What is a film treatment?

It’s a multi-page document written in prose, that tells the story that happens in your screenplay. It is a synopsis, with action, sparse dialogue, and works as a roadmap for the reader, producer, and writer.

This is your story, broken down into an easy-to-follow document, that anyone who picks it up can grasp immediately.

And get excited about.

This document must be engaging to any agent, assistant, executive, or layperson on the street. Your screenplay treatment will only shine with hard work.

Why do you need a script treatment for your film?

‘Wall-E’

Pixar

Screenwriters find treatments are beneficial when it comes to shopping the work around town.

They’re also great for hashing out ideas before entering a draft, and to see if that kernel of inspiration is worth pursuing as your next project.

Another thing I love about them?

They do a lot of the heavy lifting when you’re trying to figure out your movie or TV show’s tone.

It’s your chance to be snarky, emotional, and nail the world of your story before you even open your screenwriting software.

It’s like a dry-run. And it can be fun to do it, too.

Let’s be honest; it’s hard to pitch your idea out-loud to people. A script treatment gets all the details out on the page and entertainingly spins them into a yarn worth retelling.

If you can get the treatment down, the pitch is a lot easier.

How long should a script treatment be?

While a script can be 80-120 pages, your treatment’s length will vary.

When I write mine, I usually try to keep them around 10-12 pages. I include act breaks, opener, and closing scene.

But some people do a real quick version all on one page.

If I’m making one for a TV show, it might skew longer. But you don’t want to confuse a script treatment with a show bible, or even a pitch deck. This treatment should cover the pilot and probably will become a section in the bible.

Lots of people don’t add dialogue to their treatments, but sometimes I’ll add one or two lines to evoke emotions or even some jokes.

You certainly don’t want to go overboard on the dialogue here. The dialogue will likely change, and you don’t want someone to bump on the idea because the lines you include don’t radiate off the page.

Still, there are no definitive rules about how you do this, so make rules that work for you.

This is your chance to convey your story the best way possible. Maybe that means outlining characters, spending time on paragraphs describing the world, or even just giving a state of the union on why you NEED to write this movie.

Let this synopsis speak for you and spark more ideas.

Film Treatment Template

How-to-write-a-film-treatment

This is the outline I use when I start this process. It’s not perfect, but it prompts me and starts getting me going.

Use it as a leaping off point and customize it for your needs.

So without further ado, check out our film treatment template.

Put your voice into this film treatment sample!

Logline: Sum up the story in one sentence.

Characters: Give us only the main characters, and make us fall in love with them.

Opening Scene: Where are we? What’s happening? How does it convey the tone?

Act One: Who’s the movie/tv show? What’s the world?

Act Two: What’s the narrative thrust? What brings these characters together and then breaks them apart?

Act Three: If everything is broken, how do these characters put it back together in the end?

Final Scene: The whole movie/show has been leading up to this moment, what happens in the end, and where do we leave everyone? Is there room for a sequel?

I take all these headings and expand upon them.

You want the experience of reading this to be similar to that of watching the movie. It should have all the eventual favorite scenes that will be a blast to write.

It should take you through all the big emotions.

Let’s look at two successful writers and see what they have to offer on the subject,

Why Write a Treatment?

Writing Fight Scenes

‘John Wick’

Lionsgate

I know I got you excited in the opening about development executives loving treatments, but there are a few things you have to come to terms with… the first being that treatments don’t usually sell.

Once in a while, someone will option an idea based on the treatment.

But that rarely happens. Which leads us to an important question…

Why write these in the first place?

I find them to be the first place where I can see if a story can sustain 90 minutes, or if a TV show has what it takes for me to write the pilot.

Treatments are where I explore ideas in greater depth. It’s where I feel free to make mistakes, to find out what happens in Act II, and to nail my opening and closing scenes.

After I’m satisfied with my pass, I usually give them to my manager so he can get a sense of my latest project.

After I get my manager’s feedback, I either start writing, or I share with some executives who might have been interested in the idea.

As you know, the best reason to write a script after the treatment process is that someone is paying you to do it!

Treatments rarely get you paid, but it’s good to try!

Also, as we said it’s a great place to explore your idea and get people excited.

Film script treatment samples and examples

Even the greats write treatments for their projects. So I figured it would help to include some examples by the pros.

You’ll quickly see that these come in all shapes and sizes. One of the ones I love checking out is from the unmade James Cameron’s Spiderman.

Check out how he evokes the tone and story while also keeping it playful. You’ll also see that he loves to use dialogue too.

Screenshot_2019-07-23_17Credit: James Cameron

Turns out, this James Cameron guy is a pretty good writer, especially in this film treatment sample.

But let’s take a look at a more traditional example from the screenwriter, John August. This is his treatment for a TV show called “The Circle.”

This is opening page:

Screenshot_2019-07-23_17Credit: John August

Right off the bat, you can see that August’s approach is entirely different from Cameron. He’s much more concerned about building out the logic of the world and how the show will function.

Again, neither example right or wrong; they are just two different approaches given the subject matter.

Remember, never write a treatment for free

Free work is the bane of all writer’s existence. If you don’t know how to turn down the offer or suggestion that you do free work the WGA has you covered check out this video:

That said, the treatment process is still an excellent tool for your writing. There are also plenty of places that will compensate you fairly for that work.

Wrapping up script treatments

A treatment is a great way to organize your thoughts about a project. While they may not be the most commercially viable things, they’re great ways to get on a development executive’s good sides and to see if your idea is worthwhile in the marketplace. They can also help you with agents and managers (check out our complete guide on representation here).

This is also your first line of defense against writer’s block, and it’s a “wonder tool” to get your intentions on the page. Hopefully, the movie treatment helps you.

If you have other sections you use in your treatments, or have specific treatments you love, let us know in the comments!

Matt Damon was ready to bury the hatchet over his long-standing fake feud with Jimmy Kimmel to support the comedian’s late night talk show staff salaries.

According to Kimmel, Damon and Ben Affleck offered to pay the salaries of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” staff writers amid the ongoing WGA strike.

“Ben Affleck and the despicable Matt Damon contacted me and offered to pay our staff for two weeks,” Kimmel said during the recent episode of his “Strike Force Five” podcast with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver. “A week each, they wanted to pay out of their own pockets our staff.”

Fallon responded that Damon and Affleck are “good people” for offering. Kimmel, however, turned it down, saying that it wasn’t the actors’ responsibility to do so.

The “Strike Force Five” podcast recently launched with proceeds from the Spotify show going to the employees of late night shows “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.”

Kimmel added, “Are you guys getting stir-crazy? Are you ready to go back to work? Because as you know, I was very intent on retiring right around the time where the strike started, and now I realize, like, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s kinda nice to work.’ You know, when you are working, you think about not working.”

Kimmel previously kept his staffers on payroll for two weeks during the start of the WGA strike. “Strike Force Five” focuses on the respective comedians’ perspectives on the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes; the series will run for at least 12 episodes, with each host taking turns moderating the panel.

“Oppenheimer” actor Damon previously spoke out about the SAG strike, telling Variety that the strike is “really about working actors” and not celebrity faces of Hollywood.

“It’s $26,000 to qualify for health coverage and a lot of people are on the margins and residual payments are getting them across that threshold,” Damon said. “This isn’t an academic exercise. This is real life and death stuff. Hopefully we get to a resolution quickly. No one wants a work stoppage, but we’ve got to get a fair deal.”

Damon told Deadline on the red carpet that the strike would be “tough” for 160,000 actors in the SAG union. “Nobody wants a work stoppage but if our leadership is saying that the deal isn’t fair, then we’ve got to hold strong,” the Oscar winner said earlier this year. “It’s the difference between having healthcare and not for a lot of actors, and we’ve got to do what’s right by them.”

What if we told you the way you comb hair is wrong? While it might sound like a gig that you have had down perfectly, you might be doing it wrong all your life. Such was the case for me, which I discover in a convrrsation with Natasha Nasta, style director at Jean-Claude Biguine Salons. While your reflex action might be to run a comb from your scalp till the end, this technique could be secretly causing more hair loss and breakage than you realize.

“When combing, the goal is to avoid putting excessive pressure on the scalp,” Nasta explains. “I almost always see people starting to comb from the scalp, a practice that can exert undue pressure on knotted hair. When you begin combing from the mid-lengths to the ends and then move towards the scalp, this technique minimizes hair damage and wear and tear.”

From your choice of comb to the manner in which you approach detangling, there are several mistakes that could be robbing your hair of its strength and vitality while you comb hair. Ahead, Nasta shares the do’s and don’ts to keep in mind while you comb hair to ensure it stays as healthy as can be.

Harsh combing

Combing your hair harshly can lead to breakage and hair loss. For best results, it is advisable to apply a serum, hair oil, or leave-in conditioner before combing to reduce breakage and make the process smoother.

Detangle smartly

Instead of trying to hack your way through harsh knots with maximum pressure, it helps to reach for a detangling serum or cream to be applied on the mid-lengths and ends, focusing on the knots. Then, use a wide-toothed comb to gently remove the knots while avoiding excessive force to prevent breakage and hair loss.

Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross Wide-Tooth Comb

Comb wet hair with care

Since wet hair is more fragile, it is advisable to avoid applying more tensile pressure on the sensitive strands. Instead, towel dry your hair and wait until it is 40% to 60% dry before running a wide-toothed comb through the length.

Be careful with back-combing

Back-combing frequently can cause breakage near the roots and mid-lengths of the hair. If a certain hairstyle necessitates back-combing, apply oil on the scalp and hair at night and then wash carefully the next day. Leaving the oil overnight helps soften and naturally detangle the hair.

A lifelong Long Island resident is down on her luck when she comes across an intriguing job listing on Craigslist: a wealthy family looking for someone to enter a “romantic relationship” with their 19-year-old son before he leaves for college. Hilarity ensues when the pair first meet, as Percy mistakenly accuses Maddie of trying to kidnap him in Sony Pictures’ ‘No Hard Feelings.’

The raunchy R-rated comedy has all the classic premise of an early 2000s romcom with added modern and updated elements. The refreshing take on this story satisfied audiences looking for a fun time in theaters and resulted in box office success, earning over $50.4 million domestically and over $86.3 million worldwide – which is quite impressive for an R-rated comedy.

Although the film includes crass sexual innuendos and hilarious physical comedy, there is a ton of emotion and sweetness at the center of it all due to Jennifer Lawrence’s emotional and committed performance.

The official synopsis for ‘No Hard Feeling’ is below:

“On the brink of losing her childhood home, Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) discovers an intriguing job listing: wealthy helicopter parents looking for someone to “date” their introverted 19-year-old son, Percy, before he leaves for college. To her surprise, Maddie soon discovers the awkward Percy is no sure thing.”.

Along with ‘No Hard Feelings,’ other raunchy and R-rated comedies such as Adele Lim’s ‘Joy Ride’ and Elizabeth Bank’s ‘Cocaine Bear’ – which has crossed over $87.6 million worldwide – have been a hit with the audience. The financial success of ‘No Hard Feelings’ goes to show that there’s definitely a desire to see this genre.

Jennifer Lawrence’s performance is the driving force behind this movie – underneath all the crass jokes lays a damaged soul with a complicated past. Once the softer side of Maddie is revealed, she becomes relatable, and the film takes an unexpected emotional turn.

The movie is co-written by Gene Stupnitsky and John Phillips and was based on a real-life Craigslist ad, though the rest of the story is fictional.

For much of Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s subdued but stirring repositioning of the Elvis myth from the perspective of the woman who spent 14 years as his girlfriend and wife, there’s a sense of an emotionally immature man regularly taking a doll out of its box to play romance or dress-up or even kink one night when they drop acid. But he remains determined always to return her to her original packaging, in this case that of an unworldly 9th grade schoolgirl.

The beauty of this probing study of a lonely private world in the glare of the public eye is that while it appears on the surface to show a protagonist without agency, manipulated and compartmentalized since her teens, the Priscilla Presley portrayed here with moving emotional transparency by Cailee Spaeny is a self-possessed woman always attuned to her needs, who emerges from intoxication to begin a long, painful but ultimately decisive process of reassessment.

Priscilla

The Bottom Line

An impeccable union of director and subject.

Venue: Venice Film Festival (Competition)
Release date: Friday, Oct. 27

Director-screenwriter: Sofia Coppola, based on the memoir Elvis and Me, by Priscilla Beaulieu Presley with Sandra Harmon

1 hour 53 minutes

Few filmmakers are as thematically cohesive or as perceptive in their intimate attention to the inner lives and complex identities of young women as Coppola, making it tough to think of a director better equipped to guide us through this story, familiar in its contours but revelatory in this fresh point of view.

The primary source was Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me, written with Sandra Harmon, but there are few if any suggestions of the usual constraints of an officially sanctioned version. (The subject also is credited as an executive producer.)

Coppola has been respectful, stepping delicately around the potentially sensitive subject of the couple’s age difference — they met and began a protracted courtship when Priscilla was 14 and Elvis 24 — but the director appears to have been free to mold the material to her own thematic interests and stylistic signatures.

The closest title in Coppola’s filmography to Priscilla might seem to be her previous foray into biographical drama, Marie Antoinette. But although there are a few small elements in common — a boldly anachronistic music choice here and there; a fascination with the decorative trappings of femininity — the new movie feels closer to the director’s 1999 feature debut, The Virgin Suicides.

The dreamlike veil that hung over that film is echoed in the feeling here of experience pulled from memory, with its deep pools of tenderness, sorrow and regret, and there are similarities in the direct access to the burgeoning desires, the swoony reveries and the rebellious drives of teenage womanhood.

The title sequence is pure Sofia Coppola, with every detail of Priscilla’s costuming to play the envied role of girlfriend to Elvis (Jacob Elordi) captured in loving detail by Philippe Le Sourd’s camera to the strains of The Ronettes’ “Baby I Love You” — bare feet with red painted toenails on pink shag carpet; industrial strength eyeliner being plastered on; the careful application of spidery false eyelashes; a gentle misting of Aqua Net. The director has always understood the evocative power of images and sounds to put us in a very specific world.

The film captures the giddy sensation of what it was like to go from being a bored Army brat, sipping coke at the diner counter of a U.S. Air Base in 1959 West Germany, to become the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s chosen one, ushered into the halls of Graceland. Even more so, the master bedroom, a shock of gaudy bad-taste bordello style.

Spaeny has no trouble passing for a teenager in those early scenes while Elvis was serving in Germany. Priscilla seems to be pinching herself as she sits demurely on a sofa watching him entertain his party guests with “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On” at the piano. She floats down the corridors at school and daydreams through class. While her parents (Dagmara Dominczyk and Ari Cohen) try to halt the romance before it gets started, Priscilla’s willfulness wears them down, as does Elvis’ old-fashioned Southern courtesy when they insist he come pick her up himself for dates.

Some audiences no doubt will bristle at a 14-year-old girl in a sexually adjacent situation. But Coppola handles that aspect nonjudgmentally, instead focusing on how Elvis uses his sadness over his recently deceased mother and his longing for home to convince Priscilla that they’re kindred spirits. Their first kiss is a rhapsodic thrill set to “Crimson and Clover,” but actual sex doesn’t come into it until much later, even after Priscilla starts trying to instigate it.

More than other portraits of Elvis, this one paints him as sexually dysfunctional, with a Madonna complex that makes him keep putting on the brakes when things risk “getting out of hand,” insisting that he’ll decide when it’s the right time.

Even while Priscilla’s still in school, he’s giving her uppers to get through her classes and downers to get to sleep. When he takes her to Vegas, she gets her first taste of how controlling he can be, shooting down her wardrobe choices in favor of dresses he chooses and telling her to dye her hair black and use more eye makeup. During a visit back to Germany, her folks are startled to greet their 17-year-old daughter at the airport with a disheveled bouffant and smudged mascara. By that point, they know they’ve lost her.

Around the same time, Priscilla starts realizing how much time she’ll spend alone reading fan magazine accounts of film-shoot romances that Elvis denies, while her behavior is policed by his father Vernon (Tim Post). The latter’s partner Dee (Stephanie Moore) tells her sharply that she needs to stop making a public display of herself when she’s sitting on the lawn playing with the poodle Elvis gave her, in view of fans behind the Graceland gates.

Long before the prying lenses of paparazzi and social media made such circumspection standard practice for celebrities, Priscilla is made to feel uncomfortable in the bubble. Spaeny stealthily dials up the melancholy of her increasing imprisonment, even as Priscilla remains caught up in the fairy tale of being American pop royalty living a life of romantic bliss.

Coppola suggests that she was always treated as an outsider and that Elvis was an overgrown boy who often preferred to goof off with his buddies than spend time with her. When she starts displaying more backbone and telling him that she needs to feel desired, he seems too stunned by a woman speaking up for herself in that way to take her seriously. Instead, he infantilizes his “little one,” telling her, “Be a good girl.”

Coming just over a year after Austin Butler put a memorable stamp on the role in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Elordi finds his own way into the character, pouring seductive charm and undeniable magnetism into the sad eyes and sleepy speech patterns. But he never shies away from the more off-putting traits — the fits of pique, the petulance, the evasiveness and dishonesty.

He consistently blocks her set visits when he’s in production on a movie or sends her home early on the rare occasions she does get to join him. Her confinement at Graceland chafes more and more, with Vernon barking at her like she’s just another member of the entourage or staff. When they finally do get married, things improve only briefly, and the birth of their daughter, Lisa Marie, makes him a proud father, but he refuses to touch Priscilla for months afterwards: “I just don’t want to hurt you, baby.”

There are amusing moments suggesting the extent to which Priscilla is playing a part, either by requirement or choice, like her applying eyelashes and teasing up her hair as she’s going into labor. But theirs is a marriage that’s never on equal terms, and Spaeny’s performance becomes increasingly moving once Priscilla’s rose-colored glasses are permanently off and her isolation is compounded.

At a time when most such epiphanies in movies come with a Big Important Self-Worth Speech like the one satirized in Barbie, Coppola deserves credit for making Priscilla’s awakening and steadily building resolve a subtle process. Some may find this underpowered and want more fireworks from the movie. But Coppola has always been a filmmaker who coaxes out feelings rather than blasts them with emphatic declarations, and the nuanced restraint of her writing and direction here are very much points in Priscilla’s favor.

The film’s poignancy is that of a young woman overwhelmed — some might say bamboozled — into a life that is never quite real, stepping back and taking control by walking away, even though she still loves her messed-up husband.

The movie’s textures, both visually and in terms of mood, are sumptuous. Le Sourd’s clear-eyed yet somehow simultaneously hazy camerawork savors the soft pastels and gold accents of Tamara Deverell’s richly detailed period production design and Stacey Battet’s stylish costumes. The latter cover the late ‘50s through to the early ‘70s, often flirting with kitsch but never to a distracting degree. Even some of Elvis’ more iconic outfits, like the black leather suit or white bellbottom jumpsuit with the half cape, seem reinterpreted.

Music by French synth-pop band Phoenix fits with Coppola’s firm command of mood in ways that recall the Air soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides, further enhanced by a multitude of sharp song choices. The use of Dolly Parton’s original “I Will Always Love You” as Priscilla makes her exit is beautiful.

The minimal screen time given to Priscilla in Lurhmann’s Elvis was not unusual by the standards of previous biographical treatments. Coppola flips the balance here to an extent that risks rubbing hardcore Elvis fans the wrong way, putting the performer in a less-than-flattering though never unfair light. But it elegantly upgrades a key player in the Elvis legend from the sidelines, and anyone attuned to Coppola’s distinctive wavelengths will find it a pleasurably emotional experience.

Rema and Burna Boy each received three awards at the 2023 Headies Awards. The show, which celebrates Pan-African and Afrobeats talent, was held on Sunday (Sept. 3) at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta.

Rema won best male artist, digital artiste of the year and African artiste of the year. In addition, Selena Gomez, who teamed with Rema on the global hit “Calm Down,” won international artiste of the year, while Director K, who directed the music video for the “Calm Down” remix, won best music video.

Burna Boy took Afrobeats single of the year and song of the year, both for “Last Last” as well as best R&B single for “For My Hand,” featuring Ed Sheeran.

Three artists won two awards each — Odumodublvck, Asake, Victony & Tempoe.

The eligibility period for the awards was January 2022 to March 2023.

Actor and host Terrence J. Nigerian and actress Osas Ighodaro hosted the show, which was streamed live on YouTube (U.S.) and HipTV (Africa) Network.

Bayanni, Khaid, Guchi, Bloody Civilian, Odumodublvck and Eltee Skhillz competed for rookie of the year. The winner, Odumodublvck, will receive not only glory, but also also a solar-powered, two-bedroom, fully furnished house.

Sean “Love” Combs was previously announced as the recipient of the international artiste recognition award. He was not present at the show, but organizers say his plaque will be delivered.

The Headies Awards, originally called the Hip Hop World Awards, were established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.

This marked the show’s second year at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. It was held in Lagos or Nigeria every year from 2006 to 2021 (except 2017 and 2020, when there was no ceremony).

In the past year, three major, all-genre music awards shows have introduced Afrobeats or African music categories. The American Music Awards were the first major music awards show to add such a category. They added favorite Afrobeats artist at the show that aired Nov. 20, 2022. Wizkid was the inaugural winner, beating Burna Boy, CKay, Fireboy DML and Tems.

The MTV Video Music Awards added a new category this year — best Afrobeats. The front-runner is Rema & Gomez’s “Calm Down,” which is nominated in two other categories, best song and best collaboration.

The Grammys added a similar category, best African music performance, this year (for the awards that will be presented on Feb. 4, 2024). Grammy nominations will be announced on Nov. 10.

Imagine being able to be the Governor of the state of California twice. For Jerry Brown, that’s exactly what happened.

First as a 36-year-old. And then at 72. A natural disrupter, Jerry Brown kickstarted the national debate about climate change and spiraling inequality back in the 1970s.

Jerry Brown with a young Marina Zenovich.

As the daughter of a politician — State Assemblyman and Senator and later Justice George N. Zenovich – I spent many summers in the Capitol building in Sacramento, watching politics unfold all around me. I’ve always wanted to make a film about Jerry Brown. I know him both as a political figure and as a layered, complex human. I want people to hear Jerry’s hard-won truths about politics and public life – and about where he thinks America is heading.

He’s lived through two very different political eras. He’s done deals in smoke-filled rooms and lived to see the age of 24/7 social media. Over the course of his career politics, culture and societal expectations have evolved far beyond what anyone could have imagined in 1975. After a lifetime mixed with successes and failures, reaching across the aisle and sometimes failing to find common ground, Governor Brown can offer a wisdom and a way forward in this tense political climate.

What lessons has Jerry learned in his 50 years in politics? Are there some character traits he just can’t change? Does he wish things could have unfolded differently? How far is he in competition with himself and how far with his father Pat Brown, who governed California during the 1960s?

My goal is to let audiences be inspired by the life and mind of Jerry Brown, a man ahead of his time and a leader for our times.

Marina Zenovich is the director of American Masters – Jerry Brown: The Disrupter.

A British policewoman who died following a reported accidental fall in Corfu may have unwittingly drunk alcohol laced with methanol, Greek cops fear.

The 22-year-old victim, who has not yet been named but worked for Surrey Police, was found with severe head injuries on a side street in Kavos in the early hours of Friday.

She had arrived on the island just hours before the fatal fall that saw her plunge from a height of several metres, reports the Sun.

The Briton had decided to stay out while her colleague went back to their hotel on Friday night. Greek authorities believe the fatal injuries she sustained outside a bar are compatible with an ‘accidental fall’.

But authorities on the Greek island are now investigating whether the victim had unwittingly drunk alcohol that had been laced with methanol, which is much more toxic than the ethanol found in regular alcoholic drinks.

A British policewoman has died following a reported accidental fall just hours after she arrived on the Greek island of Corfu on holiday (file image of Corfu Old Town)

Leading coroner Ioannis Aivatidis, who detected alcohol on the Briton’s breath, told the Sun: ‘There are questions as to what kind of alcohol she consumed. Had it been illicitly tampered with?

‘Was she so intoxicated because [illegal] methanol was in the alcoholic drinks she had consumed? The answer lies in the toxicology tests that will be carried out.’

In the hours after the police officer was found dead, authorities in Corfu announced that 28 bars would be shut down after they were found to be serving adulterated alcoholic drinks to customers.

Sources said that the closures were ‘more than coincidental’ given that they occurred following raids that were conducted shortly after the Briton was found dead.

Aivatidis told the Mirror there was no evidence the British police officer had been attack. Instead, he said that a postmortem examination had revealed she had fallen from a height of several metres.

Aivatidis told the Sun: ‘Findings included fractures to her thorax, stomach and a small rupture of the spleen. But it was a traumatic head injury that killed her.’

The coroner said the findings suggest there was no criminal involvement, which echoes the view of Greek police.

He said it was unclear whether the victim had been with her friends at the time of her accidental fall.

Aivatidis said: ‘I believe she may have confused the building she was staying in and may have fallen attempting to enter the one she was found outside of in an unorthodox manner.

‘What remains unclear and is now part of the [police probe] is whether she was abandoned by friends after the fall.’

Aivatidis said he would be carrying out further examinations of the 22-year-old’s body including toxicology tests today.

The victim was allegedly left bleeding on the street – possibly for hours – before she was found, according to Greek media.

The woman’s friends, who had travelled to Corfu on holiday with the victim, had told Corfu police that her phone was missing at some point during Friday night, suggesting that it might have been stolen.

But her mobile was found ‘nearby’, making the accidental manner of her death ‘now much more possible’, Aivatidis said. ‘But the autopsy will be definitive. It will rule out other possible scenarios.’

The victim’s stepfather, who is also a police officer, is expected to arrive on the island to repatriate the policewoman’s body back to the UK this week.

Meanwhile, Surrey Police said in a statement on Saturday: ‘Yesterday we were sadly made aware of the sudden death of a serving office whilst they were on holiday in Corfu, Greece.

‘We are working to support both their family and their colleagues here during this extremely difficult time.

‘An investigation into the circumstances of the death is being led by the Greek authorities and we await further updates from them as they conduct their enquiries.’

The Surrey Police Federation echoed these sentiments and said the police officer’s death was ‘devastating’.

It added: ‘The thoughts of all at Surrey Police Federation are with the officer’s family, friends and close colleagues at this time. Both the Federation and the force are supporting them.’

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office told MailOnline: ‘We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities’.

A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced to death the brother of an exiled dissident, convicting him of disloyalty to the kingdom’s rulers in a case built around anonymous social media accounts where he shared criticism of the government.

The defendant, Mohammed bin Nasser al-Ghamdi, a 54-year-old retired teacher, had almost no public profile before he was arrested last year and accused of treason. One of the main social media accounts cited in his court case, on the platform X — formerly known as Twitter — has eight followers.

The sentence, which was handed down in July, was also based on a confession attributed to Mr. al-Ghamdi after his arrest, in which he said he viewed the king and crown prince as “tyrants” and “agents of the West” who were fighting against Islam, according to court documents reviewed by The New York Times.

One possible explanation for his prosecution was offered by his elder brother, Saeed bin Nasser al-Ghamdi, a conservative Muslim cleric and vocal dissident who lives in exile in Britain. He said the authorities seemed to be using his younger brother to punish him.

“The posts that my brother wrote, no one knew about, and they didn’t spread — no one saw them even,” Saeed al-Ghamdi told The Times on Friday. “It appears to me they wanted to spite or harm or try to disturb me with this case.”

The case is part of a crackdown on dissent that has deepened under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 38, the kingdom’s de facto ruler.

Over the past eight years, the prince has rendered the once-ultraconservative country nearly unrecognizable, overseeing a plan to diversify its oil-dependent economy and ending a slew of religious and social restrictions that many Saudis found suffocating. At the same time, the modest space for political discourse has contracted.

Since 2017, the Saudi authorities have arrested hundreds of critics across the political spectrum, including religious clerics, Snapchat influencers, billionaires and several of the prince’s own cousins. The 2018 killing of Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist, by Saudi agents in Istanbul, which drew international outrage, was the most brazen example of the push. A former Saudi government insider, Mr. Khashoggi had fled the country and become an outspoken critic.

In recent years, harsher punishments than ever are being meted out to citizens who criticize their government, even as the accused have become less prominent.

After being detained, the younger Mr. al-Ghamdi confessed to holding religious and political beliefs that prosecutors portrayed as grave violations of the kingdom’s broadly worded counterterrorism law, according to the court documents. In the confession attributed to him after his arrest, he acknowledged that he was behind the anonymous social media accounts in question.

His lawyer denied the charges and said that his client “loved and was loyal to this nation,” according to the court documents. The lawyer argued that his client had neurological and psychiatric conditions that should void any statements attributed to him.

Despite that, a panel of judges sentenced Mr. al-Ghamdi to death, according to a copy of the ruling. The verdict is open to appeal.

The Saudi government’s Center for International Communication, which handles inquiries from the international news media, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But Saudi officials have argued that an iron fist is necessary to maintain control as Prince Mohammed oversees vast changes, like dismantling rules that yoked women to male guardians. In a 2018 interview, Prince Mohammed called the arrests a “small price” to “get rid of extremism and terrorism without civil war.”

Many of the religious figures imprisoned by the Saudi authorities hold similar views to the elder Mr. al-Ghamdi, who has criticized corruption and political repression while speaking out against elements of the social changes, including efforts to rewrite the Islamic studies curriculum in schools to remove content that the government designated as extremist.

Recently, he lambasted a performance in Riyadh by Iggy Azalea, the Australian musical artist, in which she accidentally split open her bodysuit while rapping the lyrics “Preaching about prophets/ it ain’t no one man can stop us/bow down to a goddess.”

“The perversion has reached extremes that are not possible to imagine,” the elder Mr. al-Ghamdi wrote on X.

Plenty of Saudis have celebrated the marginalization of such views under Prince Mohammed — arguing that ultraconservatives dominated the country for too long and smothered their personal freedoms. At the same time, many Saudis express concern about the speed of social changes and discomfort with what they view as the erosion of their country’s Islamic identity.

The prosecution’s case against the younger Mr. al-Ghamdi appeared to be built around anonymous accounts that he maintained on X and YouTube and his following and sharing posts from prominent Saudi dissidents.

In a handful of original posts, he criticized the Saudi royal family and other Arab leaders, saying that they were all “Zionists on the inside.” In a confession attributed to him by the prosecutors, he also indicated support for the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that the kingdom has designated as a terrorist organization, and said that the king and crown prince were “loyal to the infidels and agents of the Jews.”

The judges convicted him of charges including disloyalty to the kingdom’s rulers, “challenging the piety and justice of the king and crown prince” and “supporting terrorist ideology.”

Saudi officials sometimes argue that when they imprison religious conservatives, they are simply fighting the extremism that Western critics have long accused the kingdom of spreading.

“When they speak, you tell us they’re preaching hate,” Adel al-Jubeir, a senior government minister, said in an unusually candid lecture in 2018. “When we put them in jail, you tell us, ‘Why did you stop them from preaching? You took away their freedom of speech.’ It’s a ‘damned if we do, damned if we don’t’ situation.”

Rights groups say that the kingdom’s counterterrorism and anti-cybercrime laws are so broadly worded that they are wielded to silence many forms of peaceful dissent. Saudis imprisoned in recent years include leftist intellectuals, feminist activists and others who simply criticized government policies. Under Prince Mohammed, the rate of executions has also sharply increased, two rights groups wrote in a report this year.

The elder Mr. al-Ghamdi said he believed the authorities were trying to punish him through his brother’s case.

Under Prince Mohammed, the Saudi opposition in exile — once mainly Islamist in orientation — has grown increasingly diverse, vocal and well organized. The state has struggled to silence dissent abroad, sometimes turning to new tools.

Many exiles say that their family members back home are barred from traveling abroad. Others, like the elder Mr. al-Ghamdi, say they have faced pressure to return to the kingdom, where they fear they would face imminent arrest. He urged “all free people in the world” to try to save his brother and other prisoners in Saudi Arabia.

“My brother is unknown. He’s not famous. He used anonymous accounts to write posts, and his followers could have been counted on two hands,” he said. “But they arrested him and put him in solitary confinement for a period of almost four months.”

A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced

Donald Trump’s election interference trial in Georgia will appear live on TV and the court’s YouTube channel. Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee made the ruling on Thursday, which also says members of the press can use cellphones and computers inside the courtroom as long as they’re not recording, local news outlet WSB-TV reports.

“We have been livestreaming all of our major proceedings on a Fulton County-provided YouTube channel,” Judge McAfee said during the hearing, according to WSB-TV. “And our plan was to do that with this case as well. So there’s going to be a YouTube feed the entire time.”

However, there’s still a chance that Trump’s trial won’t occur from the Fulton County courtroom. Some of Trump’s co-defendants, including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, want to move their cases to federal court. If Trump takes a similar path and manages to move his trial to federal court, McAfee’s ruling won’t apply, as federal courts typically don’t allow cameras in the courtroom.

On Thursday, Trump pleaded not guilty to charges related to his alleged attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. He faces 13 felony counts in the state, including racketeering, making false statements, and conspiring to file false documents. Trump waived his right to appear at an arraignment that was set for September 6th.

The VMAs have always been a hotbed of controversy amidst celebrating music, and the 2015 edition was no exception. In the past, there have been iconic moments like Britney Spears, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera sharing a kiss, Lady Gaga turning heads with her meat dress, and the unforgettable 2009 clash between Kanye West and Taylor Swift. But 2015 was a year to remember, as it brought us a showdown of epic proportions: Nicki Minaj versus Miley Cyrus.

In 2015, when Minaj and Taylor Swift patched up their feud, things took a sour turn with Miley Cyrus. The rapper had previously addressed her issues with Cyrus, setting the record straight about their disagreements.

Why did Nicki Minaj call out Miley Cyrus?

The 2015 VMAs delivered an abundance of jaw-dropping moments, from Justin Bieber’s emotional return to Ye’s surprising presidential declaration. However, it was the onstage clash between Minaj and Cyrus that truly stole the spotlight. What unfolded when Minaj decided to call out Cyrus during her acceptance speech for ‘Anaconda’ was nothing short of an intense showdown. When pressed for an explanation, she expressed her disappointment over what she saw as a snub of  ‘Anaconda’ at the VMAs.

During an interview with the New York Times, Nicki Minaj passionately exclaimed, “You don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important?” As the host of the event, the feud between the ‘Flowers’ singer and Minaj became more public. Minaj did not mince words, going beyond the ‘Anaconda’ snub to express her offense at Cyrus altering her skin tone in place of Minaj’s face on the ‘Anaconda’ cover art. She saw this as a slight against Black women.

The feud that unfolded was quite the spectacle and eventually, roped in the ‘Lover’ singer, Swift, as well.

The whole VMA controversy- Minaj, Cyrus and Swift

Cyrus playfully inserted herself into Minaj’s ‘Anaconda’ cover art, photoshopping her face onto Minaj’s body and even adjusting the skin tone for a more “natural” look. Minaj responded with curiosity, wondering why Cyrus chose the image as her Twitter avatar. Cyrus did not stop there, creating another meme with herself as Hannah Montana in the ‘Anaconda’ context, but that time, Minaj’s response was less friendly.

The feud initially ignited when Minaj’s ‘Anaconda’ video wasn’t nominated for Video of the Year at the 2015 VMAs. She raised important questions about racial representation and body positivity in award nominations. This led to a Twitter exchange with Taylor Swift. Cyrus, as the VMAs host that year, chimed in, calling Minaj “not too kind“. Further, she even suggested jealousy as the cause of her dissatisfaction with the nominations. Ultimately, Swift won several awards, including Video of the Year for ‘Bad Blood.’

The VMAs have always been a hotbed

Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of the rock band Smash Mouth, which was best known for its ubiquitous 1999 hit “All Star,” died on Monday. He was 56.

His death, at his home in Boise, Idaho, was confirmed by the band’s manager, Robert Hayes, who said the cause was liver failure.

Smash Mouth was founded in 1994 in San Jose, Calif., and was made up of Harwell, the lead singer, Kevin Coleman on the drums, Greg Camp on the guitar, and Paul De Lisle on the bass. The band first broke out with their 1997 song “Walkin’ on the Sun,” which appeared on their debut album, “Fush Yu Mang.”

“‘Walkin’ on the Sun’ changed music. It changed the way people listen to music,” Harwell told Rolling Stone in 2019. “It was so different and it was so unusual, and it was so special. It just had that sound that we created. Ask anybody that’s tried to copy us, you can’t. You just can’t.”

The band enjoyed even greater success with the release of their next album, “Astro Lounge,” in 1999, and its chart-topping hit “All Star.” The song, which was nominated for a Grammy Award, also appeared in numerous films, and enjoyed newfound popularity two years later when it was featured in the opening credits of “Shrek,” the Academy Award-winning animated film about an ogre voiced by Mike Myers.

“We had no clue how big ‘Shrek’ was going to be,” Harwell said in the 2019 interview with Rolling Stone. (“All Star” also appeared on the soundtrack for the 1999 film “Mystery Men,” whose characters feature in the song’s music video.)

Since then, “All Star” has lived on, becoming a rich source for online parodies. Nearly 25 years later, the sound of Harwell’s voice is still linked to the song’s recognizable opening lines: “Somebody once told me / The world is gonna roll me / I ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed.”

“All Star” has close to a billion streams on Spotify. “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “I’m a Believer,” a cover of the Monkees song that also appeared on the “Shrek” soundtrack, have also garnered hundreds of millions of streams.

Harwell left the band in 2021 and retired from performing altogether after a live show in upstate New York during which he is seen slurring his words and using profanity. Earlier that year, Harwell had taken a break from live performing because of heart problems, according to several news media reports at the time.

Smash Mouth, which has had a rotating lineup over the years, has not released a new studio album in about a decade, but it has released new singles, including “Underground Sun” this year, with a different lead singer.

The band still performs — including a show scheduled for Saturday in Illinois — but it will forever be associated with “All Star,” something that Harwell was aware of.

“Nobody else could have sang that song.” Harwell told Rolling Stone in 2019. “It would have never been what it is now. I could’ve pitched that song to a million bands and they would have tried to do it, and it would’ve never been what it is.”

Here are three upcoming MCU movies that could bring back Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark aka Iron Man.

Downey Jr.’s Iron Man was the hero that started it all for the MCU in 2008, and since his story ended with his demise in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, fans have constantly been theorizing how the fan-favorite hero could return.

3 Movies Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Could Return In

1.) Armor Wars

Marvel

Don Cheadle’s War Machine solo movie, Armor Wars, will celebrate the legacy of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in a story that will see advanced Stark technology falling into the wrong hands and Rhodey tasked with getting it back.

The Iron Man spin-off was originally charted as a Disney+ series before catching an upgrade to a big-screen movie, leading many to speculate the change was made in order to facilitate Downey Jr.’s return.

As Armor Wars isn’t currently expected to involve the Multiverse or time travel, Iron Man probably won’t be making any form of present-day appearance here. But perhaps he could still appear as an A.I. voice or through a flashback.

However, as Marvel Studios will probably want to make a jaw-dropping event out of Iron Man’s return akin to that of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, these options generally feel rather improbable.

2.) Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

Avengers Kang Dynasty MCU
Marvel

The Multiverse Saga has put Variants and alternate universes at the center of it all, and all of that will begin to culminate with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. So, even with Earth-616’s Tony Stark now deceased, the crossover event will offer an opportunity to bring in a Variant of Robert Downey Jr.’s hero.

Some theorized Jonathan Majors’ Kang could form the Legion of the Unliving, as he has in Marvel Comics, to combat the Avengers. The team brings together heroes resurrected and pulled from various time periods to take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes while also messing with their heads.

But alas, it seems rather unlikely Tony Stark will make his way into Avengers 5, as the studio will probably want the founding Avenger to sit out at least one ensemble blockbuster before returning. This will allow The Kang Dynasty to keep its focus on uniting the new heroes before Secret Wars brings back familiar faces.

But if Downey Jr. were to serve as a major player in Secret Wars, perhaps he could pop up in a post-credits scene in The Kang Dynasty to confirm his return and get fans excited for what’s to come one year later.

Then again, with the MCU having seen some decline in interest and reputation in the post-Endgame world, Marvel Studios may feel the need to pull in its OG heroes for Avengers 5 if there are fears of whether the more recent characters won’t be able to carry an ensemble blockbuster on the same level.

3.) Avengers: Secret Wars

Avengers Secret Wars MCU
Marvel

Undeniably the most likely project for Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man to make his big comeback comes with 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, the culmination of the Multiverse Saga. By that point, eight years and one Avengers movie will have passed since his last appearance, allowing his return to feel properly earned.

Most are expecting Secret Wars to bring back many classic Marvel heroes from the old Fox universe to the MCU and hopefully a few Spider-Men. If the studio looking to deliver fan service on levels unheard of with Avengers 6, including Downey Jr.’s Iron Man is a no-brainer.

The essence of Secret Wars sees the heroes of different universes going head-to-head, and there may be no better way to take the MCU full circle than to have Earth-616’s Avengers face-off with an alternate team led by Iron Man.

It’s tough to know just how big a role Downey Jr. would even end up having in the next Avengers movies if he were to come back. Marvel Studios will obviously want the focus to remain on its current leading faces, and placing too much focus on nostalgia could ultimately risk distracting from meaningful character work.

Will Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Actually Ever Return?

Robert Downey Jr. has always had a “never say never” attitude to a potential MCU return, but it would require the right storyline. So the actor probably won’t be looking to come back just to appear as fan service but rather will want to see a storyline that justifies his inclusion in a meaningful way.

Whatever project it may come in, Downey Jr.’s role will likely end up being beyond a cameo in order to ensure his return feels earned and worthwhile. But fans shouldn’t expect to see Iron Man back to leading the Avengers or taking a starring role in any MCU movie as the time for that has passed.

Additionally, Iron Man’s comeback probably won’t be confirmed, at least officially, until whatever project it comes in ultimately releases. After all, Spider-Man: No Way Home proved even rumors of returning fan favorites will be enough to drive interest and box office – something the studio may look to replicate.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty hits theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow on May 7, 2027. Armor Wars has no official release date yet.

Production for the upcoming second season of House of the Dragon is drawing close to its final stages, and now, new set photos have surfaced, offering a glimpse into a battle scene that is currently being filmed. Set against the backdrop of the vast world of Westeros, House of the Dragon ventures back in time, around two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, to delve into the complex power dynamics within the Targaryen dynasty. Central to the series is the fiery struggle for succession that erupts following King Viserys I Targaryen’s rule. And things are going to get very fiery, indeed.

The set photos, recently revealed by Redanian Intelligence on X/Twitter, offers a glimpse into a sequence filmed in the Bourne Woods of Surrey. Per reports, this scene is the Battle at Rook’s Rest, a conflict detailed in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. In this battle, Ser Criston Cole leads an army to the castle of Rook’s Rest, pitting dragonriders and forces from opposing Targaryen factions against each other. Check out the images below.

What to Expect from House of the Dragon Season 2

HBO

In the upcoming season of House of the Dragon, viewers can anticipate a continuation from the intense season one finale. The accidental death of Lucerys Velaryon has set the stage for a gripping saga, acting as a pivotal moment that fuels Rhaenyra Targaryen’s quest for justice. As tensions escalate, the Greens resort to the age-old tactic of manipulating public opinion through propaganda. This calculated maneuver seeks to sway the masses, fortifying the Greens’ cause and paving the way for a conflict that transcends dragons.

A glimpse into the narrative has previously emerged on social media platforms (via Digital Spy), with behind-the-scenes images and footage capturing a funeral procession led by a solemn crier. The procession is accompanied by the resonating beat of a drum, while the crier’s voice echoes through the atmosphere as they recount the accomplishments of “Rhaenyra the Cruel.”

The show will deviate from its initial episode count, offering slightly fewer episodes compared to its debut season. Clare Kilner, the director of the series, recently shed light on this decision, revealing that the adjustment is a result of a creative decision made by showrunner Ryan Condal, who now shoulders the responsibilities alone after the departure of Miguel Sapochnik. This alteration in the episode count signifies a deliberate shift in storytelling approach, aiming to deliver a more concentrated and intensified narrative experience.

“There are eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour. Ryan’s decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they’re jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events.”

An official release date for the second season of House of the Dragon has not yet been revealed.

The queen of romantic comedies Meg Ryan is making her comeback. The actress rose to fame with successful blockbusters such as When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle.

After an eight-year break from acting, Ryan is returning to her roots with the upcoming film What Happens Later.  Ryan is also a co-writer and director for the flick, which features The X-Files star David Duchovny as her leading man.

Ryan and Duchovny play Willa and Bill, a former couple who reunite while stranded at the airport. The couple reconnects and slowly wonders what could’ve been, and if there’s hope for them.

The film based on Steven Dietz’s play Shooting Star is scheduled for release on October 13, 2023.

This is the first time Meg Ryan and David Duchovny have worked together

What Happens Later isn’t scheduled for release for another month, but already the film is generating buzz. A trailer for the rom-com gave fans a preview of Ryan and Duchovny’s chemistry, which has sparked plenty of excitement.

While Ryan was familiar with Duchovny’s work and met him on a few occasions, this is the first time the pair have worked together. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan praised her co-star as “funny, and he’s smart, and he’s dear and irresistible.”

When it came to storytelling, Ryan drew inspiration from her previous rom-com experience.

“These rom-comes work when the two characters are somehow opposites and yet have a rhythm of intellect and humor and dialogue and banter that sort of indicates their compatibility. So, it’s just been really fun to see David embrace this guy who I don’t think is anything really like David. Whereas the Willa thing I can relate to.”

Fans can see if Ryan and Duchovny create another rom-com classic when What Happens Later releases next month.

It might be too early to call it, but The Hollywood Reporter Roma may have given the best party of the 80th Venice Film Festival.

THR Roma, the first European edition of The Hollywood Reporter, threw a starry and glam but also surprisingly chill bash Sunday night at their festival villa, a stone’s throw from The Excelsior Hotel on the Lido. THR Roma had its official launch, in Rome, in April but the Venice bash marked its international coming out, and the group used the occasion to present its first stand-alone print edition (more on that later).

There were shades of Pablo Sorrentino’s famed party sequence in The Great Beauty as a who’s who of the Italian film and fashion industries — among them the cast of Venice festival opener Comandante, including Italian superstar Pierfrancesco Favino and director Edoardo De Angelis and Valentino’s creative director Pier Paolo Piccioli rubbed shoulders with the likes of Pricilla Presley and Sophia Coppola. Presley and Coppola were in Venice for the world premiere of Priscilla, the director’s adaptation of Presley’s 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me about her life with the King of Rock and Roll.

(from left) Priscilla Presley, Pier Paolo Piccioli and Sophia Coppola at the THR Roma Venice Film Festival party on Sept. 2, 2023.

The business side of the industry was well-represented by the top brass at indie production giant Fremantle, which was awarded the inaugural THR International Producers of the Year award Sunday night. Andrea Scrosati, Group COO and CEO of Continental Europe at Fremantle, and Christian Vesper, CEO of Global Drama, accepted the award from THR on behalf of the company, which in a few short years has gone from a producer of mainly non-scripted and entertainment television (X Factor, Got Talent) to become one of the largest financiers and distributors of indie art house movies. They’ve made most of their films through their boutique subsidiaries, including The Apartment, Italy’s Wildside and Ireland’s Element Pictures. In the last three years alone, Fremantle has made more than 60 films, including five in Venice competition this year. Alongside Priscilla and Adagio, the group is represented by Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, starring Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo — arguably the hit of the 80th Biennale — Pietro Castellitto’s Enea and Saverio Costanzo’s Finally Dawn. Several other Fremantle execs were spotted at the THR Venice bash, including CEO, International Jens Richter and CEO, Southern Europe Jaime Ondarza.

Lorenzo Mieli, head of Italian shingle The Apartment and a one-man production whirlwind, was also seen mingling among the raucous crowd. Mieli is in Venice with Priscilla, which he co-produced, and Stefano Sollima’s Italian crime noir Adagio, also in competition. His upcoming slate includes Angelina Jolie’s feature Without Blood, also starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novel, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey.

The high point of the evening came when THR Roma’s editor-in-chief, Concita De Gregorio, dressed to dazzle in a shocking hot pink number from Valentino, presented the publication’s first-ever stand-alone print magazine. The glossy collector’s edition, headlined “The Lido of Dreams” features interviews with Sophia and Francis Ford Coppola, Luca Guadagnino, Susan Sarandon, Ari Aster, Oliver Stone, Sophie Loren and Dario and Asia Argento, among others. It also includes profiles of Venice legends from Harry’s Bar owner Arriso Cipriani to Rene Caovilla, designer of the high-heeled masterpieces that have graced the Lido red carpet on the feet of Rihanna, Julia Roberts, Sharon Stone and many more.

Valentino’s creative director Pier Paolo Piccioli designed the magazine cover, which shows the legendary, spectacularly mustachioed Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí reclining in a gondola in Venice’s Grand Canal, apparently lost in a dream. Piccioli used watercolors to paint, in his signature pink, a carnivalesque mask over Dalí’s face.

You can read the entire THR Roma Venice magazine online, in English, here.

Starz has lowered its annual subscription price from $74.99 a year to $69.99, Cord Cutters first reported and TechCrunch later confirmed. Starz emailed its subscribers the news on August 29th, explaining existing members will see the change in price on their next bill.

It’s not clear why Starz, which is home to TV shows like Outlander, The Serpent Queen, and Minx, made the move, but it’s a welcome one. Alison Hoffman, president of domestic networks at Starz, only told TechCrunch via email that “as one of the few streaming networks that is profitable, we are always looking for ways to drive success for the business while providing great value to our customers.”

“Our annual plan subscribers are some of our most valuable customers, so we wanted to find ways to drive more people into the plan and reward our existing customers,” added Hoffman.

It’s a surprising twist given many of Starz’s rivals are increasing prices. Disney, for example, recently announced it’ll be increasing the prices of its monthly ad-free Disney Plus and Hulu plans starting on October 12th. Meanwhile, Paramount Plus increased the price of its monthly plan back in late June.

Starz itself increased monthly subscription costs from $8.99 to $9.99 just a few months ago. You could read that change as part of a greater strategy to entice customers into paying more upfront for the annual plan. Regardless of why the annual plan is cheaper, if you’re the type to set up a subscription and forget about it for a few years, this is a win.

Netflix has unveiled a swathe of South African content including the first feature from Mandla Dube’s high-profile talent deal and a rom-com titled Soweto Love Story.

During a See What’s Next panel at Mip Africa today, the streamer reiterated a commitment to the nation and talked up a wealth of recently-struck partnerships, with Netflix Middle East and Africa content boss Ben Amadasun saying the investments will “enable us to uncover unique perspectives and diverse stories from South Africa to entertain our more than 238 million members [subscribers] around the world.”

Leading the slate is Heart of the Hunter, the first fruits of Netflix’s three-picture deal with South African Silverton Siege filmmaker Dube, which will launch next year. The feature is described as a twisty spy thriller based on the novel by Deon Meyer. Netflix revealed its Dube tie-up last year at an event in Johannesburg, while it also has deals in place with the likes of Mo Abudu and her Ebonylife Studios and director Kunle Afolayan.

Also launching next year is Soweto Love Story, a rom-com set in the heart of Johannesburg’s famous township.

Meanwhile, YA series Miseducation will drop on Netflix in a fortnight and follows a young, self-absorbed, first-year varsity student who finds herself on the canceled list after the police raid her house and seize her family’s assets because of her mother, while YOH’ Christmas is Netflix Africa’s first show about the holiday season.

Amadasun also unveiled new seasons of Blood & Water, Savage Beauty and Young, Famous & African along with talking up previously-announced feature Kandasamys: The Baby.

He detailed the Dube deal and pointed to other local partnerships including a multi-title book adaptation tie-up with Akin Omotoso and Ochre Media, a deal with director Donovan Marsh and a multi-title partnership with Gambit Films, amongst others.

“We are incredibly excited to continue with our investment in South African storytelling and to expand our relationships with these amazing storytellers,” added Amadasun.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made night one of Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour stop in Los Angeles a cozy date night!

On Friday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were amongst the star-studded guests who attended Queen Bey’s show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The pair were joined by Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, and Meghan’s best friend and former Suits co-star, Abigail Spencer as they sat (and danced) in one of the VIP boxes.

For the occasion, the pair followed Bey’s instructions as they pulled out their silver outfits. Meghan, 42, wore a white top and a silver bodycon skirt adorned with sequins. For his part, Harry, 38, wore a pair of white pants and a grey blazer — keeping as close as possible to the color scheme.

In videos captured by eyewitnesses, Meghan and Harry were close as they danced to “1+1,” and ‘Love on Top.” While the former actress had a moment with her ladies while dancing to “Diva.” Still, the star of the show was Meghan’s mother Doria, who was on her feet singing and dancing for the duration of the concert.

In one video, Harry was seen getting to his feet and joining his wife to dance when Bey started performing “Cuff It.”

According to an eyewitness, the duke was “sweet” to his wife during their outing.

“Prince Harry was being so sweet with Meghan Markle in such a gentle way. They definitely showed PDA kissed, hugged and slow danced,” the eyewitness recounted. “Meghan looked so relaxed free and just in her own skin.”

At one point, the eyewitness says that the pair appeared to be on a FaceTime call with who they believed to be their children, Archie, 4, and Lilibet, 2, as they were seen making funny faces.

The eyewitness added, “Meghan’s mom Doria stole the show. She out danced everyone. There wasn’t a moment she wasn’t living her best life at that concert. Prince Harry was being funny with her as well. It seemed they’ve built a tight knit family where everyone just felt safe to be themselves and it was touching.”

Friday night’s sold-out concert drew a horde of A-listers who couldn’t contain their excitement and documented their experience on social media. From Tracee Ellis Ross, Gabrielle Union and Sarah Paulson to Issa Rae, Chance the Rapper, Robin Thicke and Kelly Rowland, everyone had blast experiencing one of this generation’s best performers.

Bey’s performance was so captivating, a group that included Jay-Z, Kris Jenner and Offset busted out the electric slide on the dance floor!

Bey will officially celebrate her 42nd birthday and Virgo season on Monday, as she performs her final night at SoFi stadium.

This isn’t the first concert Meghan has attended this summer. In August — following her birthday — ET confirmed that she attended Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour at SoFi Stadium.

While the pair have kept it low-key during the summer, ET confirmed that later this month, Harry and Meghan will travel to Düsseldorf, Germany, for this year’s Invictus Games.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made night

Netflix has teased a storyline from the sixth and final season of its hit drama series “The Crown.”

The show, which first launched in 2016, follows the trials and tribulations of the British Royal Family, beginning with the death of King George VI and the succession of his daughter, Queen Elizabeth, to the throne.

The final season, set to air later this year, is believed to cover the death of Princess Diana and, Netflix has revealed, will also feature a royal wedding.

It won’t be Prince William or Prince Harry’s royal wedding covered by the series, however. According to the snap tweeted by Netflix’s Twitter account earlier today, viewers will get to see Prince Charles’s wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles, which took place in 2005 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

In the show, Prince Charles is played by Dominic West while Olivia Williams plays Camilla.

Charles’s mother Queen Elizabeth II was said to have initially disproved of the relationship, partly because her son’s affair with Parker-Bowles had brought the family into disrepute, and reportedly left the wedding celebration to watch horse racing in another room. Charles’s first wife, Diana, famously told an interviewer there were “three people” in her marriage, a reference to Parker-Bowles, a comment that caused uproar at the time.

After Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris in 1997 Charles continued the relationship with Parker-Bowles, increasingly edging out into the open. It resulted in some of the lowest ebbs in his popularity with the British public. Increasingly, however, Parker-Bowles began to be accepted as the heir to the throne’s partner and eventually the two married in a civil ceremony in 2005.

However, Charles’s son Prince Harry revealed earlier this year in his shocking memoir “Spare” that he and his brother Prince William had begged their father not to re-marry.

“Despite Willy and me urging him not to, Pa was going ahead,” Harry wrote in the book. “We pumped his hand, wished him well. No hard feelings. We recognized that he was finally going to be with the woman he loved, the woman he’d always loved.”

According to Claudia Harrison, who plays Princess Anne in Seasons 5 and 6 of “The Crown,” the wedding was the final scene the cast shot. It was filmed at York Minster Cathedral in England with the entire family in attendance, including Imelda Staunton, who plays the Queen in the final two seasons of the show, Jonathan Pryce as her husband Prince Phillip plus Ed McVey as Prince William and Luther Ford as Prince Harry.

American sports gear giant Topgolf Callaway suffered a data breach last month that exposed sensitive data belonging to more than a million customers.

The company sent a notification email to the victims last week, explaining what had happened and what the company was doing about it.

In the email, it was said that an unknown malicious third party made its way into the company’s systems on August 1, in an event that affected the availability of some of its e-commerce services. Furthermore, the attackers stole sensitive user data including full names, shipping addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, order histories, account passwords, and answers to security questions. Payment information, government ID information, or Social Security Numbers (SSN), were not taken, the notice reads.

Forced password reset

The incident affected not just Callaway, but a couple of other brands under its umbrella, such as Odyssey, Ogio, and Callaway Gold Preowned. A total of 1,114,954 individuals were affected by the breach.

Due to the fact that the attackers took passwords and answers to security questions, Callaway reset everyone’s login credentials and forced users to set up a new password on next login.

Callaway specializes in golf gear such as clubs, balls, gloves, caps, balls, and more, BleepingComputer reported. The company services more than 70 countries around the world, and counts some 25,000 employees. Its annual revenue exceeds $1.2 billion.

We don’t know if the incident is a ransomware attack, but given that some of the company’s e-commerce services were affected, it is a strong possibility. Yet, no ransomware groups have yet taken responsibility for the attack, or tried to sell the database on the dark web. Still, the data taken can be used in identity theft and phishing attacks, so it’s unlikely it won’t surface somewhere on the dark web.

EXCLUSIVE: Deadline can reveal a teaser for German director Timm Kröger’s black-and-white drama The Theory Of Everything, set against the backdrop of a 1960s physics congress in the Swiss Alps, ahead of its world premiere in Competition in Venice on Saturday.

German actor Jan Bülow plays a physic Ph.D student who travels to the conference with his doctoral advisor (Hanns Zischler) to listen to an Iranian scientist talk about a ground-breaking theory of quantum mechanics.

The meeting takes a strange turn-of-events when the guest speaker fails to materialize, and a German physicist attending the meeting is found dead.

The film marks the directorial feature debut of Kröger, who is also a cinematographer with credits including The Council Of Birds.

“This film began – it has become a cliché to say – as a dream; a strange yet uncannily familiar mountainscape, a physicist’s congress that, of course, never seems to take place, and a love story engulfed by an amorphous «conspiracy» that remains opaque to the end,” he says in a director’s statement.

“This film is supposed to feel like a dream; one that is allowed to be as strange as it is entertaining, and which also repeatedly recurs to a cinema of yesteryear – or rather: to an amalgamated memory-image of cinema, sort of as if Hitchcock and Lynch (and countless others, known or forgotten) made love on the carpet of an old hotel lobby.”

The German-Austrian-Swiss co-production is produced by Heino Deckert and Tina Börner at MA.JA.DE and Viktoria Stolpe and Kröger, under the banner of their company The Barricades.

Co-producers are Austria’s Panama Film and Switzerland’s Catpics.

Charades is handling international sales and Anonymous Content is overseeing North America.

Here Are The Best And Worst TV

In Eiichiro Oda‘s wildly imaginative, charmingly goofy and sprawling world of “One Piece,” combat is about more than just beating enemies to a pulp.

For the Straw Hat pirates — the rookie crew at the center of the manga series-turned-anime — heated moments with the corrupt World Government or big wig pirates are chances to use their powers toward grand ambitions.

Monkey D. Luffy whips out elastic attacks and battle stances (“gears”) to liberate long-oppressed communities across the seas and skies to become King of the Pirates. Sharpshooter Usopp tests out wacky slingshot ammo against daunting enemies like fishmen and man-eating plants to prove himself a brave warrior of the seas.

Fights are often whimsical but are the rewarding culmination of tear-jerking backstories and intricately planned world-building. Since the “One Piece” manga first released in 1997, Oda’s synthesis of action and emotion have endeared and awed generations of loyal fans. Now, the live-action series released by Netflix on Thursday tries to replicate some of the battles. The series was written by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, who also serve as showrunners and executive producers. (Oda is also an executive producer, along with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements.)

Monkey D. Luffy in Toei Animation’s “One Piece” anime series.

(One Piece Series)

“[‘One Piece’] is one of those things so many people have invested so much of their life into,” said visual effects supervisor Victor Scalise. “We want to make sure that the fans are going to say, ‘OK, you guys tried to stay true to the universe as much as you can.’”

Whether it was the sweeping courtyard scene that introduces the first Straw Hats or the dramatic ruin of Arlong Park, the visual effects and stunt teams behind Netflix’s live action series worked closely to adapt the spirit of “One Piece” combat. Here’s how some of these essential Straw Hat fight scenes came together.

The (almost) Straw Hats vs. Capt. “Axe-Hand” Morgan!

A near five-minute stretch of high-energy acrobatics and over-the-top swordplay, the sandy courtyard fight in Episode 1 sets the tone for “One Piece” in more ways than one.

“We wanted to land for the audience that we weren’t pulling back on the action,” said Marc Jobst, who directed the episode. “Actually, we were going to go into it big time, and we were going to give it a different feel.”

After stealing the coveted map to the Grand Line, Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and Nami (Emily Rudd) crash-land into a courtyard where a swarm of Capt. “Axe-Hand” Morgan’s (Langley Kirkwood) subordinates rush to capture them. For Jobst, this marks the start of a three-act arc that introduces the Straw Hats’ styles and brings them together as a team — whether they like it or not.

A man wearing a headwrap, white shirt and pants swings swords with his hands and mouth as a blond man in a vest falls.

Mackenyu Arata as Roronoa Zoro fighting Langley Kirkwood as Capt. Morgan in Episode 1 of Netflix’s “One Piece.”

(Netflix)

The courtyard scene was filmed over four days in 90-degree heat on a dirt lot in South Africa, said stunt coordinator Franz Spilhaus. The set-up included at least 40 stunt performers in Marine uniforms, wires, rigs and a camera operator closely tracking punches and kicks.

“It was a very big dance … like a ballet,” Spilhaus said. Between Luffy barely missing a Marine’s sword or Nami lifting her bo staff in time to take out two foes at once, the courtyard scene has similar timing and rhythm of a dance.

Jobst said it was essential for the stars to be physically strong and present in most of the combat scenes so that they wouldn’t have to rely as heavily on stunt doubles and visual effects. Godoy, Rudd and Zoro actor Mackenyu each came to the project with different degrees of physical abilities but underwent additional training to suit their characters’ needs.

“We didn’t want to always bring [Luffy’s] rubber skills out. We wanted to make [Godoy] feel like he’s rubber by doing gymnastics, so you still get this emotional feeling of this guy who can just dance around wherever he wants,” Spilhaus added.

Just when Nami and Luffy are struggling to hold their own, Zoro takes out Marines by sliding on his knees and swinging two katanas. It’s a moment that leans into the camp of anime moves, and Spilhaus said the entrance was inspired by similar stunts from the 2022 Indian action film “Shamshera,” on which he served as action director.

In the second half of the courtyard scene, Luffy and Zoro’s abilities are front and center. They perform their signature moves, seemingly ripped from pages of the manga. It required months of preparation, numerous conversations and a close rapport between the stunts and visual effects teams.

Re-creating Zoro’s iconic three-sword style — where he wields a third blade in his mouth — also required the guidance and expertise of Koji Kawamoto. The katana specialist said that Mackenyu (who is the son of late martial arts star and “Kill Bill” actor Sonny Chiba) worked his way from wielding one, to two, to three katanas. Each blade had its own choreography, Kawamoto said. Behind the scenes, Zoro’s mouth katana had a lightweight handle and a thin wire tipped with a blue Nerf foam bullet.

“If the katana is too heavy, it will wobble, and it might be a little bit dangerous,” Kawamoto said. “We had the CG team work their magic on that.”

For the “gum-gum” abilities Luffy gained from eating a rare power-granting Devil Fruit, which help his body stretch like rubber, it took Scalise, visual effects producer Scott Ramsey and their various vendors more than a year to perfect. “It’s a signature effect in all of the show, so it had to be right,” Ramsey said.

Luffy’s gum-gum attacks — which he proudly calls out like in the anime — constantly evolved during the production. At first, Luffy’s movements were too solid and stiff to belong to a rubber human, Scalise said. After months of experimenting, Luffy’s elastic limbs started to come together when artists from FrameStore, a visual effects vendor, added more bend, weight and movement to a three-dimensional model, Scalise said.

Godoy’s body performance helped sell Luffy’s abilities too.

The combat sequence is also one of the most brightly lighted of the series, which allowed Scalise and Ramsey’s teams to nail down how Luffy’s powers would look in a real-world environment.

“If you can make it work in bright daylight, you’re probably in good shape everywhere else,” Scalise said.

The Straw Hats vs. Capt. Buggy’s ‘chop-chop’ fruit!

Like the budding Straw Hat crew, the “One Piece” team found victory and confidence in the Shells Town courtyard. Then came Buggy the Clown.

Self-centered, sadistic and unlike most normal circus clowns, Buggy (Jeff Ward) is also a Devil Fruit eater whose power allows him to disassemble and reassemble body parts on command. For Jobst, the big circus tent fight in Episode 2 “was a completely different beast” that required a variety of practical and technological approaches.

To capture the chaotic tornado of Buggy’s body parts, “One Piece” relied on fake limbs on sticks, wire work, a mechanism that would help Ward float and a sleeve used to mimic the pirate’s disembodied hand.

“It was really important to sell that [the limbs were] coming from all directions — different heights and different places, so it didn’t feel like all we’ve done is dress somebody up in a green suit,” Jobst said.

The physicality and effect of Buggy’s attacks were necessary to make the scene work, he added. They had the limbs on a stick hit Godoy, and Rudd also struck rogue prop limbs with her staff.

“If you don’t get those things right, it looks … cheap, so it was really important we got the physicality,” Jobst said.

From the visual effects side, Scalise said Buggy’s combat needed pages of documents tracking limb placements, a convincing physical performance from Ward and a little bit of sneakiness. He said that the episode features discreet duplicates of certain body parts — like calves and shins — to add more movement to Buggy’s power.

Scalise also said that the team worked to add personality to Buggy’s various body parts. As Buggy became more sadistic, his limbs were more aggressive with Nami and Zoro.

“There’s a lot of planned chaos that we put into the parts to help enhance the scene,” he said.

The Straw Hats vs. the Arlong Pirates! The fall of Arlong Park!

The Straw Hats’ resolve and strength are put to the test when they face feared fishman Arlong and his pirate crew in order to free Nami and her beloved hometown from his clutches. There’s fishman karate and new gum-gum attacks, but those weren’t the only focus for director Josef Wladyka.

“I was always looking to make sure we were not missing an emotional beat or a beat that doesn’t have anything to do with the crazy wire action,” he said.

Before filming, Wladyka said he worked with Owens, Maeda, cinematographer Trevor Michael Brown, storyboard artists and Spilhaus’ team to map out how the battles would look and feel. When it was time to capture the Straw Hats’ attack on Arlong Park on camera, nine cranes were used for the complex wiring, and dozens of stunt performers in different versions of fishmen prosthetics also came into the mix.

During the production of “One Piece,” Oda shared his opinions on what worked and what didn’t. The initial take on fishman karate — the humanoid beings’ combat style — fell into the latter, Scalise said.

At first, stingray Kuroobi (Jandre Le Roux) skipped over rocks in the pool to reach Zoro and newcomer Sanji (Taz Skylar). After hearing back from Oda, Scalise and Ramsey’s teams created a computer-generated clip of the fishman torpedoing through the water.

Inside the map room, which was built early in the production, Arlong (McKinley Belcher III) and Luffy engage in a desperate battle that replicates memorable panels from the manga and anime. “This is a crescendo, and we wanted to really pay homage to the material,” said Spilhaus.

Usual stunt mechanisms like rigs and wiring, and an intimidating physical performance from Belcher (who leaned into his boxing experience), were essential to the one-on-one, Spilhaus said. So were plaster of Paris and foam blocks that could easily crumble with Godoy’s punches.

“Real is better, as we always say,” he added.

The fight for Nami’s freedom and Cocoyashi Village ends with four words: “Gum-gum battle ax!”

Luffy vs. Arlong in Toei Animation’s “One Piece” anime series.

(One Piece Series)

The first version of the pivotal moment — a profile shot — wasn’t as destructive. Underwhelmed with the early renditions, Scalise said the visual effects team worked with Goodbye Kansas Studios to create a more dramatic shot that connects the top-down shot of Luffy’s final move to Arlong.

“You’re trying to tell the story of Luffy defeating Arlong, but also this story of Luffy wanting to destroy this place because it was Nami’s prison,” he said. “The pagoda itself is kind of a character in this whole piece.”

After the updated concept was presented to the showrunners and producers, Netflix allowed more money to go into the improved ending blow. “This is a big show; we need this ending to have this destruction,” Ramsey said.

The death of Tony Stark at the end of Avengers: Endgame is the pivotal moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Not only did Iron Man’s historic sacrifice bring half the universe’s population back, but it also ushered in a new era of heroes.

For some, Marvel can be broken down into a pre-Endgame and post-Endgame era, and debates rage online about whether or not the quality of Marvel’s releases has deteriorated since the blockbuster film’s release.

For one actress, however, the death of Tony Stark meant something more personal- the end of her MCU career.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s MCU Journey

Throughout her history in the MCU, Gwyneth Paltrow portrayed Pepper Potts in six different films.

The eventual wife of Tony Stark and the head of Stark Industries, Potts eventually would don Iron Man armor herself and do battle with Thanos.

Since the events of Endgame, however, Potts has not appeared again. This has led many to speculate, or perhaps pester Paltrow with questions about her MCU future.

Why Hasn’t Pepper Potts Returned?

During a Q & A that the actress hosted on her personal Instagram story, Paltrow was asked by a fan why she had stopped appearing in recent MCU projects.

While seemingly indicating that she would be open to returning, Paltrow had a fairly simple answer “Because Iron Man died”.

“Oh my god, stop yelling at me! We just stopped doing it because Iron Man died, and why do you need Pepper Potts without Iron Man? I don’t know, call up Marvel and yell at them, not me. I’m just sitting here.”

While Potts’ character was developed enough that she could easily appear in her own right, the current multiverse saga that Marvel is exploring doesn’t necessarily lend itself to her character.

Hopefully, however, the story of Pepper Potts has not been finished yet.

The death of Tony

On the surface, it doesn’t seem like DC Comics’ Green Lantern mythology and the Star Wars saga have a ton in common, aside from both being space opera adventures. But upon closer inspection, both of these franchises have had incredible parallels, going back to their very beginnings. Was George Lucas influenced by Green Lantern comics when creating the Jedi, or coming up with Anakin Skywalker’s arc? Honestly, we’d say probably not. But nevertheless, the similarities are striking, And it’s been an ongoing thing for decades.

DC Comics/Lucasfilm

The Green Lantern Corps and the Jedi Order

DC Comics' Green Lantern Corps, and the Jedi Order in the days of the High Republic in Star Wars.
DC Comics/Lucasfilm

In DC Comics lore, the Green Lantern Corps has been a peacekeeping force for literally hundreds of thousands of years. With their emerald power rings, they can channel energy from the Emotional Spectrum because of their innate willpower to create constructs and energy weapons. They draw their power from an energy that has existed since the dawn of creation. Also, they are usually paired with another Lantern, in a senior officer and rookie partnership. Every time they charge their rings, they take a solemn vow to the Corps, in the form of a spoken oath.

In Star Wars, the Jedi Order has also existed for thousands of generations, with a select few thousand acting as guardians of the peace for trillions of beings. Only a very select handful of sentient beings who can wield the Force had have allowance to train as Jedi. Similarly, potential Green Lanterns must be innately special for the ring to choose them. And not every sentient being can wield a ring, just as not every sentient being has an aptitude for the Force. Like the Lanterns, after initial training, they pair Jedi in a master/apprentice relationship. And like the Green Lanterns, they must also take a vow to the order. Of course, one of their own once decimated both the Lanterns and the Jedi Order, only for them to rebuild again.

Oa and Coruscant, the Bright Centers of the Galaxy

Oa, the DC Universe's home of the Green Lantern Corps, and Coruscant, the center of the Star Wars galaxy.
DC Comics/Lucasfilm

The home world of the Green Lantern Corps is the ancient planet Oa, the center of the known universe. There, the immortal Guardians of the Universe preside over their intergalactic representatives and issue orders to their Green Lanterns. Oa, in more recent comics, has also become the home of the United Planets, an intergalactic governing body. At the center of the Star Wars galaxy is Coruscant, which is home to the Jedi Temple and has been for centuries. The same Temple where the Jedi Council presides over its thousands of Jedi Knights, in a similar manner to Oa’s Guardians. Like Oa, Coruscant is also the seat of galactic government, first with the Republic, and later, the Empire.

The Fall of Hal Jordan, the Fall of Anakin Skywalker

Green Lantern Hal Jordan goes bad and become the villainous Parallax, in 1994's DC Comics story Emerald Twilight.
DC Comics

The Star Wars saga centered on the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker. But we didn’t see his actual transition into Darth Vader until the prequels. But the Green Lantern comics gave their premiere ring wielder, Hal Jordan, almost the same arc as Anakin would have, over a decade earlier. The Guardians of the Universe considered Hal Jordan to be the greatest Green Lantern of all time, a gifted pilot even before he received the power ring. Eventually, though, things went very sour.

When an alien despot destroyed his hometown of Coast City, killing millions, Hal suffered an unbearable loss. And he wanted more power from the Green Lantern central battery to undo it all. When the Guardians denied him, telling him he must accept loss, he went on a rampage and killed almost the entire Green Lantern Corps. He siphoned all the power from the main battery on Oa, emerging as the villain Parallax. After a few years as a bad guy, he ultimately redeemed himself, and died saving the Earth during the Final Night event, reigniting a dying sun.

Anakin Skywalker as he enters the Jedi Temple to execute Order 66 in Revenge of the Sith, and his alter ego Darth Vader in Rogue One.
Lucasfilm

Sound familiar? Anakin Skywalker was already a great pilot when he became Jedi, and as the Chosen One, many considered him the most powerful Jedi ever. When he was asked to let go of loss by wiser Jedi, he decided he couldn’t, and needed more power to save his wife from death. He kills all the Jedi in their temple, and becomes Darth Vader. As we know, in his final act in Return of the Jedi, he ultimately redeemed himself. Of course, Hal Jordan’s dark side turn was later retconned as a possession. And Hal got to come back to life with a clean slate. But for over a decade, Hal Jordan was DC’s Anakin Skywalker analogue.

The “Last” Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner, and the “Last” Jedi, Luke Skywalker

Kyle Rayner, the Last Green Lantern, and Luke Skywalker in A New Hope, the Last Jedi.
DC Comics/Lucasfilm

When the Jedi Order fell, eventually one farm boy named Luke Skywalker picked up a lightsaber and embarked on a journey that would make him the last Jedi. But Luke Skywalker’s world-famous story was somewhat reflected in the Green Lantern comics of the early ‘90s, when a new, younger Lantern named Kyle Rayner became to the Green Lantern Corps what Luke Skywalker was to the Jedi Order — the last of his kind. Or, depending on your point of view, the first of a new kind of Jedi.

When Hal Jordan broke bad and destroyed the Corps, only one ring remained. The last Guardian went to Earth and gave the final power ring to a young slacker named Kyle Rayner. He became the “Torchbearer” for the whole Lantern Corps, the only Lantern left, much like how for years Luke was the last Jedi. Kyle even spent some time under the mentorship of former Lantern John Stewart, in an Obi-Wan/Luke-style relationship. He eventually reignited the Green Lantern Corps again after a decade. And he had an epic battle with Hal Jordan, who became his nemesis, much as Luke did with Vader. And thanks to some time-traveling adventures, Hal became like a father figure to Kyle, completing the Luke/Vader parallels.

Multi-Colored Power Rings, Multi-Colored Lightsabers

The multi-colored power rings in the DC Universe, and the multi-colored lightsabers of the Star Wars galaxy.
DC Comics/Lucasfilm

In the Green Lantern mythology, each color ring represents a different aspect of the Emotional Spectrum. Green is willpower/courage, while blue is hope, purple is love, and indigo is compassion. All of these same colors represent the lightsaber hues of members of the benevolent Jedi Order. And these are all emotions and attributes a Jedi must display. Of course, in the DC Universe, the different colored rings each have a separate corps of their own. And there is only one Jedi Order in Star Wars. But their colors match the “good guy” rings in the pages of DC Comics.

Meanwhile, the emotion of rage fuels the Red Lantern rings. In Star Wars, only a Sith wields crimson blades. But the emotion of rage powers both the Red Lanterns and the Sith. In the Green Lantern comics, greed fuels the orange power rings. In Star Wars: Ahsoka, we see our first orange lightsabers, held by mercenaries who were former Jedi. As mercenaries, they’re in it for the money, so we’d say orange sabers represent greed as well. In both DC and Star Wars, white and black power rings/lightsabers are coveted and rare, worn by few (or one). The only colored lightsaber that’s doesn’t really line up with a corresponding power ring is yellow. In Green Lantern comics, yellow represents fear. In Star Wars, Jedi Temple guards hold yellow sabers, as does Rey eventually.

Will we see more Green Lantern and Star Wars parallels in the future? If the past several decades have been any indication, we think the answer is a definite yes. In the comics, we’ve seen Green Lantern and Star Trek crossover. Here’s hoping we see some power rings ignite next to some lightsabers. How fun would that be?

The ad-free tier addresses European Union (EU) regulations that have diminished some of Meta’s most lucrative data-collection methods, but, the NYT says, the company would continue offering free ad-supported versions of Facebook and Instagram in the EU. So, is this a cost-saving move? Would ad-free sites affect the company’s bottom line? Back in April, Meta said that advertising in the EU made up 10 percent of the company’s total revenue.

The EU fined Meta €1.2 billion in May for moving EU citizen’s data to US-based servers. In addition, the company was fined €265 million in 2022 for failing to prevent millions of Facebook users’ mobile numbers (and other data) from being scraped and posted online.

I truly hate to be the bearer of this news, but Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are reportedly in the beginning stages of ending their marriage.

TMZ first reported the couple’s impending divorce on September 3. According to the tabloid, the 34-year-old pop star had his team “consult” with two LA-based divorce lawyers with the intention of filing for divorce from the 27-year-old Game of Thrones star after six months of “serious problems.”

The A-list couple first wed in May 2019 and welcomed their first child, Willa, in 2020. In 2022, the Jonas trio became a family of four with the addition of their second daughter, whose name has yet to be shared publicly. According to sources that spoke to TMZ, Jonas has been taking care of the kids “pretty much all of the time” over the past three months, even as the Jonas Brothers embarked on their current tour. Turner is currently filming a project in the UK.

Hours later, a source told People that Jonas had retained a divorce lawyer. Turner declined People’s request for comment, while Jonas’ team has not yet responded.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have always been known as a solid, yet lowkey couple. The pair eloped in Las Vegas in 2019 before repeating their vows during a more traditional wedding in France. Just three years later, the actor announced her second pregnancy by simply showing up to the 2022 Met Gala on May 2. “It’s what life is about for me—raising the next generation,” Turner told Elle U.K. in an interview published a few days later. “The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength. We’re so excited to be expanding the family. It’s the best blessing ever.”

As you read this, new titles from filmmakers of Tunisian, Moroccan and Franco-Palestinian-Algerian heritage are making their mark at the Venice Film Festival, while Toronto Film Festival will premiere a trio of first features from Saudi Arabia, along with discoveries from the UAE and Palestine, plus a handful of Arab titles screened at Cannes and Venice. Those in the know say that the annual number of Arab films produced has increased along with the emergence of new filmmakers, and that fall festivals such as El Gouna, Marrakech, Cairo and Red Sea will be chockablock with fresh regional titles.

Last year, Venice boasted a remarkably large crop of Arab-language features, but a strong Cannes 2023 selection of Arabic cinema that claimed kudos in various sections of the French fest left the Biennale with a picked over selection. Nevertheless, Venice can claim credit for nurturing this year’s Cannes Critics’ Week prize-winner “Inshallah a Boy” through its essential Final Cut in Venice industry program. Likewise, the Cannes Un Certain Regard title and best documentary co-winner “The Mother of All Lies” also benefited from Final Cut, as did this year’s Venice Days selection “Backstage,” a provocative drama boasting characters from the world of contemporary dance.

Final Cut in Venice supports films in post-production from five countries in the Middle East: Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, as well as all African countries. Its goal is to enhance the bridge-builder role of Venice by supporting the production of independent, quality films and promoting their competitiveness on the international market. Alessandra Speciale, curator of Final Cut in Venice, notes, “We received no fewer than 74 work-in-progress films, an increase of 27% compared to last year. It is a sign that production is settling down after the COVID crisis period.”

Among this year’s Final Cut selections are feature and documentary co-productions from Franco-Lebanese, Palestinian, Tunisian and Iraqi helmers with projects set in Africa, Israel, Sudan and Iraq. Their films, along with three African projects, are eligible for a baker’s dozen of cash and in-kind post-production awards.

In general, the Arab cinema selected for festivals boasts a far more daring formal language, a greater variety of genres and dares to confront the taboos of society. These characteristics are especially apparent in two of the documentaries from female helmers screening at Toronto: Tunisian Kaouther Ben Hania’s “Four Daughters” and Moroccan Asmae El Moudir’s “The Mother of All Lies.” The two films shared the Golden Eye for best documentary in Cannes.

“Bye Bye Tiberias,” world premiering at Venice and then segueing to Toronto, is another family-focused documentary by a female director. Here, helmer Lina Soualem mixes archival material and contemporary footage to trace four generations of women from the family of her Palestinian mother, renowned actress Hiam Abbass, who had a pivotal role on “Succession.”

Saudi Arabia has a stronger influence in the regional cinema this year. Money from the desert kingdom is helping to co-produce or support numerous films from Arab filmmakers, while the number of Saudi directors is on the rise. Antoine Khalife, director of Arab programs for Jeddah’s Red Sea Intl. Film Festival, explains that the festival’s Red Sea Fund is responsible for bringing more finance to local films. He, too, notes the increased availability of home-grown Saudi films, saying that he has eight or nine features to consider for their upcoming event.

Toronto’s selectors fell for Saudi films in a big way this year, with the three chosen titles coming through their open submissions process. International programmer Nataleah Hunter-Young notes that Ali Kalthami’s dark comedy “Mandoob” and Meshal Aljaser’s madcap creature feature “NAGA” are part of the same Saudi film collective and production company, Telfaz11, known for getting their start locally producing popular viral content on YouTube. “I think there is reason to expect a lot more from emerging Saudi directors as well as a continued expansion of Saudi Arabia’s presence as a production or co-production location, as is the case with Egyptian director Abu Bakr Shawky’s ‘Hajjan’ and Tunisian director Ben Hania’s ‘Four Daughters,’” says Hunter-Young.

In a sign that the new Arab directors are embracing genre storytelling, “NAGA” marks the first Saudi film selected for Toronto’s Midnight Madness program.

Toronto programmer Peter Kuplowsky says, “I am often looking for films that rattle an audience within their opening minutes, and more than any other title in my selection this year, ‘NAGA’ just blew me away with its shocking prologue. It perfectly set the stakes of the story, and as it unfolded I only became more and more impressed with how [director] Meshal was navigating so many potent and provocative themes, and never at the sacrifice of character or momentum.”

When the Jonas Brothers announced “The Tour,” fans were scratching their heads as it was toted as “5 Albums. One Night,” but the band has six albums. Of course, we’re talking about their debut which is It’s About Time.

While the brothers are known for their time at Disney, this was before Disney and frankly, wasn’t a massive success for the band. Sadly because of that, It’s About Time doesn’t get nearly as much love as it should.

However, after wrapping up ranking all the singles from each Taylor Swift album, I knew I had to do the Jonas Brothers. They’ve been my favorite band since 2007 and they hold a special place in my heart so I had to start from the very beginning and that’s with It’s About Time.

It’s About Time was released in August 2006 and was considered a flop. Released by Columbia Records, the album only produced two singles. Both of them are amazing so it’ll be hard to rank these two yet I’m excited to talk about these singles and show some love for It’s About Time as the Jonas Brothers currently aren’t.

Let’s rank the two singles from It’s About Time by the Jonas Brothers.

This was easy as pie for me which I’m sure I won’t be able to say later and since there are only two, let’s get in the song at my #2 spot which is “Year 3000.” Before my fellow Jonas fans come from me, just hear me out for a second.

Since “Year 3000” was a single on It’s About Time and the next album, I knew I wanted to put it in second place. While it’s one of the band’s most popular songs, it also wasn’t written by them despite being a massive hit. If anything, the recent remix the Jonas Brothers did with Busted finally gave Busted some much-needed props. While this song was one a lot of fans first heard from the band, it ended up coming in second place for me.

Of course with “Year 3000” being #2, that means that “Mandy” was the top single from It’s About Time. For me, this one was a no-brainer. I mean the song became part of the band’s 2019 reunion tour setlist. Whether you’re a new Jonas fan or not, you always recognize those first few chords of Mandy and know you’re in for a treat.

This is a song written about a friend of the brothers and is still a fan favorite to this day. It’s all about Mandy, how great she is, and how the lead singer aka Joe isn’t going to let her go. I feel like this is a great song to listen to if you’re just getting into their music and gives you a good idea of what the band’s sound would become.

In addition, it’s an incredibly catchy one and features easily one of my favorite choruses the Jonas Brothers have ever written. Some lines include: “Mandy always laughs when I act stupid/I am unaware that I’m a nuisance. With her, it’s never wasted time” and “Mandy always knows exactly what I’m feeling/ She’s always on my mind…” This song is quintessential early Jonas Brothers and it still lives on despite It’s About Time being over 15 years old now. Just listen below and you’ll know what I mean.

What do you think, my fellow Jonas Brothers fans? Do you agree with my ranking of the singles from It’s About Time? Let us know in the comments!

Netflix has set its first co-production with Swiss network RTS.

The project, a French and English-language period drama titled “Winter Palace,” will chart the birth of winter tourism in the Alps as conceived by a Swiss hotelier and British aristocrat in the early twentieth century.

Based on true events, “Winter Palace” is centred around ambitious proprietor Andre Morel, who, in 1899, envisions a five-star luxury hotel that will remain open throughout winter. He convinces wealthy aristo Lord Fairfax to come on board, and the two find themselves battling demanding clientele, rebellious staff and a hostile climate to make their dream a reality.

The eight-part series, which is based on an original story by Swiss producer Jean-Marc Fröhle, is being produced by Fröhle’s Swiss-based Point Prod (“Banking District”) and French outfit Oble Studios (“Fata Morgana”).

Lindsay Shapero has written the screenplay alongside Stephane Mitchell. Pierre Monnard has been lined up to direct.

“Having just secured the perfect shooting locations, we are excited about the breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary places that viewers will get to discover,” said Fröhle. “‘Winter Palace’ is a grand period drama with a very modern writing style crafted by the talented Lindsay Shapero. Casting is currently underway in Switzerland, France and the U.K., as the series will be shot both in English and French.”

Françoise Mayor, head of fiction and focumentaries at RTS, added: “The support of Netflix makes the production of this Swiss initiative possible, and it will soon shine worldwide, to the delight of both our audience and this new international player in the Swiss audiovisual industry.”

“Winter Palace” is due to go into production next month in the Swiss Alps and has been given a late 2024 release date.

According to the terms of the deal, Swiss viewers will be able to watch the series first on RTS1 and Play Suisse before the series hits Netflix globally (including Switzerland).

Ultimately, when we talk about Dakota Johnson, we think of her successful career in the film industry. However, we also have to mention her impeccable style, which has become a hallmark for the actor, model, and businesswoman—including her classic, yet timeless haircut featuring long auburn treses with caramel highlights and matching bangs.

So when images of her character in the independent film directed and written by Christy Hall, Daddio (in which she shares credits with American actor Sean Penn), showed her with a blonde bob, we thought for a moment that it would be the end of her signature look. However, that was not the case, as the performer utilized the stylistic magic of a wig to give life to the woman who, according to the synopsis of the film, will get into a cab and establish a visceral and deep conversation with the driver (played by Penn).

While promoting Daddio, which is expected to make its debut later this year, Dakota Johnson appeared at the 50th annual Telluride Film Festival in Colorado on August 31. There, the cameras caught her with a jovial and fresh look, with her hair worn down with little styling. Everything about her look adds up to a fashionable fall boho aesthetic, particularly the fluid cream crochet-knit dress by the French fashion house Chloé, which she contrasted nicely with a black Gucci handbag in black and a pair of chunky black boots.

With this look, Dakota Johnson proves playing around with sartorial aesthetics is easy enough to do by incorporating unexpected elements that ultimately complement the rest of the garments. So, if you are looking for inspiration in the boho chic look, it is a good idea to throw in a pair of combat boots or shoes with track soles to enjoy an otherwise summery dress during the fall months.

Kay Kay Menon’s Bambai Meri Jaan releases on September 14.

Apart from Kay Kay Menon, Bambai Meri Jaan also stars Avinash Tiwary, Kritika Kamra, and Nivedita Bhattacharya along with Amyra Dastur in pivotal roles.

Kay Kay Menon will soon be seen in a riveting crime drama series Bambai Meri Jaan. The makers dropped the trailer today. Apart from Menon, the edge-of-the-seat crime thriller also features Avinash Tiwary, Kritika Kamra, and Nivedita Bhattacharya along with Amyra Dastur in pivotal roles. From 14th September, the web series will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Watch the trailer here :

“Jab imaandari bhuk se takraati hai to hamesha haarti hai. Main imaandar tha, par Dara bhooka tha.” Kicking off with this profound narration, the trailer of Bambai Meri Jaan takes the viewers on a fast-paced, gritty and immersive ride through the mean streets of fictionalized 1970’s Bambai, where gang wars, crimes, and treachery were a common occurrence. Against this backdrop, the fictional series is a captivating saga of an honest cop who sees his son choose the path of crime to overcome a life of poverty and struggle. The trailer gives the viewers a glimpse of the pain a father undergoes as he sees his family being torn apart by lost ethos, greed, and corruption.

Talking about his role in the upcoming series, Kay Kay Menon said, “My character Ismail Kadri is multi-layered and complex. He is an honest cop and a doting father who isn’t perfect. On one hand, he is deeply committed to cleaning the city of Bambai of all crime, on the other, to save his family, he is forced to become a pawn to the city’s crime syndicate. Even as Ismail fights against all odds not to give in to the evil surrounding him, he sees his own flesh and blood rising as the city’s new gang lord. Shujaat and Rensil’s vision for this character was so clear and precise that it was easy for me to essay this role. Thank you, Prime Video and Excel Entertainment, Rensil and Shujaat, for making me a part of such a gut-wrenching story.”

Avinash Tiwary added, “When I first read the script and about my character, Dara Kadri, I was awestruck and hesitant at the same time. The character I play in Bambai Meri Jaan is something that very few actors get an opportunity to sink their teeth into, this early in their career. The way I saw it, there are villains and then there is Dara, a dynamic young man who believes that honest hard work won’t get you money and power. From nothing (hunger) to something (provider for the family and his people) to everything (power), bhook is an integral part of his journey. To become someone everyone bows down to, one who is feared and revered in equal measures, he has to turn into a cold-blooded monster. As a director, Shujaat’s creativity, attention to detail, and his ability to inspire and motivate each one of us to give our best, really enabled me to bring Dara’s character to life the way he and Rensil had envisioned while writing the script. I am looking forward to reactions from viewers from India and around the world.”

Produced by Excel Media and Entertainment’s Ritesh Sidhwani, Kassim Jagmagia and Farhan Akhtar, with the story by S. Hussain Zaidi, Bambai Meri Jaan is created by Rensil D’Silva and Shujaat Saudagar and directed by Shujaat Saudagar.

Mexican auteur Michel Franco’s latest film, “Memory,” starring Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard, world premieres in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

The film is his third successive bow on the Lido after “New Order” (2020), which won the grand jury prize, and “Sundown” (2021).

“Memory” follows Sylvia (Chastain), a social worker who leads a simple and structured life revolving around her daughter, her job and her AA meetings. This is disrupted when Saul (Sarsgaard) follows her home from their high school reunion. Their encounter profoundly impacts both of them as they open the door to the past.

“I’ve always been interested in broken people and dysfunctional families. But in this case, the approach was a bit different in terms of where the characters arrive to. I was interested in exploring the possibilities of people coming to terms with the past, if that ever happens, and how people can find common ground or not, depending on all the experiences they have,” Franco told Variety.

In film after film, Franco explores the lives of people who are on the margins of society, despite appearing to be entrenched in it. “I’m fascinated by outsiders, I think the most interesting characters are those that don’t fit,” Franco said. “As a teenager, I was always feeling that I had been born in the wrong place — I never felt quite in the right place. And I think that turned me into a filmmaker. That fed my curiosity and it’s always more interesting when people don’t simply accept their environment and are creating something, not just saying ‘yes’ to whatever came their way.”

Care workers also fascinate Franco and several of his films feature them, including Chastain’s central role in “Memory.” “I admire people that devote their lives to helping others. And it turns out that in life, they are rarely appreciated,” Franco said. “They’re either taken for granted or often have a hard time doing what they do, because not only they are not recognized, but they’re going through a lot of trouble. Sometimes they’re invisible. It’s more to try to understand those characters that really give away everything to others, which is unnatural in our society, because everyone does the opposite.”

Franco says that the decision to cast Oscar-winner Chastain was a “no-brainer.” The actor was familiar with his work, especially “New Order,” and it was a natural next step to work together. “Jessica is possibly the best actress in the states right now, it’s not an exaggeration to say she’s the best actress in the world,” Franco said, adding that the suggestion to cast Sarsgaard, whose previous work he rates highly, came from Chastain. “I wanted to make that decision with Jessica, because, it’s so important, the chemistry and the whole film relies on the tension of those characters,” Franco said.

“Memory” has been granted a SAG-AFTRA interim waiver, meaning that its stars are likely to attend the film’s premiere in Venice. On the Hollywood strikes, Franco says that they are a “very reasonable and fair” fight for basic rights.

Franco previously shot “Chronic” in Los Angeles, which was his first time shooting in the U.S. He was drawn to New York as many of his favorite films are set there and the city is full of great actors, including several who are in the “Memory” cast. He plans to continue making films in the U.S. and in Mexico.

“I’ll do both and maybe I’ll also make films in other places,” Franco said. “It is very tempting to keep working with such talented actors, like Jessica and Peter and Tim Roth [who he worked with in “Chronic” and “Sundown”] and every other talented actor that’s based in the States, not necessarily American. That’s what gets me back time and again. And also fact that we’re neighbors — it is only a four-hour flight from Mexico City to New York. We’re all North Americans and we have a very complex relationship as countries so it comes naturally in many ways.”

With all the excitement surrounding Hugh Jackman‘s return to playing Wolverine in Deadpool 3, it is easy to overlook the fact that the character will appear before the movie releases.

Right now, Wolverine fans are playing a pretty lengthy waiting game, as Deadpool 3‘s production halted due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood.

There’s been no official delay on Deadpool 3 beyond an early one from September to November of 2024 (which was before it eventually moved even earlier to May 2024), but the threequel was removed from Disney‘s list of 2024 releases.

Where Will Wolverine Be Before Deadpool 3 in the MCU?

Marvel Studios

Before Deadpool 3‘s inevitably delayed premiere, fans will have the chance to see the MCU take on Wolverine in the animated series X-Men ’97.

The show, which was initially announced with a Fall 2023 premiere window, is now set to debut on Disney+ in “early 2024.”

While not the Hugh Jackman Wolverine fans may be looking forward to, X-Men ’97‘s Logan will still be familiar, especially to fans of X-Men: The Animated Series from the ’90s.

The upcoming Disney+ show will act as a spiritual successor to that original series and will even star some of its predecessor’s main cast (including Cal Dodd as Wolverine). It’s taking the title of Uncanny X-Men literally.

Marvel

The Wolverine in the animated show is gruff, tough, and a fierce fighter. Full of Logan-isms like “Bub,” the character will give audiences both a downpour of nostalgia for what the character was and a boatload of excitement for what the character can be.

From his voice to his mannerisms and suit, Wolverine is among the most recognizable of the X-Men, regardless of whether he’s being portrayed in a comic, animation, or live-action.

The Bright Future of the MCU’s X-Men

Marvel

While Wolverine is the only X-Men-related character currently confirmed for both upcoming animated and live-action projects, he likely won’t stay alone for long.

Now that Disney owns Fox and the rights of the X-Men are in the company’s own hands, fans know to expect them in the MCU sooner rather than later. The team and concept of mutants are beginning to see introductions, from Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to Ms. Marvel and Namor being confirmed mutants.

However, the X-Men’s true integration into the MCU is most likely related to, if not a part of, Deadpool 3 — especially if the “Deadpool Kills the Fox Marvel Universe” rumors are confirmed to be true.

Granted, fans have no idea who will play Wolverine in the MCU long-term, as Hugh Jackman seemed to indicate this is his last time with the character. Maybe it won’t be, but there is no reason to assume it.

Still, his MCU role even being confirmed still puts him a step ahead of fan favorites like Storm, Rogue, and Magneto.

However, all three of those characters — as well as Wolverine, Cyclops, and more — will hit the small screen when X-Men ’97 does premiere in the early months of 2024.

  • The Batman – Part II fan art imagines Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight facing off against the terrifying and realistic live-action version of Clayface.
  • There has been no official announcement about Clayface appearing in the sequel, but rumors suggest that he may be part of Matt Reeves’ Batman universe.
  • The Golden Age version of Basil Karlo, a Hollywood actor turned murderer, would be an intriguing choice for Reeves to explore in The Batman – Part II, potentially as a psychological murder thriller.

Clayface gets pitched as the main antagonist for Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight in horrifying The Batman – Part II fan art. Following the big success of The Batman, Matt Reeves is just getting started with his Elseworlds-inspired universe. While the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still taking place, The Batman – Part II is on its way, with Reeves returning once again to direct while Pattinson is back as the Caped Crusader.

Whether it is popular theories about The Batman – Part II or endless fan art and trailers suggesting which villain he should fight next, the fanbase is constantly hoping for and speculating about new updates about the sequel. For the time being, The Batman – Part II plot details are being kept under wraps as the world is left speculating what Reeves is cooking for the next installment.

New The Batman – Part II fan art by Victor Batista gives Pattinson’s hero a new enemy in the form of a more realistic – and more intimidating – live-action form of Clayface, shown looming over the protector of Reeves’ Gotham. While Clayface has been featured in a handful of live-action TV shows, the supervillain has never been part of any Batman movie over the past few decades, making the fan art an insightful look into what a movie version of the character could look like.

Is Clayface In The Batman – Part II?

To this point, there has been no official announcement made by Reeves or anyone who is involved with The Batman – Part II that Clayface will appear in the sequel. With both of the major Hollywood strikes taking place, Reeves couldn’t even make any comments on a supposed Clayface storyline, even if he wanted to. However, thanks to rumors back in April, there is a chance that Clayface may be entering Reeves’ The Batman universe

If Clayface is actually in The Batman – Part II, there is a particular version that Reeves could end up using, as multiple villains have carried the name in the comics. For The Batman franchise, the Golden Age incarnation of Basil Karlo would be perfect for The Batman – Part II, especially given the heavy detective elements that Reeves has added to this version of the Gotham City vigilante. Basil’s Clayface, who was originally a Hollywood actor before he started murdering his co-stars who played characters he killed in his films, would be a brilliant psychological murder thriller for Batman to investigate in The Batman – Part II.

Seeing Reeves tackle someone like Clayface – even if it was the traditional shapeshifting mud monster and didn’t lean into the mystery elements as much – would be fascinating, and also allow another famous Batman villain to shine who has never had a chance to be in a live-action film. Given that Reeves is expanding this franchise, it wouldn’t be shocking if someone like Clayface even had his own Max series, similar to Colin Farrell’s The Penguin, in order to add more depth to the villain’s mythology in this continuity. Hopefully, once the strikes come to an end, Reeves will be able to share new exciting details about The Batman – Part II before they start principal photography.
