wanted her mom Sridevi to star opposite her, for which she had ‘reluctantly agreed’.

Hollywood’s hometown Little League team has just completed a dream season.
The El Segundo 12U All Stars defied the odds and went all the way to victory this year’s series. The team battled back from a four-run deficit to beat Curacao 6-5 after a made-for-the-screen walk-off home run delivered by Louis Lappe, one of the team’s star players who emerged over the championship series. The final was held Sunday in Williamsport, Penn.
The Little League World Series is always popular late-summer programming for ESPN, but this time around the entertainment industry has paid more attention because of the local heroes factor. Representing the West division, the scrappy El Segundo team prevailed over more experienced competitors to go all the way.
El Segundo team manager Danny Boehle also gained a media profile during the series with all of his enthusiastic media appearances after his team’s wins.

Despite Steve Rogers’ time in the live-action MCU having passed, a new Marvel Legends figure shed light on the character’s return.
Many fans agree that Steve Rogers, the MCU’s first Captain America, got the happy ending he deserved in Avengers: Endgame, traveling back in time to be with one true love Peggy Carter. However, Marvel Studios’ animated series What If…? introduced a new, alternate take on the star-spangled Avenger.
What If…? brought in a Steve who wore a massive Iron Man-esque armor called the Hydra Stomper and fought with Peggy in World War II. A Hydra Stomper action figure was released by Hasbro in 2021 and now Hasbro has gone back to the well with the character.
As originally teased back in Season 1 of Marvel’s What If…?, Steve Rogers and his Hydra Stomper suit were stored in a state of cryogenic preservation by Hydra on an alternate Earth, separate from the mainline MCU.
As the armor was shrouded in shadow during that first season appearance, fans weren’t really able to get a decent look at the upgraded Hydra Stomper. But the latest series of Hasbro’s popular Marvel Legends action figure line showed off a fresh look at Steve‘s design for What If…? Season 2.
The fully-articulated figure is made to reflect the Hydra Stomper’s look in the upcoming season of What If….? and, as such, could potentially be considered a spoiler.

This Marvel Legends offering is actually a Build-A-Figure, meaning nearly every character in the wave comes packed with a part, be it an arm or a torso, that can be used to assemble the complete Hydra Stomper figure.

A swappable head sculpt featuring an unhelmeted Steve Rogers likeness is included. It’s done in a decidedly animated style, to match the source material, but it does still bear a bit of a resemblance to Chris Evans.

The Marvel Legends Hydra Stomper is scaled appropriately to other figures in the line, so it towers over regular-sized characters.
Below is a comparison between both looks for the armor, with the Season 1 incarnation on the left and Season 2 on the right.

This particular series of Legends also contains a figure of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, however, he does not come with a Build-A-Figure piece.
Right off the bat, it’s unfortunately unknown exactly when Marvel Studios and Disney+ will release the next season of What If…?
It was reportedly originally planned to drop earlier this year but was delayed after Marvel Studios had been rumored to shift its approach and prioritize quality over quantity.
What is known though is that the animated MCU show’s second outing will obviously include more of Steve Rogers and his Hydra Stomper.
Perhaps his story will follow that of Bucky Barnes, meaning Rogers could be brainwashed and even pose a threat to the heroes.
James Gunn’s new DC Universe must avoid several DCEU trends and mistakes that played against DC’s first cinematic universe. The DCEU, as in the continuity of movies and TV shows that began with 2013’s Man of Steel, comes to an end in 2023. Whether the DCEU’s final movie is The Flash or Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom remains to be seen, but the fact is that a new DC universe will begin. James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios are crafting a new franchise that will include movies, TV shows, animated releases, and video games. Superman: Legacy (2025) will be the DCU’s first theatrical movie, introducing a new Superman.
Henry Cavill will not be Superman in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. Likewise, The Brave and the Bold will see a new Batman that is not Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Robert Pattinson, or George Clooney – despite how The Flash ended. Some DCEU characters, such as Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, will return in this new continuity. However, DC Studios’ DC Universe is by all means a reboot that will start a new DC cinematic franchise. Here are 10 DCEU trends that Gunns’s DC Universe needs to avoid.
A successful cinematic universe needs an overarching plan, even if not every single movie and TV show is planned years ahead. Fortunately, DC Studios’ DC Universe slate reveals that this new franchise already has a plan for the future. The DC Universe’s chapter 1 is called “Gods and Monsters” and already includes multiple theatrical movies, live-action shows, and animated series. That said, laying out a plan is not enough. The new DC Universe must avoid the DCEU’s original mistake and stick to its plan. Most of the originally announced DCEU movies either did not happen or were significantly reworked, which may have played against the franchise in the long term.
Every franchise that goes on for several movies will eventually encounter some flops. Major IPs like Transformers, Star Wars, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had a few box office disappointments, which should not always lead to major course corrections. One of the DCEU’s biggest mistakes was drastically changing its plans every time something did not work. For example, the Justice League reshoots made the Batman v Superman sequel significantly different from previous DCEU films in terms of tone. Making adjustments based on how audiences are receiving the DC movies is not a problem, but completely changing plans after a couple of films is a flawed strategy.
Studio interference is part of every blockbuster, even more so when it comes to franchises based on major IPs. From Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever having to be lighter than Tim Burton’s Batman Returns to Justice League (2017) drastically changing the tones of characters like Batman and Superman, DC has a history of course correction caused by studio interference. Even though this is ultimately part of how blockbusters are made, what happened with the DCEU should not happen with the new DC Universe. The franchise that began with Man of Steel saw itself in the middle of behind-the-scenes controversies, leadership changes, and studio restructures that directly affected several of its movies.
Justice League was a box office disappointment that, added to the behind-the-scenes controversies surrounding the movie, caused the DCEU to steer away from the Justice League. However, even though Justice League did not work, the DCEU should have never sidelined its most important heroes. DC Comics is more than Batman and the Justice League, but there cannot be a DC Universe without those characters. Sidelining the Justice League heroes and leaving the fates of characters like Superman and Batman uncertain is a tiresome DCEU trend that the new DC Universe cannot repeat. Interestingly, Gunn’s DC Universe slate currently doesn’t include a Justice League movie.
One of the worst DCEU trends is introducing exciting new characters played by great actors, only for them to never show up again. For example, Birds of Prey introduced Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), yet none of them ever returned for another DCEU project. Similarly, Suicide Squad expanded the DCEU’s canon with characters like Deadshot (Will Smith), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), only for them to never show up anywhere else. The new DC Universe should value returning characters to build a sense of interconnectivity, which the DCEU never truly achieved.
The DCEU’s worst trends contributed to it never gelling like an actual shared universe. Instead, there were many “universes” within the DCEU. For example, the Zack Snyder movies were telling a specific story in what became known as the Snyderverse. The Suicide Squad was a sequel but also a soft reboot to Suicide Squad, and it tied to Peacemaker. The Peacemaker series featured the Justice League, yet it referenced characters and events that were never portrayed in other DCEU movies. Birds of Prey acknowledges Suicide Squad’s Joker but ignores Ben Affleck’s Batman or J.K. Simmons’ Gordon. This is something the new DC Universe must avoid.
Without Justice League sequels or any other type of major crossovers in its slate, the DCEU failed to feel like a shared universe in the long term. Even still, the franchise tried to keep some interconnectivity with a few cameos and namedrops, which did not work. Shazam’s headless Superman scene, the shot from Joker from behind in Birds of Prey, and the Justice League characters played by stand-in actors in Peacemaker were all disappointing cameos that showed how complicated the franchise had become. Likewise, Wonder Woman appearing in Shazam! Fury of the Gods or Barry recalling Justice League adventures that never happened on screen were part of poor world-building.
Henry Cavill’s Superman stayed away from the big screen from 2017’s Justice League to 2022’s Black Adam. Likewise, after appearing in Justice League, Ben Affleck would only return as Batman in 2023’s The Flash. Similarly, five years will have passed since the first Aquaman by the time Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hit theaters. Part of what makes a shared universe like the MCU so interesting is the possibility of revisiting these major heroes regularly. The new DC Universe is set to feature dozens of heroes, but it cannot abandon its most important characters. For example, David Corenswet’s Superman should not appear only in Superman movies.
Black Adam, Shazam 2, and Blue Beetle proved that movies based on lesser-known characters will struggle at the box office if they are not tied to an established franchise. The MCU’s Phase 2 show that, after hits like The Avengers and Iron Man 3, audiences were ready to meet characters most people had never heard of – such as the Guardians of the Galaxy. The DCEU, on the other hand, introduced new heroes like Shazam and Blue Beetle while keeping most of the Justice League heroes away from the big screen. James Gunn’s DC Universe must find a balance between major projects like Superman: Legacy and riskier releases like The Authority.
Summary The new DC Universe must
AMD has announced the next-generation of FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR, with the GPU manufacturer adding its own version of frame generation to the suite of optimization tools.
FSR 3 introduces a frame-generation technique similar to that found in Nvidia’s DLSS 3, but without the requirement to own the latest AMD GPU (or even an AMD GPU at all). Unlike Nvidia’s method, which uses motion vector data from individual frames and utilizes specific optical flow hardware on RTX 40-series cards, AMD leverages software to make up for the missing hardware. The process for injecting synthetic frames in between ones rendered by the game remains the same, but its effectiveness now more heavily relies on how well the underlying game is running.
Since FSR 3 will use software to perform the optical flow calculations, attempting to use frame generation on games already struggling to maintain a relatively high frame rate won’t produce great results, introducing stutter and latency. AMD recommends that a game be running at around 60fps already before trying to apply frame generation on top of that, meaning that it’s gear more towards boosting already good frame rates into much higher territory for high-refresh rate display and not a silver bullet for getting poorly running ones more smoothly. This is also the case with Nvidia’s own frame generation technique, despite its use of dedicated hardware, so it shouldn’t be too surprising.
In addition to frame generation, FSR 3 comes with the same upscaling techniques found in FSR 2, but now with the addition of Native AA. This setting doesn’t render your game at a lower resolution, but instead just applies the same anti-aliasing methods to your native resolution to help overcome games with poorly performing anti-aliasing options. This won’t improve performance alone (it might actually hamper it slightly), but AMD says that in combination with frame generation you can enjoy a much higher quality image with a higher framerate overall.
FSR 3 support will gradually roll out, with Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum being the first titles to feature the suite of options later this year. AMD has announced 10 games that will support FSR 3 in the near future, including Cyberpunk 2077, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Black Myth: Wokong, Starship Troopers: Extermination, and more. Despite being an AMD-promoted title, Bethesda’s Starfield was not on the list. Several developers have also partnered with AMD to support FSR 3 in future titles, including Square Enix, Ubisoft Massive, CD Projekt Red, SEGA, RGG Studio, and others. AMD is also working with Epic Games to incorporate FSR 3 into Unreal Engine 5 for seamless integration with existing projects.
AMD says that frame generation and the entirety of the FSR 3 suite is supported on its latest generation of GPUs, which now includes two mid-range options in the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT. It’s also supported on AMD Radeon cards from the RX 5700 and above. Nvidia’s RTX cards from the 20-series and up are also all supported. For simple super resolution support, AMD says older cards from the Radeon RX 590 and better will be supported, while Nvidia support goes further back to the GTX 10-series of cards.

The live-action remake of Snow White isn’t scheduled for release until March 2024. However, the film is already in the news because of a string of controversies.
The remake of the 1937 classic stars Rachel Zegler in the title role. Zegler being cast drew criticism with many saying a Latina actress doesn’t fit the original description of the princess. But that’s not the only backlash the actress has faced.
Zegler has come under fire for comments about the 1937 version. The remake is taking a more feministic approach, which Zegler is proud of, however, she continuously took digs at the original film. The actress admits to not being a fan of the original movie and implies it was outdated, and in an interview with Extra TV refers to Prince Charming as a stalker.
Aside from Zegler’s casting and comments, the film is receiving criticism about the casting of the seven dwarfs. A photo from the set revealed that the dwarves are made up of a diverse group of actors.
Disney’s decision to create a woke remake of Snow White is being met with mixed reviews. One person who isn’t a fan of the upcoming remake is David Hand, son of the director of the 1937 version.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Hand didn’t hold back on his thoughts on the remake.
“It’s a whole different concept and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it.”
Hand went on to slam Disney for ruining their classic films by trying to keep up with the times.
“Their thoughts are just so radical now. They change the stories, they change the thought process of the characters,…they’re making up new woke things and I’m just not inot any of that. I find it quite frankly a bit insulting [what] they may have done with some of these classic films. There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did.”

The live-action remake of Snow White
The news that Warner Bros. has delayed “Dune: Part Two” to March 2024 means that fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Denis Villeneuve and company return to the world of Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi novels. However, the director is already thinking ahead to his next trip to the planet Arrakis.
In a new interview with Empire, Villeneuve reiterated his long-held hopes to make a trilogy of “Dune” movies. While “Dune: Part Two” will complete the story of the original novel, a potential third film would draw heavily from Herbert’s sequel “Dune Messiah.” The filmmaker explained that subsequent books in the series deconstructed the notion that Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet in the films) was a messianic hero — an idea that Villeneuve is keen to explore in a film.
“If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream,” Villeneuve said. “’Dune Messiah’ was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero. Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”
Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies were billed as a two-part adaptation, so a third film is not guaranteed. But the director revealed that he has already started making plans in the event that “Dune: Part Two” becomes a big enough box office hit to merit another sequel.
“I will say, there are words on paper,” he said.
Regardless of whether a third film materializes, fans will have plenty to look forward to in “Dune: Part Two.” Villeneuve recently appeared at CinemaCon and teased that his sequel is a more “action-packed, epic war movie, much more bulk, much more dance.”
In addition to seeing Zendaya take center stage as Fremen princess Chani after making a brief appearance in “Part One,” the film features franchise newcomers Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux and Christopher Walken along with the returns of Chalamet, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Dave Bautista.
“Dune: Part Two” is now scheduled to open in theaters on March 15, 2024.
The news that Warner Bros. has delayed
Well, this is a bummer.
Disney+ has pulled the plug on its TV adaptation of the Spiderwick Chronicles.
Deadline shared the unfortunate news over the weekend, revealing that all eight episodes had been completed prior to the decision.
That means the show will become like the countless projects scrapped by streaming networks this year, including the Batgirl movie.
The move comes as Disney+ reevaluates its streaming strategy, and Deadline revealed that the series is part of the content write-off announced in May.
Disney+ recently purged countless original series and movies from its platform, including the Willow sequel series.
“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said at the time.
“As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.”
In recent months, Disney+ has canceled several series unrelated to its Star Wars and Marvel franchises.
Most recently, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., got the chop after two seasons.
The Spiderwick Chronicles landed a formal pickup on Disney+ Day in 2021, and production got underway pretty quickly after the announcement.
The silver lining is that the series comes from Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, meaning it can now be shopped to other platforms.
At a time when content is slowly drying out due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the show could find a home pretty quickly.
It will all come down to the terms of a deal and whether platforms believe the brand is worth what is sure to be a hefty price tag.
The cast of the already-filmed series includes Jack Dylan Grazer, Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell, Joy Bryant, Mychala Lee, and Christian Slater.
What are your thoughts on this renew/cancel news?

Emma Seligman’s Bottoms is looking at an estimated weekend gross of $516k on ten screens with a possible leading $51,625 per-theater average for the raunchy, teenage high school girl take on Fight Club.
That’s a win for MGM, its Orion Pictures label and Brownstone Productions, producers on the modestly budgeted ($11.3 million) film written by Seligman and Rachel Sennott. The film skews young and was backed by edgy marketing — ingredients, although never surefire, behind the biggest post-Covid indie film breakouts.
Sunday’s final tally will determine if Bottoms nabs the highest per-screen average post-pandemic on ten or more screens. A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Opened to $50,131 at 10 locations in March of 2022. National Cinema Day, unspooling today, is a wildcard with attendance up but box office dollars limited by $4 tickets and seats available.
Bottoms is playing New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Austin at Alamo Drafthouse cinemas, arthouses including the Angelika and a handful of multiplexes. The Alamo runs are a partnership launched after the film’s buzzy premiere at SXSW. “We fit their profile,” said Kevin Wilson, head of distribution for MGM/Amazon Studios. He sees strong opening numbers at AMC Lincoln Square, Burbank and the Grove boding well as the film expands to 700 screens next week.
Bottoms stars Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri as PJ and Josie, queer high school friends who start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. But the duo find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.
Sennott starred in Seligman’s 2020 indie hit Shiva Baby. Edebiri broke out in The Bear.
“It’s so nice to see these little movies, especially post-pandemic, do well,” said Wilson. “It feels like the marketplace is coming back.” There have been bright spots for sure, he said, but now “you have multiple titles on screens doing business” — from wide releases to smaller indies.
He gave a shoutout to producer and Orion President Alana Mayo for Bottoms, which currently rates a 95% with critics and 100% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Exit polls are above the norm, with women under 25 especially enthusiastic. The opening night audience for this twist on a high school coming of age drama was young, with 86% between 18-34, and 59% LGBTQ+.
Female auds (57%) have driven the most social mentions, and social conversation is indexing highest with LGBTQ+, Millennial, and Gen Z moviegoers. Bottoms has generated over 175K domestic social conversations and 45M+ global video views to date, MGM said. The studio’s theatrical marketing, PR and distribution team sought to match the film’s irreverent tone with digital activations starting with a red-band trailer that quickly generated over 25 million organic views, a media campaign that mixed prestige editorial with digital, lgbtq+ and college press outreach, and aggressive screening program that started during Pride month and included a promotion with Letterbox’d called Fight For Your City (asked fans on the site, in three rounds, which of six cities they’d like for early screenings of Bottoms). The campaign included creative social content on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter as well as robust GIF/Stickers hub pages on Giphy and Tenor.
Other specialty openings: Golda from Bleecker Street, by Guy Nativ and starring Helen Mirren as the iconic Israeli prime minister, is looking at an estimated $1.72 million opening on 883 screens, for a weekend PSA of $1,951. Breakdown: Friday – $782,519; Saturday – $522,677; Sunday – $418,141.
Briarcliff Releasing will see an estimated $2.5+ million for Dennis Quaid-starrer The Hill, by Jeff Celentano, in 1,570 locations for a PTA of $1,602. The true story of baseball phenomenon Rickey Hill, who overcomes his physical disabilities and pastor father’s opposition to fulfill his dream of playing professional baseball, is no. 9 at the domestic box office as per Comscore. The Hill grossed an estimated $830,000 on Saturday, up 3% from $805k Friday (which included $110k from Thursday previews). The distributor is projecting National Cinema Day will provide a 6% bump today.
Music Box Films’ Fremont grossed $16k from limited showtimes at four independent theaters in the San Francisco Bay area. None of the four — the Roxie in San Francisco, the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael, the Rialto Elmwood in Berkeley, and the CineLounge in Fremont — are traditional sites for high-end platform openings, the distributor noted. Fremont, which debuted at Sundance, grossed nearly $10k at the Roxie from only four showtimes. The film by Babak Jalali opens in New York (IFC Center) and Los Angeles (Nuart) next weekend, with a national expansion to follow on Sept. 8.
Greenwich Entertainment doc The Elephant 6 Recording Co. debuted in five theaters including multiple sold out shows at NYC’s IFC Center, and limited screenings in LA, New Orleans, Portland and Dallas, for a weekend gross of $10k and a cume of $14k. Additional regional limited engagements begin next week along with TVOD and DVD.

Donald Trump is facing a total of 91 criminal charges, including 44 federal charges and 47 state charges, but his attorney Alina Habba claims, “We’re not concerned at all.”
“We’re not concerned because we know the facts of these cases, which I can’t get into obviously for privileged reasons,” Alina Habba told host Shannon Bream on Fox News Sunday.
Trump has been indicted four times in the last five months, most recently in Georgia, where he faces charges in the state related to his attempts to interfere with the state’s 2020 election results. Federal prosecutors, meanwhile, have charged him with crimes related to efforts to overturn the election and for stealing classified documents. And in New York, he is being prosecuted for paying “hush money” to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about their alleged affair ahead of the 2016 election.
But according to Habba, all of these cases are mere political ploys, part of a “coordinated effort” among prosecutors to thwart Trump’s 2024 campaign. “I can tell you that it’s to tie him up. It’s definitely political,” Habba said. “They intentionally waited years and years and years for something that happened to bring it now when he is the leading candidate for the Republican Party.”
“There’s very much a coordinated effort,” Habba added. “And if you ever doubted it, think about how [Fulton County prosecutor] Fani [Willis] when she was asked at her press conference if she was coordinating with Jack Smith in D.C. and the government couldn’t give us a yes or no. That says it all.”
When Bream asked how Habba is prepping Trump to testify in these cases, the attorney again played nonchalant, saying he doesn’t need much prep at all.
“If it was a normal person, honestly Shannon, I could understand the concern,” Habba said. “President Trump is not your average person. He’s incredibly intelligent and he knows the ropes. He also knows the facts because he lived them. These are not complicated facts.”
Habba continued, “What is he going to have to be prepped for? The truth? You don’t have to prep much when you’ve done nothing wrong. So that I’m not concerned with.”
In addition to facing criminal charges, Trump is also facing other trials slated for later this year and early 2024, including a defamation suit brought by E. Jean Carroll and a federal class action suit alleging the Trump family promoted a pyramid scheme on The Apprentice and at business conventions.

CINEQUEST FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! Director Rachel Lambert’s low-key yet compelling drama Sometimes I Think About Dying serves as a formidable showcase for the acting talents of Daisy Ridley. Normally, an indie gem like this comes before the discovery of an actor and then propels them to stardom and big-budget fare. In Ridley’s unconventional case, however, she was thrust into the largest cinematic franchise of all time with next-to-no features on her resume. But now, the opportunity to truly display what she’s capable of has arrived. It’s an earnest movie with humble ambitions, but Ridley single-handedly turns it into something special.
Ridley plays Fran, who leads the quietest of lives in a small coastal town. The weather’s perpetually gray, its cacophony of seagulls incessant. Fran follows a bleak routine: arriving at the office every weekday to spend it listening to – never participating in – all the inconsequential small talk. She likes to imagine herself dead, her body sprawled in the woods or amongst logs on the beach. Her visions are as romanticized as they are dour.
One day, the outwardly happy-go-lucky Robert (Dave Merheje) arrives to replace a former coworker. Fran finds herself engaging in conversation with him, on IM at first, then in person. He infiltrates her vaguely suicidal visions. Fran agrees to go to the movies with Robert. This turns into a date, which turns into more. Of course, inevitable complications arise as his past surfaces, and her impenetrability becomes a factor.

“Fran agrees to go to the movies with Robert.”
Writers Stefanie Abel Horowitz, Kevin Armento, and Katy Wright-Mead elegantly handle the deeply minimalist story at the core of Sometimes I Think About Dying. The dialogue between the most introverted person anyone could imagine and a hard extrovert is both tender and a little awkward and resonates. It’s tough to name a standout sequence in a motion picture that doesn’t aim to necessarily have one. Yet, it would probably be a tie between a “murder game” at a party that involves cracking crabs and a touching conversation between Fran and a heartbroken retiree named Carol (Marcia DeBonis) at a café.
Daisy Ridley is splendid. “Hi, I’m Fran. I like cottage cheese,” her mousy character introduces herself at an office meeting. Little, if anything, is revealed about her, but the actor imbues the role with just a spark of trauma, as well as a growing eagerness to embrace things outside her morbid little comfort zone. Dave Merheje provides a welcome contrast, an infusion of joie de vivre and humanity that prove irresistible. They play off each other better than you can imagine.
Sometimes I Think About Dying sublimely portrays the monotony/minutiae of cubicle life. Lambert and her team emphasize the importance of human connection, living each day as if it were your last. These themes may not be novel. The narrative may prove a bit indeterminate and slow-moving to jaded audiences. Yet it remains an incisive and unusual little tale, which we could certainly use more of these days. That is something I personally think about all the time.
Sometimes I Think About Dying screened at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and the 2023 Cinequest Film Festival.

Fire crews in Kelowna, B.C., rushed to the 100 block of Gray Road around 6:30 Sunday morning, after a fire broke out at the Rutland Health Centre.
Kelowna Fire Department Capt. Mike Brownlee says the fire, which is believed to have started on the outside of the building, has been deemed suspicious.
“There was no source of ignition out here, so we don’t know exactly how it started, and we don’t have a person that was on camera, but RCMP are investigating,” said Brownlee.
Brownlee added that while damage to the building’s exterior was minimal, the basement sustained extensive damage.
“There’s a lot of extensive damage down there. IH (Interior Health), I’ve talked with them, and they have a lot of supplies down there, so it got into that,” said Brownlee.
“A lot of water damage downstairs and heavy smoke damage to the upstairs of the structure.”
No one was injured as a result of the fire, meanwhile Brownlee added IH will likely be displaced from the building for up to a week.
The Kelowna Fire Department responded to the blaze with three units, a rescue, and a platoon captain vehicle.

It’s official: Adam Driver, Caleb Landry Jones, Mads Mikkelsen and Jessica Chastain are among the stars set to attend the upcoming Venice Film Festival.
Following multiple unsourced reports, the festival has confirmed that Driver is expected on the Lido’s red carpet to promote Micheal Mann’s “Ferrari,” in which he plays the titular character, Italian car racing pioneer Enzo Ferrari; Landry Jones is coming for Luc Besson’s “Dogman”; Mikkelsen will make the trek for Danish director Nikolaj Arcel’s “The Promised Land” and Chastain for Mexican auteur Michel Franco’s “Memory,” her first role since her Oscar-winning performance in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
Also expected on the Lido are Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, who play Priscilla and Elvis Presley in Sophia Coppola’s “Priscilla.” as well as Priscilla Presley herself.
All the above films have obtained SAG-AFTRA interim waivers since they are indie productions that have not been produced by AMPTP members.
However, according to Italian news agency ANSA Kiefer Sutherland is also likely to be on the Lido to pay homage to the late William Friedkin’s last film, legal drama “The Caine Mutiny Court Martial,” despite the fact that it is produced by Showtime and Paramount Global, which is an AMPTP member.
Meanwhile, the Venice party scene has been only slightly impacted by the SAG-AFTRA strike, with just one cancellation of an Armani event that revolved around Cate Blanchett.
As announced by Variety, Ava DuVernay – whose drama “Origin,” inspired by Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” will mark the first work by an African American woman director to be in the Venice competition – will be honored by international AIDS organization amfAR with its Award of Inspiration during a gala dinner that will include performances by singers Rita Ora and Leona Lewis. But it’s still not certain whether the film’s stars, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Niecy Nash-Betts, Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga will be attending the festival.
Venice’s upcoming 80th edition runs Aug. 30-Sept. 9.

Armored Core 6: Fire of Rubicon is off to a mechtastic start, racking up over 156,000 concurrent players in its debut weekend, making it the fifth biggest launch of 2023 and FromSoftware’s best launch weekend ever, second only to the mighty Elden Ring.
According to SteamDB (via GameRant), Armored Core 6 was Steam’s ninth-most-played game of the last 24 hours, meaning it attracted more players this weekend than blockbuster titles like FIFA 23, Rainbow Six Siege, and Team Fortress 2.
Exclude Capcom Arcade, this one should be 5th. It may surpass and become 4th tomorrow, just not today. 1. Hogwarts Legacy 879k2. Baldur’s Gate 3 875k3. Sons of the Forest 414k4. Resident Evil 4 168k5. Armored Core VI 150kAugust 25, 2023
Of all the games released in 2023 thus far, only Resident Evil 4, Sons of the Forest, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Hogwarts Legacy sport higher concurrent launch peaks and, of course, that number doesn’t account for the thousands of players getting stuck in on console, too.
As for how it compares with other FromSoft titles? According to Okami Games and SteamDB, Armored Core 6 goes straight into silver place with 150K simultaneous players, with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Dark Souls 3 racking up 125K and 129K respectively.
Wondering if it lives up to the hype? We gave the mechtastic Armored Core 6 three out of five stars, praising its responsive and satisfying combat, deep mech customization, and exciting and varied missions. However, the our Armored Core 6 review says the mech game falls short with unsatisfying set piece boss encounters and the “jarring inclusion of soulsborne mechanics”.
“Armored Core 6: Fire of Rubicon offers slick and well-polished mech battling fundamentals, diluted by the inclusion of ill-fitting soulsborne mechanics that don’t compliment the mech pilot fantasy,” we wrote in the review.
“Though there’s much to enjoy for fans of the series, newcomers will be met with a lopsided experience that doesn’t quite capture the full potential of the Armored Core series.”

It seemed like she might never really get here. But flight delays, lost luggage and the solemn observance of a national day of mourning for the victims of a raw recent tragedy in the middle of the Sarajevo Film Festival could not, in the end, keep great Scottish director Lynne Ramsay from coming to the city for the first time, and falling for it hard. In town to receive the Heart of Sarajevo award, which she described with real awe as “a huge honor,” Ramsay also presented her brilliant 2017 film “You Were Never Really Here.”
In her Variety Lounge interview, Ramsay was terrific company, revealing details of her many upcoming projects, including “Die My Love” with Jennifer Lawrence, which is a comedy — to Ramsay anyway. “It’s about mental health…and the breakdown of a marriage. But it’s really f—ing funny. At least I think it’s funny… But I’m Glaswegian, so I’ve a really black sense of humor.”
Also in the pipeline there’s Margaret Atwood adaptation “Stone Mattress” with Sandra Oh and Julianne Moore attached, as well as an original screenplay — her first since her debut “Ratcatcher” — which is earmarked for Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. “I just absolutely love actors,” she maintained, citing the close friendships she has with all of her past leads, and even mentioning a new project with “Morvern Callar” star Samantha Morton, which will be a music video for Morton’s upcoming debut album.
Ramsay also took time to spool back through her formative years at film school: “I knew how to take a still, I could do lovely lighting, but I didn’t really know how to move the camera… my first dolly shot was the worst dolly shot you’ve ever seen.” But she’d only turned to film because a disastrous interview put paid to her ambition to study Fine Art and Photography at St Martins College. “I’d a terrible interview with this guy that took these really kind of lewd nudes. I hated his work. And I think he hated me.” Film school itself was not without its sacrifices: “I’d applied really last minute. And my boyfriend at the time had been waiting and waiting to go to film school as a cinematographer. And then he didn’t get in and I did, and that was the end of the relationship.”
20-odd years and four dazzlingly disparate features later, it’s safe to say Ramsay has worked out how to move the camera, among many other skills. “I just was interested in the whole combination of what it takes to make a film.” She learned from editors, cinematographers, documentarians, animators and perhaps that omnivorous curiosity is what separates her from certain film-school peers who “thought they were bloody Fellini in their first year.” She rolls her eyes eloquently. “I’ve never heard of them again.”
It seemed like she might never really
Not long after the Berlin Wall fell, in 1989, Leonard Bernstein traveled to the once-divided German city and led a performance of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” replacing the word “Freude,” or joy, with “Freiheit” — freedom.
In an echo of that historic concert, the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, a touring ensemble formed in the early months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, presented Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in the suburbs of Berlin on Thursday. And, for the famous “Ode to Joy” choral finale, the text was translated to Ukrainian, with the key word being “slava,” or glory, as in “Slava Ukrainii”: Glory to Ukraine.
“I’m driven by my passion for Ukraine,” the orchestra’s conductor, Keri-Lynn Wilson, said on Thursday afternoon before the concert, at the garden of Schönhausen Palace. “And my desire to get rid of Putin and his regime through culture.”
Around her was a bustle of activity: ushers laying pillows on chairs, sound technicians consulting in a booth, pink umbrellas being placed to shield an orchestra from the sun. The orchestra, made up of 74 Ukrainian musicians — some of whom live in that country still, some of whom have fled — was about to perform as part of its second summer tour of Europe.
“Russia says there’s no Ukrainian culture, or music, or language,” said Anna Bura, a violinist in the orchestra. “They want to erase Ukrainian culture. We want to show people we are here.”
The program included the second violin concerto by the contemporary Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych, and ended with the Beethoven. While on vacation three weeks ago, Wilson arrived at the idea that the “Ode to Joy” should be sung in Ukrainian, and worked with Mykola Lukas and the vocal coach Ivgeniia Iermachkova to create a new singing translation of the Friedrich Schiller text.
The orchestra’s stop in Berlin coincided with Ukrainian Independence Day. Kyrylo Markiv, a violinist in the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, helped rehearse the choir, the Ukrainian Freedom Chorus, which was assembled for the occasion from the Diplomatic Choir of Berlin and other singers. He serves as a first-desk violinist in the Odesa Philharmonic and is choirmaster at the Transfiguration Cathedral in Odesa, which was built in the early 19th century, reconstructed between 1999 and 2003 and then damaged last month by Russian airstrikes.
The night the cathedral was bombed, Markiv had left his violin there in preparation for a concert the next day. “My colleagues wrote in a work chat that the building was on fire,” he said. “I got dressed and went with my brother, who is a deacon there, and saw destroyed cars, fire. In the building, I looked for my violin. Everything was destroyed, but my violin was about 80 percent OK.”
Now, his violin is being repaired by a luthier in Lviv. The attack, he said, strengthened his resolve for the tour. “I’m proud that we came to show our art,” he said. “These times are hard for us. We’re strong, and the European people make us stronger.”
Peter Gelb, the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera in New York and Wilson’s husband, helped to arrange and raise money for this tour and the one last summer. “The intensity of the war has raised the stakes this year,” he said. “These musicians all live there or have families there. The war makes everything more intense: their playing, their relationships with each other. Everything is magnified.”
At a rehearsal on Thursday, as Wilson led the orchestra into a breakneck run-through of the Beethoven’s second movement, the two first-desk bass players, Nazarii Stets and Ivan Zavgorodniy, bounced along to the rhythm with broad smiles on their faces. Stets, who lives in Kyiv, said in an interview that this summer’s tour was less celebratory than he had hoped: “I expected it would be the victory tour, and it’s still a tour with continuous fighting.”
A member of the Kyiv Camerata, a chamber orchestra that plays contemporary Ukrainian music, he had a solo recital scheduled on the day after the invasion began.
“My bass was already at the concert hall,” Stets said. “I spent the night in my house, and then the war started.” After two months with his family in the west of the country, he returned to Kyiv. Since then, he has played in “a lot of charity and benefit concerts,” he said — mostly for the Music Unites charity fund, which donates medicine and food to children, and cars and communications equipment to soldiers.
Many musicians have used their art to raise money. The cellist Denys Karachevtsev now lives in Berlin but spent the first year of the war in his hometown, Kharkiv, the site of vicious fighting at the beginning of the conflict. More than 600,000 residents fled that city as Russian shells and rockets destroyed homes and public buildings. A video he recorded of Bach’s fifth cello suite among the ruins garnered attention and donations.
But music, Karachevtsev said, was just one part of his efforts. “I had my car,” he added, “so I was evacuating people and taking them to the trains, bringing back medicine and food. We didn’t know how the situation would go on.”
The videos brought him to the attention of the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, which invited him to participate this year. “I think it’s a good way to continue helping our country,” he said. Now, Karachevtsev is studying in Berlin while continuing to teach students in Kharkiv online. It is still considered too dangerous to have in-person lessons. “The nearest Russian city is about 50 kilometers away,” he said. “It takes 30 seconds for the bombs to come.”
As the sun began to set in Berlin, the orchestra ate dinner. Dignitaries, including Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeev, and the German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, arrived as audience members began to file in for the free concert. Some sat in the chairs, and others spread out picnic blankets. Children ate ice cream; the atmosphere was warm and friendly.
Some people wore Ukrainian flags and some a vyshyvanka, a traditional embroidered blouse. Viktoria Neroda, who arrived in Berlin as a refugee from Rivne in western Ukraine last year, said she was there primarily to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day. “I love Ukrainian music,” she said in a German-language interview, “but I’m hearing this orchestra for the first time tonight.”
This tour’s performances are taking place at an uneasy moment for Ukrainians. The war has dragged on far longer than many expected, and hopes for a quick victory, heightened by the success of Ukrainian self-defense early on, have faded. Life is lived between air raid sirens. Every week brings more bad news: friends killed fighting on the front, family members’ homes destroyed by drone strikes or rocket attacks.
European solidarity, too, is shifting. Berlin is 10 hours by train from Przemysl, the Polish city near the Ukrainian border where, in the war’s first weeks, refugees poured in.
Berlin citizens swung into action: operating welcome centers, bringing supplies to train stations, offering rooms in their apartments. Governments announced special visa rules for Ukrainian refugees. German lawmakers spoke of a “Zeitenwende,” an epochal change in German defense policy, and sent, if sometimes reluctantly, weapons and tanks to the Ukrainian army.
At the Berlin State Opera, the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko withdrew under pressure from a new production of Puccini’s “Turandot” because she had not, the house stated, adequately distanced herself from the invasion. She had said that she opposed the war, but didn’t go as far as criticizing the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin, whom she had supported in the past.
Solidarity is still visible, but it is also beginning to splinter. Many Germans, struggling with inflation, fuel bills and the country’s economic stagnation, are questioning the price of support. The far-right Alternative for Germany party, which has been sympathetic to Putin, has surged in the polls. And classical music stages, where Russia was long a moneymaking destination, have also wavered. As the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra rehearsed last week, Netrebko was set to start rehearsals for a revival of Verdi’s “Macbeth” at the State Opera in September. (The company’s leader, Matthias Schulz, told Berlin public radio this year that Netrebko had spoken out, in his opinion, as far as she was able.)
Thursday’s concert, then, was both a celebration of Ukraine’s independence and Germany’s solidarity, and part of an effort to preserve those two things. After speeches from the dignitaries, the orchestra launched into energetic, insistent Verdi, followed by a searing account of the Stankovych concerto. That piece ends with a sustained, harmonious major third in the strings, which clashes with the solo violin’s plucked minor third. The dissonance holds, softly, then fades out.
Not long after the Berlin Wall fell,
The 2021 comedy “Vacation Friends” had a premise so thin that it scarcely counts as high concept: One couple befriends another couple on holiday, only to realize that the other couple is a little too wild. It worked, just barely, because the couples were played by Lil Rel Howery, Yvonne Orji, Meredith Hagner and John Cena, all of them funny and charming with bubbly, upbeat chemistry. The story of clashing personalities and adventures gone wrong was dull and uninspired, but the cast members, clearly enjoying themselves, kept things brisk and mildly entertaining.
That cast returns for “Vacation Friends 2,” a perfunctory sequel with an even duller story. (The first movie’s director, Clay Tarver, returns too.) Howery and Orji, as the timid newlyweds Marcus and Emily, are off on another holiday with their kooky friends Ron and Kyla (Cena and Hagner), this time at a luxury resort in the Caribbean. They’re joined by Kyla’s father, Reese (Steve Buscemi), a squirrelly man with a criminal past whose approval Ron desperately seeks, and by Yeon (Ronny Chieng), a testy owner of the resort, with whom Marcus hopes to land a business deal.
Marcus’s efforts to woo Yeon, as well as Ron’s campaign to win over his skeptical father-in-law, are nothing more than glorified sitcom plots, and as the harried friends careen across the resort through a series of comical mishaps, the movie has the feel of a TV rerun. More compelling are the too-rare moments of plotless leisure, when the charismatic holidaymakers guzzle rum, snort cocaine and just riff. Cena manages to squeeze a very funny bit from the action of picking up a brunch menu — no artificial dramatic stakes necessary.

James Gunn, who previously worked closely with Marvel to develop the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy, was reportedly not involved with an upcoming Guardians-focused project.
The Guardians of the Galaxy, those lovable spacefaring misfits, owe much of their mainstream popularity to one man: James Gunn.
Of course, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel Studios had significant parts to play in making the group a household name, but the fact of the matter remains: when fans think of the Guardians, they think of Gunn.
But Gunn was fairly recently made co-CEO of DC Studios, making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 his final project with Marvel. And so, it wouldn’t necessarily come as much of a shock that any future MCU Guardians stories would be made without his involvement.
Season 2 of the quirky series of Marvel shorts, I Am Groot, has been announced to arrive on Disney+ on Wednesday, September 6. In the official production brief, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn’s name was nowhere to be found, indicating that I Am Groot’s sophomore run was made without his involvement.
In contrast, Gunn was listed as an executive producer in the production brief for Season 1 of the streaming show, which arrived last year.
This makes I Am Groot the first Marvel Studios-created MCU project led by a Guardians of the Galaxy to not either produced or directed by James Gunn, who turned the galactic misfits into a household name with the Guardians trilogy he wrote and directed.
I Am Groot Season 2 also marks the first installment of the MCU to be released after James Gunn officially dove into his duties at DC Studios. On every other MCU project that featured the Guardians, he had some level of input. For example, Taika Waititi consulted him on the script for 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
For reference’s sake, here’s the crew breakdown for I Am Groot Season 2
As brief as I Am Groot Season 2 will be, one must wonder if James Gunn’s absence can be felt in the finished product.
Then again, it’s also something of a question of exactly how much say Gunn had in Season 1 of the series. Even as a producer on I Am Groot’s first season, Gunn implied that he didn’t entirely see the show as “part of the Guardians saga,” despite others’ claims to the contrary.
So perhaps his lack of a sense of ownership over those episodes is a clue that he didn’t have much of a role behind the scenes?
Gunn stated on numerous occasions that he’s done with the MCU for the time being. Any new Guardians of the Galaxy story would be made by a different filmmaker and wouldn’t center on Peter Quill’s incarnation of the team.
It remains to be seen if the Guardians (likely the roster led by Rocket, as set up in Guardians 3’s mid-credits scene) will appear in something like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. But given their enduring popularity, it certainly feels like Marvel will put them in another future project.
All five episodes of Marvel Studios’ I Am Groot Season 2 will drop on Disney+ on Wednesday, September 6
Warning: this article contains SPOILERS for Blue Beetle.
Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto has chosen who he would love to see take on the role of original Blue Beetle Ted Kord in a potential sequel: Ted Lasso star and Emmy Award winner Jason Sudeikis. Speaking with The Digital Fix, Soto revealed that Sudeikis has long been his number one choice for the role of Ted Kord, though what matters most to him is finding the best actor for the role.
“My dream cast for Ted Kord has always been Jason Sudeikis. But at the end of the day, it’s about who’s best for the character, who loves what we’re trying to do. And who’s willing to see Jaime Reyes’ story continue.”
With his hit sitcom Ted Lasso now seemingly coming to an end, Jason Sudeikis is free to join the ever-growing franchise of the DCU should he so choose. And thus making Soto’s dreams come true and becoming another Ted.
Created by comic book legend Steve Ditko, Theodore Stephen “Ted” Kord first appeared way back in 1966 and was the second person to take on the Blue Beetle mantle. A genius-level inventor (possibly even more intelligent than Batman) and a gifted athlete, Ted fought crime without superpowers, and would no doubt make a great addition to the DCU.
Be warned, SPOILERS lie ahead, as one of the major plot points in Blue Beetle regards the whereabouts of Ted Kord, who once fought crime as the Blue Beetle despite not being able to use the technological wonders of the Scarab. While we never see Ted Kord in the movie, the final moments of Blue Beetle hint that he will make an appearance in the future, as a post-credits scene teases his arrival in a possible sequel.
So, would you like to see Jason Sudeikis suit up as Blue Beetle?
The first Blue Beetle introduces audiences to recent college grad Jaime Reyes, who returns home full of aspirations for his future only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.
A sequel to Blue Beetle is sadly looking less and less likely, as the movie has struggled at the box office. Soto himself has said that Blue Beetle 2 is reliant on whether the first outing makes money, but has always viewed the project as the first chapter in a franchise.
“But for us, we’ve always seen it that way… We love the story so much,” he said recently. “We believe in the product so much. We believe in an actor so much. We couldn’t help but think about where his journey was going to go while we were creating this film… So, is it wish fulfillment? Are we calling it out to the universe? Sure.”
Blue Beetle is out now in theaters.

Time was, Hollywood filmmakers would regularly travel to China in support of their movies, attending premieres and holding Q&As to drum up buzz in the massive box office market. The pandemic halted that ritual — until this week when Christopher Nolan became the first major Hollywood filmmaker since Covid to stroll a red carpet in China as his Oppenheimer was premiered at Universal Studios’ CityWalk IMAX theater in Beijing, followed by a stop in Shanghai for more screenings and fan interaction.
Such was the event that the day after the Beijing premiere, the state-backed Global Times gushed that Nolan “set hearts racing … as he became the first prominent figure from the Hollywood film industry to visit Hollywood’s largest overseas market, the Chinese mainland, after the pandemic.” (It’s worth noting that Ben Wheatley was also recently in China for the unveiling of Warner Bros’ Meg 2: The Trench, which is a Chinese coproduction.)
From the Oppenheimer Beijing show, video on Weibo saw fans “clutching posters” featuring Nolan’s previous works like Inception, Interstellar and Tenet, the Global Times reported. The premiere also ignited discussions on social media, with Weibo trending topics including #Oppenheimer, #OppenheimerChinaPremiere, #NolanSigningPostersForFans. According to sources, the film has generated over 50 million views on the Weibo platform alone. The Maoyan want-to-see number also sharply increased. The film currently leads presales through next Sunday.
Oppenheimer is set for release on August 30 in China where Nolan’s films have a strong track record. It was the No. 1 offshore market on 2010’s Inception, No. 2 on 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, and tops for 2014’s Interstellar and 2020’s Tenet.
Special screenings of Oppenheimer for students from Peking University and the China Film Academy were also held this week with Nolan in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. The filmmaker then traveled to Shanghai for additional screenings as Nolan conducted Q&As with students from FuDan University and the Shanghai Theater Academy.
While China’s borders have been open for about six months, we’ve not seen a pre-pandemic level influx of talent. At the same time, although authorities have been freer in general with release dates for Hollywood movies, audiences have also been very high on local titles and tepid on U.S. films.
So, is Nolan’s trip a sign of things to come?
USC professor and China expert Stanley Rosen muses that “Hollywood studios see the Chinese market as a nice bonus, but no longer essential for success.” This has been true for some time given the unreliability of the market and its gatekeepers. Still, there is wistfulness over those sky-high 2012-2019 grosses. Could traveling talent help claw back some ground?
Rosen thinks geopolitics is playing a part, suggesting that recently there has been a combination of factors keeping folks from traveling to China, “starting with the state of U.S.-China relations and the widespread criticism of Hollywood in and out of Congress that Hollywood is pandering to China and helping it launder its image around the world.”
Hollywood, Rosen says, “is always concerned about PR, and promoting itself in China may seem like bad PR in the current environment.” However, he believes that issue could be overcome if Hollywood films were still doing well in China.” But with the shift in the market during and after the pandemic, “no recent blockbuster, assuming it even got into China, has matched its predecessor… Getting to China and navigating around China is much more complicated than it used to be.”
Check back this week for updates on Oppenheimer‘s performance in the market.

Plot twist! Keke Palmer spent her 30th birthday with Darius Jackson following breakup reports. To be fair, Jackson is the father of the Big Boss singer’s six-month-old son, but last we heard, the pair had reportedly split after the fitness instructor publicly shamed his then-girlfriend over the sheer dress she wore to an Usher concert in early July.
Following significant online backlash, the situation escalated when Jackson doubled down on his bad take while Palmer appeared to dismiss his statements with clever Instagram captions and merch. Earlier this month, Palmer seemed to put a cap on the drama by starring in the music video for Usher’s new track, “Boyfriend,” which includes the lyric, “Somebody said that your boyfriеnd’s lookin’ for me/Oh, that’s cool, that’s cool/Well he should know I’m pretty easy to find/Just look for me wherever he sees you.”
However, it appears this story isn’t over yet. On August 26, Jackson took Palmer out for drinks to celebrate her 30th birthday and streamed the outing on Instagram Live. “D, thank you for taking me out on my birthday as always,” Palmer said to Jackson in a clip shared by Pop Crave. “I mean, it’s not always my birthday but you always do take me out. But I just thank you for making it special for my birthday, that’s so sweet.”
While discussing her zodiac sign (Palmer is a Virgo), Jackson even appeared to refer to the Nope star as his “partner in crime.” Of course, the pair could be maintaining a close friendship amid their alleged breakup, but both parties kept the conversation pretty ambiguous. “Get into the Virgos and admit that Virgos are the one,” Palmer joked. “It’s already too late, your Virgo already has you hooked.”

Denis Villeneuve still wants to explore the world of Arrakis after “Dune: Part Two.”
In a recent interview with Empire, the director shared his hopes for a third installment in the sci-fi epic film series, saying, “If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream.”
On his plans for “Dune: Part Three,” Villeneuve teased, “I will say, there are words on paper.”
“Dune: Part Three” would be based on “Dune Messiah,” the direct sequel to “Dune” author Frank Herbert’s 1965 original novel. Herbert wrote five sequels in total, including “Children of Dune” and “God Emperor of Dune.” Following Herbert’s death in 1986, his son Brian published several prequel novels and sequels in the “Dune” universe.
“’Dune Messiah’ was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero,” Villeneuve explained. “Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of ‘Dune’] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”
Villeneuve revealed that if his adaptation of “Messiah” does happen, the third film would be his last in the “Dune” franchise. “After that the books become more… esoteric,” he said.
On the horizon, Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” will continue the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he teams up with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen to exact revenge on those who destroyed his family. In addition to Chalamet and Zendaya, the “Dune: Part Two” cast includes Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Lea Seydoux and more.
The sequel has been delayed to March 15, 2024, due to the ongoing dual strikes.

How does one make a documentary about David Bowie, a prolific musician who frequently reinvented himself as a performer, sound great? That was the challenge facing the Emmy-nominated sound crew behind Brett Morgen’s “Moonage Daydream.”
“He’s a unique artistic genius,” points out re-recording mixer David Giammarco. “How do you do something like we’ve never seen before?”
Giammarco worked with fellow nominee Paul Massey and Morgen, writer-director-editor-producer on the documentary, to navigate their way through telling Bowie’s story. Morgen’s vision was not to use talking heads or a narrator.
Instead, he tells the story through archival footage made up of clips, interviews and performances.
Essentially, Bowie is telling his own story in the documentary. And it’s not a conventional bio either; rather, Morgen takes audiences on a musical odyssey. The director spent four years on his assemble and edit. It took another 18 months to construct the ambitious soundtrack.
The film’s soundtrack needed to be mixed in a number of formats including Imax 12.0 and 5.0, Dolby Atmos, 7.1 and 5.1 theatrical as well as Home Atmos 5.1 and stereo.
That was one of the many challenges the team faced: Both the dialogue and music presented itself in a vast array of quality, and it was up to them to make it audible. On “Heroes,” they had access to the 24-track original, but a few tracks needed work.
One such example was Bowie’s 1974 song “Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me,” from “Diamond Dogs.” “It came in at the last minute,” Massey recalls. “It was a two-track, but worse than that, it was a Betacam Superior Performance recording.” While the resolution was enhanced for the time, the quality was mono. “It was horrible.” But it was all they had, “so we made the most of it. We opened it up and turned it into a 7.1 sound mix.”
Bowie’s 1995 song “Hello Spaceboy” features in the film in one of Massey’s favorite sequences. “It was recorded in Tel Aviv, Israel, and David is talking about chaos and how much he loves it and how it shouldn’t be ignored. This recording is so raw. His performance is just punky and full-on, and the band is going crazy, he’s going crazy and the audience is going crazy. So we had a very distorted track.”
While it wasn’t the highest quality audio-wise because of distortion, the team was still able to make it work. “It actually ended up fitting the moment and the emotion of where Brett wanted the audience to be at that moment.”
Giammarco says the sound design and music during this moment illustrates how the two integrate in the documentary. “That particular song is greater than anywhere else in the film,” he says. “The sound design happening is commenting on what’s happening in the scene, but there are sound effects and music, and it’s hard to tell the difference, but it’s musical chaos and artistic chaos.”
Ultimately, “Moonage Daydream” is a visually immersive experience for fans and non-fans alike. And what began as a blank canvas ended up coming together as Massey, Giammarco and Morgen spent time experimenting. “In one sequence, you have a snippet of 1970 Bowie going into 1984 Bowie into 1991 Bowie before leading into ‘Heroes,’” Giammarco notes. “That’s how the music side worked.
“And then there’s dialogue and sound effects, which was a vast template of things,” he continues. “We went through everything and seeing what worked and simply trying things out.”

It has been an anxious summer in Burbank, Bristol and the rest of the Disney–ESPN empire thanks to ongoing cutbacks, movie box office disappointments and strategic uncertainties. Disney stock recently sank to a nine-year low.
Help is on the way, though, as the U.S. Open Tennis Championships kick off Monday and college football and the NFL also deliver their annual fall injections of must-see live events.
While football’s benefits are well-documented, the U.S. Open has more quietly become an annual late-summer highlight for ESPN, which began exclusive carriage of it in 2015. This year’s tournament will follow last year’s burst of momentum, as the average of 1.2 million viewers on ESPN and ESPN2 delivered the biggest audience since 2019. Total viewership increased 50% among all viewers and 62% among 18-to-49-year-olds.
The upswing caught the attention of ad buyers, and inventory for the two-week tournament has been sold out for months. More than 20 sponsors and nearly 150 advertisers have come aboard across 75 categories, both in linear and digital. Of the 20 sponsors, 14 are official sponsors of the United States Tennis Association, the biggest overlap yet between the media company and the tournament’s presenting organization, according to Disney Advertising.
“The remarkable range of marquee sponsorships and sellout of advertising inventory underscores the unparalleled appeal and reach of this iconic tournament,” Adam Monaco, EVP Sales, Disney Advertising, said in a press release. “By elevating the fan experience across both linear and digital platforms, in collaboration with our brand partners, we are setting new standards of innovation and excitement, all while delivering access to world-class tennis.”
It helps, of course, that the narrative of both men’s and women’s professional tennis in recent years has been consistently fascinating. Novak Djokovic has outdueled longtime rivals Roger Federer (now retired) and Rafael Nadal (out this year with a knee injury) to reach 23 career major titles, one shy of the all-time record. Serena Williams also won 23 majors before ending her remarkable run with a third-round loss at last year’s Open. Her farewell in primetime drew 4.6 million viewers, a record for any tennis match in ESPN’s 43-year history.
New blood has also come in to the sport, with 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz winning his first major at the 2022 U.S. Open and then upsetting Djokovic at Wimbledon in July. Coco Gauff, 19, made the women’s quarterfinals last year in Queens and enters this year’s tournament on a hot streak.
More than 260 hours of Open coverage are planned on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN Deportes, with more than 550 matches on ESPN+ and ESPN3. ABC for the first time will air the tournament live on September 3, with a slate of matches in the Round of 16. Dual network primetime coverage is slated for August 29-30, with ESPN focused on Arthur Ashe Stadium and ESPN on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Even though the Billie Jean King Tennis Center is in the outer borough of Queens, it still draws a healthy mix of notable attendees. Ben Stiller, Kendall Jenner, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anne Hathaway were among those spotted attending last year. Many fans, whether in person or at home, are seduced by the sheer unpredictability of tennis, which doesn’t have a set timetable. Many matches go late into the New York night, with crowds famous for their raucous energy compared with more genteel environments for the sport. En route to last year’s title, Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in a quarterfinal match ending at 2:50 a.m., the latest finish in tournament history.
Asked during a media conference call how he prepares for late nights and long hours, ESPN analyst John McEnroe shrugged, “We’re backseat drivers, which is a pretty good gig, so we have the easy job. But the only thing that’s important, I think, is to keep up some energy, obviously, and so you just do that.”
Fellow commentator Chris Evert said one plus is that on-air talent generally isn’t asked to handle morning matches if they have been up past midnight. “ESPN paces us, which is good,” she said.

It’s a nail-biter at the box office.
Sony’s “Gran Turismo” is projected to narrowly outrace the competition with $17.3 million at the box office. But “Barbie” is close behind with $17.1 million, so it’s possible that when the final tally is revealed, the summer blockbuster will have reclaimed its crown.
As for “Gran Turismo,” its opening figure includes a sizable $5.3 million from preview screenings and fan events that the studio hosted over recent weeks. That’s an unusual bit of accounting. One that came about because Sony, which originally planned to open the film on Aug. 11, instead pushed back its debut by two weeks. At the same time, it orchestrated several days of special screenings for the film to generate excitement and raise its profile. So, while most studios include Thursday preview grosses in their opening numbers, folding in several weeks of grosses is taking the definition of “weekend” in creative directions. To be clear, “Gran Turismo” has company. Paramount’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” did the same thing, including results from multiple preview screenings into its debut weekend.
And there’s another reason that this random weekend in the dog days of summer is unusual. You see, Sunday is the second National Cinema Day, during which more than 3,000 theaters across North American will slash ticket prices to a mere $4. Exhibitors are hoping to get bargain hunters to turn out, boosting attendance and giving them a chance to sell more over-priced popcorn and Coke. Privately, studios don’t have the same enthusiasm, because of the whole making tickets cheaper thing. It’s unclear how that will impact grosses.
It’s not much of a victory for “Gran Turismo.” The film has a $60 million production budget, so it will need to generate some great word-of-mouth if it wants to make a profit. Directed by Neill Blomkamp of “District 9” fame, the film centers around Jann Mardenborough, a young man whose love of the Playstation video game, “Gran Turismo,” enables him to succeed in the world of pro auto racing. The film stars Archie Madekwe, David Harbour and Orlando Bloom, and received mixed reviews. Though not from Variety, which hailed it as “a race-car movie that gives the audience a contact high.” Audiences seemed to agree, giving it an A CinemaScore.
As for “Barbie,” the box office phenomenon is barreling towards a domestic gross of $600 million. The Warner Bros. release has surpassed “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to become the highest-grossing domestic release of 2023.
“Blue Beetle,” tumbled 61% in its second weekend, earning $ million. The Warner Bros. and DC Films release has grossed $ million domestically — a disappointing result for a movie that cost more than $100 million to produce (plus, millions more in marketing).
Universal’s “Oppenheimer” nabbed fourth place with $9 million. The look at the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer has earned an extraordinary $300.1 million in North America, making it Christopher Nolan’s third highest-grossing domestic release. Only “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises” have done better. It is also the fifth highest-grossing stateside film of 2023, bypassing “The Little Mermaid.”
Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” rounded out the top five with $6.1 million, pushing the animated adventure’s domestic gross to $98.1 million.
In limited release, “Bottoms,” a high school comedy from “Shiva Baby” director Emma Seligman, scored with $516,254 from just ten locations. That comes out to a sterling per screen average of $51,625. The film was produced by MGM and will expand to next weekend to approximately 700 additional screens across North America.
Among other new release, Roadside Attractions’ “Retribution,” the latest chapter in Liam Neeson’s aging action hero era, earned a puny $3.3 million from 1,750 theaters. It’s the kind of film that usually does better on-demand. Then there’s Bleecker Street’s “Golda,” a biopic about former prime minister of Israel, Golda Meir, which opened to $1.7 million from a little over 800 screens. Finally, Briarcliff Entertainment’s “The Hill,” a faith-based story about a baseball player who overcomes a physical disability, earned $2.5 million from 1,570 locations.
Next weekend will see the return of Denzel Washington in “Equalizer 3,” who is back in ass-kicking style to close out the summer of 2023.
It’s a nail-biter at the box office.
Director Paris Barclay has successfully collaborated with showrunner Ryan Murphy several times in the past, going back to their work together on “Glee.” But when Murphy called about his Netflix project “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Barclay wasn’t sure he wanted to participate. “He called and said, ‘I don’t know if you’ve heard, I’m doing the Jeffrey Dahmer story,’” Barclay told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “And I said, ‘OK, bye.’”
Barclay didn’t want to work on anything that might humanize Jeffrey Dahmer, but he reconsidered when Murphy explained what he had in mind. “He said, ‘But wait, there’s more.’ And the more was that this particular episode was going to be told as much as possible from the point of view of a victim of Dahmer. And he was a deaf, gay, Black man.”
Barclay took the job, and the result was an Emmy nomination for his direction of Episode 6, “Silenced,” in which the director powerfully used the camera and sound design to express point of view. The episode marks a sharp turn in the series from following Dahmer to following his victims, and the shift in perspective meant that Barclay had to break some of the show’s established cinematic rules — rules which were very specific and presented to Barclay by the series’ first cinematographer, Jason McCormick. The rules included instructions about lenses and composition, avoiding conventional coverage, and keeping the camera still as much as possible, allowing the action to come and go from a fixed frame.
For Barclay, there was one problem. “The script didn’t conform to a story that could be told within the rules of ‘Dahmer,’ because it was a departure,” he said. “It was the beginning of a new chapter in the way the story was going to be told. I took the list and compared it to the story, which really started with a different protagonist. We’re in a different world for 17 minutes, we’re just with Tony. Not all of the rules worked for that, so I had to take some of these rules and figure out a way to work within them so it didn’t seem like it was a wholly new show, but also take it in this new direction.”
Barclay conferred with John T. Connor, the director of photography on “Silenced,” and created a new style to honor the character of Tony, the deaf man who enters a tragic relationship with Dahmer. “Our plan was that the show would start in a new visual language with Tony and that the camera should move,” Barclay said, “because he’s a man on the move. And it’s a brighter world. It should be essentially everything that’s not these particular rules. When he first sees Dahmer, it’s all from Tony’s point of view, and as much as possible we stay in that point of view and we stay away from looking at the world through Dahmer’s eyes, except when he does things that bring back the earlier episodes, like when he’s getting ready to crush some pills. We shot that exactly the way that those scenes have been done in earlier episodes. He’s center punched. He’s in short wide focus.”
As the episode progressed, the series’ style seeps back in until the final scene, when Tony has been killed and the previously established visual language returns in full force. “Tony has been dispatched and is about to be devoured,” Barclay said. “And so now we’re really in that dark yellow fluorescently lit center-punched still camera world that had been defined in the series before. So eventually, in the course of this episode, Dahmer’s style takes over, and the show returns to the world that’s dominated by Dahmer.”
For Barclay, the “Silenced” episode was not only a technical challenge but an emotional and moral one, given the responsibility he felt toward the real-life victims involved. When Barclay first read the script, “I said, ‘This is going to be a lot tougher than I thought. This is going to demand not only emotionally a lot out of me, it’s going to demand a way to figure out how to tell a story that is different from the rest of the series.’ Ryan really meant it to be the pivot point where we start to turn our attention towards the victims and the effect of Dahmer on society, and what the police did and didn’t do. There was a huge responsibility here, not only on the series, but also for every Black gay person and every deaf person who sees this. So it caused a lot of stress when I first read it. And that was because it was so good. If it was not good, I wouldn’t be worried, but because it was so good I felt, ‘I’m gonna have to step up on this one.’”
Director Paris Barclay has successfully collaborated with
It’s been more than a year since Virgin River Season 4 dropped on Netflix, so ahead of Season 5’s upcoming premiere on September 7, what better time to refresh your memory with a finale rewatch? As noted in our Season 4, Episode 12, “The Long Goodbye” recap, when we last left Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), and the rest of Virgin River’s residents, they had just thrown a surprise wedding, said several emotional goodbyes, had some burning questions answered, and were dealing with numerous medical emergencies. The season ended on a heck of a cliffhanger with Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) revealing Jack isn’t the father of her twins after all. So who is? How will Jack cope with the news? And will Mel encounter more pregnancy problems this time around? Virgin River Season 5, Part 1 will hopefully answer these questions and more Season 4 mysteries in its 10 episodes. The trailer teases dialed-up drama with mud fights, a trial, tears, violence, and wildfires, so make sure you’re up to speed.

“It made me royally angry. Overall, the movie is a completely different story. The Fowls are these stand-up people who have been cataloguing magic for centuries, and it’s a great battle to protect this magical artefact, blah blah blah, very boring.
In the book, Artemis’ whole thing is he wants to grow the wealth of his family like every patriarch before him. In the first scene, he poisons and nearly kills a fairy; he kidnaps another fairy and keeps her hostage, and he tricks an entire population out of a butt load of gold. It was AMAZING. 10/10 read.
But no, Disney couldn’t have a 12-year-old protagonist be a dick. And that’s just the story changes. There are a multitude of other changes that break the story in various ways.”
"It made me royally angry.
Bob Weir was cold.
It was a partly cloudy July night and temperatures were falling as Dead & Co. played before tens of thousands of fans in San Francisco, ancestral home of the band’s legendary forebear, the Grateful Dead.
Typical summer weather in the city, and Nancy Pelosi knew what to do.
Socks, she told the Birkenstock-shod guitarist on a visit backstage. And a hat.
It may be easier to picture the former speaker, still one of America’s most influential women, surrounded by suits and wingtips than beads and sandals. But Pelosi, who grew up listening to opera waft through the streets of Baltimore’s Little Italy, is a genuine tie-dyed in the wool Deadhead, as cultists and aficionados of the group are known.
She’s friends with Weir and drummer Mickey Hart, having seen the Dead and assorted iterations more times than she remembers. On several occasions, the elegantly styled lawmaker has been seen dancing in the wings, 4-inch heels and all.
It wasn’t certain she’d make the band’s valedictory performance that night, one of the last of Dead & Co.’s recently concluded farewell tour. The House of Representatives was pitching another fit, with balky Republicans acting up, must-pass legislation stalled and restless lawmakers anxiously eyeing the exits.
But in the end, the House approved the necessary defense spending bill with time to spare and Pelosi easily made it home for the Friday night show, mingling with the band and scoring the evening’s set list as a souvenir.
When Weir returned for the second half he was still sockless.
But he had on a hat.
Going through a closet not long ago, Pelosi came across a “Deadheads for Dukakis” purse from the 1988 presidential campaign; she was a freshman lawmaker at the time.
Nearly 20 years later, several of the band’s alumni played at a Washington gala celebrating Pelosi’s path-breaking election as speaker. (A review describes an uptight audience mostly sitting on its hands, though “Iko Iko,” the New Orleans standard, finally got some of the Beltway slugs moving.)
Hart was in the House gallery watching as Pelosi claimed the speakers’ gavel for a second time in 2019.
How and when did they meet? “I haven’t the faintest idea,” she says. Over the decades, San Francisco’s yeasty music and political scenes have blurred together, though, no, it’s not because of some bad acid.
It’s been a long, historic trip.
“They’re wonderful musicians,” Pelosi said of the Dead and company, putting a lie to the notion — propounded mostly by haters — that the group’s kaleidoscopic catalog can only be enjoyed in a drunken stupor or chemically induced haze. (Pelosi doesn’t drink and has never used drugs.) “It’s great music.”
Maybe it’s a congressional Democrat thing.
The late Harry Reid, another teetotaler and a Senate leader when Pelosi was speaker, had a Dead poster signed by the entire band hanging in his home in Searchlight, Nev. He called it his “prize possession.”
Pelosi brought an exhortatory poster for a luncheon conversation about the Grateful Dead.

Perusing the menu at San Francisco’s Delancey Street Restaurant — a favorite of local politicians, staffed by ex-convicts and recovering addicts — Pelosi savors the freedom of life as just another member of the House.
“You have to remember,” she says, “that for 20 years, either as speaker or [minority] leader, I was responsible for everything that happened on the floor … in terms of what happened with the Democrats … and I didn’t even realize that it was a burden until it was gone and I was like, ‘Oh, my God. What a relief.’ ”
She continues studying the menu.
“I still, obviously, take an interest in the legislation,” Pelosi goes on, “and I still raise money for the Democrats,” though not the $1 million a day she pulled in as speaker. “It’s a completely different story.”
Other diners crane to see the celebrity in their midst, seated in a booth slightly away from the main dining area.
Orders are placed. Soon lunch arrives, an international smorgasbord of latkes, kale salad, a chicken quesadilla and matzo ball soup.
“Liberated” and “emancipated” are words Pelosi often uses in her new incarnation. She’s started on a book — not a memoir, but an account of certain decisions. Her husband, Paul, continues healing from the ghastly hammer attack by a QAnon crazy who broke into their San Francisco home last fall, looking to take the ex-speaker hostage.
Will she run again next year for a 19th term, something many in this politically hyperactive city are panting to find out? “I have to make up my mind,” Pelosi responds, purposely opaque, “and then see what I want to do.”
Back to music.
She ran a finger along the crumpled set list pointing to several favorites — “Fire On The Mountain,” “Ramble On Rose,” the trippy sound-collage “Drums/Space” and “Standing On The Moon,” with its indigenous lyric:
Somewhere in San Francisco/ On a back porch in July/ Just looking up to heaven/ At this crescent in the sky.
So beautiful, Pelosi rhapsodized, “I could listen to it forever.”
The set list from Dead & Co.’s July 14 performance in San Francisco.

When it comes to music, Pelosi says, she’s something of an omnivore, with an appetite for “everything from rap to opera.” Drake, Taylor Swift, U2, Keith Urban, Elton John, Metallica, Stevie Wonder.
The Democrat is on a first-name basis with Bono and Cyndi Lauper as well as the other Paul and Nancy. (That would be McCartney and his wife Nancy Shevall.)
She’s hard-pressed to pick a favorite show of all time, but recounts seeing Bob Dylan with the Rolling Stones in Argentina — the “Bridges to Babylon Tour,” Pelosi specifies. She brought along a fellow Democrat, former New York Rep. Nita Lowey, who was seeing her first rock concert. (Naturally the performance included “Like A Rolling Stone.”)
At one point during the show there was an announcement, Pelosi says, seeking donations to fight HIV and AIDS. A young man circulated through the crowd and after receiving a contribution from Lowey, handed her a thank-you gift. “She’s like, ‘I don’t know what this is,’” Pelosi recalls, “‘it’s all in Spanish.’”
A pause.
“Condoms!” Pelosi exclaims.
The dishes are cleared. Time for dessert.
Pelosi considers the profiteroles, but abstains. She had three peppermint patties on the way to lunch, she confesses, and ice cream for breakfast.
These are fraught times. She turns serious.
“I’m a strong believer that the arts are the secret, our best hope for the future,” Pelosi says.
She describes the warm reception she received years ago when she was introduced at a Barbra Streisand concert.
“In that audience … they’re not there because they’re Democrats. You’ve got a very mixed group of people. And it just completely drove home the point … which is that [music] is a unifier. People forget their differences, they don’t even think of it. They laugh together, cry together, are inspired together, find common ground together and I do think that’s our hope.”
“That’s our hope,” she repeats.
