Harry Styles is doing some late-night talking with someone new, apparently. The pop star was just spotted getting up close and personal with model, actress and author Emily Ratajkowski on a recent trip to Japan, and naturally, the internet is undergoing a volcanic eruption of emotions in response.

It’s not unlike the deluge of reactions that flooded Twitter more than two years ago, when Styles was first confirmed to be dating his Don’t Worry Darling director and costar, Olivia Wilde. The two were together up until just a few months ago, when it was revealed in November that the pair had gone their separate ways.

Now, it looks like the “As It Was” singer is moving on. He and Ratajkowski — who was linked to comedian Eric André as recently as last month — were filmed kissing against the side of a car during a rainy day in Tokyo, where Styles just closed out the Asian leg of his ongoing Love on Tour with two shows at Ariake Arena Friday (March 24) and Saturday (March 25).

By strange coincidence, the footage surfaced on the exact date — March 25 — that Zayn Malik broke hearts across the globe by announcing his departure from One Direction

Reactions to footage of the new romance ranged from happy for the potential new couple to heartbroken that Styles may once again be off the market. But overall, the unifying feeling was one of pure shock. “Just saw harry styles passionately making out with emily ratajkowski… i can’t breathe,” one fan tweeted.

“harry are you dating emily ratajkowski? it’s not really my business i’m only 14 and stuff but i have always thought that we were going to get married,” joked another.

Some were excited for the new pairing, with one fan tweeting, “emrata and harry styles honestly power couple.”

See some of the best fan reactions below:

Sam Jacobs is Named Interim Editor in Chief; Edward Felsenthal Remains Executive Chairman and Becomes a Contributing Editor

TIME CEO Jessica Sibley sent the following note to staff on Monday:

Team,

Today, I am sharing the news that Edward Felsenthal has decided to step down as Editor in Chief. Edward will remain at TIME in his current capacity as Executive Chairman and will become a Contributing Editor. He has led TIME’s global expansion over the last ten years—including six years as Editor in Chief and four years as Editor in Chief and CEO—by producing high-impact, agenda-setting and award-winning journalism while pushing TIME into new editorial verticals including business, health and climate, expanding TIME’s globally-renowned franchises and events with the TIME100 Summit, TIME100 Next and TIME100 Impact Awards and growing TIME’s global audience to more than 105 million, the largest in our history.

Beginning today, Sam Jacobs becomes Interim Editor in Chief. During a decade at TIME, including the past four years as Deputy Editor, Sam has worked with Edward and senior leadership on driving the strategic direction of the editorial team and leading TIME’s trusted journalism across all platforms. In addition to expanding TIME’s global events and live journalism, creating and launching The Leadership Brief, building a sustainability vertical for TIME CO2, which will launch this April with the Earth Awards, and establishing a strong partnership between TIME Studios and the newsroom, Sam has been instrumental in the recruitment, hiring and management of editorial staff across the world. I look forward to working with Sam as we continue our focus on TIME’s digital transformation and the growth of our storied brand.

I have had the privilege of working with Edward since the early ’00s at The Wall Street Journal and am pleased TIME’s long-standing relationship with him will continue. In his new role, Edward will manage new projects, write for TIME, represent TIME, lead interviews on-stage at our events, and executive produce specials with TIME Studios, among other responsibilities.

As TIME enters its second century, our journalism remains at the core of the company’s global impact and broader mission. Please join me in thanking Edward for supporting that mission and in welcoming Sam into his new position.

Best,

Jess

Edward Felsenthal sent the following note to staff on Monday:

Dear all,

TIME as we often say is a study in leadership, and one of the themes from the opportunity to cover and meet many leaders over my years here is recognizing the right time to make a change. After 10 years at TIME, six as Editor in Chief, four of those as CEO—and with our centennial birthday behind us and a great new chapter for TIME underway—this feels like the right time for me.

I’m excited for my own next chapter—more about that to come—and also thrilled to continue as part of the TIME family. I’ll be on staff until June 1, and then as Jess shared, will remain Executive Chairman and become a contributing editor, writing, working with our Events and Studios teams and supporting our company and our journalism in every way I can.

In my first Editor’s letter to readers in 2017, I wrote about the obligation that all of us feel to ensure an extraordinary Second Century for this institution. TIME couldn’t be in better hands with Jess leading our company, Sam steering our journalism, and all of you who further our mission every day. I am grateful for the work you do and for the opportunity to be a part of it.

Best,

Edward

“Having a difficult time expressing my feelings about being inducted into the US Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame last night. But I keep coming back to honor and gratitude,” Bode Miller posted on Mar. 25, sharing highlights from his induction ceremony. Along with photos and videos of him giving his speech during Saturday’s event, Bode, 45, shared snaps of himself alongside his children – sons Nate, 10, and Nash, 8 – and his wife, Morgan Beck Miller, as she held their 4-year-old Easton. In the gallery’s last slide. Bode shared a photo of him with six of his children – Nash, Nate, Easton, 3-year-old twins Asher and Askel, and his 15-month-old daughter, Scarlett Olivia.

Bode wrote that it was a huge “honor” to be “included among some of the greatest names in the sport. People I have looked up to my entire life. Honored to be recognized by an organization that I hold in the highest regard. But at the same time so deeply grateful for all the people that helped bring me to this point. My career would not be possible without my parents, my grandparents, siblings, and of course, my beautiful wife.”

“Beyond my family, I am grateful for the army of people from my community growing up who took my dreams seriously and supported me long before accolades,” he added. “To coaches, sponsors, teammates, mentors, and friends who supported me in my good moments and my bad, I am so grateful, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without you.”

Bode shares a son, Samuel, with his ex, Sarah McKenna. He also has a daughter, Neesyn, with ex Chanel Johnson. Bode and Morgan, 35, are proud parents of Scarlett Olivia, Asher, Askel, Nash, and Easton. Sadly, their 19-month-old daughter Emmy passed away in June 2018 after a drowning accident.

“We had Easton, and Morgan was heavily pregnant with him when Emmy passed away. So, you know, we had that sort of immediate distraction that you just couldn’t ignore,” said Bode when speaking EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife in 2019. ” Morgan really wanted to do right by Easton, and she had to take care of herself, which was, I think, a challenge because any traumatic thing like that you’re just like — you go into like a weird shock, really. You stop eating, and there are all these other things that are really hard to manage.”

“We’re just kind of trying to figure out how to continue. It’s been challenging, obviously, but in terms of the family unit, it couldn’t have gone any better,” he added. ” It’s in a sense where you’re kind of happy that you got forced to deal with things more quickly and like progress forward. Because it, I can see that, you know, we talk to families all the time actually who go through this type of thing, and they just can’t move forward. It’s just brutal.”

A new cinematic title sequence has been revealed for Dead Island 2 and offers a wild departure from the original trailer.

Dead Island 2 was originally first announced all the way back in 2014 with luscious palm trees, a bright and upbeat tone complete with some fun music. Despite swapping developers a number of times in the nine-year wait for the game, the team over at Dambuster Studios appears to be honoring the original vision.

Cut to the new cinematic and we see everything from eyeballs inside of martini glasses, bloodstained swimming pools, chemtrails over the (abandoned) country club, and a diner that’s seen better days. While somber in its lyricism, Danger Mouse and Karen O’s Drown sets the scene wonderfully as the post-apocalyptic Los Angeles is revealed.

L.A. Condemned

It’s a far cry from the missteps taken when marketing the original Dead Island which built up an obscene level of hype through the release of one of the best trailers ever made. Cue the slow and sad piano ostinato which scores a family being tragically taken out by a zombie infection while on holiday played entirely in reverse. Even well over a decade since the reveal, the stark visuals have stayed with me. If only the game that followed was of the same quality.

From what I’ve seen of Dead Island 2, it looks like a title that still understands itself despite the years spent in limbo. Much like the original game,  it looks like this long-awaited sequel is better placed with friends. As you might expect, there is safety in numbers when taking on the zombocalypse. By no means does Dambuster Studios’ upcoming release look like high art, but as someone who adores old-school zombie action, leaning more into the grindhouse schlock isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Dead Island 2 is set to launch on April 21 for PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and last-generation consoles. Though my expectations have been tempered, I’m still looking forward to playing this zombie co-op game, and I certainly appreciate a more honest look at what we can expect when the game releases next month.

Adam Sandler hasn’t always been the recipient of glowing reviews for his work, but thanks to his family and friends, those reviews have never made him feel bad. In fact, he’s simply never believed them, because those same family and friends have turned him into “a delusional psychotic man.”

At least, that’s how Sandler himself explained it on Sunday night, as he accepted his Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. After several of those loved ones took the stage at the Kennedy Center to celebrate and honor him — including Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Stiller, and more — Sandler himself took the stage.

According to the actor and comedian, he’s always had infallible confidence, which began with the support of his family. Sandler recalled that his older brother was the one who said he should be an actor, and assured him that he was “as funny as Rodney Dangerfield and Eddie Murphy.” And, as the years went on, Sandler said, the people he surrounded himself with kept his confidence up.

“People always would ask me, ‘Those bad reviews you get, how does that make you feel? Make you feel like f—in’ s—?’ And I’d say, no, it really doesn’t,” Sandler said with a laugh. “I think the reason I get to say that didn’t hurt me is ’cause so many of you guys in this room made me feel great about what we’ve done together.”

He continued: “And all my fellow comedians, actors, writers, collaborators, crew members, people on the streets, my family, my kids, my forever girl Jackie, all make me feel like the critics didn’t know what the hell they were talking about. So thank you for all that. Thank you. Thank you for creating a delusional psychotic man.”

As always, Sandler finished his speech with a punchline, joking that he won the 2023 Mark Twain award for athleticism, rather than comedy.

You can watch Sandler’s full acceptance speech in the video above.

After having her role recast for the MCU‘s upcoming Disney+ show, Daredevil: Born Again, one of the stars from the original Daredevil Netflix series broke her silence on the move.

While Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are both in line to reprise their roles as Daredevil and Kingpin from Netflix’s Defenders Saga, Marvel Studios has made it clear that there will be plenty of roles recast for the new Disney+ entry.

News about casting for the show picked up in early March with news that Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson weren’t on the call sheet for Born Again, indicating that both Karen Page and Foggy Nelson will be played by new actors in this MCU series.

This has a number of fans upset and curious about what this means for other roles in Daredevil: Born Again, bringing up plenty of questions about how the story will fit both into the larger MCU and potentially with its Netflix counterpart as well.

Daredevil Star Speaks Out on Born Again Recast

Netflix

Actress Ayelet Zurer, who portrayed Wilson Fisk‘s love interest and eventual wife, Vanessa, in Netflix’s Daredevil, took to Instagram to finally address being recast for Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again series.

This comes after Sandrine Holt was cast as Vanessa Fisk for the new MCU series, making her the first known character to be publicly recast from the Netflix show.

Zurer shared an article looking back on her Daredevil character, highlighting her best moments from her original three-season run.

In the second part of her Instagram Story, she expressed her sadness to not continue on in the Disney+ show while sharing how big of a fan she still is of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin:

“Sad to not take part. But I will always be Vincent D’Onofrio’s biggest fan”

When Will Daredevil: Born Again Finish Casting?

Daredevil: Born Again‘s casting has been quite the intriguing topic with no confirmation regarding its connection to or separation from its Netflix counterpart. And while this round of recasting will disappoint many, including those being recast themselves, the hope is that it will all be for the benefit of Marvel making a show that will speak to the entire MCU fandom.

Born Again has been incredibly busy on the casting front by bringing more than half a dozen new stars into the series, although most of the roles haven’t been revealed yet outside of Cox, D’Onofrio, Holt, and Jon Bernthal‘s returning Punisher.

But with filming taking place for almost the entire rest of this year, there is still a great deal of time for these roles to reveal themselves, particularly if Daredevil ends up facing the delays that have plagued the MCU recently.

Daredevil: Born Again is currently filming, and the series is set to release on Disney+ in Spring 2024.

Review: Black Adam #9

Summary

Teth Adam tells of his banishment, as malicious forces plot against the Wizard’s first champion in this month’s Black Adam #9.

Last time, Teth Adam began telling a story about his early days as the Wizard’s champion (then called “The Mighty Adam”) to Malik who is suffering from a cosmic space virus. This issue picks up the tale, The Mighty Adam having usurped and murdered Pharoh Teti. The burden of leadership weighed heavy upon the liberator-turned-king, so he does what any god-like ruler would do in his situation: The Mighty Adam builds a giant monument to himself in the desert and uses it as a retreat.

However, he was unaware that he’d been followed to this secret refuge by Ibac, and when Adam transformed back into his human form, he was muzzled and stabbed by the villain. Suddenly, a man by the name of Mereruka appears and says he speaks for the Circle of Crows (supposed enemies of the Wizard Mamaragan and his Eternity Council). Mereruka demands that Mighty Adam abdicate the throne and swear allegiance to him as Pharaoh, lest Teth Adam bleeds out from his stab wound. Teth Adam manages to unmuzzle himself and transform into Mighty Adam. He escapes in search of Ibac but fails to find him.

Later, Adam receives a visit from the Wizard Mamaragan. Ibac had found the Wizard and told him that Teth Adam was responsible for Aman’s death, Teth Adam’s nephew who Mamaragan originally chose to be his champion. Angry with the Mighty Adam, Mamaragan transformed him into Black Adam and banished him to the outer reaches of space.

Meanwhile, in the present, Teth Adam receives a visit from a woman named Oni Grace, who tells him that she knows how to locate Ibac.

Positives

One of the better parts of this issue is Priest’s treatment of Black Adam’s “other origin.” The story of Aman and Black Adam was established during Geoff Johns’ Justice League run during the New 52 era. However, we never knew when or how Black Adam’s tenure as the Wizard’s champion ended. Priest picks up where Johns left off and ran with his ideas. He also managed to weave in some traditional Shazam lore with Ibac: a nice touch for old-school fans. It’s apparent that Priest wants to both honor the character’s history while also trying to pioneer a new story. Overall, Priest’s version of the origin is both telling and thoughtful, as it gives insight into one of DC’s more complicated villains.

In many ways, Black Adam #9 is an exploration of Nietzsche’s “will to power” thereby adding depth to a supervillain story. Through sheer, brut force, Teth became The Mighty Adam and then Pharaoh. He seized power simply because he could, and he paid the price when someone more powerful came along to punish him. Fast forward four thousand years and Black Adam once again has once again declared himself ruler. I suspect by issue twelve, we’ll learn if Black Adam has learned his lesson.

Negatives

I have been banging this drum since this book began, but I’m going to say it again: Priest’s storytelling is frustratingly choppy and overwhelming. He’s introduced a swathe of new characters while writing a ton of subplots. If you’re lost, then you’d better learn to roll with the punches, because he does very little hand-holding in this book.

For example, Malik has a friend/love interest that was introduced briefly in an earlier issue. She appears in this issue again, briefly, and for the life of me, I cannot remember her name. Not once in the issue does Priest state this character’s name. She’s fairly minor overall, but Priest has made a big deal of her bringing Malik Black Adam’s signet, which he left in the US. There are times I wish that Priest would provide a title page with character names and recaps. This would help readers keep track of everything.

Conclusion

As per usual, Black Adam #9 is another installment in a bloated yet brilliant title. When it comes to industry writers, Priest is an intellectual powerhouse. He’s well-read and unafraid to take this title to places usually untread by comic writers. However, this strength is also a frustration, as it’s hard to follow the writing when serialized. I look forward to rereading this run once it’s released in trade format. It’ll undoubtedly be easier to digest.

139 Review: Black Adam #9 [Editor’s Note: This review

There’s hope for the future in a post-apocalyptic world.

The rise in popularity of post-apocalyptic stories in recent years has led to a saturation of tropes and themes within the genre. However, the Netflix series Sweet Tooth manages to subvert these tropes in several refreshing and unexpected ways.

With its hopeful tone, complex characters, and emphasis on relationships and nature, Sweet Tooth provides a unique and engaging take on the post-apocalyptic world.

In this article, we will explore how Sweet Tooth breaks away from apocalyptic storytelling tropes of the genre, and examine how these subversions elevate the show into a must-watch for fans of the genre.

Let’s dive in.

How Does the TV Show Sweet Tooth Subvert Apocalyptic Tropes?

Sweet Tooth is a Netflix original series based on the DC Comics series of the same name, created by Jeff Lemire. The show is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious virus has wiped out much of the human population and caused the birth of hybrid children who are part human and part animal.

The story follows Gus (Christian Convery), a young hybrid boy who embarks on a dangerous journey to find his mother with the help of a loner named Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). The show is a unique and refreshing take on the post-apocalyptic genre, with a hopeful tone, complex characters, and an emphasis on relationships and nature.

This is what sets it apart from other stories in a similar genre.

  1. Hopeful tone: Unlike most apocalyptic stories that have a bleak and hopeless tone, Sweet Tooth is surprisingly hopeful. It presents a world where despite the devastation caused by the virus and the emergence of hybrid children, there is still kindness, love, and hope.

  2. The hybrid children: The hybrid children, who are half-human and half-animal, are the central characters of the show. Instead of being portrayed as monsters or abominations, they are shown as innocent and pure beings who are just trying to survive. This subverts the common trope of humans fearing and hating anything different.

  3. Complex characters: The show also subverts the common apocalyptic trope of black-and-white morality. The characters are complex, and their motivations are not always clear-cut. Even the villains have their reasons for doing what they do, which makes them more nuanced and interesting.

  4. Focus on relationships: The show also subverts the trope of survival at all costs. While survival is certainly a major theme, the show also emphasizes the importance of human connections and relationships. The characters form bonds and relationships that are just as important as their survival.

  5. Emphasis on nature: Another way the show subverts apocalyptic tropes is by emphasizing the importance of nature. In most post-apocalyptic stories, nature is portrayed as a dangerous and hostile force. However, in Sweet Tooth, nature is shown as something beautiful and restorative. The characters often find solace and healing in nature, and it plays a significant role in the story.

Summing Up How Sweet Tooth Subverts Apocalyptic Tropes?

Sweet Tooth offers a refreshing and unique take on the post-apocalyptic genre. By subverting traditional tropes and themes, the show manages to provide a hopeful and inspiring story that is both engaging and thought-provoking.

Its complex characters, emphasis on relationships and nature, and nuanced storytelling make it a standout among the many post-apocalyptic stories available today.

It not only provides entertainment, but it also challenges our preconceptions and beliefs about the end of the world and reminds us that even in the bleakest of times, there is still hope to be found.

Blue-collar science fiction is a time-honored tradition from the ’70s. Trumbull’s Silent Runnings, Carpenter’s Dark Star, Hyam’s Outland, and Duncan Jones’ Moon all demonstrate a conceit wherein corporate overlords screw over the working man. Oftentimes, these films take place either around the orbit of the Moon or somewhere we haven’t yet been in the solar system. With Berton Pierce’s Adventurados we will see a film that’s devoted to truckers in space or cargo pilots; Irish ones at that.

Spyre (David Masterson) and Frug (Stephen Patrick Hanna) are nearing the end of their careers. Facing the prospect of a subpar retirement package, the two business partners and friends agree to an off-the-book shipping job for a massive interstellar corporation, Blackburton. Promised a payday ten times the fee for this hush-hush mission, Spyre and Frug accept with some trepidation. As far as they know, they’re both 3rd generation clones, the most expendable and useless generation of clones. For this mission, they will be joined by Dru (Gabrielle Miller), who is safeguarding Blackburton’s cargo.

Spyre and Frug will have comedic run-ins with Canadian Russian highwaymen, Union Pilots, and a computer interface that only speaks Spanish. Nevertheless, they are determined to prevail, as the fee, they will receive upon successful completion, will enable them to find somewhere quiet to live and flirt with the pretty local girls. As you may surmise, they plan on retiring somewhere tropical.

“Facing the prospect of a subpar retirement package, the two business partners and friends agree to an off-the-book shipping job…”

Existing most of your life in the vacuum of space requires you to develop some coping mechanisms. For Spyre, this is watching the interspace television offerings. For Frug, he likes to spacewalk and meditate on the cruelty of fate that nothing on his cargo vessel ever works. There are many cute bits that are observed as the erstwhile crew shleps their cargo to Earth Station. Overall, being an Irish approach to comedy, I would have you know Adventurados will achieve more grins and awkward giggle moments than belly laughs.

This is not to say it’s funny; it is. The sense of humor is that of the dark and down Irish sensibility. The sort of comedy you could expect to see in Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. It’s humorous without being gut-bustlingly funny. But, of course, the actors performing the comedy bring their energies to the fore, and with Masterson and Hanna, you have two veterans who are quite funny in their domestic market but may not translate so well across the world.

The direction, writing, and visual effects are all spot on. I love Pierce’s use of models. From what I could tell, there was little to no CGI in this film. I expect the whole thing to be practical. For that, it wins itself back a few points. I enjoyed Pierce’s scenario, and the director brings the right amount of high stakes blended with sheer utter boredom.

Seek out Adventurados, if you like Irish films or you want to experience a blue-collar comedy in space.

Dutch musician, 41, faces court bid to halt his ‘obsessive’ sperm donation amid claims he has misled women on his way to fathering 550 children around the world

  • Jonathan Jacob Meijer, 41, may have fathered nearly 550 children, claim lawyers
  • Mr Meijer is accused of misleading hundreds of women and acting ‘unlawfully’

A Dutch musician is facing court in a bid to get him to stop his ‘obsessive’ sperm donating amid claims he has fathered hundreds of children around the world.

Jonathan Jacob Meijer, 41, has misled hundreds of women all over the world and may have fathered nearly 550 children, claimed the Donorkind foundation, which is suing him.

Mr Meijer, from the Hague, Netherlands, was blacklisted in 2017 after the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology warned he had fathered 102 children via ten different clinics in the Netherlands.

But he continued to donate abroad in Denmark and Ukraine and offered his services through websites and social media, according the Dutch news website AD.

Eva, the Dutch woman at the centre of the court case, had a child by Meijer in 2018 and said it made her feel ‘sick to her stomach’ that he had fathered so many children.

She said: ‘If I had known he had already fathered more than 100 children I would never have chosen him.

‘If I think about the consequences this could have for my child I am sick to my stomach.

‘Many mothers have told him he needs to stop but nothing helps. So going to court is the only option I have to protect my child.’

Eva and the Donorkind foundation want to stop Mr Meijer donating and to find out exactly which clinics he has donated sperm to.

They have accused Mr Meijer of ‘lying’ to hundreds of women about the number of children he has fathered.

Eva also wants all his sperm still in storage to be destroyed, unless it has been reserved for a woman who already has one of his children.

The foundation’s chairman Ties van der Meer said: ‘We are taking action against this man because national government is doing nothing.

‘He has a global reach via internet and he does business with large, international sperm banks.’

Donorkind’s lawyer Mark de Hek said: ‘This behavior is dangerous for the mental well-being and health of donor children. By preferring his reproductive urge, the donor is acting unlawfully.

‘In addition, he violates the agreements with the clinics and with the prospective parents, because they trusted his promise that he would father a maximum of 25 children.’

Jen Shah‘s prison release date has seemingly been moved up from 2029 to 2028, cutting a year off of her sentence.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons’ inmate database lists the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star’s release date as August 30, 2028. That reduces her 78-month sentence to 66 months. Us Weekly has reached out to her attorney for comment.

Shah, 49, requested to serve her sentence at Federal Prison Camp, Bryan (FPC Bryan) in Texas and surrendered herself on February 17.

The Bravo star was arrested in March 2021 — during the production of season 2 of RHOSLC — and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. She maintained her innocence until July 2022 when she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. She was sentenced in January 2023 to six and a half years behind bars.

In addition to her incarceration, her sentence — which also includes five years of supervised release — requires Shah to pay $6,645,251 in restitution and forfeit $6,500,000, 30 luxury items and 78 counterfeit luxury items.

“With today’s sentence, Jennifer Shah finally faces the consequences of the many years she spent targeting vulnerable, elderly victims,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a January press release. “These individuals were lured in by false promises of financial security, but in reality, Shah and her co-conspirators defrauded them out of their savings and left them with nothing to show for it. This conviction and sentence demonstrate once again that we will continue to vigorously protect victims of financial fraud and hold accountable those who engage in fraudulent schemes.”

One day before her surrender, Shah recorded a video interview in which she shared how emotional she felt prior to entering FPC Bryan.

“There’s so many emotions that I’m feeling right at this moment and getting ready to surrender is emotional,” Shah said at the time. “You know I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous and scared. Because to be away from my family, that’s what I fear the most is you know that transition of not being able to hug and kiss my boys and my husband every day and my mom and but at the same time, all of those emotions I also feel hopeful and am motivated to do a good job, you know, and make the most of my time away.”

Since reporting to prison, Shah has been keeping the world updated on her time in the big house through her online diary. She recounted reporting to the federal facility with husband Sharrieff Shah, who she married in August 1994, and son Omar, 19, by her side. (Jen and Sharrieff also share son Sharrieff Jr., 29.)

“I keep thinking this is insane, completely ridiculous. Why am I here? I mean, I know why I’m here, but this just feels like someone like me doesn’t belong here. I’ve never been in trouble before,” she wrote earlier this month. “Then I instantly stop myself from going down this self-destructive path of thinking. I am here because of my bad decisions. I am here because I did this to myself and there is no one to blame but me.”

A horse’s death on the set of Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has prompted the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to reassert its call for Hollywood to end the use of animals in productions.

“It seems that living underground with the orcs is par for the course for the producers of ‘The Rings of Power,’ because they have the option to use CGI, mechanical rigs and other humane methods that wouldn’t run vulnerable horses to death on set,” PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange wrote in a statement.

PETA also noted that this isn’t the only time in the past year that it has protested the abuse of horses on Hollywood productions. Last summer, members of the organization held a protest outside the set of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” after a horse died on set. Whistleblowers also accused the production of forcing horses to work in extreme heat without water breaks, leading to an incident when a stressed horse broke away from its wrangler and trampled an actor.

“PETA is calling on the show’s creators — and all other producers — to take on a new quest without using any real horses. If they can’t avoid exploiting animals for their art, they should find a new medium, because no one wants to see a spinoff for TV with torment as the theme,” Lange continued.

A spokesperson for Amazon confirmed the horse’s death, saying that it occurred on March 21 “whilst the horse was being exercised prior to rehearsals” alongside 20 other horses and before shooting had begun. A veterinarian and an American Humane Association representative were present at the time, and heart failure was determined to be the cause of death after an independent necropsy.

The spokesperson also said that the horse’s death was the first in the history of The Devil’s Horsemen, the European vendor that supplied the horses for “The Rings of Power,” and that the horse had shown no signs of health problems prior to the incident.

For years, PETA has argued that horses and other animals should not be used on film and television productions and that replacing them with CGI should become industry standard. The organization has pointed to Disney/20th Century’s 2020 film “Call of the Wild” as an example that Hollywood should follow, as the film used CGI in lieu of actual dogs for its adaptation of Jack London’s sled dog adventure novel.

In 2012, PETA condemned Warner Bros./New Line’s adaptation of “The Hobbit” after whistleblowers reported the deaths of more than two dozen animals used in its production at a farm where they were housed, including three horses and several goats, sheep and chickens.

Jeremy Renner shared a video of himself walking on a treadmill nearly three months after he was severely injured in a snowplow accident.

On Sunday, the “Hawkeye” star posted a clip on Instagram captioned, “Now is the time for my body to rest and recover from my will.” In the video, Renner walks slowly on the treadmill and explains to someone that using the machine is like “having a cane” that supports 60% of his weight.

Multiple outlets have reported that the exercise equipment in the clip is an “anti-gravity treadmill” — a device used in physical therapy to help patients regain their ability to walk.

On Jan. 17, Renner announced that he had been released from the hospital after he was crushed by his own snowplow near his home in the Lake Tahoe area on New Year’s Day. The 52-year-old Marvel actor previously said he broke more than 30 bones in the accident.

“Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love,” Renner wrote Jan. 21 on Instagram.

“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I …. Much love and appreciation to you all. These … bones will mend , grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens . Love and blessings to you all.”

Giving major characters makeovers or outright replacing them was all the rage in the ’90s. Sure we’d already seen Steve Rogers switched out for John Walker as Captain America and James Rhodes replace Tony Stark as Iron Man in the ’80s, but it was a theme that hit big in the era that fashion forgot. Thor would be no exception. Architect Eric Masterson had befriended Thor, but the two were merged when Eric – who had already proven his worthiness by lifting Mjolnir – was merged with the God of Thunder to save his life, mimicking the Thor/Donald Blake dynamic from years earlier.

Now, Thor is about to be pushed to the edge of reason in a deadly battle with Loki that will leave the universe without the Asgardian god’s protection. Can Eric Masterson prove himself worthy one final time?

I put this one together for my good buddy Eric Anthony – the other half the the Omniverse Comics Guide and host of the Cave of Solitude podcast! The Marvel Comics Guide will jump to the new Omniverse Comics Guide website soon, where you’ll find reading orders for characters, teams, storylines and events from Marvel, DC and independent comic companies. More news to follow!

Giving major characters makeovers or outright replacing

The release of The Flash is finally getting closer. After a long wait, fans of the Scarlet Speedster will finally be able to see the film adaptation of Flashpoint in theaters, with Ezra Miller starring as Barry Allen once again under the direction of Argentinian Andy Muschietti. Unfortunately, however, this character’s first solo adventure could also be his last.

More than a month after the first announcements about the next version of the DCU by James Gunn and Peter Safran, it seems that the only movie from the slot that will hit theaters this year within the franchise with a chance of surviving is Blue Beetle since the hero by Xolo Mariduena had not been introduced until now. It could be easier to make him fit into what is coming.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

At the moment, only a few heroes from the comic book company have already confirmed their appearance in the new extended universe, including Superman, Batman, and Supergirl, who will arrive with Superman Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, and Woman of Tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Gunn will introduce some familiar faces like Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller in her The Suicide Squad spin-off series and introduce new groups like the Creature Commandos, who will debut in an animated series but could appear in live-action form in the future.

New Looks at The Flash and Dark Flash

Warner Bros.

The Flash, which hits theaters in July, will work as a small reboot for the current universe, which suits it very well considering the story it will present. In the film, Barry travels back in time using the Speed Force to save his mother, but it completely alters his own reality, creating one where metahumans don’t exist, and there’s no one to protect the world from General Zod’s invasion.

However, Michael Shannon’s character will not be the only villain in the film. Barry will also have to face Dark Flash, and thanks to new merchandising for the movie by Funko Pop! (courtesy of user Flashpointsaber), we have a new look at the costumes of the titular hero and his nemesis:

Created by Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, and artist Ron Wagner, Dark Flash first appeared in a brief cameo in The Flash (vol. 2) #138 before being definitively introduced in The Flash #141 in September 1998. Essentially, the character fills the same role as Death for those who possess super speed in the DC Universe, returning the speedster to his power source: the Speed Force.

It’s the end of an era as Nintendo is shutting down its Wii U and 3DS eShops today (March 27th) at 5PM PST (8PM EST). After that, you’ll no longer be able to purchase new games for those consoles, though you’ll still be able to redownload titles you’ve already purchased for the time being.

The company first warned of the eShop closures back in February 2022, and barred users from adding funds to their accounts on August 29th. Nintendo wrote at the time that that the move was “part of the natural lifecycle for any product line as it becomes less used by consumers over time.”

That may be true, but a trove of over 1,000 digital games will be lost in the shutdown, including Dr. Luigi, Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge, and Pokémon Picross, to name but a few. In total, 450 digital-only Wii U games, 600 digital-only 3DS games and 530 virtual console games will disappear, VGC reported. Of the latter, 335 aren’t currently available on Nintendo Switch Online.

That means the only option for folks who want to play these classic games will be physical copies, which have soared in value. Many other download-exclusive games, meanwhile, will disappear for good.

It turns out even the saddest birthday is too much for Logan, as the kids win a battle that restarts the war.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Succession” Season 4, Episode 1, “The Munsters.”]

“Succession” sure knows how to take the “happy” out of “happy birthday.” Following last season’s devastating bash for Kendall (Jeremy Strong), the beginning of the end starts with another commemoration, this time absent a vaginal entryway or sippy cup cocktails. Logan (Brian Cox) doesn’t celebrate like his son, though he doesn’t celebrate like he used to, either. Way back when “Succession” first premiered, it was Logan’s 80th birthday. The Roy family gathered at his palatial New York apartment, before heading out in helicopters for a fateful softball game. Now, after the fallout in Tuscany, there’s no warm welcome when Logan comes up the elevator. Three of his kids are on the opposite coast. His wife, Marcia (Hiam Abbass), is in Milan… shopping… forever. The birthday boy shuffles through his many rooms as if looking for an escape, wondering aloud why everyone is so damn happy.

The better question is why he isn’t. In the interim months between Season 3’s finale and now, Logan has gotten everything he’s claimed to want: He’s two days out from netting a massive payday and securing his personal legacy by selling Waystar Royco to GoJo CEO Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). He’s fended off his children’s attempt at a hostile takeover, time and time again, and he’s about to acquire his white whale: Pierce Global Media, led by his left-wing nemesis, Nancy “Nan” Pierce (Cherry Jones). As Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) tells him, “This is it. You landed the plane Logan. 48 hours and out — congratulations.”

Brian Cox and Matthew Macfadyen in “Succession”

But even before such salutations prove premature, Logan isn’t pleased, and his first question to Tom hints at why: “Have you heard from the rats?” he wonders, admitting (as much as a stubborn old man like Logan can) that he misses his kids. Soon after, he’s fleeing his own party with his bodyguard and “best pal” Colin (Scott Nicholson). His night only goes downhill from there, as his birthday dinner at a random diner gets interrupted for impromptu negotiations for PGM — negotiations he technically loses… or does he? When taking the bigger picture into account, Logan may be the winner once again.

Echoes of “Succession’s” series premiere echo through “The Munsters.” Again, it’s Logan’s birthday. Again, his party isn’t the top priority. (It may literally be his last priority.) Again, Kendall is trying to close an acquisition to impress his papa, and once again, he gets the deal done only to be brutally undercut by the implication it isn’t nearly enough. Back then, Kendall was told Logan isn’t stepping down as CEO, despite promising his first-born son the top job. Today, Kendall’s only birthday communication with his father comes in the form of a one-sided phone call where Logan bellows at his rogue children, “Congratulations on saying the biggest number, you fucking morons.”

Is Logan a sore loser? Sure. He wanted Pierce, and he wanted it bad. Kendall wasn’t wrong in calling the New York Times-esque media company his father’s “decades-long obsession.” But Logan is also right in assessing his children’s tactics: During the last-minute negotiations, the Roy “sibs” have no concept of the money they’re spending — it’s telling that Roman, of all people, tries to emphasize the scale of a billion dollars — and they don’t know or don’t care that Nan’s playing them against themselves. All they see is revenge, and they pay upwards of three “bill” to stick it to their dad.

Beyond their dodgy business acumen, what they neglect to realize is how their decision to engage with Logan again will affect their psyches, which appear shockingly healthy at the onset of Episode 1. The first shot of Roman sees him doing actual work — he’s not sending dick pics to Gerri (J. Smith Cameron) or masturbating against his office window. He’s holding a meeting for the sibs’ start-up, The Hundred, “a revolutionary new media brand that’s going to redefine news for the 21st century.” Is it bullshit, as Shiv (Sarah Snook) later claims? Absolutely. Just about anything that features the words “boutique” in the pitch deck and aims to be “clickbait but for smart people” probably isn’t destined for greatness. But still, it seems Roman has been working these three months — spending personal capital, signing writers, and courting investors — instead of licking his wounds.

Succession Season 4 Connor Willa

The same goes for Kendall. Lest we forget, the last time we saw the second-coming of Weird Al, he was one day removed from floating face down in a pool. He then had an emotional breakdown at his mother’s wedding and could barely stand up. Just a few months ago, Kendall was broken, and he could’ve been shattered after rallying for yet another failed coup. Instead, he’s striding into the Pacific Palisades mansion howling “Romey!” and cracking jokes about torturing journalists. (Yes, that one stung.) Kendall seems good — really good — and it can’t be a coincidence that such contentment comes after three months of hard separation from his toxic father.

Can he, Shiv, and Roman keep the good times rolling now that they’ve gotten a taste of vengeance? Maybe, but the forced laughter after Logan’s verbal backhand foretells a far less jolly future. After all, the Waystar Royco CEO is about to be a very wealthy man with a lot of time on his hands. Once the GoJo sale goes through, and without PGM as his new plaything, what else will Logan have to do besides pester the wayward children he so clearly misses? Logan has always wanted a worthy adversary — it’s the only way his victories carry any meaning — and he’s also wanted at least one of his kids to rise to the challenge. Stealing PGM isn’t exactly proof positive they’re ready to tangle with pops, but they did poke the bear, and this bear loves to fight back.

“Succession” Season 4 would have to test the Roy trio’s newfound bond; they came together once to stand united against their father, but can they sustain their partnership after decades of being pitted against each other by a diabolical puppet master? Season after season, we’ve seen Kendall, Shiv, and Roman try to work with each other, protect each other, be there like siblings should, only to fall prey to a temptation at the core of their beings — and put there quite purposefully by their papa. Even after this week’s successful (if less-than-brilliant) triumph, fractures are already evident.

Better buckle up, fuckleheads. Our latest birthday is only the beginning.

Succession Season 4 Tom Greg

Nicholas Braun and Matthew Macfadyen in “Succession”

Courtesy of Macall B. Polay / HBO

Greg Sprinkles

Bridget Randomfuck, we barely knew ye. Greg’s (Nicholas Braun) date to Logan’s birthday proves to be exactly the kind of tension-breaking, insult-baiting break Episode 1 needs, allowing everyone from Tom to Kerry (Zoe Winters) a pot-shot (or six) at the unsuspecting woman “from the apps.” Hearing Tom’s run of censures — just about her handbag — feels as close to a warm welcome back as “Succession” can get (and the quip about carrying “flat shoes for the subway” brought down the house at the series’ New York premiere).

Still, I have to wonder just how far Tom’s razzing went: It’s easy to believe Logan has security cameras “out the wazoo” in his own home, but he’s not reviewing the tapes in Episode 1’s final shot. (He’s watching ATN.) So did Tom make Greg tell Logan about “rummaging to fruition” just to fuck with his favorite Sporus? Or was he really looking out for the foolish little man, knowing that the tape would eventually be flagged to the master of the house? I have to lean toward the former, but please share your opinions either way.

Shiv Show at the Fuck Factory

Moving from the Disgusting Brothers to Tom’s other romantic relationship, his marriage to Shiv appears to be dunzo. Not only have the two entered into a trial separation following last season’s betrayal(s), but now Shiv appears to be locked into a divorce via the Pierce acquisition. Nan — who, it must be said, sucks — mentioned how messy it would be for Shiv to be married to an ATN executive, and without missing a beat, she promised divorce proceedings. (A claim that raised Kendall’s eyebrow, if not Roman’s.)

At episode’s end, she wakes Tom to take more stuff of their apartment, remind Mondale what she smells like, and tell her aggrieved husband it was over, cutting off any attempt he makes to talk through their issues. Paired with her repeated need for independent protection back in L.A. — when she told her brothers, “I have to look out for myself because no one else will” (and in case Roman gets “his dick caught in an A.I. jerk machine,” which is, of course, quite a plausible concern) — Shiv is ready to fly solo, or at least she’s preparing for it. Not trusting her brothers, her father, or her husband will do that to a person, though it’s hard to believe Shiv will ever be able to separate from the Roys, even if she can separate from Tom.

Do You Have Any Jokes?

Logan’s request from a roast may not have gone over well (though I’m proud of Greg for giving it a real shot), but it’s the perfect excuse to honor Episode 1’s funniest crack. Perhaps I’m biased by how much I despise Nan — there’s something about her smug superiority complex that gets under my skin — but I’ve got to go with Roman’s two bald-faced jabs at her faux ignorance:

“I know, it’s so confusing,” he says when Nan pretends to be overwhelmed by bids of “eight or nine” billion. “What comes after nine? 9B?”

And lest we forget his opening insult, after Nan pretends to have a headache before “feeling better” and agreeing to see them: “All right, we get to talk to an old lady about newspapers. Amazing.”

Best Line That Could Still Air on ATN

Shout-out to Justine Lupe as Willa for nailing a delicate joke amid Connor’s torrid pitch for an extreme wedding. After asking his bride-to-be if she would be OK with “bum fights” on her big day —  you know, for the free publicity — Willa respectfully stammers, “I’ve always– I mean, it’s dumb, but I quite wanted a nice wedding.”

Dare to dream, Willa. Dare to dream.

“Succession” Season 4 releases new episodes Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.

It turns out even the saddest birthday

Wordle, the five-letter word guessing game that has taken the world by storm, challenges players each day to figure out the winning word. Since its release in 2021, Wordle has become immensely popular on social media and has even inspired variations of the game including Quordle, Octordle, and, for math lovers, Nerdle.

Wordle started on June 19, 2021, with a listed 2,315 possible solutions. When The New York Times purchased Wordle in 2022, six words were removed from this list: agora, pupal, lynch, fibre, slave, and wench. When players connect to the Wordle site, their browser downloads a script that stores all past answers and future, unused Wordle words.

The New York Times offers players a new five-letter word from the list of unused Wordle words above to guess each day, never repeating words, so there is a finite list of words left to be played. There are many strategies players use to guess the daily word whether it’s choosing the best Wordle starter words, eliminating vowels first, or knowing the statistics of letters. Players are given six chances to guess the word, being notified of correct letters and correct letter placement each turn.

Having trouble winning even though you are using an unused Wordle word to start every time? Check out this video from BuzzFeed Multiplayer, which shows some handy methods for never losing at Wordle!

As of right now, the script allows for over 1,700 more days of its famous five-letter puzzles, keeping Wordle a popular puzzle game for at least five more years. No matter what strategy players use, now they at least have a reference for which possible words Wordle may use next. With almost 9,000 possible five-letter words according to The Scrabble Dictionary, it is very possible that Wordle will add even more to its vocabulary over time.

    Summary:
Wordle is a web-based word-guessing game developed by Josh Wardle that took the world by storm in 2021. Players are given a five-letter word to guess and have six attempts to get the word correct. When they get a letter correct, it will mark itself as green if it’s in the correct position and yellow if it is the correct letter in the wrong position. A yellow letter also means that letter could appear more than once. Wordle was purchased by The New York Times Company in 2022 and added to their website and app, keeping the core game free to play as promised – with additional words and other bonuses available through subscription, and is available via browser, iOS, and Android.

Wordle, the five-letter word guessing game that

Opera lovers know how to deal with these situations in the theater. They go to hear the music – more specifically, they go to hear the voices – and they know how to block out or, at least, ignore elements of the production that don’t jibe with what they’re hearing. All those things that are important to the seasoned theatergoer, like acting and direction and a cogent plot, are just icing on an evening in the opera house.

Which brings us to the strange but wonderful hybrid that is “Sweeney Todd.” Despite being performed in opera houses around the world, it is not an opera. In addition to there being way too much spoken dialogue, it’s nearly impossible for any singer to project ditties like “A Little Priest” or “By the Sea” into a 2000-plus-seat opera house without amplification.

The bass-baritone Bryn Terfel sang a definitive Sweeney in a concert version of the musical with the New York Philharmonic in 2014, Emma Thompson being his Mrs. Lovett. A fully staged “Sweeney Todd” opened Sunday at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and beyond the aforementioned concert version, it is the best sung version of the Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler musical I’ve ever heard – and that includes both casts of the original 1979 production. Plus, we’re treated here to a full orchestra of 26 players, and that is much more than mere icing. You can’t help but hear the difference between how the score is meant to sound and how Broadway has been cheating us in recent years by performing Sondheim with under half that number of players in the pit. Bravo to the producers!

Playing Sweeney Todd, Josh Groban isn’t a true baritone. When he needs to boom out a few low notes, he growls instead. But his Sweeney is a beautifully sung one that humanizes the demon barber, which, in the end, makes for a more perverse serial killer. There are moments, especially during “A Little Priest,” that it appears Mrs. Lovett’s dream of wedding the erstwhile Benjamin Barker might actually come true.

Everyone from Angela Lansbury to Patti LuPone to Helena Bonham Carter (in the 2007 movie version) has brought a comic stridency to the role of Mrs. Lovett. I didn’t think it possible to sing the character’s music any other way. Annaleigh Ashford finds the way, and it is a revelation to hear some of these phrases of comic depravity delivered with such tonal beauty and accuracy. The result is that she and Groban present an unusually young couple on the road to their premature destruction.

And yet, as good as these two stars are vocally, the musical high point of Act 1 belongs to Jordan Fisher in the sailor role of Anthony when he sings a very passionate “Johanna.” In Act 2, the most memorable star turn comes from Gaten Matarazzo in the role of the simpleton Toby. He matches Fisher’s vocal intensity when he sings an especially wounded version of “Not While I’m Around.” As the Beggar Woman, Ruthie Ann Miles also impresses throughout, providing that tragic leitmotif that ties everything into a funeral bow. Only the strident coloratura soprano of the ingénue Johanna (Maria Bilbao) disappoints. Sadly, the Judge’s “Mea Culpa” has been cut in a production that already lasts almost three hours.

All this analysis of the singing might be a clue to what’s occasionally wrong with Thomas Kail’s direction when his actors aren’t thrilling us with their superb vocals. Kail brings out the humor in “Sweeney Todd” that both John Doyle (2005 Broadway revival) and Tim Burton (2007 film version) eschewed. Ashford sees to that almost singlehandedly. She doesn’t miss a chance to twist a phrase or an eyebrow in her burlesque seduction of Sweeney. Elsewhere, Kail’s approach is a little too operatic, too respectful. There’s even a stateliness verging on lethargy between some of the musical numbers. “Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir” and “The Contest” have always been problematic.

In the original production, there were three contests, which quickly got reduced to the one shaving battle we see today. For some reason, this production’s Pirelli (Nicholas Christopher) makes a very unspectacular entrance that is several beats late. At the very end of Act 2, Toby’s reappearance takes place in the dark and leaves Sweeney on stage with the corpse of Lucy for an eternity before getting his throat slit. In the original production, director Hal Prince shocked us with quick efficiency by having Toby, in a white fright wig, enter through a trap door to do his business in record time.

Mimi Lien’s grand set design literally keeps much of the drama at a distance. Instead of Sweeney’s murders taking place in our face, Kail and Lien have placed the barber shop on a bridge that is raised and lowered to indicate various other settings. Even at its lowest position, for the barber shop, it features a fence (a safety requirement?) that messes with our view of the actors. More significant, the bridge is placed way too far upstage. Granted, Groban is not giving us the most possessed or driven demon barber ever seen on stage, but it would help if his murders weren’t taking place across the street and up a steep flight of stairs. Natasha Katz’s lighting compensates by presenting a series of spooky tableaux. This is just a guess, but the best seats to see this “Sweeney Todd” might be in the front mezzanine of the Lunt-Fontanne.

Since this space has been used so often to complain about the hideous amplification of current plays (“A Doll’s House”) and musicals (“& Juliet”) on Broadway, a shout-out of congratulations needs to go to sound designer Nevin Steinberg. Even the original 1979 production of “Sweeney Todd” blurred the multiple singing voices in the songs “Kiss Me” and the reprise of “Johanna” in act two. It wasn’t until I heard the original cast recording that I discovered the intricate beauty of these ensemble pieces. Steinberg’s amplification maintains the individuality of the voices so that we can fully enjoy the unusual mosaic of Sondheim’s music in a live performance.

Opera lovers know how to deal with

The world is upside down as we return, at long last, to Succession Land tonight. The Roy kids are moving in harmony. Tom Wambsgans is being bullied by Greg The Egg. Roman Roy is suddenly the cautious voice of reason. And Logan Roy?

Tonight, Logan Roy loses.

Succession—and yes, hello, we’re back! Succession! Season four! It feels so good!—has always been careful to contrast Logan’s power, his savvy, his capacity for world-shaping rage, against his frailties. Way back when, before we’d gotten a single all-powerful “Fuck off!” out of Brian Cox’s mouth, the show’s first two minutes made it clear: The Great Man is fumbling, confused in the dark, barely in control of his own body. And we’ve returned to that idea again and again over the last five years: The king in decline. The flesh weak…and the spirit starting to seem a little less than willing.

And yet somehow, Logan’s never seemed smaller—or maybe just lesser—than he did tonight, sitting incognito in a crowded restaurant on his birthday, telling his body man Colin, with apparent and awful sincerity, that he’s his “best pal.” (It’s amazing to see Scott Nicholson, who’s been playing Colin with the practiced dead eyes of a predator for four seasons now, project real panic as Logan attempts to engage with him as a human being.) Logan’s not looking for real friendship, of course—wouldn’t know what to do with it if it was offered, slapping down Colin’s single attempt to follow orders and open up about his life to his boss with a quickness. But who else can he turn to? No kids*. No Marcia. In the aftermath of last season’s destructive finale, Logan has finally kicked every dog he doesn’t literally own hard enough to send them out of his orbit for good. And now there’s No Real Person left, in Waystar Royco terminology, and “The Munsters” are closing in.

*(Except Connor.)

Things are both literally, and figuratively, much sunnier over in Los Angeles, where—against all odds, and in defiance of their various raging attachment disorders—Kendall, Shiv, and Roman are making a genuine go at the alliance they forged with the Tuscan sand (and their dad’s boot) on their asses all the way back in December of 2021. (Which, in the show’s timeline, appears to have now been a couple of months ago.) It wouldn’t be a Roy family meeting without some light accusations of treason, betrayal, and double-dealing, but all factors considered, The Kids are working together shockingly well as they try to chart a Logan-less course into the future. Even if that path inevitably drags them right back into conflict with the old bear, once the roiling estrangement between Shiv and a still-Logan-loyal Tom lets slip that Pops is, once again, angling to buy his old rivals over at Pierce Global Media—hoping to take the news giant with him once the sale of Waystar to GoJo goes through in 48 hours. The kids might not be calling their dad on his birthday, but stymie-ing his decades-long obsession with buying Pierce? That’s the kind of intrafamily communication they can get behind.

Jeremy Strong

Jeremy Strong

Let’s take each kid in turn, then, starting with Kendall—who is, for once, arguably the least in-turmoil out of all his siblings. Not that he’s not still running manic, and making casual references to heroin use. But for the first time since Shiv’s wedding, we’re seeing a Kendall who is not, meaningfully, alone. We see him wobble a bit when he’s forced to talk to his now-ex Naomi, and he’s mostly transparent about seeing the kids’ own stab at a Pierce acquisition as an (insanely expensive) way to fuck over their dad. But after Tuscany, and finally revealing the details of Andrew Dodds’ death to people who then did not immediately use it as leverage against him, Jeremy Strong is no longer playing Kendall as a man with a poison burning him from the inside out. No idea how long it’ll hold—there’s no way the Kids Alliance stays solid through this whole season, and god, but how ugly it could get once it starts to crack. But for now, Kendall is in as good a shape as we’ve seen him in years.

Ditto Roman, albeit in a more subdued direction. Rome has always been the Roy kid stuck most firmly in Logan’s Persistent Disrespect Field—and now, it becomes even clearer, the one most consistently harmed by it. Tonight, for pretty much the first time, we’re seeing a Roman Roy who is not devoting 40 percent of his mental resources to worrying about what Daddy is thinking, and it’s a good look: Kieran Culkin drops much of the sweaty energy that’s characterized so much of his performance in past seasons, presenting a Roman who is calmer, more focused, and, god help us…mature. Not that he’s not still a snarky little piece of shit, barely stomaching the potential Pierce deal, and needling the kids’ new money guy (Kevin Changaris) at every turn. But after years of different people (with varying levels of self-interest/manipulation) asserting that Roman has the instincts to play in the big leagues, buried under those mountains of dad-inflicted insecurity and cum jokes, it’s heartening to see that guy finally starting to emerge.

The wild card, for once, is Shiv, who is still scared-rabbit skittish at the idea of placing her future fully in the hands of her two brothers. That’s understandable, in so far as, have you met those guys? But also as a reflection of her relationship with Tom, which has now fully splintered in the aftermath of his betrayal at the end of the last season. And so she’s doing the Shiv Thing—keeping options open (in this case, by fielding calls from the transition team from the Democratic candidate in the apparently incredibly nasty presidential election running in the background of tonight’s premiere), and impulsively speaking reality into existence, telling Nan Pierce that she and Tom are getting a divorce before anyone, including maybe herself, even knows it.

And Tom? Tom’s sad, y’all. Not the dead-eyed “Woe is me” sad from when he thought he was going to prison last season; this is something deeper and more human, paradoxically making the character as appealingly vulnerable as he’s ever been, despite it coming in the direct aftermath of maybe the worst thing he’s ever done. We get some flashes of the old Tom—spiraling for position as he tries to coax a promise out of Logan that their alliance will hold even if he’s no longer his son-in-law, working up some classic Greg-bashing after the latter faux pas himself and his new girlfriend to completion (possibly) in one of Logan’s guest beds. But there’s no glee left here at being in the inner circle at long last, or of getting a “Tommy” out of the old man. And the less said about his new status as the junior partner in “The Disgusting Brothers”—Greg’s nickname for the pair of them as, like, two swinging singles on the town—the better.

Brian Cox, Matthew Macfadyen

Except not, since that little nickname is Shiv’s opening salvo once the two finally end up in the same room together, after the dust has settled from the Pierce acquisition. (The kids win, although at $10 billion, the victory sounds pretty goddamn Pyrrhic.) The resulting conversation is about as raw as we’ve ever seen these two get, for all that Shiv declines to listen to Tom explain his conduct surrounding last season’s climactic drama. It’s a fantastic scene from both Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen; Shiv tries to keep it in that glib, comedy-writer dream-dialogue space that the Roy kids always try to channel their most wounded feelings into. But Tom’s hurt is just too damn big: “Do you really want to get into a full accounting of all the pain in our marriage, Shiv?” he asks, Macfadyen resisting the urge to go big or cruel.

As the two wander around the beige-brown hell of their shared apartment, it becomes clear that Shiv is there to formalize that divorce she conjured into existence just a few hours earlier. Snook, working as always from within the 8,000 layers of Shiv’s emotional armor, lets the cracks show, even as she tries to keep the conversation in the realm of what’s emotionally “profitable.” Her face is most heartbreaking in those frames when she knows Tom can’t see it, flinching repeatedly as he decides to finally take her numerous “no”s as an answer. The final shot of the scene is almost shockingly tender: two survivors of something big and tumultuous and mostly awful, holding hands as they contemplate the weight of what comes next.

But we don’t end there, of course. We end on Logan Roy, who—for all his wealth and power and anger and all that other bullshit—is somehow still reduced to being just another senior citizen, unable to sleep, staying up to watch shitty cable news. Despite giving one of the single biggest laugh moments of the whole premiere—i.e., the cut from Logan complaining about “this fucking lunk” on his network, to the image of the poor anchor in question, who doesn’t not look like “a scrotum in a toupee”—this whole closing sequence is also just brutally sad. “People watch at night,” Logan plaintively reminds ATN head Cyd, who he’s dragged out of a dead sleep to field his complaints. “I watch at night.” And when he asks her if she’s “fucking losing it,” it’s clear she’s not really who he’s asking it about.

“The Munsters” isn’t one of those big, seismic episodes of Succession that come along every once in a while; we’re setting tables here, not smashing them to pieces. Despite the Pierce maneuverings—and a great return performance from Cherry Jones as family matriarch Nan, aw-shucksing her way into an extremely lucrative bidding war that makes the Pierces the real “winners” of the episode—it functions mostly as a character study into what kind of awful people our awful people are at present. The status quo it sets is ominous, despite the bright settings: the kids, unable to resist the urge to define themselves in opposition to their dad; Shiv and Tom smashed; Logan, desperately searching for any meaning whatsoever to his grand sprawl of a life. Kendall, in his new state of semi-clarity, maybe says it best: “I need something super-fucking absorbing in my life,” he tells his brother and sister…just before blatantly taking a move that could recommit himself to the seasons-long blood-feud that’s totally defined his life to date. What do the Roys even look like when they’re not spending their considerable energy and resources on destroying each other? It’s not clear if we’ll ever really find out.

Stray observations

  • Welcome to our season 4 coverage of Succession here at The A.V. Club! This might be the most nervous I’ve ever been to take on a show for review; Succession is so dense, and so well-executed, that I know I’ll drop a few balls here or there. (It doesn’t help that I’m operating in the shadow of some great writers who’ve worked this beat before.) But I’m also incredibly excited to dig into the series’ final season with all of you, as the show lays the breadcrumbs for its obvious endgame: Greg Hirsch as the last man standing, king of the known universe.
  • Speaking of Greg: He continues to be the master of failing upward, earning some pervy kudos from Logan for getting to third base with his new girlfriend. For half a second, it feels like he might’ve crossed a line when he meets Logan’s pathetic, insistent demands that one of his cronies “roast him” by aiming for something real, with “Where’s your kids, Uncle Logan?” But Logan’s just happy to have something he can hit, instantly firing back a jab at Greg’s never-seen dad, and looking as happy as he does all night.
  • Great news, Conheads: Connor’s still holding tight-ish at one percent of the vote in the upcoming election, where he’s apparently running as an independent. (Also, his and Willa’s President and First Lady cosplays are both on point.) But he’s worried about being “squeezed,” which leads him to ask her if they can include some “bum fights” at their upcoming wedding, to pick up some viral heat. It’s always fascinating to watch her realize that there’s some new part of herself—in this case, her wedding dreams—that he’s ultimately willing to sell.
  • I’m not sure if the whole bit with Greg’s weird date—she asks Logan for a selfie, which, amazingly, is not the point where she gets kicked out of the birthday party—is set-up for future corporate shenanigans, or just Succession cringe comedy; either way, it’s one of the less successful runners of the episode.
  • Actually, can I put on my conspiracy hat for a second here? The ways the kids get wind of Logan’s attempted Pierce acquisition are incredibly sketchy—first, with Tom blurting out his non-date with Naomi to Shiv, and then with Greg’s date tagging one of the Pierces at Logan’s party. I wouldn’t be surprised if we later find out Nan was pulling the strings even harder to induce the bidding war.
  • New season, new intro: The biggest change from season three is the inclusion of Waystar’s hated, literally pissed-on StarGo streaming app.
  • No mention of the pregnancy plotting that was happening in last year’s finale, although Kerry (Zoe Winters) is still right at Logan’s side as his “friend-assistant-advisor” and catching the usual array of nasty jokes from the kids. That being said, she does get a couple of the best lines of the evening, all directed at Greg: “We’re not a fucking Shake Shack, Greg. This isn’t a pre-fuck party. It’s a birthday party.”
  • Where’s Marcia? “Marcia’s in Milan, shopping. Forever.”
  • As always, every actual business idea the Roy kids come up with is the worst business idea you’ve ever heard: Their quickly abandoned The Hundred is “Substack meets Masterclass meets The Economist meets The New Yorker”; later, one of their slides suggests it might also be a dating site. Kendall says it’ll deliver “high-value info snacks.” These fucking kids.
  • Roman, after Kendall talks about “smoking horse”: “He’s scared of needles. He’s not a real junkie.”
  • Jess Watch: Jess is in this one! Always nice to see Jess.
  • I only had to turn the episode off once due to overwhelming cringe, when Logan was asking poor Colin about whether he thinks there’s an afterlife. Colin is, as far as we know, a tremendously awful person, but nobody deserves having to face down that.
  • Nice use of the time difference between New York and the Pierce estate to keep cutting between gentle sunlight and Logan’s increasingly cramped and awful night-time bunker. We don’t get much of Gerri, Frank, and Karl tonight (although we do get a quick check-in with ol’ piss-bucket Ray) but even they seem fazed by the godawful atmosphere Logan’s throwing out without his kids around.
  • Seriously, though: Greg’s going to kill them all.

The world is upside down as we

Some of the computer code that powers Twitter has been leaked online, according to a legal filing, in the latest challenge encountered by the social network since it was bought by Elon Musk.

A user named in court documents as “FreeSpeechEnthusiast” allegedly shared parts of Twitter’s source code on GitHub, an online platform used by software developers. Twitter filed a subpoena on Friday requesting GitHub identify the leaker who posted the code, in an alleged breach of copyright, and anyone who downloaded the code.

A GitHub spokesman confirmed in an emailed statement that the company complied with a request from Twitter to take down the leaked code but would not comment further. Twitter did not respond to a request for comment Sunday night.

It is unclear when the code was posted online or whether its leak exposes Twitter to security vulnerabilities or hackers. Twitter’s takedown request to GitHub described it as “proprietary source code for Twitter’s platform and internal tools,” while the legal filing called it “various excerpts of Twitter source code.”

Musk said this month that Twitter would “open source” all of the software code it uses to recommend tweets on March 31.

“People will discover many silly things, but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found!” Musk wrote on March 18. “Providing code transparency will be incredibly embarrassing at first, but it should lead to rapid improvement in recommendation quality. Most importantly, we hope to earn your trust.”

Twitter has been in a state of turbulence since Musk took over the company and cut thousands of jobs. The New York Times on Sunday was first to report on the legal filing with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Sections of Twitter’s underlying code which it runs on was leaked online and its soft code shared on GitHub, an internet hosting service that helps developers store and manage their code, according to a legal filing reported by The New York Times.

On Friday, Twitter sent a copyright infringement notice to GitHub, which took it down the same day. Although it isn’t clear exactly how long the leaked code had been online, all signs point to it being at least several months.

The filing also reveals that Twitter had contacted the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, asking it to investigate who specifically shared the code and any others who downloaded it. Twitter has since launched an internal investigation into uncovering the source of the leak, and has learned that the culprit responsible left the company last year, the NY Times reports. That casts a very wide net, as approximately 75% of Twitter’s 7,500 employees have resigned or were laid off in that time since Elon Musk’s purchase of the company for $44 billion in October 2022.

According to the NY Times, a big concern for Twitter is that with security vulnerabilities now exposed, it could have given hackers an easy way into mining user data or even shutting down the site altogether.

This news comes as Musk continues to face fiscal and structural challenges with his social networking platform. According to a senior reporter at The Verge, Musk told employees on March 25 that the company is now valued at $20 billion valuation, which is less than half of the $44 billion he paid for it in October 2022.

And Musk had Twitter user up in arms Friday after he announced that the platform will be pulling the plug on legacy verified accounts’ blue check marks, which has historically indicated whether the account represents a notable person or brand, but now will belong to paid subscribers only.

“On April 1st, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks. To keep your blue checkmark on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue here,” Twitter’s account Twitter Verified tweeted Thursday.

“So after EVERYTHING WE HAD TO DO TO BE ACTUALLY VERIFIED ALL THE SUBMISSIONS ALL THE REJECTIONS ALL THE PRESS…YALL JUST READY FOR TWITTER TO NOT MEAN ANYTHING,” one user wrote responded, while others thought it might just be an April fool’s joke.

Singer breaks her “no guests” rule to give Evermore song its live debut

Another concert, another surprise on Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour as the singer welcomed Marcus Mumford onstage for the first-ever live performance of “Cowboy Like Me.”

A night after telling the Allegiant Stadium audience that “We don’t have guests at this show,” Swift’s second show at the same venue broke that rule. “Las Vegas, Nevada, you are so lucky, because we do have a special guest with us tonight,” Swift said before introducing Mumford. “Would you sing ‘Cowboy Like Me’ with me?”

The duo then delivered Swift’s debut performance of the Evermore track; the album version, which was recorded at Mumford’s Scarlet Pimpernel Studios, also featured him on background vocals. While this marked the first time Swift has played “Cowboy Like Me” live, the song had been a staple of Mumford’s own solo shows, being played nearly 50 times throughout 2022.

Saturday’s “Surprise Songs” portion also featured The Eras tour debut of Fearless’ “White Horse,” and the first time Swift has played that track since 2018:

The previous night, Swift dedicated the Surprise Songs mini-set to Lana Del Rey, performing their Midnights collaboration “Snow on the Beach,” as well as played “Our Song” in honor of opening act Beabadoobee.

Japanese animation film “Suzume” made just shy of $50 million on its opening weekend in mainland Chinese theaters.

Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, shows “Suzume” grabbing the top spot at the box office with $49.6 million (RMB342 million) between Friday and Sunday.

That is the biggest opening score by any film this year outside of the Chinese New Year holiday week in late January. The next best is “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which opened with $19.4 million in mid-February.

Directed by Shinkai Makoto, “Suzume” was a hit in Japan where it was released late last year and has remained on screens for a $105 million total. It played in February at the Berlin Film Festival, where it came away largely empty-handed, but has subsequently performed strongly in the Asian territories where it has released. (In South Korea, where it is now the second highest grossing film released in 2023, its third weekend is its strongest to date.)

“Suzume” powered the weekend to a $75.7 million box office total. Artisan Gateway calculates that the year to date total in China now stands at $2.26 billion, or some 12.5% ahead of the same point last year.

“Suzume” easily swept aside “Post-Truth” the local social-comedy drama film that had claimed the top spot in the box office charts for the previous two weeks. “Post-Truth” nevertheless delivered another $12.5 million over the weekend, for a running total of $72.8 million after 17 days on release.

Chinese-made new releases “The Best Is Yet to Come” and mystery drama “Manifesto” entered the chart in third and fourth spots, earning $5.6 million and $2.4 million, respectively.

“The Best Is Yet to Come” is a 2020 drama film directed by Wang Jing and said to be based on real events. Set in pre-Internet 2003, it follows a high school dropout who aspires to be an investigative journalist and change the world. Executive produced by indie icon Jia Zhangke, the film had its international premiere at the Venice and Toronto festivals in September 2020.

Chinese-made crime drama “Revival” took fifth place with a third weekend score of $2.2 million. After 17 days on release, it has garnered $27.7 million.

Sony’s “A Man Called Otto” also released in Chinese theaters over the latest weekend. But its performance was so negligible that Artisan Gateway did not report its figures. Local Chinese data providers point to it opening outside the Chinese top ten.

Two Hollywood titles that released earlier this month, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and “M3gan” also exited the top five. Chinese sources show them with cumulative totals of $5.90 million and $2.84 million respectively.

Although The CW’s Supergirl already ended its run on the network, a returning Arrowverse hero from the show is set to take the spotlight in The Flash Season 9.

The Flash‘s final season is poised to end the Arrowverse, but it would not be complete without a crossover from other shows. Javicia Leslie’s Batwoman already made an appearance during the fifth installment, helping Grant Gustin’s Scarlet Speedster defeat the Red Death.

Before the highly-anticipated return of Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow in the latter half of the season, another notable hero who is working alongside Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl will visit Central City to help the titular speedster.

Supergirl’s Dreamer Arrives in The Flash Season 9

The CW officially released a promo for The Flash Season 9 Episode 7 titled “Only in our Dreams,” giving fans a first look at the return of Nicole Maines’ Nia Nal aka Dreamer in the Arrowverse.

The 20-second promo provided a glimpse at what to expect with Dreamer’s appearance, showcasing the Supergirl character working with Candice Patton’s Iris West-Allen to escape the dream world.

Alongside the promo, a new still featuring Nia Nal meeting Iris West-Allen was revealed by the network.

The CW

The synopsis of the upcoming Arrowverse crossover installment teases a “fever dream” that Iris and Nia get sucked into explores “different possibilities for their lives:”

“ONLY IN OUR DREAMS – NICOLE MAINES GUEST STARS – Iris (Candice Patton) is visited by Nia Nal (guest star Nicole Maines), as she needs Iris’ help. When Iris and Nia fall into a fever dream and explore different possibilities for their lives, Barry (Grant Gustin), Chester (Brandon McKnight), Allegra (Kayla Compton) and Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) desperately try to help them. Meanwhile, Mark (Jon Cor) entertains Khione (Danielle Panabaker) but they have different ideas of what is fun, leaving Khione to feel that Mark is trying to make her something she is not. Jesse Warn directed the episode written by Kristen Kim & Jeff Hersh Carson.”

The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace previously talked about the upcoming Supergirl crossover, describing the episode as a “very special” one in the final season:

“Nicole is a fantastically talented actress and I’m so happy she’s agreed to be part of a very special Season 9 episode where I get to cross off one of my ‘Arrowverse Bucket List’ team-ups: Having two fantastic reporters — Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton) and Nia Nal — investigate their own very bizarre and frightening mystery.”

Watch the promo below:

Will Dreamer Team Up With the Flash?

Nicole Maines’ Nia Nal and Candice Patton’s Iris West-Allen are both reporters in the Arrowverse so it made sense that the upcoming The Flash episode will look to utilize their similar attributes.

The latest teaser suggested that a good chunk of the episode will mainly focus on the dynamic between Iris and Dreamer, potentially hinting that a team-up with the Flash could not be in the cards.

Given that Nia and Iris are stuck in a fever dream, there is also a good chance that Maines will not suit up as Dreamer at all in the upcoming crossover.

Still, it’s possible that an action-packed sequence involving Dreamer and the Scarlet Speedster could happen at the beginning of the installment or during its final moments.

Whatever the case, seeing Dreamer’s return in The Flash is already a win for Arrowverse.

The Flash Season 9 Episode 7, “Only in our Dreams,” is set to premiere on The CW on Wednesday, March 29.

Dead Cells may finally receive a native PS5 version as part of Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania, a listing for which has appeared online.

As noticed by Gematsu, the game has been rated by the ESRB, suggesting that a release for the game could be imminent.

It’s unclear if it will be a physical or digital release, but it appears to suggest that it will include the recently released Castlevania-themed DLC.

While playable on PS5 thanks to backward compatibility with the PS4 version of the game, this release would mark the first time it’s been playable natively on PS5. It’s unclear if the version will include the other non-Castlevania DLC as part of the package.

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC – Animated Trailer

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania is a co-production with Konami, owners of the classic IP.

When interviewed by IGN in relation to the new crossover, Konami assistant producer Tsutomu Taniguchi said that buzz around the Castlevania franchise was “really motivating for Konami.”

“We tried to bring back the games that people loved and cherished with the Castlevania Anniversary Collection and the Castlevania Advance Collection,” Taniguchi said.

“We also brought back Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night for our PlayStation fans and on mobile, and launched Grimoire of Souls on Apple Arcade to celebrate the lore of the franchise.

“But we know that our fans always want more, and we do too, so this opportunity to have this amazing crossover with Dead Cells was impossible to pass up on. ”
