Ireland Selects ‘The Quiet Girl’ as Oscars International Feature Entry – The Hollywood Reporter

The 2023 Oscars may be well over seven months away and the events of the ceremony last March may be still making headlines. But that hasn’t stopped Ireland, which is getting into the race early.

As much of the industry slowly emerges from its summer holidays and warily eyes the incoming awards season, the Irish Film & Television Academy has announced that the Irish-language feature The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) has been selected as Ireland’s best International feature film entry for the upcoming 95th Academy Awards.

The feature debut of Colm Bairéad, The Quiet Girl recently made history in Ireland when it became the first Irish language film to win the Irish Academy Award (IFTA) for best film. The film received 7 IFTAs overall including awards for director, actress, cinematography, editing, production design and original score. It also broke box office records in Ireland and the U.K., earning in excess of $700,000 since bowing in March, more than four times the record for the previous Irish-language film.

A coming-of-age drama set in rural Ireland in 1981, The Quiet Girl follows Cáit (Catherine Clinch) as she is sent from her overcrowded, dysfunctional household to live with distant relatives for the summer. She is welcomed with open arms by Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley), but her husband (Andrew Bennett) keeps Cáit at arm’s length. Slowly, however, a warmth grows within this makeshift family and Cáit begins to blossom in their care. But in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.

The film was produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoí as part of the Cine4 funding scheme for Irish-language films, in partnership with Screen Ireland, TG4 and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), and the film is also in receipt of the Irish Government’s Section 481 tax incentive.

“We are honoured beyond words that An Cailín Ciúin / The Quiet Girl has been selected to represent Ireland,” said Bairéad and Chrualaoí. “Our heartfelt thanks to IFTA and its selection committee. We have always believed in the idea that an Irish-language film could stand shoulder to shoulder with the best of world cinema and we feel so proud to be representing our country and our language in this way.”

IFTA’s 2023 Irish selection committee was made up producer and Emmy-nominated actress Roma Downey (Ben-Hur, Touched by an Angel), Oscar-nominated actor John C. Reilly (Chicago, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), producer & Paramount TV executive vp of international strategy David Flynn (Bodkin, Seraphim Falls), Oscar-nominated director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In America) and actress Fionnula Flanagan (The Others, The Guard). The committee was chaired by Academy CEO, Áine Moriarty.

“This is such a unique and  beautiful film that captures your heart from the outset, and leaves you profoundly moved,” said Moriarty. “How proud we are to submit this outstanding Irish language film into the Oscar competition, to compete with the best in the world, as we know this story will resonate with international audiences, beyond the borders of language, and no doubt with American Academy members too.”

The Quiet Girl has some time to wait to see if has resonated with AMPAS members, with the 15-member shortlist for 2023’s best international film not due to be announced until Dec. 21 before the final five nominees in the category are unveiled on Jan. 24.

NewJeans: “Cookie” Track Review | Pitchfork

NewJeans are a Y2K-inspired five-member girl group masterminded by Min Hee-jin, the music exec and creative director behind the branding of some of K-pop’s best acts (f(x), Red Velvet). Under her direction, NewJeans’ launch has been the most elaborate campaign in K-pop this year. Every song on their self-titled EP comes with music videos, with one track boasting four. The label has even made a custom phone app where you can play games and interact with each member of the group.

Such ambition also translates to the music, a plush and stylish collection of ’90s and ’00s-indebted R&B with production from two risk-taking figures in the Korean underground: Jinsu Park of the experimental rap duo XXX, and 250, a producer who embarked on a years-long journey to craft a contemporary version of traditional Korean trot. The EP’s most interesting selection is “Cookie,” a weightless groove about courting a crush. Whimsical synths, faint 808s, and wobbling low end create bubbly momentum, grounded by members’ sly and elongated delivery of the titular “cookie.”

The bridge finds a simple, elegant detour by way of Jersey club. “Cookie” ditches the oft-sampled bed squeak and focuses on the beat; the only other K-pop single to feature such direct homage is XUM’s “DDALALA.” The sudden inclusion of this rapid stuttering extends the song’s cutesy schoolyard demeanor into hopscotching ebullience. “I want to ruin your diet,” they sing, following up with ad-libs to further assert their dominance. The best K-pop songs have always transformed their acculturations into a site for stylistic adventurousness, and “Cookie” does so gracefully. It’s a remarkably strong showing, even based on the high standards Min has set.

Screen Time is your curated weekly guide to excellent documentaries and nonfiction programs that you can watch at home.

Eefje Blankevoort and Els van Driel’s feature documentary Shadow Game shares the reality facing immigrants, who flee from war-torn homes. The documentary follows teenagers leaving European countries, as they “travel through a shadow world of minefields, bears, fast-flowing rivers, smugglers and border guards, desperately trying to win what they call ‘The Game.’” Watch the film on True Story and see the lengths that these teenagers will go to in pursuit of a better life.

A film exploring citizens’ attempts to redefine history as it gets defined by nationalistic projects, is Chan Tze Woon’s Hot Docs Award-winning Blue Island. A combination of documentary footage and fictional reconstruction, Blue Island attempts “to describe the Hong Kong of today and tomorrow.” The documentary shares the political complexities of Hong Kong and the resilience of students mirroring the struggles of prior generations. Cai Thomas’ Queenie follows an elderly Black lesbian’s transition from her decades-long stay at the Brooklyn Marcy Projects, to Stonewall Residencies, the first LGBT affordable housing in New York City. The short doc is part of the If/Then Shorts lineup on The Criterion Channel, which showcases several other “documentary storytellers whose voices have been marginalized within the film industry.” Queenie, along with five other short docs, will be streaming this August.

Chances are you’ve seen the viral tweet of filmmaker Béla Tarr posing with a bootleg DVD of his films in a DVD shop in Peru. Pasaje 18, the shop in question, finds itself at the center of a fascinating documentary, Peru’s DVD Pirates Have Exquisite Taste, produced by Vice’s Motherboard, which illustrates the power struggle to access films in Lima, Peru. The protagonist of the film, a self-proclaimed “promoter of culture,” argues that knowledge is to be shared and spread. People can only buy within their means, and for some, that results in piracy. No matter what side of the piracy debate you’re on, check out the brief documentary on YouTube.

Sidse Torstholm Larsen and Sturla Pilskog’s Winter’s Yearning documents the residents of a small town on the Greenlandic West Coast, as they wait for an American smelting plant that could transform its economy and political sovereignty. Though the people of Maniitsoq, Greenland crave independence, it is a wish that contains several caveats and dangers. Watch the documentary on POV.

Valentin Thurn’s 10 Billion: What’s On Your Plate examines the impact of human consumption on the world. Thurn delves into the consequences of mass consumption, which will only grow with the population. Three people were killed and six others wounded in a knife rampage on Wednesday at a kindergarten in southeast China‘s Jiangxi province, police said.

A ‘gangster wearing a cap and mask’ stormed the private kindergarten in Anfu county at about 10:00 am local time (0200 GMT), police said in a statement published on China’s Twitter-like Weibo.

The 48-year-old suspect is still at large, they added. ‘Public security organs are making every effort to hunt down the suspect,’ the police statement said.

In a video of the scene shared by state-run Beijing Daily, a police officer can be seen carrying a small child in his arms to an ambulance.

Other children can also be seen being carried from the building by other adults – presumably either parents or teachers.

CCTV images of a man, believed to be the suspect, were also released to local media. They showed he was wearing a face mask, baseball cap, a white shirt and cream-coloured trousers and shoes. He was also carrying a black satchel bag.

The ages of the victims have not been announced.

This is a breaking news story. More to follow…

Mass violent crime is rare in China, which strictly prohibits citizens from owning firearms, but there has been a spate of mass stabbings in recent years.

And fatal attacks specifically targeting kindergarten and school students have occurred nationwide, carried out by people reportedly wishing to wreak revenge on society or because of grievances with colleagues.

The attacks have forced authorities to step up security and prompted calls for more research into the root causes of such violent acts.

Around 100 children and adults have been killed and hundreds injured over the past decade in apparently uncoordinated, ‘lone wolf’ attacks in which the motive was unclear and the overwhelmingly male assailants were either killed, ended their lives or were put on trial and executed.

Last April, two children were killed and 16 others wounded when a knife-wielding man entered a kindergarten in southern China.

In 2020, a knife-wielding attacker wounded 37 students and two adults at a primary school in southern China. Local media identified a security guard as the perpetrator.

And later that year a man was sentenced to death for poisoning dozens of children in an act of revenge against a colleague that left one toddler dead.

A court in the central Chinese province of Henan said the accused, Wang Yun, put sodium nitrite into porridge being prepared for her colleague’s students, causing 25 people to fall sick.

In other more recent attacks, four people were wounded in a stabbing at a major Shanghai hospital last month before the knife-wielding assailant was shot and subsequently arrested by the police.

Six people were also killed and 14 wounded after a man stabbed passersby on a pedestrian shopping street in the eastern Chinese city of Anqing in June last year.

Acts of violence against China’s youth resonate especially strongly due to the country’s chronically low birth rate, partly due to decades of population control policies.

DJI Avata drone cleared for take-off as intriguing new Goggles leak

The rumored DJI Avata drone has been inching closer to take-off in recent weeks –and the FPV model’s launch just got a little closer thanks to a leak of its intriguing new Goggles headset.

FPV (first person view) drones are flown via a headset that gives you a bird’s-eye view from the aircraft. And it seems that the DJI Avata‘s headset will be much smaller than previous versions, with a leak from the reliable @Dealsdrone (opens in new tab) Twitter account (below) showing the new Goggles 2 being worn by a pilot.

Although a ‘DJI Goggles V2’ headset already exists, a recent FCC filing revealed that DJI would simply be naming the new Avata-compatible version the ‘DJI Goggles 2’. According to that filing, this headset will be technically identical to the current Goggles V2, with the main difference being its design.

What’s interesting about the new headset is how small it looks compared to previous versions of DJI’s Goggles. Earlier versions have been face-hugging affairs (see below), but the ones in the leaked photo appear to be less bulky and have fewer antennas.

A separate leak (opens in new tab) on Chinese social media also compares the headset to the size of a water bottle. This compact form factor could be good news for flying in warmer environments like indoors, which is expected to be the DJI Avata’s natural habitat. It’s been tipped to be a ‘cinewhoop’ drone, which are designed to be flown in confined spaces near to people.

The current DJI Goggles V2 (above) look larger than the new ones in the leaked photo (Image credit: DJI)

What isn’t clear from the leak is whether or not the DJI Goggles 2 will be compatible with other drones like the DJI FPV, or are a dedicated model for the DJI Avata.

We’ll likely have to wait for the official launch to find out, but that’s seemingly around the corner. Another regular DJI leaker, @OsitaLV (opens in new tab), has also now claimed that the DJI Avata “has been sent to KOLs for evaluation”, with KOL being a marketing term for ‘Key Opinion Leader’.

With the intriguing new drone and its headset now leaked and registered by the FCC, it seems a launch is imminent for what would be a new style of flying camera for the world’s biggest drone maker.

Analysis: FPV drones ready to hit the mainstream?

A man wearing wearing an FPV headset

The DJI FPV Goggles V2 (above) being worn by a pilot during our test of the GoPro Hero 10 Black Bones camera (Image credit: Future)

FPV drones are still relatively niche, but it seems that both DJI and GoPro are keen to fly them closer to the mainstream.

We used the DJI Goggles V2 (above) during our test of the new GoPro Hero 10 Black Bones camera, which is a bare-bones action camera designed to be mounted to FPV drones. As you can see, that headset is fairly bulky, so it makes sense for DJI to make a more compact version for its rumored indoor-friendly DJI Avata ‘cinewhoop’ drone.

This hopefully means that the DJI Goggles 2, as the new headset is expected to be called, will also be a little more affordable than current version. The Goggles V2 cost $568 / £609 / AU$999, although you can also buy them in a bundle with the DJI FPV drone. This kind of cost is a pretty big barrier to widespread FPV adoption.

The leaked photos of the DJI Avata suggest that it’ll be cheaper than the DJI FPV drone, given its build and weight (which is expected to be sub-500g, compared to the 795g DJI FPV). So a similarly stripped-down headset makes sense, particularly if it’s compatible with other FPV drones.

While FPV drones will likely continue to be more niche than mainstream models like the DJI Mini 3 Pro, the DJI Avata is shaping up to be a promising option for beginners and those who can’t afford the DJI FPV. And that could make it a strong contender for a spot in our guide to the best beginner drones.

The Verge’s Guide to working from home

It would be an interesting experiment to go back in time three or four years and inform your earlier self that — guess what? — you’re probably going to be working from home soon, and there’s a good chance that it may be a permanent change.

Since the pandemic lockdowns of early 2020, many people have remained working from home. In the time since then, people have moved out of commuting distance from their offices or have not yet decided it was comfortable to return to a crowded office — or simply decided they liked working from home. And many businesses have changed their policies to accommodate their employees.

But working from home, especially on a regular basis, means accommodating the needs of your workday. In this guide, we look at the various issues that have arisen as people settle into these circumstances. This can include dealing with family (and especially kids), avoiding distractions and Wi-Fi disasters, how the shift to working from home has changed America’s energy usage, how to look your best for that inevitable video conference, and which video conferencing app to use.

In other words, we’ve put together a group of articles to help you make working from home the best experience possible.

How is ‘The Sandman’ Comic Adaption Different From Other Superheroes ?

Netflix is going to soon stream the series adaptation of a comic book written by Neil Gaiman. Originally published by DC Comics, The Sandman follows the story of Dream who comes from the other side of the existing universe. But this show will not be like any other superhero show or movie from the DC catalogue. There are some elements that make this show unique and a little different from other superhero shows.

The Sandman: A uniquely original superhero

This Sandman is not the Sandman who has clashes with Spider-Man. ‘The Sandman’ of Neil Gaiman’s world is a mythical being named Dream. The character has superpowers of bringing pleasant dreams to children; each has had some thematic connections to dreaming. The author has tried to tie them into a common community within the DC Universe. However, this superman is not like the characters of the DC Universe.

ALSO READ: ‘The Sandman’ Netflix Original Caught the Attention at San Diego Comic-Con Along With the Fans’ Hearts

The superheroes from the DC Universe use their powers and fight with the comic book villains. But The Sandman superhero pushes that boundary and has the modern touch of mythology. Mythology isn’t really a genre in the modern media and therefore, The Sandman is difficult to put into any category. There are many works and re-works done upon the existing mythology. However, the Neil Gaiman character becomes one of the very few about the entirely new fundamentals of another universe. Therefore, one cannot put these comics under one genre.

The superhero movies find their roots connecting at one point. No matter how Iron Man fundamentally differs from Thor or Spider-Man or any other superhero movie, the emotional scenes, long conversations about friendships and the overall cinematic movements find common ground. But The Sandman resolves these issues a little differently with its original mythological solutions.

The dark-themed Netflix original will stream on the streaming giant on August 5, 2022. Are you excited about the show? What do you expect from them? Fahadh Faasil is Simply Brilliant Despite a Stretched Out Story

Malik
Director: Mahesh Narayanan
Cast: Fahadh Faasil, Nimisha Sajayan, Joju George, Vinay Forrt

A lead actor can make or mar a movie however superb a script may be, and Fahadh Faasil is simply brilliant as a poor Muslim fisherman, Sulaiman Ali in Malik who wages a lifelong battle to preserve peace between his coastal hamlet and a neighbouring one with a Christian majority. Certainly, he is no mahatma, given his proclivity to smuggling that gets him his riches, but also suffering and pain in the bargain.

Although the film is a biographical sketch of a man who even weds a Christian girl, Rosilin (Nimisha Sajayan) and never attempts to convert her, the core plot deals with the corruption and vindictiveness of the police force that provokes the two communities — hitherto in peaceful coexistence — to kill each other. And those who oppose the vile of the men in khaki are bumped off.

Police brutality in Kerala is particularly bad, and one reason why the Mohanlal-starrer, Drishyam, went on to rake in huge profits was the way it showed police highhandedness. But in Malik, the nexus between politicians and policemen is underlined with far greater subtlety that is demonstrative without being dramatic. The story, strung together in a non-linear form, ultimately tells us how the police, with political backing, can ruin the social fabric of a society, even pitting brother against brother.

Director Mahesh Narayanan, who is also the writer (and editor!), weaves into this labyrinth interesting anecdotes, though at 160 minutes, the movie seems far too stretched (and confusing) with an awfully uninspiring opening shot. The story could have been far more tightly knit, and a lot of verbosity could have been edited out to give a sharper focus to the premise.

In a very strong way, Malik reminded me of Mani Ratnam’s Nayagan, where too Kamal Haasan’s character rises from the lowly ranks to become a leader of his community. Yes, there is far greater violence in Ratnam’s work; Narayanan keeps this aspect well under control, with a minimalistic take on police firing and battles between the groups.

Ali himself is a genteel soul, and Faasil throws up a subtle and sedate performance that conveys the steely determination of the man. His love for his people is exemplified with some of the simplest examples, as when the head of his mosque says that people have stopped coming there because the surroundings have been turned into a huge garbage dumping yard, Ali gets to work and ropes in a local politician and gets the “palli”(mosque) up and shining.

Malik begins far too slowly, but picks up pace as it moves between time frames, and the personal as well as the political, even though I would have preferred more on Ali’s relationships with his wife and kids. These have been glossed over, leaving an undeniable void in the way his character has been shaped.

LEGOLAND – SUMMER 2022

BUILD YOUR SUMMER HAPPINESS…ONE BRICK AT A TIME

By Emmanuel Itier and Roxanna Bina

If there is one necessary stop for the summer in order to build yourself a little more happiness, it is the land of the bricks as known as Legoland California . Make sure you block one, or ideally two days, with a complete park hopping ticket in order to partake the many rides and activities at the theme park, the water park and the not so well know aquarium. To make it even more splendid, indulge yourself with a night or two at one of the two majestic hotels: the Legoland hotel and the Legoland Castle hotel.

This has been a tradition for us, with three boys (Felix ,17 who literally grew up at Legoland – Max, 10 and Rex, 8), to come to this “awesome” park for the last 15 years, twice a year, for a summer escapade and a Christmas brick celebration. I don’t think we missed any one of the launches of the new attractions, such as the Ninjago theme area or the Lego movie land, which has opened for almost a year now.

What is fantastic is the lines are not out of control. At most, it will take you an hour max to get to the rocking “Emmet’s flying adventure ride” in the Lego movie world, on your left when you enter the park and after passing through the adventure land where I suggest you take a “Coastersaurus” roller coaster ride to put you in the mood and open wide all your senses. The Lego movie world is full of surprises. Not only you will want to do, over and over, “Emmet’s ride” to better catch all of the master builders in this high tech transport: a triple decker flying couch. But you will delight into a smoother experience with “Queen Watevra’s carousel” gracing of your presence one of the 60 multi color horses. Make sure to have a full bowl of delicious ramen at the “Everything is Ramen” restaurant, make sure to buckle up and dare the ultimate sensation at the “Unikitty’s disco drop”!

Not too far from the Lego movie world and to chill out with the high afternoon sun, I recommend a deep-sea adventure with the recently launched: “Lego city: Deep-sea adventure”. You will board with your whole family into a “real” submarine and submerge underwater, ready for some treasure hunt. Not only will you cross path with a dozen of rare fishes, sting rays and sharks, but you will be able to play with your family with this fun scavenger hunt.&nbsp;</p>

Now that you got a taste for “water”, why not take a full immersion in the water park, adjacent to the Legoland park. This summer it is your ultimate afternoon escapade until sunset. The kids will have so much fun interacting with the water slides of “Cragger’s swamp” from the Chima world or take a deep dive with the the “pirate reef” attraction. Finally, a major success with all ages is the “Lion temple water pool” with, also a Chima theme. Go and jump in the rolling waves, endlessly and until the waterpark closes around 6pm.<p>As a closing experience for a full day of pure fun and adventures, let me suggest a stroll by the “Lost Kingdom adventure” ride where the whole family would be able to compete at who is a better shooter of mummies, snakes and skeletons while on board of a range-rover like automobile. Finally end the day with a kung fu kick in the land of Ninjago and show off your moves with fireballs, lightning, shockwaves and ice kick while experiencing the “Lego Ninjago: the ride”. This is your ultimate family challenge. And before saying “see you next time, Legoland” why don’t you take a walk through the “Sea Life aquarium” and encounter some majestic sea creature such as sharks, octopi and rays!

Feel how complete and awesome you are! You have experienced what the Lego company has to offer best with their toys (which you should by at the Big Lego store on the way out of the park) and their many movies and series franchises! And more important: see the gigantic smiles gracing the faces of your children, now ready for bed at the Legoland hotel or on the long ride home. They say you can’t buy happiness, but you can certainly build it, one brick at a time, one visit at a time to Legoland California. Keep on being happy and have a splendid summer!

Season 4, Episode 5, “Private School”

Kayvan Novak in What We Do In The Shadows

I wasn’t prepared. I simply wasn’t prepared!

See, I spent the first seven minutes of “Private School,” tonight’s installment of What We Do In The Shadows, just sort of smiling along, enjoying the general vampiric silliness—but not necessarily laughing. Baby Colin Robinson is running wild, destroying the house? Neat! Laszlo’s still locked in Proud Dad Mode? It’s a great look for Matt Berry. Nandor’s addicted to magical cosmetic surgery? Sure, that’s a workable C-plot. Really, I was just vibing a bit, already doing a bit of writing in my head, as I prepared to explain how this was a pleasantly B-worthy episode of a show that’s always fun, even when it’s not swinging for the fences.

What I wasn’t prepared for, then, was the scene that kicked off after the first commercial break tonight, the one that makes up the bulk of the episode’s runtime: an increasingly ludicrous school admissions interview with a straight-laced headmaster, which might be the single funniest and most chaotic sequence that this show has ever produced.

I should have guessed that something good was coming, maybe, when Anthony Atamaniuk’s Sean came barging into the house. The whole joke of Sean’s character is the way he forces Nadja, Laszlo, and Nandor into putting on their god-awful impressions of humanity, which are always a delight. But even that didn’t truly prepare me for the moment when Guillermo, already stressed out from reminding the gang that they need to act like “a regular human being who likes doing regular human things,” walks into the parlor and sees the trio in their “human” clothes—an image that has tragically not been added to FX’s press pictures site as we go to press. He, and we, can only marvel in horror at Laszlo’s Ed Hardy shirt and bucket hat and Nandor’s “ask me about my swing dance club” cosplay ensemble. (Nadja looks fashionable, if out-of-date, as ever, of course.)

If the joke of the subsequent sequence was just “the vampires are bad at being human,” then that would already be pretty solid. That’s almost the entire basis for Jackie Daytona as a character, after all. (To wit: This is a cast that’s extraordinarily good at playing big and broad and they’re never at their biggest or broadest than when loudly informing people how much they like pizza and going outside in the sunlight.) The genius kicks in, though, when the headmaster (Peter Francis James, warm and charming in a straight-man role) immediately trips the crew up by asking who Baby Colin’s parents are. A panicking Nadja busts out her hypnosis to blank the human’s memory and reset the conversation, allowing them a quick re-shuffle, and a do-over. And when they screw that one up, she does it again. And again. And again.

Ponto is all about mindful—in a thoughtful sense, and in the way they use recycled and bio-based materials.

And that, in the parlance of the improv nerds, is how we establish the game here: an increasingly silly set of conversational resets as the vamps try to settle on a family structure that will be most impressive for the increasingly befuddled headmaster (while also constantly forgetting that Sean, in the room because he set up the meeting, actually knows the the truth). And it just escalates! There are multiple points in this 12-minute sequence where the scene could have ended in some minor triumph—Guillermo stepping forward to show that he’s Colin’s actual parent, for instance. But instead of allowing the intensifying absurdity to be cut off, it just keeps barreling ever upwards, until we have Nandor and Laszlo enthusiastically discussing their love of reaming each other, or trying to placate the headmaster’s “star-fucking” tendencies by bringing in Sal Vulcano from “Incomprehensible Jest-hairs” to impress him. (That is, only for Las to immediately lose patience and snap the TruTV star’s neck. What We Do In The Shadows: Serving up the best celebrity cameos on TV for four seasons now and counting.)

Along the way, we get a veritable depot of ’shipper fuel, as all involved continue cycling through pairings to find the most convincing setup. For one brief moment, it feels like we might have reached the button for the scene—Guillermo points out that they could have just hypnotized the headmaster into accepting Colin into the school in the first place—only to have the vamps blow past him (Nadja: “Did this bitch just say what I think he said?!”) and dive even deeper into the wildness. The final montage—Nadja married to Sean, Nadja’s talking doll claiming to be a single mother, Laszlo trying to convince the headmaster that they’re Colin’s fathers, and an attempted pairing between Vulcano’s corpse and a wild skunk—makes absolutely zero sense, in practical terms. But who the fuck cares? It’s some of the most energetic comedy this show has ever generated and it had me clapping my hands with every bizarre twist.

Ultimately, we get to a punchline—the headmaster, who was never that interested in the family situation stuff in the first place, calmly requesting Colin’s transcripts, which of course the vampires do not have—that then gets, in typical WWDITS style, one-upped: The whole endeavor is rendered moot because they gave the poor man a massive stroke with all the repeated brainwashings. (Laszlo: “Most human beings can only take 7 hypnoses per hour. That man went through 428.”)

The actual plot upshot is to reveal (through a little educational bribery) that both Guillermo and Nadja are embezzling from the nightclub, which is the sort of thing that would matter a lot more in a show where continuity existed as anything but a way to set up the next gag. (Although the different ways the duo respond to getting caught—Guillermo nervously offering the camera crew a bribe, and Nadja cheerfully threatening to kill them and everyone they’ve ever loved if they rat on her—do serve as well-observed character notes.)

We end with a quick wrap-up: The vamps are now forcing Baby Colin Robinson to play constant sports to burn off his energy; Nandor spends a wish to de-scrunch his face; we conclude, as all wholesome family sitcoms do, with an annoyed Nandor yelling at Laszlo, “No reaming for you tonight!” Truly, the status quo has been restored. But what a way to get there!

Stray observations

  • “The child that crawled out of the abdomen of our dead friend Colin Robinson”—the commitment to finding new ways to explain Baby Colin remains very high.
  • “Gizmo, shut the fuck up! We’re doing a piece to cam-er-ah!” Matt Berry, folks.
  • Good “acknowledging the camera” gags all over the place tonight, actually.
  • Nandor’s djinn-based cosmetic changes are nicely escalated throughout the episode.
  • There’s a genuinely sweet moment when Laszlo comforts Baby Colin Robinson after the 143-year-old kid vampires at the club rebuff his attempts to be friends.
  • Nadja runs her human impression by Guillermo: “Oh, I love pizza so much!”
    “…That’s pretty good.”
  • Natasia Demetriou scream-singing “Nine!” after Guillermo fills her in on Colin’s age just slayed me.
  • “We are like two French trombones.”
“This guy? I ream him nightly.”
“And I am always sucking him off. They are like ‘Come it’s dinner! Stop sucking off your gay husband!’”
“Which is amusing, because I am dinner. And I just carry on reaming him. Sexually.” Emmys for Kayvan Novak and Matt Berry, please.
  • “Burr burr I couldn’t possibly say anything but Lionel fucking Barrymore’s kids might just go here burr burr.” This, this is why I’ve been sad to see Nadja stuck in the most boring plot-lines these last few weeks.
  • “What the actual fuck is that? Is that a talking doll?!” Atamaniuk has some fantastic reactions throughout the entire bit.
  • The only pairing Laszlo won’t accept: him and Gizmo.

What’s on TV This Week: CMA Fest and ‘Becoming Elizabeth’

With network, cable and streaming, the modern television landscape is a vast one. Here are some of the shows, specials and movies coming to TV this week, Aug. 1-7. Details and times are subject to change.

Monday

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (2016) 7 p.m. on TNT. Usually the Avengers work together to fight against alien armies or a supervillain warlord trying to decimate the planet. But in this movie, Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) make it personal and battle over political beliefs: Captain America thinks that superheroes should operate without interference, but Iron Man wants the government to be involved. A.O. Scott called it a “very crowded, reasonably enjoyable installment in the Avengers cycle” in his review for The New York Times. “The best part of the movie,” Scott wrote, “is a six-on-six rumble at an airport, in which two teams of costumed co-workers, with a few ringers in the mix, face off to work out their issues.” The battle, he said, “is entertaining precisely because the stakes are relatively low.”

TOM SWIFT 9 p.m. on CW. This mystery show, named after the long-running series of young adult books that inspired it, ends this week after just one season. It has followed the title character, played by Tian Richards, as he sifts through conspiracy theories and mysterious phenomena to solve the disappearance of his father with the help of his best friend (Ashleigh Murray), his bodyguard (Marquise Vilson) and his A.I. companion (LeVar Burton).

EDGE OF THE EARTH 9 p.m. on HBO. Skiers, kayakers, climbers and surfers show off their skills and put themselves to the test by completing near-impossible challenges around the world in this four-part documentary mini-series. The first three episodes featured skiing in Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park; kayaking in the Chalupas River in Ecuador; and climbing around Pik Slesova in Kyrgyzstan. The final installment, airing Tuesday, brings the surfers Ian Walsh and Grant Baker (known as Twiggy) to Africa’s western coast.

Wednesday

CMA FEST 8 p.m. on ABC. This music festival that took place at Nissan Stadium in Nashville in early June comes to small screens, with footage of select performances airing on Wednesday. Elle King and Dierks Bentley, who previously worked together on the songs “Worth a Shot” and “Different for Girls,” host the three-hour broadcast. It will feature performances from Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett and others, as well as collaborations between Bentley and Billy Ray Cyrus; Wynonna Judd and Carly Pearce; Zac Brown Band with Darius Rucker; and more.

Thursday

IMPRACTICAL JOKERS 10 p.m. on TruTV. The ninth season of this long-running prank show has not been without speed bumps: Production had to adhere to Covid-19 protocols, which required the show to rethink its entire format — instead of going up to strangers in public places, they rent out locations and film over longer periods of time. Since Joe Gatto, one of the series’s founders, abruptly stopped appearing on the show earlier this year, it has brought in celebrity guests including Jillian Bell, Adam Pally and Colin Jost. Brooke Shields will join for this week’s season finale.

Friday

AN ORSON WELLES MARATHON from 2 p.m. on TCM. See the varied talents of Orson Welles — as a director, actor and screenwriter — in this lineup of classics. The marathon starts off at 2 p.m. with THE STRANGER (1946), followed by MR. ARKADIN (1955) at 4 — both of which Welles directed, starred in and wrote. Then, OTHELLO (1952) — which Welles acted in and directed — airs at 6, followed by THE THIRD MAN (1949), directed by Carol Reed, which Welles acted in and was a writer of. THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (1948) follows at 10, with CITIZEN KANE (1941) at 11:45.

THE INN AT LITTLE WASHINGTON: A DELICIOUS DOCUMENTARY (2020) 10 p.m. on PBS (check local listings). A fight for three Michelin stars, an old garage converted into an inn and a seasoned chef: This documentary follows the cook Patrick O’Connell as he plans the 40th anniversary celebration for the Inn at Little Washington, a quaint hotel and restaurant that he founded in 1978. The documentary shows the execution of many of O’Connell’s culinary creations and discusses the tumultuous history of the inn.

Saturday

ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953) 8 p.m. on TCM. Audrey Hepburn was only 24 when this romantic comedy was released, and it turned out to be her breakout movie. The story follows a European princess, Ann (Hepburn), who takes a night off from her overwhelming life. Instead of having an enjoyable night out, things go awry and she is rescued by Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), an American reporter. A love story begins, despite Bradley’s intentions to take advantage of the princess’s fame.

Sunday

BECOMING ELIZABETH 8 p.m. on Starz. In 1547, Queen Elizabeth I — then known as Elizabeth Tudor — watched her 9-year-old half brother become king after the death of her long-absent father, the infamous King Henry VIII. These are the true circumstances that set off the fictionalized telling of Elizabeth’s teenage years in this series. The show, which ends its first season on Sunday, centers on Elizabeth (Alicia von Rittberg) and her siblings, Mary (Romola Garai) and Edward (Oliver Zetterström), as their personal lives are scrutinized by the royal court and the public.

BET SPECIAL: 37TH ANNUAL STELLAR GOSPEL MUSIC AWARDS 8 p.m. on BET. The gospel artists Jekalyn Carr and Kierra Sheard host this awards show, which was recorded live in Atlanta in mid-July. The ceremony features performances by Kirk Franklin, Erica Campbell, Maverick City Music, Marvin Sapp and others.

Ireland Selects ‘The Quiet Girl’ As 2023 Best International Film Oscar Entry – Deadline

The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) has selected Colm Bairéad’s debut feature The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) as its entry for the best international film category for the 2023 Oscars, in the first announced submission of the upcoming awards season.

The Irish-language work swept the IFTA Awards last March to become the first debut feature to win best film, as well as clinch best director, actress, cinematography, editing, production design, and original score.

Set in rural Ireland in 1981, the coming-of-age drama stars Catherine Clinch as a quiet, neglected girl who is sent from her overcrowded, dysfunctional household to live with distant relatives for the summer. She begins to blossom in their care but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.

The feature garnered rave reviews in Ireland and the UK and broke box office records for an Irish-language film when it was released in both territories last May, more than quadrupling the previous record for a local language film with a gross in excess of $800k.

This year’s Irish Oscar selection committee included producer and Emmy-nominated actress Roma Downey (Ben-Hur, Touched by an Angel), Oscar-nominated actor John C. Reilly (Chicago, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), producer & Paramount TV EVP of International Strategy David Flynn (Bodkin, Seraphim Falls), Oscar-nominated director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In America), director Aisling Walsh (Maudie, Song For A Raggy Boy) and actress Fionnula Flanagan (The Others, The Guard).

The committee was chaired by IFTA CEO Áine Moriarty.

The Quiet Girl was produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoí as part of the Cine4 funding scheme for Irish-language film, in partnership with Screen Ireland, TG4, and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), and the film is also in receipt of the Irish Government’s Section 481 tax incentive.

The legendary basketball player LeBron James, 37, shared a family video of him and his sons shooting hoops on Instagram together on August 2, 2022, and those boys are catching up to their dad quickly! LeBron captioned the post with, “Simply no better feeling than doing what I love to do with who I love! Great work today Young #JamesGang #EarnedNotGiven.” In the video, Lebron was seen with his two sons Bronny, 17, and Bryce, 15, on a basketball court in El Segundo, according to TMZ.

More AboutLeBron James

LeBron showed off his impressive athletic frame by going completely shirtless during the sweaty hoop session. His two boys are sure to be following in their father’s footsteps and they are clearly getting the best coaching out there. LeBron is approaching his 20th year in the league with his two sons working toward finishing high school, the outlet reported.

Many of LeBron’s followers were shocked and impressed at how well both Bronny and Bryce played on the court with their dad. One Instagram user even wrote, “Bryce looking like KD 2.0.” While another wrote, “Whole squad got HOPS.”

The famous rapper Diddy, 52, also took to the comment section to simply write a flexed bicep emoji to show his support for the James family. In the video, LeBron’s two boys were effortlessly dunking alongside their impressive father. One of the pictures in the post also showed the three of them standing side-by-side with their hands on their waist in an ultimate father and son goals pose.

LeBron is not only a dad to Bronny and Bryce, but also to his seven-year-old daughter Zhuri James. The Los Angeles Lakers player has had all of his children with his wife Savannah Brinson, 35, who LeBron married back in 2013. Savannah and LeBron are also high school sweethearts, which we must say is simply adorable!

‘Nobody Ever Told the Story of Baseball Better’

Following the death of Vin Scully, the icon who announced LA Dodgers games with poignancy and wit for decades, his fans — including sports figures and Hollywood luminaries — paid tribute to the man known as the voice of the team and his city.

Scully died on Tuesday at age 94 from natural causes, 6 years after he formally retired from his longtime role. And even nearly a decade later, for his admirers no time had passed at all, nor was his loss felt any less deeply.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti called Scully “our dear friend, the Voice of LA,” and said “he united us, inspired us, and showed us all what it means to serve.”

“No one was better at any job than Vin Scully was at his,” Jimmy Kimmel said, calling Scully “a lovely man on top of that.”

“There will never be another Vin Scully. Our most heartfelt condolences to the Scully family, the Dodgers organization, and baseball fans everywhere,” the Minnesota Twins organization said on its official Twitter page.

“You are more a part of Los Angeles History than sunshine and palm trees. Your voice will forever echo throughout the city,” actor Oshea Jackson said.

“Our hearts are with the friends, family and fans of Vin Scully. A true legend. He will be missed,” the Chicago White Sox organization said.

Beyonce has apparently removed a sample of the 2003 Kelis song Milkshake from her song Energy, following criticism from Kelis over the sample.

The song Energy – from the latest album Renaissance from Beyonce, 40 – had revised versions on Tidal and Apple as of Tuesday, according to Rolling Stone. At one point, a glitch occurred on Tidal, with just the isolated vocals featured and almost two minutes of silence.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the version of Energy featuring the Kelis sample remained the same on the Spotify version as of Tuesday.

Upset: R&B singer Kelis last week accused Beyonce of 'theft' for allegedly using a sample of a track off her 2003 album Tasty on her new album without permission. She was seen in 2019 in LA

The 2003 hit from Kelis was penned by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (formerly known as The Neptunes), who both were credited on the Beyonce track, though Kelis wasn’t. Beyonce’s website indicated that the samples used on the track were interpolated, altering the existing sound for a new song.

Kelis last week accused Beyonce of ‘theft’ for allegedly using a sample of a track off her 2003 album Tasty on her new album without permission.

The performer, 42, didn’t hold back after discovering that the superstar, 40, used a short section from her song, Milkshake, on her forthcoming track, Energy, alongside the rest of the world.

After a fan account for the two-time Grammy nominee posted about the news, Kelis commented that she was shocked by the song credit and angered not to have any advance notice.

‘My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance all 3 parties involved is astounding,’ she said. ‘I heard about this the same way everyone else did. Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.’

In response to one comment that Beyonce clearly admires her work, Kelis replied: ‘Admire is not the word.’

When another expressed excitement about them working together, the mom-of-two, who was writing under her celebrity chef account @bountyandfull, claimed: ‘It’s not a collab it’s theft.’

Kelis later took to Instagram calling the track Milkshake ‘one of the most licensed records of our generation.’

She added: ‘I am a creator , I’m an innovator, I have done more then left my mark on an era of music and style that will go down in history. But there are [bullies] and secrets and gangsters in this industry that smile and get away with it until someone says enough is enough. So I’m saying it today. I’m coming for what’s mine and I want reparations. Peace.’

Previously Kelis fans called out Beyonce for ‘ripping off’ Ring the Alarm from Caught out There.

Beyonce’s upcoming record will be the seventh she has produced over her much-celebrated career.

She also penned a lengthy statement that was shared on her Instagram account, in which she noted that the recording process was thoroughly enjoyable.

‘Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving,’ she stated.

Beyonce added: ‘My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration.’

She concluded by writing: ‘I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.’

Renaissance’s first single, Break My Soul, was previously released to the public on June 20.

The hitmaker worked with several artists, including Big Freedia and her husband, Jay-Z, to produce the track.

The song has since received widespread critical acclaim from many music critics.

Beyonce initially teased that she was working on new music during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar last August.

During the sit-down with the media outlet, the Drunk In Love singer expressed that her recording process had been particularly arduous.

‘I’ve been in the studio for a year and a half. Sometimes it takes a year for me to personally search through thousands of sounds to find just the right kick or snare,’ she said.

Beyonce then confirmed that she still loved making music and that she was happy to be working on new material.

She expressed: ‘After 31 years, it feels just as exciting as it did when I was nine years old. Yes, the music is coming!’

The highly anticipated record, which was scheduled to be released at midnight on Thursday, can be found online and CDs are already being sold in Europe, according to Variety.

The album was leaked on Wednesday.

Masoom Minawala Opens Up on Normalising Women Working Through Pregnancy

On July 25, global Influencer and fashion entrepreneur Masoom Minawala took to social media to announce that she is six weeks pregnant. The video also featured her husband, Antwerp-based diamond merchant Shailin Mehta, as the duo twinned in white, and gave a sneak peek into how their near and dear ones reacted on hearing about her pregnancy.

In an exclusive chat with News18, Minawala, for the first time, opens up on being pregnant and recalls the moment when she came to know that she is going to be a mother. “My first reaction was absolute joy. I couldn’t wait to share the news with my husband and family,” she says excitedly.

A while back, actor Neha Dhupia sparked off conversations about the need to normalise women working during their pregnancy when she revealed that she was eight months pregnant while shooting for A Thursday. And in June this year, actor Alia Bhatt slammed an article which stated that she planned her pregnancy in a way that it doesn’t affect her professional commitments.

Sharing her views on how pregnant women working often draw comments, some not in very good taste, Minawala, who continues to work and travel, opines, “There is definitely a long way to go but I wouldn’t take away from the progress we’ve made. There are so many working moms challenging the stigmas around it, across different industries. The only way to normalise this as a society is to encourage, understand and respect the decision of women who want to work during pregnancy or after giving birth.”

Quiz her if she thinks public figures can help in setting a precedent by defying the stereotype, and Minawala says, “Of course! By challenging these stigmas around working women, we’re actually setting an excellent example for society and the people who look up to us.” She adds, “I’ve been trying to balance and prioritised my time between my personal and professional life for over a decade now and I’m continuing to do that as I step into this exciting new phase of life.”

Talking about how grateful she feels about having her mother around her to help her embrace her impending motherhood, Minawala shares, “Ideally, I’d like to be a blend of both, a hands-on and a cool mum, but only time will tell! Plus, I’ve my mother, who has always been my go-to person for any advice.”

San Diego Comic-Con 2022: a guide to the schedule and best film and TV panels

After two years of being canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego Comic-Con’s coming back this year with a vengeance and a sizable stack of announcements, trailer drops, and early screenings of some of the entertainment industry’s most hyped projects.

While there’s almost no way to see absolutely everything that’s going down during this year’s SDCC, knowing where and when some of the convention’s biggest panels are taking place is a solid way to get the most out of your time if you’re on the con floor (or just following along from home). Here are all of the biggest film and television panels happening at SDCC 2022 that news-hungry fans are going to want to keep an eye on.

Thursday, July 21st

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (12PM PT to 1PM PT, Hall H)

The cast and filmmakers of Paramount’s upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will descend upon Hall H on Thursday afternoon to give panel attendees their first look at the live-action fantasy adventure epic based on the iconic role-playing game. In addition to revealing more about Honor Among Thieves ahead of its March 3rd, 2023, release, Paramount Pictures and production partner eOne are also hosting a Dungeons & Dragons-themed tavern experience that, as of now, may only be accessible by waiting in the standby line.

Ghosts (1PM PT to 2PM PT, Ballroom 20)

Teen Wolf: The Movie (1:30PM PT to 2:30PM PT, Hall H)

Teen Wolf series creator Jeff Davis as well as co-stars Tyler Posey and Tyler Hoechlin have even more to reveal about Paramount Plus’ upcoming Teen Wolf feature that’ll transport audiences back to the town of Beacon Hills.

Abbott Elementary (1:30PM PT to 2:30PM PT, Indigo Ballroom)

Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson, stars Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Lisa Ann Walter, William Stanford Davis, and Sheryl Lee Ralph, and series executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker will come together for a virtual panel discussion about the show’s first season. With any luck, the creative team will also share details about Abbott Elementary’s recently announced second season.

National Treasure: Edge of History (2:15PM PT to 3:15PM PT, Ballroom 20)

While Nic Cage’s Benjamin Franklin Gates might not be a part of Disney Plus’ National Treasure: Edge of History, Justin Bartha’s Riley Poole is set to return to the new series as part of a story about a new generation of explorers whose lives are changed by their love of history. Cast members Lisette Olivera, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Zuri Reed, Lyndon Smith, and executive producers Cormac and Marianne Wibberley will gather to talk about the new show.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (2:15PM PT to 3:15PM PT, Room 6BCF)

Given the big twist that capped off Ms. Marvel’s finale, it’s likely that Disney Plus’ upcoming Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur animated series will feature a few novel changes to its heroine Lunella Lafayette, a character whose origin story is similar to Kamala Khan’s in the comics. That’s just one of the topics that might come up as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur stars Diamond White, Fred Tatasciore, and more members of the show’s creative team come together to discuss its first season.

Severance (3:30PM PT to 4:30PM PT, Ballroom 20)

Severance creator Dan Erickson and cast members Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Dichen Lachman, and Jen Tullock will discuss the recently renewed series’ first season.

The Wheel of Time: Origins (4:15PM PT to 5:15PM PT, Room 6A)

Friday, July 22nd

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (10:30AM PT to 12:00PM PT, Hall H)

The massive cast of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will join showrunners J.D. Payne, Patrick McKay, and executive producer Lindsey Weber to dig into the legends of Middle-earth’s Second Age.

Marvel (11:45AM PT to 1:15PM PT, Hall H)

What If…? was just the beginning of Marvel Studios’ big push into animation, and the series’ second season, along with new shows like X-Men ‘97 and Marvel Zombies, are what department head Brad Winderbaum and head of visual development Ryan Meinerding will be digging into here. Considering how long the panel is and that this is the studio’s first time back presenting at SDCC in years, there’s a chance even more new animated projects might be announced ahead of the weekend’s live-action news.

The Walking Dead (1:30PM PT to 2:30PM PT, Hall H)

Paper Girls (1:30PM PT to 2:30PM PT, Ballroom 20)

Paper Girls co-creators Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang and the cast of Amazon’s upcoming adaptation of the time-traveling sci-fi graphic novel are sitting down to discuss what it was like bringing the beloved story to life. For those interested in seeing some of the series ahead of its July 29th premiere, a 7:00PM PT screening is also being held at the Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero, Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Bob’s Burgers (3:00PM PT to 3:45PM PT, Indigo Ballroom)

BRZRKR (3:00PM PT to 4:00PM PT, Hall H)

BRZRKR co-creators Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt along with screenwriter Mattson Tomlin and Boom Studios editor-in-chief Matt Gagnon will come together to talk about the breakout comic’s future as well as share details about its upcoming film adaptation.

Little Demon (4:00PM PT to 4:45PM PT, Ballroom 20)

Thirteen years after a woman named Laura (Aubrey Plaza) gives birth to the daughter (Lucy DeVito) of Satan (Danny DeVito), the three of them find themselves living in Delaware trying to make a go at living like a regular nuclear family. Series creators Darcy Fowler, Seth Kirschner, and Kieran Valla join executive producer Dan Harmon for an early screening of Little Demon’s first episode, followed by a Q&A.

Archer (5:00PM PT to 6:00PM PT, Indigo Ballroom)

Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose (5:15PM PT to 6:15PM PT, Ballroom 20)

Saturday, July 23rd

Warner Bros. theatrical showcase (10:15AM PT to 11:15PM PT, Hall H)

Dwayne Johnson, Zachary Levi, and a number of surprise guests are headlining the production studio’s big showcase of its upcoming theatrical projects, like Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Though the Warner Bros. planned panels for both Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, and The Flash, starring Ezra Miller, have been canceled, there’s a chance footage from those films might be shown here as well.

Tuca & Bertie season 3 (11:15AM PT to 12:15PM PT, Indigo Ballroom)

The Simpsons (11:20PM PT to 12:15PM PT, Ballroom 20)

House of the Dragon (11:30AM PT to 12:30PM PT, Hall H)

George R.R. Martin and basically the entire cast and creative team behind HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon will take over Hall H to discuss the upcoming series and its story of the legendary Targaryen family at the height of their power.

American Dad! and Family Guy (12:30PM PT to 1:45PM PT, Ballroom 20)

Star Trek Universe (12:45PM PT to 2:15PM PT, Hall H)

The stars and executive producers of Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are coming together to talk about the most recent seasons of their series and what’s next for them all in the beloved sci-fi franchise.

The Sandman (2:30PM PT to 3:30PM PT, Hall H)

The stars and producers of Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman sit down to share details and answer questions about the new show.

The Orville: New Horizons (3:00PM PT to 3:45PM PT, Ballroom 20)

Marvel Studios theatrical showcase (5:00PM PT to 6:00PM PT, Hall H)

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige will return to Hall H for the first time since 2019 to share details about multiple upcoming projects — many of which have already been announced. While it’s expected that projects slated for release in the near future like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and The Marvels will be discussed in some detail, it’s very likely that Feige will also have news to share about unannounced projects that will shape Marvel Studios’ Phase 5 and beyond.

New Yorker Acquires Israeli Documentary Shorts Holy Holocaust, Herd

The New Yorker has acquired Israeli documentary shorts “Holy Holocaust” and “Herd.”

Jerusalem-based sales agent Go2Films has secured a worldwide digital distribution deal with the publication for the pair of award-winning films. “Holy Holocaust” is directed by Osi Wald and Noa Berman-Hertzberg, while “Herd” is helmed by Omer Daida.

Both films are currently nominated for Israeli Academy Awards and have played at international festivals. “Herd” debuted on The New Yorker’s digital channels on Wednesday, while “Holy Holocaust” will be released on The New Yorker later this year.

“Holy Holocaust” is an animated doc short that reveals a dark family secret between two longtime friends: Jennifer, a German, and Noa, an Israeli. The film had its North American premiere at Hot Docs in May, and previously won best short animation at the 2021 Jerusalem Film Festival.

The film also screened in the Austrian Tricky Women/Tricky Realities, Krakow International Film Festival and Doc Edge International Film Festival in New Zealand. The deal was negotiated in collaboration with Cord Dueppe from the Berlin-based sales company Interfilm.

The short documentary “Herd” focuses on Na’ama, a 10-year-old who confronts questions of life and death as she works on her father’s cattle ranch. Director Omer Daida recently won the Most Promising Director award in the Tel Aviv International Student Film Festival, and, earlier this year, the Artistic Vision Award at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and the Students’ Film Competition at the Docaviv International Film Festival.

“Herd” premiered in IDFA as part of the shorts competition and was also screened at Doc Edge 2022, Pärnu Film Festival in Estonia, and the Ulju Mountain Film Festival in South Korea.

“Directed by young female filmmakers and focused on women, these stories combine delicacy, wisdom and a bold message with an uncompromising cinematic aesthetic,” said Hedva Goldschmidt, managing director of Go2Films. “We are happy to work with The New Yorker, home of compelling storytelling, which pays personal attention to every filmmaker.”

Gina Rodriguez and Joe LoCicero Relationship Timeline

It all started on set. Gina Rodriguez and her husband Joe LoCicero first met on a 2016 episode of Jane the Virgin — the show that shot her to stardom — but they didn’t start dating until months later.

In a May 2017 interview on Live With Kelly and Ryan, the actress noted that the New Jersey native didn’t make a move right away. In fact, it wasn’t until six months after their onset meet-cute that they ran into each other at a boxing gym.

“Do you think he tracked you down?” cohost Ryan Seacrest asked, to which the NYU alum joked, “Yes!”

Shortly thereafter, in January 2017, the pair made their first red carpet appearance at that year’s SAG Awards. Since then, LoCicero and Rodriguez have supported each other at numerous events, including when the I Want You Back actress sat in the front row to watch her partner become the California State Middleweight amateur Muay Thai Champion in June 2018.

One month later, the couple raised eyebrows with a vacation snap that showed off a large diamond sparkler on Rodriguez’s left finger. In August 2018, the Awake performer exclusively confirmed to Us Weekly that she was engaged.

“I have a very, very special man in my life. I am engaged. You’re the first people that I’ve told,” she gushed to Us at the time. “I am marrying a feminist. I am marrying a man that is incredible and loving and understanding and kind and patient. I’m marrying a really incredible human being. That what it is. I met a human that like, knows he’s a human.”

The pair made things official in May 2019 in an intimate ceremony. The Kajillionaire actress wore a white satin Pronovias gown before changing into a second dress for the reception. In the video from their special day, both Rodriguez and LoCicero appeared to get emotional as the CW alum made her way down the aisle.

“Thank you to my mother in law for the wedding of my dreams. And the village that helped her!” Rodriguez captioned the video from her nuptials via Instagram.

In July 2022, nearly three years after tying the knot, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together.

“This birthday hits different ❤️,” the Lost Ollie actress captioned an Instagram montage, including footage of the pair looking at a positive pregnancy test and crying.

Ashley Benson Erotic ’18 & Over’ Film: Early Access to $263 NFT Buyers

If you think the price of early-access premium VOD movies from major studios is steep, this will make your eyes roll.

For the launch of “18 & Over,” an indie horror film starring, produced by and co-created by Ashley Benson (“Pretty Little Liars”), the producers are granting an exclusive two-month streaming window to fans who buy one of 10,000 limited-edition NFTs with character art based on the movie.

The price of entry? The NFTs will go on sale for $263 each on Aug 5 — which, if they all sell out, would work out to a $2.63 million total haul. Then, starting Aug. 12, each NFT owner will be able to watch the “collector’s cut” of the film for a two-month period via a private link.

To be fair, producers Hercules Film Fund and Rhea Films say that “long-term holders” of the NFTs will receive perks in addition to early-access streaming, including exclusive access to the collectors’ community and virtual hangouts with the movie’s talent and director. In addition, NFT owners will receive “rewards in the form of a rebate linked to success in the traditional distribution market,” according to the companies. More info on the movie and the NFT drop is available at this link.

After the NFT-exclusive window, a theatrical cut of the film will be made available for traditional distribution. WME is handling worldwide sales.

Directed by Jimmy Giannopolous, “18 & Over” features an ensemble cast including Benson, Jon Foster, Jake Weary, Luis Guzman, Winnie Harlow, G Eazy, Duke Nicholson, A$AP Nast, John Robinson, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Pelas and Pamela Anderson. The movie’s original score was composed by G-Eazy, marking the artist’s first-ever film score.

In “18 & Over,” set during the COVID pandemic, Benson plays Vicky, who’s looking for an escape after going through a relationship breakup. While in a remote cabin, she models lingerie for her followers on an adults-only livestreaming website (called 18 & Over) — before the power goes out… and she’s terrorized by a masked, crowbar-wielding murderer.

The “18 & Over” NFTs will be sold through Nifty Gateway, the digital collectibles marketplace that hosted NFT drops for Warner Bros.’s “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and “The Matrix Resurrections.” NFT company Digital Nativ is overseeing the “18 & Over” NFT launch.

NFTs, a craze that took off in early 2021, provide a way to authenticate ownership of individual pieces of digital content, using distributed blockchain technology.

Watch the trailer for “18 & Over,” which features Benson in a bathtub donning a hockey mask:

Here’s what the NFT for Benson’s Vicky character looks like:

“18 & Over” was written by Diomedes Raul Bermudez and Giannopolous, with story by Bermudez, Giannopolous and Benson. The film is produced by Purpose Film’s Diomedes Raul Bermudez, Artemis Picture’s Siena Oberman, Cassius Corrigan and Ashley Benson. The film is executive produced by Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, Terry Dougas, and Jean-Luc de Fanti and Jamin O’Brien.

In partnership with Rhea Films, the Hercules Film Fund since 2015 has financed or co-financed several motion pictures, including “American Made,” directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise, “Good Time,” directed by the Safdie brothers and starring Robert Pattinson, and Brie Larson’s directorial debut “Unicorn Store,” released by Netflix.

Trevor St. John Joins ‘Young & the Restless’ in Mystery Role

“One Life to Live” star Trevor St. John has been tapped for a mystery role on “The Young and the Restless,” a representative from the CBS soap confirmed to TheWrap on Tuesday.

He begins taping soon and will make his first appearance later this year. The venerable daytime serial returns for its 50th season in September.

St. John is best known for his role as Todd Manning on “One Life to Live” after the exit of original star Roger Howarth, who objected to the villainous character’s redemption arc. He also played Manning’s twin brother, Victor Lord, Jr., reprising the role for the 2013 internet reboot of the series.

Most recently, he was a series regular on the CW’s “Roswell, Next Mexico,” and ABC’s “Promised Land,” both of which were canceled earlier this year.

St. John is represented by BRS/Gage Talent Agency and Tim Taylor at Luber Roklin Management.

Deadline first reported the news.

20 Best Lip Gloss and Oils ‘Glamour’ Editors Can’t Live Without

Wearing your best lip gloss on any given day always makes you feel like that girl. For years, it seemed like the beauty product couldn’t quite shake its association with velour Juicy Couture tracksuits and messy middle school first kisses (who didn’t keep a fresh tube of Lip Smacker lip gloss in their back pocket, just in case?). But it’s 2022 now, and we’re here to report lip gloss has shaken off its juvenile association to become the hottest cosmetic product of the year.

The reign of ultra-dry, matte liquid lips has recently fallen out of favor, with everyone from influencers and makeup artists instead opting for glosses and lip oils designed to deliver perfect shine. Thank Rihanna, who makes everything look good (her Gloss Bomb is one of her best-selling Fenty products), or Glossier, which popularized, well, anything glossy.

The latest iterations offer shine, color, and comfort across the board, and those sticky, hair-catching problems you remember from the ’90s and early ‘00s are firmly in the past. Aside from being a part of the “clean girl” makeup routine, hydrating formulas in lip masks and lip oils (hello, Dior Lip Glow Oil!) also double as incredible glosses. It’s a win-win.

Need proof? We asked Glamour editors to share their all-time best lip glosses. Here are the ones that won glowing reviews across the board.

Review: ‘Bullet Train’ goes off the rails, but Pitt doesn’t

Aboard the speeding locomotive of “Bullet Train” ride at least five assassins, one venomous reptile (a snake on the train), countless glib Guy Ritchie-esque slo-mo action sequences, and one bucket-hat wearing Brad Pitt.

It’s a lot of ingredients that go into this candy-colored, battle royale of a movie. But the only one that really matters is that last one. At 58, Pitt’s star power has never seemed so easy and so natural. Radiant in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” delicious in “The Lost City,“ Pitt glides into “Bullet Train” in an rarified state of cruise control. Seldom has a movie star seemed to be having so much fun.

In “Bullet Train,” which opens in theaters Friday, Pitt plays a hired gun by profession but little else. His code name is Ladybug. He doesn’t like guns. And in his first job back after a hiatus of self-reflection and therapy, he goes into lethal fights with great reluctance, spouting self-help slogans like “Hurt people hurt people“ in the midst of hand-to-hand combat. Pitt, a maximum movie star with a minimalist bent, is a hitman with no taste for hitting.

Ladybug, tasked to grab a very particular briefcase off a train headed from Tokyo to Kyoto, might not be up for the job, but the bigger question is whether “Bullet Train“ is a good enough vehicle for its biggest star. Director David Leitch, the stuntman-turned-director of “Atomic Blonde” and “Deadpool 2,” has brought the style and energy of a “John Wick” film (he co-directed the first) to a setting that has traditionally been associated with more subtle methods of killing.

But with films like Bong Joon Ho’s “Snowpiercer” and the Liam Neeson-led “The Commuter“ greasing the wheels, train movies have chugged along since the original “Murder on the Orient Express.” Adapted from Kōtarō Isaka’s pulpy novel, “MariaBeetle,” “Bullet Train” amps the carnage further and shifts the action to Japan.

But the location here is mostly just a neon-lit stage for a high-speed melee with an international ensemble, including Brian Tyree Henry (best of the bunch) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as bickering British “twins“; Andrew Koji as a Japanese assassin; a Mexican cartel veteran named the Wolf (Benito A. Martinez Ocasio, a.k.a. Bad Bunny); a dangerous young woman called Prince who fake cries her way out of nearly everything (Joey King); and Zazie Beetz’s killer known as the Hornet.

All are on the train for various criminal reasons ultimately connected to a Russian kingpin named the White Death. The actor playing this most fearsome character is best left to the third-act reveal, but that’s just one way “Bullet Train” plays around with star persona. There’s a cameo that answers Pitt’s in “The Lost City.” Another “Lost City” star, Sandra Bullock, is mostly only heard on the other end of a phone line, as Ladybug’s handler.

The copious flashbacks and quirky banter (Henry’s character has an outlook based around Thomas the Tank Engine) that accompany the juggling of all these characters in between bloody encounters is a familiar kind of framework recalling a long line of Quentin Tarantino knockoffs. In “Bullet Train,” a movie that proudly opts for style over substance, characters are introduced like videogame fighters, running gags get run into the ground and a winking irreverence lands somewhere in between playful and exhausting.

It’s no train wreck. Leitch’s film is colorful, cartoonish and well-choreographed. But the more-is-more manic energy of “Bullet Train“ eventually peters out, since that’s all the movie was ever running on. Well, that and Pitt. His charm alone does wonders for the movie, raising it at least to the level of watchable. When, in the finale, Ladybug sails comically unharmed through the wreckage, it captures the situation exactly. “Bullet Train” might go off the rails but Pitt remains bulletproof.

“Bullet Train,” a Columbia Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for strong and bloody violence, pervasive language, and brief sexuality. Running time: 126 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Batgirl movie, release shelved
Film

Warner Bros. has scrapped the Batgirl movie with no plans to release it

This is a bit odd. According to the New York Post, Warner Bros. will be scrapping the Batgirl movie, with no plans to release it… either theatrically or on HBO Max.

With a budget rumoured to come close to $90 million, this would be an expensive loss for the studio if it turns out to be true. The report states that a test screening of Batgirl was “so poorly received by moviegoers that the studio decided to cut its losses and run, for the sake of the brand’s future.” One source said that Warner Bros. thinks that “an unspeakable Batgirl is going to be irredeemable.” Umberto Gonzalez of The Wrap also confirmed the report, adding that in spite of reshoots and an increased budget, Batgirl just didn’t work when compared to the other DC movies.

Knox Goes Away: Michael Keaton to star in and direct a noir thriller written by Gregory Poirier

The Batgirl movie was originally developed for HBO Max when Toby Emmerich was in charge of the studio. The recent merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery found David Zazlav taking over, who is notorious for being a cost-cutter. He shut down CNN+ less than a month after the $300 million streaming service launched, so scrapping Batgirl wouldn’t necessarily be out of character. Although there had been discussions about giving Batgirl a theatrical release at one point, the project hadn’t been scripted or produced with that in mind. David Zazlav has also committed to making sure that future DC movies are big theatrical events, and it seems that Batgirl didn’t fit the bill of a DC blockbuster.

Batgirl stars Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Firefly, and Michael Keaton as Batman. Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah helmed the movie, which Christina Hodson scripted. Given the talent involved, it’s a shame that the Batgirl movie has been scrapped and won’t be released in any fashion, and all in the name of cutting costs.

Reviewers Gush Over New Album

On her new long-awaited new album “Renaissance,” Beyoncé draws from several decades of dance culture in a smart, sexy way that (mostly) has critics calling for a round of applause.

Most critics echo disco-club icon Grace Jones, who declares in a guest vocal on the club track “Move” that Bey is the “Queen of Culture.” But at least one critic found the album to be “more style than substance.”

“Renaissance” currently has a 93 score on Metacritic, with critics not seeming to agree whether track 12, titled “Thique,” is a “misfire” or a “standout.”

Here’s a roundup of reviews:

“Beyoncé sounds like she’s experiencing something personally new and privately glorious: unmitigated ecstasy. It takes different forms: bliss, obviously; but a sexy sternness, too. The exercise of control is as entertaining on this album as the exorcism of stress…. As expensive, production-wise, as ‘Renaissance’ sounds (one song credits two dozen writers, including samples and interpolations), Beyoncé’s singing here transcends any price tag. The range of her voice nears the galactic; the imagination powering it qualifies as cinema. She coos, she growls, she snarls, she doubles and triples herself.”

“The catalog of touchstones, samples and cameos on ‘Renaissance’ could double as a syllabus for a master class on the evolution of dance music as it has unfolded during Beyoncé’s lifetime — and in this era of easily accessible YouTube clips and streaming discographies, it should.”

“As far as seventh albums go, this one feels like as big a swing as ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ or ‘Ray of Light’ or ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ … But not even the most devoted member of the Beyhive could’ve predicted how thoroughly the 40-year-old superstar would follow through on her promise with the wild and ravishing ‘Renaissance,’ which came out Friday and immediately reshaped the conversation about 2022’s most important music…. ‘Renaissance’ is miles ahead of the competition.”

Fox News Calls Beyoncé ‘More Vile Than Ever’ for ‘X-Rated’ Lyrics on ‘Renaissance’

“The 28-time Grammy winner may be the only sovereign of pop to have truly evolved artistically while also expanding an enormous commercial empire…. Not everything is as rewarding on ‘Renaissance,’ though. ‘Thique’ is not exactly a misfire…. But for the woman who coined the actual Webster’s term ‘bootylicious’ some 20 years ago, ‘Thique,’ with its would-be salacious references to ‘that jelly, baby,’ ‘that candy-girl piñata,’ and ‘that oochie coochie la la’ come off a tad trite, as if Beyoncé absentmindedly consulted some instant IG caption generator.”

“There is little Beyoncé has to prove to anyone 25 years down the line, but the start of this ‘three act project’ proves that she’s still able to push herself and delve into new sonics, styles and ethos. On ‘Renaissance’, she’s added another remarkable record to her repertoire, this time one to continue leading the charge to bring Black culture back to the forefront of house and dance scenes. ‘Renaissance’ does precisely what it says on the tin; the revival of Black classics, and she makes sure a lot of love goes into that.”

“As our biggest pop stars increasingly turn to dance music for inspiration, Beyoncé focused her famous work ethic on the nuances of club culture for a challenging, densely-referenced album that runs circles around her similarly minded, Billboard-charting peers. For nearly a decade she has made pop music on her own terms, uninterested in the dusty edicts of the music industry and pointed about her intended audience; now pop fans bend to Beyoncé, not the other way around.”

Kelis Calls Out Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams for Not Clearing Song Sample With Her

“‘Renaissance’ feels both vitally current and elegantly classicist. ‘America Has a Problem’ is a bait-and-switch about sexual satisfaction powered by a hyperactive hi-hat. The latter track is one of ‘Renaissance’s weaker moments, a rework of the cheeky 1990 Kilo Ali cautionary tale ‘Cocaine (America Has a Problem)’ that simply doesn’t match Beyoncé’s finest moments as a rapper—already something like her fifth most significant skillset. And for proof, look no further than album standout “Thique.’”

PopMatters, John Amen: “A Post-COVID Soiree and Massive PR Campaign”

“While Renaissance never collapses into overt posturing, the album’s chief function, ultimately, is to highlight Beyoncé’s contemporaneity… As with many parties, however, particularly high-fashion or corporate galas, the gathering is rarely without a hierarchical motive, i.e., to advance the host’s reputation. ‘Renaissance’ succeeds as a post-COVID soiree and massive PR campaign, though one can’t help but note that the album occasionally sports more style than substance.”

Nichelle Nichols, Lieutenant Uhura from TV show “Star Trek”, dies at 89

The tremendous actress also singer and dancer Nichelle Nichols, who played amongst the most significant role in TV series “Star Trek”, died at the of 89 on Saturday per The Washington Post and later confirmed by her publicist. Nichols was born on 28 December 1932 in a large family, in Robins, Illinois. She was the third of six children. Growing up in Chicago was hard, but Nichols was determined and stayed to do some schooling. Shortly after she traveled back and forth between Los Angeles and New York trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible.

At the beginning of her career, she was best known for performances from musicals with her first appearance, in the early 1960s, “Kicks and Co” play by Oscar Brown, famous songwriter and playwright. However, the play did not run long which lead Nichols to modeling to help pay the bills. She was a beautiful model and made a name for herself on photoshoots.

Shortly after, Nichols began singing in Lionel Hampton and Duke Ellington bands touring with them all over the USA and Europe. Nicholas even began a long career as a teen supper club singer and dancer in Chicago. This made Nichols a true quadruple threat — she was a singer, actor, dancer, and model. It was only a matter of time before she would be noticed. After years on the circuit as a supper club singer and dancer, she began going on acting auditions.

She starred in small roles in both tv and films, before her big break came when she was given a starring role on Star Trek, she can be seen debuting her character n the 1963 episode of “The Lieutenant”.

When “Star Trek” started in 1996, she was the first black women appeared in a major TV series. While it might have been a time for change in the industry it was still a small one. Having Nichols on this show was monumental in showing those in the black community that there was a place for them on television and someone representing them as a powerful and strong woman.

Never one to shy away, she became famous for a scene that went down in history as not only one of the best kisses on television, but the first interracial kiss, when her character kissed James T. Kirk (William Shatner).

This was a defining moment that changed television forever. This kiss was more than just showing that people no matter what they look like could fall in love and be together — this was a moment where she moved the compass a little further to the left showing people that all women (and yes black women) have a voice, no what they want, and go after it. She was something to truly be admired.

Although she remains famous to this day for her role on Star Trek, she did appear in numerous roles over the course of her career. She was on Peyton’s Place, Head of The Class, and Heroes. But her real legacy had to be the role of Uhura and almost the entire film career she somehow was connected with it. She voiced her character in the animated episodes in the early 1970s, then played Uhura in six feature length films.

Additionally, she voiced the character in the animated but super popular series “Futurama”. Let us note forget, she was also nominated for an Emmy for her guest role in TV series “The Young and the Daring”.

Nichols turned heads again in 1977, when she announced she would be working with the Space Administration and National Aeronautics as a co-founder. Space became more than just a character for her and she really wanted to spend time exploring it, learning about it, and educating others. The program allowed for her to become an ambassador speaking all around the country. Her goal was to give more women and more diverse women a change to enter the space arena — and she did just that. She helped the organization hire more females and minority candidates for their training program that ever before.

What more can you say about Nichols? She was an inspiration for fans through her acting, but a champion for the underrepresented. She stood strong with her morals, was never scared of a little controversy, and was always willing to stand up for things she believed in. She spent years working with NASA to make sure she was able to follow through and support those who wanted to fulfill their dreams.

She will be missed for her work, her realignment of preconceived notions, and her tenacity. She is someone that helped more people than she will ever know. While there are no words to thank for these tremendous contribution she made to the world, and she’ll be in our hearts and mind forever and ever.

So thank you to Nichols for all of the work you put into the world, all of the good you did, and the legacy you leave behind for the rest of us to watch over and over. As fellow Trekkie’s would say — “Live Long and Prosper,” and you certainly have.

John Landgraf’s Peak TV Prediction: 2022 Will Have Most Series Ever

He’s been wrong before — he once said 2015 might be the peak. But Landgraf has numbers that back up 2022’s record-breaking status.

Last year set a record for the number of scripted original series for adults, but the “Peak TV” era probably hasn’t peaked just yet, at least if you ask FX Chairman John Landgraf. (As the television executive who coined the term, Landgraf would be a good person to ask. Then again, he’s made this claim before.)

During an executive session at the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday, the FX brand’s boss offered some tea-leaf reading about the seemingly never-ending output of more and more TV shows. “2022 will be the high watermark — in other words, that it will mark the peak of the ‘Peak TV’ era,” he said.

Landgraf has been wrong before, and he’s the first to admit that his prediction might be done “foolishly.” But he has data on his side, courtesy of the number-crunchers at FX research.

The first half of 2022 saw 357 scripted series launch across broadcast, cable, and streaming. That’s up 16 percent compared to the same time last year. And last year’s 559 shows set an all-time record, up 13 percent from the COVID-fueled decline in 2020 and up 23 percent from five years earlier.

Related

“Due to the pandemic, getting a true read on where scripted-series output might hit its top has been hard,” Landgraf said. “This year we’ve seen a tidal wave of scripted programming thanks to the bottleneck of COVID-delayed production finally clearing up.”

Back in 2015, speaking to the same audience of TV critics and reporters, Landgraf predicted that the number of scripted series would hit its peak in 2015 or 2016. He amended that the following year when he said he expected the peak to hit in 2019 followed by a decline the next year, when he bemoaned that there was “simply too much television” and warned of “oversupply” and the negative impact of tech monopolies on creativity.

So much has changed since then, including Landgraf’s tenor. Tuesday’s forecast came with no warnings or caveats; he painted it as “sticking my neck out” for some fun. Now, Landgraf’s employer Disney is one of the top streaming players and is tens of millions of subscribers ahead of its legacy competitors.

Disney has 205 million total subscribers across its streaming services, compared to leader Netflix’s 220.67 million subscribers. HBO and HBO Max have 76.8 million subscribers, Paramount has 62 million across its platforms, and Peacock has 28 million monthly active accounts.

“I think all of the major streaming services have now launched, right?” Landgraf said. “I think that process is complete. So in other words, I don’t see new, major purveyors of programming entering the scene as they have been, continuously, over the past decade or more. As a matter of fact, there are some prior purveyors of television programming that are kind of exiting the scene. So in other words, you’re at the point now where you’re not really adding suppliers, though you are, to some extent, subtracting suppliers.”

Streamers have started to cool off from earlier content-spending frenzies. Netflix is instituting belt-tightening after two consecutive quarters of subscriber losses. And Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav says he’s unwilling to overspend just to amass more subscribers.

Landgraf, who previously oversaw FX Networks, now finds himself shepherding original programming under the FX brand, content that premieres either on FX, FXX, or Hulu. “The FX original programming initiative has made a successful transition from primarily feeding linear cable channels to reconstituting itself as a multi-platform brand whose comprehensive streaming home in the U.S. is Hulu,” he said.

Time will tell if Landgraf finally got his Peak TV prediction correct. “It will take a year-and-a-half to find out if I’m right this time or I’ll have to eat crow yet again,” he said.

Tony Maglio contributed reporting.

Luke Bryan’s ‘Country On’ – Billboard

“Hey, hey, U.S.A./ We ain’t seen our better days.”

In a divisive era with many Americans skeptical about the future of the democracy, Luke Bryan’s new single, “Country On,” is a timely elixir, a four-minute reminder of the nation’s proud middle class, its work ethic and the sense of community that comes from simply doing what they do.

“When I’m onstage, and when I’m singing ‘Most People Are Good,’ I feel that most people are still that, and I feel like most Americans really support the American dream,” Bryan says. “There’s a lot of forces out there really trying to interrupt that, but the day that we wake up and feel like the United States can’t have better days, I think the whole spirit of the country is lost.”

See latest videos, charts and news

“Country On” experienced quite an evolution to become a blue-collar anthem. When singer-songwriter Styles Haury first proposed the idea during a 90-minute phone call with songwriter Mitch Oglesby in summer 2021, the title was “Hillbilly On,” as in “She loves it when I get my hillbilly on.”

“It got kicked around until it was ‘Country On,’” recalls Haury. “And I was like, ‘Yeah, like ‘carry on.’ And dude, that’s a huge post-COVID-19 thing, with all the craziness that’s going on in the world.”

“Finding that angle,” Oglesby adds, “really made the song what it is. It gave us avenues to say something.”

What that something would be didn’t become fully clear for another month or so. Oglesby had a September writing appointment in the basement of Nashville’s MV2 Entertainment with David Frasier (“Most People Are Good,” “Drinking Class”) and Mark Nesler (“Just to See You Smile,” “You Look Good in My Shirt”), and they batted around titles for a bit without finding one that got them excited. Oglesby offered up “Country On,” and his co-writers caught the value in its “carry on” connotation.

“We all need a pep talk,” says Nesler. “People that go unappreciated many times are really needing somebody to pat them on the back. What better way to say it than ‘Country On’?”

Oglesby cautioned that Haury was already involved and should be part of the process, though the song was mostly completed that day. “We didn’t know we’d finish it in a couple of hours,” Oglesby says. “That’s the thing about a great idea: The better the idea, the easier the song is to write.”

Nesler started playing a three-chord country progression with Southern rock overtones on acoustic guitar, and he hummed a passage that led naturally to the phrase “Country on.” “The melody that I was messing with enabled us to say the hook within the first 15 seconds or so of the song,” he explains. “We’d just write a bunch of these little verses and change it each time to a different person and their occupation.”

Oglesby found the first of those people at the rodeo — “Hey, cowboy, keep slinging that rope” — inserting him into the first spot in the chorus. After that, they carved out the jobs in order from the beginning — farmer, truck driver, bartender, fireman and soldier — instructing each of those blue-collar workers to “country on.” “The song,” notes Haury, “is a tip of the hat to the backbone of America.”

The list is hardly complete: It misses auto mechanics, construction workers, waiters, bus drivers and — hello! — music journalists. “We wish we could have had room to [add] nurses and doctors,” Frasier observes. “There’s a lot of people that didn’t get in that list, but I hope they still feel it the way we did.”

For the final stanza, they widened the focus from individuals to the Nashville music community, and then Frasier expanded further — “Hey, hey, U.S.A./ We ain’t seen our better days” — leading a cheer for a nation struggling to regain its direction and its optimism.

“I look at the world right now, and I go, ‘Are we leaving this place better like every generation had hoped to?’” says Frasier. “I’m afraid my answer is ‘No, we’re not.’ But even the next generation can live up to the line, ‘We ain’t seen our better days,’ and it may be up to them to bring that around. But I’ve got to believe that. That’s what gets you up and down the road every day.”

Nesler finished the demo later, making a slight change in the chorus melodies to provide some separation from the similarly structured verses. Oglesby made a demo as well, though Nesler sent his to producer Jeff Stevens around November. And it made quite the impression. “My heart filled with hope and pride for our country,” Stevens says. “And I don’t care how corny that sounds. I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing.”

He forwarded the “Country On” demo to Bryan, who had Stevens immediately place it on hold. Bryan responded to both the song’s sentiment and the title. “It’s a very uniting term, like about the Boston Marathon and you saw those shirts, with people uniting around ‘Boston Strong,’ ” he remembers. “I think ‘Country On’ is kind of that same emotion.”

They held on to the song until May, when Bryan started recording again at Nashville’s Ocean Way. But days before the session, Stevens reached back out to the songwriters to tweak it. He wanted to add another half verse, setting up a guitar solo and allowing them to repeat the “Hey, hey, U.S.A.” section a second time. He made that request with trepidation, recognizing that the update might harm their affection for “Country On.”

“All this stuff is like balancing a basketball on the head of a pin,” reasons Stevens. “You could mess it up.”

Oglesby and Frasier added much of the new half verse, focusing on the most important job — parenting — with a shoutout to “Hey, Mom and Dad.” Eventually, “Hey, hometown” sang better; Nesler revised the demo, and Bryan was still on board with it. At the session, he told the musicians to think of “Country On” as a modern-day version of Alabama’s “Forty Hour Week (For a Livin’)” or “Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler).”

The biggest challenge during the session was the electric guitar sound. Justin Ostrander and Kenny Greenberg both added parts, creating some heaviness without detracting attention from Bryan’s vocal. Ultimately, Ostrander played three guitar chords at the outset, leading into Ilya Toshinsky’s acoustic part. “There’s no signature licks, and the turnaround — after the actual lyric of the song — is being played on acoustic guitar, which is kind of unusual,” co-producer Jody Stevens notes.

Jenee Fleenor added a little extra punch later, and Sarah Buxton provided a female counterbalance to Perry Coleman’s harmonies. She ended up giving extra power to the closing vamp.

“Country On” won out over several other contenders as a single. Bryan was thinking of releasing it in August, but Capitol Nashville wanted to get it out around Independence Day, issuing it to country radio via PlayMPE on July 1. Bryan debuted it in concert in Virginia Beach, Va. — an area with several military bases — and the “Hey, hey, U.S.A.” line elicited the desired response. “It does all the right magical stuff,” he says.

“Country On” lifts No. 26-22 on the Country Airplay chart dated Aug. 6, and Bryan hopes it ends up helping America reclaim some of its classic spirit.

“The beauty of this country is we can openly talk about what’s wrong,” he says. “It’s never easy, but through that, hopefully, we can make the country better, and therefore, we ain’t seen our better days.”

“Where the Crawdads Sing” Review: Resilience, Independence, and The Shocking Twist

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Directed by Olivia Newman and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, and Harris Dickinson, Where the Crawdads Sing is a coming-of-age mystery/thriller, along with a romantic storyline for the main character, Kya. The movie opens with two young boys on bicycles, who stumble upon the body of a man near the fire tower in the North Carolina marsh. The narrative is told through flashback scenes, with the murder trial taking place in 1969.

Courtesy of Sony Pictures

After growing up in a home full of alcoholism and neglect, the reclusive Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones) has learned that you cannot trust anyone. She has been “othered” by the town of Barkley Cove, North Carolina, as the residents have called her the “Marsh Girl” since she was abandoned by her family and left to raise herself. She took interest in the flora and fauna of the marsh; she possessed a talent for life-like illustration, so she drew what she could see around her. Offering a feather as a gift, Tate (Taylor John Smith) comes along and befriends her. Over time they grow closer and when she is in her late teens, he teaches her how to read,  and they start to fall for each other. He encourages her to contact publishers about writing and illustrating a book before he leaves for college.

Courtesy of Sony Pictures

After Tate leaves for college, Kya meets Chase (Harris Dickinson), who is one of the former quarterbacks for Barkley Cove and a beloved resident of the town. Chase takes interest in her and takes her on a picnic; he tries to advance their relationship without considering Kya’s feelings but she gives him a chance. They develop a romantic connection, and he talks of marrying her and being in love with her, and she gives him a seashell necklace as a token of her affection. Despite spending so much time with her, he never introduces her to family or friends, nor does he try to integrate her into his life outside the marsh.

Kya eventually finds out that Chase is engaged, and she immediately severs their relationship, which upsets Chase to the point where he finds her in the marsh and rapes her as she fights him off and escapes. Kya becomes closed off again because of this horrid violation, and when Tate returns to town, she is initially upset with him for not returning on the Fourth of July like he promised, and they soon rekindle their romance. Tate and Chase fight, and while Kya is planning a trip to meet with publishers in South Carolina, Chase is murdered.

During the trial, it is mentioned that the seashell necklace was not on Chase’s body when he was found. Since Kya seemed to have a perfect alibi, she was deemed to be innocent. She and Tate decide to get married, Kya writes and illustrates several books, and they live happily ever after… until just after Kya dies of old age and Tate discovers the seashell hidden in one of her books, confirming that Kya was the one who shoved Chase off of the fire tower to meet his end, decades before Tate discovered the shell.

Two main themes in this movie are resilience and independence, as we see Kya develop and show resilience despite the trauma that she endured as a child and later as an older teen/adult, and the blossoming independence that Kya slowly embraces while meeting new people and letting them into her world. She had to be independent to survive, and she maintained that independence while interacting with the environment and forming relationships with the people who reach out to her.

Where this film lacks true suspense and the major conclusions are rushed, the cinematography, natural beauty of the filming location, and quality of performance were the highlights in the film. Kya’s character is well-developed, yet the timeline feels a bit jumbled because the script switches back and forth from the past to the trial a few too many times to make it easy to follow, and the other characters were not as dynamic as they could have been.  Beyond a few key personality traits and important interactions, Tate, Chase, Kya’s family, and several of the other character seemed to lack the substance needed to balance out Kya’s strong character. It was entertaining though, and I appreciated Edgar-Jones’ performance in this film. It was emotionally captivating and presented all-too-common societal issues that are relatable in the present as well as the past.

Jeremy Corbyn condemns UK decision to send weapons to Ukraine

Jeremy Corbyn has criticised the UK’s decision to send military aid to Ukraine, accusing the West of ‘prolonging and exaggerating’ Russia’s war.

The ex-Labour leader, who infamously refused to blame Russia for the Salisbury poisoning in 2018, said leaders should instead force a peace deal between the pair – turning to the African Union and Arab League, including Syria, for mediation.

He also bemoaned the fact that ‘Ukrainians are dying… and Russian soldiers are dying’ in an interview with a pro-Assad TV channel, whilst condemning NATO expansion for causing ‘greater strain and greater stress.’

Anti-NATO Corbyn’s soft touch on Putin

‘On Ukraine, I would not condone Russian behaviour or expansion. But it is not unprovoked. [T]here are huge questions around the West’s intentions in Ukraine.’ Morning Star, 2014

Asked if he supports NATO, Corbyn said: ‘I would want to see a world where we start to ultimately disband all military alliances.’ Times Radio, 2022

Refusing to point finger at Putin for Salisbury poisonings, he said: ‘If we are going to make a very, very clear assertion like that we have got to have the absolute evidence to do it. You have got to have incontrovertible evidence otherwise you reduce your ability to criticise other people.’ Andrew Marr Show, 2018

‘We ended up with NATO expanding into a global role, including its activities in Afghanistan and obviously its involvement in the Balkan war, and that has not always been a good thing.’ RFE/RL, 2022

NATO is an ‘engine for the delivery of oil to the oil companies’ – it ‘must give up, go home and go away’. Speech, 2014

Western alliance must focus on ‘reducing tensions in Europe and beyond’ and ‘de-escalate conflict with Russia [for] a wider perspective on the most serious threats to our common security’. Manifesto launch, 2019

A recent poll showed 61 per cent of Ukrainians are against ending the war until all territory occupied by Russia, including Crimea, is back under their control.

There is also a broad consensus between experts and analysts that striking a deal now would favour Moscow, allowing Putin to ‘freeze’ the war while rearming and reinforcing before restarting it at a time of his choosing – as he did in 2014.

But speaking to Al Mayadeen, a pro-Assad TV station based in Lebanon – which is controlled by Iran-backed proxy group Hezbollah – Corbyn argued the opposite.

He said: ‘What I find disappointing is that hardly any of the world’s leaders use the word “peace”, they always use the language of more war and more bellicose war

‘Ukrainians are dying and Ukrainians have gone into exile, thousands and thousands of them. And Russian soldiers are dying, conscripted young Russian soldiers are dying… Therefore there has to be more, much more, effort put into peace.’

Corbyn did say he ‘disagrees’ with the Russian invasion, but then parroted a Kremlin talking-point by adding that arming Ukraine will ‘prolong and exaggerate’ the war.

Meanwhile, he praised UN chief Antonio Guterres for travelling to Moscow to meet with Putin, insisting the global body should be at the forefront of negotiating peace.

If the UN cannot help, Corbyn suggested, then the African Union or Arab League – which includes Syria – should mediate because they ‘have no direct economic interest one way or the other’.

In fact, Russia has arms-dealing agreements with dozens of African nations from whom it also imports natural resources.

Moscow also has troops and paramilitaries stationed across the Middle East.

Ending the war would also allow Russian gas to start flowing into Europe once again, Corbyn added, suggesting that Germany ‘cannot survive’ without it.

Tobias Ellwood, chairman of the defence select committee and a former defence minister, told The Telegraph: ‘[Corbyn] is illustrating yet again why he would have been such an inappropriate prime minister for the nation.

‘He doesn’t understand that the geopolitical consequences of supporting democracy occasionally means using hard power.

‘This is deeply irresponsible for a senior politician. I hope his comments are not seen to undermine the wider support for, and the commitment to, supporting Ukraine following this unprovoked invasion by Putin.’

Corbyn currently sits in parliament as an independent MP after having the whip withdrawn by Labour because he said anti-Semitism in the party had been overstated for political reasons.

He was also kicked out of the party, though he was reinstated by the membership.

Al Mayadeen was established in 2012 by journalists and executives from Al-Jazeera and Al Arabiya, some of whom were upset by their criticism of Syria’s rulers.

Its head of news at the time was married to a PR adviser for dictator Assad – also a close ally of Russia – and it has been accused of getting support from his regime.

The station has also been accused of getting support from Iran, though it has denied all such charges. Previous guests have included the likes of George Galloway.

Britain has been one of the largest providers of military aid to Ukraine, having stepped up to provide anti-tank launchers even before Putin ordered his invasion.

Kyiv said the weapons proved invaluable at destroying convoys of tanks and trucks headed towards the capital in the early days of the war.

Britain has also provided valuable anti-air defences to protect Ukrainian cities from Russian jets and cruise missiles, anti-ship rockets to guard the coast, and long-range rocket artillery to blow up ammo dumps and command posts.

Russia is currently five months into what was supposed to be a days-long war in Ukraine, with its main offensive largely stalled.

Kyiv’s men are now trying to reverse some of the territorial gains Putin’s men have made since late February, and are targeting the southern city of Kherson.

President Zelensky has acknowledged the ultimate need for a peace deal, but says it will be up to the Ukrainian people to chose when and on what terms the war stops.

‘We have no right to do this… this land belongs to Ukrainian people,’ he said in a recent interview.

Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president, said recently that peace will ‘be on our terms’ – without spelling out exactly what that means.

Before the war, Moscow had been demanding that Ukraine agree never to join NATO, cede territory in its eastern Donbas, and that the alliance should withdraw all forces from ex-Soviet states – terms categorically ruled out by allies and the US.

Ben Affleck to Return as Batman in Upcoming Aquaman Sequel

With the upcoming release of The Flash next year, among the many controversial aspects of the film, and DC/Warner Bros,(from the controversies of Ezra Miller, the seeming lack of Henry Cavill’s Superman, etc.) one of the most notable aspects that has drawn the most attention were reports that it would be Ben Affleck’s last major performance as the Caped Crusader, and that he would be replaced by Michael Keaton, returning from Batman(1989) and Batman Returns, taking his place as the DCEU’s Batman in Affleck’s stead.

In his DCEU debut film Batman V Superman : Dawn of Justice, Ben Affleck’s performance was positively received, despite the darker characterization of the iconic hero receiving mixed reviews.  While the Ultimate Edition added in many scenes which better explained the actions the character took, it wasn’t enough to save reception of the character by the time of the theatrical cut of Justice League in 2017.  Given that films notorious behind the scenes issues, it didn’t come as a huge surprise when reports suggested that Affleck wished to be done with the DCEU.  Even after the release of the superior Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which to many people redeemed Affleck’s portrayal, given the character’s journey of attoning for his mistakes in Batman V Superman, it had been believed that Affleck was done with the role.  In a way, it’s not too different from what happened with Andrew Garfield’s iteration of the iconic Marvel web-slinger, which to many was redeemed with 2021’s Spider-Man : No Way Home.

Courtesy of Warner Bros.

Hence, for many, it came as a surprise when it was confirmed that Ben Affleck would return for some additional scenes to be included in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.  That said, it’s not expected for him to have too major a role in the film, given the majority of the movie has already been filmed.  Still, for fans hoping to see more of Affleck in some capacity, it comes as a minor win.

As for what this means for the future of the DCEU, it’s frankly uncertain.  On top of the many controversies surrounding certain stars like Amber Heard and Ezra Miller, fans eagerly await for information regarding whether or not Henry Cavill will return as Superman, especially after an incident at SDCC when Dwayne Johnson was booed by the crowd after being unable to answer whether or not he’d face said Cavill’s iteration of the character.  The popular wrestler has indicated that he wishes to face of against the Man of Steel, Cavill’s iteration in particular, at some point, and as it stands, it seems as though the DCEU is setting this character up to be an important figure moving forward, in particular hinting towards a showdown with Shazam in the future.

Regardless, even if Affleck won’t be appearing for much longer, the fact that the character will have a bit more screen time before being sent off will be a welcome sight for fans.

Elliott Management Reveals Pinterest Stake, Says It Will Push For Changes – The Hollywood Reporter

The social photo platform Pinterest got a new CEO a month ago, and now it has a new largest shareholder.

Elliott Management, the investment firm known for its activism, disclosed on Monday that it is now the company’s largest individual shareholder, citing its “highly strategic business with significant potential for growth.”

Pinterest shares soared more than 12 percent when the market opened Tuesday on the news.

In a statement, Elliott executives Jesse Cohn and Marc Steinberg suggested that it had thrown its full support behind Bill Ready, who joined the company at the end of June, with co-founder and CEO Ben Silbermann moving to an executive chairman role.

“As the market-leading platform at the intersection of social media, search and commerce, Pinterest occupies a unique position in the advertising and shopping ecosystems, and CEO Bill Ready is the right leader to oversee Pinterest’s next phase of growth,” the statement said, adding that Elliott would continue to work with the executive team “as they drive toward realizing Pinterest’s full potential.”

Elliott has long been active in the media and tech sector. The firm is in the process of trying to take the media measurement giant Nielsen private in a $16 billion deal.

Previously, the company went hostile on Twitter, forcing changes to the company’s board after threatening to oppose Jack Dorsey as CEO. Elliott also went hostile with AT&T, ultimately convincing executives there to reevaluate their holdings (AT&T subsequently spun out both DirecTV and WarnerMedia). It also previously sparred with Universal over a financing deal.

The statement on Pinterest suggests that the firm has been privately engaging with the company for some time, and may have helped spur on the CEO shakeup.

King Princess: Hold On Baby Album Review

Cheap Queen, the debut album by King Princess, played like one of those summer nights that stretches on forever. Across a series of louche, Mellotron-heavy ballads, the New York songwriter and producer born Mikaela Straus sang about shooting the shit with friends and exchanging furtive glances with girls across crowded parties, each scene rendered with the insouciant, reflexive cool of an Eve Babitz story. It was a debut whose supreme confidence belied the fact that Straus first became famous after their Patricia Highsmith-referencing debut single “1950” went viral in early 2018. Where so many musicians react to virality with hesitance—quickly shifting gears or denouncing their early work—Straus delivered on her early promise with the grace and mien of a star.

Like Cheap Queen, Straus’ second record Hold On Baby is urbane and self-possessed, the work of a keen-eared musician coming into their own as a producer and stylist. She sounds even more like herself: More flexible as a vocalist, more cutting as a lyricist, more confident in her own power to bridge gaps between disparate styles. If Cheap Queen’s palette was ambiguously vintage—all old-school soul flourishes, redone as to slot in easily somewhere between Troye Sivan and Lorde—Hold On Baby firmly positions Straus as someone who came of age in the 2010s, when indie rock was hitting its mainstream peak.

Working alongside a murderers’ row of mainstream-indie heavy hitters including Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Ethan Gruska, Shawn Everett, and Mark Ronson, Straus pulls influences liberally but never thoughtlessly: A Strokes-y guitar line lopes through “Cursed,” while “Crowbar” nods to Sufjan Stevens’ fluttering piano ballads; the piano at the beginning of “Dotted Lines” recalls Rostam Batmanglij and Ariel Rechtshaid’s work on Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires of the City, and “Sex Shop” feels of a piece with the alienated sexuality of St. Vincent’s Strange Mercy. These references never feel winky or obvious, in large part because Straus’ own sense of mood—their fondness for warm tones and spacious atmospherics that can turn cold and claustrophobic in a second—always takes precedence. She presides over the affair with a cool hand and a keen awareness of when to pull back—the restrained elegance of someone who’s spent most of their life hanging around studios.

Hold On Baby is a more solemn record than its predecessor. The energizing frisson that Straus found on Cheap Queen has been supplanted by anxiety and despondence. Hold On Baby isn’t a breakup album; instead Straus finds inspiration in the tensions that arise in a long-term relationship. On “Hold On Baby Interlude,” they describe themselves as “a chipped tooth with the nerve exposed,” and that queasy tension pervades the album. The plush, weightless love song “Winter Is Hopeful” curdles its sweet nothings (“I’m always thinking, thinking, thinking of you”) with ribbons of acid: “But you never believe it.” Straus practically whispers the lyrics; it feels like she’s practicing lines from across the room rather than actually addressing the object of her desire. “Change the Locks,” one of a handful of songs produced with Aaron Dessner, explodes from pleading minimalism into booming, gritted-teeth arena rock, even though one of its primary tensions is impossibly small: “Losing your mind over something I wore/Just ’cause it’s yours.”

‘White Noise’ to Open the New York Film Festival

“White Noise,” the latest project from the director and screenwriter Noah Baumbach, will be the opening-night film of the 60th New York Film Festival, organizers announced Tuesday.

The festival, which runs Sept. 30 to Oct. 16, will be holding the North American premiere of the film; its world premiere will open the 79th Venice Film Festival later this month.

Baumbach directed the film and adapted the screenplay from Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel of the same name, which won the American Book Award for fiction that year and focuses on themes of American family life amid repetitive and overwhelming reminders of death.

The film follows a college professor and his family as they are forced to evacuate their home because of an industrial accident. From there, they must cope with the unavoidable and unrelenting reminders of death as stories of sudden fatalities, school evacuations and toxic waste disasters fill the airwaves.

“White Noise” stars Adam Driver as Jack Gladney, a “Hitler studies” professor and father of four. Greta Gerwig plays Babette, Gladney’s wife. Other cast members include Don Cheadle, Jodie Turner-Smith, Sam Nivola and Raffey Cassidy.

This is Baumbach’s latest collaboration with Gerwig, his partner. They have co-written several movies, including “Frances Ha” (2012) and “Mistress America” (2015), both of which he directed, and “Barbie,” which she is directing and which is set for release in 2023.

Baumbach’s other credits include “The Squid and the Whale” and “Marriage Story,” which both earned him Academy Award screenplay nominations.

In a statement, Baumbach explained that as a child he attended the New York Film Festival with his father and later premiered his first movie, “Kicking and Screaming,” there in 1995. Other Baumbach films have been chosen for the event’s Main Slate over the years, but “White Noise” is the first of his productions to open the festival.

Following the premiere, the movie will be available for streaming on Netflix later in 2022.
