The district attorney investigating twice-impeached former president Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia revealed this week that possible indictments in the case are “imminent.” And while Seth Meyers is excited to see what may come, he has a hunch that throwing actual conspiracy charges at Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, may not go very well.

During his “A Closer Look” segment on Wednesday, Meyers pulled up a news clip from August 2022, when Giuliani actually testified as part of the investigation, in which “Today” reporters noted that the DA said at the time that charges for the attorney could range from racketeering to conspiracy.

While the late night host thinks those charges are deserved, he’s concerned that they simply won’t stick due to Giuliani not being great at being stealthy.

“Racketeering makes sense. Conspiracy does, too. But it might be a harder sell to a jury, because Rudy is so bad at conspiracy,” Meyers joked. “He literally holds up incriminating texts on TV. He meets with shady characters in cigar bars – and then takes pictures. ‘Remember fellas, we never had this conversation. Now, how about a quick picture, so we never forget it?’”

Meyers also offered his sympathies to the people who had to listen to Giuliani’s testimony throughout this case, saying that though the attorney spoke for six hours, it probably felt like 12 hours, poking fun at the fact that Giuliani discovered he was wearing two watches on camera during his testimony.

But, with potential charges looming, Meyers got a bigger kick out of Trump’s own reaction.

The late night host made fun of the twice-impeached former president’s “tailspin” on Truth Social, in which he questioned why nobody admonished him in real time, or even outright hung up on him, if his call to Georgia’s Secretary of State — during which, you might remember, Trump asked Brad Raffensperger to “find” almost 12,000 votes for Trump to turn the election in his favor — was actually a problem.

“I love that his argument is: ‘If I was so crazy, how come they didn’t hang up on me?’ Because you were the f—ing president, dude!” Meyers mocked. “I know it’s crazy, but it fully happened.”

You can watch Meyers’ full “A Closer Look” segment in the video above.

Avalon Emerson is hard to pin down: In recent years, the Berlin-based DJ-producer has released an aerodynamic techno project with Anunaku; an EP of whimsical, depressurized electronic compositions; and a couple of funky, raw-edged remixes for King Princess. The biggest left-turn of all, though, may have been the cover of the Magnetic Fields’ “Long-Forgotten Fairytale” that opened her 2020 DJ-Kicks mix. Faithful and brilliant, it was a surprising fake-out that swapped Stephen Merritt’s jangling production for bright, gloopy synthwork without losing the original’s mixture of sarcasm and sincerity.

Emerson’s latest track, “Sandrail Silhouette,” indicates that that gear shift into indie-pop wasn’t a one-off. (It was co-produced with London musician Bullion, who had encouraged her to record the Magnetic Fields cover.) A first glimpse at her debut full-length Avalon Emerson & the Charm, it’s a gorgeous, vocal-led reverie that nods to the undulating textures of ’90s electronica as well as the diffuse moods of cult pop artists like Scribble and Anna Domino. Emerson’s dazed vocals are breathy and serene, hiding anxieties about the passing of time: “Tell me I got more time/When all my friends are having daughters/Beautiful just like them of course/A reason for an optimistic view.” Underneath the jangly percussion and shaggy guitar, strings bloom like flowers after a storm. Although the indie pop pivot comes as a surprise, “Sandrail Silhouette” ultimately feels like it’s part of the same bright, windswept world as her 060 EP, and it shows that Emerson might be just as compelling a frontwoman as she is a DJ.

Students in Waterloo Region and Guelph are sure to be disappointed when they wake up as buses have been cancelled but schools will remain open.

The roads have been deemed unsafe for buses to drive on but are still safe enough for parents and teachers to traverse.

“As always, families may choose to keep their child(ren) home if they feel it is unsafe to travel to school,” said a note from the Waterloo Region District School Board.

“If you keep your child home, please call the school to report their absence.”

The Waterloo Board also noted that extended day and daycares in schools are also open.

The Wellington Catholic District School Board and Upper Grand District School Board said that exams have been postponed for a day.

Meta said it will reinstate Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks — two years after he was suspended from the platforms for violating rules against inciting violence — with “new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses.”

“The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying — the good, the bad and the ugly — so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box,” Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said in a blog post announcing the decision. “But that does not mean there are no limits to what people can say on our platform.”

On Jan. 7, 2021, the social media giant indefinitely froze Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts with CEO Mark Zuckerberg citing the risk of ongoing violence if the then-president were allowed to remain on the services. Trump had praised rioters who engaged in violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. “We love you, you’re very special,” Trump said in a video clip he shared that day. “I know your pain, I know you’re hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us.”

In June 2021, Meta (whose corporate name was Facebook at the time) said it would suspend Trump until at least January 2023 and would reinstate his accounts “if conditions permit,” responding to a recommendation from the company’s externally staffed Oversight Board. Trump, who has repeatedly and falsely claimed he won the 2020 election, says he’s seeking the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election.

“Like any other Facebook or Instagram user, Mr. Trump is subject to our Community Standards,” Clegg wrote in the post Tuesday. “In light of his violations, he now also faces heightened penalties for repeat offenses — penalties which will apply to other public figures whose accounts are reinstated from suspensions related to civil unrest under our updated protocol. In the event that Mr. Trump posts further violating content, the content will be removed and he will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation.”

In the wake of the Jan. 6 attack, Trump had been kicked off numerous internet platforms. Last November, mega-billionaire Elon Musk reinstated Trump’s Twitter account shortly after Musk closed the acquisition of the social network. To date, the ex-president has not resumed posting from the Twitter account.

In early 2022, Trump’s media and tech company launched Truth Social, a Twitter-style copycat social app, where he currently has about 4.8 million followers. Trump has claimed he’ll remain on Truth Social and would not return to Twitter.

Trump, in post Wednesday on Truth Social about Meta’s decision, did not indicate whether he intended to resume posting on Facebook and Instagram once he is able to. “FACEBOOK, which has lost Billions of Dollars in value since ‘deplatforming’ your favorite President, me, has just announced that they are reinstating my account. Such a thing should never again happen to a sitting President, or anybody else who is not deserving of retribution!” the ex-president posted.

Meta’s Clegg called the company’s suspension of Trump two years ago “an extraordinary decision taken in extraordinary circumstances.”

To assess whether Trump’s “risk to public safety that existed in January 2021 has sufficiently receded,” Meta “evaluated the current environment according to our Crisis Policy Protocol,” according to Clegg. That included “looking at the conduct of the U.S. 2022 midterm elections, and expert assessments on the current security environment.” Meta concluded that “the risk has sufficiently receded, and that we should therefore adhere to the two-year timeline we set out,” Clegg wrote.

If Trump posts content that does not violate Meta’s Community Standards but “contributes to the sort of risk that materialized on January 6th,” such as content that delegitimizes an upcoming election or is related to QAnon, the company may limit the distribution of such posts, and for repeated instances, may temporarily restrict access to its advertising tools, according to Clegg. “This step would mean that content would remain visible on Mr. Trump’s account but would not be distributed in people’s Feeds, even if they follow Mr. Trump,” he continued.

Meta may leave up Trump posts even if they violate its content guidelines in the event the company deems that “there is a public interest in knowing that Mr. Trump made the statement that outweighs any potential harm,” Clegg wrote. Meta also may decide to restrict the distribution of such posts but leave them visible on Trump’s accounts.

Jessica González, co-CEO of advocacy group Free Press, criticized the tech giant’s decision. “Meta is moving backwards, returning us to a time when Donald Trump used the company’s powerful tools to spread lies and dangerous rhetoric, and incite violence targeted at disenfranchised communities and his ideological enemies,” González said in a statement.

Meta’s move to reinstate Trump on Facebook and Instagram was the correct decision, said Jameel Jaffer, executive director at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.

“This is the right call — not because the former president has any right to be on the platform but because the public has an interest in hearing directly from candidates for political office,” Jaffer said in a statement. “There are narrow circumstances in which social media platforms really have no choice but to take down political leaders’ posts — which is why we endorsed Meta’s decision to suspend Trump’s account when he used it to encourage violence. In most circumstances, though, it’s better if the major social media platforms err on the side of leaving speech up, even if the speech is offensive or false, so that it can be addressed by other users and other institutions.”

“Stephen Curry: Underrated” producers Sean Havey, Erick Peyton, Marissa Torres Ericson and director Peter Nicks discussed their new documentary at the Variety Sundance Studio presented by Audible.

The documentary chronicles the NBA star’s personal life as he works to fulfill his promise to his mother, Sonya Curry, to graduate from college. Curry made the pledge when he left Davidson College to declare for the draft in 2009 and now must also juggle his basketball career.

Director Nicks uses footage of Curry both as a young basketball player and current professional athlete to illustrate his transformation from a modest high school player to an NBA star.

“The expected thing maybe would be to follow Steph during the season chasing after a championship,” Nicks explained. “But that story of Davidson…we really wanted to lean into that, because that’s the story that hasn’t really been told.”

The film features Davidson basketball coach Bob McKillop taking the player under his wing, leading to their monumental 2008 NCAA tournament run, as well as the Golden State Warriors 2021 season, where the team aimed to win the NBA championship despite a disappointing season prior. Echoes of the doubts people had for Curry in his early career come back, as the documentary parallels the two times in his life.

Nicks is no stranger to Sundance. His film “Homeroom” won the inaugural Jonathan Oppenheim editing award at the festival in 2021, and in 2017, his project “The Force” received the Sundance Directing Prize.

In addition to this quartet (and Curry himself), the documentary also counts Ryan Coogler and Ben Cotner as producers, with Allison Joy Gale billed as co-producer. Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler and Emily Osborne served as executive producers, with co-executive producers Jenelle Lindsay and Tiffany Williams.

Spoiler alert: J.Lo looks fantastic in a wedding dress.

You surely knew that, given not only the plethora of wedding-themed movies Jennifer Lopez has made over the years, from “The Wedding Planner” to “Monster-in-Law” to the recent “Marry Me,” but also her own offscreen life, of course.

And now comes “Shotgun Wedding,” where the ageless pop star and rom-com queen dons a pouffy white concoction that gradually sheds layers of tulle to become increasingly sexy as Lopez fights off not only cringey wedding guests but machine-gun toting pirates. She switches at one point to combat boots — plucked from a dead guy! —- over wedding heels, and here’s another spoiler alert: if anyone can make combat boots work with pouffy tulle while running in slow motion, it’s Lopez.

But all the charm and style in the world, and J.Lo has more than anyone, can’t make up for the bizarre tonal imbalance of “Shotgun Wedding,” a movie too violent to be funny and too funny (in the odd, weird sense) to be fun. The movie, directed by Jason Moore, also commits the unlikely crime of under-using that other bulletproof Jennifer of the moment, Jennifer Coolidge, who often seems to be searching palpably for decent lines. Come on, people! You had BOTH Jennifers! This should have been a slam dunk.

Kudos, though, to whoever picked the stunning resort for this particular destination wedding (the shoot took place in the Dominican Republic, standing in for the Philippines). It’s here that we first meet Darcy, our bride, at the rehearsal dinner, already looking so much better than everyone else, in resort wear and turquoise chunky jewelry — but we digress.

Darcy is navigating a guest list filled with proverbial hand grenades, even before the real grenades start flying. There’s her icy mother (Sonia Braga, also sadly underused), who is divorced from her father (Cheech Marin) and appalled at the oddly ditzy new girlfriend he’s brought to the wedding (D’Arcy Carden). Mom tells Darcy she should have accepted her dad’s millions (or billions?) to make the wedding perfect, but Darcy replies that the couple wanted to do it their way. Besides, they’re grownups.

The groom, you ask? We’re getting to that. Initially the part was to be played by Ryan Reynolds, a tantalizing comedic possibility. Then it was to be Armie Hammer, who stepped aside for obvious reasons, and now we have Josh Duhamel, perfectly handsome and agreeable but … the chemistry rests with Lopez, and not between them.

In a clever twist, Tom is the “groomzilla,” obsessed with wedding details, and spray-painting the pineapples all night long. As for his mother, well, she’s the delightfully ditzy Carol (Coolidge), obsessed with “South Pacific” and eager to have a good time. (Coolidge, hot off “White Lotus,” knows her way around a resort).

It must be said that Coolidge — who at this point in her career would be anyone’s top choice to play any mother — more than pulls her weight. But there’s only so much she can do with dialogue that seems slapped together with minimum effort. True, Coolidge can make almost anything sound funny, but at times it feels like her script instructions said nothing more than “Carol says something wacky.”

Anyway, things get wacky overall pretty fast, starting with the arrival of a surprise guest by helicopter – it’s Sean, Darcy’s ex-fiance, a swaggering, shirt-unbuttoned, walking Y chromosome played by Lenny Kravitz. Tom is immediately perplexed by Sean’s presence.

But there’s no time to fret. The next day, with everyone dressed for the wedding, more unexpected guests arrive — and they definitely weren’t on the list. They’re pirates, and they’re after Darcy’s dad’s money.

The pirates take everyone hostage, confining them to, well, OK, an infinity pool, but still confining them! In a stroke of rom-com luck, the bride and groom are elsewhere, having a little talk about their relationship. Soon, though, the relationship is beside the point — they have to save themselves and everyone else, too. And that’s when the killing starts.

Not to give away too much, but there’s lots of automatic gunfire and grenade-throwing and other mayhem that feels out of place anyway you slice it — oh yes, knives too! — and this rom-com doesn’t end up feeling very romantic OR comedic.

Not to detract from Lopez’s appeal, which is timeless. She’s the one actor in the whole enterprise whose every line reading seems to ring true, no matter how silly on paper — as when she says she can’t breathe, and Tom assumes it’s, you know, the machine guns, but she says no, “It’s the shapewear.” J.Lo makes it work. (She’s also a producer on the film.)

There is one charming scene, to be fair, where we’re all allowed to relax and have fun. People are singing and dancing and doing karaoke, and it feels like a blast. Finally these are people we’d want to get to know. Unfortunately, it’s all during the closing credits.

Stick around for them, though. It’ll feel like a cool dip in an infinity pool.

“Shotgun Wedding,” an Amazon Studios release, has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America “for language and some violence/bloody images.” Running time: 100 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Jessica Fletcher, Lieutenant Columbo, Veronica Mars, Olivia Benson, Sherlock Holmes…. These are a few of TV’s prominent sleuths whose traits blend together to create Poker Face’s charming lead, Charlie Cale. Peacock’s new mystery drama endeavors to add Charlie to an enviable list of fictional small-screen detectives. The biggest hurdle is how the show and its protagonist can distinguish themselves while (inevitably) being compared to those who came before. Thankfully, Rian Johnson’s triumphant writing, paired with Natasha Lyonne’s enigmatic performance, results in one hell of a TV show. And it’s evident right away with the stellar first two installments.

Poker Face pays homage to hits like Columbo—as witnessed in the opening credits font, too—yet successfully stands out with a fresh, fun perspective on a “howcatchem.” That’s right. PF isn’t a whodunit like Johnson’s recent Knives Out films. It still carries his signature ability to invent gripping narratives and esoteric characters connected through Charlie’s escapades. Johnson and Lyonne craft such a compelling world for Charlie, it doesn’t matter that she’s not in one location too long or solving only a single crime throughout the show. In fact, that’s the most entertaining—if a tad circumstantial—aspect.

Each episode begins with the reveal of who the killer is and exactly how they committed the murder. And it’s entertaining to watch Charlie figure it out after the audience knows using her deducing skills and knack to sniff out liars. Lyonne’s portrayal is effortless. In less capable hands, Poker Face would run the risk of being too slow or structured. Lyonne inhabits Charlie with a brazen vulnerability, whether riffing opposite Adrien Brody and Benjamin Bratt, becoming pals with Hong Chau and Megan Suri, or bonding with an old friend, played by Dascha Polanco. (And all of this happens within a couple of outings alone.)

GRADE FOR SEASON 1, EPISODE 2: B+

Poker Face initially doesn’t dwell on Charlie’s larger personal background. We glean that she’s prolific at telling when someone lies; it’s a vibe she flawlessly picks up on. (Honestly, what a talent.) She’s used this in the past to earn big at poker tournaments in cities like Denver and Cheyenne before reaching Las Vegas. She landed a job at Frost Casino because, instead of letting her “misuse” her powers, the owner gives her a job as a hostess.

This feels like an arc with layers that need to unravel at some point: Why did Charlie take the gig instead of continuing her shenanigans and making money? In episode one, “Dead Man’s Hand,” she admits she used to be rich (“It was easier than being broke, harder than doing just fine,” she wisely adds). So what made her stop? Was it just the idea of settling down with a well-paid job? If so, it’s tragic that she has to give it all up now for a life on the road.

“Dead Man’s Hand” opens with Natalie (Polanco), a Frost Casino maid and Charlie’s good friend, who spots something dangerous on a rich man’s computer while cleaning his room. She takes photographic evidence, but instead of running to the cops—who can blame her?—she confides in the casino’s new leader, Sterling Frost Jr. (Brody), and his security aide, Cliff (Bratt). Unfortunately, they would rather kill Natalie and her drunk, abusive husband than turn in a wealthy whale who brings the casino a ton of money. And that’s exactly what they do after falsely lulling her into safety.

Charlie can’t stop herself from investigating because she doesn’t believe how Natalie died. She fixates on tiny clues (a missing gun, a missed call) and breaks into her friend’s devices to correctly figure out the true story. Charlie was meant to team up with Sterling Jr. and Cliff to scheme affluent clients in poker games using her “supernatural infallibility” to pick up who’s lying. Instead, she turns on the duo and gets Frost Casino blackballed, leading Sterling Jr. to jump off the balcony (so long, Adrien Brody). Charlie barely escapes Cliff’s gunshot and goes on the run because the big boss (a.k.a. Sterling Sr., whom we meet via a brief phone call) is after her now.

Poker Face | Exclusive Look at Natasha Lyonne & Adrian Brody in Episode 1

Poker Face is clearly Charlie’s story, but each episode presents enticing and serious subplots even if we don’t spend sufficient time with them. The premiere’s case deals with a child pornography ring that Frost Casino may or may not benefit from. Since Charlie is our lens into it all, and she’s embarked on a road trip far away from Vegas, it’s all we’ll ever know (for now, at least). But that’s alright because, as established, Charlie’s journey is compellingly told.

Episode two, “Night Shift,” also has meaty ideas on the periphery. The victim, Damian (Brandon Michael Hall), is a war vet struggling with expenses while working at a Subway chain—so much so, he even buys a lottery daily. His killer, Jed (Colton Haynes), has mental health issues, as seen in his obsession with the neighborhood convenience store employee, Sara (Suri). These key details add value to their characters without taking over Poker Face’s main goal: Charlie coincidentally being drawn into their case.

Her car breaks down close to the garage where Jed works with his uncle. She goes in to get it fixed, but she’s told to wait overnight because he’d rather watch Top Chef live over help a customer. (He’s got his priorities straight). It’s sadly the same night Jed decides to kill Damian, not knowing a burgeoning detective is nearby. The crime itself isn’t shocking: Damian finally wins $25,000 and reveals it to Jed while confronting him over his creepy attitude toward Sara. Jed then pushes him off the roof and steals the lottery ticket.

Meanwhile, Charlie finds respite in this small town with Marge (a splendid Hong Chau), a stranger who helps her superglue her wound and gives tips on how to stay hidden (no social media, ATMs, or credit cards—I feel like I could’ve told her all this too). Marge and Charlie bond immediately, but it’s short-lived because Marge is blamed for Damian’s death. First, a friend is killed. Now, another friend is arrested? You bet Charlie will get involved, even if it means getting caught by Cliff.

Photo: Poker Face

Channeling her inner Olivia Benson and Veronica Mars (and with a whole lot of original Lyonne-inspired sass), Charlie questions town locals to map out Damian, Jed, and Sara’s daily routines. She inspects Jed’s hangout—the garage rooftop—gains Sara’s trust, and learns about trucking calls in time to solve how and why Jed bludgeoned Damian and dumped his body in Marge’s truck. She doesn’t stick around to see the cops reach the garage lest Cliff finds her. But she’s done her amateur sleuth duty of solving the crime and saving Marge.

Poker Face isn’t hesitant to remind us that, yes, Charlie is a novice at playing detective. In episode one, she takes quite a while to connect the dots that Natalie’s phone password is the same as her locker code, and she openly interrogates killers knowing they’re capable of murder. She didn’t expect to use her powers for this work, but here we are anyway. Poker Face begins with a luxurious pace as Charlie adapts to her surroundings, but it’s a strong start; our patience is well-rewarded in these hourlong episodes.

“Night Shift” ends with Charlie on the road again, barely escaping Cliff after he tracked her down because she withdrew bills from an ATM. Who knows where her adventure will lead her next?

Stray observations

  • Look out for the Poker Face episode three/four recap tomorrow. The show will continue with one weekly episode for the remaining six installments.
  • I love that Dascha Polanco continues to appear in Natasha Lyonne’s projects after starring together in Orange Is The New Black. First, Russian Doll season one, and now the Poker Face opener.
  • Natalie’s remark about Charlie watching the news when it’s never anything good hits hard: “Every day you’re mad at something you can’t do anything about.”
  • In case you’re wondering, Charlie’s Twitter account handle is @C00rsGalnnLung3Dartz. I have to assume it’s because she loves her Coors cans.
  • Admittedly, I cracked up at Cliff’s Burn Notice reference when he calls Charlie “Michael Westin.”
  • I’m thrilled that Benjamin Bratt is the other connective thread of all Poker Face episodes.
  • Who do we think is playing Sterling Frost Sr., based on the voice behind the phone call?
  • Shout out to (Oscar-nominee!!) Chau’s wonderful delivery of “I’m getting not-gonna-hook-up vibes” to Lyonne.
  • Another exchange I really enjoyed, partially because of Lyonne’s expert enunciation:
Marge: “The pain is in your mind.”
Charlie: “Lady, you got no idea.”
  • Technically, there isn’t much to predict about Poker Face except when Cliff will catch up to Charlie (and what happens after that?), but I’m excited to start this Poker Face journey here.

This pack of oddball heroes is getting a big vacation. The Doom Patrol TV series has been cancelled by HBO Max. While there won’t be a fifth season, there are still some new episodes to come.

A comedy-drama series, Doom Patrol stars Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer, Joivan Wade, Skye Roberts, and Michelle Gomez. The story centers on a group of unlikely heroes — Robotman aka Cliff Steele (Fraser), Negative Man aka Larry Trainor (Bomer), Elasti-Woman aka Rita Farr (Bowlby), Crazy Jane (Guerrero), Victor Stone aka Cyborg (Wade), Kay Challis (Roberts), and Laura De Mille aka Madame Rouge (Gomez) who all gained their abilities in accidents for following trauma.  In season four, the team unexpectedly travels to the future to find an unwelcome surprise. Faced with their imminent demise, the Doom Patrol must decide once and for all which is more important: their own happiness or the world’s fate?

The Doom Patrol series premiered in February 2019 and the first season was released on the DC Universe subscription service. Season two was released on both DC Universe and HBO Max. The show was renewed for a third season but shifted completely to HBO Max. It was renewed for a fourth season in October 2021.

The current fourth season is comprised of 12 episodes that are split into two parts. The first six episodes finished being released on January 5th. The second half dozen installments will be released at some point this year.

The Titans series has also been cancelled, and its final fourth-season episodes have yet to be scheduled.

“While these will be the final seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings,” an HBO Max spokesperson said. “We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series. We thank Titans showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures. For Doom Patrol, we celebrate showrunner Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the Titans and Doom Patrol, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”

“To our wonderfully supportive partners at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and DC Studios, thank you for indulging us these past four seasons,” showrunner Carver said. “Also, what were you smoking? To our brilliant cast, indomitable crew, fearless writing staff and, most of all, to our beautiful fans: thank you all the more. You made this a once-in-a-lifetime ride.”

Director James Gunn, a co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios since November 1st, noted the decision to cancel the DC series was made before his tenure. He added, “I certainly wish the best for the talented group of creators, actors, and the rest of the crew that produced both shows.”

What do you think? Have you been enjoying the Doom Patrol TV series? Are you disappointed that there won’t be a fifth season? Were you expecting the HBO Max cancellation?

Paul McCartney is releasing a photography book compiling 275 of his snapshots taken between the end of 1963 and the beginning of 1964—when Beatlemania was becoming a global phenomenon. 1964: Eyes of the Storm will be published June 13 by Liveright/W. W. Norton. The 35mm images are McCartney’s personal record of the time, and capture the Beatles’ travels through Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington, D.C., and Miami. Watch a trailer for the book below.

1964: Eyes of the Storm includes several never-before-seen portraits of John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, as well as a foreword by McCartney, an introduction by Harvard historian and New Yorker essayist Jill Lepore, a Preface by Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London, and an essay by Senior Curator Rosie Broadley. The process of creating the book began in 2020, when a trove of nearly 1,000 of McCartney’s photographs were re-discovered in his archive.

“Anyone who rediscovers a personal relic or family treasure is instantly flooded with memories and emotions, which then trigger associations buried in the haze of time,” McCartney wrote in press materials. “This was exactly my experience in seeing these photos, all taken over an intense three-month period of travel, culminating in February 1964.” He continued:

It was a wonderful sensation to be plunged right back. Here was my own record of our first huge trip, a photographic journal of The Beatles in six cities, beginning in Liverpool and London, followed by Paris (where John and I had been ordinary hitchhikers three years before), and then what we regarded as the big time, our first visit as a group to America.

Paul McCartney is releasing a photography book

After parting ways with its parent company First Look Media in December, the non-profit documentary production studio Field of Vision is at Sundance with four docus and actively seeking new donors and supporters.

Founded in 2015 by former Hot Docs programming director Charlotte Cook, “CitizenFour” Oscar winner Laura Poitras and SXSW prize winner A.J. Schnack (“We Always Talk to Strangers”), the company now run by Cook has become a force to be reckoned with in recent years. The filmmaker-driven visual journalism documentary company’s credits include the Oscar-winning film “American Factory” as well Academy Award nominated features including “Ascension,” “Strong Island,” and “Hale County This Morning, This Evening.” (Schnack and Poitras stepped down from their roles as co-creators and executive producers in 2017 and 2019, respectively.)

Overall, Field of Vision has supported or produced more than 260 features, shorts, and series mainly via grant money provided by First Look Media, the company run by eBay founder Pierre Olmidyar. Over the last several years, the company has begun commercially investing in docus, including the Sinead O’Connor docu “Nothing Compares” and Sundance hit “We Met in Virtual Reality.”

“We started to invest in docs to really build towards this independent future in sustainability,” says Cook. “I was very hesitant about doing investment and about Field of Vision walking into a commercial space because I really wanted to make sure we could do that and retain our values. Luckily, we found that we could.”

Money that Field of Vision makes from selling a film that they have invested in, goes back into the company to help fund another docu.

“It’s a very different way of thinking about commercial funding,” says Cook. “We really saw success last year with ‘Nothing Compares’ and ‘We Met in VR.’ It was a financial success more than we ever anticipated.”

Despite that success, Field of Vision will only be investing in a “handful” of docus each year.

“We aren’t aiming to be a commercial studio,” says Cook. “It’s a side part of what we do. It’s a way to generate some revenue and then also really help a film and filmmaker. But we still want the ability to grant because granting is always better for a filmmaker because they don’t have to pay the money back.”

This year, the doc studio has three features and one short at Sundance: Sierra Urich’s “Joonam,” (U.S. Documentary competition), Milisuthando Bongela’s “Milisuthando” (World Cinema Documentary competition) and Alison O’Daniel’s “Tuba Thieves” and Elaine McMillion Sheldon’s “King Coal,” (both NEXT section docs). While none of the four docus were investment films, they each received multiple Field of Vision grants, which are usually in the $25,000 to $50,000 range. Each doc is seeking distribution.

Cook says that Field of Vision will be supporting each filmmaker throughout Sundance and beyond.

“It’s a lot of work to work with the filmmakers through strategy so other grant organizations often just contribute the grant,” says Cook. “Whereas we really try to be there at every stage. So, we’ve already done calls with all of the directors about their goals, and we connect them with various buyers. Also, Field of Vision has always been really dedicated to providing legal support for filmmakers. So, we have a pro bono legal clinic because we want to empower filmmakers.”

This year Cook is in Park City to not only support Field of Vision filmmakers, but to also raise grant money that will eventually replace First Look Media investments.

“Last year, Field of Vision was supported more than fifty percent by either revenue from films or fundraising,” Cook says. “So, it’s not like we’re going out in the world for the first time and raising funds, it’s just that we haven’t been very visible about it. So, the big change this year will be talking more about our investing and fundraising because I think a lot of people didn’t realize how successful we were with our doc investments.

She continues: “Making more people aware that we have the ability to fund at a certain level in the field and we can come in with larger money and do that kind of work is something I plan on talking more about.”

After parting ways with its parent company

Russia today warned that Germany’s decision to send dozens of modern tanks to Ukraine is ‘extremely dangerous’ and will ‘take the conflict to a new level’.

Bringing an end to a bitter row, Chancellor Olaf Scholz finally confirmed today Berlin will send its own German-made Leopard 2 tanks to the front lines and allow Nato allies to deliver some of theirs.

Scholz even teased further deliveries of air defence systems, heavy artillery and multiple rocket launchers and says Germany ‘intends to expand what we have delivered’, a major U-turn on the chancellor’s previous reluctance.

Russia branded the move a ‘blatant provocation’ and warned the new Nato supplies will ‘burn like all the rest’, while one raging Putin propagandist called for the German parliament to be destroyed in a nuclear strike.

And Russia’s ambassador today said: ‘This extremely dangerous decision takes the conflict to a new level of confrontation, and contradicts statements by German politicians about the unwillingness of the German Federation to get involved in it.’

The United States will provide 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in a deal worth $400 million, reports Bloomberg, while Berlin will initially supply 14 Leopard 2 tanks.

German soldiers carry out exercises in 2021 with the Leopard 2 battle tank which could soon be deployed in Ukraine

Ukraine had been relying on Soviet-era T-72 tanks but its military will be modernised with the shipment of Nato vehicles

Russia’s own storage facilities have around 10,200 tanks, while an estimated 3,300 have been deployed in Ukraine, with 1,640 destroyed.

Volodymyr Zelensky said he was ‘sincerely grateful’ and his officials hailed the move as a ‘punching fist’ for democracy, while Russia had warned it would cause a ‘global catastrophe’ and escalate the war beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Russia had warned the supply of more tanks would ‘leave a lasting mark’ and lead to ‘nothing good’, with fears in Moscow that the hi-tech equipment could land a devastating blow on the invading forces.

Pressure has been building for weeks on German chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government to send the tanks and allow Nato allies to do the same.

The German leader was wary of moves that could prompt Russia to escalate but he finally relented today.

He said in a statement: ‘We must always make it clear in everything we do that we are doing what is necessary and possible to support Ukraine, but that at the same time we are preventing the war from escalating into a war between Russia and Nato.’

The goal was to quickly establish two battalions with Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine, the statement said, adding Germany would in a first step provide 14 tanks from military stocks.

Training Ukrainian troops how to use the armour will begin in Germany soon, and the nation will also provide logistics and ammunition, it said.

Germany will issue the appropriate transfer permits to partner countries that want to quickly deliver the German-made tanks from their stocks to Ukraine, it said.

In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: ‘I am certain that many experts understand the absurdity of this idea. The plan is disastrous in terms of technology.

‘But above all, it overestimates the potential it will add to the Ukrainian army. These tanks burn just like all the others.’

Putin propagandist Yevgeny Satanovsky, president of the Moscow Institute of the Middle East, told the Waldman-LINE channel that nuclear-tipped missiles should be used on the centre of German democracy.

He said: ‘German tanks with crosses on their armour will again march across Ukraine attacking Russian soldiers.

‘I have a natural reaction to this – the Soviet Union bombed Berlin in 1941. And to me this is a signal that the Reichstag, or Bundestag, which now replaces the Reichstag, simply should not remain standing any longer.

‘Flat, slightly radioactive, melted-down ground [will remain in its place].’

Meanwhile Putin’s favourite propagandist Vladimir Solovyov also ranted about the move, which he plainly sees as a significant blow to the Russian president while also being proof in Russian eyes that Germany has directly joined the war.

Who is providing tanks to fight Putin?

US: Officials say Washington is poised to send at least 30 of its M1 Abrams battle tanks, reversing its previous position. The tank has a 120mm smoothbore gun.

GERMANY: Sources say chancellor Olaf Scholz has decided to send German-built Leopard 2 battle tanks, which have a 120mm smoothbore gun that is one of the most widely used in the West. He will also allow other countries to send theirs, they say.

BRITAIN: The UK government announced on January 14 that it would send a squadron, or 14, of its Challenger 2 battle tanks, which has a 120mm rifled gun.

POLAND: Warsaw has said it is ready to send up to 14 of its Leopards and has been pressing Berlin to approve the move. A source said Poland had submitted a request to Germany, which must approve re-export requests of the vehicle.

NORWAY: The Norwegian government is considering whether to send some of its Leopard tanks, newspapers reported.

FINLAND: The Finnish government has said it could donate a small number of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine if a wider group of European nations also decided to do so, but said it would depend on Berlin’s approval.

FRANCE: French President Emmanuel Macron has asked his defence minister to ‘work on’ the idea of sending Leclerc battle tanks to Ukraine. Macron said that sending tanks must not escalate the situation, must take into account the time to train Ukrainians to be effective, and must not endanger France’s own security.

‘It’s time to send a clear, resolute message that we now consider Germany a direct party to the conflict, rekindling memories of WW2.

‘German tanks appearing will definitely mean we consider German territory, military bases and other sites as legitimate targets.

‘Nato wants to fight in this cunning way, pretending that it’s not fighting.

‘In your dreams! In your dreams!

‘And [German defence minister Boris] Pistorius will go down in history as an imbecile who led to Germany to become a zone of direct destruction.

‘And [chancellor] Scholz too, and [foreign minister Annalena] Baerbock.

‘The German people will know which new Nazi leaders they have raised and brought to power. That’s my subjective opinion.’

Another leading Putin propagandist, Margarita Simonyan, said Germany will send ‘gas chambers’ to Ukraine after authorising the tanks.

Alluding to the Nazi’s gas chambers during the Second World War, Simonyan wrote on Telegram: ‘Germany, after being flogged by Washington, will send 14 tanks to Ukraine.

‘Closer to summer, deliveries of gas chambers are also expected.’

One official said the tanks would be bought under an upcoming Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative package, which provides longer-range funding for weapons and equipment to be purchased from commercial vendors.

By law, Germany needs to agree for the tanks to be given to Ukraine, which is not a member of Nato.

‘A few hundred tanks for our tank crews… This is what is going to become a real punching fist of democracy,’ Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s administration, wrote on Telegram.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailed the move today, saying: ‘Together, we are accelerating our efforts to ensure Ukraine wins this war and secures a lasting peace.’

Poland’s prime minister thanked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday for his decision to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

‘Thank you @Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz,’ Mateusz Morawiecki wrote on Twitter. ‘The decision to send Leopards to Ukraine is a big step towards stopping Russia.’

In response, Putin has begun a creeping new stealth mobilisation, even while denying it is under way.

The Kremlin rejected a report emanating from US officials that a new ‘quieter’ wave of 200,000 recruits is planned.

Yet there is clear evidence of a dramatic new grab of conscripts for fighting and to work in plants to build tanks, missiles and other hardware for his war effort.

The drive was in progress before the expected tank deal, but Moscow could well use the ramp-up as justification for the mobilisation.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has decided to send the Leopards and allow other countries such as Poland to do so as well, sources said

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has decided to send the Leopards and allow other countries such as Poland to do so as well, sources said

A Western source said: ‘It is under way without any big announcements, and will increase.’

One tactic is likely to be to press teenage conscripts – who by law should not be sent to the war, only for military training – to rapidly sign up for the conflict with offers of increased salaries.

Separately, new rules will prevent men of military age driving abroad to countries such as Georgia and Kazakhstan to avoid the draft.

Drivers will have to book slots to exit the country, making it easier for authorities to veto their move abroad.

Thousands of men remain outside Russia for fear of being thrust on to Putin’s front lines, where he has suffered catastrophic losses.

Meanwhile, migrants from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan – who have received Russian passports – have been suddenly prevented from leaving Russia.

Those trying to do so have been told they are ‘included on the mobilisation list’, it was reported.

In the Omsk region, a massive new training centre is being built apparently for thousands of draftees required to retrain for defence factories.

Instead of two years of training, recruits will be given crash courses of up to six months to fill labour shortages in plants essential for Putin’s war effort, reported Russian news site Readovka.

Draftee soldiers from the Novosibirsk region forced to the front line have begged their wives and sisters to protest on their behalf to the president and other officials.

Men taking new jobs in some regions, for example Kaluga near Moscow, are being ordered to show military registrations – documents they must hold by law – so employers can funnel them to the forces if ordered to do so.

Mr Zelensky, who turns 45 on Wednesday, has pressed Western allies to provide their most modern battle tanks, saying ‘the need is larger’ in his nightly video address on Tuesday.

Germany and the US have until now held back on providing heavy armour, wary of support that could give the Kremlin reason to widen the conflict.

Russia has warned that supplies of modern offensive weaponry to Ukraine would escalate the war, with some officials saying its allies were leading the world into a ‘global catastrophe’.

Deliveries of battle tanks by the US would be a ‘another blatant provocation’, Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s ambassador to the United States, said on Wednesday.

‘It is obvious that Washington is purposefully trying to inflict a strategic defeat on us,’ Antonov said in remarks published on the embassy’s Telegram messaging app.

‘American tanks will be destroyed by our military in the same way all other samples of Nato equipment are being destroyed,’ the diplomat added.

Ukraine has pleaded for months for Western tanks it says it needs to give its forces the firepower and mobility to break through Russian lines and recapture territory.

The question of whether to supply Ukraine with significant numbers of the vehicles has dominated debate among Western allies in recent days.

Germany has been pivotal because Leopards, fielded by 20 armies around the world, are seen as the best option for Ukraine as they are available in large numbers and are easy to deploy and maintain.

Although the US Abrams is considered less suitable due to its fuel consumption and maintenance needs, a US decision to send the tanks could make it easier for Germany – which has called for a united front among Ukraine’s allies – to allow the supply of Leopards.

Mr Scholz had decided to send the Leopards and allow other countries such as Poland to do so as well, two sources familiar with the matter said.

Spiegel magazine said Germany was planning to supply at least one company, which usually comprises 14 vehicles, of Leopard 2 A6 tanks. Some other allies intend to follow in supplying their own Leopards, it reported.

Separately, Ukraine dismissed more than a dozen senior officials in the biggest shake-up of its wartime leadership.

The European Union, which offered Ukraine the status of candidate member last June, welcomed the changes.

Among officials who resigned or were dismissed were governors of the Kyiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, the latter three being frontline provinces. Kyiv and Sumy were major battlefields earlier in the war.

Some of the officials who left had been linked to corruption allegations.

Ukraine has a history of graft and shaky governance and is under pressure to show it can be a reliable steward of billions of dollars in Western aid.

It comes just days after a coalition of more than 50 senior defence officials from Europe and beyond met in Germany to discuss Ukraine’s war needs, and battle tanks were a prime topic.

Former president Donald Trump is returning to Facebook.

Two years after the social platform banned him from its service in the wake of the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot, the company says that he can now return.

“The suspension was an extraordinary decision taken in extraordinary circumstances, Meta policy chief Nick Clegg wrote in a blog post. “The normal state of affairs is that the public should be able to hear from a former President of the United States, and a declared candidate for that office again, on our platforms. Now that the time period of the suspension has elapsed, the question is not whether we choose to reinstate Mr. Trump’s accounts, but whether there remain such extraordinary circumstances that extending the suspension beyond the original two-year period is justified.“

Clegg adds that the risk has receded, though he adds that the company is putting new “guardrails” in place in case that changes. Those guardrails will include heightened penalties in the event he encourages violence again, including automatic suspensions. For content that is not overtly violent, but delegitimizes elections, Facebook says it may stop the reach of those posts, or revoke some advertising tools for the account.

“We know that any decision we make on this issue will be fiercely criticized,” Clegg added. “Reasonable people will disagree over whether it is the right decision. But a decision had to be made, so we have tried to make it as best we can in a way that is consistent with our values and the process we established in response to the Oversight Board’s guidance.”

Trump was banned from Facebook “indefinitely” on Jan. 7, with the company’s Oversight Board deciding in May that “given the seriousness of the violations and the ongoing risk of violence, Facebook was justified in suspending Mr. Trump’s accounts on January 6 and extending that suspension on January 7,” however, the board added that “it was not appropriate for Facebook to impose an ‘indefinite’ suspension.”

In response, Facebook settled on a two year ban the following month. Executive Nick Clegg wrote at the time that the company would reevaluate the decision in 2023.

“At the end of this period, we will look to experts to assess whether the risk to public safety has receded. We will evaluate external factors, including instances of violence, restrictions on peaceful assembly and other markers of civil unrest,” Clegg wrote. “If we determine that there is still a serious risk to public safety, we will extend the restriction for a set period of time and continue to re-evaluate until that risk has receded.”

Trump’s return to Facebook comes after his account was reinstated at Twitter by owner Elon Musk. Musk restored the account after he conducted an online poll.

While Trump is back on the social platforms, he may be limited in what he can do there. He now has a social platform of his, Truth Social (modeled after Twitter, his preferred platform), and his agreement with the company says that he has to post exclusively on that platform first, and can only post on other platforms hours later.

And if he does post on Facebook or Instagram, whether or not the company takes further action against him, Clegg seemed aware in his blog post that it is expecting to face tough public criticism.

“We are highlighting these rules today because we anticipate that should Mr. Trump choose to resume activity on our platforms, many people will call for us to take action against his account and the content he posts, while many others will be upset if he is suspended again, or if some of his content is not distributed on our platforms,” he wrote. “We want to be as clear as possible now about our policies, so that even in those instances where people will disagree with us, they still understand the rationale for our responses.”

Both series started at the DC Universe streamer before transferring to HBO Max for their third seasons.

Even superheroes can’t defeat the looming threat of a series finale. “Titans” and “Doom Patrol,” two live-action series based on DC Comic book characters, will end after their respective ongoing fourth seasons, IndieWire has confirmed.

The two series have an interesting development history, beginning as original programs for DC Universe, a streaming platform focused on superhero content, launching their first seasons in 2018 (for “Titans”) and 2019 (for “Doom Patrol”). After HBO Max launched, DC Universe was rebooted as a free comics subscription service, and the shows moved to the new streamer. “Titans” premiered its fourth and now final season this November, while “Doom Patrol’s” launched in December; both seasons consists of 12 episodes split into two six-episode parts, with the final batches of episodes set to premiere at unannounced dates.

“While these will be the final seasons of ‘Titans’ and ‘Doom Patrol,’ we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings,” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement. “For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the Titans and Doom Patrol, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”

We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series. We thank Titans showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures. For Doom Patrol, we celebrate showrunner Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson.

Both series were productions of Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, and Geoff Johns executive producing. “Titans” was developed for TV by Berlanti and Johns with Akiva Goldsman, and was based on the titular superhero group, also known as the “Teen Titans.” Brenton Thwaites starred in the series as Dick Grayson, the former sidekick of Batman, as he sets out on his own to form his own team. Other cast members included Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Joshua Orpin, Jay Lycurgo, Franka Potente, and Joseph Morgan. Greg Walker served as showrunner for the series and executive produced with Goldsman and Richard Hatem. Weed Road Pictures produced the series.

“I’m immensely proud of our gifted cast, crew, and writing staff and their efforts in bringing to life all forty nine episodes over the last five plus years. I couldn’t have asked for better partners in Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and HBO Max, and from the beginning, Geoff Johns and Akiva Goldsman,” Walker said in a statement. “I’m incredibly grateful for their unyielding trust throughout this process. Lastly, I have to thank our incredible fans for their continued support, engagement, and the passionate community they’ve built around our show. We have six episodes left to unleash upon the world that we hope will give our beloved characters the creative closure we all know they deserve.”

“Doom Patrol” is based on the characters created in the original comic books by writers Arnold Drake and Bob Haney, and artist Bruno Premiani, and focused on a group of outcasts who received powers via freak accidents and band together to protect the world. The ensemble cast featured Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Matthew Zuk, Riley Shanahan, Joivan Wade, Skye Roberts, and Michelle Gomez, while Brendan Fraser and Matt Bomer provided the voices for two of the characters. Showrunner Jeremy Carver developed the series for television and executive produced with Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson.

“To our wonderfully supportive partners at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and DC Studios, thank you for indulging us these past four seasons,” Carver said in a statement. “Also, what were you smoking? To our brilliant cast, indomitable crew, fearless writing staff and, most of all, to our beautiful fans: thank you all the more. You made this a once-in-a-lifetime ride.”

The news of both show’s end comes during a shake-up in DC content at Warner Bros. Discovery, following the hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-CEOs of DC Studios. The two reportedly have extensive plans to consolidate films, TV shows, and other media starring DC characters, and their clean-up has already lead to actors like Henry Cavill stepping aside from their film roles. That said, some DC shows on HBO Max, such as the animated “Harley Quinn,” are still intact, with that series expected to release a special episode on Valentine’s Day.

Both series started at the DC Universe

In 2021, Memphis rappers Aleza, Glorilla, K Carbon, Slimeroni, and Gloss Up dropped a string of Hitkidd-produced posse cuts that were sparks for the already thriving local rap circuit. They were addictive and electric, like trying to hang with that one tight-knit crew of women who have so many inside jokes and references that they might as well speak their own language—you know, an authentic shit-talking Southern clique that also happens to be one of the coldest rap crews out right now. In reality, it isn’t quite as organic as that (as individuals, they’re still trying to figure it out), but the chemistry is real. The one who has got it down for sure is Glorilla, who dropped two of the great rap singles of last year with “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” and “Tomorrow.” Fellow Memphis rap darling Gloss Up is almost there as well. Unlike Glorilla’s mean-mugging gut-punches, Gloss has a Young Dolph-inspired way of laughing in the face of problems. “Wanna be an opp so bad, damn hoe get out the way,” she raps on last year’s “Sorry Not Sorry,” shooing away a potential rival like a gnat. (In the video, she even says this with her baby on her hip.) Gloss hands out dismissive tongue-lashings with a sweetly Southern smile on her face; this naturally unbothered attitude is what boosts her new mixtape Before the Gloss Up above the formulaic beats of a major label debut.

When it comes to molding new rap stars, the Atlanta-based imprint Quality Control, who signed Gloss Up last year, has got it down to a science. In Joe Coscarelli’s 2022 book Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story, the label’s co-founder Coach K talks about the process of star-making tactically, sometimes uncomfortably so. Prior to Before the Gloss Up, her freewheeling sensibility made it seem as if her songs were recorded on a whim, on days when she was in the mood to break a few spirits. That isn’t lost here, but the behind-the-scenes factors are apparent. From the obligatory piano-driven motivation rap outro that appears on mixtapes from every region to a sanitized version of the increasingly popular Detroit sound on “From Cross the Way,” record executives were clearly ticking boxes.

But label constraints don’t drown out her charisma. Even when certain songs are familiar, they don’t coast on it. For example, Babyface Ray’s “Sincerely Face” seemingly inspired “Lemon Peppa,” but the breezy sound becomes Gloss’ own with a flood of disrespectful takedowns. When they leave her mouth, they come across as feel-good barbs: “Yeah that’s my nigga, I still put him in the friend zone.” The ride-or-die anthem “Hold Me Down” feels like it would have fit on Peezy’s Only Built 4 Diamond Links; her booming voice has a warm edge, perfect for a little sentimentality. She even manages to do the impossible, elevating the generic Moneybagg Yo-core of “Revenge” with forceful and inspired jawing. The second time she snaps “Smackin’ bitches ’bout that nigga” in a pitch-shifted twist, it’s like the thought just makes her day.

Before the Gloss Up hits a stride when Quality Control’s involvement is muted; not cocincidentally, that’s when her troop and Hitkidd are in the orbit. On “Mad 304,” the Memphis producer’s roaring instrumental inspires Gloss Up to bring out a short burst of Gangsta Boo and La Chat-style smack talk. Aleza, K Carbon, and Slimeroni join Gloss in stomping on a couple playthings’ feelings on “Eeny Meeny Miny Moe.” And on “Bestfrenn,” Gloss and Glorilla throw warning shots at all grannies, cousins, and aunties with slick tongues. “Bestfrenn” is an ode to their friendship, one wild enough that the bank robbing (and ribbing) friends of the classic 1996 crime film Set It Off can probably relate. Despite some major label interference, at least Before the Gloss Up hangs onto the most important thing: Gloss Up talking shit with her friends.

“Doom Patrol” which premiered in 2019 follows a team of traumatized and downtrodden superheroes, each of whom has suffered a horrible accident that gave them superhuman abilities but also left them scarred and disfigured. The members of the team have found their purpose through The Chief and have come together to investigate some of the world’s weirdest phenomena. Part support group, part superhero team, The Doom Patrol is a band of superpowered freaks fighting for a world that wants nothing to do with them. the series features Jane (Diane Guerrero), Rita Farr (April Bowlby), Vic Stone (Joivan Wade), Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer / Matthew Zuk), Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser / Riley Shanahan), and Chief (Timothy Dalton).

Both shows are currently on their 4th season which will be their last. The shows are produced by Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess, and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson.

“While these will be the final seasons of “Titans” and “Doom Patrol”, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings,” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement to THR. “We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series. We thank “Titans” showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the “Titans” and “Doom Patrol”, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that amid all the changes with DC Entertainment the producers of both “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” wrote proper endings for their current seasons so as to not leave fans in a lurch just in case. With James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC, the duo is planning a new roster of films and TV series which will eventually result in the decision to end both shows, as HBO Max will soon be integrated with Discovery+, and the platform has been dumping content.

“To our wonderfully supportive partners at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and DC Studios, thank you for indulging us these past four seasons,” Carver said. “Also, what were you smoking? To our brilliant cast, indomitable crew, fearless writing staff and, most of all, to our beautiful fans: thank you all the more. You made this a once-in-a-lifetime ride.

With “Doom Patrol”, “Titans” and “The Flash” ending, Berlanti’s CW shows will soon only include “Superman & Lois” and “Gotham Knights” (due in March). Berlanti is also reworking “Green Lantern” for HBO Max, he also has the drama “The Girls on the Bus” starring Melissa Benoist and Mark Consuelos in the works.

“I’m immensely proud of our gifted cast, crew and writing staff and their efforts in bringing to life all 49 episodes over the last five-plus years,” Titans exec producer Greg Walker said. “I couldn’t have asked for better partners in Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and HBO Max, and from the beginning, Geoff Johns and Akiva Goldsman. I’m incredibly grateful for their unyielding trust throughout this process. Lastly, I have to thank our incredible fans for their continued support, engagement, and the passionate community they’ve built around our show. We have six episodes left to unleash upon the world that we hope will give our beloved characters the creative closure we all know they deserve.”

“Titans” and “Doom Patrol” immediately became favorites amongst DC fans, because of its comic accuracy and how enjoyable both shows were. They both balanced each other out. While “Titans” was more serious and intense, “Doom Patrol” was a little wackier. “Titans” is grim and dark but “Doom Patrol” is fun and comedic, still both shows developed a fan base that have followed the crazy and intense adventures of these two super teams for the past 4 seasons, and have fallen in love with these characters.

Stay tuned for the final 6 episodes of “Titans” and “Doom Patrol”.

SVU gotta smooch already. Mulder and Scully, Booth and Bones, Benson and Stabler. Partners with undeniable chemistry make for good TV. And while everyone’s favorite FBI Agents all got to hook up, Law & Order: SVU‘s two main detectives have yet to get past long looks and intimate hugs. Until now?

Their relationship has been through so many ups and downs, twists and turns, and since SVU has been on for approximately one million episodes, we figured it might be helpful to catch up on where things stand. Here’s the latest:

They’re both cops, but they’re not partners

For the first chunk of SVU’s run, Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) were partners, though they also worked with other detectives like Tutuola, Carisi, and Munch. In seasons seven and eight, they realize they are too close, and try to work with other partners, but can’t…until season thirteen, when Christopher Meloni left the show and Det. Stabler just peaces out to Europe. A decade later, he returns to NYC as part of an organized crime unit, and while their paths continue to cross, they’re each in their own department (and their own show).

NBC

Benson is single, one kid

Though she’s had serious relationships, Olivia Benson is currently unattached, and has never been married. But she does have a family; she legally adopted her son Noah on season 15.

Stabler is a widow, five kids

One of the events that drew Elliot and Olivia back together was when a car bomb—intended for Stabler—killed his wife Kathy in the 2021 season. Previously, the two had a sometimes strained marriage, but with five kids together were definitely a family. Since Stabler was married before the start of his partnership with Benson, this is the first time that he’s been single with her in his life.

The Divine Dragon Awakens

Fire Emblem Engage is the latest mainline title in the long-running strategy franchise from Nintendo.  After the critical and commercial success of its predecessor, Fire Emblem : Three Houses, the direction of Engage is like a shock to the system.  While the previous game is an exploration of revisionist history, political turmoil, and overcoming trauma, Engage hearkens back to a simpler-story.  Much like recent nostalgia-driven forms of entertainment, previous main characters from throughout the series join the fray.  While this results in a story that is certainly a step down from Three Houses, its clear the focus is one the core game play Fire Emblem is known for.

Engage in Strategic Battles

Fire Emblem Engage

Courtesy of Nintendo/Intelligent Systems

The Engage mechanic is the defining feature of this latest Fire Emblem entry.  Utilizing rings containing the spirits of previous Fire Emblem characters, the player gains access to a variety of game changing abilities.  While this may make them seem broken, a variety of other game play innovations keep them in check.  One of which being the returning weapon triangle.  While previous games gave units with a weapon advantage better accuracy against foes, Engage changes this up in a far more prominent way.  Weapon advantage allows units to inflict the break status upon the enemy, preventing them from counterattacking through the next combat encounter.

Aside from the reworked and newly introduced mechanics, the area Engage undoubtedly improves upon from its predecessor is the map design.  While Three Houses has largely forgettable maps, many of which are visually similar, Engage features far more layouts, visuals, and side-objectives throughout.  Even early on, the more intricate maps allow for far more challenging game play and… ahem… engaging battles.  Simply put, Engage’s core game play is among the series best, and a vast improvement of Three Houses.

Fixing Garreg Mach Monastery

Fire Emblem Engage

Courtesy of Nintendo/Intelligent Systems

Fire Emblem : Three Houses includes a free roaming feature set at a giant monastery.  This feature essentially introduces social sim aspects to the game, allowing the player to interact with their character roster in ways other games were unable to.  This feature is fun for a time, but as the game goes on, it becomes more of a drag.  It overall kills the pace of the game, and intrudes a lot on what is supposed to be a tactical-RPG.

From a game play perspective, Engage’s Somniel fixes all of that.  Removing the teaching feature which over-complicated unit progression, and leaving the base as an optional feature, Engage’s Somniel is what the Monastery should have been.  The Somniel is entirely optional, now acting as a break area filled with various mini-games that can give small boosts for the next battle.  From a social sim perspective, it falters though.  This isn’t due to anything game play wise, however.  No, rather it ties into perhaps the biggest issue Fire Emblem Engage has, the writing.

While Game Play Flies High, Story Falls Short

While the trailers of Fire Emblem Engage made it clear that the story wouldn’t be the main focus, it’s still surprising to see just how simple the story has been made.  Unlike some of the Fire Emblem narrative highlights such as Path of Radiance, Genealogy of the Holy War, or Three Houses, Engage instead opts for the more traditional Fire Emblem stories.  Still, what often makes those simpler stories effective are the cast of memorable characters.  Unfortunately, this too is an area Engage surprisingly falls short of.

Despite the colorful, vivid designs, many of these characters are remarkably one note.  That’s not to say unlikable, and there are characters that are highlights; some stand outs include Ivy, Diamant, Chloe.  Still, a few stand outs isn’t enough to make this game something easy to remember.  Even the returning characters from previous games are a mixed bag.  While some characters don’t leave much of an impact, others such as Sigurd and Marth manage to work well as solid supporting characters.

It’s partly why, despite staying enthralled from game play alone, the story really hampers this game.  No amount of light-hearted, self aware humor can distract from how uninteresting many of these characters are.  It’s why, despite the Somniel working better from a game play perspective, it’s not as interesting an experience as the Monastery.

An Unexpected Highlight

Fire Emblem Engage

Courtesy of Nintendo/Intelligent Systems

Strangely the main character, Alear, is one of the better characters in the game.  Typically, Avatar characters have had a mixed bag.  Corrin was poorly written and had no arc or interesting personality.  Byleth, by design, has no interesting personality.  While this works for the lore of Three Houses, it creates a disconnect with the player.  Alear meanwhile has a defined arc and personality, as she learns to find the strength within herself, and become the hero so many see her as.  While she’s nowhere near the best character in the series, it’s still appreciated they tried to make her an interesting character in her own right.

Overall Thoughts – Fire Emblem Stays Strong

Upon its release, Fire Emblem Engage is now among the most divisive games in the series among Fire Emblem fans.  Many fans who came in with Three Houses are expressing disappointment.  This is due to the game seemingly abandoning what made them love that game so much.  Long time fans meanwhile are more willing to accept this game. It’s because this game goes back to the core game play values of Fire Emblem, despite the less than stellar story.

What it really comes down to is this, Fire Emblem Engage is the more fun game to play.  However, Fire Emblem : Three Houses is the more interesting game to experience.  While Engage is more concerned with making a fun, cartoony, tactical experience, Three Houses is more concerned with making you care about the grand, epic world and complex characters that have been lovingly crafts.  Both are ultimately equal in quality, but for different reasons.  While ideally, Fire Emblem Engage should’ve had a more interesting story on top of the amazing game play, the same could be said of Three Houses needing better game play on top of the amazing story.

Ultimately, it comes down to preference, but as it stands, Fire Emblem Engage is an excellent game that celebrates the series history, even if the story and characters are mediocre.

FINAL RATING 8/10.

A good start to the Fan Appreciation Party June 2nd in Las Vegas, as already 1/4th of the spots filled up yesterday. The party can hold around 80-90 total in the room (it’s in the same room it’s been for 5 of the 7 years at Mandalay Bay), so if you’re interested in coming, it’s open to anyone. There is no charge. It’s just a thank you to all you readers and listeners who have supported the site and the podcast over the years. Always a good time. Open beer and wine bar, food, and just a 3 hr or so party where we can chat and mingle and give away a few prizes. This year I definitely think there will be some recent podcast guests who will be at the party. Not sure who, if any, from Bachelor Nation will be there. But I’m certain some of the people you’ve heard on the podcast within the last few months will be there. Just don’t want to jinx anything at this point. Whatever the case, like I’ve said, it’s always been a good time, so if you’re interested in coming, email me at steve@realitysteve.com. If you’re flying in, a copy of your flight itinerary gets you on the guest list. Driving in, it’s a copy of your hotel booking. If you’re a Vegas local, just gimmie the names of everyone in your party coming, and just promise you won’t flake.

So it’s been floating around the internet since September when Greer Blitzer was announced as a possible contestant on Zach’s season, that she had some very troubling tweets from 2016, where she was defending a person who appeared at a party in blackface as Tupac. So yesterday, Greer issued an apology on her IG story. Once again, these are just written statements, just words, and this apology isn’t for me. But if we’re ranking apologies that contestants have had to make in recent years, I’d say this could’ve been done better. First off, it was on her IG story, meaning her apology is gone after 24 hours. If you were really serious about apologizing, wouldn’t you keep this on your IG feed? Secondly, she never says her behavior was racist. Uses words like “wrong,” “uneducated,” and “ignorant,” but leaves out the most important word. And lastly, she makes a point to say what hurts her the most is not that the screenshots resurfaced, but that “she ever shared those harmful opinions at all.” What about even having those thoughts in the first place? Like I said, could’ve been better. But, she’s apologized, and lets see her behavior from this point forward to determine if she has really changed. That’s all we can do. Yet once again, a simple vetting process by the show fails. It’s unreal how much they don’t care to do their job.

Also back in September when the potential women for Zach’s season was posted on the Bachelor Facebook page, it was brought to my attention that Olivia Miller had plenty of pictures on her IG, and had tweeted a month earlier, about her boyfriend Mike Renner, who lasted 3 or 4 episodes on Becca’s season. Because Mike was a former podcast guest, I reached out to him directly to ask what the situation was. He said that they’d broken up and a week later she was reached out to by the show. And she asked him if he was ok with her going on the show and he was. Well, yesterday Olivia took to her IG to hard launch their relationship as they’ve been dating since she got back from filming, but she couldn’t say anything until she was officially “eliminated” from the show.

Remember in yesterday’s column where I said I’d heard of 3 women this season that got back with guys once filming ended but didn’t want to name any names since it was basically impossible to prove? Well, this was one of them I’d heard, so her hard launch yesterday confirmed it. I’m pretty sure the other two I heard are also true. Maybe those will become public on social media at some point.

Note: Deadline presents the 44th episode of its video series Take Two, in which Pete Hammond and Todd McCarthy tackle the artistry of films just opening in theaters every weekend. Each has reviewed and written about the craft for decades and built a remarkable breadth of knowledge of films past and present. What we hoped for when we asked them to do this was a concise, mature and thoughtful conversation comparable to what we saw from Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel.

Now that anticipation for the Oscar nominations for the 95th annual Academy Awards are in the rear-view mirror, Deadline’s we put a critical eye on what was good, and not so good about this year’s class. With a mix of films refreshingly spanning the box office tallies — from $2 billion (Avatar: The Way off Water) to $27,000 (To Leslie) and all points in between — the nominations seem to be “everywhere all at once” — something for everyone indeed. And speaking of Everything Everywhere All at Once, can that film now be considered the solid frontrunner with its leading 11 nominations and much momentum, or are there major challengers and challenges ahead for A24’s little engine that could?

The Fabelmans started the season in front, got stalled a bit, and now seems to be on the comeback trail. Is Steven Spielberg headed for a third Best Director statuette? What film out there could upset the apple cart here and take over the race in the end? We offer a few ideas, and talk about that remarkable grassroots campaign that brought Andrea Riseborough (for that aforementioned film that grossed $27,000) all the way to the Dolby Theatre come March. Does she have another upset in the offing?

The police chief in the California city where 20 people were shot — 11 fatally — at a ballroom dance hall defended his decision not to warn the public for hours that a killer was on the loose, saying Wednesday he didn’t have enough information to effectively alert residents.

Monterey Park Chief Scott Wiese said police in the region were alerted and it didn’t make sense to send out a warning at night to residents in the predominantly Asian American city even after learning the suspect may have targeted a nearby dance club after the massacre.

“I’m not going to send my officers door to door waking people up and telling them that we’re looking for a male Asian in Monterey Park,” Wiese told The Associated Press. “It’s not going to do us any good.”

The shooting at Star Ballroom Dance Studio at 10:22 p.m. Saturday occurred just an hour or so after tens of thousands of people attended Lunar New Year festivities in the city. The public wasn’t notified of the mass shooting for five hours, raising questions about why an alert wasn’t sent to people in the area.

Huu Can Tran, 72, who was said to frequent the dance hall and fancied himself as an instructor, carried out the shooting with a submachine gun-style semi-automatic weapon with large capacity magazine, authorities said.

Tran fled in a white van before officers arrived at the scene of chaotic carnage and about 20 minutes later he entered another dance hall in nearby Alhambra, where an employee confronted and disarmed him during a brief struggle.

Chris Grollnek, an active shooter expert, said police never should have waited so long to warn the public about the possible threat posed by a gunman at large. The city had access to an automated alert system and even putting out a little information would have been better than nothing.

“They should have gotten the word out sooner,” Grollnek said. “I think everybody’s lucky he didn’t make it to a third location.”

Wiese, who had been sworn in as chief two days before Saturday’s shooting, said he quickly learned about the second incident at the Lai Lai Ballroom but it wasn’t immediately clear the two were connected.

Patrol officers in Monterey Park and Alhambra traded details of their two incidents, prompting investigators to look into a potential connection, Wiese said.

“We put that together pretty quickly but we still had very limited information,” he said.

Wiese said they were piecing together information from some 40 witnesses — many of whom didn’t speak English — and didn’t want to broadcast incorrect information. He said that notifying other local, state and federal agencies gave them the ability to get the word out.

A sheriff’s official confirmed the fatalities to the AP shortly before 2:36 a.m. Sunday but it wasn’t until roughly an hour later — some five hours after the shooting — that law enforcement first mentioned a suspect was at-large.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said his department’s decision to release information was “strategic” but promised a review of the timeline.

“When we started putting out public information, the priority was to get this person into custody,” Luna said Monday. His department, which is handling the investigation, hasn’t released information about the shooting since Monday.

The first news conference about the shooting was held Sunday morning by a sheriff’s captain. Several hours later, Tran was found dead in his van from a self-inflicted gunshot, authorities said. A handgun was found in the vehicle.

The slayings during what should have been joyful Lunar New Year celebrations sent ripples of fear through Asian American communities that were already dealing with increased hatred and violence directed at them.

Less than 48 hours later, a gunman in Northern California shot eight fellow farmworkers — killing seven — at mushroom farms in Half Moon Bay. The shooter was of Chinese descent and most of the victims were Asian.

Outside the locked gates of Star Dance Studio, a popular venue for older Asian Americans, a memorial grew higher Wednesday with mounds of bouquets and balloons.

Sabine Slome, who works as a pharmaceutical representative in the city, wept after paying her respects and leaving behind flowers.

“I just pray that we will learn from this,” she said. “It’s just heartbreaking. How many more shootings?”

Hearts were scribbled in pink and red chalk in the parking lot where the first victim was killed in her car.

Large photos of seven of the victims were propped up and framed by white roses. Flowers framed names of the other four dead.

“This is the place where we go out to eat,” said Ryan Yamada, who was with his 74-year-old mother. ”We can’t just pretend this is some other people’s problem.”

Vice President Kamala Harris visited the memorial in the dance studio parking lot on Wednesday, pausing as she passed by each of the large, rose-framed photos and names of the victims. She placed a large bouquet of yellow and white flowers alongside scores of others.

Speaking briefly to reporters, Harris relayed sentiments on behalf of President Joe Biden and called for stricter gun control laws.

“Tragically we keep saying the same things,” Harris said. “Congress must act.”

“Can they do something? Yes. Should they do something? Yes. Will they do something? That is where we all must speak up,” Harris said.

Pope Francis was among those offering condolences, saying in a message to the Los Angeles archbishop that he “implores the divine gifts of healing and consolation upon the injured and bereaved.”

Wiese said he’s seen a lot during his three decade career, but some of the first officers on the scene were rookies who had never faced such carnage and the trauma will be hard to forget.

Paramedics were loading the wounded into ambulances and treating others inside when the chief arrived. There were bodies every 10 feet: some slumped over tables, others sprawled on the dance floor.

“It’s hard to put words to it,” he said. “It takes your breath away when you see it. And it kind of burns the image into your brain.”

More than seven months after it was unveiled, the world’s first 1.5TB microSD card, Micron’s MTSD1T5ANC8MS-1WT, has landed, well almost. A handful of tech wholesalers have listed the card otherwise known as the i400 on their website and depending on how many you need and which territory you are buying from, customers may have to wait for at least four months. Mouser, Arrow and Avnet (plus its subsidiaries Farnell (opens in new tab), Newark (opens in new tab), Element14) have already listed it with Newark being the cheapest at Newark, only $420.53, a price that includes free delivery.

Buy at least 12,000 of them to see the price drop to $381 (with a total cost of more than $4.5m), not a bad price for 18PB (yes, that’s Petabytes) of solid state storage that should weigh, no more than 4Kg (without the packaging of course). In case you were wondering, this microSD card costs about the same as its weight in 0.125 carat diamond ($1.1m per Kg).

Equally important is the data on these cards so bear in mind that a microSD is smaller than a fingernail. We recommend that you backup your data using a cloud storage solution (although you won’t find any free cloud storage that can do 1.5TB).

What comes next?

Micron was the first out of the with a 1TB card. The C200 is almost four years old and it’s only in the past few months that the average price – and relative availability of – 1TB MicroSD cards has improved. But how long will 1.5TB capacity remain the king of the hill remains anyone’s guess; Kioxia unveiled a 2TB Exceria Plus prototype back in September 2022 but while a tentative 2023 launch has been muttered, it is likely to depend on market conditions (i.e. if there’s enough demand for it).

For those interested in purchasing it though, just bear in mind that it has a formatted capacity of 1,430,511 Megabytes. Samsung and Kingston, two of the largest solid state storage vendors, have yet to release any microSD cards with a 1TB or higher capacity.

At the time of writing, the cheapest 1TB microSD card is a Silicon Power model at $87.99 (opens in new tab), about a third of the price per TB of Micron’s i40. Amazon has a lot of other fake 1TB microSD cards on its marketplace and this endemic problem hasn’t been resolved yet. Should you buy a microSD card, make sure it’s one of these 14 brands: Samsung, Kingston, SP/Silicon Power, Teamgroup, Sandisk, WD, PNY, Lexar, Inland, Gigastone, Patriot, Transcend, Amazon Basics and MicroCenter. We wouldn’t trust any others.

Lockup

Director: SG Charles

Cast: Vaibhav, Venkat Prabhu, Easwari Rao, Vani Bhojan, Poorna

SG Charles’ debut work, a thriller, LockUp in Tamil is yet another to bypass the usual theatrical road for a streaming platform. Just out on ZEE5, the film is an unflinching look at police conspiracy, which does not stop at encounter killings. It steps into the so-considered hallowed premises of a police station, whose inmates’ ruthless ambition to earn unlawful money and unwarranted promotions push them into killing one another!

Vaibhav’s Vasanth is all set to get married to his girlfriend played by Vani Bhojan. But her father insists that Vasanth, who is just a police constable, must get his promotion as sub-inspector. Otherwise, no wedding bells, the old man is firm, and our poor hero in khaki is in a quandary. He needs to crack at least one major case in order to go up the ladder.

Vasanth takes the help of his immediate boss, Moorthy (Venkat Prabhu), who uses the younger cop in nefarious activities, and this includes “supplying” women to a top policeman. The movie weaves, much like a turbulent thriller, through intra-cop rivalries, murders (one committed by a girl barely into her teens), petty thefts and video blackmail (at least intended) with Easwari Rao taking charge of a particularly difficult case – which looks like suicide, but is apparently not.

Unfortunately, performances are poor, except Venkat Prabhu, who does fit into his uniform and uses it to push himself up, trampling upon others on the way. Traces of brightness are visible in Rao’s role as a tough woman police officer. But when she gets down to investigate, the whole exercise appears amateurish – not a patch on some of the murder mysteries we have seen in works like Raat Akeli Hai. There is an unnecessary fight sequence in Lockup– merely to show Vaibhav’s heroism (!). And how come, he as a mere police constable is hardly ever in uniform. There are issues relating to continuity. All these drive Charles’ thriller away from the realm of authenticity.

Rating: 2/5

Top Chef is heading across the pond

Women filmmakers are taking the reins of their destinies in Hollywood, with many stepping behind the camera and creating stories universal to the human condition. But it has been a slow-moving machine to see these talents recognized at the Oscars, especially in the best director category.

In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, there have been 591 films nominated for the top prize for best picture. Eighteen of those films were helmed by a woman director. While grotesque in its mere statistic, we see an uptick in female-led stories being told and gaining notoriety.

For the 2023 Oscars, the highlights for women include:

The best picture nod for “Women Talking” represents the seventh for Dede Gardner (and the sixth for Jeremy Kleiner). Together, they won the award for “12 Years a Slave” (2013) and “Moonlight” (2016), and shared noms for “Selma” (2014), “The Big Short” (2015) and “Vice” (2018). Gardner was also previously nominated for “The Tree of Life” (2011). Also a producer, Frances McDormand received her second nom for best picture, previously winning for “Nomadland” (2020).

Although not directed by a woman, “Elvis” producer Catherine Martin becomes the seventh woman with nominations in three or more award categories following Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Emerald Fennell, Barbra Streisand, Fran Walsh and Chloé Zhao (4). Martin is also nominated for production design and costume design. Mandy Walker, the D.P. of “Elvis,” is the third woman nominated for cinematography after Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) and Ari Wegner (“The Power of the Dog”).

The late Lina Wertmüller, who became the first woman Oscar-nominated for directing with “Seven Beauties” (1975), was a trailblazer for the category in what is arguably one of the strongest film years in the Academy. However, her film didn’t ultimately land one of the five coveted spots for best picture, in favor of eventual winners “Rocky,” “All the President’s Men,” “Bound for Glory,” “Network,” and “Taxi Driver.” The first movie wouldn’t come until Randa Haines’ “Children of a Lesser God” (1986).

Below, find all 19 women-directed films nominated for best picture.

Women filmmakers are taking the reins of

It’s no secret that movies are expensive to make. Today’s blockbuster hits routinely exceed the $100 million mark. If you’re an independent filmmaker, your spending plan is likely far from that.

Indie filmmakers need to get creative and be resourceful with their financing. Every dollar matters when creating the next “Blair Witch Project” or “Paranormal Activity.”

Use these six ways to fund your next indie film successfully.

1. Investors

The first way to find funding for an independent film is to search for private investors. This method is complex because they consider movies to be high-risk. In their minds, the odds are low for profit-making. It’s critical to create a compelling and worthwhile script so people have a reason to believe in you and your production.

Exhaust every option possible for funding when searching for investors. In the best-case scenario, filmmakers find people passionate about movies who want to see newcomers succeed in the industry. Other stakeholders may use your film as a way to diversify their portfolio. Think about any relatives or connections you have who can finance your film dreams.

2. Grants

Another strategy to secure financing is to look for grants. These funds are ideal because filmmakers can accept them without the burden of paying somebody back. It’s best to think about grants like a donation. They are an excellent way to start your production but may require you to fulfill particular criteria.

One resource you can use is Film Independent. This nonprofit organization awards nearly $1 million in grants annually for filmmakers to advance their projects. Film Independent has various fellowships funded by donors who award money based on certain requirements. For example, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awards filmmakers who create real stories about science and technology. The Cayton-Goldrich Family Foundation Fellowship donates funds to Jewish filmmakers.

3. Tax Credits

The next approach for funding an indie film is to research tax credits. Filmmakers in the United States, Canada and other nations can take advantage of incentives for filming in particular locations. These tax breaks aim to stimulate economies and boost tourism in various places, especially during the offseason when there are fewer tourists.

Most states have a tax incentive program for filmmakers, but it’s essential to research the requirements before beginning production. There may be a minimum threshold to qualify. For example, an independent film in California has to spend at least $1 million to receive the transferable tax credit. Neighboring Arizona has no minimum spending requirement.

4. Personal Finance

You may need to resort to a personal loan if a gap in funding exists. This option is tricky because you’ll risk your money and credit. However, it’ll be worth it if your production is as successful as you plan. You could also use money from your pocket to get the show started. Financing the film by yourself is risky but has its advantages. You’ll start the project sooner and worry less about outside forces influencing your movie.

There are a few things to consider if you elect to take out a loan. First, filmmakers should assess their current debts and pay off some of them before taking on more. Start by paying off high-interest loans, such as a car note. Absolving yourself from this debt can raise your credit score and improve your standing with the banks.

Paying off the high-interest loan first falls under the debt avalanche strategy. Followers of this method organize a list of their debts and make minimum monthly payments for each. Then they allocate extra funds to pay them off by interest rate. The avalanche continues until all the debt is gone.

5. Crowdfunding

Another option for funding an independent film is crowdfunding. This method is commonplace among filmmakers who need financial assistance for their movies. Modern crowdfunding apps like GoFundMe, Patreon and Indiegogo make it much easier to source funds for any projects in media. Donors may only contribute a few dollars at a time, but these donations add up quickly.

Filmmakers should heavily utilize social media like Twitter, Tik Tok, Reddit and more to share their crowdfunding links. Going on YouTube can help you reach a broad audience. A smartly targeted campaign can make a crowdfunding link go viral with a plethora of donors. One way to incentivize small donors is by giving them a cut of profits, making them small investors. However, filmmakers should be wary if they’re on a tight budget.

6. Product Placement

Product placement is a creative way to garner funds for an indie film. These subtle advertisements are widespread in the industry, and filmmakers can use them to accrue money without interfering too much with production. Some product placements are more evident than others and lead to an association between them and the movie. For example, seeing an Aston Martin makes many people think about the James Bond films.

Sometimes, movies center on a particular product and feel like a two-hour advertisement. For example, the Lego and Transformer films are ads for their respective toys. However, some product placements like the DeLorean in “Back to the Future” don’t turn out well for different reasons.

Financing the Next Breakout Indie Film

Up-and-coming filmmakers are critical for the movie industry. They provide fresh ideas and can produce some of the best productions on the lowest budgets. They’re rare, but some films like “Tarnation” or “Paranormal Activity” have meager budgets but garner exceptional box office revenue.

If you want to create the next big hit, you’ll need funds. Use these six ways to secure financing for your production.

THE US has agreed to send 31 battle tanks to Ukraine just hours after Russia threatened nuclear strikes on the West.

President Joe Biden announced today the US will be sending 31 advanced M1 Abrams tanks worth over £300 million, as part of the western effort to support Kyiv.

Biden said the battle tanks are to help Ukrainian fighters “improve their ability to manoeuvre in open terrain.”

The Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the US for the “powerful decision” and tweeted: “It’s an important step on the path to victory.”

The US move follows Germany’s decision to send 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks to war-torn Ukraine.

Bowing to international pressure, and calls from President  Zelensky, German chancellor Olaf Scholz said will send the tanks to Ukraine, plus spare parts and ammo, and lift a ban on other countries sending theirs.

The head of Ukraine’s presidential administration Andriy Yermak hailed the tank announcements as a “historic day” and wrote on Telegram: “One of those days that will determine our future victory.”

But the move sparked fury among Russian propagandists who issued a chilling nuclear warning to Germany.

A high-profile Putin mouthpiece demanded Berlin’s Bundestag parliament should be reduced to radioactive ash in retaliation.

While Moscow TV pundit Yevgeny Satanovsky said warheads should be launched at the centre of German democracy.

The goal is for Germany and its allies to provide Ukraine with 88 of the German-made Leopards, ahead of a possible spring counter-offensive.

“This is the result of intensive consultations, once again, with our allies and international partners,” Chancellor Scholz said in an address to German lawmakers.

Scholz spoke on the phone with US President Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and agreed to continue military support to Ukraine, the German chancellery said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Norway will also join other European countries and will send Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine as part of Western aid, its defence minister announced Wednesday.

Speaking in an interview with Norwegian public television NRK the country’s defence minister Bjorn Arild Gram said: “Norway and the government support the donation of battle tanks to Ukraine. Norway will take part.”

The UK is already sending 14 Challenger 2s, answering Zelenksy’s plea for more modern weaponry.

Altogether, France, the UK, the US, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden will send hundreds of tanks and heavily armoured vehicles to support Ukraine.

Germany’s Leopards, fielded by armies across Europe, are widely seen as the best option as they are available in large numbers and easy to deploy and maintain.

Around 2,000 Leopard 2 tanks are in use by Ukraine’s allies.

Other countries that use Leopards include Canada, Sweden and the Netherlands, which have all sent weapons to Ukraine.

Tank maker Rheinmetall said it could offer 51 Leopard 2 and 88 older Leopard 1 tanks over the next 12 months.

Atlantic Records has revealed the first single and album tracklist from “Daisy Jones & the Six,” the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series about a fictional ’70s band of the same name, along with its official teaser trailer.

Based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel, “Daisy Jones & the Six” follows “the rise and precipitous fall of a renowned rock band,” according to the show’s official logline. Now, fans of the book will get to listen to the band’s music for the first time through lead single “Regret Me,” a dreamy duet between Jones (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin). Keough and Claflin’s voices blend together breezily over an instrumental that evokes the prime of ’70s rock ‘n roll, singing: “You regret me and I regret you/ You couldn’t handle your liquor and you can’t see the truth.”

“Regret Me” is featured in the limited series’ official teaser trailer, which also debuted on Wednesday. The clip shows glimpses of the band on tour and recording together, highlighting the tumultuous relationship between Keough and Claflin’s characters, as well as a look at the series’ documentary style. “Look, I know that I said that I would tell you everything,” Daisy Jones says during an interview scene. “But how much of everything do you really want to know?”

The release of “Regret Me” also comes with the announcement of “Aurora,” the band’s 11-song debut album that arrives with the show’s premiere on March 3. Along with Keough and Claflin, “Daisy Jones & the Six” stars Suki Waterhouse, Will Harrison, Josh Whitehouse and Sebastian Chacon, who became a band both on-screen and off.

The production of “Aurora” was helmed by Grammy-winning songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills at L.A.’s iconic Sound City Studios, with co-writing credits from Marcus Mumford, Phoebe Bridgers and Jackson Browne. Frequent Bridgers collaborator Tony Berg provided additional production, and the album features instrumentalists from Rilo Kiley, the Who, Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, David Bowie, Elton John, Jeff Beck and the Wallflowers.

“Creating the library of music for ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ was an experience I’ll never forget,” Mills said in a statement. “I am grateful that, among other things, it afforded me an opportunity to collaborate with so many of my peers, and also some of my heroes.”

Jenkins Reid added, “We finally have ‘Aurora.’ A stunning, nostalgic, timeless album that captures the drama, pathos and yearning of the band’s zenith and nadir all in one. A snapshot of time, intoxicating and dangerous. That delicious moment that you know can’t last… Daisy Jones and the Six are real. And they are better than my wildest dreams.”

As Mike Pence became the third present or former White House official to be caught mishandling classified documents this week, “The Late Late Show With James Corden” host James Corden couldn’t help but wonder who else out there might be taking high-level secrets home with them when leaving the White House.

“Even more classified documents have been found. This time, it was at the Indiana home of former vice president Mike Pence. Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if I have classified documents in my house!” Corden said. “What is happening?”

News broke Tuesday that about a dozen documents containing confidential information were found at Pence’s home. According to two letters Pence’s counsel sent to the National Archives, a “small number” of classified documents were discovered on Jan. 16 at the former vice president’s home. Two days later, his team notified the National Archives, who then notified the Justice Department. FBI agents retrieved the documents from Pence, and his team turned over additional boxes to the National Archives, as well.

“Is everyone just handed a box when they leave the White House? Like, ‘Thanks for coming, here’s some state secrets,’” Corden continued, incredulously.

The “Late Late Show” host then joked that he wouldn’t be surprised with every politician in our nation’s capitol is gifted with some classified documents to bring home with them. But his thesis came with one hilarious exception: Vermont senator and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

“At this point, there are so many people, I just assume every politician has top secret documents in their house, right?” Corden said. “Except for Bernie Sanders, who left his at the park under the watchful eye of a few pigeons.”

Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja are proud parents to Vayu.

Anand Ahuja is missing his wife Sonam Kapoor and their little one Vayu. He recently shared an unseen photo of them.

Sonam Kapoor welcomed a baby boy last year with her husband Ahuja. Time and again, the proud parents often share glimpses of their little one, without revealing his face. Today, Anand shared an unseen photo of the mother-son duo. Sharing the photo, he captioned with Kahlil Gibran’s verses on children. The verses read, “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself…They come through you but not from you,..And though they are with you yet they belong not to you….You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts….You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams…”.

Take a look:

“You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you…For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday…You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth…The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.” #KhalilGibran #OnChildren..”

On a closing note he shared, “I read this years ago and have always remembered it. Saved it so I could always refer to it and now so grateful to put it into practice w @sonamkapoor … missing you both too much. #VayusParents #EverydayPhenomenal ”.

Sonam looked cute in striped pyjamas as she hugged her son with all the love and affection. On seeing the photo, she took to the comments section and wrote, “Love you so much #everydayphenomenal”. Meanwhile, Sonam’s sister Rhea Kapoor wrote, “Happiest boy ❤️”

S.S. Rajamouli found himself in awe that James Cameron loved and analyzed his work when he had a very warm conversation with him.

One of Netflix’s runaway hits of the year was the Bollywood action epic RRR. Chances are, even if you haven’t seen it, you have likely seen people’s reactions to it and even clips being shared from an insane animal unleashing scene. The film caught on like fire with American audiences and has even been nominated for Best Original Song for this year’s Academy Awards. Director S. S. Rajamouli is flying high with the attention, especially when someone like James Cameron loves your work and praises you for it, which is what happened, according to ComingSoon.

A video clip is currently making the rounds that is showcasing the Avatar: The Way of Water director giving a very warm reception to Rajamouli as the two meet at the 2022 Critics Choice Awards. Like many film buffs, Rajamouli cites Terminator as a favorite of his and names that, along with Titanic and Avatar, as inspirations to him. Cameron would then go on to gush about his favorite aspects of RRR.

Rajamouli, in turn, gushes about Cameron’s praise. He can be heard in the video clip exclaiming, “These words from you are more than an award for me. I mean, I can’t believe that you saw the film, and you’re analyzing my film. Oh my god.” Cameron adds how much he loved the score for the film, composed by M.M. Keeravani, calling it amazing and said it even made him want to stand up at certain moments. “I like the music to kind of stay out of the way and kind of come in and support when the audience is already feeling something, so it builds the theme. But you’re using the music very differently. He opens his eyes, boom! And you go with it, it’s like you feel like standing up. There are moments in that film where I just had to get up. I’m talking about watching it at home, I’m standing up!”

ComingSoon caps off the encounter with Cameron “congratulating them on how it must feel to have captured the praise of the entire world and telling Rajamouli that if he ever wanted to make a film in the United States, they could talk.”

Netflix has defended freezing cold conditions on an outdoor U.K. set where its real-life Squid Game unscripted series saw contestants sustain injuries while competing as winter temperatures plunged below zero.

On Wednesday, the streamer and its co-producers pushed back on claims in The Sun tabloid newspaper that players had been severely injured during production on a former air force base near Bedford, in England’s eastern region, during a rare cold snap.

“We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set — and participants were prepared for that — any claims of serious injury are untrue,” Netflix and Studio Lambert, which is co-producing Squid Game: The Challenge along with The Garden, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

The unspecified freezing weather injuries on set took place during filming of the memorable Red Light, Green Light game, which appeared in the first episode of the original Squid Game series. Netflix defended the on-set conditions, with producers insisting no one was stretchered off, as The Sun claimed in its original report.

The reality TV version of Squid Game, the original popular Netflix survival series out of South Korea, has 456 players from around the world competing in a series of games for the chance to win $4.65 million. Netflix casted contestants from around the world who speak English to ensure they can follow gameplay directions issued on set via a loud-speaker, similar to the series.

The original Squid Game series told the story of a divorced father and gambler (Lee Jung-jae) who enters a secret competition where 456 players compete in a series of playground games such as tug of war. The losers of each round are executed until just one victor remains. The series was a global hit and has been renewed for a second season at Netflix.

Squid Game: The Challenge is a co-production between Studio Lambert (The Circle) and The Garden (24 Hours in A&E), part of ITV Studios, and is being filmed in the U.K. Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt and Toni Ireland from Studio Lambert; and John Hay, Nicola Hill and Nicola Brown from The Garden are executive producers.

Episode two packed in quite the punch on Sunday night. It rallied in more than 5.7 million viewers, which was up 22% from the series debut last week. Giving it the title of the largest 2 week audience growth for an original drama series for HBO/HBO Max in its history. Last week set the tone for the series perfectly and the opening sequence this time did not disappoint. Let’s dive right in.

Spoilers below… stop reading if you haven’t seen the episode.

The Point of No Return

We are taken back in time again to Jakarta, Indonesia, September 24, 2003. Where we are at the beginning of the outbreak and meet Ibu Ratna (Christine Hakim), who is a professor of mycology at the University of Indonesia. She is taken from a café by the police officers and this is when the dread sets in knowing these officers took her for a reason. We see her taken into a private facility where she is told to inspect something under a microscope. There she discovers through her years of knowledge and experience that this in fact Ophiocordyceps. A fungus that at that point in time can only infect insects, not humans. She is perplexed and then goes in with protective gear to examine an unknown woman’s body, who has a bullet hole in her head and bite mark on her leg. The bite mark looks unusual to her so she further inspects and sticks some tongs into her throat where she pulls out tendrils looking to curl their way onto anything with a pulse.

She drops the tongs in fear and amazement knowing at this exact moment that this human got infected with this particular fungus. After we see her sit down with the officer who brought her in. He explains to her that this happened at a flour and grain factory outside  the city. Let’s take it back to the first episode where we saw Sarah and her neighbor making cookies. This is how we learn how this became worldwide and everything becomes full circle. The flour from that factory went worldwide infecting everyone.

He gets into detail explaining to her that one woman became violent all of sudden and started attacking people. We know now how easily one virus can travel between people from our very own COVID 19 pandemic. She then asks how many workers are missing in hope that maybe they will be able to contain this. He says 14 and that they brought in a few for observation, but them were put down due to their violent nature.

It is in the perfect pin drop moment that she knows that there is no hope left to save us. She tells the officer with shaking hands that there is no cure or medicine. That they need to bomb the city with everyone in it to stop the spread, killing millions. They are at the point of no return and need to prepare for the worst. In this final moment that perfectly spans into our time we see how she finally accepts the imminent future for us and asked the officer to drive her home to be with her family. The sense of  lost hope and potential collapse of civilization can be felt here and the acting was top tier.

The World We Live In Now

Courtesy of HBO/HBO Max

We are brought now into our present time. We see Ellie (Bella Ramsey) be interrogated by Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Tess (Anna Torv). They want to know how she is infected and not turning. She explains it to them but Joel seems to not believe it. Tess wants to know why she is so important to the Fireflies. She tries to scare Ellie telling her that Joel and her are not good people. Finally Ellie says that there is a Firefly camp out West working with with scientists for a vaccine and what they found in her is the cure that they need to end this. Joel says its all nonsense but Tess seems to believe her. Tess finally makes Joel accept that this can actually be real.

They finally go outside and you can see in the daylight the complete destruction of the city. We also see from the advice of Dr. Ratna that that the governments bombed all the major cities to stop the outbreak from spreading. It clearly did not work and we are left with giant craters where Ellie explains that “it looks like a fucked up moon”. Kudos to the cinematographer Ksenia Sereda, production designer John Paino for giving us this beautiful yet devastating world and putting it all together straight out of the game. We are then met with screams where we learn that this is the injected.

They start to walk through this city to meet up with the remaining Fireflies as promised by Marlene at the Capital Building. They are blocked by every turn due to the toppled over skyscrapers and collapsed buildings. Everything that is overrun with vines and fungus and that we built in ruin. The trio then enters a completely run down grand hotel which is semi-submerged in water. They trek through muddy green waters and Ellie tells them like in the game, that she doesn’t know to swim. She finally realizes she can walk through it. They make it to the tenth floor but are blocked by debris and falling walls. Tess decides to go through to find a way out. While she is gone Ellie tries to bond with Joel but he is reluctant and guarded. Tess finally comes back with a way out for them. They then come to the balcony, looking down at a a big group of injected swarming around. It is then Ellie realizes that they are all connected.

Fear of the Unknown

Courtesy of HBO/HBO Max

Tess then explains to them that they are indeed connected and that the fungus grows underground miles and miles long through a network of fungal threads. You can step on one and they all know where to find you. That horrifying fact paralyzes them from a second. The gravity hits Ellie like a freight truck. All of them then decide to head into the museum as a shortcut to the Capital Building. We see fungus all throughout the vines and grass. Joel says its bone dry so they think they are indeed safe. Tess however warns Ellie to stand guard anyway because she even knows what lies beyond in the dark. They make their way inside the museum and fans of the game already know what to expect. However the jump scare comes pretty quickly when we hear that horrifying clicking sound nearby.

They come across a dead man who has been torn apart and Joel then finally realizes that the clickers did this. He tells everyone to keep quiet and they make there way through the museum. Trying to be as silent as possible but failing when falling debris comes crashing down on them. The anticipation and fear sets in when we hear the dreaded clicking sounds of the nearby clickers. These are no ordinary clickers that we have seen and are blind but have extremely sensitive hearing. Due to the falling debris they become aware that humans are near them. The trio start to fight the incoming injected but Ellie gets bitten. She says  “well, if it had to happen to one of us,” knowing of her immunity.

The Kiss of Death

They get outside and Tess starts to act strange with Joel telling him that for once “take the good news and that we can actually win”. They finally get out and make their way over a wooden bridge to the Capital Building where they are then met with dread. All over we can see dead firefly solders.  The feeling of hopelessness returns because they were supposed to be done and deliver Ellie to them. Joel decides they are done and going back to QZ, but Tess fights with him and tells him that “their luck had to run out sometime”. With that realization Ellie knows that Tess is infected from the last fight. Defeated Tess shows them the bite mark right between her shoulder and neck. Tess pleads with him to take Ellie to Bill and Franks to convince them that this real. To give a humanity a fighting chance. One of the dead soldiers wakes up and Joel shoots him which then activates the fungus on the ground. With that horrifying realization Joel says they only have a minute before then swarm in. Tess starts to throw gas on the floor, tells them that she is going to sacrifice herself and tells Joel to “save what you can save”.

Joel then takes Ellie running off who screams not to leave her.  In one of the most tragic and horrifying last scenes we see Tess try to light the gas, when suddenly injected start to swarm in. One sees her and gets close to her, Horrified she sees the fungus come out of his mouth coming towards her. He then kisses her while when she finally lights the gas creating an explosion and engulfing everyone in flames. Outside we see Joel and Tess watch in horror of what is happening and the outcome of what they need to do.
